Where the charity money goes

DURING its 10-year span, Helping Hands has contributed to many worthwhile causes, including the following: *Purchase of wheelchairs and disabled beds for individuals *Ongoing support for Centro Guaidyl’s underprivileged children, including a project to fund their sporting ambitions, and education, as well as afterschool activities, and all their summer plans *The funding of five children to participate in Taekwondo Club Deportivo Kyocha *Supporting Lucian Panesco’s cancer treatment *Funding five under-privileged children to participate in Tenerife’s Estrellas Theatre School and Ritmania Dance School *Donation to Fundacion Sonrisa, for Down’s Syndrome children and adults *Donation to CEE Disabled School in Guargacho to support children with cerebral palsy *Helping ASLA, a project to support disabled children and adults at Arona’s El Mojon Hospital *Happy to Help: supporting fellow-charities with individuals in need *Pelucha Project, to build a children’s cancer-care unit in Candelaria Hospital. *Supporting Aaron Tyler Bannister, who suffers from the incurable Duchenne disease.

mighty, 67km Bluetrail run, between Vilaflor and Santa Cruz. The money will purchase a special hoist to help the courageous youngster in and out of the swimming pool, enabling him to have physiotherapy in safety. And it really did make the training, and the agonising run itself, even more worthwhile for the couple, who own a successful sports shop in CC Fanabe Plaza. When Liz Montague, never one to miss a fund-raising chance for her children’s charity, Helping Hands, discovered that Darren and Maria were tackling the tortuous challenge for the first time, she persuaded them to collect cash for the youngster. In fact, she has pledged that her charity will do everything possible to ease young Aaron’s plight. A delighted Liz said: “Thank you to all who kindly sponsored Darren and Maria Chamberlain’s huge challenge. And, most of all, a big thank-you to the couple

for such amazing support.” Aaron’s father, Carl, along with the charity’s Liz and Alanna, descended on the couple’s sports shop to thank them, and to see Aaron being presented with the cheque. Darren said: “It was so painful at times, but it helped us get through the strenuous event by knowing that every cent we earned would be going to Aaron. Liz runs a fantastic charity, and we are already great supporters.” Helping Hands was cofounded by Liz in August 2008 to help needy youngsters, and their parents. And, over the past 10 years, the charity has donated a total of 242,000 euros, including this year’s 35,000-euro tally so far, to worthwhile ventures. “We have more fund-raising surprises in the pipeline,” said Liz. “But nothing will beat Aaron’s thumbsup for Darren and Maria. He is a beautiful child and deserves all the help he can get to fight the disease.”

Knife-boy stabs mum

NATIONAL Police in Puerto de la Cruz arrested a 16-year-old youth last Saturday because he had attacked his mother with a knife at their Los Realejos home. The violence occurred during the evening while they were in the middle of a discussion. Police were dispatched to the home after an emergency call was received, and saw that the mother had suffered cuts to her arms, although none of the wounds was life-threatening, After interviewing mum and son, the youngster was arrested and spent the night in a cell at a Puerto de la Cruz police station. The young man was charged with violent behaviour, but sources said the minor had been suffering with videogame addiction, which, they believe, could have influenced him Forensic doctors have examined him, to determine whether the minor is suffering from some type of mental illness. For this reason, the boy was transferred to a nearby hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Woman dies in crash A CRASH involving a car and a truck on Wednesday left a woman dead and two other people injured.

The incident occurred at 5.45pm, just past the Guargacho junction on the TF-655 by Km2, in the direction of Guaza. A black BMW, driven by the woman, collided head-on with the truck, and police closed the road to enable an emergency helicopter to land on the road. It carried the woman straight to hospital, but staff of the SUC (emergency services) confirmed her death, through

Hospital’s café workers’ revolt injuries, soon afterwards. Two other people were taken to Hospiten Sur by ambulance: a 43-year-old woman

with neck pains, and a man, aged 42, who had pelvic injuries. Both are in a stable condition.

CANDELARIA Hospital’s cafeteria workers, who are being taken over by a new company, are preparing a protest, unless the firm agrees to employ 46 permanent workers. The staff have issued an ultimatum: they will lock themselves up with their families in the main entrance hall, if the new boss ignores their wish. Once the bidding process for the café had been abandoned, negotiations ended on Wednesday, and it seems inevitable that the café will close on 14th August. If so, the staff will initiate

corresponding lawsuits against the Canarian Government’s Ministry of Health, as well as fulfilling their threat to the management. The new firm must take on 46 permanent café workers, of which 28 must have an important seniority, to meet an agreement of the hospital workers. Manuel Fitas, spokesman for the Base Union (SB), said: “We are waiting for a meeting with management to tell us if there is, finally, a company to handle the new service for the next five years. And we hope the conditions will be attractive.” He added: “The certain thing is that they should face the cost of an important reform.”

Canaries to eliminate IGIC on hybrids and electric cars Jobless boost slowing down THERE is some good news for employment in the Canary Islands, with the July data showing that the jobless figure fell by 1,847 people. But there are still 206,474 people out of work, which, unfortunately, indicates that employment is slowing down in the Islands, following a rapid recovery after the crisis. July’s unemployed figures fell the most in Las Palmas, a drop of 1,117 people and

1.03% less than the previous month, while they dropped by 730 people in Santa Cruz. Women occupy the most unemployment lists with 119,418, while 87,329 of men are still seeking jobs. And there are 11,754 under-25s out of work. Yet recruitment in the Canaries actually grew last month, with 81,547 new work contracts created. That’s an increase of 10,581 agreements, which is 3,425 contracts more than in previous months. But, of that figure, 9,946 were indefinite contracts.

THE Canarian Government is keen to cancel IGIC on the purchase of hybrid vehicles, whose emissions do not exceed 110gms of CO2 (carbon dioxide) per kilometre, and also ban the tax on electric vehicles and bicycles. This new regulation aims to promote a mobile fleet, more respectful of the environment, and one that favours the fight against

climate change in the archipelago. The goal is that by 2030, CO2 emissions to the atmosphere will be reduced by 40%, and that one-infour vehicles in the islands will be efficient. The intention is for the proposals to be approved before the end of the year, and Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo brought up a meaningful point. He recalled at a press conference, along with Environment Minister Nieves Lady Barreto, that this was one of her proposals during the last

national debate, which was approved unanimously. Clavijo said the bill also sought to encourage the purchase of zeroemission vehicles, which could benefit both private transport and the rent-acar sector. The Canarian President said the Islands’ mobile fleet comprised more than 1.6 million vehicles, of which, 99.8% used fossil fuels. In 2017, just 1,755 hybrid and electric vehicles were registered, which meant they didn’t even reach 0.2%. And in the case of rent-acar, in 2017, just 35 vehicles were registered.

Airports chiefs to control their colonies of wild cats AENA, the Spanish airports’ governing body, is investing 180,000 euros to help the “ethical control” of wildcat colonies in terminals across the country. The public-sector company sparked a public outrage when it levied a ban on feeding feral cats at its airports. Animal-lovers throughout the country protested that it was cruel, because the homeless cats would not be able to survive. But AENA clarified that it had introduced “controlled” feeding plans,

and its main aim was to keep them off the runways and out of hangars for their own and passengers’ safety. Now, it is seeking animal shelters to take on the job of feeding and sterilising

the cat colonies, which AENA will fund. They aim to move the cats to safer places – if possible, within shelters, although this cannot always be done because mature feral felines struggle to adapt

to living outside their ‘natural’ habitat. The cats may settle in to their new environment, but unless they are young kittens, it is unlikely they will be able to be rehomed. AENA insists it is ‘sensitive’ to feral cats’ needs and mindful of regional legislation in Madrid, Law 4/2016 of July 22 on Pet Protection, and will comply with its provisions, even outside its area of jurisdiction. This and other regional laws consider feral cats to be ‘pets’ for the purposes of welfare and protection, although they are also covered by Fauna Management rules for conservation of wild animals.

AENA has had no choice but to respond to the needs of feral cats and ensure their wellbeing, given the public pressure it has been under. The Madrid Airport Feline Management (GFAM) association, made up of airport workers, has been feeding and caring for the animals for many years. And members announced a revolt when AENA said they could be disciplined for setting up feeding stations, even though they followed regional government health guidelines and funded a trap, neuter, return (TNR) programme. A petition on Change. org netted over 110,000 signatures in support of their cause.

The Government’s extra cash to fight domestic abusers

Young people taught to combat gender violence

ONE of the free complementary courses during Adeje’s Summer University was aimed at young people, aged between 14-30.

THE Spanish Government has pledged more money for town councils to deal with the prevention, awareness and victim support of domestic violence.

The previous PP-led national government had agreed to give 20m euros to all local authorities, but new president Pedro Sánchez’s cabinet believes this sum is “very little”. Domestic-violence victims, who, statistically, are more likely to be women, “need to feel they have somewhere

to go, and to be given answers and help”, says the Government. It is likely that the sum of money set aside could be up to four times the sum agreed by the PP. In fact, Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo (pictured, centre) says councils will get around 80m euros.

Roof-fall woman breaks both legs

A WOMAN suffered two broken legs on Monday after toppling from the roof of an abandoned building near the Mirador, in the Santa Cruz area of San Andres. The incident occurred just before 4pm, and the emergency services were alerted. They were told that the woman, as yet unknown, was hit by part of the roof, which fell on top of her as she hit the ground. The fire-fighting team rescued her from the rubble, enabling the ambulance team to check her over. She suffered several fractures to both legs, but, once stabilised, she was taken to Candelaria Hospital for further treatment.

