THE Green Party is preparing for an all-out assault on lots of venues in the South of Tenerife tomorrow (Saturday), to acknowledge St Patrick’s Day, which is celebrated the world over. And various international buildings and iconic landmarks actually do turn green.

For the fourth consecutive year, Adeje Town’s Plaza de España has linked up with Global Greening, a collection of international buildings and iconic landmarks, which will be flooded in emerald green to celebrate Ireland’s most international of national festivals, in honour of its patron saint.

Legendary Prof Hawking, who captivated our island THE most famous scientist on the planet, Professor Stephen Hawking, who died aged 76 on Wednesday, featured in two Starmus festivals in Tenerife, in 2014 and two years later.

He loved the scientific festival and the island, as well as its weather, so much so that, after sailing over from Southampton in September 2015 to promote the following year’s event, he said he had an urge to buy a holiday home here.

The renowned scientist, revered as the greatest since Albert Einstein, could solve astrophysical conundrums beyond most people’s comprehension.

Tragically, he had suffered from Motor Neurone disease since he was 21, yet he was feted wherever he went on the island.

Alas, Starmus organisers pulled the plug on Tenerife,

after a lack of funding by the Canarian Government and big businesses for the 2016 show. But the next Starmus Festival, also featuring the Professor, was launched in Norway in 2017.

Starmus was a unique, international gathering, focused on celebrating astronomy, space exploration and rock music (courtesy of Queen’s Brian May), along

with art and allied sciences, such as biology and chemistry.

It was founded by Garik Israelian, an astronomer at the Canarian Institute for Astrophysics in Tenerife.

Adeje Plaza not so square Incredibly, Adeje’s green Plaza was featured last year alongside Rome’s Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the London Eye, the Great Wall of China, Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer statue, the One World Trade Centre in New York, Niagara Falls, Budapest’s Chain Bridge and the Matsue Castle in Japan.

People of all ages and creeds can, and do, join in the festivities.

True, it’s a traditional annual fixture for the Irish, and Roman Catholics everywhere should be trotting off to Holy Mass as early as possible.

Then it’s all getting down to dressing up in the green, white and gold of Ireland.

Anything goes, and a peep inside, or outside, many Tenerife bars tomorrow, Irish or not, will prove to be a real eye-opener, if you’ve never,

before, witnessed the celebrations.

Obviously, Irish music will be predominant, and many of our leading entertainers will be singing their hearts out, with The Fields of Athenry high on their list - by request, of course.

That has just about become Ireland’s national anthem these days, and Liverpool FC fans have also adopted it.

There will certainly be Magic from two of the three M3 members, Johnny Grennan and Paul Fitzpatrick. They perform brilliantly, with Marc Craig, at the Magic nightclub, in Las Americas, and are in great demand tomorrow.

Paul, who sings and plays keyboard, has three, separate gigs at The Irish Oak, in Torviscas, as does lead guitarist and singer Johnny.

They might even team up together, as they did in the Dubliner

Band, before creating the trio M3. Other singers performing there include Terry Bury, Phil O’Neill and Irish Frank.

Paddy O’Kelly’s, celebrating its first birthday in Las Americas, opposite the Columbus hotel, features resident Irishman Billy McCracken, as well as Simon McIlroy, Scotty Henderson, Hayley Butler and others.

Another Irish pub in Las Americas is Murphy’s, based in Arona’s Av. Arquitecto Gómez Cuesta, where Dermot O’Hara, Special Brew Tenerife (Ollie and John Cusack), plus Laura and Pete, will be entertaining you throughout the afternoon and evening.

And Fergal Flaherty, as he has been doing for many years, will be looking after you at the Hole in the Wall bar, in Parque de la Paz, Las Americas.

But he was renowned for his humour, and he had a special button that cracked jokes!

Prime Minister Theresa May led the praise for him, saying: “He was one of the greatest scientists of his generation. His courage, humour and determination inspired people across the world.”

His three children, Lucy, Robert and Tim, said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away.

“He was an extraordinary man, whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence, with his brilliance and humour, inspired people across the world.

“He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it weren’t home to the people you love’. We will miss him forever.”

Dad’s girlfriend admits to officers that she murdered his son AS thousands of mourners attended the funeral of Gabriel Cruz Ramirez at Almeria Cathedral on Tuesday, prime suspect Ana Julia Quezada confessed to Guardia Civil officers that she had killed the eight-yearold child.

The 43-year-old girlfriend of Gabriel’s father said she hit the boy “hard on the head” with the blunt end of an axe, with which he attacked her, and knocked him unconscious.

Quezada added that she had strangled him in a state of panic, before taking off his clothes and burying the body.

The alleged murder weapon has yet to be found, despite a Guardia search, but they have found the clothes, which she dumped in a bin, some 30km from the murder scene.

She told police the child had planned to help her paint a house on a family estate in nearby Rodalquillar, which the boy’s father was renovating. But he became angry with her.

His disappearance, nearly a fortnight earlier, sparked a huge hunt by thousands of people.

The body of the tragic boy, who went missing from Las Hortichuelas, near Nijar, Almeria, on 27th February, was found last Sunday in Vicar, in the boot of a car, driven by Quezada.

The woman had taken part in searches involving

thousands of professionals and volunteers. And she was the person who “found”

a vest, containing traces of Gabriel’s DNA. But her movements had been monitored for several days, and, on Sunday, when officers stopped her car, they found the youngster’s body, which she had dug up, under a blanket.

Then, after several denials,

Quezada confessed that she did kill him in self-defence.

At around 4.30pm the same day, a hearse carrying Gabriel’s white coffin arrived at a chapel, where hundreds of people paid their respects, and offered condolences to the family.

Government Minister Juan

Ignacio Zoido said: “What an example of fortitude and humanity Patricia and Angel are giving us, turning so much pain into hope. All our affection and encouragement to them.

You will always be with us, rest in peace #GabrielCruz.”

A judge, heading the case in Almeria, still has unanswered questions. He will want to know why the property where the boy was killed was not inspected earlier, and whether Quezada actually took him there with the intention of murdering him.

Sexy videos unfair, Overloaded Spaniards says angry woman gave drug haul away!

A GRAN Canaria man has been arrested by police for publishing intimate, internet videos of himself and his former British girlfriend.

The investigation began, via Interpol, when Humberside police asked for collaboration with their Spanish counterparts to clarify a complaint, which had been lodged in the UK. It was made by a woman, who claimed she had been a victim of harassment and extortion for more than four years, by a man she met in 2012, while on holiday in Ibiza.

After conducting a longdistance relationship, both parties travelling between the UK, Gran Canaria and Ibiza, the

woman decided to end the relationship.

The intimate videos then came to light, and threats were made that if she left the man, his recordings would be released across the internet.

She claims that the threats persuaded her to stay with the man a little longer, before parting from him for good, The woman then discovered that the intimate recordings, for which she gave no consent, were published on various, pornographic websites.

Her former boyfriend, who was located and identified, is being held by National police in Maspalomas, Gran Canaria, awaiting court procedures.

TWO Spaniards were each sentenced to 16 months in prison, after attempting to smuggle cannabis, worth more than 165,000 euros, through Newcastle Airport.

Carlos Gonzalez-Cortes and Leon Espada travelled on a flight from Alicante Airport to the North East, each with a large suitcase.

Border Force officials became suspicious of the pair after they appeared to be travelling alone, while carrying the family-sized suitcases.

Neither of the men knew the codes for their suitcases when approached by

the officials. And when they were eventually opened, each case contained cannabis, weighing 12.5kg.

Gonzales-Cortes, 46, claimed that a Buddhist in Malaga had asked him to take the drug to give to UK cancer patients, while Espada, 63, who admitted to having money problems, said he’d been offered 1,500 euros to smuggle the drug.

The pair admitted their attempt to import cannabis and were, subsequently, sent to prison.

Following the case, Frank Cox, a Central CID officer from Northumbria Police, said: “This was a really huge seizure, and it was amazing that these offenders thought they would get away with it.

“They were bringing

cannabis into this country, with the intention of selling it to street dealers, who would spread it across the streets of the North East.

“Not only is cannabis an illegal drug, but it brings with it a lot of associated crime, which can have a devastating impact on many of our local communities.”

He added: “With dealings of this scale, we nearly always find associated violence and disorder, so it is important that we take illegal drugs off the street at the source of the problem.

“I want to thank our colleagues at Newcastle International Airport, and the UK Border Force, who, ultimately, stopped this huge haul of drugs hitting our region.”

