32m plan to end traffic nightmare

THE Canarian Government has released its final plans for a 32-million-euro project, to put an end to the horrendous rush-hour traffic jams in Las Chafiras. But it could take years to complete, from the look of it, even though it will be built in stages. Continued on Page 3

Scheme to halt Las Chafiras traffic jams Bare-faced cheek!

IMAGES of a naked man strolling down the main street in Lanzarote’s Puerto del Carmen have gone viral throughout social media. The foreign man, in broad daylight, walked around in his birthday suit, regardless of the bars and restaurants full of families and pedestrians, who watched in horror. He is seen walking down the road shouting, singing, waving and swinging his arms around. The Guardia Civil eventually arrested him, even though he resisted, and attempted to flee on a bicycle.

Man hurt in 10m fall

AN early-morning walker, who fell 10 metres down a hole at the side of a street in Adeje at 4am on Tuesday, was treated by paramedics after the emergency services had been called. Paramedics assessed his injuries - a damaged head - and transferred him by ambulance to hospital for further treatment.

Continued from Front The seemingly-complicated road lay-outs, including three roundabouts, will do away with the main traffic bottlenecks in the South, says the Government. That’s because they cause kilometre-long jams around this section of the TF-1, going down to the two Golfs and up to San Miguel, and feature an average of 75,000 vehicles a day. The area, comprising one of the highest build-ups of traffic on the island, is a top priority for the Canarian Government. It is now working against the clock to put the project out to tender before the end of the year, to fulfil its commitment to the public. The main construction will be a huge roundabout in Las Chafiras over the TF-1, replacing the existing one and displaying three-lane

segments, which will be new to Tenerife. These fast-access lanes will allow easy entries for drivers to other areas in the municipality, without having to use the roundabout. They will also make it easier to get to the industrial estate. Some 1.3km down the motorway, heading south and either side of the dualcarriageway, two mediumsized roundabouts will be built in Oroteanda, near the current turn-off to Guargacho, and will be connected by a bridge. In addition, to end the island’s most problematic traffic area, and which has sparked repeated complaints from town halls and businessmen, there will be two service roads: one south of the TF-1 (which already exists, although it needs renovating), and another to the north, on the Llano del Camello side.

They will enable drivers to make short journeys without having to use the motorway. They will reduce traffic significantly on the motorway in the south, yet both roads will have direct access to the TF-1. San Miguel de Abona Mayor Arturo González, who has seen the final project draft, said it has incorporated a number of new developments, compared with the schedule drawn up by the previous Ministry of Public Works. González mentioned an area, parallel to the large roundabout, to cater for rainwater, waste-water, desalinated water and even telephone lines, linking Llano del Camello with Las Chafiras. The Mayor also found that the revised draft had included one of the demands most requested by the public: multiple pedestrian

crossings, currently nonexistent and a danger to pedestrians. The crossings will also be adapted for disabled people. “The budget includes several high-voltage towers being removed, at a cost of 1.5m euros, which will speed up construction work on the link roads,” added González. Once the modified project has been approved by the Canarian Government, the next step will be the technician’s inspection and approval. Then follows the environmental-impact assessment, already in progress, and, finally, an agreement with the owners of the land affected by the new roads. San Miguel Town Hall will strive for a consensus to ensure that the proposed procedures are met, and that the work can be put out to tender before the end of 2017.

Rajoy may face new trial, in Parliament! SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, having been grilled for two hours as a witness in a huge, on-going Gürtel scandal case in court last week, is under the cosh again.

This time, the Government’s left-wing parties, PSOE and Podemos, have joined forces to sign a joint petition to parliament. They demand the house be recalled from its summer break to discuss Rajoy’s role in the allegedly-fraudulent management of his Popular Party in the 1990s and early 2000s, known as the Gürtel case. Specifically, the two leftwing parties want the PM “to explain the motives for which he refused to assume political responsibility for

the corruption cases linked heavily to his Popular Party, and which led to him having to testify before the National High Court”.

The 65-member, permanent committee of the Spanish Congress, which takes decisions when parliament is in recess, must now decide

whether or not to accept the opposition request. Socialist Party PSOE has 15 members on the committee, Podemos 12, the Popular Party 25 and Ciudadanos six. The other seven seats belong to regional minority parties. A Spanish Congress spokeswoman said last Thursday that it was up to the Speaker - Rajoy loyalist Ana Pastor (PP) - to set a date for that vote, “which could be at any time until the end of the summer”. A simple majority in favour of the petition would be enough to recall parliament. Margarita Robles, PSOE spokeswoman, told a TV programme last Thursday: “Yesterday, Mr Rajoy thought he was in parliament, where he doesn’t answer questions.” She added: “If there is nothing to hide, the PP should welcome the chance

to speak.” On the Wednesday in court, Rajoy answered an investigating judge’s questions for two hours as a witness in the on-going Gürtel scandal case, claiming repeatedly that he knew nothing, saw little and had contact with almost no one named as a suspect in the trial, which is looking into offthe-books accounting and party financing when Rajoy was a minister under then Prime Minister José María Aznar. Shortly after Rajoy’s testimony ended, Pedro Sánchez, who leads the PSOE, called on him to “resign this morning before the King”. adding that it was “a black day in the history of our democracy”. Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias said: “The impertinence and insolence with which Rajoy talks to citizens is shameful.”

Cabildo: pollution’s down to the climate

TENERIFE Cabildo is adamant that the appearance of micro-algae along the coast is not associated with the current discharge problems. President Carlos Alonso said there was no link between them, telling reporters: “It is down to climatic conditions.” He added that the island’s municipalities and the Canary Islands Government “monitor and control” pollution in waters, while it is “invested” in the Cabildo to improve sanitation. In fact, the Cabildo will invest some 48 million

euros over the next three years, improving the sanitation network with a set of works that includes sceptic and sewage networks, and water treatment in urban centres. As for the presence of micro-algae, the Directorate General of Public Health of the Canary Islands Government recommends that people abstain from bathing, and avoid direct contact with material deposited in the sand. This occurs in areas where discoloured water is seen, with spots of varying intensity and colour, and loss of clearness, or the formation of oily-type foams.

May’s EU clash with Chancellor BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May is adamant that free movement of EU people into the UK will end in 2019. She has contradicted earlier suggestions by Chancellor Philip Hammond that the current rules could continue for a transitional period, when Brexit is triggered and the UK leaves the European Union.

Hammond, who said there should be no “cliff edge” for immigration after Britain’s 2019 EU departure, suggested that current immigration rules should remain in place after Brexit, which could stretch for three years. “At the present time, we have a high level of dependence on foreign workers in the UK,” he said. “Nobody wants us to go over a cliff edge in March 2019 when, suddenly, our

health services are unable to cope and social care is unable to deliver,” he said. Disagreements within the conservative party are sparking disapproval from opposing ministers. Tom Brake, Lib Dem MP for Carshalton and Wallington, said: “The government is in total disarray. Unless the cabinet can agree on a position, how can it possibly negotiate Brexit on behalf of Britain with the EU?”

