Adeje Council’s business bonus Continued from Front Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín is heading the ImPyme Adeje project, which will work to increase online awareness for local firms. As part of the AdejeImpulsa branch, the scheme is directed, specifically, at the borough’s small and medium businesses. Letters, in Spanish and English, are being sent to local companies, detailing the scheme’s advantages. Cllr Méndez said: “Helping the local commercial sector, and offering these firms the essential tools to enter, or improve their presence in the digital world, as well as assisting those who need it to manipulate new technologies
to their advantage, are just some of our objectives. “Overall, our aim is for these companies to be a vanguard in the Canarian, Spanish and European commercial sectors.” ImPyme Adeje is already underway in Zone 1 (the town centre, La Postura, Los Olivos, El Galeón and Las Torres), and it will begin to operate in the tourist zones of Costa Adeje and Zones 2, 3 and 4, as shown. Crea Solutions company, contracted by the Council to work on the project, has a team of six people (taken from the job-seekers’ list) visiting local businesses, asking them to fill in questionnaires, and helping them with the geolocation of their firms.
This is, in effect, a free service for local businesses and will be carried out over the next five months. It will help you place your company on Google Maps, and create your own page in Google My Business. The team will also work to solve any issues you may have online, to help strengthen your digital presence. With the help of the team you can, for free, geo-locate your company, and they can also help you create a virtual presence online. You will be invited to participate in the ImPyme Adeje project, fill in a questionnaire and include your business data in what will be a growing, local-business network. Cllr Méndez stressed: “Col-
lecting this data is essential if we are to create a detailed and relevant business map, which will indicate the volume of enterprises we have in Adeje. “This, in turn, allows the Council to offer a more personalised service to businesses, meeting their needs exactly, with staff training, help and commercial assessments.” Zone 2 Tijoco Alto, La Concepción, Taucho, La Quinta, Las Moraditas, Tijoco Bajo, La Hoya, Las Cancelas, Armeñime, Los Menores, Las Rosas, Fañabé, Miraverde, El Madroñal, Playas de Fañabé Alto, Sector 4, Ifonche and intersecting areas. Zone 3
From the beginning of Barranco de Troya to Barranco de Erques, limited by the lower part of the TF1, including Mar Azul, Callao Salvaje, Playa Paraíso, El Puertito, parts of La Caleta, parts of the Barranco del Inglés, La Enramada, La Herradura, Urb. El Beril, Mirador del Duque, Jardines del Duque, Playas del Duque, Fañabé Bajo, Torviscas Bajo, San Eugenio Bajo, Playa de Las Américas, Sector 0 in intersecting areas. Zone 4 From the upper part of the TF1 with the Barranco de Troya to the edge of Miraverde, including Sector 1, San Eugenio Alto, Torviscas Alto, Roque del Conde and intersecting areas.
Terror and death as tower block is hit by fierce blaze
THERE were fears that more than 100 people died in Kensington’s horrific Grenfell Tower blaze after London’s fire chief announced that they were not expecting to find any more survivors. Commissioner Dany Cotton said there were still “unknown numbers of people” inside the building. She told reporters: “Tragically, we are not expecting to find anyone else alive. The severity and the heat of the fire would mean it would be an absolute miracle for anyone to be left alive.” Ms Cotton added that full searches of the upper floors, where no one was said to have survived, were yet to be carried out. And parts of it would need to be shored up before rescue workers could enter. Seventeen people were confirmed dead as we went to Press yesterday, amid
desperate appeals from families for their loved ones, who had been missing for more than a day. As many as 80 people have been treated at six London hospitals, including 17 who remain in critical care. Residents were trapped in their flats when the fire broke out at the tower in Latimer Road, North Kensington, shortly before 1am on Wednesday. Witnesses described terrifying scenes as people jumped from their flats in a frantic
bid to escape the fire and fumes, while parents threw their children out of windows in a bid to save them. There were reports that a baby thrown from the sixth floor was caught by a woman, who began running towards the tot when she saw the falling bundle. And some people used ropes made from knotted bedsheets to escape the flames and smoke, only for them to fall far too short. London Labour MP David Lammy described the fire as “corporate manslaughter”, and called for arrests to be made. He said of a missing friend of his: “We hope and pray that she is in hospital and has not perished in that building, as I suspect hundreds will have done by the end of this count.” Prime Minister Theresa May, who visited the site yesterday, ordered a full
public inquiry into the blaze after it was claimed that ministers had been warned over the cladding, believed to have helped the fire spread. Pictures of the tower yesterday showed burnedout flats, which are now blackened shells, with little left intact. And the remains of a family’s kitchen table and chairs were visible through the window, not burned-out wall of one flat. Bosses of the company running the building, and those who carried out recent refurbishment work, were challenged to explain whether new cladding led to it going up “like a firelighter” in around 15 minutes. The death toll is expected to soar, as rescuers piece their way through the ruined flats, in which more than 400 people were living when the fire ripped through. Two young girls, part of
a family of five who lived on the tower’s 20th floor, were found by relatives in a London hospital. Their mother, father and sixmonth-old baby sister are still missing. Three generations of one family are missing after three girls, a mother, father and grandmother were caught up in the blaze. More than £1million has been raised to help those affected by the inferno, while volunteers and charities have helped feed and shelter people who could not return to their homes. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince Harry, who live in the London borough, donated to the fund set up to help those affected, and The Queen offered her condolences to victims’ families. The cause of the fire is not known at this stage, says the London Fire Brigade.

Mayor gives nod to sustainable tourism
Elderly man resuscitated
A PENSIONER, aged 86, was resuscitated after suffering a heart attack while dining in a Las Americas restaurant on Avenida Rafael Puig.
Emergency services were contacted, and, while waiting for paramedics, customers began performing basic CPR on the victim, guided by an emergency-services doctor over the phone. Once paramedics arrived, they performed advanced CPR successfully on the man, stabilising him before taking him to Hospiten Sur, where he remains in a critical condition.
ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga has signed an official “letter of commitment” to sustainable tourism during a meeting with Tomás de Azcárate y Bang, President of the Institute for Responsible Tourism (ITR).
The document underlines a firm commitment to advance a new model of tourism, which can be sustained. It will be based on cultural diversity and social responsibility, sharing a common future. “This initiative fits perfectly with the philosophy we have already embraced in Adeje,” said Rodríguez Fraga. “Tourism is also
a great opportunity for our world today, and it should be linked to the environment, as well as the society, promoting respect for cultures and ways of life.” By signing up to the programme, Adeje will contribute to, and benefit from, an exchange of good tourism practices, geared towards the formation of a responsible industry.
They will be part of a series of programmes for specialised tourism training and education, using cultural diversity as an essential tourism resource. The ITR was formed following a 1995 international conference on global, sustainable tourism in Lanzarote. The body was granted permanent status with the backing of UNESCO two years later.
Medano’s possible Fatal motorbike crash outbreak of E.coli
A MAN aged 28, and his 30-year-old female companion, died last Sunday evening after their motorbike crashed in the access tunnel to Teno Lighthouse, in Buenavista del Norte. Paramedics raced to the scene, along with a doctor and a nurse from the local health centre, only to confirm that both victims had been killed instantly.
UK airports
floored
GATWICK Airport has been rated the second-worst in the world behind Kuwait, with Manchester one place below and Edinburgh at No.5. But in a new survey, leading Spanish airports Barcelona and Madrid are sitting comfortably in the top 10, taking seventh and eighth spots respectively. AirHelp, a legal company involved in flight compensation, has ranked 76 airports by punctuality, quality and service, encompassing social media’s 130,000-plus tweets as well, over a three-month period this year.
Brit’s TF-1 GRANADILLA Town Hall closed El Medano’s beach earlier this week as a precaution, following the discovery of E.coli contamination on the stretch between Playa Chica and Los Balos. Council spokesman Jacobo Pérez said a further analysis had been com-
missioned, and the beach is likely to reopen by the weekend. The results came during a routine water-quality check, and the local Council decided to close the beach to ensure adequate levels of safety. But it stressed that the health risk was minimal.
collision AN 18-year-old Brit, seriously injured after being hit by a vehicle on the TF-1 at around 3.30am on Wednesday in the Adeje area, is in a critical condition. Paramedics, who said the teenager had suffered a severe head injury, transferred him to Candelaria Hospital for further medical care.

Adeje sprinkled with stunning salt carpets
Residents hard at work on last year’s Adeje carpets
THE most famous, traditional Corpus Christi carpets on the island can be found in La Orotava, where the outstanding mixture of flower, salt and sand patterns adorn the main plaza every year. But you can see other fine examples of street carpets, especially in Adeje town, where the annual, coloured salt carpets involve many local groups, working on their individual sections to add to the final presentation. Along the main street,
the Calle Grande, a long carpet is created by individual groups, all working from a single, unified design, which, when complete, will form the town’s main Corpus Christi carpet. This year, for the first time, Adeje Focus group (a recently-formed association for international residents) will also be taking part. Work will begin at about 5pm tomorrow (Saturday), and participants in each group are working with col-
oured salt, prepared by Adeje Council’s
Cops pinch man who forges 50-euro notes THE so-called, safer 50-euro note has been exposed and duplicated, by a top fraudster who lives in Spain with his parents.
The first sighting of this copycat version, produced by the country’s leading money counterfeiter, led to the discovery of the notes, which added up to more than one million euros. Yet Europol, the EU’s law-enforcement agency, informs us on its website: “They are produced with sophisticated printing technology. They also have a number of prominent security features. “These make them easy to distinguish from counterfeit notes without the use of special equipment, thus deterring counterfeiters.” Oh no they don’t! National Police officers
raided a Zaragoza address and found a large operation, controlled by a person who had been forging new and old 20 and 50-euro notes, as well as fivedollar US bills. Officers found 140,000 euros, comprised mostly of fake 50-euro notes. They then arrested the forger’s five associates, who, between them, were in the process of producing more fake notes to the tune of 675,000 euros.
The cops removed printers, guillotines, holograms, ink and paper … enough material to produce fake notes worth up to 1.275m euros. The counterfeiter used his five associates to distribute the notes, and, when they were arrested, officers also discovered they had drugs for sale. Further information suggested they had been involved in at least nine robberies.
Culture Department members.
They have also drawn up the overall design, and the groups can choose their own colours to work with on a white backdrop. On the Calle Corpus, parallel to the main street, two individual carpets are also being created. For a taste of local culture, and how the borough’s groups integrate, visit the town centre tomorrow afternoon (Saturday) and watch the carpets being made? Visitors are more than
welcome, and there’s a lovely sense of community during the hours-long fabrication of the salt designs, which will be walked upon the following day after the 11am mass in Santa Ursula church. It’s another example of how Adeje works to combine tradition with tourism, making sure that the celebration of what is the essence of the borough is also open to visitors and new residents, as spectators or participants.

