Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice

T

he majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to 100,000 euros or £85,000. So far, so good? This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £85,000 or £170,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:

£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax

What is the alternative?

A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.

The returns over the last few years have been:

2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 7.6% 7.5% 10.3% 6.5% 7.8% 7.8% The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

Arona’s unique beach festival Cont. from Front

Ex-husband is facing jail after defying ban GUARDIA Civil officers have arrested a man for breaking a restraining order, imposed on him for several cases of domestic abuse. He has now been sent to prison by a judge, and is awaiting sentencing. A call was made from the victim’s San Miguel de Abona home, where several assaults of abuse and violence had been reported in the past. When the Guardia arrived, the woman told officers that she was receiving threatening messages from her ex-partner, continually, and that she was frightened about what would happen next. The Guardia were already aware of her ex-partner’s history, and of his restraining order. Several hours later, they received another call, saying he had turned up at the home of his exwife’s parents. He was acting excitedly, and trying to get inside the property. The man smashed a sidewindow with the plant pot to gain entry. Once inside, he grabbed some scissors from the kitchen drawer, with which he threatened the ex-wife and her parents. He also told them he would be taking the children with him when he left. When the officers arrived, he ran away, but the Guardia persisted with their search, and found him in Torviscas some days later. He appeared before a judge and was sent to Tenerife 2 Prison, while awaiting his court trial.

Councillor Carmen Lucia Rodríguez del Toro, who runs Adeje Council’s Equality Department said: “We launched this campaign yesterday (Thursday, 17th May), in parallel with the international day against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. “We join with our LGBTI brothers and sisters in the defence of their rights and freedoms, and the right of everyone to be open about his or her sexuality, and gender identity.” The Councillor added: “Our varied programme of activities started at the beginning of May, with consciousness-awareness workshops in secondary schools in the borough.” And throughout the past week, Adeje Health Centre personnel have taken part in a training course on sexual diversity, organised by the Council’s Department of Health. There is also a familyorientated workshop on sexual diversity within families, and a series of self-defence classes for the LGBTI

population in Las Torres pavilion. Yesterday (Thursday), the boroughs forming part of the Tenerife South collective came together to commemorate the internationally-recognised day, and a manifesto was read on the Town Hall steps. And from 10.30 this morning (Friday), there are also talks and workshops for young people on transexuality, looking at the dayto-day realities facing this collective. This event, for second-

Violent rapist also robbed his victim A FOREIGN resident completed an official report to the National Police over last weekend, after being a robberyand-rape victim. The incident happened on the Sunday morning at a Los Cristianos aparthotel, where the woman was staying during her holiday. She said, in a statement to the National Police, that a man entered her apartment through the window, and then punched her several times, before she endured a horrific rape. After the attack, the intruder went through the apartment and helped himself to a small sum of cash and a mobile phone, as well as other bits and pieces. The woman was, subsequently, taken to the emergency department

at Hospital Sur, where she received treatment and was made comfortable. Coincidently, the attack happened close to where another violent robbery took place last month. It was reported that a young male, wearing a baseball cap and sports clothes, approached a disabled Dutch couple, who were about to enter their holiday apartment. A police statement says that the attacker stabbed the 58-yearold Dutch woman in the arm, thigh and stomach, leaving her with serious injuries. Another Dutchwoman, aged 70, called for help and tried to assist the victim. This witness said the attacker got away with a wallet and a mobile phone, then fled toward Calle Londres and Avenida Juan Carlos. Police are continuing their investigations.

Today’s activities finish with a free, theatrical presentation, “Federico & Salvador. Los horas oscuras y dorados”, by Insolaría Teatro. Next Sunday (27th May), there will be an LGBTI Pride parade,

with a stop at the Plaza Pedro Zerolo. The parade will start from Avenida Rafael Puig, through Las Amerícas to Adeje town, then through this town and on to Guía de Isora. On Thursday, 7th June, the “Tardes por ti” programme will host a workshop on orientation and identification, and, finally, on Monday, 18th June, there will be a show-

ing of the XXI film. Meanwhile, Arona Council stages its second, unique, ARN Music Festival, on the Las Americas beach on 2nd-3rd June. There will be special guest appearances, along with international and Spanish artists, visiting Tenerife for this particular party. And it’s all free. The festival celebrates the end of this year’s ARN cultural and Business Pride, which runs from 29th May to 2nd June. Pride events celebrate the ARN’s second anniversary, and, because of its popularity, it has recently been promoted to one of the top-10 international, LGTBIQ events. The week’s events comprise conferences, concerts, art, dance, activism and networking among fashion companies, as well as professionals. In short, it’s a unique fiesta, with a special programme, designed for the local population, as well as tourists from the LGTBIQ.

Car collision is so painful

A MAN aged 30 suffered serious injuries after being run over by a car on Wednesday, on the TF66, in the Arona area.

18th May - 24th May 2018

Not much security for juvenile-centre guard

The incident happened at around 8am, and an ambulance arrived almost immediately. And it soon became apparent to medics that he had severe head injuries. The ambulance crew kept a close eye on the man, because of his injuries, and made him as stable as possible, before transferring him to La Candelaria Hospital.

Flaming heck! My car has caught fire

A YOUNG woman was injured during a traffic accident on Monday afternoon in Los Realejos, which left her car in flames. She was in the LA Guancha area when she lost control of her BMW and came off the road. When the car stopped, she jumped out before the blaze began. And when firefighters arrived at the scene, it had already been put out. Nearby residents, who spotted the flames, raced to the woman’s aid and helped douse them. The 22-year-old driver was taken to the University Hospital and treated for minor injuries. Guardia Civil officers were at the accident scene to divert the traffic, while a roadmaintenance team from Los Realejos cleaned up the area.

A FEMALE security guard, working at the Juvenile Centre in Valle Tabares, La Laguna, has reported an alleged attack to the National Police. She said that a heated conversation with her coordinator spiralled into an assault. The woman made

an additional statement to her USO union, saying she went into the coordinator’s office to collect some papers. Almost immediately, she was involved in a heated conversation with the unit head, before being pushed out of the room, physically. In the process, she said, she had been smacked in

the face. And the force of the blow caused her to bump into a fellow worker, who, fortunately, witnessed the entire episode. The victim, who suffered several injuries, went to the emergency department, and, afterwards, presented herself to the authorities, with whom she lodged an official complaint. Her union has confirmed

that there have been official complaints made about the co-ordinator recently, and work inspectors have been involved on past occasions. They said the unit chief had been fined on other occasions, adding that this was not the first problem they’d had to deal with, involving the co-ordinator and the staff.

Another squeeze for Rajoy

SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, and his ruling People’s Party (PP), would squeeze in again if a General Election were to be called this week. That’s according to data, collected by the Sociological Research Centre (CIS), which predicted that the PP would secure 24% of the votes. Centre-right part Ciudadanos would move into second position, overtaking the Socialists narrowly, with 22.4% to 22% respectively. Antiausterity Podemos would take 19.6%. A previous poll, in February, showed the PP taking 26.3%, Socialists 23.1% Ciudadanos 20.7% and Podemos 19%. The PP currently holds a minority in parliament, following the 2016 General Election, with Spaniards expected to return to voting booths in 2020.

Youngsters tune up for lifeguard duties

FIFTEEN young Adeje swimmers have just completed a training course under the PFAE programme (training in alternate skills), funded by the European Social Fund “Adeje Azul, Adeje Seguro”.

It has taken 11 months, but group members have achieved their goal, being awarded their qualified-lifeguard certificates, which cover swimming pools and open waters. This new programme is directed by Adeje Council, with the European funding, and in conjunction with the Ca-

narian Employment Service. It is designed, specifically, to meet a demand in the sector (young people aged 16-30), and the training was, primarily, in life-saving skills and safety in coastal areas. “We actually have three active programmes in alternative employment training,” said Employment Policies

Cocaine-carriers gave game away A COUPLE arrested at Lanzarote airport, because they were acting suspiciously, were found to be smuggling cocaine. Security officers, as well as the National Police, detected that the woman, 22, along with a 36-yearold man, had just disembarked a Madrid flight and were trying, desperately, to avoid airport officials. The police asked for their

identities, and discovered that the man was set to be charged with the distribution of drugs, as well as trafficking them. The woman was not known to the police, who decided to conduct a body search on both parties. The officers discovered they both had packages taped to them, which, after testing, proved to contain cocaine. The woman was in possession of 437gms, while her companion had 470gms. Both were arrested and charged with drug-trafficking.

Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín. They are: *Prodintur, with a focus on tourism *Limpur Adeje, cleaning and maintenance services *Adeje Azul, Adeje Seguro (Blue Adeje, Safe Adeje) Councillor Méndez Martín added: “The programmes

are aimed at groups of people, who might not have found work, for different reasons, without this additional training. “We have had an excellent success rate in the past, and we believe these kinds of initiatives do meet a number of needs, rapidly, and effectively!”

NEWS IN BRIEF Motorbike crash leaves Fire wrecks ambulances

pillion-passenger dead

SIX ambulances were destroyed, and another eight damaged by fire or smoke, at a depot in southern Spain last Monday morning. The huge blaze, in Algeciras (Cadiz) was reported to the emergency services at 3.50am, and firefighters were quickly on the scene. No injuries were reported, but police are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Woman knifed while parking

A MOROCCAN woman has been charged with stabbing a female driver in the arm as she parked her car, in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. The woman, well-known to the National Police after clocking up some 22 offences in the past, has been placed in custody, awaiting court proceedings. Her victim called police and told them about the incident. While parking up in a side street, she felt a pain in her arm and an abundance of blood, then noticed a middle-aged woman acting nervously, with a knife in her hand. She fled, immediately, while the motorist went to a nearby medical centre and had the wound stitched. Thanks to her detailed description, police found the attacker and charged her for the non-provoked attack.

