Siam Park stamps its unique seal on world waterparks

Cont. from Front For the fifth consecutive year, TripAdvisor has awarded it the Travellers’ Choice Award for the Best Waterpark in the World. The accolade is down to the visitors’ positive feedback, demonstrating that the success of its management lies in a perfect balance of quality, innovation and excellence. In fact, this combination has put it in a dominant position: it is the only park to have won this award so many times in a row, and it is the only one to have received it since TripAdvisor inaugurated the “waterparks” category five years ago. The Loro Parque Company, to which this water attraction’s theme park belongs, has highlighted the special honour this recognition represents, granted by visitors to the Park, and users of the TripAdvisor travel portal, based on their independent opinions, which have been founded on their experiences. Blanca Zayas, Communications Director at TripAdvisor Spain, confirmed: “Siam Park has achieved what no other theme park in the world has achieved, and positioning itself as No.1, for so many years in a row,

is a quality seal, recognised by users around the world. And it will, undoubtedly, open more doors to both national and international tourism.” The news comes in the middle of the presentation and opening of two new attractions. Patong Rapids is a new, Siam Park challenge, which breaks all the moulds, surpassing the alreadyincredible Mekong Rapids. It runs over a 235-metre course and includes an area of complete darkness. With a capacity of 1,200 people per hour, it

minimises waiting time to enable visitors to enjoy its incredible switchback curves to the limit. It also includes impressive disc floats, which allow you to experience a unique feeling of speed and adrenaline. The other new attraction is Coco Beach, a children’s playground which will allow youngsters to experience great adventures with their families. They will be able to enjoy incredible sensations in the new wave pool, which occupies 1,000 square metres, and is suitable for the younger members of

the household, simulating the famous ruins of Angkor Wat. These two attractions, along with other surprises yet to come, will offer visitors adrenaline and fun in equal parts, and will attract audiences of all ages. Siam Park follows a totallyenvironmentally-friendly philosophy, employing the latest technological developments in every detail. The water feeding the Park is part of a closed circuit, which begins at sea, and the CO2=0 formula is

applied, which means that local products are used, mainly in the restaurants and cafeterias, thus minimising the carbon footprint associated with the transport of imported products. This environmental commitment has earned Siam Park the Biosphere Park certificate from the UNESCO-linked Institute for Responsible Tourism (ITR). This accredits their responsibility towards the environment, in addition to the ISO 14000, ISO 9000 and EMAS certificates.

Strolling into September

Keep young ones in their car seats THE Adeje School of “Seguridad y Convivencia” (security and social harmony) is already planning its September schedule, with a series of walks, among other things. Interested parties can find out more details and sign up online (www.adeje.es), call 922 775 109, or pop into the school (in Las Nieves) in person. The walks organised so

far will take place on 15th September (includes kayaking), 22nd September and 23rd (to Teno with an overnight stay in a hostel), 20th October, 10th November (La Gomera) and 8th December. Also in the pipeline are workshops on first-aid, in different settings: the elderly, the workplace and maritime assistance, etc. The school is open from 9am to 3pm for the next few days, but it will be closed during August, reopening to the public on 3rd September.

Drug-dealer arrested again

NATIONAL Police arrested a man on Tuesday in Santa Cruz, La Palma, for drug-trafficking and drug-dealing.

He was already familiar to the officers, because he has an existing police record involving similar crimes. The 41-year-old was surprised by the officers, who intervened immediately after they had witnessed a drugs’ transaction on a busy street

in the island’s capital. Police searched him and found 14 cocaine wraps, each bag weighing 0.5gms and ready for distribution. They also found 120 euros in his possession, which were his takings from previous deals. At the time of his arrest, the man, who is now awaiting a court appearance for sentencing, was accompanied by his former girlfriend, who, recently, had taken out an injunction against him for domestic violence.

“I know how much you love me, but please, when we use the car, can you put me in my special chair and not in your arms or on your knee?” THIS is an extract from a special message, posted on Twitter by Santa Cruz Local Police, to try to get the message across to the public to stop habits, which many people still have. They still travel with babies on their laps, not aware, or respecting the laws

that have been made by the DGT (Spain’s traffic department), regarding a child’s safety in a vehicle. The police posted their Twitter message, specifically, after stopping a driver on Tuesday morning, just after nine o’clock. They spotted a woman, sitting on the back seat of the car, with a small child in her arms. Curiously, there was also a baby-seat in the car, but it was unused. The mother was charged and fined by the Local Police, which was an incentive for them to make a video

and post it on twitter. The police stressed that the last thing they wanted to do was enforce a punishment, when it was a mother’s instinct to protect her child. But they obviously want the public to be aware that, by having a child on your lap on the back seat of the car, you are not protecting the child but doing the complete opposite. Local Police are hopeful that the message will get across to many people, who still don’t realise the importance of child-safety in vehicles.

Escaped murderer could even be here GUILLERMO Fernández Bueno, a convicted rapist and murderer, has failed to return to El Dueso prison in Cantabria de Santoña, on Spain’s north coast. And he could even be in Tenerife! Bueno, said to be a recluse, was sentenced to 26½ years after being found guilty of the crimes he committed at a Cafe Victoria, Costa Adeje, in December 2000. The prisoner, who had been on a week’s discharge, should have been back in prison last Sunday (22nd July). But officers soon suspected that he had absconded. The National Police and Guardia Civil were alerted by a prison official, who asked for an immediate search because of the prisoner’s vile nature. Both police units, along with a group specialising in violence against women, have published

photographs of him, with a description. They have also told people to be vigilant, and to look out for the man. He could be anywhere, they said, from his hometown Cantabria, to Tenerife, where he lived before committing the crimes. The police published his face almost everywhere because they had no idea where to begin the hunt. And sources hinted that the search had already gone nationwide, because

of the uncertainness of his whereabouts. Authorities have stated the importance of people being vigilant, but they have also asked them to remain calm. They say that all the relevant protocols are in place, and that officials are on stand-by, awaiting news of the fugitive. Officials are also hopeful that the convict will return to the prison of his own accord. But his last known address was in Tenerife…

Plane nightmare for 300 trapped tourists UP to 300 tourists were trapped inside a Thomas Cook plane at Lanzarote Airport on Sunday, before the company decided to cancel the flight to Manchester. The holiday-makers were looking forward to getting home when they boarded the flight. But they were told to stay seated, and they ended up spending a gruelling three hours in the plane, with no air-conditioning and no food or water, with the outside temperature soaring, at 37º. One tourist said the poor conditions were driving people crazy. There was no fresh air, but plenty of bad smells from vomit, along with babies’ nappies. Passengers also complained that they could smell what seemed to be a type of paraffin oil in the cabin. Before embarking, they were already informed that there would be a slight delay, and

that the flight would be leaving late. But the travellers believed that once they were all inside the plane, they would be taking off. Instead, the aircraft was stuck on the runway for three insufferable hours. One passenger said it was a disaster: babies were crying, elderly people

were demanding fresh air, and there were also a few diabetics on board, who needed their medicine because of the conditions, but it was in the hold. Paul Hutchings, head of Thomas Cook’s Operations Department, said the delay was caused by a technical problem and that the company used every

Skin-cancer warning: Beware that hot sun!

SPANISH Cancer Association (AECC) talked to students and visitors at Adeje Cultural Centre on Tuesday about the need for proper sun protection, to combat skin cancer. Members were handing out leaflets from a stand, with information on good practices for a healthy skin throughout the summer. The event was part of a wider campaign to alert people to the dangers of over-exposure to the sun, especially during the summer months. “We need to take care throughout the year, and adopt healthy lifestyle habits,” said Adeje Health Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo, who is also a qualified paediatrician. “But during the summer, with the

good weather and more outdoor activities, we sometimes tend to leave precautions to one side. Yet these are nothing more than ensuring that we are properly hydrated, eating the right foods and using adequate sun protection; above all, in the middle of the day.” The information leaflets were available in English and in Spanish, listing these basic recommendations: *Drink water regularly *Use sun-creams with a high protection factor when you are outdoors, and apply that cream every two hours *Wear hats or light T-shirts when you are exposed directly to the sun, and use parasols *Don’t sunbathe between midday and 4pm *Avoid extended exposure to the sun *Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes

resource possible to ensure the travellers were not delayed on the runway for too long. He also apologised for the conditions they had to endure for so long. Thomas Cook Airlines is now looking into the events that happened, and the company is planning to compensate each passenger with 500 euros.

The eight diners splashed out on two bottles of vintage Louis Roederer champagne, at 15,000 euros each, while feasting on Nalon eels, barnacles, sea bass and sirloin steak. The owners of the restaurant, which has been serving Asturian food in the capital for more than 40 years, were so impressed that they shared the receipt on social media. The total came to 49,292 euros, which, if the magnificent eight decided to share the bill, means they each paid 6,161 euros.

