Moroccans ran a mosque Continued from Front Their locale also contained a small mosque at the rear of the premises, to which they attracted many people, encouraging them to practise the jihadist vows and customs. The trio, aged 27, 35 and 37 respectively, who had radicalised the Moroccan jihadist over a long period, befriended him and financed a trip to Syria for him. They had persuaded
him to join the Al Nusra terrorist group, a Salafist jihadist organisation, fighting in the Syrian Civil War, and hoped he would establish an Islamic state in the country. The 35-year-old did go to Syria, in 2013, and they were able to keep in contact with him, regularly. But, two years later, he returned to Tenerife with severe, battlefield injuries, including the loss of his left hand, and damage to both ankles.
The three recruiters realised that his injuries would have made it impossible for him to stay in Syria, which is why he
Teide volcano will NOT be activated
THE English tabloids are at it again, predicting gloom and doom for Tenerife, following a swarm of minitremors experienced by the island over the last few weeks. So-called news has reached the UK about “the huge submarine fault”, situated
between Gran Canaria and Tenerife. One report said the fault line had not been active in recent times, but added: “What if it reactivated the Teide volcano? That would be cataclysmic.” In fairness, some reporters have highlighted that this could just be a “possibility”, but after being headlined in a few of the papers, especially in their online sites, the seed has already been sown. Some expats are al-
ready worried because more than 270 minor tremors have been detected over the last month. The Daily Mail has even stated that Teide is an active volcano, still extremely popular with the tourists, attracting some three million visitors a year. Maybe someone should tell their journalists that Teide’s last eruption occurred more than 100 years ago!
Tragic woman raped, and battered to death THE National Police are hunting a man who raped and murdered a 55-year-old woman, at her Añaza home in the Santa Cruz area. The horrific incidents took place inside her garage last October, when the woman, initially, suffered a violent sexual attack, and was
then beaten to death. Since then, there have been a further four attacks reported in the area, and, through DNA sampling, the police believe there could be a connection. The woman, who was injured severely, externally and internally, was rushed to a nearby health centre, but the medical team were able only to confirm her death. She had suffered dis-
figuring, facial injuries, as well as interior injuries, caused by sexual aggression. Her body was transferred to the Santa Cruz Medical Institute, where an autopsy was carried out, along with a DNA sampling. National Police are now searching, anxiously, for the rapistmurderer, who could, possibly, be linked to the other four attacks.
returned to Tenerife, sneaking in illegally, via a migrant boat. He was supported, financially, by his mentors, who also kept him under cover. But they realised that the task was proving just as difficult as it was for them, to hide their connections with Jihadist terrorism. They decided, jointly, that he should leave the Canary Islands and join other refugees from Syria and Libya across Europe, with the use of false documentation. But, while in central Europe, the man was arrested in Budapest for attempting to use false names to make a money transfer. He was later extradited to a
Moroccan location. During his time in Syria, the man transformed himself physically, specifically on his face. The word Zabiba was embedded on his forehead, in reverse, presumably, because he had his head on a prayer mat, constantly! The current operation, surrounding the three Moroccans, was carried out by Tenerife’s National Police and the Comisaría General de Información, in collaboration with Europol, its European C o u n t e r -Te r r o r i s m Centre. Overall, four specialists were sent to Tenerife and Madrid, in support of the Spanish authorities, to carry out forensic analysis. Canarian police undertook two house searches, and the investigation was conducted and supervised by the national courts. All three men were transferred to Madrid yesterday (Thursday) by helicopter, and will appear in court there today (Friday).

Crash killed Rajoy escort DIEGO Rodríguez, a member of Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s police escort team, was killed last Sunday after his motorbike was involved in a crash. A car collided with the off-duty policeman, and his 32-yearold pillion passenger, at around 4pm in Madrid. The car driver was, it seems, attempting to avoid another oncoming vehicle at a crossroads. Madrid Municipal Police provided confirmation in a tweet, also naming the victim. Both Rodriguez and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene, while the car driver received on-site counselling.

Blue Flag flying high again in the Canaries
TWELVE Tenerife beaches have been rewarded with a Blue Flag by the Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health. In all, the Canary Islands have achieved a total of 50 Blue Flags, one more than
presented last year, and five of them were also awarded to marinas across the archipelago. The Blue Flag criteria include excellent standards for bathing in the water; safety, environmental education and information, as well as the provision of services and general, environ-

SPAIN’S two island groups boasted seven of the country’s top 10 “most beautiful” beaches last year. And two of them featured in Europe’s top-10 list, including the No.1 position! The Canary and Balearic Islands featured strongly, the Canaries providing two in Gran Canaria, and one in Fuerteventura, while the Balearics supplied two in Mallorca, one in Ibiza and another in Formentera. But the 2017 summer’s Traveller’s Choice awards, by review website TripAdvisor, put La Concha, in the northern

Woman is attacked by ‘dangerous’ dog A WOMAN from Santa Cruz has lodged a report with the National Police against a neighbour, after being attacked by his dog while out walking her own pet. The 54-year-old woman, in her official police statement, claimed that the animal was classified as being in the “dangerous-dog” category. She maintained that it actually homed in on her, on the street, and, before she knew it, was climbing all over her, biting her left arm. The woman said that when she began to shout for help immediately, the dog’s owner appeared, asking her, in a blasé manner, what had happened? He admitted to being unaware that his dog had left the building, and thought it had, probably, escaped through the garage door.
The victim was invited into his home to clean her wounds, before she went to La Candelaria Hospital’s emergency department.
She was treated to prevent an infection, because of her inflamed skin. She also had skin punctures from the dog’s teeth.
Youngster couldn’t resist costly mobile A LAD of 15, who stole a mobile phone from a teenaged girl, has been detained and charged with theft by Gran Canaria National Police. The 18-year-old told police that her mobile had disappeared while she was walking with a group of friends through Maspalomas. She was sure that the phone,
worth 800 euros, had been stolen by someone in the group. Officers, who later questioned the minors, discovered that a 15-yearold boy had taken it while the owner was distracted. The youngster, who was arrested and charged with theft, will appear before the Las Palmas Juvenile Prosecutor’s court.

FOLLOWING the recent Earth Day celebration, Loro Parque, recognised by TripAdvisor as 2017’s Best Zoo in the World, is removing all singleuse plastics from its facilities. Workers have already started the process, with alternative, compostable and biodegradable materials replacing the disposable plastics, gradually. It is well known that the human population has been increasing, more and more in recent decades, and many scientists are stressing the importance of raising social awareness that we have entered into the era of the sixth extinction of our planet. In the last 100 years alone, the population has increased from 2,000 million to 7,600 million people. That means the stress on the planet has also escalated significantly, through the ever-growing exploitation of natural resources and spaces, and other, adverse, human activities. In the same time period, the elephant population has dropped from 10 million to under 450,000 individuals. Data referring to the

biodiversity situation in the oceans is even more alarming, as a result of overfishing and pollution, the latter mainly because
of the uncontrolled use of plastics. It is estimated that every year the oceans accumulate between 8-13 million tons
of plastics, which is 800 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower, or 34 times the surface of Manhattan. Scientists, analysing such
a tendency, believe that by 2050, there will be more plastic in the seas than fish. Loro Parque, recognising the importance of minimising the use of plastic, to contribute to conservation of biodiversity, has decided to take further measures in this direction. Initially, at least 80% of disposable plastics used in its facilities will be removed. Additionally, the park will continue to raise public awareness of the existing problems, and what individuals can do to help ease the situation. Loro Parque and the Loro Parque Fundación express their concern regarding the future of the planet, because pressure on natural resources will continue to grow. In the year 2050, 85% of the population will live in the cities, and life expectancy will reach 90 years. The zoological garden asks: “How can the planet deal with all these difficulties, if man does not start acting in the interests of the Earth?”

