Puigdemont says: It’s all over now!

CARLES Puigdemont, the former Catalonia leader, has virtually thrown in the towel, following his long battle to establish his area as an independent entity.

Puigdemont (pictured), now in exile in Belgium, admits the Catalan Republic is finished, and that the Spanish Government’s plan is working.

In a series of four mobile phone messages, sent to former Regional Health Minister Toni Comín in Belgium, he wrote: “We are seeing the last days of republican Catalonia.

“I suppose you understand that this is over.

Tardà, interviewed by Spanish daily newspaper La Vanguardia, said: “If necessary, we’ll have to sacrifice Puigdemont, because Moncloa’s plan is working,” That was a reference to Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s

But a collective statement from Adeje’s José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, Arona’s José Julián Mena, and Pedro Martín, the Guia Isora Mayor, said: “This is an unacceptable situation.”

The trio, who met on Wednesday to discuss the situation, expressed “total rejection of the position, because it will mean the island is without flight connections at night”.

The statement adds: “The North Airport isn’t open during night-time hours, and now the South Airport is also going to close for three months.

“The island will be isolated, and the consequences for the residents, and for the tourism sector, will be

terrible. This is unacceptable.”

Rodríguez Fraga, Mena and Martín, who have no alternative solution for resurfacing the runway, which is why the airport must close, are asking the regional government, and Tenerife Cabildo, to explain the gravity of the issue to the relevant, national department for development.

That’s because, says their statement, “it will leave the people of Tenerife in a complicated situation”.

The Mayors have outlined the importance of the airport as a fundamental infrastructure for the South of the island, fundamental for the residents, and for the main, economic motor of Tenerife’s tourism.

“This is the thirdmost-profitable airport in Spain, with 11.2 million passengers, and more than 70 million euros in

income, annually.

“We cannot be treated in this way, and the decision has been taken with no regard for the importance of this time of year.”

The trio also pointed out how the closure served only to vindicate their support for a second runway.

They also said that the airport authority’s decision added to the list of examples of how the South of the island was badly treated by the regional government… “motorways, the public hospital, etc”.

Meanwhile, South Airport officials have made it clear that the airport will have to close at night, from 3rd April until 30th June, for runway repaving and maintenance, which will cost some 4.7 million euros.

And, they insist, no airline will be able to operate Tenerife flights during this time.

Footage of the messages, sent via the Signal messaging application, were captured by a Telecinco TV cameraman, and broadcast on a news-andchat programme, on Wednesday morning.

Puigdemont posted a Twitter message, confirming the veracity of the messages,

and admitting: “I am human, and there are moments when I have my doubts.”

He also said that, “as a journalist”, he believed there were “limits” to what could be published, and how the information could be obtained.

El Diario reported that Comín was preparing to take legal action against Telecinco, after it had broadcast

the messages, citing sources close to the politician.

But Pablo Suanzes, El Mundo’s correspondent in Brussels, reported that Comín knew he was the centre of media attention at the press conference in Laviana, after Puigdemont had cancelled his own appearance.

He added: “But he still picked up his mobile phone, opened the former First Minister’s messages, and, instead of leaning over the screen or covering it up, left it completely exposed, again and again, even after he had been warned by those with him.”

In the last of the four messages, Puigdemont said he would spend the rest of his life trying to restore order to the past two years, and to protecting his reputation.

“They have done me a lot of harm, with slander and rumour and lies, which I have put up with for a common goal,” he added.

“That is over now, and I will spend my life defending myself.”

Our benefits should be distributed more evenly, says Mayor

THE important events in which Costa Adeje took part during the Spanish tourism trade fair Fitur 2018, were diverse meetings and forums with professionals and representatives from the sector.

Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga was guest speaker at Fiturtech, organised by ITH, the Hotels’ Technology Institute.

Also in attendance were mayors from Spain’s main

tourism zones, along with members of the National Tourism Alliance: Arona, Benidorm, Calvía, Lloret de Mar, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Torremolinos.

And overseeing it all was ITH President Juan Molas.

Around 150 professionals attended the round-table event, looking at “the differentiation, as a formula, in the repositioning of pioneer destinations”.

Rodríguez Fraga used the opportunity to give a rundown of the main actions taken, and challenges dealt with, by Costa Adeje.

Drugs couple have been caught again A WOMAN aged 34 and a man, five years older, have been arrested by National Police officers in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas for being in possession of cocaine.

Police were stopping vehicles at a random check-

point and thought their behaviour appeared suspicious when they were questioned.

They searched their car and soon discovered that the couple were hiding 23gms of cocaine in it. It also turned out that the pair had previous police convictions for similar crimes.

The couple are awaiting court procedures.

“Adeje generates an important part of the island’s income, and contributes to the economy in a major way,” he said.

“But the share-out is not properly reflected.”

The Adeje Mayor said it was of primary importance that the share was more equitable, because, he stressed, “it is fundamentally important that in a destination such as ours, the local population see that they benefit from the industry they work in, and do so via better services, higher wages and better working conditions, commitment to training and quality of service”.

He added that local administrations “also have to work to ensure that this is the case, and, in that way, more people will want to work in the sector, giving of their best and being compensated properly for it”.

Rodríguez Fraga was also robust in his commitment to sustainability, regarding the development within the tourism destination.

“In Costa Adeje, it is

no longer a question of increasing the number of tourists coming here, but of maintaining the numbers, while improving the offer and the quality of the destination,” he said.

And when questioned about the new hotels being built in the borough, and the reformation taking place around Costa Adeje, he said: “In general, we are not looking to build new hotels. What we are concentrating on is the modernisation of our existing hotels, and the reformation of those that are obsolete.

“We are doing this hand-inhand with a business sector, which is committed to this idea of re-adapting. And, for us, the main objective is to achieve improved profitability, and thus create more jobs, with less pressure on what is a finite space.”

There was also an important discussion on the presence and role of new technology in the tourism industry.

And Rodríguez Fraga voiced his interest, saying: “Given that, innovations and the use of new technology has a lot to do with the overall sustainability and future projects in the borough.”

During the fair, throughout

various debates, a constant theme was the issue of legislation, and the funding of local administrations in tourism boroughs.

In this regard, the eight boroughs making up the national alliance, with over 400 million overnight stays between them, generate 11.21% of the country’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product).

“And that,” said the Adeje Mayor, “is something not reflected in the distribution of funds by, among others, the Finance Ministry”.

He added: “What concerns us is the fact that superior (national) administrations pass laws and impose regulations from above, without taking into account the problems and the solutions that arise, and which are dealt with at local level, often while lacking the proper resources to do so.”

Rodríguez Fraga, who is also President of the Canarian Association of Tourism Boroughs, agreed that regulation was important, but in a reasonable way, and that local administrations were given the tools to carry out the regulation.

“We are too used to the fact that they regulate too much and contribute too little,” he stressed.

Snow-boarders are operating on high!

SNOW has fallen all week on Tenerife’s high lands, and the old lady of Teide is again wearing her glorious white cape.

She may well have been surprised to see people snowboarding, and weather forecaster Aemet is predicting even more snow to come in Tenerife, as well as in La Gomera and Las Palmas.

