Anna’s ‘ugly’ Canarian accent sparks debate on social media ANNA Guerra, a talented Canarian woman from La Laguna, has reached the finals of Spanish TV’s singing contest Operacion Triumpfo, which is similar to Britain’s The Voice.

But her elation has been dimmed by the controversy she caused, inadvertently, during a training session with her singing coaches.

One of them complimented 23-year-old Anna on her Canarian accent. But she fired straight back, describing the way she spoke as “ugly”, and insisting that she would like to speak “proper” Spanish.

Her response was picked up on social media last weekend and is still being debated widely, the

main question being: “Is Canarian Spanish really ‘proper’ Spanish?”

Cabildo to keep close eye on its pensioners Continued from Front The joint campaign was set up because the Cabildo had noticed a sharp rise in the number of accidents involving old folk.

They are particularly vulnerable, especially those in the twilight of their lives, who might have mobility problems or, in some cases, reduced cognitive functions, says Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

With these factors in mind, both parties insist that special, preventive measures must be put in place to keep them safe.

The project team is seeking to make elderly pedestrians aware of the importance of making themselves as visible as possible when crossing streets, or walking along roads which have no pavements.

It will encourage

them to “act safely”, giving them pointers about how to avoid accidents.

Senior citizens, and drivers of all ages, are being targeted in a campaign to highlight the main factors, or causes, involved in pedestrian injuries.

It will also teach the elderly how to recognise their own physical and mental limitations as they age, and how these can, possibly, put them in danger.

Campaign organisers plan to teach seniors how to compensate for reduced mobility, memory, hearing, eyesight and general cognitive functions, such as speed of reaction and decisionmaking.

Presentations, leaflets and talks at social gatherings, plus the distribution of reflective jackets, are part of the project,

which is aimed at reaching out to as many old folk as possible.

Local Police officers and medical professionals are also expected to take part in the campaign.

The DGT and Tenerife Cabildo believe that if they target pensioners’ clubs, social centres and associations with elderly members, they can reach out to at least 3,500 pensioners, many of whom could well be at risk.

Education programmes based on road-safety are organised regularly in most Spanish towns, but, generally, they target children and focus on schools.

Few have been aimed, pointedly, at the elderly, but the Cabildo hopes its initiative will spark similar campaigns elsewhere in Spain.

That means it features several dialects

and accents, often corresponding with different countries.

Prof Samper has supported her throughout the debate, saying that Anna’s Spanish was correct, and not a bit ugly. “It’s just that the Canarian accent is different,” he added.

And the Professor believes the inferiority complex, supposedly felt by a lot of Canarians about their accent, is misplaced.

Anna’s boyfriend, Jadel, a local artiste, also came to her defence, via his Instagram account, saying that she preferred the mainland-Spain accent, which would en-

able her to get more work.

Humbero Hernandez, a Professor of Journalism, also at La Laguna University, was adamant that homogeneous and unique Spanish did not exist.

He added: “Only 10% of Spanish people speak what is considered correct Spanish, while stressing the C, Z, S and J, whereas the other 90% of Spanish speakers, along with the Canarians, talk with a much softer tone overall.”

But it did not mean that Canarian Spanish was incorrect, he said, and neither was it something to have a complex about.

There are eight respected Spanish dialects: three European (Castilian, Andalusian and Canarian), and five American (Mexican, Central American, Caribbean, Andean and River Plate (Argentina and Uruguay).

2.2bn-euro take-over will be huge prize for hotelier

Sheer luxury at Grupo Barcelo’s 5-star La Caleta hotel

A SPANISH, family-owned hotel group, which opens a luxury, 5-star establishment in Adeje’s La Caleta next month, has made a 2.2bn-euro take-over bid for a rival chain.

The offer, by Grupo Barcelo, which has more than 230 hotels in 21 countries, has been confirmed by the NH Hotel Group, operating nearly 400 hotels in 31 global markets.

The take-over would create Spain’s largest hotel group, with 600 sites around the world, collecting an annual revenue total of some 3.7bn euros.

At its current, individual share price of five euros, NH has a market value of 1.75bn euros. The Stock Exchange suspended trading in NH on Tuesday, shortly before a statement to the markets.

The NH (Navarra Hotels) Group, founded in 1978 by Antonio Catalán, was named after the Spanish region.

The Barcelo Group, which features 15 Canary Island hotels, has its headquarters in Palma, Mallorca.

Cabildo plans to ID range of palm trees THE Canary Islands are said to feature 15,500 palm trees, and Tenerife Cabildo has launched a project to identify and catalogue the ones thriving here.

The scheme is aimed at identifying the number of palm trees in their natural environment, and also observing how to guarantee their future.

At present, palm trees can be found all around the island, from sea-level all the way up to the mountain ravines.

The ever-popular Phoenix Canariensis (Canarian date palm) has a unique ability to extract water from the ground, via aquifers (underground layers of water-bearing, permeable rocks), which is why they are able to thrive all over.

It is also one of the reasons why they are so resilient, because they can adapt to, and withstand, extreme temperatures, as well as droughts, and these attributes give it an edge over other species.

The study will take into account the geographical situation, along with other factors, such as the quality and condition of the land surrounding the trees.

The natural habitat of this species has, traditionally, been used for agriculture, so it is also very common to find palm trees in these areas.

The Phoenix Canariensis has huge leaves, which are carried in a rosette at the top of the tree. After flowering, the date-like fruit called támaras are produced.

There is not enough flesh on this fruit for them to be much use as a food. But they are edible and were eaten, along with the young leaves of the Canary Palm, by the Guanches, who lived on the Canary Islands before the Spanish conquest.

These people also made clothes and baskets from the palm leaves, and many items, such as mats, brooms and hats, are still fashioned from the flexible leaves today.

The tree’s sap, known as palm honey (or syrup), is also gathered on La Gomera, and can be found in shops throughout the islands.

Sex-crime gang shipped women in from Nigeria TWO young Nigerian women, who have been released from custody by the National Police in Las Americas, provided them with details of a criminal gang, specialising in human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

The youngsters had been forced to work as prostitutes on the Las America streets.

And police, who had been keeping a close watch on the pair, quizzed them after they had been arrested.

The Chief of Police revealed that the gang had been dismantled, and five

members arrested, which left a huge dent in their Tenerife operation.

The two girls, like many others, had been captured in their native country and then brainwashed with Voodoo.

They became terrified of the weird rituals involved, and, later, faced severe threats to themselves and their families by the gang.

The girls then had to endure a torrid trip by boat to Italy, where they were met by a gang member, who provided them with false passports, and whose colleague accompanied them to Spain.

Once on Spanish land, they were told the real reason for their trip, which was prostitution. They were

informed that they had each accumulated debts of 30,000 euros, and that they had to work to pay back the huge sum.

