Beware, hidden speed cameras Continued from Front The remainder will be in place by early May, but it seems as though Los Cristianos has stolen a march on mainland DGT officials, according to one wary driver. She said: “At least two cameras have been installed, recently, on the roads in and out of the town, and they don’t appear to be visible. “It’s quite eerie at around 8.30 in the morning, when I’m taking the kids to school, because everyone is driving like a snail. “Usually, cars are dashing all over the place at that time, but word has spread quickly about the cameras, and most drivers seem to have taken it on board. “There are also suspicions about another camera on
the new bridge by the swimming pool, and all the motorists, who used to belt up and down on the dual carriageway, have also slowed right down.” Whether these DGT cameras are the same as those on the mainland remains to be seen. But they are certainly doing the trick. One police source disclosed that the fines for speeding in Los Cristianos had gone through the roof to start with, and that taxi-drivers were the main offenders. The DGT’s so-called Velolaser is a small, portable camera, which can record the speed of cars, “without being noticed” by the drivers. Their locations have not been revealed, but the cameras are lightweight and compact, which means
they can be positioned in the guard-rails and in police vehicles, among other, moreacceptable places. The Velolaser can capture speeds of up to 250km/h in both directions, at a distance of 15-50 metres, and can operate in extreme temperatures, between 0-50° C. Management of these laser cameras is possible from any mobile device, via a 3G or 4G connection, and the data can be sent to several devices at the same time. The traffic authority believes that, during this holiday period, they will help reduce accidents caused by speeding, even more. Throughout last year’s Holy Week, there were 29 deaths on Spanish roads, which was the lowest number of accidents in four years.
Plane scatters treasure trove worth a fortune
AN aeroplane, taking off in Siberia, lost much of its mind-blowing £265m cargo of diamonds, platinum and gold.
It happened when its loose hatch door in the hold fell off, near a car market in the region’s capital. Precious metals and diamonds rained over the runway and an area of Yakutia, which is Russia’s coldest region. The plane, bound for Krasnoyarsk, then made an emergency
landing at Magan, after staff discovered it had been leaking valuables. “The Nimbus Airlines AN-12 cargo plane hit problems during take-off, and the treasures fell out of the hold, and all over the runway,” reported The Siberian Times. “The plane then dropped some bars of gold as far as 15 miles from the airport.” Police sealed off the runway, and a vast search was soon underway. Only Secret Service operatives were allowed to take part, and it was unclear whether there had been an accident,
or a deliberate attempt at a heist. Technical engineers at the airport, who prepared it for takeoff, were detained and interrogated, but the cargo plane was said to have experienced problems during takeoff. The cargo was owned by Chukota Mining and Geological company, and some 75% of shares belong to Canadian Kinross Gold. Yakutsk is the capital of Yakutia, or the Sasha Republic, which, as well as being the country’s coldest area, is also Russia’s diamond-producing region.
Judge is investigating why apartment block collapsed
SOFIA Elena Valdivia, a judge from Arona Magistrate Courts, has opened an investigation into why a Los Cristianos apartment block collapsed in April 2016, killing seven residents. She gave Banco Santander 10 days to present the documents relating to the renovation, carried out by the Banesto bank, back in 2000, when Santander owned the premises. The paperwork requested by the judge includes all licences and names of contractors, as well as reform plans. The bank was on the ground level of the Julian Jose
apartment block, in Calle Amalia Alayon. The judge has also requested that the construction company doing building work on the premises at the time of the collapse, present the reports within 10 days to the magistrates. The firm must provide all the specifications of the project, in addition to any other relevant information that could benefit the investigation. The site, which is closed off, is now a memorial to the seven people who perished in the tragic collapse.

Hidden hash stash found in stolen car TWO teenagers, both aged 18, were arrested by the National Police, after acting suspiciously in a parked car in Santa Cruz. As soon as the youngsters spotted the police, they drove off, and, when the cops caught up with them, they searched what turned out to be a stolen vehicle, and found a hidden hashish stash, weighing just over 3kg. The police also came across several other items, including a plastic gun and three mobile phones, as well as documentation comprising identity cards, driving licences and credit cards, all stolen, mainly, from people in Las Americas. The youths are awaiting court procedures.

Man held, eight months after 190,000-euro theft GUARDIA Civil officers from Las Americas have arrested a 31-year-old San Miguel man for being involved in a violent robbery, nearly eight months ago, in which a sum of 190,000 euros was stolen. The burglary took place in the early hours of 29th August 2017, in the Costa
del Silencio shopping centre, when four men walked in wearing masks, to avoid detection by the CCTV cameras. Then, once inside, they startled a security guard, who was later beaten badly by the violent gang, receiving blows to his head and body while he was tied up and gagged. The four thieves later left the shopping centre with a safe containing the huge cash haul.
The security guard was discovered the following morning by cleaners, who immediately alerted the Emergency Services. And, because of his bad injuries, together with the traumatic experience he had experienced, he was later admitted to hospital. When the Guardia officers arrived at the scene, they inspected the area meticulously and found DNI from one of the four thieves, who had cut himself.
With the help of the Santa Cruz Institute of Toxicology, plus forensic scientists, an identification was made from DNA, taken from an eye test by the thief, which matched that of his blood. The man’s ID was also possible, because he already had a police record for similar crimes he had committed previously. The suspect is, at present, awaiting sentencing from the Magistrates Court in Arona.
Online slimming pills were big ‘health risk’
POLICE have arrested two people in Sevilla for the on-line sale of illegal weight-loss products, alleged to pose a “serious health risk” to buyers. In a raid on the couple’s home in Sevilla, the National Police found 1,850 packs of the illegal products, manufactured in a Mexico laboratory, and 72,520 euros in cash. The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products said that the sale of the products advertised on the internet was illegal, and that they posed a serious risk for health, because of the lack of a medical prescription or control. Additionally, there was no guarantee of the manufacturing process, or their safe storage. Officers also found 28,880 cigarettes, possibly counterfeit, scattered around the property in boxes. It is believed that they were intended for illegal sale in the family bakery attached their house.
That really is quick! POLICE have arrested a 39-year-old man, who was filmed hitting 186mph during an illegal road race in Spain. It is believed to be the highest road speed ever
recorded there. But the cops are still after the person who drove the other car, and a passenger from each vehicle. The man driving the 200,000euro, Audi R8 supercar, could be imprisoned for up to two years, with a ban of 1-6 years if convicted of dangerous driving. The
illegal race took place on the M-50 motorway, near Madrid, where the speed limit is 75mph. The seized car had previously appeared on a Russian website for the purchase of high-performance vehicles, and was listed in Benidorm, on the Costa Blanca.
A disabled driver previously held the “record” for the highest recorded speed on Spain’s roads. He was caught clocking 185mph in a Porsche, which he had taken out for a test drive in March 2016. He was fined heavily, and banned from the roads for a year.
Old folk are abused by family members A SPANISH couple have been arrested and are under investigation for domestic abuse of elderly relatives, who are in their eighties.
Investigations were carried out by the National Police, who detained a 58-yearold man and his partner, 57, who are part of the old couple’s family in Malaga. The man, their son-inlaw, has been questioned, because, it is believed, he
played a part in physically abusing the elderly couple. Their daughter is also being questioned because she has, allegedly, ignored the situation, making no effort to contact the police. But neighbours and local citizens contacted officials,
because they were so concerned about what was happening to the old folk, inside their family home. More disturbing facts are that the abuse was said to have been carried out by family members, posing as the couple’s carers.

Innocent man sues for wrongful arrest SPAIN and the UK are facing a joint, 1.8meuro compensation claim by a man who was accused, incorrectly, of being a terrorist. Farid Hilali was jailed in Britain following an international arrest warrant, issued by Spain in 2004. Authorities believed the Moroccan citizen was a member of Al-Qaeda, and that he was passing messages to the leader of a Spanish cell about the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington. But Spain’s High Court acquitted Farid in 2012, after admitting that there was no evidence.

