Judge opens murder probe Cont. from Front His decision, in Court No.3 of Arona, followed a hearing that lasted the whole of Monday afternoon. The judge has also decided to open a full murder investigation, after hearing evidence from the Judicial Police Organic Unit and the Guardia Civil. The judge was told that the 38-year-old woman had planned to flee to Cuba on Monday, having purchased flight tickets at a cost of 3,000 euros. And she had fully-packed suitcases in her car when arrested. The woman, who had rushed from the murder scene, was arrested in Granadilla, just hours after the assault, by police officers working

under “Operation Indiana”. She had been identified by several residents in the area. It was alleged that “she had been smoking crack all night on the streets, in front of her seven-year-old daughter”. The stabbing took place at around 10am, when police received several calls, informing them that a seriously-wounded man was lying in the entrance of a Cabo Blanco building at Paseo Santa Julia. When an ambulance arrived, medics found the man in cardiac arrest, but were, eventually, able to resuscitate him. He was taken to Candelaria Hospital, where he later passed away.

Minor earthquake, just beneath Teide

Ryanair’s still under the cosh UNDER-SIEGE airline Ryanair has received notice of pilot strikes in two countries this week, and its officials believe that unions in two other countries will co-ordinate walkouts at the same time.

THE National Geographic Institute (IGN) has registered an earthquake of 2 degrees on the Richter scale, just below Mount Teide. The tremor took place at 12.30am on Tuesday, some two kilometres deep, under the volcano. A tremor of this scale is classed as a “micro earthquake”, which can’t be felt by people. But seismographs are able to detect them, and around 8,000 occur worldwide on a daily basis.

The strikes could lead to the cancellation of flights across Europe during the peak holiday season. Last Friday, some of their Irish pilots staged their fourth strike, and the budget airline now says it has received notice of strikes by pilot unions in Belgium and Sweden today (Friday). An airline spokesman added that it had also been notified of possible strike actions by pilot unions in Germany and the Netherlands, which, they believe, “will occur and be coordinated” on the same date. The Irish company says it has written to each of the unions, invited them to meet to make further progress, in concluding union recognition and collective labour agreements. It adds: “In the interim, we have requested these pilot unions to give us seven days’ notice of any planned strike action so that we can notify our customers of cancelled flights in advance, and offer them alternative flights or refunds.” Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has threatened again to transfer more staff

and aircraft to Poland if the strikes continue. At a Vienna press conference, he said that he would cut jobs “in any market” if the walk-outs continue. “If we have people who just want to have strikes for the sake of having strikes, then they can have strikes and they’ll find themselves (with) jobs getting moved and aircraft getting moved.” As well as the industrial action, the airline is facing air-traffic control problems across Europe. “Customers on impacted flights have been notified by SMS text and email,” said a spokesperson. To add to their mounting problems, Ryanair appears to have shot itself in the foot, by withdrawing the 75% discount offered to all residents of the Canary and Balearic Islands to travel to the Peninsular. It does not comply with the current regulations adopted by the Spanish Government,

which has approved the deal. Ryanair was ordered to put this into practice on 16th July. But although other airlines offering flights from Canary Islands’ airports to the Peninsular applied the discount, Ryanair said it would delay proceedings. The Association of Consumers and Users of the Balearic Islands (Consubal) this week denounced Ryanair, because the 75% discount cannot be applied on its website for travel to the Peninsular. The airline said it would delay its application. Ryanair has made no response to this new complaint, but residents of the Canary Islands should consider using other airlines. The Association of Consumers and Users of the Balearic Islands this week denounced Ryanair, saying: “This new irregularity of the airline is the last straw, and the authorities must act forcefully against a company which, continuously, mocks its customers and ignores the law.”

AN opinion survey poll reveals that Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) would win a general election, should one be called early. The poll, from the Sociological Research Centre (CIS), found that almost 30% of its respondents would vote for the PSOE in an early election, even though the party came to power two months ago after a noconfidence motion. Adriana Lastra, the party’s spokesperson in the Congress of Deputies, said it was the first time since 2009 that the PSOE had topped the survey. Joint-second in the poll was the conservative Partido Popular (PP), ousted from government following the motion, with 20.4% of respondents backing them. Centrist Ciudadanos party was

But she took it to the letter.” The businesswoman said she was unaware of what had happened “until family and friends called us and told us about it. It has been

Cabildo spends 17m euros enhancing the TITSA fleet TENERIFE bus company TITSA has awarded a whopping 16,824,993-euro contract to four separate companies and coach-builders, to provide 74 new buses.

TITSA (Transportes Interurbanos de Tenerife), the Cabildo-owned firm, says the vehicles, to be used in the metropolitan areas in the South and North of the island, will be added to its service next year. The funds have been contributed by the Cabildo, the island’s governing body, which has confirmed the deal. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso has ensured that this new acquisition will strengthen the commitment to public transport, to solve the island’s mobility problems. He added that the new vehicles would enable TITSA to continue advancing its expansion

and renewal of the fleet, lowering the buses’ average age by 4.7 years. The contract includes six lots of vehicles, with two of the lots awarded to Scania Castrosua, which will see the arrival of three 12-metre, hybrid, suburban buses. The company will also build five, articulated, suburban buses, of 18m in

length. These buses are the result of a public tender, conducted by TITSA within the second Framework Agreement for 2019-2023, and not through the usual rental system, for the renewal of the fleet every seven years. This new batch of vehicles will be added to the 29 buses already

Moroccans assaulted tourist from England

TWO Moroccan youths have were arrested on a Las Américas beach, having sexually assaulted an English tourist there.

The girl met one of the accused men last Saturday night, and arranged to meet him the next day in a wellknown nightclub. He was accompanied by a friend, and, from there, the couple went to a nearby beach with the intention of having a little more privacy. While they were having sex, the boy’s pal approached, which put the girl off wanting to continue. But

the men grabbed her and forced her to have sex with both of them. The Las Americas beach they were on is well known to the island’s surfers, and, during her struggle, two young people, one of them an off-duty policeman, were preparing to surf. But they heard the victim’s screams, and the assailants, realising they had been interrupted, tried to scarper. But the officer and his companion were able to contain them until officers from the Local Citizen Security Brigade arrived. The two Moroccans are currently awaiting trial in Arona courts.

DIANA Perona Krenova, the teenager who disappeared 10 days ago, in the El Tablero area of Santa Cruz, has returned to her family, safe and sound. The National Police confirmed that the 16-year-old had contacted her mother last Sunday. Officials of the SOSD Association for Missing Persons, which publicised her disappearance, are delighted with the public support, and her re-emergence at the family home, fit and well.

Kiosks hold up traffic

THE installation of new kiosks at Las Teresitas beach means a traffic lane will be closed, along with parking close to the beach, to enable the work to be completed. The restrictions will prevent the circulation of traffic, to allow the unloading of materials and necessary equipment. Residents and visitors to the Santa Cruz beach are asked to respect the traffic directions until the kiosks are in place.

Discharged sewage nightmare

SANTIAGO del Teide Council is keeping the Playa Chica beach closed until the water is suitable for bathing again. It had been shut down because of a sewage discharge, caused by the breakdown of an engine at a local treatment plant. This was down to an accumulation of sanitary materials in the sewerage network, but the problem now appears to have been solved. Yet the beach has been flying a red flag, which means it is not yet safe to swim in the sea until tests show that the discharged sewage has dispersed.

Our Wonder Woman Islands

TENERIFE and Fuerteventura will be transformed into film locations for the Wonder Woman 1984 film, early next month. And in Fuerteventura, preparations for filming are already underway. La Oliva and Pajara will be the main locations, and the island will benefit by over 20m euros. Both islands have already become favourites for many blockbuster films over recent years. The most important attraction for many large film companies is the financial incentives offered by the islands, which have contributed to the growth of the film industry on the islands. It is also a great boom for both Canary Islands.

