Ban and fine for holiday fiddlers Continued from Front The claims were withdrawn just days after it was announced that those making false allegations could face fines, or prison sentences. And TUI, the world’s biggest travel company, which has several hotels in Tenerife, pledges that they will be named on a blacklist, to be distributed to all major holiday companies, so they can impose permanent bans. Nick Longman, UK and Ireland Managing Director of TUI, who said the operation was well underway, confirmed that the 1,800 cases against his firm, all brought by a single law company, had been withdrawn, with other cases expected to follow suit. The action comes just weeks after a British man was arrested in Mallorca. He was put under formal investigation on suspicion of encouraging tourists to make false claims by targeting them outside hotels. Officials said tourists were being advised to buy Calpol medicine, and keep the receipt, to strengthen complaints about stomachbugs and food-poisoning when arriving back in the UK. If successful, families and holiday-makers could be entitled to compensation, worth around £3,000 a head. But Mr Longman has met with Spanish police and fraud investigators in Mallorca to discuss plans to counteract the fraudsters. “We have had a very positive meeting to discuss the unprecedented levels of illness claims,” he said. “We fully support the steps being taken to expose this kind of fraud, and to investigate false or exaggerated cases.” Details of the meeting emerged as a Mallorcan court began a criminal investigation into the cashfor-sickness claims by
tourists, who had stayed at a holiday site on the island, owned by Mac Hotels. Lawyers acting for the hotel group sparked a lengthy police investigation after handing them a dossier of evidence, pointing to the food claims being fake, which was compiled by a team of private detectives. A judge in Mallorca capital Palma has now agreed to launch a judicial investigation, to decide whether holiday-makers behind the claims should face fraud charges. The tourists, as well as those encouraging them to make the claims, could also be charged with unlawful association, if the judge decides there is evidence, pointing to a plot to break the law, involving a group of individuals. A dossier, handed to the court, centres on claims received last year from tourists who had stayed at the three-star Club Mac resort in Puerto Alcudia. It is also believed to include some claims by guests at the three-star Paradiso Garden Hotel, in Playa de Palma. Travel association ABTA says there has been a fourfold increase made by British
tourists since 2013, driven, in part, by ambulance-chasing claims companies. Jet2holidays chief Steve Heapy, who has also warned about the cheats, called on the UK Government to crack down on “food-bug fraudsters”. He added: “We want our customers to have a great holiday, and to continue to enjoy the benefits of allinclusive. But the danger is that these fake holidaypoisoning claims put the allinclusives at risk,” he said. “The sharp rise in the number of sickness claims is costing hoteliers and travel companies dearly, and it’s frustrating when so many are made, a year or more after the holiday has ended. We risk the actions of the dishonest few, spoiling the plans of many British holiday-makers. “My message is simple. No one cares more about you on holiday than us. If you have a problem on holiday, we are there for you, and we take genuine claims very seriously.” A TUI Group spokeswoman confirmed that its representatives had this week met with the Spanish National Police’s specialist
fraud squad, UDEF, to discuss the actions being taken. She said: “The travel advice for Spain has contained a warning for several months about allegedly false and fraudulent claims, leading to potential legal proceedings in the UK or Spain. And that warning is proving accurate. “We are seeing direct action from the Spanish courts, the police and hoteliers. The police, presented with details about hundreds of cases of suspected fraud, have now delivered the results of their investigation to a Palma court.” The spokeswoman added: “Those customers who submitted false or exaggerated claims for food-poisoning against hoteliers in Mallorca during the last year can expect criminal action to be taken.” And Mr Longman stressed: “We remain committed to doing all we can to put a stop to this activity, and protect honest holiday-makers.” TUI said it was unable to offer any more details of the law firm concerned at this stage. But, earlier this week, Mr Longman said his company were concerned at the unprecedented
increase in illness claims. “We have many cases with evidence that there was no illness, or where the symptoms or duration are exaggerated,” he added. “Where we identify fraud, we will consider prosecution - and we will also blacklist customers from taking further holidays with us. It’s been an absolute explosion. “We have seen an enormous 1,400% increase in claims in the last two years. This is clearly a massive issue for us - it’s a massive issue for the industry!” Mr Longman was speaking out, even as a bodybuilder’s compensation claim for food-poisoning unravelled after Facebook pictures showed him enjoying meals on his Turkey break. Burly Leon Roberts, 38, from Alvaston, Derbyshire, demanded compensation from travel company Thomson and his hotel. But, after pictures emerged of him tucking into steaks and sushi, he claimed: “I was ill on the holiday, but I’m willing to drop the claim as I’m currently in a dispute with my ex-partner, and I don’t want the extra stress of it all.” Last month, it emerged that a British couple, accused of making a bogus holidaysickness compensation claim, faced losing their home after the Crete hotel they stayed in launched a £170,000 counter-claim for damaging its reputation. Sean and Caroline Bondarenko claimed against the fivestar Caldera Palace Hotel after saying the resort’s food and drink made them ill. They are now said to be trying to drop their claim, made three years after their one-week stay in October 2013, after the Crete hotel counter-claimed, saying the couple had enjoyed their holiday and “consumed large quantities of alcohol” when they were supposed to have been sick.

South Hospital’s vital CT scanner is in place
THE El Mojon Hospital’s long-awaited CT scanner has finally been installed, to the relief of many residents all over the South of Tenerife. The new, high-resolution device, bought last year for 338,740 euros, will begin
operating this month during the mornings, said Jesus Delgado, Managing Director of Candelaria Hospital, upon which the South Hospital depends. The service will be expanded to afternoons in August, and, by September, it will be operational 24 hours daily. Canarian Government President Fernando Clavijo, ac-
companied by Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, paid a recent visit to the building, now known officially as El Mojon Hospital, to view the new facilities. Clavijo said it was a “highlydemanded” infrastructure and, he emphasised, after recognising the delays the hospital had undergone: “Slowly, but
surely, we have finished it.” Alonso said the CT scanner machine would benefit the hospital by increasing the services on offer, along with the two floors designated to in-patients, a laboratory and a chemotherapy-treatment unit, “which will be ready by the end of this year or the beginning of next year”. Delgado was delighted to

King Felipe’s ‘freedom’ cry
KING Felipe VI has criticised the independence referendum planned by Catalonia, saying it will merely “negate freedom”. The Spanish ruler, addressing parliament on the 40th anniversary of Spain’s first elections, said: “No path taken in our democracy should lead to the breakdown of our co-existence, or to a path that divides Spaniards and breaks the fraternal spirit which unites us all.” He added that the vote, scheduled for 1st October, would only bring insecurity, and would lead to the “negation of freedom”. He also stressed: “Disagreements and differences can be resolved through dialogue and debate.” His advice followed a claim by Catalonia leader Carles Puidgemont that Guardia Civil officers were grilling his party members over the scheduled referendum.
announce that work on the labour and delivery room, and the operating rooms, which had been halted for seven months because of problems with the construction company, was now making progress. He added: “Every facility at the hospital is expected to start operating by the end of 2018, or early in 2019.”
A 28-year-old German man was taken to hospital last Friday night after being stabbed on San Isidro’s main road.
Five are injured in multiple collisions FIVE people, aged between 27 and 36, were injured in a multiple collision on the TF-1, on their way through the Fasnia municipality last Sunday in the direction of Santa Cruz. The crash happened at around 7.30am when two cars collided, blocking the two lanes. Paramedics assisted the four people who had been injured originally: two men, aged 27 and 29, and two women, 27 and 30, all with minor injuries. But even while the emergency services were at the scene, a third car smashed into a road-maintenance vehicle and one of the ambulances, injuring one of the drivers, a 36-year-old man. He suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the University Hospital for further medical care.
Emergency services were notified after the assault, on the TF-64 road, at the town’s roundabout. Paramedics stabilised the victim before transferring him to Hospiten Sur with moderate stab wounds. The Guardia Civil has taken over the investigation.

Socialist group demands a second South runway ADEJE Council is urging Tenerife Cabildo to tell the state to initiate proceedings for work to begin on a second runway for the South Airport as soon as possible.
The Council’s “institutional motion”, proposed by the ruling Socialists, was supported by everyone at its monthly meeting, following the seven-hour airport shutdown after the tyres on a Jet2 Airbus plane burst on landing last week. Those who addressed the meeting stated the importance of a second runway and terminal to the area, and included the provision that the Cabildo offers all necessary assistance to the state to ensure that this becomes a reality. Speakers during the meeting stressed the relevance of the airport as a key infrastructure, not just for transport and mobility within the island, but also
a determining factor in the tourism industry, which is the island’s main economic motor. Adeje’s plea for a second runway echoes that of the Cabildo’s persistent socialist group, PSOE, which again demanded a second runway for Tenerife South, back in February. This is now considered a “historical request” because the party has been demanding the
addition since 1977. The PSOE gave examples of airports like Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona, Alicante and Seville, which are classified in the same category and already have this infrastructure. In a meeting with Tamara Raya, the PSOE’s national deputy for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Senator Olivia Delgado, it was made clear that the Cabildo’s Socialist Group
views it as a “priority” that Tenerife South airport grows, and that the second runway was an island “must”. “Tenerife received more than five million tourists, and the Canary Islands reached 13 million in 2016,” said the representatives. “The forecasts point to a growth in tourism in the coming years.” The PSOE firmly believes that “any initiative involving
increased air-connectivity and mobility is good for Tenerife’s economy”. Raya said that planning and developing policies in this area and carrying out projects “is based on the fact that the Cabildo wants Tenerife to become an interconnection node for longdistance air routes.” She added: “It’s a project in which the second runway for Tenerife South would play a fundamental role.”

