Legal traders feeling the pinch
Continued from Front The main complaints concern the commercial areas of Las Americas and Los Cristianos, where legitimate shopkeepers are aware that they are starting to lose custom. That’s because tourists are fed up with being harassed by these vendors, so they tend to avoid these areas. Another growing concern is the image portrayed by these people, who are happy to pester anyone walking
by. People feel as though they are being bullied into buying something they really didn’t want in the first place. Prakash Udhwani, entrepreneur and Vice-President of the local Hindu Association, cannot understand why these mavericks are allowed to get away with it. He believes that the large volume of streetvendors affects local companies, which have high overheads to pay,
along with regular taxes. Now, however, local shopkeepers are fighting back. They have made an official complaint to Arona Council, because these illegal vendors are making significant profits, especially since they have no overheads, and do not make any legal contributions. The legitimate traders are demanding some sort of regulation, insisting that vendors sell their wares on market spaces, which are
Drug-dealers pinched, with foreign currency
NATIONAL Police, who arrested two youngsters for drugdealing, separately, in Los Cristianos and Las Americas, discovered foreign currency on them worth hundreds of euros, as well as marijuana and cocaine. They were caught, individually, on the streets, in the early hours of Sunday. Police first pounced in
Las Vistas, at around 1.45am, nabbing a teenager with no documentation but known to police through several previous arrests. He was searched by the officers, who found 101.5gms of hashish and 8.9gms of marijuana, together with some dollars and Lebanese pounds, as well as sterling. And the drugs had all been prepared for streetselling. The second arrest took
place at around 5am in the Starco shopping centre, Las Americas, where they pounced on a 19-year-old youth. As officers and their dogs closed in on him, the teenager tried to get rid of the drugs, to no avail. A search revealed six bags of marijuana and 13 wraps of cocaine, as well as 35 euros. The two men have been detained by the police, awaiting further developments.
prepared, especially, for street-selling. They are also asking Arona Council to introduce legal control by bringing in a local licensing law, so that they are able to sell their goods in specific areas only. And if they do not abide by these laws, the shopkeepers added, then heavy fines should be imposed. The vendors can be extremely persistent and annoying, especially when in a bar or restaurant
terrace, where many people simply want to relax and enjoy themselves without being pestered. The genuine traders’ main complaints are: *Most vendors aren’t legal *They’re not paying tax *There are no official prices *Cheap products are sold for top prices *Drunken tourists are targeted *Vendors make tourist areas less desirable for shoppers

Camp-site boasts a wooden-cabin look
THE camp-site situated at Montaña Roja, alongside the El Medano beach, is having an Open Day tomorrow (Saturday) to show off its new installations. With an investment of over one million euros, Environmental wooden cabins have been built, with respect to the surroundings of Montaña Roja in mind. And, with the first phase almost complete, the camp-site management are eager to show the public. Environmental advisers, along with various councillors from Granadilla’s Tourism and Culture Board, were invited along to see the finished results of Phase 1 on Wednesday. As the camp-site is situated on a naturally-protected area, the cabins had to meet certain requirements, which meant that they were built with wood, and could be run only on clean energy. The intention is that the camp-site keeps its uniqueness. Many people appreciate and respect the area, and they have been visiting this special place for many years.
Black money adds up for second-hand cars COMPLAINTS are growing about the number of secondhand cars for sale, occupying muchneeded parking spaces at the Los Cristianos entrance and exit. Local companies have queried the vehicles, sitting in the busy tourist area, believing that this method of selling, which has spread over the years, has damaged the legal car-sales’ business. Victor Sanchez, President of Las Americas Association of Businesses, believes that “black” money is being moved around, with no tax to pay. He also says that people selling their own vehicles are perfectly entitled to do so, but they should be putting them through second-

hand-car dealerships. Among the main places with an abundance of secondhand vehicles for sale are San Isidro’s main avenue,
San Miguel’s intersection, the Los Cristianos roundabout and Guaza, as well as the Gran Sur area and Adeje.
A PREGNANT woman, expecting twins, went into labour while she was on a flight from Brussels to Gran Canaria. The airport’s medical team there alerted the Canarian Emergency Services, whose medical co-ordinator, step-by-step, gave the necessary instructions to help with the premature labour. An ambulance was dispatched, along with a neonatal team and gynaecologists, who were at the ready and awaiting the plane. Before its arrival, however, a second call was received at the airport, telling medical services that one of the babies had been born and was, apparently,
doing well. With that, a second ambulance was summoned. When the plane finally landed, the medical team assisted the pregnant woman with the birth of her second baby immediately, while baby No.1 was transferred to a nearby hospital. When the ambulance finally arrived at the University Maternity Hospital, the gynaecology and paediatric team were waiting at the doors to continue assisting with the delivery of the second child, who was born some time later. Both mum and babies, who are doing well, will stay in hospital for a few days’ observation.

Spain tops transplant list for three decades SPAIN is again top in the world for numbers of transplants and organ donations, having held the honour for some three decades, says the National Transplant Organisation (ONT).
Its former leader, Dr Rafael Matesanz, who won the prestigious “Universal Spaniard 2017 Award” recently, says this year has seen a record set: from 43.8 donors per million inhabitants in 2016, the figure is now up to 45 per million. And, by the end of December, well over 5,000 transplant operations - the original target for 2020 - will have been performed. Over the last 25 years, more than 100,000 organ transplants have been carried out in Spain, although the figure rises to half-a-million if transplants such as bone marrow, stem cells and skin grafts
are taken into account. This puts Spain at more than double the European Union’s figure, and 13% above that of the US. “Anyone living in Spain, who has needed a transplant to be able to carry on living, has been fortunate enough to be in the place where they have the best opportunities of this happening, and with no discrimination whatsoever, either positive or negative,” stressed Dr Matesanz. As well as internal organ donations, including livedonor kidney and partial liver transplants, Spain has been a pioneer in transplanting limbs - even legs above the knee, and arms above the elbow and was the first country in Europe to carry out a successful face transplant. The “Universal Spaniard Award”, presented annually by the Independent Foundation and, this time, jointly with HM Hospitals, has been won by household names such as author Camilo José Cela, Margarita
Salas, Miguel Induráin, Vicente Ferrer, and world No.1 tennis player Rafa Nadal. Dr Matesanz received the
prize in recognition of his lifetime’s work over the 25-year career of the ONT, which, its leader says, started out as a small
association and is “proof that the tiniest of organisations can grow into something that changes the whole of society.
Bullfighters given okay to kill again
BULLFIGHTERS can kill again on Mallorca, which means the ban on killing bulls in the ring was short-lived. The go-ahead came after the Constitutional Court suspended the Balearic law against the mistreatment of animals, which was approved last July. But now the law, which banned bulls being killed during bullfights, and disallowed minors from fighting, has been found to be “unconstitutional”. The Government’s appeal says the regional law violates certain aspects of state laws on intangible
heritage and bullfighting. They argue that the Balearics do not have the authority for creating laws for specific animal protection. The suspension of the law comes after an appeal was filed in November. Within five months, the courts have to make a decision on the case, either granting the appeal and allowing bulls to be killed in the
ring, or finding the ban constitutional. Other benefits of the law, which are no longer enforced, include health checks on the animals after a fight, time-limits and limitations on numbers of animals involved. The Balearic Government has assured islanders that they will “protect their decision” and will defend the law before the courts.

