‘Expats were first priority’ Continued from Front Mrs May writes: FROM the very beginning of the UK’s negotiations to leave the European Union, I have been consistently clear that protecting the rights of both EU citizens living in the UK, and UK nationals living in the EU, was my first priority. I know that the referendum result has caused considerable anxiety for many of you and your families. That is why, at the beginning of the negotiating process, I made it clear that any deal guaranteeing the rights of EU citizens living in the UK would be dependent on such an offer being reciprocated for our UK nationals in the remaining Member States. So I am delighted to announce that, in concluding the first phase of the negotiations, it is exactly what we have achieved. From speaking to my counterparts across Europe, I know that they hugely value the UK nationals living in their communities. We have worked hard to address the very complex and FOUR mini-earthquakes, situated around Teide, and all with very low intensity, have been registered by the National Geographic Institute ((IGN). The first Tenerife tremor occurred on Wednesday night, at 11.23pm in Guia de Isora, with a magnitude of 1.5 and a depth of 14 kilometres. Just one minute later, another tremor was registered in Vilaflor with similar characteristics: a magnitude of 1.6 and 15kms deep. And, exactly 60 seconds later, a third mini-tremor occurred in Los Reolejos, also with a 1.6 magnitude and 21kms deep. The last of the earthquakes, recorded by the IGN, happened yesterday
technical issues that needed working through before a formal agreement could be reached. The details are set out in the Joint Report, agreed by the UK Government and the European Commission, as published on Friday, 8th December. This agreement guarantees that your rights as residents in the EU will be protected in the Withdrawal Agreement, so you can have certainty that you will be able to receive healthcare rights, pension and other benefits provisions, as you do today. You can also benefit from existing rules for past and future Social Security contributions. Furthermore, we have agreed that close family members will be able to join you in the Member State where you live, after the UK has left the EU. This includes existing spouses and civil partners, unmarried partners, children, dependent parents and grandparents, as well as children born or adopted outside of the UK after 29th March 2019.
While I hope this agreement will bring you some reassurance, I know there are a few important issues that have yet to be concluded. We raised these concerns, including the ability of UK nationals living in the EU to retain certain rights if they move within the EU. But the EU was not ready to discuss them in this phase of the negotiations. We will continue to raise these issues with the EU in the New Year. I will continue to push for the best possible deal for our nationals across the EU, but, in the meantime, please do sign up for the latest updates on gov.uk. The constructive way in which these talks have been conducted gives me confidence that we will achieve a final deal that reflects the strong partnership between the UK and our European partners, and is in the mutual interest of citizens living across the continent. I wish you and your families a great Christmas and a very happy New Year.
Driver arrested for assaulting two cops LOCAL Police in Guia de Isora arrested a man on Wednesday for using aggressive behaviour and assaulting two officers. The entire episode started at around 7am, as some residents were out enjoying their daily exercise. Suddenly, they were pestered by a motorist, who was driving a car recklessly around the town, with its lights switched off. The neighbours felt they were being harassed, and, after enduring many insults, one of them telephoned the police to make a complaint. Within minutes, the cops arrived, but the driver had disappeared. The two policemen mounted a hunt for him, and, after searching the town’s streets, they eventually found the car, but no driver! But as it was in the process
of being transferred to the local police pound, the driver reappeared with his girlfriend, who actually owned the vehicle. The 23-year-old man then tried to stop the car being towed away, bombarding the tow-truck driver with a series of insults. But the situation turned violent, the man launching a physical attack on the two cops, who sustained considerable injuries, and, later, had to receive treatment in an ambulance. Police detained and identified the person as J.A.M., a Guia de Isora resident, who already has a police record for theft, as well as theft with violence. The Guardia Civil have informed the Local Police that the man is already under investigation for several robberies in the area.
Heating costs go Tenerife mini-quake through the roof quartet not noticed
(Thursday) at 1.01am, again at Guia de Isora, with a magnitude of 1.5 and 19kms deep. There was not enough intensity in any of the three tremors to be felt by locals, but the number of movements, up to 12 since
Tuesday, has raised a few eyebrows. The largest of the movements recorded this week took place in the early hours of Wednesday (4.05am), out at sea, between La Gomera and Tenerife, and reached a magnitude of 2.4.
CUSTOMS officers in Munich, unable to get rid of 550kgs of confiscated marijuana, because they had no facilities capable of destroying the huge amount, had a brainwave. It led to the power station in Olching, northwest Munich. There, the equivalent of around 3.8 million joints of cannabis, delivered by truck and guarded carefully by hooded cops and Customs officers, were incinerated, to help heat homes there. “For us,” said Customs spokesman Christian Schüttenkopf, casually, “it’s just rubbish that needs to be destroyed.” Although the marijuana
came from Albania, the exact origin was unknown, and, thus, could not be used for medical purposes. German Customs discovered the drugs south of Nuremberg, a year ago, in a truck from Serbia, and the driver is still in custody. But it wasn’t just the quantity that was so impressive, but also the quality of the drug. It contained an activeingredient content of up to 16%, while Customs normally confiscate the same drug with a 12% content. It would be worth several million euros, said spokesman Schüttenkopf.

