Mum killed as domestic violence flares again

Arona Mayor JosĂŠ JuliĂĄn Mena (centre), along with neighbours and local councillors, offers his condolences to the dead mother

THE body of a 28-year-old mother, believed to be yet another victim of domestic violence in the Canary Islands and Spain, was found at her family home in El Fraile at around 4am on Wednesday. Continued on Page 3

Another victim of domestic violence Continued from Front The Guardia Civil were called by a neighbour in the same Arona street as the victim, who lived with her Cuban husband and six-year-old child. On arrival, the officers said it was it clear that she had been attacked by her 45-year-old partner, who had disappeared. He was later arrested on the grounds of domestic violence, though his wife had, previously, never made a restraint order against her husband. The woman’s family now has temporary custody of the youngster, who is receiving psychiatric care. Two days of mourning took place in El Fraile, and all activities organised in the area by Arona Council were cancelled as a mark of respect to the victim and her family. It is the fourth, domesticviolence death to be registered by the Canarian Government this year, and the 42nd in Spain, overall. In June, in the same borough, Local Police arrested a 51-year-old Briton, said to have used violence against his partner in La Camella. But she refused to take action. The incident took place at around 10pm, when neighbours told the emergency services they could hear a woman screaming for help. The suspect, who had a wounded foot and smelled strongly of alcohol, opened the apartment door to police. The victim was in the bedroom, along with the couple’s young daughter. Her mum’s lip was bleeding, and she had, evidently, been punched in the face, as well

as having cuts and bruises on both arms. She said the man had beaten her and pulled her hair. During the attack, several objects fell to the kitchen floor, one of them causing a cut on the man’s foot. The woman was taken to the Guardia Civil police station in Las Americas to serve a denuncia on the suspect, but she refused to press charges. Tragically, Spain has a track record for violence against women… the kind of domestic violence in which the perpetrator is always a male, and the abused a female. The Spanish society is becoming more and more aware of this, and it has had an impact on the law. Over the last few years, there have been many changes in the Spanish Criminal Code regarding gender-abuse, or gender-violence. The sentences are getting stiffer, and protection for the claimant is more absolute. Nowadays, if the police have been informed of a heated discussion between a man and woman, and there is, or was, a relationship between them, the man is likely to be arrested on the spot. The presence of alcohol or recreational drugs will make that more likely. And, even if the woman doesn’t press charges, or insists that it was, simply, a misunderstanding, the police may well continue with the arrest. The reason behind this is the appalling number of females killed by their partners, during incidents in which there was police intervention, but the victim never pressed charges. Back in March, the country’s ongoing war against domes-

tic violence led to Guardia Civil officers trawling through lists of convicted abusers, systematically. They wanted to interview them, in an attempt to understand their mindset. The Interior Ministry, responsible for policing, emergency management and national security, among other sectors, called gender violence a “national emergency”, after figures showed that 16 killings, by current or former partners or spouses, had already been reported, that early in the year. It equalled the 2016 overall total, said Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido, making it the worst year on record. In four cases, the victims had previously reported their killers for violence, and at least two had applied, successfully, for injunctions, preventing the aggressors from approaching them. Six children were orphaned,

and a baby girl was killed when her father threw himself off a balcony with the tot in his arms, to “get back at” her mother. Incredibly, a 79-year-old woman was stabbed to death earlier this year by her 86-year-old husband at a nursing home in El Campello, in the Alicante province, where the two Brits lived. And, soon after this incident, two men were arrested over the deaths of their former girlfriends. One victim was a 47-yearold, early-retired, Guardia Civil officer, found dead in an empty bath, with a plastic bag tied over her head, in the southern Valencia province of Gandia. A former boyfriend was arrested in Móstoles (Madrid). The other victim, aged 49, was initially thought to have fallen down the stairwell in her Valencian apartment block, but an ex-boyfriend

was later arrested for her murder. Guardia Civil officers began their exhausting task of getting into the minds of attackers and killers in March, having carried out full interviews with 30 convicted criminals across the country. And, this year, they planned to quiz at least 200 in all. Their aim is to ascertain the signs to watch out for, in terms of attitude, psychiatric and psychological traits, and behaviour. The Guardia plan is to form two, permanent, preventionand-response units, to evaluate injunctions and other protection measures for actual, or potential, victims. The officers will also reinforce safety networks for children caught in the crossfire, and look into the amount of funding assigned to town councils, ministries and regional governments.

Nothing new about these old fairy tales IT’S the same old trio of national newspapers, and the same old song: Mount Teide is about to erupt, for the umpteenth time, apparently. British dailies the Sun, Mirror and Mail are definitely singing from the same sheet. Happily, for residents and holidaymakers in Tenerife, they are completely out of tune! Yes, we’ve experienced several, minor earthquakes in recent months, but don’t we always? Some cause a stir, even a huge tremor, as well as evacuations, as experienced by La Gomera folk, some years ago. One of the papers even had

an eighth Canary Island springing out of the sea. But these fairy tales don’t half disappear quickly when even editors, desperate to fill their news pages, realise they are approaching rock-bottom. Unfortunately, they do not reckon on the harm they

are doing to Tenerife’s tourist industry, which is the island’s lifeblood. Maybe, just maybe, they should print genuine news. After all, the Brexit affair, and the current “Sex in the Commons” controversy, should keep them busy for years.

Catalan Premier and colleagues dodge the courts

THE Spanish judiciary has wasted no time in initiating legal proceedings against the 20 Catalan politicians behind the declaration of independence in the regional parliament last Friday. Former Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont, and 13 members of his government, all ousted by Madrid’s emergency powers, using Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution, were summoned to appear in Spain’s High Court, yesterday (Thursday) and today. Fifteen former Catalan leaders, accused of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds, showed up at either the National High Court or Supreme Court in Madrid yesterday. And High Court Judge Carmen Lamela didn’t mess around, jailing former Catalan Deputy First Minister Oriol Junqueras and seven other former Catalan regional ministers

on remand. A ninth person, former regional business secretary Santi Vila, must post a 50,000-euro bail to avoid pre-trial custody. In her decision, Judge Lamela said there was a “high risk” that the accused would attempt to destroy evidence or flee. Punishment under Spanish law for rebellion is up to 30

Flight bookings plummet INTERNATIONAL flight reservations in Catalonia have dropped by 22%, following the region’s political unrest. According to ForwardKeys, a data and IT company for travellers, international bookings for flights in the Spanish region fell that much since the beginning of October, compared with the same period last year. Olivier Jager, the company’s Chief Executive, said: “Domestic, political unrest usually deters visitors, and that is what we are seeing now in Catalonia.

