Why is it Tax Efficient to hold a Spanish Tax Compliant Bond?

S

etting up a Spanish tax compliant investment is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs. If you are thinking of investing but concerned about the tax implications of a bond, read on to see how it works. Tax may be payable if you were tax resident in Spain when you invested in your bond and you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The applicable tax rate will depend on your residency status and your individual circumstances at the time you make a partial/full surrender or regular withdrawal payment. The Individual Income Tax (IIT) regime applies to all individuals who are currently tax resident in Spain and do not benefit from the Special Tax regime. A withholding tax of 19% over the gain from your bond will be operated. This will be paid to their Spanish fiscal representative who will in turn submit the proceeds directly to the Spanish tax authorities on your behalf. So, how does it work? Look at the generic example below:

Example of a Partial Surrender – no previous chargeable events Premium (initial value assumed used)

€100,000

Surrender Value

€130,000

Partial surrender amount Policyholder resident/Spanish resident before chargeable events (Initial premium/surrender value) x partial surrender amount (€100,000/€130,000) x €5,000 (€5,000 - €3,846.15) Tax at 19% on taxable income (€1,153.85 x 19%) Amount paid to policyholder Surrender value – partial surrender amount (€130,000 - €5,000)

€5,000 Yes Portion corresponding to premium and non taxable €3,846.15 Taxable income (€1,153.85) Tax due €219.23 (€5,000 - €219.23) = €4,780.77 Closing surrender value of Bond €125,000

The above example is for illustration purposes only, your personal circumstances will determine how the bond is taxed. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.

The vandals were lucky! Cont. from Front The three people, two Belgian and one Dutch, who were wearing diving gear, jumped into the pool. But, it was stressed, they weren’t in the slightest concerned about the terrible consequences that could have resulted, for the animals, their trainers and even for themselves. They were members of the Vegan Strike Group, an international organisation which claims to oppose animal enslavement. Photographs showed the activists swimming into the pool, waving posters around and calling for the zoo’s closure. The two men and a woman said they held the demo “because of the exploitation of dolphins, orcas and sea lions, for entertainment purposes”. It was surely no coincidence that tour operator Thomas Cook, just a month earlier, announced its intention to stop selling tickets for attractions that show orcas in captivity, such as at the Tenerife zoo. And the Vegan Strike Group said that Loro Parque had been on its wish-list for a long time, claiming that these types of shows “were cruel and constituted animal abuse”. It alleged: “For the fourth time, our Vegan Strike activists have disrupted a dolphin show on Spanish soil. “This was the 14th time we have taken action for the dolphins and the sea lions, since the formation of the Vegan Strike Group. “We took this action for both the dolphins and orcas, as they are being exploited in this horrible park. The park has been receiving negative media attention for years. “But people are becoming more and more aware of the

cruelty behind this form of negative entertainment.” Yet all is not love and peace in the Vegan Strike world, because negative comments appeared, rapidly, on its social network after the ambush, claiming the group “obviously lacked commonsense”. One commenter said that the demonstration was “stupid and disgusting”, while one said that everyone was entitled to his, or her, views about what constituted animal cruelty. “But this was not the right way to go about it.” Another wrote: “This group makes no effort to distinguish itself from other organisations, in its invasion of what is home to a number of marine mammals at a highlyrespected zoo, putting them at considerable risk. “Once again, we are shown, without shadow of doubt, that animal welfare is of secondary importance to those people.” Loro Parque, which would surely welcome these views, said in a statement: “These Vegan Strike people are perfectly aware that you cannot predict the behaviour of dolphins, and yet they jumped in. “Fortunately, thanks to the strong bond of friendship and trust between the animals and their trainers, it was possible to avoid them succumbing to fear, and a much-worse outcome was avoided. “This type of vandalism is happening all the time; examples could be the release of minks or squirrels from farms, which are becoming a serious ecological problem for the affected regions. “It is also worth recalling a case that occurred in Florida, in which two dolphins were released into the sea by activist Ric O’Barry, without being

prepared for the process. “One of them died almost immediately, and the other lived the rest of its life with serious lacerations. The man, who faced a court trial, was convicted, and made to pay the maximum fine of $50,000 for such a serious incident. “Loro Parque suggests that Sunday’s authors should be more concerned about, and deal with, the terrible damage done to more than 100 million sharks, which are being killed for their fins each year.” The statement continues: “Loro Parque has always given great importance to the scientific work carried

out with their animals. And the presentations, so valued by visitors to the Parque, have an eminentlyeducational character. “In its commitment to the environment, Loro Parque has invested more than 18 million dollars in environmental projects, through their Loro Parque Foundation, saving, among other important achievements, nine species of parrots from imminent extinction, and improving the populations of many other animals. “Those who claim to be proanimal activists, yet allow such acts of vandalism to take place for the sole

purpose of attracting media attention, would do well to ask what they have done for nature, and what real or economic contribution they have made to the protection and conservation of wildlife.” Finally, it adds: “Loro Parque would like to thank the people present at the presentation for expressing their indignation and rejection of this action, and their harsh criticism of these individuals, as well as their gratitude to all true lovers of nature, who have supported the Parque on social networks since the news was made public.”

Police knew thieves, who were at it again

Man flattened by giant festival ball A MAN taking part in the “Running of the Balls” festival was crushed by a giant, 250kg globe on Sunday.

Despite it being a safer, much-tamer alternative to Pamplona’s Running of the Bulls festival, the 29-year-old competitor was rushed to hospital with a severe head injury. He is believed to have been crushed against the door of a bull-ring by a ball, and was taken by helicopter to a hospital at midday. The “Boloencierro” fun festival has taken place for the last seven years in the Madrid region of Mataelpino, in a bid to offer a morehumane version of the San

Fermin festival. Mataelpino was the first place in Spain to hold the festival, but similar events have since caught on in various towns across the country. Much like San Fermin, locals race down the cobbled streets while being chased… by huge polystyrene balls, rolling at great speed, rather than by a herd of bulls! Mataelpino Mayor Javier Perez de los Nietos told El Pais: “People who are used to bulls know they can’t just stand still in front of them because they could be gored. “With the ball, however, some people think that nothing will happen to them. But this is not the case, as has been proved. If they get a direct hit, it can be serious.” It is not yet clear whether the man’s condition is critical.

Driver caught, rolling along

THE National Police have detained two men, known to them as criminals, and have charged them with breaking and entering, as well as robbery.

The men entered a home in the Lanzarote capital of Arrecife on 20th August, where a couple were asleep in another room. They helped themselves to a television, jewellery, money, a phone and the couple’s documentation, as well as the car keys, for their vehicle parked outside the

house, which they also stole. The home-owner alerted the police immediately, after discovering what had happened. The police chief said the woman awoke in the middle of the night and noticed that the front door was open. She went to investigate, and discovered various items missing from the front room. That same night, the police received a call from a witness, who told them he had seen a man acting suspiciously, as though he were shifting items from a vehicle to an Arrecife building. Police passed by the area,

where they detained and questioned the individual, as well as claiming the stolen TV. A few hours later, the police found the other robber, who was also questioned, and a search revealed that he was carrying several watches. One of them had been taken from the house, which had been burgled the same night, and the suspect was also arrested and charged. After questioning both men, the car was also found, as well as all the other items stolen, and they were all returned to their rightful owners. Both men are awaiting a date to appear in court.

Monster killed father, and tried to run over daughter LOCAL Police, from the specialised night-shift unit in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas, stopped a driver who was acting suspiciously on Sunday night.

They saw the man driving his car in a pedestrian area near Calle Luis Morote, and, on closer inspection, they saw him rolling a joint as he drove along. They also discovered relative paraphernalia in the car. The driver was arrested, and, while detained, officers carried out alcohol and drug tests, which both proved positive. The police confiscated the vehicle, and left the driver to ponder his pending charges.

THE National Police have arrested a 57-year-old man in Santa Cruz, known by police to be a serial criminal, with a record of 45 arrests. He was detained after causing serious injuries to an individual, who later died because of the severity of his wounds. The fatal assault happened on 5th August, at around 2pm, on Avenida Perez Armas, in the Tenerife capital.

Witnesses said they saw a man in his parked-up car, shouting obscenities and making indecent gestures to a woman, who was sitting at a bar terrace. Another man, now deceased, approached the vehicle and confronted the driver, who jumped out of his car and began a struggle. Then, suddenly, one of the men, not the driver, fell to the ground, suffering serious injuries. He was taken to hospital immediately, where, tragically, he died a few days later. The attacker was spotted

by one of victim’s daughters a few days later, and she tried to contact the police. But her father’s assailant noticed her and attempted to run her over. Fortunately, she dodged the car and suffered only slight injuries. The woman reported the incident officially, and police, who checked the surveillance camera in the area, were able to track down the killer. Once detained, he was presented before a judge, who ordered him to prison, awaiting a trial.

