Pedro takes centre stage

Cont. from Front

The 46-year-old, who leads the Socialist PSOE party, had been without a current seat in Parliament, having resigned in 2016. But he has now moved into Madrid’s Moncloa Palace, the official presidential residence.

Rajoy, gracious in defeat, congratulated Sanchez, who said: “Today, democracy has won. A new era in Spanish politics is beginning. I am reaching out to all the parliamentary groups to open these new times, and I hope we are all up to the responsibilities we have ahead of us.” Sánchez, born in Madrid in 1972, is a business and economics graduate, who earned three Master’s degrees. He joined PSOE as a student in 1993, and, having completed his studies, served as chief of staff to the UN high representative to Bosnia, during the 1999 Kosovo conflict. He became a Madrid city councillor in 2004 and served for five years, before being elected, as a PSOE MP, to the Congress of Deputies for Madrid in 2009. But after losing his seat in 2011, he returned to studying, and was awarded a doctorate in economics from the Camilo Jose Cela University in 2012. Then, before regaining his Congress seat in 2013, he combined consultancy work with a stint as a university professor. Sánchez was elected PSOE leader in 2014, on a platform of constitutional reform, progressive fiscal policies and extended welfare rights. In December 2015, following the election stalemate, he was invited to form a coalition government by the King of Spain. But he was unable to do so, creating divisions within the PSOE ranks. Following a second, inconclusive ballot six months later, he was deposed in October 2016, having refused to play a part in enabling

Rajoy’s return to office. He resigned his seat, promptly, and went on a political road trip to reconnect with Spanish voters. The gamble paid off when he sailed to victory against Susana Diaz in a new party leadership contest. And the latest events have completed a remarkable comeback. Sánchez, married with two daughters, is an atheist, who enjoys languages and is fluent in English and French. He also loves playing basketball. But he faces a tough challenge because his party, the second-largest in Parliament, holds just 84 seats out of the 350 available. Also, his new job comes right in the middle of the Catalunya separatist crisis, which led Rajoy’s rightwing PP government to strip the region of its selfruling powers, in addition to several politicians being jailed, or forced into exile. Spain has also been warned by the European Union that it is likely to fail in its debt targets this year. Yet essential services, such as education, welfare, social care and healthcare remain under-funded and understaffed. While unemployment has fallen dramatically since the PP took office in November 2011, the job-seeker percentage shows part of the story only: wages continue to be low, with one of the most reduced minimum wages in western Europe, and temporary work, with long gaps in between are rife. In fact, over 90% of new jobs created are temporary only, often seasonal, and even

outside of the main tourism belts. Balancing the books and trying to solve the Catalunya independence crisis would be complicated enough for a government with a Parliamentary majority. But that’s something Spain has not had since the November 2015 general elections. Sánchez, in thanking Parliament for its support, said he intended to work for “social cohesion” and

“social stability”. That will mean him “attending to some, long-overdue social emergencies, created and neglected by the PP”, as well as addressing issues of gender equality and the environment, “as society is calling for”. Crucially, he said the interests of Spain’s people would always be put before those of politicians and parties. The new Prime Minister is “conscious of the

responsibility” he is taking on, but he pledges to exercise his role “with dedication and humility”, aiming to “transform and modernise” the country. As he said, finally: “Spain deserves it.” Parliamentary chairwoman Ana Pastor (PP) attended the Zarzuela Palace to communicate, officially, the change of Prime Minister to King Felipe VI. Rajoy stayed only for a few hours of last Friday’s debate around the no-confidence motion. He left the building at around 3.15pm and missed the remaining discussions, which went on until the night. And while Rajoy sat with close friends for eight hours in a restaurant near the Parliament building, his deputy, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, used the now-ex PM’s chair for her handbag. During one of the most critical Parliamentary discussions so far this year, left-wing Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias quipped: “It’s a shame Rajoy’s seat is occupied by a handbag.”

Deposed PM Mariano Rajoy has his final word

Rajoy down, and out!

MARIANO Rajoy, leader of the Popular Party and Spanish Prime Minister of Spain from 2011 until last week’s no-confidence vote, is “leaving politics”.

But, at meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee, he pledged to stay on in a caretaker role until a successor was chosen. The PP is now set to begin to process of selecting a new chief, ahead of elections, to be held any time before July 2020. Rajoy said the last few days had not been easy for him, but he had “felt comforted” by the support of his party colleagues. “The time has come to put an end to this story,” he said. “The PP must continue advancing under the leadership of another person.”

Youngsters’ successful search for recyclables

ARONA’S primary schoolchildren, taking part in a recycling scheme, have collected enough objects to fill an astonishing 1,771 containers between them. They held more than 30

tonnes of plastic, tin cans and corks, along with other recyclables, collected since last November, which have been put to good use. A total of 5,233 youngsters took part in the project, which began last year under the campaign umbrella of “My school recycles”. The incentive was to raise

awareness among the younger pupils, and the rules of the contest meant that the kids had to fill different types of containers with various types of recyclables. And they really did respond to the challenge. Children from schools across Arona attended La Plaza del Pescadores, in Los Cristianos on Tuesday, which was World

Environmental Day, to receive special awards for their efforts. Arona Mayor Jose Julian Mena was accompanied by Yurena Garcia, Arona’s Head of Recruitment, as well as Francisco Marichal, to present the children’s awards. Some of them comprised cheques, to a total value of 10,450 euros.

The recycling money, raised by the children, will be used by the awardwinning schools to buy extra materials and subsidise excursions, as well as contributing to many other uses. Mayor Mena thanked all the students, as well as the parents and the teachers, for collaborating with the campaign.

Another pharmacy break-in, and the robbers are caught! Flight of fancy for an anxious teacher

A WOMAN from Gran Canaria, who was carried away with the charming chap sitting next to her on a three-hour flight with Norwegian Airlines, is anxious to contact him.

Laura Pérez, a schoolteacher living on the island, was flying home from Madrid on 31st May when cupid shot his arrow. But, sadly, during the hustle and bustle when they disembarked, they forgot to exchange contact numbers. The love story was posted across Laura’s twitter account, in which

she says she is searching for her Prince Charming, along with a few hash tags stating # moments of silence for my lost love# # airport love # Thousands of twitter-users have decided to help the lovesick woman, as well as the

Norwegian company. The airline has tweeted: “If you are the man who sat in seat 8A on the flight from Madrid to Gran Canaria on 31st May, the passenger who was sitting next to you in seat 8B has a message for you.”

IT’S hard to believe, considering recent publicity, but two men, wearing hoodies, were seen breaking into a pharmacy in Adeje last Friday by off-duty Guardia Civil officers, who called for reinforcements, rapidly. A number of Tenerife chemist shops have been broken into this year, as reported in Canarian Weekly. These were the fourth premises in the South to be targeted, and, for the first time, the villains were apprehended. The officers, based in La Laguna, could not have timed their break better, and both thieves were detained, after being charged with robbery, as well as breaking and entering. The incident happened at around midday, when the off-duty officers were distracted by a noise coming from a nearby establishment. As they drew closer, they saw the men, their faces well hidden, trying to force their way into a shop. One of them even used a

pair of socks as gloves to cover his hands, as they forced the chemist’s front door open. Local Guardia officers, on patrol, arrived only minutes later, and backed up their colleagues by waiting outside for both individuals to leave the premises. Once the thieves saw them, they dropped everything, including a safe and tools, and tried to run away. Unfortunately for them, the officers were a bit speedier on their feet, and were able to nab them. The cops returned the safe, complete with 6,000 euros, to the pharmacy owner, and the robbers are in custody, while being investigated.

