‘Sex’ boast that misfired Continued from Front Zebenzuí González de Leon, La Laguna Town Hall’s Councillor for Markets, Health, Environment and Cemeteries, plus Beaches and Pools, was exposed when, mistakenly, he sent four messages to a WhatsApp group, created by his own PSOE party. The following texts were sent consecutively: “I get to s*** / hahaha / with employees that I hire / and give them jobs in the town hall and then campaign for geeks / hahaha / sorry / wrong group” The so-called “geeks” were actually PSOE colleagues Monica Martín, who is also the First Deputy Mayor, and María José Castañeda, Councillor for Culture and Tourism. The messages went to a group, organised particularly to allow internal communication between members of the PSOE party in the Northeast of Tenerife. When the members real-
ised what had happened, the messages were deleted (after an apology by Zebenzuí González), and a meeting was held at Castañeda’s house to discuss the issue, with Martín and González present. The first reaction was to close the group down, with many of its members later realising why. Last Friday, La Laguna Mayor José Alberto Díaz, of the Canary Coalition, suspended González because of his sexist comments, and the PSOE party followed suit. The decision was taken after a request from Monica Martín, the PSOE’s spokeswoman, and also “by personal conviction”, of Mayor Díaz at a press conference. He was convinced it was the right action after learning that digital newspaper Canarias Ahora had published the WhatsApp messages, sent by Zebenzuí González to the wrong group, suggesting he had
sex with the women he had “placed” in Town Hall jobs. Zebenzuí González is adamant he will not resign from La Laguna Council. But Mayor Díaz also announced that an investigation would start next week into people hired “in the immediate past” by the Council. The Mayor stressed: “The dignity of the workers in La Laguna Town Hall cannot be in question. And we will not tolerate a shadow of doubt about the professionalism and honesty of the official staff.” Diaz repeated his condemnation of the councillor’s comments, which were, he said: “Unacceptable and intolerable because they violate the dignity of women, and the requirement for public office must be high.” At the same time, though, he also denounced “the brutal lynching unleashed” against Zebenzuí González by some political parties, press and social media.
Queen Letizia back in school
SPAIN’S Queen Letizia attended Tuesday’s opening ceremony for the 2017-2018 school year at La Laguna’s San Matías School. She was accompanied by Canarian Government President Fernando Clavijo, and Iñigo Méndez de Vigo, his Minister of Education, Science and Sports. Her Majesty, and the rest of the entourage, later visited various classrooms, meeting and chatting with students from the age of six to eight. The entire school then congregated in the playground and presented Queen Letizia with a book containing work from each classroom. And to complete her visit, she met the pre-school students aged three to four. Her visit, which began at 11.30am, aroused the curiosity of hundreds of neighbours, who crowded outside the school from early in the morning, eager to greet the Queen. And they even sang Happy Birthday to Her Majesty, who turned 45 last Friday.

Residents flee as blaze ravages Gran Canaria A MAMMOTH forest blaze, raging on Gran Canaria, left hundreds of firefighters spending Wednesday night trying to contain flames of up to 25ft, with many frightened people fleeing their homes. Gran Canaria Cabildo soon declared the fire a level-2 emergency because of strong winds fanning the fire, near the summit. And yesterday (Thursday), at 8am, with the fast-moving blaze already spreading through five municipalities, the Cabildo said it was “neither controlled nor stabilised”. Some 300 troops from the Army emergency unit assisted at least as many fire-fighters, and nine helicopters and an airplane were working flat-out to counter the blaze, since access to the summit was closed. In addition, efforts were being made to restore electricity cuts in the municipalities affected. Many roads were also closed, and more than 800 people have been evacuated from San Mateo, Telde and Tejada, where school
activities were suspended yesterday. The blaze had already affected 2,000 hectares when the rain, forecast for yesterday morning, arrived to cool the temperature. So far, there is no indication what caused the fire, which
is away from the main tourist areas. However, the luxury Tejeda Parador hotel suffered damage to its grounds, with flames just inches from the bedrooms. But it was evacuated before the fire advanced.
An urgent appeal was made to anyone with a home in the area to leave immediately, particularly in the districts of Cruz, Lagunetas, Cueva Grande and Caleteras. Two social centres have been made available to accommodate around 100 displaced families. The Mayor of Tejeda spoke of “an incredible fire” in the island’s summit, while another horrified onlooker said: “The mountains are on fire.” It’s so sad to see.” The fire, which broke out in the afternoon, was described as “very aggressive”, and families were told to leave their properties after the 25ft flames came close to
their homes, and near main roads. At one stage, the fire surrounded the Tejeda Parador hotel, which, thankfully, was evacuated in time, and many island roads have been closed. It is not known how many tourists were staying there, or the extent of the damage to the luxury property. An urgent appeal has been made to anyone who has a home in the area to leave immediately, particularly in the districts of Cruz, Lagunetas, Cueva Grande and Caleteras. Two social centres, able to cater for some 100 displaced families, have been made available.

Loro Parque chief handed prestigious Global Award W O L F G A N G Kiessling, President and founder of Loro Parque and Loro Parque Fundación, has received the Global Humanitarian Award from American Humane, in recognition of his lifetime efforts to protect nature and preserve its biodiversity. The prestigious award was presented during the nationally-televised 2017 American Humane Hero Dog Awards, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, California. Mr Kiessling is the first person to receive this recognition from America’s first national humane organisation, which was awarded after Loro Parque became the first European zoo to be Humane Certified™ by American Humane in May.
Winning artists are the pick of the crop
WINNERS of Adeje Council’s Healthy Food art competition, launched last April, have received their prizes from the Department of Health. The aim of the competition was to encourage healthier lifestyles among the borough’s young people. It was aimed at children in primary
schools, promoting the importance of fruit and vegetables in pursuit of a balanced diet. There were different categories, depending on the students’ ages, and the winners were: Maryam Lagder Rodríguez (CEIP Fañabe), Valentina Peroni (CEIP Armeñime) and Gabriela Rivero Siverio (CEIP Las Torres). Their parents, who were actually presented with the prizes, were given vouchers for this year’s school materials.
Local Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo said the competition was introduced in April, through the public primary schools, under the slogan “Eat healthily, live healthily”. The main aim was to help children assimilate information, guiding them to improve their eating habits and, thus, prevent the later development of health issues, related to inadequate nutrition.
The 13.5-hectare zoo passed a rigorous third-party audit, which confirmed that Loro Parque complied with American Humane Conservation standards. That ensured that the park’s animals enjoy the finest conditions in areas such as health, housing, socialinteractions, adequate environments and proper preparation and protocols to manage medical or operational emergencies. Loro Parque was also acknowledged recently as the “Best Zoo in the World” by TripAdvisor. It is an award based on thousands of independent reviews from the park’s visitors, who want to share their experiences in Loro Parque with other users of this worldwide platform. Loro Parque also confirmed its full compliance with the Global Welfare Standards of the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA), after being inspected by the auditors of Global Spirit and obtaining a 100% rating. Among the ABTA members are leaders in the tourism
industry, such as Thomas Cook and TUI UK. The protection, conservation and educational efforts of Loro Parque cannot be grasped fully without knowledge of its research and conservation programmes, which have been carried out since 1994 through the Loro Parque Fundación. Thanks to the support of Loro Parque, its partners, visitors, friends and collaborators, more than 17 million dollars have been invested directly for the development of conservation programmes, both at the park and elsewhere, globally. Loro Parque, founded in 1972, is an internationallyrenowned zoological park in the North of Tenerife, and more than 47 million people have visited the park since its inauguration. It is widely-known for having the biggest and the most diverse collection of parrots in the world. For more information, please visit www. loroparque.com.

