Cheating company stripped of licence Continued from Front Intelligence gathered by CMR officers revealed that Lancashire-based Allsure Ltd encouraged holidaymakers to fabricate, or embellish, symptoms of gastric illness to gain compensation. Further evidence showed that the firm had used deceptive sales scripts, exaggerating anticipated pay-outs to entice consumers. This dishonest conduct has led to the Prestonbased company’s licence being cancelled, which means it can no longer offer its regulated-claims management services to new or existing clients. Kevin Rousell, who runs the Claims Management Regulator, said: “We will take firm action against claims businesses which engage in serious misconduct. And seeking to encourage false claims will not be tolerated.” In July, ministers stepped in to reduce cash incentives in bringing spurious claims against package-holiday tour operators. Under these proposals, tour operators would pay a prescribed sum, depending on the value of the claim, which would make the cost of defending a claim predictable. Allsure Ltd, based in Preston, Lancashire, has been operating in the personal-injury claims sector since 22nd April 2014. During an audit, CMR identified potential, systematic failings in Allsure Ltd’s sales scripts and call recordings. And, following an

investigation which began in February, the company breached the conduct rules when making marketing calls to consumers for holiday-sickness claims, offering false or unsubstantiated claims and misleading statements about the amounts due to them. It also attempted to coach these consumers into providing the answers needed to meet the criteria for making a claim. Allsure Ltd, which can appeal the cancellation of its authorisation, has 28 days to make its representations to the First-Tier Tribunal. Police say there has been a barrage of complaints for gastric sickness against hotels throughout the whole of Spain in recent years, which will take some proving. And that spells bad news for companies who have also employed similar tactics to Allsure Ltd in recent years, on mainland Spain, Tenerife and the other Canary Islands, and, in particular, Mallorca, in the Balearics. The CMR, based at the Ministry of Justice, regulates companies which offer to help people claim compensation for issues such as personal injury and mis-sold financial products. The action taken against Allsure Ltd is the latest in a series of moves by the UK Government to crack down on fake-sickness claims. And there will surely be other dodgy companies, concerned about losing their licences, following the latest news from Mallorca. There, one hotel group was

stunned by its 2016 list of sick claims, adding up to nearly four million euros! Diario de Mallorca, the island’s newsletter, has recorded that Triauno SL, owner of Club Mac Alcúdia, told police the complaints against its business, mostly believed to be bogus, were made in the Club’s three, all-inclusive resorts, called

Mars, Saturn and Jupiter. In total, 797 people entered 273 separate claims, worth 3.97m euros, which was a 700% rise on previous years. And some of the claims were put in by families, couples or groups of friends. Diario de Mallorca also says that just 32 of the claimants visited a doctor during their stay, which speaks volumes!

Private detectives, were called in to investigate “claims farmers”, whose job was to wait outside hotels and tempt tourists to put in claims. The investigators produced photographs of suspects, which were handed over to anti-fraud officers, who have filed a report to a Palma court.

Loro Parque’s dazzling star! PAZ VEGA, an internationallyknown Spanish actress, and her family, spent an enjoyable time at Loro Parque while on holiday in Tenerife. The Seville star, accompanied by her husband and three children, toured what TripAdvisor announces as the “world’s best zoo”. And she got to know about how the Parque protects the natural habitats, as well as raising awareness about the need for conservation of the biodiversity. She took advantage of her visit to thank Loro Parque’s team by signing the VIP guest book, in which she also praised their work. She also reassured visitors that it is, indeed, an international reference when it comes to modern and innovative zoos, which puts animal welfare, biodiversity conservation and environment protec-

tion first on its agenda. Paz, who rose to stardom in her role as Laura, on Spanish television show “Siete Vidas”, has won a Goya award as best stand-out actress. She has also played the lead role in many films and TV series, not only in Spain but also abroad. After living in the United States for 14 years, she has come back to Spain to release “Perdóname Señor”, a new TV series which has grown rapidly to become extremely popular. She is also working on “Fugitivos”, soon to be released on Televisión Española (TVE), and on

season 2 of “The OA”, a Brad Pitt production. Paz Vega’s family completed their visit by eating at Brunelli’s, considered one of Tenerife´s best steakhouses. It is located conveniently, right in front of the Park, and they had a chance to try deliciously-juicy meat, cooked in an oven unique in the Canary Islands because it heats up to 800 degrees. On top of that, Brunelli’s wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean guaranteed them an unforgettable, gastronomic experience, to put alongside the memories of Loro Parque itself.

‘Rajoy’s a liar’ say opponents MARIANO Rajoy was accused of lying during his own defence, and that of his Popular Party, against accusations of corruption. The Spanish Prime Minister was also told to resign, after being forced to appear in parliament by opposition groups. Rajoy claimed that, over the years, he had made 52 statements on corruption, and answered 32 questions relating to fraud during sessions of the “Prime Minister’s Questions” in the lower house. “I have always appeared before this chamber,” he said. “That is my duty as Prime Minister.” But Margarita Robles, the Socialist Party PSOE’s spokeswoman, who is also a Judge, replied: “You have not told the truth about the funding of your party, and you should retire out of dignity.” And Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias said: “Only someone who is incompetent

could not know what was happening in his party. The conclusion is that you are lying. You don’t deny the facts; you deny you knew anything about them.” Both left-wing parties charged that events and details surrounding the illegal funding of the Popular Party, from the late 1990s onwards, are now established, judicial facts. These facts included off-the-books accounts,

untaxed income for senior leaders and backhanders from companies, later awarded public contracts. Rajoy, who had been grilled for two hours as a witness in a huge, on-going Gürtel scandal case last month, did not “oppose political responsibility” being demanded of him in parliament. But he insisted that the correct means of doing so was not in an extraordinary

session, but in a noconfidence motion. “This chamber has not withdrawn its confidence in me or, to put it another way, it has not held me responsible,” he said. “My duty is to govern, and I shall continue to do so.” The PM used his opening remarks to defend the anti-corruption measures introduced since the Popular Party returned to power in 2011. These

included a ban on corporate finance and another ban on the pardoning of political parties’ debts by banks. Ms Robles said the PM’s “moral superiority” and “arrogance” made her blush. She added: “To say that you are working for justice shows a lack of respect for justice professionals.” Meanwhile, Podemos leader Iglesias wondered: “At which precise moment did you find out the financing of the PP was illegal? I hope you won’t reply that you read about it in the newspapers!” Albert Rivera, the Ciudadanos leader, criticised Rajoy and the other parties for turning parliament into a political rally, before proceeding to praise his own party and announce their favoured measures against corruption. “You have neither the legitimacy, nor the will, to fight against corruption,” he challenged, announcing that his party would introduce a bill in the autumn to limit the number of years a Prime Minister can serve.

