‘It was just like The Walking Dead film’

Continued from Front Yasmin was among 40 people sent tumbling into the basement of the Butterfly Disco at 2.30am last Sunday, as the floor caved in, partially, from the stage end. Yasmin, a trainee chef who is approaching the end of her course, was at the nightclub, in the Playa Shop commercial centre, Avenida Rafael Puig, with a group of friends. The nightclub was in full swing, when a video of events shows a drag queen on stage, with a blonde wig and wearing a red dress and heels, trying to jump away as the floor collapses around him. “It was just like something from the film, The Walking Dead,” said Yasmin. “It was chaos, and everyone was bleeding, with rubble and dust all over them. “It happened so quickly, and I feel extremely lucky to have been given a second chance. But it really was horrible, and I will never forget it. “We fell through like lead weights, and, when I opened my eyes, there was no light. A girl had fallen on top of me, and my friends were close by, shouting for each other. “We were very disorientated, but, thankfully, we managed to get out after finding a padlocked door and kicking it down.” She added: “We were shaken up, so we took a taxi straight away to Hospiten Sur, al-

though there were ambulances on site for those with severe injuries.” The 112 emergency service reported that an area of 43sq/ft gave way, and the people inside plummeted into the basement. An army of medics and ambulances was on site until 6am, ferrying the wounded to hospital. In fact, nine of the injured people were still said to be in various Tenerife hospitals with bad bone fractures, as we went to press. Yasmin had an injured leg treated at the hospital after the disaster, and, on Tuesday morning, she visited Candelaria Hospital’s A & E department, because her ribs were aching and her leg was still painful. She has seen the images of the disaster, and is trying, desperately, to put it to the back of her mind. But she is still frightened to take the lift up to her home, in a fourth-floor apartment. Meanwhile, Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga has remained in contact with councillors responsible for the areas affected, and with his technical team. Adeje Council has also been in close contact with the consuls and embassies of those foreign nationals involved in the incident. Help has been offered to all those affected, and the Mayor said: “For us, what is important is the health of the injured, and the

safety of the building, and those structures alongside.” Since the early hours of Monday, the Mayor has been gathering facts to ensure that the situation will not be repeated elsewhere in the borough. He has consulted building experts, including architects, to find out exactly why the floor fell in. In addition, Rodriguez Fraga and Adeje’s Local Police Commissioner, Miguel Ángel Morales García, held a press conference the same morning to outline the actions being taken by the Council. Rodriguez Fraga said: “At 2.30am on Sunday, we were advised by the local emergencies body, the CECOES, that there had been a partial collapse of the floor in a nightclub on Avenida Rafael Puig. “We immediately activated all the necessary resources to deal with this kind of emergency: Local Police, professional and volunteer fire brigades, and the National Police. “Thankfully, there has been no loss of life, for which we are grateful, given the seriousness of the situation. But 22 people were treated for injuries on the spot, and, subsequently, transferred to Hospital Quiron and Hospiten Sur. “In the end, the number of those injured had risen to 40, with some also making their own way to hospital. The injuries

range from serious to minor, and the information we have is that no individual is in a critical state.” Later that morning, Adeje Council called in building expert Juan Diego Mayordomo to assess the structural damages. And, with the Mayor and a technical team, they visited the nightclub’s basement. Following an initial

examination, they reported that the situation wasn’t a simple matter. They said they were also aware that many people would be anxious about returning to work in the area. But the Mayor, who stressed that the safety of everyone was of prime importance, visited nearby businesses and spoke, first-hand, with workers affected by the

current closures. While Rodriguez Fraga said that it was important the commercial zone suffered the least possible damage, financially, he added: “Decisions that need to be taken, will be taken without pressure. “We have to work prudently and make the right decisions, in line with the advice given by the experts.”

EUROPEANS in Mauritania’s economic capital of Nouadhibou are there for work and to earn money, and they rarely bring their families with them.

Nouadhibou, which is the second city of this vast Saharan nation, on Africa’s west coast, suffers from frequent power cuts. And it doesn’t have a single cinema, concert hall, theatre or even a bar (alcohol is banned throughout the country). There are no decent schools, and its only hospital lacks even a rabies vaccine. But to Africans looking to make their way to Europe to create a new life, Nouadhibou’s location, 800km south of the Canary Islands, makes it the most attractive of places. This explains why the EU and Spanish authorities keep a wary eye on the thousands of small fishing boats moored there. In 2006, when Morocco began cracking down on illegal immigration, the traffic, for people seeking a new life in Europe, moved south to Mauritania and Senegal, from where Spanish territory could be reached within five or six days. Two years later, 108 rickety boats (cayucos), reached the Canaries from Mauritania. But, so far this year, not one has arrived there! The sea crossing is, undoubtedly, dangerous, yet it hasn’t stopped more than 31,500 people making the journey to the Canaries, successfully, in recent years. However, as suddenly as the exodus started, it stopped! In 2008, 108 cayucos reached the Canaries from Mauritania. So far this year, not one has arrived. It really is a poser, but part of the answer can be found in Nouadhibou itself. Mauritania is about twice the size of Spain, but has a population of just 3.5 million. The number of people living in Nouadhibou, where the economy depends on the fishing industry, varies between 180,000 and 300,000, but there are no reliable figures. Nine years ago, Spanish police began a bold initiative to try to stop people from attempting a sea-crossing to reach Spain. Authorities sent a team of five cops to train their Mauritanian counterparts, and a further 25 Guardia Civil officers joined

Nouadhibou… the perfect launch-pad for Canary Islands

“There are thousands of people who have come here with one aim - to earn enough money to get to Europe. They’re just waiting for their chance.” them, working with six more local officers. And, since then, they have operated as a single unit. Chief Inspector Ignacio Rico, who leads the team, believed the key to containing the crisis was persuading Mauritania and Senegal to accept repatriations. At the same time, the team introduced tough new laws, imposing prison sentences of up to five years on anyone involved in migrant-trafficking. As a result, the trade collapsed. But the Spanish contingency have remained, supported by a Guardia Civil helicopter, along with two 30-metre patrol boats, and a further two 15-metre vessels. But Captain Pablo Lorenzo, who has been here since 2006, believes the only way

to prevent people from taking to the seas again is by maintaining a clear, visible presence. “You have to remember that the Canary Islands are just five days away by boat,” he says. “But if you follow the route up from Central Africa that ends in Libya, it can take as long as a month to reach the European coast.” Carlos Rodríguez, a Guardia Civil attaché at the Spanish Embassy in Mauritania, adds: “If, instead of our patrol boats, we just had a semi-rigid speedboat, do you think the situation would be like it is now? “In countries like this, mistakes are costly. But if you can build up trust and create something that works, the best thing to do is to hold on to it.”

