Why is it Tax Efficient to hold a Spanish Tax Compliant Bond?
S
etting up a Spanish tax compliant investment is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs. If you are thinking of investing but concerned about the tax implications of a bond, read on to see how it works. Tax may be payable if you were tax resident in Spain when you invested in your bond and you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The applicable tax rate will depend on your residency status and your individual circumstances at the time you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The Individual Income Tax (IIT) regime applies to all individuals who are currently tax resident in Spain and do not benefit from the Special Tax regime. A withholding tax of 19% over the gain from your bond will be operated. This will be paid to their Spanish fiscal representative who will in turn submit the proceeds directly to the Spanish tax authorities on your behalf. So, how does it work? Look at the generic example below:
Example of a Partial Surrender – no previous chargeable events Premium (initial value assumed used)
€100,000
Surrender Value
€130,000
Partial surrender amount Policyholder resident/Spanish resident before chargeable events (Initial premium/surrender value) x partial surrender amount (€100,000/€130,000) x €5,000 (€5,000 - €3,846.15) Tax at 19% on taxable income (€1,153.85 x 19%) Amount paid to policyholder Surrender value – partial surrender amount (€130,000 - €5,000)
€5,000 Yes Portion corresponding to premium and non taxable €3,846.15 Taxable income (€1,153.85) Tax due €219.23 (€5,000 - €219.23) = €4,780.77 Closing surrender value of Bond €125,000
The above example is for illustration purposes only, your personal circumstances will determine how the bond is taxed. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

Adeje are streets ahead Cont. from Front The main car park will create more than 1,000 new spaces, and, included in the overall expense, is an upgrade to a number of roads and pedestrian zones in the vicinity. The announcement was made by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, alongside Works and Services Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, and Town Technician Román García Higuera. The Mayor said: “We are working to meet our vision of the future for Adeje. And, with these plans, we are meeting some of the main demands of the people in the borough.” The soon-to-be-opened car park lies beside the old Fort House, and the Mayor added: “We have also tried to execute the work in a manner that causes least disruption to the daily lives of our
residents and town visitors. “In the Council’s strategic mobility plan, we have established, quite clearly, that people take precedence over traffic, and that is why, in the constructions planned, we have also included public spaces, bicycle lanes, green zones, etc. “The financing of the projects has been possible because Adeje Council has met all national budgetary requirements.” The Works and Services Councillor said the car parks would comprise open structures, adding: “They have been designed with the public in mind, all with a plaza at street level, containing child-friendly zones, and, in the case of Los Olivos, a sport zone. “The objective is not, simply, to increase parking spaces for residents, but to make shopping, working, or making business calls, easier to carry out. “The design criteria mean
that the car parks are user-friendly, complete with the latest technology, sustainable energies, light sensors, places for cars for those with reduced mobility, and even charging stations for electric cars.” The Councillor stressed: “We have worked to ensure that every euro spent will play a part in improving the quality of life for our residents.” The car park is almost finished in the Fort House zone, at a cost of nearly 3m euros, and it is financed, fully, by the Council. There will be 200, new, public parking spaces for this part of town, and the car park will be managed by a new company, formed for that purpose. It will also create jobs for those on the margins of social exclusion/long-term unemployment. The car park’s technical planning will be similar in the other car parks,
being built in Los Olivos (already underway), Plaza del Emigrante (behind the Town Hall) and La Postura. Putting the needs of the people first is also included in the planning of other, major, road works in the borough. This includes, in particular, the new avenue accessing Costa Adeje from the TF1 motorway, specifically from the Fañabe local police station, down to the Melía Jardines del Teide Hotel roundabout. This work will be carried out in conjunction with the Cabildo, and, as well as a much-improved road, it will include a major pedestrian zone and a bicycle lane (from La Caleta to the roundabout at the Mencey Tinerfe el Grande hotel),
along with green zones and improved drainage. This work will cost in the region of 5m euros, with Adeje Council contributing over 70% of the cost. This is also part of the longstanding vision of Adeje’s Mayor, to improve links between the Costa Adeje tourist zone and the town, while maintaining the particular characteristics and identity of each. It is hoped that this work will be completed by the end of the year. Both the Mayor and the Councillor added that there were other works in the pipeline for neighbourhood improvements. Repaving has already begun in Costa Adeje, and they hope to announce full details soon.
Drunks’ lighter joke backfires drastically SHOCKING footage has emerged of tourists running for their lives after drunken British holiday-makers started a fire in their Mallorcan BH Hotel, which caused damage costing an estimated 200,000 euros. They were using an aerosol can and a lighter in a prank to try to burn their friend’s feet on Sunday night. But the subsequent blaze spread through multiple rooms, causing two floors to be evacuated. Several people, trapped on balconies, were rescued by fire-fighters as black smoke billowed from the building. No one was seriously injured, but several people, including three firefighters, were treated for smoke inhalation. Witnesses told police that there were two women
and three men in the room. One was asleep, and the other four were messing around with the lighter and aerosol can. The drunken tourists have been named as Georgia Jones, Lauren Smith, 19, together with James Brown and Brandon McCahill, both 21.

AIRBNB-style holiday rentals on Tenerife and Gran Canaria will be banned under new regulations, presented by regional governments in the Canary Islands. Town Halls will be offered the chance to establish exceptions under the draft decree, although the larger island authorities will have the final say, in case of any disagreement with the smaller municipal authorities. Canary Islands’ tourist chief Isaac Castellano said his government’s aim was to protect residents’ rights to affordable accommodation. The draft regulations, which have to be approved at a full meeting of the Canarian Government in the latter part of the year, will now be offered to the public in a month-long, consultation period. The Canary Islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are excluded from the new rules on holiday rentals. These are replacing those approved three years ago, banning tourist lettings in holiday areas, with no exceptions. But a subsequent court challenge against them has yet to be resolved. The Canarian Government is also considering the introduction of its own tourist tax, which will be unpopular among hoteliers. Meanwhile, regional councils across Spain are taking steps to curb the rise of holiday rentals.

Tenerife holiday rentals could be written off soon
Most new apartments in Valencia, destined for tourist use, are set to be limited to ground and first-floor flats. The new legislation, which should be passed later this year, will ban all new rentals in the crowded, historic, Ciutat Vella city centre. Madrid has announced plans to allow authorised tourist flats in certain areas of the city, but only if they have their own separate entrance. Officials in Mallorcan capital Palma have reacted to problems of mass tourism
and soaring rents, which have priced-out locals, by banning tourist apartments altogether. From July, tourists wanting to rent somewhere in Palma can choose certain, detached, single-family homes only. Government chiefs in the Balearic Islands have gone to war against illegal, holiday-home lets this year, hitting the likes of Airbnb and TripAdvisor with sixfigure fines. Barcelona has also fined rental websites, for
marketing homes without the necessary licences. The Catalan capital, along with the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Majorca, have experienced the loudest protests about the effects of mass tourism. Last month, nearly 40 organisations were represented at a protest in Ibiza town centre, organised by pressure group Prou. Soon after it launched, the group said in October 2016 that it planned to tackle problems such as packed beaches, environmental de-
terioration and robberies, along with noise and traffic jams, which accompanied Ibiza’s “tourist massification” in summer. Prou announced its aim to become a pressure group, which would force politicians to put an end to urban, environmental and landscape abuse. Some 500 protesters carried cardboard maps of the island with “For Sale” signs on them at the Prouorganised event. Others held up banners complaining about the loud music from party boats and VIP beach clubs, echoing claims that people who live on the party island have seen their quality of life diminish. Days earlier, around 100 people went ahead with a mass tourism protest, coinciding with the arrival in Majorca of the world’s largest cruise ship. The demonstrators held up banners with messages, including “Stop Cruises Palma” and “Horror of the Seas”, shortly after the Symphony of the Seas, which can carry up to 6,680 passengers and 2,200 crew, docked at Palma Port.
Father and son caught in Spain, after a VAT fraud BRITAIN’S fatherand-son tax fugitives are finally behind bars after being captured in Spain and extradited to the UK.
Back in January, former Sandbanks resident Jamie Colwell, and his father, Brian, dodged sentencing at Bournemouth Crown Court for stealing nearly £1m in VAT rebates, for sales of new building property which never existed. Instead, the money was spent on buying luxury cars, designer clothes and a speedboat. Jamie, 51, fled to France in a light aircraft, while his accomplice father, Brian, 76, escaped by ferry, before they both headed to Spain. But Ms James, Jamie’s former partner, who was also involved, attended court and was jailed for one
year and eight months. Yesterday (Thursday), Jamie began his prison sentence of five years and three months, Brian, of Bournemouth, also started his jail term, of two years and eight months, at the same time. The pair were tracked down by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) investigators and their overseas partners, to a villa near Benidorm, where they were arrested by Guardia Civil officers on 9th May. They were returned to the UK on Wednesday afternoon, and were taken into custody overnight, immediately, before appearing at Bournemouth Crown Court by video link yesterday. Richard Wilkinson, Assistant Director of the Fraud Investigation Service, HMRC, said: “The Colwells thought they could evade prison and use their criminal cash to fund a new life
on the Costa Blanca. But they were wrong. “With close co-operation from our international, law-enforcement partners. we tracked the fugitives down, so they can now look forward to jail, instead. He added: “HMRC is determined to ensure absconders face justice. We will pursue those criminals who, blatantly, steal from the public services we all
rely on, and look to recover the proceeds of their crimes from current and future wealth. “We encourage anyone with information about tax fugitives, or suspected tax fraudsters, to report it online, or to contact our Fraud Hotline on 0800 788 887.” Judge Fuller QC said that future sentencing would take place for the breach of bail.
Both men were sentenced, in their absence, at Bournemouth Crown Court on 22nd January 2018. As part of HMRC’s investigation into finding the two fugitives, an Oxfordshire man was arrested on 2nd May, on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice. He has been released under investigation, while inquiries continue.