Crime lord, who took time off his stag party to arrange drug deals

THE Spanish Traffic Department (DGT) has reduced the age limit for obtaining a Heavy Goods licence, from 21 to 18 years.

The simple reason is that, according to statistics, there is a lack of licenced HG drivers in Spain. Gregorio Serrano, head of Spain’s Traffic Department, said: “We are the only place in Europe where you have to wait until your 21st birthday before you can take your test to drive these vehicles.” He also stressed that there was a lack of Spanish drivers around Europe qualified to drive HG vehicles.

Britons’ hate-crimes arrest

FIVE British expatriates have been held on suspicion of hate crimes, in the wake of vigilante protests against African prostitutes. Some 20 Nigerian women alerted Magaluf’s Local Police, filing complaints that they had been physically assaulted, and verbally abused, while being filmed without their consent. The men arrested, who have not been named, have, reportedly, been told they face a court hearing after being fingerprinted at a Guardia Civil station. They are said to be members of a social-media group, set up to curb the “threat” of sex workers, they believe, are responsible for muggings and violent attacks on drunken revellers at the party resort. One of their pals said: “The outcome with the police wasn’t good. Our friends are being charged with hate crimes and are awaiting court.” The prostitutes are thought to be brought into Spain from Africa by a sex-trafficking ring. And local business owners, including many Britons, blame them for a fall in trade. The latest drama follows a string of incidents, which have encouraged holiday-makers to join protests against the women and, also, clash with Spanish taxi-drivers chanting, “No prostitutes on the streets”.

In deep trouble, Carl Hannon and his co-conspirators

A BRITISH crime lord, who arranged drug deals while on his stag-do in Ibiza, is facing prison, after planning to supply cocaine and heroin across the UK. Carl Hannan, following a six-week trial at Teesside Crown Court, awaits sentencing after he and six accomplices were found guilty of the above offences. The 34-year-old was accused of heading a country-wide plot, involving Liverpool and Newcastle gangs. And, after co-conspirator Mark Robinson was stopped in a Ford Mondeo rental car containing heroin and cocaine, Hannan sent a WhatsApp message which read: “They’ve been caught… with lots of stuff.” Other members of his Middlesbrough-based crew included David Butler, 47, Robert Hutchinson, 32, Mark Robinson, 37, Simon Robinson, 33, Gordon Mackenzie, 33, and Colin McNally, 46. The court heard that Butler made regular trips to Liverpool, by road, to pick up drug consignments. He was held after investigators found one kilo of heroin,

wrapped in kitchen paper and hidden in a Ford Focus, while he was behind the wheel. Hannan, who told detectives he sold “cars, bikes, golf clubs, laptops, iPhones… all different bits and bobs”, was recorded suggesting a plea bargain in the wake of the Butler and Robinson arrests, after police had launched a covert, surveillance operation. He was also heard discussing the idea of getting Robinson’s brother, Simon, to shoulder the blame for incriminating phone calls. It would have meant Hannan avoiding prison. McNally, head of the Newcastle-based cell, who ran an asset-recovery firm which repossessed vehicles, was held after a £20,000 cash bundle was unearthed at his home, carrying Hannan’s fingerprints. The pair denied their drugdealing roles, but five other suspects, including two from Teesside, two from Liverpool and one from Tyneside, had already pleaded guilty. Prosecutor Andrew Haslam QC said the men ran a ring, supplying Class A drugs in Teesside and Tyneside, before confirming that Hannan orchestrated one transaction in Eston, North

Yorkshire, “while on his stag-do in Ibiza”. The lawyer added that the mob used cheap, “dirty” or “graft” phones, managed by Mackenzie, who changed them regularly to avoid detection. Hannan was accused of being “at the very heart of this conspiracy”, since he was responsible for sourcing the drugs from Liverpool, while others delivered and stored them. All seven men have been remanded in custody, ahead of sentencing, while two others, Ryan Maddren, 23, of Hartlepool, and Kevin McCulley, 39, of Croxteth, Liverpool, were cleared. An additional five defendants, James Williams, 43, of Middlesbrough; Kristofer Millward, 39, of Holme House Prison; Andrew Rae, 49, of Gateshead; Paul Smith, 33, of Liverpool, and said to have headed the Merseyside gang, along with Eric Challinor-Rankin, 29, of Liverpool, have already been jailed. Earlier, Carl and brother Stuart had been accused of illegal-weapons possession, including a sawn-off shotgun, during a murder trial, after their cousin Lee, 29, had been stabbed to death in Grangetown, Redcar.

Flying Chinaman is rescued by firemen

A unique event, put on by these special people ADEJE Cultural Centre will host the 11th theatrical event for people with diverse needs on Thursday (11th June), and entrance is free.

A CHINESE man, 69, who was left dangling precariously, more than 60ft from the ground, on a cliffside, after crashing his paraglider, was rescued by the fire service in Puerto de la Cruz. Fire-fighters reassured the frightened man, before lifting him down, on to a stretcher. He was stabilised and then transferred to hospital, where he has been treated for injuries to his lower limbs. Another man, of the same age, also had a narrow escape when climbing the

mountain area of Las Minas del Rabico, in Northern Spain’s Picos de Europa national park. The British mountaineer lost his way in dense fog and became confused, falling about 33ft on to a ledge, and narrowly avoiding a dangerous fall. Fortunately, he managed to alert his family in England by using an emergency app on his mobile. They contacted the British Consulate, immediately, and also informed the Guardia Civil. The pensioner has since been treated for hypothermia, exhaustion and possible head injuries, after medics set up an overnight tent on the mountain to tend to him.

The show features members of the Guía de Isora occupational centre, Candelaria Arcoiris centre, and Orobal, based in Los Cristianos, along with the

Los Olivos functionaldiversity centre. “This is the only event of its kind in the islands, and it is a firm fixture in Adeje’s cultural calendar,” said a Council representative. “It’s very popular with the public and we are hoping for a full house again this year.” The people involved from the participating centres have all played an active role in choosing their show or play, as well as the casting and presentation.

The Los Olivos centre has 119 users, as well as combining with 65 more individuals outside the centre. It works with people in the fields of education and integration, preparing many socially. It also helps them to enter the labour market, strengthening their personal autonomy and independence, as well as their ability to develop as individuals, and improve their quality of life, and also that of their families.

Migrants catch cold with their dodgy captain

A PATERA, carrying 53 immigrants, was intercepted by the local navy on the north coast of Mauritania, en route to the Canary Islands. Sources say the group were Senegalese, who had already sailed from an unspecific area on the Atlantic coast, with the

prospect of the Canaries being their final destination The captain made an excuse to stop off in Mauritania’s Nouadhibou port to buy supplies for the treacherous journey ahead. But he abandoned the boat, and with it the occupants, together with the cash they had just given him for the supplies. The navy then intercepted the hapless sub-Saharans,

and spent this week questioning them. Once the questioning was over, they were handed over to the police and sent back to Senegal. Spain’s National Police, and the Guardia Civil, are already in Mauritania, collaborating with the military Their intention is to take control of the trafficking and exploitation of these poor people.

GUARDIA Civil officers, based at Santa Cruz port, have charged a man with crimes against public health, as well as drugtrafficking.

He was nabbed during a random check by the Guardia, specifically for tax reasons, as passengers arrived at the port on a popular, commercial ferry, which sails from island to island on a daily basis. The officers stopped the suspect’s vehicle, and a search revealed a bag, hidden carefully inside the car. When they took a closer look, they found that it contained a white, powdery substance, which turned out to be cocaine. They seized a total of 500gms, along with cash, and the person responsible is now in custody, awaiting a court hearing in Santa Cruz.