NEWS IN BRIEF Airline rides bumpy storm
RYANAIR appears to have flown through a storm of major complaints, following their pilot-roster error, along with thousands of cancelled flights last year. The number of passengers the Irish budget airline carried in April rose by one million, to 12.3 million customers, against the same period last year. The airline also said the number of seats it filled on each flight remained stable, at 96%. Ryanair added that its rolling, annual traffic, up to April, was a mighty 131.4m customers, which was an 8% improvement on 2017. As part of the airline’s “Always getting better” drive, Ryanair’s John Hurley also confirmed that its Android app now supports Google Pay. “This is at the cutting edge of mobile payment technology,” he said. “It is simple to set up, and makes booking flights even faster.”
Irishmen who slept on job
TWO Irishmen, both 26, have been charged with breaking and entering, after making their arrest so easy for the cops. The pair broke into a Gran Canaria holiday apartment, and, for reasons unknown, decided to take a nap there. Two female tourists, staying at the apartment, reported the break-in after they returned from a night out. They spotted that the door had been forced open, and a further inspection revealed that someone had been rifling through their belongings. The women then saw one man asleep in a chair, and his companion sleeping on the bed. Immediately, they informed the police, who, on arrival, had to wake the dozy pair from their slumbers. But the not-so-clever men were hard-pressed to explain to the officers why they were there. The women also realised they were missing a total of 280 euros, as well as a pair of designer sunglasses.
Jewel thief helped herself
A WOMAN was arrested in Santa Cruz after being accused of stealing jewellery, worth up to 20,000 euros. The 37-year-old woman was working as a house-keeper and carer for an elderly lady, at her home. National Police began investigating when they detected stolen jewellery being sold in the area. When officers questioned the woman, she admitted to thieving, and selling some of the jewels. She had been stealing them over a six-month period, taking advantage of her victim’s old age and trust. Happily, the cops recovered most of the jewellery and returned it to the old lady. But the thief, having been found guilty, must serve up to six months’ imprisonment for the theft.
Woman doctor’s death threat
A WOMAN, who screamed death threats at a female doctor in her local medical centre, has been detained by the National Police. A security guard, on duty at the Gran Canaria clinic, said the 49-year-old Spanish woman began insulting the doctor because she didn’t agree with what she was being told. She then began the threats, warning the bewildered doctor that she would later track her down and kill her. The guard called the police immediately, and the doctor confirmed his story. The woman now awaits a court hearing.
Adeje Radio gets even busier now ADEJE’S municipal radio station, Radio Sur Adeje 107.9FM, has recently added two new home-produced programmes to its line-up. “We are giving the listening public new alternatives here in Adeje,” said Communication Department Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Lineras. Tieffe Italia Sur, presented by Enmanuele Turbanti, is an information programme for the Italian community, featuring relevant news and a cultural agenda, as well as interviews, and goes out every Tuesday, from 1pm-2pm. After Work calls itself, “el programa de los juernes”, juernes being a play on the Spanish words for Thursday and Friday (jueves and viernes), and is presented by Ainhoa Aguilar and David Urbano, bringing a touch of humour and irony to the end of the week. These two new programmes means Radio Sur Adeje is
now broadcasting eight, home-produced shows, weekly. The flagship programme, Viva la Vida, is a two-hour morning edition, from 11am-1pm, presented by Nacho Palacio, with Yolanda Hernandez, as well as Lala Soto, and Gonzalo López and Juan Expósito making up the team. Viva la Vida has been on air for 20 years and can be heard between 11am-1pm, Monday to Friday. English Time, the Thursday lunchtime magazine programme in English, is presented by Clio O’Flynn, with regular contributors, and is now in its sixth year on air. It brings listeners a combination of local, national and international news, interviews, features, discussion and debate. The programme also informs the English-speaking population about local matters which may affect their dayto-day lives as residents of the borough. Stand by Me, presented by Nitu Jethwani, goes out
every Wednesday, between 1-2pm. It’s a music show, with a strong, human touch, as Nitu likes to tell listeners, in Spanish and English, a little bit about the songs they are listening to, and the history of the artists performing. Dani Ramos presents two programmes: Adeje en Juego, (Monday and Friday, 1-1.30pm) with sports news from the borough, and Sport Music, from 9am-11am, Monday to Friday, playing music to work to. The station also broadcasts regular and updated news bulletins throughout the day, during weekdays. Apart from regular programming, Radio Sur Adeje broadcasts live from many of the borough’s important events, such as the Good Friday Passion play, and Christmas and New Year events. It also uses its outsidebroadcast capacity to cover locally-based matters and happenings of general interest.

Puppy-poo
patrol
FOLLOWING a massive number of complaints from La Laguna residents, and from neighbourhood associations, regarding animal excrement on the streets, paths and parks, the Council and Local Police have placed two undercover officers in the area. They are reporting irresponsible pet owners, who leave their pet poos behind, and the officers, from the Local Police Ecological unit, have the power to file an official report, and fine the owners! This is a new directive, because, previously, police were only able to make pet owners aware with an official warning. Between 2016 and 2018, there were 207 official warnings, making owners aware of their pets’ actions, in the hope that they would learn to pick up the mess. La Laguna Mayor Ana María Oramas, who stressed that the owners were to blame, added: “It’s a matter of respect for other neighbours in the area, as well as respect for where we live. “People who do not comply by collecting their pets’ mess will be fined 200 euros upwards.” Sadly, many people paid no heed, obviously, because more than 50 fines were issued in just 20 days.

What a night! What a heat! TENERIFE Loves Karaoke, sponsored by Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, announced, this week, that the prize package for the winner has been increased.
It will now include 1,000 euros and the chance to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, and, also, a week’s all-inclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends. As well as these, there will be the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to arrange for you to have a portfolio and showcase, and the chance of a career in entertainment. This week, for the fourth heat, we headed back to a firm favourite of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, The Theatre Cabaret Bar in San Eugenio. In the past, they have produced some top-class singers and a great atmosphere for the contestants to perform in, and this time was no exception. As in all the heats this year, so far, The Theatre Cabaret Bar was full, with not a seat to be had, and we had a great, fun evening ahead of us, to look forward to. Gordon Slayney, the host for the night, got proceedings underway by introducing the four judges, and what they were looking for, explaining the voting, and talking about the prizes available for this heat’s winners, and the overall TLK winner. Clive was first to be called to the stage, and he sang an old favourite, the Bay City Rollers’ Shang a Lang. He was followed by a very-nervous Luci, who sang, beautifully, Anne Hathaway’s I Dreamed a Dream, which really got the crowd going. Steven was next up, singing Dancing On My Own, and

then a big surprise and a treat, a Blondie melody performed by Muriel. Taking us to the short break was Gert, singing a favourite wth the crowds, Blues All Rise. The second half got underway with Erin taking the stage, singing A Piece of my Heart, which got the biggest applause of the evening, Next in the proceedings was Asen, performing a verypolished version of Michael Bublés Feeling Good, which, again, received great applause. Janet was next to be called to the stage, and sang I Who Have Nothing. Brian performed Ain’t That a Kick in the Head?, and last, but not least, Pete finished off with Always on my Mind. After a short break, the judges confirmed who would be going into the sing-off, and Steven, Erin, Asen and Gert were the successful performers. Gordon invited all four to the stage and took their secondsong choices. The sing-off got under way with Gert singing the Eagles’ number, Tequila Sunrise. Erin then performed a karaoke favourite, Black Velvet by Alannah Myles. Asen was up next with When You Believe, and Steven finished with Ed Sheeran’s Perfect. Wow - what a singoff! I’m glad I wasn’t a judge that night. After another short interlude, Gordon invited all those in the sing-off to join him on stage, where it was confirmed that Asen and Erin would be going into this year’s semifinals. Both received their heat trophies, and meal vouchers from this year’s sponsors Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant.
All the singers who participated in heat four were brilliant, and those who came to watch this heat at The Theatre Cabaret Bar had a fun-filled night. Everybody at Tenerife Loves Karaoke would like to thank all the entrants, and the owners and staff at The Theatre Cabaret Bar, who made this another memorable heat, as well as our sponsors, Roy’s Pizza and
Indian Tandoori Restaurant. The next heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke is Wednesday, 16th May at The Rockin’ Horse, Amarilla Golf. If you would like to enter, to be in with a chance of winning 1,000 euros, performing at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, plus a week’s all-inclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to arrange a portfolio and showcase, and the chance of a career in entertainment, then call 822 14 15 17, or you can register, directly, at the venue. Rules are posted on Oasisfm.com. Terms and conditions apply. Don’t forget - you have to be in it, to win it!
Palm Mar is left behind, in postal no-man’s land
PALM MAR, an urbanisation with 20 years of history, suffered badly when construction came to a standstill during the recession. But the area is, finally, on the up. Its high-quality apartments are starting to appear on the market again, but residents still complain that it’s the forgotten village. Nearly 3,000 Palm Mar dwellers have received not a single letter through the post for over three months… not even replies from Arona’s Consumer Affairs Council, in response to their written complaints. A neighbour from El Mocan, in Palm Mar, says the Post Office has stated that it does not have
sufficient numbers of staff to accommodate this large, coastal village. Apparently, the problem is happening throughout the municipality, creating many postal problems. Resident Ana Belen says the reason is because there are no permanent postal staff at the main post office. She believes that temporary staff are contracted to work there, for minimal hours, and only the parcels remain a priority right now. The situation has been reported, and several authorities are now familiar with the situation. But many Palm Mar residents point out that the issue is taking forever to be resolved. And, as a result, many people are paying the consequences.

Make sure holidays don’t clean you out MORE than 20% of Brits holidayed abroad last year with inadequate travel insurance, or none at all, according to ABTA, the travel agents’ trade body. Of those who did insure themselves, some 25% risked invalidating their policies for failing to declare pre-existing medical conditions, or by taking part in activities which were not covered by their insurance. The most common reason people gave for not buying travel insurance was because they felt their European Health Insurance Card would provide sufficient cover. But the EHIC scheme provides access to state medical care only, and does not include repatriation to the UK. This could cost you thousands, should you require an air ambulance. Yet 30% of those surveyed said the cost of insurance put them off. The Association of British

Motorists’ radar warning SPAIN’S traffic police, ahead of a busy summer on the roads, have announced steep fines for drivers caught using radar detectors or inhibitors in their vehicles. The Guardia Civil reminds motorists, on the mainland and in Tenerife, that if a vehicle is stopped carrying a radar detector, the driver will receive an automatic 200euro fine, with three points lost from his or her driving licence. And should it have a radar inhibitor installed, he or she faces a 6,000-euro fine, and will have six points lost from the licence. The police have also stipulated that the margin of error for all their radar speed-detectors is now a standard 5%, whether they are installed in patrol cars or roadside devices.
Boys help man to rob houses in same street
Travel Agents (ABTA) is now urging people to avoid costly medical bills, should something go wrong, by doing their homework before taking their summer holiday. Chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “Every year, we
see cases of people falling into difficulty. “While not declaring existing medical conditions, or taking part in activities that aren’t covered, are easy mistakes to make, they can leave holiday-makers with medical bills that run into
thousands of pounds.” He added: “I’d urge every holiday-bound person, or family, to make sure they take out travel insurance, and check that it covers every circumstance, including their daredevil activities.”