Schoolboy driven to the brink A BOY of 15, believed to be a victim of school bullying, jumped into a ravine from a bridge in San Miguel on Tuesday, in an attempt to kill himself.

In fact, he fractured several bones throughout his body, including his ankles and hips.

But he survived the fall and is now in a hospital’s intensivecare unit. Sources say that bullying does go on at the school, but another source says that it was down to the teenager’s Anime video-game addiction.

The incident happened at 9am after the teenager had left a post on instagram saying: “Well, I’ve come this far, the reason for me wanting to die is simple, I don’t want to live any more, thank you to all who made me happy and I’m sorry to all

those who will be affected by my death, but I cannot do this any more.”

He then left his school bag and mobile phone at the busstop next to his secondary school in Las Zocas.

When his friends saw the message, they alerted the Local Police, who called the ambulance service, and then arrived, promptly, at the bridge from where the boy had jumped.

They found the youngster at the bottom of the ravine, in what appeared to be a serious condition.

Guardia Civil officers, the Fire Services and psychologists also attended the scene to assist with the rescue.

Evicted, after family had rented home for 80 years A COUPLE with a young child were evicted on Wednesday from their Los Cristianos home, which had been rented by the family for 80 years.

Vile trio jailed after humiliating alcoholic THREE men, accused of the manslaughter of a Briton, who was found at Malaga Airport with his genitals inside an empty tuna tin, and slices of ham on his buttocks, have been jailed.

Irishman James O’Byrne, 59, from Cork, plus Finnish pair Jussi Petteri Munck, 41, and Mika Tapio Soininem, 48, pleaded guilty to the charge.

They agreed a plea bargain with prosecutors, and will each serve 2½ years in a Spanish prison.

The incident happened after Steven Allford, a homeless, alcoholic Londoner, died on a bench outside the Costa del Sol airport’s railway station in October 2016.

His trousers were pulled down and plastic ties had been used to bind his wrists and ankles.

The deceased, who had been drinking heavily, choked to death on his own

vomit. But magistrate Santiago Calvo Cervera believed that the ties might have contributed, by preventing him from moving freely.

He said in a three-page ruling: “They didn’t just tie him to the bench, which Mr Munck made sure was done, but they filmed Mr Allford, and were also laughing about his helplessness.

“They put a lighted cigarette in his mouth, after first wedging it between his buttocks, and forced his naked testicles into an empty tuna tin.

“They behaved as if they were presenting a news report and posted the video on to Soininem’s Facebook page, after he filmed what was happening.

“When they had finished laughing, they left Mr Allford to his fate.”

During the initial hearing, the two Finnish men re-

peatedly claimed that the stunt “was just a joke”, and that they only wanted to make fun of the victim, with one of them recording it on his mobile phone, before uploading the video to Facebook.

The footage, deleted quickly, led to detectives identifying the culprits, and it also proved that Mr Allford was alive as he lay, face-down, while being mocked.

One of the Finns was tracked to a prison in his homeland, where he was incarcerated for a separate offence, while the other man was held at his home, before the pair were extradited to Spain.

O’Byrne was arrested in February 2017 as he slept rough in a tent in Algeciras, Cadiz, having earlier told investigators that he had only seen the incident from afar, and that he “hoped they would find the culprit”.

NEWS IN BRIEF Yet another hiker problem

GUARDIA Civil officers, attached to the Mountain Searchand-Rescue group, plus the help of local fire services from Santiago del Teide, were called to a rescue operation on Monday afternoon in Masca.

An emergency call was made because one of two hikers fell while walking in a deep ravine there, suffering various injuries.

The search-and-rescue team, who climbed down the ravine to reach the men, put the injred man on a stretcher and carried him to an opening at the other side of the ravine.

It was getting late, and, because the weather was deteriorating, the team decided it would be safer for everyone involved to camp overnight, inside a nearby cave.

At 7.45am on Tuesday, a Guardia Civil helicopter arrived, and evacuated the whole group. It touched down first at a Santiago del Teide football pitch, where the emergency team, and the injured man’s companion, were dropped off.

It then took the injured man to a nearby hospital for treatment and observation.

El Hierro rocked a little

A TREMOR in the waters of El Hierro, some 31km deep on the south coast, was felt at 5.35am on Tuesday by El Pinar residents.

The seismic movement registered 3.5 on the Richter scale, and the National Geographic Institute is monitoring the situation.

Machine falls on worker

A MAN, working on road maintenance, suffered severe bruising after a nasty accident in Valle Hermosa, La Gomera, when the machine he was using fell on top of him.

The incident happened on La Dama’s main road, and an emergency call soon brought an ambulance racing to the scene, as well as the Guardia Civil.

Medics felt the bruising should be treated at a local hospital, to where he was transferred for observation.

The hard-shoulder baby

A BABY was born in the back of an ambulance last Wednesday, as her mother travelled to hospital for the birth, in Gran Canaria.

In fact, the tiny girl came into this world on the hard shoulder of the GC1 motorway, because mum simply couldn’t hang on any longer.

With the assistance of the ambulance crew, plus help from the Guardia Civil’s traffic department officers, there were no complications.

Both mother and child were admitted to hospital for observation, and were said to be doing well.

A water journey, through the ages “THE Water Route/ Ruta del Agua”, now an annual Adeje event, takes place this Sunday and is designed to explain the significance of water in the evolution of the local society, which has always depended on this vital resource.

As in previous years, the route will be led by members of Adeje’s municipal folklore group, wearing costumes of bygone days, acting and explaining, in English and Spanish, the route taken by water in Adeje over the centuries.

Participation in the event is free, and Adeje Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira García said: “The historical riches of our borough are very important, reflecting our history as a people.

“We believe the rescue and valuing of these traditions, through projects such as this, are of huge benefit; not just for residents, but for our visitors as well.

“Through different cultural experiences, they can also enjoy new experiences and sensations.”

She added: “We are extolling these historic elements, unique to us as a town, and which we can also promote as a tourist attraction. The water route is an excellent example of this.”

The trip begins at 11am on Sunday, at the entrance to the Barranco del Infierno (near the Otelo restaurant), and will take participants on a journey through time, via various old water mills and fountains, such as the Molina de Arriba, the Fuente de los Tres Chorros,

and other historic, stopping points in the town.

In parallel, those following the route will also discover something of the lives of Adeje’s marquises.

During the 19th century, liberal politician Pascual Madoz, a member of a progressive party and author of a statistical, geographical dictionary of Spain, described Adeje as (translated) “a territory with a sad and monotonous aspect in the valley, surrounded by hills; the rest of the area is delightful, with some of the most fertile stretches to be found on this side of the island: water to irrigate the land, the walk known as the Infierno, which descends from the highest part in the mountains to the canal, forming the Barranco del Agua (Water Ravine)”.

During Sunday’s walk, participants can delve into details of the borough’s past, which they can appreciate, first-hand, through a series of set-pieces, created just for this event.

Adeje has always held a privileged position in the island, as much in previous centuries as today.

The borough boasted the greatest number of springs in the midlands of the Tenerife island: two in the Erques ravine, three in the area known as El Aserradero, two in the Barranco del Infierno, one at the top of the Barranco del Agua, another at the foot of the Roque de los Brezos and, finally, one which was by the Roque de Imoque.

The borough was also home to a number of important Guanche (Tenerife aborigine) settlements, and, of course, to the Gran Tinerfe, a king among Guanches, whose statue now sits at the entrance to the town.

Following the conquest of the South, and, in particular, of Adeje, water played a vital part, and the hydroresources from the Barranco del Infierno - the Adeje River - ran from the springs to the sea.

Three cheers for airport-tax falls AIRPORT taxes for next year will go down by 12%, which is three times as much as planned initially, to encourage growth in the air travel industry.

Public Works, Minister Íñigo de la Serna, said the taxes, which were frozen last year, will still go down by just 3% in 2018, as

originally announced, and by 5% in 2020. But they will be slashed by 12% next year, instead of the 4% agreed at first.

De la Serna, at the opening ceremony of the World Air Travel Management Conference, added that the reductions meant Spain’s airport taxes would be the EU’s lowest.

A record number of foreign tourists arrived in Spain by air last year. And Enaire,

the mother company of airports’ governing body AENA, actually reported 52 consecutive months of increased figures for arrivals.

Generally, airport taxes affect the price of flights directly, and they also influence carriers’ operational decisions.

These include whether or not to set up new bases, or keep the existing ones in Spain.

Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice

T

he majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 euros or £85,000. So far, so good?

This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife).

What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you.

In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative?

A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

‘NASA watching me, through a lamp-post’ POLICE have seized an arsenal of weapons from a man who believed that US space agency NASA was monitoring him, via a lamp-post.

PIRATES have never been so welcome, and Arona didn’t want to say goodbye to the seafaring swashbucklers and their Carnival army.

Over 35,000 people lined the route of Sunday’s Coso parade through Los Cristianos, which lasted nearly two hours. The Queens had been elected a few days earlier, with Inma Afonso Darias winning the big prize, and Leonor Jimeno Herrera the infant crown. They were joined on the parade floats by all the other candidates.

The Family Day carnival on Saturday was bursting with live chart music, from noon, featuring 15 groups.

It had attracted concern over the volume of alcohol being drunk by minors in the past, so extra policing and a small on-site medical point were added this year. But just 15 people needed attention, seven of them female. Down at the seafront, small musical parades weaved through

the streets, and the fancydress competition wowed passers-by.

The bustle of sequins and feathers for the Coso parade on Sunday ensured that the best vantage points began to fill up from lunch-time.

Many of the Carnival’s evergreen favourites, from cartoons and films, joined in,

and a slightly-cooler feel to the afternoon was a blessing to those in bulky costumes.

The entire event came to a wild end on Monday night, as wailing widows followed the giant sardine through Los Cristianos to the beach, where it was burned, amid a shower of fireworks.

This year proved to be a

spectacular success, so take a bow all those who poured in so much effort.

And a special thank-you to the Arona street-cleaners, who tackled a mountain of rubbish after each late, crazy night, yet had the centre of Los Cristianos all shipshape the next morning.

A concerned neighbour reported that an “aggressive individual” was making a commotion in his Costa del Sol apartment.

And when the cops visited the address, in the Miraflores de Los Angeles neighbourhood of Malaga City, the culprit reportedly screamed, “I am going to kill you all”, sparking a call for backup.

Once the area was secure, a senior officer phoned the unnamed 35-year-old and convinced him to step outside.

He told them he was “fine”, but said NASA had hacked his computer and were watching him, through a modified lamp-post, outside his home.

An ambulance was called, amid concerns over his mental health.

While awaiting the medics, the man revealed that he had bought a number of weapons, including a hand-gun, crossbow, air-rifle, arrows and bullets, to protect himself against potential attacks.

He was transferred to the Civil Hospital, and police confiscated the weapons.

Baby black swan’s already so special LORO Parque is celebrating another new arrival, in the shape of a baby black swan, born on the park’s Lake Thai.

It means that the family of black swans, or Cygnus atratus, has been extended.

That’s not surprising, because these majestic birds have recently laid several eggs, which are the centre of attention for park keepers.

The new chick is perfectly healthy and enjoys everybody’s special attention and affection. The park’s visitors may have already seen him swimming with his family in the beautiful lake, which is home to many species of birds, as well as a variety of vegetation.

And special attention is paid to a group of brightlycoloured Koi carp, which come into direct contact with the swans.

The black swan is a species which usually breeds during the rainy season, and this time was no different.

Snakes alive! Illegal-reptile gang had protected species

POLICE have questioning 17 people in Spain after wild reptiles, worth more than 150,000 euros, were seized in the Netherlands.

Three Spanish men were held at Amsterdam’s Schipol Airport as they waited to board a Madrid flight.

They were carrying a total of 200 Mexican snakes, lizards, and turtles, including many protected species, in their luggage.

A probe revealed that the trio were members of a dedicated, wildlifetrafficking ring. This led to police swooping on homes and

warehouses in Madrid and Castellon, unearthing a further 600 reptiles.

Many of them were legal species, with licences issued to those concerned, enabling them to sell the wildlife on.

Nine suspects were remanded in custody and eight others were questioned in connection with the plot, which, reportedly, saw wildlife from America, Asia, Africa and Oceania smuggled to Spain illegally for the black-market pet trade.

Most of the species involved, endangered in

the wild, were wanted by private collectors, who would pay as much as 50,000 euros for a single reptile.

The gang, who had a network of contacts around the world, used drug-traffickingstyle mules to bring the animals to Europe, although some were traded “legally”, via forged documentation.

The investigation and conclusion came after the Spanish Government unveiled a series of measures last month, designed to crack down on the illegal wildlife trade in a new “national plan of action”.

Breeding is a natural animal behaviour, which occurs when all their needs and necessities are fulfilled properly. And this new addition confirms the excellent well-being of these Loro Parque birds.

THE repercussions of Storm Emma, which passed through the archipelago over two weeks ago, have left some parts of Santa Cruz looking rather like a war zone.

Some 43 trees were believed to be damaged, or uprooted. And among the latter was an Indian laurel tree, on the Carretera General del Sur. A local councillor said: “Ten days have passed since the tree was uprooted, and it has just been left.”

The only difference noticed by the locals is a blue-and-white police tape, placed by the Local Police when the tree fell to the ground.

The tape has been wrapped around the tree and nearby lamp-posts, to try to prevent the public from getting too close.

Residents don’t understand why the tree has not been moved, especially because of its position.

Gearing up for Easter ADEJE Council launches its Easter programme tomorrow (Saturday), with addresses by the Rev Ismael Martín and the Fedola Group’s Director General, Maria Victoria López.

GARACHICO, in the North of Tenerife, experienced extremely forceful waves along the coast on Sunday.

They were so strong that they actually shifted cars parked on the TF-42 main road, which runs in and out of the town.

The road, which had been closed to traffic the previous week for the same reason, was partly closed as a safety precaution, because of the reported incidents.

Many residents from Garachico town captured the phenomena on camera because the sight was astonishing.

Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga said: “We are changing the presentation somewhat, and asking two individuals with very distinct and different social roles, one traditional and one business-based, reflecting both sides of our community.

“So this year, Fr Ismael will represent our traditions, and Ms Lopez our international tourism side.”

Adeje’s municipal patron band will also perform at the event, which marks the official presentation of the borough’s Easter programme, which has some new additions this year.

The event will also mark the opening of a special exhibition of photographs, detailing the “devotion and history of Easter Week in Adeje”.

Today (Friday), a new

statue, “María Santísima del Consuelo”, a work by Francisco Zafra. will be introduced into the Adeje religious “family”.

The statue will be blessed and brought in procession along the Calle Castillo to the Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza hermitage on Monday, 26th March.

Adeje’s Mayor added: “Easter Week in Adeje is now recognised, nationally and internationally, as an important event, both for

the artistic and historic relevance reflected in the different processions, and for the Good Friday street theatre, ‘La Pasión’.

“This year we are also adding new elements, to underline the importance of the celebrations.”

Like last year, the Council has organised a gastronomy event linked to Easter Week, the Lenten Tapas Route.

Many bars and restaurants have already signed up to take part, most of them

located along the route of the town’s most popular Easter procession.

There are also prizes for the public, who can enter by having the special leaflet, available in participating establishments, stamped.

And, once completed (with four stamps), it must be posted in the special boxes in the Cultural Centre, the Youth Centre or Costa Adeje’s Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA). The competition closes on 1st April.

Costa Adeje tragedy as pensioners drown

Tree surgeon suffers heart-attack at work A TREE surgeon, who suffered a heart attack while working up a palm tree, had to be rescued by fire-fighters from Icod de Los Vinos on Wednesday.

TWO male pensioners were drowned in separate incidents, within hours of each other, in the Costa Adeje region on Monday.

A 79-year-old Briton died at about 1.30pm after he’d gone for a swim in his hotel pool, in Calle Londres.

An ambulance was dispatched, following an emergency call, when he stopped breathing, after getting into trouble and being rescued.

When the medics arrived,

they soon assessed the situation and began CPR immediately, because his heart had already stopped.

But it was too little, too late for him.

About 5½ hours later, in Playa Fanabe, a German aged 70, met the same fate, after being rescued from the sea. Tragically, his heart had already stopped beating.

The Canarian Emergency Services were alerted when a call was received at 6.37pm, requesting an ambulance, and a helicopter, in the hope of getting him to hospital rapidly. But to no avail.

An emergency call had been made, requesting the assistance of firefighters because there was a man in a tree who wasn’t moving.

They were dispatched immediately to Calle Araucaria, in El Mayorazgo, in the Icod municipality.

They realised that the man had suffered a heart attack, six metres high, in the middle of a Palm

tree, while doing his job.

