Thomas Cook win first fraud holiday case Issue 1013 14th July - 20th July 2017

HOLIDAY company Thomas Cook have secured a huge victory for all tour operators in Britain, after defeating a “sickness compensation claim by a Liverpool couple. It will surely worry the thousands of food-bug fiddlers, who thought they were on to an easy thing. Continued on Page 3

Couple must fork out £3,744 compensation Continued from Front Now, with UK Prime Minister Theresa May and her Government pledging their allegiance to tour operators, with Spanish authorities alongside them, threatening legal action against fake claims, there could be even more backtracking by claimants. Last week, we reported that one law firm had put forward a staggering 1,800 claims, only for every one to be withdrawn. And a warning for all holiday fraudsters is that the “fundamentally-dishonest” claim against Thomas Cook, by Julie Lavelle, 33, and her 34-year-old partner, Michael McIntyre, has cost the couple £3,744 in compensation. They had demanded £10,000 from the travel company because, they said, they and their two daughters all suffered vomiting and diarrhoea during their 2013 holiday at Gran Canaria’s Parque Cristobal Hotel. Yet they never mentioned their condition to hotel staff, or tour representatives in the resort, said the travel firm’s lawyers at Liverpool’s county court. Mr McIntyre even admitted in court that he’d had six pints of beer in Las Palmas Airport while awaiting the flight home, when he was supposed to have had gastro-enteritis. He then completed a holiday questionnaire on the plane, and left the section on illness unanswered. Yet he responded that the hotel service received was “good” or “excellent” to the majority of questions, added the firm’s lawyers. The couple’s downfall

secured a first victory for Thomas Cook in the company’s campaign against false holidaysickness claims, Judge Juliet Herzog agreeing that their claim was dishonest. Travel trade organisation ABTA, very much aware of the situation, launched a campaign last month to stop the huge spike in claims, while authorities in the UK and Spain are determined to stamp out this growing trend. In the past year, tens of thousands of UK holidaymakers have made claims - worth around £3,000 to £5,000 each - despite the reported sickness levels in resorts remaining stable. Thomas Cook managing director Chris Mottershead said the hearing was the first of a number of cases the company will challenge in court. He added: “We’re pleased that the judge found in our favour. It’s not comfortable for us to be in court,

questioning our customers’ credibility. “But the significant increase in unreported illness-claims, being received by the travel industry, threatens holidays for all UK customers. “This case follows an increasingly-common pattern for these claims, with a previously-unreported illness being raised years after the holiday, with no medical or other evidence to support the illness. “In these cases we will not accept liability, and we will take further action, where we believe it is necessary, to protect all our customers.” The ABTA “Stop Sickness Scams” campaign believes that legislation, designed to halt the surge in fraudulent whiplash claims by capping the legal fees charged by solicitors, has fuelled the rise in travel-sickness reports, because it does not apply to incidents overseas. But the campaign also warns that holidaymakers, pursuing fake or

exaggerated claims, risk ending up in prison, either in the UK or abroad. The UK Government’s initiative follows concerns from the travel industry of the enormous number of false insurance-claims for gastric illnesses, fuelled, in part, by touts operating in European resorts. But the increase of British claims, reckoned to be as high as 500% since 2013, is not experienced in other European countries. This, undoubtedly, raises suspicions over the huge scale of bogus claims, and is damaging the UK’s reputation overseas. The clamp-down, reiterated by the UK ministers, comes on the heels of these fraudsters, as highlighted by Canarian Weekly last week. And, because of these claim increases, many tour operators appear to settle them out of court, which pushes the industry’s costs up. In turn, this raises fears of higher package-holiday

prices for the majority of law-abiding holiday-makers. British ministers are adamant they want to reduce cash incentives for claimants to bring dodgy claims against the tour operators. Under these proposals, the claimants would pay a prescribed sum, depending on the value of the claim, which would make the cost of defending a claim predictable. The Government’s Justice Secretary, David Lidington, said on Monday: “Our message to those who make false claims is clear: your actions are damaging, and will not be tolerated. “We are addressing this issue, and will continue to explore, further, steps we can take. This government is absolutely determined to tackle the compensation culture, which has penalised the honest majority for too long.” The Ministry of Justice added: “We have been liaising with ABTA and other industry representatives, to understand the underlying problems and identify the most appropriate and effective response. “The Government is committed to tackling all fraudulent claims, and the Claims Management Regulator has taken significant steps in this area. It is working together with the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority to this end.” And there is an optimistic note from the Ministry of Justice, which said: “The vast majority of holidaymakers will not make false claims, and those with a genuine grievance will still be able to claim damages.”

Man steals taxi crash with baby in it Motorway

A SLICK car thief hijacked a taxi at Tenerife North airport as a family and their luggage were dropped off, driving away with a fivemonth-old baby boy still on the back seat. The Moroccan family, mum, dad and two older

daughters, arrived at the airport at 3pm last Sunday and went to help the driver unload the cases, leaving

the infant inside because of the wind and rain. At this stage, the unsuspecting thief jumped into the car and fled. The family and cabbie were horrified, and the thief must have been concerned after discovering the baby on board. The taxi driver notified the airport’s National Police, who alerted officers in La Laguna and Santa Cruz.

Happily, 12 minutes later, the crisis was over because the car, a Toyota Corolla, was found in a Santa Cruz parking lot, with the baby safe and well in the back seat. He was soon reunited with his frantic parents. National Police have been studying CCTV footage from the airport and the parking area, in the hope of identifying the thief.

A third rocky ride by anti-transgender bus AN anti-transgender campaign, run on a bus by Spain’s ultra-conservative Catholic group Hazte Oír (Make Yourself Heard), has had a stormy welcome in Santiago de Chile.

After controversial tours through Spain and the US, seven people were arrested during demonstrations that saw police using water cannons against protesters, trying to halt the progress of the vehicle at the centre of the controversial campaign. Meanwhile, Chile’s Movement for Homosexual Liberation (MOVILH), which backs gay marriage in the country, made its own statement by rolling out its blue bus as a form of counter-campaign. The Hazte Oír vehicle’s debut in the Chilean capital was organised by a coalition of conservative Christian groups, including CitizenGO, the larger group to which the Catholics belong. The vehicle, dubbed the “Freedom Bus” on the Chilean leg of its tour, bore the slogan “Nicolas has the right to both a mother and a father”. That was a clear reference to a 2014 campaign by MOVILH under the banner “Nicolas has two fathers,” according to Chilean TV station T13. Several groups had called

TWO people were slightly injured yesterday afternoon when two cars collided on the TF-1, at Costa Adeje, heading towards Guia de Isora. It happened as both vehicles drove on to the motorway from the Las Americas junction, opposite Siam Mall.

THE terrace of Playa Paraiso restaurant Paris Folie’s was destroyed by fire in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday). Firefighters from San Miguel and Adeje joined forces to extinguish the blaze, the cause of which is being investigated.

Greenhouse marijuana on Chilean President Michelle Bachelet’s government to ban the campaign, but the controversial bus was allowed to take to the roads, finally. Government spokesperson Paula Narváez suggested, several days ago, that the campaign promoted intolerance. “Instead of being called the Freedom Bus, it should be called the Intolerance Bus,” she said. In an interview with T13 Radio, Teresa García, spokesperson for Hazte Oir, argued that the group’s aim was to “denounce government policies and laws that oblige children to be brought up according to certain emotional

and sexual norms”. She added: “Parents have the right to decide on this upbringing, not governments.” The group’s aim is to “denounce government policies that oblige children to be brought up according to certain emotional and sexual norms”. Hazte Oír launched its bus campaign in Spain, responding to a publicawareness campaign run by the Basque advocacy group Chrysallis Euskal Herria, which is an association of families with transgender children. The group used the slogan “There are girls with penises and boys with vulvas,” in a

poster campaign, funded by a mystery New York donor. But the bright-orange bus, used by the ultraconservative Catholic group, was banned from Madrid roads, authorities saying it could constitute a hate crime. The campaign vehicle was later pelted with eggs as it made its way across Spain, while one woman was said to be injured while trying to block its progress. In New York, the vehicle was dubbed the “Hate Bus”, with Chelsea Clinton among those lining up against the campaign, whose organisers say they are defending free speech.

A HUGE haul of 2,500 marijuana plants was seized from a 5,000sq/m greenhouse in the North yesterday (Thursday) by Local Police, in collaboration with the Guardia Civil. The greenhouse was found on a farm in Higueritas, Guía de Isora, and three people have so far been arrested. But the case in ongoing. Ángeles González, the local Council’s Citizen Security Councillor, has congratulated members of this joint task-force, in defence of public health.

Spain’s tourists are hitting new heights

SPAIN has beaten its tourism record for the seventh consecutive year, hosting 75.3 million foreign visitors in 2016. This figure represents a 9.9% increase of 7.2 million on the previous year, according to early figures from Spain’s Energy and Tourism Ministry. And the country is already on track to topple those numbers this year! The most popular tourist region was Catalonia, with 17 million visitors from January to November (3.8% more than in 2015). The Balearic Islands welcomed 12.9m visitors, and the Canary Islands were next on the list with 12m. Another big plus for the Canaries was the Eurostat figures, determining that the islands were most popular for Europe visitors last year, registering 94 million overnight stays, while Catalunya recorded just over 70m. As expected, people from the UK, France and Germany provided the largest share of foreigners to Spain last year.