Couple are victims of mystery knife attack

El Hierro’s hit by mini-quake THE National Geographic Institute (ING) registered a mini-quake on El Hierro, in the Frontera municipality. The small tremor occurred at 2.04am on Wednesday, and registered 2.5 on the Richter scale, at a depth of 15km. It added to the several minitremors registered by ING

around the island over the past month. Happily, all the registered tremors were not felt by the residents because of their small magnitude. No fewer than 11 tremors were registered over the last month, and the Institute has registered a total of 19 across the island. The highest registered was on 5th August at 8.36am, with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale.

Vet injured by ‘nervous’ dog

A VETERINARY surgeon was attacked on Monday afternoon by a Dalmatian, while she was attending to the dog at the Las Canteras clinic where she works, in La Laguna. The dog-owners had taken their pet for a check-up, when it the attacked the vet suddenly, biting her nose and arm. La Laguna’s Local Police, who were informed, attended the surgery almost immediately for a statement. This animal is not categorised as a

dangerous dog. But, said a source, he obviously became nervous and was defending himself. The vet was taken by ambulance to Candelaria Hospital, and the officers on the case are treating the incident as a work-related accident. The vet has been given an official medical report. which will be presented before a judge in the La Laguna courts. In this case, the dog was returned to its owners, which is not common practice for such incidences. As a rule, aggressive dogs are taken to kennels in Valle Colino until the judge decides what to do with the animal.

his companion, a woman aged 40, were assaulted at around 4.30am in Calle Managua, a popular area for tourists, just outside the shopping centre. The violence left the man with injuries to his abdomen, while the woman’s arms and legs were injured. An ambulance was

dispatched immediately to the shopping centre, once the emergency services were informed. The crew soon assessed the situation and stabilised the couple, before taking them to nearby Hospiten Sur for further treatment, National Police, who were also at the scene, are investigating the incident.

NEWS IN BRIEF Woman shocked by attacker

Consumer group lands hefty blow on Ryanair boss

A TEENAGER, arrested by the National Police, has been charged with a violent robbery after being reported by his victim. The 16-year-old is accused of attacking a woman last weekend, on the beach path in Playa de Melenara, Gran Canaria. He was said to have dragged the startled woman to the ground by her hair, then snatched two bags and stolen the contents, comprising money and her documentation, as well as other personal belongings. The youngster then fled the scene, but she called the police immediately, despite being in shock from the robbery, and because her attacker was so young. She also suffered superficial wounds from being forced to the ground. But, thanks to an in-depth description by the victim, as well as other witnesses, the police found the youth in a nearby street. He was detained and is awaiting a date for an appearance before a juvenile judge.

Motorbike crash injures two

TWO people suffered serious injuries after a car crashed into their motorbike on Sunday evening in Guargacho, on the road connecting Las Chafiras to Las Galletas. Emergency-ambulance medics attended to a 29-yearold man, who had severe abdominal injuries. He was stabilised quickly and rushed to Candelaria Hospital for treatment. His companion, a 35-year-old woman, whose arms were injured badly, was transported to Hospiten Sur.

Cash bonus for jobless

THE Canarian Government’s Ministry of Employment, Social Policies and Housing is to provide monthly financial aid of up to 170 euros for those unemployed, with children under three years old. The money is intended to pay for nursery-school provision, while a child’s parents are looking for work. And this additional subsidy can be requested by both parents, if they are actively seeking employment and registered as job-seekers. Cristina Valido, for the Ministry, said: “The purpose of this initiative is that the care of children of the family is not an obstacle, so that either of the parents can access a job.”

CONSUMER giant FACUA has stepped into controversial Ryanair’s latest announcement, that there will be a charge for hand-luggage from November. Those who pay “priority boarding” can take their larger hand-luggage bag on board, along with a second one measuring a maximum of 35 x 20 x 20 centimetres, while those who opt not to pay the priority fee must put their larger bag in the hold at the gate, free of charge. The low-cost Irishbased airline has recently announced it will apply an eight-euro charge for these “gate bags”. Now, though, FACUA has urged Spain’s Ministry of Public Works and Infrastructure to intervene.

The organisation says: “It looks like an attempt to recover costs incurred in compensation payments to passengers, arising through the recent strikes.” Pilots in Ireland and Germany, as well as cabin crew in Spain, Italy, Belgium and Portugal, have staged various strikes this summer, leading to thousands of passengers having to be booked on to new flights, or refunded, plus being paid the 250-euro mandatory compensation for delays of more than three hours, or cancellations. Ryanair claims the handluggage charge is to “reduce delays” in boarding, despite hold bags being tagged while passengers are standing in a queue for passport control, and are merely passed to luggage handlers on the runway. Generally, the large handluggage bags are loaded before all passengers have

settled in their seats. FACUA does not accept this “excuse”, and says it is clear the company “wants to apply charges to customers, rather than taking on more staff to make the boarding process swifter”. The organisation has also criticised Ryanair for charging those passengers who had already booked their flights for November onwards, before the rule was announced. The group has also called for a reform to airline-industry regulations to stop the evergrowing trend of charging passengers for extras that “should be included in the price of the ticket”, which affects Ryanair as well as many other carriers. “Airlines are devaluing their level of services for trips purchased, to sell add-ons as basic and necessary as being able to sit next to your travelling companion.

Did radioactive object fall off tragedy plane? THE radioactive object, discovered on a farm in La Laguna this week, suggests that could have come from one of the planes involved in the fatal, 1977 runway crash at the North Airport. Initial tests carried out confirmed that it was still emitting minimum levels of

radiation, and a nearby house was evacuated as a precaution. A local resident, who called the 112 emergency number to report his find, said it measured about 20cm by 10cm, and suggested it could be a piece of an aeroplane. A Nuclear Safety

Council technician, who also measured the item and studied the farm’s area, said that it seemed quite heavy, despite its dimensions. S p e c i a l i s e d personnel, from the National Radioactive Waste Company, will now take charge of its disposal.

Pool youngster tragedy GUARDIA Civil sources have confirmed that the seven-yearold, rescued from the swimming pool where he lived, in a Fu e r t e v e n t u r a tourist resort, died on Sunday afternoon. He was pulled out of the pool, unconscious, the previous evening

at 7pm. The person who rescued the youngster performed CPR on him in an attempt to save his life, until the ambulance crew arrived and took over. The medics were able to stabilise the boy, before taking him to hospital, where he was admitted in an extremelycritical condition. The youngster was originally taken to The General Hospital in

Fuerteventura, before being transferred by a hospital helicopter to the paediatric department in Gran Canaria’s University Hospital. He was taken to the intensive care unit immediately, but, tragically, he passed away, The boy was a Chinese national who lived on the complex and was playing alone at the pool, which is why a judge has opened an investigation.

The Guardia Civil have charged a person with an alleged crime, related to the protection of wildlife, without the required documentation that proves their origin and legal possession. The Guardia’s nature protection service (SEPRONA) found the collection in the garage

of the person’s house. There was also a collection of corals and shells. The collector claimed that the purchases were made in markets and small businesses during their holidays, in some towns on the Andalucian coast, as well as through Internet pages and advertisements. Holiday-maker screamed on aeroplane: ‘We are all going to die’

Boozed-up woman caused mother to have a seizure

A DRUNKEN aeroplane passenger, flying from Tenerife back to the UK, caused a fellow holiday-maker to have a seizure after screaming: “We are all going to die.” Kiran Jagdev had downed up to eight beers and six wines before the outburst, as the Jet2 flight circled over East Midlands Airport. It happened after Jagdev kept kicking the seat in which the woman’s 15-yearold autistic daughter was sitting. The 41-year-old former personal assistant, from Leicester, who had gone on holiday alone, even flirted with an off-duty police officer, who stepped in to

monitor her behaviour. Her problems with drinking began when she lost her unborn child and split from her husband in 2015. Prosecutor Zoe Lee said Jagdev started shouting when the plane was unable to land the first time round and had to circle. “The defendant screamed, ‘We are all going to die’,” she told the court. “The defendant’s unruly behaviour directly brought about the stress, which caused the mother of this girl to have a seizure on the flight. “The family asked to be moved and were accommodated. Jagdev was repeatedly spoken to by fellow passengers and cabin crew, but did not calm down.” Mrs Lee said that Jagdev had polished off between

six and eight beers before she boarded the plane, then drank four to six glasses of wine on the fight. “The cabin crew could see she was intoxicated and refused to serve her any more alcohol,” she added. “She was then seen to be drinking alcohol she had brought on to the plane herself.” At one point, an off-duty police officer on the plane offered to sit next to her for the rest of the flight, to try to placate her. Mrs Lee said: “To start with, it sort of worked. Then she became flirtatious and he refused her advances. Then she became abusive and much louder.” When the plane landed at East Midlands Airport, police boarded the flight and arrested Jagdev. She told officers that she

had been in party mode, and blamed the cabin crew for serving her alcohol. Jagdev pleaded guilty to being drunk on an aircraft on 28th January. The prosecutor told the court how Jagdev had been convicted in a Spanish court of a violent offence, and had received a suspended sentence while on holiday. The conviction came just five days before her flight to East Midlands Airport. Mrs Lee said that Jagdev had previous convictions for alcohol-related offences and threatening behaviour. Ahmed Khan, defending, said his client had an alcohol problem. He added that she had turned to alcohol when she lost an unborn child and split from her husband in 2015. “She initially turned to drink then stopped,”

he said. “After stopping drinking she was able to save some money. “She used this money to make improvements to her property and to treat herself to a holiday. “She went on holiday and fell off the wagon. She is ashamed of what happened. She would like to apologise to everyone who was on that flight. “My client clearly has an alcohol problem and needs help to tackle her issues.” District Judge Sally Fudge said: “I view this extremely seriously. By law, I can only impose a financial penalty in this court for this offence. I feel that my sentencing powers are not sufficient to deal with this case.” Jagdev, given unconditional bail, is set to be sentenced at Leicester Crown Court this month.