CIVIL Protection service vehicles, along with ambulances and fire engines, will now have flashing blue lights rather than orange ones in Spain, including the Canary Islands, according to the Government. Until now, police cars alone featured blue, emergency lights, while all other “priority” vehicles had orange ones. These included slow-moving cars, vans and lorries, wide loads, and those needed to block

the carriageway to carry out a vital public service. This has always led to confusion among other road-users, as they were never been sure which vehicles they were allowed to pass. While drivers pull on to hard-shoulders, and even pavements, to let ambulances and fireengines pass, they would not need to do so for a maintenance vehicle. This will bring Spain in line with other EU countries, which is particularly important in France and Portugal, where Spanish vehicles have to attend to emergency services in border areas.

As well as the change in the lights, from orange to blue, registration plates on commercial vehicles will now be different. They will be yellow for those which could produce an obstruction, and blue for emergency and priority vehicles. Also, taxi drivers will have blue registration plates with white characters on the back, and white ones with black characters on the front. Taxi-owners have a year to change their plates, to comply with the law. The idea is for customers to be able to tell, immediately, whether the cab they are hailing is legitimate.

Kite-surfer hurt in El Médano A FRENCH wind-surfer, aged 49, was injured in an accident at El Medano on Tuesday afternoon.

The accident happened shortly before 4pm, and the victim had to be rescued by firefighters because the area was inaccessible to ambulance paramedics. He was suffering from head and shoulder injuries, and, after being stabilised, was taken to Hospiten Sur.

Officers wreck gang of peoplesmugglers

Under-fire Clavijo vows: I’ll stay put! C A N A R I A N G o v e r n m e n t President Fernando Clavijo is adamant he will not consider resigning, even if called to testify in a major public-funds investigation by the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC). But he will be forced to if the Prosecutor’s request is accepted in the socalled “Grúas” case,

which is investigating the misappropriation of public funds. Clavijo was quiet when tackled about it, especially after talking with his lawyer, He said that until last Monday morning, he had not received “any information or notification” which, officially, confirmed the new steps taken by the prosecution. It refers to the case opened by the court after officials, allegedly, found irregularities in the municipal Grua service of La Laguna between 2011 and 2015, when Clavijo was Mayor.

But the Canarian chief, accompanied by the Environment and Finance Councillors Nieves Lady Barreto and Rosa Dávila, was emphatic. Clavijo said that a request for his resignation, for being investigated, would be “absurd”. And he refused to make hyperthetical forecasts in the legal and political field, because, he added: “I do not make fictional policies.” He also maintained that the decisions taken at that time, to return the services to the public sector, were endorsed by officials of La

Laguna Town Council and their legal services. Of the decision, he said: “It guaranteed public service, and did not generate any type of bankruptcy for the municipal coffers.” He is confident that his attitude towards this issue, which could lead him to the bench as an investigated person, “will continue to be a total collaboration with justice”. Clavijo then added: “All actions were in the general interest of the city of La Laguna, to guarantee public services.” The case continues.

Terrorist recruiters nabbed by Guardia GUARDIA Civil officers have smashed a jihadist terrorist recruitment network in Spain, following an operation stretching back to the end of 2015. Two Moroccans, aged 46 and 36, accused of searching out and radicalising young people, willing to fight in conflict zones, have been arrested. They were said to have woven their propaganda web from the Barcelona town of Mataro, where they spread their tentacles throughout the province, and into Tarragona. The Guardia have been keeping a close eye on the

network for three nearly years, and, finally, they decided it was time to move in, because Spain remain on a Level Four terrorist alert.

The accused are said by Guardia Civil to have specialised in on-line propaganda, to radicalise and recruit terrorists. International law agencies

from several countries joined forces to monitor the internet activities of several suspects, believed to be part of the network.

SPAIN’S National Police officers have arrested seven people, suspected of large-scale, migrant-smuggling, with an organised gang. They smuggled the migrants from Frenchspeaking African countries to Northern Spain, and from there to France. The gang members were able to get almost 300 migrants into France. The group, made up of individuals of sub-Saharan origin, arranged for migrants to be smuggled from French-speaking African countries Guinea, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali and Senegal, to Spain by boat, usually providing them with fake documents. Once they had arrived at the Spanish coast, the migrants were contacted by gang members, who arranged for their transfer to safe houses in Northern Spain, and from there on to France. But, with the support of Europol’s European Migrant Smuggling Centre (EMSC), the National Police have torn the group apart, arresting six people in Gipuzkoa, northern Spain, and one person in Madrid. Eight migrants awaiting to be smuggled to France were also rescued, from a safe house in Gipuzkoa. Europol supported the investigation as well, with analytical capabilities, plus the deployment of an expert to San Sebastian in Spain.

San Miguel go-ahead for its housing grants PEOPLE living in San Miguel de Abona resident can now apply for a series of grants to renovate their properties, or help with rent payments. The Town Hall has given the official go-ahead, having published the deadline dates for their State Housing Plan 2018-2021, in the Official Bulletin of the Canary Islands. There are five main areas for grants: *Rental assistance *Renovation for the improvement of energy efficiency *An assistance programme for young people under 35 *Renovation for conservation *Renovation for increased accessibility and more facilities To access the rent subsidies,

applicants must be of legal age and have a rental contract, which shows their habitual residence, but whose income is equal to, or less

than, 500 euros per month, or, in the case of a large family, 600 euros monthly. The beneficiaries will be granted a 40% subsidy of

their monthly rent, and, in addition, beneficiaries who are aged 65 or over this year, may be granted up to 50% of their monthly rent.

This grant will be for two consecutive years, 2018 and 2019, so that the beneficiaries will have assistance for the two annuities. The deadline for this is on Tuesday 28th August, 2018. Likewise, application for grants in all other areas, such as home improvements etc, closes on Tuesday, 4th September. Cabbies call off strike, for now! TAXI firms in Spain’s main cities have called a temporary halt to their blanket strike, which has caused chaos in airports and stations throughout the last week. Protests staged by cab drivers saw three of them arrested, and led to around 60 reports of vandalism and other disturbances, including attacks on Cabify and Über cars. But drivers do not consider their industrial action to be over completely. They say they have merely called “a

truce”, and that they will “remain vigilant” to ensure their demands are complied with. José Ábalos, Spain’s Public Works Minister, has proposed Spain’s 17 regional governments work on an across-the-board legal framework, allowing car-pooling or car-anddriver-hire schemes to be regulated and limited. This structure is expected to be on the table by next month, and cab drivers across the country, mostly in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and the La Rioja region, will refrain from striking until then. But, once approved in Parliament, the regulatory system is still unlikely

to be binding on all regional governments. It’s merely advisory, because transport falls within their jurisdiction, rather than that of the Spanish Government. But all regions affected by taxi strikes will probably apply the new limitations. Barcelona city council had previously decided to limit the number of Über and Cabify permits it awarded to one per 30 mainstream taxis. But Catalunya’s regional High Court of Justice overturned the rule. Taxi drivers complain that these transport networks are under-cutting them on price and costing them trade.

The sun sets on a magical trip!

THE sunsets in Tenerife can be pretty spectacular, and, with La Gomera as a backdrop, they are a special experience that visitors to Tenerife can enjoy. To make it that little more magical, we set sail on the Mustcat Catamaran, for their first sunset trip of the season.