Firemen were able to transfer the man safely

to the ground, where the ambulance was waiting to take him to hospital.

Teenager’s Parkour fall

A TEENAGE boy was seriously injured while practising his sport of Parkour in Arafo, where he lives.

A call was made to the emergency services last Wednesday at around 7pm, requesting assistance because a boy had fallen from a sun-roof in the area.

The fire services were at the scene to assist, and the youngster was later transferred to Candaleria Hospital for treatment.

Parkour is a physical, urban sport, which is growing in popularity. It involves moving efficiently around the environment, in any way possible, using your body, as well as taking advantage of steps, walls, ramps and street furniture.

Murder suspect could face rare life sentence A MAN accused of murder on the Costa del Sol is facing only the second life sentence issued in Spain over the last four decades, if he’s found guilty.

Prosecutors say that Irishman James Quinn donned a balaclava before lying in wait for compatriot Gary Hutch in the car park of a gated, housing estate near Fuengirola.

He then chased 34-yearold Hutch on foot, before gunning him down and shooting him twice in the head after he had fallen.

The brutal hit triggered a feud between rival crime families, which has claimed 14 lives in Ireland and Spain to date.

Dubliner Quinn insists he has been identified wrongly as the Calahonda assassin on 24th September 2015.

But an eight-page indictment against him alleges that he carried out the killing on the orders of an “un-

known person”, after being dropped off at the victim’s home in a car, stolen from Mijas.

The indictment reads: “He was armed with a 9mm Glock 26 semi-automatic pistol, whose serial number had been erased, and a .45 semi-automatic Colt 1911 pistol.

“When Gary approached his vehicle moments later, the accused began to shoot at him in a surprise attack.

“Initially the victim was able to flee towards the inside of the estate, but the accused chased him and fired more than 15 shots.

“Finally, the accused caught up with him when Gary was

on the ground, virtually motionless because of the bullets he had been hit with.

“Giving him almost no chance of defending himself, he shot him twice in the head from close range and killed him instantly.

“He subsequently fled in the aforementioned vehicle, which was waiting

for him outside the gated complex ,and tried to burn it afterwards to erase any trace of his criminal action.”

It is also claimed that Quinn enjoyed “a high standard of living in Spain, revolving around luxury homes, highend cars and numerous trips abroad, to places like Dubai and Thailand.

“He even managed to acquire a boat valued at more than 100,000 euros, despite having no known job or means of sustenance.”

The then 30-year-old was held at his Benahavis home a year after the shooting, with police describing him as a “drugs and weapons trafficker”.

Quinn has been charged with murder, and possession of illegal weapons, and prosecutors have demanded he pay the victim’s family 90,000 euros if found guilty.

Only one person is currently serving a life sentence in a Spanish prison, because the maximum possible sentence was 40 years, until a reform was passed in 2015.

Cops switch off illegal TV gang

SPAIN’S National Police, supported by Europol, have busted a crime ring providing illegal access to TV channels.

Together, they arrested six individuals from a crime ring suspected of selling illegal TV signals from more than 14,000 international points of sale.

The signals were sold through a company, which designed the application needed to stream films, television series and sport events illegally.

During the investigation, police officers discovered a non-registered company, based in Galicia, Spain, suspected of transmitting signals for paid TV channels.

The company, illegally, developed both the decoder device and the application needed to access the paid channels.

Decoders were sold for 120 euros each, and the server to transmit the illegal

signal, hosted in France, was controlled from the Spanish business.

In all, eight house searches were carried out in Spain, leading to the arrest of six members of the organised crime group, and the seizure of 4,600 IT devices.

During the raids, Europol supported the investigation on the ground by deploying an analyst, and a specialist to Spain, equipped with a mobile office and a dataextraction device.

This made possible the realtime information exchange, as well as cross-checks of the data, gathered during the course of the action against Europol’s databases.

The investigation began when EGEDA ((Entidad de Gestión de Derechos de los Productores Audiovisuales), together with the Spanish multi-media communications group Mediapro and the Spanish Football League, filed a complaint with the police.

British rapist held in Spain SPANISH police have arrested a wanted Briton, convicted of five rapes in the UK, who was found living in a van and using a fake identity.

The man, as yet un-named, who was convicted of five rapes on two victims in the

1980s, including one on a 15-year-old girl, is facing a life sentence.

British authorities issued a European Arrest Warrant in 2016, and, last July, police officers in Spain were tipped off that he was living somewhere on the country’s eastern coast.

Spanish police said the man was arrested in Alicante, on the Costa Blanca, after

ISIS calls for more attacks on Spanish

ISIS has called on its followers to carry out attacks in Spain, with propaganda group Muharir alAnsar sharing an poster (pictured) online with the terrorist group, telling followers to carry out jihad.

The image shows the Sagrada Familia (Sacred Family) in Barcelona, and says that those without

weapons should use a vehicle or knife. It reads: “If you do not have a weapon, you have a truck or knife.”

In a chilling campaign, the message comes just seven months after the shocking Barcelona attacks, in which 16 people were murdered, and more than 150 injured.

According to the intelligence community, it is “likely”, since the attacks, that the twisted terror group has begun a recruiting campaign in Spain, because it was the most-recent, high-profile assault in Western Europe.

Oliver Wiltshire, Regional Director of Intelligence at MAX Security Solutions, told The Sun Online: “This message stands as proof of the continuing power of the Islamic State ideology among radicals in Europe, and the group’s popularity in Spain, despite losses in previous areas of operation.

“There appears to be an imminent threat of lonewolf attacks, coming from locally-radicalised individuals in the country, and, particularly, in Barcelona.”

I’m no druggie, insists irate school bus driver

A SCHOOL bus driver not only denies taking cocaine and heroin, but insists he has never taken drugs. Yet a random test on him showed up positive for the two drugs.

The 32-year-old was arrested during a new drug-driving campaign in Llucmajor, Mallorca’s largest municipality, which is testing bus drivers randomly, and monitoring vehicle conditions.

“The machine does not work,” he insisted.

“I have never taken drugs. I was left speechless, and all

I can say is that it’s impossible.”

He added: “I have never taken drugs and I have not smoked for more than 10 years.”

The driver was so incensed that he actually paid for his own private drug test, which was negative, to prove his innocence, after returning to the police station the next day.

“I understand parents do not want their children to be driven by a drug-addict.

But the proof that I have not taken anything is here, in this test,” he stressed.

“Machines and people have made mistakes, and this is clearly one of those.”

He is now fighting a 1,000-euro fine and

six-point deduction off his licence.

British television presenter Angela Rippon tested positive for opiates after eating poppy seeds in a loaf of bread for an experiment for the food series Rip Off Britain.

The test picked up the presence of morphine, derived from opium, after she ate a loaf of poppy-seed bread and a poppy-seed bagel over the course of three days.

The experiment came about after a man called the programme saying he had been fired from his job at a power station, after a routine drug test showed opiates in his system, despite him never taking drugs.

Barcelona tops the cocaine list BARCELONA is the cocaine capital of Europe, according to an analysis of waste-water in 56 European cities.

On average, for every 1,000 residents, Barcelonians get through 965.2mg each day, which is the highest weight recorded since the project started.

It represents a 34% increase on the inaugural result, found in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2011.

Just one British city made it into the top 10, with Bristol coming in at sixth, but London, previously deemed as the capital in 2014 and 2015, did not feature this year.

Zurich in Switzerland came second with 934.4mg daily per 1,000, and, following the trend, became the second-highest figure ever recorded.

This comes after a separate EU drugs report found that more than 13% of Spaniards, between the ages of 15 and 34, have tried cocaine at least once. But with the EU

average of 6.3%, Spain has the highest in Europe.

Spain’s youth are also Europe’s most habitual coke-snorters, with 4.4% admitting they have consumed the drug in the last year, and 2% in the last month.

In addition to cocaine, Barcelona ranked 7th in Europe for using MDMA, known commonly as Ecstasy.

Driver had a car-load of drugs and property GUARDIA Civil officers, who arrested a nervouslooking man for, allegedly, stealing a car in Gran Canaria, discovered a wealth of brand-new items inside.

Their search revealed various items, including bundles of new clothes, all with the labels intact, as well as a bike, a computer, three tablets and seven mobile telephones.

The entire haul related to several robberies, which had been reported from homes and businesses in

the Calle Colon area of the island, where he was stopped.

As well as these discoveries, the officers also came across 149gms of hashish, and a bottle of poppers.

They then discovered that the 38-year-old already had two criminal records on file, for drug-trafficking and robbery.