The Pink power surge!
BIGGER, better, and bolder! The Walk For Life broke even more records as 4, 500 people, and the 20,000 euros raised, took the 13th annual event to a new level. Siam Mall forecourt was bristling with pink volunteers on Sunday morning, as T-shirts, wings, wigs, and even dogs, were decorated in the charity’s colour. Miguel Rodriguez Fraga and Jose Julian Mena, respective Adeje and Arona Mayors, joined founding force Brigitte Gypen as the wave set off. Traffic tooted and beeped on the TF1 motorway below, as the bridge became a pink river of joyous walkers. Many wore messages dedicated to those they had lost to breast cancer, and there were a few tears, mixed with fond memories.
Tragic car crash
A MAN aged 29 died after crashing on the TF-1 in the Adeje area in the early hours of Wednesday. The car, heading northbound to Santa Cruz, was being driven at around 79km/h. Emergency Services arrived at the scene, along with the fire crew, to help retrieve the victim from the vehicle as he was trapped. He was treated by the Canarian Emergency Team (SUC), but was later confirmed dead because his injuries were so serious.
But the walk is very much a declaration of hope and
support for those affected, and a fierce resolution to
research a cure. The route took the walkers down to Avenida Las Americas and along the beach promenade, through to Compostela Beach, where pink-and-white balloons filled the sky at the finishing line. Music belted out from the stage, as tired feet found reserves of energy to dance. And all along the walk, people flocked to see the spectacle. Early diagnosis of breast cancer is a big key, and getting that message across to all ages is another big aim for the charity. Mayor Fraga described it as “a special international day that has become an event that promotes social harmony”. Arona Mayor Mena stressed the importance of the event in raising awareness of breast cancer, with so many families in South Tenerife suffering as a result of the disease. Big thanks to all who helped make it such a great day. It’s a tough act to follow next year, but just watch them go! Founder Brigitte Gypen is in no doubt. “Now we have 20,000 reasons to meet again next year, and bring even more people along,” she said. Photos: Sir Old Golfer
Tenerife North is renamed
TENERIFE North Airport no longer exists… at least, not under that name. Raul Medina Caballero, General Director of Civil Aviation, has informed La Laguna Mayor Jose Alberto Dias of a new name. It was agreed, unanimously, last year that the name of the airport be changed, and last week it came about. It was out with the old and in with the new: goodbye Tenerife North Airport and hello La Laguna North City Airport! The North airport actually began operating in 1929, and, a year later, Los Rodeos was its designated name. Work began on a terminal in 1943, and the airport was finally completed in 1946 when it was opened, officially, to airtraffic, both national and international. Although, in the 1970s, it was renamed Tenerife North Airport, it is still known, popularly, as Los Rodeos Airport. Tragically, it became notorious in 1977 when two planes collided on the runway in thick fog, killing 583 people. It was the highest number of fatalities (excluding ground fatalities) of any single accident in aviation history. The island’s other airport, Tenerife South, was inaugurated in 1978 because the North Airport did not meet technical requirements, through its location and the adverse weather conditions.
Woman’s body found on beach A WOMAN’S body was found on Wednesday morning, washed up on Granadilla’s El Cabezo beach, near the rocks. The Emergency Services, who were told of the discovery at around 8.45am, confirmed that she was dead when they arrived at the scene. The Guardia Civil have launched an investigation, although her identity was not known at thtime. At present the identification of the woman is unknown. The Guardia Civil are investigating the case.

Emergency Services will welcome drones SANTA Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez Deputy Mayor Zaida González, responsible for Public Security, have revealed that the borough’s new “Drones Unit” will soon be in operation. They will be a great asset to the Emergency Services because they can be used in many circumstances, including land and coastline rescues, throughout the Canaries. The unit, compris-
ing two drones, will be looked after by the Civil Protection team, and will be operated by pilots with specialised training. These special devices are valued at around 10,000 euros, and each weighs around
25kgs, with an approximate flying time of 25 minutes. They have a special system for capturing and recording images, which means they will be an essential search-and-rescue asset.
1m-euro facelift for sportcentre
AT last, after years of neglect, Arona’s municipal sports complex in Los Cristiano, including the 50m swimming pool, has received the go-ahead for a complete facelift. The Olympic-size, outdoor pool attracts many swimming clubs from all over Europe, especially in the winter months, for competition training. The complex was built over 30 years ago, and not much has changed there since. Now, though, the plan is to complete the refurbishment in sections, so the pool remains open, to enable regulars and visitors to carry on swimming. The entire facelift, which is costing over one million euros, will start over the next few months.
the Clownbaret company will be on-stage in the Cultural Centre from 6pm (entrance: a new toy). At 7pm, the annual Christmas Carol concert in Callao Salvaje, organised by the local Community church and Adeje Council, brings together many traditions and singers. There will also be an annual donation of toys (unwrapped please) for Adeje’s children in need. And on Calle Grande, in the town, Adeje’s municipal band will playing from 8pm. The Santa Úrsula choir sing carols in the Calle Grande on Christmas Eve night, and, on Tuesday (26th Dec) from 5pm, the new Adeje children’s Christmas Park will open in El Galeón sports centre, until 5th January. There will also be open-air cinema (Gru,
mi villano favorito 3 and Guardianes de la Galaxia 2, in Spanish) in the Plaza de España from 7pm on 26-27th December. On Thursday 28th December, at 8.30pm, there is an adult storytelling session in the Canarian Library, with actress Carmen Cabeza. And on Saturday (30th Dec), in the Plaza César Manrique, there will be loads of fun for children with bouncy castles, perfor-
mances and lots more, followed at 7pm by a Christmas concert in La Caleta’s San Sebastian Church.

Royal praise for top tourist areas KING Felipe VI, who spoke at last week’s Maspalomas International Tourism Forum, in Gran Canaria, made particular mention of some tourism destinations, which are members of the AMT, the Canarian Association of Tourism Boroughs. The Spanish King highlighted the work carried out by Arona and Adeje, as well as by San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, as excellent examples of how renovation works within the tourism industry pays off. He also met mayors of the AMT member boroughs, and those of Guía de Isora and Mogan. “Three Canarian boroughs are among the top eight in Spain for overnight tourism stays,” King Felipe told the
forum. “These are older destinations, which have worked hard to meet the renovation challenge.” Also present were mayors from the member boroughs of the Tourism Sun and
Beach Alliance, Salou and Benidorm, an alliance to which Arona, Adeje and San Bartolomé de Tirajana also belong. Among other topics, those in attendance discussed
collaborative projects being prepared for Fitur, the next Spanish tourism trade fair. Representing the Canarian boroughs were Mayors José Julián Mena, (Arona), José
Miguel Rodríguez Fraga (Adeje) and Marco Aurelio Pérez, (San Bartolomé de Tirajana), as well as Tourism Councillors from those three municipalities, and Guía de Isora.
150m-euro project’s such a mighty tonic
Hybrid sales
booming SPAIN’S electric and hybrid vehicle sales have shot up more than 83% from this time last year, according to the Spanish Association of Manufacturers of Automobiles and Trucks (ANFAC). Registrations of hybrid vehicles have risen to more than 51,000 since the start of the year, while sales of electric vehicles have increased by 78% from the same period last year. In November alone, electric-vehicle sales rose by 30%, and, in total, more than 7,500 electric vehicles have so far been sold in 2017.
EXPOVIDA 2020 is a new tourism-and-health concept, inviting the world’s leading health innovators and providers to come together, under one roof, in Adeje. This private enterprise, at a projected cost of 150 million euros, completely funded by private enterprise, will be a permanent expo in what was Sky Park, offering tourists a new reason to visit Adeje. With 1,600sq/m available, the space will have a myriad of zones, featuring different aspects of health and wellbeing. And various countries and companies will be invited to use the space to promote the latest medical and technological developments in the world
of health. The building will be topped by a huge sculpture of “Evva”, an interactive sculpture because, says architect Roberto Delgado, the interior of the “body” will house different salons for learning, promotion, and interaction with health exponents and providers. Adeje Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira spoke at
the launch of the project, welcoming the initiative and describing it as, “a pioneer at European level and an axis for health and wellbeing”. He added: “With this initiative, Adeje will become a reference point for investigation, diagnostics and health-related conferences, as well as events from both professional and training points of view.”

