The festival for everyone

Continued from Front That’s when the traditional “romería”, or pilgrim parade, takes place through the town’s main street. Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, who announced the Festival on Wednesday, said the programme “reflected the harmony between the past, the present and the future of the town”. He added: “The fiestas are a commitment made by the people of Adeje to their patrons, hundreds of years ago. “Everyone is in a rush these days. But, for the next two weeks, we can also find time to remember our roots, to preserve and maintain our traditions. Growth is only possible with healthy roots.” Folk groups, bands, and choirs from Rivera, Salamanca and Gran Canaria, along with those from the neighbouring town of Guía de Isora, will also be taking part, reflecting the wider participation the fiestas always encourage. The events begin tomorrow (Saturday) with the traditional descent of Our Lady of the Incarnation, from her throne in the main Santa Úrsula church, and

the hoisting of the local flag. For the next fortnight, the town will enjoy a variety of acts; traditional and modern, young and old, musical and theatrical. The varying neighbourhoods in the borough are

also represented throughout the events by young women, or “reinas”, of Adeje. And though the borough does not elect one Festival Queen, all seven chosen will celebrating together, instead.

The women were presented to the Mayor on Wednesday at the end of a press conference to launch the programme. As is usual, the second Monday of the month, 9th October this year, is a local fiesta, with schools and many local offices closed. There will be a host of children’s activities taking place in the town on that day, and throughout the festival. These events include the science festival, the youth “Factoria de Arte” and the main parade next Saturday (7th Oct), as well as the evening street parties, with live music and dancing in the Plaza de España. These will also see residents and visitors enjoying themselves, and, said the Mayor: “I invite everyone to the fiestas.” The celebrations culminate in the traditional “romería” on Sunday, 15th October, from 1pm. It will feature oxen-drawn carts travelling up the Calle Grande, as well as many people in traditional dress, singing, dancing, and handing out food and drink to passers-by. The Mayor said the town’s festivities were also a time

to build new memories, and for members of all communities living in Adeje to come together and celebrate. He added: “The fiestas are also celebrated in different ways, in different epochs. Today, Adeje is in a tourism epoch, and this, too, is part of our character.” The full programme of events is available, on-line in English, on the main Adeje Town Hall pages. This week’s events Tomorrow (Saturday) 6pm: Mass in Santa Ursula parish church, sung by the church choir. Traditional descent of Our Lady of the Incarnation from her altar throne 8-11pm: Science Festival, at Plaza de España Sunday (1st Oct) 8am-8pm: Science Festival, at Plaza de España Wednesday 8pm: Final of Roque del Conde Tournament, at Adeje Municipal ground Friday (6th Oct) 10pm: Gala Show “Adeje en el Mundo”. O’Leary digging Ryanair into an even-deeper hole TROUBLED airline Ryanair, not content with infuriating more than 300,000 customers by cancelling flights for six weeks, has now announced it is scrapping a further 1,800 flights until March 2018, which will affect a further 400,000 people.

Two men weeded out A LARGE collection of marijuana plants were seized from a greenhouse in Tamaimo, Santiago del Teide on Monday by Guardia Civil officers. Some of the 400 plants had grown to 2½ metres, and

two men were arrested and charged with a publichealth offence. They were spotted moving the marijuana plants from one greenhouse to another because they were flowering.

Prisoners’ pigeon post!

INMATES confined to Tenerife II penitentiary have been using messenger pigeons to receive contraband from the outside world, mainly mobile phones and drugs. Prison officers found a pigeon in the prison grounds last week with a mobile phone strapped to

its back. The poor bird was lying on it back, pushed to its limits because the cargo was too heavy. The discovery merely confirmed officers’ suspicions because it wasn’t the first pigeon to appear in the penitentiary. But it was definitely the first to be found with contraband. Officials also believe the pigeons are employed to smuggle illegal contraband in and out of the facility.

The Irish company, now offering flights to France for under a fiver, and to much of the rest of Europe for less than a tenner, has already axed more than 2,000 routes.

Now it says it will remove 25 of its 400 planes from November this year until March, in a move they claim will prevent further flight cancellations. But it will almost certainly pay a high price because the saga continues. It has now emerged that the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is launching “enforcement action” against Ryanair for failing to give customers accurate information about their rights, following its mass of flight cancellations. Ryanair chief Michael O’Leary is also offering 315,000 customers a £40 or 40-euro travel voucher, allowing them to book an offpeak flight on any Ryanair service between October and March 2018. The vouchers must be redeemed by the end of next month, with flights to be taken by 20th March. However, they can be used only during off-peak times, with the Christmas holidays and Easter not covered by the vouchers. Oh, and Festive services between 20th December and 7th January are also excluded. And, says Sky News, infants are also non-eligible. The firm says it has been forced into the cancellations

after miscalculating their pilots’ holidays. But taking more flights out of service means, says a Ryanair spokesman, the company will be able “to roster all the extra pilot leave necessary in October, November and December”. As a result, 34 routes are being suspended for the winter season, from November to March 2018. These include popular routes such as Stansted to Edinburgh and Glasgow, Gatwick to Belfast, Newcastle to Faro, and Glasgow to Las Palmas. The budget airline will also operate 10 fewer aircraft from next April, and O’Leary said: “While over 99% of our 129 million customers will not have been affected by any cancellations or disruptions, we deeply regret any doubt we caused existing customers… about Ryanair’s reliability, or the risk of further cancellations.” Ryanair had already binned 2,100 flights in the six weeks to the end of October, as it struggled with landing planes on time, reportedly, through a shortage of available pilots. But last week, O’Leary launched an extraordinary attack on his pilots, claiming they did not have a difficult job. He also scoffed at complaints from short-haul pilots of suffering from fatigue because of a packed working schedule, suggesting it must be down to their activities outside of work. O’Leary admitted he had

been a “clown”, and had made a “major boo-boo” over the current, cancelledflights crisis, which has affected 315,000 passengers, leaving some stranded abroad for up to nine days. He also accused some pilots of being “precious about themselves”, and “full of their own self-importance”. But despite claiming previously that an exodus of disgruntled pilots had nothing to do with the company’s shock decision to cancel more than 2,000 flights, O’Leary revealed that his firm aimed to recruit 120 new pilots within “the next week or two”. The billionaire Irishman, having apologised to outraged passengers caught up in the initial mess, has now agreed to pay for alternative flights, or offer refunds to all customers affected. And he should, under European law, meet the accommodation and food costs of those stranded abroad. But people who have had to cancel holidays before even starting them, have complained that they cannot get their money back for non-refundable hotel bookings, or car hire. Alex Neill, managing director of Which? home and product services, said: “This situation is a complete and utter shambles that now extends to up to nearly three-quarters of a million people. “The news means that for some of its passengers, Ryanair has effectively cancelled Christmas.”

FLAG -WAVING crowds cheered Guardia Civil officers heading to Catalonia on Wednesday, ahead of Sunday’s bitterly- controversial, independence referendum, which still may not go ahead. Dozens of supporters belted out the football chants Yo Soy Espagnol (I’m Spanish) and A Por Ellos (Go and get them) as police reinforcements left Huelva, Andalucia. Similar scenes were played out in other Andalucian towns and cities, which spoke volumes for the antiindependence sector of Catalonia. Meanwhile, a senior judge at Catalonia High Court issued an order on Wednesday evening, instructing all the region’s police forces, the Catalans’ Mossos, Guardia Civil, National Police and Local Police, to work together to shut down the referendum. It echoed a similar order issued by the Public Prosecutor’s Office (PPO) the previous day. Officers must prevent public buildings and premises from being used as polling stations, or, otherwise, to

Referendum vote’s still in the balance prepare or organise the referendum between now and Sunday. If any of them are opened, or used for those purposes, the police must close them down. They must also impound any materials used to prepare or hold the referendum, including computers, and are instructed to go after the logistical and vote-counting centres. The High Court judge reaffirmed the role of the policing co-ordinator, a Home - Office -appointed Guardia Civil colonel, for the next few days in Catalonia. The PPO has also been told that the judge is in charge of anti-referendum policing orders, now that a criminal investigation has now been opened and is being processed through the courts. Wednesday’s ruling was the first judicial interpretation of the Catalan government’s actions to ignore previous court orders about the vote, and the preparations involved. The judge was ruling on complaints filed by the

PPO against members of the regional Catalan government for disobeying Constitutional Court rulings on the referendum. The Catalan government, she said, was “clearly” not paying attention to those rulings, or to those orders issued by the High Court to shut down referendum websites. She added: “Such a reluctant attitude, and the provision of all means at their disposal to hold the suspended referendum on Sunday, clearly infringes the decisions of the Constitutional Court.”

