SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is set to impose direct rule over Catalonia in an unprecedented move in the country’s democracy. The shock decision follows the refusal of Catalonia leader Carles Puigdemont to clarify whether he has actually made a declaration of independence. Rajoy will hold a Cabinet meeting tomorrow (Saturday) to trigger Article 155, which has been described as the “nuclear option”. The Article, which became a democratic rule in 1978, after the death of dictator General Franco, enables Madrid to impose direct rule in a crisis, which would be a first for Spain. Rajoy gave Puigdemont a Thursday deadline (yesterday), urging him to “act sensibly” when making his final decision. But in a letter to Spain’s Government, Puigdemont said the regional parliament could vote on a formal declaration of independence

Rajoy crackdown on rebels, using a direct-rule threat

if Madrid fails to hold talks with Catalonia. He wrote: “If the government continues to impede dialogue and continues

with the repression, the Catalan parliament could proceed, if it is considered opportune, to vote on a formal declaration of

independence.” But Rajoy said in parliament on Wednesday: “It’s not that difficult to reply to the question, ‘has Catalonia declared independence?’ “Because, if it has, the government is obliged to act in one way, and if it has not, we can talk here.” Puigdemont’s refusal to clarify his position means Rajoy can impose direct rule in Catalonia next week if he takes control of the “law-breaking region”. But there are fears that it could lead to civil unrest in the region. Puigdemont has already defied Rajoy this week, ignoring a first deadline to drop the independence campaign and calling for talks instead. But both sides have, for more than a month, traded blame for

the stand-off. Rajoy says the Catalan government has broken the law repeatedly, including staging its banned referendum vote on independence on 1st October. It also made a symbolic declaration of independence on 10th October, only to suspend it seconds later. Puigdemont counters by saying the violent police crackdown on the referendum, and arrests of pro-independence leaders on charges of sedition, show the Spanish state has become authoritarian. In the illegal referendum, more than 90% of Catalans voted to break away from Spain. And Puigdemont told the Catalan Parliament that the current relationship with Spain was no longer sustainable. “Catalonia has gained the right to be an independent state, and the right to be respected,” he stressed. “We are not criminals; we are not mad; we are not rebels. We are peaceful people.” British Prime Minister Theresa May has also weighed in on the debate, confirming that the UK government firmly believes the referendum had no legal basis.

Schoolkids’ walking lessons Continued from Front The end result will, it is hoped, produce a network of safe routes, encouraging more children to walk, cycle, or use public transport to get to school. The project, launched by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga (pictured) and Education Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, has four main principles: safety, sustainability, quality of life and the relative independence of the children. The Mayor said: “This pilot scheme calls for the implication of everyone in the wider education community, from teachers, parents, students and

school administrations. “It also includes the people living and working in Adeje, who need to work with us to ensure the advancement of the scheme.” Rodríguez Fraga believes the project will develop continuously, adapting to the demands and needs brought to the Council’s attention by schools. “We are inviting the participation of the larger community, which will help promote values of respect and social harmony,” he added. A major plus would be fewer cars being driven to, and parked outside, local infant and primary schools. The plan would also reduce

pollution and traffic-jams at school gates, and, therefore, increase the youngsters’ safety. It should also encourage more children to engage in this additional physical

activity, contributing to their overall health. Rodríguez Fraga also stressed that another advantage is that children will be able “to reclaim what is theirs: the streets,

the avenues, the pavements and the parks”. This, said the Mayor, would allow them to walk on their own, or with friends, and help them develop their own self-esteem, as well as their social skills. The project is introducing meeting points, where children can be met by monitors, responsible for ensuring students arrive to school. It also means that parents will no longer have to worry about trying to park outside school gates. In parallel, there are sessions for students about road-safety, and concerns by experts in the relevant fields, prevention being the underlying theme.

30 years on… and we now have fair deals for animals A EUROPEAN directive on animal protection will finally enter Spanish law next February, some 30 years after it was passed. The new law will ban docking or removing tails, cutting ears and de-clawing, unless they are purely for medical reasons. It means that these practices for aesthetic means, to stop cats ruining furniture, or to make hunting hounds more aggressive by slicing their ears off, will now be outlawed. Anyone attempting to carry out any of these operations on their domestic animals will be refused by the vet. The law should have been installed in Spain 10 years ago, but the right-wing PP, then in opposition, blocked it by pushing for an amendment, enabling declawing, tail-removal and ear-cutting to continue to be allowed. This amendment was rejected instantly by the socialist (PSOE) government at the time, and the impasse was never resolved. Now, with the reigning PP government in a minority, it has been over-ruled on the “cosmetic surgery” aspect. In fact, other than sterilisation, no other surgery may be carried out on domestic animals, except

for therapeutic reasons. The law, to be introduced in Spain on 1st February 2018, having been approved in Strasbourg on 13th November, 1987, will also require authorities to promote, actively, dogs and cats being sterilised, a practice that remains shrouded in urban myth in the country. Many pet-owners still believe neutering or spaying their cats and dogs makes them “fat and lazy”, although, medically, there is no evidence that doing so makes any difference to an animal’s body-weight or behaviour. Actually, those who sterilise their pets in an attempt to calm them down are usually disappointed. Another common misconception is that dogs and cats are more vulnerable to infection if sterilised. In

Red-hot sunshine!

fact, the opposite is true, since unsterilised females are more likely to attract undesirable attention from male if they go outside while on heat. And males which have not been castrated are often more likely to get into fights, causing injuries that could lead to infection. In addition, owners of cats and dogs often believe that females “should have at least one litter” to prevent them from suffering infection or illness, or for their physical well-being. It’s a belief which often leads to newborns being dumped on the street when just a few days old. Other “old wives’ tales” that abound include sterilisation being “cruel”, or “a violation of the animal’s rights”, or that northern European countries automatically spay and neuter pets

Saharan dust drawn in by Hurricane Ophelia also contributed to the effect, and street lights were switched on in some areas in the middle of the day because the sun was partially blocked. The Met Office said the effect on the sun was caused by winds lifting up Saharan dust. This was then reflected and refracted in longer wavelengths, giving a red appearance to the sky.

or guardians. And animals may never be given as prizes or rewards. At present, animal welfare rules are a postcode lottery, since Spain’s 17 autonomously-governed regions all have different laws. One of the most forwardthinking areas in this respect is Catalunya, where every town must have a council-run shelter for strays or ill-treated pets with a no-kill policy. No animals can be put to sleep except when they are suffering incurably, which must be funded by local authorities, which are not allowed to refuse any animals brought in. Catalunya also banned bullfighting many years ago, as did the Canary Islands. Many towns in Spain have systems in place for supporting local residents, who feed feral cat colonies, financial assistance with buying food, and agreements with vets to set up “trap, neuter, return” (TNR) programmes. Yet other towns simply ban feral-feeding outright and offer no support. They have no shelters in place, and they even charge for taking in stray dogs found outside “office hours”. These rules will now all be streamlined to ensure minimum standards across the country, so that animals’ welfare does not have to depend upon where they have been born.

Dog-killer poison was banned 20 years ago

A POISON, used to kill at least 15 dogs in Marbella last week, had been banned in the EU 20 years ago. AN amazing red sun was seen across Britain on Monday, thanks, in part, to the deadly wildfires burning across northern Spain and Portugal.

because they consider genitals on display to be “unsightly”. All governments and local councils will, by law, be required to debunk these myths and urge owners to have their pets neutered or spayed as soon as they are old enough, unless they are being prepared for breeding. This will also be controlled by authorities, particularly when it is for commercial reasons. The law regulates general animal care and requires councils and governments, actively, to carry out informative and educational campaigns about responsible and ethical pet maintenance. It also covers requisites for rescuing and care of animals which are mistreated, abandoned, lost, or, otherwise, strays. No animal may be put to sleep, except by a vet or another properly-trained person, unless it is necessary to put a creature out of its misery in an emergency, and it is not possible to get a vet to the scene in time. Where this is the case, the animal should be put out of its suffering as rapidly as possible, and with the minimum mental and physical distress. Pet-trainers must be qualified and have the necessary knowledge, and pets may not be given to under-16s without the consent of their parents

The industrial herbicide, used to kill insects from the roots of orange trees, was found wrapped around meat products in an Andalucian playground in Nueva. It was just one of the substances picked up by lab experts at the local health ministry, and the Town Hall stressed that it had not used this type of product “for a long time,

since its use was vetoed”. The statement followed rumours which had surfaced, saying the substance ingested by the pets was a pesticide, still being used by the local council to treat weeds. National Police, and the Guardia Civil’s animal safety group Seprona, are continuing their investigation and hope to charge suspects with animal abuse, which is a criminal offence. The deputy mayor of Nueva Andalucía said that three complaints had been filed for dog deaths, and that the Town Hall had, so far, counted seven dogs and one cat as fatal

victims. The PSOE says there at least 14 dead dogs, and two pets were affected by the herbicide near the Mayor’s Nueva Andalucía office. Detectives first found “toxic substances” at San Pedro’s Eucalyptus Park, as well as at Parque la Futura, in Marbella’s La Campana area, almost two weeks ago. Police closed off both parks, after the poison was discovered alongside children’s swings and climbing frames. Some dogs perished within minutes of coming into contact with the substance, and even sniffing it caused death within an hour.

