Hit-run killer faces insulting sentence Continued from Front If fact, legally, the maximum term allowed is under 6 years, and that will surely infuriate the distraught parents of nine-year-old Carter,, especially after the behaviour of the driver, who scarpered with his passenger, a fellow-Latvian aged 34, without even finding out whether the youngster was still alive. In fact, poor Carter, who had been shopping with his father, Stuart, and his partner, Clair, was in cardiac arrest when the ambulance reached the scene, outside Gran Sur Shopping centre. And, after restarting his heart, paramedics took him straight to Candelaria Hospital. Tragically, his injuries were so severe that he died the next day, on Good Friday. But CCTV footage of the car, posted on social media, led to the driver being identified within two days. The two men, held on remand, were in court on Tuesday, when witnesses

detailed the hit-andrun, and Judge Daniel Alamo ordered a full reconstruction of events, at the scene of the incident. Judge Alamo has now ruled that there is sufficient, preliminary evidence to charge the 39-year-old with causing death by negligence, and failing to stop to assist Carter at the scene. The driver’s passenger, a 34-year-old man, also from Latvia, has been released on bail. But he will also stand trial for failing to assist the victim of a road accident. Police investigators had quizzed several people, after seizing a red Alfa

Romeo, believed to be the vehicle involved, which had a damaged front headlamp. It was spotted last Friday afternoon by an off-duty police officer, near the scene of the crime, and led to the Latvians’ arrest. The youngster’s heartbroken father, Stuart, said: “Carter was our world, with a smile that touched so many hearts. He was a football-crazy kid, whose loss we can’t describe. “We would like to thank everyone, from the bottom of our hearts, for their support, kind words and generosity. Rest easy, Daddy’s wee superstar.” Earlier this week, Carter’s mum, 31-year-old Carlene O’Connor, paid tribute to her “smart, fun-loving” little boy. She said: “On Thursday, I got the unthinkable phone call that every parent dreads, telling me that my beautiful son had been involved in a tragic accident, while on holiday with his dad and family.

Tragedy house is burgled

THE Guaza house of a family trio, who were murdered by their adopted son last Friday, has been burgled by thoughtless delinquents. A missing safe, thought to have been holding cash and jewellery, has now been found, empty, outside the borough of Arona, alongside a family car they also stole. In the wake of the horrifying events which occurred there a fortnight ago, when the unbalanced son, 23-year-old Ricardo Ortega, stabbed his parents and grandad to death, the home’s lack of security was seen as an open invitation to the thieves. They forced their way into the three-storey house, in the middle of a Guaza banana plantation, unnoticed, apparently. The break-in was discovered on

Tuesday, when Guardia Civil investigators entered the property to take more prints and photographs for further investigation. The officers are convinced they know where it is heading, yet, it is understood that the robbery had no connection with the 23rd March tragedy, for which Ricardo is being held in Tenerife 2 Penitentiary Prison until his trial, which could take up to two years. Initially. when the ambulance team arrived at the scene in Guaza, along with the Local Police, they discovered the three bodies. Protocol dictated that they inform the Guardia Civil, who took over the case. From the onset, officers suspected that the murderer was the person who alerted them in the first place. And, a few hours later, when they interviewed Ricardo, he soon confessed to the murders.

“My heart sank. I didn’t want to believe what I was hearing… my world instantly fell apart. To think that my baby boy had gained his angel wings, just as his wee life was really beginning.” Carlene said Carter was a “football-mad” Liverpool fan, who played for his local 18th Newtownabbey youth team in Monkstown, and attended all the Northern Ireland international matches with his dad. “He was just the funniest, most wonderful boy; smart, fun-loving and caring. He had the biggest heart and the most gorgeous smile.” A book of condolence has been opened at Carter’s Abbots Cross Primary, while family friend and funding organiser Charlene Dinnen has now raised around £11,500 towards funeral costs, after launching an appeal on crowdfunding site Just Giving. She said: “Carter was a happy-go-lucky, wee boy

who just loved his footy, taking after his daddy and grandad. I can’t even put into words how heartbreaking this is. Sleep tight, wee man.” Meanwhile, the local Newtownabbey community is said to be “reeling”, and a flood of condolences and tributes to the popular schoolboy have been posted on social media. Carter’s local school wrote on Facebook that staff, children and parents were “deeply saddened” by the “sudden loss” of their P5 pupil Carter Carson. The names of the hit-andrun pair, said to be in the construction industry, have not yet been revealed. But Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido highlighted the importance of networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in helping to solve crimes. “Public co-operation has, again, been fundamental. Thank you all for your help,” Zoido tweeted on Easter Sunday.

LONDON’S shocking murder rate has overtaken that of New York City for the first time ever, following the deaths of more than 50 people in the capital this year. February marked the first month in history that London had more murders than the American city, with a total of 15. And, last month, there were no fewer than 22 London murders, which is likely to match, if not beat, the relative New York figures. The killing spree has continued into April, with an unbelievable five fatalities in the first week, sparked off on Sunday night when an unnamed youngster, thought to be 20, was fatally stabbed after leaving a Wandsworth bar. It marked London’s 12th murder in a 19-day period, and a 21-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of murder, is currently in custody. But that wasn’t all! There were four further killings in the capital by Wednesday, including that of a burglar. He was stabbed by a man, defending himself and his wife, as well as their home. Incredibly, the householder has been arrested on suspicion of murder! According to a Sunday Times report, New York City’s murder statistics have decreased by 87% since the 1990s. Meanwhile, London’s rate has grown by around 40% in just three years, and that total does not include deaths caused by terrorist attacks. Although New York featured nearly double the number of murders than

London’s horrific murder-rate tops New York figures

London last year, experts are concerned that the gap is closing steadily. Officials are also worried about the increase in fatal stabbings, fearing there is a dangerous surge in knife crime. Last year, there was a total of 80 fatal stabbings in the capital, which was the most in almost a decade. And official figures show that 2017 was the worst year for knife deaths among young people, since 2002 at least. Some 46 people, aged 25 or under, were stabbed to death in London, up by 21 compared with the previous year, according to police figures. Lyndon Davis, 18, was found

dead from a single stab wound, in Chadwell Heath, on 14th March. Father-of-two Tyrone Silcott, 42, who died from knife wounds on 18th March after a St Patrick’s Day party, was the oldest victim. That was, until the following day, when Balbir Johal, 48, died after being stabbed in Southall. The next day, 41-year-old Jermaine Johnson died of knife wounds in Walthamstow. Then, 50-year-old David Potter was found stabbed to death in a property on Tooting High Street on Monday, 26th March. Amaan Shakoor, at 16, was the youngest victim of all. The Leyton teenager, who

was left critically ill, died on Tuesday after being shot in the face in Walthamstow. Jacob Whittingham, charity head of programmes for Fight for Peace, told the Sunday Times: “What’s scary about London is the randomness of the crime. “With young people in London, you have no idea if and when you may be the victim of a violent crime, that’s why they feel the need to carry weapons.” Of great concern, also, is the sharp rise in youngsters being stabbed to death there, despite Scotland Yard stepping up police patrols, its use of suppression and enforcement tactics, carrying out more stop-

Franco era definitely is a thing of the past THE Balearic Islands’ Parliament has approved measures to do away with Franco-era symbols and references in the region. The Law of Democratic Memory mandates the removal of all monuments, icons and symbols placed on the islands during the Francisco Franco dictatorship. It also annuls all political sentences handed down to the dictator’s opponents, during, and after, the Spanish Civil War. But proposals of up to

150,000-euro fines for failing to remove the symbols were not accepted during the meeting. The passing of the law came as the body unanimously approved the so-called Grave Law in May 2016. That

law requires authorities to locate and identify the 2,000 people, who are believed to have disappeared during the conflict and dictatorship. The Parliament also resolved this month to investigate the alleged murder of

52 people, committed during the war’s first months, August 1936 to March 1937, as possible crimes against humanity. Bartomeu Barcelo, the Balearic Islands’ Superior Prosecutor, said that the authority, in principle, was prevented from undertaking the investigation because of the 1977 Amnesty Law. Mallorca and Ibiza were among the first areas of Spain to fall to Franco’s nationalist forces during the conflict, which resulted in the deaths of an estimated 250,000 to one million people.

and-search incidents, more weapon sweeps and other activity on the streets. Sophie Linden, London’s Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, said City Hall was “prioritising tackling this violence”, adding: “We’re not pretending there isn’t a problem in London, but we will get on top of it.” But Conservative London Assembly Member Shaun Bailey has called on the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to “step up and deal with the serious issue”. Tottenham MP David Lammy believes the capital is “in crisis” but, he said, it appeared that many politicians did not care about the issue. “I’ve heard nothing from the Home Secretary,” he added. “I’ve heard nothing from the Mayor, and that’s unacceptable. “Is life in my constituency worth less than life in other parts of the country?”

