35 people trapped as cable car fails again
TEIDE’S cable car was hit by problems again last week, leaving 35 sightseers suspended in a cabin, and differing explanations from the company running the system. Initially, the firm blamed “weather conditions”, and technicians said they had to activate the back-up engine. Continued on Page 3

New cable-car failure Continued from Front “There were delays as this back-up engine is slower” said the company, via Twitter. But this response, to a frightening situation, enraged one of the trapped people. He replied: “Weather conditions? We were told it was an electrical issue. We were stuck in the cabin for ages until they came and helped us down.” The company later backtracked and admitted there was an electrical failure, cable-car technician Luis Pintor adding that the power supply had been cut. A decision was taken to restart the cable car with its back-up diesel engine, while the entire electrical installation
was checked out. The technician added: “This engine runs the cable car at half-speed and takes about 10 minutes to start working.” A few minutes later, Mr Pintor reassured the trapped group that the electrical problem had been solved and that the cable car was fully functional again. That, at least, was a huge relief for those aboard, some of whom may well have remembered the last time a cable car broke down on Teide, on 27th March last year. Then, in freezing conditions, 70 people had to be lowered 30 metres from the suspended cabins, via the “evacuation system”.
This comprised a clamping system and rope, with assistance from firemen and Guardia Civil officers. Both cable cars were full when they came to a halt, and, at first, some 256 people were isolated between them and the station at the top of Teide. An “important rescue operation” was mounted to recover all those trapped, with numerous emergency resources ensuring the safety of everyone affected. A total of 111 people occupied three shelters overnight on Teide’s summit, accompanied by security professionals. In addition, a group of 52 adults and three minors were stranded at the
summit’s cable-car station, while another 40, mostly with reduced mobility, spent the night in the Altavista Refuge with medical staff. And another 16 people, including five minors, stayed in the concrete shed under the cable cars’ Tower 2. The shelters were able to provide dinner and breakfast, according to Nazaret Díaz, general director of Emergency and Security. All the people evacuated from the cable car, which was heading up, descended to its base station. Those rescued from the other cable car were split into two groups, with some ascending 800m to the summit station and the
others dropping to the base station. Each person came down at his or her own pace because of the rough terrain. And there was more drama for many because night fell during their descent, as did the temperature, to nearly zero degrees. But with no torches, they utilised their mobile phones to light the way. Fortunately, three helicopters were able to carry most of the 111 tourists, who spent the night at high altitude, back down the mountain, despite the poor weather. Many of them had been airlifted by midday, while a small group walked down from Teide, accompanied by rescue workers.
micro-algae is Mighty oak kills 13 church-goers TRAGEDY struck purely natural outside a church in THE huge proliferation of trichodesmium, better known as the infamous microalgae, on some of the islands’ beaches, especially in Tenerife, is a natural phenomenon. That’s the message from the Canarian Government’s Public Health Department. And, insist officials, it has nothing to do with the existence of sewage spills, or the poor treatment of the sewage water, as has been suggested. Their appearances are a natural phenomenon, sparked by high temperatures heating the ocean, the calm tides and, above all, the calima. These factors generate the ideal situation and the food (phosphorus and iron) necessary for cyanobacteria (microalgae) to bloom and take
over the Canarian coasts. And, we are informed by experts, we’ll just have to get used to it! Public Health Director José Juan Aleman points out that the islands’ health system has not seen an increase in skin conditions since the appearance of the micro-algae. And Emilio Soler, a taxonomist (who identifies and classifies organisms), and expert from the Spanish bank of algae, said that cyanobacteria are not included in UNESCO’s list of toxic, micro-algae species. Rogelio Herrera, PHD in marine science and technician in the Department of Biodiversity of the Ministry of Environmental Sciences, said that if the bloom were caused by a waste-water problem, there would be outbreaks of skin conditions every summer, in the same places of the archipelago coasts.
Madeira, Portugal, when an enormous tree toppled over, killing 13 people during Tuesday’s Roman Catholic feast day. A 12-month-old baby and a two-year-old French toddler were among the eight females and five men dead, with 49 others injured. Scores of people were gathered in a leafy square, celebrating Holy Mass, when the 200-year-old oak tree, on a slope above the square, came crashing down as the choir sang. The victims had been among the worshippers, honouring Our Lady of the Mountain in a village near the island’s main city of Funchal. Local people told Portuguese media that they had warned officials of the tree’s danger. But Funchal City Council denied receiving a notice about an unsafe tree. Sixteen of the injured people
remain in hospital, with seven in a serious condition. The annual festival was held in honour of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, when Catholics celebrate the raising of the body of Jesus Christ’s mother into heaven. It is one of six Catholic holy days of obligation, when people are expected to attend church services. Portugal’s President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his condolences for the victims, and said he would be visiting the island.
“I will go to Funchal to learn more about what has happened, and, of course, to bring words of encouragement and comfort to those who have lost their loved ones,” he said. Miguel Albuquerque, head of Madeira’s regional government, declared three days of mourning for the victims. Madeira, a popular tourist destination, is dubbed the “pearl of the Atlantic”, and is the largest of several Portuguese islands in the North Atlantic.

Spain’s in danger of new migrant deluge MORE than 600 people were rescued in the waters around the Straits of Gibraltar, and the western edge of the Mediterranean, in under 12 hours on Wednesday. It’s a record for a single day this year, and Spanish authorities are now bracing themselves for the arrival of greater numbers of migrants arriving on their shores. The arrivals’ total, which has been increasing steadily over the last year, continues to rise throughout summer. After several days of wind from the east, which delayed the rickety fishing boats and dinghies used by migrants, some 15 such vessels, adrift in Spanish waters on Wednesday, were rescued by the authorities. The decision by Spain to close its land-crossing with Morocco at the enclave of Ceuta has almost certainly prompted the recent spike in numbers. By last night (Thursday), the number of sea-going migrants to reach Spain had risen to 7,547, from a total of 10,751. The latter number had reached Spanish territory by alternative means, mainly by crossing the borders at Ceuta and Melilla, in Morocco. This
was a 104.2% increase on the same period in 2016. In a report published earlier this week, Frontex, the EU’s border agency, said 2,300 migrants arrived in Spain last month, which was more than four times as many as a year earlier. It added that arrivals in Spain over the first seven months were “around 11,000, already exceeding the number for all of 2016”. For now, though, the

numbers are set to fall far short of the 39,180 migrants who arrived in Spain in 2006. Spain’s Maritime Rescue, along with Civil Guard units, the Red Cross and other emergency services, began their rescue work in the early hours of Wednesday morning, co-ordinated from the small Cadiz town of Tarifa, and were kept busy until past midday. Further east along the

Mediterranean coast, more than 160 migrants were picked up off the coast of Almería. Ana Rosado, of the local NGO Pro-Human Rights Andalusia, confirmed that the 600 people rescued on Wednesday amounted to the highest number so far this year. “They are looking for ways to arrive,” said Rosado. “And when one route is shut, as has happened with the
closure of the Ceuta border, then pressure increases on another.” She also pointed out that many of the boats which arrived on Wednesday were wooden fishing vessels. “These are usually cases of people who, between them, have bought the boat, rather than having paid the criminal gangs who make a living shipping people into Spanish waters,” she added.
Fake-passport man held
A WOMAN, aged 52, died on Wednesday night after her car fell on to El Socorro beach, in Los Realejos, from the top of the access road. Another person was also injured.
A FIRE-ENGINE, heading to extinguish a blaze in the Calle Albeniz district of Santa Cruz, overturned en route and ended up on its side. All the water it was carrying spilled on to the road, and a small amount of petrol, which also leaked out, was later cleared. Firefighters on the vehicle were treated on the spot and, fortunately, there were no serious injuries.
The incident happened just minutes before the open-air cinema session started, on the town’s coast. Emergency services evacuated the area to treat the woman, from La Laguna, but paramedics could only confirm her death.
AN Iranian man, aged 56, was arrested by National Police at Tenerife South Airport for travelling with a fake Greek passport and identity card. He was detected on his way to an outbound flight to the UK, when police discovered that he was really Iranian and had paid a large sum of money in exchange for the false documentation.

Crew saved by helicopters as British ship catches fire A BRITISH ship’s crew were airlifted to safety by Spanish coastguard helicopters last Monday after a huge blaze broke out in the cargo hold, off Gran Canaria. Some 24 people were evacuated from MV Cheshire, which was carrying fertiliser, as it was passing the island.
They were winched to safety following a sharp rise in the temperature level of the ammonium nitrate on board, which made it dangerous for the sailors to remain because of the toxic gases released. It continued to give off thick plumes of white smoke as experts from Gibraltar and Holland prepared to board the vessel to study ways of tackling the problem. The vessel, owned by Bibby Line Limited, which has offices in Liverpool and
London, was on its way from Norway to Thailand when the alert was sounded. It should have stopped, briefly, at Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas port on Sunday, but was eventually steered away from the island. The crew members, Ukrainians, Russians and Filipinos, were said on Wednesday to be “well and in a good condition”. A Bibby Line Limited spokesman said the vessel had reached a safe position, 45 miles south of Gran Canaria on Sunday, after the “thermal decomposition” of the ammonium nitrate, and that local authorities were offering assistance. The company said in a statement: “The crew of Cheshire have been evacuated and taken ashore for their own safety because wind conditions were so light that the fumes were not being carried away from the ship. “A stand-by tug from the Spanish Maritime Safety Agency is staying with the vessel, and an access ladder has been rigged.”
Consumer office has most of the answers ADEJE’S official consumers’ office, the OMIC, is based in the modern building beside the town’s main post office and health centre. And it is open between 9am-1pm, MondayFriday, throughout the summer, for viable reasons. “We are aware that this is an important, free service for consumers,” said Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, in charge of the operation. “And we are working to resolve conflicts which arise between consumers and businesses. Our primary goal is to find a workable solution.” Since the offices opened 26 years ago, staff have dealt with over 20,000 incidents. They also inform the public how to avoid potential pitfalls when
shopping, such as reading all the small print before purchasing, and confirming that an item is in perfect working order. Shoppers should also find it fit for purpose, without defects, and check the conditions of purchase, comparing prices if possible and asking for all the relevant information needed before buying. Last year, the consumers’ office registered some 1,000 reports, with 204 of them relating to mobile phones. There were 62 complaints about banks, followed by issues regarding electro-
domestic appliances, airlines, car-repairs, health, restaurants and hotels and repairs in the home. In addition, there were complaints about clothes and shoe purchases and new-car acquisitions, plus food and furniture issues. During 2016, the Adeje office also worked, successfully, to return 227,821 euros to consumers following a variety of follow-up investigations. In addition, the office works directly with other private and public bodies for the welfare and protection of consumers.