‘Airline shouldn’t have folded’ MONARCH pilots are demanding that the UK Government investigates the circumstances surrounding the collapse of their airline company.

They are angry about reports that Boeing injected cash into the ailing company’s offshore account, Petrol Jersey, last year. The call, from pilots’ union BALPA, for a probe into the financial bailout, comes as Transport Secretary Chris Grayling has announced that he is considering reforms, which will mean failed airlines such as Monarch can “wind down in an orderly manner”. Grayling told MPs he was keen to avoid a repeat of the Monarch collapse, which sparked the biggest-ever, peace-time repatriation of Britons stranded overseas, at a cost of £60 million to the Government. It hopes to recoup some of this outlay from third-party tour operators and travel agents, who had bought seats on Monarch flights. The Transport Secretary told the Commons that the Government would examine any necessary reforms to

Green group is on pollution warpath ensure passengers “do not find themselves in this position again”. He added: “We need to look at all the options… whether it’s possible for airlines to be able to wind down in an orderly manner and look after their customers themselves, without the need for the government to step in. We’ll be putting a lot of effort into this in the months ahead.” Meanwhile BALPA, representing the 400 Monarch pilots who lost their jobs when the airline collapsed, says they “want to know the truth about the sale of Monarch to Greybull Capital in 2014”. The union also wants the government to look into

the role of the company’s former financial backers, the Swiss-based Mantegazza family. The sale of Monarch by the Mantegazza’s to Greybull meant pilots had to accept 30% pay cuts and “huge pension losses”, it said. In addition, BALPA wants the Government to investigate a £165m bailout of Monarch last year, which was thought, initially, to have been funded by Greybull, but is now reported to have come from Boeing. The union says pilots also want to know the truth about the airline’s selfdeclared insolvency on 2nd October, “when it appears that it could still have operated”.

EXPERTS from green group Ecologistas en Accion have criticised Spain for not complying with the EU’s air-pollution levels. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which can cause serious respiratory problems, was found in excess levels across the country in urban areas. Madrid and Barcelona, in particular, have settled into a state of “chronic non-compliance”, says the green group. “Year after year, they have failed to comply with regulations, since enforcement began in

2010,” said a spokesman. Yet he praised Madrid for car bans, and its plans to introduce further restrictions, saying: “It is adopting measures for permanent reductions of pollution. But Barcelona does not have those ambitious goals.” The European Commission sent a “final warning” to Spain for “constant non-compliance” in February, with Brussels stating that the pollution “poses a serious health risk”. The country is now likely to be fined heavily. The Ministry of Environment says that La Gomera capital San Sebastián is also guilty, as are Valencia and Granada, “mainly through traffic”.

Adeje Brits will still be Adejeros TIM Hemmings, deputy head of Mission to the British Embassy in Madrid, reassured a packed meeting of British nationals, resident in Adeje and other parts of South Tenerife, that those present were not about to be “kicked out of Spain”. And, in line with recent and on-going conversations he and his team were having with government representatives, in the UK and Spain, the rights of British residents in Spain, and other parts of the EU, continued to be one of the top priorities in the Brexit negotiations. Mr Hemmings was paying a well-publicised visit to Adeje, along with Charmaine Arbouin, the Consul for Southern Spain and the Canary Islands, as well as Helen Keating, vice-consul in Tenerife. Prior to the public meeting,

delegation members were welcomed. The delegation were welcomed officially to the borough by Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, Adeje Councillor for the Presidency and Deputy Mayor. She told them: “Adeje is a borough where over 120 different nationalities live together, side by side, in harmony and with no problems.” And she said there was no reason why that would not continue. The Councillor also stressed the importance of being on

the “padrón”, the residents’ register, “and making sure you renew your existence on the padrón when you are required to”. Over 80 British nationals, resident here in South Tenerife, attended the public part of Mr Hemming’s visit, when he spoke to assure people that the rights of British people who had chosen to live abroad was, genuinely, the UK Government’s Nº1 priority. He outlined the current, relevant negotiations, stressing how many areas of agreement there were

now between the British Government and the EU team, before opening the floor to questions. People were concerned about a range of issues, from taxation rights to pensions, passports and the possibility of dual nationality, currently not possible, and the likelihood of needing visas to travel to and from Spain in the future. Needless to say, all delegation members dealt effectively with all the questions asked. Following the meeting, those who had

attended said they certainly felt their principal questions had been answered. They were also grateful for a chance to meet the Embassy representative. For his part, Mr Hemmings stressed the importance of keeping the Consul and the Embassy up to date with the public’s concerns about the negotiations. He assured them that, given the large number of Britons living in Spain, the UK Government does pay particular attention to the views coming from this country.

Building your pension pot

You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have:

• You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commitments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot.

Do you know you get tax relief on payments you make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot.

We’ve turned Tenerife Pink Facebook fury over car-dog in heatwave A FURIOUS Facebookuser posted a video and photos of a dog, locked in a car parked in Siam Mall for three hours in a heatwave. In the video, two women are seen confronting the dog-owners, who finally returned to their vehicle after the Police had removed the poor dog. “The police have taken

your dog to the kennel,” says one of the women, who notified the police. The other one tells the owners that they have been denounced for abandoning their pet in a roasting vehicle. The photos and video, which have been shared more than 2,000 times, have sparked hundreds of comments.

Cops and robbers in a hair-raising move

TWO men, aged 45 and 23, were arrested by Arona Local Police at 4.30am on Tuesday after breaking into a Las Galletas hair salon. Neighbours called the authorities to say they had seen two suspicious men, dressed in black and one carrying a crowbar, on Avenida Principle Felipe. The cops found them on

Calle Sol del Sur, after one man hid inside a bank’s cash-point area, and left a bag containing stolen items and a television. When asked what they were doing, one man said: “We are moving house.” But when officers searched the the pair and their belongings, they found tools and goods stolen from the salon.

Book of history is given shirt shrift! A BOOK, printed by Spanish Civil War Republicans using bandages and rags, has now gone on display.

Around 500 copies of “España en el corazón. Himno a las glorias del pueblo en la guerra”, were printed by soldiers in Catalunya’s Montserrat monastery in 1938. The group, desperately short of printing material, used the friars’ monastery workshop and worked with bandages, together with an enemy flag and a Moorish prisoner’s shirt. Some soldiers fleeing

into France took copies with them, but most of the books remained in Catalunya. Of the five left in existence, one has now been put on display in the library of Republican Minister Juan Negrin.

THE annual International Breast Cancer Day took place yesterday (Thursday), and, this year, an island-wide campaign to Turn Tenerife Pink was achieved in spectacular fashion. The idea was to raise awareness of breast cancer among the general population, with an explosion of pink bows all over Tenerife… on trees, buildings, homes and balconies. Just about every borough adopted the campaign, and the general public also played their part, many wearing a pink ribbon, or displaying one on their cars. “Early detection and investigation are also an important part of this campaign,” said Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, who, last week, hosted a press conference to launch the event. “We all have, or have had, at least one woman in our lives

with breast cancer, which now affects an increasing number or younger women, and men, too.” Adeje volunteers ensured their own borough went Pink because they were out all week placing pink ribbons on every tree and lamp-post. They even recruited Cliodna O’Flynn, Adeje Council’s hard-working Press Officer, to get out and about with them! Guido Gianoli, (President of the Asociación Benéfica Italo-Canaria ABIC),who spearheaded the campaign, estimated that there were over 15,000 pink ribbons on trees all over the island

yesterday. “Breast cancer knows no frontiers, colour, race or religion,” he said. Ámate President Maria del Carmen Bonfante thanked Guido, the relevant councils, and all those contributing to the campaign, for their work and commitment. The initiative was also supported by several private institutions, including the Rotary Club, CaixaBank, CEST, Anima Tenerife, and Vive Tenerife. Also involved in the campaign were cancer associations AECC, Walk for Life and CEST, along with other participating institutions.

