blow-out hits Major airlines Continued from Front

This dramatic image shows the mangled wheels, which cracked from the force of the two-year-old aircraft crashing down on the runway. And some tourists said they heard “a loud bang” when the tyres exploded. There were also reports of travellers being trapped for hours onboard Tenerifebound planes, which had been grounded at British airports for obvious reasons. Major airlines and companies, including EasyJet, Ryanair, Thomson, Thomas Cook, British Airways and Monarch all faced severe disruptions until 9pm. And traffic controllers said the airport had become congested, with incoming flights sent on to other airports. In all, 320 passengers and 11 crew members were evacuated from the plane, with no injuries, and a spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Flight LS917, from Manchester to Tenerife, experienced tyre damage upon landing. “All customers disembarked via the steps, as normal, and have been transferred to the terminal. “We apologise to all customers affected. The safety and comfort of our customers and crew is our No.1 priority at all times.” The problems, which began early afternoon, led to incoming flights being diverted to Tenerife North airport (3), Gran Canaria (20) and Lanzarote (1), and, overall, six flights waiting on the ground to take off were delayed.

Then, at around 5pm, the spokesperson said: “There will be no arrivals in this airport until 10pm. But by 7.20pm, the all-clear had been sounded, and it was announced: “The runway is clear, and flights, which had been diverted en-route, are already back on course to land in South Tenerife”. Julie Rittigan, 58, who was supposed to be flying to Birmingham with Ryanair, claimed her disabled husband was forced to lie on the floor of their trapped aircraft. She told The Sun: “The place is just madness. We were told the flight was cancelled, and then that it was back on. “There are thousands trapped here, and no one knows what anyone is doing. Ryanair has done nothing. It’s absolutely disgusting. We are still stuck here. Little children are on the floor, and one mum has no nappies for her young kids.” A Ryanair spokesperson, apologising to customers for the major delays, told The Sun: “A number of flights to/from Tenerife were delayed due to the temporary closure of the runway at Tenerife Airport, which resulted in some flight diversions. “Affected customers were provided with refreshment vouchers, the runway has reopened and flights have resumed. “Ryanair sincerely apologises to customers affected by these delays, which were entirely beyond our control.” An EasyJet spokesperson

added: “We can confirm that, as a result of a runway closure at Tenerife Airport, two flights were diverted and six flights to and from Tenerife were delayed overnight.”

“We are working hard to provide all passengers with hotel accommodation and meals, as required, and have updated all passengers with the new departure details of their flight. “We recommend that all

customers flying to or from Tenerife continue to check the status of their flight on our Flight Tracker page. “While the circumstances are outside of our control, EasyJet apologises for any inconvenience caused.”

TV’s Benidorm is holiday hell for a mum and her son A MOTHER and her 19-yearold son have complained that their holiday was “absolutely ruined” after they accidentally booked into the hotel where TV show Benidorm is filmed. Lee Carter and his mum Susan, 47, forked out £1,167 for an all-inclusive break to Sol Pelicanos Ocas for their first holiday in years. But they were gobsmacked when, they say, half the main pool was taped off for their entire holiday for filming and show staff allegedly told them off for talking! Office worker Lee said guests were even banned from taking holiday photos of themselves by the poolside near the set. Lee, from Stockport, said “I feel horrible. This has ruined our only holiday. “After three years waiting to go away, it’s so unfair that we could not use the full facilities - the entire pool on a holiday we have paid so much for. It completely ruined it.’ Susan, who works as a carer, added “We couldn’t even go round half the pool because it was taped off with big boards up. “We had no warning at all, otherwise I would have booked a hotel where we could use the full facilities. I’m gutted for us both.” Benidorm, the ITV comedy sitcom, is a long-running series about holiday-makers and staff at the Solana allinclusive hotel in Spain. The pool scenes are filmed at the Sol Pelicanos Ocas hotel, with the restaurant scenes in Neptune’s filmed across the road in Morgan’s Tavern. Huge, fake, grass-andbamboo walls block

LARGE masses of seaweed have persuaded the Public Heath Department to ban swimming in the sea between Güímar and Granadilla. On Monday morning, a reconnaissance helicopter flew over the affected areas, and Canarian spokeswoman Rosa Dávila said: “Only a few clusters are actually approaching the beaches.”

Squatter the paths around the pool, with red-and-white tape stretching over the swimming pool. Lee said they were banned from one half of the pool, and signs were put up asking them not to take photos. He also insisted that strict rules were in force, despite them seeing just a single scene being filmed during their week-long break, earlier this month. Lee and Susan said they had no idea the show’s 10th series was being filmed at the hotel before they booked a week-long holiday there. “And when I took a photo of me and my mum, a staff member from the show said, ‘no photos with Benidorm set in the background’,” he added. “We told him it was not acceptable, saying, ‘we’ve paid a lot of money’, but he wasn’t bothered and just walked off. “This has had a huge negative impact on our holiday. It has absolutely

Knife-man arrested after a beach attack ARONA’S Local Police arrested a 31-year-old Columbian man for stabbing a Spaniard with a knife last Saturday, just metres away from a group of officers. As they cleared the Las Vistas beach, in Los Cristianos following the San Juan celebrations, a fight broke nearby at around 6.30am. And, while the cops made their way towards the fracas, the 25-year-

old male victim, a Cabo Blanco resident, collapsed after being struck in the chest and side. The Columbian, who has a police record, fled, only to be caught 100m from Calle Juan XXIII by an officer, who also recovered the knife. The victim was, initially, taken to Hospiten Sur, and later transferred to Candelaria Hospital for surgery.

ruined it for us and we wouldn’t come back. It has been a holiday from hell.” A spokesperson for Tiger Aspect Productions, the team behind the show, said “The cast and crew of Benidorm are currently enjoying their 10th year filming, in and around the resort. “Many of the iconic sets, including the pool at the Sol Pelicanos Ocas, have become tourist attractions in themselves. “Fans of the show spend hours meeting and chatting to the cast, observing scenes being captured. The crew are noted for being courteous and making sure that we, as a film unit, keep ourselves as contained as possible. “Their requests for silence is standard on any set when the cameras are turning, and the red-and-white tape mentioned has to be in place as a Health and Safety requirement. “We have worked harm-

oniously with the people of Benidorm, the management and guests of the Sol Pelicanos Ocas and holidaymakers, for all this time.” He added “It is important to make it clear, however, that the hotel website, as well as other travel and tourism sites, states that the pool bar at the Sol Pelicanos Ocas is available only from July onwards, due to filming prior to this point. “The hotel manager is also more than happy to deal with any questions guests have about the implications that filming might have on their movement around the hotel and its grounds. “And, of course, it was never our intention to inconvenience these particular holiday-makers during their trip. “In fact, nothing could be further from our aim, which is, of course, to bring lots of laughter to the many fans of our show.”

evicted, in a few minutes

A SQUATTER was caught red-handed by Local Police, minutes after breaking into a Costa del Silencio property. Thanks to the help of neighbours, the cops were on the case in a flash, turfing out the illegal intruder. They filed a police report with Arona Courts and also located the property owner.

PP scandal keeps running

FOUR former PP ministers, in the Gurtel corruption case, have denied receiving illegal back-handers from the party’s former treasurer. Javier Arenas, Ángel Acebes, Jaime Mayor Oreja and Rodrigo Rato (pictured left to right in that order) all rejected allegations in court that then treasurer Luis Barcenas had paid them from a slush fund. They were called as witnesses by Barcenas’ lawyer to shed light on the PP’s role in the scandal. “I have never received a euro of anyone else’s money to my pay, and nobody has ever suggested that to me,” said an indignant Arenas, who served as PP SecretaryGeneral from 1999 to 2003. “I never received money from Barcenas. Everything I received, I declared to the tax man.” The Gurtel case into political corruption within the PP party has been continuing since 2009, with Barcenas accused of running slush funds to pay party officials.

Tenerife miss the final goal TENERIFE will again be playing football in the Segunda Division next season, after being beaten 3-1 by Getafe in the second leg of their promotion play-off final on Saturday night in Madrid. The visitors, going into the match with a 1-0 lead from the first leg, were in positive mood, with La Liga in their sights - Real Madrid, Barcelona et al. But they were shellshocked when Getafe started quickly, with two goals in the first 12 minutes, to go 2-1 ahead on aggregate. Tenerife bounced back with a quick reply, three minutes later, when Lozano scored to make it 2-1 on the night and 2-2 on aggregate.

But Getafe scored a third in the 36th minute to make it 3-1 at half-time, after a frantic opening 45 minutes. A tense second half saw fewer chances for both teams, and all Tenerife needed was one goal to clinch it, away goals counting double. But Getafe came out victorious, winning 3-2 on aggregate to clinch a precious place in La Liga. Tenerife will need to go back to the drawing board to mastermind a plan to return to top-flight football next season. And that means a good start to the 2017-18 season because they were hovering around the relegation zone over Christmas.

It’s Tenerife heartache, but the Getafe teama are completely oblivious as they celebrate their promotion to La Liga

UK Prime Minister’s huge relief for expats THERESA May has good news for Britain’s expats, who are concerned about their post-Brexit future, and what it will entail. The UK Prime Minister has banished fears by reassuring them that the Government will leave everything in place. She told the House of Commons: “The UK

will continue to export and uprate the UK state pension, and provide associated healthcare cover within the EU. “We will continue to protect the export of other benefits and associated healthcare cover, where the individual is in receipt of those benefits on the cut-off date”. That

could be nearly two years away, when the UK says goodbye to the European Union in March 2019. And she also gave an assurance that the UK is keen to carry on participating in the European Health Insurance Card scheme, which will be a bonus for expats and tourists alike.

