Council is targeting boozy kids
9th March - 15th March 2018
LOS Cristianos can expect up to 17,000 spectators, as the last days of the town’s annual Carnival close in. But Arona Council is concerned that the Family Carnival Day tomorrow (Saturday) will, again, feature drugs and alcohol, consumed by hundreds of youngsters. Continued on Page 3

Council puts foot down
Continued from Front That has been the way of the Carnival’s “Family Day” for several years, and the Council, along with parents, are saying: “Enough is enough.” With this in mind, Arona Council has been running a preventionand-awareness campaign in the form of a workshop, which has been visiting Arona’s secondary schools. Its representatives have been spelling out the dangers of consuming drugs and alcohol, and reinforcing the Council’s concern, using facts and figures. Several surveys have
been carried out on substance -and-alco hol abuse in secondary schools across Spain. And the data from these surveys shows, in the Canary Islands, that 14 years is the average age when most teenagers start to experiment. Alcohol in minors is the highest substance abuse, with figures relating to numbers in the Canaries reaching as high as 74.1%, which, though no consolation, is slightly lower than the 78.9% national average. Arona’s Education Councillor, Leopoldo Diaz Oda, said: “Al-
cohol and substance abuse with minors is a very serious issue. Many of them become addicted, and everyone should take responsibility.” He added: “The objectives of the campaign are to prevent alcohol consumption with teenage children, as well as raising awareness, and wanting to help these youngsters increase the ability to make their own, responsible decisions.” Tomorrow (Saturday), there will be information stands spread out around Los Cristianos, and several volunteers will be handing out fly-
Going ‘green’ again, for St Patrick’s Day AS St Patrick’s Day approaches, on 17th March, Adeje is preparing to join in the celebrations, as it has done in recent years. With this in mind, the Irish consul and Adeje Council are organising a number of events to mark this special day, for the wider, Irish community. Tomorrow (Saturday), there will be gala dinner in Golf Costa Adeje, and a percentage of the ticket money will go to the Adeje-based Asociación San Juan. A visiting group of traditional Irish musicians will also be performing in the San Juan centre during the week. Those interested in attending the dinner should contact the Irish consulate (C/ Villalba Hervás 9, Office 2 38002 Santa Cruz de Tenerife, or
phone 922-245-671). Adeje’s award-winning Plaza de España will again be part of the global “greening”, a movement, which sees public buildings and spaces around the world turn green, in celebration of this most international of national celebrations. The plaza will be lit up from 7.30pm next Friday (16th March) until the Sunday. The official Mass is on 17th March, St Patrick’s Day, at 12 noon, in the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Church (calle Siete Islas, Las Américas, Arona), and will be in English. Zebenzui Chinea Linares, Adeje’s Social Harmony Councillor, said: “Adeje is a multicultural borough, with people from over 120 countries living side by side. “We celebrate a host
of different cultural events, such as Holi, the Hindu celebration of colours, the Chinese New Year, traditional Tibetan, Muslim, Orthodox and, of course, Canarian events.” He added: “We really do believe that respect, cultural interchange and social harmony are the keys to eradicating potential tension, and emphasising the things that unite us.” San Blas Catholic Church, which has a large contingency of parishioners from Ireland at this time of the year, will also be staging a Holy Mass on St Patrick’s Day, at 10am. Later that day, Golf del Sur’s Golf Club is staging an authentic St Patrick’s Day in the club house from 8pm, with Irish musicians and even Irish stew, and all are welcome.
ers, posters and badges, aimed, especially, towards the younger crowds. They will be offering important facts about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and they will, also, explain the truth about local myths. Many young teenagers believe that, with a strong coffee, or by making themselves vomit, the effects of alcohol disappear. The information stands are also aiming at promoters and stall vendors, who sell alcohol to minors. They will be told about the serious problems they could
face. There will also be workshops set up, with volunteers from secondary schools, all focusing on giving information on possible, risky behaviour at the Carnival. They will also be spelling out to young people the responsibilities involved with having sexual relations, along with the possible consequences. And, in addition to speaking to people about the risks, the students will be told they should be promoting healthy behaviour at all the town’s fiestas.
The problem is, said one concerned mother: “The kids won’t pay a scrap of attention to what is being said. Many will be there for the fun, plus the drugs and booze. “Sadly, there’s nothing that parents can do about it, unless we accompany them, every step of the way. If you are a parent, you will know that it just won’t happen. “We dread these events, but it’s hard to tell a 15-year-old boy that he can’t go out with his mates. He’d be a laughing stock.”

Super bridge will ring the changes
LIKE an elaborate Meccano construction, a green, sprawling snake is clicking into place across the main Avenida Chayofita road, which links, Los Cristianos with Playa de Las Americas.
Few people could be bothered to use the rusty, metal bridge, which was an eyesore near the main roundabout. But that now lies in a crumpled heap on nearby waste land. At the same time, the concrete bridge, over the dual carriageway to the outdoor-pool complex, is into its last weeks of service.
Two into one will go, and already the stylish, green arrival, with its Olympicstyle white hoops, is gathering approving glances, and quite a fan club. Footings and wider ramps are emerging, to link up to the new bridge, and the connecting spots look remarkably easy to pop into place. But they require heavy-
lifting equipment, and plenty of room. Most of the delicate work has taken place at night, and the final stages will soon complete the puzzle. The walkways will be considerably longer for pedestrians, because of their shallow angle, but they will be ideal for push-chairs and wheelchairs. And extra
lighting will ensure safety, which is a key consideration for Arona Council. The fountain, on the main Los Cristianos roundabout, has already offered a more modern, and pleasing, welcome to visitors. And, soon, the new bridge will give a much better impression on the western approach.
The end in sight for Puigdemont CARLES Puigdemont, Catalonia’s rebellious, former separatist leader, has withdrawn his candidacy as President of the region. From his self-imposed exile in Belgium, he posted a video to his Twitter account, saying he had asked Cataluña Parliament’s President “to start, as quickly as possible, the round of contacts with the different parliamentary groups, to proceed with the election of a new candidate, to be invested as President”. Puigdemont said his decision “does not fully
guarantee the restoration of our autonomy… but it will give us the freedom to undertake the next phase of the road towards independence”. He said his party would propose a pro-secession campaigner, Jordi Sanchez, as an alternative candidate. But Sanchez is still on remand in a Madrid prison on charges of sedition. Puigdemont also said he would lead an “international offensive” to make the Catalan case, and he went on to attack what he labelled Madrid’s “coup d’état to subdue the will of the Catalan people”. The former Catalonia leader also announced the crea-
tion, in Belgium, of what he called the “Council of the Republic,” an unofficial group, expected to promote the Catalan independence project, as well as safeguarding a position for himself. Puigdemont, who risks being arrested the moment he re-enters Spain from exile, was the first choice of the pro-independence majority in the Catalan parliament after December’s election. But the country’s Constitutional Court ruled that he couldn’t be elected while out of the country. He faces charges of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds in Spain.

