Big shock for car thief Continued from Front Margaret, a much-loved member of the San Blas Anglican congregation, as is her dog Suzie, had parked her car a few feet away from a postbox by The Palms complex, on Golf del Sur. She walked over to post a card and recalled: “It was 8.30 in the morning, and was already a beautiful day. It was so quiet, with not a soul in sight. “But, as I turned back, I noticed a chap crossing the road at an angle, and I just knew he was heading for the car. Sure enough,
he jumped straight into the driver’s seat (foolishly, I’d left the keys in the ignition) and I saw red.” She admitted: “I don’t know what came over me. I wrenched the passenger door open, grabbed hold of his hair with one hand and punched him in the face several times with the other. “I was screaming like a banshee as I hit him, and then a taxi-driver pulled up to help me. Two other chaps, Ian and James, also appeared, and they were a great help. “One of them took

photographs on his mobile of the man, after he had wriggled free from the car and made his escape. “And when I told them I didn’t have time to report the incident to the police because I had an important engagement, they agreed to do it for me, and took all my details. “I have an automatic car, and I don’t think the guy knew how it worked. I had parked pretty close to a car in front of me, so he couldn’t have driven straight off, which worked in my favour as well.” Just two weeks earlier, Margaret, from Accrington, Lancashire, had “practised” her banshee screeching on a family of squatters, who had pitched up at her new, Golf del Sur home, which is being renovated. “I’m living nearby, in a friend’s holiday apartment, because of the upheaval, and I popped in one day to check the mailbox,” she recalled. “But I noticed the front door was slightly ajar. “I went to examine it, and saw a well-dressed
young man standing in the doorway. I asked him what he was doing there, and he said, arrogantly, ‘We live here. We moved in three weeks ago’. “I was livid…how dare they impose themselves on my home, I thought. And I told him so. “An older woman and a couple of younger girls also appeared as I pushed the door open and saw sleeping bags all over the floor. “I was so angry that I screamed at them to get out. I think they were Romanian, but I couldn’t be sure, and the woman said they had nowhere to go. “I shouldered my way past her and started throwing their belongings into the garden, all the time ranting at them. To my surprise and relief, they started packing up their bits and pieces, loaded them into a car and drove off.” After this initial shock, followed by the car episode, Margaret said she sat indoors for three days, shaking at the thought of what had happened to her
in the space of a fortnight. “My behaviour really shocked me,” she said. “I have never, ever been like that, and it really concerned me. But, after a while, I came to terms with it, and, fortunately, I had the strength to deal with both incidents. I’m proud of myself for protecting my property.” But she insists the story is not about her. “It serves as a warning to others, that they must lock their cars wherever they stop, if only for a few seconds,” she said. “I still can’t believe it, but I even left my handbag and door keys on the passenger seat.” As if this weren’t enough disruption to her life, Margaret was widowed in August when her husband, Ron Eastwood, died, tragically, of cancer, following their wedding the previous December in Gibraltar. “I just know he was guiding me from above, and I know he would have been proud of me” she said. “I miss him terribly, but he is watching over me.”
Drugged-up driver hammers two kids A FEMALE recruiter for terrorist group ISIS has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in Cataluyna, with FBI help. Spain’s Interior Ministry says the 21-year-old was captured by the Guardia after, allegedly, recruiting other women to join ISIS in the Middle East. She is also accused of self-radicalisation by consuming IS propaganda, and establishing online
networks with other jihadi activists, most of whom are also women. Guardia Civil officers arrested the woman on Wednesday morning in Catalunya’s coastal town of Palamos, in an operation with the FBI. She was believed to be part of a global network, which police have been dismantling, slowly but surely, for two years. Since Spain raised its national security alert to one step below the maximum in mid-2015, Spanish police have arrested 206 suspected jihadi activists.
A WOMAN driver aged 28, under the influence of drugs, careered into two young brothers on a zebra-crossing outside the gates of their Santa Cruz primary school, inflicting serious injuries on one of them. They were with their father when the incident happened, at 8.30am on Tuesday, and the children, aged four and six, stood no chance. The six-year-old, who was transferred to the university hospital after suffering severe trauma, is on the mend. But his brother, despite recovering from a heart attack in Candelaria
Hospital, is still in a bad way. Needless to say, the woman was arrested by police
immediately and is being held in custody, while further investigations are pursued.

‘Loyal’ Mossos officers could be facing the axe THE Spanish Government is believed to be planning to rid those officers in Catalonia’s police force (Mossos d’Esquadra), who support the independence movement, and replace them with National Police officers.
It follows Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s announcement that he will invoke Article 155 of the constitution, enabling the Government to impose direct rule on the embattled region. The Senate is scheduled to vote on whether to implement the decision some time today (Friday). Among other proposals, Rajoy wants the Senate to approve the removal of Catalan President Carles Puigdemont and his cabinet from office immediately. Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria also claims that one of the Government’s first acts, “when they take charge of the region”, will be to see the political control of the Mossos taken over by the Interior Ministry. Spanish Government
spokesman Iñigo Mendez de Vigo has also said the Government plans to use the Mossos to “restore the law” if there is any unrest when Article 155 is invoked. According to Spanish media sources, many Catalan officers are reluctant to employ the forceful techniques used by riot police during the 1st October referendum.
Trade unions also revealed that several Mossos agents submitted sick notes, suddenly, to get out of working that day to avoid all the anticipated violence. Major Josep Lluis Trapero, the Mossos Police Chief, is under investigation for failing to carry out orders from Spanish authorities to prevent the unauthorised referendum.
As well as finding a replacement for Major Trapero, the National Police and Guardia Civil officials are understood to be searching for a new leadership structure for the Mossos. It is because they feel that many officers will pledge their allegiance to the Catalan authorities if Madrid does impose direct
rule, which seems likely. In other areas, Catalan Deputy First Minister Oriol Junqueras (Esquerra, ERC) told Associated Press on Wednesday evening that the Spanish Government had left Catalonia “no other option” but to proclaim a new republic. But Junqueras stressed that he was speaking as leader of his Republican Catalan Left party, and not as a member of the regional government. Meanwhile, on the same day, Spanish Defence Minister María Dolores de Cospedal, said: “It is now time to defend the Spanish Constitution, which we have built together over the past 40 years.” She added: “It is not the time for doubts, or sitting on the fence. The times when our history is tested are when we have to respond with responsibility, and with the rule of law.” But Catalan First Minister Carles Puigdemont posted a message on Instagram that evening, shortly before meeting his regional government and governing party (Junts Pel Sí) MPs. It read: “We will not lose time with those who have already decided to crush Catalan self-government. Onwards!”
Banking on the activists Spain climbs
expat ladder
CATALAN activists have flocked to withdraw cash as a protest against those banks who moved their headquarters from the region, following the independence referendum. Some protesters took 155 euros as a symbolic nod to the government invoking Article 155 of the constitution to impose direct rule on Catalonia. Others withdrew 1,714 euros to reference the year 1714, when the city of Barcelona fell to King Felipe V’s troops. Two influential, proindependence groups, the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Omnium Cultural, encouraged people on social media to take “peaceful direct action” to protest the measures taken by Spanish Prime Minister
A SURVEY by the Expat Insider ranks Spain 10th in the top destinations for expats in 2017.
Mariano Rajoy and his Government. Groups leaders Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cuixart were detained on Monday, accused of inciting rebellion throughout the referendum proceedings. Independence activists were encouraged to take money out from the five main bank chains, in particular
CaixaBank and Sabadell, who announced plans to move their headquarters from Barcelona over fears that the region would split from Spain. The banks are among 900 companies who are packing up shop and moving from Catalonia, amid fears that the unrest could impact business.
The country moved six places up from last year because of the excellent quality of life, friendly population, low costs and a slowly improving economy. One British respondent said simply: “We love Spain. The climate and the lifestyle suit us perfectly.” Yet Spain has the worst ranking regarding work, with two-thirds reporting it unsatisfactory. The survey asked 12,500 expats from 166 nationalities to rank their favourite countries according to family, friends and work. Bahrain, Costa Rica and Mexico, respectively, proved to be the best countries in which to live.
Bahrain was chosen No.1 because expats said settling into life on the Middle East island was easy because residents can get by without learning the local language. But the UK slipped 21 places from last year to 54, because of increased personal finance, the cost of living and difficulty settling in. Yet career prospects there were regarded favourably.
No more paperwork
ARONA Council will next month begin digitalising all administrative procedures, and, eventually, the paperwork will disappear, nearly a year earlier than required by legislation. Along with many other councils, Arona Town Hall already allows internet contact by the public for many daily procedures.

