Holiday drinkers may be facing ban Current laws do not cater for alcohol restrictions at airports, where booze can be consumed outside of licensing hours. But a review by the House of Lords, a year ago, considered ending 24-hour drinking at UK airports. Now, the Home Office is planning “a call for evidence to assess the impact of implementing the Licensing Act on air-side premises on reducing alcohol-related disorder”. If the call is backed up by factual evidence, it could lead to an extension of the Licensing Act 2003, which now covers the sale of alcohol to passengers before they fly off. The Act would give councils the power to license and inspect bars, pubs and restaurants inside airports. And they could also limit the hours during which alcohol is served. The proposal comes after

repeated reports of boozy Brits causing trouble on flights to several holiday hotspots, including Tenerife, and Spain’s Ibiza and Magaluf. Many holidaymaker Brits consume a week’s worth of alcohol before they’ve even landed at their destination, which can lead to disruptive behaviour. Last year alone, says the International Air Transport Association (IATA), there was a 50% rise in the number of passengers who had to be held forcibly for bad behaviour. A spokesperson for Jet2. com, which has already called for a ban on earlymorning drinking, reveals: “The number of incidents where the passenger fails to respect the rules of conduct at an airport, or on board an aircraft, has risen significantly.” And there’s no need to guess why!

Pensioner battered to death in a home

AN inmate at the Santa Rita II residential home in Puerto de la Cruz, aged 73, is believed to have killed his 69-year-old room-mate with massive blows to his body, using crutches. The incident happened about 1am yesterday (Thursday), and, according to sources, the pair had been involved in a huge argument, which escalated into a savage attack on the younger man. His body was found at 7.30am by staff on their rounds, and National Police have started an investigation.

El Mojón hospital gets official seal of approval this year SOUTH Tenerife’s new hospital, El Mojón, will be up and running, fully, before the end of the year, after nearly two decades of speculation and concern. And that’s official! It has overcome so many obstacles since its inception, with stop-start building work, year by year, as well as a protest strike by the current construction company, Sacyr, in late 2016. That was resolved early last year, though, and the old accident-and-emergency department of El Mojón,

in the Chayofa area, is now a real eye-opener, having been transformed into a high-class hospital for everyone. Jordi Esplugas, main spokesman for the hospital and its installations for many years, has confirmed the news in a statement. It will be equipped with five operating theatres and three delivery rooms, along with wards for people receiving special treatments. And Canarian President Fernando Clavijo, after his lengthy visit to the hospital last week, announced that El Mojón would also incorporate a department for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatment, as well as specific wards for pa-

tients undergoing kidney dialysis. Clavijo was accompanied by Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, and José Manuel Baltar, the Canarian Minister of Health, who, between them, assessed the status of the remaining work, necessary to complete the job. They have confirmed that the operating theatres, along with the delivery suites, will be fully operational by October. Everyone is aware that the hospital has been many years in the making. But, when finalised, it will feature state-of-the-art technology, including an MRI scan, which will have huge benefits for early diagnoses.

Tenerife hotels can match world’s best

TEN Tenerife establishments dominate the list of most popular hotels in the world, compiled by the Travel Portal, with five based in Costa Adeje and four in Puerto de la Cruz.

The online site for holiday bookings, mainly in German-speaking countries, rewards hotels annually with the Holiday Check Award, depending on customer feedback. More than 900,000 comments were collected in 2017, from which 705 hotels around the world received the award. Alberto Bernabe, Tenerife

Tourist Board chief, said the awards were in recognition of the quality of our hotels. He added: “We must be very proud to have such a standard, and having these quality establishments contributes to making Tenerife a world destination.” The 10 Tenerife hotels to receive this prestigious

award are the Gigaiga and Riu Garoe, in Puerto de la Cruz; Ambassador Apartments (Puerto de la Cruz); Adrián Hotels Jardines de Nivaria (Costa Adeje); Adrián Hoteles Colón Guanahaní (Costa Adeje); Hotel Botánico ( Puerto de la Cruz); Riu Palace Hotel (Costa Adeje); Adrián Roca Nivaria Hotels (Costa

Adeje); Riu Arecas Hotel (Costa Adeje) and Hotel H10 Conquistador (Las Américas). In addition, the Travel Portal’s Gold Award Holiday Check is given only to hotels who have won awards consecutively for the past five years. And this year’s recipients are Gigaiga and Riu Garoe.

New hotel planned to Spring up in Arona!

Firemen to the rescue SPRING Hotels has announced that they will construct a new hotel in Arona, on 62,000 square metres of land at El Mojon, opposite the Apolo Centre in Los Cristianos. The group is still awaiting its licences, which are expected this year, and is

contemplating an 85-million-euro investment, having already purchased the site. The Spanish group will extend its portfolio with this new 525-room, 4-star hotel. Spring Hotels currently has three 4-star hotels in Arona, with a total of 1,076 rooms. They are divided between the Arona Gran Hotel, Hotel Bitácora, and the recently-renovated Hotel Vulcano, and it is

a 100%-Spanish-owned company. The new hotel will maintain the high standards which have always differentiated the group. And, says General Manager Miguel Villarroya: “Starting a hotel from scratch is a unique opportunity. “It will be a whole new concept, focusing on the demands of the customers, in which technology will play a key role to enhance their experience.”

TENERIFE Fire Brigade were called to bolster a rescue operation on Tuesday, after a man fell from a wall into a deep ravine in the Arico region of Las Aguelillas.

The emergency services were called by the man’s companion, who told them he needed

medical attention, and the local firemen, plus an ambulance, were dispatched straight away. After a careful plan of action, the firemen rescued the injured man, placing him on to a spinal board, and strapping him in safely to support his body. They then carried him to the ambulance, which whisked him off to hospital, after medics had checked his injuries.

T E N E R I F E South airport must have a new terminal this year, if it is to cope with any increase in tourists numbers, warns the Canary Islands Government.

Onán Cruz, its Infrastructure and Transport Deputy Minister, along with Tourism Minister Cristóbal de la Rosa, have called for a budget amendment to allow the popular, Granadilla-deAbona-based airport to be expanded. They say that the two existing terminal buildings are not enough to cope with any, above-average influx of tourists, even if joined together, as the Spanish Government’s airport investment plan includes. Tenerife Reina Sofía, otherwise known as Tenerife South, was built in 1978 and has not been modified significantly since. In fairness, nearly 40 years ago, Tenerife could never have dreamed of the volume of tourism it now welcomes. But now, though, its structure and facilities are “out of date, and do not have the capacity” required of a modern airport in a major holiday hotspot, which receives more than 11 million passengers a year. But, says Cruz, the Airport Regulation Document (DORA)

South Airport in desperate need of new terminal

2017-2021 has hugely under- estimated passenger numbers, which means that funding proposed is “clearly insufficient”. The DORA goes as far, only, as joining the two current terminals together in 2019. But right now, Tenerife South airport is “fit to burst”, even out of season, according to the two ministers. They actually filed a funding request to the

Spanish Government last July, pointing out that, according to forecasts, tourist numbers for the El Hierro island were expected to treble by the year 2030. And that, in response they said, the DORA had included a 900m runway extension. Tenerife is likely to see a similar, or even larger, rise in visitor numbers. Yet the neighbour-

Ryanair bans free hand luggage

RYANAIR will ban passengers from taking hand luggage into a plane’s cabin from Monday (15th Jan), unless they have bought “Priority Boarding”, costing five euros per leg of the journey. The budget airline says the hand-held luggage of passengers who won’t pay the extra must go into the hold, automatically, and free of charge. The company believes this new policy will improve the service and “accelerate the boarding of flights and eliminate delays”.

has also had a runway extension approved,

despite receiving far fewer tourists. Cristóbal de la Rosa says AENA, the airport governing body, needs to start investing seriously in the Canary Islands, given that it is “one of the leading tourist destinations in Europe”. He adds: “Practically everyone who travels to the region goes there by air, and residents themselves can get from one island to another, only by plane.” De La Rosa has also urged the Civil Aviation Authority to restore the La Gomera-Gran Canaria air route, which operated between 2007 and 2009, under the banner of “Public Service Obligation” (OSP). It meant that it was considered to be a necessary facility for the ordinary resident, which should be in place, whether or not it made a profit. For the last eight years, it has only been possible to fly between La Gomera and Gran Canaria, via a connecting flight, with a Tenerife stop making the journey much longer, and less convenient.

NEWS IN BRIEF Economic future is bright

SPAIN’S economy grew by 3.1% in 2017, which was predicted by the Government, and the 2018 forecast is also bright because the Bank of Spain is on the same wavelength. Both predicted that the 2017 domestic demand would contribute 2.6% to gross domestic product (GDP) growth. And they also predicted, correctly, that external demand would contribute 0.5%, and employment would show an increase of 2.9%. As for the future, the Bank expects the country’s economy to grow by 2.4% in 2018, and by 2.1% in 2019 and 2020.

Cruel sea kills woman

A WOMAN died last Sunday after being dragged into the sea by a wave, along with a man, during a keep-fit session in Northern Spain, on the San Juan de Nieva jetty in Castrillon, Asturias. When the emergency services arrived on the scene, the man, who had managed to get himself out of the water, helped their attempt to locate the woman, only to injure himself, as did a local police officer and a firefighter. Emergency CPR was given to the woman for an hour when she was eventually retrieved. But, despite the medics’ efforts, she was pronounced dead.

53-year-old hit by car

A WOMAN aged 53 was seriously injured on Monday night when she was struck by a car. The emergency services were alerted at 8.42pm that she needed urgent medical attention, after being involved in a serious accident on the southbound motorway, in the El Rosarito area. They arrived promptly, stabilised the woman, who had severe facial injuries, and then transferred her to Candeleria hospital. Last Wednesday evening, a 19-year girl suffered serious head injuries in Guia de Isora, after being hit by a car near the bus station. She was treated by ambulance medics, and, once stable, was transferred to hospital for further observation.

