Why is it Tax Efficient to hold a Spanish Tax Compliant Bond?
S
etting up a Spanish tax compliant investment is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs. If you are thinking of investing but concerned about the tax implications of a bond, read on to see how it works. Tax may be payable if you were tax resident in Spain when you invested in your bond and you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The applicable tax rate will depend on your residency status and your individual circumstances at the time you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The Individual Income Tax (IIT) regime applies to all individuals who are currently tax resident in Spain and do not benefit from the Special Tax regime. A withholding tax of 19% over the gain from your bond will be operated. This will be paid to their Spanish fiscal representative who will in turn submit the proceeds directly to the Spanish tax authorities on your behalf. So, how does it work? Look at the generic example below:
Example of a Partial Surrender – no previous chargeable events Premium (initial value assumed used)
€100,000
Surrender Value
€130,000
Partial surrender amount Policyholder resident/Spanish resident before chargeable events (Initial premium/surrender value) x partial surrender amount (€100,000/€130,000) x €5,000 (€5,000 - €3,846.15) Tax at 19% on taxable income (€1,153.85 x 19%) Amount paid to policyholder Surrender value – partial surrender amount (€130,000 - €5,000)
€5,000 Yes Portion corresponding to premium and non taxable €3,846.15 Taxable income (€1,153.85) Tax due €219.23 (€5,000 - €219.23) = €4,780.77 Closing surrender value of Bond €125,000
The above example is for illustration purposes only, your personal circumstances will determine how the bond is taxed. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

Graciosa is named 8th island
It is situated to the northwest of Lanzarote, from which it is separated by a channel of sea known as El Río (The River).
It is now regarded as the smallest of the Canary Islands, at just 29sq/km, with a year-round population of 746 inhabitants. In summer, however, up to 25,000 tourists descend on this remote, idyllic island, which has no tarmac streets and just two municipalities. The “capital” of La Graciosa is the village, or hamlet, of La Caleta de Sebo, and the only other town on the island is Casas de Pedro Barba. Residents earn their living mostly from fishing and tourism, and the only way to reach the island is by helicopter, or on one of the two boats daily from Lanzarote. It was always considered to be an outpost of the Lanzarote town of Teguise, coming under the jurisdiction of that council. Now, though, it is recognised as the eighth Canarian island, with its own budget to cover tourism needs. One of the main reasons La Graciosa sought to be recognised officially as a separate island was its extraordinary-natural beauty and excellent conservation. La Graciosa, which is part of the Chinijo archipelago and is the only inhabited island there, has always been considered to be a nature reserve only, managed by the regional government’s environment department. The other seven Canarian islands are Tenerife, which is the largest, plus Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Gomera, La Palma, El Hierro and Gran Canaria. Addresses of Canarian inhabitants are split into two recognised provinces: that of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which includes Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro and La Gomera, together with the other half, comprising Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote and, now, of course, La Graciosa.

Advice to holiday-makers for a safe and happy visit THE British Consulate, based in Santa Cruz, will be distributing a safety leaflet to the Canary Islands today (Friday), in a campaign aimed at holiday-makers especially. It pinpoints four key messages, aimed at encouraging people to look after their belongings and themselves. The leaflet will be launched at today’s press conference, taking place at Arona Gran Hotel, from 10.30am, and here are its notable details: *Be aware of your surroundings: Keep your passport and other valuables safe and out of sight at all times. If your passport is lost or stolen, ask your tour operator for instructions. By calling 0034 902 102 112, you can report the theft over the phone in English, as well as collecting your police report from wherever they say.
Remember, you cannot travel using a police report only, because you will be asked for appropriate ID to board your plane home. *In an emergency: Call the emergency services on 112. It’s free of charge, they speak English and they are the equivalent of the UK’s 999! *Respect the beach warning-flags: Red flag: No bathing allowed. Yellow flag: Bathing with caution. Green Flag: Safe to swim. Orange flag: Lifeguard not on duty.
*Lost or stolen passport: This is a vital message about what to do if this scenario occurs; the number to make a police report over the phone, in addition to making people fully aware that a police report alone is not sufficient to get them on the plane. Consular Officer Penny Gomez said: “This last message goes out to try to avoid misconceptions, and, possibly, save time for holiday-makers, so they do not need to spend hours at a police station, feeling a bit
lost. “That’s because they can actually report the theft or loss over the phone, and to someone who speaks English. She added: “The explanation about the flags is also extremely important, given the high number of drownings we face on the islands, and we felt it had to be recorded.” The prevention leaflet will be distributed today (Friday) via tour operators TUI, Jet2 and Thomas Cook, at their hotels and offices, by other authorities like town halls and National Police, and by the consulate’s social-media contacts. “We hope, someday, that they may even be shared at tourist offices and the airports,” said Penny. “We’re very excited about the launch, which will feature many authorities, including the 112 director, the director of Tenerife South airport, as well as National Police, representatives from Arona and Adeje, together with our Consul, Charmaine Arbouin.”
Transgender Angela is the new Miss Universe Spain! ANGELA Ponce, winner of Miss Universe Spain, is the first transgender woman to compete in the global beauty pageant. The 27-year-old beat 22 contestants to claim the crown last Friday, in the Spanish city of Tarragona. The victory earns her a place in December’s worldwide Miss Universe contest, to be held in the Philippines. Angela, who was born in Pilar, near Seville, was crowned Miss Cadiz in 2015, after competing in the coastal city where she spent her summers. She preferred competing in the ultimate beautyqueen competition, rather than the equivalent Miss International Queen, which is held for trans women. “I appreciate that there are contests like that,” she said. “But I am Angela. I am a person; I am a woman, and, within the
range of diversity of what it is to be a woman, I am a transsexual woman. I want to be me, and I want people to respect me as such. “It is the same as if a gypsy
woman were told that she could not participate in Miss Universe because she had to do it in a contest exclusively for gypsies. “Why? I’ve never been a man. In my DNA, I was a
woman before I was born.” And, in a Twitter message, tagging Pride Month to note the timing of her win at the end of June, she wrote: “Let’s make history.”

