Loro Parque chief dishes it out to his bitter critics
WOLFGANG Kiessling, owner and President of Loro Parque, has turned the tables on his detractors this week with an open letter, exposing their continuing bitterness about the arrival of Morgan, the female orca, in 2010, and at the park in general. Continued on Page 3

Tanker leaking sulphuric acid on TF-4
A TANKER, carrying the corrosive substance sulphuric acid, began leaking on the TF-4 southbound, near Santa Cruz refinery, on Tuesday morning.
Because the vehicle was carrying a potentially lethal liquid, a specific protocol was activated, and Santa Cruz Local Police warned drivers, via social media, to be cautious. Once the leak was under control, workers began cleaning up the road, and, to avoid risks, two TF-4 exit lanes were closed. Three hours later, everything was under control. But the tanker stayed on the hard shoulder until it could be removed, under strict security conditions.
Biker badly injured A MAN riding a motorbike was injured severely after colliding with a car in Granadilla last Sunday afternoon on the TF-636. Paramedics treated the 28-year-old, then had him airlifted by helicopter to Candelaria Hospital for further examination.
Albanians’ fake
passports
TWO Albanians, a 20-year-old woman and a minor of 17, were arrested by National Police while trying to travel to London from Lanzarote Airport, using fake passports. Airport staff detected them at the check-in desk and alerted the cops, who found them hidden in their luggage. The pair, charged with using false documents, were placed at the disposal of the competent Judicial Authority.

Kiessling’s in a protective mood Continued from Front Yet Mr Kiessling, who founded the park in 1972, and later the Loro Parque Foundacion, dedicated to environmental projects, in which he has since invested around 17 million euros. And he is renowned for being a great environmentalist and humanitarian. He employs the finest handlers and trainers for his animals and birds, yet he has been criticised harshly for accepting Morgan, to keep her alive. “Since her arrival, we have been the subject of criticism and defamation campaigns by some activist groups,” he says. “These minority organisations have no knowledge of Morgan’s actual situation, and I do not think that they have an honest interest in her welfare. They only use Morgan as a battering ram to defame and disclaim Loro Parque.” Mr Kiessling has received numerous awards for his environmental and speciesprotection commitment, as well as his entrepreneurial achievements, which is why the park has received some 42 million visitors since its inauguration. He has been named Spain’s Entrepreneur of the Year on many occasions, and this year he received the prestigious Global Humanitarian Award from American Humane, in recognition of his lifetime efforts to protect Nature and preserve its biodiversity. Mr Kiessling is the first person to receive this recognition from America’s first national humane
organisation. It was awarded after Loro Parque, in May, became the first European zoo to be Humane Certified. Loro Parque, now an internationally-renowned zoological park in the North of Tenerife, was named the World’s Best Zoo by Tripadvisor in August. The main reason for the anti-Loro Parque groups stems from the young orca, found dying on the Netherlands’ coast in 2010 and rescued by the Harderwijk Dolphinarium. She was just skin and bones, and, although no one believed she would survive the first night, they managed to feed and revive her. A year later, a Dutch court decided she should be moved to Loro Parque in Tenerife for her well-being. And on 23rd April, 2014, the Dutch State Council, the highest court of the Dutch Administrative Justice, confirmed the legality of the animal’s transfer there. Mr Kiessling is extremely proud of his park’s achievements and those
of his own, and saving Morgan’s life remains high on his list. That is why he is so angry about the behaviour of activist groups, which is probably why he felt compelled to write the following letter: We recently received a communication from Ms Tanja Breining, of PETA Germany, informing us that their signature campaign to release Morgan (started in June 2015) had reached 20,000 supporters. PETA Germany have been campaigning for years to release Morgan, even though they know she has a hearing defect, that her family group was never found, and that she probably never learned the necessary skills to hunt, or that she will never be able to use her sonar to detect any prey. It is evident that Morgan cannot be released because, if she returns to the sea, this would only lead to a slow, agonising death. Meanwhile, PETA Germany just makes campaigns. The
reality is that Morgan, who arrived at Loro Parque at the request of the Dutch authorities to avoid euthanasia, has found a true home under our care. This situation has led us to undertake some actions, and to request the support of our visitors by collecting signatures. In only two months (from June 30th to September 1st 2017), more than 75,000 visitors have given us their support, confirming with their signatures: “The animals of Loro Parque have a decent home, are well off, and are ambassadors of their wild species.” Each of these signatures represents invaluable support for the work of Loro Parque, and for Morgan to remain with her adoptive family, receiving the care that she needs. Along with this letter, we send you the notorised document, which certifies the existence and authenticity of the 75,000 signatures. It is important to point out that the collection campaign has been carried out in a short period of time. And if it had continued, we would, undoubtedly, exceed 300,000 signatures each year. The modern zoos, such as Loro Parque, are the only embassies for exotic animals, and they have the essential task of transmitting to the world population its beauty, and how important it is to conserve nature. In these difficult times for the animals, it is important that we change our sensitivity and find a way to co-exist in harmony with the rest of the living beings on our planet.

Rajoy spells the death knell for Catalonia independence PRIME Minister Mariano Rajoy announced on Wednesday that his Spanish Government had taken the first step towards suspending home rule in Catalonia.
Carles Puigdemont, the Catalan First Minister, has until 10am on Monday to reply to the formal notification about his unconstitutional, referendum actions on 1st October. If Puigdemont responds by stressing that Catalonia independence has not been declared, the process of suspending home rule in his region will not continue. But if his reply is anything but “a simple affirmative or negative”, or if he ignores the communication, he will be given a further three days, until 10am on Thursday (19th Oct), to revoke his independence declaration and return to the rule of law. This latest episode is a far cry from the blood, sweat, tears and cheers of the illegal Referendum Day, and of the overwhelming support for Puigdemont. That was displayed again by more than 350,000 pro-unity Catalans in Barcelona last Sunday. They waved Spanish flags and brought the city centre to a standstill, their banners stating: “Together we are better” and “Enough!
Let’s Recover Good Sense”. The Central Government’s eight-page document, explicit and specific to the application of Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, was faxed to Barcelona shortly before 4pm on Wednesday. Puigdemont must comply with his “constitutional and legal duties, and cease actions which are gravely contrary to the general interest of Spain”.
The message is repeated several times throughout the text, and Puigdemont, it says, has ignored the Constitutional Court repeatedly on matters relating to the Catalan referendum and independence process. His regional government has done so with “such intensity that non-compliance would mean a grave risk to the constitutional order”. The Central Government says it now has a duty
“to proceed to activate the application of the procedure to apply Article 155 of the Constitution”, if Puigdemont fails to confirm that the independence of Catalonia has not been declared. Spain, it adds, “does not foresee the unilateral secession of a part of its territory, because of the mere will of a minority in a regional parliament”. Despite repeated court orders, the Catalan Government has, says the document, “continued to avoid the action of justice as far as possible, and the situation is now a grave risk for democratic coexistence”. In addition, the Spanish Government accused Puigdemont of using “premeditated confusion” in his statement to the regional chamber on Tuesday. He appeared to announce a declaration of independence in the Catalan Parliament, before suspending it immediately. It left politicians, journalists and the general public wondering for several hours whether or not he wanted Catalonia independence right now. “If the actions of October 10, 2017 are considered by the First Minister of the Government of Catalonia to constitute a declaration of independence, current or not, the process to suspend home rule will continue,” says the document.
Man’s ravine
injuries
A MAN who fell several metres down a ravine by the TF-324 road on Tuesday, while working in La Orotava, was badly injured. Fire-fighters and Local Police helped paramedics to rescue him, and helped them carry the 45-year-old to an ambulance. He was taken to the University Hospital for treatment to the damage on his head and back.
Rubbish-bin
arsonist AN arsonist, who had a habit of setting fire to rubbish containers in La Laguna was arrested by Local Police in the early hours of Tuesday morning. A resident in Avenida de Los Menceyes saw him torching another container and called the emergency services. The Fire Brigade and Local Police were dispatched to the scene immediately and, thanks to the witness’s description, officers were able to find and arrest the arsonist as he walked calmly along a nearby street. Son cleared of mum’s death A SON with mental-health problems, arrested by police on suspicion of murdering his 65-year-old mother, has now been released. Homicide police cleared the man, aged 40, after establishing that the woman had fallen accidentally. She struck her head badly and died almost immediately, at her La Salud house in Santa Cruz.
More airline worries as French staff strike OVER 100,000 passengers were stranded following this week’s French air-traffic- control walk-out, as part of the country’s national strike over President Macron’s labour reforms. Ryanair cancelled 222 flights, of which 50% were to Spain, including 24 to Alicante and 16 each to Mallorca and Barcelona during the upheaval, from Monday evening until the early hours of Wednesday. Prior to the strike, a Ryanair spokesman said: “President Macron’s government has announced a major transformation of French labour laws. But it appears that nothing changes when it comes to air-traffic-control disrup-
tion, and unions holding Europe to ransom.” Pressure group Airlines For Europe (A4E), Europe’s largest airline association, has estimated that seven out of 10 air-trafficcontrol strikes since 2005 had been staged by French staff. Thomas Reynaert, A4E Managing Director, said: “The impact of this current strike in France was quite significant because airlines were forced to reduce their flight programme by a third.” The majority of the French air-traffic staff joined a call to arms by unions for the country’s 5.4 million public-service workers to support a general strike. The Civil Aviation Authority in France asked its airlines to reduce their flight schedules into the country by 30% on Tuesday, but the action
also impacted on aircraft flying over French airspace to Spain. EasyJet said: “A large percentage of our flights go over France, and we know this has had an impact on our flights to and from French airports, as well as those flying over French airspace. “Just like other airlines, we are subject to French air-traffic regulations, so we expected delays and cancellations on both days.” A Jet2 spokesperson said: “We were made aware of industrial action, supported by the French air-traffic services. And, while some delays were experienced, we worked constantly to bring forward any delayed departures, and get flights underway at the earliest possible opportunity.” Meanwhile, A4E has
called for new measures to minimise the effect of French air-traffic-control strike action on travellers. Reynaert, said: “European and French policy-makers need to implement measures capable of minimising Air Traffic Management disruption’s impact on travellers. “More than 250 strike days since 2004 are enough; we cannot allow these wellpaid, air-traffic controllers to restrict the rights of millions of European passengers.” Reynaert added: “Enough is enough. If the French Government are serious about changing France, they should start by tackling these air-traffic control unions. “And, together with the European Commission, they should take action to prevent thousands of European consumers from
having their travel plans disrupted by a tiny group of ATC unions going on strike. “They cannot stand by, idly, as more disruption and travel misery is inflicted upon Europe’s consumers and airlines.” Ryanair and other airlines have, repeatedly, called on the commission to introduce measures to alleviate the impact of these frequent air-trafficcontrol strikes. They include: *French air-traffic-control unions to engage in binding arbitration instead of strikes *Allowing Europe’s other controllers to operate flights over France during strikes *Protecting flights over France under minimumservice obligations during French air-traffic-control strikes