Teide Park landslide

A ROAD has been closed to traffic heading in both directions, following a landslide at Teide National Park. The incident happened between the Mines of San Jose and the walking path No.7, situated at the height of Montaña Blanca. For safety reasons, the TF-21 road has been blocked off, and officials are urging patience and caution.

Doctors on alert to tackle flu epidemic JUST one case of flu was recorded in Canary Islands at the back end of 2017, but at least 51 people have so far been registered this year, with 18 in a serious condition. But the virus is spreading, according to the Canaries’ Public Health Department, which warns that as soon as temperatures start to fall across the islands, the extra number of flu victims will spark an epidemic. Public Health officials are asking for people at a higher risk to be vaccinated, including those over 60, with or without previous illnesses.

They also urge vaccination for individuals aged from six months to 59 years, others with clinical conditions, and those who can transmit flu to people with a high risk of complications, along with pregnant women and public-sector civil servants. Influenza caused 28 deaths in the Canaries last year, and 130 serious cases, of which 70 required hospital treatment. The Public Health Department says there is still time to be vaccinated if you have not done so already. Meanwhile, in southern Spain, nearly 450 extra staff have been call in to tackle a flu epidemic, after more than 188 cases per 100,000 inhabitants were recorded in Andalucia in

the last week of 2017, which surpassed the previous year’s 181 total. The region’s average health centre has recorded a 25% increase in emergencies in many health centres and hospitals. And additional workers have been drafted in before the expected peak of flu sufferers in the third and last weeks of this month. Andalucia’s Ministry of Health says the increase in emergencies is up 25%, and the total number of cases is 13.5% higher than last year’s figure. This year’s flu is not lifethreatening, and health professionals advise that you should feel better within a week, and they say that, in most cases, you will not need to see a doctor.

Gatwick ready for a BA boom BRITISH Airways has announced its biggest Gatwick summer schedule in almost 10 years, thanks to the demise of Monarch. The BA company has acquired the lucrative take-off and landing slots left free by Monarch’s fall, giving them more than 150 additional weekly flights this summer. In summer 2017, the airline operated around 1,000 flights a week at its peak, out of Gatwick. Now, weekly flights to Malaga will be boosted from 27 to 35, Alicante from 14 to 22 and Faro from 17 to 21, and the airline’s summer flights to Tenerife will increase

from six to 13. In addition, Madeira will be bolstered from six to nine flights a week, and Lanzarote from three to five. Alex Cruz, the BA chief, said: “We are delighted to be able to further grow our presence at Gatwick, by adding extra frequencies and improving our timetable. “We are also introducing several new destinations to

the Gatwick programme, including Palma (Majorca), Mahon (Menorca) and Gibraltar. “We’ve also increased the number of routes we serve by more than 50%; in 2012, we flew to 48 different destinations, whereas now we serve 74.” He added: “This, undoubtedly, highlights our commitment and focus to growing our Gatwick operation.”

The heavy snow leaves motorists stranded SPAIN’S Government was forced to deploy 250 soldiers on Sunday, to help rescue hundreds of drivers who were trapped overnight in vehicles, as heavy snowfalls cut off several roads. The Army’s UME emergency unit sent two companies of specialists, along with 95 vehicles, to free hundreds of cars stranded on the highway linking Madrid and the north-western city of Segovia. The emergency unit wrote on Twitter: “There are many trapped vehicles on the AP6, but we are working without rest to advance, kilometre by kilometre, to reach everyone as soon as possible. We are on it!” Soldiers and firefighters, who used snowploughs to try to clear the snow, also distributed blankets and hot drinks to motorists. The dreadful weather arrived as many Spaniards travelled home at the end of the festive holidays. Motorists took to social media to complain that they had been trapped on the highway since last Saturday night. Sara Ramos, stranded overnight with her husband and two children, aged two and six, said she had not eaten since lunchtime on Saturday. “Some cars have run out of gas,” she told Spanish public television by telephone. “We are starting to get worried.” By Tuesday, more than 700 snowploughs were said to have been put on standby to keep the roads open, as 12 provinces were put on alert for snow, while other regions were warned to expect freezing temperatures and heavy rain.

It’s San Sebastián time, for people and animals!

Flashback to last year’s celebrations in La Caleta

ADEJE is preparing to pay homage to San Sebastián, one of the borough’s patron saints, in a celebration involving people and their animals, which dates back to the 18th Century. It takes place along La Caleta’s La Enramada beach, next Friday (19th Jan) and Saturday, and those wishing to take part (as riders, etc) must register by today (12th Jan). Events begin from 8pm on Friday with a sung Mass in the La Caleta church, after which the statue of San Sebastian will be carried along in a short parade, accompanied by Adeje’s municipal band, and fireworks. This will be followed by a folk-music festival, and visitors will also be able to view the open-air exhibition of images/photographs of the borough’s San Sebastian tra-

dition. Then, next Saturday at midday, there will be a Mass, sung by the Santa Úrsula parish choir, after which a procession to the beach begins. Those involved will be accompanied by the custom-

ary horses and riders, plus many more animals, as well as thousands of spectators, who will be awaiting them along the beach. On their return to the square, the priest will bless the other animals,

which have been brought to the event. Adeje Council will organise parking throughout the events, designed to leave the main streets free for visitors and residents to enjoy the celebrations, and for better traffic circulation. There will also be designated viewing areas for people with mobility difficulties. Adeje’s San Sebastián statue was commissioned for the borough by Father Eulogio Gutiérrez Estévez (1851-1917), who was Parish Priest there for 17 years. Over the decades, many people have attributed miracles to the statue and the Saint, and many still pray to him for relief from pain and suffering. A story in the 1916 Gazeta de Tenerife relates the celebrations of that year, reporting on local fun, and a procession of over 100 camels and other “beasts of burden” to the beach, accompanied by more than 2,000 members of the public.

THE Feast of Epiphany is, traditionally, Spain’s main festive holiday, when children receive their presents from the Three Kings, rather than from Santa Claus. On “El Día de los Reyes” (6th January), Spain and Latin American countries celebrate the biblical adoration of baby Jesus by the Three Kings, also known as the Three Wise Men, or Magi. In a 2015 survey, Spanish children chose the Three Kings, overwhelmingly, as their favourite gift-giver (67%), rather than Santa

12th January - 18th January 2018

Santa is ousted by gifts galore from royal trio (27%). And why shouldn’t they, because, in effect, it is their Christmas Day? In Spain, “Los Reyes Magos”, - Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar - play a similar role to the one Santa adopts in many other parts of the world. Spanish children write letters to the Three Kings,

Have camels got the hump?

THE Three Kings parade is under scrutiny and has been for the last few years, and last Friday could have been the last sighting of them in the Canary Islands for the 6th January showpiece. Many associations against cruelty towards animals have claimed that the camels used for the Three Kings parades are mistreated and under huge stress. Debates have already started about whether these animals should still be used in this age-old tradition. And there have

been several complaints about the way they are treated during their journeys from one island to another, especially from Lanzorote to Tenerife. The Associations of Animal Rights organisation claim that other animals, such as elephants and donkeys, used for Three Kings parades in various municipalities across Spain, are also a cause for concern. A statement from the group claims that these animals are all under stress, because of several factors, such as noisy crowds, firecrackers and loud music. For this reason, it is urging public administrators to use alternatives, to prevent animal cruelty.

who then bring their gifts the night before, or on the Epiphany morning of 6th January. In some houses, children leave their shoes outside the door so that the Three Kings will fill them with gifts, and often leave bigger presents alongside. Just as children in many other places leave out some food and drink for Santa, and a carrot for Rudolph, Spanish kids make sure to leave a drink for each of the Three Kings, and some food and drink for their camels. That’s because they believe it is the only night of the year when the animals actually eat and drink. The royal trio, featuring hundreds of actors, are huge spectacles all over Spain, and are broadcast live on national television. Every city and sizeable town stages a parade, and one of the biggest, in Madrid, draws crowds of 100,000, including thousands of

children, eager to catch the sweets thrown into the crowd by the Three Kings themselves. And even if the skies are clear, and there is no forecast of rain, children still brandish umbrellas as they line the parade route. The reason becomes clear as the Kings approach. The umbrellas are opened and turned upside down, becoming an ideal receptacle for catching the handfuls of sweets thrown into the crowds. The roles of the Three Kings in the famous parades have, traditionally, been played by city councillors. Because most kings are white, Balthazar has usually been played by a “blacked-up” white man, which has often been branded as racist by critics. In 2016, for the first time ever, Madrid’s left-wing council called time on the controversial tradition,

promising to employ a black actor for the part “to reflect the integration and diversity which, increasingly, characterises Madrid’s community”. Some town councils have even chosen to replace a King in the parade with a Queen, all in the spirit of equality, but causing outrage amongst traditionalists. This year, one parade in Madrid featured two women and a drag queen, to highlight diversity and “bring visibility to the LGBTI community”. Every year, on 6th January, Spaniards usually tuck into a Roscón de Reyes, a Three Kings cake baked in a ring, decorated with candied fruit and hiding a surprise… sometimes lucrative! A small figurine of the baby Jesus, or a little toy for children, is hidden inside the dough, as is a dry fava bean. Whoever finds the toy is crowned king or queen of the celebration, while the one who finds the bean has to buy the Roscón next year. This year, El Corte Inglés, the huge Spanish department store, planted gold ingots inside 251 of the Roscón cakes sold from its premises across the country. And that really would have been a sweet surprise for those finding one in their 6th January slice.