Such a big demand for builders and plumbers

Keen-eyed walker saw a broken drone at sea QUALIFIED tradesmen and women, such as electricians, carpenters, builders and plumbers, are the people most difficult to find, to fill job vacancies in Spanish companies. According to the ManPowerGroup’s latest report, “How to combat the lack of talent (create, attract, share, transform)”, 24% of Spain’s company directors have difficulties filling these vacancies. The report’s authors say that their data reflects the growing lack of talent

in these areas on a global level (45%), and shows that the job of finding the ideal candidate is becoming more and more difficult. They say it’s because of changes in the employment market, and the creation of new jobs, which require specific skills and aptitudes. From 42,000 responses from company directors all over the world, ManpowerGroup highlights that the majority of most-in-demand jobprofiles require certificates of higher vocational or technical training, and not university degrees. Companies are looking for candidates with a good

work ethic and a desire for continuous learning and development. The 1,000 Spanish companies interviewed all confirmed that vacancies in the traditional manual trades are the most difficult to fill, citing electricians, builders, plumbers and carpenters in particular. Professionals like project managers, lawyers or researchers were the next most difficult vacancies to fill, followed by professional drivers (lorry drivers, delivery drivers, bus and train drivers), and then IT specialists (experts in cybersecurity or technical support).

A SHARP-EYED passer-by, who spotted what seemed to be the remains of a small plane’s fuselage, floating in the sea at El Ricon, Las Palmas, called the emergency services. As a result, the Guardia Civil, Local Police and Red Cross, as well as the Coastguard, were all sent to the area on Wednesday morning. Upon arrival, an emergency device was activated, and, after analysing the floating lump, it was confirmed that the pieces were from an unmanned aircraft.

But, because of the dimensions, experts believed that the aircraft size and structure was that of an unauthorised surveillance drone. The remains were recovered from the water, and, because of the deteriorated appearance, the experts felt they could have been in the water for some time. They were taken to a Port de la Luz depot, where a specialised unit from the Judicial Police, as well as the Guardia Civil, have been primed to investigate. The actual device was found, still with one of its engines and two propellers, as well as one wing, attached to a central structure.

UK taxman hunts Spanish dodgers THE British government has informed taxpayers, including those living in Spain or Tenerife, that they must declare their earnings on overseas assets by 30th September, or face fines. The UK’s tax-collecting authority, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), say the call is aimed at those who have not informed officials of assets and earnings outside the country. It relates to earnings which come under income, capital gains or inheritance levies. The deadline follows the passing of new British tax rules, designed to target those who stash undeclared earnings and foreign assets, according to Treasury sources. It comes as Britain is set to join the Common Reporting Standard (CRS) system this October, which allows a total of 100 countries, including Spain, to share financial accounts data. Mel Stride, the British

Squashed tomatoes, not for breakfast...

Government’s Financial Secretary to the Treasury, said he urged anyone who had not already contacted HMRC to declare overseas assets to do so. “We will continue to crack down relentlessly on those not playing by the rules,” said Stride. “This new measure will place higher penalties on those who do not contact HMRC and ensure their offshore tax liabilities are correct.” The Treasury said in a statement that earnings from renting out holiday homes and other overseas properties were liable to be taxed. But if a taxpayer notified HMRC by 30th September, they would then have 90

days to fully-disclose their earnings, and pay any tax owed. “If taxpayers are confident that their affairs are in order they do not need to worry,” advised the Government department. “If anyone is unsure, HMRC recommends they seek advice from a professional tax advisor.” The Treasury added those wishing to declare could use its digital-disclosure service, telling an HMRC official, or by any other method agreed with tax collectors. Stride said the Government had recovered the equivalent of more than three billion euros in undeclared earnings since 2010.

SPAIN’S La Tomatina Festival, described as the “World’s Biggest Food Fight”, took place on Wednesday morning in Buñol, 38km from Valencia.

Some 22,000 paying revellers turned up for the pleasure of hurling squashed tomatoes at each other for an hour. At around 11am in the town’s main square, Plaza del Pueblo, trucks delivered some 180,000 tomatoes, weighing around 160 tonnes, and all ripe for pelting. The event, part of the week-long village festivities, has been declared a Festival of International Tourist Interest. It began in 1945, when fighting youths in the village square threw tomatoes at each other from a nearby vegetable stall, before police broke up the battle. They repeated it for several years, bringing their own tomatoes, and, eventually, following a ban, the tradition was established, with rules! The Valencian village town hall took over the organisation in 1980, with tomatoes being squashed beforehand to avoid injuries. Once the start of the mid-morning fight is given, tomato-laden lorries enter the village centre, and, exactly one hour later, the fighting ends. Fire engines hose down the streets, and revellers use hoses provided by locals to remove the tomato remnants from their bodies.

Runaway migrants stun beach bathers

SUNBATHERS stood and watched on in amazement as migrants, crammed into an inflatable boat, fled after landing on a beach in southern Spain in broad daylight. The amazing scene unfolded on the Barrosa beach, on the Costa de la Luz on Sunday, in front of stunned holiday-makers. A video circulated on social media shows around 50 migrants arriving near the Sancti Petri luxury tourist

resort. The migrants scattered rapidly and began to climb up the rocks, heading inland. Police called to the scene detained 25 migrants, 19 minors and six adults, who are in holding centres before being returned to their country of origin. The authorities are continuing to hunt for the boat’s remaining people. Spain is now considered to be the preferred destination for migrant arrivals in Europe, following a ban imposed by Italy’s new Interior Minister, on their boats entering the country’s ports.

Spain so grateful to its tourism industry IT’S not just Tenerife which relies a great deal on tourism, its leading industry, because mainland Spain also has its workers at No.1 in the rankings, according to the latest figures. These show that more than 2.65 million people were employed in the sector this spring. This represents 13.7% of Spain’s 19.34m working population, which leaves tourism ahead of the construction industry as the country’s top employer. In fact, a whopping 75.5% of Spain’s working population are employed in a service-related job. But, despite the booming tourism sector, wages have remained stagnant. Hospitality employees were paid

an average of 9.32 euros an hour in the first quarter of 2018, while construction workers received and hourly wage of 11.73 euros. Catalunya welcomed Spain’s highest number of tourists, with 19 million foreigners and five million Spaniards visiting the region last year, according to the INE (Spanish Statistical Office). The region also employs the greatest number of tourism workers, with 457,944 people working in the sector, in the second quarter of this year. Sun-kissed Andalucía is placed second, with 433,853 workers, which is a 7.5% increase on last year’s figures from that period. And, despite Madrid receiving fewer visitors than the Balearic and Canary Islands, it has more people working in tourism: 400,000 compared with 169,000 and 244,000, respectively.

