Taxi drivers drugged up AT least three taxi drivers, from Arona and Adeje, have been charged with driving under the influence. They were caught because traffic police were practising stopcheck controls, the most serious case occurring in Las Americas. Arona police, who were assisting with a stopcheck, near shopping centres in the vicinity of the Veronicas and Starco, stopped and questioned a driver. He proved to be under the influence of a narcotic substance, which could cost him a 1,000-euro fine. But the taxi driver had not only been taking drugs. Police noticed a passenger inside the vehicle, with the taxi meter switched off, which is considered illegal. And for this crime, the cabbie could be fined up to a further 3,001 euros. Other stop-check controls, carried out in Adeje, intercepted another two, on-duty taxi drivers. They both tested positive for drugs, one of them for cocaine and the other, marijuana. Each taxi driver will have deducted six points from his driving licence.

Cont. from Front That is why Arico Council is trying, anxiously, to involve Tenerife Cabildo’s Environment Department. Councillors want authorisation for special, non-leak containers with secure lids, which hold organic matter, to be placed in the fishing village of Tajao, where almost 3,000 people visit every weekend to enjoy freshfish dishes.

Poolside man disgusts woman swimmer, 21, but no action is taken

A YOUNG woman has filed an official complaint with the National Police, accusing a British man of masturbating in the public swimming pool at a Los Cristianos sports centre on Monday.

It happened at around 7pm when the 21-year-old woman was swimming lengths and she noticed a group of British men to one side of the pool. She then noticed a fairhaired man, playing with himself, in front of his jokey friends. Sources say the woman left the pool immediately, feeling extremely intimidated. And, as she was leaving the complex, she noticed that the men were still there. As she glanced over, she saw them smiling, smugly, and mocking her. Sources also reveal that

when she got out of the pool, she had asked for help from the person working on the front desk of the complex, as well as the lifeguard. The latter asked the man to get out the pool, but he told the woman there was nothing more he could do. He also said he would not call the police, which is what the woman had requested from both employees. The lifeguard told the woman that it was up to her to call them. The sister of the slighted woman, sitting with her child on a bench inside the

pool complex, phoned their father immediately, and told him what had occurred. He called the National Police, and, before long, officers and the angry father were soon inside the sports complex. Police detained the British man, only for him to be released shortly afterwards. The victim’s father said it was scandalous that workers at a public complex could be passive about a potentiallydangerous situation. He added that it was the staff’s obligation to help the public while they

were inside the complex. He was furious that no action had been taken, saying it had affected his 21-year-old daughter. The irate dad asked: “What effects could these actions have on younger children, who are constantly in and out of the sports complex?” And he has pledged to fight tooth and nail to get the case recognised by the law. Arona Council sources say the individuals have been back to the complex, but they are not welcome at the Jesus Dominguez Grillo sports centre.

Cabildo ‘ignores’ health risk But the local administration is losing patience, because, 18 months after its written request for these special organic-matter bins, to enable the waste to be treated on the municipality’s environmental complex, a response has yet to be received. The Council is hugely con-

cerned because the problem can only get worse, as there will be a significant rise in fish waste from the frequently-visited Tajao restaurants throughout the summer months. At present, restaurants are throwing their organic waste in the normal rubbish bins, which, fortu-

nately, are emptied every 24 hours. But restaurant owners, along with Arico Council, are aware that if the bins are not emptied, regularly, throughout the hot, summer months, there could be real cause for concern. That’s because the fish, decomposing and fermenting,

could create health problems among locals, as well as visitors to Tajao. Sergio Mendez, from Arico’s environmental complex, which is known as Rubbish Mountain, says they have been waiting well over a year for Tajao’s organic matter, because of the growing health concerns.

Cleaning lady has tragic find

NATIONAL Police, in Lanzarote capital Arrecife, have opened an investigation, following the discovery of a foetus in the toilets at the city’s busy bus station. A cleaning lady, who works at the bus station regularly, found the 30-week-old foetus, placed in a papertowel bin in the ladies’ toilets. The stunned woman shouted¸ immediately: “Call the police!” On arrival, the National Police requested the presence of a judge before the case was opened. They want to find the mother, to learn what had happened. They are also concerned for the mother and want to clarify whether the baby was an unfortunate miscarriage, or if the mother had given birth at the bus station. The case has already been presented before the courts.

Bewildered mum is saved by taxi driver A CONCERNED taxi driver came to the aid of a bewilderedlooking mother, aged 27, and her two-yearold son on Tuesday, when he sought help for them from the police. He called the Local Police in Puerto de la Cruz at around 11am to alert them that he was concerned about the pair travelling in his taxi, especially as the woman

was crying, repeatedly: “My son! My son!” And she appeared to be unstable. When the cops approached the vehicle, they realised that the woman, who was noticeably upset, was carrying lots of blankets. Upon closer inspection, they found that she had a foetus of some five months’ gestation, wrapped up in them. The young mum, from La Palma, was staying with family members, who had invited her to spend a holiday with them in Puerto de la Cruz.

The Local Police followed protocol and informed the Social Services immediately, because they were concerned for the woman’s young son, who was obviously affected by the situation. Before long the toddler, who showed no signs of neglect, was handed over to the family members. In respect of the foetus, police are still trying to determine what happened. It is thought that the baby’s birth took place in the early hours of Tuesday, and it was then placed in a freezer.

But because of confusing statements from the mother, the cops cannot determine whether she gave birth at the apartment where she was staying, or in a side street. Specialists from the Institute of Legal Medicine will carry out an autopsy to determine the cause of death, as well as what happened to the foetus after the tragic birth. National Police have now taken charge, and a mandatory investigation is being carried out.

Kids are working with drug-dealers GUARDIA Civil officers, based in Icod de los Vinos, are investigating six individuals from the municipality, including three minors, suspected of drug-trafficking. The probe began last November, when the Guardia became aware of a certain apartment being used as a base, to sell hashish and marijuana, mainly. The officers collected sufficient evidence to enable the Guardia to request a court order to search the properties.

They recovered hashish, as well as important information on the distributors and the traffickers, plus lists of potential buyers. This evidence enabled the Guardia to identify

many people involved. And, along with their IDs, they discovered a second apartment, also carrying out drug-related activities, Police witnessed how people came to the front

door of the apartment, to be sold certain substances by a man, and it became clear to the Guardia Civil that he was involved in home deliveries. Apparently, the second apartment is not connected to the first place, which was investigated, originally. Throughout the probe, more than 40 people have been identified, and, to date, 25 statements have already been taken. Meanwhile, officers are still continuing their long-running, in-depth investigation.

Space-age PM has appointed his star SPAIN’S new President is reaching for the stars, appointing an astronaut as his Science Minister. Pedro Duque, only the second Spaniard to travel in space, and the first man from the country on the moon, has now become the first astronaut with a role in national government. Duque, already a household name in Spain, inspired many schoolchildren, 15 or 20 years ago, to respond with “spaceman” or “spacewoman” when asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. He was not the first Spaniard in space because that honour went to Miguel López-Alegría, but Duque is the best-known figure.

The new Science Minister first went up into space on the trans-orbital ship Discovery, on 29th October 1998, as an engineer. During his nine-day mission, he oversaw the European Space Agency (ESA) experimental module. Fast forward five years and, again in October, Duque left the earth’s atmosphere on the shuttle Soyuz, visiting the International Space Station, working as engineer during his 10-day Mission Cervantes. Few TV viewers in Spain will forget the earlymorning image of Pedro Duque, smiling from ear to ear, as he landed back on earth on 28th October, 2003, in his space suit. And neither will they forget the scenes of him during the mission, floating in zero gravity inside the craft.

The 1999 Prince of Asturias Prize winner left the ESA for two years to work at Madrid Polytechnic as director of operations for the USOC, a role in which he remained until October 2006. Duque returned in 2011 to the ESA, along with his job as an astronaut, heading up the future-projects review team. He will now take a career break from this role to act as Science Minister, which also means putting off his planned move to Malta, where his wife, Consuelo Femenía, has just been named Spanish ambassador for the Mediterranean island. Curiously, he is now leading the government department that funded the Mission Cervantes, which sent him to space, nearly 15 years ago!

Budding project by a secondary school A GROUP of students from Los Olivos secondary school presented two projects to Adeje Environment Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas, “Vigilantes de la Naturaleza” (nature vigilance) and “NaturAdeje” (Nature Adeje), the latter having already won a national competition organised by CEDRO. During the presentation, the groups put forward their proposals and conclusions. Regarding the “Vigilantes de la Naturaleza”, students outlined the need to defend and co-exist with local flora and fauna, if our local environment were to survive.

“Natur Adeje” highlights the value of the natural resources offered by Adeje, and it also encourages the public to ask questions about the resources and changes in the local environment, why they are hap-

pening, and if such changes should and could be avoided. The students have geolocalised 9,000 points of interest in the borough, identifying a huge variety of both indigenous and in-

Pilot whale washed up

THE body of a tropical Pilot whale was found by coastguards, floating in the area of El Mar de Las Calmas, off the coast of El Hierro, between Playa Tejada and Puerto de La Restinger. Experts from El Hierro Government’s Biodiversity Department retrieved the body from the water and transferred it to a landfill, where a necropsy will have been performed, because it is of great importance to scientists to know the cause of death. According to El Hierro President

Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the whale was a male specimen, some 3.5m in length and weighing more than a ton, and it had died recently. In the Canary Islands, there is an important population of this particular species. The whales tend to thrive between La Gomera and El Hierro, and scientists are aware that the whales favour these waters becaue of the immense biodiversity. The archipelago is home to many cetacean populations, and, to date, about 200 specimens have been logged. According to a University of La Laguna scientist, around 100 of these special mammals have made their home in Canarian waters.

vasive plant species. The study was carried out under the criteria laid down by the Nature 2000, which is an EU protection plan, concerning the study of birds and habitats. Councillor Rivero Vargas

said: “This initiative has been seen as a huge boost for the local administration. “You have helped us enormously in creating an Xray of the borough in this regard, and we will be using many of the results you have presented, and examining the solutions you propose.” Some of the suggestions are already mirrored in Adeje Council’s 2020 plan, and Rivero Vargas said that seeing similar proposals from the borough’s younger people was significant. “We are on the right track,” she added. Among the proposals are the vigilance of zones that are home to exotic flora, which may be affected by invasive plants, as well as the replanting and growing of indigenous plants. The students are also suggesting the creation of a volunteer environmental network, working to supply information about local “hot spots”.