Inspector Ahmel Khaled, who heads the Mauritanian team working with the Spanish authorities, says the situation is under control, “but we haven’t solved anything in the long term”. Nouadhibou is a crossroads, with people coming and going all the time, and he confirms: “There are thousands of people who have come here with one aim - to earn enough money to get to Europe. They’re just waiting for their chance.” Ahmel Khaled and Ignacio Rico spend most of their time gathering intelligence. The Spanish team have provided their Mauritanian counterparts with the technical assistance they need to monitor the fishing fleet’s activities. At the same time, Mauritania has begun rejecting people from neighbouring countries with no paperwork, so they have no option but to return home. In 2013, it expelled 713 people, a total which rose to a staggering 6,463 last year. The Spanish and Mauritanians have created a network of informants, which keeps them up to date with what is going on along the

coastline near Nouadhibou. Winning their trust has not been easy, but, at the same time, the country’s respective governments have begun working closer, despite difficulties along the way. In 2008, democratically-elected President Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi was overthrown by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, ostensibly for reaching out to Islamist groups. Initially, the Spanish Foreign Ministry condemned the coup, but it praised Abdel Aziz when he held and won free-andfair elections in 2009. Since then, the Mauritanian authorities have worked closely with Spain. Between 2007 and 2011, Spain invested around 150m euros in Mauritania, says Francisco Sancho, who, until recently, ran the Spanish state foreignaid organisation AECID’s operation in the country. Among the initiatives funded by Spain is a 5m-euro project to distribute frozen fish to 126 stores throughout the country, and the formula is working, for now! But more and more people from Africa still want to get to Europe.

Seven died and damage added up to millions of euros, but…

Maximum Alert warning was not needed this time

TWELVE years have gone by since the Canaries felt the presence of Tropical Storm Delta. But to many, it still seems like yesterday! There was a weather alert put in place for strong winds and rain that weekend. But no one was prepared for what happened in November 2005. Seven people lost their lives, and the damage it caused added up to millions of euros. The storm was never en route to the Canary Islands. But because of its erratic, trajectory change, it transformed into a huge cyclone and hit the Canary Islands on 28-29th November 2005. America’s National Hurricane Centre ( NHC) advised the Canarian Government about a possible hurricane some three days before the disaster. But the only person paying attention was

Tomas Padron, President of El Hierro at the time. Delta hit hard and scarred the memory of many people because the aftermath of this tropical storm was catastrophic. Boats were washed up against the shore at ports around the archipelago, while, at the airports, thousands of people were stranded. Roads collapsed, and schools had to close because they had no electricity, or were flooded - or both! Since that terrible 2005 disaster, weather alerts have improved considerably, along with protocols for the public’s protection. Before Delta, there was very little protocol in place; there were no weather alerts of any type put in place for bad weather, until it had actually arrived in the archipelago. Last week, the Canarian Government declared a Maximum Alert for high winds and rain, specifically in La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera.

And when such alerts are set in place, many people recall the disaster caused by Delta, automatically, and prepare for the worst.

Fortunately, this bad weather never reached here, but AEMET (Spain’s Meteorological Agency) and the head of the emergency

services, have stated that it’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially when the health and safety of the public are at risk.

Restaurants’ starring role AFTER weeks of speculation, the complete list of restaurants awarded Michelin stars in Spain has been announced, including a handful in Tenerife. The “three-star club” has two new members: ABaC in Barcelona and Aponiente in Cadiz, Andalucia, bringing the exclusive band up to just 11 members. There are four new restaurants with two Michelin stars: Cabaña Buenavista, Disfrutar, Dos Cielos and Maralba, while the 17 new establishments

with one star include the simply-named Audrey’s Restaurant, in Calpe. As for Tenerife, two stars were awarded to M.B. (The Ritz-Carlton, Abama), Guía de Isora, while those granted one star were Restaurante NUB, La Laguna (for the

first time); Kabuki, Guía de Isora; Kazan, Santa Cruz, and El Rincón de Juan Carlos, Los Gigantes. The awards for Spain and Portugal were announced during last week’s gala dinner at the Ritz-Carlton, Abama.

Catalan voting woe

A NEW poll suggests that fewer than 25% of Catalans want to continue seeking independence from Spain as regional elections loom.

Just 24% of locals, polled by Metroscopia, said they would want to seek secession after the 21st December elections, while 71% said they would prefer politicians to reach an agreement which includes Catalonia remaining part of Spain. The poll also revealed that pro-independence parties might fail to retain an absolute majority of seats in the Catalan Parliament. The recent telephone survey covered 1,800 Catalans, but an outcome is difficult to predict, given its 2.4% margin of error, with support split evenly between the two sides. Losing the majority in the regional parliament would be a heavy blow for Catalan separatists, who have billed the election as a vote on Madrid’s decision to impose direct rule in October. Secessionist parties are forecast to win 46% of the vote, down slightly from 47.7% in a previous, 2015 election. Unionist parties combined would account for another 46% of votes, up from less than 40% last time. Whatever the result, turnout for the election is predicted to reach a record 80%.