Commitment to education! A TOTAL of over two million euros has been injected by Adeje Council into education materials and upgrades for schools throughout the borough. These improvements include the roof for the courts in Las Torres primary school, and the construction of a multi-use pavilion in Armeñime, as well as the conversion of the Tijoco cultural centre into a temporary secondary school for the next academic year. There are other improvements on the cards for Adeje schools, and Education Councillor, Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, detailed the work schedule to school principals at a recent meeting. The Councillor told them: “If there is one thing that marks Adeje out, it is our commitment to education in every sense of the word,
which means we must, and do, invest in education when needed. “Schools are our primary focus, because they are the foundation for a good future for our children. These children have the right to develop in the best possible conditions, and with equality of opportunities.” He added: “I know, at times, that the bureaucracy of other administrations can impede certain advancements, and, as a council, we have actually taken on work outside our normal responsibilities, because we see our education community as hugely important.” Also present at the meeting were CaixaBank directors, who have been our welcome partners in sponsoring extra-curricular activities for the children, as well as offering grants and programme assistance. Pilar Quiroga said their social department “works to help cover demands for books, school materials
and food. Each year, we have increased the amount donated, now up to 16,000 euros, because, for us, everything related to education is fundamental for the development of the person. “It is marvellous to be able to help. We want to give back to society that which we have received, and, without the involvement of Adeje Council, this wouldn’t have been possible.” During the meeting, Alonso Ferrera told the principals about the need to adapt Tijoco cultural centre into a provisional secondary school, “because the current two secondary schools are already full to the point of collapse”. He added: “The cultural centre in Tijoco will be given over to the Department of Education, which will convert rooms to four classrooms, for children who have just finished 6th class in primary school in Tijoco Bajo. “Some parents have voiced
Garage-theft couple nabbed by Guardia GUARDIA Civil officers have detained a couple who held up a petrol station with a lethal weapon, after driving there in a car, stolen by the woman that morning in La Laguna. A 41-year-old man and a woman, aged 31, from the Guimar munici-
pality, have been charged with robbery, in addition to robbery with violence. The theft and robbery happened early last month, when the accused drove into the Barranco Hondo garage. Once in the vicinity, the man got out the car and put on in a jacket, ski mask and gloves. And, as he headed for the shop, he took a knife from his jacket and proceeded
to intimidate the worker inside. He demanded the till’s takings, which amounted to 280 euros, then dashed back to the stolen car, in which his girlfriend was waiting for him. They drove off at high speed, but the Guardia Civil arrived almost immediately. And, with help from Local Police, they were able to locate the couple, who are now in custody, awaiting a court hearing.
their doubts about the proposal, which we understand. For many years, the Council has advised the secondary schools that they will soon reach full capacity. And today, the IES El Galeón has almost twice the number it was assigned.” Alonso Ferrera added: “For quite a while, the Council has set aside a plot of land to give to the regional Department of Education to build a third secondary school, which is a matter we have raised with them, time and time again. “And, of course, we also are concerned that just one secondary school in Adeje offers ‘Bachillerato’ courses. “The Council has also set aside land for the construction of a vocational college, and, it is believed, the regional Education Department will announce that work on this will begin soon.” Other annual investments made by Adeje Council in local education include
monies for transport, school materials, (350,000 euros this year), plus grants to assist students attending university etc. The Council has also donated money to the parents’ associations this year to establish the “walk to school safely” scheme, which, currently, benefits over 200 families. The series of workshops for parents have also been of interest, dealing with pertinent matters such as drug-dependency, schoolbullying, truancy and healthy eating habits, in addition to helping children study etc. Alonso Ferrera used the time with school principals to let them know about the up-coming Summer University, featuring 14 courses and 15 workshops, with a wide range of subject matter on offer. There is also a training option for the over-25s, via an agreement with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
Assault complaint queried
THE Guardia Civil have opened an investigation, following an official complaint by a woman, which was made in the early hours of last Friday.
The 27-year-old, who lives in La Palma’s Breña Baja, told police she had been sexually abused by two young men, in the Los Cancajos tourist area. Guardia officers have questioned the men to see if their story matches that
of the victim, who posted her version across social media. When police asked her about why she had gone public, she said she wanted to ensure that what had happened to her wouldn’t happen to anyone else. Guardia sources have asked for the public to respect the case, as well as the officers’ investigation. So far, though, the accused haven’t been arrested.

Ryanair pilots will halt holiday flights MEMBERS of Ryanair’s Irish Airline Pilots’ Association have voted, almost unanimously, in favour of a strike. Just 1% disagreed, and the
union says that Ryanair is not taking their demands over working and pay conditions, and how annual leave is dealt with. Some 120 union members, most of them captains, are directly employed by Ryanair and are able to
strike. The Dublin-based airline said it would contact customers affected if the strike goes ahead, and has invited the union to its offices for talks. A Ryanair spokesperson said in a statement: “Since Ireland accounts for less
than 7% of Ryanair flights, we expect that 93% of our customers will be unaffected by any strike.” Pilots are planning to down tools for 24 hours from 1am next Thursday (12th July). The budget airline also faces strike threats from cabin crew members across Europe. They are calling
for Ryanair to follow labour laws in each country where staff are employed, and to guarantee the same conditions for agency workers. Sources say the unions will be giving a longer notice than the 10-day minimum, in an attempt to give the airline a chance to restart negotiations.

Call to protect refugees SPAIN’S Podemos and Equo parties have called on the Government to protect refugees fleeing climate change, now becoming a more significant migration trigger than war. Global warming affects 64 million people currently, and could increase to 250 million in 2050, according to United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
The left-wing political groups want an official government body set up to monitor the problem. Equo spokesman Juantxo López de Uralde added that women, who were especially more vulnerable, needed special protection. “Climate change is becoming a greater cause of deplacements than conflict, which is why we can’t look the other way,” he said. “We have to face the problem and take legal measurements that acknowledge this reality.”

NEWS IN BRIEF Conman finally nabbed, It’s downhill, all the way!
A WOMAN was left terrified when her car was shunted down a set of stairs and into the grill of a closed shop. She had just returned to her vehicle, in Estepona, and was about to back out, when, suddenly, a car parked across the road reversed, at high speed, straight into the back of hers. The car was knocked across the pavement, missing a couple narrowly as they walked by, and pushed down some steps and into the shop. A passenger, carrying a dog, emerged from the car which had reversed and walked away, followed by the male driver, who appeared unsteady on his feet. There were no serious injuries, but, as this is a busy road in a shopping area, the accident could have been much worse, with potential casualties.
A great white shark blunder
THE first “Great White Shark” sighting in 30 years in Spanish waters is now swamped in a sea of controversy. All the experts consulted agree that the specimen discovered last week, off the coast of Cabrera, Mallorca, is actually a shortfin mako shark. Experts also doubted that the animal sighted by conservation group Alnitak really was five metres long, as suggested. Scientists are thought to have made their findings public too quickly, without first sharing all their footage with other experts. Images of the shark spread rapidly within the scientific community, since Alnitak published its findings on Facebook last Thursday. But Gonzalo Mucientes, a shark expert and biologist, said: “At first sight, after seeing the images, I already had serious doubts that I was seeing a white shark.”
Man, 52, stabbed in neck
A 52-YEAR-OLD man suffered serious injuries after being stabbed in the neck, just after 9pm on Sunday. The emergency services received a call requesting an ambulance to attend Calle España in the El Rosario borough, in the north of Tenerife. He was transferred to Candelaria Hospital immediately for further treatment, because of his severe wounds, and police are still investigating the incident.
after two years in hiding
THE UK’s most wanted conman, Mark Acklom, has been arrested in a dramatic raid in Switzerland, after evading capture for two years. He was nabbed in the lakeside town of Wadenswil, near Zurich, in the apartment he was sharing with his Spanish wife and two children. The 35-year-old is wanted, allegedly, for defrauding a British woman of £850,000, after posing as an MI6 agent and promising to marry her. Detectives thought he
might have still been hiding out in Spain, where he had many links, including a Marbella resident he had conned. An investigation by Spanish online newspaper Olive Press revealed that he also had several ties to the Murcia region. Then, following a tip-off that he was still involved with his Spanish wife, Maria Yolanda Ros Rodriguez, the paper linked her last year with a new estate agency in the centre of Murcia. Ross Luxury Estate Agents, registered as Yolanda Ros, was set up in April 2017, after she had adopted her husband’s trick of
mixing up her name. Witnesses said they were staying at a rented property in the La Manga area last September, before vanishing. Reports say he tried to jump off the balcony as police stormed in, and he had changed his look, again, opting for a beard and long hair. The European Arrest Warrant does not apply in non-EU Switzerland, so Acklom will be dealt with under an existing extradition treaty. He was expected in court this week, from where he will have been able to oppose a return to the UK.
Violent teenagers, who hammered taxi driver FOUR teenagers have been charged with violent robbery after attacking a taxi driver in Las Palmas, capital of Gran Canaria. The driver, who picked up the four men, two aged 18, one 15 and the other 14, was asked to take them to San Francisco village. But before reaching their
destination, they attacked the cabbie, punching him and squeezing his neck tightly, before stealing his daily takings. The incident happened on 31st May during the night shift, and the taxi driver complained, officially, to the National Police. He told them the youngsters were giving him directions for what they said was a quicker route. Suddenly, he had entered a one-way
street, where the attack took place. He was taken to hospital for treatment to a wound, inflicted during the assault. National Police officers were able to identify the youths from investigations, and all four were charged with staging a robbery with violence. Both minors have appeared at a juvenile court, while the other two are awaiting a visit to the Courts.

