1st June - 7th June 2018

THE 2018 series of pharmacy robberies in Tenerife continued early last Saturday, when two people forced their way into a new chemist’s shop in Adeje and by-passed the alarm, which was connected to a complicated security system. Continued on Page 3

Spain-Africa tunnel is back on the cards A PROJECT to build an underwater tunnel, connecting Spain and Africa, which was understood to have been set aside, is back on, say experts. A Spanish Government committee, which is exploring the possibility, says it is still viable, despite construction challenges. The submarine tunnel, some 38km in length, and 475 metres below sea level, would be the first land-link between Africa and Europe. Rafael Garcia-Monge Fernandez, President of the Spanish Society of Studies for Fixed Communication through the Strait of Gibraltar SA (SECEGSA), told an Algeciras press conference that the project was going ahead. Previous studies questioned its feasibility, but Herrenknecht, the largest tunnel-construction company in the world, carried out a new assessment with the University of Zurich, which concluded that the tunnel was possible. A tailor-made prototype of a tunnel-borer, costing 32 million euros, will be the next step. Spain and Morocco both want the tunnel, but at an estimated cost of eight billion euros, the EU would have to provide serious funding. High-speed trains through the tunnel would make cargo journeys between Madrid and Marrakech up to three times shorter. The tunnel could also be used to carry solar energy, from the Sahara to Europe.

‘Salt’ weekend is such a colourful sight to see THE centre of Adeje will be taken over this weekend by Corpus Christi, one of the borough’s oldest celebrations. Some 445 sacks of seasalt will be coloured and used to make carpets along the full length of the town’s Calle Grande, and the Calle Corpus Christi, from tomorrow afternoon (Saturday). Culture Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera said: “For many years, the making of these car-

pets has been a meeting point for the people of Adeje, as an exercise in social harmony. “Corpus Christi, as well as being a religious ceremony, allows us meet with people from other walks of life in the town. “We all work together on these carpets, sharing ideas, suggestions and stories, in addition to building the creative richness of the community.” Over 11,000 kilos of seasalt will cover 330 metres of road in the two

streets. And among the many groups and associations taking part will be the Hermandad del Santísimo; Cáritas; Focus international residents’ group; Children from first communion and confirmation classes; Adeje volunteer firefighters, and children from activity groups in Fañabe, Los Olivos and Armeñime. It will be a real treat in the Calle Grande tomorrow, from 5pm, watching these carpets being made.

New Adeje chemist burgled It meant, obviously, that they could not be identified, on camera, anyway, and the pair got away with 300 euros, as well as the cash register, from the premises on the San Sebastian road, near the motorway. The scenario is identical to the robbery of the last chemist, also in Adeje, on the main street of Calle Grande. That took place at the end of February, when thieves had a type of

technology which enabled them to disarm the alarm system. It gave them an easy passage, in and out of the building, and allowed them to escape with around 900 euros in cash and a computer, along with several pharmaceutical drugs. On this occasion, however, Guardia Civil officers were surprised to discover that the empty cash register, stolen hours earlier, was found

near a main road in Granadilla’s Atogo village. But they are still searching for the two thieves, as well as continuing their investigation into the break-in. It follows a string of Tenerife pharmacy robberies this year, which appear to be confounding police forces and Guardia Civil officers, who are appealing for information about the current robbery, and the spate of others.

There must be dialogue, says vital tourist group MAYORS from the five boroughs of the AMTC (Association of Canarian Tourism Municipalities, gathered for a roundtable discussion last week at Arona’s “Futurismo Canarian 2018” conference.

Also at the table were Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, the regional deputy tourism minister, and the Pájara Mayor, pending membership. Discussion focused on challenges and opportunities for Canarian tourism boroughs, and the meeting examined relevant data from each area, discussing “the definition of a development model, for such an important sector in the archipelago”. The boroughs of Adeje, Arona, Guía de Isora, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Mogán and Pájara, earn 30% of the GDP derived from tourism, between them, and more in secondary income. Arona Mayor José Julian Mena said: “We are welcoming 7.8 million tourists annually… over 65 million overnights, making us a very important tourism resource at European level. “But the monies we receive for public infrastructure are not, in any way, equal. The historical investment deficit, and bad planning, is generating serious problems in mobility. And, in the end, we will lose the competitive edge. “We cannot continue patching up the problems, such as the South motorway, the secondary

“We cannot continue patching up the problems, such as the South motorway, the secondary roads, the airport or Los Cristianos port.” roads, the airport or Los Cristianos port.” The Association Presidents, and Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, alongside the other mayors, detailed actions they are taking on behalf of the AMTC, including a full response to the proposed decree on holiday rentals. Fraga said: “We believe there are some contradictions in the proposed decree, and we have to be heard on this sensitive matter. We will insist on regulations, that are intelligentlydesigned, to deal with the

problem and turn it into an opportunity.” The influential body will be looking for meetings with the regional government to talk about the law, dealing with the co-ordination of local police forces, and other matters which affect their borough members directly. The mayors also reiterated that, among the principal difficulties identified in tourism destinations, were mobility, sustainability, necessarylanguage training, financing adapted to the boroughs and investment in public in-

Death probe of baby, aged just five months

THE death of a fivemonth-old baby, found in a house in La Matanza de Acentejo, in the north-east of Tenerife, is being investigated by the Guardia Civil. Juan Carlos Ubero, Chief Commander of Puerto de la Cruz Guardia

Civil, revealed that an emergency call had been made, claiming that a baby was having some problems. Guardia officers, along with two ambulances, were sent to the premises, but the infant was dead when they arrived. The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, and the baby girl’s 20-year-old father, hasn’t been seen since.

This, obviously, is creating some concern among family members, as well as with Guardia officers. Ubero said they were looking for the father, to rule out his possible connection with the baby’s death. He added that a complete autopsy, to be carried out on Monday, was needed to determine how the baby died.

frastructures. Pájara Mayor Rafael Perdomo, from the Fuerteventura capital of Las Palmas, brought up the main problems his borough is facing, which were of concern. “These are,” he said, “the transformation of an older destination into one that is competitive on its own merits, and not due to problems with other destinations, as well as improvements in public infrastructures.” He also emphasised the value of an organisation such as the AMTC, in which he is keen to belong. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said he was still unsure about the exact role of the AMTC, because, “they haven’t explained it to us”. But he is happy to advance dialogue between tourism boroughs.

That was agreed by all present, Mogán Mayor Onalia Bueno, adding: “We are the most important boroughs, from a tourism point of view in the Canarias, and we have to be listened to and acknowledged, by Cabildos, the regional government, nationally and at European level. “That’s because we firmly believe we must have an active role in decisions affecting the sector.” Adeje Mayor Fraga added: “There is a lack of real dialogue, when we are being listened to, but we also have particular issues which need to be resolved.” He stressed that tourism, and the benefits arising from the sector, need to be seen to benefit the people involved, and must also improve the quality of life of those in the sector.

Party woman went on a thieving spree

NATIONAL Police have arrested a 27-yearold Spanish woman, who stole various technological items during a friend’s birthday party last month.

While everyone was enjoying the party, she was searching the bags and pockets of other guests, gathering various mobiles and tablets. She was suddenly surprised by another woman and told her she was going out to buy some tobacco. But when the other guest confronted her, the thief assaulted her before fleeing. The police, who were informed, found her quickly, and, after identifying her, discovered that she’d had 19 charges against her for similar offences. All the stolen items were returned to the rightful owners, and she is now being held in police custody, awaiting a court hearing.

Rajoy under huge pressure to resign A VOTE of no-confidence for Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy will be held today (Friday), following the PSOE’s motion against the Partido Popular leader, which was debated in Congress yesterday. Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez will be the proposed replacement candidate for Prime Minister, having lodged a “no-confidence” motion against Rajoy. It came in response to Rajoy’s reigning PP party being found guilty of benefiting, financially, from a multi-million-euro corruption scandal, dating back to the 1980s. Rajoy’s PP party has been plagued with a string of corruption cases in recent

months. And last week saw, mostly, PP leaders involved in the Gurtel corruption ring convicted of a combined 351 years behind bars. However, the National Court says it has been proven that the right-wing party had an “off-therecord” accounting system to record cash bribes received from businesses, in exchange for lucrative public-works contracts. The cash was distributed among top-flight party members, and used to fund electoral campaigns. But it was not declared to the tax authorities. Four of the PP’s five treasurers, excluding the current one, were known to have been involved, and the most recent, Luis Bárcenas, held up to 48.2m euros in Swiss bank ac-counts to hide it from the public coffers. When a judge ordered the PP to hand in Bárcenas’ computers for investigation, the

party arranged for the hard drives to be wiped first. Bárcenas has been jailed for 33 years, his wife Rosalía Iglesias for 15. Francisco Correa, ringleader of the socalled “Gürtel” corruption racket, went down for 51 years, and several PP councillors and ex-regional ministers were imprisoned for a minimum of four years. Rajoy, party leader from 2004, and current Prime

Ryanair travellers could be facing hectic summer

RYANAIR cabin-crew unions across Europe are threatening to cause chaos for holiday-makers this summer by staging peak-time strikes. Groups from Belgium, Portugal, Italy and Spain are calling for the low-cost airline to stop using Irish labour laws for all their staff. Instead, they want them to adapt to the regulations of each country in which they have a presence.

