Her cheeky brothers called her an Amazon and a Gladiator, so meet…
The wonders of Mayling Continued from front As a highly-sought-after personal trainer, she has travelled the world, and even competed in fitness competitions as the Arnold Classic US representing Singapore. She now combines her vast knowledge, acquired through weapons and martial-arts training, to create unforgettable characters, such as Svietta, a Russian psychopathic killer in Lady Blood, which was her last film. Mayling was born in Liverpool and grew up in Tenerife. But she left the island in 2010 and now lives wherever she lays her head (Los Angeles, Hollywood, Singapore, Bali or Thailand), explaining: “I get bored quickly.” Her father, who owned a restaurant in Liverpool, moved the family to Tenerife in the Eighties and opened The Slowboat chain here in the South. “I helped him out for a while,” said Mayling, who returned to the island this week to visit her family. “And I even had my own restaurants for a while. I like restaurants, but that lifestyle wasn’t for me. It was too much like Groundhog Day … same old thing every day!” She recalled: “My father built up the restaurant chain - five or eight, I can’t remember. But he eventually franchised them out and my brothers took over then making their own businesses even more successful. “They have done immensely well with their Venture Restaurants on the Golden Mile, in Las Americas, yet it’s a very stressful way to live. They tend to delegate more these days, and have
great country, but now I’m in LA and I love it.” Eventually, she settled in Asia, but then moved to London to become a personal trainer. She also won Barclays Bank woman’s business pitch idea with her Lyte Protein cafe ideas and opened 3 on the island to preach her healthy, macros concept but, “The customers just wanted a hamburger and beer,” she said ruefully. “Now everyone is instagram fitspo wanting a six-pack. I was too early … before my time!” For all her worldliness and supreme fitness, Mayling, who works out in the gym daily, with a combination of weights and martial arts admits she was “big” as a child: pear-shaped, shy and private as a youngster. “I was 28 when I first wore heels and a dress,” she said. “I was always a tomboy, and it wasn’t until I accepted my physique that I became more confident. “My brothers used to call me Gladiator, Amazonian and even Kick-Boxer or Strong
appointed managers. Mayling added: “I was always the one coming and going in our family. I love the island, but it can
be quite small, so I was leaving every month or so, and moved onto to Singapore, which is a
Legs. Now, though, as well as acting, it’s my job, so in a way, it’s being a strong female has made my dream of living in LA a reality” And of her current role in Wonder Woman, Mayling said: “I wasn’t a huge comicbook fan growing up. I read comics as a kid, but, as a female, there weren’t a lot of very positive or inspiring role-models in comics back then. “It wasn’t until a few years ago that I got to see how things had changed in the world of comics, and I believe the new Wonder Woman movie is very much a product of the new take on females in comics and movies. “It’s empowering, and the females are as stronglydeveloped as the males. Her latest feature a few months ago is a FMA (Filipino martial arts) US/ Asian production in the Philippines jungle, and she features as a demon fighter queen Maya in Blood Hunters. “However, I’m full of gratitude for my life. And the family, who are really, really proud of what I have achieved so far, finally ‘get it’.” Inspired by Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan “My ambition was always to be in movies, but I didn’t really have the confidence, I’ve learned the art of not caring what people think anymore”. In the comics, Orana is an Amazonian woman who fights Wonder Woman, and even defeats her in one of the issues... but in “real” world? Watch Wonder Woman to find out!

BREXIT: Brits abroad driver must be protected now Wrong-way
THE rights of 1.2 million EuropeanUnion-based Brits, along with the UK’S three million EU citizens, must be “the highest priority” in Brexit negotiations, say campaigners.
The British In Europe group has urged Brexit Secretary David Davis to protect expats currently living “in limbo” by securing a deal on existing rights. Landmark talks on Britain leaving the EU began on Monday, and negotiators from the EU have told British In Europe (a coalition which includes campaign groups in Spain), that current citizens’ rights should remain unchanged. But with Michel Barnier, the EU’s chief negotiator, saying that any deal over citizens’ rights would be wiped out without an overall Brexit deal, the fears remain high. Jane Golding, Chair of British in Europe, said: “For the past year, Theresa May has repeatedly refused to make a unilateral offer to the three million EU citizens in the UK. “She says this is to protect the rights of the 1.2 million UK citizens in Europe, but we have no detailed
information on what that might mean.” She added: “The EU offer gives plenty of detail and goes almost all the way to guaranteeing all our rights. But everything depends on how the UK decides to respond.” A spokesman for the UK Government’s Department for Exiting the European Union said its “first aim” was to secure the rights of EU citizens in the UK and UK citizens living in the EU. “We want to end the anxiety facing four million citizens,” he said. “That has always been our first aim, and that is what we will do.” Theresa May, Britain’s Prime Minister, said she would make “a very generous offer” on rights for three million EU citizens. But Sue Wilson, from campaign group Bremain In Spain, said: “We are impatient to hear exactly what Mrs May’s ‘generous offer’ for EU/UK citizens will look like. “It seems unlikely that it will even come close to the generous offer already outlined in detail by the EU. “All our discussions with the EU have been fully transparent, and it’s time the UK Government behaved the same way.”

Cancer families to be offered room service!
TEN families in Adeje, affected by cancer, will be given a free week’s holiday, courtesy of the Atlantic Holiday Centre. The Callao Salvaje Centre has donated the week-long holidays to the Spanish Cancer Association’s local branch and Adeje Council, to offer them to families who have someone suffering from cancer. The initiative was welcomed by Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo as “very positive, because those who are affected by cancer are also under a huge amount of stress during their palliative care”. She added: “They can use this week to relax, enjoy some leisure time with their family, and be looked after by hotel staff. This will contribute to their recuperation, and the staff
After their uncomplicated births, the aquarium’s team of professionals decided to keep the youngsters (Dasyatis Americana), known in the Canaries as “chucho”, in a floating tank within the big exhibition tank. This way, the new-borns cannot suffer any brusque water changes, and they are protected from the other fish living in the main tank.
Fortunately, he was caught before causing an accident. Yet he managed to drive his black, Citroën Berlingo for 25km against ongoing cars before being halted near Guamasa.
Beaches
bugged again THE El Medano beaches, which have tested positive for the E. Coli bug a second time, are closed again, even though it’s a “small contamination”, says Granadilla Councillor Marcos Gonzalez. With Candelaria beaches also shut down for the same reason, Granadilla Town Hall has instructed water company Entemanser to investigate what is causing the South beaches to be contaminated frequently.
Cockroaches plague areas in El Medano AN infestation of cockroaches has struck some public areas of El Medano, and political party Ciudadanos is concerned enough to ask Granadilla Town Hall to launch a new fumigation plan.
LORO Parque’s Aquarium has again been successful with its breeding programme, six strong and healthy stingrays being born there.
in the holiday complex will be delighted to welcome them.” Hotel director Charlotte Abildtrup said: “We want to help these people and their families relax a little, and escape from some of the stress they are experiencing as a result of their cancer. “We know they are fighters, and that they are facing difficulties on a daily basis. That’s why we want to offer the families a chance to enjoy what the hotel has to offer this summer: a week in which they can enjoy some quiet time with us.” Cllr. Trujillo Bencomo added: “This gesture from the heart by people such as Charlotte shows that there is kindness without conditions, and without barriers there are; people who only want to help.”
DURING the early hours of yesterday (Thursday), the Guardia Civil arrested a 65-year-old man for driving the wrong way on the TF5, heading to Santa Cruz from Puerto de la Cruz.
The areas affected include playgrounds and El Medano’s Plaza, as well as the surroundings areas where, says Ciudadanos spokesman Arquipo Quintero: “The cockroaches have taken over.” Quintero has also filed a complaint with the Environmental Department to make officials “aware of the residents’ complaints, and
for them to fix this plague”, which, he said, was “invading various areas in the municipality”. The spokesman also pointed out: “As the current pest-control methods used by the Town hall are not effective, new actions should be put into place to complement the Municipal Fumigation Plan.” Quintero added: “Cockroaches and other insects
can, adversely, affect the health of citizens,” and his party believes that “the lack of foresight on behalf of the local government is regrettable”. In his opinion, the Council should have acted before the cockroaches proliferated in El Medano during the summer period. “It is the children usually playing in the playground who are suffering the consequences, even though, last year, Cuidadanos warned the Council about this problem so that appropriate action could be taken,” said Quintero. “The Council must intensify fumigation treatments, increasing the doses of pesticides used in the sewers, if necessary, and carry out information campaigns for citizens.”

Cabildo bus bonus for routes in South
TENERIFE Cabildo, through bus transport service Titsa, has acquired new vehicles to improve the quality of service offered here in the South. Curiously, all 10 articulated buses have been allocated to cover Route 467, connecting Costa del Silencio and La Caleta. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso presented the new fleet, accompanied by Titsa manager Jacobo Halitosis,
along with representatives from municipalities in the South and other authorities. Alonso said the Cabildo was responding to the demand because of the need to “promote mobility through public transport”. And more drivers will be taken on after the summer so that Titsa can introduce new bus lines, as well as better frequency and schedules. The President also reminded town councils in the South to bank on public transport, as much as the Cabildo does.
That’s because the island’s government continues to work on improving the connectivity of Titsa bus routes between tourist areas, the South airport and workplaces. The new fleet adds to the 37 existing, updated Titsa buses, which began operating last May on various routes in the metropolitan area, North and South, in which the Cabildo invested 7.3 million euros. Buses are, said Alonso, more accessible, safer and more environmentallyfriendly.

