This will be the biggest peacetime repatriation

Continued from Front

Currently, there are still around 130,000 UK Thomas Cook customers stranded abroad, and officials are aware that a company ceasing trading, with such longstanding history, will be distressing for its customers, employees, hoteliers and other suppliers. And, said Thomas Cook Chief Executive Peter Fankhauser: “It is a matter of profound regret that the holiday company has gone under, and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this news.” The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has launched a repatriation programme over the next two weeks, from Monday 23rd September to Sunday 6th October, to bring Thomas Cook customers back to the UK. It will be the biggestever peacetime repatriation, and the CAA has secured a fleet of aircraft from around the world to fly passengers back to the UK. It is also contacting hotels accommodating Thomas Cook customers as part of a holiday package, to let them know that the cost of the accommodation for these customers will be covered by the Air Traffic Organiser’s Licence (ATOL) scheme. A special website, thomascook.caa.co.uk, has been launched by the CAA, where affected customers can find details and information on repatriation flights. Because of the significant scale of the situation, some disruption is inevitable, but the CAA will endeavour to

get people home as close as possible to their planned dates. Customers overseas should not travel to the airport until their flight back to the UK has been confirmed on the dedicated website. Passengers currently overseas may also make claims for the cost of replacing ATOLprotected parts of their trip, or for out-of-pocket expenses as a result of delayed flights home. The CAA will be launching a service to manage all refunds by Monday, 30th September, once the flying operation has progressed. Richard Moriarty, Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, said: “News of Thomas Cook’s collapse is deeply saddening for the company’s employees, customers, hoteliers and other suppliers, and we appreciate that many people still abroad will be anxious about how they will return to the UK. “The Government has asked us to support Thomas Cook customers, and we have launched a programme to bring them home, which also includes

costs to hotels accommodating Thomas Cook customers under the Air Travel Trust’s ATOL scheme.” Anyone affected by this news can check the CAA’s dedicated website, thomascook. caa.co.uk, for advice and information. Meanwhile, there is plenty of unrest among Tenerife’s British holidaymakers still here. Some have complained of being held “hostage” in their hotels after staff threatened them with eviction, unless they paid extra. Stephen McGonnell and Stacey Robinson from Bolton, whose nine-month-old daughter Olivia has a chest infection, were among dozens of tourists in this

British Ambassador’s reassurance

HUGH ELLIOTT, British Ambassador to Spain, has reassured people who flew with Thomas Cook that the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has sent a letter to every hotel with an ATOL-protected traveller in it, guaranteeing the hotel’s payment, from the date of arrival to the scheduled departure date. “But if the hotel requests payment from you, call the UK’s CAA on +44 1753 330 330,” he said. “It is also important not to make a payment to your hotel, unless instructed to do so by the CAA team. If you are ATOL-protected, you will have an ATOL certificate, by email or in the post. That can be confirmed here: https://thomascook.caa.co.uk/customers/ check-if-you-are-atol-protected/. “Travellers not ATOL-protected, cannot make a claim for expenses, but they may be able to claim from their travel insurer, bank or credit-card issuer.”

Miss Robinson said: “I said we’ve paid for this trip already and we have a sick baby… Now we’re frightened to leave the room empty in case they remove all our stuff.” Single mother Jodie McDade, who paid £900 with her daughter Kara at the same hotel, was told she would have to pay an extra 451 euros (£398) or face being removed. Thomas Cook cabincrew member Elizabeth

Telford, from Newcastle, staying at the hotel with her husband, suffered “a devastating doublewhammy”, losing her job as the firm collapsed, and being threatened with eviction from the hotel unless the couple paid an extra 661 euros (£584). A bewildered Elizabeth said: “I have worked for Thomas Cook for 10 years and I loved it. But I got an email in the morning saying they were really sorry, but the company had gone under, and here is your P45.”

THERE is hope for hoteliers in the Canary Islands, thanks to Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia, which is owned by Spies (Denmark). It resumed normal service on Tuesday, offering flights from the main airports of Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Fuerteventura. José Barreiro, owner of the Coral Hotels chain, revealed that he received a call from the airline on Monday night, confirming that they would resume their normal service the next day, after reaching an agreement with the UK liquidators. Like all Thomas Cook planes, the Scandinavian airline had remained on the ground after

being confiscated, which led to the cancellation of “all air traffic” from the Thomas Cook Nordic airline. However, the division’s chief press officer, Charlotte Hallencreutz, had stressed that Thomas Cook Northern Europe had not gone bankrupt, and that the operations and flights, scheduled for the future, would continue as planned. Barreiro stressed that it was excellent news from one of the most important markets for the Canaries, just a couple of weeks before the winter season begins, with high occupancy and visitors to the archipelago. He insists that the market will recover, but he adds

that it is necessary for the Canary Islands Government to concentrate on guaranteeing air capacity. And above all, he says, it must carry out promotions for the Canaries brand, not just for the flights, but also for customers who want to come to the islands. Thomas Cook Northern Europe embraces tour operators Ving, Globetrotter, Spies and Tjäreborg, as well as Thomas Cook Airlines Scandinavia, and several hotels, including the Sunwing Family Resorts, Ocean Beach Club and Sunprime Hotels brands. The Nordic division of the tourism giant sends an annual average of 1.6 million visitors to the three Canary Islands.

27th September - 3rd October 2019

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister called for an investigation as he questioned whether bosses should pay themselves “large sums of money” as their businesses “go down the tubes”. Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell said: “They have a moral responsibility to return their bonuses. They created this mess and there are large numbers of people losing their jobs. They should hand the money back to compensate those workers.” Boris Johnson told reporters in New York: “I think the questions we’ve got to ask ourselves now are: ‘How can this thing be stopped from happening in the future?’ “How can we make sure that tour operators take proper precautions with their business models, where you don’t end up with a situation where the taxpayer, the state, is having to step in and bring people home?” “I have questions about whether it’s right that the directors, or whoever, the board, should pay themselves large sums, when businesses can go down the tubes like that.”

When asked about sanctions on directors and tougher rules, the PM said: “I think you need to have some system by which tour operators insure themselves properly against this kind of eventuality.” The directors’ conduct will come under the microscope, as the Insolvency Services fast-tracks its probe into the circumstances surrounding the company going into liquidation. And liquidators will now see if any money can be found, within the 25-plus Thomas Cook companies, to hand back to staff and creditors. The travel agent had about 550 high street locations across the UK, but it leased its planes, rented its shops and acted as a broker with third-party hotels and cruise ships, all of which meant that it had minimal assets. Thomas Cook’s rivals are being criticised for taking advantage of the thousands of people who have had flights cancelled, by hiking their prices. Ryanair, Jet2 and Tui were accused of doubling and trebling the cost of some flights, immediately after Thomas Cook announced it had gone under.