Family trio held for ‘selling’ girls Teenager revelled in threats to girls A TELDE teenager in Gran Canaria has been arrested and detained by National Police on the grounds of serious threats and infringing Civil Rights. Investigations began when a young woman reported that she feared for her life, after receiving serious death threats across the social media. The police identified a 19-year-old, who was pretending to know the young woman. He used photographs of other people to create false accounts, with the sole
intention of threatening two female classmates. He would then send photos with knives to the young girls making such comments as: “you as a woman are worth nothing, you disgusting being,” and “I’m going to kill you” was another threat he enjoyed posting, as well as: “Let’s see if you are smiling when I slit your throat, and when you’re lying in a pool of blood.” The Police soon located the teenager, who was arrested and charged with making serious threats, and infringement of civil rights. An official report has been presented to the courts, and the youth is awaiting court procedures.
THREE men have been arrested in Tenerife, charged with human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The trio, aged 25-55, have no previous convictions, and, say the cops, they are members of the same family. Investigations started last October when the National Police got wind of a website on which human trafficking, along with helping illegal immigrants, was evident, and the probe resulted
in the three men being identified. The victims were forced to prostitute themselves from a rented Tenerife apartment, while being controlled, constantly, by one of the ringleaders. The young women, who had travelled from Venezuela, had entered the island as tourists. But they were aware they were not coming for a holiday, and it soon became clear what the men’s motives were. Two victims managed to free themselves from their nightmare, thanks to the National Police probe.

A stepping stone to Arona’s new school
FERNANDO Clavijo, who heads the Canarian Government, has placed the first stone to mark the beginning of construction for Guaza’s longawaited secondary school, in Parque de la Reina.
At present, students are attending a prefabricated centre, which was erected, temporarily, in 2002, following an overspill of students in Arona’s secondary-school education. Nearly six million euros have been awarded to the Proyecon Galicia company, which has agreed to terms and conditions, that the project will be finished within two years. The new school, to be built on a plot of land covering 13.120sq/m, will feature 22 units and 18 classrooms for secondary-school education, and a further four for bacherillato (elementary and middle school, for six-year-olds upwards.)

NEWS IN BRIEF Shock for electrical cheats
NEIGHBOURS in a Spanish town thought they’d pulled off a cracking fiddle, but they proved to be less than bright sparks, following a police probe into an electricity fiddle. So far, 20 people have already been arrested in Talayuela, in the Extremadura city of Caceres, via “Operation Spark”, a police counter-action, and they could face charges of defrauding a supply company The cops have been investigating the case since January, when they discovered that several homes did not meet electricity-supply requirements, though they still had power. Those arrested have been accused of defrauding the company of 33,000 euros, and connecting their homes to the electricity distribution network without complying with security measures, or having meters installed. Police said they had also uncovered some cases of meters “being manipulated” and a “sophisticated system of fraudulent use of electricity”. Offficers suspect the involvement of a professional electrician, because of the “complexity of some of the modifications to the network”.
Belgium walker’s painful fall
A BELGIUM woman was rescued on Saturday evening after falling while out on a walking expedition in Garachico. A call was received by the Canarian emergency services at around 7.30pm, requesting assistance, because the 50-yearold had suffered some injuries and could not continue walking. A helicopter was dispatched to the scene, and, because of the terrain, the rescue team had to exit the helicopter to reach her. They assessed her injuries and decided to hoist her on to the helicopter, in which she was taken to a La Guancha helipad, where an ambulance was waiting to transfer her to a Puerto de la Cruz hospital.
Migrant deaths on the rise
THE death rate among undocumented migrants in Spain has risen 15%, since the Spanish Government’s 2012 reforms denied them access to free public healthcare. According to research by the University of Barcelona’s Economics Institute, along with the University Pompeu Fabra’s Centre for Research in Health and Economics (CRES), it has had a direct impact on mortality rates in the population, living in Spain between 2009 and 2015, compared with the previous 2009-2012 period. An additional 70 deaths per year were registered among these migrants since 2012, by a government led by the conservative Partido Popular government.
Dodgy goods worth about 2m in profits AN operation mounted by Arona Local Police anti-fraud team, against the sale of false designer names in Los Cristianos and other areas, has produced some alarming figures.
The cops have confiscated 3,146 dodgy items from shops, which, had they been sold through normal channels, would have realised a total profit of nearly two million euros. And police probes have also revealed that certain establishments specialised in fake merchandise only, which is why at least
seven stores were under investigation. Arona Security Councillor Carolina Reveron says she is satisfied with the results of the operation, adding that a lot of effort had gone into the in-depth probe. She also thanked the Local Police for their efforts, saying: “It has all been worthwhile.”
How does your insurance company value your car after a total loss? GOD forbid this should happen to you, but if your vehicle is treated as a total loss (also know as a “writeoff ”), it is because the cost for the repair is higher than 75% of the actual cash value of the vehicle, or it has sustained so much damage, making it unsafe and not roadworthy. We really hope you won’t ever be involved in this situation, so it is best to be aware of some important aspects, and to be really clued up. For example, Liberty Seguros recommends contracting third-party with theft, fire and total loss, because, in cases where the client has third-party coverage only and it is their fault, you will have no right to compensation. However, in the event that the loss is due to the fault of another person, you would be entitled to compensation for total loss, even if you have only contracted third party cover. Most insurance companies compensate the total loss with the sale value of the vehicle, but bear in mind that after three years of your car’s life, depending on the car, it may have depreciated
by up to 50% or more, so your compensation won’t be that good! On the other hand, choosing the right insurer can make a big difference. In the case of Liberty Seguros, within the first two years after buying your new vehicle, you will be compensated with the value of your car as if it were new. And from that point on: - If the vehicle is up to three years old: you will be compensated with 80% of the value of your car when it was new - If the vehicle is up to four years old: you will be compensated with 70% of the value of your car when it was new - If the vehicle is more than four years old: you will be compensated with the cash value, plus 30% What’s more, in case of total loss, Liberty Seguros does not deduct any type of excess. Although no one wants to lose their car
because of an accident, it’s always better to think about what different insurance companies can offer you, especially if you have just bought a new car! Just think, you will feel more content knowing that your car will still be worth the price you paid for it, for up to two years after you bought it. Apart from all these advantages, Liberty Seguros has an extensive network of over 300 brokers and agents that are dedicated to providing unbiased, friendly and expert advice. Speaking your own language, too, these brokers are available to discuss your needs, face-to-face, and which is the best cover to suit you. With insurance, not only for car and home, but also life, pet, business, commercial, leisure, public liability and personal injury, today Liberty Seguros is considered, by far, the expat’s number-one choice in Spain. A snip above the rest!
MAY is sheep-shearing month, which is something vitally important in the farmers’ calendar, and something that requires special skills.
Sheep-shearing is a craft, as well as being an essential part of farm life. Shearing days are marked off in the calendar, bringing animals and people together. It’s the young, learning from
old, experienced hands. It’s families passing on skills, and communities working in unison. For the sheep, too, a steady, confident hand, wielding those scissors, is important. And they appreciate losing their winter coat as the warm, spring weather takes hold. But they will want the shearing to be carried out in a sure and practised manner… a good shearer will take the
fleece in one piece. You can see how it is done, first-hand, at the Asociación San Juan today (Friday), when there is an Open afternoon from 4-8pm, and you can see sheep
being sheared and the wool being washed, combed and spun. During the afternoon, there will also be a display of decorating the romería poles, which is another
part of traditional Canarian life. The Asociación San Juan, a centre working with special-needs individuals, is in the Calle Manuel Bello Ramos, 56 (www. asociacionsanjuan.es)
Bull-run bullies Rental fraudster is nabbed cause a seizure after four years of fiddling
A demonstrator imitating an injured bull during a protest
FOOTAGE has captured festivalgoers mistreating a bull, as it appeared to suffer a seizure during a festival in Eastern Spain. The half-tonne animal grazed its horns along the tarmac as it struggled to find its feet during the traditional “bou al carrer” bull-run, in Villa Real, Valencia. The bull was running along the designated path when it fell to its knees and ground to a halt. After the crowd whistled at the animal, two men began tugging at its tail
to try to get the creature to carry on running. But it was clear the poor creature was no longer able to run. The black bull was suffering some sort of damage to its central nervous system, according to Jose Enrique Zaldívar, the president of AVATMA, an association of vets against bullfighting. “Even those spectacles that don’t involve blood, such as bous al carrer, also cause intense suffering to the animals,” he added. News comes as demonstrators gear up to protest cruelty to bulls later this month at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square.
PAULA Neale, a serial expat fraudster, has finally been arrested in Spain, following dozens of stories over the past four years about the Brit cheating holiday-makers out of thousands, with fake holiday rentals. Thanks to tip-offs by online Spanish newspaper Olive Press, authorities launched “Operation NEALE” in a bid to track her down. The 44-year-old (pictured) was, reportedly, picked up in Burgos as she was getting into a stolen car on Tuesday. She evaded police by a whisker earlier this year, after the paper alerted authorities that she was hiding in Girona with her two children. The British mum, who used a series of aliases, managed to escape to France, where she set up a new Tinder profile, describing herself as “not your typical
English woman abroad”. The Guardia Civil said: “We have arrested a 44-year-old British national in Spain, whose initials are P.L.N, as part of Operation NEALE. “The detainee is suspected of vehicle theft, stealing car number-plates, falsifying public documents and fraud; namely, four crimes of holiday-rental fraud. “The arrested woman, who is linked to the Costa del Sol, had been reported to police several times for alleged frauds, committed against British nationals
for renting holiday homes in Spain, and sub-letting different properties which weren’t in her name, or didn’t exist. “Neale claimed she had worked as an actress before vanishing from her former Costa del Sol base.” Neale hooked her victims by placing fictitious holiday rentals on Facebook, then taking money from them over PayPal. One British victim lost £750 on a non-existent holiday rental, advertised through an alias Neale claimed to be using. Sara Belmont told the virtual newspaper earlier this year how two couples turned up within hours of each other to rent an apartment, owned by her in Riviera del Sol, near Fuengirola. Yet Neale was said to have moved in as a tenant under her Sharon Tate alias. A source said Neale had been released on bail, because of her young children, after appearing before a judge in a closedcourt hearing, pending an ongoing criminal probe.

