Drugged-up child-killer is still enjoying freedom Continued from Front She is walking around with her own two children, having been found guilty of reckless driving, and testing positive for alcohol and drugs, after the terrifying incident. No wonder Juan José Hernández González is demanding a prison sentence for the woman, after what happened to his beloved nephew. To make matters even worse, while his family are still in deep mourning for the youngster, she has not even had the decency to contact them with an apology. The horrific saga unfolded at 8.30 one morning, last
October, when Dereck, the family’s youngest child, was accompanied by his dad and two older brothers, on the way to their CEIP Garcia Escamez school, in Santa Cruz. Events from that horrific day will never be forgotten by those who witnessed them. The family were walking across a zebra-crossing outside the school gates, when, suddenly, two of the boys were mown down by the woman, driving a red Volkswagen Polo. The older child was injured, but, after treatment, was allowed home, while Dereck was hospitalised because his condition was
critical, especially as he had suffered a heart attack the instant he was hit. He also sustained severe head injuries. The youngster, who made a swift recovery from the heart attack, had been in Candelaria Hospital since the accident, under constant care and observation. But, at the age of four, he faced a mighty battle to recover. Sadly, Dereck lost that fight on Monday, and the entire family, not just his uncle, are disgusted that the woman who caused his death hadn’t the decency to call since the collision, to apologise, ask for forgiveness, or enquire as to
‘Missing’ riddle of the rescued fighting dogs THE Canarian Association for the Protection for Animals (Adepac) has reported the mysterious disappearance of 15 dogs, which were connected last year with the dog fights, held regularly in Guimar. A police operation last February led to these dogs being saved, and, in all, a total of 70 animals were rescued from a dog-fighting organisation. Along with the dogs, who have since been looked after by Adepac, 10 people were arrested. Because of the circumstances in which the fighting animals had been kept, they were given temporary places in dog residences for observation, and to be domesticated. One of the shelters was Maribal Residence, from where the 15 dogs have
disappeared. But on Wednesday, as inquiries were made about where the dogs could have been taken, claims were made that Adepac staff actually took the dogs. When Adepac President Yahaira Tovar visited the Maribal Residence for
answers, she was told that the dogs had been returned to their owners. That came as an enormous shock to her because the dogs were in the care of the Association, under protection from their owners. After her discovery, the President reported the dogs’ disappearance, and she also accused the people at the Maribal shelter of not being “completely honest” about the dogs’ current whereabouts. The whole issue with Maribal Residence and the disappearance of the dogs is proving to be a serious case, for police and Adepac alike. To make matter worse, Tenerife sources say the island hasn’t seen the last of the gruesome, so-called sport of dog-fighting.
how Dereck was getting on. His bitter uncle, Juan José, issued a statement on Monday, showing his pain at the loss of an innocent child, to whom he was very close. He asked, without hesitation, that the woman concerned be imprisoned, saying: “I cannot believe she is still on the street with her children. But my sister and her husband will not have Dereck at their side any more.” The tragic boy passed away in the hospital after his courageous battle for life. Thankfully, his older brother is recovering well from his injuries. For the family, who are
so private that their surname and Christian names have never been mentioned, there is a slight consolation, because the guilty woman could now be facing up to four years in prison. The Santa Cruz Bar (bench of lawyers), have noted that the child’s death has given the case a completely new angle. It means that the woman could now be charged with reckless homicide, which normally carries a one-year prison sentence. But, because she was also intoxicated with drink and drugs, she could receive a maximum four-year sentence.
Big concern for frontline home-owners of Medano
THE Costas department, which protects the coastlines across Spain, has begun procedures to regain 3,208 linear metres of El Medano’s coastline in Granadilla. A 19-page report has been published, and 92 properties in the area, including communities and a hotel, which stretches from the pier to La Pelada beach, will be affected. The owners of all properties involved have a month to examine the case and submit all relevant documents, along with any evidence which will help towards their cases. In total, the number of owners possibly
affected add up to 1,200, and dozens of plots owned by private individuals, the majority being foreign residents, could also be in jeopardy. Of the properties involved, Granadilla Council owns six, along with eight communities, which are mostly residential. They are: Casa Inglesa, Llagos de Miramar III, La Jaquita, Maresia, Marina, Los Martines, Medano Beach and Avenida Europa. Granadilla Council is documenting the whole situation, and says it will do whatever is necessary to look after the interests of those affected.

Council short-cut to its ‘Happy Streets’ scheme AS part of its presentation at Fitur, Madrid’s Spanish tourism trade fair, Adeje Council, via the Costa Adeje Brand, has launched the “Happy Streets” booking concept. It enables people to buy a huge range of tickets for various events on one webpage. Under the tagline, “Wherever you look, 360º of fun”, the Council detailed the creation of a web platform, allowing visitors to look for
information on events and book directly. The activities are both public (Council-organised) and private, and they include cultural, music, sports and social happenings. The platform sees the Costa Adeje brand working with private institutions such as Siam Park, Hard Rock Hotel, Fara Producciones, Monkey Beach, La Terrazza del Mare, Le Club and Creventy. “For us, it is very clear that what is increasingly important, and what is the main challenge for us, is meeting the needs
of a diversity of tourists, and coming up with a leisure offer to meet all needs and expectations”, said Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, who attended Fitur with the council’s Tourism Councillor, Ermitas Moreira. Events detailed online include “The Passion” (the Good Friday street theatre on the town’s Calle Grande every Easter), concerts in Siam Park, and the “Children of the 80s” gigs in the Hard Rock Hotel, as well as events in popular night-time venues such as Monkey Club, Terrazza del Mare and Le Club.
“We are offering different activities for all kinds of visitors, from those who are travelling alone or with a partner, to families with children of all ages”, said Ermitas Moreira. Under the “Happy Streets” label, visitors can choose the kind of event which interests them. By visiting www.costa-adeje.es and clicking on the Happy Streets option, they will have a menu to choose from, and can view the year’s calendar of events, in addition to being able to buy the relevant tickets to where and when they wish. During the trade fair, details
of the XXVIII Rally Villa de Adeje Cicar were also presented, including the news that the organisers were hoping to include the circuit on the international stage. During the 2018 rally, technical inspections will be taking place, and, if all goes well, the rally could be a European circuit. Present at the event were Adeje Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso, along with Poli Delgado, the Adeje Rally President, and Manuel Aviñó, Director General of Cicar and President of the Spanish automobile federation.
No more bridge of sighs! WORK on the new Los Cristianos bridge, in Avenida Chayofita, will start during the next week or so, and will replace the two existing bridges. One of the bridges will be demolished shortly, because of its unsafe design and structure, while the other is old and needs to be replaced. An Arona Council statement says that although the work will begin shortly, the bridges will be taken down separately, because it believes it is important not to leave a heavy, populated area without a safe crossing. The bridge is being built at a nearby warehouse, and, once installed, the second one will then be demolished. The new construction will have total accessibility for people with reduced mobility, thanks to its wheelchairfriendly design. And the structure will be the same height as the local Jesús Domínguez sports complex. Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena has already made a visit to the area, to evaluate the situation.

Ryanair pilots are set to go on strike RYANAIR’S pilots in Spain, who have threatened to take legal action, will announce a strike within days, if certain assurances are not met over their employment rights by today (Friday). The Spanish pilots’ union, SEPLA, has written to the airline, accusing management of failing to negotiate in good faith, since recognising unions formally, before Christmas. The union has told the Ireland-based airline that if a meeting is not held by today (Friday), to regularise the rights of Ryanair pilots,
in accordance with Spanish regulations, it will initiate “all legal actions that Spanish labour law grants us in defence of our legitimate rights”. In the letter, SEPLA says it is surprised and disappointed at documentation received from management, which continues to link payment of a 20% pay rise to conditions deemed unacceptable by pilots. They have also blasted the airline for insisting on maintaining a system of 87 individual Employee Representative Councils, which was rejected by pilots in favour of union representation. The letter accuses Ryanair of acting in bad faith, by making the pay increases conditional on accepting what it calls “a workers’ representation,
contrary to our labour law”. SEPLA calls on Ryanair to apply the 20% increase to all their pilots operating in Spain from 1st September, without making it conditional on “renouncing to the legal workers’ representation, recognised in our legislation”.
Spanish King’s business fillip!
KING Felipe VI has told leaders at the World Economic Forum to continue investing in Spain because it is a “great country”, despite the ongoing Catalan saga. “My intention is to reinforce this idea, and help brush away the remaining doubts you may still have,” he told a packed audience at the Davos summit. The King also drew on Spain’s
tourism trade, which is set to overtake the US as the world’s second-most-visited country, as well as the country’s financial recovery after the 2008 crash. And of the Catalan crisis, he said the debacle was an “attempt to undermine basic rules of our democratic system”. He added: “Spain’s constitution is the very expression of the will of our citizens, and the key pillar of our democratic co-existence. And, as such, it deserves the utmost respect from each and every one.”
The letter concludes: “If, by January 26th, a new meeting has not been held, in order to regularise the rights of Ryanair pilots operating in Spain, in accordance with Spanish regulations, we will proceed to initiate all legal actions that Spanish labour law grants
us, in defence of our legitimate rights.” But for all the problems in a turbulent 12 months, Ryanair has retained its status as Spain’s most popular airline. According to the SEPLA union, the low-cost carrier now flies one-in-six passengers to Spain,
adding up to some 38.5 million. Last year, Ryanair had to cancel thousands of flights amid a series of strikes and planning issues, and the airline’s growth rate was stifled. But they still grew by 11% on Spain, though that was a lower rate than in the previous two years. The company’s closest competitor, Vueling, transported 14.4 million customers, which was 24 million fewer than Ryanair. Iberia, including its Express subsidiary, along with easyJet, Iberia, Norwegian and Jet2, are the other lowcost airlines featuring in the top-10. Over the last five years, Ryanair carried an additional 10 million passengers in Spain. But it has lost its position as Europe’s most popular airline.