NEWS IN BRIEF Fallen hunter hurt badly

A MAN was severely injured after tumbling into a difficult area to reach, while on a hunting expedition in the Santa Cruz area of La Lecheras. The accident happened at around 10.30am on Sunday, and an emergency call was made by fellow hunters, requesting assistance for the 53-year-old. Fire-fighters were dispatched, along with an ambulance team, to assess the situation, and it soon became obvious that the emergency helicopter was needed. When found, the frightened man was in considerable pain, with signs of chest injuries, as well as severe bruising. He was stabilised by medics, then hoisted on to the helicopter, which carried him to the North Airport. Once there, the hunter was transferred immediately to Candelaria Hospital, where he was diagnosed with four broken ribs, a punctured lung and a broken wrist, fractured in several places. He is believed to be recovering, under observation, in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

They couldn’t stop thieving

GUARDIA Civil officers, based in Los Corralejos, Fuerteventura, arrested two men at the beginning of July, suspected of committing several robberies. The pair, in their early twenties, were said to have targeted eight holiday complexes in the La Oliva municipality. Yet they escaped detection for several months, despite a string of robberies, carried out from November 2017 until March this year. They are accused of breaking and entering some 36 rooms, occupied by tourists, and they also face charges of trespassing and fraud. Guardia officers confirmed that the investigation started at the end of 2017, when they began to receive several reports of robberies, all with similar traits. The case is in the hands of the local court, and both men are awaiting an appearance there.

Britons accused of rape

FOUR British men have been arrested by Ibiza police after the alleged rape of a 29-year-old woman, also from the UK. She claims she was drugged and sexually assaulted, after meeting the men at a San Antonio bar. Two men were remanded in custody, but the other two were released on bail as police investigations continue.

Residencia… and what it stands for

GETTING residencia is when you register as a resident in Spain, with the Spanish National Police (extranjería or local police station).

During the process, you will be assigned an NIE (número de identificación extranjero), which is a foreigner’s ID number. You will also be given a green, credit-card-size certificate, which you must carry with you at all times, while in Spain. If you have an A4-size, green residency certificate, you have already registered as a resident. If you registered over five years ago, then please re-register as a permanent resident. They have more secured rights for the future, such as the right to access healthcare. Do you already have a NIE, on a white piece of paper? Sorry, but you have not registered as a resident. You will need to register, as such, with the National Police as soon as possible, if you are living in Tenerife, or anywhere in Spain. When do you need to get it? And Spanish law states that you should register within the first three months of having moved to the country. If you haven’t done

it yet, complete the process as soon as possible. What do you need to bring? For EU nationals, it is quite straightforward. You will need to bring proof of healthcare cover (such an S1 form or confirmation of the convenio especial, or a work contract, and proof of income (eg. proof of pension). Please go to your nearest extranjería or police office for the complete list of all supporting documents. You can also find this list on the Spanish Ministry of the Interior’s website (information in Spanish). Why do you need it? Apart from it being the law, you will be asked for your NIE anytime you need to carry out official transactions such as registering for healthcare (eg. S1 form), social security, getting a bank account, or even a bus pass… And there are even more advantages Having residencia secures your healthcare for the future. Did you know that when you have been registered as a resident for at least five years, you can then apply for permanent residency? Once you have that, you will always be covered for healthcare in Spain just like a Spanish resident. Please see residency-based healthcare for more information. Is being on the padron

the same, or just as good as being registered as a resident? No. Being registered as a resident means you have secured your rights as a resident in Spain. You have registered on a national register. Being registered on the padron means that you have registered with your local town hall and municipality. This means you have secured your rights to access local services. You have also secured funding for your council, so they can provide those services. But you need to register on both. How do I start? Please be aware that you will probably need to make an appointment (cita previa) in order to register. In some areas, there are month-long waiting lists, so start the procedure as soon as possible. You can make an appointment to apply for residency, or to move on to permanent residency here. Does it seem complicated? If you are worried about the process, you can hire a translator or a gestor, or get a Spanish speaker to go along with you. If you live in an area where there are many foreigners, or other British nationals, the town hall can also help you out. If you have any further queries, you can contact the team at: healthcare.spain@ fco.gov.uk

Bronson dumps new wife, after 8 months

BRITAIN’S most violent prisoner is divorcing his wife after only eight months, because pictures have surfaced of a man with his head in her breasts in Tenerife. Notorious Charles Bronson, currently in HMP Wakefield, told 37-year-old Paula Williamson that he was seeking a divorce after the snaps from a wild night out came to light. The former Coronation Street actress, who was enjoying herself on the island, dared a group of six men to find out if her boobs were fake or not. Connor Boyes, 26, took the challenge and promptly placed his head in her breasts, while someone else took photos. Although, initially, she believed Bronson would

laugh it off, Mrs Williamson has been left heartbroken after the notorious criminal, 65, called off their marriage. She told the Sun newspaper: “I’m absolutely devastated. I can’t stop crying. I made one stupid mistake. It was just a dare. They took the snap, and, in that one second, they ended my marriage.” Despite being upset, Mrs Williamson said Bronson had let her down for not renouncing violence. He is believed to have attacked the deputy governor at HMP Wakefield, who banned him from taking photos at his wedding. Mrs Williamson added: “I have always stuck up for him. I’ve lost everything through this: my work, my family, my friends and my dignity. Now, I’ve lost my husband.” Bronson, who is serving a life sentence, has already spent a total of 40 years in jail.

Loro Parqu for birth of LORO Parque already has everything in place to receive Morgan the orca’s calf, which should arrive by the end of the summer. The Parque’s veterinarians, and the external consultants monitoring Morgan’s pregnancy closely, have been working to ensure that all aspects are under control to deal with any situation that may arise at the time of birth. Doctor Geraldine Lacave, a Belgian veterinary surgeon, and a specialist in marine mammals, has been a Loro Parque consultant for over 10 years. And she revealed how the checks on Morgan’s pregnancy were carried out thoroughly, thanks to an ultrasound scanner which examines her almost daily, and reports that everything is going perfectly, both with Morgan and with the foetus. The aim now is to determine, as precisely as possible, the date of birth, because, though some indicators are known, there is, generally, little experience with the birth of these animals. To this end, Morgan’s body

temperature is monitored, regularly, because it is known to drop by one degree about 24 hours before the calf is born. The circumference of different parts of her body is also measured, frequently, because the baby is expected to grow considerably, a few weeks prior to birth. Loro Parque experts also update a behavioural record, in which they monitor her swimming style, her relationship with other animals, etc, and calculate the distance between the two breast folds, which will be greater in the days leading up to calving, among other indicators. Doctor Jorge Soares, Loro Parque’s Veterinary Director, says Morgan’s history throws some uncertainty over the immediate moments of childbirth, because it could have an impact on her behaviour as a first-time mother. It is not known how she and the rest of the group will react, which is why there is a whole team of experts, working daily, to be prepared for any circumstance. Doctor Lacave says that an action protocol has been prepared, in the event of a

difficult birth. Although, she says: “It is most likely that the baby will be born, rise to the surface, breathe, and then go swimming off peacefully with its mother.” It would also be completely normal for Morgan, or the baby, to need some help, which is why all personnel involved are prepared to act. In addition, as soon as the estimated date of birth approaches, a round-the-clock guard will be activated, augmenting the usual 24-hour security surveillance on the premises. Thus, a team of people will

observe Morgan’s behaviour, breathing rate, activity, etc, continuously. “The trainers live with these animals every day,” says Dr Lacave. “They know them very well and are likely to detect their behavioural changes more accurately than any scientific indication.” This watch will be extended, at least for a while, once the calf is born, to check that everything is going well. Loro Parque, currently the best zoo in the world, according to TripAdvisor, is finalising the development of a tablet

application, which will allow them to record, analyse and share, in real time, all the data collected in the observations (respiratory rate, lactation, behaviour, etc), with the veterinary staff and external consultants. Both Dr. Soares and Dr. Lacave explain that, in cetaceans, babies’ immune systems are very weak, because, for about a month, they receive immunity through colostrum and breast milk, known as passive immunity. They then begin to form their own immunity, little by little,

until they reach adulthood, about a year later. Hence, the sensitivity of this first phase, in which any injury or infection could pose many risks. However, these are inferences made from the study of dolphins, of which much more is known, because not many people have handled such a young baby orca. Therefore, this is a great opportunity to learn more about orca calves and breeding, which will help populations in the wild. Given that the current population of killer whales in the Western Pacific area is believed to have been sterile for some years, because of the concentration of chemical contaminants in the water, all the knowledge that a case such as Morgan’s can provide will be of enormous value. In Loro Parque, where the news of this orca’s pregnancy at the end of last year was a source of great joy, everyone is looking forward to the arrival of the calf. “We hope to have a new, superhealthy orca and a super-happy Mum in Morgan in September,” says Dr Soares.

PP’s leader is Right-minded

PABLO Casado became the new President of Spain’s Popular Party (PP) last Saturday in Madrid, defeating his rival, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría, by 451 votes. The 37-year-old’s victory heralds a shift further to the right by Spain’s main conservative party. Casado campaigned in favour of reintroducing more restrictive abortion legislation and tougheningup the criminal code’s response to secessionist attempts, as well reforming election laws, “to stop depending on nationalists and minority parties”. But the leadership battle has revealed internal divisions within the PP, which lost control of the Spanish Government on 1st June. “People are expecting a liberal, conservative reform

agenda from us,” said Casado on Esradio. “I am committed to this, and we will carry it through. The PP is back.” The new PP leader wants to hold a special convention to review the party’s values, and also to reaffirm its ideology. “We have to be everything to the right of the Socialist Party (PSOE),” he stressed. Casado takes over from former Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who was recently ousted in a no-confidence vote in Congress. The motion was headed by PSOE leader Pedro Sánchez, who became the new head of government on 1st June and intends to serve out the remainder of the term, until 2020. But the PSOE will not be the only rival to beat at the next election. Voter-intention polls have been showing the erosion of support for the PP, many of whose traditional supporters now say they prefer Ciudadanos, the younger liberal party.

