Our traffic problems have to be untangled

Continued from Front So much so that on Monday, at Costa Adeje’s Gran Hotel, everyone signed a manifesto, including several councillors, aimed at the Canarian Government, demanding action to combat drivers’ daily nightmares, morning, noon and night! The meeting was called by CEST, the Circle of Businessmen and Professionals of the South of Tenerife. And its President, Roberto Ucelay, on behalf of those who signed the manifesto, stressed: “The image of our tourism destination is getting progressively worse, as a result of these problems.” The manifesto calls for authorities to act now to resolve the issue of weary commuters, confronted by hideous traffic-jams. It also underlines the need to improve travel between tourism zones and residential areas, such as the TF-1 motorway and access roads, with short-term solutions to ease traffic-jams now, together with longterm, sustainable plans. Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodriguez Fraga, accompanied by local Councillors Ermitas Moreira (Tourism) and Manuel Luis Méndez (Development), said: “We have signed this manifesto, which is vital, urgent and opportune. We need to call attention to a problem, which is now at a dramatic stage, here in the South of the island. “That’s because it is causing suffering for residents, businesses and everyone who, on a daily basis, has to put up with these serious transport and connectivity problems.” He added: “In this document, we are asking some very specific questions, which need immediate answers. “They point to issues that must be part of a better and more thorough planning process, which we haven’t

seen to date, because these traffic problems are growing, day by day, and will continue to do so if nothing is done.” The Mayor also pointed to the on-going work that he and his local government are doing to upgrade and improve Costa Adeje, and the South, constantly. But the benefits, he said, were totally undermined by the growing traffic problems, that require policy decisions and planning, which is out of their hands. The manifesto includes: *A third lane on the TF-1, from Las Américas to Armeñime *An urgent decision on works to the San Isidro and Las Américas links *A new link to Los Cristianos must include a third lane, to be given priority status *A solution to the TF47 issue in Alcalá *Finish the Ring Road But these demands aren’t necessarily new because CEST held a meeting in October 2016, also on the same lines. Several representatives at this week’s CEST gathering were also there, agreeing with much the same suggestions. They proposed a temporary solution to solve the TF-1 traffic jams on the South motorway between the Las Chafiras and Las Americas links, to the Canarian Government, the Cabildo and the municipalities involved. And Roberto Ucelay argued that it was pos-

sible to implement 11 measures to ease the traffic jams, at a reasonable cost. To avoid queues at the entrance of Los Cristianos going North, CEST suggested giving priority to vehicles entering from the TF-1 from Adeje to reach the first roundabout, rather than the current entry, from Arona - and from Santa Cruz. The Circle also proposed that Council technicians study how to prioritise the transit of vehicles on the roundabout below to go to Arona, since existing traffic stops at this point. Another idea was to give preference to vehicles leaving from Los Cristianos by Juan Carlos I Avenue, to Arona and Santa Cruz, so that the right lane, closest to Guaza, was delimited by a solid line. Also proposed was the possibility of using the route included in the partial plan to have a third, straight, exit lane on to the motorway. In addition, CEST said it understood that reducing the size of the main roundabout in Los Cristianos would earn more circulation space. As for the tremendous traffic jams at Las Chafiras, coming from the Adeje direction, CEST said that an underpass below the main roundabout, serving motorway traffic as well as those driving up from the coast or the two golf clubs, would provide the perfect solution, although extremely costly!

Yet the Canarian Government launched its 32m-euro project in August for a full-scale transformation of all roads affected, to be constructed in stages. But it could take years to complete, from the look of it, even though it would be built in stages. The seemingly-complicated road lay-outs, including three roundabouts, would do away with the main traffic bottlenecks in the

South, said the Government. Right now, they cause kilometre-long jams around this section of the TF-1, going down to the two Golfs and up to San Miguel, featuring an average of 75,000 vehicles a day. This area, comprising one of the highest build-ups of traffic on the island, was a top priority for the Canarian bosses. But even five months

ago, it was working against the clock to put the project out to tender before the end of the year, to fulfil a commitment to the public. The main construction, it said, would be a huge roundabout in Las Chafiras over the TF-1, replacing the existing one and displaying three-lane segments, which would be new to Tenerife. Its fast-access lanes would allow easy entries for drivers to other areas in the municipality, without having to use the roundabout. They would also make it easier to get to the industrial estate. Since its August announcement of the scheme, however, it seems that the Canarian Government has released no further information about its seemingly- complex plans.

Car-park poser in Las Galletas

THERE is huge uncertainty among shopkeepers, bar-owners and locals in the busy town of Las Galletas about the car-parking situation there.

A huge area of waste ground, which is privately owned, beside the sports

centre, has provided a handy parking lot. And it is thanks to the owner of this area, and two other large spaces, that the public have somewhere to park their vehicles. Yet this site, which is the focal point for many drivers because of its position, could be closed at any time,

leaving visitors and locals alike scrambling around to park up. It would put some people off from even driving into the town, and would almost certainly affect businesses and residents alike. Arona Council is said to have agreed a two-year contract with the owner, and, possibly, an extension,

which is reassuring for those concerned that they are safe, for now! The parking area will be maintained for public use, with pot-holes being filled in, and sink-holes levelled off. As the land is rustic and privately-owned, the ground will be improved, but only as a temporary measure.

As for the other two carparks, one, at the El Fraile end, opposite the marina, is used for an occasional fairground. The third one, at the other end of Las Galletas, is deemed controversial because of the unauthorised use by owners of campervans, which occupy so much space.

VW chief is sent to jail over emissions scandal AN American court in Detroit sentenced former Volkswagen executive Oliver Schmidt to seven years in prison on Wednesday for his role in the German car-maker’s “dieselgate” emissions scandal. Schmidt, who led Volkswagen’s US regulatory compliance office from 2012 to March 2015, was also ordered to pay a 400,000-dollar fine. The 48-year-old, the second VW executive and most senior employee to plead guilty, is among seven current and former VW chiefs whom US prosecutors have charged so far.

In exchange for his plea, federal prosecutors dropped multiple counts of wire fraud, which carry a maximum of 20 years in prison. And Schmidt has agreed to be deported back to Germany after completing his sentence. In August, the same court sentenced James Liang, a VW engineer who had cooperated with investigors, to 40 months and a 200,000-dollar fine for his role in the affair.

Volkswagon admitted in 2015 to equipping about 11 million cars worldwide with defeat devices, including some 600,000 vehicles in the US. They enabled the company to deceive motorists and emissions’ testers, yet emit up to 40 times the permissible levels of harmful nitrogen oxide during actual driving. A study, published in May, found that excess nitrogen oxide from improperly-

configured diesel vehicles had contributed to about 38,000 premature deaths worldwide in 2015. The scandal has, reportedly, so far cost the auto giant as much as 30bn dollars in fines, settlements and remediation. Prosecutors said Schmidt had participated in “one of the largest corporate fraud schemes in American history”, and led efforts to cover up the company’s misconduct in the summer of 2015. Schmidt travelled to the US as the scandal was breaking on a mission to lie to US and Californian authorities, so that Volkswagen could obtain regulatory approvals to sell 2016 diesel models in the US, said prosecutors. “Schmidt sent detailed updates to VW management in Germany, informing them of precisely what he had

said, and making it obvious he was following the deception and deceit script which VW, with Schmidt’s input, had chosen,” charged prosecutors. Defence lawyers, who sought a 40-month jail sentence and 100,000-dollar fine, said Schmidt’s participation in the conspiracy had not occurred until nine years after it began, and that he had expressed remorse. But, in March, VW brought an end to Washington’s criminal pursuit of the company, agreeing to pay 4.3bn dollars in civil and criminal fines, and plead guilty to charges that it had, likewise, defrauded the US and violated the Clean Air Act. It’s not closure, though, because VW continues to face legal challenges in Germany, and elsewhere.

Major shock: Gibraltar could miss the benefits

GIBRALTAR is moving towards an exit from the single market, missing out on benefits from a transition deal, according to Spanish Government sources. Spain was, effectively, backed by the EU in April over its long-standing, territorial dispute with

Gibraltar, and in Brexit negotiation outlines. The 27 member states noted that unless the UK reached an agreement with Madrid regarding Gibraltar’s future status, it would be outside any future trade deal. Reports say that a Spanish Government source now feels that any deal on a transition period, to soften the blow for the UK leaving the single market. was included in this stipulation.

But Spain believes that Gibraltar will fall out of the single market on 29th March 2019, and the Government source told English media: “The situation with Gibraltar is crystal clear. “It became associated with the EU project because of its dependence in the UK, but this will stay until March 2019 only. “When the UK leaves the EU, Gibraltar will leave with the UK. Drug-dealing’s a family affair AN army of officers from the National Police have arrested a five-strong family of drug dealers, following complaints from local residents in La Linea’s Las Palomeras area, on the Costa del Sol. In all, 35 cops took part in the arrests after

raiding a number of houses and unearthing quantities of cocaine and heroin, as well as two working pistols, along with some that fired blanks. One property was used for cutting and packing the narcotics, while two others, which

featured a number of security features, acted as a “24-hour shop” for those buying the drugs. Two men and three women, all related, were arrested and imprisoned without bail, following a court appearance.