Ambassador highlights holiday-bug challenges SIMON Manley, the British Ambassador to Spain, recently wrote to key stakeholders in the Spanish tourism industry, informing them of the steps taken by the UK Government to tackle fraudulent sickness claims. The issue has had a serious impact, both on hoteliers in Spain and the UK packageholiday industry. Manley said: “These claims, rightly, caused concern in Spain, and have had a serious impact on Spanish hoteliers. “But recent measures announced by the British Government show how seriously we take this issue, and our determination to clamp down on loop-holes and fraudulent claims. “Some 18 million British tourists visit Spain each year, and, while the vast majority of holiday-makers

will not make false claims, these recent measures will help clamp down on those who do. “As our travel advice says, making a false claim could result in legal proceedings in the UK or in Spain.” The Ambassador, who stressed the seriousness with which the British Government and packageholiday industry are treating false claims, set out steps which have been taken, and

the legal measures put in place, to put an end to this unethical, illegal practice. The letter laid out the recent announcement by the British Ministry of Justice to implement changes to law, which will close the loopholes that have enabled these fraudulent claims to happen. The system of fixed, recoverable costs have been extended to cover claims arising abroad, limiting the legal

Stolen-car gang right out of luck

SPAIN’S Guardia Civil, collaborating with police colleagues from Austria, France and Portugal, have smashed a gang who were transporting stolen cars from Europe to North Africa. High and medium-range vehicles were being targeted, even for the spareparts market. So far, 12 people were arrested in a special, simultaneous operation which took place in the ports of Algeciras, Alicante, Almeria, Barcelona, Malaga, Motril, Tarifa and Valencia. As a result of the Guardia Civil operation, a total of 43 vehicles (33 of them completely dismantled), which had been stolen in Italy, France, Germany and Sweden, have been recovered, and 12 people of Moroccan, Algerian, French and Dutch nationalities arrested. The arrests come as part of the regular “Operation Crossing The Straits” investigations. They are staged every year to manage the large influx of people and vehicles during the summer, coming from all over Europe to cross from Spain to North Africa. So far this year, Guardia Civil officers have recovered more than 17,600 stolen vehicles.

costs paid out and making the costs of defending a claim predictable to tour operators. The Civil Justice Council, sponsored by the British Ministry of Justice and responsible for modernising the civil justice system, is reviewing how low-value, personal-injury claims are handled, with the aim of reducing the incentive to bring claims which lack merit. The British Government has also asked the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), and other industry representatives, to present further data on the volume and costs of claims, which will help inform further action from government and industry to tackle the issue. The UK package-holiday industry, in conjunction with Spanish hoteliers, is also taking a firm stance, and tightening up its own internal processes and fraudscreening programmes. Some of these have already resulted in claims that lack merit being challenged in

a court of law, and holidaymakers being prosecuted. For example, a UK court recently dismissed a claim by a British family, who had been encouraged to submit a claim on a “no-win, no-fee” basis by an unscrupulous claims-management company. It alleged that they had fallen ill with gastroenteritis during an all-inclusive holiday to Gran Canaria in 2013. Having ruled the claim implausible, through lack of medical evidence, and because no mention of illness had been made to hotel staff or tour representatives at the time, the judge ordered the couple to pay the tour operator thousands in legal costs. The Ambassador concluded that, although the vast majority of holiday-makers will not make false claims, the British Government continues to warn travellers that those submitting false claims could face legal action in the UK - or in Spain!

Thief runs out of Thief’s parting shock cash… registers! from her ex-landlady

A BUSINESS in Los Abrigos was broken into over the weekend and its cash register, containing 35 euros in coins and notes, was stolen. The Guardia Civil identified the thieving, 22-year-old foreigner, rapidly, thanks to the security cameras in place. He was found hiding in

a nearby building under construction, together with the cash register and another one, holding 500 euros in cash. Police traced the latter back to a robbery which took place on 21st July in another Los Abrigos business. The man, together with the police report, was handed over to the Arona Courts, the stolen cash registers being returned to their owners.

Dinosaurs are banned!

AN official sign from La Laguna Town Hall warns that it is forbidden to take dinosaurs to the recreational park of Mesa Mota. It became theme of the day on social media, where the unusual warning has gone viral. And it really isn’t a joke, as you can see from the picture. Among the park rules is the rather shocking picture: not allowed to walk dinosaurs. Regarding the unusual subject of the ban, La Laguna Town Hall has no coherent explanation. It simply says “it is investigating the facts and the person responsible for this joke”.

A WOMAN was arrested in Los Gigantes by the Guardia Civil for stealing various items from a case owned by her former landlady.

The apartment owner, inspecting the property

before the 52-year-old woman and her partner moved out, was carrying 5,800 euros in cash, jewellery and a high-end mobile phone among other items in the case. When the owner opened it to return the tenants’ security deposit, it had been cleaned out! Guardia officers were

called, and took both parties back to their station to be interviewed. The 52-year-old was visibly nervous, yet she allowed a bag-search by officers, who found all the cash, and arrested the ex-tenant. They later recovered the jewellery, the mobile phone and other items which had also been removed.

Bull gores a teenage girl A TEENAGE girl was seriously injured after being gored during a bull-run in Hellín, Albacete, in Spain’s Castilla La Mancha region. The 14-year-old, standing at the road-side with a group of friends when the bull attacked, was gored in both thighs after being knocked over. A video posted on social media showed one of the men directing the bull, attempting to coax it away from the girl with a cape. But he was also charged and tossed into the air by the animal, suffering broken bones. Organisers said the youngster should not have been standing where she was, and the Mayor added: “The event complied with all the safety regulations. “But it was impossible to control all parts of the route, or to eliminate recklessness.”

Police K9 unit scores already ARONA’S new Police K9 unit (UCPP) has made 20 drugpossession arrests, mainly involving marijuana, cocaine and hashish, in just a week. The results, says Arona Council, relate to arrests in Las Galletas, Costa del

Silencio, Ten Bel, El Fraile, Los Cristianos, Las Rosas and three shopping centres in Las Americas. Judicial procedures have begun and the fines range from between 601 and 30,000 euros. The UCPP operates as an independent unit, working 24-hour shifts to monitor schools, squares, shopping areas, bus stations, and other areas.

Subject: Ten Bel

Dear Editor, I WOULD like to bring your attention to the plight of the Ten Bel Tower area. I have many pictures, some which I have taken, and others which have been given to me, all showing the disgraceful state of the whole area, including Damon Park, the tower and the park leading back to Carabela. The whole area looks like a war-zone and is very creepy to walk through. And, I imagine, it’s very unpleasant for tourists to the area. There was an attempt made at a clean-up about a week ago, but it was a pretty poor effort. All the dust and rubble was brushed into corners in a vain effort to hide all the mess and dirt. We all know that it will not stay in this state for long. Bored teenagers, homeless people, drug-addicts and disaffected adults will soon sort that. I walked through the administration building after the so-called clean up and was shocked at what I found. The clean-up extended only to what can be seen from the window-less holes. Today, I walked through the Ten Bel office building with a small family. They were horrified that this deprivation is in such close proximity to residential and tourist accommodation.