Car-driver’s huge fall

A FEMALE driver was injured after tumbling some seven metres from a motorway in her car last Monday evening in Gran Canaria. The 45-year-old woman was driving in the Tinoca area of Arucas at around 7pm, when, suddenly, she came off the road and found herself falling down to another one beneath her. An emergency team arrived almost immediately and assisted in rescuing the unfortunate woman, who escaped without serious injury. Even so, she had some pains in her chest and was taken to the Doctor Negrin Hospital for close observation. Guardia Civil officers were also at the scene, as well as the road-maintenance team, directing traffic and cleaning up the roads.

A FEMALE pillion passenger, aged 51, died on Sunday afternoon following a serious motorbike accident on the TF-24.

The tragic incident occurred in the Arafo municipality, on the Cruces de los Loros crossroads.

An emergency call was made just before 4pm, and, because of the unforgiving nature of the accident site, an emergency helicopter was dispatched immediately, with three ambulances also on their way. Sadly, upon arrival, medics could only confirm the woman’s death,

following her injuries. The other person involved in the accident, the 56-year-old bike-rider, needed immediate medical attention because of his considerable injuries. Once stabilised, the biker was transferred by ambulance to La Candelaria Hospital, where he is having further treatment.

Navy rescues exhausted migrant, and surfboard

A MAN with a surfboard, who was attempting to swim to Spain, from Morocco, was picked up by a Navy ship. The 20-year-old, who identified himself as Hamsda Sabar, was picked up by the Mar Caribe auxiliary ship

in the Mediterranean at around 8.20pm last Monday. Naval personnel took the exhausted migrant aboard and gave him food and assistance. He was showing hypothermia symptoms, according to Spain’s Ministry of Defence. The ship transferred the man to Spanish coastguards, who picked

him up half-an-hour later. The Mar Caribe, which patrols Spanish waters, is capable of detecting mines, torpedoes and buoys, as well as carrying out rescue work. The ship was travelling back to its home port in Cadiz province, after taking part in the SpanishMinex 18 naval exercises.

Rambo may head here! Woman, 77, assaulted and robbed by ‘friend’

A PENSIONER, aged 67, has been arrested after being accused by a 77-yearold woman of assault, while snatching her handbag, containing 300 euros. HOT on the heels of Wonder Woman 2 producers coming to film in Tenerife later this year, Sylvester Stallone is hoping to make the Canary Islands the home of sun, sand and sequels, as he plays one-man army John Rambo in Rambo 5.

The 71-year-old actor, who first played the character in 1982, unveiled his new project at this week’s Cannes Film Festival. Which of the Canary Islands is yet to be revealed, but our islands have been named in location plans that also include London and Bulgaria. The 1st September this year is a provisional starting date, and Millennium Media is financing the film. No director has been named,

sparking speculation that Stallone will be behind the camera, as well in front of it. The story involves Rambo struggling by on an Arizona ranch, and trying to deal with his post-traumatic stress disorder. Millennium Media representatives were busy selling the international rights for the film this week at Cannes, and, if all goes well, Rambo will be rampaging across the screen in late 2019.

The incident happened in the exclusive area of Schamann, in the Gran Canaria capital of Las Palmas. It left the old woman in shock, yet she was able to tell the police that she knew the man, and took food to him, regularly. But she had fallen to the ground, after being thumped across the shoulders, and suffered injuries which required hospital treatment. The National Police were informed by a passer-by, who called them to say an elderly woman was lying on the ground, crying, and asking for help. Officers spoke to the woman, and she identified the attacker, who was already known to them. The man, who was soon located, detained and charged with robbery with violence, is now awaiting a court hearing.

Lofty window cleaner

AMAZING pictures of a woman cleaning her windows in Spain, and not just any old windows, have gone viral. The pictures were shared on the Facebook group “things that happen in Cantabria”. The building is reportedly in Santander.

ADEJE department of seniors, under Cllr Cristina Fuente Carballo, have designed “Dejando Huella”, or Leaving Fingerprints, which is a special campaign for the borough’s infant and primary schools. The project is to show today’s children the games of years gone by, in a fun and informative way. “Adeje seniors are always looking for ways to contribute to today’s society in a positive way,” said the Councillor. “And on this occasion, they have used traditional games as a means of connecting with young people, who really did respond enthusiastically, and in a spirit of fun.” There are two facets to “Leaving Fingerprints”, the first being the games themselves, and the second, to look at how children’s

Justice for Spain’s heroic trio of migrant-rescuers THREE Spanish firefighters, arrested on the Greek island of Lesbos in January 2016 for “human trafficking”, have been acquitted of all charges. Manuel Blanco, Julio Latorre and Quique Rodríguez, all from Sevilla, and volunteers with the refugee rescue charity Proem-Aid, were on their third mission of saving migrants’ lives in the Mediterranean, when they were arrested at the port, along with two members of the Danish NGO Team Humanity. They had no refugees on board at the time, as they had answered a false alarm, but they were facing 10 years each in jail for every migrant they had rescued. Blanco said ahead of the trial that theirs was not just a hearing for the five charity workers, but for the entire aid volunteering network. “These organisations fill a gap in refugee assistance, that governments do not,” he said. Without them, Blanco said, tens of thousands of desperate migrants fleeing

war, political persecution and poverty, would die at sea, trying to reach safety. After the trial, at the island’s capital town of Mitilene, the firefighters celebrated their news. “Without a doubt, this is a huge victory for humanitarian aid,” wrote Proem-Aid, on social media. “We’ll go back and save even more lives! Justice has been done. Manuel, Julio and Quique have been acquitted of all charges.”

Danish volunteers Mo Abassi and Salam Aldeem were also let off. Numerous Spanish film and TV actors had backed their cause, and Spain’s Interior Ministry and Foreign Office had pledged their full support. “This verdict shows that saving lives is not a crime,” said Blanco. “A judge has now said so, and this carries much wider implications. “I feel as though a two-ton slab had been lifted from

my shoulders. It’s like an explosion of happiness.” The three firefighters used up all their annual leave from their day jobs to work in the Greek islands, rescuing refugees. And their lawyer in Athens called them “an example”. Jaris Petsikos, defending, revealed: “Residents, who were sitting comfortably on their sofas, opened up their homes and offered help and shelter to rescued migrants.”

Callous dog killer is facing jail term A HEARTLESS man from Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas is facing a maximum prison sentence of 18 months when he goes for trial, after the dastardly killing of his wife’s dog in their washing machine. And to make sure the poor animal did die, agonisingly, the beast put the machine on the spin cycle, causing several injuries to the little animal, who drowned. The events happened last July, when the accused wife returned home from visiting her parents and found her pet Yorkshire terrier lifeless, inside the machine. Apart from the possible maximum sentence, for such a hideous crime, 61-year-old Florecio BG, who appeared at the local court, will not be able to work with animals, or have any involvement with them, for four years.

Catalonia’s President squeezes into hot seat

Youngsters flock to join the powerful drug gangs A SPANISH police union warned last Monday that young people in the country’s poorer South were flocking to work for drug gangs, who are becoming more and more powerful in an area where security forces are now reluctant to be posted. The stark warning came two days after around 40 people, some thought to be linked to drug mafias, and armed with bottles and clubs, attacked a ninestrong group of Guardia Civil officers. They were off-duty and had enjoyed a meal in Algeciras, part of the southern province of Cadiz, which is a drug-trafficking hotspot. “Before, the mafias avoided us, but this new generation of narcos are challenging security forces directly,”

said Alberto Moya, head of the AUGC Guardia Civil union. He also told Spanish radio that they use guns, and had professionals, saying: “We’re now noting the presence of hitmen (sicarios).” Moya added: “These people employ legions of youth,” pointing to the high unemployment rate in this poorer area of southern Spain as one of the reasons. “These people can pay salaries that not even a

multi-national could pay its executives.” He is aware that many police officers do not want to be posted in the area “because their work is difficult, they can be recognised, and they fear for their families”. According to the Interior Ministry, 40% of all drugs that come to Spain arrive via the province of Cadiz, so you can’t really blame police officers for wanting to swerve past the area. This is not the first incident

in an area where traffickers have also unloaded drugs in broad daylight, recently, and stormed a hospital, successfully, to free a suspected drug-trafficker. But Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido sought to play down Saturday’s incident, in which one of the nine police officers, following their meal, was forced to fire his gun in the air to stop the attack. It was “an act of vandalism, of street violence that doesn’t have anything to do with other issues,” Zoido told reporters, seemingly denying that there was a link with drug-trafficking. He added that of the 10 attackers already identified by police, just two had previous convictions linked with drug-trafficking. And at least one of them had already been detained. Zoido insisted that more police had been sent to the area, but agreed that social measures were also needed, such as fighting youth unemployment.

QUIM TORRA has assumed the role of Catalonia President after edging in, winning a ballot in the region’s Parliament by just one vote. Torra, the separatist Junts per Catalunya (JxCat) party’s favoured candidate, won with a total of 66 votes from that party, and from the pro-independence Republican Left of Cataluña (ERC). The far-left Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) party abstained. One of his first acts as President took place this week when Torra travelled to Berlin for a joint press conference with controversial predecessor Carles Puigdemont. At a session of the legislature, held to invest him, the new President said his government would work in the interests of all Catalans.

In-house training on the children’s rights ADEJE Council’s department of special welfare and attention to diversity and children, organised a series of training events to coincide with Tuesday’s International Day of the Family. The event was held, in conjunction with the Cabildo Infants and Family unit, together with the Asociación Mundo Nuevo. The training was for the personnel of different departments, who have regular contact with families. Isabel Fernández González, Councillor with responsibility for the area, said:

“This kind of ‘refreshment’ training and sharing experiences is an enriching practice, underlining the Council’s commitment to proper treatment of our citizens. “We know that the Council’s staff is involved in this move, to improve the service, and, thanks to the teams we have in place, we are able to attend to the needs of the borough’s many families.” Psychologist Jesús Eloy Gaspar Pérez was invited to lead the training, using various activities, and participants debated about how families are treated. They also looked at how, too often today, with children and adults, we do not use phrases like “please” and “thank-you”.

