Illegal drugs sold to gyms Continued from Front Most of the drugs relate to sports doping, and many of them were distributed to gymnasiums and sports outlets in the Balearic Islands (Mallorca especially), the Canary Islands and Barcelona, as well as in the provinces of Almeria, Huelva, Malaga, Tarragona and Toledo. Among those arrested were a number of top athletes, and international bodybuilding and fitness champions. The illicit substances were seized by Guardia Civil officers, and the success of the entire operation led to the gang being dismantled completely. Guardia Civil officers, with
the backing of Europol (the European Union’s lawenforcement agency), discovered that a selection of banned drugs were being sold at a gym in Palma. They included performance-enhancing anabolic steroids, as well as other doping agents, considered to be a health danger for users. Based on information from the first investigation, officers realised that the drug-trading was organised by a specialist gang, with sales much greater, and on a much larger scale, than anticipated initially. And though many of the drugs came into Spain, via Portugal, and were distrib-
Airport unions
in limbo TUESDAY’S strike talks between the Spanish Government and the airport unions, about the latter’s proposed 25 days of walk-outs this year, left some unions “fearing the worst”. The meeting, said to be “more technical”, also showed a distancing between the two groups, leading to further talks to try to regain the common ground they had. Airport unions have warned that the suspended 25 days of strikes will be called off, only if “all of their demands” over salary and staffing numbers are met. They describe the Government’s proposed changes as “insufficient”, and want a further 700 staff to help deal with Spanish airports’ ever-increasing influx of people. They also want more than a 1% increase to their salaries. PLANNED STRIKES September: 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 October: 1, 6, 11, 15, 27, 30, 31 November: 3 and 5 December: 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 Should the strikes go ahead, they will affect, hugely, Spain’s busy, national, bank holidays in October, November and December, including the Christmas period.
uted there, they were actually obtained from Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Poland and the US. They were generally smuggled in using motors with false floors, then sold around gyms and sports outlets in Spain. Altogether, investigators believe that between 2016 and 2017, gang members imported 4,400 parcels, weighing some 3.1 tons, which netted them around 2m euros. Cash was always paid for the banned substances, and, in an intercepted parcel, startled officers found 80,000 euros in notes, hidden in printer cartridges destined for Greece.
After 45 raids on properties, stores and homes across Spain, officers seized a huge volume of illicit drugs (steroids, speed, hashish, marijuana and cocaine), as well as 180,000 euros in cash, five luxury vehicles and a number of weapons. The Guardia Civil’s success followed a similar Spanish operation last year, when National Police flattened a gang also dedicated to supplying banned substances to people involved in a variety of sports. The organisation had the perfect outlet: a distribution network through the owner of a nutrition store, who also had several gyms
in Northern Spain’s Asturias region. In addition to providing anabolic steroids and performance-enhancing drugs, they also offered growthenhancement treatments, extracted from healthy athletes, which were then injected into the joints and tendons of others. The investigation was an extension of an earlier probe into a number of Olympians, suspected of using illegal drugs to enhance their performances. It led to a dentist, who offered to repair injuries by a process he referred to as “autologous transfusion” which was illegal, especially as he was a dentist and not a doctor!
Brakes slammed on drug-campaign van
A CERTAIN van has been parking every Saturday at a popular Bilbao spot for youngsters, out for a night of partying… and it is there for a purpose. The vehicle is staffed by people providing guidance about the risks of drug consumption. It is a mobile, “personal-information stand”, sponsored by the Basque city to “minimise the damage” caused by drug use. But controversy has broken out over the material being handed out to drug-users via the van, particularly a piece of plastic, the size of a credit card, which has this advice: “Pica bien tu raya” (chop up your line nice and fine), and “Rula sólo con tu rulo” (don’t share the straw you use for snorting drugs). The material, handed out throughout last month’s local fiestas, is also avail-
able from the van, and it’s a bone of contention. That is why the Popular Party (PP) conservatives have asked Mayor Juan María Aburto, of the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), to pull the campaign immediately. Now, after floods of protests, the local Health Department has decided to stop dishing out the material. The plastic card was available to cocaine and speed (amphetamine) users, and its message, printed in Spanish and Basque, added the following warning: “If it’s not properly chopped, you could damage your nasal passages.” Local staff were also handing out a brochure, recommending that users do not share a banknote or other objects used to snort drugs, in order to “reduce damage” and prevent “the spread of respiratory diseases and hepatitis”. Yolanda Díez, the Socialist’s Health Department
Councillor, insisted the aim of the campaign was to “minimise damage”. She added: “Our goal is not to encourage drug use, but if people are going to use drugs, they should at least use them safely.” The offending slogans were created by a group called Energy Control, which provides advice to the van staff delivering advice. Bilbao’s PP spokesman, Luis Eguiluz, said he did not question the campaign’s good intentions, but added: “The format is not adequate. It’s completely nonsensical to hand out something that looks like a consumption kit with such a frivolous, almost festive, slogan on it.” City officials have agreed to stop dispensing the material to drug-users from the van, although an information stand will still be available on Saturdays in popular, recreational areas.

The millennial, with plenty to say for themselves
CLIMATE change is the main issue concerning the world’s millennials - those born between 1982 and 2004 - according to the annual Global Shapers Survey, released by the World Economic Forum. Half of all young people surveyed said it was a pressing problem for the world, ahead of wars and conflicts. It was chosen by 39% of respondents, while social inequality was highlighted by 31% of people taking part. These responses come from a questionnaire answered by some 31,000 people from 186 countries and territories, between the ages of 18-35. On the Spanish front, results show that eight out of 10 youngsters believe corruption and government accountability are a major problem in their country, making it
Corruption is such a major problem, say youth of Spain the most pressing matter. The lack of economic and work opportunities was also selected as a problem by 74.4% of Spanish pollsters, while social inequality was selected as a major factor by 39.4%. But globalisation of the workforce is not a concern for the millennial generation. Almost nine out of 10 Spaniards surveyed said they would move to another country to find a job, or even to improve their employment position. The list of destinations they would move to is led by the US, with 24% of Spanish millennials also opting for this choice, followed by Germany (8.2%). The
remaining options were France, Italy, Australia and Canada. The desire to emigrate is higher in Spain than among millennials from other countries, where an average one in five responded that a better working life would not be a reason to pack his or her bags. At a global level, the US is still the top choice when it comes to emigrating for work, with 18.2% of people plumping for this option. Spain (3.6%) ranked eighth on the list of possible destinations. The responses from around 500 young Spanish participants, mostly students, also show that
57% consider it “very” or “extremely” important that the government addresses problems facing third-world countries. As for what they believe needs to change in Spanish society so they can feel more free, 60.1% of millennials want equal opportunities for all, while 43.7% want greater job security. At international level, more than half of the millennials surveyed believe their opinion is ignored when it comes to making important decisions for the country. They also said corruption was the main issue in their government, although the percentages were lower than in Spain.
The newer generation argues that governments could regain their confidence by fighting corruption and removing corrupt politicians from their positions, a move which doesn’t appear to have been addressed for years! The study also showed that millennials around the world were optimistic regarding their jobs and technology. More than 75% of people surveyed believe that technology creates more jobs than it destroys, though ethical questions about technology met with more mixed responses. A 40% total of respondents are wholly against implanting a chip under their skin to improve skills, with men (30%) more likely to favour this development than women (17%). Millennials also believe artificial intelligence will probably be the next major, technological leap forward. But half the people in this age group wouldn’t trust a robot to make decisions for them!
Poor woman’s shouts for help are answered
SANTIAGO del Teide’s Local Police were called by a young woman in a Los Gigantes building to say that she could hear an elderly lady crying for help in an apartment there.
Emergency Services dispatched an ambulance and the fire brigade to the property immediately. Fire-fighters, who had to break down her door to gain access, saw that the 70-year-old had fallen between the kitchen and the dining room. She said she had been there for three days, so it was a wonder she was found alive. It was also a miracle that the youngster,
who works for a cleaning firm, heard her cries for help because the poor woman hardly had the strength to talk, but she kept repeating “thank-you, thank-you”. She was taken to hospital for further medical care, and we understand that the officers involved will visit the woman there because she has no family on the island.