Birds lifted by sheer kindness
THE wind has been wild lately, but just consider how newlyhatched chicks cope with it. Fortunately, many people have been thinking of the Cory’s Shearwater chicks again this year. The October and November rescue campaign has reported 984 saved and helped on their way, thanks to the good people of Arona and Adeje.
Every year, the Atlanticbased birds lay their eggs on open ground, using cliffs and ravines on islands such as Tenerife,. But the “pardela” chicks are vulnerable to wild animals, and they are also confused by bright lighting on motorways and commercial buildings. Some crash-land on beaches, balconies and walkways, but an annual campaign, coordinated by Rumbo Ziday environmental volunteers, encourages the public to report the discovery of
Shearwater chicks, via the free 112 emergency number. This year 524, were rescued in Arona (down on the previous year’s 621) and 27 died. In Adeje, 460 were rescued with 17 dead. These are the two main areas in which they fall, while other chicks are found along the south-west coast. But all those discovered are helped to relaunch safely, if need be, after treatment at the La Tahonilla recuperation centre, in the North. A big thanks to those who lent a helping hand.

No chance to dress for this dinner date A RESTAURANT for nudes only, O’naturel, has opened in Paris. It’s the third such eaterie in Europe because Tenerife’s Innato, in San Isidro, opened early this year. Owner and restaurateur Tony de Leonardis described Innato as an “orgasmic atmosphere”. And he was inspired by London’s Bunyadi pop-up, which opened to mixed reviews, despite all the hype, in the summer of 2016. Unfortunately, for those who fancy dining in the bare essentials in Tenerife, Innato is now closed. But the O’naturel is, perhaps, the most suitable of the three locations anyway, given France’s openness.
It is the brainchild of businessmen Mike and Stephane Saada, neither of whom are nudists, but the former insurance salesmen saw an opportunity … O’naturel is open for dinner only. Reservations are required, and diners are warned beforehand that
National Police chief shoots himself dead A CHIEF inspector with the National Police has committed suicide at the Corps’ Santa Cruz headquarters, shooting himself in the head with his own service gun.
The death of Miguel Campejo Gallardos has caused great concern among his colleagues, many of whom described him as a highlyprofessional man, of a generous nature and a strong character. In the Canary Islands alone, Campejo had become a much-recognisable figure among the government and local police forces. After serving several years at Las Palmas, he was transferred to Santa Cruz, where he was head of the operations unit for the last five years.
Before his stint in the Canaries, Campejo served many years with the National Police, and, specifically, throughout the late Nineties and early 2000s. He took part in many serious investigations in the Basque country, when ETA terrorism was at its peak in Spain. Campejo’s untimely death means that the National Police Corps (CNP) has now suffered four suicides by officers, three of them in Tenerife.
“orgasmic atmosphere” the restaurant is exactly that: a restaurant, and not somewhere for chancers on the pull. It is billed as an evening locale for the more
free-flowing of people. “People get to be nudists in the summer only,” said Stephane, 42. Unlike the Bunyadi, which is heavily themed, O’naturel’s decor is minimalist. The menu is classically French, with items such as lobster, foie gras, and snails in
parsley-cream sauce. A three-course menu costs 57.50 euros, and a large white curtain over the windows shields guests from perverts, and even curious passers-by! Diners must leave their clothes in a cloakroom, and are provided with slippers. But ladies, who make up 40% of the clientèle, may keep their heels on. Yves Leclerc, President of the French Naturist Federation, is “thrilled” at the idea of being able to strip off for supper. “We’re in the heart of Paris and we’re eating naked - it’s a little surreal,” he told the Daily Mail. “It’s like when we’re on holiday, but it’s even better because, then, I have to put my clothes on to go to a restaurant.” Naked restaurants can also be found in Tokyo, Japan, and Melbourne.
We’ve scented historical find BUILDERS in Valencia were shocked to their bones when they found an ancient skeleton, and what is believed to be a Roman perfume shop and burial site. Workers, who were preparing to install a lift for a new hotel, made a number of unexpected findings instead, which, archaeologists believe, could be significant. The remains of the young gothic woman were found alongside what experts suggest could be a Roman perfume shop, and an ancient Visigoth burial site. The Visigoths were a Germanic off-shoot of the Goths, towards the end of the Roman Empire.
The woman is believed to have been 25 at the time of her death, between 250-750 BC, and her body could be part of a wider grave system near the city’s Plaza de Manises. In a separate discovery, Roman structures and a number of glass bottles suggested to archaeologists that a Roman perfume shop was
also located in a similar area. Further tests are required to confirm the theory, which dates the would-be market at around 300 AD. Head archaeologist Maria Luis Serrano Marcos said: “The point where it is located, next to the forum, in the centre of the Roman city, makes us think it is a perfumery.”

Ryanair are facing further disruption
IRISH airline Ryanair faces a strike by pilots in the runup to Christmas, following its cancellation of 20,000 flights in September after a monumental messup with staff rotas. The strike worry comes after pilots in Italy voted to stay grounded for four hours today (Friday), along with their Portugese colleagues, who voted in favour of industrial action just days earlier. And the chaos may spread further, as pilots in Dublin decide whether to join
the protests. The budget carrier has been criticised regularly by its aircrew about issues which have concerned them in recent months, including the farcical flight cancellations in September. Captain Evan Mullen, President of the Irish Air Line Pilots Association (a registered trade union), said: “The pilot issues, which gave rise to the flight cancellations, have not been adequately addressed. Ryanair pilots who are members of IALPA, are currently considering their options.” But Ryanair’s management brushed off the strike threat, saying that earlier ultimatums had
failed to lead to action. The airline said in a statement: “We regularly receive threats of industrial action from competitor airline pilot unions from Italy and Portugal, and even Aer Lingus pilots, occasionally. Both we and our pilots ignore these letters. Many of Ryanair’s 4,200 pilots work as agency contractors, and an error in the scheduling of shifts led to the raft of cancelled flights. Company boss Michael O’Leary admitted “We made a mess” in the wake of the incident, which affected hundreds of thousands of passengers, and cost the airline millions.
Child left ‘mortified’ over a reindeer head A MOTHER persuaded her local shopping centre to remove a plastic reindeer head from a fund-raising Christmas grotto, because her son was “mortified”.
The Mall, in Maidstone, Kent, apologised and withdrew the decoration from its Christmas grotto, after the child asked his mum if the animal had been killed. Adele Keen forced the removal of the seasonal decoration, mounted on a wall, after complaining on social media. Her shocked son even asked whether Santa “had killed his reindeer”, and, said Adele: “I tried to move on quickly so he was not too scared, and that his Christmas reindeer beliefs weren’t crushed.” Another less-than-im-
pressed shopper tweeted that the display was “inappropriate”. But, despite removing the decoration, the shopping centre said it had been put up to complement the fund-raising grotto’s medieval theme. Marketing manager Suzie Brindle told Sky News: “Each year, the grotto features a different theme, and this time it’s medieval castle, the plastic deer’s head forming part of it.”
She added. “Having heard that the display was causing concern, we took steps to remove the decoration after opening hours, which complies with health and safety regulations. We apologise for any upset caused.” The shopping centre’s annual Christmas grotto had already raised more than £200,000 for various charities, having been open for little more than a week.

Microwave joker is real head-case
A PRANKSTER on YouTube has been criticised for “cementing” his head in a microwave, at a cost of £650 to a fire service for releasing him. Jay Swingler put his head in a plastic bag, inside the microwave, before friends poured seven bags of Polyfilla inside, which trapped him rapidly. After trying, unsuccessfully, to free him for 90 minutes, his pals called an ambulance crew to a Wolverhampton address in Fordhouses. But paramedics were unable to help, so West Midlands Fire Service was contacted, resulting in a rescue operation which tied up five fire-fighters for almost an hour. The rescue crew said Jay’s life was in danger because he could have suffocated. And the 22-year-old tweeted that he was “very lucky to be alive” and had been left “traumatised”. But many of his YouTube fans were unsympathetic, suggesting he should apologise and cover the cost of his rescue. One wrote: “You should count yourself lucky and think twice about whether you’re ever going to put your life at risk again. “What frustrates me the most is that the time paramedics have spent
with you may have affected someone’s else survival.” Another tweeter wrote: “Do the right thing and give West Midlands Fire Service the money.” In a video, Jay said he was “in need, and would have died without the firefighters”. And he admitted: “I should be fined for the stunt, just like the people who get into drunken fights, and I’m more than happy to donate my money to the people who helped me.” West Midlands Fire Service was “seriously unimpressed” with the stunt, and station commander Simon Woodward said: “We pride ourselves on our fiveminute attendance standard. “It means that if we have an incident in which there’s a life at risk, our appliances will be there within five minutes, and that gives us our best chance of saving that life. “But if we’re attending incidents that are YouTube videos, where we have people who’ve been irresponsible, those crews are unable to attend the life-risk incidents.” The Fire Service chief added: “The service charge for that would be £650, but we are not going to charge because his life was in danger. “But what I’d like to do is remind people not to put their lives at risk… for the sake of other people’s entertainment.”