Arona aroma leaves the bakers on a high

Airport havoc for holiday travellers TOURISTS are being warned of potential, lengthy delays at European airports this summer, because border checks have been strengthened. Travellers have had to queue for up to four hours after arriving at popular Spanish airports such as Madrid, Palma, Barcelona and Malaga. Needless to say, social media has been swamped with complaints about the long delays at passport control after reaching their destinations. Richy Conway wrote: “The problem is being blamed on the intro-

duction of stricter border controls, due to the Schengen Agreement, the border-free area that most EU member states are a part of.” British travellers can usually pass through with visual passport checks only. But new rules, introduced after the series of recent terror attacks in Europe, means that anyone from a non-Schengen country is checked against a database. Some airlines also suggest that airports have not brought in enough staff to minimise the effect of these rules.

OFFICERS from the National Police, who smelled something a little stronger than fresh air in Arona, got their teeth into an interesting discovery. The aroma in Arona emanated from a house in which members of an unauthorised cannabis association were baking cakes and biscuits. And, having seen a number of people entering and leaving the property, the cops popped in to see what was cooking. They discovered that the home-owner had a large amount of marijuana, some of which had been incorporated into biscuits and cakes. But he brushed the incident aside, explaining that it was simply an association

of like-minded individuals, promoting the use of the drug. A good explanation, perhaps, in this enlightened age… but unfortunately for him, the officers considered him

to be a dealer, handling illegal substances, and arrested him promptly. The police confiscated his drugs, leaving the Arona Courts to decide his fate.

Royal couple support for anti-terror, protest demo

Left: King Felipe in the midst of the protest. Middle: Bewildered Hafida Oukabir, whose terrorist brother was killed. Right: Up to 500,000 protesters flocked to Barcelona.

AN estimated halfa-million people, including the King and Queen of Spain, gathered in central Barcelona on Saturday evening in what is believed to be the biggest demonstration in Spain’s recent history. The public, and royalty, were responding to the terror attacks in the city and in the Tarragona province of Cambrils, which happened nine and 10 days earlier. Thousands of Muslims, and Presidents (or their representatives) from every Spanish regional and provincial government, took part. A collective, simultaneous cry of “No tinc por” (I’m not afraid), in Catalán went up, sending a clear message to the terrorism organisation that Spain was more united than ever. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was also present, marching alongside King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, while Catalunya’s military police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, headed up the throng, along with other members of the emergency services. They were all hailed as heroes for their brave and swift work last Thursday night and Friday morning, and countless more lives could have been lost without their magnificent efforts. In joining the march, King Felipe became the first Spanish sovereign to participate in a public demonstration since be-

fore the Franco-era. He, Rajoy and Catalan president Carles Puigdemont, who are bitterly divided by an upcoming independence referendum, made a rare show of unity in standing firm against the attacks. The 500,000-strong crowd marched down the exact street which had been transformed into a bloodbath nine days earlier. And numerous manifestos were read out, including those by Catalunyaborn actress Rosa Maria Sardà, and the Islamic Ibn Battuta Foundation’s leader, Miriam Hatibi. A parallel protest was staged in Cambrils, where five terrorists in an Audi A3 ploughed into late-night crowds, killing 61-year-old Ana María Suárez, from Zaragoza, who is set to have a street named after her, and injuring another six people before all five killers were shot dead by a lone police officer. The Barcelona attack left 13 dead, including at least two children: three-year-old Xavi, from Rubí (Barcelona province) and sevenyear-old, BritishAustralian Julian, who spent his last minutes cradled in the arms of a British man, who was determined not to let him die alone. A total of 132 people were injured in both attacks, and 25 remain in hospital, of whom 16 are still critical. Pau Pérez, 34, from Burgos, well-known locally for his aid work in Haïti, was knifed to

death by Barcelona van driver Younes Abouyaqqoub, 22, who had hijacked his car, intending to use it for the Cambrils attack. Abouyaqqoub was later shot dead after going on the run, and then being identified and reported by a local woman. At the same time as the Barcelona and Cambrils gatherings, a 2,000-strong protest was held in the Girona province of Ripoll where all the terrorists had lived, many since earliest childhood. Banners flew from marchers’ hands, reading: “Only love will save the world,” “United against terrorism,” “Islam is peace,” “Their wars, our lost loved ones,” and “We’re not afraid”. Muslims carried placards reading: “Not with my hands, not in my name,” many on their second day of mass-demonstrating, having travelled from far and wide. Friday, the Islamic holy day, saw multiple Muslim associations from Navarra to Ceuta, demonstrating against terrorism, calling it “fascism” and “hijacking their religion”. In a speech, Ripoll Mayor Jordi Munell expressed his support and compassion for the Islamic community in the town and beyond, and his commitment to fighting extremism and radicalism. But the most stirring part of the demonstration came in a speech by Hafida Oukabir (pictured),

whose brother Driss, 28, is in custody on suspicion of being involved in the Barcelona massacre, and their brother, 17-year-old Moussa, who was shot dead by police while carrying out the Cambrils attack. Hafida, whose family has been shattered by grief - none of them knew what Driss and Moussa were involved in until it was too late - fought back tears

as she addressed the crowd. She had to break off a few times when she became overwhelmed with emotion. But as sister of two suspected terrorists, Hafida’s appearance was clear testimony to the fact that killings in the name of Jihad cause immense suffering for the perpetrators’ families, as well as those of the direct victims. “Us Muslims, who

live in Ripoll and Catalunya, cannot thank you all enough for your shows of support,” said Hafida. “We all share the same pain; we’ve all cried. And the total disbelief and bewilderment over what has happened is the same for all of us.” She received heartfelt applause for her bravery in standing up in front of the crowd, and her speech moved most of people to tears.