Because of the quantity of all the unexplained items, and the volume of drugs, the man was detained for identical offences.

Blazing bus is doused swiftly FIRE-FIGHTERS at Las Palmas were called out on Sunday afternoon, when a bus went up in flames on the roundabout, in the El Lomo Blanco area.

It was put out of action for about an hour, while the firemen got to grips with the blaze.

Fortunately, there were no casualties, because the bus was empty, although severe damage was caused to its rear end.

‘Kebab’ gang skewered!

A VAST international money-laundering operation, based on the Costa Blanca and in Barcelona, has led to five arrests and 15 people charged, following an investigation by the Guardia Civil.

The criminal organisation, operating in Germany and Spain, used a network of food establishments to conceal their activities, fronting as kebab meat suppliers.

Guardia Civil officers began their probe in the summer of 2015, when police agents from the Barcelona-El Prat airport discovered that a huge sum of money was being sent from Spain to Germany on a weekly basis.

Gang members were transferring between 90,000 and 300,000 euros between the two countries. They told the airport authorities that the transfers were payments

by Spanish companies to a German firm, for their supply of meat for kebabs.

But the investigation revealed that the Spanish companies were not even involved in genuine, commercial activities.

Police discovered that the

gang, operating since 2012, had built up a network of companies involving money-laundering to front them.

Spanish authorities estimate that around 36 million euros has been transferred and laundered by the criminal network.

Europol has supported the probe since 2017 by providing analytical and operational support, carrying out data analysis and crossmatch reporting.

As a result, the Guardia Civil, who have blocked 36 bank accounts and 35 credit cards, have also seized five properties in the Alicante province, worth around 470,000 euros.

Simon Riondet, Europol’s Head of Financial Intelligence, said: “This investigation again shows that criminal business is still, largely, done in cash.

“Professional money-laun-

dering syndicates offer cash-courier and compensation-laundering services for illicit proceeds.

“Very often, networks of front and shell companies are established to facilitate the movement of the money, and to provide justification for the proceeds.”

He added: “These activities are further enabled by the lack of cash-payment restrictions in some EU countries, which allow justifying large cash amounts as payments for trade activities.

“The continued law-enforcement seizures of large denomination banknotes, and the prevailing, tradebased money-laundering schemes, reinforce the need to discontinue the production and circulation of 500 and 200-euro banknotes, and set an EU-wide framework for restricting or setting a common limit, for cash payments.”

GBP/USD recovers ground on Trump trade anxieties

BREXIT jitters have continued to dominate the outlook for the pound, as the next round of formal negotiations draws nearer, especially as concerns over the global trade outlook have picked up.

Lingering uncertainties over the future of the UK economy have seen GBP/ EUR slip from 1.1395 to 1.1154, even though the pairing has started to recover some of its ground.

Similarly, GBP/USD has come under pressure, although ongoing market worries over the Trump administration’s approach to trade have limited the downside bias.

Although February’s UK services PMI strongly bettered forecast, the pound struggled to capitalise on this stronger showing for long. In large part, this was due to the

somewhat negative market reaction to Theresa May’s much-anticipated Brexit speech, which ultimately offered less in the way of details than investors had hoped.

This left GBP exchange rates on a generally weaker footing, with little over a year now left until the exit deadline of March 2019. As the EU Commission published its own draft proposals for the shape of the post-Brexit relationship, this failed to encourage any particular

Deep-sea fish could spread plastic fear

NEARLY 75% of deep-sea fish have ingested microplastics, a new study has revealed, and they, in turn, could affect other, predatory fish.

Of 233 mesopelagic fish (oceanic species living at depths of between 2001,000m, called the twilight zone) caught in the Northwest Atlantic, 73% were found to have plastic particles in their stomachs, “making it one of the highest-reported frequencies of microplastic occurrence in fish worldwide”.

Researchers from the National University of Ireland, in Galway, examined dead deep-sea fish, caught in midwater trawls, from a depth of up to 600m.

One spotted a lanternfish, measuring 4.5cm long,

which had 13 plastic particles in its stomach.

The findings have been described as “worrying”, because fish could pass the microplastics throughout the ocean, when the affected fish are eaten by predators.

These fish are prey for fish eaten by humans, which means we could, indirectly, be eating food which has been contaminated.

Microplastics are small plastic fragments, broken down, commonly, from larger plastic items, which have been dumped into the ocean.

Other sources include waste-water effluents, carrying plastic fibres from clothing, caused by washing synthetic clothes in washing machines, and microbeads, found in cosmetic products.

All in all, the UK and EU still look to be largely at odds over a number of key issues, including the Irish border, which suggests that negotiations are unlikely to get any easier in the near future.

A solid rallying point could be in store for the pound next week, providing that February’s UK consumer price index data betters forecast. If inflation is found to have picked up further on the year, rising above 3%, this would increase the pressure on the Bank of England (BoE) to raise interest rates again in the near future.

On the other hand, any

softening in price pressures may see GBP exchange rates trending lower, as the prospect of a May rate hike diminishes.

Markets are largely confident that the Federal Reserve will opt for a rate hike at its March meeting, meanwhile. Although an imminent increase in interest rates is already effectively priced into the US Dollar, this hawkish outlook should still limit its downside potential. As long as the Eurozone continues to demonstrate signs of robust growth, the appeal of the euro is likely to remain somewhat heightened.

Government eager to raise age of marriage SPAIN’S Government wants to increase the minimum marriage age from 16 to 18, after learning that over 800 minors became husbands or wives between 2013 and 2016.

The reigning right-wing PP minority party has asked the mainly-left-wing opposition to support its proposal, in line with recommendations by the United Nations and other international organisations, working for the protection of women and children.

In Britain, as in many other western countries, a 16-year-old can, legally, take the major decision to get married. Yet he or she cannot even vote in local or general elections.

And in Spain, youngsters aged 16-17 are considered

“children” in every sense, although, technically, they are deemed to be adults in other EU countries, where they would be taken into care if found unaccompanied.

Although the minimum age for sexual consent in Spain is 16, a girl of around that age, or slightly older, who becomes pregnant, would normally spark an inquiry into her family situation.

The PP stresses that it does not want to “limit rights” of teenagers, aged 16 and 17. It seeks to “guarantee their full development as adults” before they “take actions that could, potentially, change their present and future completely”.

The ruling party’s aim is to “protect minors above and beyond anyone else” in situations where a “power imbalance” may be present.

Amendments in 2015 to its childhood and

adolescence protection system made Spain the first country ever to make minors’ interests a priority, and provided them with substantial rights and procedures, to be followed if these were breached.

In the last year, the age of consent for sexual relations has been lifted to 16 from 13, and forced marriage has been categorised as a criminal offence, whatever the victim’s age.

One in three girls in developing countries is under 18 when she marries, and even in Spain, 807 children were wed over the four years until the end of 2016.

The PP argues that if a person has to be 18 or more to vote, learn to drive or actually drive a car, drink alcohol, smoke or buy cigarettes, he or she should also be at least that age before being able to get married legally.

In this first episode, the pilgrims face one of the most gruelling parts of the Camino de Santiago route - a 26km hike from France into Spain. It sorts the seasoned walkers like Ed and JJ from the strollers, such as Neil, who soon realises he might not be prepared for the task ahead. As a former Catholic, and now atheist, Neil soon discovers that the arduous experience is not bringing him any closer to God. Meanwhile, Kate’s faith takes a knock as she struggles to keep up with the group, while Raphael refuses to be swayed by anything religious - in prison he clung to hope, not God, after serving time for a crime he did not commit. For Debbie, she finds solace in a fellow traveller after opening up about the loss of her husband.

As they move along the route through vast mountain ranges and stunning landscapes in France and Spain, the group explores their differing religious beliefs, bond over the physical task and find humour when they realise what living like a simple pilgrim entails.

With an imminent arrival from her Aunt (Barbara Flynn), Lou Hermione will be able to help set her children back on the straight and narrow.

Larry is furious over the reception of his last novel and Margo is bored out of her mind s soap sculpting as a hobby, whilst Gerry is trying his best to keep his animal family grow mother’s best efforts. However, it’s Leslie who Louisa is desperately worried about when that he is seeing three different girls… at the same time.

Concerned that Leslie will get hurt, Louisa takes it upon herself to help him decide who by visiting each of the girls. Marcella

Monday 19th March, ITV1, 21.00

Kevin Hoffs and his blue lorry are found abandoned in a lay by. Leann informs Marcella that the lorry had been there for 36 hours.

