Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice
T
he majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 euros or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:
£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax
What is the alternative?
A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.
The returns over the last few years have been:
2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 7.6% 7.5% 10.3% 6.5% 7.8% 7.8% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

Wind helped fuel the blaze Continued from Front However, the authorities had high hopes of it being contained by last night (Thursday), after a total of 350 hectares, spread over three areas and covering 9½ kilometres in all, had been destroyed, including pine forest and dry vegetation. And, considering that one hectare is bigger than a standard football pitch, that’s an enormous expanse. The fire was reported at 8.50pm on Sunday by a hiker, who spotted it from Los Escurriales, the landscape around Vilaflor, looking down at Madre del Agua. A helicopter from the Canarian emergency salvage -and-rescue team was on hand throughout Monday, trying to extinguish a
fast-spreading blaze, which could be seen, the previous night, from Arico, Vilaflor and at Madre del Agua. And although the temperatures were low, danger was never far away because the wind
was, slowly, blowing the fire towards the pine forests. Some 65 Spanish Army soldiers were already in action, with another 45 en-route. Also present were the forests’ fire services, with two spe-
Far better outlook for this summer’s aerial firefighters
FIREFIGHTERS in Spain, who use helicopters or small planes, have been given a chance to douse wildfires more effectively this summer, thanks to new legislation. Ahead of the prevention campaign this summer, air tankers will be exempt from complying with standard rest periods, according to the Official State Bulletin (BOE). The amendment means their pilots can now work for up to three consecutive hours, as opposed to two, which will be a welcome change, in the wake of last year. That became one of the worst periods for forest fires since 2010. Yet the Official College of Pilots (COPAC) says the amendment does not go far enough. “This is a partial and transitional measure,” says a spokesman for the association. “We believe a complete revision of the legislation is necessary. “The current legislation is ambiguous, out of date and has little to do with the reality of aerial, firefighting operations, either with regard to safety,
or putting out fires. “An adequate legislative framework, with reference to activity and rest times, is a fundamental, safety measure for professionals, who are carrying out a basic public service.” Last year, there were almost 800 forest fires in Spain, according to provisional data from the Ministry of Agriculture. During the summer alone, fire devoured almost 105,000 hectares of forest in Doñana, Valencia, Galicia and Asturias, destroying the natural habitat of much of the local fauna. Yet COPAC has been complaining since 2014 about the twohour rule, which applied to air tankers refilling from airfields, but not to those refilling from nearby sources. “Statistically, most
forest fires last for three hours, and the first hours of tackling them are the most effective,” said the spokesman. “There have been cases in which the fire has had to be abandoned to comply with the legislation, and it has then taken longer to put out when work has resumed. “When it comes to planes that can’t fill with water in reservoirs close to the fire, the journey to refill is not efficient to deal with a fire. Normally, the plane doesn’t work for more than 40-50 minutes on the fire in the two hours stipulated by the legislation.” But the new rule amendment should lead to a more effective response to wildfires across the country and, consequently, less devastation.
cialised fire-engines, as well as the Local Police and the Guardia Civil. Jose Antonio Valbuena, head of the Environmental Sector, who took charge of the operation from the start, felt that, with the help of two seaplanes, as well as the decreasing wind conditions, the fire would have been totally extinguished by last night (Thursday). A press conference, held yesterday afternoon in La Laguna, was conducted by Ten-
erife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, along with Sanchez, who is also a Technician. They gave detailed information on the disaster, stressing that the fire could have been intentional, down to carelessness, or accidental. That’s because, they pointed out, the weather conditions on Sunday, when the fire started, could not have been a possible factor. And though most of the inferno is now under control, the for-
est fire is still active around the Los Escurriales area, between Vilaflor and Granadilla de Abona. The Emergency Services were concentrating on controlling the eastern perimeter, where the fire still remains active, covering an area of some 80 hectares around El Rio de Arico. Earlier in the week, the Canarian Government considered the blaze to be a Level One emergency, with hundreds of dedicated workers already in the field. These included 115 military from the Emergency unit (UME), as well as 120 members from the Forest Brigade (Brifor), along with Technicians and Communications officers. But some 350 hectares, including the pine forest and its vegetation, were affected, and smoke from the blaze could be seen from the mountains close by. Thankfully, though, no homesteads or farms appeared to have been touched.

SPAIN’S Alliance of Tourism Towns (AMT), comprising Adeje, Arona, Benidorm, Calvià, Lloret de Mar, Salou, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Torremolinos, has outlined its priorities as the country’s leading tourism destinations. And the main thrust is that its individual boroughs need a “particular” financial system, and other means, to cope with the demands of the ever-growing tourist population, as well as more funding. Representatives gathered at a Madrid meeting earlier this week, and members of the British Embassy and consulates were also present. The eight member boroughs, together, represent just 0.92% of the Spanish population, yet they received 13.52% of visitors to the country, with 11,059, 430 arriving last year alone. They have an average occupation rate of over 82%, and employ over 86,000 people in the sector. In fact, Spain is currently registering as the secondbest tourism market in the world. The strong competition in the sector, globally, and the permanent evolution of the demand of the new tourist, are issues of concern for the members’ boroughs. They are all are working to digitalise the sector,

PP leader in ‘fake’ mess, by degrees!
CRISTINA Cifuentes, leader of the Spanish Government’s Popular Party in Madrid, is facing a fresh probe over claims that she faked a master’s degree qualification. Pressure is mounting, from two opposition groups, for Cifuentes to resign. Socialist party PSOE insists it will again attempt to force a vote of no-confidence against her, while Podemos has called for her to step down immediately. Spain’s Public Prosecutor is now looking at evidence presented by King Juan Carlos University, which has contradicted her claims. One of the tutors there now says he did not sign the degree certificate,
amid claims that a signature was falsified. But at a Madrid press conference, the 53-year-old woman said: “I am not going to resign because I have not lied about anything.” The controversy comes after Spanish news website El Diario broke the news that the politician had failed to complete a degree in “public regional law”, at King Juan Carlos Univer-
sity (URJC), in 2012. The regional leader claimed she had “misplaced” her thesis, but the university was also unable to release a copy. Her certificate was, reportedly, altered at a later date to say she actually did have the qualification. After being caught out, Cifuentes later said that she did not attend classes or take exams with other students, because, she claimed, she had a private agreement with university tutors to accommodate her busy schedule. The entire incident is a major embarrassment to the PP party, which launched its national conference in Seville last weekend.
to see positive returns for the country. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga says this isn’t just about “asking for money”, but “allocating the tools needed to direct the finance to alleviate the kinds of pressure tourism boroughs are under”. These boroughs, he says, have to deal with a huge, seasonal increase in their populations; people who visit and don’t reside in the boroughs, yet still require services. Without specific aid, said Rodríguez Fraga, the resident population will, potentially, suffer a parallel decrease in services. “We are dealing with issues that mark us out from other Spanish boroughs,” insisted the Mayor. “And, as there are laws which apply only to the larger cities in Spain, we believe it is only fair that we have specific regulations that apply to the boroughs with a large, regular, tourism weighting.” Arona Mayor José Julián Mena said: “While tourism is a source of income, and brings opportunities to the residents of our boroughs,
we can’t forget that the industry also brings huge pressure to bear, on local infrastructures and services.” He added: “We want to be able to continue offering both residents and visitors quality public services, but that isn’t easy with pressure from the local population, as well as a daily, floating influx of about 225,000, people. “That is why, exactly, we need a particular, financial structure which is also adapted to the needs here: roads, sanitation and health services, for example.” Also attending the meeting were Bill Murray, Head of Economics and Public Policy at the British Embassy; Sarah Jane Morris, British Consul for Madrid and Alicante, along with Lloyd Milen, British Consul for the Balearics, Catalonia and Andorra. They are interested in the group’s evolution, given the importance of the British market. During the meeting, there was also a discussion about the worries regarding the question of Brexit, and how this might affect tourism. However, all members were keen to stress the popularity of Spain as a holiday destination with Britons, and an overall sense that Brexit will not have a huge impact on tourism and commerce in that sector.

The monster wet-wipes
A CAMPAIGN, called “Don’t Feed the Monster” is spreading across Spain, including the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, aimed at preventing wipes from being flushed down toilets and ending up on shores. Baby and toilet wipes are meant to be binned, but countless numbers have clogged sewers and treatment plants, which, eventually, leads to them washing up on rocky areas. Water company Emaya spends an extra 250,000 euros, annually, on clearing wipes from the sewers and unclogging blockages. Local councils and groups also make efforts to clean wipes out of sewer
systems and off beaches. Public company Calvia 2000 spent well over 300,000 euros last year, unblocking sanitation systems, and removing 851
tons of solid waste. Part of the campaign reminds householders that even biodegradable wipes should not be flushed. That’s because they do not
have time to break down before causing serious problems and pollution. They should be added to compost piles or thrown in the bin.

Man arrested for domestic violence A NIGERIAN man was arrested by Local Police in La Laguna on Monday evening for physically abusing his girlfriend.
The cops arrested the 40-year-old, known as E.M.O, after a neighbour called them from the El Cardonal area. He said a couple were having a discussion, as well as pushing each other around, in the middle of the street. He was concerned, he said, because there was a child present. Curiously, the situation appeared calm when the police arrived. But when they questioned both parties, it became clear that the discussion was about their car, and that EMO had hit her. The woman said he had also bitten her hand and kicked her, all in front of their eight-year-old child. The police, who learned that there was a restraining order between both parties, could see her injuries because her right hand was swollen and limp. They then arrested her partner, charging him with domestic violence.