Equality Council equal to the task A GALA dinner event in Costa Adeje’s Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA) this evening (Friday), includes the 15th Abinque Adeje Women’s prize being awarded. The honour has gone to Adeje Equality Council, a group of women representating various sectors and cultures in the town, who are working for a fairer, more-equal society. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said: “The Equality Council, in the three years since its creation, has welcomed people who are working to empower women; to prevent inequalities and to eliminate obstacles that impede the evo-
lution of real equality between women and men.” The Abinque has now been awarded for 15 years, and it coincides with events which celebrated International Women’s Day yesterday (Thursday). It is recognition of the work and contribution of a woman, or group of women, to the life and local de-
velopment of Adeje borough. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga signed a decree, requesting the work of the female Adeje councillors be covered officially, between 11am1pm yesterday. The Council normally replaces an official on holiday, or on a break, in this way. So this announcement is, in effect, a demonstration
STRIKING WOMEN ARE MAKING THEIR POINT
FEMALE strikers turned out in force in Arona and Adeje yesterday (Thursday) in support of Women’s International Day. The protests were organised by the 8M Commission to draw attention to the pay inequality, which is 13% less for women in the public sector, and 19% less in the public sector, according to figures from EUROSTAT, the official EU statistic agency. There were big gatherings in around 200 locations across Spain, and 300 trains were cancelled because of absent female staff.
Meanwhile, in Tenerife, some 200 people gathered outside Los Cristianos Cultural Centre, and not just women! Many men, well aware of the injustices suffered by women, added
their whole-hearted support, as did the Adeje men. They joined forces with the women to register their own displeasure at the lack of equal opportunities for the opposite sex.
of his public support for the borough’s female councillors, who will leave their offices during those hours. On mainland Spain, Spanish women were also urged to make a stand and strike, to mark International Women’s Day. In a bid to show that “if we stop, the world stops”, women were encouraged to aban-
don work and other duties, such as household chores. The walk-out was supported by the feminist groups behind the 8M Commission, as well as the Mayors of Madrid and Barcelona, Manuela Carmena and Ada Colau, who agreed to join the strike action. It is designed to highlight lower pay conditions (women, on average, earn 14% less than men, and they do more unpaid work than they do). Previous Abinque winners include bodyboard world champion Alexandra Rinder and Walk for Life founder Brigitte Gypen, as well as many more. Tickets for tonight’s Gala Dinner, open to women and men, are still on sale at Adeje’s Department of Equality, Since its 2015 inception, the Equality Council has been ac-
tive on many fronts locally, regionally and nationally. It has also helped organise many events, as well as demonstrations against gender violence, using the new Plaza Pedro Zerolo memorial to stage public assemblies. In addition, the group has been working with education projects in the borough’s school centres, helping students with issues such as gender violence, bullying, lgbt-phobias, etc. Programme Tomorrow (Saturday), 11am: Meeting with representatives from Garachico, Buenavista, Los Silos for guided tour of Adeje town Thursday, 15th March: Workshop, “Tardes para ti”, Adeje Cultural Centre Friday, 16th, 8pm: Cinema, “Figuras Ocultas”. NEWS IN BRIEF Suspect killer skips bail
9th March - 15th March 2018
Experimental opening for those
unemployed SPANISH police have issued an arrest warrant for Simon Corner, following an infringement in his bail terms. The 36-year-old, freed from Algeciras prison on bail last April, failed to present himself at a Costa del Sol police station last month. Corner is suspected of killing his former girlfriend and expat, Lisa Brown, who disappeared near her home in Guadiaro, San Roqueon, on 4th November 2015. Lisa, 32 at the time and working in Gibraltar, failed to pick up her son Marco, then eight, from school. Investigators believe a “violent episode” took place prior to her disappearance. But a body has never been found, and Corner maintains he is innocent.
Great divide halts drivers
DRIVERS were stuck either side of a road near the Costa del Sol area, after a landslide caused a gaping hole to appear in the tarmac. Stunned motorists looked at each across the divide in shock as they stood by the gap last Friday. But one man, who was filming the footage, showed he still retained his sense of humour by shouting, “This one’s hollow”, across the void to another man. The raging torrent of water in the distance, which he was filming, showed why the motorists had been prevented from driving any further. Fortunately, no one was injured when part of the MA-4108, between Salares and Archez, collapsed. But public transport in the area was also affected. It could be at least a month before the problem is fixed, and the road reopened to traffic.
Number’s up for thieves
TWO teenagers have been arrested by cops in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas for stealing a taxi-driver’s mobile phone, as he was dropping them off. The boys, both aged 18, snatched the mobile from its phone holder on the dash-board and fled. The driver called the police immediately, and he then found the thieves in a nearby street. With the help of locals, he was able to collect his phone, while the cops, who were given descriptions of the pair, identified and arrested the pair for theft, with damage.
ADEJE Council’s Economic Development department has joined forces with the Canarian Employment Service, along with the Employment and Social Services Ministry. Together, they plan to develop an experimental programme, ServiRes, to benefit 60 unemployed people in the borough. These individuals will have been jobless for over a year, and the objective is to
assist their re-entry into the labour market. Adeje Employment Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martin, said: “Over recent years, we have run different initiatives, designed to help people return to work, and with a lot of success. “We are meeting two main objectives: training in the work sector, and returning people to work who, until now, for various reasons, have been unable to find work.” Those taking part will, after their training, receive a certificate of qualification
in basic bar and restaurant management. They will also take part in placements in businesses, as well as in specialist training workshops and more, to improve their curriculum and increase their employability. Those chosen for the course must attend all the classes, plus the scheduled, practical sessions and workshops, as well as interviews and orientation sessions. More information can be obtained from the Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA).
Walk, learn, enjoy… R E G I S T R AT I O N for a series of walks, organised by Adeje Council, under a social-harmony umbrella, is now open to the public. The walks help participants understand the worth of our local mountains and forests, and the need to care for them, as well as the enjoyment gained for walking in groups, and getting to know new people. Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares, responsible for the Department of Citizen Participation, said: “We are working to create a fun-leisure activity, and
the routes we have chosen have some importance from an environmental point of view. “They also encourage social harmony between individuals and different groups.” He added: “Our first walk, last Saturday, which took people into the Agua García wood, was fully subscribed. But there are still places on the Ifonche-Taucho walk on 24th March. “And future walks will take you to different corners of Tenerife: La Gomera, and, possibly, the Spanish peninsula.” They will also include trips to Los Órganos de La Orotava; Costa del Sol-Caminito del
Rey; Rambleta-Pico ViejoRoques de García; Forestal Park; Kayak and walk, Teno; Chamorga-Roque Bermejo, and Los Silos. The scheduled walks will be subject to cancellation if the weather is particularly bad, but alternative routes or days will be found. All the walks will have a cover charge, to pay for group security and medical attention, if required. If you want to participate, fill in a registration form, available from the Escuela de Seguridad y Convivencia (the school of safety and social harmony), in Las Nieves; by email at escuela@ adeje.es, or by phone, 922 775 109, from 1-7pm.

You know it makes sense! S P A N I S H Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy coined another of his occasional, much-anticipated tongue twisters on Monday morning. He was attempting to talk about regional financing during a speech, in the Badajoz region of Extremadura. “I can assure you all, I will do what I can and a bit more than what I can, if that is possible; and I will do everything possible and
even impossible, if the impossible is also possible.” he told the audience. The substance of the PM’s speech was a 20m euro investment in regional train infrastructure improve-
ments. During the 2015 General Election campaign, Spaniards wondered what the Prime Minister meant when talking about who gets to vote for the mayor of a town. “It is the neighbour who elects the mayor, and the mayor is the person who wants the neighbours to be the mayor,” he said. In May 2015, Rajoy ended a campaign speech for the local and regional elections with: “Spain is a great nation and Spaniards are very Spanish and a lot Spanish. Thank you very much.”
Diver stunned by mystery ‘dragon’
ANTONIO J de la Rosa, an avid scuba diver around the Tenerife coast, as well as an underwater photographer, has discovered an unrecognisable creature, in Canarian waters at least.
It looked like seaweed, or a piece of cloth, but it was shaped like a small dragon and was swimming around in Tenerife waters in the early hours of Tuesday. And it was filmed by Antonio. The species, more than a metre in length, coloured yellow and unknown to the diver, moved slowly, and has been named the Radazul Dragon.
Fake disability cards spell out heavy fines LOCAL Police in Santa Cruz have detected around 40 false disability-parking cards since the beginning of the year, including 15 just last week. The cops, while patrolling the streets around Tenerife’s capital, specifically the smaller
ones around the city centre, have discovered that the majority of the fake disabled cards they came across were extremely good photocopies. Some 349 drivers have already been penalised for parking in designated disabled park-
ing areas, and some of the fines issued were related to these falsified cards. But police are adamant that drivers who carry these fakes, for easy parking, could be looking at fines of up to 200 euros, if they’re caught.

Take part in Adeje’s Good Friday theatre
Italian hurt in 15m fall
AN Italian man, aged 22, received several injuries after falling 15 metres from a cliff at Las Teresitas Beach, in Santa Cruz last Sunday. A call was made to the Canarian Emergency Services at around 6.50pm, asking for assistance, and an ambulance team were dispatched to the area immediately, assisted by the Local Police. The man was transferred to Candelaria Hospital, where he is still under observation.

open this week for members of the public who would like to be involved in the crowd scenes. While some understanding of Spanish is necessary to follow the directions, these are crowd scenes, with no actual speaking roles involved. Costumes are provided, and children and adults are welcome. This is one of the most important cultural happenings in Adeje every year, so why not be a part of it? Full details about registration and participation are on the Council’s
main webpage, www.adeje. es on which you can also download the entry form, which should be filled in and dropped off at Adeje Cultural Centre (weekdays, 8am-10pm). Under12s must be accompanied by an adult. Cultural Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera said: “Every year, ‘La Pasión’ is something of a meeting point for the people of Adeje, as well as people from elsewhere. “They come together to be part of this significant act, representing the life and death of Jesus Christ.”
AN Italian expat, who put his rented apartment up for sale, and then accepted a 12,000-euro deposit from a buyer, on the Spanish property, has been arrested. The unnamed 40-year-old also tried to flog a second home, owned by his landlord, after stealing the keys and making off with sports equipment worth “thousands of euros”, according to reports. Police began a probe after the owner reported that the two Torremolinos apartments had appeared on the market, without his consent. The cops spoke with the estate agents involved, but staff said they had no knowledge of the scam. However, they admitted that one of the flats had already been sold, with a 12,000-euro deposit handed over to the suspect, after he had presented a forged letter of authorisation. The Italian has been charged with fraud, as well as falsifying official documents, and robbery.