Bomb squad’s Teide blast
THE Guardia Civil bomb squad have carried out a controlled explosion of a mortar grenade (above), found by a hiker in Las Cañadas del Teide, a popular area for walkers within Teide National Park. The hiker alerted emergency services at 7pm, and, immediately, the bomb squad were dispatched to the scene. They identified the explosive as an old 81mm mortar grenade and destroyed it safely.
Another shocking death of a cyclist
ANOTHER cyclist has been killed by a drunken driver on the notorious N-332 in the Valencia province of Oliva. It happened last Sunday, just five weeks after three triathletes from Jávea, Alicante, lost their lives and two more were injured when they were mown down on the same highway. This time, a 25-year-old BMW-driving Dutchman, who lives nearby, struck the victim and his companion, but drove away. However, he was soon caught by the Guardia Civil and tested positive for alcohol and drugs at the police station in Gandia. The two cyclists were out on an early-morning ride when the driver ploughed into them at around 8.10am. One escaped unhurt, but the other, aged 30, was seriously injured and died minutes after the crash. He is believed to be the son of a retired Local Police officer from Senija, near Benissa in Alicante.

A legal place to enjoy cannabis SOME 50,000 people are said to consume cannabis on a regular basis, in the Canary Islands’ 138 legal clubs, of which there are 54 in Tenerife. The data is supplied by Thailo Rodríguez, who created the first clubs in Tenerife and Gran Canaria in 2010. He now offers advice to anyone interested in opening one. Its consumption is, actually, still illegal. But there is a legal loophole which those who consume it can quote, especially people who use it for therapeutic purposes. That is why the Canarian Parliament approved a motion on 16th May, urging the regional government, in turn, to demand that Congress “advances” in legalising cannabis use, taking into account that it poses health risks. The approved proposal explains that this plant contains molecules with anti-depressant, antiinflammatory and antianxiety properties, while other properties can help
protect the nervous system. Those MPs in favour of the proposal agree: “The scientific community is beginning to discover the full potential of cannabinoids and their possible applications, particularly for some types of cancer, as well as in degenerative diseases.” There is no legal problem if
the substance is ingested in a cannabis club, which is allowed to grow up to six kilos per month for members’ consumption. But if members remove the cannabis from the club to use it elsewhere, and they are detected by police, it will be seized and they will be fined. Rodríguez makes
it clear that the clubs selfregulate, stressing that by taking the substance away from the premises, they are “violating the manual of good practice”. He points out that for people who use it for therapeutic purposes, the most effective way would be at home.
Anti-Corruption chief is driven out by critics MANUEL Moix, Spain’s Anti-Corruption Prosecutor, has resigned amid criticism that he owned shares in an offshore company.
Moix, appointed to the role in February, stepped down the day after confirming that he had a 25% stake in a Panama company. He said he had inherited it from his father, and shared it with his siblings. His resignation could be viewed as a victory for opposition parties, which have, repeatedly, criticised the way he handled some cases involving the ruling People’s Party (PP). Spanish newspapers published stories in April, claiming that Moix had tried to hinder a probe into the conduct of people from PP’s Madrid branch. The reports sparked increasing calls within
the opposition for Moix’s resignation, although he denied any wrong-doing. His stand-down, however, was not welcome among Spain’s senior officials, and Public Prosecutor Jose Manuel Maza defended Moix’s track record. “I’m satisfied there is absolutely nothing in the way he behaved that has been irregular or illegal,” said Maza, who announced the resignation. He added that his office never found that Moix had acted illegally or
inappropriately. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who leads the People’s Party, also felt increasing pressure about the Moix appointment, especially at a time when he is faced with strong opposition in his minority government. But Rajoy has attempted to distance himself from corruption scandals, which have surrounded his party and affected the PP’s support hugely among the public. The Government has
defended Moix against allegations of influencepeddling, while dealing with corruption cases. But revelations of his family holding an offshore share in the Duchesse Financial Overseas company, in Panama, was seen as the last straw. The firm was created in Panama on 4th January, 1988, according to technical group Infolibre. Six weeks later, the company acquired a luxury property north of Madrid, which had previously been owned by Moix’s parents. During the ownership transfer, Duchesse was represented by Margarita Moix, the couple’s eldest daughter, and a lawyer by trade. The home has six bedrooms, five bathrooms, a swimming pool and a 4,600sq/m plot of land. But the Panamabased company has never undertaken any known activity, beyond ownership of the building.

The formula for happy families...
Four injured after motorway pile-up ALDEAS Infantiles SOS España children’s organisation and Adeje Council are collaborating in a fascinating campaign.
It has already seen the borough’s younger residents talk and share their beliefs on what is important in their lives, their borough and how they and their families can be happy and live well. “What we are hoping for from this initiative is a partnership to build a future, fuelled by hope for the children of Adeje, because they are the future”, says Social Harmony Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares. “In recent months, the youngsters here have been bringing us their ideas and suggestions, through
school meetings, and we are hoping to organise a larger event for, and about, children in Adeje.” The first phase of the project saw the team visiting the borough’s schools to listen to the children. Now they will have feedback from some adults also involved in the project, to see how best to proceed and realise many of their ideas. To develop this phase, there will be a series of meetings. And also on the cards is the creation of a club in the next school year, enabling students to meet and exchange ideas for Adeje. The object is to encourage them to talk and listen to each other, and draw out their suggestions. Organisers say it is important to seek out the children’s talents and reinforce them. Ideas
FOUR people were injured last Friday morning during a pile-up on the TF-1 near Arafo, in the Santa Cruz province. Three vehicles were involved and one overturned. A 29-year-old woman, driving a Ford Fiesta, hit the central barrier, then shot across both lanes and ended up overturned on the other side of the dual carriageway. The woman, and her 57-year-old passenger, suffered moderate whiplash injuries and were freed

They would have to make time to form new friendships, teach each other new languages, learn to resolve problems through dialogue and help others who are having a bad time.
EU nursing queries at rock-bottom now
Drunkard’s rude awakening A DRUNKEN man, with an extensive criminal record, broke into a property and decided to take a nap halfway through the robbery. But the 56-year-old was later found by the owner of the Gran Canaria home in Telde, sound asleep on the floor, his bag of swag beside him.
Once National Police officers arrived, they had

from the car by firefighters. When the Fiesta crossed both lanes, it hit a Nissan Vanette, which ended up straddling both lanes. The 37-year-old driver also suffered whiplash, while the third car, a Honda Accord, smashed into the Vanette, its driver, aged 35, suffering minor injuries. Two ambulances took the injured parties to hospital for further medical treatment as the Guardia Civil monitored the traffic.
to get him out of his stupor before arresting him.
NURSES from the European Union have turned their backs on UK job applications dramatically since last year’s Brexit referendum. The numbers applying for work have dropped by a ridiculous 96%, with just 46 nurses interested in working there this April. In comparison, a total of 1,304 from the EU joined the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) register last July. The results of the study leave the National Health Service some 40,000 nurses short of its requirement. And the NMC said new Englishlanguage tests for EU nurses would probably have accounted for some of the disinterest.
But the Health Foundation said the findings, during a period of chronic shortages in the National Health Service, was bleak, adding that they should be viewed as a “wake-up call”. The NHS is already struggling with nursing vacancies, and shortages are likely to become even worse. A survey in May by the Royal College of Nursing found that one in nine posts in England was vacant. Anita Charlesworth, the Health Foundation’s Director of Research and Economics, said: “Without EU nurses, it will be even harder for the NHS and other employers to find the staff they need to provide safe patient-care.”

Plastic menace for Spain’s fish-eaters A MARINE biologist and researcher at Spain’s Cádiz University believes we are now living through a Plastic Age, following the Bronze and Iron Ages. Andrés Cózar is in a ideal position to judge because has spent the last few years exploring the seven seas for the Superior Scientific Research Council. Together with his team, Cózar has proved that there are five major accumulations of plastic waste in the open ocean, coinciding with the five major ocean gyres (rotating ocean currents, particularly involved with large wind movements). Yet he is still optimistic because he feels that steps are being taken in the right direction. Besides the wellknown accumulation of plastic residues in the North Pacific Gyre,
researchers have found similar waste in the centre of the North Atlantic, South Pacific, South Atlantic and the Indian Ocean. And Cózar’s latest research also shows “a sixth, large, accumulation of plastics” in the Mediterranean Sea. “When we compared the measurements in the Mediterranean with the ones we took in each of the gyres,
including the muchdiscussed North Pacific Gyre, we saw that the average concentrations were similar to those in the Mediterranean,” he said. What’s more, Cózar says the samples taken from the surface water could be “just the tip of the iceberg of plastic waste, and less than 1%”. But he warns that large amounts of microplastics are
trickling down the food chain and to the sea bed. Cózar revealed these findings at the 5th International Symposium on Marine Sciences, held at Alicante University recently. The researcher also told a crowd of experts and students that there were high concentrations of plastic “in the first kilometre off the coastline”. He added: “Until now, what we knew was that it accumulated in the centre of the gyres, which are
located thousands of kilometres off the coast. But there are, in fact, coastal areas where the concentration is equally high.” According to Cózar, the plastic is blown around at the mercy of the winds, until it hits the coast and starts building up there. The issue is particularly relevant because Spaniards are big fish consumers. “Studies from Thailand and the US show that between 25% and 40% of fish and clams sold in markets contained plastic,” he said. Spain’s coastline has not yet been studied, but Cózar is certain it would yield similar results. Experts recommend investing in beach clean-ups after storms, to remove some of the sea plastic. And Cózar feels that steps are being taken in the right direction, including a ban on plastic bags in Morocco. He also defends invest-
ing in “the removal of plastic from beaches, because storms bring up large amounts of trash, which can then be removed with little effort”. Cózar is all for seeking the co-operation of local fishing guilds and diving associations, to address the issue of plastics at the sea bottom. In Villajoyosa (Alicante), local fishermen have launched a project to turn the plastic caught in their nets into textiles. Other efficient measures, says Cózar, include setting up floating barriers at the mouth of urban rivers, improving waste-management techniques, and researching new materials to replace plastic. He also encourages volunteer clean-ups in coastal areas, and awareness campaigns to demonstrate to people that “what goes into the sea could end up on their plates”.
Not such a dog’s life
A GERMAN cyclist, along with another of group of riders, stopped to help a stray dog, roaming around Cruz de Tea in Granadilla, accompanied by two other pooches. The stray had a chain wrapped around its neck and a leg, and the cyclist called emergency services for help. She was assured it was on
its way, but the help never arrived, even though the Guardia Civil station was just two kilometres away. So the cyclists took matters into their own hands, and, using the oil from a tin of sardines, they removed the chain imprisoning the dog, while the other dogs waited patiently beside him. Once the dog was
free, he and his pals trotted away happily, after behaving peacefully throughout the incident. A witness said: “The dog was so grateful, and although he was in a bit of pain, he didn’t try to bite. He kept licking his rescuer’s arm, encouraging her to finish, and it really was amazing. Unforgettable!”