NEWS IN BRIEF Squatters evicted in droves

A TOTAL of 17 families, all squatters, were evicted from a San Isidro apartment block on Tuesday morning, following a complaint by the owner, and a subsequent court order. A report by Granadilla Council’s Social Services department says that, together with the Housing Department and Tenerife Cabildo, they have been working together with the squatters since February to try to help them, before the axe fell. Of the families, seven are in a vulnerable situation, with little or no financial resources, and they include children and elderly. These families, prioritised because of their circumstances, have already been rehomed, and the older folk placed in centres for the elderly.

Old folk caught with cocaine

THREE pensioners were arrested by Guardia Civil officers after being caught with cocaine in their luggage at a Spanish airport. The trio landed at Madrid-Barajas from Peru, when the two women, aged 67 and 72, were pulled to one side when customs officers found suspicious white packages in their bags. Four kilos of cocaine powder were seized, as well as two liquor bottles, with cocaine inside, and their companion was also arrested.

Druggies’ 4x4 takeaways

THE Guardia Civil has revealed that at least one 4×4 motor is stolen by drug-traffickers, daily, in the Campo de Gibraltar. The admission came after British expat Andy Mills, 60, (pictured with partner) had his Nissan Patrol stolen from outside his Los Barrios home in Cadiz last weekend. The semi-retired Brit called the Guardia Civil immediately after realising his car had vanished last Sunday. Police found the vehicle abandoned, and stuffed full of drugs, days later in Sevilla.

Rape-charge cops held

TWO Local Police officers, suspended without pay, have been accused of raping a teenager on the Costa del Sol.

The cops, aged 37 and 38, are alleged to have assaulted an 18-year-old girl in Estepona last weekend. According to statements from victim and witnesses, the cops had pulled over a car, in which the girl and two friends were travelling, for a routine traffic stop in the early hours of Sunday. The policemen asked the driver if he had consumed alcohol, and, before he had even answered Yes, he was told to park the car, and was told they should take a taxi home. The officers took the keys to the youngsters’ car, saying they would return the vehicle when they had finished their shift. But moments after the three friends arrived home, the two cops appeared in their car, and, after a brief conversation, they suggested joining the group upstairs. That is where the alleged assault took place, and the officers were arrested by fellow-cops the next day.

THE Russian language centre, based in Callao Salvaje, celebrated the end of the academic year with an event in Adeje’s School of Security and Social Harmony. The graduation ceremony was held last week, in the presence of Social Harmony

Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares. The school has 30 pupils, mostly children of Russian families living in Tenerife, many in the borough of Adeje, where 1,400 are currently residing. The centre has been operating for a number of years, and, as well as teaching the Russian language, it also has lessons on Russian history and culture. This year’s term-ending

event was dedicated to poet Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, considered to be the father of Russian literary language, and the founder of modern Russian literature. Many family members were present for the celebrations, which featured performances by the students. During the event, centre director Elenna Sorokko thanked Adeje Council for its support and assistance during the year.

Two hurt in truck crash A TEENAGER, and her 77-year-old companion, were injured while in a truck containing livestock, on their way to La Orotava’s Romeria festival last Sunday at 11am. It appears that the driver lost control on a steep bend, and the truck, complete with cattle, went over on its side. The accident happened in the El Sauzal municipality on the TF-5, leaving the 17-year-old and the woman pensioner with head injuries. The Canarian emergency services, once told that several people had been hurt when the truck tipped

over on the busy road, dispatched ambulances, along with the fire brigade and police, to the scene. The two women, who had already freed themselves, had severe head wounds.

They were transferred by medics to the University Hospital in Santa Cruz. The truck-driver, who had been injured slightly, received on-the-spot treatment by medics.

Culture, at its best! THE Imoque Cultural Association, formed in Adeje in 2013, hosted a special festival last Saturday in San Sebastián.

It was, said the Association, a showcase for the borough’s cultural roots and heritage. The organisation has worked, since its inception, to keep and promote Adeje’s traditions and folklore. And it staged a display of indigenous animal breeds, with the collaboration of local farmers, as well as hosting craft and artisan stands, food stalls and Canarian folk music and dance. The Imoque festival is an excellent meeting place for residents, visitors, lovers of folk music and craft, and also works to bring together those who live here with those who see our borough as their No.1 holiday destination. Adolfo Alonso Ferrera,

Adeje’s Creative Development Councillor, said: “The work that this group, and similar associations, is carrying out, reflects the commitment the people of Adeje have to their traditions. “And here, in the Council, we are very happy to support this drive to recover our cultural roots.” From midday on Sunday, there was an arts-and-crafts fair, including food stalls with local products, as well as local animal breeds on show. And at 12.30pm, visitors enjoyed a demonstration of different cultural activities, including a workshop on gofio (toasted grain) with H10 Gran Tinerfe chef Esteban Gómez. The afternoon also featured sheep-shearing, Gomeran whistling, Canarian wrestling, and much more. The absorbing event continued throughout the day and evening, with music, dance, food and drink.

The tastiest place for pleasant treat THE 10th Taucho Ethnographic Days, a celebration of local traditions and skills, takes place from today (Friday) until Thursday (21st June).

This year’s wine, cheese and honey will be at the centre of celebrations, because they always take pride of place in the homes of the Adeje midlands. Heritage Councillor Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz said: “These ethnographic days offer a varied and full programme of events to the public, dealing with wine, cheese and honey.

“This ‘meeting’, taking in our traditions, is part of the conservation of our past, undertaken by the people of Taucho, who, every year, have voluntarily given of their time and energy, and they have opened their doors to the visiting public.”

In the last 10 years, the Taucho Ethnographic Days have become something of a cornerstone for the preservation of traditions. Tonight (Friday), events start at 7pm, with the official inauguration of a photographic exhibition entitled “fingerprints of our

past”. This will be followed by a talk on the Guanche families. Tomorrow (Saturday), at 10am, there will be a circular ‘route’ from Taucho-El Grillo- Aponte- La QuintaTaucho. Those interested should register online, at www.adeje.es. On Sunday, from 11am, there will be an exhibition of traditional wine presses, after which local residents will display traditional skills in the making of wines, cheese and honey, in the main town square. There will also be sheepshearing, candle-making from beeswax, a gofio workshop and breadmaking. Later on, the Imoque

cultural association will reenact the days gone by, in the Taucho plaza, and the Tío Victor “cantina” will open from 3pm for a taste of local wines. Sunday will also host artisan workshops, with 26 participants offering different products for sale. On Tuesday (19th June), there will be a traditional workshop for cake-making, and the following day sees a gofio, cheese and honey workshop. Then, at 7pm, there will be a visit to the Tierras de Aponto bodega. The programme ends on Thursday, in the Club el Almácigo, with a talk by Carlos Cólogan Soriano, along with music from Trío Alba Chávez.

Stop them crawling all over your home! YOU can hear them as they scamper around solid floors, and they carry enough diseases to make anyone feel queasy.

And the National Association of Environmental Health Companies (ANECPLA) warns of a “very high” risk of a steep rise in the bug in the coming months. Heat and humidity cause the insects to “leave their natural habitat to find new shelters with water, food and an optimum temperature”. That means they’ll be invading, or at least attempting to invade, homes and restaurants. These vile bugs are able to contaminate food and bring the risk of infections, such as dysentery or salmonella poisoning. The health company says cockroaches are mostly nocturnal, but they are often seen during the day “when the population is

very high, or they need food”. So how can you prevent them from contaminating your home, especially here in Tenerife? To ensure you’re not sleeping with one eye open at night, follow this guide to keep your home cockroach-free! Clean and organised The most important thing is to make sure your home is clean and organised. Generally, you should avoid humidity and inaccessible or hidden corners. The following tips will

also help: *Put mosquito nets over windows and drains *Seal all cracks and holes with putty, especially those near kitchen pipes and bathrooms *Never leave plates, or left-over food, out in the kitchen, and always sweep or vacuum the floor after eating * Do not let waste-paper accumulate, because, with the humidity, this can be an ideal cockroach hang-out *Keep indoor rubbish well covered, making sure that every bin has a secure lid *Don’t leave animal food out on the ground because this can also attract cockroaches Home-made poisons While the previous steps will certainly help the most with prevention, some home-made concoctions will also ward off cockroaches. *Use ammonia, diluted into water, for scrubbing the areas around their natural entry points

*Cucumber slices are also a natural repellent *Others advocate a mixture of boric acid, flour, condensed milk and water If they’re already indoors First of all, stay calm and focus all efforts on locating the epicentre, to be more effective. *Insecticides. Once you have located the source, it is advisable to use insecticides with immediate effects, but don’t use them across the whole house. Their use should be restricted, because they can become toxic if sprayed in large quantities *Use them as you’re leaving home, but never near people, or pets, and, specifically, where their presence has been detected *Adhesive capture traps. These will also help you detect where they hide, and how many there are. There are different types and prices, with effective, natural attractants. They can be placed in the home, and in bars, kitchens, etc.