How cars are stolen
ADEJE’S School of Security has hosted a course for police and other local and national security forces on the subject of stolen cars and the method of selling them. It was delivered by members of Interdocpol, an international, nonprofit organisation, based in various countries, with its headquarters in Spain, and it attracted 36 people connected with security. The group comprises international partners, and its members are made up of the security forces, judiciary staff, experts and people related to vehicle traffic, along with documentary
and expedition staff with a legitimate interest in combating crime. Its objective is to offer training and information, via courses (classroom or online) on the current and on-going smuggling of vehicles and forgery, with information being exchanged among its associated members. Three Catalonia members of the Interdocpol directed the course, and the high level of participation was indicative of the interest shown by various security bodies. As well as agents from Adeje, members of security bodies from Arona, Vizcaya, San Miguel, Granadilla, Guía de Isora, Gran Canaria, Barcelona, Granollers and Santa Cruz were also present.

we are working to ensure that an increasing number of services will be accessible online, to make things easier for private individuals and companies who have business with them.” He added that since the introduction of the Adeje app (for smartphone users), online access has increased even more,
and the public are happy to have this real-time tool at their disposal. During 2016, the OAC processed 12,600 travel certificates (30% of the total requests), 6,300 general registrations, 5,880 certificates of resident registration (“padrón”) and 2,940 family certificates, among other matters. With the new app, “Adeje en
tus manos”, people can also report issues of concern directly, the message being sent to the relevant departments. Last year, via the app, complaints (with photographs) were received regarding public-lighting, maintenance of public zones, gardens and parks, playgrounds, and traffic and road-safety issues.

Rescue centre for borough may take on volunteers ADEJE Council is to vote on regulations allowing volunteers to assist in the borough’s animal-rescue centre, following a meeting called by Health Councillor Adolfo Alonso. It was attended by Amada Trujillo Bencomo, a Council spokesperson, Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, Local Development Councillor, Oliver Tacaronte, Councillor and a member of the Coalicion Canaria party, in addition to wellknown animal-rights activist Inma Évora. Trujillo said: “We are making good the promise to allow volunteers to carry out some duties in the centre, with a series of agreed norms for their benefit, and that of the centre’s animals. “We are open to opinions and reactions, and we have taken on board a number of suggestions to strengthen the final document. “This will lead towards a better response to the needs of the centre and, thus, help the well-being of the animals there.” Those volunteering must be over 18 and registered with a legallyconstituted, volunteer organisation. There will be 10 places open, and people will be allocated their place for a set period, allowing others to take up the opportunity as well. Each volunteer granted a place will also be asked to undertake a monthlong training period, in which he/she will be trained in agreed duties and obligations, and then given full accreditation.
Sssh, it’s a noise map! MAYOR José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga this week presented the results of a study, which has led to a “Noise Map” for Costa Adeje.
It took the AAC Acústica + Lumínica specialist company one year to produce, and the results, say the Adeje Mayor, “indicate that, in general, we are meeting the quality acoustic objectives”. Rodríguez Fraga, accompanied by Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira García, said of the project: “This radiograph of the acoustic reality of the borough will be a fundamental tool in future urban planning and organising events etc.” The Costa Adeje Noise Map, as well as determining whether the acoustic levels are generally within the limits permitted by law, also focuses on two key issues. The first is the need to bring the 1994 municipal regulation into line “because it is currently obsolete and needs be adapted to meet
its noise impact in the borough”. The Noise Map shows that noise levels in some Costa Adeje areas are breaking the accepted limits, in many cases because excess traffic noise. Now, the Council will have to draw up an action plan to improve the situation in the identified zones.
Robber is pure pants! current state and European norms”. The study recommends that a new ordinance “would establish the limits and indicate clearly that the measurement of noise and decibel levels needs to be carried out in the buildings where the noise is being heard”. The conclusions it recommends is that the new municipal law would identify zones of areas designated for leisure, and where excep-
tions could be permitted; for instance, during local annual patronal festivals. At the same time, the new ordinance will include the definition of Saturated Acoustic Zones, and the preventative measures required. Councillor Moreira said: “With this information, the Council can now work to draw up the new ordinance. In parallel, we are working, via a mayoral pact, on the traffic issue, to reduce

Terrifying new total of gender-violence victims SPAIN’S genderrelated violence rose by 2.4% last year to a horrifying 28,281 officially-registered female victims, according to the country’s National Statistics Institute (INE). Tragically, for some of these women, all receiving some form of official protection, 44 were killed by their spouse, or ex-partner, as shown by the Health Ministry’s provisional figures The rise in the number of officially-recorded victims has grown for the second year, following a drop between 2012 and 2014. Nearly half the genderviolence victims (48.6%), who had been assigned legal precautionary measures by a court, were aged between 30-44, according to the latest Statistics on Gender Violence and Domestic Violence report. By age group, the biggest increase in 2016 was among women 75 and older (14.6%), followed by the 4044 age group (8.5%).
In relative terms, however, the rate of abuse is highest in the 25-29 age range, with three out of every 1,000 requiring some form of official protection. In the case of abused teens, complaints fell by 10.7%: there were 569 victims last year, compared with 637 in 2015. The most significant rise in complaints was against men aged 75 and older (12.9%). In the majority of
cases (23.3%), across all age groups, the victim and the abuser were married. There was also a 7% rise in the number of convictions, up from 24,265 to 25,959, while acquittals dropped from 6,768 to 6,288. But in seven out of 10 cases, the conviction was handed down in under a year. The most significant rise in complaints was 12.9%, against men aged 75 and older.
Under Spanish law, genderviolence consists of any physical or psychological aggression by a man against a woman with whom he has a relationship. The new survey also presents data on domestic violence, defined as aggression by either a man or a woman against a member of their own family (including children, grandparents, siblings). In 2016 there were 6,863 registered vic-
tims of this type of aggression, a 5.1% drop from the previous year. Of these victims, 62.5% were women. Domestic violence is spread more uniformly across all ages, although the under-20 group stands out, with those aged 18 to 20 particularly at risk. Although, in absolute terms, the vast majority of victims are Spanish, the rate per 1,000 inhabitants is higher among foreign nationals living in Spain. Within the family, mothers are mostly the domesticviolence victims (27.9%), followed by children (27.1%), fathers (11.2%) and siblings (9.8%). The INE statistics offer information about cases in which protection orders, or some other form of precautionary measure, were recorded with the Justice Ministry’s Central Register. According to the General Council of the Judiciary, 134,462 women reported being victims of gender-violence last year, regardless of whether their complaint led to court-appointed measures or not.
Spain beefs up security to keep its tourists safe SPAIN is planning to combat terrorism this summer, and guarantee the safety of holiday-makers and locals, by doubling its police presence in tourist areas on the mainland, and in the Canaries, to 2,639.
It is the Interior Ministry’s largest deployment since 2011, and the additional officers will work right across the country. It adds up to twice the country’s 1,227 officers,
who watched over tourists last year. Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said: “We are confident that all Spaniards and foreigners can enjoy their holidays safely, without having to worry about a good time and a rest. We want to offer more and more security to the tourist.” The AlertCops app has also been introduced, which enables holiday-makers to communicate with Spanish security forces in 100 languages, while also allowing them to send photos and videos to help them investigate a crime. Zoido said authorities

would also invite police officers from the French, Italian, Dutch and Romanian police to patrol
with the Spanish cops. He added: “We want to continue making Spain an increasingly-safe country,
and a perfect tourist destination.” But Lieutenant-General Francisco José Gan, the former Chief of Intelligence stressed: “No one is safe. I do not say that Spain is safe … I say it is better prepared because we have learned in a very traumatic way. “No one is safe, but perhaps we make it more difficult for them than others.” Spain has not had a terrorist attack since the devastating 2004 Madrid bombings, and the authorities have made 700 terror-related arrests since. Also, the holiday favourite for Brits is touted as one of the safest destinations.

That’s the threshold necessary for commercial operations once the line is inaugurated officially. It’s a high-speed railway link, costing 6.7bn euros, and built to improve journey times for travellers on the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca. The trial involved a Talgo 350 Haramain train, adapted to contend with the extreme conditions it will face, including hot desert sands. A consortium, which includes Spanish rail infrastructure manager Adif, train-builder Talgo and construction companies OHL and FCC, said it has added 30 technological components to the highspeed trains, which will link Islam’s holiest cities. The project has been plagued by delays, blamed by the consortium and Saudi authorities on one another.
The AVE trains (for Alta Velocidad Española, or Spanish High Speed) are set to start operating for private trips, and for the Saudi royal family, by the end of the year, before being opened up to the general public next March. The Al Shoula Group, comprising 12 Spanish companies and two Saudi firms, said the train “used the strictest standards of safety and quality, and employed a highlystringent trial regime”. A first trial of the socalled ‘Desert AVE’ was conducted on 18th May, and a second was carried out on 14th June. So far, around 70% of the 450km railway line has been laid down. In December 2014, the kingdom’s newly-appointed Transportation Minister, Abdullah bin Abdulrahman al-Muqbel, issued a public statement, calling on the consortium to speed up its work, or risk the contract being rescinded. But, even now, construction work at the stations of Mecca, King Abdullah Airport and Jeddah are, significantly, behind schedule.