They had to reside in the borough, and they also had to be interested in becoming community volunteers, to help combat gender violence, particularly among their peers. The course, held in Adeje Youth Centre, was the second time the Council had organised this form of training, with a high satisfaction rating among the participants. The training was offered by members of the “Federacion de Asociaciones de Mujers Arena y Laurisilva”, who had been working in the area of equality and gender-violence prevention for over 20 years. The reasoning behind

the course, said Equality Councillor Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro, was “to continue with the basic training when the school term starts, developing a series of awareness-raising workshops in the borough’s secondary schools”. She added: “We believe it is fundamental that our young people are involved in training and awareness, regarding this subject matter.” The goal is that these youngsters will become a reference point in their own communities, sharing values of equality and the benefits of relationships, based on social equality. They will also help any woman who needs to escape from a situation where she is suffering gender violence. Students are also learning about the laws that apply to gender violence, and the myths that society may perpetuate etc.

NEWS IN BRIEF Missing Sarah case still open

THE head of the Canarian National Police has confirmed that the case of 14-year-old Sarah Morales, who went missing 12 years ago in Gran Canaria, is still open. Last Monday marked 12 years to the day that Sarah (pictured) went missing. The last sighting was when she left her home to go to La Ballena shopping centre in Las Palmas. Miguel Moreno, lead investigator, stressed that Sarah’s case had never been closed. Over the years, he added, there had been some information which had been investigated. But he also clarified that it had failed to yield any positive results. All data collected since her disappearance has been filed, and police are hopeful of receiving more information, to enable them to ascertain what actually happened that day.

Adeje Summer University

Thumbs-up from satisfied students ON the last day of the 2018 Adeje Summer University, as usual, participants were invited to complete a short questionnaire about the courses they attended, as well as evaluating their experience. Again, the University scored top marks, and, agreed Adeje Education Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera and the University of La Laguna (ULL) Vice-

Rector Francisco García, the overall satisfaction rating was higher than last year. In addition, students also gave a high-approval rating to changes in the modular format on offer this year. One of top-rated courses featured sign language, with courses in art, literature and the environment also popular. Interesting data was also available on the profile of students (over 700), who attended the university this year, with more than 60% saying they had

signed up to improve their general knowledge, and a further 23% to improve their CV. Some 96% of those matriculating were from Tenerife, including 34% from Adeje itself. These figures were extremely important to the local education department, because it reflected a positive reception by the people of the borough. More women than men took courses, with nearly 40% employed, 22% looking for work and 23% in full-time education.

Woman’s house-fire rescue

A WOMAN in La Laguna, whose town house caught fire in Calle Hermandad in the early hours of last Monday, was taken to hospital and diagnosed with serious smoke intoxication. The incident happened at around 6.10am and the Canarian emergency services, who were soon alerted, responded by dispatching ambulances and the fire services immediately Fire-fighters, who soon doused the flames, realised that an electrical fire, caused by an appliance, had sparked the fire, which then spread to the roof. The woman was transferred by ambulance to a nearby hospital for smoke-inhalation treatment.

Wildfire man is held

A MADRID man has been arrested on suspicion of starting a fast-moving wildfire, which raged for two weeks and forced more than 100 people to leave their homes. The Guardia Civil said the 52-year-old was believed to have started the fire, which broke out on 21st August last year, in the Leon region of La Cabrera. The blaze burned over 9,000 hectares of grass, pine, oak and shrub land. A police statement said: “The damage caused by this fire alarmed the public, affected a large area of forest, caused serious soil erosion and damaged wells ... and it also endangered the lives of people and local residents, as well as those who worked to put it out.” The suspect faces a possible jail term of up to five years, according to police.

ORCAS have been spotted off Tenerife coasts in the last week or so, and, surprisingly, some of them have attacked pilot whales in full view. Herrera Matías FontePadilla, Dean of the Canaries’ College of Biologists, said: “The unusual thing about the news is not the attack, which is normal, but that it occurred so close to the coast and, unfortunately, was seen by human beings.” It is a difficult situation for Matías Fonte, who began this role just a month ago, and who, as a youth, worked as a tourist guide in the sighting of cetaceans in the South.

In images provided by Marítima Acantilados, and a video provided by Marco Cherubino, you can see, partially, the vicious attack on two pilot whales by two killer-whale herds, comprising at least eight specimens. It took place last Saturday afternoon, about five miles from the Tenerife coast, specifically in front of Alcalá, Guía de Isora. “In the two years that I worked as a guide, I never had the opportunity to see orcas in this area,” said Fonte on Wednesday. “But it is normal for these types of predators to pass through the Canary Islands, as is the case with sharks. “When that happens, pilot whales are aware of the danger, thanks to their detection system, and that

usually justifies the sudden submersion of the group in question.” The marine biologist added: “It is not unusual for killer whales to attack pilot whales, but it happens, usually, at sea. “That’s why the novelty lies in the fact that it was so close to the coast, and more unfortunate that it had many witnesses.” The manager of Marítima Acantilado, a pioneer company in the sighting of cetaceans in the South of Tenerife, said: “We had already seen killer whales, but we never witnessed anything similar to this. “The Orcas cornered at least two pilot whales, killed them and then dismembered them, but they gave the impression of playing.”

HARD Rock Hotel Tenerife has confirmed that more guest artistes will take part in its

series between August and November, keeping the summer vibes strong, well into the autumn months.

A BRITISH fugitive, who appears on Europe’s Most-Wanted list, has been held in the southern Spanish city of Granada. David Daniel Hayes, 39, from Anglesey in Wales, is believed to be a dangerous paedophile, wanted on nine charges of sexual abuse against two children in the UK. He is also suspected of committing at least three offences in Spain, after giving private English lessons to children at his home, under a false identity. An investigation, launched in the wake of the latter claims, revealed that the name and other personal details he supplied to clients, in fact, belonged to a British expat who lives in Valencia. Investigators followed a trail of addresses, featuring

B&Bs and hostels, which were used in adverts he posted on Spanish family websites. Eventually, he was tracked down in Granada and arrested, after being watched by detectives for several days. And the results of a fingerprint test revealed his true identity. Hayes vanished after flying from Liverpool to Amsterdam in May 2015, following his release on bail, ahead of a trial concerning the alleged sex crimes. At the time, the BBC’s Crimewatch programme described him as “one of the most wanted criminals in Britain,” while North Wales Police put out a number of calls for Europe when he fled to Europe. He has been remanded in custody and will appear before the National Court in Madrid, said a Guardia Civil statement.

Waste-water neglect costs the country 12m penalty

THEY really do appear to be smart, new rubbish bins, but the 40 black metal containers, now installed in central Barcelona parks, contain bird seed, spiked with contraceptives. The local council is hoping that the measure will help to reduce the pigeon population in the Catalan capital. Until now, Barcelona City Hall has applied periodic culls, capturing and then killing the birds. But it has now decided to take a more humane, practical approach, which, it hopes, will cut numbers from around 85,000. The Council, which describes itself as “animal friendly”, unveiled its plan, calling it “a clear and decisive bid for ethical control of pigeon populations”, taking its lead from the Italian city of Genoa. City Hall hopes to reduce the population by around 20% in the first year of the

THE European Court of Justice has ordered Spain to pay a 12-million euro fine for failing, after a 12 year cut off point, to comply with a European directive on urban, waste water collection and treatment. In a 2011 judgement, the same court found that there were still 43 agglomerations (boroughs) with a population of 15,000 or more, including Arafo’s Valle de Güímar, here in Tenerife, which failed to meet EU standards.

The baby pigeons could take a long while to reappear

contraceptive scheme, with overall numbers falling by 80% in four to five years. The project will cost 250,000 euros annually, but authorities in the regional capital say it will be cheaper in the long

term than the methods used so far, while money will also be saved on cleaning those public buildings, spattered with corrosive pigeon droppings. Francesc Ximeno, Barcelona’s environmental

commissioner, said the dispensers would release maize at 8am each day, when pigeons are reportedly most hungry. Each dispenser, distributed throughout 10 districts, will feed a local pigeon colony. The maize, too large to be edible for other species, is coated with nicarbazin, which limits ovulation in females, and also affects sperm in males. City Hall officials say that pigeons are not only a nuisance to humans and animals, but “can affect health, urban mobility, public spaces and vegetation”. Last month, Catalonia’s Supreme Court accepted a claim by a former tourist guide, who said she had contracted pulmonary fi-

Yet member states were supposed to have adequate collection-and-treatment systems in place since 2001. Spain was given a 2013 deadline to comply, but the deadline expired, with 17 boroughs still discharging their waste water without proper treatment. In 2017, the EU Commission brought new action, and the Court of Justice has now fined Spain a lump sum of 12m euros, plus an 11m-euro penalty payment for every sixmonth period of delay in getting the remaining municipalities up to speed on the issue. There are still nine Spanish municipalities failing to meet the EU’s urban wastewater regulations: seven in Andalusia (Matalascañas, Alhaurín el Grande, Isla Cristina, Tarifa, Coín, Nerja and Barbate), one in Asturias (Gijón Este) and another in Valle de Güímar. But the Ecological Transition Ministry said current planning regarding water-treatment plants makes it impossible for these areas to meet the standards before 2022. The last one will be Barbate, in Cádiz province, but Ministry sources added that they were working on a new action plan to shorten that period. According to the Ministry, local authorities are in charge of this issue, “and, collaterally, the regional governments, unless there is a formal ‘national interest’ designation”, in which case it is the state. In Andalusia, for instance, four cases fall to the regional government and three to the national government. The EU will check back every six months, and the penalty will be reduced, depending on the progress made. The court also found that “the particularly long duration of the infringement constitutes an aggravating circumstance”, and noted that there had been a delay of nearly 18 years since the directive set a 2000 deadline of 31st December, for member states to have proper waste-water collectionand-treatment systems in place. brosis as a result of being exposed to pigeon droppings constantly, in Barcelona’s Plaza de Catalonia. The city also faces a threat from another avian species, the monk parakeet, numbers of which have grown sharply over recent years. So far, though, no plans have been drawn up to counter the noisy birds!