They were forced to work endless days and nights in a bid to pay off the so-called debt, and were told that if they didn’t meet the daily sum required, the debt would increase by 5,000 euros.

Happily, the youngsters are now in the care of a charity, which helps women in these circumstances.

But gangs will always prey on these gullible young girls, whose fear of Voodoo and their inability to speak Spanish, together with no legal documentation, is what makes them vulnerable.

Still a chance for Puigdemont Five A BRUSSELS court has delayed the extradition arguments and defence of ex-Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, and four of his former ministers, until next month.

This would allow Puigdemont to run his party’s campaign, from his temporary Belgium abode, for the regional elections on 21st December.

And he would be able to stand for election, unless convicted.

Puigdemont’s lawyer, Paul Bekaert, said after the first court

session: “We will argue the case on 4th December.” Now, he has further time to prepare the defence.

And two further appeals will be possible, with a final ruling coming, perhaps, after the elections.

Ford’s 750m-euro bonus lifts Spanish operations

CAR-MAKERS Ford has brought its total investment in Spain since 2011 to around 3bn euros, following another 750m-plus being poured into its huge Valencia operation.

Ford’s Valencia Vehicle Operations and Engine Plant Manufacturing company has, since 1976, produced more than 12 million vehicles and 16 million engines, and is one of Spain’s top automotive exporters.

Some 90% of Valencia’s vehicle production is exported to more than 75 countries worldwide. And Ford is

planning to build the next-generation Ford Kuga, a medium-sized Sports Utility Vehicle, at the plant. The SUV accounts for close on 50% of Valencia’s vehicle-production volume.

Kuga is Ford’s thirdtop-selling model in Europe, behind the Fiesta and Focus. And European sales of Kuga so far this year, totalling 126,900, has already shown a 22% improvement on the 2016 figures.

Valencia is also the sole production source for the Tourneo Connect people-mover and Transit Connect light-commercial vehicle, as well as the full range of Mondeo, SMAX and Galaxy models.

With Ford employing more than 8,000 people across all the operations there, the new investment will help secure employment.

The Interior Ministry confirmed that it had answered 14 questions in a document, listing cell conditions, security guarantees, recreation, hygiene and food at the jails to which

Puigdemont and Co would be sent.

Puigdemont would be sent to the Estremera Prison, near Madrid, and would have a cell of his own, with a shower and toilet, or he could share it with one of his exministers. And all five would have access to their lawyers.

and Belgium’s Charles Michel have already held talks, ahead of the rearranged extradition court appearance in Brussels next month.

Belgian Government officials previously said they could not intervene in Spain’s extradition request, since it was up to the courts to make a decision.

Controversial oil rig hits Granadilla Port AN oil rig, which arrived at Granadilla’s megaport on Tuesday morning to initiate its opening, will soon make its debut in waters off the coast, after years of controversial debates.

Over the last decade, there have been many discussions about the environmental impact of this infrastructure.

Ricardo Melchior, President of Tenerife Ports Authority, and former Tenerife Cabildo leader, had promised that

before the end of the month, Granadilla would have its first oil rig.

And he must have been delighted at being able to keep his word, attending Tuesday’s opening ceremony of the port.

The oil rig will, shortly, take on various repairs and maintenance work. It will also unload work from Santa Cruz port, where there are already eight structures situated outside.

Granadilla had received permission from the Ministry of Public Works (FOMENTO) to begin operating the platform on 3rd November.

Palm Mar facelift PLANS are already under way for a facelift at Palm Mar, a quiet spot between Las Galletas and Los Cristianos, which will be beneficial to all its residents.

A huge square, covering 7.365 square metres and directly facing the beach, is to be built at a cost of 751,000 euros.

It will create a more urbanised feel to its coastline, complementing the town’s residential areas, along with the commercial aspect.

The square will be constructed on one level, so that people in wheelchairs can also enjoy the space.

There will be plenty of seating with shade, and a recreational area for children, along with landscaping.

In addition, the square will be large enough to stage meetings, and is set to be an ideal venue to host public events.

Administrative procedures have all been approved, so the Palm Mar Plaza is ready for lift-off.

African migrants are sent to prison NEARLY 1,000 migrants have arrived on several boats into the South of Spain since last Thursday, and 50% of them, intercepted in the south-eastern region of Murcia, have been imprisoned!

They were moved to the unused Archidona prison, outside Malaga, because of a reported lack of space at the detention centres for immigrants.

But, following backlash and criticism from rights groups, Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido has defended the measures taken.

He told a radio programme: “We feel it is better that the migrants be held in a centre with the latest technology, such as sanitary facilities, showers, heating, beds and sports areas, than to put them in camps like the ones in other countries.”

According to reports, the unused Archidona facilities also include 1,008 rooms and a dining room, and other recreational spaces, as well as workshops, teaching classrooms, a gym (with showers and changing rooms) and a hairdresser with a barber shop.

But the decision to move the migrants was criticised strongly by Arantxa Triguero, President of non-profit organisation Malaga Acoge.

He told Spanish media: “We are radically opposed to these people being transferred to a prison, and we believe this is violating their fundamental right.”

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) say 17,687 migrants have reached Spain by boat between 1st January and 15th November this year, compared with 5,445 during the same 2016 period.

And Spain is said to be the third-highest entry point into Europe, behind Italy and Greece.

ADEJE cheesemaking company Montesdeoca has just returned from the London World Cheese Awards with the highest accolade of all.

The event brings together the world’s top dairy producers and sellers every year, and the Adeje firm walked off with a Supergold award for its cured goatand-oregano cheese.

There were 3,000 products competing this year, from 33 countries, and the Montesdeoca dairy won nine prizes altogether.

Overall, the Canary Islands took home numerous awards, with winners from Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and, of course, Tenerife, thanks to Montesdeoca’s gold, and a haul of three silvers and five bronzes for their range of excellent, cured and semi-cured cheeses.

Santa Cruz lights up for Christmas SANTA Cruz is getting into the Christmas spirit, and its neighbouring towns are beginning their celebrations, with more than 200 activities for everyone to enjoy.

The entire programme, beginning with the 7pm switch-on of Christmas lights at the Plaza del Principe, in the Tenerife capital, got under way last night (Thursday) and will continue straight through until Three Kings Day, on 6th January. The Santa Cruz Mayor was present, along with popular LatinAmerican singer Eva Cruz. The lights were also switched on last night at Candelaria Plaza, where there were children’s activities, along with a postbox to enable the

little ones to post their special request letters to one of the Three Kings.

Candelaria’s much-vaunted Christmas Nativity Scene, regarded by many as the main event there, was also revealed last night.

The entire Christmas programme, jam-packed with activities, includes the Los Fregolinos Traditional Concert.

Also playing a tune, as they do every year, will be the Tenerife Military Band, and don’t forget the bustling Christmas Markets, which will be scattered around the capital.