Drugs’ man

caught

NATIONAL Police have arrested a 44-year-old Italian man in Adeje, on a European arrest warrant for drug-trafficking. He was found living in Avenida Constitució, and was found after trying to obtain Spanish residency with fake identity documents… the same paperwork he used to elude Italian authorities. The man will remain in custody until his extradition to Italy.

Police border battle in migration season

SPAIN’S security forces have so far detected about 800 crimes, during the annual migration of workers, between Europe and North Africa, for their summer holidays. These included 125 attempts to enter the European Union illegally by hiding in vehicles, or using false documentation. The main purpose of Operation Minerva, which takes place annually from the middle of July, is to challenge cross-border crime, including the terrorist threat. Almost 700,000 individual inspections have been carried out so far in the Spanish ports of Algeciras, Tarifa and Ceuta. Several stolen vehicles have also been recovered, and incidents related to drug-trafficking and other criminal activities have been reported. In addition to the Spanish police presence, several cops from European member states have taken part in the operations.

1st September - 7th September 2017

End of the road for sex-trafficking ring SPAIN’S National Police have smashed an international sex-trafficking gang, which has been operating out of Malaga and Benidorm.

Twenty-five people were arrested last week, including a woman in Madrid, the suspected ringleader in Helsinki and two suspected traffickers in Barcelona. In addition, 16 “trafficked” women were freed in the operation, carried out in conjunction with Finnish police. The trafficking ring, which also operated in Nigeria, Niger, Libya and Italy, was present at every stage of the sex slaves’ journey, including recruitment, transfers and accommodation. The investigation began when agents of the Madrid

Asylum and Refuge Office detected two young Nigerian women, suspected of being victims of trafficking. They launched a serious probe immediately. Cops soon discovered that the network was based in Nigeria, where most of the victims were captured. Most were young women, in disadvantaged areas, and in desperate situations, who were forced to submit to various voodoo rituals

to “ensure their absolute fidelity”. They then went, via Niger and Libya, to Italy, risking their lives by travelling on excessively-overloaded boats, which lacked any safety measures. Once there, they were placed in immigrant reception shelters, until they were housed in apartments, before travelling to Spain under the watchful eye of a senior sex-trafficker.

A man in Madrid produced fraudulent documentation for the victims, who were transferred to Malaga and Benidorm, where they stayed in apartments along with other members of the organisation. These gang members were responsible for initiating and then maintaining the women in prostitution, always under their control. The victims were forced to perform sexual services throughout every day, providing the network with piles of cash. These funds were forwarded to Nigeria, where they were used to finance new episodes of recruitment and transfers of victims to increase profits. To make the investment even more profitable, the victims were transferred to other locations in Spain, where they were also required to solicit in clubs.

No help for stranded boat It’s bollards to the terrorists!

THE “La Ballenita” fishing boat ran aground last weekend off the coast of Los Silos. But though its crew were safe, Maritime Rescue crew refused to tow it to safety. The crew had been night fishing when the tide went down, and they ended up stranded on a rock ledge, near Buenavista. Once daylight broke, the crew and other volunteers emptied the fuel tanks and took the fishing gear ashore before attempting to rescue the boat when

the tide came in. The Maritime Rescue boat “Alboran” was all set to tow the boat back to Garachico harbour, then refused to do so. “This is incredible,” said Fernando Gutiérrez, Canarian Fishing Federation President. “How can Maritime Rescue deny aid to a Spanish vessel? They work for this country and are meant to help in such situations.” He plans to address the relative authorities, “to demand responsibilities”.

SANTA Cruz Town Council, which has been studying the areas in the city at risk of possible terrorist attacks, will install new bollards as a deterrent where necessary. They will also be working with the state to reinforce police presence on the streets. These decisions were made during a local council security meeting,

sparked by the recent attacks in Catalonia. It was chaired by Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, and Guillermo Díaz Guerra, subdelegate of the Canarian Government. Díaz Guerra said: “Santa Cruz is at no higher risk than any other provincial capital,” while the Mayor added: “We have analysed the situation, and some preventive actions have already been implemented in the city, while others will be installed over the next few months.”

EU groups lose Brexit trust in Home Office CAMPAIGN groups, representing EU citizens anxious to protect their right to remain in the UK after Brexit, have warned they will reject any deal that gives the Home Office any say in their future. Grassroots campaign groups across the UK and Europe wrote to EU negotiators on Monday to say the Home Office “cannot be trusted”, following last week’s debacle when the department, mistakenly, sent up to 100 letters to EU nationals living in the UK, ordering them to leave the country or face deportation. “If serious errors like this can be made whilst the UK is still administering a system based on EU freedom-of-movement

rights, what is likely to happen when it is running its own system, having ‘taken control again’?” asked British in Europe, a coalition of 11 citizen campaign groups across the EU and the UK. The3million group, which campaigns for the rights of EU citizens settled in the UK, is also informing

the government that it is, officially, opposing the post-Brexit offer of a new immigration category of “settled status”. Nicolas Hatton, co-founder of the3million, said: “We talked to some of the EU citizens who received these letters. It was a terrifying experience for them. We have tightened up our

policy over the summer, and we have decided we have no option but to oppose the settled status on offer. “We are saying that ‘settled status’ will put people under the direct rule of the Home Office, and that would be fine if the Home Office could be trusted. But we have no confidence in the Home Office. They cannot be trusted.” As the third round of Brexit talks got under way in Brussels, The British in Europe group told EU officials that the purpose of its letter was not simply to complain about UK maladministration, but to ask the commission to “focus very closely on this issue in negotiations”. The Home Office has apologised for its error, but British in Europe says the blunder highlights the risks of being at the mercy of the department after Brexit. The group says it wants

the Government and the EU to agree that EU citizens can continue to have permanent residency rights which stemmed from the EU treaty, also allowing British citizens in Europe to live in other member states. It is also opposed to the application process for settled status, and wants their rights to be rolled over automatically to the post-Brexit era. Hatton added: “The British government have pretended for a long time now that they care about EU citizens. We are seeking guarantees for our lifetime, and not one, two or five years. “The ‘settled status’ on offer would give the Home Office extraordinary powers, and, after last week’s maladministration, it is plain to see they cannot have a role here because there is no way the Home Office can guarantee those rights.”