Brits now abandoning Spain in their thousands, for financial reasons THE number of British people living in Spain, officially, has dropped from 397,892 to 240,785 in the past five years, because Brexit, among other things, has become a major worry to expats. Michelle Ball’s store in La Xara, Alicante, is not one of those everything-for-aeuro establishments, even though it looks as if it ought to be. True, she sells dresses for a euro, as well as plates, vases, lamps, plastics flowers and other decorative items. However, her products aren’t sourced from China, but from the kitchens, dining rooms and wardrobes of local Brits, who donate their goods to charity. Michelle, and the other volunteers who work there, use the profits to help British people in the region, who are sick and have few resources. This charity shop has been inundated with a trove of goods, as an increasing number of Brits sell their homes and move back to their home country. But before bowing out, they pass by Michelle’s shop and
Mass Brexodus! drop off everything they believe isn’t worth taking back with them. The number of Brits leaving Spain has now overtaken those arriving, and, says Michelle: “Many are returning because life has become incredibly expensive.” She is 44, has lived in Valencia for 30 years, and adds: “My mother has lost 160 euros a month in her pension since the Brexit referendum, because of the Pound’s devaluation. “Now, her pension is 690 euros, and, since the Spanish Government made changes a few years back, she also has to pay a portion of her medicines.” Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE), reveals that, in the last five years, the number of British residents in the country has dropped by 157,107, partly because of Brexit, and partly through the new regulation on municipal enrolment in Spanish regions. Official figures show that while the number of residents, from 15 EU
countries in Spain (before eastern European countries joined the EU), has fallen by 25%, the British expats’ total has fallen by 40%. The INE’s migration statistics also show that 102,367 British residents left Spain between 20122017. And, though people from the UK continue to move to Spain each year, 88,799 in the same period, the number of Brits leaving the country now outnumbers those who arrive. It’s a complete reversal of the previous trend, when, between 2008 and 2012, some 40,454 more Britons arrived in Spain than left. And experts indicate that the drop in British residents is down to two main factors. Firstly, changes to municipal enrolment rules revealed that there were tens of thousands of Brits who were registered in Spain but had gone back home, or had died without the town hall being informed. Town halls benefit from having more residents, because it means more funding, but there is no incentive to encourage people to drop off the padrón. But changes introduced in early 2010 mean that municipalities must now confirm, every two years, whether a person is still in the area, or every five years if the person is listed in the Central Registry of Foreigners. This has led to the second factor, which, experts argue, is responsible for the disparity in official numbers: municipal enrolment now leaves out EU members who continue living in Spain, but who have not applied for residency. Brits in Spain believe the
impact of Brexit will also force many more to leave. “I don’t know if I will return,” says Patricia Mary Sawers, a 69-year-old, former admin worker at Cambridge University. “It will depend on how our health coverage ends up.” The falling number of Spain’s UK residents is also linked to the loss of purchasing power. As a closed community, with members who tend to frequent their own bars, restaurants, stores and clubs, the Brits were
buffered, to a degree, from the effects of the financial crisis. But this attitude has worsened the impact of the fall in the Pound, argues Carmen Ródenas, a University of Alicante lecturer, because pensioners have less to spend at these establishments. Many Brits, who arrived to the Mediterranean Coast at the beginning of 2000, when they were over 65, are now widowed, and there is a greater push for them to return home.
Three injured in motorbike crash
A MAN and woman were injured after a motorcyclist lost control and crashed head-on with a van on the F-82 in Santiago del Teide, at around 5pm on Monday. A few people, who witnessed the incident, alerted the Canarian Emergency Services about several people being in need of medical assistance. An ambulance team assessed the situation and discovered that the man had suffered moderate leg injuries, while the woman had injured both upper and lower limbs. Both were transferred to Costa Adeje’s Quiron Hospital for further treatment, while another man, having received on-the-spot treatment from the medical team, insisted he was okay and was discharged voluntarily by the ambulance team.

Arona Carnival
Pirates’ final thrust
THEY saved the best ‘til last. Arona Carnival won’t bow out quietly, and, this weekend, the costumes will be more outrageous, the music louder, and the cast bigger than ever. There was a slightly-morenormal feel to the opening
Cabalgata parade last Saturday night, from Playa de Las Americas, but plenty of evidence of this year’s pirate theme. Tomorrow (Saturday) is the “day” carnival from noon at Los Cristianos showground, with top Spanish chart acts belting out dance music. From 5pm, there will be a fancy-dress contest by the fisherwoman’s statue at the old beach. The day ends with a musical
choice. From 10pm, a grand dance, featuring a live showband, will descend on the main showground stage, and a DJ set will take over the smaller stage, outside the Cultural Centre, from 11pm. Sunday starts with a display of classic cars from 11am, and a pet show from noon, both at the showground. Everyone’s favourite is the Coso parade, starting at 4pm from Paloma Beach
apartments, at the lower end of Los Cristianos, to the Cultural Centre, in a twohour extravaganza. The newly-elected carnival queens and candidates of each age group will travel in style on tall floats, enabling all to see the elaborate costumes, which replaced the official pirate-themed outfits of the opening parade. And the main stage will prolong the party into the
early hours, with live music. Monday brings the final act, as the giant sardine is paraded through the streets to meet its burning demise at Los Cristianos beach. It sets off from the Cultural Centre at 9pm, and will be followed along by wailing widows, throwing themselves to the ground in mourning. But, of course, they’ll all be on their feet for one, final, night-into-day of dancing in the showground.

Wonderful waterfall was in the Canaries
FOOTAGE of a spectacular waterfall, cascading “on to a road in southern Spain”, emerged online as storms continued to lash the country earlier this week. But the video is not what it seems! Several news outlets claimed the video was shot in the Grazalema town of Cadiz, which had experienced an estimated 600 litres per square metre of rainfall since last Friday, making it Spain’s wettest region, says weather agency Aemet. In fact, the actual video was filmed in Gran Canaria, on an unknown date. And Clive Muir, from Turismo
Grazalema, said: “Yep, that is the Canaries. I wish people would take more care before they post stuff.” Reservoirs in the province have risen by at least 10% since the storms hit Andalucia, and many parts of the country remained on yellow and orange alert for rain and strong winds. An emergency-services control centre in the south took more than 400 weather-related calls on Monday alone. The worst-affected provinces were Granada, Huelva and Andalucia’s capital city, Seville, which had more than 250 incidents recorded. Meanwhile, it was sunbathing weather in parts of Tenerife, following last week’s horrendous storms in most of the Canary Islands.
HIV-diagnosis tests now in pharmacies PHARMACIES across the Canary Islands are now selling self-diagnosing HIV tests, which can be bought across the counter for around 30 euros. The sale of these tests was authorised last year by the Spanish Ministry of Health, and there is no need for a prescription. The MoH protocol has been put in place to provide relative information about the virus, and about the self-diagnosis system. And the test can be carried out via a small pin-prick, or with a small saliva sample. Guillermo Schwarts, President of the College of Pharmacy, in Santa Cruz, says it will take some 5-6 months to see reliable data from the sales. He believes that people proving HIV positive with the self-diagnosis kit should alert the Health Service to continue with relevant tests, to confirm the outcome. Many people doubt whether
they are virus carriers, because they show no symptoms, yet the kit will let them know. If positive, they can start with the necessary treatment, as well as taking responsibility. There has been some controversy about the sale of these particular kits, but Shwarts believes it will give confirmation to those who
are carriers. He also stresses that, internationally, there are some 150,000 people who are unaware that they have contracted the virus. The sale of these kits in pharmacies is part of a Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of HIV, and other sexuallytransmitted diseases.

Startled starfish stranded THE storm that swept across Spain’s southern tip last weekend damaged boats, cars and buildings along the coast… and devastated the starfish population.
A carpet of the marine animals washed up on Huelva’s Punta Umbria beach on Monday in what conservationists believe was a direct result of Storm Emma. A video, uploaded on Facebook by Juana Salas, which showed the stranded starfish, has been viewed over half-a-million times. “The sea bottom was churned up at the same time as the spring tides, and add to that a tornado,” said José Antonino Cuesta, a marine biologist.

TO: Editor Dear Editor, During my holiday in Torviscas last month, I frequented La Pinta beach and was disturbed by the number of sometimes aggressive, African/Senegalese-type people, selling fake goods. Upon the arrival of a patrolling police officer, they are warned by mobile phone. They then take the polythene bag out of the nearest litter bin, put their goods inside the bin, then replace the black bin-liner and disappear. When all is clear, they retrieve the goods and continue pestering passers-by. I have noticed this happening over the last three years, and it’s getting worse. I imagine they are illegal immigrants, because, in the evening, they are all picked up by car and driven away. I’m sure some plain-clothes police could soon eradicate this scourge on an otherwise pleasant area. Terry Alford, England
Children’s time to shine YOUR Time to Shine is a scheme, funded by the Helping Hands children’s charity, for the benefit of Estrellas Theatre School.
And Coleen Suckling, a lecturer in Marine Biology at Bangor University, added: “Starfish may be at particular risk of strandings after storms because of a behaviour known as ‘starballing’.” “By curling each of their multiple arms to create
a large spherical balloon shape with their body, they can, essentially, roll over the seabed in fastmoving water, and cover much greater distances. “But during a storm, they could be rolled out of control and left stranded on the beach.”
The charity believes that the performing arts will help all youngsters to accomplish their dreams, and is keen to help them along the way. This is why Helping Hands is investing 1,500 euros to support five children, aged between 3-16, who will attend Estrellas classes once a week, in one of its five centres
across the island. The charity’s leader, Liz Montague, said: “Most parents want to give their children the best opportunities, but do not always have the financial means to do so. “For this reason, through charity support, we can help give these five youngsters an opportunity to be part of this scheme, and to join Estrellas Theatre School of Performing Arts.” Please contact Maureen Sands, on 647 844 794, for more information, or if you know of a child who would qualify for funding.