Brexit won’t harm Paragliders rescued Camper-van’s our expat brigade from the wilderness lorry-load of woe
SPAIN’S Foreign Minister says British expats will be allowed to continue living in Spain, even if the UK cannot strike a Brexit deal with the European Union. Alfonso Dastis (pictured), who was appearing on BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show, said: “I do hope there will be a deal. “But if there is no deal, we will make sure that the lives of ordinary people who are in Spain, the UK people, are not disrupted. “As you know, the relationship between the UK and Spain is a very close one, in
terms of economic relations, and also social exchanges.” The Foreign Minister added: “Over 17 million Brits come to Spain every year, and many of them live or retire here. And we want to keep it that way, as much as possible.” Spain hosts the largest number of British citizens living in the EU (308,805) and just over onethird are aged 65 and over, according to the Office for National Statistics. Prime Minister Theresa May is continuing to negotiate withdrawal issues with the EU, including a financial settlement, expats’ rights and Irishborder issues.
TWO paragliders, who found themselves in trouble at La Quinta, Adeje, late on Monday afternoon, were rescued by an emergency helicopter after escaping from a bad fall with minimum injuries. The 50-year-old Frenchman and a British woman, 30, plummeted in their twoseater paraglider into an awkward area to access. Firemen worked along-
side the Canarian Government’s searchand-rescue team, who hitched a ride in the helicopter to assist. The Frenchman suffered trauma injuries to his leg, while the female had leg abrasions. But the injuries were not that serious. Having escaped from the secluded area, they were met by the Emergency Services and transferred to Hospiten Sur for a full check-up.
Three killed in hurricane THE Republic of Ireland was left devastated in the wake of Hurricane Ophelia as it swept in last week, leaving at least three dead. A woman in her fifties was killed by a falling tree in Waterford, and a man in his thirties died in Tipperary while trying to clear a tree with a chainsaw. A third person also perished while driving near Dundalk, when a tree fell on the car.
Simulated fuel spill could aid port staff
LOS Cristianos port officials hosted a mock simulation of an accidental fuel leak on Wednesday morning.
Local people collaborated with various response groups to get the show on the way. The plan consisted of a scenario of fuel leaking from a boat as it was docking. And the simulation also required the deployment of an antipollution barrier, along with the activation of maritime rescue vessels and the port authority’s own rescue service. These type of drills enable the port staff to be trained in a theoretical and practical manner. They increase the level of co-ordination and improve the detection of errors, while advancing the awareness needed in the fight against marine pollution.
More than 360,000 homes were said to have been left without power, as the hurricane moved across the border towards Ulster.
IF you are going to park your camper-van illegally, at least make sure it’s not in the Los Cristianos Port car park. The authorities there don’t mess about, as the owner of this vehicle discovered!
More expats now working in Spain NEARLY 5,000 additional expat workers made Social Security payments last month, which was a 0.2% increase on August. And, says the Employment Ministry, it means that 1,853,108 foreigners now have a legitimate job in Spain. It is good news, following the collective loss of more than 27,000 contributors to Social Security during July and August. Of the total number of immigrants registered in Social Security at
the end of September, 1,548,400 were listed as employed, 299,596 as self-employed, 4,972 were working at sea, and 140 in the coal industry. Biker crash injury A BIKER was injured after colliding with a car on the TF-47 in Armeñime. He suffered a bad leg injury and other minor wounds. P a r a m e d i c s stabilised his leg and took him to Hospiten Sur for further treatment.

Dodgy Los Cristianos bridge to be replaced THE rusty old bridge, at the entrance to Los Cristianos on Avenida Chayofita, has been condemned. Plans are being made to replace it shortly because it does not meet European Community standards. Despite Arona Council spending more than 600,000 euros on the out-of-date crossing years ago, the construction did not comply with any regulations, and safety conditions were not, apparently, considered. Yet people with mobility problems, plus mums and dads with small children and prams, have a right to cross the dual-
carriageway safely. But there is no lighting, the steep ramps are unsafe and the bridge, basically, was designed poorly. The Council says the replacement footbridge “will measure just 50 metres more each side, creating a pedestrian walkway integrated into the landscape”. It will be accessible
and illuminated, with a minimum increase in length, which, in total, will allow better access to schools and sports centres in the area. Even better news, for the Council anyway, is that it shouldn’t cost more than 750,000 euros to replace the current bridge, and it could be completed in a four-month period.
People-smugglers are busted at last THE two ringleaders of a group, conducting migranttrafficking to the Canary Islands, have been arrested by cops, and their lucrative racket has been busted. It has taken a threeyear National Police investigation to sort it all out, but they have now wiped out the mafia-style operation, and its gang. An international arrest-warrant for the two main culprits was issued by a Gran Canaria court in Telde, Las Palmas, and a further 30 people, believed to have
crewed boats, were taken into custody. The migrants, mostly sub-Saharan Africans, were shipped over from El Aaiún (Laayoune), capital of the disputed Western Sahara territory, which is a city recognised politically as being in Morocco. Mafia members were arrested by the Gendermerie there, while the boat crew were rounded up in Spain. They may be charged with murder, since they are believed to be directly responsible for the deaths of at least eight Africans. But the charge is likely to be reduced to manslaughter. After interviewing around 1,500 migrants, police identified the
racket leader, a Senegalese national, who, somehow, acquired and merged similar organisations, thanks to his high-level political and police contacts. It gave him a nearmonopoly over the human-trafficking “industry”. National Police found out that the 32 people arrested, part of the largest trafficking network involving the Canary Islands, were charging migrants between 500-3,000 euros per head for the perilous journey to European soil. Many had spent their entire lives saving up for the trip in the hope of finding work in Europe, and being able to send money home to keep their families from starvation.
No wonder the party fell flat! SEVERAL young men broke into an empty Callao Salvaje villa last Friday for an illegal party… and they even posted the event on social media. But the Guardia Civil and Local Police prevented the celebration,

detaining two Canarians, of the five suspects involved. The others simply fled. The authorities, initially alerted that the property had been broken into, suspected a robbery. However, on searching the villa, which has a pool and ajacuzzi, they found alcoholic drinks set up on the terrace, and party equipment.

Building your pension pot
You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have:
• You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commitments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot.
Do you know you get tax relief on payments you make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot.

Schools fight to beat the bullies
Read all about it!
ADEJE public library, under Councillor Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, celebrated International Libraries Day throughout the week with a series of activities in the Cultural Centre. They were designed to encourage reading, and promote the space as a learning tool. On Tuesday, there was a 3D pop-up, storytelling workshop for children aged five and upwards. The following day, it was time for the younger
children’s story-telling, in Spanish, with music and creative games, to help the babies evolve their communicative skills. Yesterday evening (Thursday), Felipe Ortín’s new novel, “Idus de Julio” was presented to the public. Councillor Afonso Ruiz said: “We are delighted to have had these events taking place in Adeje in celebration of International Library Day. “They have helped promote reading, and have also underlined its importance in the growth of a healthy society. We believe it is an investment in the future of Adeje.”
Guardia go nuts over organised crimewave SCHOOL bullies beware! Adeje Council has launched a series of workshops in the borough’s secondary schools to deal with bullying of all kinds.
It is being overseen by the Departments of Health Protection and Equality Politics, with Councillors Amada Trujillo Bencomo and Carmen Lucía Rodríguez at the helm. The aim is to make students aware of sexual diversity, and provide them with the tools to help prevent school bullying, gender violence, homophobia, lesbophobia, transphobia and sexual abuse, etc.
The Councillors said: “One of the tools we need to eradicate phobias and discriminatory aggression of any kind is education. “This is why we are continuing to offer these workshops in secondary schools, because this is where the focus of the problem has been identified. And we have seen direct and indirect examples of this kind of bullying.” In the first workshops, students are being taught to help in the normalisation of sexual realities. In other words, they are talking about how, in the student body, there will be people who are heterosexual, gay, lesbian, trans-sexual or bisexual. The students will also be told that each and every
person has a right to be open about his or her sexuality without fear of repercussions. The youngsters are encouraged to speak about the examples of intimidation and lack of respect, as well as ways in which people do bully, but can be stopped. The scourge of gender violence is also discussed. More than 40 women have already lost their lives in Spain this year at the hands of a partner, or expartner. Values of equality and problems with prejudice and sexual-stereotyping are also being discussed. The three workshops are taking place in secondary schools at Los Olivos and El Galeón.
GUARDIA Civil officers have seen off a major crimewave, which sparked more than 100 burglaries and terrorised an entire community. The officers have arrested 21 people, 11 of them under-18 minors, and have seized goods worth 60,000 euros, weapons… and more than two tons of Spain’s popular almonds! The crimes took place in the Valencian areas of Comarca de la Hoya de Buñol and Camp del Turia, and those detained comprised Bulgarian and Spanish nationals, including seven women. The now-disbanded group were part of a larger gang, involved in breakingand-entering properties, cultivation and sale of drugs, stealing almonds, animals and electricity, and also hoarding weapons.
The gang-leader selected targets for the minors, and studied the comings and goings of various business owners and residents. It means the youngsters could often break into properties, knowing the owners were elsewhere. Among items recovered, many of which will be displayed publicly for identification, are mobile phones, tablets, televisions, laptops, e-books, PlayStations and games cameras, computer equipment and other electrical equipment. The Guardia also recovered stolen bicycles, jewellery, watches, baby-chairs, wheelchairs and weapons, in addition to 44 sacks of almonds, weighing 2,300kg! It is no coincidence that Spain is the second-biggest almond producer in the world.

