Sick humpback needs peace Cont. from Front But once word spread that it was, perhaps, the chance of a lifetime to see such an astonishing sight, several people took to small boats to witness the enormous beast, weighing up to 30 tons, and they followed her around, some half-a-mile from the Guaza Mountain. So excited was underwater photographer specialist Sergio Hanquet, that, with permission from MAPAMA (the Ministry of Fishing and Agriculture), he dropped everything he’d planned for the day, after receiving an excited phone call from a colleague. Sergio, who lives in Tenerife, headed straight out to sea, along with his son, Jimmy, to document the sighting, as well as enjoy the fantastic experience. A delighted Sergio said: “Thanks to the animal, who was very quiet and stayed in the area for several hours, I had enough time to document the sighting and take pictures under the surface of the ocean.” He added: “I had an adrenaline rush, even before I left home. My friend and colleague, David, warned me about the presence of the whale, a short distance from Los Cristianos Port, at 11.30am, so I abandoned all

THREE ambulances and their crews assisted a woman in labour at a petrol station in Tenerife’s northern municipality of La Guancha. Staff at San Juan de Las Ramblas garage witnessed the birth of a healthy baby girl on Tuesday, after the young mum-to-be had a feeling her baby was on its way. She contacted a family member around midday, to drive over and take her to the hospital, but, while they were on the way, she realised that things were moving even quicker than she thought they were. She was certain she was going in full labour, and that the birth was imminent. With that, the family member pulled over into the nearest petrol station, and, from there, the call was made to the emergency services, While the couple awaited the ambulance, a doctor on the other end of the phone was advising the young mum what to do: how to breathe, as well as trying

my commitments and went out to sea, accompanied by my son, Jimmy.” The huge animal was extremely calm, remaining in the area for several hours, before moving on to Los Gigantes. But she stayed long enough in the original area for Sergio to observe and document her visit, as well as take some spectacular photographs on the ocean surface, as well as below. Unfortunately, while observing her underwater, Sergio noticed that she looked worn and fairly thin, and was covered in small

parasites. It is a normal phenomenon with these huge animals, but not as many as she was carrying, and her physical state was probably down to her advanced age. Whales have visited this area before, infrequently, and this particular animal is one of 30 species, which can be seen on rare occasions in Canarian waters. Onlookers saw the magnificent view of her spouting water through the blow hole, then taking a dive, leaving the sight everyone wanted: her tail fin on the surface.

And, according to respected photographer Sergio, she is “the mother of all whales”. The humpback whale, when fully fit, weighs up to 40 tons, with a life expectancy of between 40-50 years. But various vets want to assist this particular whale, and the La Tahonilla Wild Life Recovery Centre, attached to Tenerife Cabildo, has provided some assistance to the 11-metre specimen. After vets observed the whale, it emerged that the animal was displaying several health problems, which was worrying.

For this reason, La Tahonilla has taken measures to monitor the cetacean. Environmental Councillor José Antonio Valbuena said technicians from the Canarian Government’s Biodiversity Department had detected many problems, including the external parasites, as well as exhaustion and lack of body mass. That is why La Tohinilla and the Guardia Civil are requesting the public’s collaboration. Officials are asking for recreational boats to stay away from the whale, bearing in mind its probable ill-health. They also add that the stress it is suffering could be caused by constant visits from several boats. Humpback whales occupy any seas or oceans, except around the Arctic Circle. They normally frequent warmer waters during the reproductive season, which is why experts believe the whale has made her presence in Canarian waters. During migration, the whales are known to consume very little food over a long period of time. Occasionally, they lose weight because of this, which could be another reason why our visitor is looking thinner than she should.

Ambulances roll out for quick-fire birth of baby!

to calm down the mum-inlabour. Before long, three ambulances, complete with crews, arrived at the station to assist the expectant, 26-year-old

woman. They discovered, shortly, that they had arrived in the nick of time. A doctor from one ambulance took over the fantastic work performed

by the telephone doctor, before a baby girl presented herself to the world. They were transferred to the university hospital, where they were admitted

for observation and recovery. Circumstances aside, the birth went smoothly, and both mum and baby daughter are doing well.

Mayors tell tourism chief: We must have more funds SPAIN’S Tourism Minister, Reyes Maroto, met the mayors of the Canarian Tourism Borough’s Association (AMTC) last Saturday, at Arona Gran Hotel. She was welcomed by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, who is also AMTC President, and Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, on behalf of the association. But the need to improve funding to help upgrade many aspects of the sector was soon impressed on her. The mayors, who form the most important part of the AMTC, outlined the realities of the sector during her working visit, as well as the challenges and objectives for the top-line Canarian destinations in the coming years, to ensure they remain competitive. Other mayors present were Marco Aurelio Pérez (San Bartolomé), Onalia Bueno (Mogán), and Pedro Martín (Guía de Isora). The Tourism Minister, accompanied by regional government representative Elena Máñez and Héctor Gómez, Director-General of Turespaña, visited various parts of the zone during the morning.

Mayor Rodríguez Fraga said: “It would seem, at last, that Madrid is realising the value of tourism in the Canaries, and what we, the main tourism boroughs, contribute to the Spanish economy and society.” There was cutting reference to the 1% national budget allocation to the region, even though these tourism boroughs contribute 30% of the Canarian GDP, and 6% at national level. The AMTC continues to press for the national government to change

“It would seem, at last, that Madrid is realising the value of tourism in the Canaries, and what we, the main tourism boroughs, contribute to the Spanish economy and society.” Mayor Rodríguez Fraga the manner of costing and finance, to reflect the contribution made by the member-boroughs. The funding, allocated

from central government, is simply based on the numbers of residents registered. But in many of the tourism boroughs, the

actual numbers of people living and staying there, and using municipal services, is far in excess of the numbers on the residents’register. This inconsistency can affect important bodies, too, like regional police and other security details, said the mayors. There was also question of whether the PITCAN, a Canarian tourism infrastructure plan, involving regional and national administrations, should be reactivated. Other matters discussed included the need for tourism boroughs to be at the vanguard of digital innovations. “5G is the future, and we need to improve our digital connectivity,” said Marco Aurelio Pérez. “If we want to remain competitive and ahead of our rivals, this issue must be addressed.” Pedro Martín and Onalia Bueno stressed the importance of a transversal axis of administrations and other bodies to the minister, saying: “Tourism is more than promotion. “It brings a series of needs and realities together, which must be managed, including issues of quality and good service, and caring for those who live here, as well as those who visit and use the local services and infrastructure.”

Employment scheme to enhance the rural areas

ADEJE Council’s Department of Economic Development, Employment and Environment, in tandem with the Social Services, have initiated a plan for rural employment.

It is called PER, which will see improvements to many rural zones in the borough, and will almost certainly see more people employed to “improve the midlands of Adeje”. Councillors Manuel Luis Méndez Martín and María Esther Rivero Vargas said: “This project allows us to meet several needs. On one hand, we can offer employment to people

aged between 35-60, who are currently without work. “And, at the same time, it will improve rural parts of our borough… areas that are visited by the public and have an ethnographic value (the study of people and cultures).” Those who participate in the scheme will be offered work for three months. They will receive training and information regarding the zones in which they will be working, including, probably, La Quinta, Ifonche, Taucho, La Concepción and Tijoco Alto. The Councillors added: “We hope the work will contribute to raise general awareness of the value of our environment, as well as the need to care for it, among other things.”

A smooth drive into El Medano planned Guardia Civil smash Canarian drug gang

ONE of the most active drug rings within the Canary Islands has been smashed, thanks to the diligence of all officers involved.

The gang had been one of the most active drugtrafficking organisations in the Canaries. But nine people, seven Spaniards and two Moroccans, were arrested by Guardia Civil officers, who also seized a staggering 2,650kg of hashish. During the operation, the Guardia intercepted a fishing boat, owned by a fully-legitimate business, but used by the gang to

mask their illegal activities. It was employed to collect the hashish from another boat, which had set sail from Morocco. But as well as the fishing boat, the Guardia also seized several vehicles, used by the group. Most of the nine people arrested were considered to be the most active drug-traffickers across the archipelago. But even the investigation team were astounded by the gang’s ability to move such a huge weight of drugs on a monthly basis. The Guardia’s operation, named Cardon/Samurai, began last December and ended last week, to the satisfaction of officers.