It is clear that the local authorities are complicit in allowing this to continue, and are derelict in their duties of health and safety, as well as the regeneration of the whole area. These two pictures were taken AFTER the clean-up took place. Help me to draw a line under this. Help get something done. Make our voices heard. Make your voices heard! Subject: Caine Beattie

Dear Editor, We want to say thank-you to all who were involved in finding my nephew, Caine Beattie, after he went missing in Tenerife recently. Fortunately, he spoke on the phone to his brother, who told him to contact the consulate, and the police helped Caine to get to Santa Cruz. The Consulate was closed for the weekend, and he lived rough on the streets for a couple of nights because his passport and money had been stolen. The Consulate is limited in what help it can offer, but it put us in touch with Beverley of the Noah’s Ark charitable association, which had people already looking for Caine in town and on social media. Noah’s Ark - El Arca de Noe - collected him from Santa Cruz and took him down South. And one of their volunteers, Ivan, stayed with him night and day until we could get to him. Beverley and the team booked return flights for the three of us, even paying on their own card when ours didn’t work. We repaid them the same evening. Before Caine could fly back to the UK, a doctor had to certify that he was fit to fly, and, again, Beverley arranged this and took us to the doctor’s surgery. Even after I arrived with Caine’s brother and linked up with him, Noah’s Ark people stayed with us and helped every step of the way. Without them it would have been much more difficult. We would like to say a big thank-you again to the team at Noah’s Ark - Beverley, Dennis and Ivan. They do a great job and can step in when the help the Consulate can offer is limited. Yours sincerely, Lyndsey Beattie

Bull’s historic

revenge!

SPANISH history will be made next month when a tame bull will be used during Mallorca’s traditional Fornalutx bull-run. The decision follows a new animal-protection law, passed by the Balearic Parliament in July, which bans bulls being slaughtered during fights and other

traditional events on the island. Fornalutx’s correbou (bull-fight) spectacle has taken place for more than a century. But its council couldn’t prove it had been staged during every single year in that time, which would have protected the festival as a cultural heritage. For the first time in history, a tame bull will be borrowed from a local farmer this year. And, instead of being

slaughtered, it will be returned to him afterwards. Mayor Antoni Aguilo, who oversees the Fornalutx village, said the controversial law would end the correbou. He also believes the event will fail, financially, because bull-spectacle enthusiasts will ignore the watereddown version. But delighted animal-rights groups argue that the bull is humiliated by spectators, and suffers immense pain before it is finally killed.

Hero tackled a forest blaze A MAN suffered third-degree burns after attempting to extinguish a fire in the Los Raíces BBQ area in El Rosario last Sunday evening. It happened in a small forest area, and he did his best to contain the blaze

until the fire brigade was summoned. The 58-year-old was taken to the University Hospital for medical treatment, while firefighters doused the blaze within an hour. Unfortunately, it affected 70 square metres of forest, but it would have been a lot more but for the heroics of the man.

Deathly way to worship a saint PEOPLE who have recently experienced a near-brush with death were carried in open coffins during last Saturday’s bizarre ceremony in north-west Spain. The Fiesta de Santa Marta de Ribarteme, held in Las Nieves, a small Galician town, is an annual pilgrimage for residents who have come close to dying, for whatever reason, and want to pay their respects to the town’s patron saint. Family and friends, all dressed appropriately for funerals, carry the coffins of the “survivors” through the town’s streets to the Santa Marta de Ribarteme church. Those taking part in the procession, led by the Santa Marta effigy, say

Bonita stables with Walter Vlielander, kindly provided them with horse-riding, carriage-riding, plus a bite to eat: sandwiches cake, crisps, pop and, of course, lots of fun and games with some of the Pony Club children. Volunteers brought along the necessary tuck: hotdogs, cakes, etc, and a lady gave them presents she’d knitted herself; little

ponies for the boys and brooches for the girls! As well as horse-riding lessons, the stables run a Pony Club for children, carriage-riding for adults and a ladies’ club. And the children enjoyed themselves so much that Claire and Walter might have to consider starting another group, especially for the Guaidyl kids!

GUARDIA Civil officials have launched an “online digital office” to save time and travel for the public, with many transactions now being carried out by internet. It will no longer be necessary to attend the nearest station, which is often in another town, for various issues. These relate to acquiring licences for fireworks, clay-pigeon-shooting pistols etc, or obtaining private security guards. The aim is to cut the queues and administration workload for Guardia officers, so they can focus on more specific police tasks.

Madrid buses are blazing nuisance MADRID’S municipal transportation company, EMT, will be recruiting 220 new maintenance workers in the next year or so to help combat the worrying problem of fires breaking out on its bus fleet. So far this year, nine EMT vehicles have burst into flames, two of these incidents happening last week. “The hiring of these specialists is the first serious measure we’ve seen,” said Javier Herranz, from the UGT labour union. “But it is also essential for them to speed up the purchase of new buses.” Under its current purchasing plan, the company, owned by Madrid City Hall, is set to reduce the average age of its fleet from the current 8.3 years to 6.6 years.

EMT is also set to incorporate automatic extinguishers in the whole fleet because, now, just nine buses carry them. An EMT spokesperson said that such blazes were nothing new. “They used to happen in the 1960s and the 1990s - and they’re happening now.” In 2012, Madrid City Hall, then governed by the conservative Popular Party, suspended the renovation of new vehicles until 2016. Since then, 45 buses have caught fire, an average of nine per year. And this year has already seen the same number of bus fires. The last two incidents took place barely 48 hours apart last week: the first, on the Monday, on Cardenal Herrera Oria avenue, was a 14-year-old vehicle. Then, on the Thursday morning, another bus, 12 years old, caught fire on Velázquez street. Neither bus was damaged, and there was no

loss of passengers’ property. EMT has pointed out that the ratio of fires by year and fleet is 0.47%, a figure it says is similar to other transport companies. But both the public company and unions agree that age is a factor, and that the incidents are happening with vehicles aged 10 years and over. The most common causes of fires are short circuits, and problems with alternators

or catalytic converters. “The responsibility lies with whoever increased the useful life of the vehicles and cut investment,” said City Hall Mobility Councillor Inés Sabanés. Herranz, the UGT union representative added: “It’s true that there is an inherited problem here. The PP left things in a disastrous state, but Ahora Madrid, the current party in power, has had two

years to change things.” Herranz also pointed out that the EMT was working with very old vehicles, which are subject to high temperatures, adding: “They heat up, and, as they give off oil and fuel, they end up catching fire.” In his opinion, the real number of such incidents is triple the official numbers supplied by EMT. “Only the truly scandalous cases come to light,” he said.

BoE and ECB in the spotlight By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

PARTWAY through July, the pound tumbled to an eightmonth low against the euro, with GBP/ EUR sliding from 1.1432 euros to 1.1123. While the pound has briefly pushed above 1.12 euros a couple of times in recent weeks, GBP has failed to sustain any momentum. EUR/GBP, on the other hand, has been moving between £0.8830 and £0.8990, while EUR/USD surged all the way to a 2½-year high of $1.1767, in the wake of the last Federal Reserve interest-rate decision.

Sliding UK inflation led many to bet that the Bank of England (BoE) would keep interest rates on hold for the foreseeable future, and those expectations have left the pound pressured over the last couple of weeks. Other UK data has also failed to offer GBP any encouragement, with the UK economy growing by just 0.3% in the second quarter, and retail spending slumping. Rumours of infighting in the Tory government, and conflicting commentary on the subject of a transitory deal for the UK once it Brexits, are another reason the pound has, so far, been unable to move away from its recent, eight-month low against the euro. The euro, meanwhile, was bolstered by the European Central Bank’s (ECB) intention to discuss winding down quantitative easing in the autumn. EUR gains were also the

result of the US dollar tumbling in the face of falling Federal Reserve interest-rate-hike bets. The Fed adopted a cautious stance on the subject of domestic inflation at July’s gathering, an attitude which left the odds of a third-rate adjustment taking place in 2017 in doubt. Additionally, questions about President Donald Trump’s ability to successfully introduce his planned spending and tax adjustments have further limited

USD exchange rates, helping the euro strengthen in the process. Over the next couple of weeks, developments in Brexit negotiations will remain a driver of the GBP/ EUR exchange rate. Indications that negotiations are progressing well would be pound-supportive, while further signs of discord could send GBP/EUR to new lows. This week, the biggest cause of pound movement is likely to be the Bank of England’s interest-rate announce-

ment. If the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) is more split than previously on the subject of when interest rates should rise, it could give the pound a serious shot in the arm. However, if the number of members of the MPC voting for an immediate interestrate adjustment has fallen in light of the decline in UK inflation, GBP exchange rates are liable to slide. Big house, posh car - major bank fraud AN “ordinary” bank employee in the small municipality of Almoradí, in Spain’s Alicante province, is said to have got away with a huge customerscam for 25 years.