Youngster is electrocuted A GERMAN youngster is in a critical condition, after being electrocuted while sitting on an indoor attraction at Gran Canaria shopping centre in Playa del Ingles. The six-year-old German girl climbed on to a mechanical horse ride while she was wet, and, immediately, suffered an electric shock. She was left with burns to her left forearm, where the charge had entered her body, and to her right leg, where it exited. The child was rendered unconscious immediately, and her grandfather carried her to the nearby Red Cross base, where officers began CPR straight away. An emergency ambulance arrived swiftly, and the girl, once stabilised, was transferred to the island’s University Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

Germans keen to see back of Puigdemont GERMAN prosecutors have asked that former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont, who was arrested there last month, be extradited to Spain. The request was filed on Tuesday to a regional court in the town of Schleswig-Holstein, to send Puigdemont to Madrid. He faces charges of rebellion in Spain, for organising an unauthorised, proindependence referendum, and the misuse of public funds, as well as sedition, which could lead to a prison sentence of up to 30 years. German prosecutors also requested that the Higher Regional Court in Schleswig-Holstein hold Puigdemont in prison for the duration of the proceedings, for fear that he might escape. He has been held in nearby

Neumunster prison since being arrested on 25th March. That is when he was intercepted by German police while travelling back to Belgium, after he had left the country to host a series of talks in Finland. But his arrest triggered a wave of mass protests in Catalunya, leading to demonstrations and violence, as police intervened. Puigdemont, the separatist leader, fled to Belgium in exile after Mariano Rajoy dissolved the Catalan parliament. The Spanish Prime Minister also placed the region under direct rule from Madrid, following the October referendum. Spain, which issued a European arrest warrant, had been in close contact with German authorities in an attempt to capture Puigdemont. But for a European arrest warrant to be valid, and for the extradition request to be fulfilled, the charges must have a pun-

ishable equivalent, under German law. The rebellion charge is not punishable in the German criminal code. But the state prosecutor said this could be equated with high treason, so a “word-for-word conformance”, between Spanish and German laws, is not required legally. A statement from German prosecutors said the charge of rebellion “contains, in essence, the accusation of calling an unconstitutional referendum, despite violent riots that could be expected”. It could take days for the Schleswig-Holstein court to decide whether to extradite the former president, and the conclusion is not yet clear. Puigdemont’s lawyers, who filed an appeal, have called on the German Government to intervene. But that government insists that it is a matter, solely, for the courts. Authorities have 60 days to make a decision.

NEWS IN BRIEF Driver kills British cyclist

A BRITISH cyclist died, instantly, after being struck by a suspected drink-driver in Menorca.

It happened at around 11am on Easter Sunday while the 47-year-old unnamed man was pedalling from the sleepy village of Alcaufar to Sant Lluis. The driver, from the UK, and suspected of being under the influence of alcohol, was arrested and is being held in police custody. The Guardia Civil have sent a report to a magistrate, to investigate the tragic incident. A Foreign Office spokeswoman, said: “We have offered bereavement advice to the family, following the death.”

Things go better with…

A BRITISH holiday-maker, believed to be drunk, was held by Spanish police after stealing a Coca Cola lorry in Benidorm.

Footage, shot by one of the delivery men, shows the unnamed man shouting in English, while being pinned down by an officer, as pedestrians look on. He is said to have made off in the vehicle, while the driver and his colleague were making a delivery, before crashing the lorry into a parked car. The delivery man added: “This drunken foreigner stole our lorry, and everyone is watching. We called the police and pulled him out before they arrived. It was just unbelievable.” The culprit refused to take a breathalyser test before he was taken away, but, as he protested, one of the police officers said, in English: “Don’t move a bit, buddy!” Lorenzo Martinez, Benidorm’s Security Councillor, told local press that the dramatic incident “shows again how effective our police are”.

Trash man’s organic rescue

A HOMELESS man, who plummeted into an underground rubbish bin on the Costa del Sol, was rescued by firefighters.

Medics confirmed that the 60-year-old suffered bruising, but was, otherwise, unharmed. The poor man plunged several metres into the pit, which houses the organic waste, and his rescuers believe he was trying to search through the rubbish inside. The subterranean recycling bins, also known as ecological islands, are a common sight in much of Spain.

Stranded migrants saved by a smart ferry captain

THE Volcán del Teide ferry, owned by the Armas company, came across a small vessel, seemingly stranded in open waters, while sailing on its regular route, from Huelva to Arrecife, in Lanzarote. Once it was spotted, the ferry captain decided to turn the ferry around to check whether there was anyone aboard. And, to his surprise, he saw a number of people. It was around 11am on Monday, and the captain

alerted the Maritime Salvage co-ordination team from Las Palmas, and then the emergency services, because he felt they were obviously in trouble. In fact, 16 migrants were found aboard the stranded boat, all in fairly good health, and, fortunately, there were no minors. The boat was discovered some 58 miles north-east of the small island of La Graciosa, north of Lanzarote. Once he had alerted the

emergency services, the ferry captain decided to wait alongside the boat until the emergency team appeared, raising its occupants’ hopes. At around 1.15pm, emergency helicopter Helimer 211, located the ferry and then the small boat. And at 3pm, the Maritime Salvage vessel Al Nair appeared,. The rescue operation began, in full view of the ferry’s passengers and crew, watching alongside.

No stress… police dogs are tuned in to Mozart Cocaine-trafficker tried to swallow the evidence POLICE apprehended an African citizen of Guinea, after his partner in crime was admitted into hospital, having swallowed a large volume of cocaine to avoid being caught, physically, with the drug. The cops, who were conducting a routine patrol in the Altavista area of Arrecife, Lanzarote, noticed two men behaving suspiciously inside a parked car. As soon as they spotted the police, one swallowed several, small, plastic packages. They then got out of the car and tried to make a run for it. But the police gave chase, and, in the process, one of the men fell to the ground and be-

gan having a seizure. The officers began to assist the convulsing man immediately, and managed to stabilise him until the ambulance arrived. Medics managed to extract some small packages, and the man was transferred to a hospital in Lanzarote to have the remainder removed. Further inspection confirmed that the packages contained high-quality cocaine. Some 35 bags of precisely-weighed cocaine were seized, and, inside the vehicle, the cops also discovered 2,440 euros in cash and some foreign currency, as well as 11 mobile phones and several items of jewellery. Both men, who were arrested and accused of drug-trafficking, are awaiting court procedures.