Driver is killed by speeding vehicle

MARCO Antonio Murcia, 45, was knocked over by a vehicle and killed while getting out of his own car, on a Lanzarote road in Tiagua. The hit-and-run incident, in the municipality of Teguise, happened last Saturday, at 12.30pm. The hapless driver had just parked up his car when he was hit by the motorist, who sped off without stopping to see if he needed assistance. Tragically, Marco died, hours later in hospital, but police found the car, parked up outside a nearby house in La Santa. The Rapid Intervention group, as well as Arrecife traffic police, who were dispatched to the area, detained a man alleged to have committed the crime. He is known to the police because he attacked a Guardia Civil officer last year. On this occasion, he was charged on several accounts, including driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, as well as dangerous driving and manslaughter. He is being held in police custody, awaiting a court hearing.

Tenerife Loves Karaoke - heat 9 TENERIFE Loves Karaoke, sponsored by Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, is a fun competition, open to anyone over the age of 13 who complies with the terms, conditions and rules, posted on www.oasisfm. com. The prizes available for the winner of the 2018 competition are 1,000 euros in cash, a chance to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a week’s allinclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to create your own portfolio and showcase, and the chance for a career in entertainment. This week, we headed to The Albatros Bar, Costa del Silencio, for the 9th and penultimate heat. This venue is a real favourite of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, and has always produced a great night; a great stage for the contestants to perform on, great singers, and, above all, a fun evening. Like every heat so far this year, there was not a seat to be had, and a full card of singers. Gordon

Slayney was the host for the night, and this was his own, penultimate TLK. He got proceedings underway after his opening song, outlining the voting system, and what the judges were looking for. He announced the prizes available for the heat winners, and the overall winner. The night’s first performer was Kim, a young lady from Honduras, who sang If I Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys. Well, that certainly set the standard for the night, because she performed this brilliantly. Following Kim was Sam, who has entered this competition before, but this the first time this year. She picked a George Ezra number, Blame It On Me, followed on stage by Dee, singing a beautiful version of Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack (a favourite

this year). Clive, in yet another great shirt, was then called up, and, after a last minute song change, sang Scorpions’ Wind of Change. Muriel followed Clive, and chose to perform Maria by Blondie. Then it was the turn of Jud, who sang a big song by Joe Cocker, Unchain My Heart. It went down a storm - what a performance! Last before the short break was Robin, not unfamiliar to this competition because she has made it to the finals a few times before. She sang a Rod Stewart classic, Have I Told You Lately That I Love You? And, as they say, the crowd went mad. During the break, the audience was treated to a song by the legendry Cy Benson, who was also on the judging panel. The second

half got underway with a Happy Mondays’ tune, Step On, sang by Connor, and the crowd reverted to where they were when we left off! Janet took to the stage singing a beautiful number by Blood, Sweat and Tears, I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know, followed by Liam doing justice to Robbie Williams’ Feel. Nicky was next, and treated the venue to Stan by Eminem, even singing both parts. Our last two contestants were Craig, who sang It’s The End Of The World As We Know It by R.E.M, and Sammy performing an Elvis number, You Gave Me A Mountain. After a very short break, the judges confirmed that Dee, Jud, Kim and Robin would be going in to the sing-off. All four placed their second song choices, with Jud kicking things off with Rebel Yell, Kim performed Happy, Dee sang Superstar, and Robin chose Sacrifice. With four great performances, this was going to be tight. The sing-off four took to the stage where it was confirmed that the two going into this year’s semi-finals would be Kim and Robin. Both received their heat trophies, and meal vouchers from this

year’s sponsor, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. Everyone who participated in this heat was brilliant, and all those who came to watch had a fun-filled night. Tenerife Loves Karaoke would like to thank everyone who entered at The Albatros Bar, the owners and staff who made this, again, another memorable heat, and our sponsor, Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant. There’s only one more heat left this year of Tenerife Loves Karaoke, and it will he held on Friday, 22 June at Leonardo’s Bar in central Las Americas. If you would like to enter, to be in a chance of winning 1,000 euros in cash, an opportunity to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a week’s allinclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to create your own portfolio and showcase, and the chance for a career in entertainment, call 822 14 15 17, or you can register, directly, at the venue. Don’t forget, you have to sing it, to win it!

EasyJet so quiet on ripping yarns

A BRITISH passenger on an EasyJet flight from Spain is fuming, because his luggage had been ripped to shreds by the time it arrived on the conveyor belt. Harry Drew, 26, was told his hand-luggage had to go into the hold on his return flight from Barcelona to Bristol, but as soon as his bag came into view, he claims he could see, immediately, that it was damaged. The Exeter Council worker was seething after he found most of his clothes had been ruined, including an Exeter City football shirt, given to him by his uncle, who had passed away recently.

“The bag had just come on to the carousel and it was all ripped,” he said. “The bloke at the baggage desk reckoned it could have been chewed up by the conveyor belt. “But no one brought it out and asked whose it was. It was just dumped on the belt and that was it.” Harry says he has tried contacting EasyJet on numerous occasions to complain about the incident, but he hasn’t yet heard anything back. “It’s frustrating, because it’s all my clothes I took away, and they’re not even giving me the time of day,” he added. “I want a response, and some sort of compensation for this. They need to do something about it!”

Safety drill costs a ship firm millions LISA Spearman, a marketing and revenue officer for Royal Caribbean International, has been awarded staggering compensation of over 20 million pounds from the company, after suffering permanent injuries on board one of their ships. She leapt to help a nurse, who had fallen during a safety drill on Voyager of the Seas, but a watertight, sliding door slammed into her hand, crushing two fingers. The New Zealander, who suffered chronic pain syndrome and posttraumatic stress disorder, is still unable to move the fingers properly. The incident happened on board the US operator’s ship, while it was docked in Barcelona. The door was in the process of being locked for the drill, and the ship’s

nurse tried to open it with a handle, while the victim was on the other side. And when the medic fell, Ms Spearman grabbed one of the handles to try to keep the door open. But it slid back into the wall, trapping her hand between the handle and frame, before sliding in and out three more times, breaking her fingers. She won the giant settlement after her lawyers argued that the vessel’s staff

had not been trained how to use the doors properly. They added that the firm had sent Ms Spearman to a Spanish doctor, who splinted her fingers in the wrong position. She was later sacked, but, in 2016, she sued for negligence, failure to provide proper medical care, and constructive dismissal. A court found Royal Caribbean guilty, but the operator intends to appeal the decision, according to reports.

British fugitive caught between good and bad A BRITISH gangster, who went on the run throughout Spain, has taunted investigators by shooting a video guide, showing how to flee the country. Convicted drug-dealer Sam Walker, 35, who has committed more than 100 crimes, is wanted after skipping a court appearance for driving without a licence. His crime list includes jail terms for offences ranging from possession of counterfeit cash, to threatening police officers. And he once hit the headlines over alleged threats to Chelsea FC midfielder Ross Barkley. He was, previously, a member of a mob in his native Liverpool, selling heroin and crack cocaine. Now, though, he has now reached Sierra Leone, in West Africa, after clocking up more than 7,000km during his epic escape from justice. He posted a clip shortly after arriving in Freetown, the capital, where he claims to have met the country’s

Vice-President, Mohammed Juldeh Jalloh. He also boasted: “Better luck trying to catch me when I go out of the country next time, Merseyside Police.” A police official later pointed out that he is, in fact, wanted by detectives in Cheshire. The footage is titled “How

Can’t use an airport coz they will nick you.” It shows Walker flying to Belgium in a private plane, before taking a “little 14hour boat trip” to Morocco. Between these ventures, he is believed to have flown to Portugal, from where he hitch-hiked through south-

ern Spain. He then embarked on a three-day drive across the Sahara Desert, Mauritania and Senegal, before taking another boat, to Freetown from Guinea. Walker claimed to be in Sierra Leone, where his grandfather was born, to help distribute charity donations sent from the UK. He insisted: “I was in a

Catch-22. I had to fulfil my promise to the people in the slums, knowing full well that when I am caught, I will get the maximum sentence of four months in jail, plus two months for missing my court date. “But, to me, the people were more important. The court date could wait. Sometimes in life, you have to do the wrong thing in the eyes of the law, in order to do the right thing.” He also claims to have spent thousands on installing freshwater pipes in the city’s slums after seeing “men, women and children dying”. He added: “I have not just woken up and changed overnight. I am still the same person, and I still do what I do. I know, when I come back to the UK, I will be arrested at the airport and put straight in jail. “I can deal with that, knowing that I have fulfilled my promise to the people in the slums, by giving them a container full of toys, clothes and food. “And I’ve given them fresh, clean water, so no man, woman or child ever have to risk their lives by drinking dirty, sewage-water again.”

Hooded knifemen in threat to garage staff GUARDIA Civil officers are searching for two hooded men, who threatened petrol station staff with a knife on Tuesday afternoon. The men parked their Opel Kadett at the Pican garage, on exit 9 in the Candelaria municipality, on the TF-1 motorway, heading southbound, and headed straight inside the premises. They began intimidating the staff, and a woman working behind the till was ordered, at knifepoint, to hand over the day’s takings. Once they had the cash in their possession, which, fortunately, wasn’t a large sum, they fled. A local man witnessed what had happened and tracked the men back to their car, with the intention of stopping them. But as soon as they realised they were being followed, the pair dashed off, leaving the car behind. It has been taken to the

Guardia Civil headquarters, where a closer inspection of the vehicle is taking place. Witnesses said both individuals were consid-

ered to be young men with Canarian accents. Police are still investigating, and no arrests have yet been made.

