King of Spain is humiliated by brother-in-law

Issue 1060 22nd June - 28th June 2018

King’s relative, Inaki Urdangarin, jailed for five years

THE Spanish King’s brother-in-law, Inaki Urdangarin, has been jailed for nearly six years, after losing an appeal against the Supreme Court. After embezzling nearly six million euros, between 2004 and 2006, from a non-profit foundation he ran in Majorca, he was also fined 513,000 euros because of the public money he earned through fraudulent contracts. Fraudster’s ‘non-profit’ group earned 6m euros Cont. from Front Urdangarin, sentenced to five years and 10 months, is being held at Brieva Prison, which is a small facility, with fewer than 100 inmates, just North of Madrid. But officials say the authorities could decide to send him elsewhere, for security reasons. The 50-year-old, former Olympic bronze-medal winner for handball, who is married to King Felipe’s sister, Cristina, has caused a national scandal. But the Royal House has refused to comment, publicly, about the rejected appeal, and members are on an official visit to the United States. Princess Cristina and Urdangarin have been living

in Switzerland with their four children since 2013. That was the year when a judge, investigating The Nóos Institute, halfowned by the Princess’ husband, also accused her of helping to divert public money into their private accounts.

A new minimum wage hike is given go-ahead

COMPANY representatives and unions have agreed on the new government’s proposed minimum-wage increase, just two days before a planned protest was set to take place across the country. The demonstration was called off last week, even though the new salary requirements had not been confirmed, since Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Employment Minister Magdalena Valerio had pledged to make the changes before marchers hit the streets on the Saturday. Now, employees working a full-time week, defined as 40 hours, net of lunch breaks, cannot be paid less than 14,000 euros a year, or 1,000 euros a month, in 14 payslips, with a double salary in August and at Christmas. It is not clear whether the minimum tax threshold will be altered, since this is currently 12,000 euros, meaning the 2,000-a-year difference between this and

the 14,000-euro minimum wage, would translate to just four euros a month. But the final details are not yet closed. The key step was to get the CEPYME, representing the interests of small and medium businesses, and the CEOE, covering large corporations, and workers’ unions, to agree with the move. As well as the minimumwage hike, companies will now be required to increase salaries by 2% a year, to account for inflation, plus an extra 1% if business is prospering. This is not fixed, however, and is only a guide, because a high number of collective, working- conditions’ agreements, covering industries and provinces, which have been renewed recently, include an average wage index-linking of 1.59% per annum. Unions wanted the annual index-linking figure to be set at 3%. But they have, provisionally, accepted the 2%, plus 1% for profitable company performance.

She was found not guilty of being an accomplice to tax fraud, but she was ordered to pay 265,000 euros in civil liability for benefiting, albeit unknowingly, from illegal gains. The Institute was set up by Urdangarin and Diego Torres, his former mentor and business-school lecturer, as a non-profit consultancy, specialising in arranging sport and leisure events. Princess Cristina was an honorary Nóos board member, while her personal secretary, Carlos García Revenga, served as treasurer. More than a year after the trial began, in Palma de Mallorca, the judges found Urdangarin and Torres guilty of influencepeddling and tax fraud. They were said to have obtained inflated contracts, from the Balearic Islands

Government, for organising two sport-and-leisure conferences, in 2005 and 2006. The money they received for their services, believed to be 6.2m euros, was then funnelled out of the Nóos accounts and into the pockets of Torres and Urdangarin, via a series of shell companies in Belize and Britain. Urdangarin has also been fined 513,000 euros for the public money he earned, via fraudulent contracts. Torres has begun his own prison term, of five years and eight months, even though he was considered to have instigated the moneylaundering scheme. Princess Cristina, when testifying to the court in March last year, said she had known nothing of her husband’s business dealings.

When asked by her defence lawyer why she became the co-proprietor of a company called Aizoon, through which illegal funds were funnelled into their personal accounts, Princess Cristina said it had been her husband’s idea and she had agreed, “out of trust”, adding: “He asked me and I accepted.” She was the first member of the royal family to go on trial in modern Spanish history, and Urdangarin became the first member of a Spanish monarch’s family to be jailed. Meanwhile, Jaume Matas, former Premier of the Balearic Islands Regional Government, was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for ordering the contracts to be given to Nóos, illegally.

Drug-dealer not in the pink now! AMONG the substances seized by police from a Tenerife man, dealing in narcotics, was a designer drug called Tubici, or Pink Cocaine. Although this powder is becoming extremely popular in Spain and across Europe, authorities in Tenerife believe it is the first time the drug has surfaced on the island. A 32-year-old man has been charged by the National Police with drug-trafficking, as well as crimes against public health, He was caught in Puerto de la Cruz when officers stopped his car and used a special drug-catching device to catch him out. They were drawn to a box, hidden in the car boot, which contained 1.5gms

of MDMA, 21 ecstasy pills, 21.32gms of cocaine and 16.70gms of pink cocaine. National Police on the mainland discovered the latter two years ago when it appeared in two drug laboratories, being dismantled by officers in Madrid. The side-effects of pink cocaine include agitation, hallucinations

and difficulty in movements, in addition to depression, insomnia, anxiety, and irregular heartbeats, which can result in heart attacks. A small dose can be the start of many problems because it is a highlyaddictive drug, costing around 60 euros for a minimum dose.

Women killed in head-on collision TWO Columbian women, aged 72 and 45, died on Tuesday afternoon, after being involved in a headon collision on a busy road between El Medano and Los Abrigos, in the La Mareta area. Ambulances, firemen and a medical helicopter appeared swiftly, along with the Guardia Civil.

Firemen had to saw the top of the car off to get to the women, but medics were unable to save the younger one, who had been driving, because she died on impact. Her companion, despite receiving CPR, also died shortly afterwards because her injuries were so severe.

A young child travelling with them was transferred to Candelaria Hospital for immediate treatment to his injuries. The other vehicle involved was a van, occupied by a 68-year-old man and a fouryear-old child, who escaped lightly. They were taken to a nearby medical centre for further observation.

Mentor Day so special for the Canary Islands THE Canary Islands’ non-profit Mentor Day has helped a total of 2,000 entrepreneurs, from various Spanish communities, Europe and Latin America, who have been advised in a magical 34 weeks, since 2015. And that has served to position the archipelago in a prominent place in the global, entrepreneurial ecosystem. These programmes have launched 313 projects, which have led to the creation of 500 direct jobs, in its 30 months of existence. The projects promoted and accelerated belong to the tourism sectors (29%); female entrepreneurship (26%); electronic commerce (24%); energy and industry (23%); social economy (21%); internet platforms (21%); education (17%); gastronomy (17%); ICT (14%) and disability (11%), among others. Regarding the origin of the regions, or countries, where the entrepreneurs come from this year, 46% came from various Spanish regions, and 5% from other countries, especially Latin America. This suggests that more than 50% of the entrepreneurs, who have participated in the weeks of acceleration of Mentor Day, are from outside the Canaries. This has, undoubtedly, helped enrich and increase the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the islands, providing business wealth and

jobs. Entrepreneurs from the 17 countries which have requested advice from Mentor Day, highlights Argentina, followed by Venezuela, Colombia and Bolivia. In addition, entrepreneurs from France, Germany, Mexico, Italy, Lebanon and the US, among others, have also participated. The Canaries offer many advantages for start-ups that want to settle in the archipelago, including: taxation, financing, investments and standard of living. In addition, the entrepre-

neurial ecosystem is being consolidated with new resources and tools, such as acceleration programmes, events, financing, etc. However, many start-ups begin their business outside the Canaries and are unaware of these benefits. Mentor Day organisers want to create a solid system of communication, dissemination and recruitment of start-ups, and projects of national and international entrepreneurs. These will certainly attract this talent which escapes

us now, but could be installed in the islands. It would certainly increase and promote employment, as well as the development of the Canarian economy. Through this development, organisers look for these start-ups and entrepreneurs to be installed in this territory, which can serve as a claim for different organisations which want to collaborate. Being part of this project would mean helping all that scattered talent find a meet-

ing point, with resources for training, support, funding, contacts, etc. The Mentor Day team is looking for a group interested in the topic of startups, and one which is complemented by knowledge of technology, social sciences, languages, marketing and taxation, as well as knowledge of the Canarian market. In other words, people who have lived outside the Islands and know the differences, with respect to other regions or places.