Major Apps scam has netted 30bn euros via mobile phones A HUGE money scam, using fraudulent mobile phone Apps, uncovered by the Guardia Civil, has led to seven arrests following 11 raids on homes and trade premises.
Network operators raised the alarm when they noticed a high level of calls made by millions of customers to premium-rate numbers, and mainly at unusual times. The Guardia launched “Operation Rikati”, which revealed rapidly that the calls had been made during the night, when the mobile phone owner would not have realised - especially as the App switched off the phone, or placed it in silent mode while ringing the numbers. And some of the calls went on for up to 30 minutes. To convince users to download the App, the fraudsters used the names and logos of real companies, or fake adverts saying, ‘click here for the best tricks to avoid hair loss’ or ‘for the best porn videos’. When users did so, the bogus App installed itself automatically. Where the programme pretended to be a “real” company, it was advertised on social media as being free of charge to download. Automatically, the applica-
tion rang numbers beginning in 803, which are top-rate tariff, or sent text messages to premium-rate numbers. If the Apps raised suspicion, they were deactivated at source and relaunched under another name, which enabled them to avoid scrutiny by mobile operators. Lists of premium-rate numbers, for calling or sending messages, were acquired from a Barcelona telecommunications operator, whose owner was among the seven arrested. Although the list contained just 20-or-so numbers, this was enough to generate over 21 million premium-rate text messages, each of which saw the mobile-phone owner charged around 1.50 euros. With between 20-25 numbers called, or messages sent per month, each user found that his or her bill went up by around 30 euros. The owners tended not to report the matter, because the additional sum was so low that it could just have been the result of making extra calls, or using additional data, without remembering. Also, with operators having applied price hikes under investigation by consumerprotection groups as possibly being abusive and in breach of contract, many affected phone owners
simply assumed this was why their bills had gone up by the month. The booming racket, operating since 2013, has netted nearly 30 million euros in the last four years. The criminal operation, based in Catalunya, set up front companies in the Canary Islands, Andorra, Luxembourg and Hong Kong to launder their earnings. Guardia Civil officers, who seized around 1,000 Apps under
of consumers conned into installing the Apps seized. Top-of-the-range cars, and assets valued at several million euros, have been embargoed, and bank accounts frozen, in what the Guardia says is one of the largest mobile-phone fraud rackets in national history. The Guardia has set up a website on which mobilephone owners can type in their number and see whether they have, inadvertently, become a victim of the scam: check it out at Gdt.guardiacivil.es/ webgdt/inforikati.php.
construction, said the con-artists had been doctoring them to make them even more sophisticated, and more difficult for operators to detect. Mobile-phone providers in Santa Cruz, Sant Cugat and Mollet del Vallès (Barcelona province), have been searched, and lists

hearing, at a court in San Bartolome de Tirajana, in the south of the island, took place behind closed doors last Saturday. Ms Cowley is understood to have been Breaks’ former partner, and detectives are now awaiting the postmortem results. A Guardia Civil spokesman said: “At 12.45am yesterday, local police in Mogan responded after being alerted to a 999 call about an alleged assault, which had occurred at a property in the municipality. “The initial police response focused on assisting the victim, and, subsequently, detaining the alleged aggressor,
A LORRY was speeding along the Granada roads with its cargo on fire, leaving the driver with a big dilemma: should he stop, or carry on! It was a tough decision, after he’d recovered from the shock, because the truck was close to a natural park, which could easily have triggered another forest fire, similar to last week’s Huelva blaze. Fortunately, his boss took responsibility and told him to drive on to Cogollos Vega, some two kilometres away, where firefighters based there doused the flames rapidly. It is understood that some dumped furniture, which had previously been been burned, had re-ignited on the lorry’s trailer.

‘Cry Baby’ Breaks is murder suspect FORMER wrestling favourite Jimmy Breaks has been arrested in a murder probe on Gran Canaria, following the death of Donna Cowley, believed to be his ex-wife, in her Mogan apartment. Mr Breaks, now 80, was known as “Cry Baby” from his wresting hey-day on television. He lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire, before moving to Gran Canaria. Police found Ms Cowley, 47, “heavily bleeding”, after they had received reports of an “assault”, before she suffered a cardiac arrest 24 hours later at the University Hospital of Gran Canaria, and, tragically, died. Breaks, a TV mainstay for 28 years, when professional wrestling reached record audiences in the UK, was remanded in custody

who was immediately handed over to the Guardia Civil in Mogan. “The victim, a foreign woman who lives in the Canary Islands, was taken to Arguineguin Health Centre, before being transferred to the Gran Canaria Insular Hospital in the capital Las Palmas, where she died. “Until now, and pending the official result of the autopsy, it has not been possible to determine the exact causes of her death, and whether her death is linked to the possible assault. “The arrested man is also being held on suspicion of undermining the authority of the law, relating to an act of ‘active resistance’ at the Guardia Civil station in Puerto Rico.”
CATALUÑA has approved a proposal to legalise cannabis throughout the region, 118 of the 127 ministers voting in favour.
It means that the cultivation, consumption and distribution of cannabis could become fully legal. The region is already home to pseudo-legal cannabis clubs, but the local government’s move would automatically impose new regulations. That’s because the drug can be sold to people aged over 18 only, and an individual cannabis club’s production of the dried plant would be limited to 150kg per year. But the final hurdle against the proposal could come from the Spanish Government, which has the power to overturn the legislation in court. This happened in 2013, when Madrid’s ruling political party overturned the decision to ban bullfighting in Cataluña.

New Carnival Museum is a genuine eye-opener THE new Carnival Museum (La Casa del Carnaval) in Santa Cruz, which opened on Monday, welcomed hundreds of curious visitors.
The Museum, which cost over 3m euros to build, is situated in the Barranco de Santos park, under the Galcerán bridge. Admission is free, and it will be open to the public until September. It showcases the Santa Cruz Carnival, and enables visitors to learn about the heritage of this colourful, annual event, which has been declared a Fiesta of International Tourist Interest. Both tourists and residents marvelled at the intricate work in each of the Carnival Queen Fantasy dresses on the opening day, and it certainly proved to be a big hit with everyone. They are one of the main attractions, the visitors admiring all the hard work and artistic design that goes into each outfit. The newly-built premises, spread over 1,000sq/m, will make the Carnival more accessible to tourists, provid-
ing a space for exhibitions and a meeting point for the various Carnival groups. There will be a permanent exhibition, a multi-purpose room for temporary exhibitions and presentations of all kinds, plus a study
centre, with documents to research the Carnival’s history, and a coffee shop. The exhibition area will vary each year, displaying the current Carnival Queen’s costume, as well as those worn that year by perform-
ers. Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez said the possibility of increasing the space was already being considered, using the huge area available on the terrace as a whole, even with a second floor. He added: “It will
be the home of all the Carnival.” The Casa del Carnaval can be visited free of charge, Monday-Sunday from 9am7pm. For more details, check out www.carnavaldetenerife. com
Rajoy power-bill vow such a shock
SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has pledged to lower electricity bills throughout the country, including the Canaries, some time this year. Rajoy says that “as soon as there is a margin to do so”, he will reduce the cost of domestic energy. He will also trim the income-tax rate “once Spain’s deficit has reached its target of less than 3% of the GDP”. The deficit target for this year is 3.1%, falling to 2.2% by the end of 2018, although Spain has yet to comply with its selfimposed targets. And also, it avoided a massive EU fine narrowly a few months ago. But even if the country manages to meet its targets, it won’t be until 2019, which means it will have taken a full decade to resolve its recession-related debt.
Rajoy also says that by the year 2020, a total of 20 million people in Spain
will be in employment. He also believes the Spanish economy has “experienced
an unprecedented transformation”, thanks to his government’s reforms since it maintained power in November 2011. “We have one of the fastestgrowing economies in the Eurozone,” he said proudly. “As a result, in the first half of this year, Spain will recover the GDP it lost during the financial crisis.” Of the electricity bills, the Prime Minister said that “past policies” had left a hangover, which is still around today. But he gives an assurance that his cabinet is “working actively” to ensure the “components of electricity bills, which are subject to State regulation”, do not increase. “We will reduce these elements progressively, as the margin to do so arises,” he added. But FACUA, the non-profit, consumers’ organisation, has warned that bills are likely to go up by as much as 9.1% this year, and that
their structure still offers little or no incentive to use less power to save money. At least 60% of household energy bills are made up of taxes and charges, and many householders report that even if they are away from home for a whole month, their bills are practically the same for that period as at any other time, when they are in residence. Rajoy’s opposition parties remain unconvinced that his government’s reforms have improved the economy, pointing out that although employment has increased, it continues to be “temporary, menial, insecure and badly-paid”. And, to add to the pressure he is surely experiencing, the left-wing PSOE (socialists) and Podemos are in current talks to patch up the animosity which exists between the parties. Their leaders want to create a majority which would oust Rajoy’s rightwing PP from power.

Guardia rustles up marijuana-grower
OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil had a field day when they raided a cattle farm, which doubled as a marijuana plantation. They seized a total of 192 plants, along with elaborate electrical systems for airconditioning and irrigation to aid their growth. The farm, just outside the pretty village of Lucainena de las Torres, in Almeria, Andalucia, is owned by a 53-year-old man, who was arrested. Police sources alerted the Guardia to a marijuana greenhouse in the area. And officers, who searched several farms, became suspicious when they saw one using a generator, constantly, through the day and night. The sophisticated setup also included halogen lamps, drip-irrigation, refrigeration tubes and filters to mask the smell, which is often a big tell-tale sign for the law.

Free Wifi for tourists
THE Cabildo is installing free Wifi in four of the main tourist boroughs: Adeje, Arona, Santiago del Teide and Puerto de la Cruz. The aim of the project, called Tourism Wifi in Tenerife, is to promote tourism and offer access to information for up to half-a-million tourists, plus residents. Some 39 Wifi access points are being set up, connected to a wireless network, throughout the four municipalities, and the scheme could be extended all over the island in the future. All the Wifi hotspots have a
download speed of at least 10 megabytes, allowing a high number of users to navigate. But if any Wifi point exceeds that download speed, it will be increased to 20 megabytes. The innovative project will cost 35,000 euros, said Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, who was accompanied at a press conference by Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabé and Innovation Minister Antonio García Marichal. Alonso said: “More and more visitors are working online during their stay on the Island. If we can offer these services, we could prolong the length of a tourist’s average stay on the island, while making sure he or she leaves Tenerife as satisfied
as possible.”. And Bernabé added: “Around 63% of the tourists who visited Tenerife last year used the internet during their stay. “For this, they mainly used mobile phones as well as tablets and laptops, using them to check emails and social media, as well as searching for general information about Tenerife. “And 32% of our tourists search for information about the island, so these wireless networks will allow us to access data and improve our services.” The Wifi points, which should be working by the end of the month, have already been installed in the following areas: Adeje: Town Hall; entrance to Barranco del Infierno;
Playa Fañabé Tourism office; Playa Troya Tourism office, and at various beaches where the Council has concessions. Arona: Town Hall; Los Cristianos harbour; Mirador de la Centinela; Las Galletas beach-front; Garañana park; Costa del Silencio coastal walk, and various beaches where the Council has concessions. Santiago del Teide: Town Hall, Los Gigantes cliffs, and various beaches where the Council has concessions. Puerto de la Cruz: Lago Martiánez; Botanical Gardens in La Orotava; Plaza del Charco; Fishing Port, Castillo de San Felipe; Playa Jardín: Plaza de los Reyes Católicos, and Avenida de Colón.
Jobless figures tumbling again JUNE is proving one of the best months for Spain’s labour market as the jobless total fell again, by a staggering 98,317 people. And 87,692 people signed on to the country’s Social Security system, according to Employment Ministry figures released on Tuesday. The labour market’s steady improvement since 2014 has seen unemployment come down to 3.36 million. And the total paying into the Social Security system is now 18.4m, with 672,835 newcomers added over the last 12 months, which is a 3.79% increase on last June.

gether in Spain, and this is demonstrated in spring and
summer. In June 2016, the hospitality sector provided the greatest number of new additions to the Social Security system: 36,448 workers. Next came retail (31,344), followed by other sectors, such as administration, health, the services sector and industry, all taking on new workers to cover the summer-holiday period. The Social Security fund has now seen a steady growth of new contributors for 43 consecutive months. But conversely, June has again revealed the negative side of Spain’s decade-long economic crisis. There were more than two million temporary and reduced-hours’ contracts
signed in that month alone, and, of the total number of new workers, just 7.9% comprised indefinite contracts. The latest figures suggest that when the quarterly workforce survey, known as the Encuesta de Población Activa (Active Population Survey, or EPA), is published at the end of this month, some 27% of people will be employed under temporary contracts. By the end of this year, a record 20 million contracts will have been signed in one year. So far, 2017 has seen 10.54m contracts being agreed, which is a million more than in the same period last year, 2016 ending with 19.98m contracts.