They forked out a total of 77bn euros, which was 8.3% more than in 2015, while average per capita spending was 1,023 euros, a 3.75% improvement. The average daily amount spent by visitors was 138 euros, again topping 2015 figures by 6.5%. A total of 16.9m Brits went there, 12.3% more than a year earlier, and confirmation that Brexit is hardly denting the numbers. Álvaro Nadal, Spain’s Energy and Tourism Minister, also pointed out the strong growth for regions in the country’s interior: visitor numbers to the region of Aragon soared 67.4%, while Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura also saw healthy jumps of 32.8% and 31.3%, respectively. Nadal was satisfied

with the country’s 2016 tourism figures, but he stressed the need to create economic policy, aimed at “consolidating a very important sector”. It was described by the World Economic Forum in 2015 as the most competitive in the world, and Spain is well aware of that factor. The tourism industry has been an important driver of Spain’s economy over the course of the crisis, contributing more than 10% to GDP, and providing 11% of jobs. However, there are concerns over the sustainability of its low-cost, sand-and-sun model. In a recent study, consultants Ernst & Young said that Spain would have to begin targeting high-end tourists, “unashamedly”, with a co-ordinated plan. The company pointed out that although Europeans made up 89.4% of the country’s total number of visitors, they spent just 135 euros daily, compared with the Chinese tourists’ 960 euros, and the 672 euros dished out by US holidaymakers and visitors.

Bus-driver was using a mobile

THE driver of a La Palma micro-bus is being investigated by the Guardia Civil for reckless driving, because, it is alleged, he used his mobile phone while driving. He was on the way from Puntagorda to Barlovento on 6th July at around 1pm. And, during the journey, a passenger recorded a video of him using the mobile phone - texting messages and talking repeatedly. The video shows the vehicle crossing into the other lane repeatedly on a mountain road, and Guardia officers have filed the video and police report with Santa Cruz of La Palma Courts.

REGIONAL authorities on the Balearic Islands have fined Spanish airline Iberia 25,000 euros for demanding that women seeking cabin-crew jobs must undergo pregnancy tests. This was part of their application process, but it constitutes a serious violation of labour law on the basis of discrimination, says the regional labour department. But sources from the former flag-carrier announced last Sunday that it would no longer require such a test, and that applicants would have the option of telling the airline whether or not they were pregnant. Labour department sources said they became aware of the practice last year during a campaign aimed to combat discrimination in the workplace. Iberia argued that the aim of the test was to “avoid assigning a task that would put the pregnancy at risk”. As well as those for pregnancy, other medical checkups were also required, both for male and female candidates. In its defence, the airline, which, along with Aer Lingus, British Airways and Vueling, is owned by International Airlines

5 CW

Iberia’s ‘pregnant’ clause

Group (IAG) holding company, argued that the practice was commonplace throughout Spain. It also formed part of the firm’s medical checkup, once candidates had passed one of the stages of the selection process. Iberia also argued that the aim of the test was merely to “avoid assigning them tasks that would put their pregnancies at risk”. The company also claimed that it had never refused to employ someone because she was pregnant. It is the first time a fine has been imposed in the Balearic Islands for serious discrimination on the basis of sex. The airline can appeal the decision with the regional labour department. But should that be rejected, it will have to turn to the courts to take the matter further.

Costa Adeje renovations could run to 260m euros THE cost of improving tourist zones in Costa Adeje could top a staggering 260m euros, according to Council officials. This figure emerged from an Adeje Tourism Council meeting in the Hard Rock Hotel with Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, alongside Councillors for tourism and the Presidency, Ermitas Moreira García and Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, respectively. There was also a healthy turnout from representatives of Costa Adeje’s tourism sector: Ashotel (the provincial hoteliers’ association), CIT (centre for tourism initiatives), CEST (South Tenerife business circle), and other leaders working in this area. The agenda offered a presentation of various projects under way in the zone, and those on the point of starting, all to enhance tourism. These took in plans from the International Tourism Forum and the Atlantic Tourism Laboratory. The meeting also discussed sustainable development plans and the recentlyobtained Biosphere Tourism Destination certificate, granted to Costa Adeje. Delegates proposed a number of plans for debate at insular and regional level, regarding connectivity, mobility and the borough’s

vulnerabilities. This included a need for discussion on the construction of a second runway and terminal at Tenerife South Airport, and daily congestion problems along the TF-1 motorway. The Adeje Mayor, alongside Ashotel’s Victoria López and Francisco Caler, head of the University of La Laguna’s Department of Economics, held a press conference in which they outlined the Council’s priorities. Rodríguez Fraga stressed the importance of plans to improve and upgrade tourism infrastructures in Costa Adeje. In the coming years, he said, the amount available for investment in the area could reach 135m euros, and that sum had already been sought from PITCAN, the Canarian Tourism Investment Plan. “We are seeking to insure that public investment

matches private funding in the areas of renovation and improvements in tourist spaces … the areas that are the economic bread and butter of the region,” he said. Rodríguez Fraga pointed out the positive effects already being felt as a result of modernisation projects, adding that it was important the Adeje public administrations didn’t get left behind. “We have to renovate and create new environments, modern and attractive, for our visitors,” he said. The Mayor confirmed that there were already promises of over 130m euros from private investors, so, with public funding to match that, overall spending could top 260m euros in the region. The Adeje chief referred to a number of projects already underway in strategic areas of Costa Adeje, including

Calle Roma, Calle París, Calle Uruguay and Calle Paraguay, the maritime walkway in Playa Paraíso and Salytien’s open area. “In 2017, we have already seen spending of 15m euros, almost all of that Councilfunded”, he said, adding that this meant generating spaces for tourists and residents, those who live here, who sustain our economy.” Adeje’s Municipal Tourism Council, established in 1988, has operated through a number of different tourism development phases. Its primary aim is to recognise and work on the premise that the position of Costa Adeje as a leader in the tourism sector is the responsibility of everyone involved, and to work and speak on behalf of the borough in seeking private and public support, channelled through participative bodies.

The Tourism Council also explained the incorporation of Adeje into the Canarian Tourism Borough Association, and the creation of LAT, the Atlantic Tourism Laboratory, whose objective is development and training in the sector, together with sharing tourism information and knowledge with all the relevant agents. This includes an exchange of ideas among those involved, and making sure that the lives of the people who live here are, generally, improved. The Tourism Council also discussed international issues affecting the industry, looking, for instance, at how some competitor destinations are in a process of recovery. It also spoke of the economic effects Brexit could have on the market sector, given the huge importance of British holiday-makers.

Are you ready for this summer uni? ADEJE’S Summer University is celebrating 25 years since it first opened its doors to students in South Tenerife. The courses offered, drawn up by the University of La Laguna and the local council, always have a healthy inclusion of tourismrelated topics, given that the industry is the economic motor for these islands. And this year’s inaugural address will be made today (Friday), in the Adeje Convento at midday, by Carlos Vogeler, executive director for member relations of the World Tourism Organisation.

The Summer University offers a range or courses, many of which can help a student accumulate university credits. But they are also designed with the

general public in mind. The university opens with a course in recognising autism and resources for teachers and families. Focusing on tourism, you

could attend lectures on “the sharing economy the end of tourism as we know it?”, on communication and democracy in the digital age, on managing the change in tourism governance, finance and digital transformation (in English), or on sports management. Of more specific interest, there is a course on new developments in surgery, another on art, culture and law, and on vigilance and control of employment benefits. The range of workshops also sees sessions on tourismrelated topics, on learning for highly-intelligent/gifted students, on how to be assertive in public, and

on Canarian wines. And another topic relates to how to evolve your talent as a communicator/journalist. Unless otherwise stated, courses and workshops are in Spanish. The full programme of courses and workshops is online, www. adeje.es/uva The courses are all held during the mornings, from 9am-2pm, and the workshops are scheduled for the afternoons (4-8pm). The courses cost 25 euros and workshops just 10 euros. To register for one or more of these classes, you can do so online, at www.uvadeje. es, at the University of La Laguna (922 319 616) or in the Adeje Cultural Centre (922 756 246)

Loro Parque and Morgan are still defying the critics MORGAN the Orca is still alive and kicking at Loro Parque, despite years of criticism by protesters that she would die if she were not returned to her natural habitat, in the sea. In fact, after seven years, she has nearly reached her adult size, and weighs more than 2,100kg. Now, Loro Parque officials are hitting back at those organisations, which, continually, denounce the zoo, even though it has legal backing, endorsed by the highest professional sources, for its handling of the Morgan affair. In a statement reaffirming its good name, Loro Parque is aware that the antibrigade will continue to alarm people whenever possible, even though they cannot prove their so-called facts. Loro Parque says: It sounds absurd that, after seven years since Morgan appeared, dying, on the Dutch coast, and five judicial pronouncements stated that her return to the sea would mean her death, there are still organisations committed to denouncing Loro Parque, and demanding her release. But that is a well-known strategy of some self-

proclaimed animalistic groups: seeking the impact on the media and social networks to get attention and funds. Yet they know perfectly well that Morgan has no chance of being released, and that there was a firm statement from the highest Dutch court, in 2014, that ratifies it. The Free Morgan Foundation has got us used to the “scandal” strategy. It files a complaint against Loro Parque; it publishes campaigns in the media, creating social alarm and worrying honest people, who love animals; thus, obtaining funds for its organisation. But when leading administrations dismiss and reject

these allegations as unfounded, the Free Morgan Foundation never recognises its mistake. And NEVER makes it public. Its officials do not even put negative resolutions on their website to acknowledge its members. That is fraud. Last week, the Dutch CITES Authority dismissed the last appeal filed by the Free Morgan Foundation, raised on the alleged illegality of Morgan’s CITES permit. A few months ago, the same institution responded that the charge of the Free Morgan Foundation was unfounded, since Loro Parque carries out scientific research with orcas, and that it is not incompatible

with the education and awareness activities it promotes, with the permit issued in 2011. The CITES Spanish authority (also where the Free Morgan Foundation sent its protest) responded in the same terms in January this year: “The transfer of the whale, Morgan, from Harderwijk Dolfinarium in Holland, to the facilities of Loro Parque in Tenerife, in 2011, was carried out fulfilling the provisions of Article 9 of Regulation (EC) 338/97, and endorsed by the Dutch State Council, ruling that the return of the animal to the ocean was neither an alternative, nor a

satisfactory solution.” However, do not bother looking because you will not find this information on the Free Morgan Foundation page. Unfortunately, we know this will not be the last complaint. We are sure that the Free Morgan Foundation, and some other minority groups, will continue using the same “scandal” strategy, simply because it’s economically profitable for them. Meanwhile, Morgan is happy with her new family. She has almost reached adult size and weighs more than 2,100kg. And her well-being is beyond doubt. During a recent audit at Loro Parque by the American Humane Association, an organisation which looks out for the well-being of animals around the world, it reported: “The activity and energy of killer whales is comforting. Coaches conduct six training sessions and three daily presentations; this stimulation facilitates a well-being, which is exceptionally positive for the six orcas.” This, along with obtaining the highest rating (100%) of ABTA, the British Association of Travel Agents’ welfare standards, audited by Global Spirit, is what most satisfies us, the people who work at Loro Parque every day for the welfare of Morgan, and the thousands of animals under our care.

