Ditch the squatters, now! Cont. from Front The Spanish Government’s recent warning, about prompt evictions for free-loaders, has been taken to heart by Luis Garcia, Arona’s Town Planning Councillor. Hoteliers and business owners in this tourist sector of Los Cristianos, who have complained, regularly, about the daily sight facing the passers-by, stress that the unsightly image is lowering the tone of the area. And they appear to have found a champion in Cllr Garcia, who said this week: “The squatters, living in this private property, are seriously damaging the image of the municipality, and we are demanding a speedy eviction. “They are harming the quality of life for our neighbours, and tourists who visit us, while affecting the area’s employers, who create wealth and jobs.” He added: “It presents a gruesome image, and it is not acceptable, which is why I am seeking swift justice now.” However, the situation appears to be getting even worse. Some three years ago, just three to four three

people were living rough in the building. But sources now believe there are at least 50 squatters occupying the abandoned premises. It has led to managers from hotels and apartments in the vicinity receiving complaints galore from customers, who pay top dollar to stay at these beachview establishments. They complain about the smell and the dirt, as well

as the abusive comments thrown at them by squatters, as they pass by. A hotel manager recalled one of his customers expressing his disgust at seeing someone leaving the premises with a large water bottle, containing what appeared to be urine. But the squatter didn’t seem to have a care in the world, as he was seen tipping the contents into

the sea. At one time, the abandoned building was closed off with metal fencing, and the few squatters disappeared. Now, however, most of the squatters there, seen coming and going, are young foreigners, and rumours abound that an organisation is now renting out space on the premises. Locals have spotted several people, some couples

and others comprising small families with cases and rucksacks, who are obviously living there. The building was abandoned at the outcome of the recession, and Cllr Garcia admitted: “The owners of the property have had a long, legal dispute between themselves, and its legality is in the hands of the courts.” The land on which the premises were built, as well as the building, are pending judicial litigation. Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, who has met the parties concerned, said: “A solution was not reached, but we need a decision, once and for all, about the squatters, because we need to normalise an area, which is one of the windows of Arona.” He added: “If a compromise can be reached, we will join forces with the Cabildo to begin working on an integral renovation of the area, which will lead to an in-depth change there. “We are working to make Arona advance on all fronts, but we find ourselves entrenched in situations, such as this one. “Of course, we will discuss the position, but we are also urging justice.”

High-flying proposals, at a price! FROM the year 2022, it will be possible to make your marriage proposal while flying over the lunar surface, to the sound of Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon. A one-week space flight will be carried out, aboard an autonomous capsule which will allow the two lovers to travel alone. The ApoteoSurprise agency in Paris, specialising in the organisation of extravagant marriage proposals, is launching this new, airborne service. And all it costs is 145 million dollars, which allows only the wealthiest of the wealthy to ask for the hand of their beloved, as they fly around the moon. It is no fantasy! Being able to travel to the Moon out of love is about to become a reality, because the agency’s ultimate goal is “to organise the most crazy and extraordinary marriage proposal of the last 13,800 million years”. From March 2022, any lover with money to burn can reserve the turnkey service at www. proposeinparis.com and benefit, five months later, from the following programme: *Physical training and technical training, prior to 12 weeks *Take-off on D-Day from the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

*A Richard Strauss transmission “Also Sprach Zarathustra, op.30” (2001 music: Space Odyssey) in the headphones of the space tourists, when the first effects of weightlessness are felt *Arrival in the lunar orbit three days later, with an overflight of the greyish celestial satellite… at an altitude of only 200-300 km *Interruption of all communications with the Earth for about thirty minutes, during which the capsule flies over the dark side of the Moon. *Transmission of the Frank Sinatra song, Fly Me To The Moon, halfway through the orbital flight, which allows the suitor to make his marriage proposal (engagement ring hidden in his suit) away from any other form of life *Spectacular image of the exit of the Earth behind the lunar craters and return trip, of almost four days, before the atmospheric re-entry and the final landing. The trajectory followed by the capsule will be similar to that of the Apollo 8 mission of 1968. The capsule, which can reach 38,000 km/h, will be equipped with eight cameras to immortalise the couple’s spectacular entry into the history of the spatial conquest, and the forever-love conquest!

Wolfpack Five leaves Spanish at all-time low THE trial of five men, including a Guardia Civil officer, accused of raping an 18-year-old girl at the Pamplona bull-running festival two years ago, has become a flashpoint for Spain’s genderviolence crisis. But despite what many saw as solid evidence, the men, all from Sevilla, were convicted on a lesser charge of sexual abuse. The verdict in the case, dubbed ‘La Manada’ (or Wolfpack in English), sent shockwaves through feminist groups in a country where gender violence has increased at alarming rates. And, last year, it was listed as the most violent on record. A total of 158,217 women were subjected to violence by men, which was an alarming 17.7% rise on the year before, though much of this was down to an increase in reports of such crimes. More worryingly, the number of minors brought before the courts for violence against women also increased from 179 in 2016, to 266 in 2017. Just last week, a boy was among a group of five men arrested for assaulting an under-age girl in Gran Canaria. They dubbed themselves “The New Wolfpack”, in a WhatsApp group, and were released on bail last week, to much fury. What shocked most people was how much the original Wolfpack case seemed to inspire the latest assault, with at least one of the alleged

abusers recording the attack on his phone. Last month, they had also been released on bail, in a shock decision by Navarra judges. They defended the move by saying the risk of them trying to flee would be limited by several conditions, including reporting to police three times a week, and relinquishing their passports! But Guerrero, the Guardia officer among the accused, was sent back to prison last week after attempting to get a new passport. It came after he and his friends were found guilty of “sexual abuse’ of a teenage girl on 26th April 2016, despite the victim insisting that the men took turns to rape her in a secluded building entrance. The group, Jose Prenda, Alfonso Cabezuelo, Antonio Guerrero, Jesus Escudero and Angel Boza were sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment and five years’ probation, as well as being ordered to pay 10,000 euros each to the victim. Guerrero was also given a 900-euro fine for stealing the woman’s phone after the brutal attack at the 2016 Pamplona festival. After the verdict was made public, protesters in Pamplona shouted: “This

justice is bull****! It’s not abuse; it’s rape!” They added: “If they touch one of us, they touch all of us!” The girl’s lawyer along with the Navarra government, has now appealed, even as demonstrations took place across the country. Protests forced a fierce debate about gender inequality in a country where 17 women were murdered in the first two months of last year alone, and where women are still paid 16% less than men. The trial itself was criticised heavily after the judge allowed the defence to introduce photos, taken by the victim, in the days after the attack. The snaps, taken by a private detective, showed her laughing and smiling with friends, suggesting she shouldn’t have been in a “happy mood” after such an attack. Women’s groups criticised the trial for being a cross-examination of the victim, and it kick-started Spain’s very own “Me Too” movement. Thousands of women shared their personal, heart-breaking experiences by using the hashtag #Cuéntalo (Tell it), showing solidarity with the young victim. The abused girl, 18 at the time, had kissed one of the defendants willingly.

She was walking towards his car when the other four men joined them and took her to the secluded spot. “When we arrived at the building entrance, I became so scared,” she told the court. “They took off my bra and started unbuttoning my top, then they grabbed my jaw.” She said she became frozen with fear and didn’t know what else to do but submit. “I just closed my eyes, I was in a state of shock.” She said the men talked to each other, only while taking turns to rape her, adding: “I could not even look at their faces; I only remember seeing their tattoos. I remember them laughing and one of them saying, ‘Hey man, it’s my turn!’” The youngster, who has since suffered nightmares and insomnia, has also endured periods of deep

depression. But last week, for the first time, she wrote to a Spanish TV network, pouring out her heart. “Tell a friend, a relative, the police, in a tweet,” she said. “Do it as you wish, but tell it. Do not stay silent, because, if you do, you are letting them win. “Nobody has to go through this. No one has to regret drinking, talking to people at a party, going home alone or wearing a mini-skirt.” It was a heart-wrenching appeal to a society which needs to pay attention to her plight … and her pleas. What the trial, verdict and heated debate has made painfully clear, is that the fight for women’s rights in Spain is far from over. A Navarra regional government spokeswoman said it would also appeal, after disagreeing with the verdict.