Super Heroes are greeting the kids
Bus station prepares for a major overhaul CABILDO President Carlos Alonso visited Costa Adeje bus station on Tuesday, to announce details of a new route, along with improvements to some important existing ones.
TO the delight of children all over the island, El Ferial has opened its doors again at the Recinto Ferial Fairgrounds in Santa Cruz, to celebrate 28 years of the PIT (Parque Infantil del Tenerife), for youngsters of all ages. It opened yesterday (Thursday), and remains open until 5th January 2018. And, as in previous years, it is expected to welcome over 50,000 people of all ages. The PIT was born in 1989 as an initiative by the Canarian Government, aimed at offering a place where the oldest and the youngest were able to enjoy learning, with play. This year’s theme will be Super Heroes, with
many favourite characters making daily appearances. There will also be more than 40 fairground attractions, supervised by professionals for the safety and security of everybody. In addition are the many educational games and activities, for all the family to get involved. The entrance fee today (Friday) will be a special five euros per person, but from then on it will cost nine euros. Opening Times: December 22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30: 10am-8pm. Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve: 10am-3pm. Christmas Day, New Year’s Day: 3-8pm. January 2, 3 and 4: 10am-8pm. January 5: 10am-3pm.
He also spoke of changes and increased parking in the bus station itself, all geared towards benefiting the public-transport service available to residents and visitors, here in the South. From September 2018, the new 424 route will link Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje, via Torviscas Alta, passing by the borough’s main theme parks and commercial centres. The route, planned in response to public demand, will benefit both residents and tourists. Of the new route, Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodriguez Fraga underlined “the importance of a good public-transport service for both residents and tourists”.
He added that Adeje Council would continue to work with the Cabildo to improve that service for all. Alonso also stressed the importance of continuing to improve transport options, saying sustainability was linked directly to a properlyworking public service. He also alluded to the need for improvements to the island’s North-South links. Titsa, the public-service bus company owned by the Cabildo, also announced changes to the 483 route, which links Los Cristianos and Los Abrigos. It is
extending its operating hours until 12.15am, serving Las Chafiras and Golf del Sur. The 473 (Los CristianosCosta Adeje-Callao Salvaje) will also extend its hours of service to 12.10am. The company has added six extra runs to the 110 Saturday service, between Costa Adeje and Santa Cruz. Costa Adeje bus station, also set for an overhaul, has plans to include extra parking to enable commuters to use the station, and the bus services there, with increased ease.
Do Canaries really have the worst quality of life? THE sun is shining brightly, the sky is blue and forecasters predict it will stay the same way over Christmas, as it does most years.
“The facets of well-being” report has been presented by the BBVA Foundation, in collaboration with the Valencian Institute of Economic Research (Ivie). The survey analysed 12 indicators, including per capita income, long-term unemployment, inequality, poverty, life expectancy, the percentage of the population enjoying good health, obesity, smoking, and the population which has, at least, passed uppersecondary education. Both the Canaries and Andalucia had a total score of 17, from a minimum of
Yet a new study tells us that the Canaries, along with Andalucia, have the worst “quality of life” indicators in Spain. But who, in their right minds, would want to move to the storm-swept mainland when they can stay here and top up their tans throughout the winter?

Above average are the Balearic Islands (32), Asturias and Aragón (33), Castilla y León (36), Cantabria (37), Madrid (41 points), Navarra (42) and La Rioja and the Basque Country (43 points), which are also the territories with the highest welfare index. Forgotten, historic cave is rat-ridden! AN old, forgotten cave in Icod de los Vinos, which was eventually rediscovered and later revealed as dwellings for the original Guanche people, has been allowed to fall into ruin. Locals in the northern Tenerife municipality of Santa Cruz reported that it was of historical value, yet nobody was prepared to take care of this national heritage. There was quite a scare when the cave came to light in the early 1970s, because it is a volcanic tube, which, inside, has several branches with external exits. Many of the openings have been blocked through landslides, but it was considered one of the oldest aboriginal finds in Tenerife. Human bones, alongside fragmented pottery, cloth and shells were unearthed when it was excavated. It was thought that the cave had been the dwelling and burial grounds of the important “Menceyato of Icod”, one of the nine
territorial demarcations in which the Guanches had divided the island. In 2005, the area was declared a place of cultural interest by the Canarian Government. And a wrought-iron gate and surround were installed to conserve and protect the national treasure. But the gate has been pulled off, and, sadly, the original Guanche house has been used over the years
as a dumping ground, for plastic bags and the most unusual objects, such as typewriters. In fact, the cave has been left to fall apart, and it is over-run with rats and other creatures. Icod residents say the Guanche Cave has been totally forgotten because it does not generate money from tourists, like its neighbouring Cueva del Viento.
Now, though, they are prepared to take care of the cave themselves, because they are aware of its importance. And, they add, they cannot wait any longer, because they have seen the cave being destroyed and looted. It has even been used as a weapon between local political parties, who have promised to take care and protect the unique area.
It’s quite plane that it’s a car!
A M E R I C A N company Samson Motors has designed the world’s first flying sports car, which can hit speeds of up to 200mph and reach heights of up to 13,000ft! The Switchblade, a threewheeler, which functions as a normal sports car, can transform into an aircraft with ease. After a flight, the car returns to driving mode, with the wings safely stowed and protected. It has side-by-side seating for two, room for 50lbs of luggage, and a wide cabin, as well as the power-to-weight ratio of a 2017 Corvette. The clean, Italian-inspired shape, which could be available from 2019, is
designed to produce a down-force in gusty conditions, stabilising the
lightweight vehicle on the road. And the wings are set at the correct angle, so you literally fly the plane off the runway. And landings are similar, in that you simply fly the vehicle onto the runway to land. Oregon-based Samson says that prices will start at around £90,000, but once you’ve bought the car, you
can’t just jet off. A privatepilot’s licence is required to fly it, and, on the roads, a full driving licence is needed. There are three versions of the innovative car: the Snowbird, for colder climates, the Trek, for heavy-duty landing, and the Aurora, which is a combination of the Snowbird and Trek. A Samson spokesperson said: “You can drive the Switchblade to any public airport to take off, and may land at the same, or any other, public airport.” The company is even investigating ways of how it can be environmentallyfriendly. The spokesman added: “We have already finished lay-outs for both hybrid, and electric, drive-systems, pending an appropriate battery solution.”