“This will also have a knock-on effect in other parts of Spain, because many visitors arriving in Catalonia will travel around the country.” He added: “If the political crisis worsens, I fear we will see a further decline in bookings. This trend will be of great concern, because travel and tourism represents such a large proportion of the Spanish economy, adding up to over 14% of GDP.” ForwardKeys, based in Valencia, analyses more than 17 million flightbooking transactions a day, drawing data from the major, global, airreservation systems, plus selected airlines and tour operators.

years in prison, and sedition carries a maximum sentence of 15 years. But Puigdemont, and four of his former regional ministers: Clara Ponsatí (education): Toni Comín (health); Lluís Puig (culture) and Meritxell Serret (agriculture), remained in Brussels. Jordi Turull, the former Catalan Government spokesman, was first to answer the court’s questions, at the investigation’s initial pretrial hearing. Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia, citing “sources close to the dismissed executive”, confirmed that the five rebels were still in the Belgian capital and would not be turning up late. The Public Prosecutor’s Office was said to be asking for a European Arrest Warrant against Puigdemont and the four other absentees. Meanwhile, six members of the speakers’ committee of the Catalan parliament, summoned to appear in the Spanish Supreme Court on the same days, did so. The summons, from the High Court and Supreme Court, came swiftly after announcements that both courts had accepted formal

accusations, filed by Spanish prosecutors. High Court Judge Carmen Lamela, overseeing the case, said Puigdemont, and the 13 members of his government named in the state prosecutor’s action, would have to pay a combined bond of 6.2 million euros (the same sum, allegedly, taken from the public coffers in Catalonia to help fund the illegal independence referendum on 1st October). If the bail money is not paid in three days, their assets could be seized. Lamela said she understood that the former Catalan leader, and members of his cabinet, had “plotted a strategy in which all of the secessionist moment was perfectly organised, with the roles shared between government and parliamentary authorities, and civic associations”. But at a highly-anticipated press conference in Brussels on Tuesday, following the startling news that Puigdemont had travelled to the Belgian capital after last Friday’s independence declaration, the former Catalan premier said he would return to Spain, only if he received “guarantees of a fair trial”. Puigdemont, and four members of his dissolved parliament, did a bunk to Brussels on Sunday, driving from Barcelona to Marseille, then catching a direct flight to Brussels. Belgian lawyer Paul Bekaert, who is representing Puigdemont and is a specialist in human rights and extradition, said: “Puigdemont is in Belgium to prepare a legal riposte to any eventual moves by Madrid.” The former Catalan chief insists he won’t return to Spain until he is “given guarantees” that he will receive fair treatment, and an “independent” trial with “a separation of powers”. He added: “We are here to act with liberty and security. The other part of

the government, headed by former deputy premier Oriol Junqueras, will remain in Catalonia as legitimate members of the Catalan government.” The former premier, who spoke in Catalan, French and Spanish in front of the press, also confirmed that his PDeCAT party would run in the 21st December elections, called by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. “It’s a challenge we are going to accept,” he said, adding that he would respect the results, and called on Madrid to do the same. “Wherever you find ballot boxes, you will find us,” he pledged. And with regional polls less than eight weeks away, the two main parties in Puigdemont’s coalition intend to run, one way or another. A PDeCat spokeswoman said: “Mr Rajoy, we will see you at the ballot boxes,” while a representative of Junqueras’ Catalan Republican Left party said: “We will find a way to participate on 21st December, which could be one more opportunity to consolidate the republic.” According to a recent poll for El Mundo, the elections could be very close, with anti-independence parties being supported by 43.4%, and pro-independence parties on 42.5%. Separatist parties taking part in last Friday’s independence vote in the Catalan parliament, who celebrated the new Catalan Republic, appear ready to accept the normal regional elections, called by Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy under the Article 155 powers to suspend home rule in the region. PDeCat’s Marta Pascal said: “We are not afraid of the ballot box because it is a chance to defend a project. But we do not accept the wretched application of Article 155.”

European Union’s 2017 wine grape harvest will hit a 36year low. The output in Italy is anticipated to be 23% down, while France will drop by 19%, and Spain by 15%, according to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). But there are some positives because, although the volume produced will be lower, vineyard owners say the quality will be higher. Around the rest of the world, the US output is expected to be down 1%, while a 6% increase is expected in Australia, and Argentina could see a 25% jump.

AT least 100 professionals, including law-enforcement and government authorities from EU member states, attended the launch of a new tool to help in online investigations. Representatives from 30 countries, and more than 60 organisations, including representatives from Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter and Uber, saw the new SIRIUS platform unveiled at Europol headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands. SIRIUS is a secure web platform for law-

enforcement professionals, which enables them to share knowledge, best practices and expertise in the field of internet-facilitated crime investigations, with a special focus on counterterrorism. It offers an innovative, collaborative approach by providing investigators with a platform, quickly and efficiently, to exchange know-how, manuals and advice, as well as tools to help them analyse the information received by the online service-providers. The platform also addresses other challenges in criminal investigations, such as streamlining requests to online service-providers, and improving the quality of the responsive record.

Plasterboards hid huge cocaine haul

THE boss of a Seville-based company was arrested after police covered a mindblowing 1,109kg of cocaine, hidden in a shipment of plasterboard panels. A joint investigation was conducted by Spain’s national police and its anti-drugs squad (DEA), together with German Customs officers from Bremen. The probe, which began in August, culminated in the cocaine discovery in a container, passing through the northern German port of Bremen. The shipment, which contained eight compartments packed with the South American drug, was heading for Puerto de Algeciras, a port in southern Spain, and 935 packs of cocaine were seized. A dodgy Seville building company, with offices in Malaga, was said to have been bringing in large volumes of cocaine, under the guise of importing materials from South America. It became obvious to investigators, who were keeping the company owner under surveillance, that he was negotiating a large shipment of cocaine with South America providers.

High hopes for Spain economy SPAIN has recorded vigorous growth in the year’s third quarter, prior to the current Catalan crisis, according to the latest, official data. The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) expanded by 0.8% from July to September, according to a preliminary estimate by INE, the national statistics institute. It is a continuation of the strong, 0.9% growth in the second quarter and 0.8% in the first quarter, as the Spanish economy enjoys strong consumer demand, a tourism boom and buoyant export demand. But the figures do not take into account any economic fall-out from the country’s crisis since the Catalan Government’s illegal, independence referendum on 1st October. The quarterly growth figures are in line with the Government’s forecasts, and, along with the central bank, it is predicting a 3.1% economic growth for the full year. Madrid is confident of meeting that 2017 goal, despite the Catalan crisis. But it has revised down its earlier forecast for

2018 to 2.3% from 2.6%. The Spanish Government foresees “a slight slowdown in domestic demand, because of the negative impact of the uncertainty related to the current political situation in Catalonia,” it said, in midOctober. A number of institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), have recently cautioned that the Catalan crisis, Spain’s worst in decades, will have a negative impact because the semi-autonomous region accounts for 19% of the country’s total GDP annually.

Credit-rating agency S&P Global even suggests Catalonia could fall into recession. Nearly 1,700 companies have relocated out of the area in the wake of the referendum, including CaixaBank and Banco Sabadell. Separately, INE said that Spanish inflation slowed slightly to 1.7% in October from 1.8% in September, as a result of a dip in fuel prices. But the Spanish IBEX35 stock index was up 2.47% following the dissolution of the Catalan Government, which demonstrated a sudden

rise in investor confidence. CaixaBank and Sabadell, Spain’s third-and-fifthlargest banks respectively, each saw their share prices jump about 2.5% in value. “After an escalation of the Catalan crisis last Friday, Spanish markets are in recovery mode at the start of this week,” said City Index analyst Kathleen Brooks. “Although this is a fluid situation, a few things are keeping the markets calm, which is why the euro is back above $1.16, and the IBEX is the best performer in European equity markets.”

Electric cars a real gas for government THE Spanish government is investing 50 million euros in a scheme to promote sales of electricallypowered, hybrid and gas-fuelled cars. The Plan ProMovea will see 60% of the budget spent on research and development, and on installing charging points in towns and cities. The remainder will go towards grants for those who want to replace their conventionallyfuelled vehicles with new,

green-energy versions. Plan ProMovea, which does not cover petrol or diesel cars, is managed by the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE), part of the Ministry’s Energy, Tourism and Digital agenda. It replaces the popular Plan PIVE, which later became known as the scrappage scheme. This enabled owners of cars more than 10 years old to trade them in for up to 3,000 euros against a brand-new, forecourt vehicle. IDAE commissioners were expected to agree the

Plan ProMovea this week. The former Plan PIVE, or Plan Movea, was given a 14.26m-euro budget in August to subsidise old-car

trade-ins to boost the motor industry and make Spain’s roads safer, as well as to promote cleaner air. But the entire pot ran dry in 24 hours.