NEWS IN BRIEF Tourist drowns in pool
AN 82-year-old German National drowned in a swimming pool on Monday afternoon at a hotel in Calle Aceviño, Puerto de la Cruz. The Canarian emergency services were contacted at 5.13pm, requesting an ambulance. The caller said the drowning man had already been pulled out of the pool by hotel staff, who were trying to resuscitate him. Ambulance medics, along with a local doctor, continued to attempt to resuscitate the man, but to no avail.
Murder suspect, aged 64
THE Guardia Civil have arrested a 64-year-old, believed to have murdered a man 38 years his junior on Sunday night in Paraja, Fuerteventura. Witnesses saw two people fighting as they entered a building. The older man was holding a pole with a knife attached to it, while the younger man had a glass bottle. Shortly afterwards, the young person left the premises, covered in blood. Moments later, the older person found the 28-year-old unconscious in a nearby street. Immediately, he hit him on the head twice with a stone, causing his death. But the autopsy revealed that the young man had considerable blood loss, caused by six stab wounds.
Pensioner smoked out
A GERMAN woman, 74, and her cat, were evacuated from their La Laguna home in Lomo de Arico, Las Rosas. It happened at around 10pm, when the woman returned home to look for her cat, after being with her family next door. After going inside, she inhaled smoke from a chimney fire in the timber-framed house, which had spread to the roof. The blaze was extinguished by firemen and the woman was said to be out of danger, pending a University Hospital check-up.
Thomas Cook fraudster
A WOMAN who stole more than £140,000 from travel company Thomas Cook to fund luxury holidays, has been jailed for 18 months. Alicia Moran, 34, a foreign-exchange sales assistant, discovered a computer loophole which enabled her to steal the money and cover the fraud. The mother-of-two spent the cash on trips to Spain and the US, as well as paying off her own debts, and those of her partner and his mother. And she tried to bribe colleagues with a “handbag full of cash” when the game was up. Moran was arrested at Glasgow Airport when she arrived home from a trip to New York and Las Vegas. Paisley Sheriff Court was told she offered to repay the money at £40 a week, which would have taken her 70 years.

Teenage pair stage a knife-point robbery
NATIONAL Police in Gran Canaria capital have detained two youngsters, aged 15 and 17, for violent robbery in a car wash. The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday, when the two minors
entered the premises, and stole money by threatening a worker at knife-point. Later, they tried to enter another business, but were surprised by the person in charge. Police, who were alerted, searched the area and caught the two boys, who wore hoodies and were armed with sharp weapons. Both were
detained immediately. Shortly after their arrest, a second call was made to the police, reporting that an attempted robbery had taken place at a shop in the vicinity. But there was a disturbance, so the boys ran off, heading towards El Cruz de Piedra, The case is now in the hands of the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Court.
Rajoy’s high-speed train debut so slow SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was stuck on a new highspeed train on Monday, somewhere between Castellón, in Valencia, and Madrid. Rajoy, along with the Public Works Minister Iñigo de la Serna, and other public representatives and journalists, was travelling along the high-speed, AVE route. The new train, already described by local media as “the tortoise”, is supposed to shave half-an-hour off the time to the Spanish capital. But even with the Prime Minister on board, it arrived 30 minutes late, marking the start of a service which has taken 11 years to complete. The new AVE service, scheduled to open to the public on Tuesday, will run at just 100km/h on the stretch between Valencia and Castellón, and must share the track with slower, local and regional trains. Gleeful reporters on board posted photos on Twitter of one of the local trains
overtaking the so-called, high-speed machine. One reporter said the delay had been down to a problem with one of the “points motors”, which move trains between tracks. But Spanish rail operator Renfe said the delay might have been caused through a track-scheduling conflict with the local trains, given the exceptional nature of Monday’s journey. Spanish track operator Adif tweeted that there had been an “infrastructure incident” on the tracks between the
towns of Puçol and Sagunt, causing “12-minute” delays for medium and longdistance journeys, between Valencia and Castellón. Adif also replied to one Twitter user, who had reproached the Public Works Minister online, saying that the delay was caused by allowing two local trains to go past first. Yet the Public Works Minister described the opening of the new line as “another milestone in highspeed trains in Spain”. Just not on Monday, though!

Puigdemont the one and only candidate - despite opposition! THE Catalan Parliament’s new Speaker, 38-year old Roger Torrent (ERC, Esquerra), announced on Monday that Carles Puigdemont was his “only candidate” to become the new First Minister of Catalonia. At the time, however, Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena was about to deny a request from Spanish prosecutors to activate the European arrest warrant for Puigdemont. The denial came after the ousted Catalan premier landed in Denmark on Monday morning, despite risking his arrest. Puigdemont had flow to Copenhagen to attend a conference at the city’s university, his first trip in 80 days outside Brussels, to where he fled in November to avoid charges of sedition, rebellion and misappropriation of public funds over the illegal independence push. Meanwhile, Torrent said he had listened to the ideas of the other parties in the regional chamber, where no single group holds, or, comes close to holding, a majority, following last month’s ballot. And, he stressed, he was aware of the former leader’s “personal and legal situation”, adding: “My duty as the
Speaker of the Catalan Parliament is to do all in my power to ensure that all MPs can express themselves freely.” The separatist block of three parties (ERC, Junts Per Catalunya and the CUP) hold a two-seat majority, if all their MPs are added together. Torrent has suggested a meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy “to sit down to analyse, and talk about, the anomalous situation in the Catalan Parliament”. He also said the “political rights of eight MPs were currently being infringed” and that he would like to talk to those members “deprived of freedom while in jail on remand”. But Spain’s authorities are determined to prevent Puigdemont’s return, and troops are said to be on “24/7 alert” to block him. The former Catalan leader faces arrest if he returns to Spain,
which is highly improbable right now. Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido, when asked whether Puigdemont could enter Spain incognito, said: “We are taking steps along the border and inside the country, everywhere, to see that it does not happen. “We are doing it in such a way that he cannot enter (the Catalan parliament), even in the boot of a car.” Puigdemont actually vowed to form a new government, after the speaker of the Catalan Parliament proposed him as President. But Zoido said the Guardia Civil were working “morning, noon and night” to prevent his return. “He is fleeing Spanish justice, and he cannot determine the sequence of events,” he added. The Spanish Government has also stressed that it is not “legally possible” for Puigdemont to rule from exile.
Mafia chief is nabbed after 25 years on run NATIONAL Police captured an Italian Mafia boss in Alicante, after he’d spent nearly 25 years on the run.
Fausto Pellegrinetti had been living in a luxury penthouse apartment in an exclusive area there, under an assumed name and with a forged ID card. He was arrested in a
mammoth operation involving Rome’s Anti-mafia squad, following two years of investigations. Pellegrinetti, who, as well as Fausto, was known as Franco and Enrico, was a leading member of the La Magliana Mafia. He escaped “house” arrest in 1993 at a private clinic in Rome and went on the run, three International Arrest Warrants failing to lead to his capture until now.
The Italian had received a 13-year jail sentence for trafficking over half-atonne of cocaine, and laundering six billion Italian lira (about 3.1m euros), earned through drug-dealing. He is now known to have continued with his Mafia-style activities from the Costa del Sol, but he eventually moved some 700km away to Alicante on the east coast, to cover his tracks.

of the worst in the country’s aviation history, with just 18 passengers surviving the Barajas Airport crash. The pilot, reportedly, failed to deploy flaps and slats during a second take-off attempt, which meant the plane, unable to remain airborne, swerved off the runway and burst into flames. Now, campaigners are calling for a thorough probe into what caused the crash and who was responsible, as well as learning lessons for future accidents.
On the petition page, campaigners have written: “Almost 10 years later, the Congress of Deputies has not yet opened a Commission of Inquiry to clarify the causes of the accident, debug responsibilities, extract knowledge for the safety and prevention of air accidents, and also repair the victims and their relatives with the truth. Justice.” But it could prove difficult, because the Spanair company closed down operations in 2012.
So-called ‘deaf’ woman arrested for cash scam THE Guardia Civil are investigating a woman who pretends to be disabled, so that she can persuade good-natured people to hand over cash. She is a 57 and a foreign resident, living in Guia de Isora, who claims she is
with a Spanish association for deaf people, which does not exist. But the Guardia are now on her case, for attempted fraud. She goes about her day, purporting, to be deaf, and approaching local people with a clipboard, with forms from a supposed, relevant association attached. It gives passersby the impression that she
works for the association, because she has been asking them for signatures and postcodes, along with cash donations. But her scam has come to an end because Guardia officers have intervened and confiscated her folder, in which she had many signatures and postcodes. She now awaits a court appearance.