Spanish man dies in London hotel A SPANIARD died from carbon monoxide poisoning, while staying at a London hotel in upmarket Kensington. Marcos Severa, 34, from Mallorca, was poisoned after toxic gas, allegedly, leaked into the heating system of the Mayflower Hotel. His room-mate, 37-year-old Esteban Garcia, from Madrid, was in a medically-induced coma,
after being rushed to the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. The incident has been confirmed by Spain’s Interior Ministry. The two victims, who had travelled to the capital to attend a concert, shared a room. Police reported that “initial examinations” carried out at the hotel, which was evacuated and cordoned
off, showed “a high volume of carbon monoxide”, and the investigation is continuing. Family members of the hospitalised Spaniard have travelled to London, according to close sources. There may be another 14 victims of toxic-gas poisoning at the hotel, although their names and nationalities have not yet been disclosed.
Giving something back
ALL together: Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares, Noelle Corridan, Irish Community, plus Fidel Ortega and Ana Onieda from Asociacion San Juan
EARLIER this week, Tenerife’s Irish community handed over a cheque for 1,285 euros to Adeje-based Asociación San Juan. The money was raised during the annual Gala St Patrick’s dinner, and Institutional Relations Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares said: “This is more than a gesture; it is also a symbol of how our many cultures and communities live and work together, in respect and mutual harmony. “The Irish community wanted to give something back to the Adeje community, and the Asociacion San Juan, a non-government group working with special-needs individuals, were delighted to be the recipients.”

The parents who neglected tiny tot A TOT of three would have lived, had his parents taken him to the doctors, back in 2013. Instead, he was said to have died of neglect. Two forensic doctors confirmed their findings before a Las Palmas court jury, and stressed that he would still be alive if his mother and father had provided even minimum health care. They were told that the boy had died from a lung disease, caused by a series of circumstances. Both forensic doctors, who performed an autopsy on the child, said that his illness could have been cured with a simple course of antibiotics. Instead, he would have suffered a fever, a cough and breathing difficulties. But the child had no medical history, because he had never been seen by any doctor in his short life. Forensics also looked at the boy’s facial disfigurement, which, his
parents said, was a cleft lip. They didn’t seem to think it was of any importance, and never sorted medical advice. The doctors said in evidence that it was not a cleft lip and that, at a very early age, the tragic child could have suffered a blow to his face. Both doctors knew, through the scar tissue, that the little mite would have needed medical attention, including plastic surgery. They agreed that the facial damage would have created problems, which, in the end, would have led to breathing difficulties and malnutrition. The forensic doctors also reported that the child was severely malnourished, and that, at the time of his death, aged three years and five months, he weighed nine kilos (1½ stone), which was as light as a nine-month-old baby, and measured just 84cms (2ft 9ins). Yurena SA and her husband, Isidro Yeray SR, who are on trial for killing their son, could each be facing 15 years in prison if found guilty.

NEWS IN BRIEF Stunt teenager is rescued
POLICE rescued a 14-year-old girl who became trapped on the eighth floor of a Barcelona building, after a stunt went wrong. The teenager had climbed out from a roof and was hanging by her arms from a beam, 40 metres above the ground, while a friend took snaps. But she didn’t have the strength in her arms to get back to safety, and she ended up stranded on a ledge. The boy accompanying her couldn’t help, and the girl suffered a panic attack, realising that any false move could have resulted in her plunging to the ground. Catalonia’s police force, Mossos d’Esquadra, and Guardia Civil officers, were on the scene swiftly, hauling her back to safety. A medical team treated the girl, who suffered minor injuries to her arms.
Diver has lucky escape
A MAN from Lithuania, aged 49, had to be pulled out of the water in Las Galletas last Wednesday afternoon at about 1pm, after having a heart attack. A call was made to emergency services, requesting medical assistance, and the man was unconscious at the time of his rescue. Medics began CPR immediately, and the diver soon regained consciousness. Then, once stabilised, he was transferred to Hospiten Sur, in Las Americas.
Drunken Brit’s death fall
POLICE have launched a probe into the death of 23-yearold British student James Walton, reportedly “drunk”, who plummeted from a fourth-floor balcony in Mallorca capital Palma in the early hours of last Sunday. James, on a placement year from Sheffield Hallam University, was said to have been celebrating St Patrick’s Day, late into the night with four friends. But they were aware of the tragedy only when officers knocked on the door of their apartment. A pedestrian found him unconscious on the pavement, but medics, who said he had suffered a heart attack as a result of the fall, pronounced him dead at the scene.

New rubbish disposal system for La Caleta
LA CALETA now has a modern rubbish disposal system, unique to Adeje, which is an electric compactor machine for organic waste. “The Council is responding to local needs to improve waste collection in the area, where there are a lot of residents and tourists, and a high concentration of restaurants”, said Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, the Municipal Services Councillor. Area Councillor Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro, and a representative of municipal sanitation company UTE Ascan Torrabonaf, presented the
plan to La Caleta Residents’ Association, introducing the modern collection system for organic waste, as well as new recycling waste containers. The compactor has a capacity of 14,000 litres, and can be used 24 hours a day, with a hydraulic opening and closing mechanism, which will reduce odours in the zone immensely. “With the new system, the La Caleta neighbourhood will see its waste-management improve, and, overall, the collection will be more efficient,” said Rodríguez del Toro. She said the compact containers were the equivalent of 40 old waste-containers, and Adeje Council had acquired a specific area for
their installation, to avoid problems for residents. Representatives from the UTE Ascan Torrabonaf service were in La Caleta to explain the new system to residents and restaurant owners. And the Council is also happy to offer recycling courses for any local establishment interested. Use of these new containers is outlined in the instructions on the information panels. By pressing a button on the panel, the tray for depositing waste bags will be accessed. Then, place the bag in the appropriate area and close the tray to allow the machine to begin the automatic-compacting operation.
No need to hunt for a pharmacy ADEJE borough’s opening of eight new pharmacies demonstrates the huge population growth there in recent years. They are licensed by the Canarian Health Service, and the area now has 21 serving the public. Health Protection Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo said: “Opening these new pharmacies was a necessity, given the growth in the local population. “And there is a need to provide a service for the huge numbers who visit Adeje, because some may also need a pharmacy during their stay.”
The pharmacies are spread throughout the municipality, from Tijoco Bajo, Adeje centre, Las Torres, San Eugenio, Fañabé, Costa Adeje, Fañabé, the Plaza del Duque, Fañabe and Oasis commercial centres, San Eugenio Los Olivos, Las Américas, Armeñime,
Miraverde and Callao Salvaje. In all, there are more than 60 pharmacies in Tenerife, and Adeje and Arona have the greatest number between them, given the density of the local population. But the current round of licence allocations has now closed.

Kids’ parents pushing for homework boycott PARENTS across Spain have been insisting on a “homework-free Easter” for their children, in the latest step of the ongoing debate about kids spending their free time with schoolbooks. The Spanish PTA Confederation (CEAPA), which has around 11,000 members nationwide, staged a 2016 “homework strike”, in which mums and dads wrote to teachers to tell them their children would not be undertaking any work at weekends. Instead, they said, their kids would be spending quality time with their families in the fresh air, and taking part in physical activity. The CEAPA members also raised a petition, calling for homework to be axed altogether, or at least over weekends and school holidays. Even primary schoolchildren, in their early years,
have nightly homework, and the average pupil in Spain is glued to his or her textbooks for around 2-3 hours, once home from class. Lessons end at 5pm for most primary schoolkids, meaning it can be as late as 9pm before they have finished their homework. Parents, and a majority of teachers, put the blame partly on the education reform, brought in by former schools’ minister José Ignacio Wert. It has always been unpopular because it is

considered too right-wing and too facts-and-figuresbased, relying on learning by rote at the expense of critical thinking and creativity, and various other factors. According to mums and dads, since the introduction of the reform, known as LOMCE, children spend more time on homework than ever before. And this, they consider, is a sign that their learning in the classroom “is not meeting their educational needs”. The CEAPA says there
is no positive correlation between time spent on homework and academic success, since children who spend all their free time working become “burnt out” and achieve worse results. The PTA Confederation members also consider that schools are “passing the buck” too much to children, giving them more and more homework to compensate for less learning in the classroom. “Homework, far from encouraging a child’s allround development, forms part of a damaging legacy of an obsolete method of education, based upon memorisation and repetition of content,” says the CEAPA. “It also creates tension between parents and their children, since it leads to problems with family unity. Adults do not have time to supervise such extensive volumes of work outside of school, and children and parents do not spend quality time together. “Children need time to
practise sports, arts, travel, and other activities both fun and restful, which also contribute to their personal development.” The CEAPA last week launched the Twitter hashtag #StopDeberes (“Stop Homework”) to encourage people who believe homework should be reduced dramatically, or axed, to give their reasons on the social media site, and turn it into a trending topic. Their first campaign step is to call for schools not to set homework over the Easter holidays, so children can spend those two weeks relaxing, having fun, enjoying their family and friends, and, indirectly, learning and developing through healthy pastimes. The CEAPA also feels that the homework excess is doing nothing to alleviate the growing concerns about childhood obesity, since kids are forced to spend more time sitting down by default, rather than practising physical activity.