The company claims that the negotiation process is going well, but Spain’s cabin-crew union Sitcpla, which is the largest group of the four countries, insists that talks are “pointless” because the mediators admit they have legitimate claims. But they have nothing in writing. Union heads were, on Monday, set to agree on whether to call for strikes. But until next month, they will not confirm on which dates the demonstrations are taking place.

Minister since November 2011, has always denied the existence of the “underground” accounts, dubbed “Cashbox B”, and said the party never received any illicit funding. But now the PP has been found guilty, making history because a political party has never before been sentenced for a criminal offence, direct rivals, the PSOE, believes Rajoy

should do the decent thing and resign. Rajoy has no intention of doing so, and, says PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez: “He just wants to be President at all costs.” During a Parliamentary debate last Friday, Rajoy warned that if the PP were to be ousted from office, Spain’s “economic recovery” would be in jeopardy. Opposition parties have questioned this “economic recovery”, given that although unemployment is down from 25% to around 17%, around 95% of workers are on temporary contracts of just a few weeks, earning the minimum wage. Recently, it has transpired that the country’s debt is rising dramatically. But for Sánchez’s no-confidence motion to prosper, it would need the backing of an outright majority, which means 176 out of the 351 MPs.

NEWS IN BRIEF African stabbed in scuffle

1st June - 7th June 2018

Angry holiday-makers force airline to pay up

AN African was seriously injured when stabbed by another man in the stomach with a knife in El Fraile on Tuesday afternoon. It happened at a local cybercafe, when a scuffle broke out inside the premises after an argument, which continued on to the street and led to the stabbing. But the knifeman fled when the Local Police and Guardia Civil arrived, and the cops are still hunting for him. The victim, once stabilised after being treated by a doctor and a nurse, was transferred to Hospiten Sur.

Women run into brick wall

TWO women were seriously injured when their car crashed into a brick wall in El Rosario on Sunday evening. The police and an ambulance answered an emergency call, and the fire brigade were also present at Calle el Sol, in the La Esperanza area, to help rescue one of the women, trapped inside the car. Medics assessed the injuries of both women, and the 38-yearold, who had severe abdominal pains, was transferred immediately to the university hospital in Santa Cruz. Her companion, aged 42, had a nasty head injury and was taken to Candelaria Hospital.

Strawberry man’s sex charge

THE manager of an Andalucian strawberry farm has been arrested, after being accused of sexual abuse and coercion, by a group of his immigrant workers. The 47-year-old is in charge of supervising the workers and arranging their shifts at the farm, in Moguer, Huelva. But three of his workers have come forward to report what they say is months of abuse. There have been repeated reports of labour and sexual exploitation in Huelva’s strawberry fields for years, but only now has an investigation been launched. As complaints have intensified in recent months, Interfresa, based in Huelva, has claimed it is all part of a smear campaign by rivals in other countries. A company spokesman said: “They are taking advantage of information, not yet confirmed by the judicial courts, to favour a campaign that will impact the prestige and important activity of the sector in Huelva.”

A GROUP of holidaymakers are set to receive almost 11,500 euros each, after winning a four-year court battle against budget airline Jet2.

Nick Taylor took on the Leeds-based carrier after 36 passengers walked off a flight, from the Costa del Sol to the UK, in the wake of a security scare. The 43-year-old was returning to Manchester from Malaga with his wife and young son, when a fellow-traveller started behaving oddly. After demanding to enter the cockpit ahead of takeoff, the “agitated” man took photos, including selfies, before breaking his mobile phone’s SIM card, which sparked fears of a terrorist attack. The culprit was quizzed by

police before being allowed to return, which angered passengers, and led to the plane being abandoned by Nick and 35 others. But after he forked out 850 euros for new flights the following day, the low-cost travel firm refused to cover the costs, so 22 of those affected got together to launch a legal case. Nick, from Blackburn, Lancashire, represented the claimants at Burnley County Court, where a judge ruled that Jet2 must pay compensation. Nick told The Sun newspaper: “These big firms think normal people like me don’t have what it takes to see it through. “But it just goes to show that justice can be served, if you keep at it and don’t give up. We just wanted the company, who treated us like morons, to take us seriously.

“We were just normal people, just trying to get our money back, and it’s paid off!” Of his decision to disembark the plane, he added: “It was very unsettling, as we thought that our lives would be in danger if we flew with that man still on board. “There was absolute chaos around us; children crying, people shouting and scuffling. Obviously, we were thinking that it could be some sort of terrorism issue. “And an air hostess was crying, and in distress, which didn’t exactly reassure us. “I couldn’t help but think that if the professionals were scared for their lives, and not happy with that idiot remaining on the plane, then why on earth should we risk it for the sake of around £1,000? So we decided to get off.”

Spanish passport offers a gateway to the world THE Spanish passport is now among the third-mostpowerful in the world, according to Henley & Partners, the Jersey-based global citizenship and residence advisory firm. The company’s annual passport index ranks each

country’s passport, based on how much visa-free travel it grants its holders. And Spain shared third place with Finland, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden and South Korea, all of whom provide visa-free, or visaon-arrival, access to 187 countries. The UK, with 186 destinations, placed joint fourth along-side the US, among others, although its position could be weakened

in the wake of Brexit. Japan maintained its grip on top spot with a record total of 189 destinations, while Germany and Singapore were joint second with 188. The two worst-rated countries were Afghanistan and Iraq, with only 30 countries accessible, visafree, using their passports. This year’s index surveyed 199 countries and their passports’ accessibility to 227 different nations.

Terrorist shoots dead two female officers in Belgium A MAN, suspected of being a terrorist, shot dead two policewomen and a nearby driver on Tuesday in the Belgian city of Liege, after killing another victim the previous night. Sources said the man was Benjamin Herman, a Belgian national whom police knew to have been radicalised in prison. According to reports, two other police officers were also injured, and the gunman took a female cleaner hostage at a school, before being killed by police. Two other police officers were also injured. Herman’s motive is not yet clear. However, police sources in local media have said the man was heard shouting “Allahu Akbar”. “There are elements that point to this being a terrorist act,” said Eric Van Der Sypt, spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office. Belgium Prime Minister Charles Michel, who was following the situation, expressed his support for those affected. Belgian broadcaster RTBF said the gunman was let out from prison on temporary release on Monday, where he had been serving time for drug offences. The station agreed that he had been radicalised in jail. The shooting unfolded late in the morning, near a cafe in the city centre. Prosecutors said the man followed and attacked the officers with a knife, before taking a gun from them and opening fire.

He also shot dead a 22-year-old man, sitting in the passenger seat of a parked car, as he walked in the direction of a nearby school, where, briefly, he took a member of staff hostage, they added. Armed police officers then arrived at the scene and “intervened”, prosecutors added. The attacker began firing at the officers in an attempt to escape, injuring a number of them “around their legs”, before he was shot dead. Footage on social media showed people running to safety as several gunshots rang out, while the schoolchildren were moved to safety. Liege city authorities later tweeted: “The children in the local schools are safe.” Belgium’s Interior Minister, Jan Jambon, said investigators were trying to establish “exactly what happened”, adding: “Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act.” Yet Belgium has remained on alert, following a series of jihadist attacks in the country, and in neighbouring France. A Brussels-based terrorist cell was involved in the 2015 Paris attacks which left 130 people dead in several locations. And Brussels itself saw three suicide bombings in March 2016, with 32 people killed. Both the Paris and Brussels attacks were claimed by the Islamic State-group. Later, in 2016, a man attacked two police officers with machetes while shouting “Allahu Akbar”, before being shot dead.

Shapes of things to come ADEJE Council and the Walk for Life breast cancer foundation are organising a workshop on Posture and Pelvic Floor exercises, with physiotherapist Vanessa Trujillo. The workshop, which is free, will be in the Pink Room in Adeje’s Escuela de Seguridad y Convivencia (School of Security And Social Harmony) on Wednesday, 13th June. with sessions in English (at 5pm) and in Spanish an hour later. Participants should wear comfortable, loose clothes and bring an exercise mat. Caring for your posture during your day-to-day activities will help your pelvic health, too, allowing your pelvic floor to work better, with less chance of poor functions, such as incontinence or a prolapse.