Five injured in Migrants’ late-night a TF-5 pile-up rescue, after two die AT least 70 migrants, in two boats, were rescued off Andalucia’s Almerian coast last Saturday night, by the region’s Maritime Rescue service.
FIVE people were injured in a kamikazi-type driving incident on the North-bound TF5, in the early hours of Monday. Fortunately, there were no fatalities, but all five suffered as a result of combined crashes, especially the driver of a Blue Peugeot 106, who later tested positive for alcohol. He was said to have caused the pile-up by spinning out of control on a curve, heading towards El Sauzal, and crashing into a black Renault Megan, occupied
by two women. Other accidents were caused by other drivers trying to avoid the two cars. Guardia Civil officers detained the Peugeot driver, who was bruised badly, before releasing him for treatment at the University Hospital. A 38-year-old women and a child of eight were also taken there for observation, having endured moderate stomach and chest trauma. In addition, a 43-year-old woman was transferred to Candelaria Hospital with leg injuries, while a 33-yearold man was taken to the Quiron Hospital, in Costa Adeje, with injuries to his chest.
But, tragically, one of the boats had been wrecked, leaving two people dead before the coastguards’ arrival. They reached one boat,
more than 30 miles southwest of Cabo de Gata, at around 11.50pm. Authorities had previously been warned that two boats had sailed from Morocco that afternoon. Coastguards, sailing in the Guardamar Polimnia, rescued 34 people from one of the boats in the Alboran Sea. Another coastguard boat, the Salvamar Spica, arrived to find 33 people in a boat used by fishermen, who had rescued them,
after their own vessel sank. But two people died as the boat went down, and there were others still in the water when the coastguards arrived. A further four people were rescued at sea, by coastguards in a helicopter, and taken to Almeria city. The migrants, from SubSaharan Africa, arrived at Almeria’s port in good health, according to reports, and there were no children on either boat.

US now imposing olive import duty
THE United States has imposed import duties on ripe Spanish olives, because, it says, preliminary findings indicated they were subject to unfair subsidies that harmed California producers. The action is part of President Donald Trump’s aggressive defence of US trade interests, with antidumping and countervailing (anti-subsidy) duty actions up 61% since he took office, according to the Commerce Department.
Following a complaint from California producers, the agency found that Spanish exporters benefited from subsidies of between 2.3% and 7.2%, which are not permitted. American customs officers will collect cash deposits on olive imports based on those rates, stress its Commerce Department. In 2016, the US imported ripe Spanish olives, mainly from Seville producers, and worth an estimated $70.9 million. “We will continue to review all information related to this preliminary determination, while standing up for American workers and com-
panies,” said Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. His department is set to announce its final decision concerning the anti-dumping case against Spanish olives on 5th June, while the final ruling on the earlier, countervailing duties decision, should be made in May. But the rulings will be subject to an International Trade Commission review on whether US producers were affected. Meanwhile, US customs agents will collect cash deposits on olive imports based on the rates, according to the Commerce Department.
Kids suspected of a double murder TWO 14-year-old boys have been held by police in connection with the murder of an elderly couple in northern Spain. The bodies of two 87-yearolds were found by their son-in-law at their home, in the Otxarkoaga area of Bilbao, Basque Country. The well-known pair, who ran a popular homedecorating business until a decade ago, had been stabbed and beaten to death in their groundfloor flat, during what police believe was an attempted robbery.
A probe led to the arrest of the two teenagers, both from the same town, and both with prior criminal records for robbery and violence. They were identified after detectives were told by neighbours that they had seen them “hanging around” the property. One boy was arrested in nearby Balmaseda, and the second one then turned himself in at a Bilbao petrol station, after realising he was being followed. Residents say that Otxarkoaga has suffered a “wave of robberies” by “the usual suspects” in the past year.

Vilaflor can make a big splash again
VILAFLOR Council has had its water network system overhauled, to avoid any more droughts, after suffering its worst in years.
The maintenance followed drinking-water restrictions, which were put in place there because of a shortage of water since last summer. It proved to be one of the town’s most severe droughts ever, and stretched right through the municipality. The maintenance work consisted of re-channelling the water pipes from
various water galleries and water deposits. The main problem was caused by the municipality’s altitude, because water destined for the town simply wasn’t reaching its lofty destination. Luciano Marreno, the Water and Agriculture Councillor, has emphasised the importance of a good water supply to Vilaflor and Chasnia, especially for the agricultural and wine sector, which is an important source of economy to the island. Now, happily, optimism abounds throughout the Council, as well as the residents.

Port traffic poses massive problem ARONA Mayor Jose Julian Mena, and Councillor Jose Luiz Gomez, have had discussions with Hector Gomez, the Canary Islands’ socialist group deputy, to try to resolve the problem of traffic, in and out of Los Cristianos Port. The trio also discussed the desperate need to improve access to and from Los Cristianos town, via the TF-1 South motorway. They have, potentially, an idea of a link road between the port and the motorway, which would speed up access for people getting to the ferries on time to travel to neighbouring islands. Arona Council has also collaborated with Santa Cruz Port Authority to redirect traffic, using additional embarking and disembarking lanes at the port, which has paid off to an extent, reducing traffic-
jams both in and out, though not ending them entirely. Other solutions for major projects n the area will be tackled by the Canarian Government. Mena said that Los Cristianos Port, one of the island’s busiest, was extremely important, adding that all the activities
there, good or bad, affected all the workers, as well as local residents. “People commute daily, and travel regularly to the neighbouring islands,” he stressed. “So it is very important that there is commitment to solutions and projects, and that we work to try to end these problems once and for all.”

Thousands turn out to honour San Sebastian
LA Caleta was packed with thousands of people last Saturday, to celebrate the feast of San Sebastián, one of the oldest festivals here in the South. The San Sebastián festival, staged in Adeje since the 18th century, has been adapted over time to meet and acquire new needs and customs. Residents and visitors filled the plaza and La Enramada beach to mark the day, some attending both the religious part of the celebrations, as well as the highly-popular activity of almost 130 horses and riders taking a short dip in the sea. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said the long-standing fiesta’s location had been a meeting place in
the past. He also said its longevity was probably down to the Guanches (Tenerife aborigines). “They held celebrations in this area, and, following their conversion to Christianity, continued to celebrate here, and that spontaneous continuance is
part of our heritage,” said the Mayor. “But it also shows our strength as a people who belong to a community, looking to move forward and adapt, consistently.” Rodríguez Fraga added: “One of the nicest things about this festival is the coming together and meeting up with so many different people. San Sebastián is a reflection of our dayto-day lives, with roots in our past. It is a day when we remember our history, from where we have come, as well as those who have gone from our lives. “The fiesta of San Sebastian has become a celebration that transcends individual religious beliefs, which is why we enjoy this day so much, and why it has
become an international celebration.” That celebration began at midday with a sung Mass, broadcast live by the municipal station’s
Radio Sur Adeje, on air and online. Events were also broadcast live by other local and regional radio and television stations. After Mass, the statue of San Sebastian was carried from the church, and, accompanied by the Adeje Patron band, walked to the La Enramada beach, followed by the traditional parade of horses and riders, with a camel, small ponies and a few donkeys as well. After the sea dip, the statue and the animals returned to the main street in front of the church, where the par-
ish priest blessed them all, including a flock of goats and the many domestic animals which members of the public had brought along for the purpose. The festival atmosphere throughout the morning was a reflection of the social harmony that Adeje is always keen to encourage, especially on days like this. It’s a day when residents and visitors, both from other parts of the islands and the country, as well as from abroad, come together in one of Adeje’s most popular fiestas. Photos: Sir Old Golfer
Border stampede sparks one death
A STAMPEDE at the Moroccan-Spanish land border has led to the death of one man, while several others were injured. The incident happened at the Barrio Chino border post, near the Spanish enclave of Melilla, when crowds suddenly rushed at the turnstiles from the Moroccan side, and at least three of the injured were on the Spanish side. The victim, a 39-year-old man, died of cardiac arrest, according to Moroccan government sources. The border post, used by thousands of people every day to transport goods into Spanish territory, was closed until order
was restored. A total of 11 people were injured on the Moroccan side of the border, according to the country’s human-rights association. The news follows other stampedes which have taken place on the border in recent months. Two women were killed last week at the Tarajal II crossing, near the Spanish enclave of Ceuta and the Moroccan town of Fnideq. And four female porters were trampled to death there last year. In fact, the majority of people who use the crossings to transport goods are women, with thousands of them travelling, as porters, between Cueta and Morocco daily, according to estimates. Spanish authorities have imposed a daily limit of 4,000 people.