Jailed Catalonian ministers will be moved nearer home

HIGH-RANKING regional politicians from Catalunya are in the process of being moved to prisons nearer their homes. It is viewed as a step towards a meeting of minds, between the separatists and the national government. Spanish President Pedro Sánchez has, so far, arranged for former deputy leader of Catalonia Oriol Junqueras and Parliamentary spokesman Raúl Romeva, plus the leaders of the Catalunya National Assembly (ANC) and Òmnium Cultural, Jordi Sànchez and Jordi Cuixart respectively, to be moved to jails in the Barcelona province so their families can visit them. Until now, they have been ‘living’ in the prisons of Estremera and Soto del Real (Greater Madrid region), but they will soon be admitted to Lledoners penitentiary centre in Sant Joan de Vilatorrada (Barcelona province). Ex-Parliamentary spokeswoman Carme Forcadell and former regional minister Dolors Bassa, currently in the Alcalá Meco women’s prison in Madrid, will be moved to the Puig de les Basses jail in Figueres (Girona province). The jailed Catalonia politicians have been pushing to be moved nearer home for some time, and, once socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez took up office a month ago and agreed to have “dialogue” with the separatist faction, they found a listening ear in their new

Off-duty cop is helped by couple to halt thief national leader. Upon consulting with Supreme Court judge Pablo Llarena, who was responsible for them being jailed, the judge admitted there was no legal reason why the politicians had to be kept in Madrid, and could not be transferred to correction centres in their home region. In a BBC interview at the beginning of the year, Junqueras said being in prison for “allowing citizens to vote” was “demoralising”, and that Spanish jails were “freezing cold at night”. All politicians involved in the disputed independence referendum of 1st October are either in exile abroad to avoid arrest, or are in prison. These include the CUP’s Anna Gabriel, who has just obtained a fiveyear residence permit in Switzerland, and former Education Minister Clara Ponsatí, who is enjoying overwhelming

support from her Scottish neighbours and leaders, after returning to her old job as an economics professor at St Andrew’s University. The former right-wing PP national government, before being overthrown, stipulated that any move towards a region becoming an independent nation, even a nonbinding referendum, went against the Spanish Constitution. It was, said MPs, a criminal offence by default, and they refused to discuss the issue, preferring, instead, to let the courts decide. Dissenters, whether or not they agree with the idea of Catalonia becoming a stand-alone country, believe the Constitution needs to be updated, because its text remains the same, fundamentally, since it was rubberstamped in December 1978.

Corruption scandal involving 94 people NEARLY 100 politicians and business leaders have been charged with taking part in an Estepona corruption scandal. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office has accused 51 people, including former PSOE Mayor Antonio Barrientos, of being involved in the so-called Astapa corruption case. It is seeking a 10-year sentence each for Barrientos, his Chief of Staff Jose Flores, along with Francisco Zamorano, the town’s former Economy Minister. The Prosecutor’s Office is also seeking damages of 28m euros, which, it believes, is how much public money has been squandered. It has also requested the sacking of a further 39 people, still working at the Town Hall.

The action follows a 10year probe into the case, which ended in May last year, when an Estepona court agreed to open proceedings against 95 people, although one has died and four have launched appeals. In a 162-page indictment, produced a fortnight ago, prosecutors allege that the Town Hall had a backhander system, which saw officials rewarded with gifts and kickbacks, mostly from real estate companies, in return for awarding contracts mainly in urban development. The gifts included plasma TVs, trips, luxury watches, drinks at brothels and wire transfers either directly to officials or their family members. Former Mayor Barrientos, who has always maintained his innocence, is accused of bribery, influence-

peddling, moneylaundering and more. Astapa was first uncovered on 17th June 2008 as a result of a complaint filed by Socialist councillors David Valadez and Cristina Rodríguez. Barrientos demanded that his right “to the presumption of innocence” be respected, adding: “I am convinced that I will not disappoint all those who know me, and have trusted in my performance.”

AN off-duty policeman from Adeje, together with a couple of passers-by, grabbed a thief as he was running away from the crime he had just committed.

He was spotted last Tuesday in Las Americas, snatching a bag from an elderly woman tourist on Compostela Beach. The officer, who witnessed the attack, immediately decided to pursue the thief along the beach path. A couple of people, walking in the opposite direction on the path, saw that he was being chased and were able to prevent him from escaping. Together, the trio managed to hold the thief until the National Police arrived and took him to their station for questioning. He was soon identified as a 30-year-old Italian, who has been a San Isidro resident for several years.

NEWS IN BRIEF Obama’s royal connection FORMER United States President Barack Obama joined Spain’s King Felipe in Madrid last Saturday, for a tour around the Reina Sofia art gallery.

13th July - 19th July 2018

Wildfire wrecking woes WILDFIRES wreaked more devastation on the Iberian Peninsula last summer than at any time during its recent history, reveals the World Wildlife Fund.

In fact, the number of fires blazing a trail of destruction through the region in 2017 was an enormous 200% increase on the average for the last decade. The tragic toll added up to 500,000 hectares of scorched earth and untold damage to wildlife, as well as “some of the worst disasters ever remembered, leaving more than 100 people dead”, says its report.

Pictures released by the royal family’s Twitter account showed the ex and current heads of state taking in works, which included Pablo Picasso’s Guernica, as well as several by Salvador Dali. King Felipe present Obama with a book about the painting, regarded by some as one of the great artistic works of the 20th century, as a token of friendship. Royal sources said the book included a dedication, which read in English: “For President Obama, as a testimony of my friendship and affection, and in memory of our visit together to the ‘Guerinica’, an eternal icon of the most universal art.” The visit follows a speech last Friday, by Obama at the Summit of Technological Innovation and Circular Economy, in Madrid.

Galicia, Asturias and León, along with north and western Portugal, were worst affected, with multiple fires across their regions. Among the causes of the

devastation, the WWF cites climate change, rural depopulation, a chaotic urban model and human carelessness.

Tax bonus for our low-paid workers

Free booze banned in bars BARS, pubs and clubs in a particular sector of Benidorm have been warned not to continue handing out free drinks.

The ban relates to the area known as “Little England”, as part of wider crackdown on booze-related incidents there. The City Council’s decision comes as the area around the Calle Mallorca, also known as the “guiri zone”, has seen a surge in alleged, alcohol-fueled violence in recent weeks. Lorenzo Martinez, a local security official, said free-drink offers, designed to entice people into venues, must now be ruled out. He also said the police believed that many of the establishments promoting the offers were also using them as a cover to sell drugs. Budget is passed at last SPAIN’S parliament has passed its long-delayed 2018 budget, enabling the new, minority, Socialist Government (PSOE), led by Pedro Sanchez, to start work on next year’s accounts. It follows months of hold-ups, sparked by last year’s Catalan independence crisis. The budget, drafted by the recentlyousted PP conservative administration, includes a bid to bring the public deficit below 3% of economic output, for the first time in a decade. The EU has set Spain a 2.2% target for 2018, but Bank of Spain forecasts suggest it will be closer to 2.7%. Work on next year’s budget should get underway immediately, says the PSOE.

RESIDENTS with an annual gross income of between 12,00018,000 euros will save around 500 euros a year, thanks to the Bank of Spain’s tax reductions. Those who gross under 12,000 euros are not subject to income tax, anyway, and, if they pay it through retentions on invoices, or via their monthly payslips, they should receive a rebate after filing their annual declarations. Other taxpayers with gross annual incomes of more than 18,000 euros, subject

to upper limits, will also see their dues reduce, thanks to the 2018 budget. But this is only if they fall into certain special categories: large families, the disabled, and those with care duties to elderly, and disabled relatives, as well those with dependent, disabled children. Around 3.1 million taxpayers will benefit from the cut, according to the Bank of Spain, at a cost to the State of 1.5bn euros, which is quite a bit under the 2.2bn euros featured in the budget paperwork. And the Bank of Spain pledges that nobody will see his or her income tax rise,

as a result of the budget reforms. It warns that to fund the drop in income tax, the State will need to spend less and acquire additional resources, or increase other tax burdens. But that, it says, “could affect net income for various groups of taxpayers in unequal measures”. But the self-employed, who make up around one-third of the workforce, have seen their monthly Social Security stamp increase. It means that hard-pressed, non-employed workers will have to pay a set fee of 275.01 euros, irrespective of their earnings.

Going bananas over cocaine production! SPAIN’S Andalucia region is now one of the main entry points for cocaine into Europe, with thousands of kilos coming through the Algeciras port. The coke is hidden among bananas and frozen chickens, or simply stuffed in backpacks. And, thanks to growing demand in Britain and Spain, there is more of the A-Class drug in circulation than ever before. A report by the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime, released last week, stated that more than an unprecedented 1,000 tonnes of the white powder were seized in 2016, when figures last became available. “It’s an avalanche,” said an officer from Spain’s Special Response Team against Organised Crime (GRECO). “We have never seen anything like this.”

Meanwhile, astonishingly, drugdealers are having problems with the cocaine overflow. “There’s too much of it,” said an anonymous Galician dealer. “There’s more cocaine than is needed. There are warehouses right now in Madrid and Sevilla where it’s just piling up.” He claimed that one kilogramme is now being sold for 27,000-28,000 euros, when it used to sell for up to 35,000 euros. Most of the drug is being shipped from Colombia, the source of 68% of the world’s coca, which is the raw material used to make cocaine. The peace between the government there, and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), means the latter’s forces have demobilised and left large hectares of land up for grabs, allowing drug-traffickers to take advantage. Meanwhile, the instability in

An investigation began in April when the property owner told police about a robbery at her detached home. He said the thieves had climbed through a window of the detached house, in an isolated area. The police retrieved many of the jewellery items, sold at different locations in the North, and returned them to the owner. Thanks to evidence obtained throughout the investigation, the gang who broke into the premises were identified. They comprised four men and one woman, with three of them being held in custody and awaiting a court appearance. Police are now collecting evidence to arrest the other two people involved.