It was worth, in total, around $1.5m (1.28m euros). And, in all that time, she lived way beyond her means, owning a big house, driving a luxury car, and taking expensive trips to exotic destinations with her partner. She even flaunted her wealthy lifestyle on social media. But not any more. Her fairy-tale life came to an end when the Guardia Civil discovered the origin

of her wealth, and how it was obtained. For an entire quartercentury, she had, allegedly, been stealing from a Russian client at her bank.

She is now being charged with bank fraud and forging documents. Investigators believe that the 51-year-old suspect, whose identity has not

been disclosed, diverted around 1.28m euros from an account held by the Russian national, who is now aged 80. The probe began just over a month ago, when the account holder, of an unnamed bank, filed a complaint with the local Guardia Civil in Almoradí. He told them that every time he returned to his native country, his account would be depleted a little more. Police sources say he arrived in Rojales, some 8km from Almoradí, in 1992. He then opened a bank account in the latter municipality, and developed a trusting relationship with the suspect. The account-holder rarely checked his balance. But in June, he requested

a detailed statement because he was considering switching banks. That was when he realised that over $1.5m was missing. Investigators analysed all the transactions linked to that account, and realised that most money transfers had taken place while the account-holder was in Russia. Every time he returned to Russia, his bank balance would drop a little more. But whenever he requested information about the account, the employee would provide unofficial documents, which she had forged, to make it look as though his balance was unchanged. Once her cover was blown, the woman was arrested and released, pending trial following her arraignment.

Trust Me

Tuesday 8th August, BBC1, 21.00 Cath Hardacre is a good nurse. Caring and hard-working, she does her best for everyone in the cardiology ward she works in. However, when she raises her concerns about the standards slipping in the hospital, Cath’s world takes a turn for the worse. After being sacked for whistleblowing, Cath turns to her best friend Dr. Ally Sutton, who is leaving her life as an A&E doctor and emigrating to New Zealand with her new husband. At a drunken party Cath finds Ally’s discarded paperwork and makes the desperate decision to take a second chance at life - by stealing her best friend’s identity. Cath, now calling herself Ally, accepts a job at a failing emergency department in Edinburgh and embarks upon a new life with her young daughter Molly. However, with her good-for-nothing expartner Karl trying to spend time with them and a journalist chasing her about the issues at her former hospital, how will Ally cope with leading a double life? Cath Hardacre is played by Jodie Whittaker, Dr Andy Brenner by Emun Elliott, Dr Brigitte Rayne by Sharon Small and Karl is played by Blake Harrison.

Gabby Logan hosts the opening night of the World Athletics Championships, which could see Britain’s greatest distance athlete Mo Farah add to his glorious golden collection of medals. Mo races for 10,000 metres gold at 9.20pm and is the man to beat. He is the defending world and Olympic champion and has been unbeaten in major championships since the 2012 Olympics. Usain Bolt - who is running at his championships in his record-breaking career also lines up on opening night. He goes in the 100m first round from 8.20pm. Britain’s CJ Ujah - who has run consistently under 10 seconds this season - will also be confident of progressing to tomorrow’s semi-final. Also in action in the women’s 1500m heats is Laura Muir - the record-breaking Briton will be hoping to progress safely to the semi-final in her bid for her first major championship outdoor medal. Michael Johnson, Colin Jackson, Denise Lewis and Paula Radcliffe provide the analysis with commentary from Steve Cram, Brendan Foster, Andrew Cotter, Steve Backley and Toni Minichiello. Reports and interviews are provided by Phil Jones.

Secrets Of Silicon Valley

Sunday 6 August, BBC2, 20.00 Journalist, tech blogger and director of The Centre For The Analysis Of Social Media Jamie Bartlett - author of several books on technology and politics - explores the reality behind Silicon Valley’s glittering promise to build

a better world. The Tech Gods - those who run the world’s biggest tech companies believe progress is powered by technological revolution. They are, they say, not just thinking how to make money, but how to do things in a new and better way, a process they call ‘disruption’. In the programme Jamie meets people who claim they can reverse climate change, create sustainable burgers and connect cities in a new way. He visits Uber’s lavish offices in San Francisco and hears the company’s claim to be improving our cities. But in Hyderabad in India Jamie sees for himself some of the human consequences of Uber’s utopian vision, such as drivers driven to suicide over falling earnings. But do the problems with disruption go much deeper than that? Back in the USA and riding shotgun in a truck as it drives itself for more than 100 miles on a highway, Jamie asks what the automation of millions of jobs, part of Silicon Valley’s global disruption, will mean for all of us. An artificial intelligence pioneer who is working to replace doctors with software says an economic shock is coming, faster than any of us have realised. And on a remote island hideout Jamie meets a former Facebook executive who has armed himself with a gun and lives as much off the grid as possible, because he fears this new revolution could lead to social breakdown and the collapse of capitalism. In the second episode, which airs on Sunday 13 August, Jamie meets the people who harnessed social media to change the shape of politics in the US.

Diana: In Her Own Words

Sunday 6th August, Channel 4, 20:00

A brand new in-depth documentary featuring footage of Diana speaking candidly on a range of subjects. Airing shortly before the 20th anniversary of her death, this revelatory film draws on a unique historical archive: video tapes recorded by Diana’s speech coach Peter Settelen, who she hired to help her prepare and publicly present her own account of events, and reinvent her public persona. Some of this footage is being broadcast for the first time ever; none of it has been seen on British television before. The footage that Settelen captured at Diana’s private residence in Kensington Palace in 1992 and 1993 is the only known unmediated video with Diana ever recorded. It shows Diana rehearsing her speaking voice and also reflecting at length on her own biography and offering revealing insight into her upbringing, her courtship with the Prince of Wales, her marriage and her public life.

Eden

Monday 7th August, Channel 4, 22:00

In March 2016, 23 men and women left everyday life behind to live in a remote part of the British Isles. Disillusioned with 21st century living, they entered Eden as strangers to isolate themselves from the modern world and be given the chance to start again and create a new society from scratch. Their first months were shown on Channel 4 in 2016. But as life in Eden progressed, the promise of a utopia looked like anything but... This stripped series across the week follows the remaining time in Eden, to find out how the dream turned into a nightmare. Life in Eden proved too tough for some, and after just three months, two had already left. By the summer, hunger pervades and divisions within the camp are already becoming apparent as boatman Anton and carpenter Raph separate themselves and continue building a winter camp in the woods away from the beach and the communal living space.