The North road up to Teide was closed early on, but the workload of Tenerife’s Guardia Civil still intensified, and officers have had to rescue at least 30 vehicles, involving 70 people.

On Wednesday afternoon, the mountain rescue team came to the aid of five female athletes, who were isolated in Las Cañadas, in the upper area of La Orotava.

They were stranded in a cabin, unable to leave because their car was stuck in snow. But they were forced to move, eventually, because there were no amenities.

Gran Canaria’s roads

Chin-up for a baby penguin heading up to its summit were also closed earlier this week, because of a rare snowfall there, and barricades were put into place to prevent the public from unpredictable dangers.

People are ignoring these barriers, and, should they find themselves in trouble, have been warned that they will be charged the total expense of a rescue mission.

But people in the South, far removed from Mount Teide, have bathed in warm sunshine for the most part.

Heavy rain on Monday will have deterred them, but not for long because the sun was still shining yesterday, as we went to press.

As one resident said: “Tenerife must be one of the few places in the world where you can get frost bite and sun-stroke, on the same afternoon.”

LORO Parque penguins have welcomed a new member to the family - a Chinstrap Pigeon Penguin.

The species was brought to the park’s penguinarium two years ago, and the Chinstrap Pigeon was one of the first to be raised.

Naturally, the new baby has proved to be a huge success, especially because the whole reproduction with this species is delicate, and a real challenge.

The egg hatched in December and the baby weighed 88 grams. It remained in its hatchery during the first days.

Feeding, up to five times a day for its first six weeks, was carried out by hand. And the baby’s food comprised fish and porridge, along with vitamins and mineral supplements.

Now that he is reaching his seventh week, the newcomer is slowly being integrated with family members in his new, Planet Penguin, environment.

NEWS IN BRIEF Ryanair spend fortune Plumber’s deadly discovery

A PLUMBER, carrying out maintenance work at a Mallorcan villa, came across a corpse in an advanced state of decomposition.

The horrified workman discovered the body in a narrow gap where pipework runs, in Cala Lliteres, in the Capdepera municipality, and the Guardia Civil sealed off the area.

One theory is that it could be the remains of a German chef, who disappeared in nearby Cala Rajada last August.

Guardia officers, awaiting the autopsy results to determine the cause of death, are also investigating how the body got there.

Police nick phone thieves

THREE young women, two of whom are minors and the other one aged 22, have been arrested in Gran Canarias capital Las Palmas by the National Police.

A woman had reported to police that while she and another person were attending to a lady, who had fainted on a busy street, the trio stole their mobile phones.

The woman said that she and her helper were threatened with assault by the mini-gang, who wanted pin numbers for their stolen phones.

After tracking down the thieves, with help from the two phone victims, cops arrested the trio, the older of whom already had a police record.

They were charged with robbery and intimidation, and the 22-year-old’s case is pending court procedures, along with juvenile hearings for the two minors.

Kitesurfer hanging around

A KITESURFER, entangled in the approach lights at Lanzarote’s Arrecife airport, delayed the arrival of two planes, including an easyJet flight from Belfast.

The flights were forced to “go around” before, eventually, landing safely.

With the hashtag #SafetyFirst on their Twitter account, air-traffic controllers said the kitesurfer was entangled in the approach lights to runway 03, “partially covering them, and interfering with the approach to the runway”.

Both flights, the other one from Madrid, had to wait for the area to be cleared, before eventually landing without incident.

Luxury, drug-laden coach

TWO British men were arrested, after being accused of using a luxury coach to transport 17kg of cocaine, and hashish weighing 715kg.

Guardia Civil officers claimed the drugs, with a total street value of 1.7m euros, were hidden in secret compartments on the coach, which featured British number plates.

It was stopped on the AP-7 toll road by officers from Puçol, in the Valencia region, and the two men, aged 39 and 59, were accused of drug-trafficking.

An International Arrest Warrant has also been issued for the owner of the coach company.

on new summer routes

RYANAIR will create a new ManchesterAlmeria route this summer, as part of a £210,170,000 investment in its Manchester Airport operation.

The airline plans to buy three new planes for its peak June-September schedule, and will create 10 new routes, including the one to Almeria.

Investment in the schedule is set to add 300,000 more seats to the company’s Manchester-based fleet… all part of its plan to increase the number of flights heading to summer

destinations, including Tenerife, and at a lower cost to passengers.

Kenny Jacobs, of Ryanair, says tickets for the new routes are already available online, adding: “We will deliver an exciting set of new Manchester summer routes, some of which are connecting to the city for the first time.”

Manchester Airport’s Julian Carr said the scheme would help create jobs in and around the city. “We look forward to the routes starting, and the added international connectivity they offer our 27.8 million passengers,” he added.

The new routes bring the total of Ryanair’s Manchester summer routes

to 57, and the investment is expected to create almost 3,700 new jobs.

It means the company will fly twice weekly to Agadir, Almeria, Barcelona Reus, Cagliari, Palermo and Rhodes.

Also included in the plans is a daily flight to Belfast from March, and a weekly flight to Ponta Delgada, as well as three weekly flights to Porto and Venice Treviso.

There will also be more flights to existing destinations, such as Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, and also Ibiza, Mallorca, Alicante, Bologna, Chania, Faro, Lisbon, Malaga and Naples.

Creative Women’s exhibition chance ADEJE Council has opened registration for artists wishing to take part in the seventh Art Collective, Adeje Creative Women, and they can register immediately.

The exhibition, run annually

by Adeje Council, in parallel with events celebrating International Women’s Day, takes place next month.

Some 46 artists took part in 2017, and the exhibition is again open to professional and amateur painters in the Canary Islands, who can present works in a multitude of artistic disciplines: paint, sculpture, photography, graphic design, recordings, etc. Only one entry per

artist will be accepted. The final selection will be made on the basis of quality, technique and originality, chosen by an expert tribunal, comprising professionals from the art world.

They will also choose an overall winning entry, and the artist(s) will be given the option of an individual or group show at Adeje Cultural Centre in 2019.

The exhibition, which will also produce a virtual catalogue of artists and their works, will be covered in the borough’s social networks and media.

Spanish-French link is essential THE European Union is investing 578 million euros in the new electricity interconnection between Spain and France, that will pass through the Bay of Biscay.

It will increase the inter-connection capacity between the two countries to 5,000MW, providing greater integration for the Iberian Peninsula in the internal electricity market. It will also be essential for the development of renewable energy sources.

This infrastructure represents an important milestone in doing away with the Iberian Peninsula’s isolation from the rest of the European energy market.

The market’s full interconnection is essential for increasing the security of supply in Europe, reducing the dependence of sole providers, and offering consumers a greater choice.

The Spanish Government has always advocated energy inter-connections to ensure

that it can comply, on an equal footing with other Member States, with the EU’s energy and climate targets.

Right now, there is a 2.8% electricity inter-connection between France and Spain, including the latest installation between Santa Llogaia

(Gerona) and Baixas (Perpignan). With the completion of the project through the Bay of Biscay, the level of inter-connection will rise to 5%, and, with the other two projects through the Pyrenees, through Aragon, as well as Navarre, this will reach

8%. This connection will be 370km long between the Basque Country and Aquitaine (110km in Spain and 260km in France), of which 90km are land-based and the other 280km underwater.