Wheels on fire, with Coldplay! SPECTATORS in a packed Dublin stadium crowdsurfed a wheelchair-bound man to the front of the stage at a Coldplay gig. But they couldn’t believe it when 29-year-old Rob was invited on to the Croke Park stage by frontman Chris Martin. Martin moved speakers out of the way quickly, and pulled Rob’s wheelchair onstage, as the crowd pushed it. The audience cheered with delight when Rob and the superstar singer hugged

and chatted. Chris then

Rob then pulled out a harmonica and played along while Chris began singing: “Well here we are in Dublin, me and my friend Rob, “He is 29 years old and

training is his job, “Well here we are in Dublin and what an awesome crowd, “I’ve been all over the world and I’ve never seen anybody so loud, “Well we’ve been around the whole world, Japan and the USA, But Dublin, Dublin, Ireland is where I want to play.” Needless to say, the crowd again erupted in delight at this unusual interruption to an outstanding gig from superstars Coldplay.

NEWS IN BRIEF Girl’s tragic car crash

14th July - 20th July 2017

Smart way to boil the kettle - and cheaper

A WOMAN aged 20 died after a head-on crash last Sunday morning on the TF-5 in Los Realejos. Four other people, aged 20 to 50, were seriously injured and trapped in the two vehicles. Fire-fighters had to cut them out of the cars before paramedics could treat them. Another 20-year-old woman, who suffered a serious abdominal injury, and a man aged 23, with serious injuries to his arms, were both transferred to the University Hospital. The two other injured men, aged 43 and 50, were taken to Candelaria Hospital and Hospiten Bellevue, respectively, for further medical treatment.

Bathroom snooper nicked

A MAN in Gran Canaria has been arrested by National Police officers after installing a CCTV camera in his neighbours’ bathroom. The 43-year-old, entering with no prior police record, was held for breaking and entry, and invasion of privacy. He used a key supplied by the trusting couple in case of emergencies, and, once inside, he hid the camera in their bathroom. Having discovered the device after noticing a flickering light, which came on when the camera was recording, they filed a denuncia with the National Police. Cops who examined the camera found footage of the neighbour hiding the key, and footage of the couple using the bathroom. It was all they needed to arrest the neighbour.

Driver’s wall of death

A DRIVER, aged 53, died instantly after smashing his car into an Arafo wall on the TF281 road, in the north-east of Tenerife, at 5.49am on Tuesday. Paramedics confirmed his death, but fire-fighters had to cut open the vehicle to retrieve the victim’s body.

All bets off for gambler

ADEJE Local Police have collared a 40-year-old Venezuelan woman for, allegedly, issuing death threats and resisting arrest. She was believed to have spent more than 6,000 euros on gambling machines at San Eugenio shopping centre’s arcade in Costa Adeje, and then threatened to kill an employee because, she said, he had stolen her money. The staff, faced with aggressive conduct from the South American, notified the Local Police, who confirmed her behaviour and, eventually, arrested her. She was taken to Hospiten Sur, where medical personal advised that she be transferred to Candelaria Hospital’s Psychiatric unit for assessment.

SPAIN will be the first European country to replace fully the old analogue electricity meters with digital, remotely- operated versions, once it has fitted them all by the end of 2018. The idea of the new “smart” meters is that all householders or traders can work out their consumption by the minute. They can also be read from a central office without workers having to do so manually. Customers will, therefore, be able to work out at what times of day the most power is used, and adjust accordingly to save money. They will also be able to alter the power level on demand. It can be so frustrating knowing that boiling the kettle when the washing machine is on can cause the electricity to trip. But many consumers prefer not to upgrade their supply because this “overload warning” acts as a brake, and prevents their usage being too high. Yet smart meters allow them to increase the wattage temporarily, so they can use the oven, microwave and dishwasher all at once, then turn it back down. “Estimated” readings will no longer apply, thank goodness! They are inaccurate and too low, and can lead to the subsequent bill being much higher to compensate.

But with a smart meter, all readings are correct because the power board has only to look at a computer. Fixing breakdowns or supply cuts will also be much quicker and easier. And by the time every household and all business premises in Spain have “smart” meters, it will be impossible for fraudsters to hook up to someone else’s supply to steal their electricity. Neighbourhoods affected by squatters, or by clandestine marijuana plantations, remain a huge headache for authorities, electricity boards and, particularly, customers. Even where the illegal occupants hook up to the public supply, rather than tapping into another person’s and forcing up their bills, the “leakage” caused by fraudulent use pushes the price up for everyone. But this will be a thing of the past by next year. Many other countries are considering installing, or have already installed, smart meters. But Spain, a world leader in this respect, is one step ahead of everyone else, according to GTM Research, which is part of world-leading energy experts Greentech Media. The European Commission has ordered all EU member States to ensure that 80% of its meters are “smart” by the year 2020, although considerable delays are expected. Only Spain and the UK have decided to substitute all meters, and they have given themselves a deadline,

Spain’s self-imposed timelimit coming first. Elsewhere, Germany has decided to stick to the 80% limit, while France, The Netherlands and Denmark intend to replace 95% of meters. Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Luxembourg have already finished their smartmeter fittings, because they started earlier than the rest of Europe. But they have chosen not to do so with every single home or business in the country, unlike the UK and Spain. This means Spain will, by New Year’s Eve 2018, be the only country in Europe, if not the world, to have done away with analogue meters completely. Its plan was to replace seven in 10 meters with digital versions by the end of last year, although it managed just 62%. By company, Gas Natural Fenosa and Endesa have each replaced 86% of their meters; Iberdrola, 90%; EDP, 78.5%, and Viesgo has already finished. But the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has warned that all electricity boards must inform their customers clearly about the new meters before they are fitted, how they work and whether this will affect their bills, since many will be unaware of these issues. Already, the CNMC has announced plans to take action against around 156 small suppliers for flouting this rule.

Body on beach

THE body of a 49-yearold woman was found on Wednesday on Las Teresitas beach, in Santa Cruz. She was said to be homeless, usually living in the construction booths opposite the Las Teresitas entrance with her partner, who notified the Local Police. They informed emergency services to send paramedics, who certified the woman’s death. An investigation is ongoing.

Biker dies

A BIKER, seriously injured after colliding with a car on the road parallel to the TF-1 near Adeje’s Hipertrebol, last Sunday morning, died later at Hospiten Sur. Paramedics stabilised him, but, while transferring the man to Candelaria Hospital, his condition deteriorated rapidly, so the ambulance stopped at Hospiten Sur. Unfortunately, he suffered a heart attack there and passed away, despite the attempts of three members of staff to resuscitate him.

JUAN RETURNS, TO HIT HEIGHTS

LOVERS of Latin music are in for a real treat tomorrow (Saturday) with Juan Luis Guerra taking to the Golf Costa Adeje stage.

The Dominican Republic singer, considered by many to be one of the top LatinAmerican musicians of the day, returns to Adeje (his third time playing in South Tenerife). He will be preceded on stage by top Cuban hip-hop group Orishas, who have reformed after a seven-year break. Juan Luis Guerra (pictured), has sold over 30 million records, winning many Grammys and Latin Grammys. He belongs to a growing group of internationallyrecognised Latin artists, and his popular merengue and Afro-Latin fusion style has won him considerable success throughout Latin America. But Juan does not limit himself to one style of music, incorporating diverse

rhythms like merengue, bachata-fusion, balada, salsa, gospel… and even rock ‘n’ roll! Orishas, with two Latin Grammys under their musical belt, have been listed by TIME magazines in the top-10 non-US bands. While the group were born in Paris in 1998, they are, in essence, a hip-hop group from Havana.

The band’s founding members are Yutuel Romera, Ruzzo Medina, Roldán González and FlacoPro, and, for this concert, Yutuel, Ruzzo and Roldán will be joined on stage by two trombonists, a keyboard player, a percussionist and a DJ. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, at a press conference, mentioned Guerra’s strong connection to his Tenerife public, adding that everyone was looking forward to an excellent event, as part of the Adeje summer programme. He said it was important for visitors to Adeje to have these “quality out-door events such as this one” to enhance their holiday experience. He added that this particular concert, of Latino music, “also has a lot to do with our identity, our culture, and our history.” Tickets for the concert are on sale through Ticketmaster.es, Ticketea. com, canariasviaja.com, entrees.es and El Corte Ingles.