Key to preventing drug use Late-night naughties are proving so costly THIEVES in the holiday resort of Magaluf have been making off with the clothes and belongings of British tourists, while they enjoy moonlit flings on the beach.
ADEJE Council staged a series of courses last month to spell out the dangers of using drugs, as well as substance-abuse habits, in sporting and leisure zones. The courses were geared for those who work and participate, directly, in the borough’s sporting events, and were designed, specifically, to promote
positive, healthy models as reference points. During the three-day event, those involved looked at working on preventing these needless habits in all health-related programmes. Sensible measures, designed to help the population in general, were also examined. Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo stressed: “Education and training is so important for our trainers and coaches. “They can become agents for prevention among
our young people because they know, first-hand, the people involved in sports, and how to help them directly.” Workshop discussions were held concerning alcohol and tobacco abuse, as well as preventing the use of drugs in everyday life. Those taking part studied various suggestions, which included making sure that youngsters were aware of the effects and awful consequences of drug and substance abuse.
Cash machines may be dispensable, in the end SPANISH banks began charging for the use of cash machines not so long ago, and it is possible that British banks will soon follow them. With effect from Sunday, the fees paid by banks to the cash-machine operators is dropping from 25p to 24p. And it will eventually bottom out at 20p, so there are three options open to the operators. The first, and possibly most likely, is to remove the machines from areas
where there is limited usage only. According to a Which report, around 300 machines are already being withdrawn from service every month. This figure is disputed by Link, the representative company for the shared network of these machines across the UK. Yet Link does accept that there may be some closures, especially in those rural areas where banks have also disappeared. The second option is

to charge a fee for cash withdrawals, which already happens with some machines installed in small shops. But this trend could well be extended. The third, and least likely, option, is for the suppliers to simply cover the loss of income themselves. The next time you are in the UK, be warned that there may be fewer machines in operation … and the use of them could be more expensive!
Holiday-makers in the area, so popular with British travellers, have returned to where they left their possessions after swimming nude, or indulging in love-making, to find they have vanished. These incidents occur, despite tourists being fined recently by police for rowdy behaviour in Magaluf and in neighbouring Palma Nova. They have stepped up night patrols on beaches, making a number of arrests. The crackdown follows a pledge by local politicians to clean up the area’s poor reputation. Magaluf is renowned for rowdy behaviour by holiday revellers, and eight people have been arrested recently for having sex in public, with fines of around 226 euros dished out by authorities. A total of 411 violations of bylaws, passed in a bid to control rowdy behaviour, were recorded by authorities in May, which increased from 66 at this time last year. The majority of fines, 267, were dished out for illegal street-selling, and there were 34 recorded for “unauthorised massages”, 31 for drinking in the streets and 28 for drug offences.
Young Brit survives World Cup disaster A BRITISH teenager survived after plunging from a Magaluf hotel’s fifth floor, while celebrating England’s World Cup win over Colombia. The 18-year-old was taken to hospital after falling from the Flamboyan Caribe hotel, where he had been partying with his girlfriend and friends. A kebab-shop worker called an ambulance after finding him lying outside the hotel. And, according to reports, he was in a “serious but conscious” condition when taken to Mallorca’s Son Espases Hospital. The England fan is believed to have tumbled over at around 1.30am, just hours after England beat Colombia on penalties, to earn their place in the quarter-finals. Thousands of British holiday-makers poured into bars at the Punta Ballena strip, near the hotel, to watch the game. The Guardia Civil have launched an investigation in a bid to rule out foul play, perhaps because two British people have already died in Magaluf falls this year.

Beach clean-up spells out big environmental lesson A COMMUNITY clean-up of Callao Salvaje’s Ajabo Beach, in preparation for the summer, took place last Friday. It was organised by Adeje Council and local volunteers, including the Paradise Divers’ team, and its regular customers, as well as the SpaHome Tenerife team. The Council also supplied gloves, bags, a large skip/ container and water for those taking part. The beach is extremely popular among residents and visitors, and Amada Trujillo Bencomo, Councillor for the zone, congratulated the local community for their initiative. “We are all here with our children and grandchildren to take part in a collective effort,” she said. “I would also like to thank the Paradise Divers, who have removed rubbish, including a carpet, from the sea bed.”
Pensioner struck by car A MAN in his seventies suffered serious head injuries on Tuesday at around 10am, after being run over by a car in Calle Valencia, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas. The emergency team arrived at the scene swiftly, and the pensioner was taken to hospital immediately because of the swelling to his head. He was admitted to the Doctor Negrín Hospital, and, meanwhile, Local Police are investigating the incident.
She added: “It is important for us all to understand that care of the environment is something for which we all have to take responsibility, and the best place to start is where we live.” The Council also provided a team of operators to clear large stones, and smooth out the beach zone, which is extremely popular among residents and visitors. Among the rubbish removed from the beach and the sea were plastic, cables, iron bars, computer parts, nails and screws, as well as cigarette ends … and that carpet! These materials are not biodegradable, and, therefore, a source of contamination. Councillor Trujillo Bencomo also revealed: “We found more than 100 big rusty nails, which pose a health risk to people, and we would call on everyone to remember, please, that the beach isn’t a rubbish dump. It’s somewhere we all want to be able to use and enjoy.” Dan Scarlata, who owns the dive center, said: “In the past few months we have noticed an increase of rubbish, on the
surface and underwater. “So, the aim of the cleanup was not only to remove the rubbish, but to raise awareness of how important it is to keep our beaches
and the ocean clean.” He added: “One of the most important materials removed were plastic bags, and, as everyone knows, we have
beautiful, green sea turtles living around our island. “But, unfortunately, they can mistake plastic bags for jelly fish, which they love to eat.”

Hero bull-runner Summer University’s now is gored to death much bigger and brighter ADEJE’S Education and Sport Councillor Adolfo Alonso, alongside University of La Laguna vicerector Francisco García and a number of course leaders, have outlined details of this month’s Adeje Summer University.
RUBEN Quintanar, an experienced bullrunner from Torrent (Valencia), died on Monday after being gored at nearby Paiporta. Quintanar was killed by the first bull let loose when the annual fiestas started, after going to the aid of a companion who had slipped and fallen. Instead, he slipped as well and fell backwards, on to the bull, which tossed and gored him as he lay on the ground. The horn penetrated Quintanar’s right side, damaging a lung and his heart, said Marco Antonio Navarro, President of Paiporta’s Peña El Bou Cerril association, which organised the bull-running. Navarro and other peña members acted rapidly, rushing Quintanar to a waiting ambulance, while others distracted the bull. The bull-runner was taken to the nearest hospital, La Fe in Valencia City, but it was too late and he died, soon after being admitted.
It is being held at the Cultural Centre, between 23rd-27July, and is celebrating its 26th consecutive year. Adeje, now the university campus in South Tenerife, is also running a full tourismdegree course. Francisco García said the programme had changed three years ago to become more flexible and modular, adapting to the changing profile of summer students. Many of them are not simply looking for extra credits, but are, for instance, professionals, interested in on-going training and education. The latter group, he added, were growing in number by the year. The full list of courses and workshops, all of which are in Spanish this year, are
available online www.adeje. es/uva, and you can also register online. The programme offers 14 courses, run over three days, and 15 one-day workshops with a range of parallel, complementary activities, book presentations, and a different musical event in the Calle Grande every night, in addition to much more of interest to the public in general. During the week, various
radio stations will be presenting programmes live from the summer campus. Courses include sign language, communication strategies, globalisation and online business, sports journalism and climate change, as well as subaquatic medicine. The presentation was held in the CajaCanarias Fundación HQ, given their role as one of the main sponsors of the annual summer school.