My Family, Partition And Me: India 1947

Wednesday 9th August, BBC1, 21.00

Anita Rani explores the human impact of the Partition of India through the intimate stories of four British families, including her own, in a new two-part landmark BBC One series. Using compelling first-hand testimony from British Partition survivors, their children and grandchildren retrace the dramatic journeys they were forced to make during Partition. Representing the different communities caught up in the violence - Muslim, Hindu, Sikh and British colonial - they travel for the first time to the homes in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh that their families fled in terror. Their journeys include emotional meetings with long-lost family friends, encounters with neighbours of other religions who shielded their family at huge personal risk, and extraordinary stories of courage and fortitude among the horrors of the communal violence that had erupted. Anita Rani and her mother become the first members of their family to return to the small village in Pakistan where her grandfather lived until 1947. Anita investigates the shocking and distressing events that happened there when her grandfather’s first wife, children and her great grandfather lost their lives.

Royal Cousins at War BBC2, 19:30

Two-part documentary looking at how Europe’s royal relatives ended up at war with each other. At the outbreak of the First World War three cousins reigned over Europe’s greatest powers - Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and King George V of Britain. This looks at the role played by the three monarchs, and their relationships with each other, in the outbreak of war. The first episode tells the story of the emerging divisions and rivalries between the interrelated royal houses of Europe and features the little-known story of the two Danish sisters, Princess Alexandra and Princess Dagmar, who had pulled off the dynastic coup of the 19th century by marrying the heirs to both the British and Russian thrones. Following the invasion of their native Denmark by Prussia in 1864 during the Wars of German Unification, the sisters became the core of an anti-Prussian coalition that prefigured the great anti-German alliance.

In the final episode of the series, Prudie and Tholly spy French sails on the horizon and the area is put on alert. George passes Drake’s smithy on his return from Parliament and Francis Basset convenes a meeting to devise the defences of Cornwall. Ross is put in command of a squad of volunteers while Demelza continues to be courted by Hugh in secret. Emma admits she is attracted to Sam but cannot overcome her lack of religious faith, while George takes the fact that Drake is living in the smithy - on the edge of Trenwith land - as provocation by Ross. He orders Tom Harry to ensure that Drake’s residency is short-lived and Tom is only too happy to oblige, leaving Ross facing threats both foreign and domestic.

Protection of customers By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

I HAVE written about the floor clause (Clausulas Suelo), and the consequences of its nullity, in several editions of Canarian Weekly. This “hot” matter, which affects many mortgages, is changing every month, either by means of new Laws, or new regulations, or judgements. I could say that, until 2013, a foreclosing proceeding was an unstoppable “runaway train”. Once the bank decided to enforce

the mortgage, it was almost impossible to reduce its impact. The bank always won, even by enforcing abusive and illegal clauses. But, through the judgement of the European Court of Justice in Aziz, things changed. A Barcelona judge, sitting in a foreclosing proceeding case, saw that there were many abusive and illegal clauses in the mortgage, and that the Spanish Mortgage Law was not enough to protect the interest of the clients. He decided to send the case to the European Court, which, finally, stated that the said Law was “unbalanced” and did not protect, sufficiently, the interests of bank customers. It also said that many clauses contained in a Mortgage Deed were abusive, such as floor clause, moratorium interests (interests coming from the delayed payment), etc. This famous European

Court judgement meant the Spanish Government and the Spanish Legislative Power had to modify the foreclosing proceeding (Law 1/2013), to include the study of abusive clauses within that proceeding, and also the modification of Law of Customers Protection in 2014. The rights of the customer and, in general, consumer protection, is a legal area in which you can see the influence of public administrative law in private relationships. The public authorities intervene in private, commercial operations carried out by consumers, which, traditionally, have been classified as purchase/sale or service transactions. The legal framework applicable to a customer’s protection in Spain has experienced important amendments in the last 10 years, especially in terms of product liability and class actions, and application of

European rules. Legislative and regulatory framework The consumer-protection regime in Spain is a balance between private law, administrative law and self-regulation. Customers’ protection comes from the Spanish Constitution of 1978, and the European Union (EU) rules. Customers’ rights are controlled by the Government and courts. From 1978 (year of the Constitution), consumer rights have been increasing to guarantee the customer’s rights. The said Constitution states that public authorities will guarantee the defence of consumers; protect their safety, health, and economic interests; promote the education of, and information to, consumers, and will also encourage consumers’ organisations by attending to their requests about issues which may affect them. The General Law on the

Protection of Consumers and Users (modified in 2014) establishes the basic framework for customer-rights protection in Spain. The purpose of these consumer-rights is to enable purchase decisions to be made, freely and rationally, to make the information provided to consumers understandable, to provide information about consumer-rights and obligations, and how to exercise them, to prevent risks and to promote sustainable consumption. This includes, of course, the Mortgage Loans Contracts. At the time of writing, the Spanish Government is studying the approval of a new Mortgage Law, with more guarantees for customers. Vilaflor - Tenerife’s ‘Goldilocks Zone’ THE village of Vilaflor is a perfect place to buy a new or second home, or start a business, and, year by year, it is becoming ever more popular with sports and outdoor-activities enthusiasts. Lying at 1500 metres above sea level on the island of Tenerife, Vilaflor boasts the title of Spain’s highest village. Pine forests surround the town, creating the kind of incredible

landscape you’d expect to see in the mountains of Switzerland, or in some of the well-known national parks of the US. Flowers abound in this lovely village, and Vilaflor’s landscape is sculpted into surreal platforms of creamy terraces, covered in “jable”, a local volcanic stone which is found in abundance on the island. This covering is used for trapping moisture from mist and clouds, providing irrigation for the many crops grown in this area. This picturesque town was once only a popular destination for scientists and explorers, but, today,

the town is becoming more popular amongst naturalists, walkers, cyclists and runners, and is the starting point for many trails. It is also on the main road from the south of Tenerife to the crater of Mount Teide. Vilaflor could be said to be in the “Goldilocks Zone”, as it has all the necessary amenities that you find in the towns lower down the mountain, but without any of the queueing and traffic that can make life harassing in the seaside urbanisations. However, in just 25 minutes, you can be at the ocean side, enjoying the beach.

Let’s face it, where else in the world could you live in a mountainous, high-altitude location, surrounded by pine forests, and yet be only 25 minutes by car or bus from beaches and allyear-round sun? We at Property Campus love this area of Tenerife, and are now working on a long-term project to promote this unique, picture-postcard village as THE place to relocate. We have a good selection of properties available to buy, many with gardens and parking areas. Should there be any alterations or renovations that you’d like to have done, our

in-house, professional construction team can transform your purchase into the home you’ve always dreamed of. If you are looking for somewhere away from the busy coast to relax and connect with nature, please contact us for more information about the great opportunities we have available in this area. The Bug Grub Couple

BBC1, 19:30

Documentary following insect expert Dr Sarah Beynon and award-winning chef Andy Holcroft as they try to bring insect-based food products to the mainstream market. The couple have renovated Sarah’s family’s beef farm just outside St David’s, Pembrokeshire, and turned it into the Bug Farm, a visitor attraction with an insect museum, a zoo, a gallery a research centre and a restaurant, as well as continuing with the traditional beef cattle. While Sarah looks after the education and research side, Andy runs the restaurant, which has a dual menu - normal food next to bug versions. One of his signature dishes is the bug burger, a mix of five different bugs with a locust garnish.

A moment to reflect!

So you want to be super-blonde? By Carl pattison from Robot

BUT really blonde, and you want it to be the cleanest, whitest, purest of all blondes?