The cable is scheduled to be operational in the year 2025.

The costly project adds up to 1.75 billion euros, and national regulators had agreed for the two countries to share the costs equally.

But, as a result of this EU funding, Spain will finance around 37% of the project.

The EU highlights that the 578-million-euro subsidy of the Spain-France link-up is the highest granted, to date, by the Connecting Europe Facility.

For that reason, the Government genuinely values the backing from European funding, which underlines the technical and economic soundness of the project.

This EU support demonstrates the importance of the internal electricity market, and its infrastructures, in building the European project.

Heart attack kills swimmer

AN 80-year-old British pensioner lost his life after suffering a heart attack while swimming at the Playa Flamingo beach, in the south of Lanzarote.

Emergency services were called to the white-sand beach, but the efforts of paramedics from two ambulances were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Motorbike collision A NASTY road accident happened on Monday afternoon on the TF65, which runs from San Miguel town to Las Chafiras and beyond.

A motorcyclist, 32, struck a 29-yearold pedestrian on a zebra-crossing, and an ambulance team were dispatched to give urgent medical attention to both men.

The motorcyclist’s hips were damaged, while the pedestrian suffered moderate head injuries.

Both were taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment and observation, while the Guardia Civil are investigating the collision.

Cost of Spanish wine sure to rise this year Police get their hands on slippery customers AN illegal shipment of live eels, weighing 20kg, has been seized at Malaga’s Costa del Sol airport

by Guardia Civil investigators.

SPAIN’S production of wine last year, down 20% compared with the 2016 figures, will almost certainly lead to price increases.

The Agriculture Ministry reports that the total wine produced in the current 2017-18 vintage stands at 35.6 million hectolitres, compared with 44 million in 2016, which is a 19.6% drop.

Overall, 2017 production is 19.6% lower than the

previous season, and 17.6% lower than the previous six seasons’ average.

A Ministry statement said: “The declarations confirm a campaign of relatively-low production, which, together with the low productions of the main wine countries of the community, suggests a price increase in the market.”

The latest figures follow what has been a challenging year for producers throughout Europe, with late spring frosts and a widespread drought, as well as a heat-

wave then affecting large swathes of France, Spain and Italy.

The price rise comes as a blow to wine-drinkers, but the European Commission said last October that it expected European production to be at a 36year low.

Figures predicted then that Italy would suffer a 23% drop, France 19% and Spanish production 15%. The latest figures from Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, however, push that estimate to 19.6%.

They pounced on four suspicious suitcases, after they had been checked in for a flight to Hong Kong via Zürich, in Switzerland.

And, after tracking down the Chinese owners of the luggage, officers found 22 bags containing the young eels, or elvers, inside.

The owners were unable to provide documentation permitting the export of the fish, which are a protected species in Europe, following the 90% decline of stocks over the last 40 years.

Young eels are a highlyvalued delicacy in the Asian market, with prices reaching a staggering 1,500 euros per kilo.

Honestly officers, we picked them to eat…

LOCAL Police officers in Sevilla had their most fruitful day in years, when they stopped vehicles carrying more than 4,000 kilos of oranges, which, said the occupants, were for their family to eat!

Suspicions were raised when three vehicles, in close convoy, were spotted being driven suspiciously, and a police chase ensued along a dirt track.

Five members of the same family were found squeezed into the car and a van, which were eventually intercepted.

A couple were travelling with their adult son in the car, and two of his brothers were in the van.

WE are always so grateful to our resident vets, for their hard work and dedication to the dogs at the refuge, many of whom arrive in extremely-bad condition.

They claimed they had picked the oranges “from the ground, and that they were for their own consumption”.

After searching the area, cops later found the third vehicle, which was also

jam-packed with the fruit.

The juicy haul was believed to have been stolen from a ship in Carmona, in the Sevilla province, from which the theft had been reported a few hours earlier.

Some have serious injuries that need immediate treatment, like this poor dog who was brought here with a broken leg. He is on the mend, but we would like to find him a foster home, where he will be looked after until he is fit, and well enough to be adopted.

Blow the Germans, we’ve booked our sunshine spot HOLIDAY company Thomas Cook has launching a new service for customers, ‘Choose your Favourite Sunbed’, which will not please many of the German tourists staying at their hotels!

The scheme allows customers to pre-book sunbeds in the company’s resorts, especially in the Canary Islands.

For 25 euros (£22), holidaymakers can book a sunlounger for the length of their stay, up to six days before they take off.

That will prevent those battles over the best spots, and save Germans their traditional early-morning forays to the poolside, plus wear and tear on their towels.

Thomas Cook expects the idea to be popular, especially with families who want to make sure they can spend more time together.

The company will test the service at three of its ownbrand Canarian hotels, in Lanzarote, Gran Canaria

and Fuerteventura, from the end of this month.

If successful, the service will be rolled out to 30 hotels by the summer, and, under the scheme, up to 20% of sunbeds will be bookable, leaving the rest free for early-risers.

Chris Mottershead, Thomas Cook’s UK Managing Director, said: “Traditional package holidays are a thing of the past. Following the successful launch of

‘Choose Your Room’ last summer, which attracted more than 10,000 bookings during the trial phase, our ‘Choose Your Favourite Sunbed’ is part of our wider commitment to innovating today’s package holiday, and adapting to the needs of the modern traveller.

“Holiday-makers today want to personalise their package, mixing and matching the elements that best fit their needs and lifestyle.

“Our recently-launched ‘Early Check In’ deal is proving popular. And we’re also excited about our ‘Choose your Favourite Sunbed’, particularly among families who want to secure a number of beds together in a specific spot.”

And the company’s ‘Choose Your Room’ scheme will also be available in 300 hotels this summer, costing 30 euros per apartment.

Teenager threatened his mum with kitchen knife A BOY aged 15 was arrested by National Police in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, after threatening his mother and her partner with a kitchen knife.

The mother actually made a police report about his behaviour in the family home, in Llanos de Maria Rivera.

Trouble flared after the teenager was expelled from school for bad behaviour, and his mum punished him by confiscating his mobile phone.

That was when the boy grabbed the knife and threatened the couple so intensely that, for their own safety, they were forced to flee the house.

Upon arrival, the police inspected the premises for damage, and then arrested the minor for “crime, with threats”.

The case is now in the hands of the juvenile courts.

Pigeons sowing the seeds of a rebellion

RESIDENTS from El Ramonal, in the Santa Cruz borough, must feel they are in a scene from Alfred Hitchcock’s film thriller, The Birds.

Neighbours say that so many pigeons congregate on their rooftops every day, it would be impossible to count the number.

For the record, though, the situation isn’t new, say workers and neighbours in El Ramonal. The pigeons have always been a nuisance, and it’s down to certain neighbours, who have been feeding them for years.

They used to feed them on the street, but that changed when fines were imposed, and, since then, the feeders

have moved to the windows of their apartments and the terraces.

The nearby petrol station, which is affected most by the pigeon plague, has had the water and air pumps hidden under a makeshift roof, so that customers who use the service station don’t get splatted on.

The Santa Cruz Councillor for Environmental Health says he is aware of the situation. A plan of action has been put in place, he adds, and a pestcontrol company has been contracted.