GRANADILLA council has invested a total of 1.4m euros on a maintenance project, for, specifically, the main El Medano access road, starting next week. The road will be resurfaced and widened, maintenance will be carried out on the drainage system, and a five-

Death-threat nurse rescued by a guard

A NURSE at Candelaria Hospital was subject to death threats last Sunday by an elderly patient, who was arrested soon afterwards and questioned by National Police for several hours. The 71-year-old man was detained by the police after a call had been made to them by a security guard, reporting an emergency situation arising at the hospital. According to sources, the Santa Cruz man, who was already an in-patient, approached the nurse in his ward, just before 2.30pm. He asked her to remove a catheter the doctor treating him had previously prescribed. But when she told him she could not over-ride the doctor’s decision, the patient replied: “I have a knife in my bag and I’m going to use it.” That frightened the nurse, especially as she was cornered between the

patient’s bed and the wall. Witnesses said she dashed off immediately, towards the security guard, near the emergency department, and told him what had happened. The guard approached the elderly patient, asked if he had a knife in his belongings, and he handed it over promptly. The guard then called the police. There was drama in that area last month when the hospital’s emergency centre was torched by a nervous, disgruntled out-patient. She was fed-up with being led what she considered to be a merry dance by specialists, also on a Sunday. The woman admitted she was “tired of waiting” and opened an oxygen bottle valve and applied her lighter flame to it to gain attention. The blaze caused chaos and a mass evacuation, but, happily, there were no casualties.

month deadline has been set. Ofelia Manjon, Tenerife’s head of island roads and landscapes, has stressed that the work is mainly to reinforce the road surface, and the plan is to recycle the tarmac already in place. Road-safety has also been an issue on this road, with rainwater not being drained properly, which is why the drainage system will be reinforced, and ditches will be made deeper to collect

rainwater after heavy storms. Manjon also said the road would be much safer after the maintenance, especially as some 20,000 cars use this road daily. Granadilla Council is also preparing projects on areas in the municipality, particularly on the TF-555, TF-21 and the TF-28. In addition to the road maintenance, there are also projects for landscaping and improving these areas.

NEWS IN BRIEF Mass brawl sparked by Mystery over flight delays

car backing into coach

TWO flights were delayed on Monday afternoon at Tenerife’s north airport, because controllers from the tower reported seeing a person on the runway. The flights were lining up to take off when the pilots received an emergency call from the air-traffic control tower, telling them to stay put. Guardia Civil officers, who work at the airport, carried out a thorough search of the runway and the surrounding area, but they saw no one!

El Corte Ingles chief goes

DIRECTORS at the El Corte Ingles department store chain have reached an agreement with their shareholders, over the departure of president Dimas Gimeno. He accepted an agreement, drawn up by the company’s bosses last Saturday, and resigned, shortly before being formally dismissed on Sunday. It followed a stand-off lasting several months. The former president agreed to sever ties with El Corte Ingles, in exchange for the firm paying him the equivalent of two years’ salary, as part of a compensation package. The agreement follows a week of talks in which Gimeno tried to secure a bigger pay-out over his dismissal, which was agreed by company bosses last June.

A BRUTAL fight, which broke out in the popular, tourist area of Gran Canaria’s Puerto Rico last Sunday, was recorded by several witnesses.

According to sources, a black car was being reversed out of its spot in the public car park, when the driver backed into a coach, accidentally. The situation appeared to escalate when two young men got out of the car and spoke to the coach driver, seemingly to complete the accident forms. Suddenly, an argument began, with two women

from the car, probably girlfriends or wives, joining in. Both vehicles caused traffic inside the car park to come to a halt, and the black car’s two men threw a few punches at the body of the coach. This, in turn, caused the coach driver, along with a helpful passenger, to alight. Suddenly, the coach driver began to push the young men, and, according to witnesses, the fight broke out. Numerous people tried to break up the brawl, but they, too, were drawn into the fracas. On a recording, a woman, pleading for someone to intervene, is shouting: “Stop that man, stop that man!”

Suddenly the coach driver and one of the young men fell on to a barrier, but, undeterred, they continued kicking and punching each other until they were left scrambling around on the floor. One of the girls from the black car was also involved in the brawl, kicking the coach driver as well as the passenger, who was backing him. The police finally arrived and managed to stop the fight, in which several people had become involved. From the recordings, the cops were able to see that the coach passenger had left one of the young men unconscious, on the floor. Both drivers have been charged on various counts.

Child lived alongside corpse of her pet dog AUTHORITIES in Spain have taken a child into care after being told that she had been forced to live with the corpse of her dog for three months. The animal was said by the girl to have been suffocated by her mum and dad in

the Valladolid area of Santovenia de Pisuerga, and neighbours alerted the Guardia Civil police, once they were aware of the situation. When Guardia officers entered the property, they found the dog’s

body on the kitchen floor. The Guardia’s animal protection branch, Seprona, has now taken over the investigation and will hold an autopsy to discover how the animal died. While investigations continue, the child has been put into care.

EIGHT in 10 respondents across the European Union say they want to scrap the twiceyearly hour changes, with 93% of Spain’s ministers in favour.

Foreign Affairs Minister Josep Borrell has speculated that this could mean Spain being “in a different time zone, more in keeping with its geographical location”. But he agrees that nothing is set in stone. In fact, the EU-28 is not able to agree a common policy for the bloc, since daylight-saving measures are within the jurisdiction of national governments. “I’m sure the people in Lapland won’t have the same views as those in Portugal, for example,” said Borrell. “But I’m not an expert in the subject.” European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker proposes ending clock changes altogether, although it is not yet clear whether this would lead to EU nations being permanently on what is now “winter” or “summer” time. It seems more likely that Europe will stay in its respective “summer” time slots, given that over one million respondents said

they wanted to keep it that way. This amounts to nearly 25% of the 4.6 million people who replied to the survey, which included spaces for qualitative information and personal views. Although the survey is not binding, the Commission says the results are so overwhelmingly-biased in one direction that they “cannot ignore it”. Already, European Parliament referred in February to scientific studies, which

showed that changing the clocks could have negative effects on health. The UK has already discussed the possibility of eliminating the October clock change, and staying on British Summer Time (BST) all year, given that it gets dark in England and Wales between 3.30-4pm in midwinter. But the debate fell apart because children in Scotland, which has fewer daylight hours than the southern part of the UK in

Six cars battered as cops snatch thieves

TWO men were arrested on Tuesday afternoon following a spectacular police chase in Arrecife, in which no fewer than six vehicles were damaged. Both men, aged 35 and 44, were located by National Police as they drove around the Lanzarote capital in a car, stolen just a few hours earlier. Once they realised that the cops were on their tail, they tried to flee, which is when officers began the chase. It ended when the stolen car collided with other vehicles

and then overturned. The crash happened in Calle Triana, situated in a built-up area of the city. Both men freed themselves from the vehicle by climbing out of the windows. They then tried to run away from the officers, who had to use their weapons to detain both men. The pair have numerous police records, and one was arrested only a week before, for committing a house robbery, The men, who were detained by the police, have been charged with stealing the vehicle, as well as crimes against public safety.

winter, would be walking to school in the dark. MEPs, responding to a petition from Finland, which mentioned health issues, and that changing the clocks nowadays does not contribute towards saving energy, cast a nonbinding vote, earlier this year. A total of 384 were in favour of keeping the same time all year, while 153 wanted to continue with the twiceyearly changes, with 12 abstentions.

Spain was a major participant in the survey, and Britain was one of the lowest, with Germany having the highest participation overall. In a country which, on Central European Summer Time (CEST), enjoys daylight seven months of the year, up to nearly 11pm, but is in the dark before 5pm in winter, Germany’s high participation was to be expected. Europe currently has three time-zones, not all of which correspond with their countries’ geographical locations, with Spain and Portugal on two time-zones. Despite the Meridian Line running through mainland Spain’s eastern-most point and much of France, plus all of Belgium and The Netherlands being to the west of it, these countries are on Central European Time (CET) and CEST in summer. However, the Canary Islands and Portugal are on GMT, or BST.

There was superb feedback from all the guests who experienced the planetarium. Thanks to Aleksandra, Charles and their staff from the Astronomy and Science Centre, based on the side of Mount Teide, for bringing this fabulous experience to our island. Many of the visitors will, no doubt, want to experience the company’s evening trips to the Teide observatory for an evencloser view of the universe, including planets, stars and galaxies. Just to let you know how vast are the skies, it would take a modern jet fighter, travelling at the speed of light (300,000km per second) one million years to reach the nearest star to the sun! A big thank-you to Gaynor for organising the event and supporting the Helping Hands in Tenerife Children’s Charity. The grand total from the raffle, auction and ticket sales added up to a whopping 1,500 euros. Thanks to everyone who donated prizes to Helping Hands for the raffle and auction, and, as ever, the charity is always grateful to its team of helpers, Janet, Anne and Steph. Hats off to Derrick Lynes, who compered the event, and a special thank-you to DJ Terry on the decks. The Gran Sur finale was perfect, with performances from Maureen Sands’ Estrellas Theatre and Performing Arts School, who really were exceptional. And thanks, also, from Helping Hands leader Liz Montague, to everyone who supported this unique event. The Astronomy & Science Centre is in the process of producing an astronomy book, especially for the children of Centro Guaidyl, who will almost certainly love it!