Boris: Why he said ‘No’ to firm’s £150m bail-out

At least 150,000 British holidaymakers, who face being stranded abroad by the collapse of Thomas Cook, will be bought home, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has pledged. He was on a plane to New York for the UN General Assembly, moments before the news was confirmed that the 178-yearold travel company was going into administration. But Mr Johnson said the company’s request for a £150m bail-out from the taxpayer was rejected because of the “moral hazard” it would create for other businesses to fail. And he questioned whether action needed to be taken to stop the directors of travel companies escaping responsibility for rescuing their customers. Stranded passengers will have their hotel and new flight bills paid by the UK Government’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), funded through payments made by all airlines to a shared

emergency fund, as part of their licences to operate. With Thomas Cook on the brink over last weekend, some Labour politicians and trade unions had also called for comprehensive government aid to save the famous firm, along with its thousands of staff. They pointing to the multibillion-pound bail-out of the banks a decade ago. “It is a very difficult situation,” said Mr Johnson. “Obviously, our thoughts are very much with the customers of Thomas Cook, the holiday-makers who now face difficulties getting home.”

Rights of travellers and also consumers

THOMAS Cook has finally declared bankruptcy, and many consumers and travellers are affected. These include many travellers still in the Canary Islands, as well as consumers, who have already paid for their trip but will not be able to travel. In either case, they should know that their rights are recognised and guaranteed, according to the European and Spanish consumer protection rules. Spanish Royal Legislative Decree 1/2007 includes consumer protection rules on package travel and linked travel arrangements, and it establishes guarantees in favour of the consumers, in case of insolvency of the companies that sell package travel to Spain, or linked to Spain. It is important to know that any contract a consumer signed with Thomas Cook had to include the name and details of the insurance or financial company, which guaranteed the rights of the travellers in case of insolvency of the travel agent, such as: *Repatriation of travellers (if transportation is a part of the package travel contract) *Payment of accommodation until repatriation occurs *Payment of expenses related to the travel: breakfasts, lunches, dinners, etc. until repatriation occurs *Refund of the travel cost if the services cannot be supplied

For all the above, travellers’ rights are guaranteed and consumers who cannot travel because of Thomas Cook’s bankruptcy have the right to receive a refund and claim against the insurance/ financial company that guaranteed these rights. It can also prevent digestive problems, because munching on meat, made from acorn-fed pigs, reduces the symptoms of intestinal conditions such as ulcerative colitis. Scientists have discovered, in a study, that a particular variety of ham, made by the Joselito family for six generations, has “superfood” powers. Dr. Felipe Lombo, who led the study, said: “This is the only one that does not contain heavy metals, dyes, or preservatives. It is 100% natural, and of the highest quality.” Jose Gomez Sanchez, a member of the Joselito family, said: “We have 151 years of history, and we develop a product of the highest quality… completely natural!” Around 180,000 people in Spain suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, according to 2016 figures.

Scooter-riders’ Council protest

SOME 20 electricscooter riders gathered on the steps of Malaga Town Hall last Sunday, calling on the Council to give them the same rights as cyclists. The protest, organised by the Association of Vehicle Users for Personal and Ecological Mobility (Ampem), comes as city councillors prepare to ban electric scooters from pedestrian areas next month. Angel Terron, Ampem co-President, said: “The easiest thing to do is to assimilate them with the rules that bicycles already follow.” He added: “We must reclaim public space for sustainable vehicles from cars, and more so if Malaga claims to be a clean and modern city.” Despite the scooters’ bad reputation, partly through their involvement in a number of accidents, Ampem says they have numerous benefits, including emitting less emissions than cars and making less noise.

Flooded garage drowns ‘foreigner’

A 30-YEAR-OLD man, described as “foreign”, drowned after becoming trapped in a garage on the Costa Brava, which filled with water during a day of heavy rainfall last Saturday. Police, firefighters and divers rushed to the Platja d’Aro area, after the alarm was raised that a man was trapped. However, it took emergency services four hours to locate the body, because of the extreme conditions. Sources said he was given permission to sleep in the garage by its owner, because he was going through hard times, economically, and had nowhere else to stay. The alarm was raised on Saturday afternoon, and it is still not clear why the man could not escape. But police have launched an investigation. La Vanguardia reported that the garage door was closed and that flood water seeped underneath until the unit filled up, completely. The tragedy occurred as large areas of Barcelona and Tarragona were battered by an onslaught of heavy rain and winds. This latest death was the eighth to be attributed to flooding and bad weather in the past fortnight. A further seven people were killed in the regions of Alicante, Albacete, Almeria and Valencia, following the worst storms for 140 years, earlier this month.

TENERIFE Cabildo this week began demolishing the Casa de los Bethencourt, the ruined house by the Los Cristianos boules courts, on the paseo marítimo de Los Tarajales.

The commitment to cleaning up the tourist areas, especially this particular demolition, will enable improvements to the walkway plans, as well as improving the coastal views. Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabé welcomed this action, saying: “The promenade rehabilitation project can continue, putting value on an area of great importance for Los Cristianos. “The tidying-up of public spaces will improve the

experience, satisfaction and spending of tourists. And, for this, it is essential to give new impetus to a mature destination, such as Los Cristianos.” Arona Mayor José Julián Mena said: “This part of Los Cristianos has been abandoned for many years, but this new step will enable

us to continue to recover the walkway and surrounding areas. “The house demolition will not only free the coast’s public space, but will also enable improvements to the park, which is attached. It will give direct access to the sea, for the enjoyment of tourists and locals.”

But as the officers were arresting him, one of them received several kicks, and, because of the circumstances, he was restrained and handcuffed. Then, because of his medical history he was taken to a mental-health unit for assessment. When officers questioned local people, they were told that this wasn’t the first time he had behaved in such a

manner. But his behaviour was worse than they had ever witnessed. On past occasions, when he became violent, the bar’s waiter was able to calm him down. He then contacted the appropriate person to collect him. This wasn’t the case on Sunday, however, because he suffered an injury, and had to go to the local medical centre for treatment. But the antagonist pushed hard against it, trying to gain entry, and injured the waiter’s arm. JUST one day after Thomas Cook was liquidated, costing 21,000 people their jobs and stranding 150,000 Brits abroad, travel company TUI updated the markets as to its current state.