Models cast for big beach show THE official casting of models for the “Tenerife Fashion Beach Costa Adeje” took place on Wednesday morning, when more than 50 professional models visited Siam Mall, one the event’s sponsors. The event, which preceded the beach fashion show last night (Thursday), was attended by Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira García, Economic Development Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, Siam Mall manager Hugo Gil, and also Edgar Magdalena, Technical Director of Tenerife Fashion Beach Costa Adeje. The Councillors highlighted the relevance of this event, “in the tourist projection of the municipality”, and
how it promotes the fashion sector. They also pointed out:
“The catwalk opens a path to economic diversification, that links
tourism and commercial promotion, and shows the benefits and attractions
of our destination.” Siam Mall chief Hugo Gil said these events helped promote business sectors linked to the textile industry. He added: “Siam Mall will continue to support these initiatives, because they continue to grow the fashion and commerce sector as a tourist attraction.” Finally, Edgar Magdalena, who thanked the involvement of the Tenerife Cabildo, and Adeje Council, acknowledged the work and involvement of the group of sponsors, who participated actively in the event. He also showed his support for the group of models participating on the catwalk, as well as the different firms and design professionals. They were scheduled to meet at the Tenerife Fashion Beach Costa Adeje last night (Thursday), which began at 7pm.
Flight warning by UK airlines Trucking on trains BRITISH airlines, via their websites, are preparing to warn customers about the risks of booking flights after March 2019. The alerts will start in spring next year, if the UK Government has failed by then to break the deadlock in the Brexit negotiations. It would affect tickets to EU destinations, and up to 17 other countries, including the US, because flights to places such as America are covered under current EU regulation. If flights are grounded as a result of a “no-deal” result, airlines would compensate passengers for the cost of their flights. But any extra costs, usually covered by airlines based on EU regulations, such as compensation, would not be paid out. Air-traffic in the EU is currently governed by
the Single European Sky arrangement, which allows planes to fly without restriction from one European country to another. But for these things to continue as such, a new treaty will have to be agreed between the UK and the EU. It comes a month after UK Chancellor Philip Hammond warned MPs that all air-traffic could, “theoretically”, stop the day after Brexit.
He told a recent select committee: “It is, theoretically, conceivable that in a no-deal scenario, there will be no air-traffic moving between the UK and European Union on March 29, 2019. “But I don’t think anyone seriously believes that is where we’ll get to. So there is a range of outcomes. What we will need to do at some point is determine a realistic, worstcase scenario, which we need to plan for and invest for.” Airlines, reportedly, continue to be optimistic that a deal will be struck between Britain and the EU. But there are concerns that the Government will not approve an aviation deal, if it has to abide by certain rulings of the European Courts of Justice.
FRANCE and Spain are working together to develop “rolling highways” to help remove heavy-goods traffic from the roads, and transfer it on to the railways. The Spanish Ministry for Public Works invited tenders for rollinghighway (RH) operation projects for the Atlantic and Mediterranean rail corridors. And five proposals from rolling-stock companies have been received: three from Spain and two from France. The two governments will now consider the proposals, which, as well as technical specifications for wagons and terminals, include details of likely operating costs. They will form the basis
of interest this autumn in operating the rail service. Íñigo de la Serna, Spanish Minister for Public Works, has also discussed the connection infrastructure and transport issues affecting their two countries in meetings with France’s Transport Minister, Elisabeth Borne. Both ministers have already highlighted the economic and political commitment being made by Spain, to ensure progress on the development of the Mediterranean and Atlantic rail corridors.

nationals save Italian’s life
THE National Police saved an Italian man from bleeding to death after he stabbed himself in the leg accidentally and cut a vein. The officers covered the wound, raised his leg and applied pressure until paramedics arrived. They also helped carry the man down three flights of stairs in a blanket. The incident happened in Los Cristianos, and, initially, police were notified that a man had been stabbed in a fight. The young man was rushed to Candelaria Hospital for surgery, because the damaged vein was close to the femoral artery.

‘Kidnapped’ man who conned his own family
SPANISH police have detained a 48-year-old man in León for, allegedly, staging his own abduction to extort cash from his family in Argentina. The man sent them messages, in which he said he had been kidnapped. He also provided staged photographs, which made it appear as though
A DOUBLE tragedy occurred at La Orotava’s Playa del Bollullo beach after a trio of swimmers ignored the redflag, danger warning. Emergency services were notified at 1.39pm that all three were in trouble and needed help. One man, helped by other swimmers on the beach, managed to get out. But the other two suffered heart attacks and were airlifted by helicopter to safety. Paramedics began CPR, and, once they had touched down, ambulance medics increased the treatment to advanced CPR. Tragically, the couple were unresponsive and their deaths were confirmed. But the rescued man was taken to hospital for further treatment.

he had been beaten and had suffered facial injuries. His family made several payments to secure his “release”, said Spain’s National Police. And, after being alerted by Interpol, officers confirmed that the person receiving the payments was actually the supposed victim. The investigation began when the Spanish branch of Interpol was informed about a family in Argentina, who had reported the
kidnapping of a relative in León, Spain. The family said they had received messages through Whatsapp, with audio files and images of their relative, who had apparently been left with facial injuries after a beating. They then decided to make several payments, sending them to post offices in León in an attempt to secure his freedom. When plain-clothes police officers in the Spanish city went to spy on another
payment being collected, they confirmed that the person receiving the money was the supposed victim, who had no visible injuries. At the same time, officers were also able to observe the man making a fresh call to his relatives, in which he claimed he was “suffering greatly”. He was detained, subsequently, and police seized his mobile phone, 1,285 euros in cash and two receipts from a wire transfer company.
Complaints galore against ‘active’ three police forces MANY formal complaints have been levelled in courts across the region against all three police forces, who were active in Catalonia on 1st October, which was referendum day. Some 238 people have complained about injuries caused by the Guardia Civil or National Police, most of them (218) at one Barcelona court, and also in Amposta, l’Hospitalet de Llobregat, Manresa, Mataró, Rubí and Tarragona.
A further 20-or-so suggestions of injuries are being processed, but do not yet meet the formal requirements for a complaint. The investigations are at a preliminary state, which means the investigating judge in each case is currently receiving the complaints and attempting to identify the officers involved, before proceeding with the rest of the inquiries. At least 17 individuals have also filed complaints against the Catalan Police (Mossos) for failing to prevent the vote from taking place at polling stations, as ordered by the courts,
in Barcelona, Cerdanyola del Vallès, El Prat de Llobregat, El Vendrell, Gandesa, Gavá, La Seu d’Urgell, Lleida, Mataró, Reus, Sabadell, Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Vilanova y la Geltrú. A further 11 complaints have been made for the illegal use of personal data during the referendum, in Berga, Gavá, Granollers, Figueres, Martorell, Mataró, Reus and Terrassa. Four complaints have been received for “different police actions” in Lleida, and one each for accessing a web-voting app (Vilanova y la Geltrú), assault on the Guardia Civil (Mataró),
against the Catalan Government (El Vendrell), the search of the 112 emergency-services building in Reus (Gandesa), against the Mayor of Roses for her behaviour on 1st October (Figueres), and for the deployment of the National Police at CUP headquarters in Barcelona. One other complaint, in Gandesa, has been classified as secret, and the Catalan Government has filed a “macro” complaint against actions by the “National Police and Guardia Civil, carried out across Catalan territory throughout the whole day”.

Bristol battered by baffling break-ins
DESPITE a burglary spree sweeping Bristol, an investigation by the local daily paper has discovered that Avon and Somerset Police have disbanded their specialist unit. The Bristol Post has also uncovered shocking figures, which suggest that Avon and Somerset Police have solved just one in 10 burglary cases since 2011. And in 82% of those cases, the cops couldn’t even identify a suspect. The figures, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act (FoI), also showed that in five years, burglars have made off with stolen goods to the value of £39m, with less than 1% recovered. Andrea and her family were asleep upstairs with
her young family when men wearing balaclavas broke into her home and stole cash and cards, and even the traumatised children’s football kits. Both family cars were also taken. Andrea’s story has been repeated dozens of times across east Bristol in recent weeks: masked men break into houses at night; steal valuables and cars; family are asleep. Residents say the criminals “keep coming back for more because they’re getting away with it”. Another common theme, highlighting the recent spate of crimes, is that victims say they feel let down by the police, suggesting they have not taken individual cases seriously.
Jet2.com flyi after Monarc BUDGET airline Jet2.com has added 550,000 extra summer 2018 seats from former Monarch bases, following the collapse of its rival airline. More than 300,000 seats from Manchester, to Alicante, Antalya, Barcelona, Dalaman, Faro, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Malaga, Menorca, Mallorca and Rhodes, have been added, and two additional aircraft have been allocated. There will also be 250,000 more seats from its new Birmingham base on its routes to Tenerife, Alicante, Antalya, Crete, Dalaman, Faro, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Malaga, Mallorca, Paphos and Rome. New routes to Bodrum, Dubrovnik and Venice have also been introduced, and the number of aircraft at Birmingham airport will double, to eight. This is welcome news for the
Midlands airport because it was one of the worst hit among Monarch’s five UK bases. The carrier had ranked as Birmingham’s third-biggest operator, with 12% of the traffic. Jet2 has also revealed a total of 40,000 more seats being available from Leeds Bradford airport, with three, extra, weekly flights to Tenerife. The airline’s announcement came shortly after it had added over 100,000 seats and holidays to the most popular sun, and city, winter hotspots. Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2.com and Jet2holidays, said: “We have put over 650,000 additional seats on sale, in response to the increased demand for flights and holidays during both the summer and winter. “To support that expansion, we are increasing the size of our operation in a move which will see us introduce additional aircraft and create
hundreds of new jobs.” He added: “Britons want to get away on their welldeserved holidays, and we have responded quickly by adding more of our awardwinning flights, and Atolprotected package holidays.” But Norwegian has soured the airport’s tonic, becoming the latest airline to pull

flights from Birmingham after announcing it would cease all services to Spain. The low-cost carrier said its last flights to Tenerife, Malaga and Barcelona would take place this weekend as it reviews its UK services. “A natural part of our UK development will see some reductions in routes with
lower passenger demand, allowing us to focus on providing affordable flights on strong-performing routes,” said a Norwegian spokesperson. But as well as Jet2 providing flights to Spain, travellers can also fly there from Birmingham with Ryanair, and TUI.
And Norwegian is not the only carrier to end its relationship with Birmingham International. In July, United Airlines announced it was dropping the only scheduled service from Birmingham to the US, after poor ticket sales. Six months earlier, in January, American Airlines dropped its BirminghamNew York route after just one year. Emirates, too, has announced it is reducing the frequency of its service to Dubai, from three daily flights to two. Other routes set to end include Wizz Air’s flights to Sofia, Vueling’s to Paris Orly, and Flybe to Toulouse. However, there is some consolation for the Midlands airport, which welcomes some 11.6 million passengers a year. New budget carrier Primera Air recently launched a route from Birmingham to New York, and added Toronto this week.