In raids on their homes, they seized 12 hard drives, five USB memory sticks, five mobile phones, one microSD card and a SIM card, in addition to four laptops. Europol supported the Spanish National Police on Operation Sky, a complex investigation targeting the distribution of childsexual-exploitation material through darknet
platforms and Skype. The investigation, led by the National Police’s HighTech Crime Unit, began in mid-2017, and, initially, focused on the TOR network. Spanish investigators, prompted by clear evidence of the prolific sharing of indecent images, uncovered links which diverted users to a private group, accessible by invitation only, on Skype. The group members were, actively, exchanging
material on child-sexualabuse and exploitation. Operation Sky was aimed at clearly identifying, charging and prosecuting them for encouraging their sordid activities. Investigators monitored the activity online, using innovative, operational resources, in this complex case. They also dealt with the demands of various legal frameworks, in a worldwide probe.
A MAN and two youngsters have been detained, following a series of house robberies in La Laguna. National Police arrested the 26-year-old male and the two minors, one of whom had escaped from a juvenile centre. All three have been charged with breaking and entering, as well as using forced entry to gain access into the properties. The affected homes were all situated on the same street, Calle El Cristo, in El Cardonal, La Laguna. The police recovered jewellery and electrical items, mainly, which were returned to their owners.

A NEW holiday website enables naturists to book “clothing-optional” accommodation in sunshine holiday spots, including Spain.
Naturist BnB has been created by Petri and Minna Karjalainen, who enjoy holidaying in the nude. They describe themselves as being in their late 40s, who “learned to enjoy this lifestyle years ago”. Petri said: “Recently, we also started as a nudist Airbnb host, but we realised that the community does not really encourage nudist lifestyles. “That inspired us to create a site, dedicated to clothingoptional holidays, with the ease and convenience of Airbnb.” The site has been running for two months, and the couple already have properties on offer in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Canada, the US, England and Wales. They also offer advice about naturist etiquette. Petri warns: “When you go to any clothing-optional or nudist location, whether it is a beach, resort or private home, there is a common etiquette, which you must understand and obey. “Breaching the etiquette and refusing to correct your

Spain nearly out of Eurovision picture
THE publication of a photograph, portraying Spain’s Alfred and Amaia during rehearsals for the Eurovision Song Contest tomorrow (Saturday), almost led to the country’s expulsion. The Spanish singers, pictured, were close to being thrown out after a member of the professional jury, appointed by Spanish broadcaster TVE, published a photograph of the couple during general rehearsals. But regulations prohibit jury members from displaying material, publicly, which could influence the final votes. The photograph was deleted once the error was realised, and the
European Broadcasting Union, which accepted that it was “an involuntary error”, called off the threat. Spain’s entry in this year’s Eurovision 2018 contest, being staged in Lisbon, is Tu Cancion. The couple will be hoping to compensate for Spain’s dismal 2017 performance, when Do It For Your Lover, performed by Manel Navarro, finished 26th, and last! This year’s song, composed by Raul Gomez, was written for the duo, and the chemistry between them is clear. Spain has won the contest twice: in 1968 with the song La, La, La, performed by Massiel, and the following year with Vivo Cantando, performed by Salomé, which was in a four-way tie with France, the Netherlands and the UK.

A MOTORIST in Gran Canaria, known to the cops because of his colourful past, was spotted in his car by police on patrol, driving through Las Palmas city centre.
They realised he was a wanted man and approached the vehicle, insisting that he stop. But he drove away at high speed through the island capital, racing through a one-way system and mounting a few curbs, during a chase by a police car. Officers noted his reckless driving throughout the busy city, and they were concerned for the general public. The driver had a court order against him for a prison sentence, because of a drugtrafficking offence, but the police finally cordoned off the car and arrested the man, after a struggle. He was charged with resisting arrest, reckless driving and police disobedience, and, finally, he appeared before the judicial authorities.

Cats Welfare News USING the litter tray is second nature to most cats. Training kittens to use one is usually as easy as showing them where it is, and putting them in it. When you bring your cat home, the litter tray should be one of your first stops. Let them sniff it, and then place them inside it. They may dig around, or jump back out, but just place them inside it again in an hour or two. Often, cats will shun the tray if it's not in a quiet location that they can access at all times, but don't put it near their food or water. Cats are fussy about their trays, so to provide them with the most appealing waste facilities, you should clean it daily and change it weekly. Just as we don't like to use filthy, overflowing toilets, cats don't like wading through waste to find a patch of clean litter. Don't use litter that is scented, because it's only geared toward the owner, not the cat. Some cats will refuse to use trays containing heavily-scented litter, and they may prefer one type to another. The litter types are claybased clumping, clay-based
Litter training
non-clumping, crystal, and natural/biodegradable. If you experience problems getting a cat to use the tray, experiment with different types of litter. Wash your litter tray thoroughly every week or two. Over time, a litter tray will absorb cat urine (even with liners). Wash it thoroughly with soapy water every week, and be sure to rinse thoroughly after washing, so that it doesn't retain a strong detergent.
Getting used to a litter tray isn't difficult for most cats. If you know your cat's preferences, you're unlikely to encounter any unpleasant accidents. Injured cat This cat was found after having been hit by a car. Nothing is broken; he just has cuts and bruises. He is leukaemia negative and will be neutered. He is friendly, but a little nervous after his ordeal. A home is needed for
him in a few weeks' time. He is staying at Yaiza Vets in Los Cristianos, if anyone is interested in adopting him. Adoptions Please consider adopting a kitten/cat from us. Officer’s triple-murder plan gets him 22 years A JEALOUS Guardia Civil officer, from the Costa Blanca, has been jailed for 22 years after trying to murder a female colleague and her family.
The convicted Spaniard, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of spiking the victim’s food with rat poison and an insecticide, and robbing her of personal effects, including lingerie and a sex toy. Valencia’s Superior Court heard that he attempted to poison the woman, together with her husband and three-year-old son, “on several occasions”. He even sneaked into her property, on the Villajoyosa barracks where he also lived, after making a copy of her house keys, which he stole from the caretaker’s office. He recorded his thoughts on a computer, recov-
ered during a raid on his home. Extracts from the file, read in court, included: “She seems to be incredibly happy and I can’t stand it; she doesn’t let me sleep at night. Envy corrodes and chokes me.” He even admitted his
intention to harm the family, writing: “The time has come to see if I really have the courage to do this. I have planned it so many times in my head, but one thing is to think about it and another is to dare to do it. “I think I’m too cowardly,
Football transfer worth extra 36 million cheers Iniesta, at home on the pitch, and with the family wine business
A CHINESE Super League football club has offered to buy six million bottles of wine to seal a deal with Spanish player Andres Iniesta. Chongqing Dangdai Lifan officials are said to have offered the Barcelona centre mid-
fielder an 80-millioneuro deal over three years. And, to sweeten the deal, they also pledged to order six million bottles of wine from Iniesta’s family business, worth six euros each. That adds up to an astonishing 36m euros, which boosts the total transfer fee to 116 million euros, less the footballer’s cost of
producing the alcohol. Iniesta, whose goal won the World Cup for Spain eight years ago, said: “This is my last season here, and it is demanding to play here, year after year. But there are still things to be sorted. “I have said I will never play against Barca, so I won’t play in Europe… Barca has given me everything.”
but if I don’t do it, I think I’ll burst.” The victim first became suspicious when a USB pen drive, containing images of her in sexuallycompromising positions, went missing. Other belongings, including expired identity cards,
passports and car keys, later vanished while the family were out. It sparked an official probe, and, when detectives swooped on the culprit’s home, they unearthed the lost items, as well as a small bottle containing one of the toxic chemicals detected in the family’s food. After being convicted by Alicante’s Provincial Court, he appealed on the grounds that he had laced the food with “very small doses, without risk to the family”. But prosecutors argued, successfully, that he had concocted “a murderous plan”, and that, since he was not a toxicology expert, “he was unable to tell whether the doses were harmless or not. They also reminded the court that one of the victims was a child and another [the husband], was having cancer treatment. The judge ruled that the officer was guilty “without a doubt,” in the wake of the hearing.