Cops save harassed boy from taking his own life Double trouble for speedy lad

NATIONAL Police officers have almost certainly prevented the suicide of a child, who was being sexually-harassed through the internet. An international operation between Spanish officers, US Homeland Security Investigation (HSI) and Guatemalan police led to the arrest of two people, who had cyber-stalked dozens of young people around the world. The disgusting pair contacted the children, via the internet, from Guatemala and, after gaining their trust, requested pornographic material about themselves. As time went

by, the youngsters had to send more explicit images. HSI intercepted communications between a minor and a dangerous sexualharasser. in which the Catalonia victim spoke of his intention to commit suicide because of the pressure he was under. The US agents found that the alleged harasser lived in Guatemala and informed the Guatemalan authorities. Subsequently, National Police officers, specialising in cybercrime, received an urgent communication from the Prosecutor’s Office, which was investigating crimes against minors in Guatemala. The poor youngster, who was considering suicide,

lived in Spain and needed to be located urgently. A rapid investigation led to the victim’s identity being established in just a few hours. Police in his hometown launched a search, and soon found him wandering the streets, and, so, almost certainly, kept him alive. The child’s mother told officers she had noticed her son’s abnormal behaviour. But she had no idea that the problem was so serious. Guatemalan police then raided the harasser’s home, but he and an accomplice escaped. A search revealed that the duo had been bothering dozens of kids around the world. Months later, the Catalan child was again sexually-

harassed through the internet, and his family reported the incident to police. They forwarded the information to the Guatemalan police, particularly because the tormentors were the same individuals who had earlier escaped. This time, they were arrested, and have since been jailed. Spanish National Police are now teaching the Cyberexpert programme in schools, aiming to train children in the safe use of social networks. The programme is also intended to raise their awareness of the risks they could face, during their daily use of new technologies and the internet. For more information, visit www.ciberexperto.org

LOCAL Police in Santa Cruz, using a radar system, detected a 20-year-old exceeding the speed limit by more than double. The young speedster was caught driving his Mini Cooper at 118kph on the TF28, specifically on Calle La Batata, in the Fasnia municipality, where 50kph is the speed limit. The wreckless driver was heading towards the town of El Tablero on Tuesday afternoon, when he was nailed by the cops, who have charged him with crimes against road safety.

Cultural park’s

THE Canarian Government has agreed to spend 10m euros, over a three-year period, on the renovation of the Viera y Clavijo Park in Santa Cruz. Plans are going ahead to improve security and the facilities, as well as updating the services of this cultural and leisure centre. The project will also offer opportunities for training courses and workshops, in addition to renovating the abandoned Perez Minik Theatre.

Barcelona star didn’t have valid car licence B A R C E L O N A centre-back Gerard Pique, once with Manchester United, could face up to six months in jail after being caught driving without a valid licence. According to reports from radio station Cadena Ser, he was pulled over last Friday by the police for a routine check, and asked to show his documents. Officers saw that he had zero points left on his licence, which meant he should not have been driving. In Spain, drivers start

with 12 points and can then lose them for various offences. Once they have lost all their points, they can’t drive until points are reinstated, normally after a ban and a written test, following a road-safety training session. Taking to the roads before having points reinstated is punishable by up to six months in prison, or a 6,000-euro fine. This is not the first time he has been in trouble with the police. Last year, Pique was fined for speeding, and in 2014 he had to cough up 10,500 euros after arguing with a traffic officer. His brother was fined for a road infringement in the same incident.

Tram crash halts traffic

News

11 CW

The height of courage THREE Canarians put their courage to the test last Saturday afternoon with a perilous feat, walking on a nylon “high-line” across Gran Canaria’s Barranco Moya, from one mountain to another.

TRAFFIC came to a halt on Wednesday afternoon after a tram collided with a car in the La Laguna area of La Cuesta. The accident happened just before 5.30pm, on the tramline from Santa Cruz to La Laguna. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but considerable damage was caused to both vehicles, as well as several tram signals in the vicinity. Local police attended the scene, and an ambulance was also sent, as well as a pick-up truck, to remove the car from the tram-lines.

They are competing in a new, nerve-racking sport called high-lining, and Kevin Vega, from Gran Canaria, along with La Palma’s Ruben Perez and a Catalan, Alejandro Gimeno, all took part. They start 200m from the ground, and face a 300m walk, from one side of the ravine to the other. This sport consists of brave, daredevil people, crossing barrancas by balancing themselves on a nylon line, just 2½cm wide, at fearful

heights. And though the balancing act looks extremely dangerous, the athletes practising this sport are adamant there is no risk! In fact, the valley is becoming recognisable across Spain for holding high-line records. The three athletes completed the 300m walk, with Vega beating his own personal record in just 17 minutes. Perez took 25 minutes and Gimeno a rapid 15 minutes.

Car thieves ‘gas’ couple

A BRITISH expat couple were left baffled by their carinsurance company, after their vehicle was stolen by a gang from outside their house, before being torched. John and Jacqueline Armitage, 72 and 70, had no idea the car had gone, during the night, because, Guardia Civil officers believe, they had been gassed by brazen thieves. But their Gibraltar-based insurance company is refusing to pay out without the original documents, which were destroyed in the fire. The retired couple, from Portsmouth, were awoken by Guardia Civil agents banging on their door, the morning after their Toyota

was found torched, having been involved in various robberies. “We had no idea it had been stolen,” said John. “I’m a light sleeper and our dog barks at the slightest noise, so the officers are 100% sure we were gassed.” The couple, who moved to Mollina, near the Malaga area of Antequera, 11 years ago, bought the car in the UK, and had it transferred to Spanish plates. Insurance company Tradewise told online newspaper Olive Press: “It would be inappropriate for us to comment on individual cases. “However Ley 50/1980, de 8 octubre, Contrato de Seguro, the law applicable to insurance contracts in Spain, allows the insurer 40 days from when the claim is reported, to complete their internal investigations.”

Girl is forced to wed older man

A WOMAN, aged 31, was arrested after her teenage daughter told officers at Estepona police station that she had been forced to wed a man 12 years older than her, in the Moroccan town of Kenitra.

A police source said the Moroccan mum would have reached an “economic agreement with the 28year-old man” and, perhaps, even bribed a local authority to okay the marriage. Once back in Spain, it is claimed that the girl refused to return to Morocco to take part in celebrations, and was, consequently, threatened

to be taken there, and left without a passport or other identification. Officers, who visited the home of the 16-year-old student, arrested her mother, who was released on bail after being charged with crimes of coercion, and against family rights and duties. Ouch, that smarts! Stingray hooks on to man’s privates

A MAN was left writhing in agony after his private parts were attacked by a stingray while he was swimming in the sea. He was rolling around on the sand in pain after the animal’s barb hooked on to his genitals. And when he crawled back on to the beach in Sanya, in China’s Hainan province, the stingray was still attached. The tourist was visiting

the area and enjoying the tropical weather last Saturday, when the freak incident happened. A video of the unfortunate swimmer shows him lying on the beach, before the emergency services rush to help him. However, they didn’t have the appropriate tools to hand, so they had to improvise to fully remove and unhook the spiny tail from within! Onlookers crowded around him to watch events unfold, and some bystanders had their

smartphones out to film or take pictures of the unfortunate incident. In the end, the emergency services managed to release the tail. Although he was clearly in pain, the man was able to stand immediately afterwards, and the paramedics took him to hospital for a checkup. Witnesses claim the stingray died on the beach. A video of the poor man’s plight has since gone viral, racking up over five million views.

Phoney reviews offer restaurants a big lift COMPANIES in Andalucia, bidding to increase their popularity with more customers, are paying to post dozens of phoney, five-star reviews on TripAdvisor and other global websites. An investigation, by online newspaper Olive Press, has unearthed companies offering packages of 50 glowing reviews for just 400 euros, considered to be a “form of fraud”. Restaurants, hotels and garages have utilised the services of Malaga-based company GCI Marketing, which promises “genuine reviews, tailored to your business”. One of its clients, a Malaga restaurateur, managed to get to No.1 in his town on TripAdvisor after “purchasing” dozens of “excellent” reviews in a twomonth period. In total, 99% of the comments for his restaurant were “excellent”, with just one “very good”. Ben Fisher, who runs GCI, said: “The restaurant was over 100 in the list, but look at it now. It doesn’t matter if the reviewers eat there or not, although we can actually send someone if you want to pay a bit more.” “In fact, if you pay extra, we can send four people to share one pizza, and we spread the reviews out over a few days. I have dozens of clients.” The probe was launched after Olive Press heard from an angry reader, who had been targeted by an unsolicited GCI email last month. The advert read: “We offer packages of tailor-made, professional review packages, giving your business a boost,

and the edge over your competitors… also, making your business look more attractive.” Posing as potential clients with a holiday-rental business in Marbella, the paper’s reporters were told by Fisher that the reviews would be “from real people”. Fisher, from Hull, said: “The reviews are from real people on the Costa del Sol. It’s not a bunch of fake accounts, so don’t worry, they are all verified users.” He added: “A potential customer doesn’t know if it is real or fake, and it’s not illegal. You can’t get prosecuted for this… it’s just cheating.” Describing himself as a “web-marketing specialist”, he said that if the reporters bought 50 reviews, our “new business” would receive two five-star reviews per day from his network of users, comprising “friends and family friends”. He offered to do 20 reviews for 150 euros, or 50 reviews for 400 euros, with payments in cash or via PayPal. So confident was he that it would boost the so-called “business” ranking that he offered a 100% satisfaction or a “moneyback guarantee”. “You’re paying for direct marketing,” he said. “The higher you go on TripAdvisor, the more you pop up as recommended, and the more business you get.” But this fraudulent practice is not new. TripAdvisor has been caught out before, including a famous stunt in which an undercover reporter set up a fake restaurant, The Shed at Dulwich, and transformed it into London’s No.1 restaurant.