Donkey gives birth, in house driveway! A DONKEY stunned a family living in the New Forest by wandering up their driveway and giving birth to a foal, right outside their kitchen window. Martin Sampson, 41, of Brockenhurst, Hampshire, said it was “incredible” when a pregnant mother arrived on his drive, along with six other donkeys, who hovered around outside. The pregnant donkey, known as “Jenny”, went into labour outside his home, and, within 30 minutes, had given birth to her foal, alongside his car. After two hours of struggling, the foal took her first steps and left the driveway, along with mum and the rest of the group. Neighbours recalled seeing another donkey

being born at the very same spot 10 years ago, and they believe it could be the same one, returning to give birth herself. Mr Sampson said: “My five-year-old daughter, Ellie, who spotted what was happening, noticed that the donkey was pregnant. “There were five or six other donkeys hanging around outside the

driveway, as if they were checking to make sure it was a safe place to give birth. “When we saw that she was going into labour, we left some food outside for her, to provide energy. But she wasn’t in any pain during the birth. “Afterwards, some of the other donkeys began wailing very loudly. We think they

were trying to warn other animals that there had been a birth here.” He added: “Watching the baby try to walk was incredible. After two hours of trying to get up and falling over, she was finally able to walk, and the mother took her up the road to graze.” Ponies, donkeys and cattle are allowed to

roam freely in the New Forest, because more than 6,000 animals are owned by New Forest commoners, who have grazing rights. Donkeys prefer to be around trees, hedges and bushes, and they visit built-up areas to feed. They can even communicate with each other through voice, which can reach up to two miles.

On-board booze Rain clobbers Valencia ban by Ryanair THE Valencia region was flooded on Sunday, after more than 100mm of water fell in 24 hours.

Three people were rescued by firefighters after being trapped in their car in Alginet, while the Segura river burst its banks in Elche de la Sierra, swamping the area. According to state weather agency Aemet, it hadn’t rained so heavily in June since 2002. Emergency services were working to clear the roads affected by the

RYANAIR has announced that passengers flying to Ibiza this summer will be unable to bring alcohol bought in Duty Free shops on to the plane. The budget airline, not always popular with travellers, plans to crack down on drunken, on-board behaviour, which will surely win back supporters. All alcohol bought in Duty Free will need to be packed into luggage, which will then be carried in the hold. Ryanair said in an email to passengers heading to Ibiza:

“Any alcohol purchased in airport shops, or elsewhere, must be packed carefully in a suitable item of cabin baggage, which will be tagged at the gate and then placed in the aircraft hold, free of charge. It also warned that “boarding gates will be carefully monitored, with any passengers showing signs of anti-social behaviour or attempting to conceal alcohol, denied travel without refund or compensation.” However, there was no mention of not being able to purchase alcohol during the flight! But if the scheme goes well, perhaps it will be expanded to other flights to the Canaries.

No salad days for the unlucky seven SEVEN men were held by Border Force officers after a mighty cannabis haul, hidden in crates of lettuce and worth 4.6m euros, was unearthed in a container shipped from Spain to the UK. The officers discovered the 400kg stash in the wake of a joint probe with the National Crime Agency (NCA). The cannabis was found aboard the Wec Vermeer vessel, which had docked at the Port of Liverpool, five days ahead of the raid. A covert surveillance operation was launched,

with investigators tracking the container after it had been loaded on to an articulated lorry, then driven to a Lancashire industrial unit in Lytham St Annes. Officers swooped to arrest the driver and two others who were unloading the vehicle, before three suspects were held in nearby Kirkham. A fourth individual was detained in the Trafford Park area of Greater Manchester. Greg McKenna, Head of NCA Investigations for the north of England, said in a statement: “This is a

significant disruption of an organised crime network, which has stopped the proceeds of a crime, funding further criminality that would have damaged communities and exploited the vulnerable. “We take importations such as this very seriously, and these arrests show that we will detect criminal activity and arrest those responsible.” All seven suspects have been released on bail after being quizzed by detectives on suspicion of conspiring to import class B drugs.

Warhol wonder works are on show in Malaga

We’ll sue Facebook for millions of users ANDY Warhol’s most iconic works have arrived on the Costa del Sol, officially, and visitors can now get up close and personal with some of his most famous pieces of art.

These include such masterpieces as Campbell’s Soup Cans, at Malaga’s Picasso Museum, and the show runs until 16th September. The exhibition, Warhol. Mechanical Art, promises to take visitors on a “journey”, starting with Warhol’s earliest

work as a commercial graphic designer in the 1950s, with almost 400 on-loan pieces, on display from 45 sources. It showcases paintings, sculptures, short films, photography, magazines and album covers, and the exhibition is set to bring fans closer to the underground art world. That emerged in the second half of the 20th century, when Warhol opened his legendary New York studio, The Silver Factory. The display, aptly named Mechanical Art, focuses on the innovative way Warhol drew inspiration from the 19th Century American Industrial Re-

volution, by using machines to create screen prints, and his interest in video forms of art. Special emphasis has been placed on Exploding Plastic Inevitable, a series of live, multi-media performances, which included performances with The Velvet Underground and Nico. Warhol is still one of the most famous and most popular artists of all time, recognised widely as the inventor of pop art. And avid followers will know that he created iconic portraits of the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Liz Taylor and Jackie Kennedy.

A CONSUMER watchdog intends to sue Facebook on behalf of the social media site’s 26 million users in Spain, calling for them to be given 200 euros each in compensation.

The OCU says Mark Zuckerberg’s empire has “breached the national Data Protection Law” by not asking permission, or even informed users in Spain, about its “incorrect” data-mining. It adds that it will be up to the “justice system” to decide the final amount of compensation for each

Facebooker in Spain, whose data has been used without their knowledge or consent. But the organisation calculates that every one of the 26 million should get at least 200 euros, “‘taking into account the profits made” by the social media giant “off the back of users’ data”. The OCU has now set up an online campaign, Misdatossonmios.org (“My data is mine”), so that all Facebook users in Spain can find out more about the action being taken on their behalf. They can also ask for support from consumers to help them “prevent giant corporations from continuing to use personal data, without consent, for their own benefits”.

Italian political drama helps to shore up GBP EUR exchange rate By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

WEAKER -than- expected UK data has put the pound under fresh pressure, raising doubts over the likelihood of the Bank of England (BoE) tightening monetary policy, before the end of the year. A volatile sense of market risk appetite helped to drag the GBP/USD exchange rate lower, hitting a sevenmonth low of 1.3218. On the other hand, the downside bias of the GBP/ EUR exchange rate was limited, thanks to renewed political turmoil within the Eurozone. As the UK consumer price index fell back in April, this left the pound on a weaker footing, undermining the prospect of any imminent BoE policy action. May’s UK manufacturing and construction PMIs also proved disappointing, with signs pointing towards business confidence continuing to

decline, throughout the second quarter. A lack of progress on key Brexit issues, such as the Irish-border question, also helped to push GBP exchange rates lower. Political concerns have weighed heavily on the euro in recent days, thanks to developments in Italy, as the populist Five Star Movement and League attempted to form a working coalition. The alliance threatened to collapse when President Sergio Mattarella rejected the proposed Eurosceptic candidate for finance minister, leading the euro into a sharp slump. However, the threat of fresh elections soon diminished, as the two parties put forward a different candidate, and secured their place as the next government of Italy. Better-than-expected German and Eurozone inflation data also gave investors cause for confidence, boosting hopes that the European Central Bank (ECB) could soon return to a more-hawkish outlook.