MORE than 50 people were arrested, and 52 luxury cars seized, in raids led by Spain’s National Police force and the Tax Agency.
This major offensive, named Operation Dreams, also recovered 400,000 euros in cash, IT equipment and one weapon in the raids, which stretched across Europe and were supported by Europol and Eurojust. More than 100 homes or premises were searched, and 58 suspects were arrested in Belgium, Germany, Portugal and Spain, in the Operation Dream. Authorities from Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy and Romania were also involved in the investigations into the fraud, estimated to have cost the EU economy 60 million euros. This huge probe began in 2015, when Spanish authorities were alerted to a criminal gang, specialising in VAT fraud and money-laundering. The group carried out, or simulated, imports and purchases of electronic goods, both real and fake, which were sold online. The criminal organisation was composed mainly of Italian, Portuguese and Spanish nationals. It was, allegedly, managed from Spain by a father and son, Spanish nationals of Indian origin, who are believed to have been operating for more than nine years across Europe. The group had a network of more than 100 companies across Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania, Spain and the US. The network also owned a production centre, creating false invoices to perform VAT fraud on electronic goods, as well as on the import of luxury vehicles below invoice price. Investigations revealed that the group issued false invoices, adding up over 250 million euros in three years. They also discovered that the money was layered among the large network of shell companies, before being funnelled to Bulgarian or Hungarian bank accounts. In particular, the organisation moved more than 140m euros in two years, via two

Hungarian shell companies. The group then used different methods to integrate its profits, such as investments in real estate and real businesses, or the
purchase and sale of luxury vehicles. The final destinations of the crime proceeds were Italy, Spain and the US. Europol organised two operational
meetings in Madrid and The Hague, and attended one co-ordination meeting at Eurojust. On the day the action began, they also provided on-the-
spot support by deploying an analyst and a specialist to Spain, equipped with a mobile office and a Universal Forensic Extraction Device. This allowed real-time information exchange, along with cross-checks of the data gathered against Europol databases. Following the operation, Jari Liukku, Head of Europol’s European Serious and Organised Crime Centre, said: “Staggering sums of money are being taken, directly, from European Union citizens, by organised crime groups. “It is depriving us all of essential services and infrastructure, such as security, health, education or justice, which should be funded by the proper collection of this revenue.” He added: “By its very nature, this is an international, cross-border offence, requiring a co-ordinated approach between Member States’ police services, customs administrations and tax authorities. “The impressive results of Operation Dreams show us, once more, what can be achieved when lawenforcement agencies work together, with the support of Europol and Eurojust.” But he also warned: “Despite the various efforts made, the threat of MTIC fraud remains significant.”
Airline pilots’ strike is nuisance for travellers LAST week’s twoday strike by pilots of Spanish budget airline Vueling forced 222 cancellations on the Thursday and Friday, many from its Barcelona base. Most were domestic, but a small number affected Gatwick and Luton airports, while Vueling predicted that 86% of passengers were not affected by the pilots’ down-tools protest against low wages. It was the second Vueling pilots’ strike in the company’s history,
following last month’s two 24-hour strikes. Spanish airline pilots union (SEPLA) and Vueling, owned by British Airways’ parent company International Airlines Group, have, so far, failed to reach an agreement over claimed breaches of employment contracts, and the airline’s refusal to guarantee greater
growth in Spain than in its foreign bases. Currently, Vueling has around 1,000 pilots based in Spain, and some 150 overseas. But it is feared that this could change as bases are moved abroad. Juan Manuel Redondo, head of the trade-union section of SEPLA at Vueling, said: “Now that
Vueling is tripling its profits, and even though there have even been distributions of up to 100 million euros of dividends before results, the conditions for the pilots do not change.” The union claims Vueling pilots receive 30% less on average than their main competitors, including Ryanair and easyJet.

Daredevil jumpers strike rock-bottom
FOUR British expats are each facing a fine of up to 300,000 euros after being caught trying to parachute from an iconic, 33-floor building on the Costa Blanca seafront.
The unnamed thrillseekers were said to have been surprised by police as they prepared to launch them-
selves off Benidorm’s 120-metre Torre Levante skyscraper, with parachutes strapped to their backs. Their arrests followed tip-offs to investigators about a series of internet videos, filmed by the BASE jumping quartet. An official, who revealed that the daredevils were suspected of performing several, illegal jumps in the area, confirmed that their parachutes, helmets and other equip-
ment had been seized. BASE jumping, the practice of parachuting from a fixed structure or cliff, is considered much more dangerous than skydiving from a plane, because of the relatively-low height of the jumps. The abbreviation stands for Building, Antenna, Span and Earth (cliff), which are the four types of places from which followers of the extreme sport, typically, hurl themselves.
The only way is Britain for £4m drug-plot man JAMIE Acourt, a former suspect in the murder of Stephen Lawrence, will not be challenging his extradition, after being arrested in Barcelona.
The 41-year-old, wanted in connection with a £4m drug plot, had been on the run for two years, and he accepted that he would be returned to the UK, said the National Crime Agency. The south Londoner, one of the UK’s mostwanted fugitives, tried to convince police that he was an Italian tourist when they arrested him, at gunpoint, in a Barcelona gym last Friday. He had been wanted by the Metropolitan Police since 2016, and was captured as part of Operation Captura, an initiative between the UK’s National Crime Agency and
Crimestoppers, who were aided by the National Crime Agency and Spanish National Police. “Acourt thought he could evade capture, but, as a result of an intelligence-led operation, his days on the run have ended,” said Ian Cruxton, head of the NCA’s International operations. Acourt, who has always denied involvement in the killing of Stephen, was last seen in the UK on 1st February, 2016, in south London. He was one of five suspects investigated
over the racist murder of 18-year-old Stephen in Eltham, south-east London, in 1993. Gary Dobson and David Norris were jailed in 2012. Acourt was among 10 fugitives, said by Crimestoppers to be wanted in Britain for a variety of crimes, including murder, drugrunning, fraud and paedophile offences. It was thought that Acourt, who is related to Elliott Wright, of TV’s The Only Way Is Essex, was living the high life in Marbella. Not any more, though!

A severely-beaten, unnamed couple were found near a motorway slip road. The man, believed to be 52, from Ukraine, who had been thrown down a twometre embankment with his legs bandaged, died from his injuries. His Colombian partner, 54, was found wandering by the A-7 motorway, her face covered in blood. Detectives believe they
were abducted and tortured, before being dumped near the Costa del Sol Hospital. The alarm was raised when a passing motorist stopped, after spotting the disorientated woman pleading for help. She was taken to hospital with head injuries and “multiple wounds”, but medics were unable to revive the man. Police officers confirmed that he had suffered heavy blows “over all of his body”. Initial inquiries suggested that the pair were taken hostage during last weekend, and that the woman had pretended to be dead, before they were abandoned.
Exam cheats fail to pass
NEARLY 50 people, using false documentation, have been arrested by the National Police for taking Spanishlanguage exams. They had been paid up to 2,000 euros to pose as foreigners, and take exams on behalf of third parties. The scam involved the de-
fendants taking the DELE A2 exam, which forms part of an internationallyrecognised diploma, accredited by the Ministry of Education. The fees varied, depending on how many parts of the exam had to be taken, and on the third-party’s nationality. Arrests were made in Barcelona, Valencia, Mallorca and Huesca, among other areas.

Hash-traffickers sail too close to the wind
A JOINT sting, by Spanish National Police, Guardia Civil and Tax Agency, led to a whopping 3.7-tonne hashish haul, worth 17.7 million euros, seized in southern Spain. Fourteen people were held during raids in the
Andalucian provinces of Cadiz, Malaga and Huelva, plus the North African Spanish enclave of Ceuta. In addition, three modified speedboats, equipped with high-powered engines, a yacht, a fishing boat, nine cars and guns, as well as more than 100,000 euros in cash, were seized. The raid followed an 18-month probe, sparked when drug-enforcement
investigators were alerted to a suspicious, semirigid boat, which docked repeatedly in Marbella’s Bajadilla Marina. It was soon evident that the vessel was being used by a drug-trafficking gang, based in the Campo de Gibraltar area of Cadiz. The first two arrests were made when a boat, sailing from El Terron in Huelva to Morocco, was intercepted
in February, carrying 1.5 tonnes of hashish. A month later, a second craft was tracked as it travelled from Cadiz to Morocco, leading to four additional gang members being put behind bars. And intelligence gained from these swoops allowed detectives to identify the ringleaders, which fuelled the latest round of eight arrests.

Evil cat-killer may be jailed
POLICE have tracked down a teenager, who posted shocking footage on social media of her killing a cat by putting it in the spin cycle of a washing machine. The 19-year-old girl, from Villarrubia de los Ojos, in Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha, is now facing animal-cruelty charges, and could even be jailed. During the horrific video, the woman can be heard saying after the first cycle: “Looks like people were right about cats having seven lives.” She then added detergent to the washing machine and put it on another wash cycle. More than 300,000 people signed a petition, on change.org, to lobby the Ministry of Justice to take the case to court. Animal rights political group PACMA also voiced its outrage, calling for “the maximum penalty for animal cruelty”, which is 18 months in prison and a three-year ban from keeping animals. After posting the video on social media, the woman uploaded a picture of the cat from before the incident, which said: “The cat is now dead…Yes the bad luck cat.”