Balloon bursts for cocaine smuggler
A WOMAN aged 50 has been caught trying to smuggle an astonishing 51 balloons of cocaine through Malaga airport. And, say police, the Brazilian woman had somehow hidden the balloons inside her body… in her stomach, and also her private parts. The arrest was part of an operation to combat the international drug trade, which has seen a high influx of Class A drugs coming through Malaga airport. Police have been scanning so called “hot flights” from regions like South America, and looking for anyone suspicious, who
might be transporting drugs. The woman was intercepted by National Police and Guardia Civil on her arrival at Malaga airport. When asked why she was in Spain, she was unable to answer coherently, which led cops to suspect she could have been carrying narcotics. After performing tests, with positive results, police arrested her and transferred her to a hospital centre. The majority of balloons were expelled there, where it was discovered that she had swallowed 28, and had secreted the remaining 23 inside her private parts. As a result, 306gms of cocaine were seized, and the woman was charged with drug-trafficking.

By ‘eck, Yorkshire has the best grub in world A PUB in Yorkshire has the best restaurant in the world, according to TripAdvisor, beating the finest eateries from Spain and all the other countries involved. The rankings are based on millions of customer reviews over a 12-month period, and the Black Swan in Oldstead, North Yorkshire, shot straight to the top. It’s the first time a British restaurant has been placed first in the list since it began in 2012, and it is hailed as an incredible feat, especially as it had never been listed in the rankings before. Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, in Great Milton, Oxfordshire, came second, while the Martín Berasategui in LasarteOria, north-east Spain, which was ranked first in 2015 and last year, was placed fifth. The Black Swan, which has
a Michelin star and four AA rosettes, was run by the Banks family, who bought it as a struggling village pub. Tommy and James were just 18 and 17 respectively when they took over the running of the pub after their parents stood down in 2006. Now, they run the pub together. Head chef Tommy, who is the UK’s youngest Michelinstarred chef, described it as “a huge honour”. He added: “What makes it really special is that it has been awarded because of feedback from our customers.”
The judges said: “Dishes such as squid, dressed in horseradish juice, Texel lamb with turnip and mint, and cake made from chicory root and blackcurrant, can be found on the menu, which promises a combination of amazing fresh produce straight from the garden, alongside special things that have been preserved from previous seasons.” The Banks family have lived and farmed in Oldstead for generations, and their website reads: “There’s an ‘Oldstead’ style; plenty of tradition and culture, cut through with a modern,
earthy exuberance.” Set on 2½ acres of land, virtually all of the restaurant’s fruit and vegetables are grown on-site, or on their parents’ farm down the road, where back-up beetroot, Jerusalem artichokes and potatoes are available. The TripAdvisor website describes their restaurant as: “A tantalising trip for the taste buds. This restaurant is truly a box of delights. The flavours, combinations of ingredients and skill in
putting together the menu, are joyous.” But Tommy admitted: “We had no idea what we were doing when we first took over, and we’d just invite our mates round to get drunk.” The Fat Duck, in London, was 12th on the list, giving the UK three in the top 20. Spain has two top-10 restaurants, fifth-placed Martín Berasategui, and Girona’s Celler de Can Roca, in 10th spot.
Wanted man still making his mark POLICE hunting fugitive Mark Acklom, one of Britain’s most wanted men, are concerned about his two young daughters. Acklom, 44, fled his Spanish home last year, allegedly, after conning a British woman out of her 953,000 euros (£850,000) life-savings. His Spanish wife, Maria Yolanda Ros Rodriguez, 47, is believed to have left with him, along with their children, aged six and eight. A year ago, Acklom and Rodriguez were traced to Murcia, where they ran a property-selling company. “We believe Acklom and his wife are in the company of their two daughters,” said Detective Inspector Adam Bunting, of
Avon and Somerset Police. “We believe they will be enrolled at an international, feepaying school on the continent.” The two girls had attended Murcia’s El Limonar private school, in the village of El Palmar. “They’ve been uprooted from their family, away from their friends, and away from their school overnight,” added DI Bunting. “They didn’t have
a chance to say goodbye to their friends. As they are living on the run with their father, who is a wanted fugitive, we have significant concerns for their well-being.” Acklom, who has gone by the name Marc Ros Rodriguez, was photographed in Zurich in May with Spanish scammer Jose Manuel Costas Estevez. The British conman had been jailed three times in Spain.

THE Canarian Government’s Presidential Office, in Santa Cruz, hosted Loro Parque’s “Premio Gorila” 2016 award ceremony last Friday, during which the Versele-Laga company was rewarded with this prestigious recognition.
The Belgian corporation is an internationally-known manufacturer of highquality, food-and-care brands for animals and pets. This event marked its 14th annual ceremony, which aims at recognising exceptional performance, environmental responsibility and active implementation of the strategies towards the sustainable use of resources. It took place in the main Auditorium of the Presidential Office, attended by almost 300 guests. Among those there were regional, insular and local authorities, as well as civilian, military and consular officials, together with business representatives. Loro Parque President Wolfgang Kiessling stressed the importance of VerseleLaga’s work, because the company sponsors Loro Parque Fundación in its efforts dedicated to the conservation of biodiversity. Versele-Laga’s principles match those of the Loro Parque philosophy, which is highly important in a world where human population is increasing disproportionately to the number of natural resources. As a consequence, the natural habitats of the many wild animals are deteriorating quickly, which, sadly, leads to many of the species disappearing. There is more than one reason why Versele-Laga has been awarded with “Premio

Gorila 2016”, and the company’s representative, Lode Versele, said it was “really proud to be one of the main Loro Parque Fundación sponsors”. He spoke of how “Loro Parque’s vision about the conservation of nature was aligned to that of his company”, which has collaborated with the Fundación for 15 years. And Lode Versele considers the labour of scientists, and of those who love and dedicate their efforts to nature, as key for its preservation. Among many other initiatives, the company has also been supporting the Fundación financially as a
way of contributing to their cause. Versele-Laga began with Prudent Versele, a visionary entrepreneur, who started to produce and sell nutrition products for cattle on a small scale in 1932. Less than five years later, in 1937, he built his first feedproducing plant for cattle in Deinze, Belgium, to meet the demand. The following years were successful, with the factory expanding further, leading to its recognition as one of the most modern and best performing plants of the time. The passionate employees, who worked for VerseleLaga, soon convinced the Versele family to develop
mixes for racing pigeons as well. This was soon followed by products for other sporting animals and pets, such as birds, farm animals, horses and dogs. Since the 1970s, animals, increasingly, became part of the family, with more and more birds, rodents, dogs and cats being taken into people’s homes. Versele-Laga follows all the market developments closely, accompanying them with new investments. Thus, it can provide increasingly-better answers to the needs of the pets and performance animals, which is why its bond with Loro Parque is so strong.
Officers from the Guardia Civil’s Seprona branch found five bracelets at a mediaeval market in Soria, while others were discovered in Zaragoza during the annual Fiesta del Pilar celebrations. The intense red-andblack bracelets are made with abrin seeds, which can cause hallucinations, vomiting and even death. The seeds, also known as “Indian liquorice” or “ladybird seed”, are, say officers, potentially lethal. No antidote exists for abrin, and just three micrograms of the toxin in the blood can lead to death. The major symptoms of abrin poisoning depend on the route of exposure and the dose received, though many organs could be affected in severe cases, including the kidneys, liver, adrenal glands and central nervous system. Seprona officers point out that the bracelets are even dangerous to touch because the toxin can be introduced into the body in small doses, through the skin. Last July, a score of bracelets, amulets and key rings were detected in a flea market in Llerena, Badajoz. And three years ago at a Gran Canaria market, the Guardia seized 184 pendants, 100 bracelets, 63 necklaces, 10 rosaries and 5,525 seeds for manufacturing costume jewellery.