Criminal walk is so arresting! CRIMINALS will soon be identified by the way they walk, say British and Spanish researchers, who are in the final stages of completing technology to expose them, especially at airports. The technology identifies a person’s gait, which can

He was picked up for his “highly political” and antiestablishment lyrics, but was later released. This system should soon be in place at airports, just like finger-printing and eye-scanning technology now in operation. The technique uses pressure pads, built into the floor, and has proved to be around 99.3% accurate at identifying people. Behavioural biometrics, like how you walk, your voice and your signature,

are able to capture unique things about a person’s behaviour and movement. Researchers from the University of Manchester and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid have collected the largest footstep database ever, containing nearly 20,000 footstep signals, from 127 individuals. The study, published in the journal IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence (TPA-

Squatter freed, despite a horrifying axe attack A SQUATTER has been released on bail, despite, it is alleged, trying to kill a British expat pensioner with an axe. The unnamed Moroccan assailant was picked up in a midnight raid after hacking at Michael Devitt, 75, during an argument with two other squatters. Witnesses said the former lorry-driver’s arm was “left dangling” after a savage attack in the Aguadulce village, near Sevilla. “The guy came out of nowhere,” said neighbour Alan McGarva, 70. “He just raised the axe in the air and aimed for his head. There was blood everywhere, and it was horrific.” But, by an incredible stroke of fortune, Mr Devitt was able to block the blow with his

arm, causing it to break from the impact. The attacker, later arrested at a nearby squatter’s home, has been charged and will stand trial next year. “He will face a maximum of just six years for grievous bodily harm,” said Mr McGarva,

a former RAF air-traffic controller. “It’s ridiculous… it was surely attempted murder.” The attack has shocked the British community in the Sierra Sur area of Sevilla province, who are now demanding action be taken against the squatters,

who have lived in homes, illegally, on various private urbanisations, for nearly five years. “It’s just not fair,” added McGarva. “We’ve had five years of hell, and these people are destroying homes and bringing down the price of those owned by everyone else. “Our street has been plagued for years, yet no attempt has been made to rid the village of them by police, or the authorities.”

Did village people invent Coca-Cola? A RURAL Spanish village in Valencia claims that its own brand of soft drink was the forerunner to Coca-Cola. The Aielo de Malferit Council, in Valencia, has sent an official request to the multi-national giant, asking it to allow the town to acknowledge the project, officially, and to “make the village known… nothing more”. Needless to say, there has been no response. But, according to reports, local Aielo men Enrique Ortiz, Ricardo Sanz and Bautista

Aparici opened a distillery and began making KolaCoca, 138 years ago! The area was also famous for making American liquors, but the soft-drink producers had even been given permission by the Queen Regent, Maria Cristina de Austria, to use the Spanish coat of arms on their labels. And, according to rumours passed down the generations, Aparici was the sales representative, who travelled most of the world, promoting the trio’s product. In 1885, allegedly, he travelled to Philadelphia, and, just one year later,

pharmacist Dr John Stith Pemberton had Coca-Cola on the market in Atlanta, Georgia, after launching it, initially, as a patent medicine. Coca-Cola’s basic ingredients were coca leaves, kola nuts and soda water, differing from Kola-Coca only in that Aparici’s soft drink was mixed with fresh water. Juan Mico, the distillery’s current owner, said: “It was a syrup, such as we still make from lemon, grenadine and pineapple.” But while Coca-Cola became the world’s favourite fizzy drink, the Valencianbased soft drink, sadly,

went out of production. It is rumoured that Coca-Cola representatives went to Aielo during the first half of the 20th century, to buy up Kola-Coca. They wanted to market their own product in Spain, but this does appear to be a rumour only, because there is no evidence to prove that this transaction took place. A Coca-Cola spokesman said: “The brand has taken off in such a way that it now belongs to the entire world. “This has happened in other parts of the world, and, for us, it’s a source of pride.”

He claimed that numerous families were squatting in at least six homes in his urbanisation, all of which have been destroyed and boarded up. “The local Spanish are frightened to do anything against these people, and it is just a matter of time before someone gets killed,” he said. Mr McGarva said the incident erupted during an argument over a parking space, when two female squatters asked him to move his car from outside his home, so they could park their van. “They started screaming at me,” he said. “It was nuts.” But the former prison guard, who was also in the RAF for years, agreed to shift his car, while his neighbour, Mr Devitt, tried to calm the situation. But as the argument continued, Mr McGarva’s 72-year-old wife, Avril, noticed a man running up the street with something in his hand. “He just came running at Michael and tried to axe him in the head,” she recalled. Police, accompanied by an ambulance, arrived within 20 minutes, but the axeman had already fled. He is known locally for causing trouble, having moved into an abandoned home last year.

Ugh…who’s for a second cuppa? THEY must be the most obnoxious creatures ever, carrying all sorts of germs as they scurry around from the sewers they inhabit. Yet, believe it or not, some people are actually drinking cockroach milk as a dairy alternative now, and it is said that the product is more nutritious. The milk is derived from “cockroach crystals”, a part of the insect found in its gut. And, according to scientists, these crystals “are like a complete food”, rich in essential amino acids and protein. A researcher in India, at the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, claims the nutritional value of the cockroach product is much higher than other milks. What’s more, apparently, it tastes no different from cow’s milk. Sourced from Australian Pacific

cockroaches, it is said to contain dietary sequences with all the essential amino acids, proteins, fats and sugars, and three times the energy of regular dairy milk. Some cockroaches lay eggs, but the Diploptera Punctata species gives birth to young and feeds them with milk. It is the only species of roach that gives birth to living offspring, as opposed to laying eggs, and produces milk to feed its young. South African company Gourmet Grubb is already

farming cockroaches… and producing milk from the bugs! The product is called “Entomilk” and it is created from sustainably-farmed cockroaches. “One of the most pivotal benefits of Entomilk is that it has a high protein content, and is rich in minerals, such as iron, zinc, and calcium,” says the brand. But it’s hard work. Being insects, it takes as many as 1,000 cockroaches to make just 100gms of milk, says science website Inverse. And it’s not just a case

of attaching a machine to udders and massaging the teats. The University of Iowa’s Dr Barbara Stay maintains: “The only way to milk a cockroach would be to make cultures of yeast, with the genes in it for making this milk.” It won’t surprise you to learn that Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle website, Goop, already lists cockroach milk as an option. “As might be expected, the process of ‘milking’ a cockroach is precise and laborious,” it says.

Welcome to Ibiza - and here is our list of drugs! BRITISH tourists can have drugs delivered, via a WhatsApp “pirate” taxi service, when arriving at Ibiza airport, according to newspaper claims in Spain and the UK. Holiday-makers have also bought drugs over the counter at hotel receptions, who are commissioned by criminal gangs. Sales are arranged over WhatsApp in drug-group chats before travellers arrive, it is reported. Legal taxi drivers say they are fed up with their “pirate” counterparts, who are said to be British, mainly. Tourists who have not arranged to buy drugs are targeted by such drivers, who add them to a WhatsApp group for the future, if they decline. The service, reportedly, also handles sales for those Brits working in Ibiza bars and nightclubs, or as promoters for venues. Sellers, allegedly, post pictures on the WhatsApp groups of the drugs they have on offer. And all messages are deleted once sales are made, according to reports.

A double blow for European chump! A BRITISH drugs kingpin, who went on the run to Spain, has been imprisoned for more than 18 years, after breaking cover to watch Liverpool’s Group stage match against Sevilla in the Champions League. Peter Atherton, found guilty of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs in England and Wales, was jailed for 18 years and nine months, after being held in Andalucian capital Sevilla on a European Arrest Warrant. Liverpool Crown Court heard that he was among the ring-leaders of a Wirralbased gang, who sold 303kg of cocaine, worth more than 10 million euros, across the UK, in just five months. Detectives found his fingerprints on ledgers revealing the movements of the eight-man cabal, whose members will now serve a total of 106 years behind bars. The probe, code-named Operation Wessex, saw investigators swoop to seize a 1.6m-euro stash, inclu-ding more than 9kg of cocaine, 7kg of pure heroin, 10,000 MDMA pills and

11,000 diazepam tablets, as well as 225,000 euros in cash. Atherton’s trial followed his extradition to the UK in the wake of his arrest at the 3-3 group-stage draw, between Sevilla and Liverpool last November. He was one of three men managing the group’s accounts, and, initially, was arrested in a July 2017 raid at his home on Mostyn Avenue, Heswall. A gold-coloured iPhone and luxury Rolex, in addition to Audmars Piguet watches, were also recovered during the bust. Atherton flew from Manchester to Malaga the day

after being quizzed by police, before failing to answer bail on 6th December. Nicholas Johnson QC, prosecuting, described him as “one of the three principals in the conspiracy”, and, as the hearing progressed, added that he was involved in buying and selling “on a commercial scale”. And Atherton will have been even further down in the dumps last Saturday, if inmates were allowed to watch the European Champion’s final on TV, because his beloved Liverpool lost 3-1, thanks to two blunders by the keeper.

We don’t arrest that many Brits in Spain A GOVERNMENT report reveals that the arrest rate for Brit-ish citizens abroad records that Spain, including the Canary and Balearic Islands, is third-lowest of all. Despite being the most popular destinations for Brits, with an estimated 18 million arriving last year alone, just 1,012 arrests were made between 2015 and 2016,

giving Spain an arrest rate of 7.8 per 100,000 visitors. Thailand topped the list with an arrest rate of 44.91, with a total of 194 arrests, followed closely by the United Arab Emirates, with 41.35 and 325 arrests. Portugal were third, with an arrest rate of 27.69 and just 18 arrests. Thailand also tops the list of death rates for British citizens abroad under the age of 40, according to data in the The Sun newspaper.