The Ministry has been forced to increase the budget for the forthcoming scheme. But it is not yet clear whether all the cash will be needed, because electric, gas and hybrid cars are still not selling well. That’s because drivers worry about being able to find a charging point when their power source runs down. But the Government plans to roll out a mass installation of on-street chargers, to encourage motorists to break out of their petrolfuelled comfort zone.

Rapists queued up Christmas to abuse a tourist treats needed Accion del Sol News

FOUR Moroccan men, each said to have taken his turn to rape and sexually abuse a tourist in Gran Canaria, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil. The victim told officers she had been raped by one man at a shopping centre behind toilets in Puerto Rico, near Mogan, in the south of the island, before being targeted by a second, whom she fought off before managing to escape.

But investigators, who discovered the sex-attack had been recorded on CCTV, realised that she had been sexually abused by four men, who forced themselves on her, one after the other. A fifth man tried to assault her, more than an hour later as she lay helpless, and barely conscious, on the ground. Officers say the immigrants, some of whom were in Spain illegally, took advantage of her being drunk. The woman’s nationality has not been revealed, but the

arrests followed a lengthy investigation, which began when the victim reported the foul crime to the authorities on Boxing Day last year. A spokesman for the Guardia Civil, who arrested the four men, said: “Four Moroccans, aged between 26 and 32, have been arrested on suspicion of crimes of sexual assault and sexual abuse at a shopping centre in the south of Gran Canaria.” The Guardia are believed to be hunting the fifth man linked to the attack.

Woman flown to safety

A GERMAN woman, aged 70, fell into a deep barranca while taking in the Masca Buena vista scenery during a hike in the north of Tenerife. She suffered moderate leg injuries, but a rescue plan had to be deployed,

involving members from the Canarian Search and Rescue team, along with the emergency services and the fire brigade. The pensioner was then evacuated by helicopter to a nearby hospital in La Guancha for treatment.

Fired… for being at work too long! Public safety assured A LIDL manager, referred to only as Jean P, has been fired for spending too many hours at work in the Barcelona branch he ran until June.

WORK has begun on improving the TF66 insular road, from Valle San Lorenzo to the TF-1 motorway The Arona Council project is costing some 1.5m euros, but it will be money well spent because the road, which caters for around 20,000 vehicles daily, links the neighbouring towns of

Cabo Blanco, Buzanada and La Camella. The work has been prioritised because of the road’s poor state, and the Council hopes that the boost to public safety, including pavements, busshelters and pedestrian crossings, will see an improvement, economically and socially.

Bosses of the giant German supermarket chain discovered he was committing the unthinkable crime of starting work before the designated time to, “get the shop ready to open to the public”. Before clocking in, Jean was “dealing with orders, changing prices and loading up entire palettes with goods”, according to the notice he received, telling him he’d been fired. Lidl cites “serious breaches of contract” as the motive for Jean’s dismissal, after footage on the supermarket’s security cameras revealed he was working extra hours. On several occasions in April, Jean was seen to arrive at the supermarket a 5am, and spend “between 49 and 87 minutes” working before clocking in, according to Lidl. In doing so, explained the letter, he was guilty of infringing the edict that “each minute worked is paid,

and each minute worked should be registered”. Lidl also maintained it had received “complaints” from other members of staff, who said Jean had suggested to them that they should also arrive early. In addition, the manager was alone, which is not allowed for security reasons. Jean, who had worked for Lidl since 2005, believes he has been dismissed unfairly, which has prompted him to make a legal claim to be re-employed by the supermarket chain. In it, he stresses that he never asked any member of staff to accompany him to open the supermarket. He has also stated that at no time did Lidl suggest he should not turn up early to get the supermarket ready, in order to manage opening hours efficiently. His lawyer, Juan Guerra, points out that had Jean broken any rules, it was more to the advantage of Lidl than to Jean himself. “Curiously, he is being punished for working too hard, and making an effort to see that the shop runs smoothly,” said Guerra, who added that his client received no warnings about his behaviour.

Jean criticised the company’s “hypocrisy” because pressure was put on him to reach sales targets. And he said that working longer and harder than specified in his contract was not something he often did. But he felt it was something he was forced to do through circumstances, especially as the store had been restructured, just before the footage on the security cameras unmasked his “misdemeanours”. According to Jean, who said the directors were aware that the restructuring would take time and effort: “To reach the sales targets, it was necessary to work outside opening hours.”

Boat-fall lady is in hospital A WOMAN lost her footing while climbing on to a boat in small fishing harbour in Santa Cruz, and fell into the water. The 58-year-old was helped out by port officials, who then notified the Canarian Emergency Services. She was treated for chest injuries by medics, and later transferred to the University Hospital.

Why not be the wind beneath their wings? CORY’S Shearwater chicks, cute but vulnerable, majestic in flight but confused by the bright lights of busy tourist zones, face an annual struggle to leave, safely, their Canarian breeding grounds for their Atlantic freedom. Thankfully, they have plenty of friends from environmental groups, to councils and hotels. But you could be their biggest friend in these vital, first few weeks of their lives. A well-drilled rescue operation has swung into action for the “Pardelas”, and many have already been saved after crash-landing on beaches, balconies and walkways. It’s as easy as phoning the free 112 emergency number. Operators are geared up to receive your call in English as well as Spanish, and will send a Civil Protection team to take the fallen birds away for a health check, later releasing them back into the wild. Just a small problem you may think, but

Arona is a hotspot for the chicks’ first-flight failures. Last year, 621 Shearwaters were helped back on track from this municipality alone, in just a few weeks. Sharon Leighton, who owns the Cats Welfare charity shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur, actually rescued one from a balcony on the nearby Sand Club complex last Sunday. “A lady came into the shop and asked if I could catch a bird which had landed on her balcony,” said

TF-1 to get facelift THE TF1 motorway, from Arafo to the South Airport stretch, is being retarmacked, and traffic will be diverted accordingly. Work starts on Sunday night, between 10pm-6am, when the motorway is considerably quieter than at other times. The job is expected to be completed in around five months.

Sharon. “She was unsure about touching it. “But once I saw the bird, I knew it was a protected species and took it back to the shop and called the police, who dealt with the situation.” The beautiful seabirds are good swimmers, and, even when they’re young, their webbed feet are pretty powerful. They live out in the Atlantic, using islands, such as the Canaries, to lay their eggs on open ground, in the

cliffs and ravines, between October and November. But this leaves them open to attack from cats and dogs, and they are unable to find food for themselves. Amigos de Las Pardelas has stressed that Shearwater chicks must not be fed or given water. If found, the advice is to put them in a box with holes in, call 112 and operators will either arrange a pick-up, or advise you of any nearby drop-off points. Rumbo Ziday volunteers are organising the rescue campaign, and have plenty of back-up. Here in the South, these fallen birds are found annually, some 80% of them landing in Arona, Adeje, Guia de Isora, and Santiago del Teide. Arona has already taken the lead, with preventative measures announced by Environmental Councillor Yurena Garcia, in a recent meeting with touristsector reps at the Arona Gran Hotel. The measures included reducing light intensity by 40% from midnight, where it’s safe to do so, closing sports facilities from 10pm, and talking to hotels about finding the chicks on balconies and outside areas.