Spanish retail figures falter SPANISH retail figures fell in October for the first time in over three years, with sales in Catalonia dropping sharply after its independence referendum. The vote prompted a stand-off with the central government, which then took control of the region. The crisis hurt many of Catalonia’s economic sectors in October, with car sales, job-creation and hotel-stays all under-performing the rest of the country. Spanish retail sales fell 0.1% in October from a year earlier, after increasing by a revised 1.6% in September, said the National Statistics Institute. Nearly 3,000 companies have moved their legal headquarters from the region since the vote.

Hiker rescued on Teide

Security cameras for Las Americas, at last

LARGE and small businesses have been asking for security cameras to be installed around the Las Americas area for nearly a decade, especially around the Las Veronicas area.

And their request has finally been granted. It is considered one of the busiest areas in the A GERMAN hiker, aged 65, was rescued after falling badly while trying to climb Mount Teide on Monday evening. Teide’s emergency-services crew, who were alerted just before 6pm, found him two hours later, about 150m from the Alta Vista refuge. The rescue was well planned, a fireman reaching the injured man via the cable car, while a makeshift path up “White Mountain” was created so that medics, and the Red Cross volunteers, could reach him in the latter’s 4x4 ambulance. The man, who injured both arms and legs, was transferred to Belevue Hospital, in Puerto de la Cruz, for further treatment.

No hiding place for Pole!

He was trying to catch a flight to London, but the officers thought he looked shifty, and discovered there was a European warrant out for his arrest. Polish police had issued the order to detain and return him to his homeland, because he had a prison sentence to serve.

It adds up quickly for bright-spark students THREE Canarian students will compete in the 22nd Mental Arithmetic World Championship in Kuala Lumpa, Malaysia, next Saturday and Sunday (910 Dec). Thousands of children from all over the world will gather there to test their adeptness at mental arithmetic, and their nerve. It is estimated that over 11,000 students will be taking part. The Canarian trio, all from Gran Canaria, are Sergio Rodriguez Suarez, Javier Burnable Garcia Del Carpio Ojeda and Víctor Espinosa Ocio. They have been competing regionally during their 2016/17 school year, winning through to an international test after achieving

extremely high scores for their speed and capacity of mental arithmetic. A spokesperson for the Canarian UCMAS (Universal Concept of Mental Arithmetic System) said: “We are extremely proud to have participants in these worldclass competitions, especially having these three bright children. “Their fantastic results

have backed them up, and we wish our trio of clever Canarians the very best of luck!” Young Canarians have a history at this championship. In 2011, Martina Diez, who was just eight, came 15th. And the following year, Nisha Belani was 13th, while Abdellah AkHouch achieved 15th place in 2015.

Adeje’s 18th-century altar-piece restored

Recycling the imagination! THE seventh annual Adeje Cacharro competition, in which school children and their families were asked to create a doll/ image/gadget using recycled materials, has ended. The prize-giving event, held in the Cultural Centre, was attended by Cultural Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, along with the town’s rubbish collection company UTE Ascan Torrabonaf, who, together, collaborate for the competition. All children from the borough’s public primary schools were invited to participate, and, said the councillor, there were 200 entries this year, with the winning 36 pieces, produced by CEIP Fañabé, currently on display at the Centre. Alonso Ferrera said it was gratifying to see families come together to work on the project, adding: “The idea behind the project is to

recycle, but also to promote participation, engaging whole families in the educative process.” The theme of this year’s competition was “recycled art”, and each school was allowed to submit a final 12 works for consideration. From those, the first, second and third places were chosen by an independent jury, with three other schools highlycommended. The first three each received a voucher to buy school materials. worth 40, 25 and 15 euros respectively, with the commended students receiving a diploma. Winners chosen were judged on artistic creativity, technical complexity, the use of recycled materials and the attention to the theme. RESULTS Winner: Naia Blanco Cruz (CEIP, Adeje Casco). Second: Ioney Toledo Mendoza. Third: Ángel Alejando Arellano Sánchez. Commended: Alice Luchetti, Iker Pérez Mora and Adriana Barrera Rodríguez.

THE restoration of the 18th-century altar-piece, dedicated to the “Virgen del Rosario” in the Adeje parish church of Santa Ursula, has been co-financed by the local Council and the Cabildo.

Heritage Councillor Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, said: “For our local government, the conservation of our heritage has been of continuing importance as our history, and it is something we value. “We understand that if we don’t place any value on the past, we cannot build a solid future. And, for many years, we have underlined the importance of restoration and recovery of items of historic interest of the borough.” The inauguration of the newly-restored altar-piece, which took place last Saturday, was accompanied by a short concert of sacred music with the Reyes Bartlet group, who specialise in music for these occasions. This is a baroque altarpiece of the ‘Virgen del Rosario’, built in 1744 for Antonio de Herrera y Ahala, the Marques of Adeje and Count of La Gomera. It was constructed using particular wood techniques, incorporating polychrome and gold, and gold alloys. A technical report by a professional team, under the direction of restorer

Elisa Campos Dominguez, said: “The main support structure was in good condition, solid and strong. But there was deterioration on some of the inferior moulding near the base, which was loose. “When we began the work, there was no evidence of the active presence of wood-eating insects. A number of pieces and some moulding was missing, primarily at the base of the altar, where we also noticed extra nails and cracks in the wood. Some of the polychrome was also in a poor state.” During the conservation

and restoration process, the team worked “to return the work to its original state”. At the same time, they halted any deterioration, while staying true to the original. The team also reinforced the mouldings, which had come apart from the wooden support, and they replaced missing pieces, which were reintegrated, using resin. The old oxidised varnish, which covered the polychrome surface, was removed and repainted where needed, using colours compatible with the original.

Horrific reason for a flat’s half-price rent A WOMAN has advertised her flat for rent in a trendy suburb of Valencia at half the going rate, and there is a chilling reason for that. An advert, posted by Cathy, a middle-aged “Anglo-Saxon” woman who works at a local school, read: “Apartment for rent in Calle Sueca, Valencia. 580 euros a month.120sq/m, 4 bedrooms, second floor. In September, there was a murder in the

flat. That’s why it’s cheap.” In fairness, some neighbours say the owner has been too honest about the rent reduction. But others are furious, telling El Pais newspaper: “We’re all trying to put this behind us, and we don’t understand how an educated person like this woman can do something like that.” The advert has since been removed from

the Idealista website. The flat’s previous tenant was a Swede, Pierre Danilo Larancuent, who murdered his boyfriend, a 42-year-old hairdresser, by stabbing him through the heart before chopping up his body and hiding the torso in a suitcase. At the time, a downstairs neighbour said he saw a red stain appear on his ceiling. Police said the murderer cut

up his victim, Alberto Enrique Ferrer, in the bath, before getting rid of the body parts at different rubbish pick-up points. Once the suitcase was found, police officers traced bloodstains back to Larancuent’s apartment. When two policemen asked him to identify himself, Larancuent stabbed one fatally through the heart before the cops shot him dead.

Bank robbers who created a big stink A GANG of robbers, who used dog poo to distract bank staff in a series of heists, have been busted in southern Spain. Police, who arrested the five-man group after a Cartagena bank robbery was caught on CCTV, revealed their unusual method. They posed as strangers and entered the bank in a series of disguises. The heist began when one them, discreetly, dropped a pile of dog excrement on the floor of the bank near the entrance. He then spoke loudly to attract the attention of both customers and bank staff, while the rest of the group got cracking. Police said: “They each took a different role. One was in a suit, another dressed as a youth in a hoodie and baseball cap, one was an old person, one a woman and another had his hair up in a ponytail.”

When one robber started complaining loudly about the mess on the floor, shouting, ‘What a disgrace; don’t they do any cleaning?’, the bank manager came out of his office to deal with the fuss. This enabled another thief to get into the office, to help himself to everything he could. The group then left the bank calmly, and went their separate ways. The gang comprised three Colombians, one Mexican and a Cuban, aged between 21-61. But the National Police intercepted their

getaway, in two vehicles, quickly, after they had, recently, identified the way they operated by choosing banks near main roads to enable speedy escapes. Those detained have more than 25 previous arrests between them, and various false identities in the police database. It is alleged that in separate robberies, the gang have made off with 64,000 euros in Guadalajara, 42,000 in Albacete, about 13,000 in Toledo, 10,000 in Valencia, 7,000 in Cartagena (Murcia) and 5,000 in Cadiz.

Lions’ party is streets ahead! THIS year is the Centennial anniversary of the International Lions Clubs, and each club throughout the world was asked to hold a special celebration to honour this great occasion. Tenerife Isla Sur decided to hold a “Street Party” for many of the children, of different ages and abilities, whom the club has supported in recent years. The party, held on Tuesday in front of Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, was a resounding success, with more than 100 children and carers enjoying the dancing, singing, eating

and entertainment. Veteran Lion Norman Goodall said: “As President of the Tenerife Isla Sur club, I would like to express my thanks and admiration to Prakash and the team for all the hard work that went into the organisation, which made the event such a success. “The smooth running of the day was due to our very reliable supporters, who included some students from Wingate School, along with members of the Indian Community. They all played a valuable part in the happy occasion.” Norman added: “I want

to thank the Mayor of Arona and members of his Council for the permission and co-operation, which enabled us to hold this ambitious event. “Not only did all the guests enjoy the party, but so did the helpers, the DJ, the photographer and the balloon artist. Many members of the public asked our members more about the amazing things our club does, and what it stands for. “It was a tremendous way of celebrating 100 years of service to our community, so thank you, once again, to everybody concerned.”