Tenerife’s Teen British Empire DOMINIQUE Sands, who is just 14, took another step towards stardom when he was crowned Mr Teen British Empire 2017 last week.

Drug-smugglers

busted

THE Guardia Civil has dismantled a major drug-trafficking gang, who were smuggling large quantities of cocaine from South America into the Canaries and Spain.

During the operation, called “Miami”, six people were arrested, including its leader, a 29-year-old Spaniard, and a 56-year-old Argentine man, with ties to the Peruvian drug cartel. Some 470kg of cocaine were seized, worth a staggering 17 million euros on the black market, along with a sailing boat and speedboat. All six men were sent straight to prison. A large amount of documentation and sophisticated, electronic communication, and navigation devices, were uncovered in the home searches, conducted by Guardia officers.

The Puerto de la Cruz youngster, a student at the Sylvia Young Theatre School in London, also obtained an incredible 100% in the talent round, in which he produced his own contemporary dance. The competition was held at Gerrards Cross Crowne Plaza Hotel, in Buckinghamshire, on 24th August, and entrants had to participate in two catwalk appearances, dressed first in casual, then formal, gear. They also had to give a short interview, which was followed by a photographic round and the talent category. Dominique began training at the Tenerife-based Estrellas Theatre School, which now has six bases all over the island. From an early age, he

showed a remarkable talent for dance and performing, and his mother made a heart-breaking decision to send him to London to continue with what he loves most: the performing arts. He was fortunate enough to win a place at the Sylvia Young Theatre School, famed for producing stars, and this year, Dominique is going from one heady success to another. He has performed on Strictly Come Dancing and

on the Cartoon Network, and he also had a role in the award-winning film, Don’t Grow Up! When he was five, his mum asked him who his best friend was, and he replied: “The stage”. And, already, it certainly looks as though his partnership with the stage will last a lifetime. So watch out for him in the near future, on a stage or screen near you… because he’s a Tenerife star in the making!

Water-tank horror

A MAN and woman were injured on Monday in La Guancha, after a wall broke in a concrete water tank while it was being filled. The force of the water swept away the pair, who both suffered bad injuries. Paramedics stabilised both victims and took them to Hospiten Bellevue for further treatment.

Drones hunt missing man

THE Emergency Services are using two drones to search for Anthony John Dalton, a British national missing from Garafía, La Palma, since 22nd August. Carmen Brito, Emergencies Minister, said: “The drones offer a bird’s-eye view, which is useful in locating missing or lost people.”

Late-night brawl sparks one arrest A MAN was arrested after throwing a bottle during a fight involving some 20 people, outside a Las Americas nightclub in the early hours of last Sunday. It appeared to be a onesided brawl between Moroccans and five Spanish youngsters. The man detained was later seen by a judge and released after giving a statement. Relatives of the Spaniards said some had received injuries, and one of them was rushed to hospital with several cuts to his abdomen, which needed more than 20 stitches.

Catalonia’s strong independence bid A 45-PAGE bill, presented this week by Catalonia’s two pro -independence parties, the Junts Pel Sí (“Together For Yes”) coalition and the radicalleft Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP), is their statement of intent to grab power from Madrid and secede from Spain in October. “The Foundational & Legal Transition Law Of The Republic” has already been tabled in the regional chamber. But there is no date yet for its passage through parliament, and a vote. It proposes nationality rights in the new Catalonia, along with taking control of tax, elections, customs, social security and the civil service, as well as outlining a future Catalan Supreme Court and judicial structure. Benet Salellas, a CUP member of parliament, said: “The basis of the law is continuity.” Separatist parties want the “supreme” law to cover a period of several months between unilateral secession from Spain and the approval, via referendum, of a future Catalan Constitution. Article 1, “The Catalan State”, reads: “Catalonia is constituted as a democratic and social Republic of Law.” An unnamed source at the Prime Minister’s office, Moncloa, told Spanish news agency EFE: “It will never come into effect.”

Beyond that, it is not clear how the central government will respond to the latest challenge, which came less than two weeks after Catalonia’s terror attacks rocked the country. The document has no provisions for control of the different police forces operating now in Catalonia, or the armed forces. The text proposes a continuity of international and European law in the territory, but it makes scant mention of the intermediate step between the region and those bodies of law: the Spanish Constitution, to which the region is currently subject. It also allows for the possibility of the future Catalan state declaring a state of emergency. The bill is set to be passed before the next referendum on independence is called by the regional government, for 1st October. Carles Puigdemont, current First Minister of the region, told The Financial Times last week that his administration had already acquired 6,000 ballot boxes for that vote. A first vote was organised in November 2014, under

the stewardship of then First Minister Artur Mas. He was later prosecuted and banned from holding public office for two years. Both the bill and the referendum are opposed by the Spanish Government in Madrid, which appeals secessionists bills and declarations to the Constitutional Court immediately. That court has sided with the Government, and, unanimously, has so far rejected pro-independence moves in Catalonia. But the Catalan Government, and the secessionist parties in the regional chamber, have still pressed ahead. Junts Pel Sí and the CUP hold the balance of power in the regional parliament, thus controlling the regional government because the CUP’s 10 seats enable the others to govern. The management of the terror attacks, and the separatist demonstration in Barcelona on Saturday, have been interpreted in the pro-independence camp as proof that the region is ready to act as an independent state.