Taxi donkeys deserve a much healthier deal
Traffic pollution is a major killer POLLUTION has killed 93,000 people in Spain, prematurely, over the last decade, according to new figures. In the first Spanish study of its kind, researchers from Madrid’s National Health School have suggested that traffic restrictions be imposed, in a bid to cut down air pollution. Cristina Linares, biologist and researcher, said: “There has been a trend toward diesel in Spanish vehicles… and diesel motors are the largest source of nitrogen dioxide.” Her summing up came as a recent study by Environment International
revealed that nitrogen dioxide was the cause of 6,085 deaths, annually. The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that the common chemical, which poses serious health risks, is released every day by engines and heating machines. Yet preventable deaths caused by pollution are much higher than those caused by car accidents. Julio Díaz, head of the Epidemiology Department at the National Health School, said: “Around 3% of Spain’s annual mortality is caused by this atmospheric pollution. “And this mortality rate is eight times greater than the mortality caused by car accidents each year.”
CALLS to ban donkey taxis in Mijas, a town in the Province of Malaga, hit the headlines after the PACMA political group claimed the animals were tied to ropes, barely 20cm long, which restricted their movement when resting. The group also said that the way the donkeys were being treated was impacting their health, causing hoof and spine damage. “They work 365 days a year and are never allowed to lie down to rest,” said the party, in a statement. “During the night, they sleep tied in small blocks of up to eight animals, in 14sq/m, while having no room to move or lie down. “During work hours, they are tied, sometimes for hours, to metal structures,
while waiting for potential customers. They have no freedom of movement and cannot meet their own physical needs.” PACMA, which claimed the treatment of the donkeys violated regional and national animal welfare rules, has called on Mijas Council to enforce the law “rigorously”, and to ban the use of donkeys for taxis in the town. The group added that attempts to meet with Mijas authorities have proved fruitless, despite their protests. Angel Nozal, former mayor and leader of the conservative Partido Popular in Mijas, put forward his animalcare proposals last year. He wants to see the creation of a shelter for
abandoned animals in the El Barrio quarry, as well as purpose-built stables for donkeys pulling taxis in Mijas Pueblo. “The current stables, located in an urban setting where people live, do not meet the sanitary conditions necessary for the animals to be there,” said Nozal. He added that a 2014 report exposed a problem with the current arrangements, which will form a major section of the party’s local manifesto for the next election. “The refuge would also allow the donkeys to live out their lives there, when they too old to continue to serve as taxis,” he said. “In addition, it could become a tourist attraction in its own right because visitors could enjoy seeing the animals for themselves.” It is not the first time the donkey-taxi business has sparked outrage. A 2015 video of a handler, beating an animal which refused to move, left animal-lovers up in arms and led to the installation of railings, offering them greater freedom of movement.

A VETERAN doctor, now 85, will be the first person to stand trial in Spain’s decades-old “stolen babies” scandal. Gynaecologist Dr Eduardo Vela will appear in a Madrid court over his alleged involvement in a criminal network, believed to have seen hundreds of thousands of babies taken from their mothers and sold, under the regime of dictator Francisco Franco. The practice, which began after the Spanish Civil War ended in 1939, continued until after the leader’s 1975 death. Children were stolen from families considered to be Republican, because they supported the government overthrown by Franco’s Nationalists after a military rebellion, and handed to others supporting the fascists. Single or working-class mothers, or women with “degenerate” political views, were the typical victims. The trafficking remained largely out of the public eye until two men, Antonio Barroso and Juan Luis Moreno, revealed in 2011 how a Zaragoza priest sold them to their respective fathers. They formed an association to help victims, whom, they believe, number up to 300,000.

Old-time doctor set for tough grilling in ‘stolen babies’ trial
Vela, who worked at the Spanish capital’s San Ramon clinic, is accused of separating Ines Madrigal, 49, from her birth mother in 1969.
She was given to a 46-yearold woman, along with a forged birth certificate, and the doctor faces an 11-year jail term for illegal detention, falsifying official
documents and certifying a non-existent birth. Madrigal’s adopted parent told her the truth when she turned 18, and the railway employee has since become
president of Murcia’s Stolen Babies Association (SOS). She does not expect the trial to serve up the answers for which she has spent three decades searching. But she hopes it will trigger the reopening of thousands of closed cases. “Obviously, I don’t think that Eduardo Vela is going to tell me the truth,” said Madrigal. “He’s not going to tell me who my mother is, or about the circumstances in which I was taken from her. “I’m not so naive as to believe that’s going to happen, but I’d love it if we could get the records of all the women who gave birth at the San Ramon clinic.” She added: “This is a really important issue because, for 60 years, we were the baby supermarket for Europe and South America… not just Spain.” In 2013, Maria Gomez Valbuena, an 87-year-old nun who worked with Vela at the clinic, died, just before she was about to stand trial.
Taxing time for Ronaldo, and a World Cup horror
REAL Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has made a multi-million-euro offer to the Spanish Solicitor General’s office in bid to settle a court case against him for alleged tax fraud. According to sources, the Portuguese player has offered to accept a twoyear jail term, which would be suspended, and to pay an 18.8m-euro fine. The case involves alleged irregularities relating to Ronaldo’s image rights, between the years 2011 and 2014, during which time he is thought to have evaded 14.7m euros in taxes. The news broke just hours before skipper Ronaldo starred with a hat-trick in the 3-3 draw against Spain, in their opening World Cup match in Russia.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo is still licking his wounds after Portugal’s shock, last-16 defeat by Uruguay, in the initial knockout stage. As far as it is known, the Spanish Tax Agency is yet to accept his latest proposal, and there are ongoing discussions about how big a sum he should be fined. The Tax Agency is demanding 30m euros
because The Madrid prosecutor running the case has accused Ronaldo of taking advantage of a corporate structure, created in 2010. In March this year, a previous offer from the player was rejected by the Spanish tax authorities. Sources close to the investigation described a meeting with Ronaldo several months ago as
“very unsatisfactory”. No wonder, because he was said to have offered an “insignificant amount” of around “four or five” million euros. The Tax Agency rejected the offer, and, instead, opted to press on with its criminal proceedings against the former Manchester United icon. The Madrid prosecutor in charge of the case has accused Ronaldo of taking advantage of a corporate structure created in 2010, the year after he was signed by Real Madrid from United, to conceal income generated in Spain from image rights. That was, the prosecutor argued, a “voluntary” and “conscious” failure to meet his tax obligations in Spain. Ronaldo is accused of four tax offences, one for each of the tax years in which he is allegedly to have committed fraud.
The company which handled Ronaldo’s image rights is called Tollin Associates LTD, based in the British Virgin Islands, which are a tax haven. That company granted the exploitation of the rights to another firm, Multisports & Image Management Ltd, which is based in Ireland. And it was this latter business, the prosecutor says, which managed and exploited the rights without the Virgin Islands’ company being involved. Last summer, Ronaldo, who appeared before a judge in Pozuelo, the town outside Madrid where he lives, denied having hidden income from his image rights. According to the prosecutor, though, these are valued at 59.9m euros, and are liable to taxes of 14.7m. But that will hardly make a dent in the superstar’s fortune.