There will also be tickets on sale at the site from 5pm on the day of the concert. According to organisers, the show will feature top-class sound and lighting, and a number of giant screens to guarantee full views for all. Doors, by the Avenida Ayyto, will open to the public at 5pm, with Orishas taking to the stage at 7pm and Juan Luis Guerra just before 9pm. For security reasons, children under-six are not allowed to attend the concert, and those between the ages of 6-16 must be accompanied by an adult. Concert-goers will not be allowed to enter the zone with food, drink, selfiesticks, or items that might be potential weapons. The organisers also remind people that, as is the norm, and for reasons of copyright, any photography or filming of the concert is strictly forbidden. The concert is co-sponsored by Adeje Council and Cepsa, in collaboration with Golf Costa Adeje, Volkswagen, Sononpluss, Dorada sin con Limón and Pepsi Max Zero.

Tragic death plunge by Spanish acrobat

A SPANISH acrobatdancer, based in the Sussex resort of Brighton, fell 100ft to his death from a suspended cage in front of around 45,000 spectators during a Madrid concert.

The tragedy occurred on the second day of Spain’s Mad Cool Festival last Friday night, shortly before US headline act Green Day were set to take the stage. Shocking videos posted on YouTube showed the moment when the harness around his waist snapped, leaving him toppling. Rescue workers and police

rushed to help the 42-yearold, Madrid-born acrobat from the cube, which had been hoisted above the stage, it was understood, as part of his tribute to Prince. But he was later confirmed dead as a result of his injuries. Officers from the Judicial Police began analysing videos of the incident, just a few metres from the Caja Mágica site’s main stage. They were trying to establish why the safety harness failed, or whether he had fastened it properly. They have interviewed members of the festival’s organisation team, and members of the crew, who were on the stage when Pedro fell to his death. He was a highly-experienced

acrobat and dancer, who also owned a studio for sports massage and acupuncture therapy in Brighton. In addition, he was director of the “In Fact” performingarts company, also based there, which performed under the Ciadehecho name in Spain. The festival was delayed for about 30 minutes, but organisers decided to continue with the scheduled performances. The decision angered many concert-goers, who took to social media to criticise the festival, and the Green Day band for performing after the accident, even though they knew nothing of the tragedy. A statement by the organisers read: “Mad Cool Festival regrets the terrible accident, but for security and safety reasons, the festival decided to continue with its programming. We send our most sincere

condolences to all his family.” Later that day, they released a longer press statement, explaining, among other things, that they decided not to cancel the event to prevent causing panic among the crowd. And on Twitter, Green Day told fans they had no idea of what had happened until after their performance. “We just got off stage at Mad Cool Festival to disturbing news.” the band wrote. “A very brave artist named Pedro lost his life tonight in a tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.” The American rock band also hit back at criticism that they “ignored” the tragedy, claiming they were half-a-mile away and were unaware of the incident. The group’s frontman, guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong, posted a lengthy

statement on their website refuting the criticism. He said the band were told there was some sort of security issue causing a delay and had “no clue” about what had happened. His comments came as a full investigation began into the talented Spaniard’s death, to determine if it had been down to human error or external factors. It was believed that the entertainer might have had trouble with his safety ropes as he performed breathtaking tricks in the box suspended over the audience. Many of the spectators thought it was all part of the act, or that a dummy had fallen on to the stage. The horrific accident happened as the performer was descending in an illuminated box for a stunt during a break between British Band Alt-J and Green Day.

Going bananas for marijuana! GUARDIA Civil officers have discovered a San Miguel marijuana plantation, where bananas once grew. An investigation was carried out after patrol officers noticed a strong marijuana odour coming from the banana plantation. After inspecting the exterior, officers noticed that the property was overloaded with security measures for growing bananas, such as metal

sheets, cameras and guards. Further investigation by the Guardia revealed that the property was rented

to an Arona marijuana consumer association, and that large quantities of the drug had been planted and processed on the premises.

The association’s board of directors was registered with Social Security, with perceived salaries for working in the association,

which had close to 100 members, each paying an annual fee to purchase marijuana. Last Saturday, the Guardia arrested the association’s president, a 40-year-old foreign man, as he was transporting 8kg of marijuana. This led to a search warrant being granted to Guardia officers for the plantation, where they seized 924 plants, 113gms of hashish pollen and 24.5kg of marijuana buds. The other association directors are still under investigation.

Madrid springs leak as the heavens open FREAK storms in Madrid last Friday led to flights being diverted, the metro grinding to a halt… and even a hospital flooding! Some 24 flights were forced to land at other airports in the space of 90 minutes, because of extreme weather conditions over Madrid’s Adolfo SuárezBarajas. And the metropolitan transport company released the above photo of Line 7 on the Valdezarza line, which, literally, turned into a waterfall. Some services on Line 6 and 7, the worst affected, were restored quickly, but the outer suburban lines, serving neighbouring provinces including Ávila and Salamanca, were closed all day. The downpours led to traffic chaos, with the entrances to the A-2 motorway from the M-50 ring-road flooded and blocked, as well as the Barcelona road

near the airport. The A-4 motorway, heading south into the province of Toledo, was shut at the border town of Seseña, and tailbacks were reported all over the Greater Madrid region because of patches of flooding on the roads. Several shops and cafés in an undercover mall on the Avenida de Pío XII, including a hypermarket, were flooded, and customers had to be evacuated and kept out for more than an hour. The deluge caused roof leaks in two of Madrid’s airport terminals and at the metro stations serving them, and some cars were said to have been under water in the Fuenlabrada district. Furious medical workers have criticised the authorities’ “poor planning” for bad weather after they and patients were soaked in several of the region’s hospitals, most of which are in the city. Leaky roofs and “serious flooding” were reported at the Clínico, Ramón y Cajal, and 12

de Octubre hospitals, as well as the one in the outer Madrid town of Getafe. The worst-hit hospital was La Paz, where several centimetres of water flooded the floors of wards and consultation rooms. A staff member tweeted: “Not gone away on holiday yet? Our swimming pool season has just kicked off! Come and take a dip, but hurry - space is limited! (A&E, La Paz Hospital).” Orange and Yellow weather warnings for storms, heavy rain, thunder and lightning were issued for all eastcoast provinces, from the French border to Alicante inclusive, as well as parts of Galicia and Extremadura, the whole of the regions of Asturias, Cantabria, La Rioja and the Basque Country, and all of Aragón, except the Pyrénéen province of Huesca. Yet temperatures remained high, and the humidity was palpable, with the mercury soaring to 39ºC even as the heavens opened.

Thunder-thighs gave game away A BOLIVIAN woman was caught smuggling Class A drugs into Spain after a Customs’ officer became suspicious about the shape of her thighs.

The 39-year-old was stopped shortly after stepping off a flight from Sao Paolo, Brazil, at Barcelona’s El Prat airport. After frisking her,

stunned officials found two kilos of cocaine strapped to her legs with insulating tape.

The Pamplona, Navarra, resident was remanded in custody ahead of a court appearance.

We’ve also got talent!

RESEARCHERS for top ITV show Britain’s Got Talent are heading to Spain in a search for new stars. The UK’s most popular TV talent contest was created by the legendary Simon Cowell. And Mandy O’Hagan, who, for eight years, has owned entertainment agency Stars in Bars, in Torrevieja, where she lives, has been asked by Thames TV/BGT to put together a showcase for interested applicants. “One of the assistant producers of Thames TV/ BGT contacted me after doing a Google search for agencies in Spain,” said Mandy, whose husband used to be on the Tenerife circuit. “I was top of the list, and in the area they wanted to come to, because they are

also doing something in Benidorm after my show, later the same day.” She added: “They have always stayed in the UK, but they decided to venture to this part of Spain because they know a lot of expats live here. They have asked me to put together a showcase on 22nd July. “They are sending over two talent scouts from the show, and they will also film it to take back with them. And if they like the look of any acts, they will go to BGT’s London shows later in the year. “The programme is seeking magicians, singers, dancers, circus acts, comedians, and more, and there is no age restriction.” Interested parties should contact Mandy by email on mandyohagan@hotmail. com, or via Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/mandy. ohagan.

Guardia nabs Jihadi fighter A JIHADI terrorist was arrested by the Guardia Civil last week in the mountain village of Benahavis, near Marbella. Ahmed Samsam, who had been in the Costa del Sol area for a fortnight, had been attempting to get hold of weapons and bulletproof vests in Spain, via the internet. The 29-year-old, remanded in custody by a Madrid Court, was understood to have been planning an attack, in conjunction with terrorist group ISIS. But officers are still trying to discover whether he had been involved in any plots on the Costa del Sol, despite counter-terrorism units trailing him closely since his arrival. The “dangerous” Danish national had left his country recently to fight for ISIS in Syria, and his case is now subject to a secrecy order. The Guardia’s investigations led officers to the Benahavis hotel, but Sam-

sam’s plans in Spain are still unclear. Investigators say he was trained by ISIS in Syria, according to his activity on social media, and that he

had engaged in recruitment and spreading propaganda. But they are digging deeper to determine whether he was part of a wider network in Spain.

Has Julio Iglesias got a secret child?

Javier, now 40, was raised in a working-class district of Valencia by his mother, a Portuguese dancer, claims Javier’s lawyer, Fernando Osuna, who held a press conference last Thursday. Osuna says he has genetic evidence to prove his client’s claim. A Spanish detective, who travelled to Miami, is said to have obtained a DNA sample from an unnamed direct male relative of the popular Spanish singer. The sample was checked against Javier’s own genetic profile and there was a 99.9% match. Osuna said his client was “happy, nervous and anxious”. But Osuna is anticipating a long battle against the Iglesias legal team. “They will try everything,” he said. “They’ll say that Spanish courts have no power over the matter; that only those in the United States or Dominican Republic do. “They will contest the evidence. They’ll say that the detective who collected it later manipulated it. They’ll say that the chain of custody was not legal.” But he admitted: “I would do those things if Iglesias were my client.” According to the legal claim, soon to be filed, Javier was born in 1976 during the

Speedy cyclist risks life

A DARE-DEVIL cyclist, wearing sandals and without a helmet, has been captured on video, grabbing the back of a van travelling at more than 60mph on a motorway in Mallorca.