In the Pink, for one special day INTERNATIONAL Breast Cancer Day takes place on Thursday (19th Oct), and there is an island-wide campaign to “Turn Tenerife Pink”. The details were announced last Friday, at a meeting hosted by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, along with Guido Gianoli, (Asociación Benéfica Italo-Canaria ABIC President), Santiago del Teide Mayor Emilio Navarro, Arona Social Services Councillor, Elena Cabello Moya, Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo and Ámate President Marie Carmen Bonfante. And the audience also comprised people from cancer associations AECC, and the Walk for Life, CEST, and other participating institutions. The idea is to raise breast-cancer awareness among the general population with an explosion of
pink bows all over Tenerife, on trees, buildings, homes and balconies… anywhere, in fact! Nearly every borough is now involved, and campaign organisers also want the general public to get involved by wearing a pink ribbon or display on Thursday. “Early detection and investigation are also an important part of this
campaign” said the Adeje Mayor. “We all have, or have had, at least one woman in our lives with breast cancer, which is now affecting an increasing number of younger women, and also men.” The campaign will also encourage men and women to begin regular self-examinations to detect lumps, or any changes in their breast zone, and
The answers to those vital Brexit questions TIM Hemmings, the British Embassy’s Deputy Head of Mission, is hosting a Brexit meeting for the public on Wednesday (18th Oct) in Adeje’s Cultural Centre at Noon. Are you a British resident here in Adeje, or anywhere in South Tenerife, and are you confused by Brexit? This could be your chance to ask those vital questions that never seem to be answered by politicians. The event is open to all members of the public, residents, holidaymakers and visitors alike Charmaine Arbouin, Consul for the Canary Islands, and Helen Keating, Tenerife Vice-Consul and permanent representative, will also be in attendance. Adeje Institutional Relations Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares will open the meeting by introducing the panel and outlining the programme. Pension stability, health-care availability and retirement rights, plus job and residential security, are just some of the concerns voiced on a regular basis by residents. The meeting takes place at the Cultural Centre’s Aula Magna,
second floor, where Mr Hemmings and the team will address questions from British residents and visitors. Many of them own property here, or live here for up to six months of the year, and they want to know how their rights might be affected. No registration is needed, but seating will be limited, so get there early.
facilitate early treatment. Guido Gianoli, who is spearheading the campaign, says there will be over 15,000 pink ribbons on trees all over the island of Tenerife on the day. “Breast cancer knows no frontiers, colour, race or religion,” he said, while Ámate President Maria del Carmen Bonfante said that she could personally
confirm that early detection saved lives. She also thanked Guido, the councils and all those contributing to the campaign for their work and commitment. The initiative also has the support of many private institutions, including the Rotary Club, CaixaBank, CEST, Anima Tenerife, and Vive Tenerife.

Bull-run man killed
A MAN died during the annual Fiesta del Toro Revolao bull run in Valfermoso de Tajuna, a small village in Spain’s Castilla La Mancha region. The Madrid citizen had been taunting the bull by waving a jumper, before it charged the 33-year-old, pinning him to the ground.
Other participants attempted to pull the bull away by its tail, which led to two more people being injured. The man is believed to have been gored in the jugular, but died later, despite close attention by the emergency services. His wife and children witnessed the tragedy.
Teenager caused blaze A YOUNG Russian man has been arrested, following the La Concha wildfire which destroyed 5.9 hectares of scrub and woodland between Ojen and Marbella. The alarm was raised late on Saturday evening, with at least 400 calls made to the 112 emergency coordination centre. More than 50 specialist
firefighters, together with six aircraft from INFOCA, brought the blaze under control on Sunday. But it caused the closure of the MA-5300 road in both directions for four hours. Police sources say the 19-year-old lit a bonfire after becoming lost during an excursion to the mountains.
Home-fire victim
A MAN, aged 63, suffered smoke inhalation when a fire broke out at 2am in his home on La Carretera del Rosario, in Miramar, Santa Cruz. The blaze started on the fourth floor of his building, and fire-fighters
extinguished the blaze and ventilated the affected properties. Meanwhile, paramedics attended to the man, then took him to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment.

A MAGNITUDE 4 earthquake, registered in South Tenerife on the Richter Scale by the National Geographic Institute (IGN) at 6.38am on Tuesday, was felt by many residents.
It occurred at a depth of 25km in the Atlantic, affecting Las Zocas and Las Chafiras, Los Cristianos, Valle San Lorenzo, El Fraile, La Camella, Costa del Silencio, Cabo Blanco, Buzanada, Guía de Isora, Granadilla and Adeje. But emergency services received just five calls from residents in Adeje, Arona and San Miguel. One Silencio woman, who was awoken when her lounge mirrors began rattling, said: “I was really frightened at first,
but my husband guessed it was a tremor. He had experienced one earlier this year during the day.” The Canarian Volcanological Institute (Involcan) is conducting more studies into the tremor for further information. Around 17 hours later an earthquake, measuring 2.8 on the Richter Scale, was registered in the northwest of Gran Canaria at midnight. The IGN said the population of Agaete and El Agazal would have felt the tremor. In the last few days, Involcan has intensified its control over the Cumbre Vieja volcano in La Palma, which registered more than 150 earthquakes in under 48 hours. Southern Spain has registered nine earthquakes in just 24 hours in Andalucia, the initial tremor centred on the Sevilla town of El Saucejo. It had a magnitude of
4.2 on the Richter scale, according to National Geographic Institute (IGN) and the epicentre was detected at a depth of 11km. Several smaller aftershocks followed, with magnitudes ranging between 1.5-2.8, at depths between 11 and 12 kilometres. But there are no reports of injuries or damage. The seismic activity comes in the same week that Malaga province was hit by four small earthquakes in less than 24 hours, in the villages of Campillos, Colmenar and Teba. Each year, between 1,200 and 1,400 tremors are recorded in the Iberian peninsula. The last deadly quake in Spain was in May 2011, when 11 people died and more than 400 were injured. The tragedies happened when two 5.4 and 4.5 tremors caused extensive damage in the Lorca town of Murcia.

What has changed?
Basically, you have more choice with what to do with the money you save in your pension. From age 55 you will now be able to access all the money which is in your pension pot. Before the changes were made you were limited to what you could take out each year.
Your Pension Pot Take your money as cash
Income payments as and when you want them
Guaranteed income for life
You can do this in one go or as a series of smaller amounts
Flexi-access drawdown
An annuity can secure regular income for the rest of your life
Or Any combination of the above options You don’t have to do anything with your pension pot now. You can leave it invested until you need it. And it’s at that point you can see which of the options available to you that will best suit your circumstances. It’s important you fully understand all the options and the different tax implications they have. Sebastian & St James will be able to help you with this and give you advise which suits your own needs.
Building your pension pot
You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have:
• You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commitments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot.
Do you know you get tax relief on payments you make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot.

Put levy on flight fares for stranded travellers
THE Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) believes air fares should rise to fund the full repatriation of passengers in the event of an airline collapse. Monarch Airlines went into administration on 2nd October, when nearly 2,000 employees lost their jobs. ABTA’s concern comes after the UK Government’s announcement that all 110,000 passengers with
Monarch Airline tickets up to Sunday (15th Oct) would be returned to the UK, freeof-charge. It has been hailed as the UK’s biggest peacetime repatriation. But customers abroad, scheduled to fly back to the UK after Sunday, must make their own arrangements, unless they are ATOL protected. Travel-trade group ABTA suggests that all plane tickets should be subject to a levy. Chief executive Mark Tanzer, said: “The Monarch collapse has shown that consumer protection in travel is not understood,
and there’s a gaping hole at its centre.” Mr Tanzer said the association was not consulted about the airlift, calling the exercise “completely unsatisfactory”. He added: “It sets a precedent for next time there’s an airline failure. Either the Government sticks to the principle that ‘you’re unprotected; you’re on your own’, or it adopts the principle that everyone has to be brought back.” If it’s the latter, “there has to be a fighting fund, based on a levy on all flights”, he stressed.
Huge cocaine bust, by Cops and Customs
THE Guardia Civil and National Police, along with Customs officials, have snuffed out a huge international drug operation, adding up to 3,800kg of cocaine, worth an estimated 220m euros. The bust followed a tipoff from international investigators, and the authorities intercepted a tug-boat while it was crossing the Atlantic, around 540 miles from the Canary Islands. The vessel was towed into the Spanish port of Cadiz, where police arrested the seven-man crew. Officers found over 160 individual packets of the drug, each weighing around 23kg, stashed away in a watertight compartment under the boat’s kitchen. It is the second major international drug-bust in the Atlantic recently, following the Portuguese navy’s ambush of a yacht, believed to be transporting cocaine to Europe from the Caribbean.
Couple target a marathon swim CRISTINA Ibáñez and Alberto Moreno, from Adeje, will set off tomorrow (Saturday) from La Gomera to attempt the first male/female open-sea crossing without a wet suit, or any flotation devices.
The swim has previously been achieved by professionals, such as opensea world champion David Mecca. The couple, also hoping to make the Guinness Book of World Records, set off at 4.30am yesterday
(Thursday) from La Cueva beach, in La Gomera capital San Sebastián. They are expected to arrive at Adeje’s La Caleta tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm. They are both professionals in related fields: Alberto is a swimming coach and Cristina a marine biologist. In addition, they are “big fans of the sea and sea sports”, usually taking part in non-competitive, opensea swimming. Cristina and Alberto hope their efforts will help emphasise the importance of “caring for our natural and cultural resources”. Throughout the marathon swim, the couple will be monitored by maritime protection crews.