San Juan celebration lights up the beaches
PLAYA Fañabé is preparing to celebrate the shortest night of the year, which is tonight (Friday), when San Juan is celebrated to welcome the start of summer time with bonfires and traditions. The Adeje department, under the direction of Councillor Ermitas Moreira García, and in partnership with Urb. Playa Fañabé S, the company which run this beach, is preparing the traditional bonfire and will burn a five-metre sculpture, created by Italian artist Luigi Stinga. The celebrations, which begin at 7.30pm, include performances and live music, and the bonfire will be lit after 10pm. As well as this bonfire, and with the correct authorisation (from the Coastal Department for beach bonfires), members of the public can also
build their own bonfires. If the fires are not on beaches, permission must be sought from Adeje Council. The form you need to fill in can be downloaded online from the council page, www. adeje.es and presented at the citizen’s advice office. There is no cost for this service, but you must include the area in which the fire is to be built, and include a copy of your personal documentation. The procedure is to guarantee the public’s safety, and the Council urges people to respect this rule, and take all the appropriate security measures to ensure that the evening is enjoyed by all. Adeje Council has issued a series of regulations for those planning celebratory bonfires, and the following is a summary of the recommendations, for safety’s sake: *You must have signed permission from Adeje Council for a bonfire. A named adult must make the application, and he/she will also take responsibility for the fire, its construction,
the height, etc, and that it is extinguished at the end of the evening. *Bonfires are forbidden in barrancos, protected natural zones, close to residential areas or zones deemed dangerous. The provincial coasts (Costas) department is the only body which can grant permission for beach bonfires. If you light a bonfire without permission, you are liable to fines and/or prison. And the police will be vigilant about asking for the relevant documentation. *Bonfires are also forbidden on public roads or public spaces without written permission from the body in charge of the particular zone. *Bonfires must be easily accessible by the emergency services. They must not be near trees, bushes, electrical fences or posts, cars, buildings, etc. *The fires can be lit and maintained between 9pm2am, and always away from any area that would affect residents (noise consideration, too). *Before setting the fire, clean
the surrounding area to avoid danger of it spreading out of control. If a fire is not safely set or placed, the authorities have the right to extinguish it. *Have a two-metre-wide firewall around the fire. *The firewood piles must not be higher than one metre. You may burn wood and similar materials. You must not burn materials that will release toxic or contaminated products, pressurised containers, plastic, tyres, greenhouse materials, fireworks, or any other risk-related items. *The bonfire must be looked after until it is completely extinguished, and at least two hours after embers have been glowing. *It must not be lit if there is excess wind or other meteorological conditions declared by the regional government, which would affect it (high temperatures, etc). *In the case of any form of emergency, people should call 112, or the Local Police on 922 472 706 or 922 716 508.
Gang attacks orchard boss A MAN was assaulted by gypsies in an orchard near Cabo Blanco on Sunday morning, after being accused of slapping one of their youngsters. The child who got into the orchard was caught by the property’s manager, who, allegedly, told him off and slapped him. The young lad ran off and complained to his family and friends about the incident. Later, several adults from the gypsy community went to the orchard and attacked the man, who sustained various leg injuries and a bad head wound, after being hit with a stone. He was admitted to a hospital in a critical condition. But though the Guardia Civil took charge of the investigation, which has been filed with Arona courts, no arrests have yet been made.
Hung over, but still clinging on HE’S naked, strapped to a lamp-post with cling film, and booze dripping off him … it’s just another holiday fun-day, if not for him then for his pals in central Las Americas, as they walloped him with a belt. And the behaviour of those putting on the performance suggests they’d had more than a few drinks. The video has gone viral throughout Facebook, provoking outrage among those who despise this type of behaviour in Tenerife. Others, though, wore a big smile for the rest of the day, and couldn’t wait to talk about it.

Christmas bonus is over NEWS IN BRIEF for a lottery-ticket cheat Fleet-footed thieves A WOMAN from the Spanish north-west region of Galicia, who found a winning Christmas lottery ticket and cashed it in, has been ordered by a judge to return her 320,580-euro jackpot. Hand-writing tests proved that the ticket, from 2014, had been purchased by a woman living in the same area. She had written the name “Inés” on the back of the ticket, intending to give it to a friend of that name. The accused told the court she had bought ticket No.13,437 in a lottery kiosk because she liked numbers that started or ended with 13. “I bought it eight or 10 days before the lottery was drawn,” she assured the judge. “I had already bought two other tickets, one which ended with the same numbers, but I saw this number on the counter and
I bought it, too.” The judge, unconvinced by her version of events, ruled that while there was not enough evidence to prove she had stolen the ticket, she was guilty of misappropriation of goods. She was fined, and ordered to pay legal costs. The legitimate ticketowner had bought seven consecutive numbers at the El Lor lottery kiosk in Lugo, some 60 miles southeast of the regional capital of A Coruña. She intended to share them out among family and friends, which is why she had scribbled a name in pencil on the back of each ticket. Despite the accused’s attempts to rub out the name on the back, experts were able to reconstruct the writing, and concluded that it was the same as the writing on the other six tickets. According to Article 616 of the Spanish Civil Code, anybody who finds and hands in to the authorities an item worth less than 12 euros is due a 10th of the
value, and a 20th if it is worth more than that. For example, if you find a lottery ticket that goes on to win 100,000 euros, the owner should give you 5,000. In the case above, the 320,000 euros would have been worth 16,000 to the finder. Objects, including lottery tickets, which are handed in to the authorities and are not claimed within two years, are given to the finder. Lottery tickets have been the cause of many a lost friendship, and have even led to lawsuits. In the case above, the name scribbled on the back was enough to prove the owner’s identity. But, in general, winnings go to whoever can produce the ticket. For this reason, it is always a good idea to write your ID number on the ticket or sign it. This is particularly useful if the ticket is being shared among several people. And, says financial consultant Remo Domingo, in such cases, photocopies or photos of the ticket are valid.
Three fiddlers, who played wrong notes THE tables were turned on two Girona brothers, who planned to swindle an Arab sheik into buying a forged Goya painting.
They soon discovered that they were the ones on the receiving end when the 1.7m Swiss francs they were paid were actually photocopied notes! The transaction came to light in December 2014 when Customs authorities in Avignon, France, reported that they had detained the brothers, who had entered the country from Turin with the so-called cash. From then on, Spain’s National Police uncovered details of a string of dodgy deals which had led to the pair’s arrest. But the identities of the three fiddlers have not been revealed. The astonishing affair began when the brothers tried to sell the sheik a forged painting by Goya (Retrato de don Antonio María Esquivel - Portrait of Antonio María Esquivel), for 4m euros.
THE hunt is on for two people, who broke into a butcher’s shop in the early hours of last Friday in El Sauzal and ran off after being spotted by the Guardia Civil. The incident happened just after 3am, when they helped themselves to the butcher’s cash register and other items. They then stole a Renault Express, which they crashed in Tacoronte town centre and escaped on foot after being chased by officers.
Stolen crocodile found!
A CROCODILE, which disappeared last December, has been recovered from a property in Güime, Lanzarote, by Seprona, the Guardia Civil’s nature protection unit. The croc was traced to the address, thanks to information provided by Arrecife Local Police, which allowed a judge to issue a search warrant for the property. It has, for now, been entrusted to a zoo on the island.
Youngster bashed by car
A GIRL aged 12 was seriously injured on Sunday night after being knocked down by a car on Plaza Francisco Arteaga, in Santa Cruz. Paramedics attended the child, who had various wounds, and then transferred her to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment.
Police shock petrol thieves
A COUPLE were arrested by Local Police in Santa Cruz on Monday, for forcing open fuel caps on six parked cars and stealing the petrol. A resident in the Avenida del Carmen area spotted them there and notified the cops, who surprised the duo. On arrival, the police noticed that various cars had a hose in the fuel tank going into to a five-litre cannister. The 28-year-old man, and his 18-year-old companion, neither of whom had a driving licence, were, apparently, using a car with a fake plates.
Mother’s telephone baby
The transaction happened in Turin, where a person who said he represented the sheik gave the brothers 1.7m Swiss francs. In turn, the siblings called a loan shark in Girona to give 300,000 euros to another person in the Catalan city, also claiming to represent the sheik, to pay the intermediaries’ commissions. But when the brothers travelled to a Geneva bank to deposit the money, they were told that the notes
were photocopied fakes. The brothers, who now face swindling charges, bought the painting in 2003, believing it was authentic, with a down payment of 20,000 euros. They had promised to pay 270,000 euros, but failed to deliver the rest of the money because the seller failed to come up with an authenticity certificate. But, in 2006, a Girona court ruled that the painting was a forgery, dismissing the remaining debt they held with the original seller.
A WOMAN gave birth to a girl at her Las Palmas house in Gran Canaria, with telephone help from an EmergencyServices’ doctor. The mum-to-be called the emergency number at 7.40am, and, after talking with the doctor, she was told that labour was progressing very quickly. She would, he said, have to deliver her baby, there and then, with his assistance, before the ambulance arrived. The paramedics, who appeared just after the birth, helped the woman with her final labour stage before transferring mum and daughter to the University Hospital’s maternal unit. Happily, they are both in good health and doing well.

THE Bank of Spain has boosted business hopes by raising its 2017 growth predictions by 0.3% to 3.1% because the country appears to be sustaining strong growth momentum.
It is forecast to be 2.5% in 2018 - also 0.3% higher than the forecasts published in April - and 2.2% in 2019. The Spanish Government’s forecasts for economic growth, however, stand at 2.7% for this year, which is below projections made by the majority of entities, and 2.5% in 2018. “The improved GDP growth projections are under-pinned by the better outlook for global markets, lower oil prices, and lower interest rates particularly over the short-term,” said a bank spokesman. The growth phase is predicted to be prolonged for the 2017-2019 period, based on three factors: the competitiveness profit accumulated since the beginning of the recession, lower debt in the private sector and a continuation of these favourable, financial conditions. As for the relative weight of each of the GDP components, the Government says growth

will continue in line with domestic demand, which will, obviously, keep slowing down as overseas demand continues to rise. Projections for core inflation, which excludes prices of energy and fresh food, for all three years, were maintained at 1.1%, 1.5% and 1.8%, respectively. Regarding employment, the bank predicts a 16.5% jobless rate for this year, dropping to 14.7% in 2018 and 13.2% in 2019. “Employment will continue growing at a high rate, although this rate will gradually slow in the
long term,” said the bank spokesman. After the sharp rise in consumer prices (CPI), seen at the beginning of the year, inflation (IPC) is forecast to slow down over the rest of the year, giving an annual average in the region of 2% for 2017, dropping to 1.3% in 2018 and 1.6% in 2019. Mention was also made of a number of factors, such as foreign trade, a possible increase in trade protectionism, a hypothetical tightening of global financial conditions … and the uncertainty of the Brexit process.
ADOLFO Alonso Ferrera and Isabel Fernández González, Councillors from Adeje Departments of Education and Social Well-being respectively, are delighted at the renewal of the partnership programme with CaixaBank, through its social department, “La Caixa”. And the councillors met Tenerife West Negotiations Director María del Pilar Quiroga Gutiérrez and Eva María Salazar Arrocha, the town’s main CaixaBank Director, to discuss what’s in it for the borough’s youngsters. Their collaborative project contributes to three specific programmes, including one which works to guarantee that no child is without school materials. Under this scheme, fami-
lies suffering economic difficulties can apply for help with purchasing school materials for the 2017/2018 academic course. The “Ningún niño sin bigote” programme (no child without a moustache - a milk one in this instance) invites the public to donate long-life milk, with collection points in the town’s cultural centre: Las Torres and El Galeón sports centres, as well as at the bank. And all the milk collected will be distributed via the municipal food bank. The third project, also linked to education, sees the CaixaBank working to support Adeje’s Summer University. Altogether, the bank is donating 18,000 euros to support these educational-cum/socialaid programmes.