Women completely out of the swim… for now! THEY certainly didn’t look or sound like men, and they weren’t exactly shaped like men. But a group of women insisted they had every right to swim in Hampstead’s male-only pool, in North London. Tempers were hotter than Monday’s sunshine as they arrived, en masse, and jumped into the water as part of a protest against proposed gender laws. One even donned a bushy beard, while another swam in a lime mankini, a fun, male version of a bikini, to illustrate their point that they “identified” as men. But regulars at the pond failed to see the funny side, and neither did the police, who were called to sort out the dispute. As promptly as they could,

the cops escorted the women out, amid fears that they could be breaching the peace. The invasion was part of a nationwide campaign set up on Mumsnet called #ManFriday, which

encourages women to “selfidentify” as men on Fridays, in a protest against possible changes to gender laws. Campaigners say changes to the Gender Recognition Act could enable people, simply, to declare themselves to be

a man or woman to get all the legal rights of either sex. Amy Desir, 30, who wore the mankini and led the protest group of some 20 women, said: “We are here to raise awareness. There’s a legal consultation due to come

out this summer, asking for the law to change to say that any man, who says he is a woman, can get all the legal protections that women do.” The mother of two, and her fellow-campaigners, are concerned that the proposed legislation would enable predatory men to target women in single-sex facilities. Hampstead has three ponds for swimming: one for men, one for women and one mixed. And to cater for transgender women, the women’s pond changed its rules last December to accept men, who say they identify as female. The protesters told staff at the pond that they “identified as male” and insisted they had the right to swim there. Fifteen minutes later, their demo was sunk because the police arrived, and they were forced to leave. But at least they had made their point.

Bullfighting protesters flood streets of Madrid THOUSANDS of people invaded the streets of Madrid last Sunday, protesting against what they believe was animal cruelty in bullfighting. The demonstration was backed by around 17 animal-rights’ groups, who said around 40,000 had turned out in the Spanish capital to call for an end to the sport. Those attending rallied under the slogan “Bullfighting is Violence”, and Laura Gonzalo, a spokesperson for the Tauromaquia Es Violencia umbrella group, which organised the march,

said bullfighting had no place in the 21st century. “We are demonstrating because society wants to change,” she said. “We demand courage from politicians.” The march began at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, where protesters threw red powder in the air to symbolise the blood of bulls, who die in the sport. And, according to reports, an estimated 20,000 bulls died last year in the ring. The demonstrators, reportedly, had the support of Spanish celebrities such as actor Emma Ozores and singer Mari de Chambao, together with writer and journalist Pilar Eyre. Juan Carlos Monedero, co-founder of far-left

political party Podemos, also voiced his support and said bullfighting could no

longer be considered a part of Spanish culture. “We do not tolerate someone

who mistreats a dog, so why do we tolerate someone mistreating a bull?” he asked.

Missing Scot’s ex wants suspect back in custody THE former boyfriend of missing Scot Lisa Brown is appealing a Spanish judge’s shock decision ruling to release the main suspect.

Tony Tomillero, the father of Lisa’s only child, Marco, is fighting Judge Garcia Ramila’s decision, made in San Roque last month. It comes after the judge shelved the two-year investigation into Lisa’s partner, Simon Corner, despite the expat becoming a fugitive and absconding twice. Tomillero, now the sole carer of their 11-yearold son, has requested that his lawyer appeal the ruling, and he has agreed. Now, the lawyer wants Liverpool-born Corner and five others, arrested for their alleged involvement in the case, to face prosecution should the appeal be accepted. Corner, free while the appeal is being considered,

is still living on the Costa del Sol, it is believed. Craig Douglas, Brown’s brother, said their family believe there is a “wall of silence”, among the Englishspeaking community in southern Spain, over his

sister’s disappearance. “We are sure that people know what happened, and we ask them to think of a little boy, who asks every night when his Mummy is coming home,” said Craig. “We also hope that the

reward might persuade people to tell us what happened.” The 1,000,000-euro reward for information on the case, offered by Lisa’s family, along with Crimestoppers, still remains in place. And

Spanish police will continue their investigations, regardless of the appeal outcome. Roger Critchell, Crimestoppers’ Director of Operations, told a press conference: “The family are desperate to find out what happened to Lisa. We understand that people are not always willing to go to the police, so we would urge them to contact Crimestoppers, with 100% anonymity, through our phone line and our online form.” British Ambassador Simon Manley offered his support at the meeting, saying: “Citizen collaboration is essential in this kind of case. “Co-operation between Spanish and British security forces is another key element, and both countries have an excellent relationship in this field.” Those with information can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 and 900 555 111 in Spain, or via the web at https://crimestoppers-uk. org/give-information/giveinformation-online.

Should you keep hold of UK investments in Spain? By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

HOWEVER well we have settled into our new way of life in the Canary Isles, most UK nationals continue with some British lifestyle habits. Whether it’s a Sunday roast with all the trimmings, or watching UK TV channels and sport, there are some ties we do not like to lose and comfort in familiarity. The same applies for UK investments. You may have accumulated Premium Bonds, ISAs etc. over the years, or shares in UK companies, and prefer to hang on to them because they are familiar and feel a safe option. But are these suitable investments for your new life in Spain?

In particular, once you take up residence in Spain, the tax incentives provided by Premium Bonds and ISAs in the UK fall away, and all income and gains are subject to tax in Spain. Premium bonds and ISAs Premium bonds were launched 60 years ago, and, today, around 21 million people own them. They do not provide any automatic interest earnings or capital growth, so their value will be eroded over time by inflation, but the possibility of winning a large prize can make them quite appealing. But what are the chances of winning big? According to MoneySavingExpert, you have a one-in-45million chance of winning the jackpot with a National Lottery ticket, but your chance of becoming a millionaire through one single Premium Bond is one in almost 36 billion. If you're happy to win £25,000,

the chances are still one in 2 billion. One key attraction is that they have always been tax free in the UK; they are not tax free if you live in Spain, though. As a Spanish resident, any winnings are taxed as general income. They are added to your general income for the year, and taxed at the scale rates of tax, up to 46.5% in the Canary Isles. ISAs are fully taxable in Spain, in the hands of Spanish residents, at the savings income tax rates (19%, 21% and 23%). This applies to income and gains from cash and share ISAs. Some expatriates mistakenly think that since they are UK investments they do not need to be declared in Spain. In fact they do, and with automatic exchange of information taking place under the Common Reporting Standard, the Spain tax authorities will

be informed about your UK investments. Other UK investments You also need to look at your other UK investments, such as shares, unit trusts, OEICs and investment bonds, and consider how they are taxed in Spain. Are they the most tax-efficient way of holding your capital? Besides income tax, what tax will you have to pay on the gains when you sell them? It's not all about tax There are very tax-efficient investment vehicles available to residents of Spain. With specialist professional advice, you could enjoy extremelyfavourable tax treatment on your capital investments. Speak to an adviser, who can guide you on both UK and Spanish taxation, and tax-planning opportunities. Taxation is not the only reason to review your savings and investments. Ensure they are suitable for your life in the Canary Isles

and future expectations; your objectives (are you looking for income?); your time horizon and risk tolerance. Too many people have portfolios which were built up over the years and are no longer suitable for them today. You need personalised advice from a locally-based adviser like Blevins Franks, who provides holistic advice covering investments, tax efficiency and estate planning. The tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; an individual is advised to seek personalised advice. Finance chief too cool for Russians BILL Browder, the British financier and anti-corruption campaigner, who is a leading critic of Vladimir Putin, was freed on Wednesday after being held on a Russian Interpol arrest warrant in Madrid, for one hour!

The US-born 54-yearold wrote on Twitter that he was released from custody, because Spanish authorities were advised the warrant was invalid. Interpol said in a statement: “There is not, and never has been, a Red Notice for Mr Bill Browder. Mr Browder is not wanted via Interpol channels.” After earlier tweeting his arrest with a photo, taken in the back of a police car,

EU members seek easy-going Brexit A MAJORITY of European Union (EU) states have said they don’t want to enforce special residency arrangements for Britons, after the UK’s withdrawal. Representatives of the 27 EU member states met in Brussels last week to discuss living arrangements for British expatriates, and most officials, reportedly, agreed on a “smooth” and “simple” approach to residency. Britons who move to the bloc before the end of the Brexit transition period, on 31st December 2020, will be granted similar

rights to those enjoyed by expatriates today. The proposals stand in contrast with those of the UK, with Westminster, apparently, favouring charging EU nationals around 82 euros to remain in the country, following its EU withdrawal. Ten EU member states wanted to impose a similar regime, while 17 were against it at the Brussels summit. Spanish officials were, reportedly, undecided, while those of Germany were said to be leaning towards a mandatory residency system. The next meeting on the subject is set to take place in September.