POLICE dogs in Madrid have new kennels, which come with air-conditioning. Oh yes, and piped, classical music, in a bid to reduce stress! The 22 dogs, comprising the canine unit at the city’s municipal police force, this week moved into their new kennels, where they will experience music therapy, which, it is said, is an innovation thought to aid relaxation. It is known as ‘the Mozart effect’, and a recent study by animal psychologists, published in the Journal of Veterinary Behaviour, determined that anxiety in dogs can be reduced if they listen to music regularly. The study found that classical music had the most calming effect, although dogs also respond well to soft rock, jazz and reggae. But heavy metal

served only to increase stress levels. Each of the dogs in Madrid’s Canine Unit, which was created in 1983, has a different role in the force. Some are trained to sniff out narcotics, explosives and even counterfeit

money, while others are dedicated to search-andrescue missions. The newly-refurbished kennels also provide grass playareas outside for the working dogs, with air-conditioning in summer and heated mattresses for winter.

Oldest sea creature found at El Hierro

6th April - 12th April 2018

Animal-welfare group hits out as road crash kills a circus elephant AN elephant died, and two others were injured on Monday, when the circus truck transporting five of them crashed on the A-30 Spanish motorway.

JORGE Moreno Mendoza, a 20-yearold Canarian diver, has captured on camera one of the most ancient sea creatures ever recorded. The images were captured in the waters around El Hierro, specifically at La Restinga, which is a popular diving spot. The spectacular images captured are of a marine predicator named the Sea Ctenophora, or, in English, the Comb Carrier. Jorge, who has studied biology, believes this species is a rare find, and one of the oldest species to be recorded anywhere. And, though they are extremely similar to a jelly fish, they do not sting. The Comb Carrier, which comprises 97% water, is an invertebrate, small in size, transparent and oval in shape. And the four lines of “combs” shine a brilliant blue colour when they feel under threat. The species shares many characteristics with so many other living sea creatures, that they could be the oldest ancestors of all.

The truck was attempting to pass a slower vehicle near Pozo Canada, in the central region of Castilla-La Mancha, when it overturned suddenly, spilling elephants on to the road. Some were left roaming loose on the motorway, while another was injured and stranded, in a ditch beside the road. It was closed to traffic for around two hours, while authorities cleared the motorway lane by sending cranes to perform an elaborate rescue, hoisting the injured elephants on to other vehicles. One video showed an elephant being lifted as firefighters stabilised it by holding its big feet, one of which appeared to be wrapped in a bandage. There were five elephants in the truck, and another video showed the two uninjured animals being led away from the scene. PACMA, the political animal activist party, has denounced the Circo Gottani circus to Hellin Ayuntamiento, calling for its licence to be revoked. Party President Silvia Barquero said the animals had performed several shows in the area over Easter, and tweeted: “Show them more kindness. We treat animals like slaves. Enough of circuses that use animals. “Elephants should be in the wild, free and in peace. Not

in Pozo Canada, being transported to shows where they are abused.” PACMA officials, working “tirelessly around the clock” to stop the surviving elephants from returning to the circus, took to social media to make the hashtag #Electroencephalographs viral. In recent years, opposition has grown to using wild animals in circuses, and hundreds of towns have outlawed such entertainment. But the Spanish Government has yet to introduce a nationwide ban. This latest incident persuaded many social-media followers to decry the cruelty of keeping animals in a circus. But the Circus Association of Spain insisted that the animals were being transported in a truck that met all the legal regulations. Association spokesman Ignacio Pedrera was upset with the negative comments on social media, including one post which read: “If only the keeper had died instead of the elephant.” He added: “The driver, although unhurt, is suffering terribly. He loved those animals.”

The Passion draws a record audience

ADEJE’S Good Friday street theatre, La Pasión/ The Passion, has become a cultural reference point, not just at local level, but on regional, national and international platforms as well. This year’s staging of the last days and crucifixion of Jesus Christ was viewed by more than 200,000 people. According to figures received by Adeje Council, the average television audience for the event was 137,000, with over 200,000 tuning in at peak times.

These audience figures comprise a combination of those who followed the theatre on the regional TV Canarias station, and those who were tuned in to 13TV nationally. Following the success of last year’s link, the representation was also broadcast live on Facebook, reaching over 7,000 people, with over 1,000 shares and thousands of comments. From the data available, people were also watching from many parts of the

world: New York, Lima, Santo Domingo, England and Buenos Aires etc. The local municipal station, Radio Sur Adeje 107.9FM, also broadcast the street performance live. This year, Adeje’s communications department added more live and recorded videos to the Council’s social-media platforms, which was of huge interest to the public, especially the Easter-programme broadcasts of the new additions, such as the Children’s Parade.

Red for Stop, as holy cross hits traffic light A HUGE Semana Santa (Easter Week) procession in Spain was brought to an abrupt halt on Good Friday after a Jesus Christ float, carrying the cross, hit a traffic light on Red. Thousands in the crowd held their breath in horror as the cross, propped up by a statue of Jesus Christ, fractured into two pieces. It stopped the mammoth procession, in the centre of Madrid, temporarily, while hasty repairs were carried out.

Church leaders regarded the incident as “unfortunate”, and the parade continued after a worker climbed on to the float and fashioned a temporary repair, using ropes. A spokesman for the organ-

isers described the breaking of the cross as a “minor incident that has no significance” and stressed: “Nothing has happened to the statue”, which was sculpted in 1942 by José R. Fernández-Andes.

Conman’s rental price too low for luxury properties

A FRAUDSTER, using a fake Airbnb website, is renting out non-existent properties on the Costa del Sol. One property, on popular advertisement website Milanuncios, was depicted as a luxury apartment in the centre of Estepona. But the ultra-modern pad seemed too extravagant and too big for a rental price of just 350 euros a month. After making contact with a potential renter, who was actually an undercover journalist, the scammer requested an immediate payment of two months’ rent and a deposit, through Airbnb. He also insisted on his personal details, including name, telephone number and ID. Yet he refused persistent requests to view the property. The conman claimed he was unable to meet up because he had recently moved to Denmark for an engineering job. He sent a copy of his ID, which turned out to be card owned by a former Spanish political advisor. Although the impressive, genuine-looking Airbnb page boasted a plethora of five-star ratings, and a verified account, the website address did not match that of the real Airbnb; nor did it have a homepage. But the website domain,

bought in Germany, was last modified in December 2016, suggesting the fraudster has been conning holidaymakers for some years. Sue Callow, 55, based in Benalmadena, said she almost fell prey to the scammer five years ago, adding: “The property looked gorgeous and it was so cheap, so I emailed.” Sue, who has lived in Spain for 32 years, added: “He said he was in London and asked if I could do a money transfer, and, once it had been received, I could go to an office (he didn’t tell me where) to pick up the keys.” The scammer has advertised a number of similar, luxurious properties on Milanuncios for rent, at just 300 euros monthly, using different hotmail accounts. Interestingly, he uploads the advertisements late at night and deletes them the following morning. But Marbella-based lawyer Antonio Flores, who analysed the conman’s messages, said: “It is a scam. The way he writes, alternating formal and informal modes of addressing people, plus his choice of words, tell me he is not a native Spanish speaker. “These scammers like to pass for engineers in other countries, and I can’t recall how many times I’ve dealt with ‘engineers’ working in Germany, Holland, as well as Denmark now.”