JULIO Iglesias, one of the best-selling crooners ever, with more than 300 million albums sold worldwide, has a secret son, Javier Sánchez Santos, according to the boy’s lawyer, Fernando Osuna.

A passing taxi’s passenger filmed the incident last weekend on a mobile phone as the rider hurtled along the Ma-19 motorway near Palma, the island’s capital. He was clinging to the van with his left hand and holding on to his handlebars with the right, while passing within a few feet of cars travelling at high speed. A police source said: “This behaviour is idiotic. He’s wearing no helmet, no other protection and sandals. “He was risking his own life, but could easily have caused an accident relationship between María Edite Santos and Iglesias, who was married at the time to well-known socialite Isabel Preysler. But the news is not a complete shock. In 1992, María appeared before the media to talk about her affair with the famous singer. Standing next to her was her son, then 15, who bore a remarkable resemblance to Iglesias. A Valencia court ruled in their favour, but the decision was challenged by the Iglesias legal team, and the appeal was upheld. Yet the singer never agreed to a DNA test. As a youngster, Javier appeared on several TV shows, and in gossip magazines, saying he felt “hurt” by his alleged father’s attitude. He attempted to forge a career in the music industry during the years when his alleged brother, Enrique Iglesias, was beginning to emerge as a successful

singer in his own right. But once the novelty of his claim wore off, Javier’s own career flopped. He had recorded a few albums, to no avail, and he dropped off the media radar. His lawyer said Javier would make a media appearance next week. If his claim is successful this time, he will become the ninth official child of Julio Iglesias. The singer has three children with Isabel Preysler - Chabeli, Julio and Enrique - and five more with his current wife, Miranda Rijnsburger: Miguel, Rodrigo, Victoria, Guillermo and Cristina. The key to the new case is the evidence obtained in Miami, and whether the courts will consider it acceptable. Osuna says that the sample of organic tissue was taken from a public space and that the procedure was duly recorded. And the lawyer said that if Iglesias refused a DNA test again, it could be construed as evidence against him.

risking the lives of others as well.” Police are trying to identify the cyclist, who could face a fine of up to 500 euros. A cyclist was filmed in Barcelona last year, holding on to a bus travelling at 50mph. And in February, commuters in Santiago de Compostela, in Spain’s north-west region of Galicia, came close to knocking over a drunken cyclist, who had no lights and was taking a short-cut through a busy tunnel. The astonishing footage, filmed by a motorist tracking him in the resulting tail-back, showed him zig-zagging from one carriageway to the other as he chatted away on a mobile phone, seemingly oblivious to the loud car horns sounding behind him. Two cars in the outside lane narrowly missed him as he gathered speed on a downhill stretch of the tunnel, where the speed limit was 30 kph.

Port workers grabbed with 150kg of cocaine

TWO men, caught taking more than 150kg of cocaine from a container in Las Palmas Port, were arrested without bail. The lorry driver and a port employee, attempting to leave the port with the drugs last Thursday, were held by the National Police Organised Crime and Drug unit from Tenerife and Las Palmas, in collaboration with the Guardia Civil and

Customs. The lorry in which the suspects were travelling in, had previously been driven there, fully loaded. But the men took advantage of the time it took workers to unload it by seeking out a container, which had arrived from South America. The duo then removed several packages of cocaine, hidden in sports bags, but to no avail.

A specialist court, designed for abusive-clause concerns By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

SPAIN’S General Council of Judicial Power has approved the use of one provincial Court, specifically for claims related to the general conditions included in mortgages, whose borrower is a member of the public and not a company. It means that these courts can hear any related discrepancy to a mortgage, including controversies raised by floor clauses, early-deadline charges, delayed moratorium interests, expenses of formalisation of mortgages, and charges for multicurrency mortgages. Here in Tenerife, this specific court has been sited in La Laguna’s Civil Court 1. But the professionals’

law associations, the Judiciary, and lawyers of the Administration of Justice (Secretaries of Court), have been quick to criticise this action. They say it is only four months since Royal DecreeLaw 1/2017 was put into action for these claims, and that it will put extra pressure on the courts because they will have to handle other “ordinary” cases as well. Royal Decree-Law 1/2017 In a previous Canarian Weekly issue, I wrote about this Royal Decree, approved on 20th January, regulating the proceedings to refund monies through irregular charges, because of the floor clause (Clausulas Suelo). Bear in mind that neither the Supreme Court judgement of 2013, nor the European Court judgement of December 2016, nullified all the floor clauses, which would be nullified if they were not transparent and clear. The Supreme Court ruled that the floor clauses could be considered valid when they fulfilled all the “special transparency requirements of the contracts, signed with customers and consumers”.

What do the judges mean by “special transparency requirements?” Basically, the customers should have been informed, clearly and precisely, about the consequences of the floor clauses prior to signing for their mortgage, especially because of their complexity. The banks are obliged to reply in favour, for or against the petition. But they must explain why, if the reply is negative, and must calculate the liquidation and make an offer to the client, if positive. It is then the clients’ decision whether or not they accept it.

Experience after three months Initially, everyone believed the banks would want to avoid legal proceedings, and would offer their clients a reasonable settlement or solution. But this has not been the case. Making a “home survey” after three months, only a few banks have replied in a positive way to claims. In most cases, the banks, especially La Caixa, have responded by ignoring the clients’ petitions, writing in a standard letter that, after studying the case, they do consider the floor clause is transparent and

valid; hence, they won’t be acknowledging any claim. I suggest that all these unsatisfied clients should go to Court to claim a refund of the irregular interestcharges, because the banks have not explained clearly to their clients about the consequences of the abusive clauses. It looks as though the Civil Court 1 in La Laguna is going to be a very busy place! Mariano Zunino Siri is a registered lawyer at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Income tax to go down next year! C R I S T Ó B A L Montoro, Spain’s Economy Minister, will lower income tax next year in exchange for the opposition agreeing to his cap on public spending. Montoro (pictured left, next to Vice-President Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría) wanted to raise the limit on what the country’s 17 regional governments could spend by around 1%, to just under 120bn euros. But the minority-led right-wing PP cabinet was accused of being ungenerous by the opposition, which is, mostly left-wing. Centre-right Ciudadanos, however, agreed to vote in favour, giving the new spending cap a majority support enough for it to go through, as long as Montoro does reduce income tax for 2018. He had not planned to do this until 2019, when the next general

elections come around. Just three weeks ago, Montoro had argued that there was “no margin” to allow for cutting taxes and alleviating the financial burden on the working and middle-classes. But in an about-turn, Montoro bent under pressure and, next year, the population of Spain will save themselves a total of around 2bn euros. As yet, the specifics

have not been agreed. Ciudadanos says the tax cuts will benefit “those on the lowest incomes”. But, at the same time, it has referred directly to “the middle classes”: those not living in extreme, belowthe-breadline conditions, but who still have to watch every cent, and have little or nothing left after paying all their monthly bills. Some of the new tax régime could involve increasing tax

deductions for maternity and disability, which now sit at just 100 euros monthly, and upping the minimum threshold or “personal allowance” of 12,000 euros a year, below which individuals are not subject to tax. “The tax reductions will be applied to those social groups who most need to feel the effects of Spain’s economic recovery,” said Montoro, insisting that any

general tax cuts would still be held off until election year to show the PP in a good light. But even with the Ciudadanos’ vote in favour, however, the new spending cap cannot go through without another handful of votes: the PP has 137 MPs, Ciudadanos 32, adding up to 169. But, for a majority, a total of 176 is needed out of the 350 seats in Parliament. The PSOE (socialists), led again by Pedro Sánchez, have already said they will vote against the cap because it is not enough. In some regions, such as Andalucía, the spending increase allowed is only around 0.4%, while attempts to “sweeten” Cantabria and Catalunya have led to their being granted an additional annual margin of 1.1bn euros each. This means that minority regional parties, in the Basque Country and the Canary Islands, will be needed to provide the remaining seven votes for the spending limit to be approved.

Can they solve the mystery word and crack open the letterbox?

Nadiya Hussain embarks on a culinary road trip around Britain, meeting food producers and pioneers and creating delicious new recipes using their produce. In this first episode, her adventure begins close to where she lives, in the Home Counties. Nadiya starts with one of the first things she learnt to make as a child - cheese scones - which she serves with chive butter. Setting off on her tour of the Home Counties, she visits an asparagus farm on the outskirts of Oxford to help with the harvest, joining young farmer Imogen and learning about how the sandy soil is perfect for asparagus. Nadiya receives a crash course in harvesting using specially designed asparagus buggies, and challenges Imogen to a buggy race before preparing a welcome thank-you meal for the farming family and the pickers, using the asparagus in a fresh Indian five-spice stir fry. Her next stop is in Milton Keynes where she meets Turan, a former fireman who now runs a cooking school dedicated to teaching people how to smoke their own food. He shows Nadiya how to build her own cold smoker and smoke some haddock in it, before she then cooks her delicious smoked haddock welsh rarebit, served with a chicory and radish salad. Her final Home Counties recipe is an Eton Mess cheesecake that marries the famous dessert created at Eton School with a cheesecake base. Nadiya gets creative by making the stunning dessert with candy striped mini meringues and chocolate swirled strawberries.

