5th January - 11th January 2018 Continued from Front The main celebrations take place on the eve of Kings Day, and the three Kings of the Orient, Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar, will fly into Adeje by helicopter this evening (Friday), shortly before 6pm. They will be greeted in the municipal football ground by hundreds of Adeje families, and Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, who will hand them the town’s master key. This key, for one night only, opens the door for their Majesties to the borough’s houses, so gifts may be left. There is a nominal, oneeuro cover charge for entry into the football ground, and, this year, the seating on both sides of the pitch will be open to the public, because, for security reasons, the helicopter won’t be landing in the actual grounds. Tickets are on sale in the Cultural Centre, and at the door of the football ground, and the public are advised to arrive before 5pm. Once their Majesties are in possession of the key, they will rest before joining the parade, which starts at Adeje health centre at 7pm, and makes its way up the Calle Grande to the Plaza de España. The parade is in two parts: the first is “Fantasía”, with steel drums, dancing groups, tumblers, and famous cartoon characters, as well as local performers from Ballet Beanky and Los Angeles. Adeje’s volunteer fire brigade, the Bomberos, will also be on hand, as will postal workers to collect and deliver letters to the Three Kings from the borough’s children. The second part of the parade will be more traditional, with their Majesties accompanied by biblical characters. Councillor Alonso Ferrera said: “This parade is one of the most eagerlyawaited events of the season, bringing together

thousands of people.” When the parade finishes, there will be a traditional
offering at the doors of the Santa Úrsula church. Their majesties will then be in
the Plaza de España, to receive letters and talk to the children. Meanwhile, almost 600 people will be available to ensure the safety and fun of the Three Kings’ parade in Los Cristianos. It’s just as well, because around 25,000 people will be awaiting the royal trio. They will arrive at Los Cristianos port on a 19thCentury, Portuguese schooner, and then head towards their three, special thrones, near the Cultural Centre’s Nativity Scene. There, they will be visited
by young and old alike, bearing special letters and requests. The entire event starts at 8pm, when the kings start passing through the crowds, throwing sweets and greeting everyone with their royal waves. With so many people visiting the area, there will be an information point at the back of the Cultural Centre, which will also be the focal point to find lost children. The list of local Three Kings’ parades is on Page 33 in the What’s On feature.
Three Kings Day? It’s such a drag…
THE DECISION to use a drag queen as one of the Three Kings, along with two women, in Madrid’s traditional 5th January Kings’ Day parade, has, naturally, caused controversy. Traditionalists are heavily against the move, even threatening legal action to overturn the decision, according to reports. In years gone by, the Three Kings were always played by local, male councillors, one of whom would often “blackup” for the event. More recently, however, parades have come under pressure to stop the practice, and Madrid’s leftleaning council has been particularly conscious of recognising diversity. This year, two women and a drag queen are playing Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar. They are Roma Calderón, an actress and cabaret dancer, black hip-hop artist Dnoé Lamiss and drag queen La Prohibida. The latter, who tweeted a picture of Darth Vader, said: “Some protest that
my participation in a children’s party denatures the tradition. But nobody protested when…” But some have taken a more serious stance. “Sometimes, a procession of Kings has to simply be what children expect it to be - a procession of Kings,” said Begona Villacis, a Madrid councillor for centre-right party Ciudadanos. Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, council spokesman for Madrid’s PP, added: “We support Gay Pride and the
rest of those celebrations, but we believe that Kings’ Day should be respected as a religious holiday.” One social-media user wrote: “The inclusion of drag queens in the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos of Vallecas has the purpose of expanding the LGTBI indoctrination that is already done in schools, disrespecting Christians.” But others have defended the decision. Carla Antonelli, a regional parliament member for
the Socialist party, said: “It’s yet another example of the diversity of Madrid. It helps raise the visibility of ‘trans’ and LGTBI.” Paco Perez, leftist leader of Puente de Vallecas Council, added: “It’s not going to be a drag-queen performance. The organisers have been careful with traditions and childhood sensibilities.” One activist simply wrote: #LoveWins on social media. Photo: ORGULLO VALLEKANO

Restore my Government, insists exiled Puigdemont FORMER Catalonia political leader Carles Puigdemont has called on Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to recognise the results of the 21st December election, and restore his Government. “As President, I demand the Spanish Government, and those who support it, restore all they have expropriated from the Catalans without their sayso,” said Puigdemont in Brussels, where he is still in self-imposed exile. “The ballot boxes have spoken, democracy has spoken, and all voters have been able to express themselves. What is Rajoy waiting for, in order to accept the results?” However, Rajoy has dismissed the idea of Puigdemont governing from Belgium as “absurd”, after he fled there on charges of rebellion and sedition. But Rajoy has played his own ace by announcing that the new Catalan parliament will hold its first session on 17th January. In an effort to reinstate a local government in Spain’s financial powerhouse, the PM says a vote to elect a new president must take place within 10 days of
the parliament convening then. But analysts say that move could take months to materialise. In an end-of-year address to the nation, Rajoy said: “I hope that, as soon as possible, we will be able to have a Catalan Government that is open to dialogue and able to relate to all Catalans, and not just half of them.” Secessionists maintained a slim majority in last month’s Catalan election outcome, retaining 70 out of 135 seats. Meanwhile, Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena is
broadening the investigation into the process that led to Catalonia’s Declaration of Independence last October. He will include former First Minister Artur Mas and five others in his additional probe regarding rebellion, sedition and the misuse of public funds, revealed the Supreme Court. Judge Llarena says in a ruling that the six additional suspects were part of the strategic leadership group, which drove the Catalan independence process in the previous parliament.
The ruling also states that they have been “identified as participants in some of the meetings that were supposedly used to come up with, and carry out, the break-up process being investigated”. The five others, all playing a “leading and noteworthy role” in the process, said the Judge, are: Anna Gabriel (CUP), Marta Rovira (ERC), Mireia Boyá (CUP), Marta Pascal (PDeCat) and Neus Lloveras, Chairwoman of the Association of Pro-independence Towns (AMI).
Adeje sustains its investment
WORK on the Calles Uruguay and Paraguay should be completed during the first quarter of 2018, says Adeje’s Municipal Works Department, under Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera. “Under the Strategy Plan for Sustainable Investment, financed 100% by the Council, we are upgrading Costa Adeje to meet the demands of residents and tourists,” said Cllr Carmen Rosa. “These works, as well as those on Calles Panamá and Venezuela, will be part of our overall aim, which is to see the zone as a pioneer in the areas of sustainability in connec-
This same investigation is being carried out into Puigdemont and his entire regional government at the time, as well as several former members of the Catalan Parliament, and Jordi Sánchez and Jordi Cuixart, former chairmen of the Catalan National Assembly and Omnium Cultural, respectively. Several former members of the Catalan Government, including the Deputy First Minister and leader of Republican Catalan Left, Oriol Junqueras, as well as Sánchez and Cuixart, remain on remand in prison. Former Catalan Police (Mossos) chief Josep Lluis Trapero, and another Mossos officer, are being investigated for their roles in the independence process, at the National High Court in Madrid.
New beach death
THE first, known 2018 drowning in Tenerife occurred on Tuesday afternoon at a Granadilla beach, visited frequently by families taking their dogs for a walk. The tragedy happened at around 1.50pm, according to the Canarian Emergency Services, who were alerted about a man struggling in the water. An ambulance was dispatched immediately, but, on arrival, the emergency team could only confirm his death.

tivity and accessibility.” The renovations, costing around 500,000 euros, will introduce new pavements along the streets, the removal of any barriers for wheelchair users, as well
as other changes to make mobility easier along these roads. Street-lighting is to be improved, thanks to energyefficient bulbs, along with new, ecologically-improved
rubbish islands, along with underground containers in adjacent zones. New drainage will also be installed, with seating and better signage along the relevant streets.
The Canarian Emergency Services were told, just before 9.30pm on Wednesday, that the 19-year-old needed urgent attention. An ambulance crew arrived swiftly and began treating the victim, whose condition was critical. Once stabilised, she was transferred to hospital for further observation. Local Police are looking into the incident.