THE grieving family of Kirsty Maxwell have felt “lost, confused and abandoned” since her death last April, when she plunged from the 10th floor of an apartment complex in Benidorm, on the Costa Blanca. They have criticised Spanish police for the way they have since handled the investigation, and they have asked the Spanish authorities, repeatedly, what happened to the 27-year-old’s pink T-shirt and denim skirt she was wearing on the night of her death. He husband, Adam, revealed recently that the clothes had been “thrown out” without proper DNA testing by the police in Spain, which could have provided clues. The Scottish National Party’s Hannah Bardell has now taken up the case, calling for better support from the Foreign Office, following the deaths of British nationals abroad in suspicious circumstances. She told MPs in the House of Commons how constituent Kirsty entered an apartment room, occupied by a group of English men, who were “high on drugs and alcohol”, before she met her death. Ms Bardell said Kirsty’s parents, Brian and Denise, and husband Adam, had provided a few words about

what they had encountered. The Commons heard them say in a statement: “Mentally, emotionally and physically, this has been extremely tough, and still with no real end in sight. “When Kirsty was brutally taken from us, they took a part of us all something we will never regain. Kirsty was visiting an EU country as a British citizen. “She lived by the rules set out in today’s society; she worked every day, paid her taxes and never called on the system for any assistance. “We now plead for that assistance; plead for justice to be sought; plead for her country not to desert her and her family, in their hour of need. “For the past 10 months as a family, we’ve felt lost, confused and abandoned … all this, and trying to grieve while fighting a case through the Spanish courts with no assistance financially, legally or morally, from the UK or Spain.” Foreign Office Minister Harriett Baldwin offered her sympathies to those who had lost loved ones abroad, and said that a network, compromising 772 consular staff, were always on hand to offer support. But she was adamant that the UK could not “interfere in local process” when there had been a death. She added: “We do emphasise that we can’t interfere in local process, and we would not want to see that kind of interference in our own.”
Phew! Complaint’s not to be sniffed at EXPATS have finally snapped after nine years of putting up with raw sewage leaking into a stream, just metres from their homes. Colin Evans, 67, has been battling with Almeria’s Albox Council, in Andalucia, for officials to fix the problem throughout that period. Despite reporting broken pipework at the El Canico sewage plant, some 2km from his home, he complains
that the Town Hall has failed to act. “The smell is disgusting,” he said. “It is also a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and it flows past our house and onwards, down the stream. “We have complained and put in a denuncia to the police about Albox Town Hall, yet nothing has been done.” Mr Evans, from Middlesbrough, added that, every year, there seemed to be an overflow and a break in the pipes, causing foul-smelling sewage to overflow into the stream.

Shell-shocked! Ryanair Brexit threat
to ground UK flights RYANAIR boss Michael O’Leary has threatened to ground all flights, temporarily, in a bid to stop Brexit.
THE owner of a tortoise hatchery has been arrested in Spain for the illegal trafficking of a protected species. Guardia Civil officers found a hatchery with 89 tortoises in the San Pedro del Pinatar area of Murcia, in southern Spain. The 48-year-old owner was arrested, and more than 89 specimens of protected species, whose possession, reproduction in captivity and commercialisation, without au-
thorisation, is prohibited. The investigation began last January when police became aware of a Radiata tortoise, a protected species, being offered for sale. Among the animals seized was an Aldabra giant tortoise, weighing close to 60kg, with a diameter of 60cm. Male specimens can weigh up to 250kg, with a span of more than one metre. Officers found equipment for the incubation of the eggs, and terrariums. Meanwhile, the 89 live tortoises were taken into custody.
The controversial Irishman, who owns the airline, emphasised that people would “no longer have cheap holidays”, if the UK’s departure from the EU goes ahead. The staunch remainer, addressing an audience, alongside other airline leaders at a Brussels conference, said the public had been “lied to” and added: “It’s in our interests, not for a long period of time, that the aircraft are grounded. “It’s only when you get to that stage, where you’re going to persuade the average British voters that they were lied to in the entire Brexit debate. “When you begin to realise that you’re no longer going to have cheap holidays in Portugal or Spain or Italy, and that you’ve got to drive to Scotland or get a ferry to Ireland as your only holiday options, maybe
we’ll begin to rethink the whole Brexit debate.” Adding fuel to the fire, Lufthansa boss Carsten Spohr said: “In theory, if we could use this industry to prove to the British how wrong the decision was, it might be a good thing.” In an effort to quell fears,
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: “It’s in the interests of everyone to keep the market open.” This follows reports that any new US-UK flight deal could be worse than the current one, which could, ultimately, lead to fewer flights between the two countries.

Escaped pot-bellied pig is such a laugh for cops A VIETNAMESE, pot-bellied pig sparked a Benny Hill-style chase, involving more than half-a-dozen police officers in an Alicante graveyard in Spain. They spent two hours trying to catch the saucy animal, after a woman spotted it foraging among the tombstones in the municipal cemetery. “The problem is that it was digging close to some freshly-laid graves,” said a member of the maintenance team, in the wake of the bizarre incident. It was after 2pm by the time exhausted police managed to snare the invader, having arrived at midday. “We had to run our trotters off,” said one laughing cop. Earlier, the officers were seen poking
fun at an inventive colleague, who made a lasso from rope before failing to catch the quarry. Witnesses described the scene as “like something from a comedy film”, as some officers drove cars through the graveyard, while others chased on foot. Yet a few people, who see them as a pest, criticised the presence of pigs in the neighbourhood, where they are breeding.
“The pig just trotted straight through the front gate,” said a furious resident, before admitting that the porkers are normally seen on nearby streets, where they often scoff from bins which “often remain uncollected for weeks”. A Local Police official added: “They could cause a serious traffic accident one day.” The Vietnamese potbellied pig, weighing up to 65kg, has become a fashionable pet, and
even Hollywood star George Clooney owns one. In Alicante, a stray population of pigs established itself after a number of them escaped or were aban-
doned. They were first seen in the Vistahermosa district, but they are now found in several places around the outskirts of the city. The local council, reportedly, has received
“constant complaints” from outraged citizens. It has made several attempts to get rid of them, and 12 adults (pigs, that is), were removed in December!
‘Kidnapped’ hospital boy is free of cancer THE parents who sparked a manhunt, by taking their son, Ashya, from Southampton General Hospital to Spain without doctors’ permission three years ago, say he is now “clear of cancer”. Brett and Naghemeh, following a disagreement with doctors regarding his treatment, abducted their young son from the NHS hospital so that he could receive pioneering treatment in Europe. After a huge manhunt by police, they were traced to a hostel in the Axarquia, east of Malaga, on the Costa del Sol, in southern Spain, where they were arrested and detained for 72 hours. Ashya had a “medulloblastoma” (cancer of the brain), which was removed through surgery, successfully, on 24th July 2014. He received further neurosurgery a month later. But his parents wanted Ashya to be treated with proton therapy, which, they felt, was less harmful
than conventional radiotherapy. At that time, the NHS did not provide proton therapy in the United Kingdom, although it has funded treatment abroad since April 2008, when evidence has shown it to be beneficial. In Ashya’s case, the doctors did not support moving the boy to enable him to receive proton therapy. In response, on 28th August 2014, the parents took their son out of the hospital, without telling the medical team, and boarded a ferry to France. An international manhunt was launched, and, just two days later, they were located in Spain. Ashya’s parents were arrested and he was sent to a local hospital for urgent treatment. The parents were released when the request to extradite them to the UK was withdrawn. The case was taken to the High Court and, on 5th September, 2014, the court
ruled that Ashya could receive proton therapy in Prague. And, after the treatment, Ashya completed his recovery at the HC International Hospital in Marbella. In June 2015, the family said the cancer was in remission. His dad, Brett, said: “It was the right thing to do, and I’m glad we did what we thought was right for Aysha. Look at him now… happy and enjoying the day.” He added: “If we had stayed in Southampton, it’s quite possible he wouldn’t be here today. We need to look toward new technologies for curing cancers, because radiotherapy and chemotherapy have been around since the 1940s or 50s.” Doctors in the UK,who say that Ashya, now eight, has been cleared of his rare brain cancer, have added: “There is no sign of any tumour recurrences.” Since March last year, Ashya has been well enough to attend school, full-time, in the UK.
High-speed drugs! POLICE have seized an estimated 1,300kg of cannabis after an elaborate sea chase, involving five boats and a helicopter, in the strait of Gibraltar. Footage released by the Spanish Tax agency showed incredible pictures of a high-
speed pursuit, with a speedboat heading right towards Spanish police, seemingly, with the intention of ramming into it. The chase is believed to have taken place when a Spanish Tax Agency helicopter managed to track four vessels, with three reportedly loaded with boxes. A Spanish vessel pursued the boats in the water, with officials
reportedly firing warning shots to prevent a collision, while a helicopter recorded the scenes from above. Those on the boats decided to dump the boxes into the sea during the chase, before they eventually managed to escape the authorities. Officials then returned to retrieve the dumped narcotics, seizing 42 boxes of hashish, after the boats got away.