A YOUTH was seriously injured in a gas explosion on Tuesday at his Los Realejos home, on the North side of the Island. The incident happened at around 12.25pm, and the

Migrants won’t take a hint

THE deadly MoroccanSpanish migrant route is increasing in popularity, as Spanish coastguards, who rescued seven boats last Saturday, will confirm. Over 150 migrants were pulled from the dangerous waters of the Gibraltar Straits, including women and children, the majority coming from Eritrea, The Gambia and Senegal. In fact, the number of migrants making this particular crossing has tripled this year, mainly through continued instability in parts of the Middle East and Africa. There are also reports that sub-Saharan migrants have been kidnapped and sold into slavery in nearby Libya. Tragically, three bodies of migrants were recovered

from the Straits earlier that week, but Spanish coastguards also saved two migrants in the rough waters between Spain and Morocco. The men were rescued by helicopter, one being picked up, clinging to a half-sunken rubber dinghy, while another helicopter recovered the second man as he swam nearby. “One of the men rescued said there were originally six men aboard the boat, so, possibly, one is missing,” said a spokeswoman for the lifeguards, adding that the search was continuing for the sixth man. At least 3,000 migrants and refugees have died crossing the Mediterranean so far this year.

Football President is threatened with jail SPAIN’S state prosecution is demanding four years behind bars, and an 11meuro fine, against businessman and CD Tenerife football club President Miguel Concepcion.

Historic claims of fraudulent invoices, for passenger-fare subsidies on his now defunct Islas Airways, have now reached the stage where La-Palma-born Concepcion can be called to make his statement. Charges refer to the 20082011 period, when Canarian residents were allowed 50% discount on flights and ferries between the seven islands and mainland Spain. Passengers pay the cheap rate, but the balance is paid to the travel companies by Spain’s Promotions’ Ministry. In 2011, the Islas Airways company was denounced, formally, by rival companies, after submitting claims for non-existent passengers. The company, which

struggled for years, ceased trading and flying in 2012, but the case has rumbled on. Concepcion, 64, made his name in the construction business, working for his father’s company, which built the longest road on La Palma. After moving to Tenerife in 1983, he started two building firms, and cofounded Islas Airways. Later, in 2007, he took over as President of CD Tenerife. He reduced a 60m-euro debt to its current 13m, and gave the club a season in Spain’s top league, La Liga, playing against the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Concepcion has always had a frosty relationship with the Tenerife fans, yet he sailed through a Presidential challenge last year, because of his dominant share-holding. Alongside this, he also kept a financial interest in hotels and radio stations, although his building firms have struggled. After the current legal threats, Concepcion again denied the claims, saying he was confident that justice would be done.

‘Magic’ skin machine was complete rip-off A POLICE probe was sparked when a woman suffered burns to her face after receiving treatment at a beauty clinic for skin rejuvenation. The damage was caused by a costly electrical device used at the clinic, which involved lights being beamed on to her face to regenerate the skin tissue. The person, who imported the devices from China, sold them at beauty fairs, and on social media, for 15,000 euros each. She would show the buyers fake authenticity certificates, along with

fake safety certificates, stating that they had passed the quality tests. Police, who traced her to Pontevedra, in Galicia, North-West Spain, confirmed that the imitations were of an extremely high standard, and that they even deceived professionals at the clinics where she sold them. Investigators discovered that she had been importing the devices for the best part of three years, with a wide distribution across Spain, and in Tenerife, especially, where she had built up a lucrative trade. She has now been arrested in Pontevedra for fraud, and for falsifying documents.

The event, from Adeje to Arona as usual, takes place on Sunday (17th Dec), leaving Siam Mall at 11am. It is celebrating its 13th consecutive year, having moved South in 2009, thanks to the co-operation of the two municipal councils, as well as Tenerife Cabildo and a number of private patrons. Their united goal is to raise awareness and funds for research into breast cancer, and for those organisations working with individuals and

families affected. All money raised from the walk will go towards cancer associations such as AECC and AMATE, which always need funding. With the current political system, they receive less help than ever, and, even more than before, they need extra support to be able to do their work, assisting and helping those affected, as well as their families. Participants can register online now, and, also, buy their pink T-shirt at Siam Mall, where the Foundation has a special

stand for this purpose. And Walk for Life organisers are delighted to confirm the presence of wheelchair-bound Gema Hassen-Bey as this year’s Grand Marshall. Gema, a Paralympic fencing medallist, who has appeared in five Games, and is also a mountaineer extraordinaire, said she accepted the offer to participate, because of “the very special hugs” she had received from an individual after a conference on cancer. She told the press and public that she had also

been diagnosed with breast cancer a year later, but had even scaled Mount Teide recently, adding: “Today I am here to hug back.” Elena Cabello and Amada Trujillo, respective Arona and Adeje Health Councillors, pressed members of the public to join the walk, letting them know that El Mojón, the new, public hospital in the South, has a complete oncology treatment unit for cancer patients. Amada said: “We hope our patients can soon attend hospital here in the South, so they needn’t suffer the trip to the North in search of treatment.” Brigitte Gypen added: “Come and walk, and bring your friends and family, plus your pets. We will have a bus for those who have reduced mobility, or who get tired during the 4km walk. “There will be many surprises, a raffle, and lots more, and please remember to wear pink!”

Jobless cheats raked in one million euros

POLICE have arrested 32 people on suspicion of defrauding a total of more than one million euros in unemployment benefits in Gran Canaria. The accused, allegedly, benefited from Social Security funds, designated for the unemployed and those in need, while pretending to be employed by companies which didn’t actually need, or use, their services. The firms involved in the plot were said to have taken on more people than they required, so they could claim employment subsidies, while, at the same time, the workers also received unemployment benefits. Companies also, allegedly, broke the law by failing to pay into the Spanish Security System for the socalled workers. Those arrested were accused of forging fraudulent documents and scamming money from public funds.

May’s against the the Spanish rebels P-P-Pick up a rare P-P-Pet! OCCUPANTS of Madley Park House, a carehome in Witney, Oxon, enjoy regular animal therapy sessions with dogs and other pets. But they really did receive an eye-opener when a local zoo arranged for penguins Charlie and Pringle to P-P-Pop in for the afternoon, with children from two local schools joining in the fun. Activity co-ordinator Carly Willimont said: “It’s always such a joy to see how residents react to the animals.

“And while we love bringing animals of all shapes and sizes into our homes to put a smile on our residents’ faces, this visit was extra special. After all, it’s not every day you get to cuddle a penguin.” Residents, highly-amused, and some bemused, were able to hold and feed the penguins, and studies have shown that caring for an animal can produce health benefits. Care-quality director Jo Blackburn said: “We have a number of regular ‘pat dogs’ that visit our homes. And many include people with their own pets… generally rabbits and cats!”

SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who visited No.10 Downing Street on Tuesday for talks with British counterpart Theresa May, expects the next stage of Brexit negotiations to be imminent. “I am absolutely convinced

that, as soon as possible, we will get into the second phase of Brexit negotiations,” he told Mrs May, who assured him of her support for his stand against the Catalan rebels. She was reiterating her support for his Government’s approach to containing the separatist movement, adding that it was important for the law to be upheld, and the Spanish constitution respected.

But a small group of Catalan-independence supporters held up signs backing a “Catalan Republic”, outside the gates of Downing Street. She failed to secure a deal on Monday to open talks on post-Brexit free trade with the EU, following the withdrawal of DUP (Democratic Unionist Party) leader Arlene Foster’s support, which upended Mrs May’s slim, Parliamentary majority.

Travis makes it so simple to translate LANGUAGE barriers could be broken down completely, via Travis the Translator, a new device which is capable of interpreting 80 languages in real time.