After analysing Adam’s phone records, the team become aware that Adam had contacted the KidsCall helpline. Marcella heads there to retrieve the records and Maya is helpful despite both women having Tim Williamson in common. From Adam’s records they see that he’d admitted to being abused by his father but his father has alibis for many incidents surrounding the case.

Retracing the route of the lorry and the car from the train crash, the team are able to deduce the area in which Adam was picked up and the lorry was stolen. Officers are dispatched to the area and come across an old abandoned house with a bloody handprint on the door.

What they find inside the house shocks Marcella and Rav to their core as the true scale of the killer’s crimes become apparent.

Marcella spots a neighbouring house and heads to talk to the occupier, Nigel Stafford.

But Nigel is intent on not helping the police.

The team get an ID on one of the other victims and head to see the person the victim was last seen with, Vince Whitman. Meanwhile another child’s disappearance links back to the businessman but it appears that Eric is also involved.

In a hypnosis session, Marcella regresses to the moment where she found Grace Gibson’s body and her actions afterwards shock her.

Two teenage boys recognise that they’ve filmed one of their ‘haunted’ ghost videos in the abandoned house. In an attempt to get rich quick, they sell their video to the internet media company, Postfeed24.

Edward’s descent takes another dark turn and causes damage in his relationship with Samantha.

Meanwhile Jojo’s desperation to have a child becomes apparent as she records a video diary for the unborn baby, as Sascha enacts Maya’s plan.

Reg tells Alan that he wants to come clean to the police. Despite Reg’s plea that he’ll only implicate himself and Alan is worried.

Big Cats About The House Thursday 22 March, BBC2, 20.00

Big cat expert Giles Clark returns to the UK to embark on his biggest undertaking yet: running the Big Cat Sanctuary in Kent, which he hopes to build it into a centre of global excellence conservation, in this three-part observational documentary series for BBC Two. In episode one Giles steps in to help Maya, a weak and vulnerable five dayold black jaguar cub who has been neglected by her mother. Taking her home, Giles provides her with care around the clock. We get to know Maya, witness her developmental milestones and her growing relationship with Giles, his fiancée Kathryn and daughter Sam. At the sanctuary Giles has his hands full improving the lives of the 50 cats who live there, and working towards them becoming ambassadors for their wild cousins.

To experience the plight of big cats in the wild first hand Giles travels to Cambodia, where he sees the terrible problems that clouded leopards are facing. The trip fuels Giles’s determination to want to raise awareness and provide much needed help. Back at the centre Giles and his team plan their annual open days to help raise funds.

Back at home Maya is growing well and has started to move around the house - but suddenly her health deteriorates and she develops eyesight and mobility issues. She is rushed to a high-end veterinary hospital where, at only five weeks old, her life hangs in the balance.

England will be out for revenge against Ireland as the two sides meet at Twickenham in what will be a crucial game in the outcome of this year’s Six Nations Championship.

Ireland denied England a Grand Slam last March in a 13-9 victory in Dublin and have looked the team to beat so far this year. Lions stars Johnny Sexton and Conor Murray have been in imperious form for the Irish, but Eddie Jones’ side will be eager to prove the doubters wrong after their painful defeat to Scotland, and in Owen Farrell and fit again Elliot Daly they have match-winners of their own. The Good Karma Hospital series two returns to tropical South India as the formidable Dr Lydia Fonseca and her team face new challenges. It’s a year since Ruby Walker first arrived in Kerala, looking for a job and a distraction from her heartbreak. Ruby is now settled in India, and Lydia feels it’s time for her apprentice to step up and take on more responsibility.

Series two will see Ruby deepen her understanding of India, her new home.

An outreach clinic to a tea plantation will allow Ruby to make surprising connections to her Indian family and to understand where she’s from and where it is that she belongs.

Ruby will also move closer to Dr Gabriel Varma. Their sparky working relationship becoming something more. But as they navigate their changing feelings for each other, Ruby must decide if she’s ready for a new romance.

Lydia’s relationship with Greg hits a rocky patch when Greg jokingly mentions marriage and Lydia’s reaction suggests they might not be in the same place. It leaves them wondering what the future holds for them.

Series Two of THE GOOD KARMA HOSPITAL will see our team’s dedication, skills, resourcefulness and their professional and personal relationships put to the test. They will only get through these challenges by coming together to work as a team. Lydia, Ruby, and the rest of the Good Karma crew will come to understand that, through good times and bad, they can always rely on each other.

As Shetland reaches its thrilling conclusion, the personal and the professional collide for Perez, as he finally closes in on the truth. Troubled by historical DNA evidence results, Perez has to face the fact that Duncan may have been involved in Lizzie Kilmuir’s murder and potentially Sally McColl’s as well.

A shocked Duncan is brought to the station for questioning, hurt that Perez would even think him capable of murder. However, Perez knows Duncan’s lying - perhaps not about the murder, but about something else significant.

Cassie seeks reassurance from Perez that Duncan isn’t a double murderer, something he’s unable to give his step-daughter.

As things look increasingly bleak for Duncan, an old photo on Sally McColl’s memory stick sheds new light on the investigation and puts another suspect firmly in the frame for Lizzie’s murder.

However, just as Perez begins to close in on the truth, he gets a call from McCabe at the police station. Malone has been seen out walking on the High Street, armed with a shotgun, seemingly hell-bent on revenge and justice.

Mary Beard broaches the controversial, sometimes dangerous, topic of religion and art.

For millennia, art has inspired religion as much as religion has inspired art. Yet there are fundamental problems, which all religions share, in making God or gods visible in the human world. How, and at what cost, do you make the unseen, seen?

Beneath all works of religious art there always lies conflict and risk. And the result is often iconoclasm - the destruction of works of art - which Mary believes can, paradoxically, lead on to new forms of creativity.

Mary Beard visits sacred sites across the world to examine the contested boundaries between religion and art. She goes to the temple of Angkor Wat, the Tintoretto Crucifixion in Venice, Buddhist caves of Anjanta and the Blue Mosque in Istanbul, as she seeks to break down the conventions that depict some religions as image-based and others as hostile to artistic representation. She shows how all faiths (and their artists) face the same fundamental problems of treading a careful line between glorifying God in images and blasphemy by daring to represent the divine.

K9 Animal News LAST week, RJ and Linda got the opportunity of a lifetime, travelling to the UK to live with their new families!

It was a complicated goodbye for staff and volunteers at the refuge, as they would miss them very much. But they were very happy to see them finally living the lives they deserved!

It was a long journey, but they finally reached their destinations. Linda arrived with her new family who she had already met as volunteers at K9. RJ was lucky enough to be reunited with his sister Ruby, who was homed a year earlier.

The reunion was amazing, and we are sure they both remembered each other.

Both Linda and RJ had an action-packed first day, exploring their new surroundings, and finding the perfect place to unwind.

We can see that they are both extremely happy.

Linda got to play in the snow, something she had never encountered before, and RJ ran around the hills of Wales with Ruby. Their new families tell us they are both good as gold, and they are extremely happy

St Patrick’s Day services

AN English-spoken Mass will be held at the Church in Los Cristianos Square tomorrow (Saturday), at 11.30am, in honour of St Patrick.

All are welcome, and everyone is invited for light refreshments in the crypt, afterwards.

There will also be a 10am English service at San Blas Church, which will attract many Irish folk among others, who attend Sunday services there regularly.

A St Patrick’s Day midday Mass will be celebrated in the Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Church, in Las Americas, also in English.

This included the bedspreads, curtains, and, quite often, a set of toning plastic flowers, as well. Apologies to anyone who still has these items still in their property!

Of course, now things are completely different, and less is definitely considered more; more stylish, more appealing and less busy! Quite often, the bedroom curtains will have to fit a patio door. They make a big

impression on your overall design scheme, so it’s important to get them right.

Whether you are going for curtains, eyelet or gathered, or roller or vertical blinds, having them made to fit the window properly will ensure that they look the part, and do the job you need them for.

Buying ready-made window dressings may be cheaper, but they will never look good, in the same way.

If you prefer curtains

to blinds, you can choose the eyelet variety, where the curtain pole slots through rings sewn into the curtains.

This method uses less material because the curtains aren’t gathered, but the making of them is more expensive and needs to be finished perfectly, so there often isn’t much difference between them and gathered drapes.

Gathered curtains run on rings over a curtain pole, or on a track with small hooks.

They use more material, and give a more gathered and fussy look, but are cheaper to make.

