Keep fit, on two wheels Continued from Front The idea comes from the Council, in collaboration with the General Traffic department. They are implementing a European Project, named Project Stars, which hopes to persuade kids to stay healthy. Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez says the project is aimed at schools and students, and its goal is to encourage safe travel for youngsters, on foot, or on a saddle. The scheme is focused on children between the ages of six and 19, although the finger is also pointed at parents and teachers alike. The project’s aim, primarily,

is to promote health benefits, but another good reason is that it will improve traffic congestion, as well as traffic flow within the capital’s city centre. Mobility Councillor Vaida Gonzalez says there is a lot of public interest, and that feedback and collaboration from the traffic department is “fantastic”. She also believes that, with firm co-operation, the Stars Project will soon be underway. The Council, depending on the interest and outcome, has pledged to give safety training to specialised technicians and the Local Police. In addition to road security, there are also plans to improve the security

and safety in school surroundings, as well as teaching road-safety and awareness in the schools themselves. The city is already proceeding with road signs in the urban areas of Santa Cruz, so that people can see, and be more aware of, the bikefriendly roads, and those that are not. Mayor Jose Manuel says: “It’s our goal to turn Santa Cruz into a bicycle-friendly city.” But he acknowledges that there could be some difficulties, with obstacles along the way. Nevertheless, he is optimistic that the city will be safe, and well-signposted enough, to enjoy pedalling around on a bike. But Santa Cruz has a lot

of catching-up to do to achieve the progress of other Spanish cities, such as Madrid and Barcelona. And Las Palmas already has five plans underway, which, directly or indirectly, involve bicycles as a means of transport, in the Gran Canaria capital.

Find a Sunday treat for mum WHETHER she is called Mama, Ma, Mum, Mutter or Mother, this Sunday is her day in Spain, as we celebrate Spanish Mother’s Day. And Adeje’s commercial zone, along with the Town Hall, have designed a campaign to encourage you to shop locally, under the slogan “My Mum is the best!” The Adeje Commercial Zone Association (ZAC) is running a series of promotional activities for shoppers, and, this week,

Problem plane’s pilot says: go if you want!

THE captain of a plane, bound for Spain from Gran Canaria, gave passengers a chance to leave the flight, following an aborted takeoff, as well as technical problems, which took three hours to fix.

The Vueling plane returned to its stand after the pilot abandoned the initial take-off, to enable engineers to check it out. They were told by the flight crew that there were some “slight electrical problems”. An hour later, they discovered there was also a computer failure. Once that was fixed, the pilot announced over the public address system that the plane was “apparently normal”. But he also

told them they could disembark if they wanted to. Around 20 people decided on the latter course, which delayed the flight further because their luggage had to be off-loaded before the aircraft’s departure to Bilbao, in northern Spain. The pilot added: “We cannot force anyone to stay on board if they don’t feel safe.” The flight was scheduled for a 6.45pm departure, although it didn’t take off for another three hours. And when it did, the plane was then diverted to another destination because the Bilbao runway was closed for repairs. Finally, the plane landed safely, in the early hours of the morning in Vitoria, and passengers were transferred by bus to Bilbao.

Mayor Jose Manuel adds: “Here’s hoping that all the commitments, which have been agreed this week over several meetings, become reality… sooner than later!” The other hope must be that his grand plans are adopted throughout schools here in the South.

it has mums in mind. So, if you are thinking of buying her something special, or taking her out for lunch or dinner, why not stay local, and promote Adeje’s economy and jobs into the bargain. Adeje has a superb selection of small and medium shops, with a range of excellent products on sale. It is also closer to home, and, with the campaign, there is also a chance to win prizes, or even a cruise. The competition itself runs throughout May, and you can enter by shopping in any of the participating stores.

National outcry as heartless thugs are given much lighter sentence

Teenager raped by five-man gang still awaits true justice TENS of thousands of people throughout Spain have been protesting bitterly, since the alleged rapist “Wolf Pack” were sentenced by a court last week on a lesser charge of “sexual abuse”. The five Sevilla men, one a Guardia Civil officer, and another a soldier, were accused of gang-raping a Madrid teenager two years ago, in the early hours, during Pamplona’s “Running of the Bulls” festival’s nine-day span. They then boasted about their “conquest” by spreading videos of their inexcusable actions, via a group on WhatsApp. Following a highly-anticipated trial in Navarre, criticised widely as being more of a “cross-examination of the victim”, then just 18, the accused were found guilty of the lesser charge, despite their own, contradictory, video proof. Guardia officer Antonio Manuel Guerrero, plus José Ángel Prenda, Alfonso Cabezuelo, Jesús Escudero and Ángel Boza, were each sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment, and five years’ probation, as well as being ordered, individually, to pay the victim 10,000 euros. Guerrero was also fined 900 euros for stealing the girl’s phone after the brutal attack. After the verdict, protesters in Pamplona shouted: “This justice is bull****,” as well as “It’s not abuse, it’s rape,” and “If they touch one of us, they touch all of us.” A noisy demonstration also took place outside Madrid’s Justice Ministry the same evening. The prosecution had been seeking 22 years for each attacker, and 250,000 euros in compensation to the victim.

But the five-strong gang received just nine years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of “continuous sexual abuse”. That carries a lesser sentence than rape because it does not involve violence or intimidation. The young woman had told a Madrid court how the five men, who called themselves the “Wolf Pack” in a WhatsApp group, took turns to assault her in the lobby of a secluded building, during the festival. The victim admitted she had kissed one of the defendants willingly. She was walking towards his car when the other four men joined them, and took her to the secluded spot. “When we arrived at the building entrance, I became so scared,” she told the court. “They took off my pants and bra, and started unbuttoning my top. Then they grabbed my jaw.” She said she was fro-

zen with fear, and didn’t know what else to do but submit. “I just closed my eyes,” she added. “I was in a state of shock.” She said the men talked to each other only, while they took turns raping her. “I could not even look at their faces. I only remember seeing their tattoos. I remember them laughing and one of them saying, ‘Hey man, it’s my turn!’” The woman told the court she’d had nightmares and insomnia ever since, and had periods of deep depression, in which she “did not want to do anything”. The stricken teenager, later found crying on a bench, described her attackers to the police, who arrested the five men, the following day. As news of the ruling emerged, protests began to take shape across the country, mostly led by women’s groups.

In Madrid, police estimated that 10,000 people congregated in front of the Justice Ministry. “We are incensed that rape in Spain costs nine years,” said Carlota Álvarez, of the Madrid Feminist Movement, which organised the demonstration. Seville protestors held up signs reading, “Sister, I believe you”, while 36-yearold Aurora Adalid protested with her five-month-old daughter in her arms. She said she felt defenceless and vulnerable, and did not want her daughter to experience fear. “I don’t know what it is that they consider violence,” she said. Rocío Bedmar, 61, added: “It seems that women cannot go out partying, because, if they do, that seems to give men the right to rape them.” In Barcelona, 6,000 people stood inside Sant Jaume square holding signs that read: “Whatever they say, it’s not abuse, it’s gang rape!” Barcelona Mayor Ada Co-

lau, who joined the protest, had earlier tweeted: “Sister, #josiqueetcrec [I believe you], and I am angry that after the violence of multiple rape, you now have to suffer the violence of #patriarchaljustice. “You are not alone. Today, there will be thousands of us taking to the streets and joining our voices to yours.” Eugenia and Susana, two 18-year-old students protesting in A Coruña, in the north-western region of Galicia, said: “She has been judged more harshly than the men. Under these conditions, nobody will dare file a complaint.” And Elisa David, a prison worker protesting outside Valencia City Hall, said she was shocked at the ruling. She added: “I teach at the prison and I am constantly seeing extremely-long sentences being served by people who have barely done anything. So this ruling seems like a joke to me.”

Tenerife target for Wonder Woman 2

5 CW

Vet used puppies to smuggle his heroin

SHE can fight off the super villains, but the iconic, Amazon warrior of DC Comics cannot fight off the attractions of Tenerife.

The hotly-anticipated, Wonder Woman 2 sequel will be premiered in November 2019, following filming in Tenerife later this year, after initial work in the UK this month. More-mature readers may still yearn for the rather cheesey TV series from the 1970s, starring Lynda Carter. But Gal Gadot made the red-white-and-blue outfit her own on the big screen, last year. America director Patty Jenkins will be behind the camera for the latest adventures of the Warner Brothers’ saga. Apart from her eye-catching, figure-hugging costume, Wonder Woman has an invisble plane… look out for that at Tenerife South airport! It’s another big scalp for the Tenerife Film Commision, following on from blockbusters like Clash of the Titans, and Jason Bourne, which have, recently, featured extended filming on the island.

A VET, arrested in Spain for, allegedly, trafficking heroin inside puppies, is facing trial in the United States. Authorities claim a drugtrafficking gang used dogs to send liquid heroin from Colombia to the US. Venezuelan veterinarian Andres Lopez Elorza, 33, was arrested in Spain in 2015 in connection with a raid at a Colombian clinic he ran. There, authorities found three kilos of heroin implanted inside three puppies. The vet, who has now been extradited to New York, was expected to appear in Brooklyn federal court this week.