Imagine… Chris Ofili: The Caged Bird’s Song Saturday 15th July, BBC2, 21.00

Alan Yentob follows the celebrated Turner Prize winning artist Chris Ofili as he creates a spectacular contemporary tapestry over seven metres wide and three metres high. Working with a team of master weavers, Ofili creates a tapestry that draws together the sights and sounds of tropical Trinidad, where he lives, with nods to both the classical world and - unexpectedly the Italian footballer Mario Balotelli. Nearly three years in the making, the final piece - The Caged Bird’s Song - is a triumph of craft and dedication, transforming Ofili’s free-flowing watercolour paintings into vibrant wool on a giant scale. Revealing the fascinating processes behind producing a hand-woven tapestry, this film also explores Ofili’s passion for his adopted island home. Since moving to Trinidad over a decade ago Ofili has experienced a creative rebirth, inspired by the natural beauty and raw power of the island, its unique colours, culture and mythology. Capturing the unique energy and atmosphere of Trinidad, while following the making of the tapestry in Edinburgh, imagine… reveals the finished piece on display at a new Ofili exhibition called Weaving Magic, currently on at the National Gallery in London.

Addicted Parents: Last Chance to Keep My Children Tuesday 18th July, BBC2, 21.00 In a large house in Sheffield, 12 families live together. But Phoenix Futures’ Specialist Family Service is no

ordinary house. And these are no ordinary families. This is the only family rehab in the UK, a place where parents addicted to drugs or alcohol come with their children to change their lives and determine their futures. They have six months to get clean, and prove that they can parent their children. It is their last chance to keep them. Filmed over a year, with unprecedented access to staff and residents, this two-part series follows several families from the beginning to the end of their treatment. They arrive as a family unit; whether they leave as one is up to them. This first film tells the story of four mothers who have spent years addicted to drugs - and have reached the end of the line. It’s time to try and become sober parents to their young children, or face losing them for good. As we follow them through detox and recovery at this unique place, we discover what it takes for them to change. As they learn to live without drugs, they have to come to terms with the past: what has brought them here and what impact their addiction has had on their families and their children.

The Sweet Makers: A Tudor Treat Wednesday 19 July, BBC2, 20.00

Four modern confectioners step back in time to discover what life was like for their Tudor predecessors. They’ll explore how our national sweet tooth developed, and how the tables of the aristocracy boasted fantastic displays of sugar craft which showed off their owners’ wealth and status. The Sweet Makers will also explore the negative side of the introduction of sugar to the Tudor lifestyle, including the impact on teeth and fueling our involvement in the most shameful chapters in British history - the Slave trade. Guided by food historian Dr Annie Gray and social historian Emma Dabiri, our modern professionals enter the world of the 16th century confectioner - a time when sugar was believed to have medicinal qualities and was so valuable it was kept under lock and key, the preserve of the elite. Every dish the team makes will form part of an elaborate aristocratic sugar banquet. Our confectioners (pictured L-R) are: chocolatier Diana Short, sweet consultant Andy Baxendale, chocolatier Paul A Young and wedding cake designer Cynthia Stroud. They are spending four days using original recipes, ingredients and equipment to create dishes that haven’t been made, let alone tasted, for hundreds of years. Their final lavish sugar banquet includes candied roses (believed to cure gonorrhea), a sweet candied root that was considered to be a Tudor aphrodisiac; sugar plates and goblets, gorgeously decorated marzipan and a spectacular model banqueting house made entirely of sugar.

The show kicks off with the Blind Auditions, with each coach needing to fill a team of 12 singers. The youngsters perform to a live band headed by music director David Tench – but can they persuade the coaches to hit their buttons? After each performance, all the coaches’ chairs turn so they can give feedback and encouragement, even if they didn’t press their buttons. The Battles see three acts sing off for one place in the semi-final, although there are no steals on The Voice Kids – and no second chances for the coaches. The final four acts in each team then sing in the semi-final for a spot in the spectacular live finale – with viewers choosing the winner.

Joanna Lumley’s India

Wednesday 19th July, ITV1, 21.00

In episode three, Joanna’s adventures across India conclude as she explores Rajasthan, Delhi and the mountainous North West ending in Kashmir, the place of her birth. Rajasthan, on the Pakistan border is famous for its beautiful desert, opulent palaces and stunning lakes. It’s also home to one of the most famous tiger reserves in India. Joanna arrives at Ranthambhore National Park to meet Belinda Wright from the Wildlife Protection Society of India, to go on safari and learn about their tiger conservation programmes. Belinda, like Joanna, is a daughter of the Raj. She has spent her life campaigning against poaching, animal trafficking and the loss of wild places. Sadly, many poor people still see poaching as a means of survival. Joanna visits a unique grassroots project at a school attended by the children of the Moghya people, a local tribe of skilful hunters and trackers who are now blamed for much of the poaching around the park. The children are being given an education in the hope that they don’t grow up to become tiger poachers.

Braided fashion-fix By Carl pattison from Robot

“QUICK hairfix in a rush?” Then dig out a tail-comb and get plaiting! Plaits have never really gone out of fashion; they just fade away and then come right back at you. They can take you from elegant to Boho Chic, and night-onthe-town to summer festival; there’s not just one, single way to wear them. You can start by

adding a simple one to one side of your head, to pull back and tuck underneath a mass of loose curls. Plait away the front of your hair to one side, and hide the end underneath smooth or straightened hair, for another amazing

look. It just depends how creative you want to be. Check out multiple videos on YouTube to inspire you. This is a great way to learn variations and be talked through, step by step, different ways to create original, home ideas. If it’s something more intricate, leave it up to your stylist to give you a plaited transformation that will last for days. Once you’re through with your look, loosen the plait and drag your fingers through to create soft, beach waves; two styles for the price of one … get practising!

Stand up for your shopping rights! By Carl Pattison HOW difficult is it to find the right outfit? Can’t find the right colour, it’s not your style or it just doesn’t look right when you get it on? Well, imagine not being a so-called, “regular” size. People are built in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but, so far, clothes for curvy girls just aren’t what the stores want to sell us. The majority of retailers still insist on perceiving the regular woman as being a size eight or 10, when, realistically, she is a size 16. So, imagine for a minute

that you are a largerthan-average size, and how it must feel not to be catered for. Millions of plussize ladies have the resources to spend

on clothes, yet the stores don’t seem to want their money. Yes, I know there are the odd retail chains that have a larger range, but this can be as little as 5% of what they are holding as stock. I’ve seen the collections that they have; some are OK, but most look well “frumpy”. No matter what size women are, they still want to look good, yet they are being left behind. It’s time we made a stand in the stores, and proudly ask for bigger sizes when we shop. Then, maybe, fashion retailers might start to listen.

By Emma

from Motorworld

IN 2015, the DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) set out the criteria that had to be met when a foreigner would be obligated to replace their foreign driving licence with a Spanish one.

Over the last two years, there have been countless publications and “advice” given by all sorts of people as to why you DID NOT have to exchange your licence. The DGT, kindly, gave a period of amnesty because of the very high numbers of foreigner drivers in Spain, to ensure that the country and its residents fell in line with the rules and laws set out by the European Union. The EU is responsible for making sure that these rules, which became law in 2015, were adhered to throughout its member states. This was permitted, but expired in January 2016. There are two, main scenarios where action by the licence holder is required BY LAW. Firstly, if your licence has an indefinite expiry date, (those holders from Belguim

and Germany for example), or if it is still valid for more than 15 years and you were LEGALLY resident in Spain before 19th January 2013, you should already have renewed/ exchanged your original licence for a Spanish one. If you fall into this catagory, we strongly advise that you do this now, as the DGT are enforcing the law and issuing fines upwards of 200 euros to drivers, when caught. If you became LEGALLY resident after the after 19th January 2013, you have a two-year period from the date of your residency in which to renew. If you have been resident since 2013, that period will have expired. The second situation is if your driving licence has expired, or is due to expire, it MUST be renewed in YOUR COUNTRY OF RESIDENCE. You should note that your Residency status is not a matter of choice, but physical presence i.e. where you reside. If you hold a Green Residency Certificate, and your licence has expired or is about to, you HAVE to renew in Spain. Many people “use” an address in their country of birth to renew a licence, but this is ILLEGAL because you are no longer resident in that country, so cannot renew there. Many people, including some “experts” here in

Tenerife, were, and still are, providing advice that is incorrect, stating that, as we are in Europe, you do not have to exchange your licence. They are also suggesting that the DGT would not fine people; again, this is incorrect. The process may seem daunting and complex, but, if you use a professional person or company who deal with these types of issues on a daily basis, then the whole process, from start to finish, can be very smooth and uncomplicated. There are, of course, costs involved, but would you expect anything else in Spain? These are not expensive. There is the added advantage that the Spanish licence displays not only your photo, name and date of birth, but also your NIE number. Your address is stored in the DGT central system, and, because of Data Protecion laws, it isn’t displayed on the licence. In the event of an accident or incident where the police are involved, you normally only have to produce your Spanish licence and insurance documents, because the licence holds all the necessary information needed by the police to write a report. While you may all be thinking of a summer holiday, think first about whether you are driving legally! Motorworld offer a service for exchange of licences; please contact us for further details.

Turmeric health warning!

Walls can be a feature...

By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic

A FEATURE wall can be any-where in the home; bathroom, bedroom, living room or kitchen. It can completely transform your space without you having to make drastic changes, or breaking the bank! There are endless ways to create a good, feature wall. The obvious ones that come to everyone’s minds are wallpapering, or

painting one wall a different colour from the rest. But there are so many more options and even-simpler ways that can work better, and look more effective. For example, in the living area, wall-towall floating shelves with a few selected pieces placed on top, or a cluster of frames with different artwork, can look really eyecatching and give the whole space a real designer look. In the bathroom, using a more-decorative tile on one wall and plain on the rest is a brilliant way to have a feature, especially in the apartments here where bathrooms can be on the small side, and are commonly wet-

rooms/shower rooms. The question is where to start! It can be hard knowing what to do with so many options available. It’s also a bit nervewracking, trying to picture something in your head before actually doing it, and wondering whether it will look right. Don’t do it alone; get people’s opinions, and take your time. Here at Muebles Chic we are always happy to help, and have plenty of artwork etc. to inspire you. E-mail some pictures of your home to our inhouse, interior-design team at muebles. chic25@gmail.com. We can give free quotations on any decorating and fitting you may need.