Faulty airbag warning for Mercedes’ drivers

BRITISH owners and drivers of Mercedes-Benz cars in Spain, including Tenerife, have been alerted to a possible problem with some of the luxury German models. Mercedes-Benz in the UK is recalling almost half-a-million cars, with a potential, short-circuit, electrical fault, which could deploy the airbags by mistake. The warning has also gone out to Brits throughout Spain, who might have taken their cars abroad and have been unaware of the recall notice. The fault affects about half the vehicles sold by the German car manufacturer since 2011. Mercedes said there had been 30 cases, worldwide, of airbags

deploying prematurely because of the fault, causing minor injuries in some cases. A company spokesman revealed: “We are recalling certain A, B, C, and E-Class, and CLA, GLA, and GLC, built between November 2011 and July 2017.” The company says the cars are safe to drive under normal conditions. But owners are warned that if a red, airbag warning light appears on the dashboard, they should

call for Mercedes’ roadside assistance immediately. “If the steering column’s module clock spring is broken, the airbag warning light will be displayed in the instrument cluster, as well as a red, airbag warning lamp,” it adds. “In rare circumstances, if the clock spring is broken and the wiring components are not sufficiently earthed, this could lead to an electrostatic discharge which could, inadvertently, deploy the driver’s airbag.” The recall repair takes about an hour and involves replacing a spring in the steering column. In March, Mercedes recalled some one million cars worldwide because of a starter component which could, possibly, overheat.

Costa Adeje catwalk!

COSTA Adeje is hosting a Tenerife Fashion evening on El Duque beach from 7pm on Thursday (26th Oct), when 18 beachwear labels will be seen on the catwalk, courtesy of a host of international models, promoting their products as well as the area. Adeje Council and the Cabildo, jointly, are backing the initiative, which will take place on a 25-metre catwalk by the beach, with seating, etc. Model Nieves ร lvarez will present the event, and, among the 40 models showing off their wares will be Carolina Gonzรกlez, Davinia Pelegri, Evelin Yรกnez, Nicole White and Kristel Kamp. It is seen as an excellent opportunity to integrate the promotion of the destination with the textile and other local industries, as well as underlying the excellence of Costa Adeje beach as an all-year-around holiday spot.

Cops pinch the tuneless fakers TWO men, accused of distributing fake 50euro notes and selling drugs, have been arrested in Ibiza, with police collecting more than 100,000 counterfeit euros and a further 24,000 in genuine notes. National Police officers across Spain were aware that a large number of fake

50-euro notes were being circulated, especially in Barcelona and Madrid. Hawk-eyed cops were intrigued when they saw two men, recognised as members of a local gang, hand a bundle of notes to a third man in Eivissa, on Ibiza. He then went into a guitar shop and bought an expensive, acoustic guitar. After the man left with the instrument, officers entered the shop and checked the notes, which proved to be counterfeit.

The discovery tied in with several complaints received locally from shopkeepers, and some branches of lottery charity ONCE. The cops visited three properties associated with the gang, and, during these raids, they arrested two men. The officers discovered 2,000 forged 50-euro notes, mainly stashed in the recently-purchased guitar, together with 24,000 euros in genuine currency, plus cocaine and heroin.

Pilgrims’ progress signals killer the patronal fiestas finale

Hit-and-run

ADEJE ended its annual patronal fiestas with the romería, or pilgrim parade, along the Calle Grande, last Sunday.

To the delight of the many visitors, oxen-drawn carts made their way to the parish church, with food and drink being handed out to the public, young and old, resident and visitor. The day began with the oxen fair, in which the public admired the decorated teams of animals as they prepared to draw the traditional floats in the parade. The carts are decorated and managed by many of the borough’s local associations and collectives, and, altogether, 14 carts took part in the romería parade. It was led by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, joined by the representatives of the different borough neighbourhoods and the

The event was organised in conjunction with the Adeje Municipal Folklore, all the main participants wearing traditional Canarian dress. It ended at the doors of Santa Úrsula church, where the town’s two patrons, Santa Úrsula and San Sebastián, were present to receive music and dance offerings, and agricultural

produce from the various collectives. The groups participating this year were the Adeje Seniors, Club Almácigo de Taucho, Asociación de Vecinos Las Moraditas, Cafelitos, Los Viñedos, Amigos Los Olivos, Amigos de La Postura, La Lolita, Amigos de Adeje, Fañabé, Los Cofrades, Scaut de Adeje, Juventud de Adeje and the Los

Olivos Diversity centre. As always, many folklore groups also took part: Grupo Santa Ana, Adeje Municipal Folklore group, Agrupación Folklórica Tagomate (Tirajafe - La Palma), Chimaque, Tagorosteros, La Diatam La Ahulaga (San Miguel de Abona), Boleros de Armeñime, Viñátigo de San Isidro, Igonce de Candelaria, Imoque and Raíce.

Almond trees doomed

Witnesses told National Police that the car involved was a white Dacia Sandero, which was later found, parked, by an officer. After further investigations, the cop discovered that the vehicle-owner lived in the South, and spoke with him at the address. The suspect collaborated with him, and, finally, turned himself in to the National Police voluntarily, after being identified. After his arrest, he tested positive for cannabis, cocaine and opiates, and was put at the disposal of the Santa Cruz Courts.

Man’s Masca

saviours

AN estimated one million almond trees have been infected with a deadly disease in Mallorca, and more than 150,000 have died there in the past decade from the Xylella fastidiosa bacterium. A “conservative projection” from scientist Eduardo Moralejo is that up to

950,000 trees are now infected with the pathogen. And farmers believe him! Moralejo was a lone voice when he first sounded the alarm over the disease back in 2010. Yet its threat, posed to the island’s agricultural sector, is now common knowledge. But while farmers rejoiced at the EU’s decision not to cull their countless olive trees to stop the disease spreading, the situation for almond-growers is far more precarious. In his latest report, Moralejo

again goes against the grain. He claims the disease has been present on Mallorca for two decades, and was not brought over from Italy in 2010, as was first thought. He presented evidence, based on Mallorca, to the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEDIA), that this strain actually came directly from California. Right now, the disease has been identified officially in 126 almond trees, 50% of the samples taken. But

Moralejo believes that at least 70% per cent of trees are infected, which translates to a one-millionplus figure. Most alarmingly, perhaps is his warning that the virus could experience a genetic mutation, which would enable it to transmit easily between almond and olive, vine and fig trees. This, he said, would be a “qualitative leap in the spread of the epidemic across the Balearic Islands”.

A MAN was airlifted from Masca after falling on to a rock and suffering a serious head injury on Monday afternoon. An emergency helicopter crew, who were alerted, flew him to Adeje Fire Station, from where paramedics transported the injured patient to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment.

Heat is now on the UK’s holiday

Sick-claim cheats send mes A COUPLE from Liverpool, featured in Canarian Weekly in July, have been jailed for making false holiday-sickness claims in a landmark case. Liverpool Crown Court heard that Deborah Briton, 53, and Paul Roberts, her 43-year-old partner, tried to claim compensation by complaining that they and their two children had fallen ill on holidays to Majorca in 2015 and 2016. But the couple boasted on social media that their holidays were full of “sun, laughter and fun”. Briton sobbed as she was sentenced to nine months in prison after admitting four counts of fraud in the private prosecution, brought by holiday company Thomas Cook. Roberts, sentenced to 15 months after admitting the same offences, cried and shook in the court throughout the hearing. Family members, including Briton’s daughter Charlene, charged, initially, with two

counts of fraud which were later dropped, shouted out in court as the couple were sent down. Judge David Aubrey QC, sentencing, said the couple’s claims, over stays at Majorca’s Globales America hotel, had been a “complete and utter sham”. The court heard the that couple, from Wallasey, Wirral, tried to claim nearly £20,000 for fake, gastric illnesses. And had they been successful, it would have also cost the holiday firm a further £28,000 in legal expenses. The judge said: ‘The claims were bogus from start to finish. You were both asserting, on your own behalf and on behalf of your two children, that on two separate holidays you had suffered illness. They were totally and utterly fake.” He also said their claims, made in August last year, must have required planning and premeditation. “Why? Pure greed,” he said. “Seeking to get something for nothing.” Judge Aubrey said there had been an “explosion” in

holiday-compensation fraudsters

ssage, on the way to prison gastric illness claims made by holiday-makers from the UK. And what will come as a huge relief to travel firms, hoteliers and those running holiday complexes, especially in Spain and the Canary and Balearic Islands, the judge added: “Those who may be tempted in the future to make a dishonest claim in relation to fake holiday sickness… “If they are investigated and brought to justice, whatever the circumstances of an individual, he or she must expect to receive an immediate, custodial sentence.” Sam Brown, prosecuting, said the couple had holidayed at the Globales America hotel in Majorca with their two children for two years in a row. After their June 2015 holiday, Briton had written on social media: “Safely home after two weeks of sun, laughter, fun and tears. Met up with all our lovely holiday friends, who made our holiday fab.”