Expats need their own MPs here, says teacher A SCOTTISH expat, who is calling on the UK Government to introduce MPs for Britons living abroad, has already launched a petition for support. Alastair Stewart, a schoolteacher in Almeria, has attracted more than 1,000 signatures so far, and the 30-year-old, from Edinburgh, said his motivation came from a “profound sense of powerlessness” following the EU referendum. “Brexit has shown that, when things go foul, you need someone,” said Mr Stewart, a former Scottish Parliament press officer. The only point-of-contact now for expats is the British Embassy, or their constituent MP, back in the UK. “The problem is that there’s a massive concentration of expatriates living on the Costa del Sol and Spain,” he said. “But they’re scattered from around 650 constituencies in the UK, and, even if we all band together, we have no direct person with whom to speak. That’s 650 different MPs… and 650 ways to waste their time!” Mr Stewart, who divides his time between Spain, Edinburgh and Macedonia, believes there should

be UK MPs representing expats in every foreign country. Other countries, including Germany and France, already have MPs who represent the expats living there. The teacher aims to collect 100,000 signatures, which is the required number for a petition to be considered for debate in Parliament.

The Cross of ages

Woman gored to death

A WOMAN died after being pinned against a barrier and gored in a bullring in southern Spain. She was watching a “toros ensogados” (angry bull) event, which has been celebrated since the16th Century at Beas de Segura, in JaenJaen, Andalucia. The event, which forms part of the San Marcos festival, attracts thousands of visitors. The Barcelona-born victim, who lived in Girona, died in hospital from her injuries. Police believe the woman was not participating in the event, actively, but was actually trying to leave the bullring when the incident occurred. The town’s San Marcos celebrations are designated an event of tourist interest in Andalucia.

Simon says Yes to gold!

SIMON MANLEY, the British Ambassador to Spain, has been awarded a gold medal to recognise his work as a “great promoter of relations” between the UK and Spain. He was presented with a golden shield by the provincial government of Malaga, to mark the “Day of the Province” in a glittering ceremony. in Monday. The 50-year-old father-of-three became Ambassador to Spain in October 2013, after joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1990, and working his way up through the ranks.

Parents’ costly boozers

IF you are still wondering why floral crosses popped up all over the South yesterday (Thursday), the answer is simple: it was Día de la Cruz (Day of the Cross). Many of Adeje’s villages were busy, making these

delightful crosses, with resident associations decorating them, as they do every year. Artistic Heritage Councillor Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, said: “This is a very old tradition, which we have revived in recent years,

thanks, mainly, to the enthusiasm and participation of our resident associations. “The Council has been delighted to work with them, donating the wooden bases and helping with the material needed for the 20 crosses on display.”

Our future looks green UNDER-AGE drinkers could soon land their parents with fines as a new law is being considered in Spain. The probability follows a report from the Mixed Committee on Drug Problems, which has proposed new measures to crack down on minors’ binge-drinking. The tradition among Spanish minors of drinking in the street, known as botellon, is blamed for the growing problem of under-age drinking. A new law, regulating alcohol, is almost sure to be introduced, as the Spanish Health Ministry assesses the report’s findings. But the document suggests that teens and their parents could choose to take part in educational workshops, instead of paying a fine. It also states that there should be tighter control over premises selling alcohol, and even the closure of establishments, which are hotspots for under-age drinkers. Every year, around 6,000 teens in Spain go into a coma, through excessive alcohol consumption.

The road-rage cabbie

A TAXI driver, exhibiting road-rage, was arrested after running over a man with whom he was arguing. The 42-year-old, from Calvia, had been rowing with the driver of the car in front, according to witnesses. When the other driver started to approach him, he put his foot down and hit him, causing the victim to fall on top of the car. The cabbie then drove around, with the man on the bonnet, until he swerved hard enough to throw him off. Both men had behaved aggressively, according to witnesses, because the victim was trying to punch through the taxi’s windscreen.

BETWEEN El Medano and Abades, on Granadilla’s Poligono Industrial Estate, lies ITER, the Technological Institute of Renewable Energies. It is spotted easily from the

TF-1 motorway because of its gigantic wind turbines and solar panels, which contribute so much to Tenerife’s green future. That’s because they combine to create enough electricity to power an impressive 10% of the entire island’s needs.

ITER also houses research divisions for Environment, Technology and Renewable Energies, as well as a software advancement department. You can even book a four-day stay in some of ITER’s space-age “Bioclimatic Houses”, for around 350 euros at this time of the year.

Spanish-Irish ferry link launches at the weekend

THE Brittany Ferries company is launching the first direct ferry link between Spain and Ireland this Sunday (6th May).

It will offer two return sailings a week, from Cork to Santander, in northern Spain, and passengers can expect a comfortable, no-frills service. Although different from the cruise-ferry experience associated with Brittany Ferries in Ireland, the ship will offer comfortable, en-suite cabins, lounges, self-service dining, shopping and a café/bar. The MV Connemara ship, which has been chartered for the service, will follow the successful economy model Brittany Ferries has established, on services from the UK to France and Spain. A Brittany Ferries spokesperson said: “If you’re looking for value and a more simple service direct to Spain, the Connemara service could be just right for you.” Crossings will take approximately 26 hours, with departures from Cork on Wednesdays and Fridays. The ship’s 120 cabins feature beds for up to four passengers, and some will be pet-friendly. The Connemara will carry around 500 passengers, with space for 195 cars, and the company expects a 50/50 split between passengers and freight.

Couple left desolate by squatter thieves A DEVASTATED expat couple, whose Spanish home was taken over by squatters while they were on holiday, have been left “with nothing” after the occupiers fled with their belongings.

“We haven’t got a change of clothes… they even took our underwear,” said Anita Pillay, 69, who has lived in Torremolinos with husband Tony for 15 years. The couple flew to London for a three-week break to visit her elderly mother. But on their return, they found the locks on their front door had been changed, and a group of Romanians, “at least five”, had moved in. Anita, a South-Africanborn, former teacher, poured her heart out at her Avenida de los Manantiales apartment. “Last Friday the lawyer called, telling me that the judge had issued a court

order, which said the squatters would have to leave by Sunday. “But when we went there early that day, they were still inside, so I called the lawyer, who said we should take the documents to the police station. “The police said we had to return to court to get a letter, or get an official to call them, before they could do anything. “I eventually persuaded an officer to talk to the lawyers, who didn’t even read the resolution, but

they agreed to come with us at 11am on Monday.” A tearful Anita added: “When we got inside, we were horrified to see they had run off with literally everything they could lay their hands on. “What kind of person takes bars of soap and halfempty cleaning products? I’m now terrified that I’ll never be able to see my mum and dad again. “We’ve lost so much money, and the lawyer has already said we won’t get anything back.”

Notorious brothers running the cartel in ‘narco town’, and it’s hurting our police A DRUG cartel in southern Spain’s “narco town” is growing stronger by the day, thanks to the return of two ruthless brothers.

Six Cadiz gangs have joined forces to form the Castañitas Cartel, said to be headed by Antonio and Francisco Tejon. Police fear losing control, after realising the clans are now adopting identical structures to the Colombian drug cartels, which saw the South American country spiral into a virtual civil war in the 1980s. The AUGC police union has warned recent promises from the government, to increase funding and officer numbers, are little more than ‘band aids’, and will not be enough. A huge 80% of drug-related arrests in Spain happen in Cadiz, compared with 14% in Almeria and just 5% in Valencia. In the Campo de Gibraltar, at least 3,000 of its 63,000 population are working for drug-traffickers. And brothers Antonio and Francisco are believed to be running the show after grouping together six gangs to form a successful international smuggling operation. There are some 25 other gangs in the region, most of whom operate on their own, but authorities fear they could soon be enticed by the growing cartel. The Tejon brothers have, reportedly, returned to La Linea, after a brief exile in Morocco. Each gang, under their growing empire, is said to be responsible for different parts of the smuggling operation, including sea transportation, picking up cargo from the beaches and hiding the drugs in safe houses. The Tejon clan, including brothers, children, wives and more, are, allegedly, all

Danger signs: Drug gangs causing real panic by linking up

dedicated to the smuggling of drugs, mostly hashish. Police estimate Antonio and Francisco have around 20-30 million euros in cash, hidden around La Linea de la Concepcion. And apart from their 24-orso bank accounts, it is believed that they became known for throwing huge parties, complete with prostitutes and paid-off police officers. They lived in luxury mansions in La Linea, and

weren’t afraid to flaunt their cash on social media. The brothers fled to Morocco last year, after some 30 colleagues were arrested, but police intelligence says they are back… and this time they mean business! Concerned cops say they have brought with them a rise in violence, and brazen aggression against lawenforcers, especially when they have detected a stash. There have been at least

15 attacks against police vehicles in the last three years, and one recent ramming of a cop car went viral, after being compared with a scene from hit Netflix series Narcos. Meanwhile, gangs have begun hiring ruthless assassins to guard drug lords and precious cargo, while traffickers are dressing up as Guardia Civil officers to rob their rivals. And this means that Spain’s law-enforcers are ever more at risk. Two small gangs have been jailed this week after police seized a batch of uniforms, identical to the real deal. Juan Fernández, national spokesperson of the AUGC police union, said: “People do not know if the guards and the police are real. “We feel afraid, but we cannot allow these gangs to organise themselves.” Fernandez has called for an education or employment plan in the area, given

that 40% of the people are unemployed. Among the young, it is even more startling, with 80% unemployed. Worryingly, it means they are easy targets for traffickers looking for new recruits. Meanwhile, the Algeciras Guardia Civil, who cover the Campo de Gibraltar, have just 1,100 agents, which is about one-third the size of the drug-gangs’ 3,000-strong workforce. The situation is almost desperate. Traffickers have the latest technology to help avoid detection, while their huge profits may have already begun paying-off police. That is the fear of police chiefs, who suspect corruption could have begun creeping in. It is a tactic mastered by notorious kingpin Pablo Escobar. He believed everyone had a price, and he paid local police millions over the years to look the other way.