Joey & Ana reunited

HANDSOME Joey went missing, possibly stolen, a year ago from his home in La Caleta, Costa Adeje. His family were distraught, and searched everywhere for him with no luck. A few months later, they had to return to Holland, and, with their beloved Joey still missing, they feared the worst. However, two months ago, a lady found a lost dog in a local town. She took him to the vet to check for a chip. He had one, and it was Joey! The vet rang the Dutch contact number, and Joey's mum could not believe the news that her boy had been found. COUNCILS in some Madrid municipalities are seeking new measures to control the numbers of wild boar in their areas, which are estimated at between 35,00040,000, and growing! The boar are, increasingly, approaching urban centres in the mountains and forest areas. And it is believed that up to 50% of the animals are tuberculosis carriers. Wild boar have been blamed for two serious traffic accidents, and signs have been installed to warn drivers of the dangers. The public have also been advised not to feed them, or leave rubbish bags outside waste-collection points. Some municipalities have even invested heavily in special fencing to keep the wild boar out. It is rare for a male boar to attack a human, but females might if their piglets are threatened. The regional government

says the wild boar are the responsibility of the relevant municipalities when they hit the towns. It adds: “Wild boar control is like any other pest-like control of animals that can be carried out by the town hall (cockroaches, rats, pigeons and others), none of which, including wild boar, can be treated as a companion or domestic animal. It is estimated that legal hunters, with licences, have killed more than 21,000 boar over the last five seasons. But the numbers continue to still increase.

Experts say the animals do not have predators and are omnivores, so they feed more easily. And a twoyear-old female can have 10 offspring a year. The goal is to reduce the numbers over the next five years. Hunters supervised by the regional government will finally begin a cull next week, after several delays. It is suggested that meat from the slaughtered swine could be donated to NGOs (non-government organisations), once it has been passed fit for human consumption by the slaughterhouses.

A TEAM of Navy divers deactivated an artillery mortar shell on Saturday, 100m out from El Medano beach, which is a magnet for sunbathers. A local sports diver, who discovered the shell at a depth of six metres, alerted the Guardia Civil. The Spanish Ministry of Defence sent a team of Navy divers, who specialise in deactivating explosives, and it was their fourth visit to Granadilla de Abona beaches this year.

Cats Welfare News

Well done, ladies! AN incredible total of 2,393 euros was raised on Saturday, 21st October, when Cats Welfare's Sharon Leighton and her friend Bridget Barnett bravely paraglided down to La Caleta beach from the mountains of La Quinta, a dizzy height of 3,000 feet. A massive THANK-YOU to everyone who sponsored and donated, to help reduce the vet bills. Also, many thanks to Dariusz and Ramon from www. touchthesky.eu, who made it all possible. Fancy a go? Send them a message, and mention Cats Welfare for a fantastic deal. Both ladies agreed that it had been the most wonderful experience. “As soon as we took off, all our pre-jump nerves disappeared,” said Sharon. “The views were spectacular, and we highly recommend it.” Cats' tails Have you ever wondered why cats have tails, and what they use them for? The tail helps to serve as a counterbalance when cats walk on narrow spaces, such as fences or shelves,

and aids in balance when a cat is running after, or jumping on, prey. Tail injuries can cause permanent damage. The tail houses nerves that can affect the muscles, as well as their control of urination and defaecation, and pulling on the tail can cause nerve damage. This may heal over time, but can often be permanent. Cats can live without a tail. Even though they use their tails for balance, if it ever needs to be amputated because of injury, the cat will soon learn to compensate for the loss of it.

They use their tails to communicate. As with most animals, cats communicate mostly through body language, and the tail is a great indicator of your cat’s mood. When cats put their tails in the air around other cats, it can be seen as an invite for them to come and have a sniff! The domestic cat is the only feline that can hold its tail in a vertical position while walking. Wild cats hold their tails horizontally, or tucked between their legs. Tiddles and Winks Available to adopt this

Where are you tax resident? By Paul Montague at blevins Franks

E S TA B L I S H I N G where you are resident for tax purposes can be more complex than you think, especially if you spend time in both Spain and the UK. However, it is important to determine this early on, so you can make sure you are registered and paying the right taxes in the right country. If not, sorting it out later could prove complex and costly. It is surprising how many people pay tax in the wrong country. Some think they are not liable to taxes in Spain when, in fact, they are. Others believe they are resident in Spain, when they are actually UK tax resident. Others may be trying to use the rules to their advantage, but get it wrong. However, with automatic exchange of information now in force, it is vital that you ascertain

whether or not you are tax resident here, and pay taxes accordingly. For peace of mind, make sure your affairs are in order. If you are a Spanish resident, you are liable for income, capital gains and wealth taxes on your worldwide assets, and subject to the Spanish succession and gifttax rules. You will generally have to submit annual income and wealth tax returns, as well as Modelo 720, to declare overseas assets over 50,000 euros. Tax residence in Spain There are three situations that could make you resident in Spain for tax purposes: 1. You spend more than 183 days in Spain in a calendar year, whether or not you take out a formal residence permit. Temporary absences are ignored unless you can prove that you are habitually resident in another country for more than 183 days. 2. Your “centre of economic interests” is in Spain. 3. Your “centre of vital interests” is in Spain. So, if your spouse and/or your dependent children live here, you are presumed Spanish tax resident even if you live and work in another country, unless you can prove otherwise.

The UK Statutory Residence test These rules are too detailed to reproduce here, but, in summary, you are automatically treated as UK resident if you spend 183 days or more in the UK in a tax year; or your only main home is in the UK, or you work full time in the UK. You are automatically treated as non-resident if you spend less than 46 days a tax year in the UK, and were not resident the previous three years; or if you spend less than 16 days there, or you work overseas full time and spend less than 91 days in UK. Where your residence status is not determined under the above tests, the “sufficient ties” test determines whether you are resident in the UK, based on a combination of the number of days you spend in the UK, and the “ties” you have with the country. If you fulfil the domestic tax residency rules of both countries, then the UK/ Spain double-taxation treaty sets out a list of “tiebreaker” rules to establish where you should be paying tax. The Spanish taxation regime may not be as taxing as you think, especially for

retirees with investment capital. There are compliant tax-efficient arrangements available that can make a considerable difference to how much tax you pay. Seek specialist, personalised advice. Blevins Franks has been advising expatriates in Spain for 40 years, with an office in the Canary Isles for over 20 years. Find out more at www.blevinsfranks.com. Tax rates, scope and

reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Apple’s new phone not ringing out yet

THE launch of Apple’s most expensive smartphone, the iPhone X, has been delayed in Spain by at least a month. That’s because the tech firm’s most expensive handset, with prices starting from 1,159 euros, sold out within 10 minutes of being made available for pre-order at 8am on Monday. The initial allocation of devices is set to arrive today (Friday), but Spanish buyers face a four-to-five-week delay, according to a message received when placing their order. The news follows industry

rumours that Apple has axed 50% of its planned launch production. A report in the Nikkei Asian Review, the world’s largest financial newspaper, claimed that 20 million units, rather than an initial projection of double that figure, will be shipped before the end of the year. The issue, apparently, concerns the phone’s facialrecognition system, which is a hotly-anticipated, new feature. Apple CEO Tim Cook said earlier this week that the company was “working as hard as possible to make as many as possible”.