NEWS IN BRIEF Tragic Ignacio honoured PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy last Saturday received the coffin containing the body of Spaniard Ignacio Echeverría. Tragically, he was stabbed to death in the terrorist attack in London on 3rd June. At the air base, Rajoy presented the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit, posthumously, to Ignacio’s parents, which was bestowed the previous day at the Council of Ministers. Ignacio, 39, was returning from a skateboarding trip with pals at a park near Borough Market, where the terrorist trio stabbed people at random. In all, they murdered eight and injured more than 100, before armed police shot them dead. As they returned home, Ignacio and his friends spotted a woman being attacked by one of the terrorists, and the courageous Spaniard, who raced to her rescue, was mortally wounded himself.
Parking fines hit roof
THREE men from Guía de Isora’s Local Police force, the chief and two officers, have been convicted of injuring a detainee, although one sentence has been appealed. Each defendant must pay a 1,080-euro fine, as well as 400 euros for the injuries caused.
As for the police chief, the court insisted he pay the victim another 7,000 euros because of the damage he sustained from a mouth injury. But the top cop denied assaulting him. The incident occurred at a festival in the Plaza de Alcalá on 31st January last year. At one point, the man went up on stage with a child, but he was ordered off by the officers.
Later, the same individual damaged various Local Police cars, for which he has since been convicted. But when the cops found him, they were alleged to have punched him several times. The officers took him to the local health centre and the South Hospital, but he refused medical treatment. Guía de Isora Town Hall has confirmed that it has appealed the ruling.
Chinese torture as the taxman swoops SOME 300 officers from Spain’s Tax Agency have swooped on dozens of warehouses around Spain, targeting suspected tax fraud by distributors of Chinese products in the country. The raids saw tax-office staff, as well as specialised teams from the National Fraud Investigation Office (ONIF) and customs officials, search around 60 Chinese industrial warehouses at sites including the Cobo Calleja industrial park in Madrid’s Fuenlabrada district, and the El Carrus industrial park in Barcelona. Sites in 11 Spanish regions have been targeted in the operations, with searches expected to last all day. Already, the tax inspectors have opened investigations on dozens of firms operated by Asian businessmen in
Spain. The operation comes just six months after the Tax Agency dismantled a major fraud operation, involving the import of products from Asia and Pakistan. Operation Impala, carried out last December, lifted the lid on the fraudulent undervaluing of goods imported from those countries, to minimise customs duties and sales tax. Spain’s Tax Agency has launched a string of operations against Chinese distributors in recent years, the largest being so-called “Operation Juguetes” (toys) in 2014. That’s when the authorities discovered fraud to the tune of 100 million euros, relating to 15,000 separate import operations, and involving millions of articles over several years. Charges resulting from that operation related to offences such as taxfraud, money-laundering, smuggling, belonging to
a criminal organisation, forgery of official documents and intellectual-property infringements. The operation comes just months after the agency dismantled a major fraud operation involving the import of products from Asia and Pakistan. The organisation, targeted by Operation Juguetes, imported merchandise from China for sale in Europe. But it declared the value of those goods at levels below the legally-established limits. The fraud ring also failed to declare all sales within Spain, thus defrauding the Tax Agency in terms of customs duties, sales tax and company tax. The criminal ring, in operation for several years, is continually changing its delivery points and procedures to avoid being detected. It is even going so far as to import goods meant for the Spanish market via The Netherlands.
A DRIVER, who appeared to have abandoned her car in a parking bay in Palma, Mallorca, has been handed a fine of almost 28,000 euros, some eight years later. The woman, named only as Inmaculada M, parked her Volvo near Plaza de los Patines on 24th March, 2009. The vehicle, which has never been moved since, has flat tyres and is covered in dust. The Volvo’s driver, said to work at the nearby Son Espases Hospital, was denounced by the carpark owners.
Starbucks, for starters ONE of the most renowned coffee-shop chains in the world, Starbucks, is set to open soon in Siam Mall. However, it probably won’t be the only Starbucks on the island, because the company has also been looking at premises in Santa Cruz.
Healthier times ahead
MORE than half of Spaniards believe the economic crash is over, according to a survey conducted between 29th May and 1st June by the GAD3. This international, social-research consultancy says that 52.5% believe 2017 will mark the end of the recession. If so, it would mean that 11.3% fewer people feel the worst is not yet over. An optimistic forecast by the Spanish Government in midMay reckoned the economy would grow by 2.8%. If so, it would be faster than any other EU member state. And Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is sure that sustained growth will create over 500,000 new jobs every year, until 2019.
Tobacco firm on fire
PRODUCTION was brought to a halt at the JTI tobacco factory in Santa Cruz on Tuesday when a fire broke out. It happened in one of the large, tobacco-dust extraction filters, on the factory roof. Firefighters had to remove 100 roof slates, one by one, to cool the embers inside.

Police delighted to find the extra puff POLICE raids have led to the arrest of 13 people in Madrid, plus a haul of 61,205 packs of cigarettes, 74,320 euros in cash and two motors. A sudden surge of contraband tobacco in the capital alerted officers from the National Police and Madrid’s Municipal Police, who grabbed seven Ukrainians and six Bulgarians, working together to import cigarettes into Spain. The cops found a combination of counterfeited brands as well as genuine packets, imported from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine. They had not been declared to the customs, and were sold by the crooks without the relevant tax being handed over. The cigarettes were distributed through shops catering for Eastern European customers, and stocks were moved around the city on a regular basis to escape detection. Yet the bulk of the cigarettes seized were found in a single warehouse. Most of the cigarettes flooding into Madrid were brought overland from Poland, in boxes by the pallet, containing metal plates, and declared, falsely, as clothes being shipped to imaginary addresses.
PASSENGERS on an easyJet flight were left so frightened that one man was physically sick, when a pilot told them there was only a “50/50 chance” of both engines working. Stunned holidaymakers were on the tarmac at Malaga airport when the captain asked for a vote about whether they wanted to stay on the plane, or get off. Passengers say the unnamed pilot told them there was a high chance that only one engine would be working, because of a “technical issue”. But easyJet officials said the pilot was merely asking passengers whether they wanted to get off the plane while the issue was fixed. They also stressed that a pilot would, under no circumstances, attempt to fly with one engine. But the news, which came after the flight had already been delayed for 40 hours, was too alarming for some passengers, who were panic-stricken. They were supposed to fly to Bristol last Thursday but did not board the plane until Saturday. They eventually flew back on a

replacement aircraft, later that day. Passenger Terri Hill said: “He said we could stay on the plane, or he’d see whether we would be allowed to get off again. But we’d been on it for an hour at this point, and had been in Malaga for two nights extra already. “At this point, there was a bit of a mutiny on the plane … an awful lot of shouting and people crying, demanding to get off. “There were about 12 people who wanted to stay on, but the rest of us wanted to get off.”
Jemma Hooper, a motherof-four from Stroud, Gloucestershire, said: “It was absolutely horrendous. They were putting people into a broken plane to make it look like they were trying.” She was travelling with husband Nathan, their children, and her mum, Theresa Lawrence, on flight EZY9958, when they became stranded in Spain because of the “technical issue”. The man who vomited, who did not want to be named, said: “The pilot himself said he’d never heard or done anything like this in 37 years of flying. “He gave us the option, and asked us what he should do. He asked for a show of hands. There were some who just wanted to try it; they wanted to get home. But most didn’t. “There were girls hyperventilating, and lots of people were panicking. There were elderly people on there, and lots of children. The worst thing was that we had to wait another hour or two before

they would actually let us off the plane.” EasyJet issued an apology over the incident, and thanked passengers for their patience. A company spokesman said: “The pilot attempted to use one engine to start the other engine, as is normal procedure. “Because he was aware that the passengers had already been considerably delayed due to a technical problem, the pilot asked them if they would like to get off, or remain on board, while the engine start-up sequence continued. “It was then decided to fly the passengers back on a replacement aircraft. But at no point did the pilot ask passengers, or would ever attempt to fly the aircraft without both engines working correctly.” One witness, who saw the passengers returning through Bristol’s Lulsgate Airport said: “It is possible there was a misunderstanding among some passengers. “It may simply have been that the pilot was asking them if they wanted to remain on the plane while they tried to sort the engine problems out. “However, it was clear that the passengers were absolutely fed up, having already experienced a long delay in getting home.”

The naked truth about Mallorca! A GROUP of 19 British men have been fined after being filmed running naked in broad daylight through the streets of Palma Nova, one of Mallorca’s most popular holiday spots. They had stripped off for a daytime skinny-dip before jogging back to their hotel. Some covered up their privates with one hand, but others left themselves exposed to passers-by, including a young boy. Only one of them appeared to be dressed. With the sun getting hotter by the day, so is the behaviour of some of the younger holidaymakers on the island, who are completely disregarding laws sanctioned two years by Mallorca’s governing body to keep tourists’ behaviour in check. Local politician Carlos Tarancon urged Calvia Council, responsible for Palma Nova, to take tough action against the Brit “strippers” saying: “The diffusion of a video like this
is enough to ruin all the work that’s been done over the past year to improve the image of our municipality. Anti-social behaviour of this kind should be met with zero tolerance.” Elsewhere, in nearby Magaluf, where the main miscreants are usually performing, photographs of alcohol-fuelled women carrying sex dolls, and others lying in the street drunk, have signalled the start of the island’s party season. Every year, Magaluf proves to be a magnet resort for Britain’s lads and ladettes, who flock there in groups to drink the cheap booze and dance their days and nights away. But bad behaviour over the years, including binge drinking, sex in the streets,
fighting and nudity, have given UK youngsters a bad reputation with the Spanish authorities, who have warned there will be serious consequences for those who misbehave. Incredibly, just 18 months ago, newly-elected Magaluf Mayor Alfonso Rodriguez announced that the Brits’ binge-drinking and lewdness was a thing of the past, following a huge crackdown by the local council. Today, though, officials are again fighting anxiously to improve the area’s image, where much of the rowdy behaviour is concentrated in a strip of bars known as Punta Ballena. And, despite the Mayor’s optimism, there have been several controversies surrounding the resort,
which, say tour operators, are putting people off visiting the island altogether. Two years ago, officials announced plans to introduce fines of up to 3,000 euros (£2,182) for anyone caught naked in the street. The new rules also included hefty fines for anyone urinating in public or “balconing”, which refers to drunkards jumping from hotel balconies into swimming pools below. That summer, British police were even dispatched to the party resort as a trial to help Spanish officers deal with victims and offenders from the UK. But it appears to have been a futile exercise, because pictures taken at the resort recently still showed revellers spilling out of bars and falling on the street.
Repsol’s oil bonanza SPANISH fuel giant Repsol has uncovered its biggest discovery since 2012, when it struck oil in the Sagari oil field in Perú. The new source, discovered at the company’s platform in Trinidad and Tobago, is large enough to supply the whole of Spain for two years. Repsol found two gas wells, named Savannah and Macadamia, as part of its ongoing exploration from its offshore rig there. The company owns a 30% holding in the main fuel consortium, bpTT, while the remaining 70% belongs to BP. The two-billion cubic feet (TCF) fuel source is even greater than Repsol’s last major find in Perú, when working alongside Brazilian petroleum company Petrobras. Trinidad and Tobago is one of world’s most oilrich production countries after the US, where Repsol also found a major source in March - the fossil fuel wells in Alaska, where it works in partnership with Armstrong Energy. This latest find means that Repsol has uncovered 47 sources of hydrocarburates in the last 10 years, including eight of the world’s largest.