New-look schools to please students ADEJE schools have welcomed back hundreds of students this week after the summer holidays. Primary schools reopened their doors on Monday, and the borough’s secondary schools followed suit on Wednesday. During July and August, the local Council invested over 50,000 euros in repairs to centres in the borough. And Adeje Education Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera said: “This year, we have invested money in improvements in all the borough’s public centres, following specific requests from the schools. And the work carried out has also improved security for pupils in the schools.” These improvements were carried out in conjunction with the Department
of Works and Local Development, under Councillors Esther Rivero Vargas and Manuel Luis Méndez Martín. In Fañabe, the entrance to the school has been upgraded, with resurfacing and improvements to the park, as well as an improvement in telecommunications in the school.
And in Adeje Casco (pictured), the pavement outside the school’s main, lower gate has been extended to offer greater safety to pupils. There is a ramp for those with reduced mobility, while the steps to the courts have been improved, and there is a new zone for the parents’ association AMPA. The canteen floor in Los
A protest over the sea’s raw sewage!
AROUND 5,000 people took to the Santa Cruz streets last Saturday, in protest against raw sewage being pumped into the sea. Under the motto “For a clean sea”, the association In Defence Of Our Land summoned the protest, which began at 11.30am in Plaza Weyler. Members marched along the city centre, chanting slogans such as, “I want to swim and not get sick”, “Coalition Canaria are s***,” “Send the sewage to Clavijo’s house”, and, in clear reference to Tenerife Cabildo President, “Less corruption and more purification”. This was the first of many more planned protests, demanding that all waste-water on the island be treated before it is pumped into the sea.
Olivos has been renewed and there is a new archive area, and the Las Torres school farm has been completed. In Armeñime, the sports courts have been resurfaced, and the gardens and school farm upgraded, and there’s a new pavement in Tijoco Bajo, with adapted paving, and the centre’s façade
is being redecorated. While the secondary schools are actually run by a separate body, the Council has met some of their outstanding needs and will be installing a new pedestrian access to the IES Adeje II (El Galeón), and placing benches in the IES Adeje I (Los Olivos) patios. Sanitation facilities have been repaired in all the borough’s infant and primary schools; classrooms and communal areas have been painted, and garden and greens have also been spruced up. Education Councillor Ferrrera added: “We have met the requests of the borough schools because it is important that the centres are ready for the start of the 2017/2018 academic year. “We hope that the students can look forward to a year full of hope, learning and discovery.”

Guardia puts bite on fake food-claim gang GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested seven British nationals, suspected of cheating Spanish hotels out of 60 million euros through phony claims of food-poisoning. Most of the hotels which fell prey to the scam are located in the Balearic Islands, especially Mallorca. And last year alone, there were 400 such claims, representing compensation adding up to nearly £9m. The British Government launched an awareness campaign in July, following a spate of complaints from the travel industry. And, after an investigation over several months, Guardia officers raided six homes and two commercial premises in Palma and Calviá, with computers and documents seized, bearing a wealth of material, said one.” Seven individuals were arrested on suspicion of being members of a gang, specialising in fraudulent, food-poisoning claims. Among them were 59-yearold mother Debbie Cameron and her heavilypregnant daughter, Laura Joyce, 28, believed to be the two ringleaders. They were taken into custody, although Mrs Cameron has since been released. The network, operating mainly in Mallorca, had “sales agents”, who were sent out to local hotels in search of tourists, offering to help them process the claim and explaining what documents to produce. But the ring’s activities also extended to other popular destinations, where the sector was cheated out a further 10m euros or so. Debbie Cameron, a wellknown figure on the island, runs a website called “Rich Mum”, which is tagged: “Have Fun. Make Money. Do Good”. She describes herself as
being “a mission-driven, serial entrepreneur”. Maria Salom, the government’s delegate in the Balearics, provided details of last week’s “Operation Claims” raid. It was conducted with assistance from the Hotel Business Federation of Mallorca (FEHM) and the UK Government, whose Ambassador, Simon Manley, visited the island in April to address the issue. Salom said there were 160 food poisoning claims filed by British travellers to Mallorca in 2015, for a combined compensation of £3m (3.3m euros). The following year, there were nearly 400 similar claims, worth £8m (8.7m euros) in total. “These claims have also been taking place in other parts of Spain,” said Salom, who hoped the Mallorca raid would serve as a “deterrent”. The arrests came nine days after UK officials stripped the licence from Allsure Ltd, a claims management company from Preston Lancashire, following an investigation by the British Government’s Claims Management Regulator (CMR). It found that the company “had encouraged holidaymakers to fabricate, or embellish, symptoms of gastric illness to get compensation. Further evidence showed that the

firm had used deceptive sales scripts, exaggerating expected pay-outs to entice consumers”. The CMR added in a press release: “The action taken against Allsure Ltd is the latest in a series of moves by the Government to crackdown on fake sickness claims. It follows concerns from the travel industry of a surge in insurance claims for gastric illnesses, such as food-poisoning, being brought by British holidaymakers.” In July, the British TWO workmen, aged 30 and 40, died, tragically, after a south-bound lorry smashed through the TF-1 central barrier and collided, head-on, with their van and several other vehicles, all heading towards Santa Cruz. The incident happened at 5pm last Thursday, near the Guimar tunnel, when the lorry driver suffered a blow-out and was unable to stop his truck from crashing through the central barrier. Fire-fighters cut one man from the van, who was already dead, while his companion, who had been thrown from the vehicle, was rescued by fire-fighters. He was resuscitated at the scene, but died in hospital. Incredibly, just one other person was injured in the
government launched an awareness campaign, warning tourists that they could face prosecution at home and abroad if found to have lodged bogus sickness claims. Mallorca’s hotel industry association had been complaining since 2013 about a type of fraud which, typically, concerns allinclusive travel packages. Holiday-makers are persuaded by claimsmanagement firms to file false complaints against the company which organised
the trip, alleging that the hotel meals made them ill. The only medical evidence required is a pharmacy receipt for medication to treat stomach trouble. And since it is hard to prove that the client did not get sick, and, faced with high legal fees if the case goes to court, the tour operator accepts the claim. It then passes on the cost to the Spanish hotel, as per its contract, in which the latter accepts responsibility for all damages. The holiday-maker is given a full refund for the cost of the trip, while the intermediaries take a fee. Mallorca hotel industry leaders noticed a rise in food-poisoning claims by British tourists in 2014, following a change to consumer arbitration legislation in the UK. Under British law, claims against travel operators may be lodged up to three years after the trip took place. Already, though, some claims-management firms will be worried sick themselves because of the treatment dished out to Allsure Ltd.

smash, which forced the north-bound motorway lanes to close for hours. A crane had to be summoned to remove the lorry from the road. Now, though, a big
question mark hangs over the central barrier, because its sole purpose is to maintain road safety by keeping vehicles in their respective motorway lanes, whatever happens.

An 855m-euro fraud, and nobody’s guilty! AN investigation into the ERE scandal, Spain’s biggest public-money fraud in history, is now into its fifth year. But the authorities have yet to prosecute a single person, or even recover any funds! Judges have heard how a staggering 855 million euros from the EU was siphoned away, illegally, to a string of individuals and companies during 2000 and 2010. The money, intended for retired workers and struggling companies, was taken by thousands of politicians, businessmen and town-hall workers. So far, 275 people have been quizzed during the extensive probe, which has had five judges, on different occasions, presiding over the case. Those questioned include senior political figures, including former
Junta Presidents Manuel Chaves (pictured) and Jose Antonio Grinan, who were called to give evidence before the investigating judges. But the investigation has been handicapped by political in-fighting,
personal feuds and the deaths of some of those accused. Chaves claimed to have no idea that his Employment Ministry was syphoning tens of millions fraudulently every year for a decade. And
Grinan, his successor, in 2009, also claimed to know nothing about the fraud. However, he did admit that there was a failure to bring in controls, saying: “There was no grand plan, but there was great fraud.”
Silent ‘sex-abuse’ cabbie
THE National Police arrested a Puerto de la Cruz taxi driver for, allegedly, sexuallyabusing an EasternEuropean tourist.
The incident took place back in July, and, according to the victim’s statement, she got into the taxi in the La Paz area to take her back to her hotel, and admits she was a little tipsy. She said the cabbie offered
to help put on her seat belt, and, in doing so, fondled her breasts. He then grabbed the passenger’s head and pushed it to his private parts, but the woman managed to push him off, jump out of the car and run off.
With the information she provided to the National Police in a denuncia, officers traced the taxi driver and took him to the police station. But he refused to give a statement, and the case was handed over to the judicial authorities.
Road-death figures are simply not
TRADITIONALLY, summer is the busiest time of the year on Spanish roads, and this year’s road-death toll was 224 fatalities in July and August. Spain’s DGT traffic department reported that there were 224 deaths in July and August, which was 31 fewer than in 2016, and a 12% decrease from the same period the previous year. Throughout July, there were 121 fatalities from 110 accidents, while August registered 103 people dead from 96 accidents. Spanish Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido said: “The data presented, despite being better than last summer, is not sufficient with the death of a single person in a traffic accident.”
Top airline pilots on a token strike THOMAS Cook airline pilots, many of whom fly to Spain and the Canary Islands from British regional airports, carried out a 12-hour strike last Friday. Those pilots who are members of the British Airline Pilots’ Association (Balpa), voted to strike and walked out, although the company insisted that all flights were operating. It is understood by the union to be the first UK pilots’ strike for nearly 50 years, and that it was simply a token stoppage so that passengers were hardly inconvenienced. According to the Balpa, its pilots have seen a deterioration in their terms and conditions, as well as real-term pay-cuts. And even though they have been offered a 4% pay rise over two years, they felt they had to make a stand with this action.