Yet Seranco, which specialises in pest-control, has received a Santa Cruz Council payment of 361,125 euros for its “neccessary services” across the Tenerife capital.

Baby sperm whale’s comes to a sad end

A BABY sperm whale was found, washed up, on Almagia beach, Santa Cruz, early on Tuesday. Studies suggest that these incidents happen because of the maritime traffic volume, both commercial and industrial, which can affect some deep-diving species, especially the sperm whales.

Bar thief on camera

GUARDIA Civil officers arrested a 36-year-old man for breaking into a Candelaria bar and stealing the contents of two cash registers.

The foreign national, who lives in the municipality, was captured on security cameras, smashing a back window in the early hours to get in, and helping himself to the cash.

The case is under court procedures at Güímar.

Sex offender caught again NATIONAL Police have arrested a man for an alleged sexual assault on a woman, at her Adeje home last Wednesday.

The woman was alone when the man, who was known to her, got in through the back door and hid in a room.

He surprised his intended victim eventually, and she tried to flee the house.

But he dragged her back inside, and sexually assaulted her.

Some hours later, she filed a complaint to the police, who were familiar with the attacker, having arrested him last month for similar crimes.

The Guardia Civil are dealing with the case, but, in the meantime, the man has been tagged and is under police surveillance.

AN Indian man was killed last Saturday after being sucked into an MRI machine at a Mumbai Hospital, according to Indian news broadcaster NDTV. Rajesh Maru, 32, was helping an elderly relative at BYL Nair Charitable Hospital, when he entered the MRI room with a metal oxygen tank.

An MRI machine is a powerful tool, used to create medical imaging of human anatomies, with strong magnetic fields and radio waves. And metal objects are supposed to be removed when an MRI is in use.

A hospital employee, described as a “ward boy”, told Maru that it was fine to bring the tank inside, and that the MRI machine was off.

Spain’s old folk have never had it so good!

RETIRED Spaniards, aged 66-75, have a 6% higher income than the national average of workers, according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Among the Organisation’s 35 member states, this age group earns 7% less after retirement. But, in Spain, the opposite happens!

It is an atypical case, surpassed only by France, where pensioners in the 6675 age bracket make 10% more than the national average. Yet, in 2006, this age group’s income was 19% below average.

In this time, their relative income has advanced 25 points, reflecting a combination of wage devaluation, high jobless rates, guaranteed pensions and better lifetime contributions to Social Security.

In Spain, wages are around 6,500 euros lower than the OECD average, which goes some way to explaining the higher income enjoyed by the Spanish pensioners.

The figure also fails to take into account individual situations: retirement checks range from 550-2,500 euros,

and, says the OECD, 70% of pensioners’ income comes from this source, and the rest from other sources.

Additionally, if all retired Spaniards are taken into account, and not just those in the 66-75 sector, the average income then falls to 1% below the national average.

This is partly because those 75 and over are often women with a lower lifetime contribution to the welfare system, who live on widows’ pensions.

Economist Diego Barceló said: “While wage-earnings as a share of GDP retreated 3.3% between 2008 and 2017, earnings from pensions and safety-net

programmes grew 34.9%.

“That is to say, the rise in family income is mostly down to pensions, and, right now, there are 1.1 million more pensioners than in 2008.”

The Spanish Government has always said that pensions helped many households make it through the economic crisis, and a report by BBVA Research supports this claim.

Consumption has not fallen as much as income, thanks to money transfers from relatives earning a “social programme” cheque. And, in the absence of Spain’s strong poverty-alleviation programme, pensions have become a tool to make up

After hitting the machine, Maru’s entire body was swollen and he began bleeding profusely, according to broadcaster NDTV. He was taken to the emergency room, where he died shortly after.

Last Sunday, police arrested Chavan, attending doctor Siddhant Shah and ward attendant Sunita Surve, in connection with the death.

The hospital is also investigating the incident.

EU comments on Brexit reversal boost GBP

POUND Sterling was able to race to multimonth highs over the past 14 days, thanks to improving outlooks on UK monetary policy and Brexit.

The lowest point for GBP/ EUR, during the past fortnight, was seen right at the start of the period, when the pairing was at 1.1229 euros. The pairing hit an eight-month high of 1.1502, on the 25th.

GBP/USD started the fortnight down around US$1.3919, but struck a post-referendum high of US$1.4321, on the 25th.

EUR/GBP trended between a low of £0.8693 and a high of £0.8813.

EUR/USD, meanwhile, rose from a low of US$1.2232, to hit US$1.2516 on the 25th.

The pound struggled to get out of the starting blocks, a fortnight ago, after consumer price data released on the 16th showed that core price growth had slowed further than expected, from 2.7% to 2.5%, during December. Things picked up in the latter half of the week for Sterling,

with what seemed to be a co-ordinated attempt,

by EU officials, to woo the UK into changing its mind, regarding Brexit.

First, European Council President Donald Tusk stated that the UK could still change its mind, then the European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker claimed that Great Britain could always use Article 49 of the Lisbon Treaty, to re-join the bloc after Brexit, if it wanted to.

Thursday 18th saw an aide for French President Emmanuel Macron claim that France would always look kindly upon the UK, should it decide to change its mind and reverse Brexit.

Sterling was supported higher on Wednesday 24th by a shock 102,000 increase in employment during the three months to November 2017, as well as a surprise uptick in the pace of average -weekly- earnings growth, to 2.4%. Analysts claimed this would put more pressure on the Bank of England (BoE) to raise interest rates, pushing GBP higher.

GBP/EUR was able to hit an eight-month high, and GBP/USD its best levels since the Brexit referendum, on Thursday 25th, after US President Donald Trump told Prime

Minister Theresa May that he expected to see a strong rise in UK-US trade, in the future. This helped allay fears that the UK would struggle to secure trade deals after Brexit.

The first key event to watch out for on the economic calendar will be BoE Governor Mark Carney’s annual appearance before the Lords Economic Affairs Committee on Tuesday, to discuss the economy and the impact of Brexit.

Markit PMIs on Thursday 1st February, Friday 2nd and Monday 5th will give an indication as to the strength of the UK economy, as it entered 2018.

The following week sees the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) announce its latest, stimulus decisions, when its meeting concludes on Thursday 8th. No changes are expected at this meeting, but markets are hoping that policymakers could signal that a hike is likely, in the next few months.

Of course, as well as the economic-data calendar, there will also be the ongoing Brexit negotiations, and the political volatility this is causing for Theresa May’s Prime Ministership, to keep the pound on turbulent form. While these events are unpredictable, it’s safe to

In February 1993 an unprecedented crime shocked Britain and reverberated around the world. Denise’s son, two-year-old James Bulger was abducted from a shopping centre in Liverpool and brutally murdered by two 10-year-old boys. Trevor McDonald broke the news to the nation in his role as anchor of ITV’s News at Ten. The story was one of the most disturbing of his long and distinguished career. He says: “I remember reporting the James Bulger case as a presenter for News At Ten all those years ago. What I’ll never forget is the sense of horror at those CCTV images that showed James being led away.”