Floor-clause stampede is battering the courts MALAGA is struggling to cope with the thousands of floor clause cases being brought to its courts. The province has the fourth highest number of cases (6,928), beaten only by Barcelona (23,773), Madrid (17,299) and Sevilla (11,056). The news comes after a special court was created with two judges, to deal with floor-clause claims

specifically. Judge Jose Maria Paez has said the situation is “serious”, and that Malaga simply “cannot cope”. The wait is slowly getting shorter, at least in Malaga, where three judges were already dedicated, exclusively, to tackling the cases. In the first quarter of 2018, 286 judgements have been issued in the province and 98.3% of them have been in favour of the defendant. Leading banks introduced floor clauses, which imposed a minimum interest

rate on floating-rate mortgages. They set the limit on how far they could fall, in tandem with the benchmark rate. In practice, this meant that Spanish mortgage-buyers did not profit fully from the record-low interest rate, enjoyed by Spain for several years. But the clauses were ruled illegal by the Spanish High Court in 2013, leading to a stampede of bank customers over the past five years, claiming justifiable refunds.

Cancer-sufferers set for a luxury holiday

CALLAO Salvaje’s Atlantic Holiday Centre hotel has donated week-long, VIP holidays to 12 Adeje individuals, who have been fighting various cancers. They are all under the care of the Spanish Cancer Association and Adeje Council’s socio-sanitary programme. The deserving dozen, who are also dealing with ongoing oncological treatments with members of their family, were invited to receive their vouchers from Adeje Health

Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, and Atlantic’s hotel director, Charlotte Abildtrup, who are pictured with them Their stay in the recentlyrefurbished hotel will be allinclusive, and Cllr Bencomo said: “Last year, we were delighted to be part of this new initiative, which was hugely beneficial to the 10 people who were given holidays. “These people are suffering, not just from cancer, but from high levels of personal stress during the palliative process.” The hotel has increased the number of donated holidays

to 12 this year, and the Councillor underlined the importance of them being able to enjoy their freetime in a qualitative way, which can also help in their recovery. Charlotte Abildtrup, hotel director, said: “We are delighted to be able to help these people, and their families, by offering them a chance to relax and take a break from the stress, related to dealing with their cancer. “We know that these people are fighters; that they have daily challenges to overcome. And that is why, during these summer months, we will be delighted to welcome them here and hope they enjoy all the hotel has to offer.” Councillor Bencomo added: “Gestures such as these go to show that solidarity has no limits or frontiers.” The Hotel Atlantic Holiday Centre offers guests large apartments, freshwater and saltwater pools, a children’s zone, tennis courts, a park, leisure zone, and a gymnasium and restaurants, in addition to first-class service and personal attention.

Stolen jewellery worth a fortune

THIEVES pulled off a staggering robbery, worth millions, at a Lanzarote jewellers in the early hours of last Sunday. Guardia Civil officers in Teguise began an immediate investigation after learning that the stolen items were, together, worth as much as 4m euros, thanks to a large haul of

20,000-euro watches. The Guardia received a call from the owner of the store, in the Tias municipality, after his son told him the alarm company had just alerted him that the shop’s alarms had been triggered. The burglars are thought to have gained access through the roof. Officers, who have had no leads so far, believe three men are involved, and are still hunting them.

NEWS IN BRIEF Pilot dies in sunken plane

22nd June - 28th June 2018

Las Galletas racoon caught

A LOST fire-fighting plane, and its tragic pilot, were found at the bottom of the sea, after three days of frantic searching. A Navy ship discovered the plane, and 46-year-old Antonio Alfaro Martín, near Pollensa’s Cala Sant Vicens, 60 metres down. The experienced pilot was on a regular surveillance patrol when he lost contact, while flying near the Mallorcan village of Valldemossa. A search of the area’s land provided no clues, so the Maritime Rescue services joined the hunt. Drones, ships, and some 300 officers, troops and firefighters searched and investigated, until sonar finally led the Navy mine-sweeping ship, Tajo, to the plane, two miles off the coast. A submarine was sent out to confirm that the plane was the missing, fire-prevention craft, and the crew were able to confirm that a body was inside. Alfaro’s brother, Noel, thanked all those who helped find him, publicly, saying: “You will always be our heroes, and we will be grateful to you for life.”

Teenage thugs target tourists

A RACOON was captured on Sunday morning in Las Galletas, in the Las Rosas area, after being spotted the previous week. A volunteer from the Bombarderos fire service noticed the small animal hanging around his garden, probably helping himself to food and water in the area. The fireman alerted an animal-protection unit, which confirmed that it was a racoon. And members

contacted Seprona, the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection department. Along with Tenerife’s Neotropic foundation, they placed traps to catch the racoon, and succeeded on Sunday morning. The foundation head said that having this particular animal around could lead to serious effects on wildlife and crops. He recalled that, in 2003 in Lanzarote, more than 100 Shearwater birds were killed by racoons. And he also warned that they were opportunists, hunting and feeding on small birds and

rabbits, as well as fruits. If all else fails, the animals will rummage through bins, eating whatever edible rubbish they find… even cockroaches! As well as transmitting diseases, they can, potentially, be dangerous to humans. In 2012, a racoon was captured on a San Miguel golf course, some 4-5km from where the Las Rosas racoon was caught. Spanish law decrees that to possess, sell or transport one of these creatures is prohibited. If culprits are caught, fines can range from between 3,000-20,000 euros.

Motorway car crash injures three people THE Guardia Civil has warned tourists heading to Magaluf about a 20-strong gang of teenagers, who are robbing drunken holidaymakers, and attacking those who resist. They are understood to split into groups of five or six, stalking the resort on Friday and Saturday nights. The Mallorcan youngsters, said to refer to their stealing sprees as “Make a Maga”, operate on the Punta Ballena strip. Police say the group’s tactics include barging tourists, before stealing their bags, jewellery and wallets. Victims who resist are at risk of being assaulted. Residents are pressuring police to take similar action against the gang, as they do against prostitution and bottle parties on the beach.

THREE people were injured when two cars collided on the TF-1 in the early hours of last Sunday.

The impact turned over one of the cars, which smashed into a third vehicle on the southbound lanes at San Isidro. A call was received by the Canarian emergency services just before 3am, and the ambulance services and the Guardia Civil responded immediately. Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the injured

trio were not serious. A 57-year-old man sustained back injuries, another man, aged 40, suffered cuts and bruises to his shoulders and

arms, while a woman, 30, had a mild spinal problem. All three were transferred to nearby hospitals for observation.

SPAIN’S new government is working on a Bill of Law, or Royal Decree, which will again make free health care universal for everyone living in the country, irrespective of status, legal or otherwise. The previous, PP Government, back in 2012, stopped healthcare for anyone not legally resident, except for emergency treatment, as well as care for the under-18s and for pregnant or post-partum women. But hospitals and clinics did not always have the same criteria, about what constituted an “emergency”. An overwhelming number of doctors defied the ruling, which, they said, was “cruel” and “leaving people to die or stay ill”. And they continued to treat anyone who walked through their surgery doors, without asking questions. One of the most antigovernment areas was the Valencia region, where, in 2015, its newly-elected council announced that healthcare would be available free to anyone who needed it, despite being ordered by the State and the courts to follow the rules. Health experts have stressed that restricting care, and expecting those not eligible to pay for it, does not actually save money. In fact, they say it costs more, because most of those left untreated would be unable to fund their own medical attention. They would, say the experts, eventually have become emergency cases, usually costing more to assist because their problems had been left unmedicated for too long. Also, with undocumented migrants refused all but emergency or childbirth-

related care, the risk of infectious, tropical conditions was high. Although contagious or infectious diseases were exempt from the ban, sufferers would not recognise them as such at first, since symptoms may be similar to those of a bad cold or an upset stomach. It meant that when these people were left untreated, because they did not qualify for free healthcare, the diseases had already been passed on before medics picked them up. Cabinet spokeswoman Isabel Celaá said talks were under way with all of Spain’s regional governments, to negotiate the return of public healthcare to everyone, whether or not they had a valid residence permit, or were working, retired, registered on the dole, or in receipt of maternity, paternity or sick pay. “It’s merely a question of political decency,” said Ms Celaá. “And it’s also a mandate of all international organisations, such as the United Nations, the European Union and the