The spice can aid in regulating the amount of bile the gallbladder produces, or it can obstruct the bile duct and cause the formation of gallstones. However, the latter effect is only going to happen if your gallbladder is not in a good condition. If you suffer from liver problems Some studies showed that intake of turmeric has an effect on how the organ processes some drugs, and may lead to liver problems. In relation to that, experts now stress for people with a liver condition to practise caution when taking turmeric supplements. Making use of turmeric’s medicinal properties is safe, as long as it is consumed in the recommended dosage. The cases mentioned are just some of the examples of which you may become at risk, if you do not follow the basic guidelines. If you have a preexisting condition, the only way to know the safe dosage, and find out more about when to avoid turmeric, is through consulting your doctor first.

Nightshades can be a pain MOST of us eat foods from the nightshade family, and, while they are very popular, they can cause problems in a lot of people. So what are these fruits and vegetables, and why you should avoid them? What are nightshades? This group of foods includes tomatoes, eggplants (aubergines), potatoes and all kinds of peppers. They belong to the solanaceae family of plants which are known to cause inflammation because they contain a poisonous compound called solanine. Blueberries, goji berries and Indian Ginseng (ashwaganda) don’t actually belong to this group, but have alkaloids that can also cause inflammation.

According to scientists, solanine could be causing irritation in the gastrointestinal tract. When this substance moves into the blood, it is capable of destroying our red blood cells that carry oxygen, and it is difficult for our body to eliminate it. It doesn’t dissolve in water, it cannot be broken down or destroyed during cooking, and it doesn't break down, even in our body. Solanine needs to be converted into alphasolanine in our body before it can be excreted. This compound is a neurotoxin, and is poisonous to nerve tissue. Nightshades and arthritis Arthritis has been found to be caused and aggravated by nightshades. If you are suffering from any type of arthritis, nightshades can further worsen it. There may be case of misdiagnosis of the disease in some cases where similar effects are caused by

consuming nightshades. So your arthritis may actually not be arthritis after all! It may be as a result of eating some nightshade foods. Scientists now recommend that everyone having the following conditions should not consume nightshades: · Rheumatoid arthritis · Osteoarthritis · Other joint disorders Dr. Norman F. Childers, who founded the Arthritis Nightshades Research Foundation, says that a diet containing nightshades seems to play a role in the incidence of arthritis. This has been studied in a 20year survey that covered more than 1,400 people.

Plants belonging to the nightshades or solanaceae family are critical in causing arthritis in those who are sensitive. People who have been suffering from arthritis, or various related conditions, should avoid these Solanaceae-family plants at all costs. The other problems include rheumatism, lupus and other disorders of the musculoskeletal system. Nightshades could be adversely affecting your health in many ways. So what are these nightshade foods that must be avoided? Tomatoes - all kinds Potatoes - all kinds (this

does not include yams and sweet potatoes) Okra Eggplant (or aubergine) Peppers (all kinds including wax pepper, green pepper, bell pepper, red pepper, paprika, cayenne, and chili pepper among others) Goji berries Artichokes Blueberries (they have the inflammation-causing alkaloids) Gooseberries Paprika Homeopathic Belladonna Condiments such as pepper corns, black pepper and white pepper don’t fall into the nightshade category.

Scorching fear for Spain’s olive trees A LETHAL bacteria affecting olive trees, the Xylella fastidiosa pathogen, which dries out trees until they appear scorched, has arrived on mainland Spain.

To the dread of olive producers involved in this huge industry (Spain produces around half the world’s olive oil), it has been discovered in almond trees near the town of Guadalest, in the eastern region of Valencia. All trees and plants within a 100-metre radius are now being destroyed.

And the area is also being treated against insects, suspected of transmitting the bacteria. The bacteria, which emerged in southern Italy in 2013, was found in October on a cherry tree

in the Balearics. Local authorities, which banned exports of plants from the islands to prevent the bacteria, dubbed the “olive tree leprosy”, in a bid to stop it spreading to the mainland.

More heartless cruelty!

14th July - 20th July 2017

Fabulous start for the Exclusive singles’ club

LAST Wednesday saw the launch of Tenerife’s only private-members’ club for singles, at Venture restaurant’s Bianco, at the Safari Centre, and what a night they had. THIS last week has, again, been busy with dogs being brought to the refuge by Protection Civil, including these two podencos. They were found, tied up and abandoned in Granadilla, both in very bad condition, and obviously of no use to their owners. We find it completely unbelievable that people can be so callous and heartless to animals, when all they do is love their owners, unconditionally. Assistance required Please contact us if you

can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol.

The party, starting with a cava reception on the terrace, moved inside, and everyone enjoyed a threecourse dinner with wine, then danced the night away at the Magic Bar. One of the club’s founders, Denise Bell, said: “We were thrilled to host our inauguration dinner, and to welcome people who, we hope, will become initial members of our singles’ club. “We have so much planned… lunches, dinners, and magical days and nights out on this wonderful island.” Jane Dean added: “It’s so exciting, although we stress that we are not a dating site, but a club which wants to create friendships and open doors

to a more fulfilling social life. If love blossoms along the way, that’s a bonus!” Sue Havenhand, based on the Golf del Sur, is equally enthusiastic. “This concept is hugely popular in the UK,” she said. “I am surprised no one else has thought of doing it here in Tenerife. I’m totally looking forward to it.” The next event is a tapas afternoon at Meson de la Finca, Chayofa, on Sunday, 30th July. The

club welcomes people who want to see what it’s all about, on a no-obligation basis. There’s wine-tasting and star-gazing coming up, so stay informed on our social-media channels. For more information, call Denise on 646 985 694, check out the website www.exclusive singlesclubtenerife.com or find the club on Facebook: Exclusive Singles Club Tenerife.

In memory of Wayne A MEMORIAL service for Wayne Ayotte will be held at 1pm on Saturday, 22nd July 2017 at the Cultural Centre in Los Cristianos. The duration of the service will be approximately one hour, and the location, already arranged, will accommodate up to 100 people. Wayne was well known to many across the Canary Islands, both through Freemasonry, which became a large part of his life, and for the assistance he gave to others when they required a translator. He took this further, often caring for the welfare needs of the people

he was assisting, especially if it were for a hospital or doctor’s visit. To confirm your attendance, please visit Canarian Weekly Facebook, where there is a link on this post straight to an e-mail form so you can let us know. This will give a more accurate estimate of the number of people wishing to attend, and, if it is in excess of the capacity of the location, the organisers will endeavour to arrange a larger venue, to allow everyone to have access. There will be a gathering for drinks after the memorial service at a local hostelry.

Cats Welfare News

40,000 reasons to spay ONE female cat can produce an average of 12 kittens a year, and, if those kittens (and so on) are not spayed/ castrated, in only six years there will be a staggering 40,000 extra cats! Letting your cat have kittens may seem like a fun thing to do. Some even believe it's healthier for the cat. Neither is true. Having a litter of kittens in no way alters the maturity level of the cat, either physically or mentally. In most cases, it’s hard to find good homes for all the kittens, even if they are advertised as being “Free to a Good Home”. A difficult labour, kitten mortality, and potential health problems in the mother can take all the fun out of the experience. Most people end up wishing they had never allowed their female to have a litter. In addition, mammary cancer is the third-mostcommon cancer in cats, and, undetected, this condition is almost always fatal. Cats who have been spayed have a 40-60% lower risk. Also, unspayed cats can develop severe uterine diseases. There are many reasons to spay your female cat. Not only does it eliminate many medical and behavioural problems, it probably adds years to their lives, or, at least, provides them with more-comfortable, less-stressful existences. Cats Welfare can secure inexpensive spaying for your cat; please contact us for details. Cat of the week: Lily-Anna Everybody “oohs and aahs” when they see a tiny kitten; rightly so, but adult cats deserve attention, too, especially when they are as lovable and friendly as LilyAnna. Not only is she a beautiful cat to look at, she is

Guaidyl Children’s Charity

Flipping marvellous!

THE underprivileged children of Granadilla’s Guaidyl Day Centre enjoyed a boat trip to see the whales and dolphins on Monday, courtesy of Peter Grundahl and

his Royal Delfin crew. Children’s charity Amigos de Gillian Banks says a massive “thank-you” to them, especially as the kids really did have a whale of a time … and so did the Guaidyl staff,

and a few of the parents who joined them! They saw lots of whales, and the dolphins entertained the group with their flips. The children also enjoyed a picnic, provided by the Day Centre.

SHAGGY is only a year old, and really needs his own home. As a young pup, he was thrown into the sea at Los Abrigos, and, luckily, pulled from the water. We have had him ever since. He is a great dog with loads of energy, so be ready! Can you give Shaggy a home? Please call Elaine on 678 015653 for more information, and to arrange a meeting or no-obligation trial. K9 Animal News “Hi. Linda here. I’m five years old, and arrived at K9 earlier this year as, through no fault of my own, my family were no longer able to have a dog. “Though I say so myself, I’m a favourite with my people at the refuge. I think it is because I am such a friendly, good-natured girl and love life so much. I am a people-dog, and just love to be around them, but I get on well with most other dogs, too. “I share a room at K9 with

Janie Jai, Debbie Diamond and Steiner Bailey. We raised much-needed funds for Vera the podenco, and our other special-needs pooches. Thank you once again. Upcoming summer events On Thursday, 27th July we are holding a summer dinnerdance at The Waterfall, Golf del Sur. Come and enjoy a fantastic meal and entertainment by Jon Paul and Hayley Butler. Call Sue on 629 388102 for your tickets, which are strictly limited,

and priced at 25 euros. On Sunday, 6th August we have not one, but two, events for you. In the afternoon, we will be at Destiny´s Bar, near Starco Las Americas, for a summer fundraiser, packed with the island’s finest entertainers. Line up to follow. In the evening, we will have a night-time, sponsored dog walk - Bark at the Moon setting off from San Blas seafront path towards Amarilla Golf and back; a total of 8km by moonlight. Call Eugenio on 633 717480 for more information. On Sunday, 13th August we are back at Clouseau’s, Palm Mar, for our regular fundraiser. Again, the best of entertainment for you, as well as a tombola and raffle. See you there, folks.