‘Doctors use emergency ambulances as taxicabs’ AUTHORITIES in charge of emergency ambulances in Valencia are at loggerheads with health-centre doctors, because of their “inappropriate call-outs”. Translated, that means they are using the ambulances as taxicabs. And, in a letter sent to all health centres in the region, the Emergency Health Service (SES) complained that since a new transport contract was introduced at the start of August, doctors have been doing just that. But health workers now have no means of getting to outpatients, who may call them for urgent care, since day-ambulances were withdrawn. Doctors and nurses have

TOUR guide app authorities have called in lawyers after a woman was threatened with a 600,000-euro fine for offering guided tours around her Spanish village. Yet the most Susana Meseguer, 50, has made from using the app GuruWalk, and by posting small ads for tours in local shops, is just 60 euros in one month. Meseguer, who lives in Vilafames, Valencia, signed up to GuruWalk, which connects tourists to tour guides, when she lost her regular job in May. Now, though, the Valencia government has written to her, demanding she halts her tour-guide

to make their own way to patients’ homes, either in their own cars, on foot or by taxi. But the SES and coordination centres (CICU) are accusing the local health staff of “transferring” their problems on to them. SES and CICU say they are there, specifically, for emergencies, and not to take health workers on home visits. Doctors criticised the letter’s tone, saying it made them sound as though they just wanted to get to call-outs easily. They pointed out that they often received urgent calls from outpatients, which they had to assess, quickly, whether they were emergency cases. And, it was easier to call an ambulance immediately if the case sounded serious.

activities because she lacks authorisation. And she has been told that she could face a fine of between 100,000-600,000 euros, should she continue. “We are currently talking

with our lawyers to solve this issue,” a GuruWalk spokesman told the Olive Press. “But the amount of the fine looks disproportionate to us.” And other tour-guide

groups argue that GuruWalk, a Valenciabased site, is degrading the profession. Meseguer, 50, told El Pais that she had “found her place in the world in Vilafamés.” But she has succumbed to the pressure and left the GuruWalk platform, removing her adverts from around the town. She added: “I was not doing tours from 9am to 9pm every day, as they said. They were sporadic: some weekends, as a hobby, because I love my village. “I liked the walks where I would explain information

and tell stories, and I would always warn that I was not an official guide. “The most I ever made was around 60 euros in one month. If they had called me, I would have cleared up everything. But they never did.” She also claims that the town hall knew what she was doing, and that the tourist office had even sent her tourist groups when staff couldn’t leave their posts. It comes as other platforms such as Uber and Airbnb have been meeting much resistance from authorities across Spain.

GENERAL Franco’s remains will be exhumed from Madrid’s Valle de los Caídos (“Valley of the Fallen”) before the end of the year, following a bitter, long-running campaign. The Spanish Government has approved a Bill of Law, or Royal Decree, allowing the process to begin. The campaign has been calling for the removal of Franco from a site, dedicated to martyrs, heroes, and victims of war and oppression. The dictator is not considered to be a “hero”, deserving to be honoured with a burial place in the Valle de los Caídos, which is in San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Government spokeswoman Carmen Calvo said: “Democracy is not compatible with a tomb which honours the memory of a fascist dictator.” The law reform, which makes the exhumation “urgent”, was validated in Parliament last Friday. Left-wing parties across Spain voted in favour of the law reform, whilst centreright Ciudadanos abstained

Dictator Franco to be shipped out of the ‘heroes’ valley

and the right-wing PP voted against, as well as announcing possible legal action against the decision to move Franco on. Unless Franco’s relatives, (his son and grandchildren,

following the recent death of his daughter Carmen), specify a burial site approved by the government, the State will decide where he should be interred.

This will be “somewhere dignified”, as befitting a treasured relative, but not somewhere he would be “honoured”, given the mass torture, death and deprivation of human rights Spain suffered during the 36 years of his dictatorship, from the end of the Civil War in 1939, to the year before his 1976 death. Carmen Calvo said the law reform required the exhumation to take place between 30 days and 12 months from now. But she added that if everything went according

17 CW

to plan, it would be before the end of this year. “We’re not going to hang about,” she added. “The Law of Historic Memory came into force in 2007, and the previous, PPled Government failed to develop or apply this law at all. “It meant that Spain had to wait for the return of a socialist government to resume our commitment to this legislation, and adapt it to the events of the last few years. “The United Nations has been warning us for years that it is inappropriate to have a dictator’s grave in a war memorial ground. We have an agreement from last May in Parliament, and nobody voted against it, to follow through with the UN’s recommendations. “There is no reason for a democratic State to be uncomfortable with exhuming Franco’s remains. “The Valle de los Caídos should only house the bodies of those who lost their lives in the Civil War, because that’s what it’s for.” Since the debate about exhuming Franco became in earnest, and the probability of its happening looked certain, tourists visiting the Valle de los Caídos are said to have multiplied.

Expats swindled out of 6m euros A GROUP of British expats have contacted the police after losing more than six million euros to an alleged Costa del Sol fraudster. The unsuspecting Brits each invested up to 1.64m euros into the so-called Ponzi scheme, operating out of Marbella, Dubai and India. Welsh expat Rhys Williams, 36, is accused of snaring wealthy parents at his children’s 10,000-euroa-year private school in Marbella. The victims insist the businessman, who was declared bankrupt in the UK, persuaded them to invest huge sums into a paper-recycling and printing business, as well as trading platforms in Dubai, “guaranteeing them a 2% monthly return”. One British pensioner, Brian Livesey, 84, invested 1.64m euros in late 2014. The former soldier, who has lived in Marbella for decades, has yet to see any return. His son, Paul, said: “It has destroyed him. He had a

stroke earlier this year from the stress of it, and we are barely keeping our heads above water, paying off debts.” Mr Livesey, who once ran a successful UK construction company, was introduced to Williams by a director at one of Gibraltar’s cryptocurrency companies. “They snared him in with trips to Wimbledon for the tennis, to Sweden, and to fancy meals out, which was nothing compared with

what they got from him,” said Paul. “They need to be stopped.” Another victim, Adrian Parsons, 53, from Birmingham, invested 500,000 euros into the Dubai-based recycling company. He told the Olive Press: “He was very convincing. He and his partner were living in a 10,000-euro-a-month villa in Marbella, and were dressed, head to toe, in designer clothes and Rolexes. Mr Parsons even flew out to

Dubai, where he was shown around various facilities which, apparently, backed up the claims. “He reinforced all this with detailed bank statements and lots of official paperwork, which we now think was fake,” he added. Initially, the investment seemed to be genuine, and, for the first six months, he was paid back the promised monthly 2%. “But then the money suddenly stopped coming in,” he said. “I’m sure this was some sort of Ponzi scheme. Clearly, they ran out of more investors.” For two more years, Williams kept promising the money would be returned, and Mr Parsons has since

asked for his 500,000-euro investment back to care for his father, who has terminal cancer. “Williams vowed I would get my money back, telling me how his mother had also had cancer, and that he wouldn’t let us down,” he added. “But it never materialised.” Another victim, Michael McVicar, claims to have lost 1.5m euros, while up to a dozen other expats have, apparently, each lost between 100,000 euros and a million. The Olive Press discovered that Williams left Llys Meddyg Llangristiolus, in North Wales, almost a decade ago, after being declared bankrupt, and having his care-home company investigated for fraud. He is believed to have returned to Wales with his family, “leaving a trail of destruction behind him and many lives in tatters,” said one investor. North Yorkshire’s police fraud squad confirmed that they are investigating Williams, and, following various denuncias, Estepona Guardia Civil are doing likewise.

GBP/EUR slides to 2018 worst levels, as Brexit jitters pile on! By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

THE pound’s August tumble versus the euro could be set to continue, as fresh comments from high-ranking officials, both in the UK and EU, keep alive fears of a possible “no-deal” Brexit. Over the past fortnight, GBP/EUR has seen significant losses, tumbling from 1.12 euros to 1.10. EUR/GBP, on the other hand, has climbed to above the key level of £0.90. US dollar weakness has seen GBP/USD rise from 1.27 to 1.28, and EUR/USD from 1.14 to 1.16. Investors have, increasingly, been brushing over decent UK ecostats, as the shadow of Brexit uncertainty looms

heavily over any temporary optimism. Generally, business and consumer activity is expected to under-perform, as long as uncertainty remains about what will happen when the Brexit process concludes. As a result, investors are hesitant to buy the pound, even if UK data impresses.

Instead, focus has been on the possibility of a “nodeal” Brexit. Still seen as a worst-case scenario, the possibility of a “no-deal” Brexit has been keeping sterling on the back foot, in recent weeks. Meanwhile, the euro has benefited from a recent dip in demand for the US dollar.

Uncertainty about the Federal Reserve outlook, thanks to criticism from US President Donald Trump, as well as comments from the bank, stating that ratehikes will continue to be gradual, prompted a USdollar sell-off. For now, it seems unlikely that any UK data will

be impressive enough to significantly improve the pound outlook. Major UK PMI data for August will be published in the first week of September, but, even if it impresses, it’s unlikely to give sterling much more than a temporary leg-up, unless the Brexit outlook improves. Meanwhile, if Eurozone data comes in solidly, the euro may continue its uptrend against the US dollar and pound. No-deal Brexit stuns expat Brits in Spain

Drink-drive reading so hard to swallow! BRITISH expats in Europe could face losing access to their pensions, in the event of a no-deal Brexit, and also be hit with taxes when using credit cards. Annuities, deposit services, lending and insurance are just some of the financial actions in which expats could face difficulties if the EU does not act. UK citizens in the European Economic Area will not be able to access

these products without intervention from Brussels before the Brexit deadline. It comes after the UK Government released its no-deal preparation plans last Thursday, in a bid to offer guidance, should Britain leave the EU without a mutual agreement with the EU. It also revealed how credit-card users could face a so-called “Brexit tax”. Pensioners have also been warned of difficulties accessing their monthly payments, as claimed by insurance companies. Hugh Savill, director of regulation at the Association

of British Insurers, said leaving the EU without a deal would cause “major inconvenience” to millions of pensioners, travellers and drivers. He added: “We urge the Government to agree a deal as a matter of urgency.” Savill revealed that insurers have been making ‘contingency plans’ for months, but the issues are too deep-rooted for them to fix alone. The government said in its no-deal preparation papers that it will take unilateral action as much as it can, but that it will need European Union co-operation.