NEWS IN BRIEF Women’s car-boot remains

Prisoners
smoked out as inmate torches mattress
POLICE in Spain, searching for a woman reported missing a month ago, have found “biological remains”, believed to be hers, in the boot of her partner’s car. Zuni Adela Baez Mancuello had travelled from Paraguay to Spain on 6th March to see her boyfriend. But she went missing from Fuentidueña del Tajo, in Madrid, a month ago. The 34-year-old (pictured), was described as just under five feet tall, thin, with a fair complexion and light-brown hair. She was wearing a dark sweater, grey trousers and a long grey coat, and carried a yellow suitcase and a beige bag. Guardia Civil sources have not specified, exactly, what remains were found in the boot of the car.
Funeral man’s last service
A 48-YEAR-OLD funeral worker, in Spain, died during a service last Sunday. Paramedics, and an air ambulance, attended the scene in Oropesa, Toledo. But nothing could be done to save the life of the poor man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was not determined.
Utter chaos at Gatwick A TOTAL of 43 inmates, serving time at El Salto del Negro Prison, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palma, were evacuated after a cell was set on fire on Sunday evening, at around 8.30. GATWICK Airport, with the second-busiest, single runway in the world, was reduced to “complete and utter chaos” after closing for several periods last weekend, when airtraffic controllers called in sick, leaving one person in charge. An easyJet flight from Alicante was diverted to Luton airport, where the plane refuelled before returning to Gatwick. The airline, which apologised to passengers for any inconvenience, confirmed that three of its flights had been delayed and one diverted, adding that the situation was “outside of our control”. One airport worker said: “It was complete and utter chaos. No one could believe what was happening.”
Jet2’s tasty touch-down
THERE was much happier news for passengers travelling to Mallorca from Leeds-Bradford Airport on Monday on board a Jet2 flight. On arrival, cakes and refreshments were offered all round, to mark the airline’s 15th anniversary of this particular route. In that period, it is estimated that the airline has operated more than 17,000 flights, transporting more than six million passengers. Currently, Jet2 flies to the island from nine UK airports: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Belfast, Stansted, Leeds-Bradford, Manchester, Newcastle, Birmingham and East Midlands.
The cell was on Block 9 and was occupied by a prisoner with the initials YO, who torched his own mattress to create attention.
The smoke permeated the entire block, triggering the general alarms, but the evacuation was hampered because the heat caused a door to jam. Fortunately, officers were able to open it, manually, and what a good job they did because the consequences could have been far worse. In fact, their quick thinking almost certainly saved the lives of many inmates. But the prisoner who sparked the fire did suffer smoke inhalation because he refused to leave his cell. His
actions prevented officers from rescuing his cell-mate, and they had to use force to transfer YO to the isolation wing. All the other inmates were led away from danger, through a communal room on the lowerfloor of the prison, which was also covered with the thick, black smoke. Two inmates, who suffered severe breathing difficulties, were treated on site, while the prisoner who caused the fire was transferred to a local hospital for treatment.
Skeleton could be that of a 2016 missing man A SKELETON was found by a woman walking her dog in Adeje, and Local Police were alerted immediately. It was discovered in Calle Principe Pelinor, in the Galeon area, and a source from the Guardia Civil has confirmed that the bones are from a human body, According to the same source, it looked as though they had been there for quite some time, and for, that reason, police cannot
confirm whether it is male or female; neither can they yet determine the cause of death, for the same reason.
Also found, around the skeleton, were a pair of black trousers and a piece of fluorescent clothing, as well as a pair of trainers. Officials are not ruling out the possibility that it could be the remains of Carmelo Antonio Diaz Pezcoso, who disappeared in the area in November 2016. Neighbours last saw Carmelo near his home, close to the El Galeon area. At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing orange shorts, a green pistachio shirt, black shoes and yellow glasses.

Horrible waste of sperm whale’s life

Women hurt in a crash
TWO women were injured at around 10pm on Tuesday in a car accident in the Adeje area of El Tijoco de Arriba. The Emergency Services sent an ambulance to the scene, and one of the women, aged 47, injured her back, while her companion, 34, had mild whiplash. They were transferred to Adeje’s Hospital Quiron for observation.
Nine-year car-parking fiasco cost firm a mint
MAN-made rubbish, including a drum, has led to the death of a young sperm whale, found near Cabo de Palos, in Murcia, Spain. The whale died because of its inability to digest the rubbish, which caused peritonitis, and inflammation of its internal organs. An autopsy, conducted by the El Valle Wildlife Rescue Centre, found it had swallowed 29kgs of waste, including plastic bags, ropes and fishing nets, as well as that drum! Murcia Environment Minister Consuelo Rosauro said: “The presence of plastics in seas and oceans is one of the biggest threats to the conservation of wildlife in the world.” Despite regular campaigns against plastic waste, some 19 billion pounds ends up in the world’s oceans annually.
South Hospital’s so near to completion EL MOJON, Tenerife South’s new hospital, which is already providing many services now, is on course to be fully operational by April 2019. A meeting at the Chayofabased hospital, between
Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo, along with Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso and Jose Manuel Baltar, a Regional Health advisor, ended positively on Wednesday. El Mojon’s official spokesman, Jordi Espulgas, said they were extremely satisfied with the work on the South Hospital, as it is known. The long-awaited
Faker-cash Brits rumbled
FOUR Brits have been arrested in Magaluf for paying bills with fake 20 and 50-euro bank notes in bars and restaurants. Alarm bells went off when locals realised what was happening, even though they looked identical to the genuine notes. But the texture of them was not perfect, which gave the game away. The Guardia Civil and National Police rounded up the suspects on Monday night, and detained them. After spending Monday night in a cell, the expats were taken to their Terranova apartments,
where Guardia officers found 5,000 euros in cash, at least 2,000 of which were false notes. Whether the remaining sum is genuine is being checked out. The four expats have, reportedly, been “living their lives to the full” in Mallorca for some time, and have been hanging out in Magaluf ’s famous tourist areas. Investigators are trying to find out if the four are merely a group of friends, financing their stay on the island crookedly, or if they belong to a wider organisation.
hospital is now developing rapidly, with four operating rooms and a maternity wing, with its own specialised theatre, and four birthing units. Also, two floors in the main wing are designed for admissions, and include an on-site pharmacy and sterilisation block. In addition, Espulgas said the chemotherapy unit would be operative from the
middle of May. The officials also raised the importance of a public hospital here in the South, and analysed data from last year, which showed there were 170,000 consultations, as well as around 60,000 emergencies. The Canarian Government will start contracting equipment for the operating and delivery rooms next month.
A VEHICLE, left at Palma’s Plaza Bisbe Berenguer Palou car-park for nine years, has finally been towed away, after clocking up 28,000 euros in fines.
The Volvo was left in a space next to the barrier, in March 2009, by a woman known as “Inmaculada M”, who never returned to collect it. Back in 2013, a judge ruled that she must pay the fine and collect the vehicle as soon as possible. But the authorities were unable to track her down. Months turned to years, and there was still no response from the mystery motorist. A further legal decision, in 2017, awarded the Volvo to the car-park owners, but its diminished value hardly covered a fraction of the huge parking fine. The owners decided to wait until this week to see if “Inmaculada M” would finally materialise, but, alas, they gave up and had the car towed away, leaving a 28,000-euro hole in their takings.

Council’s HIV testing is available straight away A CAMPAIGN has been launched to encourage people in certain groups to take advantage of rapid HIV-testing available, in Adeje.
The Council’s Department of Health has offered this service for a few years through the borough’s Infosex group, in collaboration with the Canarian Health Service. The programme enables those interested in being tested to do so in a fast, confidential, free and anonymous way, with qualified personnel in attendance. Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo said: “We feel, perhaps, that there may be people unaware of the service, so we are launching the campaign to publicise it for the general public. Our main objective is always the good health of the people of Adeje.” He added: “Since 2014, we

It also provides rapid testing for HIV, syphilis and Hepatitis C.

Woman who fell from ambulance
A PATIENT, said to be mentally ill, was seriously injured after falling from the back of an ambulance, on Spain’s busy AP-7 motorway, in the Costa Blanca area of Ondara. A German expat, living in Moraira, in Alicante, said he was following behind the ambulance, which was travelling at speed, when the back doors suddenly flew open and a woman tumbled into the road in front of him. He braked just in time, and tried to protect
her body with his car, before trying to warn other drivers, who were speeding on the same carriageway. It is alleged that the ambulance crew didn’t realise the woman had fallen until alerted by other drivers. The German believed the woman was aged between 20-40 and was “breathing with difficulty”. The ambulance crew then put her on a stretcher and said it was not necessary to call a doctor. It is also alleged that one of them said it was

Cllr Trujillo Bencomo stressed: “We are involved in a serious campaign to let people know about Infosex Adeje, and the services on offer. “We want to make people aware of the importance of early diagnosis in HIV/ Aids cases, and encourage them to take the rapid test, particularly those in groups who are more at risk of HIV.
“These include men engaging in sexual activity with other males, as well as transsexual women. The campaign will use all media, social platforms, posters, leaflets etc.” The National Plan in Aids believe that 30% of people living with Aids in Spain are still not aware that they are HIV positive, or that the occurence of STIs continues to rise. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, known as UNAIDS, is leading the global effort to end AIDS as a public-health threat by 2030, as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. It has a 90:90:90 strategy: by 2020, 90% of all people living with HIV will know their HIV status, 90% of all those with diagnosed HIV infection will receive sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 90% of those receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression. Trujillo Bencomo said “Adeje Council is committed to allocating the human, material and economic resources necessary, to work with this international body to make this happen.”