Spanish economy yet to find equality level

THE Spanish economy is on the mend, unemployment is falling… and the number of people at risk of poverty is also coming down. At least, that is what appears in the European Commission’s 2018 Draft Joint Employment Report. But, despite the positives, the Commission’s report has also given Spain a failing grade when it comes to income equality, describing the situation as “critical”. That means it is “much worse than average, and, either not improving sufficiently quickly, or deteriorating further”. The Commission has criticised Madrid for the failure of its poverty-reduction policies to make a significant impact. This places the country in a bottom group of poor performers, which also includes Bulgaria, Lithuania and Greece. Across the whole 28-member bloc, the richest 20% of the population had a dis-

posable income which was around five times higher than that of the poorest 20% in 2016, according to the Commission report. In Spain, however, this figure was slightly above six-and-ahalf times. And despite the country’s economic recovery - the national economy outperformed expectations to grow 3.2% in 2016 - the Commission highlighted that the country had yet to recover the equality levels seen before the crisis. In total, one-third of EU countries have not recovered this pre-crisis equality level, according to the report, which analyses 14 social indicators, from youthunemployment levels and the gender-employment gap, to school drop-out rates. Spain appears to have improved in terms of digital competencies, and for compensation for hours worked. “Recent gains in employment have not been distributed evenly among different population groups,” says the report of the EU as a whole. “The gap in employment rates between low-skilled

and high-skilled workers is large (31%), underlining the need to invest in skills to respond better to changing labour-market needs. “The persistence of relatively-large income inequalities, often linked to unequal opportunities in access to education, training and social protection, and reflecting poor labour market outcomes, raises concerns in terms of fairness, social inclusion and sustainable growth,” the report’s authors go on to say. In terms of poverty risk, Spain has actually improved its record in recent years, but remains on the watch list. The country’s performance, concerning employment, has been noted as “weak, but improving”, while the report notes that the number of “quasi-jobless” households remains a high 14.9%. The Commission also criticises Madrid for the failure of the Spanish Government’s poverty-reduction policies. Social transfers (“social assistance provided by public and civic bodies to those living in poverty, or in

danger of falling into poverty”) reduced monetary poverty by just 25% in Spain, before taking pensions into account. That figure is too close to Bulgaria and Greece, and a long way from the 50% seen in Nordic countries. The report calls on countries, including Spain, to introduce a raft of measures, including improving the design of tax and benefit systems, ensuring access to quality healthcare and promoting gender equality. Spain’s school drop-out rate also comes in for criticism. At 19%, this is a long way from the 10.7% EU average, while the number of young people who are neither working nor studying is at 15%, 4% above the EU average. On the plus side, Spain appears to have improved in terms of digital competencies, and for compensation for hours worked. The country also ranks well in terms of the number of children under the age of three in formal childcare, and in self-reported access to healthcare.

Horacio is given new lease of life A KENYAN youngster has had a lifechanging operation, after experiencing a decade of embarrassment, anxiety and deformity. It all started when Horacio Owiti Opiyo, an orphan who was about 10, noticed something strange on his genitals. Doctors treated the growth as a cyst, which never existed. Yet the growth became larger and larger, to

the extent that he developed a penis measuring one metre in length, with testicles weighing an astonishing

5kgs. The deformity meant he was unable to lead a normal life, but Horacio, known as Forence and now 20, simply couldn’t afford medical treatment. Apparently, the young man’s rare condition was caused by a mosquito bite, which injected parasitic worms into Forence’s bloodstream, blocking the body’s drainage system. Doctors believe this is why Forence accumulated a huge volume of liquid on his genitalia, and developed a disease known as scrotal

elephantiasis. A close friend decided to take some pictures and post them on social media to raise awareness for Forence, who used to hide behind closed doors while suffering enormous pain. Now, thanks to his pal, who highlighted his condition, and his many followers, Forence has now had an operation, which offers him a new beginning. He is now a happy young man, wearing normal trousers… and making plans for a bright new future.

Short-story competition

Corina tops prize list WINNERS of Adeje secondary-schools’ short-story competition, which commemorated International Day Against Violence Against Women, were named last Saturday. “Gender violence is a scourge which must be eradicated, root and branch,” was the over-riding sentiment voiced at the event. The short-story jury praised the level of participation as one of the highest since the competition began. And fourth-year students at IES El Galeón secondary school excelled by taking the top three prizes. Corina Linarea Quinteros shone brightest, with Nicole Almeda Ehemann second and Agustina Kasperskas third. In the art competition, the winners were judged on relevance to originality, artistic quality, technique and sensitivity. There were a number of

successful artists, especially winners Paola Blas, Lilia Piva and Natalia Llamas (IES Adeje) for “Amar te duele”. The work “Freedom”, by Anna Sosina and Paola C. Tunarosa, from the Costa Adeje school, was second, and third prize was for “Speak your mind”, by Rafael Hernández Pérez, also from the Costa

Adeje school. Artists who concentrated on the theme of treatment practices were also rewarded. Both events were designed to raise awareness among young people of equality and respect, among the sexes and genders. “Sadly, the statistics are horrifying, with an average of 50 women killed in Spain as a result of gender

violence annually, and over 700,000 reports of violence and abuse,” said Adeje’s Equality Policies Councillor Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro. “That means we have over 700,000 abusers in our society, too.” She reported that just hours prior to the event, another woman had lost her life, bringing the number to 45 in 2017.

“Unfortunately this is only the tip of the iceberg, and is an indication of the kind of suffering many thousands of women are enduring day after day, too often in silence, without the means to escape,” added the Councillor. “This is why Adeje Council works to sow the seeds of change to overcome this problem. This is a job for all social agencies, to work to prevent and to care for those women who are suffering as a result of gender violence. “We mustn’t forget that the children in families are suffering, too. So our work must be in training, awareness-raising events and activities in our education centres and workshops. “And, also, we want more events such as this one. What we want is that students think about the theme, and put into words and colours and shapes what they are feeling and thinking. “After all, they are the future of our society!”

Gemma scales the heights for charity GEMMA HassenBey, a Paralympic athlete with 12 fencing medals, spanning five consecutive Games, is also the first woman to have climbed to a height of 3,000 metres by using her arms only. Wheelchair-bound Gemma, aged 50, was determined to reach her goal by climbing Mount Teide recently, to raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Her solo attempt, with the collaboration of Adeje and Arona Councils, was also backed by the “Walk for Life” organisation, aimed at the prevention and fight against the dreaded disease. Proud Gemma, from Madrid, will now be a patron for this year’s 13th annual Walk for Life, and a presentation takes place today (Friday) in Siam Mall, at 11am. The campaign was organised by Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), and Guardia Civil officers stopped the vehicle at 9.20am at a roadside checkpoint in Béjar, near Salamanca, on its 30km route. The 41-year-old driver was charged, and the bus was immobilised.

Association of Women with Breast Cancer in Tenerife, and the AECC (Spanish Association Against Cancer). Arona and Adeje Councils both offer care and support for cancer patients and their families, ranging from free transport to

hospitals to rehabilitation, and they also offer psychological help. Don’t forget, this year’s Walk for Life takes place on Sunday, 17th December, starting from Siam Mall. And remember to wear pink, or you’ll stick out like a sore thumb!