EVERY single town and village in Spain will have access to broadband by the year 2021, and a budget of half-abillion euros has been set aside for the purpose, according to Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. Within three years, every home and business in the country will be able to get online, with a minimum speed of 300Mb per second. While the vast majority of built-up areas in the country have had broadband access for well over a decade, some of Spain’s more rural regions are home to villages with double-figure populations, or even less, where mobilephone signals and internet connections of any type are often lacking. That’s because telecommunications companies know they would make a significant loss by investing in the necessary infrastructure. Rajoy made this pledge, part of the government’s new 300x100 Plan: 300Mbs for 100% of the population in Teruel, the provincial capital city with the fewest inhabitants in Spain, at just 35,564 according to the last census, in 2016. The average size of a village is 30 inhabitants, and, in Aragón as a whole, nearly 80% of the head-count live in municipalities whose resident numbers barely reach treble figures. The Government chose to make the announcement in Teruel because it is one of the provinces most at risk of its population declining rapidly. And the broadband plans are part of the State’s

attempt to curb this trend. In practice, although 100% of towns and villages will be online within three years, only 95% of Spain’s population will have access to high-speed internet, since the remaining 5% are isolated homes in the depths of the country, a long way from their nearest built-up area. As well as the Aragón region, other predominantly-rural communities who will benefit from the move include Asturias, Galicia, Castilla-La Mancha and Castilla y León, all of which

will be given funds in their regional-government budgets to set up modern communications systems. Surprisingly, despite a permanent internet connection being guaranteed to just 66% of the population, Spain’s coverage is among the highest in the world, surpassing even that of the UK, Germany and Italy. But lack of communications, as well as declining access to healthcare, schools, policing, energy and opportunities for business, are the main issues threatening rural Spain. Those who need to work cannot live in areas where their nearest large town is a couple of hours away by country roads. This means that residents of child-bearing age are few, leading to schools closing which, in turn, forces young families to move away so their kids can have an education.

Biker and bike fall into ravine

A MOTORBIKE rider, aged 38, suffered serious bruising after falling into a ravine on his machine from the TF-21 in Teide National Park, on Tuesday. The accident happened at around 5.45pm, and the Immediate Response Emergency Team (ERIE) were able to rescue the injured man and carry him to an ambulance, waiting to transfer him to hospital. Also assisting in the rescue was a medical helicopter, used to stop the traffic flow by parking on the narrow road. That gave the rescue teams a clear passage to reach the man without complications, and he was taken to Candelaria Hospital for treatment and observation.

Murder suspect surrenders

Murder suspect Bradley Blundell

AN English fugitive, believed to have been hiding out in Spain, has handed himself in to authorities in Amsterdam. Bradley Blundell was wanted by British cops in connection with the murder of John Pordage, in Chelmsford, Essex. John Pordage was shot in the chest, following a confrontation outside a BP petrol station, near Chelmsford’s Army and Navy roundabout, in the early hours of 5th August last year. The 34-year-old died in hospital a short time later, despite the efforts of members of the public, and the emergency services.

At last, a great relief for bereaved parents THE biggest heartache for parents, without any doubt, is when they are forced to bury a child. And it’s even worse for them if they cannot afford the funeral. Now, though, the cost of children’s funerals is to be met by the taxpayer, announced Theresa May last week. The Prime Minister said in Parliament that it was wrong for grieving parents to have to struggle with the difficulties of finding money to bury their son or daughter. The move follows a campaign by Labour MP Carolyn Harris (pictured), who had to take out a loan to bury her eight-year-old son after he was killed in a car accident. Miss Harris, MP for Swansea East, and Labour equality spokesman, had pressed the Government to cover the costs of burials and cremations to help those parents who find it hard to

find the necessary money. But the Prime Minister, following a pattern already set up in Wales, said there would be a Children’s Funeral Fund, to cover the costs of funerals, burials and cremations. Mrs May praised Miss Harris for her dignity and strength, saying: “No parent should ever have to endure the unbearable loss of a child… a loss that no amount of time will ever truly heal. “But, in the raw pain of immediate loss, it cannot be right that grieving parents should have to worry about how to meet the funeral costs, for a child they hoped to see grow into adulthood. “In the darkest moment of any parent’s life, there is little light. But there can be support.” Mrs May added: “That is

why I have asked for the Children’s Funeral Fund to be set up in England, for Carolyn, in memory of her son, Martin, and in support of all those parents overwhelmed by such harrowing loss.” Miss Harris, whose son died in 1989, said: “At last, after so much pressure and so much

time, families right across the United Kingdom can know that, if they’re ever in that terrible, terrible position when they lose a child, there will now be a pot of money available to make sure their child has a dignified and respectful funeral.” Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the establishment of a fund was “very welcome and wonderful news”. He added: “This is a simple piece of dignity for bereaved families across the country, secured through tenacious campaigning by Labour’s Carolyn Harris, who, tirelessly, kept up the pressure when the Government was dragging its feet. “No parent who has gone through the heartbreaking experience of losing a child should be left struggling to cover the cost of a funeral.”

Bull-run leaves one dead, and 21 others are injured

The Spanish bull-running festival, in which tragedy struck

A MAN was gored to death at a traditional, Easter bullrunning festival in southern Spain, while another was seriously injured.

LONDON has been named the second-best tourist destination in the world by TripAdvisor, beaten only by Paris for the top spot in the 10th, annual, Travellers’ Choice awards for destinations. Rome was hot on its heels in third place, with tropical Bali fourth. But the Big Apple fell from fifth to 10th in the ratings. Crete, Barcelona, Prague, Marrakesh and Istanbul, which finished fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth respectively, were all rated above New York. The awards are based on millions of reviews and opinions from users on TripAdvisor. Winners were chosen by using the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions, along with traveller-booking interest. Seven of the top 10 were in Europe this year: Paris, London, Rome, Crete, Barcelona, Prague and Istanbul.

The 45-year-old, wearing a bright-yellow top, was gored in the lungs by an animal weighing half-aton, during the fiesta’s first run of the bulls, in the Andalucian town of Arcos de la Frontera. Despite being treated at a Jerez hospital, he died from his injuries and was the first bull-running victim this year. And a shocking video of the incident, which drew screams from horrified

onlookers, has been circulated widely on Twitter. Another man, hurt badly in the second bull-run when his stomach was pierced, was treated at the field hospital, before being transferred to Villamartin Hospital, in Cadiz, and at least 20 others were slightly hurt during the festival. More than 120 safetyand-security personnel were present, including Guardia Civil officers, Local Police, Civil Protection volunteers and paramedics. Mayor Isidoro Gambin expressed his “support and affection” towards the family and close friends of the deceased.

Brexit transition deal offers more scope to secure residency By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

THE UK and the EU have agreed to delay the full effects of Brexit until after 2020. For expatriates, this extends the cut-off date for establishing residency, locking in current benefits in Spain, from the Brexit due date of 29th March 2019 to 31st December 2020. For those already living here, this offers an extra 21 months in which to bolster your position by building up residency history. What will happen during the transition? The transition effectively “pauses” Brexit, to enable citizens and businesses to prepare for incoming changes. During that time, very little is set to change. Britons will have the same freedom of movement and

access to benefits as today, as will EU citizens in the UK. Freedom of goods, capital and services between the UK and EU will also continue, until the end of 2020. While 21 months falls slightly short of the two-year period requested by the UK, the EU insisted upon this deadline to tie in with the end of the current, EU budget period. Unless a further extension is agreed, the new rules for a post-Brexit world, to be formally agreed through the final withdrawal agreement, are due to come into effect from 1st January 2021. What does this mean for expatriates? EU chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, confirmed that British citizens “who arrive during the transition period will receive the same rights and guarantees as those who arrived before the day of Brexit”. He also announced that both sides had reached “complete agreement” on citizens’ rights after Brexit. While this proposed grace

period is reassuring news, nothing has been finalised. Even if it goes ahead, the clock is still ticking for expatriates to get ready in time. To secure the right to remain and access existing benefits post-Brexit, Britons need to be “lawfully residing” within their EU country of choice, before the cut-off date. Those planning on relocating should do so as soon as possible, to maximise their time in Spain. Those already here who have not acquired permanent residency, available after five, continuous years, should take steps to formalise their residency now. Although December 2020 seems a long way off, the risk of being caught in an administrative backlog for residency increases, as the deadline draws closer. It is advisable to use the 21-month transition as an opportunity to ramp up the time spent as a settled resident, rather than as a window to apply for

residency. What happens next? As with everything Brexitrelated, Barnier's mantra of “nothing is agreed until everything is agreed” applies. The full terms of the withdrawal agreement, including the guarantees on citizens’ rights, have not yet been signed. The transition period itself can only go ahead if the full terms of the withdrawal agreement are ratified, before the original Brexit deadline of 29th March 2019. While most of the divorce treaty has been agreed, issues to be resolved include the Northern Ireland border, and the exact role of the European Court of Justice in the UK. According to UK Brexit Secretary, David Davis, there is a joint commitment to honour the deal on the table: “We know what we need to do, and we're going to get on with it”. In the meantime, expatriates should work to the shortest

Airlines fail to dish up £4m in compensation SOME of the UK’s largest airlines have failed to pay a total of over £4m in court judgements to passengers, who have suffered flight delays. The Registry Trust Online, a company which records all County Court judgements in England and Wales, states that TUI, formerly known as Thomson, has been the biggest offender, after refusing to compensate some 5,000 delayed passengers to the tune of £2.4m. Following closely behind is easyJet, which has not paid out £1.5m to more than 3,000 passengers, whose flights were also delayed.