Killer Guardia sergeant jailed for just four years
Gun-dealer caught after 7-month hunt
AN investigation spanning almost seven months was completed when Guardia Civil officers arrested an illegal arms-dealer, and seized a number of firearms. The Guardia, aware of a number of transactions involving these guns and rifles, detailed a squad to track down the dealer, concentrating on the La Rioja area of Logroño.
Main suspect was a 52-year-old local man, thought to have had at least 20 guns obtained in Spain, and, more recently, from the Czech Republic. And authorities there confirmed that the dealer had taken delivery of at least three firearms from sources there. In addition to the guns, the investigation revealed that the dealer had acquired large quantities of ammunition, as well as steel bearings of various calibres, to enable him to make the ammunition
even more deadly. Once sufficient evidence was collected, officers raided two addresses in the area, where they discovered a horde of illegal firearms and gun-making equipment. Along with computer equipment and documents, they seized 19 pistols, three rifles, spare parts, ammunition and gun-making equipment. Some of the pistols recovered were manufactured to fire blanks, but the arms dealer had bored out the barrels to turn them into viable weapons.
AN off-duty GUARDIA Civil officer, who caused a deadly car crash while high on a cocktail of drugs and alcohol last summer, can serve a maximum of just four years in prison.
The news, which has sparked outrage, comes after Malaga Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the 45-year-old culprit, a sergeant named only as Miguel CL, committed a “thoughtless act” that was not “premeditated”. And, under Spanish law, this means he can be convicted only for a section of the most serious of the 14 crimes of which he was accused. The sergeant was held after triggering a pile-up
on the A-7 motorway near Torremolinos. He collided with a Renault car before spinning into a taxi, carrying a family of tourists from Bahrain and Kuwait. The impact killed two women, aged 30 and 47, and a 25-year-old man. Nine others, including one child, were hospitalised. Prior to the smash, the officer was driving at almost 150km/h, which was 50km/h above the speed limit. He later tested positive for alcohol, cocaine and sleeping pills. The sergeant tried to flee the scene after the incident, and, when tracked down, was described as having “shining eyes and dilated pupils”. It later emerged that he had been investigated for inappropriate behaviour on six previous occasions.

UK inheritance tax to be simplified?
Partner, blevins Franks
IF you struggle to navigate the UK’s Inheritance Tax (IHT) regime, you are not alone. Whether you are setting up your estate planning, or sorting out the estate of a departed family member, the system can be hard to follow. Getting your planning wrong may mean your family are faced with unexpected, high, inheritance-tax bills. Now Chancellor Philip Hammond has acknowledged that the rules are “particularly complex”, and asked for a review. UK IHT follows expatriates around the world, since it is based on domicile, rather than residence. While longterm expatriates can adopt a “domicile of choice” outside the UK, this takes time, and is a complex area, so specialist advice and careful planning are essential. If you do shed your UK domicile, only assets situated in the UK are liable to IHT. Expatriates should continue to follow changes to the UK IHT rules, and understand how it interacts with the local inheritance tax in their country of residence. Cross-border estate plan-
ning can be challenging, particularly if you have assets in different countries, or complex, family situations. IHT is charged at 40% on your total, worldwide estate in excess of the current threshold of £325,000 (potentially £650,000 for a couple). A new Residential Nil Rate Band (RNRB) came into effect in April 2017: estates may be entitled to an “additional threshold”, before any IHT becomes due. Starting at £100,000 this tax year, it will increase by £25,000 each year until reaching £175,000 in
2020/21 (and then rise with inflation). It only applies to qualifying, residential property left to direct descendants. Estates over £2 million receive a smaller allowance or nothing at all, depending on the value. While a higher threshold is, of course, welcome, this new “family-home allowance” has an added extra complication. It has also been criticised for discriminating against those who do not have children or property. The rules for lifetime gifts can be even more complex, with the annual exemption
frozen at £3,000, since 1981. Now, Chancellor Philip Hammond has written to the Treasury’s Office of Tax Simplification (OTS): “Inheritance tax, and the system within which it operates, is particularly complex, and I would like to request that the OTS carry out a review. I would be most interested to hear any proposals you may have for simplification, to ensure that the system is fit for purpose, and makes the experience of those who interact with it as smooth as possible.” For many tax practitioners and wealth-management
advisers, this review is long overdue. Besides the taxation of gifts and the new RNRB, the IHT regime for trusts can be a minefield. It is still early days, so we now have to wait and see, and hope, that the system will be improved. However, we need to be realistic and not expect this review to result in much lower IHT bills. IHT is a good earner for the government; HM Treasury expects to raise £5.3 billion in 2017/18, and £6.5 billion by 2022/23. All this illustrates the importance of taking professional advice for your estate planning. Make sure you are up to date on the rules, are navigating them correctly, and shielding your family from paying any more tax than necessary. Too many families pay IHT that could have been mitigated with specialist knowledge and careful planning. Don’t let this happen to your family. The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices, which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. Lowest mortgage rates of all for home-owners EUROZONE interest rates have fallen again, ending February on -0.191%, and reducing the average Spanish mortgage by 54 euros a year. And experts believe the rate, known as the Euribor, will remain below zero for the whole of 2018. A slight rise in January, to -0.189%, proved temporary, and the rate is again at a historic low. Based on a 20-year mort-
gage of 120,000 euros on a “Euribor +1%” contract, which is the average type of home-loan in Spain, it means an annual saving of 4.51 euros a month. The Euribor went into minus figures in February 2016, for the first time in history, in an attempt to help the Eurozone recover from the ongoing recession. And it has not gone above 0% since then. Analyst Joaquín Robles, from XTB, says there is no chance of the Euribor rising until the Eurozone reaches its 2% inflation objective. He added: “In September, the Central European Bank (BCE) will decide again
whether to continue with its current, debt-buying programme, or prolong it in line with the evolution of inflation. “However, the current, long-term provisions lead us to believe we will not see an increase in interest rates until at least the middle of 2019.” But Robles warned that savers should not allow this situation to confuse them, since the length of a mortgage loan is, typically, 25 years, and the current price of money could well increase over that period. “If the economy continues to grow within the next five years, Eurozone interest
rates could rise to up to 3%, which would mean an increase on an average 100,000-euro mortgage, payable over 25 years, of about 250 euros a month,” he said. Fortunately for Spanish mortgage holders, home loans in Spain are reviewed annually, on the anniversary of when they were taken out, rather than moving up or down by the month, as is the case in the UK. This means that homeowners have a whole year to keep an eye on Euribor trends. And, in the unlikely event that these look set to rocket over a short time, which hasn’t happened in a
decade, when rates peaked at around 5.6%, they have time to make arrangements to change their loan to a fixed-rate version. But fixed-rate mortgages in Spain are rare, since they can often cost the homeowner far more money in the long run. Good news for existing and future property-owners in Spain is that they will not have to worry about their mortgage payments shooting up over 2018. And, if Robles’ prediction about a 3% rise in five years is accurate, they have several years to monitor rate changes and act accordingly.

Episode three: Picturing Paradise. Simon Schama examines one of our deepest artistic urges - to depict nature. Simon discovers that landscape painting is seldom a straightforward description of observed nature; rather it’s a projection of dreams and idylls, as well as of escapes and refuges from human turmoil; the elusive paradise on earth. Simon begins in the 10th century, in Song dynasty China. The Song scrolls are never innocent of the values of that world: the landscapes depict immense mountains projecting imperial authority. But as that authority was threatened and overwhelmed, majestic mountains are represented in geological turmoil, writhing and heaving. Imagined paradises in Islamic and Western art are often responses to loss and absence. But paradise could be recovered in the country villas of the Renaissance. Simon goes to the miraculously beautiful Palladian house of Daniele Barbaro in the Veneto, with murals painted by Paolo Veronese to contemplate the world of the cultivated country gentleman. It was in the cooler climate of northern Europe that landscape came into its own as a distinctive type of art. Simon looks at the works of the Northern Renaissance in Germany and the Netherlands, where emerging states sought expression of identity through depiction of their natural worlds. Simon ends in America where the landscapes of America are as expansive as the landscapes of Holland were confined, but there too, in the numinous photography of Ansel Adams, a kind of earthly paradise is revealed and a sense of nationhood is expressed in the natural world.

How did a poor boy from a tiny flat in St Petersburg become one of the world’s most powerful leaders? Admired by Trump, and feared by his rivals, on the eve of his almost certain re-election as president of Russia, The New Tsar reveals the story of Vladimir Putin’s extraordinary rise to power - from a lowly KGB colonel to Boris Yeltsin’s right-hand man and ultimately his successor. There are revelations from Putin’s inner circle at the Kremlin, including former confidante Sergei Pugachev, who helped Putin to power, before falling from favour. Chess-master Gary Kasparov recounts his failed attempt to stand against him and Oligarch Mikhail Khordokovsky, who was jailed and stripped of his wealth, speaks of the consequences of experiencing the wrath of Putin. The programme also hears from former Home Secretary Jack Straw, who recalls Putin’s first encounter with Tony Blair, the leader who Putin apparently attempted to model himself on, and Straw wryly observes that the two are “very similar”.

The Lothians and Borders. Steve Brown is on the trail of an elusive and endangered Scottish creature - the mud snail. They may not be one of nature’s glamour species, but these tiny molluscs play an important role in the ecosystem. Anita Rani cycles along the sands of the East Lothian coast on a ‘fat bike’. With larger than normal tyres they leave virtually no trace in the sand, having as little impact on the natural habitat as possible. Matt Baker visits St Abbs - a community who refused to let their lifeboat service go under. When threatened with closure they independently took on the community lifeboat, saving 104 years of history. There are ten million cattle farmed in the UK, and it is a well-known fact that livestock like cows produce a lot of methane, which contributes to global warming. Adam Henson is in Edinburgh at an agricultural college where they are working on a solution. Tom Heap looks at companies buying up swathes of countryside and selling it on with planning permission for houses.