4m-euro Island
YOU’RE loaded, and you’ve been there, done that and seen it all. Well, here’s the perfect answer: buy your own luxury island, for just 3.7m euros. The stunning Illa d’en Colom, off the coast of Menorca in the Balearics, is on offer for almost half the original asking price. The island, set in 58 hectares (one hectare equals the size of a large football pitch), is just 200m from Menorca, in the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean. There are two separate beaches, a family home and outhouses, which are all in need of severe renovations. But what’s that to a multimillionaire? Its main house has six rooms on two floors, as well as a cabin with two bedrooms, a small boathouse and the remains of an old ore-mining house and a barn. The island’s landscaped pine forest and sweeping coastline, which form part of the Albufera des Grau’s natural park, give this retreat a wild beauty. The island also holds a commemorative monolith honouring three Spanish sailors, who died of the plague there in the late 18th century. And the peace treaty between Spain and Tunis is also believed to have been signed here in the late 1700s.

The right medicine for all our children THE H10 Costa Adeje Palace hotel hosted an important meeting of the Canarian Paediatric Association last weekend.
Heading up the event were the Presidents of the SCP (Society of Canarian Paediatricians, Luis Instigator del Castillo in Santa Cruz, and Gonzalo Cabrera Roca, in Las Palmas; Antonia María Pérez Pérez, the regional government’s Director-General of Human Resources, together with Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, (previously leading Public Health Paediatrician for the borough). The inaugural address, to professionals in the field of paediatric medicine, dealt with the sector’s relevance in the Canary Islands. It is one of the Spanish regions with the lowest number of these professionals, despite having the largest percentage of patients in this category. Del Castillo spoke about
the vital importance of this branch of medicine for the infant population, saying: “There is a need for more paediatricians in public centres, because you cannot deal with a child in the same way as you do an adult patient.
“And it is vital that public-health decisionmakers realise this. But, unfortunately, we are currently seeing the opposite.” The meeting’s aim was to debate the professional challenges for paediatricians
in the 21st century, which was reflected in the address given by Eduardo Domenech, head of the paediatrics’ department, and former rector of the University of La Laguna,. He told the audience of professionals: “Over the years, great discoveries have been made in paediatric pharmacology, and we are increasing our knowledge of genetics. “But what continues to be of the greatest relevance is personalised medical attention, which is where we have to make our advances. To oppose the dehumanisation we are seeing, we have to champion medicine that brings us closer, a kind of medical practice in which the family plays a fundamental part.” He stressed: “One of the huge advances, without doubt, has been the evolution of vaccinations, which we much continue to perfect, as pathogens evolve, too, and become stronger. “And for that reason, investigation is the cornerstone of our battle to eliminate

THE persistent heatwaves throughout several western hemisphere countries are beginning to ring alarm bells, and even the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) is concerned. It has warned that many of these countries have experienced extreme heat in the last couple of months. Portugal was struck by a series of fires, fuelled by the heat, while Spain had the hottest spring on record. And in Pakistan, Morocco and the UAE, where it is usually hotter than hot at this time, temperatures have hit record highs. Planes were even grounded in America’s south-west… and all this before summer is really underway. In Pakistan’s Turbat city, it was 53.5ºC on 28th May, the highest temperature ever recorded there in that month! It is, perhaps, the highestever logged in Asia and even the world, apart from Death Valley, California’s 56.6ºC, in 1913, and last year’s 54ºC, recorded in Kuwait. In California, Nevada and Arizona, eight records have been broken after being set only last year. And in Phoenix, Arizona, where planes were grounded because of the heat, thermometers reached 47.8ºC on 19th June. Of the 11,059 days in which temperatures have been recorded, this has occurred just 15 times. “Every year, summers are getting hotter, but extreme heat is still rare,” says Ed Hawkings, a climate researcher from Reading University’s Meteorological Department. Ricardo Francisco García

It is hotter than hot, and there’s nowhere to hide
Herrera, a climate expert from the Geoscience Institute at Madrid’s Complutense University, revealed that every year since 1980, summers have lasted one day longer in Spain. “This means a rise in the average June temperatures to the tune of 0.5 to 1.2 degrees every decade,” he added. Last November, the WMO published a report on the global climate between 2011 and 2015, the hottest years on record, and it should also have included 2016. The report links the rise in
temperatures to both the glut in natural disasters and climate change. These disasters include the drought in eastern and southern Africa between 2010 and 2015, floods in south-east Asia in 2011, heatwaves in India and Pakistan, and America’s Hurricane Sandy in 2012. “Meteorologists take heatwaves and the health problems they pose very seriously,” said WMO spokeswoman Clare Nullis. A University of Hawaii study, published last month by Nature Climate Change magazine, found
783 fatalities linked to heatwaves, spread around 164 cities in 36 countries, between 1980 and 2014. The study, led by Colombian scientist Camilo Mora, concluded that 30% of the world’s population is exposed, for at least 20 days a year, to potentiallydangerous temperatures. If measures are taken to slow the climate-change down, this percentage could still rise 48% by the year 2100. And should nothing be done to reduce carbon emissions, it could rise by as much as 74%. “There are a lot of ways to define a heatwave,” said Mora. “Temperatures are studied to see when they depart from the standard range. The problem with this system is that you could detect a heatwave in the North Pole! But, in the report, we define the variable as a heat rise that could be fatal.” Meteorologists take heatwaves, and the health problems they pose, very seriously. Heatwave effects can be catastrophic, and scientists estimate that during the 2003 heatwave, the worstever recorded in Europe, around 70,000 people died. Since then, governments everywhere have put certain measures in place, such as routine visits to the elderly.
Heat-waves can also trigger other catastrophes, such as fires, droughts, the death of livestock and crop loss. “According to a forecast by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC), heatwaves will be increasingly-frequent and intense in Spain and the rest of the world,” says Julio Díaz, head of the Epidemiology and Biostatistics Department at the National School of Health at Madrid’s Carlos III University. “Heatwaves can have diverse implications for health. Generally, they kill the elderly and the sick, but not those in good health. “They mainly attack the circulatory and respiratory systems, and the highest risk group is the over-65s, and particularly women over 75.” Omid Mazdiyasni, a climate-researcher at the University of California, in Irvine, said: “We don’t need to be frightened, but we do need to be worried. There’s no direct threat to life, but we do expect the heatwaves to increase in intensity, frequency and severity.” He added: “We need to work to reduce the impact of climate-change, and build an infrastructure, resilient to extreme weather events.”
Complete make-over for Armeñime homes WORK on the onemillion-euro renovation of 76 Armeñime social housing apartments, built in the 1970s, has been completed. Earlier this week, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, and other local and insular authorities who visited the area, admired the finished product! The renovation costs have been divided between Adeje Council, the Cabildo and the regional and national governments. Mayor Fraga said: “These improvements were necessary, given the age
of the buildings. We have carried out reformations in line with today’s regulations, and to ensure the well-being of the residents. “We have also been able to improve the surrounding area with new urban furniture, adapted to suit the residents, as well as better levels of accessibility”. Joining the Mayor were Adeje Municipal Works Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, Cabildo Vice-President and Housing Councillor Aurelio Abreú, together with Marta Arocha Correa, Cabildo Councillor for Municipal Works. The homes are in 10 blocks
in the Las Rosas-Armeñime zone, and parts of the buildings were in a poor state before the upgrades began. The work, carried out by the EMSA company (Adeje Services), also included the addition of a new health park for residents.
Aurelio Abreú said the reforms would also improve residents’ security and comfort, given that new waterproofing for the blocks was included. “This is an important contribution from public bodies to guarantee the well-being of our residents,”
he added. The 10 blocks were painted, windows and doors were replaced where necessary, and, overall, the visual and security aspects of the buildings were upgraded. New electrical central points and meters were also installed, in line with current regulations, and the roofs now feature solar panels. Access ramps, of particular importance given that many of the residents are elderly, have also been installed. A park with exercise machines has also been built, as well as a children’s playground, benches and outdoor seating.

NEWS IN BRIEF Jamon not so tasty
THE sought-after Jamon Iberico, which is exported from Spain, has been deemed a “massive fraud” by a German daily newspaper. In fact, some 90% of the specialised ham, sold outside Spain, is not authentic, according to the Süddeutsche Zeitung, in Munich A 2001 regulation allowed ham from Iberico pigs, which had been cross-bred with American Duroc pigs, to be labelled Iberico, after the most-desired pure breed. Urban also claimed there were not enough bellota acorns to sustain the amount of pigs sold as bellota jamon, the top-ofthe-range product. The report, citing sources from the University of Cordoba, said the use of feeds that mimic the fatty acids of the bellota have been detected in Spanish jamon.
Blazing taxi destroyed
A TAXI from Candelaria caught fire spontaneously while on the TF-1, just before the Guimar tunnel heading south, on Tuesday evening. Thankfully, the driver was safe, and no one was injured. Firefighters soon put the blaze out, but not before it had destroyed the cab. What caused the fire has yet to be ascertained.