Browder later posted a copy of Spanish Interior Ministry documents, accusing him of fraud. “Spanish National Police just released me after Interpol General Secretary in Lyon advised them not to honour the new Russian Interpol Red Notice,” he said. “This is the sixth time that Russia has abused Interpol in my case.” Browder, as head of investment fund Hermitage Capital Investment, fronted a campaign to expose alleged corruption by Russian officials, after his employee, Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer, died in a Moscow prison in 2009, after being held for 11 months without trial, on charges widely claimed as false. In the wake of his death, Browder worked with US Congress to pass the 2012 Magnitsky Act, which was a range of sanctions against top Russian officials. Since then, Browder has campaigned for investigations into the alleged fraud. He was put on trial in absentia in 2013 for tax evasion, the same trial in which the deceased Magnitsky faced charges, which was labelled “absurd” by observers. Browder was once one of the biggest foreign investors in Russia, controlling Hermitage Capital Management.

And though Russian prosecutors accused him of creating a company for tax-fraud purposes, and later refused him entry into the country, Browder has always said the charges against him were politically motivated. British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson said he had spoken with him and was “very glad that he has now been released”. He tweeted: “Moscow should concentrate on bringing those responsible for the murder of #Magnitsky to justice.” Browder was in Madrid to give evidence to a Spanish prosecutor about money from the Magnitsky case,

which was moved to Spain. He said the arrest, while on such a trip, was ironic, but added: “Now that I’m released, my mission carries on.” Browder was in Spain to give evidence to antiRussian mafia prosecutor Jose Grinda, about the “huge amount of money from the Magnitsky case that flowed to Spain”. British Foreign Minister Boris Johnson said that he spoke with Browder and was “very glad that he has now been released”. He tweeted: “Moscow should concentrate on bringing those responsible for the murder of #Magnitsky to justice.”

Suffragettes with Lucy Worsley

Monday 4th June, BBC1, 20.30

2018 will mark 100 years since women over the age of 30, who owned property, were first allowed to vote in the UK. Today in Britain this feels like a basic human right, but as Lucy Worsley will reveal in this 90-minute special for BBC One, the battle that women had to wage for this right was complex, hard fought, and by no means certain of success. The struggle was also about much more than just the Pankhurst Family and Emily Wilding Davison’s fateful collision with the King’s horse. In this film, Lucy is at the heart of the drama, alongside a group of less well-known, but equally astonishing, young working class Suffragettes who decided to go against every rule and expectation that Edwardian society had about them - women like Annie Kenney and Mary Leigh. Lucy will reveal what it was like for them being tracked by a special police unit, and explore the horrific prison conditions that these women experienced - as well as the dangerous and increasingly violent means to which they resorted to in their fight to gain equality at the ballot box.

Frankie Goes To Russia Sunday 3rd June, BBC2, 21.00

Comedian Frankie Boyle travels to Russia in the lead up to the 2018 football World Cup, with the tournament about to kick off against a backdrop of spy poisoning, alleged state-sponsored doping, threats of ultra-football hooliganism and perhaps the worst relations between Russia and the West since the Cold War. In this two part series, Frankie will visit several host cities to see how Russia is preparing for the tournament and go behind the stereotypes and half-truths of Russian football and culture with his trademark provocative humour. To sell a positive image of Russia to the West requires a PR effort of gargantuan proportions. In Moscow, Frankie joins a specially selected, photogenic group of young people at a World Cup volunteer training course where students are being taught how to greet tourists - as well as how to survive a chemical attack. Frankie sees the World Cup final stadium up close, before visiting an all-female barber shop where he discovers feminism is out and hooliganism is in. He also meets Putin’s biggest fan, a comic book artist who has a life-size cut out of the President and believes that although the West propagates anti-Russian propaganda, he thinks the World Cup will be a huge-success story for the country. Frankie goes on to visit Rostov-on-Don, a city near the Ukrainian border with a reputation for football violence, and tries to track down the city’s hooligans. Checking in to his hotel he discovers a welcome pack with an unusual notice saying what to do in the case of being taken hostage, but feels instantly at home because the town is twinned with Glasgow. The Rostov-on-Don Cossacks have been assigned a special role at this World Cup, policing stadiums, so Frankie’s keen to spend some time with the famous sabre-wielding warriors. He experiences Cossack hospitality and on discovering a mutual love of hip hop records a World Cup Rap with a leading Cossack artist. In Moscow for Election Day, Frankie watches as Putin is elected president for a fourth time. During Frankie’s time there diplomatic relations between UK and Russia are at an all-time low - when back in the UK news breaks that a former Russian spy and his daughter are poisoned in Salisbury - allowing Frankie to observe the unfolding situation from a unique perspective.Frankie Goes To Russia

Grenfell: The First 24 Hours Wednesday 6th June, ITV1, 21.00

“I was in the kitchen and I phoned my son. I tried to talk but there were no words coming out of my mouth. He was thinking I was in trouble, [as if] I was having a heart attack, but then he was hearing the fire alarm at the same time. I was thinking of my family - I cannot be roasted, I cannot die in here, I have to get out of here.” - Resident Clarita Ghavini, rescued from Grenfell Tower This special one-off documentary marking the first anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire tells the story of the disaster from the moment it began until the flames were finally brought under control 24 hours later. Produced by Mentorn Media, who made last year’s Inside London’s Fire Brigade documentary series, the hour-long film focuses on the survivors’ stories, by using first-hand eye-witness accounts of those living in and around the tower, as well as their personal footage captured on the night to piece together the timeline of the tragic events. Starting at the first report of the blaze at 12.54am on June 14, 2017 and continuing through to the moment the London Fire Brigade got the fire under control 24 hours later, the documentary provides a vivid insight into the tragedy by piecing together survivors’ stories with those of onlookers and those involved in the fire and rescue operation. For the first time, a firefighter who rescued nine people from the burning tower talks in detail about his experience of entering the inferno on a search and rescue mission. Others recount emotional memories of extreme acts of bravery by members of the public and firefighters as the horror unfolded.

Tracey Breaks The News BBC1, 21.30

Tracey Ullman is back with her unique comic spin on the headlines, including her impressions of politicians and celebrities. This week Jeremy Corbyn has an awkward meeting with an old friend, Europe’s beige-est leader Angela Merkel re-assesses her image, and Rupert Murdoch (Ben Miller) spends some quality time with his main squeeze, Jerry Hall. Brand new for this series the ever-so-trustworthy Michael Gove, and the hilarious new double act of Jacob Rees-Mogg (Liam Hourican) and his very long-suffering Nanny... Tracey Breaks The News is a BBC Studios production, produced by Caroline Norris. The Director is Dom Brigstocke and the Executive Producer is Gareth Edwards. Commissioning Editor is Kate Daughton.

Taariq is still at large when he recognises the car that was used to kidnap Margrethe Thormod, and tracks down its owner with the intention of extorting money from him. But the car owner says he was robbed by Taariq, that the car was in a repair shop in Sweden on the date of the murder, and that he and his wife were on a trip in Germany. But is he telling them everything he knows? When another murder at the hospital in Malmö seems to be connected to the two previous ones, Saga finally realises how they are linked, and that the killing is probably going to continue. Meanwhile the girls run away from Henrik’s house, and while trying to find them Henrik runs in to an old familiar face: Thomas, the drug dealer. Saga continues to go to therapy, but wonders if it is really helping her...

International Football Friendly: England v Nigeria ITV1, 17.00

Mark Pougatch hosts live coverage as England play their penultimate game before the World Cup gets under way as they take on Nigeria in a friendly at Wembley. Gareth Southgate has selected a youthful squad for Russia and could look to give a debut to 19 year old Liverpool full back Trent Alexander Arnold. Harry Kane will skipper the side during the tournament and the Tottenham striker will be keen to add to his tally of 12 goals in 23 appearances for his country. The Super Eagles were the first African team to qualify for the World Cup and with a provisional squad including the likes of Alex Iwobi, Victor Moses and Kelechi Iheanacho, as well as captain John Mikel Obi, their side may look familiar to English football fans. Mark is joined by for expert analysis by Ian Wright and Lee Dixon with commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle.

Journey In The Danger Zone: Iraq c h o i c e BBC2, 20.00

In a two-hour mini-series for BBC Two from leading UK producer October Films, journalist and former British soldier Adnan Sarwar returns to Iraq to explore how the country has changed since he served there during the Iraq war. Adnan Sarwar arrived in Iraq in 2003 as a 24 year-old soldier with the British army. He initially viewed his mission as liberating the country’s people from Saddam Hussein, but when parts of the population turned against the allied forces, Adnan’s life was changed forever by an ambush which killed one of his friends. Sarwar saw first-hand how driving Saddam from power led to more violence and ultimately the creation of ISIS. Now, with ISIS gone, he is travelling back to Iraq to discover the country afresh, beyond the headlines and wars to meet everyday people rebuilding their lives. On a journey from the top to bottom of Iraq, from its snowy peaks to its arid deserts, Sarwar will venture through ancient hilltop villages, ISIS tunnels, magnificent gorges; and sleep under the stars with the locals. He’ll walk with mine clearing teams in Mosul, where people are returning to their homes, join wildlife conservationists releasing bears near one of Saddam Hussein’s old palaces; meet pop-singers, all-female fighting units, archaeologists, oil-workers, LGBT activists and ordinary Iraqis from all walks of life. But with sectarian violence, ISIS sleeper cells and deadly bomb attacks still a daily reality, Adnan explores whether the country can break its cycle of violence, and forge a better future. Denman Rooke, Executive Producer, says: “Adnan is the perfect guide to Iraq for this series. He brings a former soldier’s insight and understanding of why - for some - fighting is a way of life, alongside his unique brand of warmth, curiosity and razorsharp journalistic intelligence, which allow him to engage with and understand the lives of Iraqis as they look to the future.”