Not such an angel!
Embassy plays a part in the royal wedding
A BABY Angel shark took a local swimmer by surprise when he was bitten while taking a swim in Las Teresitas beach, in the north.
It appears that he stood on the shark, accidentally, and it reacted instinctively by biting him on the leg. Cruz Roja (Red Cross) members, who were on the beach, cleaned the swimmer’s wound, and told him that these incidents occurred quite frequently, especially off the Chicharerra beach, also in the north. They also reassured him that the bites from these small sharks were harmless, and that they only bit when feeling threatened. This particular species of the shark family tends to bask in the shallows and hide under sand, where it forages for food. Angel sharks are considered an endangered species in Europe, though their population seems to thrive in Canarian waters.
Wipe out wet-wipes
SPAIN is waging war on wet wipes being flushed down the loo, because, as many of us are aware, they cause enormous environmental damage.
A call by the Grupo Parlamentario Vasco to halt them being used was approved, unanimously, by all parties in the Senate. The Spanish Government is now preparing to mount an awareness campaign, highlighting the risks of throwing them down the toilet, which leads to blocked pipes and home floods, and costly repairs. Besides the campaign, there will have to be a major rethink on how wipes can be repackaged, so that shoppers can identify which are biodegradable, and those that are not.

THE British Embassy in Spain joined last Saturday’s celebrations of the Royal Wedding, between Prince Harry and American Meghan Markle, by hosting a party. It was held in the home of Simon Manley, the British Ambassador to Spain. The Embassy, inspired by the Royal couple’s desire for the day to reflect their characters and values, and their invitation to those from around the UK, linked to their charitable work, celebrated this wonderful occasion in Madrid, together with British citizens and others who have made an outstanding contribution to their local communities from across Spain.
By awarding diplomas, the Ambassador acknowledged the invaluable work of community organisations, such as Cancer Support Mallorca, the University of the Third Age U3A and the Samaritans in Spain; church groups and cemetery foundations, such as the British one in Madrid; military organisations, like the Royal British Legion; associations, such as the British Hispanic Foundation, or the British Ladies’ Association, as well as news outlets such as Costa Blanca News, EuroWeekly News and SUR in English. British educational institutions and Spanish town halls were also awarded diplomas, as well as some honorary consuls and British citizens, who have collaborated on publicawareness campaigns. Simon Manley said: “This wonderful event illustrates
the enormous breadth and depth of the contributions made by British people, working with our local partners, in almost every corner of Spain. “For example, we have community groups who work with the elderly and the unwell, the Royal British Legion, church groups, community groups, British schools representing the 55,000 children who study in them across Spain, and, of course, our local partners from Town Halls, and our Honorary Consuls.” He added: “It has been an honour to meet such a huge range of inspirational people, and to celebrate this Royal wedding together.” Following the presentation of diplomas, attendees were able to enjoy the wedding service, screened live on various TVs through BBC coverage.

BRIGITTE Gypen, Walk for Life Foundation President, has presented the BRA project to Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo. San Miguel and Arona Councils are also involved in the project. The idea is that a new, specially-adapted bra, will be donated to every woman who needs to undergo a mastectomy. Brigitte said: “To ensure a rapid recovery, particularly after such an invasive procedure as a mastectomy, one of the important elements to take into consideration is the use of a bra. “Following the operation, they will need to be made to fit individual patients, from a particular material that isn’t abrasive, which closes in front, is comfortable, and can also be adapted to suit each woman’s needs.” Cllr Trujillo Bencomo said: “The Council has always been ready to offer and improve services, which impact directly on the quality of life of individuals. “To that end, we have improved the integral service to oncology patients on offer: a preventative lymphoedema diagnostic service; a transport option for patients who need treatment in hospitals, in addition to a water-based programme to help prevent lymphoedema. “All of these services are in partnership with the Spanish Cancer Association, with whom we have worked closely over the years.” One in every eight women will suffer from breast cancer, according to the cancer observation unit of the AECC, the Spanish Association against Cancer. The Association has also reported that 1,132 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in the
Walk for Life BRA project presented to local Councils
Canary Islands in 2017, an increase over the previous year’s numbers. The BRA project was born out of this reality, working to meet a real and existing need, to give women who have had a mastectomy something essential to their recovery. All help welcome Solidarity is one of the fundamental pillars of the Carrera por la VidaWalk for Life Foundation.
And to make the BRA project a reality, funds are needed for the acquisition of these adapted bras, the campaign administration and promotion, as well as letting people know about the project, delivery of the bras, etc. The Foundation depends on a number of donations, already received from various sponsors and other individuals. And it will also be happy to accept more

He was charged with driving under the influence, as well as dangerous driving, and is awaiting a court hearing.

voluntary (and anonymous, if so desired) donations. Brigitte added: “Any monies given to the Foundation are used, strictly and only, in the fight against cancer, and they are legally declared to the state, so that anyone can check to see that all donations are registered properly.” The Fundación Canaria Carrera por la Vida/Walk for Life is a solidarity initiative which works, on one hand, to raise awareness about the importance of early detection in breast cancer, and, on the other hand, is there to meet the needs and demands of people affected by breast cancer, and their families. This solidarity movement has now been 13 years in existence, raising awareness and funds, which are given to relevant associations and service providers. It also goes towards assisting research and investigations into improving the quality of life of those affected by this illness, and, also, ways to improve the recovery of patients, both physical and psychological, in as short a time as pos-
sible. What started out 13 years ago as a one-off, solidarity walk in Santa Cruz, has grown over the years and is one of the biggest such events in the South of the island, with almost 5,000 people taking part last year. Recently, the movement became a Foundation, which means officials can work closer with the associations in their fight against cancer, helping them assist sufferers and their families. There must also be a better, essential level of investigation to fight cancer, and the main reason funds are going towards projects exploring liquid biopsy of cancer is that it’s a new technology, which is faster and less invasive for the analysis of tumour mutations. And, thankfully, it is now a reality in treating some forms of cancer. From now on, the Carrera por la Vida-Walk for Life Foundation can do more and contribute more, organise more activities, help more people, and, thus, continue to make a difference.