Cops arrest drug-smugglers
THE Guardia Civil detained a woman of 20 and a 59-year-old man at Lanzarote airport, trying to smuggle cocaine into the island. They were both were acting nervously as they entered the airport from a Madrid flight. That created suspicion with the Guardia Civil, who questioned the pair, and also performed a body check on them. While officers searched them, they discovered that they were acting as mules, carrying packets of cocaine attached to their bodies. The woman was found with 558gms and the man 521gms. They were both arrested for crimes against public health, and drug-smuggling, but had no previous records.
Cops ground ‘drunk’ pilot
ARMED police removed a British Airways pilot from a flight, after cabin crew, who believed he was drunk, alerted authorities that they could smell alcohol as they awaited take-off. The first officer was in the cockpit of the Boeing 777 flight 2063, at Gatwick, carrying 300 passengers to Mauritius, when the cops boarded and took him into custody. The flight was delayed for over two hours while a replacement pilot was found, and a BA spokesman said the company was taking the matter extremely seriously. He added: “We are sorry for the delay, but the safety and security of our customers and crew is always our top priority.”
Spain’s sunken treasures still there for the taking
In 2015, off the Columbian coast, the “Holy Grail of shipwrecks” was found, carrying loot that could be worth up to 10 billion dollars.
The Spanish galleon San Jose sank in 1708 during the War of Spanish Succession, taking a cargo of gold, silver, emeralds and jewellery from the country’s South American colonies to a watery grave. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos described it as “the most valuable treasure found in the history of humanity”. Closer to home, a Roman anchor was retrieved off the Mallorcan coast last December, while divers from the Guardia Civil’s underwater team also found a pottery jar from 3BC, potentially worth millions. A spokesman said: “It is very likely that there are still some gems out there, just waiting to be discovered.” The waters around Gibraltar, renowned for wreck-diving, have yielded countless Roman and Phoenician treasures. And, further up the coast, off Portugal, the recovery of the Spanish frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, which sank in 1804, sparked an eight-year legal wrangle over ownership, which was won by Spain in 2015. But much of Spain’s sunken treasure lies under the stretch of ocean between its own shores and its old New World colonies.
Many ships in the Spanish Treasure Fleet, a convoy system adopted from 1566 to 1790 to provide galleons with safe passage, fell prey to tempests, warfare and piracy. Before the infamous 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet sunk off the coast of Cuba trying to escape pirates, an earlier, much heavier
Not-so-smart thief NATIONAL Police detained a 37-yearold Spaniard, after watching him snatch a woman’s bag in a Santa Cruz street.
The incident happened in late December, at 11.20pm, and the police were soon on his tail. Once the woman realised her bag was stolen, she and another woman nearby shouted for help. But the police had already started to chase the thief, who was caught, eventually, after tripping over, and the police returned the lady’s bag to her. While detaining the man,

bounty entered troubled waters. The San Miguel, believed to be one of the richest treasure galleons ever lost at sea, was the pride and joy of Spanish conquistadors. And it carried huge weights of Inca and Aztec gold when she sank off the Dominican Republic coast in 1551. The Spanish sent a reconnaissance vessel to retrieve some of the lost gold, but salvaged only a small portion. The first blow to Spain’s fleet of valuable ships, which would inspire El Dorado legends for years, happened when the Spanish salvaged just a small portion of the San Jose’s lost gold. Various expeditions have been set up to recover the rest of the treasure since the ship sank, over 500 years ago. But nothing has turned up. Meanwhile, the merchant ship El Salvador, bound for Cadiz in 1750, was loaded up with gold, silver and supplies in Havana, to join six other vessels heading back to Spain. As the convoy set off from present-day Cape Canaveral, Florida, a hurricane forced the ships into the harsh trade winds
of the Gulf Stream, pushing them back up the coast to North Carolina. The ship, smashing into the outer banks, foundered on the beach near Ocracoke with millions of pesos aboard, as well as four chests of gold coins and 16 chests of silver coins, which still remain buried in the sand. The Nuestra Señora de Atocha, stashed to the gunnels with gold, copper, silver, gems and indigo from the New World, which took all of two months to load on board, sailed into troubled waters in 1622. The Atocha sailed in a convoy of 28 ships for safety reasons, but the weather had other plans. A hurricane hit the convoy, with many of the ships, including the Atocha, perishing in the Florida Keys. It wasn’t until 1985, following a 16-year search, that American treasurehunters Mel Fisher and Finley Ricard discovered buried loot, worth almost 500 million dollars, in the waters off Key West. Yet experts agree a rich source is still out there, including precious Muzo emeralds. And, according to details of the original manifest, buried in the deep are still 17 tonnes of silver bars, along with 128,000 coins of different values, 27kg of gems and 35 boxes of gold. Time to put on your diving gear, perhaps!

Tasers to take sting out of Arona crime
THE long arm of the law has just got a little longer in Arona… seven metres to be precise! That's the distance that two, immobilising, dartlike electrodes can be fired from the five new taser guns Arona Local Police have added to their crime-control armoury.
For the last month, 49 officers from various units of the Arona police have undergone training in the firing of these weapons, and the protocols for when they can be used. The total cost of the tasers is 16,133 euros, but it's just part of a 1.4-million-euro security upgrade in the borough, which includes new uniforms, and electric scooters and bicycles. It might appear new and modern, but the use of taser guns has been authorised for local police forces in the Canary Islands since 2002. Arona Police Councillor Carolina Reveron ex-
plained how the weapons would increase security for everyone in the municipality, saying: “In Arona, we have the UPP (Police Prevention Unit), which is an elite force in
the oldest local police force in the Canary Islands. “This is because, as a tourist destination, we face unique challenges in terms of night-life. We receive 1.5 million tourists a year,
and also have a population of 95,000 people, some in remote areas.” The tasers will be used only when there is a serious risk to the public or police, delivering non-lethal force
as an alternative to firearms. They are especially useful when dealing with people under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but they are prohibited for use against minors and pregnant women. Other guidelines include not aiming at low muscle areas, the face, or genitals, but legs and arms are the normal targets. The company supplying the tasers stressed that heart defibrillators emit pulses which are hundreds of times stronger than the tasers. Arona Local Police will also be more eco-friendly and stealthier, thanks to 15 new BMW vehicles. The late-December arrivals are headed by five Evolution C scooters, with liquid-cooled, electric motors, a 60mph range, and a top speed of 75 mph, each weighing in at 15,400 euros. Alongside them are six motorised F80 GT bikes, and four Cruise E electric bikes. It's all about making the Arona force more efficient and smarter.

Conwoman is up to her old tricks again PAULA Neale, a seasoned British fraudster, has taken her obnoxious tricks to the Costa del Sol, despite being exposed by various newspapers.
The conwoman specialises in snaring unsuspecting foreigners through her slick ruse of sub-letting properties. A number of victims lost thousands in deposits, after she took over a twobedroom apartment in Mijas. Using the “Sharon Tate” alias, she rented the Riviera apartment for three months, before being rumbled by the actual owner, mother-ofthree Sara Belmont. Sara, a 41-yearold London firefighter, has now involved the police, and she has contacted the authorities in Gibraltar, where she believes Paula keeps her money. Paula, paying 1,700 euros in rent, from November to February, said she was
moving in with her child and black cat. However, Sara, after reading an expose of Neale in the Olive Press online newspaper last December, began to investigate and found her property being advertised to rent through a variety of Facebook groups. One advert had been shared an incredible 4,000 times. Fortunately, the owner move swiftly, flying over to change the locks, and preventing anyone else moving in. However, during the short time she was over this month, two disappointed couples arrived to stay. A shocked Sara said: “One couple from Russia had paid a two-month deposit of 1,400 euros for a year’s rental. They were gutted. “Then, a few hours later, an English couple turned up, also with a year’s lease, having paid a deposit.” So far, she has been unable to track down Neale, but she has left reward notices in various vets around Calahonda, in Mijas.

Three changes to UK domicile rules that could cost you money By Paul Montague
Partner, blevins Franks
CHANGES to the UK domicile regime, backdated to take effect from 6th April 2017, could prove costly for expatriates. If you are planning to move to the Canary Isles, or currently live here and could potentially return to the UK, even temporarily, make sure you understand what the new rules mean for you and your family. 1. New time thresholds make UK domicile “stickier” Previously, it was possible to shed a UK domicile of origin (if you are Britishborn) after living abroad for three years, and acquiring a domicile of choice in your new country of residence.
Now, it will take four years. Throughout this time, you will be generally subject to UK taxation, including inheritance tax, on your worldwide estate. Meanwhile, foreign-born residents will automatically be deemed UK-domiciled for all tax purposes, after living in Britain for 15 out of the last 20 tax years, previously 17/20. At this point, they become subject to UK inheritance, income and capital-gains taxes on worldwide income and gains, even if domiciled overseas. 2. Returning Britons can be taxed immediately Britons living offshore may no longer claim “nondom” status when moving back to the UK, even if their permanent home is overseas, and they intend to eventually return there. Under the new rules, if you were born in the UK (having a UK domicile of origin), and then acquire a domicile of choice in another country, as soon as
you return to Britain you are deemed UK-domiciled. This, immediately, puts you in the firing line for UK income and capitalgains taxes. This can prove costly for expatriates who unexpectedly or temporarily relocate to the UK; for example, due to family illness or for children’s education. In each case, financial planning that has been structured to be tax-efficient for a life overseas, could instantly become exposed to UK taxation. A 12-month, inheritancetax grace period is in place to avoid capturing Britons who plan to stay only temporarily in the UK. However, you will not be eligible if you have been resident in the UK for at least one of the two years before returning. Consider updating your Will, and restructuring your assets to factor in this new tax liability. 3. All UK homes fall within inheritance-tax range Before 6th April 2017,
inheritance tax would not generally apply to an “enveloped dwelling” residential property owned through a corporate structure, which, in turn, was directly/indirectly owned by a non-domicile. Now, regardless ofownership, all UK residential property is subject to inheritance tax. No tax relief is available for “de-enveloping” property, so, if you hold UK residential property in this way, take care to understand all available options, to manage your inheritance tax exposure going forward. What action should you take? Domicile and cross-border taxation are highly complex, so specialist advice is essential, especially if you are considering relocating, or a significant amount of inheritance tax is at stake. Take time to determine your domicile status, how UK inheritance tax interacts with Spanish succession tax, and steps
you can take to minimise unnecessary taxes for your heirs. If you are looking to potentially return to the UK, even temporarily, take personalised advice as soon as possible, ideally before leaving the country, to maximise tax-efficient opportunities. In any case, with such new and untested changes, it is a good idea to review your financial planning, to ensure it remains suitable for your unique situation and goals. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; individuals are advised to seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks. com