World Health Organisation, as well as an ongoing request from the national ombudsman.” It will take around six weeks before the rules change again, and Ms Celaá said there was “no danger” of any regional health authority refusing care,

after it became universal and, again, free. She added: “No regional governments will fail to comply,” hinting at possible repercussions for any which denied treatment to anyone. Back in 2012, the PP Government cancelled 900,000 SIP, or healthcare cards, of which 150,000 were held by immigrants with no residence permits, and others by people in varying situations, not paying Social Security contributions, such as low-income, cashin-hand workers. European Union citizens were less affected. Those who had never been employed, or not registered as self-employed in Spain, and were not in receipt of a State retirement pension from any country, were, in some regions, able to pay a monthly fee of around 110

euros to guarantee them treatment. And in other regions, they were able to sign up to the system automatically, as long as their annual gross income did not reach 100,000 euros. For non-EU citizens in Spain in this situation, their case was more complicated. And, depending upon their region, they had to rely on private health insurance. Tourists resident in the EU could obtain emergency care through their EHIC cards, defined as any medical issue that could not wait until they returned home, and holiday-makers from elsewhere had to be covered by travel insurance. Holiday-makers will almost certainly have to meet these requirements, but residents, if not registered as such, will be treated. Although it is hoped that the UK will continue to make annual, individual contributions to Spain for its State pensioners’ healthcare after Brexit, the Spanish Government’s new stance sends out a fresh message of reassurance to those who feared they might be left without access to a doctor.

Post office break-in such a pain for thief

AN attempted break-in at a post office in Adeje, during the early hours of last Thursday, ended abruptly after a man was seen jumping over the fence surrounding the building. He smashed a small, vertical window, through which he attempted to squeeze in, to gain entry to the Calle el Grande premises, in the centre of Adeje.

However, in the process, the would-be thief suffered several cuts to various parts of his body. And after failing to crawl through the narrow space, the man fled, leaving a trail of blood for Guardia Civil officers to follow, before it disappeared.

They believe the person could be a young offender from Adeje, and they are now searching for him. Officers are sure the suspect is a recognisable criminal, known to them because of similar crimes he has committed over the last few years.

Sanchez struck an agreement with smaller parties, such as the far-left Podemos and Basque and Catalan nationalists, to unseat Mariano Rajoy. Phew! Island sold, after 30 long years A SPANISH island, which had been on the market for 30 years, has been purchased by a US-Cuban tycoon. Alex Meruelo bought the Illa d’en Colom islet, off the coast of Menorca, for 3.2m euros through his company, Meruelo Investments. But it wasn’t quite that simple, because he had to negotiate with the property’s 16 heirs, as well as outbid a French businessman, to close the deal. Despite rising property prices, the owner lowered his asking price on several occasions, dropp-ing from six million euros in 2010. The new owner is a businessman, born in New York to Cuban parents, who left the Caribbean island in the 1960s

in search of a new life in the Big Apple. After living in several cities across the country, the Meruelo family settled down in Los Angeles. Alex Meruelo started his empire by acquiring a pizza chain, before expanding into the building and property sector in southern California. His holding company now encompasses electricity firms, plus television and hotel chains such as SLS Las Vegas, as well as the former Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City. He is also the first American of Hispanic origin to acquire an NBA team, with a majority shareholding in the Atlanta Hawks. The original proprietor, Anto-

nio Roca Álvarez bought the island in 1904 for the equivalent of around 47 euros. It features a beautiful landscape with two beaches, Tamarell and Arenal d’en Moro. There is a country house on the island, as well as a 100sq/m summer home and a

wooden cabin. There is running water but no connection to the electricity grid, since everything is run by solar energy. The islet is part of the Albufera des Grau natural park, which keeps a tight rein on development or reforms of any kind.

Parachute jumps are so unlucky for some!

NO fewer than 13 soldiers were wounded, following a joint-military exercise between Spanish and American forces in Aragon. One of the injured was airlifted by helicopter, from the San Gregorio National Training Centre near Zaragoza, with doctors later deciding to keep the soldier under observation. A further six Spanish soldiers and six American soldiers had slight injuries following the accident, which is believed to have resulted from heavy winds during a jump.

Two of the soldiers had dislocated shoulders, while another one had a broken nose, and six were badly bruised. They have all been taken to a military hospital, according to Aragon officials. The soldiers were taking part in the “Eagle Eyes” exercise, which is a series of drills, over a fortnight, which ends on Sunday week (24th). The Spanish troops were from the Almogavares VI Brigade, while the Americans were in the 173 Army Parachute Brigade, based in Italy.

This unsettled British trio were cocaine dealers G R A N A D I LL A ’ S Guardia Civil have arrested three people, aged between 19 and 29, all holding British passports, and looking distinctly nervous. They were stopped at 1.30am on 10th June, during a routine spot-check in San Miguel. Officers decided to pull over the vehicle and began asking questions. Then, after realising how unsettled they appeared to be, the officers told the trio to get out of the car, while they conducted a search on the men and their vehicle. One officer, who noticed how one of the men was trying to move something, hidden in his underpants, discovered that he was attempting to hide a small wallet, containing five, 1gm wraps of a white, powdery substance, along with a further 22 doses of another substance. In addition, he had 210 euros in cash, comprising small notes. The substances were analysed and confirmed as cocaine, and the three men, who were detained and arrested, and awaiting court hearings.

Immigrants saved, Don’t gamble on this high-end car in the nick of time IT has been a decade since the Canary Islands went to the aid of a wooden boat, known as a patera, carrying a large number of immigrants.

However, that changed last Sunday when 152 Senegalese, who had travelled across the Atlantic over a six-day period, were rescued. And, despite their lack of water or food, the majority seemed relativity healthy when saved in Gran Canaria waters. Many of the travellers told Red Cross volunteers that their boat had departed from Senegal capital Dakar, some days earlier. But they all felt their luck had run out because the boat had started to drift, and they were running out of food and water. They realised just how fortunate they were when they spotted the rescue ship on the horizon. It was perfect timing as some of the boat people were already losing it, and becoming nervous, because of their precarious

situation. Red Cross President Gerardo Mesa, based in Gran Canaria’s Arguineguin harbour, agreed that luck had been on their side when they were picked up by the Talia Maritime ship. The patera, which later sunk, had only a small motor, which would not have been sufficient enough for the entire journey. The Canary Islands hadn’t received this volume of immigrants in one boat since 2008. Figures recorded by the Guardia Civil show that

almost 32,000 people arrived on the islands by sea in 2006, 12,478 in 2007 and 9,181 in 2008 And, over the past few months, various wooden boats have left the African coast, only to be intercepted by maritime lifeguards. Of the 152 people rescued, just three were woman, and the Red Cross believe there were also 31 female minors in the group. And despite most of the immigrants being in relatively good health, three people needed hospital treatment.

A LUXURY car was stolen and dumped in an Adeje ravine by three men, in response to an unpaid, 15,000-euro, poker-game debt. The car’s owner, who plays professionally, refused to pay up, telling National Police the game was rigged, and that cheating had been going on, from start to finish. The Italian men, aged 39-43, who all have police records, have been detained in Adeje, pending a jail sentence, following charges of extortion, and the violent robbery of a quality vehicle. Cops began an investigation at the beginning of June, following the victim’s official complaint. Finally, they arrested the trio last Friday and presented a report in front of a judge.

Paying the price, drug ‘ghost’ who has raked in fortunes A BRITISH drugs kingpin, who built a 1.4m-euro Costa del Sol mansion out of his ill-gotten gains, has been jailed for 32 years.