Lookalike son cannot pass NIE station test A BRITISH expat, attempting to renew her mixed-race son’s NIE identity document, was told he “didn’t look enough like her”. Suzanna Dave, 45, “burst into tears” as she left Malaga’s Torre del Mar police station, after a civil servant said, repeatedly, that she “didn’t believe” her son was hers. The alleged discrimination has shaken the mother, who is now planning an official denuncia over the incident. “It was so upsetting,” said Suzanne, from Cheshire. “This woman just had it in for us, either because of the colour of my son’s skin, or that he looks Spanish and I’m a ‘guiri’.” Arun, who speaks fluent Spanish, has lived in Spain for 13 years. His father, Sam, who works as a chemical engineer in the UK, is Indian. The problems started when Suzanne and Arun, who is in the middle of sitting

his IGCSEs, attempted to renew his NIE so he could learn how to drive. “I took every document possible,” said Suzann. “We had a lovely woman, and all was going fine until another woman intervened. “She said repeatedly that Arun looked ‘very different’ from me in his old NIE card photo. “She asked what documents we had, and they included

his old NIE, passports and birth certificate. But she said it was not enough ‘proof ’ that he was mine.” Susanne, who said the woman was believed to have a reputation for being aggressive, was told she would have to come back with a ‘full’ birth certificate, because British ones don’t include the parents’ names, and an officially-translated copy.

When Suzanne returned with the new documents, the woman again intervened and said what she had brought was not enough, despite the frustrated mum bringing in every passport since he was born, and full birth certificate. “She just kept saying, ‘I don’t believe he’s your son’”, recalled Suzanne. “It’s so upsetting when you have brought your kid up for 16 years and someone doubts that he is yours.” Suzanne eventually triumphed last Friday, when another employee printed out Arun’s card quickly, before the aggravating woman had come into the office. “They had obviously prepared everything beforehand,” said a grateful Suzanne. “They rushed through our appointment, and we had everything within 10 minutes.” She is now preparing an official denuncia for the Guardia Civil in Malaga, after being told, off the record, that the official had acted “disgracefully”.

Seedy bus driver’s not quite the ticket

A SPANISH bus driver has been detained and charged with dangerous driving after, allegedly, pleasuring himself while at the wheel. The sordid incident took place in Valencia, and the 60-year-old’s arrest came after a young woman filed a complaint with the police. According to a police statement, she sat in a seat to the suspect’s right after getting on the packed local service, and, immediately, saw him leering at her through his rear-view mirror. She then realised he had his trousers undone and was performing a sex act on himself. The horrified woman rang the bell and jumped off the bus at the next stop, before reporting her experience. Investigators contacted public transport firm EMT, with the culprit identified after a short, internal probe. It is understood that the wayward bus driver has been released, ahead of a court appearance.

Preparing for Brexit & residency in Spain

By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

THE Brexit transition period, agreed in March, gives British expatriates, and those wishing to move to Spain, more time to prepare. This was welcome news, but the clock is still ticking to get ready in time, particularly where paperwork is involved.

The key issue for many people is residence. If you are already living here, will there be any problems with you staying after Brexit? If you are still arranging your move to Spain, how can you secure residence in time? The UK and EU27 have committed to maintain existing residency rights for Britons and EU nationals who are “lawfully residing” within either area before the withdrawal date, and they can continue “to live, work or study as they currently do, under the same conditions as under Union law”. Although the official Brexit date is 29th March 2019, the

transition period effectively ‘pauses’ Brexit until 31st December 2020, to enable citizens and businesses to prepare for the changes. If you are settled in Spain before the end of 2020, you should keep the right to stay there for as long as you remain resident. But what does lawful residency mean in practice? How close can you get to demonstrating that in time? Although December 2020 may seem some way away, it is advisable to start the process as soon as possible, rather than risk being caught in an administrative queue of others trying to do the same thing, as the deadline approaches. Beyond Brexit, we do not yet know how acquiring

residency, visas and permits will work, but can expect this to be less straightforward than today. As a foreigner living in Spain, there are a number of things you should do, anyway, to register here, regardless of Brexit. All EU/EEA nationals staying in Spain more than three months should have the residence certificate Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión (also known as Certificado de Registro Comunitario). If you spend more than 183 days here, you are also obliged to register with your local municipal registry (Padrón Municipal). Residents (and Spanish property owners) should have the NIE fiscal

identification number. Of course, if you meet any of the criteria to be tax resident, you also should have formally registered with the Spanish tax office, and submitted annual income-tax and wealth-tax (if applicable) returns. Longer-term residents of Spain can take further steps. If you can demonstrate continuous legal residence in Spain for at least five years, you can apply for permanent residency. If you can do this for 10 years, Spanish nationality is an option, but you would have to renounce your UK nationality first. There may be other steps you can take to help demonstrate your Spanish residence before the Brexit.

Once you are settled in an EU country, existing partners and close family members will be able to join you, even after Brexit. Also, freedom of movement is still under discussion. Take personalised advice to establish what steps you may still need to take to formalise your residency in Spain. Talk to a financial adviser early on for guidance on how your affairs should be structured, to avoid unintended consequences. They can review your tax and estate planning, pensions and investments to help you set up them in the best way for your life in Spain, pre and post Brexit. Pedro making peace with the Catalonians PEDRO Sánchez’s new government has agreed to withdraw its control over Catalonia’s finances as a peace offering towards the politicallyturbulent region. Members also want to “normalise relations” between the north-eastern territory and the rest of Spain. In contrast to the former right-wing PP government’s approach, considered by many to be autocratic, rigid, closed and rule-book loving, the centre-left PSOE have agreed to “dialogue”. That will please Catalonia’s deposed leaders immensely, because they were calling for discussions since long before the disputed

independence referendum, on 1st October 2017. Sánchez will start a tour of Spain, meeting with the leaders of each autonomously-governed region, including new Catalonia President Quim Torra. He says he will approach the subject “with the Spanish Constitution in one

hand and open dialogue in the other”. His predecessor, Mariano Rajoy, always said it was “open to dialogue, but not about anything illegal”, as it considers Catalonia’s separatist bid, meaning that, by default, such dialogue could never take place. Education Minister Sra Celaá announced that

orders had been given to all banks operating in Catalonia to attend to payment orders, placed by the regional government without referring them to the national tax authority for approval first. But she warned that the central government would be the first to know if any public funds were destined towards further, independence moves. The new government will also arrange meetings with various Parliamentary leaders and “social agents”, such as the Health Service and Education community. Sra Celaá said the new government had “hit the ground running”, adding: “There’s no time to stop for a break because we have plenty of work to do, and we’re raring to go.” As yet, details of the new

cabinet’s plans are not set in stone, but Celaá has asked for patience and understanding because they are only a couple of weeks into their roles. But she stresses that their intentions are the right ones. These intentions include getting back the clout Spain had, historically, in the European Union, dialogue with all political forces, in addition to “soothing the pent-up anger that some people in Parliament felt, redressing the sacrifices the people of Spain made during the economic crisis, and restoring, regenerating and modernising Spain.” This week, Sánchez sent a memo to all his new ministers, asking them to govern with “agile proposals” and dialogue “without exceptions”.

The Murder of Rhys Jones: Police Tapes

Managing England: The Impossible Job

Sunday 17th June, BBC2, 21.00

Thursday 21st June, ITV1, 21.00 On the eve of the Three Lions’ opening game, BBC Sport traces the history of one of the toughest jobs in sport - the England football manager. Using rare archive and new interviews with current manager Gareth Southgate and former England managers Sven-Goran Eriksson (pictured), Fabio Capello, Roy Hodgson and Sam Allardyce, we hear firsthand the personal toll that the so-called ‘impossible job’ has taken on some of the game’s most successful club managers. With contributions from former England captains Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Rio Ferdinand, along with key decision makers from within football, we take a closer look at what it will take to end England’s years of hurt.

“I met Mel and Steve (Rhys’ parents), lovely people - their world had been wrecked. And then she got hold of my hand and she was comforting me. And I knew then, more than any other time, that... We had to get people brought to justice for them.” - Former Det Supt Dave Kelly, senior investigating officer in the Rhys Jones case In this new documentary for ITV, Susanna Reid gains exclusive access to recordings from secret police bugs placed in the homes of gang members suspected of the murder of Rhys Jones, who was shot dead at the age of 11. When Rhys was killed on his way home from football practice in 2007, it dominated headlines nationwide. It was later revealed that the bullet that hit Rhys was intended for another victim connected to a dispute between Liverpool gang members, but a code of silence based on fear stopped anyone coming forward to identify the killer Sean Mercer or his accomplices. Susanna speaks to senior police officers involved in the case to piece together the methods officers used to catch the gang responsible, and interviews Rhys’s parents Mel and Steve to reflect on their thoughts on the lasting impact of the case 11 years on. They tell her how they have struggled to make sense of the tragedy in the immediate aftermath and in the years since. Susanna also hears from officers how precarious the investigation was, and learns of the courage shown by the families on the sidelines of gang culture who were prepared to speak out, knowing the cost to their own personal safety. The police tapes taken from the bugs indicate the culture of fear and intimidation that prevailed in that area of the city at that time which prevented officers from identifying a man on a bike seen on CCTV at the murder scene, who was infamously shown on tape at the time.

MOTD Live: Portugal v Spain BBC1, 18.20

Gary Lineker presents live action as reigning European champions Portugal take on 2010 World Cup winners Spain in a mouth-watering Group B clash. Eight years ago in South Africa Spain became the first team to win the World Cup after losing their first group game, but they’ll be aiming for a better start against neighbours Portugal, who the Spanish knocked out at the last-16 stage in 2010. Cristiano Ronaldo was in fine form in the qualifying stages, scoring 15 goals to help Portugal seal their place in Russia, while Spain, undefeated during qualifying, have an embarrassment of riches to call upon including Ronaldo’s Real Madrid team-mate Isco and Manchester City’s David Silva. Commentary comes from Steve Wilson and Danny Murphy.