While stranded Brits abroad are still talking with officials about getting home, and with tens of thousands of workers at failed travel giant Thomas Cook still trying to work out what to do next, rival TUI has explained its current position. After reassuring TUI customers who booked Thomas Cook flights that they would get home, TUI Group Chief Executive Friedrich Joussen (pictured), viewed his own firm’s prospects. Ahead of the company’s annual results, he said: “Our business still proves to be resilient, even in this challenging market environment.” But he admitted it wasn’t a walk in the park, adding: “These external challenges will continue in 2020.” Others were more candid

Fireman suspended after talking to Press THE President of a firefighters’ union, Pablo Gonzalez, is a working fireman, but he has been suspended without pay for two days, for talking to the Press. Gonzalez also heads the Asociación de Trabajadores de la Brigadas de Refuerzo en Incendios Forestales (Association of Workers of the Reinforcement Brigade in Forest Fires, or ATBRIF). Earlier this year, he was asked by Noticias Leon about the fire situation in Gran Canaria, as a massive blaze raged out of control. Now, though, public company Tragsa, which employs him, says he should have asked their permission before answering, accusing him

of being guilty of “serious misconduct”. In a statement, Tragsa says that its collective agreement states: “Given the particularities of the service, it is necessary to maintain professional secrecy, with respect to all information relating to the Forest Fire Extinguishing Service.” But ATBRIF is adamant that the Gonzalez statements

And TUI’s assessment of its future? “TUI is well-positioned to become an integrated, digital tourism platform business,” said Joussen.

Deathly toll of mobiles

MOBILE-phone distractions by drivers lead to some 390 deaths a year on Spain’s roads, adding up to around 20% of fatalities from traffic accidents. A further 8,000 accidents result in people being injured. The figures come from a study into Smartphone addiction and road-traffic accidents. The Traffic research and Road Safety summary, compiled in collaboration with Direct Line and the University of Valencia, was presented to the DGT Traffic Department in Madrid last Monday. These figures show that the use of mobile phones is one of the main causes of mortal accidents on the road across Spain, and is one of the highest causes, along with speeding and drink/drug driving.

Injured man suffers from fifth-floor fall A MAN aged 46 suffered serious injuries after falling, accidently, from the balcony of his fifth-floor apartment in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. The accident happened last Monday afternoon at the apartment block, in the Las Torres urbanisation. An ambulance was requested immediately, and fire-fighters were also sent to assist. On arrival, the medical team began to assess the individual, and it was clear to them that he was in a critical condition, with several body injuries. The fire-fighters then got to work, transferring the victim carefully, from where he had fallen, to the medical ambulance. He was then rushed to the Dr Negrín University hospital in Las Palmas, where he was admitted for further treatment.

Iberia workers ready for eight-week strike

IBERIA’S groundhandlers are set to stage an eight-week walk-out, in protest at the national airline’s suspension of negotiations with unions.

The Union General de Trabajadores (UGT) has called for strikes every Monday, from 30th September until 18th November. The nationwide strikes come off the back of those in August, which took place at airports in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga and Bilbao, leading to hundreds of flights being cancelled. The Iberia management suspended negotiations following the summer round of strikes, saying: “We cannot continue negotiating in good faith, subject to the blackmail of strikes.” The UGT has called on all its Iberia members to join the

strike, as well as members of Iberia’s workforce, who belong to different unions. Iberia has around 13,000 ground-handlers across Spanish airports. These include airport personnel, such as baggagehandlers and mechanics in charge of aircraft maintenance, as well as service staff. The UGT argues that the previous terms it signed with Iberia were agreed, on the basis of ensuring the sustainability of the airline. The agreement involved the union accepting concessions on wages and working conditions. The union says that Iberia’s fortunes have since reversed, and the company now has record profits, and a high volume of work. With this in mind, the union wants better conditions for workers, to reflect the airliner’s improved trading position.

Sanchez so near, yet so far, from regaining seat

PRIME Minister Pedro Sanchez’s PSOE party would win a bigger majority if Spain were to hold a General Election next week.

That’s the forecast by a 40dB survey, which showed that Sanchez would actually see his majority increase. Yet the socialist leader has been unable to form a government in recent weeks, which means Spain is on track for its fourth election in as many years, on 10th November. The latest poll predicts that the PSOE would jump from 123 seats to 132, but it would still be a long way off the 176 seats needed for an absolute Sanchez majority. Ciudadanos would shed 23 seats, dropping from 57 to 34, making them the biggest losers, according to the poll. The Partido Popular (PP) would redeem itself after the snap April election, which provided the worst result in its history, the poll predicting its votes would rise from 66 to 94. Far-right Vox would also lose 18 seats, meaning that even if the right-wing parties made

Luton airport gains Wizz Tenerife link!

LUTON Airport is gaining a new, lowfare route, thanks to Wizz Air UK launching a connection to Tenerife, from 16th November. Airline chiefs say it will create 70,000 new seats at Luton, as well as around 50 additional, indirect jobs in the UK. It will also be offering 63 routes to 30 countries from the airport, and Owain Jones, Wizz Air UK Managing Director, said: “It is our pleasure to announce another long-awaited route, to a popular Spanish holiday destination.” He added that the new route demonstrated the airline’s commitment to offering low

fares and destinations across all of Europe, connecting the UK with more leisure destinations.” The airport enjoyed its busiest-ever summer this year, welcoming 5.3 million passengers between 1st June and 31st August, which was a 7.3% increase on the previous year. Less than a fortnight ago, the airport welcomed FlyBosnia, which was celebrating its inaugural flight from London to Sarajevo International. It was the first and only direct flight to Sarajevo to operate from any UK airport in over a decade. Jonathan Pollard, LLA’s Chief Commercial Officer, said: “The airport was delighted that FlyBosnia had chosen Luton Airport as its UK base.”

Bomberos take on internet challenge

ADEJE’S voluntary firefighters, the Bomberos, have risen to the Tetris Challenge, sweeping across the internet, involving all emergency services across the world. This new viral challenge, an initiative created by worldwide emergency bodies, is creating a big stir. The challenge itself consists of the emergency bodies

placing all the necessary equipment, staff and vehicles they would use for an intervention, all in a position as though it were a scene from the famous game. An aerial photograph is then taken and then posted. The first to practise what has now become a viral challenge were members of the Zurich police department, who decided to place all the equipment, and then take the snapshot with a drone. The challenge is based on

the technique known as “knolling”, which creates compositions with different objects, and the key is to place all objects at perfect, 90-degree angles. The novelty is spreading like wildfire among security and emergency departments from across the world; some police officers have even posed for the shot, with either detainees or police dogs. Adeje’s fire-fighter volunteers were the first to accept the challenge across the Canaries.

Do Spanish schools leave your children jet-lagged?

A STUDY by Valencia’s Quirónsalud Hospital, has investigated a link between teenage fatigue and school hours. And Gonzalo Pin, a leading paediatrician at the hospital, wants a change in the school timetable, to coincide with a teenager’s body clock. Pin believes the issue is that the general school-day for adolescents is 8am-2.30pm, which means the youngsters won’t eat lunch until 3pm at the earliest, thus pushing work, study, dinner and bedtime further into the night. This creates a perpetual jet-lag effect, while the current school hours also work against a teenager’s biological clock, because they are less likely to be alert and functioning before 9am. “Our research shows that adapting school timetables to the biological clock increases academic performance by at least 1%, particularly in children who had been performing poorly,” said Pin. “It also reduces the number of behavioural problems in the classroom, making learning time more efficient.” As a result of the study, schools in Catalonia are trialling a new scheme, in which students are being given a 1-2pm lunchtime. That means they don’t have to eat when they get home. Pin is also pushing for school opening times to be pushed back an hour, to 9am, so that students can have for a proper breakfast before arriving. It will also give them time to wake up properly, before lessons start.