Spain’s students are big catch in Britain THE number of Spanish students accepted for British courses has risen again, according to figures released by UK-based Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). They show that Spaniards are the fourth-most-likely EU citizens to be offered a place at a British university. And of the 3,455 from Spain applying, 2,250 were accepted this year, putting the country ahead of US and German students, among others. British universities actually accepted far more Chinese students (9,215) than any other nationality, followed by those from Hong Kong (3,700), France (3,145) and Malaysia (3,090). Of the EU countries, France, Cyprus (2,635) and Italy (2,505) were the only nations to beat Spain’s 2,250 total. Yet Spaniards are just 11th in the list of foreign students applying to Britain. That suggests they are more attractive to institutions than compatriots from the likes of Ireland, Singapore, India, the US and Poland, who apply in greater numbers, but receive fewer offers. But, to be fair, the figures apply to those taking fulltime courses only, and do not consider Erasmus students, or others doing shorter exchanges. The quality of institution they apply to is also not specified. Britain has seen a steady increase in the number of applications (and acceptances) from Spanish students. In 2008, just 725 Spaniards were accepted, but the total has risen every year in between, and doubled since 2010! However, this year’s acceptance increase was significantly lower than the previous two years. But whether or not it makes a difference, this is the first cycle of applications since Brexit. A statement from the UCAS read: “There were also notable increases from Lithuania (up 12% proportionally), Poland (up 6% proportionally), and Spain (up 5% proportionally). However, the number of acceptances fell for most EU countries.”

Mosquitoes that Did Russians bite your ankles in Catalans A SCARY, Yellow Fever Mosquito, able to transmit diseases from person to person, has taken up residence in Fuerteventura. These little pests, known as Aedes Aegypti, have been seen, and felt, around the island, as confirmed by Miguel Rodríguez, Fuerteventura’s Director of Health. Also confirming the finding was the Director for Public Health José Juan Alemán, and Domingo Núñez, head of Public Health, Epidemiology Service. They all maintain that though these mozzies do transmit various diseases in their own country of origin, there is nothing to fear in the Canaries. That’s because the diseases they carry and transmit, such as Yellow Fever, Dengue and Chikungunya, have long since been eradicated from the islands, so they simply cannot transmit any of these serious diseases.
A BRITISH Parliamentary Committee, which has launched an inquiry into the “fake news” phenomenon, will hear testimonies into how Russian entities interfered in Catalonia’s independence referendum.
Also, a plan is being formed to eradicate these pests. The Canaries have actually been under surveillance for the last few years, and traps were set up recently because there had been reports of mosquito bites leaving people with exaggerated skin reactions. The Aedes Aegypti, which originates in Africa, is actually smaller than the native Canarian mosquitoes. But its bite is more severe, with a much larger welt and a more intense itch. The bite may weep, and a scab could appear after a few days. Another characteristic is
that it tends to move around the ground. It is prone to biting around the ankles, and, because of its lack of a buzz, tends to do its nasty deed at night. If you have any suspicions of being bitten by this particular mosquito, it is advisable to approach the local medical services to report the case, so that a record can be made of its whereabouts. It is believed that the mosquito gains entry from place to place via the importation of fruit and vegetables, passing through ports and airports.
The investigation is being carried out by the UK Government’s Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee, chaired by Conservative MP Damian Collins. Its aim is to uncover how so-called ‘fake news’ has impacted on important political events in the West recently, including the US Election and Brexit. The committee held its first session on Tuesday, collecting evidence about how online information was, reportedly, manipulated in the run-up to the Catalan independence

ussians ‘interfere’ atalans’ huge vote? vote on 1st October. Collins explained how the committee’s objective was to expose how “fake news” was being used as a weapon by foreign governments in electoral processes. He also revealed that committee members had already received evidence to suggest that there was foreign interference in the Catalan referendum. An alleged trail of “fake news”, left by Russian websites and social media profiles, was detected during the recent Catalan independence movement, according to an investigation carried out by Spanish newspaper El Pais. Three experts on the issue are expected to testify at the session: David Alandete, El Pais Deputy Director, Francisco de Borja Lasheras, Director of the European Council on Foreign Relations’ (ECFR) Madrid Office, and Mira Milosevich-Juaristi, As-
sociate Professor of International Relations at Madrid’s IE Business School. The committee also plans to interview the heads of major global technology companies, such as Facebook and Twitter. It will then produce a report for the British Government, detailing its findings, which should be published around Easter 2018. Meanwhile, over 75% of expats living in Catalunya are vehemently opposed to the region obtaining independence, according to a survey. It was conducted by Spanish Property Insight, and, worryingly for the region, 45% of those polled also revealed they were considering leaving Catalunya, as a result of uncertainty surrounding the area’s future. The results of the study come ahead of Catalans, who headed to the polls yesterday (Thursday)
to elect a new regional parliament. While Inés Arrimadas’ Ciutadans (Cs) party is predicted to win the most seats, a coalition between proindependence parties Esquerra (ERC), led by Oriol Junqueras, and Junts per Catalunya, headed by the exiled Carles Puigdemont, are expected to form a government, which would be a real blow for Madrid. “The independence movement has come to dominate public life in Catalonia,” said Mark Stücklin, head of Spanish Property Insight. “But the identity politics of it leaves many expats cold. “Expats choose to live in Catalonia because of its high quality of life, so they struggle to relate to the historical grievances and nationalist emotions of the independence movement.” He added: “An exodus of expats would be a disaster for Catalonia.”