High-fliers in Spain looking towards U.S.
The F-35A Lightning II, made by Lockheed Martin
SPAIN’S future military aircraft will almost certainly be made in the US, despite the country’s 10.6bn-euro investment on the European fighter-plane. The Spanish Air Force and Navy have set their sights on the F-35 Lightning II strike fighter, made by Lockheed Martin, to replace the F18s and vertical-take-off Harriers, which will be decommissioned midway through the next decade. Of the 86 aircraft currently in service, the ones in the Canary Islands are in most urgent need of replacement. Some 45-50 aircraft will be required for the Spanish Air Force and another 12-15 for the Navy, and the programme could lead to spending more than 6bn euros. It would also cost more than double that figure to supply the logistical support needed to keep the aircraft operational. There is no alternative for the Navy, if it wants to maintain its naval aviation capacity: the ability to launch air power from a ship. The Navy will have to decommission its remaining AV-8B Harrier II Plus aircraft gradually, and the only planes available on the market capable of Vertical/Short Take Off and Landing (V/STOL)
are the F-35s. Without them, the Navy’s flagship Juan Carlos I would be reduced to the category of helicopter carrier. Navy officials are aware that the F-35 is too expensive (between 90-130m euros a unit, not counting the engine) and that their order of 12-15 planes would be too small for any meaningful negotiating margin. But, said high-ranking Navy officials, things would be different if the Air Force decided to order the same model. The future fighter aircraft is one of the priorities of the new Armed Forces’ Capacity Objective, scheduled for approval before the end of this year, said General Fernando Alejandre, the new chief of defence staff. The goal is to replace the F-18 fighters, which, together with the Eurofighter and the EF2000, are at the forefront of the Spanish Air Force’s aircraft programme. The F-18 allowed the Air Force to make a quantum leap forward in the Eighties in terms of technological capacity, but the fleet is now 30 years old and most aircraft have more than 5,000 hours of flying under their wings, with the limit set at around 7,000. Of the 86 aircraft currently in service, the ones in the Canary Islands are in most urgent need of replacement because
they have around three years of service left only. All the F-18s will need to be phased out starting in 2025. Although that may sound like a long time, military sources said the process to acquire a new fighter plane was very long, meaning that a decision should be reached by 2018 at the latest. “The more we wait, the worse negotiating conditions we will have,” said a source. And Air Force sources said that, even with improvements, the Eurofighter cannot compare with the F-35, a fifth-generation fighter that has integrated sensors on the pilot’s helmet, granting 360-degree vision. They also allege that relying on a single model could make the Air Force vulnerable in the event of a structural problem with the Eurofighters. The EF2000 is a European programme in which Spain participates, with a 14% stake, and which creates around 3,000 direct jobs in the country. The F-35 is an American aircraft in whose production process Spain would play an insignificant role. The country was asked to join the F-35 consortium back in the day (along with Britain, The Netherlands, Italy, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Norway and Turkey) but the Defence Ministry declined the invitation.

The fibre optic without cables ELECTROSAT TV SL is one of the main distributors for Internet Canarias, which offers 4 G LTE, a service based on access to a radio broadband.
It is a high-quality Fibre Optic speed, with radio technology, which allows the coverage of any zone and avoids the need of a cable. The installation consists of an antenna being fitted to the roof-top with its “mounting bracket”, cabling, Router Wi-Fi and power supply. The CPE Router supports a fast, reliable connection to multiple devices, and also offers a high-performance, internet line, compared with the USB. With this Router, we guarantee full technical support and replacement, in case there’s a problem with the equipment. Terminology *Wireless means transmitting signals using radio waves as the medium, instead of wires. *Do Wi-Fi and WLan mean the same? YES, they both refer to a wireless network that can transfer data at high speeds, using high-frequency radio signals to transmit and receive data over distances of a few hundred feet, using Ethernet protocol. *Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity *First generation/second
generation/third generation/ fourth generation *1G: Analogue - The Nokia 3310 *2G: WAP enabled - First iphone *3G: Improved data speeds *4G: LTE - Long Term Evolution speed 40Mbps/2Mbps *4G: WiMAX Worldwide Interoperability for microwave access; operates similar to Wi-Fi but at higher speeds; 128Mbps downstream & 56Mbps upstream What is 4 G LTE? LTE stands for Long Term Evolution, an Internet solution that uses EXCOM 4G LTE network to bring a reliable 4G connection in Spain. This technology, which enables you to “surf/navigate” on the internet 10 times faster than a 3G connection, consists of a fixed access, which improves the quality of the service, avoiding a fluctuating signal. Within the broadband coverage, the LTE permits a quick installation of internet connections, Wi-Fi zones, LAN
nets and IP telephone services. Thus, it opens the possibility of having a service similar to the Fibre Optic in non-urban areas/zones. In contrast to other ADSL, the EXCOM gives you uploads and downloads at the same speed. Advantages *If you are going on holiday, you can disconnect the service and you won’t have to pay for those months, and once you return we can reconnect you the service whenever you want. *Because we are FLEXIBLE, you decide, in every moment, which rate is more applicable to you. Get connected to the internet whenever you want and as much as you want. Choose the rate, or create a combination of your own rates and we adapt to your needs. *You can add a fixed telephone line to your Internet contract and discover all the advantages. *You can have mobile phone service without a fixed con-

Wingate School helps Cats Welfare charity! CHILDREN from Wingate school, as part of their persuasive-writing, literacy lessons, have been busy designing the most wonderful “Adopt a Kitten” posters. Last week, Theresa Cresswell from Cats Welfare was welcomed by teacher Mrs Gemma Metcalfe to judge the winner. It was an extremely difficult task because the standard was very high, but, after much deliberation, congratulations went to Daisy Beasley. Some of the children had also made beautiful toys for the kittens to play with, and they brought in piles of wonderful items to be sold in the Cats Welfare shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur, to raise funds. Daisy’s poster will be printed and displayed in shops, bars and pet shops to help home the many cats and kittens, presently in the care of Cats Welfare, Tenerife.

Is your financial plan still ideal? By Paul Montague at blevins Franks
FOR most people, the key aim of financial planning is to protect their wealth. Whether it’s your investments, tax-planning, pensions or estate-planning, there are two key elements to consider: are they upto-date, and, specifically, designed around your circumstances and objectives? Protecting your wealth We need to protect the value of our capital and income, right through our retirement years. The knowledge that you and your spouse will be financially secure provides welcome peace of mind. You may also want to pass wealth on to the next generations. Start by identifying the potential threats, such as low interest-rates, asset volatility, inflation, taxation, changes to legislation etc, then take steps to protect against them.
Long-term personal advice Seek advice from an experienced wealth manager/financial adviser, who is best-placed to deal with all your current and future needs. You want an advisory firm which will be around for the long-term to provide guidance and recommendations as needed, both to yourself and to your spouse and family after you have gone. When you consider your personal family situation, such as income needs, aims, time horizon, risk-appetite etc, your situation is quite unique. You need highlypersonalised financialplanning, and your adviser should take all the time needed to help to get to know you well. He or she should understand how you want your family to inherit your assets and be looked after in future. Building up a close, long-term relationship with one advisory company produces positive results, as well as peace of mind. Understanding local taxation The ideal situation would
be for your advisers to live locally in the Canary Islands. They will understand what it is like to live here and cope with the local bureaucracy. They will also have a deep understanding of the financial-planning needs of expatriates, and all the nuances of the Spanish tax regime. They need to be able to react quickly and help you make adjustments, should your personal circumstances change suddenly, or if there are reforms to local-tax legislation. Brexit makes it even more important to use a locally-based adviser. If you live here, your financial planning, from investments to estate-planning, needs to be set up for Spain, and not for the UK.
And only someone with local experience can provide that. If you move between countries, your adviser should have knowledge of both, and the interaction between the regimes. Investment planning Investment is probably the area in which people are most concerned about losing money. All investments, including bank accounts, carry risk. However, portfolios can carry a wide spectrum of risk, depending on the assets and level of diversification. So your portfolio must, specifically, be based on your personal situation and risk-appetite. Your adviser should obtain a clear and objective view of your risktolerance, and combine with his knowledge of your
situation and aims for you and your family. Regulation Your advisers should have suitable, higher-level, professional qualifications. Regulation is most important, and the company should be authorised by a reputable regulatory body, such as the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority. Killer Women with Piers Morgan
Thursday 22nd June, ITV1, 21.00
Killer Women with Piers Morgan returns to ITV with five more of America’s most notorious female murderers. In this second series (5 x 60 min episodes), produced by Plum Pictures, we follow five cases in a quest to discover what drives a woman to kill. Killer Women with Piers Morgan sees Piers sit down to interview these convicted female murderers in the high security prisons they now call home. Coming face to face with the women behind these unspeakable crimes, Piers delves into each complex case to try and uncover the truth and gain insight into whether justice has been served. He meets the people whose lives have been touched or altered by the crimes hoping to shed light on the truth behind the shocking headlines. Piers speaks to the investigators and lawyers who worked to bring each of the killers to justice and those who believe in their innocence. In moving encounters, he meets family and friends to find out how their lives have been shaken by these shocking crimes. Over the five episodes, Piers meets a highly-educated, affluent woman who is convicted for the fatal stabbing of her high-flying former-colleague.
In the opening episode of Pitch Battle, hosted by Mel Giedroyc, six choirs and vocal groups of all different sizes and musical genres battle it out for a place in the Grand Final. Tonight’s six groups include an a cappella group from Kings College London All The King’s Men, a Polish jazz group Alle Choir, the London International Gospel Choir, a female vocal soul group Songbird Sessions, a Welsh choir Sgarmes, and the newly formed 4 Tune Tellers and Kimmy. To progress, the groups must impress the panel of musical judges - the nation’s favourite choirmaster Gareth Malone, former choirgirl turned international recording artist Kelis and this week’s superstar guest judge singer songwriter Bebe Rexha. The programme opens with an epic musical mash-up, arranged by the Series Musical Director Deke Sharon, who is the Musical Director on the Pitch Perfect movies. Groups then go head-to-head in a series of knock-out choral challenges. First they will each perform their showstopper before battling it out with their opponent in a themed riff-off. The judges will then decide which group goes through to the Solo Battles later on. At the end of the programme only two groups will remain where they must face the ultimate sing-off - the Final Battle. Here they share the same song, before superstar guest judge Bebe Rexha joins in with the group the judges have chosen to go through to the Final. Bebe Rexha will return in the Grand Final to sing with the show’s winning group who will be one step closer to the £50,000 cash prize.