He asked people to consider a number of questions, such as: “What does ‘treatment’ mean,”, and “what do I think is good?” The workshop identified five “needs” in the protocol to evaluate the protection of the child: social, emotional, cognitive, safety and physical. This, he said, would ensure that a child’s development is harmonious. At the same time, he stressed that there were many different kinds of families, so the needs of a child must be assessed within that acceptance. The training sessions were also an important reinforcement of the way different departments work, in conjunction with one another.

Drive-by shooting was result of a drugs debt

David Avila, between two pals

POLICE believe the brutal Marbella drive-by shooting last Saturday, outside a church, was the work of a Colombian drug cartel. According to El Mundo, 36-year-old David Avila was shot five times in front of his family for failing to pay back a debt, after becoming a Costa del Sol cocaineand-hashish king. The businessman, who owned Heaven Beach Club and a gym, was shot three times in the head, once in the chest and once in the shoulder. He was murdered as his wife and daughter sat in the passenger seat of the Audi A3, while his son was in the back. They had just left the daughter’s First Holy Communion ceremony, at the Virgin del Rocio church in San Pedro de Alcantara. Investigators say the killer could have assassinated Avila before the ceremony because he arrived late. But they believe the cartel wanted to send a message to others who fail to repay debts. But the message could be intended, specifically, for other members of Avila’s network, a police source told El Mundo. “They may

go after more of them.” The murder comes a month after two of Avila’s alleged gang members were killed in Dubai, while taking part in a Ferrari race. The pair crashed after accelerating too hard and died on the spot, but investigators are now giving the incident another look. “It is clear that everything is related,” said a police spokesman. The last few months also saw Avila’s beach bar and gym burned to the ground, which amounted to more messages and warnings from the Colombians, say police. Avila, or “Maradona” as he was called, sarcastically, because of his poor football skills while playing in the Unión Deportiva San Pedro, had a history of drugs, and had also spent time in prison. And, in addition to being on probation at the time of his killing, he was being investigated in Argentina for money-laundering. He lived in an apartment in Benahavis, a Spanish mountain village, seven miles from the coast, and police believe his debt with the Colombians could stretch into the millions.

Captured Brit has so many dodgy IDs SPAIN sold military equipment worth 4.3bn euros last year, which has set a record income figure for these transactions. It is a 7.3% increase on 2016 and the second year in a row the country has broken its own record, the EU accounting for 72.6% of the exports. A report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, shows Spain to be the seventhlargest exporter of weapons in 2017. Outside the bloc, the country’s biggest client

was Saudi Arabia, with 270.2m euros in sales, an enormous 133% rise from 2016. The Spanish Government blocked four sales last year, including two worth 1.9m euros, meant for Israel. Sales to China and another to Myanmar were also blocked. Germany was Spain’s top client, purchasing weapons worth 1.2m, and other major clients were Britain, France and Turkey. The bulk of all sales were aircraft, assembled at a Sevilla plant, which accounted for 79% of Spain’s military exports. Saudi Arabia topped Egypt as Spain’s No.1, non-EU client, last year,

spending 270.2m on a carrier aircraft, unmanned aircraft, replacement parts and mortar shells, as well as plenty more. The weapons will probably be used for Saudi Arabia’s assault in Yemen. Since its operation began there in 2015, orders of Spanish weapons have almost tripled, from 34.7m euros in 2016, to last year’s 90.1m. The Middle-Eastern power has been accused of crimes against humanity in the war. And Amnesty International, Oxfam Intermon and Greenpeace all complain that there is not enough monitoring of how the purchased weapons are used.

A BRITON, on the run for armed robbery, and known to have at least 75 false identities, has been held on the Costa del Sol. The unnamed suspect was detained in Marbella on a European Arrest Warrant after being stopped by a Spanish National Police patrol just after 2am. And when he handed over his fake identification, it soon became clear that he was being hunted by UK investigators. He had been accused of raiding a

series of armoured vehicles, plus possession of illegal weapons and explosives, before vanishing. The fugitive was cuffed and charged with presenting false documents on the spot. He was said to have offered 500 euros to the officers if they let him go, which resulted in an additional bribery rap. A judge in Madrid ordered, via video conference, that he be remanded in custody, ahead of extradition proceedings.

Seatbelt problem hits some Spanish models

MORE than 400,000 owners of Spain’s Seat’s Ibiza and Arona models, along with Volkswagen Polo cars, have been notified of a mass recall, after seatbelt defects were detected. The Seat Arona and the Ibiza, produced by the Martorell (Barcelona province) plan, and the 2018 VW Polo, manufactured at the Landaben plant, in the Navarra region, have faulty left-hand, back-seat belts. These do not fasten properly, and owners have been advised to take the cars back to their nearest dealer for checks. “There is a possibility that, in certain situations, for example, a sudden lane change when the vehicle is occupied by five people, and only when the back seats on the left and in the middle are occupied at the same time, the left-hand side seatbelt may come undone, unintentionally,” Seat says in its letter to affected owners. But the company has assured drivers that the new Ibiza and Arona are “quality-controlled and completely safe to drive”, stressing that the recall was, purely, in relation to the left-rear seatbelt. Until the car has been reviewed and a new seatbelt fitted, the company recommends that the middle seat in the rear not be used, since this seems to be the trigger for the left-hand seatbelt coming undone under pressure. All reviews of the rogue seatbelt will be free of charge, as will the fitting of a new one. Seat is the Spanish arm of the German make Volkswagen, which is why both brands have been recalled. In total, 219,000 Polos and 191,000 Ibizas and Aronas are believed to have problems with their rear seatbelts.

Riddle of Picasso’s ‘damaged’ portrait A PICASSO self-portrait, worth an estimated 60 million euros, was withdrawn from a New York auction on Tuesday after it was said to have been “accidentally damaged”.

Malaga-born Pablo Picasso painted his Le Marin (The Sailor) in 1943, and auctioneers Christie’s said: “The painting has been withdrawn from the sale, to allow the restoration process to begin.” A spokesman added: “The damage happened last Friday, during the final stages of preparation,” but he did not specify exactly what the damage was. According to US media, the painting is owned by former casino magnate Steve Wynn. Last week, a Picasso portrait of a naked, pre-pubescent girl was sold for 115 million dollars (97m euros) at a Christie’s auction. “Fillette a la corbeille fleurie” features a nude

girl, holding flowers before a blue background, which sparked a controversy over the artist’s sexual depiction of a young girl, in the current #MeToo atmosphere. According to Christie’s auction-house catalogue, “As it would have been clearly understood at that

time, the flowers were a come-on. She was actually a prostitute.” Picasso biographer John Richardson added that the painting’s subject was a girl named Linda, who “sold her body, as well as her roses, outside the Moulin Rouge.”

Thomas Cook might wave goodbye to its sexy-sun Club 18-30 THOMAS Cook’s Club 18-30, a brand known for cheap holidays full of sun, sex and ridiculous amounts of alcohol, could soon be confined to the company’s history. The Club, specialising in trips to Malia, Ayia Napa or Mallorca’s Magaluf, has the fitting slogan: “It’s go big or go home, and only the legendary will do”. At its peak, the firm transported around 100,000 people abroad every year, even generating a cult TV series. Yet today’s youngsters favour holidays that show them in a better light on social media, and they’re no longer seeking those passed-out-drunk looks in snaps, or public, sexy couplings. The popular holiday company, said to be considering whether it should sell the brand after owning it for 20 years, is “exploring options”. Thomas Cook, one of the leading high-street tour operators, is reacting to a change in the type of break young people are now after, with most wanting a holiday good enough to share on such sites as Instagram. More than half of the 1825 age bracket believe social media plays a factor when picking a hotel, said a report published by the

Women’s crash injuries

tour operator earlier this month. They call it “ego travel”. Should Club 18-30 close, it would put an end to more than 50 years of the organisation, which started in 1965, when 580 youngsters were taken to Spain’s Costa Brava. The brand, which grew during the 1980s, was the first overseas holiday for many teenagers without their parents. By 2001, it boasted its own television show, ITV’s Club Reps, which saw groups of 18-30 reps showing holidaymakers around popular destinations. Thomas Cook tried to keep Club 18-30 afloat in recent years by turning its back

on salacious advertising campaigns, including slogans such as “Summer of 69”. The move was made after five of its holiday reps quit, following allegations that they took part in “live sex acts” in the Corfu resort of Kavos. But despite attempts to sort out its image, the Thomas Cook party continues, with Club 18-30’s website promising to be “what the summer is all about”… “no ties, no responsibilities”. However, the holiday firm feels this is no longer what millennials desire, and plans to focus its attention on its own-brand hotels. Cook’s Club, designed to

include better food, music from popular DJs and upmarket cocktails, is the answer. Remo Masala, Thomas Cook’s creative director, said: “It’s our opportunity to demonstrate that we leading the way, by bringing a sense of urban cool to the beach.” The Times newspaper reports that the travel company is believed to be on the look-out for a Club 18-30 buyer. The company said this week: “We remain committed to Club 18-30 for summer 2018. However, we are exploring options for the future of the brand, which could include the possibility of a sale.”

TWO women were injured after a motorway accident in their car, along the TF-1 on Sunday morning in the Granadilla area. A call was made to the Canarian Emergency services requesting an ambulance, and the police, together with a medical team, were dispatched to the scene rapidly. When they arrived, the two women had already climbed out of the upside-down car. Both women, apart from being in shock, suffered injuries, one to the head and face, while her companion had moderate burns. They were transferred to Hospiten Sur by ambulance, and were under observation this week. The Guardia Civil were on the scene to direct the traffic, because of the large jams which built up.

