Issue 1024 6th October - 12th October 2017

MONARCH, the UK’s fifth-largest airline, folded in the early hours of Monday, nearly a year after receiving a £165m bail-out, and left around 110,000 overseas tourists in the lurch.

The company’s downfall is said to have been caused by the impact of terror attacks in key holiday markets, including Egypt and Turkey, the fall in the pound’s value following last year’s vote for Brexit, and stiff competition in the low-cost carrier market. But that’s no consolation for holiday-makers, because many of them will not be able to claim compensation. And some have already been threatened with immediate eviction from their hotels or apartments, and even arrest, unless they pay back the accommodation debts incurred by Monarch. Continued on Page 3

Airports’ strike off THE “pre-agreement” between unions and staff of AENA and Enaire, the State-controlled companies, has led to proposed strikes at Spanish airports being called off. Last month’s industrial action failed to go ahead, because all but two elements of workers’ requests had been agreed in time by the firms. The only issues outstanding by last Tuesday’s meeting were pay increases and the unions’ requirement for 600 extra staff to be taken on, in addition to those replaced through voluntary redundancies and retirements. Monday’s “crunch” meeting with the General Workers’ Union (UGT), Labourers’ Commissions (CCOO), USO, Enaire and AENA, was called in an attempt to resolve these matters and, thus, prevent strikes throughout October and December, and on 3rd and 5th November. The Treasury and Public Works’ Ministries had agreed to review their budget. But none of the parties has revealed what has been finally agreed, although the UGT, CCOO and USO appear to be satisfied enough that they have cancelled the walkouts. These would have sparked airport chaos in 25 flight hubs in every area, from security and baggage-handling, through to cafés and restaurants. So, for the foreseeable future, airports in Spain will now be operating as usual.

Holiday-debt shocker Continued from Front A source said that hotels were furious at being left out of pocket, and that some had not been paid for several months. The CAA has phoned all 2,200 hotels used by Monarch to say it will cover any unpaid costs, via Atol, the Air Travel Organiser’s Licence scheme. But some owners still doubt they will receive what is owed to them. In the Balearic Islands alone, Monarch’s implosion has left hoteliers in Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca facing debts which could run into millions. It has emerged that, overall, up to 750,000 Monarch customers face a fight to get their money back. The stricken airline’s administrator, KPMG, warned that just 10-15% of the company’s 860,000 customers were protected by Atol, which provides compensation to travellers when firms go bust. That number was far fewer than previously thought. The remainder will either get nothing, or face a battle with their credit-card company, or travel insurers, to get their money back. The airline’s dramatic collapse triggered the biggest-ever peacetime repatriation of passengers stranded abroad. The problem is that the airline, in a desperate bid to cut costs, decided last December to stop offering Atol cover on flight-only bookings because it cost the company £2.50 per person. It means that only those who booked a package deal are protected, although the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which runs the Atol scheme, admitted they might have to wait until Christmas to recover their money. Those without Atol protection, who booked flights costing more than £100 using a credit card, can claim a refund under the Consumer Credit Act, although it will be

“Monarch came very close to trading, when it had absolutely no chance of delivering the goods it was selling.” a lengthy process. Those who bought cheaper flights, or used a debit card, might have to rely on their travel insurance, if they have any. But many policies do not pay out if an airline goes bust. One holiday couple in Los Cristianos were threatened with eviction last Tuesday unless they settled a bill of nearly £1,000, owed by Monarch for their accommodation. After many years of travelling to the island with the company, they were shocked to hear of Monarch’s impending collapse on Sunday. They were told at the reception desk that they would have to settle the bill, or be asked to leave. “We went into town to get away from the growing crowd of other angry holidaymakers, who had just received the same bombshell,” said the husband. “The manager wasn’t available, and, apparently, the letters were delivered 10 minutes before he went off duty. “The CAA had assured us it would be paying hotels and other companies. But we never had any contact from Monarch, the company liquidators, company lawyers - or anyone picking up the

pieces for Monarch.” Roland De Gouveia, 41, from Reading, said he and his friends were told to pay £9,000 by a hotel owner in Lanzarote, or they would be locked out of their rooms. Mike Heald, 36, from Manchester, with his family at another Lanzarote hotel, said Monarch had not even paid the owners the £3,300 he coughed up for the holiday months ago. He was told the police would be called if the family left without paying. Surprisingly, Monarch launched a major sale of cheap flights last Friday, less than two days before its collapse. A member of the Commons Transport Committee called for an investigation into the “appalling behaviour” of both Monarch and Ryanair, which has cancelled thousands of flights. Labour MP Graham Stringer said: “Monarch came very close to trading, when it had absolutely no chance of delivering the goods it was selling. It looks like they have been highly-irresponsible. Package-holiday customers being hit with hotel bills will be very angry indeed.” A CAA spokesman said it has given “financial guarantees” to all hotels, and that any

holiday-makers asked to pay again should do so, and then claim the money back from the CAA. Andrew Haines, CAA Chief Executive, said: “This is the biggest UK airline ever to cease trading, so the Government has asked us to support Monarch customers currently abroad to get back to the UK at the end of their holiday, at no extra cost.” Customers abroad have been urged to contact the CAA (or visit monarch.caa.co.uk), which is making alternative arrangements. But they should be able to finish their holiday. They will return to Britain with an alternative airline, almost certainly at a new time, and may be forced to fly back to a different UK airport. But it will not cost them anything, assures the Authority. The CAA added: “We will, of course, prioritise vulnerable passengers, including unaccompanied minors, and make sure that family groups travel on the same flights.” Passengers’ new flights will be published at least 48 hours in advance of the original departure time. Details are published on the regulator’s “my new flight back to the UK” page. From now on, passengers will use aircraft sourced by the CAA from other airlines, including Qatar Airways, easyJet and Air Transat. And rescue flights are underway. More than 30 aircraft will be chartered by the CAA. So far, says Spain’s British Consulate, 34,608 Monarch customers are already back in the UK, flown on more than 173 flights. Yesterday (Thursday), the CAA planned to bring home a further 6,885 passengers from Spain. And, in total, the CAA expects to bring back 10,793 passengers from across all Monarch destinations. Its flying programme continues until Sunday week (15th Oct).

EUPHORIC crowds in Catalunya Square, in the early hours of Monday, celebrated a conclusive Catalan victory in the “independence” referendum, despite a day of police violence.

Preliminary results, revealed by Regional Government spokesperson Jordi Turull, suggested that 90% of the 2.26 million counted ballots, from 5.3m registered voters, were in favour, with more to come from Catalans overseas. Supporters, descending on the Square, drank beer, sang traditional Catalonian songs and danced into the night. The comprehensive victory proved even sweeter for the Catalans, who faced unprecedented violence at the hands of the Spanish National Police and Guardia Civil throughout the day. The Catalan Department of Health revealed that up to 900 people were injured by the sometimes-brutal officers. Two supporters, seriously injured, were receiving treatment in a Barcelona hospital, while some 140 police officers were also reported to have suffered minor injuries. Carles Puigdemont, Regional Leader of Catalunya, condemned the violence, saying: “On this day of hope and suffering, Catalunya’s citizens have earned the right to have an independent state in the form of a republic.” Helicopters flew over the area where his vote was