Spain records 251 deaths from drowning this year

NO fewer than 65 drownings were recorded in Spain last month, and 251 in the year so far. The last fatality, a man, was pulled from the sea off Velez-Malaga last Friday (31st Aug). But it is not known whether he had been a swimmer, a bather or a diver, or if he had fallen overboard from a ship. But Maritime Rescue (Salvamento Maritimo) says the corpse, found at 6.50pm, some 600 metres from the shore, could have been in the sea for several days. According to the National Drowning Report (INA), first published in 2015, drownings in August fell from 70 in 2015 to 60 in 2016, The INA says that since 1st January this year, 251 people have died in Spain from

drowning. Yet that figure was 126 fewer than in the same period last year, when 377 people (33.4% less) died. Andalucia is the Autonomous Community with the most deaths (36, 14.3%) of the total, ahead of Galicia (34 deaths, 13.5%), the Canary Islands (32, 12.7%), Catalonia (31, 12.4%) the Valencian Community (25, 10%) and the Balearics (22, 8.8%). La Rioja and the Autonomous City of Ceuta (1.4% each) had fewest, while Melilla remains the only territory where no drownings were reported. Of those who drowned, 42.2% were in the over-65 bracket, and 77.3% older than 35. In total, 82% of drownings happened where there was no surveillance or lifeguard service.

Guardia experts blast mine’s old explosives Missing Marie found A BRITISH wom-

an, who went missing for nearly seven weeks on the Costa del Sol, has been found safe, after losing all her belongings to a thief.

GUARDIA CIVIL officers were forced to call in their bomb experts for a controlled blast, after finding 63kg of explosives in an abandoned mineshaft in the Laujar de Andrax area of Almeria.

The Guardia went to the mine, in the La Tolva area of the Sierra de Gador, after a local found the dynamite,

some 300m inside the shaft. The explosives, along with 288 detonators, were made in Spain and designed for industrial use. Officers found the shaft difficult to enter because it was flooded, with the entrance closed off. But they were able to access it through a small opening in the side of the mountain. Guardia’s experts, who found the haul of explosives inside, said initial tests showed it was around 30 years old and in extremely

poor condition. The area was cordoned off, while police prepared to destroy the find in a contained blast. The dynamite was detonated inside the mineshaft, leaving the structure completely sealed. The Guardia Civil have since issued a statement, containing guidelines for the public, if they should make similar discoveries. Police said people should take care not to touch or tamper with explosive material, and they should

also stop others from doing so. Caution has been advised, especially if the explosives appear aged, weathered or rusty. The area where explosives are found should be marked carefully, with stones or branches. Care should be also taken not to touch any explosive materials with the markings. People should refuse any request to help collect or move such material, and authorities should be alerted as soon as possible.

Knifemen, and a woman, terrified so many victims

TWO knife-wielding brothers and a woman, accused of 14 violent robberies during their reign of terror, have been arrested, after causing what police considered to be “great social alarm”. The trio embarked on a crime spree, which left many of its victims terrified because of the levels of violence and intimidation used. They are said to have spread themselves across Mojacar, and as far afield as the Vega Baja, Murcia City and Molina de Segura, in pursuit of their criminal activities. Police say that not only did they carry knives to

intimidate their victims, but they did not hesitate to attack innocent members of the public. Their sole purpose was to get what they wanted; namely money, mobile phones and the public’s vehicles. The investigation began

in mid-July, after police received a number of complaints. The first was from an international transport company, which had diesel worth 12,000 euros stolen. Police allege that the trio then embarked on a jour-

ney of violent and intimidating robberies, throughout the province and surrounding regions. They are alleged to have stolen three cars, to enable them to move swiftly away from the crime scenes, and to find new victims. In one case, a person was ordered to kneel down after being knifed in the neck, while other victims were dragged violently by the aggressors and thrown to the ground, simply to enable the gang to steal their vehicles. With the help of witnesses, police were able to identify the three suspects. The two men, aged 27 and 39, were tracked down to their mother’s house in Los Conejos de Molina de Segura residential development. Police are continuing their investigations.

Her family discovered that Marie McManus, 42, from Manchester, who had not been heard from since 15th July, was found “sleeping rough” in Marbella last Friday. Her brother, 35-year-old Declan McManus, 35, said she had disappeared after someone had stolen her cash, cards, mobile and passport. “She has no idea who robbed her, but she’s hoping for the best now,” he added. “I believe she had a couple of nights in hostels but the most part was spent sleeping on the street.” Declan said his sister, who had worked in the hospitality sector, is now looking for a job on the Costa del Sol. “We set her up in a hostel for a couple of weeks, and gave her money and a phone to keep in touch. She’s looking for anything really, probably bar work.” Relatives flew to Malaga last Thursday night to look for Marie around Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmadena, among other areas. Marie had last been seen at a Torremolinas hotel on 8th July. But her worried family had heard nothing since a phone conversation with her mother on 15th July, which prompted them to issue an appeal to find her. Declan shared the happy news on Facebook on Friday and wrote: “FOUND HER!!! Absolutely overcome with happiness and emotion with all the well-wishes from every one of my family, friends and the share’ees! Words cannot say how we feel! Thank you all so, so much.”

New migrants cheered as they land on beach

ANOTHER boat full of migrants, young and mainly male, landed on a beach in the south of Spain, shortly after a similar incident.

It was almost an action-replay of the landing at Barrosa beach, in Chiclana, when around 50 people, having landed, were seen scurrying up rocks to avoid detection by the authorities. On this occasion, a video circulating on social media shows dozens of young men and children jumping

from the boat and running up the beach, to the cheers of sunbathers. The footage shows the boat approaching the Fontanilla beach, near Conil de la Frontera in the province of Cadiz, Andalucia. One Twitter user described how the boat appeared to lose engine power, and swift action from the beach-goers prevented it being smashed against the rocks It is reported that police detained all the people from the boat, including 13 children. Spain has vowed to return all the recovered migrants to the countries from where they originated.

A LORRY driver who stopped to ask police for directions was busted, but only after officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana on him! Provincial police in Navarra, Spain, say the driver stopped his vehicle

shortly before 9am, and got out of the cab to ask a police patrol for directions in Murieta. The officers noticed a strong smell of marijuana, which aroused their suspicions. When they checked the cab of the lorry they found a joint, still lit, and hashish. The driver tested positive for drugs, and the lorry was impounded.

Courts clash over late mortgage repayments By mariano zunino siri

Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association

THE lack of legal criteria, establishing when the clauses on late-payment interest in mortgage loans are abusive, has led the Spanish First and High Courts to apply different decisions. Consequently, it has led to legal uncertainty, and an arbitrary difference of treatment for consumers. To end this disparity, and also end the differences in determining the consequences of the abusive nature of the clauses, the Supreme Court referred the question to the European Court. It ruled by judgement of 7th August 2018, and many High Courts, among them, Tenerife’s High Court, decided to suspend their

final decisions until its pronouncement. Now, the situation has ended. Determining the abusive clause of delayed interest In the cases raised, the abusive nature of the following clauses, relating to interest on late loancontracts, were questioned: *Variable, annual interest rate of 4.75%, and default interest of 25% per annum *Ordinary interests between 8.50% and 11.20% and interests on delayed payment between 18.50% and 23.70%. The Supreme Court ruled that, under article

85 of the Consumers and Users Defence Law, the clauses imposing a disproportionately-high compensation to the consumer, which does not comply with their obligations, are abusive. Also, the non-negotiated clauses of the loan agreements, relating to interest for delayed payment, should be declared abusive when such clauses fix an interest of delay, higher than two points on the ordinary interest agreed between the parties to the contract. Consequences of the abusive nature of the clauses

The Supreme Court considered that, once the abusive nature of the delayed-payment interest clause is declared, the ordinary interest will continue to be applied, which fulfils its function of repaying the refunds. And the European court supports this position. So, once the clause that includes the delayedinterest payment rate is declared abusive, those interests are not applicable. That means, in many cases, a substantial sum does not have to be paid. The European Court has

also decided this matter. Two consumers signed two loan agreements with Banco Santander, with different interest rates, both ordinary and those of delay. The contract did not contemplate the possibility of ceding the credit, but Banco Santander transferred this credit to a third party (during the foreclosing proceeding). The claimants object the cession, and The Court 38 of Barcelona sat in the case and sent it to the ECJ. The ECJ stated that giving up or buying credits without the consumer being able to wipe out the debt by paying the assignee the price of the assignment, plus interest, costs and expenses, is not against European law. This means it is valid because this type of practice is not included within the European Directive. Mariano Zunino Siri is a lawyer, registered at the Tenerife Bar Association since 1991. Sarah, 60, puts paid to ‘scumbag’ thieves

A COURAGEOUS female estate agent, who physically turfed out a pair of “scumbag robbers” from her shop in Spain, is warning others to be on their guard. Sarah Hayes, of Huntley Properties, in Mijas, on the Costa del Sol, said she was forced to fight and wrestle with the “brazen” pair physically, before they fled, empty-handed. And she has now launched her own campaign to track them down. Sending a caution to others, the 60-year-old said: “They were looking for anything they could sell on, such as laptops and phones, or handbags and cash. “They are definitely career robbers, and have, apparently, been into some

eight companies around La Cala. They work as a team, and everybody needs to be careful.” The incident unfolded last week when a man, thought to be Romanian, walked into her shop in Jardin Botanico, at 12.20pm, followed shortly by a woman, believed to be of the same nationality.