Lost-passport laws are being tightened BRITISH travellers who can’t find their passports at the last minute while abroad, or have had them stolen, could miss their flights home during the testing of a new, emergencyreplacement system. In the past, people could get temporary papers within hours. But, according to reports, they will now have to wait at least two days. That’s because the Foreign Office has introduced a system in which emergency applications are handled by officials in Poland and Spain, instead of individual consulates. The Foreign Office website now says: “Your emergency travel document will normally be ready in two working days.” The pilot scheme is intended to improve security measures, according to an official spokesperson. “It also means that we will be able to make decisions about a person’s eligibility
for an emergency travel document in fewer places, safeguarding a secure UK border,” he said. The data-entry process, and form approvals, will
be carried out centrally in Warsaw and Malaga. But the emergency passports will be printed at individual embassies and consulates. Travellers will be charged
£100 (113 euros) to apply for the travel documents, and they must fill out a form on the UK Government’s website, and attend an appointment at their
nearest embassy or consulate. Proof of travel plans, a passport-quality photo and a police report, if the passport has been stolen, must be provided.
Cheggers dies at 60 KEITH Chegwin, the legendary TV presenter, died at the age of 60 on Monday after a long illness, which left his family “heartbroken” and his admirers devastated. A statement from his family said: “We are heartbroken to share the news that Keith Chegwin sadly passed away, following a long-term battle with a progressive lung condition, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which rapidly worsened towards the end of this year.” “Keith died peacefully at home shortly after midnight on 11th December. His wife Maria, daughter Rose and his son Ted were by his side.” Cheggers was best known, perhaps, for hosting TV pro-
grammes such as children’s game show Cheggers Plays Pop, Swap Shop and Saturday Superstore. The Liverpool-born star began his career as a child actor, starring in films such as Roman Polanski’s Macbeth, and in TV shows, including The Liver Birds, The Adventures of Black Beauty and Z-Cars. He went on to appear in reality TV shows, including
Celebrity Big Brother. Sadly, his last tweet was posted on 28th September, when he wrote: “Still not right. I will be back - but not for a bit yet. I’m so sorry.” Tributes were paid from the world of entertainment for “Cheggers”, whose career spanned five decades. Noel Edmonds, a fellow TV presenter, described him as his “first telly chum”, adding: “I’m certain I’m not alone in shedding tears for a true telly legend. “Cheggers and I launched Swap Shop together. Yes, we had the wonderful broadcaster John Craven to keep us in line, but it was the chemistry between myself and Keith that initially created the Swap Shop magic that
enthralled millions of children every Saturday morning on BBC 1.” Keith’s former wife, Maggie Philbin, said: “Keith was a one-off, full of life and generous, and with a focus on things that mattered his family. “He was loved by everyone who knew and worked with him. I first met him when we did a film about windsurfing, when I joined Swap Shop in 1978, and I was immediately struck by his fun, energy and kindness. “He drove me home to Leicestershire from that freezing lake in Staines, insisting it was on his own way home (he lived in Twickenham).” She added: “He leaves us all with very special memories.”

Baby-milk
warning
A FRENCH company manufacturing baby milk, which is sold in Spain, has ordered a worldwide recall of the product through fears of salmonella. Lactalis, which took over Granada-based group Puleva in 2010, has admitted that, so far, 26 French babies have become sick this month after being fed the powdered milk. A spokesman for the company, one of the world’s largest dairy producers, has told press sources that up to 7,000 tonnes of powder, produced in a single factory in Northern France, may have been contaminated. But Lactalis is unable to determine how much of the milk, marketed under the names of Celi, Milumel and Picot, is still being sold in stores around the world.
A FEMALE British fraudster, said to have conned thousands of euros out of English holidaymakers, is being hunted by Guardia Civil officers. The conwoman, who uses seven identities, is accused of placing dozens of fake holiday-rental adverts on Facebook to hook her victims. Londoner Paula-Louise Neale, an expat and motherof-two, has advertised lettings on the Costa del Sol and Andalucia, taking payments via Paypal for at least two years. The Guardia have confirmed that they are looking for Neale, who has now changed her name by deed poll to Catherine Paula Jameson. And they have built their case around at least eight victims. Holiday-maker Sheeba Gharda said in August that she had lost £750 (800 euros) when she made a payment for a Marbella holiday home ‘el Capricio’. She had booked through ‘Cristina Lori’, a Neale’s alias, but when her group arrived, the rental did not exist and they were forced to fork out a further £600 (640 euros) for another holiday home.

Smart conwoman pinches a fortune from UK tourists
And one victim lost 2,000 euros after Neale asked if she could use his Paypal account to hold some money being sent by a client. David Rowe, 49, who knew her as Paula Ariza, “a stage actress from Chicago”, received phone calls from five prospective holidaymakers, who couldn’t get in contact with ‘Christina Lori’, from whom they had rented a villa. Mr Rowe, who runs his own
consulting group, paid out the money to ensure he “wasn’t going to be brought into a scam”. He has since issued a denuncia for her arrest and is awaiting a court date to give evidence against Neale. Another victim lost 1,000 euros in rent and damages after Neale, allegedly, trashed a three-bedroom terrace house in Ardales, Malaga, in the summer. She was said to have used Airbnb to hire the property,
but, after two months, she no longer paid rent, saying “her husband had just died”, and that she had no money. But before she could be confronted, Neale ransacked the house, stealing bedding, tables and chairs, and it took cleaners three days to make it fit for purpose again. In 2015, brazen-faced Neale even appeared on an online reality show, Mum to Millionaire, boasting of her riches, and saying she had been working as an actor in Bollywood and “hoped to go out to the Far East for work”. Neale, understood to be living in Calahonda, on the Costa del Sol, is actually wanted by the UK tax authorities for unpaid bills. And despite being fully abled, she used her car, modified for her disabled father, to get a 45-euro discount on a recent Fuengirola parking ticket.