Motorway scam is such an easy touch TOURISTS have been warned of a rental-car scam, aimed at fooling carhire people in Spain. Motorists on the AP-7 motorway are, reportedly, being targeted by thieves, who flag them down after claiming to have spotted a flat tyre. The drivers are signalled to pull over, before having their belongings stolen while they’re distracted. American tourist Kelly Roland said: “We were driving back from Cadeques to Barcelona when a midsize BMW, with a few guys in it, pulled up next to us on the highway.” She said that a man in the front passenger seat was pointing at her front tyre, and indicating a service station ahead. After she stopped, her friend got out to look and the man came over “speaking loudly in broken English” before Kelly joined them. “All three of us are looking at the passenger-side tyre, and you can see there’s nothing wrong with it,” she said. “Later, I realised he had been talking loud, so we didn’t hear the doors opening and closing.” She added that one of the man’s companions had sneaked over and removed their bags, while they were distracted. When she reported the incident to police, she was told that they had seen the ploy “one, two, maybe 3,000 times before”. Other criminals are less subtle, simply smashing the windows of rental cars before making off with whatever they could lay their hands on. Police recommend that holiday-makers remove rental stickers or signage from cars, regardless of whether the companies themselves approve. And they should also keep all valuables out of sight, locking bags and other items in the boot, if leaving the vehicle unattended.

It’s okay to burn the King’s photo A JUDGE has dropped proceedings against a woman, said to have burned a picture of Spain’s King Felipe. The decision follows a separate ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which classed such acts as free expression. Jose de la Mata, a judge presiding in Spain’s National Court, wrote in a report to police that the burning was a “symbolic” rejection of the monarchy. The judge added that the act did not incite hatred or violence, which could have made the woman liable for prosecution. That’s because insulting the crown is a criminal offence under Spanish law, as is hate speech. The ruling concerned the woman’s alleged burning of a photograph of the King, at a protest in Banyoles, Girona. The demonstration followed the ECHR’s decision to cancel 15-month prison sentences for two Catalan defendants, accused of insulting the Spanish crown. The Strasbourg court also ordered Spanish authorities to compensate the protestors. The decision of

Madrid’s National Court to call off efforts to prosecute the woman for the Banyoles burning, followed on 13th March. Judge de la Mata cited the ECHR’s ruling in his report to police. He wrote that the burning of the photo was simply a criticism of the Spanish state, which is what the King represented. He added that the woman had levelled political criticism at the crown over the treatment of the two

Catalan defendants, and, more generally, over Spain’s handling of Catalonia’s independence push. “The ECHR recalls that freedom of expression is valid, not only for information or ideas that are favourably received, or considered harmless, but also for those that hurt or offend,” said his report. “Pluralism and tolerance are required. Without these, there is no democratic society.” The court’s

decision follows Spain’s wrestling over its “monarchy insult” laws. Madrid’s Congress of Deputies debated scrapping the legislation in March, following proposals from a Catalan leftist party in the Spanish Parliament. Valtonyc, a Mallorca rapper, was sentenced to 3½ years in prison for slandering the monarchy in his songs, among other things, but he has yet to be put behind bars.

Sacked pastry-scoffer is exonerated in court AN EMPLOYEE, who was fired for “stealing” and eating a savoury pasty at work in Spain, has been told by a court that she should have her job back, or be compensated! The company she worked for recorded the empanadascoffing incident on a surveillance camera, which was submitted to the court as evidence. But a judge in Cordoba

said the evidence was inadmissible, after the European Court of Human Rights condemned Spain for taking such evidence, without the consent of the workers. The woman had worked at the same shopping centre for 12 years, but, on 22nd November last year, she received a letter of dismissal for “an absolutely fraudulent and disloyal performance”. Now, though, the judge has ordered the company to re-employ the woman, or compensate her with 19,000 euros.

Facebook ‘fake news’ centre for Barcelona FACEBOOK has opened an operations centre in Barcelona, dedicated to combating “fake news”. The Silicon Valley outpost, operating in the Glòries Tower, is the result of a deal with the Competence Call Centre (CCC) company, which has just signed a contract to rent eight storeys of the famous skyscraper. The Facebook hub will fight against misleading headlines, often generated by false profiles or by radical groups, in the same way as the Content Control office in Germany, which employs 500 workers. Barcelona’s centre will be only the second of its type in Europe. But it is not yet known how many jobs the “fake news” office will create, or whether some of its employees will be existing Facebook staff, relocating from the US. The Glòries Tower, based in the city centre’s Les Glòries square, is an iconic, glass-and-chrome skyscraper, standing 142 metres,

which makes it Barcelona’s thirdtallest building. It was designed by acclaimed architect Jean Nouvel, and was known, originally, as the Agbar Tower, home to the city’s water board. The tower’s location is right in the heart of the so-called “technology belt” in Spain’s second-largest metropolitan area, which has become known as the ‘@22’ in recent years.

Fake driving licences not worth the trouble

A spoof licence that put a smile on one policeman’s face in London

IT is well-documented that the Spanish Costas’ rich variety of foreign residents increases the complexity of legal issues. And fake driving licences is one of them. Some months back, it was recorded that a US national was fined 500 euros for carrying a “bogus” international driving licence. He had a lucky escape, considering that a middle-eastern businessman is facing a spell in prison for using an “International Driver’s Licence”, issued by an entity named as International Automobile Alliance (IAA), based, apparently, in New York. According to the State Prosecutor’s writ of accusation, the licence was deemed “fake in its entirety, having a photograph affixed by the owner or a third person”. And, based on those findings, the Prosecutor requested that the Court sentence the alleged offender to a minimum 19 months in prison, for forging a public document, plus an additional criminal fine of 12 euros per day for a period of 18 months.

But that applies only if the offender is unable to show evidence that he has a valid driver’s licence from another country. It now seems as though only US, officially-approved “AAA” and “AATA” associations, can issue such international licences. The are tens of online “businesses” selling fake driving licences, along with passports and IDs. One advertises its business offer as having years of experience, producing original quality real/false passports and IDs. Alongside these obviously-clandestine operators, there is a second tier of businesses. These appear to have specific Government-official approval, and say they can issue valid international driving licences, pursuant to Annex 9 of the Geneva Convention, and Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention. International drivers’ licences are generally issued by officiallyrecognised agencies only, to drivers who already have a valid licence from the country. And the agencies issuing them MUST be approved by the specific Government authority.

He made the children believe they had evil spirits inside them A FATHER was set to go on trial in Barcelona yesterday (Thursday), accused of raping his teenage daughter and her two friends “to rid them of evil spirits”. The man, identified only as Javier GD, is accused of raping his 15-year-old daughter, and two of her friends, repeatedly, over a 15-month period, at the family home in Baix Llobregat, near Barcelona. He told the girls, it is alleged, that he belonged to a religious cult, and was empowered to drive out evil spirits. “He told his victims that he belonged to the Order of Odin, and made them believe that they had evil spirits inside them,” states the public prosecutors’ file, “and the only way to drive them out was to perform sexual rituals.” It added: “He told them that if they did not agree to perform sexual rituals, their families would be in danger, and bad things would happen.” He even told one of the girls: “If you don’t do it, then your little sister will die.” Prosecutors are asking for a 45-year jail sentence for three crimes of rape.

Father faces 45-year sentence for raping daughter and 2 pals

His wife is also on trial as an accomplice, because prosecutors say she knew about the abuse, and let it happen! She was in the house during the rapes, allegedly, and even asked the girls once: “How was it?” Prosecutors are calling for a nine-year jail sentence for the woman, for collusion.

The trial comes weeks after a high-profile case, which saw five men acquitted of rape for an attack on a young woman, during the San Fermin Running of the Bulls fiesta in Pamplona. The men, who called themselves “La Manada” or Wolf Pack in English, were jailed for nine years each on a lesser charge of sexual

abuse, after the panel of judges found the attack did not involve violence or intimidation. The verdict has proved hugely controversial, leading to mammoth street protests across the country. It also sparked a #Cuentalo movement of women, sharing their stories of abuse and rape, publicly.

Youngster dies after thugs ram his vessel A CHILD died on Monday afternoon after the pleasure boat he was sitting in was rammed by a vessel, similar to those used by drug-trafficking gangs in the south of Spain. Witnesses described seeing the high-powered boat “performing dangerous manoeuvres” off the Getares beach in Algeciras (Cadiz). They said there appeared to be an altercation between the boy’s father and two people on the other boat, before the pleasure craft was rammed. The child, believed to be around nine, died immediately, while his injured father received medical attention. Sources said that the two people onboard the semi-rigid boat were detained by beachgoers, before police arrived. Guardia Civil officers, and the National Police, are investigating the fatality.