THE rights of workers in the 21st global market place, and the emergence of post-truth in politics, were just two of the subjects under the spotlight during the first day of Adeje’s Summer University. Gloria Rojas Rivero, the University of La Laguna’s law professor, is leading the course on “Globalización y empresas en red: organización empresarial y nuevas formas de trabajo” (globalisation and internet businesses and new forms of work). She is looking, in particular, at the consequences of this new form of business and employment for workers and their work conditions, with workforces spread across many, different, national jurisdictions. “We are examining how we deal with the main concerns of institutions, dealing with workers’ rights and conditions, given the phenomenon of global economy”, she said. Over the three-day course, students will have examined delimitation, inter-company co-operation, franchising, sub-contract networks, unions, collaborative

platforms, and how workers can identify and guarantee their rights. To date, she said: “The rights of workers are not evolving to meet the new needs, and, to date, most of the new problems for workers haven’t been dealt with adequately. “The new business networks mean that a company can

make its products in over 60 countries, and those workers are subject to different labour laws and conditions.” Rosa María Calaf, the highly-regarded television correspondent, was the main speaker at the opening session of a conference on the history and social communication

of Macaronesia, as part of the Summer University. She offered students a personal vision of journalism today, in particular “posttruth”, in which debate is framed largely by appeals to emotion, disconnected from details, and by the repetition of talking points, with speakers rebutting the presentation of facts.

And while it could seem like a new development, she says post-truths have been around for a long time, yet are more prevalent today. The existence or peddling of “false news” goes back over many years, and she even referred to England’s King Charles II in 1762, who had to issue an edict, outlawing false news about the Crown circulating in taverns. Post-truths, which appeal to the emotions, are nothing new. But what has changed, she argued, was that new technology increased the widespread impact and speed of circulation of posttruths. She named Brexit, the election of Trump and the recent Italian general election, in addition to the Catalan situation, as examples of issues which had been, and are, affected by the use of post-truths. The Adeje Summer University has been running all week with course, workshops and parallel cultural activities in the centre of Adeje town.

Anti-jab parents keep Bakery break-in kids away from needle grates with trio THREE hooded men’s attempted break-in at a townsquare bakery at La Laguna’s San Matias flopped badly.

AN anti-vaccination movement has built up a following of several hundred families in the city of Barcelona, according to the latest, local health survey. It was conducted by local authorities, and, though it is still a fringe movement, the poll shows that around 3,000 (1.5%) Barcelona children have not had their shots. Families cited religious and ideological motives, and, above all, that they viewed vaccines as unnecessary, or that they presented a risk to their kids. A further 2% of under-15s are not vaccinated for medical reasons, such as immune deficiency, according to a survey, conducted among 4,000 residents by the Barcelona Public Health Agency. Local health chief Gemma Tarafa has stressed that 96.5% of children are vaccinated, which ensures immunisation for the entire group. But it also means that despite individuals being exposed to infectious diseases,

It happened during the early hours of Wednesday, and police are baffled about their motive. Neighbours witnessed them trying, unsuccessfully, to get into the premises through the window, there is a large, critical proportion which is immune to the pathogens. “It’s important to say that the unvaccinated children do not have problems because there is a huge number of children who are immunised,” said Tarafa. Yet there is no such thing as zero risk: in 2015, an unvaccinated child died of diphtheria in the Catalan town of Olot, despite an international effort to save his life. An anti-toxin had to be imported, urgently, from Russia and France, because it had not been prescribed in Spain for three decades. Madrid issued an international call for help, and the Russian ambassador to Spain

managed to get the first dose flown in from Moscow. Tarafa said the Barcelona situation was “good, compared with other European cities”, adding that that the city will support the Barcelona Public Health Agency’s vaccination drive, which includes sending letters to families with newborns. The health chief also announced more outreach work, to explain the benefits of vaccines to families who do not see them as necessary, or recommendable. The introduction of an immunisation programme in Catalonia has reduced the number of cases in the last 30 years, from 36,740 in 1984 to 1,506 in 2014.

despite its metal grates. They saw the trio, who were frightened off for some reason, jump into their car and race off towards Los Andreas. The Local and National Police, who both arrived at the scene after being warned, spoke with witnesses, and then searched the area briefly, to no avail. Police are asking witnesses to provide any relevant information.

WHEN John Riddle took early retirement in 1997 to pursue his dream of becoming a journalist and author, he headed straight to Los Cristianos. And, in September, he’ll back there to launch two of his new books, “Victorian Shipbuilders” and “Stars of the Empire Theatre”, in the Devon Arms bar. John, though born in Almondbury, Huddersfield, in West Yorkshire, was raised in his parents’ home town of Hartlepool, where he was educated. Then, when he started work, he began studying at the Hartlepool College of Further Education, progressing to the University of Leeds. On graduation, he returned to Hartlepool and worked for three decades as a probation officer, including nearly 11 years in Durham Jail and the neighbouring, maximumsecurity Frankland Prison. During his time “inside”, he had tea with murderers Rosemary West and the late Myra Hindley. “Well somebody had to do it,” he quipped. But he cannot divulge any conversations with inmates because he had to sign the Official Secrets Act. John was elected as a Councillor for both Hartlepool Borough, and, later, for Cleveland County. And he was the latter Council’s representative at the Queen’s Garden Party, at Buckingham Palace, in July 1978. “That was an experience, having tea and cucumber sandwiches and rubbing shoulders with Donald Sinden and Bette Davis,” recalled John. In his spare time, John was a founder member of the successful Hartlepool Ten Pin Bowling Club, who won the League

and Cup double in 1997. In the same year, he also represented Great Britain in the World Police and Fire Service Games in Calgary, Canada, qualifying to play because he was a seconded member of Her Majesty’s Prison Service. Along with another colleague from Durham, and two men from Australia, they entered the team event at the last minute and came away with a bronze medal. “I laid down my balls after that as they became too heavy, although I did participate in a league at Harleys, in Las Americas, for a couple of seasons,” he said, laughing. “I seem to recall one of your permanent residents, Roscoe, beat me on several occasions.” These days, John plays lawn green bowls, and he has

picked up a hat-trick of trophies in the veteran’s club he represents. When John retired, he lived in Tenerife for several years, working on local newspapers. Then, on his return to the UK, he began writing a series of books, many about his home town, and one special book, “The King of Cappielow”, about a Scottish footballer who played for Celtic and Morton. “I asked Sir Alex Ferguson to write the foreword because he often faced Andy Ritchie, who is the subject of the book,” said John. “At the time, Fergie was manager of Aberdeen, and he agreed to participate in the project.” John learned a great deal about publishing books, and, for a time, ran his own publishing company, as well as writing. He realised that if he could get a famous person to write the foreword, the book had a better chance of selling. He enlisted the aid of Jeff Stelling, of Sky TV’s Soccer Saturday, plus former England international Peter Beardsley, and Scotland’s Asa Hartford, who also starred for Manchester City. John also recruited the former Chairman of Darlington Football Club, as well as safecracker George Reynolds for one of his books, entitled “Jailed”. It worked… and, 16 books later, the frequent Los

Cristianos visitor is still going strong. This year, he has visited the island in January, February and March, and is set to return in September, and also for three months, from December to February 2019. Included in his 16 titles are two books associated with the island, the first being “Tenerife Photographers”, which he edited from members’ photographs of “Tenerife thro’ a lens”. It’s a social-media site, with over 1,000 members, and the second book is called “Tenerife Quiz”. He added: “I usually place copies of my books in The Devon Arms’ little library in Los Cristianos, but they disappear with remarkable regularity.” Honest John admitted: “My books don’t sell millions, but they do raise significant sums of money for charities.” He has a social media website in the UK called The Los Cristianos advertiser, which, he says: “keeps me in touch with what’s going on in the island when I am not here. It also encourages people in the north-east to visit the island. “Tenerife is my second home, and, given a fair wind and those lucky lottery numbers, I will move back to the island and buy a home in Los Cristianos.”

Mattress-mad moped man!

SOCIAL media has gone batty, with a video of a man transporting a double-sized mattress… on his moped! The man has been recorded with the mattress held in place with his legs, obviously with both sides sticking out as he rode around the Gran Canaria capital of Las Palma, endangering himself, as well as other drivers on the road. The video is called “People will never surprise us”, but some comments pasted across Facebook aren’t as witty as they might have been. One said that his fine must have been huge, while another said it would have cost him less to buy a new mattress. And one said it would have been cheaper for him to have hired a removal van.

Overweight van was danger on the roads LOCAL Police in Santa Cruz were forced to stop a van as it was driven around Santa Cruz, because it appeared to be overloaded and dangerous. It was obviously transporting several heavy items, which led police to suspect that it was carrying a lot more than its recommended safety weight. The van, spotted in the early hours on Tuesday, heading towards the port, caught the officers’ attention because of the smoking exhaust pipe at the back of the van, which

had a strong, burning smell. When they stopped the van and checked out the paperwork, they realised that it didn’t carry the obligatory transport certificate. They also saw that the 47-year-old driver didn’t have the correct category on his licence, for handling a vehicle of this type. The officers escorted the driver and van to an area inside the port, where they carried out an official check. The officers confirmed that its weight, with maximum cargo allowed, should be 5.200kg. But when they had it weighed, they were astonished to find that it registered more than

double the acceptable total. When they tackled the driver about his cargo, and its destination, he told them he worked with car parts from scrap-yards, and that he was taking them to Morocco to sell, which he proved by presenting receipts. He informed officers of his plans, saying that he planned to take a ferry to Cadiz, and then on to Algeciras, from where he would drive to Morocco to sell the items. He was charged on three counts: two for not having the correct transport certificates, and a third charge of driving an overweight vehicle, in a dangerous condition.