What a choker for rowdy plane thug
11 CW
Heaps of hash unearthed MORE than 100kg of hashish were found on Monday afternoon on a building plot in Parque de la Reina.
The cache was found when a JCB driver, clearing rubble, unearthed various bundles covered in plastic. A curious neighbour, who opened one of the bundles and discovered it contained drugs, notified the authorities immediately. Guardia Civil officers took charge of the investigation and brought in sniffer dogs, which searched the site for several hours, but found no more bundles. The ongoing investigation is now centred on locating the owner of the plot, and how long the drugs have been concealed there. From their condition, it is believed that it could be several years.
App-scam warning for Zara shoppers
Loud-mouthed passenger restrained by silver-haired saviour
AN aggressive man, causing mayhem during a late-night, Ryanair flight from Girona to Luton, was virtually choked by a fellow passenger as he attempted to disembark.
An online video has surfaced, showing the moment the drunken passenger, who was causing trouble aboard the plane throughout the flight, was held in a stranglehold. He had been making a nuisance of himself, singing loudly with headphones on, and irritating the other passengers, despite repeated warnings from stewards. As the plane touched down, the man got up from his seat and tried to push past the cabin crew, demanding that they get out of his way. At this point, the silverhaired traveller rose to the occasion and restrained the man in a headlock until he dropped to the floor, to the
cheers of other passengers. Others shouted words of encouragement, complimenting his bravery and calling him a hero. Dean Whiteside, 26, who recorded a video of the incident on his mobile, said the drunkard had been causing issues throughout the flight, before he was finally confronted after the plane touched down at Luton. Dean added: “He was making a nuisance of himself. It was a late flight and everyone was tired. He was rubbing people up the wrong way and the stewardess spent about an hour telling him; ‘You’re going to need to be quiet or I’ll call the police.’” When the plane finally landed, at about 11pm, the police were called to deal with the thug. But not before he tried to push his way past the cabin crew, shouting: “Get out of my face.” At this point, the unnamed hero jumps from his aisle and apprehends the man, one passenger saying:
“You’re a powerful b******, doing that, man.” Dean added: “I could see it brewing up, which is why I got my phone out, ready to film it. The guy was lifeless in his arms, like a rag doll.” The incident followed Ryanair’s call on UK airports to enforce a twodrink limit, after it was revealed the number of passengers arrested for drunken behaviour has increased by half. The budget airline has already banned customers from drinking dutyfree alcohol on flights in response to the rise, which has taken place over the last year. It has also stopped people flying from Glasgow and Manchester to Alicante and Ibiza from bringing any alcohol on board the aircraft at all to improve behaviour. The company is now urging airports to ban the sale of alcohol before 10am, and to limit the number of drinks per boarding pass to a maximum of two.
A PUBLIC warning has been issued by National Police about a WhatsApp messaging scam, offering bogus 150euro coupons for fashion shop Zara throughout its Spanish branches. These include a number of the company’s stores in Tenerife, including the ones in Costa Adeje’s Siam Mall and Los Cristianos, and those in Santa Cruz and La Laguna. A message circulating through the app promises a gift voucher for that sum to spend in the highstreet store, in exchange for handing over personal details. But investigators say the
scammers simply want to add the data to malware, or use it to charge people for premium text messages. Police used the hashtag #NoPiques (don’t take the bait) on Twitter to spread the word, in a bid to prevent shoppers falling for the scheme. It is not the first time con artists have used WhatsApp. A few months ago, police alerted the public to a hoax that promised casting on TV shows Big Brother or The Voice. In fact, it was a ruse to get people to hand over their personal information, or call costly hotlines. Giant Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona was also targeted a year ago, when fraudulent messages, circulated through the app, offered 250-euro vouchers to spend in its stores.

Drinkers’ terrorist scare is unfounded
Dog uncovers second corpse
A MAN walking his dog in the El Saladar area of Alicante got the shock of his life when it sniffed out what was virtually a skeleton, just 300 metres from where it had also found human remains in January. But police sources say the two corpses are not connected, and forensic tests are being performed to determine the identity and cause of death. National Police officers discovered the corpse, buried in a rocky area, about 30 metres from the shore. Firemen (pictured), were called to help excavate the human remains. An almost-complete skeleton, 1.5m long, was recovered, despite being in an advanced state of deterioration. The remains found in January were more than a century old, and there were no DNA traces remaining.
English demand for airports
UNIONS say the Government wants to force Spanishspeaking controllers and pilots to speak in English at airports handling more than 50,000 flights a year. They say it could affect safety.
Killed with weeding hoe
IGNACIO Javier, a 50-year-old resident in Teror, Gran Canaria, died in Doctor Negrín Hospital, following injuries he sustained in a bar fight on 25th August, when he was hit over the head with a weeding hoe. The suspect, 25-year-old Nacho SG, was arrested after the fight, and the charge changed from assault to murder after the victim, who had been in intensive care for the past week, finally passed away. Police have not stated what provoked the fight because the investigation is still ongoing.
La Tejita beach drowning
A GERMAN aged 66, who defied last Friday’s red-flag, no-bathing warning at La Tejita beach, drowned after being hit by a big wave. But his wife, who accompanied him, was able to scramble back to the shore unharmed. A lifeguard pulled the unconscious man from the sea, and began performing CPR on him. But when paramedics took over, they could only confirm his death.
PEOPLE enjoying a drink outside a Spanish nightspot feared they had been targeted by terrorists, when a car careered off the road and ploughed into them. The incident, which happened in the southern city of Huelva, followed last month’s tragedy, when 13 people were killed as a van rammed into crowds in Barcelona. A terrorist cell was responsible for the attack, in the Las Ramblas area.
On this occasion, though, terrorists were definitely not involved, and there were no fatalities. But two men, 18 and 31, were taken to hospital with injuries, and authorities said several people suffered panic attacks. The driver is believed by police to have driven his car into the pedestrians to avenge a fight he’d had. Enrique Gavino, Huelva City Council’s Citizen Security chief, said: “People suffered panic attacks because they understood that there was a vehicle involved, and we are in a sensitive situation.” A video, recorded by a witness, shows the black car
in the middle of the street after the incident. People gathered around it and began throwing chairs and other furniture at the driver, before dragging him out of the vehicle. He is then seen trying to make a run for it. Police officers arrested the man, but gave no further details on the charges he faces, or even his name. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old was killed in Alicante, and two other teenagers were injured when a drunkdriver, who tested positive for both drugs and alcohol, crashed into them. The two youngsters were taken to hospital.

Embassy man’s Brexit mission TIM Hemmings, the British Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission, will visit Tenerife on Wednesday, 18th October, to discuss Brexit, in particular, and what effects it might have on expats here. Mr Hemmings, accompanied by Charmaine Arbouin, Consul for the Canaries, will travel to Adeje in the morning and to Puerto de la Cruz in the early afternoon, to meet with residents, regular visitors and swallows. Adeje has been asked by the British Consulate to help host the public
event, so there will be an open workshop/talk in the Cultural Centre’s Aula Magna. Prior to that, however, he will meet briefly with Adeje Council representatives, and a press briefing will also be held. An Adeje Council spokesperson said: “Mr Hemmings is the Embassy’s secondin-command, and, as such, this will be an important visit for our British community. “There are so many people with so many questions on Facebook and social media, so this is their chance to ask someone who might actually have relevant Brexit information and/or answers!”

treatment. The incident caused a huge, south-bound traffic jam on the motorway.
A Spanish court had ordered Dali to be exhumed in July at Martinez’s request, a ruling which was highly controversial. A large, stone slab had to
be removed so forensic scientists could access the embalmed body and take samples. In their statement on Wednesday, the Dali Foundation said they were unsurprised by the discovery. “There was no indication from the very beginning that this paternity claim had any veracity,” it said.
Martínez’s lawyer, Enrique Blanqes, said he would not comment until he had read the forensic report. The 61-year-old Martinez (pictured left) said her mother, a maid at one of Dali’s homes in Port Lligat, had a clandestine relationship with the artist. She has been attempting to prove that Dali is her father for more than a decade.