Bangers and hash!
THE 39-year-old manager of a Gran Canaria restaurant in Maspalomas, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, has been arrested for selling hashish and marijuana to clients.
A tourist dining at the restaurant said he had been offered the drugs by a member of staff. The National Police searched the restaurant and found various packets containing the drugs, hidden in the kitchen’s extractor fan.
Police gun-threat … with air pistol
POLICE in Gran Canaria have arrested a Brit who threatened officers with a gun, which, it transpired, was an air pistol. A holiday-maker raised the alarm after spotting the 51-year-old hiding the pistol under his clothes, before entering a Playa del Ingles shopping centre. When stopped by officers, the man reacted by pointing the gun at them. The patrol pair discovered it was not a firearm only after a struggle, during which they pinned him to the ground and disarmed him. A source said: “The detainee didn’t say why he was carrying it, so we don’t know what its intended use was for.”
Stars to turn out for the San Juan centre A HOST of artists will be performing at Madrid’s Lyrica Festival on 20th October to raise funds for Adejebased Asociación San Juan. The announcement came at a press conference in front of Isabel Fernández González, Adeje Councillor for Social Welfare and Diversity; Ana Oneida Borges Medina, Asociación San Juan President; Isabel Rey, soprano and Honorary Patron of the Association;
José Manuel de la Cruz, from concert sponsor Endesa, and Carlos Maré, the gala event’s Executive Producer. Isabel Rey said many top European artists would be using this concert to perform for the first time in Spain, and many others were disappointed because their schedules prevented them from joining in. She added: “It’s so moving, that so many people want to take part. We have created an event that is loved by the public, and by opera singers, too. They want to be here, and they want to help the Asociación San
Juan.” International tenors such as Christoph Strehl and Piotr Beczala, along with soprano Elena Mosuk, will join many others on stage for this spectacular event. Executive Producer Maré said: “Tickets prices have been designed to allow everyone to attend, with prices ranging between seven and 80 euros. “They are now on sale online (through the Teatro Real website, h t t p : / / w w w. t e a t r o - r e a l . com/es/temporada-17-18/ conciertos-y-recitales/ivfiesta-lirica-endesa) with a ‘row zero’ also on sale for
those who cannot attend, but would like to donate.” Councillor Fernández Gonzalez congratulated the event organisers, and the on-going contribution the association makes to society. “You need to buy your tickets quickly because they will sell out,” she said. The Asociación San Juan is a centre for curative education and social therapy, as well as promoting an education and a way of life to promote human rights and a level of auto-determination. It also caters for the integration of those individuals who need special assistance.

Pensions Jargon Buster! We always encourage people to speak to us about pensions, but we also understand that industry jargon can quickly make a conversation seem bewildering. To someone who is trying to understand a new area of investment it is important that any advice is clear and carefully explained.
Here we demystify some of the terms most used in the pensions industry and explain what they mean.
State Pension
The State Pension is a regular payment from the Government. It is based on your National Insurance contributions. Most people can claim the State Pension when they reach State Pension age. The April 2016 changes to the State Pension now mean that there are two different systems for claiming.
Personal Pension
With a Personal Pension you choose the provider and make arrangements for your contributions to be paid. Like the SIPP below, you have control of where the money is invested.
Defined Benefit
Defined benefit schemes, also known as ‘final salary’, promise a specific income linked to your number of years’ service and final salary.
Annuity
An annuity is income bought from a provider using your pension pot. An annuity can be purchased to run for the rest of your life, or for a fixed period.
Joint Life Annuity
As with annuity above but is paid to your spouse after you die.
Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) Enhanced Annuity A SIPP is a scheme which you set up yourself. If you set up your own SIPP you have control of what contributions you make and where the pension money is invested. This type of pension may be useful if you have a number of pension pots and want to consolidate them in one place.
If you have a life-limiting condition, you may secure a higher rate of guaranteed income called an Enhanced Annuity. The higher rate reflects the fact you may not live as long as a healthy person.
Group Personal Pension (GPP)
Drawdown
A personal pension may be offered through your employer. These are called group personal pensions. Members in a GPP build up a personal pension pot, which they then convert into an income at retirement.
Defined Contribution
With a defined contribution pension you build up a pot of money that you can then use to provide an income in retirement. The income you get depends on the amount you pay in, the fund’s investment performance and the choices you make at retirement.
Drawdown of income allows you to take an income from your pension savings. The remainder would remain invested.
Tax-Free Lump Sum
The tax-free lump sum is the sum which you can take, without being taxed, from your pension. This amount is usually 25%
Lifetime Allowance
The lifetime allowance refers to the total amount you can invest in your pension. This is currently £1 million.

Drug-mules made to swallow heroin
THE Guardia Civil drug squad in Gran Canaria has flattened a gang smuggling heroin into the Canaries, arresting 11 people of Spanish or Dutch nationality.
Operation Altagracia began in March after the Guardia received information on a drug-trafficking gang in Belgium, using human drug-mules on flights from Holland to the Canaries. By setting up several checkpoints at Canarian airports, officers intercepted three people on flights from the Netherlands. After X-raying the trio, they discovered a large number of foreign bodies inside their stomachs, which turned out
Ryanair ch 400,000 tick
to be heroin capsules. Each person had swallowed up to one kilo of puregrade heroin, probably in a condom, which would have been part of their deal with the gang, even though it could lead to heart failure and a quick death, should a capsule rupture inside the stomach. The gang laundered the drug money by investing into businesses such as lottery administrations, or call centres. In total, the Guardia's drug squad seized 35,725 euros in cash, together with 4.85kg of heroin, worth 280,000 euros on the street. But the investigation is still ongoing because two international arrest warrants have been issued as two gang members are still at large.
Drunk and incapable!
A DRUNKARD, aged 54, who tried to attack police officers with a large stick in the early hours of Sunday, was arrested in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, where he lived.
Local Police officers, patrolling the area, noticed a speeding vehicle and signalled the driver to pull over. But when they asked for his
licence and car documentation, the driver turned violent and his answers were incoherent. He then got out of the car, wielding a large stick with which he threatened them. The man attacked one officer, but missed him because he was so drunk. The other cops took the opportunity to restrain him on the ground and arrest him, but two of the officers suffered minor injuries in the scuffle.
BUDGET airline Ryanair might have to cancel up to 400,000 bookings in a sixweek period, because of a huge admin blunder, which could scar its reputation badly. Europe’s biggest airline has cancelled up to 50 flights a day, after failing to plan the pilots’ holiday rota correctly. More than 200 flights affected are either into or out of London Stansted, with a handful in Edinburgh, Manchester and Birmingham. The farcical own-goal
is expected to cost Ryanair at least £17.6m in compensation, and a further £4.4m in lost profits. In addition, an estimated £500m has been wiped off the company’s market value, and its reputation among customers is suffering major turbulence. It will take all the powers possessed by Chief Executive Michael O’Leary for Ryanair to recover fully from this corporate nosedive. Many customers, who were offered alternative flights, said they had to pay out hundreds of pounds for extra accommodation, plus taxis, after being flown to the wrong airports. But although Ryanair flies
to Tenerife from several UK airports, the good news for our tourists is that flights to and from the island do not appear to have been affected, according to the company’s published schedule. O’Leary, Ryanair’s normally-outspoken leader, admitted: “This is a mess of our own making, and I apologise sincerely to all our customers for any worry or concern this has caused them over the past weekend. “While over 98% of our customers will not be affected by these cancellations, we apologise unreservedly to those customers whose travel will be disrupted.

haos to hit ket-holders
Car-crash weekend
Three people were injured in two separate car accidents over the weekend, starting at 7am on the Saturday, when a 32-year-old woman lost control of her vehicle. It crashed into a motorway barrier on the TF-1, near Guaza, and, such was the impact that fire-fighters had to
“We assure them that we have done our utmost to try to ensure that we can re-accommodate most of them on alternative flights, on the same, or next, day.” But he stressed: “We will not pay for flights on other airlines. We cannot afford to pay the high costs of our competitors. “Our booking engine is full of passengers, who have sworn they will never fly
with us again.” Customers whose flights were affected were contacted by email on Monday night, but, prior to this, all 18 million Ryanair passengers had been left in the dark. “We did not focus on the concern we were causing to the 18 million passengers flying with us over the next six weeks,” said O’Leary. “I say sorry to them.”
The huge number of flight cancellations has been attributed to 140 Ryanair pilots defecting to rival airline Norwegian in 2017, leading to pilot shortages. Further problems were caused by pilots being forbidden from using their holiday allowance over the busy summer period. But despite being offered a one-off, 12,000-euro payment to give up holiday leave, pilots are determined to secure new contracts and be paid more. Tory MP Huw Merriman, a member of the Commons Transport Committee, said: “This highlights, once again, the need for automatic compensation across the industry. “Ryanair should now take the initiative and pay out to passengers they know are entitled to compensation, without making people jump through hoops.” One example of the misery Ryanair has caused was demonstrated by Kellie Roffee, who, with her four children, were heading
9 CW
for Mallorca to celebrate husband Simon’s 30th birthday. And only at the departure gate were they told that the flight had been grounded. The family, from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, saved up for 12 months to go on holiday. But they were denied a dream trip when Ryanair cancelled their flight, 45 minutes before boarding. Kellie, Simon and their children, Casey, 15, Ella, 12, Ryan, nine and AmeliaRose, five, wasted a whole day at Leeds Bradford Airport before returning home crestfallen. Kellie, 35, said: “We were sitting in the VIP lounge when we heard the tannoy, asking for everyone to go to Gate Four, and we thought we were on our way.” She added: “We were really excited, but they locked the doors and said nobody was going anywhere. And we’ve not even had an apology from Ryanair.” But the family have been promised a full refund
cut her out of the car. She suffered a back injury and was taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment. Another incident, featuring two vehicles on the main road going through Las Rosas, near Las Galletas, happened on Sunday afternoon. The injured parties, a boy of five and a 45-year-old woman, both suffered chest and neck injuries and were taken to Costa Adeje’s Quirón Hospital for medical care. from the airline, plus a compensation pay-off, yet to be decided. How to claim: The only defence an airline has for not paying out compensation for cancelled flights is if they are caused by an “extraordinary circumstance”, such as a volcanic-ash cloud, acts of terrorism or sabotage, or civil unrest. These cancellations do not qualify. But if you find yourself stranded abroad because of a cancelled flight, with Ryanair or any other reputable airline, the company responsible has a legal obligation, under EU Regulation 261/2004, to get you home at the earliest opportunity. And, in the present circumstances, if you’re told to rebook on a Ryanair flight which won’t be leaving for several days, you can switch your original flights to an alternative airline, and claim any reasonable expenses back from the Irish carrier.