Salmonella outbreak leads to closure of food premises THE Canarian Government has served an official closure on an establishment preparing food in Lanzarote’s Playa Honda, following a salmonella outbreak.

The premises are believed to be the possible origin of the outbreak, in which 14 people have so far been treated at Arrecife’s emergency department, in Doctor Molina Orosa Hospital. Lanzarote’s Public Health Department Director, Noelia Umpiérezm, has

confirmed that the corresponding protocol was set in place on Monday morning. The premises were visited by the relevant parties, before being closed, officially, for business. An investigation has begun into how and why the salmonella occurred. Ms Umpiérezm said: “Initially, we suspect that the origin of the poisoning had come from a Spanish omelette, but those who were treated at the hospital had also eaten chicken and croquettes.” There is concern that the affected product was bought and taken home by the people.

to be discovered, and he was forever changing his routines. He moved around constantly and didn’t have a known address, switching from abandoned houses to

caves. He was also known to have slept on beaches along the southern coastline. But, thanks to the diligent work of National Police, they learned that he was frequenting Los Cristianos, and caught him after a small chase near the Plaza del Pescadores. Once identified by officers, he was arrested and taken to their station. The detainee and the police statement are now at the disposal of the judicial authorities, who will leave him in prison until the extradition process is activated.

Anger as Burntwood tourists deface image of Los Gigantes

A GROUP of Staffordshire tourists have made themselves known in Tenerife, but for all the wrong reasons! A disgruntled Los Gigantes resident has called the Burntwood vandals “idiots”, because they spray-painted their postcode on a picturesque viewing platform, and, it seems, they are from the WS7 area. The ex-pat said: “I reside in Los Gigantes, and on one

of my recent walks around the shoreline, I visited a viewing platform. It’s a beautiful view, visited daily by hundreds of tourists. “As a Brit, residing in Los Gigantes for the majority of the year, I appreciate how proud the Spanish are of Los Gigantes, working 24/7 to maintain its beauty, collecting bins, sweeping, cleaning roads and more, mainly overnight to ensure that the village is pristine for tourists each morning.”

Medical-equipment thieves thwarted by healthy police A GANG, organised in cells of three to six people, who roamed around Spain and other European countries, stealing valuable medical equipment, have been arrested and charged with lifting gear worth a total of €60m.

Mainly, they mainly stole endoscopes, which fetch a high price, from hospitals, polyclinics and health centres. The goods were then shipped to Colombia, using parcel-delivery companies. Once there, the equipment was sold on through specialist companies and internet portals, which operated in the US and Europe. To commit the robberies, all the gang members travelled throughout Europe. They remained together for their criminal actions for up to six months at a time, and travelled thousands of miles to enhance their crimes. The lawful investigation began at the beginning of the year, when Spain’s

‘Messi’ drug-dealers make real hash of it

Cash and drugs being collected by officers

National Police detected their presence. Officers realised rapidly that the gang were operating throughout Europe. During several months of investigation, they learned that the criminal activity focused on hospitals, polyclinics and health centres in Spain, Portugal, France, Germany and Denmark. The National Police called in Europol to help coordinate operations with police forces in the other nations affected. In the first phase of the operation, six members of a cell, four in

Denmark and two in Spain, were arrested accused of a robbery in Herning (Denmark) worth €2m, and another in Dusseldorf (Germany), which reaped €1.5m. The second phase took place in Colombia, against the companies in charge of reintroducing the stolen goods to the market. Spanish, German and Italian police joined their Colombian colleagues for the operation, and 22 searches were carried out, involving 28 pieces of equipment, valued at more than €50,000, which were all recovered.

A HUGE drug-dealing operation, led by the “Messi of Hashish” has been busted by law enforcement agents, and what a bust it has proved to be!

Among the seizures were: some 6,060kg of hashish, five high-speed vessels, valued at €1.5m, 17 stolen vehicles, a whopping €480,000 in cash, four short and two long weapons, and a sum of €94,00 has been blocked in 20 bank accounts. And that’s not all, because

an entire shipyard has also been intercepted by the Guardia Civil. The illegal activities took place in Seville and Cadiz, the dealers operating along the Guadalquivir river, with shipments coming from Africa. Now, 70 men and eight women are under arrest for their role in the criminal gang, while 15 orders have been issued for other members, still on the run. The Guardia Civil have also blocked dozens of bank accounts, intercepted 14 vehicles, as well as three vessels, and infiltrated six homes in Algeciras, each valued at over €3m.

Abducted girl, 16, rescued from her forced marriage

A 16-YEAR-OLD girl has been rescued, after being abducted by a man she met on the internet, who took her to France for a forced marriage.

The child’s mother reported that she had disappeared from home with an adult Romanian, with whom she had a relationship through social networks. The man, who travelled from his family home in France, intended to remove the minor and marry her, according to his family, and their cultural customs. The teenager later told her mother that she was in France against her will, and that she was afraid of reprisals from the man’s family, against her or her relatives, if she refused to marry or fled. Spanish police found that both young people had agreed to meet in person. But far from a simple meeting, the man abducted the girl. After spending the first night in a Benidorm hotel, they continued their journey to France. But once the border was crossed, the man’s family telephoned the child’s

mother, repeatedly, to discuss “the wedding”, but to no avail. Finally, the mother travelled to France, and, after having a conversation with the man’s family, in which they insisted on the marriage, mother and daughter managed to see each other in private. It was the first chance the girl had to tell her mum that she was there against her will, and that she wanted to return to Spain to be with her family. When the mother was back in Spain, she told police everything, showing them the WhatsApp conversations she’d had with her daughter, in which the youngster

expressed her intention to escape as soon as possible. In addition, she gave her mother the co-ordinates of where she was being held, by using the geolocating feature of her mobile phone. A European Investigation Order (EOIO) was issued to the French authorities for the location and protection of the minor, as well as the identification of the people holding her. After several phases, in which the officers worked in coordination with French Police, the girl was finally located in France, safe and well, and has returned to her family in Spain.

Police detain ISIS man, immersed in its culture

AN alleged member of DAESH (ISIS), who was storing manuals on how to carry out terror attacks, has been arrested by the National Police. He was also a follower of several, restricted, proDAESH jihadist messaging groups, which have been the main source of threats against Spain. The man is also believed to have shown several contacts his oath of allegiance to DAESH leader Al Baghdadi, which has sometimes been the previous step taken by members of the organisation, before carrying out attacks in Europe. The detainee, now being held in Algeciras, is said to have downloaded and stored videos and manuals for self-training to commit attacks. These tutorials gave detailed information on how to make home-made explosives, as well as how to carry out attacks with a knife or vehicle, or both.