Loro Parque’s orca is given the legal seal of approval, eight times! THE Netherlands administrative and judicial authorities have again condemned complaints by activist organisation Free Morgan Foundation (FMF) against Loro Parque… no fewer than eight times!

The Ultrecht Court ruled that the CITES decision (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), granted to Morgan the orca by the Dutch authorities, was in accordance with the law. It was also granted in accordance with both European Community and CITES regulations. Likewise, these rulings have again highlighted that Loro Parque has the highestquality facilities, as all the judicial and administrative authorities have stated repeatedly. It offers the animals excellent welfare conditions, including the orca Morgan and the rest of the pod of orcas in the Parque. For the park, it is most important that both the judicial and administrative bodies, with competence in this area, recognise and highlight the excellent conditions of Loro Parque, because these affirmations come from bodies and authorities which are absolutely impartial and independent. These are made, despite the continuous and denigrating

Cops nab car-thief - spotted by owner THE man who stole a Citroën Berlingo, with a six-year-old son on board in Los Cristianos, has been arrested. The youngster’s mother, who left the engine running while attempting to complete an errand, spotted her car, and the thief, in Valle San Lorenzo last Thursday. Local and National Police collaborated to nab the 30-year-old, who was detained in the cells at the main Las Américas Police Station, awaiting the result of a police probe, and, almost certainly, a court appearance. The stolen vehicle was discovered with false licence plates, which were fixed after the theft.

Suspect shares online images of child-porn

campaigns of these radical groups, which strive, constantly, to defame and discredit Loro Parque with their lies and falsehoods. They distort the truth, and show clear contempt for the courts when they do not decide in their favour. During this process, Loro Parque has made itself available to the CITES authority to provide all the information necessary. Now, in addition to reaffirming the Parque’s position, the ruling acknowledges that Morgan’s CITES permit does not exclude breeding. It also recognises that scientific and conservation activities are carried out with the killer whales in Loro Parque. For the Free Morgan

Foundation to initiate a case in Spain, because it believes that Morgan is in poor form, its officials and members would have to provide evidence. However, as in all previous reports and campaigns, it has been demonstrated that the Loro Parque orcas are in good condition. They have one of the most modern facilities in the world, and are cared for by qualified and experienced staff. They also receive the most appropriate care for their species. Morgan has been in Loro Parque’s care since 2011. The decision to transfer her, to OrcaOcean’s spacious, fully-equipped facilities there, was taken to provide her with adequate living conditions and, in

particular, to meet her needs for social interaction. This decision was taken, then, by the Dutch authorities, based on the opinions of independent experts, because Morgan’s return to nature was an unviable option. The only other option for this animal was euthanasia! Loro Parque is supported by all the relevant administrative bodies (CITES in the Netherlands and Spain, the Spanish Zoos Inspectorate and the Spanish animal welfare authorities), which reject FMF’s demands and interpretations of the CITES permit. Therefore, FMF is the only entity which supports the release of Morgan the orca.

A BRITISH expat has been arrested on suspicion of sharing child pornography on the Costa del Sol. The 63-year-old, based in Mijas, was caught by National Police at Malaga airport, after returning from a trip to the Canary Islands. Police had been alerted to someone downloading and sharing child pornography online. Authorities, who traced the person’s computer IP address to Mijas, identified the expat. Following a court order, police searched the expat’s home and found a laptop and a storage device, which contained various files displaying “clear paedophilia content”. Officials also confirmed that the accused had shared numerous, explicit videos and pictures of children. But he had, reportedly, deleted the files before police searched the property.

Golf del Sur welcomes Vym Canarias WE all know that buying a house can be stressful, from finding the right property, to negotiating the sale price and obtaining financing. And this is as true of Tenerife as it is anywhere. Property searching, whether for a holiday home or a permanent move, can be a roller coaster of a ride. What area should you buy in? Should it be an independent property, or on a complex? How important is a pool - or a view? And that’s before you have even got into the offer process, and the final paperwork. Add into the mix the potential language problem, and the whole thing can be quite daunting. Luckily, our staff at Vym Canarias are experienced professionals, who will hold your hand throughout, and ensure that your property search, here in Tenerife, is an enjoyable one. Spring is proving to be an exceptionally-busy time for Vym Canarias. We are now sponsoring the lunchtime show on Oasis Fm, every weekday. Tune in from 12-3pm for the latest

offers and market information, together with interviews with key members of our team, all of which will give you the inside track on the local property scene. At the same time, we are delighted to announce the opening of our latest office! Our new site on the Golf del Sur brings our impressive tally to five, along the south coast of Tenerife, making us the island’s

leading estate agency. So, what is the secret of our success? Well, we have been in this business for a long time. Our team are multi-lingual, and we pride ourselves on our problemsolving skills. Vym Canarias may be a local estate agent, but that doesn’t stop us from thinking big, advertising and promoting on multiple websites, and through social-media channels.

However, what really sets us apart from the competition is that we always go the extra mile for our customers. And before you say every estate agent on the island claims the same thing, how many of them are by their clients’ side, every step of the way, from initial viewings, through to signing on the dotted line? We will also help with all those pesky little things

such as utilities. We’ve even been known to lend a hand on moving day! In our opinion, there has never been a better time to buy (or, indeed, sell) in Tenerife. We don’t need to tell you about the incredible climate (surely among the best in the world), the relatively-short flying time, and a commitment by the local government that has helped turn the island from an 18-30s haunt into a sophisticated destination, that can vie with some of the very finest. (That’s not to say the island has lost the unique charm that has seen visitors flock here in their millions, over the years.) Prices may be on the rise, but they are less than they were pre-recession, so it’s still possible to pick up a bargain! If you want to find out more, why not come along to our very own house warming at the new Golf del Sur office on 11th May. Join us from 5pm for drinks, nibbles and a chance to get to know our friendly and knowledgeable team, led by the lovely Apolina Fengier. You will find the office just behind the Hiperdino supermarket. Look forward to seeing you there!

Tenerife Loves Karaoke - heat 3 THE third heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, sponsored by Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, headed back to Los Cristianos this week. It gave two people the chance to progress into the semi-finals, with the chance to win 1,000 euros, and perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards. For the second week in a row, Tenerife Loves Karaoke was hosted in another new venue, Happy Days on the El Mirador strip, Los Cristianos. This part of the town is a favourite with karaoke singers, and the Tenerife Loves Karaoke competition. As with the previous heats, Happy Days was full, and there was not a seat to be had. With a slightly-delayed start, because of Champions’ League Football (well done Liverpool), host Gordon Slayney got proceedings underway with Steve singing I’ll Never Fall In Love Again, followed by Janet (a TLK favourite) performing Something Gotta Hold, and then John

with a great version of Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues. Next to take the stage was Muriel, who performed the beautiful Take That Look Off Your Face, a hit written by musical-theatre composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber. Dawn sang next, with what is a rarity this year with an Adele number, To Make You Feel My Love, which the crowd loved. Next was Mick with Quando Quando Quando, the Engelbert Humperdinck version, followed by Zoe, bringing the house down with Purple Rain. After Zoe we had Clive on stage, singing Little

White Bull. Then Angie sang Imagine, and last, but not least, Megan performed Jar of Hearts, receiving the biggest applause of the night. After a short break, the judges confirmed who would be going into the sing-off, and they were announced as being Mick, Zoe, Dawn and John. Gordon invited all four on stage, taking their second song choices. Proceedings got underway with Zoe singing rock classic, Sweet Child of Mine. Following Zoe was Mick with Can’t Take my Eyes off You, Dawn singing Ironic, and, finally, John with

Rocket Man. What a great sing-off, and what a great, fun night. The four judges had a hard job determining who would be going through to the semi-finals. All the singers performed brilliantly, and gave everyone at Happy Days a fun-filled night. However, two contestants needed to be put through to the semi-finals, and it was confirmed that the successful pair were Zoe and John. Each received their heat trophies, and meal vouchers from this year’s sponsors, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. We would like to thank

everyone who entered at Happy Days, as well as the owners and staff who made this another memorable heat. The next heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke is on Wednesday 9th May at The Theatre Bar, San Eugenio, Costa Adeje. If you would like to enter, to be in a chance of winning 1,000 euros, the chance to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, and meals from this year’s sponsor, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori, call 822 14 15 17, or you can register, directly, at the venue. Don’t forget; you have to be in it, to win it!