UK tops low-cost arrivals to Spain

AROUND 49.2 million foreign visitors have flown to Spain in the first seven months of the year, which is a 19.4% increase on the same period in 2016. And the majority of them have used budget airlines, says the Spanish Tourism Ministry. Companies like Ryanair, Easyjet and Vueling have led the way in that department, capturing 52.4% of total air traffic, while more traditional airlines catered for the remaining 47.6%. The UK led the lowcost arrivals with 9.66m passengers, representing 36.8% of the total - a 16.6% increase on last year. The Brits were followed by Germany and Italy, both with 11.4% of budget arrivals. Barcelona’s El Prat airport accounted for 24.3% of all low-cost travellers during the first seven months of 2017, up 8.2% to 6.3m passengers. Meanwhile, Malaga airport, which registered 3.17m lowcost passengers until July, showed a 14.1% increase and enjoyed 12.1% of total traffic. In July, Malaga added 644,769 passengers, which was 10.3% up on its 2016 figures. By communities, Catalonia, the Balearics and Andalucia have benefited most from the tourism boost. Catalonia received more than seven million foreign tourists on low-cost airlines. That represented 26.9% of its total number of travellers arriving by this route, which is 9.2% more than in 2016. In July alone, it increased by 6.9%, to over 1.36m travellers. The Balearic Islands, second in the list of those who benefited most, welcomed four million passengers, which was a staggering 20.5% more than last year, and captured 15.4% of the total.

NEWS IN BRIEF Bull-fight fans hit back

1st September - 7th September 2017

Animal-abuse farmer could just receive fine

FANS of bull-fighting, along with hunters and farmers, have joined forces to oppose the Balearic Government’s ban against the “sport”. Its Animal Protection Law, passed in July, forbade the harming of bulls during bull-fights, but campaigners have accused the government of “cutting rights”. A new protest group, Defence of a Rural World, is also protesting against bans and restrictions on popular, cultural activities. Some members are angry because bicycles and horses were recently banned from travelling along Mallorca’s protected Sa Canova Dunes region.

Alzheimer’s man dead

HUNTING dogs have found the remains of a man, believed to be Eusebio Alonso Morín, who had Alzheimer’s disease. He went missing on 4th August from Punta del Hidalgo, in La Laguna. But his body, which could not be identified because it had decomposed considerably, was discovered last Sunday. Yet the clothes matched those worn by Mr Morín, better known as Chelo, on the day he disappeared. Fire-fighters had to recover the body because it was in a difficult area for medics to reach. The National Police have taken charge of the investigation.

Brutal thug mugs man

A LOCAL thug, well-known to the police, was arrested in Tamaraceite, Gran Canaria, after mugging a 54-year-old man and stealing his 600-euro wage packet. Medical staff from Hospital Doctor Negrín, who told the National Police they were treating a man with facial fractures and various broken teeth, also tipped them off about the 24-year-old thief.

Bathers’ bomb scare

TEDAX, the Guardia Civil’s bomb squad, was notified by Local Police that a suspicious cylinder, similar to an underwater beacon, had been found by bathers on the popular Papagayo beach in Lanzarote last Sunday. After an inspection, the bomb squad decided on a controlled explosion, and, with the help of local authorities and the fire brigade, the beach was evacuated. Even so, it took two explosions to destroy the cylinder.

Holiday hell for fliers

HUNDREDS of travellers had their plans disrupted on Monday through storms, which hit the Costa del Sol, and planes were diverted from Malaga airport to other Andalusian cities. Ten flights, from the UK, France, Holland and Sweden, which switched to Seville and Granada because of electrical storms, were grounded for several hours before getting the go-ahead to complete their journeys.

CHARGES of animal-abuse have been brought against an Almerian man, who was discovered to be keeping seven dangerous dogs in atrocious conditions at his Sorbas farm.

Guardia Civil officers, who raided the premises after being tipped off by suspicious locals, found seven dogs of dangerous breeds requiring special permits. All the animals were in obvious, physical stress with some unable to stand, and badly malnour-

ished and dehydrated. One Rottweiler with untreatable gangrene was later put down by a vet, and a Bullmastiff had a serious wound in its neck from being tied so tightly to a chain. Another cross-mastiff was on the verge of starvation and needed urgent medical attention. Just four of the dogs were microchipped, while the other three hadn’t been vaccinated. The farm owner could not provide the proper paperwork or permits, and the animals were kept behind fencing and separated from one another. The owner said it was to prevent them from fighting,

but police saw that they could hardly move, let alone fight. Sanitary conditions were extremely poor, and each dog was tied to a different part of the square enclosure. Within the perimeter, there were untreated faeces, pools of urine, scraps of hair, empty paint cans and bones, possibly from other dogs which had perished there. The owner has been reported to Almeria’s criminal court. But it is extremely unlikely that he will face a prison sentence. That’s because fines for animal abuse in Spain can be as little as a few hundred euros.

Dog of the week - Puppy PUPPY is a four-monthold Presa Canario, who was dumped with his mother near Los Abrigos. They were exhausted and dehydrated. They are OK now, but need homes of their own. If you would consider adopting Puppy, please first Google the breed as they are big, powerful dogs. But look how sad he looks; such an awful start to life. He desperately deserves a chance. Please call Sue on 629 388102 for more information, and to arrange a meeting or no-obligation trial. Adopt don’t shop, is always the best policy! We need a van! Our van has died at the worst possible moment; the summer, when our shops are quiet. Isn’t it always the way? Although we dream of having one donated (dreams are good), realistically, if we can find a cheapish one, we will be happy. We need