Catalans vo for independ as police las cast, and some 50 officers with riot shields were stationed around the local sports centre. A video even showed a Guardia Civil riot squad smashing the door of

his polling station, a school, with axes and batons. After the raid, one officer went to another school to cast his vote! But Puigdemont stood

firm, pledging later: “My government will send the total number of “Si” votes to the Catalan Parliament, where the sovereignty of our people lies, so that it can act in accordance with the law of the referendum.” Much-criticised Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy refused to acknowledge that the referendum had even taken place, and, thus, ruled the result invalid. “There was no independence referendum in Catalunya today,” he said, curiously, in a statement on Sunday night, following the violence and bloodshed. He also defended Spain as “a mature democracy and a great nation”, adding: “We have done what we had to do… we are the government

Barcelona hit by strikes THOUSANDS of workers demonstrated outside the Barcelona headquarters of Spain’s national police force on Tuesday amid strikes in protest at police violence during the Catalonia referendum. As Madrid comes under international pressure to resolve its worst political crisis in decades, the crowd chanted “independence”, calling Spanish police an “occupying force” and urging them to leave the region. Barcelona’s municipal police said about 15,000 people had stopped traffic as they rallied, many draping

the blue, yellow and red Estelada flag used by Catalan separatists, shouting: “The streets will always be ours.” Roads across the region were blocked, including motorways used for commercial traffic to and from France. The protest came after

several small labour unions and grass-roots, proindependence groups, had urged workers throughout Catalonia to strike. “An attack on democracy without precedent in recent times calls for a united response,” said Javier Pacheco, Catalonia’s Secretary General of the Co-

misiones Obreras (CCOO) union. Schools and universities were shut, and most small businesses were closed after the unions called them to “vigorously condemn” the cops’ referendum response. Metro stations in Barcelona were deserted, although response to the strike call was patchy elsewhere. “People are very angry,” said Josep Llavina, 53, a self-employed worker. “The police brought violence with them. They have beaten people who were holding their hands up. How can we not be outraged?” Across the Catalan capital, schools and businesses closed down, and Barcelona FC closed its La Masia training ground and Camp Nou offices for the day.

of Spain and I am the Prime Minister of Spain. “My main duty as PM is to obey the law and enforce it, and today, we all have reasons for trusting democracy.” Rajoy “hoped” that Catalan leaders would give up their separatist goals and get back to political normality. But he failed to offer any specific ideas, or announce any new measures, to contain the problem. Even more ludicrous, knowing that thousands of riot police left several hundred people injured, Rajoy said the Spanish state had reacted with “firmness and serenity”. He boasted: “We have been an example for the world. Together, we have built, and will continue to build, a full democracy.” The PM, who also blamed Puigdemont for Sunday’s appalling behaviour, added: “Those responsible are those who have promoted this illegality… don’t look for any other suspects.” The State prosecution has threatened Catalonia’s police force, the Mossos d’Esquadra, with disciplinary action for not shutting those schools in which voting was taking place, and where youngsters were pushed around by riot cops. And the State, resorting to desperate measures to stop the vote, blocked all IT programmes and websites set up for onlinevoting and ballot-counting. Puigdemont set up new ones, but these were taken off-line just as quickly. New ballot boxes were stored in a church overnight to prevent them from being seized, as others had been. Primary and high schools were occupied throughout the previous night by teachers, parents and

ote Yes dence, sh out pupils of every age, from three to 18. They barricaded themselves in, to make sure they could open up on Sunday morning as polling stations, given that the usual venues were surrounded by armed police. The most aggressive police raids took place at Barcelona’s Ramón Llull school, and in another primary school at Sant Julià de Ramis, in the Girona province. Among the members of the

public injured, one person, at the Ramón Llull, was hit in the eye by a rubber bullet, while a man in his fifties, in Lleida’s Mariola neighbourhood, suffered a heart attack when officers burst into the building. He was in cardiac arrest when paramedics found him, but they were able to restart his heart. He was admitted to Barcelona’s Vall d’Hebrón hospital. At least 12,000 police officers appeared on the streets across Catalonia’s

four provinces of the region (Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona). But officers from the Mossos merely handed notices of fines to protesters and left, applauded by the crowds as they did so. In Barcelona, police armed with hammers to break down doors, if necessary, to enable them to seize ballot boxes, were trapped in a school building after demonstrators blocked off their parked vans. Guardia Civil officers were stoned by members of the public In La Ràpita. Officers struggled with voters and protesters of all ages, and several images of old ladies injured, or being dragged away, and of people with bloodied faces, were published. National Police riot officers fired rubber bullets in central Barcelona, then used their vehicles to escape by charging a crowd of protesters. Several photographers in the immediate area were also attacked. Juan Ignacio Zoido, the Spanish Government’s Home Secretary, described the vote as “a sham” and the National Police and Guardia Civil response as “proportionate and professional”. But Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias described the events as, “batons, shov-

ing, and dragging old ladies. What the PP is doing to our democracy repulses me. They are corrupt hypocrites. Useless!” Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera said: “Spanish democracy is at stake now. Most of us Catalans are against the separatist coup.” And Barcelona Mayor Ada Colaus called Rajoy “a coward” for using the police to stop the Catalan vote. The controversial issue has escalated rapidly since Sunday, with a strike on Tuesday, more mass protests, and some 50 roadand-motorway blockages across the region. The same evening, Spain’s King Felipe made a stern TV statement to the nation, condemning Catalan separatist leaders, and promising all Spaniards that the Crown would uphold the rule of Law and Constitution to defend their rights. Spain’s leading stock index fell 2.85% on Wednesday,

with the Sabadell and Caixaban banks, and Catalunya real-estate company Inmobiliaria Colonial, heading the falls. That evening, Puigdemont made his own statement, half in Catalan and half in Spanish, in response to the King’s statement. He described the last few days as “especially intense and charged with emotion… the people of Catalonia are united, as one people, and come together to defend the values of democracy”. Puigdemont even reprimanded the King for his remarks, saying he had “lost an opportunity to address all of the citizens” of the Crown. He added: “I would like to address His Majesty directly, in a language I know he knows and speaks [Catalan]: not like that.” Incidentally, Catalonia’s economic output is worth around one-fifth of Spain’s total gross domestic product (GDP), and the region’s economy is healthy.

Smithy’s Hull patties are a treat over here

Proud Graham Smith displays his prize patties Photo: Kate Woolhouse

IT was crowned the region’s best pattie, and the demand for this treat has even spread to Tenerife from Smithy’s Chippy, in Hull.

The chippy was voted winner of Hull Daily Mail’s “Best Pattie Award 2017”, after readers were asked to help make the decision. And since his tasty victory, Graham Smith, who owns Smithy’s Chippy with his wife, Lynn, says there has been a surge in pattie sales, with orders coming from Tenerife! “A lady came in last Saturday and said she wanted some to take to

her son in Tenerife,” he said. “He’d scoffed the lot by Tuesday; it’s gone crazy since winning the award, I’m making 200 and they will be gone by tomorrow.” And it isn’t just homesick ex-pats in Tenerife ordering the delicious treats from Hull. Graham has fans in Liverpool and London who ring up and ask for dozens of patties. “Winning the competition is the best thing that has ever happened to us,” he said, and it’s certainly not because of the £1,000 prize. “On the pattie sales, I’d say our output has gone up 100%,” he added. “And our customers come from all over Hull.”

Nigerian women shamed THE National Police have detained a 29-yearold Nigerian woman in Arrecife, Lanzarote, for human-trafficking, following the release of two other females from the same country. The madam held was part of an organisation introducing illegal females into Spain, then subjecting them to voodoo rituals and forcing them into prostitution. The Nigerian youngsters are now being assisted by a protection centre for victims of humantrafficking. According to police, they were paying off a debt, ranging from 20,000-55,000 euros, incurred, supposedly, as a result of their trip to Europe. The police investigation began in 2015, when, following anonymous reports, they became aware that Nigerian women were

being subjected to sexual exploitation in Lanzarote. The probe culminated in the Nigerian madam’s arrest, because she was responsible for forcing young Nigerian women to prostitute themselves. She was also charged with human-trafficking. The cops also searched a property in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote, in which a sum of 3,500 euros was discovered, along with foreign currency and computers, which will be analysed by police experts.