Police say his access to 20 messaging groups, where he could chat to DAESH fighters in conflict zones, shows how deeply immersed he was in terrorist culture. These groups have highly-restricted access, limited to “trusted” DAESH sympathisers. And without a regular job, say police, he spent most of his day accessing these social networks, compulsively, to download, store and view manuals and pro-jihadist videos, as well as disseminating his opinions against the West. Officers claim that the detainee was highly radicalised, and at a high stage of self-indoctrination and self-training. In fact, he alluded to the fact that he lived in “Al-Andalus”, instead of in Andalucia, and he stated: “They would catch him with the help of Allah.” In a search carried out at the detainee’s home, agents seized computers and hard drives.

Sterling rocked by chaotic month in British politics

at currencies direct

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next month.

There have been some significant movements in the currency market, over the last couple of weeks, with GBP/EUR trading between 1.09 and 1.13, and EUR/GBP retreating to 0.88. Meanwhile, GBP/USD recovered from a three-year low of 1.19 to 1.24, whilst EUR/ USD fluctuated around 1.10. The pound has been met by some dramatic swings over the last month, hitting some key levels against its peers, as it was rocked by UK political developments. This began with Boris Johnson’s announcement that parliament would be suspended for five weeks, beginning early September,

17 CW

a move widely perceived as attempting to frustrate attempts to block a no-deal Brexit. Unsurprisingly, this knocked sterling sentiment, even sending GBP/USD plummeting to a three-year low. However, subsequent movement in the pound has been largely positive, as Johnson faced a number of setbacks, thought to lower the odds of a no-deal Brexit. This included the loss of his

majority in parliament, the passing of a bill compelling him to seek another Brexit extension, and the rejection of his calls for a snap election. Adding to the upside in sterling was also a string of upbeat UK economic data, including a robust GDP reading, which helped to dispel concerns of a recession. Meanwhile, the ECB’s stimulus measures were

ultimately received positively by markets, helping to buoy the single currency, going into the second half of September. What do you need to look out for? UK political developments are likely to continue to act as the main catalyst of movement in the pound, as we get closer to the current Brexit deadline, on 31st October. The upcoming EU summit in

mid-October will likely be key for GBP investors, as all bets will be off if Boris Johnson fails to secure a deal by then. Meanwhile, the euro may struggle to find support over the coming month, if German data remains in the doldrums. Europe’s largest economy looks to be teetering on the edge of a recession, with any additional sign that growth in the country will contract again in the third quarter, likely to dent the appeal of the single currency. What Britain Buys And Sells In A Day

In the first episode of this brand-new, three-part series, presenters Ed Balls, Ade Adepitan and Cherry Healey delve into the hectic world of Britain’s imports and exports. As our trading relationships face their biggest change in decades, they explore how much we really know about the science and systems that enable Britain to import and export goods around the world on an unprecedented scale. Ed is at London Gateway - a huge port on the Thames - to see how the fruit and veg that we love travels across the globe but arrives on our shelves in tip-top condition. From trying his hand at being a truck driver, sitting in a 16-storey high crane to investigating how apples are starved of oxygen to keep them fresh, he reveals all the tricks of the fruit and veg import export trade. Ade travels the world looking at how Britain’s changing tastes for fruit and veg are impacting farmers everywhere. First, he visits Peru to see how Britain’s obsession with healthy eating has created a booming economy for avocado farmers. Next, he visits a business in the Netherlands which is home to 11,000 acres of greenhouses. Here, they can intensively produce almost 400,000 tonnes of tomatoes every year - much of it bound for the UK. He then heads to one of the largest grape-growing regions in Spain to see how producers grow sweet and crunchy grapes to satisfy British tastes. Meanwhile, Cherry meets British producers to see what and how we export to some surprising places. She starts in Evesham, learning how importers play the global fruit and veg market to keep Britain fed. Later, she meets a British farmer who is keeping the Middle East supplied with apples deemed too big to eat on the go by UK consumers. She also speaks to a Cambridgeshire potato farmer who is selling spuds to the Irish, and a sparkling wine producer whose product is being snapped up all over the world.

After a bit of gentle persuasion by Marion, Mike and Karen have decided to move in together, and are flat hunting in Scarborough. However Mike’s promise to Karen - that he’ll tell Bigsy he’s moving out - is proving more difficult than he thought. Bigsy has other things on his mind though, namely Lisa Marie. Meanwhile Geraldine finally admits to Karen that she’s feeling the strain of the salon’s financial difficulties, and things only get worse when the police pay her a visit. They have received information from a reliable source about what happened to Mrs Bookham’s money... but who has unwittingly let the cat out of the bag?

Love In The Countryside BBC2, 21.00

Seven rural singles from across the UK enlist the help of farmer’s daughter Sara Cox, as they take the bull by the horns in a mission to find true love. Can cupid work his magic? Across this six-episode series Sara Cox plays cupid to help seven rural romantics find the partner of their dreams. In the third episode, 58 year-old sheepdog trainer Katy welcomes three suitors to her home for a long weekend trying out rural life in the remote Cumbrian fells. When painter and decorator John, ex-motorbike champion David and ex-professional footballer Carl arrive, the weather is bleak. But a morning herding sheep and mucking out kennels doesn’t dampen their spirits. It’s been more than ten years since Katy’s last relationship, and when one of her love matches spots an opportunity for some alone time, she’s excited to experience a romantic spark. Meanwhile, Sara heads to the Cumbrian coast to deliver some love letters to dairy farmer, David. Living in a remote location has made finding a partner challenging for the 35 year-old, but he widens his net and chooses six guys from across the UK to speed date. On the Welsh Shropshire border, 23 year-old Grace takes some rare time off from working on her family’s dairy and sheep farm to chase her chance of romance with hobby farmer Mike. But will romance blossom when she meets him on his home turf?

Inside Prison ITV1, 21.00

Friday means canteen day at HMP Bullingdon - where prisoners are delivered small treats like chocolate and shower gel which they buy with money earned from their jail jobs or sent in by friends and family outside. The only problem is, behind bars goods become much more valuable than they are on the outside, which can lead to debts - and payback. Supervising officer Martin Brock is in charge of distributing the canteen items on D-Wing. When inmates’ debts pile up or things go missing from canteen orders, Brock says the consequences can be serious for prisoners and staff alike.Things turn serious when prison officer Kim Newman takes a blow to the head trying to restrain a prisoner who becomes violent.