Euro ‘exchange’ shock for expats and tourists THE euro will be worth more than the British pound by the end of the first 2018 quarter, according to analysts at global, financial- services company Morgan Stanley. And, in its latest FX Overview paper, the firm argues that a stronger euro and a weakening pound will combine to make the euro more valuable than the pound for the first time since its introduction, on 1st January 1999. That would make it, in terms of pure value, the strongest major currency, which comes as a huge financial blow to British expats and holiday-makers in Spain (including Tenerife), and other EU countries, who, for the most part, have banked on getting plenty of extra euros for their pound. But the euro has been moving up this year as investors note the improving fortunes of the bloc’s economy. Countries like Spain and France have helped it recover to its best levels since the eurozone debt crisis.
Forecasts suggest the euro will continue to strengthen and will move “beyond parity” with the pound during the first three months of 2018, hitting a peak of £1.02 before weakening a little as the year progresses. Morgan Stanley experts predict that, by 2019, one euro will be worth £0.91. “We expect the euro to stay strong, as pension funds and insurance companies (such as those in Switzerland and Japan) start to increase their net EU currency exposure from historically-low levels,” they write. “GBP is likely to weaken in its own right, driven by weak economic performance and increasing political risks. “Last year, the British
economy maintained its growth momentum, even after the Brexit vote, but the structure of growth has changed. “The household sector has increased spending, funded primarily by unsecured lending, which is unsustainable. “A consolidation of the household balance sheet, coupled with negative ‘real wage’ growth, may reduce consumption, which has been propping up growth so far. The Morgan Stanley experts added: “Brexit uncertainty may also weigh on business investment, which will weaken the already lack-lustre, productivitygrowth outlook, suggesting that ‘real rates’ will stay low.”
Canarian drownings rise
A TOTAL of 47 people drowned in the Canary Islands between 1st January15th August, which was 13.9 % more than in the same 2016 period, according to data from Spain’s Rescue and First Aid Federation. Throughout Spain, there have been 339 registered drownings, 43 people more than in 2016, with more than 400 people rescued from swimming situations, and 48 people killed in accidents involving water.
400kg drug haul seized by agents
Daytime mugging LANZAROTE’s Guardia Civil agents have prevented 400kg of cocaine from being landed on the island. The Guardia Civil have arrested a 21-year-old man from Guía de Isora, for an alleged mugging with violence. He attacked a woman on a Playa San Juan street at 9am, and threw her to the ground. After a struggle, he stole her bag containing a few euros, as well as a small radio and a watch. The Guardia, helped by witnesses and the woman’s description, were able to identify and arrest the man, who will appear before Arona magistrates.

It had changed course, suddenly, to the fishing harbour, where the Guardia surprised three men unloading packages of drugs. They arresting two of them, one of foreign nationality and the other Spanish, both residents of the Tinajo municipality. Three strikes and your out! GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested an 18-year-old youth, believed to have committed three robberies in Icod de los Vinos. The first offence occurred at La Guancha hotel, where he broke a door lock to steal a cash register containing 200 euros. In the second robbery, he broke into an Icod house and stole 150 euros. His third crime was to force open a rental car and take two cameras, a wallet and several clothes.
Teide airlift for woman

She was taken to the North Airport, where paramedics assessed the damage to her leg and transferred her to Candelaria Hospital for further medical treatment.
SPENDING by tourists in Spain during the first half of 2017 added up to 37.22 billion euros, a 14.8% rise on the same period last year, according to the Tourist Spending Survey, prepared by the National Statistics Institute. The UK is the top spender
with 7.55bn euros, (20.3% of the total), followed by Germany, with 5.36bn (14.4%), and the Nordic countries, with 3.23bn (8.7%). Average spending per tourist is 1,065 euros, which is up 2.9% on last year, while average daily spending has risen to 143 euros (+4.9%).
Catalonia received the highest level of spending, 8.18bn euros, which was up 14.8% against the first half of 2016 and accounted for 22% of the total. The Canary Islands received 7.91bn euros of all spending, up 13%, and 21.2% of the total, followed by Andalucia, with 5.61
billion, up 12.3% and 15.1% of the total. The other main destinations also posted rises. Tourist regions with the largest share of spending in June were the Balearic Islands, 2.13bn euros (23.7% of the total), Catalonia, 2.12bn (23.6%) and Andalucia 1.33bn (14.8%).
World-beating tourism SPAIN is still regarded as having the most competitive tourism sector in the world, having retained its top ranking in the biennial contest. The World Economic Forum’s Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report, which covers 136 economies, puts Spain ahead of France and Germany, with Japan, the UK and US, Australia, Italy, Canada and Switzerland also listed. The report, published every two years, highlights Spain’s good infrastructure, high security levels and
rich, cultural resources. Its low point was the business environment. It says: “Spain’s success can be attributed to its unique offer of both cultural and natural resources, combined with a sound tourism service infrastructure, airtransport connectivity and strong policy support.” Spain has also “benefited from the recent ease of its fiscal policy, and by the redirected tourism from Middle East and parts of Western Europe, affected by security concerns.” The country has climbed the tourism- competitiveness ladder quickly: in 2011 it ranked 8th; by 2013 it was 4th, and in 2015 it won the world title.
The in-depth report analyses 14 key areas, split into four categories: Enabling Environment, Travel and Tourism Enabling Conditions, Infrastructure, and Natural and Cultural Resources. And though Spain did not top-score in any of the areas, it secured a high grade in all of them, averaging 5.4, compared with 5.31 in 2015. Of the 14 areas, its lowest score was awarded for price competitiveness, but this was not necessarily a bad thing. It simply means that Spain is not the cheapest destination in the world, and it was topped by countries like Iran, Egypt, Malaysia and Algeria.
Another low score was for the country’s business environment, which analyses the difficulties of starting businesses, as well as investing and hiring workers. “The business environment can be improved, as dealing with construction permits remains burdensome, and there is room to increase international openness further,” warns the report. The section winner was Hong Kong, followed by Singapore, Switzerland and the UK. The report also notes that Spain’s air infrastructure is among the world’s top nine, but it suggested that “upgrades and modernisations are expected.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Driver’s lucky escape
A DRIVER, aged 60, who fainted during the intense heat while motoring along the North Motorway (TF-5), around the Los Realejos area, crashed into side-barriers. The Guardia Civil’s quick intervention prevented any further accidents, despite cars whizzing past. The incident took place last Thursday afternoon, when the man lost consciousness at the Km18 junction, heading towards Puerto de la Cruz. As soon as he noticed the first symptoms, he slowed down. And, by the time he had passed out, the car was travelling at a moderate speed when it crashed. Fortunately, two Guardia Civil Trafico officers were on the spot immediately, guiding the oncoming traffic and assisting the hapless driver, who was still unconscious. But the only ambulance available in the area took more than 15 minutes to arrive from La Laguna. However, paramedics soon transferred the victim to a health centre, where he made a full recovery.
Eggs given thumbs-up
THERE are no contaminated eggs being sold in Spain, says the national health board (Aecosan), following the European Food Alert System (Rasff) warning that it has detected traces of the banned pesticide fipronil in eggs from the Netherlands. Fipronil, which can cause damage to people’s kidneys, livers and thyroid glands, has been found in batches in the UK, Germany and France, among other EU countries. But we are safe here!
Dealer carried 6kg of hash
A SEASONED criminal, with more than 20 offences logged by police, was arrested in La Laguna in possession of more than 6kg of hashish, with a street value of more than 38,000 euros. He was stopped at a National Police check-point, where officers searched his vehicle and found drugs hidden in the glove compartment and in a sports bag. He was arrested and taken to the National Police station. Once the police report was processed, he appeared in court and was imprisoned immediately.
Home fire attracts police
A BLAZING apartment in San Eugenio, which spread over two floors, was saved by San Miguel firefighters. The property was then ventilated to clear the smoke. Local and National Police, who were also at the scene, took statements from witnesses.
Jet2 soaring high LOW-COST airline Jet2.com should account for almost 50% of the flight growth between Spain and the UK this summer, according to international aviation website anna.aero. The Leeds Bradford-based company’s 31 new routes (111 in total this summer), more weekly flights (over 550 per week at peak times), and more seats (over 5.1m seats on sale) make it the
third-biggest operator between Spain and the UK during the summer months. And the opening of two new bases, at Stansted and Birmingham airports, also adds to its growth in Spain, where its three busiest airports are Tenerife South, Palma (Majorca) and Alicante. The success of Jet2holidays is driving significant growth at all three, and, overall, across Spain, with almost 1,400 hotels now contracted directly across the mainland and its islands. Steve Heapy, chief of Jet2.
com and Jet2holidays, said: “The addition of more flights and seats, as well as brandnew routes this summer, really demonstrates our commitment to Spain. “With great-value, package holidays through Jet2holidays, we are driving demand amongst British tourists, who continue to see Spain as their preferred holiday choice. He added: “We are seeing more new customers enjoying our award-winning, holiday-package service, from their local airport to Spain.”
Airbnb risks huge fines as Tourist Law kicks in RENTAL accommodation websites such as Airbnb are still displaying more than 45,000 adverts for unlicensed flats, it has been revealed.
It comes on the week the government of the Balearic Islands gave the online rental platforms a 15-day ultimatum to comply with its new Tourist Law. Companies such as Homeaway and Airbnb had a fortnight to ensure there were no unlicensed properties advertised on their websites. Should they ignore the warnings, the penalties will be stiff: firms still advertising unlicensed apartments face a maximum 400,000euro fine. And owners face a maximum fine of 40,000 euros, with a one-year ban on new licences also being issued. An Airbnb spokesperson told the Olive Press: “Airbnb helps to create sustainable tourism that benefits locals and communities. “The new legislation of the Balearic Islands is confusing
and doesn’t differentiate between local families who share their homes, and professional operations. “We have worked with more than 300 governments from all over the world, and we continue encouraging local legislators to follow the example of other big cities, which have implemented simple, clear laws for homesharing.”
A cap of 623,624 tourist beds has been placed on the entire Balearic Islands, with the government looking to trim that figure by 120,000. Holiday-makers visiting the Balearics could see the cost of their breaks increase following the new rules, with tourists being forced to book into hotels, which will, obviously, be an extra drain on their holiday spending.