Man bottled in attack A CANARIAN man, from the Tenerife town of Anaza, in the North, was arrested by National Police in the early hours of last Monday, after stabbing a man with a broken bottle. The 23-year-old victim, also a Canarian, suffered moderate injuries to his neck from the attack, at around 4am, between the Papagayo beach club and the nearby ravine, at the end of the Veronicas strip. Staff from the beach club, who intervened after witnessing the vicious assault, called the emergency services and the police. And they held the attacker until the cops arrived. He was detained at the Las Americas station, while the victim was taken to Hospiten Sur for further treatment.

neighbouring Venezuela has meant a collapse in the border, making it much easier for the drug to leave Colombia. “There’s also been a change in criminal structures,” said Ignacio de Lucas, an anti-drug prosecutor at Spain’s High Court. “They don’t have such strict hierarchies as before. They’re not mafias, but a kind of franchise with more flexible and dynamic structures, with people who come and go. And this has made it very difficult to charge them as a criminal organisation.” The UK and Spain continue to be the among the top four markets for cocaine in the world, where 2.3% and 2% of the population, respectively, enjoy the drug. Meanwhile, Javier Cortés, head of Valencia’s Customs Surveillance

Service (SVA), described ports like Valencia as “black holes”. He added: “We need to pay more attention to businesses, nearly always from Latin America, that are specifically created to import cocaine,” referring to the fruit and fish businesses that use legal commercial channels to import the drugs. “We all know that we are never going to win the fight against drug-trafficking, so we have to prioritise. “Either we go after the small-time drug-dealer on the corner, or we go after the big organisations. Not Spain nor any other country has the resources to do everything.”

Irate Ryanair cabin crew Missing man join pilots in strike action found dead MANUEL Marcos García, 55, from Santa Cruz, who was reported missing in the Guamasa area days ago, was found, stabbed to death in the La Laguna municipality.

His body was discovered on Sunday morning at an abandoned house in Cruz Chica, popular with squatters. The house had been empty for a decade, following a devastating fire, and sources say the house has a dark history, with other bodies also having been found there. When it was finally recovered by police officers, they could see the victim, who had died in suspicious circumstances, suffered fatal stab wounds, especially one in his neck.

Failed kidnap attempt RYANAIR’S cabin crew, in the wake of their pilots’ walk-out, have announced their forthcoming strike dates over working conditions and pay.

It means that anyone planning to travel with the low-cost carrier later this month should be prepared for delays and possible cancellations. Flight attendants in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Belgium will down tools on Wednesday and Thursday, 25-26 July, independently of the 24-hour pilot strike in Ireland yesterday (Thursday). The cabin crew want their working conditions to be streamlined, with legislation in the countries where they are based, which would improve their existing terms. They also want the Irish budget airline company to recognise their union’s representatives, whose role is to negotiate on their behalf. Spanish cabin crew unions USO and SITCPLA, Portugal’s SNVPAC, Italy’s UILTRASPORTI and

Belgium’s CNE-LBC represent around 4,000 flight attendants in total, of whom 1,800 are in Spain, which is one of Ryanair’s largest markets. They staged a conference in Brussels to announce details of the airline’s first, co-ordinated, multi-national strike. And SITCPLA leader Monique Duthiers asked the media not to photograph members present because, she said: “Even now, in 2018,” they were among hundreds of thousands of employees in companies based in the EU, who feared repercussions from exercising their right to strike. Monique stressed that the union representatives were not Ryanair employees themselves, but spokespersons for different workers’ groups in each of the four countries, because the Ryanair staff say they are worried about “reprisals” if they continue with their protest. Among the issues raised by Monique were those of allowing workers “to choose who represents them” in their company, and “an end to the pathological conglomeration of temping agencies, who work

for Ryanair only, and are in the same building”. Monique, along with other union representatives, said Ryanair would call its cabin crew to the airports to cover flights. And, if these did not take off for any reason, the company would not pay them for the hours they spent waiting or preparing. Cabin crew are not paid until doors-to-manual, and they cease earning once passengers start to disembark. That means they do not earn anything for boarding travellers and helping them stow their hand-luggage. Criticism was also made about maternity and paternity leave, and that the crew were “not even allowed to drink the water they serve on the plane”, unless they paid for it themselves. Ryanair in Spain has said the strikes “do not make sense”, because, added a spokesman: “Cabin crew can earn up to 40,000 euros a year, working five days on, three days off.” He added: “They cannot fly more than 900 hours a year, receive free training, and earn commission from anything they sell on board.”

AN IRISHMAN has been arrested at Malaga airport, after attempting to take his children to Belfast under duress. The Guardia Civil said officers detained the suspect before he was able to board a flight to Belfast with the youngsters, aged six and nine. He was also said to have broken a restraining order, which prevented him from making contact with his former partner after arriving at her Mijas workplace. A police spokesperson said the man was travelling on an Irish passport and that he had dual nationality. The other travel documents were not issued by British authorities.

Stabbed in the neck A MAN aged 23, stabbed in the neck during a random attack on the Veronicas strip in Las Americas, last Sunday in the early hours, escaped without serious injury. The emergency services were called just before 4am, and, once the medics arrived, they stabilised the victim before transferring him to hospital. The National Police, who, along with a private security firm, also assisted, are now investigating the incident.

Deadly ‘electric’ ants are invading England ENGLAND is anticipating a summer invasion of “electric” ants, following the discovery of the country’s largest-ever colony in Eastbourne.

The ants, also called Asian Super Ants, came to light in the UK when they were found in imported pot plants in Gloucester nine years ago. Since then, colonies have been found in Essex, London, Norfolk, Cambridge, Yorkshire and Suffolk. And a huge gathering of up to one million of these ants have now been found in Eastbourne, East Sussex. Previously, the biggest English colony was found at the National Trust’s Hidcote Manor Gardens, in Gloucestershire, where 35,000 Asian Super Ants were discovered in just one junction box in 2009. This new infestation, which stretches across two residential streets in Eastbourne, Sussex, is around one million strong. Colonies of the insects, nicknamed “Electric Ants” because they are attracted to electricity cables and junction boxes, often cause blackouts and fires in businesses and homes. And inter-connected nests, which can stretch for miles, sometimes span up to 50 acres. The ants, scientifically known as Lasius Neglectus, are native to Uzbekistan, Turkey, and some parts of south-eastern Europe. However, there are serious concerns that the huge Eastbourne colony could signal an enormous invasion across the country. Paul Bates, who runs Cleankill Pest Control, said the Eastbourne colony, now being dealt with, was the biggest he’d seen, spreading out

between two, large, residential roads, and affecting dozens of homes in the seaside town. He said: “It’s the biggest infestation I’ve heard of in the country, and, had it not been caught in time, could have spread rapidly, in huge numbers. “We are dealing with it, but I must warn people to look out for them because they are attracted to electricity and can cause blackouts and fires.” He estimated that there were one million or more ants in the colony and urged residents to keep an eye out for the pests, should the colony have extended from the area. Lasius neglectus forms “supercolonies” of inter-connected nests, and one found in Spain had 112 million workers and 350,000 queens. They are between 3-6 millimetres long, and are slightly smaller than the native, garden ants. However, they are much more aggressive and out-compete native varieties for food and space. The ants thrive in temperatures as low as -5°C, making them perfectly adaptable to the vagaries of British weather. They are too small to bite people, but they attack other ants by swarming and biting, before smearing formic acid on the open wounds. They have a fondness for junction boxes and plug sockets, but it is unclear whether they are attracted to electricity or to the small, dark spaces. Mr Bates added: “Electric ants can be very disruptive because they will gather around cables or junction boxes and can cause them to short out. “Our main worry is that more have come into the UK in imported potted plants, and we will have difficulty getting rid of them because they are resistant to our usual ant

treatments. Bosses at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have been alerted to the Eastbourne infestation. They commissioned a report soon after the Gloucestershire colony was found, to assess the potential spread of the ants, with options for control and eradication put in place. The University of York,

whose experts worked on the risk assessment for the Government, estimated that electric ants could cost England £1.7bn every year, through damage and management costs. Dr Elva Robinson, an ecology lecturer at the University of York, believes that the electric ants, which look similar to black garden ants, but are

more aggressive, could have a “big impact” on our native ecosystem. She said: “We believe the invasive ants have the potential to have a big impact on the native ecosystem. In the sites we have studied, it is clear that they are excluding the native ants. “They are clearly dominating, and where they cluster, native species are being pushed out.”

Immigrants rescued COASTGUARDS rescued 27 immigrants after discovering them in a small boat, almost 50km south-west of Almeria. The Salvamento Maritimo picked up the eight women and 19 men, including one child, shortly before 7.30pm last Friday, all believed to be from sub-Saharan Africa. They were soon transferred to Almeria’s port, with coastal sources confirming they were all in good health.