A grand total of migrants saved THE seemingly endless stream of migrants, trying to reach Spain in precarious boats, continues unabated, with as many as 1,000 migrants rescued, from last Friday to Sunday evening. Incredibly, some 18,016 people have arrived in Spain since the beginning of the year Last Sunday, Maritime rescue ships helped save 447 people from 24 rickety boats: 190 in the western-most part of the Mediterranean, known as the Alborán Sea, and 257 more in the Strait of Gibraltar. Among those rescued was a heavily-pregnant woman experiencing “very strong contractions”, who had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital in Almería. Four more migrants were also taken to health centres in Tarifa, Cádiz, because of bruising, abdominal pain

and a possible fracture, according to Red Cross sources. On Saturday, 329 people

were rescued from 22 small boats, including two pregnant women, and more than 20 of the migrants

were minors. Most were taken to the southern towns of Barbate, Tarifa and Algeciras.

This year, Spain has received more migrants by sea than Italy. There have been 18,016 arrivals since the beginning of the year, compared with 17,827 in Italy. In Greece, the figure is 14,678, according to the latest data from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM). The new arrivals to Spain come amid a deepening migration crisis. In the first six months of this year, nearly 240 people died during the Mediterranean Sea crossing into Spain, reports the IOM. But Italy’s new, hard-line, immigration policy is pushing more migrants to take the deadlier route to Spain. Under the new Italian Government, all ships carrying migrants are banned from entering the country’s ports, even though arrivals in Italy have dropped 80% from last year. Also, only deaths have increased, to more than 1,000 so far in 2018, according to the UN migration agency.

Tax-payer must find proof... By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

IN my last column, I referred to the Plusvalue tax and the theory of the Constitutional Court, which nullified two articles of the law that regulates such tax.

Now, though, the Supreme Court has ruled that the liquidation of the Tax on the Increased Land Value of Urban Nature (known as Plusvalue Tax), can be annulled, but only when the tax-payer proves that he sold it at a loss. Thousands of appeals were pending before the High Court rulings, after different courts, when discussing the taxable matter itself, realised that the tax was not payable. Plusvalue Tax has been questioned since, and last year, the Constitutional Court ruled that it was not applicable in cases where there were losses. Since then, thousands of claims have been presented against Town Halls for a tax that raises 2,500 million euros, annually, and which has boosted its revenues during the crisis. The solution has been judicial, only because the new law regulating the Plusvlaue Tax, according to the Constitution, has yet to be approved. Many claims stressed that the Town Halls had to prove that there really was an increase in value, to liquidate the municipal capital gain. However, the Supreme Court points out: “It is up to the taxpayer to prove the inexistence of the value of the ground that is heavily transmitted” (a reversal of the burden of proof). How can taxpayers prove that there were losses? The judgement states: “The taxpayer may offer any principle of proof, which, at least, allows it to be studied.” In other words, the taxpayer can offer any clues or evidence to prove to the judge that there has been no profit or gain. The difference between the values of acquisition and transmission, reflected in public deeds, is a way to do

this, but it carries a risk, because the ruling also establishes: “It must be the Administration that contradicts such proof.” As happened in previous cases, the City Halls may present expert assessments that contradict the Deeds. In cases where the experts do not find a loss, the Courts would rule in favour of the Town Halls. The way to guarantee the return (or non-payment) of the Plusvalue Tax is to certify through an expert, the actual losses. In February 2017, the Constitutional Court partially declared null and void the Plusvalue Town Hall Tax in such cases where there was no revaluation. And in another judgement, it ruled that taxpayers should not pay such a tax when the sale had generated losses. Now, the Supreme Court clarifies that you can claim the return and the surplus value, but only in cases where it is proven that there were losses. For the profit cases, there is still one last hope. We are still awaiting the judgement of the Supreme Court, referring to the nullification in cases of the calculation error in the liquidation of Plusvalue Tax, which could suppose the return of up to 37.5% of the sum paid, for those who purchased their properties more than 20 years ago. Thus, the Supreme Court must still decide on the “error” of the formula that calculates the tax, whether with losses or gains. The mathematical formula used by municipalities to obtain the tax base does not calculate the increase experienced during the possession. Yet it calculates an increase in future value in all cases, based on co-efficients. The calculation error affects all taxpayers of this tax, which means that even in cases of profit, taxpayers may object the liquidation of Plusvalue Tax. There are cases in which the profit (difference between the purchase price and sale price) was 1,000 euros, and the Plusvalue Tax 6,000 euros. To date, Navarra is the only Spanish region where Plusvalue Tax has been cancelled, even if there were an increase in value. Have a good summer, everyone.

Sanchez offering licence to spend! PEDRO Sánchez has given regional governments licence to spend extra cash this year by relaxing debt limits. It will make Spain’s new Prime Minister extremely popular with councils because increasing regions’ deficit margins, from 0.1% of their GDP to 0.3%, will free up another 2.4bn euros across the board. It means that longshelved plans, such as building, expanding or renovating schools, as well as hospitals and transport infrastructure, may be able to go ahead, or, at least, reach the next planning stage. It also means that more spending on social welfare needs will be possible. And the extra cash will coincide with the European, local and regional elections, when additional spending will be necessary. This extra leeway has been made possible, thanks to new Finance Minister Nadia Calviño negotiating with the European Commission, to relax national-debt targets for Spain. For this year, the country was required to get its deficit down to 2.2% of its GDP, but Sra Calviño realised this would be impossible after Spain closed 2017 on 3.1%, having missed its

target by some distance. The Commission has agreed to improve the target by 0.5 percentage points for this and next year, to 2.7% for 2018 and 1.8% for 2019, instead of the original, 1.3% requirement. Sánchez has opted to pass this saving on to regional governments, partly to help modernise Spain, and, partly, to help him assess spending needs, in order calculate the so-called “expenses cap” for 2019 more accurately. And Sánchez is hoping to have these figures approved before August. Money available for spending will differ from region to region, but the Basque Country will have an additional 150m euros, according to the Basque National Party (PNV), which is in favour of the move.

Andalucía and Asturias, both run by the socialists, say the relaxed debt target will make their lives easier, although Catalunya and Valencia both support it but say it is “not enough”, and that a complete review of regional financing is needed, since both consider they are underfunded. Meanwhile, analysts at the BBVA bank are concerned, saying the government should be “taking advantage” of Spain’s ‘economic improvement’ in order to reduce debts rather than making targets more lenient. The State and the Social Security office, which funds pensions, and, partly, healthcare, are responsible for the largest part of the national debt, or 16bn euros, while regional governments account for 4bn euros.

Expat pensioners could lose monthly payments IT could become “illegal” to pay private pensions to British expats living in Spain, including those in Tenerife, if the UK leaves the EU without a deal. Government ministers have been told that retired expats, who receive

payments into their bank accounts in their adopted countries, would be left without any money in a no-deal Brexit scenario. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) claims that expats living in the EU “might find that they couldn’t be paid their pensions”, said a report in The Independent newspaper. Huw Evans, ABI Director

General, warned: “That is a perfectly plausible risk in the future, if no agreement is reached in some EU countries.” The concern comes as anxious UK Prime Minister Theresa May defends her Chequers plan from attacks by factions of her own party, as she tries to sell it to the EU. Meanwhile, senior ministers are attempting to draw up new trade deals in Europe. Evans also noted that tourists would be forced to pay higher rates for holiday insurance, because they would lose EU health cards. He added that as many as 38 million contracts could be left in “legal limbo”, because it would be against the law to pay claims in certain EU countries.

THE Spanish budget for 2018 was meant to have been approved in September 2017, but, because of political instability in Spain, and the lack of sufficient support to pass the budget, it had to be postponed.