Ex-magnate Cursach set free, on bail of 1m-euros

DISGRACED former nightlife magnate Tolo Cursach has been released on bail for a mammoth one million euros, following the failure of his three previous attempts. The “King of the Night’s” lawyer convinced three judges he was no longer a flight risk, despite facing 80 years in prison. And he raised the money in just five hours, despite having his bank accounts frozen as part of the investigation. Cursach, who had been inside for 14 months, had been charged with homicide, drug-trafficking, bribery and corruption. In total, he faces 16 separate charges, including extortion, coercion, crimes against public finances, money-laundering and the illegal possession of weapons.

The Mallorca-born nightclub magnate was allowed to leave Palma jail via a side door, to avoid having to face the media. His release goes against concerns from former Judge Penalva that, once out of prison, he could intimidate key witnesses in the on-going case. But the new judge ruled that he is not a flight risk, given his “solid” family and business links on the island and his old age, along with a willingness for him to list his property as collateral. The judge also insisted that there had been no reports of a witness being intimidated in connection to the investigation, for over six months. Terms of Cursach’s bail include his appearance at court on the first Monday of every month.

Police were alerted after a customer complained about the quality of meat. And complaints about salmon and squid which had been purchased, were also lodged. In March, police discovered 30,000 kilos of expired,

Spain’s sunken-galleon battle with Columbia for its untold millions A SUNKEN galleon full of gold coins and precious stones, for which both Spain and Colombia claim ownership, would cost 57.2 million euros to bring to the surface, according to a recent estimate. The San José was, famously, shot down by British pirates on 8th June 1708, off the Cartagena de Indias coast, on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. From Spain, it was heading for Cartagena, now a popular tourism destination, having stopped at the Portobelo fair in Panamá to collect a consignment of 11 million gold and silver coins, worth an absolute fortune. Also on board are several million emeralds, pearls and other precious stones, according to historical

archives. Its exact location was not known until 4th December, 2015. The sunken San José. and its lucrative cargo, are a hugely-famous chapter in history throughout Spain and Colombia. In fact, Gabriel García Márquez, the late Colombian Nobel Literature Prize winner, dedicates several pages of his iconic novel, Love in the Time of Cholera,

to the hero, who attempted to locate the ship and its treasures, to win the heroine’s heart. Spain claims UNESCO is supporting its claim of ownership for the San José, since it was originally a “State-owned” vessel. But Colombia officials insist their country is the rightful proprietor, because the treasures were being taken there when

the British shot it down. However, both countries have expressed their willingness to reach “an amicable agreement”. Meanwhile, Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos says public and private associations will be engaged if the San José is brought to the surface; thus saving taxpayers’ funds. He pledges that the government will “evaluate the proposals”, along with its technical teams, and “approve the most convenient”. Columbia’s intention right now is to award the contract for refloating the boat to Maritime Archaeology Consultants Switzerland AG, “unless anyone else is interested”. The Heritage Ministry of President Santos believes that the “historical, scientific and cultural significance of the ship” would attract a high number of foreign visitors, both the general public and specialists.

Sexy films will shock island’s clean-up bid ADULT film-makers are advertising across UK internet websites, offering free holidays to Mallorca, and cash for “ladies, aged 18-40”. It is a real blow for island officials, who are trying to clean up the holiday island’s image. They have already banned cheap

alcohol promotions, and limited the number of revellers on club crawls. There are also proposals to make boozecruises illegal.

The adverts, posted on internet portals, say the film-makers are “looking for amateur first-timers for an adult ‘girl-next-door’ shoot this summer”.

They add: “If you’ve ever fancied, or considered, adult work, and a few days in the sun in July or August, get in touch, stating your age and location, and any July dates you’re not free. Send at least two photographs.” The organisers, who say interviews and castings will take place from mid-May, describe the employment as “full time”.

EasyJet win crown, with flying colours LOOKING for cheap flights? Check out easyJet’s 2018 offering because the company has been named “best value airline for shorthaul”.

The budget company, based at Luton, topped the list by Skyscanner researchers, who studied popular airlines to determine which one offered passengers the best deal, cash-wise. But though the ticket is cheap, it doesn’t mean the extras will be, so Skyscanner considered a host of features, as well as average flight prices, including baggage costs, seat reservations and onboard catering. EasyJet proved to offer the best value overall, closely followed by Eurowings. Third place was shared by KLM and Swiss airlines, followed by Vueling Airlines, fourth, and Lufthansa, fifth. Despite being named Europe’s best low-cost airline, Jet2 was sixth, with British Airways, FlyBe and Air France jointseventh. But despite offering the lowest flight prices, Ryanair didn’t feature on the list, because of all the weirdand-wonderful extras the airline charges. John Ritchie, Skyscanner’s Senior Growth Manager, said: “When booking flights, travellers can often be confused by what is deemed to be a bargain, and what isn’t. “It’s very easy for travellers to book a great flight deal, only to realise that the extra costs for baggage and seat reservations have taken them over budget. “Whether a flight deal is of value to a traveller is determined by the needs of that traveller, and what he or she deems to be important.”

No laughing matter as Benidorm’s blown out

BENIDORM, the long-running, awardwinning ITV sitcom said farewell on Wednesday after its final episode, following a fantastic 10series run, which kept viewers in stitches.

Television chiefs decided to call it a day because ratings were falling, and days before the final show, creator Derren Litten told his Twitter followers: “Crazy to think Wednesday will be the last episode of Benidorm! “I created the series over 11 years ago, wrote it, gueststarred in it and ended up directing it. It’s difficult

to think what else there is to do! Thank you for watching!” The series features an cast of holiday-makers and staff at Benidorm’s all-inclusive Solana Hotel, on Spain’s Costa Blanca. The axe dropped, only weeks after Litten tweeted: “Apparently The Sun are running a story tomorrow on how Benidorm has been cancelled. Don’t make me f****** laugh! (I enjoyed that story after series 6. And 7 and 8 and 9).” The newspaper actually claimed that Benidorm’s run was nearing its end, and would be axed by ITV because of dwindling audience numbers. The same newspaper also

claimed that Litten had already left the show, and had signed a contract with the BBC to write a new sitcom, supposedly set in Scarborough, for them. They suggested the new series would focus on a similar group of characters to those in Benidorm, and be set in a karaoke bar in the seaside town. A TV source, quoted by the newspaper, said: “The ratings have started to drop off, and a number of the fans’ favourites have left, so it feels as though the time is right to let it go out while it’s still on a high.” Just over 4.3 million fans tuned in for the first show of Series 10, which was a 400,000 drop on the previous year.

Healthy non-drinkers outlive booze brigade PEOPLE who enjoy one or more alcoholic drinks daily find it more difficult to fight off harmful complaints, suggests a new study. The booze is said to have an excess of harmful, oral bacteria and a drought of healthy bacteria. Some 10% of American adults are estimated to be heavy drinkers, which, experts define as consuming one or more drinks per day for women, and two or more drinks daily for men. There is a variety of research into the positives and negatives of alcohol consumption, with evidence that moderate drinkers live longer than non-drinkers. And having more than five drinks weekly increases the likelihood of lifethreatening cancers. Previous studies, examining the link between alcohol consumption and disease, have identified an increased risk of developing head and neck cancers, as well as gastro-intestinal cancers. However, this new study is the first of its kind to compare, directly, drinking levels, and their effect on oral bacteria. The researchers examined more than 1,000 people,

aged between 55-87, who enrolled in national cancer trials. Each person provided a mouthwash sample, along with information about his or her alcohol consumption. The participants were sorted into three groups: 70 non-drinkers, 614 moderate drinkers and 160 heavy drinkers. The results were plotted on graphs to determine how bacteria differed in drinkers and teetotallers. The drinkers were found to have higher levels of potentially-harmful bacteria, used commonly in food supplements meant to prevent sickness. “Our study offers clear evidence that drinking is bad for maintaining a healthy balance of microbes in the mouth,” said study author Jiyoung Ahn, an epidemiologist at the NYU School of Medicine. That could help explain why drinking, like smoking, leads to bacterial changes, already tied to cancer and chronic disease. But she stressed that the research was far from determining if there could be a way to regulate levels, to be more similar to those found in non-drinkers.

Pension advice in Spain By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

WITH Brexit approaching, and more options than ever for UK pensions, quality advice for expatriates is crucial.

While any financial transaction brings a degree of risk, pensions are often the cornerstone of a comfortable retirement, so getting it wrong can be disastrous. Indeed, we are sometimes approached by people who have made the wrong pension choice with another firm, and found it very costly to rectify. These six tips can help you get it right first time: 1. Check your pension adviser is regulated by the UK Financial Conduct

Authority (FCA) Regulated companies must meet certain standards and act in the best interests of their clients. While taking regulated advice is compulsory for people looking to transfer “finalsalary” pension benefits worth £30,000+, it is strongly recommended for anyone considering their pension options. An online search of a provider’s full name plus “FCA” should reveal more about their relationship with the

UK drug smuggler is facing 18-year stretch

BRIAN Charrington, a British drugs baron, is standing trial this week in Alicante’s provincial High Court, accused of drugs offences. He and eight henchmen face 18-year prison terms for bringing cocaine into Spain aboard a leisure craft, via Altea, in Alicante Blanca. The drugs, ready for distribution, were found in a villa, one of Charrington’s 10 Costa Blanca properties, which, police believe, provided bolt-holes for fugitives from British and international justice.