Dark side of Adeje MOST of Adeje borough’s municipal lighting on buildings will be switched off between 8.30-9.30pm tomorrow (Saturday), as part of the annual Earth Hour, hosted by the World Wide Fund and celebrated throughout the globe. The event was launched in 2007, with Adeje signing up in 2012 and taking part ever since. Councillor Esther Rivero
Vargas said: “This is a global, symbolic gesture against climate change, and for the care of our environment. “Our commitment to the planet is strong, and here, in the borough, we have been changing over the lighting on our street lamps to more sustainable bulbs. “We are also increasing the number of public green zones, thus contributing to the improvement in air quality.” The Councillor added: “Every little bit helps, and, if millions of people make small changes, we can build a future based on clean energies for the
benefit of the planet.” During the Earth Hour, the lights along Fañabe beach will be turned off, as will those lighting up the Casa Fuerte, the exteriors of municipal sports centres, cultural centres, the main Town Hall, Costa Adeje’s Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA) and other public buildings. And in parks, along some tourist zones, and in the Plaza de España, lighting will be reduced. The WWF Earth Hour is now acknowledged in more than 7,000 towns and cities worldwide, and Adeje Council is inviting its residents to take part in the initiative as well.
Kids’ ref attacked by furious father A JUNIOR football match was called off before it had even started last Sunday, because an aggressive father punched the referee. The match should have featured youngsters from the Juventud Laguna and CD San Andreas clubs, but the father was unhappy that his son’s club trainer hadn’t picked him to play. The angry dad then took matters into his own hands by punching the innocent
match official in the face, in front of the young players and their supporters. The referee immediately called the police, who arrived promptly, and, sadly, the La Laguna match had to be postponed. The video has gone viral, especially on Whatsapp, after the images were recorded by other parents. Once they witnessed what was happening, they approached the bench to protect children from the brawl, as well as keeping a close eye on their own sons.

Ryanair accused of of harsh price rises RYANAIR passengers are seething, because the budget airline has doubled the price of reserving a standard seat to £4, as well as increasing the price of its extra-legroom seats, from £11 to £15. The increases have been announced, even as British holiday-makers are accusing Michael O’Leary’s company of splitting up groups and families purposefully, so that they have to pay the extra fee to sit together. Dozens of passengers have complained about the policy, including one party of 20 golfers, who were flying from the UK to Spain. According to one of the group, three of them paid for leg-room, and the others were all placed in middle seats. Last year, a hen party had to scatter themselves around 15 rows, despite checking in four days ahead of their flight. The Civil Aviation Authority
Human-trafficking gang nailed by cops says it is now launching an inquiry, following so many complaints, and Chief Executive Andrew Hinton has warned that the watchdog will not hesitate to take action against ripoff airlines. In fact, the authority has written to 20 airlines, demanding an explanation of how their computer systems allocate seats. Hinton said: “Airline seating practices are, clearly, causing some confusion for consumers. Airlines are within their rights to charge for allocated seats, but if they do so, it must be done in a fair and transparent way. “Our research shows
that some consumers are paying to sit together when, in fact, they might not need to. “We will not hesitate to take any necessary, enforcement action, should it be required, at the end of the review.” A Ryanair spokesperson said: “Like all businesses, our fees can change - unlike our fares, which keep coming down. “There have been some recent changes, as per our list of fees. But they are all optional to our customers, and Ryanair continue to offer the lowest fares on flights, with our average fare in the UK this year less than £35.”
SPANISH cops have arrested 155 people, involved in a human-trafficking ring, which dispatched people to the UK and Ireland. Those arrested are mostly Chinese, and the National Police believe that four of them are gang leaders. Many of the members were held at Barcelona’s El Prat Airport. Investigators believe that the human-trafficking group charged individuals 20,000 euros, in return for passports and other
documents, which had been forged in China. Once in Europe, the victims were housed in Barcelona, and other towns in Cataluña, until they received their newlyforged documents, which were sent once a week via courier companies. Budget airline tickets were bought on the day of the flight to avoid police detection. In addition to the arrests, the cops also seized computers, mobile phones and forged identity documents, plus cash to the value of 11,250 euros and 16,000 Chinese yuan, as well as two, hand-made, passport stamps.

Centre of attention for our dog-lovers NATIVIDAD Arnaiz Martínez, a Canarian regional parliament Deputy, visited Adeje’s animal rescue centre last week to discover how it operates, and the regulations governing this borough-run enterprise. She was accompanied by Health Protection Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo and the staff there, as well as the attendant vet, together with a representative of the animalprotection association, who works with the centre to facilitate adoptions. Arnaiz Martínez, who requested a formal visit, learned that it was Tenerife’s only public centre of its kind. It meets all the legal requirements for the care of animals, and has a fullyequipped, veterinary consultancy room, exclusively for the centre’s animals,
with a qualified vet in regular attendance. Councillor Bencomo said: “The excellent reports we are getting from visitors speak for themselves, as do the high level of adoptions, which have risen by 50%. We have, on average, 12 dogs staying in the centre at any given time. This low number owes much to the work of the animal
protection association Dogs Welfare Trust, which works directly with us in the centre.” Anyone wishing to adopt from there will be taking home a healthy dog, which has been vaccinated, micro-chipped, neutered, fully-checked, and with a European animal passport, all provided free of charge.
The Dogs Welfare trust will also underwrite the cost of the appropriate licence for those dogs falling into the “dangerous breeds” category. The Deputy was interested in what happens when an animal has been found wandering alone: how it is identified, and whether, if chipped, the owners are contacted, etc. She also asked questions about the centre’s care and sanitation policy, and how the dogs were treated for parasites, prepared for adoption, as well as public campaigns, etc. Her visit also highlighted the fact that volunteers will soon be able to sign up to help in the centre, with its various animal activities. Its public hours, for those interested in adopting a dog, are from Monday to Friday, 9am-1pm, and no prior appointment is necessary. But if you would prefer, call 922 756 201, particularly if you want to find out what, exactly, is the adoption process.

Beaten Spain’s rugby rumpus Happy hippo stops traffic
SPAIN’S national rugby team have accused a Romanian referee of bias, after they had failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup in Japan. The ref, appointed to officiate by Rugby Europe, had to be escorted from the pitch last Sunday, after Spain’s shock 18-10 defeat against Belgium in Brussels, resulted in Romania qualifying for the finals. Spain would have been guaranteed a spot in Japan had they won, but their loss means they will have to beat Portugal and Samoa in the
play-offs to reach Japan. After the final whistle, angry Spanish players confronted the ref, Vlad Iordachescu, accusing him of being biased against them. Spain captain Jaime Nava said his side had been “eliminated by external factors”, adding: “Today, rugby has lost.” Rugby Europe said it would not be commenting until the “usual full review” of the match official’s performance had been conducted. “The meeting’s agenda will be modified, and a large portion of it will be devoted to the analysis of every stage of the Belgium v Spain game,” said a spokesman.
“Following this meeting, a statement will be released to Rugby Europe Board of Directors for dissemination.” The ref ’s controversial appointment followed that of South African Marius van der Westhuizen, who was removed from his assistantreferee post at Twickenham last weekend, because he had attended an England training session. However, it didn’t do the side much good, because they were thrashed by a jubilant Ireland side, who completed their fifth, consecutive win to complete the Grand Slam. And on St Patrick’s Day as well!
TRAFFIC was halted after a hippopotamus, which escaped from a travelling circus, roamed the streets of La Garrovilla, in western Spain.
The mammoth animal was captured, safely, by Guardia Civil, and returned to its owners. Hippos are regarded as one of the world’s most dangerous animals, because of their aggressive behaviour, killing an average of 2,900 people a year, in comparison with six killed by sharks. And adult hippos, which weigh an average 1,500kg (3,310 lb), are capable of running at 30 km/h (19 mph) over short distances.