Britain’s biggest fatberg lives under Whitechapel
All systems go for this jetset worker
A “FATBERG”, said to be the biggest-ever in Britain, which weighs in at 130,000kg and stretches more than 850ft, has been discovered under the Whitechapel streets. The monstrosity, comprising wet-wipes, nappies, fat and oil, and longer than two full-sized football pitches, end to end, has plugged the Victorian sewers. Engineers are now waging war against this horrendous
lump, using high-pressure hoses to dislodge the muck, which will then be sucked up into a fleet of tankers. Matt Rimmer, Thames Water’s head of waste networks, said: “This fatberg is up there with the biggest we’ve ever seen. It’s a total monster, and it’s taking a lot of manpower and machinery to remove because it has set hard. Basically, it’s like trying to break up concrete. “It is frustrating, because these situations are totally avoidable and caused by fat, oil and grease being washed down sinks, and wipes

flushed down the loo.” The last monster fatberg, which was Britain’s biggest until now, was discovered in Kingston-upon-Thames, south-west London, in 2013. The new blockage is being attacked by an eight-strong crew, using high-powered jet hoses to break up the mass before sucking it out with tankers, which take it away for disposal at a recycling site in Stratford. Inspections by CCTV camera shows the 47in high by 27in wide sewer, 11.5ft below the ground, to be totally blocked. And work will continue throughout September
until the sewer is clear. Mr Rimmer added: “We check our sewers routinely, but these things can build up really quickly and cause big problems with flooding, as the waste gets blocked. “It’s fortunate in this case that we’ve had to close off only a few parking bays to get to the sewer. Often, we have to shut roads entirely, which can cause widespread disruption, especially in London.” Thames Water spends around £1m a month clearing blockages from its sewers, all caused by such items as fat, wipes, nappies, cotton-buds, sanitary

products and condoms. The company has launched a new campaign called “Bin it - don’t block it”, in a bid to reduce the amount of rubbish deposited in sinks and toilets. Mr Rimmer said: “When it comes to preventing fatbergs, everyone has a role to play. Yes, a lot of the fat comes from food outlets, but the wipes and sanitary items are far more likely to be from domestic properties.” He added: “The sewers are not an abyss for household rubbish, and our message to everyone is clear: please ‘Bin it - don’t block it’.”
Wheelie big decision Arona cops pounce on kids with drugs
ARONA police have increased their drug control over minors in the municipality, and not only through their extra presence in schools for the new year. They are also monitoring public areas with the Canine Unit (UCPP), which, last weekend, detected substances on four teenagers, one with more than 100gms of hashish. This case has been referred to the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office. The checks took place in Guaza, La Camella and Las Americas on Saturday afternoon and into the night, and all the minors were over 14. In such cases, the youngsters are taken home by officers, who inform their parents or legal guardian about the law concerning minors aged under-18. This states that the parents are jointly liable.
R Y A N A I R customers will have to pay 5.50 euros for priority boarding from 1st November, if they want to carry a wheelie bag on board.
And the airline will also axe the two free bags in the cabin, unless they pay for priority boarding. All other passengers will be allowed to take just one smaller bag on board. Their larger wheelie bags will be put in the hold, free of charge,
at the boarding gate. The company, which claims the current policy causes flight delays through a shortage of overhead-cabin space, will compensate by increasing the checked-in baggage allowance from 15kg to 20kg. It will also reduce the fee from 38 to 28 euros, to encourage travellers to put their luggage in the hold. Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s chief marketing officer, said: “These bag-policy changes will cost Ryanair more than 50m euros a year in reduced, checkedbag fees.
“However, we believe offering bigger bags at reduced fees will encourage more customers to consider checking-in a bag, which will reduce the high volume of customers we have with two carry-on bags at the boarding gates. “This is causing flight delays, through the large numbers of gate-bag and cabin-bag offloads.” Priority boarding costs 5.50 euros at the time of booking, but it can be added on for another 1.05 euros, up to one hour before the scheduled departure

Facebook stung by Spanish regulator
SOCIAL network Facebook has been fined 1.2m euros by the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) for breaking laws concerning the use of its users’ personal data. The agency said the global social network had been compiling, storing and helping itself to user information for advertising purposes, without prior authorisation. Facebook, which says it “respectfully disagrees” with the agency’s decision, plans to appeal against the penalty. An official statement said: “As we informed the AEPD, it is the users who decide what information they want to add to their profile and share with others, such as their religion.” It added that it did not use that information to show specific advertisements to its users. According to the agency ruling, Facebook has obtained information about the ideology, sex, religious beliefs, personal tastes
and navigation of its users, without securing “unequivocal consent” initially. The AEPD believes the tech giant has committed two “serious” infractions and one “very serious” infraction of Spain’s data-protection law, costing Facebook two fines of 300,000 euros for the former, and one of 600,000 euros for the latter. The probe found that the US firm, which has more than two billion users throughout the world, does not, “exhaustively nor clearly”, give information about the data that will be collected, and how it is used, simply giving several examples instead. According to the agency’s findings, the social network collects other data deriving from the interaction between users of the site and third-party websites, without them being able to see, easily, the information Facebook gathers about them; nor how it will be used. The agency also found that Facebook’s privacy policy contains “generic and unclear expressions”, forcing users to access a number of differ-
ent links to get to it. It also says the social network makes imprecise references to how data collected will be delivered, in such a way that the user is not conscious of the data collection carried out by company; nor of its storage. The AEPD also confirmed that users are not informed that their information will be collected, via the use of cookies, when they visit pages not on the Facebook site, but which contain the social network’s “Like” button. The regulator also argues that the personal data of users are not completely deleted when they are no longer useful. And even when the user requests a deletion explicitly, it doesn’t happen immediately. The giant US company’s statement added: “Facebook meets European Union dataprotection law from our centre in Ireland. “We are open to continue discussing these issues with the AEPD while we work with the Irish Data Protection Agency, and we prepare for the new 2018 European Union regulations.”

Catalonia chief is standing firm CARLES Puigdemont, the First Minister of Catalonia, has insisted that only the Catalan Parliament, “the seat of popular sovereignty”, can now suspend his regional government from power. “There is no other court or political body that can do so”, he said in his message to Catalans (pictured) on the eve of Monday’s annual Diada Day celebrations. And Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau is backing him all the way. Puigdemont added that the new independence referendum, for which his government has called to be held on 1st October, is legal “according to the laws of the Parliament of Catalonia” and that Madrid had rejected all their efforts at dialogue. He was demonstrating the loyalty of Catalans, following Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s pledge that he would do what he saw as his duty, to prevent the vote from happening. Last week, Spain’s Constitutional Court suspended the Catalan referendum law, after accepting a central-government challenge to its legality.
The Public Prosecutor has filed criminal charges against all the Puigdemont’s government members, together with the Speaker of the Catalan parliament. Soon after Puigdemont published his message, Deputy First Minister Oriol Junqueras appeared on an evening politics show to answer questions from the presenter and audience members.
Asked about what would happen if the Constitutional Court suspended him from office, he also argued, like the First Minister, that the only “will” he now represents is that of the Catalan people. Junqueras said the highest law applicable in Catalonia currently was not the Spanish Constitution and statutes, but “international law”.
Prosecutor’s warns the top police chiefs C A T A L O N I A’ S Public Prosecutor’s Office has warned that any public servant or citizen helping to prepare the “illegal” referendum vote will be liable to criminal investigation for contempt of court, abuse of authority and misuse of public funds. It added that officers must, “urgently”, prepare reports and statements on
any activities they suspect of being related to the referendum, and inform the PPO of these activities. The three Catalonia police chiefs - Guardia Civil, National Police and Catalan’s regional police (the Mossos) - have been given their instructions in person by the prosecutor. They were ordered to investigate and prevent any acts related to the preparation or organisation of the Catalan referendum, after being reminded of their constitutional function as judicial police: they must follow judges’ orders! Similar meetings took
place yesterday (Thursday) in the Catalonia provinces of Barcelona, Tarragona, Lérida and Gerona. When asked about these orders, Catalan government spokesman Jordi Turull, himself under investigation on criminal charges of contempt of court, abuse of authority and misuse of public funds, said the administration’s “absolute” policing priority was terrorism, and not stopping the referendum. He added: “The fight against terrorism is the priority when it comes to mobilising Catalan and European police officers.”
He added there was no legal mechanism for Europe to eject a part of its territory, and that Catalonia would continue to use the euro when it secedes. A second bill, relating to the mechanics of secession, was also passed by the Catalan Parliament. But it will, probably, be suspended by the Constitutional Court this week. Last Thursday, European Parliament President Antonio Tajani said Catalonia had to obey the Spanish Constitution, reiterating that if the region seceded, it would be out of the European Union. Some small territories have signed monetary agreements with the EU to be able to use the euro as an official currency. But only Kosovo and Montenegro use it without such a deal, as a de facto currency. Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, said: “Democracy has died in Catalonia.” And Rajoy added: “There will be no selfdetermination referendum. The Government of Spain must, firstly, honour its mandate to follow and enforce the law.” He argued that Spain was a country that “co-exists
in peace, and according to a series of rules that were agreed upon by everyone”. Rajoy added: “There is no power capable of lessening the democratic will of the Spanish people, or, indeed, any kind of alternative legitimacy.” The defence of national sovereignty was, he said, the second reason to enforce the law. “We all decide about things that belong to us all; our country in this case.” He said the Spanish nation “stems from the will and the feelings of generations and generations of men and women, who have wanted to live together in their undeniable and enriching plurality”. Rajoy stressed: “Neither the President of the Government, nor Parliament, nor any other power, can, unilaterally, undo that decision, which falls on each and every member of the Spanish nation. “As a result, this consultation will not take place, regardless of the intentions to impose one in a rushed, sloppy and illegal manner.” Leading Catalan separatist organisation, the ANC, said on Sunday that 400,000 people had registered for Monday’s big Diada Day protest, which this year was a giant cross in the streets of central Barcelona, with participants all putting on yellow T-shirts, just before the key moment, after 5pm. Previous years had seen a giant “V”, a human chain across the region, or a large, yellow, triangular pointer, with the route organised around thematic spaces representing “democracy”, “social justice” or “diversity”. The official slogan for this year’s event was “the Diada of yes”, and the police estimated that up to one million people turned out for the colourful protest march. During the march, a minute’s silence was held for the 16 victims of last month’s Barcelona terror attacks. But Rajoy and King Felipe were jeered during a subsequent rally, held in memory of the victims.