Direct Telecom launches Sky Wire in the Canaries DIRECT Telecom has launched Sky Wire throughout the Canary Islands, and so, finally, there is a Broadband solution to replace ADSL and Fibre. It is no secret that getting a reliable Internet connection in the Canaries has not always been a walk-through. For many, it has actually been a nightmare, and, for some, impossible! Most of the problems are related to the dependence on the copper wire, the distance from the exchange - or even the physical condition it is in (affected by ageing, deterioration, humidity, etc). Until now, of course, the only way to get a Broadband connection was to get a physical, copper Land Line installed first, and only then could you apply for an ADSL connection. More recently, with the deployment of the much-anticipated Fibre-Optics cabling, engineers have “unintentionally” destroyed a lot of the copper network, which the National Operator does not really want to maintain any more. And this has simply added more pain for many.
“Fibre Optics” is now the buzz, making all the fuss, and it is no surprise that people are waiting, anxiously, to get their Fibre installed. It should make sense, right? With promised broadband speeds ranging from between 50Mb to 300Mb, surely our Internet problems should disappear… but have they? And do we really need a Fibre connection? Clearly, Fibre technology is technically superior and should provide faster speed. But deployment is slow, and it will be years before the Fibre reaches those areas which have been forgotten for years. Furthermore, Fibre is still a cable and is, in fact, much more delicate. It replaces the Copper cable connected to the same local and regional exchanges, and it can also be damaged during some gardening in the community, or roadworks by the local town hall, which is what happened to the copper. If there are technical issues, these still need to be reported to the same Telefónica engineers, who previously “looked after” the copper. And we all have to
depend and wait on the response times and availability of these engineers. As for the “speed”, studies show that 10Mb is more than enough for most users, looking to browse, stream TV services and use social media. So the 50Mb or 300Mb speeds serve well for marketing, while providers know that these will not be used, or enjoyed, by the vast majority. Having said that, Direct Telecom will also make 50Mb/300Mb Fibre connections available in early 2018, for those who insist. Again, the Fibre connections are based on “contention ratios”, so you could achieve the advertised speeds, as long as no one else in your neighbourhood is using his or her connection at the same time. It means that the more users getting connected to Fibre, the worse
your speed will eventually be, so we cannot help but see a pattern of history repeating itself, albeit with “better technology”. At Direct Telecom, we have accumulated more than 12 years of experience, providing our customers with Internet connections throughout Spain. We have built up a wealth of know-how, dealing with all kinds of providers and engineers, and dealing with a wide range of technical issues. Most importantly, we have figured out what the key problems are, and, finally… how we can by-pass them all! As a result, we have finally deployed the dT Sky Wire network throughout the South of Tenerife, and Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas. An Internet Broadband solution, designed specifically to by-pass dependence on Telefonica/Movistar
and their engineers completely, by using industry-leading equipment, which connects customers directly to our Sky Wire stations, without the need of a copper or Fibre line! We do this by using specialised equipment, which creates an “overthe-air” connection to the Sky Wire station, with almost “laserbeam” precision. Although there are numerous companies offering what appears to be a similar solution, we are, in fact, one of the only companies in Spain using Industry Regulated Official Licensed Frequencies (as opposed to the chaotic, free-usage frequencies used by the others), which brings our service to completely different level. This is, in fact, the only way to offer a top-quality, Broadband solution, which should not be considered “as an alternative” to ADSL or Fibre. It must be considered as a solution, with the potential to replace the more vulnerable ADSL and Fibre connections. The dT Sky Wire Broadband solution is already available, bringing speeds of up to 20Mb to customers throughout the South of Tenerife, and most of Gran Canaria. As there is no need for a physical copper or Fibre cable, the installation can be completed in fewer than five working days, and it will include free access to the popular UKTV service: dT Media TV.
The dT Sky Wire Stations are located strategically, providing extensive coverage from Candelaria, Arico, El Medano, Los Abrigos, Golf del Sur, Amarilla Golf, Las Chafiras, San Miguel, San Isidro, Parque de la Reina, Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio, Guaza, Cabo Blanco, Buzanada, Valle San Lorenzo, Los Cristianos, Las Americas, Torviscas, Fañabe and Costa Adeje, all the way to Playa San Juan, Alcalá, Playa de la Arena, Puerto Santiago and Los Gigantes. Early next year, we shall be activating even more stations to provide even better coverage angles in Los Gigantes, Puerto Santiago, Callao Salvaje, Playa Paraiso, La Caleta and Costa Adeje. The dT Sky Wire package starts from 39.99 euros a month, and Swallows will be delighted to hear that it is possible to hibernate the connection while away, for only 15 euros a month! The installation is performed by our own qualified team of engineers, who, again, make the whole solution independent from Telefónica/Movistar. Although no physical landline is required, we can also offer a Virtual Telephone Line (keep your number or get a new number), which will allow you to connect your telephone to the provided WiFi Router, and make or receive calls with Direct Telecom’s International Low Cost rates. If you wish to break free from the wired grid, and enjoy all the advantages that dT Sky Wire Broadband has to offer, visit www. skywire.es or call us on FREEPHONE 900 347 328.

Stowaway, 12, hidden inside car dashboard
GUARDIA Civil discovered a 12-year old boy, hiding inside the dashboard of a BMW car, at a checkpoint on Spain’s border with Morocco, in the north African enclave of Melilla.
The driver, a Moroccan pensioner, was arrested for trying to smuggle in the youngster, who was curled up inside a tiny space. Border guards detected the boy’s heartbeat, using a special machine designed to screen vehicles for stowaways. The child is believed to be from Guinea, and, when freed from his cramped
hiding space, he was disorientated and suffering breathing difficulties. He also told border medics that his limbs were numb because of the position he had to adopt to fit into the space behind the BMW X5 dashboard. “A tiny detail aroused the suspicion of officers when a heart-beat sensor was passed over the car, a highend vehicle in very good condition,” said a Guardia Civil statement. “The boy was found during an exhaustive search inside the dashboard. An officer felt the body of a person with his hand and immediately ripped off part of the dashboard to remove the youngster.”
Carry on scoffing our doner kebabs
DONER kebabs will not be banned in Europe, despite a move by EU politicians to ban phosphates, which are said to be necessary to keep the seasoned meat ingredient moist. They argued that it had a negative impact on health, and was linked to heart disease. But the plan was voted down narrowly by the EU parliament. The issue arose when the EU’s executive commission proposed to authorise the use of phosphates in lamb, mutton, beef and veal. The Health Committee voted 32-22 to oppose it, following recent studies indicating that the additive put people at a greater risk of heart disease from the fast-food product.
But Baris Donmez, owner of a 24-hour kebab bistro in Berlin’s Mitte district, warned before the vote: “They are looking for ways to hurt Turkish businesses here. Such a ban would be the biggest pile of garbage imaginable.” Kenan Koyuncu, from the German Association of Doner Kebab Producers, told Germany’s Bild daily newspaper: “If the European Parliament gets its way, this would be the death sentence for the entire doner-kebab industry in the European Union.” Fortunately, for donerkebab lovers, there were just enough of them in the EU Parliament to quash the proposal.
Hamster fib put Max in spotlight MAX CLIFFORD, the disgraced PR wizard, who strengthened his international celebrity status following The Sun’s infamous, front-page headline, Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster, died of a cardiac arrest last Sunday.
The 74-year-old was serving an eight-year prison sentence in Cambridgeshire for sex attacks on four girls, carried out between 1977 and 1985. Clifford admitted at the Leveson Inquiry into media ethics that The Sun’s headline in March 1986 was published with his permission, despite the story being untrue. Starr always denied eating the creature, and Clifford said he allowed the story to go ahead to drum up publicity for the comedian, ahead of his new tour. Clifford, renowned for his celebrity “kiss-and-tell”
newspaper tales, collapsed in his Littlehey Prison cell last Thursday, and suffered a heart attack in hospital the following day. Despite his contentious background, he had a high profile on the Costa del Sol with his Celebrity Golf Tournament, raising hundreds of thousands of euros for charity. But court prosecutors, during his trial, portrayed Clifford as a successful manipulator, promising to boost his victims’ careers and introduce them to celebrities, in exchange for sexual favours. He was arrested by Operation Yewtree detectives in December 2012, and
charged the following year. But he branded his accusers as “fantasists and opportunists”, describing his arrest as “a nightmare”. Clifford’s daughter, Louise, 46, who appeared in court as a witness for her father’s defence, said: “It is with great sadness that I must announce that my father Max Clifford passed away. He had been ill for some time with heart problems. “He was hugely-loved by the many people in his life for the compassionate, kind and funny man that he was.” The former PR mogul crafted a reputation for garnering maximum exposure for the famehungry wannabes on his books, and his previous clients included Muhammad Ali, Frank Sinatra and Chelsea Football Club. On the basis of fresh evidence, allegedly, Clifford was set to appeal against his convictions early next year. But it is not yet known whether the case will be allowed to continue.
Shock Brexit defeat for UK Government THE British Government suffered a humiliating defeat in the House of Commons on Wednesday, when MPs backed an amendment to Theresa May’s flagship Brexit bill, limiting the powers it will grant to ministers. As the Prime Minister prepared to travel to Brussels to meet her fellow EU leaders
yesterday (Thursday), the amendment, by former Attorney General Dominic Grieve, was backed by 11 other Tories. Politicians waved their order papers as the result of the crucial vote was read out, revealing that the government had been defeated by just four votes. A series of last-minute concessions by the Brexit secretary, David Davis, and Justice Minister Dominic Raab, and an intensive campaign by Conservative whips, failed to win over the rebels.
Nina Schick, an expert on European politics, said the voting outcome was “expected” because several Tory MPs insisted they would vote against the Government. She added: “This is a symbolic protest by Conservative MPs, who don’t believe in the Government’s current course on Brexit. “What they’re trying to do by defeating the Government is to show that the power of Parliament is sovereign over the Government.”