Police ‘danger’ warning of charging mobiles publicly

THE National Police have issued a warning about the dangers of using public USB ports to charge mobile phones.

The alert, published via the official police Twitter feed, warns the public to the danger of having their information hacked when using a public chargingpoint. In the same way that connecting a mobile phone to a PC allows you to access its memory, plugging a mobile into a public USB port enables others to access the information stored in it, or pass on

malware, for example. To avoid these problems, the police recommend you carry an external battery pack, because this can be recharged at a public USB, without risking your phone data. Another option is to turn off the phone completely before charging it at a public USB port, making it much harder for potential hackers to access private information. The third option is to carry a USB cable, which enables the device to be charged, but does not allow any data transfer, as is the case with almost all USB cables sold with mobile phones these days.

Gunman holds up a terrified cabbie

A MAN aged 52 was arrested by National Police in San Bar-tolome de Tirajana, Gran Canaria, for threatening a taxi-driver with an armed weapon. The cops received a call from the shocked licensed cabbie, who was working the night-shift in Gran Canaria’s Morgan area. The taxi driver said he took a fare, and, on the request of the passenger, trans-

ported him to the busy, touristic area of Playa del Ingles. But when the cab arrived, the passenger began acting strangely, and, suddenly, took a gun from his jacket. The terrified driver felt it poking into his ribs, and heard his passenger saying he wouldn’t pay, and that he was going to kill him. The cabbie was stunned by the actions of the passenger, who fled the cab and disappeared into the crowds.

Police cordoned off the area immediately, and their search for the man ended in a local nightclub. The premises were being emptied as the officers approached the man, thanks to the driver’s precise description, and saw him reaching for something from his trouser pocket. He was arrested immediately. Then, as they searched the individual, they discovered the weapon he had used. Needless to say, he is in custody, awaiting a court appearance.

Stranded shark needed health check by experts ‘Poisoned’ teenager battles to stay alive

SUN-BATHERS who posed for selfies with a stranded shark before returning it to the sea, have received sharp criticism from the emergency services. They have been told, in no uncertain terms, that they should have left the one-metre fish shark to professionals, who would have made sure it was healthy enough before releasing it.

Sadly, despite being found and retrieved by Equinac animal-rescue charity, which took it to the Aquarium of Almeria, it later died. People gathered round the shark, inquisitively, when it was found in shallow water at Almeria’s Romanilla beach, at Roquetas del Mar. Lifeguards could not stop the crowd from closing in, intent on taking selfies with the injured creature. And one man even grabbed it by the tail and pulled it out to sea. Civil Protection officers

have said it was exactly what not to do, and they are reminding people that there is a strict protocol to follow when stranded animals on beaches are found. Bathers should have notified 112 emergencies, who would have sent a team of specialists to examine the shark. And, because of its cuts to the head and a fin, it would have been treated before being set free. Equinac has criticised the bathers, whom, it says, “harassed and manipulated” the creature

A BRITISH teenager has been left fighting for his life in a Spanish hospital after, allegedly, being poisoned with pesticide on the Costa Blanca. Callum Forster, aged 17, and his stepdad Jamie Hadland, 24, were rushed to Torrevieja Hospital after feeling ill following a family night out with friends. Callum, pictured, suffered 10 seizures, and the pair were both put into intensive care a fortnight ago. They were heavily sedated to avoid seizures, and, after a few days, Jamie was well enough to be discharged. However, Callum remains seriously ill, with tests showing both men had strong pesticide in their bloodstreams. It is not known how they came to swallow the

poison, but he is now off the life-support machine. They arrived in Spain for a family holiday, with Callum’s mum, Helen Forster, 36, and his 12-yearold brother Brandon. The family are staying in Villamartin, until Callum is well enough to return home. And a friend, Jane Rapier, has set up a crowdfunding page to cover the costs of their extended stay. Spanish police and the British Consulate have been informed, and an investigation is being carried out. Jane says Callum is now off life-support, “but he has been sedated again because he is struggling to cope, and he’s scared and confused.” She added: “He is also unable to talk, which is adding to the stress.”

Local blaze might have hidden drugsmugglers POLICE believe that a gang of smart drugtraffickers could have been behind a huge Costa del Sol blaze in Manilva, to divert attention from their huge marijuana haul.

Their theory was expounded after a grey 4×4 was dragged out of the sea, on a nearby beach, the next morning. “It’s a well-known tactic and has been done elsewhere before,” said Briton Dean Tyler Shelton, a foreign British councillor for Manilva. “But I must stress that it is just a line of inquiry for now.” These vehicles are used, typically, by drug gangs, and this motor is believed to have been dumped in the sea after an engine failure. The blaze started at around 1.30am last Monday, while the Manilva fair, celebrating the feast of Santa Ana, was closing with a firework display. While the hills of Manilva burned, according to reports, several 4x4s were seen racing at high speed from the beach. “If drug gangs were behind the blaze, then it’s possible that a huge volume of drugs was brought ashore that night,” said Councillor Shelton. Around 400 residents had to be evacuated, because the fire began encroaching on nearby homes. And it took emergency services until 8.30am to get the flames under control, which would have provided the smugglers with a perfect smoke-screen. It was rumoured that the fireworks might have caused the blaze, but this theory was quashed quickly because the fire started some 6km away from the display. More than 40 fire-fighters tackled the fires, in Los Hidalgos and Hacienda Guadalupe, as well as the El Goleto residential developments and campsites, in the Duquesa area. The Manilva mayor, who described the event as “a night of confusion”, thanked the authorities for ensuring there were no injuries. Guardia Civil could not confirm the cause of the blaze, but the investigation continues.

Boozy-woozy Spain topples health limit

SPAIN’S acknowledged alcohol threshold, compared with that of other European countries, is a great cause for concern among health experts.

The Government’s Health Ministry recommends that men drink no more than four standard drinks of booze per day, and women no more than two. But that is still double the limit recommended in France, and four times the Netherlands’ limit, where one drink only is said to be legal. The limit for low-risk alcohol consumption is outlined in the Ministry’s 2016 Health Promotion Strategy, which defines a standard drink as 10gms of alcohol, which is around one beer or a glass of wine. Curiously, the difference between Spanish and other European standards was revealed by Diageo, a British multi-national alcoholic beverages company, which collected official data from countries across the world. Officials then introduced the figures at a seminar, which it sponsored, jointly, with the National Association of Health Informers (ANIS). Antonio Luis Villarino, director of the Institute of Drug Addiction, at Madrid’s Complutense University,

highlighted the lack of consensus, and how this could impact the public’s perception of what, they presume, constitutes “lowrisk” alcohol consumption. “We’re not going to recommend anyone to drink, of course,” said Villarino. “But we want to be able to tell drinkers what level will do them the least harm.” The table includes data from 56 countries. No country tops Spain’s recommended limits for men, although some countries, such as Japan and South Korea, set the same volumes. Spain also has some of the softest limits for women, beaten only by Malta and Belgium. Other countries, such as the US and the UK, set different limits for men and women, while others, like the Netherlands and Belgium, have the same cap. “It’s an interesting decision, given that women have a different tolerance to alcohol,” said Villarino. “That’s because, typically, they weigh less than men. They are also shorter, in general, and have a different distribution of fat and a lower proportion of alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes, which help the body to metabolise alcohol.” Establishing a common norm for what constitutes a standard drink is important to making any health recommendation. As stated, Spain’s standard

alcohol drink is 10gms, but this volume is much higher in the Philippines, Mexico and Macedonia. This issue raises the question of how alcohol affects a person’s health, and whether any amount of alcohol is healthy. It is being argued, more and more, that the recommended consumption of alcohol should be zero. But while there is consensus that pregnant women, minors, drivers and people with certain illness (such as psychiatric or heart problems) should not drink any alcohol. Needless to say, not everyone agrees that this limit should be applied to the general population. That’s because it is impossible to conduct a direct clinical trial, where one half of a group is encouraged to drink two glasses a day. But there are multiple population studies, which have linked life- expectancy to drinking and smoking habits. British dietician and scientist Carrie Ruxton, for instance, looked at America’s Seventh Adventist, which is a group often studied because members refuse to smoke or drink. She discovered that the relationship between alcohol and mortality is “practically neutral in the beginning, or even in favour of those who drink a little, when compared with those

who abstain entirely”. However, the curve jumps upwards “in a j-shape”, showing that alcohol is a clear cause of death. An investigation by Angela Wood, from the University of Cambridge, also found that alcohol was linked to a higher mortality rate. The study, published in The Lancet, looked at 83 studies of nearly 600,000 people who consumed alcohol. It found that “in current drinkers of alcohol in highincome countries, the threshold for lowest risk of all-cause mortality was about 100gms a week.” However, for those suffering cardiovascular disease, said the study, “there were no clear risk-thresholds, below which, lower alcohol consumption stopped being associated with lower disease risk.” It adds: “This data supported limits for alcohol consumption that are lower than those recommended in most current guidelines.” Many countries do not have an estimated weekly threshold. Instead, they multiply the daily limit by seven, leading to numbers far exceeding the recommended threshold. The debate over what is a healthy volume of alcohol is likely to continue, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) arguing that there is no healthy threshold for alcohol consumption.

