Father wipes out family, and then hangs himself WHEN a concerned grandmother called the Guardia Civil to say she hadn’t seen her La Orotava family of four in days, officers broke in to her daughter’s nearby home and discovered a horror scene. Paula Teresa, a sociable young mum from the municipality of La Orotava, was found dead on Monday, along with her two small daughters, aged five and three. Initial thoughts by the officers were that the 32-year-old mum and her daughters were all victims of domestic violence. But their concern grew because there didn’t seem to be any signs of physical violence. The Guardia continued to search the property, only to find that the father, Israel Teresa, a 43-year-old exmilitary man, had hung himself in another bedroom. Because of the suspicious circumstances, and how the bodies were found, officials felt that it could have been a suicide pact. But Paula’s distraught mother, along with her daughter’s friends, told the investigators, quite forcefully, that it was not in
her nature to do something so horrific, especially putting the lives of her children at risk. Sources reveal that the entire family were wellknown and well-liked, and that no-one would ever have suspected anything. However, there were a few rumours that the family were suffering financial difficulties, and that there were problems in the relationship, even though Israel had been working at the North Airport as a helicopter mechanic. But, following investigations, and a conclusion of the autopsy, officials
now have another story. Both daughters were suffocated, while Paula had been strangled. The family dog appeared to have been poisoned, and and Israel had hanged himself. Paula had another child, a boy from a previous relationship, but, fortunately, he wasn’t aware of the events that happened at his home. He had been spending time with his father, only a short distance from the family home. The Guardia Civil also learned that Israel, 42, was ex-military, having served some time in Afghanistan and receiving medals of
commendation. Again, sources said he might have been suffering a form of post-traumatic stress. Israel had left a suicide note, outlining the reasons for his actions. He said he couldn’t take it any more because he needed assistance and couldn’t get it from anybody. He also felt completely helpless, with his hands tied. Colleagues of Israel, as well as people who knew him, revealed that he had mental-health issues, similar to those of many war veterans. The autopsy reveals that the tragedy of the family
was down to domestic violence, at the hands of Israel. Police are waiting for the toxicology reports to be concluded, to rule out possibilities of the family being drugged before the horrible events occurred. The distraught grandma said that the last time she saw them all was at a family party on Saturday, and she had been extremely concerned, because the family lived just a few doors down the street. She told the officers that she had been banging on the door for days, but with no response.
Danger Red Flag alert is completely ignored Cont. from Front That’s because Jimenez, co-ordinator of the area’s lifeguard service, realised it was obvious that the youngsters had been neglected by their parents, despite the Red Flag warning about adverse weather conditions. The first incident happened last Friday, when one of the minors, an eight-year-old French girl, jumped into the sea from a considerable height, from the rocks, into a swell. She was watched by her
mother, yet the Red Flag spelled danger because of the strong under-currents there. But while lifeguards focused on rescuing the small girl from the waves, they couldn’t help noticing that the mother, on top of the rocks, was laughing at the whole situation. The panic-stricken child was being dragged under the waves, even though her father was there, reaching out and trying to take her hand. But, in the process, he put himself at risk. An angry Jimenez said: “The worst thing about
it is that they had been verbally warned about the conditions and told not to jump. But the father blamed us, once we’d got them out of the water.” The second incident occurred at the same beach last Monday, this time involving a four-year-old Polish girl, who had been left alone on the beach. Suddenly, the tide went out, but the lifeguards, aware of what was coming next, rushed to the shore in anticipation of huge waves. By the time they got there, a wave had already taken the
small child, but the heroic life-savers managed to rescue her, and, thankfully, she was okay, despite being in a state of shock, and crying, inconsolably. The lifeguards tried to locate her parents, and when they did find them, they were lying face-down, asleep on rented sunbeds, some 60 metres from where they left their daughter playing. Jimenez said: “They had no idea what happened, and how close their daughter had come to drowning.” In a single shift at the Playa de la Arena beach, the two
lifeguards posted there completed five rescues, four of them involving minors, with the Red Flag in full view throughout! Jimenez, at a loss to explain why the incidents had occurred, said the flag was there for a reason. Yet, after the two rescues, three teenagers, aged 14-16, decided to jump into the sea from the same spot, totally ignoring the signs. Bewildered Jimenez is now pleading with the public to respect the flags, and the verbal warnings from the lifeguards.

Hiker hurt in fall
A WOMAN aged 45, who injured her legs after falling during a hike at Masca, was rescued by emergency fire-fighters on Tuesday afternoon, then treated by medics from the waiting ambulance. The fire service was called to the scene because she fell in a remote spot, and an ambulance was also dispatched to the area. Once the woman was secure, she was moved to the ambulance, and medics confirmed that she had suffered considerable injuries to her legs. She was stabilised and transferred to the emergency department of a hospital in the north, where she received further treatment.

Disaster-building case is suspended
Mobile pharmacy aims to provide a hospital service
THE Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health Department, in conjunction with hospitals in the north of Tenerife, has launched a mobile, out-patients’ pharmacy… in an ambulance! It will be used, specifically, to attend to patients in the north, who need medication they would normally receive in hospital. The mobile pharmacy, based at La Laguna’s University Hospital, will also attend to patients who have difficulty getting to hospital for their dressings, or for their daily treatment. The hospital treats an average of 200 patients a day, providing them with their medication, along with indications of how to take the medicines, with advice on the possible sideeffects. The mobile pharmacy, which begins service on 10th August, will attend to some 80 people daily, and its aim is to provide the same service as the hospital.
THE judge handling the April 2016 building-collapse case in Los Cristianos, when seven people lost their lives, has suspended the investigation, because the accusations cannot be addressed clearly.
Judge Sofia Elena Valdivia, in the Arona Court, has been in charge of the Julian Jose tragedy since the start, and, on Tuesday, she ruled that the case will be suspended provisionally, because she could find no criminal responsibility for the tragic event. She said there could have been a multitude of reasons why the building collapsed, and, for this reason, no criminal responsibility could be
placed. The judge argued that the origin of the events could have been because the building was in an extremely poor condition. Surveyors stated in their reports that they were aware of the poor quality of materials used. They also noticed poor workmanship and poor plastering, and said the building looked as though it were deteriorating. The report was not used against any developers,
because these were the materials used when it was being built. For this reason, the judge insisted that there was an obligation by authorities for “rigorous controls”, when checking the stability of old buildings, and those which have been constructed poorly, because they pose a risk of damage. “We cannot wait 50 years for these buildings to be legally checked,” she added.
A double bonus for drug police NATIONAL Police have smashed a criminal gang in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, dedicated to money-laundering and drug-trafficking.
Nine people have been detained and a further six are at present are under investigation. They are all Spanish, and those being held, aged between 25-50, were recognised by the police because of their past criminal records. During the operation, officers confiscated 12 cars and two boats, and they also investigated four private properties, as well as freezing 12 bank accounts.
Police estimate that a sum of 1,650,000 euros in black money was used to carry out several
operations by the gang. The probe began in 2015, when the gang’s activities came under the radar. But,
as a result of the police digging, another group were taken apart in the process that year. The cops seized a million euros in cash, as well as 236kg of cocaine, 15kg of amphetamines and 120kg of hashish. In addition, they raided and closed down nine laboratories. Thanks to this investigation the police were able to identify the bosses linked to the current gang. The probe demonstrated how the drug-trafficking cash, accumulated by the criminals, was moved through various property companies in Gran Canaria. The corresponding police reports have been completed and presented before the courts, and all people involved are awaiting a hearing.

British trio jailed after helping Indian frauds
THREE British men, aged 38, 40 and 45, were detained in three of the archipelago’s airports when police discovered that the trio were using Canarian airports as a bridge for illegal immigrants, travelling from India to the UK. Most of the Indians were using false documentation, so they could make out they were Afghan asylumseekers. A further six people were arrested, three men and three woman, aged between 26 and 33, for falsifying documentation. The National Police began their investigations when they noticed an influx of
Indian nationals at Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote airports, all trying to get to the UK by using third-party documentation, and posing as asylum-seekers. As a result of the investigation, officers uncovered a criminal organisation, formed by three British men. Police have now become aware of the gang, and have discovered that members had been operating from the Canary Islands since 2016. The three Britons have been charged with favouring illegal immigration, and also with being part of a significant criminal organisation. As soon as the police report was issued, the detainees were presented before a judge, who, in turn, sent them all to prison.