Daughter tries to kill dad in hospital attack

A GERMAN, recovering from an emergency operation in Gran Canaria’s Doctor Negrín University Hospital, in Las Palmas, was attacked by his own daughter. He was recovering in the intensive care unit (ICU) when the incident occurred, during visiting hours. The woman tried to unplug his respiratory machine, but that triggered alarms. She then took off his breathing mask and started to smother him with her

bare hands, covering his mouth and nose. The alarm sent nursing staff racing to the room, only to find the woman doing her utmost to stop her father breathing. As they approached the bedside, the woman lashed out, kicking, punching and screaming while they attempted to reconnect her father’s respiratory machine. They achieved that by pushing the woman aside, and the relieved Canarian Health Service says the patient is now out of the intensive care unit, and is recovering in a ward.

‘Paws’ for thought!

ADEJE’S Department of Health promoters have launched a campaign to increase awareness among pet owners of the need to take responsibility for the actions of their animals in public.

The campaign, “Échame una pata” (Give me a paw) offers a free gift of doggy poop-bags and pee-pee cleaning bottles, for owners who register their four-legged friends on the animal census. “Social harmony in our town has to be respected at all levels,” said Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo. “Some pet owners need to make more of an effort to respect communal zones and public spaces used by us all, making sure dogs are on a lead, and picking up and cleaning after them.” She added: “A society that loves animals is a society that is developing along the right lines, with respect for all forms of life.

“That’s why we, in Adeje, have so many people who do own animals and love them, while respecting others, too. “Unfortunately, there are always a few who don’t take their responsibilities seriously. But owning a pet brings with it duties and obligations.” Leaflets promoting the campaign will be distributed in schools and municipal installations, as well as posters, ads, information on social media, etc. They will encourage people to make sure their pets are on the census and have a microchip, which is mandatory for animals over three months of age.

The Councillor also stressed that it was important for those who might have received a pet as a Christmas or Kings gift, that they are new members of the family, not toys, and must be treated as such. New pets must be also trained, and owners have to be respectful of neighbours, when it comes to cleanliness and noise. The campaign also serves as a reminder to the public that animals are not allowed in public pools, beaches, bathing areas, playgrounds and green zones, at any time of the year.

What a surprise! Dead convict is definitely alive

Asturias Central Penitentiary, where the Lazarus-style prisoner was found to be alive

AN astonishing investigation began after a prisoner was pronounced dead in Spain, incorrectly, and carried out of jail in a body bag for an autopsy. A pathologist, preparing to cut him open for a post-mortem, raised the alarm after hearing the inmate wheezing. The lucky man, named locally as Gonzalo Montoya Jimenez, was, last Sunday night, said to be under police guard in a hospital in the northern Spanish city of Oviedo. Authorities at Asturias Central Penitentiary, in nearby Villabona, have ordered an inquiry to try to get to the bottom of the bizarre gaffe. The alarm was sounded at breakfast time on Sunday, when the inmate was found slumped unconscious on a chair in his cell, after failing to show for a roll-call. He was put in a body bag and taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Oviedo for an autopsy, after being pronounced dead at the scene. And his loved

ones were informed. It is believed that he had felt ill the day before his dramatic “death”... and even more dramatic “resurrection”. A Spanish Prison Service spokeswoman confirmed that the man’s family had been informed of his “passing away” as part of standard procedure, which kicks in when a prisoner has been declared dead. She said: “Two prison doctors concluded that he had clinical signs of death, following a morning roll-call. They informed police, his next-of-kin and a local duty court, as is normal in these cases. “The court sent a forensic doctor, who was the one who actually confirmed his death.” The spokeswoman added: “I can’t comment on what happened at the Institute of Legal Medicine, but three doctors saw clinical signs of death, so it’s still not clear at the moment exactly why this occurred.” Guardia Civil officers, answering to bosses in the northern port city of Gijon, have been tasked with keeping watch on the prisoner

while he is treated in hospital. A Guardia source said: “We got the original call, asking us to attend the jail, because an inmate had died. And we acted according to protocol. “He was taken away for an autopsy without police presence, because, at that point, he was thought to be dead. “The second call, which came in asking for police assistance in taking him to hospital, and keeping watch over him while he was there, for obvious security reasons, certainly came as a bit of a surprise.” A hospital spokesman confirmed that the patient was in intensive care, but said he couldn’t comment on his condition. But a well-placed source said his life was not thought to be in danger, now that he was being treated in the proper place. Relatives, who have been visiting him in hospital, are said to be feeling a combination of relief and indignation. It was not clear how long the inmate had been in prison, or what length of sentence he was serving.

A belly-ache for Spanish Legion TUBBY soldiers in the Spanish Legion have been told to shed weight, amid concerns that their bellies will tarnish the reputation of the elite fighting force. Their low-cut shirts, once the envy of Spain, have now become an embarrassment. And an internal report, drawn up by the Brigade of the Legion’s Central Command (BRILEG), says that as many as 3,000 soldiers must undergo Body Mass Index (BMI) testing. This will be backed up with a diet-and-exercise programme for those found to be too heavy. A healthy BMI, based on height and weight, is considered to be between 18.5 and 24.09 (green). A BMI of 25 to 29.9 (yellow) is considered overweight, while a BMI of 30 or higher (red) is considered obese. The report says: “BRILEG

finds itself immersed in a situation which demands a series of measures to reduce excess weight among its personnel,” and calls for an end to what is described as a “difficult scenario”. It adds: “Without a greater strictness, we will be condemned to the loss of prestige as a combat unit.” The report also blames the high, average age of Brigade soldiers, in addition to “physical deterioration, boredom with the training methods, and a general, social acceptance of excess weight”. Soldiers with a BMI of more than 27 must go on a diet, and those who fail to trim down will face being disciplined. It means they will be banned from military parades and other public commitments, as well as losing bonus payments and being overlooked for overseas operations. If, after a year of diet and exercise, the fatties have still not shed the weight, they could be booted out of the Legion!

Too-handy man accused of card fraud THE Guardia Civil is investigating a 23-yearold man from Icod de los Vinos, who has been accused of bank fraud. An official complaint was made by a customer, who, when checking his bank statement, noticed that withdrawals were made from a cash-point machine, for which he was not responsible. Officers from the Guardia looked into the case and noticed that three sums of money, totalling 1,300 euros, were extracted by card from a local bank. It turned out that the accused man had been doing some odd jobs on the complainant’s house earlier, and had access there after gaining the owner’s trust. He was given the house keys, and was said to have used them to enter the house and steal the bank card. The cash withdrawals were made in Icod de los Vinos, where both he and the victim live. The case is pending local court procedures.

Parents kept their son’s body hidden

Girona, where the tragic family lived

AN American couple, based in Spain, have avoided being imprisoned after living with the body of their dead son at home for more than a month. Bruce and Schrell Darlene Hopkins, 41 and 40, refused to release the body of youngest son, Caleb, to Spanish authorities, several weeks after he died of an asthma attack in their

rented Girona apartment. The couple, arrested after police discovered his body in January 2016, were facing at least three years in jail, amid claims that they were guilty of “homicide with serious imprudence”. But though Girona court agreed that the child had needed the hospital care his parents did not provide, it said there were aggravated circumstances, and fined the couple 990 euros for a crime of “homicide with less-serious imprudence”.

Police, who found the body when visiting the couple’s home, described it as having “a nauseating stench”. According to reports, the family kept a vigil next to his body, wrapped in a sheet, rather than calling the authorities immediately. Caleb is believed to have suffered the fatal asthma attack between the end of November and the beginning of December 2015, though the specific date of his death has not been confirmed.

Hash raid is a smash hit!

NATIONAL Police have seized a whopping three tons of hashish, and arrested four alleged drug-traffickers, at the same time, in La Linea. The quartet were said to have formed a criminal gang, specialising in transporting the drug from Morocco to Spain, via the Gibraltar Strait, and were planning to distribute it to other cities. During the operation, which involved the hashish seizure, police also intercepted two loaded firearms, five vehicles, three of which were stolen, and 2,500 euros in cash, along with 12 mobile phones. Investigations began in mid-September last year, when officers recovered three stolen offroad vehicles that were said to have delivered “bales” of hash from beaches to various areas. Intelligence eventually led officers to a La Linea property in Cádiz, where officers seized the hash, among many other items, and arrested the four gang members believed to be responsible.

LIFE on the north Atlantic coast of São Miguel, in Portugal’s Azores archipelago, is as wild, forgotten and cruel as its location.