Stag and hen parties face huge fines in second city IN the wake of Marbella, another Spanish city is promising a clampdown on stag and hen parties, if police spot them in offensive costumes, or if their behaviour appears “offensive”. Police officers in Sevilla, the capital city of Andalucia, have been ordered by the local Council to issue groups with a fixed penalty of up to 3,000 euros. But that’s only if their behaviour appears “undignified” in any way, under Article 15 of the Spanish Constitution. The backlash follows reports that a religious procession in the city clashed with a group of hens, who were whacking each other over the head with giant phallic inflatables. The police were contacted by the worshippers and moved the hen party on. Sevilla Council has taken a leaf out of the Costa del Sol authorities, who warned, recently, that stag and hen parties would be fined up to 750 euros for roaming the streets of Marbella drunk,
Once-in-a-lifetime offer, by teenager semi-naked… or wielding inflatable sex toys! They vowed to launch a crackdown on raucous behaviour, amid fears that the upmarket city’s image was being ruined. New laws, banning disorderly behaviour, nudity and semi-nudity, and swimwear on the holiday hotspot streets, should be in place before the summer season. According to official documents, it will be illegal to be seen in public, “naked, semi-naked, with a naked torso, in underwear, with clothes or accessories that represent the genitals or other intimate body parts, or with dolls, devices, sym-
bols or elements of a sexual nature.” Bikinis and other swimwear will also be outlawed, “except in swimming pools and on the beach”. Police will, reportedly, issue an initial warning to offenders, with those who argue or ignore them slapped with fines. The decree will also cover anyone harassing children, the elderly or disabled, with penalties of up to 3,000 euros. And individuals charged with “discriminatory behaviour”, including racist, sexist or homophobic insults, will have to fork out up to 1,500 euros.
A SPANISH teenager is auctioning her virginity after stating she has been ‘too busy’ studying to find a boyfriend.
Alice Hayson, a 19-yearold from Spain, but now living in Latin America, set up a website for anyone interested in bidding. Any potential suitors, who don’t want to hang around waiting to see if their bid is the highest, can click “buy it now” for one million euros! The brunette told a British daily newspaper that she’d already received an offer of 250,000 euros from an Italian businessman. “I am convinced this is the
best decision for me, as I have zero sexual experience and I am interested in exploring my sexuality,” she said. “So an experienced man would provide the best learning experience for me.” The student of English, who is also a part-time model, hopes to use the proceeds to study astronomy, preferably in Spain, because the undisclosed city she is living in does not offer the course. And any extra money will also go towards helping her family members out of debt. Currently, three offers have been received, with Alice’s manager verifying documents, produced by bidders, to confirm that they have the means to pay.

Loro Parque’s unique, eye-opening aquarium A NEW, unprecedented, internationally-important exhibition, in the form of a landscape aquarium, opens at the end of May at Loro Parque. This Japanese-style underwater garden is the first of its kind to be built in the world, and it awakens feelings reminiscent of Atlantis, the legendary underwater city. With this unique commitment, Loro Parque offers its visitors innovations which are unique to the world, and, as always, they have been designed with excellence. The underwater exhibition, inspired by Japanese forest landscapes, along with the majestic Asian mountain ranges, has been created using the “aqua-scaping” technique. It is unique, worldwide, for its complexity, innovation and beauty, conveying depth and balance in the purest Zen style. And it is
sure to captivate fans of flora and fauna alike. It stands out, not only for its complexity, but also for the species used in its creation, in addition to the distribution of the plants and their luxuriance. The latter is a key aspect, because many of them have to adapt to the growth of their leaves in a submerged space. It evokes a level of aesthetics, cared for to the millimetre, and similar to the art of pruning and maintaining a bonsai. Visitors are bound to marvel at the complexity of the flora, totally alive and in all its splendour. Through this incredible underwater garden, Loro Parque, as a wildlife conservation centre, is emphasising the importance of maintaining the balance of the natural environment ecosystems, representing the wonders of nature. The exhibition will be open to the public from Friday, 1st June, after its official opening next Thursday (31st May).
Loro Park Foundation banishes parrot worry
LORO Parque Foundation, thanks to its conservation efforts, has saved nine parrot species from imminent, total extinction. Since its 1994 creation, the Foundation has spent more than $18,000,000 (15m euros) supporting conservation projects for endangered species. The change of “threat”
category in many of these nine parrot species is a worldwide environmental conservation success, which makes this nonprofit organisation, internationally, the most effective in this area. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) “Red List”, groups the various species into different categories of
threat: of minor concern, almost threatened, vulnerable, endangered, critically-endangered, extinct in the wild and extinct. The psittacids (parrots), were one of the most threatened groups of birds on the planet. Now, though, these species have been saved from imminent extinction, thanks to Loro Parque Foundation.

New drug-cartel worry for Spain THE Costa del Sol is at risk of having its very own drug cartel, as the region’s narcogangs grow bolder, according to a police union. Last month saw a swathe of serious incidents at the hands of narcos. A sting enabled police to seize 8.7 tonnes of cocaine, hidden in a container ship arriving in Cadiz from Colombia last month. It was the largest capture on record, and it meant that the cops had pounced on more cocaine in the strait of Gibraltar by the end of April, some 11.8 tonnes in all, than in the whole of 2017. Yet police estimate that only 20% of drugs carried by smugglers into Spain actually get spotted.
The 31.25% youth unemployment rate in Cadiz is making its young people easy pickings for gang leaders, said Juan Fernandez, the Guardia Civil’s national union (AUGC) spokesperson. “It is seen less of a crime and
more as a way of life,” he added. He believes that a cartel, formed by a merger between rival gangs, with the power to penetrate institutions, is not far off. His claim has been rejected strongly by Juan Ignacio
Zoido, Spain’s Interior Minister. Yet Juan Encinas, a concerned Cadiz Guardia Civil union official, said: “The surge in violence by drug-traffickers is increasing, and there are more and more attacks.” A nine-year-old boy was
killed when a boat linked to drug-smuggling collided with the vessel he and his father were on earlier this month. And a top trafficker escaped from police custody recently when fellow gang members stormed a hospital in La Linea de la Concepcion, where he was being monitored. Algeciras locals protested at the worsening drug-gang violence in the main square last week, when Guardia officers were beaten with broken bottles and clubs as they left a restaurant. The Spanish Government is responding, but unions claim that police reinforcements being sent are simply not enough to combat the gangs. Unions are demanding an extra 300 officers and tougher penalties for youths involved in the drugs trade.
New Catalan chief runs the Government risk THE Spanish Government will continue to maintain direct rule in Cataluña, in response to new President Quim Torra’s appointment of proindependence politicians to his cabinet. Madrid said the appointments, which included two officials, Jordi Turull and Josep Rull, in custody since earlier this year and awaiting trial for their part in last year’s independence push, were a “provocation”. But they both accepted their nominations on Twitter. The appointments of Toni Comin and Lluis Puig, who remain abroad and are wanted by Spanish authorities for their part in Cataluña’s bid for secession last year, were also blocked. But Torra responded by saying he had the authority to appoint officials to his cabinet and government, and that he hoped the Gov-
ernment would recognise that. He has, reportedly, asked Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy to speak with him about the issue. Spain’s Government has blocked the publication of the appointments in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat of Cataluña, where appointments must be published in the Gazette to become official. The Government said another decree, signed by Torra, which outlined areas of responsibility for his new
government, did not raise “viability problems”, and that it had been published. Madrid added that, in the region, it would continue to maintain Article 155, which is the legal mechanism used to run the area from the Spanish capital. The move, by governing conservative Partido Popular (PP), has been backed by the two opposition unionist parties, the leftleaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) and the centrist Ciudadanos. Torra was elected by the
Catalan Parliament and sworn in, a few days later, in a ceremony marking the end of nearly seven months of political limbo in the north-eastern Spanish region. Catalonia has been under direct rule from Madrid since the Spanish Government deposed Puigdemont, following a failed declaration of independence last October. Torra, a 55-year-old editor, who has long campaigned for independence, described himself as a “caretaker president” as he awaited the return of Puigdemont, whom he still considered the “legitimate” leader. In a brief swearing-in ceremony, Torra promised “to loyally fulfil the duties of the post of regional president, being faithful to the will of the Catalan people represented by the Catalan parliament”. But he did not promise to obey the Spanish Constitution; nor the statute that regulates
Catalonia’s autonomy. Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis criticised the ceremony, saying it was performed “on the sly, as if Torra were a second-rate president”. Puigdemont, who first fled to Belgium, was detained in Germany in March, after Spain issued a European arrest warrant against him. Madrid wants him extradited to Spain, to try him on charges of rebellion and misuse of public funds, and for staging an independence referendum in Catalonia on 1st October, even though the courts had ruled it unconstitutional. But a German court last month dismissed the extradition request for Puigdemont, on the rebellion allegations, and released him on bail. Spanish prosecutors have since handed over to Germany new information they hope will prove the use of violence, to justify the rebellion charge, as well as their extradition request.