Teenager made to work in a brothel
A TELDE woman, who owns two brothels in Gran Canaria, has been arrested by National Police, accused of forcing other women into prostitution, including a 17-year-old girl. The 23-year-old was said to have used the poor financial situation of women to force them into prostituting themselves in her brothels.
The brothel-owner, who punished the teenager if she didn’t fulfil her “working hours”, has been charged with prostitution and corruption of a minor. The National Police, ordered by the judge ruling the case to search both brothels, seized various drugs which were, allegedly, distributed to clients there.

Cops bag fakes

The trio fled from the citizen security unit immediately, leaving the goods behind. The cops have, recently, been controlling illegal street-vending in the municipality.
Mako shark bites surfer
A YOUNGSTER, aged 13, was bitten on the foot by a 1½-metre mako shark while surfing at La Aldea de San Nicolás, in Gran Canaria. The boy was taken to the local medical centre for the wound to be cleaned, and a few stitches inserted. Biologists at the Canarian Governments Biodiversity Department believe it was an “accident”. The experts said, according to the images of the injuries, it was probably a young shark “that got confused because they do not eat human flesh, only fish”. They added: “It had no intention of attacking.” The local Council referred to it as “a freak incident”, and reassured the public it was safe to swim in the sea.

NEWS IN BRIEF Spain’s big drought fear
THE critically-low water levels in reservoirs across Spain have led to concerns about taps running dry, as well as a drought being declared in some regions. Despite moderate rainfall at the end of August, the overall level of reservoirs throughout the country is just 41.24%, compared with 54.18% in the same week last year. Official figures show that some provinces are faring worse than others, with Almeria (8.97%), Valencia (21.62%), Granada (34.82%) and Malaga (38.23%) near the bottom of the water tables. Provinces with an abundance of water include Huelva (74.1%) and the Asturias (71.71%).
Woman’s phoney claim
LA Laguna’s National Police arrested a 24-year-old Spanish woman for filing a false denuncia, complaining that her iPhone 7 had been stolen. In fact, she had actually sold it online, via “Wallapop”. An investigation began in July, when the woman made the denuncia, and officers discovered that she had sold the phone online for 525 euros. She was arrested and charged with making a false claim.

Spain in turmoil over D-Day for Catalonia WITH the atmosphere almost at fever pitch before Catalonia’s referendum vote over independence on 1st October, a battle of wills appears to be taking place. But Catalan High Court confirmed on Wednesday that the arrests of Barcelona’s senior regional government officials and businessmen that morning were not ordered by the central government, or the Public Prosecutor’s Office. Juan Antonio Ramírez Sunyer, investigating judge at Barcelona’s Court Nº13, ordered the National Police and Guardia Civil, acting under his direct orders as judicial police, to carry out 41 searches and make the arrests. Catelonia’s High Court said: “Six of the searches were at the headquarters of Catalan Government departments, and they were limited to the offices of the persons being investigated.” Judge Ramírez also ordered searches at three companies and some private addresses. The charges being investigated by the judge stem from two private, criminal complaints filed in February by the minority party VOX (0 MPs) and a lawyer, Miguel Durán, acting in a private capacity. Vox leader Santiago Abascal would not comment further, citing the investigation’s secrecy. But he tweeted a message to Catalan First Minister Carles Puigdemont, accusing him of being overly dramatic and adding: “It wasn’t Mariano Rajoy”. Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias said earlier: “We are moving towards a situation in which there are going to be
political prisoners in Spain.” The Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Òminum, leading separatist organisations, called on thousands of their supporters to demonstrate outside the offices of Barcelona’s Regional Economy Ministry. Jordi Sánchez, the ANC Chairman, tweeted, “the time has come to defend our institutions”, later adding that the Central Government “has declared war because we wanted to vote”. Meanwhile, MPs from the Republican Catalan Left (Esquerra, ERC) walked out of Congress in Madrid. One MP, Gabriel Rufián, told Spanish Prime Minister Rajoy angrily: “I demand you take your dirty hands off Catalan institutions.” In another, major bid to scupper Catalonia’s efforts to stage a referendum vote, Guardia Civil officers seized “nearly 10 million” ballot papers. Despite Spain’s Constitutional Court actually suspending the vote after Rajoy challenged it in the courts, judges are considering whether the legislation contravenes Spain’s constitution, which states that the country is indivisible. The Home Office confirmed in a brief statement that the ballot papers had been removed from a warehouse in the Catalonian town of Bigues i Riells. It also confirmed that other materials for the organisation of polling stations, such as posters or lists of voters, had also been taken. This reaction followed Catalonia’s regional parliament passing a law in prepara-
tion for its referendum. Tensions continue to rise daily, with Rajoy threatening to cut the power to buildings used for the vote, and the Constitutional Court ordering the Guardia Civil, National Police, Mossos d’Esquadra and Local Police to act to stop it. But Cataluña’s First Minister Carles Puigdemont said: “Did they really think we wouldn’t vote?” Yet the pressure really is on Catalonia as the referendum vote date draws still closer. Following an emergency meeting of the regional government, Puigdemont responded to Wednesday’s earlier raids on regional ministries, also by Guardia Civil officers, who arrested senior officials, saying it “violates human rights”. He condemned “the attitude of the Spanish Government”, and offered support to those arrested. And an angry Puigdemont said Rajoy’s Government “has crossed a red line”, labelling it “a democratic shame”. Also on Wednesday, the Spanish Home Office announced that it had cancelled all leave for National Police and Guardia Civil officers in Catalonia until 5th October. The order affects all leave, time off and working hours for every officer in the region until that date, “to guarantee compliance with the decision of the Constitutional Court to suspend the illegal 1st October referendum in Catalonia”. The headquarters and trade unions of both police forces have been informed, with just nine days remaining before the crunch!
A BODY found in the sea near the Las Palmas watertreatment plant in Gran Canaria, is believed to be that of a fisherman. He has not yet been identified, but his description corresponds to a man aged between 55-60, height between 1.70-1.75m, with a moustache, wearing swimming trunks and a polo T-shirt. He was found floating in the sea by other fishermen, who notified emergency services. Maritime rescue recovered the body and took it to Las Palmas harbour, from where it was taken to a medical institute for an autopsy, to determine the cause of death and, hopefully, identification.
Dad’s ultimate sacrifice
A MAN aged 50 drowned last Saturday at Playa de San Andrés, in Gran Canaria, after a desperate attempt to save his son. The incident happened at 7pm when the flags warned of rough waves between 2-3 metres high. But the youngster was still swimming in the sea and started to struggle. No fewer than five other people went in to help him, two lifeguards and three others. But, tragically, the father was pulled out of the water, suffering a heart attack, and CPR from lifeguards then paramedics could not save him. However, his son survived and was taken to hospital as a precaution, because he had swallowed a lot of sea-water.
Snow joking matter! SPAIN’S red-hot summer has eased off to a milder, yet still-warm autumn, but as holiday-makers continue to flood the Costas in search of sun and sand, those in the north have experienced rain… and even snow! The Pyrenees and Can-
tabrian mountains have displayed a peculiar sight as they turned white this month, much earlier than normal. And ski resorts in the highest peaks of the Pyrenees have been covered in snow. Many northern Spain areas
have not risen above 20º Celsius during the day, dropping below 10º at night. A recent mass of cold air has led to the startling transformation, but temperatures are expected to return to normal by the weekend.

EasyJet air-filters should cut illness
LOW-COST airline easyJet plans to fit air-filtration systems into its passenger cabins and cockpits to prevent toxic fumes from entering the two areas.
It is seen as the industry’s first acknowledgement of “aerotoxic syndrome”, which can be dangerous, and could explain why some pilots and passengers are prone to sudden illness. Tests on these new filters will take place early next year, which will please National Health Service officials. That’s because the NHS already has a special unit at London’s St Thomas’ Hospital to help those affected by aeroplanes’ onboard toxic fumes. The Aerotoxic Association
says a decision was made in 1963 to cease drawing air into the cabin through the fuselage, and to use “bleed air”. This is taken from the engines and mixed with 50% of re-circulated cabin air. This is understood to have increased the number of “fume event” episodes, often dismissed as simply some blue or white smoke, but which, in fact, may be toxic. Around 250,000 people have been affected, adversely, over the years, including many pilots and crew. Whether other airlines will follow easyJet’s lead remains to be seen. But there are fears that some will not want to admit to the supposed “problem”, in case they receive financial claims from those affected, especially the on-board staff.