Siam Park claims its best year yet THE Canary Islands have created a record, as far as the number of annual visitors are concerned, and Siam Park is following the same pattern!
In 2017, the Park registered a new attendance record of more than 1.2 million visitors, both Canaries’ residents and travellers from all over the globe. It was a mighty 20% growth on last year’s figures, and means that more than 7.3 million visitors have enjoyed the water park since its 2008 opening. In 2016, Siam Park had the fifth-highest attendance among the top-10 water parks in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. That same year, the park reached its first one million total of visitors, having seen a 15.6% growth against the 2015 figures. Thus, Siam Park has again reinforced its position as the top leisure option in the Canary Islands, on a regional and international level. In addition to its
latest record, the park was also named Best Water Park in the World in 2017 by TripAdvisor for the fourth consecutive year, as well as best water park in Europe (through obtaining the European Star Award six years
running). Looking ahead, 2018 promises to be a big year for Siam Park, because it will be celebrating its 10th anniversary, with new attractions and surprises for visitors of all ages. Siam Park has taken
into consideration all the suggestions received, especially from families, and it will continue to develop new projects to ensure that everyone can savour the best experience possible in this authentic Water Kingdom.

Most drownings were in the Canary Islands
ALMOST 500 people drowned in Spain in 2017, and the Canary Islands topped the tragic list with 93 deaths, followed by Andalucia’s 74. The National Lifeguard Federation reveals that 481 bathers lost their lives in Spanish seas, which was a 10% rise on the 2016 total. And a further 2,487 swimmers were rescued after getting into trouble. The figures do not include those migrants who died off the coast of Spain. They focus, instead, on incidents that took place on beaches, lakes and in swimming pools across mainland Spain, as well as in the Canary and Balearic Islands. Most drownings occurred during the summer season’s peak months of July and August, with Valencia recording 67 fatalities, Galicia 58, Catalunya 44 and the Balearics 28. Some 80% of those who died were male, 73% were Spanish and 71.9% were over 35. More than half the drownings occurred at a beach (52%), and 90% of them with no lifeguard present.

Wing-walker’s bid to leave plane fails
5th January - 11th January 2018
Airport’s smart passport booths TENERIFE South airport is using a new passport-control system, beamed at people travelling from the European community.
A RYANAIR passenger was arrested after opening a plane’s emergency exit and climbing on to the wing, in a bold attempt to get off. The London-to-Spain flight had landed at Malaga Airport, but passengers had been kept waiting to disembark for around 30 minutes, when the passenger decided to escape. Footage of the incident, shared thousands of times online, appears to show the 57-year-old man preparing to jump off the plane’s wing with a bag in his hand. He was eventually talked out of jumping by ground staff and climbed back inside the plane, Malaga Hoy reported. The incident led to a further 40-minute delay for everyone onboard. Fernando del Valle Villalobos, who captured the incident on camera, wrote on Facebook: “After leaving London an hour late to arrive in Malaga, and be left in the plane for another 30 minutes (without any explanation from Ryanair)… this man decided not to wait any longer. He activated the emergency exit saying, ‘I’m going via the wing’. Surreal!” The man, held by airport security before being arrested by Local Police, now faces action by Spanish authorities.
It is called an ABC (automatic border control) and consists of booths, in which the passengers place passports/ID cards on to a screen. Then, by using the information on each document, comparisons are made with fingerprints and facial recognition within seconds. So far, there are 12 booths, distributed across both floors at the arrivals’ terminal. They are monitored by the National Police, who are ready and waiting with their own devices, which spot defects on documents instantly; for example, if the travel documents are out of date, or if they have been tampered with. The technology also enables
the police to be aware of any outstanding International Arrest Warrants. Minors and older travellers, and those with reduced mobility, people, are excluded from using the
booths. Instead, several security staff are in charge of filtering the flow of passengers arriving at the airport. Tenerife South is expecting more booths, while those
with similar characteristics have been implemented in airports across Spain. And Gran Canaria Airport will also have access to this technology… with more modern versions!
Catalan upheaval leaves Spain 1bn euros lighter LUIS de Guindos, Spain’s Economy Minister, has calculated that the Catalan crisis, yet to be resolved, has already cost the country one billion euros. He told Spanish radio that a slowdown in the region’s growth, following its illegal independence referendum, has devastated the country’s economy. “Catalonia used to have growth above that of Spain, and was one of the drivers of the Spanish economy,” said De Guindos, adding that the region had become a “burden” on the country.
He blamed the previous Catalan Government for generating “enormous uncertainty, concern and a loss of confidence”, and said that growth had been reduced from 0.9% to 0.4% in the last quarter. The estimate, that the crisis
has “easily” cost 1bn euros, with more to come, is the highest yet. And, according to reports, more than 3,000 companies have moved their headquarters out of the region as a result of the ongoing furore. The Spanish Government
dissolved the regional parliament and called snap elections after an unauthorised Catalan independence referendum. Various politicians were arrested, and some, including former President Carles Puigdemont, fled to Belgium. But last month’s election failed to provide a decisive result, with separatists retaining a slim majority in parliament, and unable to gain over 50% of the votes. Ines Arrimadas’ pro-unity party Ciudadanos took most seats, but a new government has yet to be formed, and Puigdemont, keen to continue, is still in exile.

Jug’s last stroke for seven years! A BRITON, who arrived in Gibraltar dripping wet and saying he’d swum from Spain to hand himself in, received a seven-year prison sentence on drugtrafficking charges. Jason “Jugs” Waterman, from Watford, Herts, was wanted in connection with an incident at Bagby airfield, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, in October 2015. The 33-year-old, whose nicknames also include “Jumbo” because of his distinct ears, was on board an aircraft which had been flown into the Gibraltar airfield carrying some seven kilos of cocaine, worth an estimated 1.3 million euros.
As Border Force officers arrived on the scene to carry out checks on the plane, Waterman dashed off, leaving a suitcase full of the drugs in a nearby hedgerow, and fled to Spain. But after more than 18 months on the run, he eventually handed himself in to the Gibraltarian authorities in June, when he saw his picture featured on BBC TV’s Crimewatch.
The Brit was also carrying a bag of wet clothes when he appeared in Gibraltar, claiming he had swum over from Spain, rather than crossing the land border. Waterman, later extradited to the UK to face drug-importation charges, was sentenced to seven years and two months in prison. Brian Shaw, the National Crime Agency’s North East operations manager, said: “It might sound like a cushy number, sitting around watching Crimewatch Roadshow on a Monday morning, but life as a fugitive is hard and stressful. “To everyone else feeling the stress of being on the run, I would say we are patient people. We keep the pressure on, and we never stop looking for you.”
Migrant figure triples
NEARLY 21,500 migrants, mostly Algerians and Moroccans, have crossed the strait of Gibraltar in 2017, leaving Spanish authorities struggling to keep up with the numbers. They have more than tripled last year’s figures, with migrants employing desperate escape methods, including jet-skis, inflatables and dinghies, says the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). Last year, just 6,046 migrants made the crossing, but the treacherous journey has also meant the number of people who died has gone up to 223, which is more than double the 2016 figure. Carlos Arce, from the Human Rights Association of Andalucia, said: “The increase from Algeria is down to the economic situation in the country, which has deteriorated in the last three years following a drop in the price of oil.” He added that civil unrest was believed to be behind the rise in arrivals from Morocco. Yet despite the high total of migrants flooding into Spain, there has been a decrease in arrivals to Italy and Greece, once the main entry points into Europe. “But the year’s tally is still devastating,” said a spokesman for the Spanish Commission for Refugees.
Chocolate to melt away from tomorrow’s world CHOCOLATE could be a thing of the past, if climate change continues on its current course, according to research scientists. A group from the University of California believe the cocoa plant is scheduled to disappear as early as 2050, because of warmer, more arid, conditions. Chocoholics will be horrified by the dastardly news, but the scientists have teamed up with chocolate giants Mars to save the crop. They are using new, geneediting technology called CRISPR, which aims to create more climateresistant varieties of the cocoa plant.