Guardia Civil given the runaround by car thief

A plea for justice, after ‘abuse of human rights in the Canary Islands’ FIVE Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) are seeking a commission to be formed in Brussels to investigate “judicial corruption” in Spain, and, especially, in the Canary Islands.

A MAN has been arrested in Tenerife for reckless driving, disobeying authorities, and also stealing four cars in one day.

The first car was stolen in Guimar, and, while he was speeding off, the driver had a head-on collision with another vehicle on a road heading towards Arafo.

He fled immediately towards Buenavista del Norte, where, say the Guardia Civil officers involved, he stole another three cars.

The reckless driver gave them the runaround, until a Guardia patrol car located him in a stolen car in La Orotava. But he managed to slip away again.

Finally, officers were able to halt his progress by placing a device designed to stop the car, and the thief was arrested in Candelaria.

Tools found in one of the cars would probably have been used to steal the vehicles. A huge kitchen knife was also found!

The request comes as a result of the perceived abuse of human rights, and disregard for rules of due process, in the so-called “Kokorev Case”.

In February, the five MEPs expressed their concerns over the case of Vladimir Kokorev, an entrepreneur of Russian-Jewish origins.

He was imprisoned for over two years in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, together with his wife and their son, with no trial or formal accusation, because of evidence declared “secret” by Spanish Judge Ana Isabel de Vega Serrano.

Earlier this year, MEP Fulvio Martusciello held a meeting in Brussels to clarify the circumstances behind the arrest, and the prolonged pre-trial detention, which he qualified as “shameful” and “xenophobic”.

He added: “It is hard to believe that it has taken place within a country member of European Community.”

Following a formal complaint, lodged by defence attorneys of Mr Kokorev and his family before the European Human Rights Commission, a trio of MEPs, Barbara Matera, Aldo Pariciello and Heinz Becker,

expressed their “bewilderment at Spain’s treatment of Kokorev”.

In a letter addressed to Carlos Lesmes Serrano, President of the Spanish Judicial Supervising Commission; Rafael Catala Polo, Spanish Justice Minister, and Emilio Moya Valdes, Chairman of Las Palmas Court of Appeal, they called on Spain’s judicial authorities to end this “horrifying humanrights violation”.

More importantly, the MEPs have voiced their concerns that “The Kokorev Case” might not be an isolated event of judicial and police abuse in Spain, and, more specifically, on the Spanish territory of the Canary Islands. Among the

infractions, listed by the MEPs were: *An undue use of preventive prison *Withholding evidence from the defence attorneys *Systematic ignoring of any evidence favourable to the accused *Lack of formal accusation after an investigation that has lasted for over 14 years *Deliberate procrastination of the investigation process”.

Aldo Pariciello said: “Failures of justice or investigation do happen sometimes, but the things occurring on the Canary Islands cannot be called a failure.

“There is a deliberate breach of basic rights of a European citizen, to whom

European laws guarantee the fastest possible and unbiased trial, and a right to fair justice.”

The special commission, to be set up by concerned MEPs, is aimed at “elucidating the responsibility of certain Spanish public servants in the systemic abuses that have and, evidently, still are taking place in the so-called Kokorev Case.

“And, also, to determine whether such abuses constitute an isolated, aberrant incident, or, by the contrary, the abuse of police and judicial power in the province of Canary Islands is a more common occurrence than we would like to believe.”

Drugs paid for part-timer’s holiday bonanza for family A PART-TIME shop assistant is accused of spending £200,000 on luxury holidays with her husband, thanks to a family-run cocainetrafficking racket.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Colleen Campbell, 33, who was employed by clothes store Matalan, was said to rely on state benefits.

But a jury was told how Colleen, and husband Thomas, enjoyed extravagant trips to Gran Canaria, Mallorca, Mexico, Egypt and Bulgaria.

Thomas, also 33, claimed to be a personal trainer. But he was pictured during his holidays “carrying a bit of weight”, the court heard.

In December 2013, the couple travelled in “premium seats” to Cancan, in Mexico, for a 10-day, £10,000 holiday, with their children, staying at the fivestar Hard Rock Hotel.

The Manchester family enjoyed luxury accommodation, including a jacuzzi and 24-hour room service,

as well as an X-box gaming console, and the entire trip was paid for in cash.

The pair are accused of laundering drug money, so they could keep living the “high life”, as well as recruiting members of their family, including both mothers, to help “wash” the money.

Between 2012 and 2016, Colleen put down cash deposits on luxury BMWs, Audis and Mercedes, using

monthly instalments to pay for each one, before upgrading to a better model.

Prosecutor Henry Blackshaw said: “This couple are a big fish in a medium pond, living well, off the back of criminality.

“They are charged with being involved in criminal property, using the cash and being able to spend it in legitimate ways.

“Together, the family

connections contributed to the way that Thomas and Colleen were living. They benefited from extreme profit off the back of illegal drug-dealing.”

He added: “Thomas Campbell and his wife participated in living the high life. They were spending very extravagantly on holidays, on cars, and on house renovations, which did not fit in with their legitimate income of a few thousand pounds.”

Theresa Bowden, 59, Colleen’s mother, and Lynn Campbell, 60, Thomas’ mother, are also accused of laundering the money.

Both Lynn and Theresa often joined them on these trips, again paying in cash at travel agents across Manchester.

A jury was told that both sides of the family had links to family members who had been convicted of possession with intent to supply cocaine.

Campbell’s brother, Lee, and his cousin, Stephen Campbell, have both been convicted of possession with intent to supply cocaine.

16 Spanish cities with harmful air pollution

A SPANISH environmental group claims that 16 cities “regularly surpass” harmful levels of air pollution, yet all but three have warned their residents.

All surpass the toxic PM10 emission limits of 50 micrograms per cubic metre, including Barcelona and Valencia, while Madrid is one of the trio owning up, says Ecologistas en Accion.

The group said in a press release on Monday: “Only Madrid and Valladolid have warned their citizens, and they have implemented traffic restrictions to combat the pollution.”

Since then, however, Barcelona has also introduced traffic restrictions in its city centre.

But it is still one of six cities, along with Getafe, Guadalajara, Salamanca, Sevilla and Zaragoza, which have also reached dangerous levels of CO2, and have “not adopted any measure to protect the health of their citizens” according to Ecologistas en Accion. The group, which has criticised the cities for “lacking both short-term and long-term solutions”, also demands immediate plans to address the situation.

‘Fake’ portrait worth millions

A PORTRAIT hanging in a Welsh castle, long believed to be a copy, has been declared the real thing by a Spanish art expert.

Benito Navarrete Prieto, a distinguished art scholar, travelled from Sevilla to North Wales on a hunch.

Now, he has established that the artwork in Penrhyn Castle was, indeed, a lost masterpiece by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, one of Spain’s greatest painters.