Was there anything in the UK Budget for expatriates? By Paul Montague
Partner, blevins Franks
PHILIP Hammond’s second Budget was widely seen as fairly subdued, but was there anything of note for Britons living in the Canary Isles? Personal tax Expatriates earning UK income may benefit from a slight increase in the personal allowance. From 6th April, you can earn £11,850 before paying UK tax (formerly £11,500). For the first time, the marriage allowance will be extended to widows and widowers, enabling 10% of the personal allowance to transfer to the surviving partner. Effective from 29th November, claims can be backdated up to four years. Higher-rate taxpayers are set to be marginally better off, as the upper threshold for 40% tax rates increases in April to
£46,350 (Scotland remains at £43,000). Savings The band of UK savings income that can be earned tax-free remains £5,000, and the annual ISA subscription limit is unchanged at £20,000. Expatriates need to remember that investments like ISAs lose their taxefficient benefits once you are no longer UK resident. Not only are non-residents ineligible to open and save into ISAs, any interest earned becomes liable to taxation in Spain. You should, instead, explore investment alternatives, to suit your circumstances and aims. Pensions Despite speculation, there were no changes to pension tax relief or transfers. The State Pension will increase 3%, in line with inflation, from April. It has already been established that British expatriates in the EU will continue to receive these
cost-of-living increases beyond Brexit. The lifetime allowance also increases with inflation. You can accrue an extra £30,000 on top of the £1 million in pension benefits from April 2018, without incurring 25% or 55% tax penalties. Property The biggest Budget headline was the immediate stampduty relief for first-time buyers, and those buying in high-value areas like London, of up to £300,000 on properties under £500,000. A 3% stamp-duty surcharge remains in place for the purchase of second and subsequent homes, although this now no longer applies where ownership shifts, for example, as a result of divorce or re-mortgaging. Overseas property counts here, so additional stamp duty may be payable if you own your home in Spain, and buy another in Britain. Different stamp-duty rules
usually apply in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In a bid to discourage empty properties, Hammond has handed local authorities the option to increase council tax by 100%, on properties vacant for two years or more. The annual capital-gains tax exemption will track inflation by increasing to £11,700 from April (£5,850 for most trusts). Nonresidents who own interest in commercial UK property are set to be subject to tax on gain for the first time. Currently, ‘non-residential, capital-gains tax’ only applies to residential property (on gains since April 2016), but is due to be charged on the sale of any UK real estate or land, whether owned directly or indirectly, from April 2019 (excluding Scotland). With these extra measures, it is worth reassessing whether holding UK property is the
most tax-and-cost-efficient option for your capital. In this climate of sluggish growth and Brexit uncertainty, it is a good idea to seek specialist, personalised advice, especially if you are concerned about any Budget measure. A specialist in cross-border taxation can guide you on the interaction between UK and Spanish taxation, and available tax-planning opportunities. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. A mortgage-cost puzzle By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
IN previous columns, I referred to the abusive clause of clients having to fork out all the mortgagecost payments. Some courts, following the Spanish Supreme Court judgement of December 2015, considered that this clause was null and void, and that the banks should be responsible for the payments. The courts’ decision was based on the fact that those interested in the registration of the mortgage loans were the banks, which is why they should pay ALL costs. By mortgage costs, we refer to the notary fees, registry fees and the taxes. Usually, the bank withholds a sum to pay a “gestoría”, an agent dealing with the registration, who, at the same time, liquidates and pays taxes and fees. Once the mortgage is finally recorded at the Land
Registry, the bank should liquidate the provision of funds, stating the sums paid as fees, gestoría and taxes. The taxable payment involved in a mortgage loan is the Stamp Duty, which taxes the granting of a public document (notary deed). The High Court of Cantabria recently resolved a case, deciding that the Stamp Duty must be assumed by the client requesting the loan, while the bank has to pay the notary, gestoría and registry. Yet the High Court nullified the clause IN FULL, transferring the payment of the mortgage costs to the client. And so, according to this ruling, it looks as though the bank should pay all the costs. But this is not the case. The High Court of Cantabria considers that the Stamp Duty must be paid by the clients because the Law imposes on them the payment of such tax. In other words, clients are protected against the abusive clauses when the bank enforces them to pay all the costs of the mortgage loan. But they are not protected when the Tax Law states that the borrower is bound to pay Stamp Duty. In fact, the judgement is not
firm and can be appealed before the Supreme Court. Many first-instance Courts are ruling that, in some cases, the taxes must be paid in full by the bank. But, in other cases, it’s a 50/50
split between the customer and the bank. Perhaps the Supreme Court, must, finally, settle on a standard ruling to be applied to all these cases. Mariano Zunino Siri is a

Bremainers’ complainers! A GROUP campaigning for Britain to remain in the EU is outraged at Prime Minister Theresa May’s supposed Phase One agreement on Brexit. Bremain in Spain, which also aims to protect the rights of British migrants living and working in Spain, has delivered a scathing response to Number 10 Downing Street. In 2016, a total of 296,000 British citizens had been living in Spain for more than 12 months, according to the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica (INE). This group is thought to be the largest, single group of UK citizens living in another European country. Sue Wilson, Chair of Bremain in Spain, said: “We did not anticipate that the EU would recommend moving to Phase Two of the negotiations at this stage; not when there are so many unresolved citizens’ rights issues. “Rather than resolve these outstanding issues, both
sides have clearly agreed to lower the bar as to what constitutes ‘sufficient progress’.” The rights of British citizens abroad, and those of EU residents in the UK, were supposed to be one of three separation issues agreed upon before proceeding to Phase Two, alongside that of the Divorce Bill and the UK’s EU borders. However, while a divorce bill has been agreed, and assurances given on Northern Ireland, no such guarantees have been given on citizens’ rights or on the future of Gibraltar’s border. Bremain in Spain members
are concerned that, as the UK moves into the second phase, citizens’ rights will be forgotten in the desperation to negotiate a trade deal. Sue Wilson queried: “If the outstanding issues could not be resolved when we were supposedly one of only three priorities, what chance is there when we are one of many more? “Yet again, our security has been sacrificed for the sake of the security of May and her Government. “I can assure you that British citizens in the EU are not celebrating or grateful, but more fearful than ever of being thrown under the Brexit bus.” She added: “We will continue to fight to protect ourselves in the best way possible, by fighting to remain in the EU.” And though Theresa May’s UK Government may celebrate advancing to Phase Two as a major success, the future of British citizens in the EU remains as uncertain as ever.