Sharp knives are now off the menu ATTEMPTS are being made to keep potential “weapons” off the streets of Spain, following the banning by Madrid of vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons in the centre during its Easter processions.
Salamanca’s local police force has advised owners of its bars and restaurants to keep knives and forks off the tables on their terraces until customers are seated. Miguel Ángel Madruga, who manages traditional restaurant Don Mauroin Salamanca’s main square, said: “A table that is set is more attractive, of course.” “But safety comes first. The customers don’t usually mind, and it has been easy to adapt to.” Both the local Association of Catering Firms and the City Council stress that the measure, which has been well received, is not obligatory. “Bars and restaurants have gradually taken it on board, and we believe it is a sensible precaution,” said an association spokesman. When pressed about the ini-
tiative, a local police source said that, far from relating to recent terrorist attacks in London and Manchester, the measure is merely a response to the growth of the city’s al fresco establishments, “It is a historical city with a great many tourists, and the measure is more to do with common sense,” said a spokesman, who added that a steak knife in the hands of a delinquent could be a dangerous weapon. “The knife blades on the tables aren’t usually small, so
we are taking preventative measures.” A similar explanation was given after the vehicle ban in Madrid, with the authorities justifying it as nothing more than a measure to increase security during crowded events. Yet, according to surveys carried out by the Centre of Sociological Research, 2016 figures from the central government indicate that crime has generally been falling in Spain, and the perception of public insecurity dropped by six points to 3.2% be-
tween May 2010 and December last year. Meanwhile, Salamanca’s local police are keen to deny that establishments failing to act on the advice will face fines of up to 3,000 euros. “There has been no suggestion that this could happen,” said a police spokesman. “But it’s another thing entirely if they incur a penalty for a breach of the Public Safety Law.” The legislation, more commonly known as the “gag law”, came into effect in March 2015, and considers
the exhibition of dangerous objects which could endanger lives, or physically harm people, is a minor offence, as long is a serious offence is not then committed. The Spanish Catering Federation believes that the Salamanca initiative could well be adopted by the rest of the country. “If this is the case, the catering industry will always collaborate with the authorities to ensure the safety of customers and the public in general,” said a Federation spokesman.

Bare facts about men, and drones A GROUP of women, sunbathing nude on yacht’s deck in Mallorca, have complained to the Guardia Civil that they had been filmed by a drone, operated by men. The yacht was moored in Portocolom, on the east coast, and the authorities have launched an investigation into whether the men responsible had performed an illegal act. The seven women were spending a Saturday morning on the vessel, owned by one of them. And, as five of them sunbathed naked, they spotted the drone,
initially filming in the direction of the port. Soon afterwards, though, it moved “just above” the vessel, changing position constantly, with its red recording light clearly visible. The drone was moved away once the men realised they were being recorded on a cellphone. But the women reported seeing another yacht close by, on which they saw “a group of men looking at a screen and laughing”. One of the women told police: “We started to shout at them to stop recording, and we made signs at them with our arms.” She added that they “completely ignored” their gestures. The men then sailed
into port to moor their yacht, only to find that the women had followed them - and called the Guardia! Their spokeswoman told officers that when the men realised they were “furious”, and had called the authorities. They offered them money “to have dinner in a nice restaurant” in exchange for not reporting what had happened. The men claimed to have erased the recording immediately, but the women were unable to confirm it. The Guardia is now investigating whether the incident constitutes an invasion of privacy against the women, and whether the drone’s “pilot” had the necessary licence to fly the device in Spain.
Bullfighter is made to pay by opponent A SPANISH bullfighter, gored in the southwest of France by the bull he was tackling, told medics as he was being rushed to hospital: “Hurry up, I’m dying!” Those were final words of Ivan Fandino, 36, who was entertaining a crowd in Airesur-l’Adour at the weekend, when he tripped on his cape and fell to the floor. It was payback time, on behalf of these defenceless animals, when the bull gored him savagely in a splitsecond. The Basque bullfighter, from Bilbao, was
rushed to a nearby hospital after an emergency procedure at the bullring, but he was pronounced dead on
arrival. He is the second Spanish bullfighter to die in 12 months, following the demise of Victor Barrio last July.

Cats Welfare News
Think carefully Summer might be here, but it's raining kittens in Tenerife! We have in excess of 50 kittens needing loving, permanent homes, as soon as possible. If you like the idea of a new family member, it’s a decision not to take lightly, or impulsively. Owning a cat is a financial and emotional responsibility, lasting anywhere from 14-22 years, typically. Your cat will depend on you for its health, happiness, safety and well being. Renting? Check with your landlord that you are allowed pets, and consider that, even if you are, you may not be with your next landlord. Costs The reality is that there is a lifetime of expenses associated with caring for a cat; healthy food, litter, toys, a carrier and scratching post, but, most of all, veterinary fees. Preparing and cat-proofing your home Even if your cat is allowed access to outside, there are many potential hazards in the home. Put away all medicines, household cleaners etc safely out of reach. Cover any electrical cords and sockets that cats can bite and chew. Beware of house plants -
some are poisonous. Cleaning, food and water Litter trays should be cleaned daily as cats are very fussy about being clean. Fresh food and water are needed daily. Holidays Who will look after your cat when you’re on holiday? Can you afford a pet sitter or
cattery? Emigrating If you leave the island, the cost of taking your cat with you is expensive, particularly to the UK, and it's incredibly difficult to rehome cats here. If you are still looking to adopt a cat or kitten then please contact us, as we are sure to be able to help you. All adult cats and black kittens are provided with free kitten injections, microchip and neutering, as is the second kitten if you adopt two kittens of any colour. Contact us via our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com or ring or WhatsApp Maria (English) on 646629129, seven days a week 9-6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm on 671282773. All cats and kittens go on trial, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. Our shop Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10-6pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.
Scouts all fired up for the Bomberos
THE 1st Tenerife Scout Group, based in Costa del Silencio, is holding another fund-raiser at Dylan’s Bar, Los Cristianos, again for more camping equipment, and also for Adeje’s Voluntary Bomberos. It takes place next Saturday (1st July) and starts at 1pm, with fun and games for all, plus entertainment all afternoon from Oasis Fm’s DJ Dylan, as well as Ray Wilde. Group Scout Leader Steve Leisel said: “Some of the group visited the Bomberos recently and the firefighters were fantastic, showing us all around the building and their equipment, and even the room where they practise. “As a thank-you gesture, we thought we would try to raise some money to help buy their expensive equipment.”
He added: “We have just come back from camping at Camp Nauta, where Scouts, Cubs and even Beavers enjoyed a twonight adventure.” The Scout Group’s section leaders have now expanded to six adults: Steve Leisel is Group Scout Leader as well as the Scout Leader; Ray Wilde is Assistant Scout Leader; Steve’s wife, Leisel, is Cub Leader, assisted by Jacky Day, and, finally, Megan Rose Thomas is the Beaver Leader, with Ollie Bee her assistant. “We are gaining strength and are even considering opening another section (Explorer Scouts), to which the older scouts can progress.,” said Steve. “But we still have no girls, yet! The Group broke up for the summer on Tuesday and restart on 12th September.

Lions making Homes needed! a huge splash!
SAN Miguel Lions Club has celebrated the worldwide organisation’s centenary by having a big fiesta at Costa Adeje’s Water Park.
Those Lions available enjoyed a wonderful day with a group of 35 people from AMISUR, South Tenerife’s Disabled Association, which is a day-care centre in San Miguel. The management (Manuel) and staff were really helpful and made the day go smoothly. Food was laid on and soon disappeared … only to be replaced! June marks the Lions’ Centennial Year, and clubs worldwide are celebrating in different ways, most of them trying to give their time and efforts to the local communities. It is a proud time for San Miguel President Susan to hold that position during this momentous occasion.
As a thank-you to the Lions, AMISUR invited our club members to their Canarian Day celebrations, and it was wonderful to be with the locals again, celebrating their day with food, wine, music and dancing. This followed soon after our annual Disadvantaged Children’s Holiday Project in May, which saw several groups from Britain make up a 40-strong group with carers. As ever, it was a fabulous success, and we have received many thank-you cards and letters from the groups. Everyone enjoyed our outings to the Monkey Park, Water Park and Loro Parque. To see those kids’ faces reminds us why we put the work in, all-year-round, to make these holidays happen. We will have a new President for the next Lions year, when Carole takes over from Susan for the next 12 months, from 1st July (next Saturday). If you would like to come along to
celebrate President’s Night with us, at the Chicken Shack, Costa del Silencio, the tickets (20 euros) are available from our Charity Shop in The Dip, Costa del Silencio. A sumptuous, three-course meal follows the 7pm drinks and canopies, and we then have a wonderful night of entertainment, featuring Janie Jay and our very own Dave G Tracey. Special guests will be The Retro Rockets. So get yourself dressed up and come along and enjoy a splendid night, for just 20 euros. If anyone is interested in joining San Miguel Lions Club, which has various activities, whether as a member or simply to offer your help, contact Secretary Ralph on our Facebook page, or via a PM. You can also call into our Charity Shop, which is open five days a week, Monday to Friday (10am-2pm), and speak with any Lion. Ralph is there on Mondays.