The 17th-century portrait depicts Don Diego Ortiz de Zúñiga, who wrote a history of Sevilla, and Benito said: “It is an absolute masterpiece. Magnetic!”

It had hung in the castle for almost 150 years and was

African migrants flooding in again

MORE than 600 African migrants were rescued off the Spanish coast last weekend, according to reports. assumed by the National Trust, which owns the castle, to be of no great value.

The Murillo was attributed to the artist when it was acquired in the 1870s, but, by 1901, it had been downgraded to the “copy” status.

There are only around a dozen known portraits by the artist, and the few existing are worth millions.

The portrait is the centrepiece of a major exhibition on the artist at New York’s Frick Collection until 4th February 2018, when it will be transferred to London’s National Gallery.

Murillo worked primarily in Sevilla until his 1682 death, at the age of 64.

Such was his prestige that, at one point, the King of Spain banned his paintings from being exported.

Wanted Brit’s decade in the sun finally ends A BRITON, on the run from police for 10 years, appeared on Monday before the La Linea Court in Cadiz, on a European Arrest Warrant.

The 42-year-old man, identified only as AJL, is accused of being involved in a traffic accident with two La Linea Local Police officers in 2007, assaulting one and injuring the other.

The Guardia Civil, who received information about his possible whereabouts

in September, made concentrated searches of the suburbs, around the provincial towns of Palmones and Los Barrios.

Officers, who eventually recognised the man on his way to a shop, arrested him immediately. They soon realised he was carrying a fake driving licence and ID card, which had been issued in Gibraltar in the name of a third party.

The cops also discovered that he had access to a number of cars, which he used, selectively, to dodge the law. But his luck ran out on Monday!

The Salvamento Maritimo first posted on Twitter that 431 people had been rescued in the SouthEastern region of Murcia in the early hours of Saturday morning.

This was followed by a number of posts about other rescues over the weekend, carried out by the Salvamento Maritimo, alongside Navy and Guardia Civil officers.

Spain is, reportedly, still the third-busiest gateway for migrants arriving in Europe, with numbers of people arriving by sea tripling over the last year.

The previous weekend, Tenerife had its first taste of African migrants for several years when 36 people, including children, were helped into Los Cristianos port in a tatty old cayuco.

Drugged-up officer caused death crash

AN officer, attached to the Guardia Civil, had high levels of cocaine in his system after causing a fatal car accident in Torremolinos.

The off-duty officer was arrested after the tragedy, which claimed the lives of three people, with three others said to be seriously injured.

A report by the Malaga Institute of Forensic Medicine (IML) revealed that the officer had high levels of cocaine in his system following the incident, as well as traces of alcohol.

The official police report revealed that it was the combination of narcotics that caused the officer’s “aggressive and euphoric driving”, and said that the accident was unlikely to have occurred otherwise.

It is believed that the accused, who failed to notice a curve on the A-7 road as it passed by Torremolinos, collided with a taxi carrying a family of Middle East tourists, who were from Bahrain and Kuwait.

Three family members were killed in the accident; two women, aged 30 and 48, and a 27-year-old man. Three more women aged 16, 18 and 50, were hurt badly and remain in hospital.

The family, reportedly on holiday on the Costa del Sol, were on their way to Marbella, from Malaga’s Maria Zambrano railway station, when the crash occurred.

The lawyer representing those injured has declared that the sum of compensation offered by the Guardia Civil, revealed to be just under 400,000 euros, was insufficient for the trauma caused by the crash.

Guardia seize coke worth 103m euros FORTY suspects, including at least one Briton, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in an enormous antidrug and moneylaundering operation, which covered Girona, Pontevedra, Madrid, Melilla, Malaga and Morocco.

Officers, who raided properties and uncovered 18 cars and 1.2 tonnes of cocaine, also detained

34 men and six women of British, Spanish and Moroccan nationalities.

A total of 13 million euros in cash was also found, while another 2.5 tonnes of cocaine were uncovered in Morocco, which means the full amount of Class-A drugs seized has a street value of 103m euros. A motor-home, and three boats used for transferring the drugs, were also seized.

Officers say the operation, run in conjunction with Europol and several other national crime agencies, has disabled an important criminal organisation based

in Spain and Morocco.

It was directed from Venezuela by a Spanish citizen, who is also being hunted down.

The gang were able to move money by using people with limited financial resources, and making them hide money among their belongings while travelling.

The investigators also intercepted more than four million euros on flights, departing from Malaga or Melilla, to Venezuela.

But how much the gang really got through Customs is almost certainly far higher.

Nothing sheepish about these so-smart animals Seat-belt cameras will catch you out

SPAIN’S new roadside cameras, which can see whether drivers are wearing seat belts, are now responsible for the issuing of 200-euro fines for those who ignore the law.

SHEEP have a highly-developed ability to recognise the faces of celebrities, according to a new study.

Although it has long been known that they are able to recognise the faces of their human handlers, scientists have now demonstrated that farm animals can be trained to recognise images of famous people.

Professor Jenny Morton, lead scientist in the Cambridge University study, said the study showed that sheep have facerecognition abilities comparable with those of humans or monkeys.

Her team trained eight sheep to recognise the faces of four celebrities: TV journalist Fiona Bruce, actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Emma Watson, along with former US President Barack Obama.

In the tests, each animal was shown two

faces, one of which was the target celebrity. It was awarded a cereal pellet if it approached the correct image.

The sheep were then put in a pen and tested on whether they recognised the celebrities without the cereal rewards… and eight times out of 10 they obliged!

It was also discovered that the sheep distinguished photographs of their handlers people with whom the animals spent two hours a day - ahead of

those of the celebrities.

They chose the reallife, familiar faces over famous people, seven times out of ten.

The scientists also believe that the sheep’s facial-recognition abilities could be used to investigate Huntington’s disease, which can cause people to lose those very abilities.

The team has now begun studying sheep, genetically-modified to carry the mutation that causes the disease.

And the Canaries, which adhere to Traffic Department (DGT) rules, are included in this clampdown.

The scheme has been trialled over the last two months in Spain, with 331 drivers at fault receiving an informative letter. Now, the first 50 cameras are in full operation, and 227 will eventually be rolled out.

From now on, drivers caught without using a seatbelt will be hit in the pocket, with notification of a fine in the post.

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) says the im-

ages captured by the cameras are subject to a “strict quality control”.

They are sent every day to the Automated Complaints Treatment Centre, where software, designed specifically for the purpose, will review the photographs.

The software will discard photographs in which it detects that the driver is using a seat belt. The remaining images are then reviewed manually.

If an offence is registered, the image is sent to the corresponding Provincial Traffic Headquarters, where it is checked, manually, again.

The vehicle owner will then receive a postal request to identify the driver who appears in the relevant photograph.