Litter training USING the litter tray is second nature to most cats. Training kittens to use one is usually as easy as showing them where it is, and putting them in it. When you bring your cat home, the litter tray should be one of your first stops. Let them sniff it, and then place them inside it. They may dig around, or jump back out, but just place them inside it again in an hour or two. Often, cats will shun the litter tray if it’s not in a quiet location that they can access at all times, but don't position it near their food or water. Cats are fussy about their trays, so, to provide them with the most appealing “bathroom” facilities, you should clean it daily and change it weekly. Just as we don’t like to use filthy, overflowing toilets, cats don’t like wading through waste to find a patch of clean litter. Don’t use litter that is scented, because it's only geared towards the owner, not the cat. Some cats will refuse to use trays containing heavily-scented litter, and some may prefer one type of litter to another. The litter types are claybased clumping, clay-based

non-clumping, crystal, and natural/biodegradable. If you experience problems getting a cat to use the tray, experiment with different varieties of litter. Wash your litter tray thoroughly every week or two. Over time, a litter box will absorb cat urine (even with liners). Wash it thoroughly with soapy water every week, and be sure to rinse meticulously so that it doesn’t retain a strong smell of detergent. Getting used to a litter box isn’t difficult for most cats. If you know your cat’s littertray preferences, you’re unlikely to encounter any unpleasant accidents. Cat of the week - Ritzy

FRANCISCO Núñez Olivera, now acknowledged as being the oldest man in the world, was born and bred in the village of Bienvenida, in the Badajoz province, 112 years and eight months ago! He has taken the top spot following the recent death of Israel’s Yisrael Kristal, and he expects to live until at least 13th December, when he hits the 113 mark. Francisco was still walking around the village on his own until he was 107, simply stopping on street corners to chat to other locals when he tired. Now, though still healthy, he’s in a wheelchair and lives with his 81-year-old daughter, María Antonia. He puts his long life down to genetic factors, mostly… his brother Luis, who lives in Asturias, is 95 and his sister Jacoba, who’s also from Bienvenida, is 93. But he has also enjoyed a healthy diet and, with age, the loss of most of his teeth has not changed this. Francisco lives mainly on vegetables and pulses he grows himself on his allotment, which he has tended to and lived off since earliest adulthood. And he still enjoys a “decent

glass of wine” regularly. María Antonia, so proud of her dad, says his elegant demeanour earned him the nickname of “Marchena”, after the famous flamenco singer of the same name from Seville. The “real” Marchena staged a concert in Bienvenida 91 years ago, just days before Francisco returned from military service in the Spanish-owned city province of Ceuta, on the northern Moroccan coast. He appeared in the village, dressed impeccably in a tailored suit and looking

incredibly chic, healthy and handsome - features which did not go unnoticed among those he had grown up with. And, said María Antonia: “Dad has always been a kind, cheerful character, with a good heart and good habits”. She added that even long past his 100th birthday, he would work on his allotment regularly before going to the local bar to watch the football with his friends. And at 107, he would nip out to talk to people when he became bored with the match. Her dad, always keen

to educate himself, was thrilled when, at the age of 98, a successful cataract operations on both eyes enabled him to read his daily newspaper again. Other than that, and having a kidney removed at 90, Francisco has never been in hospital. And as well as claiming the oldest-man-in-theworld crown, he is also the oldest-ever Spanish service veteran, having fought in the Rif War in Morocco, and also in the Spanish Civil War. María Antonia says her father’s main secret has been “living life how he wants to live it, and following a healthy lifestyle”. The old boy said proudly: “There’s nobody else like me”, revealing that he has been receiving numerous letters from as far away as Germany, Australia, New York and México, asking about him, and requesting his photograph. Whenever people visit him, he always says: “I’m still here,” and as they leave, he asks: “Are you off already?”

Fresh, eight-year lows for GBP/EUR

THE euro’s supremacy over the pound and US dollar continued as August progressed, with GBP/ EUR being driven to a new, eight-year low of 1.0762 euros. EUR/GBP climbed, accordingly, to a high of £0.9291, while EUR/USD spiked to $1.2037. A notable lack of progress in the UK’s Brexit negotiations has been keeping the pound pressured over the last few weeks, with the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michael Barnier, asserting that Britain needs to start “getting serious” about talks. Although some positive sentiment was derived from Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson conceding that the UK would have to meet its legal obligation to pay a divorce bill to the EU, the development wasn’t substantial enough to give the pound a lift. Slowing UK inflation also left GBP struggling amid bets that the Bank

of England (BoE) will keep monetary policy accommodative for longer, if consumer price pressures ease. The euro, meanwhile, was bolstered by reduced demand for the US dollar, and rising hopes that the European Central Bank (ECB) will start tapering its expansive quantitative easing scheme within the next six months. The US dollar spent much of the second half of August struggling, as bets for a third US interest-rate hike from the Federal Reserve declined, and hopes that President Donald Trump will be able to follow through on his tax and spending policy plans remained dim. September is a month rammed with influential, central bank interest-rate decisions. The European Central Bank kicks off proceedings on the 7th. If ECB President Mario Draghi confirms that policymakers discussed unwinding quantitative easing at the gathering,

the euro could surge higher still. However, if Draghi instead stresses the negative implications of the euro’s current strength, and fails to indicate when policy will be tightened, we may see the common currency slide from its recent highs. The Bank of England will then be gathering on the 14th. The odds of the BoE making any adjustments to monetary policy at this juncture remain incredibly slim, but investors will be paying close attention to how many policymakers vote in favour of an

immediate rate hike. If more than two members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) vote for an adjustment, the pound could recover some strength. Conversely, if the BoE cites the recent slowing in domestic inflation as a reason why borrowing costs should remain at record lows, GBP exchange rates are likely to tumble. The Federal Reserve will be delivering its own interestrate decision on the 20th. Any signs that the Fed is done with raising interest rates in 2017 would be USD-negative, and could

send EUR exchange rates shooting higher. Fake Or Fortune

Sunday 3rd September, BBC1, 20.00

CW

The Fake Or Fortune team embark on their furthest-flung investigation, as they head to Australia to see if they can prove that an online purchase from an English auction site is a lost work by Tom Roberts, considered one of Australia’s greatest artists. When Australian couple Joe and Rosanna Natoli came across a painting bearing the signature ‘Tom Roberts’ on the website of an English auction site they couldn’t quite believe it. Roberts is considered one of Australia’s most important artists, a pioneer of Australian Impressionism whose works hangs in major galleries. Even minor pictures sell for hundreds of thousands of pounds and the painting, a dramatic image of an anguished artist titled Rejected, had all the hallmarks of a lost early work. After a fierce bidding war, Joe bought the painting, shipped it back to Brisbane and presented it to a leading expert on the artist’s work – only to be told that it was not genuine. This was just the beginning of Joe and Rosanna’s troubles. Three years after they bought the painting, Joe’s business went bankrupt and the family lost their home. Joe still firmly believes that his original hunch was right and he’s asked Fake or Fortune for help. As an early work by Tom Roberts, the picture could be worth over £200,000. If the team can prove that Joe was right all along, it might give the family a chance to secure a home of their own. The team believe some of the answers to the mystery lie in Tom Roberts’s time in England, where he trained at the Royal Academy in the 1880s. The quest for further proof takes them to Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne - where they encounter several alarming fakes. Can the team find enough evidence to earn the painting a second hearing?