Former ETA terrorist back inside, after his early-release mistake A FORMER member of the Basque terrorist cell ETA, who fled to the UK, has been jailed for six years after being extradited to Spain in May 2017. Antonio Troitiño Arranz was released “in error” in 2011 after 24 years in jail for his role, among others, in the bus bombing in Madrid’s Plaza de la República Dominicana in the 1980s, which led to the deaths of several Guardia Civil officers. He was not scheduled to be released until January 2017, in accordance with the “Parot Doctrine” in force at the time. This doctrine meant that early release, earned for “good behaviour”, one day deducted from a sentence for every two full days of work carried out in prison, applied to the actual sentence awarded, rather than the custodial term. In the case of ETA terrorists, sentences have often run into hundreds or thousands of years, which meant that no amount of work while behind bars would grant them early release. Yet the maximum, custodial term for prisoner in Spain is 30 years at present. The “Parot Doctrine” was condemned by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg in October 2013, meaning early-release days earned through working in prison were to be applied to the custodial term, the maximum being 30 years, rather than the sentence, if it were longer. Although an advisory verdict only, Spain considered itself morally obliged to apply it. That led to several notorious killers, including Miquel Ricart, convicted for the multiple rape, torture and murder of three teenagers
Teenager electrocuted A BOY of 17 is in a critical condition in Candelaria Hospital, after being found electrocuted in Guimar. The emergency services, who were contacted at 6pm last Friday, were told that a boy was unconscious inside an electricity tower. On reaching the tower, the ambulance team confirmed that his heart had stopped, and began CPR immediately. After a short while, the boy regained consciousness and was then rushed to Candelaria Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

from Alcàsser (Valencia province) in late 1992, and Troitiño’s ETA colleague, Inés del Río Prada, being released immediately. Troitiño was freed in 2011 after earning six years of early release “credits”, but Spain decided to apply the “Parot Doctrine”retroactively, which meant his return to prison. By then, however, he had fled to London. ETA had provided him with six, fake, ID documents, bearing different names, as well as two driving licences and two Spanish health cards, so that he could live under assumed identities to avoid capture. The cell also provided him with accommodation and shelter in the house of another ETA member, Iñaki Lerín, in the English capital. It took until 10 months ago before Westminster Court agreed to extradite him, because of various, legal loopholes. When he was sentenced in Spain, “terrorism” was not a specific UK crime, and, initially, it was alleged he would not get a fair trial on home turf. Troitiño declared that since he had left prison in 2011
and set up home in London, he had “received no orders from ETA, and would not even pass the time of day with them if he met them on the street”. His flight was in anticipation of the “Parot Doctrine” being abolished, and after ETA had already announced a ceasefire. The terror cell’s last attack was in Palmanova, Mallorca, in the summer of 2009, and its last major blast was on 30th December 2006, at Madrid Airport’s T4 carpark. But National Court magistrates Concepción Espejel, Jesús Eduardo Gutiérrez and Nicolás Poveda considered that Troitiño had joined ETA again, once out of prison, and that the mere possession of fake ID supplied by the organisation was proof of this. The magistrates, however, considered that the accused’s only involvement in terrorism was “latent reintegration”, not involving “any contact with weapons” or criminal activity, but merely “placing himself at the disposal” of ETA. According to the court, the so-called “Collective of ETA
Refugees”, as the terror cell names them, do not have any access to guns or explosives, but are known in many cases to have “provided material, financial, legal and documentary assistance” to members who leave Spain. Troitiño’s “situation, as a refugee abroad, exonerates him from actual terrorist activity”, says the court, given that ETA only ever operated in Spain for reasons relating to Basque independence and reunification. But the court said “it did, indeed, allow him to participate in providing institutional support and to assist other members on the run”, meaning Troitiño was still considered to have “acted in favour of the organisation”. Troitiño was, initially, facing 11 years in jail upon extradition, at the recommendation of the prosecution. But his nonmaterial role in terrorism means this had been reduced to one day short of six years. After this, he will be electronically-tagged, and kept under court surveillance for 2½ years.
THREE young Spanish schoolkids were taken to hospital after eating the contents of a yellow container, usually found in chocolate eggs, which they came cross in the school playground. The youngsters, aged six and seven, came across the container, resembling those from a well-known confectionary brand, during break time at their Cadiz school. They scoffed the contents, believing it was a “treat”. But when the pupils started showing signs of sickness and dizziness in class, school staff rushed them to a health centre. Samples from the unwitting youngsters tested positive for hashish, and they were kept under observation for the remainder of the day. All three have now fully recovered, but National Police officers are investigating the incident.

The Godfather watched over huge haul of drugs
A MAMMOTH drugs bust in Spain and Portugal led to the seizure of 2.5 tonnes of cocaine, worth an estimated 125 million euros, and 10 people were arrested. The drugs were packaged into one-kilo, vacuumsealed “bricks”, and stamped with logos featuring the 1972 Mafia film The Godfather, featuring Marlon Brando as mob boss Don Corleone. Other “bricks” were decorated with the logos of car brands Mini and Rolls Royce. Cops from both countries swooped on a Lisbon
warehouse, where two tonnes of coke were being stored, and half-a-tonne was found in a false floor, installed in a car, as it travelled just across the Spanish border in Badajoz, Extremadura. Artur Vaz, chief of Portugal’s anti-narcotics police, said: “The drugs were to go first to Spain, and from there to other destinations in Europe.” The arrested nine men, and one woman, were from Spain, Colombia and Poland, confirmed his Spanish counterpart, Antonio Duarte. He added that they belonged to a “vast crime gang, dedicated to transporting huge amounts of cocaine from Latin America to Europe”.
Bee-sting therapy triggers a tragedy AN unnamed woman has died, at an unnamed Spanish clinic, after undergoing bizarre bee-venom therapy. She had attended a session of apitherapy every month for two years to improve muscular contractures, which cause joint stiffness, and stress levels, without any allergic reactions. Apitherapy is the use of substances from honeybees, including honey, propolis and royal jelly, and even bee venom.
This therapy involves a therapist holding a bee by its head and pinching it until the bee’s stinger emerges and punctures the patient’s skin. On this occasion, following a live bee-sting during a session, the patient suffered anaphylactic shock (a life-threatening, allergic reaction to the venom), developing wheezing and a sudden loss of consciousness. The clinic staff called an ambulance, which took 30 minutes to arrive, and medics administered a steroid. But no adrenaline was available.
Tests later revealed that the anaphylactic reaction to the bee venom had triggered a stroke and left her in a “permanent coma”. The woman died of multi-organ failure, some weeks later. Medics wrote in a research paper: “To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of death by beevenom apitherapy due to complications of severe anaphylaxis in a confirmed, sensitised patient.” Proponents of apitherapy make claims for its health benefits, but this procedure remains unsupported by evidence-based medicine.

The new UK tax year: What changes from April? By Paul Montague
Partner, blevins Franks
THE new UK tax year starts on 6th April 2018. What changes may affect expatriates in Spain?
Personal allowance: The amount of UK income you can earn tax-free increases slightly from £11,500 to £11,850. Although previous governments suggested removing this benefit for non-resident British nationals, most expatriates are still eligible. Some expect this could change with Brexit. Dividend allowance: This falls from £5,000 to £2,000. While this may affect those with large portfolios of shares, non-UK residents could still receive dividends tax-free in the UK through the ‘disregarded income’ regime. However, expatriates can access alternative tax-efficient investment opportunities. Gift exemption: UK inheritance liability can be mitigated by gifting money/ assets within your lifetime. The tax-free threshold remains frozen at £3,000, but you can carry forward any unused allowance from the previous year. With good estate planning, expatriates
can potentially establish more effective ways to pass their legacy to chosen heirs tax efficiently. Family home allowance: Increasing from £100,000 to £125,000 per person, this provides extra relief when passing on a main UK home to direct descendants. The good news for expatriates is that an overseas property qualifies, provided it is your main home (although local inheritance taxes may still apply). Capital gains tax exemption: This tracks inflation by increasing to £11,700 (£5,850 for most trusts). NonUK residents have only recently attracted capital gains taxes on the sale of UK residential property (on growth accrued since
April 2015). From next April, commercial UK property is expected to become liable. If this affects you, review your options now to reduce future liabilities. The lifetime allowance: This is the combined value of pension benefits you can hold before attracting higher taxation. The £1 million allowance for 2017/18 rises with inflation, allowing you to accrue an extra £30,000 in pension benefits without incurring 25% or 55% tax penalties. Even with this extra allowance, today’s high transfer values for ‘final salary’ pensions make it easier to trigger lifetime allowance penalties. In any case, take regulated advice to establish the best pension solution for your
individual circumstances and goals. Tax thresholds: Higher rate taxpayers will be £340 better off a year, as the upper threshold for 40% income tax rates increases to £46,350. Meanwhile, Scotland introduces a fiveband structure, increasing the previous top rate and threshold to 41% and £43,430, and adding a 46% tax band over £150,000. The State Pension: Increasing 3% in line with inflation, this represents an extra £191 a year for those who started drawing benefits before 6 April 2015; £250 for others. British expatriates settled in the EU before April 2019 will continue to receive cost-ofliving increases post-Brexit.
Council tax: If you retain unoccupied UK property (vacant for two years or more), your rates could double, as local authorities gain the power to increase council tax premiums by 100%. Buy-to-let tax relief: From 6th April, landlords can only deduct 50% of mortgage interest repayments against rental income (previously 75%). This is on course to gradually whittle down to zero by 2020/21. Overall, this new tax year brings relatively few changes, but it is worth checking you are making the most of all the available opportunities to minimise your tax liabilities, in the UK and Spain. Seek personalised advice from a professional who can guide you on both UK and Spanish tax and the interaction between the two regimes. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. One success for banks By mariano zunino siri