Don’t miss the Adeje Festival ADEJE’S Patronal Festival is well under way, with the promise of a weekend full of colour, religion, music and dance. The Plaza de España and Calle Grande are hosting various Festival events, with the Gala tonight (Friday) from 10pm, when neighbourhood representatives take to the stage in a themed show. This will be followed by the first of the fiesta’s big street parties, with live music from the Toque Latino group. Tomorrow (Saturday) in the Cruz de Llano, (the small roundabout at the bottom of the Calle Grande), there will be a number of live bands performing, including Adeje municipal band and the Guía de Isora band, togeth-

er with guests from San Sebastián de Tejina and the Arafo. At 6pm, Holy Mass in the parish church will be sung by the Riveira polyphonic choir. The main festival parade takes place along the Calle Grande from 8.30pm. It’s a family night out, which will be followed by another street party in the Plaza de España, from 11pm. On Sunday (8th Oct), a choral concert is scheduled for the Calle Grande at 12.30pm, and the evening is replete with religious events: a 7pm Mass, and a procession with the participation of the Brylcan Nº2 army band. The Parranda Chasnera plays in the Plaza de

España at 10pm, and, from midnight, the Orchestra Deliciosa take over the stage. Monday (9th Oct), is a local fiesta day in Adeje, when banks, local primary and secondary schools, as well as all municipal offices and centres, will be closed. There will be a morning of events for kids in the Avenida Palo Mayor, music in the Calle Grande from midday, with the Cardón group, Mass at 6.30pm, and, in the Plaza España from 10pm, there’s a festival of humour. All events and concerts are free to the public, and, on most evenings, the small fun-fair in the parking space at the back of Adeje Cultural Centre will also be open.

Lone gunman, who killed 59 innocents A BARRAGE of gunfire was unleashed from a hotel room on to an outdoor, countrymusic festival in Las Vegas on Sunday, killing 59 people and injuring 527 others. The gun maniac, Stephen Paddock, who committed suicide after his lethal spree, will go down in history as carrying out the deadliest mass-shooting in American history. But the big question hanging over his extraordinary behaviour, which will probably never be answered, is WHY? The tragic events played out on two stages: the festival ground which became a killing field, and the hallways of the Mandalay Bay hotel, where the police hunted him down. Tragically, the aftermath of the 64-year-old’s onslaught is one of the most horrific scenes to emerge from the massacre. Dozens of lifeless bodies are strewn amid the debris, which includes beer cans, water bottles and even flipflops and cowboy hats, lost by their owners in the ensuing stampede.

A few of the limp bodies rest alone, while others are coupled up, suggesting they died at the same time. As the gunman sprayed bullets from the 32nd floor of the hotel, the huge audience suddenly realised what was happening and began to flee, their panic-ridden screams heard amid bursts of continuous gunfire. Concert-goers described hearing round after round of gunfire at the three-day event, and Jake Owen, on stage with fellow-artiste Jason Aldean when the shooting began, said: “It was going on for at least 10 minutes.” Nearby, groups of survivors ducked for cover behind a fence, and some lay on top of loved ones to offer protection. Yet nothing seemed out of the ordinary last Thursday,

when Paddock checked into a suite at the Mandalay Bay hotel. Staff had no idea he was carrying a 23-gun armoury, including two rifles, which he mounted on tripods for the intended assault. And police found a further 19 guns in the Sun City retirement community where he lived, plus hundreds of rounds of ammunition. Sheriff Joseph Lombardo, from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, described Paddock as a “lone wolf”, whose intentions had gone unnoticed by hotel staff. His family members are struggling to make sense of his motive, and Eric, one of his three brothers, said: “He had some hand-guns, but where the hell did he get automatic weapons?”

What has changed?

Basically, you have more choice with what to do with the money you save in your pension. From age 55 you will now be able to access all the money which is in your pension pot. Before the changes were made you were limited to what you could take out each year.

Your Pension Pot Take your money as cash

Income payments as and when you want them

Guaranteed income for life

You can do this in one go or as a series of smaller amounts

Flexi-access drawdown

An annuity can secure regular income for the rest of your life

Or Any combination of the above options You don’t have to do anything with your pension pot now. You can leave it invested until you need it. And it’s at that point you can see which of the options available to you that will best suit your circumstances. It’s important you fully understand all the options and the different tax implications they have. Sebastian & St James will be able to help you with this and give you advise which suits your own needs.

Building your pension pot

You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have:

• You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commitments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot.

Do you know you get tax relief on payments you make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot.

Attacked man tried to assault a copper THREE men were arrested by Arona Local Police after being involved in a fight with another man alongside the Los Cristianos beach-front, who was also held. But why they were fighting remains a mystery. Three employees from a local electronics shop are alleged to have caused several injuries to a British youngster, who was said to have attacked them earlier that day. Those held were a 30-yearold Pakistani, and two Indian males, aged 25 and 46, respectively. The Brit was also arrested for

threatening an officer. When police arrived at the scene, the Briton’s face was covered in blood, yet

he tried to flee after seeing the police, to no avail. He refused their help, and also refused treatment from

paramedics. Incredibly, he even threatened to punch an officer, and was behaving so violently that reinforcements were summoned. Eventually, the injured man acknowledged that one of the shop men had beaten him with a stick over the head, but he would not identify which one. The three suspects said they’d had a disagreement with the Briton, who became so violent that they defended themselves, and he hit his head when they had pushed him to the ground. All three were taken to the National Police station and charged with assault, as was the Brit youngster, who will also have had some explaining to do.

Cats and dogs

HAVE you considered getting a cat or kitten, but think you can’t because you have a dog?

The saying goes “fighting like cat and dog”, but there are ways you can fit your new cat/kitten into your already-dog-residing home. If you're bringing a new one into your home where there's a dog, make sure there's somewhere for them to have some space away from each other. Don’t let your dog chase your cat, and keep them separate for a few days. Animals need time to get to know their new home, and each other's smells, before they can deal with getting familiar with another animal. They are more likely to fight or be unhappy if you force them together, and don't let the first encounter your cat/kitten has with your dog be a bad one. They need to feel safe and secure in their new home. Mixing the animals' smells by stroking the cat, then the dog, and vice versa,

also helps. Let them sniff out where each other has been, without the other being present. Smells are important, because that's how they get to know each other. Wait until your cat/kitten seems relaxed and ready before you introduce them, and both are calm. Your cat should have a place where it can get away from your dog. Cat trees, baby gates and the back of the sofa are usually favourites; whatever allows them to escape. A cat will generally attack a dog when it's backed into a corner, with no way to get away.