Lost lottery ticket is worth a fortune
SANTANDER city council is searching for the owner of a Christmas lottery ticket, bearing the second-prize number 51244, which is worth 125,000 euros. A woman found the ticket on the street and handed it in to the National Police, since attempting to claim the prize herself would have been a criminal offence. But if two years pass and nobody has claimed
it, the prize money will go to the finder, according to Article 615 of the Civil Code. Spain’s mammoth El Gordo Christmas Lottery is drawn on 22nd December, and the lost ticket was discovered and handed in the following day. After checking with the court, and the State Lottery and Betting agency, police handed the ticket in to the city council, which is required to be notified in the event of a prize-winning lottery coupon being found.

In Cameroon Gordon works with scientist Mimi Swift, who is desperate to understand whether four year-old orphan chimp Kimbang has the skills she needs to be able to join a chimp family living wild in the forest. The on-board camera reveals that Kimbang is a skilful climber, able to find food at dizzying heights. We also see the first ever shots of a chimp washing its hands, and see these super-intelligent primates cleaning their teeth with twigs and weaving treetop nests. In Argentina, penguins carry tiny cameras far out to sea on an epic journey of up to 300 kilometres (200 miles). For the first-time ever scientists are able to see the tactics these charismatic characters use to catch their prey, including dropping beneath their prey and using their natural buoyancy to jet-propel themselves through a shoal of fish.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. In the first episode of this eye-opening series, Giles Coren and Monica Galetti join the 9,500-strong workforce in one of the world’s biggest hotels - Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands. This epic hotel caters for one million guests every year, cost £3.5 billion to build and was created as part of a government plan to triple tourist income to Singapore within ten years. The jewel in its crown is the longest elevated infinity pool in the world, the size of three Olympic swimming pools. Giles and Monica discover the marathon laundry process that cleans tens of thousands of towels per day, and unearth a high-tech uniform store, which supplies 160,000 pieces of uniform with 600 different designs. Giles joins the butlers team, led by an exSingapore special forces officer, whilst Monica dives into the fray with the 600-strong catering team servicing 60 restaurants. They also spend time with their new co-workers at home, uncovering heartwarming stories about their lives beyond the hotel.

James Martin’s Saturday Morning sees the hugely popular chef returning to Saturday mornings, with a two-hour show from his very own home. The series reflects James’s love of hearty food as well as some of his other passions…the great outdoors, his beloved dogs and, of course, fast cars. Each week he welcomes two guests into his own kitchen. Familiar faces include choirmaster Gareth Malone and weather presenter Carol Kirkwood. The chef and his guests cook together inside James’s kitchen and in his garden, making the most of his BBQ and pizza oven. Plus, each show features a guest regional chef who cooks in their home or their own restaurant. Viewers are joining in too as drinks VTs come courtesy of members of the public, who’ll give an authentic response to the wines and other drinks they taste.

Chris Packham: In Search of the Lost Girl cho i c e BBC2, 21:00
In 1998, wildlife enthusiast and photographer Chris Packham had a remarkable encounter with the Orang Rimba, a tribe of hunter gatherers in the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia. It was the first time he had ever seen people living in perfect harmony with their environment. One photograph in particular that Chris took, a picture of a young tribal girl, has since become immensely important to him as a barometer of how we are treating our planet. In this real-life detective story, with no clues as to her identity or whereabouts other thanhis original photograph, Chris sets off to Sumatra 20 years on to try to find her. As Chris’s investigation reaches its dramatic conclusion, will he find the lost girl alive? If so, will she be living in harmony with nature as she was 20 years ago? Or will Chris discover the deforestation of her island has had terrible consequences for her?

Burlington to Plattsburgh. Michael Portillo continues his American rail journey through New England as he heads for the Canadian border. First stop is Burlington, Vermont, a busy timber port at the time of his Appleton’s guide. Michael ventures deep into the forest to learn how sustainable and technological innovations have transformed the state’s billion dollar logging industry. Following the old trade route across Lake Champlain, he hears of a pivotal battle during the War of 1812 where a British defeat gave the United States a new confidence on the world stage. In Plattsburg, Michael learns of the surprising origins of a classic Christmas carol. Lead by his guidebook, he travels into the wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains. Here the rich and famous of Appleton’s day established great camps to get back to nature, in the lap of luxury. He visits the largest of the camps, reached by boat and even a private funicular railway.

Murdered for Love? Samia Shahid e c i BBC2, 21:00 cho
With unique access to some of her closest friends, this film tells the story of Samia Shahid’s life. On 14 July 2016, Bradford girl Samia flew to Pakistan to visit her family. Six days later she was found dead. She was 28 years old. Eight days later, her first husband and father were arrested in connection with her murder. The case was taken up by Bradford MP Naz Shah, who wrote to the prime minister of Pakistan describing the case as an honour killing. The film contains the first interview with Samia’s second husband, who tells the dramatic and tragic story of Samia’s return to Pakistan. Samia’s father has been released owing to lack of evidence, but her first husband remains in custody and the case in Pakistan continues. Both deny the allegations against them.

With unique access to one of the world’s largest luxury cruise ships, the Royal Princess, this six-part series returns to follow life on board for the staff and passengers who live, work and play on the vessel as it navigates the Mediterranean. The crew are in the middle of a busy summer season and face new challenges including tension on the bridge as they sail the huge vessel into busy holiday destinations, and heat in the galley, where staff must produce up to 20,000 high-quality meals a day. In the fourth episode, the Royal Princess is full to capacity in the beautiful Aegean port of Santorini. As the housekeeping team undertake the daily bed change in thousands of cabins, hotel general manager Craig gets an unwelcome call - the ship’s laundry is having a meltdown. A breakdown in the huge washing machine which normally processes tens of thousands of items a day has already produced a mountainous backlog of dirty washing and Craig needs to find a solution quickly.

Carnival 2018: Opening Parade
The queen’s costume, her maids of honour and the Carnival groups take on a whole new level when you see them in the flesh parading down the streets of Santa Cruz. The magic of getting up-close is what the audience experiences when they attend the great Opening Parade of the Carnival. The city’s main streets are closed off for a few hours to host a true spectacle of colour and joy. The parade encompasses the best of what has already happened and what is yet to come at the Carnival. Taking part are the murgas, comparsas, rondallas and music bands, together with the winners of the individual and group costume awards. And behind them are a whole host of carnival-goers dressed in all kinds of wacky outfits, from those thrown together at the last-minute to the most elaborate, ready to face the many nights of festivities ahead. The show gathers people of all ages. Traditionally, children are allowed to put on their costumes in the morning and wear them to school. Plus, in the city itself, most of the schools close early so that the kids can make the most of the festive fun. This shows just how much the city transforms during two weeks, enthralling locals, Islanders and visitors from all over the world.