Stolen-car gang right out of luck
SPAIN’S Guardia Civil, along with police colleagues from Austria, France and Portugal, have smashed a gang who were transporting stolen cars, from the mainland to North Africa, from all over Europe. High and medium-range
vehicles were targeted, even for the spare-parts market. So far, 12 people have been arrested in a special, simultaneous operation in the ports of Algeciras, Alicante, Almeria, Barcelona, Malaga, Motril, Tarifa and Valencia. In all, 43 vehicles (33 of them completely dismantled), which were stolen in Italy, France, Germany and Sweden, have been recovered as a result of the Guardia operation, which snared 12 people of Mo-
roccan, Algerian, French and Dutch nationalities. The arrests come as part of the regular “Operation Crossing The Straits” investigations. They are staged every year to manage the large influx of people and vehicles during the summer, coming from all over Europe to cross from Spain to North Africa. So far this year, Guardia Civil officers have recovered more than 17,600 stolen vehicles.

Police too smart for Russian crime boss
A JOINT operation between Spain’s National Police, the Guardia Civil and the police in Estonia has led to the capture of the head of the Russian organised crime group Kemerovo. Raids were carried out simultaneously in Mijas (Málaga) and in Tallín (Estonia), where three other leaders of the largest Russian criminal organisation dedicated to drug trafficking were also arrested. Heavily-armed police raided the home of its chief of staff in Mijas, and found
a stash of hidden cash and computer equipment, pending analysis, as well as an axe and a large knife, hidden by the main man under his pillow. The other three leaders of the criminal group were arrested in Estonia, including the group’s deputy leader, a martialarts expert who recruited the “soldiers” of Kemerovo in the gymnasium he ran. The Estonian authorities had been investigating the criminal gang’s illegal activities for more than two years. The operation took on a new dimension following the assassination, in September 2016, of one of Estonia’s top mafia bosses, following a dispute between rival criminal gangs.

Non-resident? You can still buy property here BUYING a property in Spain for non-residents, including those in Tenerife and the other Canary Islands, can be difficult. But it is not impossible. While some Spanish banks won’t lend money to people living abroad, whether Spaniards or nonnationals, others will. But it is important to know the ins and outs when borrowing, to avoid unpleasant surprises. You’ll have to pay more To begin with, Spaniards living abroad, and non-resident expats, will pay higher interest rates than they would if they were resident here. A fixed-rate mortgage, the usual option, “is around 2.5% for 20 years,” says Ricardo
Gulias, director of financial intermediaries Tu Solución Hipotecaria. With a variable rate, the fixed part added
to the Euribor index “is between 1.1% and 1.25%.” Gulias adds that buyers will have to take out home insurance.
Santiago Cruz del Pozo, of mortgage advisers Ibercredit, says: “The reason non-residents pay higher interest rates is usually because they are buying a second home and will find it harder to meet some conditions, which could reduce costs. “These include having a bank-associated life insurance, or one’s salary paid into the bank.” You’ll have a 20-year, fixed-rate mortgage Fixed-rate mortgages are the most common for buyers living abroad. “It’s the most common system outside Spain, and banks prefer to give fixed rates so that the amount the purchaser repays is steady,” says Gulias. This is one way to offset uncertainty and reduce risk down the road. “The usual maximum repayment period for non-residents is 20 years, while residents can extend it to up to 40 years,” he adds. You’ll be lent less money As a rule, a mortgage should not be more than 80% of the property’s value, but residents in Spain are often able to borrow up to 100%. In the case of non-residents, the figure tends to fall to
around 60%. This is because, in the event of nonrepayment, the bank’s only guarantee is the property itself. But Gulias says that this tends to apply to foreigners, while Spanish expats, particularly those with family connections in Spain, can often secure 100% financing. You must provide a credit rating Aside from an employment contract, salary pay-roll, tax return and job record, non-residents are usually required to provide a credit rating from their country of origin or residency. These are provided by SCHUFA, in Germany, Experian in the UK, Transunion in the US and Transunion CRIF in Russia. The origin of any money the buyer puts in has to be accounted for as part of efforts to combat money-laundering. You’ll have to translate all documentation
Not only will any paperwork from outside Spain have to be translated, some banks also require the Hague Apostille, an international authentication comparable to a notarisation in domestic law. This can be sent by email to the bank for confirmation, but the contract must be signed by the interested party, or by a legal proxy. If you’re a non-resident foreigner, you should request a NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) at a police station or in a Spanish embassy or consulate. You’ll pay 3% tax when you sell the property Taking out a mortgage in Spain “does not confer residency,” warns Gulias, meaning that non-residents will be subject to the same legislation as Spaniards. But, he says: “They will have to declare the property bought in Spain on their tax return at home.” Non-residents should also be aware that when they sell their property, they will have to pay a municipal tax, as well as 3% of the value to the Spanish Tax Office. The obstacles foreigners face If you are a non-resident foreigner in Spain, you should know that “Spanish banks prefer the United States and EU members,” says Santiago Cruz del Pozo, adding: “It’s still possible for banks to work with people from other countries.” And Gulias points out: “Banks have begun specialising in operations with people from the north and east of Europe, and China.”

10,000-euro tools’ theft
TWO Valle San Lorenzo residents have been arrested for stealing tools and machinery, valued at around 10,000 euros, from a van owned by a small, local carpentry company.
The robbery took place at around 3am and the Guardia Civil began a quick, efficient investigation to try to recover the stolen items before they were sold. By one o’clock in the afternoon, enough evidence had been gathered to identify the suspects. Guardia officers, along with the Local Police, went to their residence, just metres
away from where the van had been parked. And, after questioning, the suspects admitted to the robbery voluntarily and agreed that the officers could enter the property and retrieve all the stolen items, which were later returned to their owner. The men, together with the investigation report, were handed over to Arona Courts.

LOCAL Police were last week hunting for the owner of a lost goat, found by a resident on Calle Obispo Cáceres in San Isidro. The animal had obviously escaped from a nearby farm, and police found it roaming around. A neighbour offered to look after the goat until the owner claimed it.