I AM returning to the generous jurisprudence of the High Courts and Supreme Court, regarding the abusive clauses of Mortgage Loans. Apart from the abusive floor clause (“cláusula suelo”), others, which I have referred to in the past, could also be be considered abusive. The Courts and High Courts have been ruling contradictory judgements in relation to such clauses,
especially the one that sets the payment of Mortgage Law taxes. Now, though, the Supreme Court has finally settled who is actually in charge of such taxes. It has recently deliberated and resolved two appeals, in relation to consumer complaints, against clauses of their Mortgage Loan Deeds, which stated that the payment of all expenses and taxes, generated by the operation, would be paid by the customer. The Court, which has based its own jurisprudence on the abusive clause, without negotiation, and, indiscriminately, has attributed the payment of expenses and taxes to the consumer, even though the law, according to different assumptions, distributes them. In these specific cases, the Supreme Court was already studying the clause relat-
ing only to the payment of Transfer Tax and Stamp Duty (“Impuesto de Transmisiones Patrimoniales y Actos Jurídicos Documentados”), and documented
legal acts. The Court has estimated, in part, the appeals filed by the affected consumers, establishing that on these appeals, several
tax situations must be distinguished: *For the constitution of the loan, the payment is the responsibility of the taxpaying borrower. *By the stamp of the Notarial documents, the tax corresponding to the Matrix Deed (the original deed, kept at the notary), will be paid, in equal parts, between the lender and the borrower, and the tax corresponding to the released copies, by whoever requests them. There are other clauses (advance expiration date) still awaiting resolution of the European Court. In addition, the National Commission of Judicial Statistics has revealed that 98.3% of the 9,326 judgements issued last year by the Courts of First Instance (known as Floor Clauses’ courts), specialised in individual actions on general conditions.

Picasso’s Last Stand Saturday 24th March, BBC2, 21:00
Documentary revealing the untold story of the last decade of the great artist’s life, through the testimony of family and close friends - many of them the people he allowed into his private world in the 1960s. In these final extraordinary years, for the first time, as his health declined, Picasso faced damaging criticism of his work and intimate revelations about his bohemian lifestyle. And yet, in the midst of disaster, he rediscovered his revolutionary spirit with a creative surge that produced some of his most sexually frank and comic work. Exhibitions of the new style horrified and disappointed contemporaries. But now his biographer Sir John Richardson and granddaughter Diana Widmaier Picasso argue that this last enormous effort produced some of his greatest and most profound art: the stunning counter attack of a protean genius coming to terms with old age.
Reggie Yates meets people whose lives have been devastated by the Grenfell fire, hoping to piece together the human stories behind some of those lost in the tragedy. p. The physical n she discovers understanding
Filmed during the worst winter for the NHS on record, Hospital is the story of the health service in unprecedented times. For its third series, the award-winning programme moves to Nottingham University Hospitals, one of the country’s biggest and busiest Trusts. Gaining inside access to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital in January and February this year, this timely six-part documentary series brings us close to the issues and challenges that continually dominate the headlines. The series shows the impact of everincreasing demands on the NHS’s services, from the longest waiting times in A&E on record to the historic decision by NHS bosses to cancel all routine operations in January. In episode one, a huge influx of patients into the emergency department results in dozens of people lying on trollies waiting to be admitted. Cancelling all routine operations doesn’t solve all the problems in A&E: the hospital is still full. Across the Trust there are the equivalent of four full wards of patients who are fit enough to be discharged but who need supported care in the community. 86-year-old Mavis was admitted to hospital after a fall but her dementia means only certain nursing homes can look after her. A shortage of such places means she has been stuck in hospital for four weeks. She no longer needs any medical treatment, but until a place is found for her in a care home, she remains in hospital. 12-year-old Keilan’s operation has been scheduled in the middle of this winter crisis. He suffers from scoliosis, a severe curvature of the spine. The longer he waits for his operation, the more serious his condition becomes. Although paediatrics is supposed to be protected from cancellations, Keilan has been cancelled before due to a shortage of critical care beds. He has currently been waiting 47 weeks for his surgery. With winter pressures biting across the hospital, Keilan’s father Lee fears it will be cancelled yet again. Lee explains: “As time goes on, his curve has gone from 35 to 80 degrees in less than two years. It’s got to be done”. In the coming weeks, the cancellations escalate. Many of the hospital’s once bustling theatres grind to a halt. Surgeons such as orthopaedic consultant Peter James are left with little to do as hundreds of elective operations are cancelled. Peter explains: “We’re left largely at a loose end… feeling that we should be working… trying to find something to do”.

To celebrate the centenary of the Royal Air Force, actor Ewan McGregor and former RAF pilot Colin, his brother, take to the skies in some of the world’s most iconic planes. The brothers experience aerial combat at every stage of the RAF’s story, from the dawn of the dogfight in World War One, the triumph of the ‘The Few’ and the bravery of the ‘Bomber Boys’ in World War Two, through to the Cold War and right up to the supersonic jets of today. On the way they will meet some extraordinary men and women, explore the great moments such as The Battle of Britain and The Berlin Airlift, and will uncover little known stories of bravery and brilliance. It is a story of amazing machines and epic battles but above all it is the story of the men and women whose courage and ingenuity have been at the heart of the RAF for 100 years. Geoffrey Wellum, who fought in the Battle of Britain as an 18 year old, speaks with passion about what is meant to take on the German Airforce. Mary Ellis and Joy Lofthouse were two of the pioneering flyers of the Air Transport Auxiliary who delivered thousands of planes to frontline units in World War Two. Looking back on a breakthrough for equality born of necessity, these two feisty elderly ladies share their memories of their glamorous but dangerous role. Cold War aircrew like Jonny Tye and Martin Withers had the grim task of dropping the atom bomb and accepted their role knowing that if they ever had to carry out their orders it would be a one-way mission. David Morgan, who is the last RAF pilot to take part in a dogfight, talks with chilling clarity about the day he shot down two enemy aircraft over The Falkland Islands but also with humanity about how he has had to live with the personal and emotional consequences ever since. Finally today’s ground crew and pilots take Ewan and Colin on a supersonic flight in the Typhoon fighter, as they make their own all-too-real preparation for deployment to the skies over Syria and Iraq.

International Football Friendly Holland v England
ITV1, 19.30 Mark Pougatch hosts live as England continue their 2018 World Cup preparations against a Holland team recovering from their failure to qualify for this summer’s Finals in Russia at the Amsterdam Arena. In the first of four pre-tournament internationals that Gareth Southgate has to fine-tune his World Cup plans Harry Kane will lead England’s attack as they go in search of their first win against Holland since the famous 4-1 victory during Euro 96 at Wembley Stadium. Former Everton manager Ronald Koeman leads the Dutch into the match having taken over after Dick Advocaat’s failure to take his star-studded side to the tournament in Russia. Mark Pougatch is joined in the Netherlands by Ian Wright, Lee Dixon and former Dutch international, Patrick Kluivert - who scored the Holland goal in that 4-1 game - with commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle.

After four weeks of fierce competition in the heats, 56 amateur cooks have been whittled down to just 16. Now these talented cooks come together to cook off against each other across two shows. In this episode the amateurs are split into two groups - the blue group and the red group - with eight cooks in each. Both groups face a cook-off based on a brief given by John and Gregg. Their challenge is to create one dish inspired by a personal or family-favourite recipe. After cooking, John and Gregg decide who is good enough to continue in the competition. The blue group are the first to cook. In one hour and 30 minutes they must hold their nerve to deliver a dish that stands out from the crowd and prove to the judges that they have a future in the competition. However, they won’t find out their fate just yet, as they have to wait until the red group have cooked before John and Gregg choose who stays and who goes.