Puigdemont release sparks tension with German authorities A GERMAN judge’s decision to release former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont from custody, after he had been held for 12 days on a European arrest warrant, has created tension between the governments of Chancellor Angela Merkel and Spain’s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy. Puigdemont is on bail for 75,000 euros, but the Spanish executive has made it clear that this move has upset its strategy for dealing with various, independence leaders, who fled the country to avoid the legal consequences of their secessionist bid. A spokesperson said: “If the EU is used by some states to question other states, then the EU loses its function.” Puigdemont, and several other former officials and deputies, on charges of rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds, in connection with Catalonia’s illegal referendum and unilateral independence declaration of last October, fled to Belgium, Switzerland and Scotland to avoid arrest in Spain. The former premier was arrested in Germany as he travelled back to Belgium from Finland. The warrant was issued by Spain, which had hoped that the German

judiciary would equate the Spanish crime of rebellion with its high treason, to ensure that Puigdemont could be tried for the offence back home. German prosecutors supported this move last week, but a judge in the SchleswigHolstein regional court has since ruled out the charge of “rebellion” against the former Catalan leader. Until now, the Rajoy administration had boasted that Catalan separatists had failed to secure support from any European country, institution or partner. During a trip to Algeria last Tuesday, the Prime Minister said that Europe could not merely be an economic and mercantile union, but a union of moral and democratic values, based on common rights. Last Tuesday, Spanish Justice Minister Rafael Catalá had a long, informal talk about the Puigdemont case with his Belgian counterpart, Koen Geens, at an event in Marrakesh. The conversation focused on the problems with the European arrest-warrant system, created 14 years ago to simplify extradition requests between countries. Both ministers agreed that these warrants normally
work well, many being carried out within 15 days, but not so with the morehigh-profile cases. In these latter cases, judges are often granted excessive latitude to review a judicial process, which has already been investigated in the country of origin. As a result, the EU warrant is not applied the way it was designed to be: automatically, and without room for reinterpretation. Some PP leaders went further in their criticism. “If somebody attempts a coup and is not returned to the country where he attempted the coup, then maybe eliminating the borders turned out to be a bad decision,” said Spaniard Esteban González Pons, the European People’s Party Group spokesman. “If the EU is used by some states to question other states, then the EU loses its function.” Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis was asked whether the Spanish Government should be making more of an effort to the rest of Europe, offering its own view of the matter. And, also, whether they should explain what a critical situation the Catalan crisis has created for a major EU member.
The Rajoy government had boasted that Catalan separatists had failed to secure support from any EU country or institution. But Dastis replied negatively, and said that it was enough to wait and see what the various judges would do, because of Spain’s respect for the separation of powers. A similar argument has been used in public by Justice Minister Catalá, and by government spokesman Íñigo Méndez de Vigo. In private, though, officials are disconcerted by Germany’s decision, particularly in light of the “unfortunate” comments made in public by Justice Minister Katarina Barley. She said that if Spanish courts could not prove that Puigdemont misused public funds, “then Puigdemont will be a free man in a free country: namely, Germany”. Rafael Catalá, Spain’s Justice Minister, said his German counterpart should respect all judicial decisions in the case, both those made by German and Spanish judges. He also noted that German prosecutors had asked for Puigdemont to be extradited for rebellion. Last Sunday, Foreign Minister Dastis said he would not seek to increase “tension” with Germany, insisting on the need to “depoliticise” the matter. He told journalists at the PP national convention in Seville: “This is a matter between judges, and we’re going to leave it at that.”
Thugs hammer guard, then torch beach club A GROUP of thugs, who tied a security guard up and beat him severely, then set fire to a popular Costa del Sol beach club, razing it to the ground. But, after torching the club, the suspects at least moved the guard away from the blaze so he wouldn’t be burned alive. The attack happened in the early hours of last Sunday at the popular Heaven Beach Club, on Guadalmansa
beach, which had been frequented by “Stranger Things” star Millie Bobby Brown, who was born in
Marbella. There were two security guards on the premises, and one of them heard a noise at 3am. When
he went out to investigate, he was surprised by hooded men, who tied him up. The other employee escaped and called for help. After immobilising the victim, the assailants beat him persistently, then stole some of his personal belongings. They went on to spray a mattress with a flammable liquid and set it on fire. The flames spread all over the property, which was built with African reeds. And despite efforts to douse the fire, the building’s material meant it was razed to the ground rapidly.

Slippery smugglers could not wriggle their way out
A GANG of smugglers, understood to have exported thousands of young eels (elvers) illegally to Asia, made around 37½m euros before being broken up by the Guardia Civil. They discovered that a 10-strong group, comprising 10 Chinese, Moroccan and Spanish people, had been set up to supply young eels to China and Japan, where they could grow and become more valuable. The eels were, initially, caught illegally in Spanish waters and transferred to Portugal. That’s why Spanish authorities recruited the assistance of Europol and Portuguese police, which resulted in the seizure of a number of shipments at various airports in Portugal. To avoid further arrests there, the group moved part of their illegal activity to the southern Spain area of Algeciras, in Cadiz, but a Moroccan was arrested in nearby Tarifa, trying to smuggle the eels out of the country. Guardia Civil officers, via an operation called Elver, then searched properties in Gijin, Piedras Blancas and Soto del Boat, in Asturias, as well as Algeciras. They discovered 364 suitcases, capable of holding more than 5,000kgs of eels, bound for China. Following this huge raid, a van was stopped, thanks to information received, holding 129kgs of elvers, which were intended for transport to Morocco by lorry. It is believed that the total value of the eels, once sold on the open market, was estimated at 400m euros.

Dumping ground for island’s elderly folk SOME say their house is too small, while others complain about having too much work and too little time. Then there are those who don’t even bother to make up an excuse. According to staff at La Palma’s General Hospital, the latter simply don’t answer their calls, asking them to collect their elderly relative. This hospital is used, regularly, as a dumping ground for “bothersome” next-of-kin. There are currently four abandoned senior citizens there, yet between 10 and 20 is the norm. Initially, the family bring their aged parent or relative to the emergency services because he or she has a severe health problem, ranging from a stroke to cardiac failure. The patient is admitted and
the condition treated, but staff soon begin to realise that family visits are few and far between, if at all. And when no one shows up to collect the patient after discharge, these suspicions are confirmed. “Some people can’t take responsibility for them because they, themselves, are also dependent on someone else, but other cases are shocking,” said centre director José Izquierdo, who has seen his
“We are constantly juggling priorities” hospital make headlines on a number of occasions because of this scenario. “It’s not a problem peculiar to here,” he points out. “It’s happening in all hospitals in the Canary Islands and
across Spain, because of our increasingly-aged population.” And Izquierdo stresses that reporting the worst of these cases to the authorities has met with little success. “That’s because the criminal offence of abandonment is not clearly regulated,” he says. “And also, because, technically, the people are not abandoned since they are being treated in a hospital.” The search then begins for a spot in a nursing home. But, with an increasingly-elderly population on the island, and around 300 places available, it can take up to a year to find one. Meanwhile, in several cases, the families who abandoned the relative are spending the latter’s pension, and taking possession of his or her belongings. And all the while, the taxpayer foots a bill of around 3,000 euros a month for his or her care at a staterun home. Izquierdo is requesting
better, sterner laws, which will enforce the return of the old person’s property in the event of abandonment. This situation affects the general public in other ways, such as delays in scheduled surgeries, through a lack of beds, and, consequently, longer waiting lists. “We are constantly juggling priorities,” says Izquierdo. One 87-year-old man has been living in the hospital since May 2017. He is an independent sort, who simply needs someone to remind him to take his medication at the right time, and help him to prepare meals. But he has no idea why his children don’t come for him. “He says he doesn’t understand what’s happening,” says a staff member. “He has worked all his life and has his own house. He cries a lot. He says he just wants to be taken away from the hospital, because it is ‘an ugly place’ where he sees a lot of people ‘who go away, and who die’.”

Socialists in Hard work for bid to outlaw the maritime ‘fake news’
SPAIN could become one of the first countries in the world to legislate against fake news, because an amendment to a new dataprotection bill has been put forward by the Spanish Socialists Party (PSOE). Its intention is to get rid of false, online content, which could pose a threat to real facts and information. In a bid to regulate digital rights, the amendment seeks to make administrators of social media and digital platforms personally responsible for potentiallyuntruthful content, published on their sites. It also wants to preserve people’s rights to reputation online, and those affected may even be allowed to demand that the website publishes corrections, but only in certain legal situations.
The term “fake news”, coined by US President Donald Trump, has led to a number of recent scandals, which have posed a threat to democracy. But it is unclear whether the term is referring to the publication of false facts, or the way online platforms make editorial decisions about what they choose to report. If Spain’s new amendment is passed, it could become the first country with multiple, comprehensive laws relating to digital rights. Malaysia has approved a harsh law against fake news, doling out a six-year prison sentence for offenders, while Germany passed a law last year, fining social-media sites if they did not remove defamatory content. Other governments are, currently, considering creating similar laws, including Singapore and the Phillipines. But Spain would, thus far, be the only country to present sweeping laws regulating digital rights.