The One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge For BBC Children In Need

Tuesday, 7th November, ITV1, 20.00

Prince William and Prince Charles join more than 100 stars to celebrate the nation’s unsung heroes at the prestigious Pride of Britain Awards 2017 on ITV. Hosted by Carol Vorderman, celebrities including David Beckham, Simon Cowell, Sir Michael Caine, Joanna Lumley, Sir Rod Stewart, Sir Lenny Henry, Suranne Jones and One Direction’s Liam Payne pay tribute to some truly awe-inspiring people at the glittering event at the Grosvenor House in London’s Park Lane. Award presenters range from Prime Minister Theresa May, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and scientific genius Sir Stephen Hawking to the country’s best-loved TV and sports stars. In a year blighted by terror attacks on Manchester and London and the Grenfell Tower inferno, the focus will be on the remarkable heroism of members of our emergency services and the NHS.

Thursday 9th November, BBC1, 19.00 The One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge for BBC Children in Need will take off from New Broadcasting House in London on 9 November, beginning its nine day, 500-mile journey north to Glasgow. This year’s all-new team of six young riders has been supported by BBC Children in Need funded projects. Now keen to give back, Team Rickshaw will take on the epic ride to Glasgow in order to raise money for the charity and help make a difference to young lives. The challenge sees presenter Matt Baker take to the saddle once more, as he cycles alongside the team. The week’s programmes will feature a chance to hear directly from the young riders about the experiences that have led them to take on the Rickshaw Challenge. The challenge will end on 17 November during BBC Children in Need’s Appeal show, but viewers can tune in to the show every week day from 9th November to follow the team’s journey.

Sheridan

Sunday 5th November, ITV1, 21.00 This lavish one-off special sees the multi award-winning actress and singer, Sheridan Smith, headline her very own show for the first time. In a celebration of her love of music and performing, the star of ITV shows such as Mrs Biggs and Cilla – for which she won a BAFTA Award – showcases exclusive performances of songs from her new album as well as other musical numbers, all accompanied by a live orchestra. Sheridan also talks with host Alexander Armstrong about her life and stratospheric career.

Blue Planet II

Sunday 5th November, BBC1, 20.00 The Deep takes us on an epic journey into the unknown, a world of crushing pressure, brutal cold and utter darkness. It’s the largest living space on our planet, and today, scientists think there’s more life here than anywhere else on Earth. This is our final frontier. We discover alien worlds and bizarre creatures. Savage hordes of squid hunt in the depths. Coral gardens flourish in absolute darkness. A whale carcass generates a frenzy as slow moving, five-metre-long sharks fight for their first meal in a year. There are fish that walk instead of swim; worms that feed on bones; shrimps that spend their lives imprisoned in a cage of crystal sponge. As we go deeper, the sheer weight of water creates almost unendurable pressures. Yet even eight kilometres down - where the basic chemistry of life was once thought impossible - we find strange new species in the dark. At volcanic hotspots, micro-worlds blossom into life. The creatures that live here are as alien as the worlds they inhabit. Haircovered crabs feed on gushing plumes of hydrogen sulphide; shrimps hover on the fringes of clouds of chemicals, so hot they could melt lead... ...yet one of these geysers may even hold the secret to all life on Earth.

k’s TV Choice Motherland

Tuesday 7th November, BBC2, 22.00 Episode one of BBC Two comedy series Motherland, piloted last year as part of the landmark sitcom season. Motherland isn’t the public face of motherhood, it’s unromanticised parenting: competition, cafes full of kids, dog-poo bags standing in as replacement lunchboxes... In episode one Julia moves out of her comfort zone and reluctantly invites the entire class to her kid’s birthday party. With her Mum still refusing to help out she relies on Liz’s party hacks and Kevin’s entertaining skills. And anyway, she organises events for a living, this will be a breeze! Motherland (6x30’) is written by Graham Linehan (Count Arthur Strong, Father Ted), Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Pulling), Helen Linehan and Holly Walsh (Dead Boss). It is a co-production between Delightful Industries and Merman and is produced by Richard Boden for Delightful and executive produced by Clelia Mountford for Merman.

The Murder Of Becky Watts: Police Tapes Thursday 9th November, ITV1, 21.00

“When we saw her in the morgue, that’s when it really hit us. I mean, they did their best to cover up where he cut her up and things like that. But I could still see where he’d decapitated her. And no parent should have to see that.” - Becky Watts’s father Darren In this new documentary for ITV, Susanna Reid gains unprecedented access to never seen before police tapes from the investigation into the murder of Becky Watts, revealing the inner workings of the case and the strategies detectives used to snare her killers. When 16-year-old Becky went missing in 2015, it sparked the largest police investigation ever launched in Bristol and dominated headlines nationwide. Initially it was assumed that Becky had simply run away, but as detectives began to unearth clues surrounding her disappearance their attention turned to stepbrother Nathan Matthews and his girlfriend Shauna Hoare. This programme, which is part of ITV’s Crime & Punishment season, pieces together the methods the police used to build their case against Matthews and Hoare using previously unseen police footage from the heart of the investigation, including interview room tapes, forensic crime scene videos, and the moment the killers were arrested.

What has changed?

Basically, you have more choice with what to do with the money you save in your pension. From age 55 you will now be able to access all the money which is in your pension pot. Before the changes were made you were limited to what you could take out each year.

Your Pension Pot Take your money as cash

Income payments as and when you want them

Guaranteed income for life

You can do this in one go or as a series of smaller amounts

Flexi-access drawdown

An annuity can secure regular income for the rest of your life

Or Any combination of the above options You don’t have to do anything with your pension pot now. You can leave it invested until you need it. And it’s at that point you can see which of the options available to you that will best suit your circumstances. It’s important you fully understand all the options and the different tax implications they have. Sebastian & St James will be able to help you with this and give you advise which suits your own needs.

Building your pension pot

You can see the amount of choices you have to take money from your pension pot. But to have those choices you will need to have first built up a pension pot. You might find yourself in one or more of the following circumstances, each of which could be the potential solution to increasing the size of the pension pot you have:

• You’re close to paying off your mortgage so may soon have further scope to consider an increase in pension contributions. • Your children are leaving home, easing some of your monthly financial commitments. • You have old pension plans that you may wish to take advice on, as to whether or not they may be better served within a new plan. • You’ve received some inheritance that you could consider the merits of investing into your current pension pot.

Do you know you get tax relief on payments you make to a pension pot? For a basic-rate taxpayer, this means it would only cost £80 to get £100 paid into your pot. The pension changes have had a positive impact on people’s feelings towards retirement and do give them more choices to help achieve the retirement they want. How you take advantage of the changes is up to you. But speaking to us can help you find out more about the changes or if your current circumstances mean you might be able to build up your pension pot.

Sebastian & St James International Financial Advisers Limited: advice based on integrity, trust and experience.

Amid rumours of an imminent engagement between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, this new documentary charts the history of their romance and asks who is the woman the fifth in line to the throne wants to marry. The film will tell Meghan’s story, from childhood to her career as an actress, model, successful businesswoman and human rights ambassador. This uplifting film features two religious communities, Muslim and Catholic, as they learn to co-exist and come together through their faith. This uplifting film features two religious communities, Muslim and Catholic, as they learn to co-exist and come together through their faith. Ballaghaderreen is a remote and traditional town in the west of Ireland. Since March 2017, its small and staunchly Roman Catholic community has been dealing with the arrival of hundreds of Syrian war-torn refugees. Many of the townsfolk and local children are determined to give the refugees a warm Catholic welcome. Others fear that the new arrivals could soon overwhelm the town. Among the refugees is Ghassan, aged 21, who fled Syria with his grandmother, aunt, niece and nephew, leaving his parents behind. While their asylum claims are being processed, home for the next six months is the Abbeyfield Hotel - built during the Celtic Tiger boom, but long since abandoned.