‘Secret’ drugs are far more powerful than regular ones! A SHOCKING new fact has been exposed about drugs, with as many as 35 new psychoactive substances now finding their way into Spain’s ever-growing market. Yet it shouldn’t be a shock to experts, because these drugs were detected back in 2015 by the Early Warning System. That forms part of the Health Ministry’s National Plan Against Drugs (PNSD), but the drugs are immune to detection by traditional methods, which makes them even more difficult to control. Consequently, they have become a secretive threat, flagged up by the Spanish Observatory for Drugs and Addiction, which believes that 71% of Spaniards have never heard of them. Now, Manuel Isorna Folgar and Antonio Rial Boubeta, two psychology professors from the Universities of Vigo and Santiago, are developing the first study on the drugs. It will be conducted in Galicia, where the men hope to measure the extent of consumption by young people, aged between 14-23. With the collaboration of their respective universities, both researchers have based their findings on a survey of 500 students, though they hope this number

will expand to incorporate 10,000 youngsters, with support from the regional government. “These new drugs are a combination of substances, made mainly in China and India by altering their chemical structure to produce similar, or more powerful, effects than traditional drugs such as cocaine, heroin or hashish,” said Manuel Isorna. “Besides slipping through the net when it comes to controls, many are sold as plant fertiliser, such as mephedrone, or as bath salts, like cathinone. The label indicates that the product has been packaged in Europe and is not fit for human consumption, but the manufacturers make it clear they accept “no responsibility”. Isorna, who has more than 20 years of experience involving drug-prevention in the Pontevedra province, said another cause for concern was the appearance on the market of synthetic cannabinoids. These are herbs injected

with molecules similar to THC, the main active component in cannabis. But they are far more potent, triggering panic and psychosis, yet also immune to detection in drug tests. Youths are staying away from nightclubs, increasingly, and taking to the streets to drink and drug instead, say experts. The Galicia study also covers the consumption of traditional drugs, such as tobacco, alcohol and cannabis, to establish whether the way in which youngsters are taking these drugs has changed. “A lot of kids smoke tobacco in e-cigarettes or hookahs, because they believe it is less harmful,” says Isorna. “But that is totally false. Smoking in this way for an hour is the equivalent of smoking between 10 to 20 cigarettes.” According to the last PNSD survey, 20.1% of students, aged 14-18, have smoked electronic cigarettes. As for alcohol, there is a growing trend to replace it with

Shameful Britons have homeless man tattooed

BRITS taking part in a Benidorm stag party have infuriated people after paying 100 euros to a homeless man to have the bridegroom’s name tattooed on his forehead.

The thoughtless group paid 34-year-old Polish national Tomek to have “Jamie Blake, North Shields, NE28” inked on his head, but it wasn’t completed because he was in too much pain. The parlour handling Tomek posted a nowdeleted photo on its Facebook page of him

being tattooed, as he delivers a peace sign while staring at the ceiling. The incident has infuriated expats and residents alike, prompting local businesses to discuss the possibility of paying to have the tattoo removed. The tattooist halted, when two letters into ‘North Shields’, leaving it to

a concoction, known popularly as “purple drank”. This comprises high doses of prescription cough-syrup as a base, containing codeine (an opiate) and promethazine (a sedative), and mixed with a lime-flavoured soft drink. And, because of its opiate content, it is highly addictive. There is also the German liqueur Jägermeister, which is mixed with energy-andstimulant drinks such as Red Bull. The kind of consumption is popular at botellóns, which are outdoor binge-drinking sessions, and demonstrates that youngsters are trying to cut the price of getting high… and also cutting the time it takes by stimulating the nervous system rapidly. To make matters worse, experts believe that current trends in cannabis consumption are also cause for alarm. “It’s possibly what concerns us the most, because that segment of the population believes it is innocuous,” says Isorna. “Young consumers should be made aware that the cannabis consumed in Spain before 2000 contained a concentration of THC of around 4%. “Now, the average active ingredient is between 1620%, so smoking a joint nowadays is like smoking four or five joints, 18 years ago.” Experts are also aware that youngsters use increasinglyheavy concentrations of

read: “Jamie Blake No”. Karen Maling Cowles, Benidorm British Business Association President, found Tomek after seeing the picture. She told The Guardian newspaper that he was jaundiced and had the shakes. He also informed her that he was an alcoholic. After spending most of the money he’d been paid, Tomek was attacked and robbed of his remaining 17 euros on the beach. Karen described how he was struggling to walk with

THC to get high as quickly as possible. Some put a drop of so-called butane hash oil on the tip of the joint before smoking it. But, because it is so hard on the lungs, some prefer to vaporise it in e-cigarettes. “It’s not difficult to find tutorials on how to extract oil from cannabis on the internet,” says Isorna. “Inflammable gas, such as butane, is used, which makes it dangerous.” He also believes that the way young people enjoy themselves has changed, mostly. “Nightclubs and traditional pubs are disappearing because they can’t compete with the botellón,” he adds. “Then, you learn that a fourday festival in a village in Albacete, in central Spain, which attracts more than 200,000 youngsters, is being sponsored by companies that sell cannabis seeds and alcohol.” Isorna and his colleague are also aware that the internet has made drugs universally-accessible, at the click of a mouse. “You order them, and, in a couple of days, the mailman brings them to your door, without you having to go near the darknet,” he says. “New drugs are appearing so quickly that the authorities don’t have time to ban them, while some ‘grow shops’ sell them as incense, or air-freshener for cars. And that’s another threat which is difficult to combat.”

It’s jobs galore, but we still need more!

THE number of new jobs created in Spain in the second quarter of the year totalled 469,900, which was the highest number recorded since records began, 10 years ago. It has helped reduce unemployment by 306,000, with the jobless rate now standing at 15.28%. That was the lowest for nearly a decade, according to data from the Active Population Survey (EPA). Unfortunately, though, there are still 3.49m jobless people. The total number now employed stands at 19.34 million, and, should current trends continue, the number of jobs in Spain is likely to reach 20 million during the next year. Most new jobs were created in the service sector (371,000), while the rebound in construction (63,400) was reflected in the figures.

Nearly all the extra jobs came in the private sector (up 457,800 to 16.22m) with the public sector adding just 12,100 to its 3.12m total. By region, the biggest falls in unemployment were in

Andalusia (-65,400), Madrid (-45,900) and Valencia (-32,600). As for jobs created, the Balearic Islands led the way (+85,400), followed by Andalusia (+64,700) and Catalonia (+57,200). Although the figures look

good, there is a concern that many of the new jobs may be precarious. The number of temporary contracts increased by 5.6%, compared with the 2% rise in indefinite contracts.

Migrants? We can’t cope, stresses Mayor ALGECIRAS Mayor Jose Ignacio Landaluce insists his town “couldn’t cope”, after hearing of around 1,600 migrants landing in Spain a fortnight ago, arriving predominantly in his area. Landaluce has criticised the EU, warning that it could become “the new Lampedusa’, a Italian town which has struggled to cope with the recent migrant crisis. The Mayor of Algeciras, has called for caution, revealing: “We’ve never, ever, ever had 1,000 migrants arriving in Spain each weekend. And all this could just be for starters.” He added: “There’s a lot of the summer left and there are thousands and thousands of migrants arriving on the coasts of North Africa, plus thousands and thousands more, who have been waiting to cross for months, or years!” The news comes after the Spanish Maritime Service had to rescue 1,000 migrants fleeing Africa and were picked up in the Strait of Gibraltar two weeks ago. A survivor from a capsized wreckage was also transferred to a Spanish hospital, after being found next to two dead bodies in Palma, Mallorca.

The only real hiccup for USD came as President Donald Trump criticised the strength of the US currency, blaming it on the Federal Reserve’s policy of aggressive monetary tightening.

Pound investors are currently awaiting the conclusion of the Bank of England’s policy meeting, later this week, and are likely to be reluctant to alter their positions in the currency, before the bank makes its August interest-rate decision. The meeting is widely expected to result in the BoE voting to raise interest rates by a quarter of a percent to 0.75%, but analysts

This week, the Federal Reserve will also meet for its own policy meeting, prompting investors to focus on the US dollar. Irate Ryanair staff spell out conditions

RYANAIR staff have taken to social media during the current strikes by cabin crew, pilots and ground staff, to underscore their working conditions. They are striking for two days following the breakdown of talks between the unions and Ryanair. The hashtag #RyanairMustChange was trending before last weekend, with angered staff revealing

their grievances. The list, posted on social media, outlines that staff “have no medical assistance in Spain, despite living and working in the country” and are “working under a disciplinary terror regime”, with many supporters offering online solidarity. Ryanair boss, Michael O’Leary, has responded to the recent strikes by planning to “cut back Ryanair’s Dublin fleet by 20%, and moving more aircraft to Poland, putting 300 jobs under threat”. Trade union Forsa, which represents

the pilots, slammed the carrier for making ‘threatening statements’. A spokesman for the union said: “This kind of threatening statement is not conducive to building trust and reaching a resolution to the dispute, and Forsa doesn’t accept that jobs or expansion in the airline need be put at risk by company management.” The Dublin-based airline has been offering alternative flights or refunds, but refuses to provide additional compensation.