Plane had a lovely bunch of coconuts THE Guardia Civil, aware of the various, thought-provoking ways smugglers bring their drugs into Spain, now has a Customs Risk Analysis Unit. Its officers, working with the Tax Agency, became suspicious of the importation of bananas and coconuts to Madrid airport from Colombia. Some of the nuts, when passed through scanners, appeared to contain something denser than

milk, which provoked a search. Some 65 boxes of coconuts were each found to contain one “doctored” nut, which had been drilled, the milk removed and replaced with liquid cocaine. They were then sealed in an attempt to camouflage the smugglers’ actions … to no avail. A total of 47.678kg of cocaine was recovered and three people, two Colombian men and a Venezuelan woman, were arrested.

Old driver’s death crash A PENSIONER died on Wednesday morning after crashing his Seat Ibiza into five other cars at the entrance to Güímar. Witnesses said the 75-yearold was driving extremely quickly, as though he wasn’t in control of the vehicle. Paramedics took him to Güímar Medical centre, where he suffered a heart attack. He was revived and transferred, in critical condition, to Candelaria Hospital. But he later passed away there.

If walls could talk! AN English-language tour of Adeje’s historic, towncentre buildings was organised by the local council this week for a small group of English and Belgian residents. It was led by Heritage Councillor Desiderio Afonso Ruiz and lasted just under two hours, with local Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo also joining the group. And Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga was also there to greet residents as they set off. “This was the first in what we hope will be a series of tours, and we were delighted with the turnout, and the feedback we have already received,” said Clio O’Flynn, who works for Adeje Council on building relations with the borough’s non-Spanish residents. She added that organisers were already looking at a possible tour to the mountain village of Taucho in the autumn, and were also considering similar tours in other languages. The tour took residents on a short-but-fascinating journey to the Fort House, Santa Úrsula church, the Plaza de España, the Franciscan convent and the Canarian library. Desiderio has a wealth of knowledge about the town’s history, and, like many residents, can link his own family tree back to Guanche times. He explained the story of the Pontes family, who were the lords of Adeje in post-conquistador times, having been granted land for financing the invading Spanish armies. They moved here and ran a sugar-cane industry, with slave holdings, and, quite likely, also had dealings with local pirates. The fort house was destroyed by fire many decades ago, and, today,

one of the Mayor’s hopes is that the Council can buy back the fort house and turn it into an interpretative museum for the borough. In the Santa Úrsula church, the group saw where the Marquis and his family would have had their own entrance and balcony to attend Holy Mass, so they wouldn’t have to sit with the public. There are also clearlymarked dates of construction of the church, the initial section being completed in the middle of the 16th century. In the Convent, too, there were some lovely “word-ofmouth” histories, including the possible reason for an obvious cut in one of the huge tapestries, now preserved and hung on the convent wall. “We have been told that a long time ago, before the value was realised, some of the local ladies were cutting up what they saw as an old carpet, to use as dusters,” explained Desiderio. The final stop was the Canarian library, which is also a fine example of a

Canarian home, with an interior patio and stonebuilt rooms surrounding it. Here, the Councillor thanked everyone for attending and presented them with a book on the San Sebastián fiesta, and copies of two drawings of Adeje in a bygone age. He also hoped everyone had understood his English (which they had), and looked forward to the next tour. The Council would be delighted to hear from other groups interested in similar tours in English. “These

But the saving discount applies, as before, only to those who have a valid DNI (for Spanish nationals) and those with a travel certificate for European residents. Binter, the only Canarian airline operating in the Canary Islands right now,

events are being designed with residents in mind, so that people who choose to live in Adeje can find out a little bit more about their new home,” said Clio. “They can also learn about the history of the town, which has moved from what was a rural fiefdom to a leading tourist destination in a relatively short space of time.” Clio can be contacted via email englishtime@adeje.es or through the Adeje Town Hall page, which is the official Adeje Council page in English.

Where are YOU resident for Tax Purposes?

Non-Resident Income Tax (NRIT)

We are often asked by our Spanish ex-pat clients what tax they should be paying in Spain. Below is a quick guide to whether you are tax resident in Spain, and then, if you are, what tax you should be paying.

Expatriate employees, who take up positions of employment in Spain, becoming Spanish tax resident in the process, may elect to be taxed on their Spanish sourced income according to the NRIT regime. You may only avail of the NRIT regime for a maximum of six tax years and must also comply with various conditions including the following:

Tax residency arises in Spain where one or more of the following applies: • An individual spends more than 183 days per year residing in Spain. • Spain is an individual’s main place of living (i.e. family home is in Spain and children attend school in Spain). • Spain is an individual’s base for their economic activities.

• Your move to Spain occurs as a consequence of an employment contract. • You have not been a resident in Spain in the 10 years prior to taking up the position of employment. • The work is actually performed in Spain. • The employment contract is carried out for a Spanish entity or a permanent establishment of a multi-national organisation.

Individual Income Tax (IIT) If you are resident in Spain for tax purposes, there are two distinct categories of tax residency in Spain which may apply to you, namely Non-resident income tax, and Individual income tax.

The IIT regime will apply to all other individuals who are currently tax resident in Spain and do not benefit from the NRIT regime. The Spanish tax year runs from 1 January to 31 December.

British woman raped AN Italian man has been arrested by National Police after, allegedly, sexuallyassaulting a British woman in Puerto Colon. The incident was said to have taken place on 27th April at 2am, when the Local Police were notified that a woman had been raped in the bathroom of a bar there. The National Police reported that the woman went to the rest room and was followed by the 29-year-old man, who was accused of taking advantage of the woman being semi-naked to abuse her. He then left hurriedly, leaving the victim in a state of shock. The Local Police discovered the Italian, still on the premises, and arrested

police report was processed, the accused was sent to the judicial authority.

‘Social-contract’ workers in a sparkling spruce-up THE 57 people working on social-employment contracts to improve and maintain various public spaces in Adeje, have received wellearned praise. Councillors Carmen Rosa González Cabrera and Manuel Luis Méndez Martín head the Work and Municipal Services and Economic Development and Employment Policies respectively. And they were quick to congratulate the “professional competence of those directing these minor works, which will improve and maintain many of the borough’s public zones,

colleges, etc.” They added: “The teams are working well, and the results are already appreciated by residents in the relevant neighbourhoods, who have also praised the attitude of those working under this scheme.” During their visit to Las Rosas, the Councillors saw the team working to improve existing pavements, as well as the integration of new paving along some stretches of road that haven’t been covered for pedestrian use. A green zone has also been reconditioned for residents’

leisure use, and a number of barriers to those with mobility difficulties have been removed. And, shortly, a number of streets will be re-laid and zones painted. In Callao Salvaje and Playa Paraíso, the workers have concentrated on finishing the work on a pétanque/ boules pitch, installing a new drainage system in one of the green zones, plus maintenance work and the painting of public areas. These projects are being funded jointly by the Canarian Employment Service and Adeje Council.

Parents ‘sold’ daughter to a nearby neighbour THE parents of a 14-year-old girl, and two other people, have been detained by the Guardia Civil on alleged human-trafficking charges. Guardia agents began an investigation on 19th April into the disappearance of the teenage Romanian national in Pedrera, a town in Sevilla. And, having taken witness statements, the team

suspected that the girl could have been sold by her own parents to a Huelva neighbour in exchange for a van and small lump-sum of cash. The child was recently located by the police in Obrezje, Slovenia, on her way to Romania with an adult man (VM), whose father had, allegedly, bought the girl in Huelva.

After emergency services rescued the victim, she was taken to hospital for relevant medical tests. When the results came through, the Guardia issued a Euro-arrest warrant for VM. He was later detained and charged with alleged trafficking offences and sexual child-abuse. He was imprisoned without bail, and the parents have also been arrested.

A MAN aged 25, was stabbed to death by his father-in-law, according to witnesses from the Juan XXIII neighbourhood in Santa Cruz. The men became involved a row over the victim’s alleged violent attacks on his partner, the 50-yearold man’s daughter. The argument escalated when the victim punched his father-in-law in the face. The older man then ran into his house

nearby, and is believed to have hidden a knife in his clothes as he went looking for his adversary. As he approached, the father-in-law was said to have pulled the knife from his clothes and stabbed the victim, who collapsed. The daughter’s dad, who tried to flee, was arrested by National Police a few hundred yards away from the crime scene. He appeared before Santa Cruz Courts on Tuesday, charged with homicide.

Gang-rape

at festival

A GIRL aged 13 was gang-raped by a group of youths on a Spanish beach in Alicante during last Friday’s San Juan festival. The assailants were described by local witnesses as Moroccan teenagers, according to The Olive Press. People in the area described how the gang had tried to sexuallyassault a second girl before her father stepped in to stop the attack. One witness told the online newspaper: “The police arrived and the boys were detained. Several people said they were between 13 and 15 years old.” The initial assault happened on the beach, before the gang made their way through Cabo

de las Huertas - a highend area in Alicante – in the hope of carrying out more attacks. The father of the second girl stopped the rampage and called the police, which led to arrests. Another witness said: “Several shouts were heard, and, in a few minutes, the police were already in the area. I could see several children sitting together on a police motorcycle. “Various people said that, in addition to attacking the girls, they also stole mobile phones.” The night of San Juan, which welcomes the summer season, is an ancient tradition celebrated every year with bonfires in many Spanish towns and in Tenerife.