TODAY'S climate presents many challenges to both preserving your wealth, and seeing it grow over time. Alongside economic uncertainty surrounding Brexit, we have endured years of ultra-low interest rates, and an ever-changing tax and regulatory landscape. All this makes it harder for investors to achieve returns that are not eroded by inflation and taxation. At times like this, careful planning plays a particularlyimportant role in securing your financial security, over the long term. Here are six, key tips that can help. Establish a suitable strategy When it comes to investing, one size definitely does not fit all. What will suit you depends on your specific objectives, time-frame and attitude to risk. Your portfolio should be created and managed to meet your particular set of circumstances and goals. Understand your appetite for risk Before investing, establish By Nick Hubble (Financial advisor) THE lira is coming back, but, following two months of silence from Italy’s coalition negotiations, it’s all happening rapidly. Remember, politics is Italy’s only way out of the euro. That currency, and its monetary policy, has kept one of the world’s major economies in the doldrums since its inception. Its GDP has barely grown since Italy joined the EU, and the country has experienced five recessions in that period. But the people are fighting back. Three eurosceptic, political parties rose to prominence by rejecting the euro and the EU’s rules. They have since softened their stance on Europe, to simply rejecting the EU’s budget rules. But the antieuro sentiment is still in the electorate. Now, though, Italy’s Five Star Movement and Lega have struck a deal to form a government together. And the consequences for the EU, the euro and debt markets could not be bigger. If you want to be prepared for the coming crisis, it is crucial to keep an eye on Italian politics, and I will attempt to give a coherent

Protecting and growing your wealth the right balance of risk and return for your peace of mind. Different investment assets represent varying levels of risk, from cash and fixedincome assets (government and corporate bonds), to equities and “real assets”, like property. It is extremely difficult to effectively assess your own tolerance for risk. Instead, speak to an experienced adviser, who can ask the right questions and use appropriate tools, to create a clear and objective risk profile for you. They can then recommend an appropriate blend of investments to match your profile. Remember: without some element of risk, you may struggle to outpace inflation and could lose money, especially with longerterm bank deposits, and today's low interest rates. An adviser can present options to help control risk within your defined

boundaries, for example, staggering the timing of investments in riskier assets, to reduce exposure to market movements. Identify your timeline for investing The longer you have to invest, the more risk you can generally afford to take. With time, you can ride out market volatility, and benefit from compound returns. Understanding your time horizon is also the key to ensuring your investments offer the right level of “liquidity”. Insist on diversification The higher your concentration in one particular investment type or area, including the UK, the higher the risk. Spreading out investments across asset classes, regions and market sectors, limits exposure to any one area. Incorporate effective tax planning To help maximise real

returns and protect your wealth for future generations, factor in tax planning when setting up your portfolio. Look for arrangements that can shelter capital from tax, while providing a taxefficient income, enabling you to transfer wealth to your beneficiaries, with minimal bureaucracy and inheritance taxes. For expatriates, this is complicated by having to work with the rules of more than one country. An adviser with cross-border expertise can ensure you meet your tax liabilities, in Spain and in the UK, while taking advantage of available opportunities. Regularly review your strategy Good financial planning is not a “set and forget” exercise. Your circumstances, aims and requirements usually change over time. You should review your portfolio, around once a year, to keep it on track.

Return of Lira in Italy could finish the euro

understanding of what is a confusing mess. Italy’s new government The compromise set of policies between the farleft and centre-right is full of dramatic changes to the status quo. The new government will probably launch its own, parallel currency, to compete with the euro. It will trash what’s left of Italy’s fiscal ruins completely, and become a major pain in the neck for the EU. That’s the summary, anyway.

It is very much in line with my prediction about what will happen to Europe in coming months. One stepping stone towards the crisis was provided by former Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi, who, despite a fraud conviction and sex scandal some years ago, will be allowed to stand for a political office again, thanks to an Italian court ruling. The 81-year-old former leader has one last political victory in sight, with his Forza Italia party, and he endorsed the other two major parties to form a government last week. These are the left-wing Five Star Movement and the fairly far right-wing Lega, who have announced a deal. The left-right mantra is proven false because these parties could form a coherent set of policies. But they are merely promising dramatic change. There isn’t much traditional

coherence in their positions, and it’s a real hotchpotch of ideas, some of which I even like. Berlusconi’s endorsement was crucial, because his party had expected to form a government with Lega, in a coalition deal made before the election. But they failed to get enough votes, even together. Lega, more or less, needed Berlusconi’s permission to leave the alliance and join up with Five Star, and this new coalition between that party and Lega is expected to throw up an odd set of policies: *The Prime Minister will be a neutral arbitrator between the two parties’ leaders *Pension reforms will be stopped, putting Italy back on to a disastrous, fiscal path, instead of just a bad one *A flat tax on companies and people will mean a

The key to bringing all these guidelines together is ensuring you take personalised, expert advice from a regulated adviser. Whether you are looking at investments, tax planning, estate planning or your pension, it is crucial that your approach is appropriate for you. With the right strategy in place for your life in the Canary Isles, you can protect and grow your wealth, in real terms, not only during your lifetime, but for the next generations to enjoy. All advice received from Blevins Franks is personalised and provided in writing. This article, however, should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation or investment advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www. blevinsfranks.com huge tax cut, costing tens of billions of euros a year *A type of universal income will launch, to ensure minimum living standards *EU fiscal rules will be renegotiated, to allow Italy to stimulate its economy with deficit spending *Immigration cuts *Pushing for a pro-Russia agenda in the EU *And, most importantly, the country will explore launching a parallel currency. Most of those policies only worsen Italy’s fiscal decline. Some are all about sticking it to the EU. Italians see the immigration debacle as Angela Merkel’s fault for her open-door policy. Now they’ve had their say by putting the German leader in her place. But the parallel currency the key. This is, essentially, the first step to leaving the euro. It’s still well disguised, but that’s what it is. If the Italians pull this off, there’ll be no reason to keep the euro. Other nations will follow Italy, and if a big chunk of the eurozone isn’t using the euro, it will be defunct. And a defunct currency is worthless. Which will make debt markets denominated in euro panic.

Home From Home BBC1, 21.30

In Home From Home, Johnny Vegas stars as Neil Hackett who, alongside wife Fiona (Niky Wardley), has finally achieved a long-cherished dream of buying a lodge in the Lake District. Their traditional lodge at Lake View Holiday Park means everything to them, the years of scrimping and saving now feel worth it. That is until they wake up the next morning and meet their neighbours, the effortlessly superior Dillons, outdoorsy Robert (Adam James, Doctor Foster) and glamorous Penny (Emilia Fox, Silent Witness). Strictly Come Dancing favourite Susan Calman and musical theatre legend Elaine Paige – who is almost unrecognisable as Neil’s fun-loving mum, Mercy Hackett – also appear in the series. Little Neil reveals he has a huge homework project to do and Neil is even more put out when Robert lends a hand.

Countdown To The Full Motty BBC2, 22.05

TV Guide

Match of the Day’s Gary Lineker introduces a special countdown of some of John Motson’s greatest football commentaries from over 50 years as a broadcaster. A rare chance to indulge in commentary from classic matches with contributions from some of the biggest names in football, and of course from the man himself. No programme on Motty would be complete without some of his funnier moments, such as his famous report from Wycombe Wanderers in the snow wearing his beloved sheepskin coat

Dad of two Terry is hoping to learn to sing so he can perform at his best friend’s wedding. Fourth contestant Chris is hoping the musical genes that run in his family are somewhere in him – he just needs to find them. Manchester: The Night Of The Bomb e c i o h BBC2, 21.00 c

This 60 minute documentary by AMOS Pictures is a powerfully dramatic retelling of the 2017 terrorist attack for BBC Two. On May 22 2017 a Manchester-born man detonated a homemade bomb at an Ariana Grande pop concert, killing twenty-two people and himself. It was Britain’s deadliest terrorist attack since 7/7. The documentary tells the story of that night in forensic detail, through the eyes of teenage girls who survived the attack, witnesses and key members of the emergency services. It features unseen mobile phone video and unheard audio recordings and has exclusive access to the emergency services. The film also explores the identity and motives of the suicide bomber. Featuring interviews with counter-terrorism police and his friends from South Manchester, the film sheds light on what may have led Salman Abedi, a 22-year-old Manchester boy of Libyan parentage, to target a group of children attending a concert celebrating the independence and empowerment of young women.

Sex couple’s clinic opened police eyes

31 CW

Scotland’s booze loses its sparkle

A COUPLE from Barcelona, who moved to Ireland and set up a sex clinic at their home, charged clients 200 euros per hour, until the police stepped in.

Spaniard David Navaro, 50, and his Brazilian wife Celia Galan, 41, moved to Ennis, County Clare, in 2015. The couple (pictured), were detained in the wake of a covert, surveillance operation by Gardai (Irish police) investigators, amid suspicions that they were running a brothel. Ennis District Court heard that the pair were making around 1,200 euros a week after advertising themselves on the Escort Ireland website as “Ann and Peter”. A raid on the property revealed a laptop with the saved advert, a phone and a notebook with clients’ details, which were seized, said Inspector Tom Kennedy. The advert read: “Ann is a woman of 30 years, with a pretty face, and Peter is a man of 38 years, with a slender body, and both

are eager to please you. “We receive men, women and couples. You will enjoy the best experience of your life, and we’re sure you will come back.” Insp. Kennedy confirmed that the couple, who did not work individually, would charge 200 euros hourly for sex, 170 euros for 45 minutes, or 130 euros for half-an-hour. He added: “Their response to the Guardai was that they didn’t think there was anything wrong with what they were doing, and that it wasn’t illegal. “The entire operation was conducted by both of them. It was a joint enterprise. They were both participating in it willingly and with each other, and it was advertised in that format.”

Daragh Hassett, defending, called the racy venture a “cottage industry,” and said that when the pair were charged, “they were, effectively, run out of the property and out of Ennis”. He added: “This is rampant in Spain and regularised there, and is not something that breaches the law there.” The pair, who have no previous convictions, now live in eastern Ireland and work in a factory for 400 euros a week, after co-operating fully with the police, and pleading guilty to prostitution charges, said their solicitor. Judge Patrick Durcan fined each of them 600 euros, saying: “This activity is against the law, and the court doesn’t approve of this type of activity.”

SCOTLAND has introduced a minimum price for alcohol, sparking warnings that people will flock south of the border on “booze cruises” to save money.