“He was asking about launderettes and car hire, and I knew there was something dodgy going on because he had been before,” said Sarah. Minutes later, the man made his way towards a kitchen at the back of the agency. “I asked where he was going and he just carried on,” she said. “So

I literally grabbed the back of his waistband, pulled him back and was grappling with him. I then kicked him in the back of his knees so that he lost his balance.” She then realised that his female partner had taken a purse out of her bag. “I ran at her, grabbed my purse and started pushing her towards the door,” added Sarah, who screamed continually as she forced them to leave. Zoe Hayes, friend and fellow businesswoman, from next-door’s Security of Spain, heard shouting and ran to help. Sarah said: “Luckily I wasn’t hurt, and I’m sure they are hurting more. It was a bit scary, but my adrenaline was pumping, and it could have been a lot worse.” She has since shared photos of the suspects and issued a caution to others on her Facebook page,

which has already been shared 360 times. In one comment, a woman said she thought they were “trying to steal charity boxes” from a local sandwich shop three months ago, adding: “They were in our office as well, and were chased off. Nothing is sacred.” Sarah believes they have been operating in the area for a while. “I have seen him in Jardin Botanico, and I believe they are local robbers by career,” she said. “I’m sure they do this for a living. “Please, everybody, be vigilant at home or at work. These thieves watch us and spring when we are not expecting it. They’re scumbag robbers!” The pictures captured on camera have been forwarded to the police, who are investigating. They identified their car, a silver Volkswagon, but not the suspects themselves.

Friday 7th September, BBC1, 21.00 Michael Scott explores deep underground and uses the latest laser-scanning technology and virtual reality to reveal the historical secrets of Cairo and Ancient Egypt. The Invisible Cities scanning team helps us to see the city as no human eye ever could, peeling back the layers of history and showing how the region has reinvented itself over thousands of years. With many of the region’s most extraordinary places concealed, out of sight or underground, Michael gets himself into some tight corners. He explores deep inside and beneath the first pyramid ever built at Saqqara, and finds out how it helped to inspire the Great Pyramid of Giza. With special access to robbers’ tunnels and hidden chambers normally closed to the public, he uses spectacular laser scans to help understand how the pyramids were built. He also shows how the Great Pyramid was designed and constructed with astonishing accuracy. Michael then uses cuttingedge scanning equipment to investigate the Sphinx and to determine which pharaoh is represented in the face of the legendary monument. But the history of Cairo isn’t only about the Ancient Egyptians. Michael discovers an impressive Roman fortified harbour hidden beneath a Greek Orthodox church. Using rope and harness, he also descends a 90-metre well, carved into bedrock beneath an Arabic fortress. Commissioned by Saladin in the 12th century AD, this remarkable structure was built by Christian prisoners of war during the crusades. Founded by Ancient Egyptians, occupied by Rome and finally absorbed into the Arab world, Michael learns that Cairo is now the largest city in Africa. Its significance was celebrated in the Arabian Nights: “He who has not seen Cairo has not seen the world. For Cairo is the world.”

Fake or Fortune?

Sunday 9th September, BBC1, 20.00

Twentieth century sculptures are a hot property in the art market, with Giacometti’s ‘Pointing Man’ figure selling for $141m at auction in New York in 2015, making it the most expensive sculpture ever sold. Could a stark white square of plaster that has been passed down through an English family with art world connections be one of Giacometti’s earliest and most daring works? The quest to discover the history of the sculpture, known as ‘The Gazing Head’, leads the team to the bohemian world of 1930s Paris, where artists and intellectuals rubbed shoulders in cafes and studios. Can the team find any proof that the owner’s grandmother acquired the sculpture from Giacometti during the time she spent studying and modeling in the city? If it’s genuine, the sculpture could be worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, but there’s a problem - it was once knocked over by a cat and broken into several pieces. The team are hoping that a high-tech CT scan might reveal more about the damage it has sustained during its life and even yield clues about its origins. The trouble is, proving the authenticity of sculptures is notoriously difficult as works are often produced in multiple editions and can be easy to replicate. As the investigation unfolds, the team travels to Germany to find out how police broke up a forgery ring that churned out thousands of fake Giacometti pieces. The final decision lies with the Giacometti Committee in Paris - and they only approve a handful of the scores of newly discovered pieces they examine every year.

Princess Margaret: The Rebel Royal Tuesday 11th September, BBC2, 21.00

This compelling two-part documentary profiles Princess Margaret, whose life and loves reflected the social and sexual revolution that transformed Britain during the 20th Century. With sumptuous archive and a series of revealing interviews, the series follows Margaret’s life as she redefined our image of the modern princess. This deeply personal account reveals how Princess Margaret’s character combined the rebellious force of modernity and respect for tradition. In this she embodied the spirit of cultural change in the second half of the 20th Century. Episode one begins in 1930 with the birth of Margaret Rose Windsor, a princess of the largest Empire the world had ever seen. The abdication of her uncle propelled the princess to being second in line to the throne. Margaret’s life would be shaped by dramatic social change as Britain entered a more egalitarian era after the Second World War. The sister of the future Queen needed a role in this new world; it involved everything from opening council housing estates and visiting schools to opening flower shows. Privately Margaret preferred fashion, theatre and house parties. Aged 16, Margaret fell in love with Peter Townsend, a married man. Clergy and politicians were against the relationship but the public voiced support for Margaret’s right to marry the man of her choice. In 1955, Margaret decided not to marry Townsend; she said she’d chosen duty. But in 1960, the royal rebel married bohemian photographer and ‘commoner’ Antony Armstrong-Jones. Margaret was drawn into a circle of artists, writers and celebrities riding the wave of the swinging sixties. As royal mystique gave way to the age of celebrity, journalists and photographers felt free to drop their deferential attitude to the royal family. When things began to go wrong in Margaret’s marriage, it would be subject to the glare of public scrutiny.

Gabby Logan presents live coverage of the 2018 Great North Run, the world’s biggest half-marathon. Global superstars of distance running and wheelchair racing go head to head, including four-time Olympic champion Sir Mo Farah, who defends his 2017 title, and also has an unprecedented fifth consecutive victory in his sights. In the women’s competition, 2016 champion Vivian Cheruiyot heads the pack. And in the wheelchair race, legend David Weir is favourite to add another winner’s medal to his impressive collection. But it’s not just the world’s elite taking to the streets. Around 57,000 entries have signed up to raise money and awareness for many good causes, some of which we’ll hear about in the programme. Commentary comes from Steve Cram, Andrew Cotter & Paula Radcliffe with live updates out on the course from JJ Chalmers, Radzi Chinyanganya and Jeanette Kwakye.

Black Earth Rising BBC2, 21.00

Black Earth Rising is a brand new international thriller about the prosecution of international war crimes and the West’s relationship with contemporary Africa written, directed and produced by Bafta-winner Hugo Blick (The Honourable Woman, The Shadow Line). As a child, Kate Ashby (Michaela Coel) was rescued from the horrific aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. She was adopted and brought up in Britain by Eve Ashby (Harriet Walter), a world-class international human rights lawyer. Kate, who has long struggled to escape the shadow of her past, is now returning to work as a legal investigator in the same chambers as Eve, under leading international lawyer Michael Ennis (John Goodman). But Kate and Eve’s relationship is strained to breaking point when Eve takes on the prosecution of a controversial militia leader at the International Criminal Court. The accused man, who once fought to stop the genocide in the Democratic Republic of Congo, now stands accused of committing crimes against humanity.