If your cat or dog hasn't lived with another animal before, it won't immediately know how to deal with the situation, so will need time. It's possible to live with both animals under the same roof, and you may find your cat becomes the boss. In no time, they'll be the best of friends. Adoptions Please consider adopting a kitten/cat from us. All our cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.cats-welfaretenerife.com/pets. Ring or Whatsapp Maria on 6466 29129 (seven days a week 9-6pm), or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm, on 6712 82773. Message us on Facebook, or contact us on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. All kittens go on a week's trial in your home, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. Foster carers needed We do not have a refuge, so we urgently need people who are willing to foster kittens who are too young to be adopted, but need a safe place to stay until they

are old enough to go to a forever home. Also, cats recovering from surgery, illness or injury need somewhere to recuperate. We provide all the essentials for your foster cat: litter, food, litter tray, beds etc., and all veterinary bills are covered. We advertise and find them homes, so you do not need to do this. Please contact us if you feel you can help. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Drought brings crops fears to the mainland

WATER restrictions have been proposed by the Environment Ministry, in an attempt to save farmers’ crops on the Costa del Sol because of the drought there. Parks, gardens and pools could be denied water in southern Spain because the fruit and vegetable harvests could be wiped out. Farmers have discussed emergency measures with the Junta de Andalucia regional authority, including the use of recycled water from sewage treatment plants. But this would take heavy investment. Alejandro Clavero, from the Central Irrigation Board of the Axarquia, said: “The problem is that it all leads to money. Thousands of litres of water are thrown into the sea every month, but putting them at our disposal requires money and time.” The Costa del Sol, Guadalhorce-Limonero and La Viñuela-Axarquia waterboards’ management will this week discus the most effective water-saving methods, and how they will be implemented. Malaga’s Agrarian Association of Young Farmers claims to have demanded such measures for more than three years. General Secretary, Benjamin Fauli, said: “You can’t take measures to deal with a drought if they can’t be carried out through lack of investment. It merely delays the inevitable, when we need an immediate solution.” Some emergency works have been carried out by the Junta de Andalucia, and these vital measures have helped salvage this year’s mango and avocado harvests, which were almost lost. Sub-tropical crops and trees struggle the most in July, August and September.

Paramedics treated all five, a man having the most severe injuries, to his head and a shoulder. Another man suffered whiplash, a woman had arm and leg injuries and two other people were treated by paramedics at the scene, but refused to go to hospital. The others were taken to Hospiten Sur for further medical care.

Navy divers find grenade MEMBERS of the Canarian Navy Diving unit, involved in a training exercise, spotted an unexploded rifle grenade at a depth of 18 metres, off the Playa de Los Cancajos coast in Breña Baja, La Palma. The bomb squad was called to neutralise it with a special charge, deactivating the grenade without detonating its explosive charge, so the impact on the environment and marine fauna was minimal. The operation was supported by Breña Baja’s Guardia Civil and the Local Police, who cordoned off the relative area by that part of the coast.

FOUR children, who lived with their mother and her partner’s rotting corpses for days in Andalucia, had no idea they were dead. The kids, aged between five and 13, thought the couple were just “asleep and cold”, but they had actually committed suicide. The youngsters stayed with the bodies for five days in the Huelva town of La Zarza-Perrunal. Authorities were notified, only when one of the children told a neighbour their mum had been “sleeping for a few days”. The shocked neighbour and landlord called emergency services, who rushed to the home, in which police were greeted by a “strong smell”.

They soon discovered the bodies of Rocio Aguilar and her partner, Jose Antonio, and an examination revealed that the pair had killed themselves by overdosing on medication. A neighbour said she suspected the couple were drug-addicts, after the family had arrived in town just weeks earlier. “They were running from something, but I do not know what,” she added. “But the kids were living in squalid conditions. “They had some mattresses on the floor and they had no water or anything to drink. And the children used wipes to wash themselves.” The children, allegedly, told care-workers they always fed and dressed themselves, which is why they did not notice their mum

Smart Russian detects thieves A RUSSIAN resident of Tenerife shocked the lives out of three thieves, who broke into her house in Golf del Sur and made off with her car last Sunday. She found the vehicle in El Fraile the following day and, discreetly, followed the trio - a man and two women to Los Cristianos.

By coincidence, she saw two Local Police officers on a street there and told them what had happened. She said she had served a denuncia about the break-in with Granadilla’s Guardia Civil. When the trio spotted the cops, one of them threw the car keys away. But one officer found them and arrested the thieves, having also discovered a camera owned by the victim on one of them.

and step-dad had died. Yet they were known to social services, and it is believed that cops had checked out the home days earlier, following concerns from the boys’ school. But they left after the children said their mum was asleep. The boys were all taken into care, and their biological father is now applying for custody.

Cemetery workers stole gold teeth from corpses FOUR workers at a municipal cemetery in Spain have been arrested by police for stealing from corpses. They have been charged with theft and desecration of corpses at El Salvador’s cemetery, in northern Spain’s Oviedo city, in the Asturias. It is alleged that they stole gold teeth, jewellery and personal effects, as the bodies were exhumed from niches and transferred to the general ossuary (a niche for skeletal remains in cemeteries). The four people are employees of the funeral company which runs the municipal cemetery. And, it is thought, their activities had been going on “for years”. National Police officers believe they would have profited by some 11,000 euros from the sale of gold teeth and other effects.

Now, however, the El Salvador niches can no longer be bought, but they can be rented for five years or 50. Once the established time has elapsed, the company managing the cemetery advises the family members, who may either extend the rent or have the remains of their relative exhumed. An undertaker said: “Most people who do not extend the rental period tend to contract funeral services to collect the remains and incinerate them. A very low percentage of remains go to the ossuary.” He added: “Relatives are advised to attend the exhumation if that is what they have decided, but most don’t attend.” And a colleague of the four people arrested said: “Very few families go to the exhumations. They are very unpleasant.”

A TEENAGER in Spain, dubbed the “human snake” because she shed her skin constantly, has been cured.

Sakhalin Davy, an Indian 16-year-old living in Marbella, lost her skin every six weeks, and had to smother her body with moisturiser and bathe every hour to prevent it from hardening. Her family were too poor to afford specialist treatment, leaving her unable to walk without a stick. Her affliction was so severe that she could not even walk unassisted. But when doctors in Spain learned of her plight, they agreed to treat Sakhalin for free, with the help of

The delighted youngster, from Now gong, in the central Indian state of Madhya Preshrank, has returned to India, knowing she will be supported by the medics for life.

Shalini said in Marbella: “I can’t wait to go back home and show my new face to the people there. Now, I want all those people to come and stare at me. “Now, I am confident enough to stare back at those who stared at me and made hurtful comments. I can’t tell you how happy this makes me. It feels great. I haven’t just got a new skin… I’ve got a new life. “In India, nobody would come near me because they thought I was suffering from some contagious disease. Forget about common people, even doctors would not come near me. They would examine me from a distance. “But when one doctor carried me in his arms to the ambulance, I was touched by his gesture and

wondered why we don’t have doctors like him in India. “In India, whenever I went out, people stared with derision. They interrogated me about my illness and suggested various home remedies and treatments. They treated me like a specimen. I felt really bad, so I stayed home most of the time.” Shalini was diagnosed with ichthyosis, an inflammatory skin disease which makes it grow too fast. And she had been shedding her skin every 45 days since she was born. A 19-strong team of specialist doctors, from the International Medical Academy in Malaga, welcomed her to Marbella’s Hospital Banus on 10th September. And they provided treatment worth 50,000 euros, thanks to generous fundraisers. Dermatologist Enrique Herrera said: “We had a very positive response in just 10 days of medication. And I expect, in the next two months, that she will be completely normal.”

The disorientated dolphin

A DOLPHIN appeared in Santa Cruz port on Monday at around 11am, and, despite efforts to relocate it by maritime rescuers, it kept returning.

The maritime team worked for hours, trying to remove the mammal to prevent it being injured by ships or vessels. However, the disorientated dolphin just

wouldn’t stay away from the port. Try as they might, its wouldbe rescuers simply could not persuade the mammal to seek a new play area, out at sea.