A ‘magical evening’ in Golf Costa Adeje SOPRANO Davinia Rodríguez has promised the concert-goers “a magical evening” tonight (Friday) when she performs with Tenerife Symphony Orchestra in Adeje. In fact, it will be the first open-air concert in the borough for the orchestra, who are appearing at Golf Costa Adeje, with Jader Bignamini conducting. Davinia added: “This will be another career dream realised; to sing in the Canaries, for my people, in such a magical and beautiful setting, full of energy and good vibrations.” She is from Gran Canaria and can’t wait to entertain what will be an international audience. “They are all welcome

and we are looking forward to singing and playing,” she said. “It will be a magical night, so don’t miss an event you will remember forever.” Adeje Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreia Garcia, and Cabildo Cultural Director José Luis Rivero Plasencia, spoke with the press on Tuesday at the event location. Ermitas Moreira said the idea came about to help make this part of the island a top choice for open-air concerts, attracting tourists and

residents alike. From the first mention of the idea, she said, the Cabildo and Turismo de Tenerife were behind the initiative. “Both ourselves in Adeje Town Hall, and the Cabildo, understand that it would become an attractive option for this tourism part of the island, with the corpo-

ration already looking ahead to future concerts of this kind.” José Luis Rivero said the Cabildo were delighted they were playing in the South of the island, as were orchestra members themselves. “For us, it is very important, and this performance space is un-

beatable,” he added. “I don’t believe there is another like it on the island, and it gives us enormous possibilities.” Adeje Council is providing a transport service to bring people to and from the concert, with a free shuttle service running from the Adeje School of Music

and from resort zones, starting at 7.30pm until 8.45pm, and afterwards, from 10.20pm. Tickets for the concert, 15 euros each, are on sale online via Tomaticket and in various Mary Paz shoe shops in Siam Mall, Outlet El Galeón and CC San Eugenio.

Mountain barbecues are banned, to save forests!

Drug dealer sold coke to a minor A SENGALESE man, Serigne SS, is facing a possible seven-year prison sentence, requested by the prosecutor, for selling Class A drugs, specifically cocaine, to an Arona minor.

The accused was arrested in October 2017, in Las Americas, when the National Police spotted the accused handing over a bag containing one- quarter of a gram of cocaine, in exchange for 20 euros.

The substance was analysed and proved to be 22% pure, and, when the case went to court, the prosecutor proved that the dealer knew he was distributing to an under-18 minor. When Serigne SS was arrested, police found his 110-euro takings from selling the drug, as well as cannabis resin worth up to 50 euros. The case was presented on Monday in the courts, and, as well as the request of seven years imprisonment, a fine of 147 euros was also requested

Tons of frozen old meat would have gone on sale THE Canarian Government has placed a banned, in case the sparks on barbeques and small, agricultural fires being lit in the mountains, because there’s a risk of forest fires.

The temporary ban was installed on Tuesday because of the anticipated high temperatures and winds in the archipelago, along with the predicted calima. And, in Tenerife alone, temperatures are expected to rise to between 30-34 degrees.

As well as the temporary ban on small fires, operating building machinery and even soldering have also been banned, in case the sparks trigger a small fire. Also cancelled, temporarily, are firework displays in areas close to dry vegetation. In addition, a public notice reminds smokers to act responsibly when putting out their cigarettes. Tenerife Cabildo has also asked people to refrain from recreational walking, while the islands are on a calima alert.

NEARLY 11,000 packets of grosslyexpired frozen ham and cured meat, about to be put back on sale, have been seized in Andalucia. The Guardia Civil discovered hundreds of tons of old meat in a cold store in Vaqueros, Granada, with some out-of-date products

having expired as far back as 2015. During three separate raids, officers found that labels and use-by dates had been tampered with, in a bid to put the products back on the market. But it is unclear whether this is the work of multiple organisations. Initially, officials intercepted a refrigerated truck carrying a number of

ham legs and frozen cold-cuts, which had begun to rot, or carried “anomalous labels. They escorted the driver to his destination, a nearby industrial warehouse, where they found 10,700 pieces of ham and cold-cuts, with years-old expiry dates. The products were seized and a health inspection by the Junta de Andalucia is underway.

A 100-year war

sparks lifetime of friendships… THE “Give Peace A Chance” pop hit, written by John Lennon and sung by him and Yoko Ono, is considered the unofficial anthem for the American nightmare known as the Vietnam War.

That long, hated conflict, like most wars, was replete with death, destruction, dislocation and dissent. Lennon’s lyrics, asserting that the absence of war equates to peace, resonated profoundly with the sentiment of the times. Yet brotherhood, good humour and fellowship were the defining characteristics of a strange 100-year “war” between a small Andalucian municipality and the Republic of France. But how? Lijar is a small, isolated, hilltop hamlet, in Almeria’s interior, with 500 inhabitants. It’s a twohour drive inland, over some curvy mountain roads. And mulberry trees, used in the Arabic manufacture of silk, still grow on the hillsides.

But the most impressive part of Lijar’s history is the events of over a century ago. Local tradition has it that in 1883, Spain’s King Alfonso XII made a state visit to Paris. It did not go well. He was insulted, spat upon and showered with stones and rotten eggs. When word of this disrespectful visit got back to Lijar, Mayor Miguel Garcia called an emergency village council meeting. Outraged, and with his Spanish pride dented by the insulting French display, Mayor Garcia took action. The minutes of that council meeting proclaimed: “Our King Alfonso, when passing through Paris, was stoned and offended in the most cowardly fashion, by the miserable hordes of the French nation.” The Mayor reminded his council that when Napoleon’s troops had invaded the area 80 years previously, “just one woman, who was old, wretched and bedraggled, but a daughter of Spain, nonetheless, had, single-handedly, cut the throats of 32 Frenchmen billeted in her home”. He added: “The example of this woman is enough to let the inhabitants of France

fear this village of Lijar. Although it has only 100 able men, we propose to declare war on all of France, since one man of our village is worth 10,000 Frenchmen”. The council meeting concluded, unanimously, to declare war on France, formally. The council forwarded this motion to the Spanish Government in Madrid, and by messenger to the President of France. Thus, Lijar remained “at war” with France for the next 110 years. Although no shots were fired, nor prisoners actually taken, citizens never forgot. Village schoolmaster Ezequiel Campos recently referred to it, saying: “We were in a state of war, and everybody in Lijar knew about it. It’s been handed down from parents to children… a sort of oral tradition.” Locals in Lijar are prone to tell colourful stories of their experiences of

meeting the occasional French tourists, who were passing through the town. The residents would feign hostilities and war games against the unsuspecting visitors. But when told the story, the two factions often ended up with a shared drink or meal, completing the proceedings with an embrace as friends. There are also a number of personal accounts of Lijar travellers, who, while visiting France, would take the time to explain their “declaration of war” to their unsuspecting French hosts. Both parties would often laugh and enjoy the fellowship, and, to this day, lifelong friendships between the “warring factions” remain solid. The stories produced by the war seem to have brought forth the fact that, for the most part, both sides were warm and

friendly people, prone to laughing at their ancestors’ intentions. Finally, in 1993, Mayor Diego Sanchez called for a peace treaty, proclaiming: “One hundred years is a solid enough date to end all of this. Stopping a war can’t be a bad thing nowadays, can it?” Dignitaries from France and Madrid attended a formal peace-treaty ceremony, signed in Lijar’s only square.

It used to be called Plaza Generalissimo Franco, but, appropriately, was renamed Plaza de la Paz (Peace Square). A special bond between the locals of Lijar and the French Republic remains to this day as a result of this “war”. John Lennon would probably have agreed that, in this instance, giving war a chance can be a blueprint for peace. And Yoko? Unavailable for comment, unfortunately!

Loro Parque Foundation’s hunt for its 2019 projects LORO Parque Foundation has announced a 15th August deadline for receiving next year’s new projects, with $1,000,000 (around 970,000 euros) to be distributed among those accepted.