Spanish survivor’s towering memories A SPANIARD, who survived the London tower-block blaze in Kensington with his mum and dad, has lost “41 years of memories” … and their home. Iván Costa Suárez, together with parents Dorinda and José - originally from Galicia - were asleep when a Portuguese neighbour banged on their door. They also had a telephone call in the 24-storey block from another family, whose flat was just 70 metres from the source of the fire, and who had spotted flames just outside their windows. “It makes me want to cry,” said Ivan. “Twentytwo years working here to make this a home, and it’s destroyed in half-an-hour.” The trio escaped by walking down the stairs from the 13th floor of the Grenfell Tower because they were afraid of becoming trapped, although the lift was working. They stopped briefly on the seventh floor to alert another Galicia-born family, with whom they are good

friends. “When we got up and went to the lounge, we saw our kitchen in flames,” said Carmen Sánchez. “We shut the door and left.” Carmen and husband José Vieiro also used the stairs to get out, and, fortunately, their daughter, Vanesa, was not at home. “Memories of 41 years, a whole lifetime, were inside,” lamented José Vieiro. “But at least we got out alive.” The two families have been given rooms by a family from the province of A Coruña (Galicia), who live nearby. The government has ordered an urgent investigation into Hotpoint’s FF175BP fridge, after police revealed that it was the model which started the Grenfell Tower blaze, killing at least 80 people. The model had not been subject to any productrecall, but will now be examined by safety experts as part of a governmentordered review. Residents’ associations have been complaining for years about serious

safety issues in the block, which comprises council or privately-rented flats, mostly. It was built in 1974 and renovated a year ago. Prime Minister Theresa May has announced a plan for inspecting similar buildings “offering guarantees” to their occupants. Meanwhile, work is proceeding on replacing old, dangerous cladding in various tower blocks around the country. Many residents are complaining of being rehoused while the operations are carried out, some even staying put in protest. At least 25 tower blocks have the same tinder-box cladding that helped engulf Grenfell Tower in just 15 minutes, and thousands of people in London, Manchester, Plymouth and Portsmouth are living in blocks encased in panels blamed for the devastating blaze. Premier Inn admitted it has “serious concerns” about cladding on three hotels, including one in Mrs May’s

Maidenhead constituency. In fact, as many as 30,000 buildings, including more hotels, hospitals, GP surgeries, student flats and office blocks, will also have to be tested to see whether they are also “combustible”. Scotland Yard said the tests carried out as part of the investigation show that tiles and insulation “don’t pass any safety tests”. Kensington and Chelsea Borough Council will be investigated because it inspected Grenfell Tower on at least 16 occasions, its staff signing-off the building as safe every time. Met Police Detective Superintendent Fiona McCormack said documents and materials had been seized from a “number of organisations”. She added: “We are looking at every criminal offence, from manslaughter onwards. We are looking at every health-and-safety and fire-safety offences, and we are reviewing every company involved in the building and refurbishment

of Grenfell Tower.” Grenfell’s forensic search is not likely to be completed until the end of the year, but she said there were “no hidden victims”. DSI McCormack said of the blaze investigation: “Every complete body has been removed from the building. What we are dealing with now, as you can imagine in the intense heat, is a very distressing scene. “What we haven’t got is a picture of how many people might have been in there. That’s the number I’m really worried about, that there might have been other innocent people in there.” At least 14 buildings, across eight local-authority areas in England, have flammable cladding. But another 25 are believed to have aluminium composite cladding, similar to that fixed to Grenfell. The Charity Commission says an initial £20,000 will be given to the families of each person who has died, or is declared missing presumed dead, from the money raised by numerous appeals.

‘Candid Camera’ joker A YOUTUBER, who specialised in practical jokes, taken by a hidden-camera, has been awarded compensation of just 30 euros after being punched by a victim. A judge said the “vlogger”, Sergio Soler, who sells his video “hits”, must “accept a certain level of risk” with his provocative behaviour. Soler, whose user-name is Mr Granbomba, makes money from his videos of “Candid Camera-style” pranks - one of which targeted parceldelivery-man Ricardo Osorio. Mr Granbomba pretended to be robbing Osorio of his packages before calling him “caranchoa”, a minor insult

which, roughly, translates as “April Fool” and comes from Mediaeval Spanish. Upon being called caranchoa, Osorio punched Soler and was arrested and charged. But a magistrate let him off with a nominal fine, saying the delivery man, probably, believed genuinely that he was being robbed, and that the stress of the situation made him lose his cool. “Evidently, his actions cannot be justified, and this verdict is not justifying it - responding to a verbal offensive with physical aggression. But we have analysed the evidence and we fall in favour of the apellant, who was working

when he was targeted and was under the normal levels of stress associated with his job,” said Judge José Antonio Durá, during an appeal filed by Osorio in Alicante Provincial Court. “The victim of the assault was fully aware, and accepted as an occupational hazard, that he could be placing his physical safety in jeopardy in order to profit from his behaviour, acknowledging the risk that he could end up being hit one day. “Soler even boasted about how he deserved to get punched because his actions create provocation, and that this was precisely the aspect

that attracts viewers to his videos.” The court said Osorio was acting in “legitimate selfdefence” as he “erroneously believed he was being robbed”, having told his company this before the video went viral. Osorio’s solicitor, Carlos Frigola, defending, said he was “satisfied” with the verdict, since his client could now simply “pay off the 30-euro fine and get on with his life”. Frigola says he wants to try to reach an out-ofcourt agreement with Mr Granbomba to ensure he does not take any further action against Osorio.

Wanted man carried drugs

GUARDIA Civil officers last Saturday arrested a 30-year-old foreigner in Las Americas for drugpeddling. The man, who lives in San Miguel and has a European arrest warrant against him, was identified by the officers. They seized the 13.5gms of cocaine and 755 euros he was carrying, then handed him over to the Arona Courts to be dealt with.

Hitler’s eyes were fixed on Germany bagging Canaries SPAIN was declared neutral in World War II after Germany’s leader, Adolf Hitler, failed to secure an alliance with General Francisco Franco during a meeting at Hendaye in October 1940, a few months after France had surrendered. But secret documents, newly-released from the UK’s National Archives, have raised an intriguing “whatif” scenario because Hitler, at the end of 1940, might have backed a take-over of the Canaries by its large German community. Among the declassified documents is a report from 11th December that year, entitled “Possible German Action in the Atlantic”, which was read by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s War Cabinet. It emerged almost two months after

the meeting between Hitler and Franco to negotiate, unsuccessfully, Spain’s entrance into the European war on the side of Germany. The document explores the possibility of the Canaries falling under German control, giving them a strategic stronghold for their Atlantic operations. The Allies had already prepared plans the following year to invade the islands by taking the Las Palmas port. The report notes “evidence” of Spanish troop movements, warning the Germans against military action The report’s five signatories explain to the War Cabinet that though they had no indications of Germany proposing to invade the Canaries “with the collusion of the Spanish authorities,” they did observe “significant military activity” on

the island. But they concluded that these troop movements were part of an effort by Franco to protect the Canaries against an invasion “by any party”. It meant that if Germany were to try to take control of the islands, it would have had to do so “by force”. The Allies were concerned that Hitler might attempt to seize control of the Canaries by supporting a coup. This would have been highly feasible because a decent-sized German community was already present in the archipelago. Some 2,000 had recently arrived by plane, and several German ships were moored at various ports throughout the archipelago. Additionally, the situation then in the Canaries was conducive to an uprising: a result

of “poor economic conditions” and “disaffection with the regime” of Franco. The report concludes that had Hitler tried to instigate a coup, it would have been backed by the German navy. But the evidence suggested to the Allies that the Germans

would not have been able to utilise aerial support to launch an invasion. The report also reveals the Allies’ detailed knowledge of the Canarian defences, which numbered around 10,000 soldiers, with support from 52 planes stationed at

Gran Canaria Airport (24 JU 52 bombers and 28 Fiat CR 32 fighters). Also, there were 23 other bombers available at the Cape Juby airport in Western Sahara, on the African mainland (12 Heinkel 111s, five JU 52s, and six Savoia S 81s).

Death of huge

sperm whale

A DEAD sperm whale, measuring fully 15 metres and weighing several tons, has washed up on the Costa Teguise coastline of Lanzarote. As it was impossible to get a crane to its location, a tug-boat was employed

to drag the poor animal to Arrecife port. The island’s Environmental Department will move the whale to its Zonzamas complex, where a necropsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

NEWS IN BRIEF Shopping centre bomb fear MORE than 2,000 people in Gran Canaria’s Atlántico Vecindario Shopping Centre, in Vecindario, were evacuated by police after a suspicious case was found in the toilets on the first floor, dumped by a 43-year-old Brit. The incident took place around 7pm on Sunday in the open-air centre, and alerted the bomb squad. Fortunately, they confirmed it was a false alarm because the case merely contained food. That evening, Guardia Civil officers located the man, who lives on the island. They are investigating him on suspicion of public disorder.

Nanny’s accidental death

Kim Jong-Un has a real Benidorm feel! KIM Jong-Un, the North Korean leader, has ordered a Benidorm-style beach resort to be created after his officials were left “amazed” by a trip to Spain’s tourism hotspots. A 20-strong party visited a number of spots in Spain, including Benidorm, Salou and Barcelona on a monthlong tour through the country. And while they were decidedly unimpressed with

the cultural city of Barcelona, the group were enthralled with Benidorm’s touristpopular resorts such as Costa Blanca and the Terra Mítica amusement park. As a result, North Korea is planning its own beach resort in Wonsan, a port city in the country’s eastern coast, to be “aimed at the domestic and international markets”. A spokesman from North Korea’s embassy in Madrid

said that the touring officials were “amazed by the dimensions” of Benidorm’s towers and holiday parks. “We wanted to focus on the beaches because that is what we are interested in,” he revealed. And he added that although the Oropesa del Mar was the closest match to what the country wants to build in Wonsan, their complex will be “a little bit bigger”.