NEWS IN BRIEF Mummies’ big showcase
MUMMIES from all over the world can now be seen for the first time in the Canary Islands, at Tenerife’s Santa Cruz Museum of Man and Nature. The exposition will be on show for the first six months of the year, and you can learn more about our ancestors, how they lived their daily lives… and what they thought about the afterlife. Various objects relating to burials will be on display, such as amulets, sculptures, vases, urns and funeral textiles. Tenerife has a fascinating history with its own Guanche Mummies, which are on display at the museum every day.
Nasty cops slapped down
A SPANISH National Police officer was identified after being filmed striking a woman to the ground during a street argument. A six-second video, circulating on social media, shows the cop slapping the woman on the face before she falls over. A second officer stands alongside, watching impassively. The incident happened in Orriols, a district in the north of Valencia, and both officers are now facing disciplinary action after police chiefs identified them from the grainy video.
Fake bubbly goes pop
NEARLY 20,000 bottles of fake French champagne have been seized by the National Police, following several operations into wiping out the sale of fake bubbly in Andalucia. The gang running the scam are accused of attempting to sell the fake champagne in A Coruña, Malaga and Ourense. And one person has been arrested in A Coruña, on suspicion of being the gang-leader. A further 8,000 “harmful” and “unhealthy” toys were also seized in an Andalucian factory in Jaén, after another raid.
Blaze hits homeless man
A MAN was seriously injured after a fire swept through a coach in which he was sleeping rough. The bus was gutted in the Lorca (Murcia) blaze, in southern Spain. Firefighters rescued the homeless victim and extinguished the flames, which had spread to an adjoining bus. He was rushed to the nearby Rafael Méndez hospital, and was said to be in a “serious” condition.
Avocado thieves cash in
Today, the plant can grow in a narrow strip only, just below the equator. And as for the world’s chocolate
supply, more than half comes from two West African countries: Ivory Coast and Ghana.
AVOCADO growers in Axarquia, Malaga, are hiring security guards to deter thieves from helping themselves. The move comes after a number of growers reported thefts in their fields, blaming high prices for the disappearing fruit. One grower, Francisco Torre, contacted a security guard after 1,000kgs of fruit had been stolen from his plot of land, which, he says, “have a value of around 2,500 euros”. Avocado prices have rocketed from a surging, global demand, as well as reduced harvests from major producers in Mexico, Peru and California.

Guardia Civil bikes get a full make-over
New-look Guardia bikes Photo: BMW Motorrad
GUARDIA Civil traffic motorbikes have been given a total facelift, including fluorescent yellow in their colour scheme. The transformation complies with European Union rules on visibility, and riders will benefit from comfort, safety, power and speed. Until now, Guardia officers on the mainland, and in the Canaries, rode BMW R850 RT bikes, in white and dark green, the latter matching the colour of their uniforms. But on Boxing Day, a fleet of 291 new BMW R1200 RT bikes, with reflective bands, were delivered to the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). They each cost 19,650 euros and include six gears, with a front, double-disc, hydraulic, braking system. Optional features include electronic suspension adjustment, gear-change assistant, LED lights for daytime use, hill-start assist control (HAC) and downhill assist control (DAC). They can be ridden in “rain” or “road” mode, and include an automatic stability control (ASC), along with an on-board BMW computer, to provide information the cops need, according to their circumstances.
Spain on the brink of foreign-tourist record WHEN Spain’s tourism chiefs receive the 2017 visiting figures, they are sure to be celebrating a brand-new high, with the Canary Islands weighing in heavily.
They greeted 4.4 million foreign tourists in November, which was 7.4% up on last year. And though the December figures are not yet available, the 2016 record of 75.3 million was already broken by midNovember. By the end of that month, the annual total of 77.8m foreign tourists had arrived, raising the bar 9.1% higher than in the first 11 months of 2016. So say figures from the Spanish statistics office (INE), and, if

the current December figures match the 3.99m foreign tourists welcomed in Spain in the same 2016 month, the country will close 2017 having entertained more than 80 million foreign tourists. Astonishingly, despite dips in October and November, Catalonia welcomed more tourists in 2017 than it did in 2016. The Canary Islands was Spain’s favourite destination in November with 1.24m foreign tourists, 6.7% more than November 2016, and a figure representing 28.2% of all visitors to Spain in the relative month last year. And, during the course of 2017, including November, the Canary Islands had already welcomed almost 13 million overseas tourists. Catalonia was the second-most-popular
region in November for foreigners, hosting 22.4% of the national total. However, the 986,712 tally was 2.3% lower than in the corresponding 2016 month, and the lowest since 2014. November was the second consecutive month in which there was a fall in numbers, following a 4.67% drop in October, presumably, because of huge tension surrounding the independence referendum. During this period of political instability, Catalonia has welcomed 96,000 fewer foreign tourists than in 2016. Over the course of this year, however, the Catalans have welcomed more tourists than 2016, despite anti-tourist attacks and August attacks by terrorists in
the region, which left 16 dead. In the first 11 months of 2017, there were 18.2m foreign tourists visiting Catalonia, which was 6.06% more than in the same period in 2016, trumping all other regions for overseas tourism. Catalonia had the lowest growth over the year: 6.06% compared with 9.1% in the rest of Spain. The Balearic Islands industry grew slightly more at 6.17%, while growth in Madrid and Valencia was over 15%. Andalusia saw a 9% improvement, and the Canary Islands, 7.9%. Tourists are piling in from all over the world, and the biggest growth areas were the American market, up 31.5% on November 2016 numbers, and the Russian segment, with a 25.7% increase.

No smiles from cheese thieves!
NATIONAL Police have recovered more than 900 items of cheese, sausages and Iberian ham, alongside more than 25,000 euros, from a warehouse in Madrid.
Officers found the food in the Humanes-based warehouse, stolen, allegedly, from a company in Griñon. At the time, the warehouse owners reported that goods worth more than 350,000 euros had been pinched. As well as the food, the cash was also recovered, alongside other food products, said to be linked to further thefts from companies in Zamora and Toledo. A Spaniard and two men from the Dominican Republic were arrested following the raid.