Santiago Lions are a shining example SOME years ago, the Lions Club of Santiago, with Town Hall help, started the tradition of erecting The Tree of Light in the Plaza Buganvilla, in Los Gigantes. For the first couple of years, Lions members raised enough money to cover the cost of ThirdWorld cataract operations. They were playing their part in an international Lions Club effort, which, in a few years, raised enough money to perform over seven million eye operations! The support received by the Club was fantastic. At Christmas time, most people like to do a little something to help others less fortunate

Doped-up bus driver

than themselves, and the concept was, and still remains, simple: one light, purchased on the Tree, remains lit throughout the festive season, and is dedicated to the memory of a loved one no longer with us. Each donation is then used to support the cause nominated for the current year. And, in 2018, the Lions have decided to put all monies raised into their fund for helping many families in Santiago del Teide. It means the families can supplement the purchase of basic food and household commodities. For seven years, the Lions have issued coupons to some 120 local families,

who can use them in nominated supermarkets. To date, the Santiago Club has handed out coupons worth a total of more than 50,000 euros. This has been raised through various functions held by the Club, including regular weekly quizzes, gala dinners and markets. Thanks to the Town Hall’s support, the Club has its own Lions Store (Almacén) below the Centro Medico in Puerto de Santiago. It carries a huge range of quality, used-clothing and household items, at incredibly-affordable prices, which bring in a revenue that goes straight back into buying more food vouchers. This, incidentally, is only

a part of the Lions Club’s efforts to help local people. Many times, those who are struggling have been referred to us by the Social Services department, in cases where the local government is not empowered to help. Club officials never give out details of their help, because they are always mindful that privacy must be protected. However, the sort of help the Club is often asked for ranges from paying for a child’s school meals, to covering the cost of specialist medications, which are not subsidised by the state. And one of our mottos is: “ordinary people doing extraordinary things”.

A HUGE stash of hashish, weighing 1,110kg, was discovered by National Police during raids in Benalmadena, near Torremolinos, on the Costa del Sol. Weapons, cash and other effects were also found, following an international drugtrafficking probe spanning more than a year, which led to a 49-year-old Danish man being detained on Monday. The man’s home, as well as a transport company’s headquarters, were also raided, sparking eight other arrests in Denmark, concerning the operation. The investigation began in September 2016, when Danish authorities requested cross-border surveillance on a Dane, thought to be in Spain for drug-dealing. Police believed he was organising the transportation of drugs, using vehicles run by a Malaga-based firm, and shifting goods from the Iberian Peninsula to Denmark. The National Police, working closely with their Danish counterparts, were authorised by a local Torremolinos court to go ahead with the raids. A large stash of kronor, Denmark’s currency, and documentation relating to the scheme, were found alongside the drugs and weapons.

British airlines to get back-up, if necessary

Jorge Toledo, Deputy Minister for European Affairs

SPANISH authorities say that it will have a back-up aviation deal with the UK, in case of widespread disruption to post-Brexit air travel. Jorge Toledo, Deputy Minister for European Affairs, said that if an EU-UK aviation deal did not go through, Spain would have its own, to ensure the constant return of British tourists. “If there isn’t an agreement, then we will have a Plan B ready,” said Toledo, 52. “It would be necessary to work on a European solution, and also on a national-based solution.” Airlines tend to make their flight plans one year in ad-

vance, so Spain still has about four months to see if a back-up plan will be necessary, said Toledo in an interview in Madrid. As Brexit talks stall, Spain wants to protect its tourism industry, which drew 18 million Britons last year. Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary warned in August that airlines would be “screaming blue murder” next year, if a wide-ranging deal on aviation hadn’t been reached. Spain fully supports the European Union’s chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier. But a collapse of the talks would threaten tourism and commercial links. This would include the role played by Spanish firms, such as Banco Santander SA and Iberdrola SA, in the UK economy.

Graffiti man’s warning for fellow street-artists

A GRAFFITI artist compiled a video using his own graffiti images, which he posted on social media to try to alert fellow “graffiti artists” of the “dangerous hobby”. The 26-year-old, now full of remorse, is anxious to get the message across about how damaging and dangerous this “hobby”

can be, when practised illegally. He was actually caught by the police, named, and, eventually, fined heavily. When the case was put together, police matched up examples of graffiti scattered over Santa Cruz, from the Las Teresitas beach to Las Ramblas. A calligraphy expert was brought in to help with the case, and, for each piece of graffiti connected to the man, he received a 600euro fine.

The man is now collaborating with the cops, as well as with Zieda Gonzalez, Santa Cruz City Hall’s Citizen Security Councillor, and both parties are happy that he is working with them. Cllr Gonzalez said it made her happy that graffiti artists were not only aware of their misdemeanours, but were finally facing up to the consequences. She was also delighted to be rewarded after a lot of work and dedication.

Ancient tomb vandalised with Harry Potter sign

A MEGALITHIC tomb in Vigo, Galicia, which is 4,000 years old, has been vandalised with the “Deathly Hallows” symbol from JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series. The symbol, which represents the “Resurrection Stone,” the “Cloak of Invisibility,” and the “Elder Wand”, was spray-painted on to the ancient monument, along with the word “Always”. The ancient monument, considered one of the top tourist attractions in the town, is renowned example of a megalithic stone building from the Spanish occupation by the Moors. The tomb, said to be on private property, is managed by local officials. And authorities are on the hunt for the culprits, who could face a fine of up to 150,000 euros.

Should you cash-in a ‘gold-plated’ pension? By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

WOULD you prefer £300,000 now, or £10,000 a year, for life? This is a similar dilemma faced by many Britons with “final-salary” pensions, where employers guarantee a minimum, inflationlinked income throughout retirement. Today, many pension providers are offering high pay-outs, “transfer values”, to give up those “goldplated” rights. While there is no correct answer here, it is important to take extreme care. Start by considering six key questions. What is your pension worth? A final-salary pension worth £15,000 seems modest, but, with today's transfer values at up to 40 times the income due, this could represent a pay-out of £500,000+. Properly managed, this could provide a retirement income that well exceeds the original, annual payment.