Nets, or voiles as they are now called, introduce a lovely, colonial element to your decorating scheme, but they won’t keep the sun out or give you any privacy at night, so might need to be paired with blinds, or additional curtains.

Sunblock curtains are another tool that you might find useful, to keep the bedroom cool

on hot days, or make it dark on those long, summer evenings.

Fortunately, times have moved on from plastic sun-curtains (although they did a good job), and you can now get fabric, with a layer in the middle, to provide the necessary blocking qualities, but in a wide range of colours.

To give a good impression, your window dressings should be fitted half-way between the top of the window and the ceiling, and have enough overlap at the sides to keep the light out.

This arrangement is easy on the eye, and looks in proportion. This is when you will really be able to see whether you have chosen made-tomeasure curtains, or made do with readymade!

It’s food for thought

MANY of us have heard about the vegan diet, and have all sorts of misconceptions about what it entails.

We imagine that the food would be tasteless and boring, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. And when Demi Thompson, founder of The Vegan Project,

realised he wasn’t as healthy as he could have been, he decided

to do something about it, and became a vegan himself.

Veganism is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes meat, seafood, eggs and dairy products, and all other animal-derived ingredients. After making drastic changes to his way of eating, Demi wanted to share the vegan experience with others.

“My idea of starting the project be-

gan with wanting to cleanse my body,” said Demi. “Over the years, through things I have seen and read,

I knew that the meat we eat is full of unnatural hormones and chemicals, not to mention how the ani-

mals are treated, and killed, in the modernday meat industry.”

The project began on 10th March, and will last for 30 days. Seven people are taking part, and the menus are full of variety. For 300 euros a month, three meals and a snack are included, each day.

With dishes such as chocolate and almond semolina porridge, Kentucky tofu wrap, broccoli and basil pesto pasta, and curried chickpeas, the food is sure to tickle the taste buds.

He added: “The problem I’ve always had, however, is finding the time to make healthy food at home. Creating dishes which are exciting to eat is quite timeconsuming.

“I’m aware that, in order to achieve a goal, I need some sort of motivation, otherwise I go off the rails. That is why I decided to hire two chefs from the Kaluna Beach Club to do the cooking during the project, eliminating the timeconsuming element of it.

“On the motivational side, I know, from experience, that one of the best ways of sticking to something is to undertake it as a group. I started telling a few people about my plan, and I soon had many of them wanting to sign up. The aim of the project is to show people that there are so many meals that are delicious - and vegan.”

A doctor has been enlisted, whose role will be to explain how the body works.

He’ll inform the participants regarding what could make them ill, and what natural medicines and life-style habits can improve their health.

They have the option of meeting with him once a week, to discuss any issues that may arise.

Vegas Grill, Las Americas

Culinary heaven!

By Jenny T IN the heart of the swanky end of Las Americas you will find the Vegas Grill, a stunning, new restaurant which only opened its doors at the end of October.

Even though it is early days, we had already heard great things from friends and colleagues about the fantastic food, service and overall experience. When Adam, my other half, and I were offered the chance to go and try it out for ourselves, we jumped at it!

The entrance is opposite the Parque la Paz strip, complete with red carpet, to really give you that showbiz welcome.

All that was missing were the paparazzi! We still felt as though we were about to enter a glamorous, awards ceremony, and I was glad I had slapped on some face and done my hair!

We were led up the red carpeted stairs and into the restaurant, and were both amazed to see the size of the place, which has a floor space of over 1500m². With such a big venue, it would

have been easy, without the right attention to detail, for it to feel as though we were dining in a canteen-style environment.

However, the décor, lighting, music and open plan somehow made the vast space seem cosy and intimate, with a tranquil atmosphere.

Having so much space meant that there was plenty of room between tables. It is a pet hate of mine to feel crammed in, having to move my chair in and out all the time, to let people pass.

This was not an issue at the Vegas Grill!

I was happy to see the kitchen in full view, but it wasn’t a focal point. I had a nosey, and saw that it was impeccably clean, which is always a good start. We were seated, and immediately offered drinks.

There was an impressive wine list, but, being eight months’ pregnant, I opted for a soft drink. My fiancé was impressed by the range

of different, draught beers, including Fosters, which, apparently, is a great find and a welcome change.

A fantastic touch was a waitress approaching each

table at the start of the evening, to explain the specials on offer. Instead of a chalk-board, or even a typed-up, laminated handout, we experienced the

detailed descriptions from a knowledgeable member of staff, who had a tablet showing mouth-watering pictures of each dish she was describing. Welcome to 2018!

The menu was a good size; not too overwhelming, but with plenty to choose from, and exactly what you would expect from a restaurant named Vegas Grill. There was a good range of starters, including a variety of breads, Thai Salmon fishcakes, mussels and even a Spanish tapas selection for two. We eventually opted for the Cheddar and Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms and the Pil Pil Prawns.

The mushrooms were served on a Hollandaise sauce, which complemented the flavour of the cheese and bacon perfectly. The prawns were juicy and succulent, and served in a sizzlinghot, garlic oil. Both were presented beautifully and exceeded our expectations, tantalising our taste buds.

There was just enough garlic not to be too overpowering, and, although I was disappointed when they were gone, they weren’t overfilling; it’s always good for a starter to leave you wanting more. Bring on the mains!

Once again, the variety left me pondering about what to choose, with a range of steaks and every imaginable sauce or topping, as well as fajitas, seafood and even lobster. I was tempted to just close my eyes and pick one. I had seen another table with the Chicken Sate, and it looked (and smelt) delicious, but then I fancied something different.

I went for the baconwrapped pork medallions, while my partner chose a grilled, fillet steak with a King Prawn on top to make it extra special, as recommended by our waiter, Kader. Once again, the presentation was lovely; there is something quirky and tasteful about being served your meal on a chopping board.

Although I had ordered a

mushroom sauce with the pork medallions, it didn’t really need it because, even without, the flavours were outstanding.

The fillet steak was cooked to perfection, and the fried, garlic potatoes were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Just what you need from a potato dish!

The vegetables were super fresh and tasty, adding a nice touch of colour to both meals. I always feel I haven’t been too naughty if I eat my vegetables, and can surely, therefore, have a dessert.

While we contemplated

asking for a dessert menu, a larger-than-life ball of fun named Jose appeared at our table, to perform closeup, table magic. He was friendly, funny and happy, and had an infectious smile that we immediately warmed to.

We learned he had once been a waiter in the sister restaurant to this one. The management recognised his ability to perform magic, and he interacted so well with the customers, making the dining experience quite unique.

Once our minds had been

blown away by Jose’s magical talents, a member of staff came to our table with a dessert trolley.

Having them displayed in front of you made it difficult to refuse, and it wasn’t a case of should we, or shouldn’t we? Rather, which one shall we choose? We were going to be good and share, but changed our minds once we saw what was on offer; chocolate cake, a variety of cheese cakes and a dime cake, all accompanied by a selection of 12, different ice creams.

caramel cheesecake to satisfy my sweet tooth, and it didn’t disappoint. I also had a nibble of the dime cake that Adam had selected – wow! What a delicioustasting extravaganza of dessert heaven!

Overall, our trip to the Vegas Grill exceeded our expectations, and the knowledgeable and friendly servers made our visit completely enjoyable. The venue was impressive, and the subtle entertainment definitely enhanced our whole, dining experience.

We will definitely be back!

WHEN Alex Mula (pictured) asked his girlfriend to postpone their wedding, in the slim hope of a promotion, play-off extension to his season, he was probably in the dog-house for a few days.

Two quality goals in the exciting win over Real Oviedo backed his confidence… and smoothed the romantic path!

The 21-year-old, on loan from Malaga, would normally get star billing for his display. But it was actually another pleasing team effort, which provided three, straight victories.

The play-offs are still a tall order, but, regardless of the destination, the journey is

enchanting the fans, with 14,600 of them turning up for the Friday-night game.

Let’s not forget the little matter of more injury absentees, including Juan Villar, who was on a hot, scoring streak.

Bryan Acosta took on the main supply role for topscorer Longo, with Suso, Luis Milla, and Alberto giving steady support.

WINNING away is the key to Marino climbing back into the top half of their Tercera Division, and challenging for the promotion play-offs.

That’s why the team were delighted to return from Gran Canaria with a tough

victory. Yet the balance was tilted in their favour, when Juanyi was sent off after 25 minutes.