Spanish authorities have hired cruise ships off Barcelona and Tarragona to house up to 6,000 extra police officers. And the Mossos have also been ordered by the PPO to close and cordon off the centres until 9pm on Sunday, and make it clear that the police cordon is not to be broken. They have been instructed to warn people they will be liable to criminal prosecution if they do. There were tense scenes last week when 40,000 protesters took to Barcelona’s streets after the arrests

of 14 Catalan officials involved in the independence vote. There were scuffles between protesters and police, with Guardia Civil cars vandalised. Yet the Catalan Government refuses to bow, defying a Constitutional Court ruling to halt the vote. Catalan First Minister Carles Puigdemont, has confirmed that his Parliament would declare independence from Spain in early October if a “Yes” vote were achieved. He added that if the central government managed to halt the vote, “someone would propose a unilateral declaration of independence, without any kind of a referendum on Sunday”. But it was not “currently” on his list of options. Puigdemont, in interviews with Associated Press and El Diario, published on Wednesday evening, said there was a “larger majority than before” wanting to vote. “Today, we are closer to a massive turn-out for the referendum than we were one month ago”, he said, without getting into specifics. Catalonia, an area in northeastern Spain housing 7.5 million people, accounts for 15% of Spain’s population and 20% of its economic output.

Knife-man has stolen 900 euros

A MAN has been arrested for committing two robberies in La Laguna, armed with a knife, stealing a total of 900 euros. He was said to have threatened an employee in one place with a knife. However, officers found the 42-year-old suspect in the vicinity of where he had been thieving, and arrested him. An investigation determined that he had pulled off another robbery in the area, on 12th September, with the same knife.

Balconer is hurt badly

A PERSON was seriously injured after falling when trying to jump from one balcony to another in a Las Americas apartment complex. It is known as balconing in Spain, and the incident took place at 6am on Wednesday, in Avenida Arquitecto Gómez Cuesta. Paramedics, who rushed to the scene, found the man had suffered a serious head injury and took him to Hospitén Sur for further medical treatment. National Police are investigating this incident.

Leg-break crash

AN English woman, aged 45, was hurt badly after being knocked down by a car in Torviscas Alto. It happened last week at 10.30pm on Avenida Austria, and paramedics arriving at the scene discovered she’d had a leg broken. The woman was taken to the nearby Quirón Hospital, in Costa Adeje, for further treatment. Local Police, with the driver’s co-operation, issued the corresponding accident report.

‘Strangler’ netted in cops’ commune raid

This is all a bit double Dutch! A RULE by the EU, which requires English to be the official language between pilots and air-traffic controllers, has come into force. And it even applies when both parties share a native tongue that is not English! The rule affects those airports with over 50,000 international flights operating per year, which means Madrid’s Rodolfo Suárez-Barajas and Barcelona’s El Prat alone will become “Englishonly”. But many others, such as those in the Canary and Balearic Islands, will still be able to choose the language of their choice. The EU’s aim is to streamline communications for maximum security, but pilots and air-traffic controllers having to speak English is not a problem, since being able to do so fluently is a basic requirement of their job. But Spain’s pilot unions, SEPLA and USCA, say it is “ludicrous” to require this, when both pilots and airtraffic controllers are native Spanish-speakers. Captains on board Iberia, Vueling and AirEuropa, all

three being Spanish carriers and, typically, staffed with natives, will have to talk in English to the control towers in Barcelona and Madrid, also staffed with natives. The two unions are critical that the move “has not taken into account the criteria of the professionals involved, and that using a language which is a foreign tongue to both, rather than the native one they share, is unlikely to bring about any potential air-safety improvements”. Union chiefs also say that previous research by the State Air Safety Agency (AESA) has shown that in a crisis situation, quickthinking and action is vital. And, they add, it is better for the people involved to use their mother tongue to communicate, to avoid misunderstandings or splitsecond delays which could “compromise security in delicate circumstances”. USCA secretary Luis Vidarte said: “We speak English every day and will carry on doing so, whenever the situation requires it. “But professionals should be allowed to choose the moment when they consider it more convenient to switch to their mother tongue.” USCA and SEPLA also point out the irony of a situation which means that pilots from

Spain can speak Spanish to air-traffic controllers anywhere in Latin America, given that natives share the same language. Yet they cannot use it when speaking to each other in Spain. “For effective communication, which, of course, is the ultimate aim, the best solution is, obviously, for airtraffic controllers and pilots to use the native language they have in common,” say the two unions. SEPLA has arranged to meet with Spain’s Public Works Ministry, which covers transport affairs nationally, some time this week. The Ministry of Development is meeting with the pilots to discuss how it would be possible to use both languages, while ensuring the highest levels of security. The unions who represent the pilots and air-trafficcontrol workers have asked the Government to put in a request to enable them to continue to use Spanish in certain circumstances, and not just English. The Government has been placed in a tricky position because Spain was one of the countries involved in drafting the new legislation. Officials pushing for these changes are also tight for time because they have to meet the deadlines set by the EU for its proposal to be successful.

A MAN accused of strangling a woman in France was among 24 people arrested by police during a raid on a long-established ‘hippy commune’ south of Granada, in Andalucia. The morning raid on the new-age settlement, in the Alpujarras, also unearthed thousands of marijuana plants, as well as illegal vehicles and animals. Police have brought 103 charges against the community members, who had been living in the valley below the town of Orgiva since the 1980s. The settlement is believed to have been set up by a retired nuclear scientist, who had become a member of the Hare Krishna movement. The police raid was launched this week after an American tourist claimed she had been sexually assaulted by a number of men in the Beneficio settlement. Police confirmed that they had seized a total of 2,320 marijuana plants in the raid, carried out by officers in dozens of cars and a helicopter. Four police forces were involved, and, among the group arrested - of various nationalities - was a 23-year-old, sought by the French authorities for, allegedly, strangling his wife. He was carrying the victim’s mobile phone at the time. Many of the crimes said to have been committed were against public health, and involved illegal wells, building and land-clearance in a protected area, inside Sierra Nevada Natural Park. Inmates describe it as a centre for “peace and harmony” and selfruling.

Guardia’s saviours

RUSSIAN mum Oxana Mulyukova, who was nine months’ pregnant, felt a pain across her stomach when she was in Playa Paraiso with her husband and daughter.

She then realised she was bleeding profusely, so her husband, Pavel, pointed their car towards Candelaria Hospital and drove there as quickly as possible. Happily, Guardia Civil officers Javier Merideño Maestre and Christian Chinea Hernández spotted the speeding car and pulled it over. Once they realised the

situation, the officers transferred the expectant mum to their police car, and got to the hospital in the nick of time, leaving dad and daughter to make their own way there. Oxana’s placenta had detached from her womb, causing internal bleeding, and it became a life-anddeath situation for both mother and baby. Thankfully, both are well and healthy, although baby Sofia was confined to the Intensive Care unit under observation. Candelaria medical team insisted the couple’s survival was down to the quick-thinking officers. Had they arrived five minutes later, the outcome really could have been fatal.

Seprona spikes illegal hunters OFFICERS from La Gomera’s Guardia Civil Nature Protection Service Seprona pounced on four men, aged 49-62, who were hunting illegally in San Sebastian. Three were from that area and the other from Tenerife capital Santa Cruz. They were also charged with the illegal possession of a weapon. Witnesses told the authorities that they were firing shots from a parked vehicle in Enchereda, in the San Sebastián municipality.

Once the police arrived at the scene, they asked the men if they had any weapons in the vehicle, and one admitted to having a rifle. A car search revealed a 22-gauge rifle with a built-in laser, along with a case and telescopic sight; a homemade muffler; ammunition; a bag holding 10 knives and a knife with traces of blood; binoculars and two animal bodies - a goat and a sheep - skinned and gutted. The men have been referred to La Gomera’s Court of San Sebastian.

Not such a gas for petrol cars in the capital IN just a matter of eight years, two-inten cars will not be allowed to be driven in Madrid, because of a new, “definitive” anti-air-pollution plan.