The Prosecutors: Modern Day Slavery Thurs 9th August, BBC2, 21.00

The nature of crime in the UK is changing, and countering the complex offending of organized criminal groups is one of the biggest challenges prosecutors face. This film follows the work of Eran Cutliffe, a senior prosecutor at the Crown Prosecution Service, over nearly two years, as she tries to build a case that will break new legal ground. What she’s tackling is happening in plain sight up and down the UK’s high streets – child trafficking and exploitation. In gang-run nail bars, unsuspecting customers are having their nails painted by underage Vietnamese girls, who have arrived in the UK in containers or lorries and are moved around the country to work as slaves. Children found by police and immigration officers at nail bars are placed into foster care but they often run away and return to the network, making it even harder for the authorities to help them and to bring to justice those exploiting them. The Modern Slavery Act was passed in 2015 in a bid to tackle new forms of slavery. But the way in which the new law deals with the exploitation of children has never been tested in court. For this landmark case Eran joins forces with barrister and Human Trafficking expert, Caroline Haughey. The pair works together with Staffordshire and Avon and Somerset police, as the case grows. The girls found in the nail bars do not see themselves as victims. As illegal immigrants, with no other options, they are happy to be fed and housed and work for free. As Eran hears more accounts from the girls, the similarities between their stories make her suspect that the network is coaching the girls in what to say if they are questioned by the police.

Tuesday 7th August, ITV1, 19.30 In this new six-part series for ITV, Julia Bradbury finds out if it’s possible to buy and renovate a home abroad for just £10,000. Some savvy sun worshippers claim to have paid just twice the £5,000 that an average family reportedly spends on their annual break away - to have their very own holiday home. From Spain to France, and Italy to Bulgaria, some properties are up for grabs at unbelievably low prices. This series features Julia finding out whether the dream of a holiday home in the sun can really be achievable for the price of a second-hand car - by taking on her own fixer-upper in Portugal. Along the way she meets people who have done just that - using shepherds’ huts, troglodyte caves and even river boats to make their dream homes in the sun on a budget. Julia is helped by her friend, designer and salvage expert Max McMurdo, who uses his DIY skills to help Julia renovate her Portuguese retreat and takes on a challenge of creating his own holiday home on wheels in the UK for less than £5,000. But can they really achieve their goals on such tight budgets? In the first episode, Julia visits Portugal where her internet searches have led her to two possible houses. Her first stop is the Algarve, but she soon finds that the further north you travel, the cheaper properties are. Her challenge gets off to a flying start when she secures a cottage for just £5,700. She also meets Richard, originally from Somerset, who bought and renovated two shepherds’ huts for under £10,000 in Portugal. And Londoners Simon and Philip give a guided tour of their property in Bulgaria, bought for £7,000 in 2004. Max finds a neglected old ‘80s caravan which he buys for £100, leaving him plenty of cash to spend on his mobile vacation home. For inspiration, he meets Ella and Tom from Devon, who spent their honeymoon in the motorhome they created from an old Canadian school bus for just £6,200.

k’s TV Choice Angela Carter: Of Wolves And Women Saturday 4th August, BBC2, 21.00

Angela Carter’s surreal imagination produced some of the most dazzling fiction of the last century. Pioneering her own distinctive brand of magic realism, works like The Magic Toyshop and Nights At The Circus cracked open the middle-class conventions of the post-war novel and influenced a new generation of writers. Yet in her lifetime Carter’s fierce politics, frank exploration of gender, and fondness for the supernatural unnerved the macho literary establishment. She never won the Booker Prize or received the staggering advances of her male contemporaries - and regularly struggled to pay the bills, despite creating the acclaimed film The Company Of Wolves. Four decades on, Carter’s powerful tales of desire, fearless women and monstrous sexual predators have never felt more relevant. As Jeanette Winterson says in the film: “Every woman writing now has a debt to Angela Carter, whether or not they have read her. She was ahead of her time. And that’s why we’re so interested in her now because she’s coming into her time almost prophetically.” Narrated by Sally Phillips, this film is a dark and delicious foray into Angela Carter’s extraordinary life. While Carter’s early work drew on her creepily claustrophobic childhood and miserable early marriage; it was her experience of living in Japan in the 1970s that liberated both her writing and her sexuality. And she continued to live out of kilter with polite society, horrifying critics with expletive laden put-downs, falling in love with a teenage builder in her 30s, becoming a mother at 43 - and, tragically, winning the reviews of her career for Wise Children, the week after her death at the age of 51.

Eilidh Barbour presents highlights from the fourth and final round of the 2018 Women’s British Open. The best golfers in the world are descending on Royal Lytham & St Annes for this year’s penultimate major championship. Your Guide to the Cyder Cup 4 ...with a word from our sponsors...

Preparing your finances for Brexit

By Michael McSeveney - International Financial Adviser at Blacktower Financial Management (Int) Limited

WITH the UK scheduled to leave the EU bloc on the 29th March 2019, a possible deal on Brexit closes near. With further negotiations still to take place, what kind of deal (if any) this will be is still uncertain.

As a British ex-pat in Spain, there has never been a more urgent time to ensure that your finances are sufficiently positioned, to help mitigate the potential impacts of Brexit. It is estimated that there are approximately 45,000 British ex-pats who reside in Tenerife, either for all, or at least part of, the year. It is important to clarify if, in the view of the Spanish tax authorities, you will be classed as a tax resident of Spain. You will be classed as a tax resident of Spain if; • You reside in Spain for more than 183 days per year (January to December, ignoring temporary absences) • You have family ties in Spain; for example, if your spouse or children live in Spain • Have a major source of income or economic activity in Spain Further guidance on this, and your obligations as Spanish tax resident, and other useful tax information, can be found in Blacktower Groups “Guide to Tax in Spain” by visiting w w w. b l a c k t o w e r f m . com Many British ex-pats who reside, and intend to continue living, in

Spain, still hold the core of their financial interests in the UK. This may be viewed as necessary for those who maintain links with the UK, for ease of dealing with commitments such as family and property ownership. There are particular financial arrangements that should be considered in order to ensure that the tax compliance of holding these arrangements is suitably efficient, in order to address the tax implications for those who are tax residents in Spain. Regardless of Brexit, the Spanish Tax Authorities do not recognise many of the UK tax-efficient investment and saving arrangements such as ISAs, Bonds and Premium Bonds. Although gains made on these holdings are not subject to any tax in the UK, as a Spanish tax resident these gains are seen as part of your worldwide taxable income, and therefore subject to annual taxation in Spain. Blacktower Financial Management is able to offer solutions and guidance to help ensure that your savings and

investments are fully compliant in Spain, and provide you with optimal tax efficiency and flexibility. Brexit has also raised concerns regarding legal uncertainties that could cause possible complications involving cross-border financial services contracts, in areas such as pensions and insurance. We are able to offer guidance, regarding options for personal and occupational pensions. One available solution is to transfer your pension out of the UK into a ROPS (previously known as QROPS). These pension schemes are based overseas, but are recognised by HMRC in the UK. Moving your pension away from the UK can help to remove the risk of future pension legislation changes made in the UK, and provide greater flexibility to accessing income, and greater tax efficiency. ROPS arrangements may not be suitable for everybody, and we are able to offer advice on alternative UK arrangements, should you wish to keep your pension in the UK. Professional, expert advice is critical to

effectively manage your tax liability in Spain, particularly if there are possible cross-jurisdictional

and language issues to consider. At Blacktower, we understand that everyone is different, and it is important your adviser has an understanding of you, your circumstances, your long-term goals and your cash-flow needs. We take the time to get to know you, and will answer your investing, savings and retirementplanning questions, so that we may provide a truly bespoke service. CYDER CUP FORMAT/RULES All usual, golf rules, etiquette, and rules of the course apply, with the addition of the following for the Cyder Cup 2-man Scramble format: 1. 8 drives for each player MUST be used, with the extra 2 by either player. 2. The next shot for each pairing must be played by the player whose ball has been chosen, including putting. You may NOT mark the ball and the other player must play first. 3. You may place your ball on the fairway or green, but you must drop it in the rough. If the ball you have chosen to play is in the rough, you too MUST play from the rough. 4. Players must ‘putt out’; there are NO gimmes. 5. On prize holes, you must measure or mark your drive with equipment provided, and have it verified by the other team. Longest drive MUST be on the fairway. 6. On hole 2, you must get the ball inside the circle on your first shot only, to be eligible for the Holiday Draw at the presentation.

SCORING 1.Each pair MUST write the number of shots that they as a pair have taken for each hole, as these scores will be used for the BEST PAIRS SCORE trophy, which is the shots scored minus 20% of their combined handicap. 2.Each hole score goes towards the overall TEAM SCORE for the Cyder Cup, ie, if you win a hole, 1 point, if you halve a hole ½ a point each.

PRIZE HOLES HOLE 2 – WIN A HOLIDAY sponsored by MGM Muthu Hotels HOLE 5 – NEAREST THE PIN sponsored by TributoFest Tenerife HOLE 12 – NEAREST THE PIN sponsored by Canarian Weekly HOLE 18 – NEAREST THE PIN sponsored by Rendezvous Restaurant HOLE 10 – LONGEST DRIVE sponsored by Powerwave Tenerife

GENERAL All pairings have been matched as closely as possible by combined handicaps/course knowledge. The total handicaps is 715 for both teams!