Cops imprisoned over man’s death FIVE police officers have been sentenced to four years in prison, over the death of a man in Costa Blanca. A sixth officer would also have joined them, but he died of pancreatitis in custody before the trial. In a plea-bargain, his colleagues admitted taking Diego Perez against his will to a secluded bay in Cartagena, and did nothing to help avoid his death. The events were traced back to 11th March 2014, when the deceased called the National Police after receiving death threats from his neighbours for stealing their bicycle. Two weeks later, his body was found floating in the sea at Cala Cortina, some four kilometres away from his home. Initial investigations were focused on his neighbours. But a witness, who had to be placed in protective custody, said he saw three police cars at Diego’s house, and the officers, while hitting him,

forced him into one of the vehicles. Traffic cameras traced their journey to the beach, and, when arrested in October the same year, all six officers claimed that although they ignored police protocol, they did not make the victim come with them. On arrival at their destination, they said he ran away, and, when he was found dead, they presumed he had drowned. However, an autopsy revealed that Diego had

died before ending up in the sea, and had multiple head traumas and several broken vertebrae. Originally, the officers faced up to 24 years in prison for murder and unlawful arrest. But in court, it was agreed that they had taken the victim to the beach against his will, but they did not kill him. They were each sentenced to two years in prison for involuntary manslaughter, and a further two years for unlawful arrest.

THE Canarian Government has warned town halls to anticipate tropical storms like “Delta” this autumn by carrying out certain, necessary activities in good time. Its Security Department has asked the archipelago’s municipalities to clean ravines and reinforce the entire river network (if there is one), as well as electric lines and gardens, before the possible arrival of tropical storms. Given the considerable rise in sea temperatures,

experts warn that this circumstance is what generates tropical storms, and it can trigger hurricanes or cyclones, which really can be destructive. In 2005, the Canary Islands lacked foresight, and tropical storm Delta damaged the islands severely. The winds increased and reached 140km/h on the coast, and almost 250km/h on Mount Teide, the Tenerife summit. For this reason, the Canarian Government warns municipalities to be as cautious as possible, strengthening walls, towers, bell-towers and all type of infrastructure, which could be affected in a tropical storm.

Coffee cup that cheers COFFEE and cakes was the winning recipe because a total of over 1,000 euros was raised last Friday in Los Cristianos, as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer UK.

Zizi Bar (top right), in The Apolo Centre, raised 634.34 euros, and The Devon Arms (bottom right), just below Avenida de Suecia, collected 470 euros. At Zizi’s, the Golden Girls included coffee and nut-cake, chocolate buns and a raffle to boost the sales, the food and prizes all donated by generous customers. The Devon Arms had its own army of volunteer bakers, as sesame and oatmeal cake, and even gluten-free treats, tempted the taste-buds. A big thanks to the host bars, both regular supporters of the event, the helpers, bakers, coffee pourers and customers. It really was a sweet success!

Anabelle’s big tonic THE charity fund-raiser for cancer victim Anabelle last Saturday raised a spectacular 3,650 euros towards the cost of her specialist treatment in the US. It was held at Palms Sports Bar, Adeje, and was supported by compere Kevin Carlin and a host of popular Tenerife singers, who gave their time freely. There was also a raffle, featuring some super prizes, which contributed

enormously to the final total. Anabelle’s mother, Maria Zobnina, was overwhelmed with the response, as was Yulia Wilson, who helped organise the event. Maria needs 100,000 euros to get her daughter treated by a specialist surgeon in Washington DC. Donations. The fund is now past the 20,000-euro mark, and donations can be made to www.GoFundMe, annabelles-medical-cancerfund.

Sunday 8th October, BBC1, 22.30 To coincide with his 80th birthday, Sir Bobby Charlton At 80 is a very special documentary celebrating the remarkable career of arguably England’s most iconic and greatest ever footballer, Sir Bobby Charlton. Sir Bobby was a key member of the England team that won the World Cup on home soil in 1966 and part of a Manchester United team touched by success and tragedy in equal measure. Charlton survived the Munich Air disaster in 1958 which killed several of his teammates, dubbed the ‘Busby Babes’. He became a crucial figure in the club’s resurgence, winning two league titles and unforgettably in 1968 the European Cup against Benfica. Renowned for his attacking instincts and ferocious long-range shot, until recently he held goal scoring records for England and Manchester United. He received a knighthood in 1994 and was awarded the prestigious BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. A fiercely proud Englishman, Charlton remains a pivotal figure at Manchester United as an ambassador, Club Director and close confidante of a succession of managers. He is still working as he approaches his 80th birthday and devotes much of his time to his Find a Better Way charity, which researches ways of detecting and clearing landmines. The programme features incredible archive from Sir Bobby’s life in football, plus poignant contributions on the Munich crash from survivors including Sir Bobby himself. We also hear from the biggest names in world football like Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Geoff Hurst, Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand, Denis Law, Harry Gregg, Gordon Banks, Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, plus Bobby’s brothers Jack and Tom Charlton, who all pay tribute to the much-loved man they simply call ‘Sir Bobby’.

Basquiat: Rage To Riches

Saturday 7th October, BBC2, 21.00 Nearly 30 years after his death from a drug overdose in 1988, the legendary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat managed to take the world by storm yet again, when one of his Skull paintings from 1982 recently sold at Sotheby’s for the record-breaking sum of over 100 million dollars. The monetary value and art historical importance of work by this former Downtown NYC graffiti artist is now considered alongside the stars of 20th Century painting such as Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Francis Bacon. This film features exclusive interviews with Basquiat’s two sisters, Lisane and Jeanine Basquiat, who have never before talked about their brother and his art for a TV documentary. Contributing alongside them are some of the world’s most powerful and legendary art dealers, including Bruno Bischofberger, Larry Gagosian and Mary Boone. They helped fuel Basquiat’s reputation as he rocketed to art world fame while their own careers and fortunes may have benefited just as much and possibly more. With striking candour, art world colleagues and his most intimate friends, lovers and fellow artists draw a portrait of a handsome, charismatic and fragile personality - and spill the beans on the cash, the drugs and the pernicious racism which Basquiat encountered. The main weapon which Basquiat used to fight the prejudice was his art; the beating heart of this documentary is the painting - the game-changing ways in which it embodied and reflected breakthroughs in music, poetry and a new type of expressionism in modern art.

Saturday Morning with James Martin ITV1, 09.25

CW

Saturday Morning with James Martin sees the hugely popular chef returning to Saturday mornings, with a two-hour show from his very own home. The series reflects James’s love of hearty food as well as some of his other passions…the great outdoors, his beloved dogs and, of course, fast cars. Each week he welcomes two guests into his own kitchen. Familiar faces include choirmaster Gareth Malone and weather presenter Carol Kirkwood. The chef and his guests cook together inside James’s kitchen and in his garden, making the most of his BBQ and pizza oven. Plus, each show features a guest regional chef who cooks in their home or their own restaurant.

America’s love affair with prescription painkillers has led to widespread dependency on opiates. But following a crackdown on their over-prescription, where does this leave the two million Americans who have developed a habit for these high-strength painkillers? With the pills now becoming increasingly expensive and scarce on the black market, vast numbers of Americans have turned to the cheaper and stronger opiate: heroin. The drug now claims more lives in the US than either car accidents or gun crime. And, for the first time in over two decades, life expectancy in the US is declining - largely attributed to the rise in fatal heroin overdoses. In Huntington, West Virginia, Louis Theroux embeds himself in an Appalachian community that is being devastated and stretched to its limits by widespread heroin use. With one in ten babies in the city born dependent on opiates and a fatal overdose rate 13 times the national average, this is the epicentre of the most deadly drug epidemic in US history. Louis spends time with the user community caught in the vice-like grip of drug misuse and follows the emergency services struggling to cope with multiple overdoses each day.