Spanish companies are bitten by Brexit
A container terminal at the port of Algeciras
SPANISH exports are already being damaged by Brexit, as shown by the country’s 2017 trading figures with the UK, which dropped for the first time in five years. Sales of Spanish products to Britain fell 6% last year, while trade with the European Union grew 8% in the same period, according to the latest Bank of Spain report. The number of companies exporting to the UK also dropped by 0.8%, read the report, which is more than other countries. Some 7% of all of Spanish exporting firms trade with the UK, said
the Secretary of Commerce, and 25% of the 11,695 Spanish trading companies do business with the UK. But, said the Bank of Spain: “These entities are the most vulnerable to Brexit.” Around 85% of all firms trading with the UK are small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs), and the bulk of sales is actually carried out by large firms. This offers Brexit followers some hope, because these companies, said the Bank, “are, on average, bigger, more productive and more geographically-diversified, than those exporting to the main countries “within the monetary union”. It added that this could help absorb some of the Brexit effect.
Desperate driver drove against traffic on TF-2
THE Guardia Civil detained a 60-year-old man for driving erratically in the opposite direction on the main ring road between Las Chumbres and Santa Maria del Mar (TF2), in the North of Tenerife. The crazy driver caused three accidents before being diverted by the police, and his motor madness began at 7.30pm on Monday evening. Witnesses report seeing him driving his 4x4 north-bound, towards La Laguna, on a South-bound lane, They said they saw one motorist attempting to dodge the maniac, only to collide with the central reservation, near Los Alisios, to avoid a head-on crash. Subsequently, another two vehicles
crashed into each other, to avoid colliding with the 4x4. And, further up the road, the big car scraped past another vehicle as the police were in the process of stopping him. Officers finally managed to intercept the motor by cornering it on to the hard shoulder, where they lost no time in handcuffing and arresting the man. Fortunately, no one was hurt during the frenzy, and the emergency team, who had been summoned, had only to assist one lady, who suffered a panic attack in the chaos. The errant driver is in police custody, and officers are Investigating why he drove in such an erratic, dangerous manner.

Terrorist fanatics hit rock-bottom!
ISIS fanatics have, horrifically, threatened to behead Spain’s superstar footballers Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo at next month’s World Cup in Russia. They have used a series of distressing posters, and one photo-shopped image shows the Barcelona and Real Madrid stars being pinned down by jihadists, armed with knives, on a packed stadium’s pitch. The caption, “Your blood
will fill the ground”, depicts the world’s two best footballers in agony. A second mocked-up image shows an extremist walking into a stadium filled with thousands of fans, carrying what appears to be a small bomb in his hand. Above the scene, a chilling message reads: “Islamic State - Fifa World Cup Russia 2018 - Victory will be ours.” Both of the sickening posters, released by a proISIS group, brandish the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia logo. It follows threats by Islamic extremists, earlier
this year, about the tournament, which begins next month, and this is not the first time Barcelona superstar Messi has been the target. Some months ago, an image was released of the Argentine striker in an orange, prisoner-style jumpsuit, handcuffed and kneeling in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium pitch, while an extremist holds him down. Hundreds of thousands of tourists are anticipated to be staying in St Petersburg throughout the tournament, which starts on 14th June and continues for a month.

No address safe for these tax fraudsters SPANISH authorities, who are cracking down on tax cheats registering in Gibraltar but living on the Costa del Sol, have recouped 20 million euros for the country’s coffers. Tax agencies have exposed 160 duty-dodgers in recent operations, reclaiming an average of 125,000 euros each in unpaid duties. The free-riding foreigners were said to be living in luxurious residences on the Costa del Sol, yet they were registered on The Rock to avoid paying income and capital-gains tax. Some, believe it or not, hadn’t even paid road tax
for their flashy sports cars! Their wealth is concealed by a complex web of offshore societies in Gibraltar. The slippery manoeuvres meant the tax evaders avoided punishment, until 2013, when the Spanish authorities began to step up their game. Some of the most extreme evaders are now being prosecuted in Malaga and Cadiz courts, according to a report from Andalucia’s tax agency, which is the body behind recent operations. The British fiscal colony is said to rob Spain of one billion euros per year in tax revenues.

Political uncertainties help GBP/EUR stand firm By Carol schleisman at currencies direct
STAYING on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for, over the next couple of weeks. While the pound has been struggling against a number of the majors in recent weeks, the British currency has proven resilient against the euro. GBP/EUR has climbed from 1.13 to 1.14 over the last two weeks, and EUR/GBP has fallen from 0.88 to 0.87. Meanwhile, the US dollar’s continued strength has seen GBP/USD fall from 1.35 to 1.34, and EUR/USD from 1.19 to 1.17. For the pound, the last couple of weeks have been filled with mixed data, conflicting Brexit reports and dashed hopes for a near-term rate hike from the Bank of England (BoE).
By mariano zunino siri
Last week, Brexit speculation flared up, thanks to reports that the UK government was planning to keep Britain in an EU customs union, post-Brexit. However, Prime Minister Theresa May was quick to play down the reports, limiting demand for the pound. Sterling was able to hold gains against a weaker euro, as Eurozone markets became anxious about the possibility of an anti-euro, populist coalition taking power in Italy. The euro also
struggled in the face of US dollar strength. Over the weekend, investors became even more bullish on the US dollar, thanks to reports that the first round of US-China trade negotiations had ended optimistically. Pound investors are awaiting major UK ecostats, due later in the week, before making any big moves on the currency. Meanwhile, the euro is still under pressure, thanks to Italian political uncertainties.
Judge disagrees with the Supreme Court
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
I HAVE referred to the recent Supreme Court ruling, previously, that mortgage taxes must be paid by the bank, following its 15th March judgement. Technically, it refers to Transfer Tax and Stamp Duty, while other costs are to be divided between client and bank. Despite this ruling, however, one Instance Court recently reversed this argument, and, after cancelling the distribution of expenses as “abusive”, decided that the BBVA bank must refund the client the entire sum paid out for the tax. It calls our attention to the judge’s interpretation
This has left the US dollar as the dominant force in the currency market. These trends with the euro and US dollar are likely to continue for most of the coming week, as investors anticipate the possibility of Italian populist parties attempting to formally form a government. Due to Brexit uncertainties in Britain, and Italian political uncertainties, the pound and euro may both see limited strength, even if upcoming data impresses.
Major UK inflation and retail data this week could boost Bank of England (BoE) interest-rate hike bets and the pound, while euro trade may react to this week’s Eurozone PMI data, and next week’s Eurozone inflation projections. It would take a lot for the US dollar to reverse its recent rally. A slew of underwhelming US data could knock the currency and give the euro a bit of breathing room, so keep an eye out on this week’s Fed news, and next week’s US growth and employment stats. of the initial Supreme Court ruling. According to his “humble opinion”, the question is not whether the client is or is not a “taxpayer”, but, whether or not he is enforced to pay
such taxes, because “this is clear”. The important issue, he warns, is to see whether the clause in which the payment of the tax, and other expenses imposed,
is abusive or not. The Supreme Court’s March judgement established that this type of clause, in which all costs are imposed on the client, suggest an imbalance between the rights and obligations of the parties to the contract, and should be labelled as abusive. But, afterwards, and with regard to the distribution of the same sum that each one had to pay, he distinguished between notary, registry and administrative expenses, which, undoubtedly, had to be paid by the bank. And, he said, taxes, indicating expressly that those generated by the constitution of the loan, had to be paid by the client. The judge, with his interpretation of what had already been said in the judgement of the Supreme Court, considered that, in this specific case, the imposition of expenses, including the payment of
the tax, was abusive, and, therefore, the clause should be declared null and void. This means that the controversial clause disappears from the contract. It is considered “not written” and is taken away. In practice, this means that the clause does not exist, so the consumer is back where he started, immediately before his signature, having to return all the sums paid. The judgement will, surely, be appealed by the bank, and the new decision will be taken by the High Court, which will be in charge of studying the new interpretation of the Supreme Court resolution. It will be a hard decision, because the backgrounds of the First Instance are very consistent. We will see what happens. In another vein, the European Court is, shortly, expecting to rule in relation to the “early expiration date”.