With no 2018 budget confirmed at the start of the year, the 2017 budget was automatically extended until the new one could be approved. The Spanish Congress finally approved the 2018 budget on 23rd May 2018, after weeks of hard negotiations. It has now been approved by the Senate, and was published in the Spanish Official Gazette (Boletín Oficial del Estado - BOE) on 4th July 2018. The 2018 budget did not include any major tax changes, and will have

The rest of the tax rates and income bands remain the same as 2017 · Wealth tax (“temporarily” re-introduced in 2011) has been extended for yet another year, and is applicable for tax year 2018 · The minimum widower and state pensions have been increased by between 1% and 3%, depending on the case · New deductions for large families (three children or over), and taxpayers with

disabled dependants, have been introduced · There is a new, 30% deduction for taxpayers who invest in new companies, up to 60,000 euros per annum · The tax-free threshold for Spanish lottery winnings increases from 2,500 to 10,000 euros in 2018, 20,000 euros in 2019 and then 40,000 euros in 2020 · The official interest rate is 3%, and for late payments it is 3.75% · The VAT rate for cinema

tickets drops from 21% to 10% · Paternity leave increases from four to five weeks The rules came into force on 6th July 2018, though some of them have special application dates. Ryanair profits nosedive BUDGET airline Ryanair, beset with what appears to be continual staff problems, has seen its profits slump by 20%, to 319m euros, in the first quarter of its 2018/9 financial year. Lower fares, higher oil prices and pilot costs have all been blamed for the drop. However, the airline reaffirmed its forecast for an annual profit of between 1.25-1.35bn euros, but down from a record 1.45bn in the year to 31st March. Ryanair said traffic grew 7% to 37.6m, despite more than 2,500 flight cancellations, through airtraffic-control staff shortages and strikes. The carrier said fares could drop during its key summer period, because of high competition and unusually hot weather in Northern Europe, as well as uncertainty caused by a series of strikes. Ancillary revenue, including reserved seating and priority boarding services, accounted for 30% of total revenue in the first quarter. But EU-261 “right-to-care” costs jumped 40% because of over 2,500 air-traffic-control flight cancellations. A Ryanair statement read: “While we continue to actively engage with pilot and cabin-crew unions across Europe, we expect further strikes over the peak summer period. “That’s because we are not prepared

to concede to unreasonable demands, that will compromise either our low fares or our highlyefficient model. “If these unnecessary strikes continue to damage customerconfidence and forward prices/ yields in certain country markets, we will have to review our winter schedule. “This may lead to fleet reductions at disrupted bases, and job losses in markets where competitor employees are interfering in our negotiations with our people and their unions.” The statement added: “We remain concerned by the danger of a hard (no-deal) Brexit in March 2019. “While there is a view that a 21-month transition agreement, from March 2019 to December 2020, will be implemented (and extended), recent events in the UK political sphere have added to this uncertainty, and we believe that the risk of a hard Brexit is being under-estimated.”

Now that Bel has a lot of time on her hands, Teddy persuades her to come back to the salon to rescue it from her family, who are running it into the ground. Leanne is less than impressed that Bel is back at the salon - especially since Mum Ivy-Rae (Sue Johnston) and sisters Tina (Lisa Riley) and Heidi (Vicky Myers) are waxing lyrical on how Bel is back where she belongs. Whilst Bel is busy giving the salon a makeover, Wes is doing up a kitchen for a personal trailer Lorelei (Madeleine Mantock). They make a deal: she gives him discounted training sessions and he gives her a discount on her new kitchen. Thursday 2nd August, BBC2, 21.00 Filmed over a year, with behind-the-scenes access to the CPS and West Mercia police, this film follows Senior Crown Prosecutor Eran Cutliffe as she works to build an extraordinarily complex case against a network of people - both inside and outside prisons - who are using drone technology to exploit a captive market. Drugs are big business in prisons. On the inside they can can fetch four times their street value, and serving time can become a business opportunity for the king pin convicts who rule their prison wings. Although prisoners don’t have access to funds themselves, family members can pay off the debts their drug-addicted loved ones are racking up on the inside. But to prosecute the offenders, police need evidence of who’s involved on the inside - and who’s flying the packages in. This film follows the investigation and prosecution of an astonishingly prolific criminal gang who are using drones to deliver drugs direct to cell windows at prisons across the UK. Police uncover evidence revealing the precision and frequency of drugs deliveries made by this audacious gang. CCTV footage outside and inside prison helps the Prosecution team to piece together who is involved and establish the role of each person within the conspiracy. How the gang is getting paid for the drugs is a conundrum for Eran and the team, but “following the money” eventually yields dividends. With insights behind the scenes at court, we see how deals are made and the tensions between gang members charged together in a conspiracy. The Prosecutors is a co-production between Gold Star Productions and The Open University.

The Five Billion Pound Super Sewer Tuesday 31st July, BBC2, 21.00

In this third and final episode of the series, tunneling in central London finally begins. To complete the 16-mile main section of the super sewer, four bespoke tunnelling machines have been designed, and work is underway to prepare for their launch. In Battersea, one of the most strategically important sites on the project, the team must assemble the £15m tunnel boring machines on site. The 100-metre-long, nine-metre-diameter machines have been stripped down into component parts and sent from the manufacturer in France. Now the team has just three months to put together the 900 tonne jigsaws, before lowering them 60 metres into the ground, to begin tunnelling in earnest. Ahead of the machines setting off, the opening section of the tunnel in Battersea has to be burrowed by excavators and reinforced with spray concrete lining to prevent it collapsing. The team is on a tight two-month schedule, but when their tunnellers hit the 52 million-year-old compressed rock of the Upper Shelley Beds, progress is in peril. On the Thames, there’s a much-needed boost for the tug and barge industry, as super sewer project managers commit to moving 90 percent of waste material from the tunnels by river - and that means opportunities for ambitious crew who are looking to make a step up. But the mammoth engineering effort of the super sewer team isn’t good news for everyone on the Thames. The bright yellow amphibious ‘Duck Tours’ vehicles that take tourists through the city centre are forced off the river, as engineers need to take over the river bank they use to launch.

Elizabeth obtains a tonic designed to induce an early labour, hoping to persuade George that Valentine is his child once and for all - but the Warleggans’ rift is plain as they return to Cornwall. Ross returns to Cornwall to mend things with Demelza, realising he killed Adderley because he could not kill Hugh. Morwenna seeks out Drake and this time Elizabeth does not seek to intervene - but when George returns home to find Morwenna with Elizabeth in Trenwith, he banishes Morwenna from the estate. Spurred by George’s ferocity, Elizabeth takes her potion and a painful labour commences. Dwight is on hand, but when Ross hears of Elizabeth’s continuing ailment he rides immediately to Trenwith...

Recovered from his self-doubt, Louis (George Blagden) is resolute in the path he must forge. He pushes Philippe (Alex Vlahos) to accept that a new life in the colonies is not the solution to offer his unmasked “prisoner”, and that a crackdown on all Protestants will ultimately bring unity to France. Resentment continues to grow as a result of the king’s plans. A dispirited Philippe returns to bad behaviour and Chevalier is spurred to take a stand. Marchal’s (Tygh Runyan) doubts about the king’s authority lead him to a dangerous decision. Cardinal Leo (Ken Bones) is still putting pressure on Louis. The Infanta Isabella (Benedita Pereira) arrives at Versailles: if the king marries her, he will unite France and Portugal. If Louis refuses, he risks excommunication from the Vatican. Will this result in another loveless royal marriage?

Hairy Bikers’ Mediterranean Adventure e c i o BBC2, 19:00 ch

The bikers continue their journey. This time, they are in mainland France, in Provence, and they begin their journey in Marseille, one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, where the population is as diverse as the Mediterranean itself. They meet Moroccan-born Fatima, who runs a welcome centre where recent immigrants can cook and eat together. The quality of the light in this part of France is such that it has always attracted artists to the region. Dave is a keen artist and, wanting to follow in the footsteps of the impressionists, they visit L’Estaque, a charming waterside community where the seaside snacks are legend. As they travel westwards, it becomes clear that one of the biggest influences here is that of the Romans. They explore the ancient aqueduct of the Pont du Gard, and in the city of Nimes they meet a local food historian and enthusiast for Roman cuisine to find out what constituted Roman-style gastronomy.

The Real Marigold Hotel BBC1, 21:00

A group of celebrities travel to Udaipur in India to test retirement there. Selina Scott, Susan George, Stephanie Beacham, Ian and Janette Tough (aka the Krankies), Syd Little, Peter Dean, Bob Champion and Stanley Johnson arrive at their new home in Udaipur. First-time curry eater Bob struggles to adjust to the Indian diet, and the Krankies find dealing with the realities of living in India unsettling. Stanley embraces his first few days, swimming alongside the locals and throwing himself into the challenge with good humour, alongside Syd, who enjoys immersing himself into the local way of life. Selina, who is used to living on her own, finds the group-living arrangements quite a test. Some of the group head to Jodphur, where Bob visits one of India’s oldest polo clubs, and they also visit the world-famous Mehrangarh Fort, which astounds Selina and Stanley. Meanwhile, Stephanie, Syd and Peter visit one of the oldest ashrams in the region.

French villagers are ‘too rich to be taxed’ A TINY French village has been told to stop charging its residents council and property tax… because it has riches galore! Le Perthus, which straddles the French-Spanish border in the Pyrenees, and houses just 586 residents, was found to have a surplus of £1m-plus in its Council coffers. It earns a mammoth £700,000 a year from parking alone, with French bargain-hunters leaving their cars on one side of the village, then walking across the border to buy cheaper goods in the Spanish area. The sum, amounting to nearly £1,200 a year, per resident, is so great, and Council outlays so little, that state auditors have urged village officials to abandon local taxes. This is because the Council “has an abundance of resources that are not being used”.

Discount stores, selling the likes of alcohol, tobacco and perfume at considerably cheaper prices, because of the differences in taxes, have shot up on the Spanish side of the road. Some examples of products where savings can be made include a pack of cigarettes, which costs, on average, up to eight euros on the French side, and about five euros on the Spanish side A litre bottle of Smirnoff vodka is 18 euros in France,

against 10 euros, just yards away over the border. And a standard loaf of bread, just 20 cents in Spain, can cost up to three euros in France. The Office for National Statistics says France has higher prices for tobacco, alcohol and clothing than in Spain, where all of those products cost less, compared with EU averages. It means that Le Perthus, by virtue of its location,

Rhinos just don’t come much older

has become a magnet for French shoppers, who pay to park-up while they browse discount stores. According to the Daily Telegraph, Occitanie Audit Office chief André Pezziardi, said: “We concluded that local taxation should be reduced to zero for Council and property taxes, because the contributions of citizens must have a quid pro quo, and that, of course, is expenditure.” Disagreements at Council

level over the budget meant that the local authority spent less than £5,000 of the £240,000 available for public facilities last year. Le Perthus village Mayor Marie-Hélène Ruart-Lucquin said that opposition councillors had blocked plans to invest in the likes of a medical centre and children’s play park. She “understood” the auditoffice findings, but she was “disgusted” by the prospect that future investments might be affected, and “could not accept the recommendations”. While some locals are overjoyed by the proposal, others said divisions in the local Council were holding up progress in the village. One resident, Marie, said: “The entire Council is against the Mayor,” meaning that all her proposals are being blocked. She added: “They’re messing up the whole village. There’s no more money for the school. Last year, the teacher struggled to pay for the school trip. It’s all wrong.”