Henrik thinks he has found the connection between all the victims, but when he adds the suspects to the investigation board he discovers a completely unexpected, but well-known face... There is a deep rift between Saga and Henrik, and he is doing everything he can to avoid her. Saga tries to explain her actions, admitting that she did what she did because she thinks that she is in love with him - but Henrik doesn’t understand. Noticing the atmosphere between them, Lillian questions if they can continue to work together.

Grammar Schools: Who Will Get In? BBC2, 18:00

TV Guide

In the third and final part of this series, students at Erith School and Townley Grammar face their GCSE mocks. At Erith, Denisa is striving to get A grades but the school is experiencing a teacher shortage. The head of science is trying to recruit a new teacher, but until then Denisa must prepare for her exams without a permanent teacher in her science class. Two miles down the road at Townley, the students feel the pressure to get the top grades. Tanisha, 16, needs to get good GCSEs to stay on at Townley sixth form. But she is in competition with students from other schools, like Denisa, who also has her sights set on a sixth form place at the prestigious grammar school. And the headteachers of both the schools have an announcement: they are embarking on an ambitious plan to bring Erith and Townley into the same trust.

The Poldarks determine to get their relationship back on track and the Enyses announce they’re with child. Hugh’s worsening health threatens his chance to stand in the election however, and the prospect of him remaining in Cornwall adds pressure to the Poldark’s fragile marriage. At the Sawle Feast, Tom Harry (Turlough Convery) challenges Sam (Tom York) to a wrestling match. When Emma (Ciara Charteris) offers herself as the prize, Sam accepts. To everyone’s horror Hugh continues to worsen and remains unfit to stand in the election. Falmouth offers the candidacy to Ross (Aidan Turner) but will he accept?

Long Lost Family: What Happened Next ITV1, 21.00

TV Guide

Marion Williams and James McDonnell came to us in Series 7 as a first for Long Lost Family; a divorced couple united in their search for the son they gave up for adoption as teenagers. Simon was found living in Torquay, Devon, and the family were reunited in 2017. But in a dramatic twist, their reunion had consequences much larger than just bringing a family back together. We catch up with Marion, James and Simon to discover how just months after meeting, James would end up saving Simon’s life. Our second story explores the unfortunate truth that not every Long Lost Family reunion runs smoothly. When Ray Jones came to us searching for his brother Arthur in 2016, he was shocked to find 11 other siblings too. But since being reunited Ray has had to face the complicated reality of his birth mother’s life and his other siblings’ childhoods. We join Ray in Liverpool as he spends time with two of his new brothers and sisters, and tries to come to terms with everything he’s uncovered. We also catch up with Laura Aker, who Long Lost Family reunited with her Nigerian father Andy and brother Nten last year. But after their first and only meeting, Andy’s health took a turn for the worse. We join Laura on an epic trip to Nigeria to see her father for a second time, and to meet her huge new extended Nigerian family.

Sue Barker hosts live coverage of the opening day of the FeverTree Championships from the famous Queen’s Club in west London. This year’s star-studded field is the one of the strongest in the tournament’s long history, and includes the likes of Britain’s Andy Murray and Spain’s Rafael Nadal. Murray has won the title a record five times but has spent the last 12 months battling a serious hip problem, which required surgery. Now 31, the two-time former Wimbledon champion will be looking to get back into the groove on the expertly manicured grass courts of Queen’s.

Detox your liver!

By Val Sainsbury THE liver plays the leading role in the process of detoxification of the body, as it turns nutrients into useful substances, and toxins into harmless ingredients.

The function of the liver is extremely important for overall health, so, in order to improve it, you need to occasionally detox it. The liver is located in the upper abdomen, just below the diaphragm. The blood from the digestive organs flows into it, carrying toxins, medications, and nutrients, and it flows bile and blood through to the gallbladder. It is also vital for the metabolising of fat, and other metabolic processes in the body. Liver cells produce bile which is transported to the main bile duct, and it carries it to the small intestine, where it has its role in the breakdown and absorption of fats. This organ also regulates blood-sugar levels by

storing excess blood sugar as glycogen. The liver is pivotal in running the body, helping you digest and absorb nutrients. Therefore, the role of the liver is extremely important for our overall health, so here are some foods which will help its detoxification, and restore its optimal function. Garlic Garlic is the most powerful, natural antibiotic, and it is abundant in vitamin C, B6, selenium and arginine. Selenium boosts the action of antioxidants, and arginine is an amino acid that regulates blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels. Vitamin C protects

against cellular oxidation, and Vitamin B6 acts as an anti-inflammatory. Turmeric The active ingredient of turmeric, curcumin, has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, preventing the conversion of toxins and alcohol into harmful chemicals that cause liver damage, and rejuvenating liver cells. It cleanses the liver and boosts the bile flow. Grapefruit This citrus fruit is packed with Vitamin C, which prevents cellular oxidation, and glutathione helps the liver to produce detox enzymes. A single fruit contains 70 milligrams of glutathione, which helps the tissues to

Child safety

By Emma

from Motorworld

WE never think twice about putting on our seat belts when we get in a car. It is a habit that we have, and we need to encourage our children to do the same. The laws regarding seat belts and child car seats are there for the comfort and safety of those involved. It is important that you ensure your children are travelling in accordance with the law, and that they are in the right seat, booster seat or baby seat. The European law splits these seats into four groups: Group 0 to 0+ baby seats are for babies weighing up to 13 kg (from birth to 9-12 months). Baby seats face backwards and can be fitted in the front or rear of a car using a seat belt or ISOFIX

connector. They must not be used in the front of a car if the seat is protected by an active airbag. Most cars have the facility to turn off this airbag should you need to use the seat for a baby seat. Group 1. Child car seats for children weighing between 9-18 kgs (approximate age 9 months to 4 years), and have their own integral straps. They face forwards or rearwards, and are fitted in the front or rear of a car, using an adult seat belt or ISOFIX connector. Group 2. Booster seats for children from 15-25 kgs (approximately 4-6 years), or depending upon make and model from 15-36 kilos. These may or may not have backs. They are designed to raise children so that the adult seat belt goes safely as low as possible, from hip bone to hip bone. Group 3. Booster cushions for children weighing 22-36 kgs (aged around six years and upwards). They are designed to raise children

as in group 2. You may also purchase a range of multistage restraints which cover groups 1-3, with elements that may be removed as the child grows. The weight ranges overlap to allow some flexibility, when the time comes, to move your child to the next size. Modern booster seats are designed for use with lap and diagonal seat belts only. These cannot be used with adult lap belts. It is important that your child restraint fits well; if not, a child could be at risk of injury in a badly-fitted seat. You should always check that your seat is fitted as intended by the manufacturer, is correct for the weight of your child, and meets the European safety standards. All child restraints must meet the UN ECE regulation 4403 or later-type, approval standard. Any products that meet the standard will have a label showing E and 44.03 or 44.04 or later, and the group or weight range of the child

repair, and the production of important chemicals and proteins. Matcha green tea Green tea has potent anticancer properties, and supports the detoxification and function of the liver. It has concentrated compounds which significantly boost the production of a group of key detoxification enzymes in people with reduced levels of these beneficial proteins. Researchers have discovered that catechins, in amounts equal to that found in 8-16 cups of green tea, supported the production of the enzymes, which are members of the glutathione S-transferase (GST) family, by 80%. This means that the daily consumption of this tea protects against the effects of cancer-causing toxins. Beets Beets are a rich source of betaine a n d

polyphenols, which boost the ability of the liver to produce glutathione and superoxide dismutase, which are key factors in daily detoxification, and prevent damage due to toxic chemicals, like carcinogens. The antioxidant found in beets, Betalains, has strong, anti-cancer effects, while the beet juice helps to prevent skin and lung cancer. Cruciferous vegetables These veggies prevent liver damage due to free radicals, and support the production of detoxification enzymes. So, increase the intake of cabbage, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, and brussels sprouts. Avocados Avocados are loaded with glutathione, which is necessary for liver detoxification, and Vitamins C and E, which act as antioxidants and prevent free radical damage. Moreover, Vitamins E and K have potent anti-inflammatory properties, and thus protect the liver. Walnuts Walnuts are packed with antioxidants, arginine, glutathione, and omega-3 fatty acids, so they effectively neutralise free-radical damage, and prevent fat build-up in the liver. Walnuts also help the formation of strong cell membranes around the liver cells.

for which it is designed. When a car is involved in an accident, we all know it stops abruptly. If the people inside are not restrained, they will crash into other parts of the vehicle itself. Restraints are designed to stop this from happening, and help distribute the forces of a crash over the stronger points of the human body, with minimal damage to soft tissues. Contrary to popular belief, 2-or-3-point seat belts are not designed for children. Children are not small adults; they are proportioned differently, and their key organs are in different places. For this reason, they need a restraining system to cope with the various stages of their growth and development. In infants, a small impact can result in significant injury to their skull and brain. The smaller the child, the lower the force needed to cause injury. The infant rib cage is also very flexible, and impact to the chest can cause compression of the chest wall onto the heart, lungs and abdominal organs.