If a passenger appears in the photograph, his or her face is pixelated, so there’s no identification.

But once the driver has been identified, the 200-euro fine is issued, and three points deducted immediately from his/ her licence.

If the vehicle owner does not name the person driving, a penalty fine will be issued to him/her for not identifying the driver.

Some 60% of the cameras are located on roads with the highest accident rate, and the remaining 40% on the busiest roads.

So make sure you belt up!

Barcelona tightening its grip on terrorists FOLLOWING Barcelona’s terrorist attacks in the city centre and in Cambrils (Tarragona province) last August, extra security measures have been taken to give residents and tourists a greater sense of protection.

Spain is generally considered to have a much lower risk of terrorism than other parts of the EU, including the UK, France and Germany.

The excellent work of its Intelligence service and National Police force has led to Jihad cells being wiped out. And history backs up the city’s safety values.

That’s because the Catalonia attacks, barring the bombings by the nowdefunct ETA, were the first terror incidents in Spain since the Madrid train blast in March 2004.

But Barcelona City Council is concerned about the impact made by dramatic headlines on its international tourism in what is, statistically, one of the safest countries in the world, with one of the lowest levels of violent crime.

Christmas normally brings huge crowds of tourists,

visitors and resident shoppers into Barcelona.

And, in the unlikely event of the 17th August tragedy being replicated, the Council is looking at extra ways to protect them Trees and concrete blocks, together with hefty flower pots and planters, are gradually being installed on Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s pedestrianised boulevard, which attracts many tourists.

It runs from the city centre to the port, and the barriers make sense, because it is where a terrorist ploughed through crowds in a stolen van in the summer.

Other measures on the cards, ahead of the festive season, include pedestrianising the area around the city’s iconic Sagrada Famíl-

ia Cathedral. It is where queues stretch around the block, and spill on to the road at all times of the day, as holiday-makers wait in line to see one of Spain’s most famous attractions.

The immediate area will be closed to traffic, and fixed obstacles, such as concrete plant trays, will be installed, to prevent vehicles getting through.

Extra police will also be on duty, in addition to the reinforcements brought in permanently since the attacks.

The Council’s local security committee is working constantly on new ideas to make residents and visitors feel at ease, and, also, acting as a deterrent to potential terrorists, as well as prevention.

Chief prosecutor dies as Catalan rebels face trial SPAIN’S Attorney General, Jose Manuel Maza, who was leading the prosecution of the separatist Catalan leaders, died, suddenly, last Saturday in Argentina.

The 66-year-old, who had been attending a conference in Buenos Aires, was taken to a hospital in the city after saying he felt unwell.

He passed away soon afterwards from a reported kidney infection.

The country has now lost its Director of Public Prosecutions, just as

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was working to get Spain’s judiciary to indict secessionist leaders for declaring the region’s independence, illegally.

Last month, Maza, who was appointed one year ago, began the prosecution of 20 Catalan politicians, including their former leader, Carles Puigdemont.

Maza argued that they should stand trial for rebellion and sedition, as well as the misuse of public funds to organise an independence referendum.

If found guilty of rebellion, the separatist leaders could face up to 30 years in prison.

Train’s gem thief hunted by police POLICE are hunting an unidentified man, thought to be involved in the theft of a suitcase containing gems worth £1m.

It belonged to a 35-year-old jewellery dealer, who boarded a train to Birmingham from London’s Euston station on 8th November.

But when it arrived at Rugby, he discovered that the suitcase, complete with rubies, em-

eralds and sapphires, was no longer on the luggage rack.

Police released a grainy image of a man, taken from CCTV, and the Metropolitan Police would like to interview him.

Detective Sergeant Nick Thompson, from British Transport Police, said: “I would like to speak to the man in the CCTV images about this extremelyhigh-value, luggage theft. It was a large, black suitcase, and contained more than 40 gems.”

Driverless bus is on crash course!

A DRIVERLESS shuttle bus was involved in a crash, less than two hours after it had been launched in Las Vegas.

But police confirmed that a lorry driver, who reversed into the electric vehicle, was responsible for the prang, and that there were no injuries.

City spokesman Jace

Radke said the shuttle stopped when it sensed the lorry was approaching, only for the larger vehicle to keep going.

The lorry hit the front bumper of the bus, but there was no visible damage, and the shuttle did two more circuits of its route after the accident.

The collision happened soon after an unveiling ceremony to promote what officials described as the pilot project’s first self-driv-

ing shuttle, aimed at the US public.

A sign in the back window reads: “Look ma, no driver”. And the bus, which can hold up to 12 passengers, has an attendant and computer monitor.

But it has no steering wheel or brake pedals, and uses GPS and electronic kerb sensors to navigate the roads.

Before the crash, dozens of people had queued up for a free journey in downtown Las Vegas.

GBP recovers well

THE pound lost much of its strength at the beginning of November, but GBP was able to rebound from its lowest levels as the month progressed.

Over the past two weeks, GBP/EUR has trended between a high of 1.1368 euros, and a nine-week low of 1.1099. GBP/USD, meanwhile, has seen an even choppier fortnight.

Although the pairing fell to a low of US$1.3073 at the beginning of last week, it has opened this week’s trading around a two-and-a-half-week high of US$1.3273.

EUR/GBP fluctuated between a low of £0.8896 and a high of £0.9009, before ending last week in the middle of the range at around £0.8922. EUR/USD started around US$1.1655, hit a high of US$1.1856, and finished around US$1.1790.

The pound has had some support behind it these past two weeks, after the 2nd November Bank of England (BoE) Inflation

Report, which had caused a significant GBP sell-off.

Starting the past fortnight, markets judged that selloff overdone, and the subsequent buyback has provided Sterling with an undercurrent of support, over the past 14 days.

However, numerous political scandals rocked market confidence in the government, and its ability to deliver a smooth Brexit. Theresa May was faced with mounting pressure from within her own party to sack Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, and Secretary for International Development Priti Patel, following separate, diplomatic incidents.

In the end, Patel resigned, while Johnson remains in his post. Then, last week, it emerged that 40 Tory MPs were prepared to sign a letter of no-confidence in May. Data offered the usual ups and downs, with markets surprised to see the employment total fall for the first time in a year, while retail sales bettered forecasts.

Disappointing inflation data lessened the odds of another rate-hike, any time soon.

The euro, meanwhile, was caught between positive economic data and a lessrosy outlook for monetary policy. The latest Eurozone data continues to largely suggest that the currency

bloc economy is in robust health, and is headed for its strongest year of growth since the financial crisis.

However, the European Central Bank (ECB) is unlikely to make any positive adjustments to monetary policy for some time, somewhat limiting the euro’s strength. The US dollar has largely been stuck in an unimpressive range, thanks to odds above 90% of an interest-rate hike from the Federal Reserve in December.