Pound/euro struggles By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
IT can save you time and money to stay on top of the latest currency news, especially with the Bank of England's (BoE) latest rate decision looming.
Latest currency news Sterling has posted a mixed performance against the euro over the past two weeks, rising initially on a dovish European Central Bank (ECB) rate decision, but facing pressure late on, as markets reacted to a poor Q1 GDP print, and a disappointing, privatesector performance in April. Over the past two weeks, GBP/EUR slipped from highs of 1.1511 euros to 1.1388, whilst EUR/GBP saw highs of £0.8857 falling to £0.8804. Meanwhile, GBP/USD has fallen from highs of $1.3995
to $1.3596, and EUR/USD has collapsed from $1.2242 to $1.1977 What’s been happening? The predominant cause of the pound's ongoing struggles has been the surprising U-turn in the Bank of England's monetary-policy expectations, with weak Q1 economic growth, and a raft of disappointing UK PMI results now expected to push the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) away from raising interest rates, on Thursday. The euro has also suffered from a dovish central bank,
however, with weakening inflation and low Q1 growth expected to prevent a rate hike from occurring for the foreseeable future, and, perhaps, even extend the bank's bond-buying programme, beyond September. Across the pond, on the other hand, the US dollar has seen a broad rally, supported by unemployment dropping to 3.9%, and a marked rise in personalconsumption expenditure (the US Fed's preferred measure of inflation). This has, effectively, positioned the US Fed
as the more-hawkish option in the eyes of the markets, thus making the dollar the more-attractive investment. What do you need to look out for? This week's BoE's rate decision on “Super Thursday” will likely dominate headlines, with a dovish announcement liable to kick GBP/EUR into the doldrums. There is, however, a chance that the central bank will provide a balanced statement; hesitant to be too dovish for the sake of their own credibility, given that
they had repeatedly pointed to a rate hike occurring in May. For the euro and the US dollar, investors will be keeping a close eye on the US consumer price inflation results and the ECB's economic bulletin, both also due on Thursday. Investors are currently quite bullish on the “Greenback”, because of the aforementioned hawkishness of their central bank. If the US data continues to remain positive, then we could see the US dollar continue to siphon demand away from the euro, and, to a lesser extent, the pound. Banco Popular shares ‘Idiot’ driver hits purchase is cancelled the wrong chord A MAN was caught playing a guitar while driving a British-plated car with his knees, on a Mallorca motorway.
By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
AN Oviedo Court in northern Spain has recently issued a judgement, cancelling a customer’s purchase of Banco Popular shares, regarding the 2016 capital increase, as well as three subsequent acquisitions. The resolution, subject to appeal, condemned the bank, and annulled the 5,000-share purchase, for 5,454 euros, made by the claimant between June and November 2016. According to the judgement, the bank must refund the principal amount, plus interest. But the claimant has to return the share titles, and repay the benefits obtained (plus interest), during the time he owned the bonds. The judge considered that there was a “notable difference” between the inherited and financial situation of the bank, which
determined the consequent intervention. He also said that the “the public-offer brochure stated that it was “the most profitable bank in the Spanish market, although in attention to certain parameters”. This “irregular” information led the claimant to misunderstand the profitability of his investment. The bank revealed a “distinctly different” situation, until it was intervened and sold for one euro to another bank company, with a loss of the client’s investment. It also pointed out that, had the claimant known about the bank’s financial situation, he would not have invested his savings. But the client had no “financial knowledge” because he was not a trade investor. This argument has been
used by many courts in cases of the so-called “Preferentes” (financial products), in which the bank did not give clients details of the whole situation, especially the risks taken by buyers of such a product. Likewise, it warns that the argument, from which the bank’s performance was approved by the Trade National Control Commission, cannot be estimated, given that the bank presented to potential investors, “an image of solvency that did not conform in any way to reality”. The “idiot” appears to be relaxed and enjoying strumming a tune, while ignoring the danger of his reckless behaviour. The driver looks as though he’s steering the car with his knees, while driving at speed on the Palma Inca motorway. He has not yet been identified, but he is believed to be British, because of the car’s registration plate and right-hand steering wheel. Guardia Civil officers are said to be searching for the man, who could face charges of reckless driving, six points on his licence, and a 500-euro fine, in addition to a temporary driving ban. Local news website Cronica Balear said a video, which has gone viral, was recorded on Saturday, 28th April, at 7pm, after being uploaded to social media.
“Look at this video because it’s legendary,” said a laughing Spaniard, as he filmed the incredible incident. “I never expected to see recklessness like this on a motorway.” But Cronica Balear, which condemns the driver, appears to be tired of this sort of behaviour, which becomes more and more common as summer approaches. Cronica wrote: “We have seen all types of carelessness on the roads: drivers talking on the phone, putting on makeup, reading a map or paper and eating, or even drinking alcohol. “But, in the Balearics, we can now add this sad image to the list: an idiot driving, while playing his guitar!”

David Collins (Lee Ingleby) is unexpectedly acquitted on a technicality having served seven years of a life sentence for the murder of his wife Tara. On the steps of the court he vows to bring to book those who lied at his original trial, to see the real killer jailed and more importantly, to regain custody of his two young children Jack and Rosie. The verdict is a terrible shock to Tara’s sister, Alice (Hermione Norris) and her husband Rob (Adrian Rawlins). Unable to conceive, together they have raised the kids as their own and they are precious beyond belief to both of them. The verdict is also a blow to DI Will Beech (Nigel Lindsay). Will was the original investigating officer and he is angered by the inference that his investigation was flawed …he absolutely believes that David killed his wife. Finally, the verdict seems extremely troublesome to Dr. Tom Wilson (Elliot Cowan). However, for David’s brother Phil (Daniel Ryan) it is a triumphal moment. For seven years he has campaigned tirelessly and selflessly to free his brother. Now penniless and struggling for money, David is forced to accept the charity and hospitality of his brother. DI Beech is immediately suspended from the new investigation and is replaced by DI Cathy Hudson (Angel Coulby) who, unknown to her commanding officer, is in a relationship with Beech. As he enquiry gains pace and inconsistencies are unearthed, it things become increasingly awkward for them both. Tom’s ex-wife Louise (Christina Cole) coolly orders Tom to give her more money to pay for the upkeep of their children but we sense that an implicit threat lies behind her demand. David, Alice and Rob independently seek legal advice regarding David’s custody claim. He wants his children back and is incensed to discover that the courts will take months to reach a judgement. Equally, Rob and Alice are determined to resist any attempt to grant access and the battle lines are drawn and both children are deeply upset at the prospect of their father regaining custody. When David went to jail he lost everything. His house was forfeit to his in-laws who used the proceeds from the estate to buy a new house for themselves, something large enough to accommodate Jack and Alice. As DI Cathy Hudson opens her new investigation she recruits a small dedicated team and asks to meet David. David reluctantly agrees and although Cathy tells David she still believes he is guilty, asks him to consider who else might have had a motive to murder Tara.

The documentary uncovers the little-known but crucial role of the trusted Red Collars, who have been at the Academy from the very beginning and are responsible for the day-to-day running of the building and shines a light on the secret vaults where the Academy’s collection of antique silver is kept. It also offers an insight into the nationally designated art collections including the renowned Diploma Works. The Diploma Works come from the tradition of every Academician donating one piece of their own art work; it is a living collection that is still evolving today, consisting of astonishing works by Turner, Constable, Sickert, Sargent, Laura Knight, Grayson Perry, Tracey Emin, David Hockney and many more.

Burma With Simon Reeve Sunday 13th May, BBC2, 21.00
Simon Reeve travels to beautiful and troubled Burma, also called Myanmar, for a new two-part series. Simon Reeve travels to beautiful and troubled Burma, also called Myanmar, for a new two-part series. Cut off for decades under military rule, Burma now has a democratically elected government led by worldfamous Nobel laureate, Aung San Suu Kyi. But in August 2017, the world was left stunned when a brutal military operation drove hundreds of thousands of ethnic Rohingya Muslims from their homes. On his journey Simon discovers a divided country – where life is steadily improving for many, while others still live in terror of the military who still have enormous power in the country. In the first episode, Simon travels to the biggest city in the country, Yangon to find out how the country is transforming. From there he drives north, into Burma’s Buddhist heartlands and the stunning ancient capital of Bagan – a sight that rivals the great wonders of the world. He meets the monks who supported the people through the darkest days of dictatorship. And he’s granted an audience with some of the most contentious figures in the country – ultranationalist monks preaching hate against the country’s Muslim Rohingya. Banned from visiting the scene of the military crackdown against the Rohingya, Simon travels to Bangladesh to meet the refugees traumatised by the violence. In what is now the biggest refugee settlement in the world, he learns about a crisis that has been brewing for decades, with no sign of ending, and potentially grave consequences for the wider region.

What Makes a Woman?
Wednesday 16th May, Channel 4, 22:00
Transgender model and social activist Munroe Bergdorf examines the changing world of gender and identity, as she becomes both author and subject of her first UK documentary. The film follows Bergdorf undergo dramatic facial feminisation surgery as part of tackling her gender dysphoria - a hugely personal moment that kick starts an exploration of the central question: What Makes a Woman? This immersive personal journey takes Munroe from the runway at New York Fashion Week to a brain scan for a cutting-edge gender experiment. Munroe interrogates the science and social norms of gender, to understand how our body, behaviour and brains help define who we are. Outspoken in her views on transgender rights, Munroe meets others with opposing thoughts and opinions. ‘I’m beyond excited to share this documentary with everybody,’ says Munroe, ‘filming has been an emotional and turbulent journey.’.
Heart Transplant: A Chance To Live Monday 14th May, BBC2, 21.00
Fifty years since the first British heart transplant, this science documentary takes a look at a year in the lives of seven people in desperate need of a new heart and the extraordinary medical teams using cutting edge technology to save them. In the UK there is a chronic shortage of suitable organs being donated for transplant. Fewer families consent to donate in the UK than anywhere else in Europe and logistics further limit the number of organs available. The average adult waits more than 1,200 days for a heart transplant and last year more than 30 people died waiting. The film meets patients and their families living life on the waiting list and hospital staff and surgeons working against the clock, to gain a unique insight into one of the most complex operations to undertake. Surgeons have been searching for an answer to this problem for years - and now believe they have made the pivotal breakthrough. Using an extraordinary process called Ex Vivo Perfusion, doctors can reanimate hearts, medicate them and keep them alive outside the body, keeping the deterioration process at bay whilst they are transported to the recipient patient. This means organs can be sourced from much further away, immediately widening the donor pool.
Nigeria’s Stolen Daughters
Tuesday 15th May, BBC2, 21.00
On 14 April 2014, 276 school girls aged between 16 and 18 were kidnapped from a school in Chibok, Northern Nigeria. They were taken by Boko Haram, a violent Islamic insurgent movement, and hidden in the vast Sambisa forest. Following a global social media campaign around the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls, featuring global celebrities and Michelle Obama, huge pressure was brought to bear on the Nigerian Government to get the girls back. Four years later more than 100 of the girls have been freed; they have been kept in a secret safe house in the capital Abuja. For the first time TV cameras have been granted access to the girls and in this powerful 60 minute documentary made by Blakeway Productions for BBC Two’s award winning This World strand and HBO Documentary Films we follow them as they adapt to life after their traumatic imprisonment at the hands of Boko Haram. We witness reunions with family members they have not seen since they day they went missing and the process of coming to terms with what has happened to them. The Chibok Girls live in a gilded cage, cut off from contact with the world’s media and provided with education and counselling that continues as they move into government funded places at the American University of Nigeria. Their fate could not be more different to the thousands of other Nigerian women who have fallen prey to Boko Haram. In the brutalised city of Maidugari we meet some of these ‘Forgotten Girls’. They have deeply disturbing stories of their treatment at the hands of Boko Haram and their troubles haven’t ended on their escape from the forest; in Maidugari they are often treated with suspicion because of their connection with Boko Haram. Female suicide bombers have killed scores of people in the city. And for the ‘Forgotten Girls’ there are none of the privileges afforded the Chibok Girls – many live hand to mouth in the slums and refugee camps, abandoned by the Nigerian state. Nigeria’s Stolen Daughters is a moving and terrifying insight into Nigeria’s brutal civil war.