Pound is boosted by UK-growth forecast By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks. Latest currency news Over the last two weeks, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has recovered from an eight-year low of 1.0745 euros, to return to trading in the region of 1.0981. During the same period, EUR/GBP has edged from £0.9306 to £0.9098, but EUR/USD has recovered from lows of $1.1840 to $1.2013. What’s been happening? Once again, there’s been plenty of news driving currency-market movement
over the last couple of weeks. While the US has been battered by extreme weather conditions, causing concern for the nation’s economic outlook, and weighing on Federal Reserve interestrate-hike expectations, the pound has been responding to Brexit-based uncertainty, and predominantlydisappointing, domestic data. Last week’s European Central Bank (ECB) interest-rate decision also caused something of a stir. Although the central bank made no changes to monetary policy, it
did positively revise its growth forecasts for the Eurozone, and indicate that decisions on the tapering of quantitative easing will be made in October. This was enough to send the euro broadly higher. However, the common currency’s gains against the pound weren’t long-lived, with Sterling benefiting from a surprising boost at the end of the first week of September, as the UK’s third-quarter growth estimate from the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) came in at 0.4% - twice the rate of growth recorded in
the second quarter. According to NIESR official Amit Kara: “If, indeed, economic growth is sustained at the 0.4-0.5% level, we prescribe a 25 basis point increase in Bank Rate in the first quarter of 2018, to reverse some of the emergency stimulus that the Bank of England injected into the economy last August, in response to the EU referendum result.” What do you need to look out for? After the excitement of last week’s ECB interest-rate decision, it’s the Bank of England’s (BoE) turn to trigger currency-market movement. The tone the central bank takes at this month’s gathering may alter slightly, depending on the results of this week’s UK inflation and employment figures. While the impact of the inflation report is more difficult to predict, amid bets that rising inflation still won’t push the BoE into raising interest rates,
an uptick in UK average earnings would help alleviate some of the pressure on UK consumers, and could lend the pound support. High-profile, economic reports from the Eurozone are in short supply this week, but speeches from ECB officials could unsettle the euro. Of course, investors will also be looking ahead to the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate decision on the 20th. If the Fed avoids making any references to a December, interest-rate adjustment, the US dollar may slide, giving the euro the opportunity to advance. At Currencies Direct, we’re here to talk currency whenever you need us, so get in touch if you want to know more about the latest news, or how it could impact your currency transfers. EU driving licences: the validity in Spain By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
TO determine whether a driving licence, issued by one of the EU countries (and Lichtenstein, Norway and Iceland), is valid in Spain, we must consider the Drivers’ General Regulation (Reglamento General de Conductores). It says: 1. Driving licences issued in any EU country are valid in Spain, under the conditions they were issued in their place of origin. The proviso is, of course, that the age required for driving shall correspond to that required to obtain the equivalent Spanish permit. 2. However, those licences which are restricted, or have been suspended
or withdrawn in any EU country, will not be valid for driving in Spain. 3. The holder of a driving licence issued in one of these countries, who has acquired residence in Spain, will be subject to the Spanish provisions regarding its period of validity, and allocation of a points credit. In the case of a licence not subject to a certain validity, the holder must renew it in two years, after establishing his normal residence in Spain. 4. A driving-licence-holder from another EU country, now resident in Spain, may ask at the Jefatura de Tráfico to exchange it for an equivalent Spanish licence. The Spanish Criminal Code states: “Whoever drives a motor vehicle or moped, in cases of loss of validity of the permit or licence, for total loss of the legally-assigned points, shall be punished by imprisonment for three to six months, or a ban of 12-24 months, or will work to benefit the community for 31-90 days. The same penalty shall be imposed on a person who drives, having
been banned legally, and who drives a motor vehicle or moped without ever having obtained a driving licence.” Many drivers are aware that they have been fined, and, as a result have had points withdrawn. And they know,
not because the fine has come to them but because the sanction amount has been seized from their bank account. They were never notified of the fine, which was made by the Administration, through publication of edicts.
Moreover, many people are unaware that the Administration has withdrawn their authorisation. Thus, their defence would, basically, focus on a lack of knowledge (ignorance) of that circumstance, and whether or or not there was valid notification by the Administration. NOTE: The European Economic Area (EEA) is the area in which the Agreement on the EEA provides for the free movement of persons, goods, services and capital within the European Single Market, including the freedom to choose residence in any country within this area. The EEA was established on 1st January 1994, when the EEA Agreement began. Basically, it includes all EU countries, plus and Lichtenstein, Norway and Iceland. I’ve got this leg that was 70 grand and I still complain about it...” Later the journey allows the 4x4 drivers to discuss relationships and internet dating, as Vicky and Mary reveal they have both received unwanted attention. At the Linh Ung Monastery near Da Nang they help volunteers deliver meals to a local orphanage. But for Louise Halvey, who has progressive hearing loss, the pressure of socialising in a hearing group is taking its toll. Steve Brown is also struggling. At the beach, while many of the group head for the water, he’s left frustrated. “I don’t like being on the beach... I want my sunglasses, I would like to get changed, every single thing I need someone to pass to me.” Finally, the full moon lantern festival at Hoi An is the perfect place for reflection. Steve sums up: “If it wasn’t for the people that I’m with, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I’ve done.” Mary: “I’ve achieved something in my life, seen it through to end.” And Vicky: ‘I’ve been wrapped in cotton wool since the accident... so it’s nice to be able to do something on my own, and be the independent person I am.”

TV Choice How To Stay Young
Wednesday 20th September, BBC1, 21.00 Did you know we have two ages - our actual age and a body age - and scientists have discovered that our lifestyles affect how we age. Thanks to modern lifestyles many of us are ageing too fast and have a body age much higher than it should be. Dr Chris van Tulleken and Angela Rippon join some of the country’s leading health experts to turn around the lives of people whose bodies are much older than their actual age. Using the latest scientific research on ageing, the expert team will try to help volunteers by giving them a complete lifestyle overhaul that will bring their body age closer to their birth age in just 12 weeks. Working alongside the Institute For Ageing at Newcastle University the team has built the ambitious ageing lab, where they will be testing some the country’s worst offenders to get the most complete picture of how they are ageing. The results from these tests will give us their real body age, and allow us to give them a personal plan going forward. In episode one, we’ve invited a group of ordinary Brits to our anti-ageing lab to take part in one of Britain’s biggest ever ageing experiments to find out their true body age - and the results are shocking. Many of us are ageing much faster than we should be. One volunteer Kamini (pictured) discovers how being so lazy has made her body weak, putting decades on her age. Fifty year-old Alison finds out why modern life has made her so forgetful, and 51 year-old stress eater Tim has one of the worst results our scientists have ever seen, putting his life at serious risk. They’ll have just three months to get their body age down and closer to their birth age. But will they have succeeded when they re-face the tests in the ageing lab?
Tribes, Predators & Me
Thursday 21st September, BBC2, 21.00
Wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan journeys across Ethiopia to try to understand the true nature of Africa’s loathed and feared hyenas. Weighing up to 90 kilos and capable of killing lions, these are impressive and powerful carnivores. But why does Ethiopia have more hyenas than anywhere else in the world? Starting his journey in the capital he learns that hyenas are tolerated here because people believe hyenas ward off the devil. Travelling to the remote Omo Valley to meet a cattle-herding people called the Bodi, Gordon finds the attitudes here are starkly different, with local people destroying hyena dens in retaliation for attacks on their livestock. In an effort to ward of hyena, Gordon dares to sleep outside overnight. He also gets to know the Bodi people, learning how they survive. Finally, Gordon arrives in Harar, a medieval city with a reputation for having hundreds of hyenas. It is here that he meets hyena experts and learns that these often feared predators have a softer side. It leaves him with a better understanding of hyenas’ true nature - and how humans might be able to live with them in peace.

Teach My Pet To Do That ITV1, 20.00
CW
Entertaining, informative and charming Teach My Pet To Do That celebrates the hidden intellectual potential of our nations pets. We are a nation of animal lovers with over half of us owning some sort of pet. Watching funny and entertaining pet’s on line is a bit of a national obsession but rarely do we think our own pets are capable of such feats of brilliance. Teach My Pet To Do That will wipe away that misconception. Using only positive reinforcement training this series proves that any pet has the potential to be an internet superstar. The Teach My Pet, Pet School is a place where domesticated pets of all shapes, sizes and species enrol to be taught tricks that enrich the lives of animal and owner. This week, Alexander Armstrong opens the doors of his multispecies pet training school to welcome German Shepherd cross Declan and domesticated ferret Biscuit, to see if they can learn to ring a dinner bell to get their owners’ attention.