Mums can’t always get custody of kids JOINT custody of children, through divorce or separation, has risen to nearly three in 10 families in Spain, with mothers’ sole custody dropping from 70% to 66% in the last year. A decade ago, just 2% of children lived half their time with each parent, compared
with a quarter of them a year ago. And that figure has since increased to nearly 29%. The National Institute of Statistics (INE) in its Annulments, Separations and Divorces (Nulidades, Separaciones y Divorcios) section, reports that 43% of married couples, who split up last year, had dependent children. It was a similar figure to that of 2015, and, in the main, the mother was given custody. But these
cases are shrinking: in the last 12 months, parents sharing 50-50 custody went up from 13,074 to 14,594, even though the number of marriages with dependent children, which broke up, was
about the same. Fathers were given sole custody in 5.1% of cases in 2016, having risen from the 5% of 2015. The Spanish Family Solicitors’ Association (AEAFA) says regional governments are tending to favour 5050 custody above any other arrangement, except when it is clearly not in the child’s best interests. Socially, joint custody is becoming more the accepted norm, says AEAFA spokesman José Gabriel Ortolá, since, usually, “both parents work and have to fit their jobs and child-care around each other”. He added: “Most shared-custody arrangements are reached by mutual request and agreement from the start.” But the Association of Female Jurors, THEMIS, believes the rise in joint custody is down to a “relaxing
in suitability criteria” on the part of the Supreme Court and, by definition, family courts lower down the hierarchy. “Circumstances are getting more and more lax,” said THEMIS chairwoman Amalia Fernández Doyagüe. “It’s enough for both parents to have the legal capacity and skills required to bring up a child. “Having the ‘ability’ or ‘legal capacity’ should not be enough; judges should still be taking into account who is going to be caring for the child and how, and should ask the children their opinion. “They should also review cases regularly; for example, every six months or so, at least at first, to evaluate how alternating between homes is influencing the child’s welfare.” Uncontested divorces, of which there were 12,305 in Spain last year, according to the
INE, are, unsurprisingly, where 50-50 custody is most likely to be agreed at the outset, as opposed to contested divorces, of which 2,072 were registered in 2016. The pattern was also seen with contested and uncontested separations, which numbered 61 and 516 respectively. Fewer couples are divorcing or separating, says the INE, and, while divorces went up by 0.3%, separations went down by 6.4% last year. In nearly two-thirds of cases, the decision to split up was a joint one, although, in 22% of heterosexual marriages, the wife wanted to leave, and in 12%, the husband. The average couple filing for divorce had been married around 16 years, while separations not ending in legal dissolution, typically, came after 21 years of being wed.
No wonder full-time contracts are golden
UNDER 10% of temporary workers in Spain are ever offered permanent contracts, which, reveals a study by Eurostat, makes Spain the worst of all 28 EU countries. In the UK, over 55 of its temporary workers find fulltime work, which is the second-highest conversion rate after
Latvia, on 56.8%. They are followed by Romania and Austria, on 51.9% and 47.6% respectively. The figures also reveal that more than 25% of Spain’s workers are on temporary contracts. And getting out of the “temporary-work” trap is becoming increasingly difficult. A year before the 2008 recession began, the average temporary contract lasted 79.1 days. Last year it dropped to 50.6, growing slight-
ly in the first eight months of this year to 51.1 days. In addition, salaries for temporary employment continue to be far lower than those of permanent workers. In 2015, the average annual salary of a permanent employee was 24,562 euros, compared with the temporary worker’s average of 16,442 euros. It’s hardly any wonder that temporary contracts are far more appealing to employers in Spain!

False attacks show cops in a bad light
FAKE videos and images of the Catalan referendum have emerged on social media, depicting the Spanish Government’s combined police defence forces unfavourably during the independent campaign. One photograph of a man with blood gushing down his face was said to have been taken on referendum day. But it was actually from a 2012 mining demonstration.
Another photo showing an injured child was from an attack in Tarragona, on the Costa Dorada, in the same year. Police were also depicted attacking a wheelchairbound man in a photograph from a 2011 anti-austerity movement.
Clearer pictures also show that it was actually a man behind the disabled person being set upon. Another protest against austerity, in 2013, showed firemen cornered by batonwielding police. But it was used in an attempt to portray the Cataluña discord during the referendum vote. In yet another photograph, a group of civilians were seen struggling against Guardia Civil officers, while, apparently, raising a Catalonian flag above their heads. But, as you can see from the inset, the flag was actually superimposed.
Rental scammer hits on a pregant woman A SELF-confessed scammer has fled to Gibraltar from Spain with a pregnant woman’s rental deposit, leaving her facing homelessness, along with her partner.
Londoner Karim Moumene, 27, is alleged to have run off with 2,300 euros in cash after advertising a flat he didn’t own. He left 26-year-old Irish expat Hannah Nolan, and her partner, 800 euros out of pocket over the Barcelona property. Hannah (pictured), a teacher in Barcelona who is five months’ pregnant, realised she and her partner had been conned when an estate agent demanded they leave. She said they ended up trying to break down the door, accusing them of squatting and telling them
to move out immediately. “Karim is outrageous,” she said. “He seemed so charming, but he conned us. We wanted to find a place together for the remainder of my pregnancy, before I returned to Ireland to have the baby. “It has been very stressful. We’re both young, we don’t have a lot of spare income, and it is almost impossible to find a room in Barcelona for a couple.” She has reported the theft to Barcelona police, and
continues to pressurise Moumene into returning the money. Hannah has even contacted his family, and has launched a social-media campaign against him. She has now tracked him down to Gibraltar, through his friends, and discovered he has been drinking in popular Main Street pub the Horseshoe, in recent weeks. This week, astonishingly, Moumene emailed Hannah asking for forgiveness. It came after she wrote to his mother in England, insisting she put pressure on her son. He wrote that he was sorry for conning her, and that she had “every right to be livid” with him. Another young couple lost 900 euros after Moumene, allegedly, pocketed their rental deposit, via an advert he placed on Idealista.com. But it is not known how many other people he has ripped off.

A HIKER from Norway died after plunging seven metres down the Barranco de Masca. Emergency services dispatched a helicopter to the scene in an attempt to rescue the 57-year-old woman. But once it landed at Adeje Fire Station, paramedics could only confirm the woman’s death, through severe injuries.
He’s not that healthy!
A MAN, seemingly with good health habits, was arrested by border-control Guardia Civil officers while carrying a tub of sports protein powder at Lanzarote airport. The 39-year-old, flying in from Madrid, aroused suspicion because he looked so nervous. And no wonder, because he’d actually packed cocaine into the tub. The plastic tub, containing sports protein powder, supposedly, weighed 1.5gms, according to the info on it, but it pushed the scales up to 4.288gms. Officers performed a substance test, which came back positive for cocaine, which is when the man confessed. He was arrested, charged with drug-smuggling and sent to prison, provisionally, by Arrecife courts.

Millions of fake pills are discovered in drug raids GUARDIA Civil officers have busted a huge drug-trafficking organisation, collecting more than 4½ million counterfeit pills, including Viagra, slimming aids and muscleenhancers, into the bargain.
The huge operation against drug-trafficking, co-ordinated by Interpol, has so far led to 62 arrests, and another 22 people are still being probed. Some 1,442 inspections in herbal stores, gyms, sex shops and pharmacies across Spain unearthed 56,185 fake Viagra pills, 4,205,491 muscleenhancers, 55,428 psychostimulants, 86,970 slimming tablets… and more. Meanwhile, the distribution of counterfeit and illegal drugs on the Internet has also seen a crackdown, with inspections being intensified at unauthorised distribution points. The Guardia developed the operation with the
Customs Administration, the Ministry of Health, the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Sanitary Products (AEMPS), the Spanish Agency for Protection of Health in Sport (AEPSAD) and the Departments of Health and Pharmacy Inspections throughout the country. Cops want to combat the illegal phenomenon of advertising, selling and supplying medicines and drugs, in particular those falsified or not licensed. The propaganda, sale and supply of medicines outside authorised channels is
becoming a global criminal activity, posing a health risk, and, in many cases, is linked to trans-national, organised crime. The so-called PANGEA Operation was initiated in 2008 by the World Health Organisation to combat these irregular activities. It has been developed annually in more countries, and with the collaboration of the World Customs Organisation and the Permanent Forum on International Pharmacological Crimes, along with other international organisations. A total of 15,929 inspections
were carried out at airports or ports as follows: *14,812 in Madrid-Barajas *349 in El Prat de Barcelona *186 in Alicante *170 in Bilbao *412 in the Port of Algeciras As in previous editions of PANGEA, Asia is the main area of the shipments’ origin. Among the most prominent countries are China (54.64%), India (40.17%) and Thailand (1.09%), plus other countries with smaller percentages, such as the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Principality of Andorra, Panama, Algeria and Turkey.