Sofia Helin and Thure Lindhardt reprise their roles as Saga Norén and Henrik Sabroe in the concluding installment of the smash hit Scandinavian crime drama, this time airing on BBC Two. Almost two years after we last saw Saga and Henrik a woman is found brutally murdered on Pepparholm island, at the base of the bridge. It transpires that she is Margrethe Thormod, General Director of the Migration Agency in Copenhagen and the killers motive may lie in a recent and highly publicised deportation scandal that affected Margrethe personally. With Saga incarcerated in the women’s prison in Ystad, convicted of murdering her mother, Henrik is forced to investigate the macabre murder with his new abrasive Danish colleague, Jonas Mandrup (Mikael Birkkjǣr) but he misses Saga terribly. Knowing that she is having a hard time in prison he visits as often as she will let him and wants her to help him with the new case, but Saga points to the fact that she isn’t a police officer anymore.

The A- Z Of Chelsea BBC1, 18.00
08:25....................... Eat the Week with Iceland
The A-Z Of Chelsea is an entertaining and affectionate romp through its history to discover the people, plants and designs that have made it the greatest flower show on earth. From its legendary designers to the judges, Chelsea Pensioners to the Queen, nurseries to veg growers, this is the definitive guide to the great event that heralds the start of the British Summer Season. Taking us on this voyage of floral discovery will be a regular visitor to the event and keen gardener Jennifer Saunders. She’ll be joined by seven times Gold medal winning designer and Gardeners World presenter Adam Frost who’ll impart his knowledge gleaned from years of taking part as both presenter and award winning designer. With the alphabet as their guide, Jennifer and Adam will be stepping back in time to guide us through the highlights of over 100 years of Chelsea magic, each letter representing a significant element of this British institution. No stone will be left unturned as they reveal everything you ever wanted to know about Chelsea, but were afraid to ask! We’ll be reuniting with the most influential Chelsea designers, including a special profile of Sarah Eberle, Chelsea’s most prolific gold medallist, to share their memories of winning big at the show and looking back at some of the game changing creations that transformed the event into the world leader it is today. Away from the showground, Gardeners World presenters Arit Anderson and Frances Tophill travel across the UK to meet nursery folk as they prepare to exhibit in the Great Pavilion and uncover the secrets behind their successes at the show. And we discover how Chelsea tendrils grow global following Chelsea first timer Jonathan Snow as he travels to Italy to source plants for his South African inspired design! Jennifer and Adam will be donning their high vis and steel toe caps as they meet the RHS team, designers and landscapers to experience the enormous effort required to get the grounds of the Royal Hospital in Chelsea show ready for May 21st. Plus they’ll be exclusively revealing just some of the exciting exhibits and gardens we can look forward to seeing at the event this year.

This Time Next Year
In the final episode, Davina meets Welsh schoolgirl Elan, age 14, who has been singing since she was very young and competing in Welsh folk competitions since she was seven. She dreams of being a professional singer and by this time next year she wants to have a record deal. In 2015, Mike was involved in a bad motorcycle accident on his way to work which ended up in him having his lower leg amputated. When he meets Davina again in 12 months, Mike - who is currently in a wheelchair - wants to be able to walk unaided. Steve and Baishali have been married for four and a half years and began trying for a baby not long after their wedding. Following complications Baishali was told she had scarring of the womb known as Asherman’s Syndrome. By this time next year with the help of surrogate Beccy, the couple want to be able to start their own family. Millie, age 11, has type 1 diabetes and can’t tell when her sugar levels are too high or too low without testing her blood so can’t be left alone. If her sugar levels fall too low she could go into a coma, and too high she could be hospitalised.

Entertainment
11th May - 17th May 2018
Dale’s global travels add up to wealth of musical experience KEDDY’S Entertainment is officially launching its “act department” from 1st June, and heading up this, and managing the operations, is Louise, our senior act manager. The following article is all about one of the artistes, who make up our wonderful portfolio, here in Tenerife. While it is always lovely to welcome new acts to Tenerife, it’s a great pleasure to see old faces returning to the island, to perform for us all again. Keddy’s Entertainment caught up with Dale Phillips, to find out what he has been up to since leaving here, and his journey which brought him back to Tenerife. He is sometimes known by his Dale Sixstring stage name, and is no stranger to Tenerife, having come here first in the early 1990s. And he has always referred to the island as his second home, knowing it was where he would, one day, settle down. Dale emigrated in February, from the UK, with his longterm partner and their young son, to enjoy all the beautiful island has to offer. He is a self-taught guitarist, who began learning the path of music in 1989, which, by many standards, was late, because he was already19. For the first 10 years of his career, he concentrated mostly on original bands and writing, playing around the Midlands in various Rock, Funk, Indie and Acid Jazz Original Bands. He left home in 1991 to head to Tenerife, feeling akin to the island, where he returned, occasionally,
throughout the 1990s, each time staying for a number of months. Music and travelling have always gone hand-in-hand in Dale’s life, and, in 1998, he left to go backpacking around South East Asia, with his guitar. On his return the next year, he began a relationship with Tracy, who became his long-term partner, and they formed a duo called Itchy Feet. They set about living up to their stage name, and, for the next decade, performed on stages around the world.
Starting with Gran Canaria, Dale and Tracy worked as a duo, and then hopped over to Tenerife, where they played for over a year at The Patch, in Las Americas, during the early Noughties. Next, they moved to Vienna, to concentrate on writing music and performing. This included a party for MTV, and regular gigs in the city. They clinched a management deal in Austria, recording their own songs in a Vienna studio. Having gained more experience, they moved to Japan, where they played
festivals for two summers, performing in Kokura and Kumamoto, on skyscraper roof terraces, and selling their original CDs to their Japanese fans. While in Asia, a journey to Seoul, South Korea, secured them a six-month contract, playing as residents in the 5-star, super-deluxe, Westin Chosun hotel. Continuing on to the Middle East, Itchy Feet performed at the UAE’s Hilton, and then began working for P&O Cruises, playing throughout the Mediterranean and Caribbean as the resident duo, sometimes fronting the House Band. Finally, before returning to settle in the UK for a while, Dale and Tracy worked nightly at a Mallorcan hotel. Dale has played with Tracy in various Rock/Pop function bands, as well as their original band Masca, named after the village here in Tenerife. That is where they found a young puppy in 2000, and named her Bonny (Bonita), whom they cared for, kept and travelled with as much as they could for the following 13 years. After Bonny’s departure, Dale and Tracy decided it was time to become parents, which is when Dale began to study and work on his solo career. He studied, full-time, for three years at university, doing a Popular Music Degree, and attaining a First Class BMus (Hons). He then completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Music Technology, achieving Distinction Level. Over the following years, he taught as a peripatetic guitar teacher at primary and secondary schools, and studied for an Adult Teaching Certificate (PTLLS). And, before leaving for Tenerife recently, he was
a part-time, college guitar tutor. In recent years, Dale played in Malaysia, at the International Jazz Festival, and Kuala Lumpur’s College of Music. During and after his adult education, Dale formed, managed and played in various UK function bands. He also began to play solo, regularly, performing upbeat shows with the electric guitar, and also more intimate, acoustic gigs. He is also a music producer, and, in 2013, he wrote, recorded and produced his debut solo album. Since then, Dale has been composing music for TV and the media. His placements have included MTV Channel (USA and Europe), The Discovery Channel (USA), TV Network (Canada), a car advert for Renault (Australia) and an educational language DVD (UK). He is currently writing and producing theme music for a Tenerife venue. Now, however, having moved to Tenerife, Dale’s main priorities are his family, and providing a lovely lifestyle for his young son. When not performing and producing music, he enjoys the island’s fantastic variety on offer. He also concentrates on studying Tai Chi Chuan, and is a qualified instructor. If you would like more information about Dale, or any other acts, drop Louise an email at louise@ keddysentertainment.com or call our office between 9.30am-5.30pm, Monday to Friday, on 922 096 975. For now, though, enjoy all the Tenerife entertainment there is on offer… and stay happy!

