Milk products are withdrawn following a salmonella fear
MILK products from the French group Lactalis have been pulled from supermarket shelves in Spain, amid fears that a salmonella bacteria has spread there. The French dairy group has announced that it will withdraw 37 products under the Sanutri, Damira and Puleva Bebé brands. And, already, some 550,000 individual products have been recalled. The decision to pull the products came as authorities confirmed that an infant in the Basque country was treated for salmonella, and another case was suspected in Greece. At least 35 children have fallen sick in France from contaminated milk powder, sold by the French dairy, which manufactures a host of household dairy products. A Eurosurveillance report, signed by 16 scientists at the Pasteur Institute, as well as France’s public health agency, says the contaminated Lactalis products were exported “to 66 countries, including 12 in the European Union”. Alerts were issued for the concerned countries in early December, after French inspectors descended on the company’s Craon factory, to where the outbreak was traced. In France, of the 35 infected children, all 18 of those hospitalised have been released and are doing fine, said the health agency.

Men’s frightening attack still haunts mum-of-two Continued from Front Noelia Rodriguez Abreu, the terrified mother-of-two, was tied up and gagged by the thugs, who also put a bag over her head, and then robbed her of around 2,000 euros. They searched her handbag and found the cash, which, it transpired, were the takings from an excursion point at the hotel where she works. The pair then dragged the poor woman back into her house. Noelia had no idea who they were, and only after they left the premises did she start to
scream and shout for help, to attract her neighbours. And she actually called the police by pressing the required numbers with her nose, because they had tied her hands behind her back. National Police are urging people with relevant information to contact them, but a source said: “Nothing that happened to Noelia was a coincidence. The men knew who she was, where she lived and when she would be alone… everything, from her comings and goings, to when she would have had a
lot of money in her home.” When the police arrived, she was in a severe state of shock and had to be treated by the ambulance crew, who were also there as a result of the call. The 43-year-old mum was shaken up too badly to speak of her ordeal, but her brother stood in for her, saying: “On Monday night, Noelia didn’t stay at her home because she was very frightened and still shocked. “She stayed at her mother’s house, and is still reliving the whole, unpleasant experi-
ence, so it’s hardly surprising that she doesn’t want to make any statements.” Neither Puerto de la Cruz Mayor Lope Alfonso, nor Los Realejos Mayor Manuel Dominguez, would comment on the incident. They both agreed that they would rather “stay discreet and respect the investigation”, which is being handled by Puerto de la Cruz National Police. The attack has caused enormous concern among local residents and colleagues, especially those who are close to Noelia.
Flu virus still so deadly this year THE flu vaccine this winter is less effective than in previous years in the Canaries, because of the mutation of one virus included in the dose, and the epidemic here is spreading.
Dead man might be a missing pensioner
THE body of a man was discovered on Tuesday at a rustic area in Arona, and police believe it could be that of an 80-year-old. The Guardia Civil says there is a possible connection with the pensioner, who was reported missing in San Miguel de Abona last month. The body, which had decomposed, was found at around 9pm on waste ground near El Camino Real, and the autopsy will confirm the identity of the deceased.
Antonia Sierra, Professor of Preventive Medicine at the University of La Laguna, insists that people at high risk must be inoculated because they will be better protected against the virus. Six people have died so far, and there have been 50 hospital admissions. Some 181 cases in every 100,000 inhabitants have been infected so far, and the Professor is convinced the figures will rise over the coming week. Sierra warns that these figures will grow, and reminds people that a total of 28 people died from flu in last year’s campaign.

Torrent voted new leader of Catalans’ parliament CATALAN’S pro-independence parties took control of parliament on Wednesday, in what should be the first step towards restoring the Regional Government, after almost three months of direct rule from Madrid. Celebrations erupted in Barcelona among flagwaving supporters as Roger Torrent, of the Republican Left (ERC), was voted in as President, which makes him head of the speaker’s committee, the chamber’s decision-making body. The 38-year-old will now play a key role in deciding the fate of Carles Puigdemont, the ousted Catalan leader, whose proposal for a longdistance inauguration from Belgium will be ruled on by the committee. Torrent’s role comes with a degree of risk, however, because its former occupant, Carme Forcadell, is facing charges of sedition and rebellion, for facilitating the independence drive. Torrent, addressing the chamber, denounced the
Airlines’ Tenerife cancellation RYANAIR will cancel night flights at Tenerife South Airport from 3rd April to 30th June. And, says airport operator Aena, it is to enable essential maintenance works to take place on the runway. The resurfacing works will be carried out from 11.30pm to 6am, to minimise impact on daily operations. Several other companies also use the airport during these hours.

legal proceedings against much of the pro-independence leadership. He said the imprisonment of three parliamentarians, including Oriol Junqueras, the former Vice-President and ERC leader, was “absolutely unjustified, and impedes them being able to freely exercise their rights”. Opposition parties had tried to thwart the election of Torrent with a request,
swiftly denied, that the parliament reject delegated votes from the three jailed politicians, whose empty seats were marked with yellow ribbons. Puigdemont, along with four, former, cabinet members in self-imposed exile in Brussels, dropped their attempts to vote, via delegates, after Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy warned that he would
appeal such a move at the Constitutional Court. But while the legal efforts of the independence bloc depleted the absolute majority of 70 seats, won in the 21st December election, secessionists held on to a simple majority in a second round of voting. Torrent’s victory was lauded by Puigdemont, who said he was convinced he had the “courage to protect
the institutions and the country”. The formation of the new parliament was met with silence in Madrid. But, in Brussels, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar told the European Parliament that he hoped Rajoy’s government would talk to the incoming Catalan administration, adding: “The only possible solution is dialogue.”
Adeje Youth Centre has bumper 11,000 visitors MORE than 11,000 youngsters visited Adeje’s Municipal Youth Centre last year, revealed Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares, in charge of this sector. He added: “It is a clear indication that the borough’s young people see the place as their centre, and somewhere they can use for services and activities.” Of the vast number, 40% were girls and young women, while 60% were boys and young men, with the 14-16s representing the largest age group. There are a range of programmes and activities on offer, designed to
engage and encourage the borough’s younger residents, from those directed at secondary school students and their studies, to programmes
for after-school hobbies: music, literature, cinema, games, gastronomy walks, excursions, and lots more. There is a specific range of activities for the 12-15 age
bracket, with workshops and chats designed to improve social harmony, educational opportunities and personal development. The centre, working within European initiatives, also offers a “Garantia Juvenil”, which operates a programme aimed at easing access into the labour market. It offers young people courses and training to improve their employment opportunities, when they have finished formal schooling or are currently out of work. In parallel, Adeje’s Department of Youth, as it did last year, works with private entities offering a series of activities such as a robotics workshop, body-boarding, youth exchanges, etc.

Hooded gunman hunted by police
Magnificent beauty spot is all yours, for just 6m euros THE owner of this beautiful, remote part of the world, situated at Gran Canaria’s Gui Gui National Park, is selling his nature reserve for six million euros, through a Chinese estate agent. On the front page of one of China’s most-recognised estate agent websites, is the for-sale advert, detailing the Natural Reservation, which covers a vast three million square metres. The selling points include
details about its environment and climate, and the advert also describes large beaches, along with access to land, which connects to a small beach that appears only when the tide is low. Other factors, such as the fine weather, and the fact that the Natural Space is overflowing with nature, are also pinpointed. The website states that this is a natural spot in Gran Canaria, considered to be “one of the most important islands for nature and tourism in the Canaries”. Details on the website are in English and Spanish,
which, intentionally, links the landscape to tourism in Gran Canaria. The webpage also makes it clear that the area is a Natural Space/ Reservation, yet does not clarify what possibilities it has for tourist potential. However, according to the estate agents, the Chinese are looking for long-term investments, worldwide, especially if the investments are environmental or ecological. But what the Chinese probably won’t know, if interested, is that The Gui Gui area is, currently, the subject of numerous legal disputes.
A HOODED gunman targeted two men in Ofra, Santa Cruz, on Saturday night. But, fortunately, his aim was poor! The incident happened as two men left a local bar, heading towards Calle Yucatan, when shots were fired from a passing van. The attack was believed to have been premeditated because the man was driving erratically, hidden under his hooded jacket. After firing, he fled the
scene and abandoned his vehicle about a kilometre away, then torched it. The fire service was soon there to douse the blaze, while police hunted, in vain, for the shooter. His targets have not yet been identified because they jumped into another car, said sources, and began to chase the van. Needless to say, they did not report the incident to the police. National Police homicide officers, in charge of the investigation, are hoping to gather sufficient evidence to arrest those involved.