A post, after returning from the second holiday, in July 2016, read: “Back home after a fantastic holiday, my favourite so far. Thanks to our holiday family for being part of it; plenty of holiday memories made to treasure.” Yet in August that year, they contacted David Norman Solicitors to make the claims. A Thomas Cook spokesman said: “The sentences handed down today demonstrate how serious the issue of fraudulent illness claims has become.” An intimated letter of claim, read to the court said: “Our clients’ holiday was ruined, due to their symptoms, as they were ill for the entire remainder of the trip. They were unable to enjoy the holiday.” But Mr Brown said: “Both defendants knew that, in issuing this claim, he or she would be lying in order to support it.” Briton was later contacted by a travel rep from the hotel, who asked about the claims. In a message, the mother-of-four told her the claims were “down

to Paul with his dodgy dealings”. British holiday-makers returning from their summer break were warned just months ago that they faced prosecution if they made false sickness claims against tour operators. Cowboy claim firms told the public, incorrectly, that there was no risk if they sought compensation, despite not being unwell, according to travel-trade organisation ABTA. It added that people were being bombarded by coldcallers and social-media messages, with requests to submit claims after they arrived home from an overseas trip. The penalties for those caught include a fine, criminal record and potential imprisonment, either in the UK or in the destination of their holiday, said ABTA. The court heard that when interviewed by the probation service so the pre-sentence reports could be prepared, the couple both said the claims were

“exaggerated” rather than “fake”. But prosecutor Mr Brown told the court there had been a 500% rise in the number of claims for damages resulting from holiday sickness in recent years. He also said the industry had introduced a number of measures to tackle the problem, adding: “One of the measures being the commencement of private prosecutions, of which this is the first.” In July, a couple who made a “fundamentally dishonest” compensation claim after making up a stomach bug, were ordered to pay thousands to Thomas Cook. Julie Lavelle, 33, and her partner Michael McIntyre, 34, demanded £10,000 after claiming that they and their two children had vomiting and diarrhoea during their stay at Gran Canaria’s Parque Cristobal Hotel in 2013. But McIntyre, who was meant to have gastroenteritis, was alleged to have had six pints of beer in Las Palmas Airport

before flying back to the UK. And a survey they filled out on the plane said the holiday had been either “good” or “excellent” in all areas. Also, they did not mention their so-called condition to hotel staff or tour representatives in the resort during their break, according to Thomas Cook’s lawyers. The couple were taken to county court in their home city of Liverpool, where Thomas Cook secured its first victory in a campaign against fake, holidaysickness claims. Judge Juliet Herzog, who agreed the claim was dishonest, ordered them to pay the travel giant £3,744 compensation within 28 days. Both cases should have the holiday fraudsters running for cover before next summer, as well as the compensation claims’ companies, one of whom was closed down recently after being exposed for sending out touts to bring in business from those in holiday hotels.

Just our cup of TEAs!

By Kirk Readings

THREE African gymnastic dancers, two dance troupes, circa 20 drummers and a Nathan Swift… welcome to the “TEAs Does Carnival 2017!” It was a show-stopping start, if ever there were such a thing, as the drummers made their way up through centre crowd, and the dancers exited either side of the stage. All of which left Nathan, the most revered compere in Tenerife history, to soak up the atmosphere. It set the tone and the following four hours did not disappoint. The energy levels remained high, the claps and cheers raucous throughout, as the Tenerife Entertainment Circuit, and its followers, got together to celebrate another 12 months of world-class talent. Even before the show’s energetic, colourful opening scenes, the afternoon’s carnival atmosphere was taking shape. A stilt-walker, circus-skill dancers and immaculate costumes drenched the opening area to Castillo San Miguel, and began to sculpt the theme. The first of the awards went to our newcomer victor, Lisa Kay, who couldn’t have sat further from the stage as her shock was apparent, shaking in a fantastic tartan dress as she began the award collections. The support for her was loud and vociferous, a feature that remained in force throughout

the afternoon, every nominee and every performance acknowledged likewise. A full run-down of winners is listed, each worthy, and all gracious, their gratitude to establishment owners and colleagues shown, with respect paid to other shortlisted acts. And, of course, a nod to the support which is, unequivocally, provided, yearin, year-out. The respect level between peers was obvious because there were some surprise reactions from winners, who obviously hold others around them in such high regard. And the only eruptions for which the Canaries should have been on standby were those of a human nature, as DJ Dylan collected his award for Entertainers’ Entertainer. After years of covering almost every aspect of circuit entertainment, and doing so with a smile on his face, he has the most positive of outlooks. It will be worth looking up DJ Dylan in the dictionary because he’ll be described in a single word: Inspiration! Another inspiring element of the afternoon was a spinetingling dedication to those affected by the tragic, global

events of the past 12 months. Corinne’s performance of “Barcelona” left the auditorium on their feet, some with tears in their eyes, and all with their hair on end. Aside from the outstanding show-opener and Corinne’s operatic excellence, the venue was treated to four, special, live performances from the Best Variety nominees. Captain Jack Starling, Dave Michaels’ take on the much-loved family classic, audience-participation show, set the bar high for his three rivals, and nobody was disappointed. Dragalicious performed an uptempo crowd-pleaser, wearing outfits designed specifically for the TEAs, and Mister Sister, a multiaward winner here, squeezed no fewer than three of our favourite characters from his internationally-successful repertoire. Dare we say that Honey G might have to be considered for next year’s best tribute? The afternoon belonged to Roxy Risque, the final performer and winner of the award for Best Variety Act 2017. She dazzled and left the crowd with little to wonder about the human anatomy in

her typically-raunchy outfits. With a wonderful vocal and independentlyproduced, one-off audio, Roxy’s performance was Carnivalesque and thoroughly deserving of the gong. The TEAs would never be a complete visual and audio experience without the next generation strutting their stuff and showcasing the fantastic talent the island’s youth has in abundance. Firstly, the Estrellas Stage and Theatre School performers put on an excellent display of movement and vocal, and the Ritmania troupe had a similarly-outstanding reception as the crowd watched the group perform to a professional level. Both outfits provided a taster of what we can expect from the circuit over the transition to another generation. The younger entertainers were well-represented throughout the awards, but the well-versed, experienced Kracka were acknowledged with the coveted Outstanding Contribution award, which was a fabulous thank-you to 40 years of performing together. Added to the wonderful

performers and worthy winners, a first-time, official Guinness World Record Attempt, and the enormity of the afternoon’s atmosphere begins to take form.

“Twerk with Kirk” was a one-off TEA’s occurrence, orchestrated from the rear by “yours truly”. It was a fully-official, recognised attempt by Guinness World Records, and the process of accumulating all evidence is now under way. Every individual in the building was, in some way, involved, if not “twerking” then filming or, in one case, stage-invading! And, irrespective of what you decide to wear to next year’s TEAs, one thing is assured: the afternoon will not disappoint. It never does!

Currencies Direct celebrates that special, 21st anniversary

Above: Working together (l to r): Jayne Carfoot, Ignacio Ortega, Donna Dent, Nick Russell and Carol Schleisman, Business Development Manager of Islas Canarias, who runs the Tenerife office. Below: A cut above: Carol does the honours.

THE Tenerife office of Currencies Direct invited clients and partners to join them in celebrating the company’s 21st anniversary, which also coincided with the third anniversary of its branch opening. Currencies Direct, which has been in Spain since 1999, now has 13 branches, from the Costa Blanca to the Costa del Sol, in Valencia, Tenerife and Mallorca, plus a new Benalmadena office, which has just opened this week. The anniversary get-together was an excellent opportunity to say a huge thank-you to the people involved for their continued support, and an ideal chance to introduce the newest members of the Canaries’ team. Nick Russell, Business Development Executive, joined CD just over a year ago and is working in Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. Jayne Carfoot, who started in March, is working with Donna Dent in Tenerife as a Client Account Executive. The event was well attended, with, understandably, most guests based in Tenerife. However, there were also representatives from Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventu-

ra. Everyone enjoyed drinks and nibbles, and the “birthday” cake was washed down with some bubbly, following a few words from Ignacio Ortega, Regional Manager of Costa del Sol and the Canaries. Although it was planned as an early-evening “do”, it stretched into the night, as usually happens. Needless to say, a great time was had by all, and here’s to Currencies Direct’s next 21 years! *Send your money on the move! 48-Hour Challenge is fright to parents A WORRYING “game” called the 48-Hour Challenge, which encourages children to go missing for up to two days at a time, is circulating on Facebook. This dreadful viral trend also awards points for every social-media mention while they’re missing. And this means that frantic friends and family, who post appeals to find them, are welcomed.