From candy canes and sugar mice to yule logs and chocolate coins, sweet treats are an integral part of our Christmas celebrations. Following the success of The Sweet Makers on BBC Two earlier this year, four modern confectioners will recreate the treats of Christmas past - and discover how their predecessors helped create many of the culinary festive traditions that we enjoy today. Chocolatier Paul A Young, bespoke cake decorator Cynthia Stroud, chocolatier Diana Short and sweet consultant Andy Baxendale will use original recipes and equipment to whip up the festive bestsellers of Christmases past. Guided by food historian Dr Annie Gray and social historian Emma Dabiri, they’ll uncover the mystery of what an earth a sugarplum is, before decorating a series of exquisite Twelfth Cakes, affordable only to Georgian’s wealthy elite. As they move into the Victorian era our confectioners encounter the gaping gulf between rich and poor and create treats for both - from Queen Victoria’s favoured Boar’s Head cake to jelly pistols and sugar mice accessible to children with just a few pennies to spend. Finally they’ll explore the wealth of chocolate novelties launched in the 1920s, including the predecessor of that modern Christmas favourite the Chocolate Orange - the Chocolate Apple. In the first episode of this new series presented by Kevin Duala, pictured, four Cheltenham residents pitch their dream projects. All they need is cash to kickstart their ideas. Having donated towards the community fund, local residents gather at the iconic racecourse to hear the pitches and vote for the winner. Chris, who runs an educational garden, wants to help the whole community to put on a show. Football coach Brian wants to spread the word about Powerchair football, so that disabled and able-bodied teams can play together. Viewers return four weeks later to see the winning project in action.

Channel 4, 21:00 In a world where almost every day there are more media revelations of historic abuse and impropriety at the hands of male authority figures, this timely single drama imagines a 27-year-old woman exacting her finely choreographed revenge for such an act. It’s an act of revenge for her teenage self, an act that has been brewing in her head for 10 years. When she was 17, Sarah Ivy was a happy, carefree teenager with a world of opportunity before her; fast forward 10 years and she has two men kidnapped and held in a room... The first man, Nathan Bowyar, is looking forward to his stag do and wedding day, but, before he makes it to either of them, he’s seized and taken to an unknown location.

Kate’s forced to face the reality of her choices when Rob discovers the photographs that she’d hidden - and secrets and lies come tumbling out with devastating results. As Kate struggles with the decision of a lifetime, the team prepares to set up a sting with immigration to catch Marcia in the act. With the police coming in the registry office again Kate’s horrified when an emotionally raw Rob and Rick end up in the same room together and tempers rise. But neither Kate nor the team are prepared for the shocking revelation that’s in store for them when the truth about Kristina and Amir’s sham marriage finally comes out. Meanwhile, Kate and Rick officiate at a no-expense-spared celebrity wedding - but things don’t quite go to plan when the bride and groom realise they’ve forgotten something very important. James is struggling with his decision to go back to living as a man when a couple of surprise visitors deliver some unexpected news.

The only way is up! hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
IF you ever thought that wearing your hair up was stiff and rigid, so you have stayed away from it, then think again about your party hair going up! Even if you don’t have enough to create it, a good hairdresser will add in real hair pieces to create your look. Don’t be too unrealistic and ask for the undoable; keep it simple, and, above all else this
year, not too “setlooking”. Firstly, your hair will be blow dried to create the lift you need; this is where the magic starts. Initially, you may think that
it’s looking too big or wide; this is because your stylist needs to make sure it’s all going to stay in place. Take along an image, if you have your heart set on something specific, but be prepared to be flexible. Don’t forget, too, that it’s going to have volume, so don’t come to the salon in a tight T-shirt; you’re not going to get that over your head! It’s not often you get to go out somewhere where an up-do is needed, so take advantage of the party season and go UP for a change.
Fake that!
By Carl pattison IF you don’t want to splash the cash, then just fake it! That doesn’t mean searching out a copy of a designer dress or outfit; it means you replicate the look, at a more-realistic price. You don’t need to spend over-the-odds to create a glamorous, expensive look, and it’s how you put it together that makes all the difference. OK, so things to look out for are metallics, colours that shine, intricate detailing and opulent-looking fabrics. Look to see if the garment fits you properly. Ill-fitting items, no matter how expensive, can look
cheap. This year sees dramatic detailing which is almost Royal in appearance, embellished dresses, and suits that really catch your eye. You can’t be overdressed this party season, and that includes you guys, too. This year, the de-
tailing on so many clothes has been amazing, to say the least. So, when scouting for your party outfit, think luscious, think opulant and always do glamorous, if you’re going to be noticed among the crowd.
Decorating
for Christmas
COLOUR is one of the main components of interior design, and the same could be said about decorating your house for Christmas.
The colours traditionally associated with this time of year are vibrant reds and greens, and golds and bronzes, to create a warm and homely effect. Colours have a subliminal effect on us, with green being the colour of nature, calm and relaxing, and red representing danger, fire and intense warmth. Of course, living in Tenerife, where it is warm pretty much all year round, you can afford to try different combinations if you prefer. There are several schools of thought when it comes to decorating the tree;
some people like to include all the available colours, while others go for a more-subdued choice, perhaps using different hues that tone with your home to create a co-ordinated effect. Some people from the UK will come on holiday as a novelty to get away from cold weather, and find it highly enjoyable to spend Christmas day on the beach, ensuring they send plenty of gloating photos to their friends back home. On the other hand, those of us who live here are more likely to recreate the traditional setting of the tree, decorations and menus. There are those who say it’s not possible to recreate Christmas in a warm climate, but the most important part of the traditional Christmas is getting lots of people together in the right setting, and celebrating the season in the way you would back home. In other words, it’s the thought that counts. If you’ve got people coming over to stay, you can, of course,
have the best of all worlds - traditional decorations and food, all your family and friends together, and still have the option of going for a walk along the coast, or even to the beach afterwards. One of the few disadvantages of living here is that you can be far away from friends and family, and this is something that hits home, particularly, at this time of year. Nevertheless, it’s heartening to see how friends celebrate together and make their own “Tenerife family”, and it’s great to see people in their glad rags, when you are used to seeing them in shorts and flip flops! A lot of us will be working over Christmas, because most of the businesses here are dependent on tourism, and we should, of course, be grateful for this. But it may mean you aren’t able to celebrate on the actual day. If this is the case, remember that you can recreate your own personal Christmas at any time, since it is, indeed, the thought that counts.

Delicious Deli take-out!
HAVE you ever got home, fancied something nice to eat, but couldn't be bothered to cook, or get ready to go out? So you decide to get a delivery, but then the household argument ensues. “I want Indian”; “No, I want
Chinese”; “But I want fish and chips”; “Hmph, I want a burger”. Sound familiar? Well, Sally and Rob from the Olive Garden Deli have the answer. Sit in the comfort of your own home, order with any device, and get your food brought to your door. There is a selection of starters, pizzas, Indian, (ranging in