Motorcycle racer, lorry mechanic and speed lover Guy Martin joins the Williams Martini Racing team to see if he can make it as a member of the elite Formula 1 pit crew, who can change four tyres in an unbelievable 1.92 seconds. Guy lived, ate, travelled and worked with the pit crew at the recent 2017 Belgian Grand Prix, giving this programme an unprecedented insight into Formula 1. With never-before-seen camera angles and access to the normally secret team radio, this is every fan’s dream: F1 from the inside. Guy had to try and learn the split-second timing that sees 22 pit crew members perform 34 different actions without getting in each other’s way. He conducted more than 100 practice stops, including one where a last-minute call meant he didn’t have time to put on his gloves so he ended up handling the 100-degree tyre with a bare hand.

In this landmark film, Professor Stephen Hawking, engineer and radio astronomy expert Professor Danielle George and former student of Professor Hawking Christophe Galfard join forces to find out if, and how, humans can reach for the stars and relocate to different planets. Travelling the globe, they meet top scientists, technologists and engineers who are working to answer our biggest questions. Is there another planet out there that we could call home? How will we travel across the vast distances of space to get there? How will we survive the journey? And how will we set up a new human civilization on an alien world?

The fifth episode sees the air ambulance dispatched to a woman who has fallen downstairs and is struggling to breathe. On the trauma desk, Critical Care Paramedic Fay receives a call from a crew requesting the Air Ambulance attend a road accident, but with the only available helicopter on their way to the first patient, Fay faces a tough decision. In Staffordshire, grandmothers Helen and Julie (pictured L-R) have just started their 12-hour shift. They’re sent to a teenager who has been punched, and on their way to hospital they discover that he’s homeless. With many other services closed overnight, the work of a paramedic is increasingly about more than dealing with medical emergencies. When Helen and Julie spot the teenager on the street later in their shift, they try to get him some help from a shelter. While crew Ben and Sophie attend an elderly woman who has pressed her emergency button, reports of a hanging comes in to the control centre.

San Miguel de Abona Romería
The 24th San Miguel de Abona Romería (Harvest Fair) welcomes the ‘pilgrims’ who, every year, make this day the most festive and cheerful of all fiestas and fill the town streets with typical local customs and traditions. The celebration begins at the Church of St Michael the Archangel with a sung mass, followed by the procession which starts from the San Miguel Cooperative (CASMI) and includes carts and folk groups from San Miguel de Abona and neighbouring parts. Hundreds of people take part in the procession, which ends in the Square at St Michael’s Church and is followed by an open-air dance to band music.

A walk on the dark side... hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
AFTER one of the hottest summers for a while, maybe it’s time to cool things down, hair-wise, by darkening things a little. This year, chocolates and auburns are high on the list of musthave Winter colours in the salon. You don’t have to go to the full extent; mix in some warm hi-lites in soft shades of honey and caramel, giving you the look, but not draining your skin too much. Add in the lighter colours around your face, and keep the underneath darker for a more-natural look, never going more than two shades darker than
Get organised!
your natural colouring. It’s always better to warm up your colouring in the Winter months because your skin receives less sun; adding in colour will put back the gloss and shine to your hair, especially if it’s faded and dry looking.
Try to stay clear of anything too fake looking, ie dark browns and blacks, because these can be difficult to remove at later stages. Your darker colour should add to your look, not draw anything away. Always consult your stylist before making a drastic colour change.
Animal instincts By Carl pattison BRING out your wild side this Autumn/ Winter season, because all that is animal is going to be soooo hitting the stores in a massive way. From your original leopard print to farfetched fur colouring, adding animal-inspired pieces to your wardrobe is going to see you high in the fashion stakes. Feather trims and plumes, and synthetic, long, fur-adorned tops and jackets alike
have sprung into the stores, making this one of this season’s hottest looks. Added to jewellery, and even shoes, our homage to the Animal Kingdom is one of my favourite-ever looks. Of course, there’s no need at all to use real
fur; fake gives you the luxury without the cruelty, and can sometimes look better than Mother Nature herself. Don’t wear this look top to toe; add it into your collection, with stylish pieces, to really create a roar!
By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic
THE main reason a home can look untidy mostly boils down to not having the right storage! We all have “stuff ”, and there is no getting away from it. The fact is, it’s impossible, so we have to learn to live with it.
Take, for instance, the office area. We all have mountains of paperwork, especially here in Tenerife. These infamous and endless pieces of paper are handed to us, and most of us aren’t even sure what they are;
but we are all way too scared to throw anything away, “just in case”. You might have an actual office, or just a desk in the corner of the living room; either way, it’s a magnet to clutter, and can make the place look untidy. Then there are the wardrobes. They are supposed to take the bulk of our household clutter and hide it all away, but, if they are not designed properly, they may only be holding half of what they potentially could do. Now, I’m not saying your house should look like a showroom - far from it. A house is to be lived in, and should reflect the homeowner and his or her personality, but there is a lot to gain from a decluttered, well organised, lowmaintenance home; it makes living that little bit easier and stressfree. The only solution to these cluttered areas
is adequate storage, and getting the right design is crucial. We can often find ready-made pieces to fit our needs, but, sometimes, to make it work perfectly, made-to-measure and purpose-built is the way forward. This is more so in small apartments, where every inch counts. The word bespoke can sound daunting and expensive, but, actually, it’s not at all. It’s worth every penny, when end results are utilising awkward spaces, maximising storage, and staying in keeping with existing décor. Remember: less clutter makes a small space look bigger, so, whether it’s a fitted wardrobe, or a narrow little unit for some extra cupboard space, get them sorted by calling us for a free measure and quote on 6366 30187, or contact us at muebles. chic25@gmail.com, and you can see what we can do!

By Val Sainsbury BLADDER cancer isn't mentioned in the press as much as the “big” cancers, such as those of the breast, ovary, prostate, lung and skin.
This is mainly because breast cancer makes up 12% of cancer diagnoses, one-in-four Americans will have lung cancer in his or her lifetime, and 40-50% of those who reach the age of 65 will have some type of skin cancer. Bladder cancer comprises just 5% of all new cancers in America, yet it is still a large number of people who are affected. The American Cancer society expects nearly 80,000 new cases of bladder cancer in 2017, and it is still the fourth-mostcommon cancer found in men. Despite this, a larger
percentage of women diagnosed with bladder cancer are expected to die from it than men. This is most likely because the symptoms of bladder cancer can often be misconstrued for other conditions. What is bladder cancer? Sometimes, the cells in the bladder change, but this doesn't always result in cancer. Some of these include: non-cancerous conditions such as urinary tract infections (UTI) and kidney stones, and benign tumours such as papilloma or a fibroma. Unfortunately, these changes can lead to malignant tumours and cancer. Non-invasive This type only occurs in the cells of the urothelium (the lining of the urinary tract), and treatment is more likely to be successful. Invasive This occurs when cancer spreads to the connective tissues or bladder-wall
muscles. This will typically be seen in the later stages of bladder cancer. Treatments These vary depending on the grade, stage, and category of cancer, as well as on the individual. Currently, the primary methods of treatment for bladder cancer are: Surgery Immunotherapy Chemotherapy Radiation Surgery can be to remove just the tumour, or the tumour and a small part of the bladder. It can also be to remove the entire bladder, along with surgery to create a new way for your body to release urine. This could include either a catheter so you can urinate more normally, or a urostomy bag attached to your body. For most people, this can be difficult, both mentally and emotionally. Signs and symptoms Bladder cancer symptoms
are split into two groups: early and late. Early symptoms: 1. Blood in the urine (all the time, or intermittently) 2. Frequent need to urinate 3. Intense or sudden, urgent need to urinate 4. Difficulty urinating 5. Burning sensation or pain while urinating Late symptoms: 1. Loss of appetite 2. Weight loss 3. Anaemia 4. Fever 5. Change in bowel habits 6. Lump in the pelvis 7. Swelling in the legs, scrotum (for men) or vulva (for women) 8. Pain in the rectum, anus, pelvis, flank (side), above your pubic bone, or in your bones If you notice just one of these symptoms, talk to your doctor right away. Prevention It is far easier to prevent cancer than it is to treat it. While some risk factors, such as age, being caucasian, being male, or having a bladder-related birth defect are unchangeable, many of the other items that increase your chances of developing bladder cancer are related to toxins and toxic build up, in the body and bladder. This includes exposure
to environmental and occupational chemicals and toxins, exposure to radiation (especially from previous cancer treatments), having chronic bladder infections and irritations, as well as air pollution, pesticides, and certain cancer drugs and diabetes medications. Don’t smoke Smoking introduces thousands of cancercausing chemicals into your body. Not only should you not smoke, you should also avoid spending time around people who do. Drink lots of water Drinking plenty of water throughout your day dilutes your urine and increases urinary output. This means you will be regularly filtering and flushing toxins out of your kidneys, giving them less time to sit in your bladder and cause harm. Eat a variety of fruits and vegetables Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables ensures you will have a high intake of cancerfighting anti-oxidants. The fibre will help keep your bowel movements regular, and the anti-oxidants will destroy free-radicals before they can cause cancer. Try to choose organic, to further limit exposure to pesticides and toxins.