Mark Pougatch presents live coverage of England’s final World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at the LFF Stadium in Vilnius. The Three Lions will hope to have already qualified for Russia 2018 with a game to spare by beating Slovenia three days before this tie. Nonetheless they will be hoping for a fourth win in four meetings against Lithuania to complete their campaign. Jermain Defoe scored his 20th international goal as England overcame stubborn opposition to win 2-0 when the sides met at Wembley Stadium earlier this year.

This brand new series looks at Credit Unions and Responsible Lenders across the country, telling the amazing stories of people whose lives have been transformed by an ethical loan. Today, loans help couple Katerina and Colin set up a health food shop in rural Wales and Syrian refugee Razan take her own line of halloumi cheese out of the family kitchen and into the big time. Viewers will meet a mum who ends up homeless after struggling with redundancy and spiralling debts. And the show follows members of the Lewisham and Bromley credit union, including 78 year-old salsa dancer Leroy who needs £400 for some furniture for his new flat.

Robson Green explores the extraordinary lives and homes of the people who live on Britain’s coastline - from families who are swapping their city homes for a new life by the sea to those who have lived on the coast for generations. Robson’s coastal journey reaches the east coast as he finds out more about the community spirit that makes life by the sea so fulfilling. This week he meets a couple living on a seal sanctuary, the volunteer lighthouse keeper who lives four days a month at the remote coastal location of Spurn Point, and meets the people who live on the former World War I campsite that today houses chalets with listed status.

Eight 21st century lads are to be transported back to the Roman Empire to see if they can cut it as gladiators. The handsome boys will fight it out with help from their loving girlfriends. They may have the muscles but do these lads have what it takes to go down in history? Cameras will follow eight modern day couples as they’re transported to an ancient world where they’ll live and fight like gladiators did 2000 years ago. Along the way there’ll be blood, sweat, tears and plenty of laughs. However, only the very best will make it through to the Emperor’s Games where one of them will emerge victorious and take home the Emperor’s gold (which today works out at ‘approximately’ £10,000!). The boys will be trained by the fearsome “Doctore”, played by David McIntosh, and take part in daily, physical tasks, leading up to a grand final where they’ll battle it out in the colosseum in front of a baying crowd. Those who don’t cut it will be banished from the city.

Pump up that volume!

hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot

IT’S some people’s nightmare, and can cause complications when being cut and styled … fine hair isn’t a joke to some women. There are dos and dont’s when dealing with this type of hair, but there are always those who break the rules. Try not to have this sort of hair too long,

because it only makes it look finer, and keep it above shoulder length. Don’t wear it with a very full fringe, as this consumes too much of the hair in the front; no fringe, or a side one, is better. Colouring fine hair thickens it up

because it changes the texture, and gives the appearance of more hair, especially if it’s lighter coloured. Keep those ends trimmed regularly, and keep them choppy, too. This creates movement, and more bulk. Never go for onelength haircuts because this will only drag the hair down even more. Opt, instead, for longer layers, to add the illusion of more hair. As I said, there are always exceptions; consult your stylist for full cutting and styling options for your hair type.

Check you out! By Carl pattison

F O R G E T frumpy, flat caps and old ladies’ attire, tweed is back. But in such a stylish way, you’re going to want to get your hands on it. The new tweed is threaded with golds and silvers, and adorned with chain and diamonté; Chanelesque, but in a more casual form. Colours range from deep browns mixed with creams and greens, to blacks with baby-pink and silver threads running through. I’ve seen embellished collars and/or lapels, and buttons in golds attached with chains. It’s a modern twist on an old favourite that

never dates. Keep jackets short, and skirts, too; you don’t want to look schoolteacherish. Mix up a tweed jacket with Autumn’s

must-have, slashed jeans, and you have a winning look. It’s all about clashing those fabrics, and creating your own individual look.

THE people who are lucky enough to be able to come to Tenerife for the winter months, after spending the summer in their own countries, are affectionately known as “Swallows”. It’s truly the best of both worlds! Many of these will own their own property here on the island, perhaps renting it out, or maybe leaving it empty during their absence. Either way, now is the time to take a fresh look at your property and see what needs to be done to bring it up to scratch, or even to give it a facelift for the coming months. One of the easiest ways to make a big change is a coat of paint. White is used extensively here in Tenerife because it is bright and fresh, and any dirty marks or faded parts can be easily touched up without paining whole walls. If you want to introduce some colour, select a neutral shade for most of the walls, which won’t be overpowering, and perhaps choose to paint one wall in an accent colour. Too much of a dark shade can be overpowering, and makes rooms look smaller, so be selective about how much colour you introduce, and how dark or intense the shade is. In smaller or dark areas, use light colours to give the appearance

of more space, and perhaps a carefullyplaced mirror to reflect light. Maybe there are some minor building works that need doing, such as new kitchen worktops or even a bathroom refit, or perhaps you’d like to get your sofa recovered or your curtains replaced. It’s better to get these things done at the beginning of your stay, so that you can enjoy the benefits for the remainder of your time here. From a decorating point of view, replace pictures with modern ones, or add cushions which tone with the accent wall. Throw in luxurious colours, and you can quickly give your room a completely different appearance for the winter months. Although the weather in Tenerife is generally good all year round, it’s still nice to make your rooms cosy at night. This can be easily achieved with casual,

colourful throws and cushions, and perhaps some carefully-placed scented candles and indirect, ambient lighting. Overhead-lighting fixtures can be rather harsh, so consider standard lamps with dimmer switches, or table lamps that will create a pool of light and a great atmosphere. Create zones that are comfortable for relaxing, reading and sleeping, and you will truly feel at home in your property. If you work with a good interior designer, he or she will be able to advise you on how to achieve the look you are seeking, source the furniture and fittings for you, and put you in touch with reputable tradesmen for those jobs that need doing. In fact, some will even project manage for you, provided you buy the furniture and fitting items from them. All services mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, who will come to your property. Call them on 922 789729.

Vegetarian delights By Maggie Rose

MONDAY saw the launch of the new veggie menu at Hard Rock Café in Playa de Las Americas, and we were there to sample the new culinary additions! Well, where do I start? Everything was so delicious!

We began with a couple of non-alcoholic cocktails. I sampled the Mango-Berry Cooler, which was made up of mango, strawberry, pineapple and orange juice, topped with limeand-lemon soda, and my colleague decided on the strawberry and basil homemade lemonade. We both tried each other’s, and they were delicious! I have to confess that the new cocktail menu did not only contain non-alcoholic drinks, but there were lots of alcoholic ones! We were asked to try a couple, but, as we were driving, we just had a couple of sips, because it would have been rude to refuse! First of all, to add a bit of spice to your life, there was “The Heat is On”, which comprised premium vodka, spirit of almonds and fresh mint, finished off with jalapeño - hot, hot, hot! We then sipped from another one, “Mule over Rosemary”, made up of gin, watermelon syrup, fresh lime juice with ginger beer, and fresh rosemary.