A BRITISH nanny, who drank too much following a row with her boyfriend, drowned accidentally in the bath at her Magaluf hotel. Samantha Johnson (above), rarely touched alcohol, but it is believed that she passed out after drinking vodka and liquors with fellow tourists at the resort. The 23-year-old woman, from Bispham in Blackpool, Lancashire, was found dead in her bath by staff after other guests complained of water seeping out of her room. An inquest was told that tests showed Miss Johnson, known as Samie, had swallowed the equivalent of 7½ times the Spanish drink-driving limit. She died on 2nd May last year after flying to the holiday island on a romantic trip with her unnamed boyfriend, who was ordered off the island by police after the row.

Brave Debbie misses a heartfelt swansong AS many as 200 friends and supporters turned out to pay tribute to Debbie Padgett at last Saturday’s fund-raising afternoon for her family. It was held on Funchal at the Java Bar, Los Cristianos, and such was the occasion and attendance that all the other local bars joined in! Debbie, a popular expat, who lived in The Heights with her partner, Jim, was diagnosed with terminal cancer earlier this year. Tragically, at the age of 56, she passed away the next day, even as those who attended the tribute afternoon were still lavishing praise on the event, and on the long stream of entertainers who donated their time and talent for free. Proud Jim, who admits he’s not a speech-maker, said: “I would like to thank all Debbie’s family and friends, and everyone who attended this celebration of her life, which turned out to be absolutely fantastic day.” Such was the feeling for Debbie, originally from

As honest as they come

Barnsley in South Yorkshire, who moved here with Jim 17 years ago, that a remarkable total of 4,000 euros was raised. Some 25% was donated to cancer research organisation FACT, and the remainder went to her family to cover the funeral costs. Brave Debbie, who leaves two sisters and three brothers, had a lump in her breast for two years before being diagnosed, and then fought the disease for 12 months,

only for the cancer to spread to her brain. Sandra Coates, who organised the event and the fund-raising with Karen Brown, said: “Debbie worked locally as a cleaner at Victoria Court, and she used to go to the bars on Funchal and the Apolo Centre. “She was a much-loved lady, and the turn-out on Saturday was amazing. The wake is being held back at the Java Bar at 4pm on Friday (today), and all are welcome.”

A GOOD Samaritan, who found a wallet holding over 500 euros and handed it into Santa Cruz Local Police, anonymously, received his reward. The cops were so impressed by his honesty that they shared the story on Twitter, writing: “We have just been handed a wallet with 519.89 euros and we have located its owner.” The driver had placed the wallet on the roof of his car while refuelling at a garage, He forgot about it when driving off and it fell to the ground. However, thanks to the ID documents found inside, the police traced the man’s wife and returned the cash-laden wallet.

Heat-stroke kills gardener A YOUNG gardener died from heat-stroke on Monday in Estepona at 2pm as the Malaga temperatures reached 40C. His neighbours alerted authorities when the 25-year-old collapsed, after tending to local gardens all morning in the searing heat. Paramedics attempted to revive him, but he died on the way to Hospital Costa del Sol.

Migrant’s ‘dirty’ escape ride was all for nothing

Islamic Federation chief condemns terror strikes AROUND 2,000 Muslims congregated in the football field annex to the Antonio Domínguez Stadium in Los Cristianos on Sunday morning to celebrate the end of Ramadan. They also condemned the recent terrorist attacks around the world, Tijani El Bouji, President of the Canarian Islamic Federation, and Imam of the Adeje mosque, telling them: “Unfortunately, these attacks are perpetrated in the name of our religion. “But, in reality, they have nothing to do with the

true essence of Islam. Unfortunately, humanity is suffering because of terrorism - violence between same species, even in the remotest parts of the world, and not just in the West.” He added: “Therefore, I condemn and reject on behalf of all attendees, any form of terrorism under any name and against any group. “We do not sow hatred and we do not encourage social conflict. Our greeting is in the name of peace.” The Adeje mosque Imam assured the huge gathering: “Allah would never be

in agreement with these attacks, that hurt and damage Islam, ruining all the work achieved towards coexistence, understanding and dialogue.” He also encouraged the Muslims: “Do not let them fraction and segment you, due to your ethnicity or religion.” Finally, he took a moment to remember the victims of terrorist attacks, “such as those in London or Quebec, as well as those in Palestine, Syria, Libya, Yemen or Iraq… the forgotten victims, and worldwide silence”!

A YOUNG migrant clung to the underside of a tourist coach for hours on a 140-mile journey from Morocco to Spain to make his getaway. The boy, said to be 15, looked dishevelled as he was pulled from the vehicle, covered in dirt and engine oil. The coach had travelled from the northern city of Tetouan, near Tangier, all the way to Andalucia’s Seville. A police spokesman said: “He was taken to hospital but appeared to be in good condition. “The bus came from Tetouan, and, when it arrived in Seville, the driver went to let the passengers out when he noticed something strange. “He called the police and firefighters, and they found the boy, who was holding on to the bottom of the bus.” But the teenager’s fearful journey appears to have been in vain, because he will almost certainly be sent back to a migrant-holding centre.

Hundreds rehomed as blaze spreads rapidly A FOREST fire in southern Spain, threatening a national park famous for its biodiversity, has forced the evacuation of at least 1,500 people. It began on Saturday and advanced eastward on Sunday, entering Donaña National Park, one of Spain’s most important nature reserves, a tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1994. The park, which has over 50,000 hectares of wetlands and woods, is an important stop for migratory birds from Africa and Europe. It is also home to a variety of animals, including the highlyendangered Iberian lynx and the Iberian imperial eagle. “The fire has entered the limits of the reserve, and that is where we are focusing our efforts,” said Jose Gregorio Fiscal Lopez, from the regional Andalusian authority in charge of the environment. Local authorities sent in 10 helicopters, seven planes and four water-bombing jets to deal with the blaze, which comes a week after forest fires killed more than 60 people in neighbouring Portugal. Over 150 firefighters were also combating the blaze.

Spain was hit with a spate of forest fires in 2015, and officials said some of those could have been started deliberately. The cause of this latest fire was also not clear, and regional president Susana Diaz, who rushed to the area affected, suggested: “The human factor cannot be excluded.” Diaz said fighting the blaze was proving difficult because of the hot, dry weather, with temperatures reaching 39 degrees Celsius, and shifting winds. She added: “There’s no risk to the population,” after hundreds of people were evacuated from campsites and houses near the town of Moguer on Spain’s southern coast, where the fire started at 9.30 on Saturday night in an area of pine trees called La Penuela de Moguer. Around 750 people are being housed temporarily in sports centres, according to emergency services, while some residents have already been allowed to return to their properties. At this time of year, Spain is also having to battle drought and Sunday saw several areas classed as being at maximum risk of fire, including the

Andalusian province of Huelva, where Donaña Park is situated. Regional councillors said around 2,100 people had been asked to leave their homes and holiday accommodation overnight, although guests at one of the hotels affected - the four-star Solvasa Mazagon Aparthotel - were back the following morning. Psychologist Lucia Perez, 24, who lives in Mazagon, told how she saw people running along the beach with children in their arms screaming for help. The local woman, who had to leave her home because of the fire, told a Spanish newspaper: “What most struck me was seeing people running along the beach asking for help. “I took two children who were very frightened in my car. They told me they had come from an area near the beach which had been evacuated, and that the flames had reached the door of their house.” Strong winds helped to fan the flames overnight, leading to the spread of the fire to Donana Natural Space, which comprises two protected areas, covering more than 300,000 acres. They are the National Park

and the Natural Park both huge attractions for tourists from Spain and abroad. Donaña is a complex mosaic of landscapes, made up of land and water, halfway between the provinces of Huelva, Sevilla and Cadiz. The area, recognised as one of the most important wetlands in Europe, is popular with bird-watchers from around the world as well as families and couples drawn to its fantastic beaches.

As the fire raged, staff at the El Acebuche lynx breeding centre evacuated 14 of the felines living there. But as the flames closed in, there was no time to rescue all the animals, and 13 had to be left behind. By Tuesday morning, more than 200 firefighters had, largely, brought the fire in the Doñana nature reserve surrounding the national park under control, preventing it from spreading into the park itself.

Moroccan nabbed, just before annual Gay Pride festival ONE of three Moroccan terrorists, arrested in Madrid last Wednesday, just days before the arrival of two million people in the city for the Gay Pride festival, celebrated the Manchester Arena bombing by claiming the child victims “got what they deserved”. Suspect Rachid El Omari’s appalling comments came to light as a Spanish judge sent him to prison following a court quiz. Judge Ismael Moreno, in his committal order, said the investigation that led to his arrest during a dawn raid “pointed towards him being in the process of planning a terrorist attack in Madrid”. El Omari, 32, shared a flat near to Madrid’s Atocha train station with two other suspects, his cousin, also 323, and a 37-year-old friend, who were also held in the dawn raids. He is accused of brainwashing the pair and recruiting them to terror group ISIS. The judge added in the jail remand ruling: “His identification with the ideology of the terrorist organisation Daesh led him to justify the terrorist attacks in December in France. “He claimed they got what they deserved, and those who had pledged allegiance to the Caliphate, like him, had the job of defending Islam and converting everyone, as the Koran says those who don’t want to convert to Islam are infidels and have to die. “He said the same things after the terrorist attack in Manchester on 22nd May, when it didn’t seem to worry him that children were killed because, he said, ‘it’s what they deserve and nobody complains about the children of Syria’.” A spokesman for Spain’s National Police, referring to ISIS by its acronym DAESH, said: “Officers have arrested his cousin, living in Madrid, who belonged to the terrorist organisation DAESH and was in an advanced state of radicalisation.”