Spain is top target for migrants again SPAIN has become a magnet for migrants again, with more people moving there than leaving the country since 2009, when the economic crisis scared away Spaniards and overseas residents.
The effect means that, for the first time in five years, the Spanish population has risen. On 1st January this year, the number stood at 46.53 million, a 0.19% increase from the previous year, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE). Immigrant arrivals in Spain peaked in the early 2000s, during the economic boom, but the influx ended abruptly in 2009, the last year when those arrivals exceeded departures. And it wasn’t just down to foreigners, because a lot of Spaniards also decided to go abroad in search of jobs, especially to the UK. At the height of the financial crisis, in 2013, Spain lost 250,000 inhabitants this way. But immigration has since started picking up, with emigration slowing down.
In 2015, more foreigners settled in Spain than those who left, but the number of nationals leaving resulted in net emigration, although by a small margin. Last year, for the first time since 2009, the trend was reversed: net migration was positive, showing a figure of 89,126 people. The data for 2016 shows the most intense immigration since 2008: 417,033 new arrivals. Of these, 85% were foreigners, while 15% were returning Spaniards. And 354,461 foreign nationals settled down in Spain, while 241,795 departed. The main country of origin is Venezuela, where a political and economic crisis has pushed nearly 30,000 people out of the country and into Spain. Fewer than 2,000 returned to Venezuela last year, leaving a net figure of 27,674 in favour of Spain. Even so, their Spanish community remains small, with just 63,491 people last year. The second-most-important country of origin for immigration last year was Morocco, with 21,386 net arrivals. There was also significant immigration from Colombia (16,809). Needless to say, the two
largest foreign communities living in Spain are the Romanians (678,098) and Moroccans (667,189). Also last year, 150,739 foreignborn residents acquired Spanish citizenship. After Venezuela, Morocco, Colombia and Romania, the fifth country in terms of net migration was Italy, with nearly 15,000 arrivals. And as more British nationals come to Spain, many Spaniards choose to move to the UK, making the net migration figure smaller. Yet there are still more Spaniards leaving than coming back. In 2016, 86,112 Spaniards emigrated, while 62,572 returned. And, despite fears over Brexit, Britain was their preferred destination. For every three Spaniards who moved there last year, just one returned. In terms of favoured destinations after Britain, Spaniards chose to move, predominantly, to France, Germany and the US. A new joint-report, by Britain’s Office for National Statistics and Spain’s National Statistics Institute, has found that 121,000 (40%) of British residents in Spain were aged 65-and-over in 2016, a total that has more than doubled since 2006.
Sex trio performed, by a kids’ play area
A BELGIAN man, aged 56, was arrested by police for domestic violence, which consisted of locking up his wife, and using a mop pole to block the door in a room at their Las Rosas home in Arona. The incident happened last Saturday, when Local Police received a call for help from a 58-year-old woman in Calle Imada at 6.15pm. When officers arrived at the property, they found the front door open and heard a woman banging on a door, calling for help. Once inside, they found the, door jammed tight with a mop pole and duct tape, which prevented it being opened from the other side. When officers opened the door, they found the distraught woman sobbing, saying she had been locked in for over four hours, but she refused offers of medical assistance. The cops found the husband at a friend’s house, just along the street, and he assured them he never assaulted his wife physically.
Robber’s six of the worst
POLICE have arrested a 40-year-old Spaniard, alleged to have carried out two robberies with violence, causing injuries, and four robberies with force, in various Santa Cruz establishments. An investigation into the criminal, well-known to the cops, began at the end of May and ended with his arrest on 7th June. He had been arrested four times in a two-month period, and was charged with six criminal offences. He was placed at the disposal of the competent Judicial Authority, who sent him to prison immediately.
THREE people, alleged to have engaged in sexual acts next to Emperatriz Maria de Austria children’s playground in Madrid, have been arrested.
Police nabbed the two men and a woman after receiving
complaints from shocked parents at around 1pm on Saturday, who said they were in clear view of the playground. The trio, an 18-year-old woman and two men, aged 19 and 29, were sleeping on some nearby grass when the National Police arrived, accusing them of “exhibitionism”. El Mundo reported that the
three were local residents, who had been partying all night before finding their way to the park. And they may have been under the influence of alcohol and drugs. One mother told the newspaper: “They were quite close to us and were going at it without any kind of discretion. It caught the attention of those nearby.”

The Magnificent Seven! Shell-shocked!
SEVEN youngsters from Adeje have received a Youth Talent award (“Jóvenes con Talento”) for gaining excellent grades during the 2016-2017 academic year. The students, Aarón Germán Martín Durán, Manuel Gregorio (Bachillerato IES Adeje), Ling Li Li, María Magdalena Rodríguez Linares (ESO IES Adeje), Oliver Ferrin Günther,
Cristian Bettin and Raya Koleva Zdravkova (ESO IES El Galeón), have also been given 500 euros each, and a plaque in recognition of their achievements. These awards are part of an initiative, acknowledging the students’ effort and work in different, second-level disciplines in Adeje’s public-education centres. The seven winners are excellent examples of the kind of youngster the borough delights in. And, during a meeting
with them, Adeje Youth Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares advised the students to continue with their top-class work and studies. The awards were received, mostly, for studies in the science and biology sectors, and, said Cllr Chinea Linares: “We are working to encourage all our students in their class work with these awards. “The initiative has been well received, and is something we plan to continue in the coming years.”
DIVERS hunting for a missing person in a Spanish river were stunned to discover a huge cache of live mortar shells. Guardia Civil officers were diving at Los Ojos del Rio Jiloca (The Eyes of the River Jiloca), when they found no fewer than 538 shells in the muddy, Aragon river bed, in the north-east. It was one of the largest discoveries of unexploded and dumped ordnance ever found in Spain, and the motar bombs would have been placed there during the Spanish Civil War.
The task of removing them was so hazardous that they had to be taken, a few at a time, to a local quarry, where they were detonated. But, because the shells were underwater in a relativelyinaccessible area, they were, potentially, unstable. It meant that various specialists had to work together for weeks to remove the shells - and then transport them safely to be detonated. It is believed that a variety of Civil War armaments, abandoned by both sides, still turns up every three days somewhere in Spain. If found, simply report them to the police.

Copy-cat terrorist planned massacre
A RESIDENT of Mallorca, believed to be an ISIS terrorist, planned a London-Bridge-style stabbing spree on the island. But before Abdelkader Mahmoudi could attempt the massacre, he was arrested in dawn raids on the Balearic island, along with three other alleged jihadists. And, during a joint operation, suspected group leader Tarik Chadlioui, an imam, was held by UK police in Birmingham. Madrid Judge Santiago Pedraz, who remanded the four Mallorca suspects in prison, said: “Abdelkader Mahmoudi had revealed his intention to become a martyr and had, allegedly, planned violent acts like a
massacre in the square in Inca, where the town hall is, stabbing passers-by.” A statement by Spanish police said: “The investigation began in 2015, when a series of videos, discovered on a website, showed the process of indoctrination, recruitment, and subsequent journey to Syria of a young Muslim living in Spain. “The film promoter was identified as a Salafist imam, who is now under arrest in the UK and being investigated by several European countries. “This person, who had travelled to Mallorca, began to dynamise the group, now arrested, exercising functions ranging from recruiting, indoctrination and radicalisation in favour of Daesh, and becoming, from that point on, their spiritual leader.”
In hot water… but we just don’t care! THE waters off Spain’s Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts hit recordhigh temperatures in June, according to measurements taken by the country’s network of deep-sea buoys. For the first three weeks of the month, between 2007 and 2017, the increases in water temperature varied between 0.5ºC and 2.5ºC. The biggest increase has been in the Mediterranean, where a buoy moored off the coast of Tarragona registered a 2.5ºC increase in June last year. It reached a record 27ºC, which was the highest throughout the country. Over the last decade, in fact, the temperature of the Mediterranean has risen sharply. And this June has been among the hottest in 50 years in Spain, with record temperatures of sea water along Spain’s Atlantic Cantabrian coast. A buoy off Galicia’s Cabo Silleiro recorded 19.9ºC,
up 1.25ºC from last year, while at Bilbao, further east along the Atlantic coast, the temperature reached 23.5ºC. The water was even hotter at Cabo de Gata, in the Med, a buoy recording a 2.48ºC increase, to 24.3ºC. Ana Casal, a climatologist with Spain’s AEMET weather service, who said such high sea temperatures were unusual, said there had been increases of up to 3.5ºC in the Med waters off Murcia, Valencia and Alicante, while the Strait of Gibraltar registered temperatures of between 20ºC and 22ºC. She predicted that between September and October, the waters off Spain’s coast may well get hotter. “The sea doesn’t easily retain heat or cool down, which is why we get high temperatures on land in July and August, but later in the year in the sea,” said Ms Casal. But José Luis Acuña, a
marine environmentalist at the University of Oviedo, warns of the impact on sea life of rising temperatures. “In the Cantabrian, where there are more and more days when the temperature is above 20ºC, seaweed forests have virtually disappeared in the last 10 years,” he said, adding that rising water temperatures were problematic for migratory animals, such as Mediterranean turtles. Another consequence of warmer sea-water is the arrival of invasive species. “It is possible that populations which do better in warm water will begin to move in,” said Acuña. “In the Cantabrian, we are starting to see fish that are typically from the south.” The problem is particularly serious in the Mediterranean, where there are at least 775 invasive species, according to recent studies.
San Miguel is planning a huge public-service area SAN Miguel Council is undertaking an ambitious project in the Las Chafiras industrial area of Llano del Camello, which will cost around 1.6 million euros.
It plans to convert 19 partbuilt industrial warehouses into a public-service area. Workers began building them in 2005, only for the recession to call a halt to the scheme. Mayor Arturo González said the new project would be split into two phases, and would be completed, hopefully, by the end of next year. “We intend to create a large, citizen-information office, with water, sewage and rubbish services,” he added. “But we also want areas for public shows, cultural exhibitions and
sports, such as rhythmic gymnastics and boxing. “We also want to set up training courses related to the businesses in the Industrial Estate.”
The building will also house a funeral home, with several crypts, as well as regional headquarters for the Guardia Civil’s Tráfico Department.
“We want it to be the South’s Tráfico office, which will allow residents in the area to submit paperwork right here, without having to travel to
Santa Cruz,” said Gonzalez. The vast area of space in the warehouses, with 8,000sq/m available, and the South motorway’s proximity, suggest it is an ideal location for the new infrastructures and municipal services. It is right next to Llano del Camello’s residential area, in which more than 3,000 people live, reflecting the expansion experienced in the Southern region over the last few years. San Miguel Council is even considering a proposal that a temporary health clinic be installed here, until the definitive clinic is built, directly opposite the warehouses. “We will gain a lot with this project, and it will answer the high demand from the population in Llano del Camello and Las Chafiras,” said the Mayor. “We are convinced that it will be a great boost for the area.”

Perverts thrive at the Pamplona Bull-Runs
POLICE presence on the streets of the Navarrese capital has been beefed up for Pamplona’s annual, world-famous “Running of the Bulls” festival, which starts today (Friday) and ends at midnight next Friday. An 500 extra officers will be in attendance throughout to combat sexual offences, following a string of complaints last year. Police say the complaints increased fourfold at last year’s festival, but it has been suggested by a campaigner that they were just the “tip of the iceberg”. Around 3,500 members of the Spanish National Police, the regional police force and local law enforcement, will be tasked with keeping the peace in a city whose population is expected to swell from 200,000 to one million over the next few days. Most of the women reporting abuse cases previously were Spanish nationals, who had travelled to Pamplona from other parts of the country. As for the assailants, there was a predominance of French nationals, who had no previous criminal records. As a result,
members of France’s Gendarmerie and National Police will also be patrolling the Pamplona streets. And more patrols will be dispatched to parts of the city with a higher record of sexual assault during past Bull Runs, especially the historical district of Casco Antiguo. Five men from Seville are still awaiting trial for their involvement in the gang rape of an 18-year-old girl in the early hours of 7th July last year. It was the most serious of the 19 sexualassault cases reported at last year’s festival, and prosecutors are seeking a 22-year prison sentence for each of them. The 2008 murder of young nurse Nagore Laffage, by a man with whom she refused to have sex, shook Pamplona’s society and triggered a citizen response to a reality that had gone, largely, ignored until then: the sexual abuse of women during the fiestas. And what began as activism by feminist groups, became government policy in 2013, when the Navarre Institute for Equality (INAI) created a redhand symbol representing the message “No is no”. This slogan is now seen widely on posters, flags, and stickers throughout the city. Geno Otxando, an INAI official, says that as a result of their
campaign, “people now come out in defence of an assaulted woman and give her assistance.” Police records show that, even as the population of Pamplona swells to a million, crime rates during the Bull Runs increase sixfold, compared with the rest of the year. Around 90% of complaints involve theft. Eduardo Sainz de Murieta, chief of criminal investigations at the regional force, the Policía Foral, says sexual crimes had not been a prime concern to date because the number of complaints averaged five every year. But in 2016, the number of complaints multiplied by four. Besides the 7th July gang rape, another 18 women reported abuse and violent assault. Although Sainz de Murieta has no data to back it up, he believes that this increase is because people are coming forward against behaviour that used to be silenced. But Otxando insists: “There are more reports because there is more support, but it is still the tip of the iceberg.” Pamplona Mayor Joseba Asiron said the city’s authorities want to ensure that “women, who make up 50% of our population, can walk the streets in the same conditions of safety and comfort as men do.”