The city council has announced ‘heavy restrictions’ on traffic, including all private vehicles being banned from the central Gran Vía, which runs down to the main Puerta del Sol square. This will come into effect next June, together with increased one-hour slots for parking meters, additional ones to be installed in the suburbs outside the M-30 ring-road, and pavements to be widened. All cars which do not have the General Directorate of Traffic’s (DGT’s) “environmental kitemark” will be banned from the entire city from the start of the 2025 year, which, effectively, relates to one car in every five, or 20% of those currently on the road. Petrol cars registered prior to the year 2000, and diesel cars registered before 2006, are those which will not pass the DGT’s “environmentally-friendly” test. A priority, residentsonly area, will be set up for driving within the inner city inside the M-30, and they will be exempt from parking-meter costs if they have to be installed in traffic-heavy suburbs. Other measures, among the list of 30 drawn up by Manuela Carmena’s Government, include pedestrianising streets, replacing the local authority fleet and public-transport vehicles with electrically-powered cars and buses, and no parking within the M-30 inner city for the two-in-ten from the year 2020.

Restrictions will eventually allow only residents, public transport, public car-park users, guests, emergency vehicles, commercial and trade vehicles, emissionfree cars, motorbikes during the daytime only, those who own a parking space, and vehicles for the disabled or partially-disabled, in the city centre. Information boards will be set up to show where there are empty car-parking spaces and how many, so that drivers do not enter the city and travel around in circles for ages looking for a place. Software, including mobile phone Apps, will be created to enable motorists to reserve a space in advance. Metered spaces, or “blue bays”, will eventually be eliminated altogether, and “green bays” gradually reduced. Speed limits within the M-30 inner city will drop to 30km/hr(18.75mph).

Madrid has been pulled up repeatedly in the last seven years by the European Union for its exceptionallyhigh, air-pollution levels, and the council has been forced to impose periodic, day-long traffic bans when the smog becomes too dense. The situation has now reached a point where permanent action must be taken, and the city authority aims to cut its nitrous oxide (NOx) levels by 23% within the next 2½ years, with the aim of being re-branded as a “low-emissions city” by the year 2030. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), air-pollution is the direct cause of death of six million people worldwide every year. It also causes ongoing health problems for those who survive, such as headaches, nausea, fatigue, depression and respiratory conditions.

Man to woman - just like that! A SCAM artist tricked a transsexual into believing she could turn him from a man into a woman using magic. The “psychic medium”, from Valencia’s coastal town of Santa Pola, took advantage of the man’s vulnerability to convince him to fork out 2,300 euros for the sex-change sorcery, a court heard. The victim, who believes he is a woman born in a man’s body, contacted the medium over the internet. She told him in a WhatsApp conversation that she could change someone’s sex from male to female within a week. All he had to do was transfer 2,000 euros, then

follow her instructions to enable the magic to take effect. Once he made the payment she asked for another 500 euros for a “pact with the devil”, which was, she insisted, necessary to ensure that everything went smoothly. The gullible transsexual negotiated that sum down to 300 euros, but he still needed a personal loan to cover the costs. Deceit must be proved for the medium to be convicted of fraud, but the defence maintained that, since it was impossible to change someone’s sex using magic, the real problem was the plaintiff ’s extreme naivety.

May’s Brexit speech sparks expat survey BRITISH expats must participate in a poll concerning dual or Spanish nationality, says Anne Hernandez, co-founder of Expatiates in Spain. She set up the survey after Theresa May’s “vacuous” Brexit speech in Florence, Italy. And in its first 12 hours, nearly 200 people said they would be happy taking joint-nationality, if available. And more than 100 would not worry about becoming Spanish. The poll results will

be sent to the UK and Spanish Governments, because dual-nationality is unavailable for British residents in Spain now. May’s speech attracted criticism for not addressing,

adequately, the rights of 1.2 million British citizens living in the EU, including 300,000 in Spain. “I decided to set up the poll after May’s speech, which told us nothing,” Hernandez told online newspaper Olive Press. “Her speech showed how unimportant we are. We do not seem to count for anything.” Dual-nationality was recently given to 4,000 descendants of Spain’s expelled Sephardic Jewish community, as well as the surviving International Brigade members. Now, campaigners are urging the Spanish Government to do the same

for expats in Spain, who remain in limbo because of the Brexit uncertainties. A spokesperson from the UK Government’s “Department for Exiting the EU” said: “Theresa May gave commitments that the rights of EU citizens in the UK, and UK citizens in the EU, will be set out in our agreement on citizens’ rights. “And this will be fullyincorporated into UK law, making sure the UK courts can refer directly to the agreement. “All of these are reciprocal: they work for Brits in the EU and the EU27 in the UK.”

Simply something fishy about company’s tuna GUARDIA CIVIL officers are investigating seven people from an Almeria company, suspected of supplying contaminated tuna. There was an outbreak of histamine poisoning across Spain, including Andalucia and Murcia, which affected 105 people, and spread across four other European states. So worried was the Health Authority of the Junta de Andalucia that when it discovered that two batches of bad tuna had come from the same company, it demanded the withdrawal of the suspect fish and informed the Guardia Civil. After a detailed investigation, it has emerged that the batch control in the suspect company was so poor that it was impossible to identify, with certainty, which batches had been

delivered where. But it was possible to confirm that six deliveries were almost certainly contaminated. Although the company had recently introduced plans for hygiene control, it hadn’t actually complied with them; nor were there

any records of conservation of the fish, or length of time it had been stored. In addition, it was discovered that the company was telling customers the tuna had been caught in sustainable areas, using special lines,

when it had actually been caught in nets. If the accusations are proved, those interviewed may be convicted of a crime against public health, false documentation and a further crime against consumers.

End of an era ACTRESS Liz Dawn, Coronation Street’s Vera Duckworth, and actor Tony Booth, best known for his “Till Death Us Do Part” role, have both died. Liz Dawn, who played Vera Duckworth in the soap for 34 years, received many accolades from fellow Street actors on Tuesday, and her family were “devastated” by the death of the “incredible” 77-year-old. “She has been the love, light and inspiration in our lives, and we are bereft at her passing,” they added. Programme-maker ITV said: “We have been blessed to have Liz in our lives, as she was such a kind, considerate and caring friend and colleague. “As Coronation Street’s Vera Duckworth for so long, Liz brought so much joy and happiness to so many. She was a wonderful actress, who will forever be a true Coronation Street legend.” Tony Booth, the Liverpoolborn actor and political campaigner, died at the age of 85. He was born on 9th October 1931, and achieved national fame as Mike Rawlins, the bone-idle “Scouse git’ in the hilarious Till Death Us Do Part comedy series. He also appeared in three episodes of Coronation Street, alongside Pat Phoenix, better known as Elsie Tanner. After a 1979 accident, Tony was re-acquainted with Pat, and the two became lovers. They married in 1986, just days before she died of cancer. Pat was one of Tony’s four wives, and one of his children from a previous marriage is Cherie Booth, wife of ex-prime minister Tony Blair. Booth was a man of strong, left-wing views, and a former President of Equity, the actors’ union.

Renfe hits gravy train for high-speed system

An artist’s impression of the California bullet train

SPANISH stateowned railway operator Renfe has submitted an offer to develop the first phase of a project to bring high-speed rail to California. Renfe is partnering with Adif, which manages Spain’s railway infrastructure, and with other members of a consortium which hopes to win a contract to provide

advice on how to build a 1,300km line, linking Sacramento and San Francisco in the north of the state, with Los Angeles and San Diego in the south. Once finished, the line will connect Los Angeles and San Francisco in under three hours. And, when completed, it would be the first high-speed train service in the States. The California High Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) has issued a release detailing all four offers it

has received, including one from China, for this early phase of the project. The six-year contract for technical and commercial advice is worth an estimated 25m euros. The CHSRA is looking for an experienced partner which could, ultimately, also take charge of operations on the section between Silicon Valley and Central Valley. The contract for phase one will be awarded next Friday (6th October), and, if successful, the Renfe-

led consortium could then bid for a second phase to develop the line. The entire project is scheduled for a 2029 completion, the bullet trains covering a 1,287km distance at top speeds of 320km/h and stopping at 24 stations. The California high-speed rail system, together with the bullet train between Mecca and Medina, in Saudi Arabia, are Renfe’s two major international projects. Yet early this year, the

Spanish operator pulled out of a bid to operate the UK’s West Coast line. Renfe’s offer for the California line reinforces the Spanish presence for a project in which ACS has already secured the contract to build a 100km stretch of track for around 990m euros, while Ferrovial has landed the contract to lay out 35km for around 400m euros. Spain has had a high-speed railway system, known as the AVE, since 1992.