A further 2,000 people are also owed small sums of money by other airlines, yet EU law states that all

passengers are entitled to refunds when their flights are delayed. A spokesman for Bott and

Co Solicitors said: “Many of our customers have tried to recover compensation direct from the airlines. But they have been ignored or fobbed off, so they have had no other choice but to seek legal help.” He added: “Thomson, in particular, is making life difficult for delayed passengers. In 2017, we had to issue court proceedings on 73% of our Thomson cases, around 3,000 in total, on behalf of 7,000 passengers.” Bott and Co, which operates on a no-win, nofee basis, has lost just 1% of all court claims against Thomson Airways in the last year. “At least there is a crumb of comfort for passengers while they’re waiting at the airport for their delayed flight this summer,” said the spokesman.

Con couple’s wining and whining just didn’t pay! AN Italian couple have been detained in Gran Canaria, charged with fraud after spending an evening in a restaurant and running up a huge bill. The 34-year-old man, and a woman, aged 43, enjoyed the evening at an exclusive hotel’s restaurant, on the south coast of the island. The couple were testing their taste buds with good food, as well as expensive, high-quality wine. When they received a bill for 4,000 euros they refused to pay it, saying that the two bottles of wine they had polished off were not of a very high quality. They cost 1,950 euros per bottle, but the pair complained that it was not the wine they had ordered. That was when the restaurant manager called the National Police. The officer in charge requested that his other officers interview the staff, who were working in the restaurant that evening. They staff all confirmed what the manager had reported: the wine the couple had been drinking and enjoyed was the wine they had asked for. The police later arrested the couple on the grounds of fraud.

The City And The City

Friday 6th April, BBC2, 21.00

When the body of a young woman is found in the city of Beszel, Inspector Tyador Borlú (David Morrissey) of the Extreme Crime Squad is called to investigate the murder alongside Officer Lizbyet Corwi (Mandeep Dhillon). Although Detective Naustin (Dana Haqjoo) presumes her murder can be easily explained, Borlú notices strange similarities to an old case. The young woman’s body was found at the Bulkya Docks – an area known for its close overlap with the city of Ul Qoma. Although Ul Qoma and Beszel occupy the same geographical space, the cities have a dangerous and volatile relationship with each other, and citizens are trained from childhood to unsee everything in the other city. Commissar Gadlem (Ron Cook) thinks this is a case for Breach – the secret police who ruthlessly patrol all crossborder crime. Gadlem thinks someone else should take on the case, and that maybe it’s too personal for Borlú… But Borlú insists he can handle it. Borlú receives a call from a friend of the dead girl, who identifies her as Mahalia Geary (Andrea Deck), an American student living in Ul Qoma. Yet Borlú starts to worry when the caller admits she is not phoning from Besźel, but that she is making an illegal cross-border call from Ul Qoma. When Gadlem discovers that Borlú received an illicit phone call, he passes the case onto the Oversight Committee. Gadlem thinks the case is getting too dangerous for Borlú to investigate alone and wants to invoke Breach.

Why is it Tax Efficient to hold a Spanish Tax Compliant Bond?

S

etting up a Spanish tax compliant investment is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs. If you are thinking of investing but concerned about the tax implications of a bond, read on to see how it works. Tax may be payable if you were tax resident in Spain when you invested in your bond and you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The applicable tax rate will depend on your residency status and your individual circumstances at the time you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The Individual Income Tax (IIT) regime applies to all individuals who are currently tax resident in Spain and do not benefit from the Special Tax regime. A withholding tax of 19% over the gain from your bond will be operated. This will be paid to their Spanish fiscal representative who will in turn submit the proceeds directly to the Spanish tax authorities on your behalf. So, how does it work? Look at the generic example below:

Example of a Partial Surrender – no previous chargeable events Premium (initial value assumed used)

€100,000

Surrender Value

€130,000

Partial surrender amount Policyholder resident/Spanish resident before chargeable events (Initial premium/surrender value) x partial surrender amount (€100,000/€130,000) x €5,000 (€5,000 - €3,846.15) Tax at 19% on taxable income (€1,153.85 x 19%) Amount paid to policyholder Surrender value – partial surrender amount (€130,000 - €5,000)

€5,000 Yes Portion corresponding to premium and non taxable €3,846.15 Taxable income (€1,153.85) Tax due €219.23 (€5,000 - €219.23) = €4,780.77 Closing surrender value of Bond €125,000

The above example is for illustration purposes only, your personal circumstances will determine how the bond is taxed. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

It is Finals Week, and just five cooks remain. They travel Carlton Towers in rural North Yorkshire, where they must cook a lunch for some of Yorkshire’s finest local producers and farmers. The special lunch is overseen by one of the UK’s most impressive young chefs, Tommy Banks. Tommy has devised an exceptional five-course tasting menu for the guests at Carlton Towers using the best local produce, and with just four hours to recreate his complex and beautiful dishes, the finalists face their biggest challenge yet. The finalists then return to the MasterChef kitchen, where they must create one dish inspired by a place they love, and they have two hours to showcase all they have learned. Their one dish needs to demonstrate to judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace that they have what it takes to go the distance. Will their flair, creativity and palate be enough to save them from being sent home? Who can make it through to the final four and keep their dream alive?

Hospital BBC2, 21.00

In episode three we see the advice from the NHS to cancel all non-urgent surgery taking a heavy toll on the staff at Nottingham University Hospitals. Once busy theatres lie empty as surgeons have their operation lists cancelled, while patients who may have already waited months for surgery are left not knowing whether their operations will take place any time soon. 55-year-old Val’s entire jaw was destroyed by mouth cancer several years ago. She cannot eat or talk. Leading maxillofacial consultant surgeon Dilip Srinivasan is planning to carry out ground-breaking reconstructive surgery which will aim to grow Val a new jaw inside a specially constructed frame. With the new NHS ruling in place it cannot be deemed clinically urgent, but Dilip is determined to do everything he can to fight for Val’s operation. Orthopaedic consultant surgeon Tony Westbrook has had most of his routine surgical list cancelled, but believes there are exceptional circumstances and does what he can to give terminally ill Peter a hip replacement, in the hope he can send him home to spend his last few months with his family.

Fabric or leather? By LilI Meyrick at Muebles Chic

WHEN choosing upholstered furniture, the final decision should depend on what it is, and what you will use it for. Obviously, the bigger the piece of furniture, the bigger the decision, and the bigger the price tag! For example, you’re not going to worry as much about what an occasional chair, sitting in the corner of your bedroom, is made of. You’re hardly going to use it, because it’s merely for decorational purposes, and because it’s not going to set

WHILE you are likely to know about the different types of fines you can incur when driving, there are many others you may not be aware of, without even moving your vehicle, or even just by sitting in it!