The Met: Policing London The critically acclaimed observational documentary series returns for a third series, with seven new episodes following the work of Britain’s biggest and busiest police force. Filmed during 2018, a year when violent crime was on the rise on the streets of London, cameras follow top level management to front line officers as they deal with this latest pressure. From complex homicide investigations to policing protests at President Trump’s visit; tackling thieves on mopeds to dismantling London’s biggest gangs and the day-to-day emergency response, this series captures the enormous scale and breadth of policing the capital. In this first episode, detectives from the Met’s Sapphire team deal with the case of a distressed woman who has been raped by a stranger. On her way home, she realised she was on the wrong bus and a man offered to help her. But when she got off, he threatened her with a knife. The detectives need to find the rapist as soon as possible and uncover some vital CCTV evidence near the crime scene. When the Sapphire team view the footage the detectives are shocked by what they uncover, and bring a man in for questioning. When the suspect denies rape the team have just 24 hours to get enough evidence to prove that he is lying. The capital’s four major hospital trauma centres have treated more than 400 stabbing victims in the first seven months of 2018. The Met is under huge pressure to tackle knife crime, and task the Territorial Support Group (TSG) to increase the controversial tactic of stop and search. The TSG target and patrol some of the London Boroughs with the biggest increase in violence, but when they try to carry out searches they face strong reactions from some members of the community. In South London a man wearing a £130,000 Franck Muller watch is robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight. The victim of the armed robbery is former Crystal Palace FC chairman and radio sports pundit, Simon Jordan. Croydon CID is tasked with finding the armed robber and it doesn’t take long to identify the suspect - a known career criminal who’s already wanted for other offences. But trying to find him is another matter. The team get embroiled in a week long game of cat and mouse as he evades capture and when they finally locate an address where he might be living he goes on the move again. Frustrated the detectives decide to lie in wait in the hope they get another chance to strike.

A PLUMBER is melting the world’s hearts, after the revelation that he fixes pipes and boilers for vulnerable customers without charge.

In fact, James Anderson has helped thousands of people in need since closing his private business and relaunching as Depher, a not-for-profit company. His generosity came to the fore after a bill was posted online, showing that he charged a 91-year-old woman, who has acute leukaemia, absolutely nothing! The Burnley father-offive wrote: “No charge for this lady under any circumstances. We will be available 24 hours to help her, and keep her as comfortable as possible.” But James said of the positive public reaction: “We didn’t expect it. It’s been everywhere.” He raises money via crowd-funding and donations, and helps people across Lancashire. James was inspired to wind down his private work and begin Depher

Kindly plumber happy to work for the aged and poor, for nothing! to debt? Why are you doing this?” he said. “But to me, debt is debt… I would rather owe some money to somebody and another person be alive and

happy and safe. It’s an ethos that’s in my heart, and it will always stay there.” Having helped locals in Lancashire over the past two winters, James

hopes to take Depher’s work country-wide. “I’ve spoken to quite a few engineers around the country, and they’re all for it… it’s just getting the funding,” he said. “I don’t want any person who is elderly and disabled in this country, in this day and age, to die or suffer because of a cold home, or a lack of funding to repair the boiler. “It shouldn’t be happening. That number should be down to zero. Simple as that.”

Expats will be repaid for unfinished homes

after seeing an elderly man treated poorly by another engineer. And, since 2017, he has provided free, or lowercost plumbing, to those in need throughout the winter. He claims the switch

to not-for-profit work has left him with debts of around £8,000, although he insists the shortfall is under control. “A lot of people close to me ask: ‘Why are you getting yourself in

A JUDGE has ruled that British expats must each receive compensation of up to €150,000 by developers, for homes that were never completed.

The Almeria judge gave two administrators of the New Medina Villas SL company six months to demolish the 111 unfinished buildings in Zurgena. It must also repay some €650,662 to the foreign citizens, mostly British, who had invested in the properties. The administrators, who were given 10 days to make the payments, will have to prove to the court that they had done so. The individual sums range from

€73,830 to €151,030, and Judge Marta Ines Sierra also gave them six months to begin the demolition. The company must also cease trading, while the developers are banned from working in any industry, related to real-estate development. Some 14 foreigners, mostly Brits, brought the case to court privately, demanding the return of the money they paid for the homes, and the expenses caused by their seizure. Th action came after the works were paralysed by a court order in January 2005, for being on illegal land. The homes were never “finished or occupied, and by 13th September 2018, were still in a state of abandonment”.

Three dumped from van FIVE people were arrested, after three men, one of whom was dead, were thrown out of a van on a motorway near Sevilla.

They were dumped at the side of the A-480 motorway, near the exit to the coastal town of Rota. Police believe the men were involved in a shooting which took place earlier. Subsequently, officers arrested one person, believed to be connected with the Sevilla shooting, following a police chase. Another four men, all foreign nationals, were arrested on the A-66 motorway, after security forces

intercepted the van. The two surviving men are being treated in hospital in Cadiz for serious injuries.

Man is out of coma, By gum! What & back in Scotland a good idea! Accion del Sol News

SCOTSMAN Gavin Robertson, left in a coma after being felled by a single punch during an unprovoked assault on 28th August, has been flown back home from Ibiza.

The 28-year-old was put into a medically-induced coma because of the seriousness of his condition: he had bleeding on the brain and had developed a severe lung infection. Three weeks later. Gavin, from Stewarton in Ayrshire, regained consciousness, with his partner Kirsty McMaster at his bedside. She posted on Facebook that he had opened his eyes and was responding to questions, although his recovery was slow. A Facebook fund-raising page was set up to help pay bills, because he did not have travel insurance. His mother said he had been preparing to fly home, just seven hours after the attack. He had been on a stag do with friends when he was punched in the back of the

head as he stood at an ATM. “As far as I’m aware, they had been having a great time,” she told the Daily Record. “They hadn’t had any problems with anyone, and I’m told that what happened was totally random. They were on a night out, he went to the cash machine… and the worst thing happened!” Family friend Elaine White said on the Facebook page, where €48,000 had been collected to pay for the medical flight home: “Happy

to be able to tell you that Gavin was repatriated to Scotland earlier today. “Thanks to your donations and fund-raising, this part of Gavin’s journey has been less of a nightmare for his family. “Thank-you all, once again, for your kind wishes and words of encouragement for the family, and for all of your donations and fund-raising. “The journey for Gavin and his family is not over yet, but he has come a very long way so far.”