Britain’s Secret Charity Cheats BBC1, 09.15

With more than £2 billion given by the British public to support charities ending up in the hands of crooks and cheats, reporter Kevin Duala sets out to expose the charity scammers. When help is needed you can count on the British public to step up to the mark, giving their time and money. Every year we hand over around £10 billion pounds to support tens of thousands of hard-working charities. But according to the latest figures, it is estimated that more than £2 billion falls into the hands of cheats and criminals. In this series, reporter Kevin Duala sets out to expose the scams that are denying good causes your valuable donations. As well as investigating those who prey on the charity sector, this series celebrates the fantastic work of the UK’s charity heroes left to pick up the pieces. And Kevin will give everyone the tools they need to make sure their donations are spent exactly the way they intend.

How To Spend It Well: House and Garden with Phillip Schofield ITV1, 20.00

In this one-off special Phillip Schofield roadtests, rates and reviews the big-selling items we’ll be buying this summer for the house and garden. Assisted by his wife Steph, s ome famous faces and members of the Great British public, he’ll be helping viewers decide how to spend their cash wiselywhen it comes to the minefield of consumer choice that hits the shelves in the summer, covering everything from food and drink to the latest gadgets and essentials for indoors and outdoors . Birds of a Feather’s Linda Robson and Lesley Joseph take a dip into the burgeoning world of the inflatable hot tub. Meanwhile, Chris Kamara works up a sweat at a hot yoga studio to pit a top of the range fan against a basic one to discover if the 17 times price difference is worth it. And Stacey Solomon and her sons Zachary and Leighton test out Phillip’s suggestions for the best garden games for u nder £50. Next it’s the battle of the juicers, where the latest masticating slow juicer goes head to head with a more traditional fast one. The team also heads to Manchester to ask the public to rank their favourite supermarket Rosé wine, and Phillip gives £100 gas and charcoal barbecues a grilling.

Life’s not so fruity

By Val Sainsbury A NEW study has found that fructose, the sugar found in fruit and highfructose corn syrup, is actually processed in the small intestine and not the liver, as previously believed. And when people consume fructose in large amounts, for example in processed foods or a small, soft drink, it overwhelms the small intestine and spills over into the liver, where it gets converted into fat. This is extremely problematic, because the liver is not meant to metabolise fructose. This helps to explain why eating too much sugar can be harmful, especially to the liver. Over time, too much fructose in your diet

can cause liver disease and Type 2 diabetes. Glucose is processed in the liver, while fructose is metabolised in the small intestine. The study followed the passage of fructose and glucose (otherwise known as table sugar) through the digestive systems of laboratory mice. The glucose quickly travelled to the liver, and was then distributed to the rest of the body via blood circulation. Fructose, on the other hand, gathered in the small intestine, instead of being sent to the liver. Researchers concluded that it’s the intestine’s job to deal with fructose and make sure it never reaches the liver. However, when fructose is over-consumed, it leaks, unprocessed, into the liver, and is stored as fat. These fat storages can lead to non-alcoholic, fatty-liver disease, which can subsequently lead to cirrhosis, or even liver cancer. When fructose overwhelms the small intestine, it gets

shuttled to the liver by way of the colon. As a result, it comes into direct contact with the microbes in our gut. “The microbiome [the micro-organisms in a particular environment] is designed to never see sugar,” says Joshua D. Rabinowitz, of the Lewis-Sigler Institute for Integrative Genomics at Princeton University, whose laboratory led the study. “As soon as you drink the soda or juice, the microbiome is seeing an extremely powerful nutrient that it was designed to never see.” While the study didn’t find that fructose affects the microbiome, the authors believe it’s a likely

consequence, and deserves further investigation. The study also found that the small intestine handles fructose more efficiently after a meal, so it’s better to save a sweet treat for dessert only. A large glass of orange juice is too much fructose for the small intestine to process. “There is a fundamental, physiological difference in how smaller and larger amounts of sugar are processed in the body,” added Mr. Rabinowitz. “We can offer some reassurance, at least from these animal studies, that fructose from moderate amounts of fruits will not reach the liver.” However, problems will

occur when the small intestine gets overwhelmed by fructose. How much is too much? Half a can of fizzy drink, or a large glass of orange juice, and you are doing yourself a major disservice. The occasional piece of fruit, however, should be OK. Fruit should be consumed as a moderatelysized portion (less than 25 grams of fructose per day), as a dessert. They should be chosen wisely, because some have more sugar than others. Eat the most nutrient-dense fruits; in-season blueberries and strawberries, for example. which are relatively low in fructose. They are loaded with good-for-you polyphenols, which are antioxidants and protect the body’s tissues against oxidative stress, and associated conditions such as cancers, coronary heart disease and inflammation. Think of fruit as a treat, not a staple of your diet. Remember, your body is simply not made to consume more than what’s in a single piece of fruit.

Traffic fines and sanctions By Emma

from Motorworld

LAST year saw the implementation of a new European Law, with regards to traffic fines within member countries.

This law has permitted the authorities in the EU countries to follow the fine through in other member states, and carry out legal proceedings in any of them. This is something that should be welcomed by safe drivers and road users; it was first implemented in May 2015. The European Council has now adopted a cross-border, exchange - of-information service with regards to traffic offences, something

that we may have already come across in other parts of our lives or day-to-day business. The deadline for implementation across the continent was the 6th May 2015, the only exceptions being the UK, Ireland and Denmark, who, for some reason, had been given a two-year extension for the implementation of this law. Currently, this law only covers eight offences whereby the exchange of information can be enforced. These are: 1. Speeding 2. Failure to wear a seatbelt when driving 3. Failure to stop at a red light 4. Driving when under the influence of alcohol 5. Driving when under the influence of drugs 6. Failure to wear a helmet on a motorcycle or scooter 7. Driving in a lane forbidden to cars: bus lane, taxi-only lane etc. 8. Illegally using a mobile

phone or any other communication devices whilst driving, including texting. At present, there is nothing in place to force foreigners (tourists, as opposed to resident foreigners) to pay fines in countries where they are not resident, but the change does mean that there is now no escaping the law, or fines imposed on drivers. Here in Spain, the DGT has been working towards this implementation, in order to comply with the new law. This means that the Traffic police (Guardia Civil), together with the administrative staff working for the DGT, can start proceedings against the said drivers, and that criminal liability will also be ensured. In general, the police here in the Canary Islands are short of staff, and we may not have yet seen the full effects of the implementation of this law, but, be assured, it is in place and will come.

If you are caught travelling at speed excessively higher than that which is permitted under the law and road you are travelling on, the case will be amplified beyond only sanctions. It will then become a criminal matter, which can be punishable with imprisonment, withdrawal of one’s driving licence, community service and a hefty fine. A driver who has committed an offence of any of these types can no longer ignore the criminal liability of legal proceedings. This new directive on the cross-border exchange of information is a replica of the policy that was adopted in 2011 by the EU, ensuring that the police co-operate on a legal basis. But this directive was annulled by the Courts in 2014, providing a year for a new legal framework to be worked out and implemented, which was done. The objective of the new policy remains the

same as before, and that is to ensure equal treatment of all drivers, and to improve road safety for everyone. Under these new rules, all member states can access the national vehicle registers’ data from other countries, in order to ascertain those responsible for these types of offences that put road safety at risk. The alleged offender may be contacted with a sample letter included in the policy, but this will depend on the individual member state where the offence took place, as each country has autonomy in deciding how to process the sanctions. Currently, the legislation does not allow states to enforce payments of fines in the event of a driver being resident abroad. However, the new directive means that the fine can be collected, and judicial proceedings can be started wherever they live, and in whichever country the offence was committed.

A massive milestone!