He added: “The suspect had carried out an exhaustive study and search for official DAESH training material. He went on to say, ‘Here, something worse is going to happen.’ He also showed his interest in weapons, asking, ‘Would you know how to make a bomb’?” It was not made clear immediately how investigators knew about the comments, but they are believed to have been obtained from phonetaps and surveillance of his Internet conversations. The stomach-churning comments were highlighted as part of the reason why the Spanish judge decided to remand El Omari, in prison, pending an ongoing investigation following his appearance at Madrid’s Audiencia Nacional court. In his 14-page ruling the judge, explaining why he was keeping El Omari in custody, said that undercover police had seen him and another of the two suspects visiting emblematic places in Madrid on 11th June. He said the pair had kept watch on the undisclosed locations and resorted to “security measures” during their itinerary. He added: “On 14th June, they were seen in the early hours of the morning, gathering up a poster with photos of women which the other suspect stamped on inside a doorway, while Rachid El Omari looked on. “On 13th June, Rachid El Omari left a note on paper with classic Arabic typeface in his workplace, after his contract ended. “The note had a marked apocalyptic tone and

could be translated as: ‘Jihad Dominion today returns to Paradise’.” Video footage released by Spanish police showed two of the three terror suspects being arrested in crash helmets outside their flat. Twenty-two people were killed in the terror attack in Manchester on 22nd May, when the suicide bomber targeted crowds at an Ariana Grande show. Officers said at the time that they had seized material, including a manual for suicide bombers belonging to the main suspect. They said of El Omari, although he was not named at the time: “He had an extremely dangerous profile, coinciding with those of the terrorists recently involved in attacks in the United Kingdom and France, and was considered an obvious threat to national security.” Twenty-three adults and children were killed, including Salman Abedi, when he detonated his rucksack nail-bomb in the foyer of Manchester Arena after the Ariana Grande concert. Another 119 people were injured, 23 critically. The youngest fatality was Saffie Roussos, who was just eight years old. Chris Upton, headteacher at Tarleton Community primary school, near Preston, Lancashire, where she was a pupil, described her as “simply a beautiful little girl in every aspect of the word”. In a tribute he added after she was named as one of the victims: “She was loved by everyone, and her warmth and kindness will be remembered fondly.”

The joy of pets ANIMALS can be some of the best teachers in life, if you simply pay attention to the way they live, love, and interact with the world around them. They possess an incredibly grounding energy that: • Teaches us how to stay present • Provides unconditional love • Heals hearts and souls This is the reason why therapy dogs, cats, rabbits and other creatures have become so popular in hospitals, long-term living facilities and prisons. These compassionate animals provide love and affection to those who need it most. They bring joy into lonely hearts, comfort the sick, and offer physical contact to people who otherwise receive little or no touch. If you’ve ever been fortunate enough to live with a dog, you know how they make you feel - like you’re the centre of the universe. Who else is going to greet you with such unbridled joy - tail wagging, turning in frantic circles, howling in excitement - when you come home from work? Our pets are so much more than our best friends; they’re members of our families and, for many people, something with whom they share the strongest connection. The animalhuman bond is profoundly powerful, and research is finally proving it. Improved physical and mental health Pets can lower blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol levels. A recent study found that even the simple act of watching fish swim in an aquarium can lower blood pressure and the heart rate, and reduce stress. Pets provide companionship that can help combat feelings of loneliness. Increased exercise Most dogs need to be walked twice a day. This increased activity not only improves your physical health, but also combats depression and makes you happier.

Keeping optimistic! We have puppies!

WE always have so many sad cases of neglect and cruelty that come into the refuge on a daily basis, but, sometimes, when there seems no chance of a dog finding a new home, we see a ray of hope, and kind, loving owners adopt their chosen animal. One such dog has spent the last 18 months in the refuge. Through no fault of his own, and abandoned on the street by some uncaring person, he has been very lucky and is now with his new owner. Xavi, is a beautiful-natured, five-year-old rottweiler. He has been adopted by John Gildersleeves, a retired police officer who has recently moved to the island.

John has always had a love of animals from an early age, and has decided he now has the time and space to give this dog a special home. Unfortunately, Xavi is epileptic, so it's very important that he has his daily medication. We wish them both much happiness together in the future. We would like to remind anyone who is thinking of rescuing a classified dangerous breed that all licences and procedures must be in place before the dog is allowed to leave our refuge. 100 months of ultralow UK interest rates

By Paul Montague at blevins Franks

5th June 2017 was a notable anniversary for the Bank of England and British savers, marking 100 months since the Sterling interest rate was cut to the historic low of 0.5%.

It has also been 10 years since we saw a UK interest rate hike. The last time the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee raised its rate was in May 2007, from 5.25% to 5.5%. Then the financial crisis hit and rates kept falling until they reached 0.5% in March 2009. They remained frozen for years until last summer when the bank rate was cut to 0.25% in the wake of the Brexit referendum. The last time rates were kept low for so long was around the Second World War. Then the rate was held at 2% (which actually sounds good today!) from 1939 to 1951. With Brexit around the corner, and the negotiations

likely to be challenging for the UK economy, few would be surprised if we hit another anniversary, this time 10 years of 0.5% or lower rates. While businesses and borrowers have benefited from low rates, it has been detrimental for savers. In March 2016, Hargreaves Lansdown calculated that seven years of record low rates and quantitative easing resulted in savers losing out on £160 billion – an average of £6,000 for every household. The firm observed that while the monetary policy had

supported strong increases in share, bond and property prices, it had “annihilated” returns on cash. In contrast, the FTSE 100 index has increased 109% over the eight years since interest rates were cut to 0.5%, rising from 3530 on 5th March 2009 to 7374 on 5th March 2017. The situation is actually getting worse for UK savers as inflation is rising, meaning savers are earning negative rates of return. The UK’s Consumer Price Index was 2.7% in May.

The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) warned that inflation will hit 3.5% by the end of the year, before falling back, while ultra-low interest rates will remain in place for another two years, until the UK has exited the EU. After its May monetary policy meeting, BoE governor Mark Carney commented that “this is going to be a more challenging time for British households”. Real income growth will be negative and wages will not keep up with prices. It is not all bad news. The Bank expects the slowdown in economic growth and rise in inflation to be temporary, and that the next three years will see wages recover and a slow but steady economic growth. It indicated that, if the economy lives up to the forecasts and Brexit talks go well, it would be in a position to raise interest rates from 0.25%. This is, however, based on the assumption that “the adjustment to the

UK’s new relationship with the EU is smooth”. Speaking on 20th June, Mr Carney repeated that this “this was not yet the time” to hike interest rates. He explained that “mixed signals” from spending and business investment as well as subdued inflationary pressures and “anaemic wage growth” meant now was not the time to adjust rates. This is a good time to review how you structure your finances and consider alternative options for investing. A professional adviser can help you establish the savings and investment strategy that suits you best. They should start by taking an objective analysis of your risk appetite, and then build a well-diversified portfolio to suit your personal circumstances, aims, time horizon and risk profile. *Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com

To progress the groups must impress the panel of musical judges: the nation’s favourite choirmaster Gareth Malone, former choirgirl turned international recording artist Kelis, and this week’s superstar guest judge. The programme opens with an epic musical mash-up, arranged by the Series Musical Director Deke Sharon, who is the Musical Director on the Pitch Perfect movies. Groups then go head to head in a series of knock-out choral challenges. First they will each perform their showstopper before battling it out with their opponent in a themed riff-off. The judges will then decide which group goes through to the Solo Battles later on. At the end of the programme only two groups will remain where they must face the ultimate sing-off - the Final Battle. Here they share the same song, before the superstar guest judge joins in with the group the judges have chosen to go through to the live Grand Final.

Love your Garden

Wednesday 5th July, ITV1, 20.00

Alan Titchmarsh and the team head to Manchester to turn a concrete patch of dismal cracked pavers and hard edges in to a beautiful classic cottage garden. The transformation is for Salford born identical twins Rita and Betty Mills (87). The twins have lived together in Salford for all of their lives, and since surviving some of the worst WWII bombings this country has seen, as lifelong parishioners of Salford Cathedral, they have never wavered in devoting their lives to helping others.

It was their friends and family from the Cathedral that got in touch with the programme. They felt that when the sisters moved to their new bungalow for health reasons – the one thing they really deserved and desperately needed was an outdoor space on their doorstep – to match their own outgoing and sunny personalities. Alan believes this was the worst gardens he’d ever seen in the series and therefore, couldn’t resist the challenge. He and the team share all the tips and tricks that will help you turn even the most modest of urban yards into a cottage style retreat.

Amazing Animal Births

- ITV1, 20.00

In this new six-part series, zoologist Lucy Cooke will be witnessing the miracle of life as she sees first-hand the incredible bond between a mother and her offspring - that extraordinary moment when a little baby comes into a huge world. From alligators, alpacas and gorillas, to guinea pigs and lions, Lucy will be there as these animal babies embark on their amazing new adventures. In this episode, Lucy Cooke heads to an Alpaca farm where she helps with some complicated deliveries, and she meets the woman who has over 300 guinea pigs and our cameras capture the latest new arrivals being born.

Killer Women with Piers Morgan ITV1, 21:00

This week Piers Morgan travels to Ocala in Florida to meet Jennifer Mee – once famous across the world as The Hiccup Girl, and now notorious as a murderer serving life in prison without the

possibility of Parole. One crucial question drives Piers’ investigation into the case: should Jennifer – who was only 19 at the time of the murder, be kept in prison for the rest of her life even though she did not pull the trigger that killed the innocent victim, nor was at the scene when the bullets were fired? Today, the Jennifer that Piers meets is no longer that naive teen. In a fascinating interview, Piers asks Jennifer to take responsibility for her part in the death of the young man she lured to a dark alleyway where she knew her friends were waiting to rob him. Under Florida law, because Jennifer set him up, she is as culpable as the shooter.