Heaviest star of all, too mighty to exist! AN artist’s impression of the pulse from an enormous neutron star is being delayed by the passage of a white dwarf star, between the neutron star and Earth. This phenomenon, known as “Shapiro Delay”, enabled scientists to work out the star’s mass, leading to astronomers to disc the heaviest star in the universe which, they say, is more than twice the mass of our sun. Curiously, the star is just 15 miles across, which makes its density and weight so huge that it is almost unimaginable. It is about 700,000 times heavier than Earth, and is known as a ‘neutron’ star. Basically, it happens when a giant star collapses in on itself in a massive explosion. Despite bearing the impressive title of “heaviest’ star in the known universe, it has the uninspiring, official name of J0740+6620. According to the US team studying it, J0740+6620 “is the most massive neutron star ever detected; almost

too massive to exist”. The measurement approaches the limits of how compact a single object can be, without crushing itself into a black hole. It was detected about 4,600 light years from Earth by the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. And one light year is about six trillion miles! But of all the stars in the universe, this one is the heaviest, insists NASA. “This neutron star is twice as massive as our Sun,” said Paul Demorest, from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO), in Charlottesville, Virginia. “This is surprising, and that much mass means several theoretical models, for the

internal composition of neutron stars, now are ruled out. “This mass measurement also has implications for our understanding of all matter at extremely high densities, and many details of nuclear physics.” West Virginia University’s Maura McLaughlin and Duncan Lorimer used the Green Bank Observatory to research the neutron star. They used an effect of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity to calculate its mass, thanks to an orbiting companion star. As the white dwarf passes directly in front of the pulsar, it causes a delay for the time the radio waves take to reach Earth.

WHO is this beautiful kittykat? Meet Vitani. She arrived at K9 in March of this year, and is around two and a half years old. She is blind in one eye, but can see very well with the other one.

She is extremely loving and playful. As you can see from the lovely photograph, she is Siamese. Unlike some of our cats at K9, she loves to be picked up and get loads of cuddles. She loves them so much that she will actually climb on to your lap, just so she can receive more and more of them! She loves to play and will engage with anyone who shows an interest, or who wants to play back. Vitani does get on well with other cats, so would be OK living in a house that already has cats as part of the family. If you have been wanting to adopt a cat, or have been thinking about it but are not quite sure, this beautiful girl would be a great cat to adopt. Can you give her a second chance, and help her to find her forever home?

She has so much love to give, and is just waiting for the chance to be loved, too. She is a firm favourite among us all at K9, and we would be so happy to see her go to loving home. Even if you cannot adopt a cat right now, please come up to K9 and give her a cuddle (along with all our other cats and kittens). You may know someone who is looking for a cat. If so, please encourage them to come up to K9 and meet Vitani. They will not be disappointed. K9 is open every day from 9.30am-1.30pm, and everyone is welcome to come and visit our cats and our dogs, who are all looking for their forever homes. CUCUMBERS are part of the gourd family called Cucurbitaceae. They are usually consumed raw or pickled, and the leaves, stem and seeds are used in Asian cuisines. They also readily used in the cosmetic industry for lotions, soaps, shampoos and fragrances. This green vegetable will not hurt your waistline, because one cup of slices has about 16 calories and 4 grams of carbohydrates, with only 2 grams of sugar. To maximise nutritional value, cucumbers should not be peeled when eaten. Cucumbers have multiple benefits. They are high in nutrients with Vitamins C and K, magnesium, potassium and manganese. They are 95% water, and some people get as much as 40% of their water intake from the foods they eat. Being properly hydrated is important for many health aspects, and between the fibre and water of this vegetable, bathroom regularity can be helped. This promotes detoxification and weight loss. They also contain antioxidants that help block free radicals. This

Cucumber, when held on the roof of the mouth, can help reduce bad breath, when mints or gum aren’t handy. They can also remove crayon and pen from walls, which is handy if there are young children around! Cucumbers also clean stainless steel really well. It seems as though having

cucumber on hand is a great idea. It’s definitely a versatile vegetable. Cucumbers are easy to add to your diet and are readily available. They can be eaten raw, added to a sandwich, infused in water, pickled, eaten with goats’ cheese (a popular combination), or be used to make a cold cucumber salad. Cucumber juice is also beneficial for people with teeth and gum problems, especially in cases of periodontitis, which is inflammation of the gums. Cucumber is a good source of dietary fibre, and this fibre massages the gums, and removes bad bacteria from the teeth. The water content of cucumber acts as a diuretic. It encourages the elimination of waste products from the body through urination. Regular intake of cucumber has been shown to be effective in dissolving kidney stones, and maintaining a healthy urinary tract. Eating cucumbers, and using them for other skin or beautyrelated purposes, are great reasons for having them in your fridge. Making sensible food choices helps to keep you healthy, and home remedies save money.

Vision and driving

By Emma

from Motorworld

DO you know whether your sight is really good enough to be driving safely? A recent survey was carried out, and concluded that more than eight million drivers do not see sufficiently well. The study was carried out in Spain by the Insituto de Varilux. Many readers may recognise this name, if they have varifocal glasses, because this is a wellestablished brand. The study was specifically concerned vision, and its effect on driving. Its aim was to reduce the percentage of people driving with visual impairments, without the correct glasses etc. Many people do not consider changing their glasses to be a priority, but if your sight is not up to the required standard, you are more likely to have an accident, or damage

your car when parking, for example, by misjudging other objects. Bear in mind that the medical examination for a driving licences is usually only carried out every five or 10 years, until you reach 70, when the frequency can change. Sometimes, this is solely because of vision. Approximately 1.3 million people die each year, globally, as a direct result of car accidents. In Spain,

around 200,000 accidents result in either death or lifechanging injuries. Some of these could be avoided, if the driver’s vision were better, normally with the use of glasses. Sometimes, an operation is required, to rectify sight problems. In less than 5% of these accidents, sight was found to be a factor. If you have bad vision in your daily life, and notice the impact it has, you can be sure that when driving

this is going to produce even graver risks, not only to you, but also to other road users. Also, 90% of the decisions that are made when driving involve vision. Therefore, it is essential that we raise awareness about how important the vision is when you are driving. In this survey, 29.5% of drivers saw objects that were either blurred, or out of focus. Sometimes, drivers don’t appreciate that when their

vision is sharp, it is easy to calculate safety distances and signs, but when vision is blurred, this is severely hampered. It’s vitally important for your safety, and that of other road users, that you pay particular attention to your sight. If things are not sharp and clear, visit an optician, and see whether you require glasses. This could potentially save lives, and/or help to avoid accidents.