Global trade concerns have also picked up, thanks to the Trump administration’s choice to impose steel and aluminium tariffs on the Eurozone, Canada and Mexico. Even so, with market risk aversion limited, the US dollar struggled to gain any fresh momentum from these developments. Nevertheless, after May’s labour market data showed a surprise fall in the unemployment rate, markets remain confident in the prospect of an imminent, Federal Reserve interest-rate hike. Speculation over the likelihood of the BoE

raising interest rates in August is likely to drive further volatility for pound exchange rates, in the weeks ahead. Particular focus will fall on the latest UK wage growth and inflation data, with any signs of a fresh decline in price pressures likely to dent the pound. Worries over a potential clash between Italy’s new government and the EU, over budget restrictions, could see the euro come under fresh fire. Although fears of a fresh Eurozone crisis have diminished since the resolution of the Italian deadlock, these could still flare up if tensions within

the currency union start to mount, once again. As markets widely expect the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates at its June policy meeting, the US dollar may struggle to find any particular strength on the back of the announcement. However, if the Trump administration continues to pursue its more protectionist line of policy, this could help to boost USD exchange rates with a general deterioration in market risk appetite. Major plans highlight the new leader’s aims

THE ambitious plans of Pedro Sánchez, who will spend the next 18 months as Spain’s leader before his job is decided by votes again in the next general elections, include many vital tasks. These take in the cutting of electricity bills; increasing pensions and the minimum wage; limiting presidential terms of office and reducing waiting lists for care allowances, in addition to scrapping the harsh Public Safety Reform, known as the “gagging law”. State pensions A reform, which meant annual rises have never exceeded the legal minimum of 0.25% since January 2012, has become one of Spanish society’s greatest concerns. And Sánchez has pledged to ensure they increase, in line with inflation at the very least. Minimum wage Sánchez’s socialist party, PSOE, has insisted for years that the minimum wage needs to increase: at 735.90 euros per month, it is half that of France. And, at 24.53 euros per day, it

works out at just three euros per hour. This is based on workers getting 14 payslips a year: a double one in August and another at Christmas. That means the minimum annual wage is 10,302.60 euros, or 858.55 a month, with 12 payslips. And that is below the minimum, taxpaying threshold of 12,000 euros per annum. Increasing this, as well as setting up a complex package of measures to help young people (under35s) into the jobs’ market in equal conditions, and a reform of the Formación Profesional (FP) system, Spain’s answer to BTECs, are on the agenda of Sánchez, who will seek support from left-wing party Podemos. Also, on family finances, Sánchez wants to address the issue of tenants being priced out of the rental market with everincreasing costs, which, fear experts, could lead to a new housing “bubble” if left unchecked. Minimum rental-contract periods for non-holiday lets, and a cap on deposits, as

well as regulating privateholiday accommodation, offered through schemes such as Airbnb, are in the new Prime Minister’s intray. Electricity prices: these fluctuate constantly, but they are always at least double those of 10 years ago, with bills comprising around 65% taxes and standing charges, plus regulations that make it uneconomically-viable for home-owners to ditch the utility giants and use solar panels. Also, a general failure to take full advantage of renewable energy sources has been among the main features of the PP government’s power policies. Pressure from the left-wing opposition means that utility boards can no longer cut off supplies, because of non-payments, without several warnings over several months, and they must now check with the Social Services whether or not the customer is classed as “vulnerable”. Also, electricity boards now offer a fixed, monthlypayment system, with the

balance adjusted over the following 12 months and reviewed every six. Sánchez will have a huge task on his hands reforming energy legislation alone, without taking into account other aspects of the economy such as crippling IVA rates on certain essentials such as school textbooks, and on the arts and entertainment industry. National deficit Then there is ongoing pressure from the EU to reduce the national deficit, while finding funds to restore Spain’s health service to its place as second-best on the continent. Immunity rights Included on the Sánchez list is getting rid of diplomatic immunity rights, which mean cases against highranking politicians go straight to the Supreme Court. He also wants greater transparency, accountability and financial information to prevent corruption and money-laundering. Catalonia future For all that, one of his

most challenging tasks in terms of political rule and reform will, undoubtedly, be Catalonia: Article 155 of the Spanish Constitution. Stripping the region of its powers has now been lifted, following the swearing-in of Catalunya’s new President Quim Torra. And Sánchez has agreed to talk with the proindependence parties, largely because they backed his no-confidence vote against Mariano Rajoy, the deposed PM. He and his Popular Party had closed ranks permanently, concerning Catalunya’s independence drive, refusing to approach the subject, even. But Sánchez appears willing to relent and talk about it. But will he relax the zealous, judicial, manhunt against Catalunya politicians involved in the disputed independence referendum of 1st October 2017? A reform of the Constitution is long overdue, argue the PSOE, and the Catalunya crisis could accelerate this process now the party is in power.

Fight Like A Girl

Monday 11th June, BBC1, 19.30

By day, 26 year-old Kimberly Benson dons her smart workwear and goes off to her job in the family coach hire business. By night, with big blowdried hair and head-totoe in shimmering Lycra, she steps into the ring as Viper, one of the UK’s top female wresters. The contrast is not lost on her and in Fight Like A Girl, the first in a new run of BBC One’s Our Lives strand, Kimberly explains what it’s like to lead her double life. She reveals everything from how she copes with her rigorous training regime, to how she deals with homesickness, as the sport she loves takes her all over the world. Wrestling promoter Mark Dallas reckons she has it all. He says: “She’s relatable, she’s likeable, she’s a positive role model. She’s got that It-Factor that you can’t teach.” A schedule of up to four fights per week all over the UK can take its toll on Kimberly, who comes from Ayrshire, Scotland. She feels the strain even more when she sets off for Japan to take part in a coveted double world title bout. “Being in the spotlight is the loneliest place in the world,” she says. “It’s hard to build relationships with people when you don’t know which side of the world you’ll be on. You belong to everybody and nobody when you do this.” But she also loves what she does. “Travelling the world and living your dream - you can’t beat that.” Having attracted a massive social media following, Kimberly is mobbed by fans of the cult sport when she’s out and about in Tokyo. But the glamorous side of being at the top of her game couldn’t be further from her mind when nerves set in as she prepares to battle it out for the double-title belt.

Presented by Dermot O’Leary and Kirsty Gallacher, Soccer Aid for Unicef 2018 will see two teams made up of a host of famous faces from the entertainment industry and some of world football’s most iconic legends, all set to walk out onto Manchester United’s Theatre of Dreams pitch on Sunday 10th June. This year’s Soccer Aid for Unicef features an impressive line-up of celebrities and former sportsmen, including: Robbie Williams, Usain Bolt, Sir Mo Farah, Eric Cantona, Gordon Ramsay, Olly Murs, Mark Wright, Brendan Cole, Joe Wicks, Clarence Seedorf, Robert Pirès, Yaya Tourè, Jaap Stam, Patrick Kluivert, Edwin van der Sar, Kevin Pietersen, Lee Mack, David Seaman, Phil Neville, Jamie Redknapp, Danny Murphy, Ben Shephard, Nicky Byrne and Robbie Keane. The UK government will match every £1 donated by the public through its UK Aid Match scheme, doubling the difference for children in danger around the world. Robbie Williams, Unicef UK Ambassador and co-founder of Soccer Aid, said: “I am buzzing that Soccer Aid for Unicef is back. Reclaiming the title for England this year is going to taste so much sweeter with Usain leading the Soccer Aid World XI. He’s giving it all the big talk and showing off his lightning bolts right now, but come Sunday 10th June at Old Trafford, he’ll be left quaking in his big size thirteens! I can’t wait to lead out the England team in what really is a game like no other. With your support, we will help children in danger around the world.” Usain Bolt, Soccer Aid World XI said: “It is my dream to make it as a professional footballer, so to be able to step out onto the pitch at Old Trafford in June, and play against some of football’s biggest legends is going to be remarkable. I enjoy the thrill of competition in front of a crowd, so Robbie and his England team better watch out as I won’t be going easy on them! I’ve got a pretty special celebration planned for when I score, by the way. My team is going to be unbeatable – and Soccer Aid for Unicef is counting on your support to make a difference to thousands of childrenaround the world. Come and join in the fun!”