The garden make-over team are in bustling Hackney, East London this week as Alan Titchmarsh surprises the Cariazo family. Nurses Jeroume and Onessa are the utterly devoted parents of nine year old Elijah. The wheelchair-bound only child suffers from Myotubular Myopathy, a rare genetic condition that weakens the muscles to such a degree that even breathing and swallowing are a constant challenge. Alan discovers how Onessa and Jeroume see every day that they share with their severely disabled son as a miracle and that despite his challenges, Elijah has the the playful curiosity of any typical nine year old. Because he requires so much technology and equipment to travel, taking Elijah anywhere far is a real challenge - so Alan and his team of gardening experts, Katie Rushworth, Frances Tophill and David Domoney decide to give the family a world tour on their doorstep. Longing to give Elijah the sensory stimulation he craves, they transform the family’s uneven overgrown urban courtyard into an accessible paradise complete with tropical water-feature, a sensory beach and Asianstyle dining zone complete with a breathtaking mural. The family are blown away in one of the most moving reveals ever.

Paul O’Grady’s Little Heroes ITV1, 20.00

In the final episode of the series, Paul meets nine-year-old Ocean who was in perfect health until she woke up one morning with a headache and a mysterious swelling on her forehead. Following tests, Ocean was diagnosed with Pott’s Puffy Tumour, a very rare life-threatening bone infection. Ocean bravely says, “I wasn’t scared or worried, I was just wondering what it was.” Paul also meets four-year-old Rosey who is back at Great Ormond Street for her 17th operation to help her with her Vacterl Syndrome, which occurs in fewer than 1 in 10,000 newborns. She has spent the last four years of her life in and out of hospital. Rosey’s dad, Paul, explains: “With every operation our lives get a little bit better, her life gets a little bit better.” Also this week, Paul meets with the parents of 14-month-old Amelie, who was born with Laryngeal Cleft, and has spent the last year of her life permanently living at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

A SEASIDE village in Brittany has banned swimmers from its beach, because an over-sexed dolphin has been scaring tourists and locals there… by trying to rub up against them! It has been hanging around the Bay of Brest for months, swimming near the beaches of Plougastel-Daoulas and Logonna-Daoulas. Now, as it enters the mating season, the animal, nicknamed Zafar, has moved further down the coast to Landévennec, a small village with 300 inhabitants, and, until now, famous for its abbey. Here, he has been butting up alongside boats and chasing swimmers. Mayor Roger Lars said: “I issued the decree to ensure safety, because several bathers were really afraid. He even lifted up a woman bather with his snout.” The three-metre dolphin had, initially, delighted locals in Brest Harbour, swimming alongside watersports enthusiasts. But the mayor’s decision to ban swimming has been welcomed by experts at marine wildlife centre Océanopolis, who have warned bathers: “Never get too close to a marine

mammal at full, sexual maturity.” Zafar likes to frolic around tourist boats, and he even lets swimmers grip on to his dorsal fin and go for a ride with him. But, recently,

he has become a little too friendly. Locals have told of the sexed-up mammal’s antics, with several going into some detail about shocked tourists being confronted

with the aroused animal. Experts say dolphins appear to have frequent, recreational sex, and, sometimes, they display sexual behaviour towards other species, including

humans. They point out that they are extremelylarge wild animals, who could cause serious injury, even, inadvertently, with a flipper, if they feel in any way threatened. But attacks or injury to humans by dolphins are so rare that a Breton lawyer plans to take legal action to have, what he calls, the “excessive” swimming ban, overturned. “The mayor wants to make dolphins look like almost ferocious beasts, completely unpredictable and likely to drown people,” said Erwan Le Cornec. “If you were to apply these rules across the board, whenever a pedestrian approaches a dog, even if it is on a leash, all the mayors in France should issue bylaws, banning pedestrians in town.”

Pub arsonist captured in Spain, after decade A BRITISH arsonist, who escaped to Marbella for 10 years, has been jailed at last, after taking a £2,500 bribe from an unknown source to torch a local pub. Richard Bowman, 38, crashed his car into the Granary Pub in Titchfield, Hampshire, and razed the building, just weeks after it had been featured on Gordon Ramsay’s TV show, Kitchen Nightmares. One of the owners avoided almost-certain death after deciding to look after the couple’s sick child, rather than stay above the pub that night. Bowman, of no fixed address, admitted arson at Portsmouth Crown Court earlier this year, and was sent to prison for five years. But a decade earlier, while Nigel and Sally-Ann Nieddu saw their business empire crumble because they were wrongly accused

of being behind the fire, Bowman was ensconced in Marbella. A forensic investigation of the blaze revealed Bowman’s DNA, which resulted in a warrant being issued for his arrest. But he continued to live the good life, until the authorities caught up with him in April, the court heard, from prosecutor Matthew Pardoe. “Police went to his address and work and spoke to his girlfriend after the fire, but he had disappeared,” said

Mr Pardoe. “He left the country in February 2008 after selling his Audi TT car, and went to Spain. But he was brought back to the UK this year and pleaded guilty to the offence.” The Granary was completely destroyed by the blaze, and, with the insurance company refusing to pay out the £800,000 needed to repair the building, it was left to the owners to foot the bill.” Mr Pardoe added: “With the couple being falsely

accused of an insurance job, it stopped them receiving any remuneration they were due.” Mrs Nieddu’s victimimpact statement, read out in court: said: “I feel very lucky to be alive as I was due to stay there, but I decided not to after my son was poorly. If we had stayed there, we would probably be dead. “Suddenly we were trying to fend off the bank, insurance company, local authorities and even travellers, who had started using the premises.” Mrs Nieddu added: “Our 26-year marriage broke

down, after we became different people.” Daniel Reilly, defending, said a remorseful Bowman was now a transformed man, who had been accepted to work as a listener for the Samaritans while in jail. A prison officer, where Bowman has been remanded, described him as “polite, courteous with excellent behaviour, who coaches other peers how to improve”. A letter from the defendant, read out in court, said: “I would like to apologise for the hurt I caused all those years ago.”

Sleep well! WHETHER you live in Tenerife, spend a lot of time here, or rent your property out, the comfort and quality of the beds in your property will dictate how comfortable you are, and how much you enjoy your stay. Holidaying and living in Tenerife are all about quality of life and relaxing, so nobody wants to go home from holiday exhausted, because they haven’t slept well!

Technological advances in the manufacture of beds bring numerous advantages. For example, those old, sprung mattresses wore down over time until you could feel the springs through the cover. And sprung mattresses on a sofa bed will inevitably start to wear along the bend, with similar problems.

Newer mattresses are either made of memory or visco-elastic foam, or a combination of foam and springs. As with many things, to a certain extent, you get what you pay for, but, generally speaking, foam mattresses are cheaper than sprung versions. They can also be transported more easily, because many of them are vacuum

packed, and only need to be left to expand for a few hours after delivery. Because they are generally made from one piece of foam, it’s also possible to have them made to specific sizes. So, if you have a bed from a certain retailer, who make up their own sizes, forcing you to buy a replacement and all the bedding from

them, you can now get a mattress elsewhere! Another problem with sprung mattresses was that if two people of unequal weight slept in a double bed, one would roll towards the middle. With foam mattresses, or combination ones, this doesn’t happen. However, a word of warning: some of the highest-quality, m e m o r y - f o a m mattresses may be ideal for the UK, but not so much for here. If your body sinks too deeply into the memory foam, it will also trap body heat, which is advantageous for a cold climate, but not for sunny Tenerife. The best, all-round solution, providing quality, support and comfort, is a sprung core, with a layer of memory foam on top, allowing your bodyweight to sink in to the mattress to a certain point, when it meets support. These are mediumpriced mattresses that suit pretty much everyone because

33 CW

they do provide lumbar support, but the foam is soft and comfortable. If you have had your mattress more than eight years, it’s probably time for a change; ask for a quote, and you might be pleasantly surprised. Bed bases come in a variety of styles, although they all perform the same function. However, since a lot of properties in Tenerife have bedrooms that are on the smaller side, beds with storage underneath are always a useful option. Some raise the mattress with an effortless hydraulic system, without interrupting the bedding, providing a huge amount of storage space for shoes, suitcases, clothes or extra bedding, or just general storage. All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo on 922 789729, who will come to your property and offer free estimates, without obligation.