GBP kept on its toes
By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks. The UK general election certainly didn’t go the way PM Theresa May expected when she called for it, back in April, and all the uncertainty it created hasn’t been great news for the pound. In the last couple of weeks, GBP/EUR has fallen from 1.1552 euros to a low of 1.1282, while EUR/GBP has fluctuated between £0.8722 and £0.8842. During the initial buildup to the UK general election, it looked like the Conservatives were going to win by a landslide. An improved majority for
Theresa May was expected to strengthen her hand during Brexit negotiations, so, when Labour started to chase the Conservatives down in the polls, the pound came under pressure. As it happened, the Conservatives lost their majority, and were left scrabbling to make a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), in order to form a minority government. The news left the pound reeling, and the currency fell to an over-seven-month low against the euro. The GBP/EUR exchange
rate held losses, despite more hints from the European Central Bank (ECB) that it currently has no plans to adjust monetary policy. Talks between the DUP and the Conservatives also took much longer than expected to progress, with a deal failing to be formed in time for the Queen’s Speech on 21st June. With Brexit negotiations now underway, the political situation tenuous, and many unsure whether a hard or soft Brexit will be pursued, the pound remains exposed
to downside risks, and the GBP/EUR exchange rate could have further to fall. We might have had our fill of politics, but it’s likely to remain the driving force behind pound exchangerate movement in the weeks ahead. If the initial stages of Brexit negotiations appear to be progressing positively, the pound could benefit. However, signs that the UK government will struggle to secure the deal it was hoping for would be negative for GBP exchange rates. Anyone with an interest
in the GBP/EUR or EUR/ GBP exchange rate should also look out for German IFO business confidence data, German retail sales, inflation and unemployment numbers, the Eurozone’s inflation report and the UK’s final, first-quarter GDP number. Slowing inflation in the Eurozone, or its largest economy, would keep the odds of the ECB making changes to monetary policy depressed, and could pressure the euro lower. Meanwhile, a positive (or negative) revision to the UK’s growth stats may prove the catalyst for pound fluctuations. When parents are scapegoats By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
ARTICLE 1902 of Spanish Civil Code establishes the obligation for parents to respond and repair the damage caused when, by action or omission, damage is caused to another.
In addition, article 1903 of the same Code adds that this obligation arises not only for their own acts or omissions, but also for those under their care. The parents are responsible for the damages caused by children under their care, and are the guardians for damages caused by the minors under their authority, who live with them. This means that parents
are responsible, and it’s their own fault when failing to supervise their minor children. But, this responsibility ceases if they can prove that the diligence of a “good parent” was used to prevent any harm. According to the case-law, in order to determine whether or not the parents are liable before third parties for acts committed by their children, it is necessary to establish a “breach” of the duty to supervise, an omission “in custody” or “in monitoring”. It starts from a presumption of concurrent guilt in whoever performs the powers and duties, which are part of parental authority, so that it can be configured as a liability for risk or “near objective”, with the consequent reversal of the burden of proof. This means that it is the responsibility of the defendants, on whom the procedural burden weighs, to justify the reality of the case referred to in Article 1903 of the Civil Code. The jurisprudence has many examples of parents condemned to pay indemnity for damages caused by their children.
The High Court of Pontevedra revoked the judgement ruled by the Court, and, jointly, ordered several parents to pay compensation of 157,000 euros for injuries suffered by a motorcycle driver, who had been struck by a ball that children were playing with. This happened in a parking area in the evening. The High Court considered that even if the specific action of the child who kicked the ball caused the accident, the rest of defendants should also be held responsible. In cases like this, in which the harmful result is a consequence of several contributions, it is not feasible to individualise the
contribution of each. It was considered that the parents did not take the measures normally required to avoid the result. The Supreme Court condemned parents for the irreversible eye injury suffered by a 16-year-old girl, who was sitting on a park bench in a public garden. She was hit hard in the face by a leather ball, kicked by a 17-year-old boy who was playing football nearby with some friends. The court understood that although the game is not susceptible to generate a special risk, nor is it so innocuous when given special circumstances: in this case, a leather ball was driven with great force
at a person not playing. There was a possibility of damaging third parties, which actually happened. The sentence ordered the parents of the responsible minor to pay 60,000 euros by way of compensation. In another judgement, ruled by a Barcelona Court, the parents were relieved of their responsibility. A 14-yearold boy was at the exit of the park, talking with his friends and carrying a ball. It slipped from his hands and went on to the road, without excessive force, hitting a motorcyclist. There are many cases like these, so it would take an extensive column to list them all! The most important thing to bear in mind is that the responsibility of the parents for the damages caused by the children (with exceptions) is not a trivial matter, especially when they have to prove they acted with the “diligence of a good parent”. Tuesday 27th June, BBC2, 21.00 Extraordinary medical advances are transforming lives, but some patients are at the very frontiers of what’s possible - and affordable - for the NHS. With an estimated deficit of £850 million across England’s hospitals alone and a big expansion of new treatment options, the NHS faces ethical and financial challenges in treating patients who want expensive or unproven drugs to prolong their lives. Fifty one year-old Glendon from Preston has Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain tumour. Since being diagnosed 14 months ago, he has spent 10 hours a day Googling his condition in the hope of living longer. Glendon has identified an immunotherapy drug, the effectiveness of which is not yet fully proven for his type of cancer and so is not licensed and available on the NHS. Undeterred, Glendon wants to selffund a course of the drug and comes to Charing Cross Hospital’s private wing to see Oncologist Dr Matt Williams. The drug Glendon wants costs up to £30,000 per round. “I feel like I’m being asset-stripped for a cancer that isn’t my fault”, he says. At Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital, 44 year-old Nicky from Devon has travelled to receive NHS treatment not available at her local hospital. Nicky has ovarian cancer, which has spread.
Live TV coverage continues from the second day of the renowned music festival direct from Worthy Farm in Somerset. Foo Fighters will be headlining the Pyramid Stage in their first performance at the festival since 1998 after they had to cancel their 2015 appearance when front man Dave Grohl broke his leg. Also featured are highlights of the some of the most talked-about performances from earlier today. The presenting team will include Jo Whiley, Lauren Laverne, Mark Radcliffe, Nick Grimshaw, Clara Amfo and Huw Stephens

The Loch
Sunday 25th June, ITV1, 21.00
The police hold an appeal about the missing person and anxiety is exacerbated by the fact that person suffers from bipolar disorder and has neglected his medication. DCI Smilie insists his disappearance is not linked to the murder of Niall Swift and dismisses rumours regarding the discovery of a human heart. Blake Albrighton however hijacks the press conference throwing it into chaos by stating the heart and murder of Niall Swift are connected and that they should be looking for a serial killer. Smilie is enraged. In the investigation, the police are straddling two horses. Alongside the murder case, they have to investigate the disappearance. Annie and Quigley interview Dr Marr. It’s clear he has something to hide. Meanwhile, forensics conclude the same bag must have been used to transport the heart and the sliver of Swift’s brain, ergo the same person is connected to both body parts, Albrighton was right, they are dealing with a serial killer. After some persuading from Kieran, Evie shows her mum the text from Jonjo regarding Dr Marr and tells Annie about being run off the road the previous evening. A determined Evie later takes matters into her own hands and her suspicions around Marr escalate and she’s not going to let anything go. The police organise a town meeting. The purpose is dual: to inform the townsfolk about the investigation, but everyone who comes in has to fill in a form. The police hope to get a match for the handwriting on the newspaper. The plan works and they find a match. As the person is lead away an unexpected discovery outside the village hall brings the episode to a shocking close

Sudan: The Last Of The Rhinos Wednesday 28 June, BBC2, 21.00
Sudan: The Last Of The Rhinos tells the remarkable story of Sudan, a 43 year-old Northern White Rhino and the very last male of his kind on the planet. Forty years ago, Sudan was snatched from his homeland in Central Africa by animal catchers working for safari parks. While Sudan was living as an exhibit in a zoo, the rest of his species were annihilated by aggressive poaching in the wild and a failure to breed in captivity. Today, Sudan is kept under 24-hour armed guard in Kenya alongside the two remaining females, and has become an unwitting celebrity and the focus of a desperate 11th hour battle to save this sub-species now teetering on the brink of extinction. Rowan Deacon’s film tells this astonishing modern day fable through the international cast of characters who’ve been involved in Sudan’s life, including retired animal catchers, zoo keepers and conservationists who tried and ultimately failed to preserve the tiny stronghold of Northern Whites Rhinos left living in the wild. When Sudan dies a subspecies that has walked the earth for five million years will die with him. Faced with this impending tragedy, a team of scientists have hatched a rescue plan for Sudan. The film follows the teams’ desperate 11th hour efforts to use cutting-edge animal fertility treatment to breed a new generation of Northern Whites Rhinos. Combining testimony-led back story with rare and unseen archive of these near-extinct animal, Sudan: The Last Of The Rhinos is a timely exploration of whether humans have the power to bring back to life that which we have destroyed.
Growing Up With Cancer
Monday 26th June, BBC1, 19.30
The lives of three young cancer patients come under the spotlight in this moving documentary as they’re treated at one the UK’s largest specialist centres for teenagers with the disease. Part of BBC One’s Our Lives series, Growing Up With Cancer looks at the Teenage Cancer Trust Unit in Glasgow’s Royal Hospital for Children where young people find a retreat at one of the most difficult times of their lives. While the medical care given is comparable to other hospitals, the unit differs in that it offers special spaces for teen patients to chill out, listen to music or just play video games or watch a movie with other teenagers who have cancer. It’s a place to let teenagers be teenagers in the hope it will help them deal with the devastating effects of cancer and chemotherapy. “It’s a great place to hang out,” says 15-year-old Natasha. “We can relate to each other and we know each other’s stories. We can meet other teenagers with cancer who understand what it’s like.” Diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a type of blood cancer, Natasha comes to the unit five times a week for chemotherapy. She dreams of one day being a lawyer. “You’ve got to deal with it and that’s it,” she says. “After this I’d never take health for granted. When I get married and have kids that’ll be my main priority - my health, because anything could happen at any point. I’ll just focus on my health and my education now, that’s it.” Also facing treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma is 14-year-old Nairn who allows cameras to film him and his parents as he gets his diagnosis from Consultant Haematologist Dr Nick Heaney. Nairn is worried about falling behind with his school work but most of all he’s concerned for his family. He says: “I don’t want my mum and dad to be worried. A smile on my face just helps them cope with it a bit better. Obviously, being a teenager you’re going to get grumpy sometimes, so I’ve tried to maintain a good behaviour with them and it’s worked, but it’s difficult. I need to keep that smile on though because I know it’s helping them through it.” Declan, 14, has been in the unit the longest. He needs a stem cell transplant after a relapse of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia, but first must face over a month in isolation while his immune system is shut down in preparation. It’s a tough period for the youngster, but looks like it will all be worthwhile as he prepares to go home after 20 weeks spent in hospital.