Hospital
Tuesday 20th June, BBC2, 21.00
The opening episode of the second series of Hospital follows events as St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington receives victims from the Westminster terror attack. Wednesday 22 March. In the immediate aftermath of the terror attack on Westminster Bridge, three miles away a major incident is declared at St Mary’s Hospital - the nearest of London’s four Major Trauma Centres. The hospital’s Site Director, Lesley Powls, says: “We are a hospital in the middle of London, we are a Major Trauma Centre, we accept that the chances of there being a terrorist incident are higher for us to have to deal with than certain other hospitals.” Staff at the hospital have just minutes to implement the Trust’s Major Incident Protocol, including a gold, silver, bronze command chain, putting the hospital on lockdown and organising the transfer of some critically ill patients from the Hospital’s already full intensive care unit to sister hospital, Charing Cross. In A&E, specialist trauma teams are assembled, ready to receive the casualties as they start to arrive. Victims include students from a French school trip, 18 year-old Yann and 16 year-old Victor, and British victim Stephen - who needs immediate surgery to save his leg - who is with his wife Cara. Cara says: “It’s really hard when you spend so much time with somebody and then they’re taken away from you and you’re suddenly really, really alone. Cos you just want to grab hold of him, just give him a cuddle and a squeeze & take care of him but then he’s so fragile, you can’t, you just can’t touch him.” In the days after the attack, staff at the hospital attempt to revert to business as usual and arrange for the repatriation of the foreign nationals caught up in the atrocity. Meanwhile, the victims come to terms with what has happened to them. French student, Yann, says: “There was a moment in the ambulance where I felt like I was going, I just wanted to sleep. I didn’t know if I was going to die.” “We’re just an ordinary couple”, says Stephen, “This will change us.”
Supersize Cabbies
Monday 19th June, BBC1, 19.30
A firm of overweight cabbies from Plymouth have pledged to turn their lives around. They embarked on a six-week community weight loss programme to try and reverse the damage done by years of poor diet and little exercise. But for two of the cabbies that brief fitness burst kick-started a drive for a new life. Roger Laughton and Mike Davis (pictured), like a quarter of UK adults, are both obese. They pledged to carry on with a punishing regime of diet and exercise devised by uncompromising fitness trainer Gavin Seymour. A BBC documentary team follows them struggling to change the bad habits of a lifetime and trying to find the willpower to resist the junk food that is part of many a cabbie’s life. For 20-stone Mike it is about overcoming the overeating that started when he was bullied as a child for wearing a hearing aid. And he wants to be a fit dad - his first child is due any day. For Roger, the challenge is to survive. His health is already on the edge - his internal organs are badly damaged by the impact of obesity. At nearly 31 stone, has Roger left it too late to change direction and will his heart withstand the strain as he battles to shed half his body weight?

Who Should We Let In? Ian Hislop On The First Great Immigration Row Thursday 22nd June, BBC2, 21.00
How should we respond to the vast numbers of newcomers arriving on our shores: a force for good to be welcomed in the tradition of tolerance, or a cause for anxiety about jobs, public services and the changing face of Britain’s towns and cities? In this provocative new programme, Ian Hislop sets out to explore the rich history that lies at the heart of our conflicted attitudes to immigration today. Exploring attitudes to immigration in Victorian and Edwardian Britain, Ian casts a searing light on one of the most important and divisive issues of our times. This was the era when British views on immigrants crystallised and when modern Britain’s first peacetime controls on immigration were introduced, leaving a legacy we’re still grappling with today. TheVictorians had a completely open door to foreigners, drawing no distinction between economic migrant and asylum seeker. But as Ian explores, rising immigration in the late 19th century triggered a fierce and very familiar debate - fuelled by clashing values, economic anxiety and the media. When 100,000 Jewish refugees arrived, indigenous working-class hackles rose at higher rents, lower wages and changing inner-city neighbourhoods. Hostility was stoked by Major Evans Gordon, an East End Tory MP who campaigned vigorously to reduce immigration, side by side with the protofascist British Brothers League. Ian also uncovers the surprising case of Mancherjee Bhownagree, an Indian immigrant who stood for Parliament in 1895 - and won - on an anti-immigration ticket. Another young MP, Winston Churchill, spoke out against the tough curbs proposed by the 1902 Royal Commission, lambasting it as the work of prejudice and racism. But the 1905 Aliens Act restricted peacetime immigration for the first time.

The Loch
Sunday 18th June, ITV1, 21.00
Under the cover of dawn, college principal Craig Petrie throws the phone he took from Niall Swift’s dead body into Loch Ness. Annie is disappointed to be off the case but considering the horrific nature of it, husband Alan is relieved. Annie’s mood is further dented when a plane ticket arrives. Her 18-year-old daughter Evie is going to Australia in two weeks. Annie isn’t emotionally ready to let her go. Meanwhile, Ken Patterson, owner of the local abattoir, clashes with his son Jonjo over the Loch Ness Monster stunt. Jonjo takes to his room and later films Dr Marr delivering a suspicious bag to one of the abattoir workers. Jonjo sends the footage to Evie and Kieran, texting again later that day to say he has further information on Dr Marr that could put him in jail. Jonjo then tosses away his bipolar medication, heads out and goes missing. Wracked with worry for their son, Ken and his mother, local probation officer Nicole, report him missing to their friend DCI Smilie.

Ripper Street
Monday 19th June, BBC2, 21.00
It is just day after the cruel murder of Bennet Drake and his once friends Edmund Reid, Homer Jackson and Long Susan are drawn together to bring his killer - a new serial killer stalking Whitechapel’s streets ‐ to justice. They are hampered by one fact, they themselves are now hunted by the police for the extra- judicial killing of Long Susan’s father Theodore Swift.

Love Your Garden
Wednesday 21st June, ITV1, 20.00
In the first of this new series, Alan Titchmarsh and the team head to Plymouth to create a show-stopping contemporary garden for an outstanding ex-Marine, Mark Ormrod, 36, and his young family. Despite tragically losing both his legs and an arm in Afghanistan in an IED incident, Mark made a remarkable recovery and has become an inspiration to injured veterans everywhere. Although he thinks nothing of going out of his way for others, his run down, uninviting garden has remained a challenge too far, and because he desperately needs an outdoor space where he can play safely with his children and enjoy time together as a family, his friends and colleagues asked Alan and the team to help. Transforming the Ormrods plot is a huge challenge but Alan, Katie, Frances and David manage to create a truly spectacular contemporary garden. They show how lush tropical planting can work brilliantly in a low maintenance garden and finish it with lots of clever ideas and features that you’ll be desperate to try at home.

Leigh-Hannah’s grand gesture By Gordon Slayney
THE grand final of this year’s Tenerife Loves Karaoke took place last Saturday at Showtime Live, Karting World, Las Americas, and it proved to be a fantastic night.
Ten finalists, from various bars across the South of the island, battled it out to be crowned champion and win 1,000 euros, with a chance to appear at the TEAs awards later this year, or sing at Showtime Live. Each of the four judges had 50 points per singer available to them: 30 points for musical ability, 10 points for stage presence, and further 10 for the performer’s interpretation of the song. They all sang their hearts out, and each one owned the stage, competing for a spot in the top three. After a keenly-sung first round, Tracie Steele’s rendition of “Where The Boys Are”, Kyle Ward singing “Valerie” and Leigh-Hannah Norton, offering Disney’s “Part Of Your World” from the Little Mermaid, were good enough for them to reach the three-way singoff in search of the top prize.
The three finalists handed in their second song choices, and Tracey took to the stage first, belting out Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary”, with as much vigour as Tina herself … and it had the audience going wild! Kyle went a bit more modern, his final song choice being Ed Sheeran’s “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You”, which had the audience again baying for more. Last up was Leigh-Hannah, representing Costa del Silencio’s Albatross Bar. She chose Adele’s “When We Were Young”. The crowd were on their feet by the time she had finished a faultless performance, and it proved enough for her to
be crowned 2017 Karaoke Queen. The trophies were awarded by John Zammit, sales and marketing manager for Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly. Naturally, LeighHanna was thrilled to win the competition … and so were her children. They promptly jumped on stage and grabbed her 1,000-euro prize. She had promised it to them if she were successful, and it was a touching moment. In true Eurovision style, once the publicity shots had been taken, LeighHanna took to the stage again to perform the winning song. All in all it was a fantastic night, and credit must go to the 10 singers, because, in my eyes, they were all winners. Many thanks to the judges, to Nathan for doing the sound and lighting and for looking after me; to all the staff at Showtime Live; to all the contestants, not just in the final but to all who entered the various heats, and, finally, to the competition sponsor, Gorilla Grill, Pub and Kitchen. The strapline we use for TLK is “you’ve gotta sing it to win it”, and Leigh-Hannah did exactly that. She sung it and won it! Congratulations!