Online holiday firm logs off for last time
A POPULAR online holiday company, selling packages to Spain and around the world, ceased trading last Friday.
In a brief statement on its website, the ABTA and ATOL-protected company Chadwell Travel announced: “Chadwell Travel TA as a1travel.com have, regrettably, ceased trading. “If you have a forward booking that is due to travel in the next seven days, please contact the CAA at https://www.caa.co.uk/ Our-work/About-us/ Contact-us/ The company was founded in January 1978 “to offer the cheapest holidays online” to all hotspots across Europe, including Spain, and beyond. It specialised in allinclusive packages, from 3-star to 5-star deluxe, and, only a week earlier, it was offering an “amazing” deal for next year’s Spanish Formula 1 Grand Prix, with a 4-star hotel plus F1 tickets and track transfers, from £399 per person. Last week’s failure of Chadwell Travel could well be the first of several “after-shocks” following the demise of Monarch, according to an industry expert. The warning comes from Martin Alcock, director of Travel Trade Consultancy, who said: “Competition in the short-haul
beach-holiday market has been intense this year, and margins are very thin, so it doesn’t take much in the way of extra costs to nudge operators into financial problems. “Sadly, the Monarch failure hit the travel sector like an earthquake, saddling lots of companies with the cost of replacing flights at a point in the year when cash is most under pressure. “I fear we’ll be seeing further after-shocks over the next few months, as more operators struggle to deal with the consequences of replacing flights, refunding customers and repaying the Civil Aviation Authority for the Monarch repatriation exercise during October.” Essex-based Chadwell Travel, which also traded as A1 Travel, in Ilford, folded with 6,000 forward bookings and “several thousand” customers abroad, according to the CAA. It is believed that the company fell victim to the knock-on effects of the Monarch Group’s failure earlier this month. The CAA says over 18,000 A1 Travel and Chadwell Travel clients will be protected under the Air Travel Organiser’s Licence scheme. Most forward bookings are being managed by Broadway Travel, but some customers, whose original booking included a Monarch flight, could be told their holiday will be refunded if an alternative flight is not
available. Alcock, who spoke earlier this month at the ABTA Convention, added: “Chadwell Travel was the 33rdlargest ATOL holder, with a licence to carry 95,000 passengers. “Normally, this would be a very expensive failure. But the CAA has appointed Broadway Travel to fulfil the forward bookings. “This will relieve some of the administrative pressure on the CAA. It should also significantly reduce the cost on the Air Travel Trust fund, because fulfilling the holidays is generally cheaper than stopping people from flying, and paying out full refunds.” Andy Cohen, CAA head of ATOL, said: “Chadwell Travel was a long-established travel business, so our thoughts go out to all those who worked for the company, at this sad time. “However, I am pleased to say that the majority of ATOL-protected customers will be able to have their wellearned holidays as planned. “Those ATOL-protected customers currently abroad can also have the peace of mind that they will be able to complete their holidays and return home when they had originally planned.” The CAA advised customers, set to depart in the next week, to telephone Broadway Travel on 0191 600 0546, email help@ broadwaytravel.com or go to www.atol.org.uk.

GBP/EUR fluctuates
By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking for over the next couple of weeks. The past fortnight has seen the GBP/EUR exchange rate fluctuating sharply, bouncing between lows of 1.1084 euros, and highs of 1.1280. The EUR/GBP hit a high of £0.9021 during the middle of the last fortnight, and started the period around a low of £0.8865. EUR/ USD, meanwhile, peaked at US$1.1854, but is now trending around a low of US$1.1734. It’s been a disappointing couple of weeks for the pound, with many more periods of losses than gains. Markets ignored the positive manufacturing and construction output data released on the 10th, because the day’s trade data showed that the UK’s trade deficit had widened to an all-time high of -£14.24 billion. A survey by the Bank of England (BoE) found that UK banks were planning to rein-in access to credit, by the largest amount since
the financial crisis. While this is a positive move, from the point of view of tackling unstable debt, it is also a worry for those who are fuelling spending with borrowing, and, therefore, keeping the economy afloat. Last week saw the release of UK inflation, wages, retail sales and governmentborrowing data. Inflation was strong, but markets were beginning to doubt whether policymakers at the Bank of England (BoE) would actually hike interest rates. Wage growth showed a decline in real pay for the sixth month in a row, and retail sales fell much further than expected. Friday’s borrowing figures helped the pound to recover some of the week’s earlier losses, however, as
the deficit recorded last month was the smallest for a September since the financial crisis. The US dollar didn’t provide much movement for the GBP/USD exchange rate over the past two weeks, as markets kept it largely flat, on the back of sky-high hopes of an interest-rate hike in December. Odds of tightening have climbed to over 91%. Even fears over the potential for Catalonia to split away from Spain failed to particularly hamper the euro. The region declared independence, but suspended the move to allow the Spanish government to negotiate. However, Madrid has, instead, moved to impose direct rule on the region, and oust the local
government. There isn’t a huge amount of UK data out this week, but markets will be focused on next week’s BoE monetary-policy decision. The expectation is that policymakers will vote to hike interest rates, but markets aren’t as confident as they were. Much of the euro trajectory for the next few weeks will be decided by Thursday’s European Central Bank (ECB) monetary-policy meeting. Markets want to see the ECB decide to taper quantitative easing, and whether they do, or by how much, will affect the longterm outlook for the euro. There is plenty of high-tier, US economic data set for release over the coming fortnight. Next week’s Federal Open Market
Committee (FOMC) monetary-policy committee meeting will also be highly influential. Markets aren’t expecting any changes to interest rates, but they will be watching closely for signs that a hike in December is still on the table. Helping property buyers THE island of Tenerife, in the archipelago of the Canaries, is, for many reasons, an ideal spot for a holiday home.
Lupain Estate Agents can offer you an extensive range of properties for sale in the south of Tenerife, to fit any budget. The first, and, probably, the main reason why holiday-makers invest in Tenerife, as well as so many international property investors, is the mild, all-year climate. The geographic location of this island, lying in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of West Africa, offers its residents warm weather, all year round.
Because of this, the beaches in the south of Tenerife are crowded all year round, but the island also offers more than just beaches. Strong winds on the east coast offer great wind-gliding, especially in the winter months. For this reason, there is an upbeat and high demand for rentals, and properties for sale, in El Medano. This all-year weather offers another excellent benefit to people who invest in
Tenerife properties. You have the opportunity to rent your holiday apartment to the millions of visitors who come to the island, all year round. The high demand of tourists has seen a subsequent increase in rental rates, so it’s a great time to buy. Your property can bring in rental income throughout the whole year, enabling you to benefit from higher returns on your initial investment than investors
on the Spanish mainland. In places such as France, Italy and mainland Spain, you can only rent holiday homes for a few, summer months each year. Another benefit is that you can live in and personally use your property during the winter months, and then advertise it for rentals during the summer, to cover the expenses of community fees and utility bills. As the Canary Islands are part of Spain, Tenerife enjoys all the benefits and security offered by the European Union. This means that property buyers are protected, and all sales are done through a notary system which verifies and checks that there are no encumbrances. This is not the case when
you buy outside the EU, and many risks are involved when investing in properties in countries and territories outside the union. To find the right property in Tenerife is simple; just contact Lupain Estate Agents, inform them of your requirements, and leave them to do the rest. They have a large portfolio of properties for sale, which you can view directly on www.lupain.com Our property database is updated, daily, granting you access to all new properties on the market, as soon as they become available. Lupain Properties is one of the largest, and most experienced, estate agents in Tenerife, having sold over 1,500 properties in the last 14 years.

Mark Chapman presents live coverage of the opening game of the 2017 Rugby League World Cup as England meet 10-time winners Australia in Melbourne. Reigning champions Australia start the tournament as strong favourites, and they have reached 13 out of 14 finals since its inauguration in 1954. The World Cup is also likely to provide the swansong for the Roo’s record point-scorer Johnathan Thurston, who is one of several superstars in a side of unrelenting talent. England’s hopes of success in the competition will rest largely on their own global heavyweight Sam Burgess, with the team hoping to make up for the disappointment of missing out on the Four Nations final in 2016 after effectively being knocked out by Australia, who went on to lift the title. England are led by Australian Wayne Bennett, one of the NRL’s most decorated coaches and a man with intimate knowledge of their illustrious opponents. Commentary comes from BBC rugby league correspondent Dave Woods. Mark Chapman and guests will give reaction and discuss all of the talking points in a forum on the Red Button from 1200.

For times of urgent need, there are her emergency Brownies, and she finds a new use for a spiralizer.
One hundred years ago, just 67 words on a single sheet of paper lit a fire in the Holy Land, igniting the most intractable conflict of modern times. The Balfour Declaration was the first time the British government endorsed the establishment of ‘a national home for the Jewish people’ in Palestine. While many Palestinians see it as a betrayal, many Israelis believe it was the foundation stone of modern Israel and the salvation of the Jews. The legacy of the declaration is one that BBC reporter Jane Corbin has watched unfold over the last 30 years - charting the conflict on both sides. But it’s also a story that Jane has a personal connection to. One of her own ancestors, Leo Amery, a British politician and Cabinet Minister, played a key part in drafting the original declaration and then oversaw Britain’s governance of Palestine in the 1920s. Now, on a journey starting in her home village, Jane explores what Leo did and whether the aspirations of The Balfour Declaration - for both sides to live peacefully and prosper together - were doomed to inevitable failure. Or is there still hope of a peaceful solution in the Holy Land?
In the first episode, Gino is starting his travels on the famous Amalfi Coast, experiencing both its glamour as well as revealing its hidden side. The Amalfi Coast, often voted in the top 10 destinations to visit in Italy, stretches for 37 iconic kilometres, and includes many picturesque towns. Tonight, Gino is stopping at three of his favourites: Cetara, Minori, and, of course, the picture postcard Positano. In Minori, he visits a local family that is still producing the town’s local speciality - a unique hand-made pasta using ricotta cheese, and even gets a masterclass in making this delightfully named Ndunderi. He also visits the picturesque fishing village of Cetara, where Gino says: “This is the one place that I didn’t visit when I was younger, and I’m really excited to be here now, because it’s foodie heaven.”

Egypt’s Great Pyramid may be humanity’s greatest achievement: a skyscraper of stone built without computers or complex machinery. This super-sized tomb has fascinated historians and archaeologists for centuries, but exactly how the ancient Egyptians finished the monument and fitted its two and a half million blocks in a quarter of a century has long remained an enigma. Today the secrets of the pyramid are finally being revealed thanks to a series of new findings. At the foot of the monument, archaeologists are uncovering the last surviving relic of the pharaoh Khufu, whose tomb it is: a huge ceremonial boat buried in flat-pack form for more than 4500 years. It’s a clue that points to the important role that ships and water could have played in the pyramids’ construction.