The town has few facilities, apart from Wi-Fi. And, when there’s no fishing to be done, youngsters smoke hash and hang out on the cement pier. They are desperate to escape from this scrap of land, in the middle of nowhere, where next to nothing happens. This actually explains how the town was brought to its knees, when, in June 2001, something actually did happen, in the shape of a Sun Kiss 47 yacht, carrying 505,840kgs of 80% pure cocaine, worth around 40 million euros. The sea was rough and the gale-force wind brought down the yacht’s mast. It was impossible for it to slip by the Azores Islands as planned, but it was equally impossible for it to sail into the port, laden with drugs. The crew held a crisis meeting, and agreed to drop some cocaine bales into the sea. The rest would be taken to a cave in the north of the island, close to Rabo de Peixe. And the plan might have worked, but for nature. The bales, at the mercy of a vicious wind, were blown ashore, rapidly. And, as they bobbed ever closer to the pier, news of their arrival ripped through the town, prompting a frenzied treasure hunt. Witnesses say dozens of people, from teenagers to grannies, ventured on to the treacherous quay that night, to fish for the goods. Police confiscated 400kg of cocaine in the first operation of its kind on the archipelago. But the remainder was commandeered by locals, many of whom were poor and uneducated. “The police maintained that the yacht was carrying 500kg only, but that’s absurd,” said Nuno Mendes, a newspaper journalist covering the story. “The boat could carry up to 3,000kgs, and nobody would cross the Atlantic carrying a small percentage of what they could take,

because 100kgs of cocaine, however exquisitely highgrade, doesn’t destroy a generation.” The main object was for the natives to make money quickly, and, consequently, an epidemic of overdoses brought hospitals on the island to the verge of collapse. Local television journalist Teresa Nobrega recalled: “Doctors were coming on TV, begging people to put an end to the madness. There were weeks of panic, terror and mayhem, and no one was prepared for anything like it. In fact, it continues to affect us.” Residents even recall women using cocaine instead of flour to coat their mackerel, and middle-aged men spooning it into their morning coffee. “We never had access to reliable statistics,” says Mendes, who believes there was a cover-up to avoid it becoming international news. “At first, the priority was to stop the madness, but there was a lack of resources and a lack of interest. “In the three weeks

“Doctors were coming on TV, begging people to put an end to the madness. There were weeks of panic, terror and mayhem, and no one was prepared for anything like it.” following the landing, we had 20 deaths and an untold number of overdoses.” The police were working on two fronts simultaneously: confiscating every last gram of cocaine which still remained on the island, and locating the yacht that “delivered” the drugs. After two weeks of exhaustive searches at the port of Ponta Delgada, the island’s capital, police found a small packet, concealed in a yacht moored in the port. It was wrapped in newspaper bearing the same name and date as

the paper in the bales of cocaine, seized days earlier on the beach. The police arrested the only man on the boat, Sicilian Antoni Quinzi, who became vital to the investigation. “When we told him how the island had been turned into a minefield, he gave us key information on the goods hidden in the north,” said João Soares, Chief Police Inspector at the time, who arrested Quinzi. He also organised the hunt for him two weeks later, following one of the most surreal jailbreaks in Portuguese police history.

Ten days after his arrest, Quinzi jumped over the prison wall and headed for freedom on a waiting Vespa. But Soares said: “The island itself is a prison. No one escapes from jail on an island.” Well, Quinzi did, though he was apprehended again a fortnight later, in the northeast of Sao Miguel, carrying 30 grams of cocaine and a fake passport. He was taken to Coimbra prison in Portugal and, later, sentenced to nine years and 10 months. The Sicilian, the only person ever held to account, is still regarded as a legend on the island. “He was very tall and charismatic,” said Catia Beneditti, a lecturer in Italian at the Azores University, who acted as Quinzi’s interpreter during his interrogation and subsequent trial in Ponta Delgada. Today, the purity of cocaine is measured according to the criteria of “el Italiano”, indicating that, 16 years on, the island is still living with the fall-out of that fateful night. “The purity of the cocaine had a catastrophic effect,” said Suzete Frías, former director of the Ponta Delgada health clinic. “The rush was so brutal that people started to use heroin to get to sleep. “Drug-addiction became a huge problem, and, while the children from well-to-do families were sent to rehab clinics on the continent, working-class children sought heroin.” Yet the matter has never attracted much interest because the Azores Islands, some 1,400km west of Lisbon, are out of earshot. And, according to Suzete: “Had the cocaine washed up on the shores of mainland Europe, none of this would have happened.”

Drug-dealer nabbed, after 10 years on run

A NOTORIOUS drug-dealer, in hiding for 10 years, has been snatched by cops after a joint British and Spanish operation. Michael Walsh, 75, was arrested in Malaga, having fled Yorkshire back in 2007, after being convicted of cultivating and supplying cannabis in Scarborough. “As this case shows, some criminals think that because they can’t see us, we can’t see them,” said Paul Somerville, North Yorkshire Police Intelligence Management Officer.

“But in this day and age, few offenders are genuinely untraceable … and they all leave footprints. “By working closely with British and Spanish authorities, we’ve been able to arrest a convicted drug-dealer, who has gone to great lengths to evade justice.” Walsh was jailed for five years and nine months on drugs offences in 2005. But after his December 2007 release, he was soon recalled for breaking the terms of his parole. Instead of handing himself in, though, he fled to Spain, where patient officers have taken until now to track him down.

Apple is feeling crunch

APPLE’S shock admission that it is slowing down phones deliberately has caused the US company a serious headache. The giant tech company has been bombarded with lawsuits across the United States, and Apple executives are facing far more than a potential civil suit in France… they are facing prison! In August 2015, France passed a law that makes it a crime to “deliberately reduce the lifespan of a product, to increase the rate of replacement”. The aptly-named organisation Halte à l’Obsolescence Programmée (HOP - Stop Planned Obsolescence), has brought the criminal lawsuit against Apple. If convicted of deliberate, planned obsolescence, the tech giant’s executives found responsible will be jailed for up to two years. They may also have to forfeit up to 300,000 euros, and 5% of the

firm’s annual turnover. The group said in a statement: “Apple has put in place a global strategy of programmed obsolescence, in order to boost its sales of new iPhones.” According to French Newspaper The Local, HOP believes that the US firm can be sued over the sale of all iPhones in France since the introduction of the 2015 law. It feels that Apple could be liable for a fine, in line with the value of all its iPhone French sales since the law came into force. Should prosecutors decide there is a legitimate claim, the suit will be heard in a criminal court. “Everything is organised to force consumers to renew their smartphones,” said HOP co-founder Laetitia Vasseur. “However, when the phone is priced at 1,200 euros, which is more than the minimum monthly wage in France, these practices are unacceptable and must be punished.” She added: “It is our mis-

sion to defend consumers and the environment against this waste, organised by Apple.” The discussion about throttled processor speed began after a Reddit post went viral last month. The Redditor wrote that Apple appeared to be slowing down old iPhones which have low-capacity batteries. After this post went viral, Apple was forced to respond, and admitted to it. According to the company, this deliberate throttling of processor speeds on older phones is an effort to keep them running smoothly. The throttling, according to Apple, began in 2016, despite years of reports from users. But instead of fixing a hardware issue, after users began to report widespread malfunctions with the iPhone 6s battery, Apple started to alter, algorithmically, how the phone uses power. The phone feels slower because it actually is slower, and Apple says this improves safety.

‘Born-again’ grandma survives a bus collision S P A N I S H grandmother Adela, who has survived a fearful collision with a bus, believes she’s been granted a second life. The 63-year-old, struck by the vehicle on a zebracrossing in the Valencia town of Aldaia, was then dragged for a kilometre, without the driver being aware of what had happened. She fractured her pelvis and broke two ribs, as well as being bruised all over. But, miraculously, she survived. The accident happened last Saturday at 7.30pm, as a storm gripped the town. Somehow, the belt of her coat became trapped between the two front wheels of the bus. But the street was empty of people because of the weather, so no one saw her being dragged along. Adela recalled in hospital, before having an operation: “I was on a zebra-crossing, but the driver just did not see me. He ran me over and just kept going.” She was dragged through the street before the bus

stopped at a red light and a passenger heard her screams. “I was wishing that someone would see me,” she added. “I just kept screaming. When they took me out from under the bus, the driver went white. Not even the police believed I had been dragged for such a long distance.

“The girl who raised the alarm stayed until the ambulance arrived and told me not to sleep; not to close my eyes. “I ended up with my legs on my head, folded like a sandwich, which is how I broke my pelvis. But I feel I’m born again. I guess I was not supposed to die that day.”

Sweet taste of failure

ELEVEN members of the same family, smuggling drugs in to Europe inside pineapples, have been arrested. The police intercepted a number of vessels, bound for Algeciras from Ecuador and Costa Rica, with a staggering 960kgs of cocaine discovered on board. The gang, believed to be

one of Europe’s largest, has been at large on the Costa del Sol for over 40 years. More than two million euros have been frozen across several bank accounts, and the gang’s 57 buildings, worth a total of 7m euros, have been repossessed by cops. The family had funnelled their illegal earnings through a shipping company, which, surprise, surprise, was actually nonexistent.

WE often write about the importance of protecting your wealth.

It is worth highlighting that one key element, whether you are looking at tax planning, estate planning, savings and investments or pensions, is that the arrangements and strategies you use should be designed around your specific, personal circumstances and aims. Otherwise, there may be unexpected consequences in future which do not suit what you had in mind for your family, or your investments may not be meeting your needs, or could be too risky. Your circumstances change over time, as can your objectives, at which point you need to review your arrangements. So,

12th January - 18th January 2018

Are your investments still suitable for you?