Are you sitting comfortably?
THEN I’ll begin! Seating in the home is a vital element for being comfortable, and able to relax in your own environment. Most homes will have a sofa, and, because of our holiday environment and the need to increase capacity for visitors, many of these will be sofa-beds. But, apart from the sofa, there are lots of other options you can explore, which can increase the amount of
seating in your home. Many of them are dual-purpose, so you can get the maximum benefit from them. For example, an armchair that matches the sofa will probably take up a lot of room, because it will have the same style of arms which occupy a lot of space. If you work with a good interior designer or furniture shop, you should be able to buy just a sofa rather than a set, or buy a different style of armchair in the same fabric. A club chair, which is small and rounded, can be upholstered to match the sofa, so that it “belongs” and saves space. Alternatively, upholster it in a toning colour or pattern, and make some scatter cushions for the sofa in the same material, so that it looks very “designer”.
Many British visitors particularly like sofas and chairs with higher backs, which are not particularly popular in Spain, so, having a sofa made locally to the client’s specific requirements is an added bonus, and not as expensive as you might expect. Sometimes, if you
have more guests than you have chairs, consider dual-purpose items such as pouffes, which, again, can be upholstered to match the sofa, and used as a footstool or spare seat, as needed. They can also be made with a hinged top so you can use them for storage, and
can be made to a size to suit your property. Some houses have bay windows, which can make perfect spots for installing an upholstered window bench. This will provide extra seating space whenever necessary, and it will be the preferred relaxation place for those
who enjoy reading. If you don’t have a dining table inside the property, consider some stools for the kitchen area facing the breakfast bar, or put a shelf on an adjoining wall, to make a little breakfast nook. Dining chairs need to be functional, comfortable and supportive, so you can linger over your meal, although, generally, more time is spent outside, rather than eating inside. If you do like to eat outside, consider upright terrace chairs that can be used as dining chairs, but which also recline, so that you can use them to relax or sunbathe. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, who will give free, noobligation quotes in the comfort of your own home. Call them on 922 789 729.
Junk food may spoil chances of pregnancy
By Val Sainsbury NOT many things can be more upsetting than having problems conceiving, and a recent study suggests
that women who regularly eat fast food, and not enough fruit, are more likely to struggle. A survey of 5,598 women found that those who enjoyed fast food, four or more times a week, took nearly a month longer to get pregnant, than those who never, or rarely, consumed it. Regular, junk-food
eaters were also less likely to conceive within a year, the report found. Experts said it suggested that a good diet boosted the chances of conceiving. However, there were some limitations to the study, including that it relied on women having to remember what they had eaten before pregnancy. Women in Australia,
New Zealand, the UK and Ireland were quizzed about what they had eaten in the month before they became pregnant with their first child. Midwives visited the women when they were about 14-16 weeks’ pregnant, and asked them how often they ate fruit, green, leafy vegetables and fish, as well as foods such as burgers, pizza, fried chicken and chips, from fast-food outlets. Researchers found that the women who had eaten fruit less than 1-3 times a month took, on average, half a month longer to become pregnant, than those who had eaten it three or more times a day. They also calculate that the women with the lowest intake of fruit had a 12% risk of having been unable to conceive within a year, while this was 16% for those who had eaten
fast food, four or more times a week. This compared with a risk of 8% in the group, as a whole. Couples were excluded from the analysis, if the male partner were receiving fertility treatment. Prof Claire Roberts, from the University of Adelaide, Australia, who led the study, said: “These findings show that eating a good-quality diet, which includes fruit and minimising fast-food consumption, improves fertility, and reduces the time it takes to get pregnant.” However, while researchers found an as-
sociation between the consumption of fruit and fast foods, and the time it took to get pregnant, their study found no link with eating green, leafy vegetables and fish. Although the study was large, it incorporated only a limited range of foods. Information on the fathers’ diets was not collected, and it is possible that other unknown factors might have affected the results, researchers said. But experts said it still added to evidence that women’s diets before pregnancy had an impact on their chances of conceiving. Dr Gino Pecoraro, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland, who was not involved in the research, said: “Generally, the study does support what most health professionals would intuitively believe, that having a healthy diet is good for couples trying to conceive.”

Light your fire at Bombay Babu By Emanuele Pagenstecher - bartender
IF you have been to Bombay Babu, Torviscas, lately, you will have noticed that the team who made eating at an Indian restaurant more of an experience, has done it again by introducing a spectacular range of cocktails, including their own Bombay Bonfire. Bonfire Bonfire; that’s the name of our new, chili concept. It’s a contrast of heat and cool, mixed together with floral and exotic flavours to create the equilibrium, giving our customers a unique experience.
We started the project by infusing some Indian green chili peppers in worldwide-famous vodka. A single shot of this burning spirit will light a fire inside you! Some freshness is demanded to contrast that chili kick, and this is why we shake it with fresh mint leaves. I’ve been inspired by watching my colleagues working in the kitchen, cooking spices, aromas and flavours. As an Italian, I thought that it was crazy to mix ingredients such as chicken breast and mint sauce … until I tried the combination, and discovered it was fantastic. It was brilliant, and such a wonderful idea. Then I opened my mind, and thought: why not create something sweet, chili and fresh, all at the same time? Once I got the opportunity
to do something new and something mine, I decided to go over the limits, to shake unusual ingredients, and to be absolutely mad and out of my mind. The first sip of Bombay Bonfire will explode in your mouth with a wave of hotness, but then the mint starts to cool it down, while the sweetness of guava, and the Maraschino liqueur, cuddles you through your personal experience in Bombay Babu. Bombay Bonfire is now available in our restaurant in Torviscas, as the result of my passion and experience as a bar-tender. My advice is to order the cocktail as your aperitif, because the hotness of Bombay Bonfire wakes up the senses, and sets your mouth towards our Indian Flavours. Lift up your glasses, and leave us your feedback!

Fabulous Ginger flavours By stefania Roberto THIS week, we had the pleasure of dining at one of the hottest and innovative new restaurants, in the heart of Playa de Las Americas. These days, we live in a world in which we have a host of dietary requirements: vegetarian, vegan, glutenfree, allergies etc. But, at last, we have an eatery which caters for all these varieties, under one roof, as well as having plenty of options for traditional meat-and-fish eaters. This is something, many of you will surely agree, we are seriously lacking on this island. We went as a group, so that we could all sample these various options, and we were far from disappointed. Starters included glutenfree garlic bread (available with or without cheese), stuffed rabbit, with crunchy, vegetable stir-fry, or the chef’s speciality: citruscured salmon mousse. For the mains, we opted for the specially-created vegan sweet potato, chickpea, and sultana coconut curry, served on a bed of noodles, and the three-bean chilli served in a Canary squash, which was healthier than the usual jacket-potato option.
Also, we all ordered the steak and Moroccan-spiced vegetable hot wrap. And, to add a touch of extra goodness, we had the Power salad, complete with nutritious ingredients such as quinoa, goji berries, fresh spinach and sugar-snap peas. Dessert, however, was the “pièce de résistance”; a home-made, totally-vegan and gluten-free Eton Mess: light meringue pieces in a berry coulis, and non-dairy “cream”. It’s not yet on the menu, officially, but keep checking,
because it will soon be available. Other sweet-tooth options include lactose-free Alabama Fudge Cake, and gluten-free Carrot Cake. We spent a few minutes speaking with head chef Ashley, to try to extract some of his secrets. He told us he’d had the privilege of training in some of London’s more prestigious, Michelinstar restaurants, under the guidance of many, wellknown chefs. His motto is not to copy recipes, but to create new flavours and combinations,
using only the freshest and highest-quality ingredients. Ashley even has his own, fresh, herb garden at the side of the restaurant, which he will be extending, and adding other varieties. “The right balance of flavours, and a good presentation, is key,” he added.
Ginger also has a range of burgers, fresh salads and jacket potatoes, for those who prefer simple, good food, so, in a nutshell, something for everyone! But, don’t take our word for it; just try it for yourself! Call 631 565 264 to reserve a table.

All whimper, no wham! CD Tenerife 0 Almeria 0
By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife review
TENERIFE’S longsuffering fans are all too familiar with sudden nose-dives in form, but this goal-less draw with relegation-haunted Almeria really put the boot in. True, it wasn’t a fourth straight defeat. And yes, the defence stopped leaking goals. But it was a depressing, soul-less performance that smacked of end-of-term relief coming early. Another poor-quality referee didn’t help their cause, but Tenerife showed little hunger for a win. And they had keeper Dani Hernandez to thank for a superb double save in the final minute, which saved a point. Casadesus headed over from a Luis Perez cross after 10 minutes, but it was downhill all the way from then on. The team pretty much pick themselves these days, because of the club’s longterm injury problems. Their forward line was paper-thin, while the midfield was quiet and lacking ideas. The only attacking
flair came from adventurous runs by full-backs Luis Perez and fit-again Camille. Suso had a couple of early spurts, which lacked sharp finishes, and Alberto looked strangely tame in the tackle. Almeria keeper Rene had an easy afternoon, although his defence exposed him with a poor clearance, late in the first half. And Carlos Ruiz hammered the ball
into his net, only to receive a borderline, offside call. Luis Milla had a shot deflected wide, and there was a hopeful penalty claim for a sliding, defensive tackle on Camille, when the ball hit the tackler’s hand. But these were just brief islands in a sea of boredom, and, surely, it had to get better, didn’t it? Almeria needed something from the game desperately to stay just above the trap
door, and they had a good go at the start of the second half. Marreh had a slow shot covered by Dani, and Fidel smashed his shot high over the bar. Malbasic swapped with Alberto to try to stir Tenerife, and he attempted to squeeze in a shot along the ground, but he wasn’t quick enough. The big striker did better with his build-up for another shot, only to be fouled
by Trujillo. It was a much stronger case for a penalty, but not enough to budge the ref. The arrival of Paco Montañes, for Alex Mula, hardly caused any ripples. He went through the motions, and he wasn’t the only one! Nano, a big, bruising forward, who was Almeria’s best hope, tested Dani twice more, but the home keeper was on his best form. Juan Carlos, given a run-out in place of Suso, with just over 10 minutes left, managing a weak shot before blending in with his teammates. Bryan Acosta had already picked up one booking, and when he upended Pozo, his second yellow card upgraded his punishment to a dismissal. The 11,378 crowd were praying for the final whistle to end their suffering, as Nano burst through and shot at Dani from close range. The keeper got a touch to the ball on one side of him, and twisted back to stop the rebound on the other side. Tenerife are now 11th, and seven points from the promotion play-off spots with four games to go. But hope has run screaming up the street, and there’s a slight edge of despair creeping in as the season grinds to a halt. On Saturday, Tenerife are away to Reus Deportivo, kick-off 7.30pm, with Acosta suspended.