However, if your combined UK pension benefits (excluding the State Pension) exceed the UK's £1 million lifetime pension allowance (LTA), charges of either 25% or 55% apply, depending on how you access your funds. With transfer values so high today, these penalties could potentially be triggered when cashing-in a pension valued at £30,000. Do you have other resources for retirement? Is your transfer value high enough to outweigh the benefits of drawing an income for life? Or will other pensions, savings and investments provide for your future? If your pension is a large part of your retirement wealth, you are unlikely to benefit from replacing it with a one-off reward. How long do you need it to last? Final-salary pensions provide income for as long as you live; that could be 30 years or more after retiring. Only consider cashing-in your pension if you do not expect to outlive

your resources; those in good health may prefer the certainty of a lifetime income. How stable is your pension scheme? The cost of financing pension benefits has soared, as assets underpinning them - mostly UK bonds - have underperformed amidst ultralow interest rates. Many providers are vulnerable, facing significant shortfalls in funding payments. Higher-than-usual transfer values can offload future pension liabilities, and avoid a BHS-style collapse, where thousands of ex-employees had their pension benefits diluted. While the government's Pension Protection Fund offers a safety net, it

currently only compensates up to £34,655 a year at age 65. Where pension benefits are worth more and the scheme is vulnerable, consider transferring. What will happen when you die? Most final-salary pensions only pass half the value to your spouse on death, then go no further. Transferring your funds can unlock more estate planning flexibility, including the option to pass on pension funds to other heirs, even across generations. What is your appetite for risk? Final-salary pension benefits are protected; even if the value decreases, providers must meet guaranteed payments. Once transferred, you gain more control over how to invest and access funds, but they become vulnerable to unpredictable markets; even bank deposits can diminish through inflation. And, without proper guidance, you risk losing everything to unregulated investments or pension scams. Whether you should transfer

a final-salary pension depends on numerous factors, and your unique set of circumstances and goals. While taking regulated advice is compulsory for benefits worth £30,000+, it is an important step for anyone considering their pension options. Remember, if you cash-in your pension, you cannot reverse your decision. Look beyond the temptation of large, pension pay-outs, and take specialist advice to fully understand the long-term implications, to do what is best for your financial future. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. The X Factor The Final

Island Medics

Monday 4th December, BBC1, 09.15

This brand new series for BBC One transports viewers behind the scenes at the UK’s most remote hospital - the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick, Shetland. Here, doctors and nurses work alongside GPs, paramedics, coastguard, lifeboat crews and police to provide emergency and medical care to the islands’ 23,000 residents, as well as workers from the surrounding oil and gas rigs and cruise tourists. Surrounded by the North Sea and closer to the Arctic Circle than London, Shetland throws up unique challenges for this tight-knit team. Today Brian, an ultrasound engineer on an oil rig, is airlifted by helicopter to the Hospital with suspected serious neck injuries. It’s an urgent case for Dr Kushik Lalla (pictured) and his team in Accident and Emergency because, aside from his potential spinal injury, Brian has a worryingly low heart rate which requires thorough investigation. Coastguard and Lifeboat teams are scrambled to the aid of a pleasure boat whose propeller has been caught on a rope just feet from Shetland’s jagged rocks. And the ambulance team race to the aid of a former nurse with a suspected stroke, who isn’t too keen to return to the hospital she worked at for four decades.

Saturday 2nd December, ITV1, 19.05 & Sunday 3rd December, ITV1, 19.15 This year’s X Factor comes to a close this weekend with the series Live Final. Each of the remaining contestants are all one step away from winning a life-changing record contract and being crowned 2017’s X Factor winner at this year’s final. The final contestants will perform over the weekend in front of the judges and a live audience in the hope of impressing viewers at home who will be voting for their 2017 champion. Over the final weekend an outstanding line-up of guest stars will perform.

This time they are heading East, to sample a supersized retirement in China. The group is staying in the capital of the Sichuan Province, Chengdu. A bustling city of over 14 million, all the group find the language barrier difficult and Miriam in particular struggles with the regional cuisine. A swim in a high-tech pool in one of the world’s biggest buildings makes a bad situation worse, as Miriam discovers a modern China at odds with her memory of it from a trip 30 years ago. After experiencing city life, the group opt for an overnight stay in a country retreat. A ride on a high speed Bullet Train takes them up into the mountains surrounding the city. At a local sanctuary, home to the Giant Panda, a feeding session leads to an emotional moment for Miriam, while Rosemary can’t quite understand what all the fuss is about. Back in Chengdu a final night at the Sichuan Opera gives the group an opportunity to reflect on their bewildering and dazzling time in China.

Ray follows the Frankland River into the heart of Walpole Forest - two hundred square kilometres of wooded wilderness in Western Australia. The forest is 65 million years old, and has always provided food and shelter for aboriginal people. Ray is seeking out giant trees, and the creatures that live among them. He starts out his journey by canoe and meets Gary Muir, a local guide and conservationist. Ray learns from Gary that the river was once used by loggers to transport jarrah wood, which is so hard it was used as cobbles for London streets in Victorian times. Ray strikes away from the river to look for giant tingle trees, and meets some well camouflaged geckos along the way. Some tingles can be 24 metres in girth, and they grow alongside karri trees, which are some of the world’s tallest!

Tuesday 5th December, BBC2, 22.00 Anne’s new car propels her into the limelight as the Mums try to get in on her new car pool. Kevin finds himself in the new role of confidant as Amanda shares a deep secret. And Liz and Julia’s friendship is under fire as Liz realises she is just a ‘mum’ friend. Motherland isn’t the public face of motherhood, it’s unromanticised parenting: competition, cafes full of kids, and lunch in dog poo bags. Motherland (6x30’) is written by Graham Linehan (Count Arthur Strong, Father Ted), Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Pulling), Helen Linehan and Holly Walsh (Dead Boss). It is a co-production between Delightful Industries and Merman and is Executive Produced by Richard Boden for Delightful and Clelia Mountford for Merman.

Catching a Killer Channel 4, 21:00

CW

It’s the early hours in Milton Keynes when a single bullet is shot through an open window in a quiet suburban street. Its victim is a 19-year-old boy. No one is seen. A frantic 999 call is made as the only witness desperately tries to resuscitate the boy and begs for the police to arrive more quickly. ‘There’s blood in his mouth’ he screams through his tears. With exclusive access to Thames Valley Police, this documentary follows this tragic murder case as the police attempt to piece together the events that led up to that fatal shot. With the suspect still at large and live firearm missing, time is of the essence for the force and they must act quickly to track down the killer. But is there more to the case than meets the eye, with a potential second suspect?