National Police raided his Calpe home in July 2013, and he was one of the UK’s 10 most-wanted criminals. They impounded assets worth five million euros, which included 200kg of cocaine and 500,000 euros in cash, in addition to several top-of-the-range vehicles and six boats. Seven people were arrested in Spain and six in Venezuela, during a joint investigation involving police in Spain, the UK, Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil and Colombia. Charrington was notorious for maintaining his own Wikipedia entry, which he updated, meticulously,

with details of his exploits as the head of an international drugs network. The narco-trafficker had been imprisoned previously in the UK, France and Germany, as well as Spain, where he was arrested in Calpe, Valencia, in 1997, with four tons of hashish. The operation leading to Charrington’s arrest, which began in 2010, was based on his girlfriend, who’d had a previous relationship with Alain Coelier, a French drugtrafficker and career criminal. He was shot that year in La Nucia, together with a bodyguard.

regulator, and link to their record in the Financial Services Register. 2. Consider all your options Many expatriates benefit from transferring UK pension funds to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). Advantages include more flexibility with withdrawals, such as the option to take Euros or Pounds, and freedom to pass benefits to heirs, other than your spouse. However, a QROPS will not suit everyone, and is not always the most taxefficient solution. With expert planning, pension funds can, potentially, be restructured in arrangements that provide additional tax benefits for Spanish residents, so take time to explore alternative options. 3. Get personalised, crossborder tax advice The Spanish tax treatment of pensions differs from the UK, and is highly complex. Under certain circumstances, for example, it may be possible to receive 92% of an annuity taxfree in Spain, but the rules are far from straightforward. Many pension advisers claim understanding of Spanish taxation, but may not have the full expertise to navigate issues such as Spanish succession, wealth and income tax mitigation, in the context of your overall situation. This can lead to a muchhigher tax bill than necessary, for you and your heirs. 4. Beware of pension scams and offers that are “too good to be true”. Be extremely cautious of “advice” from a company that has cold-called you, and never sign anything under pressure. Check the provider’s credentials, including their crossborder experience and

understanding of Spanish taxation, to avoid the risk of tax penalties, or even losing everything to fraud. Remember: with unregulated companies, there is no recourse if things go wrong. 5. Research other peoples’ experience Testimonials, particularly word-of-mouth recommendations from people you trust, can provide reassurance, and indicate a business is doing things the right way. Look for consumer reviews, ask around your local community and follow up any references. Be mindful, however, that other peoples’ situations might be quite different from yours. What works for them may not necessarily work for you. 6. Look at the whole picture Pensions should form just part of your overall, financial plan. Your adviser should look at your pensions in the context of your unique circumstances and wider situation, including residency, your other assets, tax and estate planning, to establish the most suitable strategy for you and your family. With some current opportunities not expected to survive post-Brexit, there may be limited time to take advantage of today’s freedoms. While you should not rush into any decisions, review your pension options, without delay, to make sure you are in the best position to enjoy your retirement in Spain. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices which may change. Individuals should seek personalised advice. For the last decade, a team of frontline medics has been fighting to save Borneo’s critically endangered orangutans. Armed with cameras, International Animal Rescue has documented their struggle: pulling apes from devastated jungle, giving emergency medical care, rehabilitating, and releasing the healthiest orangutans back into the wild. This is both the story of their life-saving work and of how one of our closest wild relatives has been pushed to the brink of extinction. Combining genuine rescue footage with contributions from experts throughout, this Natural World documentary looks toward the future and asks what hope remains to save the orangutan.

Monday 7th May, BBC1, 22.00 The BAFTA award winning Car Share returns to BBC One with a special improvised episode. Car Share Unscripted will feature Peter Kay and Sian Gibson ad-libbing as John and Kayleigh. The entire show follows them home on their daily commute and features what was filmed whilst driving around with no script. When the show was announced late last year Peter said: “We were always very fond of ad libbing around the script when we were filming the series so we decided to see what would happen if we took the script away and just relied on just our chemistry alone, reacting to whatever came on the radio.”

It is revealed that Fosco’s wife Madam Fosco (Sonya Cassidy) would also inherit money if Laura were to die. Marian falls gravely ill and Sir Percival conceals her in the servants’ wing of the house. He tells Laura that Marian has gone to London with Count Fosco and Laura follows. Meanwhile, Walter (Ben Hardy) returns from Honduras, where he’s been working as an artist, to learn of Laura’s death. Essential watering guidance By Francine

from garden tenerife

THIS week, as Summer approaches, we have put together a guide to watering your plants, ensuring your garden remains full of vibrant colours and smells!

As we all know, during the Summer, our plants can quickly dry out, whimper and look a bit worse for wear! It’s vital they are watered, regularly, with a steady supply, ensuring the water travels down past the top layer of dry soil, to feed the deeper roots. Any plants growing in

pots, such as flowers, herbs etc., will become drier, more quickly, than if they were in the ground. Repeated wilting and rehydrating, irregularly, can be detrimental to the survival of plants, flowers, vegetables, hedges, trees and shrubs. Our advice - it is best to water all plants early in the morning before sunrise, and in the evening when the heat of the sun has cooled down. If the plants are watered late, after the sun has gone down, they will stay wet all night, and this can cause bacterial and fungal diseases. This can be difficult to manage in between life commitments, so the best way to ensure consistency would be to install an irrigation, timed, watering system. There are countless benefits for both the plants, and you! A timed watering system

will allow the plants to receive sufficient levels of water at regular times, avoiding the hot parts of the day. It will also reduce excessive watering, to make up for times when we have all been unable to water our plants when we should have done! The best thing of all is that a watering system is great value for money; they

are not as much as you may think! Lawns will need watering once or twice a week during the Summer. Light watering will encourage shallow root growth, but can leave the grass more vulnerable to heat and drought damage, especially if you are unable to supply frequent watering.

All the flies and bugs are out and about during the Summer, and they tend to hide amongst the plants, getting shelter from the sun, in between the leaves. A quick blast of the leaves can help get rid of any unwanted flies, and prevent them passing diseases onto your plants. Our final tip on essential watering during the Summer is to feed all the plants with fertiliser, on a weekly basis. This can be reduced to every 3-4 weeks, during the Winter. Never put fertiliser onto dry soil, because, when the plants receive it, it will burn the roots. Fertiliser granules or pellets are a great way to supply the plants each time they are watered, otherwise a capful of fertiliser dissolved in a watering can will be sufficient, on a weekly basis. And your plants will be sure to survive and thrive!

Car warning lights By Emma

from Motorworld

WE have covered this subject before, but, because of the current, financial crisis that many find themselves in, people are looking to save money, wherever possible. It seems prudent to reiterate how important the warning lights are on your car. From time to time, we all see these lights, but it is amazing how many people ignore them, only to find that, shortly after, their car stops, won't start or loses all power. This is often because of the lack of maintenance, or, in some cases, ignoring the warning lights. As cars have become more and more sophisticated, the number of possible faults that can arise has grown significantly, along with the number of different warning lights that might flash up on the dashboard. But they needn't be alarming. With a little help and

understanding, you may be able to save yourself money, and avoid potential, severe damage to your car, if you take notice of its warnings. If a warning light appears (or fails to extinguish after you've started the engine), depending on the light you should either stop, or get the error fixed, as soon as possible. If you know what the light means, and act quickly, you could save time and money. Oil pressure warning light This light, perhaps the most common and well known, should illuminate when the ignition is switched on, and go out once the engine starts. If the light stays on after starting, or illuminates during a journey, stop immediately, switch off the engine, and check the engine-oil level. Top up straight away if the level is low. If the warning lamp illuminates, even though the oil level is correct, do not start the engine, and contact your mechanic or garage, immediately. An easy way to do this is to take a photo of your dashboard with the light clearly showing, and send it to your mechanic or

garage. Ask for advice as to whether it is safe to continue your journey with caution, or whether the car should be sent to the garage on a grúa. Battery charge warning light This light should illuminate when the ignition is switched on, and should go out as soon as the engine starts. If it does not illuminate at all, or if it illuminates while driving, your battery is not being charged, so the most likely problem is that there is a fault with your charging system. This may be due to one of the following: ·a loose battery or starter terminals ·a broken or loose alternator drive belt ·an alternator failure If the alternator belt is broken, it must be replaced before you restart the engine. The coolant system may rely on this belt, and its failure could cause the engine to overheat and be damaged. Move the car, immediately, to a safe location, and turn off the engine. Do not restart the engine until you have sought professional assistance.