With more than 42,500 people around the world forced to flee their homes each day, the device is set to provide much-needed assistance to organisations which help those affected by the refugee crisis. More than 200 devices have been donated to Movement on the Ground, an organisation that supports refugees, and the same number has gone to Open Learning Exchange, a UN programme aimed at improving access to basic education. But Travis the Translator has also raised concerns. Could it provide an alternative to learning a language? Will devices like it replace professional

translators and interpreters? It works on a simple premise: two people who speak different languages put in an earpiece, which, almost instantly, translates the conversation. Jorge Arús, Vice-Dean of Innovation and Technology in the Philology Department at Madrid’s Complutense University, believes devices such as Travis the Translator are about making the speaker feel more secure. “They help get rid of the fear of speaking a foreign language in another country,” he said. Multi-nationals are also interested in Travis, and, said sources at the global

company: “International companies such as IKEA have shown interest in our product; they think it will help their staff at international meetings and on business trips.” Meanwhile, Google says that it has already sold Google Pixel Buds to companies based in Europe and South East Asia. Most instant translation devices cost around 200 euros, but more affordable translation apps, such as Speak & translate, iTranslate and Skype Translator, are also gaining popularity. Industry representatives argue that their products are especially useful for travel, allowing users to find out about the local food and attractions. “If you’re going on a short trip, are you going to spend months learning a language you will use for a week? Most people don’t have time to do this,” say the makers of ili Wearable Translator. Sonia Prats, Director of Language Studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, said: “Language is much more than putting across a concrete idea.” And while Sonia recognises that these systems could help

people when travelling, she feels they will never replace “the real need to communicate with other human beings”. Jorge Arús doesn’t believe that instant translation devices will prevent people from learning languages, but he is sure that “people could learn more, having been exposed to the language by the device”. But new technology continues to advance rapidly. “We are in a boom era for artificial intelligence,” says Juan Salvador Castejón, spokesman for the general council of Spain’s IT eng i neeri ng associations (CCII). “The specialist in voicerecognition s y s t e m s claims that technology has “evolved more quickly in the last year than in the last five,” he said. Indeed, Alfonso Ureña, President of the Spanish Society for Natural Language Processing, says it is “only a matter

of time” before translation programmes become perfect. But while voice-recognition technology is extremely advanced, it is not at the same level as human communication. The devices still make mistakes when it comes to context, or translating phrases. Google translate, for instance, will literally translate “high five” to “cinco altos”, instead of the Spanish chócala. But if instant-translation programmes continue to improve at the same rate, some people expect big changes. For example, Salvador Vaticina, an interpreter in the European Parliament, could be replaced by one of these devices. But Eugenia Arrés, Vice-President of Spanish Association of Audiovisual Translators (ATRAE), be-

lieves there’s nothing to worry about. She argues that the devices rely on artificial intelligence, which is “still in its infancy” when it comes to translation. Eugenia added: “Google Translate has the level of comprehension of a six-yearold child. I don’t see these devices interpreting for businesses, for the same reason that we don’t send text translated by Google Translate without revising it first.” Her main concern is privacy. She questions the degree to which translated recordings belong to devicemakers, and whether those firms are free to do what they like with them. “We have signed confidentiality agreements, and, at this point, I don’t think these devices will affect our work,” she said. Yet Eugenia recognises that the work of interpreters is likely to change, just as it did with translators, who spend an increasing chunk of time editing rather than translating. Computer engineer Juan Salvador Castejón believes the best option for people in these industries is to build instanttranslation devices. “The only survivors will be those people who provide extra value by making decisions, or interpreting something that is not simply a case of mechanical work.”

A killer-lift poser Ambulance blazes are for probing judge treated with suspicion

Tragic mum Rocio Cortes

A JUDGE, who is investigating how a new mother was cut in half by a lift, has asked police why the computer system operating it was erased. In an official letter to the Policía Científica, the judge asked the force to “clarify the reasons for the erasure of the elevator CPU information”. The CPU is the “brain” of any computer… in this case, the one that controls the elevator. On 20th August, Rocio Cortes was being transferred from the delivery room back to the maternity ward,

after giving birth to her daughter at the Hospital de Valme de Sevilla. But, as she was halfway out of the lift, the doors closed quickly and the lift moved upwards, virtually cutting the tragic woman in half, and killing her. But the computer operating system, which would have helped explain why the accident occurred, has since been erased. Although it can happen when the power supply is disconnected, or there is a battery issue, an investigation has revealed that neither of these malfunctions could have caused the lift doors to close in this way.

FOUR abandoned vehicles, comprising three ambulances and a van, were set alight in Gran Canaria on Monday in a Las Palmas car park, with the huge flames spotted for several kilometres.

Police were alerted by several calls at around 2.30pm, as were the Fire Brigade and Local Police, who sealed off the area, with the public’s safely in mind. But the firefighters’ efforts in extinguishing the blaze led to a great plume of smoke, followed by a nasty smell, which lingered over the Gran Canaria capital, and also headed towards the south of the island. National Police believe the fire could have been the work of arsonists, but the company responsible for the ambulances insisted the vehicles were not abandoned but parked-up, because of a court order. Police have not ruled out a connection with the eight ambulances, used for transferring patients, which

were torched the previous Saturday in Telde, also on Gran Canaria. It could cost ambulance company Aromedica some 320,000 euros, because each vehicle was insured for around 40,000 euros. The police are still questioning residents and local shop-owners in the area in case they might have noticed anyone behaving

suspiciously. The burned-out vehicles still remain in the sealedoff area, pending further investigations, although there is a strong belief that the incident was an act of vandalism. Should this be the case, the ambulance company will not be covered by insurance, and will not receive any payout.

Club-scene ‘Godfather’ faces life-time sentence

Rallying outside the courtroom, and, inset, Cursach and Carbonell

THERE was chaos outside Palma’s criminal court, as jailed nightclub tycoon Tolo Cursach appeared on bribery and corruption charges.

Hundreds of protesters gathered outside the courtroom to voice their support for the businessman, known as “The Godfather” of Palma’s club scene. They were armed with horns and whistles as they chanted “Freedom”, and “We want the truth”. Leading judge Manuel Penalva entered the courtroom through the back door, arriving

inside a camouflaged police car. The majority of protesters were friends and family of the dozens of suspects, embroiled in the Cursach case. Police officers, politicians, and Cursach employees are all facing bribery, corruption, and extortion charges. Some of them have accused the authorities of trying to cover up their own crimes by stitching-up businessman Cursach, who faces 80 years behind bars on a range of charges, which also include murder and drug-trafficking. Cursach denied all charges in court, saying he knew nothing

about alleged drugfuelled orgies, involving senior politicians, taking place in his private nightclub. Cursach also denied communicating with Pilar Carbonell, the former Balearic Tourism Councillor, who was forced to resign over allegations that she favoured his company in public contracts. Meanwhile, doubt has been cast on the story of a key witness, a former brothel madam, who claimed that Cursach minions offered her a luxury flat in Paris in exchange for her silence. But further investigation uncovered a tangle of lies she had told police previously.

Farage lights up EU pension row NIGEL Farage, the controversial, former UKIP party leader, has been ridiculed for telling the BBC he will accept his bumper EU pension. “Of course I’ll take it,” he said on Andrew Marr’s Sunday show. “I have said that from day one. Why should my family and others suffer even more?” As an MEP, the 53-year-old is entitled to a taxpayer-funded pension of £73,000 when he reaches 63. But Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesman Tom Brake said his attitude was unbelievable, describing him as a shameless hypocrite.

He added: “He rails against the so-called EU gravy train, but is happy to cash in when it suits him. “No doubt, he also, secretly, backs the £50 billion Brexit divorce bill, that includes money to pay for his EU pension.” Farage, who has never won a seat in Britain’s parliament,

campaigned long and loud for Brexit, yet he appeared stunned when his anti-EU campaign actually succeeded. Since then, though, he has stepped down from the UK leadership, and, indeed, the party itself, preferring to comment on events as an individual, as they materialise.

Pound climbs

as Brexit progress made

By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks.

Despite experiencing both peaks and troughs, the pound has been able to record gains, overall, versus the Euro and US dollar, over the past fortnight. GBP/ EUR hit a low of 1.1138 euros last week, but is now trending at a high of around 1.1417. Meanwhile, GBP/USD exchange rates have risen from lows of US$1.3516, to highs of US$1.3548, just before the weekend. EUR/ GBP has fallen to a 20week low of 0.8758 euros over the course of the last fortnight, while EUR/USD

has been able to make, and largely hold, some modest gains, and currently trends around US$1.1841. Pound advances were hampered in midNovember by a series of gloomy, economic developments. Chancellor Philip Hammond delivered an uneventful budget on the 22nd, but the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) followed up by publishing some dire figures for productivity and wage growth. Data later in the week showed that consumer confidence had plunged back to the low, last seen immediately after the referendum. However, Sterling was able to recover at the end of the week, after Bank of England (BoE) member Silvana Tenreyro warned that markets had not considered the possibility Brexit may push interest rates higher, rather than lower. Things continued to improve last week, after it emerged that the UK

government was likely to up the amount it was willing to pay for a Brexit divorce bill to around 50 billion euros. Fears over the Irish border remained, however, but these have evaporated today after the UK government agreed to the EU’s terms for keeping the whole of Ireland under single-market regulations, to prevent the need for a hard customs border between Northern Ireland and Ireland. Meanwhile, the euro has been hampered by some disappointing data figures, with Germany’s consumer confidence and inflation data softening the outlook for the Eurozone’s powerhouse economy. EUR was dealt a significant blow on Friday, when a study found that the euro had failed to deliver the benefits to the economies that had joined it, such as narrowing the extent to which their prosperity diverged. Although the US dollar muddled along over the past two weeks, on the

back of sky-high, interestrate-hike bets, there were several, turbulent moments. GDP data, last Wednesday, showed a better-thanexpected rate of growth, while, today, the US dollar is on strong form, after the weekend saw the Senate finally approving a bill for tax reform. Tuesday’s UK services PMI are a big release, given that it chronicles activity in the sector responsible for over 75% of economic growth. After that, markets will have to wait until Friday for the next, notable, UK releases, with a slew of industrial, manufacturing and construction data, accompanied by trade figures, and followed by a GDP estimate. The middle of next week is likely to see severe turbulence on the markets, thanks to the clustering of interest-rate meetings, and decisions from central banks. The US Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) announces its latest decisions on monetary