NEWS IN BRIEF Tornado’s 40m-euro damage

Madrid Trade Fair vital to entice our Canarian tourists
A MIGHTY tornado ran through southern Spain last week, causing damage to the tune of 40 million euros. The huge swirl ripped through greenhouses and crops in the Almerian towns of Ejido and El Alquian, devastating some 150 hectares. Many farmers had not started harvesting, so their economic losses will be greater, and one lamented: “All life… fighting for nothing.” A startling video shows how plastic sheets were torn from structures, and how several pieces of metal littered the ground as neighbours screamed. One man, while recording the scene on his mobile, shouted: “Look, look, look, look… it’s taking everything!”
ETA weapon cache found
A WEAPONS cache, thought to have been hidden by Basque terrorist group ETA, has been uncovered in a forest near Bayonne, say French police. A walker stumbled on the arms while searching the area with a metal detector. He dug up two plastic boxes containing detonators and explosives, as well as road maps bearing the ETA symbol, according to a local French radio station. Once informed, police cordoned off the area, and an investigation was launched by the anti-terrorism bureau in Paris. The spot is located about 30km from Bayonne, where ETA staged a hand-over of weapons in April last year. The group claimed that they had given up all their weapons in a move towards establishing peace, and former French President François Hollande called it “a decisive step towards the end of Basque separatist terrorism”.
Bad weather halts Armas
THE Armas shipping company was forced to cancel departures to and from Gran Canaria and Tenerife on Tuesday, because of the dreadful weather. The affected routes were an 11am departure from the Gran Canaria’s Las Palmas port to the Santa Cruz port in Tenerife, as well as the scheduled 3.45pm return journey.
Prison for sex offender
SAMUEL Herrera Santana (pictured), a Gran Canaria resident from El Tablero, has been sentenced to six years in prison for having sexually-assaulted a 15-year-old girl on a remote industrial site. It happened more than five years ago, and, at his trial, Samuel claimed that the girl had consented to sexual relations, after a discussion, via WhatsApp. The victim said she had been lured into the industrial building, and, while the aggressor was trying to kiss her, she attempted to flee. But she fell to the floor after tripping over, and that, she added, was when the accused took advantage of the situation, and abused her, sexually.
THE Association of Canarian Tourist Municipalities (AMTC), last Friday outlined their strategy for Madrid’s Fitur, the vital, international Tourism Trade Fair.
It is being held this week, from Wednesday until Sunday. And, for the first time, AMTC has its own stand, and a series of activities, geared towards working with professionals and sector representatives at the Fair. Attending the press conference were Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Arona Mayor José Julián Mena and Guía de Isora Mayor Pedro Martín, along with Ramón Suárez, Tourism Councillor for Gran Canaria’s San Bartolomé de Tirajana, in Las Palmas, and his counterpart, Mogán’s Mencey Navarro. The five AMTC representatives have worked together for several months to prepare the tourism stand, which will reflect the work of the five boroughs, in what is the most important economic sector in the Canaries. The stand reflects modernism, using the latest technological innovations, touchscreen presentations, video presentations and meeting zones for each borough. There is also a space reserved for visiting press and sector agents, as well as work space for representatives from each borough.
As Association President Rodríguez Fraga said, they had been “preparing for one of the most important tourism fairs in the world”. Last year, Adeje and Arona shared the “Tenerife Sur” stand at the Fair, recording 10,000 direct visits and 40,000 indirect contacts, as well as 150 concrete actions with professionals. The figures give an idea of the volume of work which could be generated at this year’s stand, aimed at the five boroughs. Arona Mayor Mena said: “This, in turn, can improve competition, which is vital for the development of our tourism strategy in the Canaries. And we are just as aware of quality as we are of quantity. If our boroughs benefit, so does Tenerife, the Canary Islands and Spain.” The Association has three official events in Fitur: a general presentation of their strategy, a general meeting, and a meeting with other Canarian representatives who wished to attend. Each of the five boroughs will also have been engaged in individual activities, meeting with sector professionals and the press, as well as travel agencies, etc. “We are not going to Fitur simply to hand out leaflets or gifts,” said Guía de Isora Mayor Pedro Martín. “Our presence there, with this stand and our activities, is designed to create new contacts, meet professionals and those who have influence in our destinations, because, as
well as our identification as Canarian resorts, we also have our individual identities. “We are not interested in breaching unity, but people have to understand that unity isn’t the same as uniformity.” Adeje Mayor Rodríguez Fraga added that each destination had a duty to explain and outline its individual offer, and its particular attractions. Mogán Councillor Mencey Navarro said that a debate about unified representation had been opened up, creating a high level of expectation. “That’s because we have an important part to play, and something to say, within the tourism industry,” he added. “And this is a way of measuring the potential of the five boroughs we are representing here.” All the representatives made it clear that they were not seeking confrontation with the bodies which represent tourism at insular and regional levels. “This is not about political allegiances,” said San Bartolomé Councillor Ramón Suárez. “We all have one goal, which is to improve our destination and the Canary Islands in general. And that is the same goal as the Spanish Association of Tourism Municipalities.” The five member boroughs represent 6% of the tourist trade nationally, with a combined total of 57 million overnight-stays per year, 53% of the Canarian tourism spend and 6.8 million tourists.

Horses tackle flaming hell - every year
THICK smoke fills the cobbled streets of San Bartolome de Pinares, as the clip-clop of galloping hooves edges ever closer to a bonfire, crackling nearby. Suddenly, a horse and its rider burst through the flames, as the mysterious, age-old festival of Las Luminarias kicks off in this village, nestled deep in snow-capped mountains near Madrid. Some 130 horses follow suit, ridden by young and old alike, with couples, parents and children taking part in the annual ritual, which, say village historians, is unique in Spain. The strange event may have originated as a pagan ritual, practised by the Celts, when they occupied the Castilla y Leon area more than 1,000 BC, says Salvador Saez, a 64-year-old retired teacher from the village, who has researched the festival. Fire, the great purifier, he adds, was thought to protect animals from diseases, and give their riders fertility. And the ritual could have been “Christianised” later by the Catholic Church. But there are no written records, and villagers have simply replicated the same annual routine faithfully, for centuries. “We’ve all asked the question of where it originates from, of our parents and grandparents, and the response has always been, ‘since forever’,” says Saez. “No one
has been able to give a concrete response.” So every year, on the evening of 16th January, the 600-strong village fills with smoke as residents light bonfires at regular intervals, warming cold onlookers, but also forcing them to cover their mouths and noses. Riders from the village and neighbouring areas assemble at 9pm, and set off parading around the streets, led by two walking locals, playing the drums and dulzaina, a Spanish oboe-like instrument. They also clear the fires, one by one, and down local wine or soft drinks in the process. The final stretch on the main Road of the Virgin sees the more foolhardy careering up, their horses leaping over the flames or passing next to them, narrowly missing, and, at times, hitting people as the crowds press together to watch. After the ceremony, residents cook meat on the remains of the blazes before partying the night away. The bonfires are lit again the next day to smoke up the streets, in honour of Saint Anthony, protector of animals. Residents in San Bartolome de Pinares insist that no horse is forced to go through the fire. They add that all the animals belong to people who love and tend to them all year… and would never put them in any danger. “There hasn’t ever been an accident, and no burns,” says Jose Luis Escapez, 57, one of this year’s organisers.