Balearic island’s beaches struck by raw sewage THREE Mallorcan beaches were redflagged after heavy rains caused human waste to flood the Mediterranean. Emaya, the company responsible for managing the municipal water cycle, including the maintenance of sewage, sanitation and water-purification facilities, confirmed that there was a health risk at the Can Pere Antoni, Ciutat Jardí, and Playa de Palma beaches, after rain flooded the sewer system. It is the fourth time this year that Can Pere Antoni has been closed through sewers flooding the sea. Every time Mallorca gets more than a light rain, surrounding waters are contaminated because there are insufficient city pipes to hold the surplus. This year, Can Pere Antoni lost its Blue Flag through
flooding sewers and molten plastics from the port expansion. Recently, the local government signed off on an expansion of the waste-
water treatment plant in Coll de’n Rabassa. And Emaya says the hightech expansion will need a budget of around 80m euros.

Sobering sight for passers-by
A MALLORCA tourist in Paguera, arrested for drink-driving in the nude, is one of 101 people to be fined for public nudity, or having sex on the street, in the Calvia municipality this summer. The ton-up group have incurred fines of up to 600 euros each after being caught in the streets wearing nothing more than their birthday suits. In the three months to August, most of those arrested for pub-
lic indecency were in Magaluf. And of the 2,456 fines handed out by Calvia Police this summer, 283 were for being drunk and disorderly or drug possession, 1,603 for hawking, or illegal, on-street sales, and 99 for offering unauthorised massages on the street. The rest were for “uncivic conduct”, such as vandalism. The fines have netted the Calvia Council a whopping 16,350 euros, according to police.
Seat 600’s record show
SPAIN’S beloved Seat 600 has entered the Guinness Book of Record for the largest-ever gathering of the same make and model of car in one place. It was the final flourish of the Seat 600’s 60th anniversary, organised by motor-racing team Targa Iberia, which attracted over 4,000 spectators and owners. And, of course, the 787 total of 600s, all still roadworthy and in perfect condition, which was a requirement for the owners taking part. The event, following
a rally at Montmeló’s Grand Prix circuit in the Barcelona region, ended with a giant 60th birthday cake being cut. Nearly every Spaniard’s first car in the late 1950s and the 1960s was probably the Seat 600, which is an icon of Spanish motoring history in several ways. It was one of the earliest forms of mass, private transport and enabled even those of modest means to get on the road. “With the 600, Seat became one of the mainstays of Spanish industry, and it remains so today,” said company chairman Luca de Meo, as he was presented with the official Guinness Book of Records certificate.
Swim For Life just splashing PINK skull caps sliced through the water as swimmers of all ages dived into the Swim For Life at Tenerife Top Training, in La Caleta, last Saturday. This little cousin of the long-established Walk For Life mixed fun, competition, and fitness to raise 545 euros towards the fight against breast cancer. It started off with team members each doing two lengths of a relay, comprising four different strokes in the 50m pool. Even the less-experienced swimmers showed a bit of competitive edge, but all were keen to do their bit for the cause. Moving to the 25m pool, it was time for Aquagym. And a bit of pink make-up on the face made the smiles even wider as T3 fitness staff Alejandro Arteaga and Katrin Mairhofer put them
through their paces with a belting dance sound-track. The fruit and iced water were much appreciated during the break, before the crazy challenges back in the bigger pool. Relays, performed sideways across the pool were made a little more testing by entrants having to swim over the lane ropes, while balancing balloon hats. A mass effort, involving all the relay swimmers in the 50m pool, brought the action to a vigorous end, just in time to tuck into a couple of giant paellas. It was a refreshing few
hours, with long-term supporters of the pink crusade meeting some new recruits. As well as fundraising, it’s about raising awareness of breast cancer, and the need for early diagnosis and treatment. Clear a space in your diary for Sunday, 17th December, when the Walk For Life will snake its way through Arona and Adeje, with thousands joining in the stroll. Moody’s setting the credit-rating mood C ATA L O N I A’ S independence would be a major blow to Spain’s international credit rating, and to that of the would-be “new” country, according to Moody’s. Although the international credit-rating company’s forecast is for the region to remain part of Spain, Catalonia represents 19% of the country’s GDP, out of 17 autonomouslygoverned communities, plus the city enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, on the northern Moroccan coast. Also, 16% of the Catalan population have personal wealth above the national average. Sarah Carlson, senior deputy chairwoman for Moody’s, and analyst Marisol Blázquez, both believe the north-eastern region will not become a separate country. That, they say, is because of the “firm and continued opposition” by the Spanish Government, plus the existence of numerous legal instruments the
State has in its power to stop it happening. Also, the polls indicate that the percentage of Catalonia’s population in general, which supports secession, is “lower than the majority”. In addition, Catalonia has no legal framework for constituting a “country”, and the lack of a minimum participation threshold in the referendum. Moody’s predicts that the political relationship between Catalonia and the State will “remain very tense, and could complicate efforts to reach a compromise that responds to Catalonia’s desire for greater autonomy”. “A greater decentralisation of Catalonia within the scope of Spain as a whole is likely, due to pro-independence pressures,”
Carlson and Blázquez say in their report. The best solution, they believe, “would be to satisfy some of Catalonia’s principal demands, such as increased financial and tax resources, and a reform of the regional financing framework, but always in compliance with the Spanish Constitution”. But, says Professor Miguel Ángel Ariño, of the International School of Economics in Spain (IESE), which issues the annual Economic Uncertainty Index (I3E): “International confidence in Spain’s economy does not appear to be affected at the moment by world politics, or by the drive for Catalonia secession.” Also, the country’s perceived economic stability levels are increasing.
Cowards mug
pensioner
THREE cowardly men mugged a pensioner in Las Americas, stealing his wallet containing 200 euros in cash and giving him a terrible beating.
The incident happened on Calle Arquitecto Gómez Cuesta, near the Zentral Center Hotel, and he was taken to hospital for treatment. Thanks to various witnesses, the Local Police were able to identify and arrest two of the attackers. The third man drove off in a Renault Twingo,
which was later found abandoned, and taken to the Las Americas police compound. Hours later, the same man, acting innocently, had the nerve to try to claim the vehicle from the compound. Fortunately, he was recognised immediately and was also arrested.

Customs delay Brit aid trucks for disaster area British aid trucks, heading, last week, for the Caribbean, were delayed by Spanish officials at the Gibraltar border. Five truck-loads of disasterrelief items from the Department for International Development (DFID) were held up and searched before they were loaded on to HMS Ocean, according to The Sun. After spending two days collecting aid, the ship left Gibraltar hours later than planned, making its way to the devastated British Virgin Islands and Anguilla. Instead of waving the vehicles through, officials from Spanish Customs were said to have searched around 200 pallets, carrying buckets and hygiene kits. The aid trucks arrived from Alicante at the border on the Monday night and were searched the following morning. A government source said:
The group, led by researcher Roberto Ontañón, one of Spain’s leading prehistorians and a UNESCO advisor, is said to have used non-destructive and non-invasive techniques to extract information about geometric drawings and their underlying, surface shapes and colour in four caves. Using photometric techniques which involve computational cameras, they have captured a series of images under different light angles, recovering measurements of brush and tool marks in the process. LOCAL Police, in the early hours of Saturday morning, were astonished to see a 30-year-old woman driver stop before their La Laguna checkpoint, then reverse 300 metres at speed, towards the university. She was finally halted, and arrested for failing a breath-test and ignoring the check-point. And her car was towed away.