Irate diner wins claim, but he is paid in coins

THE skeleton of an extinct breed of rhinoceros, believed to date back over 160,000 years, has been found in the Barcelona province of Castelldefels. The Stephanorhinus Hundsheimensis, similar to the African black rhino, was discovered by Barcelona University’s Quartenary Research Group (GRQSERP). Typically, it lived in open spaces and was an extremely fast runner. And the newly-discovered rhino, about seven years old, still had some of its milk teeth! It was unearthed in what is known as the Rhinoceros Cave, where other rhino bones were found in 2015 during an ongoing, archaeological excavation. The new specimen is believed to have fallen into the grotto and died while trapped there, because it would not have

been its natural habitat. Two front legs, the ribs, part of the spinal column and the skull with both jaws, have all been dug up intact. Castelldefels’ Rhinoceros Cave is a huge dig, which covers an extremely long period of prehistoric eras, with findings dating from 80,000 to 200,000 years old, most of which are really diverse, well-preserved and abundant. Remains of several types of animals, from many geographical eras, spotted in the cave, have given historians plenty of valuable

information about life in the wild tens, or even hundreds of thousands of years ago. A young elephant skeleton was found there in 2012, and two young rhinos in 2015. It appears that the cave, in the Garraf area, became a natural trap for many species of fauna, especially the extremely young and inexperienced animals who fell into it. The latest findings, which will remain in the cave all through the summer, will then be removed for studying by the GRQSERP team.

A LEGAL settlement, amounting to £745 against a Gibraltar hotel, following a customer’s complaint, was paid with bags of English coins …of all denominations! Martyn Brown, who booked the hotel for a 10-strong party’s New Year’s Eve celebration, challenged the owners

for “misrepresentation of goods”, claiming the celebrations were a “nightmare”. A case was launched by the Gibraltar legal arbitration court and the settlement was reached. But an angry Mr Brown said: “After over 30 years of patronage there, the manager has barred my wife. “This will not stand. I will return this excessivelyheavy bag of coins and demand a cheque, which is how the hotel should have paid me in the first place.”

yourself in hands Deadly Put of this super-surgeon painkiller may be regulated

THE British-banned painkiller Nolotil, which has claimed the lives of countless expats, is facing nationwide regulation. The move comes after a campaigner produced a suitcase full of case-studies at a high-level meeting with four health chiefs, from Spain’s top medicationgoverning body. Cristina Garcia del Campo, (pictured) who has been investigating Nolotil tirelessly for the last seven months, said officials from the Agencia Española de Medicamentos y Productos Sanitarios (AEMPS) were “really

PEDRO Cavadas, the Valencia-based “super surgeon”, has reconstructed the base of a tetraplegic patient’s spine, successfully.

receptive”. She added: “They are definitely going to stop it for people from this era, but they need to decide the best way to do it.”

It means that Wilmer Arias can move his upper body for the first time since he was nine years old. Tragically, his backbone broke away from his pelvis following a serious accident, involving a gun, when he was a child. Wilmer has been paralysed from the neck down since

the accident. And, for the last few years, he has been bedridden because of complications to his lumbar region. After an operation at the hospital in Manises, the nearest town to Valencia airport, the young man, from Guatemala, originally, is now back in a wheelchair, and grinning broadly. He is able to move his hands and arms, which is a hugely-improved outcome, compared with his previous situation. Incredibly, Dr Cavadas used a foot bone to connect the spine to the pelvis.

The surgeon has hit the headlines several times in the last 15 years, after reimplanting hands, entire arms, feet, legs above the knee, and even faces! In March, a marine from the US Navy lost his hand in an accident at his base in Cartagena (Murcia), while on board a submarine. He was flown directly to Manises, where an off-duty Cavadas scrubbed up in minutes and set to work. The hand was refitted and the marine is able to move it again. In in fact, he is expected to have the full use of it, eventually.

Royal treats galore for Obama family IT was the perfect, cultural, Spanish tour for overseas’ visitors: a day in the Prado Museum, a day in the Reina Sofia, viewing Picasso’s famous Guernica and Velazquez’ Las Meninas… and then a night watching flamenco. Add in meetings with Penelope Cruz, the country’s most famous actress, together with film director Pedro Almodovar, not to mention Spain’s King Felipe and his new Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez, and it proved the ideal scenario for former US President Barack Obama. The itinerary was all part of a planned, two-week sojourn, taken by Obama

and his family this month. Obama was joined by wife Michelle and daughters Malia, 20, and Sacha, 17, for much of the tour, which also included a climatechange conference in

Portugal, and a leadership event in Madrid. His Spanish-speaking daughters have taken a number of trips to Spain in recent years, including holidays in Mallorca,

as well as Marbella and Ronda. This time, they saw a lot of the capital, after attending the Girona wedding of tech tycoon Elon Musk’s brother.

In particular, they had a private tour of the Reina Sofia museum, conducted by King Felipe, where they took in various Picasso and Dali paintings, before spending a couple of hours the next day at the Prado, in Madrid. The following night, they headed to El Pardo, a village near the capital, where they watched flamenco star Pitingo, alongside Spanish icons Penelope Cruz and Pedro Almodovar. Oscar-winner Cruz shared a snap of herself with Michelle and Pedro on Instagram, saying: “What a pleasure and honour it has been for Pedro and I to meet the most inspiring couple.” Also in attendance was close friend James Costos, the former US ambassador to Spain, with whom they later travelled to Mallorca for a few days of relaxation.

from Motorworld

WHEN you first make a move to a foreign country, there are always many things that you need to consider, depending on your personal circumstances. These include properties, schools and work, not forgetting transport, which mainly involves a car. In the UK, those old enough to drive usually have a car of their own, or use of that of their parents/grandparents, or other family members. Of course, they want the same in their new home. So here we will explain some tips, and the pitfalls to avoid, to get the best out of your money and choice. Cars Most people will have done their research before

33 CW

Hints and tips for buying cars

moving a family over here. However, all too often, they won’t have factored in the higher costs of second-hand cars. A vehicle that may cost you £2,500 in the UK is likely to be double that, or more. Buying a second-hand car can be fraught with disasters if you don’t know where to go, or how the system works. In general, it’s not a good idea to buy a car from the side of the road, for many reasons. Quite often, the car for sale is not owned by the person advertising it, and it’s highly probable that it may not be transferable into your name, because of embargos (debts) which go with it. These debts are, sometimes, relatively small, eg a couple of years’ outstanding rodaje (road tax). Whilst the amounts are substantially

lower than those in the UK, they can often be hundreds of euros, adding to the cost of the car, unexpectedly. The method of taking legal ownership of the car in Spain involves a fair amount of paperwork being signed and presented. Tax has to be paid to Hacienda (the tax office) of 5.5% of the official valuation (not necessarily the amount you will be paying for the car), along with costs at Tráfico (Spanish equivalent of the DVLA), and any administration charges incurred for instructing someone to do this on your behalf. Unless you are going to visit Santa Cruz yourself, with a translator in tow, then only Official Tráfico Collaborators can do this on your behalf. It sounds scary and confusing, but it

doesn’t have to be, if you take some simple steps. Time and time again we tell people, when buying a car privately, to never ever part with any money for the purchase, without having a debt check (similar to a HPI check in the UK). For a reasonable cost, Motorworld can do this for you, quickly, potentially saving you thousands of euros. Insurance Insurance for a car works differently in Spain, because it’s the car that’s insured, not the driver. For people under 25, who have not long held a full licence (normally, it has to be a minimum of two years, but each company has different rules), then the task of obtaining insurance can be difficult and costly, although not, usually,

anywhere near as expensive as in the UK. However, on the plus side, you can use your no-claims bonus here, provided you are able to provide the relevant documentation required by the individual companies. For people over 25, obtaining cover is much easier, providing they hold a full and clean licence. Prices are sometimes considerably less than the same cover in the UK, but, on occasion, more, a lot depending on the car and the company you chose. We advise you to seek information and advice from a reputable, legal company, whether this is for the purchase of a car, or obtaining insurance quotes. Buyer beware, as they say, and be prepared to walk away if you have any doubts.

Piles or bowel cancer?

By Val Sainsbury EXPERTS have warned that bowelcancer symptoms could be confused with piles, the common health condition.