We were warmly welcomed onboard by the crew, at the port of Las Galletas. Tommy was the main guide, and Sergio and David were at the helm. With a few, easy steps it was no effort to board, and there was a friendly photographer to take a nice photo of your group on the boat. We set off at 4.30pm on the beautiful, spotless, luxury catamaran. There was space onboard for all the guests, and it didn’t feel at all cramped. There was plenty of seating in shade or sun, and you could sit and look over the edge. There was netting at the front

where you could either lie and catch a few rays, or dangle your feet, just inches from the Atlantic Ocean. Tommy was very informative and friendly throughout the trip. He started by giving us some information on the general logistics, and an overview of the trip, and then we were off to find some of the marine life around Tenerife. We sailed out past Palm Mar and Los Cristianos, heading up the coast to see if we could spot some pilot whales. It didn’t take long to come across a whole family, and Tommy explained that, later in the day, the male Pilot whales like to sleep on the surface, because they normally hunt the giant squid in the morning, and rest in the afternoon. He pointed out the sleeping males, while the females and young were coming up right next to the boat. We slowed down and it was easy to see the whales. We had decided, at this point, to sit on the netting at the front. The whales felt close enough to touch, and it was a magical experience with them swimming just below our feet. We stayed with them for a good amount of time, giving everyone the

chance to see them, and take pictures or videos. Onboard, there was an open bar, with free-flowing beer, sangria, soft drinks and water. The crew were always there to serve us, and we could drink as much, or as little, as we wanted. During the entire excursion there was a friendly photographer capturing the magical experience of the guests on the trip, along with some of the best photos of Tenerife and its wildlife that the Mustcat team have taken. You can purchase a package as you leave the boat. Heading back from La

Caleta we sailed closer to shore past Del Duque, and Tommy was on hand to point out what we were seeing, and give interesting information about the buildings and landscape of Tenerife. While we were slowly cruising down the coastline, the paella was served. It was filled with delicious seafood, and there was also a vegetarian option available. We had goodsized portions, and there were even seconds available to those who wanted them. Coming up to the cliffs of Palm Mar, we were on the

hunt for dolphins. It didn’t take us long to spot some of the bottle-nosed variety, jumping alongside the boat. We started heading towards Las Galletas, and we spotted a couple of green sea turtles resting on the surface. The crew then positioned the boat so everyone could see the beautiful sunset. With the small lighthouse on the rocks, it was the perfect photo opportunity. Then it was back into the port to end a great trip. From the ages of 7-70, everyone had an amazing time. Political chief’s Gentlemen, give the fake degree? ladies a wide berth PABLO Casado, the new PP party leader, is being investigated over a Master’s degree he says he attained, because it is believed to be a fake. A probe into the way Casado obtained the law degree in 2009, at Madrid’s Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC), is being reviewed by the Supreme Court, which will decide whether to go ahead with the case. It comes after a Madridbased, investigative judge found irregularities in Casado’s qualification, which he obtained while performing as regional deputy for the Partido Popular. He has since admitted he did not attend classes or take exams, while the university waived more than 80% of his course work. If found guilty, 37-year-old Casado (pictured), will face crimes relating to accepting a gift offered through his public position, as well as

abetting unlawful decisions by civil servants. Remarkably, this is the second fake-degree scandal the PP has faced this year. Former Madrid President Cristina Cifuentes was forced to resign in April, when it was revealed that she had failed to complete her Master’s qualification, at the same university! Respected daily newspaper El Pais reports that there are now seven people from URJC, including teachers and former students, being investigated in relation to the degree.

For more than a year, authorities have been trying to find solutions to the increase in prostitution, on a road running through its municipality. The local council believes that prostitution, especially when it comes to those who encourage it by financing it, remains a big secret. “Until now, the client used to pay the fine to police in cash, there and then, so there was no record of the offence,” Equality Minister Gemma Badia told Spanish daily ABC. “It was a ‘nothing-has-happenedhere’ situation.” As a result, authorities

have decided police officers in this red zone, on the outskirts of Barcelona, should send the fines to clients’ home addresses, hopefully to dissuade those with families from using the services of local sex-workers again. Even if clients insist on paying before the fine is posted, they will still receive a letter informing them, and, quite possibly, their family members, on the settlement. Gavà has also bumped up the penalties to 750 euros, for being caught negotiating with a prostitute, and 3,000 euros for being stopped in the act while near a school, or children’s playground. According to Gavà authorities, their new sex-

work measures are based on the Swedish model. That relates to a 1999 law, which criminalises “buying” but not “selling” sex. It has proved so successful that Norway, Iceland and Canada have also copied it. For this reason, the Catalan Council will also stop fining sex-workers, as they did previously. Gavà will be working in partnership with the neighbouring towns of Viladecans and Castelldefels, as they are also affected by the sexworkers, plying their trade on the C-31 motorway. They will also hang up banners in the area with slogans such as: “Are you having fun? She isn’t!” and “Don’t be an accomplice.”

Terrorist planned an attack in Spain The taunted bull leaps on to the wooden platform

A MOROCCAN man, arrested on suspicion of belonging to the ISIS terrorist group, is believed to have been planning an attack in Spain. Police say the 21-year-old, who works as a ticket-seller for the Algeciras-Morocco ferry, had formed a cell in Algeciras with another suspect, who was arrested last year. The pair, said police, were hoping to indoctrinate and recruit new members, while attempting to bring ISIS fighters into the country. The unnamed suspect was

picked up in Vitoria, in the Basque Country, where he worked in a ticket office next to a petrol station there, during the summer. An internet cafe in Algeciras, and two Vitoria homes, were also raided in the police operation. The man arrested was known for being part of radical jihadist circles in Algeciras, where he usually lives. He soon became noticed when, more than a year ago on social media, he began defending the violent actions of groups like ISIS. But locals had no idea of his violent inclinations and plans to facilitate mass murder. One petrol-station worker

said: “They seemed to be nice kids. They ate here, and we made them pizzas all the time.” All the while, though, the suspect was holding secret meetings in Morocco, and online, to plot terrorist attacks in Spain. He persuaded one individual to come to the country, “using illegal immigration networks” operating in the Strait of Gibraltar. The target was promised he would be given the means, both economically and materials-wise, to carry out an attack, when he landed in Spain. But the convert was arrested in Morocco at the end of last year, before the plans could be hatched.

Bull bruises man’s ego…and his body A MAN who taunted a bull from a wooden platform, during a bull-run in Spain, has suffered severe bruising of his ego, and his body, after being hurled through the air. He was recording a video on his mobile from the “safety” of a wooden platform during the Benitachell celebrations in the Marina Alta region of Valencia. The man can be seen in the video, wiggling his fingers in front of the bull’s nose,

before it jumped on to the platform, smashing into his antagonist and him knocking him to the ground. Local officials described the man as being in forties, and “English-speaking”, but his nationality was not known. He was transferred to a local health centre with severe bruising, but at least he wasn’t gored. During the celebrations in the Valencian town, another bull collapsed and died, apparently from a heart attack. But it is not known whether the heat had affected the poor animal.

New mosquito virus is not that desperate

A NEW mosquito species has arrived in Spain for the first time, and it could be carrying a deadly virus, according to the Health Alerts and Emergencies Co-ordination Centre. But experts believe it is relatively safe. It started with a simple photograph of one of these creatures being sent to the Mosquito Alert site, from a concerned person in Asturias. He suspected that it was not one of the normal types of the pests found in the area, and he was asked to supply adult and larval specimens. It was confirmed that the sample was of the Aedes japonicus mosquito, normally found in Asia. To verify their decision, a field inspection was carried out at the site of the discovery, led by the

entomologists of Mosquito Alert, along with University of Zaragoza entomological team members. They concluded that, rather than them being a few “rogue visitors”, the mosquito type was now established in the area and could well spread further in time. Apart from giving an irritating bite, like most other mosquitos, it was felt that this breed had the capability to transmit several viruses, including the West Nile, Dengue and Chikungunya. But Roger Eritja, leader of the investigation, believes that the risk is low, and adds: “We must consider that the risk of transmission of these diseases depends on the number of mosquitos present, and whether the virus is circulating among the population. “At this time, we do not think the numbers are high, and, anyway, the conditions in Asturias are unlikely to encourage their growth.”

Diners are shocked as a mafia chief is seized

POLICE in Spain made a dramatic arrest, among others, in front of stunned diners at a busy Costa del Sol restaurant in southern Spain, seizing a man they believed to be the Russian mafia’s No.3 worldwide. National Police officers pinned the wanted man to the ground in front of

those dining at the Marbella eaterie, as part of their investigations into murders, associated with a criminal organisation, and false documentation. It follows on from an operation last June, when 129 people were arrested. It is believed that those arrested were planning the imminent execution of a rival gang member, who was planning to settle in Spain, to demonstrate the strength of the group’s hold in Europe.