TRAFFIC police, alerted by motorists of a woman driving erratically in a green BMW 320, were stunned to discover, when they stopped her and asked for a breath-test, that she was eight times over Spain’s legal drink-drive limit. It is alleged that the 33-year-old, from Lugo, had been seen swerving across the road, and even into the path of oncoming traffic. Such was the reading that disbelieving cops, who had pulled her over in Palavea, performed the test again… and it proved even higher! The woman now holds the dubious record of having the highest drink-drive level recorded in the province

of La Coruña in Galicia, northern Spain. Spain has strict drink driving laws. According to the N332 website the legal alcohol limit is in general 0.25 mg/l – or 0.15 mg/l if you are a learner driver or professional driver. If the amount of alcohol exceeds this limit, the driver will be fined heavily and lose several points. In the event of the reading exceeding 0.60 mg/l, the driver becomes subject to a criminal proceeding and will be arrested. A blood test is available only when you have finished the breathalyser test, and you disagree with the result. Refusal to co-operate is also a criminal offence.

5 Gold Rings

Sunday 2nd September, ITV1, 19.00

Phillip Schofield is back with a second series of the worldwide hit 5 Gold Rings. In a new and even more exciting format, viewers will see two teams go head to head as they battle it out to answer a host of visual questions against the clock by placing ever smaller gold rings onto a supersized image displayed on an LED floor beneath their feet. The smaller the ring the bigger the money and the harder to pinpoint the answer. Phillip Schofield said: “I love the whole concept of this game, it’s a great family show that allows the viewers to take part and join in – whether that’s through the app or just pointing at their TV sets. The new twists also make for some really tense and exciting battles amongst the contestants.” For the teams the stakes are even higher as the they will now have just one chance to answer each question: if they answer the question correctly they will win the cash. But if they are incorrect, the opposing team will have the chance to steal that question – and the cash. This means they could now win DOUBLE the jackpot – over £50,000! To help the teams they will also be given the two ‘5 Gold Rings lifelines’. They can flip the floor revealing a new question and they can use their team of five, made up of family and friends sat in the audience who, using a digital tablet, will be able to place a virtual ring where they think the correct answer is. For the contestants, every pixel really does count as state of the art software, specially crafted for this game detects – down to just one pixel - exactly where each ring is placed on the floor. Each round gets decidedly more difficult as the gold rings decrease in size, making it even tougher to encircle the correct answer. As each ring decreases in size so the money increases.

DIY SOS: Grenfell

Wednesday 5 September, BBC1, 21.00

In this two-part series, Nick Knowles and the DIY SOS team are attempting by far their biggest and longest build yet, constructing two brand new buildings for the Grenfell community on a 750 square metre site over several months to create spaces worth about £2 million. Episode one. With the aid of large construction companies, generous suppliers, volunteers and the Duke of Cambridge (who visits the site), the team is building a new home for the Dale Youth Boxing Club, a west London success story. The boxing club takes on anyone who wants to train and has been helping youngsters in the area for over 50 years to acquire the discipline that boxing training brings. The club started the careers of James de Gale who won an Olympic gold medal in Beijing, and George Groves, current WBA Super Middleweight champion, as well as producing many national champions. From 1999 the club was housed in Grenfell Tower. A few months before the tragic fire which claimed 72 lives, the club moved into a newly refurbished space as part of the fateful fit out of the building. Since the fire, the club has been squatting temporarily in a gym in a disused car park, as trainer Mick Delaney is determined to carry on for the young people that use the club. These include 14 year-old Jodie, who says that boxing is helping him come to terms with the loss of a school friend in the fire. Jodie and Mick meet the Duke on his visit to the site, as he joins the build team and lends a hand with some undercoating, as he did on his previous visit to a DIY SOS site in Manchester building homes for veterans. This build was months in conception, planning, consultation with the community and was slated as a nine-week build from the ground up. It provided many firsts for Nick and the team: the challenge of building under a motorway and using steel construction as well as becoming it’s longest and largest build. The fire at Grenfell Tower moved people across the country, and thanks to the incredible generosity of building and engineering companies and suppliers and volunteers, Dale Youth Boxing club has a new secured home.

The Imitation Game is a high-energy panel show for ITV hosted by Alexander Armstrong, that sees team captains and top impressionists Rory Bremner and Debra Stephenson lead teams of the UK’s favourite mimics and comedians in a number of fastpaced games and challenges. Each week, both teams go head-to-head as they re-enact iconic movie scenes, re-voice news footage, blast out some surprising cover versions and put unlikely words in the mouths of all kinds of celebrities. This week, Rory Bremner and Debra Stephenson are joined by special guests Luke Kempner and Jess Robinson to perform a series of comedy games. Featuring a dazzling array of voices, some horribly miscast movies, show-stopping musical impersonations and an hilarious attempt to date Christopher Biggins.

Mother’s Day BBC2, 21.00

Following the 1993 Warrington bomb attack which left two boys dead, a grieving family and a Dublin housewife form an unlikely alliance to bring about peace and heal communities on both sides of the Irish Sea. Sue McHugh (Vicky McClure), an unassuming and usually shy Dublin housewife, is deeply affected by news of the tragedy. Spurred into action by the events in Warrington and the hope that she can make a difference, Sue urges people across Ireland to demonstrate that the killings on all sides must stop. But has Sue underestimated the challenge of brokering peace in a community that has known such conflict? As the grieving Wendy and Colin Parry (Anna Maxwell Martin and Daniel Mays) search desperately for answers to their son Tim’s senseless killing, they form an alliance with Sue, her husband Arthur (David Wilmot), and their Peace ‘93 movement, travelling to Dublin in a bid to bring about peace and ensure Tim’s enduring legacy is one of hope and tolerance.

In a new two part series on BBC Two eight British Jews with a broad range of opinions, beliefs and practices, go on a journey to explore what it means to be Jewish in Britain today and examine some of the most pressing questions and challenges facing the Jewish community at home and in Israel. In the first episode, the group meet in Manchester, home to the UK’s largest Jewish community outside of London. After getting to know each other, and discovering their differences, they’ll explore what antisemitism looks and feels like in modern Britain and reflect on how perceptions of Israel affect them here at home. They’ll meet the owner of a local restaurant which has been attacked a number of times in recent years and talk to a Labour MP who has been the focus of abuse online. The group will go on to meet with Jewish students, where they’ll hear how they have needed security when they have held Israel events on campus. The group then travels to Israel, the country many of the group call their homeland. Starting their journey on a Kibbutz, a communal farm, they’ll get some stark reminders of the realities of life in the Jewish State and meet a young American woman who has volunteered to serve in the Israeli Defense Forces.

International gang traded in endangered turtles and tortoises, worth a fortune

Shell-shocked

Police hunt for Brit killer

officers!

OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil’s animal protection group, Seprona, have smashed an international crime gang, who have been trading in some of the costliest species of turtles and tortoises in the world. The officers rescued some 1,100 reptiles and recovered 750 eggs, but these figures are expected to increase, because more than 200 females were about to lay eggs. They included 14 of the

50 most-endangered species, some originating from Canada, Mexico and the US, and all protected by respective national legislation. There were also turtles from South Asia, considered at high risk of extinction, in addition to black turtles, listed as “vulnerable” in Spain. The total value of the haul is estimated to be 600,000 euros, with some of the species each valued at up to 10,000 euros. The operation began in February 2017 when Guardia Civil officers seized turtles at Mallorca airport, because the documentation did not match the shipment.

Police later discovered a Mallorcan farm, devoted to the industrial breeding of turtles and tortoises. It is alleged that the owners collaborated closely with a Barcelona pet shop, specialising in exotic animals. Two people were arrested in Mallorca and one in Barcelona, accused of offences against wild fauna and flora, smuggling protected species and money-laundering. Three other suspects were being questioned. Europol supported the operation by co-ordinating the exchange of information between Spain and Austria, France, Germany and Italy.