Spanish will soon lead English language tests SPANISH is set to become the most studied language by English school pupils, as exam entries continue to rise, while those for others are falling. A British Council study found that the selection of Spanish GCSE and A-Level qualifications by students had grown to some 7,600 entries since 1997. And if current rates continue, it is expected to become the leading foreign language in school classrooms, according to the data. More pupils will take Spanish as a GCSE by 2025 than other languages on offer, and it should lead the way in A-Levels by 2020. The number of students opting to take A-Level French has fallen to 8,300, from 21,300 in 1997, while those sitting German exams now stands at around 3,300. Vicky Gough, a British Council adviser, said a per-
A MARBELLA man, aged 77, has been arrested for animal abuse after poisoning half-a-dozen chickens, allegedly. He is accused of using rat poison to kill the birds, which, reportedly, kept interrupting his sleep. According to court documents, the disgruntled neighbour threw corn, lentils and rice, laced with the poison, into the pen next to his San Pedro de Alcantara home. He was arrested on 20th June, following a complaint from the chickens’ owner, and has been released, pending a court appearance. ception of Spanish being easier than others, and the country’s popularity as a holiday spot, could be behind the trend. “That’s because young people can imagine having a chance to use it,” she added. Spanish has bucked a trend
of overall decline in the acceptance of foreign languages in English schools. Those in the field are concerned that Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union (EU) could well be speeding up a decades-long trend.
Around 34% of state secondary schools felt there was a negative impact on the students’ desire to study languages, following the Brexit vote. The choice of A-Level French is down by more than 30%, while that of German is down by 37%.
Shamed ‘Wolf Pack’ cop bids to get new passport
A MEMBER of the now-notorious “Wolf Pack” gang has attempted to get a new passport, just days after being forced to hand over his travel documents as a condition of being released from prison.
Angry neighbour poisons chickens
Antonio Guerrero (pictured), the Guardia Civil officer among the five men convicted, tried to get the new travel documents last Monday, it has been revealed. The Sevilla gang were cleared of rape after a trial which attracted widespread condemnation from women’s groups. The result, which stoked an intense national debate, also triggered a spate of protests.
All five were freed on bail, on condition that they handed in their passports, after almost two years in jail. And that prompted even more protests across the country, and from the cops! The National Police even put an angry message on Twitter, above an image of cartoon law-enforcer Batman, shaking his head and wagging his finger, saying: “A member of #The
Wolf Pack caught trying to get a passport… while a ban on leaving Spanish soil has been imposed by a court.” Judges in Navarra actually defended their release of the group, saying the risk of them trying to flee would be limited by several conditions, including reporting to police three times a week and relinquishing their passports.
Stroke of luck for two swimmers in distress
TWO young men, who decided to take a swim in El Hierro, off Las Puntas’ Gulf Valley coast, in the La Frontera borough, should count their blessings because they are lucky to be alive. A call was made to the authorities last Sunday, just before 5pm, reporting that two swimmers in Las Puntas, who were struggling to return to shore, needed immediate assistance. Sources say the younger man, 25, was struggling at first, and couldn’t fight the current. His 27-year-old companion jumped into the sea to try to help him, but he, too, was battered by the elements. A rescue team, including the emergency helicopter, and maritime boat, as well as the General Emergency Services (GES), were all dispatched to the area. But, by that time, the pair were in serious trouble because of the location and the rough sea Unfortunately, the island’s GES helicopter has no winch, which is why the maritime rescue boat was dispatched, and, fortunately, rescued the men. They were hauled out of the water and taken ashore, where an ambulance team attended to them. Although both men had endured a traumatic experience, they suffered mild injuries only and were transferred to the Nuestra Señora de los Reyes hospital, in island capital Valverde. There, they were kept under observation, and, later, given the all-clear.

High-speed calamity Spanish must halt its sale of arms to Israel NO fewer than four NGOs have demanded that Pedro Sanchez’s new government should prevent the sales of light weapons and ammunition, to middleeast countries Saudi Arabia and Israel.
Amnesty International, Greenpeace, FundiPau and Oxfam International made the call as part of the Control Arms campaign. The awareness drive seeks to highlight the risks to human rights from
exporting arms to these countries. Oxfam said it was attempting to make sure the 2007 Arms Trade Law, passed in Spain, was being applied properly, so there could be control and transparency over sales. Chema Vera, Oxfam International’s director, said the ending of sales to Saudi Arabia was justified, because of its intervention in the Yemen Civil War. Saudi Arabia is Spain’s largest arms client outside the EU and NATO, with annual sales worth around 270.2 million euros. Santiago Beltran, of
Amnesty International, said the export of weapons to Israel should be suspended, because of alleged humanrights violations. These include the deaths of more than 100 Palestinians in Israeli military shootings since March. Spain sold arms worth 1.4m euros to the country last year, and was denied licences to export even more, adding up to 1.9m euros. The NGOs have called for greater parliamentary oversight about arms trading in Spain, and to stop further exports where they posed a threat to human rights.
Thief leads police a merry old dance
A YOUNG man, seen climbing down window shutters after staging a burglary in an apartment block, inflicted several injuries on an officer, and damaged a police car. The drama unfolded at around 1.40am last Sunday in San Isidro’s Edificio Azalea, in Calle La Dama. A neighbour, who heard a noise outside, spotted the man and called the police, who happened to be surveying the area in a patrol car. They saw the burglar jump down and gave chase immediately. He was quick, but the cops persisted and finally caught up with him. One officer was dragged
to the floor as he attempted to stop the miscreant, suffering injuries to his knees, hands and an arm. But as the man continued to resist the arrest, more officers waded in to help their colleagues. Once detained, the suspect was handcuffed, with his hands behind his back, and placed in the patrol car’s rear seat. Somehow, though, he was able to smash the back window with his feet, after manoeuvring his arms to the front of him. He was found carrying jewellery, a mobile phone and an Xbox, along with a PSP and all the remote controls. The thief is now awaiting a court hearing.
A TOTAL of 23.7bn euros has not been “spent wisely” on Spain’s high-speed rail network, according to the European Court Auditors. Since 2000, the EU has been funding various high-speed railways across the bloc. But a recent report by the European Court Auditors found that ‘effectiveness of the investments is lacking and EU added value is at risk’. The report adds that ‘low passenger numbers are leading to high risk of ineffective spending of 2.7bneuro EU co-funding’. Potential routes under consideration were connecting Lisbon and Madrid by the Extremadura line, but the plans were later scrapped as well as other sites. According to Luc T’jeon, who oversaw the report, the issues are being ‘based on political con-
siderations.’ He added: “The money is there; it’s on the tracks. “However, tracks are either being constructed with big delays, or they have had huge cost overruns. Or, when they were completed, they were late to be put in use.” Vast swathes may have been wasted on ‘high-speed lines that were not needed everywhere they have been built’ according to T’jeon, who also added ‘trains were only running at 45% of the speed that lines had the capacity for.’ He concluded: “The EU is aware of the situation, but they had no legal tools to push member states to do something about it.” The countries with the highest investment included France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Portugal and Austria.

THE pound has recorded steady losses against the euro and US dollar over the last fortnight, beacuse of growing concerns that Brexit talks are not progressing smoothly.
Criticism from EU leaders has been a major factor behind this decline, as traders consider the chances of the UK meeting the October negotiation deadline. GBP/EUR has ticked from 1.14 to 1.13, while EUR/GBP has risen from 0.87 to 0.88. Meanwhile, the GBP/USD exchange rate has dropped from 1.32 to 1.31, and EUR/ USD has risen from 1.15 to 1.16. Although the odds of the Bank of England (BoE) increasing interest rates

Brexit worries keep pound under pressure in August have risen, the pound has been struggling to exert itself over the last few weeks, because of ongoing concerns about the progress of Brexit negotiations. The latest blow to GBP was dealt at an EU summit, where EU leaders criticised the UK’s lack of progress in talks, particularly concerning the fate of the Irish border. Euro traders, meanwhile, kept an eye on the European Central Bank (ECB) conference in Sintra, where ECB officials cautiously stressed that future interest-rate hikes would not be sudden decisions. US news was mainly focused on trading conflicts; signs that companies like HarleyDavidson could move out of the country to cope with tariffs rattled USD, but general demand for safehaven currencies prevented the currency sustaining significant losses. In the near-term, the pound-to-euro exchange
rate could be influenced by June’s UK services-sector PMI. As the services sector accounts for over 70% of total economic output, a positive result could give the pound a lift. Beyond this, sterling could turn volatile on 10th July when UK GDP, manufacturing and industrial output stats come out. If the data supports the case that the UK is having a stronger second quarter, we could see sentiment towards the pound improve. Over the next fortnight, influential Eurozone data
will include retail-sales stats and industrial-output figures. Economists have forecast a slight decline in consumer spending. For US dollar traders, the next economic data to watch out for will include Federal Reserve minutes out yesterday (Thursday), jobs-market stats today (Friday), and inflation rate figures next Thursday, 12th July. All of these releases could keep the US dollar bullish, if it looks like another Fed interestrate hike is likely, in the coming months. At