Drunk driver’s drop too much
A CAR accelerated off the road and dropped down a deep embankment on Wednesday afternoon in the north of Tenerife. When the emergency ambulance arrived at the scene, medics promptly
Branch kills boy, four
A BOY aged four, was involved in a tragic, freak accident, when strong winds blew off a branch of a palm tree, which fell on top of the youngster, causing his death. The incident happened on Tuesday at around midday, when the small child was at a Gran Canaria summer camp, operated from the Chan Sanchez de Ingenio primary school in La Capellania. The tree, part of a group, situated in the school’s playground, was pruned in December by tree surgeons, who gave it the all-clear. La Capellania Council, which admitted that another child had been injured during the incident, called for two days of mourning throughout the municipality.
transferred the driver to Candelaria Hospital’s emergency department for immediate treatment. The vehicle was a total write-off after crashing into a wall, knocking it down,
and then plummeting down the slope. Fortunately, there were no pedestrians in the area at the time of the accident, and no other parties were involved.

Snake’s alive… and how!
A WOMAN who found a python in the S-bend of her toilet in Spain, when she went to the bathroom, calmly rolled up her sleeves and released the snake. It had recently eaten a rat and was wedged tightly in the pipe. The incident, which would normally have sent people running in horror, happened in Lorca in the province of Murcia in southern Spain. But the woman who found the python used to keep snakes and remained calm. It is believed that the snake had escaped from the flat of an upstairs neighbour.
La Laguna’s break-in fears
RESIDENTS of Las Mercedes are worried about the number of robberies from restaurants and bars in this La Laguna area. This week, robbers rammed the front door of a local bar with an off-road vehicle and stole a slot machine, containing some 100 euros, as well as a cash register and other items. The vehicle was later found, a few kilometres away in the Mesa Mota area.

Cabildo lifts small-fire ban THE ban on small fires and barbecues, in forest and mountain areas of Tenerife, has now been lifted by the Cabildo. But residents have still been urged to take extreme precautions when outdoor activities are
carried out in these places. The Cabildo reported that because weather conditions had improved on the island, it had now moved to a pre-alert position. This permits fire in authorised areas of recreational centres, as well as carrying out other fire-related activities.
But officials still stress that extreme caution must be taken when burning agricultural or forestry residues. This also includes working with machinery or tools, which could generate sparks in agricultural or forestry spaces, such as brush-cutters and welding equipment.
Woman badly injured as ambulance crashes A WOMAN aged 73 suffered serious injuries, and another four people were injured, in a collision between an ambulance and a car last week in the El Botanico area of Puerto de la Cruz All four people are aged between 56-79 and the Canarian emergency services were informed swiftly, just before 5pm. The caller said an ambulance had turned over on to its side after colliding with a car, which sent emergency ambulances, as well as the fire service, to the scene rapidly. On arrival, the rescue teams attended to some of the injured parties, but two people were trapped inside the car, so the firemen had to help release them for medics to assess them quickly.
Once they had all been stabilised, they were transferred to a nearby
hospital, where all parties received treatment and were kept under observation.

Markets are open again
GUIA de Isora Council has informed people in the municipality that the Alcala and Playa San Juan traditional markets, which were suspended a few weeks ago, have resumed services again, from this week. The markets were forced to suspend their activities for two weeks to revise the
legalities of the 28 stalls. They will continue with the same timetable as before: Monday in Alcalar, Plaza del Llano, from 8am-1pm, and on Wednesday in Playa San Juan’s Paseo del Bufadero, during the same hours. The Council says that locals and tourists alike will again be able to enjoy the markets, which offer a variety of items on the stalls, dedicated specifically to pastries and craftwork, as well as agricultural and ecological items.

Dead skateboard hero given a Royal honour SPAIN’S skateboard hero, Ignacio Echevarria, has been awarded a George Medal, posthumously, by the Queen.
He is honoured because of his life-saving actions during the London Bridge and Borough Market terror attacks, in June 2017. The medal is granted in recognition of “acts of great bravery”, and, although the original warrant for the George Medal did not, explicitly, permit it to be awarded posthumously, this was changed in December 1977. Terrorists in a van had mowed down pedestrians on London Bridge, before crashing it on the south bank of the River Thames. They then ran to nearby Borough Market, storming pubs and restaurants, and stabbing whoever
they could find, before Metropolitan police officers shot them dead. A total of 48 people were injured in the attacks, and eight people were killed, who, in addition to Ignacio, included Canadian Christine Archibald, 30, James McMullan, 32, from Hackney, Frenchmen Alexandre Pigeard, 26, Sebastien Belanger, 36, and Xavier Thomas, 45, plus Australians Kirsty Boden, 28 and Sara Zelenak, 21. Ignacio, a 39-year-old Spanish banker in London, had confronted the terrorists, bravely, armed only with his skateboard, which allowed many people to escape. The George Medal award committee noted that Ignacio Echevarria “inevitably avoided more losses by running towards the terrorists to allow others to escape”. After this London terror
attack, there were a few days of uncertainty, when Ignacio was reported missing. However, the Foreign Office confirmed shortly afterwards that he had died at the hands of one of the attackers. The autopsy confirmed that he had been stabbed in the back. Just last month, Ignacio’s father paid tribute to his son, one year on from the attack. “He did what he had to do. I wouldn’t expect less from him,” said Joaquin Echeverria. “I want it to be known that he always wanted to be good.” The Spanish government, posthumously, awarded Ignacio the Great Cross of the order of Civil Merit for “extraordinary services”. Spain’s King Felipe VI also honoured his bravery in a speech given in the UK parliament during his state visit last year.

HEALTHCARE reforms on the cards will include a gradual return to free prescriptions for State pensioners, including those whose pension comes from another country, such as retired expats.
The news was announced by Health Minister Carmen Montón (pictured), to the delight of all pensioners. Free prescriptions, irrespective of their income, were always available until 2012. That’s when the then right-wing PP Government applied a charge of 10% of the retail cost of their drugs, which also applies to anyone whose gross annual income is less than 18,000 euros. For those with gross earnings of 18,000-100,000 euros, most prescription drugs, other than some which are subsidised and attract a 10% charge, are payable at a rate of 50%. Yet there is a clear difference in spending power between the two income levels, and the fact that gross earnings translate to different net incomes for the self-employed versus employees. For the latter, 18,000 euros a year works out at around 1,320 euros a month, while for the former, it translates to 1,000 euros monthly. As a result, a high number of residents, workers and pensioners alike say they don’t bother to collect their prescriptions, or they stop taking their medication because it is “too expensive”. Ms Montón says the “most vulnerable” pensioners, specifically those on the lowest incomes, will be the first to be relieved of any prescription charges, and this will eventually extend to all those of State retirement age, or older, (currently 65, but progressively now increasing to 67). Other measures include making free public healthcare available to everyone living in Spain, legally or otherwise, and irrespective of their working or retirement status, which is how it used to be until a few years ago. And Ms Montón estimates that around 280,000 people in total will benefit from this move. Non-professional carers, such as family members or friends, will be put back “in the system”, which means their years looking after elderly, sick or disabled dependents will count towards their State pension
9 CW
Mighty healthcare reform will benefit the old and young
entitlement. Ms Montón refers to these people as feminine, because, statistically, the overwhelming majority of elderly care, in particular, is carried out by female relatives. Many of them are of working age, yet they have had to give up their jobs to look after their loved ones. This means that several years of their “stamp” is not being paid, which risks their full State pension entitlement. But that will change in the near future. For next year, a complete and comprehensive plan will be set up to protect children from violence, which is considered to include minors living with a parent or guardian, who are victims of domestic violence. In addition, a full suicideprevention system will be installed, in response to figures which have shown that the most frequent cause of death from nonnatural causes is by the deceased’s own hand. In the Comunidad Valenciana alone, more residents die through suicide than in traffic accidents, according to the regional health authority. Ms Montón recalled at last Friday’s Council of Ministers meeting: “Suicide is the main cause of preventable death. In 2016, a total of 3,568 people in Spain killed themselves, or 10 per day, which is twice as many as the number of people who died in traffic accidents.” Three in four were men, she said, although the
vast majority of those who attempt suicide were female. She added: “As a public administration, we are obliged to commit ourselves to prevention, via early
risk-detection circuits, preferential assistance and awareness actions.” Child poverty is another priority area, given that figures show that as many as one in three children lives well below the breadline. Strengthening the care system is one of Ms Montón’s priorities, she says. Traditionally, through Spain’s strong, closeknit family culture, public authority care provisions have been sparse, despite the former socialist government’s attempt to fund benefits to cover costs, with unpaid relatives taking on the job. The ageing population is also presenting new challenges to public health, says Montón, and stringent structures to ensure abuse
of the elderly does not happen must be key in any decisions her ministry makes. She also wants to bring back the Spanish Youth Council and the General Directorate of Consumer Protection, which have been disbanded in recent years. And all regional health authorities will be able to share patients’ medical hidtories, via a central system. It means that treatment can be streamlined across the country. Additionally, patients will be able to access their own records online and can collect prescriptions from any pharmacy in Spain, irrespective of where they are issued.
Colombians at war …with each other NATIONAL Police have detained two Colombians, one a 37-year-old, who was stabbed, viciously, by the other one, who was also held, in the early hours of last Sunday. The latter was one of two men involved in the attack, which occurred at around 4.30 in Fañabe’s Achaman nightclub. The third man’s nationality was not revealed, and he was allowed to go free, anyway. Earlier, an emergency call was made from the club, requesting assistance from police and an ambulance, because of the violent, two-against-one fight. When the ambulance arrived, medics stabilised the victim before taking him to a nearby hospital to treat his wounds. He is now out of danger and recovering, in custody! The other person arrested had already been transferred to the
holding cells at Las Americas police station. He is a known resident, from Los Olivos, Adeje, and is awaiting a court appearance. This is the second
stabbing case to be reported in the South of Tenerife this month. A 23-year-old was stabbed in the neck with a glass, in the Veronicas areas, the previous Sunday.