An early-morning shock Wedding gate-crasher for ship’s drug suppliers leaves guests worried A MOROCCAN man disrupted a Spanish wedding when he stormed into the church, shouting: “Allah is great.”
A FISHING ship from Venezuela, intercepted in the early hours of 4th June, had bales of cocaine ready to be thrown into the sea in case the police nabbed them. They were apprehended some 900 miles south-west of the Canaries, but Spain was their actual destination. The facts were revealed by Home Office Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido at Monday’s press conference, held at
Las Palmas harbour, to where the ship was transferred with its six Venezuelan occupants, who were arrested. A seventh person, linked directly with the shipment of cocaine and its financing, was detained in Venezuela. It is the second vessel from the South American country to be seized in under a month, while carrying narcotics for an drug organisation based in Spain. The minister added: “A
Venezuelan fishing ship has been intercepted carrying 1,200 kilos of cocaine.” He also said that the purity level of the drug was approximately 80%. Zoido congratulated both the National Police and the Custom Authorities, stressing that the intervention took place at dawn. That was to prevent the crew from throwing the drug bales overboard, using the anchor, by the time they noticed the police.
The 22-year-old student, who was not named, was filmed charging at the altar and frightening guests and the happy couple at the ceremony, held at the Church of San Pablo, in Valladolid. He also attempted to throw liturgical objects and attack the priest. The ceremony was stopped for 20 minutes while police arrested the man, who is now in custody. Video footage showed the ushers trying to detain him as he stood at the front of the church. Several men tumbled down the stairs leading up to the altar as they tried to grab him. He was eventually chased into a corner of the church, before they held him outside until police arrived. The student, who lives in Valladolid, was “accused of disturbing public order, threats and crime against religious feelings”. There was no suggestion
that he was armed, but a National Police source said he had a history of disorderly conduct. The officiating priest told the 100-or-so guests that the incident began when a “group of young troublemakers” became noisy at the back of the church. “Suddenly, there was a person shouting, and he charged the altar,” he said. “A lot of people, including the bride’s mother, were crying, and there were people who had already jumped out of the pews because we did not know whether this person came alone, or if he were armed.” The priest said he couldn’t understand what the man was saying as he approached the altar, but witnesses claimed to hear him shouting, “Allah is great”. He also feared that, because of the Westminster terror attack, he might have been armed. The intruder appeared to be “between 20-30 years of age, brown features and a beard, but no weapon”. After his arrest, police checked the church for potential explosives before allowing the wedding ceremony to continue.
Salesman facing 20 years Plane’s hen-do girls if he’s murdered his wife warned: Thou shalt A BRITISH car salesman living in Mallorca, who claimed his wife died during a sex game that went horribly wrong, has been accused of murder. And Spanish prosecutors have let 51-year-old Warren Lyttle know that he faces up to 20 years behind bars if they are successful. He was arrested in January 2016 after confessing to killing his 49-year-old wife, Lisa Jane Lyttle, at his home in Costa de la Calma, a short drive from Magaluf, and has been imprisoned ever since. He maintained that the mother-of-one, from Kilburn, north London, choked to death during a sado-masochistic roleplay, which she had proposed. But police soon started a murder investigation, and state prosecutors have confirmed that they are treating Lisa Jane’s death as murder. A date for the trial, which will take place in the Mallorcan capital of Palma, has not yet been set. Prosecutors make it clear
that they do not believe Lyttle’s version of events. They feel he killed his wife during a row by strangling her with a phone-charger cord during a “surprise attack”, leaving her no chance to defend herself. As well as the lengthy prison sentence, prosecutors want Lyttle to pay 180,000 euros (£157,000) compensation to Lisa Jane’s grown-up daughter. His wife, who lived in London but travelled regularly to Majorca to spend time with her expat husband, died in the early hours of 23rd January 2016.
Her husband alerted police and paramedics in a 999 call, but they were unable to save her. And a post-mortem revealed that Lisa Jane died from asphyxia, through strangulation. Around 300 people held a five-minute silence in memory of Mrs Lyttle during a condemnation of her killing the same day. Mr Lyttle’s mum, Joan, said from her Neasden home in north-west London: “We don’t know how this could have possibly happened. It has left us in total shock. We’re still waiting to talk to Warren to find out what went on.” She added: “There were no problems in the marriage as far as we knew. They were happy.” But Lisa Jane’s family were said to have told Spanish police that Lyttle, who has lived in Majorca for around a decade, had a turbulent relationship with his wife, who spent most of her time in Britain. She had flown to Majorca just two days before her death for a week’s holiday.
not drink or swear!
REVELLERS on a hen-party, accused of being drunk and abusive on a flight to Tenerife, were forced to sign a behaviour contract to ensure they were able to return home to Scotland.
Bride-to-be Stephanie Kerr, claimed staff picked on her party as they headed to the island. She was livid at their treatment by the Jet2 crew, and she and her nine pals sat in silence after their passports had been confiscated. Stephanie, who has a child, said: “As soon as we sat down on the way out, they said that as we were a hen-do, we shouldn’t have booked because they are a family airline. “They then said we couldn’t drink or stand. We couldn’t believe it. It was humiliating. There was a stag-do in front of us, drinking and walking around freely.” Glaswegian Stephanie, from Govan, who plans to wed in September, denied her pals
were drunk, or out of control. But she said they had to sign a document stating they wouldn’t smoke or drink in the airport, or on the plane on the way back, and would obey crew, stay seated and not swear. However, airline chiefs were adamant the women had been “drunk, disruptive and abusive”, and they said one had laid down in an aisle and refused to move. A spokesman added: “The group had to be spoken to several times due to noise levels and use of offensive language. It also became clear that they had been consuming their own alcohol, illicitly, during the flight. “After been told they could not drink any more alcohol, several women became argumentative and abusive, with one shouting that she would get free flights with another airline.” He said the captain made a tannoy announcement about the zero-tolerance policy for disruptive fliers, and crew warned they could be barred. But, thankfully, it had an impact on their behaviour.

Car Data… is it worth anything?
Longing for it By Emma
By Carl pattison from Robot
WE extend it, clip in more of it and buy any product that promises to give us it … we all love long hair. Seen, by some, as the most-feminine of all lengths, it has been sought after for years. Having it can be a chore to some, and achieving it can be a mission that never ends - but at what price? To me, longer hair is gorgeous, just as long as it’s cared for. This means regular brushing and cutting, and treatments to maintain it. Otherwise, those longer tresses can appear unkempt and messy,
from Motorworld
a look you don’t want. Keep up to your haircut every 2-3 months, to keep those ends in shape. Skipping cuts will only mean more will have to come off next time. If you have split ends, they travel up the hair shaft creating thinner, broken hair. Apply hair masques, frequently, and always use a deep moisturising shampoo. Never, ever, comb
wet (or dry) long hair; brush with a wide paddle brush, to gently remove strands of dead hair. Try to let longer hair dry naturally, or use a gentle heat setting. Keep colouring simple, and try to stay away from bleaching. Most want it, but most have so much trouble looking after it. Long hair can be a dream, but also your worst nightmare.
Belt up, ladies By Carl Patisson
THEY are always the forgotten fashion accessory, and the last thing you would think to pick up on a shopping spree, but belts make such a statement. From delicately slim to almost basquestyle, belts can bring an outfit to life, and give your figure so much more shape. Grab a belt to cinch in your waist, and give yourself more of
an hour-glass figure if you’re heavier in the bust area. Larger-fitting clothes over bustier women
tend to make the whole figure seem bigger; give it more of a focus feature by pulling in your waist with a matching belt. If you’re colour matching, then it’s good to tone in your bag, shoes and belt, or clash your look with an opposing shade. If you’re not adding bling with jewellery, then pick out a embellished belt to add interest, or the new, subtle, studded variety. There are so many to choose from, so don’t overlook them when you’re on your next fashion hunt.
WHEN we buy a new car, we are looking at the costs and the make of the model, etc. But one of the most valuable things about your new car will be something you’ll never even see.
Forget the engine size, shining exterior or colour; the data the vehicle holds will be much more valuable. Many people have made fortunes over the years by selling cars and lorries. And, for many of us, it is the second-most- expensive item we will buy, after a house or apartment. Experts now say that the actual value of the vehicle, as we currently know it, will pale in comparison with the riches to be gleaned from the car’s data. Data is the currency of the digital age, and vehicle data could be the beginning of a modern-day gold-rush. That’s the claim of many high-profile, carcompany chiefs, from manufacturers such as Daimler. Cars increasingly have sensors and cameras to track their performance and their surroundings. Vehicle sensors, for example, can tell more accurately when an engine part
is in need of replacement. A back-up camera doesn’t just help us park; it can tell how many pedestrians or vehicles are on a street. Such sensors generate data, which, in turn, are analysed to make money. If you think this is impossible, just look at Facebook and Google, for example, who offer free services to billions of users, and make millions from the data they collect. Self-driving cars are a thing of the future, but they’re not that far away now, and some are already being tested. In many ways, others already have selfdriving options, such as parking. A genuine self-driving car can generate one gigabyte of data per second, as stated by data consulting companies. At that rate, by driving for about 30 seconds, this would fill up the memory on a typical iphone. More data, potentially, means more money, and all sorts of creative business ideas and opportunities can arise.
By collecting data from vehicles, one is effectively digitising the public space, unlocking potential safety, security, municipal and commercial benefits. The selling of data has already started in certain parts of the world such as Israel, for example. One of the first, and probably the mostcommon, is the parking app, which means that a car driving down a street can identify empty parking spaces, thanks to the sensors and cameras. Obviously, this information is valuable when using a car in a crowded city or town. It has been predicted that by 2020, vehicle manufacturers will be able to make more money selling the vehicle’s data than by flogging the car itself! The ultimate goal of collecting data is to build self-driving cars that can manoeuvre safely on all roads, anywhere. But without vehicle data to “self-train” cars, they will not function.