FOUR men from La Oratava, accused of stealing 12,000 avocados and some 600 bananas from a local farm, have been detained by the Guardia Civil after a lengthy investigation. The “Operation Pilkington” probe began in September, when the El Caleton farm, in the North of Tenerife, was kept under surveillance, following a series of crimes in the area. The men planned the robbery cleverly, keeping an eye on the staff and farm owners. They noted when the farm would be empty, and took full advantage of bank holidays and weekends. They knew the farm and the surrounding area exceptionally well, and struck when the time was right, piling the stolen fruit in their vehicles, after parking-up carefully for easy loading and a quick getaway. Operation Pilkington was concluded when the Guardia Civil arrested them for breaking and entering, and stealing the fruit. The quartet are now awaiting sentencing.
spice levels), Asian-style curries (including Japanese, Chinese and Thai), kebabs, Kentucky-style chicken, roast dinners and fish and chips. Well, we decided to see how easy it was to order, so, in true Jeremy-Clarkson style, we got the mother involved. Shall we just say that she is in her late seventies, and she doesn’t use a computer, but has recently bought a new tablet. So this could be a challenge! Step 1: Download the app She was directed to the Playstore, although the app is also available on the Apple store. She typed “food booking” in the search bar, then up came the options. So far, so good. Matching up the logo in the newspaper, a reddy-orange f, she then hit install. With the app downloaded, it seemed to be no challenge for our septuagenarian. The next step was to hit “see menu”, and order. Simple enough. Up came a full description of the whole menu with pictures, so you can see what to expect. As you go into each item, you get the option “extra sides” etc. You have to fill in your name, e-mail, phone and address. NO credit-card details are
required. This was a little fiddly for mother, but was no major issue. She also questioned why this was needed, so I explained that the address is so they know where to come, the phone number is in case there is a query with your order, and the e-mail is so that you can receive confirmation of your order. This only needs to be filled in once, as the app saves all the information. Now select a card or cash payment method, and hit “go”. The app takes a few minutes to confirm your order, and give you a delivery time. Perfectly on cue, Dexter, our friendly, delivery guy turns up with the piping-hot food. We sit down to indulge our starter selection of cheesybeer soup, with an option of granary or white, garlic bread, and Stilton and broccoli soup. with the same options. No dirty dishwater here! Both soups were thick and creamy. The cheesy-beer soup was exactly what it says on the tin; beer-cheese with a hint of mustard. And the broccoli and Stilton had just the right amount of great, blue-cheese flavour. Next we tucked into poppadoms with home-
made Indian salad, mint raita and mango chutney. And then came the biggest Lamb Pasanda, a creamy curry with tender chunks of lamb that just melted in the mouth. Mother had a red Thai chicken curry, which she requested not to be too spicy. It was perfect, with a delicious citrusy and coconut flavour. We opted for meat curries with rice, but there were also fish and vegetarian options, and other accompaniments. And then a massive Blue Ridge burger, which was a huge meat patty in a lovely, home-made bun, with plenty of blue cheese, Rich, filling and lush are the three words that spring to mind. Well and truly stuffed, we sat back with the luxury of having only our plates to wash up. The mission proved successful; simple and easy to use, with great food to boot. I can highly recommend downloading the app for all the information. You can order your delivery from Thursday to Saturday 6-10pm, and Sunday 2-10pm. Pick-ups can also be ordered, any day, from 8.30am-10pm.

Watch out for a seafood con SPANISH consumers have been warned about a widespread seafood con, involving scammers swapping expensive products for cheaper alternatives. A new report by the national Agency for Consumer Affairs, Food Safety and Nutrition (Aecosan), has alerted restaurant-goers to
the particular dangers of eating escolar. Escolar, an inexpensive but tasty fish, is being sold
fraudulently as tuna, white tuna, butterfish, cod or grouper in eateries. The practice is especially rife in sushi restaurants. Nicknamed the “ex-lax” fish, or “laxative of the sea”, in the industry, it is considered dangerous enough to be banned in Japan and Italy. Eating the buttery flesh can cause keriorrhea, a form of fish-poisoning, with symptoms ranging from stomach cramps to severe diarrhoea and vomiting.
It is sold, legally, in Spain, and the Aecosan factsheet features a series of recommendations for seafood lovers because the fish “contains a fat composed of waxy esters that humans are unable to digest”. These include removing as much fat from the flesh as possible, especially the skin, never eating it raw, and avoiding the consumption of cooking juices when it is pan-fried. Children, pregnant women,
the elderly, and those with immunodeficiency, or similar ailments, should avoid it entirely. But the issue of misidentification remains, with some experts recommending that shoppers should buy fish only with the head still on to avoid mishaps. Seafood ranks No.1 in the global food-fraud ranking, and a 2010-2013 study by conservation group Oceana, which tested 114 tuna samples in the US, found that 84% were mislabelled.

Ritmania
Ritmania successes
AS winners of the talent competition Islasvision in 2012, performers from Ritmania Fame Academy were recently invited to compete against previous finalists from all over the Canary Islands. There were 12 groups in this year’s final, and the theme was Musicals. The production had to include singing, dancing and musical theatre, and 42nd Street turned out to be a very wise choice for this talented bunch! The dancing was choreographed by Carla Guest, the academy’s proud owner, and 20 students took part, ranging from 8-18. “We were a little nervous when we arrived at the venue, because the stage was carpet, and we were tapping!” said Carla. “But it didn’t matter, because the kids danced and sang their little hearts out.
They put on the performance of a lifetime, and didn’t put a foot wrong. “The judges were on their feet by the end, and we were crowned winners of Islasvision 2017. It was a fantastic achievement.” Their participation in a Tapathon, in a Golf del Sur restaurant, nearly brought further success for the academy, when they attempted, in conjunction with other dance groups
across the UK and Europe, to break the record for the largest number of people tapdancing at the same time. “We were linked up to the UK via mobile, and it was all very exciting,” said Carla. “All the dancers were in good spirits for this great cause. “It was in collaboration with The Performers Project in England, and, this year, involved 7,518 dancers! Each year, the previous year’s numbers are exceeded, and we fell short by just 78 people, so didn’t quite make it in to the Guinness Book of Records. But it was still a tremendous achievement! “The dance groups involved raised a total of £38,600 for Children In Need, which was phenomenal. Ritmania were so happy to stage the first-ever Tapathon, here in Tenerife, and we are looking forward to participating again next year.”
You're never too old! WE had a very special visitor to the refuge at our Christmas event last week. Six years ago, the lovely Gaby, a very young, 93-year-old lady, adopted a small, mixedbreed dog who she named Lilli. I was very fortunate to talk with Gaby, and it was amazing to hear and see the love between her and Lilli, who was happily sitting on Gaby's lap. Their lives are, obviously, ones of great love, and we wish them many more happy years together. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who has helped us over the last year, and to wish you Seasons' Greetings; we look forward to seeing you all in 2018.
Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. draw! LEGENDS Elite and Legends A battled it out to a fantastic draw, with every game, as usual, a nail-biter, and the Elite team living up to their name by racing into a 5-1 lead. Yet Jimmy Mcdaid took the first game for Legends A, only By Andy Maughan for Shaun Wall to beat Graham Bollesty to level the Paddy Davies won two scores. And nobody of those four frames, could have foreseen only for Jimmy to come the next four games all to the rescue for the heading in the same A team, beating Alan direction, with Elite Braid to leave them 5-2 looking untouchable at in arrears. 5-1. Then, up stepped

Jambo and Rich Sargent to take the score to 5-4, and, by this time, it was plain that the tension was affecting both teams. On more than one occasion, the bar actually fell into total silence.
Next up was Elite’s John Willmott, who beat Jambo to put his team just one game from victory. But Jimmy Mcdaid played yet another blinder to complete his hat-trick of wins, putting the result on

a knife-edge again at 5-4 in favour of Elite. It was then down to Paddy and Graham to decide the outcome: success for Elite… or an unlikely draw? Much to the frus-
tration of the entire Elite team, Graham played his cool, calm, calculated game to rescue the evening for his A team, completing a victory to gain an exhausting draw.
Wheelchair Tennis
New fans are netted WHEELCHAIR tennis, gathering pace in the sporting world, showed its global appeal over three days of top competition, high above the Ritz Carlton Abama, in Guia de Isora. Players from 10 nations competed at the Annabel Croft Tennis Academy for prizes and points on the UNIQLO Tour, now in its third year and affiliated
to the senior circuit of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) senior circuit. This was the first Autonomy Open in Tenerife, and organisers hope to make it a regular addition to the international calendar. Paloma Oñate, born in Santa Cruz and now based in Madrid, kept the home flag flying. She was partnered in the ladies doubles with British player Sarah Gaisford. Travelling is all part of the sport’s challenge, and winners of the ladies’ doubles were Gabriela Buehier, from Switzerland
and Poland’s Lucyna Mietrikiewicz, who beat her partner in the singles. Lucyna, a late entry for the competition, said: “I was taking part in a round in Prague when I got the invite. It was short notice, but, with the help of good sponsors and friends, I was able to arrange to get here in time. “It has been a wonderful trip for me, winning the singles and doubles. It’s
my first time in Tenerife, and I have made lots of new friends here. It has given me a boost for my next events in Turkey, Switzerland and England (Preston) in February.” The wheelchair sport is pretty similar to the ablebodied game. The main difference is that a second bounce can be out of the court, which is normal size. The wheelchairs are custom-made to suit each
player, with a wider axle for stability, and a lightweight design for good, reversemobility. In the men’s singles competition, Austrian Martin Legner beat Mike Denayer, of Belgium, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1. He also won the men’s doubles with Spanish partner Francisco Garcia Vena, beating Spain’s Enrique Siscar and Frenchman Nicolas Vanlerberghe 6-4, 6-4.