The price of spirits, beer and cider have been increased to to 50p per unit, in a bid to tackle the country’s health crisis. But shops near the border have been stocking up on extra alcohol, and launching offers, in anticipation of a surge in de-

mand. There are also fears that bootleggers will try to take advantage of the law by selling their illegal, and potentially dangerous, alcohol. Scotland is the first country anywhere to adopt the drastic measure, which will push up the price of the cheapest two-litre bottle of cider from £1.99 to £5. But the cost of Buckfast, a fruity, fortified wine, which became synonymous with loutish behaviour in Scotland, will stay the same at £5.63. That’s because this is already more expensive than the minimum unit price.

Wealthy Rolls Royce driver fined peanuts for costly shop crash A BRITISH man has been fined just 500 euros after crashing his 300,000-euro convertible Rolls Royce into a Mallorcan shop window. Police hunted the playboy millionaire, who wrecked his supercar, while two women dressed in bikinis danced on the back seat. Jody Sanders, selfconfessed “maverick tycoon”, reversed the luxury car through the front window of a tobacconist shop in Portal Nous, Calvia. The 39-year-old prop-

erty magnate claimed, in the wake of the smash, that his flipflop had stuck under the accelerator pedal. Dramatic CCTV footage, taken from inside the shop, showed the bare bottom of one of the thong-clad women, as the Roller crashed through the glass at high speed after mounting a kerb. In a second video, shot on a bystander’s mobile phone, apparently, the curvy South American passengers are seen standing on the pavement in shock, as people try to help Sanders out of the badly-damaged Dawn Coupe. Witnesses said the women were gyrating

to music and taking selfies prior to the incident, and added that the trio fled on foot before police arrived to breathalyse the driver, who “narrowly missed” running into several

people, dining on the next-door restaurant’s terrace. The costly motor, which has the personalised licence plate “JODY”, was impounded by authorities after being abandoned. Maria Mamen, owner of the damaged shop, said she recognised Sanders since he bought cigarettes there regularly, adding that he had already called to apologise. “He was very polite and asked for the insurance details so he could start sorting things out with them,” she said. “He said his foot had got caught under the pedals, and that he was very sorry for any problems he had caused.” She added: “He’s obviously caused a good

few thousand euros’ damage to the shop, as well as to his own car. “We’ve had to remain closed, and we’ve put security staff on to guard the merchandise, night and day. “The word round here is that the man had been partying with the two women at Nikki Beach, in Magaluf.” Jose Martin, who manages La Perla restaurant, said: “We saw the car pass a few minutes earlier. “The man was driving, the music was blaring, and two very pretty South American women were in bikinis, dancing and taking selfies. “He pulled into the car park of a supermarket that was closed, just down the road, and they sat there for about five minutes.

“The next minute there was this tremendous noise, and the car reversed up the road at speed and hit the kerb just outside the restaurant terrace, before spinning round and smashing into the tobacco shop next door.” Mr Martin added: “If he’d hit the kerb a few seconds earlier, we could have been looking at a major loss of life because there were about 20 people on the terrace. “I took down the car’s number plate, and called the police. But by the time they arrived, the driver and the two women were gone.” Sanders is known to flaunt his wealthy lifestyle on social media, and his Facebook page pictures him in sports cars and on yachts, as he quaffs Champagne with beautiful women. He is believed to divide his time between a mansion in Henley-inArden, Warwickshire, and a luxury villa in Bendinat, close to the crash scene. His other cars, according to reports, include a 300,000-euro Lamborghini Aventador, a 170,000-euro Audi RS8 and a 115,000-euro Range Rover.

Civil-War TV series sparks more conflict

A LEADING American TV producer has denied he is stirring up political conflict with a new series, featuring an American battalion fighting in the Spanish Civil War. David Simon, who created The Wire, has based his series, A Dry Run, on a group of Americans, who came to fight against former dictator Franco in the 1930s. It was created in collaboration with Bar-

celona-based Mediapro and tells of the legion’s bravery while fighting for the democraticallyelected Republic. But Simon has been accused by various Twitter followers of “trying to start another civil war”. One described it as a “very sad episode… which should not be taken lightly”. However, Simon defended the plot, insisting that while he was aware that “many in

Spain preferred no reflections on the past”, as a journalist, he did not agree. His critically-acclaimed The Wire show was described as “the best TV series ever” by the Guardian. The Civil War, and Franco’s dictatorship, remain deeply-sensitive issues in Spain, with recent events in Catalunya leading to accusations of the Government being fascist.

Bad rhythms mean blues! By Val Sainsbury STICKING to a normal daily rhythm, which means being active during the day and sleeping at night, can have more benefits than you might expect.

A new study looked at disruptions in the circadian rhythms, or daily sleep/wake cycles, of over 91,000 adults in the United Kingdom. It measured these by using a device called an accelerometer, that is worn on the wrist and measures one’s daily activity levels. The participants were taken from over half a million UK adults, aged 37-73. The researchers found that individuals with more circadian-rhythm disruptions, defined as increased activity at night, decreased activity during the day, or both, were significantly more likely to have symptoms consistent with bipolar disorder or major depression. They were also more likely to have decreased feelings of well-being, and reduced cognitive functioning. “It’s widely known that a good night’s sleep is a

good thing for well-being and health,” said Dr. Daniel Smith, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Glasgow, and a leading author on the study. “But I think what’s less well-known is that not only is a good night’s sleep important, but having a regular rhythm of being active in daylight and inactive in darkness, over time, is important for mental well-being.” Daily circadian rhythm is controlled by a collection of neurons in an area of the brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus helps regulate a number of important behavioural and physiological functions such as body temperature, eating and drinking habits, emotional well-being and sleep. A 2009 study showed that men who worked night shifts, for four years or more, were more likely to have anxiety and depression, than those who work during the day. The findings have significant public health consequences, particularly for those who live in urban areas, where circadian rhythms are often disrupted due to artificial light. “By 2030, two-thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities, and we know that living in an urban environment can be pretty toxic to you,” Smith said. “So we need to think about ways to help people tune in to their natural rhythms

of activity and sleep more effectively. Hopefully, that will protect a lot of people from mood disorders.” For those who struggle to maintain a consistent circadian rhythm, certain strategies, such as avoiding technology at night, have proven to be an important part of a good sleep routine. “Not using your phone late at night and having a regular pattern of sleeping is really important,” Smith said. “But equally im-portant is a pattern of exposing yourself to sunshine and daylight in the morning, and doing

activity in the morning or midday, so you can actually sleep properly. “It’s a cross-sectional study, so we can’t say anything about cause and effect or what came first, the mood disorder or the circadian disruption,” said Kristen Knutson, Associate Professor of Neurology at Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study. “And it’s likely they affect each other in a circular fashion,” she added. The researchers also looked exclusively at adults between age 37 and 73, meaning the results

may not apply to younger individuals, whose circadian rhythms are known to be different from those of older adults, according to Smith. “The circadian system changes throughout life. If you’ve got kids, you know that very young ones tend to be nocturnal,” Smith said. “It’s an exciting time for this kind of research because it’s beginning to have some real-world applications,” he said. “I think it’s probably under-recognised in psychiatry how important healthy circadian function is, but it’s an area we’re trying to develop.”

Slim chance of dieting with shamed products CONSUMER authorities in Spain have “named and shamed” a total of 23 products on sale, said to work “diet miracles” and aid weight-loss. They also reveal that, currently, there is no proper control over the advertising or distribution of these goods. The OCU’s Kilos de Mentiras (“Kilos of Lies”) campaign says many dietary supplements, slimming pills and foodstuffs, which promise to cause, or hasten, weight loss, make false claims on their labels. and in their publicity. It is illegal to advertise

“health results”, say the authorities, yet many do so! “Health results” are, in this case, claims such as “reduces weight”, “helps control weight” or “for a flat stomach”.

As well as the 23 products which breach advertising rules, the OCU has visited 80 pharmacies and parapharmacies, together with fitness, health and herb shops, and slimming centres. It says that “certain establishments advertise diagnostic techniques or treatment”, which have no evidence of any success. One of these is the famous “imaginary gastric band”, in which customers are hypnotised into believing they have had a stomach reduction and think they are full-up, long before they really are, leading

to their eating less. Other than 12 pharmacies of a total of 28, and one fitness centre, all the other 80 premises failed their inspection. Staff had no identification, which meant it was not possible to check what qualifications or training they held and, though none of the people who posed as customers actually needed to lose weight, fewer than half the establishments made this clear. In four of the establishments, accomplices of a healthy size were, directly, recommended slimming products.

The OCU has named the 23 products it found, which are either in breach of advertising regulations, have no evidence to support their claims, or are nutritionally dubious. These are 2WD, Aspolvit, B.Slim, Café Verde (green coffee), Café Verde Lipomodelador, Captalip, Carni Lean, Delicaslim, Dietabelt Reduexpress, Dren Green, Drenabeplus, Drenalight Hot, Drenat Plus, E’Lifexir, Fat Burner Plus, Garcinia Cambogia Plus, Lipo Less, OB3, Quema Rapid, Quema, Quema Fort, Slank Burner and Termolip.

The great fuel puzzle! By Emma

from Motorworld

IF you are considering changing your car, maybe the type of fuel the new one uses should now be an important factor, when influencing a decision to reduce your carbon footprint. The most common types are still petrol and diesel, yet hybrids, such as electric and hydrogen cars, are upand-coming in the market. Petrol is divided into two main areas: Sin Plomo 95 and Sin Plomo 98. The 95 and 98 stand for the research-octane ratings, and the higher the rating, the better the performance. All manufacturers build their engines to work with a certain type of petrol. Yet, curiously, many handbooks do not tell you what fuels are better for your engine.