However, a surprise uptick in core inflation during October helped lift hike odds even higher, nudging USD up a bit. Tuesday’s public-borrowing figures and Wednesday’s budget could have a notable impact upon the pound.

Markets will be looking for economy-friendly policies, but Chancellor Philip Hammond is likely to prioritise cutting the deficit. Wednesday also sees the release of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting minutes from 1st November, with an account of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) latest policy meeting following on Thursday.

Also on Thursday, UK thirdquarter GDP figures will be released; the economy has ground along slowly this year, so markets would like to see an uptick in the pace of expansion.

Tuesday 28th sees the US Senate Banking Committee hold a hearing on the nomination of Jerome Powell as the next Chair

of the Federal Reserve.

Should they reject him as a candidate, this would cause some volatility for USD. On top of this, there is the usual stream of high-impact data set for release for the UK, US and Eurozone.

Australian Wilderness with Ray Mears Friday 24th November, ITV1, 20.00

It’s morning in the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, the continent’s largest range of mountains. Ray is travelling through the arid grassland of the foothills to reach the top of one of the ridges. Along the way, he’ll meet some of Australia’s most iconic animals. Much of the range is grazed, and Ray meets farmer Tony Smith and his head shepherd Norton Warnest.

Tony is the fourth generation of farmers here, and Ray learns about their way of life, and the challenges of sheep farming here.

Leaving the farm in the heat of the day, Ray encounters flightless emus looking for shelter from the sun. He’s lucky he can get this close, as Emus could run away at 50 kilometres an hour! Ray reaches a waterhole in the foothills, and settles down in a hide. Again, Ray and his cameraman are lucky and they spot three different kinds of kangaroo - the Euro, the Grey and, finally, the Red. Moving higher into the mountains, Ray is looking for Australia’s largest bird of prey - the wedge-tailed eagle. In his quest, he gets a lift from bush pilot Paul O’Brien in his helicopter. Paul takes him to a peak called the Chace, where Ray hopes to spot eagles riding on the thermal currents.

On the slopes, Ray camps for the night and makes beer bread for the team on an open fire.

SUMO WRESTLING IN MONGOLIA – DEBI EDWARD: Despite being Japan’s oldest national sport, three out of the four top sumo wrestlers in the world are Mongolian. IF you have a hairstyle that doesn’t require straighteners or curling irons, then you’re going to be blow drying instead.

And there’s a technique that will save not only time, but your hair condition, too. After washing your hair with your regular shampoo, apply Argan Oil to help replace moisture, and then towel dry by squeezing (don’t rub).

Cannabis oil does the trick The largest study to date, regarding cannabidiol (CBD), has shown that many patients are finding such great relief from their ailments using this oil, that they are able to give up pharmaceutical prescriptions entirely.

The research was conducted by US-based Brightfield Group and HelloMD, and covered 2,400 of HelloMD’s community. Women made up 55% of the numbers.

Dr. Perry Solomon, the chief medical officer of HelloMD, says the main reasons people use CBD are to treat insomnia, depression, anxiety and joint pain.

“We are seeing an rap-

idly-growing rise in the interest of CBD products from our patient community, particularly among women,” explained Solomon.

“While we still have much to learn, we cannot ignore this one fact; the majority of those using CBD products today receive great benefit.

This has the potential for far-reaching consequences.”

Many of the CBD users (42%) involved in the study told researchers that they had been able to give up prescription medications like Tylenol, Ibuprofen and stronger, addictive, prescription pain relievers.

A startling 80% of those

surveyed said that they found CBD to be “very, or extremely, effective”.

Only 3% claimed they did not notice any real effect.

“This study is exciting, because it shows there is potentially a huge, barely-tapped market for CBD products that could improve the lives of many people,” said Bethany Gomez, who is the director of Brightfield Group.

“With further research and public education, CBD could be an effective alternative treatment for many people, particularly at a time when our nation is in the midst of an opioid crisis.”

What to do when stopped by the police

WE all know that the police are tasked with doing a job, and it's something that some people don't like.

However, we must remember that all police forces worldwide are there to keep the public and road users safe, wherever possible. In the Canaries, there are four police “forces”, or departments.

Policia Local These police are employed by the local ayuntamiento (town hall), and their duties are varied.

They control traffic outside, or near, schools, to ensure pupils' safety when crossing the road, as well as that of their parents or guardians.

They act as “traffic wardens” and are permitted to give tickets for vehicles parked illegally, or in an unauthorised place, for example in front of a VADO sign, or in a Carga y Descarga (not within

the permitted hours).

They are also able to call the grua, and have a vehicle removed if it is causing an obstruction.

Whilst their powers are somewhat limited, they are still able to fine you if you do something illegal or unauthorised!

They wear a darkblue uniform, with a lighter-blue label denoting POLICIA LOCAL. Their cars are white with a light-blue strip, in conjunction with their uniform.

Policia Canaria This is a relativelynew force, and, as the name suggests, only has jurisdiction within the Canary Islands.

They are often seen at road blocks, and are easily identified by their uniforms and hats which are very dark blue, almost black, and their vehicles are the same, dark colours.

Guardia Civil These police have, normally, received military training, and have considerably more training and experience than the Policia Local and Policia Canaria. They are the traffic police, normally attending

accidents, although the Policia Local may be present. Both have vans with ATESTADO on the sides, which can be described as mobile vehicles for taking statements.

Generally, in these vehicles, they have facilities to copy documents to add to any witness statements, or to confirm a person's identity. Most officers speak English, some fluently and others basic, but, as we are in Spain, it's always best to try to communicate in the language of the country in which we reside. Often, a little will go a long way.

The Guardia Civil also act as what we would know as CID, investigating burglaries, murders, sudden deaths etc. So it's more likely that residents may have been in contact with this force at some point whilst living here, either for themselves, or via friends or acquaintances.

Their uniforms are a bottle-green colour, and, in general, most of these officers are a little older than those in the Policia Local and Policia Canaria.

Policia Nacional This is the highest force in Spain, and deals with immigration, deportation, drugs etc. The officers are specialised, and not to be messed with!

Most readers will have encountered them at the National Police Station in Playa de Las Americas, when applying for an NIE number or Residencia, or, if they are of a nonEuropean nationality, obtaining a residence card (similar to a DNI).

They are tasked with transporting prisoners to court, and are often seen in large vans (heavily protected, and similar to a UK Black Maria), travelling up and down the motorway.

This is just a brief outline of the island's forces, and their powers.

GETTING ready for Christmas… just writing it gets me excited!

I mean, who doesn’t love the festive season, right? Of course, it doesn’t come without a little dose of stress and panic.

Like many of us, I have the family over. You would think I had the royal family coming, with the amount of cleaning and preparing the house gets in the build-up to the big

day. I can almost feel my mum’s eyes like laser lights, scanning the house from top to bottom, checking everything over with great detail.