Then there’s a price to pay for taking your hair to this level. Lifting your hair to a super-light blonde means stripping it of all natural tones, leaving behind little, or no, yellow. Taking it to this extreme means the near-distruction of the hair shaft, and this is why breakage and dehydration often occurs. Without the correct methods, you might not be left with silver-blonde locks;

it may be more a case of taking your hair home from the salon in a carrier bag! When lifted to a pure blonde, your hair is, literally, one step away from melting, and this is why it needs to be analysed and/or tested, before it’s lifted to this shade. During the colouring process, the bonds of your hair are broken down to an extreme level. If not controlled properly, you’ll be left with a texture likened

to wet cotton wool. Once lightened, your hair MUST be treated with the utmost care. It has to be cut regularly, and masques and reconstructing shampoos used as well. If care isn’t taken to control dryness, then breakage can still occur, months after your hair was lightened. Still want to be super blonde? Then please consult your salon, and never try this at home.

Does my bum look big in this? By Carl Pattison

NO ONE wants to hear “yes”, and no one likes to be told they don’t look good when choosing clothes. I hate trying on clothes, but needs must. I don’t even like someone coming with me, and I prefer to shop alone. Yet some can’t, or don’t like to, make decisions on their own; they need another opinion, and not just one of a commission-hungry sales-

person. A true, honest answer is what’s needed when you’re clothes shopping, but not one of a jealous friend, or your husband who’s bored. It’s easy to say, and harder to find, but, sometimes, you need the eye of someone who doesn’t know you, to make you think outside the box. Constantly picking up the same things and never experimenting is often the downfall of most women. I’ve shopped a few times with friends, forcing them to try on things that they would never

pick up. It’s not always love at first sight with some items, but looking at things in a different perspective is, sometimes, what a woman needs. If you require a new wardrobe, a special outfit for an occasion or simply a wardrobe change, contact me, your regular, fashion columnista. I’m now available for personal shopping trips, alone or in groups. You can call me on the salon number, or find me on Facebook at Robot Hair. Looking forward to shopping with you!

MOST of us think of a mirror as being essential in certain areas of the house; in the bathroom, for example, and maybe in the hall or bedroom to check your appearance before you go out. But, for interior designers, the mirror is a very versatile tool, and can do so much more than letting you see your reflection. They can be used for practical purposes to overcome problems. Mirrors have the ability to enhance the feeling of light and space in a room, and give you an impression of depth. So, for example, if you have a dark, narrow hallway, putting up a run of mirrors will make the area look twice as wide, and amplify any ambient light. Equally, in an awkward corner, a mirror will give the impression that the area is much bigger and brighter than it actually is. Most people will be familiar with mirrors being used over a fireplace in an English lounge, for example. This isn’t because you are likely to look in it, but because it will reflect the light from the windows and make the room lighter, particularly in cooler

climates like the UK where curtains are often partly closed, or the daylight is muted. You can also use mirrors in a creative way, to make a statement and give a polished touch to your interiors. The frame may tone with your furniture, and you can be very creative with rich swirls and shapes - or be minimalist. Care should be taken to ensure that the mirror is in proportion to the space available; a very small mirror on a large expanse of wall would look ridiculous, as would a huge mirror in a very small room. You should also avoid

fixing a mirror directly opposite stairs, because it can distort perception and be dangerous. Fortunately, it’s possible to get mirrors made to size and even engraved, and patterns can be lasered on the glass itself, to form a kind of abstract frame. So, whether you want to add the wow factor to your interior, make a statement or amplify light and space, a thoughtfully-chosen, well-positioned mirror could be the answer. All items mentioned, as well as interior-design advice, are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789729.

The land of smiles ...at Thai Botanico By Tara Scarlata WITH the hot Tenerife summer now in full effect, shady terraces, fresh light cuisine and cool cocktails are on the top of everyone’s to-do list. With this in mind, we headed to Thai Botanico, at the Safari Center, along Tenerife’s Golden Mile in Playa de Las Americas, to try some of the tasty delights it has to offer. With its lush, botanical terrace and beautiful, bold cuisine, it is easy to see why Thai Botanico is a firm favourite with tourists and residents alike. We visited as a group of four on a busy Friday evening, and we were straight away greeted by the friendly, efficient door host, who led us to our table. With the restaurant already almost full by 7pm, it’s no wonder that advanced booking is highly recommended. The waitress told us that each dish was freshly prepared to order, so you can adjust the level of spice in each dish. There is also a handy chili guide on the menu to help you out if you are unsure. We started with a mixture of appetisers and salads: firstly, the Thai-style, chargrilled spare ribs, marinated overnight in a special blend of caramelised Thai herbs and spices. The ribs were sweet and

sticky, with a light spice and deep in flavour, scattered with sesame seeds. I was thankful for the fingerdipping bowl because you need to eat these with your hands to get every last morsel. The Salt & Pepper Crispy Chicken Wings are out of this world! Stir-fried with chilies, peppers and onions, and

served with a slice of lime, they are perfectly crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. My dish of the evening was the Glass Noodle Salad, served with Minced Chicken & King Prawn. The salad was beautifully spiced, and left a gentle tingle on the lips. On to the mains, and I was looking forward to trying

one of the newest dishes, the Phad Se Ew: tender steak, stir-fried with flat rice noodles, crunchy oriental vegetables and a light, chili sauce. It really was delicious, and a great addition to the already hard to choose from menu! The Masaman curry is a must in any Thai Restaurant, and the one served here really is a cut above the rest. It is rich in flavour, with soft lamb and aubergines that melt in your mouth. And with cashews that give a crunch, you’ll find yourself finishing every last spoonful. To accompany any dish, we recommend the Thai speciality, pineapple rice. It’s served in half a pineapple, and looks too good to eat. But, as you dig in, you get a lovely, flavoursome rice, packed full of surprises. Our last main was the steamed Sea Bream in Lemon, Chili and Garlic. It’s a very healthy dish, basking in a light broth with subtle flavours of garlic and chili that complement, yet not overwhelm, the delicate fish. A beautiful lemon sorbet (served with vodka if you wish) cleanses the palate, and gives enough time to take a look at the dessert menu. As soon as we saw the hotchocolate fudge cake, we decided: one of those with two spoons for the girls. It was rich and deep chocolate with vanilla ice cream, which melted against the cake and provided a lovely contrast between hot and cold.

The only problem was deciding who would have the last bite! We were civilised (which is difficult when it comes to chocolate) and split it! The other must-have is the house-special, mango cheesecake, and all we can say about this is, “try it - you won’t be disappointed!” To wash it all down, you’ll find an extensive wine list and a fabulous selection of Pan-Asian-influenced cocktails. Or, in keeping with your surroundings, there is also ice-cold Thai beer on offer. The restaurant was busy all night with families, groups and couples, and, with such a great range of dishes and an extensive vegetarian selection, it really is suitable for everyone. If you are looking for Thai cuisine in Tenerife, this is where you should head. Thailand is known as the Land of Smiles, and in Thai Botanico you are greeted with a smile, and every member of staff is happy to help from the moment you arrive, to the moment you leave. The service is second to none. Be assured, you will leave with a smile on your face and a tingle on your lips. Opening times: MondaySaturday, 1.30-11.30pm; Sunday, 6-11pm. Enjoy a special daytime discount of 15% Monday-Saturday, from 1.30-5pm. Reservations recommended: Tel. 922 788 697, or email reservations@ venturegroup88.com

The dangers of heat

Support pouring in for tragic Anabelle

WITH summer in full swing, we would like to remind you to take extra care with your pets, ensuring that they have a constant supply of fresh, clean, cool water to drink.