But they had to wait until the 78th minute to ensure the win. That’s when midfielder Zeben Buades, who joined from Santa Ursula last summer and is Marino’s secret weapon, struck his ninth goal of the season.

Ruiz, an inspiration at 34 years old, out-jumped Oviedo players, and prompted several, good, forward raids.

And the second goal was another cracker. Longo was bundled off a high ball that dropped loose, but Mula pounced on it, and had the vision and skill to launch a long-range rocket past the keeper.

The second half opened with Oviedo trying to up their game, and they hit a post before Tenerife took charge again. Acosta should have scored the third goal, but he took the ball wide and blasted it into the sidenetting.

Longo and Acosta were building a nice understanding, and the Italian won the ball off Verdes to set up Honduran Acosta, who shot wide again.

Acosta turned provider with a gentle pass for Alberto, who put his boot too far under the ball, and blasted it over the bar.

Oviedo, attempting to hold on to a play-off place, caught Tenerife out with a Saul breakaway, which finished with a glancing header by Forlin, into the home goal.

But Tenerife responded positively with more attacking play. Aitor Sanz, a sub for Suso, played a more adventurous role than usual, and, with Mula turning on the speed on the left, the chances kept coming.

After 72 minutes, another Acosta break tore Oviedo open. A square ball to Mula took out the defence, and the youngster buried the ball in the net.

There was brief danger as Oviedo found a way through, but Dani averted the threat, with a good boot up-field.

It was good to see Juan Carlos Real get a five-minute run-out as Mula departed to loud applause. The sub hasn’t had a look-in for a few weeks, but he had a half-chance blocked after good work from Longo.

The win didn’t see Tenerife take a big jump up the table. They are still 12th, but they’ve reduced the points gap on the top six to just four.

The only negatives from the win were bookings for Ruiz and Alberto, which mean they are suspended for Sunday’s game at Numancia.

But Tenerife’s hopes of getting extra dates in the playoffs are alive and kicking.

As for Mula, he has a special, new date of 2nd July for his wedding.

Ladie’s Football SIMPLY beating Athletic Bilbao would have been pleasing, but Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife surpassed that ambition with a scoreline that reflected their domination.

It was a game packed with goals of the highest calibre, and the outcome lifted Granadilla to third in Spain’s Premier League - their highest-ever position.

Bilbao were extremely physical from the start, as they tried to stem the enthusiasm and enterprise of a Granadilla team, looking to spread the ball and use both wings.

Cristina Martin-Prieto was in menacing form down the right, and Eva Llamas came from a deep midfield slot to test Ainhoa in the Bilbao goal.

The visitors were so hardpressed that they took 10 minutes to even penetrate the home half. Maite moved the ball out wide to Eunate, whose run ended when she lost control of the ball, which ran out of play.

Cristina was about to tease Bilbao with another run, but Garazi bulldozed her to the ground. As a result, an injured leg troubled her for a while, but she was still a threat.

Llamas was off on a speedy run again, and her cross was met by Maria Jose Perez after a tenacious sprint. But the ball was out for a corner.

And on the stroke of half-time, Maria Jose burst through again, and, with some clever footwork, outwitted the defence and the keeper to make it 2-1.

Bilbao continued their bruising ways in the second half, but it did them little good as Granadilla countered with neat, crisp football.

Pisco was getting in some good positions continually, and put a couple of shots wide. But the third goal arrived after 65 minutes,

when a free-kick from Sara Tui found Maria Estella, who delivered a low header past the keeper.

Cristina gave way for the fresh legs of Ana Gonzalez, who gave Bilbao plenty more problems to cope with. Corres could have put the visitors back in the game, but, faced with an inviting goalmouth, she dragged her shot wide.

Bilbao started the day above Granadilla in the league, but their confidence drained away as the home players pinned them down.

Sara Tui, enjoying an influential game, sprayed passes that exposed the slow responses of the Bilbao defence.

But their forwards still needed watching, and Corres led a rare attack, repelled by Pili’s superb, double save in the Granadilla goal.

Granadilla pressed to increase their advantage in the final minutes, and a

rushed clearance conceded a throw-in, well inside their half.

Tenerife’s Cup regrets REIGNING champions Iberostar Tenerife were put out of this year’s European Champions League in the first knock-out round.

UCAM Murcia overturned a five-point deficit in the second leg at the holders’ La Laguna stadium with an 83-72 win.

Tenerife should have killed the tie a week earlier, but they let home side Murcia grab six late points to keep the door open.

With three minutes left, Tenerife’s Mike Tobey missed two free shots.

Murcia broke to the other end of the court, where Urtasun put two lethal shots through the hoop. And that four-point difference went a long way to settling the tie.

Mateusz Ponitka was Tenerife’s top scorer with 16 points, but the support in depth was lacking. They should have built on a firstquarter 18-15, but Murcia did their damage with a 2515 second quarter that left the tie wide open. The final quarters of 16-13 and 2726, in favour of the visitors,

ensured a comfortable night for them.

But value for money is what Iberostar Tenerife fans got from their league thriller against Zaragoza at home.

The match was tied at 86 each at the end of the regular four quarters, so the game went to overtime, in which a 14-8 success clinched the points for Tenerife 100-94.

It was vital for Tenerife to get back to domestic wins after the distraction of cup games had seen them slip down the ratings.

It was nip and tuck all the way with quarters of 24-28, 15-18, 22-17, and 25-23, to add some bonus play to the faithful followers in the La Laguna stadium.

A new hero emerged from this game, Ferran Bassas outshining the usual big guns. His 16-point haul drove the win that nudged Tenerife up to ninth place.

But injuries have disrupted the Tenerife line-up all season, and there is a lot of hard work needed for them to avoid a flat finish to a promising campaign.

Top four stay put!

They are level on points with Scruffy Macs A, who won their derby game against Scruffy Boys 8-4. Tony Ashurst, showing why he is second in the stats, won his three games on the night. He has been

beaten just 12 times this season, after playing 44 games.

The Second Division’s Yelas Travellers were the only team in the top three to win this week, beating Happy Days 8-4. With Neil Lovelock winning all three of his games, Yelas now have a four-point cushion at the top.

Tremendous results were recorded by The Reef, who defeated Bar Leones 10-2, and T.P.T, who beat BBJs United by the same margin.

But, by far, the week’s outstanding performance came from The Hunters’ Ben Haigh.

Speared, but what fun!

DESPITE having just four players, Dennis and his intrepid Palms Pool Bar team, who made the long trip to Spear Chuckers, were rewarded handsomely with a brilliant night of banter.

Okay, they lost 8-0, but the evening was all about enjoyment, as it should be, and they had no complaints.

Phoenix Bar welcomed Picasso’s Pool Bar and won 7-1, thanks to their superb finishing, while Boothen travelled to league leaders Scruffy Macs, and came away with an unexpected 6-2 victory.

Steve, again in fine form for the visitors, chalked up his latest maximum, and the home side failed to hit their doubles, as they

normally do.

Waterfall visited The Loch-In A, taking them all the way to the trebles, in which the home team scraped through for a 5-3 win.

But, again, well played Waterfall!

Pas O Nadas A failed to post any high scores of merit, but they still secured a 6-2 success against Sundowners.

In Division 2, the games appeared to be one-sided, apart from the match between Buzzin B’s and Pas O Nadas B, which went to the wire. The home team came out on top with a lastgame win. A special mention for Gio, who missed a 170 check-out by a whisker.

Sandys regained top spot with a comprehensive 7-1 win over Marilyns B, and, with an identical scoreline, the bragging rights went to Naughty Nautas, who beat close rivals Nauta No-

Frampton’s peak fitness RUNNING up to Mount Teide National Park would exhaust most people, but it was just one round in a 10-day training trip to Tenerife for Belfast boxer Carl Frampton.

The 31-year-old, in Tenerife with a few other fighters, put himself through a punishing schedule, ahead of his 21st April fight against Nonito Donair, in the Belfast Arena.

Frampton, former world champion at featherweight and super-bantamweight, is on the comeback trail, aiming for a world title fight in 2019.

Boxing is as much

about the state of mind these days, as well as physical condition, and Carl is at his peak.

“We had a run up Teide, and the altitude makes it a good test,” he said. “We’ve been training hard and sparring hard, trying to batter each other.

But we’ve been having fun as well, and I’ve

never been happier as a boxer as I am right now.”

He certainly packed a lot into the visit: some training at the Povedano gym in the Las Americas stadium, plus beach time at Fañabe. And he also took in the CD Tenerife v Real Oviedo game.