Religion Strike causes Ryanair to not worth prayer call off 400 Spain flights ina schools RYANAIR, the troublehit Irish budget airline, is cancelling up to 400 flights in Spain, as well as many others in the rest of Europe, following a cabin-crew strike in Spain, Belgium and Portugal. It is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday (July 25th and 26th), and a spokesperson said that, each day, up to 200 of the 830-plus flights would be grounded. There will also be up to 50 cancellations of Ryanair’s 180-plus daily flights, to and from Portugal, and up to 50 more of its 160 daily flights, to or from Belgium. The airline has contacted around 50,000 passengers planning to travel to or from Belgium, Portugal and Spain on each of those days, to give them a sevenday notice about their flight cancellation. Customers may choose to travel on another flight, or request a full refund. But Ryanair said, in a release, that it had added extra staff to deal with the re-accommodations and refunds. Marketing director Kenny
Jacobs said: “Ryanair sincerely apologises to our customers for these disruptions, which we have done our utmost to avoid.” The company calculates that 88% of customers in Europe will not be affected, although Spanish unions behind the stoppage have their doubts about this figure. The striking employees in Spain have Irish work contracts, and, as such, are not subject to the labour regulations of Spain. This had cast a cloud over whether staff would cover the minimum level of services required under Spanish law. And, because this is an unprecedented situation in Spain, legal State services have been asked to produce
a report to determine whether Spanish legislation, covering minimum services during strikes such as this one, is applicable. Travellers are facing even more uncertainty, because Ryanair’s Irish pilots have announced plans to hold two more 24-hour strikes: today (Friday) and on Tuesday. The Irish Airline Pilots’ Association union (IALPA) confirmed that the stoppages would both begin at 1am. The Association said in a statement: “The union and management found some common ground, in talks on the proposal that a joint working-group could help the parties agree on a fair and transparent method
to govern base transfer arrangements, and related matters. “But they failed to reach agreement on the terms of reference for such a group. On a number of occasions in recent months, there have been suggestions that third-party facilitation could assist in reaching consensus on issues of disagreement. “It is, therefore, regrettable that Ryanair management has, so far, rejected the suggestion of third-party assistance.” Meanwhile, travel chaos is also anticipated at airports throughout Spain next month, because more than 60,000 baggage-handlers and other airport staff are to strike on unconfirmed dates. It comes in the wake of more than two years of failed talks over salaries, working hours, breaks, overtime and professional growth, said a CCOO union statement. Labour mediation agency SIMA has been asked to act as a peacemaker, in an attempt to avoid the strikes.
RELIGIOUS education will be stripped of its academic value under Isabel Celaa, Spain’s new education chief. The Minister said RE would still be an option as a classroom subject, but it would no longer influence school grades, or count towards a scholarship. The measure dates back to the education law (LOE), passed by the PSOE in 2006, and substituted by the LOMCE in 2015, which gave religion greater academic clout, and led to a 38% rise in students taking the subject in the hope of an easy pass. Meanwhile, a new subject has been added to the curricula: Civil and Ethical Values, similar to the old Education for Citizenship course which existed under the LOE.

More druggies than alkies now, and more for rehab? COCAINE is taking over from alcohol as the addiction most people in Spain seek help in quitting, and that could, possibly, negate the Podemus party’s call for cannabis to made legal. The Observatorio Proyecto Hombre report suggests that the number of cocaine addicts entering rehab (34.3%) now exceeds the number of alcoholics soliciting treatment (31%) for the first time in the organisation’s history. Yet just five years ago, alcoholics represented 41% of rehab patients. There are multiple reasons to explain the rise of cocaine addiction, including the increase in production of the white powder throughout Europe, the end of the financial crisis and the normalisation of its consumption in daily life. The study also smashes the long-held theory that cocaine is a high-class drug. “Cocaine is consumed by all social classes,” said Felix Rueda, of Proyecto Hombre.
Stark warning for the mobile-phone drivers
“People who go into rehab could be a member of your own family, or even the next-door neighbour.” According to the latest profile studies, most cocaine-users are men in their mid-30s, with stable family backgrounds, a basic education and a job. They work in areas such as the food and beverage industry, surveillance and special care, along with jobs which demand long hours, and a high level of concen-
tration. Unlike other addictive substances, such as alcohol or heroin, cocaine addiction is not accompanied by instability in personal life. That reinforces the idea of its use as a party drug, rather than a way out. And this could explain why almost 50% of addicts are aged under 30. The “normal” appearance of users makes it more difficult to detect their addiction and help them.
SPAIN’S new traffic chief has revealed that drivers, including those in Tenerife, caught using a mobile phone while at the wheel, will face heavier fines. Pere Navarro, recentlyappointed head of the DGT national traffic authority, said motorists would also receive more than the current three penalty points on their licences if discovered chatting or texting. Distractions are the main cause of serious accidents on Spanish roads, ahead of drink-driving and speeding, he added. “We’re going to update the
point-based licence. After 12 years, my own roadmap says we need to stop, take stock and use our accumulated experience to update and review the system,” Navarro told a press conference. Initially, he was in charge of the DGT between 2004 and 2012, and he has again been handed the job by Spain’s new, socialist government. “When it comes to road safety, our indicator is very visible: the death toll,” he added. The figures set our path for us, and we need to do something about secondary roads. “We also need to do something about motorcycles; we need to do something about cities, about distractions, and about pedestrians.”

New 1m-euro sub’s too big for its berth
Amazon strikers
attacked
PROBLEMS surrounding Spain’s state - of-the -art Navy submarine have resurfaced, following issues with its weight and size. The S-80 plus sub, which is costing more than double the half-billion-euro price tag anticipated, weighs 800 tons, and four have been ordered. The vessel has already faced buoyancy problems, forcing the Navantia shipyard to add on 10 metres to
resolve the problem. The news comes after shipyard officials discovered that the 81-metre sub was too big to fit inside its naval base, in Cartagena, southeast Spain. The docking area can accommodate vessels up to 78m only. Industry experts say that if the problems can be resolved, it can be a highlycompetitive sub, adding: “But if things continue to go wrong, the whole project will fail.” Incidentally, German and Israeli submarines cost between 400-600m euros!
Sir Cliff wins damages SIR CLIFF Richard has been awarded a total of £210,000 damages from the British Broadcasting Corporation, which transmitted a live police raid on his home in 2014.
ARRESTS have been made by police during this week’s threeday walk-out, by online retailer Amazon’s Madrid staff.
They have been striking over working conditions and pay, but onlookers witnessed tensions escalate, after police in riot gear charged the strikers because they were blocking traffic.
The cops insist that the protests were “peaceful”, but one “spectator”, Alberto Rodriguez, documented the scenes, with a video of police in riot gear, detaining and leading away an alleged worker.
The 77-year-old singer had sought damages for alleged invasion of privacy, financial loss and damage to his reputation. The judge ruled that the BBC infringed Sir Cliff ’s privacy rights without justification. The singer has already received £400,000 in damages from South Yorkshire police, who tipped-off the Corporation about the raid, which was filmed from a
helicopter and broadcast live. Costs and a possible appeal will be discussed at another hearing next week. An emotional Sir Cliff left the court with friends Gloria Hunniford and Paul Gambaccini.