Meet the Ellis family - John, Lesley, Caitlin, Freya and Harvey. Over the course of one summer the Ellis family will travel Back in Time to discover how life has changed for ordinary working families in the north of England over the last 100 years.

Starting in 1918 they’ll experience first-hand the lives of previous generations, from the food people ate to the jobs they did and how they kicked back and enjoyed themselves.

In episode one the First World War has just ended and the North is on the cusp of great transformation.

Presenter Sara Cox and social historian Polly Russell introduce the family to 1918 living: their spacious home has been halved to become a traditional two up two down, they’re wearing clogs to work and dining on bread and lard - or tripe if they’re lucky.

In South Korea Team GB will be confident of adding to its historic 26 Winter Olympic medals - thanks in part to a doubling of Winter Sport funding from £13.5m in Sochi to £29.7m.

The medal target for GB of between four and eight medals is higher than ever and Clare meets two of the main hopes in Elise Christie and Lizzy Yarnold.

After the heartbreak of being disqualified three times in Sochi and suffering online abuse, Elise will look for redemption in the short track speed skating. Meanwhile in the Skeleton Bob, Lizzy aims to become the first Briton to retain a Winter Olympic gold as she makes a comeback after taking a year out of the sport.

Also in the programme Sochi Olympic slopestyle bronze medallist Jenny Jones meets Yorkshire 20-year-old Katie Ormerod, who is set to challenge in the new Big Air event and the Snowboard Slopestyle.

In the alpine events, Dave Ryding became the first Briton for 36 years to claim a World Cup medal when he made the slalom podium in Kitzbuhel in 2017. Former Olympian Chemmy Alcott meets the Lancashire skier, whose incredible underdog story includes learning to ski on a dry slope in Pendle.

Chemmy also meets American alpine star Lindsey Vonn, who will attempt to win a second Olympic gold in Pyeongchang.

Finally Clare meets Winter Olympic ice dancing legends Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean who relive their golden moment in Sarajevo 1984 before looking at the UK’s oddly ingrained fascination with winter sport since the Games inception in Chamonix 1924.

Nigel Slater’s Middle East: Lebanon e c i o BBC2, 21.00 ch In a brand new series Nigel Slater embarks on a Middle Eastern food adventure, exploring some of the oldest and grandest cuisines in the world.

His first stop, Lebanon, exemplifies Levantine cuisine but is also influenced by its position on the Mediterranean. The flavours, colours and fragrances of the region have travelled the globe, but Nigel sets out to eat and cook with the people who make the dishes every day - home cooks. He also explores the landscapes and ingredients which define the recipes and dishes that have been passed on through generations.

Nigel starts his journey in the capital Beirut at the end of Ramadan, where he is invited to celebrate Eid with a local family, before travelling west to the Beqaa Valley close to the Syrian border and South to Nabatieh near Israel.

On his journey, Nigel explores the resilience of the country and its people, their survival and preservation through decades of war, and sees how this is reflected in their pride in their culture - and most importantly in their food.

Set in 1968, the new series of ITV’s Inspector Morse prequel sees acclaimed actor Shaun Evans return as the recently promoted Detective Sergeant Endeavour Morse.

With each film once again written by series creator Russell Lewis, the new series begins with Morse having finally passed his Sergeant’s exams just as Oxford City Police merges into Thames Valley Constabulary creating uncertainty for everyone at Cowley CID. And despite Joan Thursday (Sara Vickers) return to Oxford, much also remains unresolved following her disappearance the previous year and Endeavour’s unexpected proposal.

Also returning will be Roger Allam (The Missing) as Detective Chief Inspector Fred Thursday, Anton Lesser (The Crown) as Chief Superintendent Reginald Bright, Dakota Blue Richards (Skins) as WPC Shirley Trewlove, Sean Rigby (Gunpowder) as Sergeant Jim Strange, James Bradshaw (Primeval) as Dr. Max DeBryn, Caroline O’Neil (Last Tango In Halifax) as Win Thursday and Abigail Thaw (I Want My Wife Back) as Dorothea Frazil. The series also sees the arrival of new recruit Detective Constable George Fancy, played by Lewis Peek (Poldark), whom Morse is reluctantly tasked with mentoring.

Other names who guest star in the upcoming series include Donald Sumpter (Game Of Thrones), Phil Daniels (New Tricks), Emma Rigby (Prisoners’ Wives), Steve Elder (Apple Tree Yard) and Robin Weaver (Call The Midwife).

The new films have been executive produced by Russell Lewis, alongside former Endeavour producer Tom Mullens, Mammoth Screen’s Managing Director Damien Timmer and Rebecca Eaton for WGBH. John Phillips (Stan Lee’s Lucky Man) and Neil Duncan (Fortitude) have produced the new series.

Belgian Property Fair success PREMIER Properties Tenerife attended, from 20th-21st January, their first overseas Property Fair in Waregem, Belgium.

The Real Estate Fair Spain Expofair takes place three times a year, and is aimed at those who plan to acquire a second property in Spain as an investment, or just to spend their holidays here, as well as those who already own or live here, who are seeking some advice in a variety of property-related issues.

There were approximately 30 exhibitors at the Fair, with over 2,000 visitors, each exhibitor specialising in a particular region in Spain, or a particular type of property, which makes the Spain Expofair unique.

Premier Properties Tenerife were the only representatives for Tenerife, and we had an overwhelming response! Miryoku Van Winckel is Flemish, and our youngest team member.

She was able to explain to the attendees, in great detail, all the benefits,

(which you and I now take for granted!) of owning property here in Tenerife, and elaborated on the different areas, the various tourism opportunities, imparting a wealth of knowledge about the fabulous property market.

Miryoku was well prepared for the event, with a huge variety of posters, leaflets, business cards and brochures, and she charmed the thousands of visitors at the Fair.

She imparted knowledge about the purchasing

process here in Tenerife, including how we guide our clients through the purchasing experience, every step of the way, from obtaining NIE numbers with them, assisting with the opening of bank accounts, arranging necessary trans-

lations, the preparation of legal documents, and, of course, how we spend time with them, finding their dream home, here in the sun!

Visitors from all of Belgium attended the two-day Fair in Waregem, and Miryoku was able to impress them with her knowledge of the vast array of properties which Premier Properties Tenerife have available.

We have properties ranging from studio apartments, penthouses, duplex properties, fincas and villas, in an array of differing locations from beachfront to mountainside, touristic areas to tranquil retreats, and all for purchase at fantastic prices.

Miryoku was kept very busy, with a constant stream of clients wishing to make arrangements for viewings and appointments with her, to come to Tenerife throughout the coming year.

This was the first of the overseas events being scheduled by Premier Properties Tenerife for 2018.

Carnival 2018: Opening Parade

The queen’s costume, her maids of honour and the Carnival groups take on a whole new level when you see them in the flesh parading down the streets of Santa Cruz. The magic of getting up-close is what the audience experiences when they attend the great Opening Parade of the Carnival.

The city’s main streets are closed off for a few hours to host a true spectacle of colour and joy. The parade encompasses the best of what has already happened and what is yet to come at the Carnival. Taking part are the murgas, comparsas, rondallas and music bands, together with the winners of the individual and group costume awards. And behind them are a whole host of carnival-goers dressed in all kinds of wacky outfits, from those thrown together at the last-minute to the most elaborate, ready to face the many nights of festivities ahead.