policy on Wednesday 13th, with the Bank of England (BoE) and European Central Bank (ECB) both publishing their latest policy conclusions on Thursday 14th. GBP/EUR and GBP/ USD will therefore be under notable pressure throughout the week, and that’s without even taking into consideration the likelihood of more news from the Brexit talks and US tax reform. Arrest warrants dropped against Puigdemont Five SPANISH Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena ordered the withdrawal on Tuesday of a European Arrest Warrant against former Catalan First Minister Carles Puigdemont. Four other ex-regional ministers, Clara Ponsatí (education), Toni Comín (health), Lluís Puig (culture) and Meritxell Serret (agriculture), who fled with him to Belgium, also had their Arrest Warrants withdrawn. The Judge also ordered the international version of the Arrest Warrant to be withdrawn, and Llarena believes that if these Arrest Warrants were carried out, Puigdemont and the other four might only be investigated and tried for some of the crimes they stand accused of: rebellion, sedition and

misuse of public funds, if a Belgian judge refused to accept them all. The judge writes that the five “seem to have demonstrated their intent to return to Spain” to take part in the elections, and assume their offices if elected. Such a “substantial” restriction from a Belgian court, Llarena writes, would make it more difficult to investigate fairly the whole group for the full range of crimes. That is why the Supreme Court decided last month to take complete charge

of what was previously an investigation, split between the Supreme Court and the National High Court in Madrid. Both judges, independently, saw grounds to investigate the actions of the group, as a whole, for their roles in events during the two years leading up to the declaration of Catalan independence on 27th October. Judge Llarena believes “the different criminal responsibilities must be treated in a unified manner”. If not, the process may

lead to “contradictory and divergent outcomes for the different members” of the group, which includes Puigdemont and the whole of his former regional government, several former members of the Catalan Parliament, including the Speaker, Carme Forcadell, former Catalan Police chief Josep Lluis Trapero and the chairmen of the Catalan National Assembly (ANC) and Omnium Cultural, Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cuixart respectively. Sánchez and Cuixart are accused of sedition (riot)

for the events of 20th September in Barcelona. Jordi Sánchez announced his resignation as the chairman of the ANC on 16th November, to run as a candidate alongside Puigdemont in the regional election on 21st December. On Monday, Llarena also ordered the release, on a 100,000-euro bail each, of six other former regional ministers: Jordi Turull (spokesman), Josep Rull (territory), Raul Romeva (foreign affairs), Dolors Bassa (work and social affairs), Meritxell Borrás (public administration) and Carles Mundó (justice), who were jailed on remand on 2nd November. Four others accused in the case, Oriol Junqueras (former Deputy First Minister, economy), Joaquín Forn (interior), Jordi Sánchez (ANC) and Jordi Cuixart (Omnium Cultural) were denied bail and remain in prison on remand (pre-trial custody).

Attenborough And The Giant Elephant Sunday 10 December, BBC1, 21.00

David Attenborough investigates the remarkable life and death of Jumbo the elephant - a celebrity animal superstar whose story is said to have inspired the movie Dumbo. Attenborough joins a team of scientists and conservationists to unravel the complex and mysterious story of this large African elephant - an elephant many believed to be the biggest in the world. With unique access to Jumbo’s skeleton at the American Museum of Natural History, the team work together to separate myth from reality. How big was Jumbo really? How was he treated in captivity? And how did he die? Jumbo’s bones may offer vital clues. Arriving in London Zoo in 1865, Jumbo fast became a firm favourite of Queen Victoria and her children, and was nicknamed the Children’s Pet. Yet behind the scenes, this gentle giant was living a double life - smashing his den, breaking his tusks and being pacified by large amounts of alcohol given to him by his keeper Matthew Scott, who had a deep empathy for animals, developing a particularly strong and near mystical bond with Jumbo. Then, quite suddenly, London Zoo caused public outrage by selling Jumbo to PT Barnum’s circus in America where he travelled with his devoted keeper to start a new life. But while his time in America turned him into star with 20 million people coming to see him, his life ended tragically and mysteriously. As well as Jumbo’s skeleton, Attenborough explores the lives of wild elephants to explain Jumbo’s troubled mind, and he discovers how our attitude to captive elephants has changed dramatically in recent years.

week’s TV Choice John Noakes: TV Hero

Saturday 9 December, BBC2, 17.30 This special documentary pays tribute to one of Britain’s true TV icons, by the people who knew him best. Celebrating some of John Noakes’ finest moments, the film is an appreciation of the extraordinary master of derring-do, featuring often astonishing - and equally often hilarious - archive, both classic and less well-known. A health and safety officer’s nightmare, John Noakes famously climbed Nelson’s Column without a harness. He also scaled the hideously high mast of the HMS Ganges, achieved a five mile free-fall (earning himself a place in the Guinness World Record Books) and concussed himself on the Cresta Run, after which he revealed his bruises to the viewers… while wearing his wife Vicky’s knickers he had accidentally put on that morning in the dark! The programme hears from his colleagues and co-workers, both behind and in front of camera, about what a wonderful companion he was in the studio too, making live television feel really live because he clearly loved it as much when things went wrong as when they worked. His was a can-do quality, a have-a-go enthusiasm that endeared him to the nation. It made him a hero for viewers young and old - and set the bar for all TV presenters who followed him. Noakes was also an actor and a showman who hid his true personality behind this Blue Peter persona. His madcap escapades were the adventures of his clowning invention - but he considered himself an ordinary bloke in the street.

Blue Planet II

White Right: Meeting The Enemy - Exposure Monday 11th December, ITV1, 22.40

Sunday 10th December, BBC1, 20.00 Blue Planet II explored parts of the ocean that nobody has ever visited, encountered extraordinary animals, and discovered new insights into life beneath the waves. In Our Blue Planet, Sir David Attenborough examines the impact of human life on life in the ocean. With evidence of albatross parents unwittingly feed their chicks plastic, mother dolphins potentially exposing their new-born calves to pollutants through their contaminated milk, and even man-made noise drowning out the natural sounds animals use to communicate, many creatures are struggling to survive. Despite these devastating impacts, this film contains an inspiring message of hope. Fifty years ago Norwegian spring-spawning herring were almost wiped out. Today, the recovered herring stocks offer one of the greatest spectacles in the ocean, as hundreds of humpback whales and orca gather for the feast. In the Galapagos one scientist has devoted much of his life to saving the largest fish in the sea - the whale shark. In the Caribbean, a community is working to save giant leatherback turtles by protecting the eggs and animals they once took as food. But some changes in the ocean will require a global effort: warming seas threaten vast coral reefs, and predicted rising sea levels could impact the lives of hundreds of millions of people around the world.

In this authored documentary for ITV’s Exposure current affairs strand, Emmy Award-winning film-maker Deeyah Khan meets US neo-Nazis and white nationalists face to face and attends America’s biggest and most violent far right rally in recent years. Khan, who has received death threats in the past after advocating diversity and multiculturalism, tries to get behind the violent ideology, to seek to understand the personal and political reasons behind the apparent resurgence of far right extremism in the US.

Thirty year-old Dubliner Kerie, pictured, has been blind all her life. Two years ago, after struggling to find work in Ireland, she took the brave step of leaving her family home and moving to the UK on her own. After tirelessly searching for work, Kerie has been unemployed for the past year. If she doesn’t find a job soon, she faces the very real possibility of having to return home. Former rugby player and double amputee Daniel was just 22 years old when - following an accident - he woke up from a coma in hospital he found out that he had lost both his legs. In the five years since the accident Daniel has sent out more than 800 job applications, with little success. Will he be able to convince potential employers to see past his wheelchair? Psychologist Nancy Doyle helps Kerie to discover her untapped abilities and gives Daniel the help and advice he needs to believe in himself and his talent.

Panorama: The Operation that Ruined My Life BBC1, 19:30

Women across the UK are suffering after an operation they were told would transform their lives. Instead, some of them say their lives have been ruined. For years women have been fitted with mesh-like devices to treat prolapse or incontinence - often caused by childbirth. Although it’s been a successful treatment for many of them, thousands of women in the US, the UK and Australia are now suing, after finding themselves in agony or suffering other serious complications. Reporter Lucy Adams meets women living with constant pain. She investigates how and why these devices were approved for use in the first place and asks whether manufacturers and regulators should have acted sooner to take some of them off the market.

Rick Stein journeys from northern California to Mexico, enjoying unique dishes and the enduring legacy of Mexico. In this episode, Rick heads to the Mexican capital - a melting pot that encapsulates a country that, despite its narrow stature, crosses three time zones. For that simple reason, locals casually refer to the city as ‘Mexico’, and not much has changed to the food that fed the Aztecs. Scenes captured by Diego Rivera in his murals come alive in the city’s markets, while working men’s taverns still offer pulque, the alcopop of the ancients. Heading south from the capital, Rick travels to the city of Puebla, which conjures up images of the Spanish conquest of Mexico. It is a city with impressive European architecture, talavera pottery and the home of mole, Mexico’s famous meat stew. Finally, Rick travels to the deserts of Oaxaca, where mezcal, one of the country’s most iconic drinks, is produced.

A look back at candidates from this year’s series of The Apprentice who fell before the final hurdle. They redesigned fivestar hotel rooms in a shade of trifle, sang at a Wembley FA Cup final, programmed robots to ‘downward dog’ and trained dogs to do a hoedown. With the help of some previously unseen boardroom insights, Lord Sugar leads viewers through the best and worst decisions made by the candidates. He looks back on the bust-ups in the boardroom and explains how he came to decide who should be fired.