Terror Tara’s putting an end to the rat pack
Nissan steering new brainwave T E C H N O L O G Y, enabling cars to be driven using brainwaves, has been showcased in Las Vegas, and carmaker Nissan is right on the ball.
The Japanese company, which has a factory in Barcelona and one in Avila, is now developing “brainto-vehicle technology”, and has premiered the concept at the Consumer Electronics Show. A head device monitors brain-waves to predict when a driver is about to steer, accelerate or brake. It then provides the assistance, as little as 0.5

seconds quicker than a human driver. And, says Nissan chiefs, the technology could be fitted within five to 10 years. “When most people think about autonomous
driving, they have a very impersonal vision of the future, where humans relinquish control to the machines,” said Nissan Vice-President Daniele Schillaci.
Huge tsunami threat for the US fizzles out ONE of the strongest earthquakes in US history put the entire west coast of America and Canada on tsunami alert, just after midnight on Tuesday. But for four hours only! A 7.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the Gulf of Alaska, about 175 miles southeast of Alaska’s Kodiak Island, at 12.30am on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey. Tsunami sirens sounded in Kodiak, and police warned: “This is not a drill.” They also urged residents to head for high ground “at least 100ft above sea level”. But, four hours later, officials tweeted: “National Tsunami Warning Centre has CANCELLED the Tsunami Watch for San Francisco.” Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage, not even on
Kodiak Island, which was the closest land to the quake’s epicentre. But the Alaskans, roused by a major earthquake and threatened with the spectre of a tsunami, had already moved off. They parked their cars on higher ground at Safeway and Walmart stores, and shuffled into schools that had become evacuation centres in the middle of the night. Some also rushed up Pillar Mountain. Mayor Pat Branson, of Kodiak, a city of about 6,200 people, on an island of about 13,800, said: “We’re very grateful that there was no major tsunami. “We live in a very prone earthquake -and-tsunami area, and it’s a beautiful place. But that’s what you have when you live in paradise.” Mercifully, though, the big waves never materialised,
and the authorities lifted the tsunami warnings, which had stretched from Alaska to the American border with Mexico. “Everybody had to evacuate,” said Fran Latham, of the town Yakutat, between Anchorage and Glacier Bay National Park. Fran, who runs a bed-andbreakfast business there, added: “It looked as though everybody was at the school and the police department.” Reports varied about how long the shaking lasted. In the cruise-ship town of Seward, about 230 miles north-east of Kodiak Island, fire chief Eddie Athey said the quake felt like a gentle rattle, and lasted for up to 90 seconds. He described it as a “controlled evacuation”, and compared it with people driving home from a holiday fireworks show.
A LOCAL female in County Durham is, single-handedly, biting into a community’s rat infestation, by hunting them… all by herself! Her master, Adrian Oliver, is on a mission to rid a housing estate, near Gilesgate, of its longstanding rodent problem, by employing his nippy terrier, Tara. The sight of rats has left parents fearing for their children’s safety, yet Tara, who looks like a teddy, has actually caught over 600 in the past year, and she once killed 42 in a day. But 33-year-old Adrian believes Durham County Council should sort out the infestation problem, and not rely on his dog. The father-of-two said: “I am scared to let my little girl play outside, because I am worried that a rat will jump on her. “They are everywhere… in bins, cars and sheds. And they even burrow underneath people’s houses and chew through the foundations.” He added: “But for Tara, they would, literally, be breeding like rats. We would be over-run with them, and they’d start to infect people and cause illness. But this could be avoided if the council took charge.” Adrian and Tara work as a team, his pet pouncing after Adrian has used a
machine to smoke the rats out of their hiding places. In the past, he said, the council charged locals £40 for rat poison to be spread in the area. But this technique failed when the rats became immune to the toxin. He believes the council should now be paying him and Tara for their exterminating services, because the rat population would, otherwise, be rife. Adrian added: “It is disgusting. It is a really, really bad problem in this area now, and has been for the last few years. “She may look cute and cuddly, but Tara has killed over 600 rats, some almost as big as she is. “People have been turning to me to get Tara to sort out their rat problem. I’ve even had people wanting to buy her off me for hundreds, but I’m not interested. “She is the best ratter in the business, yet she’s the softest dog when she is in the house with the kids. As soon as she gets outside, though, she can’t wait to get hold of those rats.” Joanne Waller, head of Environment, Health and Consumer Protection at Durham County Council said: “We take all reports of rat infestations seriously, and, although we do not believe there is a persistent problem in this area, we would be happy to investigate, should we receive further information.”

Va va volume! hair & Fashion By Carl pattison from Robot
IT’S probably the most-asked question in the salon: “How do I create volume?” The answer is always in the haircut; if this isn’t right, no matter what you put on your hair, it’s not going to create volume. Your hair must be layered for this effect, otherwise it will just fall flat. Then it’s on to the method of drying it; always start on wet hair to apply a root booster, and a volumising mousse, or spray. Then, upside down, begin to dry off your hair, concentrating on pulling the roots up with your fingers, as it dries.
When it’s 80% dry, sit back up and start to style with a suitablysized, ceramic brush. This will dry your hair from the inside out, ensuring that you create maximum lift. Once your hair is styled, fix it with a non-
aerosol spray, and push into place with your fingers. Avoid brushing, because this will flatten your look, and keep away from oily products, too. If this system doesn’t create volume in your hair, then nothing will.
Rough with the smooth By Carl pattison
TAKING the classic with casual, and mixing them together, is what’s coming through for you guys in Spring/ Summer 2018.
Combinations of smart jackets and polos, with your mostbeaten-up of jeans, is how to really get the look. There’s no real, set order of how you piece this together, just as long as there’s an obvious difference between the two, clashing styles.
Take a suit jacket that, maybe, has a college look to it, add in a formal shirt, and combine this with pale, beaten-up jeans. It may seem that it isn’t going to work, but, trust me, it’s such an on-trend look. You can take it from another angle, and wear the smarter look in the trousers, but add in your distressed denim on the top half in the form of a jacket, or even a shirt. There are so many ways to mix up this look, you really can’t go wrong.
Time for a make-over
By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic
THE word makeover was initially meant to describe a radical change in a person’s appearance. However, it’s not just one’s own physique that can get a makeover, your interior can, too! The famous phrase “fiveminute make-over” might be slightly too optimistic to expect for your interior, although, with the right help and preparations, massive changes can be achieved, in just the space of a day. Taking it step-by-step, the process of a makeover is as follows: ideally, the first step
is going to the property itself, and meeting the property owner, hearing what ideas they have, measuring the space, deciding on a budget, and suggesting ideas, ie colour schemes, layouts etc. Here in Tenerife, properties are often holiday/second homes, so it isn’t always possible to meet. This part of the project is undertaken, alternatively, via e-mails and telephone calls. After this phase is completed, and common ground is found between the property owner and designer, a moodboard is presented with the various ideas for the new look, and, once everything is decided, a date for the make-over is put into place. Make-overs don’t have to be the
complete works; you will achieve big changes just with new paint, new artwork and soft furnishings, or maybe a new layout of your original furniture. All this depends on what each individual wants; if you still love your furniture and sofas, don’t change them - it’s as simple as that! On the day, everything is done for you; old furniture etc. can be taken away, and the new furniture assembled, if necessary, and placed; professional painting and decorating; wall hangings, curtain rails etc fitted, and all completed with soft furnishings and finishing touches. If you would like to learn more about our services, please get in touch via e-mail at muebles.chic25@ gmail.com or call on 636 630 187.

Tyres, and what you need to know
from Motorworld
TYRES form an integral part of the car, and the types of tyres recommended, along with the permitted wear and depths, are there for the safety of the driver, passengers and other road users. Most people will replace worn tyres with new, rather than second-hand, which could be as bad, or worse, than those being replaced, in some instances! There is, currently, pressure on the Spanish Government to ban the sale of used tyres, because of fears for safety, by professionals. Tyres are routinely inspected at each ITV for sizing and tyre-tread depth, but the police may also, when stopping you, inspect your tyres, and whether they are in compliance with the
current depth measurement of 1.6 millimetres, across the central part of the tyre. If your tyres are more worn than this, you can be fined 200 euros per tyre! This could be a very costly outcome, if you thought you were saving money when replacing tyres with second-hand ones. Tyres, of course, must be of the correct size and fit for the vehicle, and information about any options (if any
exist) to those currently fitted to your car, can be found on your Ficha Tecnica. It is also important to make sure that the tyre pressures are correct, in accordance with the manufacturers’ guidelines. Often, you will find a sticker on the car door, or centre post, showing recommended tyre pressures, or you can always ask your mechanic, or look them up online.
Although the minimum tread-depth permitted by law is 1.6mm, most manufacturers recommend changing when the tyres are worn down to 3mm. This ensures that the car remains safe, and is able to stop in the required time and distance. Differing weather conditions affect stopping distances etc. In wet conditions, it would take a car with a treaddepth of 1.6mm an extra eight metres to stop, when travelling at 70 km/h, than if the tread were 3mm. Quite often, just by looking at your tyres, you would be able to identify those which are badly worn, as there would be much slimmer grooves. These are known as principal grooves. The weight of the vehicle, and the number of passengers and/or goods i.e. shopping, furniture etc. being carried, will also affect how quickly one can stop, in the event of an impending incident. It is important to always leave what is generally known as a safety gap
between you and the car in front, and to take care when driving in differing conditions. Very bright sunlight can sometimes affect your vision, and things like this must be taken into account when driving. When considering purchasing new tyres, be aware of their date of manufacture, which will be shown on the tyre. For example, 5215 means that the tyres were made in week 52 of the year 2015. Although they are new, and often sold on special offer, they can be quite old, with possible degradation to the rubber. Most reputable garages and tyre companies will ensure the best deals for their customers, but, if buying second-hand, the above information may be quite useful to you. Ask to see and inspect any purchase of second-hand tyres, to ensure the depths are within the legal limits, and that they are not too old.