The show gathers people of all ages. Traditionally, children are allowed to put on their costumes in the morning and wear them to school. Plus, in the city itself, most of the schools close early so that the kids can make the most of the festive fun. This shows just how much the city transforms during two weeks, enthralling locals, Islanders and visitors from all over the world.

The Blue Fairy wants to reward Gepeto by making his dream come true and bring to life his most beloved puppet: Pinocchio.

This adaptation includes songs, elements and characters that enrich the story and allow the family to enjoy a colorful staging.

The Carnival gets under way officially in the first week of February, with the presentation of the contestants for the Carnival Queen. Colour and Greek Mythology, this year’s theme will inundate the streets of Puerto de la Cruz until Sunday 18 February, when the proceedings come to an end with the traditional closing dance. Important highlights include the Burial of the Sardine (Ash Wednesday), the closing Coso parade - which takes place the following Saturday and features numerous spontaneous groups, floats, dancing troupes, satirical singers, and Carnival delegations from other countries - and the Men’s High-Heels Race, a hilarious and fun-filled obstacle race in which hundreds of men don fancy dress and heels at least 8cm high to run along the cobbled streets.

Restaurant review: Fusion Restaurant, Amarilla Golf

Tasty dining… choice show!

I HAVE fancied going to this restaurant for some time, and, along with a guest, I was so pleased to dine there, and also watch one of the newest shows to hit the island.

It’s The Carol King Musical, the music that inspired the soundtrack of a generation, performed by Carol Slater, and we both were delighted with the food and the entertainment.

Fusion restaurant, in Amarilla Golf, just past the reception to Fairways Club, is well-lit from the outside, and is also modern and roomy inside.

This is one of only a few restaurants in the Golf area serving 100% fresh and local produce, which includes meats from established Los Abrigos butcher Giuseppe, and every item is produced organically, and wellmatured.

This, coupled with Fusion’s fully-qualified, passionate chef, lets them create some amazing dishes.

We were shown to our table

by a friendly, happy waitress, and were given both the wine and food menus. We decided on a bottle of house red, which was reasonably priced, delivered to our table and poured. Our food order was then taken.

We chose two different starters, which were varied, colourful, infinitely moreish, and, best of all, seasoned perfectly, with generous portions.

My companion had the Camembert, which was lightly-breaded and goldenfried, served with a side blackcurrant marmalade, which really brought out the cheese flavour.

For me it was the Piri Piri King Prawns, marinated in garlic and home-made Piri Piri mix, and perfectly sautéed, with a lemon to pull out the flavours from the succulent flesh.

This was served with garlic butter, alioli and fresh bread, and, to be honest, it really was a meal in itself!

For our mains, I went for the Chicken Supreme and my

guest the Salmon, served with a pepper sauce. And, just like our starters, the food was delivered to our table with a smile, and presented perfectly.

My chicken, which tasted succulent, was served with a mustard-and-mushroom sauce, together with fresh, colourful vegetables.

The salmon, even though thick in some parts, was cooked evenly throughout, very flaky, and you could taste the freshness, as with all that we had, and it was served with a bright, inviting salad. Needless to say, the plates went back empty!

For dessert, two simple choices were made: the chocolate fudge cake for my companion, and the lemon cheesecake for me, both finishing off our meals perfectly.

Then, with perfect timing, the entertainment started as soon as our plates were

cleared. We really didn’t know what to expect because we knew nothing about Carol King, or what she sang.

But others in the restaurant did, and, as Carol took to the stage, fully dressed as this legend, the restaurant diners welcomed her with applause.

Right from the start, we were told what we were going to get, and that was the history of Carol King.

To our surprise, we knew quite a few of the songs performed: maybe not by the original artist, but by others who have covered her songs. Songs like (You Make Me Feel Like A Natural Woman and Locomotion).

Not only does Carol use backing tracks for the show, but she also plays the piano, giving you the total feel of what Carol King was about.

I must say that we both enjoyed the show totally,

and we even had a few couples in the restaurant having a go at a dance-off at the side of the stage.

If you get the chance, do see this show at Fusion Restaurant, because I don’t believe you will be disappointed.

By Val Sainsbury FAMILIES are opting for easy-to-eat, sugar-packed products, which pack out supermarket shelves, to the detriment of youngsters’ health.

Nutritionist María Merino, author of the blog Comiendo con María (Eating with María), would never have believed that a tweet about her son’s breakfast would go viral.

But a picture of her child with the caption: “My son doesn’t know what a biscuit is. He is happy to start the day with a bowl of chickpeas”, sparked a fierce Twitter debate about breakfast nutrition, with many users defending giving their children biscuits for breakfast.

In fact, many people still believe, incorrectly, that pulses are synonymous with obesity. They associate them with Madrid’s fatty,

cooked stew, even though nutritionists have said for years that this really isn’t the case.

Despite what most people think, though, Spanish kids are eating bad breakfasts.

That we are still surprised when we hear about a child who doesn’t start the day with chocolate milk and biscuits, is a clear sign that there is a lack of information concerning nutrition.

This is so evident from obesity statistics and data on sugar consumption.

Chocolate milk, chocolate spreads, baked goods, processed fruit juice and sugary cereals have turned breakfast into a terrible meal to start the day.

Paediatrician Carlos Casabona, a specialist in children’s nutrition, and author of You Choose What You Eat, agrees.

After years of observing what kids passing through his clinic eat for breakfast, he wrote about it on his blog, in which he discussed how we have accepted biscuits, of “zero nutritional interest,” as a normal product to eat daily.

“Parents opt for quickand-easy solutions, such

as chocolate milk or sugary cereals, which the industry has shoved onto shelves, and into the faces of their children,” he said.

For Casabona, the main issue is that children’s breakfasts have not evolved: “They haven’t changed in 25 to 40 years, ever since people discovered the family-sized packs of biscuits,” he said.

He calls these oversized products “obesogenic packages” rather than “money-saving packages”, because, in his opinion, having a great quantity of an unhealthy product at home means that you will eat more of it, than if the packaging were a normal size.

Spain not only imports a good number of unhealthy foods, like the breakfast ce-

reals Casabona mentioned earlier, but it also has marketing techniques that include catchy slogans and jingles.

These have eased their way into family households so comfortably, and have survived over the years, sending the same message to generations of children and also to their parents!

Casabona agrees with Ms Manera’s belief that “breakfast is just another meal in the day, so choosing to place it above all other meals is absurd”. He said: “There is no clear, welldesigned study to prove that skipping breakfast will cause a dip in our children’s health.

“In general, opinion polls show that children who eat breakfast tend to be more

methodical than other kids who don’t.”

But isn’t it better for a child to eat whatever he likes for breakfast, as opposed to eating nothing at all?

“Not even close,” argued Casabona. “It is better not to have any breakfast than to eat an unhealthy one, since, about 90-120 minutes later, they can snack on whole-wheat bread and fruit at school.”

Juan Revenga observed: “If your breakfast doesn’t look like the one in the ads, it’s a healthy meal,” and he encouraged parents to change the mentality of what “breakfast” really is all about.