Many thanks!
R.I.P. Carmen 5/9/17
It is with the deepest regret that we announce the recent and very sudden passing of Carmen Penny.
WE would like to say a very big thankyou to The Royal Tenerife Country Club and Tenerife Properties for their generous donations of towels, sheets, cushions, sofas and furniture, all of which are extremely useful at the refuge. We really appreciate all the help we receive from our supporters, expecially with the ever-growing numbers
of dogs that arrive on a daily basis here. We have also had a large number of dogs brought into the refuge without microchips, or microchips that have not been updated with their owners’ information. This makes our work even harder, when trying to reunite dogs with their owners; so please do remember to keep your information updated. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets,
towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. A beautiful service to celebrate her life was held on Saturday in the chapel at Arona Cemetery. David and the family would like to thank the many dear friends who attended, and who have paid tribute to Carmen. Below is a translation, from Spanish, of just one of the numerous, heartfelt messages received.
Dearest friend You chose Valle San Lorenzo to anchor your dream in the world of antiques, and it was today, a day in September, in which you went without saying goodbye - because that is what you’re like - discreet, tireless, tenacious, sociable, a great Mum, and wife to a giant of a man … Carmen! Carmen was the soul and driving force of Aladdin’s Cave. I think she even worked in her sleep. Her job was her passion, and it’s where she met so many people who admired, respected and loved her, and now cry for her goodbye. JO, our Canarian Weekly designer, has been collecting coins over the last few months, to help raise money for Leukaemia Care UK, and has managed to get a place in the charity’s team, running in the 2018 London Marathon. She has started a “Brown Money Challenge”, in which she is asking people to donate their one, two and five-cent coins. They have been mounting up, and she’s been counting and banking as she goes. Canarian Weekly is helping her spread the word by getting readers to raise as much money as possible for such a noble cause. Any
donation, big or small, will be gratefully received, and Jo is playing her part by early-morning slogging around the roads, in a bid to build, gradually, her fitness levels. If you would like to drop off any coins at the OasisFm/ Canarian Weekly offices in La Chafiras, near popular bathroom company El Baño Barato, we are open MondayFriday, from 9am til 5pm. No counting necessary! You can also leave them at The Swan and Manhattan’s Bars in Los Cristianos, or ring 822 141 517, and Jo will arrange for them to be collected.

Cat's whiskers
HAVE you ever wondered what a cat's whiskers actually do besides tickling our faces at night? They are so valuable that, if they're cut off, a cat's ability to hunt and navigate can be affected. They’re so sensitive that they help cats to detect changes in the air current, which helps them get around in the dark, in much the same way we would hold out our arms and use our fingers to feel for objects. This ability also helps with hunting, as they detect the potential, swift movement of their prey. A cat also uses its muzzle whiskers to help determine whether it can fit through small gaps. These whiskers are, theoretically, about the same size as the cat's body width. So, if they can fit through a gap without bending, the cat should get through, although, if it's a bit tubby, this isn't always
the case! The whiskers above a cat's eyes help when it's hunting in grassy or bushy areas. They trigger a protective blink if there's something that might get in the eyes. Their whiskers can also reflect their mood. When they're hanging loosely on either side, the cats are probably relaxed. When they're scared or ready
for a battle, they're flat against their face to prevent damage, and when they're on alert or hunting, they're forward-facing, to help with prey detection. Adoptions Please consider adopting a kitten/cat from us. Contact us via our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com or ring/ Whatsapp Maria (English) on 6466 29129, seven days a week
9-6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm on 6712 82773. All kittens go on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. Mia and Manu If you like the thought of adopting an older kitten/ kittens, because you have young children or work long hours, consider fourmonth-old Mia and Manu.
Mia’s lost one eye due to an infection, which has been treated completely. This doesn't affect her abilities at all, and she is a playful, friendly, young girl. Manu is a very cuddly kitten. He loves to sit and be stroked all day! Both are used to being around other cats and dogs, so are a perfect addition to any family situation. To meet Mia and Manu, or for any other details, contact Oskana on Whatsapp 633606801. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.
Live Arico News
Dog of the week - Pikachu PIKACHU is just the sweetest young pup. He is only six kilos, so will suit your small home or apartment, and he is less than a year old. Can you give him a home, and your love? Please call Sue on 629 388102 for more information, and to arrange a meeting or no-obligation trial. Adopt don’t shop, is always the best policy! We need a van! Our van has died at the worst possible moment; the summer, when our shops are quiet. Isn’t it always the way? Although we dream of having one donated (dreams are good), realistically, if we can find a cheapish one, we will be happy. We need it for rescuing and moving our dogs around, so it’s quite urgent. If you know of one available, please get in touch. Upcoming events This evening (Friday, 15th September), we are back at the Top Square, San Blas, Golf del Sur. It’s been a while, so we will be going all-out to make it a belter! It will be hosted by Suzy q, and feature Colin Stevens’
Comedy Drag Show, Robbie Dominic, Kris the fireeater plus many more. See you there from 8pm. On Sunday, 24th September we have been invited onto the Mustcat on a private charter by the Globe Bar, Costa del Silencio. Come and join us for a three-hour sunset trip, leaving Las Galletas port at 6pm. The price is 35 euros, which includes paella and unlimited drinks. Call Sue on 629 388102 for your tickets, but be quick; we sold out last time. Showstoppers 2017 Yes, it’s almost that time again. Those uber-talented students of the Gillian Banks Theatre School in South Yorkshire are back to entertain you, with a show that’s bigger and better than ever before. Can this be possible? Well, you will have to come and see on Monday, 30th October at the Auditorium in Los Cristianos from 7pm - save the date. Tickets are already on sale from all three Live Arico charity shops, or from the
Cultural Centre reception. You can also book online at www.arona.org or call Sue on 629 388102. The proceeds will benefit not only Live Arico, but also Helping Hands and Amigos de Gillian Banks (Day Centre Guaidyl). Don’t miss it! Come and walk the doggies! Join the Live Arico dogwalking club on Saturday mornings from 11am. Our dogs absolutely love it, and you will, too. Send a Whatsapp to Eugenio on 633 717480 and he will meet you there. Happy trails! CD Marino
Top dogs bark and bite UNBEATEN Mensajero, our La Palma island neighbours, popped over on Wednesday afternoon and kept up their 100% record in a match dominated by CD Marino. The last 15 minutes of the first half was owned by Mensajero, whose ability to turn attacks into goals is why they are hot favourites for promotion. Mensajero relied on fast breaks, boosted by big, upfield kicks by keeper Garate. But the Marino defence were in fine form, and repelled the forwards, with centre-backs Carlos and Javi Saavedra forming a formidable barrier. Dani Lopèz was sure he had two early breakthroughs, but Carlos robbed him, before right-back
CD Marino 0 Mensajero 2
Nathan raced back deep to clear his halfchance. Nathan was making good progress himself with forward runs, feeding the ball to Nami, whose shot rebounded off the post. Captain Kevin Castro, who was again pulling
the strings in the Marino midfield, let rip with a long, speculative shot that whizzed over the bar like a rocket. Keeper Garate launched another skyscraper goal-kick, which fell to Lionel, who tried a neat lob from deep on the left and nearly suc-
ceeded. Mensajero were gradually waking up, and Yeray, who found himself free in space on the right, crashed a shot past David in the home goal just before the half-hour. Nami made a fool of visitor Pedro as he nutmegged him with a ball tucked between his legs, but his teammates saved his blushes. Mensajero’s killer blow came from a hotlydisputed penalty. Nathan made a good tackle on Dani Lopez in the box, but the forward went down and the ref pointed to the spot, Yeray converting the penalty. That could have caused Marino heads to drop for the second half, but they actually used the incident to fire them up. Fran Delgado cut down the left, put in a good
low cross, and Zeben connected with it, only to see the ball parried by the keeper at pointblank range. Kevin Castro’s inspiration was missed when he went off 10 minutes into the half. But replacement Ricky Vaca, a new addition to the squad, who was born in Bolivia and played in Lithuania, settled quickly. Camacho tried to open Marino up down the right wing, but Fran Delgado showed he is as good defending as attacking and cleared the danger. Nathan was always up for a bit of speed down the wing, cutting inside to attack a long ball from his defence. But he found Garate alert enough to clean up. Zeben had one of the better chances for Marino, shrugging off his markers, but he shot into the sidenetting. David had little to do in the home goal, but he reacted well to a couple of late
half-chances. Time was running out and Mensajero were content to sit back. Nathan had a late effort as Marino threw everything forward, his shot from outside the area clearing the bar. Not many teams will trouble Mensajero, who are strong and confident. Marino are learning quickly, but, as they discovered, they need to be more ruthless in front of goal. Marino won 2-1 at CD Vera in Almeria last Sunday. They were gifted an own-goal by Tana in the first minute and fought hard to keep the advantage. Andres tied the game after 14 minutes, but Marino were in no mood to fold. Young striker Nami, on a rich vein of form, put Marino back in front just before the break. And they held firm through the second half, with former Las Zocas keeper David Kikvidze making a solid, senior debut.
Still in the running… ARONA’S Travesia A Nado swimming challenge, planned for Sunday across the Las Vista bay in Los Cristianos, has been called off because the local council fears “adverse weather”. Forecasts are not suggesting conditions
will turn, and it has been hinted that there’s a possibility of microalgae infiltrating the area. But Arona’s Carrera Nocturna night race is still on next Saturday (23rd Sept), so it’s everyone uphill to Arona town for a 8.30pm start on a circuit around the municipality’s historic headquarters. Night running always has an extra edge of excitement, and the 7km route will be well-
marshalled, with small lights on head-bands helping to illuminate the way. Entry is 10 euros, and you can sign up at www.gesportcanarias. com and find full rules, routes, and other details. Numbers are limited, but even if you are not taking part, it will attract a large crowd of supporters and friends, so pop along and give them some encouragement.