Guest Stephen Graham Series Overview Action Team is a spoof comedy action thriller series following the exploits of a special branch of MI6. The team is made up of four secret agents; the heroic Logan Mann, mix martial arts and bomb expert Monica Lang, crack sniper Graham Hooper and Huxley, who’s just on work experience. They are overseen by the straight shooting head of operations Ruth Brooks and her assistant called Anne. Steered by his 1913 Continental Railway Guide, Michael Portillo travels one of the most stunning rail routes of the world, through the former Russian empire from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea, taking in present-day Georgia and Azerbaijan. Following the historic Trans-Caucasus Railway, Michael begins in the port of Batumi on the dazzling Caucasian Riviera. He savours the soul of Georgia in its wine and discovers a surprise 19th-century tea plantation in the West Georgian countryside. The seat of power beckons in Kutaisi, home to the wonderful glass dome built for the Parliament of Georgia when it moved here from the capital, Tbilisi, in 2012. At the medieval convent of Gelati Michael sees how magnificent frescoes are being painstakingly restored and finds out about the most powerful king in Georgian history.

Elsie always has the first and final word! ELSIE Eiler is the proud mayor of her Nebraska hometown of Monowi, and, at the age of 84, she can do whatever she likes…and whenever she likes! Not only is she the town’s mayor, but she’s also the town clerk and treasurer, as well as being the smartest, the wealthiest and the youngest resident. In fact, she is the most important person in the entire place. That’s because Monowi is a one-woman town, and she IS that woman, making it the smallest community in the whole of the United States. Unsurprisingly, there is no rush-hour there, and certainly no traffic jams! A 2000 census revealed that Monowi’s population was a whopping two! But that other person was Elsie’s husband, Rudy, who died in 2004. Despite his death, however,
she decided to stay in Monowi, because it was, and always will be, where she resides. She continues to live in a mobile home, close to the town’s only business, the Monowi Tavern, which she owns and operates. She bought the bar with her husband in 1971, and still
works 12-hour days, serving drinks and food to curious visitors. And it’s not her only business. She also runs the town library, housed in a tiny building, and jammed with 5,000 books, which is dedicated to her husband, who was a devoted reader.
Girls bearing up boldy, after missed hen-party A WELSH hen-party raised the temperature somewhat after their flight to the Costa del Sol was cancelled through bad weather. Claire Phillips, 39, plus hens Shari Cadmore, Laura Garlick, Hannah Evans and Emma Davies, slipped into their swimwear before posing in Cardiff Airport’s icy conditions. They should have been travelling to Marbella for the weekend, when their flight was axed. But they made up for it by putting on a dazzling display in the snow. Bride-to-be Claire, from Swansea, who will wed fiancé Simon Evans in April, told Welsh media: “We knew we would have to come back on Monday, so there was no point in trying to rearrange our flights.” The women, who decided to hold the party in Cardiff, stripped off for the racy photo-shoot, with
pedestrians, and even a bus driver, stopping to take snaps. “It was so funny,” said Claire. “We were out there for around 25 minutes. We walked up to an area with loads of snow, and a bus pulled up with loads of tourists. “The bus driver got out and took pictures of us, and so
did passers-by. We didn’t stopped laughing the whole time.” The mum-of-three said the gang were planning to reschedule their Spanish holiday after the wedding. “We are hoping to go in September instead, after the wedding,” added Claire. “We are calling it a ‘Hennymoon’”
Some shrinking US communities set themselves apart from corporate towns, but Mrs Eiler has kept up the required paperwork to maintain Monowi as a village-cum-town. “I‘m the whole thing,” she said. “There’s no need for any elections because I’d be the only one to vote.”
Each year, Elsie completes a municipal road plan to secure funding from the state of Nebraska. She also raises taxes, from herself, to keep the town’s three lamp-posts flickering and the water flowing, and she signs off her own liquor and tobacco licences. Monowi’s oldest resident told the BBC: “When I apply to the state for these licences each year, they send them to the secretary of the town, which is me. “So, I receive them as the secretary, sign them as the clerk and then give them to myself, as the bar owner.” Visitors from around the world have passed through the town to meet her, “and they have been really friendly and curious”, she said. “I know I could always move closer to my children, or stay with them whenever I want, but then I’d have to make all new friends again. “So, hopefully, I will be able to stay here… because it’s where I want to be!”
Harry Potter fakes among huge haul of Disney brands GUARDIA Civil officers have wrecked a huge operation, which had been producing and selling fake Disney and Warner Bros brands, including dozens of items relating to the Harry Potter franchise. A Barcelona shop, which supplied the kind of products Harry Potter readers might expect to find in Diagon Alley, was raided by police last week for selling knock-off copies from China, exclusively. Gryffindor House scarves were on sale, beside Ravenclaw banners, while a glass case offered a selection of wands, which could have come straight from Ollivander’s wand shop itself. But an investigation by the Guardia Civil discovered that all the products offered in the shop were counterfeit, although they were being sold as official merchandise, with a price tag to match. A Guardia Civil spokesman said: “This raid was
part of a wider operation against fake goods, which are arriving by sea and other routes, mostly from China, and being sold in Spain.” The 27th February raid resulted in the seizure of 9,592 counterfeit products, with an estimated sale price of more than 300,000 euros. A 38-year-old Spanish woman, who owns the shop, has been arrested.

‘Fantastic’ win at the Oscars! CHILE’S Spanish-speaking Una mujer fantástica (A Fantastic Woman) won the Best Foreign Language Film gong at last Sunday’s Oscars in Hollywood.
It features transgender actress Daniela Vega, and beat four other contenders to take the prestigious Academy Awards’ prize. As predicted, Gary Oldman won Best Actor for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, which was beaten for Best Picture by The Shape of Water. Other winners included: Best Actress: Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) Supporting Actor: Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards) Supporting Actress:
Allison Janney (I, Tonya) Animated Short: Dear Basketball Live Action Short: The Silent Child Documentary Short: Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405 Song: Remember Me, from the film Coco There was drama right
to the end, when Frances McDormand, at an Oscars after-party, realised her newly-engraved ‘Best Actress’ statue had been stolen. The suspected thief, American Terry Bryant, faces a charge of “grand theft” charge, which could mean a three-year jail sentence
if he is found guilty. That is a real possibility because he was pic-
tured carrying an Oscar as he left the party. The photographer
alerted security, who took the gong from the man without incident. The name Oscar, officially called the Academy Awards, comes from the statuette, which is made of goldplated bronze, weighing 8.5lbs and standing 13.5ins tall. Designed in an Art Deco style, and rumoured to be modelled on Mexican actor Emilio ‘El Indio’ Fernández, it is holding a crusader’s sword, standing on a reel of film with five spokes. The five spokes represent the original branches of the Academy: Actors, Writers, Directors, Producers, and Technicians.
Conwoman back on the prowl, in weeks! SEASONED scammer Paula Neale, now operating as Paula Kari, one of her several aliases, has set up a new business in France, having scarpered from Spanish cops just two weeks ago. She is now offering “bouncy blow-dries and eyebrow-tidying” in Perpignan, at the foot of the Pyranees. The startling news comes soon after the conwoman crossed the border from Spain, with police in hot pursuit, following an ongoing, online, newspaper probe. The mother-of-two, who is accused of taking rental deposits from dozens of victims in Spain over a number of years, had fled to Catalunya following the investigation. She is wanted by Malaga police, and now claims to be a hairdresser. Her Facebook advert says she will visit expats’ homes to blow-
dry their hair for an “ideal night out, a special occasion, or just to save yourself the effort”. Jacqui Field told the Olive Press: “I’m just another of this woman’s victims, whom she scammed last year when she sublet my house in the UK. “I assume this is just a way for her to get into some expat homes in France, to see how she can scam them!” Neale, a 43-year-old mother- of-three, took rental deposits for properties she didn’t own in Spain, and, allegedly, ransacked properties
she had rented, before selling the stolen goods online. She has perfected her craft for years, knowing that holiday-makers would, more often than not, give up and go home, rather than stay to file a denuncia. Yet despite four newspaper stories, and at least eight denuncias against her, she has yet to be picked up by police. Meanwhile she has set up a new account on Tinder, and, in a racy profile, describes herself as “not your typical English woman abroad”. At least that’s true!