Taiwan conmen are sent home by Spain
CHINA’S request to extradite 121 Taiwanese conmen has been given the green light by the Spanish National Court. The decision follows the arrest of 269 people in connection with an elaborate telephone scam, which swindled working-class people in China out of an estimated total of 16 million euros. The gang had offices in Madrid, Barcelona and Alicante, and the racket involved members posing as friends or family, warning victims about fraudulent schemes. In subsequent calls, they pretended to be police or judicial officials, convincing thousands to deposit cash in their bank accounts. One young man is reported to have committed suicide after handing over money he had saved for his studies. Following the arrests, a number of gang members
told investigators they had come to Spain thinking they would be employed as tour guides. There was a diplomatic element to court proceedings, with the defendants’ lawyers arguing that they should not be extradited because of the ongoing dispute over Taiwan, which split from China in 1949, and remains under self-rule. But China claims sovereignty over the island, and the Madrid court noted that Taiwan has had no diplomatic relations with the European Union since 1978. “The international community, except for those countries with which (Taiwan) has diplomatic relations, consider Taiwan to be part of China, and take the view that its independence cannot be achieved unilaterally,” said the written ruling.

Delays to Brexit talks unsettle pound Sterling By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. It’s been a volatile two weeks for the pound, with markets having plenty to react to. GBP/EUR struck a high of 1.1491 euros, but quickly slumped again, reaching a low of 1.1297. After GBP/USD hit a high of US$1.3453, the pairing swiftly dropped to a low of US$1.3306, although the exchange rate has now recovered much of its losses. EUR/GBP slumped to £0.8763 after the latest European Central Bank (ECB) meeting, but quickly rebounded to a high of £0.8851. EUR/USD trended somewhat more
calmly between a high of US$1.1847, and a low of US$1.1722. There has been plenty on the economic, political and monetary fronts to keep the pound on volatile form these past couple of weeks. The Bank of England (BoE) opted to keep interest rates frozen at 0.5%. While this was largely expected, the fact that not one policymaker voted for another round of tightening, showed the BoE was feeling very cautious indeed about the economy. Markets didn’t have long to dwell on the monetarypolicy outlook, however, as there was plenty happening, with regards to Brexit, to keep Sterling volatile. With the EU having set Friday 8th as the deadline for agreeing issues such as the Brexit divorce bill and the Irish border in order for the European Council to vote in favour of beginning trade negotiations, it seemed that, after months of fretting over the divorce bill, it could have been the Irish border that derailed the Brexit timetable permanently.
The UK made some concessions, but these were swiftly blocked by Northern Ireland’s DUP, who Theresa May has to keep on side, in order to hold a majority in Parliament. Then, last Friday, the European Council agreed that sufficient progress had been made in talks, and that discussions on trade could begin. Sterling wasn’t happy, however, after many officials warned that this was going to be much harder than the initial phase of talks. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker also soured appetite for the pound, after stating that talks on trade wouldn’t start until around March. After striking a six-month high on the 8th after the Irish border issues were resolved, GBP/ EUR quickly tumbled, and is now back around the levels seen a fortnight ago. The euro had hit a oneweek low after the latest European Central Bank (ECB) meeting, which gave no new details about when the quantitative easing programme may end.
Policymakers also kept their inflation projections sluggish, despite being upbeat about the Eurozone economy, suggesting monetary tightening is still a long way away. GBP/USD spiked last week, after the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) delivered the expected interest rate hike. Markets had prepared for this, so the move created a good opportunity to sell USD, driving the price lower. At the same time, the FOMC revised its growth and employment forecasts up, but left its inflation projections unchanged. The pace of data and other developments, scheduled over the coming days, is starting to slow now as the Christmas break approaches, but there will still be some points of interest. Trading may grow thinner as the days go by, but events such as a speech from BoE Governor Mark Carney on the 20th, US third-quarter GDP on the 21st, and personal-consumption, expenditure figures on the
22nd, will ensure things don’t get too calm. Political developments are likely to cause friction as well. There could still be plenty of developments with regards to Brexit to unsettle the pound, especially as the Cabinet is today beginning to discuss its aims for the second phase of negotiations. US President Donald Trump is getting closer to being able to implement his taxreform plans; indications that more progress is being made that would support USD and weaken EUR. ITV1, 18.40 West End legend Michael Crawford will guide seven well known celebrities through an all singing, all dancing musical theatre extravaganza, coming to ITV this Christmas. Hosted by Freddie Flintoff, All Star Musicals will feature a cast of famous faces who will each perform an iconic number from a hit musical at the legendary Palladium Theatre in London’s West End. Sir Tony Robinson, Denise Lewis OBE, Nicky Campbell, Sally Phillips, Lucy Fallon, Michael Parr and Rebecca Front, all of whom have been selected based upon their stand out performance skills, will train with some of the West End’s most seasoned performers as they get to grips with their chosen song. They will then debut their number - supported by a sensational chorus line - to a packed house at the London Palladium. Along the way they will be guided by one of Britain’s best loved musical stars Michael Crawford, who will be on hand to offer guidance, advice and encouragement ahead of their big performance. With both Tony and Olivier awards to his name, Michael has amassed a West End career spanning five decades. Presenter Freddie Flintoff will soon himself be no stranger to the stage, as he will be making his debut in Fat Friends the musical later this year. The show will feature numbers from a range of famous musicals, including Chicago, Evita and Guys and Dolls, with the theatre audience deciding at the end of the night whose performance wowed them the most.

Mary, Mel and Sue’s Big Christmas Thank You
BBC1, 19.00 Mary Berry, Mel & Sue are back together and joining forces to surprise a community centre in the Rhondda Valley in Wales, with a very special Christmas party and a whole bunch of fabulous surprises. This year Christmas is coming early for a Welsh Community Centre. The centre was set up by mum-of-three Buffy, after a run of closures (from the school to the post office) threatened to kill off community spirit once and for all. Buffy and her team keep the locals united by bringing together toddlers, teens and OAPs for bingo, food and fun - funded in part by bucket-shaking and sheer willpower. Now, Mary, Mel and Sue are going to help Buffy give the locals a surprise Christmas party that they’ll never forget. With Mary Berry in charge of the fabulous Christmas feast and Mel and Sue on decorating duty, it’ll be a truly magical festive party.