DEFENCE lawyers for Catalan separatist leaders, who are in pre-trial custody in Spain, should, this week, have demanded their clients’ release before the Supreme Court, which is handling the case. This move will follow a recent decision by a German court to extradite former Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont to Spain, on the charge of misusing public funds, for which the Spanish authorities have filed against him. But the court avoided extraditing him for the crime of rebellion, which means he can be tried on the former charge only, once back in Spain. At a joint press conference in Barcelona, the defence lawyers said that their clients’ legal situation had changed, and not just because of the German judges’ decision. Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena, who has been in charge of the investigation into rebellion, sedition and misuse of public funds by separatist leaders, last Tuesday ended the investigative part of the proceedings. The judges will now send the case to trial judges. Eighteen people will sit in the dock at hearings, which are expected to begin in late 2018 or early 2019. But before ending the investigation, which is the biggest handled by the Supreme Court since the failed coup of 23rd February, 1981, Llarena suspended the six Catalan deputies involved in the case from public office, including Puigdemont and Catalan Republican Left (ERC) leader Oriol Junqueras. “There is no probability at all that the case will end in a rebellion conviction,” said Andreu Van Den Eynde, who is defending members of ERC, and is asking the public prosecution to agree to his clients’ release, ahead of the trial.
Supreme Court could open door for Puigdemont
The jailed individuals are accused of heading a secessionist movement in Catalonia, which included an illegal referendum, as well as a unilateral independence declaration last October. Jordi Pina, defence lawyer for members of the Democratic Party of Catalonia (PDeCAT), said there was still a possibility that the Supreme Court would reject the extradition, and maintain the rebellion charges against eight defendants. But, he added: “It is not up to the Supreme Court to make political strategy, and it would be difficult to explain to millions of citizens that there are people facing 25 years in prison, while another one is facing only five because he has not committed rebellion.” The Spanish Supreme Court is divided over the issue, with some members saying it should reject Puigdemont’s extradition if the former Catalan leader cannot be tried for rebellion.
Spanish judges could also turn to the EU Court of Justice and argue that the German judiciary did not implement the European arrest warrant properly. Prosecutors believe German judges have overstepped their powers by weighing in on the facts of the case, when their role should have been “limited to practical and administrative support”. A third option would be to accept Puigdemont’s extradition, and try him, exclusively, for misuse of public funds. But sources familiar with the situation said this was the least likely of all choices, because Puigdemont could, ultimately, walk free…and even run for the regional premiership again! If Puigdemont’s extradition were to be rejected, the Spanish judiciary would still maintain the national arrest warrant against him, ensuring that he could not return to Spain until the statute of limitations on rebellion expires, which, in this case, is 20 years. Defence lawyers for the
Catalan separatist leaders said there would be no plea bargains with prosecutors. “There is no possible negotiation,” said one of the lawyers, Javier Melero. “The fines would leave our clients ruined for life.” The Catalan Government, whose leader Quim Torra was hand-picked by Puigdemont, has asked the Spanish executive to “use the tools at its disposal” to ensure the separatist leaders’ release. There has been a partial thaw in Madrid-Barcelona relations, ever since the new Socialist Party (PSOE) administration of Pedro Sánchez took over from the Popular Party some seven weeks ago, in the wake of a successful no-confidence motion inside Spanish Congress. Sánchez and Torra met in Madrid on 9th July, in a symbolic gesture that marked the first time in two years that Catalan and Spanish Government leaders had met face to face at La Moncloa, the prime ministerial palace.
Spain forced to accept more asylum-seekers SPAIN has been criticised heavily for not accepting enough asylumseekers, according to its EU commitment.
The Spanish Supreme Court has found the state guilty of not meeting an EU quota, “more than six months after
the deadline expired”. Spain had promised the European Council it would accept 19,500 asylum seekers from Greece and Italy, between 20152017. However, the country took in just 2,500 people, which was under 13%. Yet, in 2015, EU member states agreed to accept and share the 160,000 asylum-seekers, who
had arrived over a twoyear period in Greece and Italy. The court, which ruled that the country must “continue the procedure” of taking in more refugees, did not impose a penalty. In fact, it accepted that the task had been difficult, through insufficient coordination between EU member states.

Wolfpack freedom sparks PM’s new sex-law reform
SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has told law-makers that he plans to table new sexual-assault laws, clarifying what classes as rape. His announcement comes as a court in Navarra ruled that the five members of the self-styled La Manada (Wolfpack in English) gang could remain free on bail. They were jailed after the court found them guilty of sexual assault, but the judge acquitted them of raping an 18-year-old woman during the San Fermin Bull Run Festival in Pamplona, two years ago. The left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) Prime Minister said his proposed laws would create a “Yes means Yes” standard for consenting to sex. A similar law came into force in Sweden last month, classing sex without explicit consent as rape. “To be clear, ladies and gentlemen, if they say No, it means No, and if they don’t say Yes, it means No,” Sanchez told deputies in Spain’s Parliament. Carmen Calvo, Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister and Equality Minister, first presented the proposals last week. She said they would guarantee the “autonomy, freedom and respect” to people, where sex was concerned. Prosecutors, who are seeking to convict defendants in rape cases in Spain, now have to prove that violence or intimidation was involved. They were unable to do so in the La Manada case, meaning the crime was downgraded to sexual assault, which carries smaller penalties. The announcement comes as the Second Section of the Court of Navarra ruled to uphold the bailing of the five men, jailed in connection with the La Manada case. The ruling follows an appeal against their release from prosecutors, the victim, the Navarra Region and Pamplona Council. The five men are currently appealing against their sentences. The bailing of the men sparked protests in cities across Spain. And demonstrators also took to the streets after the announcement that they had been acquitted of rape, and, instead, found guilty of sexual assault, during the original trial.

Tourist dies in shock tsunami A GERMAN tourist died after being swept away by a giant wave during a shock, mini-tsunami in the Balearic islands of Mallorca and Menorca last Monday.
The man was on holiday with his wife and eightyear-old twins, who were all together when the tragic accident occurred in the Santanyi area of Mallorca, where they were staying. The family were walking down a flight of stairs leading to the sea at around 3.30pm, when the giant wave struck. The children, a boy and a girl, also fell into the water at the same time, but the mother managed to rescue the little girl seconds later. However, as the son and the father were being dragged away by a strong tide, the mother screamed for help. Local residents rushed to the sea with a canoe and rescued the boy, and, shortly afterwards, the father. But, sadly, he was unconscious, and all attempts to resuscitate
him failed, paramedics pronouncing him dead at the scene. His wife, who was in shock, is receiving psychological treatment. An autopsy will be carried out to determine whether his death was caused by drowning, or because his body was smashed against a rock. Earlier the same day, a wave measuring 5ft high hit tourist beaches at Ciutadella, on the west coast of Menorca. It was identified as a meteotsunami, caused by disturbances in air pressure
at sea, and generated when rapid changes in barometric pressure cause bodies of water to displace. There were no reports of any injuries, because it hit early before people had filled the beaches. However, it did cause havoc, by sweeping away boats, damaging beach-bars and leaving roads flooded. Local boat-owners were filmed trying to protect their vessels, but the wave’s fierce strength broke the ropes of a historic sailing boat, used by the Majorca Island Council.
Spain is sparkling with wind power! SPAIN’S progress to a low-carbon economy has taken a huge step forward, with nearly half of all power being supplied by renewable energy. Data from Red Electrica de Espana shows that 45.8% of electricity came from renewable resources. The data, taken from January and June, shows an 8.5% increase in renewable production.
At the end of 2015, Spain was the world’s fifthbiggest producer of wind power, with Cadiz, home to Acciona Energía, the world’s largest wind-farm builder and developer. A Government-backed “Electricity Act”, and heavy investment in wind turbines, have helped Spain benefit from renewable power. Heavy rainfall in mainland Spain earlier this year helped hydro production reach over 20,000 GWH (Gigawatt per Hour),
which is equal to 16.9% of power. Over the past decade, Spain has increased its renewable power by 53%, with companies looking to invest a further 30,500 megawatts of new capacity to support the integration of renewables even more. A strong, renewable energy sector will strengthen Spain’s position within the Paris Accord Agreement: a scheme by most nations to combat climate change. The success of Spain’s wind-power industry has seen electricity supplied to 18.4% of the country, while employment figures by this booming sector has attracted 22,468 jobs to the country. Worldwide, Spain is now ranked the fifth country in installed windpower, and the fourth in wind-turbine exporting.
Three youngsters die after falling from same walkway A TEENAGE boy, on his first-ever holiday with friends, has become the third young Brit to die this year after falling from the same Mallorcan apartment block in Magaluf. Thomas Channon, 18, tumbled 70ft from what has been labelled a “walkway of death”, after travelling with his school pals to celebrate finishing their A-Level exams. Spanish police believe that Thomas fell from a balcony, but friends say he fell from the walkway after stumbling over a wall. His body was found in the gardens of the Eden Roc holiday apartment block by a gardener, last Thursday. His father, John, a 67-yearold business consultant, and midwife mum Ceri, 49, are understood to have brought him home to Rhoose, near Barry, in South Wales. Parents of his heartbroken friends, who have now collected their own sons from Mallorca, are demanding action over the low-walled walkway. One mother, who asked not to be named, said: “We went to where Thomas fell and the wall is way too low. “Something has to happen now. It shouldn’t take all these kids dying to make sure proper precautions are in place. “The caretaker who found him was crying when he told us, ‘this cannot go on, something has to change’. “But the hotel has done nothing to tape off the walkway or put warnings in place. Three kids dying here this year is just unbelievable. We’re furious. There are kids going out tonight, but nothing is being done.” She confirmed that Thomas had wandered away from his group of school friends at around 4am on Thursday. By mistake, he had entered the Eden Roc apartment building, next door to the Hotel Florida, where he was staying. Police believe he may have got lost as he made his way home. Thomas is the third British holiday-maker to have died in what appears to have been a balcony fall in the Eden Roc block this year. In April, 19-year-old Scottish bar-worker Natalie Cormack, from West Kilbride, fell to her death there. She had been trying to edge her way along an
overhang after discovering she didn’t have keys to get in. Two months later, Tom Hughes, 20, also died after falling some 65ft from the apartment block. There have been a number of other balcony falls in Magaluf this year, and authorities have issued warnings about holidaymakers taking risks on hotel balconies abroad. But another British holiday-maker survived after plummeting seven floors from his balcony at a Palma hotel in Mallorca’s capital, landing on a car bonnet, following a row with his girlfriend at the Hotel Porto Playa, Porto Cristo, in the early hours. The unnamed victim, believed to be in his early 30s, suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Palma’s Son Espases Hospital for treatment. Medics said it was a “miracle” he survived, after a parked BMW car broke his fall and almost certainly saved his life (pictured below). Police are probing the accident, amid claims that the hotel had “problems” with the couple 24 hours earlier. The incident happened days after a British woman, 41, was seriously hurt after falling from a second-floor apartment in San Antonio, Ibiza. She was admitted to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario private hospital, but no further details have been released.