WITH virtually anything you buy, you get a guarantee of some sort or another. Cars are sold with a guarantee, too, but there are different types, and I will cover, briefly, those given on used cars.
Types of guarantee *A legal guarantee, defined as obligatory, is offered by a seller, and is dedicated to the purchase and sale of vehicles, new or
9th March - 15th March 2018
How guarantees apply second-hand, to an end user/consumer. The legal guarantee is a combination of rights the law grants the consumer, and both parties cannot agree to renounce the guarantee. *A commercial guarantee is defined as the combination of benefits the seller gives the buyer, which are additional to the legal guarantee. This type is given at the seller’s discretion, and covers what he/she deems appropriate. *A “hidden-defects” guarantee is defined as the warranty offered by the seller against habits or defects that the seller, a company or an individual, knew were present at the time of sale, but were not clearly explained and accepted
at the time of sale. This type of guarantee is important when a third party is selling on behalf of someone because, often, he/she is aware of the vehicle’s defects and has not informed the prospective buyers, claiming, subsequently, that “he/ she was not aware”, which often causes a problem for the purchaser. Is the legal guarantee law applicable in cases of a commission-based sale, or a broker sale? On the basis of a broker sale, a consumer asks a seller to obtain on his/ her behalf, a specific vehicle. The broker then sells the vehicle to the consumer, and, in this instance, the law considers it to be a sale between a seller and a consumer, so the legal guarantee is
applied. This does not happen too often here in Tenerife. A commission-based sale is far more common, and the majority of car-dealers work on this basis: a consumer hands his/ her personal vehicle to a car-sales company to sell on his/her behalf. The sale is considered a sale between individuals, so the legal guarantee is not applicable because the seller is simply collecting a commission. However, the seller must be very clear with the purchaser, at the time of sale, that the vehicle is being sold on a commission basis. But the hidden-defect guarantee still applies. How long is the guarantee? When the buyer is a business, and the seller
is a car-sales company, no legal guarantee is offered. But the hiddendefects guarantee is applicable, and a claim must be made within six months. When the buyer is a car-sales company, a legal guarantee is not offered, yet the hiddendefects guarantee is, again, applicable. But the claim must be made within 30 days. When the buyer and seller are both individuals, then the only applicable guarantee is the hidden-defects one, and the claim must be made within six months. When the buyer is a consumer and the seller is a car-sales company, then a legal guarantee is obligatory. The validity is two years on new vehicles and one year on second-hand
vehicles. Can a guarantee be limited to a number of kilometres? In the case of the legal guarantee, the kilometres cannot be limited, but they do play a vital role in the items covered during the guarantee period. In the case of the commercial guarantee, the answer is Yes. The guarantee is an additional extra offered by the seller, who has the right to limit the kilometres, as he/she does with the time for which the cover is provided. This is just a brief outline of some of the conditions and circumstances relating to guarantees, and consumers should make sure they ask any relevant questions at the time of purchase.
A good night’s sleep
By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic
A GOOD night’s sleep is more important than most people realise. The health benefits are endless, and so are the negatives of not getting enough. This is quite relevant to me at the moment, because, with this heat and a newborn baby, the lack of sleep is not
letting me think of much else! So, having a nice comfortable bed and mattress to sleep on is essential, but choosing a mattress isn’t always easy. The thing to consider, when buying a new mattress, is the support; it should support your spine, whether you are lying on your back or your side. Try them out in the shop, and ask for a pillow. Lay how you would at home. Going in a shop and sitting on the mattress does not tell you how comfortable it is. There are various types of mattresses, and price ranges. Here are some of the most common types: Open coil: these are
sprung mattresses made from one continuous wire. They can offer different levels of firmness, and are in the more economical range. Pocket sprung: these are higher-quality, sprung mattresses. Pocket sprung means that each spring is individually packed in its own pocket, keeping the mattress firm, and adapting to each person’s weight. Memory foam: a very popular choice of material which is very comfortable because it molds to the body, distributing body weight evenly. Personally I don’t think there is any need for a complete memory-foam mattress; a combination
of pocket sprung and memory foam is perfect, having the memory foam as the top layer. This way, you get the best of both worlds. The combination is called a hybrid mattress. Bed linen also makes a great difference, and there is nothing better than goodquality sheets, especially in this heat. I recommend Egyptian cotton, to keep you
cool and comfortable. Then, of course, comes the dressing of the bed. There is nothing more attractive and eye-catching than a well-dressed bed! I know some people can disagree, and find nothing more irritating than having to throw all the cushions off at bed time, but I think it’s a small price to pay.
Comfort may be the priority, but the fun bit is to make it look luxurious by adding layers with throws, runners, different textures and colours, loose cushions … bliss! Muebles Chic have had a new delivery of mattresses this week, with new models available. Come and test them out. We also take your old mattress away when we deliver.

K9 Animal News She is seven months old, and came into the refuge through no fault of her own. Her previous owners had to leave the country, and couldn't take her with them. She is extremely friendly and very beautiful. Her colour is unique, and she is sure to capture your heart! Like any young puppy, she is very playful, and loves to run around and go crazy for a bit. She is also etremely loving, and is sure to sit by your side for a fuss. She is very well behaved, and already knows basic commands like “sit” and “paw”. She loves going for walks and is very good with other dogs, as long as they want to play, too! Because she is still young and learning, she needs an adopter with the time and patience to train her. She will make a fabulous addition to any household, and we hope her stay at the refuge will be short. Please can someone give this gorgeous girlie a second chance, as she does not deserve to grow up in a refuge? If you can offer Zafira a home, please contact us on 6676 38468. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.
Cats Welfare News GIVING a kitten, cat, puppy or dog a new home is one of the most exciting and rewarding commitments you can make, and has positive benefits for every member of the family. Most owners will agree that their pets' inquisitive natures can sometimes lead them into the occasional scrapes, and the cost of veterinary treatment to get them back to full health can easily escalate. With an insurance policy, owners can take a back seat and enjoy a wide range of benefits for their “four-legged friends”. Because it's so important, we are now collaborating with Ferdiesa Insurance SL, to offer you a great deal. Don't speak Spanish? No problem; they speak perfect English. There are three levels of policy to choose from; Bronze, Silver and Gold, so a level to suit every budget. Contact them on 6153 97908, or e-mail info@ferdiesa.com quoting promotion code FDS 21 for a special deal that includes a 10-euro donation to Cats Welfare, with each new policy. Not only will you be helping your pet, you'll be helping Cats Welfare, too.

Go with me on life's difficult journey, because everything is easier for me with you by my side.” The love we receive from our animal friends is completely unconditional, and there is a special bond and loyalty that brings us so much happiness in many ways. The cruelty we see, daily, when dogs arrive
at the refuge, is heartbreaking, but the reward of seeing them happy and healthy again gives us the strengh to carry on with our work. By Val Sainsbury TURMERIC milk, also known as golden milk, is an ancient health beverage, which has recently been rising in popularity in different parts of the globe. As part of traditional Indian Ayurveda medicine, this drink is known to provide all kinds of health benefits to those who consume it on a
regular basis. You can create this powerful tonic in the comfort of your home. This dairy-free, turmeric milk recipe will help you reach the peak of your health in no time. Benefits: The health benefits of drinking turmeric milk mainly come from its ability to reduce inflammation. This has shown to be very beneficial in treating a broad range of diseases such as heart disease, cancer, metabolic syndrome, Alzheimer's and various degenerative conditions. Adding dark pepper into the mix aids in the absorption of curcumin, allowing for a faster and more potent effect. Ginger helps in improving
digestive function, while also providing a calming effect. Adding other ingredients, such as cinnamon and nuts, will further add to the nutritional value of this powerful tonic. Turmeric milk recipe · 2 cups almond, coconut or cashew milk · 1 teaspoon ground or grated turmeric · ½ teaspoon grated ginger · Pinch of ground pepper or four whole peppercorns · ½ tablespoon virgin coconut oil or almond oil · 1-2 cardamom pods, lightly crushed · Raw honey or quality maple syrup, to taste (optional) Procedure
Heat the milk in a saucepan over a low heat for 2-3 minutes. Once the milk is warm, add the turmeric, ginger, pepper, and cardamom. Let the mixture simmer for five minutes, so that all the flavours and nutritional benefits of the spices will be adequately infused into the milk. Remove from the heat and pour through a strainer, to remove the solid ingredients from the milk. Add coconut oil and your choice of sweetener, according to your taste. Drink immediately after preparing, as this drink is best served hot. This recipe is good for two
39 CW
servings, so adjust the recipe, depending on the number of people. Suggestions The proportion of ingredients used in this turmeric milk recipe is the universallyapproved one, and used in most recipe books. Of course, you are free to experiment with this recipe to suit your taste. You can add or reduce some of the ingredients to obtain the flavour you want. You can also add other healthy ingredients, such as vanilla and cinnamon to improve the aroma, taste, and potency. Avoid using regular sugar because it may cause chronic inflammation.