Sarah Moore and Jay Blades search the homes of celebrities to uncover unloved and unused gems for charity. Sarah and Jay look through the homes of 1980s pop stars Sinitta and Toyah Willcox in the hope of uncovering four pieces of junk to transform and sell on for a profit. Woodworking wizard Norman Wilkinson is tasked with taking on Toyah’s tired chairs, while robot-mad Mark Haig gives Sinitta’s broken fan a steampunk-inspired makeover. But will Sarah and Jay find new homes for their revamped items?

Tom (Stephen Moyer) and Sam’s (Zoe Tapper) world is turned upside down when news of a shocking crime breaks. Years previously Tom investigated a series of abductions perpetrated by an assailant known as ‘The Crow’, who took wives away from their husbands as they helplessly watched. On hearing breaking news of a crime bearing the same hallmarks Tom heads to the crime scene, revealing to DCI Jane Burr (Sunetra Sarker), terrifyingly, he believes the Crow is active again.

Diana - our Queen of fashion & hair we had queues out of the door as soon as she changed her hair. She was our style icon, and many salons made a lot of money recreating her crowning glory. For those who weren’t around at the time, she made the stars of today look like mere amateurs. Her presence lit up the TV, or any event at

TO those of you who knew her, met her or just admired her from afar, this week’s column is about one, great, hair-andfashion icon who changed the world of fashion and hairdressing, for good. Princess Diana was, and still is, our Queen of Hearts, just as she desired, and this week marks the 20th anniversary of her death. Diana made such an impact when she came into our lives, not only with her beauty and charm, but because of our British and global desire to have a fairy-tale wedding and a true Royal Princess. She achieved this and so much more, but it’s about her fashion influence that I write this column. We had never seen anything like it, and she graced every inch of every magazine worldwide, being scrutinised from top to toe, yet rarely making a fashion mistake. Her image was copied, worldwide, and everyone, no matter what creed

35 CW

which she appeared. Diana was, and still is, big news, but what was it she had that drew us to her so much? I can only give my view, but I’m sure it’s matched by many others. She was Royal, but reachable; she was compassionate, yet strong. Her heart reached out to those less fortunate, and

she gave so much of herself we will never get to know about. So, let’s be thankful she touched so many lives, and be grateful that her life, albeit short, brought so much style, beauty and joy to the world. Diana - you will always be my No.1 style icon. From head to toe, the world still has a lot to learn from you.

or colour, was influenced by her wardrobe, propelling the UK fashion industry to the forefront. Designers fought to dress her, and, when she wore an item, it was copied instantly, from shoes to bags, dresses to

gowns. Diana was a big seller, and the fashion industry knew it. As far as her hairstyles went, they were “the” ones to have, and, even those who shouldn’t have, bought the Diana look. In the salon where I started,

WINDOW dressing plays a massive part of interior decorating. In my experience, people often underestimate how important it really is, until they see the end result. There is so much to take into consideration when choosing how to dress your windows and patio doors, such as the need for privacy, blocking out unwanted sunlight, or letting through as much natural light as you can. A key rule is never

blocking too much of your window with the actual curtains; have the rail or curtain pole as high, and as wide, as you can. This automatically maximises the area, and gives a more spacious look. It also helps if you keep the area free of furniture, so the curtains aren’t squashed behind sofas etc. The choice is endless: curtains, roller blinds, Venetian, Roman, vertical - the list goes on, all of which hold their own where suited best. My personal favourite for a typical patio door in our Tenerife homes is a light, contemporary look of a combination of both curtains and blinds. The blinds can be either roller blinds, Roman or whatever is the most suitable. The two together

can either perfectly match, using the same tones and even the same fabrics, or colour contrast completely to match in with other tones in the room. All this is finished off with a neat boxed-in pelmet to hide the rail. Although there are some beautiful patterns out there, if you’re not careful, choosing patterned curtains can restrict you to having to use other patterns in the room. Plain is a safe option; an airy, translucent curtain is enough, if you want to just soften the window area of a small apartment. If you need any more information, or quotes, contact us at Muebles Chic. We can supply and fit madeto-measure curtains, blinds, pelmets etc; everything you need to dress your windows!

1st September - 7th September 2017

Not thick enough for you? MANY of us have cut wheat and dairy products from our diets, for a variety of reasons, which could pose problems when we need to thicken certain foods. But, with the following options, you can cook your way to nutrient-rich dishes with ease. Pan reduction: The best way to thicken a sauce or gravy is to let it reduce until it thickens on its own, and then to whisk in some chilled,

rendered fat, from chicken, beef or pork, at the end. It can be used to replace butter, but it should also be added in its solid state, so chill it in the fridge until solidified. Egg yolk: Egg yolks work wonders for making delicious and silky cauli-mash. They can also thicken up a “creamy” sauce. Add a touch of coconut cream or coconut milk to your egg yolk, and whisk it together. Add the egg

mix to the dairy-free sauce, and heat it. Nut butters: These can add volume to smoothies and pancake batters, and act as thickeners in desserts. They can also add depth and flavour to curries and sauces. Pureed veggies/fruit: These include sweet potato, white potato, cauliflower, tomato, banana and apple. Pureed vegetables can be used to thicken soups and stews, whereas pureed fruit can add

volume to batters. Pureed pumpkin and sweet potato can add moisture to cakes. Coconut flour/almond flour: These are generally the goto flours because they are readily available. Coconut flour absorbs much more liquid than almond flour, so, in baking, you would either need less coconut flour or more liquid. They can both act as a binder for meatballs, fishcakes, wraps and rostis, as well as breading for fish,

chicken or pork. Coconut cream: This can add thickness to soups, stews and curries. Freeze coconut cream and whizz it with a high-speed, handheld blender for a delicious nondairy whipped cream. Avocado: Avocado is a wonderful thickener for smoothies, adding a creamy, velvety texture, and can even be used to thicken dips and desserts, without imparting too much flavour.