Peter Kay’s Car Share: The Finale
Monday 28th May, BBC1, 22.00
Car Share viewers were left in dismay last year when Kayleigh finally admitted her true feelings for John and then stepped out of his car and seemingly out of his life for good when he refused to say how he felt. Fans of the show even set up an online petition demanding a conclusion to the series, which gathered over 100,000 signatures. This brand new episode will reveal just what happens next to John and Kayleigh. Will they finally get together? When the show was announced last autumn Peter Kay said: “We were completely overwhelmed by the response and even though we’ve no plans to write a third series we knew we couldn’t end the story there.” On hundred thousand fans would certainly agree. As the Bafta Award-winning Car Share returns to BBC One, Peter Kay and Sian Gibson reprise their roles as John Redmond and Kayleigh Kitson. Forced to commute together in a supermarket car share scheme as they drive to and from work to the sounds of fictional radio station Forever FM.
King Lear Monday 28th May, BBC2, 21.30
Set in the fictional present, the 80 year-old King Lear (Anthony Hopkins) divides his kingdom among his daughters, Goneril (Emma Thompson), Regan (Emily Watson) and Cordelia (Florence Pugh) - according to their affection for him. Cordelia refuses to flatter him, so he banishes her. Having acquired power, Goneril and Regan expel their father from their homes. At the same time, Lear’s prime minister, Gloucester (Jim Broadbent), is betrayed by his son Edmund (John Macmillan) and his other son, Edgar (Andrew Scott), is forced to go into hiding. Lear becomes mad, Gloucester is blinded: both the kingdom and the family descend into chaos and warfare. Adapted and directed by Bafta and Olivier Award-winning director Richard Eyre, King Lear is a powerful and timely exploration of greed, love, power and mortality.
Great Art
Thursday 31st May, ITV1, 22.50
This acclaimed documentary, focussing on the sell-out exhibition at The Royal Academy of Arts, depicts the craft of one of the all-time great artists, the ‘father of modern art’, Edouard Manet. Spanning this enigmatic and, at times, controversial artist’s career Manet gives a fascinating exploration and detailed biography of the momentous painter and his environment in a rapidly changing 19th-century Paris. Presented by Tim Marlow, and with special guests including art historians and contemporary painters, this documentary reveals Manet’s forward-thinking and modern approach to portraiture. Despite Manet’s portraits comprising around half of his artistic output, they have never been explored in a retrospective exhibition. The Royal Acadmey’s landmark show consisted of more than 50 works, including portraits of his most frequent sitter his wife Suzanne Leenhoff and luminaries of the period such as Antonin Proust, Émile Zola and Stéphane Mallarmé. Displaying exclusive behind-the-scenes moments of the exhibition’s preparation as well as a detailed biography of Manet’s life this superbly crafted documentary is not to be missed.

Steve Backshall vs The Monster Mountain cho i c e BBC2, 20.00
Steve Backshall takes on one of the most notorious mountain climbs in the world: the North Face of the Eiger in Switzerland. As he sets out to realise his boyhood dream, Steve knows that it’s the team around him who will make all the difference. Steve’s wife, double Olympic rowing champion Helen Glover, puts him through his paces as he strives to reach peak fitness in the months leading up to the challenge. Leo Houlding, one of Britain’s greatest climbers, partners Steve as they train on Gogarth Cliffs in North Wales. But Steve must be ready mentally as well as physically if he is to achieve his dream of reaching the summit of the Eiger. After months of gruelling physical and mental training in the UK and Swiss Alps, Steve and his elite climbing team are ready to climb the mountain dubbed The Ogre. But they quickly discover that the vertical mile of treacherous rock isn’t the only challenge. Faced with brittle icecovered cliffs, blinding blizzards and deep, biting cold sweeping in with the Beast From The East, Steve finds himself pushed to the very edge of his ability. As a monster storm front moves in, heartbreaking decisions must be made in a race against time to save the expedition.

After thousands applied and hundreds auditioned, the search reaches the live semi-finals. The final 40 acts now perform live in the hope of impressing the judges, as well as winning the all-important public vote. Across the week our Kings and Queens of entertainment, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams will welcome eight acts to the stage to perform for a chance of winning a life changing £250,000 and a spot at this year’s Royal Variety Performance. Each night two acts will go through to the live Grand Final. As well as performances from this year’s acts, a host of guest performers will take to the stage during the results shows as the semi-finalists wait to find out if they are one step closer to being crowned winner of Britain’s Got Talent 2018.

ITV’s award-winning international current affairs series continues with thought-provoking stories from around the world. In this third episode, Martin Geissler is in Vice President Mike Pence’s home state of Indiana to find out just who he is and why this deeply religious family man has stuck by President Trump. Meanwhile Richard Pallot is in Norway, where half of new car sales are electric, to discover what lessons we can learn in the UK. And Neil Connery bears witness to the final days of the ancient Turkish city of Hasankeyf, which is set to be flooded under 60 meters of water.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke - heat 6
TENERIFE Loves Karaoke, sponsored by Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, is a fun competition, open to anyone over the age of 13 who complies with the terms, conditions and rules, posted on www.oasisfm.com.
The prizes available for the winner of the 2018 competition are 1,000 euros in cash, a chance to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a week’s allinclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to arrange a portfolio, showcase and the chance for a career in entertainment. This week, we headed back to a real favourite of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, The Palms Pool Bar in Golf del Sur, for the sixth heat. The Palms have always produced a great night; a great atmosphere for the contestants to perform in, and great singers with a big stage to perform on! This year, every heat so far has been full, with not a seat to be had. The Palms Pool Bar was no exception, with a full house and a full card of singers. Gordon Slayney, the host for the night, got proceedings underway after his initial opening song, and outlined the voting and what the judges were looking for. He also announced what prizes were available for the night’s winners, as well
Accion del Sol News A FEW weeks ago, a lovely couple, holidaying in Tenerife, found a dog abandoned on the streets of Arona. They called the police, and the dog was collected by Protection Civil and taken to our refuge. The couple later visited to see how the dog was recovering. They fell in love with him, and decided to adopt him. They contacted an English company in Kent, who collect the dog at a later date, after the legal 21 days had passed. We organised all the necessary treatments and paperwork for the dog to travel, and he was
as the overall winner. Clive was Tenerife Loves Karaoke’s first singer of the night. He is a veteran of this event, and opened the competition with The Ugly Bug Ball by Burl Ives. He certainly entertained the crowd, not just with his singing ability, but also his dance moves. This certainly got the crowd going, and set them up for the night. Following Clive was the Rihanna number Stay, performed brilliantly by Sara. Next was Craig, singing Special Brew by Bad Manners, and you could not have got a more varied opening if you’d planned it! Jodie, who entered a few weeks ago, sang the beautiful song Dream a Little Dream of Me by Mama Cass, and the crowd loved it. Liam was next up on stage, and he entertained with a version
of Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry. This was followed by a Liza Minnelli number Mein Herr, by the one and only Muriel, whose repertoire of songs seemed endless. She performed brilliantly, and it was then the turn of Thomas, taking on a big number by Harry Styles - Sign of the Times. This produced the first standing ovation of the night. Taking us up to the break was Denise, with a lovely version of the 1963 Brenda Lee song, Losing You. During the break, the crowd was treated to a couple of songs from the Ska Man himself, Nigel Walker, and Gordon even showed everyone just how good he was at dancing! The second half got underway with Gary, who belted out Let’s Stick Together by Brian Ferry. Then AZ took to the
stage to sing Over the Rainbow, followed by Ferg performing a great David Essex song, Hold Me Close. Rene sang her heart out with Elvis’ Can’t Help Falling in Love, and Janet, another TLK favourite, sang Lionel Richie’s Hello. We were now left with two remaining singers. Malcolm sang and got the entire crowd up on their feet with his version of 500 Miles, and Joseph sang Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You, to the crowd’s delight. The whole place stood up and cheered. What a way to finish! After a short break, the judges confirmed that Joseph, Jodi, Thomas and Gary would be going into the sing-off. All four took to the stage and placed their second-song choices, and Gary got things going with You Can Leave Your Hat On. Jodi performed
Chasing Cars, followed by Joseph belting out Unchanged Melody. Lastly, Thomas wrapped it up with Different Corner. What four great performances they were! It was confirmed that Joseph and Thomas would be going into this year’s semi-finals. Both received their heat trophies, and meal vouchers from this year’s sponsor, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. Everyone who participated in this heat was brilliant, and all those who came to watch had a fun-filled night. Tenerife Loves Karaoke would like to thank the entrants at The Palms Pool Bar, the owners and staff who made this, again, another memorable heat, and our sponsor, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. There are only four heats left this year, the next one being on Saturday, 2nd June at Clouseau’s Bar, Palm Mar. If you would like to enter, to be in with a chance of winning a cash prize of 1,000 euros, performing at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a week’s all-inclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to arrange a portfolio and showcase for you, and the chance for a career in entertainment, then call 822 14 15 17, or you can register, directly, at the venue. Rules are posted on www. oasisfm.com and terms and conditions apply. Don’t forget - you have to sing it, to win it!
A happy ending!