RYANAIR has again been voted the worst airline in the Which? annual poll… and that will hardly surprise those frequent, expat flyers who live in Spain. Its only consolation is that for customer-satisfaction, it was joint-bottom of the poll, along with Spanish carrier Vueling, both companies scoring 45% in popularity ratings. British Airways, meanwhile, was voted third (52%), despite scrapping its free-food-and-drink scheme on short-haul flights in 2017. But customers demonstrated that cheap prices didn’t have to mean poor service, with Jet2 and Norwegian (76%), in joint-second. Which? Spanish skateboard hero’s major tribute IGNACIO Echeverría, the Spanish hero who fended off terrorists with his skateboard during London’s horrific Borough Market attack last June, will be remembered with an exhibit at the Memorial Center for Victims of Terrorism. Ignacio, 39, was murdered, trying to rescue a woman being stabbed by one of the three terrorists involved. They drove a vehicle into pedestrians, then attacked passers-by with knives on the night of 3rd June. Ignacio saw what was happening, and took on a terrorist with his skateboard, only to be stabbed to death. As a tribute to his valiant efforts, the Memorial Center, under construction in the Bank of Spain’s old Northern Spain headquarters, in VitoriaGasteiz, will put the skateboard on permanent display. Once finished, the huge exhibition space will be divided into four sections. One will focus on the history of terrorism in Spain and the world, another on different terrorist organisations and how they
target and stigmatise their victims, and a third on the political, legal and citizen response to terrorism. The last section will display testimonies from the victims, and the museum will also have an archive and library, along with a research room. In an interview with the Foundation of Victims of Terror magazine, Ignacio’s parents, Joaquín and Ana Miralles de Imperial, said they donated the skateboard because “it is a
positive thing to spread this example to children and young people. It is worth being good, even if you die because of it.” Ignacio’s sad but proud parents told the magazine how he and two of his friends intervened to try to save a woman’s life. “A few metres away, they saw a kind of brawl, and a police officer who had fallen to the floor. Ignacio ran forward and began hitting the terrorists with his skateboard, but they surrounded him and stabbed him in the back twice. One wound was superficial, but the other was fatal.” Ignacio was one of eight people killed in the terrorist attack. The policeman survived, but the woman he was trying to protect was also among the victims. Despite the tragic event, his parents insist: “This was the spirit of Ignacio. We can’t let them defeat us; we have to go on.” Their son has also been honoured by British Prime Minister Theresa May, and also in a series of commemorative cartoons.
Killer cancer strikes daughter of Franco THE only child of Spanish dictator General Franco has died from terminal cancer, at the age of 91. Carmen, pictured, was used as the face of fascist catholic youth in Spain by her father, while the Third Reich even profiled her in their propaganda bulletins. But Carmen, born in Oviedo in 1926, is said to have had a lonely, secluded upbringing. In 1950, she married a neuro-surgeon, who had aristocratic ties, and they both acted as Franco’s foreign ambassadors, and bore him seven grandchildren. Despite her father’s 1975 death, and Spain’s
transition into democracy, her family were able to hold on to most of their assets and property. She was awarded the title of Duchess of Franco with Spain’s Greatness by King Juan Carlos, the newlyreinstated monarch at the time. And the title maintained her place in Spanish aristocracy. She went on to chair the National Francisco Franco Foundation (FNFF), dedicated to promoting the fascist dictator’s legacy. And Carmen occupied the position proudly until her death. Tragically, though, for the country, her father is believed to have been responsible for the deaths of 300,000 people during his reign.

Prescription drugs to be cheaper now
THE cost of 1,253 prescription drugs in Spain and the Canary Islands were reduced on 1st January, and a further 327 hospital-dispensed medicines will also cost less now. But some 80% of the drugs are under different brand names of 10 active ingredients, according to the General Council of the Official College of Pharmacists. These include Salbutamol, used to treat asthma. The medication was taken by Vuelta a España and Tour de France winner Chris Froome, which, to his dismay, has led to a failed drug test. The verdict is under appeal because he maintains he took the correct dosage. The anti-depressant Mirtazapine, a version which creates a calming and appetite-enhancing effect, is also used to treat anxiety and is on the list, as is Azithromycin Chondroitin Sulfate, which is
taken to ease the effects of arthritis. The contraceptive Ethinylestradiol, also known as Levonorgestrel, is among the cheaper drugs, along with two medications for arterial hypertension: Candesartan-Hydrochlorothiazide, also used for treating water retention in patients with congestive heart failure, liver cirrhosis or kidney disorders, and Olmesartan Medoxomil, for treating high blood pressure. Also included on the list is the immune-system suppressant Methotrexate, used for cancer, ectopic pregnancy, rheumatoid arthritis and auto-immune diseases; Latanoprost, often sold as Xalatan, which treats glaucoma; and Insulin Glargine, for diabetics. From New Year’s Day, any of these drugs already in stock should have been sold at the new prices, with pharmacies bearing the extra cost.
No wonder tourists are left glassy-eyed!
THE longest glass bridge in the world, with a transparent walkway measuring an astonishing 1,601ft, opened in China on Christmas Eve.
What could prove stomachchurning is that it has been designed to “sway a little” when people walk across it. And it is 191ft longer than the previous record-holder, also constructed in China. With the 6.5ft-wide walkway hanging 755ft above the ground, between two cliffs in the Hongyagu Scenic Area in Hebei province, it really will challenge daredevils, and especially people with a fear of heights.
The Hongyagu bridge could support a maximum of 2,000 people. But, for safety’s sake, the management allows just 500 at a time to stand on it. Last year, a glass-bottomed bridge in Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon was forced to close just 13 days after being opened, because it was overwhelmed by tourists. Thousands of people had flocked to stand on the 984-foot-high structure every day, causing safety concerns. And, in 2015, a group of Chinese tourists were left screaming in terror on the side of a 3,540ft cliff in Henan, central China, after a glass pane on a new, transparent walkway suddenly shattered.
But glass-bottomed bridges have been built all across the country, which isn’t surprising because they are hugely popular in China, Just one day before Hongyagu Scenic Area opened, a glass-bottomed bridge, at another scenic spot in eastern China, was launched as the country’s first transparent walkway, with special effects, some of which are truly frightening. The 1,272-ft bridge, on the lush mountains of Wuhu, Anhui Province, appears to shatter when tourists stand on the glass panels. In addition, two dragon statues on top of the 590fthigh bridge produce smoke, which, seemingly, makes the mythological creatures fly through the clouds.

Salvador claims his just rewards By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
AT the end of 2017, Salvador, my client and friend, received his best gift ever, granted by the Constitutional Court in Madrid. The case started at the end of 2016, when I advised him not to lose expectations but to try the hard, and almost unreachable, admission of claim before this Court (“recurso de amparo”). Salvador is the perfect example of one who never gives up, which is why he followed my advice. The story began in 2004 when Salvador, through one of his companies, acquired a rustic farm of some 20 hectares in Valle San Lorenzo, full of orchards, buildings, fruit trees and a water reservoir, etc. In 2009, he mortgaged the property as a non-debtor mortgagor, which means guaranteeing the mortgage loan of a third party (mortgagor) for his property. But as a result of the debtor’s non-payment of
loan instalments, the bank started the corresponding foreclosure in April 2012 against the debtor, and against the non-debtor mortgagor, Salvador, before the First Instance Court of Arona competent. During this stage, Salvador asked his bank (CajaCanarias, now Caixabank) repeatedly, on more than six occasions, whether his farm would be affected by the foreclosure against the debtor. He was always told he had nothing to worry about, because, with the auction sale of the debtor’s villa, all the credit would be covered, and that there would be no execution on the farm land. In November 2014, the auction was held without bidders, and ended with the bank being awarding both properties, by means of the Decree of January 2016. Miraculously, my client took notice of the adjudication by Buildingcenter (real estate subsidiary of Caixabank) at the beginning of September 2016, so he contacted me. I appeared in Court to contest the foreclosure, and asked for nullification of the proceeding, up to the moment in which he should had been notified. At the beginning of December that year, the First Instance Court dismissed the nullity requested and demanded
that Salvador pay the costs of the nullity proceedings. There was no possibility to appeal it before Tenerife High Court or Madrid Supreme Court, and all the legal ways were closed, except for the Constitutional Court. I had left this gate open, just in case the nullification was not accepted, and, at the end of December 2016, we appealed to the Court for violation of the constitutional right of defence, knowing that just 1% of the “amparo” appeals filed there were admitted for processing. In fact, the Constitutional Court denied access to 99% of the amparo appeals filed in 2016. These occurred, either because of insufficient justification (39.15%), through the lack of justification (16%), or
because of the non-existence of “special constitutional importance”. And, having convinced the Constitutional Court of the “special constitutional importance”, we acceded to the admission of processing the constitutional “amparo” appeal, plus the precautionary measure of registration of the claim at the Land Registry, in April 2017. Last November, 11 months after the amparo claim was filed, the Constitutional Court upheld our claim. It meant that the property should, eventually, have been returned to the estate of the non-debtor mortgagor (my client). But, despite the Court’s positive result, Salvador still had to face opposition to the process, requesting the
nullity of the abusive clauses (floor clause, early-expiration clause, etc). However, taking into account that the property was sold, originally, for 234,000 euros, and that its appraised value in 2009, for auction purposes, was 264,000 euros, the farm is now valued at over two million euros. A relieved Salvador can now pay the guaranteed debt and continue to enjoy the property’s fruit trees. Mariano E. Zunino Siri is a registered lawyer at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. New Year, financial-planning review
By Paul Montague
Partner, blevins Franks
AS we start a new year, we tend to reflect on the previous 12 months, and look ahead to what the coming year may bring. It is a good time to reflect on your financial planning, and ensure it is up-to-date and designed to protect your long-term wealth, for you and your family. Preparing for Brexit The biggest, current concern for many British expatriates is Brexit uncertainty. Reassuringly, 2017 ended with news that residency rights and benefits will be
maintained for Britons resident in the EU before Brexit. So if you already have permanent residence status in Spain, your right to remain is secure, and you can continue receiving the same access to healthcare and other benefits as you do today. But if you are planning to move to the Canary Isles in the future, or have not yet registered as tax resident, the clock is ticking. Consider securing permanent residency before the Brexit cut-off date, scheduled for March 2019, as it is unclear what the rules will be beyond this. Tax planning It is always a good idea to review your tax planning from time to time, to confirm it is up-to-date. Take advice, to ensure you are taking advantage of the tax-planning opportunities available in Spain. The new, global, automatic, exchange - of-information
regime, implemented through the Common Reporting Standard, is well underway. Cross-border tax planning is complex, especially if you earn income in one country and live in another. Are you sure you are paying tax in the right place? Specialist advice can give you peace of mind, as well as potentially save you tax. Savings and investments In November 2017, the UK interest rate increased for the first time in over ten years, just back to 0.5% from 0.25%. Has your bank increased your savings rate? Keeping too much of your retirement savings in cash can be risky, if you are not earning enough to keep pace with inflation. Successful investing is about managing risk versus return, and having a well-thought-out strategy, based on your personal circumstances, time horizon, needs, aims and risk tolerance.
Ensure you have adequate diversification, so you are not over-exposed to any given asset type, country, sector or company. Pensions There are more choices than ever for your UK pension funds, but this means that great care must be taken to ensure you make the right decision for your objectives, and to protect your retirement savings. Weigh up all your options, as well as the tax implications in Spain and the UK, to establish the best course of action for you. Estate planning It is important to review your estate planning after moving to Spain. How much succession and gift tax your heirs will pay depends on the degree of relationship to you, their pre-existing wealth, the regional rules and whether the local or state rules will apply. There may be steps you can take to lower their tax liability.
Spain imposes forced heirship, which may prevent you dividing your estate as you wish. You can use the EU succession regulation “Brussels IV”, to opt for the succession law of your country of nationality to apply, but must state this in your will. Take advice, to confirm if this is the right option for your family. Blevins Franks has been providing tax and financial-planning advice to expatriates in Spain for decades. We have in-depth knowledge of Spanish taxation, and compliant tax-planning opportunities. We take a holistic approach to tax advice, succession issues, investments and pensions, and specialise in reducing tax on invested capital, pensions, wealth and inheritance. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com