A committee of independent experts will evaluate all the entries on behalf of the international, non-profit institution, whose main sponsor is Loro Parque. It supports projects which focus, primarily, on parrots and marine animals, aiming to improve the conservation status of endangered species. In addition, it also promotes, actively, the conservation of their habitats and of biodiversity in general. Loro Parque, considered 2018’s Best Zoo in the World by TripAdvisor, covers all the operational expenses of the Foundation, and 100% of all donations are used for environmental protection. Over the years, more than 150 projects have been carried out with its support. Outstanding 2018 projects Among the list of this year’s projects is Whale Bay, which began last March, on the island of Boavista, to monitor one of the four mostthreatened populations of humpback whales, in the only known breeding site for this species in the Eastern North Atlantic. The number of females with calves was 15-16, which is quite acceptable considering that no new-borns were observed in 2016. Thanks to Whale Bay, scientific data has been collected to support the declaration of Sal-Rei Bay as a marine-protected area for the conservation of humpback whales. A code of conduct, or good practice, among whalewatching operators and vessels will be promoted and adopted, and national and international biologists will be trained in basic cetaceanstudy techniques. Throughout this year, and thanks to the Foundation’s support, Guayaquil Great Green Macaws (Ara ambiguus) have been released in Ecuador. They were all born in controlled environments and came from confiscated poaching specimens. And, thanks to modern satellite systems, monitoring them in the Ecuadorian

jungle, we obtain scientific data of great importance for the protection of this species and all those related to it, such as plants, insects and even amphibians. Another interesting project, started recently in Gran Canaria’s Sardina del Norte, is one of ElasmoCan’s projects, linked to the protection of the Angelshark. It is co-financed by Loro Parque Foundation and Poema del Mar is collaborating with outreach work. It is complementary to another undertaking, initiated in 2016 for the identification of Angelshark specimens, and, subsequently, carrying out a census. It contributes to the conservation of this species through continuous monitoring, the establishment of movement patterns, the description of its habitat and public awareness of its existence, as well as the need to protect it. A final, fascinating project is that of the Lear’s Macaws of Brazil, which is a seriouslythreatened bird, in one of the driest regions of the country. Four birds were entrusted to the Foundation in Tenerife by the Brazilian Government, and, after just a few months,

they had reproduced more than 30 specimens. Since the start, nine specimens have already been sent to their country of origin, and more will soon be added to complete the recovery of this species in its natural environment, where scientific studies have been carried out at all levels. Nine species saved from extinction Thanks to its conservation efforts, Loro Parque Foundation has also saved nine parrot species from total extinction. Since its 1994 inception, the Foundation has supported projects for the conservation of endangered species, with a financial contribution to date of over $18 million (nearly 16m euros). The change of “threat” category in many of these nine species is a worldwide, environmental, conservation success, which makes this non-profit organisation the most effective, internationally, in this area. Migrants discover new Euro passage THE European Union’s border agency chief has warned that the Morocco-to-Spain route could develop into the next key pathway for migrants, determined to leave Africa. The warning follows data, released by the International Organisation for Migration, which showed that more than 6,000 migrants arrived in Spain during the first six months of 2017. Greece and Italy had previously recorded some of the largest numbers of migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe. And the EU member state last week agreed a controversial plan to curb migrants and refugees arriving from the Middle East and Africa. The creation of secure centres to house them within the EU, and sharing migrants between neighbouring states, are included in the proposal. The issue was pushed to the forefront of the EU agenda, following Italy’s refusal to open its country’s ports to migrant rescue ships.

Are you certain you have escaped UK tax? By Paul Montague

Partner, blevins Franks

Understanding the UK residence test

IF you are a British expatriate, it is crucial to establish your tax residency. You may be settled in Spain, but if you spend time in Britain or retain property there, your worldwide income and gains could still attract UK income, capital gains, and, potentially, inheritance taxes. Avoid an unexpected tax bill, or even a potential tax investigation, by taking care to understand the rules of the UK “Statutory Residence Test”. It is not just about counting days spent in Britain; you need to work through the following three tests. (Note that “years” mean a UK tax year (6th April - 5th April), and a “day” starts at midnight.) 1. Automatic overseas test. You are treated as not UK resident if you meet any of these conditions: • UK resident in one or more of the previous three years, and present for under 16 days in the UK in the current year. • Not UK resident in any of the previous three years, and present in the UK for under 46 days in the current year. • Work overseas full-time (35+ hours a week), spend under 30 days working in the UK (a “work day” counts as 3+ hours), and present for no more than 90 days in the UK in the year. 2. Automatic residence test. If you do not score on the first test, you are deemed UK resident if you meet any of these conditions: • Present in the UK for 183+ days in the year. • Only or “main” home is in the UK (available for 91+ days and used for at least 30 days in the year). • Work full-time in the UK for any

period of 365 days without a break of 31 days or more. 3. Sufficient ties test. If your residence position has not been determined under the first two tests, the next step considers your connections to the UK: • Family: spouse and/or minor children resident in the UK. • Accommodation: available for 91+ continuous days (even if you spend just one night there). • Work: working in the UK for at least 40 days a year. • Substantial visits: spending 90 days or more in the UK, in either of the two previous years. • Favoured country: spending more days in the UK than any other single country. This works on a sliding scale; the

more ties you have with the UK, the less time you can spend onshore without becoming UK resident. While the rules may disregard up to 60 days spent in the UK under “exceptional circumstances”, this only applies where you have no choice, and circumstances are unforeseen and beyond your control (unlikely to include visiting an ill relative in the UK). Generally, you will only be treated as tax resident in one country, but it is possible to be dual-resident in the UK and Spain under respective domestic laws. While the double tax treaty may offer protection from paying tax twice on the same income, you may still be liable for taxation in both countries, so take advice to get it right.

This is just a summary of the rules, which are detailed and highly complex, so take specialist advice to establish exactly where you stand. Wherever your liabilities lie, a tax-planning review could let you take advantage of opportunities to minimise your tax bill, and meet your obligations in the most suitable way for your personal situation. Tax rates, scope and reliefs may change. Any statements concerning taxation are based upon our understanding of current taxation laws and practices which are subject to change. Tax information has been summarised; individuals should seek personalised advice. Keep up to date on the financial issues that may affect you on the Blevins Franks news page at www.blevinsfranks.com

World’s oldest toy-boy! Allen Hodgkinson RIP (3rd March 1941-7th July 2018) In loving memory of Allen Hodgkinson, born 11th March 1941 in Lancashire, to Violet & Mitchell, husband to Doris, brother to Stuart, Father of Mitch & Gilly and Grandfather to Jamie & Marcos. EVERYONE called him “Odgie”… and he was popular with everyone. He loved having a laugh (and a few pints). He was a unique character, with a cheeky grin and a sparkle in his eyes, and he was much-loved by his family, especially his wife, Doris. They were married for 56 years and together for over 60. They were both from Lancashire, originally, and have lived in Tenerife for over 30 years, mainly on Golf del Sur. He was 77, the same age as his wife, who is older by one day, and the family joke was that Dad was her toy-boy! Odgie had a sporting history: rugby captain, amateur jump-

jockey, tennis player, water-skier, snow-skier and golfer. He was also a successful business man, beginning his working life as a TV technician. He went on to sell shoe-bindings and was also a fish-fryer, to name just a few jobs. He was also an expert in the kitchen, and his friends and family will surely miss his home-made pork pies and piccalilli! He was an exceptional husband, the best dad and father-inlaw, brother and doting grandfather, and will be greatly missed by family and friends. In recent years he enjoyed gardening, and he loved pottering about in it with the dogs… and having a beer under the tree. He had fought against his leukaemia since 2011, among other complications along the way. The family thank all the Candelaria Hospital staff, especially the doctors and nurses of the haematology, urology and pneumology departments, for their excellent care and attention. They also thank all their friends, who have supported him and the family over this period. A memorial service will be held on Monday (16th July) at 2pm at San Blas Church, Golf del Sur.

Holiday Horrors: CW choice Caught on Camera

For the Love of Cheese.... Granville tries to tempt the locals with a big wheel of cheese which seems to be on the turn. Leroy, sick of riding the old shop bike, is desperate for a new van to make his deliveries, so Granville turns to Gastric for help. Meanwhile, Mrs Featherstone continues to strike fear into the heart of Mr Newbold as she suggests a modest advance in their new relationship.

Real-life stories of holidays gone wrong. This episode includes what happens when a group of girls discover that they have a plane to themselves, the secret to beating the rush to the poolside sunbeds, and the man visiting some of the most unusual tourist hot spots. There’s also amazing clips filmed by holidaymakers who might have wished that they had never taken time off work!

choice At the age of 23 and suffering from depression and shyness, Sarah Moore moved from her family home near Edinburgh to the beautiful but remote Scottish island of North Ronaldsay, a place with a population of fewer than fifty people. As part of BBC One’s Our Lives, this documentary follows Sarah’s life on the island and the people she meets there. Like many remote communities, North Ronaldsay has its fair share of struggles - whether it’s the cancellation of air services that bring vital supplies, extreme weather conditions or the need to hold down multiple jobs to make ends meet, Sarah has had to adapt to an entirely new way of living and thinking to survive. This character-driven documentary looks at a unique way of life in incredible place that may not be around for much longer.

EU’s olive row with US

THE European Union Commission has complained that the high tariffs, imposed recently on Spanish olives by the US, are “simply unacceptable”.

It comes as the US Department of Commerce announced that tariffs, ranging from 7.52% to 27.02%, would be needed to counteract Spanish olive prices, arguing that the fruits were being sold for between 16.88% to 25.5% under their true value. However, the EU Commission said it was already having a major, negative effect on olive producers in Andalucia, in a region where olive production “has a very significant economic and social impact”. In 2017, exports from Spain to the US were worth $50.3 million (around 43m euros). According to Spain’s association of olive producers and exporters

(Asemesa), exports of black olives to the US fell by 42.4% in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2017, dropping from 6.9m kilos to 4m kilos. A spokesperson for the EU commission said: “The decision by the US Department of Commerce to impose unreasonably-high and prohibitive anti-subsidy, as well as anti-dumping duties, on Spanish olives, is simply unacceptable. “This is a protectionist measure, targeting a high-quality, successful EU product, popular with US consumers.” Luis Planas, Spain’s Agriculture Minister, who said the tariffs were unfair, announced that he would be raising his concerns at an EU agriculture meeting in Luxembourg next week. The final US decision on the imposition of the tariffs is expected to be made on 24th July.