CD Tenerife AFTER a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Elche last Thursday night, in which both teams had lots of chances, hit the post, and looked as though they could win, Tenerife faced Fuenlabrada on Sunday evening. With two wins and a draw at home so far, they were trying to capitalise on their form at the Heliodoro to ensure a good season, yet the visitors had different ideas. Fuenlabrada had not played midweek this season because of a virus, which affected the squad, but it looked as though the extra days off had benefited them because they had a spring in their step. They took advantage of the home team’s fatigue, and some of the decisions by Tenerife coach López Garai, who left out Luis Pérez, Carlos Ruiz and Álex Bermejo from the starting X1. American newcomer Shaquell Moore made his debut (in an official match) and Nahuel Leiva debuted up front. Neither played badly, although Nahuel was far from his best, and both were booked and substituted before the end. There weren’t too many positives for Tenerife in the first half, although Moore broke through in the first minute but couldn’t find Miérez, and the team seemed to switch off, allowing Fuenlabrada grow in confidence. Through Cristóbal and Randy Nteka, the Madrid-based team always threatened danger in a dead-ball situation, and Ortolá, in the Tenerife goal, was troubled by a long shot from Juanma

in the eighth minute, and again from a Hugo Fraile corner after 10 minutes, but they lacked the final shot. Garai’s men, looking uncomfortable, tried to build the game from the back by keeping the ball, and with patience, but there was no precision about their work. They had possession, but hardly created any danger. Tenerife’s first shot was a free header from Filip Malbasic after 21 minutes, which was deflected and did not force Fuenlabrada keeper Biel Ribas to intervene. In the 27th minute, frustrated Tenerife defender Miérez

was shown a yellow card for tripping Juanma over in the area, as the visitors slowed the pace. Ribas did have to make a save from a long shot by Aitor Sanz in the 42nd minute, but it never really threatened the goal. Tenerife were more active in the second half, generating at least six scoring chances. Milla hit the crossbar from a free-kick in the 51st minute, and Álex Muñoz headed wide, six minutes later. Then, to add to their woes, Malbasic hit the post in the 65th, Lasso missed a sitter in the 72nd, and there was even a claim for a penalty when

Mierez was fouled a minute later. But Fuenlabrada scored what turned out to be the winner. A glorious throughpass by Hugo Fraile left Ibán Salvador with a clear path to Ortolá’s goal, after he by-passed Alberto and Álex Muñoz. And Salvador didn’t miss, slotting the ball nicely past the Tenerife keeper after 78 minutes. Although there were still 15 minutes remaining, the visitors needed no more to defeat a Tenerife team, who didn’t trouble the Fuenlabrada goal in the final stretch.

They were unhinged by the undeserved result, the speed of Ibán Salvador, who had a chance for a second which Ortolá saved, and some of the referee Figueroa Vázquez’s decisions, who sent off Robert Mazán before the end for protesting a decision. It was Fuenlabrada’s third away win of the season, and they are now fourth in the table, with a game in hand. Tenerife, on the other hand, are now 14th with just one win in five. They need to rectify that on Sunday night at Lugo, who are one place above them.

World Cup Rugby Union

Megan has that England on the march, winning bounce with a seven-try spree MEGAN Myfanwy Rowland, who has a Welsh mother and German father, is the Canary Islands’ mini-trampoline champion in her age group. And this weekend in Valladolid, near Madrid, the eight-year-old, who lives in Abades and trains in Arafo, will represent the Canaries in the National Championships. After weeks of intensive training, Megan and her team-mates can’t wait to demonstrate their skills again.

England hit their World Cup stride with a seven-try demolition of the US, to make it two bonuspoint wins from two.

Billy Vunipola and Luke Cowan-Dickie scored firsthalf tries from driving mauls, after skipper George Ford went under the posts in six minutes. Four more in the second half, plus two from Joe Cokanasiga, and one apiece from latecomers Ruaridh McConnochie and Lewis Ludlum, were a fitting reward for a much-improved performance in Kobe’s heat and humidity. In a World Cup becoming defined by safe-tackling

technique, US flanker John Quill was sent off for a horrible shoulder charge on replacement Owen Farrell, the England talisman lucky not to suffer serious injury. But the man Farrell had replaced, Piers Francis, may himself face retrospective action after a questionable challenge in the game’s opening moments.

England’s set-piece was dominant, and the US forwards were unable to cope at the scrum, or to find an answer when their opponents set the maul. Tougher tests lie ahead in the shape of Argentina and France, but England will travel to Tokyo this weekend in a muchimproved mood.

Spain secure blind Euro crown again SPAIN were crowned winners of the Blind Football European Championship by beating France in Rome on Tuesday, and both teams secured a place at next year’s Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Spain actually qualified for Tokyo by beating England in a semi-final shoot-out. England’s keeper saved Spain’s first penalty, but they were successful with the next two, and two saves from their own keeper ensured their progress towards the final and the 2020 Paralympics. The English players offered an honourable presence throughout the championship, finishing top qualifiers in their group, only to be overtaken by France on goal-difference. Spain, however, enjoyed a more clear-cut final against France, winning 3-1 with an impressive display for their first success since 2013, when

they also beat the French in the final. They have now won the championship eight times, from the 12 finals played. England recovered from their semi-final loss by winning the third-place play-off against Turkey, edging their rivals 1-0 in a penalty shoot-out. Three Paralympic qualifying spots still remain, however. Two places will be on offer at the Asia Regional Championships in Thailand, in the next few days, while

INJURED football star Samuel Umtiti’s house was burgled, while he was watching his Barcelona side play Valencia in a La Liga game at the Nou Camp.

The French defender, watching from the dug-out, saw his team beat them 5-2 from the dug-out, but his joy was dampened when he learned that four hooded men broke into his house and opened the safe, before leaving the premises, hurriedly. Local Police received a warning from residents that intruders were in his home, and officers have been investigating the incident. The sportsman’s stolen booty, which included cash and belongings, is yet to be confirmed, but reports say the former Lyon defender is not happy! Yet the 25-year-old isn’t the first player to have his

the last spot will be decided at the African qualifier in November. Spain and France have joined world champions Brazil, Americas qualifiers Argentina and host Japan in next year’s Paralympic Games tournament. Hosts Italy finished sixth at the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) European Championship, after suffering a heavy defeat against then-reigning champions Russia.

How to tackle blind football *Five players, rather than 11, make up a blind football squad: four blind players and a sighted goalkeeper. *The ball contains loose ballbearings, so that it rattles when it moves, allowing the players to locate it. *Players learn to keep the ball close, and perfectly controlled, as they dribble across the pitch, letting it away from their feet only when ready to pass to a team-mate, or take a shot.

*Concentration is everything, because, as well as hearing the ball, they’re guided by the voices of other players as they pass the ball. *The coaches also play an important role. During the game, a coach will stand behind the attacking goal, directing the forward players, and another coach stands on the side-line, instructing the midfielder, while the sighted goalkeeper helps organise his defence. *During a penalty, the attacking coach will tap both the vertical posts and crossbar, so that the player will know where to place his kick. *Specially-designed acoustic boards around the pitch create an echo, which enables players to determine their own position, by clicking their fingers to locate each other and the ball, as it goes in and out of play. *Importantly, all players must shout the word “voy” when in defensive situations. This allows the attacking player to determine the position of the defensive players.

Umtiti had no chance of defending against crooks home raided by thieves while he’s at a match. Umtiti’s squad mates, who have suffered the same since last year, include Luis Suárez, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, and Coutinho, who is on loan to German club Bayern Munich. This year, the homes of Barca players Arthur and Kevin-Prince Boateng were also targeted in Catalonia. France international Umtiti has been sidelined