Watchdog Live
Wednesday 28th June, BBC1, 20.00
Watchdog Live is back for a new series - live on BBC One from its new home in Salford. While the look and location have changed, its mission to hold the big names to account hasn’t, and the new run of investigations will cover a broader range of consumer topics than ever before. Matt Allwright, Steph McGovern and Nikki Fox all return to ensure viewers aren’t being given a raw deal, and - as ever - the mix of topical stories and reports they’ll tackle have been prompted by the experiences of viewers who’ve written to the team for help. Viewers will play a greater role in the new episodes, which, with the series once again being live, will have an increased emphasis on subjects that are making news, or which affect us all. Tests and undercover filming will expose the companies getting things wrong or letting customers down, there’ll be plenty of unmissable advice, and well-known guest reporters will tackle issues that have particular relevance to them. More ‘Rogue Traders’ will be caught on camera, and this segment of the programme kicks off by exposing the genuinely jaw-dropping methods used by one company to win business. Watchdog Live begins on BBC One at 8pm on Wednesday 28 June.

New homes on offer to blaze-hit families FAMILIES who lost their homes in Kensington’s Grenfell Tower blaze will be rehoused, permanently, in 68 brandnew flats at a luxury complex, where the cheapest one costs £1.8m. Residents who escaped the blaze are expected to take up permanent residence in the next two months, when the apartments, in the same borough, have been “fasttracked” to completion. The Kensington Row development, in Warwick Road, is just 1.5 miles south of Grenfell, in which last Wednesday’s blaze left at
least 79 people dead, or missing and presumed dead. These homes are located within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, but they are at the moreaffluent, southern end of the borough. The properties are a mixture of one, two and three-bedroom flats, and will provide “longer-term accommodation” to the 250 residents now living in hotels around the area. Two-bedroom properties within the “posh” complex are on sale for up to £2.4m, but it is understood that the City of London Corporation paid around £10m for the flats, thanks, to an “extraordinary gesture” of goodwill by developer St Edward, which is selling the properties at cost price.
Obsessed ex-con deported, to his Germany home
A STALKER, who was obsessed with celebrities, and served eight years in a Spanish prison for attempted murder, has been deported to his home country of Germany. Arndt Meyer was placed on a flight, right after his release from Estremera penitentiary, in the Madrid region. That is where he served his time for trying to kill a young actress named Sara Casasnovas with a crossbow in June 2009. Meyer had originally been given 30 days of free time before he had to leave Spain legally. But authorities rescinded the decision following revelations that he had compiled a scrapbook filled with photographs of young actresses, who could become his next targets. Prison authorities had also warned that Meyer was “potentially dangerous”, and that the actresses in his scrapbook could be at risk if Meyer were to walk free.
Investigators are trying to determine how Meyer, while behind bars, got hold of the photographs for his scrapbook Two weeks ago, government officials in Madrid agreed to have Meyer removed “immediately”, at the state’s expense. And on Monday, Spanish authorities delivered the 48-year-old, who suffers from a personality disorder, to the German police. Interpol will keep tabs on his whereabouts, and his name will be included on a register of sex offenders, said Casasnovas’ lawyer, Carlos Castresana, a former member of the Anti-Corruption Attorney’s Office. After prison workers at Estremera’s Module 5 discovered the sinister scrapbook last October, the prisoner said a worker at a religious non-profit mission, with alleged ties to the German embassy in Spain, had passed him the material. The organisation has denied this link. In 2016, Meyer received three envelopes from this alleged volunteer. The last one arrived a month before his cell was
searched. Following the finding, a court cut off all communication between both men. The photographs had handwritten captions expressing love for the actresses. “This body and skin are exactly my type!” read one. And other said: “In an ideal world, a girl like this would be the type of woman I would make sweet love to and have children with. I would marry her.” Meyer’s secret scrapbook was discovered while prison workers searched for a cellphone, which is not allowed in jail. Prison authorities suspected that the inmate was still harassing Sara Casasnovas over the telephone. The actress had reported night calls to her private number in 2015 and 2016, as well as the existence of a Facebook page with 80 images of herself as she appeared in a scene from a play: bound and gagged. Following his conviction, Meyer was barred from contacting Casasnovas or coming near her until January 29, 2020.
A property source said: “It is a huge gesture by the company, and it just goes to show what kind of mark-up there is.” The City of London Corporation purchased all the development’s available flats, which will become part of its social housing stock, in a deal brokered by the Homes and Communities Agency on behalf of the Government. Its chairman, Sir Edward Lister, said: “We are identifying suitable properties in the local area to rehouse residents as quickly as possible, as well as offering support to local authorities to run checks on any high-rise buildings. “We will do everything in our power to help those whose lives have been blighted by this horrendous fire, and reassure those who live in similar buildings that their homes are safe.” The complex, in one of the most sought-after postcodes in London, features a gym, swimming pool and 24-hour concierge service, although access to the services will not be made available to Grenfell residents. But reactions to the survivors’ upmarket accommodation were mixed. Many residents were relieved to hear that they would, finally, be receiving some good news, while others were less compassionate. Anna, who is in her sixties, has lived in her nearby flat for 40 years. And she will not be happy to see the Grenfell residents rehoused in her area. “North Kensington is not this Kensington,” she said defiantly. “They should be in a place where they are happy, but not here. I don’t want them here. “In the circumstances, they can’t all expect to be rehoused in these parts of London. Someone has to pay that money, and, if they can afford to pay the rent there, they should pay rent somewhere else.” But her friend Margaret, who also lives in the area, disagreed, asking her: “Where are they going to go? They can’t stay on the streets.” One mother-of-two, who did not want to be named, said she was disgusted by her neighbours’ reaction. “They are saying, ‘Have you
heard about how they are letting these people who don’t work live in luxury apartments’?” she said. “They are saying that they don’t want these people here in their apartments, and that they rely too much on the government. They are saying, ‘I pay £5,000 a month to live here’.” She added: “I just thought, ‘Oh my God. Haven’t these people suffered enough’?” The move follows calls by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for luxury homes in the borough to be requisitioned. He said last week: “Kensington is a tale of two cities. The south part of Kensington is incredibly wealthy … it’s the wealthiest part of the whole country. “The ward where this fire took place is, I think, the poorest ward in the whole country, and properties must be found, requisitioned, if necessary, to make sure those residents get rehoused locally.” Communities Secretary Sajid Javid, said: “The residents of Grenfell Tower have been through some of the most harrowing and traumatic experiences imaginable, and it is our duty to support them. “Our priority is to get all those who lost their homes rehoused locally as soon as possible, and permanently, so that they can begin to rebuild their lives. “The government will continue to do everything we can, as fast as we can, to support those affected by this terrible tragedy.” Grenfell Tower renovations were inspected 16 times over the two years, during which period, apparently, flammable cladding was added to the building, it has been reported. Building inspectors working for Kensington and Chelsea council (RBKC) carried out the checks, the first on 29th August 2014 and the last on 7th July 2016, after which a completion certificate for the renovation was issued, according to The Guardian newspaper. Rydon Construction, which performed the renovation, said shortly after the blaze that the materials used “met all required building control, fire regulation and health and safety standards”.