Colour chameleons hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot

SPORTING shorter hair normally goes hand-in-hand with one thing, and that’s colour, and it can look boring and uninteresting without it. I like to give short-

er hair one block colour, as hilites can look patchy and not striking. And that’s the key word; to oomph your look, your cut can take a variety of subtle-to-

striking, block shades. If you opt for a new, shorter look, team it up with a colour that’s going to enhance the cut. Bolder colours work better; this season sees pastels still

continuing, as do icy blondes and cool browns. Don’t be scared to experiment on short hair, as it will soon grow out of this hair length. Keep your shorter hair

cut regularly to maintain the shape; normally after 5-6 weeks should be enough. Shorter hair needn’t be masculine hair, and it really can set off your best, facial assets.

Get the Markle sparkle By Carl pattison

LIKE her or not, she’s going to be part of your fashion wardrobe for a long time to come.

Meghan Markle has, this week, exploded on to the pages of every magazine and paper, because she’s now, officially,

become part of the British Royal Family. Engaged to Prince Harry, the actress and humanitarian will set the Royal fashion scene ablaze. She’s what’s needed, to bring the vavoom back to the fashion scene. Since the passing of Diana, we have lost our Royal fashion icons. Meghan will set that right, bringing her

Hollywood glamour, and mixing it with her new, Royal status. Be prepared to see the fashion stakes go up a notch, when Meghan really comes to town. From her chilled-out, casual chic, to her high-end fashion, I’m sure we’ll be seeing looks that will turn heads, and fashion to copy, from our new, Regal Duchess. Watch this space!

Lifestyle

IF you live in Tenerife, chances are that you may have a regular stream of visitors throughout the year, but never more so than at Christmas. While we yearn for cold weather to make things more Christmassy (just for the day, of course), people back home seem to love the idea of spending the festive period in the sun. Make sure you do a bit of decluttering and cleaning, and prepare your rooms, as first impressions count. Use fragrant candles or air fresheners, so that the house smells lovely when they arrive.

1st December - 7th December 2017

Festive guests

We can become so familiar with our surroundings that we don’t notice them, so check that your curtains aren’t looking tatty, or that there isn’t a lot of personal stuff lying about. If you are lucky enough to have a spare room to offer your guests, you can ensure that you meet all their requirements by thinking about what they need. If they are only here for a few days, they may not need to unpack everything, but some hanging space for those special outfits is always welcome. Ensure that there’s enough light for them to read, and that it can be turned off from the bed, and perhaps a clock so they can keep track of the time. Don’t forget to air the room if it isn’t used regularly, and put some fresh sheets and towels out. Bearing in mind they will be in strange

surroundings, allow for some sort of nightlight for negotiating their way to an unfamiliar bathroom during the night. If you don’t have a spare room, consider a sofa bed. Nowadays, they can be as comfortable as a normal sofa, and as a bed as well, since the mattresses are generally made of memory foam. If you hurry, you may still have time to get a new one! Make sure you have a sufficient number of pillows and enough bedding, and try to make some space for your guests to store their belongings. Obviously, people who stay up latest and get up earliest should be the ones to sleep in the lounge on the sofa bed! Also, ensure your guests have access to a mirror, and maybe a fan if the weather is going to be hot. Make sure you have adequate supplies of

tea, coffee, cereals etc., and perhaps explain when the kitchen and bathroom will be available to them. For example, if you will be having a lie-in, tell your guests: “We won’t be up until 9am, so please feel free to make yourself some tea before we get up.” So, whether you need more pillows, bedside

lamps, blackout curtains or a new sofa bed, get organising now so that you won’t have to be in a mad rush a few days before. This will give you the chance to relax and enjoy your time with your loved ones, and, above all, remember that it’s you they have come to see. A little preparation can

go a long way, but, once they are here, go with the flow, and ensure you enjoy their company, knowing that you have sorted everything well in advance. All the items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, who will come to your property. Call them on 922 789 729.

Single cause of happiness

How many of us secretly yearn for the single life, where we can please ourselves instead of others, and go through the day without someone irritating us to distraction? Eminent psychologist Bella DePaulo says that the idea of wedded bliss is nothing but a myth. “Being single allows people to live their best, most authentic and most meaningful life,” she says. She wanted to challenge the idea that getting married helped people live longer, happier and healthier lives. “Research comparing people who

have stayed single with those who have stayed married shows that single people have a heightened sense of self-determination,” said Professor DePaulo, of the University of California, Santa Barbara. “And they are more likely to experience a sense of continued growth and development as a person.” Other studies suggest that single individuals value purposeful work more than married people do. Another research of single people found that selfsufficiency is their strength; the more self-sufficient they

were, the less likely they were to experience negative emotions. Interestingly, the opposite was true for married individuals. Being single is what actually makes you more confident, happy and mentally healthy, and you are more likely to experience a sense of continued growth and development as a person. Those without a partner have stronger bonds with their parents, siblings, neighbours, friends and coworkers, and, in addition, it turns out that they are healthier as well.

Merry afternoon for charity fund-raisers A SUPERB afternoon was provided on Sunday by a host of entertainers, performing for free in the name of charity. They raised an astonishing 3,039.50 euros, with 50% funding a bus for sufferers of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease, to transport them, regularly, to a day-care centre. The other half was donated to children’s charity Helping Hands. The event was staged at The Merry Monk, in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, featuring Christopher James as Neil

Diamond, Ged Bolton as Rod Stewart, and Adrian Brooks as David Bowie,

along with Barry G, Hayley Butler and Darren Clarke. Laura Doris Day compered the first part of the afternoon, with Steve Billy Idol taking over for the rest of the day. Also boosting the total were raffles, auctions and a tombola, plus Guess The Name Of The Teddy, and a barbeque. The organisers offer grateful thanks to everyone who donated prizes, the list being too long to name individuals, plus all the helpers, and, of course, everyone who turned up to support the venture.