Princely theft of gems, worth 1m
POLICE are investigating the theft of jewellery, worth more than one million euros, from a Saudi prince’s rented villa in Marbella. Sources say a deposit box was snatched from the luxury pad as the Arab prince and diplomat was dining with his family at a Puerto Banus restaurant. They returned to find the living-room door open, while
a safe had disappeared from one room. But officers found no apparent signs of forced entry to the villa. The complaint, by the prince’s daughter, detailed the missing items, valuing them at more than one million euros. The haul includes four rings with diamonds, two pendants and a ring with the Bulgari signature, a Chopard watch with diamonds, four Cartier rings, four diamondencrusted bracelets, 20 gold earrings, an iPad and two mobile iPhones.
The answer to an age-old problem?
THE world’s first anti-ageing drug, which goes on trial this year, could enable people to live well past the century mark. The drug, based on metformin and used to treat diabetes, has been proven to extend the life of animals. And it has been given the green light by the US Food and Drug administration. Professor Gordon Lithgow, a Scottish ageing expert, attached to California’s Buck Institute for Research on Ageing, said: “If you target an ageing process and you slow down ageing,
then you slow down all the diseases and pathology of ageing as well. “I have been doing research into ageing for 25 years, and the idea that we would now be talking about a clinical trial in humans for an antiageing drug would have been thought inconceivable.” If successful, the drug will mean that a person in his/her seventies would, biologically, be as healthy as a 50-year-old. Experts say it could usher in a new era of “geroscience”, in which doctors would no longer fight individual conditions, such as cancer, diabetes and dementia. Instead, they would treat ageing as the underlying cause.
It’s full speed ahead for drug-boat deals IT can’t be easy to keep control of a speedboat travelling at around 110km/h… with up to 1,200kg of hashish on board!
Yet having the courage and the recklessness to shrug off a police chase, without ditching the cargo overboard, means that these dare-devil pilots are made of stern stuff. And that toughness is rewarded handsomely because the boatmen, working for drug-trafficking gangs based in the Campo de Gibraltar area, in the south of Spain, are paid as much as 60,000 euros per load. But these kamikaze pilots, the most-valued and bestpaid, are not the only people hired by the Cádiz-based gangs, who also dish out a minimum of 1,000 euros to each of their “employees”. Miguel Gil, head of the Algeciras Customs surveillance unit, said: “They work in a network that’s perfectly hierarchical.” Francisco Mena, coordinator of the Nexos federation of counternarcotics associations, describes these gangs as being like “a commercial company, able to create jobs and a ‘narco-economy’.” And the “field work” in these crime corporations always begins at sea. Together with the sought-af-
ter boatmen, two or three crew members are usually on board. “They take care of the fuel, watch over the millions of euros of merchandise they are carrying, and they’re using radar and sonar,” said Guardia Civil officer José Encinas. Mena added: “For their trouble, they can expect to be paid between 3,000-5,000 euros.” Meanwhile, on land, the network is even bigger. The look-outs, on the lowest rung, are paid 1,000 euros a day, just for warning if there are any police around. “Proving that they are involved in a drug haul is very complicated, given that their involvement is minor,” said Encinas. “Then come the longshoremen, who get up to 3,000 euros for unloading the hashish when it arrives on the coast. “They have little more than two minutes to get the drugs off the boat and load them on to the allterrain vehicles waiting for them. That’s where the drivers come in. Up to three vehicles are normally used for each load: one to clear the route, one to carry the drugs and a third available to ram police cars if need be. “They drive incredibly dangerously, almost without any respect for human life,” added Encinas.
The drivers, who pocket around 6,000 euros per trip, head for the warehouses or properties in which the drugs are stashed, before the packages begin their journey to the rest of Europe. “The guards in charge of protecting these locations are paid differing amounts, according to the amount of drugs they are taking care of, and for how long,” said Mena. Some of the heads of these gangs are well-known, such as Iván Odero, nicknamed “El Niño,” or Abdellah, known as “El Messi.” Some have been arrested, while others are still wanted by the authorities. They usually work as “subcontracted employees for Moroccans, who rely on them to move the drugs,” said Miguel Gil. Between them, they share out the spoils from a business in which a kilo of hashish is worth between 1,400-2,000 euros. That money stays in the local economy, and creates a tolerance for the business in part of society. “In an area that has been punished by unemployment, as this one has [there is a 30% jobless rate in La Línea de la Concepción], the drug trade actually keeps the legal economy moving,” clarified Mena. “That’s the most perverse part of drugtrafficking.”

IF you are considering a business investment, you won’t go far wrong by looking at the international border-control industry. Europe spent 17bn euros on halting immigration from 2014 to 2016, according to a report by the British thinktank Overseas Development Institute (ODI). For ODI managing director Marta Foresti, the main change in strategy arising from the immigration crisis of 2015, when a million would-be refugees entered Europe, is purely down to economics. “This is true in terms of surveillance and the creation of border fences, and in terms of aid to countries of origin,” said Foresti. And, as a case in point, he admitted that the budget of European Union border agency Frontex has rocketed, from just six million euros in 2005 to 254m in 2017. And it has been predicted that the global, bordersecurity industry will be worth 50bn euros in 2022. Theodore Baird, University of Amsterdam researcher, has noted in an article that the control of European borders has become more restrictive, militarised and “deadly” since the 1990s. He writes: “A European market has grown up to support this restrictive regime, driven by a number of companies that participate in the design, production and supply of security technologies and border surveillance.” Corporate giants such as Ericsson, Airbus, German

conglomerate Siemens, Italy’s Leonardo S.p.A. (formerly Finmeccanica), and British firm G4S, as well as Spain’s Indra and Thales, don’t just provide tools and offer services to European Union states and agencies. They also participate as experts in drawing-up EU reports on the future of the security industry. The Security for Sale investigation, carried out by 22 European journalists in 11 countries, notes that security companies make 30bn euros per year in the EU, with Indra and Airbus among the top 10 recipients of European security funds. “There are different forms
of privatisation in terms of migration material, and, obviously, outsourcing is linked with budgetary concerns,” said Yves Pascoau, Director of Migration and Mobility Policies at the European Policy Centre, which is a Brussels-based think-tank. The walls that separate Spain’s North African enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla from Morocco cost 72m euros from 2005 to 2013, according to Amnesty International. “In France, for example, private firms have taken over visa-processing because the companies are faster in collecting applications, which streamlines the process,” said Pascoau.
Sub-contracting and outsourcing are common practices in the business world, but there are serious issues when it comes to applying these methods to immigration. Angolan citizen Jimmy Mubenga died in 2010 when security agents, with private firm G4S, wrestled him to the ground after he protested while boarding a British Airways flight during deportation proceedings. That tragic episode, recalled by France’s Claire Rodier in her 2013 book Xénophobie Business, exemplifies the dilemma of privatising immigration services. The cause of death of Mubenga, who, according to witnesses, suffocated,
was never established by authorities. G4S subsequently lost its security contract, but no one was disciplined, work practices were not changed, and another company took on the unpleasant but lucrative role. In Spain last year, Air Europa lost a contract in which it repatriated undocumented migrants in what were dubbed the “flights of shame”. Evelop Airlines, Orbest, and Air Nostrum went on to bid against each other to deliver the service, which also includes providing transfers of those migrants within Spain. It will be worth 11m euros over 18 months.
Olives threatened by serious plague OFFICIALS in the European Union admit they are powerless to halt a terrible plague, which is scything through Spanish crops, including almond and olive trees, as well as bushes and shrubbery. A Brussels audit claims the Xylella blight could be irreversible, and, if so, will deliver serious economic blows, especially to the olive industry. The disease has devastated large areas of Mallorca’s countryside, and the EU admits: “The eradication of Xylella will be very hard to achieve.”
Of the 351 bacteria cases reported in Spain, more than half relate to Mallorca. The holiday island’s environment department fears more almond crops will be affected in the coming weeks. The variety of affected plants, as well as the presence of the bacteria’s various strains, have complicated the battle to contain Xylella. The first Spanish outbreak, reported in Mallorca in October 2016, infected three cherry trees. The European Commission says of Xylella: “It is one of the most dangerous plant bacteria worldwide, causing a variety of diseases, with huge economic impact for agriculture, public gardens and the environment.”