Organ donors are on the rise
A TOTAL of 93 organ donations, which were made in the Canary Islands last year, saved the lives of 193 people. In addition, 169 organ transplants were performed in hospitals across the Canaries, of which 123 were kidneys, 45 livers and one pancreas. Bone-marrow donations totalled 1,567, which was an all-time high. And in the archipelago’s public hospitals, there were
active transplants of bone-marrow, cornea, bone and amniotic membrane. There was also a continued organ-donation increase from people who had passed away, but were kept breathing artificially on respiratory machines. Some 17 donations were made in this manner, a 50% rise on 2016, A donor card is not a legal document, so it is important that people who wish to donate their organs make sure that family and friends are aware.
Double drowning disaster TWO men, in a party of Lithuanians, drowned off the Tenerife coast last Saturday afternoon, following a desperate rescue attempt by emergency helicopters. The choppers, accompanied by ambulances and the fire-service, were called at around 1.40pm to La Charca de La Laja, in the Santa Cruz municipality of San Juan de la Rambla, after reports of one person struggling in the sea. Other members of the Lithuanian group attempted to help their friend, but, sadly, a second man also lost his life after a struggle with the fierce currents.
Another male, 36, and a 37-year-old woman, were taken to hospital suffering severe hypothermia. The tragedies followed poor-weather warnings, including high winds and rough seas, which had been issued across the archipelago.

Spain such a big hit with tourists, the world over!
SPAIN is expected to be named the world’s secondmost-popular tourist destination, according to the United Nations. The country seems set to replace the United States in second place, behind leaders France. The UN’s World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) says the final count will be published in the Spring, but it anticipates that Spain’s estimated 82 million visitors will be decisive. In 2016, Spain welcomed 75.3 million visitors, Britain providing 17.8m of them. That put the country just behind the US, who recorded 75.6m, while France’s 82.6m total put them in the top slot, with plenty to spare. But on international tourism earnings, France was way behind the US, which saw off Spain easily. The UNWTO said that Europe saw an 8% increase in international arrivals
on last year, primarily from tourism to the Mediterranean. There was a 13% growth in Southern and Mediterranean Europe, the Organisation labelling the figures “extraordinary”. Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy claimed last week that tourism numbers had soared, adding that wages in the tourism industry had also grown significantly. But the country as a whole is not necessarily celebrating the arrival of more tourists. Tensions in Barcelona have been rising for years, regarding the impact of tourism on the city. And anti-tourism demonstrations, which highlighted its impact on the local housing market, among other things, were some of most notorious staged around Europe last year. Also, the tyres of rental bikes and tour buses were, reportedly, slashed in the city. Mallorca and San Sebastian are some of the other prominent Spanish locations for anti-tourism
protests. Yet this does not appear to have deterred tourists from coming to Spain. Neither do security fears, following Barcelona’s terror attack last August, or the Catalan crisis, though this was blamed for a drop in visitor numbers to the region. International tourism, worldwide, grew by 7% to reach a total of 1.3 billion, according to the UNWTO. Zurab Pololikashvili, the Organisation’s SecretaryGeneral, said: “International travel continues to grow strongly, consolidating the tourism sector as a key driver in economic development. “As the third export sector in the world, tourism is essential for job creation, as well as the prosperity of communities around the world. “But as we continue to grow, we must work closer together to ensure this growth benefits every member of every host community.”

Ireland-Spain
to have a ferry link

Hash stash found
A NARCOTICS team from the National Police have seized more than a quarter of a ton of hashish, which was hidden in a Los Cristianos lock-up. Information on its whereabouts was given to officials by a prison inmate, who spilled the beans to help with his defence.
The seizure took place on 4th January, after a court order was issued for the search for the substance. In total, the hash weighed 258kgs, and, as well as this huge amount, the police also discovered a kilo of white powdery substance, which, presumably, was used to cut cocaine.
Van drama a mystery
IRELAND and Spain are set to be connected by a direct passenger ferry service for the first time. And freight companies are hoping the new routes can also ease post-Brexit trade fears. Brittany Ferries will sail from Cork to Santander and back, twice a week, on a boat with a 50-50 split between freight and passengers, with space for around 500 passengers and 200 cars. The “no-frills, Spanish theme” crossings are expected to take 26 hours, and depart on Wednesdays and Fridays (returning on Thursdays and Saturdays). Prices are yet to be announced. Sales are expected to begin at the end of the month, before services set sail at the back end of April, according to the company. And the link will, reportedly, run between April and November. Santander, in Northern Spain, is a short drive from
Bilbao and San-Sebastian, at the tip of the country, near the French border. The newly-chartered Connemara ship will also serve Cork to Roscoff, France, with a weekly return trip. The company say passengers will have access to a small shop, café-bar and passenger lounges, and the ship will be dog-friendly. Its inclusion of freight means that the Spanish can bypass Britain when transporting goods between the two countries, which could be beneficial, following Brexit. There are fears that the British ports could be hit by severe customs queues, following the country’s March 2019 withdrawal from the European Union. Hugh Bruton, General Manager of Brittany Ferries Ireland, said: “This is a significant move for Brittany Ferries, offering haulage companies a direct route to Spain, and passengers a far greater range of holiday options from Cork. “As a destination, so-called “green” Spain promises visitors a wealth of opportunities. It hosts sweeping, sandy beaches and snow-
covered mountains, just an hour from the port. It provides fabulous food, and offers visitors a welcome as warm as the Spanish will receive when they join us in Ireland.” Captain Michael McCarthy, Commercial Manager at the Port of Cork, added: “We are delighted that our longterm customer, Brittany Ferries, has committed to this new service, which will see an increase in tourism and freight. “The option for freight carriers to bypass the UK will be seen as very attractive, as Brexit uncertainty continues. We have no doubt that both exporters and importers will make this a viable service.” Chief Executive Christophe Mathieu said: “Green Spain promises visitors a wealth of opportunities, whether they travel with us from the UK, or Ireland. “However, this new route will also present more options to freight companies operating throughout Ireland, Spain, Portugal and southern France.” Last year, according to reports, there were two million visits by the Irish to Spain.
A VAN, parked up on waste ground in Lanzarote’s Puerto Calero, slipped down a slope, suddenly, and crashed into the sea. It happened at around 8.30am. Local police and the fire services were called, but, with no passengers inside the vehicle, they had no reason to get involved. But a question mark still hangs over the incident.
Forgetful old man hit by smoke-filled lungs A PENSIONER, aged 75, was admitted to hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, suffering severe smoke inhalation at his Santa Cruz home. His neighbours called the Emergency Services at around 4.20am, because
smoke was seeping out of the windows. Firemen inspecting the property discovered that the old man had forgotten a frying pan he’d been using, and it was still on the heat. The firemen opened windows to ventilate the area, while an ambulance transferred the man to Candeleria Hospital, where he was kept in for observation.

Ryanair’s cabin-luggage fee could rebound on company A SPANISH airtransport association has urged travellers to shun Ryanair, following its introduction on Monday of a £5 levy on some cabin luggage.
The Irish company’s new rule states that passengers who opt to take two items of hand-luggage into the cabin, as had always been the case, will now have to put the heavier one in the hold if they disagree with what it calls a “Priority Boarding” fee. Travellers believe it is just a way for the low-cost airline to “loot” them, while ASETRA (Spanish Association of Users, Employers and Professionals of Air Transport) has called for the boycott. Previously, passengers could take on board, free, a suitcase with dimensions of no more than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, and weighing a maximum 20kgs. They could also have a small bag measuring 35cm x 20cm x 20cm (a handbag or laptop, say). But the change no longer
applies to the larger case, which must go in the hold, unless the “Priority Boarding” fee is paid. ASETRA has also urged travellers to and from Spain to choose a different airline, in protest. An Association spokesman said: “This new condition violates the rights of passengers, at a time when Ryanair enjoys a dominant position in the Spanish airtransport market. “This prevents users from selecting other airlines in some routes exclusive to Ryanair, and, thus, limits their ability to choose.” The Association also feels that Ryanair’s new rule
could be challenged in the European courts, because of a “change of contract in the agreed conditions”. This applies to passengers who bought their tickets before the changes were announced, initially, last September. Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs said: “Since we announced this new policy, we have had a positive reception from our customers. “This new policy is fair. It will speed up boarding, and will eliminate any risk of Ryanair flights being delayed because of too many bags being brought on board. “The new rules are based
on lower checked-bag fees and bigger bag allowances, which will cost Ryanair up to 50m euros per annum, so we hope our customers will enjoy and welcome them.” He added: “Ryanair customers can still bring one, free, carry-on bag. But because of our heavilybooked flights (94% load factors), we don’t have space on board for that many wheelie bags. “That is why we are asking non-priority customers to put their bigger bag in the hold, free of charge, to eliminate boarding delays and improve our industry-leading, on-time departures. “Ryanair has already introduced reduced, checkedbag fees (from £35 to £25) and increased checkin bag weights (from 15kg to 20kg) to encourage more customers to check-in bags and reduce the number of people with two bags at the boarding gates.” But although the company lumps euros and pounds together when pricing, it also adds that these costs vary, depending on the route and travel dates.
Rescued from the Red Rock
A BRITISH woman, aged 60, suffered severe leg injuries after falling during a hike last Wednesday on El Medano landmark Montaña Roja, known popularly as the Red Rock.
The accident happened just before midday, and Tenerife’s emergency fire services, along with a search-and-rescue team, took part in the rescue. It proved difficult, because the woman couldn’t move because of her leg injuries. Once she was freed and carried down the Red Rock, the hiker was transferred carefully in to the ambulance, and taken to hospital for further treatment.