for example, it is important to reevaluate your financial planning when you retire, and it is critical that you carry out a thorough review when you move to the Canary Isles, to take your new circumstances, income needs and the different tax regime into account. A tailor-made strategic approach is key for the success of your investment portfolio. Every investor has different objectives, time horizon and attitude to risk. So it is vitally important that your portfolio is created and managed to meet your particular requirements. Too many people have portfolios which are not suitable for them. They often carry a higher level of risk than they are comfortable with, even though they may not realise this. They may not have adequate diversification,

or own “unregulated, collective, investment schemes” or illiquid assets. Or the investment choices, or combination of them, may not actually be appropriate to meet their specific needs. The opposite can also be true. People can be too cautious, and this can have consequences in their later years. Traditionally, many retirees have preferred to leave much of their savings in bank deposits. However, with interest rates close to zero, no risk means no returns. And when you take the effects of inflation and withdrawals into account, the capital in your deposit account is likely to erode. Some risk is unavoidable, to achieve an investment return that will outpace inflation. However, to avoid undue risk, you should

obtain a clear and objective assessment of your personal appetite for risk. You can then move on to look at allocation of assets, to create the most appropriate investment portfolio to match your profile and objectives. The higher your concentration in particular assets (or asset classes), the higher the risk. The tried-and-tested strategy to mitigate risk is diversification; a well-spread portfolio of investments, not only in terms of asset classes, but also by geographic region and market sectors, to limit your exposure to any single sector of the market. It is hard for private

investors to establish which are the best funds and managers to use, so specialist advice is essential, in order to select the most-appropriate investment strategies and asset managers to meet your needs. Also, always remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Investors can be seduced by investment schemes which claim to offer the alluring combination of high returns, with little, or no, risk. However, the bubble invariably bursts, and they lose their money. Finally, to achieve the best, real returns, and protect your wealth for future generations, you need

to use arrangements which shelter capital from tax, provide a tax-efficient income, and facilitate the transfer of capital to your beneficiaries, with the minimum of bureaucracy and inheritance taxes. So, for peace of mind, you need to get your appetite for risk assessed and matched to the optimum investment portfolio; have adequate diversification; review your portfolio from time to time, and ensure your assets are in a tax-efficient structure. NASA opts for galaxy picture NASA has chosen, for its picture of the day, a photograph taken by Canarian astrophysicist Daniel Lopez from Teide’s Observatory in Tenerife. It is a rare photograph, featuring the clouds of Andromedia, which is

a giant spiral galaxy and one of the closest to the planet Earth. It has a diameter of about 220,000 light years, in which almost a billion stars are gathered. The picture is special to NASA because these particular clouds have been seen previously, but only in images taken of the Milky Way. You can see the galaxy with the naked eye,

and is quite easy to find where there is no light pollution. And that is why, among the astrophysicists who live here on the Canary Islands, it is almost always the main topic of conversation. In Daniel’s picture, there are also some reddish clouds around the Galaxy which are, supposedly, formed from a gas of ionised hydrogen.

Hard Sun BBC1, 21.35

Renko (Agyness Deyn) persuades a hungry young journalist, Will Benedetti (Ukweli Roach), to post a story about the ‘Hard Sun’ conspiracy, instantly rendering her a target for Security Services agent Grace Morrigan (Nikki Amuka-Bird). The story goes public… but a month later, the government has reduced to the truth to a laughable ‘hoax’. Grace continues to hunt for the Hard Sun file, but only Renko knows the full dossier’s location. Hicks and Renko race to catch a murderer whose obsession with the Hard Sun ‘conspiracy’ is all too real. And, across London, at his facility, Daniel (Jojo Macari) receives an unexpected visitor.

McMafia BBC1, 21.00

Benny Chopra (Atul Kale) receives a call informing him that Vadim’s (Merab Ninidze) heroin shipment is moving across the border from Pakistan into India - and he is surprised by the quantities reported. Dilly (Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who is spying on Benny, realises that something unusual is going on. He breaks into Benny’s empty office with his men, but they are interrupted mid search by a late-working accountant. Holding the man at gunpoint, Dilly has him access Benny’s computer, where they find the information they require to pull off a heist. However Semiyon (David Strathairn) says Alex must decide whether or not to give the go ahead... Back in London at Godman Capital a suspicious Karin (Kemi-Bo Jacobs) tries to access the details of the fund which Alex is using to move Semiyon’s money around, but finds it password protected. After she confronts Alex (James Norton), he hires a professional hacker to cover his electronic trail. Suspicions are raised closer to home when Rebecca (Juliet Rylance) discovers that Alex has a secret second phone. Soon afterwards Karin approaches Rebecca about her concerns: have Alex’s lies finally caught up with him? Deeply worried by the recent developments in Prague, Vadim manages to track down Benes (Karel Roden) and puts him under surveillance. When this proves unfruitful, Vadim decides to make things personal: he needs to get to Benes and find out who’s backing him.

Blue Monday is drawing near - the dreaded date when credit card bills are opened and the reality of Christmas overspending and excess hits home. For many of us stopping our families sliding into debt is a constant battle. How many of us are truly savvy about how we spend and save our hard-earned money? And can individuals and institutions find new ways of making our cash go further? Financial expert and broadcaster Jasmine Birtles (pictured) reports from around the country, finding out how shoppers are coping with the Christmas financial hangover, how crucial our early years are in forming our attitudes to debt, and how innovative projects are being launched to help people avoid resorting to high-interest payday lenders. Studies show that our attitudes to money management are fixed in our early years. At Kirton Primary School in Boston, Lincolnshire, Jasmine meets children who are being helped to learn financial literacy and taught how to avoid debt.

Meanwhile, Cherry Healey is in the lab figuring out why fizzy drinks are so appealing, and historian Ruth Goodman is working out why we associate barley water with the Great British summertime. The connection dates back to 1934, when the marketing team from Robinson’s made up a batch to rehydrate the players at Wimbledon.

The spectacular sculptures and paintings of Michelangelo seem so familiar to us, but what do we really know about this Renaissance genius? Who was this ambitious and passionate

man? A virtuoso craftsman, Michelangelo’s artistry is evident in everything he touched. Beautiful and diverse works such as the towering statue of David, the deeply moving Pietà in the Papal Basilica of St. Peter and his tour-deforce, the Sistine Chapel ceiling, still leave us breathless today. Spanning his 89 years, Michelangelo: Love and Death takes a cinematic journey from the print and drawing rooms of Europe, through the great chapels and museums of Florence, Rome and the Vatican to explore the tempestuous life of Michelangelo. We go in search of a greater understanding of this most charismatic figure, his relationship with his contemporaries and his valuable artistic legacy. Through expert commentary and Michelangelo’s own words, this film takes a fresh look at an enigmatic man whose life is celebrated in every mark and every stroke he made.

‘Queen of Benefits’ spent stolen money for holiday A BRITISH motherof-12, dubbed the “Queen of Benefits”, has avoided jail, despite using stolen cash to pay for luxury, family holidays to Spain.

Cheryl Prudham spent some £7,671 on deposits for an all-inclusive trip to the Balearics, using money collected by her former husband, Robert Prudham, in a parking-meter fraud. The 34-year-old woman, from Cheshire, also cashed in on benefits amounting to more than 45,000 euros annually in government hand-outs, to buy luxury gifts for her kids. Robert, who stole coins and notes from station car-parks across Kent, and even from a hospital, was sentenced to 14 months after admitting fraud and theft between 4th January and 12th February, 2014. He actually picked up work as a money collector, by saying on his application form that he was of good character and had no criminal convictions. In fact, he had made 18 previous court appearances, covering

GOODS worth more than £3bn are being stolen by British shoppers annually via self-service tills, which equates to around £5 per person monthly. Around one in four people admits to stealing at least one item without paying. And, shockingly, a study shows that theft from unmanned checkouts has more than doubled in the past four years. Supermarkets appear to be the hardest hit, with the big boys, such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morissons and Waitrose, introducing selfscan check-outs in the last decade. Tesco was the first chain to adopt the technology, running a pilot scheme in 2003, which led to the national introduction in key stores within six years. Executives hoped it would be an easier way for customers to pay for goods, while reducing the need and expense of staff to man

29 offences. She appeared at Maidstone Crown Court, by video link from Warrington Crown Court in Cheshire, where she now lives. Judge Adele Williams said: “This offence was, in my

judgement, motivated by greed on your part.” The couldn’t-care-less mother received a furious backlash after appearing on Channel 5 documentary Benefits: Britain’s Most Shameless Mum.

Viewers saw her bragging that her family raked in thousands, which paid for expensive holidays and designer clothes. “I’m addicted to having babies and want to have another one soon,” she said.

Self-service tills? They’ll do nicely

the tills. However, the study’s findings suggest that selfcheckouts are costing businesses more money, because of a huge hike in shoplifting.

Online confessions show customers have been making the most of the newfound freedom, by giving themselves discounts, or passing items through for free.

One woman admits she pays less for Pink Lady apples, regularly, by selecting “Braeburn” when scanning the item through. And a man said he once asked a member of staff at Tesco to remove the tag for a bottle of vodka, and then placed it in his carrier-bag without scanning it. A 25-year-old man said he exploits the “carrierbag” system, in which shoppers are supposed to pay 5p a bag. He bags up his shopping as usual, but, when the automated till asks the question of how many he has used, he simply selects 0. This sneaky trick hasn’t gone unnoticed in some stores, however. Sainsbury’s Local, on Kensington Church Street in London, introduced a

“I don’t think it is anyone’s business… I can have as many children as I want.” She added, cheekily: “I’m claiming benefits that the Government have created for me. Why wouldn’t I take advantage of them?” “proof-of-purchase” policy for those wanting carrierbags. Despite the affluence of the well-heeled area, staff said customers flouted the rules, so the company was forced to introduce special measures. The plastic carriers were removed from the self-serve machines, and a sign was erected, reading: “Please ask an attendant for a bag and provide receipt once paid. Thank you.” The study, which polled 2,000 people, found toiletries, fruit-and-veg, as well as dairy products, were the most common items taken. And almost half of those who admitted stealing, did so regularly. However, the findings do not necessarily mean there has been a collapse in British morals, said experts. Up to 62% of those who admitted taking an item said it was because of a technical difficulty with the machine. And one-third claimed they had forgotten to pay, and realised only after getting home.

Atomic blonde hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot

THERE are those who dare, and those who think about it; those who can carry it off, and those who really shouldn’t. This week, we are talking about what it takes to be super blonde, and get away with it. Most people who try this at home fail terribly, because of the quality of chemicals used. In the salon, we control, completely, the effect of these lightnening products, so as to cause minumum damage. Lightening the hair to this level can take at least two applications to create the lift, then a toner is applied to cover over any remaining yellow. This leaves a purer-than-

Filling

white blonde, that really stands out. This process isn’t recommended if your hair is already very fragile, and you will need plenty of hair treatments afterwards to keep your hair in tiptop condition. Before this colour is carried out, you will

need a full, professional consultation, to explain the ins and outs. Of all colours, this is my favourite, but it’s one that should never be tried at home, or by inexperienced stylists. One wrong move can leave you with no hair, or a big, yellow disaster!