How to deal with
Here comes the sun
By Charlotte
By Carl pattison from Robot
I USUALLY write about hair damage from the sun after the summer is over, advising you how to repair your precious locks. This year, prevention is the cure, so read on and help your hair to survive the heat. Covering up is the best solution, but we all wander out in the sun without being protected by a hat or scarf. The best way is to smear pulledback, damp hair with a moisturising masque, for moderate protection. Never
post-traumatic stress
from CET
swim and let your hair dry in the sun; the chlorine or salt will dry up your hair after just one session. Rinse, or, better still, wash immediately, to prevent damaging your hair. Leave in your conditioner for 5-10 minutes, or apply a reconstructive masque. You should be applying leavein oil to nourish your hair, and other products that will
put back what you’re taking out, as you soak up the rays. The sun we see here in Tenerife strips out the colour from everything that’s left in it, so imagine what it’s doing to your hair. Take heed and act now, so you’re not regretting not doing so at the end of the summer. Nourish, moisturise and protect are your key words.
Hey, party pants By Carl Pattison
WE are in the height of summer, shorts are out and there’s more of you on show than normal. So, go against the flow and hook onto one of summer’s hot looks, and that’s the allnew trousers. Don’t think that they’re only for the cooler times of year. From loose to skinnycut, trousers are big this summer, and come in so many various styles and prints. As predicted here, earlier this year,
stripes are big on style, as are Seventies floral and abstract prints. Look out for flowing materials such as silks and cottons, shiny effects and bo-ho chic; it’s your take on this fashion, so it’s your choice. If you’re matching in shoes, opt for heels and mules; stay away from flats, as, with trousers, you need to elongate, not shorten, yourself. Your trousers can take you from work to nights out; dress them up or go casual with them. How you wear them is up to you, but don’t be left out. Grab yourself a pair!
FOLLOWING my recent article regarding PTSD, I was sent this email: Hi Charlotte, Thank you for your article. I have a daughter who suffers from anxiety attacks which the doctor has diagnosed as PTSD, because of her father (my husband) dying suddenly. We moved to Spain a couple of years ago to start again, and try to move on. She is now 16, and started suffering with panic attacks about six months ago. I don’t know what to do, and she refuses to see anyone about it, saying that therapy won’t help. What can I do? My reply: Thank you for your email. I appreciate the situation you are in, and, whilst she refuses to accept help, life can be tricky for you, too. If you feel that you also need support,
that is normal, and something you might also want to look into. I can discuss with you if necessary. Certainly, you are not alone, and there are some things which you can do to support her, and suggest to her. You might start by mentioning some breathing techniques which she can practise at least three times a day; more will certainly not harm. Fix your vision on something solid, such as a mark on the wall, a picture etc. Next, notice the in-breath going through your nose, and, at the same time, count to four. As you breathe in and reach the count of four, hold the breath for six seconds (“One second, two seconds, three seconds” etc). Next, focus on the out-breath; watch the air exit your nose, and count to eight in the same way. Repeat this at least five times during the day, and periods when there is no anxiety. When there is anxiety, repeat until it has subsided. I appreciate that, sometimes, the
anxiety can come all of a sudden, and, once we are into a deep experience of panic, it can be impossible to focus. This is the exact reason one needs to practise at times when there is no stress. Once the mind is trained to start the breathing technique automatically, then it will become easier to recognise when the anxiety is starting, and to prevent it. Should an attack start, it is easier to shorten the episode and regain control. Other advice is to write things down. She does not need to show you what she has written, but, if she can start a journal and write down her emotions, such as “I am shaking and sweating; I feel nauseous; I have an empty feeling in my stomach; I feel lonely, abandoned, and angry” etc, this will help her to accept them, rather than fight them. It also helps to break the circular thinking, and the mind has more space to move forward rather than stay stuck in the same cycle. Finally, I advise a personalised recording. If she is not ready to speak to someone face-toface, then I can create a personal recording especially for her needs, and she can listen to it at her own leisure, and as much as she requires. Some cherry good benefits
By Val Sainsbury SWEET or sour, cherries are bursting with nutrition, and can help improve your health in the following ways: Get a better night’s sleep Tart cherries are one of nature’s few sources of melatonin, a hormone that lowers body temperature, making us sleepy. Even better: sipping the tart concentrate may provide an alternative to a melatonin supplement. Balance your blood pressure Sweet cherries are loaded with potassium, a natural blood-pressure reducer. Potassium balances fluids
in our bodies, essentially offsetting the bloodpressure-raising effects of sodium. Studies have found that people who eat more potassium-rich foods, like sweet cherries, tend to have less hypertension. One cup packs roughly the same amount of potassium as a small banana, and also boasts some quercetin, an antioxidant that may help keep blood vessels relaxed and supple. Ease muscle soreness Tart cherry juice may reduce post-workout pain. Researchers believe that tart cherries’ antioxidants protect against attacks by exercise-induced free radicals, which can lead to painful inflammation. Combat cancer Sweet cherries are rich in beta carotene, vitamin C, anthocyanins and quercetin, which may work together to fight cancer. Plus, preliminary studies suggest the anthocyanin
cyanidin may prevent genetic mutations that can lead to cancer, and keep cancer cells from growing out of control. While tart cherries contain some anthocyanins, sweet cherries pack nearly three times as many (two-thirds are found in the skins). The riper the better: as cherries darken, they produce more antioxidants. Whittle your waistline When scientists at the University of Michigan Health System put rats on a high-fat diet, supplemented with either a tart-cherry powder (equal to 1% of the weight of their total diet) or the same number of calories from carbohydrate, those that were fed the cherry powder gained less weight and body fat. Why? The anthocyanins in tart cherries activate a molecule that helps rev up fat burning, and decrease fat storage.

Storage Wars! WHEN you buy a property abroad, it will generally be much smaller than your principal home.
Many of the properties built in places such as Tenerife are intended for holidays, so there are certain aspects of the design that may not be ideal if you are staying there long-term, or even permanently. The minimalist look (where furniture is sparse with nothing on show) is all very well, but where do you put all your belongings? Try to consider every possible area that could be used for storage, without giving your home a cluttered look. In all properties, there are some areas that are under-utilised. For example, consider getting corner and coffee tables that have storage inside, and out of sight. One hugely-underused space is the bed. Consider buying a storage bed where the upper part can be lifted up on hydraulics, with the mattress and bedding all still in place. This provides a huge amount of clean, dry space for shoes, clothes and bedding – or, indeed, anything! If your bedroom is small, go for a base with rounded corners. If you have a small hallway in your property, you might think about getting a “zapatero”, a slim cupboard that stores multiple pairs of shoes on a rack, hidden away from view. This is something that
is very popular in Spain. The top of the enclosed cupboard might be the perfect place for your internet hub, a mirror or decorative object, or just somewhere to leave your keys when you come in. Extra wardrobes are, of course, also a possibility if you have the space, and they
are available in a huge range of sizes, colours and shapes to fit every small nook and cranny. Use hooks inside the doors to store belts and scarves, and boxes to store bits and pieces on the top shelf that you don’t need on a regular basis. On the terrace, you can use weatherproof
cupboards or benches, where cushions and barbeque stuff can be stored safely and out of sight. For more storage ideas, including all those mentioned, contact Deco Nuevo on 922 789729, who will be pleased to help you, and come up with some fresh storage ideas.

Buying a home in Tenerife
THERE were tearful scenes in San Isidro this week as people, squatting in 41 apartments, were evicted by a 50-strong team of Guardia Civil officers, following a court order.
By Sonya Hinley from Tenerife Island rentals
I HAVE been asked by a tenant, who has been renting for a few years and feels it is time to settle, what the next stage is when buying a house in Tenerife. Once you have chosen the property you wish to purchase, the first stage is to sign the Reservation Contract (Contrato de Compraventa). This simply states the terms and conditions, and includes the property address, full details of the buyer and vendor, purchase price, date to sign the private purchase contract at the notary, and deposit details. It is strongly recommended that you choose a lawyer who specialises in Spanish land law, but it is not mandatory. Using a lawyer can remove some of the headaches associated with Spanish Law, when purchasing
Squatters evicted from 41 apartments in San Isidro
your home abroad. A 10% deposit is required to secure the property while your lawyer conducts the due diligence; this is fully refunded in the event of your lawyer discovering any legal anomaly to the said property. Should you decide not to go ahead with the purchase, you will lose the full amount of the deposit paid. However, if the seller decides not to proceed, you are refunded the full amount of your deposit, in duplicate. When the lawyer has completed the due diligence, and you are happy to proceed, then the deposit will go towards the purchase price. The private-purchase
agreement, escritura, will be prepared and signed. This is a legal document and will contain the full details, size and address of the property, referencia catastral number (legal registration number of the property), and details of the buyer and vendor. It is signed in front of a notary. A number of taxes, and notary and legal fees are charged when purchasing a property. The cost varies, but they are approximately 10% of the purchase price. If you need any advice I would be more than happy to help, as would our team. If you are interested in buying or selling property, please do not hesitate to come and see us.
The La Jurada building is now owned by a bank because the developer went into arrears, and the families squatting departed without incident. Some moved out their own furniture and appliances, while local residents were concerned about the huge squad of Guardia officers. “It was frightening seeing so many Guardia Civil officers because we thought they were looking for terrorists,” said one. “All kinds of people lived in the building, including Africans, Colombians and also Canarians.” She was speaking from behind a security perimeter established by the Guardia, and another witness said the build-
ing had been occupied by squatters for “two or three years, and at least three people have died from overdoses”. He added: “It is shameful that the building is in such a state because it was new.” Another local said there were a lot of unfinished buildings in San Isidro with squatters, and he called for more council properties to be built. Local Police sources in Granadilla said that there were “at least” five San Isidro properties still occupied by families who face eviction. Granadilla Security Councillor Jacobo Perez confirmed that two minors and two elderly people were living in the building, and “a few other families”, without recourse. He said the Town Council would accommodate them in a hotel during the next few days, while seeking a solution with the Cabildo and the Canarian Government, so that those affected could be given permanent accommodation.