And, says Núria Ricart, while sandpapering an antique drawer: “There could be someone out there who could help you with a lot of things you don’t know about.” This retired librarian, who has spent months learning how to restore antiques, is now offering her experience to other people on Phyltime, an online platform which helps seniors share their skills and find activities. “I thought I was pretty clumsy, and I was a bit scared about painting, but I like antiques and I thought, ‘why don’t I learn how to restore them?’” adds Núria. In a small studio in Barcelona’s Sarrià neighbourhood, she and her classmates spend their afternoons among paintbrushes and varnish. But nowadays, it’s less about the restoration and more an excuse to leave the house and meet up with her new friends. “I applied because I wanted to continue feeling active, even if I were no longer working, and, in the process, I wanted to meet new people,” says the 72-yearold. While she barely knows how to use a cellphone, she checks her notifications on the Phyltime app excitedly, every day. Be it a

POLICE sources have been informed that some 50,000 illegal migrants, from sub-Saharan Africa, are on the alert in Morocco, awaiting the word to cross into Spain.

The warning comes after 21,000 migrants had made the extremely dangerous journey across the sea, to seek asylum in Europe. Spain has become the No.1 point of migrantarrival in 2018, following the country’s invitation for open borders, by the socialist government. And, according to El Mundo newspaper, North Africa is becoming a “pressure cooker”, with at least 50,000 African migrants desperate to cross into the European country, via the Strait of Gibraltar. Human smugglers are, apparently, helping migrants bypass border controls in Morocco, with the promise that Spain is their ‘paradise’. Police sources have even likened the desperate situation to the “Crisis of the Cayucos”, when thousands of migrants risked their lives in wooden

boats called cayucos to reach Spain’s Canary Islands in 2006. Migrants make their way to Morocco, cross through the Sahel area after paying the mafias, then elude the lax southern border controls in Morocco, revealed the El Mundo investigation. Specialists believe this method is becoming more frequent and more violent, as the mafias’ desperate clientele reaches staggering numbers, and continues to grow. Just weeks ago, over 700 migrants stormed the fence separating Morocco from Spain’s north African enclave of Ceuta, which has been the most violent incident to date, say the Guardia Civil. Migrants came equipped with means to get around the concertinas (big coils of wire), as well as using quicklime against agents guarding the border, four suffering significant burns and a further 22 also injured. The Spanish Association of Civil Guards (AEGC) confirmed in a statement that the immigrants “sprinkled quicklime, excrement and rust” on the agents, and 22 have been treated for “chemical burns, inflamed eyes, bruises and respiratory disorders”.

Nine die from heat-stroke NINE people have now died, as a direct result of Spain’s sweltering heatwave, which means the sky-high temperatures have killed more than one person a day over the past week. A 66-year-old man died from heatstroke last Thursday in Extremadura, and a 75-year-old woman passed away two days later, also a victim of heat stroke. A German man, aged 40, who

was on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, also died from heat stroke in Extremadura, as did an 81-year-old man. The tragedies occurred as temperatures in southern Spain soared to just over 46C. Meanwhile, in Catalunya, three homeless men have died, as well as two men in Murcia: a roadworker in his forties and a 78-year-old pensioner.

Child-abuse network is hammered by cops POLICE in Spain have smashed one of the biggest childabuse networks operating across Europe and America.

Their raids enabled them to seize 16TB (terabytes) of data storage devices, containing some 2.4m pieces of footage of children, up to the age of eight years, being abused. The Spanish National Police, with the support of Europol and INTERPOL, arrested 19 members of one of the biggest child-abuse networks in Spain. House searches were carried out in several Spanish cities, and officers seized 11 laptops, 23 mobile phones, 11 hard drive disks, seven memory sticks, five memory cards and four tablets.

Pilot is found dead in airport car-park A RYANAIR pilot, aged 45, was found dead last Friday in an airport car-park at Malaga, on Spain’s Costa del Sol. Colleagues of Captain Jouke Schrale were said to be “in shock” over the tragedy after the pilot was believed to have killed himself, hours before a scheduled shorthaul flight. Dutchman Captain Schrale, known to his friends as Jake, was found dead in his vehicle in a staff car-park. Friday’s 8.30am flight from Malaga to Brussels was

delayed for several hours while a replacement pilot was found. Ryanair said: “His

colleagues are in deep shock. We offer our deepest sympathy.” The Sun newspaper reported that the Dutchman lived with his Belgian partner, Jessica, in nearby Mijas. A Facebook message said: “Rest in peace Captain Jouke Schrale. In this moment of sorrow, we express our most sincere condolences to the family, and we embrace each other in a fraternal embrace. High skies for you Captain!” A Ryanair spokesperson said: “His colleagues are in deep shock. We offer our deepest sympathy.”

Gang of burglars smashed by cops

A CROATIAN gang of sophisticated houseburglars, operating across Spain, have been broken up by the police. Ten people have been arrested for the spate of break-ins in Alicante, Murcia, Almeria, Valladolid and Malaga. The gang were based in Torrevieja, where they planned their raids methodically, and, curiously. the experts were the female group members. They employed plastic bottles or drinks cans, shaped to spring the locks of targeted homes, while the men

kept a look-out. Once in, they would help themselves to valuables before making their way back to Torrevieja. A police probe began in April, following a Cartagena burglary. Officers identified several suspects and put the gang under surveillance. In the finale of the operation, seven arrests were made in Torrevieja and three in Malaga, where they had, allegedly, just committed a burglary. Police discovered a large quantity of jewels, said to be the gang’s ill-gotten gains. Now, officers are trying to identify them to see if they have been reported stolen.

AUTHORITIES in Spain’s main tourist destinations have introduced measures to cut down their short-term holiday lets. Rents for residents have risen by an average of 1015% in the more desirable city areas in the last year, according to letting website Idealista. Critics of websites such as AirBnB and Homeaway claim that rising numbers of tourists, and an increase of landlords renting out apartments to them, has put the rent beyond what residents can afford. AirBnB says its services offer a chance for residents to profit from tourism, by renting out their apartments. But local governments have brought in guidelines, aimed at managing the sector and capping these escalating

prices. Councils are aiming to put a brake on the rising costs, which, they fear, are pricing locals out of tourist areas. Local authorities in Madrid have approved proposals from Mayor Manuela Carmena for regulating tourist accommodation. These include barring short-let tourists from using the same entrances to residential buildings as locals in the city centre. This would affect 95% of existing holiday rentals in the area, according to council estimates. Under the new plan, a housing unit, rented out to tourists for more than 90 days of the year, means the owner will have to apply for a commercial licence. Barcelona City Hall has shut down almost 2,400 unlicensed tourist apartments, as well as also making many sites withdraw their adverts

for irregular lets. The Special Plan for Tourist Accommodation bans the use of residential buildings for holiday lets. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colauhas asked the Spanish Government to reform legislation, making rental leases longer and capping prices. Meanwhile, fines for landlords, who attempt to force residents out to make way for tourist lets, have been activated. Measures requiring developers to set aside 30% of lets for affordable housing have also been passed. Mallorca’s Palma Council has approved holiday-rental regulations, including a ban on tourist apartments throughout the city, except for single-family homes in specific areas. But, a year ago, the Balearic Islands’ regional government passed a law allowing each island to decide whether or not to allow holiday rentals.

More than 11,000 people who were born in Sri Lanka have been adopted overseas, many growing up with little knowledge of the people or culture they left behind. In this film, two women - both adopted as babies - as they return to Sri Lanka to try to find their birth families. They are searching not just for their relatives, but also for their lost identity. Thirty eight year-old Rebecca was adopted from Sri Lanka when she was three months old, by a Sri Lankan couple living in London who worked hard to give her every opportunity they could, never telling her that she was adopted. For the first nine years of her life Rebecca thought that her adoptive family was her birth family. One evening after school, Rebecca found the adoption papers in the airing cupboard by accident. Since then she has been trying to find the truth about her birth and the family who brought her into the world. The film follows Rebecca as she returns to Sri Lanka for her third search, accompanied by her husband Anton and their youngest daughter. Over two weeks, they investigate the government ministries, shantytowns and hospitals that might offer up some clue as to her mother’s whereabouts. Her story is a powerful insight into the question a lot of adopted people ask: Can I find out who I really am, by finding my family? Twenty seven year-old Ria was adopted by a couple living in northern Scotland and had a very happy childhood, but always wondered what her life would have been if she had stayed in Sri Lanka - and what happened to her mother. Within the documentation she has about her adoption she has a photo, as well as a paragraph saying her birth mother wanted no contact after the adoption.