IN the midst of the wave of claims for floor clauses and mortgage costs, banks are also facing another landslide of lawsuits.
The Supreme Court, following a 2015 judgement, opened the door to those affected by developers going bankrupt during the housing bubble, to recover the monies paid to purchase off-plan properties which never materialised. A 1968 Law enforces the banks to respond for failing to carry out regular checks on the developers’ work. This means that when a buyer pays sums of money on account of the purchase price into a developer’s bank account, and, finally,
18th August - 24th August 2017
Banks are facing another setback the latter does not finish the building or cannot hand over the keys, the bank is jointly responsible with the developer for breach of contract. Many analysts believe the claims for this problem may have even greater magnitude than those associated with floor clauses, and the Bank of Spain is reluctant to give details about its impact. Although there are no official statistics about the number of people affected by the purchase of properties never built, it is estimated that there are more than 600,000 cases. There are more than 500 developers and cooperatives in receivership all around Spain, which means that hundreds of thousands of families, who bought off-plan, neither have their homes; nor have their money back. In December 2015 the Supreme Court issued a judgement, urging the
banks strongly to return to the home-buyers the money they paid on account of an off-plan property through co-operatives and promoters. This judgement created a jurisprudence ruling that banks must respond to those unfortunate people who lost everything when purchasing a home. But why are banks liable for the bankruptcy of promoters? Simply because this was determined by Law 57/68, still active at the time of the December 2015 ruling, and still protecting the rights of home-buyers who bought before 1st January 2016, when this law was subject to derogation, which is a partial repeal. This 1968 Law required developers to take out an insurance, or bank guarantee, to assure the return of the amounts paid on account, in case they were not built, or were not delivered within the agreed period.
Better late than never But why now? Because of the tiredness of buyers, actually! As a matter of fact, this is not a new matter. This type of lawsuit against the banks, for joint responsibility with the developer, started in 2010/2011, and ended up with contradictory, High Courts’ judgements. Some consider the banks responsible as guarantors, while others do not. But after the December 2015 judgement, the claims have rocketed because the Supreme Court has now, undoubtedly, ruled that the banks are jointly responsible (even when they keep saying they are not). Now, the High Courts and Courts have to apply this Supreme Court doctrine. The banks in demand mostly are Caixabank (including Caja Canarias and other saving banks), BBVA and Bankia, although they consider that this problem is not important. Yet they have paid out 200
million euros for this reason. End of the crisis? Now that the real-estate crisis has ceased, the purchase of an off-plan property is again an option for many families. But to avoid risks and lawsuits, it is advisable to know the promoter and the company’s plans well; to discern whether it is advisable to invest in it; the firm’s experience in the sector; its solvency, and whether it owns of the land on which the properties are to be built. In addition, it is important to read the contract carefully and review all clauses. Keep a copy of the floor plans, set the exact price and delivery date … and always make payments through the bank! Will GBP/EUR hit parity? By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
OVER the last month, the GBP/ EUR exchange rate has steadily fallen from 1.1432 euros, to 10-month lows of 1.0969. During the same period, EUR/ GBP has advanced from £0.8747 to £0.9115. EUR/USD has also hit new, multi-year highs of $1.1885, with the US dollar faltering in the face of geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty. The pound is currently trading at 10-month lows against the euro, although the pairing is actually at its lowest rate for seven years, if you discount last year’s flash-crash. A combination of factors has been driving GBP/EUR lower, with speculation
about the future path of monetary policy in the UK and Eurozone proving particularly influential. While the euro has been supported by the belief that the European Central Bank (ECB) will begin discussing the winding down of quantitative easing in September, the pound has been pulverised by bets that the Bank of England (BoE) won’t be making any adjustments to interest rates in the near future. At the last BoE interestrate decision, the Central Bank voted 6-2 in favour of keeping rates unchanged, and slashed UK growth forecasts for 2017 and 2018, leaving GBP exchange rates
reeling. A lack of progress in Brexit negotiations has also been keeping Sterling under pressure. Morgan Stanley added to the pound’s woes by forecasting that GBP/ EUR could fall below parity (where one pound is equal to one euro) in early 2018. GBP/EUR hasn’t reached parity since the euro was introduced, although it did languish at around 1.0200 euros at the onset of the global economic crisis in 2008. Morgan Stanley commented: “GBP is likely to weaken in its own right, driven by weak economic performance, low real yields and increasing political risks.
“Last year, the British economy maintained its growth momentum even after the Brexit vote, but the structure of growth has changed. The household sector has increased spending, primarily funded by unsecured lending, which is unsustainable.” Any data which supports the argument in favour of the BoE leaving interest rates on hold, is liable to pressure Sterling lower still over the next few weeks. However, if it appears that the UK economy is recovering from the slowdown recorded in the first half of the year, GBP/ EUR may just be able to stage a modest recovery. The next BoE interestrate decision isn’t until September 14th. ECB policy speculation will also remain a key driver of GBP/EUR and EUR/GBP movement, with the prospect of the central bank tapering its quantitative easing scheme before the end of the year, lending EUR exchange rates support. As the euro also reacts to US news (gaining when the US dollar weakens, and
vice versa) Federal Reserve news and any escalation of the current tensions between the US and North Korea will be of interest, over the next couple of weeks. Astronauts: Do You Have What It Takes? Sunday 20th August, BBC2, 21.00
Read inside...
Millions dream of being an astronaut, but how many of us have what it takes? Astronaut and former Commander of the International Space Station, Chris Hadfield, former NASA medical researcher Dr Kevin Fong, and psychologist Dr Iya Whiteley, have chosen 12 exceptional applicants from thousands. From these 12, just one candidate will ultimately be selected as the winner. The person who impresses the most will receive the ultimate reference: Chris’s backing for their application when the space agencies next take on recruits. The candidates range from doctors of science to a military pilot, a surgeon, a dentist who has summited Mt Everest and a professional ballerina studying for a PhD in Physics. They all have one thing in common: their desire to find out if they are made of the ‘right stuff’ to be an astronaut. Competition is intense between these high-flyers, as those who fail to make the grade can be asked to leave the selection process at any time. Over six weeks, the candidates have remarkable access to astronaut training facilities around the world including the state-of-the-art German Space Centre, a secret facility in Sweden and the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. Using standards set by the world’s space agencies, they are put through a series of gruelling tests to find out who has the special qualities needed to be an astronaut. In week one, the 12 candidates are thrown in at the deep end. They are first challenged to hover a helicopter, with no previous experience, to test how quickly they can learn a new skill. Astronaut Chris Hadfield sets them this test as it’s one astronauts need to master and it shows the candidates just how high the bar is being set. Dr Kevin Fong then puts the candidates through a Beep Test that pushes them to their physical limits. Next, Chris runs a test for mental acuity used by space agencies to weed out candidates during their own selection processes. Psychologist Dr Iya Whitely then interviews the candidates to look for facial micro-expressions that could reveal who would be best-suited to long-term missions in space. Next, with no hospital in space every astronaut is trained in basic medicine and the candidates must face their fears by taking their own blood and, finally, they’re confined to small personal spheres as a test for claustrophobia. Not everyone meets the high standard Chris has set, but which candidates will have what it takes to get through to the next stage of the selection process?

Can they prove that a beautiful English landscape is a work of national importance - a lost masterpiece by John Constable, and quite possibly an alternative view of his greatest work The Hay Wain. Now owned by a Gloucestershire businessman, the painting appears to have all the hallmarks of Constable’s sketches - his more impressionistic, preparatory works. If genuine, it could be worth at least £2 million. There are few more iconic paintings in British art than Constable’s The Hay Wain. A picture with a direct link to this milestone in British art would be the holy grail for any collector or museum, and the picture appears to depict the very same scene, Willy Lott’s cottage on the banks of the river Stour. The trouble is, Constable is one of the most faked artists of the 19th century and the painting has a chequered past. Thirty years ago, several top Constable experts decided that it was not an authentic work. It’s a particularly personal case for presenter Philip Mould, who briefly owned the painting in the past but had to let it slip through his fingers after he failed in his attempts to prove its authenticity. Now scientific analysis techniques have moved on and neglected records can be searched more deeply online; can the latest advances and deep research into the picture’s provenance turn up enough evidence to prove that it is a genuine work by John Constable and show his original hunch to be correct? For Philip it is the one that got away. Fake or Fortune will find out once and for all if this painting was Constable’s first step on the path towards his most cherished and well-known work of art.

easyJet: Inside the Cockpit Monday 21st August, ITV1, 21.00
Last year British people took more flights than ever before, and with air travel increasing there’s now a worldwide shortage of pilots. This year easyJet, the UK’s biggest airline, launched its largest ever pilot recruitment drive including a focus on encouraging more women to apply for this career in which females currently make up only three per cent of pilots worldwide. This two-part primetime series opens the door into the cockpit to follow rookie pilots as they take their first steps from the flight school classroom into the flight simulator, and on to flying large jets with hundreds of passengers on board. This week, freshly-qualified 20-year-old Ryan Clyde lands for the first time in the dark in Paris with passengers on board - with the added complication that one of them has never flown before, and is extremely nervous. Meanwhile cadet Sophie Trunan learns how to deal with G-forces, and the firm’s training captains jet off to France to showcase their skills to seven fledgling pilots. Becoming a pilot involves dedication and determination and the trainees come from every walk of life. But does the reality live up to the dream of flying high?

No More Boys And Girls: Can Our Kids Go Gender Free? Wednesday 23rd August, BBC2, 21.00
In this concluding episode Doctor Javid heads out of the classroom to try and tackle inequalities closer to home. He explores how the toys children play with in this pink and blue world shape the skills they develop. This time Doctor Javid decides to set the parents homework to remove gendered toys, reconsider the nicknames they use, and the way chores are shared. He sets the children tasks to make a picnic or build a fire to see whether the changes in their parents’ behaviours have impacted the boys and girls’ choices. There is another significant change at school but not all the children are on board, and on the last day of term, Doctor Javid retests Mr Andre’s class to see whether the changes have altered the way the boys and girls think. Will his experiment have worked?
W C choice Off the coast of Bridlington a kayaker has been missing for an hour - and only the crews’ expert coastal knowledge can help track him down. A crew member on his first shout races to a dinghy capsize to find a man losing consciousness in the water. And when a fishing trawler sinks off the coast of the Shetland Islands, the fishermen and RNLI crew aboard must swim for their lives. Saving Lives At Sea tells the story of the volunteer lifeboat crews and lifeguards of the RNLI, who rescue thousands of people and save hundreds of lives around our coastline and on the River Thames every year.

The Brighton Police
Thursday 24th August, ITV1, 21.00
In this second episode, a family home in Woodingdean near Brighton with four young children, has been attacked by a gang of masked men, armed with knives and poles. DS Gary Tattersall, investigating, says: “Being attacked in your own bedroom by masked men at the age of seven to 12 is incredibly serious, and ultimately that will be what gives [the attackers] very harsh sentences in this case.” Detectives in Brighton have traced the incident to a woman living in Sussex whose brother is serving time in prison. After months spent analysing phone records, detectives believe the attack was masterminded from prison, and police have obtained records of the calls. Now, they need to see if they can persuade the ringleader to come out of prison so they can question him about his involvement. Meanwhile, a woman has reported an attempted stranger rape, and police are carrying out an intensive search for the attacker to ensure he does not strike again.
Ambulance
Thursday 24th August, BBC1, 21.00
Eight-part observational documentary Ambulance returns to BBC One, this time with unparalleled insight into the West Midlands Ambulance Service. Each episode follows the call-handlers and ambulance dispatchers in the highly pressurised control-room, and the paramedics, technicians and specialist Air Ambulance crews out on the ground. West Midlands Ambulance Service has to respond in minutes to more than 3,000 emergency calls every day from across a diverse region covering more than 5,000 square miles - from rural Herefordshire where the distance to a trauma hospital could be over an hour, to the busy urban centre of Birmingham. With an ageing population, out-of-hours mental health services and GP surgeries increasingly stretched, and many A&E departments overcrowded, the role of the ambulance service is changing. Episode one: 8.31pm on Saturday night, and West Midland Ambulance Service takes a call from a distraught woman whose husband has collapsed on their lounge floor. The call hander must stay cool-headed and coach the woman and her daughter over the phone in how to do CPR while ambulance crew Katie and Sarah race to help. By midnight, the impact of Saturday night drinking is beginning to show, as calls pour in to the control-room reporting numerous fights and violent attacks. Controller Glennis has to juggle her time between trying to help a crew who’ve been searching for an elderly man, who’s fallen in an alleyway, and a high-priority call for a street brawl. In an episode which begins with the life of a man in jeopardy, paramedics Natalie and Nat face an agonising decision of whether to move a woman in advanced labour, or face the risky prospect of delivering the baby at home, knowing she’s already had a stillbirth. In just two shifts, the staff of the West Midlands Service have faced life, death, and resurrection.