Terror-attack ‘link’ man held by police

SPANISH police have detained a man accused of being a link to last month’s terror attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils.

The 24-year-old, originally from Morocco, is a Spanish resident and, allegedly, had a close relationship to a number of those involved in the August attacks, which left 16 people dead

and over 130 injured. Police, who arrested the suspect in Vinaros in Valencia province, are looking into the man’s involvement in the buying of materials, in particular hydrogen peroxide, which was used to make over 100kg of explosives. The Islamist cell had been planning to carry out a larger bomb attack, according to police, but these plans were thwarted

when the house used as the gang’s lair exploded, killing two of its members. So far, six men suspected of being involved were killed by police during the attacks, while a further four have been arrested. Since Spain’s terror alert was raised to Level 4, the second-highest, in June 2015, Spanish police have arrested 201 people, alleged to be associated with militant Islamists.

Spanish growers are keen to overcome US investigation

Our black olives are fair enough

Fisherman’s death fall

A PENSIONER aged 67, originally from La Laguna but

now living in Candelaria, died this week when he fell while trying to fill a bucket with water from a rocky area there, on Playa Samarines. A few young men, fishing in the same area, dragged him from the water and called the emergency services. Local Police officers attempted to resuscitate the man, who then went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics could only confirm his death.

Four hurt in TF-1 crash

FOUR people were injured in a two-car crash on Tuesday afternoon on the TF-1, near Las Chafiras. Paramedics at the scene eased the plight of a 44-year-old woman, who was suffering a seizure. They also treated a man of 50 and two minors, aged 13 and 14, for whiplash and mild-anxiety attacks. All four were taken to hospital.

Holiday Brit dies diving

A BRITISH woman, aged 44, died last Saturday at around 10.45am after a diving accident in Gran Canaria. The 44-year-old was pronounced dead after diving off Mogan’s Veneguera Beach and getting into difficulty.

SPANISH producers of black olives have finalised documentation requested by the United States as part of an investigation into unfair competition. It was opened in July by the Donald Trump administration, and the sector had to send detailed information on all its companies, and the subsidies they received, by 28th September, which was yesterday (Thursday). “They are 150-page questionnaires, an enormously complex and laborious job,” complained Antonio de Mora, General Secretary of the Spanish Association of Exporters and Industrialists of Table Olives (Asemesa). Following complaints filed by two Californian companies, the US Department of Commerce opened an investigation on the grounds that Spanish producers may be benefiting from unfair aid, allowing them to sell below market price. The companies reject such accusations. Following the probe, the Department of Commerce warned in July that tariffs would be imposed if the firms were found to be in violation of the rules. The US will issue a

preliminary ruling on 20th November regarding the information sent on subsidies, and on 17th January on an “antidumping” questionnaire. The final conclusions are expected next July. De Mora says the documentation required by the States is an absolutelythorough check, an audit of subsidies, costs, prices and the organisations themselves. “Our main objective is to show that the US accusations are unfounded,” he adds. “The subsidies are endorsed by the World Trade Organisation. “The sector does not receive any specific aid for olives or olive oil. It receives the same as any other product, which means they are questioning the entire European system of subsidies.” A source for the Andalusian regional agriculture department says: “It should be made clear that the aid is not free, nor done as a favour. These are subsidies, awarded through tenders, which many other companies opt for, and must meet a series of criteria and conditions for the investment.” The documentation on the aid, says De Mora, is being completed in conjunction with the Spanish Govern-

ment and the European Union. “A lot of the information must be supplied by them”. Last year, Spanish producers exported 32 million kilos of olives to the US, with a value of 70m euros. They must also have sent a “complete in-depth analysis” of each company by the deadline. “In the anti-dumping questionnaire, each company must provide all the information regarding its costs, its productivity, its prices and its distribution,” recalls De Mora. He argues that the Spanish sector is a good competitor because “its companies are efficient, modern, world leaders, and do not exist as the result of any help. Their prices are a consequence of their high efficiency”. De Mora adds: “We are going to demonstrate that the difficulties facing Californian companies are not because of the imports.” Spanish producers exported 32m kilograms of this type of olive to the US last year, with a value of 70m euros, and accounting for 36% of the total sold abroad, according to Asemesa data. In Spain, there are about 20 companies which grow this variety, although just 10 firms are responsible for 98% of the supply.

Car sparks Rental rip-off firm garage fire is shut down at last A HOLIDAY rental company, said to be responsible for ripping-off at least 150 people, has been shut down. Four people have been arrested in Benidorm over fraud, being part of a criminal organisation, and identity-theft charges. But the firm is believed to have advertised fake apartments all over Spain. It is said to have used photos of apartments they found on the internet, publishing them on

FIRE-FIGHTERS were called out to Pueblo Canario, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, after a fire had broken out in a block of garages. The alarm was raised by the security staff, who noticed smoke pouring out from one garage at 3am and contacted the emergency services.

Once extinguished, it appeared to have been sparked by a car parked in the garage basement. Three motorbikes were also affected by the flames. National Police promptly began looking for a homeless man, believed to have started the blaze and seen fleeing the area by the security guards. He is a petty thief, known in the area by local authorities.

different platforms online and advertising them as their own. In some cases, they also used other people’s identities to register a phone number, to convince potential victims their product was real. They would then ask for half the rent up front, ranging from 200-900 euros, and often send

contracts using the names of deceased people to give a “legal feel” to their operations. According to police, many of the victims discovered they had been scammed, only when they had arrived at their destination. But, obviously, they were unable to contact the agency, or access their supposed property.

‘Van’ Gogh’s stroke too far

IMAGINE parking your vehicle overnight, and finding it covered in graffiti the next morning?

That’s what happened to a white van parked in Los Cristianos centre, as you can see from the photo,

posted by the owner, Daniel Cetrulo, who must surely be furious. But there’s a twist in the tale that will have most of us in tears, of laughter! That’s because the “artist” uploaded a picture of his work to his Facebook page… and National Police officer have already arrested him!

English… as she is spoken, in Madrid

Taxi-drivers Daniel Elizo (left) and Oscar López by a cab with the sticker, reading “This taxi speaks English”

ENGLISH is the language of both business and tourism, which is why many tourist destinations, including the Madrid region, have started to carry English translations on signs, maps and menus in museums and restaurants. In the same vein, 500 taxi drivers in the city have signed up to a free, online English course, run by the local authorities to improve the quality of the tourist experience in the region, and to make “tourists feel at home right away”. “More and more foreigners are coming to Madrid for

“tourists feel at home right away” business and leisure,” said Oscar López. “They account for practically half my rides. We give tourists their first impression of the city. If we help their trip to begin well, the rest of their visit will go better.” Having driven a taxi for 10 years, he has no doubt that English is necessary. He is on a basic course, but he practises what he learns with his customers. “When I have a long journey, I listen to Vaughan Radio,” added Oscar, referring to a station geared specifically to learning English. “That way, the customer understands what’s being said, and we have things to talk about.”

Raiders’ real deal AFTER genuine euro bank-notes worth

4,770 euros were returned to the Bank of Spain for exchange, it was realised that they had been stolen by armed raiders from an armoured van. The National Police, which investigated, confirmed that the inks matched those used to protect cash during robberies, having received confirmation from their laboratory. Officers arrested a trio of men, attempting to exchange the notes in Barcelona, Girona and Madrid.

He believes English should be incorporated into the taxi-driver exam, and that a glossary of useful phrases should be made available. The online course was designed by Universia, which took inspiration from last year’s volunteers’ English course at the Rio Olympics. Carlos Chaguaceda, Tourism Director for the Madrid region, believes that language is essential to making the visitor feel at home. And, set up with the support of three, major, taxi associations, he believes the initiative is just the first of many the regional government will invest in. Cristina Sicilia, a taxi-driver for 11 years, said: “Improving

skills has to be ongoing, so it can’t end with this course. If the local government comes up with another course, I’ll take it. Otherwise, I’ll look for an alternative.” Meanwhile, relative newcomer Daniel Elizo, 32, who has been driving a taxi for 18 months, speaks English and feels it reassures his customers. “When tourists get in and realise I speak English, their expression changes,” he said. “If you talk to them, speaking English gets easier, and the customers are friendlier. They correct you, and they’re usually keen to help you improve.” English, he believes, is like his GPS, meter and airconditioning: a requirement of the job, as those in the tourism sector are finding out.