Tenerife Entertainment Awards’ Carnival Queen 2017

Leah's crowning glory

THE 11th annual TEAs (Tenerife Entertainment Awards) 2017, sponsored by Sebastian and St James, took place on Sunday, 15th October at Castillo San Miguel, with this year's theme being Carnival. For any Carnival, you need a queen, and, after weeks of voting by the public, Leah Burt was crowned TEAs' Carnival Queen. As part of her prize, she not only become the face of sponsors Sebastian and St James, but was also awarded a photo shoot, carried out a few weeks ago. In addition, Leah will receive a portfolio, and will take part in a Fashion Show. The photo shoot was organised, jointly, by the sponsors of the TEAs' Carnival Queen, EMA Etiquette & Modelling Academy & Celebrity International, Cinderella's Boutique, and Mark Thornton Photography. Two locations were chosen: the Tigresa 5* Exclusive Yacht, and the newly-opened Lagarto Restaurant. On location, there was also Hair & Dresser Zoe Armstrong; Make-up, Olivia Ashley (Shoot on Tigresa), and Kelly Tilbury, Make-up (at Lagarto). The photo shoot followed weeks of planning by Denise Bell, from EMA Etiquette & Modelling Academy, while Leah's journey started days before, with visits to Cinderella's Boutique to collect her dresses, etc. Under the guidance of Cinderella's owner Anne Marie Nolan, and with Denise, outfits for each location were chosen, along with Leah gaining some valuable modelling experience and catwalk training - with much more to come. Her big day arrived, and, with an early start, it was off to the first location, the Tigresa 5* Exclusive Yacht. Director Mariano and Captain Jose

greeted the team with champagne, of course, to start the day off, and away they sailed. Denise, keeping a tight ship, was there, instructing Leah regarding dress position and poses, in addition to teaching her some tricks of the trade. Zoe was on hand for Leah’s hair, giving her various looks throughout the day, and Olivia attended to make-up, keeping Leah looking at her best. Mark Thornton was behind the camera, directing and producing the outstanding photos, some which you can see here, and others online, very soon. The next location was the newly-opened Lagarto Restaurant, by Venture Restaurants, in La Caleta, and Denise was again in full control of the shoot. She liaised with the restaurant's management and staff to capture the beauty of Leah, as well as the surroundings, along with the stunning food and cocktails, all with the help of Zoe and Kelly. Leah, bubbling with joy, certainly enjoyed every moment, displaying her natural beauty, and looking stunning in all the outfits chosen for her. At that point, Leah was working with ease, playing to the camera and learning, quickly, that modelling was not always fun and pretty… but pretty hard work! Denise told her, jokingly: “You will feel very tired tomorrow, I promise you.”

Denise said the whole team were amazing, and everyone worked with such a passion to deliver the best results, adding: “I was delighted and very proud to see the results.” Information about the sponsors and people involved in the day EMA Etiquette & Modelling Academy: For both boys and girls, to young ladies and young gentlemen, etiquette is not something you are born with, but everyone can have good manners… it’s just a matter of learning the rules. Hair dressed to impress? hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot

YOU’VE got the dress? You’ve bought new shoes? Then you’re all set for the night of the year - your festive party. But what about your hair? You’re not going to pull off that new outfit if your hair’s not done, are you? So, if you’re thinking of doing something

special, you should have already booked into your favourite salon. Give your stylist plenty of notice regarding what you are wanting them to create. Take along

an image, or have it ready on your phone, to give your stylist an idea of what you’d like. It’s also a good idea to show them a photo of your dress, to match up your total look. This will ensure you get it right, from top to toe. I specialise in party/wedding hair, so hair-ups are part of my everyday work. Check with your stylist to ensure they can do what you require, before turning up at the salon. If your hair’s not properly dressed, then you’re not, either. Make the effort, and dress to impress.

Shine on, party people By Carl pattison

IT doesn’t matter whether your Christmas party is something discreet, or an all-out, major function; getting your outfit just right is the key. Start by thinking about where you’re going, and what sort of impression you want to create. Do you want to be classy and chic, or do you want to be the star of the show? This party season sees not only dresses but trouser suits making an impression, especially in silks and metallics.

Of course, anything that shines is hot this season, but try to put a different edge on it by adding your bling into your accessories. Hot colours are greens, blues and metallic silvers, and primary colours will bring alive a darker outfit. Don’t go full-on with the bling if you’re trying to look chic; keep it simple and effective, because overdoing it will cheapen the outfit. One last thing to remember is that if you’re picking a highstreet item, add your own touch to it. You don’t want to turn up in exactly the same outfit as someone else. Put time and effort into putting together your look, and this

will make sure the compliments flow in your direction.

Interior trends 2018

By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic

AT the end of each year, new interior trends get published, for the world to see what’s in and what’s out. Here is what’s hot for 2018. When it comes to colour trends, there are plenty to choose from. The colours playing a big part are the more earthy and warm shades; these are replacing the fifty shades of grey, as I call them, from 2017. So, to be more specific, intense emerald, ruby reds, and even the deep browns have made a come-back. However, if you have the scandi look, pastel colours have been mentioned a lot, and look great alongside each other. Also, bright yellow is one to

look out for, if you want something bold and a bit more “out there”. Apart from colours, wallpaper is making a huge comeback. Geometric patterns are the favourite; avoid floral patterns for the walls, but oversized flowers for décor are most definitely in. Velvet and suede upholstery fabrics are everywhere I look, and can make a beautiful transformation to a bedroom, using them for matching headboard and curtains. As for materials such as wood, metallics and marble, mix them up and combine them how you like. For both kitchen and bathroom, marble is still a strong leader, as it was in 2017. It is, pretty much, a timeless classic (in my eyes, anyway), and something you definitely can’t go wrong with. Tiles are stirring away slowly from the subway and smaller tiles alike, and going for larger slablike pieces.

In kitchens, it’s gone black mad! Black is the new white in the kitchens of 2018, whether it be jet black, high gloss for the modern kitchen, or updating wooden cupboard doors, giving the kitchen a dramatic makeover. When it comes to trends, it is important not to take them too seriously; changing your kitchen or replacing the sofa isn’t something that can be done every year. Those big decisions need to be made with something you’re going to love for years. It is fun to look and take from it what you like, and just accessorise with a few trendy pieces you fall for. If you need any advice in decorating your home, in Muebles Chic we have a huge range of items in stock, and we also offer madeto-measure options. Drivers' licences By Emma

from Motorworld

AS Christmas approaches, we thought it might be useful for readers to refresh their memories regarding traffic infringements, and how they affect their licence and points situation. Firstly, what information is shown on a Spanish licence? Well, basically all European Licences are the same, but with a flag denoting the country of origin (UK, Spain, Italy etc.). Each section has a number that describes the item shown: 1. Surname 2. Given names 3. Date of birth and country of birth 4. A) Date of issue of the licence B) Date of expiry of the licence C) Issued by 5. Driver’s licence number 6. Photo of the holder 7. Holder’s signature 8. Categories held 9. Valid from 10. Valid to 11. Drivers' codes

What are the most common types of codes? 1.1 Glasses 1.2 Lenses or contact lenses 01.06 Glasses or contact lenses 02.01 Hearing aid 02.02 Hearing aid in both ears 05.01 Limited to daylight driving (from one hour after sunrise, to one hour before sunset) 05.02 Limited to a kilometre radius from residency, or from a city centre 05.03 Cannot carry passengers 05.04 Speed limited to x km/h 05.08 No alcohol permitted 10.01 Manual transmission only 10.02 Automatic transmission only 15.01 Adapted clutch pedal 20.01 Adapted brake pedal 25.01 Adapted accelerator pedal 42.01 Exterior lateral mirror 42.04 Panoramic interior mirror 70 exchanged licence, followed by a previous licence number. Now here's the important part, folks! How many points are given on a licence? When the points system was introduced, and for each exchanged licence, the holder starts with 12 points. Are any more points achievable? Well, the short answer is: yes! Two extra points are given if the holder

Tasty wine, but price will go up

LOVERS of wines made in Spain will be marking 2017 down as a vintage year, for various reasons, say experts. That’s because stocks will arrive two to three weeks earlier, and they will be more alcoholic, with a higher quality. However, there are some drawbacks. Soaring temperatures and little rain

throughout the grapegrowing season means there won’t be as much wine available as usual, so there won’t be as much on offer, and that will probably lead to higher prices. “The high temperatures and the drought have caused an accelerated maturation of the fruit,” said Antonio Camacho, President of Corporación Vinoloa. “There has also been a more personalised treatment in each plot to ensure quality.”

has not lost any in the first three years, and then a further one extra point is given after another three years, until a total of 15 points is reached. A new driver, or re-issued licence, is awarded an initial eight points, until the licence has been held for two years. The amount of points you lose for infringements is shown below, but, bear in mind that, in addition to this, there are often fines, too! Christmas is coming, and the police want their parties! Six points: 1. Driving under the influence of alcohol, with a reading higher than 0.50 mg/l in expelled air (in the case of professional drivers and new drivers, 0.30 mg/l) 2. Driving under the influence of drugs 3. Refusal to participate in a drug or alcohol test 4. Dangerous driving, driving in the wrong direction, or

participating in an illegal race 5. Driving a vehicle with a radar detector or inhibitor fitted 6. Driving 50% over the permitted hours, or with under 50% of the obligatory rest 7. Participating or collaborating in altering the correct function of a tachograph or speed limiter Four points: 1. Driving under the influence of alcohol with a reading higher than 0.25 mg/l, but lower than 0.50 mg/l in expelled air (in the case of professional drivers and new drivers, from 0.15 mg/l to 0.30 mg/l) 2. Driving a vehicle without the necessary licence 3. Throwing onto the road objects that could cause a fire, road traffic accidents or an obstacle to the traffic 4. Ignoring a give-way, or the obligation to stop at a giveway, stop sign or red traffic light

5. Overtaking, putting oncoming traffic in danger, or overtaking in a dangerous or low-visibility area 6. Overtaking, endangering cyclists 7. Reversing on motorways or dual carriageways 8. Not respecting a traffic agent's orders, who is regulating the traffic 9. Not maintaining a safety gap between the car in front 10. Driving a vehicle whilst suspended, or prohibited from doing so Three points: 1. Making a change of direction where it isn't allowed 2. Driving whilst using earphones, or any other device that reduces the attention of the driver, using a telephone, satellite navigation system or any other communication system 3. Not using a seat belt or child-restraint system, helmet or other protection devices.