I’ll open my grave to prove I am not dead! IT’S hard to believe, but Juana Escudero Lezcano, a 53-yearold woman from Alcalá de Guadaíra, near Seville, in the south of Spain, has been struggling to come to terms with the fact that, officially, she is dead. She is unable to carry out simple tasks, such as renewing her driving licence and visiting a doctor, and all because various administrative offices believe she is dead. Details of a woman buried in a Málaga cemetery match those of Juana exactly, including her full name and date of birth. And this astonishing coincidence has not only caused their Social Security data to clash, but has, subsequently, seen her registered as deceased. “Perhaps I’ll open the grave to prove I’m not dead,” she said after a doctor first informed Juana of her “death” when she visited an emergency room. Her daughter, Marta, said: “He looked at her, not knowing how to break the news, and told her that, according to Social Security records, she was deceased. But the family have not seen the funny side of this story for a long time now.” Juana told a Spanish newspaper about the moment she found out, saying: “When the doctor put my name in the
computer, I appeared as dead! She turned the screen for me to see. Dead! “But she still treated me because she knew me and knew that my situation was urgent. She told me that we would take care of it later.” Juana’s mistaken identity has left her with major problems, such getting a driving licence and even collecting her widow’s benefits. Initially, she felt it was merely a computer error and could be remedied in a few days. She later learned, though, that not only was she dead, but also that she was buried in the Malaga cemetery. Once she recovered, she went to Social Security to clear up the misunderstanding. “There, they explained to me that someone probably made a typo, or maybe it was a computer error,” said Juana. “But we went to the Treasury, to the courts… but everywhere, I appeared as deceased.” She has “suffered for more than six years,” since 13th
May, 2010, when she was first registered as deceased. The publication of her “death” in the state’s official gazette has been one of her biggest headaches. A case is published in an official gazette when a person’s relatives cannot be contacted. In the case of the other Juana, officials were looking for her family to inform them that they had to evict the body from the tomb, because the family had not paid the maintenance fee. Marta recalled: “That day (in April 2016), we called Malaga City Council and they told us that since my mother was buried there and we had not paid the fee, the tomb had been emptied after the legal period and the bones deposited in an ossuary. “That is a chest or box, which serves as the final resting place of human skeletal remains, when burial space is scarce. “What I had to tell them was difficult, because I had my mother in front of me and I was talking to her,”
said Juana’s bewildered daughter. Since the family had not paid, the remains of the other Juana were exhumed and now rest in the Malaga ossuary. After years of dealing with the problem, and, having made the case public last May, Juana has appealed to the justice system. She has filed a petition before a Malaga court to claim that her information has been mixed up with the other person called Juana. “I want to be told who the person was that I was confused with, and who, exactly, was buried in that grave,” said Juana. “And I want all the information they have because I don’t know anything.” She has even offered herself for DNA testing “or whatever it takes” to remedy the problem, adding: “I imagine there will be medical tests we can do.” More than a year ago, she went to the cemetery, where she was told: “They have orders to do
nothing about this case.” So far, according to her account, the only explanation she has received is that, in the grave, there was a person with the same Christian name, surname, and date of birth. In 2011, her husband died and she needed a certification of life to receive her widow’s benefits. She also needed that certification to renew her driving licence the following year. According to Juana, the place she was treated worst was at the Treasury, where, according to her testimony, they said she could be sanctioned for identity theft. “On top of killing me, they fine me, without hearing my story,” she said. Yet she continues to pay her loans, mortgage, and lifeinsurance regularly. She added, comically: “I’m dead to everyone, except my bank! On the government’s computers I am dead, but as far as the bank is concerned, I am alive and kicking.” Juana believes she has been confused with a sister with whom she has no contact, and whose whereabouts she does not know. But she has no relatives whatsoever in Malaga province, and is certainly not related to anyone who could match the data of the person buried. Perhaps the bank can do her the biggest favour of all by testifying that she’s paying all her bills every month!
Murdered man’s girls sue social-media firms THE daughters of a Californian man killed in the terror attack on Las Ramblas, Barcelona, have filed a law suit against three social-media firms “for aiding, abetting and knowingly providing support and resources” to a terror group. Jared Tucker was one of 13 people who died when a van ploughed into pedestrians on the crowded street, leaving another 130 injured. He and his wife, Heidi Nunes-Tucker, were celebrating their first anniversary with a European vacation when he was killed. His three daughters have now filed a lawsuit against Twitter, Google and Facebook, claiming the firms “knowingly and recklessly provided ISIS with accounts”. It has been filed by lawyers in the US District Court in Northern California, seeking a trial by jury and asking for damages. The New York Post says the daughters are being represented by Danelle Sinclair, their mother and legal guardian. And she claims the firms “have, for years, knowingly and recklessly provided the terrorist group ISIS with accounts to use its social networks as a tool for spreading extremist propaganda, raising funds and attracting new recruits.’

Self-taught, ‘Dark Web’ arms dealer is arrested ONE of the largest dealers in black-market weapons has been arrested by police in Spain’s northern province of Navarra. The 24-year-old, who has no qualifications or trade experience, taught himself how to navigate the blackmarket-dominated “Dark Web” and to manufacture weapons, which he then sold on for a hefty profit. The weapons came from Slovakia, the same place that supplied arms in the 2015 Paris attacks. Some weapons were sent to the UK, where they were seized, as well as to Germany, where a man shot himself the same day he received the guns. The unnamed Spaniard, who is in custody, had an enviable lifestyle, even buying a yacht, and mooring it in a Barcelona marina. During raids on several of his properties, officers seized 22 small firearms, several handmade weapons, a kilo of gunpowder and more than 1,500 euros in cash. The wealthy young arms dealer sold his goods to the UK, Spain, Germany, the
US and Asia, and accepted payment only in bitcoins, the virtual currency. He travelled between his home-town Navarra and a Barcelona flat to do business, and had constructed a gun-manufacturing workshop in a garage owned by one of his elderly neighbours. Since his arrest, Interpol have brought down several of his buyers, some with a history of murder. These arrests, said investigators working on the case, “dealt
one of the biggest blows to this kind of illegal activity on the international level”. This latest success comes after Spanish police revealed that 20% of the firearms seized in the past five years had been weapons of war. In January, the police, with help from Interpol, confiscated over 10,000 of these weapons, including assault rifles, antiaircraft machine guns and grenades, from sites in Girona, Bizcay and Cantabria.
Obsessed Guardia officer poisoned colleague’s food A GUARDIA Civil officer, accused of poisoning a female colleague and her family, could be jailed for 30 years if convicted. Both he and the woman were stationed at the Guardia’s Villajoyosa headquarters, on Alicante’s Costa Bravo. And according to the Public Prosecution department, the Brigada (equivalent to a Warrant Officer) was obsessed with her. They had known each other since 2010, when the woman was posted
to Villajoyosa. And after she was assigned to Citizens’ Attention in 2011, he was her immediate superior. Until 2016, when the Brigada was promoted and posted elsewhere, both lived in apartments attached to the Villajoyosa headquarters. He is said to have stalked her for three years, and sneaked into her apartment to steal possessions, including her underwear and intimate photos, stored on a pen drive. The obsession took a different direction in 2016, the Public Prosecutor claimed, when the Brigada entered the woman’s home and began
adding insecticide to food she had prepared for her husband and threeyear-old child. The woman, noticing for some time that the family’s food tasted and smelt unpleasant, installed a homesecurity camera. It filmed her superior entering the apartment and adding something to the food, which, analysis revealed, was insecticide. The Public Prosecutor recommended that the Brigada stand trial on three counts of attempted murder, breaking-and- entering, and invasion of the woman officer’s privacy.

GBP/EUR recovers By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks.
Although Sterling was one of the currency winners of September, GBP/EUR sustained a run of losses at the start of October. The pairing slumped from 1.1356 euros to 1.1122, but has since pushed back above the 1.12 level. EUR/GBP, meanwhile, has spent the last week climbing from £0.8805 to £0.8991, while EUR/USD has been fluctuating between $1.1816 and $1.16855. Although the euro came under pressure following the German election (with Chancellor Angela Merkel being forced into coalition
negotiations, after her party experienced its worst result since 1949), the common currency still beat the euro into submission, as autumn began in earnest. The pound weakened across the board, following the publication of less-than-impressive UK manufacturing and construction PMIs. The surprising contraction in construction was particularly concerning, and added to concerns that the UK’s growth outlook dimmed in the third quarter. Sterling’s slide to a threeweek low against the euro was also the result of political concerns, amid speculation that Prime Minister Theresa May could be ousted from her position, following an issue-laden speech at the Conservative Party Conference. GBP/EUR losses, while notable, were slightly limited by the uncertainty inspired by Catalonia’s recent independence referendum. Catalonia breaking away from the rest of Spain could have serious repercussions for the nation, and the Eurozone as a whole. The euro’s performance against the US dollar was also less impressive than
against its British peer, thanks to rising bets that the Federal Reserve will follow through on plans to increase interest rates once more in 2017. The situation in Catalonia will remain a hot topic in the weeks ahead, with further unrest potentially undermining demand for the euro. GBP/EUR investors will also be paying close attention to the fifth round of Brexit negotiations, which kicked off this week. According to recent reports, PM Theresa
May is demanding flexibility from both sides, but the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier asserted: “There is a clear sequencing to these talks. “There has been, so far, no solution found on step one, which is the divorce proceedings, so the ball is entirely in the UK court for the rest to happen.” Meanwhile, the euro could be pressured lower, if US data continues supporting the argument in favour of a rate-hike in December.

Drugs gang make Holiday woman had the such a meal of it ‘world on her shoulders’ A CRIMINAL gang involved in international drug-trafficking have been cleaned out, following a joint operation by Spanish police and the tax agency.
During the investigation, officers who intercepted a lorry found cannabis, stashed between boxes of fruit and vegetables. Eventually, 51 gang members were arrested for drugtrafficking, money-laundering, bribery and illegal possession of weapons, as well as forging documents. During their probe, police seized over 270kg of highquality marijuana, 46 highend vehicles, a lorry and nearly 500,000 euros in cash. The vehicles were,
reportedly, bought by the gang as a means to legalise their drug profits and launder the money coming in. Authorities, who raided over 23 homes throughout the Granada province during the operation, were able to track down and arrest all the gang members. The ringleaders were, said police, based in the city of Alhendin, and were all family members. Their crime ring, involved in several international drug-trafficking plots, also ran operations in other European countries. The gang leaders were believed to have concealed bundles of cannabis among food or appliances in trucks, to smuggle them across borders.
Thief ’s local haul THE Guardia Civil have arrested a 26-year-old man, suspected of several robberies in San Isidro… and all on the same day! Initially, he stole a computer and a camera from an office, and then pocketed 330 euros in cash, a mobile
phone and credit cards from a house in the same area. Officers gathered enough evidence to link both robberies to the suspect, who was also seen by a witness stealing from two cars.
A YOUNG pharmacist killed herself during a romantic Tenerife holiday with her boyfriend, after telling him she would meet him for dinner, an inquest heard.
Victoria Smith, 25, who had been prescribed antidepressants, was found hanged from a jetty on 28th March. She had complained in previous months that she had “the world on her shoulders”. Victoria, from Leyland, Lancashire, had recently sold her horse so she could purchase a house and settle down with boyfriend Matt Arkwright, 31. She became upset after selling the horse, he told the inquest, but she was also unhappy at work and was set to take up a new job at a hospital. She was last seen alive by Matt, a cycle-shop manager, as she read by their holiday hotel pool. She told him she would
meet him at dinner. During her Preston inquest, a coroner branded mental illness as “one of the greatest demons of our time” after hearing how she killed herself. Coroner James Newman recorded a conclusion of suicide, adding: “Victoria was a young woman who, evidently, had every opportunity to make a wonderful life. She had been about to start a new job in April, and her future appeared to have been incredibly bright. “But mental illness is one
of the greatest demons of our time. It is such a waste of a very young and promising life.” The hearing was told that Victoria was a “bright and bubbly” young woman, who’d had “ups and downs” over the years. She had moved to Wales to work on a farm, and returned to Preston for a job at an Ashton-onRibble pharmacy. But she found dealing with customers difficult and accepted another job at Royal Preston Hospital. Her father and mother, Alan and Linda Smith, said in a statement: “The relationship with Matt was blossoming and they were moving in together and enjoying themselves. “Vicky had talked about coming off the antidepressants. We asked if that were sensible, and she said that she had been forgetting to take them a lot of the time anyway. Mr Arkwright said: “We bought the house together and she was very excited. She wanted to put her own stamp on it.”