Take care of your kidneys By Emma

from Motorworld

Car fines, which may be imposed WE all know that we can be fined for driving at excessive speeds or too slowly on a motorway, for overtaking when it is not permitted, crossing a solid white line … the list goes on and on. But there are fines that can be incurred when you are not even in your car, or it isn’t moving. In this issue, we are going to point out some of these potential hazards, of which readers may not be aware. The most obvious fines would be for parking in places where it’s forbidden, for example a “Zona de Carga y Descarga” (loading and unloading areas) outside of the permitted hours. Also, for parking in a disabled space when not a disabled driver, or a disabled passenger isn’t present, parking on a yellow line or in a yellow zig-zag box, in front of a “Vado Permanente”, to name but a few. You can be fined for washing your car on a public highway, and carrying out repairs or using the services of a “mobile mechanic”;

most people are unaware that these are illegal. These fines are not high, but they do exist and can be imposed by the police. Mainly, they are set out by the local ayuntamientos (town halls). Water, oil and other deposits can affect the roads’ surfaces, and become a potential risk to other road users. There are environmental issues with these types of activities, and that is why carwash facilities and garages are required to have, and adhere to, complex recycling and draining systems. Items such as waste oil or contaminated products have to be disposed of correctly, in a safe and environmentallyfriendly method, and in line with the laws, incurring a fee for their safe disposal. Oddly enough, having a clean car can mean that you avoid a fine, because there is one in place for having a dirty car, even if it’s not going to move; the lights, reflectors and number plates must be kept clean and clearly visible, as must

the windows. A fine for displaying a number plate in poor or dirty condition, which detracts from the visibility, may result in a fine of 80 euros. Fines can also be incurred at filling stations. Apart from the most obvious one, ie not smoking when refuelling, or lighting a match, there are also others. A 200-euro fine can be incurred for refuelling with your lights or the radio on, the engine running, or using a mobile phone. These activities may also lead to a loss of three points from your licence. Some other lesser known things that can result in a fine, even if the car is not moving, are: not wearing a highvisibility jacket (when out of the car at the scene of an accident or incident), not placing your warning triangles in the correct position, and creating excessive noise (revving engines, using the horn inappropriately). The list is not exhaustive, but there is one common aim, and that is to improve safety. So, you have been warned!

THE main role of your kidneys is to filter your bloodstream and remove toxins, waste, dead cells and excess water. Once properly filtered, waste leaves the body in your urine. Your input of fluids affects your output, that’s why urine tests are the most common way doctors diagnose kidney injuries, damage or diseases. Not drinking enough water You’ve probably heard it enough times by now - drink more water! It’s always been known that dehydration correlates to low kidney function, and, until recently, it was thought that rehydrating would fully restore it. But new research suggests that recurring dehydration can lead to chronic kidney disease. Picking the right fluids Knowing that dehydration hurts your kidneys, you may be tempted to turn to soft drinks as a source of more fluids. Unfortunately, drinking fructose/glucose-rich fizzy drinks, and the additives in diet drinks, can actually damage your kidneys. Studies also showed that patients who consumed naturally-sweetened soft drinks showed an increased risk of chronic kidney disease. Smoking Extensive studies have confirmed that using cigarettes and other products, such as smokeless tobacco, reduce kidney function. Over-the-counter medications Some OTC drugs have been linked to kidney damage, such as aspirin, acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Extreme exercise Surprisingly, extreme exercise habits can cause severe kidney

Madrid doze zone MANY people associate Spain with siestas, but Spaniards have been slow to turn this habit into a profit. Japan, Argentina and Belgium are far ahead on this issue, explains María Estrella Jorro de Inza, owner of Siesta and Go, Spain’s very first business offering customers some down-time in between

activities. Located in Madrid’s AZCA business area, which is filled with offices, Siesta and Go hopes to become a refuge for local workers seeking a quiet place to rest, read, or take a nap. In Argentina and Belgium, these places are known as “siestodromes” and “nap bars.” But De Inza

discovered the business model in Japan. “On a trip we took, we realised that there were many possibilities: rest centres for women and for men, and mixed options,” she said. She decided to import the idea. For 20 euros, a client gets three hours to rest in their own, personal space. It is also possible to

pay by the minute, and prices vary, depending on what one wants: a couch (1.50 euros for 30 minutes), a bunk bed (2 euros for 30 minutes) or a private room (3 euros for 30 minutes). “Once a customer’s entrance is registered in our computer system, there’s a five-minute courtesy period to let them get

damage. It’s a good idea to speak with your medical practitioner about the safety of your fitness habits. Poor sleep A study of middle-aged people found that those who slept less than six hours a night, or more than ten hours (including naps), experienced renal hyperfiltration, an early warning sign of kidney disease Too much protein Renal hyperfiltration can also be caused by a high-protein diet, especially after meat-heavy meals. Remember, a key factor in any health plan is moderation. Too much sugar Just like drinking your sugar in the form of soda, eating a high-sugar diet can lead to the same problems. Stay away from too many sweets, chocolate and desserts, for your kidneys’ sakes. Magnesium deficiency Magnesium has many roles to play in your body’s proper functioning. A deficiency can cause kidney stones. Kidney-health myth Some people think that drinking coffee hurts your kidneys. According to sources, this has been disproven. A 2017 study confirmed that there was no association between coffee consumption and a risk of kidney disease How to have healthy kidneys The number-one guideline for healthy kidneys is moderation! Since your kidneys’ primary function is to filter your blood of toxins and waste, you can help them by keeping the amount of waste and toxins low.

comfortable,” explains the owner. The establishment offers slippers and shirts for those who really want to feel at home. There are no shrill alarm clocks here, and an employee will gently wake up the customer at the agreed time. The establishment also offers coffee, newspapers and an internet connection. “Our average customer is 30-45 years old,” says Johan Grillo, the manager, who notes

that they get as many men as women coming through the doors. According to the owner, customers tend to return, again and again. The place has 19 beds, although they have only been full once. “We’re getting there slowly,” she says. As to whether Spaniards really do nap or not, the research is patchy. A 2009 study found that just 16.2% of people in the country take a nap everyday, while 58.6% never do so.

A word in your ear

By Carl pattison from Robot

YOUR salon, our place of work; you either take it as an experience, or it’s just something to “get out of the way”. You dread going, or you love to be there; we all have our own opinions. Salons were created to add professionalism to what was once a “done-at-home craft”, making hairdressing the true profession it is today. Often slated as not being a proper job, and something you did if you couldn’t do anything else, hairdressing now ranks as one of the most-reputable

businesses, earning billions a year around the world. We, as salons, can only advance our field of work with your support; regular clients keep us busy and our doors open. There’s so much competition out there, with undercutting and “sweatshop - style” salons, that it’s hard, sometimes, to keep a standard, when many of those around are going down the cheap -and- cheerful route. That’s fine if that’s

what you want from your haircut/colour, and if having it done is just another chore on your list. But I, and many other salon owners, think otherwise. Your hair appointment in the salon is “your” time; a moment to enjoy and to leave feeling new again. Robot Hair is still going strong, thanks to all our faithful clients. Support your salon and hold this thought: “What would happen if you lost us?”

Ear candy by Carl Pattison

YOU’RE not fully dressed without them; you feel naked without some; EARRINGS really do make a statement. And, boy, are they at the forefront of fashion at the moment. But forget studs or anything dainty; statement earrings are hot, and the bigger the better. Once seen as a “cheap” look, large earrings can really set off an outfit, giving it a whole new concept. If you’re going to take this up, then opt for beaded-Boho or tribal feathers; chains and long, single strands are sooooo much in the stores at the moment. Opulent stones and too much bling are the looks to be seen in. Even during the day, vintage pieces combine with a modern twist to really make you stand out.

Don’t add in other jewellery if you’re wearing statement earrings; maybe a matching fashion ring, but stay away from necklaces, as it could look too much. Your ears should be the centre of attention this summer, so, hop on the bandwagon, and search out your jaw-dropping Ear Candy.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: Biancos, Safari Centre, Playa de Las Americas

Modern Italian at its finest LOCATED in the heart of the Golden Mile in Playa de Las Americas, you´ll discover one of Tenerife’s coolest, chicest restaurants. Positioned just a stone’s throw away from some of the island’s finest beaches, a visit to Bianco is guaranteed to lift your spirits! As one of the top names in contemporary dining, you will hear Bianco recommended all across Tenerife. It has something to please everyone. From families and couples, to business lunches and nights out, everyone will enjoy what Bianco has to offer. From the friendly greeting at the door, to the sleek, white, contemporary interior, it’s easy to see why, with over 200 seats available, this restaurant is still fullybooked most nights. The head chef takes inspiration from the depths of Italy, and marries it with his training in the worldfamous Dorchester to create traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist. Bianco also offers a tempting selection of creative meat and fish dishes, including top-quality steaks, provided by Venture Restaurants’ very own butcher, Meat Boutique. We decided to try Bianco for a relaxing, girly lunch; Jenny T from the Oasis Fm’s Breakfast Show, myself and little Sofia (6). We were warmly greeted and decided on a shady terrace table, overlooking the Golden Mile. After a

quick look at the menu, we decided to try some of the newer dishes, along with a traditional pasta dish for Sofia. For starters, we had the Bresaola Rolls, slices of prime, cured fillet steak, wrapped around fresh rocket and dressed with lemon and red onion shavings, served on large toasted croutons. The dish was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked, with rich, smokey, cured steak with a peppery flavour from the rocket. It was light, fresh and delicious! We followed this with the Spiced King Prawn and Red Pepper Pizza. It was perfectly cooked – thin, crispy Italian pizza base, topped with rich tomato sauce, followed by beautiful, succulent prawns; then creeps in the chilli flavour and the red pepper to add a nice, cooling freshness. Next, we got stuck into the Italian Lemon and Herb Chicken Breast stuffed with Buffalo mozzarella and York ham. The chicken was very tender and encased in a crispy herb breadcrumb. And when you cut into it, the mozarella oozes out and mixes with a pesto-style sauce. The dish, packed full of flavours that all worked in harmony together, was served with Bianco-style chips. My dish of the day, and one of the favourites of the chef, was the Fillet of Salmon Cioppino: pan-fried fillet, gently poached in a light