Phoney phone man’s number is up at last! A MAN from Gran Canaria, who posed as a legitimate business man, offering full work contracts in exchange for topmodel mobile phones, has been arrested by the Guardia Civil. Officers said they began investigating him last month, after receiving three, similar, official complaints. The people were approached through a popular website, which was often visited by thousands of people, in the hope of finding employment. They were all offered a contracted position by the fraudster, who
appeared to be a reputable business man. And all they had to do, at first, was hand over a top-model smartphone, But once the phones were out of the victims’ hands, they never heard from the conman again. However, the investigation proved difficult for the officers, be-
cause of the different names and numbers. But their persistence paid off and an arrest was made, The 27-year-old fraudster was identified as a man with a police record for similar crimes. He has now been charged with fraud on three accounts, and the case is in the hands of the courts.

The Five Billion Pound Super Sewer
The Voice Kids Live Final Sat 21st July, ITV1, 20.00
After an incredible week of competition, tonight sees the grand final of The Voice Kids 2018. The decisions have been taken out of the coaches hands as six kids go head-to-head to convince the public they deserve the title of The Voice Kids champion. Only one singer can be victorious and walk away with £30,000 towards their musical education and a family holiday to Disneyland Paris. Tune in for what promises to be an emotional night and a fitting end to a magical week.
Tuesday 24th July, BBC2, 21.00 In this second episode, construction begins in the heart of London. Two key connection shafts along the Thames are to be dug to enable the super sewer to be built. In Battersea, a challenging construction technique called ‘diaphragm-walling’ is being employed to build a massive 90-metre deep shaft. But these are the deepest tunnels ever dug in London and with challenging rocks that haven’t been disturbed for 52 million years, the digger struggles to cut through the ground. At Tower Bridge, engineers need to build a cofferdam structure out into the Thames to make enough space for the second shaft. Reclaiming 8,000 square metres of land in central London is a noisy operation and not all of the neighbours are happy. Finally, with tunnelling about to begin, engineers need to solve the problem of where to put up to 1.5 million tonnes of earth and rubble that excavation will create. They plan to take the earth by barges out of London to Tilbury, but the current dock is too small to deal with the vast amount of dirt that will be excavated. It’s decided to build a new dock by positioning a 70-tonne bridge on steel pillars and installing a massive platform alongside, which will allow up to 10 barges a day to dock and take the dirt out of the city.

Denise Lewis returns to New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton to retrace the footsteps of her grandmother, who worked as a nurse for 40 years after arriving from Jamaica in the 1950s. Meeting current and former NHS staff, Denise sees how the NHS has changed through the years - and what her grandmother’s experiences would have been as a Jamaican nurse in 1950s and 1960s Britain. Denise explores what has changed at the hospital since her Nan worked there, getting a glimpse into their brand new Heart And Lung Centre and witnessesing the cutting-edge surgery that the NHS provides. But there is another, even more personal reason that Denise wants to return: for the very same hospital her Nan worked in is the one which treated and cared for her before she passed away in 2005 from breast cancer. Denise visits the ward her Nan was treated in, and hears stories of life in the NHS today from patients and staff there. The number of people surviving some of the most common types of cancer has at least doubled since the foundation of National Health Service 70 years ago. Denise meets the NHS doctors to hear why that is, and meets the patients undergoing groundbreaking anti-cancer treatments.

Stonehearst Asylum Channel 4, 23:05
Ben Kingsley and Kate Beckinsale star in director Brad Anderson’s adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s Gothic-thriller Eliza Graves. The year is 1899, and medical school graduate Edward Newgate is the newest clinical recruit at Stonehearst: a mental asylum for the privileged and wealthy. He’s keen to gain as much experience as possible, but he becomes increasingly concerned as the techniques of his superior, Dr Silas Lamb, get increasingly unconventional. Despite growing apprehension about the legitimacy of the establishment and the malpractice taking place within its walls, Edward stays at Stonehearst, where he becomes infatuated with a captivating and ostensibly sane patient called Eliza. But Stonehearst’s secrets are far darker than Edward initially feared...

This week Alan heads to Fareham near Southampton to surprise Betty Hicks (90), a fearless life-long volunteer and fundraiser. Despite her years, Betty’s last epic fund-raising adventure saw her abseil down Southampton Harbour’s Spinnaker Tower in 2016. Standing at 170 meters, this incredible feat was to raise money for a condition known as macular degeneration - a gradual loss of sight prevalent in the elderly. Betty also suffers from the condition, so her act of derring-do staggers Alan and the team. Despite her get up and go, Betty’s garden is a green-free concrete box - with so many levels and trip hazards - that it’s off limits to the sightimpaired dare-devil, so the team set about transforming it into a safe, and sensory haven for her. Inspired by Betty’s love of vivid colour - which her failing sight can still appreciate - the team create an elegant formal garden that’s brimming with the brightest of shades. Alan shares some topiary tricks of the trade and along with the team astound Betty with the transformation.

France 2 - 2 Premier Properties Tenerife Sur SL
JUST like France, Premier Properties Tenerife Sur SL came out as winners of this year’s World Cup Competition, run by Oasis Fm and the Canarian Weekly. This is the second time that Judith, Paul and the gang have drawn the winning team, because they won the competition with Germany in 2014.
Huge congratulations go to Premier Properties Tenerife Sur SL on winning this year’s competition. They are now looking forward to the Rugby World Cup and the Euros! Premier Properties Tenerife Sur SL is one of the leading estate agents Tenerife has to offer. Established for 15 years, they are always focusing on all types of properties to buy and sell in the South of Tenerife. The office is located in the heart of Los Cristianos, next door to Pandora, in front of the Church square, and next to the entrance to the Hotel Reveron.
Premier Properties Tenerife Sur SL offer their clients total peace of mind because they are members of the Tenerife South Real Estate Association (TSREA). The Association comprises a select group of elite agents, offering a guarantee which contributes to keeping the prestige of our profession. Buyers and sellers are secure in the knowledge that all real-estate transactions, made by the Association’s Real Estate Agents, will be performed with maximum security and transparency. Go and meet their proactive, friendly, international team,
all of whom are experts in their field. Owners Judith and Paul, together with Conny, Damian, Miriam and Miryoku, will guide you every step of the way through the buying and/or selling process, including all your conveyancing works, too! They are always looking for properties in the South
of Tenerife, and urgently need yours, to add to their portfolio. Thousands of people pass and look at their office everyday, so their volume of sales is very high. Pop in and talk with them about your property, which may be sitting at the bottom of another agent’s listing!
How you can become a self-defence expert KRAV Maga Tenerife’s one-week Summer Camp, which ended last Saturday, proved hugely successful, culminating in the island’s first international selfdefence seminar. This particular self-defence method, used by the Israeli Special Forces and Secret Service, is now being adopted worldwide by most of the elite, police and military bodies. It is created from the most effective styles of fighting, and is a brutal, but effective, self-defence system. Krav Maga Tenerife is run by instructors Martin Luna and Steve Coster, and their seminar was sponsored by Adeje Council.
Martin is the technical director of IPSA (International Police & Security Association). The two men have studied martial arts all their lives, and their small school is beginning to gather international recognition. They teach seminars regularly, throughout Europe, to police and military units, and have direct-delegate schools from mainland Spain, Italy, Portugal, France, Germany, and, from this year, South America. The increased global terrorism threats have led to more government agencies turning to Krav Maga to train their personnel.
In fact, regular courses are now held for members of France’s Gendarmerie, Italy’s Carabinieri, and, of course, Spain’s own Guardia Civil. This summer boot camp attracted more than over 40 students to Tenerife, for a week of intensive training, covering all aspects of violent attacks. The curriculum covered basic street attacks, such as defence from punches and kicks, then moving on to grabs and strangles, and finishing off by dealing with attacks from various weapons, such as knives and guns. The students were also put through their paces
every morning at 7.30, with a military beach boot camp, conducted by Steve, because a high level of fitness is imperative for security forces. The end of the week brought the big event… Tenerife’s first-ever international Krav Maga Seminar, which attracted more than 120 people to Tenerife Top Training, in La Caleta. The event was open to all, regardless of their level of martial-arts experience. The programme covered a variety of subjects, such as women’s self-defence against, say, attempted rape situations and domestic violence. It then moved on to
cover police security, dealing with terrorist attacks and disarming weapon-carrying people, as well as control and restraint techniques. The Seminar was conducted by Martin and Steve, who taught Krav Maga, supported by Yusef Kaddur (three-time World Jiu Jitsu Champion), Pietro Pedroni and Gustavo Manhas (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructors), the latter three also teaching groundfighting techniques. Krav Maga Tenerife runs classes every day throughout the week. For more information, contact Steve Coster (English) or Martin Luna (Espanol).