K9 animal refuge has come a long way since its origins, and, this week, we hit a milestone! Back in March of 1993, K9 president Elsie rescued her first street dog in Tenerife. She soon became aware of the amount of abandoned and unwanted animals on the island. Along with Silvia and Kay, Elsie decided to help these animals find new homes, and that's how K9 started. Not long after, a sister group for K9 was organised by Susan and founded in Germany. For all these years, we have been renting our kennel facilities. But, this week, we were finally able to purchase the property and land at our current location in Las Zocas. This is a fantastic achievement for K9, and, with this year being our 25th anniversary, there couldn't have been a better time. It has only become possible thanks to our volunteers and supporters, throughout the years. This means we can now make all modifications necessary to help improve the welfare of the animals in our care, to the best of our ability. Evidently, this

is a massive project which will take time and money to execute. Nevertheless, we are excited to own the property, and look forward to improving our refuge. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-andsecure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 102pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker,

K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats. Also, to see daily photos of the walks that take place at K9, like the facebook page Voluntarios del Refugio K9. Charity shop Our charity shop in Alcala Plaza is always looking for new items to sell. If you have any unwanted clothes, shoes, books or bric-abrac, please pop them into our shop, or to K9. We welcome all kinds of items, all proceeds going towards helping the dogs. The shop is open from 10am-2pm, Monday to Saturday. Pop in, or call them on 6465 61035. Collections can also be arranged, using this number. Ways you can help If you wish to support K9 animal refuge, and contribute towards the safe rescue and adoption of abandoned dogs and cats, we would be very appreciative. You can buy our merchandise (T-shirts, vests, key rings, wristbands and more) at K9, sponsor one of our dogs via our website, and donate money via our website, or cash at our refuge. We also welcome donations of food and other items.

Disabled school enjoys a charitable Canarian Day LIZ Montague and Margaret Bird, on behalf of the Helping Hands, celebrated Canarian Day with the children and staff at Guargacho’s CEE Disabled School. The children’s charity has helped the school with generous donations in the past, especially after a horrible burglary a few years ago. And, to Director Anna’s delight, she was presented with 3,000-euro cheque. It will enable the school to buy the necessary computers and special educational equipment for the children. They created

a beautiful picture of a flower, made with each child’s fingerprint, as a thank-you, and, said Liz, who runs the charity: “It is a very special gift that we will treasure.” She added: “Thanks

to Margaret, and also Stephanie Tudge, from Helping Hands, for being part of this special day at CEE. We are looking forward to supporting the school further in the near future.”

Cats Welfare News

Cats are the best! HERE are five reasons why you should all have a feline friend.

1. They can lower your risk of heart disease. Owning a cat can lower your stress levels. Research has found this has a knock-on effect on your risk of cardiovascular disease 2. Their purring is one of the most comforting and rewarding sounds on the planet 3. Cats are clean pretty much 100% of the time. That means you never have to take the time out of your day to perform the somewhat painstaking task of washing and grooming your cat. Since they don’t need bathing, they are especially low maintenance 4. Cats are independent, require little attention and are some of the leastneedy pets around. If you think you do not have the time or energy to own a pet, then a cat could

be perfect for you. Taking care of a cat requires less responsibility than some other animals. Those who have fulltime jobs can rest easy,

knowing that their kitty can take care of itself for the most part. And, when you do have extra time, cuddling up with your cat will feel better than ever.

5. Cats are caring animals. If you let them, they will go from

house pet to family member in no time. Kittens galore! We have lots and lots and lots of kittens available that URGENTLY need homes. If you are thinking of adopting, but are not sure, please contact us with any questions you may have, and we will be happy to discuss them with you. We have many different colours, both male and female, to suit everyone. If you work, have children, a dog or other pets, none of this precludes you from adoption. It is a BIG decision, though, so all kittens go on a week's trial. Contact us via our website www. cats-welfare-tenerife. com or ring/whatsapp Marie (English) on 6466 29129, seven days a week 9am-6pm, or Sandra (Spanish and German) after 6pm on 671 282 773.

Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/condition items for sale in our shop. They can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10-6pm. If you don't have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 6365 90557, and he will arrange collection from you. Fostering We are in urgent need of people, in their own homes, to bottle-feed kittens. No experience is needed, and we will supply all the milk and support! Message us on Facebook, or contact us via www. cats-welfare-tenerife. com

They will be available for adoption very soon, so do come and visit us if you are interested in adopting a dog, or one of these lovely puppies.

Upcoming event A date for your diary is July 7th, which will be our next fundraising event. Please pencil it in, and come and support the many dogs in our care. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. Thai Botanico - where East meets West with luxury and tradition By Tara Scarlata THAI Botanico is a firm favourite with Tenerife locals and visitors. It’s the go-to restaurant for a great night out with friends and family, and a totally-authentic, Thai experience. We were invited back to check out some new items on the menu, and were amazed by the new decor. Tenerife has been transported to Thailand in Thai Botanico. Since we last visited, the interior of the restaurant has been transformed. It is warm and vibrant, and the first thing you will notice are the exquisitely-decorated parasols suspended from the ceiling, bringing in lots of colour and light. The new paint scheme of purple and gold, alongside the solid, wooden tables and elegant, comfortable seating, is so welcoming and inviting; there is a really luxurious feel. In Thai tradition, each day of the week is assigned a specific colour: Purple for Saturdays and yellow for Mondays, which has extreme importance because King Bhumibol and his son were both born on Mondays. Alongside the new colour scheme, a lot of detail has gone into the overall decor, with intricate detailing in the wooden walls, an inviting bar for cocktails, beautiful Buddhas and other, authentic artefacts that wouldn’t be out of place in any Thai temple.

As soon as you walk in you are transported into another land, with all the sights, sounds and smells of Thailand hitting your senses; you won’t want to wait to taste what they have on offer. We went as a group of four, and were warmly greeted on arrival and seated in one of the booths, which were very comfortable and felt very sociable. The restaurant was busy, but it didn’t feel crowded, and there was a very relaxing atmosphere. Our server, who was always at hand, was happy to explain the menu (which also has a handy chili guide on it), and informed us that all dishes were freshly prepared to order, so you could adjust the level of spice in each one. We started with a mixture of appetisers and salads to share - the Salt & Pepper Crispy Chicken Wings were amazing; stir-fried with chilies, peppers and onions, and served with a slice of lime, they are perfectly crispy

on the outside, and succulent on the inside. The Thai Botanico Salad, which was, personally, my favourite appetiser, was a sweet, green-bean salad, tossed in a rich, coconut curry dressing, and topped with king prawn and sliced chicken breast. The dressing was full of flavour, and bought a richness that complemented the fresh salad. The Fresh King Prawn & Vegetable Vietnamese Wraps were light and tasty, and perfect for summer. They were packed full of shredded vegetables with tender, sliced, king prawns, and a mix of fresh herbs, wrapped in a light, rice-paper pancake, served with a very-tasty dipping sauce. Onto the mains; again, we all shared, which works really well at Thai Botanico. It’s very sociable, and you don’t get to try just one amazing dish; you get to try them all! We had the Chili and Basil Seabream; lightly-coated, fried, boneless fish covered

in a thick, sweet, chili-andbasil sauce. This is one you don’t want to miss, and was unanimously voted the favourite dish of the whole meal. The flavours of sweet, lemon basil, mixed with tomato and chili, worked in complete harmony, and the lightly-fried fish was crispy and tasty; an absolute delight for the tastebuds. We also had Phad Se Ew, which is stir-fried, flat-rice noodles, mixed with oriental vegetables and slices of steak. The steak was soft and succulent, the vegetables crunchy, and all were covered in a delicious sauce which gave a nice heat and rich flavour. Another one of the group’s favourites was the Chicken with Cracked Black Pepper & Garlic, which was packed full of flavour, but not spicy, with crunchy onions and peppers, and delicious mushrooms. A Masaman curry is a must in any Thai Restaurant, and the one served here was the

best I have tried. It was full of flavour, with succulent lamb that melted in the mouth and fell off the fork, a thick, rich, luscious sauce with aubergines and potatoes, and cashew nuts that gave another dimension to the dish. We had this with some steamed, jasmine rice, which was cooked, perfectly. For dessert, we tried the house special - mango cheesecake. This was lovely and creamy with a crunchy, biscuit base and a rich, mango topping; a perfect end to a delicious meal. To accompany your meal there is an extensive wine list, traditional Thai beer, or spoil yourself with one of the amazing cocktails they serve. We love Thai Botanico because of the amazing and delicious food and fantastic service, but now, with the new decor as well, it has just excelled itself. The only challenge we have now is to decide what night of the week to go!

CD Tenerife review

IF you can’t have your own party, there’s a certain, mischievous value in spoiling it for someone else. And, in this case, Alvaro Carver was the victim. The former Tenerife coach was a whisker away from his Cadiz side booking a promotion play-off spot. But Malbasic was the partypooper with an extra-time goal, which kept Tenerife in 11th spot, and looking at a mid-table finish. Inaki returned at left-back, allowing Luis Perez to play up on the left wing, and it showed promise. Perez, who has attacking instincts, set up a chance from a corner, but Aveldaño, though connecting with his head, put it over the bar. Cadiz had to press for a win, but keeper Dani Hernandez was their nemesis, making some great saves. Jona turned Carlos Ruiz before unleashing a rasping shot that Dani tipped over the bar after standing tall. Tenerife’s Bryan Acosta, and Fernandez for Cadiz, both wasted chances just before the break, but Tenerife would have enjoyed the half-time cuppa more than their nervous hosts. The second half saw Perea make the breakthrough.