That is what you A 3% pay rise for all workers call stinking rich!
THE number of millionaires in Spain has more than doubled since the start of the economic crisis. And it’s all down to the recession, which began in 2008. Since then, the most financially-privileged sector of society has prospered, with the country’s rich list swelling by 76%. Consultancy company Capgemini says the figures had shot up, from 127,100 to 224,200 by 2017, with the largest increase (10.8%, or 22,100 people), occurring last year alone. The figures surpass not only the European average of 7.3% growth, but the worldwide average of 10.6% as well. To be considered a millionaire, you have to possess at least one million euros of disposable income, not including your habitual residence or high-value items like artworks. Spain is now listed 14th in the world for millionaires, but with an ever-widening wealth divide. Sadly, though, in strong contrast, 14.9% of Spain’s citizens still live below the poverty line, according to the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development).
COMPANY representatives and unions have agreed that employees across Spain will be given a 3% annual pay rise until 2020, at the least, when the situation will be reviewed. A fixed 2% will be given, plus another variable sum of up to 1%, depending upon productivity, company results and whether or not the worker has been absent frequently, and without justification. This annual rise is not legally-binding, but “strongly recommended”, and it affects around 4,000 industry-specific, workingconditions agreements. Unions wanted to include a clause, making it compulsory for pay increases to rise each year in line with inflation, if this is more than 2%. But it has been left as “a possibility”. Although the rises are not obligatory, they will carry great weight when different sectors renew their collective employmentconditions agreements, which is a joint process between the companies involved and unions. In the last few months, collective agreements signed and sealed have included average annual rises of around 1.6%, to
include fixed increases and productivity (or results), plus linked increments, which means the new 3% deal will make a considerable difference. Companies and unions have already signed off the new minimum wage, which is compulsory in any job, at 14,000 euros per year for a full-time, 40-hour week, which equates to 1,000 euros a month after tax. Other steps the government plans to take in terms of labour relations includes making it obligatory for companies to treat agency and outsourced workers the same as salaried and contracted employees, to prevent cost-cutting at the expense of secure jobs, and a trend towards worsening conditions and wages across the board. The Government also wants to encourage and reward firms for avoiding
redundancies by cutting workers’ hours temporarily. Where companies are in financial difficulties, or running on a shoestring, they are urged, and could be forced, if the tendency does not catch on, to come up with “agreed flexible solutions”, based upon working hours, and not by having staff on strings of temporary contracts and a high employee turnover, and to aim to avoid redundancies as a priority. Unions want the Government to introduce legal changes that allow job contracts to terminate automatically, upon retirement, provided the employee is entitled to a 100% pension, to free up jobs for the younger generation. They are also calling for an “observatory on absenteeism” to find out the causes and tackle them, although they recognise that since the financial crisis, “presenteeism” has been just as much a problem. Addressing the gender pay gap, and adapting vocational and professional training and qualifications to suit the actual requirements of the job market, are also at the planning stages.

The Gameshow Serial Killer: Police Tapes
Picnic At Hanging Rock
Wednesday 11th July, BBC2, 21.05
In the final decade of the 19th century, beautiful and mysterious widow Hester Appleyard (Natalie Dormer) arrives in Australia, haunted by a secret past. Paying in cash for an isolated mansion out in the bush, she establishes a school for young ladies - and six years later, Appleyard College is a success. An enigmatic headmistress, something haunts Hester. Is it the bush dangerous and untamed? Or is it her own secret past? Appleyard College has three star pupils - sophisticated Irma (Samara Weaving), a Rothschild heiress, whip-smart Marion (Madeleine Madden), daughter of a High Court Justice, and rebellious tomboy Miranda (Lily Sullivan), a cattle-station princess. Their friendship ignites the magical and dangerous energy of adolescence. They resist the edicts of society. Confronted by the unwelcome advances of a young soldier headed for the Boer War, Miranda impales his foot with a pitchfork, earning her headmistress’s contempt for her lack of self-regard. Punishing devoted young orphan Sara (Inez Curro) for Miranda’s recklessness by keeping her back from the outing, the rest of the Appleyard College ladies go on a picnic on St Valentine’s Day, 1900, with their governesses to Hanging Rock.
Thursday 12th July, ITV1, 21.00 “I am not a murderer. I don’t care whether you believe it or not, I am not a murderer.” -‘Gameshow serial killer’ John Cooper in police interview “This is the person who has committed these horrendous offences. And here he was sitting in front of me. What struck me was his piercing eyes. I think he was sussing me out, sort of glances, sideward glance from him really, he was probably trying to get the measure of me then. As much as I was doing the same to him.” - Det Insp Louise Harries, specialist interviewer In this new documentary in ITV’s Crime & Punishment strand, Susanna Reid gains privileged access to police interview tapes from the investigation into one of Britain’s most prolific serial killers, John Cooper, who murdered four people in Wales. After brutally murdering the quartet in Pembrokeshire, Cooper eluded prosecution for the crimes for 20 years until a combination of a new detective team and advances in forensic science finally brought him to justice in 2011, when he was convicted for the killings. This programme tells how the cold case team who picked up the investigation discovered that four years after murdering the first couple in 1985, he had appeared on gameshow Bullseye, which was weeks before the vicious shooting of another couple taking a coastal walk on the last day of their Welsh holiday. With much of the crime scene evidence long gone, and no witnesses to help the enquiry, nearly everything hinged on whether the detectives could find the key to make him admit the truth about his murders. Susanna interviews the leading detectives in the case, some speaking for the first time, who tell her how they approached the investigation into their suspect, who was known to police but had never before talked under police questioning.

The Misadventures Of Romesh Ranganathan
Sunday 8th July, BBC2, 21.00
For years, all that most people in Britain have heard about Ethiopia is famine. And drought. And Bob Geldof singing about famine and drought. Now comedian Romesh Ranganathan is heading to East Africa to discover if this reputation is justified. Is Ethiopia really a food-starved dust bowl? Or will he find a warm welcome and place of unique natural beauty there? Met by local anthropologist, Mike Tamerat, Romesh heads on a journey across this vast country, visiting ancient rock churches, scientific oddities, Rastafarians and camels to get a unique insider’s guide. Along the way he experiences local wellness treatments that he worries will damage his reproductive capacity, an eye cleansing doctor, and traditional rhyming jazz musicians who have a lot of fun insulting him in front of an audience. But as he tries to get to grips with the country he also encounters a side to Ethiopia that makes him question its undoubted beauty and fun - an oppressive political regime that has resulted in decades of turmoil and a country that stands on the brink of change. Bob Geldof wanted to feed the world, and asked if they know it’s Christmas time. Ethiopians do know when it’s Christmas time they have one of the largest Christian populations in the world. But will he find any food? And beyond his stomach, will he find anything worth traveling there for?

The Last Leg Six-part series celebrating the comedy of Victoria Wood. Michael Ball presents the third instalment, which looks at Victoria’s refreshingly candid views on sex and relationships and her unique ability to say what we were all thinking when it came to romance, dating, getting it or not getting it. Michael guides us through a selection of classic clips including standup from the Albert Hall; Victoria’s spoof documentary, Mr Right; Italian Restaurant and Family Planning from As Seen On TV; and standout moments from her multi-award-winning sitcom dinnerladies. He is joined by Duncan Preston and Anne Reid, who reveal how some of Victoria’s most memorable comedy moments were created. Former cast mates Maxine Peake and Shobna Gulati recall filming the hilarious bedhopping antics of their characters in dinnerladies. Michael rounds off the show by introducing a song from the archives, but not just any song - this is one of Victoria’s most famous, The Ballad of Barry and Freda.

Reporting Trump’s First Year: The Fourth Estate c h o i c e BBC2, 22.00
As violence stoked by white supremacists erupts in Charlottesville, The New York Times reporters scramble to make sense of the news. Now accustomed to the relentless pace of Donald Trump’s first term in office, the President’s unwillingness to denounce the racist hate groups presents a new test for the country and its journalists. After a firestorm of criticism from the left and right, at a rally in Phoenix Trump blames the “failing New York Times” and “crooked media” for distorting his speech and further deepening the country’s divisions. Meanwhile Steve Bannon exits the White House, and a Times reporter with close access to the former chief strategist questions where his populist revolution is headed now, without the President’s ear. While the country’s tensions play out on social media, the paper deals with reining in its own reporters on Twitter. The Russia investigative team are at the ready when Mueller makes his first big move - but it’s not at all what they expected.