Fighting For Air
Wednesday 10th January, BBC2, 21.00 Imagine if you could change the quality of the air we breathe... in just one day. Air pollution in the UK has been declared a ‘public health emergency’ by a cross-party group of MPs[1] and Dr Xand van Tulleken is seeing what can be done about it. Enlisting the help of enthusiasts and sceptics from the Kings Heath community in Birmingham, Xand stages the first ever largescale experiment of its kind: using people power to try to bring about a quantifiable improvement in air quality for a single day. With the pollution levels on the high street at the cusp of legal limits the odds are stacked against Xand and his team. Can they achieve the improbable? Can the power of communities (with the help of some ingenious tech and some of the best experts in pollution science) succeed where governments have failed? Xand (pictured) also becomes a case study in his own experiment. As he carefully tries to rid his body of the effects of pollution, he measures how his body functions are affected after exposing himself to a typical city street. The results are shocking.

Dating returns to Saturday night as Take Me Out celebrates its 10th series With seven weddings, three babies (and two on the way!) the bar has been set high, as a new line up of Flirty Thirty ladies get ready to meet the single boys braving the Love Lift, all hoping to be whisked away to the sunny isle of Fernando’s. King of Dating, Paddy McGuinness, works his matchmaking magic over seven brand new episodes, and two specials. One features a line-up of thirty fabulous single older ladies looking for love. The second special episode - starring Chloe Sims (The Only Way is Essex) and Claudia Fragapane (Gold Medal Winning gymnast and Strictly Come Dancing semi-finalist) - sees Paddy flip the format for the very first time and ‘bring on the boys’, when thirty of Paddy’s favourite male contestants from previous series return for another chance at finding ‘The One’.

Attenborough And The Sea Dragon c h o i c e BBC1, 20.00
On the Jurassic coast of Britain a remarkable 200 million year-old fossil is discovered - the bones of an Ichthyosaur - a giant sea dragon that ruled the oceans when the dinosaurs ruled the land. In this one-hour special for BBC One, Sir David Attenborough brings a passion project to the screen as he joins the hunt to bring this ancient creature’s story to life. The bones are spotted by experienced fossil hunter Chris Moore, but are trapped high within crumbling cliffs in Dorset. Chris and his team have to dig them out by hand before winter storms arrive; they are so well preserved that the team of scientists are able to use the latest techniques to analyse them - giving us new insights into the lives of these remarkable creatures. This could be a completely new species of ichthyosaur. The extraordinary fossil is covered in preserved skin, which leads to new revelations about how these predators looked. As the story unfolds, David compares the sea dragon to animals alive today, including dolphins, sharks, crocodiles and leatherback turtles. When Chris reveals more of the fossilised bones the investigation takes a surprising twist, as the team realise that they are dealing with a 200 million year-old murder mystery. Through painstaking forensic work they reveal that the sea dragon was most likely attacked by the most fearsome of all the ichthyosaurs of that time - the Temnodontosaurus. Using state of the art imaging technology and cutting edge CGI the team build the skeleton and create the most detailed animation of an Ichthyosaur ever made bringing it to life as well as reconstructing its fate.

School for Stammerers
One-off documentary, School for Stammerers, follows the emotional journey of six individuals as they attempt to achieve the one thing that could change their lives – control of their stammer. A lorry driver, a teacher, a pharmacist, a professional photographer, and two school boys have all agreed to undergo a course that claims it can transform a stammerer’s speech in just four days. The McGuire Programme is an intensive and emotionally-charged residential course run by former stammerers. The course uses physical and psychological techniques and can lead to life-changing results but is not for the fainthearted. Over the four day intensive course, from 7am to 10pm the students can talk to no-one but their coaches. They can have no contact with their loved ones. And within 48 hours they’ll be forced to talk to complete strangers using the techniques they’ve learnt. Bigger public tests follow; they’ll be challenged to speak on a soapbox in Trafalgar Square and, at the end of the course, every student has to stand up and speak in front of their amazed and emotional friends and family.

Release The Hounds ITV2, 21.00
Release the Hounds is back and this time the stars of Emmerdale, Love Island, I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, The Real Housewives of Cheshire and some top Olympic athletes go into to the woods to face their fears and attempt to win cash for charity. Matt Edmondson returns fresh from the Halloween special to preside over the award-winning ITV2, horror game-show from Primal Media which launches in January 2018. In each episode, the teams of three celebrities experience some of the scariest challenges ever shown on TV. As darkness falls the horror intensifies and they’ll encounter mental and physical trials aimed to truly push them to their limits. Finally, they must try and escape with the charity cash but their exit is guarded by a pack of wild hounds. If they outrun the dogs they keep the money. If they get caught… we don’t hear from them again. Episode 1: In the first episode, Love Island stars Chloe Crowhurst, Marcel Somerville and Gabby Allen swap cocktails and sunshine for rat monsters and a pitch-black forest.