Second blaze fuels more Huelva fears
Blaze melts ice truck
A REFRIGERATED truck, transporting Spanish-made Kalise ice cream, was destroyed in a blaze on Wednesday afternoon on the TF-1. It happened near Güímar, going north, but, fortunately, the driver wasn’t injured. He notified the emergency services, and was able to steer the truck on to the hard shoulder, out of harm’s way before firefighters arrived. They used some 2,000 litres of water to extinguish the blaze, but what caused it is still a mystery.
Thief was smoked out
AROUND 500 people have been evacuated in Huelva, Andalucia, following a new forest wildfire, just as firefighters had taken control of the existing blaze, which began a fortnight ago.
The new fire, coupled with strong winds, has spread over the El Campinillo area, forcing residents there and people living in Bellavista to abandon their homes. Spanish emergency services, called out on Monday afternoon, have been battling
since then to control the fire. Sixty firefighters and eight fire engines were deployed to the area, as well as nine planes. The fire comes after the initial one threatened to reduce to ashes the Doñana National Park, on the other side of Huelva. But that blaze, which devastated the coastal forest around Moguer, Mazagon and Matalscañas, including a section of Doñana National Park, is under control, and police are probing how it started. More than 200 firefighters were able to tame the blaze after the wind and temperature dropped,
and all three epicentres have now been contained, although there are still some flames. Doñana director Juan Pedro Castellano, said: “The National Park is now safe, and only a small portion was affected.” But he confirmed that much of the natural park, a pine forest that served as a buffer to its northern edge, has disappeared. The damaged area comprises sandy, pine forest mainly, and emergency services said the current situation could be considered a triumph, given the early panic. That’s when 50,000 people were trapped in
Matalscañas, and strong winds fanned the flames relentlessly. Among the 2,000 local residents evacuated over that weekend, some 500 remain in temporary accommodation in Moguer and nearby Almonte. The original blaze erupted at 9.30pm on Saturday, 24th June, in an agricultural area of Moguer containing many plastic greenhouses. And investigators suspect that it was caused by “the hand of man”. Andalucia President Susana Diaz said that detectives and forest-fire specialists would work “to the limit” to find out how it started.
POLICE in Santa Cruz have arrested a 28-yearold national, suspected of robbing an internet café in Santa Cruz. He was spotted at 4.30am last Friday by a National Police patrol unit. Officers stopped the man, who was carrying a large bag containing various items, including 241 packets of cigarettes. The cops determined that contents had been stolen from a nearby internet café, which had been broken into, and the man was arrested. In total, police seized the cigarettes, a tablet, a hover board, a screwdriver and a pair of gloves. The police report and the suspect, were placed at the disposal of the Santa Cruz Courts.
Tragic immigrants are drowned at sea SPANISH coastguards spent Tuesday night searching for 49 African immigrants, feared dead after their boat capsized in the Alboran Sea, which separates Spain and North Africa. The coastguards’ Sar Mastelero vessel focused its search on the area around Spain’s tiny Alboran Island, after three people were rescued from the halfsunken rubber boat, some 28 nautical miles from the
islet. The survivors said the craft had been carrying more than 50 men and had capsized after being hit by a wave. There was “no news” of the men on Wednesday morning said the Spanish coastguard agency. “If their deaths are confirmed, this will easily rank as the most deadly such tragedy off Spain so far this year.” it added. The search for the men began after a 17-year-old and two 25-year-olds were rescued by helicopter on Tuesday from a boat described as “deflated and capsized”.
They were transferred to a hospital in Spain’s Almería province, suffering from starvation, dehydration and hypothermia. The trio were in a state of shock and unable to provide details of what had happened to them, according to Spanish news agency Europa Press. Tragically, the coastguards searched the wrong area for 48 hours. The boat had been launched from the Al Hoceima coast of the Moroccan city at 8pm on Sunday. But the boat operators appeared to change the point of departure to some
40km east of their original site. That was in response to heightened security in Al Hoceima, after months of protest against the Moroccan central government. The families of those travelling on the boat were not notified of the switch, which meant that rescue services were, sadly, operating under incorrect information. They continued their search on Wednesday morning, with the help of a helicopter. But hopes faded fast, said the coastguard agency, “given the account
of the survivors and the number of hours that have passed”. Sixty immigrants have died this year trying to reach the Spanish coast, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), which also stresses that the Western Mediterranean route into Europe has now become deadlier than the eastern route through the Greek islands. However, the central route from Libya to Italy is considered the most lethal, with at least 2,247 immigrants dying so far this year, according to the IOM.

Pound recovers, thanks to BoE
By Carol schleisman

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks.
After sliding in the wake of the UK’s general election, the pound was able to recover from its worst levels, thanks to Bank of England (BoE) speculation. Over the past two weeks, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has been fluctuating between 1.12 and 1.14 euros, with GBP/USD managing to strengthen to a five-week high of $1.30. While EUR/ GBP dipped from a high of £0.88 to trade in the region of £0.87, the euro was able to storm to its best levels against the US dollar since May 2016 - achieving a high of $1.14. After a rocky couple of weeks following the UK general election, the Conservatives finally reached a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), meaning that Prime Minister Theresa May had the backing necessary for a minority government. The DUP deal wasn’t universally popular, and May remains on uncertain
ground after losing her majority, but she did manage to pass the Queen’s Speech vote, meaning that (for the moment at least) her position is relatively secure. While this was positive news for the pound, from the perspective that the UK isn’t going to have to head back to the polls in the near future, GBP gains were more the result of Bank of England (BoE) developments. After stating earlier in the month that Britain isn’t ready for higher borrowing costs, BoE Governor Mark Carney appeared to have a bit of a change of heart. The central-bank chief sent Sterling soaring as
Brexit Yes - but EU rights are also vital SIX out of 10 Brits want to keep their European Union citizenship after Brexit according to research by the London School of Economics (LSE).
The study found that many would be prepared to pay a healthy sum to retain their rights to live, work, study and travel in the EU. This was most common among those aged 18-24, with 85% keen to retain their EU citizenship alongside their British one. The findings come as pressure on Theresa May mounts to pull back from her “hard-Brexit” plans. Those against it want her
to come to an arrangement that maintains the strongest possible trade links, and others, after the UK leaves the bloc in 2019. Michael Bruter, professor of political science and European politics at the LSE, said the research showed that young people in particular were “very unhappy” with, potentially, losing rights they regarded as fundamental. Respondents said they would be prepared to pay up to 461 euros and more to keep their rights. “They would, paradoxically, be willing to pay far more than they currently do (compared with the current per capita contribution made by UK citizens to the EU budget) to retain those rights,” said the professor.
he stated: “Some removal of monetary stimulus is likely to become necessary if the trade-off facing the MPC continues to lessen, and the policy decision accordingly becomes more conventional.” Although the pound managed to jump to a multiweek high against the US dollar towards the close of June, its gains against the euro were less spectacular, with EUR exchange rates strengthening, thanks to US dollar weakness. The euro was also supported by European Central Bank (ECB) speculation, with some believing that the central bank is moving closer
to tapering its quantitativeeasing programme. With central-bank policy plans being the driving force of currency market movement at the moment, any reports which appear to support or undermine the case for tighter monetary policy will be closely attended to. If upcoming UK data (including the nation’s services PMI) confirms that the economy slowed further in the second quarter of the year, it could actually support BoE rate-hike bets, as the central bank may be compelled to intervene and counter the impact of rising inflation and stagnant wages on UK consumer spending.
Eurozone retail sales and UK employment figures will be of particular interest over the next couple of weeks. Italian mafia in police spotlight SPAIN’S Guardia Civil, together with Catalonia regional police, began an operation at 4am on Wednesday against the Italian Camorra mafia in Barcelona, arresting around 20 people.
The suspects are believed to have been laundering drug money, via pubs and bars, as well as through the purchase and sale of cars and jewellery. During the investigation, the authorities seized 520kg of cocaine, and 450kg of hashish and marijuana.
In addition, Spain’s central High Court, the Audiencia Nacional, has ordered assets worth five million euros to be frozen. Those arrested, says the Spanish Government in a statement, are accused of money-laundering, drugtrafficking and organising criminal gangs. Alongside the Spanish authorities, police in Italy and Germany have also been working on the investigation, carrying out several searches. Investigators believe the suspects have been operating in a number of European countries. And, as such, their operation outside of Spain has been
co-ordinated by Eurojust, the European Union’s Judicial Co-operation Unit. The majority of the detainees are Italian, although there are also Spaniards, Colombians, Venezuelans and Chileans under arrest. The Catalan capital is a popular destination for the mafia, which has, historically, chosen Barcelona as a place to live, given its proximity to Italy, and because its members can go unnoticed there. And Catalonia’s coast has, historically, been a place where the mafia launder their ill-gotten gains.