Helping Hands AARON, a 12-year-old boy, has been fighting a daily battle against Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) for the past seven years.
It is a muscle-wasting disease, with no known cure, and it affects boys, mainly. That’s because the body does not produce dystrophin, a large protein which is vital to maintain muscle, and slows the onset of rapid muscle loss. Over the years, Aaron has been on high doses of corticosteroids, which, basically, treat inflammatory and allergic diseases. But the side-effects of his medication have given him full-blown osteoporosis and hypertension, usually associated with ageing people. This has caused his poor little body to be classed as morbidly obese, and his bones are extremely fragile. In the last year alone, Aaron has suffered a fractured spine and

three crushed vertebrae, then a broken femur, which required an operation to have two rods inserted from the knee, to near the hip. The brave youngster had to wait seven months before the rods could be removed, and surgeons still do not know whether Aaron will walk again. Only time, and as much
physio as his body can cope with, will tell. He has recently been fitted with wrist and hand braces to wear at nighttime, as his muscles waste. Surgery is sometimes an option, to try to maintain a good body posture. But Aaron is in stage four of the five stages of Duchenne’s. The heart and lungs are
also classified as being muscles, and their failure to function would leave him at stage five. And because he has a low immune system, again through steroids, the slightest cold could be life-threatening. Thankfully, his lungs are good right now, but the hypertension is a constant concern, and his family live their lives, day to day, keeping Aaron as positive as themselves. After learning about Aaron’s story on Facebook, children’s charity Helping Hands in Tenerife contacted the family, offering its help in any way possible. His parents need to adapt their home to make it suitable for his
wheelchair access, so the charity is helping to fund the work. Pueblo Torviscas, which runs self-catering holiday apartments, has kindly donated a fournight break for Aaron and his family to enjoy time together. The company’s Morten and Deborah, said: “This young boy has had, and is going through, such a tough time, and a little break will be so special for him and his lovely family, who watch him every day in pain.” Darren Chamberlain, a long-distance runner and sports-shop owner, who has also fallen under Aaron’s spell, will be tackling the 66km
Tenerife Blue Trail on 9th June with a double ambition. “What Liz does for the charity is amazing,” he said. “And she has given me the motivation, every step of this run, to raise as much as I can for Aaron, which will, hopefully, get me over the finishing line.” Darren added: “If people want to follow my progress, I’m blogging on www.giftthesport. com/blog, and also on my Facebook Giftthesport.” If you wish to make donations to Darren, on behalf of Aaron, here is the link: https://www.gofundme. com/aaron-tylersbattle-against-dmd

maintenance
AS the full heat of Summer approaches, it’s time to turn your attention to protecting your home from the powerful sun, and getting the best use out of your property’s exterior areas. We all love the good weather, and, for many of us, it’s the reason we chose to live on the island, but the fullon sun in the summer months can also be damaging, so we need to control and restrict it, where necessary. Whilst you might seek the sun when you are sunbathing or using the pool, you probably want your home to be cool when you return. Sun awnings or blinds are an excellent investment for any home that is subject to the full force of the sun. They are not just for putting patios or outside areas in the
shade; by extending them out, the direct sun can be kept off your windows as well, protecting furniture, flooring and personal effects. A good blind can help reduce your indoor temperatures by up to 20 degrees, saving on air-conditioning, or keeping your home more comfortable. As with many items, it’s worth avoiding cheap options which may only last a year or two, as this then becomes a false economy. A good, solid, blind mechanism is essential, and it must be fitted properly by a professional, because there is a fair bit of pressure on the fixings when the blind is fully extended. The material should be rain-and-sun resistant, and, providing you follow these guidelines, you should get 5-10 years in the shade. If you already have the framework, but the material has been destroyed by the sun, this can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of replacing the whole unit. One word of warning: if you live on a community, ensure that you consult the administrators before fitting, as there may be strict rules about colours and sizes of any
external items you fit to your property. The community statutes are enforceable by law, so ignoring them could be a costly mistake. If you already have a pergola, but suffer with the sun when it’s low in the sky, you could fit roller blinds on the sides which can be deployed when necessary. Alternatively, fit curtains that can be tied back or pulled across when needed. These also add a nice homely touch to your outside areas, giving you additional privacy, but you should use materials that are sun and water resistant, otherwise they won’t last very long. Other methods of keeping the sun out of your property include sun-curtains which block light and heat, which now come in a variety of colours, roller blinds, and films for the windows that reflect the rays. Deco Nuevo will come to your property to measure and bring samples, and provide free, no-obligation quotes on your own doorstep. They will also consult your community on your behalf, so it couldn’t be easier to keep your cool! Contact them on 922 789 729.

One Picassso painting, 25,000 ‘lucky’ owners! A “LATE-ERA” Picasso painting was bought online by 25,000 individuals, before being displayed in a Swiss museum.
The 1968 Buste de mousquetaire (pictured) has just been set up at Geneva’s MAMCO museum, six months after its sale, in what the gallery’s director Lionel Bovier calls “very unusual circumstances”. Normally, Bovier said, major works of art were acquired by sole investors, either private individuals or companies, and it is rare for owners to agree for them to go to completely-unknown buyers. But this time, the 58cm x 28.5cm painting was sold off in 40,000 “parts” via Swiss auction site QoQa. It was the first time an online community had acquired a major work of art, and, possibly, set a precedent for future
ownership of famous pieces. This way, small investors can buy shares in a work of art, and it enables the piece itself to “connect with the community”, says QoQa founder Pascal Meyer. Each of the 40,000 “chunks” of the Picasso was on sale for 50 Swiss francs (41.83 euros), and some buyers purchased two or more “chunks”, making a total of 25,000 owners… and a final total sale price of 1.67m
euros, or 2m Swiss francs. Each of the owners has been given a letter confirming his/her investment, and a card allowing all of them free entry into the MAMCO to view “their” painting for the next six months. After that, it will move to another location, to be agreed by the 25,000 owners. They will then receive a free entry pass to whichever museum displays it. Viviane Reybier, head of
MAMCO’s institutional communication, says the museum has “obviously” verified that the painting is authentic, and adds that it is recorded in the so-called “Zervos Catalogue”, which is the register compiled by Christian Zervos, of the Málaga-born painter’s works, which is taken as the main point of reference. Buste de mousquetaire is an example of one of Pablo Picasso’s later works, in which he returned to the interests of his youth, based heavily on musketeers and bull-fighters. Although it is the first online community acquisition, the Buste de mousquetaire is not the first collective purchase of an artwork, or even a Picasso! Back in 1967, the Swiss city of Basel held a referendum on whether to increase taxes to enable it to buy two major Picasso works, which would be public property. The majority of residents voted in favour, and a highly-
appreciative Picasso gave a number of his paintings to “the young people of Basel”. These are now part of a temporary exhibition at the MAMCO on Picasso, which includes the Buste de mousquetaire. Bovier says both collective purchases involved people “buying something in the knowledge it would never truly belong to them personally”, but with the intention of “being able to see and relate to” the work. To enable the buyers to relate to the Buste de mousquetaire, projections around the picture show a list of their names, as well as pictures visitors have taken of it and posted on social media. A webcam has been set up so the painting’s owners can see what is happening in the gallery hall, where it is on display. Conservation demonstrations, conferences and workshops are also on the cards to get the owners “involved” in their purchase.

CD Tenerife review
VICTORY against third-placed Sporting Gijon, overdue but most welcome, had plenty of positives. And it should help dispel doubts about offering shortterm coach Etxeberria the reins for next season. Players looked as though they were trying to impress the boss, and the 8,123 fans, and Tenerife actually made promotion-chasing Gijon appear pretty ordinary. After the previous week’s experimental, starting lineup, it was back to a stronger, more-recognisable side. Juan Villar made a second successive start, a rarity for the injury-prone striker, and he looked full of running, getting into a good early position before shooting wide. The big plus was having creative midfielder Bryan Acosta on top form. His skills have been a highlight of the season, but he also showed an amazing work-rate in this game, battling for every ball, and covering every blade of grass. That determination enabled the Honduras player to get behind the Gijon defence, and, though a sliced shot didn’t trouble the keeper, it certainly served notice of a positive Tenerife performance. Luis Perez was missing at right-back because of a tonsil abscess, which gave the