I do try to get things sorted in advance, but you can get caught out. Last year, for me, it was a plate shortage. I hadn’t noticed that we must have had a few breakages during the previous months!

Being prepared is all about timing, just like the turkey.

Make yourself a little checklist now, so you’re not stressing at the very last minute.

Having owned a furniture shop for many years, it’s still hard to believe how many people rush in every year, two days before Christmas, buying dining tables,

and beds for the guest room.

Luckily, we have an immediate delivery service, but I do wonder what they would have done, had that not been the case.

As well as getting the house ready, we have the difficult task of choosing gifts. Homeware and decorative objects make great, thoughtful presents, and are very popular at Christmas.

If you want something a bit more personal, such as pictures etc., make sure you have a sneak peek at their colour scheme and taste, to get a better idea.

There are plenty of items you can find which are not so personal, like candles, outside lanterns or a nice set of wine glasses. The list is endless!

Pink Day A PINK DAY was held on 5th November at Our Place, Costa del Silencio, to raise funds for cancer charity AECC. It was a fantastic day, and well supported by customers and locals alike. Gordon Slayney and Lisa Mack compered the proceedings, with many acts giving their time for free.

Foster carers needed We do not have a refuge, so we urgently need people who are willing to foster kittens who are too young to be adopted, but need a safe place to stay until they are old enough to go to a forever home.

Also, cats recovering from surgery, illness or injury need

somewhere to recuperate.

We provide all the essentials for your foster cat: litter, food, litter tray, beds etc, and all veterinary bills are covered. We advertise and find them homes, so you do not need to do this. Please contact us if you feel you can help.

Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop.

Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm.

K9 Animal News

Morgan homed!

SHE arrived at the kennels in a terrible state, a few months ago, with a severe flea allergy which left her partially bald.

Her skin was irritated, and covered with painful lesions. And, if that weren’t enough, she tested positive for heartworm!

Her allergy was treated with flea-prevention medication, and her skin condition with a combination of shampoos, creams and spot-on oils. Once she began to recover, we really saw a change in her behaviour.

She came out of her shell, and quickly stole everyone’s heart.

Eventually, in a foster home, she made a full recovery from her allergy and heartworm disease.

Pondenco World helped K9 to find her forever home in Holland, to which she jetted off last week.

Although she is an old dear, she deserves to live out her days in a loving and carefree home. We were so happy to see her arrive safely, and await more news, once she has settled in. Good luck, Morgan!

Cash and Scots galore

week, and what a competition it’s going to be, the winner taking home 250 euros and the runner-up a tasty 150 euros.

There is also a 100-euro prize for the person who breaks off and pots all eight balls to win.

The prize will be shared if more than one player achieves the distinction.

The Cup/Plate second-round draw has also been made, as you will see on this page, and all games appear very even.

Arona’s magic Wanda!

MATCHES going to a deciding fifth set in this sport can often be less testing than Arona’s highscoring home victory.

The first set went 25-23, but that was just a warm-up for the marathon second set, which led to a 31-29 away triumph.

That could have been the springboard for a big fightback, but Arona

us pool-playing fanatics with the annual Scottish challenge to prepare for again.

The event, for our league team, is contested over three days, and it’s still taken most seriously, even though the tradition is now in its 11th year.

Sadly, we have yet to beat the Scots, and we must change the trend this time.

A big plus for Arona was the return from injury of influential Wanda Banguero, which helped them refresh the on-court line-up when the going got tough.

plaster after being injured in a previous match, may be out for three weeks.

The Tenerife squad were expected to raise their performances to compensate. But Mateusz Ponitka, with 15 points, was the only bright spot. Next on the scorers’ list were Pedro Llombart and San Miguel, with six apiece, and that’s a big gap!

The coach now has plenty of time to work on new tactics, because the next game isn’t until Saturday, 2nd December, at home against Real Betis at 8.30 pm.

The European action also resumes in December, and international fixtures this weekend mean no league action.

Longo on his lonesome Huesca 3 CD Tenerife 0

CD Tenerife review

TENERIFE, negative and short of creative ideas, gave a poor account of themselves in this defeat at league leaders Huesca last Saturday.

In the preceding week, coach Pep Marti promised new tactics for this tough fixture, but that seemed to consist of drafting in another defensive midfielder in the shape of Alberto.

Fast-breaking attacker Juan Villar finally started a game, but he played deep on the right and was almost invisible.

Longo was one of the few players to emerge with any credit, ploughing a lone furrow up front. But he never received the support he deserved, or needed!

Huesca are the league’s surprise team this season, with their small reputation and small capacity ground.

What they are big on is teamwork: doing the basics well, and playing with plenty of width and vision.

And they had the first chance as Sastre tested keeper Dani Hernandez

with a low shot. Ferreiro was probing Tenerife down their right, and, from a free-kick, he floated the ball in for Chimy Avila to head down at the goal, but Dani took it well.

Tenerife ruffled the home feathers with a ball into the box, which was missed by the keeper. But the rare chance was scrambled wide by a defender.

From another aerial freekick by Huesca, Carlos Ruiz did well to clear the danger with a firm header away.

Last week, Vitolo became the latest veteran Tenerife player to add another year to his contract. But, while experience is vital in any team, the midfield is crying out for some youthful invention.

Alberto headed over the bar from an Aitor Sanz corner, and Longo went close with a powerful flick on… maybe Tenerife were stirring, but Huesca had other plans.

The response came with a draw against the Lanzarote team last Sunday, with David Kikvidze’s return in goal-restoring confidence.

in top form. A couple of home changes at half-time gave Yaiza a boost, and Alex Yunes equalised after 62 minutes.

There was a tense finish after Marino defender Carlos Saavedra was sent off for two, quick-fire bookings,

with just over 10 minutes left. But Marino held firm for the point that keeps them in 12th position.

This Sunday, they are at home to Santa Brigida, with a slightly later 12.30pm kickoff at their Las Americas ground.

Melero, who powered the ball home. And, just two minutes later, the lead was doubled.

A loose ball should have been cleared easily by Jorge, but he slipped.

Melero pounced on the ball and squared it to Cucho, who tucked it past Dani.

The second half opened with more frustration for Longo. He had the ball in the Huesca box, and fought a vain battle with three home defenders before losing it. But where was the support?

Malbasic was having a quiet game, but one moment of magic nearly reduced the arrears. He juggled the ball and teed it up for a rasping shot, which the keeper did well to tip over the bar.

Suso, a more attacking option, came on for Alberto, and Tayron was given a chance instead of Villar. But it didn’t bring the hoped-for miracle.

A right cross from Huesca found Melero, who was tussling with Jorge.

The home player won comfortably, and nodded the ball into the net.