The heats continue with the four remaining celebrities facing three more challenges. The first challenge is a knowledge and skills test, where the celebrities have to face John Torode and Gregg Wallace one at a time and identify a tray of ingredients, three spices and three leafy vegetables before being asked to make a lamb kofta, hummus and a flatbread from scratch in just 15 minutes. The celebrities are then split into two teams and are sent out on their first mass-catering challenge, for which they have to make lunch for over 100 members of staff at the Francis Crick Institute.

Britain at Low Tide Channel 4, 19:00
Every day, on a sandy beach or a rocky foreshore, fascinating evidence of Britain’s island history appears and disappears as the tide rolls in and rolls back out again. Tori Herridge and Alex Langlands reveal stories from our extraordinary maritime, industrial and natural history. In Essex, Tori and Alex investigate the earthwork remains of a fort dating to the time when Henry VIII took England out of the European Catholic union. They pay their respects to some Thames sailing barges that are now sunk in estuary mud but which were once the glory of the east coast. And they find a First World War German U-boat stranded in a tiny creek.

The Lady’s Abscess. Caroline bags an invitation to meet her hero Charles Dickens (Andrew Scott, pictured). William finds himself in an awkward position when he exaggerates how much of a fan he is, when he hasn’t read a single page of Dickens. An excruciating evening ensues when William escorts Caroline to a dinner party at Dickens’ house. Meanwhile, John finds himself with a new protégé when he takes an orphan under his wing, and Robert meets his match when a forthright, uppity young volunteer called Florence Nightingale (Milly Thomas) arrives at the hospital and starts interfering in his work. With Dr Hendrick (Rupert Everett) keen to curry favour with Nightingale and her influential family, Robert has to work out how to get rid of her.

She is shocked to discover that Evan risked both his freedom and his reputation by following his conscience, caught up in a catch-22 situation with the authorities which was only broken when Evan took dramatic action. On her mother’s side, Fearne finds an ancestor whose extraordinary professional ambition led to an encounter with Queen Victoria but ended in career disaster.

Open your eyes!
By Carl pattison from Robot
IT’S all getting a little crazy on the hair-advertising side of things. I sit at home, reading the small print on screen, and listening to the way these companies twist and manipulate words to sell their chemicals in bottles. I hear clients telling me what they use on their hair, believing every word that is thrown at them. It’s time to wake up to what’s being put out there; there are no hair products advertised on the TV that we, as professionals, use. Our products are genuine, salon-only brands that should only be
prescribed by a stylist. Words like “will feel better” are totally different from “will be better”, the latter being a genuine statement. The biggest fraud is the phrase: “73% of testers agreed”, which means 27% didn’t like the product, but we still keep buying it. Small text at the bottom of the screen states that the promoted shampoo and conditioner have
great results, when tested against a shampoo alone. Hello? Well, of course they will, because you’re using two products against one. This type of marketing really makes our profession difficult, as we are battling with unnatural chemicals smeared onto your hair. Choose wisely, and read the ingredients content well, before you spend your money on gimmicky hair products.
Jump jump to it! By Carl Pattison YOU were told, months ago, that they were coming, and now they are being seen big-style, from catwalks to celebrity events - the jumpsuit is having its day, all over again. Once seen as being a work overall, the jumpsuit has really made its mark in the fashion halls of fame. Starting way back in the Seventies, this fashion classic has its roots, but now it has been brought right up to date, and given that glamorous touch. There are so many
shapes to this look; it’s so flattering for you slimmer girls, and for those with curves. Styles vary from denim and soft cottons for days, to silks and meshlike materials for nights. You can dress them up or tone them down - the choice is yours. Make sure you add in some killer heels to elongate your look, and never wear flats with this shape of trouser. From off-the - shoulder to hi-collars, this isn’t a fashion fad that’s going to be disappearing soon.
Home-staging
By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic
TENERIFE is bursting at the seams at the moment, and becoming more and more popular by the day. Because of this, the property market is raking in the benefits, with prices at their peak.
So, if you are selling, or even wanting to rent out your place at the moment, and wish to achieve the bestpossible price, it has to look its absolute best, in order to compete with other properties in the local area. This is where homestaging comes in. For those who aren’t familiar with it, the purpose of home-
staging is to alter the property, in order to give it an all-round look. This enables potential buyers to visualise the property as a home for themselves, making them feel as though they could move right in, without having to change too much. To do this, the main tasks to carry out are decluttering, refreshing and creating a style to suit the masses. Stagers have many tricks up their sleeves to achieve this, although you can try to do it yourself if you want to have a go; it’s not as expensive as you may think. To stage a property here, the average, all-in price can be from about 600 euros, which is a small investment when the benefits can be a quick sale, and a better asking price. The project always includes painting, with neutral colours, of course. Just the smell of fresh paint can create a feeling of cleanliness, and make
a place look brand new. You also need to do as much as you possibly can to make the rooms look spacious, achieving this with correct lighting, and keeping furniture to a minimum. The master bedroom is something really important to work on. A lot can be changed without spending too much, as would be the case in the bathroom and kitchen. Another key area is the entrance, and first impressions are crucial. If the front door is stiff, and the paint is peeling off, you are giving a negative vibe before the buyer has even got over the threshold! As a home-stager, my quotes include all the necessary work to be carried out, including professional photographs. These are a must when advertising online, and can, of course, make all the difference! For any enquiries, please contact Lili at muebles.chic25@ gmail.com or call 636 630 187.

El Paso Restaurant, Los Cristianos
An everlasting memory!
ONE of the good things about having family or friends to stay, whether in summer or winter, is that it gives you a chance to build new memories and new experiences together. You can also visit places you have always wanted to see, but never get round to doing so. And this summer has been no exception. We have visited lots of new places and several new restaurants, some in town, and some far afield. But the restaurant I want to talk about is one we have been meaning to try for some time, and, finally, we have! My only disappointment was that I just wish we’d gone sooner. There were three of us dining at El Paso, on the outskirts of Los Cristianos,
just behind Castle Harbour. The first thing that pleased us - well, me to be truthful - was the ample parking space… no driving around for ages, trying to find a spot. This so frustrates me, especially when there isn’t a car park nearby. As we approached El Paso, I was impressed with the restaurant frontage. I knew it had just been refurbished this year, and the fitters did an excellent job. It looked so modern, inviting and, actually, expensive, but not in such a way as to prevent you from stopping, having a look at the menu, then stepping inside. In fact, it’s not at all costly; three of us ate and drank for less than 60 euros. As we waited to be seated, I noticed that the layout was designed cleverly. There seemed to be two halves to the restaurant; the side we were on had a modern, comfortable dining area, with tables
laid out awaiting diners. We chose to sit there, inside the restaurant, by the large, glass windows, which enabled us to enjoy the cool breeze on what was an extremely hot summer’s night. The other half, poolside, seemed more relaxed. It was a place where you could eat, and, at the same time, watch sport on the large TVs, or whatever was going on in the pool area. The wine list and the menu were brought to us, and we were left to contemplate what to eat, which brings me on to the next thing I liked: the menu, which was simple and to the point! There was enough variety to cater for everyone, but not too much to make you frustrated; better a little done well, than a great deal done imperfectly. The menu comprises a page for tapas, which you can also have for starters, together with a page each
for mains, vegetables, and desserts. We ordered a bottle of house red, a beer and some water to have with our meals, the wine being an excellent choice. The tapas menu was our choice for starters, and we shared two dishes. The first was smoked salmon brochette with ricotta cheese, which, in itself, would have been enough for the three of us. The second was croquettes, three filled with ham, and three with cheese. Both starters were wellpresented, and we were able to sample each dish, all agreeing that we had made the right choice. Our mains varied. I had the fillet steak, cooked medium, while the others had salmon and pork dishes, and all three meals were accompanied by chips and salad. With just the right time to let your starters go down, our
mains were delivered and presented, professionally, like the starters. I have found over the years that when you order a steak and ask for it to be cooked “medium”, you don’t always get that. But mine was cooked to perfection! I asked for medium, and that’s exactly what I was given. It was a great chunk of gloriously-sumptuous beef, treated with great respect, and, as a result, was an absolute joy to eat. We truly relished our meals, so much so that none of us had room for desserts. That said, we left the restaurant having enjoyed these new memories, together with a shared experience, knowing we would return to sample more of the menu. What a good egg! By Val Sainsbury WHOLE eggs deserve a special place on your plate, not only because of their taste and versatility, but also because of their amazinglydense, nutritional profile. All too often, people succumb to the myths surrounding whole eggs, especially the egg yolk, and actually believe that they can endanger their health. Eggs are among the most nutritious foods on the planet. Just think of the egg as the ultimate source of life; it contains all the ingredients required to develop a single cell into a live baby chicken. In order for that to happen, the egg has to pack all of the essential life-enabling nutrients in a very tight space. And this nutritive goodness can be also used to complete your healthy diet with a
variety of precious vitamins and minerals. They are one of the best sources of highquality protein on the planet, and the cheapest, as well! They provide your body with the whole package of amino acids required for building muscle mass and repairing tissues. Nutrition experts even recommend eating three whole eggs a day for a well-balanced diet. Cholesterol levels The egg yolk contains a high amount of cholesterol, but things are a bit more complex than that. Studies have never found a connection between normal egg consumption and coronary artery disease. Cholesterol is a structural molecule that is an essential part of the cell membrane of every single cell in the body. It’s responsible for the production of testosterone, oestrogen and cortisol, all of which are very important for the normal functioning of the body. Besides getting it from food, our body produces its own cholesterol in the liver. And when we eat foods that are rich in cholesterol, the liver
simply starts producing less of it, so the total amount of cholesterol in the body changes very little. Eggs actually contain high amounts of HDL (good) cholesterol, while transfats found in overly-processed and deep-fried foods contribute to rising levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. So, consuming whole eggs will not only bring vital benefits to your health, it can also reverse the negative effects of your junk-food choices. Protect eyesight Egg yolks are also packed with lutein, a type of carotenoid that helps prevent macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness. Lutein is also found in green leafy vegetables, but research has shown that the body is able to absorb it way better from eggs. In addition, yolks also contain zeaxanthin, an antioxidant that protects your eyes from the harmful ultraviolet radiation. Protect bone health Vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption and maintaining bone health, so, if you don’t get enough of it,
you might increase your risk of osteoporosis and other bone diseases. Since Vitamin D is naturally present in very few foods, many people aren’t getting enough of it on a regular basis - so egg yolks come to the rescue, yet again. If you don’t have enough time to sunbathe, or sunny days are rather scarce where you live, eggs can be a convenient way to supply your organism with a decent amount of Vitamin D. Fight off iron deficiency In case you’re suffering from an iron deficiency, which is characterised by frequent headaches, fatigue and irritability, eggs can help you a great deal. Two large eggs contain 2 milligrams of iron, and, with frequent consumption, you can significantly improve your intake of iron. Maintain a healthy weight Eating eggs can help you increase feelings of satiety and control hunger easily. Having eggs for breakfast will keep you full longer than most types of food, which, in turn, will limit your calorie intake throughout the rest of
Coral Bar
the day, resulting in greater weight loss. The protein in eggs provides a steady and sustained source of energy for your body which doesn’t cause a surge in blood sugar or insulin levels. Healthy brain development Egg yolks are rich in choline, which is an important nutrient for the proper functioning of the brain, especially crucial for healthy brain development in foetuses and newborns. Studies have shown that eating more eggs during pregnancy and lactation can stimulate the brain development and function of babies. In addition, a study from the University of North Carolina found that choline can reduce the risk of breast cancer by 24%. In conclusion Eggs have long been considered as the perfect food, and there are plenty of good reasons for that. Making eggs a staple food in your diet is not only safe, it’s actually more than beneficial for your overall health. And don’t just reach for the whites, because the yolk is equally important.