Louis Theroux: Talking To Anorexia Sunday 29th October, BBC2, 21.00
Anorexia, the pathological fear of eating and gaining weight, is now the most deadly mental illness in the UK, affecting around one in every 250 women at some point in their lives. In recent years, the number of people being admitted to hospital because of their condition has risen dramatically. With many struggling to make a full recovery, being diagnosed with the eating disorder can sometimes mean a life-long battle. This film sees Louis Theroux embed himself in two of London’s biggest adult eating-disorder treatment facilities: St Ann’s Hospital and Vincent Square Clinic. He meets women of all ages and at various stages of their illness, accompanying them through an enforced daily routine of scheduled eating, weigh-ins and group therapy sessions. As he spends more time with patients both on and off the wards, he witnesses the dangerous power that anorexia holds over them, leaving some unsure about whether recovery is achievable or even wanted. And as Louis seeks to understand what lies behind this mysterious illness, he finds himself drawn into a complex relationship between the disorder and the person it inhabits.

Starring Adam Scott (Big Little Lies, Parks and Recreation, Hot Tub Time Machine) and Craig Robinson (The Office US, Hot Tub Time Machine, This Is The End), Ghosted is a single-camera, live action comedy about the partnership between two polar opposites: cynical sceptic (Robinson), and genius “true believer” in the paranormal (Scott), who are recruited by a secret government agency to look into the rampant “unexplained” activity in Los Angeles -- all while uncovering a larger mystery that could threaten the existence of the human race.

CW
With unprecedented access, Ross Kemp immerses himself in prison life at the sharp end in HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow. The iconic prison has a formidable reputation and has served the city for over 130 years. With privileged and exclusive access to every part of the jail, Ross discovers what it is really like to be an inmate and how prison officers handle the violence, homemade weapons and drugs, which cast a shadow across daily life behind bars. He discovers what it is like to be a lifer, meets a prisoner preparing for freedom and with trepidation, enters the wing of the prison housing sex offenders, the fastest growing group of inmates in the prison system today. Housing around 1250 prisoners over five Victorian halls, Barlinnie has built a notorious reputation. Falling out with prison officers is not recommended but falling foul of fellow inmates can make your life a living hell. Inmate Hugh reveals that you don’t grass on others, keep your mouth shut and don’t stare at anyone.

Style has no price tag
hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
“HOW much is a good haircut?” ... “What would you charge to sort out my hair?” Salon hairdressing doesn’t have a price. It’s all about what you want from your hair, your relationship with your stylist and your salon. We, at Robot, believe we offer quality hairdressing at realistic prices. It is never about what goes in the till at the end of the day; it’s keeping clients happy that
counts. Having return custom is what makes a salon busy, because clients only come back if they are happy with the results. But, keeping a salon going can be hard work; we pride ourselves on using cruelty-free quality products, and we don’t use a named brand just to impress. It has to do the job. Our prices are low, compared with most UK salons, but I’m still giving city-centre quality to my clients;
nothing has changed. Here in Tenerife, we live in a tourist culture, where you can get a cheap drink for a euro, or a full meal for less than 10. This, sometimes, works for salons, too, if that’s the sort of hairdressing you’re looking for. If you take pride in your hair, and love being pampered, then maybe we are the salon for you. If you are serious about genuine haircare, then talk to us at Robot Hair. We give free consultations either on the phone, in person or through our Facebook site. If your hair is important to you, then maybe it’s time you saw a stylist who really cares about your look.
Cooler times
By Carl pattison
LIVING in such a warm climate, it’s hard to believe that we all need a jacket at some time, especially now, as it cools down. This season, for guys, pleather (fake leather) has really shown up in so many fashion stores. It gives you the look without the pricetag, and is crueltyfree, too. Mostly, it’s undetectable, giving you that cool leather look at an affordable price. Go for traditional black, or make a change with reds and even whites; the look is versatile. I’ve seen simple studding creeping back in, with biker-
style detailing, but with a modern edge. If pleather’s not your thing, then corduroy and destroyed denim are hot on its heels. Go for nuetral colours with corduroy or paler denim, if that’s your look. Menswear used to be so predictable, but now you guys have fashionseasons to follow. Choose classic lines and non-fussy detailing, and you will have fashion that lasts more than a few years. A jacket should complement the rest of your clothes, so don’t opt for one that jumps out at you. Ask yourself if it goes with the rest of your wardrobe.

WHEN letting out apartments, holiday ones in particular, it is really important to keep them up to a high standard. There is a lot of competition on the island, and offering a good-looking, clean and well-maintained apartment can make all the difference to your guests. It is also more likely that they will take better care of your property, if, in the first place, it is let out to them in good condition. I’d like to name a few dos, don’ts and absolute-musts to help you keep your investment property exactly that! An investment! When choosing a colour palette, go with pale shades; white isn’t a great choice for the walls, if you can avoid it. As much as seeing fresh, white walls makes everything
seem clean and new, they don’t stay like that for long in a rented accommodation. It only takes a few, mucky hand prints, and the whole place can look worse for wear. You will always need to freshen up the paint, no matter what colour you go for. I prefer to get the paint mixed; that way, you can keep the code and repeat, and the quality of paint also tends to be better. For your sofa, leather is the best option. If you want to go for fabric, you need to be aware that, between guests, you won’t always have time to clean it thoroughly. Keeping an upholstery cleaner as a contact is necessary, to use from time to time. If you have a sofa bed, be aware that it will be used, mainly, by children, so a
waterproof mattressprotector is essential. It is also a good idea to have a printed-out guide on how your sofa bed opens and closes. This prevents anyone who doesn’t know how it works from forcing it in any way, and damaging the mechanism. The No1-must, in my opinion, is mattress and pillow protectors. They are not only for the protection of your pillows and mattress, and will make them last longer, but are a hygiene aspect for your guests. At Chic Interiors, we don’t just offer an i n t e r i o r- d e c o r a t i n g service and apartment furniture packages, but also deep-clean and maintenance services, to keep your rental properties to the standard required. U2, Bruce Springsteen and George Michael come to town...
TributoFest
TRIBUTE bands have become a subculture all of their own, starting off, years ago, as a way for friends to get together and celebrate the music of their favourite bands, by playing their music. They have become an important, and lucrative, part of the rock landscape, with many up-andcoming musicians gaining experience in tribute bands, before launching their own careers. In fact, several bands, including Journey, Yes and Judas Priest, have found replacements for key members by turning to tribute bands. Some of the best tribute acts sound more like the bands’ original lineups than the actual bands do these days, which is one of the main reasons they’re so popular. The top tribute acts in the business have become self-sustaining, touring entities, keeping the classic-rock flame burning by performing the songs we all know and love, to enthusiastic fans all over the world. TributoFest is a series of concerts, bringing to Tenerife some of the best tribute bands in Europe and the world, for a night at Magma with three on each bill. The next event, on Saturday, 4th November, stars an amazing U2 tribute band, Elevation The U2 Experience, who have headlined festivals all over Europe to crowds of up to 30,000. They have the best look-and-sound-alike Bono in the business, who has featured on all sorts of TV programmes and channels. This next concert also features Enzo as Bruce
Springsteen, who does the most credible tribute to the Boss in the UK, and sounds more like Bruce Springsteen than Springsteen does himself! Also on the bill is Jay Francis’ tribute to the late, great George Michael. Jay is based here in the South of Tenerife, but performs across Europe, and was fortunate enough to perform in front of George before his untimely death, and to meet him. Having had the seal of approval from the man himself makes his show all the more special. In 2018, TributoFest has some amazing bands and solo artists booked for more events at Magma Arte y Congresos, including the No1 in the world, official, Coldplay tribute band, plus tributes to The Rolling Stones, Guns and Roses, Phil Collins and Genesis, Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran and many more. TributoFest is aiming to be an addition to some of the amazing original acts that come to Tenerife; not a replacement, but, unfortunately, the logistics and costs of these originals make it impossible for them to come. So come and see the next best thing, with a concertexperience comparable with the originals. So, as U2 said in their song, TributoFest … Even Better Than The Real Thing! Seat belts so vital
By Emma
from Motorworld
WE are all aware that seat belts must be worn at all times BY LAW, but so many people ignore this.
By doing so, they are risking the possibility of serious injuries, or even death, in the event of an accident or impact. More worrying is the fact that many parents do not take the safety of their children seriously enough, and allow them to travel without the use of proper restraints. It is the driver’s moral responsibility to ensure that the driver and all passengers are wearing their seat belts. In the case of children, it is the driver’s responsibilty to ensure that, in addition to a seat belt, they are in the appropriate car or booster seat, where the law requires. A campaign started on 17th September which coincided
with the return to school for many children throughout Spain, with some very worrying results. During this campaign, which only lasted a week, 2,094 adults were discovered not to be wearing a belt, as well as 198 children. There were 1388 drivers and 706 passengers, and, while we may be comfortable regarding the knowledge and confidence of our driver, it is often other road users, or weather conditions, that cause an accident. During this campaign, albeit a short one, of the 198 children who were found not
to be wearing a restraint or seat belt, 41 were actually travelling in the front of the car, and were under the permitted height to do so; very alarming! A seat belt is a very important safety measure. It is designed, along with further safety technology such as air bags, ABS brakes etc., and you should view it as a type of life insurance. In the event of an accident, if the driver or passengers were not wearing the appropriate seat belts, the insurers may refuse to pay out on a claim for injuries, and the police can impose
fines. It is very important that the belt is worn correctly ie not tucked under your arm, or fitted very loosely. Generally, with modern seatbelts, this is not possible. Children under the height of 135cm MUST travel in the rear of a vehicle. This used to be based on age, but, with the human race altering so much, it has been changed to a height, rather than age, situation. All children must be restrained in an approved system that is suitable for their height and weight (babies and younger children).
The ONLY exceptions for children in the front seats are when a vehicle does not have rear seats ie a van, when all rear seats are already occupied by other smaller children of the same characteristics, or when it is not possible to install all child restraint systems in these vehicles. However, remember that if the Ficha Tecnica states that a car has five seats, then that is the MAXIMUM number of people it may carry, regardless of whether they are children or adults. Carrying more passengers than the documentation permits will result in the insurance being null and void. Where children have to occupy a front seat, they must always have the approved and appropriate restraint system for their weight/size. If the vehicle has a front airbag, only rearfacing restraint systems can be used if the airbag has been de-activated. Often, there is a switch in the car’s glove box that permits the owners to switch this on or off, as appropriate. Always remember the original, UK slogan: “Clunk click, every trip.”