THE Maritime Search-and-Rescue team met up again on Tuesday, for the second successive day, in the hunt for a small, migrants’ boat, which left Senegal last Sunday. The boat, heading towards the Canaries, was thought to have at least 20 people aboard. The alert was made by an official from a non-government organisation (ONG), who is working with the immigrants, The Sasemar 103 aeroplane was also out again on Tuesday, retracing the route thought to have been taken by the migrants, as well as searching the South coastline of Tenerife, which the boat was, apparently, targeting.

Mad couple couldn’t stop provoking the police LOCAL Police have arrested and charged a 20-yearold British woman, along with a Polish man, for assaulting officers.
They were arrested when officers, assigned to the tourist unit, were carrying out their routine patrol on the Paseo de las Canteras, in the Gran Canaria capital of Las Palmas. While on patrol, the cops began questioning a street vender, when two people, his friends, evidently, butted in. They insulted the officers, verbally, and attempting to take a gun from one of them. The officers then asked for identification, but the woman was reluctant to hand hers over, so her companion decided to create a scene by provoking the officers, pushing one of them. Both officers tried to calm things down, but the situation deteriorated and the cops were on the receiving end of physical aggression. The officers tried to restrain the 27-yearold, whose behaviour was extremely violent. During the struggle, he managed to dislocate one of the officer’s knees, with a martialarts movement, apparently. The cops managed to wrestle the man to the ground, but, while he was being restrained, the woman was kicking both officers constantly. She disappeared from the area quickly, but was soon located and arrested by other policemen. The couple, who were arrested and charged with police assault, were placed in police custody, awaiting a court appearance.
Addicts lining up for their cocaine bargain DRUG-DEALERS are taking a leaf out of coffee shops’ books, by dispensing loyalty cards, offering free cocaine to keep their lucrative, middle-class buyers hooked. The “loyal-t” scheme mirrors deals offered by coffee chains, and gives wealthy customers their sixth and 12th purchases, free. The wraps, which cost up to £100 each, are then delivered to homes or offices by couriers, who stamp their loyalty cards when the cash is handed over. This so-called “culture of excess” is being blamed for escalating violence on city streets across the UK. The loyalty card reads: “One freebie for every five stamps that you collect”, and uses a smiley-face image from the 1980s, suggesting dealers are hoping to appeal to middle-aged clients. Harry Shapiro, of DrugWise, an online, drug-information service, told the Daily Telegraph: “The level of competition on the street means they have to offer
“Buying cocaine is now as easy as ordering a pizza, and this drug trade is increasing violent crime on London’s streets,” an incentive to get their customers to stay with the one dealer. “But this card also shows how there are two, very different ends of the drugdealing spectrum. At the one end, there is an offer of a modicum of support to the buyer. But, at the other end, they are trying to beat the competition, and that competition results in violence on the streets.” Last week, Labour MP David Lammy said the “Deliveroo-style” drugs culture had driven soaring rates of young people being murdered in London. “Buying cocaine is now as easy as ordering a pizza, and this drug trade is increasing violent crime on London’s streets,” he added. He believes the trade has created a cocaine industry worth £11bn, which has bred gang rivalry, and wars over
territory. The Tottenham MP said he knew from police that Eastern European and Albanian gangs were trafficking drugs, guns and people, and that police had “lost control” of the drugs market. Politicians, including London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Home Secretary Amber Rudd, had failed to show interest, he said. “I’ve had four deaths in the London Borough of Haringey since January, and as many knife attacks as there have been weeks in the year,’ he said. “There are parents, friends, families and schools traumatised and grieving, and there is absolutely no sign, at the moment, of a reduction in the violence.” He stressed: “I’ve been an MP now for 18 years, and I’m afraid that what we’re seeing today is the
worst I’ve ever seen it.” But Ms Rudd is ready to order websites such as YouTube, Snapchat and Instagram to do more about shutting down content promoting violence and knife crime. The National Crime Agency disclosed last month that some 819 British citizens were flagged as possible victims of slavery last year, two-thirds of them aged under 18. Many are thought to have been exploited by drugdealing networks, which use children and vulnerable people as couriers, to move drugs and cash to rural or coastal towns, to sell heroin and crack cocaine. Lammy said: “We are the drugs market of Europe, and I think the police and our country have lost control of that drugs market. “You have young children, as young as 12 or 13, being recruited into gangs to run drugs across county lines. Drugs are prolific. It’s like Deliveroo… they’re as prolific as ordering a pizza.” The Home Office identifies the “devastating” impact of crack cocaine as a key driver of the street violence.

Drug lord fails to end gang war in Scotland
BRITISH security services recruited an expat drug lord in Costa del Sol to act as a peacemaker, in an attempt to end a longstanding, Scottish, gang war, which has led to bloodshed over the years. In a bid to settle the infamous Daniel v Lyons drug feud, which has threatened Scottish authorities for almost two decades, the expat was approached to persuade the rivals to agree a truce. The wealthy criminal, in his 60s, was on business in London when contacted by representatives from either MI5, or the National Crime Agency, reported Scotland’s Daily Record newspaper. It is not clear which intelligence agency approached the expat, who
was jailed after a huge heroin haul was seized in Glasgow, some years ago. The feud broke out in 2001, when a stolen cocaine stash fuelled years of gang warfare. Members Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll, 29, and Michael Lyons, 21, were killed in a triple shooting in the Glasgow area of Lambhill, in 2006, but Steven Lyons, 37, survived. He then went on the run in Spain, eventually joining forces with an Irish gang of drug-dealers on the Costa del Sol. Another gang member, Billy Paterson, joined Lyons in Spain some time later, but he was eventually jailed in 2015 for killing Carroll. However, the Daily Record reports that the drug lord failed to settle the issue, because neither gang would back down.
UK-bound trains are built in Spain THE first of a batch of new trains for the UK has left a production line in Spain, and the multiple-unit transporters are expected to be seen on the Northern network by the end of the year. The first train has left the CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) factory in Irun, northern Spain, by low-loader, for track testing at Ve-
lim, in the Czech Republic. Ian Hyde, head of new Northern trains, said, “We’ve worked for so long on the design and construction, and it’s a real thrill to see one on the move for the first time, even if it is only for a few metres to the low-loader! “Delivering this milestone brings us that much closer to seeing the trains out and about, which will help improve customer journeys across the north.” Northern, part of the Arriva group, promises 98 new trains and 243 upgraded trains, by 2020.

School bullies are still dishing it out to hapless victims ONLINE harassment among young schoolkids in Spain has increased by 65% in the last five years, which adds up to around 6,500 victims during that period. And Ana was one of those victims, whose life became a living hell when she was 12. Initially, it was a case of whispered insults and furtive shoves at her Pamplona school, in northern Spain. Then the campaign really took off. “You disgusting whore. You’re so easy. You’re a slut,” shouted the ringleader. “Why don’t you just die! I don’t want to breathe the same air as you!” The campaign lasted four, long years, during which time Ana found herself entirely alone as the bullies prevented other students from approaching her. One humiliating episode involved her gym clothes being pulled from her rucksack and thrown in the air. “Watch out! The virus is contagious!” came the accompanying cry. Insults became a daily reality for Ana, who was persecuted by text and on social networks, even in the safety of her own home. In 2016, she was no longer able to cope with her situation at her Pamplona school and left. The insults and attacks from her classmates had made her so anxious and depressed, that she needed therapy
and drugs to overcome the trauma, according to the statement read out in court. Her parents, who’d also had enough of their child’s bullying, had, fortunately, taken action. Ana’s main tormentor was sentenced to 14 months’ probation, and ordered to comply with a 300-metre restraining order. Just 842 cases of cyberbullying among minors were reported in 2012, compared with 1,364 between January and October, 2017, according to data by the Interior Ministry’s Crime Statistics System. And, in total, the Spanish Government has, in fact, 6,500 cases on record from that period. Carmena del Moral, legal analyst for Save the Children, said: “Children are gaining access, from an increasingly-young age, to very powerful weapons, and a world without rules: the internet.” Carmena is convinced that the extent of the problem is even greater than statistics suggest. “Many cases are not reported and remain under wraps,” she said. “The reasoning behind the data implies that some 82,000 minors are being targeted.”
She has published her own study, based on the personal accounts of 21,500 students, aged 12-16, in which 6.9% admitted to having been cyber-bullied. According to her research, 4.2% of the victims believe they were victimised for their sexual orientation; 5% said it was down to the colour of their skin or their religion; and 16% said it was because of their physical attributes. WhatsApp, internet forums, social networks and emails are all useful tools for the cyber-bully, and victimisation has risen in direct proportion to their popularity. In addition, cellphones have become the cyber-bully’s partner in crime. According to the report, “Digital Society in Spain 2017,” 86% of young people between the ages of 15 and 24 have a cellphone, and use it for messaging (81.7%) and access to social networks (77.5%). “Compared with traditional bullying, in which children are in a safe environment when they get home, we are now up against a phenomenon that carries
on 24 hours a day, and seven days a week,” said Carmena. “There is no respite for the victims.” Bullying, both virtual and in person, drove 16-year-old Arancha to commit suicide in Usera, Madrid, in 2015, in a case that hit the headlines. One of the many messages she received from her tormentor, read: “You slut, what are you saying about me? F*** you! Give me 50 euros or I’m going to bring my cousins and more people to beat you up.” The most recent report from the Attorney General’s Office expresses its concern over the escalation of the problem, and the fact that many of the bullies are under 14 and too young to be penalised. “Incidents of bullying happen more outside the classroom than in them, if that’s possible,” it adds. “This is because access to new technology is happening at an increasingly early age.” Researchers have found that cyber-bullying is also used to establish controlling relationships. “The most common incidents among Secondary [ESO] students are from anonymous people, with false profiles, who start to bully minors by asking for intimate photos of them,” says Diego Lucena. He is the co-ordinator of a bullying-prevention project, which is functioning in 10 High Schools and 18 Junior Schools in the Madrid region, in collaboration with the Spanish Footballer’s Association (AFE).
Car crash kills
pensioner
A PENSIONER, aged 67, died, and 13 others were injured, in a multiple car smash on Spain’s AP-6 motorway, near Navas de San Antonio, in the direction of La Coruña. The 112 Emergency Control Centre of Castilla y Leon said at least 10 vehicles were involved, and firefighters had to cut one person free from one of the cars. Six people were taken to hospital in Avila, and another six to Segovia, while one other person was treated at the scene. Two more people, aged 22 and 28, died on Monday, on the A-325 at Fonelas, in the Granada province of Andalucia, when their vehicle left the road. Another person, also 22, who suffered injuries, was taken to hospital.
Brake on speed limits? SPAIN’S traffic directorate (DGT) is considering plans to reduce the speed limit on main roads across the country, including the Canary Islands, in a bid to improve safety. The proposed reforms would see maximum speeds on many main roads lowered from 100 to 90kmh. But regions would be allowed to ignore the new limit, “if the route is safe and well maintained”. A DGT spokesperson said that signs were often ignored because the limit “makes no sense with the type of road”. She added: “If a driver sees a road in good condition, he or she doesn’t understand why there’s a low speed limit, and vice versa.” The proposed changes will be sent to the Spanish Home Office “soon”, according to reports.