Spanish IS recruiter collared in Belgium A SPANISH national of Moroccan origin has been arrested by Belgian police for indoctrinating and recruiting new members for the Islamic State.

Spain had already issued a European arrest warrant for the 26-year-old man, who was nabbed in the town of Zaventem on Wednesday. The Spanish Home Office, which announced his arrest, said: “He was the last member of a group that, based in Belgium, began a large radicalisation process in 2014, in which another five people were involved.” Three of the group’s members were arrested in Spain, and a fourth in Morocco. The younger brother of the man arrested was among those detained previously. Two of the members were arrested on 8th May in the Catalan towns of Badalona and Salou respectively. The Home Office said the latest detainee carried out his indoctrination and recruiting activities in Brussels, sharing material on social media and “being very active in mobile, instant-messaging groups”. The content shared included suicide operations, execution scenes and beheadings, as well as encouraging terrorist attacks in Europe. And he was said to have had “direct contact” with Islamic State fighters in Syria and Iraq. “The man arrested attempted to travel with his brother to those countries twice,” revealed the Home Office. The group was also understood to have targeted groups and buildings in Belgium.

Fires leave goats licking their lips

HUNGRY goats are helping to prevent forest fires in Spain, thanks to a Girona pilot programme in northern Spain, which has put the animals to work in the most risky areas.

The programme is run by the Pau Costa Foundation, known as “Goat Fire Brigades”, which says it has revived an ancient, agricultural method of wildfire prevention. The local breeds, wellsuited to the terrain, are sent to munch through overgrown scrub-land. This leaves the fires

with a shortage of fuel, and it restricts the area in which it can spread. It also provides fire-fighters with a clear route to blazes, enabling them to get closer and deal with them more efficiently. Farmers are also benefiting from the practice because it gives their products a unique selling point.

Flock kept on its toes - by a blind sheepdog

AN amazing, five-year-old sheepdog still tends to his flock in the field, despite being blind. In fact, Kit looks after 210 sheep and goats near the Basque Country town of Sodupe, relying on just his nose and ears. And the super-smart dog even beat his sighted rivals at a local sheep-herding competition, in which he came fifth. Sheepdogs often develop sight problems, but it is rare for blind ones to continue working. But Mark Smithers, of Regal Bliss

sheepdog breeders, in Purley, South London, said the animal would rely on its other senses becoming sharper, to compensate for the lack of sight. “Like humans, when you lose one sense, others are heightened,” he said. “Certainly, any dog’s sense of smell is massively more prone than ours. The dog would be able to smell and hear the sheep to determine where they are.

“But it is quite surprising because, obviously, it is particularly reliant on its sight.” Mr Smithers breeds Old English Sheepdogs, which, he said, were particularly prone to eye problems. “Before we would breed any of ours, and generally within the UK they would be eyescored (eye-tested) two or three times during their lifetimes,” he added.

Pound bounces back By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks. During the past fortnight, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has climbed sharply higher, rising from a low of around 1.0968 euros, to a high in the region of 1.1394. This means EUR/GBP has slumped from around £0.9121 to a ten-week low of around £0.8776. EUR/ USD has also weakened, trending in the region of US$1.2037 two weeks ago, but then falling to around US$1.1864 this week. There has, of course, been a lot going on recently to keep the currency markets occupied. It’s been a busy period for UK politics with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson causing a stir, after re-awakening the

controversial claim that Brexit will free up £350 million per week to spend on the NHS. Theresa May also delivered a speech on the UK’s approach to Brexit recently, but markets were disappointed with the lack of clarity it provided. Meanwhile, the US dollar has been weakened by political concerns, but strengthened by an improving outlook upon US interest rates. Military tensions between the US and North Korea continue to escalate. President Donald Trump shocked the United Nations in his first address to the organisation, by claiming the US may be forced to “totally destroy” North Korea, in defence of itself or its allies. North Korea responded by threatening to test a hydrogen bomb in the Pacific Ocean. On the other hand, the US Federal Reserve has stated that it will start to trim the balance sheet from next month, and also indicated that it might raise interest rates one more time during 2017. The euro has been undermined by the approach of the German Federal Elections, which saw Angela Merkel retain

her majority, but lose her coalition partners the Social Democrat Party (SPD), meaning that there could be weeks of negotiations as she tries to form a coalition with minor parties. As well as the usual slew of inflation, growth and retail data to which the pound, euro and US dollar will all respond strongly, there are plenty of speeches in the coming days from central bankers. Bank of England (BoE) Governor Mark Carney, European Central Bank (ECB) President Mario Draghi and Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen are all giving public addresses this week. Should they mention

the outlook for monetary policy, the pound, euro or US dollar respectively could react strongly. Markets will be particularly interested in the UK services PMI, which is set for release on Wednesday, October 4th. Alongside the concurrent composite index, this will be the last PMI release covering the month of September, meaning economists will have access to all the business surveys for the third quarter. This means analysts will be able to make reasonable estimates for the pace of UK economic growth during Q3. Signs of an uptick from Q2 will sharply boost the

pound, while indications that growth is weakening again could send GBP tumbling. Floor-clause claims By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

SINCE the creation of courts which specialise in floor clauses, they have received more than 57,000 lawsuits regarding this matter. This data is provided by the General Council of Judicial Power (CGPJ), and, to date, 52 such courts have been created, with La Laguna Court the competent one in Tenerife. But let me recap on what Floor Clause actually means, how you know whether your mortgage loan has a Floor Clause attached, and, if so, how you can claim back the over-payments.

This is a clause included within the mortgage loan with variable interest, in which the debtor is not allowed to enjoy any fall in interest rates. The clause is incorporated in the financial clauses of the loan in the Deed of Mortgage, mainly under the topic “limit to the application of variable interest” (límite a la aplicación del interés variable), “limit of variability” (límite de la variabilidad) or “variable interest type” (tipo de interés variable). How can I claim? You’ll know if the Floor

Clause is applied when, despite a decrease of the interest rate, your repayments remain the same. The monthly average of the Euribor in August 2017 stood at -0.156%. It fell 0.108 points from August 2016, when the monthly Euribor stood at -0.048%. It supposes a reduction in the monthly payment of about six euros. Consumers can already claim the repayments, collected irregularly by the banks in terms of floor clauses that are not transparent, through the

mechanism provided by the Royal Decree Law 1/2017 (I have referred to this Royal Decree in previous CW issues). This is: those affected by the floor clause may submit the claim into their bank branch. Once received, the bank must offer the client a calculation of the sum to be refunded, or the reasons why the claim is considered not appropriate. Once the bank’s offer is received, the consumer must state whether he agrees or not. If so, the bank will make the refund. The whole process will be done in a maximum term of three months. The customer may decide to go to court directly. However, if the person decides to go before the extrajudicial procedure stated in the Royal Decree Law, he or she must wait until the latter is finished in order to go to court. In the event that the client goes to court and obtains a judgement superior to what the bank proposes, the bank would pay the costs.

But if the client has not gone through the extra-judicial procedure, and the bank is cleared in the courts, he or she will have to pay costs. How can I be paid? The bank will return, in cash, the extra amounts paid by the client. However, it may return part in cash, and part as early repayment of the capital if you want. If you prefer cash back, the bank will have to pay you within a maximum threemonth period from the initial claim. If the parties agree on another formula, acceptance by the customer shall be hand-written, after being duly informed of the value of the alternative measure. For this, you have 15 days to respond, but do remember to ask an experienced lawyer for legal advice. -Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer registered at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Reformation: Europe’s Holy War Tuesday 3 October, BBC2, 21.00

Celebrity Showmance

Wednesday 4th October, ITV2, 21.00

In this one-hour documentary for BBC Two, historian David Starkey reveals how the Protestant Reformation unleashed fundamentalist beliefs, terror and holy war across Europe in a way that is all too familiar to us today. “There was the same literalism,” he says, “the same passionate intensity, the same apocalyptic violence as now.” Timed to coincide with the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther nailing his 95 Theses to the doors of All Saint’s Church in Wittenberg, this programme will chart the spread of Luther’s ideas across Europe and into Britain. David Starkey will explain how and why Luther’s simple act of defiance would gain such momentum, and will explore the consequences of his actions - both on the Christian faith, and on society at large. Filmed in Rome, Germany and the UK, the programme will concentrate on the early years of the Reformation, looking in particular at the impact and legacy of the Reformation on England. It prompted Henry VIII to split with the Catholic Church in Rome and declare himself Supreme Head of the Church of England. Martin Luther’s attack on Rome would transform the western world and Henry VIII’s actions would set Britain apart from both Roman Catholic and Lutheran countries. Starkey argues that Henry’s break with Rome was a ‘Tudor Brexit’ that laid the foundations of our conflicted attitudes to Europe today.