What we can eat to clear that bug
THERE'S nothing worse than a bout of food poisoning. It's truly awful, and symptoms include stomach cramps, headaches and severe vomiting, as your body violently tries to get rid of everything inside it.
If you're not severely dehydrated, or in desperate need of medical assistance, you can usually ride out this horrific bug while wrapped in a blanket, tucked in with Netflix, and a glass of water. There are a few things you can have around to make your recovery time a little faster and easier. There are a variety of issues that could be going on with your stomach, and you may have a more serious health issue. For example, stomach pain marked with vomiting symptoms, if felt for a prolonged period of time, could be stomach 'flu, meningitis, or any number of more extreme conditions (so, if it gets worse, go to the hospital). You should be especially cautious if you have recently had surgery, as complications from even minor repairs could mimic 'flu or food poisoning. You know it's food poisoning
if you are tired, and your body is detoxing. Extreme cramps and high fevers, if they last more than 48 hours, are all reasons to visit the hospital, and get a double check. Foods to eat As with the 'flu, foods that are good to rehydrate, and to bring back the good bacteria that live in your gut, will help you get better. These foods can be therapeutic for anyone with an upset stomach: · Papaya is a great beginner fruit when your stomach is still upset. It contains enzymes that can help your body digest it a little
easier. It's water-based, full of B Vitamins, magnesium and potassium, which will help your cramps and dehydration. · Herbal teas are great, because the warm water is easier for your body to deal with, and certain teas can help symptoms of your food poisoning. Ginger tea can reduce nausea, chamomile is great for an upset tummy and getting to sleep, and some simple hot water with honey can soothe your throat. · Fruits are water-based (great for rehydrating), full of important vitamins and minerals, and are easy to
eat if your stomach is upset. Plus, fruit is one of the more calorie-dense foods you can eat, and foods like bananas help to grow gut bacteria. · Bone broth is a fantastic hydrator. Its salty water contains a lot of gelatin, which is great for your upset stomach, and it is also full of protein and trace minerals. · Activated charcoal can be used to help stop diarrhoea. · Coconut water can replenish your electrolytes after vomiting, but don't use if you're also experiencing diarrhoea. Don't attempt to eat anything spicy, acidic, fibrous or fatty, and avoid
dairy products. Spices and acidic foods can be tried, but it depends on your body. If your stomach can take a soup with pepper, go for it! Prevent food poisoning recurring You can prevent food poisoning from coming back through a variety of safety measures. It's nothing too complicated, and involves steps like using food thermometers when cooking, keeping a safe, sterile kitchen, and avoiding low-grade eateries when dining out. Practising basic food safety in your home will help prevent food poisoning. Remember to wash your hands, fruits and vegetables, and your refrigerator. Keep raw food away from foods that don't need to be cooked, meaning no bloody steak juice on top of your apples in the fridge, and no slicing them on the same cutting board! You should also keep things at an appropriate temperature, by checking the fridge temperature, and cooking, using a food thermometer. When you're going out to eat, and you're really not sure and don't want to ask, check out the rest rooms. A dirty rest room can sometimes hint at a dirty kitchen, or give you an idea of the general cleanliness of the restaurant.

“HELLO, my name is Heidi. Can you believe I have been waiting at K9 for six years, for my forever home? “The lovely people who look after me do not understand why. I am an affectionate and friendly girl, and love going out on walks, especially if treats are involved! And I am very relaxed and chilled in my kennel, but I don't get on particularly well with female dogs, as I find they always try to steal my spotlight! “I have been very patient here, but I would really like to get my chance to go and live with a real family, in a real home; could you offer me that? Come down and meet me; I would love to go for a walk with you! I am also one of K9's lovely sponsor dogs, so, if you would like to sponsor me, just visit our website!” Car-boot sale This will be held at the bus station in Los Gigantes on Sunday, 4th February, 9am1pm. Our dogs need homes!
WE have more than 200 dogs at the refuge, from the municipalities of Arona, Granadilla, Guia de Isora and Candalaria, all looking for new, loving homes. Many of the dogs arrive in extremely-bad condition, and without microchips, so we are unable to contact their owners. Please do think carefully before taking on a pet; not everyone is in a position to adopt a dog, but we are always looking for afternoon dog-walkers, to exercise some of the many dogs in our care. TributoFest 27.01.2018 The next TributoFest concert will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at Tenerife Magma, Costa Adeje, featuring headliners Coldplace, the best Coldplay tribute band of all. Ed Sheeran, performed by Stuart Beagley, is also on the bill, as is Charlotte Hopley's Katy Perry. This week, we chatted with Coldplace lead singer, Shane Crofts.
A little bit of Coldplace Paradise GRIMSBY may have seen a decline in its once-famous fishing industry, but four of its young men are flying the flag for this Lincolnshire town, displaying homegrown talent at its best!
Lead singer and pianist Shane, drummer Wayne Birch, lead guitarist Dean Stewart, and Asa Crofts, who plays bass, have hundreds of concerts under their belts, in over 20 countries. CW: What are your musical backgrounds? SC: I was about 11 when I first picked up a guitar, and, later on, started playing the piano. I wrote songs, and just practised in my bedroom! I was self-taught, and didn't have any lessons. Within a week, I had learned a couple of numbers on my guitar. I played every day and my fingers were sore, but I knew it was something I wanted to do. When our original bass player left, nearly 10 years ago, I asked my brother Asa if he fancied taking his place. He agreed, so I taught him how to play bass. Wayne and Dean have played in both original and cover bands for about 20 years, but this was Asa's first band. CW: How did Coldplace start? SC: The group originated about 13 years ago, with me putting adverts in places such as colleges, trying to find people who'd like to play in a Coldplay tribute band. At the time, they had only released two albums, so that's all we had to play with. To start with, we were sending out CVs, and we put ourselves online. But now we don't have to look for work, because of word-ofmouth recommendations, which is great. CW: Have you met Chris Martin? SC: I've met him a few times. He's very humble and down-
to-earth, and there's no ego, or anything like that. All the band are very friendly, and easy to chat with. A friend of mine in London once spoke with Chris, and he asked how I was, and said that we were doing a good job, which was very nice! CW: Where have you performed? SC: All over the world! We're all enjoying it; if you don't, it's time to stop. We're very much looking forward to the Tenerife gig; it's an amazing venue. CW: What's your favourite Coldplay song? SC: It changes from week to week. I love The Scientist, and some of the new ones, like Adventure of a Lifetime. It is a nice song to play, and I like its drums and bass-line. After a gig, one of the first
things we ask each other is what we think the song of the night was. It varies, and is mainly down to the people's reactions, because we always feed off the crowd. CW: How many songs will you perform at the Magma? SC: At least 17, and maybe one more, if there's time! CW: What about your equipment? SC: We have to take pianos and guitars to a lot of gigs, but, at others, nearly everything is provided. Once, we had to take the piano to India, but it's all part of the job! By mistake, at one venue, we were given a keyboard instead of a piano, so now I always check to see what's going to be provided! C o m p u t e r- p r o g r a m m e r Dean builds the sound
system exactly how Coldplay's Jonny Buckland does, and also creates visuals on the screens. For the sound and lighting, we sometimes use local people, but, on tour, or for certain shows, we have a soundand-lighting guy. CW: Do you get nervous? SC: I think it's more a case of adrenaline, rather than nerves, because you want to go and play your best. If people give up their time to come and see us, then there's expectation there. They've got ready during the day, and travelled to a show that they have bought tickets for, and they want a good performance. If you're up on stage and don't care about how the show is going, it's not the right way to be. CW: Where do you perform?
SC: Quite a bit in Europe, but mainly in the UK. We do a lot of festivals, and our biggest crowd was 60,000 people, at the Mathew Street Festival in Liverpool. But it doesn't matter whether there are 60,000 people or 60. If they are really enjoying it, the atmosphere can be just as good. If they're getting into it, that's good enough for us! And there are more concerts to come ‌ TributoFest is bringing some of the world's leading bands to Tenerife in a series of concerts, enabling fans to spend a night in the Magma, with three of their favourites each time. So, enjoy a full concert experience, comparable with watching the originals ‌ and, for the first time, you can bring the kids!
Tickets are available for adults, from 30 euros, and for juniors (age 7-17), just 20 euros. Go to www.tenerifemagma.com or www.tributofest.com