Over the last few years the story we have been hearing about British Asian men has been overwhelmingly negative. But for some British Asian communities there are real problems. In this personal film Mehreen Baig, a British-Pakistani woman, goes behind the headlines and meets a range of young men to understand their experiences of growing up in modern Britain. As a state school teacher, Mehreen saw British Asian boys from some communities falling behind. Now she wants to know why there are such huge disparities in how well different communities have integrated into the UK, why some are faring better than others in jobs and education, and why women from South Asian backgrounds are now outstripping their male peers. Mehreen begins her journey with British-Pakistani men. She travels to Bradford, which has the highest proportion of Pakistani residents of any British city. Here, there are signs that young BritishPakistani men are struggling: youth unemployment stands at 26 percent (nationwide the figure is 12 percent), and drug crime has risen in recent years, with British-Pakistani men making up a disproportionate number of convictions. Mehreen meets young men such as 17 year-old Luqman, who lives in one of the most deprived areas of the country, and who has been supporting his family since the age of 13 by working six days a week. And she talks to Nav, who grew up locally and left for university before dropping out. He gives Mehreen an insight into some of the attitudes that prevail around education in the community, and suggests some reasons why British-Pakistani boys are one of the worst performing groups at GCSE, and British-Pakistani girls are now outperforming them. And she meets some of the young recruits to a new business enterprise which is attracting lots of British-Pakistani men in the city. Setting the statistics in a historical context, Mehreen explores the story of Pakistani immigration to the northern towns of Britain, and how the closure of the mills and factories continues to influence the prospects of third and fourth-generation British-Pakistani men today. In Leicester, Mehreen meets British-Gujaratis like Paven, who is following in his family tradition of entrepreneurship, and at the age of just 18, is already running his third business. Mehreen learns about the history of Indian Gujarati immigration to the UK from Uganda, and how they brought with them a tradition for trade and commerce that has helped them establish successful businesses here. They are now one of the highest earning ethnic minority groups in the UK, and Mehreen wonders whether this economic success has allowed greater integration. In fact, Guajaratis are far more likely than any other British Asian group to live in multi-ethnic neighbourhoods and are twice as likely as British-Pakistanis to marry outside their ethnic group. Parle is another young British-Gujarati man, who is building a career as a writer and performer with online videos that playfully satirise some of the stereotypes within his own community. Mehreen talks to him about the expectations placed on young Asian men in Britain, and the link between financial security and cultural openness. Finally, Mehreen travels to Mirpur in predominantly rural Kashmir, where it is estimated that 70 percent of British-Pakistani families originate from, to understand how that community’s immigration story began. There, she meets a grandfather who was one of the first wave of immigrants to Britain in the 1960s, and some younger British-Pakistanis who are now making that same epic journey in reverse - returning to Pakistan from Britain in search of a better life there.

The Bombs That Changed Britain. During the Blitz over 450,000 bombs dropped on Britain, and every bomb has its own story. This second episode explores the ramifications of a bomb that fell on 6th Avenue in the port city of Hull, flattening two houses and changing the lives of two families. The Taylors lost baby Peter and 14-year-old Vera was very badly burned. Her sisters Doreen and Tina remember that terrible night and it is the first time they have talked about the trauma they endured. Next door, Mrs Owens had put three of her children under the stairs for safety but they sadly didn’t survive. Their sister Janet who was born after the war didn’t know about their existence until she was in her twenties. Her father was so traumatised that he refused to discuss anything to do with the Blitz. It means she has a lot of unanswered questions, which are finally answered when Janet meets Doreen and Tina, and she learns that her siblings were buried with baby Peter.

Today in the Repair Shop, Jay Blades and the team bring three treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life. Horologist Steven Fletcher works on a watch with an extraordinary story. Custodian and grandson of the original owner, Ron, has travelled from the Netherlands seeking Steve’s expertise. The timepiece was hidden in the owner’s dress for four years, while she was held in a prisoner of war camp during WW2. This delicate piece of history is painstakingly restored and returned to Ron and his family. Leather expert Suzie Fletcher turns her hand to an original Louis Vuitton trunk that has certainly seen the world but all those journeys have taken their toll. The trunk is battered and broken and the leather is desperate for attention. Suzie is determined to restore this one hundred year old case as sympathetically as she can, retaining as many of the original fixtures and details as she can. And blacksmith Dominic Chinea teams up with a master cooper to restore a butter churn that evokes many happy childhood memories for owner Carolyn.

Great British Menu is back, and this time the nation’s top professional chefs are competing for a chance to cook A Feast To Say Thank You at a glorious banquet celebrating 70 years of the NHS, one of Britain’s most prized institutions. This week it’s the heats for the North East region. Competing for top spot are Danny Parker, head chef at Michelin-starred House Of Tides in Newcastle, who is back to try his luck in the competition again after being knocked out in the regional heat last year, following a tense tie-break. He’s taking on two newcomers: Dan Fletcher, protégé of Phil Howard, and now head chef at Fenchurch in the City of London, and David Coulson, who runs Peace And Loaf in Newcastle, which boasts 2 AA rosettes. After nerves are set on edge when they meet their surprise veteran judge, the chefs get their starters underway. Danny’s dish, My NHS: North Teas, takes inspiration from the comfort provided at his local hospital with a restorative cup of tea, but can he elevate his humble set of ingredients?

Series exploring the secrets of our underwater world. The team investigates why parts of the Southern Ocean are warming twice as fast as the rest of the world’s oceans and looks at the impact of this phenomenon. Expedition leader Paul Rose, environmentalist Philippe Cousteau Jr, maritime archaeologist Dr Lucy Blue and marine biologist and oceanographer Tooni Mahto brave some of the roughest seas and the strongest winds on the planet. They go in search of one of the planet’s most curious and enigmatic creatures - the weedy sea dragon. They explore kelp forests to investigate how they are being threatened by the rise in sea temperatures and a new predator. They dive to one of the thousand shipwrecks in these waters, and in a unique sunken valley, they search for mysterious deep ocean creatures normally found hundreds of metres below the surface. And they enter a maze of perilous sea caves to hunt for evidence of ancient sea creatures that can reveal this ocean formed.

Virgin of Candelaria Festivity

This festivity, officially designated as being of National Interest to Tourism, has a highly religious and devotional component. It embodies five centuries of faith, belief and respectful love for the Virgin of Candelaria. Pilgrims from all corners of the island converge on Candelaria to pay tribute to their patron saint. Many spend the previous night trekking along the roads leading to the town. The celebration (closely associated with the world of Tenerife’s native inhabitants) is held on the evening of 14 August and includes the traditional floral offering to the Virgin, together with performances by an assortment of Canarian folk groups. The main square outside the Basilica stages the re-enactment of the apparition of the Virgin to Guanche natives, according to the tradition.

Descent of the Beeches 2018

La Guancha’s Descent of the Beeches takes its origins from the journey by owners of load-carrying livestock to the mountains to collect branches of beech trees, which were then used to decorate the town square and the streets for the religious procession. Thousands of visitors head to Garachico to take part in one of Tenerife’s most popular and traditional fiestas. Pilgrims converge on the small church of St Roch and the saint’s image is then carried to St Anne’s church in the town centre, where a religious service is held at noon. The popular country fair gets under way at 1pm. The image of the saint is taken back to its home church in a procession accompanied by a band, ox-drawn carts, flocks of animals, animals in harnesses, together with singing and instrumental groups. In parallel, Garachico fishermen stage a maritime procession, with their boats accompanying the image of the saint along the coast.