cherry tomato broth with flaked lobster and king prawns, served with garlicinfused bruschetta. This dish is a feast for the eyes, and the taste buds! The salmon was cooked to perfection, moist and flaky. The prawns and lobster add another dimension to the dish, and it’s all brought together with the subtle, cherry-tomato broth. We could have easily stopped there, all three of us full to bursting, a 10 out of 10, and a heart on my notes for the Pasta Napolitana from Sofia. But there is something at Bianco you just cannot miss, and that’s the desserts, in particular for Jenny, who talks more about chocolate

than anyone I know! We decided on the Chocolate fondant. When it arrived, everyone’s eyes lit up … a beautiful little fondant with coconut ice-cream and garnished with fresh cream, fruit and mint. My favourite part was cracking open the fondant and watching the velvety centre run out to create a little puddle of chocolate heaven. This rich, deep and indulgent fondant, is packed full of chocolaty goodness and works well with the fresh coconut ice-cream. I think Jenny may be making

a weekly trip to Bianco for her chocolate fix after this, and this quote says it all: “I could have popped a button open and quite easily demolished another one.” Totally relaxed and stuffed to the brim, we sat and soaked up the Bianco atmosphere, while just managing to find room for one of their tasty cocktails to finish off! Topped with the friendly and professional service, for which the Venture Restaurants team are known, you will be sure to make any meal special with a visit to Bianco!

A good night’s sleep By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic

A GOOD night’s sleep is more important than most people realise. The health benefits are endless, and so are the negatives of not getting enough. This is quite relevant to me at the moment; with this heat - and a newborn baby the lack of sleep is not letting me think of much else! So, having a nice, comfortable bed and mattress to sleep on is essential, but choosing a mattress isn’t always easy. The thing to consider when buying a new mattress is the support. It should support your spine, whether you are lying on your back, or your side. Try them out in the shop, ask for a pillow and lay how you would at home. Going in a shop and sitting on the mattress does not tell you how comfortable it is. There are various types of mattresses, and price ranges. Here are some of the most common varieties: Open coil This is a sprung mattress made from one, continuous wire. They can offer different levels of firmness, and are in the more economical range. Pocket sprung This is a higher-quality, sprung mattress. Pocket sprung means that each spring is individually packed in its own pocket, keeping the mattress firm, and adapting to each person’s weight. Memory foam This is a popular choice of material; very comfortable as it moulds to the body, evenly distributing body weight. However, I don’t think there is any need for a complete

memory-foam mattress; a combination of pocket sprung and memory foam is perfect. Having the memory foam as the top layer gives you the best of both worlds. This combination is called a hybrid mattress. Bed linen also makes a great difference, and there is nothing better than good-quality

sheets, especially in this heat. I recommend Egyptian cotton to keep you cool and comfortable. Then, of course, comes the dressing of the bed. There is nothing more attractive and eye-catching than a well-dressed bed! I know some people can disagree, and find

nothing more irritating than having to throw all the cushions off at bed time, but I think it’s a small price to pay. Comfort may be the priority, but the fun bit is to make it look luxurious by adding layers with throws, runners, different textures and colours, and loose cushions … bliss!

A big bonus for home-sellers HOUSE prices in the UK should rise rapidly during the next four years as the economy becomes much healthier following Brexit, according to telling new figures, and values will rise almost 25% by 2021. That’s an average increase of £52,000 as consumerconfidence in the property market there remains solid. The average cost of a house across the whole of 2017 is expected to be some £220,000 a £9,000 improvement against last year’s figure, according to the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr). By 2021, the average home should be worth around £272,000, says its report, which is a £52,000 increase compared with today’s price, and a rise of 23.6%. Kay Daniel Neufeld, a Cebr economist and main author of the report, said: “Already, towards the end of 2016, indicators pointed to a stabilisation in the housing market, and it’s a trend that has continued in the first months of 2017. “Transaction numbers are slowly recovering from the introduction of a stamp-duty surcharge on second homes in April 2016, which has led to considerable distortions

in the market.” He added: “Mortgage approvals are nearing post-crisis heights, boosted by low interest rates and favourable borrowing conditions.” Cebr expects property values to climb at a slower pace over the next couple of years as Brexit negotiations progress, with annual increases below 5%. This compares with a 7.5%, year-on-year, increase in house prices recorded in 2016. And it expects UK property prices to grow by around 4.4% during 2017, which is the slowest pace experienced since 2013. But from 2019, growth is expected to pick up, and an annual increase of 5.7% has been predicted for that year, with increases of around 6% in 2020 and 2021. Cebr says a shortage of housing will continue to help push house prices upwards. And at the top end of the market, those looking to sell should benefit from a pickup in demand from foreign property investors, because of sterling’s low value, adds the report. The data proves the resilience of the post-Brexit property market, despite political turmoil and higher Stamp Duty bills, say experts.

Alex Gosling, head of online estate agents HouseSimple. com, has predicted even further price rises in the housing market. “The UK property market seems to be Brexit-proof,” he said. “It has coped remarkably well with the economic turmoil in the months following the vote to leave the EU. “Price growth has eased a little, but not to the degree that people were expecting. Now that Article 50 has been invoked, we could see a short period of low growth. But there is no reason to face the next few months with fear and trepidation.” He added: “House prices are still being supported by a lack of property stock, and, although buyers are taking longer before committing, any reservations about making a purchase may ease. “It wouldn’t be at all surprising if house-price growth beats expectations this year.” Shaun Church, director at mortgage brokers Private Finance, added: “Homeowners will be thrilled to hear that house-price growth isn’t expected to be slowed down by Brexit, particularly as growth is relatively subdued at the moment, compared with recent years.

“Rising property prices mean home-owners can remortgage to a more affordable deal as they fall into a lower loan-to-value (LTV) bracket; or they can withdraw cash from their properties to be used for things like home improvements. “Those who decide to sell will also see a bigger return on their original investment. And, as property is most people’s biggest asset, this can be a significant part of financial planning for retirement.” He added: “Retirees, who see the value of their property rise, could receive a significant bonus to their

retirement funds by selling up or downsizing. “It’s a good sign that consumer demand for housing will keep the wheels of the property market turning, despite the uncertainty of Brexit.” Figures for the first quarter of this year in the UK suggest the property market is moving along at a steady pace. Mortgage-approval numbers, a leading indicator for property transactions, have recovered from their mid-2016 low and remain on a stable level, just under 70,000 per month. This is very close to the high of 74,000 seen in early 2014.

With all guns blazing… By Kirk Readings

KGB agents, Iranian Police force, Spanish Militant Intelligence Unit, Israeli Desert Commandos, and, for all they knew, the Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly team could have been MI5 personnel! I’m not, perhaps, entirely accurate with my assumption of their job roles, but forgive me for getting carried away. It’s difficult not to be when suited, head-to-toe in camouflage, carrying an incredibly life-like semiautomatic weapon and, I believe, the correct term is “strafing” (or skulking if you come from parts of the world where teens hang around alleys), around 2000sq/m of urban-warfare surroundings. I speak, of course, of AirSoft World Tactical Centre, nestled in the industrial underbelly of Las Chafiras. This epic recreation, of every young gamer’s dream scenario, is brought to life in an environment as appealing to your everyday radio presenter as it is to a hardened, experienced, military veteran. Now, it is certainly only as serious as you make it, and not for a minute would I suggest whooping and hollering “West Wales Massive” as if running around a 21st century battlefield. This is also, perhaps, frowned upon by the bemused monitors and marshalls. It is however, completely acceptable here, as long as you’re prepared to find yourself peppered with small ball-bearings by your “eagerto-fire” enemy for the day. The trudge back to the “safe” zone is a reminder that, maybe in the next game, you should act with caution and

attempt to assist your team in returning to the canteen area in one piece. That feeling is short-lived, however, as the adrenaline charges through your veins, and, with the sound of the heavy breath in your mask, and the dull but rapid thud of your heart in your chest, it delivers another illegible battle cry, and a flurry of mistimed, poorly-aimed attempts of victory. It’s at this stage that you

realise it makes sense to return to normality for 10 minutes, and let the guys, dripping in different military dress, head in and rescue that poor flag you left unattended, during your rush-of-blood-tothe-head moments. It provides an excellent opportunity to gather one´s thoughts, and aims, in the shooting range, or head into the shop next door to witness a plethora of weapons, clothing and close-combat items, all available for purchase. I must stress that these colt pistols, high-powered sniper rifles, and all in between, are NOT firearms in the traditional sense but, in effect, air pistols. That said, precaution is advised as I imagine any law-enforcement agent in any country would shoot first and ask second if you were to wave one of these about. That’s because they are incredibly accurate in detail to the “real thing”. In short, this entire experience has opened my eyes to another weapon in the armoury of Tenerife, and its battle to become the No.1 destination for holiday-makers the world over. If you fancy something a little different, give this a try … by offering a service in which you can enter as many

15-minute games as you like throughout the day, and there’s a facility to bring your own food and drink. And, with a minimum age of eight years old, the AirSoft Tactical Warfare Centre is a

reat value day out for the entire family. If you’re serious about winning, however, don’t take over-excited, attention-seeking, 31-yearold Welshmen. They make terrible team-mates!