Cats Welfare News

Christmas dangers WITH Christmas just around the corner, it's a good idea to start thinking about how the festive period affects our beloved cats. We're all familiar with the dog campaign that tells us that “A dog's for life, not just for Christmas”, and the same applies to cats, of course. One of the most poisonous plants for a cat is the Poinsettia. If you do acquire one, you'll need to put it well out of reach of kitty, as any nibbling could be fatal for them. Holly, ivy, mistletoe and yew are also poisonous, and any ingested fibre or sap from these plants could prove fatal. Real Christmas trees are mildly toxic to cats, although the sharp ends of the needles normally stop them trying to eat them. Once your tree is decorated with lights and baubles, it'll present a huge temptation as a plaything. Many cats will try to climb (pulling it over in their attempts), or view the shiny decorations as toys, and may pull them off to chase around the room. Christmas-tree lights can also present a hazard, as your cat will probably get an electric shock if it chews through the thin wire. Try to keep your cats to their normal diet over Christmas. No doubt they'll appreciate a little bit of turkey, which will be absolutely fine for them, but don't try tempting them with pâté, prawn cocktail, or sausages wrapped in bacon, as any sudden change to a cat’s diet can result in an upset stomach. Keep your kitchen door firmly closed if you've left out the remains of the turkey, or anything else your cat fancies snacking on. Even if he doesn't normally jump on work surfaces, he may become very determined to sample the delicious food.

Meet Bagpuss! This beautiful boy was left behind when his owners moved, and is looking for a new home. He is 3-4 years old, vaccinated, neutered, microchipped, and leukaemia negative. Weighing an impressive eight kilos, Bagpuss has a lovely, playful temperament, and would make a fabulous pet for someone! Every cat goes on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you've made the right decision. All cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www. cats-welfare-tenerife.com/ pets. Ring or Whatsapp Sharon on 662 52 40 06 (seven days a week 9-6pm), or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm, on 6712 82773. Message us on Facebook, or contact us on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. Foster carers needed We do not have a refuge, so we urgently need people who are willing to foster kittens who are too young to be adopted, but need a safe place to stay until they are old enough to go to a forever home. Also, cats recovering from surgery, illness or injury need somewhere to recuperate. We provide all the essentials for your foster cat: litter, food, litter tray, beds etc, and all veterinary bills are covered. We advertise and find them homes, so you do not need to do this. Please contact us if you feel you can help.

Rowing

Oardinary Boys, George and Oli, take on Atlantic PITCHED up and down by huge waves, muscles aching, fit to burst, and not a spot of land for miles… that’s the Christmas and New Year menu planned by George Randell and Oli Granville. They will be making the 3,000 nautical-mile journey from La Gomera to Antigua, in the Caribbean, in a rowing boat crammed with enough dried food for up to 60 days. With just each other for company, they will defy their chosen team name, The Oardinary Boys. The soothing sun and gentle breeze of Los Cristianos lulled them into a blissful state, and they swapped plane for ferry to catch up with their fibre-glass boat, at the La Gomera port of San Sebastian. There were relaxed and exchanging good humour, born of a childhood friendship, growing up in London, which continued through studies at Oxford University. But that could change! “One of our worries is how we will cope with the loneliness of the open

sea,” George confided. “The conversation may get a bit strained between alternating two-hour shifts of rowing, and limited sleep breaks in the small cabin at one end of the boat.” Both have experience on the water, but nothing like the annual Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, which, this year, features nine other pairs, six solo rowers, and a female trio, all setting out from La Gomera on Tuesday, 12th December. Oli, who has sailing experience, describes

himself as the navigator, with George, a college rower, as the engine. They decided on the challenge as long ago as March, after being inspired by meeting Ben Fogle, who completed the race in 2005. The pair began training during the Isle of Wight’s Cowes Week, at the end of July, and had regular sessions at Burnham-onCrouch, Essex, rowing to Poole and Chichester. Oli admitted it had been a steep learning curve, adding: “Most of our

training has been in cold weather, wearing oilskins, and we have made lots of mistakes, trying to pull everything together with sponsors and promoting ourselves. “And we are thankful to our families, who have been a big team behind us.” Apart from testing themselves, the boys have two charities to inspire them. Against Malaria Foundation is a charity admired by George, particularly. “They do amazing work and keep

their costs so low. They have just two regular staff,” he said. Oli has personal reasons to favour Alzheimer’s Research UK. “My grandparents suffered and it was something I was aware of as I grew up,” he said. There are lots of up-front costs for entering the race, but the boys have covered all those, and have already raised £20,000 in sponsorship to share between the charities. But they aim to make much more. Donations can be made via their website www. theoardinaryboys.com Now, they are knuckling down to intensive training off La Gomera, and the prospect of a trip with minimal radio contact, a support yacht 3-4 days away, and a daily burn of 6,000 calories each. George, who celebrates his birthday on 30th December, said: “I have a few cards and letters to open, and Oli’s gran has made a cake, complete with icing, which will be a relief. “Pork scratchings are a good way to reload calories, so we are carrying a lot of them. But I’m sure we’ll soon be sick of the sight of them.”

CD Tenerife review

On-song Longo’s a double saviour

SPLAT the Rat, and it’s not just an arcade game because it also seems to be the nature of Tenerife’s form. As soon as they hammer down one problem, another rears its unwanted head. Longo added more polish to his recent shining displays, scoring twice, but a changed defence leaked alarmingly. Juan Villar went off with his fourth injury of the season, and five more bookings sowed seeds for future suspensions. Coach Pep Marti’s selection was pre-determined to some extent. Aveldaño stepped in for the suspended Jorge Saenz in the centre of defence, and Inaki was a safer bet at left-back than the just-fit-again Camille. And Aitor Sanz was playing much deeper to help the defence, allowing the full-backs to push up. But

CD Tenerife 2 Rayo Vallecano 2

it didn’t work. From the off, Rayo exploited the flanks and got in behind Tenerife’s rearguard. Dani had to see off a Embarde attempt, just before the visitors took a sixth-minute lead. Carlos Ruiz lost the ball with a casual clearance, and Chori squared it to Aguiere, who had plenty of time to tap it in. Tenerife worked hard to get back on terms, and an Avedaño shot hit the bar,

just before Villar had to give way to Casadesus. Moreno could have twisted the knife, but a weak strike off a clear chance was a relief to the home fans. Aguirre, who was enjoying his evening, had the home defence at full stretch before they cleared his latest attempt. The Second Division is blessed with some fine goalkeepers, who all play a blinder against Tenerife, and

Basketball

Lost four, shown the door! BOSNIA coach Nenad Markovic was bounced out of his coaching role at Iberostar Tenerife, during a league weekend break for international action. Nenad arrived in the summer, and, although he had the team purring in European Champions League qualifying games, a run of four, straight, league defeats sealed his fate. Former coach Txus Vidorretta, who left Tenerife in the summer to take the reins at Valencia, proved a tough act to follow. The latest coach, Greek Fotis Katsikaris, flew in on Monday night, arriving with a reputation as a strong-willed, experienced coach with 150 Spanishleague wins to his credit, when guiding Valencia, Bilbao, and, most recently, Murcia. An intensive week ahead followed with coach and players getting to know each other on the practice court, before resuming league action at home to Real Betis, tomorrow (Saturday) in La Laguna.