Brave new bold

By Carl pattison

ONE word that sums up fashion in 2018 is colour.

No matter what the slant on the current trend this year, we will see the emergence of everything from your primary colours to soft pastels, but put together in such a way as not to blend, but to complement. Look out for clashing vibrants with softer shades, and intricate and bold patterns

that don’t necessarily go together, but create a look that’s arty, almost Aztec. Search for bold, one-off pieces that you can add to a patterned item to clash together, your own take on this year’s new look. If it feels like it shouldn’t go together, then that’s the theme you’re going for. Forget matching your colours and patterns, and start clashing them to really strike out in this fashion year.

wall space

By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic

THIS part of decorating can be tricky, but there are plenty of options available. Whatever you choose, whether it’s something very personal, telling your life story, or selected because it looks good and goes with the décor, it has to be something you love looking at, day in, day out. With so many available types of wall art, if you are having a hard time finding something, it’s not for lack of choice. Starting with photography, it can be your own masterpieces or professional prints, a mix of both made into a gallery, or just the

two pieces standing alone. A collection of different frames, or all in the same frames and mats, the positioning of them is quite important. Make sure you take into consideration the size of the wall you are putting them on, and keep in proportion. You can find layout templates of galleries and frame clusters on the internet, to help you out with this. Then we have paintings. There are so many available in every shape, size and colour you might need, to bring one room’s décor all together. Contemporary paintings, abstracts, city lines, classic reproductions - the list is endless. Metal wall art is a modern, alternative choice for filling your walls. They can look really effective against

a plain background, and many are so three-dimensional, they almost jump out from the wall at you. They also work really well on exterior walls, if you need something for the terrace. Other than wall art itself, clocks and mirrors make great decorative pieces. There are many oversized ones available nowadays, and they can make real statement pieces. And, of course, they have a use at the same time! In Muebles Chic, we have a wide range of all of these, and more, to choose from. We can also help via e-mail: muebles. chic25@gmail.com and send images of what we have available. We provide a delivery and fitting service as well, so you don’t even have to lift a finger!

Cyclists on roads By Emma

from Motorworld

WITH Christmas gone and the New Year here, we are going to be seeing more and more of drivers’ mostfavourite people … cyclists. Let’s start by saying that, in the main, they are courteous, and respect the rules of the road, but, increasingly here in Tenerife, this seems not to be the case. Sometimes they appear to monopolise all the road, to the exclusion of other road users, and this begs the question, is this legal? After all, cars cannot legally “choose” to use all of a two-way road because they “want” to, so should cyclists be allowed to? There are many ways to look at this. Firstly, yes. Cyclists have just as much right to use the roads as cars and other vehicles, but they must respect the highway code and the rules and laws of the country in which they

are cycling, and not those of their home country, which often differ. Spanish driving laws state that a vehicle should allow a distance of 1.5 metres between the cyclist and their vehicle, when passing/ overtaking them. This is not always possible, as the size of the road simply does not permit this. You should always allow an adequate distance between your car and the cyclist when passing, but they should not be riding more than two abreast, and should be courteous and aware of other road users. Sadly, here in Tenerife, more especially in the winter, cyclists of all nationalities converge on the island and almost take over the roads. This causes frustration amongst other road users, which is quite understandable. Despite talks and calls for it, there is still no legislation that requires a cyclist to hold a valid liability insurance, i.e. public liability at the very least, to cover any damage they may cause. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident which was caused by a cyclist, or group of cyclists, you would have to take private legal action against him/them to recoup

your costs, and this is very difficult. Equally frustrating is when a cyclist uses a pedestrian crossing whilst cycling. By law, this is not permitted because they are for pedestrians, not bicycles. If you are a cyclist on a zebra crossing, you are considered to be a vehicle, and are treated as such. In order to use a zebra or pelican/light- controlled crossing, the rider must dismount and walk across. Failure to do so can land the cyclist in hot water. If a cyclist is riding over a crossing at speed, and the driver did not have enough time to see them and brake accordingly, then

the incident is the fault of the cyclist, and not the car/ vehicle driver. Last year, a case was reported in Spain where a cyclist was crossing on a zebra crossing to follow the flow of the traffic. This was at a lightcontrolled crossing where the vehicle had a flashing amber light, meaning he could proceed with caution if safe, and the pedestrians had a green light to walk across. The cyclist deemed himself to be a pedestrian and rode across. The car was hit in the side by the cyclist, with the fault, initially, being placed on the driver. At appeal, the judge ruled that

it was the cyclist’s mistake, as the green light was for the passage of pedestrians. The bike was being ridden, so it was considered to be a vehicle, and at fault. The cyclist was ordered to pay over 500 euros to the driver of the car for damages and compensation, and also has been ordered to pay the court costs. This should serve as a strong message to cyclists that they must adhere to the rules and laws of the road, and respect the safety of other road users. Some house-insurance policies have cover for cycles, but you should check whether this provides thirdparty liability cover, should you damage another vehicle or injure a person whilst riding, or if it is merely for theft when at your home. If not, then it is advisable to take out a small insurance to cover yourself. This is not a legal requirement, but it is an option that is available. You would not drive your car without insurance, so why should your bike be any different? This article is meant to highlight the position regarding cyclists and the use of our roads, in a safe and secure manner. In no way does it reflect a personal or professional opinion.

Almond milk's fake ingredient By Val Sainsbury MANY of us are searching, constantly, for alternatives to animal milk, for various reasons. But what a lot of us don't realise is that commercial almond milk has been exposed as a fake beverage which is thickened with a substance called carrageenan, instead of almonds. It is made from red seaweed, and added to the milk to thicken and stabilise the liquid. Almond milk is a healthy beverage, touted by many health advisers for its nutritional benefits. Known since the Middle Ages, it has enjoyed increased popularity in recent years, as it has become morewidely available. It is traditionally made from almonds and water, but many commercially-

available forms of almond milk contain carrageenan. What is almond milk? The milk is made by blending almonds and water, and then straining the mixture. Sweeteners are sometimes added. In 2014, almond milk surpassed soy milk in popularity. It contains about 90 calories per eightounce cup, has no saturated fats or cholesterol, and is lactose-free. It contains half the daily requirement of Vitamin E, and a good dose of vitamin D, but very little protein. With its creamy, nut-like taste, almond milk is a good alternative to milk in coffee and on cereal. Its low-calorie content makes it a good food for dieters, and those who are lactose intolerant. People who regularly drink almond milk are advised to ensure that they get adequate protein from other plant or animal sources. One of the problems with commercial almond milk is that it contains only 2% almonds. In fact, some of the labels list more sweeteners than almonds in

the mixture. Nutritionally, a handful of almonds and a glass of water would be more beneficial, and a lot cheaper! The labelling laws currently allow companies to use additives instead of the nutritious almonds that consumers expect. For every four pints of almond milk, about 144 to 192 almonds are needed. However, only 38 to 50 almonds are used by some producers. Instead of almonds, the product is thickened with carrageenan, which is void of nutrients. Recently, two leading US suppliers stated they would be removing carrageenan from their products. Harmful health effects Carrageenan has been s h o w n to cause n u m e r o u s health problems, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Research has shown that exposure to carrageenan

could cause ulcers in the colon, and possibly even contribute to GI cancers. In 1972, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considered a restriction on dietary carrageenan, but no regulation was put into

effect, which means that manufacturers are free to use this product at their discretion. First used as a food additive in the 1930s, carrageenan is also used as a laxative, a treatment for peptic ulcers, and in toothpaste, room deodorisers, pesticides, cosmetics and pharmaceutical drugs. In 1959, carrageenan was granted GRAS (generally regarded as safe) status. It easily combines with milk proteins, and has been used as a substitute for fats in food. It can be found in cottage cheese, whipped cream, ice cream, infant formulas and processed meats. Nutritional benefits of almond milk Almond milk is a dairyand-lactose-free beverage that serves as a healthy alternative to cows' milk. It contains the same health benefits as almonds, containing nutrients such as Vitamin E, riboflavin, protein and fibre. Almonds also help with heart health, because they contain monounsaturated fats, which are good for the heart.