Our survey says… ENTERTAINMENT is made up of many varied and different c o m p o n e n t s , enabling a customer to be entertained by a great act, show or artiste, which include venue facilities, atmosphere, and environment.

Keddy's Entertainment are passionate about the overall customer experience, so we thought we'd do something a little bit different; a feedback factor which we consider to be extremely important. Our findings will be useful to report, because all feedback, so they say, is a gift! Recently, we undertook a live customer survey, and our fabulous Keddy's Entertainment manager, Natalie, literally hit the streets. She met folk, canvassing various views and opinions, directly from our very welcome visitors and residents. These weren't just about overt entertainment, but included the entire mix of our entertainment menu. This is what makes up valuable customer experience and a sure recipe for success. We thought we'd look at some “cando” practical measures, which, according to our interviewees, will help go a long way to create and enhance our customer experience, and under-pin the complete entertainment package. And the alternative flip side is not just considering that particular night's entertainment offering. Questions we included were: When choosing a venue, what do you look for? If you had a wish list, what might that be? Free beer, although a popular wish, is, unfortunately, not an option! What is missing for you, entertainment-wise? We thought it would be interesting to report on our “straight-from-the-horse'smouth” (or “hot-off-the-

press”) findings! Tribute acts featured highly as an attraction and draw, as did soul, motown and live bands. Drag acts and quizzes were also enjoyed. The calibre of entertainment was highly praised, within the shows, bars and hotels. A regular mention and gripe was the lack of comfortable seats in bars, with clean cushions. This was an element that drew and attracted many, especially the more-mature holidaymaker, who echoed this sentiment. Plastic or metaltype, hard chairs were a turn off, but our younger holiday makers weren't as worried about chairs being comfortable. Cold beer, with mats provided, was a definite must, especially in the heat we are experiencing in the height of summer. Toilets were also high on the list of essential criteria, with some people checking out how many loos there were, and cleanliness, moving on if

they weren't adequate. Happy, smiling staff were important, and some friendly banter was very well received. It's common sense, really, to most of us, but, according to our clients, sadly not always that common! Comperes remembering faces of returning customers was deemed very endearing and welcoming, and Happy Hours, at appropriate times, were also a good magnet, not at “silly o'clock”, as one chap put it! A common theme was the complete lack of entertainment for children. A family holiday booking with a hotel which doesn't provide children's entertainment means that they will look to bars and venues to provide some. Our survey suggested that there weren't many around! A clear resounding message was that more familyorientated entertainment would provide a muchneeded service. It would

plug a big gap for those families who weren't staying in hotels and accommodation, where familyfocused entertainment was provided. And, of course, it would help to increase revenue and business in bars, perhaps during quieter periods? This was firmly highlighted by a lovely family with two children, loudly endorsed by six-year-old Amy, and Owen, 8. We said we'd mention them! It was apparent that there was a lot of room for development in this area, regarding entertainment delivery. It's often on very late, with adult-themed entertainment provided, and maybe some karaoke, but not much is familyfocused. Feedback showed that something should be provided earlier in the evenings, before the adult entertainment begins. Most bars tend to start off around 9pm, so some children's

entertainment between 7-9 pm would be very well received. One quote that sums it up nicely, which, with pride, we're borrowing from Jim is: “Happy, entertained children let us have some well-deserved peace, with a few beers for me, and a couple of cheeky cocktails for the Mrs!” We had positive feedback about some excellent excursions, with daytime and evening events. However, some said that not much seems to have changed, so, once you've been, there didn't seem to be many opportunities for experiencing something different. Obviously, looking at these various elements and stands will assist in encouraging more repeat visitors. And, in an ever-changing competitive holiday world, to ignore such feedback would be at our peril. Repeat custom, and happy customers spreading the word, are what businesses and Tenerife want to achieve. These comments are a evidence-based gauge, and provide a guide in helping us plan our new ventures, to positively enhance our entertainment offerings. And they demonstrate that we are actively listening to our customers’ expectations and needs. Keddy's Entertainment are in the business of creating many happy memories, with lots more to come. So, what better way than to share what our survey told us. We always welcome constructive, focused feedback. So, on that note, all of us at Keddy's Entertainment want to thank those who took the time to stop and chat with Natalie, answering our questions and telling us much more. We are in the process of planning and developing new entertainment products. CHILE researchers Roberto Astete and Cristian Olivares have masterminded a new, biodegradable plastic bag, stumbling across the formula while experimenting with biodegradable detergent. The team used PVA, a polyvinyl alcohol that dissolves in water, as their chemical base, and then replaced the oil derivatives to ensure the bag would degrade over time. It is the oil derivatives in plastic bags which do not allow them to break down. Instead, they remain in the environment, causing serious harm to marine life and natural environments. “Our product comes from a limestone that does not hurt the environment,” assured Astete, general director of SoluBag, a company which hopes to start selling the bags in Chile from October. The Chilean Government has launched various initiatives to reduce the use of plastics, and, proudly, this month, it will become one of the first countries in Latin America to ban the use of traditional plastic bags in stores. The idea was first presented under the former government of President

How to combat our scary plastic, using hot and cold water!

Michelle Bachelet, who proposed a ban on plastic in coastal regions, and it was extended by current President Sebastián Piñera to the whole country. “It’s like making bread,” says Astete. “To make bread you need flour and other ingredients. Our flour is polyvinyl alcohol, and other elements, approved by the FDA [US Food and Drug Administration], which have allowed us to

create a prime material to make different products.” With the eyes of the press upon them, Astete and Olivares demonstrated two products: plastic bags that dissolve in cold water, and reusable canvas bags that break down in hot water. “What remains in the water is carbon,” says Astete, and medical tests show that it has “no effect on the human body”. To prove that what is left

behind in warm water is “harmless,” he drinks a few glasses of the liquid, then says: “The main difference between traditional plastic and ours is that traditional plastic remains between 150 and 500 years in the environment, and ours lasts just five minutes. “You can decide when to destroy it, so today, the recycling machine could be your saucepan or washing machine.” The same fabric that dissolves in hot water, which can then be used in a cup of tea or coffee, can be used to make reusable shopping bags or hospital products, like mattressprotectors, lab coats and doctors’ gloves, which are usually discarded after one use, says Olivares. Another advantage, the pair add, is that they protect against asphyxia, a cause of childhood accidents in the home. The bags dissolve when they come into contact with a person’s tongue or tears. And with mass production

planned (existing plastic companies can produce the bags simply by changing their formula), the team claim that the cost of SoluBags is likely to compare with current prices. Yet Astete and Olivares are not the first people to create biodegradable plastic bags. In 2009, Indonesian biologist Kevin Kumala launched Avani Eco, an ecofriendly company which makes biodegradable and compostable products. Kumala began the project when he returned to his home in Bali, after spending a decade in the US, and saw the once-pristine beaches strewn with plastic. In 2014, the world produced 311 million tons of plastic, and, if annual production continues at this rate, there will be more than 1.2 billion tons of plastic by 2050. Astete and Olivares hope to give people a way to minimise their damage to the environment by offering a product that can be destroyed when a person chooses… and not in 500 years! Their project not only won an award at this year’s Singularity University Chile Summit, but gave them the opportunity to travel to America’s Silicon Valley, in California’s San Francisco Bay area, for an internship at the Silicon Valley-based think tank.

Saddle-up for a unique town, which bans cars! HOW on earth would you cope if your hometown banned the use of cars altogether, and you grew up having to go shopping on your horse?