The exact petrol needed can be found out via technical data, usually held by garages and mechanics. Petrol engines are normally quieter and cheaper to repair than their diesel counterparts, but they are not as environmentally friendly. Diesel, or gasoil, as it is referred to here, has lower C02 emissions, and some high-performance diesel fuels are available in Tenerife. Diesel has high engine-efficiency, but is louder than its petrol equivalent, yet it is more economical for those drivers who do more kilometres. Hybrid combines a rechargeable electric sys-

tem, with a fuel-based engine. Usually, the electric battery is recharged by an internal combustion engine, or from the kinetic energy absorbed when braking. This results in impressive fuel economy and better efficiency, as well as having lower fuel consumption, lower C02 and other pollutant emissions. However, they are extremely expensive, and not as readily-available as petrol and diesel cars. Hydrogen cars convert chemical energy of hydrogen into mechanical energy, to give the car its power. It has no C02 or other emissions, and is environmentally-

friendly. But hydrogen is highly-flammable, in addition to being difficult to obtain, and store safely. Electric cars need to be charged with your electrical supply, or at garages which have the facility, and the charging time will vary for each make and model. There are no emissions from these types of vehicles, and they are really quiet, with good acceleration. However, they do require a lot of electricity and have a short range, of, approximately, 75 kilometres. And most have a top speed of around 70km/h. This would be a suitable vehicle for someone who travels short distances

only, in and around town. Bio-diesels are produced from the oil of crops, such as oilseed rape, sunflower and soybeans. They can be used as a 5% fraction in existing diesel engines, with no need for modification. Using bio-diesel will reduce the volume of CO2your engine produces by up to 60%, resulting in lower pollutants entering the environment. But bio-diesels produce oxides of nitrogen, which have a tendency to form a smog. Higher volumes than 5% additions can be used, although the engine would need limited modifications, and this might affect the vehicle’s warranty.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke

rocks Amarilla TENERIFE Loves Karaoke, sponsored by Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, continues to be a very poplar, fun-filled event, for the contestants and spectators alike.

The fifth heat took place at The Rockin’ Horse on Amarilla Golf, and to say that it was busy would be an understatement. Like the previous heats, we had a full complement of singers, and a wide variety of songs and ages. And, as before, there was no Adele song in sight! Gordon Slayney was the Tenerife Loves Karaoke host for the night (with resident compere Kerry Railton), and Gary got the evening going with Tom Jones’ Leave your Hat On. This certainly got the competition underway, and there was even some audience participation. Following Gary was Mercedes Benz by Janis Joplin, performed by Azrael, and then Keanne sang Let It Go by James Bay, a real crowd favourite, especially as Keanne had to re-start his song because of a technical fault. Muriel, who sang a Blondie melody at a previous heat, performed the Bee Gees’ number, Tragedy. Jodie took to the stage singing Yazoo’s Only You, and our last singer before the interval was Steven, who sang Dancing On My Own, a Calum Scott hit, and the crowd went mad. During the interval, Kerry, a previous Tenerife Loves Karaoke contestant, from many years ago, entertained the The Rockin’ Horse while everyone recharged their glasses, and had a comfort break. The second half started with Gert producing a great performance of All Rise, by Blue, definitely a crowd favourite, followed by My Way from Steve. Janet sang Bridge Over Troubled Waters, and Clive gave his rendition of a Rod Stewart classic, You’re In My Heart. Shauna followed Clive with a brilliant version of Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, and, if you thought the crowd had been noisy before this performance, they just took the roof off. Following Shauna was Steiner with Don’t stop Believing, who

kept up the level of crowd noise, then Grant followed with Love on the Rocks. Our last contestant was Terry, with Frank Sinatra’s That Life. What a heat we had; the contestants and crowd were awesome. After a short break, the judges had a really hard time in deciding who would be going into the sing-off, and confirmed that Steiner, Steve, Steven and Shauna had been successful. Each name was announced to great applause, as had been the case all night, for every contestant. Their second-song choices were given to Gordon, and the sing-off began with Steven singing Feeling Good, followed by Shauna performing I’m Not the Only One. Steiner was up next singing Bed of Roses, and Steve rounded off the evening with Run. What a night, what a sing off! This was going to be a close call. Everyone performed brilliantly and gave everyone at The Rockin’ Horse a funfilled, entertaining night. However, it is a competition, and it was confirmed that the two contestants going into this year’s semifinals would be Steven and Steiner; congratulations to them both. Each received their heat trophies, and meal vouchers from this year’s sponsors, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. We would like to thank everyone who entered the heat at the The Rockin’ Horse, and Karen and Barry and the staff who made this another memorable heat. The next heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke is Monday, 21st May at The Palms Pool Bar, Golf del Sur. If you would like to enter, to be in with a chance of winning a cash prize of 1,000 euros, performing at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a week’s allinclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to arrange a portfolio and showcase for you, and the chance for a career in entertainment, then call 822 14 15 17, or you can register, directly, at the venue. ON a sunny, but blustery, Friday afternoon, over 80 people converged on La Esquina bar in San Blas. The occasion? To celebrate the opening of a new Vym Canarias office on the Golf del Sur, the fifth along the coast of south Tenerife, for the island’s mostsuccessful estate agency. As the wine flowed and the tapas were consumed, we had the chance to discuss, at length, the property requirements of our new neighbours. Not surprisingly, their needs were pretty mixed. Whilst some were looking for a holiday home where they could escape, should the Beast from the East return to UK shores, any time soon, many

were looking to make a permanent move to the area. When asked for their reasons for wanting to buy on Tenerife, the weather was, as usual, at the top of the list, closely followed by the desire for a more relaxed way of living. Interestingly enough, the elephant in most rooms at the moment, namely Brexit, didn’t seem to be too concerning for most of those we spoke to; the consensus was that life would go on pretty much as normal, come 29th March 2019. What did surprise us was the demand for luxury properties, and, whilst there are several rather nice villas on the Golf, we were able to put people in touch with our other offices along the coast, as far as Callao Salvaje, to

allow them to spread their nets a bit wider. We were also able to discuss, at length, some of the exciting new developments that are springing up all over this part of the island, a true sign of resurgence, if ever there were one. For Vym Canarias, it was a very successful evening, allowing us to meet both existing and new clients, in a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. If this event were anything to go by, Apolina, the Golf del Sur’s manager, and her team, are going to be very busy, over the coming weeks and months. If you would like further information on any of our properties, do get in touch on 922 787 210 or 607 733 052, or go to our website www. tenerifecenter.com

Helping Hands

A delightful feast of kindness for charity Helping Hands to progress further with its projects. Liz added: “Thanks to all friends and local businesses, who supported us by donating gifts for our raffle and auction. “Auctioneer Tim Dowd was so funny, and a great rapper, and thanks, also, to my special team of helpers for all their hard work, and to the children (Charlin, Sara, Joe, Francis, Gaby and Luca), who sold all the El Mars’ CDs. “We will also be supporting Guargacho’s CEE Disabled School, with a project to supply lots of essential equipment for the children, such as computers, printers and special, electronic touch-pads.”

CHILDREN’S charity Helping Hands raised a whopping 5,004 euros for Tenerife’s underprivileged kids last Saturday at Dehli Delights restaurant, in the Vulcano Hotel, Las Americas. Organiser Liz Montague, who runs the charity, said: “I’m overwhelmed and delighted that we raised this fantastic sum. “It was a fabulous day, with 200 people joining together to raise the funds, and we had a great time making it happen.” Guests, who were greeted with a glass of bubbly, enjoyed the enticing stalls from Granadilla with Love (hand-made jewellery), Ideas de Nana ((jewellery), as well as Melani’s stunning dresses and accessories. ElMar entertained everyone with a special song she wrote, especially, for

Helping Hands, and the dancers were stunning. Everyone enjoyed the tasty buffet, and, overall, the entire day went off brilliantly. To top it off, one of the charity’s loyal supporters, who wishes to remain anonymous, is making an annual donation of 6,000 euros to enable

Don't forget to do this! WE can never stress enough the importance of microchipping your dogs. It is also a legal requirement for them to undergo this procedure, and to be registered at your local town hall. These three dogs were found roaming the streets, between Buzanada and Guaza, all without microchips. It makes it very difficult to reunite dogs, quickly, with their irresponsible owners, and causes them needless stress. Please microchip your dog, and ensure the information is updated, should you change your address or phone number. Adoption successes Last week, we have had many lucky dogs adopted; nine to Germany, one dog to England, three dogs in Tenerife, and three were reunited with their owners. We are very pleased that people are adopting dogs, and not buying. Assistance required Please contact us if you

can assist in any way, on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. Cats Welfare News

Cats' whiskers HAVE you ever wondered what cats' whiskers actually do, besides tickling our faces at night? The whiskers are so valuable that if they are cut off, the cats would lose their ability to navigate their surroundings. They're so sensitive that they help cats to detect changes in the air current, which helps them get around in the dark, in much the same way we would hold out our arms and use our fingers to feel for objects. This ability also helps with hunting, as they detect the potential swift movement of their prey. Cats also use their muzzle whiskers to help determine whether they can fit through small

gaps. Theoretically, the span of the whiskers is about the same size as the cat's body width, so if they can fit through a gap without bending, then the cat should get through. But if the cat is a bit tubby, then this isn't always the case! The whiskers above cats' eyes help when they're hunting in grassy or bushy areas. They trigger a protective blink if there is something that might get in the eyes. Their whiskers can also reflect their mood. When they are hanging loosely on either side, the cats are probably relaxed. When they're scared or ready for a battle, they're flat against their face to

prevent damage, and when they're on alert or hunting, they're forward-facing, to help in prey detection. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. Items can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10-6pm. If you don't have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

CD Tenerife review

TORRENTIAL rain wasn’t the only thing going down the drain as CD Tenerife failed to beat 10man Reus. The legs were willing, but, mentally, Tenerife had switched off a couple of weeks ago.