“If children wish to eat breakfast at home, they can start the day with freshly-sliced fruit,” added Revenga. “They can also drink a glass of whole milk, or have a yogurt.”

And Casabona said: “You don’t have to lose your head if your child wants to eat pasta or chickpeas, or lentils and rice, for breakfast.

“Actually, in many other parts of the world, this is what people have, and it appears to work very well for them.”

If you are temporarily on the island, you can meet with the various contractors together, but, if you are not, the designer can do so on your behalf, as well as being the keyholder, and co-ordinating access to the property.

Fortunately, nowadays, it’s possible to communicate with photos, videos and even live streaming, so you can keep complete control over the project, and how it is

progressing in your absence. Your interior designer can also assist with the choice of tiles and appliances, and oversee the work, reporting back, as, and when, necessary.

When the building work, or refurbishment, is complete, he or she can also organise the cleaning and the furnishing of the property, so that when you arrive, you are ready to move into your new home.

This can even include things like kitchen and linen packs, so that

your property is ready to live in, right down to the last towel and tea spoon.

This project-management side of the interior designer’s work is something that has developed, to meet the needs of people who are not always on the island, and it has proved a cost-effective solution, providing complete peace of mind.

Whether you just need some decorating to be done, or to refurbish a kitchen or bathroom, or the whole house, why not consider using your interior designer as your project manager, at the same time?

You may be surprised how economical this is, and how much stress it will relieve! And, of course, your project will be completed earlier than if you had to keep returning to the island, thus saving you extra expense.

Milla debut gives hope CD Tenerife 0 Valladolid 0

IT was like getting a lock-in at the Last Chance Saloon, because this home draw restored a little pride, giving under-fire coach Pep Marti another stay of execution.

He made changes, with Luiz Perez ousting Raul Camara at right-back, and Tayron getting another start up front. But the player everyone wanted to see was new, attacking midfielder Luis Milla.

The 500,000-euro signing was played very deep, in front of the defence, which was the same tactic Pep employed last season

when Kaku arrived. He then pushed him forward over the next few games.

Milla, who looked hungry to get involved, covered the width of the pitch to

find good positions to fire up the play.

But the big problem is still up front, and all the creativity in the world won’t help if the

CDT’s stop-start transfer window IT’S the time of year when football directors are spotted with mobile phones glued to their ears.

The January transfer window offers a chance of redemption for clubs’ stuttering seasons, and CD Tenerife have had a hectic last few days trying to snare their targets.

Attacking midfielder Luis Milla, who had been secured the week before for 500,000 euros from Fuenlabrada, made a good debut on Sunday. But their 0-0 draw showed that a forward was a big priority.

Former home favourite Nano was the main hope.

The La-Laguna-born striker, sold to Eibar for 3.2m euros in August 2016, has had a torrid time with a broken leg, and then a struggle to nail a regular starting place.

The terms of the sale included first option to Tenerife if Eibar decided to loan him out. But they refused, even though Nano was anxious to come home.

In the end, they loaned him to Sporting Gijon after wasting a lot of Tenerife’s time and effort.

But CDT had also been

working on other eggs in other baskets, and were pleased to land Alex Mula, a 21-year-old rightwinger and striker, on loan, initially, to the end of the season.

The Espanyol-born player had a good goal-scoring record in his first seasons with Malaga, and has made

12 senior appearances for them this season in the Primera.

After yesterday’s arrival in Tenerife, he will have had a full medical, and, having been presented to the media, should be available to play a part in their match at Granada tomorrow (Saturday).

Malbasic and Casadesus again showed they were not quick or decisive enough in the final third of the field, and Tayron looked ordinary, at best.

Dani Hernandez didn’t have too much to do in the home goal, but he showed better reflexes this week as he mopped up a couple of half-chances.

Former home favourite Moyano put the ball in the Tenerife net just before the break. But the ref was quick to rule it offside, to restore Pep Marti’s heartbeat.

The second half lost a little pace, with Tayron making way for Suso, who at least added a brief presence to the always-neglected left side - a problem, which still needs addressing.

Juan Villar emerged from his latest injury absence to replace the ineffectual Malbasic, and, if fully fit, would go a long way to

solving the forward problems.

He again showed glimpses of what he can do, getting in behind defenders, and he popped a shot just wide.

One of the biggest criticisms of coach Marti is how he persists with certain players, while others hardly get a look-in.

Juan Carlos Real didn’t get on the pitch until 80 minutes had gone. He always adds new options down the right, but Alberto, one of the few players to emerge with any credit from the Barcelona B nightmare, didn’t get a sniff of the action.

Valladolid seemed fairly content to take a draw, their best attempt of the second half being a raid by Hervias, which Dani coped with easily.

Bryan Acosta tried a hopeful floated cross-cum-shot, but Masip plucked it out of the air at the far post.

In the final minutes, Jorge Saenz was sent off for a second booking, which looked harsh, and Tenerife will appeal. If not, he will miss the match at Granada 7.30pm tomorrow (Saturday).

Fellow-defender Camille definitely misses out after topping up his bookings earlier in the game.

There was some booing at the end of Sunday’s game from the reduced 9,815 crowd, aimed more at the players again.

Pep is fortunate to have the committed backing of Tenerife’s President, and it may well continue if they stay nestled in 12th position. But there are still plenty of problems to be sorted out.

MARINO’S preparation was pretty hectic for a tough game against Mensajero, on the island of La Palma, following the departure of coach Toni Dumpierrez.

Former Santa Ursula coach Zeben Hernandez replaced him, and, despite his limited time with the squad, he will have been greatly encouraged by a fighting draw.

It was all a long way from

the new chief ’s previous role as coach at Azam, in the Tanzania Super League, and a fifth-minute home strike by Dani Lopez was a sharp welcome for Marino.

But they played themselves in well, stunning the home fans with a double salvo just short of half-time.

Midfielder Zeben Buades took advantage of a defensive slip by the home side to level, and Nami provided a lead a couple of minutes later.

this week, beating Clouseaus Bar by a staggering 10-2. And, despite not winning since 12th December, they played like champions!

Unfortunately for Clouseaus, Britannia were

running away with the division at the start of the season. And even though they have slipped in recent weeks, they showed their persistance to level the scores through Chema after 59 minutes.

But it was still a valuable point to bring home, and Marino will be looking to build on that on Sunday, when they host Los Llanos de Aridane, also from La Palma.

Kick-off is at noon, at the Estadio Antonio Dominguez, in Las Americas.

LIFE is pretty good for Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife, who need fear no team in Spain’s Premier League, as they again proved. They travelled to Levante and came back with an excellent win, after playing a patient game against their hosts.

It was even for most of the game, but Granadilla can always look to Maria Jose Perez to produce something from nowhere.

And, after 71 minutes, she again obliged, plundering the home defence to score the decisive goal with her 10th of the season.

This Sunday sees Granadilla return to home action, with an 11am kick-off against Zaragoza CFF at their San Isidro ground. Their next target is to catch Athletic Bilbao, who are just six points ahead of them.

Lynn gives Macs that scruffy look THE handicap system appears to be alive and kicking, as we found in the Plate last Friday, because all matches were won by the same scoreline - the odd point in seven!