When it comes to the crunch! By Val Sainsbury The benefits of carrots are plentiful.
With this crunchy, orange powerfood, you get Vitamin A and a host of other powerful health advantages, including beautiful skin, cancer prevention, and antiageing properties. Other reasons to eat this amazing vegetable are: Improved vision Western culture’s understanding of carrots as being “good for the eyes” is one of the few we got right. They are rich in betacarotene, which is converted into Vitamin A in the liver, and it is then transformed in the retina to rhodopsin, a purple pigment necessary for night vision. Beta-carotene has also been shown to protect against macular degeneration and senile cataracts. A study found that people who eat the most beta-carotene had a 40% lower risk of macular degeneration, than those who consumed a small amount. Cancer prevention Studies have shown carrots to reduce the risk of lung,
breast and colon cancers. Researchers have just discovered falcarinol and falcarindiol, which have anti-cancer properties. Falcarinol is a natural pesticide produced by the carrot that protects its roots from fungal diseases. Carrots are one of the only common sources of this compound. A study showed a third-lower cancer risk by carrot-eating mice. Healthy teeth and gums
It’s all in the crunch! Carrots clean your teeth and mouth. They scrape off plaque and food particles just like toothbrushes or tooth paste. Carrots stimulate gums and trigger a lot of saliva, which, being alkaline, balances out the acid-forming and cavity-forming bacteria. The minerals in carrots prevent tooth damage. Anti-ageing The high levels of betacarotene act as an anti-
oxidant to cell damage done to the body through regular metabolism. It helps to slow down the ageing of cells. Health-glowing skin Vitamin A and anti-oxidants protect the skin from sun damage, and deficiencies of this vitamin cause dryness to the skin, hair and nails. Vitamin A prevents acne, dry skin, pigmentation, blemishes, uneven skin tone and premature wrinkling. A powerful antiseptic
Raw, shredded carrots, as well as those which have been boiled and mashed, can be used on cuts. They are known by herbalists to prevent infection. Beautiful skin Carrots are used as an inexpensive and very convenient facial mask. Just mix grated carrot with a bit of honey. Prevent heart disease Studies show that diets high in carotenoids are associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Carrots not only have beta-carotene, but also alpha-carotene and lutein. The regular consumption of carrots also reduces cholesterol levels, because the soluble fibres in carrots bind with bile acids. Cleanse the body Vitamin A assists the liver in flushing out the toxins from the body, and reduces the bile and fat in the liver. The fibres present in carrots help clean out the colon, and hasten waste movement. Prevent stroke From all the above benefits, it is no surprise that a Harvard University study showed that people who ate more than six carrots a week are less likely to suffer a stroke than those who ate only one carrot a month.
Paper fans keep the kids so cool
AS Spaniards swelter in the first hot spell of the year, Madrid’s health commissioner is recommending making paper fans to combat the rising mercury. Jesús Sánchez Martos said he is not a supporter of air conditioning in schools, and suggested that children should make fans out of paper to deal with the heat in their classrooms. “Besides helping to
feel cooler, this activity could be part of “a very relevant occupational therapy for children, making them the way we used to when I was a kid: fold, fold, fold and there’s the fan,” said the regional official in statements to SER radio station. “Air conditioning is not the solution for everything, and classrooms could be ventilated.” He expressed a preference
for “keeping hydrated, and always having water in the classrooms”. The statements came on the same day that the Madrid health department activated a special plan to prevent negative health effects from the high temperatures recorded in the region - and elsewhere in Spain - since early this week. On Wednesday, there were several reports of Ma-
drid school children suffering from bouts of vomiting, heatstroke and fainting. Isabel Galvín, secretary general of the Madrid Teaching Federation of the CC OO labour union, said there were reports of problems at schools in Rivas and Parla, and that students at a school in El Escorial suffered from heatstroke during their gym class.
“The Department of Education should urgently supply centres with what they need,” she said, criticising the regional government’s lack of investment in school infrastructure to deal with these situations. In the meantime, four days of “unusually high temperatures” are now giving way to an official heat wave, according to the Spanish weather service, AEMET.

Bring it to life… By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic
THERE is nothing like a plant or two to bring a room to life. In my opinion, a house isn’t a home until you have a few, indoor plants, here and there. They are, quite often, the interior designer’s best friend, when it comes to finishing off dressing a room.
You can look in any glossy interior magazine, and there will always be a bit of greenery, or some pretty flowers in a vase, in each picture. You don’t necessarily need green fingers for interior plants, and, of course, you can go for fake flowers, too. It’s not cheating - they can work just as well. Luckily, when it comes to the real thing, some of the most-hardy and low-maintenance ones are actually the most beneficial, removing toxins and purifying the air. This can help with sleep and create a cleaner atmosphere in the house. A few, popular interior plants to consider and
look up, which possess these great factors AND make beautiful decorative pieces for the house, are the Spider plant, the Dragon tree, Aloe Vera, Snake plant, cactus, and the good old English ivy. All are really affordable, and super-low maintenance. As for flowers, there has never been such a great life-like selection available in shops as there is now; not the typical, old-fashioned, plastic type, but those made of felt, silk - and more. And it’s not just the flowers to get excited about at the moment, but also the accessories available and on-trend, like wicker baskets to cover plant pots,
all available in many colours, shapes and sizes. Shabby-chic wooden crates, glass bottles and vases, and not forgetting statement plant stands and raised and hanging planters, all add so much character. So, if you’re looking for a cheap and simple way to spruce up your home, plants are definitely the way forward! Don’t be scared to go over-the-top, either; grouping various plants together can really make a statement, and add depth to an empty area. Mix it up; different textures, heights and shades can all work well together. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
Bringing the beach home IF you love the beachlook, good news! Decorating coastalstyle is one of the most budget-friendly ways to go. However, sometimes it takes a bit of inspirational help to achieve the appearance you want. If you love the look of an all-white decorating scheme, but are stuck on how to pull it off, or need to use what furniture you’ve already got, but you're not sure how to transform that drab table into coastal chic, don’t worry. Choosing a colour White is usually the predominant colour in the coastal-style home, but there are no firm rules. However, sticking with one or two colours is a very budget-friendly way to go coastal. Accessories These turn a PlainJane room into a Fancy-Nancy. And they also easily help to capture the coastal look on a budget. Found objects are free, so don’t forget to scour shorelines for a great catch. Just be green and
leave anything living alone. Shells that still have their resident inside won’t lend a lovely look or smell to your dwelling space! Slipcovers and soft furnishings Use slipcovers to transform shabby furniture to chic, and achieve that effortless, beachside look. For fabric, look for muslin or osnaburg, a vintage-style fabric which is usually much less expensive than linen or canvas. There are several ways to
fashion a slipcover, but one of the simplest is to drape your sofa in fabric and add ties. If you have the skills or know someone who does, sewing a fitted slip cover gives your sofa a custom look, and will appear as though you spent a fortune. Wood furniture ideas Outdated wood furniture can easily be transformed into a shabby chic, coastal look with a bit of paint and sandpaper. Or check unfinished wood furniture stores for
great deals. Save even more by asking for distressed or damaged items, or floor samples. Even a beginning do-ityourselfer can slap on a coat of paint and then sand it off again. And it’s great fun, too! What is it about seaside homes? In one word - it’s the light. Choose things that reflect or channel light easily, such as mirrors or mirrored furniture, chrome or silver, glass, and lightweight fabrics like linen, muslin or cotton.

Top Motors galore, for oldies and youngsters! By Kirk Readings A TENERIFE motor convention, resembling the valetparking of a family party worthy of the Sultan of Brunei, featured a list of dazzling cars, including Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche and BMW. From Thursday to Saturday last week saw the first Top Motor Canarias show at Arona’s prestigious Magma Art and Congress centre, sponsored by Canaautos, Las Chafiras. It offered an unusual collaboration between a radio-based show and this dazzling display of machines… one we hope to see time and again. Oasis Fm, celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, spent the afternoons positioned in a corner of the main Magma hall, with a view of some of the most desirable and exotic motor vehicles the island has ever seen. The sight of presenters on Tenerife’s favourite radio station barely scratched the surface of the spectacle, spread over two floors and three halls, with an outside display as well. On entering the main doors,
visitors were greeted with a display of motor-sport vehicles, including the Subaru Impreza and Renault GT5 rally-car icons. The upstairs vantage saw an
impressive collection of more classic models, including a beautiful Rolls Royce basking in the spotlight, as majestically as it had been designed to do decades ago.
Magma had it all, with a car auction taking place alongside the peerless Ferrari F50, surrounded by no fewer than a dozen of its siblings. If the impression that this extravaganza was reserved for the most devout petrolheads, be assured that with go-karts, F1 simulators and a Scalextric track, even the children were considered at an event to which the next generation of motor-lovers were introduced. They were, undoubtedly, spellbound by the nostalgia of the classics, and the magical aura of the sleek-running lines of the low-slung, sportschassis models. Oasis Fm spent two days engaging with, and interviewing, some of the visitors, show-stand demonstrators, sponsors and organisers.
And the station’s presenters provided an audio commentary of a show which drew positive acclaim from those listeners around the island who couldn’t make the live proceedings. In addition to this multimillion-euro display, there was the presence of the island’s best-established motor-dealers. It meant that show-goers could further benefit from the experience with an array of desirable day-to-day vehicles on offer, test-drives being booked by the dozen. The awe in the spectators’ faces among the vehicles told a tale: this show was an outstanding success, and there’ll be diary entries in all formats upon the announcement of the next one.

on a giant screen at El Medano plaza, just a short kick away from their home stadium. Victory will take Tenerife into the final against Valencia or Barcelona. That semi-final kicks off on Sunday at 11am, also in Madrid, and with the same TV and giant screen options. Whatever the outcome, Tenerife can be proud of their great season, and they are already re-signing the squad’s core for 2017-18. Another Gran Canaria runner, Victor Rubio, also had plenty to celebrate after competing in the Trail race. He finished in style by proposing to his girlfriend as soon as he had completed the course. The Bluetrail event was organised by Tenerife Cabildo and sponsored by Fundación Cajamar Canarias, the Canarian Government and Tenerife Tourism. This spectacular Tenerife Bluetrail event marked its seventh consecutive year, and, as always, was deemed to be a complete success. During the race, a total of six runners had to be airlifted from Teide National park, either from injury or fatigue. A jubilant Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said: “We are fulfilling several goals that we have earmarked, such as the promotion of sport and the generation of employment. “One of the lines of work we have in the Tenerife 2030 strategy is to bank on sport for effort, solidarity and equality, plus healthy-livinghabits and health.” Alonso added: “Tenerife is an island, which is open 365 days to the sport, because of its weather conditions, and the tourism-sport
link is growing more every day. “We have to advance and promote our tourism product, and this type of promotion helps us bring people here and generate economy, as well as making the island of Tenerife known to the rest of the world. “In addition, we have opted for Puerto de la Cruz as a great generator of the North economy, and this type of event is a clear sign. “The goal is to generate activity, and, undoubtedly, the Tenerife Bluetrail does just that … and it translates into more employment.” By 7.30pm, around 250 athletes had withdrawn for various reasons, but overall, the race developed
without major incidents. That was thanks, mainly, to the huge security operation, made up of about 550 people distributed along the route. They included health workers and physiotherapists, together with emergency personnel and security. World Transplant Games heading for Spain, at last SPAIN, the acknowledged global leader in transplants, is hosting the World Transplant Games for the first time, from 25th June to 2nd July in Malaga. At least 2,500 transplant athletes, from 52 countries, will be taking part in these 21st biennial Games, which feature various sports, including athletics, badminton, basketball, bowls, cycling, darts, golf, kayaking, swimming, padel, petanca, squash, tennis, table-tennis and volleyball. The Games are organised by the World Transplant Games Federation, which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. The Spanish Transplant Sport Association is bring-
ing the Games to Spain, with the support of the Andalusian Transplant Coordination Service and the General University Hospital of Malaga’s team of medical professionals. Javier Castrodeza, Secretary-General for Health and Consumption, said: “The Spanish transplant system is an example for the rest of the world to follow. “Hence the importance we attribute in Spain to hosting a sporting event such as this, which will help increase the international projection of our country, and enhance our transplantation image. “With their effort, the transplant patients competing are showing citizens that to
donate organs is a worthy deed.” The Games were first held in Portsmouth in 1978, with 99 athletes participating. They were promoted by British surgeon Maurice Slapak, who decided to organise sports competitions for transplant patients in Britain as a way of stimulating and motivating them. He also wanted to demonstrate to the world that there is life after a transplant, and, thus encouraging people to become organ donors. Since then, the Games, staged every other year, has become a top-notch event, combining health and sport. The Spanish team comprise
77 transplant athletes, four of whom are children. At previous games, the team flew their flag high by winning several gold, silver and bronze medals, in cycling, athletics, mini-marathon, badminton, swimming and tennis. Experts believe sport is one of the best therapies for the physical and psychological rehabilitation of transplant patients. And, said Beatriz Dominguez-Gil, Director-General of the ONT: “Behind every transplant patient, there is a story of struggle and triumph over adversity.” Mateo Ruiz-Jódar, President of the Spanish Transplant Sport Association, added: “Sport is one of the
ways that many transplant patients, like me, have of showing our gratitude to society for the generosity they show by donating.” Ms Dominguez-Gil is grateful for the public’s generosity, which has made it possible for organ donation in Spain to have increased by 10.2% so far this year. By 15th May, transplants were up by 11.5%: lung (+25%), liver (+17%) and kidney (+ 9.3%) transplants have increased the most. “We want to express our gratitude to all Spanish society for its generosity to transplant patients and its support of the Spanish transplant system, and, also, to all the professionals of the transplant network.”