Big Mal’s a party-pooper Cadiz 1 CD Tenerife 1

Inaki had part-cleared a shot to the edge of the box before the striker drove it back beyond the keeper’s reach. But Cadiz couldn’t force the floodgates open as Tenerife showed some pride in resistance. Casadesus picked up a booking for a rugged tackle, which tops

up his disciplinary points, so he is suspended for the final game. A Casadesus goal would have been an early farewell from him to the fans, but

his shot from an Inaki pass had no power. The additions of Juan Carlos for Acosta and Alex Mula for Raul Camara showed that Tenerife be-

lieved they could nick something from the game. And Malbasic was to make the biggest impact after taking over from Alberto, especially as Cadiz missed a sitter at the post in the final minutes, and soon regretted it. Malbasic made himself busy and was looking for an opening, which came in injury-time. A long kick upfield from Dani was knocked on by Casadesus to Malbasic, who had three defenders heading for him. But the Serbian striker pulled the ball wide and hit another impressive goal to level the game. The big forward, often frustrating, has shown his best form in recent weeks to take his tally to nine goals, and he will be worth persevering with next season. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife host Albacete in their final league game, at 7.30 pm. The opposition need points to be sure of beating relegation, so it will be a tough match.

Basketball

Tenerife hit by Real deal PLAY-OFF fever in the Championship hardly had time to raise its voice, as Real Madrid beat Iberostar Tenerife at home and away. After closing the regular season with a thumping 109-62 win at Real Betis, fans were hoping for a longer journey among the top-eight group. Last Sunday, it was into the lions’ den for Tenerife, who, though courageous and competitive, went down 8373 on Madrid’s home court. American Mike Tobey led the resistance, with 21 points, as Madrid pulled away steadily with quarter scores of 21-15, 21-18, 16-15, and 25-25. That left Tenerife’s progress hopes hanging by a thread when Real Madrid

came calling at La Laguna on Tuesday night. A full-house, 5,000 crowd, saw another spirited Tenerife performance. But

an 84-75 loss marked the end of their season. The second quarter made the difference, because an 30-18 advantage gave the visitors a lead after a 14-14 opening. Scores of 23-19, and 20-21 brought the curtain down on a mixed season, the biggest disappointment was being unable to get to the final stages of the European Champions League. Mike Tobey, who scored another 18 points in the final game, will be one of the players that coach Folios Katsivalis will be keen to retain for next season. Constant injuries made for a frustrating season, the prolonged absence of captain Nico Ricotti was probably the toughest of all blows. His return from injury with a two-year contract extension should herald better fortunes in Spain’s top league.

Wrestling

Wheel meet again The ring’s no place for a penalty kick!

HOW many times have you seen a footballer foul an opponent and thought: “Blimey, does this bloke think he’s a wrestler, or what?” Now, the lines have become a little more blurred, because former Norwich City striker Grant Holt is embarking on a professional career as a WAW wrestler.

WHAT could be better than a Sunday morning cycle ride with a few companions? And this year, the 38th Day of the Bicycle in Santa Cruz brought together 3,000 people of all ages, on a wide range of wheels. Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez lent his

support by pushing the pedals, as he has done every year. The cyclists set off from Parque La Granja, to the north of the capital, and headed down, through the heart of the city to the Plaza de España finish, by the port.

It was not a race, but a chance to share a common love of cycling, with the route closed to all other traffic. There was also an extra treat for 25 lucky winners, who each won a new bike in a draw, taking in all 3,000 entrants.

At 37, he really should be ready to put his feet up and watch sport on TV. But last season, Holt was still playing for Barrow in the National League, and he now combines coaching, alongside his playing duties. His new move, to the World Association of Wrestling, has already begun with training bouts, and Holt is set to fight with two established grapplers, Roy and Zac Knight, known as the UK Hooligans, in an event next year called Fightmare 3. Footie fans will remember Holt as an old-fashioned, battering-ram of a centre-forward, with Rochdale, Nottingham Forest, Shrewsbury, and Wigan. And that physical style should serve him well in the wrestling ring, where no holds are barred.

Women’s Football

Late stings are so painful

EVEN at their best, Granadilla Tenerife would have faced a tough task against Atletico Madrid in the Queen’s Cup semi-final at Reus. It was a tense, cagey encounter, which didn’t flow, but Madrid delivered two killer blows in the final minutes. Atletico had the key player in Sosa, who was involved in all their best moves, and she made her intentions known early on with two testing shots on Pili Gonzalez. Cristina Martin-Prieto linked up well with Paloma Lazaro, but, like so many openings from both sides, the finishing shots were predictable and weak. Kokito is normally the livewire sub for Granadilla, with her pace and tricky runs. Yet, given a starting place, she had a quiet game, and, for much of the time, played too deep. Falcon also missed a chance for Atletico, after taking the ball around Maria Estella. But she shot weakly, and the ball trickled comfortably into the waiting hands of Pili. Free-kicks are Sara Tui’s speciality, but her lob into the penalty area was

Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 0 Atletico Madrid 2 headed on and out of play. Yet it signalled a productive spell for the opposition. Falcon was carving out a route to the Granadilla goal, before Jackie Simpson interrupted her with a welltimed tackle. Granadilla’s rhythm wasn’t helped when a Falcon challenge on Maria Estella left her nursing a leg injury. Despite trying to play on, Maria had to limp off after a few more minutes, with Marrero taking her place. The Madrid side sensed a possible weakness and probed the defence. Jackie Simpson lost the ball as Amanda charged in, but Pili came to the rescue with a decisive take on the edge of her box. The best Granadilla chance came at the end of the first half, when Paloma spotted Martin-Prieto, upfield and out wide. She picked her out with a pinpoint cross, and her run-in was unchallenged, but she shot just over the bar. Atletico looked more determined after the break, as Soni tested Pili with a rushed shot. And Ludmilla, arriving from the bench, created plenty of problems for Granadilla. A sloppy back-pass invited

Martin-Prieto to bear down on the keeper, but a big-booted clearance got

the keeper out of bother. Granadilla gambled by bringing on top-scorer

Maria Jose Perez. A ligament injury appeared to have ended her season early, but an operation wasn’t necessary. It was clear, though, that the striker was far from match-fit, and she struggled to make her usual impact. Ludmilla, gunning for a goal, would have got a clear shot in, had Jackie Simpson not made a great clearing tackle. At the other end, Kokito made a speedy raid and hurdled tackles by two defenders, before the keeper forced the ball out of play. Extra-time was looming when disaster struck for Granadilla. Soni drove the ball at goal, and Pili could only get a touch to deflect it to Ludmilla, who pounced to put Atletico ahead. Granadilla, still reeling from that blow, were sunk two minutes into time added on when Sosa’s shot, though blocked by Pili, fell nicely for her to finish at the second attempt. It was a tough end to an amazing season, which saw Granadilla finish fourth in the Premier League. And they will surely return, hungrier than ever, next season.

Tenerife B

Tenerife B chase route B TENERIFE’S B team, physically and emotionally drained, drew the home leg of their promotion showdown against Inter Madrid, who move up thanks to this away goal.

The silver linings were an amazing 4,298 crowd in the senior team stadium, and another couple of bites at the promotion cherry to come against the regional groups’ runners-up. The 18 Tercera division groups produce teams like Tenerife B for winner-takeall ties, plus a further, longwinded knock-out scrap between the second, third and fourth in each group, as well as those beaten in the winners’ ties. Confused? Well, not as much

CD Tenerife B 1 Inter Madrid 1

as the ref was in this Sunday game. A 16th-minute mix up between Tenerife keeper Angel Galvan, and defender Brian Torres, let Rivero in for a gift goal. A hard-earned 0-0 away leg suddenly meant little, because away goals decide drawn ties, so it

had to be a home win! Tenerife had some impressive under-23 players on show from their groupwinning season. Right-back Nahuel looks destined for the senior team, left-winger Faradi, from Tanzania, showed fine skills, and forward Marwan hustled

in the manner of an oldfashioned striker. After 40 minutes, a foul in the box gave Tenerife a penalty, converted by defender Fede with a calmness that belied his years. Madrid had been extremely tough with their first-half tackles, and the second half opened with their keeper, Miguel Angel, crashing heavily into Brian Martin like a bulldozer. The crunch point of the game was a 63rd-minute Bolaños shot that cannoned off the bar and out to Marwen, just out-side the goal area. He crashed the ball into the net, but the ref disallowed it because Martin was nearer to the goal, and, in the ref ’s opinion, interfering with play. It went a bit downhill after

that, players on both sides losing their cool, and the ref abandoning his authority. But at least he added on six minutes of injurytime because of Madrid’s constant theatrics. Tenerife B top-scorer Giovanni came on and was soon rowing with Madrid keeper Miguel. And, at the final whistle, officials and coaches were striving to keep Martin and Madrid pair Gustavo and Moyano apart. However, the other route fixtures have been drawn, and CD Tenerife are away to SD Ejea in Zaragoza this Sunday at 11am. The home leg follows the week after, and, should they progress, there’s another two-legged clash, and then, hopefully, promotion.