Santa Cruz: Festivities start at 5pm at the main Heliodoro football stadium, with a show called “A Very Space Day” in which the inhabitants of the “Fantasy Planet” will arrive on Earth, but, without knowing it, they will land with their ship in Santa Cruz. Afterwards, at 7pm, more than 1,000 extras and 11 floats are accompanying the Kings on the parade, from the stadium to the Plaza de La Candelaria. Puerto De La Cruz: The parade departs from the Castillo de San Felipe at 7pm, travelling through the main streets with 350 people taking part, and finishing at the Plaza Europa. The Kings will be received here by the Children’s Choir of the local British School Tenerife.

New beginnings
hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
IF you’re starting a new fitness regime for the New Year, giving up a vice, or just wanting to revamp your image, then there’s no better place to start than with your hair. If you have stuck with the same style for a while, or your colour is getting you down, then it’s your favourite stylist that you need to see. Changing your wardrobe and lifestyle is all well and good, but it’s your image that speaks before you do. What’s the mirror saying back to you, and how do you feel about your look? That’s what we at Robot Hair specialise
in; hair makeovers, from cut to colour, and all that’s in between. Your stylist should be able to guide you through all aspects of an image change. Your lifestyle and personality should come into the factors that make a makeover a success. Don’t be dragged down with a dated look or unkempt hair; you don’t get a second chance to make a good, first impression.
Consult your salon if you are wanting to change your hair image, and make sure you have confidence in what they are doing, before they start work on your precious locks. Hair shouldn’t be a chore to keep up to, if you have the right combination of salon, stylist and communication. Make 2018 the year you change your hair for the better.
Out with the old! By Carl pattison HAPPY New Year … 2018 has started, and, this Sunday, here in Tenerife, so do the sales. But before you go crazy buying up everything that has been reduced, make space for those new items in your alreadyfull wardrobe. Nearly all of us have an excess of clothes, so go through them carefully, and sift out those that are either too small/big, out of fashion, or looking a little tired. Don’t throw away unless they are unusable;
instead, give to friends, or donate to a charity shop. Both will be very grateful. If you’re going to hit the shops, think before you purchase: “Do I really need
it?” and “is it really a bargain?” A lot of stores hike up the prices in December, then lower them in January. You have to judge whether or not it’s a real bargain. If you wouldn’t have bought it at full price, then it’s not a good buy; stick to genuine purchases. Check all garments for flaws; some stores put back damaged goods, hoping to get rid of them. Make sure your hasty sales trip doesn’t just add to your unworn collection. Happy sales shopping!
THE New Year has significance all over the world, and most cultures are united in that they are saying goodbye to the old year, and welcoming a new one with optimism and hope. While the English tend to enjoy a good party, and then kiss and congratulate each other at the stroke of midnight, the Spanish have moretraditional habits that you may have observed. For example, they will tend to spend the evening of the “old night”, or Nochevieja, eating with family and friends, and may then go to public places to celebrate, just as midnight arrives. They have the tradition of the “lucky grapes”. They will each have 12, (you may have seen small bags of them in the supermarkets), and they will put a grape in their mouths for each striking of the clock. If you can manage to eat, or at least have all 12 grapes in your mouth by the 12th strike, you are sure to have a happy and prosperous New Year! Regardless of where you are, or how you celebrated, everything about New Year is weighted with significance for the future and fresh starts. It is a time of year for resolutions, for being more organised, and deciding to have a better, happier and moreprosperous year ahead. It’s always good to declutter your home, and,
if you have a few days off over the festive period, now is an excellent time to do it. Sort out all paperwork, and file the things you need to keep, shredding or destroying the rest. Declutter your shelves and cupboards, throwing some things away, and taking others to charity shops, so that someone else can benefit from them. Look at your home, and have a think whether there is anything you should be doing there. For example, mattresses should really be changed every 8-10 years as a maximum, and perhaps more frequently if you are renting your property out. A new set of pillows might be in order, as they are hard to keep clean and hygienic. Consider whether you need a new sofa or sofabed. This need not be as expensive as you might think, particularly if you have a good quality one that could be reupholstered to give it a completely fresh look, and a new lease of life. Perhaps you would like to change your colour
35 CW
scheme. Again, this need not cost a fortune, as a coat of paint and a few coloured accessories may give you the dramatic change you are looking for. Curtains can also make a huge difference to rooms. The trend is to move away from heavily-draped fabrics to minimalist flatter designs, giving a fresher and roomier impression. If you do want to make a statement with your window dressings, go for something with a dramatic pattern and/or colour, against more-neutral walls. Whatever your situation, have a good look around and decide what you would like to change. Your surroundings are important, and have a huge impact on how you think and behave. If you want to make a new start, begin by making changes at home, and the rest of the year will follow on a positive note. All the items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, who will come to your home and give advice and design tips, all included in the price of the furniture and fittings.

For the love of of her Captain! SOFI Marcus fell in love with horses at an early age, probably thanks to her big brother, Greg, who started riding at Buzanada’s Centro Hipico del Sur, when he was 10. He got his first horse, Solero, two years later, and his nuisance of a little sister, six years his junior… well, she just wanted to help! Both were born in Hospiten Sur, Las Americas, and attended Costa Adeje International School. And, every evening after school, they would tend to the horse, and help out in the stables. Neither ever complained, because they had both found a true passion for these noble animals. They took part in dressage and show-jumping competitions in the Canaries, and on the Spanish mainland. But Greg outgrew Solero. Three horses later, he went off to university in Madrid to study Aeronautical Business Administration, later qualifying as a pilot. It was Sofi’s big chance. Finally, she had her own horse… an enormous French creature called Farceur du Puits, which had been handed down by Big Bro. She entered a few jumping competitions, but soon found it was simply too big for her.
The stables had brought in some new horses, and she tried out a German grey gelding, Captain Satt. It was love at first ride, and she received Captain, wrapped in a pink bow, as a surprise birthday present. Sofi and Captain formed a superb partnership, and were successful in show-jumping competitions all over Tenerife. But, after five wonderful years, it had to come to an end, as with all good things.
Sofi went up North to La Laguna to study, and Captain Satt was sold and taken out of the stables. But she kept in touch with his new owner, and, on visiting, noticed that his health was deteriorating drastically. She heard from her first riding teacher that Captain’s owner had lost interest, and wasn’t looking after him properly. He was being kept in a garage, without proper exercise or veterinary attention. It was too much for Sofi, who couldn’t hold back the tears. She made enquiries with an Animal Protection Organisation, and sought legal advice about cases of abandonment. Sofi had started working at a hotel as a masseuse in the spa, a 45-minute drive away, and, when she asked her parents for advice, they said: “Do not even think about buying Captain!” She just wouldn’t have the time to be able to care of a fit horse, they told her, let alone one that appeared to be at death’s door. Sofi also listened to boyfriend Humberto’s advice, but he was totally against the idea, as was everyone. So she did what she had always done: she followed her heart, and bought back her beloved Captain! The poor animal was in a
worse condition than anyone expected. He had infected sores all over his body, including his face. But Centro Hipico del Sur became his home again, and Sofi and Humberto took turns to tend to him. They followed the advice of vets and family friend, Miguel, who had a lot of experience in this field, despite many horsemen and women advising Sofi that it would be more humane to have Captain put out of his misery. But Sofi was made of sterner

stuff … and so was Captain! She refused to give up, and she and Humberto nursed him back to health. After more than 12 months of constant attention, having been taken to Centro Hipico Xanadu, Captain and Sofi started to rebuild the relationship they’d had before. He was being ridden daily, and, such was his startling recovery, the pair now appear regularly at Xanadu’s Equestrian Show. The icing on the cake was when Sofi and Humberto were married at Jardines de Franchy, in La Orotava, on 14th October last year. Sofi was advised against involving Captain in the ceremony, and, again, she did exactly what she wanted! Sofi had kept the secret until Beyoncé’s “Halo” announced her arrival, riding Captain Satt alongside the Wedding Garden. Her brother, Greg, helped her down, and handed her over to proud Dad Harvey, who walked her down the aisle with a smile as wide as the Manchester Ship Canal. Sofi’s Mum Sandra, and Auntie Alyson, couldn’t hold back the tears, and even grown men, who knew the Captain Satt story, were reduced to blubbering babies. Sofi had performed a miracle!