It’s a copycat version of the “Game of 72”, that circulated in Western Europe several years ago, when children attempted to go missing for up to 72 hours. Social media, and Facebook in particular, is a fertile space for ridiculous trends and challenges to spread. Recently, the duct-tape challenge saw kids taping each other to posts. And one youngster crushed an eye-socket when he injured himself while trying to break free.

By Paul Montague at blevins Franks

IN general, double-tax treaties, signed between countries, are designed to determine the taxation rights of the different income and gains, when there is a conflict. This is when assets are located in one country and the individual is resident in another, or when someone is considered resident for tax purposes in two different countries, due to each country’s domestic rules. UK nationals living in Spain need to understand how the Spain-UK, double-tax treaty works and affects them. It is important to know where your taxes are due. This article looks at

20th October - 26th October 2017

some key provisions of the current double-tax treaty signed between Spain and the UK (entered into force on 12th June 2014) which may affect UK nationals living, or owning assets, in Spain. Residence As a general rule, you can only be treated as tax resident in one country. However, it is possible to fulfil the domestic criteria of two countries, in which case your tax residence status is determined by the double-tax treaty. The treaty's “tie-breaker” clause comes into operation if you are resident, both in the UK under UK rules, and in Spain under theirs. This determines in which country you are regarded as resident for the purpose of taxes covered by the agreement. There are different criteria such as your permanent home, centre of vital interest and habitual abode. If none determines your residence status, it comes down to nationality or mutual

agreement between both countries. If you are resident in Spain, it is your responsibility to declare yourself to the Spanish tax authorities, and submit an income-tax return each year. If not, you risk being subject to a tax investigation and paying penalties. Pensions Under this treaty, certain UK pensions are exempt from taxation in Spain. This concerns Government Service pensions, mainly fire, police and civil service, armed forces and local authority pensions, but not NHS. Note, however, that the amount of Government Service pension received must now be included in the calculation, which determines how much tax you owe in Spain. This is called “exemption with progression”. So, although this pension income is not taxed in Spain, this effectively means that your other income, which

is directly taxable in Spain (e.g. other pension and rental income), may be pushed into higher rates of tax, often resulting in larger tax bills. Other pension income such as UK state pension and occupational pensions are taxable only in Spain, provided you are resident in Spain. The UK will continue to deduct tax-at-source from UK pension income (except for UK state retirement pension which is always paid gross), until they are satisfied you are both resident and paying tax on this income in Spain. Capital-gains tax on sale of shares Previously, Spain had no taxing rights on gains realised by UK residents on the sale of shares in any Spanish company. However, the current treaty reinstated Spanish taxing rights on any company whose asset-base comprises at least 50% of Spanish property. Where Spanish property is

owned via a company, Spain is granted taxing rights on any sale of shares connected with the ownership of the property (along with the UK if held by a UK company). Cross-border tax planning can be complex, with various, potential pitfalls. To ensure you get your tax planning right, and make the most of the tax-mitigation opportunities available, seek personalised advice from a firm which has in-depth knowledge of both Spanish and UK taxation, and the interaction between them. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. For more of our articles visit our website www. blevinsfranks.com

Bank mortgage costs deemed to be abusive By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

THE Floor Clauses (Clausula Suelo) Court 2 of Santander has ruled that mortgage payment costs by clients is abusive. A claim was presented by a Liberbank client on 2nd June, the day after the Courts of Floor Clauses were set up, and the judgement was issued one month later. The judge understands, in the 26th July ruling, that the clause is a general condition that, predisposed to the contract, “imposes on

consumers, and is against good faith by creating imbalance to the detriment of the clients”. The resolution declares the clause null and void, but does not force the bank to return the expenses charged in the formalisation of the mortgage, since the claim did not request it. But the bank will not be allowed to collect future expenses such as, for example, the cancellation of the mortgage. The bank is the one interested in registration of the mortgage In its resolution, the judge refers to both registry fees and notary fees, stating that both are coming from acts performed in the bank’s interest. The judgement says: “The interested party in the Deed of

Mortgage is the bank, because it gets many advantages of all kinds”. For the client, a private document would be sufficient, with neither notary fee nor registry fee. This means the notary and registry fee would be paid by the party who is interested in these services. He continues: “The bank is the one interested in a Public Deed, so the bank will have to pay for it.” Regarding taxes, the judge points out: “The charging of all taxes to the borrower has no balance.” On this point, he refers to the December 2015 Supreme Court judgement recalling: “It cannot be understood that the lender is outside of the taxes that could accrue.” Abusive clauses Finally, the judgement refers

to the clause invoked in the application, which “is not null itself, and does not violate any mandatory or prohibitive rule”. Nevertheless, the judgement considers that it does not surpass the control of abusiveness, since “it is generic and written in such a way that it refers to expenses of future accrual and eventual”. And also, the clause “includes all expenses incurred”, so “for these reasons alone the clause is abusive; it is not forbidden to impose on the borrower all reasonable expenses”. In other words, it is not illegal to charge the client with part of the expenses. But it is illegal to charge him ALL of them. It continues, saying: “It is possible to think that in a

context of fair and equitable treatment, within the framework of an individual negotiation, the bank could never, reasonably, expect that its client would have accepted such a draconian rule.” Therefore, the Court declares the partial nullity of the abusive clause (charging the client all expenses and fees coming from the Mortgage Deed), as well as the condemnation to the bank not to use it in the future, and to assume the procedural costs. The judgement can be appealed by the bank before Cantabrian High Court, so we will return to this matter in forthcoming Canarian Weekly editions. www.abogadosmadrid tenerife.com

Elizabeth I’s Secret Agents

Bromans

Monday 23rd October, BBC2, 21.00

Thursday 26th October, ITV2, 21.00

This three-part series uncovers the network of spymasters and secret agents that helped protect Queen Elizabeth I from assassination, terror and treason for over 40 years. During a period when Britain was divided, unstable and violent, one of the world’s first secret services was born. Run by William and Robert Cecil, this father and son team had the duty of protecting the Queen and the Country. This series asks leading historians to each study the period from a different key player’s point of view, dissecting the minds and motivations of the protagonists, to reveal a covert spy network - and present a picture of the Elizabethan Court as it really was. This series takes us through the biggest events of the period, from the entrapment and execution of Mary Queen of Scots to the death of Queen Elizabeth I, the capture and escape of Catholic fugitive John Gerard and the most infamous terrorist conspiracy in British history - the Gunpowder Plot.

This World: Calais, The End Of The Jungle Tuesday 24th October, BBC2, 21.00

This extraordinary programme documents the final days inside the Calais Jungle, as the largest migrant camp in Europe turns to flames. Positioned deep inside the camp, five-time Bafta-winning director Dan Reed and his crew chronicle the events that unfold as the French riot police prepare to move in. A small team of British volunteer fire-fighters, equipped with just a couple of jet washers and an old 4x4, attempt to control a vast blaze which will eventually consume the camp. The film captures the scale the British volunteer aid effort when, in the wake of the Syrian refugee crisis, a huge influx of donations arrives and thousands of hot meals, wooden shelters, tents and sleeping bags fill the camp. Though an orderly eviction is planned, filmmakers capture the chaos predicted by the volunteers, as shelters are set alight. The Jungle was estimated by humanitarian groups to have reached a population of 10,000 at its height. Its residents were evicted on 24 October 2016, and now no traces remain of this vast shanty-town of thousands of people from all over Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The film-makers returned to Calais periodically over the subsequent weeks and months, revisiting both migrants and volunteers as the French riot police worked to stop the formation of a new camp at all costs. Now, there are no more road-blocks and there is no more camp. Instead, there’s mass homelessness and dozens of young migrants playing an endless game of cat and mouse with the French police. One year on from the eviction, this film tells the story of the closure of the Jungle through the eyes of those inside.

Eight 21st century lads are to be transported back to the Roman Empire to see if they can cut it as gladiators. The handsome boys will fight it out with help from their loving girlfriends. They may have the muscles but do these lads have what it takes to go down in history? Cameras will follow eight modern day couples as they’re transported to an ancient world where they’ll live and fight like gladiators did 2000 years ago. Along the way there’ll be blood, sweat, tears and plenty of laughs. However, only the very best will make it through to the Emperor’s Games where one of them will emerge victorious and take home the Emperor’s gold (which today works out at ‘approximately’ £10,000!). The boys will be trained by the fearsome “Doctore”, played by David McIntosh, and take part in daily, physical tasks, leading up to a grand final where they’ll battle it out in the colosseum in front of a baying crowd. Those who don’t cut it will be banished from the city. Acting as the eyes and ears of the elusive Emperor is his Assistant, “Dominus”, played by Tom Bell. The boy’s girlfriends will join them on their journey, helping to train and prepare them for the Games as well as immersing themselves in ancient Roman tasks - from wine making to sculpting. Whilst living in ‘ancient Rome’, the couples will wear the attire of the day - sandals, leather loin cloths and gold lamé pants, and share a living space inside a Roman palace.