They need adequate shade, and must be walked early in the morning and later in the afternoon to avoid the heat of the day, and to prevent their paws burning on the hot pavements. Please remember never to leave your dog in a car, even for a short time. They can overheat very quickly, with disastrous results. Once again, we have a large number of small dogs and puppies at the refuge, all of which have a clean bill of health, and are fully inoculated, passported and castrated before leaving our refuge. We do not ask for payment for the dogs, but donations are welcome, which go towards the vast running costs of our refuge. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need

tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated

directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol

THE fund for Anabelle Zobnina, the eight-year-old Tenerife girl suffering a rare cancer, has risen to around 12,000 euros in just over a fortnight. Anabelle was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumour, nearly two years ago, and, despite a period of remission, the disease has returned. She lives in El Galeon, Adeje, with her divorced mother, Maria, who says the only possible cure is in Washington DC, where a surgeon believes he can cure her. Together with Liz Montague, from children’s charity Helping Hands, which donated 3,000 euros, Maria set up a fund-raiser on Gofundme, in search of the 100,000 euros she will need for the journey

and the treatment. “We have exhausted all the treatment options for medulloblastoma treatment here,” said Maria. “We have done, and are doing, everything we possibly can here. “As a parent, you never stop researching treatment options, and I have found a medical trial in the United States that can help Anabelle.” Liz added: “Helping Hands will do everything possible to help Anabelle and her mum. They are so brave, and they deserve every ounce of help because they are both battling so hard to beat the cancer.” If you would like to donate to Anabelle’s cause, please go to: w w w. g o f u n d m e . c o m / annabelles-medical-cancerfund

The friendliest Kids and kittens! cat in town!

All David wants to do is sit on your lap and have cuddles. It’s true! So much so that, at the K9 Open Day recently, he decided to help raise funds for the refuge, by selling cuddles for 50 cents each. Everyone loved him, and he made a fortune on the day. David has feline AIDS, but that’s no death sentence. It simply means he can live a perfectly normal life and be with other AIDS-positive cats, although not with other cats. David also does not want to live with dogs, but that’s just because he’s not keen on them! Lovable David is around two years old, and his perfect home would be with someone who can spend lots of time with him, and give endless cuddles. If

you can offer David a safe and loving, forever home, please contact us. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-and-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker, K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats.

RIP Ron Eastwood

TENERIFE businessman Ron Eastwood, who lived in Valle San Lorenzo, died on Tuesday, after bravely battling ill-health. His funeral will be held at San Blas Church, Golf del Sur, this Tuesday (8th August) at 10.30. All are welcome, to pay their last respects.

CATS make great pets; they’re low maintenance, and thrive in families with children. They love to leap, run and pounce, which is great fun to watch. And they love being stroked and cuddled. Here in Tenerife we have many cats of all ages awaiting their forever homes. Whether you decide to adopt a kitten, or an adult cat, they will all have lots of love and affection to give. Introducing kids to pets is an important way to teach them to respect animals. If you choose to have a kitten, it’s important to lay out some rules ahead of time. These need to go both ways: rules for the kitten, and rules for the kids. Choose areas where your pet will be allowed to roam. Will it be an indoor cat, or will it be allowed to go outside? Is it allowed to jump on the sides? The children’s rules need to be clear, too. Set boundaries on when, and how, to play with the kitten, and how to pick it up. Make it clear that it's not OK to pull on its tail and whiskers, or any other part of its body. Set each child a role in the care of your new pet. One

could be responsible for making sure that the kitten has fresh food and water every day, while another could ensure that its bedding is clean, and toys are available. Cleaning the litter box should be done by adults, as children do forget to wash their hands thoroughly, and this task calls for regular hand-washing. When you bring your kitten home, your children will be excited and ready to play with her. Remember, your kitten will be less stressed if you let it get comfortable with its new surroundings and family at its own pace. Remind your

children that their new companion needs time to get comfortable in its new home, and soon they will have a friendly, playful and lovable pet. Adoptions Please consider adopting a kitten/cat from us. Contact us via our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com or ring/ whatsapp Maria (English) on 646629129, seven days a week 9-6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm on 671282773. All kittens go on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Dog of the week - Bobby BIG is beautiful, right? Well, no one seems to want big dogs, especially if they live in an apartment. But, guess what, your dog doesn’t care, as long as he gets long walks every day. Check out Bobby, six years old and left on the shelf because he is a big boy. Of course, if you live on a finca or have a big garden he will love it, but it's not a necessity, as long as he gets his exercise. Please call Elaine on 678 015653 for more information, and to arrange a meeting or no-obligation trial. The last two dogs-of-the-week, featured in the Canarian Weekly, have found their forever homes. Can we make it three with Bobby? We sincerely hope so! Upcoming summer events This Sunday (6th August) we have not one, but two events, for you. 30-year reign is over for football chief accused of corruption

Angel is grounded! ANGEL Maria Villar’s three-decade reign as President of the Spanish Football Federation has come to an end with a oneyear suspension for, allegedly, being involved in corruption. Villar, Fifa’s Senior VicePresident, behind bars since police detained him, together with his son Gorka Villar, and one of two Tenerife football officials during police raids of the national federation headquarters and other properties, were granted bail on Monday. The other official had already paid a bond to avoid being locked up. Initially, it was clear to the country’s top sports authority, the Higher Council of Sport, that Villar was unwilling to step down from the post he had held since 1988. And officials acted promptly to remove him from office in an attempt to limit the damage caused to the national sport, naming treasurer Juan Luis Larrea as interim President. Villar, who believed he was all-powerful, suddenly realised he was vulnerable and resigned from his positions as Uefa VicePresident and Fifa Senior Vice-President. The far-reaching investi-

gation into his affairs, and those of others believed to be involved, has rocked Spanish football. Court documents indicate that, besides misappropriated funds, Villar, allegedly, corrupted several regional federations by offering favours in exchange for votes. Spanish Sports Council President Jose Ramon Lete said the 14-member board voted unanimously to suspend Villar and Juan Padron, Federation VicePresident of economic affairs and President of Tenerife’s Regional Federation, who was also arrested in the Guardia Civil’s “Operation Soule”. Lete added that the Higher Council want to take part

in the case as an injured party, alongside the Spanish League. The scandal also has repercussions for football beyond Spain’s borders. But one thing is sure: Villar, at the heart of both governing bodies since the 1990s, is out of the picture for good. He had worked closely with some international football leaders, since indicted by the US Justice Department. Villar was also singled out for questionable conduct in the 2014 Fifa report on the World Cup bidding process. He was held at the Soto del Real prison, following his questioning by National Court judge Santiago Pedraz, until his bail application was finally

accepted by Pedraz. He said previously that he was a “flight risk” after detailing how Villar, allegedly, misappropriated private and public funds “at least since 2009”. In a 44-page ruling, which included several quotes from phone-taps carried out by police, Pedraz detailed why state prosecutors allege that Villar used his influence as Federation President to funnel private and public funds into regional federations. These were exchanged for votes, enabling him to remain in power for eight consecutive terms. The state prosecutor also suspects that Villar used his control of the TV rights for Spain’s

friendly matches, to secure cash benefits for his son. Gorka, a sports lawyer, has worked for Conmebol, The South American Football Confederation, under three presidents, who were all implicated in corruption cases. Also arrested was Ramon Hernandez, Secretary of Tenerife’s Regional Federation. But Judge Pedraz at first denied bail, then made an about-turn and released them, having previously set a bail bond for Hernandez. Villar, a former Athletic Bilbao player, and the other three men, are all accused of improper management, misappropriation of funds, corruption and falsifying documents. Inigo Mendez de Vigo, Spain’s Sports Minister, has said the Government would be prepared to take charge of the Federation’s operations to ensure that competition was not affected. But it has yet to take that step. The Spanish Federation is in charge of the national men and women teams, the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup), setting the calendars of the club competitions, as well as the appointment of referees, among other areas. But it does not control the top two divisions of the Spanish men’s league, nor the women’s league, which are governed by La Liga.