Brake system warning light This light will remain illuminated when the handbrake is in use. Illumination after releasing the handbrake may indicate a low brake-fluid level. You may need to top up the fluid. As brakes wear, the fluid level will slowly drop, so regular checks are important. If you are not able to check this yourself, go to your garage and ask them to do it for you. This may be free of charge, but it would routinely be done at a service, which is something to bear in mind. If the brake fluid is too low, and stopping distance is distinctly longer than usual, one of the two, hydraulic, brake circuits may have failed. If the light remains illuminated, even though the brake fluid level is correct, this may indicate a sensor fault. Take your car to a dealer or garage that has fault-finding equipment. Engine warning light This light illuminates when the ignition is switched on. It should go out as soon as the engine starts. If it illuminates with the

engine running, it indicates a malfunction with the engine management system. Have this checked as soon as possible. If the light turns to red, or illuminates in conjunction with the STOP light, stop the vehicle and seek assistance. ABS warning light When the ignition is switched on, the light illuminates briefly to confirm that the system is operational. If it illuminates when driving, it indicates a fault. Have this checked. Normal braking (without ABS) will generally be maintained, and many cars will be safe to drive on, but some will not. If in doubt, check with your mechanic, or stop driving the car and have it checked. Brake system and ABS warning lights If both warning lights illuminate at the same time when driving, stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so. Reduce vehicle speed gradually, and immediately move the vehicle to a safe position. Use the brakes with great care, and don't step on the brake pedal, abruptly.

Heartworm fundraising event A FEW of our lovely dogs at K9 are currently suffering with heartworm, and they desperately need treatment. Heartworm is a roundworm which infects the heart. The severity of the disease depends on the amount of worms present, and how long the dog has suffered with the condition. Most dogs make a full recovery, when treated, but medical care is expensive, costing around 50 euros per 10kg of dog. For this reason, we are hosting a fundraising event at Clouseau's Bar in Palm Mar, on Sunday, 13th May. We will be there from 2-6pm, offering a wide range of entertainment, from live

performers, to a raffle and tombola. For a full list of entertainers, please refer to

our Facebook page. Food will be available, including a vegetarian option. All proceeds from the event will go towards the heartworm treatments for our dogs. Also, dogs recovering from heartworm require a quiet and warm place to stay, so we are looking for foster homes, for a period of three weeks after their treatments. Anniversary events! Because it's our 25th anniversary, we also have several fundraisers lined up, which are sure to make it a great year: The Polygon Bar, Los Cristianos, on 9th June; Howlin' at the Moon, San Eugenio, on 21st July, and our 25th anniversary summer dance/dinner in September/ October. Date and location to be announced. Do come and join us!

Good news indeed! Two of our beautiful dogs, Zafira and Sam, have recently found new, forever homes. It's always good to see happy endings! Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife. com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@ k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of

our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker, K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats. The shop is open from 10am2pm, Monday to Saturday. Pop in, or call them on 6465 61035. Collections can also be arranged, using this number.

My big tick, off the bucket list!

By Joe Price I CANNOT believe it was nearly two weeks ago that I completed the hottest London Marathon ever! All the preparation and training was coming to a head, and the realisation of “this thing I’d decided to do” was actually going to happen. For the past few months, the training plan had been going well, and, much to my amazement, I was able to fit everything in, between working and looking after the children. The early mornings weren’t as hard as I thought, and I actually enjoyed the experience of running longer distances. Now, the day had arrived, and I was ready… well as ready as I’d ever be. The knee injury I’d picked up was okay and, I was aware that I would never be fast. But I also knew that, in the words of the Shakira song from Zootopia, which my son had been singing for me all week: “I won’t give up, I won’t give in, until I reach the end”. The fact that my family were travelling from all over the country to watch me run, and that I’d had so much support from all my friends, as well as the money I had raised for Leukaemia Care UK, also made me more determined. The atmosphere was amazing, immediately. On the coach journey to the start, I chatted with a lady who had run a few marathons, and had received a “good for age”

place for London. I walked up to the start area with a teacher, also running his first marathon, but he had obviously been running for a long time. Then, after a few toilet stops and bag drop, we were waiting in the pens to start, and I met a few people in the same boat as me. I still can’t believe how calm I was at the start. Perhaps the meltdown I’d had over my knee a few weeks before had removed my nerves. The start line seemed to take forever to reach, but at no point did I ever think: “What am I doing?” We chatted together whilst we waited, and, once over the line, we all wished each other good luck. We were off! The weather was unbelievable, I had been worrying for ages that I would be too cold, but I needn’t have worried. We all thought, at some point, that the sun would be covered by clouds. But no, it was beating down,

and, straight away, I had to think about changing my fuelling and adding extra water when I could. The crowd were amazing from the start, offering jelly babies and shouting each name as we passed, which made it such an experience for me. My marathon was split into places where I would be seeing family along the way. And, before I knew it, I was coming up to Mile 9, which was our first contact. I wondered whether they would see me through the crowds and not just run past them, but there they were, all cheering me on. A quick cuddle from the kids and I was off again! Mile 11 was the Leukaemia Care cheer crowd… more high-fives and cheering, and, before I knew it, I’d reached halfway. This was the hardest bit for me. The heat was getting to me (still no cloud), my knee was starting to niggle a bit, and, on the other side of the road, people at Mile 22 were running in the opposite direction. It made you realise just how much further you had to run. I turned my phone on and received all the incredible messages from my friends and family, which hadn’t come through in the morning, and this gave me a big smile. I met a lot of people on the way round, chatting away and enjoying the day. The lady who gave me the piece of ice was a godsend, as was the person in the crowd, handing out what

I believed to be the best mini-cheddars I had ever tasted. Tower Bridge was, without a doubt, the best place for crowds until that point. The noise was unbelievable, as was the spectacular view! I reached the Mile 15 marker, realising that this was the most training I had done, because of the knee injury, so from now on, it was into the unknown. By Mile 20, my knee was really starting to hurt, but I knew that Mile 22/23 was the next meet-up with my family, so I pushed on to get some support from them. This was when I realised I had reached the other side of the road - yay! I was nearly at the end, with just 10k to go. Seeing my family again was amazing, and, from then on until the end, the crowds were packed along the streets. Finally, we had some cloud, and, apart from the knee, I was feeling pretty good. Not long to go. But by Mile 24, my knee had gone. The support was no longer helping, and it was hurting to run or walk. I got to the time marker and realised I was going finish in around six hours, and I have to admit, I was a bit gutted. But I managed it, limping to the end, and, finally, there was Buckingham Palace. The the end was in sight, and so was the medal! The meet-up my family at the end was great, and I finally got to have a

conversation with them all, as well as the people from Leukaemia Care UK. And off we went to Pizza Hut for a well-deserved treat. I couldn’t fault any of the Marathon staff. The marshals were brilliant, always asking if you were okay. The water people were excellent, and always on hand, although I know people after me had issues with water running out. The firemen with their water hoses, and the showers put on to cool us down, worked a treat. The St John Ambulance did an amazing job. They had their work cut out because a lot of people struggled with the heat, and there were other wounded warriors along the way. I’d also like to mention Matt Campbell, the chef who, tragically, collapsed at 22.5 miles and passed away the next day. It just shows what sort of stress you put on your body to run a marathon, and my thoughts go out to his family. RIP Matt. Thank you to everyone who has supported me, and donated to this brilliant cause. You really have been amazing. The entire day seemed like an out-of-body experience, and it wasn’t until I returned to Tenerife and back to work, that I realised what I’d done. In fact, it took me a few days, and a physio session, to feel proud of myself. Would I do it again? Absolutely!

Unlucky black cats IT'S a problem shared everywhere, and certainly here in Tenerife; black cats are hard to rehome! Through no fault of their own, sometimes it's down to age-old superstition, but also people tend to choose “prettier”, coloured cats. Here are a few reasons why you should own a black cat. Black cats were worshipped in ancient Egypt, and owning one was thought to bring good luck. Black goes with everything. Black cats won't clash with your decor, or what you're wearing. Most black cats are not actually black at all, but a mix of all sorts of dark colours. Look at a black cat in the sun, and you'll see all sorts of shades. There are many famous black cats such as Salem, from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Binx from Hocus Pocus, and Isis from Star Trek. Because they're so beautiful, they photograph amazingly. All you have to do is

put them in a good light, and watch their features really show. They're exotic. Black cats are described as “sleek”, and look like miniature panthers. They're healthy Re-search has shown that black coats have evolved separately many times in different species, indicating dark fur as a survival benefit, meaning black cats are more resistant to diseases. But, simply, the best reason to adopt a black cat is because black cats are the least likely to be adopted! Still missing Angelo still hasn't been

found. He was born deaf, so is unlikely to respond to being called. He went missing in the Ten Bel area, Las Galletas, nearly two weeks ago. He has a microchip fitted, so can be identified. PLEASE, if you see him around, contact Annette on 6428 77706, or contact Cats Welfare. Fostering We are in urgent need of people, in their own homes, to bottle-feed kittens. No experience is needed, and we will supply all the milk - and support! Spruce it up with ozone! NOWADAYS, we read more and more about the effect of ozone. During the cleaning process, almost all aircleaning equipment appears to use ozone, in one way or another. But what is it? What does it look like ? What can we use it for? Where is it? Basically, ozone is nature’s sword against bacteria, viruses and fungi. It forms as a result of UV radiation, and becomes part of the atmosphere. Consequently, it can be produced with UV radiation, but nature also creates ozone in other ways, for example as the byproduct of lightning. It is possible to reproduce it artifically, and Ozone White Technology copies this phenomenon, by using a so-called corona ( electric discharge) generator. Under normal circumstances, ozone is an invisible gas. For a more-scientific explanation, please visit www.ozonewhite.com By nature, ozone is a very strong oxidant. If the concentration is sufficient, it kills bacteria and viruses, as well as fungi and its spores. It also destroys creatures smaller than 1-2 mm (insects and their eggs, bedbugs and dust-mites).