Things can only get better… IT was back to business as usual at the Phoenix Bar, with Mitch taking a maximum before losing a leg to the Playboys’ oneand-only Fluff, who celebrated a 7-1 defeat by overcoming a bottle of Jagermeister. Spear Chuckers were grateful to Tommo, who put Daddy Cool to the sword, and his team followed with a sweet 5-3 win in the valley. Emerald Lounge thought they were heading for their first win in the top league, but Waterfall denied them by taking the trebles to secure a creditable draw. Across the top square, a similar draw was fought out by The Tavern and Bar 180 A, the visitors taking the last game to level the contest.
Sundowners’ welcome to the top flight did not improve this week as they welcomed The Pub, who took all eight points on offer. But, as they say: “Things can only get better” for the home team. However, The Pub had plenty to celebrate by making it 24 wins out of 24. Well done, boys! For the second week, three Nauta teams and three different results. Firstly, Nomads a 5-3 victory from a stubborn Bar Leones team, while the Nutty lot gained a worthy 4-4 result at the Playgirls, with plenty of banter accompanying some excellent darts. But Naughty Nautas endured a long, long night before being overcome 6-2 by Marilyns A, who find themselves top of the league. Legends suffered their first reverse this season when The Red Devils posted a 6-2 result. But Sandys kept up their own 100% record by

Life in the fast lanes POWER, speed, and cool-thinking are good qualities for uphill rallyracers, scorching up the roads of Tenerife at this busiest time of their season. Last weekend, it was the Subida a Guia de Isora, and this weekend it’s a sprint up through Santiago del Teide in the Subida a Tamaimo. The winners in last weekend’s two categories will hope to carry their form over to Tamaimo for another testing weekend. In the touring-car class, Jose Antonio Aznar clocked a winning time of 3mins 6.26secs in his Genetta G55Gt3 to shade out Sergi Pañella, driving a Mitsubishi.

The Barqueta (Barchetta) class saw Jonathan Alvarez shave a bit more off the sprint with 3mins 6.22secs in his BRCB52, just a pinch ahead of Cesar
Rodriguez, in his Silver Car. If you’re quick today (Friday), you can catch the 70 cars parked up for pre-Tamaimo rally inspection at Avenida
Maritima, Playa de la Arena, from 3.30pm to 7.30pm. Tomorrow (Saturday), racing starts on the main run, from just above Los Gigantes to Tamaimo, around some tight, twisting bends up the TF 454. Test runs are from 10am and noon, with the first two sprints from 2.30pm and 4.30pm. On Sunday, the final runs start at 10am and noon. The TF 454 and TF 47 are closed to public traffic from 7.30am on Saturday and Sunday. But thousands of people will line the route each day from some precarious vantage points, so please be extremely careful, and be aware of stewards’ flags and instructions.
‘Ryder Cup’ success for squad of Britons NEW friends and new memories were made at Buenavista del Norte last Sunday in Isla Baja, as Great Britain beat a Canarian team 8-4 in Tenerife´s very own Ryder Cup competition. The iconic tournament’s name was used proudly as part of the memorial event for Seve Ballesteros, who not only designed the north-west Tenerife course, but was a driving force behind the foundation of the better-known, modern Ryder Cup. The British team roared into a 4-0 lead in the opening fourball games, with Steve Surrey beating Carlos Sunesonse on the last hole, and Adam Sagar also claiming a late victory over home captain Luis Claverie.
Their hosts fought back hard to level, thanks to victories for Francisco Cea, Jose M Rodriguez, Carlos Robles and Pedro Urriza. But, unlike the sea lashing the cliffs below the beautiful course, the tide didn’t turn completely and GB restored their superiority by taking the remaining four games. Take a bow, British professionals, Jordan Gibb, Andrew Marshall, Lee Mackie, Michael McCarthy, Adam Sagar, Colton Davis, Steve Curry and Lee Corfield. The spirit of international competition and friendship was a fitting tribute to Seve, who died from cancer in 2011, and the match has helped to promote and top-up Seve’s memorial foundation.

CD Tenerife
Just three games to glory By Colin Kirby
FROM the brain to the foot, to the back of the net, Omar´s thunderbolt goal stood out in this splendid Tenerife victory, which wrapped up the regular season, secured fourth place, and set up a two-legged promotion semi-final against Cadiz.
Real Zaragoza 1 CD Tenerife 2
Omar was just one of wholesale changes to the team, and they presented coach Pep Marti with the sweetest of selection problems for the vital games ahead. Marti had to adopt a splitpersonality at Zaragoza: fourth spot and the away leg first (last night, Thursday) was the preferred option. But Amath, Suso, and Camille were rested to avoid an extra booking that would exclude them from the first leg. It was also important to give fringe players some game-time and matchfitness, so Falcon went in goal, Carlos Ruiz resumed his centre-defence role, Cristo started up front, and Omar patrolled the left wing. And they all showed their worth. Choco Lozano looked hungry in attack, but, after getting in good
positions, he dwelt on the ball too long instead of shooting. Gaku was back to his best and involved in everything. He made a great defensive intervention before feeding the ball up to Choco, who curled a shot wide. Cadiz also changed their normal line-up, and young Brazilian striker Rai was a constant danger. Cani got a clear shot in for Cadiz when the defence parted, but Falcon made an outstanding save. At the other end, Choco squandered another opening after controlling a through-ball to him brilliantly.
The Tenerife opener was pure genius. Omar pounced on a loose ball just inside his own half, with two markers squeezing in on him. But he spotted the home keeper slightly off his line, and stroked a long, looping ball at the goal. It clipped the underside of the crossbar and crossed the line, with a little nudge from the floundering keeper. Just after the half-hour mark, Choco was replaced by Jouini after a knee injury became too troublesome. Falcon made another smart save, but, at the break, Tenerife still had plenty of work ahead. With Raul Camara at leftback as cover for Camille, Edu Oriol was given a rare outing on the right. But he wasn’t convincing. A bad mistake threatened the goalmouth, and he was relieved to see a shot hit the post. Shibasaki laid on a perfect pass to set up Jouini for a shot, but the home keeper was glad to restore a little pride with a neat save. Then, just short of an hour’s play, Tenerife increased their lead as Ruiz rose to head in an Omar corner. Tenerife gave a debut to another home-grown talent, Nahuel taking over from Camara. And his first
touch was a well-played clearance from a Cadiz attack. There was a bit of good fortune for Tenerife as a Zaragoza header was cleared off the goal-line by Ruiz. But Tenerife could have stretched the lead after Gaku played the ball off Cristo before firing it at the keeper. It was a meaningless game for Zaragoza, yet they staged a late revival with a Guti goal, the ball going under Falcon with five minutes left on the clock. Former Manchester City player Samaras led the charge, and Rai missed with his head. Jouini had the last word with an injury-time chance that the home keeper just got to with an arm. Sunday night (8 pm) could be another landmark date for the home leg of the semi-final against Cadiz. They are coached by Alvaro Cervera, who guided Tenerife back up into the second division. Should the two-game aggregate score be level after 30 minutes of extra-time, there are no penalties, and Tenerife would triumph because of their better league record against the visitors. That safeguard could prove vital if last night (Thursday), the first leg hasn’t gone to plan. The other semi-final is between Huesca and Getafe.
Wheelchair Basketball
They’re oiled for action IF you like your sport fast and tough, the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships will tick all your boxes with the best male and female action. Adeje is hosting the contest in two sports halls, the Pabellon Las Torres and the Pabellon Polideportivo Municipal, both on the western side of the old town. Las Torres, which hosts the opening ceremony at 5pm on Wednesday (21st June), will also stage the first two matches, both involving Spain. The ladies lead the way against Turkey at 6.30pm, followed by the men, who face Switzerland at 8.45. The championships really hit their pace on Thursday (22nd) with seven matches, including the UK v Sweden
in the men’s competition, at 2.15pm in the municipal hall. The UK ladies get underway against Germany at 5.45pm in Las Torres. There’s another double bill of UK games next Friday (23rd) as the men take on Israel at 3.30pm at Las Torres, while the ladies face France at 4.30 in the municipal hall. How it all works Here’s a little guide to the basic rules of the sport, including the subtle differences from the nonwheelchair version. Each team have five players on court, who play four 10-minute quarters. The court measurements are exactly the same as the professional game, including the height of the baskets. Players have 24 seconds
to shoot after they gain possession of the ball, and a clock will give them and the crowd a gentle reminder as it ticks down. In this variety of basketball, wheelchairs count as part of a player’s body in terms of contact, charging and
blocking, or the ball going out of play. You may have seen a double-dribble foul called in running basketball, yet in the wheelchair version, players are allowed to push their wheels just twice while in possession. But there’s
no limit to how far they can coast between pushes. Players have different levels of disability, so there are strict rules to forbid them from using their legs to affect the chairs’ balance or movement. The full-blooded clashes have made wheelchair basketball so popular. And the charging and blocking are more challenging calls for the refs because they depend on the positions of moving chairs and their speed. It all makes for a thrilling spectacle. Tickets start at three euros a game, or you can buy a season ticket for the entire competition for just 35 euros. It will all bubble up to the grand finals on Friday, 30th June.