20th July - 26th July 2018
MOVING to Tenerife can mean making lots of adjustments to your lifestyle, often because many properties are more openplan than back in the UK.
In the UK, it’s common to have a separate dining area, kitchen and lounge, partly so that it’s easy to keep them warm. In Tenerife, you may find they are all in the same room! Equally, some properties are studios which may have a separate sleeping area, but have seating,
By Val Sainsbury THERE’S nothing quite as synonymous with summer as the beach, and research finds that spending time by the ocean is pretty good for your wellbeing. In fact, those who live by the coast report better physical and mental health than those who don’t. And, in a study published in the Journal of Coastal Zone Management, participants who live in homes with ocean views report feeling calmer than those without them. So, it makes sense that Hawaii has earned the ranking of the happiest state in the US, by the annual Gallup poll, six times since 2008. When it comes to why, exactly, the beach gets you feeling all Zen, there are a few factors at play, says US clinical psychologist Richard Shuster. “The colour blue has been found by an over-
kitchen and sleeping zones, all sharing the same room. There are several reasons for the openplan design approach. Firstly, it promotes better airflow throughout the property in warmer climates, and, without walls being in the way, you can get more accommodation inside less space. So what can you do to separate certain areas, without making structural changes, or incurring a lot of expense? Firstly, you can visually separate certain areas, by clustering furniture in groups. In the lounge area, for example, a bright rug between the sofa and chairs will draw the eye, and make it into a “zone” gathered around the rug. Equally, the dining table and chairs in

To stay in the zone, while you’re at the beach, say goodbye to social media - for now! “The best way to exercise mindfulness is to close your eyes and listen to the ocean waves rolling in and out,” says Shuster. “If you’re getting alerts from your phone, that’s going to detract from the experience.” Plus, there’s that constant ebbing and flowing you hear, as you lie on your towel under an umbrella. “It kind of destimulates our brains,” adds Shuster. “The noises, coupled with the visuals, activate your parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for slowing us down and allowing us to relax and feel more engaged.” The smell of the ocean breeze also contributes

These oxygen atoms have an extra electron, and occur in places like waterfalls and the ocean. Negative-ion therapy could be used to treat symptoms of seasonal affective disorder. Finally, the simple act of touching the sand makes you feel all fuzzy. “The physical sensation of putting your feet in warm sand causes people to relax,” says Shuster.
a physical separation, there are also lots of options. A curtain track fitted to the ceiling, with a curtain tied back during the day, but closed at night, would create a separate sleeping area
in a studio apartment, for example. You could use the same feature, or even floor-to-ceiling vertical blinds, to separate a kitchen from the living room at night (for when you haven’t

washed the dishes, perhaps!). An open bookcase can also be used to divide one area from another, and has the added advantage of providing you with a great place to display a variety of books, ornaments and plants. If your front door opens directly into your lounge, this bookcase idea is also a great way of creating a kind of hall area. Basically, any furniture can be used to create a barrier between certain areas, but you will need to ensure that the unfinished backs of cupboards are not exposed for all to see! For ideas on how to divide your living areas, ask for some design advice from Deco Nuevo, who give free quotes, without obligation, in your home.

Las Galletas Lions THE Arona Las Galletas Costa del Silencio Lions Club continues to strengthen its ties with the Hermanos Franciscanos de Cruz Blanca (or White Fathers as they are more commonly known) in Las Chafiras. And that’s apart from supporting them with its monthly purchase of muchneeded toiletries, and also by contributing towards their “bus fund”. The White Fathers desperately need an adapted bus, to transport their full-time boarders to various hospital appointments, and to pick-up and drop-off those who use the centre on dayrelease. They are still quite a bit short of their target, so the Lions’ 2,500-euro cheque was gratefully received. Meet Sprite!
SPRITE is a medium-sized chap who's about a year old. He's a beautiful champagne-and-white colour, and has lovely, green eyes. He was found by the police, wandering the strees of El Roque, all alone and scared. At first, he was terrified. But, slowly, we began to gain his trust, and, once he feels comfortable with someone, he is very affectionate. Because of his shy attitude, he requires an adopter who has the necessary patience. He is very energetic, and loves running around, playing with toys and even going swimming when he has the chance. Sprite can be quite particular about which dogs he gets along with. For this reason, we recommend he goes to a home with no other dogs. He has been at the refuge since January, and it is time for him to find a safe and warm home with a loving family, where he can start all over again. If you would like to meet Sprite, contact us on 6676 38468, or come up to the refuge any day. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-and-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm? Alternatively, you
can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@ k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker, K9 Tenerife and, not forgetting, K9 Tenerife Cats. Also, to see daily photos of the walks that take place at K9, like the facebook page Voluntarios del Refugio K9. Ways you can help If you wish to support K9 animal refuge, and contribute towards the safe rescue and adoption of abandoned dogs and cats, we would be very appreciative. You can buy our merchandise (T-shirts, vests, key rings, wristbands and more) at K9, sponsor one of our dogs via our website, and donate money via our website, or cash at our refuge. We also welcome donations of food and other items. Charity shop Our charity shop in Alcala Plaza is always looking for new items to sell. If you have any unwanted clothes, shoes, books or bric-a-brac, please pop them into our shop, or to K9. We welcome all kinds of items, all proceeds going towards helping the dogs. The shop is open from 10am2pm, Monday to Saturday. Pop in, or call them on 646 561 035. Collections can also be arranged, using this number.

Heartworm warning!
WITH the weather warming up, it's extra important to care for your dog, because a single bite from an infected mosquito can lead to heartworm, resulting in a very slow and painful death. We can never stress enough the importance of treating your dog, monthly, with special drops on his or her neck, or with a tablet or yearly injection to prevent this happening. Over 60% of the dogs that arrive at the refuge test positive for heartworm. The treatment is very costly and uncomfortable, but it is of the utmost importance, to prevent pain and suffering to the animals in our care. We guarantee that all our dogs have the necessary injections, microchips, passports and a clean bill of health before they are put up for adoption. We do not charge for adoptions, but

Pussies galore! WE have lots and lots of adorable kittens available, all waiting to be adopted so that they can start their new lives in special, loving homes! Would you like to give a furry friend the love and safety it deserves? As well as an abundance of kittens, we have several adult cats who would love to be snuggled up on someone's sofa today. There are males and females, ranging from 18 months to seven years. All are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested, please contact us via Facebook or our website www.cats-welfare-tenerife. com. Alternatively, ring/ WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 6712 82773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006. We are sure there is a purrfect one for you! All cats are adopted with a week's trial in your home. Not to be missed! During the month of July, we have a fabulous offer the reduction in the cost of sterilising your cat or dog. Our vets at Don Perro in Las Chafiras, Vet Express behind Grand Sur, and Yaiza
Vet in Los Cristianos, are all taking part. For male cats, the cost is only 35 euros, and 65 euros for a female. The prices for dogs vary, depending on weight, breed and size. Please contact us for further details, and for your unique, promotion code. You pay the vets directly. This offer may not be repeated, so let's be responsible pet owners, and sterilise our pets. Microchipping We are, yet again, stressing to cat owners the importance of having your cat/kitten microchipped. It's a legal requirement here, and, if your cat is not chipped, it is classed as a stray. Therefore, if someone takes it and chips it, they become the legal owner. We constantly receive messages of lost cats who are not microchipped, yet the owners are always so devastated. A kitten can be chipped from as young as 8 weeks of age. Shop volunteers needed Would you like to join our friendly team of volunteers at the Cats Welfare charity shop in San Blas, Golf Del Sur? You will always work in pairs, and the shifts
are 10am-2pm and 2-6pm. The shop has air-con, tea and coffee, a cold-water machine and a well-stocked fridge full of goodies, plus there are staff perks! Please phone or WhatsApp Elaine Root on 6025 70059. Fostering We are looking for volunteers with experience in bottle feeding kittens! Every day, messages reach us of small kittens being found, and we need more foster carers who are willing to help very small kittens with their start in this world. If you are interested, please send us a message for further details. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, old newspapers, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/ condition items for sale in our shop. They can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10-6pm. If you don't have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 6365 90557, and he will arrange collection from you.