Treats not sweet for our health! By Val Sainsbury YOU may love your sweet treats, but sugar is bad for you. Sweet things can easily turn you into an addict, and researchers have found that sugar has a detrimental effect on your overall health. Are you addicted to sugar? The following signs can determine your “level of addiction”. Sugar/carb cravings How often do you crave chocolate or sweets? Sugar will only make you crave for more, and excessive consumption triggers a chain reaction of sugar cravings. Fatigue and poor energy If you are often too tired to do anything, cut down your sugar intake. Sugary foods give you an instant energy boost, but it will later crash, leaving you tired throughout the day. Weight gain

You may eat a kingsize portion of your favourite dessert, but get very little protein and fibre. Sugar stimulates the production of insulin, and it's later carried to every organ in the body. Eating too much sugar makes your body release more insulin, and you may later develop resistance to this hormone. The body won’t be able to react to it, and use sugar properly. Insulin resistance leads to uncontrolled weight gain and diabetes. Colds and flu

High sugar intake affects your immunity, and you're more susceptible to colds, viruses, flu and chronic ailments. Cut down your sugar consumption,

to prevent the development of serious health problems. Loss of taste Sugar “kills” your taste buds, and increases their tolerance to

sugar. This means that you will always crave something sweeter than your favourite chocolate cake. Reduce your sugar consumption, and go step by step. In this way, you will be able to control the amount of sugar you eat, and things will be better, within a short period of time. Brain fog Brain fog is a common symptom of bloodsugar issues. Eating too much sugar causes spikes in blood-sugar levels, and experts say that this increases the risk of cognitive issues

and impairment. Skin issues and “panda” eyes Sugar increases the risk of developing issues like eczema, rosacea, acne, dry/ oily skin etc. Eat less sugar to improve your complexion. It acts as an inflammatory, and may cause plantar fasciitis. This causes pain and discomfort in the soles. Eating too much sugar can lead to adrenal fatigue, and dark circles around your eyes. If you have any of the symptoms listed, consider limiting your sugar intake.

The versatile strawberry!

THE strawberry (Fragaria) is a sweet, red, heart-shaped fruit, which is much loved for its delicious taste and nutritional benefits. Native to many parts of the world, it belongs to the rose family, and has a distinct, fragrant aroma. Despite its name, a strawberry is not a berry, botanically. Its leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, and can even be used to make an antioxidantrich tea.The amazing health benefits of antioxidantrich strawberries include improved heart health, proper brain function, relief from high blood pressure, arthritis and gout, as well

as enhanced eye-and-skin health. The polyphenolic content of strawberries makes them beneficial for improving the immune system, preventing various types of cancers, and for reducing the signs of premature ageing. Strawberries are packed with vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins C and K, folate, potassium, manganese and magnesium. They are low-calorie, fibre-rich fruits, which are abundant in anti-oxidants. Improve heart function Strawberries have high levels of heart-healthy antioxidants. A study found that

women who had three or more servings of half a cup of strawberries or blueberries each week, were 34% less likely to have a heart attack, compared with women who ate fewer berries. Boosts brain function Strawberries are rich in iodine, Vitamin C, and phytochemicals, which help maintain the proper functioning of the nervous system. Potassium, in strawberries, also has been linked to an improved cognitive function, by increasing blood flow to the brain. Strokes The anti-inflammatory

Nothing cheesy about this cost!

A RESTAURANT in Asturias has purchased a chunk of locally-produced cheese, for the mouth-watering sum of 14,300 euros at auction.

The bidding began at 1,000 euros, and the battle between 15 restaurants saw the price rocket in seconds. Cabrales, one of the most-sought-after cheese varieties, often nets impossible-sounding fortunes at auction, although this year, the eatery El Llagar de Colloto, in Oviedo, has paid four times the final figure for

an identical piece sold at in 2017. That said, the sum normally bid for a Cabrales “wheel” is less than the huge sums attracted by the highly-prized Idiazabal cheese. Last year, half a wheel of Idiazabal fetched 8,000 euros, while another, same-sized piece, auctioned in Navarra and bought by celebrity chef Leandro Gil, went for a mere 4,550 euros.

Until now, the highestever sum paid for a full Cabrales wheel was 11,000 euros, seven years ago. Culinary experts have speculated that the recent 14,300-euro mark could be a sign of a “food-market bubble”. But they also concede that the restaurants who buy these cheeses have not only recovered their investment in serving them, but always made a profit from them!

power of the antioxidants in strawberries helps reduce the formation of blood clots that are linked with strokes. Skin care For a face mask for glowing skin, crush 4-5 strawberries and mix with a tablespoon of honey. Apply to the face, leave until dry, and wash off. Strawberry moisturising lip balms also help keep lips hydrated. Anti-ageing Vitamin C in strawberries boosts collagen production, tones the skin, and has an anti-ageing effect. Using strawberry masks regularly can keep the skin fresh and clean. Eye care Eating strawberries can prevent eye conditions like dry eyes, degeneration of the optic nerves, macular degeneration, vision defects, and increased susceptibility to infections. Reduces high blood pressure Strawberries are rich in potassium and magnesium, and low in sodium. Potassium and magnesium act as vasodilators, meaning that they help reduce hypertension and the rigidity of arteries and blood vessels. This eases the flow of blood to various parts of the body, and keeps them functioning at their full potential. Boosts immunity Vitamin C present in strawberries boosts the immune system, and helps in curing the common cough and cold. A single serving has approximately 150% of your daily requirement of Vitamin C. Treats arthritis and gout

Strawberries are abundant in anti-oxidants and detoxifiers, which help reduce arthritis and gout pain. They also aid in preventing arthritic symptoms such as degeneration of muscles and tissues, drying up of the lubricating fluids in the joints, and accumulation of toxic substances and acids (such as uric acid) in the body. Birth defects Folic acid in strawberries is a necessary nutrient, especially during pregnancy, as it helps in preventing birth defects. It is also important for ensuring optimal health during pregnancy. Constipation Due to their high fibre content, strawberries help boost digestion and prevent constipation. They may also prevent diverticulitis, an inflammation of the digestive tract, which can cause fever and nausea. Treats puffy eyes Strawberries help reduce the appearance of puffy eyes. For a quick fix, place slices of the fruit on your eyelids, and relax for ten minutes. Choose the best ones * Select locally-grown strawberries, as they are safe to eat and have a sweet, wholesome flavour * When you choose strawberries, look for the ones that are red and fragrant * The imported variety is available all year round * They are highly perishable, and should be eaten in a couple of days. You can refrigerate them for a week, or freeze them for up to six months. You can also buy freeze-dried strawberries, and use them in smoothies.

Jorge to the rescue CD Tenerife 2 Deportivo 2 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife update

PUNTERS who still do the pools (remember them?) must have loved the third score-draw in Tenerife’s opening three league games.

But for the 12,159 crowd, watching this first home match of the season, it must have been so frustrating. At least, though, it demonstrated the fight and character in the Tenerife squad. The return of Chelsea’s on-loan Joao Rodriguez to the right wing helped the balance, and, with Bryan Acosta back in midfield, anything was possible. Deportivo started strongly. Caballo raced down the left wing and laid on a tempting cross that Quique headed over the bar. And former Aston Villa player Carles Gil crashed a shot against the home post. Striker Joao looked lively as he worked a good opening, before hitting a weak shot into the keeper’s hands. But there was a cruel twist after 14 minutes. David Simon launched a cross

into the box from the right and Borja Valle charged, head down, at Tenerife players Alberto and Jorge Saenz. He fell to the ground and the ref pointed to the penalty spot. It was a shocking decision, but Quique was delighted to convert the kick to put Deportivo ahead. However, it failed to dent Tenerife’s resolve. Joao maintained his hard work, and Jorge was having a commanding game in the centre of defence. Again, Malbasic was the main man up front. He gets stuck in and leaves plenty for his strike partners to

feed off, but the forwards are still looking for that right blend, and the team went off at half-time still trailing. Nano came on for Alberto and had a couple of missed chances, as Tenerife built some momentum in the second half. Jose Naranjo has yet to hit the back of the net, but he showed his worth by setting up the equaliser. His superb, deep cross brought the best out of Acosta, who shrugged off a defender to bury the ball past the keeper. Suso, who arrived from the bench for his 250th Tenerife game, took over from Joao with his trade-mark runs, and a smooth overlap with Luis Perez finished close to the target. Narnajo was unlucky to see the ball falling awkwardly for him, and he was only able to get a bit of his boot behind a shot. But at least it was all-out attack now for Tenerife, as Deportivo hung on. Then, curiously, Tenerife took their feet off the pedal, which encouraged the visitors to get back into the game. Borja Llarena replaced the injured Acosta, which again left Tenerife with too many forwards and an empty midfield. Keeper Dani Hernandez did well to cover a raid at the post, but, as the game went into injurytime, Borja showed a little inexperience when losing the ball up front. Deportivo raced down the other end and their Borja was able to slip the ball past Dani. But there was one more act to come in the drama,

and, fittingly, Jorge had the starring role. Naranjo was the supplier with a neat flick across, and Jorge rose majestically to head past the keeper. It was a richly-deserved moment for the local defender. His teammates mobbed him and he savoured that special moment in the final seconds before the ref blew for time. It’s a big week ahead for Tenerife, as they look for that elusive first win. Tomorrow (Saturday) they travel to Malaga for a 5pm kick-off against the league leaders, who have recorded three straight wins.

It’s a good time to play them, however, because they will be without three key players, involved in international duty. But Tenerife must keep an eye on Alex Mula, who made a big impression when loaned to Tenerife for the second half of last season. Then, on Wednesday night, it’s a rare home tie in the Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) against Cadiz, kick off 9pm. A Cup run would be handy, with a shot at one of the big boys. But climbing up the league from their current 12th place is Tenerife’s most important aim.