Cats Welfare News IT'S a problem shared everywhere, and certainly, here in Tenerife, black cats are hard to rehome. Through no fault of their own, sometimes it’s down to age-old superstition, but also people tend to choose “prettier” coloured cats. Either way, here are a few reasons why you should own a black cat. Black cats were worshipped in ancient Egypt; owning one was thought to bring good luck. Black goes with everything, and they won’t clash with your decor, or what you’re wearing! Most black cats are not actually black at all, but a mix of all sorts of dark colours. Look at a black cat in the sun, and you’ll see a variety of shades. There are many famous black cats, such as Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Binx from Hocus Pocus and Isis from Star Trek. Because they’re so beautiful, they photograph amazingly. All you have to do is put them in a good light, and watch their features really show. They're exotic: black cats

are described as “sleek”, and look like miniature panthers. They’re healthy: research has shown that their black coats have evolved, separately, many times in different species, indicating dark fur as being a survival benefit, meaning that black cats are more resistant to diseases. But, simply, the best reason to adopt a black cat is
because they are the least likely to be adopted. At Cat's Welfare, if you adopt two kittens together, the kitten injection, microchip and neutering is FREE for the second kitten. Adopt a black kitten, or two, and both kittens receive the above, FOR FREE. Louie He dreams of finding a loving home where he can
sleep on a warm bed, have regular meals and someone who will stroke his head and keep him safe. He is a gentle, four-monthold male and has been castrated, vaccinated and microchipped. He is mainly black, but has a cheeky bit of white, and an unusual brown bit on his head. He is very friendly, and loves other cats and playing games. Adoption is free Contact us via our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com or ring/whatsapp Maria (English) on 6466 29129, seven days a week 9-6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm on 6712 82773. All kittens go on a week's trial, so you can be sure you've made the right decision. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. Ron loses brave battle Ron Eastwood RIP (7/12/43-1/8/17)
SAN Blas Church, on Golf del Sur, was last week packed with close friends for the funeral of Ron Eastwood, who died on Tuesday, 1st August. They were celebrating his eventful life, together with the Anglican clergy, who knew him well. He was a keen businessman throughout his adulthood, but 73-year-old Ron, who retired to Tenerife some years ago, was probably better known for being an excellent golfer at Golf del Sur and, later, at the neighbouring Amarilla Golf Club, giving freely of his time and experience. As a young man, Ron rode horses competitively, with visions of a professional career. But, sadly, his father died when he was 15, and he was forced to get a job to support the family. He became an apprentice joiner, which opened the door to his long and varied career in the building trade. By the time he was in his forties, he owned and ran several businesses, the first of which he transformed from a loss-making failure into a multi-million-pound concern. Ron was renowned for his honesty and hard work, and his dream was to spend his retirement here with his beloved wife, Sandra. But he was never the type to pack up work completely, feet up in front of the TV, and he soon found himself running a handful of other businesses connected with cleaning, construction, property sales and management. The death of Sandra, 11 years ago, led him to a new and deeper faith, and Ron started attending San Eugenio church services soon after. Margaret, who had been close friends with the couple, back in their native Lancashire, came into his life once more. Ron never expected to find love again,

and he was delighted when their renewed friendship blossomed into romance. Three years ago, they switched their allegiance to the San Blas Anglicans, and, along with their Yorkshire Terrier Suzy, occupied the front, left-hand pew every Sunday. And their Gibraltar wedding, last December, was one of the happiest days of their lives. Modest though he was, Ron always a made a big impression with everyone he met, and he will be much-missed by so many of his friends, none more than those who attended his funeral, following his brave battle with ill health. Proud wife Margaret said: “Suzy and I would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone during Ron’s illness for their love, support and prayers. “It was a great comfort to my Ron, knowing that so many people were praying for him, and his Service of Thanksgiving at San Blas was beautiful.” She added: “Thank-you to the wonderful people who had a hand in the organisation, and to everyone who attended. Thanks also for all the messages, e-mails and cards I have received. As I told our Vicar, John, ‘I am truly blessed’. “God bless you all, and Woof ‘n’ Licks from Suzy.” The Reverend Rachel Ganney, who conducted the service, said: “Ron truly was a decent, kind man. He always had time for people, and was loved by all in the Anglican Church here. “And I was privileged to be with him, and Margaret, during his last hours.”

Subject: Balcony dog
Dear Editor, I AM “just a dog”, living in Tenerife in the Canary Islands, and I’m one of many, living in terrible, unacceptable conditions. Just for the record, do you know how the Canary Islands got their name? The name Islas Canarias is probably derived from the Latin name Canariae Insulae, meaning “Islands of the Dogs”, a name applied originally to Gran Canaria only. It’s ironic, really, thinking about this because the Canary Islands is one of the worst places on the planet for cruelty to animals. There was the story about Martin the dog, just over a year ago, when people tried to kill him in several different ways, and, in the end, they buried him alive. Luckily, someone found him, and, thanks to local vet Yaiza and her team in Los Cristianos, he survived and discovered that not all humans were evil. Sadly, Martin has now gone to the rainbow bridge, BUT he is a symbol of what can be achieved by decent humans. The laws in the Canary Islands give no protection for animals, which is why they are abused in so many horrific ways. I am living right in the middle of Los Cristianos, where all you tourists walk past my tiny balcony every day. You don’t know I’m there, but I can hear you. I am surrounded by my own poo and lots of flies; my drinking water is green and I don’t get very nice food. I would love to be with humans that care. I would love cuddles and long walks, and, most of all, I’d like to be a real family member. In March, some kind people made a denuncia to try to help me. But now its August and nobody has come to my rescue. It’s very hot now and I am covered in flies, and still surrounded by my own poo. Why do humans have pets if they don’t care about them? As a dog, I simply don’t understand. Please help me get a better life. Thank-you (Name and balcony address withheld).