Entertaining, informative and charming Teach My Pet To Do That celebrates the hidden intellectual potential of our nations pets. We are a nation of animal lovers with over half of us owning some sort of pet. Watching funny and entertaining pet’s on line is a bit of a national obsession but rarely do we think our own pets are capable of such feats of brilliance. Teach My Pet To Do That will wipe away that misconception. Using only positive reinforcement training this series proves that any pet has the potential to be an internet superstar. The Teach My Pet, Pet School is a place where domesticated pets of all shapes, sizes and species enroll to be taught tricks that enrich the lives of animal and owner. This week on Teach My Pet To Do That, animal lover, comedian and presenter Alexander Armstrong opens the doors of his multispecies pet training school, to welcome Ethel the Goat and Fagin the Crow in the hope they can learn to tidy up their toys and put them away in a box.

Monty Halls tells incredible stories of Second World War escapes from Nazi-occupied territory by prisoners of war and Allied soldiers. Retracing their routes, former marine Monty discovers what it took to survive on the run, and celebrates the extraordinary bravery of the escapees and the locals who risked their lives to help them. In this episode Monty recounts one of the most successful missions ever carried out by the SAS, and their daring escape from behind enemy lines in northern Italy. A small SAS group were dropped by parachute deep in Nazi-occupied territory to create chaos in the fascist ranks with unpredictable lightning attacks. Monty meets local Italian survivors who courageously helped to protect the SAS troops, and tells the extraordinary story of how just 33 SAS soldiers outwitted several thousand enemy troops.

Landing in the deep heat of Aden, Royal Military Police Captain Joe Martin (Jeremy Neumark Jones) and his wife Honor (Jessie Buckley) are new to both army and married life. Joe will replace the outgoing and much loved Captain Page, whose farewell party the men are currently planning. Page makes his own emotional goodbyes - to his lover Alison Laithwaite (Jessica Raine), the troubled wife of Lieutenant Ed Laithwaite (Stephen Campbell Moore). Ed, meanwhile, airs his frustrations to Major Harry Markham (Ben Miles) about the treatment of an Adeni prisoner. When Markham insists he is simply following orders, Ed slips off to meet an NLF informant, who warns of an imminent NLF attack, directed at the RMP and spearheaded by new leader AbdulKadir Hakim. Settling in, Honor is immediately drawn to the enigmatic Alison, despite Joe’s concerns about their husbands’ differing ranks. She is also welcomed by Mary Markham (Amanda Drew), mother to six year-old George. But danger is never far away in Aden...

Trump versus Kim - it is the most chilling nuclear standoff for decades. No longer is the world asking whether North Korea can be stopped from developing nuclear weapons, but instead whether it can be stopped from using them. As the two leaders trade threats, reporter Jane Corbin investigates how North Korea has dodged sanctions and thwarted international efforts to stop it becoming a nuclear power. She also asks how can the two leaders move back from the brink, and how likely it is this could all end in nuclear war?

Simon Reeve’s spectacular journey through Russia with a host of extraordinary characters continues. In this second leg, Simon begins in south-east Siberia and it takes him to Russia’s far south west and the majestic Caucasus Mountains. Simon’s first stop is Lake Baikal, the oldest and deepest lake on earth, and the nearby city of Irkutsk where he witnesses the emotional outpouring of Russia’s annual commemoration of World War Two. Rejoining the Trans-Siberian railway he heads to the city of Krasnoyarsk, where a café pays homage to Russia’s president Vladimir Putin and proud and patriotic staff and punters perform a daily rendition of the national anthem. Continuing his journey, Simon sees evidence of the political and social upheaval that Russia has faced since the collapse of communism. In their search for a new ideology, millions of Russians have joined sects and new religions. Simon visits the Siberian community that worships a man named Vissarion, believing him to be the reincarnation of Christ.

Coppering up! hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot

WITH Autumn and Winter just around the corner, heads turn to what’s up and coming, colourwise, in the salon this season. After a few years of deep reds and plummy colours, the

shade which is hot on their heels is auburn. To those of you who feel a little scared of this colour, it’s not orange! It’s anything with a warm touch, such as bronzy browns and coppery, dark blondes. There’s no need to completely change your colour to achieve this effect; warmth can be added in many ways. To create a warmer glow, add in a copper-mix tone to your regular brown, and deep-bronze lowlites look amazing on a chocolate brown. If you’re a lighter shade, you can opt for

a light, copper blonde for the cooler seasons. This will add colour to your complexion, if the summer months have stripped your hair a little.

Oriental express By Carl pattison

NOT one for florals, like me? Too girly and a bit fussy for your tastes? Then try out a hot look from this season.

It’s all gone a little Eastern influence, with the new florals taking on an oriental touch. Look out for heavily-embroidered silks and chiffons, with unusual floral detail. Go for bottle greens, navy blues and redwine-inspired colours; the background must be dark to enhance the explosion of floral colour. Golds really pick out this look perfectly, as do silvers and any colours that look lavish. Stay away from anything floral and

NOT all of us are lucky enough to have gardens and large outside spaces here in Tenerife, but most of us do have something, even if it’s just a small balcony.

printed, which make it look as though you tore down a curtain and made an outfit, and think opulent.

Tie in your oriental look with matching accessories of overlysized bags and elaborate jewellery.

Whatever exterior space we do have, it’s an important area of the home; a little sanctuary, if you like, where a lot of time is spent socialising, catching some sun and eating, or where you go, just to sit down and relax. Recently, I have been looking online, and found some fabulous images of balconies. There were some re-

ally great decorating ideas to make a cosier area, all inexpensive little touches that can completely transform. So I am hoping to inspire you all to make a few changes. Don’t let your outside space be a dumping ground for the kids’ toys or hubby’s tools; it’s worth clearing the clutter and turning it into a little haven where you can go to disconnect. I don’t think the style of your home really matters, whether it’s rustic or minimalist inside. The outside will go with whatever you have, and it gives you a chance to be a bit quirky. Start with the seating area, and decide what you can fit in. Make it the centre piece, and decorate your way around it, making it comfortable with seat cushions. These will add extra texture and colour. Plants, of course, are going to play a big part, so

surround yourself with them. Place tall ones round the sides, using space-saving pots. Don’t use those which are too bulky, so as little floor space as possible is taken. Try to get as much greenery as you can, but nothing too high-maintenance. You can even go up the walls with vertical wall planters. Altering the flooring separates the space really well. You don’t have to go all-out and change the tiles; there are many varieties of wooden decking which you can place over the top. Use artificial grass, or just a lightweight rug, to give it an original look. Pretty lighting makes all the difference at night, and dim ceiling lights and solar-powered lights will give you a cool, chill-out vibe. Bring it all together with finishing, decorative pieces like metal wall art, candles and lanterns - and it’s done! You’ll want to stay out there forever!

THE 2017 TEAs has adopted a Carnival theme, and, for this year only, a Carnival Queen category has been introduced.

Emma-marie hemsley

Rachel Louise hooker

Teresa keene

The four nominees, Leah Stacey Burt, Rachel Louise Hooker, Teresa Keene and Emma-Marie Hemsley, were treated to a makeover and photo-shoot at Cinderella’s Boutique in La Caleta last Thursday (21st September). And who better to give professional advice on what to wear than owner Anna Marie, who helped the girls choose the most suitable

dresses to show off their attributes! A fun time was had by all, with the girls helping each other with zips and hairstyles, swapping dresses and giggling from the effects of the Cava. Denise, from Etiquette Modelling Agency (EMA), there to impart her expert knowledge, guided the girls into glamorous positions, ready to have

their photos taken. Mark, from Mark Thornton Photography, snapped away, and the resulting photos can be seen on the TEAs’ Facebook page, or their website, ready for voting. The successful young lady will be the “2018 Face of Sebastian & St. James”, International Financial Advisers Limited, sponsors of this year’s TEAs.