stuffed Brit’s luxury tax scam Bear in car boot! sends him behind bars A BRITISH businessman, who used cash from an 11.2m, international tax scam to buy a luxury Costa del Sol home, has been jailed. Leeds Crown Court heard that Jason Butler, 46, stole millions in VAT, after forging hundreds of fake invoices.
A probe by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) revealed that he tried to bury the scam in a complex web of companies in the UK, Spain, Gibraltar and the US. He used the cash to fund a lavish lifestyle, splashing out on a plush villa in Marbella, plus sports cars, including a Ferrari Fiorano FI, a Ferrari 360, a Lamborghini Murcielago
and a Mercedes SL350. Butler, reportedly, ran a series of companies in his native Leeds, before emigrating to Spain. He told investigators he had spent almost 70m euros buying personal, paymentprotection insurance data from nine UK-based firms, between 2011 and 2015. But, it was revealed, he had actually been trading worthless raw information, before filing bogus receipts. After being detained by police at Manchester Airport after stepping off a flight from Malaga, he has now been found guilty of tax fraud, and given a nineyear prison sentence. Eden Noblett, of the HMRC Fraud Investigation Service, told UK media: “Butler thought he was clever, and that his scam was too sophisticated to be uncovered. But, he was not as clever as he believed. “This case should serve as a warning to anyone considering stealing taxpayer’s money. No matter how clever and sophisticated you think your fraud is, we will catch you.”
POLICE in Spain couldn’t believe their eyes when they stopped a car at a routine vehicle check and opened the boot. There, covered by a blanket, was a fully-grown, American black bear… stuffed! The Ursus Americanus
specimen was intercepted by officers of the Policía Foral, the regional police force for the autonomous community of Navarra, in the north of Spain. They have opened investigations against the car driver, who didn’t have the correct documentation for possessing a protected species, which led cops to believe it could be an illegal sale.

UNDERWHELMING, UK, economic data has limited the appeal of the pound, although both the euro and US dollar have also come under pressure, in the last two weeks.
13th April - 19th April 2018
UK PMIs limit GBP demand
As a result, the GBP/EUR exchange rate has climbed from 1.1366 to 1.1495. The GBP/USD exchange rate struggled to regain any particular momentum, meanwhile, hitting a fortnightly low of 1.3967, ahead of the weekend. There was little cause for confidence in the latest raft of UK PMIs, with the economy showing fresh signs of losing momentum. Investors were particularly concerned by the constructionsector’s return to a state of contraction, and a sharp drop in the services PMI. Taken together, these weaker results suggest that the UK economy faltered during the first quarter, potentially signalling a fresh dip in the gross domestic product. This, naturally, put the pound under fresh pressure, with weaker domestic growth
likely to discourage the Bank of England (BoE), as it weighs up the prospect of fresh, monetary tightening. Confidence in the US dollar, meanwhile, has fluctuated in response to mounting trade tensions between the US and China. With both sides outlining prospective tariffs of $50 billion, the US dollar slipped, with markets concerned by the negative implications this could have for the world’s largest economy. As the US unemployment rate also failed to fall from 4.1% to 4.0% for the second
month running, this helped to boost the GBP/USD exchange rate, ahead of the weekend. While German and Eurozone consumer-price-index figures failed to pick up as forecast in March, this limited the potential of the euro. As the European Central Bank (ECB) looks set to maintain a dovish bias for some time to come, the appeal of the single currency was, naturally, limited. The NIESR gross-domestic-product estimate for the first quarter of 2018 could put further pressure on the
pound. Any indication that the UK economy lost further momentum, in the first three months of the year, is likely to set GBP exchange rates on a fresh downtrend. Even so, the key source of pound volatility in the coming fortnight will be March’s UK consumer-price-index data. If inflationary pressure is found to have picked up once again, this could fuel bets that the Bank of England (BoE) will raise interest rates sooner, rather than later, to the benefit of the pound. Investors will continue to watch
commentary from ECB policymakers, meanwhile, hoping to see signs of a shift towards greater hawkishness. Should Eurozone data continue to fall short of expectations in the coming days, though, EUR exchange rates could see further losses. Meanwhile, any escalation in tensions between the US and China could drive GBP/USD exchange-rate volatility. Even if market risk appetite diminishes, this may not be enough to prevent the US dollar from softening, as confidence in the outlook of the US economy diminishes. Giant turbines can each power a house for a day
THE most powerful wind turbine in the world, capable of providing enough electricity to keep an average UK home going for a whole day, with a single turn of its blades, has been launched. The Vattenfall company has confirmed that the first of 11 turbines, in its European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), has been installed off Aberdeen. Project director Adam Ezzamel says the giant device’s turbines are each 191 metres tall, with each blade eight metres long, while the 164-metre rotor has a circumference larger
than that of the London Eye. But the Aberdeen Bay development, which will be Scotland’s largest offshore wind test and demonstration facility, and will trial next generation technology, has been hit by delays. These include legal challenges from US President Donald Trump, who claims the turbines will ruin the views from his Balmedie golf course. The installation of the initial turbine comes two weeks after a giant, floating crane laid the first of the foundations successfully, using a new style, never before employed in a commercial project. The turbine’s installation marks the first time an 8.8 MegaWatt model has been deployed, commercially, in
the offshore wind industry. The development will have two of these, together with nine 8.4MW turbines, and the developers say it will be able to produce the equivalent of more than 70% of Aberdeen’s domestic energy needs. Project director Ezzamel said: “The first turbine installation is a significant achievement, and credit to the diligence and engineering know-how of the project team and contractors. “For it to be one of the 8.8MW models makes it an even more momentous moment, because it further endorses the EOWDC as a world-class hub of offshore-wind innovation. And another 10 turbines will follow, off the coast of Scotland.
“We are very excited by the cutting-edge technology, deployed on all the turbines, and it is remarkable that just one rotation of the blades can power the average UK home for a day.” Jean Morrison, who chairs the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), said: “The EOWDC is leading the way, in terms of innovation, for the offshore-wind sector. “It’s a real coup for the region to have the world’s most powerful turbines on its doorstep, and it cements Aberdeen’s position as a major, global, energy city. It will also lead us to a greener future.” Stephanie Conesa, policy manager at Scottish Renewables, said: “Scotland is home to approximately 25% of Europe’s offshore-
wind resource, and projects like Vattenfall’s European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre in Aberdeen promise to harness this potential on a massive scale. “This ground-breaking facility leads Aberdeen’s ongoing transition, from fossil fuels to renewables, and reinforces Scotland’s global energy status.” She added: “As the windiest country in Europe, with some of the deepest waters, we should be proud of Scotland’s burgeoning, offshore-wind industry. “With many more promising offshore-wind sites on our doorstep, we hope to see similar facilities deployed in Scottish waters in future, so we can utilise fully our country’s natural resources.”