K9 charity shop: our lifeline
OUR K9 dogs and cats are very aware just how much K9’s charity shop in Alcala contributes towards their wellbeing and comfort. Only a few years ago, the refuge was on the brink of closure as money was so tight. The opening of the shop at that time, and its continued success, has ensured that the refuge can continue. With over 150 dogs arriving at the refuge each year, who require care and attention until they find their forever
homes, the shop is a vital source of funding. The shop, and the Alcala weekly market, are run by a happy and friendly band of volunteers. Lynn, Christine and Dorothy (l to r in photo), together with Muriel, Hannah,
Katja, Wendy, Maggie, Brian, Sheila, Elsie, Jill and George - ably assisted by rescue dogs Bailey and Lottie - do everything! They organise and collect donations, knit colourful teddies and toys, collect and sell jewellery and, of course, staff the busy shop. Asked what they love about their work, the ladies on the market stall agreed: “We love animals, it’s fun, we have nice customers and, most importantly, we know
that what we do makes a difference to the refuge.” Hannah, who lives in Alcala, enjoys her time in the shop. “Most of all, I do it for the animals,”she said. “I’m retired, so it gives me a focus. It helps me to speak Spanish, and to integrate and be accepted by the community.” All the shop volunteers give of their time, generously, and one thing is certain, the K9 wonder dogs and cats hugely
appreciate their efforts. Located in Alcala Plaza, the shop is open 10-2pm, Monday-Saturday (closed Sundays), and the market is right outside every Monday, from 9-1pm. Why not pay us a visit? There are always lots of bargains to be had, and our volunteers will make you very welcome. Volunteers and, of course, donations are always wanted. Call at the shop or market, or telephone 646 561 035.

Football
Tenerife late for the party Ladies in charge
TENERIFE isn’t just a hotbed of women’s football. Tacuense and Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife graced Spain’s Primera League last season, but there are several well-respected female officials contributing to local football.
By Colin Kirby
NEVER let it be said that Tenerife peak too soon. The new Spanish Second Division season starts tonight (Friday) and Tenerife are at home to Real Zaragoza (kick-off 9pm). But there may be a raffle in the changing rooms to see who fills the vacant strikers’ roles. The management, shopping
in the bargain basement, always seem stuck at the check-out, waiting for offers to filter their way down from the money teams just before the August transfer window slams shut. The upside is that it forces young, home-grown talent to step up and grab their chance. Brian Martin Pages, from the B team, who has been the hit of the buildup games looks set for an extended senior run. Proven scorer Juan Villar, who has arrived from Valladolid, hit two goals in
Last Saturday, at La Orotava, the Teide Trophy game between CD Tenerife and Deportivo La Coruña was controlled by three female officials. Marta Hueza, Aiomara Diaz, and Belinda Castilla have all learned their craft in the Tercera and Preferente Leagues in front of a few hundred spectators. But this showpiece friendly pulled in 3,500 and was shown live on TV Canaria. The fourth official was a mere man, yet he was happy to play his part in this annual fixture.
All change at CD Marino
FIVE new signings will be on display for CD Marino on Sunday, at home to CD Tenerife B at noon in Playa de Las Americas. the 2-2 Copa Mahou home leg, played at CD Marino’s Playa de Las Americas ground. In the away leg and trophy decider, he pulled up with a leg-muscle injury as his new team lost 2-0. In between those games, a 1-1 draw at Ibarra saw newcomer Bryan Acosta shine in midfield, before having to fly back to Honduras for the birth of his baby. Brian Martin cemented his growing reputation at Ibarra with his onslaught on the home goal, but bad luck and superb home keeper Adrian stopped him from scoring at least three goals. The final friendly was the annual Teide Trophy game at La Orotava last Saturday night, against Deportivo La Coruña. That really exposed the lightness of Tenerife’s squad. Juan Villar and another new boy, Victor Casadesus, were out injured. Despite some encouraging
build-up play, it was a lost cause for Tenerife, and the Primera team ran out 3-0 winners. Pre-season games aren’t just about results, though, and Tenerife will have been encouraged by the form of new Argentine centre-back Luca Aveldaño, and young right-back Luis Perez, from Sevilla. Four more new additions were promised by the club management before the end of August, but they will need a few games to get used to their team-mates and club tactics. Last season, Tenerife never got into gear until November, yet they still ended in a near miss, having reached the promotion playoff final. A big advantage this season is the outright signing of new players (no fees involved) rather than loan deals. And the feel-good factor still hangs over the Heliodoro after last season’s
Last season faded after Marino’s good start, so an influx of new blood, and the promotion of some of the rich crop of junior players, will be the key to launching a promotion bid from the Tercera Division. Familiar Tenerife names like Zeban Buades, a midfielder from Santa Ursula, and Nami, a forward from Buzanada, will be joined by overseas addition Fabio Tonino, a left-winger from FC Brussels.
good football and honest endeavour. On the eve of the league kickoff, 30-year-old forward Paco Montañes was expected to arrive from Espanyol. He was on loan at Levante last season as they ran away with the title in Tenerife´s division. More of a wide player than an out-and-out striker, he does weigh in with his share of goals. But past experience has shown that there’s no deal though until the pen hits the paper.

Phoenix Bar, with Mitch hitting his usual 180, and London’s 148 finish, were taken all the way by an improving Waterfall, who just lost out in the trebles. A similar 5-3 scoreline was recorded as Spear Chuckers won the 701 game, leaving The Pub with their second defeat on the run. Sundowners’ Chris notched his first 180 of the season, and they scrapped for every point against Picasso’s, who were promoted with them. But they lost on the trebles, narrowly, for another 3-5 result. Emerald Lounge travelled across the top square in San Blas, and Daz scored his first maximum this term. But The Tavern A proved too strong and emerged 5-3 winners. Sandy’s kept top spot in Division 2 by winning 7-1 against Lady Macs. But Mrs Brown will be a proud mum because Ami beat Paddy, and 13-yearold Jimmy hit a brilliant 67 finish. A 5-3 result was played out between Nauta No-
mads and Nutty Nautas, with Nomads clinching the trebles to claim the match. Naughty Nautas also triumphed by the same score as they won the last game in a close match at home to Bar 180 B, for whom Jackie H threw a 171. Bar Leones took five points from Marilyn’s A by securing victory in the threesome, while Buzzing Bees and Our Place Breakaways produced some high-scoring darts in a great atmosphere, despite the Bees’ onesided, 8-0 success. There was yet another close call at Legends, where Pas O Nadas B lost 5-3, the narrowest of margins. The only draw of the night was fought out at Marilyn’s, where the B team were victorious in the 701 game, sharing the points with Ourplace Playgirl’s. Pas O Nadas A travelled to Gaffers, and, in some high-quality games. came away with a 6-2 win. Gualty scored a 180, followed by Daddy Cool with a maximum, then a 170. Sadly, though, it didn’t count because Richard, employing some Dianne Abbott counting skills, had only 171 left. Despite this setback, Gaffers remain top of the

league ,just ahead of The Pub, who also went down 6-2 at home to titlechallengers Scruffy Macs. And although Ali finished on 113 for the hosts, this meant three defeats in a row. Boothen’s Sam hit a maximum 180 in a 6-2 win over Picasso’s, and they look menacing, with games in hand over the top two.

B with a 5-3 win, the points and games at the top of the league were identical. Teams deserving a big hand are Clouseaus, who turned up at Nutty Nautas with only three players but drew 4-4, and Marilyn’s B, who could enrol just three players for their game at Bar 180 B (now Loch In B) and suc-
cumbed 6-2 after a great night’s hospitality. Marilyn’s A triumphed 5-3 against Buzzing B’s, with the Dutch back to snatch the trebles. Lady Macs, steadily improving, lost 5-3 at home to Nauta Nomads, while The Red Devils shared the points at Our Place Breakaways in the final clash.

Nadal back on top SPANISH star Rafael Nadal is set to return to the top of the world tennis rankings for the first time in three years. But he knows it is by default only. Roger Federer, current No.3, who has a back injury, withdrew from this week’s Cincinnati Masters. He was sidelined, along with No.1 Andy Murray, No.4 Stan Wawrinka, No.5 Novak Djokovic and No.6 Marin Cilic, the defending champion, which left Nadal as the draw’s top seed. But Nadal, whose high hopes of winning Wimbledon this year were shattered by a last-16 defeat, said: “It’s just

coincidence. “We’re not 20 years old any more, and we’re not playing every week. It’s part of our sport, and I’ve been in their position lots of times. “I’ve missed more events than the other players, but I wish them all a speedy recovery. We need them in the game, and I hope they get back soon.” Regardless of this week’s results, it means that Nadal will return to the top spot when new ATP rankings are released next week. “It’s been tough to get back to No. 1,” he added. “But I’m happy to have the chance to be in that position.”
Messi jailed, or is he? THE Spanish Supreme Court has ruled that Barcelona’s superstar footballer Lionel Messi was responsible for three tax offences. It means that the 21-month prison sentence, imposed on him last July by Barcelona Provincial Court, still stands. Messi was found guilty of cheating the Spanish Tax Agency of 4.1 million euros during the 2007-2009 financial years, when he failed to pay tax on 10.1m euros of income for his image rights. Messi was given seven months in prison for each
of the three years he defrauded the Tax Agency, but he is unlikely to see the inside of a cell. As the sentence is under two years, the Provincial Court is likely to suspend the sentence, as is the custom in Spain when there have been no prior offences. The player’s father, Jorge Horacio Messi, was also given a 21-month sentence, but this was reduced to 15 months by the Supreme Court after his son returned the sum withheld from the Tax Agency. And it will probably be down-graded
to a suspended sentence as well. The Barcelona player’s defence had argued that Messi, from Argentina, had entrusted his father and his advisers with his business affairs. “I was dedicated to playing soccer,” he told the court at the time. “I trusted my father, and the lawyers we had chosen, to deal with our affairs. At no time did I think they could deceive me.” The footballer was also fined nearly two million euros, while his father received a 1.5m-euro penalty.