Three cheers for chia seeds THESE tiny “black beauties” are among the healthiest foods on the planet, and are loaded with nutrients that can have important benefits for your body and brain. They are from the plant Salvia Hispanica, which grows natively in South America, and is part of the mint family. They were an important food for the Aztecs and Mayans, who prized them for their ability to provide sustainable energy. “Chia” is the ancient Mayan word for “strength”, and, despite their ancient history as a dietary staple, only recently did chia seeds become recognised as a modern-day superfood. In the past few years, they have exploded in popularity, and are now consumed by health-conscious people all over the world. They deliver a massive amount of nutrients, with very few calories. A 1oz (28 grams) serving of chia seeds contains: • Fiber: 11 grams • Protein: 4 grams • Fat: 9 grams (5 of which are Omega-3s) • Calcium: 18% of the RDA (recommended dietary allowance) • Manganese: 30% of the RDA

• Magnesium: 30% of the RDA • Phosphorus: 27% of the RDA • They also contain a decent amount of zinc, Vitamin B3 (Niacin), potassium, Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) and Vitamin B2. This makes them one of the world’s best sources of several important nutrients, calorie for calorie, and they are usually grown organically, are non-GMO, and naturally free of gluten. Another area where chia seeds shine is in their high amount of anti-oxidants. These protect the sensitive fats in the seeds from going rancid. Although anti-oxidant supplements are not very effective, getting antioxidants from foods can have positive effects on health. They fight the production of free radicals, which can damage molecules in cells, and contribute to ageing, and diseases like cancer. There are some claims about chia seeds having more anti-oxidants than blueberries. Almost all the carbohydrates in them are fibre, and looking at the nutrition profile of chia seeds, you see that an ounce has 12 grams of carbohydrate. However, 11 of those grams are fibre, which isn’t digested by the body. Fibre doesn’t raise

blood sugar, and doesn’t require insulin to be disposed of, so, therefore, shouldn’t count as a carb. The true carb content is only one gram per ounce, which is very low. This makes chia a low-carb-friendly food. Because of all the fibre, chia seeds can absorb up to 10-12 times their weight in water, becoming gellike and expanding in your stomach. Theoretically, this should increase fullness and slow the absorption of your food. Fibre also feeds the friendly bacteria in the intestine, which is important, because keeping your gut-bugs wellfed is absolutely crucial for health. Chia seeds are 40% fibre, by weight, which

makes them one of the best sources of fibre in the world. Chia seeds contain a decent amount of protein. By weight, they are about 14% protein, which is very high compared with most plants. They also contain a good balance of essential amino acids, so our bodies should be able to make use of the protein in them. Protein has all sorts of benefits for health. It is also the most weight-lossfriendly nutrient in the diet, by far. A high-protein intake reduces appetite, and has been shown to reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60%, and the desire for night-time snacking by 50%. So chia seeds really are an

excellent protein source, especially for people who eat little, or no, animal products. There have been several studies on glucomannan, a fibre that works in a similar way, showing that it can lead to weight loss. The protein in chia seeds could help to reduce appetite and food intake. They do also seem to be well tolerated, but if you’re not used to eating a lot of fibre, then there is a possibility of digestive side effects if you eat too much at a time. A common dosage recommendation is 20 grams (about 1.5 tablespoons) of chia seeds, twice per day. When added to water and allowed to sit for 30 minutes, chia forms a gel. Researchers suggest that this reaction also takes place in the stomach, slowing the process by which digestive enzymes break down carbohydrates and convert them into sugar. They have a nut-like flavour. You can mix seeds in water, and add lime or lemon juice. As with ground flax seeds, you can sprinkle ground or whole chia seeds on cereal, in yogurt or salads, eat them as a snack, or grind them and mix them with flour, when making muffins or other baked goods.

The problem with podencos

PODENCOS are a breed of Canarian hunting dog which often come in to the kennels. Because hunting is still permitted on the island, thousands of them are still as working hunting dogs. Inevitably, they often go missing, and end up as strays which breed continuously, or are collected and delivered to local shelters, such as K9. They make remarkable pets, and, although they are notorious for their energy and nervous attitude, they are very loyal and gentle, and cherish their owners. Because of their nervy behaviour, if they are not socialised they can develop phobias. Many of them

are apprehensive around strangers, which can make them difficult to home. However, like Marco, most of them are abolutely fine, and are waiting for someone to give them the opportunity they deserve. Why not come and meet him? We encourage you to adopt a podenco, if you have the chance. They make amazing pets, and deserve great homes! Did you know? WE'RE all aware how kittens are adorable, cuddly, playful and curious, but there's more to them that you may not know. Blue eyes All kittens are born with blue eyes, because the pigment that creates eye colour hasn't yet developed. It takes 2-3 months for cats to develop their permanent eye colour. They also have extremelypoor eyesight until they're about three weeks old, but, after that, it continues to improve as they grow. Why a “kindle” of kittens? Everyone’s familiar with the word “litter,” which is used to describe a group of kittens. Another, less-familiar term for the same thing is a “kindle.” The difference is that a “kindle” is a term specifically for kittens, but the word “litter” can describe a group of many other types of animals. Litter sizes A litter, or kindle, generally has 1-9 kittens. The number can be influenced by different factors, including the age of the mother. The largest recorded litter was 19. Teeth Kittens begin to grow tiny, sharp teeth when they're about 3-6 weeks old. These are their deciduous teeth, and, by about six weeks, they are all present. Kittens have 26 of these, while an adult cat has 30 permanent teeth. At about three months of

age, a kitten's teeth begin to fall out as the permanent teeth come in. At around 6-7 months old, these are usually all in place. Smokey Waiting to be adopted is Smokey, a very pretty 2-3 month old girl. She has a sweet nature, and is very good around dogs, cats and people! She would be a perfect addition to any family. She has had treatment for both worms and fleas, and her first vaccination. All kittens go on a week's trial, in your home, so you can be sure you've made the right decision. Adoptions Please consider adopting a kitten/cat from us. All our cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com/pets. Ring or Whatsapp Sharon on 662 52 40 06 (seven days a week 9-6pm), or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm, on 6712 82773. Message us on

Facebook, or contact us on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. If you adopt two kittens together, kitten injections, micro-chips and neutering is FREE for the second kitten. Adopt a black kitten, or two, and both kittens receive the above treatments, free of charge! Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/ condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.

TributoFest

The next instalment of TributoFest takes place on Saturday, 27th January with headliners Coldplace, who are acknowledged as being Coldplay’s best tribute band in the world. Charlotte Hopley is also featured in the lineup as Katy Perry, along with Ed Sheeran, who’s performed by Stuart Beagley, with whom we chatted this week.

Stuart’s Ed is just Perfect! IT should be the most-daunting challenge of his blossoming career, but Stuart Beagley can’t wait to demonstrate his version of Ed Sheeran on a big stage.

The 38-year-old, who appears as Ed Sheeran, with his guitar and looping pedal in the TributoFest line-up at Magma on Saturday, 27th January, said: “This has got to be the biggest thing I’ve ever done in my life. “It will be phenomenal for me, but I’m not nervous. I try to do an authentic show and produce something which is exactly like Ed does on stage. And I know there is a big difference between being a tribute act and being an impersonator. “I came to Tenerife in 2008, and I’ve been performing as Ed for 20 months. I was just fascinated by the way he works, and I’d never seen anything like it.” Stuart added: “People even call me Ed at gigs, and I’m always happy to role-play. I

started playing my father’s guitar at 13, and he showed me a few chords. And he’s not even very good! “But when he realised that I was taking it a bit more seriously than he ever did, he took me out and bought me a couple of instruction books, from which I learned how to play chords.” The modest, Edinburghborn musician makes regular appearances at different venues here in the

South, and he’s a popular act. That is, perhaps, because he is always ringing the changes, and looking to add new songs to his evergrowing repertoire for his followers. Stuart hasn’t got a favourite Sheeren song because he gets so involved with each and every track as he learns them. “My favourite track changes, according to which one I’m working on at the time,” he

revealed. “Ed had an album out in March 2017, and all 16 tracks went into the top 20 in the UK. He’s had a lot of exposure and there’s been a lot of interest, so he’s a great act to emulate. “I see people in the street and they say, ‘there’s Ed Sheeran’. I want to keep doing this for the foreseeable future. I saw Ed in concert in Madrid last year, and I’d love to meet him because he’s an absolute musical genius.” Stuart, who was nominated in the Best Tribute category at last year’s TEAs awards, will play about seven songs at the TributoFest concert, and he can’t wait! “I’ve invested in new equipment for TributoFest,” he said. “There’s one song I’ve never done live before, and I want to perform it, as a surprise.” Also appearing at the Magma on the 27th are headliners Coldplay (Coldplace) and Katy Perry (Charlotte Hopley), with many more tribute acts to follow this year.

See next week’s issue for our interview with Charlotte Hopley

Tribute bands and solo artistes have become a subculture of their own, as an important and lucrative part of the rock landscape. Many promising musicians have gained experience in tribute bands before launching their own careers. And several bands, including Journey, Yes and Judas Priest, have found replacements for key members in them. Some of the best tributes are more similar to the original bands than the actual bands themselves! And that’s why TributoFest is bringing some of the world’s leading tribute bands here in a series of Tenerife concerts, enabling fans to spend a night in the Magma, with three of their favourites on each bill. So come and enjoy a full concert experience, comparable to that of the originals... and for the first time, you can bring the kids! Tickets available for adults from 30 euros, and juniors (age 7-17) only 20 euros. Go to www.tenerifemagma.com or www.tributofest.com

The late, late show Albacete 1 CD Tenerife 2 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review

EXPECT the unexpected has always been good advice to Tenerife fans. But this success at Albacete shocked even the most ardent followers, with its sheer audacity and display of character.

A goal down, a wasted penalty and a harsh sending-off failed to deter Tenerife from their first away victory since August. Dani Hernandez, reclaiming his goalkeeping gloves, was instrumental in holding the hosts off when they threatened to put the game beyond Tenerife. Bela put a first-minute shot wide and was a constant threat, and his strike partner, Zozulia, who also looked dangerous, had to be blocked early on by Raul Camara. Fit-again Carlos Ruiz was kept busy in the heart of the Tenerife defence, but, up front, Juan Villar on the right and Juan Carlos Real on the left struggled to supply any strong openings for Longo. And when Tenerife did launch an assault down the right, it fizzled out before testing the keeper. Zozulia produced a cracking shot on the half-hour, which brought a magnificent response from Dani, who tipped the ball away with a full-length dive across his goal.