James Mulvey “lived like a ghost” for seven years, after fleeing Britain over his role in a 77m-euro smuggling ring. The 42-year-old, from Solihull in the West Midlands, used fake names and stayed on the move, checking into hotels and paying in cash, sometimes via third parties. He also used mobile phones, dubbed “burners”, which he dumped rapidly to avoid being traced. Birmingham Crown Court heard how the haulage boss lived a lavish lifestyle, raking in up to 85,000 euros weekly, and having a Marbella villa, with indoor and outdoor swimming pools, plus a cinema. The father-of-five drove luxury cars, including Land Rovers and Mercedes, and he wore Rolex watches while living in five-star hotels. He also lived in Brazil, Portugal and the Netherlands. At one point, he was overheard bragging to a

girlfriend: “Listen, no one can control me, baby; even me dad and mum will tell ya I’m ****ing nuts.” But the “untouchable” crime lord became imminently touchable after he was tracked down, eventually, following a covert surveillance operation, which saw armed police raid his Lithuania hideout last year. He was cuffed while in his underpants, at gunpoint, and extradited to the UK, where he has now been convicted of four conspiracy charges, after acting as the “linchpin” of

the international plot. Prosecutors added that Mulvey developed a 1,100euro per week cocaine habit. He also set up bogus haulage companies to import “industrial scale” quantities of drugs, from Europe to Britain and Ireland, in 2006 and 2007. He fled to Spain 11 years ago, after 22kg of cocaine and 392kg of cannabis, hidden in metal rollers and worth an estimated 45 million, was intercepted in Belgium. But his children continued to attend private schools

in Worcestershire and Somerset. Judge Mark Wall QC said a probe had revealed 14 previous trips connected to his cartel, during which it is believed that up to 5.5 tonnes of cannabis and 300kg of cocaine entered the UK. He later transported the narcotics in mini-Harley Davidson motorcycles and inflatable sea scooters. The Judge told Mulvey: “I treat it as a representative load for the purposes of estimating the total quantity of drugs traded, as

Sánchez touch rescues the stranded migrants SPAIN’S new Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, agreed last week to give “safe harbour” in Valencia to a stranded ship and two other vessels, carrying 629 migrants in all. And he kept his word, to avoid a “humanitarian catastrophe”, after Malta and Italy refused to take in the Aquarius ship, and its companions, which had many children and pregnant woman onboard. The would-be refugees were initially rescued by the SOS Méditerranée charity, but Italian authorities sent them to Malta instead. Sadly, Malta also refused to let them disembark on national territory. But Sánchez’s Spanish Government volunteered to take them, and all three boats, carrying the abandoned refugees, docked in the port of Valencia last Sunday. First to appear was the Italian vessel Dattilo, which arrived before 7am, and passengers began disembarking immediately.

Aquarius and Orione, another Italian ship, berthed some hours later. Sanchez also promised free healthcare to the asylum-seekers, saying his government would investigate each case. “It is our duty to help avoid a humanitarian catastrophe and offer a safe port to these people, to comply with our humanrights obligations,” he said last week, when news of their plight emerged. Ximo Puig, the Regional President of Valencia, on the same party as Sánchez, had already given authorisation to Spain’s Deputy PM, Carmen Calvo, for

the craft to dock in the harbour of the country’s third-largest city. And Puig criticised other European governments for “abandoning” the migrants in the Mediterranean, calling it “deeply unfair”. Valencia’s Deputy Regional President, Mònica Oltra, from the left-wing party Compromís, recalled that she and Puig’s cabinet had set up a complete refugee settlement system “many years ago”. Town and city councils across the region had set up registers of residents with spare rooms, or properties, that they were will-

ing to put refugees in, and the passenger ferry company Baleària offered boats to bring migrants safely to Valencian shores. But the then PP-led national government would not allow these plans to go ahead, because, it said, refugee resettlement should be “done by the rule book” and that it had to wait for authorisation from Brussels. Yet Valencia has long since complained that it has received just the occasional, single-figure group of refugees, if any, when it is willing, and able, to take in several thousand. A handful of medics from the charitable Doctors Without Borders group had accompanied the migrants. And one of them, David Beversluis, warned that if they were still out at sea by Tuesday, there would not be enough food to go around. Fortunately, the ships beat that deadline comfortably… in the end!

a result of this conspiracy. “On the evidence presented to me at trial, I conclude that the wholesale value of these drugs would have been in the region of at least £17m wholesale, £42m retail for the cocaine, and £60m retail for the cannabis.” The accused smiled at family members when the verdict was read out, and the Judge continued: “You were involved in the largescale importation of these drugs into this country from continental Europe, and its onward transportation to Ireland, where, doubtless, it was to be sold at a great profit. “You gave evidence that you yourself have taken cocaine for many years. You would have been acutely aware of the misery and ruined lives that this drug brings in its wake.” The National Crime Agency (NCA) said in a statement, released in the wake of Mulvey’s arrest, that he was traced, despite changing his mobile phone on a daily basis and using unregistered SIM cards. Investigators also obtained recordings of him speaking about the murder of his Irish cousin, Gerard ‘Hatchet’ Kavanagh, who was shot dead on the Costa del Sol in 2014. In one he was heard to say: “When we first started, there was four bosses, me, Glasses, him who’s just got shot dead, and another kid.” He also spoke of how he feared assassination, saying: “The life I lead, you never know what can happen. I do what I do; people try to kill me.” After the 10-week trial, NCA regional head Andy Quinn said: “Mr Mulvey would classify himself as an iconic, untouchable criminal. The NCA and its partners have today proven that isn’t the case. “He obviously fled overseas, following the conviction of his criminal associates, and, again, probably thought that, out-of-sight, out-ofmind for five years, the NCA would give up. “But we never give up on individuals like Mr Mulvey. We have a long memory.” Five accomplices were jailed for a total of 86 years in 2009 for their parts in the plot, including lorry-driver Geoffrey Edwards and transport manager Barry Phipps, Mulvey’s righthand man.

New robot will solve water-leak problems A NEW repair vehicle, costing 100,000 euros and equipped with the latest technology to detect water leaks, via a robot, camera and a linked information system, has been presented to Adeje Council. The machine will service the five boroughs in which water company Entemanser operates, and, we are told, it will reduce repair times to a three-hour maximum. Attending the presentation were Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, Adeje Councillor for Works and Services; Emilio Fernández, director of Aqualia Canarias, and Francisco Caballo, Entemanser Adeje head of services. Cllr González Cabrera said: “In a borough of this size, it is really important to have a vehicle of this type, to work on detecting underground water leaks in the sanitation networks, which, in Adeje, is

up to 153km of tubing. “The speed with which we can detect leaks is radically improved, and we can solve the problems in a much shorter time, without causing huge problems for the public.” She added: “I would like to extend my congratulations to the company for the investment made in this latest technology, for the benefit of all.” The press were invited to

watch a short demonstration, and Emilio Fernandez told them: “This was a stake for Entemanser to access the best and latest in technology, for the benefit of the public, improving management of the service, and bettering the time needed to detect and repair a fault in the network. “With this kind of technology, when we do detect a leak, or any kind of issue in the net-

It’s Reggae time again THE Feeling Festival, following last year’s highly-successful event, returns to Adeje next Saturday (30th June) with a superb line-up of local and international stars.