An infant’s pelvis cannot withstand the forces from an adult restraining system, therefore a rear-facing, childrestraining system is the only option to protect infants up to 13 kgs in weight. Childhood The bone-making process is not complete until the ages of six or seven, and, throughout childhood, the skull is not as strong as that of an adult. The restraining system, therefore, needs to limit the forward head movement in the event of a frontal impact, and provide protection for intrusion in a side impact. Airbags are powerful safety devices, and, as such, should not be used in conjunction with a child seat. In a crash, a rear facing child seat would be hit by a frontal air bag, which could injure the child. The seat would also be knocked up and towards the rear of the vehicle, which means that the seat and child could be completely unrestrained after the first impact. After having being involved in an accident, it is best to replace the car seat, if in any doubt.

Helping Hands clamour for new hospital project

Pictured (L to R) are Rita, Liz, Fatima and Dasha

HELPING HANDS’ leader Liz Montague, and Stephanie Tudge, who runs Association Happy to Help, met Director Rita Álvarez onj Monday at El Mojón’s Centro de Diversidad Funcional to discuss the children charities’ support for the hospital’s new project.

15th June - 21st June 2018

ASLA is a Rehabilitation Centre within the hospital, supporting children of all ages, with various disabilities. And Helping Hands in Tenerife has donated 5,000 euros towards the “Actividades de Psicomatricidad Deportiva” rehabilitation, through sports psychology, for local children. Liz said: “Our thanks to Fatima Rodriguez and her daughter, Dasha, for introducing us to the centre, and also for giving us a wonderful cause to support.”

Update on Brenda WE recently held a fundraiser for Brenda after she snapped her cruciate ligament, and needed surgery to fix it. It took place at Polygon Bar in Los Cristianos, and was very successful. We raised enough money to cover her operation, with a little extra left over which will contribute to future, arthritis treatment. Despite being a very complicated surgery, it went well, and she is now on the road to recovery. She is currently in a foster home, and it will take several weeks for her to get over it completely. Nevertheless, we would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who participated in and attended the event. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-and-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www. k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9

Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker, K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats. Also, to see daily photos of the walks that take place at K9, like the facebook page Voluntarios del Refugio K9. Ways you can help

If you wish to support K9 animal refuge, and contribute towards the safe rescue and adoption of abandoned dogs and cats, we would be very appreciative. You can buy our merchandise (T-shirts, vests, key rings, wristbands and more) at K9, sponsor one of our dogs via our website, and donate money via our website, or cash at our refuge. We also welcome donations of food and other items. Also, you can become a volunteer dog walker by calling us, or simply popping by, during our opening hours. Remember to keep an eye on our website or Facebook page for any fundraising events which you may like to attend. K9 are often looking for people travelling to Germany, and other locations, to accompany dogs which have found new homes outside Tenerife. We are currently looking for flights to Munich or Stuttgart, so, if you are able to accompany our dogs during their flights, please contact us ASAP.

The pride of London

All waiting for homes!

Cancer Bus Charity founder Carol Salisbury (left), with London’s widow, Ann Bowen

POPULAR darts star London, who played in the Oasis Fm League until his untimely death recently, has left a legacy, thanks to his widow, Ann Bowen. She asked people attending his funeral to donate to the Cancer Bus charity, rather than buy flowers, and an excellent total of over 400 euros was raised. Most of it will help keep the Charity Bus running, and a small sum will be put towards a darts trophy, in London’s memory.

THERE are 220 gorgeous dogs at the refuge, waiting patiently for the day they will be lucky enough to be adopted. Some of the dogs in our care have never experienced the love of a good owner, and to sleep in a comfy bed. Many of the dogs get passed by because of their age, breed or size, but they all have one thing in common; an abundance of love ready to give to you, despite some of the horrendous acts of neglect and cruelty that so many have experienced.

Please do adopt a dog - don't buy. Come and visit us if you are thinking of adopting. Our next event A date for your diary is the 7th July which is our next fundraising event. Please pencil it in, and come to support the many dogs in our care. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can

Arona Lions News

Lions have no time to stand and stare! MAY can often be a quiet month in Tenerife, but members of Arona’s Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio Lions Club were still able to keep busy! Apart from manning our charity shop every weekday in Coral Mar, they have been getting out and about, collecting gratefully-received donations for our shop. They have also been liaising with the Hermanos Franciscanos de Cruz Blanca (or White Fathers, as they are better known) in Las Chafiras, regarding the purchase of a much-needed “cama ducha”, which is a “shower bed”. It is for those centre residents unable to sit or stand in the shower. Instead, they are laid on the bed and wheeled in to the shower to be washed. The White Fathers’ old one was rusty and unsafe, but, at nearly 2,500 euros, they simply did not have the funds to buy a replacement.

We are pleased to say that they received delivery of a brand-new one, which has been put to immediate use. The photo shows Club President Ericka Oldbury handing over a cheque to White Fathers’ representative Candelaria. The centre looks after some 30 males, who are handicapped, mentally and physically, and simply do not have any family to look after

them, or have families unable to care for them. It is a beautiful centre, with lots going on to stimulate their residents, including days out and BBQs in the grounds. The staff, some paid and some voluntary, perform an outstanding job of making the lives of these gents a little more enjoyable. Our new recent project, called Lions’ Little Boxes of Love, saw us deliver 20 or so shoe-boxes to the “Soup Kitchen”, as it is known in El Fraile. These are boxes filled with everyday items, which most of us take for granted: toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, shower-gel, comb, hairbrush, razor, shaving-foam and other toiletries. They are handed out to those who most need them, via the “Soup Kitchen” staff. It doesn’t take much to drop a few extra items into your shopping trolley each

week, to help towards filling another box. We have a couple of collection points in Los Cristianos for anyone who wants to help: at the Clouds Pool Bar, at the Heights, and Pablos II. And, of course, any donations can also be taken to our shop at Coral Mar. If there are any other bar or restaurant owners out there who would be happy to become a collection point, please get in touch with our President, Ericka (details below). Without the help and generosity of the local community, we could not have made such a worthwhile purchase. So, to all you folk out there donating clothes, books, shoes, bric-a-brac, jigsaw puzzles, games and household items for us to sell in our shop, we thank you! Those who have any shop items for collection, please see our contact details below,

and we will be happy to arrange this. And, of course, we thank all of you who purchase from our shop, or attend any of our social events. Your support is much appreciated. Keep an eye out for details of our next event, later in the year. Our Coral Mar shop is open every weekday, from 10am until 2pm. To keep up-todate with our activities, future events and any other news, please pop over to https://www.facebook.com/ aronalasgalletaslionsclub and like and share our page. We would be grateful. Interested in finding out more about the Lions? Join us at our monthly meeting, held on the first Monday of every month at 2.30pm in Cath’s Corner, Costa del Silencio. Cancer Bus thank-you to Oasis Fm Darts League and Hole in the Wall

Photo: Sir Old Golfer

THIS week, we received a nice “Thank-You” from the Cancer Bus Charity, at Oasis Fm Darts League’s presentation night, for the 1,470 euros raised by the players. On top of that, the Hole In The Wall charity golf tournament last Thursday (7th June) at Costa Adeje Golf, raised 3,523 euros,

also for the same charity, via raffles and auctions at the event… including £500 for an autographed Celtic football shirt. “I’d like to say a big thankyou to all who contributed

to a great day at our annual tournament,” said organiser Fergal Flaherty. “To our family of friends in the Hole in the Wall, who dug deep in their pockets and helped raise over 1,200 euros towards the total. “To Siroldgolfer Bill, for the great photos; to Europ Foods, Island Beers and VT Management Aberdeen for their contributions; and to Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly, who have always supported us over the years.”

Culinary heaven!

By Jenny T IN the heart of the swanky end of Las Americas you will find the Vegas Grill, a stunning restaurant which only opened its doors last year. We’ve heard great things from friends and colleagues about the fantastic food, service and overall experience. When Adam, my other half, and I were offered the chance to go and try it out for ourselves, we jumped at it! The entrance is opposite the Parque La Paz strip, complete with red carpet, to

really give you that showbiz welcome. All that was missing were the paparazzi! We still felt as though we were about to enter a glamorous awards ceremony, and I was glad I had slapped on some face and done my hair! We were led up the red carpeted stairs and into the restaurant, and were both amazed to see the size of the place, which has a floor space of over 1500m². With such a big venue it would have been easy, without the right attention to detail, for it to feel as though we were dining in a canteen-style environment. However, the décor, lighting, music and open plan somehow made the vast surroundings seem cosy and intimate, with a tranquil atmosphere. Having so much space

meant that there was plenty of room between tables. It is a pet hate of mine to feel crammed in, and having to move my chair in and out all the time, to let people pass. This was not an issue at the Vegas Grill! I was happy to see the kitchen in full view, but it wasn’t a focal point. I had a nosey, and saw

that it was impeccably clean, which is always a good start. We were seated, and immediately offered drinks. There was an impressive wine list, but I opted for a soft drink. My fiancé was impressed by the range of different draught beers, including Fosters, which, apparently, is a great find - and a welcome

change. A fantastic touch was a waitress approaching each table at the start of the evening, to explain the specials on offer. Instead of a chalk-board, or even a typed-up, laminated hand-out, we experienced the detailed descriptions from a knowledgeable member of staff, who had a tablet showing mouth-watering pictures of each dish she was describing. Welcome to 2018! The menu was a good size; not too overwhelming, but with plenty to choose from, and exactly what you would expect from a restaurant named Vegas Grill. There was a good range of starters, including a variety of breads, Thai Salmon fishcakes, mussels and even a Spanish tapas selection for two. We eventually opted for the Cheddar and Bacon Stuffed Mushrooms and the Pil Pil Prawns. The mushrooms were served in a Hollandaise sauce, which complemented the flavour of the cheese and bacon perfectly. The prawns were juicy and succulent, and served in a sizzlinghot, garlic oil. Both were presented beautifully and exceeded our expectations, tantalising our taste buds.