The half closed with Albacete squandering a freekick on the edge of the Tenerife box… all pretty unremarkable, and, worryingly, similar to Tenerife’s previous away games. Longo, struggling with a leg strain, had to be replaced with Suso just after the break. He arrived just in time to see Bela force his way between two Tenerife defenders to put the home side ahead. It seemed a long way back for CDT, especially when Albacete’s Savolich handled to give away a penal-

ty, and Juan Carlos kicked it straight at the keeper! A few minutes later, Zozulia pulled Ruiz down when trying to get past him. It was almost a mugging, but the ref didn’t see it that way and booked defender Ruiz, who raged at the ref, received a second yellow card, and saw red. So there were Tenerife, at the bottom of a hole they had dug themselves. Thankfully, it was a challenge the team relished. Juan Villar beat two defenders and slipped a lovely ball through to Juan

Juan Carlos tragedy JUAN Carlos Garcia, the former CD Tenerife player, has lost his fight against leukaemia, dying at the age of 29 at home in Honduras. The defender joined Tenerife at the start of the 2014-15 season on loan from Wigan Athletic, where he had been for two years. The Tenerife move came just after the Brazil World Cup, in which he was in the Honduras

squad, and he earned 39 caps for his country. Juan Carlos played in a few Tenerife friendlies only, because they had a full quota of non-EU players, and he was diagnosed with leukaemia in January 2015. He went back to the UK for treatment, but later returned to his home country and family. Tenerife will hold a minute’s silence, in memory of Juan Carlos, before their next home game, against Barcelona on Sunday, 21st January.

Carlos, who made amends with a sharp finish to level the match. But Albacete still posed a danger, with Bela heading over, and Camara making a timely intervention at the post. Alberto took over from Juan Carlos, and Malbasic arrived for Juan Villar. Albacete brought on former Tenerife striker Aridane, whose first touch was a header that Dani claimed with a safe pair of hands. There was a similar fate for Bela’s floated shot, and it was good to see the old, dependable Dani back on form. Into the final three minutes, and Camara pushed

up the right flank. He looked up, sent a long, deep ball to the far side of the home goal, and Casadesus, racing in, leapt to head the ball into the roof of the net for a memorable triumph. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife have another away test at Real Zaragoza. But with two home games to follow, they have a big incentive to put a winning run together and climb from 11th place to gatecrash the promotion play-off places. But coach Marti will have to dig deep into the squad at Zaragoza because Ruiz, Casadesus, Longo, and Camara are all suspended!

CD Marino

Yassine’s derby-debut double WOULD you really want a local derby any other way than packed with passion, tough tackles, and a little controversy?

Of course not, and Marino won the hard way, with new Moroccan striker Yassine at the heart of the action, scoring both goals, after they had gifted their opponents an early goal. There was another encouraging debut from Argentine midfielder Favarel, fresh from playing for Whitehawk in England’s Vanarama National League South But just four minutes into the game, an Ibarra attack should have been cut out. Saavedra half-blocked a shot, and the ball fell to Roberto, who scored with an easy tapin. There was another home blow when left-back Fran Delgado went off injured, after feeling the effects of a typical, full-bloodied tackle. A quick reshuffle saw rightback Nathan move into the centre of defence, Saavedra take over Fran’s role, and Kevin Castro drop back to cover the right-back slot as sub Ricky arrived in midfield.

CD Marino 2 UD Ibarra 1

Ibarra tried to take advantage of the uncertainty, Sandro firing a shot through the defence, which keeper David covered. The same opponent followed up with a long, dipping shot, that was scrambled clear for a corner. Yassine looked strong and lively for Marino, and, when the ball broke to him on the left, he made some space and slotted the ball past the Ibarra keeper to equalise. Ayoub, who did his best

to expose Castro’s natural attacking urges, swung a cross in from the right, which Hector Pano controlled well, with a header back to keeper David. Marino were growing in confidence, and Diego saw a shot rebound off the post, while Pedro hit a tame strike at Adrian in the visitors’ goal. Zeben and Castro combined well to make another opening for the blues, but Ibarra captain Juanmi mopped

up the danger. Yassine and Roberto finished the first half with decent efforts for their teams, to leave the match finely poised. A keeper rushing out of his area is generally seen as fair game, and as Adrian charged for a loose ball, Yassine sent him sprawling to the ground. Ibarra captain Juanmi retaliated by pushing Yassine over, and it all threatened to boil over just after the restart. But the ref did well, making

allowances for the nature of the game, and simply booked both protagonists. Adrian’s knee injury forced him off, leaving Ibarra with a replacement keeper, which further fuelled the raw emotions. The new keeper spilled his first shot from Castro, but no one was on hand to punish him. Marino pressure told, though, when Pano had a shot saved and Yassine buried the rebound. Zeben looked to have a clear chance for another attempt, but former Marino player Coly robbed him of the ball. The final 20 minutes were frantic, Marino subs Nami and Juanma combining well but finishing with a wild, high shot. Mendy, another Ibarra player returning to his former club, had two clear sights of goal, but rushed his efforts. Marino’s David then made a flying save from a free-kick on the edge of the box, and he punched away a late attempt from a teasing cross. Despite the win, Marino remain in 12th spot, but will have renewed their confidence, hopefully, to start climbing the table.

New signings settling in Egatesa Granadilla 1 Espanyol 0 TWO victories in a week, one against overseas opposition, gave Granadilla the best possible start to 2018.

They welcomed Espanyol to their San Isidro ground last Sunday, and another goal from Maria Jose Perez earned their success. New arrivals Itziar Martinez and Stefani Vatafu weren’t in the lineup, but a special midweek game eased them in. Switzerland’s FC Basel ladies, from the European Champions League, are on a training break at Tenerife Top Training in La Caleta, and they provided a testing challenge for Granadilla on Wednesday. Finnish keeper Tinny, who guested in goal for Granadilla in the first half, made a couple of great saves. But most of the action was at the other

Visitors dine on Arona end of the pitch, with Michel called on to keep Granadilla at bay. Liberal changes to both sides at half-time shook the game up, and Itziar got to warm her gloves, while Stefani impressed on her debut. The only goal, a wellstruck shot from Sara Tui that left the keeper stranded, came after 55 minutes. Basel coach Sissy Raith, pleased with her side’s workout, said: “We are in our mid-season break…13

games played and another 15 to come, and we always go away for a training week. “We went to Valencia last year, but the facilities here have impressed us and we would like to come back. We learned quite a bit from the Tenerife players, who had good technical skills and were clever on the ball.” Granadilla are at home again this Sunday, this time hosting Rayo Vallecaqno at noon in San Isidro.

SUNDAY lunch was put on hold as Arona Tenerife Sur hosted Santa Cruz team Dimorol Libby’s at Los Cristianos sports hall. Both teams made a grand meal of the clash, which went to a fifth-set tie-break, before Dimorol emerged 3-2 winners. The visitors took the opening set 25-22, but Arona tied the clash with a 25-18 advantage. The third set just didn’t want to end as the teams slugged it out for supremacy, with Dimorol shading it 28-26. It looked as though Arona

had broken their resolve as they took the fourth set 25-23, but there was plenty of fight left in their northern opponents, who pulled ahead to clinch a 1510 set, the points, and the glory. Sevilla-born Marisa Fernandez was the outstanding player, who not only shone for the winners, but was voted best player of the weekend’s programme of Superliga games. Dimorol rose to third place, while Arona stayed in fifth, facing a tough trip at leaders Logroño this weekend.

Steve leaves no hope! NEW Year, new hope… but, for some, it’s the same old story, and Boothen’s Steve kept up his usual maximum in their demolition of home team Sundowners.

Palms Pool Bar surprised themselves by taking the game to Emerald Lounge, but they lost in the trebles and recorded a 5-3 reverse, which was a lot more than expected. Waterfall looked to start 2018 with a win when they welcomed Picasso’s, but the visitors were too strong in the final game, and took the honours 5-3. Grizzly was in fine form for The Pub, finishing with a 146, and other great finishing from his team-mates sent the Tavern A back to San Blas on the wrong end of a 7-1 scoreline. The evening’s tightest matches involved four teams who have represented the league for

many years. Loch-In A against Pas O Nadas A pitched Wayne and Daddy Cool against each other, and both recorded 180s. But Richard was victorious by the odd game in five. However, the doubles went to the home side, who eventually won 5-3. Gaffers’ game against Phoenix Bar was as close, with Joe’s three perfect darts helping to take the match to a deciding, team showdown, which Phoenix Bar played well enough to take, and with it a winning 5-3 result. Spear Chuckers welcomed Ourplace Playboys in a catch-up game, which was a onesided affair, the home team enjoying a 7-1 victory. Nauta Nomads travelled to Marilyn’s A, who are still going strong in their promotion push, and the home side brushed aside the opposition 7-1. Ourplace Breakaways welcomed Clouseau’s, and, in a night of close games, the home team

Basketball

Iberostar bouncing badly EVERYTHING that could go wrong for Iberostar Tenerife at San Sebastian last Saturday did, as Delteco GBC romped to a 89-70 win. The only real resistance came from recent Greek signing Kositas Vasiliadis, with 12 points, as the first quarter scores fell 27-13 and 14-10 to give the visitors an impossible task. A slight improvement saw the final two periods of play finish 27-24, and 21-23. But coach Fotios Katsikaris will have recurring nightmares about the game, because an angry

exchange with the ref led to his eviction from the bench. At least there was European Champions League success

for Tenerife on Wednesday, Turkey’s Gaziantep going down 72-53, but the coach still wasn’t smiling afterwards.

His Argentine captain Nico Richotti, who was carried off with a cruciateligament injury to his right leg, will be sidelined

for at least six months. The game was a formality for Tenerife against the qualifying group’s bottom team, who had recently appointed former Tenerife coach Nenad Markovich. But he couldn’t upset his old charges. Quarter scores went 1513, 19-21, 21-14, and 17-5 to keep Tenerife as group leaders, Mike Tobey topscoring with 13 points. But, understandably, there was a flat atmosphere afterwards. The coach must now find a replacement for his captain, which won’t be easy in playing terms. And it will be even more challenging for him to replace his leader’s inspirational qualities.