It will be staged in the municipal stadium, previewed by two days of events on Thursday and Friday in the CDTCA. Headline performers this

year include Alborosie, Tarrus Riley with Dean Fraser and Israel Vibration, Sumerr (Jamaica), Canarian group One Xe Band, Lioness Den, Isaiah, Don Virgilio, Dada Wanche, A’Jah Porfecía Crew, Lava Sound, DJ Chiqui Dubs (Panama), and Triggafinga Intl Sound (Italy-Greece). The Tenerife Dancehall Crew will also feature, and there will be a gastro-zone and stalls, in addition to rest and chill-out areas, and lots more. During the free cultural days on Thursday and Friday, held in the CDTCA and the FIT (Factory for Tourism Innovation), people can enjoy workshops in yoga and photography, and watch documentaries, as well as break-dance and acrobatic performances, and many more activities. Tickets for Feeling Festival are on sale now, online, through tomaticket.es and ticketbell.es and are 35 euros each. A percentage of each ticket sold goes to projects to help those at risk of social exclusion, as well as other charitable causes.

work, we can now fix it without having to dig up the road, which will avoid more problems for residents. “This also means less rubble, and a huge reduction in the time taken to resolve the problem. We are also improving the quality of our personnel’s work, and their working day, because they won’t have to get down into the water network to make repairs, which will reduce the

risk of any work-place accidents.” The vehicle is equipped with a television camera, designed for underwater work, so that repairs to underground pipes can be carried out without trenches. It also means no traffic blocks, and, in general, there will be no water cuts to the general supply. The vehicle can be parked beside the nearest manhole cover, and the work carried out from there. Two operators will work the machinery, find the leak, fix it, and, once complete, the vehicle is ready to move to where it is next needed. Entemanser was founded in 1987 and taken over by Aqualia in 2005. It is the concessionary charged with managing the water-supply provision in Santiago del Teide, Guía de Isora, Adeje, San Miguel de Abona and Granadilla. It also operates the desalination plant in La Caleta, and manages the water-service supply for the private urbanisation in Golf del Sur.

Franco’s last stand!

PEDRO Sanchez, Spain’s new Prime Minister, has pledged to go one step further than the former government by moving the remains of dictator Franco from the Valley of the Fallen. During his first TV interview, Sanchez revealed plans to have the vast mausoleum converted into a “memorial about the fight against fascism”, adding: “The country cannot allow symbols that divide Spaniards.” The controversial site has faced huge criticism for being the only remaining monument dedicated to a

fascist leader in Europe, in which General Francisco Franco’s body was buried, some 40 years ago. “We don’t have a date yet, but the government will do it,” said the Socialist leader. The Valley of the Fallen (Valle de los Caidos) holds the remains of over 33,000 people from both sides of the civil war. The move comes after deposed leader Mariano Rajoy’s government had blocked prior attempts to exhume Franco’s remains, stating that digging up mass graves of lost loved ones “would reopen a painful part of Spain’s history”. But Sanchez argued: “It’s not about opening wounds; it’s about closing them.”

The dovish ECB meeting prompts GBP/EUR rally By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

THE pound has been putting on a mixed performance in recent weeks, amid a flurry of disappointing domestic data, with only sterling showing any notable movement against a significantly-weakened euro.

GBP/EUR has seen some large swings over the last two weeks, but it is pretty much back to where it began at 1.13, with EUR/ GBP holding at 0.87. Meanwhile, the GBP/USD exchange rate has fallen from 1.34 to 1.31, and the EUR/USD from 1.17 to 1.15. The past couple of weeks have seen the pound suffer from a fair amount of volatility, in the face of some mixed, domestic data, and renewed Brexit uncertainty. In terms of data, the main drag on sterling came as both inflation and wage growth printed below expectations, only some robust, retail, sales figures offering support for GBP. At the same time, the pound has been undermined by growing anxiety regarding Brexit, the Government facing a couple of narrow

votes in seeking to pass its key, EU withdrawal bill. However, GBP/EUR did jump, briefly, despite these concerns. This came in the wake of the European Central Bank’s (ECB) latest policy meeting, with the euro suffering a large sell-off, as the bank pledged to leave interest rates on hold, well into 2019. Thus, it overshadowed the announcement that it would wind down its stimulus programme, by the end of 2018. Meanwhile, the US dollar was able to capitalise on the weakness in the

euro to recoup some of the ground lost, following Trump’s heated G7 summit appearance, and the latest Federal Reserve rate decision. The short-term outlook for the pound looks set to revolve around the Bank of England’s (BoE) latest policy meeting. Markets will be paying close attention to this month’s forward guidance, as they gauge the likelihood that the bank could target a rate-hike in August. Euro sentiment looks set to take another hit this week, with the Eurozone’s

PMI data forecast to reveal another slowdown in growth this month, while a slowdown in inflation in June is also unlikely to do the euro any favours. The US dollar has seen its lead over its peers extended recently, with escalating trade tensions between the US and China helping to drive safe-haven demand. Look for this trend to continue, if Trump appears set to heap further pressure on Beijing, with gains in the USD exchange rate, possibly being driven by the upbeat US economic data

expected over the coming weeks. Mortgage-loan refunds By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

ONE of the most frequent queries received by the Ombudsman is whether there is a deadline that prevents claiming the nullity of the clause, which enforces the mortgagor to pay the costs of formalising the mortgage.

In the case of floor clauses or mortgage expenses, we find clauses that are null and void and, therefore, the legal action is not subject to statutes of limitation. That’s because there is no deadline for filing these claims against banks. Thus, consumers will be able to claim mortgage expenses from their bank, either when the loan has already been paid, or was cancelled, and when the loan has been agreed a “dation in payment” with the bank. That means the debtor gives his property to the bank, in payment of the debt, and the bank gives up claiming further costs to the mortgagee, for his personal debt regarding this mortgage. It leaves the way free for

customers who have paid expenses which weren’t theirs. But some banks, such as BBVA, are responding to claims from customers, saying that, since it is four years since the loan’s cancellation, or 15 years since they signed for the loan, they do not accept having to refund the monies, leaving the judicial way open. Statutes of Limitation of a Nullity Claim Even understanding that a period to be exercised must be applied to the legal action (limitation period), other courts have ruled that the said period cannot begin until the nullity has been declared. That means the four years would start from the moment a Court declared

the nullity of said specific clause. And even understanding that the Supreme Court has already decided that said clause is null (in the judgement of 23rd December 2015), the term would begin the day after that date, and we would have to claim before the Courts until 24th December 24, 2019. And for those who have been fully paid, customers can proceed to claim, if their full payment was made within the fouryear period, prior to 23rd December 2015. Consequences of nullification of an abusive clause Both the Supreme Court and the European Union Superior Court have already ruled on the consequences of declaring

the nullity of a clause, in application of consumer law and Directive 93/13 / CEE. That is, when a clause is declared abusive, the consumer must be returned to the situation prior to the abuse clause, as if it had not existed (that is, a return of sums unduly collected, with interest). If you are in this situation and are considering claiming a bank refund for the said sum, I recommend you start as soon as possible. *Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer, registered at the Bar Association of Tenerife since 1991. Next is the issue of funding: new polling will examine just how much we are prepared to pay to maintain our health service. How can the service cope with an ageing population? Should we be doing more to look after our own health? And are we ready for the ways that new technology, from internet GPs to artificial intelligence, will change the NHS as we know it? How The NHS Changed Our World - Royal Papworth Hospital

Monday 25th June, BBC2, 19.00

In an exclusive programme for BBC East, Dr Giles Yeo discovers how The Royal Papworth Hospital led the way in pioneering heart transplants following the creation of the NHS. Dr Yeo explores the fascinating history behind the hospital, which is now regarded as one of the country’s leading heart transplant centres. It was only the determination of doctors and patients that were able to overcome both technical difficulties and win over public opinion to this new and very controversial new medicine. Sir Terrence English describes how he carried out the country’s first successful heart transplant and paved the way for future transplant surgeons who continued his work. Dr Yeo meets one such transplant specialist - Professor John Wallwork. Professor Wallwork spent more than 40 years working at Papworth, carrying out Europe’s first successful heart and lung operation and doing the world’s first triple heart, lung and liver operation. He explains some of the current challenges faced in transplantation. Dr Yeo also meets Sandy Law, believed to be the world’s longest surviving heart transplant patient, while comedian Eddie Large, who also received a new heart at Papworth, gives a moving account of writing letters to relatives of the donor who saved his life. Dr Yeo also takes a look inside the state-of-the-art building in Cambridge that will become the new home for this historic hospital later this year.