World Cup 2018

8th June - 14th June 2018

Are England able to Kane bitter rivals? IT is not beyond the realms of possibility that England captain Harry Kane could be lifting aloft the World Cup next month, even though manager Gareth Southgate is keeping a low-key prospect of their chances. He knows, better than most, how recent England teams have performed poorly in their quest to pull off the greatest challenge for international football teams. England go into the event as underdogs, in view of most of the country’s World Cup performances after the successful 1966 team. Yet few international sides are actually dazzling right now, so anything can happen. Teams such as Brazil, Germany and Argentina can never be ruled out, and Belgium, though still awaiting a big-time victory, look good, on paper at least. As one former England footballer says: “I’d rather have Chelsea’s Eden Hazard on my side than have to face him.”

Group A

Group B

Teams: Russia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Uruguay

Teams: Portugal, Spain, Morocco, IR Iran

The opening match of the World Cup sees football fans the world over watching eagerly, because it marks the beginning of another thrilling global event. Hosts Russia will take on Saudi Arabia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, in Thursday’s curtain-raiser. The Saudis will be the first Asian team to compete in a World Cup starter. This event marks Egypt’s first World Cup since Italy 1990. Star man Mohamed Salah (pictured) converted a 94th-minute penalty against Congo to seal qualification to the Finals in dramatic fashion, and get the party started in Alexandria. Saudi Arabia’s Mohammad AlSahlawi netted 16 goals on the road to Russia. The 30-year-old striker finished 2018 World Cup qualifying as joint-top scorer, along with Poland’s Robert Lewandowski and UAE’s Ahmed Khalil. Uruguay are two-time World Cup champions. La Celeste were inaugural tournament winners in 1930, before winning it a second time, 20 years later in Brazil. Egypt’s 45-year-old goalkeeper, Essam El-Hadary, will surpass Faryd Mondragon’s record as the World Cup’s oldest player if he appears in these 2018 finals.

Key Game - Portugal-Spain (15 June 2018, Fisht Olympic Stadium, Sochi) Portugal v Spain is a mouth-watering, opening tie in Sochi, and the gasps could be heard at Moscow’s State Kremlin Palace when these two European heavyweights, and neighbours, were drawn alongside each other in the group. Not a game to be missed! Russia is familiar territory for Portugal because, as UEFA Euro 2016 winners, they secured their berth to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, where Fernando Santos’s side defeated Mexico in the play-off for third place. IR Iran will be looking to Sardar Azmoun for goals. The 22-year-old striker, who plies his trade in Russia with Rubin Kazan, scored 11 goals in qualifying, as did Tim Cahill (Australia), Christian Eriksen (Denmark) and Belgium’s Romelu Lukaku. Morocco topped a tightly-contested African zone Group C to secure qualification to Russia 2018, pipping Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon and Mali.

Group C

Teams: France, Australia, Peru, Denmark

The Denmark-France duel, between two highly-fancied European sides, will probably be given top billing during the third round of games in this group. The countries know each other well, having already gone head-to-head on the World Cup stage twice, both times in the group’s final match. On the road to their sole triumph in 1998, France secured a 2-1 victory, but in 2002, the Danes were 2-0 winners, the reigning world champions flattering to deceive.

World Cup 2018

8th June - 14th June 2018

Group D

Group G

Teams: Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria

Teams: Belgium, Panama, Tunisia, England

Argentina and Croatia, the group’s two strongest teams (on paper), will lock World Cup horns for the first time since 1998, when Argentina edged a 1-0 win. The showdown between Barcelona team-mates Lionel Messi and Ivan Rakitic is one of many intriguing sub-plots to just the second meeting between the nations on the global stage. It could prove pivotal in deciding who qualifies and claims top spot. With France, potentially, lurking in the Round of 16 for the group runners-up, there will be plenty on the line. Iceland and Croatia have met six times in World Cup qualifying in the last eight years, the Croatians winning four. But the Icelanders have fondest memories of the most recent encounter, which they won 1-0 a year ago. History will be made in two of the group’s fixtures, because Argentina have never faced Iceland before, while Croatia and Nigeria will also clash for the first time.

Belgium have been tipped for greatness over several years, thanks to a superb crop of players. But their golden generation are not getting any younger, and their fans will be hoping they can hit their promised heights. That’s always providing they do not stumble against a rejuvenated England team, which has posted impressive results and earned widespread praise. Both teams are outside contenders for the title, and they are sure to serve up an engaging spectacle, particularly as two of Belgium’s key players are based in the English Premier League. But England have lost just one of 21 meetings with Belgium, that sole reverse dating all the way back to a friendly in 1936. Since then, the two sides have crossed paths twice at World Cup finals, drawing 4-4 in 1954, and David Platt’s last-gasp goal earning England a 1990 victory.

Group E

Teams: Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Serbia

The Brazil-Switzerland meeting will be crucial to each team’s hope of winning the section, and, if history is anything to go by, avoiding reigning world champions Germany in the last 16. It also promises to be an attractive encounter, because attack-minded Brazil face a Swiss side boasting plenty of pace, and a fondness for possession. Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia (competing as the former Yugoslavia) were all drawn in the same first-round group at Brazil 1950. The stat - After Russia, who qualified automatically as tournament hosts, Brazil were the first side to seal their place at Russia 2018, courtesy of their 3-0 defeat of Paraguay on 28 March 2017.

Group F

Teams: Germany, Mexico, Sweden, Korea Republic

While nothing can be taken for granted at this level, four-time world champions and current FIFA Confederations Cup holders Germany are expected to top this group. It means that the clash duel between Mexico and Sweden could play a vital role in determining who secures the second Round of 16 spot. It’s an unexpected twist, but Korea Republic have played Germany on three occasions and Sweden four times, and they have contested a barely-believable 12 games against Mexico, who emerged victorious in six of these matches, including a 3-1 success in their only previous World Cup meeting, during France 1998. Having overcome three former World Cup finalists on their way to Russia 2018, Sweden now face a team who have recorded eight World Cup Final appearances: Germany, of course! Many football fans might not remember that Sweden are also former finalists, having lost 5-2 against Pele’s Brazil on home turf in 1958.

Group H

Teams: Poland, Senegal, Columbia, Japan

The clash between Poland and Colombia could prove to be pivotal, for advancement to the knockout stages. Both sides possess an array of talent, with the potential to set the tournament alight, and this matchup at the Kazan Arena may provide the platform for a memorable display, team or individual! Senegal’s only past appearance at the world finals was memorable because they reached the Korea/Japan 2002 quarter-finals. Their maiden campaign included victories over defending world champions France in the group stage, and Sweden in the Round of 16. Japan will be aiming for their best campaign at the global finals. In their previous five appearances, their finest achievement was reaching the Round of 16 as cohosts in 2002, and at South Africa 2010.

“The government doesn’t have a grip on the system and there’s a cost in blood being paid” – Nick Hardwick, former Chief Inspector of Prisons “The increase in the incidence of riots is a clear indication that prisons are in a state of chaos” – Phil Wheatley – former Director General of HM Prison Service This new documentary in the Exposure current affairs strand goes behind bars to show the inside story of the prison system using dramatic footage filmed in jails by inmates. In December 2016, HMP Birmingham became the scene of Britain’s worst prison riot for 25 years as staff lost control of four wings and up to 600 prisoners were let out of their cells. Featuring new interviews with senior figures in the justice system interwoven with footage taken by prisoners on illegal mobile phones, this programme investigates the state of our prisons and ask why the Birmingham riot happened. It shows how the riot unfolded using never previously broadcast recordings of radio messages made by staff during the disorder.