Britain In Bloom
Monday 16th April, BBC2, 18.30
Britain In Bloom focuses on fifteen different communities as they prepare to enter the RHS’s prestigious annual floral competition this summer. Presented by Chris Bavin, each episode tells the story of one community’s first preparations for Bloom right through to Judging Day itself. In episode one, Chris Bavin travels to Usk in Monmouthshire which is known as the Welsh Town of Flowers. The community there has been competing in Britain In Bloom for 36 years and regularly win Gold. But every year they have to come up with fresh ideas to retain their crown. This time the community is planning three key projects: first, they plan to fill the entire Town Square with a colourful new planting scheme. Secondly, the Gardening Gang at the local Primary School will be hoping to impress the judges with their vegetable garden. Lastly, the Bloomers plan to convert a drab concrete corner into a new beefriendly garden, but it’s a massive project and the whole community will need to lend a hand.
Stephen: The Murder That Changed A Nation
Tuesday 17th April, BBC1, 21.00
This landmark three-part documentary, from critically-acclaimed filmmakers Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees, and directed by James Rogan, plunges viewers into the story of Britain’s most notorious racially-motivated murder. 25 years ago, on 22 April, a black teenager, Stephen Lawrence was murdered at a bus stop by a group of white youths in an unprovoked attack. Failures in the police investigation meant the killers walked free. Stephen’s parents, Doreen and Neville Lawrence took up the fight for justice for their murdered son. This landmark three part series is the definitive account of a loving family, and a grieving mother, who simply would not take no for an answer, and who took on the establishment and forced it to change. The series charts 25 years of Doreen Lawrence’s struggle for justice through all its twists and turns; the police investigations, dramatic interventions from Nelson Mandela and the Daily Mail, revelations of institutional racism in the police and suspicions of corruption, bringing us right up to the present day in a case that remains active, with many questions still unanswered. It is told through the eyes of the people who have been directly involved, from the family (Doreen and Neville Lawrence) and Stephen’s friend who was with him on the night (Duwayne Brooks) to the police (former Police Commissioner Lord Paul Condon and Police Commissioner Cressida Dick) and politicians (Jack Straw and Theresa May). At the heart of the series is Stephen, the promising and much-loved 18-year-old, who was killed because of the colour of his skin. Neverbefore-seen footage and photos of Stephen, along with testimony from his family, friends and neighbours help to capture for the first time the devastating tragedy of that fateful night 22 April 1993. Episode one focuses on the run-up to Stephen’s murder and the police investigation that follows. As the suspects remain free, tip-offs from the community worry Doreen and Neville as to why the police are not making arrests. A visit from Nelson Mandela seems to prompt action. But Stephen’s friend Duwayne, also a victim of the attack, gets into difficulty with the police. When the charges against the suspects are dropped, Doreen realises she must take action into her own hands.

Britain’s Biggest Warship BBC2, 20.00
13:30 ................... The Simpsons
13th April - 19th April 2018
HMS Queen Elizabeth is the largest and most advanced warship ever constructed in Britain. This three-part series for BBC Two follows the ultra-modern super aircraft carrier as she is taken to sea for the first time on gruelling and risky sea trials that push ship and crew to breaking point. Taking viewers on an epic voyage of discovery, from construction in the building yard to the rigorous trials in which everything is tested for the first time – Britain’s Biggest Warship tells the extraordinary story of a super-carrier that will be in service for the next 50 years. Embedded within the ship’s company of 700 sailors, award-winning filmmaker Chris Terrill captures an intimate and personal portrait of life on board as the men and women learn the intricacies of a warship that will change the way Britain goes to war. In this first episode, sailors begin to arrive in Rosyth dockyard in Scotland where the ship is still in construction. It is early 2016 and HMS Queen Elizabeth is nearing completion. Captain Jerry Kyd and his 700 sailors are assembling. Their mission? To take the prototype warship to sea for the first time. Although leaving the dockyard and getting out to sea will be no easy task. Before sailing, the crew have to undergo rigorous fire and flood training, but suddenly they are faced with the real thing. Has the training paid off? How will they get the super carrier out of the dockyard sea gate with only 30 centimetres clearance either side? And how will they sail her under the Forth road and rail bridges? HMS Queen Elizabeth is taller than both. With unprecedented access, this series – three years in the making – tells the behind thescenes story of what makes HMS Queen Elizabeth so unique and how her crew are working together to breathe life into Britain’s Biggest Warship.

Heir Hunters BBC1, 11.00
Michael Buerk joins the Heir Hunters team as presenter for the new series, as the genealogy detectives aim to reunite valuable estates with their rightful heirs. The first episode of the new series looks into the case of Melvin Barker, a retired postman who owned his own property in central London. In addition to this, his older brother bequeathed to him nearly £300,000 in his will and when the Heir Hunters team do some further digging, they find out that Melvin’s total estate is worth over £1.2 million. Will the team be able to track down the rightful heir? In searching for beneficiaries to his estate the Heir Hunters also uncover a tragedy in the family after discovering an uncle who worked as a trawler man was part of the crew of a ship which went missing at sea, leaving its 16 sailors presumed dead. Meanwhile, there’s also the tricky case of Trevor Rawlinson where some good old fashioned detective work by the Heir Hunters reveals a huge family tree.

Great Ormond Street: The Child First and Always? ITV1, 22.45
Great Ormond Street Hospital is a national treasure, synonymous with the highest standards of care and medical research. But one department’s treatment of a controversial disease has troubled fellow medical professionals for years. For more than a year ITV’s current affairs programme Exposure has investigated why the hospital’s Gastroenterology Department has stopped taking new referrals for most conditions. The film reveals some children were over-treated with potentially harmful drugs, interviews families about their child’s treatment and asks whether the hospital could have revealed more to former and current patients about a series of critical reviews.

This week we’re revisiting two sets of house-hunters for whom compromise was something of a dirty word. Both searches took Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp far and wide - but nothing made the grade. In 2014, Phil was helping Lia and Andrew find a home for a growing family in south east London, but it would take Kirstie to get to the bottom of Andrew’s reluctance with the search. In 2015, Phil was helping Sue and Allan, who’d just returned to the UK from Australia. They had an ever changing wish list for their home, and were searching across Surrey and Hampshire. Phil’s back to find out what it was that finally hit their sweet spots.

TributoFest Tenerife The next TributoFest concert is in a couple of weeks’ time on Friday, 27th April at Castillo San Miguel. This time, it features an amazing 7-piece band who are a tribute to the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band of all time… The Rolling Stones.
The cleverly-named Not The Rolling Stones are the mostauthentic Stones tribute band in the world, having headlined festivals all over the globe, and are currently on a nationwide, UK, theatre tour, starring in The Rolling Stones story. Their front man, Mike Jagger, is rated as the best lookalike and sound-alike Mick Jagger around, and even Frank Skinner said he was better live than the real one! Canarian Weekly took the opportunity to catch up with their enigmatic front man, to find out more! CW: At what point did you realise you looked like Mick Jagger, and could make a living out of it? MJ: It was a slow process, really, and started with the look-alike angle which has been part of my life since I was 16, although I didn’t perform as him at that age; that came a lot later on! CW: How long have you been doing it? And did you perform before? MJ: No, I didn’t perform before; I’m a one-trick pony, and have only performed in this role. I’ve been doing it now for the last 15 years or so. CW: Who are your musical influences? MJ: There’s only one… The Rolling Stones! It may sound a bit tacky, but it’s true, although my formative years were also spent listening to Lou Reed, David Bowie and Led Zeppelin. CW: How did the band get together? MJ: I put an advert in the London paper Loot, saying “Mick seeks Keith”, and got a reply from someone setting up a Stones/Faces themed band. It all went quite quickly from there. CW: What criteria did you use in selecting the tracks for Not The Rolling Stones, to perform at your gigs? MJ: We pretty much play the obvious hits, so if it’s not on 40 Licks, it probably doesn’t get played! Having said that, we do slip in the odd curveball now and then, but, very often, that depends on the age of our audience. CW: Which one of the classic
Stones hits are you sick of performing? MJ: Hahaha….I love them all/ not going to say! The honest truth is that, if an audience is loving it, we enjoy performing it, however unlikely it is to be on our Spotify list. CW: Which is your favourite Stones song to perform? MJ: A 1969 song called Monkey Man, but it rarely makes the set list as it’s not one of the better-known tracks; but it’s got a great intro. Jumping Jack Flash
is hard to get bored with, though. CW: Where have you performed, and which gig or NTRS moment stands out in your mind? MJ: We’ve been lucky enough to play all over the world, from Canada in the West, to Oman in the East, and all points between! There have been so many high points, but playing an open-air gig on the promenade in Monaco will take some beating. CW: Tell us about the current
UK tour you are doing with The Rolling Stones story? MJ: It was written by a theatre company, and we were asked to take part, so we thought, why not! It’s slightly more angled towards a seated, theatre audience than our
normal gigs, and we’ve all but completed the Spring tour for this year. The reaction has been absolutely amazing, and it’s been great playing some fabulous theatres, old and new; so yeah, a lot of fun. CW: How do you spend your time when you’re not being Mick Jagger? What is a typical day for you? MJ: Very normal, really…. get the kids off to school, then easily a couple of hours keeping on top of admin, emails, texts etc from the band or theatre show. Cars are my hobby; I keep our family fleet on the road, and am restoring a classic in my spare time. Apart from that, I’m also a bit of a racing-car game addict. But, if the wife asks, it’s mainly housework on non-gig days! CW: What’s on your iPod? MJ: Bob Dylan, Waterboys, Lucinda Williams and Bruce Springsteen. CW: Finally, have you seen the Stones live, have they seen you live, and have you met any of them? MJ: I’ve seen them live three times, but, to be honest, I’m not a huge fan of enormo-gigs, and I prefer smaller, moreintimate venues. Once, I was in a smaller ground, near the front, and that was superb. We know that they have seen our videos, but I’ve no idea if any of them have snuck into a gig! A few years ago, I was asked to be in a video for Mick, but, unfortunately, was unable to do it, as I was working abroad on a TV job. I was very miffed. Mike and Not The Rolling Stones are LIVE at Castillo San Miguel on Friday, 27th April with Adi Brooks as David Bowie. Tickets are from only 29 euros online from www.ticketea.com, www.tomaticket.es, or see www.tributofest.com for a list of outlets near you.