A BRITISH tourist, who murdered an Argentine expat with a single punch and has been identified by the National Police, is already back in the UK. The holiday-maker, whose name has not been revealed, punched 65-yearold Mario Sauco in the back of the head in Fuengirola. It caused him to fall, hitting his head on the ground. He was in a coma for 10 days before dying. A witness photographed the aggressor with his mobile phone, which was circulated through social networks to try to identify him. Investigators went to every store, every beach bar, restaurant and hotel in the area in search of information about the attacker. After several days, they discovered the suspect’s full

name, and have requested an international arrest warrant. An onlooker told the Diario Sur newspaper that the Brit stayed near the body after punching him, because he was not moving. He added: “He was crying and said, ‘I think I have killed a man’”. According to the Brit, Mario had “touched-up” a 16-year-old girl in a bar, but the witness understood it was his daughter. After hearing his version of events, another witness told him to “run, run”, before the cops arrived. Researchers, who found the bar, were able to interview everyone who was present. But other witnesses say that Mario ran his hand over the shoulder of the bar-owner’s teenage niece, and he asked the man to leave. But the Briton, said to be a friend of the owner’s brother, went after him and walloped him once.

The hunt goes on for missing mum A WORRIED Manchester family have issued another public appeal to find Marie McManus, who vanished more than four weeks ago on Spain’s Costa del Sol.

Expats living in southern Spain, and holiday-makers, particularly in the coastal resorts of Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Torremolinos, Malaga and Marbella, are being urged to circulate her details and spread the word. Marie McManus, aged 42, used her credit card to pay for a hotel in Torremolinos

on 8th July, and the card was last used three days later, in the same holiday resort. Her mother was the last person to speak to her, on 15th July. Declan McManus said: “If anyone happens to be in

Benalmadena, Fuengirola or surrounding areas, please keep your eyes peeled for Marie, or just get her to call my mum.” He told the Manchester Evening News: “We just want her to call one of

us, to let us know she is okay. If she doesn’t want to come home that’s fine. We just want to know she’s safe and well. Interpol has contacted my mother, and a flag has been placed on her passport, which means

she will be spoken to if she tries to leave a country, via an airport or port. She will just be asked if she is okay. “We’ve heard that she might have got a job on a boat somewhere, but we are not sure. We just do not know what to do. We hope that she has just gone off the radar and does not want to be contacted, which is fine. We just want to know she is safe. “We have been told by the police not to travel out to Spain because there is not much to go on.” Declan urged anyone with information to contact the police in Spain, via its 112 emergency number, or the UK police on 101.

After-market extras By Emma

from Motorworld

SOMETIMES, we think we've found the car of our dreams, but something's missing. It could be reversing bleepers, a camera for assisting when parking, a better radio that has Bluetooth … the list is endless. Often, we are put off adding these aids because we think it's either not possible on our car, or would be too expensive. Here, we are going to look at the options available in

Tenerife, which will not be as comprehensive as they would be in the UK, but, nonetheless, they are available. Parking sensors With these fitted, a car senses its surroundings, and they are probably one of the most widely-used extras. However, they are not yet standard on all vehicles. The sensors are mounted on the bumpers, and they detect the distance of obstacles eg posts, other cars and shopping trolleys, from the extremities of the car. They deliver an audible beep, which gradually becomes louder, the closer you get. Some systems are now combined with a digital graphic, which looks similar to a camera or GPS screen. It shows which part of the car is closest to the object, allowing for a

safer, more-accurate manoeuvre. It’s generally possible to fit these to most cars and vans, often preventing scrapes and scratches, and minor damage to your car. Reversing and/or 360-degree cameras These are a step-up from parking sensors, and some vehicles now feature a rear-facing camera. Mounted high up, and pointing

slightly downward, they show obstacles far more clearly than the rear-view mirror can. These cameras use a wide-angle lens to give you a broad field of view, around the back of the car. These images are relayed to the driver, usually by a screen mounted in the dashboard, and often feature guide lines which show the

direction of the car, based on the current steering angle and its proximity to obstacles. This is especially useful for those who have difficulty in reversing into allotted spaces, or into a parallel-parking space, for example, on the side of a road. The 360-degree cameras are generally fitted as standard on the new, high-end vehicles such as BMWs and Range Rovers, but it’s also possible to fit them on more “run-of-the-mill” vehicles, for want of a better description. With this type it enables you to view, more accurately, the space available and the position of the wheels. This makes it far easier to see whether or not you'll be able to squeeze into the last available space, or if you're about to scrape those posh alloy

wheels, or even your car! Car stereos I doubt there are many drivers who are never happier than when they are driving along, singing to their favourite song, albeit out of tune! When first sold, many cars had pretty-basic stereos fitted, as well as small speakers, so the quality of the sound was pretty mediocre. Many people like to listen to music from their phones, iPods or similar devices, via Bluetooth, but the stereo must be compatible. So, to make your driving experience less stressful and more enjoyable, and you a happier driver, the consideration of installing one of the above might well pay dividends for you. For more information, contact Emma at Motorworld.

Red meat and dairy no threat to health By Val Sainsbury NEW research suggests that current dietary guidelines should be revised, to account for the dietary habits of modern populations from across the globe. Unprocessed red meat and dairy, for instance, should be included as part of a heart-healthy diet. Many studies suggest that a diet which avoids red meat and dairy, but is rich in fruit, vegetables, nuts and whole grains, is the best for heart health. However, new research suggests that we should amend these guidelines. The study, led by Professor Salim Yusuf, at McMaster University in Hamilton, Canada, suggests that the results of these traditional studies may be biased and outdated. Specifically, explain the researchers, such studies are based on the dietary habits of high-income countries, and rely on data from

decades ago. For these reasons, the new study aimed to make a more-comprehensive

analysis of people's dietary patterns, across the world. Its findings were

presented at the 2018 annual conference of the European Society of Cardiology, held in Munich, Germany. The researchers have also published their results in the medical journal, The Lancet. Diet and cardiovascular health For the study, Prof Yusuf and colleagues examined the link between diet and heart health in almost 140,000 healthy people, aged 35-70, who were clinically followed for over nine years. During this period, 6,821 people died of a cardiovascular disease, and 5,466 experienced major cardiovascular events, such as heart attack, strokes and heart failure. The quality of the participants' diets was assessed, using a food score. To develop the score, the researchers included foods that previous studies suggested might lower the risk of premature death, such as fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, dairy products and meat. Andrew Mente, the study's co-

principal investigator, summarises the findings. “People who consumed a diet emphasising fruit, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, dairy products and meat had the lowest risks of cardiovascular disease and early death,” he says. “Regarding meat, we found that unprocessed meat is associated with benefit.” Specifically, compared with people who scored the lowest on the quality of their diet, those with the highest

quality score were 11% less likely to experience a major cardiovascular event, 17% less likely to have a stroke, and 25% less likely to die of any cause. Additionally, the findings suggest that the intake of refined carbs should be limited, but that dairy and unprocessed red meat may be healthful. “Our results appeared to apply to people from different parts of the world, and so the findings are globally applicable,” explains researcher Mahshid Dehghan.

Music scouts may soon have DJ Luke in mind LUKE Maynard has been a role model for the 1st Tenerife Scout Group since its inception, more than four years ago.

So much so that he is now a young leader, and helps his seniors, whenever and wherever necessary. But there is another side to 15-year-old Luke, because he is also a budding DJ, song-writer and singer, and is, slowly but surely, making his mark. He has been into music for a number of years, and has, recently, written, performed and produced his second single called Free, featuring Stacey T. He has also released a video of the song, which is featured on YouTube, and, earlier this year, Luke entered a DJ competition at Kaluma Beach, and won through to the finals, despite being the youngest entrant. A few weeks ago, he joined Oasis Fm’s DJ Dylan, in the studio, for an afternoon session behind

the mic. Dylan, who also sings, said: “He’s on the way, that’s for sure. I don’t think the record companies will be queueing up for his services just yet, but I’m sure they will be in the next couple of years. He’s pretty handy behind the mic, as well.” Luke, who has talent in

abundance, said: “I am aware that things don’t just happen overnight, but I’m confident that something will happen. I’m not even sure in which direction I want to travel, but I love performing live in front of big audiences, so I guess DJ’ing would be my first choice.”

Steve Leisel, who runs Tenerife’s Scout Group, said: “We are extremely proud of what all our young members achieve, and we try to encourage them at whatever outside activities they like, be it Luke with his DJ’ing, or others achieving awards at football or other hobbies.”

Meanwhile, DJ Luke is making a name for himself around some of the top Tenerife venues, including Kaluna Beach Club, in Las Americas. He will be appearing at La Orotava’s annual Colour Fest tomorrow (Saturday), and he has already been offered a job at O’Neill’s Bar and Nightclub, in the Veronicas, when he is old enough, of course. Meanwhile, as he dreams of a successful career, Luke, who lives at Las Chafiras, still has all the time in the world for his scout group, based at Costa del Silencio.