H Is For Hawk: A New Chapter Thursday 19 October, BBC2, 21.00
A decade ago, Helen Macdonald’s father, Alisdair Macdonald, one of Britain’s best photojournalists, died of a heart attack. In the grief-filled months that followed she began to dream of hawks. The story of how she bought and trained her goshawk, Mabel, in an attempt to deal with her grief, became a bestselling book, H Is For Hawk. Now, ten years since her father died, and five since her beloved Mabel’s death, Helen is returning to the world of goshawks once more. “This is the raging wild challenge of my future,” she says of the new hawk that she will train. “A hawk that won’t be a solution to grief, but my wings to somewhere new.” Goshawks are, to Helen, the most beautiful thing the world has ever made. But very few people are lucky enough to see them in the wild. One of the handful of times Helen had ever seen one was a spring morning a few weeks before her father’s death. Now, as she waits for the chick she’ll train to hatch in an aviary, she sets out into the forest to find goshawks in the wild again. Years before, she’d visited these forests with Rob, a friend of a friend and her wild goshawk guru, and now she asks him to help her find a wild goshawk nest that she can watch over the upcoming spring and summer. The nest Rob finds is just one of the signs that wild goshawks are breeding in Britain again after over a century of extinction. Their presence is a reminder of how, in the 1960s and 70s, British falconers realised that for the cost of importing one European goshawk for falconry, they could also import another and release it into the wild. Falconers brought British wild goshawks back to life.

In episode one, Ray heads west to dive on Ningaloo reef. This is the longest fringing coral reef in the world, and is visible from outer space. And the reef isn’t the only giant in these waters. Ray has a friendly encounter with a massive whale shark, the world’s biggest fish. Not as big though as a megalodon - an ancient shark the size of two double-decker buses, whose fossilized teeth Ray finds in the cliffs near the reef. Also in the series, Ray visits the Flinders mountains in the south where he takes to the skies in a helicopter to watch Australia’s largest bird of prey soar over emus and kangaroos. These great birds have been known to drive kangaroos over cliffs! He overnights on top of the range in an outback camp. Walpole Forest is a six million year old wooded wilderness in Western Australia. Ray is on the trail of the quokka, one of the continent’s shyest marsupials. But the highlight here for woodsman Ray is meeting aboriginal tribesman Joey Williams, who shows him how to make a hunting spear from local wood and kangaroo sinew. Nitmiluk Gorge in the North is a complete contrast to the forest. Ray flies by helicopter over this vast stony desert, twice the size of London, which was old when dinosaurs roamed the earth. After coming across giant lizards and crocodiles near the Katharine River, the best bit for Ray is an encounter with 50,000 flying fox bats. Kakadu is a wilderness in Australia’s Northern Territory. Salt-water crocodiles are one of the world’s biggest and fiercest predator and Ray encounters plenty of them in Kakadu. The climax here for Ray is meeting up with tribes people from the Murrumburrah clan. They teach him how they farm the land with fire, clearing undergrowth and encouraging strong new plant growth. He goes on a trek with an aboriginal family to find wild food in the bush and waterways. Ray is moved by the important lessons to be learned here - that it is possible to live in partnership and harmony with the land, and not just exploit it.
Houston, the fourth largest city in the US, is widely considered to be the number one hub for human trafficking in North America. The US Department of Justice estimates that at least one in five of all the country’s victims are trafficked through the city, and most of these people will be forced to work in the sex industry. Louis spends time with American women working in the city’s illegal sex industry and explores the often complex dynamic between prostitute and pimp. He discovers a subculture that plays by rules that are morally challenging to most people, and seeks to understand what stops these women breaking free. Louis also embeds with law enforcement on undercover operations and meets Vice Division officers tasked with persuading the working women to speak out against their pimps.
Doc Martin
Wednesday 18th October, ITV1, 21.00 James is teething: nothing seems to be working, and nobody is getting any sleep. In desperation, Martin and Louisa agree to try Mel Hendy’s (Rosie Ede) suggestion of amber beads. They appear to be working, until James gets a bead stuck up his nose. Mrs Tishell seems to be having a delayed onset of mourning and is “speaking to” Clive. Bert tries to offer advice, which only leads to Mrs Tishell shutting the pharmacy, inconveniencing everyone. After receiving a large potential order of ‘Large Whisky’, Al tries to put together the still, with no luck. Al goes to Bert to ask for help, and Bert couldn’t be more relieved to see him, as things were getting very tricky with Caitlin (Angela Curran). But they will need to get Ruth’s approval to go ahead. Local artists, Lily (Linda Broughton) and Walter O’Donnell (Paul Copley) are preparing for an upcoming exhibition. Walter puts Morwenna on the guest list after he sees Martin for his eye infection. Since Mrs Tishell has closed the pharmacy, Morwenna offers to deliver Walter’s medication, but when she does, she finds a very ill Lily. Louisa persuades Martin to go and speak to Mrs Tishell. He is the only person who she will listen to. Mrs Tishell reads more into it than Martin intended but does agree to reopen. Louisa has further problems to deal with at school, when she meets Toby (Rocco Peacock), Angela Sim’s (Caroline Quentin) nephew. His parents think he has ADHD, but have left him with Angela whilst they are working abroad. Angela tries to juggle moving her surgery, looking after Toby and setting up a mobile veterinary clinic. Toby falls ill with Scarlet Fever and is sent home to rest. Toby infects Angela with lobar pneumonia, which Martin discovers when she collapses whilst out walking her dogs, and has to treat Angela in her surgery.

Chris Packham: Asperger’s And Me Tuesday 17 October, BBC2, 21.00
For most of his life, broadcaster and naturalist Chris Packham didn’t tell anyone about the one thing that in many ways has defined his entire existence. Chris is autistic - he has Asperger’s Syndrome, which means he struggles in social situations, has difficulty with human relationships, and is, by his own admission, “a little bit weird”. But what if there was a way of taking away these autistic traits? Would Chris ever choose to be ‘normal’? In Chris Packham: Asperger’s & Me, Chris invites us inside his autistic world to try to show what it’s really like being him. He lives alone in the woods with his “best friend” Scratchy the dog; but he also has a long-term partner, Charlotte, who discusses the problems Asperger’s creates in their relationship - she describes Chris as being sometimes “like an alien”. Chris experiences the world in a very different way, with heightened senses that at times are overwhelming, and a mind that is constant bouncing from one subject to the next. Growing up at a time when little was known about autism, Chris wasn’t diagnosed with Asperger’s until he was in his 40s. With scientific advances offering new possibilities to treat his condition, Chris travels to America to witness radical therapies that appear to offer the possibility of entirely eradicating problematic autistic traits; but he also meets those who are challenging the idea that autistic people need to change in order to fit into society. Confronting this deeply personal subject with brutal honesty, and reflecting on the devastating struggles of his adolescence, Chris explores the question of whether he’d ever want to be cured himself, or whether, ultimately, Asperger’s has helped make him who he is today.
Gordon Ramsay on Cocaine
Thursday 19th October, ITV1, 21.00
“I saw cocaine quite early on in my career. I’ve been served it. I’ve been given it. I’ve had my hand shaken and left with little wraps of foil in it. I’ve been asked to dust cocaine on top of soufflés, to put it on as icing sugar… Coke’s everywhere. It’s spiralling out of control.” Gordon Ramsay This brand new two-part documentary series shows Gordon Ramsay as viewers have never seen him before, stripping away the veneer of cocaine’s glamorous image to expose how behind the powder many Brits consume as part of a night out, lies a trail of criminality, cruelty and death driving its global trade. During the series Gordon will travel to South and Central America where he witnesses the illegal “cooking” process by which the drug is made, meets hired assassins and a big time drug-smuggler, is witness to the immediate aftermath of a suspected cocaine-related murder and experiences the harsh reality of the ‘war on drugs’ by joining an elite Colombian anti-narcotics unit on a helicopter raid. Cocaine use in the UK has gone up 400% in the past 20 years and cokerelated deaths have increased 4 years in a row, tripling since 2011 to an alltime high. After joining Dorset Police on patrol catching drug drivers who test positive for cocaine, Gordon meets the Head of Drugs Intelligence from the National Crime Agency, to find out more about the volume of cocaine on the streets of Britain. Tony Saggars, NCA says: “Gun crime is closely associated with the drugs trade. People are making a lot of money out of it, but to make that money people are generating a lot of misery…This country demands high volumes of coke; organised criminals take advantage of that.” Gordon joins a rapid response unit from the NCA, who are tasked with using intelligence to intercept big drug deals, as they rush to a suspected handover in West London. Gordon watches as covert officers detain an Albanian man carrying tens of thousands of pounds used to buy and sell cocaine. To see the volumes involved for himself, Gordon meets a drug scientist at a forensics laboratory. 30 kilos of cocaine which have been seized by the police are analysed in an attempt to find out where the cocaine has been processed. Scientist Peter Caine shows Gordon some of the astonishing ways cocaine is smuggled into the country, from X-rays of people who have swallowed 120 pellets of cocaine, to powder dissolved into a bottle of rum: “Cocaine in the hydrochloride form is very soluble. You can actually dissolve two grams of coke in millilitre of water. This was a smuggling technique that is used for time to time…If you were to drink 1 mouthful of that [the rum containing a large amount of dissolved cocaine] you’d die.” After a 15-hour journey, Gordon arrives at the tip of the remote amazon jungle and drives along a dirt road for an hour to a small village. He treks for 90 minutes through the dense rainforest to find the discreet plantation of a small-scale farmer, who risks everything to produce cocaine by growing, processing and cooking the coca plant. Gordon says: “Finally. This is the coca leaf. This is the start of the process of making cocaine. Who’d of thought such a soft, smooth leaf can turn into something so powerful.” It becomes apparent the farmer doesn’t have many other options to feed his family. Gordon explains: “The government have given up on the locals. He can’t harvest fruit because it’s nowhere near enough money to keep that family alive. The guy’s got no alternative. That’s not an excuse. The devastation of being caught and what would happen to the family would be awful. You’ve got this humble farmer, he’s got no idea of the war, the violence, the killings, and then the power of cocaine. He’s got no idea.” Gordon is astonished to watch the process first-hand, as cement powder is added to the chopped up coca leaves before sulphuric acid, gasoline, battery acid and bicarbonate of soda are added and the substance is refined and cooked to a paste to be sold to the cartels. Gordon is stunned: “I’ve cooked some serious s**t in my life and been to some extraordinary places, but nothing quite on this level...”