“The trucks were due to arrive on Tuesday morning, but were held up at customs for hours and only arrived at lunchtime.” He added: “There is often a go-slow by the border patrols, clearly trying to
make a point. It would have been clear, immediately, that this was aid, but it still took hours to get through.” A DFID official said the searches were “random” and not motivated politically. Meanwhile, another DFID
van, carrying waterpurification tablets, had been driven from Essex to Spain. But it got lost on the way because the Polish driver had to ask for directions.
Ancient mysteries of simple cave-painting A TEAM from Northern Spain’s Cantabria Museum of Prehistory is using cutting-edge technology to uncover Palaeolithic cave paintings, in an area which includes the UNESCO World Heritage Altamira site.
Drunk woman cops it
are some 70 caves with paintings in the Cantabrian mountain range, and his team will use photometric techniques to continue uncovering them. “Our goal is to visit the caves and use the latest technology to uncover walls that have been painted or decorated, but where these marks cannot be seen with the naked eye,” he said. “These discoveries will add to the map of art in this area.” The four sites where art has been found are El Rejo (Val de San Vicente), Las Graciosas (Medio Cudeyo), Los Murciélagos (Entremabasaguas) and Solviejo (Voto). And the
project is being funded by the regional government of Cantabria. Most of the decorations are simple, geometric patterns, using red and ochre, which are difficult to discern in deep caves, many thousands of years after they were created. The research team are also using lasers and 3D scanners to recreate the features inside the caves, coupled with a range of photographic techniques to create high-definition, three-dimensional images. But apart from a few drawings of deer in one cave, the majority of the images are simple, geometric designs.
The drawings date back to between 22,000 and 28,000 years ago, making them significantly older than the bison of Altamira, which were painted around 16,000 years ago. Scientists have dated other cave art in Cantabria back 40,000 years, making them among the oldest so far discovered on the planet. Cantabria’s mountains host one of the largest concentrations of prehistoric art in the world, and, said Ortañón: “It was a very good place to live during the Ice Age. “The Cantabrian Sea warmed up the climate, and vast herds of wild animals, such as horses, passed through that narrow strip between the sea and the mountains.” The Altamira caves host the largest legacy of prehistoric art in the area, and their discovery in 1868 changed our views of humanity. They established that our most distant ancestors thought and expressed themselves in ways similar to our own, and had their own concepts of spirituality.
AN elderly cyclist was stopped by the Guardia Civil at a routine drinkdrugs roadside checkpoint in Galicia for riding “erratically”. The officers, who breathalysed the 73-yearold man, were staggered to discover he was four times over the drink-drive limit. After being charged, the old boy, who faces a fine of up to 1,000 euros, then pushed his bike to a local bar for another drink. In Spain, as France, Italy and Portugal, cyclists are subject to the same-drink driving laws as motorists.
It’s simply gnome laughing matter!
A POLICE bomb squad, complete with sniffer dogs, were alerted after a man left a 30cm-high clay figurine outside the government buildings in the Mallorcan capital of Palma. Security guard Francisco Covas told police he saw “a rather unkemptlooking man” leave the garden gnome and flee. Mr Covas, who placed a “Caution” sign next to the figurine and called police, said: “I was quite scared, and you can’t be too careful.” The street was barricaded off for safety’s sake while two members of Palma’s bomb squad checked out the gnome. But once they had verified it was not a threat, the street reopened 20 minutes later.

Cannabis, by the ton!
MORE than 8,000 cannabis plants were seized as Guardia Civil officers nabbed nine Spanish men on the Costa de la Luz, in Andalucia. Operation Libreros began when officers were warned about a large greenhouse in a secluded area within a small Cadiz town of the same name, where the cultivation and drying-out of the plants went on. The area had been rented out for the growing of flowers and vegetables. Instead, though, it was full of marijuana plants, which had shot up to between 1.52.5 metres in height. Entry to the greenhouse had been made difficult, and efforts had been made to hide its contents from
public view, with windows and gaps covered by metal plates. Following initial investigations, Guardia suspicions were confirmed when, after sampling a strong smell of weed in the area, officers went ahead and raided the building. The thousands of plants had been well-cared-for, with lighting, ventilation and humidity equipment all in place. Preparation paraphernalia, such as mesh trays for the drying of buds, plus shredders, as well as equipment for weighing and packaging, were also discovered Two vehicles and every single plant were seized, and all nine men have been imprisoned without bail, following an initial court appearance.

A mortgage tonic for home-owners FEARS of mortgages and loans in Spain getting costlier this autumn are unfounded because the Central European Bank (BCE) has opted to keep interest rates at 0%.
This historic low has been in place since March 2016, although recent talks hinted that the eurozone interest rate, or Euribor, would increase from September because the common currency area is now out of recession. But the BCE’s announcement will mean so much for home-owners, although investors relying on asset interest for their income will have to wait a while before they can enjoy new riches. In fact, deposit-interest will carry on sitting at -0.40% (negative figures). But this does not mean banks will deduct funds instead of paying interest, and anyone who finds this happening should appeal. Loan interest, including mortgages, will remain at 0.25%, and current homeloans range from around
1.5% to 4% on top of the Euribor, making them cheaper than ever for those who pay them in euros. The difference between Euribor highs of late 2007 and early 2008, when the rate rocketed to over 5.5% for the first time, are huge on a typical 35-year, 100,000-euro mortgage. Over the last nine years or more, a 5% drop would have seen the homeowner save around 170 euros a month. Meanwhile, the BCE will continue to buy bonds on existing debt at the current rate of 60 billion euros a month until the end of this year, at least, or possibly longer if it considers that necessary. The Spanish Government hopes the BCE’s official interest rates will “remain at current levels for a prolonged period”, or a length of time which “vastly ex-
ceeds its net bond-buying forecast time-scale”. Although fixed until January only, this time-scale may continue indefinitely until inflation levels meet the Bank’s objectives. Year-on-year, Eurozone inflation in August rose to 1.5%, compared with 1.3% in July, which is its highest climb since April, according to EU’s statistics agency Eurostat. But it is still far short of the BCE’s price-stability criteria, which needs inflation to be around 2%. Last month, the BCE confirmed that the Eurozone was finally out of recession, exactly a decade after it started, midway through 2007. Spain, which is leading Eurozone growth, is officially the fastest-expanding economy in the single-currency area.

The Human Body: Secrets Of Your Life Revealed Monday 25th September, BBCC2, 21.00
Russia With Simon Reeve
Thursday 28th September, BBC2, 21.00
Episode one: Grow. Through a combination of cutting-edge research, groundbreaking graphics and experiments on their own bodies, doctors Chris and Xand van Tulleken reveal the extraordinary stories hidden within each and every one of us: the story of how we grow, survive and learn. In this episode we tell the story of how over a lifetime we undergo an extraordinary process of growth - no other animal on Earth goes through such a dramatic metamorphosis. Chris and Xand van Tulleken explore the latest understanding of how we all grow, uncover the secrets of human breast milk and find out how it feeds not just us, but an army of bacteria. They discover the reason our childhood is longer than any other creature on earth and see the human brain developing as its never been seen before. They uncover the mysterious trigger for our transformation from child to adult and, for the first time, show the remarkable ‘spark of life’ that’s emitted when sperm and egg first meet. Dr Chris meets a researcher who is working to extend the life of our stem cells and producing lab-grown human organs for transplant.
On the first leg of his journey Simon travels across Russia’s far east, from the rugged snow covered mountains of Kamchatka to Yakutia, the coldest inhabited region in the world. He finds himself surrounded by erupting volcanoes and in an extreme climate where the only people making a living are reindeer herders in temperatures as low as -30C. Simon meets the indigenous people whose way of life is now threatened by changes to the climate. Outside Vladivostok, Russia’s great eastern port, Simon investigates the growing influence of China in the area. But in this hugely sensitive region the crew soon realise they are being followed. More than once they are stopped by police and later detained without explanation. Passing through the Boreal Forest, which is one of the lungs of the planet and home to the Amur Tiger, Simon meets the inspirational conservationist who runs a sanctuary to protect this endangered and iconic Russian predator. Whilst in a town at the centre of the timber trade, Simon learns that Russia is said to have the largest hidden deforestation in the world - however the crew’s exit from the region ends up being a little sooner than expected when the Russian authorities once again take a close interest in filming. Simon’s final destination is the heart of Siberia and the remote Batagay Crater, a giant mega slump that has appeared in the thawing permafrost. As it thaws it releases large amounts of methane, a much more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. If, as scientists fear, the melting permafrost across Russia and the Arctic releases large amounts of methane into the atmosphere, it could have a devastating impact on our world.

Matt’s news puts a dampener on Adam and Tina’s babymaking plans. Adam tries to convince his son to do the right thing and is stunned to hear that Matt wants to keep the baby. Despite Matt agreeing to tell Karen, Adam weighs in and is about to do the deed when Karen gets an important work call and the Williams boys slink off with a prolonged execution! It is Karen’s daughter Ellie that blurts out that her twin, Olivia is pregnant and Karen is horrified to learn that Adam already knew. Hurt and upset, Karen is on the warpath but supports her daughter’s decision one hundred percent. Can Karen keep hold of her business while her back is turned or is Benjamin sharpening the knife? David is put on the spot by someone with an axe to grind. As he frantically tries to work out who this mystery man is, George puts him out of his misery; he’s Nikki’s husband and is convinced that David has been banging his wife! Thinking on his feet, David concocts a story about providing financial advice for her ‘nail bar business,’ and George backs off, for now. David meets Robyn for a drink and gets the news no father wants to hear.

Britain Afloat BBC2, 20.30
CW
Mary-Ann found her passion for boats at the age of eight when she fell in love with Narrow Boats. As a keen archaeologist and anthropologist she is passionate about understanding how objects and technology shapes the way we live. Britain Afloat explores the regional distinctiveness of boat design and the floating way of life, from the modest coracle - whose shape was adapted to suit individual rivers across Britain - to the imposing Thames sailing barges - boats that helped build London. In the first episode Mary-Ann discovers the boat that helped build Victorian London and played an important part at Dunkirk. There are still about 30 of these boats on the water (once there were more than 2,000) though nowadays the emphasis is very much on pleasure, something Mary-Ann experiences for herself when she joins the annual Thames Barge match.