Running News
Making a Hash of it really is a lot of fun! FLOUR-POWER took to the streets and hills of South Tenerife this week, as Hash House Harriers brought their mix of running, walking, and much quenching of thirsts to the island. It’s a grand old tradition of friendship, sport and fun, which was started by colonial officers and ex-pats in Malaysia in 1938. Bob Green played hare for the week, his role being to organise the routes and sprinkle clues, in the form of flour markings, to guide, challenge and regulate the pace of the chase. Oxford and Bicester Hash House Harriers based 18 enthusiasts in Los Cristianos, for a series of hash runs, and related social events. “I got into hashing about 16 years ago after giving up serious running,” said Bob.
“It’s a big social activity, and we have 30 to 40 taking part every week. All ages are involved, and some even bring their dogs.” It’s not a race, and some
CD Marino
Bring on next season! Union Puerto 1 CD Marino 0
MARINO, returning empty-handed from Fuerteventura, faced an uphill battle after losing defender Saavedra in the 20th minute for a second sending-off. Even so, they fought hard and kept Union Puerto at bay until the 84th minute, when Amine sealed the home victory. It has been a steady season for Marino, who have picked
up their fair share of away points. But their form has been inconsistent, which is why they reside in 14th place. The curtain comes down on the Tercera season tomorrow (Saturday) with Marino’s home clash against Las Palmas C, at 4 pm, in Playa de Las Americas. The Las Palmas team had hoped to make the promotion play-offs, but they have slipped in recent weeks and cannot improve on their sixth spot.
marker signs are checks to slow down runners and walkers, so they don’t get too spread out, while other marks nudge them back on to the right track.
The runs are usually between four to seven miles, with several bar stops. The first outing of the Harriers’ week began from their Tenerife Sur base,
through the Apolo Centre, over Chayofita Mountain overlooking the beach, and zig-zagging back, via the Green Clinic, for tapas and sangria at The Devon Arms. Further adventures included a sea trip, and hashes from La Caleta, and over the Guaza Mountain. Hashing is extremely popular in the UK, and Bob has even experienced it throughout the globe. “I’ve hashed over the Golden Gate bridge in California, and the Great Wall Of China,” he said. “Lots of expats are familiar with it, and, back in Oxford and Bicester, we get many tourists joining in the fun.” There’s plenty of background information and advice, on www.ukh3. org.uk and there are also links to clubs in the UK. If anyone in Tenerife wants to start up hash runs, the website will also steer him or her in the right direction. All you need is a love of the outdoors, good company, and a sense of fun.
RIP Mike Bown (London) IT was a sad day for many of us here in South Tenerife, especially those in the Oasis Fm Darts League, when we heard of the sudden passing of one of the island’s good guys.
Mike Bown, affectionately known as London, retired here with his wife, Ann, 10 years ago, after a 40year career as a London cab driver. Hence the nickname. Mike, who settled in the Golf del Sur area, continued his love of golf, and his other passion: darts! And most of those involved in the Darts League will remember him as a top-notch player, who performed with great determination. But he always had a smile, and always took time to talk to everyone. Over those 10 years, he played for Nauta Bar,
Extreme Sports Bar and Phoenix Bar, winning the league with all three. He also won many individual and doubles trophies, with his usual throwing partner, Mitch (pictured with Mike). But what will stick in our minds was his personality and gentle manner, and, at last Monday’s wake, it was said that our Friday darts’ nights will never be the same. He was certainly a gentleman, that’s for sure. At this well-attended gathering, a collection for the Cancer Bus Charity
raised over 400 euros, in London’s memory, for which founder Carol Salisbury is extremely grateful. Ann has written words of thanks for the sympathy and support that she and the family have received at this difficult time. Our dear friend London leaves behind his wife, and daughters Lisa and Lorraine, plus granddaughters Chloe and Katie. And he leaves all of us with memories of a man loved by all of us. Rest In Peace, London.

Granadilla hit the heights
RECORDS keep tumbling for Egatesa Granadilla, who humbled Sevilla, former home keeper Noelia Gil, saving them from a heavier defeat.
Granadilla have now secured fourth spot in the Premier League, already their highest-ever finish. And victory in their final, regular, league fixture at Albacete on Sunday could see Granadilla take the third position. Cristina Martin-Prieto made room for a crisp, early shot for Granadilla, but Noelia denied her with a flying save. Paloma Lazaro was next to test the visitors’ keeper, whose reaction was again top-notch. It was relentless, homeside pressure, and Sara Tui let fly with a free-kick, the same pair of hands dealing with her effort. Granadilla, playing with full confidence, used both flanks to unlock the Sevilla defence. Eva Llamas saw her curling shot finish on the wrong side of the post, and she was equally unlucky when her shot from a Martin-Prieto, head-down, cleared the bar. The breakthrough came from a corner after 24 minutes, and not even the

SOMETIMES good, sometimes bad… the lack of consistency is making Iberostar Tenerife sweat on a place in the end-of-season, play-off competition. They needed to build on their morale-boosting, local derby win at Gran Canaria, but were beaten at Estudiantes. Tenerife’s problem was that they failed to sink their rebound shots. They did well to fight back from a 2819 first-quarter deficit, but, ultimately, let the game slip away. The other quarters went 25-29, 21-19, and 23-25.
the right and sending the ball across the face of the goal. But Pinel, running in, couldn’t get a touch in time. Olivia missed an open goal when Pisco failed to clear
the ball, but Granadilla soon restored their dominance. Paloma nearly doubled the home lead, only to put her wayward header wide, and only a defensive scramble stopped the last home attack of the first half. Pinel opened the second half for Sevilla with a soft header, gathered easily by Pili Gonzalez in the home goal. Patri Gavira was the next to go close for Granadilla, her header from a Pisco cross going just high of the bar. Granadilla, with a view to the upcoming Queen’s Cup, swapped Paloma for Kokito, who was soon hounding Sevilla with her determined runs down the
right, giving them more cause for concern. A double change for Sevilla wasn’t enough to get them into the game because Granadilla, tight and wellorganised in defence, offered their opponents no encouragement. Pisco, Martin-Prieto, and Silvia Doblado all went close, but found Noelia quick to react to their threats. Sub Maria Borres created the best move of the match for Sevilla. She tricked her way down the left wing and looked dangerous, before Maria Estella made a wonderful tackle to halt her. Then, as the match moved into the final five minutes, Noelia made her only mistake. She ran out of her area to stop Martin-Prieto, but the quick-thinking Granadilla forward lobbed the ball over the hapless keeper to secure the win. With that secured, Granadilla gave a senior debut to the B team’s Benchara, who could have made a dream start as she shaped up for a shot. Blanca held her back, and it should have been a penalty. but the ref ignored claims. Even so, it was a comfortable victory for the home side.
Yet the big guns were firing well. Mateusz Ponitka, who top-scored with 18 points, was well supported by Josh Akognon (17), while new addition Tai Odiase made a sound defensive debut. Tenerife are clinging on to the eighth and final play-off spot, with three league games left. But they will have a real battle on their hands when they host third-placed Barcelona on Sunday at 5.30pm. It looks as though American Tim Abromaitis will have to sit this one out after straining his left ankle.
Ryder Cup tees off here! DON’T start trawling the sport’s ticket websites just yet, because this Ryder Cup-style event far from the regular, biennial match between the US and Europe. Instead, it is the proudlycontested Canary Islands v Great Britain clash at Buenavista del Norte, on Tenerife’s north-west coast. Today (Friday) sees the second edition of this clash, as part of the Seve Ballesteros Memorial golf weekend, on the course he designed for a 2003 opening. Each team features 10 pro golfers, who will play each other in singles and doubles to decide this Ryder Cup. The Canaries are led by Luis Claverie, while Mike McCarthy, based at the La Sella course in Denia,
Alicante, captains the GB team. The other BG players are Lee Corfield, Colton Davis, James Ferraby, Jordan Gibb, Andy Marshall, Jamie Mould, Liam Murray, Adam Saagar, and Martin Woodbridge. Last year, this slightly-
less-famous Ryder Cup was played between the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma, and El Hierro) and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote), with Tenerife securing a 10-4 victory.