It’s Christmas in Aden. Romance is blossoming between Armstrong (Tom Glynn-Carney) and Yusra and the RMP are bolstered by news of Abdul-Kadir Hakim’s capture by another regiment. Concerned about the publication of damaging photographs taken by the American reporter Martha Franklin, Markham (Ben Miles, pictured) orders Joe to meet with her and retrieve the film. He does as requested but is disarmed by her confident charm and there is a clear spark between them. As Alison (Jessica Raine) struggles to cope with Page’s death, Ed (Stephen Campbell Moore) reveals his knowledge of her affair and attempts to reconnect with her. When she reveals that Joe (Jeremy Neumark Jones) has prevented Honor befriending her, Ed defies him and invites Honor (Jessie Buckley) round for Christmas Eve games. After Christmas dinner, everyone heads to the BP Club. Since the Markhams are staying at home this year, Honor offers to take George. Despite having reluctantly agreed to swim with George, Joe instead passes him onto Yusra so that he can sneak off to meet Martha (Essie Davis) for a drink.

The celebrity version of the hit real-life thriller continues, for Stand Up To Cancer. All seven celebrities remain at large, but for how long? It’s a scramble for survival for Steph and Dom Parker, who believe the hunters are closing in after information is elicited from their manager. As confusion over addresses abounds, the pair have a chance to make their escape, but only if Steph can pack up her bras in time. With the hunters’ social media campaign up and running, Jay McGuiness and Siva Kaneswaran are the first to fall foul of the public’s hunger for cash rewards. Model fugitive Anneka Rice makes her first mistake, by contacting an associate who the hunters already have in their sights, and Spencer Matthews walks into the hunters’ trap when they set up a sting operation targeting his girlfriend.

Headteacher Mr Drew Povey and his two deputies - Mrs Benigno, and Drew’s older brother Ross - have their work cut out as Year 11 mocks season begins at Harrop Fold School. There are tears, tantrums and refusals to even sit the exams, so it shouldn’t surprise the staff when the results are in and aren’t good. With only a few months until the real GCSEs - in a climate of budget cuts, a new exam system, and with one of the toughest year groups they’ve ever had - Mr Povey is having sleepless nights and Mrs Benigno is doing all she can to turn things around. The school throw everything they have at the problem, putting on extra lessons, calling a special parents’ evening and trying to inspire confidence in their students. And all this while Mr Povey has to keep the rest of the school running. His background in behaviour management is put to the test when Year 8 Sean has a fight in the corridor.

Set in your ways?
hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
NEVER reach this stage with your hair: never tie yourself down to one image or look, always modify your style, every now and then, and never commit to one colour for years on end. This is how you can always be one step ahead of the game, hair-wise. As a stylist, there’s nothing worse than seeing someone
dragging themselves down, and stuck with a dated style. Setting yourself in an era will not only age you, but do nothing for your self-image. Even small changes to your style will bring it back to life; altering the length or layers, adding in a fringe or changing the whole style will give you, and your
hair, a new lease of life. Colourwise, always consult your stylist. They will check your skin tone, makeup and even the colour choice of clothes you have in your wardrobe. As you age, your skin colour changes, too, and sticking to the same colour can often drag the tone away from your skin. Consult us at Robot Hair for a free, indepth, hair-image check, with no obligation. This will enable you to be sure about even a slight change, before you take a leap.
Get yourself in a ruffle By Carl pattison
WE predicted it here, earlier this year, and they’re swamping the stores with every shade and texture alike. Ruffles are big news, and can be taken from classic to rock chic, depending on your taste. Opt for asymmetric ruffles to give an edgy slant on this, or symmetrical for a more-chic appearance. There are so many ways to wear this look, and it spans right through the age groups. Check out denim ruffles for a modern twist. Checks look good, too, worn with simple colours to
Bombay Babu’s new station!
The Restaurant before
BOMBAY Babu’s eagerlyawaited Indian Tandoori Restaurant, in Playa de La Arena high street, has finally arrived after a refurbishment programme lasting some three months. It means the long wait is over for tourists and residents on the west coast of Tenerife, and the fourth Bombay Babu Restaurant enjoyed a great response when it opened last week. The restaurant was packed all night long, not only with diners wanting to eat in, but also with customers wanting takeaways. The décor of this Bombay Babu restaurant sets it apart from the other three, even
complement. Your ruffles can be worn on you, or used in your accessories ie bags and shoes. Don’t overdo it, though, and keep them simple and not too fussy. Worn in the right way, this
is a look that can complement all figures and shapes. Even evening-wear has taken on this look, with crushed, ruffled velvets and organzas; it’s up to you how you get yourself wrapped up in ruffles.

though the food and quality is, naturally, of the same high standard. Unlike the company’s last restaurant, which opened in La Tejita and has a really modern feel, featuring mood lighting, this establishment is based on people actually dining on a train. There are train windows on the wall, for example, through which you can see
Bombay train station! And between the windows are luggage rails! The attention to detail is just as impressive as in the other Bombay Babu restaurants. However, if you prefer, you can eat on the large terrace, which looks out over the Atlantic Ocean. The next question has to be: “Where is the next stop going to be?”

Driving licence categories - part 1 By Emma
from Motorworld
Drivers' licences OVER the next few issues, we are going to explain what the driving-licence categories are, what they mean and their usage. What are the types of categories? There are currently 15 different categories. They are AM, A1, A2, A, B, BTP, B+E, C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E. The BTP category has now been eliminated, to comply with EU rules, However, this only happened last year, so many people still have it showing on their licences. So, if you have, don't worry! What do each of the categories represent? AM: This category allows the holder to drive a twoor-three-wheeled scooter, or light four-wheeled vehicle, although the category can be limited to three and four wheels. The minimum age for holding this licence is 15. A1: This category allows the
use of a motorcycle of up to 125 cm3, with a maximum power of 11 kw and a ratio of weight/power of 0,1 kw/ kg, and three wheelers with a maximum power of 15 kw. The minimum age for holding this is 16. A2: This category allows the use of a motorcycle of up to 35 kw, with a ratio of weight/ power of 0,2 kw/kg. The minimum age for holding this is 18. A3: This category allows all motorcycles and threewheeled vehicles. The minimum age is 20, although, until 21, a three-wheeler of a maximum of 15 kw cannot be used. To summarise, the A categories are for scooters, bikes and three-wheeled vehicles. B and B1:This is probably the most-common category seen. This category allows the use of cars, vans and 4x4s, where the weight doesn’t exceed 3.500 kgs, and where they are designed and constructed to transport no more than eight passengers, plus the driver. This type of vehicle can have an attached trailer, providing the maximum authorised weight doesn't exceed 750 kgs. Minimum age is 18. You may drive a “pair of vehicles” comprising a car,
van or 4x4, plus a trailer where the permitted weight exceeds 750 kgs, as long as the total weight doesn’t exceed 4.250 kgs, this being under a Category B licence. Three -and-four-wheeled scooters and motorbikes After three years, a category B licence allows the holder to use a scooter/motorbike of up to 125cc. Also allowed are BTP priority vehicles when they are being used for an emergency service, school transport vehicles when students are being transported, and vehicles designed for transporting passengers in a public service capacity. All the mentioned vehicles are allowed up to 3500 kgs, and where the number of seats, including the driver, doesn’t exceed nine. B+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the B category accompanied by a trailer with a maximum permitted weight of 3500 kgs. C1: Vehicles that aren’t authorised under the D1 or D category, whose maximum weight exceeds 3.500 kgs, but doesn’t reach 7.500 kgs. This includes large vans and small lorries, and vehicles that are designed and constructed to transport no more than eight
passengers, plus the driver. Said vehicles can tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 750 kgs. C1+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the C1 category accompanied by a trailer or semi-trailer whose weight exceeds 750 kgs, but whose combined weight doesn’t exceed 12,000 kgs. Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the B category, plus a trailer or a semi-trailer whose weight exceeds 3.500 kgs, as long as the combined weight doesn’t exceed 12.000 kgs. C: Vehicles that aren’t authorised under the D1 or D category, whose maximum authorised weight doesn’t exceed 3,500 kgs. This includes large vans and small lorries and vehicles that are designed and constructed to transport no more than eight passengers, plus the driver. Said vehicles can tow a trailer of up to 750 kgs. Minimum age of 21. C+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the C category accompanied by a trailer or semi-trailer whose weight doesn’t exceed 750 kg. Minimum age of 21. D1: Vehicles designed and constructed for the
transportation of no more than 16 passengers, plus the driver, and whose maximum length doesn’t exceed eight metres. Said vehicles can tow a trailer of up to 750 kgs. Minimum age of 21. D1+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the D1 category accompanied by a trailer whose weight exceeds 750 kgs. Minimum age of 21. D: Vehicles designed and constructed for the transportation of more than eight passengers plus the driver; this refers to minibuses and buses. Said vehicles can tow a trailer of up to 750 kgs. Minimum age of 24. D+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the D category, accompanied by a trailer whose weight exceeds 750 kgs. Minimum age of 24. How long do each of the categories last? Categories C1+ C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D and D+E are valid for five years, until the holder reaches 65; they are then valid for three years. All remaining categories are valid for 10 years until the holder reaches 65, then five years after that age; however, all the timescales can be reduced due to illness or deficiencies.
Water difference it makes! By Val Sainsbury JAPANESE women are well known for their slim, healthy and toned figures. While genetics almost certainly play a role, many claim that their morning ritual may also be helping them stay healthier. Put simply, most Japanese women drink water immediately upon waking. This ritual, now deeply rooted within Japanese culture, is actually a form of water treatment that’s scientifically proven to help remedy a number of body disorders. Unlike the US and other western countries, Japan’s population does not suffer heavily from disorders such as obesity and diabetes. It stands to reason that we could learn a thing or two from their healthier lifestyles! Why is drinking water so important? For a start, 70% of your body is made up of water, so it’s
essential to keep it fresh and topped up to keep it working properly. When the body’s water requirement is not met, it has a variety of negative short-term and long-term health consequences. Long-term dehydration can lead to rheumatoid arthritis, migraines, angina, colitis, dyspepsia, hypertension, obesity, haemorrhoids, breast cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, kidney stones, sinusitis and uterine cancers. The water treatment This is a proven method for treating body disorders, menstrual problems and eyerelated ailments. Also, you will feel invigorated the whole day after following this water treatment: Drink approximately half a litre of water, immediately after waking up, before brushing your teeth, and on an empty stomach Don’t eat anything for the next 45 minutes Drink water at least 30 minutes before eating, but not during the following two hours after breakfast, lunch, and dinner If you cannot drink this much on an empty stomach, then you can begin with one glass, or as much as you find comfortable. There
are several good reasons to adopt this regime. Helps rid the body of toxins As you drink water, it naturally urges movement in your bowels. At night, your body repairs itself, and casts out all the toxins. When you drink water on an empty stomach in the morning, you will flush out these harmful toxins, leaving your body fresh and healthy. Drinking plenty of water can help in increasing the production of muscle cells and new blood cells. Improves metabolism Drinking water on an empty stomach can increase your metabolic rate by at least 24%. It is very important for those people who are on a strict diet. An increased
metabolic rate means an improved digestive system. You will be able to follow your diet routine more easily if you digest faster. Drinking water immediately after waking up purifies the colon, making it easier to absorb nutrients. Reinforces healthy weight loss When you drink water in the morning on an empty stomach, you will release all your toxins and it will improve your digestive system. You will feel less hungry and your cravings will be reduced. This will prevent weight gain caused by overeating. Alleviates heartburn and indigestion Indigestion is caused by increased acidity in the stomach. You suffer from heartburn when the acid refluxes into your oesophagus. When you drink water on an empty stomach, these acids are pushed down and get diluted, solving the problem. Also, this provides a head-start for your stomach for the upcoming breakfast. Improves complexion and skin radiance Dehydration causes premature wrinkles and deep pores in the skin. It was found out in a study that drinking 500ml of water on an empty
stomach increases blood flow in the skin and makes it glow. Promotes shiny, smooth and healthy hair Dehydration can have a serious impact on your hair growth. Drinking plenty of water nourishes your hair from the inside out. Water makes up almost ¼ of the weight of a hair strand. An insufficient intake of water can cause brittle hair and thin hair strands. Prevents kidney stones and bladder infections Drinking water immediately after waking up is important for preventing kidney stones and bladder infections. It is a fact that drinking water on an empty stomach dilutes the acids which lead to stones in the kidney. The more water you drink (to a healthy limit), the more you will be protected from various kinds of bladder infections caused by toxins. Strengthens the immune system Drinking water on an empty stomach helps in flushing and balancing the lymphatic system, which leads to increased levels of immunity. A strong immune system will keep you safe from various diseases, and prevent you from falling sick as often.