Our Lives: The Great Cheese Chase e c i o ch BBC1, 19.30

Every spring thousands of people from all over the world converge on the Gloucestershire village of Brockworth. They come to watch - and also to compete - in one of rural England’s craziest traditions: cheese rolling. This year, there’s a new competitor lining up at the top of super-steep Cooper’s Hill - Inside Out West presenter Seb Choudhury. Seb has signed up to take part in the terrifying race where 25 people throw themselves down the hill in pursuit of a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese. But as he prepares to take part, he finds out more about the race, the cheese and the people who’ve battled to keep it true to its roots. Seb says: “It’s one of the most terrifying challenges I’ve ever faced. Standing at the top of Cooper’s Hill, looking down and knowing I was going to throw myself down a cliff face, I wondered why I’d ever agreed to do this. But by then it was too late.” As a local TV journalist, Seb has reported on the event in previous years, including in 2010 when the race was cancelled over safety fears. That led to fierce battles within Brockworth over the future of the cheese roll - with some wanting to transform it into a ticketed event while others passionate about keeping it free. The cheese roll is still free to enter and very much a community affair, with the cheese made by hand by a local farmer and villagers pitching in to help organise it. First aiders are on standby to attend to the inevitable fractures, sprains, dislocations and concussions as people hurl themselves headlong to the foot of the hill chasing the hefty cheese. Will Seb make it down in one piece and will he win the cheese? Watch this space…

Animal Park Summer Special e c i o BBC1, 09.15 ch

In the first episode, the team attempt to capture the exact moment Africa’s most endangered cat is born. If the cameras can capture this incredible moment, it’ll be the first time the keepers have ever seen a live cheetah birth. Jean Johansson helps to settle in a gaggle of new penguins, but will they make a splash with the rest of the colony? Meanwhile, one of Africa’s largest antelopes checks into the park, but at just a quarter of the size of his predecessor bull, the keepers are on tenterhooks as he meets his new, much larger lady friends for the first time.

This week Alan heads to Essex to surprise selfless retired Nurse Pat Wade - who was the first person in the UK to set up a Charity for young burn survivors - The Children’s Burns Club. The club organises events for children and teenagers with burn scarring and their families. Since the club began in 1995, summer camps and outings have become a vital part of young people’s recovery. Pat has shown that by socializing with other young people in the same circumstances builds their self-esteem and provides essential psychological support. As a thank you from the many children who she has helped over the years, Alan Titchmarsh and his team of experts Katie Rushworth, Frances Tophill and David Domoney turn Pat’s tiny concrete covered backyard into a glamourous outdoor entertaining space - filled with flowers and bling!

The Bletchley Circle: San Francisco e c i o h ITV1, 21.00 c

As Iris struggles with husband Marcus’ imminent deployment overseas, she and the other women delve into the mysterious death of a friend - and uncover a marriage built on lies and deception. At odds over Jean’s imminent return to London, Millie and Jean have lunch with Edward, Millie’s cousin (and landlord), who breaks the news that he intends to evict Millie, leaving her with neither friends nor resources in a new city. Meanwhile, Iris and Hailey attend a dinner party at the suburban home of Lydia, a former Presidio colleague. Now relegated to a mundane homemaking existence, Lydia idealizes their glory days of the war. At the party, an explosive altercation between a guest and her husband catches their attention, and when the wife turns up dead from a hit-and-run, Iris can’t shake the feeling that the two events are connected. Torn between the obligations of motherhood and her own instincts about the case, Iris must convince Hailey and her British partners to help unravel the victim’s secretly encoded life.

Virgin of Candelaria Festivity

This festivity, officially designated as being of National Interest to Tourism, has a highly religious and devotional component. It embodies five centuries of faith, belief and respectful love for the Virgin of Candelaria. Pilgrims from all corners of the island converge on Candelaria to pay tribute to their patron saint. Many spend the previous night trekking along the roads leading to the town. The celebration (closely associated with the world of Tenerife’s native inhabitants) is held on the evening of 14 August and includes the traditional floral offering to the Virgin, together with performances by an assortment of Canarian folk groups. The main square outside the Basilica stages the re-enactment of the apparition of the Virgin to Guanche natives, according to the tradition.

Descent of the Beeches 2018

La Guancha’s Descent of the Beeches takes its origins from the journey by owners of load-carrying livestock to the mountains to collect branches of beech trees, which were then used to decorate the town square and the streets for the religious procession. The same route is still used today, as are the stopping points where participants would treat local residents to farm products and refreshments on their way through the town streets. 11th august la guancha www.laguancha.es

Garachico Country Fair in honour of Saint Roch

Thousands of visitors head to Garachico to take part in one of Tenerife’s most popular and traditional fiestas. Pilgrims converge on the small church of St Roch and the saint’s image is then carried to St Anne’s church in the town centre, where a religious service is held at noon. The popular country fair gets under way at 1pm. The image of the saint is taken back to its home church in a procession accompanied by a band, ox-drawn carts, flocks of animals, animals in harnesses, together with singing and instrumental groups. In parallel, Garachico fishermen stage a maritime procession, with their boats accompanying the image of the saint along the coast.

Wardrobe dressing A WARDROBE is an essential piece of furniture in any home, and necessary for the storage of clothes, shoes and personal effects. If you are living in your property, you’ll probably need more space than if it’s used for holiday lets or rentals. But even people on holiday want to hang their clothes up and put things away out of sight, rather than living out of a suitcase!

The wardrobe is one of the biggest pieces of furniture in your home, and, as such, is worthy of some consideration as to how it fits into your design, or how it looks. Free - standing wardrobes can be situated anywhere in the room, and this may depend on the shape of the area and the amount of space you have available.

You can try to make them blend in by using a neutral colour to match the wall, or make a statement by dressing them up a bit. If you’ve inherited a standard MDF wardrobe that has no style at all, don’t despair. With very little effort, you can transform it into something more interesting. There are specialist paints that

can be used on MDF or melamine furniture to transform them. And, by changing the handles to something more glamorous, and using stencils or stickers, your wardrobe can become a thing of beauty, in keeping with the rest of your interior design. Fitted wardrobes are popular in Tenerife because a lot of properties,

particularly those built in recent years, have smaller rooms. They can be situated in alcoves, to make the most of all the available space. Wall-to-wall wardrobes are really nothing more than a set of doors across the room, creating a space, between them and the rear wall, to use for storage. You can then use carcass furniture, which is cheap because it has a rough finish, to provide you with whatever type of storage solutions you need, such as drawers, rails, shelves etc. Fitted wardrobes don’t need to be boring. If you hate the colour or design of the doors, eg they are too dark for your liking, you can replace them, or have them sprayed to give

a different impression. You can also use mirrored panels to create an effect, with the added advantage that they will reflect light around the room and make it appear larger. If you are really short of space, the mirrors can also be useful for doing makeup and styling hair. The best space-saving solution of all is a row of fitted wardrobes with sliding doors. Because the doors slide along tracks fitted on the floor, you don’t lose any space as you would if the doors opened outwards. For innovative storage solutions, at a low price, consult Deco Nuevo on 922 789729, who will visit you at your property to give you free, no-obligation estimates.

Later-life activity is very important By Val Sainsbury TWO weeks of physical inactivity can trigger full-blown diabetes in seniors with prediabetes, a new study shows. Not being active enough can lead to this disease in older people who are already vulnerable to the condition. As we get older, physical exercise becomes more and more vital. Aerobic activity and muscle training have been shown to improve the psychological well-being of elderly people, and even a few minutes of light exercise can increase lifespan and improve brain function. The benefits of physical activity have long been praised, but what are the effects of not doing enough? Some studies have shown that having a sedentary lifestyle harms brain health and raises

the risk of diabetes and dementia in seniors, while others have suggested that being physically inactive simply makes you age faster. A group of people, aged 60-85, who had already been diagnosed with prediabetes, were examined. The researchers asked the study participants to restrict their daily number of steps to fewer than 1,000 for a period of two weeks. No more than 1,000 steps per day is the equivalent of being housebound. The researchers monitored the physical activity of the seniors, using pedometers and other specialised devices, and they also took blood samples and measured their blood-sugar levels. Only days after the study started, the participants’ skeletal muscle mass and strength had decreased, significantly. Those who had prediabetes quickly displayed signs of fullblown Type-2 diabetes, such as insulin resistance. Merely returning to a healthy exercise regime for another two weeks was not enough to offset the harmful effects of inactivity.

The team of scientists was led by Chris Mcglory, a Diabetes Canada Research Fellow in the Department of Kinesiology at McMaster University in Ontario. “We expected to find that the study participants would develop diabetes,” he said, “but we were surprised to see that they didn’t revert to their healthier state, when they returned to normal activity.” Stuart Phillips, who is a professor of kinesiology and the senior investigator of the study, also comments on the findings, saying: “Treatment of Type-2 diabetes is expensive and often complicat-

ed. If people are going to be off their feet for an extended period, they need to work actively to recover their ability to han-

dle blood sugar.” In the United States, over 84 million adults are currently living with prediabetes, and another 23.1 million

received a formal diagnosis of diabetes, so these findings could be relevant for a significant part of the population.