A funeral brings key players to the palace, with Cardinal Leto from the Vatican eager to exercise closer control over Louis’ ambitions, while Emperor Leopold still intends his niece Eleanor to marry the king of Spain. Louis seeks to cultivate Leto’s favour, unaware the man has a potential trump card in their dealings. To circumvent Leopold’s schemes the king agrees a deal with the Ottoman envoy, and requires Marchal to undertake a grave task. Sophie’s insider knowledge forces her to make a dangerous decision. In the salon, Delphine speaks out against the latest crack-down on Protestants at Versailles, increasing the Chevalier’s admiration for her. Philippe, aided by Marchal’s researches, discovers a secret that rocks the foundation of Louis’ right to rule.

Actress Olivia Colman claims to be ‘the least adventurous person I know.’ As for her ancestors, apart from a rumour that there was a Frenchwoman somewhere in her family tree, Olivia thinks they are largely from Norfolk. Olivia is astonished to discover that she needs to travel to India to find out more about her great-great-great-grandmother Harriot. Olivia finds records that reveal Harriot was an orphan in 1811 on a ship bound for England from (then) Calcutta. 999: What’s Your Emergency? e c i o h Channel 4, 21:00 c
06:20.................. Totally Bonkers Guinness World Records
999: What’s Your Emergency? focuses on the relentless work of Wiltshire’s police, paramedic and fire services. This episode explores the rising use of cannabis, which is now increasingly being smoked openly on Wiltshire’s streets as people’s attitudes to the class B drug change fast, especially among the young. When the police catch a group of teenagers smoking joints outside, one unfazed teenage girl responds: ‘I know you think it’s like illegal’ - and when officers tell her that really it’s actually still illegal-illegal, she offers in mitigation to ‘next time smoke it indoors’. Cannabis use is now so prevalent, and such a relatively low priority for overstretched police forces, that offences are often dealt with via a formal warning, which, even the police officers handing them out acknowledge, is not always an effective deterrent. And cannabis dealing is also on the rise.

Your room outside
PARTICULARLY in Tenerife, where the weather is generally very good, you should think of your outside space as an extra room in your home, one which you should be able to use for the best part of the year. While many of us may not have a garden, patios and terraces can still make wonderful and welcoming living spaces, with the added advantage of needing very little maintenance. Design ideas aren’t only for inside, so decide on a theme for your outside space. Do you want to go for a pretty area of different plants, rustic pots and gardening
tools, in a shabby-chic style, or do you want a minimalist look of modern furniture and shiny accessories? Decide on your theme, and what ambience you are trying to create. Lighting will be a big part of creating the mood, because this will enable you to use the space outside, whenever you want. If you can find solar lights, these will illuminate automatically, without any need for you to think about switching them on. Create a sense of continuity, so that the outside area is merely an extension of the inside. This is easy if you have patio doors, and better still if you invest in “glass curtains”, which are doors that concertina to the sides, to leave the doorway completely open. Garden canopies or roller blinds have the obvious use of providing shade from the full sun, which means that you can use your outside area,
literally all year round. Use a professional fitter, because, when extended, these blinds are very heavy, so a good quality mechanism and the correct fitting are vital. Never leave the blinds out permanently, because high winds or heavy rainfall will put strain on the fixings. Also, remember to check with your community what colours are allowed, because mistakes can be costly.
Bunion problems
By Val Sainsbury WHETHER it's sandal season or the time of the year to wear boots, you may be thinking you should do something about that large bump, jutting out at the base of your big toe. Doctors call it a hallux valgus, but you might know it as a bunion. They form when the bone or tissue at the joint at the bottom of the big toe moves out of place. Years of abnormal motion, and pressure on the joint, forces the big toe to bend towards the others, which causes an often-painful lump on the joint. This joint at the base of the big toe carries much of your weight while walking, so bunions can cause severe and constant pain. The joint may become so
stiff and sore that shoes may be too painful to wear. Are stilettos to blame? Bunions often run in families, but they also can be the result of the way we walk or the shoes we wear, says podiatrist Georgeanne Botek, Medical Director of Cleveland Clinic's Diabetic Foot Clinic, in the US. Women develop bunions far more often than men, Dr. Botek says, especially as they get older. People with flexible joints seem to tolerate their bunions more, but others with stiff joints or arthritis usually have more trouble, and might develop pain earlier. If you develop a bunion, talk to your family doctor. You may be may referred to a podiatrist, who is able to diagnose and treat conditions of the foot, ankle and related structures of the leg. Treatment without surgery All bunions are permanent unless surgically corrected.
But there are some measures you can take to be more comfortable, or to slow a bunion's progression, said another US podiatrist, Dina Stock. “For many people, it may simply be a matter of wearing properlyfitting shoes,” Dr. Stock said. “Be sure to choose low-heeled, comfortable shoes that provide plenty of space for your toes and the widest part of your foot."
Clusters of plants create a tropical feeling and the sense of being at one with nature. You can also use mirrors outside to create the impression of more space, light and energy. Set the mood by using floorbased lanterns and floor cushions, with some ornaments. Use colourful crockery and glasses. There are some lovely designs available in melamine or plastic that are safe for outside, but which
also give a summery impression, and it’s one area of the house where bright, vibrant colours won’t look tacky! Woven rugs can also be used to visually divide the terrace into areas, and add even more colour. If you don’t have much space, consider foldable tables and chairs that only take up a lot of room when they are in use. Use a ledge of the balcony to display plants, and tie them
on to keep them safe, if you need to. Consider “vertical planting”, fitting pots on shelves or attaching them directly to the wall, or perhaps using a whole shelving unit to display your accessories and plants. If you are lucky enough to have a pergola, consider fitting curtains to the sides, which can be draped back and only drawn across when needed. This creates the impression that your terrace really is another room, and the curtains will help to create shade, protect from any wind, and give you some privacy. Use weatherproof material, similar to that used for exterior blinds, because this will resist the rigours of sun, wind and rain, and use dressy tie-backs to give an impression of luxury. If you need help making the most of your outside space, contact Deco Nuevo on 922 789729, and they will visit you at your property for a noobligation quote.

Accion del Sol News
Beware of the heat! WITH the weather starting to warm up, please remember to take extra care with your dogs, ensuring that they are not left unsupervised in cars, even for a short time. The temperature can rise extremely quickly, causing unecessary stress, and even death. We would also advise you to walk your dogs early in the morning and/or later on in the evening, to avoid the heat of the day. Remember that the high temperature of the pavements can burn your pets' paws. Please ensure that your dog has lots of access to shade and plenty of cool water. Summer also brings
even larger amounts of abandoned dogs to our refuge, so please do come and visit us if you are interested in adopting. Fundraising event
Our next fundraising event is on Saturday,7th July, when you will have the chance to view the kennels and see our many dogs. Please do come along and show your support.
Walkies! We are always looking for dog-walkers, so, if you have a little spare time, please do come to the refuge and make a dog very happy.

K9 Animal News SUGAR was found up north in Garachico, and was brought to us at the refuge, a few days later.
She is a lovely, small-tomedium-sized animal, about 18 months old, and is very friendly with humans and other dogs. We suspect she has spent a large amount of her life on the streets, yet she is still enthusiastic about everything, and very cheerful. When she arrived, she had an old fracture of her back leg, which left her thigh muscle too short to use. It was clear that the amputation of this leg would increase her quality of life, as it was only getting in the way when she walked and went to the toilet. She has now had this done, so it's vital that she
Meet Sugar! walks as much as possible, in order to build up the muscles of the remaining back leg, and to get used to walking on three legs. The refuge is not the ideal place for her to recover. Ideally, she needs a warm and loving home where she can recover properly, and get used to her new life. If you would like to offer lovely Sugar a home, please contact us at the refuge, or come and meet her! Many thanks We would like to say a massive thank you to Aqua Club Thermal Spa, who held a fundraising campaign for us in June, raising a whopping 339 euros! Car-boot sales The K9 car-boot sales are now cancelled until September. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-and-secure, forever homes. Tenerife Loves Karaoke
37 CW
Erin is crowned the TLK Queen! THE Tenerife Loves Karaoke competition, sponsored by Roy’s Pizza and Indian Tandoori Restaurant, went out with a bang last Friday (29th June), with the final 12 contestants singing to try to win. This year’s standard was definitely on another level. They performed for the four judges, and a room packed full of cheering people. The successful 12 had won their heats to go through to the semi-finals, held earlier in the week. They took it in turns to sing, to be in with a chance of winning the overall prize of 1,000 euros in cash, an opportunity to perform at this year’s Tenerife Entertainment Awards, a week’s all-inclusive Canarian Cruise with Pulmantur, courtesy of Vantastic Tours and Festival of Legends, along with the opportunity for Keddy’s Entertainment to create his or her own portfolio and showcase, and the chance for a career in entertainment. The final three, Kim Simon, Thomas Clark and Erin O’Connor, had to sing again, and Erin, who won her heat at The Theatre Cabaret Bar, and has only been on the island for a few weeks, was crowned the winner. She works as a waitress in Leonardo’s, and the owners were there to give her a celebratory hug. A great night was had by all, and congratulations must go to all who entered the competition.