Antiques Roadshow BBC1, 20.00
CW
Antiques Roadshow returns for a new series with an episode from the magnificent Castle Howard in Yorkshire, in which the 40th anniversary of the series will be celebrated. Fiona Bruce interviews veteran expert David Battie who holds the record as the longest serving member of the team about his favourite memories from the hundreds of shows he has attended. Bruce Parker, the programme’s first ever presenter, speaks with Fiona Bruce on how the programme has changed over the course of 40 years. Plus there are classic finds aplenty. Could a pencil sketch bought for a few pounds really be a lost work by Renoir? A rare letter in which Charles Darwin admits he made a mistake in The Origin Of Species confounds the programme’s books expert and a diamond drop earring sent recently in the post to one visitor proves the perfect show closer.

Movie fanatic Sam may be born and bred in Kent, but with a love of all things American, he sounds more Hollywood than British. Sam, who is autistic, is looking for his leading lady and hopes his collection of 44 bottles of aftershave might help. At 35, robotics engineer Donovan is the last one in his group of friends to find love. Donovan has brittle bones which has lead to over 80 fractures in his life. His condition has also affected his growth - at around 4’10’, he feels his height puts women off. Can he bag his first ever second date? 100 Year Old Driving School ITV1, 21.00
CW
In the third and final episode, RoSPA set up their mobile hub at a fire station in Bristol and among those who arrive to be tested is former tank commander John Hamilton. Now in his 100th year, John may know how to drive a Bren gun carrier, but he’s never actually taken a driving test. While he is confident of passing, things don’t get off to a great start when he hits a kerb within seconds of setting off on his assessment. One man with a point to prove is 100-year-old Geoffrey Gillow, whose daughter wants him to stop driving. Geoffrey is determined to pass with flying colours and show his daughter he’s safe to drive. For 91-year-old Patricia Deacon, driving is more for her husband Geoff than herself after he suffered a stroke, preventing him from getting behind the wheel. A former teacher, Pat is not the easiest of pupils - insisting on being addressed as Mrs Deacon - and she isn’t keen on anyone grabbing her steering wheel or talking to her while she drives, whether it’s her husband or a RoSPA examiner. Can she win over her assessor?

San Miguel de Abona Romería
The 24th San Miguel de Abona Romería (Harvest Fair) welcomes the ‘pilgrims’ who, every year, make this day the most festive and cheerful of all fiestas and fill the town streets with typical local customs and traditions. The celebration begins at the Church of St Michael the Archangel with a sung mass, followed by the procession which starts from the San Miguel Cooperative (CASMI) and includes carts and folk groups from San Miguel de Abona and neighbouring parts. Hundreds of people take part in the procession, which ends in the Square at St Michael’s Church and is followed by an open-air dance to band music.

It’s all about ...the look hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
NO ONE tells you at what age you shouldn’t have gorgeous hair. And you shouldn’t be pigeon-holed into an age group and told how to have your hair, just because you’re now of a certain age. Keeping up to your colour and style isn’t an age thing; it’s part of who you are, and what you want the world to see of your image. There’s never a time to think: “Oh well, I’m 60/70/80. Who cares what I look like?” We do, at Robot Hair, here in Los Cristianos, and we believe that every woman, no matter what her age, has the right to still feel good about her hair image.
The times I’ve heard: “Well, I’m old now” or “I don’t have the face for that”. You’re only as young as you feel. There’s always a small miracle that can be performed, hair-wise, and there is never a head of hair that can’t be transformed. Don’t look at your peers, and those around you of a similar age. And don’t be dragged down the road of old-lady land,
unless you’re kicking and screaming. Taking off a few years with the right cut, and, maybe, colour, is all a matter of confiding in your stylist. Leave it to us to guide you in the right direction. We, at Robot, specialise in hair makeovers, and love transforming any age group. As long as you’re willing to experiment, we have the ideas!
Absolutely fabulous, sweetie By Carl pattison
A WEEK to be proud of … that’s what London Fashion Week is all about. From last weekend to this, the capital gave us more than a few reasons to state that London still is one of the fashion capitals of the world. This inspirational week, of all that is fashionable for the upcoming year, is taking place in central London’s Store Studios. Showcasing designers from Top Shop to Tommy Hilfiger, the best of London’s fashionistas were there to cast their critical eyes over the offerings of many a global fashion house. Burberry, and Versus from Versace, stole the shows with their stunning collections, amid air-kisses and looks over dark glasses. It is the UK’s ultimate fashion experience, and one where all the best designers compete to illustrate that they still regard London Fashion Week as one of the best places to reveal their up-and-coming collections.

ONE of the problems with many of the newbuild properties nowadays is that they tend to be smaller than the ones constructed before. In addition, many properties here were originally built as holiday homes, and storage was, therefore, low on the list of priorities. But if you own or rent a property, and spend more than a few weeks in it at a time, you will need to maximise all the space you do have. The problem is compounded in that many decorating schemes now call for a modern, rather minimalist, approach, where there is actually very little on display. So it’s obviously vital to make the best possible use of all the space you have in your property, without having lots of clutter lying around to ruin your interior design. De-clutter on a regular basis, getting rid of all those magazines, books and papers you will never get round to reading, and perhaps storing your outof-season clothes in vacuum storage bags
under the bed. Consider putting a weatherproof cupboard on the terrace to store cleaning essentials, for example. There are several, clever ways you can achieve more-efficient storage by using space that would, otherwise, be wasted. For example, coffee and corner tables with storage inside for those magazines, and even the remote controls. Hydraulic beds are exceptionally useful, as they lift up with the mattress and bedding still in place, revealing a huge storage space that would otherwise be vacant. Another way of ensuring that you eke out every spare inch of space is to use a carpenter to make furniture to fit right to the edges of every nook and cranny. That space under the stairs could become a bookcase,
an enclosed cupboard for shoes and cleaning materials, or even a bed for the dog! Cupboards and wardrobes built into alcoves, or made to fit a particular space, are more economical than you might think, and, when there is a place for everything, and everything is in its place, there’s no clutter on show. A dining table, suitable for two, can double up as a desk, and be extended when you have guests. Bookcases can be used to separate different areas of the same room, giving you an opportunity to display your precious books and ornaments. By combining all these tips and tricks, you can keep all your personal effects around you, without your home appearing overcrowded. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789729.

WE hear, quite often, on the television or in the press, that the electric car is a thing of the future. Is this a reality, or is modern technology coming with too high a price tag, and too many dangers? We are already seeing many large car parks and supermarket car parks as well as some garages installing facilities for the charging of electric cars. That being said, there are electric and hybrid cars on the road here, but they are very few and far between. Consider, for example, the many people who live in apartments, without a garage space or garage. If, in the future, they choose to purchase an electric car, where and how would they charge it overnight? We are told that these cars
are silent, and better for the pollution levels and the ozone layer because they are not contaminating the atmosphere. However, are silent cars a good thing? Apparently, not quite as good as manufacturers thought, as there is new legislation coming into force in Europe on the 1st July 2019, and, later that year, in the US. This new law is being brought in because noise has always been associated with safety when in a car. Other road users are able to hear potential problems, including accidents or incidents, as well as being
able to see them. This is true for pedestrians, because they can often avoid potential injury by taking evasive action when they hear the noise of an impending accident or crash. This legislation will affect all types of these cars, be they hybrid, plugin hybrid, 100% electric, extended-range electric and those that form hydrogen fuel cells. The legislation will force manufacturers to ensure that these “silent” cars emit a noise of some kind, and also that the noise cannot be switched off. In Europe, the exact
requirements have yet to be confirmed, but it is thought that the recommendations in the current draft (from 2011) state that a speed of 20kph was the optimum, noiseproducing speed. In Europe, the 2019 date will only refer to new models, with those already being on the road having a timescale to make adaptations until 2021. This leads us to ask what kind of noise will these cars emit? Something like we see in hi tech, sci-fi films, beeps, or some other sound? What is certain is that it would have to be unique, and verbal commands, such as those sometimes heard on
35 CW
lorries of “Caution - vehicle reversing” or similar, is unlikely to be acceptable. The European proposals ask for the sound to be a continuous one, and it must provide sufficient information to pedestrians and other vulnerable road users; one assumes the latter being cyclists, or similar. It also states that it must be easily identifiable from the normal sound of the vehicle, and that it should sound similar to a vehicle of the same category as an internal combustion engine. What’s the point, then? From the point of view of a blind person (and this comes from the associations who work with the blind across Europe), they state, quite correctly, that a vehicle MUST be heard, regardless of its location or speed. Also, noise-generation systems must take account of when a vehicle is in quieter conditions. The same system must inform of the proximity of the car, even in the case of a temporary stoppage. It must mimic sounds generated by “normal” cars performing similar manoeuvres, and, as we have already pointed out, the system CANNOT be disconnected.