Huge charity bonanza! EACH year, the Amigos de Gillian Banks raise money for a day centre in Granadilla, attended by 24 under-privileged children. They help to pay for school uniforms and books, visits to local attractions, and Christmas events and presents, as well as the more-basic needs of the children. Because the centre closes for a week, they start a Christmas food appeal. Last October, the charity brought 30 singers and dancers from the UK, to perform four shows on the island, and, working in partnership with Helping Hands and Live Arico, raised a fantastic 6000 euros. The charity then launched its choristers food-hamper appeal, and began the mission of feeding the 24 children during Christmas week. The youngsters come from all sorts of backgrounds, but their basic needs are not always being met, and this is how the centre and the charity help them. The parents need to feed the children as well as
themselves, whilst the centre is closed, and staff have a well-earned break. On Thursday, 28th December, the charity took them all to Primark in Santa Cruz, and gave each child 15 euros to buy something “new” for Christmas. Being able to chose clothes/ underwear/ novelties, and make decisions with their “own” money, was the cause of much excitement. The following day, the charity
transported 66 “Bags for Life”, full of food, to distribute amongst the families for the festive period. The Mayor of Granadilla and Head of Social Services came and gave their support, as well as centre staff and social workers, and, of course, the children and their families. The appeal gathers momentum each year, and gives great support to the families over
this Christmas period, when schools and centres, which offer that external help, are closed. The look and expressions of gratitude are overwhelming, and the pleasure of giving to these
under-privileged children is very rewarding. Thank you to all who have given or helped; if you would like to get involved, please contact us on Facebook or www. amigosdegillianbanks.com

Grapes can be lethal for kids EXPERTS warned of the dangers of children under five choking, ahead of the great New Year’s Eve tradition involving grapes. It was, they stressed, the third-most-frequent cause of choking. And, according to the Spanish Otorhinolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) and Head and Neck Surgery Society (SEORL-CCC),
the risk of fatalities is even greater when small children consume grapes with pips and skin. The custom on New Year’s Eve is to eat one grape on each of the 12 chimes, as the clock strikes midnight, to mark the start of the year to come. Medics were on alert on New Year’s Eve be-

cause, annually, they deal with more choking incidents than at any other time of year. Nuts and balloons are the top causes of choking, although any type of small fruit is a risk, says the SEORLCCC’s Dr Raimundo Gutiérrez Fonseca. “Given the shape and texture of grapes, they can slip in the child’s throat, unchewed, and obstruct the respiratory system, thus preventing the child from breathing,” he adds. “It is a situation which, if not dealt with quickly, can lead to death.”
Most fatal choking incidents occur in children under two, when their teeth are not developed and the throat and swallowing system is not yet properly formed, leaving the respiratory system to block more easily. In many cases, the child’s coughing fit, resulting from the obstruction, is enough to
clear it. If not, parents should ensure they know how to perform a children’s version of the Heimlich manoeuvre (a technique of abdominal thrusts for removing the blockage), and should contact the emergency services immediately. But prevention is key, and, Dr Gutiérrez Fonseca warns: “Anything that cannot fit inside a toilet roll should not be left within a child’s reach. In fact, children should not be allowed to run, play or speak when they have food, or a
toy, in their mouths.” This advice also includes certain food items, which a small child cannot chew or swallow in the same way as an adult, such as apples, grapes, nuts, popcorn, raw carrots and boiled sweets. And, if the children really enjoy them, these items should be cut small enough to be able to go straight down without chewing, or sliced lengthwise in the case of carrots. Also, pips or seeds should be removed from the appropriate fruit and vegetables.
Pure pineapple kills off those coughs and colds MANY people here in the South seem to have ended up with nasty colds, coughs or both, which probably ruined their festive season. And while most of them will have stuck to their usual tried and tested medicine for a cure, there’s a speedier, purer way of sorting out the problems, without any side-effects. You’d be surprised at how many natural remedies you have at home, and one of these magical, healing ingredients to soothe a persistent cough or sore throat is pineapple juice! In 2010, Indian researchers tested the effectiveness of natural substances, such as
pineapple juice to cure tuberculosis. They found that a mixture of pure pineapple juice with raw honey, pepper and salt worked extremely well to dissolve mucus, and soothe coughs. And those sufferers recovered up to five times quicker with this allnatural pineapple remedy, as opposed to taking regular cough syrup. Pineapple owes its many health benefits to a powerful enzyme called bromelain, which acts as an anti-oxidant to reduce inflammation and swelling of the sinuses. It also eliminates bacteria and fights infections. Just one cup of pure
pineapple juice contains 50% of your daily recommendation of Vitamin C, another powerful antioxidant to strengthen your immune system, and soothe a sore throat or cough. Pineapple is also a good source of Vitamin A, thiamine, riboflavin, Vitamin B-6, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, manganese and potassium, which are all essential nutrients to keep your body healthy. If you have a juicer, it is best to make your own “cure”, or opt for unprocessed, natural pineapple juice instead. That’s because most commercially-available brands contain too much sugar,
as well as added flavours, with little of the actual fruit included. Here’s the ideal formula for killing off those germs and maintaining a healthy outlook throughout the year. And to improve digestion and effectiveness, add a pinch of turmeric. Pineapple cure 1 cup pineapple juice ¼-cup fresh lemon juice 1 piece of ginger (about 3ins) 1 tablespoon raw honey Pinch of salt ½-teaspoon cayenne pepper Blend or juice all ingredients. Take ¼-cup of this remedy up to three times a day and your cough or sore throat will be gone in no time.

‘Serious threat’ to Spain’s 2018 World Cup chances ÁNGEL María Villar, suspended Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President, has warned of a “serious threat” of Spain being barred from the 2018 World Cup through Government meddling, allegedly, in the country’s governing body. In a rare, public appearance, Villar, arrested in July as part of an ongoing operation, targeting corruption in the upper echelons of the sport’s top body in Spain, was keen to distance himself from the FIFA threat, revealed late last week. Yet, technically, Villar still holds the RFEF’s top job. The National Sports
Council (CSD) is the only organisation responsible for the fears that Spain could be left out of the World Cup. Fifa confirmed that it had sent a letter to the RFEF, expressing its concern over a possible lack of independence at the federation. It came after Spain’s National Sports Council (CSD) said that it planned to repeat those elections in May, when Villar was reelected as head of Spanish football’s governing body, over suspicions that least five regional football chiefs had received kick-backs for supporting his bid for the top job. Current RFEF head Juan Luis Larrea informed Fifa of the planned move, designed to draw a line under the Villar era, one marked by murky dealings.

Tenerife 92 Gran Canaria 71
Gran Canaria were sent back home shell-shocked, after Tenerife recorded a 92-71 scoreline in front of a 5,161 crowd at their La Laguna stadium. By the halfway point, Tenerife were flying at 5530, thanks to first quarters of 26-18, and 29-12, achieved without Polish star Mateusz Ponitka, still not quite fit after an injury lay-off. The pace slackened a little in the final quarters with
the fact that Spain could be left out of the World Cup,” said Villar, who presided over a golden football era, as Spain emerged from the wilderness to become European Champions in 2008 and 2012 and, in 2010, win the World Cup. “Fifa is just making sure its rules are being followed,” added Villar, who noted that membership of the organisation was voluntary and authorised by the CSD. But once a country signed up, it had to accept its statutes. To highlight the seriousness of the threat to Spain of being dumped from the World Cup, Villar referred to the case of the 1992 European Cup, won by Denmark. Its national team had failed to qualify, but were let back in after the Yugoslavia team were excluded from the
competition. “There are countries like Italy waiting to jump on any chance to occupy a free spot,” he said. Of the legal proceedings currently under way against him as part of the Operation Soule, Villar said he was innocent. “They have used judges and prosecutors,” said the disgraced football chief. “There are people who want to chop off my head… they are a lynch mob.” His Fifa warning is a clear setback for the Spanish Government, which assumed new elections would be necessary to put an end to the Villar era, and breathe new life back in to the Federation. Sources at CSD have confirmed that Larrea has asked for a meeting with Sports Minister Íñigo Méndez de Vigo to address the issue.