SOME 51 migrants, escaping from subSaharan Africa, were rescued near the Spanish island of Alboran by the country’s Navy. The group, including eight women and two young children, were spotted by naval personnel, who were sailing an inflatable boat off the island’s coast. They informed the Span-
ish Navy, who then accompanied it to the island’s dock. Support also came from the Navy’s Operations and Surveillance Centre of Maritime Action (COVAM), based in Cartagena. Sailors gave the migrants blankets, water and food on arrival, and they were then taken by the coastguards’ boat to the Almeria port. A similar number of migrants arrived on the same island, a few days earlier.
A FASHION designer, who tried to fly to London from Iceland wearing all his clothes, was said to have been banned from two flights. Both British ways and easyJet vented Ryan Carney liams, who goes by

professional name Ryan Hawaii, from boarding their aircraft… wearing eight pairs of trousers and 10 shirts! The designer, trying to avoid paying to check in a suitcase, was arrested on 10th January after refusing to leave the BA check-in desk at Keflavik Airport. He was freed after giving a statement to the
police, said The Times, and Williams tweeted: “Being held at Iceland Keflavik airport because I had no baggage. Put all the clothes on, and they still won’t let me on. Racial profiling? Or...” He included a video of himself, asking why he could not board, and a staff member replying: “Do we need to call the police?”

BARS and cafés in Andalucía are now required by law to give customers free drinking water if requested. It is part of the regional government’s drive to improve the population’s health, and the proprietors must provide a jug and glasses without charge, although the contents may be tap water instead of bottled, if the former is drinkable. Free water must also be available in vending machines, set up in public places, or via fountains or other installations not more than two metres away. Schools, or anywhere children may be gathered, such as parks, must also have an available supply. Apart from the water issue, restaurants in Andalucia are now required to ensure they provide healthy meals on menus. They must also be willing to offer different portion sizes if requested, while grocery shops and supermarkets have to sell fresh and perishable produce, in different-sized packaging, to reflect “all family sizes”. It is a move aimed mainly at those living alone, who do not want to buy goods in large containers, which, they know, they will never be able to eat before they go off. School canteens must use fresh, seasonal and local produce where possible, and

should base their lunches on the Mediterranean Diet. In addition, children will spend time working on school allotments as part of their curriculum, an they must take part in at least five hours of physical activity a week, within school hours. After-school activities should be based upon sports and exercise as much as possible. Workplaces, with more than 50 employees, will have to
install bicycle parks, and bans on advertising food and drink with high levels of fat, sugar and calories will be brought in shortly, especially those aimed at children under 15. Such advertising must not claim any “sensations of superiority” as a result of their consumption, such as showing an ordinary school kid turning into a superhero, after downing a can of fizzy drink.
And there’s more! Food and drink sold in vending machines and school tuck-shops must not contain more than 200 calories in a single unit, nor exceed a stated maximum level of saturated fat, trans-fatty acids, salt, sugar, caffeine, or other stimulants. In preparing the new consumer law, Andalucía’s regional government brought together committees of parents, teachers, healthworkers and patients, business-owners and professional governing bodies, such as the College of Pharmacists and College of Lawyers. Figures released in the presentation showed that 16.6% of Andalucía’s adult population were clinically obese, as were 15.2% of pregnant women. But children are most at risk, since 23% of Andalucía’s under-18s are obese. And, worryingly, health experts fear these numbers could double by the year 2050.
Traffic-light cameras illegal, says top Court CAMERAS at traffic lights, designed to catch and fine drivers who go through a red light, are “illegal”. And, says the Spanish Supreme Court, any penalties imposed as a result are null and void. The country’s highest court rejected an appeal by Catarroja Council, in the Valencia province, against a verdict from November 2014. It scrapped the Council’s 200-euro fine and loss of four licence points, imposed on a driver who jumped a red light and was caught on camera.
And, as the appeal was unsuccessful, the Catarroja Council has been ordered to pay legal costs, totalling 2,000 euros. The local authority maintained that the original court decision was
“erroneous” and “seriously damaging for the general interest”. But traffic-light cameras are not under State control, because Spanish law does not cover them, make them obligatory or regulate their presence. The Supreme Court judge said these cameras suppose a “lack of legal security” for the public, and did not “carry any guarantees” when taking the photographs. They do not guarantee road-safety, and violate the concept of the driver being “innocent until proven guilty”, says the verdict.
The results of the case were announced by the European Automobile Association (AEA), which has denounced the 100plus fines levied by town councils, based on trafficlight camera footage. Mario Arnaldo, the AEA spokesman, said the Supreme Court decision ratified that of a case in November 2015, when local authorities in San Sebastián, in the Basque Country, appealed a verdict that annulled a fine and loss of licence points, levied on a driver caught on camera jumping a red light.
Another migrant tragedy
L I F E G UA R D S who spotted a boat in the waters close to Lanzarote’s Playa Bastain, in Costa Teguise, on Monday, realised it was an immigrants’ patera and took to their w a t er - s coot er s instinctively. On arrival, they noticed that five of the 27 people aboard were already dead, and another two were floating in the water. The lifeguards soon rescued the pair and took them ashore. But both suffered heart attacks, and could not be saved. After the boat was helped to the shore, the survivors said they had been at sea for two days, after leaving the south of Morocco on Saturday. Guardia Civil officers arrested a man recognised as “The Boss”, who looked suspicious, and was carrying 9,000 Moroccan dirhams. He has since been charged on several counts, including illegal immigration. A Guardia officer also said that two people rescued from the boat were at a hospital in Lanzarote capital Arrecife, suffering from serious pneumonia. The remaining 17 migrants were transferred to Arrecife’s National Police station.

Elliana Shand is “safe and well”
Moroccan women trampled to death TWO Moroccan women, aged around 40, were trampled to death during a “crush” at Spain’s border with their country. The pair were said to have been working as porters, carrying goods into Ceuta, when hundreds of people, trying to enter the enclave, began to congregate at around 5.30am.
Authorities say the “crush” took place on a hill nearest to the Moroccan frontier post of Bab Sebta. That is where authorities separate porters entering Ceuta, from domestic workers going into the city. Porters enter the Spanish territory through the Tarajal II pedestrian crossing point, and other workers use a different crossing. But, since last summer,
women have been allowed to carry goods into Ceuta every Monday and Wednesday, while men have been permitted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. However, long queues of people and vehicles are still reported by Spanish media. Hundreds of people usually wait during the night for a chance to take their goods into Ceuta in the early hours of the morning, when the frontier opens.
A BRITISH girl, aged four, who went missing with her schizophrenic mother last summer, has been found in Alicante, on Spain’s Costa Blanca.
Elliana Shand disappeared with her mum, Jessica Richards, who is in her mid-20s, and High Court judge Mr Justice Hayden said in December that he was “very concerned indeed” for the youngster’s safety. He stressed: “In optimum circumstances,
the mother’s capacity to meet her daughter’s needs was barely satisfactory.” But last Friday, the judge revealed that Elliana had been found, safe and well, by police in Alicante, and was expected back in the UK this week. She had been at the centre of private family court litigation after her mother disappeared from their Essex home during the summer, after Social Services staff at Barking and Dagenham Council had raised concern about the youngster’s welfare.
A grinding of teeth at this dental clinic
THE owners of a dental clinic in Valencia were left redfaced after a video display in their front window was hacked to show porn. The incident happened in Alacuás, a Valencian town, and images have since gone viral on YouTube and Twitter. The owners have since apologised “for
any offence caused by the video”, and are working to clarify the facts. They will also try to prevent their network from being hacked again. Those responsible for the public porn show are believed to have used an app on a mobile phone to control the content appearing on the Smart TV screen.