In The Dark
Tuesday 11th July, BBC1, 21.00
A brand-new, four-part drama by Bafta-winning writer Danny Brocklehurst (Ordinary Lies, The Driver, Exile) starring MyAnna Buring and adapted from books by best-selling novelist Mark Billingham. As DI Helen Weeks (MyAnna Buring) grapples apprehensively with pregnancy, she’s compelled to return to her loathed rural home town of Polesford, Derbyshire with her partner and fellow detective Paul (Ben Batt). Two girls have been abducted and the man arrested is married to Helen’s childhood best friend, Linda Bates (Emma Fryer). As a result, Linda has been drawn into the centre of a media storm and the local police force is under enormous pressure to get their man. But is he guilty? And why is Helen so desperate to come to Linda’s aid, after avoiding Polesford for all these years?
This brand new four-part series presented by Ranvir Singh gives families an eight-week challenge to get fitter, eat better, and save money on their shopping. With the help of chef and nutritionist Dale Pinnock, finance guru Gemma Godfrey and fitness consultant Tom Pitfield, the series aims to turn their lives around by ditching junk food, getting a grip on their spending and focusing on their health. In a time of rising inflation, with families feeling burned out, when weekly grocery budgets are being stretched by high prices at the checkouts, and with the UK being the second most obese country in Europe, Ranvir and her team of experts meet a new family each week, who are facing a range of issues. They include a couple ‘addicted’ to expensive take-away pizzas, a family whose teatimes are based around processed freezer food, and a dad who needs to lose weight or face potential health issues like diabetes and heart disease. In the first episode, Ranvir and her team of experts are in Manchester with the Harling family, helping working mum Lorraine deal with her fussy kids who only want to eat chicken dippers. Ranvir said: “I was thrilled with the results the families achieved, from losing weight to spending more time together. But the real eye-opener for me was how much money everyone saved, because most people, including me, reckon being healthy costs loads more, but my team proved the absolute opposite is true!” Chef and nutritionist Dale Pinnock said: “Helping these families cook simple, cost effective meals from scratch was a challenge, especially as most of them normally eat take-aways and ready meals. But the simple dishes, combined with the advice of using a weekly meal planner really helped them focus, and the results were amazing!” Money expert Gemma Godfrey said: “The families in the series are typical of most of us - working harder than ever and finding it tricky to keep track of their spending. I was delighted to show them a few tips and tricks to help them get control of their cash and make sure they made some serious savings on their weekly food shopping.” Fitness consultant Tom Pitfield said: “Fitting exercise into your day is never easy when you’ve got children to look after. But I wanted to show the families in the series that finding just 15 minutes a day can make all the difference. And you don’t need an expensive gym - these routines can be done in your own living room, so it couldn’t be easier to get fit and healthy.”

Granddad, Dementia And Me Tuesday 11th July, BBC1, 22.45
In 2014, 79 year-old Tom Sivyer was diagnosed with Vascular Dementia. Shortly afterwards, his grandson Dominic began filming on this moving, intimate and warm documentary that follows Tom and his family through a period that would turn family life upside down. “I started filming this documentary to try and make sense of an illness that was taking away the most important man in my life and dismantling 50 years of a marriage. But what I found defied expectation” - Dominic Sivyer Shot over two years, Granddad, Dementia & Me is told through Dominic’s eyes as he struggles to look after his granddad Tom, whilst at the same time, his grandparents relationship begins to suffer under the onset of Tom’s disease. Dominic follows his granddad after he is sectioned, sent to a care home, and moved from one family home to the next. At 82 years-old, Dominic’s grandma Pam, finding it almost impossible to live with the increasingly erratic husband, is faced with a terrible dilemma: does she stay with her husband as he turns into someone she doesn’t recognise, or will they have to separate? Carefully balancing his role as both filmmaker and protagonist, Dominic presents an honest, unsweetened account of the crisis in his grandparents’ life. Despite the difficulty of the situation, the film is wrapped up in love and warmth. And just when it looks like the seemingly downward spiral of Tom’s illness will tear them apart, the family ultimately find a peaceful and happy solution in an unexpected situation.

Hospital
Tuesday 11th July, BBC2, 21.00
With access to two key specialities - cardiology and neurosurgery - this episode explores how staff at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust are pushing the boundaries of what is technologically possible - at a time when the Trust has a planned annual deficit of £41 million, and savings need to be made across the board. Almost ten years ago, the Trust centralised its cardiology services at Hammersmith Hospital and established one of the UK’s foremost specialist heart assessment centres, or HACs. London Ambulance Service brings Eddie, a 56 year-old city worker suffering a severe heart attack, to the HAC where he is treated immediately in one of the catheterization laboratories (cath lab). Eddie’s doctor, consultant cardiologist Iqbal Malik comments: “I’m very clear that today he [would have died] if he hadn’t ended up with us and had gone to a smaller hospital where they didn’t have a cath lab.” Since a London-wide network of eight heart assessment centres was established over the last decade, death rates from the most serious heart attacks have halved in the capital. But this year, the cardiology service still needs to make savings of three million pounds across the cardiac department. The cardiology team at Hammersmith also deal with rare and life threatening heart conditions. Twenty three year-old primary school teacher Rosa has an infection on her mitral valve called endocarditis. Rosa’s is an extremely complex case, as some infected tissue from her heart has broken off causing strokes in her brain. “It’s the last thing you want to see in a young person, it carries a high mortality,” says consultant cardiologist Susan Connolly (pictured). “It’s one of the most challenging things we treat because the timing of surgery is crucial. If you don’t get the timing of surgery right, the patient will die.” It takes specialists from both the cardiology and neurosurgery departments to work out the least risky time to operate on Rosa - will they wait for the damage in her brain to subside and risk further tissue from the heart breaking off causing more strokes, or risk operating sooner with the chance she might have a big brain bleed on the table? Meanwhile at Charing Cross Hospital, site of the Trust’s specialist neurosurgery department, 28 year-old former dancer Ben needs an operation to remove a recurrent brain tumour. “It’s very frustrating treating brain tumour patients like Ben where he’s had surgery and his tumour’s come back,” says consultant neurosurgeon Kevin O’Neill. However: “These days, as opposed to his previous surgery four years ago, we have more tools in the box.” Kevin will use 3D imaging to locate Ben’s tumour, as well as leading diagnostic technology. “We’re also developing new tools. I think we are now starting to make advances. With innovations it’s going to open a whole new world of research and treatment options.”

Horizon: Dippy And The Whale Thursday 13th July, BBC2, 21.00
Over the last two years BBC Two’s science strand Horizon has been behind-the-scenes at London’s Natural History Museum, following the replacement of the iconic ‘Dippy the Dinosaur’ skeleton cast with the real skeleton of a blue whale - the world’s biggest animal - positioned hanging in a lunge diving pose. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, this special 1 x 60’ film follows the teams involved in one of the world’s most unique engineering challenges. Replacing Dippy is brave and bold - it’s the first thing visitors see when they enter the grand Hintze Hall - but the Natural History Museum is changing and the installation of the colossal Blue Whale skeleton is the start of a new chapter. The largest animal ever to have lived, blue whales were driven to the brink of extinction by hunting and were the first species humans decided to save, telling an inspiring story of hope for the natural world. In this special BBC Two programme viewers are taken behind the scenes to follow this super-sized challenge and discover just how you move the biggest skeletons on earth. The team of museum conservators and engineers take on the mammoth task of renovating the hall where Dippy is taken apart bone by bone, ready for his tour of the country - and then prepare for the enormous challenge of getting the whale ready to go on display - all without closing the museum to the public. From her mysterious beaching in Ireland back in 1881, the film traces the descendants of Ned Wickham (the man who found her), looking inside his diaries as he first reported his find. Viewers are also taken into the museum’s secret vaults as we follow: Lorraine Cornish, the museum’s Head of Conservation who has over 36 years of experience and is responsible for cleaning and caring for every one of the whale’s 220 bones. Richard Sabin, the Vertebrates Collection Manager, who is tasked with ensuring the whale is even more inspiring than Dippy, and who suggests hanging the skeleton it in the lunge feeding pose. Jennifer Flippance, the Project Manager for the move, who is responsible for ensuring that the museum is ready for the whale’s grand unveiling on 13 July 2017. We also meet the engineering team who built the dinosaurs for Jurassic Park - but this time they’re behind the gigantic steel structure that will hold the whale together. Replacing Dippy with a 126 year-old blue whale specimen is a story that goes beyond science and engineering. With the day of the dinosaur behind us, the museum is looking to the future and concentrating on saving the species we have on the earth today.

Craig Petrie visits Dessie to remind him the college trip to the hydroelectric dam is still on. Dessie’s mother Mhari has doubts. Petrie insists it will do the kids good. Kieran arrives at Dessie’s as Petrie is leaving. He agrees to join the excursion. In the investigation, Marr continues to be a person of interest and when a police search warrant is granted and his house and possessions are pulled apart, he finally snaps and goes after Evie, to put an end to what he sees as her campaign of hatred. In doing so, his secrets are revealed.. Meanwhile, Lauren Quigley sacks Albrighton, though he warns her that something big is coming and the killer will try to top the Jonjo incident. Albrighton suggests Quigley needs him but Quigley is unwavering, she doesn’t need anyone. Craig Petrie tells Quigley that someone fired shots at him whilst he was out running. Annie follows up the complaint and heads to see Don McGrellish’s at his farm. As she is checking the permit and asks to see the weapon, she discovers Don’s rifle is not there. Don is forced to admit that he’s been paying Dessie to shoot vermin. Annie pays Mhari a visit regarding Dessie and the gun. Mhari leaves Annie to search the house. During her search, Annie fails to find any trace of the gun, but she does find something else.. The police receive an urgent call about events at the hydroelectric dam where Annie and Quigley rush to and risk their lives in the process. Just as the police think events at the dam have brought the case to a close the underwater drone on Alan’s boat picks up the image of a drowned man weighted to the bottom of the loch with curling stones.

David Dickinson’s Name Your Price ITV1, 15.00
David Dickinson’s Name Your Price sees three pairs of contestants competing against each other to correctly value antiques or collectables in order to win a top cash prize! Taking inspiration from the older, golden age of game shows, David Dickinson’s Name Your Price challenges contestants to correctly identify the valuable item from a selection of three. Across three rounds, host and antiques expert David ‘The Duke’ Dickinson describes each of the three objects, detailing their history and provenance. However, David is only telling the truth about one item, the valuable one, and the information about the other two items are lies!

Love Your Garden ITV1, 20.00
Alan Titchmarsh and the team head to Chandlers Ford near Eastleigh in Hampshire this week to turn a neglected suburban back garden into a woodland-style retreat complete with a rustic sunken outdoor living room. The garden is for the Richardson family who are facing a very difficult future. After several very challenging years, father of two, Jason has been taken off the heart and kidney transplant list and survives only by the means of a heavy portable external machine which keeps his heart working and three weekly sessions of kidney dialysis. This means the whole family are now tied very much to their home and desperately need an outdoor space on their doorstep that can become an escape. Friends and family contacted the show and asked for Alan to step in. Despite the team battling some of the worst rain they have ever experienced ever on the programme - the transformation is a triumph. Alan, Katie, Frances and David pack it full of inspiring ideas and share all the usual tips and tricks to help make all of our gardens a little more lovely.

“What’s with the beard”? By Carl pattison from Robot
BEARDS … you either love them, or hate them. Men compliment me on mine, but women don’t seem so happy with them. They cause a stir wherever they go, and, yes, they are still on trend, from long stubble to Santa size. Yet having one isn’t just a case of letting it grow. It’s the same as hair on the head, and needs cutting into shape and grooming. Beards need special shampoo to keep them clean, and conditioners to lock in the moisture and keep them smooth. I always use a beard cream after washing, and oil, too, just to
keep things looking well-kept. If you’re going to sport one, decide on the shape and how long you’re going to grow it. Sometimes, it’s a matter of trial and error. You don’t know until you’ve got one; some grow one then hate it, but at least they’ve tried.
Beards don’t suit everyone, or are liked by everyone, but having one brings both good and bad comments; you have to be quite resilient to pull one off. As with all fashion, including beards, it’s better to be yourself rather than follow the crowd.
Wedding belles by Carl Pattison
We d d i n g s … there’s no bigger day, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t go to one looking your absolute best.
But that’s where the problems start; choosing something to wear, and making sure you tie the whole look together. You should be looking for an outfit at least three months before the date; rushing around at the last minute can cause stress and upset.
Start with the venue; what’s the theme etc? You don’t go to a register-office wedding dressed the same as if it were a 5-star hotel, or a church. Once you know the venue, then it’s a choice of colour and style. Ask the bride’s mother and mother-in-law about their colour choices, and those of the bridesmaids. You don’t want to arrive clashing, or looking like an extra. Try to stick to two, maximum three, colour choices. This makes it easier to
accessorise your outfit. Think about the time of year, too, because you don’t want to be under, or over, dressed. Use accessories to complement your dress; choose shoes and bags to offset your look, rather than match it exactly, and don’t overdo the jewellery. Choose a dress that will see you right through the wedding and which complements you and your style, and you will be talked about for all the right reasons.