In Love Valley, residents call their streets “trails” instead of roads, lanes or even streets, because, in the Brushy Mountains of North Carolina, no cars are allowed. Yet the town offers the leisurely atmosphere of an old western community, offering wagon rides, board-walk strolls, shops, country stores and more. But is that enough for today’s civilisation? Love Valley, founded in 1954, was orchestrated by Andy Barker, who had two dreams: he wanted to live within a Christian community… and he always wished he could be

a cowboy! Ultimately, he was able to merge his two ambitions into one reality. Andy abandoned a secure job in nearby Charlotte, and moved to the mountains to realise these dreams. At the beginning of the town’s construction, Andy, with some of his building friends, first set up a church on a hill, which continues to overlook the town. Inside 10 years, his town had been registered, officially, and the main street, the Henry Martin Trail, was well on its bustling way. His father was installed as Mayor, and the town continued to grow, peacefully, with just one major restriction: absolutely no cars allowed! And though Andy died in 2011, the 104-resident town remains vehicle-free, and, happily, entertains visitors with what their Western world has to offer. While Love Valley was never built to attract

tourists, it has since become a genuine novelty, and several visitors still flock to it, throughout the year, revelling at the wonder! If you have a love for horses and enjoy riding, this really would be up your street, because Love Valley offers miles of trails for riding,

which vary in levels of difficulty. These range from steep mountain hikes, to wide dirt paths. Don’t be fooled, though, because there are many interesting activities, and exciting town events, scheduled throughout the year. But most of Love Valley

caters for those who want to “relax and ride,” enjoying their laid-back holiday. The town’s headquarters lie at the foot of the huge, timbered hills, and there’s actually more than just hiking in this old town. True, it really does resemble the set of an old Western film, complete with a general store, saloon, tack shop and blacksmith. There is even a rodeo arena, which doubles as a square-dance floor on summer Friday nights. And there’s even guide services available in the town, so that you won’t get lost. Love Valley, which stands just 16 miles north of Statesville and 23 miles south-east of Wilkesboro, is a charming little place, and easy to reach. Interested in a holiday with a major difference? Seat belts: must I wear one? By Emma

IN recent weeks, there have been a number of fatalities on the roads, in the North and, also, here in the South of Tenerife. While we are not suggesting that the use of seatbelts, or their lack of use, was to blame, it seems pertinent to refresh the memories of drivers and passengers on this subject. We are all aware that wearing a seatbelt is obligatory. But, sadly, many people still avoid them. A seatbelt is designed to provide the driver, passengers and animals, as well as large objects such as cases and boxes, with safe and comfortable travel in a vehicle… not that boxes have to be comfortable!

The obligatory use of seatbelts was first introduced in Spain in 1975, but many countries have different laws on when they should be worn. There is a clear difference about when it became obligatory to wear a seatbelt. In general, most countries made them a must for front seats in the 1970s. But rear seatbelts became legal, many years later. Children must always be seated, safely and securely; not only wearing a seatbelt correctly, but also dependent on size, age or height in the appropriate car seat or booster seat. Full details can be found on the DGT site, if you have any doubts. Animals may also be carried in the rear of vehicles, when they, too, are secured properly. This means that they must be restrained with an appropriate dog harness. Most are linked into the seatbelt fixture with a strap, which means that the animal is safe and secure, and unable to interfere

with the driver’s line of vision, or cause a distraction by jumping around etc. If you have a large dog and a suitable vehicle, such as a Peugeot Partner, Citroen Berlingo or an estate car, for instance, a dog guard can be purchased and fitted. This enables the dog to travel safely in the “boot”

area of the vehicle. There is, of course, a correct way to wear a seatbelt, and this is extremely important, because, if not worn correctly, it will not provide the appropriate assistance in case of an accident, or sudden stop. You should always wear the seatbelt over your shoulder, and pass it, immediately,

down the upper torso of your body, engaging it firmly and securely. Do not put it under your arm, because this could cause an injury in the event of an accident, and, possibly, not restrain you correctly. If, like many women, especially, you find this position uncomfortable, you can purchase from car-

accessory shops, or online, seatbelt covers that are padded, and fit, normally by Velcro, over the belt. This provides a buffer, and makes it more comfortable to wear. Seatbelts can also be used to secure large loads, or boxes, you might be carrying in the rear of the vehicle, because they don’t fit into your boot. There are, of course, fines and sanctions for not wearing a seatbelt, for not wearing it correctly, and for transporting animals without correct restraints. You should check the seatbelts, periodically, for usage, fraying, fixing etc, to ensure your continued safety when travelling. If you have any doubts that the belt is not working properly, or has severe wear, contact your garage and ask them to check, and, if necessary, supply and fit a new one. A second-hand seatbelt is not recommended because your safety, and that of your passengers, should be a priority.

Anxiety helps us cope with stress! By Val Sainsbury WHEN your heart beats quickly, and your palms get sweaty because you’re about to speak in public, you may feel like your ability to think clearly is affected. However, new research suggests the opposite may be true, and your brain may be getting better at processing new information; at least, when that information is “bad news”. When you feel relaxed, you are prone to embracing positive information over negative information. This phenomenon occurs due to the “optimism bias”, a cogni-

tive bias wherein our brains are far more likely to incorporate positive information in the judgments that they make. Researchers, jointly led by scientists Tali Sharot and Neil Garrett, who are both affiliated to University College London, set out to investigate. The scientists carried out a two-part experiment. In the first, laboratory-based part of the study, 35 participants were divided into two groups. In the first group, the team told the participants that they would have to complete a task, and deliver a presentation on a surprise topic in front of a panel of experts. In the second group, the team told the participants that they would have to complete an easy writing task. To measure the stress levels of the participants, Sharot and colleagues tested the skin conductance and

by asking the participants to reassess the risks, but this time for themselves. The results showed that the “relaxed” participants processed and adjusted to the good news much better than they did to the bad news. On the other hand, stressed participants incorporated the “bad” news into their pre-existing beliefs,

measured the cortisol levels of the participants, who also selfreported how anxious they felt. For the task that both groups completed, participants had to estimate how likely certain adverse life events were. For instance, the scientists asked them to assess how likely it would be to be a victim of burglary or credit-card fraud.

After this assessment, they told the participants what the real statistical likelihood was. The “news” that the team gave them was considered “bad” if the likelihood was higher than their estimate, or “good” if it were lower. Their sight may be impaired, they may only have three legs, because of an amputation, or they may just be frail, because of a really hard start in life. Please consider adopting one of these very special kittens. It is so rewarding, knowing that they are beng loved and cared for in a safe environment. For many of them, it isn't possible to let them out into the big outside world, for obvious reasons, but they make beautiful pets, with so much love to give. Holidaying abroad? It’s Double Dutch to some! BRITISH tourists are ditching the traditional phrasebook when abroad, preferring instead to translate the local language via their phones.

Getting in a round seems to be a priority for holidaymakers, according to a new survey, which shows that 28% of Brits, on their most recent overseas holiday, learned how to order drinks in the local lingo. They also seem to live up to their polite stereotype, with 72% learning how to say “please” and “thank you” on their last holiday, and 69% were able to come and go, saying “hello” and “goodbye”. However, more than 60% of people, aged from 1634, say they’ve used their smartphones and apps, like Google Translate, to help understand the local language, and just 39% rely on a phrasebook. But relying on technology

brings its own perils, and 21% of that same age-group admit that an inaccurate translation on their phone has led to misunderstandings abroad. Among the 2,000 UK adults surveyed for the British Council poll, across all age groups, 73% recognise the importance of learning a

few foreign phrases when heading off on holiday. Yet 65% still depend on locals being able to speak English, and 21% did not learn any foreign phrases at all for their most recent trip abroad: not even basic pleasantries! Some 31% say they can hold a basic conversation in a foreign language, while

14% can speak a foreign language to a high standard. Vicky Gough, Schools Adviser at the British Council, said: “It’s fantastic that so many of us are ready to give foreign languages a go, to make the most of our holidays. And smartphone technology can be a great first step in getting directions,

and finding out basic information. “However, this technology has its limits and can’t replicate the linguistic and cultural nuances of human conversation. In fact, as our survey shows, it can, potentially, lead to a whole new level of confusion, with phrases lost in translation. “Ultimately, nobody wants to be stuck staring at their phone screen all holiday, so taking the time to learn a few phrases can pay dividends, even in the workplace.” She added: “As the UK repositions itself on the world stage, more of us speaking bits of another language will be key to the country’s long-term competitiveness. “With employers crying out for more language skills, we need to give languagelearning the prominence it deserves. And trying out just a few words or phrases on holiday, and encouraging your children to practise their language skills this summer, is the perfect place to start.”