The Ganges with Sue Perkins

Thursday 26th October, BBC1, 21.00 In this second episode we find Sue is half way down the mighty Ganges, in the ancient city of Varanasi. Many travellers to India will stop off here for a day or two, to take in the sights of this extraordinary place. But for India’s 950 million Hindus it has a unique significance. She immerses herself into the complex life of Varanasi, where the power of the Ganges is at its greatest and where life and death exist side by side. In this intricate human habitat, Sue explores the lives of its people. She fishes with resourceful young men, who have designed an ingenious new way of making a living out of the river, tries her hand at handloom weaving and heads to the countryside to meet an all-female vigilante group, who are demanding to be heard. But, believe it or not, the main reason for many to come to Varanasi is death. If you are Hindu, then to die here, and to be cremated on the banks of the Ganges is to achieve Moksha and escape the eternal cycle of death and re-birth. To understand more, Sue visits Varanasi’s so called death hotels - a sort of departure lounge to the next world. She walks the lanes of the old city encountering dead bodies being rushed past on their way to the cremation grounds and meets an Aghori monk cleansing his soul in the Ganges river and rubbing the ashes of dead bodies all over himself. Sue makes her final stop at the Manikarnika Ghat, Varanasi’s most prestigious funeral pyre, where bodies are burned on open fires so their souls can be released into a different realm. It is like nothing Sue has ever seen before.

Dara Ó Briain and Angela Scanlon are back with the most thrilling series of Robot Wars yet, along with unforgettable commentary from the legendary Jonathan Pearce. The new series features an all-new competition format, that includes Robot Redemption, and the biggest battle in Robot Wars History, the Ten Robot Rumble…a ten robot, no time limit, last robot standing, fight to the death, to determine who takes the wildcard and final spot in the Grand Final. This series has 30 ferocious fighting robots, with a few old favourites alongside some new and amazing machines, built by incredible roboteers, fighting in the purpose-built bullet-proof Robot Wars arena in Glasgow. The arena is even more dangerous this series, with the all new hazards The Fog Of War being added to the Dial Of Doom, causing chaos by filling the arena with a dense fog. As the robots are covered in this thick mist they are vulnerable to not only attacks from their opponents, but from our deadly house robots Dead Metal, Matilda, Shunt, and Sir Killalot. The first five episodes are heats, with each episode featuring six teams, beginning with two fierce group robot battles, with the two winners automatically making it through to the semi-finals. The four losing robots have a final chance to redeem themselves in the Robot Redemption Knockouts in order to secure their place in the Semi-Finals.

At a time when relationships between different cultures and faiths are under particular strain in the UK, My Week as a Muslim explores what it’s like to be Muslim in Britain today, to challenge some of the assumptions and prejudices that different communities have about each other. In this one-off immersive programme, Katie, from a predominantly white town in the North West, gets to know Saima, who lives just a short drive away in Manchester. Saima wants to challenge Katie’s commonly-held views about Muslim people. To do this, Saima, a British born Muslim with Pakistani heritage, invites Katie to spend a week living in the heart of Manchester’s Pakistani Muslim community.

The 18-30 Stone Holiday ITV1, 21.00

Eight plus size Brits, some well over 30 stone, are travelling to the world’s only plus-size friendly hotel, The Resort in the Bahamas. For years they’ve been ashamed of their bodies but at The Resort, the sun loungers are supersize, the beds are reinforced with steel and the guests can strip off without humiliation. Baring their souls and bodies across the week, the gang confront their deep-rooted body issues before heading home ready to change their lives for the better.

Your style, your way

hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot

YOU either bother, or you don’t; it either matters to you, or it doesn’t. Caring about your hair is a matter of choice. It either goes with your lifestyle and image, or it’s something to get out of the way. We, as stylists, can’t make a client look after their hair or image; it’s up to

the individual. We, at Robot, believe you aren’t properly dressed without your crowning glory. Taking care of your hair doesn’t finish after your salon visit; it’s all about aftercare and styling advice, to maintain your look at home.

There are times when you just want to throw up your hair in a ponytail, but there are moments when making that extra effort is necessary. Having your stylist work with you is how it’s suppose to go. We are here to help you create the look you want. Making an effort for an occasion shouldn’t be a chore; it’s all part of the event. Let your stylist loose, the next time you have reason to look your best. After all, isn’t it better to stand out for bothering, than for not making a little effort?

YOU either DIY it, or you buy it; either way, embellished fashion is hot on the high street, and there are so many ways to do it. From rhinestones to pearls, studded to feathered, the list goes on. It’s up to you if you want to take it subtly, or go the whole way. If you’re not into doing it yourself, the fashion stores are littered with variations, taking the simplest of items, such as jeans, and making them look a million dollars. Team up your look with a simpler item, so as not to overdo it, and you have a showstopping outfit.

If you have the patience, then ordering your own decorations online will give you a totally-original piece. It’s time consuming,

but well worth it. Whichever way you decide to do it, oomph up your image by getting creative - and start embellishing!

visiting? MANY people, who buy a property in Tenerife, do so because they have family who will visit and use the place as well. It may be grandchildren or just younger members, but it is worth considering whether you should make any special arrangements, in order to make their stay pleasant and safe. Often, the property bought in Spain is considerably smaller than the main family home, and it may be impractical to set aside a bedroom just for the children. So it’s important to make the best possible use of space, and to choose multi-purpose articles, where possible. For example, furnish the bedroom with single beds so that they can be used separately for the children, or pushed together for visiting adults, as required. Better still, use storage beds that lift up easily, with the mattress and bedding in place, to reveal storage space that might otherwise be wasted. Ideal for the storage of toys, suitcases and other bulky items that can be in the way, or take up a lot of room. Alternatively, consider putting a basic sofabed in the room, which can then be used for the dual purpose of a TV lounge for the children, converting

into a bedroom at night. Use opaque suncurtains that will encourage the kids to go to bed earlier, and sleep later in the morning, and also help to keep the room cool and prevent soft furnishings fading. Consider other tricks, such as a pouf or stool in the lounge, which provide extra seating and storage space. Avoid the possible danger of trailing cords from blinds, and use stickers on patio windows, at both adult and child heights, to avoid accidents. If you have a patio without a solid wall, and which isn’t on the ground floor, check

whether you can pass a tennis ball between the supports of the patio fencing. If you can, you need to take extra precautions, such as screening, to prevent accidents. If you are having young children to stay on a regular basis, it may be best to avoid pale-coloured sofas, or, at the very least, use throws to cover them up. There are some factors you may need to take into account that probably wouldn’t apply in the UK, sand and suncream being two of them! All the items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789 729.

Wine and Dine

By Val Sainsbury SPINACH is believed to be of Persian origin. By the 12th century, it spread across Europe and became a desirable leafy green, known for good health, a reputation that stands firm to this day. The name Florentine is often used to describe dishes containing spinach and a creamy sauce. It is thought that this name dates back to the 16th century, and the Italian wife of France's Henry II, Catherine de Medici. The unverified tale states that Catherine introduced spinach to the Court of France, and, to honour her Italian heritage, she then decided to call any dish containing spinach, Florentine. Spinach belongs to the goosefoot family, one of nutritional powerhouses including beets, chard and quinoa. It shares a similar taste profile with two of these vegetables; the bitterness of beet greens, and the slightly-salty flavour of chard. There are three different types of spinach generally available: savoy, semi-savoy and smooth leaf. The Popeye effect There is much lore regarding spinach, most famously as the source of Popeye's strength. When faced with

the sight of trouble, pipesmoking, sailor-man Popeye would burst open a tin of spinach. Once consumed, his biceps would bulge and his new-found strength would see him overcome his enemies. Although there is definitely lots of goodness in those leaves, the legendary status Popeye bestowed on it is slightly inflated. Nutritional highlights Spinach is available all year round, but is in season during the spring (March June). It is well known for its nutritional qualities, and has always been regarded as a plant with remarkable abilities to restore energy, increase vitality and improve the quality of the blood. There are sound reasons why spinach would produce such results, primarily the fact that it is rich in iron. Iron plays a central role in the function of red blood cells, which help in transporting oxygen around the body, and in energy production. Spinach is also an excellent source of Vitamin K, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and folic acid, as well as being a good source of manganese, magnesium, iron and Vitamin B2. Vitamin K is important for maintaining bone health, and it is difficult to find vegetables richer in vitamin K than spinach. Others include kale, broccoli and green cabbage. Don't be shy with your portions when cooking spinach. Its high water content means it reduces in size by about a quarter, when cooked.