Dead wife’s husband arrested… for fraud! THE husband of a British woman, found dead in Marbella, was arrested this week in connection with a six-figure fraud.
Paul Muldoon, 33, faces extradition over an alleged scam, in which pensioners were conned into investing in dodgy “green energy bundles”. His wife’s body was found on a beach last Sunday, after Muldoon had been arrested on New Year’s Day at their penthouse flat. It followed allegations of domestic abuse, after neighbours heard shouting and screaming. But he was released by a judge when 35-year-old Mrs Muldoon, who failed to attend a hearing to give evidence against him, could not be traced. Officials confirmed that Essex-born Muldoon was still in custody when his wife went missing. But even before his arrest, Muldoon was one of the country’s most-wanted fraudsters.
He had been on the run for at least a year, and was detained by Spanish police after they summoned him to a meeting on Sunday evening. Muldoon faces extradition to England, where detectives want to speak to him about a boilerroom fraud, involving the supposed sale of rare earthmetals five years ago.
For the final time…
He and a gang of accomplices are accused of promising extraordinary returns for investments in rare-metal compounds, used to make LEDs and lasers. The gang occupied a “virtual office” in Canary Wharf, using the Queen’s bank, Coutts, to give their activities a prestigious air. But clients complained that they had been
duped out of huge sums. An 83-year-old widow claimed she handed over £235,000 for precious metals, diamonds and even plots of land in Brazil. Mrs Muldoon, originally from Southend-on-Sea, is believed to have met her husband several years ago, before they embarked on a life of luxury in New York, Los Angeles and Spain. Online photos show them posing against the Manhattan skyline, and Muldoon also appears in a selfie with former England football manager Sam Allardyce. He even posted an image of Michael Douglas as the Wall Street film character Gordon Gekko. The couple, who married in the US, recently settled with her two children, aged eight and 11, in Camino del Pinar, a Marbella area popular with expats. Mrs Muldoon was last seen on 2nd January, less than 24 hours after her husband had been arrested on suspicion of domestic abuse. She spent most of New Year’s Day evening at a
police station, after officers were called by a neighbour. But she declined to press charges, and failed to answer a court summons as part of a swift-justice procedure. Friends circulated messages online, in a bid to trace her, as relatives flew in from Essex to take care of her children. A walker alerted the emergency services after finding a body on Oasis Beach on Sunday morning. Sources told local media that they recognised her from photos, and that she was wearing the same clothes as when they last saw her. But there were “no signs of external violence”. It was confirmed by National Police sources that Muldoon had been detained on a European Arrest Warrant. According to Crimestoppers, he was first held by British police in 2013, but was released because of the inquiry’s “complexity”. It added that he received a summons last year, but “has so far failed to appear” at several court hearings.
Brits might be quizzed over death-fall woman THE five British men in a Benidorm hotel room, from which Kirsty Maxwell fell to her death last year, may be ordered to return to Spain.
AT last! A Romanian fugitive, who had been arrested 88 times in Spain, was extradited from Spain, finally, after being found in Almeria.
The 30-year-old, who had been on the run for six years, was caught by the International Fugitive Tracing Group last week, and is now back in his native country. Warrants had been issued by courts in El Ejido, Vera
and Cartagena, following his numerous arrests for theft, injury and fraud. In addition to the Spanish summons, the villain also had a European Arrest Warrant issued against him in October, 2011. The warrant came as a result of the man and a minor breaking into a building in Vaslui, Romania, and stealing a vacuum cleaner, electric heater and toaster, along with 61 litres of wine. He will now be charged with robbery by force, and faces up to four years in prison if found guilty.
They claim they stood by idly as the 27-year-old plunged to her death after she had, reportedly, walked into their room by mistake. Kirsty’s legal team have asked the investigating judge to allow a reconstruction of the events leading up to her death. And that would require the five, still under investigation, to return to Benidorm to take part. In a written document submitted to the court, lawyer Luis Miguel Zumaquero claims Mrs Maxwell had been fleeing from a “sexual attack”. And, after battling to be allowed to reveal postmortem examination re-
ports, he also demands to know if there had been male DNA, belonging to one of the five men, on the clothes Kirsty was wearing on the fatal night.
Questions have also been asked of the initial police investigation, while reports of initial interviews of hotel staff have been requested.

Spain & Netherlands want ‘soft Brexit’
at currencies direct
THE pound started the New Year on rocky form, thanks to more unsettling political developments and mixed, economic data. GBP/EUR slumped to lows of around 1.1210 euros on two occasions, but also managed to record highs of 1.1350.
Meanwhile, GBP/USD rose from a low of US$1.3461, to hit a post-referendum high of US$1.3809. EUR/ GBP trended between a low of £0.8810 and a high of £0.8920. EUR/USD, meanwhile, has recovered from a low of US$1.1918, to hit a more-than-three-yearhigh of US$1.2288. The pound started 2018 on solid form, even if UK data didn’t. Markit’s UK manufacturing PMI, released on 2nd January, fell further-than-expected to 56.3, while the construction PMI, published on the 3rd, dropped to 52.2, instead of to the predicted 53. Even the better-thanexpected rise in the UK services PMI, released on 4th January, failed to
particularly lift the pound, although, by the first weekend of 2018, Sterling was closer to the week’s highs, than its lows. Last week saw UK politics firmly back in the spotlight. Theresa May reshuffled her Cabinet at the start of the week, but markets weren’t impressed by the lacklustre activity, with key people, such as Boris Johnson, somewhat controversially kept in place. Overall, many commented that the lack of changes illustrated just how weak Theresa May’s position remains, raising questions over her ability to negotiate and implement a Brexit that favours the UK economy.
A slew of data on the 10th failed to overly-strengthen the pound, although the figures were mostly positive; even the tradebalance figures, which showed the deficit widened on the month, revealed a narrowing on the quarter and on the year. GBP raced higher at the end of the week, however, thanks to suggestions that Spain and the Netherlands were in favour of a ‘soft Brexit’, and were planning to lobby other EU nations to agree. The most-impactful data this week was the December consumer price-index figures released on Tuesday. The data was expected to show that, overall, price
growth slowed from 3.1% to 3%, while core-price growth slowed from 2.7% to 2.6%. Given that surging prices are hampering consumers’ ability to spend money, a slowdown in inflation may be welcomed by the markets. Wednesday’s speech from Bank of England (BoE) official Michael Saunders could cause some turbulence, as he is one of most-hawkish members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), and so may offer markets a reason to be upbeat about the interest-rate outlook. Returning to the importance of consumption for the UK economy, Friday’s December retail-sales figures could weaken the
pound, considering a large decline is predicted, monthon-month. Tuesday 23rd will bring the latest round of government-borrowing figures, and industry data from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Wednesday’s average-earnings figures could give the pound a boost, if they show an acceleration in pay growth, especially if tomorrow’s inflation data does slow as expected, as both these things combined will help improve the outlook for consumer spending. Next week ends with the release of the UK’s fourthquarter GDP figures, giving markets a chance to reflect upon the impact of Brexit, in the first, full calendar year since the referendum. Hard Sun BBC1, 21.30
Renko (Agyness Deyn) investigates evidence uncovered by DCS Roland Bell (Derek Riddell) that suggests both Hicks (Jim Sturgess) and Butler (Aisling Bea) were corrupt. A disillusioned former aid worker who believes the truth about Hard Sun wants to challenge God into revealing himself by targeting victims who help others. The spree killer confesses his sins to his Priest, Father Dennis (Dermot Crowley), but the sanctity of the confessional complicates Hicks and Renko’s investigation. After his visit from Grace (Nikki AmukaBird), Daniel (Jojo Macari, pictured) asks Renko what Hard Sun is and wants to know the truth about his father. Grace makes Hicks an offer.