Emergency treatment

hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot

FRAGILE, split ends or chemically- damaged hair? There’s only one solution - the scissors will have to come out. There is absolutely no use hanging on to wispy strands, or trying to cover up missing sections. Once it’s past a point of no return, there’s only one solution … a good cut. I’m not into chopping off hair when it’s not needed, but giving your hair a blunt edge will stop further break-

DO you own one, and, if not, why not? A little black dress is a must for any wardrobe, and can carry you from daywear to night.

There’s always one to flatter all figures, and your only problem is where and when to wear it. There isn’t an occasion that wouldn’t suit a little black dress, from weddings to funerals, and parties to formal events. It’s all about how you want to wear yours. With the Christmasparty season only

age, and you can hold onto more of your precious locks. Your hair shouldn’t have got like this in the first place, but it happens to us all. Try not to get upset about having it cut; instead, think of it as a new style, as you’re growing it back. If a stylist can’t send you out of the salon without removing some of the damaged hair, then it’s often not worth cutting at all. Trust in your stylist, and work with him or her to improve it. If this means investing in some professional

weeks away, now’s the time to hunt

products, then so be it. You’re not going to keep your hair if you’re not willing to listen, and put in time and effort to save it. No one likes having hair cut off when trying to keep it longer. Think of it another way; your dentist isn’t going to fill a tooth that’s totally decayed. It’s removed and replaced; it works the same. Your stylist is there to help you retrieve the hair you want, but don’t make those same mistakes again, or you will be back to square one!

down your little number. Look out for simple, cut lines, and nothing too elaborate. Keep away from anything too stand-out, as you will want to wear this one often. Glam up, or tone down, your dress with accessories; make it a statement piece, or keep it formal - it’s up to you. There’s always a little black dress in every season; especially now. When putting together your basic collection, it’s one of the fashion must-haves. Your LBD should become the centre of your wardrobe, because, with this, you will always have something to fall back on.

USING decorative items in your property is what makes it personal to you. They reflect your tastes and ideas, and express your personality through the choices you have made. If you live full-time in your property, you may have family photos or items of sentimental value to decorate your living space. However, sometimes it’s best to make use of a dramatic piece of art, and then add the very personal touches with photos in frames. If you rent your property, however, you may have to take a different path to give your home the wow factor, without being too personal or particular to you. Abstract art is one way of co-ordinating your pictures with the rest of your decorating scheme. You could have a neutral colour scheme for your floors, walls and furniture, and then use a picture with a splash of red, a couple of toning cushions casually placed on the sofa, and a red vase or decorative piece on the window sill. This is one way of making your room look very designer. It’s obvious the effect has been calculated to look smart, and the various pieces placed around the room will tie the whole thing together. Don’t go too far and have too many articles of the same colour, or

the effect will be spoiled. Another approach is to group pictures with a common theme, or a common colour, in one part of the room; in an alcove, for example. Remove clutter, because this will distract from the carefullyplaced items you want to show off and be more noticeable. Wall art is the name given to artwork that is not contained in a frame; it can be made of metallic shapes, either abstract or representative. These work particularly well against pale walls, and, if you are working to a theme, for example “Beach”, you can find some items that will fit in perfectly, such as metal representations of flip-flops, umbrellas or even fish or seagulls. Less is more in this respect. One amazing article can be the centrepiece of your decorating scheme, but you don’t want to make it too cluttered. Your eye needs to be drawn to this one item, and everything else needs to co-ordinate or work well with it to provide a balanced theme. If you have spotlights on the ceiling, consider pointing one light directly on to your “wow” article, whether it’s a picture or a carefully-placed dish. Mirrors can be used to throw light into dark areas, or to make narrow or small areas appear bigger. Choose

one with a luxurious, metallic frame to look more special. It’s more common to have painted walls in Tenerife, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t have wallpaper, and there are some very luxurious and striking patterns and colours available. If your rooms are small, it would be better to have your pattern on one wall only, with the others in a complementary paler and plainer colour. Remember that dark colours, whether in paint or wallpaper, will appear to draw the wall towards you and make spaces look smaller. Paler colours and textures can be used freely because they make spaces brighter and larger. If you do choose pale wallpaper, consider using a stunning mirror, picture or wall art to finish it off. The bedroom is one area where wallpaper works particularly well, with the headboard in a texture, such as rattan or leather, against the papered wall to complement the pattern. The rest of the room should be toned down so as not to compete with the effect. If you are not sure how to use decorative items to best effect, consider consulting an interior designer, who will have a better idea of proportion and effect. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789729.

By Val Sainsbury SUGAR is everywhere! Even those of us who don’t go out of our way to consume it, and don’t have a sweet tooth, often still end up eating more than we should.

It is present in many everyday foods, and is often only revealed by a close examination of the ingredients label! It has been estimated that an average adult consumes about 22 teaspoons a day of the white stuff! This significant amount can lead to all kinds of health problems. Here are some ways that sugar will impact your body. Your liver One particular type

3rd November - 9th November 2017

of sugar, known as fructose, has been shown to contribute to a fatty liver. This is a condition where fat globules accumulate in the liver, and potentially lead to fatty-liver disease. Unstable blood glucose Many individuals experience highs and lows throughout the day, such as fatigue and mood swings. Often, these are caused by wild swings in blood glucose, which are brought about by excessive sugar intake. Individuals who don’t consume a lot of sugar on a regular basis don't usually have to deal with sugar cravings, or experience these highs and lows to the same extent. Diabetes Diabetes rates go up by 1.1% for every extra 150 calories that a person obtains from sugar. There is talk about a new form of diabetes called Type 3. This is in regards to some research

that was undertaken, examining the links between insulinresistant diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. Obesity It's common knowledge that sugar helps to pile on the pounds. Children, in particular, are notorious for wanting to consume sweet foods. As childhood obesity becomes a huge problem in the developed world, sugar has been identified as one of the major culprits. Your heart Indirectly, sugar can affect the health of

your heart. Sugar has a direct link to diabetes, which, in turn, can lead to heart issues. A diet high in sugar is bad news for your heart health. The ageing factor When glucose enters the bloodstream, some of it attaches to amino acids and creates free radicals. These proceed to damage and harden the collagen and elastin in your skin. These are the building blocks that keep your skin strong, supple, and youthful. As your skin loses its elasticity, the visual results are sagging and ageing. Your circulatory system Too much sugar affects your insulin levels, which have an impact on your blood vessels. The smooth muscle cells increase, which prompts your artery walls to become tense. This can lead to high blood pressure, and this can contribute to heart disease or strokes. Your teeth There is a link between sugar, Candida and tooth decay. And poor dental health has, in turn, been linked to

multiple other health conditions. Sugar can also contribute to gum disease. Chronic infections that take place in any part of the body, including the gums, can also have an adverse effect on your heart health. Behaviour and cognition Many kids become hyperactive after consuming sugar, a behaviour that is attributed to the “sugar rush”. When some schools in the US cut back on the sugar in their school lunches and breakfasts, the average, academic ranking improved by 15.7%. Increased stress levels After the sugar rush that comes with sugar consumption, there is the sugar dive. During this time, the body releases stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones can cause you to feel edgy and irritable, and may contribute to long-term health problems, if they remain at elevated levels. Empty calories If you're filling up with sugary foods, chances

are you're not getting all the nutrients you need. Sugary foods are generally nutrientpoor. If you eat too many of them, they may push healthier foods out of your diet. Depression Consuming too much sugar and junk food may leave you at risk of developing mental-health conditions. There is a well-established link between sugar and depression. Gut dysbiosis Eating too much sugar can change the environment in your gut, and promote the growth of opportunistic pathogens like Candida Albicans. When you lose the important balance of micro-organisms in your gut flora, it can affect your digestion, your immune system, and much more. These are just some of the more serious and major potential side effects linked to the consumption of sugar. Eliminating, or just lowering, the amount we ingest can have multiple benefits for energy levels, appearance, longevity and overall health.