George Alagiah explores the fascinating history of Queen Elizabeth II and the Commonwealth. He discovers how the role of heading this family of nations has affected the Queen as she grew and developed, both as a monarch and as a person. His journey starts in Tonga, one of the furthest-flung stops on the Queen’s first Commonwealth tour in 1953. From there, George’s Commonwealth tour takes him to Australia, Ghana, India and South Africa. In each country he discovers how the shy young Queen grew into a monarch who commands respect, exploring moments of triumph, diplomacy, challenge and political intrigue. Gathering testimony from people who have met the Queen across the years and from experts who have followed her journey, George builds a picture of how deftly the Queen has played her role as head of the Commonwealth. Her daughter Princess Anne also talks about the Queen’s role as a woman in a maledominated world.

Greg and Marie have been married for nineteen years, when, seemingly out of the blue, Marie walks out on him and her three children – the last taboo of parenting. Episode One, told from Greg’s perspective, follows Greg and their kids as they struggle to comprehend their mother’s actions. Greg tries to maintain normality as he juggles work at Farrell Motors, raising his children and coping with the trials and tribulations of dating again. But will he ever be able to move on when he’s trapped in the past? This touching and intriguing drama will take audiences on a rollercoaster of ever changing emotions and allegiances. Multiple timeframes, viewpoints and flashbacks tell Greg and Marie’s story and force viewers to confront their own truths. How can two people that loved each other become so opposed? One of the biggest TV hits of last year is back for a brand new full frontal extravaganza and this time it’s live from Sheffield, the home of the original Full Monty strip. In The Real Full Monty: Live, Ashley Banjo and Alexander Armstrong put together an even bigger and bolder show in their balls out commitment to raising awareness of men’s cancers. A brand new cast of male celebrities - TV Presenter Jeff Brazier, Former Rugby International Ugo Monye, TOWIE star James Argent, The Wanted’s Tom Parker, Ex-footballer John Hartson, Celebrity Chef Ainsley Harriot, and former Eastender Johnny Partridge - will share their personal stories and learn how to shed their iconic security guard uniforms to stir up a storm on stage in Sheffield and inspire even more men to make vital checks that could save lives.

Fun at the beach!
OUR next event at the refuge is on 14th April at 1pm. Again, our focus is on the dogs in our care, so we would like to ask our friends and supporters to help us make a dog's day, by joining us in a walk down to the beach. The dogs love the very rare walk and attention that they crave, so please, please make a dog's day and come along. Maybe a packet of treats would be appreciated as well. Cakes and drinks will be on offer, on return to the refuge. Please remember that saving one dog will not change the world, but, for that one dog, the world will change forever. So please remember to adopt a dog, instead of buying one. Assistance required
Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the north-bound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Cats Welfare News DID you know that licking keeps cats' fur clean and smooth, and also cools them in hot weather? It helps to keep fur waterproof, and fluffs it up to keep them warm in the cold weather. If a cat hurts himself, licking the cut or scratch cleans it, and helps it feel better. Cats love it when you scratch behind their ears, because it is a sensitive area that can't, easily, be reached. They can't lick themselves behind the ears, but can clean in this area with their front paws. Cats sometimes roll over when they see you; this is probably because it's the friendliest thing a cat can do. It's their way of saying “I trust you”. Cats press against things with their paws, because this is the way that kittens stimulate the flow of milk from their mother, using one front paw, then the other. This is called “kneading”. Cats don't always land on their feet, but they do have better balance than most animals. When a cat spreads out its back and front
Cat facts
legs, it falls more slowly, the body acting as a parachute. The tail can also help with balance. Cats climb trees, mainly, for protection from other animals, such as dogs. House cats usually like to climb up on high areas such as a bookshelf or refrigerator. They have very strong hind muscles that allow them to get to these lofty places. Pet cats feel as though their gardens are their own, special places. A cat likes to check out what other animals are doing in their territory,
and, once they have done that, they like to come back inside the house, where it is warm and safe. That's why they always seem to want to come straight back in, immediately after being let out! **Private Adoption Manda, a stunning, 18-month-old female, is looking for her forever home. Buying and transferring a car By Emma
from Motorworld
MANY people give conflicting advice as to what is actually needed when buying a car.
Here, we put to bed some rumours and errors, and state exactly what is required, and what both the buyer and seller need to do. We will firstly look at the sellers. Obviously, if selling privately, they must advertise or spread their request by word of mouth. If selling to a garage, or partexchanging, this is cut out. Once a buyer is found, then the whole process starts. For selling to an individual,
you will need a copy of their NIE/Residencia or DNI (just a copy, in this case). If the person only holds a NIE or Residencia, then a copy of an in-date passport is also required. If the passport is out of date, then an up-todate copy must be obtained. The forms that must be signed by the seller are the contrato de compra-venta and the application form for Tráfico (solicitud de transmisión de vehículo). The seller should also provide proof that the current year’s road taxes (RODAJE or Impuesto de tración de mecánica) have been paid, because this information may sometimes not have reached Tráfico, and, if it is shown as unpaid, a transfer cannot be completed. Town Halls advise Tráfico of outstanding road taxes. This is a way of getting their money, because it effectively blocks a transfer until such time as that debt is cleared.
A simple check first can make this a hassle-free process. The purchaser must have an NIE to complete the transfer, but some garages MAY allow the purchase on a passport number, provided an NIE is being applied for, swiftly. The buyer will need to sign the contrato de compra-venta, the solicitud de transmisión de vehículo, the Modelo 620, and an authorisation for Hacienda. If someone else is doing the transfer on his or her behalf, an authorisation for Tráfico needs to be signed. They will have to supply copies of their documents for the tax and the originals for Tráfico, i.e. passport, NIE/Residencia/DNI. Tráfico will not, under any circumstances, accept photocopies for the buyer, but notarised copies are accepted. If the transfer is being undertaken by a gestoria who is registered with the colegio de
gestorias, and processed via the colegio de gestorias, copies are accepted, once the gestor has seen the originals. Tax is payable on all purchases, and, whilst it is normally the buyer’s responsibility, it is in the interest of the seller to ensure the transfer out of their name is completed, and often the cost is split. The current rate of tax is 5.5% of the official valuation, which often has no bearing on the price being paid. You can find the official valuation at www.aeat.es. which is partly available in English, or by calling 012. In order to obtain an accurate valuation, you will need the exact make, model, the number of doors, original date of first registration together with potencia fiscal and engine size, all of which is normally available on the car’s Ficha Técnica. If a car is over 10 years old, the rules are slightly
different, and fixed taxes apply. Cars 0-1000cc: tax due is 40 euros 1001-1500 cc: tax due is 70 euros 1501-2000cc: tax due is 115 euros If the car is over ten years of age, and the engine is bigger than 2000 cc (i.e. 2 ltr), then the normal rules apply. Before buying a car privately, it is important to check that there are no embargos or debts on it, and Motorworld are able to do this for you, as are other, legally-registered companies. If you do not do this, and find at Tráfico there is an embargo on the car, it can be very difficult to sort out. Sometimes it’s not cost effective to do so, rendering the car worthless and unsaleable. When using the services of someone to do this for you, they must be a Registered Tráfico Collaborator or Gestoria, registered with the colegio de gestorias.
Kids’ rooms
By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic
THE kids’ room … what can I say? It’s definitely a tricky one! We have to come to terms with the fact that, no matter how much we try and take every square foot into consideration to create a tidy and organised space, it will never be the perfect picture we were intent on achieving. The simple reason is that where there’s
kids, there’s chaos! The goal that parents want to aim for is that the bedroom is uncluttered, and, more importantly, easy to keep tidy. If you provide a space that’s easy to maintain, that’s one less excuse they can use on you! For this, you need hardwearing furniture. Kids don’t have the patience for flimsy drawers, and they pull them out carelessly, breaking anything that is breakable. So, for a child’s bedroom, I choose good-quality furniture over fashionable, occasional pieces, every time. The fact they grow so
quickly is something else to consider. It is all very exciting becoming a parent for the first time, and you want everything to be so special, but forking out on a Winnie the Pooh bedroom set is not very practical. In a couple of years’ time, you will need to change it. If you want to go with a theme, work with the soft furnishings - curtains, blinds and bed covers - because these sorts of things are easily changed. When it comes to the nursery, having things to hand is a good tip. I didn’t go mad buying all the baby gadgets, because most of it is unnecessary, and takes
up too much precious space. The one thing I do recommend for a baby, furniture-wise, is a changing/bathing table. Your back will definitely thank you for it! From babies, they go on to become toddlers, which is challenging, to say the least! At this stage, you want to create a fun playspace, always bearing safety in mind. This is when your child is learning to explore, and doing things by him/herself. They mostly do what they aren’t supposed
to, like climbing up on pieces of furniture, and pulling on anything in their reach. They say a good way to check any safety hazards is by getting down on all fours, and seeing things from their height and perspective. At this stage, you should also play on the fact that you can influence your child with what you surround them. For instance, you can encourage them to read by creating a reading area, or just by having their books on show, rather than
hidden in a cupboard. Do it while you can, because, as the years go by, they will soon want to have more input as to how they would like their own bedroom. And so they should, as it should reflect one’s personality, kids included! Then, after kids, it’s teenagers. As a parent, I haven’t got to this stage yet, and, as much as I’m dreading it, I was once an awkward teenager myself, and remember my bedroom being my sacred place. Teenagers spend a lot of hours in their rooms, especially during these times of technology in which we live. I would say that most teenagers spend an unhealthy amount of time locked away in their rooms, so this is a great time to revamp, and make a space in which they can grow. Make the most of the area, and take into consideration their needs. A good work/ study area is essential, as well as storage, and make the most of the wardrobe, by making every inch count. But my key tip on this stage is not to make it too comfortable, as adulthood is just around the corner; making it too good may encourage them to never move out!