Call The Midwife
Sunday 21st January, BBC1, 20.00
The Big Freeze continues, with scheduled power cuts and more blizzards. The departure of Barbara prompts Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) to recruit a new midwife, Lucille Anderson (Leonie Elliott). Owing to the snow, Lucille is two days late and her start is bumpy when she falls ill. Lucille is called out from her sick bed to assist Trixie with a breech birth. Nadine Mulvaney (Tamla Kari), a single mother and exotic dancer in Soho, plans to give the baby up for adoption. But, Trixie is concerned that Nadine’s Rhesus Negative blood type might cause problems for baby. Meanwhile, Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) and Dr Turner (Stephen McGann) are caring for Ruth Gelin (Julie Legrand), an elderly Jewish woman suffering from bowel cancer. Ruth and her husband Arnold (Allan Corduner) are facing eviction from their home of several decades. The council have started to demolish their street as part of the slum clearance. Nurse Crane (Linda Bassett) must convince the prickly Sergeant Woolf (Trevor Cooper) to delay the demolition until after Ruth passes away. Shelagh (Laura Main) wants to return to work and contemplates having an Au Pair. An apprehensive Trixie decides to take her relationship with Christopher (Jack Hawkins) to the next level while Sister Winifred (Victoria Yeates) is nervous as her driving test approaches.

Dr Xand van Tulleken and dietician Hala El-Shafie ask ordinary Brits to road test some of the most popular and talked about diets out there and give viewers the lowdown on how these diets performed for them. Café cook Stacie Stewart helps the volunteers to turn their diets into delicious dishes. This time, supermarket employee Rebecca and charity worker Alisha from London want to ditch their bikini bulges for a family holiday abroad. Gary and Connor want to look svelte for Gary’s upcoming graduation, plus Elaine and Sue from Essex want to trim down for a work reunion in four months’ time. Xand also investigates electro muscle stimulation for weight loss and tries to get rid of dangerous visceral fat clinging onto his organs.

Every Rembrandt exhibition is eagerly anticipated, but a once-in-a-lifetime show at London’s National Gallery and Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum that took 15 years to prepare was
remarkable. Given exclusive, privileged access to both galleries, the film documents this landmark exhibition whilst interweaving Rembrandt’s life story with behind-the-scenes preparations at these world famous institutions. The exhibition focused on the highlights from the final years of Rembrandt’s life, commonly thought to be his finest years. The masterpieces he produced during this period could be called his defining works, with each piece so soulful and honest that they helped sculpt our idea of Rembrandt as a man and as an artist. This film explores each of the exhibition’s key works, through contributions from specially invited contributors including curators and leading art historians. For many, Rembrandt is the greatest artist that ever lived and this film seeks to explore the truth about the man behind the legend.

Carnival 2018: Opening Parade
The queen’s costume, her maids of honour and the Carnival groups take on a whole new level when you see them in the flesh parading down the streets of Santa Cruz. The magic of getting up-close is what the audience experiences when they attend the great Opening Parade of the Carnival. The city’s main streets are closed off for a few hours to host a true spectacle of colour and joy. The parade encompasses the best of what has already happened and what is yet to come at the Carnival. Taking part are the murgas, comparsas, rondallas and music bands, together with the winners of the individual and group costume awards. And behind them are a whole host of carnival-goers dressed in all kinds of wacky outfits, from those thrown together at the last-minute to the most elaborate, ready to face the many nights of festivities ahead. The show gathers people of all ages. Traditionally, children are allowed to put on their costumes in the morning and wear them to school. Plus, in the city itself, most of the schools close early so that the kids can make the most of the festive fun. This shows just how much the city transforms during two weeks, enthralling locals, Islanders and visitors from all over the world.

TributoFest 27.01.2018 The next TributoFest concert will be held a week tomorrow (Saturday, 27th January) at Tenerife Magma, Costa Adeje, featuring headliners Coldplace, the best Coldplay tribute band of all. Ed Sheeran, performed by Stuart Beagley, is also on the bill, as is Charlotte Hopley’s Katy Perry. We caught up with Charlotte, earlier this week.
Charlotte, you’re a firework! S E A S O N E D performer Charlotte, 29, who was born and bred in Solihull, where she still lives, shares some of her colourful background with Canarian Weekly readers, revealing an insight into her global success. CW: How did you start your musical career? CH: I was into music from the age of four, but, as a two-year-old, Mum had a feeling I was going to be an entertainer! I watched recordings of Kylie Minogue all day long, and always knew I wanted to be a singer. Over the years, I fell into doing tributes, and I've performed lots of different acts. I've really enjoyed them all, but you have to concentrate on whoever's in the charts, at any given time. I've performed as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Lady Gaga, but I really like singing Katy's songs. CW: Where else have you performed? CH: I've been all round the world with this act, including Indonesia, Dubai and Bahrain. Three quarters of my work is in the UK, and the rest abroad. I really love travelling. CW: Have you met Katy? CH: No, but I've always wanted to! CW: What's your favourite Katy song? CH: Firework. CW: What about your costumes? CH: They're hand-made with a lot of intricate detail, to replicate what you see on Katy's tours. They are quite large, and there are quite a few costume changes, so I always have loads of luggage! CW: Have you performed at any other tribute concerts? CH: I've sung at so many, all over the world, during a 15-year period. I'm really looking forward to coming to Tenerife - it should be interesting! I did the Lanzarote Gay Pride Festivals, too. CW: Is it difficult to be like Katy? CH: No, not at all. I can pick things up easily, because I'm a performer, so I don't feel
as though I have to spend hours practising. Obviously, it's important to do some research on an artist, but, because I've been singing
for years on stage, it comes naturally to me. And there are more concerts to come … TributoFest is bringing some
of the world's leading bands to Tenerife in a series of concerts, enabling fans to spend a night in the Magma, with three of their favourites each
time. So, enjoy a full concert experience, comparable with watching the originals … and, for the first time, you can bring the kids!
Tickets are available for adults, from 30 euros, and for juniors (age 7-17), just 20 euros. Go to www.tenerifemagma.com or www.tributofest.com

New Year, new point of view!
On the fringe hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
THEY can disguise a multitude of sins, open the eyes and dramatically change face shapes. Fringes are always on trend. It doesn’t matter what face shape you have, because there’s one to suit nearly everybody. If you have a fuller forehead, then your best option is a side fringe, or a full one. This will off-set your face shape, and minimalise squareness. If you have a long face, then a forehead-sweeping one is best. It will give your face a more-
asymmetric look, and take away the longness of, possibly, your neck, cheekbones and forehead. Those with smaller foreheads should rarely opt for full fringes, because they could drown the face. Instead, go for a finer, side fringe, to open up the face. It’s rarely that a fringe doesn’t suit most face
shapes; just don’t go for too short, or too long, either. Keep up to a full fringe with regular cuts, and don’t let a side fringe get so long you end up tucking it behind your ear. Fringes are supposed to “add” something to your haircut, so, if you do opt for one, make sure yours is going to do the very best for your face shape.
It’s a wrap...
By Carl pattison
WE don’t suffer seasons too much, here in Tenerife, but there are times you do need to wrap up a little more. This season’s jackets see luxury fabrics from leather and fur to suede (all faux of course) and velvet texture. Look for waist-skimming box jackets, and kneelength, wrap-over coats. Detailing is the key; keep your eye out for studding and metal trim, stoneembellished collars and military buttons. Fake fur is every-
where, especially on cuffs and collars. When it comes to fur, the longer the better, to give you a look of opulence. Keep to classic shapes,
and your jacket will last you a few seasons. There’s always a reason to throw on a jacket, so make sure yours is right on trend.
NEW Year is a great time to make some changes in your home, because you may be open to new ideas, and full of motivation. Many people buying in Spain will purchase a property mainly for holidays or temporary living, so these are likely to be smaller than the type of house you might have back home. So, it’s essential to make the bestpossible use of all the available space you do have. There are certain decorating tips you can use for smaller rooms that will make spaces seem bigger. Using paler colours for the walls, and for the major parts of the furniture, such as the sofa, will give the room an airy, light feel, without being boring. To avoid it being too monochrome, add pops of colour with energetic prints, or a splash of colour in a picture to draw
the eye without overpowering. Stay away from large areas of solid colour, such as painting the walls in darker colours, as this will draw them in, making rooms look smaller. Use different textures, such as rugs, to strategically mark out zones of use. If you have a combined lounge and dining area, a rug under the dining table and chairs will delineate that section from the rest of the room. Try to find furniture that is dual purpose. For example, a sofa bed is a great example of how to get the most out of your property, and, nowadays, they are comfortable, as well as useful, for guests. Consider using fabric cubes that can be used as a footstool on a day-to-day basis, and provide extra seating when friends call round. Perhaps your dining table can double as a desk, so that you need less furniture. Hang curtains as high up as possible, to draw the eye upwards.
Reflective surfaces, such as mirrors, metallic picture frames and shiny furniture, will add light by bouncing it around the room. Position a mirror opposite a window, to give the impression of another window, or use mirrors in alcoves to give added depth. Placing a mirror behind a wall fitting will double the amount of light projected into the room. By using shelving vertically, taking it up to the ceiling, you can achieve the same amount of storage in a narrower unit, without occupying all the wall space, horizontally. Tackle clutter, in areas such as bathrooms, by using colourful containers, baskets or boxes that tone with your colour scheme, and keep the day-today detritus of daily life out of sight. Hallways are another place where it’s easy to amass lots of “bits”, so look for a way to store shoes, keys and the like, in a designated place that looks the part. Use pale colours in the bedroom so that the room looks bigger, and add interest by layering with some cushions and runners, and perhaps bedside rugs in a toning colour. A mirror is essential in the bedroom, but place it to good advantage, so that it is working for your scheme, as well. An interior designer can help you decorate your property, to make the best of it, regardless of size. For this service, and all items mentioned, please contact Deco Nuevo on 922 789729.