MOST people wonder why green, red, orange and yellow bell peppers don’t all cost the same. The various colours don’t taste alike, and neither do they have the same nutritional value. They are different in more ways than their colours. The colour you choose should depend on how you are going to use it. There are two major factors that determine why they come in different colours: the time of harvesting, and the degree of ripening. They all start out green, and change colour as they

Traffic-light peppers! mature. The green pepper changes to yellow or orange, before reaching its mostripened colour of red. The yellow, orange, and red bell peppers may be more expensive than the green ones, because they take more time to be harvested. The longer they stay on the vine, the sweeter they get and the more nutritional value they have. Also, the different colours have varying shelflives. The green ones are the cheapest because they are unripe. Because the other
colours are left on the plant longer, they need additional time and care from farmers. The consumer pays for that extra time on the vine. People purchase more green peppers than any other colour. They gradually turn yellow, then orange, then red, as they ripen. Because they are harvested before they are ripe, the green ones lack a lot of nutrients, and they are not sweet. The yellow version is quite similar to the orange one, and both are harvested at
the midpoint of maturity. When harvested, they come in between the unripe green, and the completely-ripe red. The yellow and the orange ones aren’t as bitter as the green, but are not as sweet as the red. The yellow and orange are the “in-between” bell peppers. The one you choose depends on your personal preference, and the dish you are going to use it in. The orange bell pepper has thick flesh and is much sweeter than the green, but it is not as sweet as the red. The
orange one is more expensive than the green. However, it is not as expensive as the red! Because the red variety are left on the vine the longest, they become the sweetest with the most nutrients. For example, red bell peppers have 11 times more betacarotene, about two times more Vitamin C, and ten times more Vitamin A than the first-harvested green bell pepper. They have a shorter shelf life. This has an impact on the price of red bell peppers. Because of this, they are the most expensive of all.

Their fur was so badly matted, it was difficult to see that they were actually dogs. Needless to say, we immediately had them clipped and bathed, and they are on their way to recovery. We find it unbelievable that people can be so callous and cruel to the many dogs that arrive at our refuge. We really hope we can find these dogs good homes, to help them forget their horrendous past. Assistance required Please contact us if
you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here
Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol
Swallows’ Fayre THE Swallows’ Christmas Craft Fayre, in aid of its annual Cancer Charity fund, takes place on Saturday, 11th November, from 11am-3pm, at the El Paso Bar in Castle Harbour, Los Cristianos. The event, run by the Tuesday Crafters, is organised by Andrea Blundell and Doris Gonzales Edwards, and last year’s Fayre raised 570 euros.
THERE is a long-held misconception that cats need to be able to roam outdoors to be happy, but, with all the kitty luxuries available today, it makes the great outdoors just seem a little less … great.
Today's indoor felines seemingly have it made. As an added bonus, indoor cats potentially have longer life spans, because they're less likely to be exposed to cars, predators and some diseases than outdoor cats. You can enrich your indoor cats' lives by giving them some space. Everyone needs a little spot to call their own, so you could create them a place that provides them with privacy. Many cats like to play, and every indoor cat should have lots of toys. If you're a cat owner, chances are there are claw marks on something in your home. Cats love to scratch, so you could provide them with multiple scratching surfaces. Make sure there’s a room with a view. Open the blinds on a few windows in your house, so your cat can observe the outdoor goings-on. Most importantly, be sure to treat your kitty to a lot of one-on-one time with you. Whether it's playing, petting, grooming or
just hanging out, your cat will be happy he's spending time with you. Still hoping ... We haven't given up hope for our special Gracie finding a big-hearted person wanting to give her a loving home. We know she's tested positive for feline leukaemia, but she's in such good health you would never believe it. This can be the case for a lot of positive-tested cats, given a healthy diet and lots of love and attention. Two-yearold Gracie has been spayed, micro-chipped and vaccinated. We really feel she can give somebody plenty of joy if she is given the opportunity. PLEASE consider Gracie to be your companion. Contact Sharon Whatsapp 6625 24006, to arrange a meeting. Adoptions Please consider adopting a kitten/cat from us. All our cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.cats-welfaretenerife.com/pets. Ring or Whatsapp Sharon on 6625 24006 (seven days a week 9-6pm), or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm, on 6712 82773. Message us on Facebook, or contact us on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. All kittens go on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. If you adopt two kittens together, kitten injections, micro-chips
and neutering is FREE for the second kitten. Adopt a black kitten, or two, and both kittens receive the above treatments, free of charge! Foster carers needed We do not have a refuge, so we urgently need people who are willing to foster kittens who are too young to be adopted, but need a safe place to stay until they are old enough to go to a forever home. Also, cats recovering from surgery, illness or injury need somewhere to recuperate. We provide all the essentials for your foster cat: litter, food, litter tray, beds etc, and all veterinary bills are covered. We advertise and find them homes, so you do not need to do this. Please contact us if you feel you can help. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10-6pm, Saturdays 104pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Dog of the week - Cajal CAJAL is a five-year-old big man, and a very good boy indeed. He really is lovely. He has been with us for a while now, because the larger dogs, sadly, get overlooked. You may think that if you are in an apartment you can't have a larger-sized dog - not true, though, if you have time and energy for nice long walks. Can you give Cajal a loving home? Call Sue on 629 388102 for more information. Adopt, don't buy! Showstoppers 2017 The time is now! Those uber-talented students of the Gillian Banks Theatre School in South Yorkshire are back to entertain you with a show that’s bigger and better than ever before. Can this be possible? Well, you will have to come and see, but we have to tell you that no less than 33 young performers are in this year’s show, and it is simply awesome. We hope to see you on Monday, at the Auditorium in Los Cristianos, from 7pm.
Tickets are on sale from the Cultural Centre reception, today (Friday) and Monday until 2.30pm, or you can pay on the door. You can also book online at www.arona.org. Call Sue on 629 388102 for more information. Proceeds will benefit not only Live
Arico, but also Helping Hands and Amigos de Gillian Banks (Day Centre Guaidyl) Don’t miss it! Come and walk the doggies! Join the Live Arico dogwalking club on Saturday mornings from 11am. Our dogs absolutely love it, and you will, too. Send a Whatsapp to Eugenio on 633 717480 and he will meet you there. Happy trails! Live Arico shops Come and bag a bargain at any of our three shops: San Eugenio - opposite Hotel La Nina, at Las Carabelas, near Amanda's Bar. Open every day (104pm), and now Sundays! Los Cristianos - Calle Revron, near Thistle and Dragon Bar and play-park. Open daily (10-4pm) Golf del Sur - Golf Park, just before the lottery kiosk. Open Monday-Friday (106pm), Saturday (10-3pm), Sunday (10.30-3pm) DON’T THROW THINGS AWAY! Call Steve on 634 819410; we can sell them to help the dogs.