Tom Jones & Beverley Knight’s Gospel Christmas
02:00..... Would I Lie to You?
BBC2, 21.00 Gospel Christmas will come from the heart of Cardiff this festive period, celebrating a special evening of music and Christmas cheer with Sir Tom Jones and Beverley Knight. The blend of traditional gospel, carols and songs of spiritual intent from modern greats like Prince and Bob Dylan, performed by choirs and a house band from the British gospel scene, will add up to the freshest of winter warmers. Sir Tom pays homage to a genre that is very close to his heart, and accompanies the audience back home to the South Wales valleys and to the church where the sounds that led Tom on his musical journey began. Meanwhile Beverley makes a welcome return to her roots after co-hosting last year’s inaugural show, and sings uplifting and joyful songs that will get you in the mood for Christmas. They will be joined by Brit and Mobo Award-winning singer-songwriter Jessie Ware, soul singer Kwabs and the London Community Gospel Choir and the House Gospel Choir.

BBC1, 21.00 1686. Eighteen year-old Nella Oortman knocks at the door of a grand house in the wealthiest quarter of Amsterdam. Full of hopes and dreams, she has come from the country to begin a new life as the wife of wealthy merchant, Johannes Brandt. But instead of Johannes she’s met by his cold sister Marin - and quickly realises that nothing is as it seems in the Brandt household. When Johannes finally appears he presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a dolls’ house replica of their home. It is to be furnished by an elusive miniaturist, whose tiny creations mirror what is happening within the house in unexpected ways and seem to be predicting and unravelling the future with unsettling accuracy. As Nella begins to uncover its secrets and those of the Brandt household she realizes the escalating dangers that await them all. Does the miniaturist hold their fate in her hands? And will she be the key to their salvation or the architect of their downfall? Starring Anya Taylor Joy as Nella, Romola Garai as Marin, Alex Hassell as Johannes, Hayley Squires as Cornelia, Paapa Essiedu (pictured) as Otto and Emily Berrington as the Miniaturist/
Reindeer Family & Me
BBC2, 20.00 This Christmas wildlife cameraman Gordon Buchanan is travelling to the frozen north, deep inside the Arctic Circle, to meet the ancient Sami people and the animals they hold so close - reindeer. Known as the Reindeer People, the Sami were traditionally nomadic, relying on their precious animals to help them survive the Arctic’s harsh winters. Gordon stays with a Sami family in Finnish Lapland to experience their unique culture and learn about their special bond with reindeer. Once he has earned the trust of his own reindeer companion, he leaves behind his adopted family and sets off alone into this land of ice and snow. With only his reindeer to guide him, but armed with the knowledge of his hosts, Gordon immerses himself in this frozen wilderness and sets out to witness the natural phenomenon the Sami most revere: the magical northern lights.

Alan Partridge: Why, When, Where, How And Whom?
BBC2, 21.00 It has been a quarter of a century since a littleknown sports reporter was given his own radio chat show by the BBC. Two radio series, five TV series, four specials, two books and one movie later, Alan Partridge has an unrivalled place in the comedy pantheon. To celebrate Alan’s return to his rightful home at the BBC in 2018, this retrospective documentary will look back at his journey from broadcaster caricature to the awardwinning study of complexity and pathos that he has become. We will hear from the man behind the man himself, Steve Coogan, as well as the acclaimed team that created him 25 years ago. That cohort of writers and performers would become some of the most celebrated and distinctive comic voices of their generation: Armando Iannucci, Patrick Marber, Peter Baynham, Rebecca Front, David Schneider and Doon Mackichan. Through interviews and a wealth of never-beforeseen archive footage, including improv sessions, rehearsals and unseen outtakes a light will be shone on the genesis of the character.

Tim Vine Travels Through Time Christmas Special
BBC1, 19.30 Master of the pun Tim Vine journeys back in time to Tudor England in a quest to find a silver lion and bring Christmas to Henry VIII’s court. It’s Christmas time at Tim’s antiques shop, and special celebrity guest Emma Bunton needs Tim’s help. Can he make this antique silver lion as good as new? Thanks to his time-travelling grandfather clock, the answer is always yes! Tim travels back to Tudor England, arriving in the court of Henry VIII just as the Christmas celebrations are getting underway. But finding a silver lion isn’t going to be as easy as it seems: Catherine of Aragon (Sally Phillips) has a new lady in waiting, Anne Boleyn (Emma Bunton), who’s desperate to impress - and save her head - by arranging a fantastic Christmas party for the king. There’s just one problem: no one has RSVP’d! And when Tim meets the King he’s mistaken for the new court jester and immediately put in charge of the entertainment. Looks like the search for a new silver lion will have to wait… Can Tim step up to the plate as the new court jester and pull off a party fit for a king? Can he find the silver lion and get back to his shop before Christmas? Can he fit any more puns into half an hour?! Only time travel will tell... With celebrity guest cameos, big laughs and more puns than you can shake a stick at, Tim Vine Travels Through Time is a festive treat for the whole family.

Mrs. Brown’s Boys: CSI: Mammy
BBC1, 22:00 When a crimewave hits Finglas, Father Damien and Maria put together a neighbourhood watch scheme which Agnes and Winnie promptly sign up to - but are they really the best people to tackle crime in the area? After Cathy goes on yet another disastrous date, Agnes is determined to put Cathy’s man troubles to rest once and for all.
Sue Perkins and the Chimp Sanctuary
BBC2, 21:00 Animal lover Sue Perkins travels to America to meet a group of newly retired female chimpanzees at Chimp Haven, the US national chimpanzee sanctuary. After a recent change in US law, decades of medical testing on chimpanzees has been brought to an end and cameras follow as Jill, Whitney, Paula-Jean, Tessa, Martha and Ariah settle in to the sanctuary after an 800-mile journey from a laboratory in New Mexico to rural Louisiana. And after seeing undercover footage of conditions in one of the labs Jill once lived, Sue travels to meet a representative from the National Institutes of Health, the government agency responsible for federal chimpanzee testing. She wants to know if they think the medical advances to human health have been worth it, and how the US government defends the conditions in which the animals were kept.