Adopt a second kitten! KITTENS have even more fun when they have a playmate! They are fine on their own, of course, because they have their owners to keep them occupied and content, but two little bundles of mischief amuse themselves, and form close and special bonds with each other. If you adopt a second kitten, we will pay for it to be neutered, as well as its first kitten injection. This also applies to all black kittens, not just the second. We have lots of adorable kittens available, all waiting to be adopted so that they can start their new lives in special, new homes! Would you like to give a furry friend the love and safety it deserves? We also have several adult cats who would love to be snuggled up on someone's sofa today. There are males

and females, ranging from 18 months to seven years. All are leukaemia negative, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you are interested, please contact us via Facebook or ring/WhatsApp Sandra (English, Spanish and German) on 671 282 773 after 6pm, or Sharon (English) on 662 524 006. We are sure there is a purrfect one for you! All cats are adopted with a week's trial in your home, to make sure you've made the right decision. Fostering We are looking for volunteers to help, in their own homes, with bottlefeeding kittens! Every day, messages reach us of small kittens being found, and we need more foster carers who are willing to help very small kittens with their start in this world. We will supply all the milk - and support! If you are

interested, please send us a message for further details. Our shop We always need cat food, litter, sheets, towels, bedding etc for the cats and kittens in our care, and also good quality/ condition items for sale in our shop. They can be dropped into the shop on San Blas, Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 10-6pm. If you don't have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636 590 557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Dedicated Estefania! A DREAM has come true for a lovely Canarian lady called Estefania, who visited the refuge as a child, eleven years ago. She is now working here as a veterinary nurse, fulfilling her passion for caring for abandoned dogs, here in Tenerife. We can never stress enough the importance of microchipping your dog or cat. So many dogs arrive at the refuge without a microchip, which makes it extremely difficult to reunite them with their owners. It also causes unnecessary anxiety to your animal, so please do insure your dog's microchip is in place, with current contact details. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 6643 21219, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. We always need

tinned dog food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. Wine and Dine

3rd August - 9th August 2018 PINEAPPLES are, perhaps, one of the most-widelyconsumed tropical fruits in the world. They taste amazing, and can be eaten, as well as processed into juice. Although many people prefer them in juice form, there are countless benefits to eating them fresh. Getting through their hard shells might be a daunting task, but the yellow, inner fruit is delicious. Pineapples' health benefits include improving the immune system, lowering the risk of cancer, helping to heal wounds, improving gut health, strengthening bones, improving eye health and promoting tissue and cellular health of skin. They also alleviate the common cold, and strengthen gums. They help to improve your health, boost your immune system to provide you with optimum protection against external viruses and bacteria, and help you get rid of your chronic cough. Pineapples have a lot of health benefits, and are prescribed to people suffering with respiratory complications. They contain ample amounts of bromelain, an enzyme which is responsible for cancer prevention, a reduction in inflammation, and a good digestion system. Pineapples contain Vitamins B1, B6 and C, as well as manganese and folate. They are excellent at healing sore

Golden delights of the pineapple gums and revitalising our immune system. Improve immunity Since pineapples contain bromelain, they are a key defender against any external viruses affecting your body. You can enjoy them in a fresh tropical cocktail and not even notice that, behind the great taste, the fruit is actually benefiting your body. Improved immunity also means less damage to organs because of inflammatory diseases, as they will never get the chance to affect you in the first place. Lowers risk of cancer Bromelain is an active antiinflammatory agent that helps prevent the spread of cancerous cells across the body. Research states that an increased intake of brightyellow foods can help reduce

the risk of cancer. It may help wounds Certain diseases can prevent the body from healing itself properly. A weak body cannot sustain its cellular growth, so the person's life could be in danger. The high quantity of bromelain in pineapples has shown to increase our healing ability. Research carried out produced such amazing results that the findings were used to manufacture and promote pineapple lotions. Improves gut health An efficient and healthy gut will show its effects on a person's face, while a weak digestion can lead to several gastrointestinal problems. People who eat pineapples on a regular basis can steer clear of bloating, and other problems, such as

constipation. Strengthens bones Along with bromelain, pineapples also contain manganese which is important for bone regeneration and bone growth. Pineapples have an ample amount of manganese, making them the perfect substitute for meat or milk. A German study discovered that by eating one cup of pineapple, you are able to consume 65% of your daily mineral intake. Improves eye health Recent research has proved that eating pineapples can help heal your eyesight. Generally, people over 40 are subject to weak eyesight, but eating pineapples on a daily basis can slow down macular degeneration. Tissue and cellular health Pineapples help keep your skin intact, and help prevent any skin problems through cellular degeneration. People who consume one pineapple a day are known to have increased collagen synthesis, which is an integral part of your skin health. The Vitamin C they contain is one of the most-overlooked skin rejuvenators, so eating pineapples can maintain your

body's tissue and cellular health. Alleviates the common cold Many people have to face the effects of the common cold, which include a runny nose, as well as a weak immune system. Bromelain can reduce mucus production, and it also increases the effectiveness of the immune system. Overall, eating pineapples can help defend a person against the common cold. Strengthens gums Pineapples contain an astringent, which causes the contraction of skin cells and other body tissues, and helps prevent bacteria from affecting our gums. We are susceptible to bacterial infection in our gums, regardless if we brush our teeth or not. Eating pineapples can help reduce the risk of you having to suffer for weeks, not to mention the constant pain while you face while trying to chew something. They really are nature's greatest gift to us because they have all the properties needed to help defend us against a world full of diseases and infections.

Flambé favourites By stefania Roberto THIS week, we treated ourselves to a feast with the flambé specialists at The Oyster Catcher restaurant, on the popular Mirador strip in Los Cristianos. Established since 2006, and taken over three years ago by La Gomera native Angel, and his more-thancapable team, The Oyster Catcher is a firm favourite among residents and holidaymakers alike. The range of flambés includes prawns and mushrooms, and fillets of fish, steak and pork. All are created in front of you with a flourish and flair, using only the freshest ingredients, delivered daily. We opted for the prawn-andmushroom flambé to start, with a side of bruschetta, topped with tomato and feta cheese, to mop up the sauces. The prawns and mushrooms were tossed in garlic, white wine, parsley and a hint of chili. I then chose Sole Meunière with a lemony caper sauce and creamy mash, with a fresh salad on the side. My partner selected Fillet Steak Diane in a cream, mustard and mushroom sauce, set alight with the finest brandy. It came with crunchy veg and a dish of

roast potatoes, which were crispy on the outside, but fluffy in the middle. Many people may not realise that The Oyster Catcher has a wider range available, other than flambés; they serve breakfasts and lunches, too. And, because Angel’s better half hails from the sunny UK, they are one of the few places in the area to serve a traditional roast dinner - every day! Other dishes include steakand-ale pies, and a twoperson mixed grill or Paella Valenciana. They even have their own unique “Oyster Catcher” sauce.

Their specials change daily, depending on the availability of the fresh products, and, once these dishes are gone, they’re gone! So, get in there quickly. They’re open 11am-

11pm, seven days a week. You may have noticed that I haven’t yet mentioned desserts; I was saving the best until last. The selection included Lemon Cheesecake and Toffee

Lumpy Bumpy, and a range of fruit flambés. And, of course, our favourite Crepe Suzette, doused in local liqueurs. If these don’t get your taste buds tingling, nothing will.

Borja makes difference CD Tenerife 2 Al Wasl, Dubai 1 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife update

PHEW, that was a close shave! And I don’t just mean the savage new haircut sported by Tenerife defender Nahuel. When Al Wasl, Dubai were announced as their first opponents at Marbella Football Centre’s training camp, the reaction was: Who? But they frustrated Tenerife for much of the game, and took a penaltygoal lead, before two late strikes spared their blushes with a 2-1 victory. Al Wasl were a tight, wellorganised side, but they didn’t appear to have any stand-out players in the early stages. Angel Galvan, starting in the Tenerife goal, got a touch to a corner, and Carlos Ruiz completed the clearance with a header. But Suso was soon testing them at the other end after rounding a defender. Yet warning signs started

wide free-kick and a shot at Angel. But it all went wrong after 50 minutes, when a clumsy trip by Jorge Saenz enabled Caio to send Angel the wrong way from the penalty spot. Carlos Abad took over between the Tenerife sticks, while another sub, Faradi, came close to levelling with a shot on the turn. The Al Wasl keeper raced out to block a hesitant Malbasic, before the second water-break arrived, sparking more player-changes. Luis Milla, a welcome addition, was soon involved in the best Tenerife moves, and his snap-shot just over the bar deserved better. Borja became the unexpected Tenerife hero, when, after 86 minutes, he tucked in a nice pass from Faradi to make it 1-1 with his first senior goal. Then, in the dying seconds, Malbasic played a great cut-back to Borja, who controlled the ball well and finished sweetly. Not a convincing win, though, and plenty for the coach to get his teeth into.

to show after Brazilian Caio flashed a shot across the Tenerife goalmouth. Borja Llarena, a 19-yearold forward prospect, who was in the Tenerife starting line-up, had a chance as he ran on to a Nahuel pass, but his shot went wide. It was mighty hot on the mainland, and even the teams from scorching Tenerife and Dubai were feeling it, so the ref allowed water breaks in each half. Al Wasl were refreshed after the 25th-minute thirst-quencher, with Caio beating Nahuel on the right and putting in a splendid cross, only for Ronaldo Mendez to shave the post with his effort. The two Dubai players were starting to look good, and Tenerife needed to tighten their focus. Joao Rodriguez, who was having a quiet game on the left, beat his marker and was a little unlucky when his acute-angled shot trickled along the goal-line and out of play. Malbasic came on for the second half and added some weight to the Tenerife attack, but Mendez had the better chances, with a