Featuring incredible clips that show you everything that can go wrong when you’re at 30,000 feet, Flights from Hell: Caught on Camera reveals the good, the bad and the ugly we experience on our travels – filmed by the people at the heart of the action. Find out how one man helped save more than 100 lives in one of the most dramatic landings Britain has ever seen, what flying during an engine explosion is like and how an unknown man managed to sneak on an aircraft without a boarding pass – to the shock and horror of the other passengers. Plus, insights from former pilots and crew who know all the secrets of air travel: from how many engines a plane needs to remain airborne to flying through volcanic ash. And of course, amazing videos filmed by aeroplane travellers who might wish they’d taken alternative transport.

By Val Sainsbury Honey has long been a favourite treat for many people, but its health-giving benefits have been brought into question. It may contain Clostridium botulinum spores that can germinate and multiply when ingested, and produce the toxin that causes botulism, a rare but serious gastrointestinal condition. Babies are most vulnerable to this infection between the ages of six weeks and six months, but it can occur earlier, and up to the age of one. For this reason, parents should avoid exposing babies to honey until they’re at least a year old. Other foods and beverages don’t pose a risk; hundreds have been

Not so sweet for the babies tested, with negative results. Breast-feeding mothers who have eaten honey needn’t worry that they can transmit botulism to their babies via breast milk. That can’t happen. Despite the risk honey can present, most cases of infant botulism today appear to stem from contaminated soil. Babies can swallow microscopic dust particles containing the spores. In the US, this risk is greatest in Pennsylvania, Utah and California, where C. botulinum spore-counts in soil are high. The greatest risk of exposure is near construction and agricultural sites, or other places where soil has been disturbed. The first symptoms of infant botulism often include constipation, weakness, floppy movement, trouble sucking or feeding, a weak cry, sagging or closed eyelids, leth-

argy and loss of head control. If you see any of these changes, be sure to seek immediate medical help. Treatment is with botulism immune globulin, given intravenously. Babies do have to be hospitalised for treatment, and must be watched carefully for breathing problems. If infant botulism is diagnosed

and treated promptly, most babies make a full recovery, although this can take several weeks to months. Older children and adults can develop botulism by eating foods that have been contaminated with the toxin. Common sources include homemade foods that have been improperly canned, preserved, or

fermented. According to the US centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is uncommon for shop-bought foods to be contaminated. Symptoms of foodborne botulism generally begin 18-36 hours after eating a contaminated food, although the CDC notes that they can begin as soon as six hours after, or up

to 10 days later. Symptoms include double or blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, trouble swallowing, a thick-feeling tongue, dry mouth and muscle weakness. They stem from muscle paralysis caused by the toxin, and can progress to cause paralysis of muscles used in breathing, as well as those in the arms, legs and trunk. Diagnosis may require a variety of tests including a brain scan, spinal-fluid examination, nerve and muscle function tests, and a test to rule out myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune disease marked by muscle weakness and fatigue. Treatment is with an anti-toxin to prevent further nerve damage, and, if necessary, a ventilator to maintain breathing. Hospitalisation for several weeks or longer may be necessary in severe cases.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke - heat 7 AS Tenerife Loves Karaoke nears the end, two heats have taken place in less than seven days. Last Saturday saw another great night for the seventh heat. Tenerife Loves Karaoke, sponsored by Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, offers a prize package, for the winner, of 1,000 euros in cash, a chance to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a week’s allinclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to create your own portfolio and showcase, and the chance for a career in entertainment. We headed back to a firm favourite of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, Clouseau’s Bar in Palm Mar. There has always been a great atmosphere, and a brilliant local crowd for the contestants to entertain, and this time was no exception. As with all the heats this year, Clouseau’s Bar was full, with not a seat to be had, and we had a great, fun evening. Gordon Slayney, the host for the night, got proceedings underway by introducing the three

judges and telling everyone what they were looking for. He also outlined the voting, and revealed what prizes were available for the night’s winners, and the overall winner. John Luca was first to be called to the stage, and sang a Stevie Ray Vaughan number, Pride and Joy, which immediately set the standard for the evening. Sophie, who, at 14, was this year’s youngest contestant, was next, singing Clown by Emeli Sandé; it certainly got the crowd on their feet. Then came Clive, with Bruno Mars’ Marry Me, to the audience’s delight, followed by Shannon, a 2017 finalist, with her version of Amy Winehouse’s Valerie. This also got the crowd

going. Renie performed Dreamer, and then Muriel took to the stage with a Christina Perri number, Arms. Next was Azrael, who took us to the break with an old karaoke favourite, Que Sera, Sera. The second half got underway with Sara Morris singing Pink’s Who Knew; what a start! Following Sara was Janet with The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta Flack, and then Pete with Kingston Town. By this time, the crowd were on their feet, dancing. Leah was next with a brilliant, entertaining performance of That Don’t Impress Me Much by Shania Twain... and everybody loved it. Brandon Fitzpatrick sang Irish favourite, Dirty

Old Town, ensuring the audience’s participation, and Dave was next with I Like It. Elaine, our last contestant of the evening, finished off with Penny Arcade. After a short break, the judges confirmed who would be going into the sing-off. The successful four were Pete, Sara, Sophie and Shannon, and the audience seemed to agree with the decision. Their second-song choices were given, and the sing-off started with Shannon singing Fugees’ number, Killing Me Softly With His Song. Next up was Sophie singing Sympathy by Zara Larsson, then Pete performed Save The Last Dance For Me by Michael Bublé. Last was

Sara’s rendition of One and Only by Adele. Wow - what a sing-off; the judges had a tough decision to make. After a short break, Gordon invited those in the singoff to join him on stage. This is a competition, and there had to be winners! It was confirmed that the two going into this year’s semifinals would be Sophie and Sara. Both received their heat trophies, and meal vouchers from this year’s sponsor, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. Everyone who participated was brilliant, and all those who came to watch this heat at Clouseau’s Bar had a fun-filled night. Tenerife Loves Karaoke would like to thank everyone who entered at Clouseau’s Bar, the owners and staff who made this, again, another memorable heat, and our sponsor Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. The next heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke was on Wednesday, 6th June at The Sky Bar, Puerto Colon, and you can read all about that below. Rules are posted on Oasisfm.com and terms and conditions apply. Don’t forget - you have to be in it, to win it!

The sky’s the limit THE 8th heat of Tenerife Loves Karaoke took place on Wednesday at Skybar, Puerto Colon, and what a night we had, with Skybar helping to make this year’s competition one of the busiest.

So far, we have had an average of 14 contestants in each heat, and seen 144 songs performed. As in all the heats, a variety of songs were performed, from old to new. Gordon Slaney, the Tenerife Loves Karaoke host for the night, got proceedings underway by introducing the judges: Skybar’s Didi and Sharon, with Paul and DJ Terry Ellens from Oasis Fm. He explained the judging criteria and the format for the night, which entailed everyone singing twice, with the top two going through to the semi-finals. The first person to be called to the stage was Tamara, with a rarity this year, Make You Feel My Love by Adele.