CD Tenerife

Sparkling Tenerife lead way By Colin Kirby

PINCH me, I’m dreaming! Two games, two wins, not a goal conceded, and playing sharp, expansive football. It’s a great time to be a CD Tenerife fan.

Barcelona B 0 CD Tenerife 3 The home defence were jittery, and a clumsy foul allowed Tenerife to increase their lead from the penalty spot. Suso converted the gift, and the game was over as a contest. Veteran Suso looked like a spring chicken, his old legs matching his everpresent enthusiasm. And he deserved to increase the lead just before the break after powering past a defender, but his finish wasn’t quite as strong. Villar squandered two clear chances just after the break. The Barcelona keeper won a duel for a loose ball, and the striker also put the ball wide with the goal standing empty before him. Vitolo had a cheeky halfchance, firing a long shot which the keeper managed to cover. But Tenerife’s build-up play was dazzling. They stroked the ball around and had Barcelona chasing shadows. This team are a work in progress, and the newest

Their win on Monday night was a joy to watch, and the margin could have been doubled with better finishing. From the kick-off, Tenerife set about ripping their hosts apart. Juan Villar started up front and he is a class act, always sniffing for a half-chance, and he brought the best out of Juan Carlos and Suso. They roasted the home defence and forced the keeper to make several, nervous errors. Dani was much more alert in the Tenerife goal, and his long-ball out to Juan Villar caught Barcelona on the hop. He slipped a perfect pass to Juan Carlos, who finished well to put CDT ahead.

CD Marino

More cards than Hallmark Ibarra 1 CD Marino 1

IT was a busy night for the referee, because, as well as the draw, the booking count was shared at four apiece, giving the football little chance to flow. Pablo grabbed a 24thminute lead for the home team, and it was to be an

eventful game for him as he was given his marching orders, deep into extratime, for a second yellow card. Marino, who clung on and levelled after 50 minutes through Nami, are still seeking their first win of the season. They are at home on Sunday against nearneighbours Buzanada, with a noon kick-off.

recruits will add even more to the squad. Longo made his debut as sub, and the Italian didn’t need long to get on the scoresheet. Suso opened up the home defence and laid the ball off to the new boy, whose finishing was sweet… and 0-3 didn’t flatter Tenerife at all. Coach Pep Marti has rebuilt the squad after just missing out on promotion last season. There was a swagger about this win, and the players are obviously enjoying their football. A few weeks ago, the big worry was where the goals would come from. Now, though, Marti’s squad has a much better balance, with plenty of attacking options. The away run continues with this weekend’s game at Valladolid, rolling on to Rayo Vallecano for the midweek, Copa del Rey clash. And, maybe, this will be the year for a moneyspinning cup run. For now, though, Tenerife are happy to be sitting on top of the Segunda Division.

Jorge Saenz called up

JORGE Saenz looked a class act in the centre of the CD Tenerife defence last season, and the Santa-Cruz-born player just keeps getting better.

He won two Under-19 caps for Spain in 2015, and was summoned to join the international Under21 squad for important games over the next few days. Jorge hopes to get runouts against Italy tonight (Friday) in Toledo, and then against Estonia on

Tuesday, in the European Championship qualifiers. He’s not 21 until November, but Jorge has grown in stature over the last couple of seasons, and he can even dare to dream of a full international career in the future, and top-flight football with his home-town club.

Trebles is a knockout THE Division 2 trebles knockout competition, held at Clouseau’s Bar, provided some excellent darts and fabulous entertainment by all present.

Marilyns B trio of Alex, Dave and Neil kicked off the night by seeing off Dick, Steve and Alex, followed by Belgian trio Luc, Patrick and Marc, who narrowly lost to the in-form Chris, Jim and Alan, from Legends. The hosts, Ed, Mark and Steve were next up and throwing well. But they were matched, dart for dart, by Marilyns B, and it was left to Neil and a double 14 in the deciding leg to put Marilyns through to a spot in the finals. Fudder John Boy and Dylan, from Ourplace Breakaways, were next on the oche, and, with a one-leg advantage and first to the double on the second leg, they should have taken the game. But resilient Legends snatched the pair of legs to win through. Down in Los Abrigos, Phoenix Bar staged the ladies’ competition and Lynn, Nikki and Ma-

rie from Loch Inn triumphed over T, Shar and Mo. But home players Jackie H, Jackie F and Yvonne were put out by the Playgirls’ trio of Tracy, Angi and Stella, who met Pas O Nadas B trio Karen, Gio and Ann following their victory over Naughty Nautas’ Julie, Sue and Joyce. Nikki, with a 64 finish, booked a final spot for Loch Inn B after a great game against Nora, Sharon and Lynn, from Palms Pool Bar. And Pas O Nadas B overcame Ourplace Playgirls in a close game to take their place later in the year. Half of the Division 1 trebles was played at Palms Pool Bar and, after some superb arrows, including a first 180 for Spear Chuckers’ Sean in the semis, the final was contested by Tavern’s Alan, Pete and Sam and the Pas O Nadas A threesome of Richard, Walter and Andy, who were unstoppable on the night, losing just one leg. The other half of the draw started with a comfortable win for Tom, Telf and Daniel over Palms’ Dennis, Dale and Ronnie. Boothen’s Sam, Steve