Tom Kerridge’s Lose Weight For Good
06:55.............. Dress to Impress
01:40 ................................ QI
BBC2, 20.00 In a brand new six-part series, Michelin-star chef Tom Kerridge recruits and mentors a group of struggling dieters to prove they can lose weight for good by following his simple but delicious low-calorie recipes. Tom famously lost 12 stone through a combination of a strict diet and exercise, but is now turning his attention to low-calorie cooking to help others. All local residents to Tom’s restaurants, the group of 13 dieters must stick to daily calorie limits and follow recipes and cooking tips designed to help them over 12 weeks. Tom begins with comfort food, with the first recipes including apple and raisin muffins, a generous lasagne without pasta, southern-style chicken with potato salad and a creamy rice pudding. Having lost a significant amount of weight himself, Tom knows exactly what trials, tribulations and temptations lay ahead for the group, and he will mentor them every step of the way. Helping them to take control of what they eat in the hope of turning their lives around, Tom will tap into their different motivations for losing weight and keep the group members focused on achieving their goals. Ozi is a stay-at-home dad who feels isolated from friends and family, turning to the biscuit tin for comfort. Leigh is an army wife and admits to putting her kids first, skipping meals, and then binge eating. Louise, whose partner tragically died in an accident just a week before she gave birth to her first child, ate to console herself and piled on the pounds. Now in her 30s and married with two more children she thinks it’s time to finally break the comfort eating habit. Two weeks into the diet Tom reveals how much weight the group have lost. He expects them to have made a strong start but there are some surprises in store.

BBC1, 21.00 Award-winning crime drama Death in Paradise returns to BBC One for a seventh series. Episode one. DI Jack Mooney and the team are left puzzled when Diane Smith, fiancée of hotel billionaire Philip Marston, is found dead the day before her lavish wedding. All evidence points towards suicide, but Jack is convinced there’s more to this case than meets the eye and turns his attentions to her family to be. With the victim’s room locked from the inside and all suspects in different locations around the hotel, how could any of them have committed murder? Puzzled by a single painted nail on the victim’s hand, Jack is determined to prove foul play, despite the Commissioner insisting on closing the case. With a distinct lack of physical evidence, the team have a tough task on their hands. Meanwhile, Jack discovers a local island delicacy, while his daughter Siobhan has a tough decision to make. Elsewhere, Dwayne finds himself in hot water with former flame Audrey.

Merry Christmas, and a very-stylish New Year to all... hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
IF you are a regular reader of my weekly hair and fashion columns, you will know how I try to relate my ideas and opinions to you. They are never too serious, or meant to dictate how, or what, you wear on yourself, or on your head. Fashion, be it clothing or hair, is meant to be an expression of yourself, picking up ideas from others, and interpreting them how you want to. Never be a fashion victim, or follow the crowd, is my philosophy on everything. You should want to look and feel your best, most of the time. Having someone to guide you is great to pick up ideas, but you should also be inspired by your own sense of style. Karl Lagerfield once said: “If it’s in fashion, then it’s out”. You should be your own fashionista, and not be sheep-like, copying those around you. Your hair should be the crown you never take off. Adding that final touch to your look, your clothing should tell the world who you are, and the statement you want to make. Fashion changes so rapidly. Timeless pieces are better then hi-fashion that’s out of fashion in six
months. Choose your clothing as a “capsule collection”; pieces that blend together, giving you a morevaried wardrobe, without constantly buying new items. It’s never a good idea to impulse-buy an item. Think of what you’re wearing it with, from bag to shoes, and all that’s between. The same goes for your hairstyle. Simple, easy-to -achieve -athome haircuts look so much better than: “I’ve just walked out of a salon”, but which you can’t recreate at home. Your fashion
is your expression of who you are; it’s what you want to say to the world. So, take 2018 by the horns, and rethink your look. If it’s working for you, then fine. If not, I will be offering a new, top-to-toe, imagemakeover service that will include hair makeovers and personal fashion shopping, for men and women. If this sounds like the service that you could use, then contact me on 922 789058, or at ROBOT HAIR on Facebook. Finally, thank you for reading my columns, and giving me such good feed-back during 2017. Merry Christmas, and a verystylish New Year, to you all … CARL

This is to comply with EU rulings, and will also allow the ITV certificate to be used in other European countries, Until now, it was not permitted, because it did not meet EU standards. The number of ITV stations in the Canaries has doubled to 30 over the last four years, which has allowed more choice, and shorter waiting times.

Kostas adds new bounce
Cup consolation in defeat Sevilla 1 Egatesa Granadilla 0 DESPITE ending the year with this defeat, Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife can look back on another 12 months of progress.
GREEK coach Fotios Katsikaris knew just the man to turn to when Iberostar Tenerife lost Mateusz Ponitka to injury. Kostas Vasileiadas, a fellowGreek, arrived with a good pedigree, and experience of Spain’s elite Liga Endesa. And he started with Tenerife’s 81-77 home win against Unicaja, and was joint top-scorer with 11 points, matching teammate Mike Tobey. Opening quarters of 2119, and 21-16 laid a solid foundation, before reversals of 17-18, and 22-24. It got even better for Tuesday’s trip to Ludwigsburg to play MHP Reisen in the European Champions League, a
comprehensive 83-62 win, putting Tenerife top of their qualifying group. That man Kostas was again inspirational as the 18-point top-scorer. Roque San Miguel, back from injury, showed no ill-effects as he racked up seven points. Tenerife led all the way after taking the first quarter 2617, and following up with 9-13, 22-15 and 26-17. The new coach is proving a popular addition, and feedback from the players is that they are enjoying their games again, and feeling free to express themselves on the court. And they hope to sign off for the holiday break with another away win in the league, at Fuenlabrada (Madrid) tomorrow (Saturday), to climb up from seventh place.
And they are well-placed in sixth spot to push on in the second half of Spain’s Premier League. It was a game of missed chances for Tenerife, with Maria Jose Perez squandering a couple of
good opportunities. Sevilla took their chance when some defensive uncertainty let Jeni Morilas in for a 75thminute winner. Other results, plus Tenerife’s returns in previous games, mean they have already secured a place in the Copa del Reina (Queen’s Cup) later in the season. The B team have also gained lots of experience, and things look bright for the club’s future.
Football feast of youngsters STIR crazy and down to the hard-centred, left-overs of the choccies? Treat yourself to three days of international Under-12s football at the Antonio Dominguez Stadium in Playa de Las Americas. The La Liga Promises tournament, back in Tenerife South after two years away, features 16 clubs, with their best youngsters, and it’s all free to watch, from Wednesday (27th Dec) to the big final, two days later. And, despite the final going out live on several TV channels, including Gol, it always pulls in 5,000-plus spectators. Barcelona, Villarreal, Espanyol, Real Madrid, Alaves,
Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Paris St German, Juventus, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and Japan’s JEF United will be putting out their seven-player teams in the opening, qualifying round. CD Tenerife and Las Palmas will join the action in a consolation competition, for teams who fall at the first hurdle. The group games are 12
minutes each half, rising to 20 minutes each way for the grand final. Many big names have played in the competition during their formative years, including Gerald Pique, Cesc Fabregas, and Fernando Alonso. It all starts at 10am on Wednesday with PSG v Juventus, followed by games until 12.30pm, and between 4.30-7pm.