Accion del Sol News
Learning the ropes! THE use of colour is an integral part of any interior- design scheme, particularly so with the walls.
IT has been a very busy week at the refuge because we have had a group of students from Germany, who have been participating in our educational programme.
We believe that this is the best way forward in helping animal welfare. The students were involved in all aspects of looking after the dogs, as well as learning about basic, veterinary
care. The dogs were very happy to have the extra attention, as they desperately crave love and affection. Please remember that our next event is tomorrow (Saturday) at 1pm, and we're inviting you to join us in walking some of the gorgeous dogs at the refuge. This will be followed by cakes and drinks. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars
and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol
This is partly because they make up the biggest area, and, whatever colour or pattern you choose, will dictate how the rest will look, or come together. Paint is one of the cheapest tools you can use to create mood and feeling, and also one of the easiest to change. Nevertheless, it makes sense to do your research before you start, and find out how you can use colour to your advantage. All interior designers have to understand the colour wheel, a diagram showing the primary colours of red, yellow and blue. When you combine these, you get the secondary colours of green, orange and purple. Mixing the primary colours with secondary ones gives you tertiary shades, and complementary colours are opposite each other in the colour wheel. You don’t need to know all this detail, but it will help you to realise that the cooler side of the colour chart includes blues and greens, and the warmer ones are yellows and oranges. Bearing in mind that colour can create an optical illusion, you can use it to your advantage. For example, bright and light colours will create a feeling of more space, and darker colours will make the room look smaller. That doesn’t mean you can’t use a dramatic colour if you want to,
but you should probably limit it to one wall or area, so it doesn’t overpower. If you want to make a room appear larger, for example, choose from the cooler area of the colour wheel. Paint all the walls the same colour so no one wall is dominant, and use a similar, or toning, colour for flooring. If you want a room to look higher, paint the lower part of the wall in a darker colour than that at the top. Obviously, the reversal of this idea will make the ceiling appear lower. If you have a large or very cold space, and you want to make it cosier, choose colours from the warm side of the wheel. A sunny yellow will certainly brighten a room, but don’t use too much of it, or you might need sunglasses! If you have a room that is longer than it is wide, try painting the two shorter walls in a darker tone, because it will create the illusion of making the area more square. Colours also play with your emotions, albeit subconsciously. We’ve covered this subject before, but, for example, fast-food res-
taurants use a lot of red because it is the colour of danger, passion and high emotions, which doesn’t encourage you to linger very long. At the other end of the scale, greens, pale blues and creams are calming, and are likely to be used in waiting rooms and hospitals. Not everyone perceives colour in the same way, so these ideas should only be used as guidelines, but consider whether you want areas to be peaceful or dramatic, and choose your colours accordingly. Of course, many of us have a holiday home in Tenerife, and may not have access to tools and items needed to decorate. Also, you may not have much storage if you buy everything you need, and only use it once. Many interior-decoration companies will also offer a decorating service, so you can choose the colour scheme from the comfort of your own property for reference, and let someone else do the hard work, perhaps even while you are away from the island. All items and services mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789 729.

Entertainment
13th April - 19th April 2018
37 CW
Now that’s entertainment!
WE are Keddy’s Entertainment, and are excited to say that we will be writing for the Canarian Weekly, on a regular basis. We’ll be featuring acts, talking about venues and events, and reporting on hot-spot, questionnaire feedback, plus everything and anything regarding entertainment. Our writers are the fabulous Obsession Duo, featuring Chrissie on sax, vocals and percussion, and Ray on bass guitar and vocals. We thought we’d kick things off by introducing you to some of the team at Keddy’s Entertainment. Ray, from Obsession, simply cannot believe it has been some 23 years since they were doing the pubs and clubs, in the South of England. An opportunity came up in the summer of 1996 to go to Abu Dhabi, and, from there, to Doha and Dubai. A couple of years in Jersey were followed by residencies in Madeira, Portugal, Majorca, Ibiza, Cyprus and Marbella, as well as four years in Japan. Several years were then spent on cruise ships, working in the Caribbean, South America and all over Europe, before ending up here in Tenerife, all these years later! Here is a little bit of background on Ray and Chrissie, before “Obsession Duo” was formed. Ray was a member of Mungo Jerry for many years, enjoying worldwide success with hits like “In the Summertime”, which spent eight weeks at the top of the UK charts. This was in between working with David Essex in the film “That’ll Be The Day”, and playing bass on the smash-hit single “Rock On”.
In the Eighties, Ray had a top-40 hit as the singer with the band UK Players, with the song “Love’s Gonna Get You”, and was privileged to have supported the legendary Marvin Gaye on tour. Some very enjoyable years were spent with a band called Magic, who are still performing today with their five-part, vocal tributes to Queen, ELO, and Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Chrissie, always known as “The Wild One”, has retained her legendary, distinctive hair-styles over the years. She began her musical career playing the oboe (one of the hardest musical instruments to learn!) in youth wind bands. Later, in the Eighties, punk music took her direction on to playing the saxophone. She was influenced by artistes such as Toyah Wilcox, with her bright-pink hair, which soon became part of Chrissie’s fabulous image! She has played in many original groups over the years, ending up with a seven-piece reggae
band supporting many well-known names, from reggae icons “Black Roots”, to Sixties’ legend Billy J. Kramer! Working overseas in Dubai with Obsession Duo enabled her to undertake voice-over work for Dubai’s famous shopping festival. Chrissie plays alto, soprano and tenor saxophone, as well as percussion. While performing in Japan, the duo realised that the Carpenters were the favourite artistes out there at the time. Because Chrissie’s voice sounded very similar to that of the late Karen Carpenter, she was soon singing most of their greatest hits! Nowadays, Obsession Duo seem to have a “niche”, twisting classic songs into a jazzy, lounge, chill-out style, which sits wonderfully in restaurants and terraces for a laid-back atmosphere. Mind you, there’s always the chance to “rock up” for a private party, when requested! Now, on to the rest of the team, starting with Natalie
Stafford, our Tenerife entertainment manager, who works closely alongside Adam Keddy. Natalie has a wealth of experience in the entertainment industry, having studied performing arts, receiving one of the highest qualifications at that level. She attended the Arden School of Theatre in Manchester for three years, studying a wide range of singing, dancing and acting styles, and qualified with a 2:1 BA (Hons.) in Musical Theatre: Professional Stage Practice. She has worked, extensively, all over Europe with leading tour operators, and now oversees the operation’s arm for Keddy’s Entertainment within Tenerife. She also performs at night in one of our shows, Sweet Sensations. She is, indeed, a very busy lady. Louise, our senior show manager, performs in the show alongside Natalie. She is our talent scout, and always on the look-out for new artistes to join Keddy’s Entertainment.
Our events’ manager is the one-and-only Jenny Tipton, who is busy with children’s parties and managing events. Just recently, when she wasn’t presenting the brightest breakfast show, on Oasis FM, Tenerife’s No.1 British radio station, Jenny and the team supported the Tenerife auditions for The X Factor (UK). Also known as Jenny T, she travelled Europe as an entertainer, for over eight years, but she is now happily settled in Tenerife. Talking of being settled in Tenerife, and last but not least, it’s our senior entertainment consultant Mr. Van Elliot. He was the first person to bring entertainment to the island, in 1978, at Ten Bel, Costa del Silencio, and is a true professional and font of priceless knowledge. The management team at Keddy’s Entertainment has many years of experience in all aspects of entertainment, supporting director Adam Keddy, who has had successful careers with leading, major tour operators. Adam started as an entertainer at the age of 19, which led him into senior management for TUI UK and Ireland. At the Keddy’s helm, he is assisted by a brilliant mix of talent, generating the overall success of Keddy’s Entertainment in its continued growth. We are proud to be associated with Oasis FM and the Canarian Weekly, the marketing leaders here in sunny Tenerife. So, for all your entertainment needs, visit www. keddysentertainment.com or call the office between 9.30am-5.30pm, Monday to Friday, on 922 096975. Until next time, lap up the sun and all the entertainment offered here, on this wonderful island we call our home.

Seeing is believing! THE Torrente Ruin Pub, in the heart of Playa de Las Americas, opens on 5th May to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first part of the Torrente films, in cooperation with Santiago Segura, the famous, Spanish film director and actor. But prepare yourself for the fact that we are not a regular restaurant or bar! We provide the finest and unique transition between street-food restaurant and cocktail bar. Nothing is ordinary, but extraordinary, because everything is based on our
own recipes which have been developed with the highest degree of competence, and spiced with a lot of joy and passion. It is a place that perfectly combines the true Torrentiano feeling and the Ruin Pub ambience. At first glance, the atmosphere may seem somewhat disassociated from reality, but this was our goal when we started renovating in 2017. Coming here makes you feel as though you are part of the film, because of the dozens of paintings, quotes, decorations and sculptures
that come from the movie. The name “Ruin Pub”, if you have not heard of it, is a world-famous Hungaricum, straight from Hungary. It’s also possible to take
home a piece of the Torrente Ruin Pub. We have a merchandise shop for this purpose, so there’s no need to break any walls! There is also a playhouse
for our little guests to have fun, and we are completely disabled-friendly, so the doors are open to everyone. The staff speak several languages, but gestures are always an option! Don’t worry - we’ll understand you! So join the opening party on 5th May, and be part of the experience. We will be opening at 4pm, and Santiago Segura’s speech and the inauguration begin at 5pm. Tickets are limited, and are available via www. tomaticket.es Team Torrente - our experience is our passion.