A week of Diabetes at Excellent Medical EVERYONE knows that a very serious situation now exists for people all over the world, who are not aware that they have diabetes. Over recent years, Tenerife Isla Sur Lions Club has run projects, and brought awareness of various medical conditions which, if not treated early, can have disastrous, long-term results.

Excellent Medical Services have agreed to make their private facilities available for free testing at their Golf del Sur Clinic, in conjunction with our Lions organisation, from Monday, 13th November - Saturday, 18th November inclusive, 9am-11pm. Two tests will be available; a diabetes preliminary test, as well as the measuring of blood pressure. The diabetes test is very simple, and will immediately indicate any abnormal blood-sugar levels. These can be examined further, if required, and the results of both tests will be given at the time. While both these tests are free, any ongoing appointments, if needed, will be charged by the clinic at 29 euros for an initial medical consultation, a discount of more than 65%, but only for those people who are part of this scheme.

Make an appointment for the tests, before Monday, 13th November, by calling 922 737 560. It is important not to eat any breakfast beforehand. When you attend the clinic, you will need to take your passport or NIE. You should also give them your phone contact number, e-mail address and postal address.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to be made aware of any possible problems, with regard to diabetes. Your well-being is important to you, and your family.

Boothen’s sorry

farewell By Andy Maughan BOOTHEN Legends played their last game on Tuesday, because avid Stoke City fans Joe and Sam Oakley decided they could no longer commit to playing every Tuesday. This was the team’s third season in the league, and they were sitting in third place after their final match, away to Scruffy Macs A, which finished in a draw. The team’s three remaining players, Jimmy, Richie and Jambo, will now join Legends A, which is actually perfect because the A team have lost three players in the last fortnight. Nauta Nomads are now top of the First Division, following their away draw against The Union Bar. Sam Maughan, star player for the Nomads, is still top of the stats, even though he lost what was only his second game of the season on Tuesday, against top-20 player Gary Reid. Arona welcome for British swimmers WARM water lapped gently at the sides of the Los Cristianos municipal swimming pool, and eager youngsters bobbed up and down the segregated lanes as the sun pierced a clear-blue sky over the mountains of Arona. Early rising was never as popular as this in the UK, but the three British-based swimming clubs had been in action since 7am, and were loving every minute. There’s a long, established programme of international swimmers heading to Arona, and Southport, just coming to the end of their week’s training camp, were on their ninth visit. Head Coach Mark Patrickson was still brimming with praise for the benefits of a Tenerife break. “We’ve brought 30 swimmers this time, aged between 12 and 17, and our next big target is the British National Championships

in Sheffield in July. “Last year, our Arona training helped us to a record 18 entrants in the Nationals, and we hope to beat that this year. Our two sessions a day will see us clock up 90,000m of swimming in total. “It’s perfect for us. Suzanne and the pool staff are so helpful, and we have regular accommodation in San Marino, which is a short walk away.” Two Northern Ireland clubs, Banbridge, and Aards, just 40 miles apart in County Down,

teamed up for their first visit, and were three days into their two-sessions-a-day week. Head Coach Dave Wilson was already seeing the rewards of the trip. “It’s a great facility, a 50m pool, wonderful weather, and a chance to fit some dedicated training into this half-term break,” he said. “We have 23 swimmers, some of whom already knew each other through competition back home, and it made sense for us to join forces and add a little competitive edge. “Our swimmers are mainly between 13 and 17, and we have three ladies who made last year’s Youth Olympics. And 22-year-old Connor Munn, who was in the last Commonwealth Games, is now on course for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia´s Gold Coast next July.” Michael Angus, Head Coach of Aards, has been a visitor to Tenerife for 25 years through

family connections, and he knew of the swimming-pool complex and its excellent reputation. He is a past President of Swim Ireland, and has used his experience of fund-raising to good effect. “We held a big gala in Belfast to help finance our trip,” said Michael. “As well as the swimming, it gives us a chance to build discipline and team spirit. But with no parents to help, they have to be aware of keeping their kit ready, making sure they drink plenty of water, and using sun protection while here.” There was certainly plenty of pride among the swimmers in their pink-and-silver Tenerife Tour skull caps, while the water bottles and personalised kit-bags looked neat, tidy, and ready for action. Out-of-pool needs had also been well thought out. “We are staying at Paradise Park

Hotel, which has a great range of food, so we can be sure the swimmers keep their energy levels up,” added Michael. “During breaks from our 10, two-hour sessions, in the week, we have been out and about, and down at the beach. And everyone is looking forward to seeing Siam Park.” As the British contingent put on their track suits and kit bags, there were plenty of other swimmers filling their lanes. From the Los Cristianos club to leisure swimmers, the main pool and the slightlysmaller marquee-covered pool behind, are always popular. A facelift will add spectator-seating and new facilities, and that’s without even venturing to the nextdoor sports hall. Arona is an excellent place for sport… and the message is spreading far and wide.

That net won’t bulge CD Tenerife 0 Osasuna 0 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review WHO were happiest at the end of this frustrating 0-0 game, the attacking, creative home side Tenerife, or Osasuna, the negative, cynical, away team? The red-shirted visitors actually celebrated a bad job well done. But Tenerife, apart from being less predictable with their shots, need to develop a harder edge, and be a bit quicker to change tactics. This was a very different type of goal-less draw than CDT’s Kings Cup clash, played at home a few days earlier. On Sunday, Tenerife had a more familiar line-up, with Dani Hernandez back in goal, and Inaki nudging

out Nahuel at left-back, which worked well until a penalty-tipping point after 55 minutes. Osasuna started the weekend on top of the division, but they set out their stall for a draw, and didn’t produce a clear chance in the first half. Acosta was again pulling the midfield strings for Tenerife, and an early, individual effort was typical of his cheek. Luis Perez had Mateo Garcia in his pocket, and Carlos Ruiz cut out the only Osasuna chance with a neat header, back to Dani. Sergio Herrera was a hero and villain in the visitors’ goal. His double save from Malbasic and Longo was classy, and even a late Longo shot, which went wide, did little to dampen the 13,762 crowd’s

expectation at half-time. Osasuna became tighter, meaner, and nastier in the second half, but, 10 minutes in, Oier brought down Longo for a penalty. Out came Osasuna’s full range of party tricks - pushing, shoving and arguing - which took the ref five minutes and three bookings to sort out, before Malbasic strolled up and hit a soft shot

straight at the keeper. Tenerife were rattled, and the ref had lost his way. Longo rose well for a header that Herrera took with ease, and Carlos Ruiz headed down an enticing ball that wasn’t punished. The home side looked offbalance, with everything going down the right side. Inaki wasn’t pushing up on the left, and that area clearly needed some attention. After 70 minutes, Juan Villar, who came on for Longo, didn’t waste much time in getting a shot at the keeper. Finally, Tayron replaced Juan Carlos and made some progress down the previously-unworried left-side grass. That last 10 minutes brought some urgency from Tenerife, but it was frustrated by formation

falling and rolling from the reds. At one time, it was like an early pantomime as two Osasuna players writhed around just in front of their own goal. Herrera, already booked, lived a charmed life, and he employed a series of mystery leg-spasms and ball-juggling to play out time. If he’d had a packet of seeds on him, he would have started planting them in his area! But the deserved home goal didn’t come, Tayron’s nifty back-heel to Villar didn’t quite work, and Acosta was stopped in his tracks by Kisco, well into the four minutes added on. With a fourth straight draw to add to their growing collection, and still ninth in the table, Tenerife need a strong result at bottomplaced Sevilla Atletico tomorrow (Saturday) at 5pm.