After Tamara came Guido, who, straight away, got the crowd going with My Way by Frank Sinartra, then Roxanne performed Skinny Love by Birdy. Clive was next up on stage and sang the Rod Stewart number, Every Beat of My Heart, followed by Muriel wowing the crowd with Robbie Williams’ Let Me Entertain You - and she certainly did. Becky was called to the stage and sang You and I by Lady Gaga, much to the crowd’s delight, and was followed by Janet singing

Back to Black. Our last three songs, in the first part of the evening, were Mack the Knife, a Bobby Darin number sang by Gary. Mike performed Bad Bad Leroy Brown by Jim Croce, and AZ chose Tony Bennett’s The Lady is a Tramp. During the short break we were entertained by a young lady called Emilia, while the contestants’ second-song choice was given to the judges. The second half of the night got under way, and the singers sang in reverse order. First up was AZ, singing Big Spender, who

got the judges hot under the collar as she threw her bra at them, much to the delight of the crowd. Mike followed with Let Her Go (Passenger), Gary with Wonderwall (Oasis), and Janet with Nights in White Satin (The Moody Blues). Then came Becky, with One and Only (Adele), which got the crowd to their feet. Muriel sang Mamma Do (Pixie Lott), followed by Clive with the second version of the night of My Way. However, this was the Sex Pistols’ version, and Clive’s on-stage antics got him the biggest cheer of the night - what a performance. Our final two singers were Roxanne singing Writing’s on the Wall (Sam Smith), and Tamara with Valerie (Amy Winehouse). After a short break, the contestants were invited back to the stage, and, in true Britain’s Got Talent style, Gordon eliminated them, one by one. Becky was the first contestant to be told that she would be going into the semi-finals, and Rosanne had to wait right to the end for her to

hear the same news! Tenerife Loves Karaoke would like to thank everyone who entered at Skybar, the owners and staff, the judges who made this another memorable heat, and, of course, this year’s sponsor Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. There are only two heats left in which you can take part, the next one being on Wednesday, 13th June at the Albatros Bar, Costa del Silencio. So if you want the chance of winning 1,000 euros in cash, an opportunity of performing at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a week’s allinclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to arrange a portfolio and showcase for you, with the chance of a career in entertainment, enter now! Register directly at the bar, or call 822 14 15 17. Rules are posted on Oasisfm.com. Terms and condition apply. Don’t forget - you have to be in it, to win it!

Older cats It's easy to overlook our fabulous adult cats, all waiting to be adopted. Apart from the major benefit of having been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, these three beauties have all tested negative for feline leukaemia, making them perfect for homes already with cats. Marbles is a cute, 3-4 yearold female Siamese cross. She is very friendly and talkative. Smokey is a lively, eight-year-old. She's great with other cats, and has a velvety, smokey-grey coat. Zuri is ginger-and-white, and about 2-3 years old. He has a long, fluffy coat and show-stopping blue eyes. He loves a cuddle. To arrange to meet any of these cats, please contact us. 8th June - 14th June 2018

WE all love a reason to have a celebration, and the traditional Fiesta de San Juan, between 23rd-24th June, fits the bill perfectly. That’s when locals celebrate with bonfires on beaches all across Tenerife. Goats and other animals are bathed in the sea, which, it is believed, ensure the animals stay healthy for other big events, and much more. There’s actually a big one coming up, which is celebrated, not just here in Tenerife, but across the world in true, Hard Rock Café style. Chrissie and Ray, from Keddy’s Entertainment, thought they would find out some more on Hard Rock Café Tenerife’s forthcoming exciting event! Hard Rock Cafe Tenerife celebrates its 47th birthday here on the island on Thursday (14th June), and it’s ready to celebrate like it’s 1971! On 14th June that year, music-loving Americans Isaac Tigrett and Peter Morton opened the firstever Hard Rock Cafe in London, and an iconic brand was born! After Eric Clapton asked to hang his guitar in that location, Tigrett and Morton had a vision to combine music, memorabilia and food, for a one-of-a-kind guest experience. To honour the brand’s founders, and celebrate its birthday on Thursday, 14th June 2018, Hard Rock Cafe Tenerife will offer the first 47 legendary burgers at the price of the time! “At 47 years old, Hard Rock Cafe locations across the country will help celebrate the brand’s birthday in true rock-star fashion,” said Alex Merchan, Senior Director of Marketing for Hard Rock International. Hard Rock Cafe’s Original Legendary® Burger features a Certified Angus Beef® patty, topped with smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, a golden-fried onion ring, crisp lettuce and vineripened tomato, served on a toasted, brioche bun with Hard Rock’s seasoned fries. Just like the artists, whose memorabilia line the walls at Hard Rocks worldwide, the burgers served by Hard

Master chef set to experiment again FERRAN Adria, acknowledged as one of the top chefs, worldwide, is opening a cutting-edge, food laboratory next year, in his former Catalonian restaurant, El Bulli. The idea has been in the pipeline for the last seven years, since he closed the doors of his iconic, Michelin, 3-star restaurant. The lab, named, appropriately, El Bulli 1846, will be a centre for creating

innovative, gastronomic dishes, and will open between June and October 2019. Ferran said: “For seven years, we have done many things to prepare for this moment.” The 56-year-old is worldrenowned as one of the masters of “molecular gastronomy”, the multi-sensory, culinary art form, which uses scientific disciplines to explore how chemical and physical changes can transform traditional dishes into something extraordinary. And this is exactly what won El Bulli, based in Cala

Montjoi, on the Costa Brava, the “World’s Best Restaurant” title a recordbreaking five times. The lab has been a long time coming, after refurbishment plans had been blocked by officials, concerned about the impact of construction work on the environment, because of its location in the Cap de Creus national park. But, finally, Ferran received planning permission last week, after scaling down his plans. However, he is yet to determine whether the lab will be open to the public.

CD Tenerife review

SO much had been expected, but the final game of the season summed up the previous months of Tenerife’s disappointing season.

This draw suited the visitors because they avoided relegation. But the Santa Cruz stadium was eerily quiet, a mix of a fan group’s silent protest against the club’s top management, and players who looked as though they were knocking off early. Temporary coach Joseba Etxeberria had been confirmed as returning with a one-year contract, and he just might have the ruthless touch needed to weed out the under-achievers, and, also, enforce his ideas on the club’s President, and Sporting Director. Fringe players, such as defender Inaki, keeper Carlos Abad and midfielder Montañes, were given a chance to drink in the last-chance salon. And Carlos was the only one of the trio to offer a defiant cry to stay. But it was never going to be pretty. Albacete scrapped, dived, rolled, and did what they had to do for survival. For the first 10 minutes, the home defence was kept busy, as Moreno skied a shot and Zozulya forced a smart save from Carlos. Tenerife then took over, and Luis Perez set up Juan Villar, who headed over. The Tenerife midfield had a strange appearance. Montañes didn’t seem to have much idea of what role he was filling, and Juan Carlos Real again showed that he’s a bit of a plodder. After 24 minutes, Albacete took a shock lead when a long ball found Cesar de la Hoz, who pulled wide of three markers and struck

the ball between Carlos and the post. Villar, who’s had a little run of starts after his constant injury problems, has shown lethal moments. But on this occasion, he was a bit wasteful, and he might not have done enough to impress the coach. Suso replaced Montañes at the start of the second half and showed some urgency and pace, putting a couple of good crosses into the danger area. Former Tenerife forward Aridane, now with Albacete, managed some testing shots, and he was eventually subbed, to generous applause from the 7,937 crowd. Bryan Acosta, who won Tenerife’s Player of the season award, came on for Juan Carlos, and it was like turning a light on. That’s because anything is possible when he is on the ball. Juan Villar had another soft shot at the keeper, and

Inaki provided a neat ball to Malbasic, who was having a quiet game, compared

with his impressive form recently, and his shot didn’t trouble Tomeu.