The most common fines while driving are those for speeding and using a mobile phone. However, there are a multitude of others that can be imposed, without even moving the vehicle. Firstly, and probably one of the most important, putting

you back as much as the leather, corner-sofa you’re dreaming of for the lounge! If you are looking around for the perfect sofa, it’s not a choice you should make lightly. Finding what suits you and your home are things you need to take into consideration, because having young children or pets make your needs different from someone who hasn’t. As technology is on the move, constantly, the variety of materials available is, too, much of which is getting better and better at adapting to the modern-day demands. However, with all this variety, you will come across cheaper versions which doesn’t necessarily mean bad, as long as you know what you’re buying, and something isn’t sold to

you as something it’s not. A little knowledge can come in handy. With fabrics, the obvious thing to check is the thickness of the material; the higher the thread-count, the denser it is, and this will make it more durable. New, microfibre fabrics can be very hard-wearing, and are recommended to those who have cats and dogs, because they are easy to wipe down, and aren’t easily scratched.

Moving on to leather; there are many types of leather and imitation leather available on the market. Here are the most common you will find, when it comes to furniture. Faux leather: this is a synthetic, man-made leather which has improved, massively, over the years. If you want the leather look, without paying the leather price tags, this can be a good choice. Bonded leather: this is like a reconstructed

leather, made with leather fibres and mixed with bonding materials to form a harder product than the 100% leather, which has a much softer feel. This also makes it less easy to scratch. Split-grain leather: this is what you will find under the top grain leather of the hide, and has a suede-like texture, before being processed. It also has a harder feel than the top grain leather, but is still very durable.

Top grain: this is the top layer of the hide, buffed to remove any lumps and bumps to give a uniform grain, throughout. It is the most expensive, but has that luxurious, soft feel, and is very long-lasting. With so many sofa models and materials available, make sure you choose something you can live with. Look beyond the trends, and think hard about big patterns and bold colours. Comfort and durability should be a priority. For a wide selection, and plenty more information, come in and see us at Muebles Chic. We have a great range in stock, and special, order options to obtain any size, shape and colour you need. many myths to bed on this one, is that you can receive a fine for not having your insurance up to date. The fine is between 600-3,000 euros, and the vehicle could even be towed away by the police to their compound. The most common reason for a fine for no insurance is the age-old reasoning of “I’m not here to use the car; it is parked in my garage, so I don’t need to insure it”. This, sadly, is a myth that many spread, sometimes unwittingly. In Spain, any car has to have a minimum of thirdparty insurance, because the car could cause an accident when stationary. You can also be fined for not having a current ITV, the fine for this ranging from 200500 euros. If you have taken the car for an ITV and it has failed, then the vehicle’s

owner has two months to carry out any repairs and have the vehicle re-tested, at an authorised industrial garage or workshop. If this isn’t carried out, the vehicle will be put into “baja”, which means that it can’t be driven during this time. If you move address and fail to inform Tráfico within 15 days, you could incur an 80euro fine. Washing and/ or cleaning your car on the public highway can incur a fine of anywhere between 303,000 euros, because it is considered to be degrading a public area, and oil residue may go into the public drains. Another fine that you could incur, without moving the car, is for having a dirty number plate. There are two types of fine that can be applied, serious and very serious. The serious offence would be if the number

plate were bent, broken, not fitted, deteriorated, dirty etc. The fine would be 200 euros, with no points deducted. But if the number plate had been manipulated to make reading it more difficult, this would be a very serious offence, incurring a 6,000-euro fine, and, in some situations, may result in a loss of six

points from the driver/ owner’s licence. Another three, simple examples of fines which can be incurred, involving a stationary car, would be: parking on a beach, filling up at a petrol station with the vehicle’s lights on (very bizarre!), or the engine running. Fines of 200 euros would apply, and the loss of three points from the

driver’s licence. You can also be fined for repairing your car on the side of a public highway, but not on a private-parking lot. This doesn’t apply to the changing of a wheel, in the event of a puncture, although you should always try to make sure the vehicle is in a safe place when doing this.

A not-so-happy Easter EASTER should be a joyous, special time to be with family and friends. Unfortunately, this wasn't the case for eight dogs that were abandoned over the three-day, holiday period.

They arrived at our refuge, scared, lonely, injured and in very bad condition. We can never understand the cruelty of humans, when animals give us, unconditionally, so much love. Let's hope we can bring them back to health, and find new loving homes for them. Fun at the beach! Our next event at the refuge is on 14th April at 1pm. Again, our focus is on the dogs in our care, so we would like to ask our friends and supporters to help us make a dog's day, by joining us in a walk down to the beach. The dogs love the very rare walk and attention that they crave, so please, please

Cats Welfare News VACCINATING your cats helps protect them against serious illnesses and potentially-fatal diseases. Kittens can be vaccinated shortly after they are weaned off their mother's milk, and this should continue throughout their lifetimes. Their immune systems are very susceptible to disease, which is the reason for the early, intensive, vaccination schedule. The first vaccination should be given between 6-8 weeks of age, the second between 10-12 weeks, and the third booster between 14-18 weeks. Your vet will recommend an ongoing plan, which may include a booster vaccination every 1-3 years, to ensure longterm immunity against contagious diseases. Vaccinations can help prevent serious illness by building up your cat's immunity. They also help to prevent the spread of disease to other cats, and, more rarely, humans, although it's not common for people to catch diseases from their cats; but it does happen. These types of diseases are referred to as zoonotic. Small children and pregnant women are more susceptible to the

Guaza dogs We do have some good news regarding the two dogs involved in the awful, triple murder in Guaza. They are going to stay in the family, which is the best solution, so they're back with the people they love. Our thoughts are with you all. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for

our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Why are vaccinations so important for cats?

transmission of disease from cats, due to their vulnerable immune systems. You can reduce the risk by: cleaning out litter trays regularly, and disposing of faeces, quickly; washing your cat's bed often; bathing or grooming the animal, regularly, and keeping your children's hands, and your own, clean after playing. Following your vet's recommended vaccination schedule throughout your cat's life will help to ensure that he or she lives for a long time, and stays healthy. The season begins! It's now kitten season, and tiny babies are being found every day. We can't help them without milk and vet care. Please support us in any way you can. details are on our website at www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com/donation One home-reared, little girl (not born on the street) is now ready for adoption at Vet Express behind Gran Sur. There is no adoption fee, but she is due her first kitten injection which can be done there and then, and there will also be paperwork to sign to say you will have her neutered when she is old enough. Kittens can't be reserved, so check availability before you go. Whatsapp or ring them on 6156 05888; they speak perfect English. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm. It’s our 25th anniversary! THIS year marks the refuge's 25th anniversary! It's a tremendous achievement, from the people who started us, to those involved today. During the years, we have had our ups and downs, and almost “time is up”. We weathered the storms, and now we are strong, stable and ever-growing. Our secondhand shop in Alcala came to our rescue a few years ago, and we want to thank everyone who got it up and running, as well as the people who keep it going. We have seen many wonderful stories of our dogs and cats over the years, and would like to say a massive thank you to all our supporters, and those who have given our animals a second chance. When we receive follow-up news, after adoptions, it warms our hearts to know that they are in warm, safe and happy homes. To commemorate our exK9 animals, we are printing our very own successstories calendar. Please send photos of your K9 dog or cat, from over the last 25 years, including his or her name, and the year of adoption. An independent judge will pick the best 12 photos to appear in our 2019 calendar. We are also asking for sponsorship from 12 companies, whose details will appear on a month of their choosing (first-come basis). Details and costs will follow, over the next few weeks. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor for our calendar, and would like

to help support our refuge, please send an email to info@ k9tenerife.com Summer event We are planning a special, summer ball this year to celebrate our anniversary, so, if you are interested, please keep an eye on our website for more details. Thank you for supporting our refuge, and allowing us to continue to help dogs and cats in need! Charity shop Our charity shop in Alcala Plaza is always looking for new items to sell. If you have any unwanted clothes, shoes, books or bric-a-brac, please pop them into our shop, or to K9. We welcome all kinds of items, all proceeds going towards helping the dogs. The shop is open from 10am2pm, Monday to Saturday. Pop in, or call them on 646 561 035. Collections can also be arranged, using this number. Ways you can help You can become a volunteer dog walker by calling us, or simply popping by, during our opening hours. Remember to keep an eye on our website or Facebook page for any fundraising events which you may like to attend. K9 are often looking for people travelling to Germany, and other locations, to accompany dogs which have found new homes outside Tenerife. We are currently looking for flights to Munich or Stuttgart, so, if you are able to accompany our dogs during their flights, please contact us ASAP.