Getting in the swim!
Your sofa
POSSIBLY one of the most important pieces of furniture in your holiday-home could be the sofa, whether or not you choose a sofa bed. Sofa beds have developed over the last decade, and are farremoved from those wooden affairs with lumpy, sprung mattresses stowed underneath. Nowadays, it’s possible to get one that is just as comfortable as a normal sofa, where the bed can be pulled out without removing any of the cushions. This saves on space
and storage, and provides extra occupancy for your property, without compromising on either appearance or comfort. Obviously, a lot of time is spent outside because of the fabulous weather in Tenerife, but having a comfortable sofa is still important. And how it looks and fits into your room also matters, as it will probably be one of the focal points of the room. Unfortunately, when people are on holiday, they may not treat your furniture with the respect it deserves. Sun cream can be a problem, particularly some of the longerlasting ones, which can leave a brown residue. Consider using a treated fabric, which can be wiped clean to prevent most common stains. When it comes to budget, sofas are an area where, to a certain extent, you get what you pay for. A cheap sofa can be a false economy if you have to replace it within a year or so, or
if it isn’t comfortable because the filling is sub-standard. Also, a lot of modern sofas are very low backed, which isn’t particularly comfortable. Imagine being able to choose the height of the sofa back, the shape of the arms (whether you like to sit up leaning on the arm, or lay down using the arm as a pillow) and the hardness or softness of the cushions, not to mention the pattern and colour, from a wide range. Well, it is possible, and not as expensive as you might think, if the sofa bed is made by a local craftsman, rather than massproduced for a chain store. And, if you have a sofa that is great in all respects, except for starting to look a bit tatty and tired, why not consider having it re-upholstered instead of buying new? Call Deco Nuevo on 922 789729 and they will come to your home to give you free, noobligation quotes!

Frozen is best WE'RE all aware that berries are very good for our overall health, and that the vitamins they contain spread a number of benefits throughout our body, but is it possible to make them even better for us? The answer is - yes! More and more research is pointing in the direction that freezing fruits can actually make them even healthier. This appears to be the case with blueberries, where anthocyanin concentration is more potent after a short stay in the freezer. Anthocyanins contain a number of antiinflammatory qualities, and are known to benefit your overall brain health. Some research even suggests that anthocyanins may possess anti-carcinogenic properties that could completely revolutionise the medical industry. What does freezing do? When you freeze blueberries (for short OR long periods of time), the low temperatures penetrate deep within the fruit and disrupt the tissue structure. This makes the
anthocyanins more available and absorbable. The berries actually have their sharp, blue color because of the anthocyanins in the tissue. Organic berries already have higher nutritional content than alternatives, but freezing them can actually enhance the following benefits: Improving heart health Eating frozen blueberries can significantly lower your risk of heart disease. This is because the nutrients regulate and relax the elasticity of your arteries in the vascular wall, keeping them from getting damaged.
Consequently, this also improves your blood flow, giving you a healthy blood pressure in the process. Reduced risk of dementia The anthocyanins in the berries can actually improve your memory functions, and protect your brain against cell damage and loss. The protection makes your encoding and retrieval processes more fluid, making it easier to recall information. The berries can also improve your nerve-cell growth, and make communication easier between nerve-cell processes. This actually
slows down the rate that they age, and, ultimately, die. Improved nervous-system health The antioxidants in blueberries provide your nerve cells with protection, as mentioned previously. They also keep your brain healthy from various forms of toxin pollution that it is exposed to every day. They effectively create a safeguard around your nervous system, to keep it healthy and strong for a longer period of time. Improved motor function Older adults, who suffer
from impaired movements above the age of 70, generally perform and behave more functionally after consuming frozen blueberries. They have heightened cognitive ability, which shows improved motor ability in comparison with other men and women in the same age group. Improved digestion The antioxidants in blueberries protect your digestive tract from any damage from outside sources. Alarmingly, people who lack antioxidants in their diets may, consequently, develop cancer as a result of poor gastro-intestinal health. People at risk of developing colon cancer should definitely bring more frozen blueberries into their diets. Blueberries are already so healthy, but freezing them allows you to get the benefits in a higher concentration than refrigerated ones. They will taste just as good, but will be so much healthier without even showing it. Try them out next time you pick up a batch. Grab a few extra ones to pack into the freezer for a few weeks, and make them a regular start to your mornings.

Mr Pedro’s Ice-Cream Parlour
Taste the spice of life By Maggie Rose
TO experience a meal with a difference, offering the healthy and not so healthy, pop along to Mr Pedro’s Ice Cream parlour, on San Blas, Golf del Sur. Sandra, who has lived here for a long time, decided to open the gorgeous premises last December, naming it after her rescue dog Pedro! She saw a gap in the market when a couple of local icecream shops had closed, leaving a dearth of places to buy what I consider to be one of the most favourite things in life. And in this amazing heat we’re experiencing, what better than having ice cream as your treat of the day, and to cool you down? Mr Pedro’s has over 16 flavours, including Maltesers, Cadburys cream egg and Smarties, as well as Sandra’s home-made secret recipe, to name but a few. And they come in various shapes and sizes: cones, tubs and sundaes. The home-made, traditional ice cream is made on the premises from original British recipes, going back to the 19th century. Sandra, who had always been interested in cooking, decided her skills could be used in making ice cream. She has smoothies, all made from 100% pure fruit and veg, and even milky, and she
also provides milk shakes, crepes of different varieties, baked potatoes with a choice of fillings, and tasty sandwiches. Large mugs of tea and coffeee are also available, and the package all goes towards extending your visit to a fully-blown, sit-down meal on the terrace, if you have the time. We perused the menu and decided to start healthily
with a fresh smoothie. My colleague went for a Tropicano, a real holiday treat, and she could taste the coconut and pineapple coming through. Mine was a Kiwi cooler - a real five a day. As I said, healthy! We followed that with a gorgeous sandwich: ham and cheese with mustard, on seedy brown bread … again, healthy!
But the crème de la crème, and maybe not so healthy, was the gorgeous crepe Bananarama, which includes chocolate/hazelnut spread, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. “Ooh” is the word that comes to mind because it really was delicious, and, me being such a chocoholic, it went down an absolute treat! The parlour generates
a genuinely friendly, neighbourhood atmosphere, and we chatted with other customers enjoying themselves on the terrace. We even took a cheeky photo, and they loved it! Remember, ice cream is not just a holiday treat. In fact, with many people it’s a necessity, especially when your day, perhaps, hasn’t gone to plan. And there’s nothing better than to treat yourself to something delicious, to remove the day’s stress. You know it makes sense! Mr Pedro’s Ice Cream Parlour, alongside Tenerife Property Shop and next to the San Blas taxi rank, opens Monday-Thursday, from 11am- 6pm. For more info, phone 689 243 666

SISTER and brother, Arya and Campbell, came to the refuge as tiny pups and quickly found their new home together. Sadly, due to serious family illness, they had to return here when they were six months old.
They are both delightful guys, and are fun-loving, affectionate and sweetnatured. Arya is the larger of the two, at the back in the photo. She has been to puppy classes and is very smart, eager and quick to learn. Her brother, Campbell, is smaller but, what he lacks in size, he makes up for in attitude, and is always ready to play and have fun. They both love their walks, are great off and on lead, and have excellent recall. They’re also fine with other dogs. All in all, they are great family pets and companions. If you would like to meet Arya or Campbell, or both, with a view to offering them a home, please contact us. Meet our dogs

Interesting kitten facts IT’S impossible to resist the large eyes, adorable expressions and fluffy fur of kittens, but did you know ..?
Their eyes open at around a week old, but they can’t see or hear clearly until they are 2-3 weeks. They sleep for an average of 18 hours a day; even more interesting is that a certain growth hormone is only released during sleep. Even newborn kittens can purr, and will do so while nursing, or when their mothers are cleaning them. While their squeaks and squeals are obvious, if you listen closely you’ll hear their contented little motors running. Kittens can see colour once they get their full vision. They rely, very much, on a strong sense of smell that develops at the same time as their eyesight and hearing. They can be right or leftpawed, the same way people are right or left-handed. Cats and kittens can fit their bodies almost anywhere they can squeeze their heads into, so be sure to exercise the utmost care when kitten-proofing your house. Their whiskers are about as long as their bodies are wide; this helps navigation
Accion del Sol News Many of Accion del Sol's dogs, especially the larger ones, are sent to Germany for rehoming, as they have a better chance there of finding new homes. Marion is always looking for people travelling to Germany with Condor, Air Berlin or TuiFly, who would like to help the dogs. It doesn't cost you anything, except a little bit of your time at the airport. Accion del Sol staff check
through new places. All kittens are born with blue eyes, and will have their fully-developed eye colour at around eight weeks old. Adult cats have 30 teeth, but kittens have only 26. They lose these baby teeth when they’re about six months old, and the full set of 30 will grow. The average litter size for cats is 1-9 kittens, but the largest ever recorded was 19! That’s a lot of mouths to feed! If you are considering adding
a kitten to your family, we have beautiful ones for viewing at Vet Express (Torviscas Alto) and Don Perros (Las Chafiras), where, during normal working hours, you can look without any obligation. Adoption is free, but there is a contract of care to sign to say that you will be a responsible owner and have it neutered when old enough. All black kittens are provided with free kitten injections, microchip and neutering, as is the second
kitten if you adopt two kittens of any colour. Contact us via our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com or ring or WhatsApp Maria (English) on 646629129, seven days a week, 9-6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm, on 671282773. All cats and kittens go on trial, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats
and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. Wheelchair Basketball
Adeje wowed by Euros JUST over a week of intense competition at the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships in Adeje meant they had to really go some to make the grand finals out-perform the previous action.
But they delivered handsomely with two superb matches as Holland won the ladies’ crown 5646, and Turkey eclipsed GB men 69-76. Las Torres sports hall was packed with plenty of support for the competing teams, and the fans were very much in evidence as Holland and Germany took to the court to a crescendo of noise, and a forest of their national flags. Bo Kramer set the standard for Holland with an interception of the ball, followed deftly by a welllaunched basket, which spurred them to pull away to take the first quarter 158. But Germany showed determination, with Marieke Miller driving them on to square the game 23-23 at the halfway point. Germany, who will reflect on the third quarter as their downfall, having missed a few free shots, found Holland in less-generous mood. Bo Kramer was on fire, and Mariska Beijer was the player of the final with 23 points. Holland put the pressure on with solid, defensive covering and quick breaks. And once they had opened an 11-point gap, there was no way back for Germany. The final quarter was much tighter, Germany
edging it 14-15, but it was Holland’s title, and there were a few tears of joy as the celebrations begun. The men’s final ensured that Great Britain improve on their ladies’ third place, even before they had begun. They faced Turkey, whom they had defeated in the previous Euros two years ago. The British team were probably slight favourites, but that counted for nothing as Turkey pressured them into making too many fouls in the first two quarters, opening a 36-24 advantage at the halfway stage. The team coaches have to juggle their 12-man squads well. There are different points, depending on players’ disabilities, and these can never go over the set limit for the five players
on court at a time. In the third quarter, Turkey looked like pulling away from GB, but the Brits hung on well to keep within nine points (5849) with the final 10 minutes remaining. Redcar’s Terry Bywater, behind all the best plays as his team reduced the score to 67-64, was GB’s best hope for a thrilling, last-minute finale. But Turkey’s accuracy at the basket powered them on, and Guribulak always had moves to spare as the clock ticked down the final seconds. Revenge was sweet for Turkey against their old rivals, but GB were quick with their congratulations. The mutual respect was clear for all to see, summing up the entire mood of the tournament.
This top-flight competition moves on to Hamburg next year for the World
Championships, with all the teams leaving behind a host of new converts.