Restaurant review: Lagarto, La Caleta
A dining experience that’s special for all
By Tara Scarlata VENTURE brings you the latest addition to their family, the Lagarto International Restaurant and Cocktail Bar.
Nestled in the heart of La Caleta, with views of the ocean, this modern, trendy, family-friendly restaurant offers inspirational cuisine from all over the world, as well as a mouth-watering cocktail menu, presented in a unique and surprising way. Lagarto is about making a dining experience that is
special for everyone. The kids’ menu is packed full of great dishes that are all made 100% fresh, in-house, and there is a choice of nonalcoholic cocktails to have fun with. There is a great selection of dishes that will suit anyone’s taste buds on the main menu, and a lunchtime menu for light, healthy, tasty dishes. When you arrive, you can instantly see the attention to detail in the decor. The same elements have been used in the floor, the walls, the open-plan kitchen and even into the menus, creating a good flow throughout. There is a very open-plan feel, with glass doors opening up onto an outside terrace,
and you can see right from the chefs in the kitchen to the magic happening in the bar, and out to the Atlantic. We arrived for a late lunch, after a hectic morning for Jenny on the Oasis Fm breakfast show, so it was nice to sit down and be treated to a couple of cocktails from the amazingly-orchestrated menu. The cocktails here were something special; to get flavours of Asian gin, cherry and ginger served in a noodle box with spicy dried noodles on it, just puts a huge smile on your face. The cocktail menu was like no other I have seen before. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but from cocktails
served in teapots, to ones with candyfloss on the side, you will want to try them all! It was nice to have the choice of the light lunch menu, or dishes from the evening menu. The Lebanese Haloumi Man’oushe Flatbread was fluffy and light on the inside, crisp on the outside, and topped with sweet tomatoes that married perfectly with the basil pesto and Haloumi. The Tuna Tataki was the standout dish for me. It looked like a piece of art seared fresh tuna, served on balsamic strawberries, topped with a wasabiand-lime mayonnaise, and finished off with a ginger sorbet.
Every element of this dish was prepared perfectly, but put them all together and the flavours danced in your mouth, with every ingredient complementing each other, and building layers of flavour. The wasabi, balsamic and ginger are subtle so don’t overpower each other, and they work in harmony to make one of the best dishes I have eaten in a restaurant in Tenerife, or the UK. Something to note is the freshness of the ingredients used at Lagarto. Every single dish we had was of the highest quality, and you could see that the chef was proud to show off his skills, using produce he believed in.

Lagarto, where attention to detail is second to none. Avenida Las Gaviotas, La Caleta, Adeje
A quick look at the wine list brought a nice surprise, with a good selection of local Canarian white and red wine, and an extensive, international selection. For the main I had a ricotta, goats’ cheese and spinach ravioli, topped with pear, pesto and walnuts, which was very tasty. The pasta was cooked to perfection, and the flavours of the slightly-sour goats’ cheese with the strong parmesan, the deep pesto and the sweetness of the pear worked well together. The walnuts added an extra dimension in flavour and texture, to finish off the dish perfectly. All the dishes we had eaten so far were off the main menu, so we also had the chicken Mexican Tacos from the exclusive, lunch menu. We were served three, goodsized tacos, with crispycoated chicken, peppers, chipotle sauce, red cabbage, guacamole and crème fraîche. The chicken was cooked well, and the accompanying
sauces gave a nice smokey heat that wasn’t too intense or overpowering, and the flavours of the other sauces were very refreshing. It was a perfect lunchtime dish
that was light, yet fulfilling and tasty. As we chatted away, we reflected on what a great feel and atmosphere there was in the restaurant, with the
subtle background music and very comfortable seats. Lagarto isn’t just all about the food; there is a separate, seated bar area for predinner drinks, a perfect
place to meet friends and family before dinner. We couldn’t leave without sampling a bit of the dessert menu. As we were both quite full, we thought that one to share would be enough. If any of you know the Queen of Breakfast on Oasis Fm, she is quite partial to a bit of chocolate. The chocolate-and-orange cheesecake hit the spot with a deep, rich filling on a biscuit base, accompanied by a chocolate crumb and a mandarin sorbet that was full of flavour; totally indulgent, but totally worth it. Lagarto is a restaurant which encompasses everything. If you want a leisurely lunch out with friends, a romantic meal for two, a family dinner, a few jaw-dropping cocktails or a great celebration, they seem to have a way to make it all work. They have, very cleverly, created a perfect harmony with their food, flavours, drinks and environment, to create an absolutely unique place in Tenerife.