The purrrfect pet We love to hear cats purring, but have you ever wondered why they do? It is the most-common sound cats make. Humans smile, dogs wag their tails, and cats purr; we all show contentment in different ways. When cats are curled up in the sun, you may hear a gentle rumble of them purring, but they also do this to communicate other emotions and needs, too. It isn't always a sign of happiness. Sometimes, it's an emotional response, because of pain or distress. Cats may also purr while giving birth, which is more likely to help them rest and repair. Cats have a special type of purr that they use when they want attention, especially

when they're hungry. This is known as a “solicitation purr”, and involves a purr and meow together. If you're a cat owner, you probably respond to this sound in the same way that parents respond to the cry of their baby. A cat purr begins in its brain. A repetitive, neural oscillator sends messages to the laryngeal muscles, causing them to twitch at a rate of 25-150 vibrations per second. This results in the vocal cords separating when the cat inhales and exhales, producing a purr. Adoptions Are you thinking of having a cat/kitten? Please consider adopting from Cats Welfare Tenerife. All our cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.catswelfare-tenerife.com/pets. Give Anabelle the help she deserves AN afternoon of fun and music, and an excellent raffle, takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at Palms Sports Bar, Adeje, near Aqualand, in aid of a really special young girl. Anabelle, who is just eight, has a cancerous tumour (medulloblastoma), which, say specialists, can only be treated successfully in the US. But that takes money, big money, and her divorced mother, Maria Zobnina, simply does not have the means to raise the necessary 100,000 euros on her own. But charitable donations, now approaching the 20,000euro mark, can be made to www.GoFundMe,annabelles-

medical-cancer-fund Kevin Carlin comperes the event, and, among the list of singers giving their services free tomorrow are, Jacqui Peters, Lisa Cowley, Stevie Sainte, Justin Quinn and Ray Wilde. The afternoon starts at 1.30, when the raffle takes place, and the entertainers will perform from 2pm onwards. Raffle tickets are two euros each, or five for five euros, and there are some excellent prizes to be won. These include two tickets for the U2 tribute concert at the Magma Centre on 4th November; A one-hour teethwhitening session; Haircut and blow-dry; Pedicure; A one-hour massage: Two

tickets for Utopia boat party; A buggy safari, plus wine, chocolate and many more prizes, which are still arriving from generous donors. There is also a bouncy castle, a cake sale, and other sideshows. Bakers are still needed, as are raffle prizes, so please contact Anabelle’s mother, Maria, on 660 551 462, or Darcy, on 619 846 696. Maria said: “We have exhausted all the medulloblastoma treatments here. “But there is a surgeon in Washington DC who is willing to take her on, and it is absolutely vital that I get her there as soon as possible. Children’s opening to tread the boards

HELPING Hands, the successful children’s charity here in the south, is turning its hands, and feet, to the dance world. It is offering funding to five youngsters, to enable them to join the renowned Ritmania Fame Academy, in Los Cristianos. Liz Montague, who runs Helping Hands, has linked up with the dance school to promote a scholarship for five bright hopefuls, between the ages of five and 15, with “a desire to dance”. The Academy believes all children should have the opportunity to dance,

so they can realise their potential and build selfesteem and confidence. They can also learn to be part of a team, and simply be the best they can be! Liz added: “We understand that many people are not fortunate enough to be able to pay for their child to attend the academy. For this reason, through charity support, we can help give a child this opportunity to be part of this scheme, and be part of the Ritmania Academy. If you know a boy or girl in this age group who may be eligible for “A Chance to Dance” funding, please contact Emma or Carla on 610 011 021 for more information.

The Tenerife Superleague gets underway

HELLO everybody, and welcome to Tenerife pool superleague 2017/18 season. A special welcome to the teams that have just joined this season; Union Bar and BBJs United. Best of luck to both teams. I hope you enjoy this fantastic league, and are with us for many seasons to come. On a personal note, I’d like to thank Debbie and Ray from Camp Nauta for inviting my team (Marius & Lo) to now play from there, so we are now called Nauta Nomads! This coming season there is one main change to the format for match night. We will now be playing 12 singles games, instead of eight singles and

two doubles. This is something which has been talked about for the previous two seasons, but was eventually agreed upon at the last AGM. The teams to look out for this season are all the LEGENDS teams. That is A,B, Elite and Boothen. I’m not a betting man, but if

any bookie is brave enough to take a fiver that these four teams will not be in the top five at the end of the season, I’d love to see the odds. Last, but by no means least, on behalf of Tenerife pool super league, I would like to say a great big THANK YOU to Chris

Elkington, and the whole team at the Canarian Weekly, for giving us this chance to keep you wonderful people of Tenerife, and beyond, up-todate with everything that’s happening in our Tenerife pool superleague 2017/18 season. Happy pool nights, people.

Basketball

Bouncing all over FIRST it was Europe, and now South America has also bowed after the La Laguna-based team, on their own court, won the Intercontinental Cup 76-71 against Guaros de Lara of Venezuela on Sunday. It’s a brilliant way for new coach Nenad Markovic to begin his career on the Yellows’ bench. Tenerife qualified by lifting the inaugural European Champions League at the end of last season against Turkish side Banvit, after

whose 21 points earned him the Man of the Match accolade. The quarter scores went 1417, 22-22, 20-16, and 20-16, the key to the home victory being strength in depth. Second-top-scorer Davin White (8pts) was followed

hosting the Final Four competition. This was a tight final for the La-Laguna-based team, and the visitors were counting on their former New York Knicks star, Nat Robinson, to drive them to victory. But his 10-point haul was eclipsed by Tenerife’s NewYork-born Mike Tobey,

by a string of players with six-point hauls. The near-5,000 crowd will now look forward to the new league season, which starts this weekend with a visit to San Pablo Burgos, in the north-western area of Castile and León.

Goal Feast is Blue heaven CD Tenerife 4 Alcorcon 0

By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review

S T R I C T L Y speaking, it wasn’t the most artistic dancing by CD Tenerife fans, but the stands rocked with an increasinglyproud rhythm as four unanswered goals waltzed into the visitors’ net on Saturday night. Alcorcon, arriving as the division’s in-form team, were taken apart, and returned home in tatters after a masterful display from the finest on offer at Santa Cruz. Competition for Tenerife

Women’s football

Ladies seek calmer waters Zaragoza 1 Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 1 WINNING football is the objective for Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife this Sunday, after the club’s week of controversy and tension.

Albacete are the visitors to San Isidro on Sunday, kick-off at noon. And, with three games gone, Tenerife are still seeking their first victory of the season. Coach Toni Ayala has weathered the storm, following his rant at officials after last week’s 1-1 draw at Zaragoza. A Nora own-goal gave Tenerife an 11th-minute lead. But it was equalled by a Maya strike for the home side after 64 minutes, to leave Granadilla in 11th position in Spain’s Premier League. Afterwards, Ayala launched a verbal blast at the officials, and at the Premier League’s refereeing standards. It was quite a scathing assessment, including a comment that the officials had “no flipping (the polite version) idea” what they were doing. The Tenerife club announced disciplinary proceedings against their coach, who has made outspoken comments

about match officials before. It remains to be seen if any action will be taken by the club and the league. For now, though, there is a tense, Tenerife ceasefire as the focus returns to the playing field, and the need to kick-start the season. A good win, together with a lack of controversy, would be a welcome end to a turbulent week.

places is a big motivation for players, and coach Pep Marti has loads of options this season. Bryan Acosta was the latest to grab the limelight. The Honduras midfielder was at the heart of the best creative moves, and his energy and neat skills inspired his team-mates. Italian striker Longo had Alcorcon on the back foot from the start, and Borja had to be sharp to clear his early attempt. One of the key ingredients of the home team’s performance was the way their play flowed. Dani made a smart, high-take in goal, and punted the ball out to Juan Carlos on the right. In an instant, the play had switched ends and it took some frantic defending to close him out. Just 12 minutes in, and home pressure paid off. Alcorcon gave up a freekick and a Juan Carlos shot was driven straight and true, giving the keeper nothing to grasp at but fresh air. But Tenerife expected it to be a tough game, and the visitors had their moments. It was a day when forwards would get the glory, but Tenerife defenders were on top form when needed, Carlos Ruiz in particular. Longo was giving Navarro a tough time and Malbasic was always willing to add extra fire-power. Juan Carlos could have scored his second goal after Longo set him up, but the ball trickled wide of the post.