French whining about deception IT’S known as francisé wine, and many consumers drink it at bistros in the belief that it is a house wine, or buy it in nearby supermarkets, thinking it’s an inexpensive, local product. In reality, it is Spanish wine that seems French because of the use of deliberately-misleading labels or fraudulent practices. The fraud department at France’s Economy Ministry recently unveiled the results of a two-year investigation that could lead to criminal penalties for the companies and individuals involved in the scheme, all of whom are French. The tension was reminiscent of the iconic protests by French farmers in the 1980s. Millions of bottles of Spanish rosé wine were being sold at French establishments under the label “Vin de France”, or with an Indication Géographique Protégée, a quality designation
for products whose reputation is linked to a specific location. In some cases, the real origin of the wine was difficult to ascertain because of the small print located on the back label, whereas the front label featured symbols typically associated with France, such as a fleur-de-lys or a castle. In some cases, the labels said “bottled in France”, which does not mean it is a product of France. The individuals who engaged in these practices could face prison terms of up to two years and 300,000-euro fines, depending on the company’s earnings from this source.
The cases have been referred to the courts. The consumer, competition and fraud department, known as DGCCRF by its French acronym, also found that Spanish wines were being displayed in the “Vins de Pays” or localwines section at French supermarkets. Meanwhile, some restaurants and cafés listed Spanish wines on their menu as house wines or local harvests. Alexandre Chevallier, an official at the DGCCRF, said that the case involves over 70,000 hectolitres of wine, the equivalent of 10 million bottles. Spain is the global
leader in wine exports, with nearly five million hectolitres sold, annually, to France. The alleged fraud affects just 1.4% of that amount. “It is a very limited portion of imports. What the investigation concluded is that rules are mostly being respected, and the labelling is correct,” said Chevallier. The case of the francisé wine takes on political overtones in a country where national identity is strongly associated with local growers and terroir products. “The fraud hurts France and Spain, and also French consumers,” said Guilhem Vigroux, president of the FDSEA union in the Hérault département, in southern France. “And then there is the issue of unfair competition within the EU. We don’t have the same weapons. If things continue this way, our production will be destabilised, as witnessed with fruits and vegetables.”
The investigation was launched following a complaint by French producers who were seeing Spanish wine flooding the market. One hectolitre of French rosé has been twice as expensive as its Spanish counterpart, in recent years. “Wines from Spain are being offered at very low prices. We make a profit starting at 78 euros per hectolitre, while, in Spain, the threshold is 30 euros per hectolitre. It is unsustainable,” said Frédéric Rouanet, president of the winemakers’ union of the Aude département in southern France. The protests by French farmers in the 1980s also involved Spanish fruit and vegetables starting to enter the common market, sometimes ending up squashed on the road. In 2016 and 2017, trucks carrying Spanish wine into France were attacked, and bottles were destroyed in supermarkets.

AS the name suggests, the Chill Out restaurant, situated on the beach front of Los Cristianos, just near the tunnel on the Las Vistas side, is the ideal place to relax, whether you are coming off the beach, or ready for your night out.
As we were seated, we both noticed the fantastic idea of a waiter call-system which enables you to request a waiter for service, or just your bill. It is ideal for busy periods, cutting down on waiting times. We didn’t need to use the buttons, because the waiters were attentive, professional, yet friendly, and surprisingly chilled-out; the name must rub off on them, too. They were also happy to advise on any food items, and wine or cocktail menus. Jose, the manager, went through some of the specials which were not on the menu, showing photos and explaining the different dishes. Normally, I don’t like restaurants with pictures, as they either look a mess, or the food comes out looking nothing like the photo shown. This definitely turned out not to be the case here. Choosing was extremely difficult, as Chill Out has some very different dishes, such as Fillet Steak with King Prawn and Whisky Sauce, and Cod Fillet and Warm Mango Salsa. There is also a great tapas menu, and much more. In a strange way it was torture, seeing all the dishes coming out for other diners, as they all looked amazing. But, moments later, our starters arrived. We had chosen a duck salad with a

We also ordered Bang Bang Prawns, which were crispycrumbed king prawns with chili mayonnaise. They made a good crunching sound as we bit into them, and the chili mayo had just the right amount of kick. Being extremely greedy, and not realising how big the portions were going to be, we also ordered bruschetta with jamon Serrano, rocket and cheese; a lovely, freshtasting starter, with a good hint of garlic. After the demolition of all three starters, the plates were swiftly removed to make way for our main course. First up for our delectation was the fillet steak, caramelised with
mustard and brown sugar, and served with a mustard sauce. We opted for rare, because it can show off the tenderness and quality of the meat. Cooked to perfection, this large piece of fillet was seared perfectly on the outside, but it melted in the mouth because it was so tender on the inside.
It was served with a sweetand-creamy mustard sauce, and accompanied by crunchy, fresh, stir-fried veg and garlicky sautĂŠed potatoes. We were given a steak knife, but it was not required for the task in hand. Next was pure theatre, as our sea bass arrived at the table flaming and covered in a mountain of sea salt. Watching the waiter skilfully skin, fillet and present the fish was incredible. When we tasted it, we realised that the salt crust enables the skin to be removed, leaving a beautifully-soft, moist piece of fish with the flavour locked in, as it had steamed in its own juices. It was also served with a vegetable stir fry, as well as Canarian potatoes and traditional, red-andgreen, mojo sauces. A break was required before we were invited to look at the dessert trolley. Filled with inviting, home-
made puddings, it was too tempting not to try something. We shared a Dime Bar cake, which was just how you would imagine it to be sweet, caramelly and gooey. Our dinner was washed down with an excellent bottle of Rioja, and we finished with a goldfish-bowl-sized amaretto, again chosen from their extensive wine-anddrinks menu. The Chill Out restaurant, with its immaculate toilets (complete with bubbly water feature), an open kitchen, so you can see your food being prepared, disabled facilities and the right level of ambient music, is a place that everyone can enjoy. I can happily say that this beautiful restaurant has been open for over ten years, and thoroughly deserves its reputation of excellence. It is open from 10.30am-11.00pm. Joao’s new-boy flair CD Marino 0 CD Tenerife 3 By Colin Kirby
CD Tenerife update
JOAO Rodriguez, fleet of foot, full of tricks, and eager to please, impressed for Tenerife in this pre-season win on Wednesday night. All eyes were on the new, Colombian loan-signing from Chelsea. But there were plenty of encouraging signs for both teams, in front of 500 fans at the Las Americas stadium. Tenerife started with a strong line-up, and Joao was soon in full flight down the left flank, teasing defenders and creating opportunities for the Santa Cruz visitors. Malbasic is marking time as Tenerife try to off-load him, but that didn’t show, and he was the perfect target-man. Marino welcomed the return of several former players, who had drifted away from them in recent seasons. Jonathan Sesma was back leading the attack, but Zeben had the best early run before being squeezed out by Tenerife’s defence. The opening goal came after Juan Villar raided
down the right and supplied a good ball for Malbasic, who finished well. Pre-season is a good time for young players to stake a claim for a senior shirt, as Nahuel probably discovered. He was in at left-back and looked comfortable in the role. His time has surely come! Luis Perez, at right-back, is always pleasing to watch. He is tenacious in the tackle, and he enjoyed pushing forward in this game. Changes are the name of the game in these early fixtures, and keeper Dani
Hernandez gave way to Angel after just 30 minutes. Angel was sharp to deny an effort from Connor, and he smothered another attempt from new Marino signing Guti. Half-time brought wholesale changes on both sides. Joao was replaced by the other new signing, Undabarrena, who fitted in well in midfield. And within five minutes of the re-start, it was 2-0. Brian Acosta was a must-keep player after last season, and he served notice of more returns to come, when he tapped in a goal from
Reeling in the big fish PERSISTANCE looks like it is paying off for CD Tenerife sporting director Serrano, in his quest for Jose Naranjo. The 23-year-old Spanish striker has long been on Serrano’s wish-list, and, hopefully, he will complete a loan move from Belgium parent club KRC Genk, in the next few days. A lot hinges on Serbian forward Felip Malbasic leaving the Santa Cruz club for one of several suitors, with a nice pay-day coming in the other direction. Naranjo made his name with 16 goals in 38 games for Nastic, in the 20152016 season. But a onemillion-euro move to topflight Celta Vigo slowed his progress, because his firstteam chances were limited. Six goals in 21 games at his next stop, Genk,
was followed by a loan to Leganes last season. Local forward Brian Martin, 22, is being loaned out to Melilla in Segunda B, the division below CD Tenerife, to give him regular games and boost his development. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife travel to Gran Canaria to play old rivals
Las Palmas in the Mahou Cup. This curtain raiser is usually over two legs, but with CD Tenerife’s pitch being re-laid, it comes down to just one game this year. Now that Las Palmas have been relegated, the teams will meet in league action this season, and their clashes are always full of fire and thunder. This opener will be a little more subdued, naturally, but there is no such thing as a “friendly” between the two inter-island rivals. See for yourselves on TV Canaria, because the game is being shown live at 8.30pm. There’s not such good news about the Teide Trophy game in La Orotava on Saturday, 11th August. German club Mainz 05 have declined the organisers’ offer to play CD Tenerife, so the search is on for another high-quality opponent to stretch them.
a head-down in the box. It was a different look for the second half, but most effective, as Suso turned back the clock on the right wing, while Tanzanian player Faradi was flying down the other flank… another B-team player hammering on the firstteam door. With so many comings and goings, it was a bit like a merry-go-round. Tenerife used a third keeper when Carlos Abad replaced Angel after 60 minutes. Coach Etxeberria has promised to give his upand-coming youth players a chance, and Borja is being fast-tracked. The forward put in a good shift and didn’t look out of his depth. But the
sheer class of Acosta kept Tenerife in control, and Marino were grateful for important saves from new keeper Alonso. Some of the forgotten squad players at Tenerife were given a chance to smell the grass, and Montañes even had a hand in setting up Acosta for the third goal. Juan Carlos was also given a run-out, though both may yet fail the final cut when more new players arrive. But it was all about getting those leg muscles moving again, and, in that respect, it was a useful game. But tougher tests await as Etxeberria tries to forge a promotion-chasing side.
EXTRA-TIME SEA SWIMMING: Last Saturday, 250 swimmers set out from the old Santa Cruz Anaga dock to the ferry port for the Travesia A Nado Farola race. The charity event was to raise funds for AMATE, the Spanish breast-cancer charity. Betuel Gonzalez won the men’s race in 13min 17sec, with female winner Nazaret Alviche just touching home inside 13 minutes. WORLD CUP: Just four years to wait for the Qatar competition, to be held between 21st November and 20th December. The good news is that it’s winter there, although the Middle-East heat will still be quite a challenge. The bad news is that it will mean major disruption for domestic leagues in Europe. RUNNING: Last Sunday, 200 people took on an uphill battle in Guimar. The sixth annual Vertical de Guimar was staged from El Puertito to Mirador de Pajara. Men’s winner was Hector Afonso Gonzalez, in 22min 51sec, and the women’s race was won by Amada Sanchez, in 29min 44sec.