The People Vs The NHS: Who Gets The Drugs? Wednesday 27th June, BBC2, 21.00

PrEP is a drug that experts believe could end the HIV and AIDS epidemic. But in 2016, after 18 months of consultation, the NHS made the controversial decision that they could not fund it. Thirty five million people have died from HIV and AIDS, but today advancements in medical science mean that HIV no longer has to be a death sentence, as Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) prevents the virus developing in the body. This is the incredible story of the battle for PrEP on the NHS: a legal fight which saw doctors, activists and AIDS charities come together to overturn the NHS decision. It was the start of an emotive battle which would see the cost of the treatment publicly pitted against the cost of prosthetic limbs, blood cancer drugs and drugs for children with cystic fibrosis. At the heart of the story is one man, Greg Owen, pictured, who helped stop thousands becoming HIV positive by setting up a website which allowed people to buy generic PrEP from drug manufacturers in India. Despite being homeless and without a wage, Greg found himself running Britain’s main gateway to PrEP from his mother’s kitchen in Belfast. Part of the BBC’s NHS at 70 season marking the 70th anniversary of the NHS, this film explores the hugely complex decisions facing a cash-strapped health service in one of the most difficult periods in its history. Made by Pulse Films in partnership with the Open University.

Tommy’s mother, who is still in police custody, refuses to cooperate and doesn’t talk to Saga or Jonas. The pressure mounts as they can’t continue to hold her if they don’t find any evidence. Niels Thormod’s name surfaces in the investigation again, as it turns out that he hired a private detective hoping that he could find out something more than the police - and now the private detective has been reported missing. Lillian is hard-pressed to solve the case and it appears there is an inside source leaking information about the investigation. Saga is called to Sweden when a young man wants to confess to killing his father, but she realises that his story has a connection to Henrik’s family’s past.

Brazil v Costa Rica: The great Ronaldo scored twice as Brazil beat Costa Rica 5-2 the last time the two sides met at a World Cup in the group stages of the 2002 tournament. The Brazilians went on to lift the trophy that year and they will need the likes of Neymar and Philippe Coutinho firing on all cylinders if they’re going to repeat the feat this time around. As they showed in their run up to the quarter finals four years ago, Costa Rica will relish the chance to upset the odds. Mark Pougatch is joined by Martin O’Neill, Roy Keane and Patrice Evra in the studio with commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Glenn Hoddle.

MOTD Live: England v Panama c h o i c e BBC1, 12.15

Gary Lineker introduces live coverage of England’s second World Cup game, with the Three Lions playing their first-ever match against World Cup debutants Panama. Panama qualified for Russia in dramatic style, with Roman Torres scoring an 88th minute winner against Costa Rica, a result which helped eliminate the USA. They began as one of the tournament outsiders, but will be aware that England suffered a painful defeat against perceived ‘minnows’ at Euro 2016, with the Three Lions bowing out against Iceland in the last 16. However, new boss Gareth Southgate will be optimistic of a better showing this summer, especially if Harry Kane can reproduce his prolific form for Tottenham. Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Alan Shearer provide expert analysis, while commentary comes from Guy Mowbray and Danny Murphy.

MOTD Live: Spain v Morocco BBC1, 18.30

00:05.........Police UK: Armed and Deadly

Gary Lineker presents live coverage of the final round of matches in Group B, with 2010 champions Spain taking on North African neighbours Morocco in Kaliningrad. Spain won three successive international tournaments from 2008 to 2012 but will be hoping for a return to form after disappointing showings at the 2014 World Cup and at Euro 2016. New coach Julen Lopetegui boasts a formidable array of outfield options plus Manchester United’s David de Gea, who is one of the world’s best goalkeepers. Morocco are hoping for a commanding performance from their captain, Juventus centre-back Medhi Benatia, as they aim to reach the knock-out stage for only the second time in their history. Didier Drogba, Alan Shearer and Pablo Zabaleta provide expert analysis, with commentary coming from Steve Wilson and Martin Keown. **Please be aware, fixture could be switched to BBC Four based on Group B standings after the second round of games**

Britain’s Best Junior Doctors BBC2, 19.30

BBC Two brings viewers the first medical themed quiz show. Two teams of junior doctors from teaching hospitals around Britain go head to head as they tackle an array of rigorous questions ranging from diagnosing a patient’s symptoms, prioritising cases in a mock A+E department, and getting stuck in with their chosen specialism. The teams are competing for the highest score of the week, in a bid to win a place in Friday’s final. With Jo Brand taking charge of hosting duties and our in house medical expert Dr Helen Lawal on hand to explain the medical jargon, University Hospitals Leicester face Kettering General Hospital in heat one.

Your home in Tenerife Buying a holiday home in Tenerife is often the culmination of hard work and dreams. A property abroad presents an opportunity to relax in a different climate, and increase leisure and family time. However, the cost of buying the property, and the

attached expenses, are considerable, so furnishings need to be organised in a costeffective manner. Fortunately, style does not need to be compromised. The most important thing is to work with the property you have, and not recreate a version of your home away from home, otherwise you won’t feel as though you are on holiday! Finding a balance between representing your personality and your new surroundings is important. This can be achieved by aiming for a 75/25 split in favour of local-

style furnishings, the remainder being your personal taste. Intersperse local fixtures with small, personal items. Furthermore, climate will play a part in the textures and materials chosen. Certain plastics are ill-suited to warm weather, and

heavy, textured materials are not suitable for hot climates. Smooth, shiny surfaces are easy to keep clean, and bedspreads and cushion covers should always be washable. Take into account how you are likely to spend your time on

holiday. You may be less inclined to spend hours in front of the TV, and want more time outside on the patio. The sofa may not get as much use as in the UK, but can double up as a bed to increase occupancy. It’s worthwhile investing in one of good quality, to avoid problems in the future. Your kitchen should have a full inventory, but you may not need all the items you have at home. You are likely to eat different food, and perhaps barbeque more, for example. In most cases, the holiday dwelling will be smaller than the origi-

nal home, so storage may be an issue. These problems can be solved with some careful planning, using beds with storage, bedside tables with drawers, and shelf units within cupboards. These can all help to maximise space. If you are away from your holiday home for long periods, consider fitting sun curtains or blinds to keep your property cool and dark, and prevent fading. So work with the style of the property and the climate, and make the most of your holiday investment. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

Where there’s grime there’s always crime

By Val Sainsbury AIR pollution is known for negatively impacting the lives of many people. It causes several health problems, such as increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, lung cancer and respiratory issues. More than that, it’s really bad for the environment. But, recently, another adverse effect of air pollution was added to the list. In a study, researchers from the London School of Economics (LSE) found that air pollution also triggered higher crime rates in London. By looking into 1.8m crimes in over two years, and comparing them with pollution data, they discovered that air-pollution levels directly affected the number of reported crimes. Fortunately, this was only applicable to petty crimes such as shoplifting, pickpocketing and robbery. More serious offences, such as rape and murder, were not found to be related to the pollution. In addition, researchers noted that if the rate of lessserious crimes dropped, the police had more free time and resources to go after criminals who committed heinous of-

fences. According to the results, once air pollution measured a rise of 10 points, the crime rate increased by 0.9%. This meant that the crime rate in London was 8.4 times higher on days when air quality was at its worst. Furthermore, the team of researchers used a natural experiment in which they followed where the bad air travelled to. Wherever the pollution was, the crime rate automatically increased as well, regardless of whether it was within a rich or poor neighbourhood. Professor Julia Lee, a co-author of the study, revealed: “Air pollution not only corrupts people’s health, but can also contaminate their morality.” The authors also added that the study was linked to previous ones that have shown how the more polluted the air was, the more stress hormone, called cortisol, was released by the body. This only goes to show that air pollution has a significant effect on the way people think, make decisions, and ultimately see future punishments. Meanwhile, a different team of researchers from the University of Michigan also conducted a research on the same issue. Part of their conclusion indicated

that anxiety was also a negative effect of air pollution. To be able to connect pollution to crime, the authors prepared a series of experiments where photos of both polluted and clear skies were shown to the participants. It appeared that those who looked at the polluted images showed more signs of anxiety, and were more likely to cheat on subsequent tasks. “When individuals experience a polluted environment, their overall concern for moral appropriateness may diminish, which may make them more prone to unethical and unlawful acts,” one of the authors shared. The researchers admitted that further study is needed to find more concrete links between

air pollution and crime. However, they did not forget to put an emphasis on the fact that air pollution is something that can be controlled. Therefore, ensuring that the air is of good quality equals a lower

crime rate. Here are some simple ways to help stop air pollution: * Reduce the air pollution of your car * Save energy * Use eco-friendly products

*

Don’t smoke (too much) * Plant trees * Recycle your rubbish * Choose sustainable products * Support local groups advocating for cleaner air

FACT

FACT’s 4th fundraiser

CANCER charity FACT is holding a fundraising event tomorrow, (Saturday), in Yates Showbar and Restaurant, cc Starco, Las Americas, from midday onwards.