Villar double sparks play-off hopes again By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
Gimnastic 1 CD Tenerife 2
WITH Tenerife hitting form at just the right time, as they did last year, their fans are talking about reaching the promotion play-offs again. The team are in 12th position, but this sparkling victory put Joseba Etxeberria’s team just six points behind their opponents, Real Oviedo, tonight (Friday), in the last, play-off slot. The new coach has now inspired three wins and a draw from his four games, and the players are bristling with confidence. Nastic were a niggly side, scrapping to escape the drop-zone. But Tenerife relished the physical battles, and showed some excellent skills. Longo is now a marked man, and Assoubre sent him crashing in an early exchange. But Tenerife’s topscorer is becoming more resilient. Keeper Dani Hernandez denied Muniz, before Nastic took a 10th-minute lead. Tenerife-born Maikel chipped a perfect ball past the visitors’ defence to find Morente just onside, and he was able to flick the ball past Dani. The setback served only to prod Tenerife into top gear, just a minute later. Juan Villar shielded a loose ball down off his chest, and turned to fire the ball past the home keeper. Acosta nearly built on it,
but shot wide, while Alberto, having another outstanding game, put power into a header that beat the keeper, but the ball clipped the bar and went out. Coach Joseba has installed an impressive work-rate in the players, who are looking to play each other into the game all the time, and are willing to cover back for team-mates.
Hard work may not be the most glamorous quality, but it’s the glue that binds this squad together. Longo spurned a glaring chance just before the halfhour, when he drifted wide and found a defender, instead of bearing down on the home goal. Never mind, because he was about to be involved in a piece of football poetry. Juan Villar made space to thread the ball through to Longo, whose high ball was headed down at the far post by Acosta… and there was Villar, waiting to tap it in the net for the lead. That’s how the half ended, and though Alex Mula looked frustrated to have dragged his late shot wide, the coach didn’t have much to complain about. Fate likes to give with one hand and take with the other. Juan Villar had a couple of bad knocks in the first half and lasted just 15 minutes more before being subbed by Aitor Sanz. The striker has had more than his share of injuries, and the latest leg-muscle problem could keep him out for a couple of weeks. Maybe his departure gave Gimnastic a little boost, because Dani had to smother a curling shot that looked goal-bound, and the home side forced a couple of corners. But Carlos Ruiz, in particular, helped the visiting defence repel the threats. Malbasic was given a return to action from the bench, in place of Longo, and looked keen to impress. Sanz gave Gimnastic a scare with a well-struck, looping shot from outside the area, and Suso took over from Acosta. Captain Suso was soon in the groove down the right. He fed Ruiz, who put the ball in the net, only for the ref to rule offside. It was a good call, like the home goal, and a decent afternoon’s work from him. There was a burst of activity at the tail-end of the game. Alex Mula hit the post, and Malbasic fired a great chance, plumb at the keeper. The five minutes of injury-time stretched the nerves a little, but CDT’s run continues.

MARINO were flying, with a two-goal lead that hinted at more in the second half, but they were brought down to earth as El Cotillo clawed their way back for a share of the spoils. The all-blues will be wondering how they failed to capitalise on an opening 45 minutes, full of confidence and attacking flair. The unfamiliar setting of the Anexo stadium, next door to their normal home ground, has an artificial pitch. But Marino soon adjusted to its slightlyslower pace, with Ahmed breaking down the right flank and Zeben opening up the left side. Yassine was the perfect target man, strong in the air and on the ground, and the Cotillo defence struggled to keep him in check. Marino’s Pedro set up Zeben, who shot over the
Pedro, whose shooting from the spot was just as deadly as that of his namesake, as he reduced the arrears. David had to be alert to catch a free-kick from Cotillo, who saw a way back into the game and looked more positive. Yassine was still the big home threat, and a foul on the edge of the box gave him a chance with a freekick, but the defensive wall remained solid. Marino’s Ricky arrived from the bench and created a few more openings. Zeben tried to chip the keeper, whose reach was just enough to cover the ball. But some of the Marino passing was going astray, and moves weren’t quite coming off. Cotillo pushed for a late goal, and succeeded when defender Carlos headed in at the far post. Yassine went close in the dying seconds, and Saavedra put the last kick of the game over Cotillo’s bar, to leave Marino still 12th in the league table.

bar, and Yassine powered through the centre, laying the ball off to Ahmed, who was blocked by a defender. Zeben, enjoying the freedom of the pitch, twice, in quick succession, tested the Fuerteventura team’s keeper. Hard-tackling Cotillo forced their own chances at the other end, and Favarell made a timely header away
from a corner against Marino. After 20 minutes, Ahmed had to go off for injury treatment, but Yassine continued to torment the Cotillo defence, rounding a defender to put Marino ahead. Ahmed wasn’t able to return, so Hector Pano came on in a defensive role as the coach shuffled the pack.
A deserved, second goal for Marino came a few minutes later, as Pedro picked up a loose ball and drilled his shot home. It could easily have been 3-0 by the break. Cotillo’s keeper fumbled a shot from Yassine, but got away with it, and Ubay saved his side from more punishment with a well-timed tackle on Zeben as he shaped up to shoot. Maybe the real Marino returned to the old stadium during the break, in their minds anyway, because the side who picked up from the 2-0 advantage were much tamer in the second half. Cotillo sensed the difference, and their sub, Sandro, added some urgency to their attack to give Marino plenty of problems. Yassine hit the post for Marino, which proved another turning point. Cotillo pushed forward and won a penalty, and they, too, had a No.10 called
Saga of two Legends By Andy Maughan THE fight for first place at the top of the First Division is developing into a two-team shootout, with leaders Legends A and second-place Legends Elite both enjoying fantastic, winning streaks.

The battle for top in the Second Division is looking just as tight, with a three-way war envisaged. That’s because two points separate the top trio. NO LOUNGING ABOUT! ALL the Pas O Nadas A players were in top form after travelling to Emerald Lounge, resulting in a resounding, 7-1 victory for the side. Wattie hit a 180 and Daddy Cool a sensational, 14-dart leg, while Andy and Gualty both finished on the bull. But Emerald put up a good show, nevertheless. Palms Pool Bar were also hit for seven by Phoenix Bar, who had Mitch to thank for his contribution of two maximums. Although the match between Sundowners and Scruffy Macs finished with an identical, 7-1 away win, things could have been different, had games been played over three legs. But Tom hit his own maximum, and Sundowners, who did their best during the match, were unlucky. The Pub hosted The
Loch-In A and won 5-3, Joel starring for the home team with three perfect darts and some quality finishing. The Waterfall are getting closer to victory every week, this time going down in the trebles, to lose against Ourplace Playboys by the closest margin. Another tight game was played out as Boothen welcomed Spear Chuckers, the latter coming out on top, by claiming the trebles for a 5-3 success. Lady Macs, who are showing great promise, are getting better by the week. They took Buzzin B’s all the way, only to lose in the trebles. But, if they continue their progress, they will be ones to watch in future. Naughty Nautas also took visitors Sandys down to the wire, but the title-chasers came good in the end, securing the team game and taking valuable points. But rivals Legends were given a scare at Marilyns, who, deservedly, won the trebles

Heart-breaking Final loss MEMORIES of big crowds, big wins, and, ultimately, a heartbreaking final defeat in the Queen’s Cup, will stay with Arona Tenerife Sur for a long time.
Last Friday and Saturday, nearly 2,000 people watched each game in La Laguna, as Arona powered through their quarter and semi-final, before losing out on the big prize. But it will surely inspire them to continue raising their standards. On the Friday, Arona
opened with a 3-0 set victory over CC 7 Palmas Gran Canaria. They dominated the match with a 2521, and two 25-17 victories. That brought them up against Santa Cruz team Dimorol Libbys, and, thanks to the driving force of Colombian Wanda Banquero, they came out on top with set scores of 18-25, 25-18, 25-27, and 23-25. The Sunday final was always going to be tough as they faced up to Logrono, from La Rioja. It was live on TV Canaria, and, in front of a packed
sports hall, Arona couldn’t get into their stride, going down in straight sets 25-18, 2524, and 25-22. There was a lot of praise for Arona, and
player-coach Romina Lamas and Elzbieta Nykiel were chosen to be among the six best players of the tournament. Third-placed Arona,
back to Spanish Premier League action tomorrow (Saturday), travel to CV San Cugat, who are just below them in the table.

Iberostar’s rusty return
Granadilla’s
local Fan Zone AFTER a free week, Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife are back in action on Sunday, entertaining Athletic Bilbao in San Isidro, at noon.
It’s a vital clash because the visitors are just above Granadilla in third position, and the home side have ambitions to overtake them. They should pull in a big crowd, because the club work hard to attract and keep supporters.
Tomorrow (Saturday), they are running a free Fan Zone, from 4pm, in El Medano plaza, which is just a throwin away from Granadilla’s former home ground, and they still have a strong following there. This weekend, for the first time ever, Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife are appearing on the Spanish pools coupon. El Guiniela has included a selection of games from the women’s Spanish Premier League, as part of the ongoing International Women’s Day celebrations yesterday (Thursday).
THE two-week break for international games played its part in a slow return to action for Iberostar Tenerife.
Sunday’s home league defeat by Andorra caught them in particularly sluggish form, as they went down 78-69. But Wednesday night’s 7166 win at UCAM Murcia, in the European Champions League, at least left hope for the return clash in
Wednesday’s second leg, in La Laguna. At home, Tenerife struggled to a 16-14, first-quarter advantage against Andorra, but they were on the slide after that with scores of 1924, 15-21 and 19-19. Mr Reliable, Mateusz Ponitka, didn’t drop his standards, recording a 16-point haul. But the support was patchy, and Tenerife have slipped to ninth in Spain’s top league. The short trip to Murcia in mainland Spain offered a chance of redemption,
and the winning scoreline should have been bigger. But they conceded two last-minute baskets, which slashed six points off the margin. It was quite a cautious game in the opening stages, and quarter scores went 1415, 22-23, 14-18, and 16-15 as Murcia staged a minirecovery in the final section. Tim Abromaitis starred for Tenerife, with 13 points, but the team know they will need to be sharper in league and cup to ensure a bold finish to the season.