Tenerife’s Sunday best

TENERIFE players were purring on the plane back from their Marbella training camp, having secured a second warm-up success. It came via a real cracker from Alberto, which sealed Sunday’s victory over Almeria, a rival in the Segunda Division season to come. Pre-season friendlies are notoriously unreliable as form indicators, but coach Joseba Etxeberria will be pleased to see the squad gelling together well. New Chelsea loanee Joao Rodriguez missed the game with a leg-muscle injury, but Paco Montañes took his left-side role and continued to show what a good player he is, now that he is free from his haunted campaign last season. He forced an early corner after good build-up work from his team-mates, and

Almeria 0 CD Tenerife 1 Bryan Acosta was in good nick with a speedy break, which had Almeria backpedalling. The only goal came after just 16 minutes. Malbasic used his strength to win the ball for Alberto, whose shot was hit with power and precision into the top corner of the goal. Joseba may yet get his wish to keep big Serbian forward Malbasic. The coach wants some muscle up front, and nifty footwork in the transfer market has freed up some wriggle-room for the striker’s big wages. Just after the half-hour, Malbasic again showed what he brings to the party when he blasted a shot at the home keeper. But Almeria looked livelier in the second half, although keeper Dani Hernandez made light work of a strong downward header, while Raul Camara, on for

Suso, used his experience to deny another Almeria chance. The usual raft of warmup changes altered the Tenerife line-up, but they all worked hard for each other, which is another trait the coach likes to see. Undabarrena, one of the replacements, is a nononsense ball-winner with a calm head, and he looks to be a good signing. Borja was given another 10-minute spell late on to continue his education, and Faradi again looked comfortable on the wing. The win kept Tenerife’s unbeaten, pre-season run going, and they are aware that there will be tougher tests ahead, and, maybe, more new faces. But so far, so good! The build-up to the league season continues tomorrow (Saturday) at El Fraile, with a 8pm kick off against Ibarra.

Phoenix out with a bang! IT was a sad night, last Friday, as Phoenix Bar played their last game at the venue, before its closure. But the darts team went out with a bang, earning a superb 5-3 victory over The Pub’s high-fliers. John and Mitch had finishes of 145 and 161, before POD hit a maximum for the home team, and Joel replied with a 180 for their rivals. Good luck to all at the Phoenix, who have given all of us some wonderful memories in the past. Suters 20:30 Crew are unstoppable, this week putting Ourplace Playboys to the sword with Sam’s latest 180. They lost just one leg all night, to complete an 8-0 win. Gaffers had a stand-in for them when Steven stepped up to the oche and scored two maximums, as they ended Pas O Nadas ‘A’s unbeaten start to the season. Despite a 15-darter from Daddy Cool, the home side emerged with a 6-2 victory. Marilyns ‘A’ travelled to Mad Hatters, and, before they had blinked,

found themselves 3-0 down. However, they rallied and stole the rest of the show, to emerge 5-3 winners. Picassos Pool Bar left it late when hosting Sandys, but, after some excellent darts, they took the trebles and a 5-3 win. The division’s only draw came at Palms Pool Bar, where Legends spoiled the night for Dennis and all, by taking the team game. But they pledge not be so gentle on the return. Emerald Lounge ‘B’, visiting local rivals The Loch-In Bullseyes, emerged victorious from a close contest after winning the 701 game to take the match 5-3. Palms Sports Bar were welcomed to the league by just about everyone, except, perhaps, Ourplace Playgirls, whom they beat 5-3, courtesy of the trebles, to complete a telling debut. Pas O Nadas ‘B’ welcomed Clouseau’s, and, after some fantastic arrows and close games, Ed’s 180 was not enough to stop the home side recording a 5-3 win.

Emerald Lounge were looking for all the points as they hosted Waterfall. But the visitors rescued their evening by claiming the final game and a 4-4 draw. Nauta Nomads welcomed Sundowners and played their best darts of the season, which earned them a 6-2 victory. Scruffy Lads went to Break-

aways, and, following some great darts, won 6-2, while Marilyns ‘B’ played out a 4-4 draw at home to Naughty Nautas. San Blas teams occupy the first three positions in this division, with Emerald Lounge ‘B’ leading, followed closely by Scruffy Lads and The Loch-In Bullseyes. Dave Handleigh has, sadly,

resigned from the committee, and we wish him well in his future endeavours. We also thank him for the hard work he has put in over the years. Next Friday (10th August) sees the singles finals, so please send entries to Martin Land on Facebook, by email or text please. Numbers in handbook.

Wheeling and dealing PLAYERS aren’t the only people with some fancy moves, because CD Tenerife’s management had a frantic Friday last week as they fine-tuned the squad… and turned a profit!

Striker Juan Villar, who hit nine goals last season, but had constant injuries that restricted him to just 23 games, was the key to unlocking negotiations. Osasuna took the gamble to sign him for 850,000 euros with a further 300,000 euros if

he meets certain conditions on appearances and goals. The striker said he had decided at the end of last season not to stay with Tenerife, so it was a good bit of business. That lit the touch-paper for the arrival of Jose Naranjo, a much-sought-after striker, aged 24, who checked in on a four-year deal after leaving Belgium club Genk. The initial fee is 400,000 euros, with a further 1m euros, if he gets Tenerife promoted into the Primera. There were also a few bits of tidying up to do. Juan Carlos Real moved to Almeria on a one-year contract, plus an option for a second year.

And B-team player Nadjib, a fringe senior player a couple of seasons ago, was loaned to Badalona in the division between those the two Tenerife sides play in, for a chance to be tested at a higher level. Third keeper Carlos Abad and defender Jorge are still in limbo, as they wait to see whether they will be shipped out. To add further cheer to the weekend, it emerged that outstanding midfielder Bryan Acosta had turned down an approach from American League FC Dallas. The Honduras player was offered a huge salary hike, yet he still decided to stay with Tenerife.

Nico nicked from neighbours NICO Brussino, slotting in nicely to the Iberostar Tenerife jigsaw, has been tempted away from inter-island rivals Gran Canaria, for whom he played after arriving in December. The wide player was convinced to make the move by fellow-Argentine and Tenerife captain Nico Ricchotti. At 25, the new arrival has a wealth of experience, not just in his home country, but also in the NBA. Spells at Dallas Mavericks

and Atlanta Hawks have made him a good allrounder, who can make a big contribution to the new-look squad being assembled by returning

coach Txus Vidorretta. Training has started at the La Laguna club, but, with another month until the league starts, there’s lots of work to do.

Windsurfing

Sky-high thrills in Medano JUST ahead of their pre-season training, a few of the Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife players are enjoying games on the international stage. New signings Aline Reis and Joyce Borini have been wearing the yellow shirt of Brazil in the Tournament of Nations, in the US, in West Hartford. The duo started with a 2-0 win over Japan, and also played against the

US last night (Thursday). Meanwhile, returning player Natalia Ramos maintained the gold standard by helping Spain Under-19s to a second successive win in the European Championship in Zaragoza, beating Germany 1-0 in Biel. The women should have plenty to enthuse about when they return to their Granadilla team-mates to join their build-up to the first home league game, against Real Sociedad at San Isidro, on 9th September.

EXTRA-TIME E SPORTS are making a bid for Olympic recognition, with the Canary Islands pushing their case. They didn’t have computer-based sports in ancient Greece, but the surge in interest has led to calls for them to be part of the four-yearly games. Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo is lobbying for their step-up to the big platform. Tenerife has become quite a centre for E Sports, and the annual Lan Party in Santa Cruz is a huge hit, as are the big youth tournaments in Los Cristianos.

WORLD CUP 2030 could be heading for England. The FA have said they are running a feasibility study on making a bid, and, if it looks possible, they will start the ball rolling next year. To get the nod, they will need UEFA backing, and support from a majority of the 211 FIFA nations. Joint bids have become very popular, especially because, from 2026, the finals will include 48 teams and last longer. It could come down to a joint bid from the home nations. So far, Argentina have said they will bid, while Uruguay and Paraguay are planning to team up, and Morocco may offer a solo bid, or link arms with Algeria and Tunisia.

PREPARE to crane your neck to see the world’s top windsurfers defy gravity, as they twist and turn through the skies of El Medano. The elite 70 men and women of the Professional Windsurfers’ Association, drawn from 18 countries, are back to show off their artistry and speed from Sunday (5th August) until next Saturday (11th). And this amazing spectacle is free to everyone! The PWA Tour, making its way from Hawaii to Japan, and, most recently, to Fuerteventura, is nearing its climax in slalom and freestyle events. But it’s much more than a competition because El Medano will be in party mood at the pits, and in the

entertainment area at El Cabezo beach. It all takes off with a grand parade of contestants around the town, from 7.30pm on Sunday. The Fuerteventura leg saw Sara Quita Offinga (Aruba, Netherlands) and Golito Estrado (Venezuela) take the women’s and men’s freestyle titles, respectively, but the search for points in the PWA Tour ensures keen competition from all competitors. As you enter El Medano from the southern resorts, you will see many more amateurs filling the skies with kite and windsurfing moves. But the big competition is at El Cabezo, just beyond the pier walkway and around the headland. Wind and wave conditions dictate the speed at which they get through the

competition. If all is well each day, entrants will compete from 10am until dusk, and finish a day or two early. And even after the main event, there will be a further competition to show off tricks and skills. For up-to-date info on the state of play, check out the PWA Tour on the main social-media sites. The riders to watch are Philip Koster (Germany), Victor Fernandez (Spain), Daniel Bruch (Germany), Alex Mussolini (Spain), and, in the women’s event, Gran Canaria twins Daida and Iballa Ruano, who have a remarkable 29 world titles between them. Commentators, employing several languages, will keep the crowds informed of which riders are performing their set runs, over the PA system.