It's soda useful in the home! BAKING soda, sometimes referred to as bicarbonate of soda, is an alkali, often used to raise soda breads, and fullflavoured cakes such as fruit, chocolate and carrot. But its benefits aren't limited to the confines of the kitchen, and it is a useful addition to any household, for a variety of reasons. You can purchase it very cheaply, making it one of the leastexpensive home remedies to keep on hand. In addition to using it for minor accidents and injuries, it can become a part of your regular, hygiene routine. Natural deodorant If you want to avoid the parabens (preservatives) and aluminum found in many deodorants and antiperspirants, try a pinch of baking soda mixed with water, instead. This simple paste makes an effective and simple natural deodorant, or you can also simply brush some dry baking soda under your arms.

Insect bites Apply a paste made of baking soda and water to insect bites, to help relieve itching. You can also try rubbing the dry powder onto your skin; this is also effective for itchy

rashes. Baking soda helps to relieve minor skin irritation and itching, by neutralising toxins and irritants on your skin's surface.

Heartburn, indigestion and ulcer pain Most over-the-counter antacids contain some form of bicarbonate. Baking soda works by immediately neutralising stomach acid, helping to relieve heartburn, indigestion and even ulcer pain. Dosing is typically half a teaspoon, fully dissolved

in a half a glass of water, taken every two hours. Don't take more than seven half-teaspoons in 24 hours, or three half-teaspoons, if you're over 60. This should only be used as an occasional (not long-term) treatment, however, and be careful not to consume excessive amounts, which can cause serious electrolyte and acid/ base imbalances.

Exfoliator and foot-soak Add three tablespoons of baking soda to a tub of warm water, for an invigorating foot soak. You can scrub your feet with a bakingsoda paste, for additional exfoliation. A paste made

from three parts baking soda, combined with one part water, can be used as an exfoliator for your face and body, too. It's natural, inexpensive, and gentle enough to use every day. Hand cleanser Mix three parts baking soda with one part of water to make a natural hand cleanser that will scrub away dirt, and neutralise odours. Splinter removal Add a tablespoon of baking soda to a small glass of water, then soak the affected area twice a day. Many splinters will come out on their own after a couple of days using this treatment.

Sunburn remedy Add half a cup of baking soda to lukewarm bathwater, then soak in the tub for natural relief. For extra effect, when you get out, let your skin airdry, rather than towelling off the excess baking soda. You can also add a mixture of baking soda and water to a cool compress, and apply it to the sunburn, directly. Tooth and gum paste Baking soda has a mild abrasive action that helps to remove plaque, and polish, clean, and deodorise your teeth. One review of data from five, controlled, clinical studies found that toothpaste

containing baking soda enhanced plaque-removal effectiveness of tooth brushing, to a significantly greater extent, than brushing with a non-baking soda toothpaste. Baking soda also has antibacterial activity, and has been found to kill Streptococcus mutans bacteria, a significant contributor to tooth decay. For an incredibly-effective, tooth-and-gum paste, use a mixture of six parts baking soda to one part sea salt. Place them in a blender and mix for 30 seconds, then place in a container to use. Wet the tip of your index finger, and apply a small amount of the salt-and-soda mixture to your gums. Starting with the upper, outside gums, and then the inside of the upper, followed by the lower outside of the gums, then the lower inside, rub the mixture onto your teeth and gums. Spit out the excess. After 15 minutes, rinse your mouth. This mixture is incredibly effective at killing bacteria. You need to exert some caution in this area, though, because many believe baking soda can be too abrasive on your enamel. Teeth whitener For a natural way to whiten your teeth, crush one ripe strawberry and mix it with Âź teaspoon of baking soda. Spread the mixture onto your teeth, and leave on for five minutes. Then brush your teeth and rinse. This method should be used no more than once a week, as excessive use could potentially damage your tooth enamel.

What a goal, what a win! Osasuna 0 CD Tenerife 1 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review

PAMPLONA is bullrunning country, and maybe that’s what inspired Bryan Acosta to rampage through Osasuna’s china shop, as he starred in this excellent victory.

The Honduran midfielder had quite a day: kicked in the head by a stray, firstminute boot, mobbed by his team-mates for a wonder goal… then suspended for this weekend’s game, after another booking. But it was smiles all round, because this victory cut the gap to the promotion playoff zone to three points. A free-kick gave Tenerife an early chance. Carlos Ruiz headed the ball down in front of the home goal, and Longo missed connecting with it as it flew past him. Quique curled a shot wide for Osasuna, and it was shaping up for a tough contest, but Tenerife had a determined game-plan. Hard work was the foundation of this success, and the players performed all the basics well, backing each other up all the way.

This week’s interesting tweak to the defence saw Inaki come in at left-back, Raul Camara take over on the right, and Luis Perez playing in front of him, in midfield. It creaked a little at times, but Perez and Ruiz, in particular, poured their souls into the task. Alex Mula was a menace on the left wing, picking the defensive lock, and putting in a long ball that Longo

couldn’t quite reach. At the other end, keeper Dani Hernandez was at his reliable best, and his low touch, wide from Merida, denied the home attack. With both teams chasing the top-six, play-off spots, it was never going to be a dainty game, with Luis Perez catching a blow to the face, but shrugging it off. And Luis Milla rounded off the first half, with a decent effort for Tenerife. More of the same! Those could well have been coach Joseba Etxerberria’s words of wisdom during the break, and Tenerife re-emerged

with the same, confident, disciplined outlook. Longo had a lot of ground to cover as the lone striker, but he was always looking to bring in other players. His neat lay-off to Alberto gave his team-mate a clear shot, which kept the home keeper on his toes. The deadlock was shattered after 55 minutes, when Mula squared the ball to Acosta, way outside the penalty area. He caressed it with his boot, and curled it just between the diving keeper and the post. It wasn’t just a peach of a goal… it was the whole

bowl of fruit! Osasuna started to get a bit ragged as they chased the game, and Merida dragged a chance wide, as Tenerife kept their cool. Milla tried a long shot, which didn’t have the precision of Acosta’s goal. But it wasn’t far off. Tayron replaced Mula during a bright spell by Osasuna, with Xisco and Borja trying their luck. Fortunately for the visitors, neither troubled Dani or the woodwork. Vitola came on for Acosta, whose booking had added up to a one-game ban, while Longo’s last touch, before making way for Casadesus, was a half-chance, saved by the keeper. Inaki added to an impressive, defensive display by sending in a tempting ball that found no takers, and Quique had another wild blast for desperate Osasuna. Four minutes of injurytime held no fears for Tenerife, Dani fisting away a last-gasp attack by Xisco, who followed through and flattened the keeper. But Dani jumped back up to join in his team-mates’ celebrations at the final whistle. This Sunday, bottomplaced Sevilla Atletico come to Santa Cruz for a 7pm kick-off, and coach Joseba will warn Tenerife against complacency. He knows his 11th-placed team still have a lot to do, in their nine, regular, league games.