The dieters’ temptation

GINGER Restaurant, based in the heart of Playa de Las Americas, boasts a fantastic terrace with a lovely view of the mountains. We revisited, to check out the new breakfast and lunchtime menus. We were greeted on the terrace by Jules, who showed us to our confortable seats. She went through the new menus with us, and answered any

questions we had about the changes. The breakfast menu looked great, including the regular variety, as well as healthy options such as avocado, tomato and eggs on toast. For the not-soangelic, American pancakes or waffles were available, with a super choice of toppings. All very tempting. The lunch menu has a new look, too, with a wide selection ranging from snacks to full meals, including some irresistible, home-made burgers. Now the decision; should we have breakfast or lunch, as it was about 12 o’clock. We

asked Jules for what she thought was good, only to hear the word “everything”! Eventually, after getting her to commit to an idea, we opted for the lunch menu. We had started a diet the day before, so decided that the recommended Power Salad was a great option. With berries, chickpeas, spinach, sugar-snap peas, sweetcorn and pistachios, the salad was crunchy, fresh and tasty. So far, so good, with the healthy eating. But then our willpower faded as that little devil on my shoulder spotted the Ginger Challenge PBB & J

Peanut butter, bacon and jam. At this point, I forgot about the diet. With a very unconvinced co-diner, I insisted on giving it a go, and boy, I’m glad I did. It was worth it, but the diet was finished! When the burger arrived, we both tucked into this gorgeous, sweet, savoury, nutty mixture that put our taste buds into overdrive. We both agreed that it was a divine invention. Karl and Tracey, the coowners of Ginger, are truly passionate about producing new exciting meals to keep you coming back, time and time again. There are also exciting

ideas for anyone with dietary requirements, with plenty of options of glutenfree or vegetarian dishes, different from your usual menus. The same goes for Ginger’s delicious dessert menu. With the diet blown, we decided to go all the way and opt for an Alabama fudge cake (also a lactosefree option). Well, why not? We shared, of course, to lessen the guilt. There were more than enough options for healthy eating, but we were weakwilled, and the diet starts again on Monday! Needless to say, we will be returning soon.

Warming up the troops CD MARINO, back in training and working hard towards the new Tercera Division, Group 12 season, host Atletico Tacoronte tomorrow (Saturday) at noon in the smaller Anexo Stadium in Las Americas. It’s free entry, and it should be a good test for them because Tacoronte, from the north of Tenerife, won promotion from the Preferente League last season and will be league opponents for Marino this term. The Blues’ pre-season challenges began last Saturday with a 1-1 draw at Atletico Victoria, and, on Wednesday night, there was a short journey to Valle San Lorenzo. The home island tour

continues next Friday (17th August) in the Candelaria Trophy, against La Orotava, at 6pm. Home fans get their chance to see Marino in action again in Las Americas, against Las Palmas B, at noon next Sunday (19th August). The league fixtures are now released, and Marino start with a trip to Gran Canaria to play San Mateo, on the weekend of 24-26th August. The home debut arrives a

week after, on Sunday 2nd September, against UD Guimar, and is expected to be a noon kick-off. Both fixtures will be confirmed a few days ahead of playing. Coach Zeben Hernandez has high expectations for his squad, with some key, former players returning to mix with a good crop of youngsters. Meanwhile, Marino romped to a 4-1 win at neighbours Valle San Lorenzo on Wednesday evening.

Loch-in’s Devilish luck! THE Loch-In ‘A’ were treated to a taste of Belgian hospitality, when their visit to The Red Devils saw them to a 7-1 victory. But the result did not reflect the way some games went down to the wire, and, with more clinical finishing, there would have been a more respectable scoreline. In Division 2, The LochIn Bullseyes stormed to a brilliant 6-2 win

against Clouseau’s, keeping up their chase for silverware. Sundowners were back to winning ways as they claimed the trebles and a 5-3 result, when hosted by Marilyns ‘B’. Both Nauta teams were beaten in closely-fought games as Pas O Nadas ‘B’ took the trebles and victory over the Nomads, while newcomers Palms Sports Bar enjoyed a 5-3 win at Naughty Nautas. It’s close at the top of the league, with just six points separating the top four teams, led by Emerald Lounge ‘B’. Tonight (Friday) sees the Jet Excursions’ singles competitions taking place, so good luck to all entrants.

Riders topple the no-blow Medano MOTHER Nature was in a mischievous mood as the PWA World Windsurfing Tour pitched up in El Medano, which is normally noted for its high winds and big waves. The 70 riders from around the globe had to pick their moments after the first day’s competition was put on hold, because of the becalmed El Cabezo beach. But their spirit, skills and determination saw them squeeze the best out of improving conditions to put them on course for a big finish tomorrow (Saturday). The first action of the week was the Junior competition, with categories for under13s, 15s, 17s and 20s. And it proved that the sport has a strong future, particularly in Tenerife. Just a glance around the other El Medano beaches on any day will show how much all aspects of surfing are enjoyed in the Canary Islands. As riders waded into the sea to test their boards

and sails, ahead of the resumption of the senior event, Barcelona rider Aleix Sanllehy explained what they were looking for at each venue on the tour. “It’s about 50-50 between the jumps we can make, and the style of the other moves,” he said. “El Medano differs from some of the other places where we compete. There tend to be more shallow waves here, and, particularly, with the cross-winds, it’s hard to read the waves.” Aleix started on the tour in 2003 and had a good season

last year. “I finished 12th, but messed up a bit at Gran Canaria,” he admitted. “I did similar there again this time around, but we move on to finish in Germany next, and I’m confident of breaking

through into the top 10.” When the conditions improved, riders went out in groups of four, each with a 14-minute slot to impress the judges. Their best jump would make the biggest difference to the scores they would receive. With the delays, you’d think they would all be on edge, but they are a chilled-out bunch. It was noticeable that, despite the strong, competitive spirit, the camaraderie in the pit area was clear to see, with many passing on advice once they had tasted the conditions.

The presentation marquee was buzzing, and the party spirit reigned at night. It’s one of the reasons why El Medano welcomes the PWA World Tour so enthusiastically. The knockout process should come to a head tomorrow (Saturday), and, if they get a spurt on and finish early, there will be exhibition events after the main competition. The top 16 nations from across the globe will

descend on Tenerife to start out in four groups of four, prior to the knock-out stages. It’s a big event on the world calendar, and a lot of work has been done to prepare the stage. The main venue, the Pabellon Quico Cabrera, next to CD Tenerife football ground, needed a 1.1m-euro facelift, but it will be completed, in time for the action.

Back-up plan’s a winner TOP marks to Iberostar Tenerife for completing their roster with the signing of German shootingguard Lucca Staiger. It happened just days after Slovenian target Jaka Blazic was snatched from under their noses. Coach Txus Vidorreta thought he had Blazic in his keep net, because the 28-year-old seemed certain to switch from Andorra, in Tenerife’s league. But Barcelona nipped in with a last-minute offer to capture him. But Txus showed the value of keeping an eye on the European market, nailing 30-year-old Staiger, from Brose Bamburg, in the German Bundesliga. He’s the sixth new summer arrival, and is from Bavaria. But he went to Iowa State college in the US, after excelling in the German youth leagues. Training will move on a pace now for the La Laguna team. The fixtures have given them a 30th

Last Saturday saw the 4th edition of the Cyder Cup, sponsored by Blacktower Financial Management, and a good day was certainly had by all.

Many of the same players returned to see if Oasis Fm could be crowned winners again, but, alas, Blacktower pipped them to the post this year, taking their first win to make the scoreboard 3 -1. Amarilla Golf course was awash with black and white t-shirts, with people being meeted and greeted all the way through the day at the sponsored holes.