Three cheers for victory CD Tenerife 3 Reus 0 By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
DON’T get out the party hats just yet, but a disciplined, hard-working win for Tenerife steadied the ship and withdrew the threatened gangplank for coach Pep Marti. Ambitions to conquer their division are still several strides away, but the most important step was to conquer their own short-comings. And this was achieved with a steady defence, a leaner midfield, and the continued goal-touch of Longo. For the last couple of seasons, keeper Dani Hernandez has been spot-on. But, after a series of errors, coach Marti took the bold step of replacing him with 22-year-old local prospect Carlos Abad. Veteran Vitolo was also dropped, leaving Aitor Sanz and the skill-laden Bryan Acosta at the heart of midfield. And it worked well. After 12 minutes, a Juan Carlos pass-cum-shot bounced up, and Longo headed it home for the lead. Even at this stage, it was obvious that Reus were no Brazil. But dropping points to ordinary sides has been dragging Tenerife back all season, so
there was plenty still to do. Casadesus carved an opening for Sanz, but Reus keeper Edgar Badia collected the ball at his feet. His side struggled to make any threats, their monstersized forward Lekic lum-
bering hopefully up front, while Carbonell, trying his luck down the flank, was dispossessed by Camille. Raul showed good vision to launch a long cross into the Reus box, but Badia took the ball cleanly. Murmurs of approval rippled around the ground
during the break and into the second half, as Casadesus fed Carlos, whose shot was grabbed by Badia. Longo then failed with a close-range chance, and saw his follow-up header pawed clear. The best Reus chance came from a free-kick, the ball clearing the defensive wall and bouncing out, off the post. But Tenerife restored their hopes when Carlos beat the defence and squared the ball to Longo, who fired in his ninth goal of the season for a 2-0 lead. Goalkeeper Badia really was a character. Short for his role and wearing pink stockings, his stance was a cross between a crab and a wicket-keeper. But he worked wonders to save his team from a hiding. With 20 minutes left, Suso, returning from injury, replaced Carlos, and we
got the more-direct, lesswasteful version of the captain. Malbasic took over from Tayron, and Vitolo later arrived for Casadesus. All the swaps worked without disrupting the home flow, and Suso laid off a great short pass to Sanz, who was cool with his finish, completing a scoreline that reflected the gap in quality. Badia defied Longo with a tip-over that taller keepers would have struggled to make, and Carlos got to show his worth with a diving save from Dominguez. It was all very pleasing for the 10,184 crowd, but it will be a tougher test for Tenerife on Sunday at Sporting Gijon at 5pm, as they look to improve on their league position of eighth. And all eyes will be on the coach to see whether he can resist changing a winning line-up.
EXTRA-TIME
ROWING: Storm Ana may have side-stepped the South of Tenerife, but it delayed the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge rowing race, scheduled to launch on Tuesday morning. The 10.30am start for the 25 crews was held back because of 45-knot winds and a sea swell of four metres. But they all set out yesterday (Thursday) with renewed enthusiasm - and a little matter of 3,000 nautical miles ahead! RUNNING: Playa San Juan catches the night-time running bug tomorrow (Saturday) with the Carrera Nocturna, starting at 7pm for children, and 9pm for adults. Entrants are donating toys for local children, so pop along and give them an encouraging cheer. The categories are: Children, Fancy-Dress, 1,200m and 5000m. CD MARINO: After a free weekend, CD Marino are back with two home games in four days. On Sunday (17th Dec), they host Union Puerto, of Fuerteventura, at noon, and on Wednesday (20th) at 5pm, they entertain Gran Canaria’s Santa Brigida for clash which was postponed a few weeks ago. Marino are currently 12th in the league, so two wins would be a timely boost before the festive break.

Gaffers set the tone THE difference between the teams occupying the top, and those elsewhere in the league, has again been highlighted. In the Gaffers game against The Tavern A, played at The Loch-In, Risto’s 114 set the finishing tone for the evening, and Gaffers went on to an 8-0 victory. And The Pub showed no sympathy for a gallant Picasso’s team, who were swept aside by the same score. Boothen bounced back from last week’s setback with outstanding finishing, which helped them to a 7-1 win over Emerald Lounge. The cheering from Palms Pool Bar could be heard at the airport as Dennis and crew, after a run of forgettable scores, finally triumphed. The Waterfall were their unlucky opponents, but the result was convincing. Well
done Dennis, on your 6-2 victory. Savour it! Scruffy Macs welcomed Loch-In A, and, in a nip-and-tuck match, the away boys led after the singles. But Kev and Jamie helped to get Scruffy back on track, taking the last three games to show why they are top. Sandys had a chance to take a good lead at the top, because Legends were without a match. But Ed and his Marilyns A team had other ideas, surprising the leaders by pinching the 701 game and a 5-3 win. Bar Leones won the threesome leg to hold Buzzin B’s to a respectable 4-4 draw, and The Loch-In B entertained Pas O Nadas B and their entourage. But the away support could not match the quality of darts, as The Loch-In B ran out 6-2 winners. Both other games followed form, with Nauta

Hot form goes cool Iberostar’s highs and lows Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 2 Real Betis 3
LOSING a crowd-pleaser is little compensation, but Granadilla remain in fifth place going into the festive break. A run of three games in eight days might well have played a part, but the home side must be pleased with their rise up the Spanish Premier League. And they are poised to push on to loftier heights in 2018. Impatient or what? Both teams came out, all guns blazing, and Granadilla took a first-minute lead through Sara Tui. But they had little time to celebrate, because Bea Parra levelled just 60 seconds later. That’s the way it stayed until half-time, but more goals
were inevitable in a very open game. A header from Betis player Rocio made it 1-2 after 66 minutes, this time Granadilla being the ones to snap back within a minute. Cristina Martin-Prieto continued her scoring form to restore equality. There was no question of either side settling for a share of the spoils; both pushed forward, but it was Betis who clinched the game with a second strike from Rocio. Even with their hectic programme, Granadilla took time out at training to show their pink support for this Sunday’s Walk For Life fundraising stroll from Siam Mall at 11am.
THAT honeymoon feeling looked set to keep going for new coach Fitios Katsikaris as his Iberostar Tenerife pulled off a nailbiting, 91-93 away win against secondplaced Barcelona on Sunday.
Iberostar demonstrated stamina and commitment in the league encounter. But, on Wednesday, their European Champions League clash with Latvia’s Ventspils threw a spanner in the works as they went down 71-65 at home. The Barcelona clash was a real see-saw, with the regular quarters going 1725, 19-13, 24-20, and 17-19. That left the teams tied at 77-77 to set up a thrilling conclusion. It took all the cunning of the coach, and the skill of his players, for them to emerge
16-14 winners to take the points. Mateusz Ponitka proved to be the difference as he racked up 28 points. That lifted Tenerife to ninth place, and they have a few games in hand on their rivals. Tomorrow (Saturday), their hunt for points takes them to Malaga for a clash with Unicaja, tip-off 6pm. The European cup defeat was fuelled by an injury to Mateusz Ponitka early on, and another to San Miguel halfway through.
Yet it had been a confident home start with a 17-6 first quarter, but the visitors grabbed control, winning the second quarter 27-12 before Tenerife returned to calmer waters with 15-15, and 21-23. American Mike Tobey picked up much of the slack for the injuries, leading the scoring with 20 points. Although a setback, Tenerife are still second in their section, and almost certain to go through to the next group stage.

Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice he majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good?
This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1%
£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax
What is the alternative?
A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.
The returns over the last few years have been:

2013 7.6%
2014 7.5%

2016 6.5%
T
he growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant.