Chinese cause a huge Iberian ham concern

SPAIN is in danger of running short of Iberian ham, which is one of its mostbeloved delicacies, because Chinese consumers have developed a love of it and can’t get enough! Their demand for the product is now threatening to exhaust supplies. And, as the best-quality ham takes a long time to produce, the increase in exports to China has put pressure on producers, and has raised prices by nearly 10%. The priciest ham on the market, jamon iberico de bellota, comes from pigs that graze on acorn-rich pastures for months on end, and is said to be the most indemand in China. But it is also cured for the longest

spell. To try to speed up the process, the Chinese are believed to have started importing legs of frozen ham and curing it themselves. But the end

product is often much saltier. The country has even opened specialised academies to train its own ham-slicers.

CATHOLICS and Anglicans join forces tomorrow (Saturday) for a Gospel Music Concert by the Latonius Gospel Choir, from 6-7pm, at Golf del Sur’s San Blas Church. It will be followed in the next hour by an Ecumenical and International Christmas

Carol Service, in English and Spanish. Next Saturday (16th Dec), at El Medano’s Catholic Parish Church, there will also be a concert, featuring Christmas Italian baroque music by the Tenerife Baroque Orchestra, starting at 8pm. You are all invited to both festive events.

Santa Paws is coming to K9! CHRISTMAS is time for gifts and happiness, and it shouldn’t be any different for the doggies and kitties at the K9 animal refuge. They all deserve the best, so no doggy or kitty will go without a gift this Christmas, and K9 staff and volunteers have designed the refuge's very own Christmas stocking. Everyone is welcome to place their gifts inside the Christmas box, and, if they wish to dedicate the gift to a specific dog or cat, they can simply put a name tag on it. So, if you have some free time, and would like to give our animals a lovely Christmas surprise, just pop up to the refuge any day, between 11am and 2pm, and take part in the Christmas joy!

K9 Christmas party This year’s K9 fundraising Christmas party is on Saturday, 9th December at Showtime, Adeje (exit 78, TF1). Tickets are 25 euros per person, and include a chicken meal or vegetarian option, drinks all evening (excluding spirits and bottled beers), and entertainment from Let It Be Beatles and compere Aidy Evans. Tickets are available from: Lin on 626 344 799; Mikey at k9mikey@gmail.com; Studio 5 hairdressers, Los Cristianos 922 794 304, and K9 refuge 667 638 468. There will be raffles on the night, and please do bring along treats for the K9 wonderdogs and cats. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all

shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-and-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker, K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats.

Busking event Dog of the week - Duna to raise money

Live Arico News

DUNA is a one-year-old, female podenco. The podenco is, traditionally, a hunting dog, but they can, sadly, can have a raw deal in life, because they are quite often seen as commodities; there to do a job, and nothing more. If they do not perform well, they have been known to be thrown onto roads from moving vehicles, or abandoned in the mountains to starve to death. Duna was found with a horrendous leg fracture, which cost us 400 euros to fix. She has recovered, and is on trial adoption, so we have everything crossed. Podencos have bundles of energy, and suit living on fincas, or being able to have long walks. They are also loving dogs, with amazing temperaments. If you think you could have a podenco in your life, call Sue on 629 388102 for more information, as we have other podencos just like Duna. Please consider making a donation, at least, so we can carry on helping dogs like her. We never give up hope. 2018 calendars Once again, we are rather proud of them. Priced at

just five euros, they are on sale now in our charity shops, with 100% of the profits going directly to the doggies, many of whom feature in the calendar. Get yours today; the ideal Christmas gift. Come and walk the doggies! Join the Live Arico dogwalking club on Saturday mornings from 11am. Our dogs absolutely love it, and you will, too. Send a Whatsapp to Eugenio on 633 717480 and he will meet you there. Happy trails! Live Arico shops Come and bag a bargain at any of our three shops: San Eugenio - opposite

Hotel La Nina, at Las Carabelas, near Amanda's Bar. Open every day (104pm), and now Sundays! Los Cristianos - Calle Revron, near Thistle and Dragon Bar and play-park. Open daily (10-4pm) Golf del Sur - Golf Park, just before the lottery kiosk. Open Monday-Friday (106pm), Saturday (10-3pm), Sunday (10.30-3pm) DON’T THROW THINGS AWAY! Call Steve on 634 819410; we can sell them to help the dogs. Join us On Facebook - Live Arico P.A.W.S Tenerife http://twitter.com/live_arico http://www.livearico.com

A GROUP of musicians will gather inside the main entrance of Siam Mall shopping centre, between 2-5pm on Saturday, 16th December, for an impromptu busking session.

Their aim is to raise muchneeded funds for the underprivileged families who use La Buena Estrella soup kitchen, in El Fraile. At this time of year, we all tend to over-indulge, such as eating out, drinking more than normal, and buying more presents than are needed for our loved ones. This year, please spare a thought for those marginalised people on the edge of society, who can barely make ends meet, or, worse still, have to rely

on hand-outs to get by. La Buena Estrella is a notfor-profit organisation, which provides a daily meal service for those in need. It also supplies food parcels to needy families, and assists with paperwork for those not capable of managing their own affairs. They have moved, recently, to larger premises, and, very soon, will be opening a night centre for those who are homeless, and have nothing, or no one, to turn to. If you can sing, dance or clap your hands, why not come down to Siam Mall, and give generously to a very worthwhile cause at this time of year? To find out more about La Buena Estrella, and the work they do, check them out on Facebook at AsociaciĂłn Comedor Social La Buena Estrella.

Five-star goalden girls Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 5 Sporting Club Huelva 1

FIVE classy goals, and a ruthless display, enabled the Tenerife side to celebrate Wednesday’s holiday by climbing to fifth in Spain’s Premier League. There’s no big secret to their dramatic turn-around in form, because they work hard for each other and spread the ball around, as well as producing winning moments from anywhere on the pitch. Persistence also helps, and when Cristina MartinPrieto’s goal-charge was part-saved, she pounced on the loose ball and forced it into the Huelva net, just six minutes into the game. The visitors were playing too many high balls, and, with the San Isidro ground a long way uphill, the pitch was more windswept than usual. Only when Huelva kept the ball down on the pitch did they find some composure. From a corner, Granadilla

keeper Pili punched the ball away, one-handed, and Sandra Costello leapt high to nod it in for an equaliser. But Granadilla regrouped and laid siege to the Huelva goal. Maria Jose rounded the defence and the keeper to pass to Ayano, who couldn’t squeeze her shot in. A minute later, the same player saw a shot cannon off the bar. Just before the half-hour the lead was restored, Sara Tui dispatching the ball from a corner. A wave of white shirts then had a string of near-misses. Martin-Prieto cleared the bar and had a header smothered by the keeper. In between, Tui also forced a save to leave Huelva relieved when the break came. A double swap disrupted the home tempo briefly after the restart, as Koko and Pisco replaced Cindy Garcia and Tui. But it proved to be the calm before another attacking storm. Huelva keeper Serrat rescued her side with an impressive double save,

but Granadilla, building from deep, peppered the goal with shots. For all their domination, the hosts knew they needed another goal to kill off their opponents, yet they nearly let Huelva back in. With the Granadilla players camped in the visitors’ half, a quick break spelt danger. But Pili was quick and decisive, racing out of her goal to intercept the threat in midfield. Back to the onslaught, and Maria Jose Perez hit a wellflighted, curling shot that eluded Serrat for the third goal. And Ana Gonzalez almost performed an actionreplay, this time picking out the other bottom corner of the net. Martin-Prieto closed the show with a lob over Serrat to make it three goals in a five-minute blitz, so the final scoreline didn’t really flatter Granadilla. Just three days beforehand, Granadilla made a banquet of CFF Madrid on away soil, and with their home audience enjoying live

coverage on TV Canaria, a 3-1 win was achieved in some style by the visitors, after they had lost an early lead. Paloma Lazaro set up Ana Gonzalez after eight minutes, and she responded with a strong header that gave the home keeper no chance. It took Madrid until nearly

10 minutes into the second half to reply, Jade levelling the scores to throw down the challenge. Granadilla’s Silvia Doblado responded, just four minutes later, by restoring the advantage, and MartinPrieto put the icing on the cake in the closing minutes with a game-clinching third strike.