It’s pouring with tons A MAGNIFICENT 55 ton-plus scores was the highlight of a closefought game in Valle San Lorenzo, where Spear Chuckers took the trebles to claim a 5-3 result against Bar 180 A. Boothen made it three wins out of three with a comfortable 8-0 whitewash over a struggling Waterfall team. Gaffers travelled to Picasso’s, and, after last week’s setback returned to winning ways by putting seven past the hosts, despite a first 180 of the season for Per. Things are getting better for the boys and girls at Sundowners,
who recorded their first win of the campaign in a superb 6-2 victory against an out-of-sorts Emerald Lounge outfit. The luck of the Irish deserted Dennis and his Palms Pool Bar teammates, beaten 6-2 by The Pub, who admitted that things could have been very different. Scruffy Macs welcomed Ourplace Playboys to San Blas and came out on top with a 7-1 score. James was back on form with a brilliant 180, and Tom and Daniel came back from 2-0 down to take their doubles game. It was a top-of-theleague clash in Division 2, where Legends claimed top-dog status

Naughty’s took the final game against Nutty’s to gain a 4-4 draw. From the feedback received, it appears that every participant is thoroughly enjoying the Friday feeling, so let’s keep it up.
Nadal already geared up for another crown RAFAEL Nadal is looking and playing as though he is in perfect shape to win his third Wimbledon title, after reaching the third round on Wednesday without dropping a set.
The Spaniard’s fans could not have been more delighted, despite British favourite and reigning champion Andy Murray taking exactly the same route during his opening two matches, droppìng fewer games than his old adversary along the way. It has been years since Wimbledon has witnessed 2010 champion Nadal prowling the baseline
so confidently, his focus matched only by the pinpoint accuracy of his ground-strokes. The Spaniard, seeded four this year and looking every inch the player who has twice ruled Wimbledon, has every reason to be confident, judging by his enthralling 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 win over the talented Donald Young. And, despite appearances to the contrary in recent years, partly through injury, he displayed all his grass-court magic as he booked a place in the fourth round. He will face Russia’s powerful young Karen Khachanov, the 30th seed, and, says Nadal: “I think I am doing the right things. I feel myself playing well. But I have a tough opponent and it’s going to be a tough match.”
It is remarkable that Nadal, who missed Wimbledon last year with a wrist injury, has not made the last eight since 2011, when he was defeated by Novak Djokovic in the final. Or that, incredibly, it is now nearly a decade since his final showdown against Federer in 2008, when he won his first title, and eight
years since his last title here, claimed by beating Tomas Berdych. Since then, the Spaniard has endured too many early exits. But Wimbledon has always been a tournament of two distinct halves for him. In the first week, when the grass is usually greasy and the ball skids low, he is there to be shot
at. But in the second week, when the courts harden like concrete, he becomes a live danger. “I don’t know how deep I can go on the draw, but I really don’t think about that now,” he said. “But if I keep playing at the same level that I did the first six months of the season, I have chances to be in a very high-ranking position.” Can he win a third Wimbledon crown after years on the sidelines? Former champ Boris Becker certainly believes he has the ammunition. “From what I have seen so far, he looks strong, he looks healthy and he looks hungry,” said Boris. “And if he gets into the second week, no one will want to play him. He is the ultimate competitor.”

CD Tenerife
See them sneaking out… FINE tuning of CD Tenerife’s near-miss promotion squad has rapidly turned into a salvage operation, and some nifty wheeling and dealing is needed to avoid the club’s usual cold start to a new football season. On the plus side, 29-year-old striker Juan Villar has arrived on a three-year deal from Valladollid. But he was nearly knocked down in the rush of last season’s players heading for the exit. The big departures are Gaku Shibasaki, who looks set for top-flight football with Real Betis, Malaga, Celta Vigo, or Alaves, and Amath, who will be recalled from parent club Atletico Madrid. Gaku had agreed to extend his Santa Cruz stay if promotion were achieved. But the lure of La Liga eclipsed an improved package from Tenerife. Amath seems destined to return to Atletico, especially as they have been banned from signing new players until 2018. Choco Lozano, who has plenty of admirers, is being lured by the Barcelona B team. But Tayron, a January loan arrival from Las Palmas, is keen to stay this side of the water if an agreement can be reached with his parent club. Other players, making just a handful of appearances last season, have not been offered new contracts. These include back-up keeper Falcon, full-back Oriol, injury-
prone midfielder Rachid and ineffective striker Jouini, plus Aaron, who couldn’t live up to his early form. In addition, Cristo Gonzalez, who has upset the club management by insisting he wants to leave, has been warned he might have to serve the final year of his contract in the reserves, or even the third team. Nastic looks like a loan destination for Omar Perdomo. But after his goal-ofthe-season from the halfway line, he must feel hard-doneby to be farmed out. Then there are surprise leavers such as German Sanchez, who’s off to Second Division rivals Granada on a two-year contract. But Tenerife will, at least, receive up to 175,000 euros for him. Long-serving Aitor Sanz is the latest player linked to a move, but one player beaming after the initial dust settled was Alberto, another homegrown player who excelled last season. He is equally at home in central defence or midfield, and his contract has been extended until 2020.
There were brief hopes that legendary striker Nino would return from Elche, but he has decided to stay put. And anyway, at 37, he would have been a gamble. But perhaps near-namesake Nano will be the prodigal son. The 22-year-old, from La Laguna, was showing signs of being the next scoring star. Yet he jumped ship to Eibar, just one hour before the first home league game at the end of the August transfer window. A leg injury and poor form has left his new bosses open to offloading him, so who knows? Tenerife coach Pep Marti has used his contacts at former club Mallorca, and 21-yearold midfielder Damia Sabater looks likely to arrive in Santa Cruz on loan in the next few days. The Heliodoro Stadium phones will be red-hot over the next few weeks as deals are brokered. A few quality additions would be rather handy... but the squad also needs quantity. The first confirmed preseason friendly is against La Liga’s Deportivo in the annual Teide Trophy game, at La Orotava on 12th August.
Sergio’s big-time return
FROM La Laguna to America’s NBA league, Sergio Rodriguez has become a worldclass player, and he returns home next month to show off his skills for Spain in a three-team tournament.
Ladies’ Football
Maria Jose’s big boost GOALS in her boots, plus the family’s pedigree, which promises more, heralds the return of Maria Jose Perez to Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife, after her year at Levante. It is a big boost for the El Medano-based squad, as they prepare for another season in Spain’s elite Premier League. Maria Jose was one of the driving influences in the team’s promotion to the top level, and they have established themselves as a side who can compete for honours.
Basketball
Her cousin, Ayoze Perez, has taken goals to Newcastle, and she should guarantee more of the same to push Tenerife upwards, following
their top-six finish and a semi-final appearance in the Copa del Reina (Queen’s Cup). Sisters Noelia and Natalia Ramos have headed in the other direction, joining Levante. But there are other fresh recruits for the new campaign. These include keeper Pili Gonzalez, back after a season with Tacuense, who failed to keep their Premier status, despite her heroics between the posts. Coach Toni Ayala is still working on more recruits to ensure that Tenerife build on their success, and continue to attract 600-plus crowds to their El Medano stadium.
Sergio (pictured), spotted as a teenage prospect at CB Canarias, was snapped up by Estudiantes for the Spanish Elite League in 2004. And further success as a Spain international earned him a call-up from Phoenix Suns in 2006. His career still blazes brightly after stop-offs at Philadelphia 76ers, Portland Timbers and Real Madrid, plus a second chance with Philadelphia, where he is still a big cheese at 31. The crowd at La Laguna’s Pabellon Santiago Martin will give him a warm homecoming with the Spanish team when they take on Tunisia and Belgium in a three-team challenge, from 7-9th August. The bearded wonder
delighted young hopefuls in Santa Cruz last week by demonstrating his skills at a summer training camp. And his heart will beat with pride when he takes to the Iberostar Tenerife court for the first time. The much smaller court of CB Canarias, on the other side of La Laguna, was where he learned his game, decades before Iberostar moved to their current 5,000-seater stadium. His brief visit will inspire hopes that he might return to grace the Iberostar team towards the end of his American adventure. But at present, Sergio still has plenty to offer in the multi-million setting of the NBA.

NEW SERVICE FROM SEBASTIAN & ST JAMES INTERNATIONAL Take the stress out of funeral planning Whether you spend a few months in Tenerife, a year, or you have lived here over 20 years and speak Spanish, this information is relevant to you. A funeral plan is a way of paying for your funeral upfront so that your relatives don’t have to find the money to cover the cost themselves. With nothing in place, it is not easy for those left behind to make the arrangements, particularly from the UK, in less than 48 hours, with all costs payable in advance. We can offer a choice of three plans which allow you to choose the type of funeral you want;cremation or burial, the plan can even include repatriation to the UK if you wish. We know that there are a number of different options available which will cover the cost of a funeral, as well as “pay out money”, such as a life insurance policy, but not all pay in 24 hours, and not all UK options cover you in Tenerife. Different insurances and plans work differently depending on what you want to cover, normally these are payable for life, so the payments may well be greater than the benefits received. You need the right funeral plan for your circumstances. Talk to us A funeral plan must be the right option for you, so talk to us about our different plans. You can pay for a fixed cost funeral plan, over 60 months, interest free, and pay as little as €1.72 a day depending on which plan you choose. With fixed cost plans starting at €3650, it makes sense.