CD Tenerife review
TASTELESS ties and novelty socks would be preferable to Tenerife’s pre-Christmas present to their fans, because this defeat brought back all the old problems on to centre stage. What had the team learned from the previous week’s 3-0 home win over Reus? Nothing, apparently. Juan Carlos Real was the latest injured player to miss a game, and it robbed the team of width down the left. Full-backs Raul Camara and Camille were expected to push up and become wingers. But it was a dangerous strategy, especially with Camara being no spring chicken. Gijon are used to gracing the Primera league, and, having just changed coaches, they looked a class side. It didn’t take long for them to puncture the Tenerife bubble. Carmona flighted in a corner after four minutes, and Santos beat Carlos Abad too easily to score. The passing and interplay of Gijon was too good for Tenerife, and Carmona
should have increased the score after a clinical attack, only to skew his shot wide. Longo was left to his own devices, up front for Tenerife. But despite the lack of help, he soldiered on, a neat back-flick coming close to catching the home keeper out. The second home goal arrived after 30 minutes. Carmona should have been picked up by Carlos Ruiz, but he had time to fire a shot into the top of the Tenerife net. Carlos Abad got a touch, but not enough to stop the goal. Carlos Ruiz picked up an injury soon after and limped off, to be replaced by Alberto. Camara then
derline their superiority. The defeat left Tenerife in 12th place, with no away win since August. The January transfer window has to bring new blood to the club, but coach Pep Marti will grab that turkey wish-bone and hope he will be given time to turn things around.
put in a tempting cross just before the break, but it was an easy take for the home keeper. The second half opened with a safe catch for Carlos Abad. Malbasic wasted a decent chance by firing wide at Gijon’s goal, and Luis Perez took over from Camara. Tenerife looked poor, carrying too many passengers. Malbasic and Casadesus offered scant support for Longo, and Bryan Acosta wasted a free-kick from a good position. Tenerife did get the ball in the home net from a Casadesus shot, but the ref ruled Longo offside in what was a tight call. To complete a miserable
Drawing to a close Elio, Elio, Elio, what’s all this? CD Marino 1 Union Puerto 1 AN incident-packed Sunday game saw CD Marino salvage a home point against their Fuerteventura rivals. Jonny put the visitors ahead just before halftime with an audacious, long-dipping shot from the halfway line. Kevin Castro tied the score after 58 minutes, and that’s how it stayed. The home cause wasn’t helped by a nasty injury to Ricky Vaca, following a clash of heads, which left him with a 6cm wound just above an eye. Thankfully, next door’s Hospiten Green Clinic was able to give the Bolivian midfielder a full check-up,
and protect the injured area. There’s nothing like a re-arranged home game, having to be played away, to end the year! Marino’s home clash with Gran Canaria’s Santa Brigida was postponed through incoming storms, a month ago. But last Wednesday’s rearranged date was moved to Ibarra’s El Fraile ground, because work had started on the Estadio Antonio Dominguez for the La Liga Promises tournament. And, after all the frantic activity, it proved to be a quiet affair, the goalless draw keeping Marino in 12th spot as they put their feet up for the festive break.
IS it a bird, is it a plane? No, it’s Elio Doro the elephant, CD Tenerife’s new mascot, but it has left fans bemused and confused. The Santa Cruz home of CD Tenerife is the Heliodoro Stadium, and this has sparked the half-baked name. Maybe fans will take him to heart, but it will be a tough tusk! And some say the designer must be living in an ivory tower, if he thinks it will inspire the club.

They’re Naughty… but nice! AS usual, the handicap system threw up some close-fought games in both the Cup and Plate competitions.
And Naughty Nautas pulled off the shock of the round when they beat The Pub in a close, exciting evening, which ended 4-3 in their favour. But League 2 highfliers Sandy’s were no match for Ourplace Breakaways, who sailed through 5-2, despite some close games. Jim hit a 177 for Legends, who entertained Pas O Nadas B. But Ricardo went one better, and threw a maximum 180 for the Los Abrigos team, who went on to win 4-3.
Boothen visited Emerald Lounge, and the score was true to league form, with quality finishing from the away team seeing them through 5-2. Lady Macs put up a great fight when they welcomed Pas O Nadas A. But Richard’s three maximums, including two on the trot, plus 180s for Andy and Guilty, made short work of the massive points difference. Well done Sade for winning her singles. Marilyn’s A took on the Playboys, and raised their game to go into the next round by the narrowest of margins, 4-3. Sundowners played host to League 1 Phoenix Bar, and, despite having a good start, the contest was

Nutty Nautas entertained The Loch-In’s four-man team, who had to make up nearly 400 on the league’s bottom side. WINNING is always sweeter when it’s against your derby opponents, and Arona Tenerife Sur closed their year by beating 7 Palmas of Gran Canaria 3-1. It was an impressive home victory last Saturday, lifting Arona above their visitors to fourth place in the Spanish Superleague. Arona, who took the first set 29-27, were pegged back 18-25 in the next set. But they powered to glory with another 29-27 set, and a clinching 25-19. The ladies now have a two-week break before starting the second half of the season.
San Silvestre run THERE’S still time to book a place in the San Silvestre Golden Mile run in Las Americas, on New Year’s Eve. It was a big success last year with all age groups and fitness levels, and an excellent way to say goodbye to the old year. The children’s short run is at 3pm, and the adults’ 5km sets off an hour later. There
will be music, medals, and mirth as the runners tackle the course, down Avenida Las Americas and out to the beach promenade. The cut-off date is 28th December and entry is 10 euros for adults, or a charitable contribution for the children. You can sign up at the Los Cristianos sports hall, near the swimming pool complex, from Monday to Friday (9am-10pm), or call 922 792 916.