Malbasic and Acosta linked well to feed Longo, and, as the keeper came out, Longo slipped the ball past him and into the net. Longo returned the favour by setting up Malbasic just before half-time. He headed over, but there was an expectation of more goals to come. A double substitution after the restart gave Alcorcon some brief encouragement, but Pereira put an easy

chance over the bar before Tenerife pinned them back again. Victor Casadesus joined the party in place of Longo and was soon revelling in the space created by his team-mates. Juan Carlos, displaying his skills on the wing, turned two defenders and supplied a sweet pass to Casadesus, who finished clinically for a 3-0 lead. Alcorcon had no answer to Tenerife’s smooth interplay, and even when they did see a chink of light, it was soon snuffed out, Camille made a great intervention to stop Bellvis when he had thoughts of getting near the goal. Juan Carlos departed to a thunderous ovation as Inaki arrived with 10 minutes left. After excelling at left-back in the midweek Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) win, he took up a midfield slot … the sort of versatility which makes a coach happy. Into injury-time and there was one last treat for the 12,039 crowd. Casadesus slipped the ball to Malbasic whose shot was only partially saved by the keeper. But the Serbian made no mistake with his return strike. The stunning victory puts Tenerife back up to fourth place, with an away game at Lugo tomorrow (Saturday) at 5pm.

Tavern take treble chance IT was a close call at Phoenix Bar when they entertained in-form Tavern A team. And, in a match that swung one way then the other, Tavern stepped up to the oche to take the trebles and a share of the points in a creditable draw. Steve, with two maximums, and Ray with one for Boothen, followed by three perfect darts from Richard and Wattie, then some ton-plus scores and both doubles going to five legs … this must make the encounter one of the finest matches of the season, Pas O Nadas A coming out on the wrong side of a 6-2 result. Emerald Lounge took a short trip to Loch Inn, and, in yet another close match, the home team took the doubles and trebles to register a 5-3 win after a great night of darts. Scruffy Macs welcomed Palms Pool Bar, and, in a one-sided match, they relaxed in the final game to give the visitors their only point. But Scruffy’s are five points clear at the top. Congratulations to Dale on his 180 for the Palms.

Ourplace Playboys were unstoppable as they whitewashed Sundowners, who had no answer to the home team’s accuracy. Another 8-0 scoreline was recorded by Spear Chuckers, who beat a four-man Picasso’s team. But full credit to the superb darts thrown by the home boys, including a 135 finish for Rob and a 180 max for Graham. Clouseaus and Naughty Nautas fought out a 4-4 draw as the home team held their own to take the 701 game. In Division 2, the top two came together at Sandys, who pinched the trebles in a 4-4 result to maintain a fivepoint lead over Legends, who have a game in hand and will have accepted this result. Ourplace Breakaways had a 5-3 win over an unlucky Lady Macs big thanks to Jimmy for marking! Marilyns A continued their good form as they put seven past Nutty Nautas, but Nauta Nomads homed in on Marilyns B team to inflict a 6-2 defeat on them. It is just a 4.4 km course, up the TF 51 to La Escalona, but the tight bends and sudden turns will test drivers and machines to the limit. It’s all part of the ongoing Spanish and Tenerife championships, involving drivers from Spain, Portugal, and Italy, all bidding to set the quickest-possible combined time for the course with

Water Polo

Arona’s hot wheels set for power show their high-octane charges Next Friday (6th Oct) is the day to get a close-up preview of the cars as they park up in the Plaza Cristo del Salud for inspection and technical checks, from 3.30-7.30pm. The ornate church, and Arona Council headquarters, will be the backdrop as lastminute adjustments are made and drivers discuss tactics with their co-drivers. Simone Fagiolli, the European mountain-racing champion, will be competing, along with fellow-Italians Macario Paride and Fulvio Guiliani. Czech driver Fabien Bouduban, and Portugal’s Joaquin Belmeiro in his Ford Fiesta R5, plus Manuel Correira (Renault Megane

Trophy), and Jose Correira (Nissan GTR3) will add to the international flavour. The full line-up will not be confirmed until the Friday inspection, but last year there was a 40-strong field of competitors. The two uphill runs, taking place on Saturday between 12.30-2pm, will each take around 75 minutes for all the drivers to blast their way up the course. The presentation of trophies will take place in a grand finale at Plaza Cristo del Salud, from 4.30pm. The racing stretch of the TF51 will be closed to general traffic from 7am on the Saturday until around 5 pm, but detours will be in place.

King’s Cup for Santa Cruz? WET, wild and full of fast-paced skills… that’s modern water polo. And, staged in a modern, open-air pool, it looks even better. The sport is enjoying a revival in Tenerife, and, with the Echeyde men’s team from Santa Cruz recently promoted to Spain’s highest league, it’s the perfect moment for the capital city to bid for Spain’s Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) finals. It takes place next year between 2nd-4th February, and the eight-team contest would include Echeyde. It will also showcase the best sides from one of Europe’s toughest leagues.

Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez is arranging talks with the sport’s Spanish Federation to tempt them to our shores. The Acidalio Lorenzo outdoor pool, on the southern approach into Santa Cruz, has recently had a 1.3m-euro facelift, with ample, tiered seating for hundreds of fans. Securing the tournament would be another feather in the cap for Santa Cruz Council, and TV coverage could be worth a fortune in tourist advertising. And it will give the spectators a chance to see top-level sport of a less-publicised kind, and, maybe, even deliver a home triumph to cheer!

Harsh lesson in finishing CD Marino 0 UD San Fernando 2

FOR the second successive home game, a lack of fire-power saw Marino finish with a disappointing defeat, although losing top striker Nami to injury after 15 minutes was a huge blow.

By then, however, Marino had already failed with a penalty, and gone a goal behind. Reverting to kick-andrush tactics was never going to rescue them, and there was a lack of clinical finishers in front of goal. And they had goalkeeper David Kikvidze to thank for saving them from a heavier defeat. The game was barely five minutes old when San Fernando’s Eslava fouled Juanma in the box, and the ref pointed to the spot. Kevin Castro struck the ball cleanly, but keeper Hidalgo kept it out with his legs as he dived. A long free-kick offered Marino another chance a few minutes later, but Juanma could only fire the ball over the bar. The Gran Canaria visitors took encouragement from these setbacks, and, pressing forward, forced a corner, with Aday adding the touch needed to put the ball in the net for the lead. A San Fernando freekick looked goal-

bound, but Kikvidze came to the rescue and turned the ball past the post. Then Nami limped off, and the task became that much harder. Zeben was the replacement, and his promising run down the left was crudely ended by a trip from the yellowshirted visitors. But a wild shot from Fran Delgado failed to test their keeper. Abraham, who posed a constant threat down the left, cut inside and unleashed a fierce shot, which was deflected wide by a Marino body. His next attempt, even better, was headed towards the top corner of the Marino goal. But it was kept out, thanks to Kikvidze’s classy tip-over. There was a danger of the action being one-way traffic as San Fernando tightened their grip. But keeper Kikvidze was equal to their best efforts, including a strong, one-handed, punched clearance in his repertoire. Zeben, doing his best to lead a home charge, gave his marker the slip but missed the target, and that was followed by a let-off for Marino. Kikvidze made a rare mistake as he came out to intercept the ball. He missed it, and the ball fell to Abraham, but a welltimed, blocking tackle from Carlos Saavedra saved the day. Delgado, pushing forward down the left,

went teasingly close with a shot that rebounded off the post and was scrambled away by the keeper. Aday, still chasing a second strike at the start of the second half, was denied by Kikvidze’s high catch, while Carlos stood firm to charge down a further shot. Time was against Marino, and they lost some of their drive as they drifted back to bad ways with too many speculative lobs forward, which left the forwards struggling to make contact. San Fernando took advantage of home mistakes to press for another goal, and Castro had to make a good clearance to avert danger as Rodrigo, a new Brazilian forward, replaced Diego to try to freshen up Marino. Abraham tested Kikvidze just before the game entered the final 15 minutes, but Aday turned provider with a pass to awaysub Cesar, whose clever chip over the keeper produced the second goal. That was it, but Marino weren’t giving up. Rodrigo tried his luck with a long-range shot, and Kikvidze pushed up from his goalmouth when Fran took a free-kick that just cleared the visitors’ bar. A few long balls upfield again exposed Marino’s frailty in the final third of the pitch, allowing San Fernando to see the game out comfortably.