Holiday choices for Tenerife residents!
from Tenerife Sunshine
IN the age of connectivity, travelling has become cheap and easy. Tenerife is, nowadays, the main European, touristic hub. Every year, millions of people come to visit our beautiful island, attracted by the “world’s best weather”, and the spectacular landscapes. But what about all of us, living and thriving in Tenerife all year round? Where are the holidays for the people living in a holiday place? Last year, my personal choice was a Canarian cruise, as described, previously, in the Canarian Weekly, although, with the Island’s two international airports and two touristic ports, the possibilities are far from being limited. If you are residents with a green NIE number, there is very good news for you. In 2017, the resident
37 CW
discount for flights and ferries between the Islands increased to a muchappreciated 75%! If you haven’t seen the other Islands yet, this is the perfect time. The Canary Islands are considered to be a micro-continent, with great diversity: El Hierro, the wild favourite among scuba divers, with its volcanic sea beds and pelagic life, such as pilot whales, whale sharks, mantas and dolphins. La Palma, with its Carnival, the Laurisilva forests, the observatory and the starry nights. La Gomera,
favourite among excursionists, with the Garajonay national park. The eastern Islands, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, with the white beaches and turquoise bays, a paradise for water-sport enthusiasts and beach lovers. Last, but not least, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, the bigger sisters, where you can finish your days of shopping or excursions with a delicious traditional dinner, tasting the amazing Canarian cheeses and wines. Standing out among the mid-range destinations is the Spanish peninsula; all
the major cities are reachable, with just a few hours of flying from Tenerife, and a few euros, with discounts of up to 50% for residents. Dear Old Europe still offers incomparable riches; take a stroll in Barcelona old town to admire the genius of Gaudi’s modernism and Dali’s surrealism, and the unfinished cathedral of the Sagrada Familia with its four, mystical faces. And Madrid, the “Gran Capital”; Malaga, the city of culture, and, with just a few more euros, even the beautiful Portuguese cities of Porto and Lisbon. If you are looking for a
taste of the tropics, the islands of Cape Verde are well connected, and easily reachable from Tenerife. Cape Verde is a small, African archipelago with white beaches, transparent waters and good weather, all year round. And Morocco, sometimes underestimated, offering incomparable natural beauty, and the legacy of a millenary tradition. It is important to plan your holiday well, especially to those places that have, just recently, opened their doors to tourism, to avoid surprises capable of turning the holiday of a lifetime into an experience to forget. A reputable travel agency can help you choose your dream vacation, taking care of all the hassles related to travelling, and leaving you with only the pleasure of your holiday. With more than 13 years of experience in the travel industry, Tenerife Sunshine is the travel agency of choice for all our resident and nonresident friends. www.tenerifesunshine.com

THE benefits of apple cider vinegar have long been known. For centuries, people have been using it as both a food and a medicine, for themselves and their pets. Since 400 BC, Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, and others, have used vinegar, either on its own or mixed with honey, as an energising tonic and a healing elixir. More recently, the health benefits of apple cider vinegar have been promoted by many wellknown authors. In the US, Dr DC Jarvis, a Vermont country doctor, noted that apple cider vinegar was a respected home remedy, used by many Vermonters to successfully treat a number of common ailments, and nagging aches and pains. He was so impressed that he went on to write a book about his observations and experimentations with home remedies, especially apple cider vinegar, and its beneficial effects on both people and farm animals. Apple cider vinegar is a completely-natural product, resulting from the fermentation of apple juice to hard apple cider, followed by a second fermentation to apple cider vinegar. It retains all the nutritional goodness of the apples from which it was made, plus it is fortified with the extra acids and enzymes produced during the two fermentation steps. It's the sum of all these ingredients that gives apple cider vinegar

Just the tonic! its amazing health benefits. Benefits include many external uses as well. It can be used to soothe sunburns and insect bites, to make your hair shine, and to treat dandruff, just to mention a few. It fits in well with today's trend towards eating natural, healthy, whole ingredients, and away from the over-consumption of highly-processed, convenience foods, which are depleted of much of their original nutrients. But beware, because not all apple cider vinegars are created equal! Many commercial varieties have been pasteurised, filtered, refined or distilled, in order to make the product look good, and thereby more appealing to the general public. Unfortunately, this extra processing destroys much of the healthy goodness, as well as many of the apple-cider benefits that were in the product in the first place. The best type of apple cider vinegar to use is one made from cold-pressed, organicallygrown, whole apples, to which no
chemicals or preservatives have been added, is unpasteurised, and which contains the “mother of vinegar. The "mother of vinegar" is a natural, gelatinous substance, formed during the last fermentation step. This type of wholesome apple cider vinegar can be readily found in most health-food stores, and can be conveniently purchased online. Alternatively, you can brew your own at home. It's surprisingly easy to do. Weight loss Another, major, apple cider vinegar benefit is weight loss. Although no one is sure how it works, it has helped many people lose weight. Most apple cider vinegar weight-loss home remedies call for the taking of one or two teaspoons in a glass of water, before each meal. Whichever way you take it, don't expect a rapid weight loss. The weight will be lost gradually,
as it should be, to allow the body's fat cells to adjust to their new size. No one is really sure how apple cider vinegar works to promote weight loss, but there is no shortage of theories. It is generally believed that the nutrients, enzymes and organic acids cause weight reduction by acting as an appetite suppressant, as a result of increasing the body's metabolic rate, as well as reducing water retention, and by helping you maintain a feeling of well being. Recent medical research has highlighted the connection between levels of insulin and weight loss. That, coupled with the fact that vinegar is known to slow the rise of blood sugar after a meal, leads to the suggestion that the taking of apple cider vinegar with a meal reduces the amount of insulin required to process the meal, resulting in weight loss.
Animals love apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar benefits for our pets, from cats, dogs, pigeons and parrots to cows and horses, are numerous. It can be used as a daily health tonic, to deter insects such as mosquitoes, fleas and tics, and to relieve skin conditions. Cooking with apple cider vinegar Apple cider vinegar is an amazingly-versatile, cooking ingredient. It adds a tangy taste to many drinks, and deepens the flavours of numerous foods. It's important to note that vinegar is a major ingredient in most condiments. Mayonnaise and tomato ketchup account for more than 10% of the vinegar production in America. Other uses! Besides the apple cider vinegar benefits for health, and its use for weight loss, pet care and cooking, i t can also double up as a non-toxic, household c l e a n e r, deodoriser and disinfectant.