Stars in their eyes! TENERIFE astronomers Aleksandra Blaszczyk and Charles Westphal are convinced they can bring the stars, moon and sun closer to people on earth, via an enormous telescope. They are sure the optical instrument being constructed will be on a par with the world’s biggest, in La Palma, and will even impress fellow-astronomers. But theirs will be available to the public! The couple, from Poland, run the Astronomy and Science Centre from an observatory on the side of Mount Teide, featuring four telescopes of varying sizes. They have studied astronomy for several years, and Charles said: “I live and breathe them, day and night, and have done since my college days.” The monster telescope should be ready in four years, and Charles said: “It

will be the biggest one in the world, available to the public, and we are getting funding from the EU.” In addition, the couple, who have been together for 14 years, are also backed by a university in Poland and another in England. They have a company at their Teide observatory called Travel Tenerife, which is a planetarium experience, open six evenings a week. Call 602 699 629 for more details. These star-gazing trips are extremely popular with residents and tourists alike, and, said Aleksandra: “It’s

a real eye-opener for firsttimers.” So enjoyable are they that Travel Tenerife has twice been voted “Best Excursion in the World” by the Luxury Travel Guide. On top of all this, the couple are staging a unique event in their mobile, popup planetarium at Gran Sur’s Hollywood Restaurant tomorrow (Saturday) between 2-8pm. It holds up to 60 people at a time, and sessions last one hour. “We are showing two videos, from NASA (America’s National Aeronautics and Space Administration),

and from Germany’s ESO Supernova, which are both breath-taking and brilliant,” said Charles. “It is our aim to bring astronomy closer to people, and we have prepared a book on the subject for children and parents to make it easy, and accessible to all.” The fund-raising event, for Tenerife children’s charity Helping Hands, costs 15 euros for adults and 10 euros for children, which includes the planetarium

show and telescope views of the sun, as well as a raffle, and a delicious, Lebanese, Star Burger meal. Tickets can still be obtained from the Hollywood Restaurant, or via Facebook’s Astronomy and Science Centre, and Helping Hands in Tenerife. Charles added: “We intend to turn this into a weekly, Saturday workshop, and we also hope to take the event to schools, for children of all ages, to try to make science cool for them.”

Aromatherapy By kaizen wellness & Beauty

for hair and scalp

DRY hair, greasy hair, itchy scalp; there’s every treatment under the sun available, but so many are full of synthetic, harsh chemicals. As with skincare ranges, more and more of us are becoming allergic or sensitive to these chemicals. So, the more we can make our own products, the more control we gain over our health and wellbeing. The other issue is cost. Many hair-care products and scalp treatments are fiercely expensive, as well as often being ineffective, so using natural recipes can save you money, as well as helping to protect your long-term health. Remember, as with your skin, the condition of your hair and scalp are very much a reflection of your general wellbeing. Hair growth/

loss and condition can be a real barometer of certain, nutritional deficiencies, and real stress indicators. As far as the reasons behind hair loss are concerned, these can vary between men and women. Gradual receding hair and hair loss

on men can be determinated by genetic male pattern baldness, although sudden hair loss can still be related to nutrtitional deficiences and stress. For women, thinner hair and hair loss can be attributed to a more-complicated

range of reasons, from hormonal imbalances and menopausal symptoms, to protein and amino-acid deficiencies, stress, damage from harsh, chemical hair treatment, and even intestinal parasites. There are certain herbs

and nutrients that can help treat hair loss, even in relation to male pattern baldness and alopecia. These symptoms often require a multi-factored approach, because they will usually arise from a number of different issues coming together, simultaneously. Learning to read and act on these symptoms may also help prevent more-serious, long-term problems in the future. * Don’t wash your hair too often * Try to let your hair dry naturally, at least some of the time * Use a natural bristle brush, and brush your hair regulary * Use shampoos that are free of sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS-free) * Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet because it’s more elastic and fragile, and can snap off more easily. Ginger's so good for you

GINGER is a popular ingredient in cooking, especially in Asian and Indian cuisine. It has also been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes. Its possible health benefits include relieving nausea, loss of appetite, motion sickness and pain. The root or underground stem (rhizome) of the ginger plant can be consumed fresh, powdered, dried as a spice, in oil form, or as juice. It is commonly produced in India, Jamaica, Fiji, Indonesia, and Australia. It is available fresh and dried, as ginger extract and ginger oil, and in tinctures, capsules and lozenges. Foods that contain ginger include gingerbread, cookies, ginger snaps, ginger ale, and a wide variety of savoury recipes.

Benefits Root or powdered ginger adds flavour to many dishes, and it can benefit health, too. Consuming fruits and vegetables of all kinds has long been associated with a reduced risk of many lifestyle-related health conditions. However, some herbs and spices may offer additional health benefits. One of these is ginger. Digestion The phenolic compounds in ginger are known to help relieve gastrointestinal (GI) irritation, stimulate saliva and bile production, and suppress gastric contractions as food and fluids move through the GI tract. It could also help prevent colon cancer and constipation. Nausea Chewing raw ginger or drinking ginger tea is a common home remedy for nausea during cancer treatment. Taking ginger for motion sickness seems to reduce feelings of nausea,

but it does not appear to prevent vomiting. It is safe to use during pregnancy, to relieve nausea, and is available in the form of ginger lozenges or sweets. Cold and flu relief During cold weather, drinking ginger tea is good way to keep warm. It is diaphoretic, which means that it promotes sweating, working to warm the body from within. To make ginger tea at home, slice 20-40 grams of fresh ginger, and steep it in a cup of hot water. Adding a slice of lemon or a drop of honey adds flavour and additional benefits, including Vitamin C and antibacterial properties. This makes a soothing natural remedy for a cold or flu. Inflammation and pain reduction Ginger has been used for centuries to reduce inflammation and treat inflammatory conditions. A study reported that ginger

supplements reduced the risk of colorectal cancer developing in the bowel of 20 volunteers. Ginger has also been found to be “modestly efficacious and reasonably safe for treating inflammation associated with osteoarthritis. Cardiovascular health Other possible uses include reducing cholesterol, lowering the risk of blood clotting, and helping to maintain healthy bloodsugar levels. More research is needed, but, if proven, ginger could become part of a treatment for heart disease and diabetes. In recipes Fresh or dried ginger can be used to flavour foods and drinks, without adding unnecessary salt or sugar. Since it is often consumed in such small amounts, ginger does not add significant quantities of calories, carbohydrate, protein or fibre. It pairs well with many

different types of seafood, oranges, melon, pork, chicken, pumpkin, rhubarb and apples, to name a few. When buying fresh ginger, look for a root with smooth, taut skin, with no wrinkles, and a spicy aroma. Store fresh ginger in a tightly-wrapped plastic bag in the refrigerator or freezer, and peel and grate it before use. Add it to any suitable dish for extra flavour. If fresh ginger is not available, you can use dried. In most recipes, one-eighth of a teaspoon of ground ginger can be substituted for one tablespoon of fresh, grated ginger. Ground ginger can be found in the herbs-and-spices section of most grocery stores. Tasty ways to use ginger: *Add fresh ginger to a smoothie or juice *Add fresh or dried ginger to a stir-fry or homemade salad dressing *Use fresh or dried ginger to spice up any fish recipe

Malbasic beats congestion Almeria 1 CD Tenerife 1 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife update

TWO away points is not a bad start, but, as promotion hopefuls, Tenerife should have exploited a man advantage, for most of the second half. It was a case of too many cooks, with new strikers Nano and Naranjo struggling to find their space and form, so it was up to much-maligned Felip Malbasic to hit a thunderbolt goal to snatch a 1-1 draw at Almeria. The starting line-up looked strange. Midfield star Brian Acosta was dropped for “tactical reasons”, and right-back Luis Perez was pushed up to midfield, with Raul Camara taking over as the back marker. Naranjo was wasted on the left wing, Acosta was sorely missed, and even the brilliance of Luis Milla wasn’t enough to light up the midfield. Perez supplied some good, deep crosses from his new, elevated position, which offered a route to goal. Malbasic, who always wanted the ball, laid off a decent pass to Naranjo. But he didn’t react fast enough, and keeper Rene mopped up.

Almeria had signed 15 new players in the summer, including Juan Carlos Real from Tenerife, and he played a part in their opening goal. Dani Hernandez had just made a fine, one-handed save on the edge of his area. But he was found wanting, when Juan Carlos fed the ball into the goalmouth. Rioja nipped in for a shot, and Dani, who was floundering, could only clip the ball with his boot as it sailed into the net. Tenerife tried to hit back, but though Nano had a half-chance, he bundled off by Trujillo, and the half ended with Almeria ahead. Tenerife improved in the second half, just as they did the previous week, and the card-happy ref lent them a hand. A second

booking for De La Hoz, for fouling Alberto, saw him dispatched to the dressingroom. Suso had come on for Camara, adding his drive down the right, and things were beginning to happen. Nano found Luis Milla, who scraped a shot wide, and Millla set up Malbasic, who also fired wide on the turn. Sub Undabarrena found Nano, whose powerful header really did test the keeper. Then, with 10 minutes remaining, the ball broke to Malbasic, 25 yards out from the goal, with two defenders bearing down on him. He looked up, picking his spot for a stunning equaliser. A win was in sight for Tenerife, and Nano’s best move of the game came

with his back to goal, but his instinctive turn and hooked shot just cleared the bar. But there was still danger at the other end. Caballero was in the penalty area, Carlos Ruiz missed his tackle and Alberto knocked the home striker over with a two-handed push to the chest. It looked a certain penalty and a dismissal for the previously-booked Alberto. But the ref was away with the fairies and totally ignored it. It could have ended even better for Tenerife in injury-time, but

Milla’s long shot on goal just grazed the bar. Tomorrow (Saturday), Tenerife will test their newly-relaid pitch when Deportivo visit Santa Cruz for a 7.30pm kick-off. Columbian winger Joao Rodriguez should be back from injury, and, hopefully, Malbasic will have recovered from a pulled leg muscle in the Almeria game. Relegated Deportivo are hot favourites to regain their La Liga place, but Tenerife like nothing better than upsetting fancied rivals.