Third-floor fall was a big shock ALBACETE midfielder Pelayo Novo, who suffered life-threatening injuries when falling three floors inside his team’s prematch hotel, faces a long, slow recovery. But he will have the support of family, friends, team-mates and many of his opponents, who were shocked to learn of his accident last Saturday. The team, who play in

CD Tenerife’s league, had been preparing for the Second Division clash at Huesca when the accident happened. Pelayo was leaning on a railing, while making a phone call, and fell into a stairwell, sustaining multiple fractures and head wounds. He was rushed to hospital in Zaragoza, and the Spanish FA postponed the game, while his teammates awaited hopeful news. Albacete Vice-President Victor Verela was, clearly, still shaken by the accident when he

addressed the waiting media on Sunday. “Yesterday, the important thing was to make sure Pelayo stayed with us,” he said. “Now, we have to wait to see how everything progresses. We must remain cautious, because we don’t know how long it’s going to take.” He added: “It was a touchand-go situation, but things have progressed favourably. The recovery process will be very slow. “The family are confident he is receiving the best care possible, and that everything will improve, little by little.”

CD Marino WINNING home games is a basic need for all teams, and Marino need to get their house in order, after another home defeat. That makes it just two points from the last three games in Las Americas, yet the game promised much in the first half. But a scrappy second half was shaded by their visitors, from the north of Tenerife. Santa Ursula, the surprise team of the season, have been pushing for a topsix, play-off spot, and they showed why with early chances created for Jorge, cleared by Saavedra, and a wide header from Makana. Zeben, in the blue colours after leaving the visitors in the summer, closed in on Santa Ursula keeper Juanje, but their captain used his height to block the shot. There was some good football from both sides, the reds playing a quickbreaking, short-passing game, while Marino used the wings to seek out Yassine up front. Zeben, who skewed a shot high from the left, was intercepted by Makana when looking for another pop at goal.

Stefano was in a great position to open the scoring, but he juggled the ball, giving Hector Pano time to chest the loose ball back to home-keeper David. Santa Ursula ended the first half stronger, and David cleared with a powerful punch, as a cross came in from the visitors’ Guti. Stefano set up Jorge in the box, and he went down from a Meyi tackle, but the ref was unconvinced by his penalty call.

Salva squandered one of the clearest chances, at the start of the second half. Tello picked him out at the post, but his reaction was weak, slow and wide. Marino needed to push more bodies forward, and a long ball up to Zeben was one of many that raced on, past their intended targets. Alert Meyi tidied up after Jorge broke through, and the warning signs were getting louder as

Game of one half! Barcelona 3 Granadilla Tenerife 1

GOALS conceded made a tough task harder, as second-placed Barcelona avenged their defeat in Tenerife, earlier in the season. All the damage was done in the first half; Patri opened the scoring after 15 minutes, following a neat, passing move, and the second goal was a nightmare, as Granadilla keeper Pili could only help the ball into her own net. Jackie Simpson offered a glimmer

of hope, when she headed home, to reduce the arrears on the half-hour. But it was a short reprieve against a team driven by Holland’s Leike Martens, crowned as FIFA’s best female player in the world. And, also in their ranks, is Everton-born Toni Duggan. Patri restored the two-goal cushion for Barcelona just before the break, and that’s how it stayed, despite several, second-half chances for both sides. The disappointing result left Granadilla still sitting in fourth place.

Santa Ursula stepped up a pace. Ahmed, who took over from Pedro, made some progress down the right, while Josito was getting behind the defence on the other flank. But, all too often, Yassine was left with little support in front of goal. Santa Ursula showed more urgency in the last 20 minutes, forcing a couple of corners. David repelled one, but the follow-up hung, perfectly, for Adrian to run in and

head into the Marino net. Yassine had a penalty shout, when he went down after a tackle in the box, but the ref was not in a giving mood, showing as little interest as he had with the visitors’ first-half call. Kevin Castro joined the action in place of Diego, and his extra pace offered brief hope. But a resolute Santa Ursula held on to a win which put them fourth, leaving Marino in 12th place.

A huge football salute to Ray Wilkins, MBE

RAY Wilkins, player, captain, and coach at Chelsea, as well as being an England international legend, and a popular pundit, died on Wednesday, aged 61, following a heart attack at his home a few days earlier. Ray, a proud leader with a shrewd football brain, and known, affectionately, as Butch in his early days, inspired players around him. In later life, though, he fought alcohol problems, and had a triple heart bypass in July 2017. He was born in the London Borough of Hillingdon in 1956, and football was always in his blood. He also had two footballing brothers, who had lesser success in the professional game. But from his 1973 Chelsea debut, he established a reputation as an inspi-

rational team player, and was the club’s youngest captain at 18. After 179 games for Chelsea, he joined Manchester United and clocked up 160 games. Spells with Milan, Paris St Germain and Rangers followed. And, during the first of two spells at Queens Park Rangers, Ray made the transition from player to manager. As an iconic England player, Ray captivated world football with 84 caps, including appearances in the 1980 Euro Championship finals, and the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals. Few players epitomised his competitive spirit and pride in the shirt, and, after hanging up his boots, Ray became a TV pundit, noted for his cool, laidback analysis of games. Tributes, from home and abroad, flooded in from football colleagues of different eras when he died on Wednesday, and they all gave equal praise for his football ability… and, especially,

his qualities as a person. Former England captain Terry Butcher told BBC Radio 5 live: “Words can’t describe how much light and fun and laughter he brought to football.” He added: “I’m still pretty choked, thinking about his passing. You didn’t expect Ray to go at 61. I know he had some health problems, but the last time

Basketball

I saw him, about two weeks ago, he seemed so full of life. He was a wonderful man. “He mixed with the fans and loved having a laugh. He never called me Terry; he always called me ‘Big Stuff ’, and he called everyone else ‘geezer’. His energy and brightness would light up any room.” Peter Reid, another of his

former England teammates, told BBC Sport: “The beauty about Ray was that we knew he had demons, problems, but you would never have guessed it. His politeness, his manner, was outstanding. “Yes, there must have been dark days for Ray, but it never ever showed. We had a heart-to-heart when we had a few drinks once or twice, but, predominantly, he talked about football because he was football crackers. “He always had class… that brilliant smile, and that brilliant sun tan. Against me, Mister Pasty, he always looked brilliant, and he always was brilliant!” Former England striker Gary Lineker said: “Ray was a genuinely lovely man who was liked by everybody.” Ray Wilkins will go down as one of the football greats of the modern era, and a minute’s silence, in his honour, will be held before this weekend’s domestic programme.

Bouncing back in Bilbao

Las Galletas revs up again

STRONG defensive play against Bilbao helped to put Iberostar Tenerife back on track after a poor run of results. Their 74-67 win brought a huge sigh of relief to the squad, and will, hopefully, launch them towards next month’s top-eight, end-ofseason play-offs. The first two quarters, 18-12 and 21-12, were bold and convincing, but Bilbao woke up after that and pulled themselves into the game with a third-quarter 21-14. However, Tenerife shackled them in the final quarter 22-21. Mateusz Ponitka topscored with 11 points, but the rest of the squad still need to move up a gear to provide extra fire-power. It was a special day for Rodrigo San Miguel, who equalled the record number of appearances for a Canarian player in the ACB Liga Endesa. This weekend, he can burst through that barrier as the team hit the road again,

AFTER 22 years, the Las Galletas HalfMarathon event is as popular as ever. And, this Sunday, there is a new 5km category, alongside the regular 10.8 km and 21km events. this time to Malaga, to play Unicaja on Sunday at 11.30am. Tenerife, in ninth place,

need to get back to earlyseason form if they are to drag themselves up the table.

There is time for a more leisurely stroll tomorrow (Saturday) at the Sports Fair, between 10am-8pm. All runners, who have now

registered in the different age-categories, will be chipped, dressed smartly in commemorative running vests, and ready to pound the streets of the lovely fishing town, and beyond. The Sunday races start at 9am, and prize-giving takes place at 11.45am. It’s always a fun event, with serious undertones for the keenest of entrants. Las Galletas is a 20-minute drive from Los Cristianos, and the bus takes a few minutes more.