Waterfall girls’ big splash! THE season’s first competition got underway, with two venues welcoming the First Division’s doubles players. Gaffers’ Terry and Joe, playing at home, beat allcomers, and, in the final pairing, were victorious against Dan and Tomo in a brilliant night of darts. Let’s hope Terry’s smile is still as broad on Wednesday morning. At Palms Pool Bar, it was also the scene of some excellent darts, but the night belonged to Pete and Grizzly, from The Pub, as they overcame Luc and Wattie, from Pas O Nadas ‘A’, to win through to the final. As usual, Luc hit a 180 maximum, but finishing again was the key. In Division 2, Daz and Matt took advantage of their home draw at Emerald Lounge. They bat-
tled through to the final, where they will play Ken from Emerald Lounge ‘B’ and Ian from Sundowners. The biggest cheer of the night came at Pas O Nadas, where, for the first time, Kath and Georgina from Waterfall battled through to earn a clash with Palms Pool Bar’s Nora and Lynn. Thanks to all the venues for hosting the matches, as well as providing the food, and thanks, also, to the players, who took the time to enter.

Vroom for Guimar speed
Bouncing out of court TXUS Vidorretta, Iberostar Tenerife’s returning coach, has plenty of work to do, as two of his prized, overseas players have left the club.
IT’S the 45th year of the Subida Mirador de Guimar rally race, and enthusiasm is as great as ever, with 70 cars ready to roar. Today (Friday) is about checking-in competitors’ cars at the Plaza de San Pedro holding area, so judges can ensure they all comply with race specifications. The brakes are off tomorrow, and the TF-28 road will be closed to the public from
7am. There will be two speed bursts, the first at 10am, and the other as soon after noon as regrouping will allow. Once the cumulative times have been confirmed officially, and any necessary penalties deducted, the winner’s ceremony will take place at 3pm, outside the Town Hall. Last year’s champion, Luis Monzon Artiles, and codriver Jonathan Morales, will again be among the favourites in their Audi R9LM.
It means that quality replacements are top of his shopping list, even though Tai Odiase, 22, is the lesser blow, because the Nigerian American, who arrived last season from Chicago, struggled to make an impact. The bigger concern is the loss of Polish star Mateusz Ponitka, who topped the scoring regularly during an impressive season, after arriving from Turkish league Pinar. The 24-year-old, dominant player has triggered a release clause in his contract and is heading
for Moscow to play for Lokomotiv Kuban. The get-out clause means that his new team will have to pay Tenerife compensation, estimated to be between 50,000 and
100,000 euros. But his loss is still a big blow because he was a fans’ favourite. As well as his success at club level, Mateusz is a regular with the Poland national team.

Good news from on high By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife update
MOSES went to his mountain to bring back some tablets, and CD Tenerife President Miguel Concepcion followed suit. He travelled to Mount Teide’s National Park to announce the new seasonticket rates. Even better, he also confirmed the first new signing of the summer. Iker Unbabarena, a 23-yearold midfielder, has been released by Bilbao Athletic from the Segunda B, one tier below CD Tenerife. The former Spain Under-18 international had knee problems in the past, but Tenerife, confident he is fully recovered, have given him a three-year deal. The signing owes much to Tenerife coach Joseba Etxeberria, who was a longtime legend at the Basque club. And that connection
might yield another new boy, Gorka Gortuxeta, who scored nine goals in his 21 games last season. The National Park revelations were made on Tuesday 3rd July 2018, a date which describes the 3,718-metre height of Tenerife´s iconic volcano. The new season-tickets will range from 110 euros to 330 euros at the top-seating range, and you’d be lucky to buy a meat pie each game for that price, at any UK league ground. Other
squad news is as thin as the air on Teide, but the name of 23-year-old, La-Lagunaborn striker Nano, comes around every close-season, like Halleys Comet. A return would have to be on extremely favourable terms for Tenerife because he left the club abruptly, two years ago, just before the first day of the season. Serbian striker Felipe Malbasic could well be sacrificed by Tenerife to give them more wriggle room with their limited finances. The striker, who also scored nine goals last season, has three years left of a fouryear deal. Fans will be hoping to keep crown jewels Bryan Acosta and Luis Milla, who are, reportedly, both targets for Leganes. President Concepcion is well aware of the envious eyes focused on them, but he admitted at the Teide press conference that both players were not available. It’s less than two weeks until the first CD Tenerife pre-season friendly, at CD Marino’s Las Americas stadium on Wednesday 18th July, and the players report back for training one week earlier.
Telefonica rings up World Cup 2018 another mighty deal SPANISH broadband and telecommunications provider Telefonica has snapped up the rights to broadcast UEFA Champions League and Europa League football from rival Mediapro.
The firm will fork out 1.08bn euros for the 20182021 period, paying 360m euros for each of the next three seasons, it said in a statement. The deal follows its recent acquisition of La Liga football, from 2019-2022, with the multi-national now holding a monopoly on pay-per-view football rights in the Spanish domestic market. The agreement includes shared advertising rights for a set of new Movistarbranded channels to be launched in the coming weeks. Telefonica Spain’s President, Emilio Gayo, said: “The award of the main lots of the rights of La Liga last Monday cements Telefonica’s commitment to television with our customers’ most-watched content, now completed with the Champions and the Europa League.”
WORLD CUP FILES JAPAN made many friends with their spirited performances, especially during the 3-2 defeat by Belgium, after leading 2-0. And midfielder Gaku Shibasaki was particularly popular with his former club, CD Tenerife. That’s because a FIFA ruling meant his old club received
8,000 euros for each day he spent at the World Cup finals. The windfall relates to his time spent with Tenerife in 2017. SPAIN officials are already drawing up a list of replacements, following the failure of substitute coach Fernando Hierro. Heading the favourites is former
Everton boss Roberto Martinez, currently steering Belgium to their best finals in years. Another candidate with a UK pedigree is former Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores, now jobless, who is kicking his heels. Former Barcelona head man Luis Enrique, who has backers, is another free agent. ENGLAND coach Gareth Southgate has the Three Lions fans purring like Atomic Kitten at the
moment. The terraces have been ringing to the sound of former chart hit “You Can Make Me Whole Again”. The fans’ new version: goes: “Looking back on when we first met, I cannot escape it, I can never forget. Southgate you’re the one, you still turn me on, you can bring it home again.” And they will certainly be singing it again tomorrow (Saturday) during England’s quarter-final clash with Sweden.
EXTRA-TIME BEACHES are booming with sporting activity around Tenerife. Arona is hosting the Canarian School-Age Beach Volleyball Championships this weekend at Los Cristianos. All seven islands will be represented among the 82 players, and Tenerife will be represented by four pairs. The event reaches a climax on Sunday afternoon, and temporary seating is in place. So enjoy!
MARADONA’S bad week just keeps going. He was expected to be one of the 13 “legendary” judges selected to pick a shortlist for FIFA’s “World Best Player” award. But Didier Drogba, Ronaldo and Kaka have been chosen ahead of him. Ex-Chelsea player Frank Lampard has also made the panel, and even former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh is on board. The awards will be presented in London on 24th September.