La Liga welcome for the rescued cave kids SPAIN’S La Liga football league has invited the schoolboy team rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand to watch a game, to meet their “heroes”, once they have recovered from their ordeal.

La Liga President Javier Tebas said in a statement on Wednesday: “When the time is right, and everyone involved is ready, I’d personally like to invite the children and the coach to attend a La Liga match. “We’d like to host them and share with them the joy football can give, and I hope this gesture can help, after the events of the last few weeks.” La Liga said it wanted the 12 boys and their football coach, who form the Wild Boars football squad, to “watch many of their football heroes in action, in person”. The boys were trapped for more than two weeks after setting off to

explore a cave complex in northern Thailand and getting caught by rising floodwaters. One of the boys was wearing a Real Madrid T-shirt, and La Liga said it had messaged all its clubs to invite them to participate. Football’s world governing body, FIFA, invited the Wild Boars to Sunday’s World Cup final in Moscow, but they will still be too weak to come, and must stay in hospital to make sure they have no infections. Sadly, though, two boys are being treated for pneumonia symptoms. The last of the group was finally extracted on Tuesday, after a painstaking and dangerous international rescue mission, led by Thai Navy SEALs. The boys have received scores of support, from people as varied as US President Donald Trump, football star Lionel Messi and US technology entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Shampoo for baldies A COMPANY based in León has launched the world’s first shampoo for bald people.

Chief executive officer of Carobels, Juan José Cabero – who describes himself as ‘bald and proud’ – says the shampoo is neither designed to prevent hair loss, nor to help regrowth, but merely to care for the scalp when it does not have hair to protect it. He said people were surprised to see the new product when it hit the shelves, since ‘nobody ever thinks about things like that’. “The scalp needs special care, and this need is heightened when it’s exposed,” Cabero says. Ordinary soap or shower gel does not provide this level of care, he explains, and he invented the shampoo called Doctor Bald, a line from his brand Beardbury’s, when he realised there was nothing on the market anywhere to meet the ‘cosmetic and dermatological needs’ specific to people with no hair. It is gradually being sold in barbershops in the provinces of León, Valencia and Madrid and across the region of Galicia, and may well hit the shelves in mainstream stores shortly. Doctor Bald is suitable for those with some hair but not a full head of it, such as those suffering severelyreceding hairlines through male pattern baldness. It recently won the Innovation Prize in the Pure Beauty Health Awards, presented during the Beautyworld

Middle East 2018 fair in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Beardbury’s was up against over 300 companies from 29 countries, including giants such as Wilkinson and Nivea.Carobels has targeted barber shops as a main point of sale, having discovered via its own research that such establishments are undergoing a high-street Renaissance – fre-quently at the expense of unisex hairdressers’. In 2017 alone, a total of 426 barbers opened shops in Spain and the number continues to rise. The 21stcentury barbers’ in operation offer a much wider range of men’s beauty services than their forefathers, now that the stigma of males caring about their appearance is wearing off. Recent analyses show that it is becoming far more main-stream for men to spend money on cosmetics and treatments, such as moisturising cream and hair products, in the last few years.

Drivers’ licences

By Emma

from Motorworld

WE are going to clarify the categories on a Spanish Licence, showing readers what they are allowed to drive. There are currently 15 categories: AM, A1, A2, A, B, BTP, B+E, C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E. The BTP category has now been eliminated to comply with EU rules. This only happened last year, so many people still have it showing on their licences. If you have, don’t worry! Each of the categories represent: AM: Allows the holder to drive a two-or-threewheeled scooter, or light four-wheeled vehicle, although the category can be limited to three and four wheels. The minimum age for holding this licence is 15. A1: Allows the use of a motorcycle up to 125cc, with

a maximum power of 11kw, and a ratio of weight/power of 0.1 kw/kg, and three wheelers with a maximum power of 15kw. The minimum age for holding this is 16. A2: Allows the use of a motorcycle of up to 35 kw, with a ratio of weight/power of 0.2 kw/kg. The minimum age for holding this is 18. A: Allows all motorcycles and three-wheeled vehicles. Minimum age is 20, although, until 21, a threewheeler of a maximum of 15kw cannot be used. To summarise, the A categories are for scooters and bikes, and three-wheeled vehicles. B and B1: This is probably the most common category. It allows the use of cars, vans and 4x4s, where the weight doesn’t exceed 3.500 kgs, and where they are designed and constructed to transport no more than eight passengers, plus the driver. This type of vehicle can have an attached trailer, providing the maximum authorised weight doesn’t exceed 750 kgs. Minimum age is 18. You may drive a “pair of vehicles”, comprising a car, van or 4x4, plus a trailer,

where the permitted weight exceeds 750 kgs, as long as the total weight doesn’t exceed 4.250 kgs, this being under a Category B licence. After three years, a category B allows the holder to use a scooter/motorbike of up to 125cc. B+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the B category, accompanied by a trailer, with a maximum permitted weight of 3500 kgs. C1: Vehicles not authorised under the D1 or D category, whose maximum weight exceeds 3.500 kgs, but doesn’t reach 7.500 kgs. This includes large vans and small lorries, and vehicles that are designed and constructed to transport no more than eight passengers, plus the driver. Said vehicles can tow a trailer with a maximum weight of 750 kgs. C1+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the C1 category, accompanied by a trailer or semi-trailer, whose weight exceeds 750 kgs, but whose combined weight doesn’t exceed 12.000 kgs. Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under

the B category, plus a trailer or a semi-trailer, whose weight exceeds 3.500 kgs, as long as the combined weight doesn’t exceed 12.000 kgs. C: Vehicles not authorised under the D1 or D category, whose maximum authorised weight doesn’t exceed 3.500 kgs. This includes large vans and small lorries, and vehicles that are designed and constructed to transport no more than eight passengers, plus the driver. Said vehicles can tow a trailer of up to 750 kgs. Minimum age of 21. C+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the C category, accompanied by a trailer or semi-trailer, whose weight doesn’t exceed 750 kg. Minimum age of 21. D1: Vehicles designed and constructed for the transportation of no more than 16 passengers, plus the driver, whose maximum length doesn’t exceed eight metres. Said vehicles can tow a trailer of up to 750 kgs. Minimum age of 21. D1+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the D1 category, accompanied

by a trailer, whose weight exceeds 750 kgs. Minimum age of 21. D: Vehicles designed and constructed for the transportation of more than eight passengers, plus the driver. This refers to minibuses and buses. Said vehicles can tow a trailer of up to 750 kgs. Minimum age of 24. D+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the D category, accompanied by a trailer, whose weight exceeds 750 kgs. Minimum age of 24. So how long do each of the categories last? Categories C1+ C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D and D+E are valid for five years, until the holder reaches 65, then they are valid for three years. All remaining categories are valid for 10 years, until the holder reaches 65, then five years after that age. However, all the timescales can be reduced because of illness or deficiencies. If you are confused and require any clarification, or need to exchange your licence, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Tongue woes can be licked By Val Sainsbury

Numerous problems can affect your tongue such as pain, sores and swelling, and changes in taste, colour and texture. Often, they aren't serious, but, sometimes, your symptoms might occur because of an underlying condition that requires medical treatment. You can prevent many tongue problems by practising good oral hygiene, and simple, home remedies may help relieve your symptoms. Symptoms may include: • a partial or complete loss of taste, or changes in your ability to taste sour, salty, bitter, or sweet flavours • difficulty moving your tongue • swelling • a change from the normal colour, or patches of colour that are white, bright pink, black or brown • pain either all over the tongue, or

only in certain spots • a burning sensation, either all over the tongue, or only in certain parts • white or red patches, which are often painful • a furry or hairy appearance of the tongue There are several causes of tongue problems, including the following: Burning sensation: this may present itself in women who are post-menopausal. It can also occur because of exposure to irritants, such as cigarette smoke. Change in tongue colour: a brightpink colour on the tongue is most often due to a deficiency in iron, folic acid or Vitamin B-12. An allergic reaction to gluten can also cause this.