Derby-day delight!
HOW do you close your team’s most successful year in decades? Iberostar Tenerife provided the answer with a resounding win against their local island rivals.
But the response was a clear Fifa warning, because, under its rules, national federations must act independently without third-party advice. The involvement of Spain’s CSD in the election process could breach Article 13 of the FIFA statute, and see all Spanish sides ejected from competitions, which include the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Villar, referring on Monday to the Fifa threat, said: “I categorically deny any action or intervention in relation to the RFEF or Fifa. As you know, I have been suspended and wasn’t able to take any action.” Fifa says that the National Sports Council (CSD) plans to repeat elections for the RFEF top job contravene organisation rules. “The CSD is the only organisation responsible for
18-15, and 19-26 totals, but it was still a bit of a hiding. Davin White led the charge with 23 points, Javi Beiran adding 16 and Mike Tobey 15. That pushes Tenerife up to sixth in Spain’s top league, and it’s a good launch-pad for the second half of the season. It was the perfect response, a few days after Tenerife suffered a rare defeat, away to Madrid’s Fuenlabrada. Without Ponitka, they slipped to a 79-68 loss, despite sterling resistance from New Yorker Mike Tobey, with 24 points, and captain Nico Richotti’s 21. The third quarter was their downfall, the home side winning it 20-14. The other quarters were closer at 1311, 23-21, and 23-22 in the final section.

keep improving this year. Barcelona-born keeper Itziar Martinez, previously with Sevilla, is a 20-year-old of great promise. The other newcomer, Stefania Vatafu, a 24-yearold Romanian midfielder, with great experience in her home league and in the European Champions League, has been playing in America. The ladies are back in action at home in San Isidro this Sunday, against Espanyol at noon.

CD Marino
Marino lose a Prince! AVERAGE is probably the best accolade CD Marino can manage for 2017, with another defeat last Saturday, 2-0 at CD Tenerife B. It means they closed the year in 12th place in their Tercera Division group. A goal in each half meant a deflated trip back down the motorway for them, and the red-card dismissal of Prince for a second booking didn’t help the mood.
The midfielder from Ghana will sit out Sunday’s home game at noon against UD Ibarra. And it’s vital that
Marino kick-start their season, because they won’t want to get dragged into the drop-zone.

Albacete adversary Aridane By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
RUSTINESS, or too much food and drink, cannot excuse CD Tenerife, and coach Pep Marti knows his team must hit the ground running in 2018. Marti must have feared
the worst, after they signed off with a poor 1-1 home draw against Cadiz on 21st December, having been rescued by a lastminute goal. But club President Concepcion was true to his word, and kept his finger off the trigger. With no away win since August, Tenerife face two opening games away, with the pressure on. This Sunday, 7th January, they face Albacete at 3pm, and will come up against former Tenerife forward Aridane. The old-fashioned, English-style, centre-forward won over the Santa Cruz
fans, despite coming from arch-rivals Las Palmas. And he played a big part in dragging Tenerife back up to Spain’s Second Division. When the goals dried up he left for Hong Kong, but Aridane has since returned to the Spanish League with a sprinkling of goals. You can bet he will be keen to demonstrate to Tenerife that he has some juice left in the tank. The January transfer window is now open, and Concepcion has promised three new players to buck up his 11th-placed underachievers. Sooner, rather than later, would be nice!
San Silvestre Run
San Silvestre puts fun in the sun run BEFORE stepping into a New Year, 500 competitors took on the San Silvestre run around the Golden Mile area of Las Americas. Arona Council knew it had a hit on its hands when launching it in 2016. And, again, it attracted a cross-section of experienced runners, guilty festive bingers, and those wanting to test themselves around the Compostela Beach circuit, which started and ended on the popular eating-andshopping zone. The beaches were packed on an afternoon of clear, blue skies. But families, spectators and the curious made sure the circuit was also packed by the time the 4-7 age group started the short-distance, children’s races from 3pm. As the little ones got under way, adults for the main, 5km race were collecting their timing chips, stoking up on energy bars and bananas, and, in many cases, slipping into fancydress outfits. Once they set off, they soon became strung out along the Avenida Las Americas, and back round the beach promenade. The mix of ages and abilities meant that two lanes were passing each other as the laps went on. The winner was Jairo Perez de Luis (No.337), in a time of 16.31mins. Second-placed
Joyce Manuel Medina Plasencia was just 0.04sec behind, and third was Dionisio Guillen Donate (No.196), in 16.48mins.
The race was open to anyone, and several countries were represented. Norway and Finland featured on the racers’ list, but the leading overseas placing was Cameron Robertson, of Metro Aberdeen Running Club, in 18.7mins. “I’m a regular visitor to Tenerife, but this is the first time I have entered a race here,” he said. “I got here a week ago and saw the posters, so I signed up. “It was tough going, and I found breathing in the heat a challenge. But I was very pleased to do as well as I did. Back home our running club has 400 members.”

la Liga Promises
CD Tenerife boys are show-stealers
FINALLY, after two decades of the La Liga Promises Under-12s tournament, Canarian teams were invited to compete on their home soil.
But, cruelly, CD Tenerife and Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas were not asked to take part in the main event, at the Antonio Dominguez stadium, in Las Americas. They had to contest a consolation competition in the smaller, Anexo stadium next door, against early fallers from the main competition, in a bid to fight their way through to a final on the big stage. Defiant Tenerife were not to be denied their big audience, though, after setting out on a glorious adventure, and first up were Italians Roma. The game was played across half of the normalsize artificial pitch, with none of the fuss being dished out next door. But they did have a couple of hundred, eager Tenerife fans spurring them on. Roma were all about patient build-ups and wing-play, and Tenerife’s captain and keeper made some outstanding saves. But the Roma keeper was also kept busy as Tenerife grew in confidence. With no score after two, 12-minute periods, it was decided by a shoot-out of five penalties each. And a great save from Roma’s last kick gave Tenerife victory. It was a similar story in their semi-final clash with Jef United, the plucky, talented, Japanese team. And another goal-less draw meant another shoot-out, shaded by Tenerife to clinch their place in the final. At least they got to play
Tenerife showed how good their football was by testing their opponents. Pablo reduced the arrears, after a poor Milan clearance to earn the biggest cheer of the night. But Milan scored again before the break for a 3-1 lead. It was all Tenerife in the second, 20-minute half. They had a header rebound off a post, and Pablo showed good, close-control before launching a shot, which was well-smothered by the Italian stopper. There was plenty of spirit in the Tenerife team, who never gave up against a physical Roma side. And even in the final minute, they created a couple of good chances. A combination of determined goalkeeping, and a little bad luck, meant they left empty-handed, but what a shining beacon they were for local talent! There was a massive ovation for Tenerife as they left the field, having given a great account of themselves, and proving they deserved to have been included in the main competition. Even the La Liga Promises organisers tweeted their admiration to CD Tenerife, while Spain’s leading sports paper, Marca, made a point of praising Tenerife and their fans.
in the purpose-built, temporary arena, within the main stadium pitch. But Las Palmas lost their games and went home without getting a sniff of the big set-up. So the consolation final
on the big stage was Tenerife v Inter Milan, with live broadcasts on several European channels, instant-replays on a giant screen, and loads of razzmatazz in the build-up, for the thousands watching
both finals. Tenerife were caught cold by Milan, who grabbed a first-minute, headed lead, and were 2-0 up soon after, when a powerful free-kick eluded the keeper. Once they settled, though,