Carlos was no exception. As Tenerife pinned them down for three consecutive corners, he turned aside a low shot, and made a world-class, pushover, reflex save from Csadesus. Carlos Ruiz made partial amends for his earlier gaff, by robbing Trashorras in a dangerous position. Longo had been his usual, hard-working self in the first half, with limited support from Juan Carlos Real and Tayron. Five minutes after the restart, Tayron earned his corn with a lovely cross from the right. It was met by Longo, who craned his neck to equalise with a header. Tenerife were charged up now, and bearing down on Rayo. But a counter-attack caught them cold, as Moreno rounded the defence and set up Comesaña, to restore Rayo’s lead after just two minutes of home parity.

Tayron nearly repeated his earlier trick with a neat ball to Longo, whose feet were a little less willing than his head. Malbasic replaced Juan Carlos and gave Rayo problems. Longo should have laid the ball off to him when confronted by two defenders, and Malbasic also erred with a poor, hopeful pass into empty space. Comesaña was sent off for a lunge at Aitor Sanz, and, a few minutes later, Acosta came on for Vitolo to fuel the charge against the short-handed visitors. Clocking up the air miles for the Honduras national team could have left Acosta tired, but he actually added an instant spark, his creative flair exciting the 11,040 crowd and lifting his teammates. Ruiz came up for a corner and Acosta swung the ball out to him, but it was another soft shot at Carlos. The keeper had to work a bit harder to deny Malbasic, but his save was another class stop, matched when he turned an Acosta strike aside. But with 86 minutes gone, and time ticking away, Tenerife secured the point their improved second half deserved. A bit of head-tennis saw Aveldaño knock the ball on to Longo, who nodded in his seventh goal of the season. That leaves Tenerife in 11th position, with a clash at Almeria on Sunday, at 7pm.

EXTRA-TIME

At least one Tenerife player was given a chance to drop hints to the new boss last weekend. Fran Vazquez celebrated his call-up to the Spain squad, by top scoring with 15 points in their qualifying game for the 2019 World Championships.

It didn’t prevent Spain from losing 79-66 against Montenegro in Burgos. But Spain got it right two days later, beating Slovenia 92-84, again in Burgos, with Fran providing another another eye-catching display, scoring 11 points.

FOOTBALL: CD Marino were in good company at the weekend, because most of the Tercera Division, Group 12 matches were suspended on Friday after storm warnings from the emergency services and weather authority AEMET. Fortunately, all was calm, but it was too late to rebook match officials and away transport. Marino will pick up their season at Lanzarote on Sunday, at noon. MARTIAL ARTS: Take a ceremonial bow, the 13 Tenerife youngsters who went to the Chinese Martial Arts World Tournament in Villarreal, on the Spainsh mainland, and came back with 11 medals. The Canarian Federation of Taichi, Kung Fu and Whusu organised the trip, and were proud of the haul. Monica Hernandez, Fernando Fariña, Eugenio Hernandez and Noe Molina led the way by winning respective classes in their chosen disciplines. But top marks to all involved.

Why The Pub’s booming! BOOM-BOOM went the room when The Pub took the trebles to earn a fabulous 5-3 win at Boothen, after a night of brilliant arrows. Even closer was the game at Scruffy Macs against Pas O Nadas A, with the usual 180s coming from Daddy Cool and Stevie Sub, followed by a 113 finish from home-boy Tom. However, Pas O Nadas shone through in the 701 game, to ensure a share of the spoils. Sundowners and Waterfall played the threesome game, and, in a nail-biter, the home team took the match 5-3. Wayne, for the visitors Loch-In A, got his team off to a great start. But the experienced Phoenix Bar team, especially with their fin-

ishing, took the next five. Wayne and Paul, with sets of 14, 16 and 17 darts, won the doubles. The final game went to the visitors, for a respectable 5-3 defeat. Palms Pool Bar welcomed Gaffers, and were happy to get one more point than anticipated in their 7-1 reversal. A big hand to Clouseau’s, whose three players managed to push Bar Leones in a hard-fought game. But manpower took its toll, and a 5-3 defeat was hard to swallow. Sandy’s, looking for top spot, beat Red Devils 6-2, while Legends kept up with a 5-3 win over Ourplace Breakaways by finishing first in the trebles. Nauta Nomads thought they had done enough to win, until the fourman Buzzing B’s team found success in the final game for a 4-4 draw … and a consolation of knowing that the fewer

Six points and one aim

New faces off to a flier Avarca Menorca 2 Arona Tenerife Sur 3

SMILES are part of the team kit for Arona Tenerife Sur, as their return to the Superliga gets better and better.

AFTER a week off to catch their breath, Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife roar back into league action with two games, which could boost them into the top five, from their current eighth position. They are away at CFF Madrid on Sunday at 11am, and there’s a chance they can win over some new fans, because the match is live on TV Canaria. Then, on holiday Wednesday (6th Dec), the ladies are at home against Sporting

Huelva in San Isidro, kick off at noon. There has been such a buzz around the club, following their 1-0 defeat of Barcelona at home, two weeks ago. America Jackie Simpson was voted the league’s player of the weekend for her goal, and her outstanding defensive work. But the squad have their feet firmly planted on the ground, and are aware that they have a lot of work ahead, to build on the recent successes.

They showed stamina and determination to come from behind, after a deciding set at Avarca Menorca to win 3-2. Two new players joined the Arona squad, Nira Perez and Ana Correa. But it’s going to be a hard season, and a bigger squad will prove vital as the campaign wears on. Arona made a good start, taking the first set 25-19, before their hosts hit back 25-16 and 25-17, to set up a test of character. Arona rose to the challenge, taking the final sets 25-23 and 15-12. This lifts Arona into sixth place in the league, and

tomorrow (Saturday), they are home to Barcelona’s CV San Cugat, with a 6pm start at Los Cristianos sports centre, by the outdoor

swimming complex. Coach Romina Lamas will be looking to her players to continue their fine run of form.