Just say cheese! CHEESE is a nutritious food, made mostly from the milk of cows, but also other mammals, including sheep, goats, buffalo, reindeer, camels and yaks. Around 4,000 years ago, people started to breed animals and process their milk, and that's when cheese was born. Serving and storage Unpasteurised cheese with a range of flavours should not be sliced until purchase, otherwise it will start to lose its subtlety and aroma. Keep the cheese in conditions in which it matures. Hard, semihard and semi-soft cheeses are stored in
temperatures from around 8-13° C. Keep the cheese wrapped in waxed paper, and place it in a loose-fitting foodbag so as not to lose humidity, and maintain the circulation of air. Wrap blue cheeses all over, as mould spores spread readily, not only to other cheeses, but also to everything near. Chilled cheeses should be taken out of the refrigerator 1½ -2 hours before serving. Cheeses contain living organisms that must not be cut off from air, yet it is important not to let a cheese dry out. Do not store cheese with other strongsmelling foods. As a cheese breathes, it will absorb other aromas and may spoil. Wrap soft cheeses loosely, using waxed
or greaseproof paper, rather than cling film. Let cold cheese warm up for about half an hour before eating, to allow the flavour and aroma to develop. Cutting The way a cheese is cut depends largely on its shape and size. The most important thing to keep in mind,
when cutting a cheese, is to divide it so that everybody has an equal share of the inside and outside. Keep in mind not to saw the cheese, but cut it in one, fluid motion. Use wired cheese cutters to cut soft cheese. Allow the cheese to attain room temperature before cutting, as it will
be softer and easier to cut. While handling cheese with an extremely soft texture, it is better to keep it in a jar and take some out with the help of a spoon. Use specialised knives when cutting different types of cheeses, so as not to contaminate them.

Cats Welfare News
Seniors are great! IF you’re considering adding a new, cat, family member, here are a few reasons why senior cats can make the best companions of all. When senior cats are adopted, they seem to understand that they’ve been rescued, and are all the more thankful for it. Their personalities have already developed, so you know they will be a good fit for your family. Many of them have already learned the ropes of family living. They’re often housetrained, and have mastered all their commands already, so don’t require much in the way of training. Senior cats aren't just an ideal match for older people, and they can also be an excellent choice for a home with children. Senior pets are more gentle and tolerant, and can make loving, patient, safe companions for kids of all ages. They’re often content just to relax or sprawl out on you, as long as they're in your company. Mouky
Mouky is 7-8 years old, and, for a lot of people, that may seem too old for them to consider adopting, but, as most cats can easily live to a ripe old age of 16+, Mouky still has a long life to live. Doesn't he deserve to have a loving, safe home? He is happy living with other cats, and is at an age where life is good, as long as there's food and a warm bed. He has been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, and already has his passport. He is also leukaemia negative, so is able to mix with other felines. Adoptions All our cats awaiting
adoption can be seen on our website at www.catswelfare-tenerife.com/pets. Ring or Whatsapp Maria on 6466 29129 (seven days a week 9-6pm), or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm, on 6712 82773. Message us on Facebook, or contact us on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. All cats go on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you adopt two kittens together, kitten injections, micro-chips and neutering is FREE for the second kitten. Adopt a black kitten, or two, and BOTH kittens receive the above
treatments, free of charge! Foster carers needed We do not have a refuge, so we urgently need people who are willing to foster kittens who are too young to be adopted, but need a safe place to stay until they are old enough to go to a forever home. Also, cats recovering from surgery, illness or injury need somewhere to recuperate. We provide all the essentials for your foster cat: litter, food, litter tray, beds etc, and all veterinary bills are covered. We advertise and find them homes, so you do not need to do this. Please contact us if you feel you can help.
Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10-6pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 6365 90557, and he will arrange collection from you.

The coins are mounting up JO, our Canarian Weekly designer, has been collecting coins over the last few months, to help raise money for Leukaemia Care UK, and has managed to get a place in the charity’s team, running in the 2018 London Marathon. She has started a “Brown Money Challenge”, in which she is asking people to donate their one, two and five-cent coins. They have been
mounting up, and she’s been counting and banking as she goes. Canarian Weekly is helping her spread the word by getting readers to raise as much money as possible for such a noble cause. Any donation, big or small, will be gratefully received, and Jo is playing her part by early-morning slogging around the roads, in a bid to build, gradually, her fitness levels.
If you would like to drop off any coins at the OasisFm/ Canarian Weekly offices in La Chafiras, near popular bathroom company El Baño Barato, we are open Monday-Friday, from 9am til 5pm. No counting necessary! You can also leave them at The Swan and Manhattan’s Bars in Los Cristianos, or ring 822 141 517, and Jo will arrange for them to be collected.

Britannia Bar Loch Inn B Mad Hatters Nauta Rejects Reef The Hunters
IT has been another excellent week in the Tenerife pool super league, and pictured here is Sam Maughan (Nauta Nomads) ready to break off in his final game on Tuesday night against Phil Evans (Legends B). Sam won the game to become joint-top on stats with Graham Bollesty and Ben
Bowen. Both Both play for Legends A, and all three have played nine games, losing just one. The Second Division sees an early leader in the stats, Mark Gray (Reef), who has had a fantastic nine straight wins out of nine. Also on a 100% record is Dawn Kelly (BBJs United), with five wins from five. Individual stats are important, but it’s all about the team performance. Bar Leones are proof of this because they are topping the Second Division again this week, with star
player Jeff Floyd on three wins from three. Reef are again on the same stats as Bar Leones, so things are still tight at the top. Three weeks into the league and everything is running smoothly, and the new format of 12 straight single games seems to be working well. One notable difference is that the night seems to last a bit longer than before. I’m not going to complain about that, though, and I’m sure the bar owners won’t be, either. Everyone’s a winner!

Wonder-goal reboots season Real Sociadad 1 Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 2
WHAT better way to banish those losing blues than picking up the first win of the season on away turf! That’s how Tenerife rolled back to form after the previous week’s 0-5 home defeat. Real Sociedad felt the backlash from a determined Tenerife side, out to prove their worth and climb up the Spanish Premier League. Tenerife should have
been leading at half-time after being awarded a penalty, but Pisco’s spotkick was saved by the home keeper. There was a quick reprieve after 67 minutes, however, when they won another penalty following a teasing run from Ange Koko. This time Maria Jose Perez took the spotkick and left the keeper floundering. Ramero brought the home team back into the game with a 75thminute strike to leave the
game finely poised… so how about something really special to clinch the game? Ivory Coast player Koko had just the thing in her bag of tricks. Pinned down by her marker, seemingly, she pulled aside from her, skilfully, and curled a wonderful long shot, up and into the home net to seal the game. Tenerife are at home to Zaragoza team Santa Teresa at San Isidro, this Sunday, with an 11.30am kick-off.