GIVING a kitten, cat, puppy or dog a new home is one of the most exciting and rewarding commitments you can make, and has positive benefits for every member of the family. Slip-sliding in wash-out Real Zaragoza 1 CD Tenerife 0 By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
RAIN of biblical proportions cascaded down on Tenerife’s setback, the quality of passing making all the difference between the two sides.
Tenerife hit too many aimless balls, while Zaragoza seemed to find their team mates with ease. The only goal, just six minutes into the game, was the end result of some slick passing, with Guti cutting through the Tenerife defence to set up Pombo to score. Suspensions and injuries ravaged the Tenerife squad, but they put out a strong, balanced line-up, with Suso and Juan Carlos Real taking the wings, and Juan Villar as the central attacker. Carlos Ruiz was replaced
as central defender by Alberto, who didn’t have the best of games. But Aveldano, alongside him, made a well-timed intervention to cut out a Zaragoza raid just after the kick-off. Iglesias, the main home striker, was like a wild ani-
mal… strong, awkward, and brimming over with sly digs and crunching tackles. If only Tenerife could find a striker like that! Aveldano and Iglesias were the best of enemies from the start, and the home forward hacked Aveldano
Women’s football
Rayo’s are well stung Granadilla Tenerife 3 Rayo Vallecano 1
GREAT performances have become the trademark of Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife, but they excelled themselves by turning a one-goal deficit into a home win over Rayo Vallecano, in the final five minutes of their match at San Isidro. The visitors took an 18thminute lead after Sheila fed the ball to Natalia to score. But Granadilla were unlucky not to level soon after, when Patri Gavira saw her shot hit a post. In the second half, Pili
Gonzalez made a great save from Natalia, but, although they kept plugging away, it looked ominous for the whiteand-blues, when they were still behind after 85 minutes. What followed was a testament to their dedication and character. Firstly, Patri Gavira tied the score with a well-directed header, and Maria Jose Perez then pulled Granadilla ahead, when she finished off a good move from Ange Koko. And, in the final minute,
Koko showed she can finish as well as create goals to secure a remarkable success. The win takes Granadilla to fifth in Spain’s elite league, and their players are making a big impact. Maria Jose Perez is top scorer for the league with eight goals, and Pili Gonzalez has conceded fewer goals than any other keeper in the league. The ladies get a welldeserved weekend off, but they will then be fired up to keep improving their standing.
down twice without any punishment. The Tenerife defender, who fell awkwardly the second time, went off with a shoulder injury after just 15 minutes. Jorge Saenz was the natural replacement from the bench, with speculation swirling about him making a 3.5m-euro exit during the January transfer window. But it was good to see him back in action, after being ignored completely for the previous game. Aitor Sanz had a good opening but hit a poor, speculative shot straight at home keeper Alvarez, while Zaragoza were taking a more direct approach at the other end. Febas rode three weak tackles as he threatened to carve out another goal, but the move came to nothing. Tenerife just couldn’t find any rhythm, yet Villar thought he had scored, only for a late offside call to rule it out. The number of repetitive injuries suffered by the Tenerife squad is a cause for concern, and Villar, who has had a stop-go season, had to be replaced with Malbasic on the half-hour. Coach Pep Marti was soaked and frustrated, and a booking for comments made to the ref did little to brighten his outlook. Bryan Acosta made the home keeper squirm just before the break, hitting a long-range free-kick which only just cleared the bar. Malbasic had his golden chance soon after the restart, Acosta playing the ball out to him on the left.
But he rushed his shot and missed the target. Tenerife were trying to up the pace, and Luis Perez began pushing forward more from his right-back slot, with some success. But it could have got worse because Zaragoza were awarded a penalty for a challenge on Iglesias, whose spot-kick hit the post. There was another letoff when Ros and Pombo combined. Keeper Dani was stranded on one side of the goal, only for a welltimed, headed clearance from Camille to keep the score down. Suso was not best pleased when the ref adjudged his goal shot to be offside. It was a much closer call than that of Villar’s, and added to the feeling that the ref was blinkered in favour of Zaragoza. Malbasic, who has been a big let-down since arriving in the summer, was miles offside when a Tenerife three-on-two break came to him, and he was relieved of the ball easily by keeper Alvarez, a few minutes later. The final gamble was Brian Martin on for Suso, and the young striker soon got a chance. But he rushed his shot, which was too weak to make an impact. On Sunday, Tenerife entertain Barcelona B in the first of successive 7pm home games. But with all the injuries and suspensions, the need for the promised three new recruits is becoming more and more urgent.

No cheers from Rioja

OLD friendships and rivalries were renewed last Saturday, but the ref was the busiest person on the pitch. The first half was goalless, but it still stirred local-derby emotions, and, on the 45-minute mark, Buzanada’s Pepo was sent off for a second booking.
Team coach Willy Barroso, once attached to Marino in the same role, also saw red after sounding off at the ref. The player advantage should have worked to Marino’s advantage, but it didn’t last long! Some 20 minutes into the second half, Marino’s Yassine also had to leave the field
A perfect start for Legends B
By Andy Maughan WHAT a perfect way to start the New Year on Tuesday at home for Legends B, beating Scruffy Boys a whopping 10-2. Five games in, and it’s
3-2 to Legends B. It is looking as though it’s going to be another hard scrap, and then Scruffy Boys concede seven on the bounce. To be fair, all games were close calls, but the spoils go to Legends B on the night. Well done to Colin Baker, who won both his games that night, for Scruffy Boys. In total contrast, Scruffy Macs A team were on sensational form at home to Legends Elite, winning 8-4 on the night. Legends Elite, having been on a five-week winning spree, and claiming 42 of their 60 games played, were no match for the Mighty Scruffy Macs A team who, coin-
after a second yellow card. For all the activity, a 0-0 draw seemed likely, but, with four minutes remaining, Samuel popped up to score the winning goal for the home side. This Sunday at Noon, Marino have a home game against CD Vera, from Puerto de la Cruz.
LOGRONO avenged a 3-2 defeat at Arona Tenerife Sur, early in the season, beating them by three clear sets in La Rioja.
Arona reduced the arrears in the third set to a 26-24 reversal, but the 3-0 defeat was still a big wake-up call. And it doesn’t get any easier for Arona tomorrow (Saturday), because they have a derby clash in the North of Tenerife against Aguere La Laguna. Arona, now into the second half of Spain’s Superliga, will be looking to improve on their fifth position.
It was quite a pounding, as the home side’s first-set 2519 advantage was followed by a 25-13 win in the second set. Some pride was restored as

Palms’ charms pay off PALMS Pool Bar welcomed neighbours Sundowners and recorded a fine 5-3 victory, amid lots of laughter and banter between the teams.
Another close game was played out when The Pub visited old rivals Phoenix Bar. The Pub’s Sam hit a 180, but a strong game from the hosts helped them to a 5-3 win. The Tavern A, entertaining Waterfall, proved too strong for their visitors, and finished the evening with a 6-2 scoreline. The same score was recorded, as Picasso’s stormed to a great win over Emerald Lounge. As always, games between Scruffy Macs and Spearchuckers are really tight, and fine finishing from Rudi (117)
and Rob (114), for the visitors, kept the contest alive into the trebles. But Scruffy’s then held their nerve to win 5-3 in style. Buzzin B’s clash with the Red Devils went to the wire, and a superb 701 match could have gone either way. But B’s prevailed, and 5-3 was the end result in their favour. Bar Leones and Ourplace Breakaways ended up with a 6-2 win for the latter. Sandy’s had an excellent night when they hosted Nutty Nauta, and, thanks to Tommy with a 180, strolled to a 7-1 win. Legends welcomed the young guns from Lady Macs, and eased past them with a 6-2 result, but there will be more to come from the youngsters in future. Marilyn’s A travelled to Clouseau’s, and, again, Ed hit his usual maximum,

Motherwell warm to their winter training
ROCK-HARD pitches and postponed games, together with stay-at-home fans, finally got too much for the Scottish Premiership team, so this season they have brought in a 19-day, midwinter break. Motherwell put the matchfree spell to good use by flying to La Caleta’s Tenerife Top Training centre for a week’s warm-weather workout. Manager Stephen Robinson put his squad, including two January transfer-window signings, through their paces. Striker Curtis Main has joined from Portsmouth on an 18-month deal, while

fellow-forward Nadir Ciftci will add his formidable presence to the team’s attacking strength. Nadir, originally from Turkey, is a Celtic asset, who spent last year on loan at Plymouth in England’s First Division. The two new additions will, hopefully, make up for the sale of free-scoring Louis Moult to Preston North End. Motherwell hope to reap the benefits of the break when they return to league action against Hamilton tomorrow (Saturday), with a view to improving the eighth position they now occupy.
Iberostar bang on target I B E R O S T A R Tenerife, glowing with pride, returned to top form with two hefty victories, and they have also signed a new player to fill an injury gap. Last weekend, they saw off Vitoria’s Baskonia 86-74 at their La Laguna stadium with a solid squad effort. The balance of play swung in the first two quarters 21-13 and 16-27 but settled into a nice flow with scores of 27-17, and 22-17. Tim Abromaitis, who led the charge with 17 points, was well-backed by Mateusz Ponitka and Kositas Vasiliadis, on 16 each. With the league points secured, Tenerife set off for Sicily to play Capo D’Orlando on Tuesday in the European Champions League, and
how they performed! Their huge 106-59 success secured progress to the next stage of the competition, and they won each quarter easily: 21-9, 29-16, 23-20 and 29-14. Kositas Vasiliadis, with 16 points, was on top form, and Davin White (14) was right on his tail. With captain Nico Richotti out for the rest of the season with cruciate-ligament damage, Iberostar moved quickly to sign shooting-
guard Josh Akognon as a replacement. The 31-year-old AmericanNigerian from California, who started out with Washington State University, has vast experience in many countries. His last team were in the Chinese League, and, after passing all medical tests this week, Josh will make his debut on Sunday at home against Madrid’s Estudiantes.