By this time, we decided that some food was in order, to help make the alcohol disappear! First of all, we tried the sweet potato with

black-bean tacos, corn tortilla filled with spicy black beans, sweet potato, guacamole, shredded cabbage and chili sauce,

served with a side salad. Then came the Hummus Quesadillas, which were spicy, grilled, flour tortillas, filled with garlic herbs and hummus, sautéed spinach, sun-dried tomato and black olives, served with chilli sauce and a side salad. They were delicious, and slightly spicy with a hint of olives. Next came cauliflower wings, crispy buffalo-style with blue-cheese dressing, celery and carrot sticks - a real tangy flavour. All were delicious! By now, we had sampled most of the new veggie menu. They have also added some newbies to the meat dishes, and, again, it would have been rude not to have tried them. Then the Java Lava burger, awakened with an espresso rub, home-made, crunchy,

java onions, melted cheddar cheese, smoked bacon, crispy lettuce and ripe tomatoes, and all garnished with a fried jalapeño. It provided a nice amount of spice with a real meaty flavour, and peppery crisp lettuce gave it a fresh finish. And it still kept arriving at the table, so next we tried the spinach, potato and chicken burger, again new to the meat menu. This was a home-made burger of red skin potato, spinach, chili pepper, coriander and spices, topped with rocket, tomato and cucumber, with a spicy yogurt sauce, with chick peas giving it a nutty flavour. The whole menu was accompanied by tasty, home-made chips! By this time we were totally full, and it was becoming hard

to move around, but we were tempted to try a hot-fudge brownie, topped with nuts, chocolate cream and a cherry, with vanilla ice cream. The restaurant offers a 15% discount for residents, and upstairs, from 3-6pm, it’s Happy Hour, when cocktails and draught beer are half-price. There was a great lunch-time atmosphere, and most of the tables, inside and out, were full. Finally, I must mention Lucian, our fantastic waiter, who was so attentive and looked after us very well. He’s definitely a credit to the company!

Adeje Chicken in Buzanada is owned by Chemmy, who runs the kitchen with all her delicious homemade dishes, and her son, Bryan, who runs the barrestaurant. Chemmy still cooks all your chicken dishes: fried, spicy, garlic, honey or even plain chicken breast and now offering Kentucky fried, all accompanied by her homemade sauces. division 2 Table Those spritely fellas at Yelas - Joint top team in Division 2, Yelas Travellers

TWO weeks into the season, and a few new teams are making a name for themselves, especially in Division 2. It’s a dead-heat at the top between Bar Leones, Reef and Yelas Travellers: two games played, two games

won, all stats equal! At the other end of the table are league newcomers Happy Days, whose first game, at Mad Hatters, ended in a 9-3 defeat. But they still have the whole season ahead of them, and their opponents are a good team, so they knew what to expect. On to Division 1,

in which the usual suspects, Legends A, are leading the pack, winning both their opening matches. They’ve had two tough clashes, against Britannia Inn and Scruffy Macs A, but they lost just six games out of 24! It’s an excellent start for them, but watch out for Nauta Nomads,

who have also won two out of two. Union Bar, a new Division 1 team, are going great guns in third place, after beating Grandee O’Donnells on Tuesday. Another new team to the league, and Division 1, are Scruffy Boys, who are also playing superb pool.

Sport and politics collide FOOTBALL and Catalan pride are strongly entwined at Barcelona, so last Sunday was always going to be an emotional day. A Catalan independence referendum had been declared illegal by the Spanish Government, and a police clamp-down was in place. Smack in the middle was the Barcelona v Las Palmas game, and the home club were trying to get it postponed. But the Spanish FA were having nothing of it, and, amid fears of league punishments and docked

points, the La Liga clash went ahead behind closed doors, but with full TV coverage. It was a volatile situation and both teams stoked it up further. Barcelona came out for their warmup wearing yellow-andred-striped training tops, to mirror the Catalan independence flag. Struggling Las Palmas hardly needed to rile their powerful hosts, yet they chose to adorn their team shirts with a Spanish flag, as a sign of support for the state. For the record (and future quiz questions), Barcelona won 3-0. World football governing body FIFA, who have a

strict policy of no political messages on players’ kit, have only just rescinded fines on England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, for wearing poppies to mark

last year’s Remembrance Day. That gesture has finally been ruled as a charitable display, rather than political. But should the Catalans ever get

independence, sport will again find itself in the spotlight. The Spanish FA have suggested that Catalan teams Girona, Espanyol, and Barcelona would not be able to compete in the Spanish leagues. Football fans lost out last Sunday, and sorting out ticket refunds will be interesting, but do spare a thought for one Australian family. The parents brought their Barcelona-mad son across the globe to see his heroes live, but the nearest they got was having photos taken of themselves, standing forlornly outside the locked gates of the Nou Camp stadium.

Ready, aim, dire! Lugo 1 CD Tenerife 0

By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review

BLAMING the referee for gifting a penalty to Lugo would be too easy a get-out for CD Tenerife, after they slipped up on Sunday.

They had plenty of chances to secure a comfortable win, but Tenerife’s shooting was weak and off-target. Filip Malbasic was the main culprit, but there were plenty of others guilty of schoolboy misses. Having seen how good this season’s squad can be, it is so frustrating when the see-saw tips the other way, and they under-achieve. An early defensive mixup needed a grateful grab from Dani Hernandez, to stop Tenerife’s blushes. Raul Camara and Camille both looked adventurous from their full-back berths. Raul’s foray up the right forced a corner, which was

taken too hastily. Malbasic found a good position in front of goal, but he couldn’t dig out a clean shot, the Serbian following up a few minutes later with

was getting bogged down in midfield. The disease was spreading, and Camille got in on the act. He created acres of room for himself, but his shot was a simple pick-up for the keeper. Longo collected a long clearance down the left, and beat a defender with ease. Guess what? He found the side-netting more attractive than the open goalmouth. Lugo were nothing special, and former Tenerife prospect Iriome was having a quiet game. His only decent chance was ushered clear by the away defence. Aitor Sanz came to the rescue at the end of the half, as Lugo lurked close to goal, sticking out a leg and putting the ball out for a corner. It was a good trade-off, especially when Lugo couldn’t make anything of the kick. a lightweight strike at the The turning point came three minutes into the keeper’s feet. Longo, who was also second half. Fede Vico was having a blunt day, just in a dangerous position in couldn’t impose himself on the penalty area, but Vitolo the game, and Juan Carlos timed his tackle well and robbed him of the ball. But Vic took a dive, the ref bought it, and Dani was beaten from the spot. A collective groan must have been heard from bars all over Tenerife.

Home visit for Ayoze WITH international football giving the domestic variety a weekend off, Tenerife’s Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez is popping back to his roots this weekend. He will be in Santa Cruz for the Plenilunio fullmoon festival tomorrow (Saturday), and, of course, the evening game between his former team CD Tenerife and Nastic. Ayoz, in his third season with Newcastle, still keeps in touch with Tenerife football. And, tomorrow, he is hosting a free football training session for boys and girls between 6-13 years, at the capital’s Campo Juan Santa Maria ground. The session runs from noon until 2pm, leaving him plenty of time to catch up with former team-mates and fans at the Heliodoro stadium. Life is proving good for

him in Newcastle. Ayoze soon mastered English and speaks it well, complete with a Geordie accent! His manager, Rafa Benitez, has his own sweet memories of CD Tenerife because he got them promoted to La Primera in 2001, not bad for his first, seniorcoaching position. It was a family thing when Ayoze moved to

Newcastle. His brother Samuel, two years older and now 26, went with him to keep him company and signed for Blyth Spartans in the Northern Premier League. And Sammy has kept heading North, taking in spells with Alnwick Town and Berwick Rangers, and he’s now playing in Norway’s second division with Nybergsund.