A white tongue is usually a result of smoking, drinking alcohol or poor oral hygiene. White lines or bumps may be an inflammation called oral lichen planus. People think this occurs because of an abnormal immune response that may stem from an underlying condition, such as Hepatitis C, or allergies. Change in texture: if your tongue appears to be furry or hairy, it's most likely caused by a course of antibiotics. Radiation to the head or neck can also lead to this symptom. It can also develop if you consume too much of an irritating substance, such as coffee or mouthwash, or if you smoke. Tongue pain: This usually occurs because of an injury or infection. If you bite your tongue, you may develop a sore that can last for days, and be very painful. A minor infection on the tongue isn't uncommon, and it can cause pain and irritation. Inflamed papillae, or taste buds, are small, painful bumps that appear after an injury from a bite, or irritation from hot foods. A canker sore is another common cause of pain on, or under, the tongue. This is a small, white or yellow sore that can occur for no apparent reason. Canker sores, unlike cold sores, don't occur because of the herpes virus. Some possible causes are mouth injuries,

abrasive ingredients in toothpastes or mouthwashes, food allergies or nutritional deficiencies. In many cases, the cause of a canker sore is unknown, and referred to as an aphthous ulcer, which usually goes away without any treatment. Other, less common, reasons for tongue pain include cancer, anaemia, oral herpes, and irritating dentures or braces. Neuralgia can also be a source of tongue pain. This is a very severe pain that occurs along a damaged nerve. Neuralgia can flares up for no obvious reason, or it can be because of: • ageing • multiple sclerosis • diabetes • tumours • infections Tongue swelling: a swollen tongue may be a symptom of a disease or medical condition, such as: • Down's syndrome • tongue cancer • Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome • an overactive thyroid • leukaemia • strep throat • anaemia When the tongue swells very suddenly, the likely reason is an allergic reaction. This can result in difficulty breathing, which is a medical emergency. If this happens, get medical help right away.

Accion del Sol News It’s so cruel

This makes our job extremely difficult, because our refuge already has 230 dogs who are looking for loving homes. Please do come and visit us if you are interested in adopting a dog. Each one is fully-vaccinated, micro-chipped and castrated, and has a clean bill of health, so you can rest assured that your dog will have the best start to life. New puppies! WHEN K9 staff arrived at the refuge one morning, they found two, sealed, potato sacks outside, which were moving. Staff found six puppies, which were obviously from two different litters.

The two smallest pups, Lina and Leo, were quickly adopted, and went to lovely homes. But this left Leila, Lucy, Luke and Lola, who are still waiting at the refuge. They were a little shy at first, but are getting better every day, and, despite their rough start in life, remain hopeful for the future. They will be medium-to-large sized, when fully grown. If you would like to know more about these babies, please contact us for more information, or visit the refuge to meet them. We also have three, lovely, three-month-old pups who are looking for homes. These brothers are called Snap, Crackle and Pop, and you can find out more about them on our website and Facebook page. K9 staff also found a box

full of pups outside the refuge, on another morning. These four little girls were only two weeks old, and

will remain in a foster home until they are old enough to be adopted. Meet our dogs

St Patrick’s Day remains sacred to The Islanders AS you know, Keddy’s Entertainment loves catching up with all types of acts on the island, whether you are a soloist, duo, band, acrobat or any other fantastic artiste, who entertain us all year round in Tenerife. And it really was a pleasure to meet up with The Islanders, an exciting new band, performing throughout the South. It is said that there are no coincidences in life, and that everything happens for a reason, which is kind of how The Islanders were formed. At the beginning of the year, Ciaran McCloy (guitar and vocals) had the idea of throwing a St. Patrick’s Day event in Golf del Sur, hoping to meet some like-minded musicians with the same influences and ideas. Accomplished musicians Elinor Darlington (violin and vocals) and Matt Hallsworth (bass guitar and vocals), had recently moved to Tenerife. They placed an advert on a Facebook group, looking for other musicians interested in meeting up and playing folk music. Ciaran saw the advert and responded… and the rest is history! The Islanders play an individual brand of music in Tenerife. They refuse to use backing tracks, and everything is 100% live. Thus, they are able to tell a unique story through each traditional song and tune they play together. Fusing violin, rhythm guitar and bass, three unique voices and their passion for music, The Islanders are a welcome addition to the live music offering on the island. Ciaran, influenced by Irish folk music, and The Dubliners, particularly, had already played a few gigs on his own. But he knew that if he encountered a fiddle player, they would be able to offer something different to the music scene in Tenerife. The trio played a few slots around Tenerife on St Patrick´s Day, finishing off by headlining the official San Miguel de Abona celebrations in Golf del Sur’s

Club house, where they went down a storm. Over the next few weeks, the trio were asked to play a few stand-in slots for bars needing cover, and, consequently, they started to attract the attention of both bar-owners and music lovers alike. With more venues interested in the band, it became obvious that The Islanders could become a full-time project. That led to the trio taking a leap of faith, and they began to focus on increasing their repertoire. The band locked themselves away for a few weeks to practise and polish a selection of classic Irish folk songs and tunes, before approaching the main Irish venues in Tenerife, to get their foot in the door. Elinor Darlington has been playing the violin since she was five, and, then, from the age of nine, she studied classical violin and piano at Manchester’s prestigious Chetham’s School of Music. Despite her classical training, Elinor has always been brought up around folk music, with multiple professional musicians in the family. She began to branch out,

musically, during her teenage years, joining forces with other folk musicians in the north-west of England to form several folk bands, over the last decade. And, with Irish blood on both sides of her family, she was always drawn to Celtic folk music. Elinor also qualified as a secondary-school music teacher, and also taught violin and piano privately in the UK. Last year, Elinor and Matt moved to Tenerife together, in search of a better life in the sun. Matt Hallsworth started learning guitar at the age of 13, switching to bass guitar as his first instrument soon afterwards. And, over the years, he has experimented with a wide variety of musical styles. He was a vocalist in a couple of metal/rock bands in his late teens and early twenties. He has also produced electronic dance music, and has played on the UK openmic scene as a singer/songwriter. With Scottish ancestry, Matt grew up around traditional folk music, and this background drove him to found

a contemporary folk group with Elinor for several years, before the move to Tenerife. Matt trained as a sound engineer at university, and, with years of experience in live sound, plus a passion for recording, he hopes to start recording with The Islanders at his home studio in the near future. Ciaran McCloy has been singing and playing rhythm guitar since he was about 16, but only ever as a hobby. Then, looking for a musical outlet in 2016, he started playing open-mic nights and session nights in Irish bars around Tenerife. With his folky style of singing and playing, and his love for the origins and stories behind each Irish song, he was soon asked to cover a few nights here and there, building confidence and experience. It wasn’t until late last year that he started to pursue a musical path seriously, and he became a regular on the Irish scene here. In little over six weeks since playing their first gig together, The Islanders have secured a daytime residency, Monday to Friday,

3-5pm, at The Irish Oak. They also play five nights a week in some of the mostestablished Irish music venues on the island: The Claddagh, Murphy’s and The Whiskey Jar, to name but a few. With Elinor´s unrivalled fiddle-playing, Matt´s accomplished bass-playing and Ciaran’s unique folkstyle guitar and vocals, The Islanders look to have a superb future here in Tenerife, and maybe further afield! When interviewed, the trio confessed that they were both surprised by, and grateful for, this happening so quickly. Their biggest challenge, these days, is finding the time to practise the evergrowing list of requests they receive each night! To find out more about The Islanders, and where they play, as well as viewing some of their recent videos, check them out on Facebook @ TheIslandersLiveMusic. Lastly, the Keddy’s Entertainment staff wish you all the best for the future, and we will be sure to see you around, to enjoy the unique sounds of The Islanders.

CD Tenerife preview

Ladies’ football

Casting the net wide Bursting with talent EGATESA Granadilla Tenerife, hungry for more success after last season’s fourth place in Spain’s top flight, have assembled a 25-strong squad for a new title bid.

Cover in all positions is a key ingredient, and quality reinforcements will make for keen competition, after they report back for training on 1st August. The squad was set at 24 players, but the midweek chance to add UD Tacuense wide player Aleksandra Zaremba was too good to ignore. The Polish player will add extra width to the side and has good technical ability. On the other new arrivals list are keepers Aline Reis from Brazil, and Venezuelan Nayluisa, together with Liucjia, from Lithuania, and Brazil’s Borini, both gracing the midfield. An established B team and youth section has ensured the upward progress of new players, such as Aithiara, Salazar and Paola Hernandez. Welcome returns from injury have come as a big boost to the squad.

BREATHING in didn’t fool anyone as the Tenerife squad checked in for pre-season medicals and training on Wednesday.

In fairness, there hadn’t been much over-indulgence, with just one new player, Iker Undabarrena, needing a check after signing the previous week from Bilbao Athletic. But more newcomers are about to follow him. Tenerife have signed a 19-year-old striker, from FC Azam in Tanzania. Shaaban Idd Chilunda comes with glowing recommendations as a strong forward, who scores plenty of goals. The Santa Cruz club already have another Tanzania player in the B team, Faridi Mussa, who has settled in well. Shaaban may be a long-term investment, with the B team his first call. But he will get his chance to shine in the pre-season friendlies. Sporting Director Serrano is also close to securing left-sided forward Joao Rodriguex, on loan from Chelsea, with an option to buy. The 22-year-old Colombian joined Chelsea in 2013 but has never played for them. A series of loans last season took him to Mexico’s Tampico Medero, for whom he scored eight goals in 23 games, which was, by far, his best haul. It’s another gamble, but Tenerife haven’t got money to throw around. There’s plenty of scope for new talent because Milan loanee Longo is not returning after top-scoring with 12 goals last season, despite constant injuries. He has now relocated to Huesca, in the Primera Division. Fellow-striker Casadesus, who was not retained, has now popped up at Alcorcon, in Tenerife’s division. But Tenerife need to release players to juggle their limited finances, and Serbian Felipe Malbasic is a target for Greek side AEK Athens. There’s also the unresolved problem

Defender Andrea is fit again, and inspirational striker Maria Jose Perez now has a clean bill of health after a leg injury. Add those to the reliable heart of the squad, and it’s clear that the ladies will be looking to push on to greater heights.