Meet Linda my best buddy, Tiny. We love our walks, running around and sniffing. I am told I am very intelligent and quick to learn new things. All I know is I specially like to learn when there are treats involved! “Our room at the refuge is in a prime spot, so we can say Hi to all our chums when they come to the yard for dinner. It’s cool, but what I really want to have again is my own loving family, and to be in a warm-and-secure home where I can relax and chill sometimes, as well as have fun. “Do you have a place in your home and heart for me?

People say that we rescue dogs are especially grateful to have our second chance, and I know that would sure be me. If you would like to meet me, please get in touch with my people at K9.”

Marlins’ big home-run

Seeds get the pip! IT wouldn’t be Wimbledon without some shocks, and, after a fairly smooth first week, no one is safe as the big finals loom.

EVERY sport under the sun … that’s Tenerife’s proud claim. And, last weekend, the island’s baseball team, Puerto de la Cruz Marlins, continued their dominance of Spain’s Division of Honour. They clinched their ninth league title on their home diamond at

Burgado, in Buenavista del Norte, by racking up a 4-0 victory over San Inazo, of Bilbao. The Marlins also have a strong youth development section, with links to US club Atlanta Braves, and several local youngsters have gone out to Atlanta training

camps. A decade ago, Tenerife had two senior teams, the other being Candelaria Rojas (reds) providing a local derby. Now, though, visiting teams from the mainland play back-toback games to reduce the cost of making the long trip down to the Canary Islands.

Running

Minimal Running, maximum benefit!

LACE up your running shoes and make a date for the Dialprix Minimal Running 8km challenge in Poris de Abona, on Saturday, 29th July. The setting couldn’t be nicer: a rugged, coastal stretch just before the halfway point to Santa Cruz from the South, and benefits

for two good causes. Minimal Running is the modern trend of running in bare feet,, or thin-soled shoes, rather than hi-tech footwear. But in this case, your basic trainers should do the job nicely. Proceeds from this year’s race will go to help those affected by multiple sclerosis in Tenerife. The added charity bonus, with the 10euro fee, is a donation of at least 1kg of non-

perishable food, to be handed to the Poris de Abona food bank for local, needy families. Up to 25th July, you can enter at any Dialprix supermarket for the big event, which sets off at 9am on 29th July. Women and men will run separately, in agecategories of 16-24, 2540 and 41-50, as well as 50-plus. Full entry details can be found on w w w. m u s i . c o m . e s / minimalrunning

Rafa Nadal looked to be cruising before hitting an iceberg in Gilles Muller, and Andy Murray was leading the Brit charge with a bit of a swagger, before bowing out to Sam Querrey. Nadal’s defeat may have signalled the end of his glory years at Wimbledon. Muller, the hard-working, determined 34-year-old from Luxembourg ground him down 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and, finally, won an epic 13-15 final set. Rafa has built his popularity over the years with skill and style, and he maintained that class right up his departure. Congratulating his opponent, and even sharing a joke with him, endeared Rafa to the crowd, and

he was as refreshing as strawberries and Pimms. Murray will point to a niggling hip injury that came back to haunt him in his 3-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1 quarter-final defeat by 24th seed American Querrey. At 30, Murray has plenty of good years left, but former champion Boris Becker, now a media commentator, warned that he should ease off a little on his schedule, and allow his body more time to recover from the constant pounding. Murray was still mentally agile at the postdefeat press conference when he picked up a journalist, who mentioned Querrey was the first American

since 2009 to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals. There has, of course, been plenty of female success since then for the American stars. Novak Djokovic was another favoured player to fall foul to injury. The former world No.1 has an awkward elbow injury, and, despite giving it a go, he had to retire from his quarterfinal against Tomas Berdych. Djokovic was a set and two games behind when he pulled the plug, admitting later that he knew the injury could be a problem, and that he just had to give into it at the end. For mere mortals, it’s a sobering thought that Djokovic was seen to be struggling because he couldn’t serve above 114mph. There are quite a few good club players, let alone those who play for fun, who would give their right arm elbow and all - to get anywhere near that speed!

B entertained Bar 180 B, and, after impressive finishes from Anne, with a 91 for the hosts, and Jackie H’s 84 for the visitors, it was left to Lynne to clinch the trebles for the away team for a share of the points in a 4-4 draw.

Basketball

Women’s World Cup in doubt for Tenerife THERE is a major salvage operation underway in Santa Cruz to prevent the city losing its allotted Women’s Basketball World Cup next year. Spain was awarded the 2018 World Cup last year, with Santa Cruz getting the nod to stage it. But the sport’s governing body, FIBA, say they are not confident that the main centre for the games, the 4,000-capacity Pabellon Quico Cabrera, is up to scratch for such a high-profile tournament. Even though the event doesn’t take place until

September 2018, FIBA want to see any upgrade work in place now. The world’s top-16 countries, including the US, would ensure massive media exposure for Tenerife in general, and Santa Cruz in particular, and city Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez has called a meeting this weekend with FIBA representatives and Spain’s FEB governing body. There is still time to save the prestigious event for Santa Cruz, but rival cities are alert to the uncertainty, including Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso has added further

fuel to the argument by Tweeting that the stadium

makeover, and all the other hosting costs, could run to 6.5 million euros. Meanwhile, Iberostar Tenerife, aiming for even greater heights, now know their first-round opponents in defence of their European Champions League, which starts in October with four, eight-team groups. Tenerife will be up against French team Elan Chalon; BK Ventspils, of Latvia; PAOK Salonica, of Greece; BC Neptunas, of Lithuania; Gaziantep, of Turkey, as well as two qualifiers, who must fight their way through a selection round. Home and away games will be on Tuesday and

Wednesday evenings, before the knockout stage starts in February. It is a long road, but it’s the same as last year, and it led to Tenerife hosting and winning the inaugural competition. New Tenerife coach Nenad Markovic, his feet firmly under the table, is sorting out the squad for his assault on Europe, and Spain’s elite Liga Endesa. Americans Davin White (pictured) and Tim Abromaitis have pledged themselves to another season, and the club are close to adding some new overseas players to spice up the squad.

CD Tenerife

CD Tenerife jigsaw is coming together

TRAINING resumes at CD Tenerife for the new season on Monday, and more new players are beginning to check in. There’s even a small, financial windfall from old enemies!

The recruiting net has been flung far and wide, and, after the capture of striker Juan Villar from Valladolid, three more new arrivals have put pen to paper. Victor Casadesus, a 32-year-old forward, last at Levante, was born in Mallorca and came up through their youth system. His best return was 14 goals while on loan at Gimnastic in 2008-2009. Tenerife coach Pep Marti spent most of his career at Mallorca, so should know all about his abilities. One player returning to Santa Cruz is Juan Carlos Real, who had half-a-season with Tenerife after arriving from his home-town club, Deportivo La Coruña. The 26-year-old attacking midfielder, who scored just once in his previous spell for CDT, has spent the last two seasons playing for Romanian league side CFR Cluj. Latest capture is

Bryan Acosta, a defensive midfielder from Honduras, on a five-year deal. The 23-year-old international joins from Real España to continue the Honduras connection. Choco Lozano has just left Tenerife after two seasons, and young prospect Darixon also came over last season, but played limited games for the reserves. There was a surprise bonus last week when Swansea City signed Roque Mesa from Las Palmas. The 28-year-old midfielder spent one season with CD Tenerife youth in 2012, and, under FIFA youthdevelopment rules, a 30,000-euro slice of his 12.5m-euro fee goes to Tenerife. There are still hopes that striker Nano will return from Eibar. The La Lagunaborn striker left Tenerife

Boxing

Spoiled for choice: It’s cage-fighting v boxing FIGHT fans in Tenerife will be spoilt for choice in the next few weeks, with a double dose of action that won’t knock a hole in their wallets. It’s Boxing Night at Adeje’s Las Torres sports hall next Friday (21st July), and on Friday, 11th August, San Isidro Terrero hosts Hombres de Honor (men of honour) cage-fighting. The Adeje bill features five professional bouts and 10 amateur fights, all for just 15 euros in advance, or 20 euros on the door, with a VIP option of 50 euros. Doors open at 6pm, with the main fight at 10pm. That top-of-the-bill clash features

IBF Intercontinental Champion Artem Haroyan against challenger Dame Seck. The other professional clashes include Cheikh Dioum (the Senegal Tiger) v Selen Agudi. The amateur boxers are provided by the Manuel Povedano school of boxing, based at the Antonio Dominguez football and athletics stadium in Playa de Las Americas. At San Isidro´s Canarian wrestling arena, there will be 12 fights in the large central cage in the mixed martial-arts format. The action starts at 8.30pm and tickets are 20 euros in advance (look out for posters in shop windows), 25 euros on the door, or you can buy them at www. tomaticket.es

last August for 3.2m euros, but has had a torrid time. Eibar are insisting they will do a cash deal only, rather than loan him out. But if he goes elsewhere, Tenerife have a 10% sell-on clause. There is also uncertainty over young Tenerife keeper Carlos Abad, who has been

on loan at Real Madrid B for two seasons. But they never took up the option to buy. Tottenham are reported

to be keen on snapping up the prospect for around 3m euros, but, otherwise, he might be loaned out again.