CD Tenerife
The late, great show By Colin Kirby
IT wasn’t safe to blink at the Heliodoro stadium on Sunday, where we saw non-stop action, goals… and more twists than an Agatha Christie plot!
The draw was a fair result, especially as Tenerife had captain Suso sent off with 25 minutes left and his team trailing 0-1.
CD Tenerife 2 Granada 2 Coach Pep Marti surprised the 13,367 crowd by starting with Brian Martin up front, rather than Italian hot-shot Longo. Tayron, who sparked the best early moves from Tenerife, cleared the bar with the first proper chance. Granada were a physical side, Victor Diaz hacking down Brian Martin. But the young forward showed resilience, which is all
part of his learning curve. Adrian Ramos was the visitors’ danger-man, outstretching Aitor Sanz’s boot to open the scoring after 17 minutes from a Pedro corner. The Tenerife midfield wasn’t quite sparking, and Juan Carlos was quiet on the left. His only good break saw him marshalled wide by the Granada defence to restrict him to a shot past the post.
Suso tried to release Tayron for a shot, but he couldn’t hit the target, either. A hot, early afternoon threatened to boil over when a wild tackle by Ramos on Aitor Sanz infuriated his skipper. Suso got himself involved with some pushing and shoving by the team benches, and picked up a needless booking. Martin is working hard to cement a regular starting spot, and his smart turn and overhead kick wasn’t far from equalising before the break. Longo was brought on for Juan Carlos at the restart, which ignited a thrilling second half. But Suso was not destined to witness it from the pitch. There’s no doubting his passion, but a clumsy assault on his marker deserved a second yellow card, and dismissal. The home troops dug deep, and a long ball into the Granada box was headed on by Jorge and
finished coolly by Longo for the equaliser. Malbasic, who had already replaced Martin, was working well with the Italian: two strong, skilful strikers, and a sight to gladden all home fans. And there was better to come. Longo showed his close control to turn a defender and release a perfect pass up to Malbasic. The big striker pulled the ball wide of the keeper for a terrific finish and the lead, with just a minute left of normal time. As we all know, though, football can be a cruel game, and, deep into injury-time, a high ball from Granada appeared to offer little threat. Jorge leapt to clear it with a glancing header, but his control wasn’t spot-on and the ball dipped into the back of the net for an own-goal, and a point for Granada. It was an agonising end! But at least Tenerife demonstrated that they have a squad worthy of challenging for promotion this season.

IT should have been the celebration of a new chapter for Tenerife, but their first game at San Isidro ended in defeat. It was good to see them welcome a 600 crowd for the match, and action was even until Ida struck after 24 minutes to edge Levante ahead. Maria Jose Perez, relishing her return to a Tenerife shirt, equalised just before half-time. But a second-
half charge brought little reward for the home team, and Charlyn popped up after 62 minutes to net the winner. Sadly, one draw and a defeat was not the start Tenerife had anticipated, but it’s early days, and they are in 10th position. This weekend is blank for the seniors, with the next game at Zaragoza the following weekend. But player-development is still growing, and the B team face San Marcos at El Medano on Saturday, kickoff 6.30 pm.
CD Tenerife captain Suso has been given a five-match ban for being sent off and insulting the referee, during Sunday’s home draw against Granada. The La-Laguna-born player has always been a crowd-pleaser, his pride for the shirt so obvious. But he tends to let his exuberance boil over sometimes. It’s a blow for the team, and coach Pep Marti looked deeply frustrated
by his actions when he had to comment on the dismissal at the aftermatch press conference. But Suso’s biggest punishment is that, even as skipper, he will have a real fight on his hands to regain his standing in a senior squad blessed with hungry, talented, attacking players. “Hot” balls in the randomdraw machine should be a thing of the past. But cynics were given plenty of ammunition when Tenerife were drawn away in the King’s Cup for the 10th consecutive time. Their reward for the 3-0 demolition of Rayo
Vallecano is a secondround tie at Cordoba on Wednesday (20th Sept). The nightmare is compounded by a league fixture on the same ground this Sunday night, just three days before the Cup clash. If you listen carefully, you will hear someone in the Spanish FA’s corridors of power having a huge chuckle. It is believed that mainland teams do not fancy midweek night games in Tenerife. And this double date in Cordoba will involve a few nights’ stay-over for a bigger-than-usual Tenerife squad.

Unshockable, unstoppable! WAS there a shock on the cards as Sundowners’ Kim took the first leg off Scruffy Macs’ Telf? Answer: An emphatic No!
The defending champions showed their class with a fine 8-0 win to go to the top of the league. But could there have been a shock on the cards at Phoenix Bar, where Dennis and his Palms Pool Bar team raced into a 3-0 lead? Again, the answer was in the negative because the home team awoke in time, Mitch’s men taking the last five to ease in. Boothen travelled to Spear Chuckers, and, after a close game which saw Sam’s latest 180 and victory in the trebles, the Stoke boys emerged victorious, and still in the title race. Daddy Cool was back to his best, hitting some excellent scores, including a 180, which helped Pas O Nadas A overcome an unlucky Emerald Lounge by a 6-2 margin. In the battle between two promoted sides, Tavern A, who have played well recently, welcomed visitors Picasso’s, who
triumphed 5-3. But the result could have been so different had double finishes been hit. A four-man Pub team travelled to Loch Inn A, with Grizzly performing like two men as he and Sam won doubles and singles. But the resilient home team held their nerve to snatch a creditable draw against one of the league’s finest. Ourplace Playboys entertained Waterfall, whose luck again failed them as they succumbed in the last game to lose 5-3 in what was a close match. Alex, on home turf, turned it on with a maximum to help the victors’ cause. Division 2 experienced some amazing darts, brilliant banter and giggles through the night. At the top, Sandy’s welcomed Naughty Nauta, and, for the first time ever, Julie got the better of Ramon. But Paddy’s team triumphed in the trebles for a 5-3 home win. Bitter rivals Legends, who were at home, played well to beat an unlucky Marilyn’s ‘B’ side 6-2 and leap into top spot by the closest of margins. Lady Macs made the long

journey to Buzzing B’s, and, despite scores of 123 and 121 from Elise, lost out in the 701 game, leaving as 5-3 losers but with heads held high. There was a similar situation at Bar Leones, whose match against Pas O Nadas B went to the

wire, producing a 4-4 draw. Ourplace Playgirls’ Shar was literally on her knees during the game at Clouseaus. But she still managed to pull out three perfect darts, and then helped to nick the trebles… and the result for a 5-3 win!
Red Devils produced the best darts of the night as they swept aside Nutty Nautas in a one-sided 7-1 victory. But Nauta Nomads couldn’t stop giggling all night, and the equally-happy Loch Inn B visitors were delighted with

a 4-4 scoreline. It was was the right outcome as the home team took the trebles. Finally, in a catchup match, Buzzing B’s were grateful to Mad Hatters as they played Bar Leones and emerged 6-2 winners.

Big Tim and Tobey are not so friendly
IT’S all shaping up nicely for Iberostar Tenerife in their pre-season friendlies as they followed the Adeje victory over Gran Canaria with two convincing victories in a triangular tournament in Logroño, La Rioja, in Northern Spain. The first was a 94-78 success against Bilbao, and American Tim Abromaitis was the outstanding player, with a huge 24-point return for Tenerife. Davin White’s 14 points
would normally have won top honours, but big Tim was untouchable. Just as pleasing as the victory margin was the return of Javi Beiran, the only Spanish player on the Tenerife roster. It has been nearly a year since serious injury sidelined the player, so his return to the squad was like an extra new signing for the season ahead. Tenerife outscored their hosts consistently with quarter scores of 25-17, 2421-24, 21-22 and 24-18. Zaragoza were also swiped aside just as easily in Tenerife’s 81-69 second success, which included another personal, stand-
out display, this time from new American Mike Tobey, who delivered 21 points. He was some distance ahead of Tim
Abromaitis, on 10 points. The quarter scores went 13-23, 29-15, 23-22, 169, and it all added up to more confidence ahead
of the league season. And all this without new Polish player Mateusz Ponikta, who joins the squad this week.