Cup hopes melt away (Queen’s Cup, semi-final)
TENERIFE are bound to relive the first half in their worst nightmares because Atletico were simply too hot to handle during that period, on a scorching evening in Madrid.
Their two goals, acquired in the first half, turned out to be the final score, despite a spirited second-half performance by Tenerife in the Copa de la Reina (Queen’s Cup) semi-final. Atletico exposed Tenerife down the wings, with Borja and Sampedro using their pace to carve out chances. Ten minutes into the game, a cross-field ball from Atletico found Borja on the goal-line. Noelia Gil should have smothered the ball, but Borja got past her and tapped in an easy opener. The torment continued
Atletico Madrid 2 Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 0
with Tenerife pinned back for most of the half. Madrid were eager to shoot from any distance, and Noelia did well to see off a curling shot
Brits at the double
that dipped awkwardly. There was a second cruel blow just before the halfhour. A lobbed ball into the penalty area evaded Noelia and went past off the body of defender Estella for an own-goal. Then Soni spotted an opening in the Tenerife defence, but Noelia stopped the threat with a great diving save.
The half-time break came as a relief, but it was still 34º late into the evening and Tenerife needed to shuffle the pack and bring on fresh legs. Maria Marti came on for Cindy Garcia, and Virgy for Silvia Poblado, tightening up the Tenerife defence considerably, and Noelia made another timely save, this time at the feet of a Madrid attacker. Jackie Simpson put the brakes on Sampedro as
she shaped to add a third goal, and, with Borja going off, Madrid lost their main threat. Patri Gavira, challenging home keeper Lola for a high ball, came out of the clash with a head injury. Tenerife coach Toni Ayala was furious that no foul was called, and his loud complaints saw him banished from the bench to the stand. There were a couple of late attempts by Pisco from corners, but the hosts kept their clean sheet and took the victory. But their jubilation was short-lived because Barcelona won the cup by beating Atletico 4-1 in the grand final. Meanwhile, team-building is gathering pace for next season’s league campaign. Tenerife have just added Canadian Jordyn Listro to the squad. The Canadian has been playing for Florida University and follows in the footsteps of Jackie Simpson, also a Florida student, who was welcomed to the squad in the last pre-season.
Basketball
Coach Txus changes courts TXUS Vidorreta has WHEREVER the pitch and whatever the time, you can’t keep the Brits from their love of football. So top marks to Atlantic Horizons, who have become the first British team to complete a League and Cup double in the local Tenerife Liga Serie B. The team, managed by Steve Lovelady-Wakenshaw, clinched the 17-team division last Friday, and added the cup on Monday with a 3-0 win over rivals Aston Birras, who are second in the league. The season is not quite over, but Atlantic Horizons can’t be caught. It’s a labour of love for the nomadic players, who compete as far apart as Vilaflor, El Fraile, Las Zocas, and Fañabe, often playing late-night games because of pitch availability. The league title brings them promotion to Liga Serie A, and a chance to make more footballing friends, as well as keeping fit and having loads of fun.
Big-match tragedy
A PENSIONER died, tragically, on Wednesday evening, after suffering a heart attack during the first leg of CD Tenerife’s promotion play-off semi-final against Getafe at the Heliodoro stadium, in Santa Cruz. Paramedics attended to the 74-year-old season-ticketholder outside the stadium before taking him the University Hospital, where, sadly, he passed away.
presided over Iberostar Tenerife’s record-breaking season, highlighted by winning the inaugural European Champions League.
But success brings its own problems, as the La Laguna-based team have discovered, because envious eyes noticed the influence of the coach. To Tenerife’s dismay, Liga Endesa champions Valencia have tempted Txus over to their court for next season. A clause in the Bilbaoborn coach´s contract to 2018 with Tenerife allowed him to talk with any teams interested in securing his services. There were tears at the press conference when Txus announced his departure, as he spoke of his pride in the Tenerife players and all they achieved last season. The 51-year-old has made a steady climb up the
Spanish leagues. He had three seasons at La Palma from 1999 and went on to greater success at Bilbao, and Alicante, before joining Tenerife in 2015. But a new coach has
swiftly been installed at La Laguna’s Pabellon Santiago Martin. Bosnia-born Nenad Markovic is well-travelled as a player and coach, with spells in Bosnia, Greece, and Poland.

US Open Golf GOLFER Brooks Koepka has put his US Open golf success at Erin Hills down to playing and winning on Europe’s Challenge Tour … including a recordbreaking 10-stroke triumph in the Canaries!
The 27-year-old, from Florida, produced a backnine birdie blitz last Sunday to shoot a closing-round 67 on the Wisconsin course, blasting his way to a fourshot victory. It matched Rory McIlroy’s 16-under-par, record triumph six years ago, and Koepka relived fond memories of his time in Europe, where he won in La Gomera, Italy, Scotland and Turkey. He believes it was good preparation for him in the build-up to becoming the seventh, consecutive, firsttime Major champion. “Playing the Challenge Tour was really, really cool,” he said. “Competing in Europe helped me grow up a bit, and figure out that I could really take my game somewhere.” He added: “Winning three Challenge Tour events, and also winning the Turkish Airlines Open, meant I built a lot of confidence. “I’d love to get a map and look at all the places I’ve won, but to win my first Major in the United States is pretty special.” Koepka’s big break came in September 2012 on the European Tour’s secondary Challenge Tour, when, just three months after turning pro, he won in Spain. Nauta Camp Site. That ensures the trophy will be finding its way to San Blas later in the season. Congratulations to all who organised, hosted, played and contributed to an excellent evening’s entertainment, at all three venues. Back to league business,
and, in Division 1, Gaffers travelled to Boothen Bar, where the encounter ended 4-4, Gaffers taking the trebles to deny the hosts. The home side’s Steve took out a 180, and the scoreline leaves both teams unbeaten this season.
La Gomera lift for US champ Koepka
Europe the following year, winning the Montecchia Golf Open in Italy.
And, a month later, he confirmed his budding talent in La Gomera with
a record, 10-stroke victory in the Fred Olsen España Challenge at Tecina Golf, where he shot a total of 24 shots under par. Three weeks further on, he took the Scottish Hydro Challenge to clinch an automatic ticket to the main European Tour, which is the dream of every professional player in Europe. Koepka was third in the 2014 Dubai Desert Classic, and the European Masters, and he then captured the Turkish Airlines Open. It enabled him to finish eighth in the Race to Dubai, and he was voted European Tour Rookie of the Year.
He returned to the States in 2015 to join the PGA Tour, and he believes his successful foray into Europe left him in good stead for the big-time. But Koepka almost faced a melt-down. “There was a low point the night before I won my final Challenge Tour event to clinch my full European Tour card,” he recalled. “I called Blake Smith, my manager, and I told him I didn’t want to play. “For some reason, I just wanted to go home. I think I had played too many weeks in a row, with not a day off, and it really got to me. “But to get to travel the world at 21 years old, and do what we do for a living, is pretty neat.” Koepka, a member of last year’s victorious US Ryder Cup team, received a phone call on the eve of the US Open final day from Dustin Johnson, who missed the cut at Erin Hills. The world No.1 told him: “Stay patient, don’t get ahead of yourself, and the US Open trophy will be yours.” The impressive victory that followed earned Koepka £1.7m, and lifted him into the world-rankings’ top 10 for the first time. “I felt confident all week, and coming down that final stretch on Sunday was great,” he said.

CD Tenerife: Promotion Play-Off

and his heading power could have blown the tie wide open early on. But Raul Camara mopped up the ball nicely with a little tap-back to keeper Dani Hernandez. Gaku was making it all tick for Tenerife, and when Suso broke down the right and found Choco with his pass, the Honduras striker added a neat touch-on, for Gaku to slot the ball past the Cadiz keeper. Ideally, Tenerife would have increased their lead in the second half to avoid any doubts. But defences were on top, with Jorge showing maturity beyond his years for Tenerife. Tayron, who replaced Suso after 78 minutes, wasted a headed chance at the post. And extra-time was almost unbearable. It produced a flurry of nearmisses as time ticked away. But Dani was strong and alert, while Ortuño shot wide from close-range. But Aketze missed the clearest of chances, sending the ball into the night sky, way above the target. He tried to shrink down into his shirt, knowing how much his miss meant. For Tenerife, the final whistle sparked relief, joy, and a mini pitch invasion. But coach Marti was more reserved as he anticipated his team’s last two, giant steps ahead.
Tails-up for the decider (Promotion play-off final, 1st leg) A 1-0 win never sounded so good … and an air of confidence hung over the Heliodoro stadium on Wednesday evening after Tenerife’s best performance of the promotion play-offs. They saw off an averagelooking Getafe, and, tomorrow (Saturday), the decisive away game in Madrid should hold no fears for them. They know a 1-0 win for Getafe would see them triumph because of their superior finishing position in the league. But if Tenerife nick a goal, the Madrid team will have to score three times. And they hardly troubled keeper Dani Hernandez in Santa Cruz. A much more positiveminded Tenerife charged

into Getafe from the first whistle, and the balloons, ticker-tape, and blue-andwhite streamers still hung in the air as Amath was bundled over by Cala in the box after 30 seconds. The ref ignored penalty claims, but it encouraged Amath to keep testing the defence. The young striker was back to his best, teasing and tormenting
with speed and skill. The home defence snuffed out the few early breaks Getafe managed, and awesome Jorge Saenz had main-threat Molina sitting comfortably in his pocket. Then, just after 20 minutes, Tenerife swept forward again and Jorge rose majestically to head the ball into the Getafe net. The party mood was now in full swing, and it could have been 2-0 just before the break. Amath unlocked the Getafe back-line and released Choco, but he scooped the ball high with the goal at his mercy. The Honduras striker can sometimes drift out of a game, but Choco got through loads of hard work and suffered continual
knocks. Foster bulldozed him down after the restart, and a penalty might have been given in a league game. But not on this momentous occasion. Referees in these play-off matches have made bigger allowances for the passion and pressure of these vital clashes, ignoring many crunching challenges. But Tenerife didn’t let it disturb their drive for the big prize, and an hour had gone when Dani had his first serious feel of the ball, collecting a speculative high shot. Getafe were slow and easy to read, and, hopefully, that will continue into the season’s final game. When midfielder Alberto came on for Amath after 67
minutes, it signalled a more defensive plan for Tenerife, as they looked to preserve their precious advantage. Gaku departed to a roaring ovation after another stirring performance, but replacement Aaron made little impact. Getafe had their best chance in the final minutes, Cala Diaz slipping past the defence and firing a shot at the corner of the Tenerife goal. But Dani turned the ball aside to ensure a hardfought success, which showed Tenerife’s great mental strength. The play-off run-in, with no time to breathe between games, must be draining for those involved. But one last push, and CD Tenerife could be gracing the mighty La Liga stage next season!