Keep calm… go nuts! A N X I E T Y problems are the most - common mental illness in America, affecting 40 million adults over the age of 18. To put it into perspective, that makes up a whopping 18% of the population! Anxiety can be dangerous to your mental and physical health. To cure or prevent anxiety outbreaks, incorporating stressreducing techniques, like meditation and exercise, are a must! But that’s not enough. To effectively tackle anxiety, you need a holistic approach,
which includes eliminating stressinducing foods, and adding in those which are mood-regulating. What is anxiety? Anxiety is your body’s natural response to stress or dangerous situations. Often referred to as a “fightor-flight” state, anxiety can become crippling when it occurs on a regular basis, or flares up in inappropriate circumstances. Chronic anxiety can take a serious toll on your health. Some of the negative side effects include: High blood pressure Insomnia Digestive issues Panic attacks While the causes of stress are varied, the most-common causes include: Thyroid problems and imbalances Hormonal imbalances Anxiety- stimulating foods, like alcohol and sugar Foods that cause anxiety Simple food choices can make the difference between anxious mood swings and more-stable mood wavelengths. Steer clear of these foods and ingredients that have been proven to not only cause anxiety- symptoms, but speed up and worsen downward spirals. High-sugar foods:
sugar causes bloodsugar spikes and dips (like a bloodsugar rollercoaster) throughout your day, increasing anxiety outbreaks Caffeine: too much coffee causes anxiety; try limiting coffee and black tea to no more than once a day Alcohol: puts your body into an anxiety-
like state, and makes it difficult to manage stress Processed and refined flours: these foods act similarly to sugar in the body, leading to bloodsugar fluctuations and mood swings Foods to reduce anxiety: Eliminating anxietycausing foods is half of the equation. In
addition to cutting out foods that lead to anxiety flare-ups, it’s important to add foods into your diet to limit, prevent and cure anxiety outbreaks. These foods are natural remedies for anxiety: High-calcium foods: calcium’s mineral content is relaxing, and reduces anxiety outbreaks
Magnesium-rich foods: nuts, sea vegetables and avocados’ highmagnesium content helps to calm nerves Omega-3 fatty acids: reduce inflammation and stabilise mood Vitamin-B foods: grass-fed beef, brewer’s yeast and green, leafy vegetables are all high in Vitamin B, to help regulate mood.

A special range of coffee and home-made cakes will be available to buy, and there will also be prize raffles to tempt you. The kettles will be on between 10am-noon at the Zizi Bar, and 10.30-noon at The Devon Arms, and, no doubt, elsewhere in the South.

POPULAR Tenerife entertainer Cy Benson, in conjunction with the Arona, Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio Lions Club, hosted a special event last Saturday. It was held to raise funds for Steve Delsey at the Albatros Bar, Costa del Silencio, and Cy was joined by numerous other Tenerife entertainers. Fellow-artiste Steve, who is poorly and awaiting major surgery in hospital, has given his time, generously, over the years to many charities and fund-raising events, and his entertainment comrades were only too happy to reciprocate. Among the artistes, all performing free of charge, were Cy Benson, Aidy Evans,
Sean King, Chrissy Dean, Joanne Cassidy, Pat Wilson, Just Jake, Derrick Swain, Sammy Jay and Garry J. Raffle prizes were donated by the Albatros Bar’s Don Davies, and a sum of 500 euros was donated by the Lions Club. A similar sum was raised for Steve from the Raffle and Auction during the afternoon, as, again, the local people of Silencio and surrounding areas gave generously to support the event. Sarah Found, a member of the Albatros staff, swam from Las Galletas to Palm Mar earlier that day to raise funds for the Cancer Bus, and she kindly donated 50 euros to Steve’s fund.
In all, a grand sum of 1,050 euros was raised for Steve, so a big thanks to all the entertainers, and to those who turned out to support Steve. The great outdoors LETTING your new cat/kitten outside for the first time can be a nerve-racking experience. There are a few things you might want to do, to make it easier for you both.
Because of potential infection with diseases such as enteritis or cat flu, a kitten shouldn’t be allowed outside until it’s fully vaccinated. First things first, however. Before you allow your kitten free access outdoors, make sure it's been neutered (at around four months). Your cat should have a means of identification, a safety collar and a microchip; it saves the hassle of someone taking or reporting your cat, thinking it's abandoned or lost. It’s also useful to get your kitten/cat used to being called to come to you. You can do this by offering little
treats, so that it’s happy to respond. You’ll then have a bit of control when you go outside to call it in. If you've adopted an adult cat, it's best to let it settle into its new home first, although, if you already

have other cats who go outdoors, this may be quite hard. Some cats will tolerate this well, yet others will look to go outside, sooner rather than later. Choose a quiet time, just before mealtime, when you
can accompany it outside, allowing it to explore the new environment. Excitements, such as other cats, dogs or loud noises, are best avoided the first couple of times, so that your kitten/ cat can concentrate on you, and isn’t spooked. Don’t be alarmed if it disappears into some shrubbery; it's normal, and enables it to get acclimatised to the new surroundings, in a place where it can observe without being seen. Leave a door or window open and, after 30-60 minutes, call it indoors for its meal. Repeat this the following day. Most cats, even adult ones, adapt extremely quickly to exploring their new territory outside. They might be nervous at first, but most take to it like a duck to water. Adoptions Please consider adopting a kitten/cat from us. All our cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.cats-welfare-

Loving homes needed
WE have more than 220 dogs at our refuge, all looking for new, loving homes, so please do come and visit us to see if, maybe, one dog is the one for you. Every animal has a full, clean bill of health, and is fully inoculated, micro-chipped, passported and castrated. This is compulsory with all our dogs, in our
attempts to reduce the large numbers of unwanted litters, here on our island of Tenerife. There is no adoption fee, but donations are welcomed towards the upkeep and running of the refuge. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. a substitute the previous week and was enjoying his first start. But the ref said he had to go within a minute of the restart. Absent players meant another promotion from the youth section, Adrian Garcia coming on for his debut after 73 minutes. And he was just in time to enjoy a Kevin Castro penalty, which put Marino 2-0 ahead. Ramon reduced the lead with just two minutes remaining, but it couldn’t stop Marino from winning and moving back up to sixth position in their Tercera Division group. This Sunday, Marino host San Fernando at their Las Americas stadium at 12.30pm, which is half-anhour later than their usual kick-off.

They took a depleted squad to Los Llanos, on La Palma island, and returned with all three points. The result was even more impressive because they played the second half a man short, having had Prince sent off for a second booking. Marino made short work of taking control, Zeben scoring from a counterattack after seven minutes, and it stayed that way to the break. Ghana-born Dadzie Prince, who was playing in China last season, appeared as
Women’s football
Sampson axing leaves a huge question mark THE Football Association will have to explain why England women’s football team manager Mark Sampson was sacked, after a month which began with claims of racism. Martin Glenn, the governing body’s chief executive, said the decision was obvious after he became aware of the “full detail” of inappropriate relationships the Welshman had with female players while manager of Bristol Academy. It is the second time in under a year that Glenn has been forced to convene a press conference hastily, to explain the departure of an England manager for off-field reasons. Sam Allardyce, then managing the main England team briefly, necessitated that meeting. Questions about whether due diligence was performed in the hiring of Sampson are bound to be asked. It is understood that claims made by former England striker Eni Aluko of bullying, harassment and racial remarks, prompted a whistle-blower outside the
FA to urge Glenn to read the full report into safeguarding allegations made against Sampson. They relate to Sampson’s time at Bristol Academy, where he worked first with youngsters, aged 10-16, at the centre of excellence and, later, as the senior first-team coach. The allegations, made by more than one player, are said by FA chairman Greg Clarke to range from the “trivial to the very serious”. Yet Sampson was deemed fit to continue as England manager after the FA’s “safeguarding and investigations” team conducted inquiries when the allegations were first made, in March 2014. Glenn, who joined the FA 12 months after that, insists he was first told of the investigation in October 2015. He read the full report only last Wednesday, and later passed it on to Clarke. Glenn said he regretted that Sampson had been allowed to occupy a position of such power and influence for almost four years. “There was a full investigation, a proper investigation, and an assessment process, and the report concluded in March 2015 that he was deemed not to be a safeguarding risk,” said the
Chief Executive. “However, the full report of that investigation was only made known to me last week. On reading it, I immediately shared it with Greg, and we were both deeply concerned with the contents. “Let’s be really clear: no laws were broken. Greg and I are not able to challenge the professional views of our safeguarding experts. “We thought the conduct issues raised in the report was the problem. Mark had overstepped the professional boundaries between player and coach. We know that coaches are in a potential position of
power, and that position mustn’t be abused.” On the pitch, Sampson has been the most successful England manager of recent times, his departure coming less than 24 hours after his team, semi-finalists at this summer’s Euro 2017, beat Russia 6-0 in their first World Cup qualifying match. After the first goal went in, all 11 players, including the goalkeeper, sprinted to embrace him in the dugout. It was an orchestrated demonstration of support for the manager in the wake of the Aluko allegations. The 34-year-old’s contract was set to expire in June
2019, but he was informed over the phone by Glenn on Wednesday afternoon that it would be terminated immediately. Sampson was clearly upset. Glenn promised that an investigation into claims made by Aluko that he had made racial remarks to her and another player, Drew Spence, who is mixed race, would continue. That investigation, led by barrister Katharine Newton QC, was reopened after it emerged that many of the main protagonists had not been interviewed. And while many of the current squad gave their support for Sampson vocally, former players Lianne Sanderson and Katie Champan said they also felt discriminated against during his reign. FA executives had already been summoned by the Government’s culture, media and sport select committee on 18th October, to explain their handling of the whole situation. Should Glenn and Clarke attend parliament, they are likely to be questioned on why they did not request sight of the full safeguarding report sooner, given the prominence Sampson occupied in the women’s game.