Every 15 minutes, one Brit is delivered the life-changing diagnosis that they have bowel cancer. In the UK, the deadly disease claims the lives of more than 40 people each day, and is the country’s second-biggest cancer killer. Piles, also known as haemorrhoids, affect roughly half the population, and, generally, do not have serious health complications. They cause swellings containing enlarged blood vessels, found inside or around the bottom. But doctors are telling us that people may be mistaking the warning signs of cancer for piles, which can be easily treated. Discomfort when passing

stools, itchy red lumps, and spotting or bleeding from the back passage are common signs of piles. But these tell-tale signs, including unexplained weight loss and abdominal pain, could also be an indicator of cancer. While haemorrhoids are more common in the over 45s, and can be caused by being obese or overweight, bowel cancer is most common in men and women over 50, and people with a diet high in red or processed meat can be more at risk. Persistent changes in bowel habits, including constipation and diarrhoea, are symptoms of bowel cancer, while a lump hanging down outside the anus, which may need to be pushed back after passing a stool, can be an indicator of haemorrhoids. Other symptoms of bowel cancer can include unexplained tiredness, dizziness or breathlessness, abdominal pain and bleeding from the bottom. Experts advise patients to look at their stools. While a few drops of bright, fresh blood in stools can be caused by piles, dark red or black stools could be a sign of bowel cancer, and people are advised to contact their doctor, immediately.

People who experience a change in their bowel habit, lasting more than three weeks, should also seek medical advice. The symptoms of haemorrhoids may clear up within a few days, and can be improved by making simple dietary changes, using creams or taking a laxative. Doctors can also diagnose haemorrhoids using a simple examination of your back passage, and sometimes refer you to a colorectal specialist for diagnosis and treatment. If a doctor believes a person has bowel cancer, they could have their abdomen

and rectum examined and be referred to a specialist. Causes of haemorrhoids include constipation or diarrhoea, pregnancy, and regularly lifting heavy objects. Figures by BMI Healthcare reveal that 55% of people living in London would not be confident about the common symptoms of bowel cancer, and only 44% of the UK population are aware that eating red or processed meat increases the risk of bowel cancer. Sharron Davies MBE, UK Olympic medallist, campaigns for greater awareness of the risk factors

surrounding the disease in the UK. “Bowel cancer is a dreadful disease, and affects a worrying amount of Britons,” she said. “Lifestyle factors, such as exercising regularly and eating healthily, can contribute significantly to reducing the risks. People need to be more aware of how a few changes could make a real difference.” While the symptoms of piles and bowel cancer have some similarities, bowel cancer can develop whether you have piles or not. Experts urge that you seek advice from your GP, if the symptoms get worse.

One pup escaped from the box and could not be caught, and, despte a long search, it had vanished. Three days later, another Live Arico supporter spotted a lone, small pup, running in the forest. It took three days to catch

A real eye-opener By Tenerife Sunshine

It is quite awkward for us, living on an island, or as some put it, “A rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean”.

But life is too short not to discover this wonderful world in which we live, or, as someone once said: “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” We are fortunate to have two, fantastic airports here in Tenerife, and we are also supported by two interisland ferry companies, all of which offer a resident’s discount to those holding the correct paperwork if travelling within Spanish territory, and even closer to home. And don’t forget the fabulous bus service. We also have a huge influx of cruise-liners into Santa Cruz port. But, unfortunately for us residents, it is not as simple as embarking and disembarking as we would wish. And, even though the majority of international cruise companies do dock here, there is only a handful which allow us to get on or off!

So we’re looking at travelling right here. Don’t try to kid me that you have been everywhere on this island because there is so much to discover here. I wish I had the time to stay away from work and home to do some exploring. The beauty of Tenerife is that if you need a quick

escape, a trip to the North, namely Puerto de la Cruz, seems like a mini-break to another country. It’s a real trip back in time, with the original Tenerife holiday resort’s historic tales, grand hotels, and, usually, an alternative climate. Puerto de la Cruz can

deliver a combination of true Canarian culture and charm. You can live the lifestyle, coupled with all the facilities of a holiday resort. Puerto is a complete contrast to the purposebuilt resorts of the South and West of Tenerife. Cobbles, traditional restaurants and cafés are popular trademarks of this former fishing village, where life still revolves around the picturesque harbour, as well as the fantastic lido. As I’ve already said, Puerto features a completely different climate, and is often, to the shock of those who have only ever visited the South, described as GREEN! With many local attractions, some ticketed and some free, there is always something going on. But to sit by the lido and watch the world pass you by is an absolute treat. Many hotels, now a little tired, which is usually reflected in the price, still tend to provide the quality, high-standard service. Really old school! One gentleman who sticks out in my mind used to

be the receptionist in the Martianez. How I loved that hotel, and I retain so many great memories of our short breaks in Puerto, whether it be with friends, to celebrate Christmas and birthdays, or romantic. I loved this hotel. It was stuck in a Sixties’ timewarp, but the service was impeccable. So it was a joy to bump into him working at the H10 Bahia Principe just a few years ago. But, alas, no more Martianez, so I won’t dwell on it. Instead, let’s have a look at what is on offer now. From one-key dwellings to five-star luxury spas, there is something to suit all budgets. From room-only and selfcatering, right through to all-inclusive, they are all there! But it would be a shame to visit this wonderful town on an all-inclusive deal when there are so many restaurants - hidden gems - just waiting to be discovered. Trick the kids with this healthy dessert IF you want a snack or dessert, puddings are popular grab-andgo items. However, if you frequently buy pudding at a supermarket or grocery, what you will see in the ingredients list will shock you. Vegetable oils, chemical compounds and artificial flavourings are just some of the harmful and unhealthy ingredients in shop-bought pudding. The good news is you can still enjoy dessert without exposing yourself to various health risks. Check out this chocolate avocado pudding. Not only does this recipe call for wholesome, all-natural ingredients, but every spoonful also provides you with a vital health boost. Also, it's a crafty way of introducing nutritious desserts to children, who tend to reject anything that's too healthy! Ingredients: (Serving size - 2) 3 large avocados, soft and ripe Âź cup high-quality cacao powder 3-6 tbsp coconut milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 tsp coconut oil 2 tbsp raw honey Procedure:

Combine avocado, cacao powder, coconut milk, vanilla, coconut oil and honey in a blender. Blend on high for 1 minute, or until smooth. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. This pudding is indulgent, and guilt-free. Avocados are perfect for this pudding recipe because they're sweet, but contain low amounts of fructose. These brightgreen fruits are rich in healthy fats which help to keep your cholesterol levels in a healthy range, lower your risk for heart disease and allow your body to efficiently absorb various, fat-soluble nutrients. Also present in avocados are potent, cancer-fighting

carotenoids, or plant compounds. According to research published in the Nutrition Journal, avocados work well if you're overweight, because eating one-half of a fresh avocado helps with satiety, making you feel full for a longer period of time. While it's true that you're better off without the excess sugar and artificial ingredients found in some chocolate, it doesn't mean that you should entirely avoid it. If you look hard enough, using high-quality, organic cocoa powder or dark chocolate with a higher cacao concentration, for this pudding, can be beneficial. Higher cacao levels could

prevent free radical oxidation, limit feelings of pain and anxiety, boost mental alertness, generate higher physical energy levels and shield the brain after a stroke. The plant compounds present in dark chocolate, on the other hand, have antioxidant and antiinflammatory capabilities that can lead to a lower risk of heart diseases and strokes. Meanwhile, using coconut oil and coconut milk (made by grinding coconut meat and diluting with plain water) in your recipes, instead of vegetable oils and pasteurised milk from confined cows, won't just make the pudding more

flavourful, but will provide additional health benefits, as well. Both coconut oil and milk have medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) that are easier to break down and digest, and do not need special enzymes to be metabolised. These MCFAs are also sent to the liver, where they're immediately converted into energy, instead of being stored as fat. Apart from that extra dose of sweetness, raw honey can be good for your health, too. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it acts as a demulcent, a substance that can relieve mouth or throat irritation by developing a protective film. Other studies have also shown that raw honey could help to treat coughs just as well as over-thecounter cough medicine. If you have allergies, a teaspoon of locallyproduced, raw honey can help solve the problem. This is because raw honey introduces a small amount of allergens into your body, triggering the immune system, thereby developing a natural immunity against this allergen. Raw honey can also be used as a wound treatment because of its antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidant capabilities.

Copa Mahou trophy Spot-on for glory By Colin Kirby

Las Palmas 0 CD Tenerife 0 (CDT win 5-3 on penalties)

CD Tenerife update

GET that man an armchair! Tenerife keeper Dani Hernandez had a quiet night, with just one shot to trouble him from hosts Las Palmas in the Copa Mahou on Saturday.