The main surprise came at Scruffy Macs, who were confident, despite giving Loch-In B a massive 368 start. And by the end of the singles, things were going according to plan.

But back came the visitors to win the doubles, with a great 96 finish for Lynn, which earned their place in the semi-finals.

Nauta Nomads welcomed Gaffers, and, again, all went down to final doubles, when the experience and nerves of the First Division lads helped them into the last four.

They were joined by Waterfall, who travelled to Picasso’s and threw their best darts of the season, to emerge with a 4-3 win their finest result!

the doubles, which was thrown perfectly by the Naughty set.

Loch-In A could not emulate the B team’s achievement, even though Wayne hit a 180. Gio, enjoying a great season for Pas O Nadas B, plus good darts from the rest of the players, ensured a fine 4-3 victory.

Phoenix Bar had a real scrap on their hands, when they welcomed neighbours and rivals Pas O Nadas A. And what a game it turned out to be, swinging one way, then the other.

Yet there had to be a winner, and, on this occasion, the honours went to Phoenix, with a 4-3 finish.

Boothen gave a 300-plus lead to Ourplace Breakaways, but they made short work of the handicap, storming to a 5-2 triumph and a last-four place.

Congratulations to all the teams participating, and good luck to the successful ones.

Elsewhere, in a catch-up game, Nutty Nautas took on local rivals Ourplace Playgirls, and came away 6-2 winners.

Basketball

Injuries, by the right!

FIRSTLY, captain Nico Richotti has been ruled out for 10 months with ligament damage to his right leg. And his replacement didn’t fare much better.

Nigerian American Josh Akognon contributed 12 points on his debut in last week’s European home win over Salonika of Greece.

But the newcomer went off injured near the end, with a right-leg fracture, which means two months’ rest. That’s more than their share of bad luck.

The next new face in an Iberostar Tenerife shirt, Mads Bonde, was eased in gently during last Sunday’s home league game at UCAM Murcia.

But the Dane, a 20-year-old prospect from Naestved, couldn’t prevent a midgame slump, which cost Tenerife the match.

They took the first quarter 25-21, but lost the next two 20-14 each, and even a rally

to take the final quarter 1913 wasn’t quite enough.

Mateusz Ponitka kept up his amazing scoring run with 16 points, followed closely by Rosco Allen, with 14.

Tenerife were, at least,

already pre-qualified for the next round of the European Champions League, when they entertained French team Elan Chalon on Wednesday night, in their final Group B qualifying game.

It was a comfortable 82-62 win, with the quarter scores

going 24-15, 13-20, 16-9,¡ and 29-18. Mike Tobey was the big scorer with 13 points, on a night of solid team-work.

Coach Fotios Katsikaris was impressed with the way his team went about their business. “We controlled the game in the first quarter with our defence, but in the second we lost our balance, playing without small guys because of our injuries.

“After that, we got rebounds, played fast, and took advantage of their mistakes with good basketball.”

Tenerife, now trying to get ahead of their injury crisis and back to a full squad, have signed Swedish player Tobias Borg, who will join them at the weekend.

The 24-year-old, who has experience of Spain’s top league with Bilbao, started this season back home with Sodertaje.

Multi-club owner in corruption scandal W E D N E S D AY morning brought a rude awakening for Cadiz FC, because police raided the club and arrested the CEO, Enrique Pina, usually known as Quique Pina.

ARONA Tenerife Sur are in the groove… not just winning, but winning in some style!

And their latest victims were Alcobendas of Madrid.

They were wiped out 3-0 on Saturday at Los Cristianos sports hall, by relentless Arona, who won their best-of-five-sets

clash 25-11, 25-17, 25-17.

It is hard to believe that Arona were promoted to the Superliga only last summer.

But they have settled in well and are now sitting in fifth place, Elzbieta Nykiel again their top scorer with 16 points.

Travelling is a big ingredient of the top division, and Arona have another mainland trip tomorrow (Saturday) to play CVB Barcelona.

Surfing

The raid was carried out jointly, by the Unit of Economic Crime and the Prosecutor of the National Police. It was instigated at the request of the Anti Corruption Prosecutor, in connection with moneylaundering and tax crimes.

The “Football Leaks” movement started the case rolling when it discovered documents, showing that the economic rights of a Granada player (Pina was President of that club in 2011) had been transferred to Portugal’s Oporto.

The current investigation involves looking at the laundering of money through tax havens, as well as defrauding the public treasury.

Quique, born in Murcia, had also owned the Ciudad Murcia team, who he lifted to Second Division level in 2011.

Investigations showed that Quique was part of a Luxembourg company, along with the Italian Pozzo fam-

ily. Gino Pozzo owns the Premier League’s Watford, Granada in Spain, and Italian club Udinese. But his joint involvement in several clubs has long been a sore point among football fans.

They tend to move players around between the clubs, and Watford received lots of bad publicity when they were promoted to the Premier League, using a team comprising mainly of loan players from related clubs.

One of the alleged methods of generating money for the accused was through transfer fees and agent fees. But, conveniently, Quique is also

a registered football agent.

He also has other interests outside football, with three businesses registered in Spain, two in Murcia and one in Alicante, which are linked to the brick-making sector.

At the moment, the focus is just on Spain. But, inevitably, authorities in the other countries, in which Quique has interests, will be keen to see if there are more discrepancies in the books.

Meanwhile, on a football front, Cadiz FC could find themselves heavily sanctioned with fines, or even an enforced relegation.

CRAZY weather caused a few delays, but the Tenerife Pro Surf contest got under way on Tuesday, near the Metropolis building, halfway between Los Cristianos and Las Americas.

The French set a cracking pace in this qualifying series for the World Surf League, Pauline Ado and Marc Lacomare domi-

nating the first round.

The men’s quarterfinals started yesterday (Thursday), with Costa Rican Jason Torres and Spain’s Gony Zubizaretta pushing each other all the way.

In the women’s competition, Carol Henrique (Portugal) and Australian Mikaela Greene kept the competition rolling.

The even is scheduled to finish on Sunday, so you still have time to enjoy the free spectacle of some of the best surfers in the world.

WINTER Olympic fever is spreading far and wide, even to the sleepy backwaters of Milton Keynes.

On Sunday in the British Ice Hockey League, Milton Keynes Lightning were playing Guildford Flames, when American Matt Nickerson, the home side’s badtempered defenceman, thumped a fan, as he left the rink. There’s always plenty of cut-and-thrust on the ice, but this was a step too far, and Milton Keynes sacked him on the spot.

The League also issued a 20-game ban, which will follow him to wherever his next port of call is.

The official league report said. “Nickerson left the players’ bench for the purpose of engaging in a

physical altercation with an opposing player.

“He physically broke free of the linesman to try to engage an opposition player on several occasions. While leaving the playing surface, Nickerson took his stick and moved it from his right hand to his left hand.

“It was an indication that there was premeditated thought on Nickerson’s part, because he delivered

a forceful back-hand punch, directly to the head of an unsuspecting fan.”

Milton Keynes were shocked at the incident, and ended the player’s contract straight away.

They also apologised to the victim, and other spectators in the building.

A spokesman said: “It is unacceptable at any time that supporters are threatened, or made to feel unsafe.”