Mad times for the Crew LEAGUE leaders Suters 20:30 Crew kept up their great start to the season, as they travelled to Mad Hatters and showed them no mercy as they ran out 8-0 winners. In a one-sided match, Gaffers recorded the same scoreline when Ourplace Playboys visited them, with Dan hitting a 106 checkout for the home team, keeping up their quest for the top spot. The Pub had topform Pablo hitting a maximum when they were hosted by Palms Pool Bar, and the visitors had a splendid 7-1 win. And what an excellent night at Picasso’s Pool Bar, who welcomed Pas O Nadas ‘A’, with Daddy Cool and his usual 180 helping to claim a 6- 2 win. Emma stole the show for the home side when she beat birthday-boy Wattie, leaving Steve Sub disappointed that shirt-swapping did not take place at the end of
the game. Phoenix Bar welcomed The Loch-In ‘A’, and, on a night when the result could have gone either way, both teams were happy with a 4-4 draw, as the visitors took the trebles. Last season’s promoted teams, Legends and Sandys, had a fantastic battle, which ended all-square at 4-4, to the satisfaction of all. The Red Devils were disappointed when Ed and Marilyns ‘A’ took home a 7-1 success. And with boss Ed finishing on 114 and 100, they were probably even more under the weather because Belgium went out of the World Cup at the semi-final stage. The Loch-In Bullseyes played host to local rivals Sundowners, and, after a brilliant night of darts, laughter and banter, they won the 701 game to take the spoils 5-3. Pas O Nadas ’B’ also took the team game to win 5-3 against Ourplace Breakaways, and it was a superb night for Gio, with some tremendous darts for the home team. Tony’s 120 check-out
helped Scruffy Lads to a 5-3 win at Emerald Lounge, while their ‘B’ team travelled to Marilyns ‘B’ and brought home a 6-2 victory to keep them in touch at the top. Nauta Nomads went down 5-3 against visitors Clouseau’s, and Outplace Playgirls welcomed Waterfall, who, thanks to Lisa’s 160, gave the visitors a 6-2 win.

El Medano’s young at heart
MONDAYS, Wednesdays and Fridays are now etched in the calendars of El Medano’s mature people, thanks to Granadilla de Abona Council.
It has started free, regular, beach-gym sessions on those days for people of the third age. The sessions will take place through July, August and September, between 9am-1pm, and 200 people have already volunteered. The promotion also in-
cludes free transport, from various areas of the municipality, and Sara Cano Delgado, Councillor for the Third Age and Sport, welcomed the burst of energy. “Our main objective is to encourage an active life and healthy habits,” she said. Granadilla Mayor Jose
Domingo Regalado Gonzalez was equally as enthusiastic, adding: “We are pleased to offer a programme of exercise and enjoyment, close to the shore of Granadilla, with a varied range of ways to keep fit.” The beach will get plenty of
use from the keep-fit group. They are being led by two qualified instructors, who are putting them through their paces, gently. With so many surfers, swimmers and scuba-divers also enjoying the charms of El Medano, it should be a long, fit summer.

Motor Racing
Another lap for circuit THE International Motor Circuit of Tenerife has moved another stage forward, thanks to Tenerife Cabildo’s approval of an 899,480-euro sum for preliminary road work. The cash will complete the documentation to start building access roads, from north and south, to the Atogo track, to the west of San Isidro. The project was originally launched in July 2016 by an Italian consortium. But after the ground-breaking ceremony a year later, work stopped because of problems at the Italian end of the operation. That´s when the Cabildo stepped in, taking over the project with its original 23-million-euro budget. Gestur Tenerife SA has updated the design of the track, to meet the latest specifications required by the International Automobile Federation (FMI) and the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM). Last October, the Cabildo commissioned a technical
engineering company, which specialises in motor circuits, to ensure everything was in line with current safety needs.
The Cabildo has approved a five-million-euro investment in this year’s budget to move on with the project. Once complete, the
track is expected to bring big rewards in employment, and more economic development to the south of the island.
The track will be up to Grand Prix testing standards, with speeds of up to 310km/hr on the straight.
Basketball
Four team-building boosts
AFTER weeks of losing players, Iberostar Tenerife were relieved to add four new signings to the squad for the new season, and all with a proven track record.
Sebas Saiz, 24, a Madridborn player, joins from Burgos, and Tomasz Gielo, a 25-year-old Poland international, has moved across from Juventud of Badalona. Both players can fill the pivot role, which is an area where Tenerife were left exposed by recent departures. The most
pleasing addition, probably, is Thaddus McFadden, a 31-year-old from Michigan, who has just been given a Georgian passport. Dual nationals are highly prized in the Spanish league because there is a limit on non-EU players for each team. McFadden, who had previously been top scorer
in the Greek league, spent last season playing in China. Latest to sign up was 27-year-old American Colton Iverson, previously with Andorra. Two more new faces are expected soon for the La Laguna club,
which is their statement of intent for a serious assault on the league after last season’s mid-table finish. Fixtures are out in a few days, and the season gets underway on 27th September.

Next stop, Gareth Southgate! SOUTHGATE underground station was this week renamed after England’s World Cup manager, in honour of his team’s magnificent World Cup run. The Piccadilly line station, in north London, was rebranded “Gareth Southgate” for 48 hours from Monday, after he had steered his England side to the World Cup semifinals last week. It was England’s most successful World Cup since they reached the
same stage in Italy, 28 years ago. Modest Southgate won over millions of fans with his handling of the players, and his honest, forthright style.