20th October - 26th October 2017

Research The dark-green colour of spinach leaves indicates they contain high levels of chlorophyll and healthpromoting carotenoids. These phyto-chemicals have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancerous properties, and are especially important for healthy eye-sight, helping to prevent macular degeneration and cataracts. Spinach has good levels of iron, but not quite as much as originally believed, because rumour has it that researchers placed the decimal point in the wrong place! It is important to note that there are two forms of dietary iron: “haem” iron and “non-haem” iron. Haem iron is found in animal products, and is the most-efficiently-absorbed form of iron. Non-haem iron is found in plant foods (such as spinach), and is a little harder for the body to absorb in comparison. However, vegetarians, those who experience iron-deficiency anaemia and those who are pregnant, are encouraged to include green, leafy vegetables, such as spinach, as part of a balanced diet. How to select and store

Fresh spinach should be medium-to-dark green, fresh/looking and free from evidence of decay. It should be stored, loosely packed, in a sealed plastic bag in the fridge, where it will keep for about four days. Do not wash spinach before storing, as the moisture will cause it to spoil, although do ensure it is washed properly before consumption, as the leaves and stems may collect soil and chemicals. Raw spinach has a milder taste, described as metallic by some, once cooked. If cooking, opt for steaming, sautéeing or microwaving, rather than boiling, to preserve the nutrients. Frozen, baby-leaf spinach can be bought and stored. It comes in individual blocks, a handy and tasty alternative to frozen peas. Safety Spinach contains a high amount of oxalate. Individuals with a history of oxalate-containing kidney stones should avoid overconsumption. A low-oxalate diet is usually defined as containing less than 50 milligrams of oxalate per day. Spinach has more than

50 milligrams, so is best avoided. It also contains high levels of oxalic acid, which, in excess, can inhibit the absorption of other important nutrients such as calcium. Lightly cooking spinach is thought to reduce the oxalic acid content. Recipe suggestions Because of its excellent taste and nutritional value, spinach is a popular leaf all over the world. Spinach adores being paired with nutmeg: Creamed spinach Buttered spinach with feta ...is best friends with garlic: Aubergines filled with spinach and mushrooms Speedy soy spinach ...and really is most versatile with dairy, fish and meat: Spinach and feta-stuffed chicken Parmesan spring chicken Smoked mackerel risotto Simply steam or add to salads and soups: Zingy courgette and spinach salad Creamy lentil and spinach soup with bacon Warm cauliflower salad Quick-and-easy, super spinach suppers: Salmon and spinach with tartare cream Stir-fry prawns with peppers and spinach Chickpea, tomato and spinach curry Haddock-and- spinach cheese melt And, not forgetting, lots of pasta dishes! Bacon, spinach and gorgonzola pasta Pasta with chili tomatoes and spinach Gnocchi with roasted squash and goats' cheese

Cats Welfare News

Reach for the sky!

Tomorrow's the day (21st October) when Cats Welfare's Sharon Leighton and her friend Bridget Barnett are going to take a running jump, and you can sponsor them! Both ladies will be tandem paragliding, to raise money towards the charity's HUGE vet bills. Sponsor forms are in the Cats Welfare charity shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur, and various bars and restaurants. So dig deep, guys; you know it's a good cause. If you would like to sponsor them by PayPal, our e-mail address is info@catswelfare-tenerife.com. Put “Paraglide” in the notes box. Trick-or-treat? Halloween's getting close, and there are going to be scary costumes and trickor-treaters, not to mention lots of sweets! If you own a cat, there are a few things you might want to keep in mind, to ensure you can all still have fun. Cats, especially black ones, continue to get such unfair press this time of year. It puts them at risk, in terms of their physical safety, and they can become very vulnerable when it comes to being the target of cruelty. So, be vigilant, and keep

your cats indoors if you can. The sights and sounds of people in costumes can be very unsettling and frightening for some cats, and you might find your cat has disappeared to a hiding place for a while. Remember, if they are outdoor cats, it's important that they have means of identification such as a microchip, and a collar with a tag. If they're found, they can be returned as soon as possible. If your cat has a habit of door-darting whenever it's open, then Halloween's probably a challenge for

you. To keep them safe, put them in a separate room to prevent the chance of them slipping out while you're handing out treats. As for sweets, we all know they're not good for you, or your pets. Chocolate is especially toxic to cats. Cats don't, typically, have a sweet tooth, but if they've got into the habit of swiping food from the table, or been exposed to sweet food from family, make sure all treats are kept out of their reach. Adoptions We have playful, energetic and fun kittens waiting to be adopted at Vet Express,

Torviscas Alto (6156 05888), and Don Perro vet at Las Chafiras (922 735582). All are completely litter trained. All our cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.catswelfare-tenerife.com/pets. Ring or Whatsapp Maria on 6466 29129 (seven days a week 9-6pm), or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm, on 6712 82773. Message us on Facebook, or contact us on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. All cats/kittens go on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you

adopt two kittens together, kitten injections, microchips and neutering is FREE for the second kitten. Adopt a black kitten, or two, and both kittens receive the above treatments, free of charge! Foster carers needed We do not have a refuge, so we URGENTLY need people who are willing to foster kittens who are too young to be adopted, but need a safe place to stay until they are old enough to go to a forever home. Also, cats recovering from surgery, illness or injury need somewhere to recuperate. We provide all the essentials for your foster cat: litter, food, litter tray, beds etc, and all veterinary bills are covered. We advertise and find them homes, so you do not need to do this. Please contact us if you feel you can help. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc. for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. Catwalk superstars! LAST Sunday (15th October), six of K9’s pupsters took to the catwalk at Siam Mall, to promote the adoption of rescue dogs.

Winston, Ghost, Charlie, Sami, Marco and Lucy loved every minute of it, especially all the attention, and were perfect ambassa-dogs for the charity. Ex-K9 chums, now happily adopted, came along in support, and much fun was had by all. Not only was a very welcome 160 euros raised, but, perhaps most important of all, the profile of rescue dogs, and the message that, given the chance they so

deserve, they bring so much to a home as happy and contented family pets and companions. K9 Christmas Party This year’s K9 fundraising Christmas Party is on Friday, 9th December at Showtime, Adeje (exit 78, TF1). Tickets are 25 euros per person, and include a chicken meal (or vegetarian option), drinks all evening (excluding spirits and bottled beers), entertainment from Let It Be Beatles, and compere Aidy Evans. Tickets are available from: Lin 626 344 799; Mikey at k9mikey@gmail.com: Studio 5 hairdressers, Los Cristianos 922 794 304 and K9 refuge 667 638 468. There will be raffles on the night,

and please do bring along treats for the K9 wonderdogs and cats. Genji’s back Stolen from K9 in the early hours of Saturday, 30th September, Genji has been found safe and well. Thank

you to everyone who shared the appeals to find him. Now to find this lovely guy his forever home and family. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving,

safe-and-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Yelas Travellers 8 - 4 The Hunters division 2 Table

PROUD Legends B (pictured) have collected their trophy for winning the 2017 Tenerife Pool Summer League 2017. They are currently seventh in the First Division and travelled on Tuesday to League newcomers Union Bar, who are still one place above them after a 6-6 draw.

Star of the evening was Marcus Rees, who won his three games to go fifth overall in the stats. Coming up soon is the first round of the Cup/Plate competition, in which Legends B will play Britannia Inn. They have had a slow start to their season, but they’re only four games in, so the panic button is not being pressed just yet. Their star man so far this season is my mate Lee Bedson, currently 17th in the

stats. And, to be fair, Britannia Inn have had a tough start. This week, they lost 7-5 at Legends, who are now third in the First Division. Congratulations to Yellas Travellers, who have taken top slot in the Second Division. Only Nauta Rejects have beaten them this season so far. Best of pool-playing luck. everybody, and have a great week.

Women’s Volleyball

Helena is record-breaker Arona Tenerife Sur 3 VB Logrono 2

WHAT a way to start the home campaign in the Superliga Feminina! Few would have given Arona Tenerife Sur a chance against VB Logrono, who had won their last 95 games. Yes, 95 games! But the Los Cristianosbased ladies, who caused a sensation, really had to dig deep, especially in the second set. The set scores were 25-16, 31-29, 19-25, 17-25, and 15-

11, and star of the night was Arona´s Polish player, Helena Skowronska, who scored 30 points. It was a tremendous boost

for the home squad, who now know they can compete with the best after winning promotion to Spain’s top division last season.