There will be a raffle, tombola and an auction, as well as a fantastic line-up of entertainers, all giving their services free. This year, there will be a very special event, a “FACT Surprise”, on which some of the team have worked so hard. Please go along and give them a massive cheer at 2pm. A group of friends had a dream of helping people with cancer, on our lovely island, and FACT (Fighting Against Cancer Tenerife) was formed. And, four years ago this week, they held their first fundraiser. When anyone is given this awful diagnosis it involves the whole family, and is an extremely difficult time

for them all. The charity wanted to help those people, and that first fundraiser changed the group’s lives forever, enabling them to start doing just that … helping others. Some of the team have been affected by cáncer, personally, but all of them have had their lives touched, one way or another, by this horrible disease. During these four years the group have become a registered association, here in Tenerife. They are so proud to have achieved this, but it would not have been possible without the immense support of everyone who has helped them along the way. FACT came up with the idea, and the residents here made it a reality, by supporting them from day one, and continue to do so. The association and supporters will party again tomorrow, so please go along and join them.

SUGAR and Spice are small, female dogs who were discovered wandering the streets of Garachico. At the time they were found, no one was available to help, so the lady brought them to her house, here in the south. Unfortunately, she was not able to keep them, so she brought them in to the K9 refuge. They were both a bit nervous at first, but it only took them a day to realise they were safe, and were going to be well taken care of. Spice is a year old, and Sugar is 18 months. They are both very happy little dogs, but it is clear they are used to life on streets, and not to walking on leads! Nevertheless, they love to jump around and play with each other. Sugar, unfortunately, has a very old fracture on her back leg, which has left the muscle too short for her to use. As a result, it is constantly in her way when she tries to walk and go to the toilet. We made the decision to amputate this leg, which

we believe will make her life much more comfortable. She had this surgery yesterday (21st June). Both Sugar and Spice had a minor flea allergy when they arrived, so have been on medication to cure this before adoption. If you think either of these beautiful dogs would make a great companion for you, please come to meet them, or contact us for more information. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-and-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www. k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm? Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker, K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats. Also, to see daily photos of

the walks that take place at K9, like the facebook page Voluntarios del Refugio K9. Ways you can help If you wish to support K9 animal refuge, and contribute towards the safe rescue and adoption of abandoned dogs and cats, we would be very appreciative. You can buy our merchandise (T-shirts, vests, key rings, wristbands and more) at K9, sponsor one of our dogs via our website, and donate money via our website, or cash at our refuge. We also welcome donations of food and other items.

Cats Welfare News

A very relieved mum! ON Tuesday, a Cats Welfare volunteer went to Los Gigantes after a visitor alerted us to a pregnant female about to give birth. The cat was very obliging, and went straight into the box. She is now in a safe place where she will stay until her kittens are weaned and homed. She will then be spayed, and, hopefully, rehomed herself. We'll be trying to catch, and then neuter, several other cats in the near future. Adoptions These two females (abive right) are

waiting to be adopted into loving homes, either together, or separately. Tiger Lily is a lovely, small tabby, and is about four years old. She loves a cuddle and is great with dogs and other cats, and tolerates children. Garfield is a cheeky ginger. She is about six

years old, and is a real chatter box. She loves her food, and yours - if you let her! She's also happy with dogs, other cats and children. Both ladies have been neutered, are leukaemia negative, and have had their vaccinations. Interested in adopting Tiger Lily, Garfield, or

It’s worth its salt for tip-top health MANY people think that salt is just sodium chloride, and it’s all the same. They use it to add flavour to their food, and keep their body’s sodium levels from going too low, or too high. That may be true of highlyprocessed table salt, but, as with most other foods, salt varies widely in terms of purity, quality and micronutrient content. According to many natural foods advocates, the purest and highest quality salt you can find is Himalayan crystal salt. Himalayan salt, which is often pink in colour, has its origins 200 million years ago in crystalised beds of sea salt. When the Himalayan mountain range formed, these former seabeds were covered with glaciers that later protected the salt from pollution. Himalayan salt has been called the purest on earth. This unique purity is part

of what causes many people to prefer Himalayan salt, even to sea salt. Since it originated in the oceans, it contains many of the same micronutrients as sea salt. But because it has been insulated from the ongoing pollution of the oceans, and is less processed than salt extracted from the ocean, it is less contaminated, and may contain higher levels of trace nutrients. In fact, some sources claim that Himalayan salt contains all 84 trace nutrients required by the human body. Believers in energetic healing say

that the unique crystaline structure of the salt stores vibrational energy, which can then be transferred to human cells and promote health. Certainly, Himalayan salt is a far better choice than normal table salt, which has been treated with chemicals, including bleach, that strip away all the minerals except for sodium chloride. It then typically has synthetic iodine and anti-caking agents added to it, both of which make it harder for the body to absorb its nutrients. Some natural-health

advocates believe that the negative health effects widely attributed to salt may actually stem from the highly-processed salt that most people consume. The correlations seen in those studies are also probably skewed by the fact that so much salt is found in processed food, and therefore the people with the highest salt intake tend to be those who eat the most processed foods, and the least whole foods, fruits and vegetables. Advocates of Himalayan salt say that it has been shown to have a wide range of health benefits, including promoting vascular and respiratory health, lowering blood pressure, improving circulation, stabilising the pH of cells, improving hydration, preventing muscle cramps, strengthening bones, promoting healthy sleep, slowing the effects of aging and even boosting libido. Consumption of Himalayan salt may also help remove heavy metals from the body. Himalayan salt can be used to replace normal salt

in any recipe, and can be ground as finely as needed. If purchased in large slabs, it can also provide unique cooking benefits. These thick salt slabs can be heated up and used as excellent cooking surfaces that distribute heat very evenly. They can be used to sear vegetables and meat, or even fry eggs. The slabs can also be used as flavour-enhancing serving platters, chilled for foods eaten cold, or even frozen for cold dishes like ice cream. Because salt is naturally antimicrobial, the slab only needs to be rinsed or scrubbed after use, not disinfected. Himalayan salt is also prized for its air-purifying effects, and can also be bought in the form of crystal rock lamps. It makes an excellent bath salt, and is said to contain more than 80 skin-nourishing minerals. Bathing in Himalayan salt is said to soothe muscle aches, and stimulate healthy circulation. It can usually be purchased at health food stores, and is also available online.

Now that’s Ace! WITH fantastic views of Puerto Colon, and the hustle and bustle of the boats in the port, the Ace Cafe is in the perfect position, sitting on the first floor, next to the Slow Boat restaurant. The views may be like others in the area, but what this little bar has, above the rest, is music, beer and the feeling of being very welcome. Rock and Blues music is pushed through the speakers, and the bar has attitude and character to suit all. And if you aren’t looking for backing tracks, and just want the raw sound of guitars and a voice, plus all your favourite Rock and Blues tunes, then make sure you are there on a Saturday afternoon, from 5pm, after you come off the beach. The secret of this bar is not just the music or the views. Werner, the owner, has a vast knowledge of, and a great passion for, his collection of Belgian beers, for which, along with chocolate, Belgium is famous. After years of experience with his original Ace Cafe Bar in Belgium, he decided to move to the sun. His mother and father had a bar when he was very young, so he grew up learning the beer trade from them. Werner explained that beer should be served very cold, and each one has a specific glass to enhance its flavour and character. From dark

beers to blonde ones, you should pop in just to experience the difference, or even go sweeter with the selection of cherry beers. These are a must on a hot day! But if you are looking for something extra special, ask for the Kwak variety, served in its special, curved glass on a wooden stand, but make sure you’re patient, because it’s poured slowly to get the

best from the beer. Werner will be showing all the World Cup matches, and we are sure there will be a special atmosphere when Belgium face England on 28th June at 7pm. So, if you are looking for a friendly bar with great views, great music and the coldest and best selection of beers in town, pop down to Puerto Colon and see Werner at his Ace Cafe.