JAMIE Whitnell, or Jambo, as everybody knows him, faced Legends A on Tuesday and completed his second Break & Dish of the season (a pool term meaning to break and pot all the balls and the black without the opponent getting a shot).
Jambo (pictured), won his three games to stay in second spot in the stats, with 15 played and 12 won. His team, Boothen Legends, are third in the league on 10 points, having lost just once this season. In the Second Division, league leaders Yelas Travellers scored another away win, this time against Team Reef, who are now the only team to have a player still on 100% in the stats. Well done Mark Gray, who has recorded nine consecutive victories.
Also, congratulations to Happy Days, one of the league’s new teams, who gained their first win by beating Nauta Rejects last week. Don’t know how I missed that, but well done to them. Finally, although the season is well under way, it may still be possible for any players out there to join the league, if they wish, because situations change. Ronaldo simply The Best again Footie for fatties! REAL Madrid WE all know the terrace song, “Who Ate All The Pies”, and anyone who has played Sunday pub football will be aware that it features gentlemen with fuller figures.
superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was named the best player in the world for the second year running at FIFA’s “The Best” awards in London. The 32-year-old won by a resounding margin, with 43.16% of the votes. Fivetime Ballon d´Or winner Lionel Messi came second (19.25%), while Neymar, the world’s most expensive player, took third spot, with 6.97%. Ronaldo was instrumental in Real Madrid’s double-winning campaign last season as Los Blancos secured, the La Liga title and the Champions League. And his manager, Zinedine Zidane, secured the
Best Male Coach award. Ronaldo, the former Manchester United star, scored twice in the 4-1 Champions League final win
against Juventus, as Madrid became the first team in the modern era to defend the Champions League crown successfully.
Now, a football revolution is sweeping the UK with Man v Fat leagues springing up everywhere. The idea is for players to lose weight while enjoying the beautiful game. A recent update showed that 80 men from around the fat leagues had lost a total of half-a-ton in 12 weeks. Of course, limiting food intake plays a big part, so there’s none of the usual,
off-to-the-pub trips after training for beer and crisps. The leagues offer incentives like extra goals for pounds lost, and a support network for the players. Eventually, there might even be a Fat World Cup… well, members of governing body FIFA are always accused of being fat cats! Pep talk is a tonic Lorca 2 CD Tenerife 2
By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
WHEN it takes 20 minutes to break into the opposition half, you just know it is going to be a frustrating night. And Tenerife staged their worst 45 minutes of the season at Lorca last Saturday.
However, they mended their ways in the second half to rescue a point. Other results helped to soften the blow of another draw, which left them unmoved in ninth position. Keeper Dani Hernandez, pinned down under a home onslaught, had to perform heroics, his palming aside of a top-corner-bound Eugeni free-kick after six minutes was outstanding. But defensive jitters didn’t help. Raul Camara had to
mop up at the post after Aveldaño failed to clear, and Tropi was cursing Dani as he pounced on his big chance. Apen was Lorca’s dangerman, yet he was given room too many times to set up a shot. Tenerife were severely short on choices, with injuries cutting deep into the squad, but the
Swimming
starting line-up should still have offered more. Juan Carlos sniffed the sweet air of the forward half of the pitch and found it to his liking. He was first to test the home keeper, with a low effort. But Lorca kept up their pressure, and an inswinging corner found Pena with a free, glancing
header, which was diverted past Dani by Acosta’s outstretched boot. A few minutes later it was 2-0. A long boot upfield should have been snuffed out by Carlos Ruiz, but Apen showed quicker reflexes and wriggled through to score as Dani scrabbled to make up ground. Just before the break, though, Tenerife found a lifeline. Malbasic used his aggressive style to win a penalty, which Juan Carlos side-footed into the net. It was time to change the game-plan, and coach Pep Marti responded by bringing on Alberto and Suso for the second half in place of Tayron and Acosta. Captain Suso’s determination and hunger for the cause was just what was needed, and it was Lorca’s turn to feel the pressure. Alberto went close with a free-kick that strayed wide, and Casadesus was looking perkier with the changes. Yet Apen still needed watching. His forearm in Camara’s face went
unpunished, and he was always looking for a cheeky advantage. But Marti showed he hadn’t given up on at least a share of the points, and Brian Martin was his last change as Juan Carlos departed. The new forward was a welcome addition, but it seemed strange to let Malbasic take a corner when his place should have been right in the keeper’s face as the ball came across. Casadesus, who was alert when another Tenerife chance came up, finished clinically and tied the score with just seven minutes left. There was time for one, last, point-blank save from Dani to ensure a precious point. But Tenerife must be aware that they need the intensity for all 90 minutes. Last night (Thursday), Tenerife entertained Espanyol in their King’s Cup home leg, and this Sunday night’s home league clash with Osasuna should see more of the walking wounded return to action.
Karate
Walls of Hell challenge YOU might think there would be a shortage of swimmers willing to pit themselves against the sea and the elements in an open-water race. But 50 people have signed on for the second Walls of Hell race in Santiago del Teide on Sunday. La Travesia Murallas del Infierno is fast becoming the benchmark for those who really like to make a splash. Punta del Teno, on the north-west corner of Tenerife, and Los Gigantes beach are the extreme
points of the toughest of three race choices. A leisurely 1.5km around the bay of Los Gigantes is quite enough exercise for some, and the 6.5km swim from Masca beach is pushing it up a big notch. Take a bow those hardy souls who are tackling the full 12km distance, from Teno lighthouse, in the shadow of the mighty cliffs, and into Los Gigantes. It’s a daunting prospect, so good luck to them all. And here’s hoping for kind winds and helpful tides.
Football
Old-school footballers’ day EVEN when the bones start aching and a rubdown with the magic sponge takes longer to work its spell, footballers can’t shake off that passion for the game. That’s why CD Marino are holding their fifth annual Veterans’ Tournament tomorrow (Saturday) at the Estadio Antonio Dominguez, from noon. The triangular competition will feature teams from hosts CD Marino, CD Puerto
Cruz, and UD Realejos. And this year, Marino will have 10 players attending who are now past the 70-year mark. Homage will also be paid to many of their players no longer around, but who contributed to the formative years of the former fishermen’s team, created in 1933. There’s bound to be plenty of tales of marvellous games, and trophies lifted. Have a great day, gentlemen!
Karate kids’ mat attack ADD another top world sporting event to the Tenerife roll call … and this is a real biggie! The World Karate Championships for Cadet, Junior, and Under-21s is in La Laguna for five days.
The intense competition, featuring 1,900 super-fit fighters from 109 countries, began on Wednesday and finishes on Sunday.
The huge event is being held at the Pabellon Santiago Martin, which is already home to basketball, concerts, and ice shows. The youngsters are competing in different weight categories, within their age groups. The event is viewed as an important stepping-stone to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, and every aspiring star wants to be there. Spain, Iran, Egypt, and the US lead the way with 40 fighters each. Spain includes one representative from Gran Canaria, as their
lone Canarian fighter, while England has 34 competitors on the mats, and Scotland 23. Coaching tips and innovations will be shared during the five days, as leading experts and exponents of karate pass on their expertise. La Laguna and Santa Cruz have both been experiencing open-air street displays and classes, and television and online coverage will be spreading the word around the globe. CD Marino
Derby draw for Marino Union Guimar 0 CD Marino 0 ADDING a rugged edge to their play has helped CD Marino pick up valuable away points, and on Saturday they ground out a draw to hold on to seventh place in their Tercera Division group. On the artificial Tasagaya pitch, Keeper Petar and his defence repelled the home front-liners, including striker Gaizka, who spent a season with the blues.
Since their summer promotion from the Preferente League, Guimar have settled in well. But they had a disastrous end to the game with two, separate, late sendings-off for Natalel and Carreño. A late no-show for the Canarian Division of the league left 21 teams, so each week one sits out, and this weekend CD Marino get a rest. It’s just a short respite as the national holiday on Wednesday 1st November brings a derby game at home to Las Zocas, with a noon kick off in Playa de Las Americas.

Six-month betting ban for ex-snooker champ
FORMER world snooker champion Stuart Bingham has received a six-month ban for breaching the sport’s betting regulations.
The 41-year-old, who won at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre in 2015, was discovered to have placed match bets amounting to around £36,000, some of which he played in, over a 12-year period. Snooker’s ruling body, the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA), said Bingham had admitted to a small number of bets, using two accounts in his own name. But he was actually guilty of “greater betting over at least seven years”. Half the ban has been suspended until October next year, but the world No.9 will miss the UK Championship and the Masters because he cannot play again until 26th January. Bingham, who was said not to have disclosed bets made in his manager’s name, must also pay £20,000 costs. The WPBSA said there
was no suggestion that Bingham was “doing anything to influence match outcomes, or that he had engaged in corrupt activity”. He has until 6th November to appeal against the decision. Chairman Jason Ferguson, a former player, said: “It is very disappointing to see such a high-profile player fall foul of the WPBSA betting rules. “Stuart is a great competitor, and I have no doubt he has always played to the best of his ability. But this case shows that there are no exceptions to the rules. “Players must understand that they cannot bet on snooker at all, even if they are not involved in a match or event. Any player found to breach the betting rules will face the most serious of consequences.” In breaking down
Bingham’s offences, the WPBSA said he placed bets in accounts under his name, and in the name of his manager. He also placed bets through a third party. Bingham, from Basildon, Essex, came to prominence in his first season as a pro, when he beat defending champion Stephen Hendry 10-7 in their World Championship, first-round match at Sheffield, in April 2000. Hendry had won a record seven world titles in the modern era, as well as more major titles than any other player in history. But he failed to be a world-beater again after the Bingham shock, and retired in 2012 as the most successful player ever, earning nearly £9 million on the table, plus millions in sponsorships and endorsements.

Arona’s southern pride
Standing tall and proud
TWO wins out of three in the European Champions League is a good start to Iberostar Tenerife’s defence of their title.
ARONA Tenerife Sur ladies, who have settled in well in the Superliga Feminina, are enjoying life at the top table. Another home victory saw them beat local rivals Aguere La Laguna 3-0 at Los Cristianos sports centre on Saturday night.
Coach Romina Lamas must have been delighted with the way they disposed of their northern rivals so easily, 30-28, 25-18, 25-21, to cement sixth place in the league. This weekend, they are on their travels to Madrid, to play Feel Volley Alcobendas. It promises to be a tougher test, but spirits are high in the Arona squad.
Wednesday´s trip to Turkey could have been a tricky test, but, thanks to a blistering final two quarters, they won 87-74 against Gaziantep to sit in second place in their eightteam qualifying group. Tenerife, trailing at the halfway mark after 21-25 and 25-15 quarters, turned on the power with 27-19 and 20-9 advantages in the final sections. Tim Abromaitis was a towering figure, scoring 18 points, and victory, in the end, was comfortable. Making their home court into a fortress is the key to a winning season for Tenerife. Another Saturday-night league game in La Laguna, and a 4,247 crowd, spurred
them on to a 83-69 win over Bilbao. It was a steady performance with quarter scores of 20-17, 13-14, 18-17, and a whopping 32-21 final quarter. Polish player Mateusz Ponitka is fast-establishing himself as one of the Liga Endesa’s leading lights. This week he top-scored again with 16
points. New Bosnian coach Nenad Markovic made Ponitka one of his first summer signings, and the player gets better with each game. On Wednesday, it’s the turn of Italian side Capo D’Orlando to visit La Laguna in the European Champions League.