Got in touch and popped down for a few hours; sadly couldn’t play longer as we had other things booked to do, but the site and staff were fantastic. If you are a vacationing airsofter, looking for a fix, this is the place for you - Chris Perrin 14th April: Boys loved it, made very welcome, will be back, highly-recommended - Alan Ward 11th June: Absolutely awesome. As a holidaymaker, we were welcomed with open arms and spent most of the day playing with people we’d never seen before, as if we’d known them for years. Definitely worth a visit, and most definitely going back - Sebastian Swinkels

Wheelchair Basketball

All set for Final push THE first wheelchair tipped forward after a full-on charge, just a few minutes into the first quarter of the Israel v Great Britain clash in the men’s competition at these European Championships in Adeje. The Israel player just flipped back up on his wheels, using the momentum of his body, and the game carried on. It was typical of the skill, commitment and dedication of all competitors, five each on court at any time. Great Britain, who arrived as reigning champions from the last competition in Worcester two years ago, gradually pulled ahead of a resilient Israel team, who trailed just 34-28 at the halfway mark. The two biggest players, GB’s Mark Fosbrook and Israeli Dotan Mishar, featured some powerful clashes, as the circular, protecting bars, at the base of the specially-built chairs, collided.

Just as common was the sound of friendly little passing taps as an acknowledgement of respect and sportsmanship between players, following good defensive or attacking plays. GB triumphed 86-43, a good start to add to their comfortable win over Sweden, also in the opening stages. Their head coach, Haj Bania, was relishing the challenge after overseeing his male squad’s tournament wins in Poland and Worcester in recent weeks. “This is another vital part of our build-up,” he said. “Greg Warburton has joined us straight from Toronto, where he captained our World Junior Championshipwinning squad. “This tournament in Adeje is another big step on the road to the 2018 World Championships in Hamburg, but we expect tough opposition from Germany,

Spain, and France.” Back on the court, it was the ladies’ turn, with Turkey taking on Holland, and the smaller Turkish players found themselves really up against it. Their opponents looked better-prepared, from their tactical build-ups in a circle around their coach before each quarter, to their well-laden table of stamina products - and their greater variety of line and tactical changes. The final score of 81-17 was punishing, but Turkey were up for the battle all the way

through to the last of the 10-minute quarters. Heat was a big factor for the players as Tenerife sweltered, and, even with the doors wide open at both sports halls, water was everybody’s best friend. The Paralympics’ success has increased the profile of basketball’s wheelchair version, but the big professional leagues are in Germany, France, and Spain. And many of the contestants in the men’s and women’s competition play for teams in those countries. These Championships had

small daytime crowds to start with, but several countries were being filmed for their sports channels. The big finals take place today (Friday), and the buzz from the qualifying rounds should be reflected in increased attendances. Germany meet Holland in the ladies’ final at 4pm, and Great Britain meet Turkey in the men’s final at 6.30pm after seeing off Holland. Both games are at Adeje’s Las Torres sports hall, with tickets on the door from three euros.

Mighty Mac’s 104 way IT was no Pas O Nadas for Scruffy Macs as they posted a 7-1 victory against the El Ritual boys, who claimed just five legs. Congratulations to Daniel and Steve, who made winning debuts for the away team. Despite his four 140s, James should have made it a whitewash, but the finishing was not up to his usual standard. Treble 1, treble 17 and bull were the three darts which gave Dave Mac a 104 finish for Phoenix bar at Bar 180 A. Not a lot of players would have gone that way, but Mac’s method, however, helped secure a 6-2 win for the visitors. Colin Macrae, Head of Wingate School, made his debut and was unlucky not to secure a win, but star of the night was Nikki, who threw some amazing darts in a close singles game, and then teamed up with Wayne to win the doubles. Spear Chuckers kept up their good form, and Rudi was the main man in a 7-1 win against luckless Ourplace Playboys. But Gaffers conceded an 8-0 walkover to Palms Pool Bar after thinking, mistakenly, that they had a free week. Sundowners’ trip to Waterfall saw them come away with their

first points of the season in a 4-4 draw, which they would have bettered had they not lost the trebles. In Division 2, a similar result was recorded at Bar Leones as they took the trebles for the draw against a four-man Clouseaus team. Buzzing B’s v Nauta Nomads went down to the wire, with the honours going to the home team, courtesy of a trebles win for a final 5-3 result. It was great to see our treasurer Rob out and about after his recent altercation, and we all wish him a speedy recovery. Legends got back to winning ways with a 7-1 win at the Ourplace Breakaways, which took them back to the summit. Sandys, chasing them all the way, recorded a 7-1 victory at The Red Devils, which saw three perfect darts for Tommy, and, surprisingly, Luc losing his three games. This makes it four out of four wins for Sandys, who are just ahead of Marilyns A, comfortable 6-2 winners against their B team and maintaining their impressive start. In a close encounter, Lady Macs hosted Ourplace Playgirls and suffered a 6-2 reverse. But again, a brilliant time was had by all.

Formula One title race

Hamilton is beaten to the punch by his rival A SEETHING Lewis Hamilton branded his F1 world championship rival Sebastian Vettel a disgrace after the four-time titleholder deliberately drove into him at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix last Sunday. Hamilton, who was won the crown three times, demanded that, if they were to clash, they should do so like “men” outside the car. In other words, “let’s sort it out with our fists!” His Mercedes, which had been leading the race in Baku, was behind the safety car just before the restart when Vettel’s Ferrari hit him from behind. An angry Vettel, believing Hamilton had braked deliberately and sparked the collision, then drew level and swerved into the side of the British driver’s car. Subsequently, he was given a 10-second, stop-go penalty for dangerous driving, but it hardly fitted the crime. And many observers felt he should at least have been disqualified. “Driving alongside and deliberately driving into a driver and getting away scot free pretty much - he still came away with fourth - I think that’s a disgrace,” said Hamilton. “I think he disgraced himself today, to be honest.”

Hamilton, bidding for his fourth crown and finishing one place behind him, added: “Driving dangerously can put another driver at risk. Luckily, we were going slow, but if we were going fast, it could have been a lot worse. “Imagine all the young kids who are watching Formula One today and see that kind of behaviour from a four-time world champion. I think that says it all.” Vettel insisted he had not been at fault, despite the stewards’ punishment. “It was quite obvious,” said the German driver. “I didn’t run into the back of him on purpose. I damaged my wing, and I think he had a little bit of damage as well. Nothing that would have impacted on the race. “It’s just not the way to do it. I think it was very clear. In the end, we’re racing as men. I don’t have a radio to him. If I get a penalty, then we should both get a penalty.” He said he had not intended to hit Hamilton when he drew alongside him. “We had a little contact, but I drove alongside him mostly to raise my hand,” he insisted. “I did not give him the finger. I just wanted to tell him, because I can’t literally talk to him, that what he did was not right.”

CD Tenerife: Promotion Play-Off

By Colin Kirby

Promotion dream ends in heartache Getafe 3 CD Tenerife 1 (Promotion play-off final, 2nd leg. Getafe win 3-2 on aggregate) EVERY Tenerife player will have his own ifs and buts about how the club could have clinched promotion, and so will every one of their marvellous fans. Despite a proud, fighting display, they came up just a little short in the final reckoning at Getafe. The pride among the 1,200 travelling fans, for an uplifting season of rebirth, was echoed across bars, restaurants and homes in Tenerife, and in a few, farflung pockets of blue-andwhite around the globe. So much was achieved this season, and, with valuable lessons learned, the platform is there for a stronger assault next term. Tenerife North airport was mobbed for the return of the shattered players, and the Cabildo held a special reception for the squad, to reflect the pride they have instilled in all. Football’s changing moods can be cruel because Getafe, poor in Santa Cruz during their 1-0 defeat, were transformed in their home leg. Amath could have scored the killer goal for Tenerife in the first minutes, but he missed a good chance, possibly waiting for an offside call that never came. Chulli, linked as a possible signing for Tenerife last season, was instrumental in the wave unleashed by Getafe. Their pressure won a corner after eight minutes, and, from a head-down, Faurlino pounced to score as the Tenerife defence hesitated. A few minutes later it was 2-0, a Chulli cut-back finding Pacheco, who powered the ball into the bottom corner. But Tenerife, who looked shell-shocked, recovered well and quickly, Gaku squaring the ball and Choco sliding in to poke it in the net. It was turning into quite a thriller, with Getafe still needing another goal to get their noses in front. And it came after a trademark, super-save from keeper Dani Hernandez.

The ball popped out but wasn’t cleared by his defence, and Pacheco grabbed his chance to put the home side in the driving seat.

The second half was a war of attrition. Getafe employed time-wasting tactics and the ref was weak. But it was down to Tenerife to break their resistance, which was a call too far. Dani came to the rescue again as Pacheco missed his hat-trick chance, and Tayron took over from Suso in the hunt for that vital goal. Amath kept nagging away at

Getafe, and two more of his chances were agonisingly close, the second from a clever long-ball, launched by Vitolo. Amazingly, the ref added on six minutes’ injurytime, which offered further openings for both sides. Amath desperately wanted to be the saviour in what was probably his last game for Tenerife before returning to loan club Atletico Madrid. But he just couldn’t create

that fairy-tale ending. In fact, Alvaro should have made it 4-1 at the death, only to miss an easy chance. Tenerife players looked totally drained at the final whistle, their mammoth journey etched on faces. Yet they have barely two weeks to recharge their batteries before training starts, on 17th July. Most of the squad, and coach Pep Marti, have signed improved contracts,

but there is some hard negotiating to be done to prevent the many La Liga admirers from tempting away CDT’s jewels, such as Gaku Shibasaki, Jorge Saenz, and Dani Hernandez. A few new faces will be needed, as some fringe players are allowed to leave. But the fans, who can see the club moving forward, are counting down the days to the launch of another promotion campaign.