Derby success for Las Zocas LAS Zocas, more adventurous, and tighter in defence, made the short trip back from Las Americas to San Miguel with all three points, after winning this local derby on holiday Wednesday. Marino had to soak up some early pressure, and their former striker Sesma, who had a free roaming role across the front line, wreaked havoc on the hosts. Castillo wasted a chance after finding space in the box, while Aday hit a weak, low shot at Marino keeper Petar. Fran Delgado spurred Marino into life with his raids down the left, but proven scorer Nami was too wide on the other flank, while Kevin Castro seemed lost behind his forwards. Castillo was proving a

CD Marino 0 UD Las Zocas 1 handful, and Tato did well to keep him chained. Las Zocas were always willing to interchange positions, right-back Airam making a fast break forward and shooting just wide of the home post. Javi Saavedra took the hint and his pass up the left found Delgado, whose cross was snatched out of the air by keeper Isaac. Delgado, was providing the main danger for Marino. He followed up by swerving between Airam and Cherre, but was stopped by the alert Isaac. Las Zocas came back strongly, Airam linking with Borja in a slick move, and a flick-off to the incoming Sesma had goal written all over it before Petar intervened. There was encouragement for Marino as Isaac fumbled the ball under pressure

from Carlos Saavedra, but he secured it at the second attempt. Borja ended the half with a fierce shot that pinged off the angle of Marino’s goalpost and bar. It needed something special to separate the teams, and Las Zocas supplied it. A quick break saw Niebla leave Nathan in his wake, before crossing the ball to Borja, who drilled it home. And Borja nearly added a second. Tato was hesitant and Borja robbed him of the ball, only to shoot straight at Petar. Pedro went close at the other end, but his hard, low shot was smothered by Isaac, while Petar made a couple of crucial saves to stem the tide. But Marino had their moments. Castro managed a strong shot as defenders crowded in on him, and he

then set up Pedro, whose shot on the turn rose over the bar. Marino, who needed to try something else in attack, replaced Juanma with big Brazilian Rodrigo, who made a good target man. But the home side were hitting too many high, hopeful balls forward. Bolivian Ricky Vaca came on for Carlos Saavedra in an attempt to stoke the

attacking play, but Las Zocas made the running with a link-up between Niebla, Sesma, and Borja, which ended in a tame shot. The game was slipping away from a frustrated Marino, whose long balls forward weren’t finding the blue shirts. Rodrigo put in a strong, late shot, but it was blocked just before the final whistle. Marino have now dropped to 10th, with Las Zocas rising to 13th spot.

KARATE: Every punch, kick, and chop was added up last weekend at the World Karate Championships for Cadet, Junior, and Under-21s in La Laguna, Japan emerging top of the team table with 18 medals. Egypt were second with 14, and Spain third on 11. All 1,900 competitors, who sharpened their skills in the five-day event, are now one step nearer to qualification for the 2018 Tokyo Olympics. CD TENERIFE MASCOT: After an online vote by season-ticket holders, a new mascot has been chosen from an elephant, a fish, and a bird. In third place was a blue finch with 12%; second was a chicharro fish (common to Santa Cruz waters, and an inspiration for the fans’ nickname, Chicharreros) with 24%. But the clear winner was Elio-Doro, the elephant (inspired by CD Tenerife’s Heliodoro Stadium) with 64%. Fans are waiting with baited breath to see the costume design, and an actor worthy of the role. CYCLING: This Sunday, some 200 cyclists will wheel through the west of Tenerife on a 72km route for the fifth Marcha Cicloturismo de Santiago del Teide. The journey starts at 10am from Tamaimo’s main plaza, and ends back at the same point after exploring the attractions of the municipality. Give them a wave if they pass by.

Loch-In’s lock-out! DENNIS, Dale and the rest of the Palms Pool Bar team travelled to Loch-In A, but they were locked out as the home team scored a one-sided, 8-0 success, which included a maximum for man-mountain Paul. Scruffy Macs against Phoenix Bar is always a close-fought clash, and this match proved no exception. The result could have gone either way, but league leaders Scruffys triumphed by taking the 701 leg. Waterfall, who travelled to The Pub, claimed just a single leg against the hosts, whose doubles all night were superb. Emerald Lounge took a trip to Gaffers, and proud Daz came away with a fantastic 180. But the home team proved too strong, winning 6-2. Ourplace Playboys welcomed Picasso’s, and the highlight was Kenny’s 107 check-out for the visitors. Games were finely balanced,

but the home team recorded a 5-3 win. Pas O Nadas A continued their impressive form, and, though no 180s were recorded, they toppled The Tavern A 7-1. Sandy’s, who have eyes on the league title, were given a tough time at Clouseau’s, and had to rely on the three-man leg to share the points in a 4-4 draw, which keeps Legends looking over their shoulder. However, Legends travelled to Bar Leones and went home 7-1 victors, with doubles again counting, and Matt hitting a 150 check-out. Nutty Nautilus played host to Lady Macs, whose Jamie, scoring impressively, was in fine form. But with Mrs Brown joining in the fun, the visitors secured a 5-3 win. Although a 7-1 win for Marilyn’s A looked good on paper, Ourplace Playgirls were left wondering what might have been, had

Tenerife half. A mazy run through a clutch of markers, followed by a quick look up, and Maria Jose arched the ball high over the defence and down past the bewildered keeper at the post. Her Newcastle United cousin, Ayoze, would have been proud to claim such a quality goal! With spirits high, Sunday can’t come soon enough for in-form Tenerife, who are expecting a bumper crowd at their ground, which sits at the top end of San Isidro, for the noon kick-off.

Mamma Mia, what a week! TALK about extremes! Iberostar Tenerife experienced both ends of the basketball spectrum with contrasting performances. Wednesday night brought more European Champions League action to La Laguna, and it proved a one-sided encounter against Italian team Capo D’Orlando as they won 88-47. It made up, in part, for the previous Sunday’s 10-point league defeat at home against Valencia. Sicily-based Capo D’Orlando were extremely poor, the opening 26-12 quarter setting the tone. And the rest followed on 17-10, 23-16, and 22-9. It was a night for solid, sevenand-eight-point returns, right through the home roster. But New Yor-

ker Rosco Allen was the star man with 10 points. The only sour note for Tenerife was a leg injury to their Barcelona-born, point guard Ferran Bassas, which put him out of action for most of the match. Everyone has an off-day, but quite a few had theirs together as Tenerife slipped to a 5848 league defeat at Andorra on Sunday. The yellow-andblacks couldn’t have asked for a better start, taking the first quarter 13-5, but it went downhill after that. They lost the second 16-12, and a crushing 24-13 in the

third meant it was all pretty much over before the 13-10 final quarter. There was not much glory in the individual stats, either. Javi Beiran top-scored with nine points, and Fran Vazquez tucked in behind with five. But it was pretty grim reading after that. Tomorrow (Saturday) is probably the toughest league test of the season as Real Madrid come to town. The Pabellon Santiago Martin is a 5,000 sell-out, and every home player will have to stand up and be counted.