Andy’s more than handy

ANDY continued his early-season form for Pas O Nadas ‘A’ when he hit a 180 and had a 113 check out, as he helped his team to an excellent 7-1 win when they visited newly-promoted Legends. Sandys, who also earned promotion last year, welcomed The Pub’s experienced boys, and, with Grizzly helping himself to a 180 among other things, the visitors helped themselves to a 6-2 victory. There was a onesided affair at the Palms Pool Bar, where the home team were under orders to make sure

they lost. And Loch-In ‘A’ showed no mercy, recording an 8-0 shut-out to take them to second in the league, at this early stage. Suters 20.30 Crew kept top spot with a draw against Gaffers. They won the trebles, and Joe, with a maximum, led from the front, despite some great arrows from Tomo and Steve, who checked-out on 120 and 115 respectively. Picasso’s were put to the sword by visitors Ourplace Playboys, who raised their game to take a 7-1 scoreline home with them. After recent bad news, Phoenix Bar were back to their best, putting six past newcomers Marilyns ‘A’, who played well, consistently, to gain their two points. Waterfall, who are enjoying some decent results in Division 2, picked up five, valuable points when they travelled to Naughty Nautas, who lost in the trebles but still ended with three points.

EXTRA-TIME Fairway to running Heaven Running

ENGLAND are possible opponents for a football international against Spain in the Canary Islands later this year. A spokesman for the Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) football federation said this week that England or Croatia would play Spain in the League of Nations at Las Palmas before the end of 2018. Spain last played in the Canaries in 2007, when they faced Northern Ireland in a European Championship qualifier, also at Las Palmas. LOS REALEJOS is hosting a feast of youth football with the Teide Elite Cup, from Tuesday to Saturday (26th-30th June). It’s going to be pretty hectic because it features 40 teams, and 1,200 players, from all seven Canary Islands. ARONA Tenerife Sur ladies’ volleyball team have been forced to pull out of Spain’s Superliga, through lack of money. Instead, they are spreading their resources to fund two Superliga 2 teams. Last season, the Los-Cristianos-based team enjoyed a tremendous first campaign back in the top flight, finishing third and losing in the Queen’s Cup final. The top division is national, involving away games to the mainland, which is a big expense because Arona draw meagre home crowds. CD TENERIFE are opening a second overseas football academy. Last year they started one in China, and next month they are spreading the good word in Panama. They hope to uncover a few young gems, who might progress to be promising senior players over here.

SEDATE strolls are normally the order of the day at Amarilla Golf course, but you will be excused for breaking into a trot on the evening of Saturday, 7th July. That’s when the Ocean Booking Green Run takes

place, from 7.30pm, around the course, over a 6km or 12km route. This is a first for Tenerife, but it makes good sense because the setting along the coast, from San Miguel Marina, and inland, over

the gently-rolling hills, would put a spring in anyone’s step. Registration is now open: 15 euros for the 6km run, and 21 euros for the 12km version, at www.canaryrun. com

Ladies’ Football

Liucija boosts Granadilla IT says a lot about the strength of ladies’ football in Spain, and the growing status of Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife, who have attracted a young, proven international to join their squad. The arrival of Lithuanian signing Liucija Vaitukaityte, a midfielder who, at 18, has starred on the world stage at youth and full international level, is quite a coup for the San Isidrobased team.

They were good value for last season’s fourth place in Spain’s Premier league, and most of the squad have

already signed on again, including Maria Jose Perez and Ange Koko, the latest to put pen to paper.

Youth on blue horizon By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife update

EVEN the World Cup can’t completely relieve all the football withdrawal symptoms felt by CD Tenerife fans. But the wheels are moving, albeit slowly, behind the scenes.

Sporting Director Serrano has promised at least two new strikers and a rightsided midfielder, but no new players have signed on yet. Training resumes on 11th July, and two of the club’s most promising youngsters have been told they will be joining the senior squad for the pre-season programme, with a view to booking a shirt for the start of the Segunda Division campaign. Nahuel, a 22-year-old leftback had an outstanding season with the B team. He also showed a glimpse of his potential with a full

game against Espanyol in the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup). Borja Llarena, a 19-year-old forward from the C team, had a 10-minute run-out in the penultimate game at home, and he is rated highly. The first pre-season friendly has been set for Wednesday, 18th July, at CD Marino, prior to a one-week training camp in Marbella. Tenerife’s Heliodoro Stadium, in Santa Cruz, won’t be ready for the start of the league season. The ground is being re-

World Cup

World Cup Files SAUDI ARABIA, coached by former CD Tenerife striker Pizzi, had a scare when their internal plane was involved in a birdstrike on the way to their second game. Flames were licking around an engine on their Airbus A319, not long after taking off from St Petersburg and heading south to Rostov-on-Don. Some passengers even filmed the flames and posted on social media. Thankfully, the Rossiya Airline plane was able to reach its destination, complete with squad and officials, who were shaken but not harmed. They will be hoping for a smoother trip home after being knocked out of the tournament. CROATIA had to carry on their opening group campaign a man short, after former Blackburn player, Nikola Kalinic, was packed off home after refusing to come on as sub against Nigeria. Now playing for AC Milan, Nikola said he had a recurring back injury. Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic was less than impressed as Nikola had done his warm up routine on the sidelines before delivering his bombshell. The player has performed similar U-turns in a Croatia friendly game, and in a warm-up session before training. But this time the coach had enough and sent him home, even though FIFA rules mean they can’t replace him in the squad. BRAZIL star Neymar had an Oxford couple tearing their hair out in frustration when he took to the pitch with his new bird’s-nest hair-do. Alex and Sian Pratchett have set out to draw all 682 players taking part in the World Cup, to complete their own home-made sticker album. Neymar was one of their first finished works, and they had to complete an update to show his crowning glory. Their artistic task is to raise money for a series of charities, and £2,700 had been raised by the end of the first week of games. But Neymar might not be able to show his locks much longer in Russia, because he is struggling with an ankle injury.

turfed, because it never really recovered from the Aerosmith concert, staged there a year ago. The league have given permission for Tenerife to play their opening two games away, which could mean an early derby clash with their nearest and dearest, Las Palmas, from Gran Canaria, who were relegated from La Liga last season. The season’s fixtures will be announced on 23rd July, and the hopes of CDT fans will be reborn as coach Joseba Etxeberria tries to find a winning formula.

Pedro’s solid Foundation!

RESULTS are not always everything in football, and the love of playing, plus a chance to help the less fortunate, are also goals for which to strive. That was demonstrated at Tamaimo last weekend, when 24 teams converged for the Under-12s’ Pedro Foundation Tournament.

Initially, short, eight-aside games were played in groups followed by knockout stages up to the final. It was the third staging of the popular event, driven by Pedro, the Abades-born star of Barcelona, Chelsea and Spain. Most of the teams came from Tenerife clubs, but Real Madrid emerged as winners, beating CF Balaguer of Lleida 4-0 in the final. In their semi-final, Real

had seen off CD Tenerife 3-2 in a close contest. The other side of the draw saw Balaguer beat Las Palmas 3-1 to progress to the final showdown. Large quantities of food were donated by teams, to be distributed to the local needy by Santiago del Teide Council. And a mountain of football boots was also given over to help struggling children in Africa enjoy the benefits of sporting exercise and fun.