18th May - 24th May 2018

Switched off… dropped out! Reus 1 CD Tenerife 1

Yet it just didn’t make sense, because the promotion playoff door was still ajar for them. Coach Etxeberria made changes to his starting lineup, but even the fringe players showed a lack of ideas and purpose. Jorge was given a rare outing, but it seems likely that he was in the shop window. The Spain Under-20 centreback has not lived up to his early promise. The club look ready to cash him in to the tune of around three million euros, and though he did okay, he simply isn’t assertive enough. Up front, Malbasic started, and had one of his better games. But Juan Carlos Real showed why the coach hasn’t used him much since his arrival, a few months ago. But Casadesus continued his good form, opening with a near miss from a pass by fit-again Juan Villar. The rain made the pitch unpredictable, and keeper Dani did well to follow a onehanded save with a stand-up block at the post. Shooting on sight was worth a gamble in the conditions, and Alberto sent in a dipping volley, which had the home keeper struggling. Reus, who were splashing through the puddles to get the point that would end their relegation fears, took the lead when Yoda tried to squeeze the ball past Dani at the post. The keeper got a foot to clear it, but only as far as Miramon, who lifted his shot over and past Dani into the net. With just under 15 minutes played, Juan Villar and Olmo collided. The home player fell, but he leapt up and butted Villar in the face, to earn a red-card dismissal. That offered a way back for Tenerife, who exploited it with a classy goal from Juan Villar. A cross looked to be favourite from his position

out wide. Instead, he struck a perfect right-foot shot into the back of the goal. A fit Villar throughout the season would have enhanced Tenerife’s promotion hopes greatly, but they have had only small, irregular helpings of him. The striker was just slightly off-target with a further shot, and Casadesus ended the first half with a glancing header, which found the wrong side of the post. Dry shirts at half-time heralded the end of the rain, and, maybe, brought back Tenerife’s comfort-zone feeling. The tempo was a little slower for the visitors, and, without the suspended Acosta, there were fewer creative moves. Alex Mula replaced Alberto, and though the on-loan winger’s pace and fury has subsided lately, Luis Milla, who is still buzzing, set up Malbasic for a close header. Casadesus showed determination to beat three defenders, but the end product, which lacked the same spirit, was collected by the keeper. Montañes came on for Juan Carlos, but it was just one ineffective player for another, and Reus had thoughts of grabbing a winner. Yoda roasted Camille and slipped the ball to Silva, but Dani hardly flinched as he absorbed his fierce shot. Home sub Menendez tried a cross-cum-shot, which proved another easy take for Dani. Then Malbasic and Milla combined to irritate the keeper as the game fizzled out, and the paltry 2,208 crowd squelched home. But at least Reus had gained what they needed. But how infuriating the last few weeks have been for Tenerife fans. Their team, now seven points adrift from the play-offs, with three games left, have dropped 13 points in the last five games. The indifferent form of their rivals means that Tenerife could still have been in the mix for the final push. Tonight (Friday) at 8pm, they are hosting Sporting Gijon, who are after the top spot. Again, those two words, “if only”, are hanging in the Santa Cruz air.

CD Marino

Signing off, on a high C O M F O R TA B LY safe, with no promotion or relegation issues to chase, both teams could have cruised through their final game. Instead, they served up a keenly-contested goal feast. Kevin Castro showed early initiative, with a delicate chip through to Yassine, before away defender Dani robbed him as he teed up a shot. Ahmed, who has grown in stature during the season for Marino, opened the visiting defence with ease all afternoon. Yassine fired wide from his first opening, and Ahmed put a shot of his own straight at the Las Palmas keeper. The Gran Canarian side were ready to make a full contribution to an entertaining game, with speedy left-back Sito trying a couple of raids, and captain

Royal appointment awaits! Espanyol 0 Egatesa Granadilla 3 IT’S not just the end of Granadilla’s best league season, but also their springboard for cup glory, live on television!

They closed their Premier League campaign with a comfortable away win at Espanyol to underline their fourth-place credentials. The top-eight teams will now battle it out for the Copa del Reina (Queen’s Cup), starting on Sunday at Real Betis. Espanyol didn’t know what hit them when Paloma Lazaro finished off a cross from Koko after six minutes to give the visitors an early lead. Ana Gonzalez made it 2-0 after 23 minutes with a tap-in after a good buildup. That would have been enough to have the ladies smiling. But just before the final whistle, Ana netted again, this time Californiaborn Megan Crosson supplying the ammunition. The Copa del Reina quarterfinal draw paired Granadilla with Real Betis, and their

first leg is away on Sunday, at 11am. It will be shown live on BEIN TV, with the

chance. He also performed a great stop from Alejo, but the visiting player hung around to net the rebound. Arysay then robbed the ball from Marino right-back Nami and fired in a cross, cleared well by Prince. But Marino kept probing, and their persistence paid off from a flowing move. Nami’s throw-in found Yassine with space to pass to Ahmed, who swerved inside and beat the keeper with a well-placed shot. It was clear that both sides had an eye for goal. Yassine tested the Las Palmas keeper with a high shot, and added a long-range scoop which just cleared the bar. Arysay was in his stride for Las Palmas, breaching the home defence again to serve up an easy chance for Alejo, who couldn’t get the ball on target. But the first half reached a spectacular finish as the teams swapped goals. Hernandez put in a fierce shot for Las Palmas, the ball rebounding to Dani, who

scored. Marino snapped straight back on the left, with a fast break from Zeben, whose finishing was good enough to make it 2-2 at the end of a whirlwind 45 minutes. The pace slackened a little in the second half, as both sides tightened up to restrict chances. But it was still an even, well-balanced contest. Hernandez set up Perrera for a shot, but David, who was having another impressive game, made light work of saving it. Marino returned fire with a Meji break and a pass to Prince, who slipped as he went to shoot, and the moment was gone. Las Palmas mounted a sustained threat, forcing four corners in quick succession. David turned three away and Perrera headed over with the other. Marino then made a triple substitution, which included Scottish brothers Connor and Cameron from the club’s youth system. Local talent might be the way forward next season, because, the previous day, Marino’s under-18 team won their championship, and promotion from their division. With the season nearly over, everyone fancied signing off with a goal. Centre-back Hector came close, but, with the goal at his mercy, his rising shot went over the bar. Full-back Sito, who had shown attacking flair all game for Las Palmas, worked his way into a good position, only to send his shot high and wide. Marino then made a huge effort to win the game late on. Nami started the season as a striker, before switching to right-back. But he still has that goal touch, as he demonstrated with a lovely shot into the bottom corner of the net, to complete a thrilling victory.

Iberostar Tenerife 86 FC Barcelona 81 WHAT a confidencebooster and statement of intent for Iberostar Tenerife, who beat thirdplaced Barcelona in front of a 5,044, sell-out, La Laguna crowd. It reinforced Tenerife’s eighth-place league standing, and their final play-off Championship spot, with two regular league games still to play. Star of the match was Greek player Kositas Vasileiadis, with 18 points for Tenerife, which was his highest return yet. Rodrigo San Miguel also impressed with his accurate passes, 11 of them leading to home baskets. The first half saw Iberostar build a lead with quarter scores of 21-16, and 25-16. Barcelona tried to wrestle the game back from their hosts with 27-20 and 2220 advantages, but it just wasn’t enough and the stadium rocked with the sound of home delight. Inspirational captain Nico

IF your body is a temple, what better than some Sunday-morning worship. El Medano will be wide awake this Sunday, from 8.30am, as 340 of the best athletes in the Canaries take on the Triatlon Olimpico.

Richotti, still be recovering from a three-month injury, is still very much part of the club’s plans. The Argentine joined the

club in 2010 and has now been given a new, two-year contract extension, which should put an extra spring in his recovery steps.

EXTRA-TIME ADEJE Rally was a scorching success last weekend, Jose Antonio Suarez heading the Spanish Championship round with a combined winning time of 1hr 29min over the two sprint days. The Canarian Championship round was won by Sergio Perria in 1hr,29mins,57secs. Both winners drove a Hyunda120 RS.

GREAT Britain emerged triumphant in the Ryder Cup golf challenge against the Canary Islands, at Buenavista del Norte. They won the singles competition 9-5, and the doubles finished level at 5-5. The big winner, though, was the Seve Ballesteros Memorial golf weekend. This was the second annual event named after Spain’s favourite golfing son, who designed the Buenavista del Norte course in 2003. CD TENERIFE B have eclipsed the senior football team by qualifying for their promotion play-offs. They won 2-0 at Guimar on Sunday to clinch Group 12 of the Tercera Division, both goals coming from Brian Martin. There are 18 regional groups in the Tercera, which means a long, drawn-out promotion campaign for those in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places. But it’s just a two-legged final for the group winners to hurdle, and the prize is a place in Segunda B, which is Spain’s third tier and just below Tenerife senior team’s league. Tenerife B play at CF Madrid this Sunday, and home against them the following Sunday. Promotion would be a huge boost to the club, and help the development of the B team’s under-23 players. Maybe a few will be pushing for a senior shirt, come August. RUNNING in the dark isn’t everyone’s idea of fun, but it’s a popular sport in Tenerife. Tomorrow (Saturday) the Binter Night Run, is taking place in Santa Cruz, featuring 2,700 athletes, which is 200 more than last year. It’s an international event, with 22 nationalities taking part. They start out from the Plaza de La Concepcion at 9pm, competing in 5km and 10km events. All runners have a head band, with a small, battery-powered light, and the course is over main streets, so they won’t be losing anyone!

The second-oldest triathlon in the Canary Islands is part of the Canary Series which is held each year across the seven islands. The 300 men and 40 women competing will start out from Playa Leocadis Machado for a 1.5km swim around El Medano bay. The next stage is cycling 40km around El Medano and out to Los Abrigos and back, three times. And the final stretch is a 10km run around El Medano. It will be quite spectacular to watch, and, hopefully, will inspire more people to take up sport, even if not at this intense level.