Lightning Bolt all set to say farewell USAIN Bolt, an Olympic legend, is the fastest man in history, and, alongside Muhammad Ali, the most charismatic sportsman of all. But he will say goodbye to the athletics stage he has dominated for nearly a decade in the next few days, following the London World Championships. Bolt, who will be 31 on 21st August, believes he has done enough to warrant his “superstar” status. And if Ali were “The Greatest”, then Bolt must also be in the world’s smallest club: membership? Just two! The multi-award sprinter has smashed world records, and has won nine gold medals as a reigning champion at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Olympics. And even the final relay gold was taken from him because a team-mate failed a dope test, it is an astonishing feat

which, surely, will never be equalled. The Jamaican torpedo is a once-in-a-lifetime champion who positively radiates with life wherever he goes. And this weekend, at what will be a tearful-but-joyous London Stadium, he will take his leave of the sport, which has consumed him throughout his adult life. Usain Bolt, born in Jamaica on 21st August 1986, was a stand-out cricketer and sprinter early on. His natural speed was noticed by school coaches and he began to focus solely on sprinting, under the tutelage of former Olympic sprinter Pablo McNeil (Glen Mills would later serve as Bolt’s coach and mentor.) Even at 14, Bolt was wowing sprint fans with his lightning speed, and he won his first high-school championship medal in 2001, taking

silver in the 200m. At 15, Usain took his first shot at success on the world stage at the 2002 World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, where he won the 200m to become the youngest world-junior, goldmedallist ever. Bolt’s feats impressed the athletics world. He received the International Association of Athletics Foundation’s Rising Star Award that year, and was soon given the apt nickname “Lightning Bolt”. Despite a nagging hamstring injury, Bolt ran at the 2004 Athens Olympics and was eliminated in the first round of the 200m. He reached the world Top5 rankings in 2005 and 2006, but he was hounded by injuries. A year later, he broke the national 200m record held for over 30 years by the

dazzling Donald Quarrie, and earned two silver medals at the World Championship in Osaka, Japan. These medals boosted Bolt’s desire for more, and his ambition and talent soon soared. He ran the 100m and 200m at the 2008 Beijing, breaking the world record in the 100m final in 9.69secs, yet he visibly slowed down to celebrate before he finished - and his shoelace was untied! Needless to say, he went on to win three gold medals and break three world records in Beijing. At the 2012 Olympics, held in London, Bolt won his fourth Olympic gold medal in the 100m and he claimed another two golds in the 200m and relay. He was the first man to win both the 100m and 200m in successive and consecutive Olympics, as well as the first

man to win treble gold in the sprints. Bolt’s accomplishments have made him the first man in history to set three world records in a single Olympic Games competition. Usain returned to Olympic glory at the 2016 Olympics when he won gold in the 100m and told reporters: “This is why I came here, to prove to the world that I’m the best – again!” He continued his winning streak, with gold in the 200m, asking BBC Sport: “What else can I do to prove I am the greatest?” And he remained undefeated in what was the last race of his Olympic career, the 4x100m relay, which gave him the “triple-triple”. Who would begrudge this remarkably-talented showman? Now for his grand finale, in London.

Tezza trumps deadly Dale ANOTHER fantastic Friday saw many close games, excellent darts, and a brilliant atmosphere at all venues.

According to the Irish, Sundowners was the place to be with Palms Pool Bar crossing the road and sharing the points by taking the trebles. Dale starred for the visitors with a 113 checkout. But he was trumped by Tezza, from Gaffers, as they entertained a fourman Spear Chuckers side. The home boy checked out on 114, and Gaffers then stole the trebles for a 5-3 win and top spot in the league. The Pub, missing manflu victim Grizzly, suffered their first loss of the season as Phoenix Bar snatched the last game and the match 5-3. The visitors again had Mitch in fine form with another 180 to add to his collection. A close encounter was played out at the Wa-

terfall, where Alan and Lynn, from the Tavern A team, helped heap misery on an unfortunate home team as they hit double after double the first time of asking, to ensure their initial win of the campaign. Picasso’s also recorded their first win when they emerged 5-3 winners in the 701 game, to frustrate an unlucky Emerald Lounge, from San Blas top square. Star of the night in Bar 180 was Kill Bill, who, like a good Rioja, gets better with age. He hit some superb scores and finished with aplomb. Despite losing the first two singles, Fluffy’s Playboys upped their game and won the next six. In Division 2, Lady Macs hosted Legends, but their 7-1 defeat did not reflect the close games. And the home team, who threw well all night, were grateful for the help and confidence given by the more experienced Legends. Nutty Nauta lost 6-2 to a rampant Sandys, who are matching Legends point for point at the

Phew! Neymar’s on his way, for £200m NEYMAR’S breathtaking £200-millionplus move to Paris Saint-Germain - via a release clause - was not a given because, it has been claimed, Manchester United big-wigs negotiated the same deal last summer. French newspaper L’Equipe is admant that Barcelona’s Brazilian star had agreed personal terms with Old Trafford, only for the move to break down at the last minute. United, long-term admirers of the 25-year-old striker, now the most expensive footballer by miles, first held talks with his representatives in 2015, as revealed by The Sun.

The Premier League giants were certain he was ready to step out of Lionel Messi’s shadow at Barcelona last year and become the main man. Now, though, PSG appear to have secured

the sensational deal, with Neymar telling his team-mates he was on his way yesterday (Thursday). The Parisians gave Barcelona no choice but to accept after triggering the superstar’s

mind-blowing release clause. And Neymar has finally decided he is ready to move on after years of learning from Messi, the all-timegreat. And with PSG, who came close to knocking Barca out of Europe this year, he will have a brilliant platform to launch an assault on football’s mostcoveted individual prize, the Ballon d’Or. To make things easier for him, playing for the Ligue 1 club has the added advantage of a less-gruelling, domestic schedule, with the World Cup on the horizon. Brazil will have their work cut out to lift the trophy on European soil, but they know

their talisman is capable of leading them to glory. Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp has expressed criticism of Neymar’s anticipated move, saying he hoped such deals would stay “an exception” in football. After his team’s defeat in the Audi Cup Final, a pre-season tournament in Munich, the German said there were only two or three clubs in the world who could afford a transfer fee of that size. “I always thought ‘Financial Fair Play’ was invented so that things like this don’t happen,” Klopp told reporters, referring to financial-performance regulations introduced six years ago by Uefa, Europe’s football

governing body. “But, obviously, ‘Financial Fair Play’ is more of a suggestion rather than an actual rule. I don’t know… I don’t understand it!” Klopp said. Yet Uefa told The Telegraph that Financial Fair Play regulations would be enforced in the case of the Neymar transfer, and that clubs were not permitted to make losses in excess of £50m over three years. The regulations were put in place so that European football clubs don’t spend more than they earn. “This is not the next step,” Klopp told reporters. “I believe and hope that this will remain an exception, but who knows.”