Acosta was looking to sign off with something special, and he did just that, picking up a deep pass from Perez, popping the ball up and hitting a sweet volley into the net. Injuries have cursed Tenerife all season and they were down to the bare bones again, C team player Borja replacing Juan Villar with seven minutes left. It was a big leap up for the 19-year-old, who displayed a few good touches and will have savoured the experience. Five minutes of time added on extended the season, but the draw was a fair result. Yet there was frustration among the crowd, at another campaign which just didn’t deliver what they had expected.

Joseba means business

JUST a few hours after receiving a new, one-year contract, CD Tenerife coach Joseba Etxeberria set about laying the foundations for next season. The 40-year-old, former Athletic Bilbao player, arrived in February, missing the January transfer window. But he is determined to make up for lost time.

He is working with the club’s Sporting Director, Alfonso Serrano, clearing out players to make room for a new-look squad. Midfield veteran Vitolo is the biggest name to walk, even though he had another year left on his contract. He turns 35 in September and has played 221 games in two spells with the club. Alex Mula has returned to Malaga at the end of his loan deal, and Samuele Longo, who top-scored last season with 12 goals, has gone back to parent club Inter

Milan, after a loan season peppered with injuries. Goalkeeper Carlos Abad, in search of more regular games, has asked to leave. And though defender Jorge Saenz might stay, the club will listen to any offers for him. Joseba, looking to influence all aspects of the club, wants tougher pre-season friendlies, as well as changes to the technical and medical staff. The players will soon find out, when they to training on 11th July.

Ed heads way forward

MARILYNS ‘A’ definitely mean business this season, Ed leading from the front with a 180 and 104 check-out, as his team visited Palms Pool Bar. They came away with a 7-1 win, and Dennis lit up the show as well, with his own 180. Phoenix Bar won’t be far away, as usual, because they put an unfortunate Red Devils team to the sword, winning 8-0, thanks to their su-

perior finishing shining through again. Suters 20.30 Crew put in another winning performance as they strolled to a 7-1 win at Picasso’s, for whom Chas contributed a two-dart, 104 check-out. Gaffers’ Matt was in top form, helping himself to a maximum, as his team secured a 7-1 success against Buzzin B’s. Sandys welcomed The Loch-In A for the first time, whose Wayne and Paul each hit a maximum for the second time this season. And, despite some good darts from the home

CD Tenerife B

Coaches jump through hoops

The Greek, who has been in negotiations with Malaga to run their bench, has one eye on a move to New York’s NBA team Brooklyn Nets. This time last year, coach Txus Vidorretta quit to join Valencia after a superb season, which saw Tenerife win the inaugural European Champions League. In came Naned Markovich from Bosnia and Herzegovia, who had a wealth of experience in Spain, Israel, and Greece. But after

side, the 6-2 result went to the San Blas boys. Newly-promoted Legends are finding out about the tough life of First Division darts. They hosted Ourplace Playboys, and Nathan’s 157 check-out, alongside

SO much for a restful summer! Coach Fotios Katsikaris jumped ship within days of Iberostar Tenerife’s season reaching an early conclusion in the play-off championship.

The Loch-In Bullseyes

a good start, the team’s form faded and he was gone within two months. Katsikaris was next through the revolving door, his season blowing hot and cold. Yet he had shown promise, and a summer of rebuilding was expected with him at the helm. Now, sensibly, Tenerife’s management want to take stock and not rush into a new appointment. But they have expressed a preference for a Spanish coach this time.

Anxious hunt for goals AN all-out-attack mode must be the order of the day, as CD Tenerife B strive to overcome a 2-0 defeat at SD Ejea in Zaragoza last Sunday. The second leg of the penultimate promotion round, to reach the Segunda B, takes place on Sunday at noon, at the Javier Perez training complex, near Tenerife North airport. This away leg was a story of missed early chances, followed by defensive errors. After 11 minutes, a Tenerife corner floundered outside the box and was intercepted by an Ejea player, whose long ball found a willing and accurate crosser, out on the right. His ball across the goalmouth found Garde free, who scored with ease at the far post. There was another blow a few minutes later

when key Tenerife defender Bolaños went off injured. Tenerife regained their composure, but they were undone again in the 66th minute when they lost the ball on the halfway line. Ramon unlocked the defence, and slipped the ball past unsure keeper Angel

Galvan to make it 2-0. All is not lost, but it will take a big effort by Tenerife Under23s, and lots of character, to claw back the two-legged affair on home soil. The club have hired a temporary, 1,000-seater stand to double the crowd capacity at their training ground.

Arona Combined Events

Record-breaking athletes

SOME 52 athletes, from as far away as Croatia and Brazil, who demonstrated vaulting, sprinting, throwing, and jumping between them, put on a dazzling display for this eighth annual event, at the Antonio Dominguez stadium, in Playa de Las Americas. The two-day competition tested contestants beyond their limits in the gruelling heptathlon and decathlon events. The heptathlon comprises 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin, and 800m. And the decathlon pushes athletes even harder, with 100m, long

jump, shot putt, high jump, 400m, 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500m. Winner of the men’s decathlon was Spain’s Pablo Trescoli, with 7,378 points, followed by 23-year-old Glaswegian runner-up Andrew Murphy, and Tenerife’s Jonay Jordan in third spot. Andrew, enjoying his first experience of the Arona event, said: “I knew other athletes who had competed here, so I had some idea of what to expect. The heat here has been a good experience for me. “My target was to break my personal-best 7,248 points, and then build towards the European Indoor Championships in 2019.” And Andrew did himself and coach Colin Sinclair proud by clocking up 7,350 points. Portugal’s Lacabela Quaresma took the ladies’ senior heptathlon title with 5,901

Ladies’ Football

points, while the Under-18 heptathlon showed there is a bright future for the discipline. Maria Vicente of Spain set a national record of 5,711 points, and Anna McCauley of Lisburn, Northern Ireland, made her mark in second place. Emma Canning, from Edinburgh, didn’t make the podium in the senior heptathlon, but the 21-year-old showed good progress after coming back from injury. “I had a shin injury, so this event was part of my recovery programme,” she said. “My coach, Ian McEwan, is preparing me for my next big target, the Indoor Home

Countries International in Scotland this August. “I have just finished my law studies at Strathclyde, so I can now concentrate full time on my athletics.”

Many of the athletes were making return visits, because the Arona Combined Events is an official competition in the world rankings, and it’s growing in stature each year.

Bluetrail running

Granadilla strike twice

Don’t step on my Bluetrail shoes… ENDURANCE races just keep getting tougher in Tenerife, and they don’t get much tougher than this!

THERE are no boundaries for Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife when it comes to teambuilding, with two new signings already secured for next season. Teenage Venezuela keeper Nayluisa Caceres, who has already played for her

country, has signed a threeyear contract. She will certainly boost the team’s aims of climbing higher than last season’s fourth-place in Spain’s Premier League. Also confirmed is Joyce Magalhaes Borini, originally from Brazil. The 30-year old midfielder, who has plenty of top-level experience, was with Valencia last season.

This weekend sees the third edition of the Bluetrail, and 2,400 runners, from 38 countries, can’t wait to test themselves against nature, on a series of routes. The daddy of them all is the 102km Ultra, starting from Playa Fañabe at 11.30 tonight (Friday), up through Adeje, and Ifonche, and on to Mount Teide National Park. The race ends in Puerto de la Cruz, the official finishing line for all the races. The other routes take place tomorrow (Saturday), with

the Trail, a gruelling 67km challenge, starting from Vilaflor at 6am. Then there’s the 43km Marathon, which begins in La Orotava at 9am, and the 20km Media, setting out at 8am from Los Realejos.

All that action will need a lot of organising, which is why 300 volunteers have been recruited to patrol the routes. And there is also a series of shuttle buses on hand, to round up wayward runners.