Malbasic leads charge CD Tenerife 2 Nastic 0 By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
ADVERSITY brings the best out of CD Tenerife. Longterm injuries to striker Longo and defender Camille, plus international duty for creative midfielder Acosta, could have dented the line-up. But their team-mates responded in the best way possible against Nastic. Vitolo was inspirational in midfield, Inaki made the left-back spot his own, and Malbasic was strong and unstoppable with his goals. Tenerife’s intentions were clear from the off, Malbasic shrugging off his marker
and firing a fierce, low shot that keeper Tejera turned aside. Tayron scooped an effort over the bar, and Juan
Carlos dug the ball out from a clutch of defenders to test the Nastic keeper again. The home attack had
Wonder goal seals point Real Oviedo 1 CD Tenerife 1 TENERIFE deserved a share of the spoils at Real Oviedo on Wednesday, and there was added satisfaction for them because they frustrated Aaron Niguez, their former player. He was not retained at the end of last season but didn’t have a chip on his shoulder… more like the full cod, chips, and a saveloy. It was a game of contrasts for Tenerife because they were sluggish in the first half, spurning chances they created. Malbasic hit the defensive wall with a free-kick and struck the rebound into a cluster of defenders. Midfielder Aitor Sanz, who bucked the trend, was gritty and determined, forcing Oviedo into several errors. Aaron, a good player for Tenerife last season, showed his talent with a lovely cross for Berjon to put the home side ahead after 19 minutes. Keeper Dani should have done better, but he was indecisive. The other side of former Rangers player Aaron was not so pleasant.
He indulged in niggling fouls, rolling around like a spiked pig at the slightest hint of a tackle, and trying to wind up his old team-mates verbally. Tenerife slumped back instead of chasing the game and were put under pressure, but Dani, keen to make amends, produced a string of confident saves, All that changed at halftime. Juan Villar came off the bench for Montañes and Tenerife soon had their tails up. Villar has great pace, adding a new dimension to Tenerife’s play, and his finishing isn’t too shoddy, either! After 67 minutes, Sanz launched a delicate pass into space just ahead of Villar, who ran on to it and
struck the ball perfectly for the equaliser. Oviedo were deflated but remained dangerous, and Dani had to make a smart save down at the post. But the addition of Alberto for Malbasic late on added some more defensive cover for Tenerife. Tayron, who had taken over from Juan Carlos, provided good service to the forwards. But the visitors, with captain Suso back from his fivegame suspension but left on the bench, couldn’t quite turn the draw into a win. The point kept Tenerife nicely tucked in fifth place in the table, with Numancia calling at Santa Cruz tomorrow (Saturday) at 7pm.
a nice flow to it, but there was plenty of work going on behind them. But Jorge and Aveldaño complemented each other in the centre of defence, and, veteran Vitolo’s midfield work rate was worthy of a teenager. When Vitolo broke up a Nastic break by Jimenez, he popped a quick ball up to Juan Carlos, who forced another save from the formidable Tejera. Full-backs do not usually get much praise, but Inaki was magnificent… strong in the tackle, supportive down the left wing and always ready to prompt another break. Nastic were continually grateful to keeper Tejera, who had to be on top form as Malbasic forced holes in their defence with his powerful runs. The second half started
with a close call from Aitor Sanz, his shot flying just inches the wrong side of the post. Malbasic blasted a save from Tejera after good work from Tayron, and the 12,567 crowd could sense that a goal was coming. Tejera’s clumsy lunge at the feet of Casadesus brought a penalty, and Malbasic crashed the ball into the back of the net to oblige fans and give Tenerife the lead. The keeper was booked for his actions, yet before the rule changes, he would have been sent off. But his coach replaced him anyway with the back-up keeper a few minutes later. Tenerife sub Montañes nearly scored with his first touch of the game, his shot stinging the gloves of the newly-arrived keeper. There was a big cheer for the return of injuryplagued forward Juan Villar, who replaced Casadesus. But was he back to full fitness? The answer was rapid: Aitor Sanz picked him out on the right and he sped forward, sliding a perfect pass into the path of Malbasic for the Serbian to bury the ball home. Yet it wasn’t all one-way traffic. Barreiro tested Dani Hernandez, but did little more than tickle his gloves. And the evening got worse for Nastic when Suzuki received a second booking and was on his bike with a red card. Malbasic earned the richly-deserved applause from fans when he went off for Brian Martin. But apart from a wide effort from Juan Carlos, that was the end of the scoring. Definitely a job well done!

Scruffys so smart again IT was back to League matters last Friday, and back to business-asusual because Scruffy Macs went to Picasso’s and came away with an 8-0 win. Clash of the night was Per’s game against Tom, who was in top form with a 174 and 137 check-out, just to get back to 2-2. And Tom went on to win won by the odd game in five. Palms Pool Bar hosted Pas O Nadas A and Cool Daddy - sorry, Daddy Cool - hit his usual 180, matched by Wattie, with his third max in as many weeks. The next leg, however, saw Wattie take 57 darts to reach a double! Spear Chucker’s Tomo hit a 144 check-out as the visitors posted a 7-1 scoreline against The Tavern A, who were shown how to finish. Boothen had Steve in form with yet another 180 as they won 5-3 at home against Ourplace Playboys. Sundowners
hosted Loch-In A, and, despite Chris playing out of his skin, the away team took the doubles and trebles to inflict a 6-2 defeat. It was nip-and-tuck as The Pub entertained Gaffers, with Joe and Dave throwing well. But the home team snatched the trebles for a well-earned 4-4 draw. Lady Macs were unlucky to lose out in the trebles after welcoming Marilyns A, finishing on the wrong side of a 5-3 result. Dylan was the Breakaways’ man of the match after they travelled to Pas O Nadas B and triumphed 6-2 over last week’s trophy-winners. Ourplace Playgirls hosted Luc’s Red Devils, who showed them where the doubles were to enjoy a 6-2 win. Naughty Nautas entertained Bar Leones and won 6-2 after some close games. CD Marino
Fightback nails victory
MARINO, stung by a cheeky Haria goal at the start of the second half, stepped up a gear and battered their Lanzarote visitors with an attacking onslaught to claim victory. It boosted them up to eighth place and was quite a transformation from a poor first-half stalemate, with few clear chances for either side. Marino provided the early pressure, but, too often, their crosses in were aimless. They including a couple of Fran corners, which eluded the huddle of players in front of goal. Diego should have made more of a chance after 12 minutes, when keeper Miguel lost the ball from a corner. But it was to be his only mistake on a stand-out afternoon. Toñito wasted his golden moment for the orangeshirted visitors, taking too long to tee-up a shot and allowing captain Javi Saavedra to rob him of the
CD Marino 2 Haria CF 1
ball with a well-timed tackle. Toñeca made some good runs down the left for Marino, and his cross on the half-hour was put just wide by Juanma’s glancing header. And Toñeca had a chance of his own, but a weak shot was dealt with easily by Miguel. Marino were expecting too much from their forwards with long, hopeful balls. They needed to get stuck into the Haria defence, and Toñeca closed the half with a wellstruck, curling shot from out wide. But a tame draw looked the best prospect. Half-time subs freshened up
the Marino line-up as Zeben and Nathan joined the action. But Haria nipped in with a fast break that ended with a Alonso goal from a tight angle at the post. Marino responded by charging at the away side with all guns blazing. Zeben found Toñeca with a neat, inside flick, and Juanma pressed the keeper to create pressure. Miguel, improving as the game went on, proved dominant in the air between the Haria sticks. Marino forced four corners in quick succession, but the keeper
got his fists to the ball each time as it flew across. Nathan offered Marino a good target, and his duel with Miguel for the high balls was compelling. Brazilian forward Rodrigo Alves replaced defender Carlos Saavedra, and, with Kevin Castro pushing upfield to add his tenacious ballwinning skills, Marino were looking the better side. The breakthrough had to come as Marino forced more free-kicks, and a loose ball came out to Pedro, who blasted it past the keeper to equalise. Juanma fired in a fierce shot, only to see it deflect out of play for another corner as Haria were pinned in their own half. Castro, proving to be a nightmare for the visiting defenders, cut in from the right and unleashed a shot.
Defender Angel stuck his foot out to clear but propelled the ball past his stranded keeper and into the net for an owngoal. That put Marino on top with just over 10 minutes left, and it prodded Haria into action, briefly. But a quick break by Tito was defused by the fast reflexes of Marino keeper David Kikvidze. The home side picked up their attacking thread again, with Nathan heading over, Toñeca shooting wide, and Juanma also finding the wrong side of the post. Castro showed his allround skills by tracking back to block a late Haria chance. But Marino kept the pressure on until the final whistle, Castro blasting wide in the final minutes, yet still emphasising his team’s second-half stranglehold. It was no surprise that Haria looked a little shell-shocked when the final whistle ended their torment.

Women’s Volleyball
We’re indoors, and in the big time now MUCH of the glamour and glory of women’s volleyball goes to the beach variety in Los Cristianos. But Arona Tenerife Sur are on the crest of a wave for the indoor game after winning promotion to Spain’s top league. The season started last weekend with a 3-0 defeat by Fachadas Dimorol Libbys in La Laguna. But tomorrow (Saturday), the ladies hope to welcome new fans for their home game against Minis Arluy VB Logrono at 6pm. They are based at the sports hall by the
municipal outdoor swimming complex in Los Cristianos. It’s going to be a much tougher season this year, but the ladies are relishing the challenge of the 12-team Superliga Femenina. After keeping the first set close last week with a 25-22 deficit, they found the going harder
in a 25-16 second set. But they showed good resistance before losing the third set 25-23. There are three Tenerife teams in the top league this season, the third one playing in Santa Cruz, so local pride and ambition will keep the Arona team on their toes.
Basketball
Home and away heartache SENTIMENT took a back seat to harsh reality as Txus Vidorreta, Iberostar Tenerife’s most successful coach of all, returned with his new team, Valencia, and grabbed a 70-67 victory. Success would have made it three opening wins for Tenerife in Spain’s elite league, but this setback dropped them to eighth place. Aaron Doornekamp, who also jumped ship with his coach in the summer, had a less-
than-glorious return, with just five points. But his new team-mates showed that they will be favourites to retain their Liga Endesa title. It was a close contest, with quarter scores of 18-20, 19-14, 15-19, and 15-17, and another topscoring performance by Mateusz Ponikta, with 14 points. Tim Abromaitis was just one point behind him. Tenerife’s European Champions League title defence got off to a disappointing start in
Latvia on Wednesday, with a last-gasp, 73-72 defeat at Ventspils. The first group game was nearly over when Zakis snatched a basket with just seven seconds left on the clock. There was more bad news for the team when Davin White picked up a leg injury which will sideline him for three weeks. New York’s Mike Tobey was Tenerife’s star with 20 points, while captain Nico Richotti chipped in with 14.
Youth Football
The Festive dream returns AFTER a two-year absence, the La Liga Promises youth football tournament returns to Las Americas at Christmas time, from 27-29th December, with the finest Under-12 players from the biggest clubs. Even better, it’s all free to watch, and, at last, the talented youngsters from CD Tenerife and Las Palmas are taking part. Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Roma, Inter Milan, Paris St German, Dortmund, Valencia, Juventus, Sevilla, Alaves, and Villareal, Espanyol, and JEF United of Japan complete the line-up for the seven-a-side competition. The games are 15
minutes each half, played on a half-size pitch, with goalposts two-thirds of normal size. The skills on show are always impressive, and it’s refreshing to see the youngsters performing free from the more cynical side of the senior game. The pitch is a reduced size, with bleacher seating surrounds, but
the Estadio Antonio Dominguez has plenty of room for the 5,000plus crowd that packs in for the grand final. All the games are covered on Spanish TV, and the countries of other competing teams are also taking at least highlights. It’s a welcome home-coming for a tournament that used to be an annual highlight of the festive break. But two years ago it moved to Miami, and last year it returned to Puerto de la Cruz. There is also a second competition, which, this June, was held in Villareal, where Barcelona won the event.