There was just enough garlic not to be too overpowering, and, although I was disappointed when they were gone, they weren’t overfilling; it’s always good for a starter to leave you wanting more. Bring on the mains! Once again, the variety left me pondering about what to choose, with a range of steaks and every imaginable sauce or topping, as well as fajitas, seafood and even lobster. I was tempted to just close my eyes and pick one. I had seen another table with the Chicken Sate, and it looked (and smelt) delicious, but then I fancied something different. I went for the baconwrapped pork medallions, while my partner chose a grilled, fillet steak with a King Prawn on top to make it extra special, as recommended by our waiter. Once again, the presentation was lovely; there is something quirky and tasteful about being served your meal on a chopping board. Although I had ordered a mushroom sauce with the pork medallions, they didn’t really need it because, even without, the flavours were outstanding. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection, and the fried, garlic potatoes were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Just what you need from a potato dish! The vegetables were super fresh and tasty, adding a nice touch of colour to both meals. I always feel I haven’t been too naughty if I eat my vegetables, and can surely, therefore, have a dessert. While we contemplated asking for a dessert menu, a larger-thanlife ball of fun named Jose appeared at our table, to perform

close-up, table magic. He was friendly, funny and happy, and had an infectious smile that we immediately warmed to. We learned he had once been a waiter in the sister restaurant to this one. The management there recognised his ability to perform magic, and he interacted so well with the customers, making the dining experience quite unique. Once our minds had been blown away by Jose’s magical talents, a member of staff came to our table with a dessert trolley. Having them displayed in front of you made it difficult to refuse, and it wasn’t a case of should we, or shouldn’t we? Rather, which one shall we choose? We were going to be good

and share, but changed our minds once we saw what was on offer; chocolate cake, a variety of cheese cakes and a dime cake accompanied by a selection of 12 different ice creams. I chose an Oreo-andcaramel cheesecake to satisfy my sweet tooth, and it didn’t disappoint. I also had a nibble of the dime cake that Adam had selected - wow! What a delicioustasting extravaganza of dessert heaven! Overall, our trip to the Vegas Grill exceeded our expectations, and the knowledgeable and friendly servers made our visit completely enjoyable. The venue was impressive, and the subtle entertainment definitely enhanced our whole, dining experience. We will definitely be back!

BANANAS contain several essential nutrients, and can benefit digestion and heart health, in addition to weight loss. And, as well as being nutritious, they are also a highly-convenient snack. They are among the most popular fruits worldwide, and, though they are native to south-east Asia, they are now grown in many warmer parts of the world. Curiously, there are many types of bananas available, which vary in colour, size and shape. Obviously, the most common type is the yellow banana, which is green when unripe. Bananas contain a fair amount of fibre, as well as several antioxidants, and one medium-sized banana (118gms) also contains: *Potassium: 9% of the RDI *Vitamin B6: 33% of the RDI. *Vitamin C: 11% of the RDI. *Magnesium: 8% of the RDI. *Copper: 10% of the RDI. *Manganese: 14% of the RDI. *Net carbs: 24 grams. *Fiber: 3.1 grams. *Protein: 1.3 grams. *Fat: 0.4 grams. Each banana adds up to about 105 calories, and consists, almost exclusively, of water and carbs. But they have little protein, and almost no fat. The carbs in unripe (green) bananas mostly comprise starch and resistant starch. But, as it ripens, the starch turns into sugar (glucose, fructose and sucrose). But bananas are rich in a fibre called pectin, which

gives the flesh its structural form, as well as antioxidants and several nutrients, that moderate blood sugar levels. However, unripe bananas contain resistant starch, which acts like soluble fibre and escapes digestion. Both pectin and resistant starch may moderate blood sugar levels, after meals, and can reduce appetite by slowing stomach emptying. In addition, bananas also rank low-to-medium on the glycaemic index, which is a measure (from 0–100) of how quickly foods increase blood-sugar levels. The glycaemic value of unripe bananas is about 30, while ripe ones rank at about 60. But the average value of all bananas is 51, which means that, in healthy individuals, they should not cause major spikes in blood-sugar levels. However, this may not apply to diabetics, who should probably avoid eating lots of well-ripened bananas. Dietary fibre has been linked to many health benefits, including improved digestion, and a mediumsized banana contains about 3gm of fibre, making bananas, which have two types of fibre (pectin and resistant starch), a fairly good source. Pectin decreases as the banana ripens, while resistant starch is found in the unripened fruit. Resistant starch escapes digestion and ends up in our large intestine, where it becomes food for the

beneficial gut bacteria. Additionally, some cell studies suggest that pectin may help protect against colon cancer. No study has tested the effects of bananas on weight loss directly. However, bananas do have several features that should make them a friendly, weight-loss food. For starters, an average banana contains relativelyfew calories, just over 100, yet it is also nutritious and filling. Bananas are also a great dietary source of potassium, which is an essential mineral for heart health, especially bloodpressure control. Despite its importance, though, most people are not getting enough potassium in their diet. Bananas contain a decent amount of magnesium, which is also important for heart health, though it is seldom publicised. They are also packed with powerful anti-oxidants, including dopamine and catechins, as are many fruits and vegetables. However, it is a common misunderstanding that the dopamine from bananas acts as a feel-good chemical in the brain. In reality, it merely acts as a strong antioxidant instead of altering hormones or mood. So, all in all, bananas are incredibly easy to carry, and eat. They are easily digested, and, simply, have to be peeled and eaten! Bananas don’t get much easier to eat than that!

Play-offs are too tough CD Tenerife B 1 SD Ejea 2 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife B review

EVEN though Tenerife’s under-23s won their Tercera Division group comfortably, the promotion play-offs proved a bit beyond them.

The other regional groups are always an unknown quantity, and, after losing on the away-goal rule against Inter Madrid, the alternative route proved even harder for Tenerife,

who lost at home last Sunday, to compound a 2-0 loss at Zaragoza’s SD Ejea the previous week. Tenerife, who had to chase goals, had top scorer Giovanni back in the starting line-up, and it seemed to be paying off after a 12th-minute opener. Fede used his speed down the right to set up Marwan for the opening strike, but that was as good as it got. Marwan came close to squaring the home-andaway tie with a second goal, and De Mesa could have easily put it beyond doubt with an away marker, 10 minutes before half-time. Hope nurtured the 1,339

crowd at the Geneto training ground, but time was running out when the visitors’ Lucho made it 1-1 in the 72nd minute. Just three minutes later came the self-inflicted killer blow, as Christian turned a threatening ball into his own net… a sad way to end a glorious season. Some players have reached the age limit for the under-23 team and will move on, while others might get a shot at securing a senior shirt in pre-season games. More eager youth players will step up to give the B squad a new look for next season, and a new dream chase will begin.

Icodense Football

Penalty miss sours party FOOTBALL fever gripped Icod de los Vinos on Sunday as a red-and-blue tide, carrying much anticipation, filled the El Molino stadium. They were hoping to cheer on Glassydur Icodense to promotion from the Preferente into the Tercera Division. That was the 4,000-crowd’s aim after Icodense’s 1-1 draw in the away leg a week earlier. But Union Viera spoiled the party with the only score, an 11th-minute goal. The Gran Canaria team survived a 15-minute game suspension by the ref, and a home penalty, to return to the fourth tier of Spanish football. It was high drama all the way, Union spurning an easy chance in the opening minutes as Alvaro beat the home defence, only to put his shot well clear of the goal. Kevin Perez, playing from the right-back position for the visitors, made plenty of creative runs inside. And when a ball was chipped into the box, he beat the home defence to head his side into a valuable lead. Icodense had to attack, and Samuel showed good skills down the left. However, target man Rosquete wasn’t getting enough support, and attacks kept breaking down. A Suso free-kick offered the reds a good opportunity, but the Union keeper intervened in commanding style.

Icodense 0 Union Viera 1

Union’s Alvaro controlled much of the midfield, though striking a weak attempt wide. He was also in a dangerous position when Ricardo shrugged him off the ball to end the threat. Rosquete tried to prise open the Union defence, and, with his back to goal, he battled to carve out an opening. But he was squeezed out by two markers, who stuck fast to him.

Icodense were playing with their hearts, but Union, who dropped into the Preferente just a year ago, played with their heads and had more experienced players. Icodense tried to beef up their attack for the second half, Armiche moving forward and Suso adding his runs from right-back to pressure Union. It worked well and the reds forced a couple of corners in close succession.

The afternoon then took a surprising turn when a linesman complained that he was being showered with water and beer from a section of the crowd. The referee took himself off, alongside the other two officials, and suspended the game while a frantic discussion took place with home representatives in the officials’ changing cabin. After 15 minutes, two Guardia Civil officers arrived to keep an eye on the area of concern, and the ref then resumed the game. It hadn’t been an overlyphysical game, but with so much at stake it was tense, and the break simply ramped up the tension. A few minutes after the restart, Rosquete, running at the Union defence, was

tugged in the box and a penalty was given. Samuel hit the spot-kick low, but keeper Pablo Cubas dived and smothered the ball, and also the fans’ hopes. To Icodense’s credit, they made a double substitution and renewed their charge. Defender Michel added his height to the attack and put a powerful header just wide of the goal. New addition Yoel fired a high ball in that Cubas had to leap to claim. But there was always a chance that Icodense, stretching to level the game, might let Union through for a second goal. Alvaro underlined the danger with a breakaway, but the home side had keeper Adrian Chuky to thank for a smart save. Icodense launched a last, hopeful, wave of attacks, but headers from Michel and Armiche found keeper Cubas in inspired form. And Caleta hit the same brick wall with his low drive. The final whistle brought elation from Union and despair from Icodense. The lower-league play-offs feed into divisions, with 18 regional sections, and they have more twists than an Agatha Christie novel. It means that Icodense could yet win promotion. If San Fernando are promoted from the Tercera division in next week’s final, Icodense will take their vacant slot in the Tercera Canarian group!