The game at Maspalomas, in the south of Gran Canaria, finished 0-0 with Tenerife taking the trophy thanks to a 5-3 penalty win. Las Palmas had brought in eight new players to replace their relegation flops, and they looked like a bunch of strangers. But Tenerife, tenacious and well-organised in defence, as well as being positive and creative in midfield and attack, proved worthy winners. Bryan Acosta ran the show again for Tenerife, even though his sixth-minute free-kick went over the cluster of both teams’ players in front of goal, to be scooped up by home keeper Perez. His next free-kick, a few minutes later, was suitably adjusted, giving Malbasic a half-chance on goal. Set-pieces are just part of Acosta’s armoury, and his corner needed a full-length punch away from Perez. Luis Milla was on good form, prompting some of Tenerife’s best moves, while on the left, Montañes was showing that he had more to offer than last season’s lengthy injury

allowed him. The best chance of the first half was a well-worked throw-in from Luis Perez on the right, via Acosta to Juan Villar. His shot clipped the bar and fell for Malbasic, who shot

straight at the keeper. Luis Milla carved open another inviting chance for Malbasic, and this time it took two defenders to close him down. It was good stuff from Tenerife. Luis Perez again picked out

Villar, who cut inside and released a curling shot that just cleared the woodwork. All Las Palmas could offer in reply was a hopeful cross, plucked out of the air by Dani just before the break. The home side needed to show a lot more enterprise, and they did get better in the second half. But they were still way off the pace. Acosta juggled a loose ball but fired wide, before the first changes of the match, on the hour. Suso, Joao, and Underbarrena took to the pitch with Alberto, Villar, with Montañes departing. It interrupted Tenerife’s flow, and Las Palmas managed to string a few moves together. Aveldaño made a strong clearance

from a home corner, and, a few minutes later, Las Palmas wasted a free-kick with a blast over the bar. Time for more changes: Juan Carlos Real, Raul Camara and Jorge Saenz were the 74th-minute arrivals, with Luis Milla, Aveldaño and Acosta taking a well-earned rest as their hosts made a double swap. Joao left a defender behind as he looked for a wide way through, but he had to settle for the ball going wide. It was kind of the Maspalomas groundsman to activate the on-pitch sprinkler system, to give the players a cool dowsing with five minutes left; or maybe it was a good oldfashioned malfunction. With the cup game being just one leg this year, a late home shot over the bar left the game goal-less, and penalties were needed to determine who would lift the cup. Tenerife were immaculate with their five spot-kicks, from Milla, Ruiz, Juan Carlos, Joao, and Suso, and keeper Dani ensured they got their hands on the trophy by reaching the opening penalty from Fidel. League clashes between the old enemies will be a world apart from this low-key game. But, in the meantime, a little bragging and local pride will keep the derby embers smouldering.

Gloves off for Madrid signing? WHAT better way to relax, after being voted best goalkeeper at the 2018 World Cup, than a holiday in Tenerife? Quite handy, too, if you have a big decision to mull over, like Belgium’s Thiabaut Cortois, whose big stage heroics have made him the mostsought-after keeper in the world. The Chelsea stopper, who has had an offer to join Real Madrid, has been giving it serious thought, in between showing his family and friends around the South of the island. It was nice to see that Russia’s Golden Gloves winner made time to present awards at the Canarian Youth Golf Championships, at Golf Costa Adeje. Thiabaut’s former partner, Marta Dominguez, is from Tenerife, so he is no stranger to our shores.

Lively Gaffers home in GAFFERS leapfrogged The Loch-In ‘A’ by winning the trebles when they visited San Blas, going home with a 5-3 league victory in a match that could have gone either way. Another close game was played at Marilyns ‘A’, who welcomed the Suters 20:30 Crew league leaders. After some great darts by Sam, with a 180, and Lee’s 116 and 104 check-outs, the visitors triumphed 5-3 to maintain their lofty position. Pas O Nadas ‘A’ kept up their unbeaten start as they beat local rivals Phoenix Bar by the closest margin, thanks to 180s from Luc and Daddy Cool, the latter with a 15-dart leg. They then won the team game to clinch victory against their opponents. who fought all the way. The Pub are in third spot after a 7-1 win against Picasso’s, who just couldn’t compete with the excellent level of darts from Grizzly and his boys. Palms Pool Bar visited Sandys and pinched the trebles and a share of the points in the bril-

liant 4-4 draw. Mad Hatters had some super scores and fabulous finishes at Legends, which were good enough to give them a 5-3 win. Ourplace Playboys hosted The Red Devils and proved to be too good on the night with a 6-2 success. Emerald Lounge ‘B’ find themselves top of Division 2 after their 8-0 demolition of Ourplace Playgirls. But Scruffy Lads are on their coat-tails, following an equally-impressive 8-0 win against visiting Nauta Nomads, which leaves them just three points behind in second place. Clouseau’s thought they had picked up a win at home against Ourplace Breakaways, but top-form Dylan carried the visitors to a 4-4 draw, courtesy of the trebles win. Naughty Nautas welcomed Pas O Nadas ‘B’ and lost 6-2, and it was “well-played” from the visitors to Katie, who wants to be as good as her Daddy Cool one day. Emerald Lounge picked up useful points at Sundowners, where Laura

secured her first win of the season and her team earned a 6-2 win to take back to San Blas. Finally, a close contest was decided at the Waterfall when The LochIn Bullseyes triumphed 5-3, after winning the 701 game to win 5-3, and keep up their title aspirations.

EXTRA-TIME San Andres battle has moved into extra-time W E I G H T L I F TING: Acoran Hernandez, who is going from strength to strength, has his sights set on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after lifting the Spanish national title at the weekend. The 28-year-old, from Los Silos, is approaching his peak form, and says he has learned to deal with the pressure of the big competitions.

LADIES’ FOOTBALL: Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife begin pre-season training on Wednesday (1st August) and now know what they are aiming for. Spain’s Premier League fixtures came out this week, and they open with Real Sociedad at home (San Isidro) on Sunday 9th September at noon.

IMAGINE your football team going four years without a home game! That’s the infuriating position CD San Andres, of the Preferente League, have been left in. Their Campo de Valle Las Huertas ground has been isolated by re-designs of roads into the small settlement, beyond Santa Cruz and just short of Las Teresitas beach. But enough is enough! Last Saturday, more than 200 club supporters, along with players, blockaded the

main road that runs along the coast, stopping traffic between Las Teresitas beach and Santa Cruz. The club was formed 88

years ago, officially, and its proud tradition is viewed as an important part of the community. The road reorganisation was prompted by a series of big waves, sweeping across the main access road, but repairs were supposed to have been a temporary solution. Their home games have been played at the nearby grounds of Valleseco and Maria Jimenez, but there’s no place like home! A second demonstration was planned for this Sunday, but Santa Cruz Council have agreed to a meeting with the club’s representatives, to try to resolve matters.

CD Tenerife

Fixtures mark road ahead

BIRTHDAYS, anniversaries and even weddings can now be squeezed in around CD Tenerife’s fixture list, which was released on Tuesday. Like an English train timetable, some finer points won’t be confirmed until the last moment. But the Second Division campaign definitely starts on 18th August at Nastic… unless it’s the day after! You guessed it: television

calls the tune, as always, and will have the final say on dates and kick-off times. Things have been complicated this season for Tenerife because the Santa Cruz pitch has been re-laid, which is why Tenerife are away again the following weekend, at Almeria, and their first home game is on 2nd September, against relegated big boys Deportivo. The most sought-after dates were the local derby fixtures against Las Palmas, from Gran Canaria. The away trip is on 16th

December, with the home game, at the back end of the season, on 5th May 2019. But lots of work has to be completed before the league kick-off, and Tenerife are currently training for a week at the Marbella Football Centre. Last night (Thursday), they played Dubai’s Al Wasl, and on Sunday they play Almeria, to be shown live from 6.30pm on TV Canaria. The next chance for fans to see the team on Tenerife soil is next Saturday (4th Aug), in a friendly encounter against Ibarra at El Fraile,

CD Marino

less than 15 minutes by car from Los Cristianos. Tenerife received a major boost this week with a 12-million- euro investment from the Cabildo to transform their training facility in Geneto, near the North Airport. Work will start in October and is scheduled to be completed by 2021. Multiple pitches are already there, but not a lot else, and

the transformation will turn it into a state-of-the-art training camp. The club have made no further signings, and the departure of Serbian striker Felip Malbasic hasn’t happened. Club President Miguel Concepcion underlined the stark, financial reality that no more players will be coming in until others leave the club.

Blue Tail

Busy Blues geared up Highest praise for highest run! IT’S official! Tenerife’s bone-aching, muscle-sapping endurance challenge, Cajamar Bluetrail, is a genuine awardwinner.

FRESH and raring to go… that’s the CD Marino squad as they look forward to a new season in their Tercera Division (Spain’s 4th-tier) group.

The club have announced a series of friendlies, in which returning coach Zeben Hernandez can blend in the new arrivals with last season’s players, and a few youngsters from within the

club’s huge development system. Tomorrow (Saturday), the senior team play the B side at noon in the Anexo stadium, across the road from their Las Americas home. Feel free to pop in, because it’s open-house, with no charge. Next Saturday, Marino face Atletico Victoria in North Tenerife, at 6.30 pm. But there’s a shorter trip on Wednesday, 8th August, to Valle San Lorenzo for the clash against the local team, with an 8pm kick-off.

For a different venue, check out the game against Tacoronte at Tenerife Top Training, in La Caleta, at noon on Saturday, 11th August, and Marino’s Island travels continue with a trip to Candelaria to play La Orotava on Friday, 17th August, at 6pm. The pre-season programme ends with a tough home test against Las Palmas B on Sunday, 19th August, at noon. League fixtures should be drawn in the next few days.

At a ceremony in Puerto de la Cruz, CIT (Centre of Tourist Initiatives for Puerto de la Cruz) was presented with an award by the International Trail Running Association, for combining sport, tourism, and sustainability, all in one event. The latest race, last month, attracted more than 2,000 participants, over a range of routes, featuring different distances and various challenges. They run from the Reto, of just 1.2km, all the way to the daddy of them all, the Ultra, which is a monstrouslysteep route of 10km, from the coast to 3,555m high,

in Mount Teide’s national park. The challenge attracts runners from all around the world, and shows off the diverse landscapes and views that Tenerife can offer. Great care is taken to ensure that the routes do not damage any of the areas they pass through. Plans are already being made for the June 2019 Bluetrail, and inscriptions will be open from 1st September at www. tenerifebluetrail.com The website and sign-up are available in a choice of languages.