Digging deep, aiming high! CD Tenerife 2 Sevilla Atletico 0 By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
IT was hardly a sparkling performance, but this latest success by Tenerife was a gem to the mammoth 19,123 crowd.
Rock-bottom Sevilla were stubborn, and it took the expectant home side 68 minutes to make the breakthrough. But they nailed the victory, putting themselves just two points off a promotion playoff spot, with eight league games remaining. Suspended Bryan Acosta was sorely missed, but veteran captain Suso rolled back the years with a classic performance of pride and determination. The expectancy levels were sky-high, but Tenerife’s first-half performance was at ground zero, top-scorer Longo failing to click in front of the net. Suso showed his intentions with an early ball across the face of the goal, which eluded the Sevilla defence and fell to Alex Mula. But his soft shot was no problem for the keeper.
His counterpart, Dani Hernandez, made sure that Sevilla weren’t party-poopers, scooping up a long-range strike at his post, casually. Again, he was as steady as a rock. Luis Milla has become an extremely important player for Tenerife. He gets through so much work, and has good vision, which enables him to spark off attacks from nothing. A smart ball in from Milla was headed down by Casadesus, and Alex Mula tried to curl it around a defender, only to find the outside of the post. The final ball just
wasn’t there for Tenerife, but calm heads were needed as they took the break, frustrated by the goal-less score. Fans don’t need much excuse to give the match officials some stick, so when the ref and his assistant got their wires in a twist at the start of the second half, the crowd offered plenty of helpful advice. It took them five minutes to get their technology working, and, apparently, at one point, they were getting taxi bookings from the town-centre rank! Back at the game, Tenerife
Golf
were looking a bit better, and Mula, making more progress on the left, managed a shot at the keeper, followed by setting Longo up for an easy finish. The Italian striker was caught in two minds about whether to tuck it in at the far post with his foot, or head. But, as the ball rose, he made a poor effort to connect with his foot, and the chance was gone. A change was needed, and, when Malbasic replaced Longo, the move inspired a goal within a few minutes. Dani’s quick thinking
turned a routine catch into a long ball up to Suso. He cut inside two defenders and passed to Mula, who, though half-connecting with the ball only, sliced it past the keeper. That settled the nerves, and encouraged the search for a second goal. It came when another long, upfield hoof found Malbasic in a duel with the Sevilla keeper, who had made a wild dash, far outside his area. The Serbian striker kept his cool, dribbled round the keeper and avoided a covering defender, before burying the ball in the back of the net. Even torrential rain couldn’t dampen the crowd’s wild celebrations; a win’s a win, no matter how unconvincing. On the down-side, centreback Aveldaño, who has been instrumental in three games without conceding, was booked for a high tackle and misses the match tomorrow (Saturday) at Cultural Leonesa, kick-off 7pm. A big plus, though, was the 13 minutes played by sub Paco Montañes, following his five-month, injury layoff. The more the merrier, please, as suspensions and injuries continue to hound the squad.
CD Marino
Charitable Rabbits
Home revival needed Tenisca 2 CD Marino 0 THE Costa Adeje Rabbits Society, formed in 2006, now have a blossoming membership of 80 golfers, comprising mixed nationalities and varied abilities. The Society play at Costa Adeje Los Lagos golf course, and, each year, members raise funds for various Tenerife charities. This year they collected 3,000 euros, dividing it evenly between Cancer Bus charity KM Solidario and the WFL breast-cancer Foundation.
MARINO, stuck in a bad run of results, will see this Sunday’s noon game, at home against Union Sur Yaiza, as a chance to move away from 13th place in their Tercera Division section. Last Sunday, they had a long, fruitless journey to Tenisca, on the island of La Palma. A 30th-minute goal
from Gabi left them a tough task, and Sota ensured the home win with a second, after 59 minutes. Tenisca crept a little further above Marino in the league, but Lanzarote side Union Sur are catchable… if Marino can improve on the two draws and a defeat in their last, three, home games.

The 10.8 km race was won by Ruben Velasquez in a time of 36 minutes and 33 seconds. The ladies’ winner was Dacil Hernandez in 41.14. On to the big 21 km run, which was won by Philip Kiplagat of Kenya in a sizzling 1.06.42, with Aroa Merino of Lanzarote taking the ladies’ honours in 1.15.42. who clocked 14.57 followed in by Joel Gregorio Garcia in a spritely 15.23 minutes. Even those not in touch with the pace setters will have special memories, plus their competitors’ medals. There will be plenty more running events in the Arona calendar, because the Saturday sports fair whet a few new appetities for sport in general, and running in particular.
Wheels on fire! IT’S not quite what you would expect to see outside your local place of worship on a Sunday, but Los Cristianos church plaza has become a popular setting for regular skate-boarding championships.
taking place from 4pm, and the young guns will be riding the ramps and showing off their best moves, while a DJ will provide plenty of suitable music. It is the first event of three this year, and the other two take place in July and September. If you think it will be just a bit of fun, think again! There is a 200-euro first prize for this opening contest, and it goes up to 600 euros for each of the following events.

And they’re still Legends! By Andy Maughan THE Legends A team, not for the first time, have taken the honours by topping the League with an impressive 47 points. Runners-up in the First Division are Legends Elite, but the third place, between Nauta Nomads and Legends B, is yet to be decided.

Second Division champions are Yelas Travellers, with a whopping 55 points. Gio excelled for the runners-up, with an excellent victory in the singles. But, sadly, they won just one more point as Mitch and his boys ran out 5-2 winners, despite their 336-point handicap. Many thanks to The Loch-In for hosting

Missing Mat leads to a double defeat
the cup competition would end with the two semis and the final, over the weekend of 19th and 20th May. And San Isidro is in contention to host this showpiece finale, which features live coverage on Spanish national television.
clearly, he was not matchfit and played barely two minutes, without scoring. The quarters showed a steady downward slide as Tenerife were overwhelmed 28-21, 2814, 17-28, and 15-29. There was some resistance from the home bench, American-Nigerian Josh Akognon top-scoring with 22 points, and Tim Abromaitis was good value for his 17 points. But the squad really is looking thin these days, and Tenerife seem destined to drop even further than their current ninth position in the league.
TIGHTENING up in defence is top of the agenda for Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife, who have now conceded seven goals in the last two games. And keeper Pili Gonzalez and her defence will be striving for a clean sheet at home against Madrid CFF on Sunday, kick-off noon, in San Isidro. The goal rushes came against the top two teams, Atletico Madrid, who beat them 4-0 in San Isidro, and a 3-1 defeat at Barcelona. Madrid CFF are in seventh place and shouldn’t pose such an attacking threat. But Granadilla, who will be taking nothing for granted, are willing to work hard to ensure they finish strongly in their last five, regular league games.

They sit in fourth spot, and must finish in the top eight to qualify for the endof-season Copa del Reina (Queen’s Cup). There could be an even bigger reward if they make the draw for the home-andaway quarter-finals, because
JUST when Iberostar Tenerife were getting back on track at Malaga last Sunday, an ankle injury to Mateusz Ponitka sidelined the free-scoring Polish player after nine minutes, which led to a 72-62 defeat. With their star player unable to return for Wednesday’s home game against Delteco Gipuzkoa, there was more suffering to come as they lost 88-92. Despite the injury blow, though, Tenerife put up a defiant show at Malaga with the quarter scores going 24-11, 8-20, 26-18, and 1413. Greek player Kostas Vasilieladis pitched in with 13 points to lead the away scoring, but it wasn’t enough. Tenerife tried to boost the squad, ahead of the home midweek game, by recalling American Davin White. But,
Another shot at glory
ARONA Tenerife Sur, not content with basking in the glory of a second-place finish in the Spanish Superleague, are now looking for success in the endof-season, top-four play-offs.
Their semi-final, against Dimurol, stands at one match each in the best-offive series, after two clashes on their opponents’ La Laguna home court, ended all-square. The action moves to Los Cristianos tomorrow (Saturday) at 7pm, and Sunday at 6pm, followed by a decider (if needed) in La Laguna on Wednesday.
Last Friday’s first game, over five sets, was won 3-2 by Arona, with scores of 25-19, 25-16, 1925, 22-25, and 8-15. Dimurol hit back in the second match with a 3-1 home success on Sunday, winning 26-16, 25-23, 23-25, and 2520. It’s all very cut-and-thrust, but these are the pick of the teams from a long season, even though the league
champions have now been crowned. Arona produced the standout player of the weekend, with Poland’s Elzbyeta Nykiel being voted the MVP of the games. There’s still a lot of life left in the season, and Arona will be hoping to go one better than their final defeat in the Copa del Reina, earlier in the campaign.