Crunch time for Tenerife Almeria 2 CD Tenerife 1

By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review

SEASON of goodwill? That doesn’t mean much to a football coach, especially Pep Marti, who lost his 100th game as CD Tenerife boss. It sharpened the focus on which direction the team are heading, because, though it appeared to be an attacking line-up on paper, there was little life in the players, who showed just brief glimpses of passion. The worrying thing is that the better players seem to have caught the malaise affecting everyone. Longo is top scorer, but he wasted a couple of gilt-edged chances early on. Home keeper Rene did well to go down low and block the Italian’s shot, then punch the loose ball clear. But Tenerife keeper Dani Hernandez couldn’t match that. A high ball came into the box and he flapped at it, budging it only slightly as it fell to Motta, who opened the scoring. Longo had another chance after Brian Martin won the ball in a scramble, but the striker again fired straight

at the keeper. Tenerife struggled to generate any prolonged pressure, and the early promise of Casadesus, another of the new players, has subsided. Coach Marti has been accused of leaving it too late to make changes, but he was quick with a half-time shuffle, bringing on Tayron and Juan Carlos for Brian Martin and Vitolo. But it failed to provide the kick needed by the team. In fact, Almeria increased their advantage as they turned defence into attack. Pozo broke on the right and Juan Munoz raced up to support him. Tenerife’s defence opened up and the home players had plenty of time, as Pozo crossed to Munoz for an easy goal. It spurred another attacking substitute, Malbasic for full-back Camara. Yet Carlos must be wondering what he has to do to

be in the starting XI, even though he repeated his super-sub role. His first fierce shot at the

keeper was smothered well, but he showed the determination missing in some team-mates by fir-

ing in a truer effort, which left the keeper clawing at air as the ball whizzed into his net. However, it was too little, too late, and the defeat leaves Tenerife down in 12th position in the league, and a long way off the promotion campaign the fans expected. The CDT President has re-stated his backing for the coach, and the players are all saying the right things. But they really do need to put their words into action. The next three games, before the festive break, will be vital, starting with Reus at home on Sunday, kick-off 7 pm.

Copa del Rey

Ref pulls plug on dream COMEDY calls to outsiders, or horror happenings to the loyal fans… either way, Espanyol’s first and last goals will haunt Tenerife coach Pep Marti, if not the players, as his doubters grow in numbers. The 0-0 leg in Santa Cruz set the stage nicely, but the cast list was not as wellbalanced. Camille returned to the left-back slot, but having Inaki playing just in front of him sent out another negative vibe. Brian Acosta is Tenerife’s

Espanyol 3 CD Tenerife 2 impact player, and his 10th-minute strike was a cracker. Tayron won the ball, picked him out in free space, and watched as Acosta’s boot launched it into the top of the home net. But a cruel twist was coming, after 34 minutes. Alvaro tried a shot that struck Jorge on the upper arm, well outside the penalty area. But, incredibly, the ref awarded a spot-kick that Gerard just managed to get past the diving Carlos Abad. I could cheerfully stand on a tin roof in a thunderstorm

and say “strike me down”, if that were a genuine penalty”! Gerard then had two legitimate shots, which were dealt with by Abad before the break. All was still hopeful because the away-goal rule would have given Tenerife an aggregate victory. Acosta shaped up well for a pop at goal, but the effort was weak, and Gerard saw his closerange effort go out, off the post. Espanyol then showed some class to take the lead after 56 minutes. Melendo made a nice tuck-back and

Granero blasted the ball into the Tenerife net. Several Tenerife breaks went nowhere as they passed back, looking for another route, only to lose possession of the ball. Tayron launched a hopeful punt into the box, but no head was applied. Brian Martin replaced Alberto, Aitor Sanz came on for Camille, and a good move saw Martin link with Acosta before Inaki found the post. Home sub Navarro could have sealed the tie, but his shot went into the sidenetting as team-mates lurked in acres of space.

Time was running out, and Tenerife, 2-1 down, pushed up. Inaki was in a good position to sling in a cross, but he was caught daydreaming, and a lazy, shortpass forward was picked up easily by Navarro. He ran to the other end, outpacing the backtracking Inaki, and a pass for Garcia allowed him to pick his spot for a giftwrapped goal. Tenerife sub Juan Carlos did rifle an injury-time shot into the roof of the home net, but Espanyol’s third goal had already sealed their fate. A 2-2 draw would have put Tenerife through to the next round, but it was not to be.

A Waterfall of tears! TWO results went according to form last Friday, when a 180 for Boothen’s Steve helped them inflict an 8-0 defeat at the Waterfall, while Gaffers sent Picasso’s packing by the same score. Palms Pool Bar were the visitors at the Pub, and so many legs could have gone either way. But superior finishing by the home team gave them a 7-1 victory. Sundowners went to Emerald Lounge, and, in a close match, lost 5-3. Spear Chuckers were at Loch-In A, and, after an evening of superb darts, it came down to the trebles, in which the home team’s Wayne, Paul and Dave threw better arrows, to earn a respectable 5-3 win. The battle at the top of Division 2 is still neck and neck, Legends travelling to Marilyns A

and producing brilliant darts for a 6-2 triumph. Sandy’s, not to be outdone, took all eight points in their fine win at Ourplace Breakaways. Although Nauta Nomads lost 6-2 at The Red Devils, it was reported that Mr Kipling would have been proud of the Belgian cakes supplied! Clouseau’s again travelled with only four players, but they did well to take the trebles and a 4-4 draw at Buzzing B’s. Jamie was, again, the star for Lady Macs, who won 6-2 against visiting Loch-In B. However, mention must be given to Ami and Carla, whose throwing was exceptional throughout the night. The battle of the Nauta teams was closely fought all the way, with Joyce giving her all,

Early-birds catch big worm

Lanzarote 1 CD Marino 2

WAS your Sunday morning sleep-in pleasant? No such thing for CD Marino, who had to be at Tenerife North airport at 7am for their game at Lanzarote, such is the devotion of Tercera Division players. But it was well worth the effort as they rose and shone with an excellent victory against a strong home side. Lanzarote scored through Ayoze Perez after 33 minutes, but Marino, with a

division 2 ResultS

few tactical changes to the team, came back strongly with a Kevin Castro strike after 53 minutes. There was no stopping them after that, and, within 10 minutes, Zeben had silenced home fans by hitting the eventual winner, to confirm 12th spot for the blues. There is no game for CD Marino this weekend, so they can enjoy a wellearned, relaxing Sunday morning.

New broom’s clean sweep TWO home games, two wins… it couldn’t have gone better for new Iberostar Tenerife coach Fotios Kaksikaris, and the fans welcomed him as a Greek bearing gifts. His first game was the biggest test. Real Betis were the Saturday visitors in Endesa League action, and it was the poor run of domestic results that prompted the sacking of former coach Nenad Markovic. A good, all-round display put Tenerife back on track with a 87-70 result, which lifted them to eighth position. But they want to be pushing for top spot, so they need to build on that. The quarter scores were 2619, 20-16, 24-19, and a much closer 17-16 final section, as the coach took a chance to look at the depth of his squad. Polish star Mateusz Ponitka, who led the way on 19 points, was well-supported throughout. Tenerife’s European Champions League qualification was already bubbling along nicely, but an extra nudge in the right direction was most welcome.

And they rose to the top of their group with a 90-67 win over Lithuania’s Neptunas Klaipeda on Tuesday evening in La Laguna. The second quarter showed Tenerife at their best as they dominated it 30-16, wiping out the first quarter’s 18-22 reversal. Wrapping up the game, It proved to be a good night’s work as they wrapped it up 19-18 and 23-11. Abromaitis top-scored with 18 points, and Ponitka carried on his hot form with 13.

Now the coach has settled in, he is working on teamstrengthening. Out will go Bosnian Adin Vrabac, a signing by the previous coach, and new addition Kostas Vasiletadis arrived on Wednesday. The 33-year-old, originally from Salonica, is well-known to his fellow Greek, new boss Fotios. Most of the newcomer’s experience has come in Spain, with Malaga, and Bilbao, so there will be no language barrier.

Women’s Volleyball

Thriller goes all the way SOMETIMES you just have to grind a result out, and that’s just what Arona Tenerife Sur did to overcome stubborn visitors CV San Cougat on Saturday in Los Cristianos. It took five sets to separate the teams, before the home side wrapped up another victory in the fifth-set tiebreak for a 3-2 success. It was plain sailing at first for Arona, who won the opening two sets 25-12, and 25-23. But the Barcelona

side dug in to level with 26-24 and 25-23 set wins to provide a grandstand finish. And, thanks to top-form Ivana Popovic, Arona clinched the final set 15-9 to consolidate their sixth place in the Superliga. Their players are also rising up the scoring charts rapidly, with Diaz Oriana sitting 10th. Tomorrow (Saturday), the ladies are on their travels again, visiting VP Madrid for a 7.30pm clash.