Local football coming home of Vitolo, the midfielder who served eight seasons in two spells with the Santa Cruz club. He had just been given a one-year contract extension by coach Pep Marti, who was sacked and replaced by current boss Joseba Etxeberria. The new gaffer soon showed that the veteran midfielder didn’t figure in his plans, so the club are trying to negotiate the player out of the club, and his extra year. But he is clinging on. All pretty standard drama, building up to the start of a new term. There’s five weeks, several friendlies, and, hopefully, more new faces before the league gets underway. Part of the build-up is the annual Teide Trophy game at La Orotava, which is being held on Saturday, 11th August. There’s always strong opposition for this fixture, and the organisers are trying to land German Bundesliga side Mainz 05 this time. It would be a good challenge for the new-look squad as it knits together. Rejoice, rejoice… Tenerife’s first preseason friendly is on Wednesday (18th July) at CD Marino, in Las Americas, at 8pm. It’s a good chance for them to include a few of the more promising B-team players, as well as the latest additions to the club. Entrance is 10 euros.

NO matter how compulsive the recent TV football has been, you can’t beat a live game, in domestic surroundings, and CD Marino are fired up and ready for a new season, with some new faces, and fresh enthusiasm.

The first friendly is at home, against CD Tenerife, at 8pm on Wednesday (18th July) in the Estadio Antonio Dominguez, next to the Green Hospital in Las Americas, with tickets a mere 10 euros at the turnstiles. Marino’s Tercera Division campaign was a little patchy, but for his second season, coach Zeben Hernandez hopes to instil more consistency.

Most of last season’s best players have returned, bolstered by some promotions from the titlewinning B team, and some new blood to the club. Antonio Samuel, a left-sided player, joins from Las Zocas, Gaizca, a forward, played for Union Guimar, while Guti arrives from Preferente team Icodense. Many of last season’s B team will get a run-out in Wednesday’s friendly, including Edgar Doble, already earmarked for regular first-team action. Tenerife’s South v North derby curtain raiser always attracts several thousand fans, and it’s a excellent chance to slip back into the live football groove.

Top Crew are on high

SUTERS 20:30 Crew took top spot in the First Division with an 8-0 victory over The Red Devils, who must be concentrating on their football team, rather than their darts! Chasing all the way are Pas O Nadas ‘A’, who, thanks again to Daddy Cool’s two maximums, plus one from Wattie, had an emphatic 7-1 home win over Palms Pool Bar, for whom Dennis hit a 108 check-out. In third place in the league are The Loch-In ‘A’, who won 6-2 against Picasso’s, with Wayne hitting a 13-dart leg, and their opponents’ Per checking out with a 114. Mick had some excellent dart scores for the visitors, as Sandy’s completed a cracking 8-0 win when Mad Hatters came visiting. And The Pub dispatched Legends 7-1 at home. Match of the night was held at Marilyn’s, where the ‘A’ team took Gaffers all the way, Joe hitting a 180 and a 14-dart leg, and Dan chipping in with a 16-darter and

a 177. The home team’s Tony enjoyed a maximum himself. At Ourplace, the Playboys took the trebles to record a 5-3 win over Phoenix Bar, despite Mitch’s 180 and John’s treble-top, bull, finish. Clouseaus had a superb 6-2 triumph at home against Emerald Lounge, whose ‘B’ team welcomed Naughty Nautas. Only Eamonn showed any resistance for the visitors, as the home team won 7-1. Nutty Nautas were on the wrong end of the same scoreline, as Pas O Nadas ‘B’ romped home, assisted by Karen’s 84 finish. Ourplace Breakaways won the 701 game to take a 5-3 home win when hosting Nauta Nomads, while Sundowners welcomed Ourplace Playgirls, and kept their good form going as they secured a comfortable 6-2 win. The only draw of the night came at Scruffy Macs as the Lads shared the points with The Loch-In Bullseye’s. The visitors won the team game, and new owner Cat enjoyed a 100 finish.

EXTRA-TIME BASEBALL: Puerto de la Cruz Marlins have won the Spanish title for the 10th time during their 21-year existence. They landed the latest triumph with a 7-2 home win over Valencia Astros at their home diamond last weekend. The club compete in the Division of Honour against mainland teams, which involves constant travel. Youth development is extremely important to the club, who have links to Atlanta Braves of the NBL and often send young players to their training camps.

Taking a gamble on Las Vegas goldmine Basketball THE latest player to jump ship at Iberostar Tenerife is one of their star players, American Mike Tobey, who is moving to Valencia. That leaves Tenerife short in the specialist, pivot position. But forward-planning may come to the rescue as new players are sourced. The club’s club Sporting Director, Aniano Cabrera, has been in Las Vegas, watching the NBA summer camp. And he is ready to pounce on much-needed reinforcements. Meanwhile, the draw has been made for the opening group stages of the European Champions League. Tenerife have been drawn with Reie Venezia (Venice-Italy), PAOK Salonica (Greece), Hapoel Holon (Israel), BK Opava (Czech

Republic) and Telekom Bonn (Germany). There are 56 teams in the competition, and 32 of them must work their way through the initial group. The remainder will come in at the latter stages.

Boxing

Tiger Cheikh’s title tilt By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife update

SHOWDOWNS don’t come tougher than the bill-topping, super-welterweight bout at Adeje Boxing Night next Saturday (21st July) in Las Torres sports hall. Ali Mondian, the undefeated WBC Latino champion, has a mandatory defence against Cheikh Dioum, the Senegal Tiger.

The undercard is pretty tasty, too, with four more boxers from the Manuel Povedano stable completing a full- professional lineup, against opponents to be confirmed on the night. Armenian Artem Haroyan will be looking to re-establish himself after a few setbacks. Selen Agoudi, from Mali, is out to build on his last two wins, both ahead of the final bell. The African super lightweight is based in Tenerife, but his last two fights were a year apart. Now, though, he is keen to keep his name in the headlines.

Anos Munoz is another fighter who needs to build his career, after beating British boxer Marty Kayes when making his pro debut last year. The final build-up clash before the title fight features the more experienced Cuban Yasmani Calzadilla. He won his first four professional fights in the US last year, then defeated Michael Kelly in Adeje last year. The Saturday action starts at 7pm, and tickets are 10 euros in advance, from outlets where you see the Tiger poster, or 15 euros on the door, on the night.

Neville puts the boot in to turgid England star FORMER Manchester United defender Gary Neville, now an ITV football pundit, is expecting to discover that Harry Kane was dealing with an injury during England’s run to the World Cup

semi-finals in Russia. Kane, the Three Lions captain, had put himself in pole position for the Golden Boot, and also in contention for the Player of the Tournament award, during his brilliant group-stage campaign. The Tottenham striker scored twice, including a dramatic stoppage-time

winner, in England’s Group G opener against Tunisia, and, subsequently, helped himself to a hat-trick as they thrashed World Cup debutants Panama 6-1 in Nizhny Novgorod. Kane was then rested for final group-stage game against Belgium, before being re stored to the starting XI by Gareth Southgate for England’s memorable, last-16 de feat of Colombia, in which he netted from the penalty spot, during normal time and in the subsequent shoot-out. However, he looked notably subdued during the last-eight victory over Sweden, and Wednesday night’s agonising, semi-final, extra-time defeat by Croatia. And Neville - Pictured, be lieves his lack of movement in both those matches indicated an injury issue. “I’d be amazed if we didn’t learn in the next few days that Kane had been carrying an injury since the Colombia game,” the former England international told ITV viewers. “He wasn’t even moving around in the second half against Colombia, and against Sweden he was static. It’s not an excuse… he’s just not looked right!” There were fears that Kane had suffered a calf problem during the bruising clash

against Colombia, although it was said that he was mere ly suffering from a touch of cramp as he continued to train, before facing the Swedes in Samara. Former England manager Glenn Hoddle was another pundit to voice concerns over his fitness, before the showdown with Croatia. And Kane went on to miss a golden opportunity to double England’s lead at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, before be ing confined to the periphery for the most part. Quizzed on his talisman, after the full-time whistle, manager Gareth Southgate insisted there had been “no issue” be fore the game. And, with six goals to his name in five matches, Kane is still on course to become the first English winner of the World Cup Golden Boot since Gary Lineker in 1986. Romelu Lukaku is, perhaps, the only other realistic contender for the coveted award, bar some extraordinary he roics from France’s Kylian Mbappe or Antoine Griezmann, during Sunday’s final. However, it remains to be seen just how involved either star striker will be on Saturday afternoon, as England and Belgium meet again, in the third-place play-off in St Petersburg.