Ozone is a dangerous gas when present in a certain concentration, for a certain time. However, it’s a very unstable molecule, so it breaks down quickly. Our technology’s success lies in these two characteristics. Ozone White equipment produces a very high concentration of ozone in a very short time, and our technology is used only by trained personnel, following all safety regulations. According to the technological guidelines, Ozone White equipment will maintain the necessary level of ozone concentration during the treatment, in order to ensure optimal effect. Depending on

the type of the treatment, this can take from 5 to 120 minutes. Our machines are online, connected to our server, so every active or inactive period can be easily monitored. One of the big advantages of the online system is that our services always strictly follow the technological guidelines. More then 10 million tourists come to the Canary Islands every year, and many vehicles, apartments etc. are air conditioned. All year around, the average temperature is above 20 degrees, providing a natural incubator for bacteria. Let’s suppose we are plan-

ning our next holiday, and looking for the most-appropriate accommodation. How can we obtain information as to how clean the rooms or apartments are? By request, we can be in contact with the provider, to see if we can carry out treatment before arrival. Please contact us at helpdesk@ozonewhite.com Our goal is to operate in three, main divisions over the next five years. Accommodation and restaurants, public-transport systems, including taxis, and a special division for public-waiting areas in banks, medical waiting rooms, hospitals and ambulance services. We are proud to have Salvaser Ambulance as a satisfied partner. In these places, we not only disinfect the surfac-

es, but we play a huge role in disinfecting the AC systems, which are used, daily. We hope to achieve nicesmelling, public transport in a few years’ time. Apart from the anti-odour effect, it’s important to mention that we would also be travelling in a much-healthier environment. At the moment, our services are available in Budapest, Tenerife and Zermatt (Switzerland). It is important that these non-provider treatments will be registered on ODRL as well! It would definitely be advantageous to be able to show that a car or house has been treated with Ozone White Techology. We have to make it clear that Ozone White does not sell any equipment, only the technology, and this guarantees a genuine and high-level of service. The price will be influenced by many factors. In general, we can say that active treatment costs four euros per minute. On that basis, a full car treatment would cost 45 euros every three months. The full treatment of a space would be 40-100 euros. Every task must be assessed prior to the treatment being carried out, and the exact price will be quoted, individually.

Say cheese, and tas IF you happen to be a judge at the annual World Cheese awards, you will be familiar with the Montesdeoca label.

These Tenerife cheese-makers win awards in so many classes, year after year, always bringing something new to the table. Recently, they also entered a competition in the US, in Wisconsin, and, to nobody’s surprise, Alberto Montesdeoca had to find extra room in his luggage for yet another trophy. Good news for people in Adeje: these

incredible, hand-crafted cheeses, made from the milk of 1,000 goats, are produced in the borough. The Montesdeoca dairy is based in Adeje, where it produces and sells its award-winning products, in the farmers’ market every weekend, and Wednesday afternoons. Alternatively, you can actually visit the dairy and see the cheesemaking operation as it happens. And there’s more than cheese on offer, because the group is now making yoghurt and butter, with some delicious combinations, using other fresh, natural ingredients,

ste it as well! and producing an increasing range of tasty products. On Wednesday, Adeje Focus, the support group representing international residents in the borough, has organised a guided tour in English of the fantastic cheese-making installation. The tour will take about an hour, and visitors will be able to see the herd of goats, and watch the various

stages of cheese-making. The visit will end with a tasting, and, of course, those visiting can also buy some of the cheeses. The tour costs just five euros, and your guide will be one of the Montesdeoca family, who run the farm. They love to meet their clients and visitors first-hand when they can, and this is an ideal opportunity for them,

and for people on the tour. For more information, or to book your place (places are limited) email focusadeje@ gmail.com, and please include a contact number. The organisers will confirm your place on the list and let you know how to get there (it’s in Tijoco, one of Adeje’s outerlying villages) and parking is available.

Harsh reality for Tenerife Rayo Vallecano 3 CD Tenerife 1 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife review

THREE straight defeats, and 10 goals conceded, have left Tenerife’s dream of reaching the promotion play-offs in the rear-view mirror.

There was no disgrace in this defeat, at table-toppers Rayo; just a realisation that there are serious holes to be plugged in the squad, once the season ends, after five more games. Officially, the club and coach pledge to fight until it’s impossible to make up the current, seven-point gap. But despite a spirited chase, after a poor start, the focus should now shift to rebuilding, and learning valuable lessons. Casadesus, who has shown the right spirit in recent matches, enjoyed another outstanding performance, including a well-taken header for Tenerife’s goal. They could not be faulted for effort, but Rayo had a bit of a swagger, and tunnel vision for promotion. Suso, Tenerife’s veteran skipper, earned his starting place on merit, and his firstminute header was denied its reward by a one-handed parry from the keeper. The

gutsy right-winger followed that with a cross, put wide by Casadesus. Rayo, caught cold by CDT’s defiant spirit, gradually stamped their class on the game. Defensive uncertainty and lack of tactical awareness have been creeping into Tenerife’s game, and Inaki, at leftback, just invites trouble. He was slow and unsure, but, thankfully, keeper Dani Hernandez made a couple of firm saves to steady the ship. Bryan Acosta had a strong penalty claim rejected when held back by a Rayo arm in the box, which led to the booking of Tenerife coach Joseba Etxeberria, who chewed the referee’s ear. Meanwhile, Rayo’s forwards were getting bolder, and, after 38 minutes, Embarba launched the ball into the Tenerife goalmouth. Carlos Ruiz slipped and missed an intercepting header, allowing the ball to land on the outstretched toe of Raul de Tomas, who opened the Rayo scoring. Five minutes later, Inaki put in a long, airbound cross, and Casadesus rose with power and purpose to head home an equaliser. The second half opened with De Tomas hitting the post, and Suso, at the other end, setting up Acosta, who flicked the ball wide. Luis Milla saved his absent defence with a decisive, tidying header, back to Dani. But Tenerife were still creating chances.

Casadesus cringed as the home keeper kept his shot out, off the post, and Milla wasted a neat pass, while Alex Mula could find no takers to help his speedy break. Rayo started to apply more

pressure, and a free-kick found Moreno, who headed Rayo back in front. The quality of the Tenerife subs showed why they have fallen by the wayside. Juan Villar returned from injury

again, in place of Suso, but he looked nowhere near fit. Malbasic took over from Acosta, but, apart from one weak shot, he might just as well have been playing in slippers. Rayo, who needed to finish off the game, had the tools to do so. Embarba hit a fierce shot into the top corner of the net, on Dani’s weaker side, and the game was over as a contest. The final Tenerife sub was Paco Montañes, for Mula, but his five minutes were uneventful. There is some genuine quality in the Tenerife squad, but not enough. Short-term coach Etxeberria, expected to re-sign soon for next season, has already shown that some players, like Jorge and Vitolo, don’t impress him. A ruthless cull is necessary this summer. But, for now, a win tomorrow (Saturday) at home against Almeria at 7pm is needed. It would underline the good work carried out by coach Etxeberria since taking on a relegation-threatened side, riddled with injuries.

Rommel’s legend lives on YOU can tell a lot about the soul of a football club by how they honour their most treasured players. And a perfect example will be seen on Sunday, at CD Tenerife’s home game in Santa Cruz. Rommel Fernandez, The Panama Panzer, died 25 years ago, and players and fans alike will salute the striker’s memory, as they do annually. Fate brought Rommel to Tenerife in 1986 to play in a tournament with his national team. But Tenerife appreciated the 21-yearold’s talent, and invited him to become the second Panamanian ever to play in a European league. An 18-goal haul in the 198889 season helped Tenerife into the Primera Division. He followed up with regular double-figure seasons, and was voted best South American in the Spanish league. Valencia snapped him up in 1991, but he was a fringe player and was loaned out to Albacete. There, he regained his form and scored his 50th league goal, while playing against Tenerife! Sadly, a car crash claimed his life on 6th May 1993, at the age of 27. but CD Tenerife, and their fans, have never forgotten him.

Each year, flowers are placed at pitch-side before the nearest home game to his death. This year, the Almeria game falls tomorrow (Saturday) on 5th May, and a tiled shrine, built into the outside wall of the Heliodoro stadium, will be adorned with flowers and candles. Rommel scored 56 goals in

162 games in Spain. He also played for his country, most notably, in their unsuccessful qualifying campaign for the 1994 USA World Cup. The Panama City national stadium is now named after Rommel and, fittingly, Panama has qualified for its first World Cup finals, in Russia next month, in the same group as England.