A slap in the face! Numancia 2 CD Tenerife 0 By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
SOMETIMES, you just know it’s not your day. Take this Tenerife setback, in which the first goal went in, off Aveldaño’s face, and the second was scored by a Numancia player born in La Laguna! The first defeat under coach Joseba Etzeberria could have been down to Alberto and Carlos Ruiz being out, suspended, or to the freezing weather. But, in truth, Tenerife were poor on the night. The suspensions and ongoing injuries meant another reshuffle in the starting line-up. Casadesus joined Longo up front, and Vitolo was back in midfield, and wearing the captain’s armband. Their first-half performance didn’t have the drive or confidence of recent weeks. But Tenerife created plenty of chances, starting with a poor Vitolo effort. He failed to strike the ball cleanly,
causing it to trickle wide. Then Luis Perez hit a crossfield pass to Italian Longo, and the team’s top scorer headed the ball down, only for the keeper to save well. Guillermo had the first chance for the hosts, but
his shot was well-taken by Dani Hernandez, even though he didn’t get a clear sight of it. Alex Mula was not at his buzzing best on the left wing, and, when he did get the ball in a strong position,
Women’s Volleyball
Arona dish up seconds FEW people would have backed Arona Tenerife Sur to hit second place in their first season in Spain’s elite league. But that’s where they stand right now! The Los Cristianos-based team have improved steadily all season, and their latest 3-0 home victory, against VP Madrid, elevated them to their highest position. A powerful opening ensured the first set went 25-16, and it was followed by scores of 27-25 and 25-20. There is just one match left in the league season, Arona travelling to 7 Palmas Gran Canaria tomorrow (Saturday) and, naturally, keen to complete the double over them. League leaders Logrono cannot be caught now, but the Arona ladies have that winning habit, and will want to finish in style.
he looped it high over the Numancia bar. Yet Tenerife deserved a reward for their most creative move. Longo put the perfect weight on a ball to Acosta, whose curling shot was heading for the top corner, before the keeper denied him with a brilliant, fingertip save. But Tenerife dropped down a gear after the first halfhour. Alberto’s controlling midfield play was sorely missed, and Longo looked ill at ease. Vitolo showed his frustration with a wild hack on Guillermo’s legs, which earned him a booking. Numancia came out for the second half with a more attacking plan. Dani earned his keep with a close-up stop in the box, and he halfcleared another chance that Aveldaño booted upfield. But home pressure paid off after 59 minutes. Mateu fired the ball in from the left, Nacho helped it on, and it smacked Aveldaño in the face and rebounded over the goal-line. The pitch had been cleared of snow before the kick-off, and the players’ icy breath was better than any thermometer. But conceding an own-goal stung Aveldaño harder than the thud of the ball had. Tayron was brought on for Tenerife to replace the ineffective Casadesus, but he didn’t make much impact. The ref had earned his infamy with Ten-
erife fans in last season’s decisive, play-off final, away leg. But he showed leniency in not punishing another badly-timed Vitolo tackle, because a second booking would have ended his match. Wisely, Malbasic replaced Vitolo soon after the incident, but it was hardly a game-changer. Pere Mulla missed a sitter for Numancia at the post, putting the ball the wrong side of the woodwork. The last Tenerife throw of the dice was Suso, coming on for Alex Mula, which brought a spike in away activity, Luis Milla swerving a shot just high of the bar with a decent attempt. But, with just over 10 minutes left, another Numancia break found the Tenerife defence pulled out of shape, and Gutierrez had a free tap-in to double the home-side’s lead. As the game drew to a close, Tayron whisked a ball into Longo, which was cleared for a corner, while Malbasic blasted a shot sky-high. Tenerife’s defeat stretched their gap to the promotion play-offs to six points, making a tough task even more difficult. But there are still 11 league games left, so the light is flickering. Home against Lorca on Sunday at 7pm is another must-win clash. But aren’t they all?

CD Marino FOR the second, successive, home game, Marino had to settle for a 2-2 scoreline in a game they should have won at a canter. UA Guimar made the short trip up the TF1 motorway, but they moved into the fast lane after a slow start. Marino made tactical changes up front, Yassine playing out on the right, with Pedro and Diego breaking from deep, rather than having a front man. It gave Guimar defensive problems about who marked who, but the downside was the loss of Yassine’s aerial power in front of goal. When Diego and Yassine linked up after 10 minutes, Pedro charged through, but his shot went over the bar. Guimar nearly had some joy from a free-kick, Rayco floating in a long, drifting ball. But home keeper David plucked it out of the air. Josua, who threatened for

had to make another pointblank save. Eduardo then spurned another chance to stretch the lead, firing wide from a corner, and Marino knew they had to stage a fightback. Zeben went close, while Nathan and Diego linked well, only to be caught in an offside trap. Finally, in the last minute of play, Marino pushed forward, with everyone pitching in. A Ricky freekick found Tato, who made no mistake with a pin-point header to earn Marino a share of the spoils. But four points have slipped away in the last, two, home games, and Marino stay rooted in 12th spot. And they have no game this weekend, because of the odd number of teams in their division.
launched his shot too high. But, in the 54th minute, Guimar took advantage of some uncertainty in the home defence. A ball across the face of the goal wasn’t cut out, leaving Marco to score his team’s second goal. Then, from a corner, Guimar came close to a third goal, but David was equal to the high ball, pawing it away to safety. Marco, who was cutting loose, broke down the left, but he shot into the side-netting. A Marino free-kick, from a good position, was wasted, because Zeben struck it into the defensive wall, as the team became frustrated. Guimar were looking comfortable, and David
firm, to deny him. Prince, who has made a home for himself in Marino’s midfield, is an excellent ball-winner, and a tough competitor… as Guimar discovered! Marino’s opening goal, on the half-hour, was wellworked. Pedro caught Guimar out with a quicklytaken free-kick, the ball falling nicely for the incoming Nami to dispatch into the visitors’ net. Marco Siverio didn’t react quite as quickly at the other end to a Guimar free-kick. But he made amends, just before the break, with a flicked header from a Josua cross, to level the scores. Marino were fastest out of the trap for the second half. Saavedra set up Zeben, who

Nipping at their heels are Mad Hatters and Loch Inn B, who need to take all six points from their final two games to have any hope. Scruffy’s looking smart! SCRUFFY Macs, in their penultimate game of the season, had one hand on the league title after breezing past Palms Pool Bar with an 8-0 victory. Telf had a superb, two-dart finish of 110, whereas Tom’s highlights of the night were the tasty sausages! The Tavern A also suffered an 8-0 scoreline against visiting Phoenix Bar, who showed no mercy with their impressive finishing, and Del Boy’s 180 was followed by the home team’s Pete, weighing in with his own maximum. Picasso’s welcomed Spear Chuckers, and, despite two top scores by Rob, the visitors were taken to the final game. A beer-goggled Chairman then stepped up to the oche and surprised everyone, including himself, with a fantastic finish, to take the trebles and a 5-3 win. Boothen, who pulled out all their experience to record a 5-3 win over Pas O Nadas A, with
Sam hitting a 180, are hoping for a big swing in results to have any chance of topping the league, at the end of Friday’s games. Sundowners were, again, unlucky, as they lost out 5-3 against Ourplace Playboys, while Emerald Lounge hosted The Loch-In A, in yet another close game. It swung either way all evening, until the visitors finally claimed a 5-3 scoreline. In Division 2’s battle at the top, Sandys took a narrow advantage when they won the threesome game, and the points, against closest rivals Legends. This means the Legends need a win to secure the title outright on Friday. Some amazing, highquality darts were thrown, when Marilyns B played host to Nauta Nomads, with ton-plus after ton-plus scores being recorded. But Alex recorded the night’s best, with a spectacular 147 checkout! Bar Leones could muster only three play-

sealing their fate with scores of 16-25 and 1925. And winning the other two sections, each 13-12, was nowhere near enough to compensate for the heavy damage. There are not many silver linings, but at least Polish star Mateusz Ponitka is still firing on all cylinders. He led the way with 15 points at Valencia.

Defiant Pili earns draw Valencia 0 Egatesa Granadilla 0
BRING on the leaders! That’s the message from Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife, following this hardearned draw in Valencia.
The big problem for Tenerife was finishing their three-point shots from open play. Just two of their 22 attempts dropped through the hoop, and that really hurt them. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife hope to
bounce back at home against Joventut at 8pm, to improve on their ninth placing in the league. Josh Agoknon, their N i g e r i a n -A m e r i c a n , should return from injury to give the squad a boost.
Tomorrow (Saturday), at 7.30pm, they welcome table-toppers Atletico Madrid to San Isidro, and they’re ready to claim another big scalp. The Valencia point keeps Granadilla tucked in fourth place, thanks to some fine saves from keeper Pili Gonzalez. But there was plenty of pressure at the other end, as well. Pisco was denied by the home keeper, after the best move of the first half, and Ivory Coast forward Ange Koko put a second-half chance over the bar. Granadilla have already beaten secondplaced Barcelona, and third-ranked Bilbao, at home this season. A crowd of well over 1,000 is expected for the Atletico game, with many more enjoying live coverage on the Gol TV channel.