Heads-up boys, plenty of time to rescue this game. But that confident thought took an immediate dent, as Juan Carlos shaped up and launched a rugby-style conversion, way above the goal. Lugo could have increased their lead, a shot clipping the bar on its way out of play. The first sub for Tenerife was a positive one: Casadesus for Vitolo forward for midfielder. It didn’t make much difference and, 10 minutes later, Tayron arrived for Juan Carlos. But the switch didn’t light the fuse. Tenerife were awarded a free-kick in a good position, but it seemed a crazy decision to let defender Jorge take it… the ball was last seen heading for the moon! At the other end, Lugo were getting cocky, and Camille had to bale out his team mates twice, to avoid a second goal. The last Tenerife change was Montañes for defender Carlos Ruiz, which was another bold call. But when the new arrival flicked the ball off to Casadesus, he rounded a defender and then hit it over the bar. The defeat drops Tenerife to 10th spot. Let’s hope shooting practice has been the training ground mantra this week, before hosting Nastic tomorrow (Saturday) at 7pm.

Finals Night such a delight CAMP Nauta played host to the Darts League finals night, and what a fantastic competition it turned out to be.

First to the oche were Karen, Gio and Ann, from Pas O Nadas B, facing Loch-In B’s Lynn, Nikki and Marie in the Division 2 Ladies’ Trebles, the Los Abrigos girls coming home first. The next trophy was the Division 2 Men’s Trebles, featuring the Marilyn’s B, trio of Alex, Dave and Neil. And, in their first final, they took Legends’ Chris, Jim and Alan to the last game before conceding 2-1 in a close encounter. The clash of the heavyweights came next in the Division 1 Men’s Trebles, when Boothen’s Sam, Steve and Joe tackled Pas

O Nada A’s boys Richard, Walter and Andy. The match swung both ways before Boothen emerged victorious by the odd game in five. The Loch-In B team were represented by all four players in the Ladies’ Division 2 Doubles. But could Lynn and Nikki avenge their Trebles de-

feat by overcoming team colleagues Jackie H and Jackie F? The answer, unfortunately for them, was No, because the 3-1 scoreline gave the Jackies their first trophy together. Legends’ Chris and Alan were back in action, playing John Boy and Fudder, from Ourplace Breaka-

ways, in the Division 2 Men’s Doubles, with the Legends completing a 3-0 success. The Men’s Division 1 Doubles was a tasty affair, with Tom and Telf, from Scruffy Macs, playing rivals Rob and Tomo, from Spear Chuckers. Excellent darts were anticipated, and how they flew… until Scruffy’s claimed the silverware by a 3-1 margin. The final of the Division 2 Ladies’ Singles followed, and Gio, from Pas O Nadas B, and Loch-In B opponent Jackie, needed no introduction. In a match which was a privilege to score, Gio took the honours 2-1, and then produced a victory dance which would not have been out of place on Strictly Come Dancing! In the Division 2 Men’s Singles, Buzzin B’s Rob was drawn against two-

time winner Chris, from Legends, and the latter continued his good form in a 3-0 win. Mr Oasis Darts League himself, Phoenix Bar’s Mitch, was on the oche in the last match-up, the Division 1 Singles, against Loch-In A’s Wayne. And after some superb darts, Mitch took the trophy, thanks to his superior finishing. A big hand, please, for hosts Debbie and Ray for their amazing food and hospitality, for the organiser’s scorers, as well as all who helped to provide an excellent evening’s entertainment. You know who you are! I’m looking forward to presentation night already. A catch-up match was played on Sunday, when Loch-In B hosted Red Devils, and Luc’s visitors strolled to a 7-1 victory.

Women’s football

That sinking feeling…

ALARM bells were ringing after this defeat left Tenerife without a win from their opening four games, and the final whistle couldn’t come soon enough. It was a defensive nightmare for the shell-shocked team, as the pink tide breached their rearguard with ease. Tenerife’s Ana Gonzalez, dribbling the ball upfield in the opening minutes, should have laid it off to Maria Jose Perez on the left, before the move fizzled out. Ange Koko set up a hanging cross from the right, which Ana put over the bar, and it all looked sweet as Tenerife appeared to be settling nicely. But it didn’t last long! Alba pounced on a loose ball, and went on an unchallenged run that ended with a 10th-minute opener for the visitors. Ana might have equalised, but her shot popped back off the bar,

Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 0 Albacete 5

and the keeper thwarted Maria Jose’s rebound with her boot. There was more encouragement from the right wing, as Ivory Coast player Ange Koko showed she had the beating of the Albacete defence. But too often, when the ball was launched into the box, there was no white-shirted player attacking the ball, giving the defence time to clear. Back at the other end, Albacete won a free-kick,

and, when the ball came loose to Miriam Rodriguez, she was able to squeeze it into the goal from a tight angle. That sent Albacete into the break with a firm hold on the game, which forced a couple of Tenerife changes before the restart. Jackie Simpson and Cristina Martin-Prieto replaced Cindy Garcia and Eva Llamas, which helped for a while. Cristina added a stronger presence to the attack,

while Jackie was always willing to push up and add her height for set-pieces. In fact, Albacete keeper Elena was under some pressure as Tenerife forced a series of corners. But they needed to keep the backdoor closed. A smart move from the visitors turned defence into attack as Alba raced down the pitch and tucked the ball past keeper Noelia Gil for her second goal. Paloma Lazaro became the third Tenerife sub,

replacing Silvia Doblado, who had received a knock. But Albacete turned up the pressure and went in search of more goals. Miriam added a fourth strike as the home defence dithered, and completed her hat-trick when a loose ball wasn’t cleared. Tenerife’s suffering was complete when Ana Gonzalez, through on goal, was held back in the penalty area. But no spotkick materialised. Tenerife drop down to 13th place in the 16-team Spanish Premier League, with much to ponder.

CD Marino

Marino’s new challenge

COACH Toni Dumpierez will be looking for a positive reaction from CD Marino at home on Sunday, following last week’s 2-0 defeat at Gran Canaria side UD San Fernando, in San Mateo. That dropped the Blues down to 11th place in their Tercera Division group, and it’s into the unknown against Haria CF, the Sunday visitors at 12 noon. They are new to the division after winning promotion from the Preferente League. But the Lanzarote side are struggling in the relegation zone after seven games, so it’s a perfect opportunity for Marino to climb the table.

Basketball

Stars off to a flyer TENERIFE, faced with the tough task of improving on last season’s heroics, have made the best possible start by winning their first two games in Spain´s elite Liga Endesa. The launch pad was an 81-65 win at Burgos last Sunday. They took the first two quarters 19-16 and 19-10, shared a 19-19 third, and finished with a 2420 sign-off. American Mike Tobey is already showing his worth to the team, his 15 points leading the way in a solid team effort. And captain Nico Richotti was close behind with 11 points. Just as pleasing as the win was the return to action of Madrid-born Javier Beiran, who was out for 10 months with injury. Wednesday night brought a tougher fight, this time at home against UCAM Murcia. But with spirit and determination, Tenerife ran out 84-78 winners.

Another new boy grabbed the limelight this time, Polish signing Mateusz Ponitka scoring nine points, and impressing with his all-round contribution to the team. Mike Tobey equalled him with the same total, and the scoring all down the roster was again strong. The quarter scores

were 21-17, 18-24, 20-23, and a storming home finish with 25-14. Tenerife have another tough home game on Sunday, at 5.30pm against Valencia at the Pabellón Santiago Martin, in La Laguna. Three wins on the trot, and pleasing the home fans, is their twin inspiration.