Triathlete Sharon dies in Spain after Ironman test SHARON Long, a British female triathlete, died last Sunday after competing in the first stage of a gruelling, Ironman event on the Costa del Sol.

She was one of 2,500 international athletes, taking part in the Ironman 70.3 Marbella event, which comprised a 1,900-metre swim in the sea, followed by a 90km bike ride and a 21km run, finishing on the Puerto Banus sands. Sharon, from Plymouth, who was rushed to Costa del Sol Hospital after going into cardiac arrest during the swim, passed away there on Monday after remaining in a “brain-dead” condition. She had been competing in the female 40-44 age-group, along with a friend, Kirsty, who also took part in the event. She was found floating, face-down in the water, and was pulled into a dinghy

Victory was down to solid performances from every player, which was enough to raise a thumbs-up from injured American Davin White, who had just had an operation on two fingers of his left hand. An aggressive approach saw Tenerife lead by 10 points at the halfway stage, with quarter wins of 16-131 23-16. Gran Canaria chipped away

Adeje back in top gear

before being brought ashore, following desperate attempts to revive her. Local reports said she remained “brain dead” until, eventually, passing away at the Costa del Sol Hospital, near Marbella town centre, on Monday. Team H Running Plymouth, a group of runners from her home city, posted a message on Facebook, alongside her picture, saying: “It was so sad to learn that our great friend Sharon Lang passed away, tragically, doing something she loved. “All of our love and thoughts are with Sharon’s family and her friend, Kirsty, who was with her in Spain.”

at the deficit, but their 1716 and 22-21 advantages were never going to be enough. In front of a 6,000 plus crowd, Tenerife milked the applause from their hundreds of travelling fans. The teams are on course to meet again in the playoff series, Gran Canaria are now 6th, and Tenerife occupy the 8th and final qualification spot. Tim Abromaitis took top honours on the day with 18 points, special praise was reserved for Fran Vazquez with another ninepoint haul and a typically hard working, inspiring performance. New defensive signing Tai Odiase wasn’t cleared in time to make his debut.

ROARING engines and squealing tyres will ring out across Tenerife South for the 28th annual Adeje Rally, spread over three days. It all revs up with the presentation of the 50 cars, and the ceremonial start from the Troya Beach car park, Avenida Rafael Puig, in Las Americas on Thursday (10th May) at 7pm. The serious action gets underway the following day as the cars leave the refuelling park in Avenida Bruselas, Costa Adeje, at 5pm, for the timed sprint to Taucho. This is followed by the 5.30pm run from Adeje BP to Santiago del Teide, 6.10pm from Santiago del Teide to Cuevo del Polvo, and, also, 6.45pm from Guia de Isora to the Siam Mall regrouping point, which completes Section One. There’s not much time for a breather because Section Two speeds off from Siam Mall to the refuelling park in Avenida Bruselas at 8pm. From there, the drivers head to Taucho at 8.35pm; Adeje BP to Santiago del Teide at 9.05pm, and Santiago del Teide to Cuevo del Polvo at 9.45pm. The last dash of the day features Guia de Isora to Avenida Bruselas at 10.20pm. The pace is hectic and

unrelenting, with little room for driver or engine problems. Day Two dawns with a 9am gathering at Siam Mall, for the short hop to Avenida Bruselas, followed by a 9.25am burst to Arona. And just because it’s the Adeje Rally doesn’t stop the drivers from paying a call to their neighbouring municipalities. The 10am stage is one of the longest, from Arona, through Vilaflor, and San Miguel to Granadilla. That sets up a 10.45am spurt to La Cisnera, followed by the 11.20am Arico-Fasnia to Parque La Reina section. The morning closes with a 12.25pm run from Adeje Karting to Siam Mall. If you are pausing, while working through these stages, don’t even think of becoming a co-pilot and navigator in one of the rally cars. Finally, it’s the home stretch, with the 1.10pm opening hop

from Siam Mall to Avenida Bruselas, followed by the 1.45pm sprint to Arona. Grab a breath and it’s the 2.20pm Arona-VilaflorSan Miguel to Granadilla. Granadilla to La Cisnera burns rubber from 3.05pm. Arico-Fasnia to Parque de la Reina screeches out at 3.40pm, and the Adeje Karting-Avenida Bruselas is the last chance to shave seconds of the two days’ overall timings. The judges will be compiling all the timings in hundreths of seconds, checking the cars to make sure no one has added an extra engine or two. They will emerge with a full run-down of placings for the prize-giving in Calle Grande, Adeje town, soon after 5.30pm. A word of warning: there will be lots of road-closures during the two days of racing, so please be patient and careful. Most of all, enjoy the racing!

CD Marino

Room to wriggle Real Betis 0 Egatesa Granadilla 1

Goal caps super show by Ahmed CD Marino 1 UD Lanzarote 1 BAGS of goalmouth action, tough tackles, and plenty of pride made for an excellent game, as hosts Marino shared the spoils with UD Lanzarote on Sunday.

FOURTH place was already assured for Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife, but victory at fifth-placed Real Betis was not just three more points. It was also a tactical victory for coach Toni Ayala, who rested Jackie Simpson and Pisco, because of their niggling injuries, which might have led to a moraledenting defeat. But the squad showed how strong they were, mentally as well as physically. Cindy Garcia ensured the away

win with a well-taken header, and the players closed ranks to ensure Betis could not get back into the game. The season’s penultimate league clash takes place tomorrow (Saturday) at home against Sevilla, at noon, in San Isidro. With the pressure off, the squad can enjoy the final league games before going into the top-eight, quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey (Queen’s Cup) later this month.

La Liga

Sky falls in on La Liga

EVEN the deep pockets of Sky Sports have a limit, because the TV company have just been outbid by Eleven Sports for UK coverage of Spain’s La Liga. It’s an ambitious company, owned by Italian Andrea Radrizzani, who is the Leeds chairman. Sky saw off BT Sport three years ago with a bid of just under £18m for a deal over the same time span. But although the new winning bid hasn’t been publicised, it has been reported that they weren’t keen to pay inflated prices. So, from the 2018-2019 season, Eleven Sports are calling the shots. They are looking at options for the UK market, and might use their existing

channels, which have a total of 17 million subscribers. They could also set up a new channel, or stream games, via the internet and social media. In theory, they can sell on individual games, so Sky Sports or BT Sports could cherry-pick big matches. Eleven companies already use this method to sell some of their US rights. Financial experts say that Eleven Sports are looking at buying limited rights to the English Premier League. It ‘s all getting extremely diverse and competitive, but the new deal is sure to pour more money into La Liga’s coffers. La Liga President Javier Tebas said: “We have worked very hard to promote the excellence of La Liga in the UK, and we are confident Eleven Sports will help us to grow and develop our brand.”

Recent home performances have lacked a cutting edge, but young Senegal forward Ahmed showed how much he has progressed this season, adding determination and variety to his game. Lobbing a 15th-minute shot over the bar simply served to sharpen Ahmed’s aim, and he was a constant thorn to the Lanzarote defence. At the other end, Rosmen led an early charge for Lanzarote, but he was blocked by Hector Pano. The visiting islanders were anxious to cement their fourth place, and, with it, a promotion play-off place. The win was on their mind, but they found Marino a tough nut to crack. Rosmen had another go, this time out wide, before feeding Borja for a shot, which was handled confidently by keeper David. But Marino, in a comfortable mid-table slot, showed they were up for the battle. Kevin Castro was a terrier in midfield, and Ahmed was no longer content to hug the right wing. He used his close control to make inside runs which opened up the Lanzarote defence. Ahmed was also linking well with Zeben to increase the pressure on the visitors. A well-played through-ball from Saavedra found Kevin in a threatening position, but he couldn’t quite exploit it. Yassine added powerful support to Marino’s positive attack, but Lanzarote were always a danger. A quick break and cross found Rosmen, whose hurried header cleared the bar. Ayoze got in on the act as he looked for a shooting chance, but Hector tidied up nicely, and Yassine hurdled a couple of Lanzarote tackles before losing the ball. The goal-less score at the break didn’t reflect the quality of play on offer from two committed teams.

Meyi set up the first chance of the second half, steaming down the left to supply Zeben, whose shot went straight at Lanzarote keeper Sasha. Ahmed played a neat interchange with Kevin, but his shot was deflected for a fruitless corner. And Marino had a lucky escape when a weak, clearing header from Hector hung teasingly in the air for Lanzarote, but keeper David cleared the danger with a top-class save. Ahmed’s two away goals the previous week had left him hungry for more, and, after a couple of near-misses. The final ball just eluded him both times, but he got his reward when a defender deflected a cross into his path, and his 62nd-

minute finish was perfect. Lanzarote were stung into action, with Rosmen putting one shot just over the bar from a free kick, and curling another attempt wide. A double substitution had refreshed the Lanzarote team, and new arrival Gaston put in a delicate chip, which was headed home by Rosmen to square the game, with 15 minutes left. It might have heralded a bombardment, but Marino took the play to their visitors and Ahmed was narrowly thwarted by the keeper, after Yassine had fired wide. Lanzarote seemed to sense that a point would be enough, and also a fair reflection of a well-contested match.