CD Tenerife
All fright on the night By Colin Kirby
EVEN a manic clown with a balloon wouldn’t have been as scary as the horror show Tenerife served up at Cordoba on Sunday. There was no drive, no clear game-plan, and only keeper Dani Hernandez emerged with credit. Alberto, normally a fierce competitor, was in for Vitolo. But he was extremely subdued, and that left the midfield ineffective. Malbasic had a decent chance from the left in the opening minutes, but he fired straight at the keeper. However, most of the action was down the other end. Raul Camara had to make a desperate goal-mouth clearance, the ball flashing dangerously near his own goal, and his nerves were shared by left-back Camille, who played like a novice. Longo, who was having a quiet game, managed a soft, curling shot which the home keeper took calmly. Dani looked confident between the Tenerife posts, and a high, speculative Cordoba shot was dealt with expertly as he backpedalled to make a great catch. A diving save soon after was also inspiring. Cordoba, who have had a shaky start to the season, were enjoying the room Tenerife allowed them.
Cordoba 2 CD Tenerife 0 And after several close efforts from the home side, Tenerife looked to be limping to the break with the game goal-less. But the ref awarded a harsh penalty against Camille. Alfaro, a former Tenerife hero, took the spot-kick and aimed it at the bottom corner of his goal, but Dani dived superbly to tip the ball aside. The optimistic felt it had to get better in the second half, bt it was not to be. In
fact, it got worse! The Tenerife attack was getting little service, and Longo struggled against his big markers. Bulky Serb Malbasic seemed wasted on the left. It was obvious that he should be playing as the central target man to take the knocks and let Longo play off him. However, coach Pep Marti didn’t see it that way. Dani made a brave intervention in a goalmouth scramble, and Cordoba shot over the bar, but the breakthrough came after 63 minutes.
Guardiola, who found himself with plenty of space, fired a strong shot through the heart of the Tenerife defence to take the lead. Changes were long overdue, and Bryan Acosta, back from Honduras duty, made his full debut in place of Aitor Sanz. Casadesus was not far behind him, taking over from Tayron. Acosta never got into the game, but at least Casadesus showed some promise, beating two defenders before forcing a save from the home keeper. Montañes completed the
changes when he swapped with the almost-invisible Juan Carlos Real. It was all a bit of a mess by now… headless chickens with no purpose. Malbasic raised hopes of a draw, only to be beaten to a ball on the edge of the box by the home keeper. And there was time for one more clanger. Dani could only half-clear an injury-time attack, but the ball fell kindly to defender Camille, who had plenty of time to walk the ball upfield. Instead, he froze and was robbed easily by Caballero, who tucked a shot past Dani to end Tenerife’s dismal night.
The Royal redemption! Cordoba 1 CD Tenerife 4 SWEEPING changes for the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) worked wonders as CD Tenerife turned on the style, and they could easily have bumped up the score. Brian Martin showed his growing maturity up front, Casadesus tucked in behind him, adding flair and creativity to the attack, and Aveldaño looked comfortable in defence, as well as adding his ability in the air at setpieces. The biggest revelation, though, was left-back Inaki, very much the forgotten man of the squad. He defended solidly and his runs down the flank ripped Cordoba wide open. Yet the hosts, initially, appeared to be carrying on from the league game four days previously. Markovic was the big threat, just missing with a clever chip before opening the scoring after five minutes, following some hesitant defending from Alberto. But Tenerife warmed to their task and hit back quickly, Martin timing his run to perfection and beating two defenders to level the score. Aveldaño looked to have taken the lead with a bullet header, but a
defender cleared it off the line with a last-gasp hook. Carlos Abad, in goal for Tenerife, had a couple of nervous moments, but he grew in confidence. And on the half-hour, Inaki picked up the ball deep and ran the Cordoba defence ragged before slipping the ball to Casadesus, who shot CDT ahead. Abad showed his worth with two close-range saves in succession as Romero threatened, to ensure the half-time advantage. Aitor Sanz replaced Montañes just after the restart as Cordoba tried to get back into the tie, but Mena blasted a good chance high. Inaki (pictured), in full flight again, caused chaos with his cross and Vallejo
tried to clear, only to put the ball in his own net. It left Tenerife coasting. Malbasic replaced Tayron and caused more problems for the home side, while Martin went close but had to settle for a corner. Carlos thwarted Cordoba with a great save low at the post, but the home team had most to worry about. In the dying minutes, Tenerife capped a fine display with a cheeky back-heeled goal from Aveldaño to exact revenge for the weekend’s league defeat. Now, coach Pep Marti has some tough selection decisions to make for the home game tomorrow (Saturday) against Alcorcon, because his shadow squad did him proud.

And it ended all-square, with both teams unbeaten as Scruffy’s pinched the trebles. Despite a 106 check-out for Sundowners’ Brian, a 180 from Daddy Cool, plus superb darts from the travelling Pas O Nadas A, earned them a comfortable 7-1 win. The highlights of Spear Chuckers’ visit to Palms Pool Bar were the best chips ever… and a 6-2 win, including Tomo’s 180 and Rob’s 171. Picassos’ 7-1 defeat by Phoenix appears convincing, yet most games
went to the deciding leg, and things really could have been different. Emerald Lounge welcomed Ourplace Playboys and, again, finishing was the key, Playboys taking their chances to record a 6-2 win. Loch Inn A travelled to Waterfall, and Wayne started with a 123 finish and a 14-dart leg, followed by Paul’s first maximum. It was then nip and tuck all the way to the 701 game, which went to the Loch Inn boys, along with a 5-3 victory. Marilyns B hosted Sandys, and doubles were again the difference between the teams as the latter claimed a 6-2 win. The clash between Naughty Nautas v Nauta Nomads swung both ways until the last game, when Naughtys snatched the trebles and a 4-4 draw. The same score was noted at Lady Macs, who triumphed in the threesome to take a creditable draw against The Red Devils, for whom Luc, the maestro, hit a 180.

Dot won the first game in style for Nutty Nautas, but they were then put to the sword by Ourplace Breakaways, who went on to win 6-2. Buzzin B’s were still in fine form as they

went to Pas O Nadas B and took home a 5-3 win. Ourplace Playgirls welcomed Bar Leones, and, in a high-scoring match with excellent finishes, the girls came out on top, courtesy of a 5-3 scoreline.
With the half-way point approaching, it appears that all teams are looking forward to the return fixtures.

*Don’t forget that this Sunday (24th Sept), there’s a Captains’ Meeting at Sundowners Bar, from 1pm.
Basketball
Hell of a swim Mixed bag of friendlies WITH the new season looming, Iberostar Tenerife have been putting in the miles with a couple of away friendlies, which produced mixed results. TENO is the point where the west and north coast of Tenerife meet. The views are glorious, the cliffs towering, and the sea-life is plentiful. But these visions will probably be put to the back of the swimmers’ minds during Sunday’s 12km swim down the coast to Los Gigantes. It’s the longest distance of the three choices in Travesia Murallas del
Infierno (crossing the walls of hell), and certainly the most challenging. The big race, from Punta de Teno, starts at 8am; the 6.5km race from Masca has a 10am start, while the short splash around Los Gigantes bay gets off at 11am. The finish point for all swimmers is Playa Los Guios, just behind the marina, and presentations will be made at 4pm on the beach.
They won 60-75 at Andorra last Friday, captain Nico Richotti leading the way on 11 points. New signing Rosco Allen, from Hungary, made his debut and racked up 10 points, equal with Ferran Bassas. The game was tight for the first three quarters, but Tenerife stepped up a gear for the final portion and blitzed it 25-10. The action switched on Sunday to Barcelona, where they suffered an
82-62 defeat against Barca Lassa. The home side piled the pressure on Tenerife and took the first three quarters 22-16, 26-16, 18-14. Only in the final quarter did Tenerife
apply the brakes, restricting them to a 16-16 tie. Mike Tobey, the New-Yorkborn summer signing, offered the main resistance with 15 points, but he lacked support.