Suters are well-suited!

SUTERS 20:30 Crew maintained their excellent start to the season, with a superb 7-1 success at home against Phoenix Bar. Del Boy was the only Phoenix player to show any resistance, with a 180… and the only doubles the away team found were behind the bar, in bottles! The Loch-In ‘A’ had an impressive win against four-man Legends, Paul hitting a 15-dart leg, and Wayne chipping in with a 157 finish. Unfortunately, he was after a 147, so he will be working on his mathematical skills this week! The Pub, with Sam’s 144 check-out, recorded the same score against Buzzin B’s, who, along with Sandys, are finding it tough at the top level. They failed to take a point when visiting Pas O Nadas ‘A’, who had Daddy Cool weighing in with two maximums. Walter also helped himself to one, and Watties’ 120 finish put Sandys to the sword.

Gaffers visited Red Devils and came home with an excellent 7-1 win, to keep up their challenge for honours. The closest match was at Marilyns ‘A’, where the home team had to pull out all their best darts after finding themselves 2-0 down in both doubles against Picasso’s. However, they recovered well and secured a 5-3 win with the trebles victory, to keep hold of second place in the league. Best result, and biggest shock of the night, came as Dennis and his intrepid Palms Pool Bar team travelled to Our Place Playboys, and won the final team game to earn a deserved 4-4 draw. In Division 2’s top-ofthe-table clash, it was honours even as visitors, The Loch-In Bullseyes, came through in the trebles to claim a 4-4 draw against Ourplace Breakaways. And, at Nauta Nomads, the visitors, Emerald Lounge, snatched the 701 game to claim a share of the points.

Txus bounces back

SO much for waiting to appoint a new coach! Iberostar Tenerife have turned back the clock to welcome the return of Bilbao-born Txus Vidorreta, on a three-year deal. Last year, Txus gave Tenerife their best-ever season, crowned by winning the European Champions League. But he then departed to take the reins at Valencia.

However, the grass was no greener there, and the club decided not to take up their option to offer the coach a second season. Despite his sharp exit, previously, Txus’ return to Tenerife is popular, and his presence will help persuade the club’s better players to stay. It will also attract muchneeded new signings after the poor season they experienced.

Pedro hosts football feast for youngsters CHELSEA star Pedro, a favourite son of Tenerife, never forgets his roots. And tomorrow (Saturday), he will be combining his two passions: football, and helping others. The Pedro Foundation Under-12 National Tournament takes place at the Tamaimo football ground, in the Santiago del Teide municipality, between 9am-9 pm. It features 24 teams, starting with eight-a-side games in groups of four sides, battling it out to reach the knockout stages. Las Palmas and CD Tenerife, together with mainland teams Real Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and CF Balaguer, will be joined by 18 under-12 teams from Tenerife for a day of skill and fun. There will also be entertain-

ment, and prizes via a grand draw. Entrance is by a donation of non-perishable food, which will be distributed to the local needy by Santiago del Teide Council’s Social Services. As many pairs of old football boots as possible will also be welcome, for distribution among African children, so they can also enjoy the beautiful game.

Pedro, born and brought up in Abades, played youth football for nearby San Isidro, before being spotted by Barcelona. The seasoned, Spanish international, who was overlooked for the current World Cup squad, is using the time wisely by returning home for the fund-raiser, as well conducting his summer football school in San Isidro, in the last week of June.

Bluetrail running By Darren Chamberlain

AFTER six months of immense training, running over 600km, as well as working out in the gym, and sticking to a strict diet, it was time to tackle all 67 kilometres of the Tenerife Bluetrail with my wife, Maria. It was an early start, so we needed to get up at 3.30am. Everything was prepared when we went to bed at midnight, but Maria didn’t even sleep. We had arranged a 4.15am pick-up by my running partner, Diego Alverez, and his cousin, Dimitri, who always drives to the bigrun days. We travelled up to Vilaflor, one of the highest villages in Spain, and, thank God, a coffee bar was open, so we grabbed a large Americano. We had to go to the start point through an equipment checkpoint: emergency blankets, whistle, full battery phones plus waterproof jackets… and we were ready to leave at 6 am. I wasn’t at all nervous, because I had trained so hard, and given up, this year, what most people class as fun. The downside is that you’re considered a bore, with no friends, because you’re not drinking alcohol in bars, or eating the food you always want, but you

Off we went, at 6am, drums banging as we set off into the dark Tenerife mountains, with just headlights to view the volcanic rocky floor. Our first achievement was the ascent up to Mount Teide, the highest peak in Spain. It was a hard start, and the air was so thin that, for about 2km of the 17km, we had to walk in the black volcanic sand, which was slipping under our feet. Once under the shadow of Teide, we had to climb another mountain. The sun was up by now and it was hot, around 28 degrees. We could see the clouds below, but the sun beat down on us, all around the National Park for 36km, and six and a half hours. And I couldn’t wait to get off there and descend into the North clouds. At last, the descent, after refuelling with full backpacks of water, a little pasta and fruit in the stomach (energy gel), and down we went, 14km to the mountain called

Blazing Bluetrail battlers

MOUNTAINS, ravines, running, walking or climbing… it was all the same to the intrepid 2,400 athletes, who tackled the Tenerife Bluetrail, multi- terrain running event last weekend. From the southern resorts to Mount Teide national park, they pushed themselves to the limits and beyond, and their winning times were quite staggering to us mere mortals, who get out of breath running for a bus. The men’s 20km Media route was won by Marc Pintach in 1hr 36mins 11secs, and ladies’ champion Sonia Prieto completed the course in 2.07.27. The 43km Marathon was headed by Pau Carell, in 3.40.05, while ladies’ winner Anna Serglund recorded 4.58.52. The 67km Trail found its champion, with David Lutzardo clocking up 6.33.39, and the leading lady was Italy’s Francesca Scriban, in 8.11.12, from one of 38 countries represented in this year’s races. Scaling the highest heights were those on the 102km Ultra. Yeray Duran peaked in 12.57.03, which was a super-human effort, completing the testing terrain in just under 13 hours. Wonder woman Azara Garcia won the ladies’ race in 14.21.52. It was a spectacular success for all involved, and at least two runners, husband-and-wife team Darren and Maria, had plenty to cheer about. They both finished in over 12 hours, and theirs was a special run because they raised around 1,500 euros, on behalf of children’s charity Helping Hands. See main story.

Asomadero, through cloud, drizzle at first, then rain. What a change in the weather and climates. It was refreshing, but dangerous under foot because it was so muddy and wet. My toes were killing me, because the descent was so relentless. My left knee was also killing me, so I began landing on my right foot to take the impact. Finally, at the base of Asomadero, I brought out a spare pair of socks, because, last year, I tore holes in my original socks on the marathon. I did the same here, and my socks were completely ruined. So I swapped them for the fresh ones, and, refuelled with refreshments, I waited for my wife, who turned up five minutes later. We were now ready, after 50km, to take on Asomadero, which is 1,000m high. It was desperately hard on the thighs to climb, relentlessly, with loads of massive steps all the way up. But what we didn’t expect, once up, was the trip down! It was so muddy from all the rain that we couldn’t even stand up. I managed to fall just twice, but what should have been a quick, 15km descent, took us an hour to do 5km. But, at last, we were out the mountains and on the home stretch to Puerto del Cruz beach front. I put on some tunes, which I hadn’t used until now, and for the last 10km, they helped push me. And, in between walking and light jogging until my knees

hurt, I got to the finish line. My run partner Diego finished in 11hr 50min, while Maria caught up in the final stages, so that we could both cross the line, hand in hand, on 12hr 27min. On reflection, this run was the hardest thing I’ve done in sport and life, and I don’t believe I will ever do this distance again. It’s one thing to achieve something, but there must be enjoyment, along with satisfaction. And if you have been following my blogs, or me, then my

story is right up to date. Also, I set out to achieve a goal, which was to raise money, hopefully around 1,500 euros, for a great children’s charity, Helping Hands in Tenerife. Its founder, Liz Montague, has a charity close to my life story, and my heart. I’m not tired, but it’s time to relax, enjoy summer and look for the next challenge, which, I feel, will be next year in July. It’s a 55km ultra in Iceland… well, I did say I wouldn’t be doing that 67km distance again!

Spain boss sacked, before World Cup!

SPAIN’S football chiefs sacked manager Julen Lopetegui, after he was named new Real Madrid boss, just two days before their opening World Cup match with Portugal. Heavy-handed Real Madrid officials announced on Tuesday that Lopetegui would succeed Zinedine Zidane at the Bernabeu, on a three-year deal. The Spanish football federation (RFEF) dismissed the 51-year-old on Wednesday, because the negotiation occurred “without any information to the RFEF”. Spain’s Sporting Director, Fernando Hierro, will take charge of the squad for the World Cup, which began in Russia yesterday (Thursday). Hierro, former Real Madrid and Bolton defender, is in his second spell in his current position, hav-

ing returned to the role in November 2017 after six years. RFEF President Luis Rubiales, who was told of Lopetegui’s new role with Real five minutes before it was announced, officially, said he had found himself in “a very difficult situation”. Lopetegui became Spain’s manager in 2016, following Vicente del Bosque’s retirement, and remained unbeaten through his reign. Spain won 14 out of 20 games with Lopetegui in charge, drawing the others. It has been claimed that senior players, including captain Sergio Ramos, fought for Lopetegui to remain in charge for the World Cup’s duration. They begin their World Cup campaign against Portugal tomorrow (Friday) in a match live on BBC One (7pm kick-off).