Fit-again Casadesus was the final Tenerife sub, taking over from Longo, and his half-chance clipped the post after the keeper had done enough to narrow the angle. Time was fast running out, and though Luis Perez pushed up and skewed a shot wide, there was no way back for CDT. Jorge’s bad day worsened with a soft booking, which means he will sit out the next game.

The result wasn’t unexpected, but the performance raised more questions about Tenerife’s style of play, and inability to change gear during a game.

They are now ninth in the league and tonight (Friday), Rayo Vallecano are the league visitors to Santa Cruz. Then comes Tenerife’s Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) second leg at Espanyol on Thursday (30th), after drawing the home leg 0-0.

EXTRA-TIME

RALLY-DRIVING: Wheels will be burning up the road tomorrow (Saturday 25th) for the annual Subida a Arico, uphill time trial, on the eastern coast of Tenerife.

This year, 90 cars will compete on the TF-625 road to determine who is fastest over three runs. Favourite is Lauren Garcia, in his Porsche, but that will simply spur on his rivals to find that extra turn of speed.

ROWING: Boats are converging on Tenerife for the last leg of their preparation for the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, which sets off from the neighbouring La Gomera island on Tuesday, 12th December.

Six solo crews, nine pairs, and one trio of female rowers, will head off on the nautical journey of 3,000 miles to Antigua.

The fibre-glass boats are being towed down through Spain to a Cadiz ferry link to Santa Cruz, before a further road trip to Los Cristianos port and a ferry to San Sebastian.

And that’s where the hard work really starts!

KICK-BOXING: Fists and feet combine for a worldtitle fight in Denmark tomorrow (Saturday), with Tenerife rooting for Maikel Garcia, the Santa-Cruzborn defending champion.

The ISKA bout takes place in Copenhagen, adopted home of Morocco-born, title-hopeful Youssef Assouik.

After yearning for a football career, Youssef switched to kick-boxing, and there’s probably a few soccer refs glad they don’t have to brandish a card to the challenger.

Naughty… but nice!

THE magic of the Cup again pitted minnows against the mighty, and again, shocks were recorded, and the biggest of all was provided by Naughty Nautas.

With their 300-plus start, they overcame league leaders Scruffy Macs, thanks to star-of-the-night Julie and Sue’s 180 playing a big part.

Boothen Crew were coasting along, 3-1 up at Marilyn’s B, until the home team found their form and took it to the last doubles.

Steve, who had already scored a maximum, hit the winning double to give Marilyn’s B a 4-3 victory.

The Pub and Gaffers played out a thriller, with The Pub scraping through by the slimmest of margins, as did Marilyn’s A on their visit to Waterfall. Loch-In B were narrowly beaten, 4-3, in their home game

by Ourplace Playboys, while Ourplace Breakaways had an easy ride, progressing through, via a bye.

Nutty Nautas had better fortune as

they travelled to Buzzing B’s and returned home with a 5-2 result. The Tavern could muster only four players which took its toll as they

were brushed aside 7-0 by a non-sympathetic Phoenix team.

Palms Pool Bar simply couldn’t bridge the gap as they started behind Legends, and eventually lost 5-2. A four-man team awaited Pas O Nadas A at Spear Chuckers. And with Richard and Steve Sub scoring a maximum apiece, it helped the visitors secure a 4-3 win.

Bar Leones had a 300plus start over LochIn A, and, although Eric and Jack hit regular trebles and Jean hit bull after bull, the League 1 boys prevailed at the end to book their place in the next round.

Women’s Football

CONFIDENT Barcelona brought just one superstar to San Isidro, but it wasn’t enough because Tenerife, with a whole squad of them, beat the league leaders.

Barely a month had passed since Barcelona’s Dutch player, Leike Martens, was crowned FIFA Best Player of 2016-2017 (some bloke called Ronaldo got the men’s award).

But she was shackled for most of this game, as Tenerife’s spirit, determination, and considerable skill guided them to a richly-deserved triumph.

Tenerife hit the ground running. Maria Jose Perez opened up space with her runs, while Cristina MartinPrieto latched on to one of her passes and gave keeper Panos a nudge.

Megan Crosson, from California, was keen to push up from left-back to prompt the attack, but she tracked back quickly, whenever necessary, to cover her defensive duties.

However, it wasn’t that simple for the home side, and Barcelona got into their stride. They forced a corner,

and the ball was hanging dangerously before keeper Pili cleared with a strong punch.

Toni Duggan, the Liverpoolborn, former Everton and Manchester City player, looked lively, but a header from her was plucked out of the air with ease by Pili.

Martens was out on the left, and not getting much change out of Patri Gavira, who limited her chances to make a goal-bound run.

There was plenty of encouragement for the home forwards, with Barcelona’s habit of passing back from a distance, leaving their keeper with a lot of ground to make up.

Maria Jose was ripping holes in the Barcelona defence, and the goal came from one of several corners. The ball was pinging around in the box, with defenders trying to clear, but Tenerife pressed down on them.

American Jackie Simpson had one shot blocked, but she fooled everyone with a clever back-heel to give Tenerife a 26th-minute lead.

This definitely wasn’t in the Barcelona game-plan, and they tried to hit back quickly.

A free-kick cleared the wall and took a deflection, but the unsighted Pili made a fabulous, reflex save to push the ball over the bar.

Alexia could have levelled

with a powerful shot, but the ball veered well wide of the home goal. At the other end, Crosson fed a perfect cross for Maria Jose to stoop for a low header, but captain Marta did enough to spoil her aim.

The first half closed with Pili smothering the ball at the feet of Duggan, and the second half opened with the keeper taking a high ball out of the air, in what was always a commanding performance by her.

Cristina won a throw-in from a close challenge on keeper Panos, and Eva Llamas drew a save from her with a low effort.

Martens, now switched to the right, won a corner that grazed the post from Duggan’s shot, and spun slowly across the goal-line, before Crosson scooped it clear.

Former Barcelona and Ivory Coast player Ange Koko came on for Cristina, and proceeded to tease the visitors on the right wing, and captain Marta had to con-

cede a corner when beaten.

Silvia Doblado picked out Patri Gavira’s head with her cross, but she missed the target.

Barcelona sub Olga Garcia fed a long ball into the path of Martens, but the pace was a bit too much, even for the award-winner.

It was noticeable that Barcelona seemed to be getting more than their share of the ref’s decisions, and Koko felt particularly aggrieved with a late offside call, and also with a couple of puzzling free-kicks against her.

Martens was now trying a more-central, front role, but she found Simpson still shadowing her, and the best she could win was a corner.

Andonova, who had arrived from the visitors’ bench, had an excellent, late opportunity, but she powered the ball over the bar.

Panos sprinted from her goalmouth to the halfway line to add weight to the final push, as the ref’s watch took its time.

But Tenerife kept their cool, and the points, much to the delight of the 1,200 crowd.