experienced Raul Camara a run-out, and he was his usual, tenacious self. Tenerife were working well for each other, with Aveldaño defending stoutly, and Alex Mula, restored to the team for his speedy wing runs, demonstrating his appetite for hard work when tracking back to rob Jony, as he tried to threaten the home side. Sporting tried to put pressure on Tenerife, and Sergio Alvarez managed a rare shot on Dani Hernandez, but the home keeper took the ball comfortably. Santos beat Aveldaño and set up a Garcia shot that cleared the bar. And there was a let-off when Carmona nearly scored for Gijon after Alberto failed to clear. Dani
came to the rescue with a boot, and then a hand, to repel the ball at the second attempt. The home keeper showed his true quality a few minutes later, by pouncing on an awkward, high ball into the box, as Gijon players raced in to make it theirs. The second half saw Tenerife up their game, and, with Acosta buzzing and Casadesus being more forceful, Gijon were on the back foot. Montoro had to scramble away a Juan Villar atempt, and Casadesus got in a strong header which Marino had to tip away from the home net, while Alex Mula was causing havoc down the left wing. Bryan Acosta thought he
was on for a clear goal, but the ref called offside, correctly, and, in all, he had an impressive game, letting the play flow where possible, and showing discretion rather than waving cards like confetti. It was good to see Tenerife on the right path again, even though the promotion flame is all but extinguished. But they appreciate that there’s still pride to maintain. Mula ran rings around three Gijon defenders, but his end product wasn’t quite as good, because a weak shot hardly kept the keeper in work. Tenerife could almost smell a victory and pushed on. Alberto rose for a powerful header, but Marino leapt just
that bit higher and made a clean take to snuff out the chance. Then Raul Camara got some power out of his old legs to sling in a teasing cross, which Acosta could only direct into the keeper’s hands. Malbasic, who came on for Juan Villar, again looked sprightly. The Serbian, who hasn’t quite scaled the heights this season, set about showing that he might have more to offer next season. But the goal was proving elusive, and a penalty shout for an Alex Perez tackle that upended Acosta was met with stony silence from the ref. There was a determined look about Malbasic, his powerful shot deflecting off a defender and on to the bar, as Gijon rode their luck. There was a mixed reception for La-Laguna-born striker Nano when he came on for Gijon. Nano left Tenerife for Premier Division Elche early last season, just hours before a home game. But the fans were much more open in praising Acosta as he was subbed for Juan Carlos Real, the midfielder deserving the ovation he received richly. With 10 minutes left, a goal was needed to top off a solid performance, and Malbasic obliged as Tenerife charged again. Juan Carlos squared the ball to Malbasic, and his shot was perfect, nestling in the bottom corner of the net. Home captain Suso had a relatively-quiet time after coming off the bench earlier in the second half. But he showed his two sides in the final minutes. A good run down the right saw his cross nearly beat the leaping keeper, and he then had a heated exchange with Jony on the touchline. Both were booked, and both might have been dismissed, but for the referee’s common sense. Yet it was a pleasing night all round for Tenerife, with just two games left to play. Next up is Cadiz, away on Sunday at 7.30pm.

Women’s football
Heads they win, in quest for Cup DRAMA, controversy, and finally salvation saw Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife through to the Queen’s Cup semi-final after Wednesday night’s 2-1 home win. But they were mighty glad to have the cushion of the 1-0 away leg win in Real Betis. That came, courtesy of a 78th-minute header by Ana Gonzalez, and all was set fair for the San Isidro home leg. Cristina Martin-Prieto always has plenty of drive, with a combative edge, and, in the opening minute, she sped down the right and tested visiting keeper Miriam Lopez, but the shot lacked power. The pressure was on Betis to claw their way back into the tie, and both Pry and Paula sounded warnings when they broke through the home defence. But Pili Gonzalez was ready for them with two comfortable stops. After nine minutes, MartinPrieto cut in from the left wing and set the ball up nicely for a fierce shot, tipped away by Lopez. But Sara Tui was on hand with a header just inside the post, to increase the aggregate advantage. It could have easily been 2-0 a few minutes later, as Ana Gonzalez unleashed a rocket
from just inside the halfway line, only for Lopez to touch the ball wide. Betis, who looked nervous at the back, were better going forward, and Rosa Marquez burst through, only to be crowded out by the home defence. Then Bea Parra had a half-chance, which was taken with ease by Pili. Lopez had already seen plenty of the ball, when Eva Llamas nearly caught her out with a long free-kick. And the Betis keeper spilled the shot before getting the ball in her grasp. Granadilla looked comfortable at this stage, Pisco testing the visitors down the right, and Martin-Prieto tormenting them on the left. Rosa Marquez, the driving force that kept Betis’ hopes alive, tried to keep prompting attacks from deep in her own half, but only with limited success. It looked a steep road back
for Betis, but they came out for the second half with renewed fire. Laura Gonzalez showed them the route to the home goal, even if her shot was lacking a punch. A second home goal would have taken the fight out of the visitors, and they had a close call when Ana Gonzalez cut inside the away defence and slipped the ball to Martin-Prieto. It was a tight angle, but the striker got a shot in, only for the ball to bounce off a post. Betis took inspiration from the let-off, and Paula Moreno got through on the Granadilla goal twice in a minute, and had two decent attempts. Home sub Kokito added some pace to the attack, linking up with MartinPrieto, who was denied by the keeper’s legs. She then combined with Llamas and Estella before being pushed wide for a
throw-in. The equaliser came from a defensive mix up, keeper Pili racing out as a cross came in. Cindy Garcia got her head to the ball but could only direct it down to Paula Moreno, with the empty goal in front of her. A few minutes later, a pass found Moreno out wide. She shot, promptly, and Estella’s attempt to clear the ball just helped it in the net. However, a late offside call from the ref, which looked harsh, denied the goal, and no wonder Betis were furious. Now, though, they fancied their chances of at least forcing the tie to extra-time, and pressed forward. Virginia was un-marked and should have done better with her shot, rather than fire directly at Pili. And Yivi launched a curling shot over the defence and into the box
Pili was unsighted until it was nearly on her, but she made a wonderful, diving save. Rosa had her go at testing Pili, and was denied when the ball was punched clear. It was a nervy ending as the game moved into four minutes of time added on. Granadilla relieved the pressure, and took advantage by breaking forward and winning a corner. Ayano Dozomo floated the ball across, and Patri Gavira timed her jump well, heading the ball into the back of the net. Granadilla now face Atletico Madrid in the semifinal tomorrow (Saturday) at Reus, on the mainland. If all goes well, they can be contesting the Copa del Reina Final next Saturday (2nd June) at Merida, in Madrid.
EXTRA-TIME TRIATHLON fever gripped El Medano last Sunday morning as competitors took part in a 1.5-km swim around the bay, a 40-km bike ride, and, finally, a 10km run. It was contested keenly by 340 athletes, and the 300-strong field of men was headed by Ricardo Hernandez, who whizzed round in a time of 1hr. 48mins. 3secs. The 40 ladies kept up a hot pace, too, with Delioma Gonzalez winning in 2.03.39. THERE was European glory for Granadilla Tenerife footballer Paola Hernandez. She was a key part of the Spain team who won the European Under-17 Championship in Lithuania last weekend, with a 2-0 final win over Germany. Looks like a bright future for women’s football in Tenerife.

Champ Chloe’s home date MORE than 40 water-based sports and activities will be on offer at the annual Fenautica event, in Marina del Sur, Las Galletas, next weekend (2nd3rd June). World surfski champion Chloe Bunnett will be taking part to explain this lesser-known sport.
Surfskis, narrow, speedy, and more manoeuvrable than kayaks, were used, originally, for life-saving at sea around Australia. But they are now a huge racing favourite with thrillseekers. Chloe was born in South Africa in 1978, and, after travelling the world, she settled in Bournemouth where she became hooked on surfski. After moving to Tenerife, she built up her experience
and represented Spain. And she was crowned Ocean Racing Surfski world champ in Hong Kong last year. She will be one of many experienced enthusiasts, passing on their knowledge of water sports during the two-day spree. There will also be opportunities to try out many of the sea-based activities, and to enjoy the music and promotional stalls.

IBEROSTAR are looking good for eighth place in the league, and the La-Laguna-based side can just about count on their place in the play-off championship, thanks to this home win. After losing the first quarter 20-18, Tenerife fought back well to take the other quarters 11-7, 25-24, and 19-18. Mateusz Ponitka, who led the charge with a 23-point haul, was well-supported by Kotios Vasileiadis (18 pts). The final league game was last night (Thursday) at Real Betis, and victory would have confirmed their play-off spot.

T E N E R I F E B, disciplined and confident, brought back a goal-less draw from Inter Madrid in the away leg of their promotion final. The home leg, on Sunday at 11am, was scheduled originally for the Javier Perez training complex, near
the north airport. But it soon became clear that interest would outstrip the 2,000 crowd limit. Now, the senior team’s Heliodoro Stadium can offer a fitting stage for the under-23 side to chase their dream, and TV Canaria will be showing the game live. But both sides missed excellent chances, and Brian Martin could have had a Tenerife hat-trick. Madrid
wasted three close headers, all going over the bar. But keeper Angel Galvan, confident of snuffing them out if on-target, was commanding throughout, and cleared several threats with authority. The stalemate gives Tenerife a perfect opportunity of clinching a place in the Segunda B league next season, just one league behind the senior side.