CD Tenerife review
MOUNT Teide now boasts a football on its moonscape, launched by Aitor Sanz’s dreadful 30th-minute penalty kick for Tenerife. It was just one of the lowlights in a horrendous home-showing that had fans booing, whistling, and leaving the stadium early. Coach Pep Marti has lost the players, or maybe they are trying to lose him. The club are giving him a final chance to improve things this Sunday, at home to Valladolid at 7pm. Barcelona, in the relegation zone, were seen as an easy stepping-stone back to winning ways. But the couldn’t-care-less attitude of the home players, together with more sloppy passing, was too good for them to resist. Barely 10 minutes in, Carles Perez beat defender Camille and put the ball through the open legs of Tenerife keeper Dani Hernandez, whose schoolboy error left the Barcelona

team crowing. But Tenerife were headless chickens. Their players looked scared of the ball, and couldn’t wait to get rid of it. After 15 minutes, Choco Lozano, a Tenerife forward last season, fed 19-year-old Perez and he was at it again. He played the seasoned Dani like a novice, drawing
Can Luis lift the gloom? AT TA C K I N G midfield player Luis Milla, the first new CD Tenerife signing in the January transfer window, should make his debut on Sunday. The 23-year-old Spaniard, who has led the promotion charge at Fuenlabrada this season in the division below Tenerife, is highlyrated. It’s not often Tenerife splash the cash, but they have spent 500,000 euros on the exciting player, and put him on a four-year contract! The move was confirmed before last week’s shocking home defeat, so it is not a panic buy. Luis attended the Barcelona B game and will be under no illusions about the task ahead. A new hero is needed, so it’s over to you, Luis! The transfer window slams shut at the end of the month, with rumours abounding over the return
of La Laguna-born striker Nano, from Eibar, and the possible 3.5m-euro exit of Spain Under-21 defender Jorge Saenz. Incomings would have to be balanced by leavers, so maybe it’s time to ditch some dead wood.
him out and then taking the ball around his desperate grasp, for a 2-0 lead. The home forwards were seeing little of the ball, with lazy, sideways passes at the back seemingly the fashion. Suso and Juan Carlos Real were spectators on the flanks, and Casadesus and Malbasic were as useful as chocolate tea-pots. Then came a lifeline. Cucerella was ruled to have handled the ball in the area - a poor call, but most welcome. But Sanz stepped up and blasted the ball way over the bar, and that’s when the crowd sensed how bad the night was going to be. The third goal followed quickly, with Perez completing his hat-trick by beating two home defenders. Camille was particularly weak, as the young forward shrugged him aside before finishing from a tight angle. Half-time saw fans
stunned in disbelief, but, on the plus side, the local bars did well as escapees streamed out. And had the gates not been open, they would have dug tunnels to escape. The teams returned, with Tenerife’s Alberto replacing Suso and adopting a midfield role. And he, at least, added a little bite and commitment, getting in an early shot at keeper Ortola. But, like a Stephen King novel, there had to be another level of suffering to add to the plot. Many teams have come to Santa Cruz to grind out a draw, or preserve a slender lead with spoiling tactics. Yet Barcelona introduced the diving, delaying and other theatrics while sitting on a three-goal cushion. The deluded fools actually thought Tenerife could come back to draw, or even win the match. Bryan Acosta ploughed on in midfield and made some
progress, while Casadesus managed a soft header at the away keeper, but it was still desperate stuff. Coach Pep Marti tried to be bold, introducing Tayron for Raul Camara, and it brought a little surge, a couple of corners, giving Acosta a chance to put in some dipping balls to attack. From one of those setpieces, Jorge Saenz jumped well to head in a home goal from Acosta’s well-flighted corner, with 12 minutes remaining. But that seemed to be the limit of resistance. Juan Carlos was booked for a foul and taken off, in favour of 17-year-old youth striker Borja Llarena. He didn’t have much chance to impress, but he did perform a good, attacking run in injury-time. Boos rained down at the final whistle as the players scurried off, and the 13,079 attendance was much-diluted by the end.

Toni’s winning farewell
South take the North
CD Marino 2 CD Vera 1 FULL of commitment, well-matched, and a blossoming partnership between Felipe and Zeben, gave CD Marino the edge. It was to prove the final game for home coach Toni Dumpierrez, who quit afterwards for personal reasons. Marino were quickly out of the traps, Felipe picking up a through-ball and feeding a perfect pass to Zeben, who
reacted swiftly for a firstminute goal. Stunned Vera settled slowly, and Samuel tried his luck with a shot, but poor control let him down. Yeo and Alexander combined well for the Puerto de la Cruz side, setting up Samuel, who swung wildly and sent the ball wide of the goal. There were more new faces for Marino, and rightback Meyi looked strong and quick in closing down opposing threats. Another newcomer, Ahmed,
Legends’ Grandee show!
By Andy Maughan WHAT a fantastic night at Grandee O’Donnell’s on Tuesday, but not for the home team! Legends A, on fire again, hammered them 10-2, with Graham Bollesty again winning all his three games. Legends A are not only top of the first division and unbeaten
in over a month, but Graham leads the player statistics board with an impressive 78% success rate, having played 36 games and losing just eight. Second-placed Scruffy Macs A lost, for the first time in over a month, 7-5 at Clouseaus. This means there is now a whopping seven-point gap between the top two. Second Division leaders Yelas Travellers have rediscovered their winning form over the past fortnight, after going five, long weeks without picking up a single point. They lead by a point from Loch Inn B, whose
was finding his debut a bit tougher, but Zeben has improved steadily since joining from Santa Ursula in the summer. The midfielder was playing a more attacking role, and enjoying a memorable game. Vera keeper Falero had to be decisive to cut out a Felipe header, after Kevin Castro had made a speedy run from deep. Nami started the season as a Marino forward, so it was strange to see him in the right-back role. But he played it well, and always had an eye to a break for goal. Just before the half hour, Marino doubled their lead through Felipe and Zeben, and, although it looked as though Zeben’s shot were going wide, his attacking partner raced in and tucked the ball just inside the post.
WHAT a pleasant way to spend a Saturday... a short hop up the motorway to La Laguna, a bit of sightseeing, perhaps, and, best of all for fans, a convincing 3-0 Superliga win by Arona Tenerife Sur. It was the latest reward for their hard work, and the straight-sets whitewash on CV Aguere’s home court keeps them tucked into fifth position. The opening set was won 25-
13, and it set the tone. The 25-14 second set showed it was no fluke, and what would be the final set was won 25-20 to crown their perfect day. Tomorrow (Saturday), the Tenerife team are at home to Feel Volleyball Alcobendas, at 6pm in the Los Cristianos sports hall. And it would be a real treat for them to avenge the 3-1 away defeat, inflicted by the Madrid-based team.
The second half saw Vera’s change of keeper because injured Falero gave way to Javi, whose his hands were warmed by a Felipe shot, which he he parried well
in mid-flight. The tempo had dropped a little from the opening half, and Vera tried to force their way back into contention, Alexander having a pop at goal and David thwarting him. Marino used their advantage to give subs Ricky and Prince a runout in place of Ahmed and Kevin Castro, while Vera brought on big forward Esau, who proved quite a handful for the blues. Yet Alexander was also determined to get something out of the game for Vera, and his powerful run and finish in the final 10 minutes reduced the arrears. But Samuel missed a last-gasp chance to end his side’s chance of a point.

Win or lose… it’s always a pleasure WHATEVER the outcome of each contest in our fantastic darts league, it is clear that everyone appears to enjoy his, or her, Friday night out. Waterfall welcomed Phoenix Bar, and, despite the 8-0 scoreline, many games were close, and enjoyed by all. Palms Pool Bar, entertaining Boothen at home, were on the wrong end of a 6-2 defeat. But Dale had his moment of glory with a 180, and the home crew’s Steve added another one to his tally. The Pub were on top form when Spearchuckers visited, and, with Grizzly’s 146 finish, they took a 5-3 win from the boys in the valley. The rest of Friday’s games finished allsquare, with the trebles earning the draw at each venue. At Gaffers,
Scruffy Macs looked like taking the honours, until their opponents pinched the half-share. Picasso’s travelled to Sundowners looking for a win, but they had to settle for 4-4 as they lost out in the final game. Tavern A travelled across the road to Emerald Lounge, who were ahead until the 701 game, in which The Tavern A triumphed for a fair result. Nauta teams Nutty’s and Nomads met, and fought keenly over the points, but it was Homes who took the bragging rights until the next battle, with not too much blood spilt. Tom, from Marilyn’s A, had a great night, his three perfect darts inspiring the team’s victory over Bar Leones. Loch-In B entertained Naughty Nautas in every sense, and a

Basketball
Baby and dad’s big show RODRIGO San Miguel will always remember Sunday, 19th January, because the Eurostar Tenerife player spent much of the early hours at the hospital awaiting the birth of his first child.
With immaculate timing, his wife produced Rodrigo Junior at noon, enabling the proud dad to get to La Laguna to play in the 77-59 win over Substantiates, of Madrid. That result guarantees Tenerife a place in the league’s top eight, as well as entry to the Copa del Rey finals in Gran Canaria, from 15-18th February. The draw paired Tenerife with Valencia in the quarter-finals.
Another 5,000 sellout crowd enjoyed a smooth win, with quarters of 18-14, 18-
12, 23-18, and 18-15. Mateusz Ponitka was unstoppable with 22 points, and it was
cigars all round from San Miguel, who added seven points… not bad for a weary dad! The weekend’s celebrations were tempered by confirmation that captain Nico Richotti’s ligament damage to his right leg will keep him out of action for 10 months. Replacement Josh Akognon made his debut on Wednesday, at home to Greek side PAOK Salonica in the European Champions
League. His 12-point haul helped Tenerife to a 93-79 win, to strengthen their place at the top of their qualifying group. The quarters were all home successes, 16-15, 30-24, 28-25, and 19-15. Davin White sat out this game as a precaution, after hurting tendons in the Sunday win, but Rosco Allen top-scored with 19 points, which was his best return since joining in the summer.

Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:
£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax
What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant.