HOW DIVINE ... HECTOR IS ALL SET FOR THE DEFENCE

HECTOR Hernandez, a left-sided defender, has signed for CD Tenerife from Real Sociedad, squeezing in before the transfer deadline closes tonight (Friday). The 27-year-old had been loaned to Granada and Alaves in the last year, and, though Tenerife were blessed with plenty of strikers, they still needed defensive cover. So, after their annual trip to pay homage and receive a season’s blessing from the Virgen del Candelaria on Wednesday, President Miguel Concepcion promised a new defender. Carlos Ruiz and Lucas Aveldaño have started the first two league games as the central pairing, but both

are over 30, while 21-yearold Jorge Saenz simply

hasn’t lived up to his early promise, which earned him

an Under-20 cap for Spain. The new defender’s name

wasn’t released until yesterday (Thursday) afternoon, and, hopefully, the transfer window will close tonight with no departures. The goalkeeping situation also needed resolving, with three guardians in the senior squad. Dani Hernandez has become a legend between the sticks, and his back-up, Angel Galvan, is having to play the waiting game. That would have left Carlos Adab kicking his heels, with little prospect of any regular games. But he was loaned to Cordoba for the season in midweek, although Tenerife underlined their long-term faith in the 23-year-old by extending his contract until 2022.

A hell of a decision for The Red Devils

U N F O R T U NATELY, The Red Devils are the latest team to pull out of the league, after struggling to find players for the last few weeks. But fair play to them, for carrying on as long as possible. Gaffers displayed topclass darts and finish-

ing, as Sandy’s came visiting, with Tomo hitting a 140 check-out, and Daniel’s 171 score helping the home team to an 8-0 whitewash. Paul and Wayne set the tone as The Loch-In ‘A’ travelled to Marilyns ‘A’. In a closely-fought contest, both players hit maximums, and Paul’s excellent finishing gave the visitors a 5-3 victory, after winning the trebles. Picasso’s recorded a rare win after welcom-

THERE was no happy return from Gran Canaria for Marino, who were caught cold in their first Tercera Division game. Home player Dailos scored in the second minute when he latched on to a Samu header. But though Marino steadied the ship, the same player doubled the advantage with a shot from outside the area, just before half-time.

Bullseyes, close behind The Loch-In, enjoyed an 8-0 win against Naughty Nautas to keep hot on the leaders’ heels in second place.

No joy from island-hopping San Mateo 3 CD Marino 1 And it would have been worse for the visitors had Saavedra not cleared a goal-bound shot off the line. Three half-time subs from Marino made things harder for San Mateo. Johny, Edgar and Yassine took over from Javi, Prince and Gaizka, and the game became more even.

11

With just five minutes left, Johny threw Marino a lifeline with a goal. But it just wasn´t enough, and Samu sealed the points for San Mateo with a strike, well into injury-time. This Sunday, Marino host local rivals UD Guimar in Playa de Las Americas, at noon.

Cycling FOLLOWING in the tyre tracks of Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, a Kent-based cycling team are taking on 13 other teams in this year’s Tour de Tenerife race.

It started in La Laguna yesterday (Thursday), and will finish at the same location on Sunday 2nd September. Four daily stages include an overseas trip to La Gomera today (Friday). The line-up includes a team each from Belgium and France, plus four from mainland Spain, as well as seven Canarian packs, in this grand international challenge, now in its 63rd year. TBW23 Stuart Hall Gett Taxi Bottecchia team are based in Gillingham and led by Daniel Nieto. Explaining the connection, he said: “I used to race in Spain, and some of our other six riders have also experienced it. “So, when the chance came up to enter this year’s Tour de Tenerife, we were keen to get involved. “Sorting out flights was the biggest hurdle, but, once here, we joined all the other teams at the Puerto de la Cruz base. And the organisation

by OAD La Laguna (the council’s specialist sports department) has been very good.” The first day was 44.5 kms (10 laps) around the mainly-flat streets of La Laguna, starting and ending at the Plaza. Today (Friday), crews and bikes will have been taken down to Los Cristianos to

catch the early ferry across to San Sebastian for a 65.6 km day, before they return to the main port to head back to Tenerife. September dawns with a

46.1 km ride from La Laguna to the Tenerife Observatory, at Inaza. The final day (Sunday has a 47.2km chase, from Santa Cruz to the La Laguna finish line.

There will be sprint and mountain stages for the near-100 riders to negotiate, so it’s going to be a testing, but rewarding, challenge.

EXTRA-TIME FOOTBALL: Everyone wants to be a football star, even the fastest man in the world. Usain Bolt has long expressed his love of the game, and has even trained with Manchester United. Now the 32-yearold, retired sprinter, is training with Central Coast Mariners, from Australia’s A League. He must be a nightmare for any defender to mark… even Skippy would struggle to keep one hop ahead of him! MUAY THAI KICK BOXING: Acentejo, in the north of Tenerife, was the venue for the La Victoria Acentejo NAK event last weekend, and the Brits did rather well. Jason O’Hara, from Southport, beat Marcel Gonzalez to win the light-welterweight contest, and Jack Kennedy, also from the Southport gym, triumphed in the junior flyweight division. SWIM & RUN: Look out for a whirl of activity at Las Vistas beach, Los Cristianos, on Sunday (2nd Sept) between 8-9.30am. Some will be tackling the 1.2km Travesia A Nado, but others will be taking a splash and dash in the Acuathlon. The combined event involves a 4km run, sandwiched between two 1.2km swims. Those two events are already booked up, but if you fancy a 8km night run, try the Nocturna Arona on Saturday, 22nd Sept, from 8.30pm. Entry fees are 12 euros, at www.rockthesport.com LADIES’ FOOTBALL: Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife close their pre-season, warm-up programme on Sunday in Portugal, against Sporting Braga. The game is being shown live on TV Canaria at noon.

La Liga

Grounds for concern! MONEY is definitely swilling around La Liga for players, but the spotlight last weekend was on problems in two stadiums: the Zorilla ground in Valladolid, and Rayo Vallecano’s Vallecas pitch.

They both made headlines, for all the wrong reasons. Barcelona won 1-0 at Valladolid on a playing surface they described

as a “disgrace” and a “beach”. Throughout the game, big clumps of grass were churning up until it resembled a ploughed field. La Liga officials have launched an urgent inquiry into the state of the pitch, and whether it is fit to be used in the near future. Disciplinary proceedings may be taken against the home club for endangering players, and turning what could have been a spectacle into a farce. There were even-moreserious problems at Rayo

Vallecano, on the outskirts of Madrid, during their match against Sevilla. Work is being carried out on the stadium’s structure, and a four-year-old fan fell down a hole, sustained injuries and needed hospital treatment. The immediate reaction from La Liga was to close the ground to the public until 15th October. But, in the aftermath, Rayo Vallecano fans claimed they had already made several complaints about the stadium’s dangerous areas, but to no avail.

They then tweeted: “The last 48 hours have been amazing; over £60,000 in orders for our shirts, mostly from Spain. “We are trying hard to answer (and often first translate) everyone’s questions, so please stay patient. Our

organising committee, #WeAreTheClapton, will reply to you as soon as possible. “We started off hoping to honour, in a small way, the memory of the International Brigades, especially the British volunteers, with our away shirt. Your extraordinary generosity will now help us to build our new club, too.” The club added: “Replica shirts are currently being sold on a pre-order basis because we do not have much stock, so they could take up to two months to arrive because of the ordering and manufacturing process. Please be patient with us! “Due to completely unexpected and unprecedented demand, we have now become liable to charge 20% VAT on our merchandise.” “We apologise for the sudden jump in prices, but hope you understand that the level of interest has taken us by surprise, and it is necessary to fulfil our tax obligations.”

And the evening’s music includes Thelorinx (urban dance), The Taxman (rockpop), Renzzo, and La Maldita.

All the day’s events are free and open to everyone of all ages. It’s going to be a fun day, in a beautiful setting.