Selling CDT to China FOOTBALL is a global language, which can break through cultural and political barriers, and CD Tenerife are reaching out to establish an academy in China.

After lengthy negotiations, the club have struck a three-year deal with the International Football Academy to open a centre in Shenzhen, home to one of the big China League teams, of the same name. Tenerife have a strong, youth-development programme, producing top players like Ayoze Perez, who is now starring for Newcastle United. In the last few seasons, the club have spread their net wide to recruit senior signings from countries

such as Honduras, Argentina, and Japan. And the new academy will train male and female players, aged from four to 18 years. The Tenerife influence will be strong, the club’s blueand-white colours raising their profile in one of the fastest-growing converts to the beautiful game. CD Tenerife President Miguel Concepcion, along with International Football Academy Director General Roberto Mikel, announced the link-up this week, stressing that fair play and education would be key parts of the academy programme. Tenerife are also looking at more possible academies, starting with Panama, home country of legendary, ex-Tenerife player Rommel Fernandez.

Battered, bruised, unbroken! CD Tenerife 1 Numancia 1 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review

TENERIFE were rendered shellshocked in the first half-hour of their clash with Numancia: a penalty given against them, one for them denied, and a player sent off! There was plenty of ammunition for those who believe mainland refs have a downer on Tenerife, because Numancia played a bruising, and, at times, brutal game. But the spirit and resilience of the Santa Cruz players gave them a deserved share of the spoils. Coach Pep Marti shuffled the pack again, dropping

striker Malbasic, but it was good to see Juan Villar leading the line. Visiting keeper Campos robbed Villar of the ball in the opening minutes, but there was better news from a corner. Aitor Sanz swung the ball in with precision, and Carlos Ruiz rose to glance his header into the Numancia net. Under 10 minutes later, referee Cuadra Fernandez incensed the 12,289 crowd with a booking and a penalty against Aitor Sanz. As Numancia pressed in the box, Carlos backed into Sanz, but the ref ruled that Sanz had held him and pointed to the spot, from where Guillermo equalised. There could have been a home penalty as well. Tayron was tackled on the edge of the Numancia box, and his legs were just inside. But he fell

CD Marino

outwards; no spot-kick! So much for honesty. It was all hotting up and Eigezebal gave Villar a sharp dig, one of several he received. Sanz raced to intercept Valcarce and tackled well to take the ball, the Numancia player falling quickly and auditioning for an Oscar. Sanz is a card magnet, and always in the thick of the action. Maybe officials let that affect their calls, but the player can feel hard done by for his second booking and dismissal. Oh yes, it would get even worse. Montañes, crunched in a two-player Numancia sandwich, was clearly in pain. He had to go off with an ankle injury, which will keep him out for up to three months. Bryan Acosta, who replaced him, showed more of his close control on the ball, and Aveldaño, a surprise centre-back

pick ahead of Jorge, was having a great game in defence, and supporting set-piece chances. It’s best not to think of some of the words whizzing around Tenerife’s changing-room at halftime, but the ref ’s ears will surely have been scorching, just like our weather! Juan Villar, into action for the second half, lasted just a couple of minutes before pulling up with a leg strain. His season has been punctuated by niggling injuries, and Malbasic took his place up front. Inaki had a golden chance to regain the home lead, but his free-kick didn’t even graze the bar. His fellow full-back, Luis Perez, stood firm at the other end to clear well from Valcarce. Captain Suso made his return from suspension,

taking over from Tayron, and he soon found room inside his marker. But a weak shot didn’t trouble the keeper. Keeper Dani Hernandez had a couple of worrying moments, which seem to be creeping into his game lately. A scrambled challenge on Higinio drew an appeal from the player, but, thankfully, the ref had exhausted his drama quota for the evening. Both keepers earned their pay in the dying minutes, Campos with a double save, and Dani with a smart collect at a striker’s feet. Despite Tenerife slipping to ninth place, this was a good point from a tough game. Coach Pep Marti will round up his dwindling group of fit players for the 7pm league game at Lorca, tomorrow (Saturday), and Thursday’s Copa del Rey, first-leg tie at home against Espanyol.

IT was a pleasing Bank Holiday Thursday for CD Marino, who returned from Fuerteventura with a hard-fought draw against Cotillo.

A clean-sheet is always encouraging, and Marino were also able to blood another player from their talented, youthdevelopment programme. Camil Azzan took to the field after half-time, replacing forward Pedro. He was not overawed, and the experience will help to further enhance his reputation at the club.

Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 5 Santa Teresa 1

CONFIDENCE is high again in Granadilla after Tenerife’s sparkling home display in San Isidro on Sunday.

The ladies, following their stuttering start to the season, have found their best form, and they were soon ahead from an Estella header. Maria Jose Perez, who has settled back in with her home team after a season away, turned the clock back with a vintage performance, the first of her two goals making it 2-0 after just 13 minutes. Santa Teresa did find some resistance by pulling a goal back with a Estafa marker from just outside the penalty area. But the free-flowing

play which served Granadilla well last season was back to the fore. And Maria Jose restored the two-goal cushion in the second half with a welldirected header. Tenerife could have switched off a little, but they kept up the pace right

through to the final whistle. Estella added her second goal, and Paloma rounded it off nicely with the fifth as they entered the final few minutes. That moves a delighted Granadilla side up to 10th spot in Spain’s Premier League.

Top flights of the Phoenix A CLASH between two top teams resulted in Phoenix Bar taking the honours with a 5-3 scoreline at Spear Chuckers, after winning the trebles. Maximums were the order of the day as Pas O Nadas A visited Picasso’s, and, thanks to Stevie’s 180, Wattie’s fourth in as many weeks and another from Daddy Cool, of course, they contributed hugely towards a 7-1 win. Scruffy Macs travelled to The Tavern A and came away with the same score to keep them top of league. But they are still being chased by Boothen, who welcomed The Loch-In A. Despite a 180 from Wayne, the visitors threw some brilliant darts to claim their

7-1 win. Palms Pool Bar found themselves in a brilliant position against Ourplace Playboys when they were 4-2 up. But the Silencio boys upped their game to win the last two and claim a creditable draw. Waterfall hosted Gaffers, looking to break their winless streak. Sadly, though, Gaffers showed no sympathy and took home a 6-2 victory. Nauta Nomads nearly sprang a surprise when top-two team Sandy’s called in. They had a chance to win, but a last-game success helped Sandy’s to a 4-4 draw. Another away team, Bar Leones, also pinched the trebles and a 4-4 scoreline at Marilyn’s B. But Marilyn’s A had the misfortune to lose out in the trebles when they went to Pas O Nadas B, ending up on the wrong side of a 5-3 result.

Basketball

Running out of 2017

Racking up the baskets E U R O P E A N Champions League glory is back on the agenda for Iberostar Tenerife, who have bagged their first win of the qualifying campaign.

SIGN up, train up, and turn up for the second San Silvestre 5km Golden Mile run, on Sunday, 31st December around the streets and beach-front, where Los Cristianos meets Playa de Las Americas. Last year’s initial run proved to be a superb afternoon for runners, supporters and spectators. All agegroups had their chance to shine, and each runner received a medal for competing. Applications are open now:

just eight euros up to 4th December, or 10 euros after that. The cut-off point is 28th December. On the big day, the children’s categories will start from 3 pm, and the adults start an hour later. It’s a fun event, and several Santas were spotted running last year in their red outfits. Book online at www. gesportcanarias.com - or at the Los Cristianos sports hall, by the open-air pool, or call them on 922 792 916 between 9am-10pm.

They beat Germany’s MHP Reisen 82-72 on Tuesday night in La Laguna. And, after losing their first fixture narrowly, it was a much more comfortable night, thanks to a solid squad performance. The first two quarters, won 19-15 and 29-13, built up a healthy lead, so they were able to see off a Reisen fightback with final quarters of 11-19 and 23-25. Tim Abromaitis topped the scoring with 15 points, and captain Nico Richotti added 13. But Man of the Match went to Fran Vazquez, not just for his 12 points, but also for his overall contribution.

Tenerife had already showed their determination against Joventut in the Catalonian city of Badalona last Sunday. They fought back from a 13-26, first-quarter mauling, and demonstrated their power with three straight quarter wins, 20-15, 25-15 and 18-17, to collect a 76-73 league victory. Mateusz Ponikta was again the star with 21 points,

while Fran Vazquez had one of his best games in the yellow vest, weighing in with 16 points. It is important for Tenerife to keep up with the leaders in the league, and not be distracted by the European Champions League. Tomorrow (Saturday), at home to Bilbao at 6pm in La Laguna, they will be looking to build on their seventhplace league position.