A packed house of over 1,200 saw new American signing Thaddus McFadden lead the assault with a manof-the-match, 15-point haul. Tenerife were sharper from the start, and, by the halfway mark, they led 40-25, the visitors’ only glimmer of hope coming with a third-quarter, 24-

Gran Canaria will point out that they had a couple of key players missing, and that it will be a lot closer in the return friendly later this month, as well as the homeand-away league clashes. But Iberostar Coach Txus Vidorreta was extremely happy with the win. “Defensively, we had a very good tone,” he said. “I’ve seen the team with clear ideas and wanting to do it right.” This weekend, Tenerife are on the mainland in Tarragona, with friendlies against Zaragoza today (Friday), and Partizan on Sunday.

Tour de Tenerife rises to the great challenge

THE musclesapping, 23km uphill climbs, through a relentless green tunnel of trees, along with 60mph (94kmph) downhill sprints through a stiff crosswind, failed to impress the Tour de Tenerife riders. In fact, it was all in a day’s work for the 14 international teams, competing in the 63rd annual race, as the

second leg crossed the ocean to La Gomera last Friday. It was quite a logistical challenge, but tourists and locals, enjoying some island-hopping, were hardly aware of the 100 riders, their bikes and support cars, three Cruz Roja (Red Cross) ambulances, 17 Guardia Civil Trafico, and 10 Angeles Verdes, the motorbike-mounted Green Angels’ out-riders. It was a smooth operation, and the La Laguna’s sports department (OAD), even brought along a lorry-load

EXTRA-TIME SWIMMING: The Swim For Life organisers will be carrying on the fight against breast cancer with their fund-raising day at T3 La Caleta on Sunday, 7th October. The popular Walk For Life stroll is on Sunday 16th December, from Adeje to Arona.

FOOTBALL: Former Brazil striker Ronaldo, who played for Real Madrid and Barcelona, as well as AC and Inter Milan, has bought La Liga football club Real Valladolid, after looking for a suitable club to take under his wing since last year. CD Tenerife were mentioned as a possible target, but he has plumped for the struggling top division club. He has bought a 51% stake, thought to have cost him some 30 million euros. Any big changes will have to wait until the January transfer window, but it will be interesting to see how hands-on he’ll be. The short-term aim, obviously, is to ensure they stay in Spain’s top league, after winning promotion last season. SWIMMING: Las Vista beach, in Los Cristianos, experienced a close finish last Sunday morning, in the Travesia a Nado Race Around The Bay. The 1.2km race was won by Adrian Coelco in a time of 14m 3s, just three seconds ahead of Carlos Perez. Top finisher for the ladies was Maria Exposito, in an impressive 14m 46s.

of crash barriers. The seven-strong British team, TBW23 Stuart Hall Gett Taxi Bottecchia, based in Gillingham, caught their breath at Los Cristianos port, as captain Daniel Nieto reviewed their equipment after Hans Decker of Belgium team, Shifting Gears, won the opening day’s 44.5km, 10lap stage in La Laguna. “All seven of us made it through yesterday,” said Nieto. “The drop-out line is anyone 12% slower than the winning time of each stage. “Our bikes each cost between £3,500-£5,000. They weigh about 5.7kg and have smooth tyres, using the same warm-up principle as Grand Prix cars. Then there’s our intake of electrolytes, caffeine gels, high-carb drinks, and two litres of water each rider, per race.”

All those fuels were certainly needed as the riders set off from San Sebastian, around the 65.6km course, through Hermigua and Agulo, and then skirting Vallehermosa and the Garajonay National Park, before racing back, down the other side of the island, back to San Sebastian. The winning time was a lightning 2hrs 3mins, and, this time, three of the Brits were outside the time limit. Saturday was a mammoth 45km climb, from La Laguna to the Teide Observatory at Izaña, over 2,300m up. And the altitude and steep rise eventually put paid to the Brits’ quick start… two miles is the biggest climb they usually face back home. Josh Copley was first of the team to finish, in 31st place, with Rob Rogers 36th, and all four survivors made it to

the final day. Adria Moreno, of French team AIV Provence, took first spot. The final day was a 47.2km challenge, from Santa Cruz to La Laguna, including a long, 22km climb to the Pico del Ingles viewpoint. And the gallant foursome all finished: Josh Copley was 29th, Rob Rogers 31st, Daniel Nieto 42nd and Cameron Foster 57th. Eusebio Pascal, of Spanish team Mutua Levante, won the stage and sealed the overall championship. The competition received a huge thumbs-up from all who competed, and the Brits, happy with finishing 10th out of the 14 teams, are eager to have another crack at it in the future. They learned a lot of lessons from the four-day event, covering 200km and climbing a total of 54km.

Series A Link

The Arona-Verona’s Serie A football link TALENTED Tenerife footballers have been offered a fasttrack route to playing in Italy with Serie A team Chievo Verona. The top-flight club are staging a football academy in Arona for the next 10 years, and are linking up with several local clubs. And, after the Verona club

signed a deal with Arona Council, they outlined their plans. “It will provide for the development of all nonprofessional clubs in Arona, and will involve nearly 700 children and 70 coaches,” said a spokesman. “The young players will work during the season with the Chievo coaches, and, at the end of each May, the best ones will be selected to travel to Italy to train in the Verona sports centre.”

Just four of the many local clubs have agreed to the initiative: CD Furia Arona, CD Buzanada, UD Ibarra, and CD Igara. The Verona club thanked Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, and Sports Councillor Juan Sebastian Roque. The Italian club, who have ambitious plans to extend their coaching network, also opened a training centre in Miami last February.

CD Marino

Keepers busy in derby thriller

THERE´S nothing like a derby clash to bring out the best in players, and both sides were indebted to their goalkeepers for the low scoring. Ammed was first to test Guimar stopper Dani Hernandez, his stinging shot from a corner setting the tone. Yesua rounded Marino’s under-19 player Jony, but Javi Saavedra was quick to move in and clear the danger. Guimar were building from the back, and Juanma came up to help force two corners, each one bringing a quality cut-out from David in the home goal. Jony, who earned a place in the starting line-up, after scoring as sub in the previous game, showed his potential when he roasted defender Pablo. His cross found former Guimar forward Gaizka in the box, but he headed against his old team-mates. Marino hit form with some well-built attacking moves, and Ammed was having a great game, creating his own chances, as well as setting up Gaizka. Sesma made a strong run to meet an Ammed ball, but he shot just past the post. But the home pressure had to pay off, and, with 23 minutes on the clock,

CD Marino 1 AU Guimar 1

Ammed took on Dani. And, though the keeper got a touch to the ball, he couldn´t stop it from entering the net for a 1-0 lead. Marino should have pulled away at this stage, but Guimar had other ideas, and, thanks to some sturdy defending, they denied the blues, especially after Prince and Jony had combined well in midfield. Sesma was frustrated by a second, late, offside call, after he thought he had

scored. But the ref was caught napping, a few minutes later. Guimar broke down the left and Prince went down after a Guimar foul. The official ignored it and Pablo was able to set up Yesua, unmarked at the far post, who equalised. Josue had a chance to send Guimar in at the break with the advantage, but his freekick was rushed, the ball clearing the Marino bar without troubling David. EGATESA Granadilla Tenerife, more ambitious than ever, start their new Premier League season on Sunday, kicking off at home against Real Sociedad at San Isidro, with a noon start. A flurry of goals awaited them on their pre-season trip to Portugal, serving as a good test as they aim to improve on last season’s fourth spot. Granadilla romped to a 6-0 victory over Vilarverdense last Thursday, with most of the damage caused in the first half. Aleksandra opened the flood gates after two minutes, and Joyce, Paola, and Andrea Marrero closed the

half with a comfortable 4-0 advantage. Eva Llamas and Sara Tui continued the punishment with a second-half goal apiece. Saturday brought a sterner test, with Granadilla losing 3-1 against Sporting Braga. The hosts pulled ahead with two goals in the first half-hour, via Uchendu, and Francisca. It took until the 63rd minute for Granadilla to

make their mark, Andrea Morrero hitting the target. But it was a short respite because Brasil wrapped up the home scoring, a few minutes later. Real Sociedad, managed by former CD Tenerife coach Gonzalez Arconada, will be a tough league opener. Admission is just eight euros, and a big crowd is expected at the top end of San Isidro.

started at a cracking pace, but Gaizka shot wide again after a Sesma run. Moving Ammed into a more central role gave Marino’s Kevin Castro free rein to exploit the right flank, and support the strikers. And keeper Dani had to be alert to stop Kevin after he had sprinted past Nata. But Guimar weren’t content to sit back and save the point, and Juanma tried a deceptively-long, hanging cross. David didn’t see how close it was until late, but he still made a wonderful, full-stretch save. Gaizka must have thought his luck was out for the afternoon, when he hit the post with the goal at his mercy. Javi Gonzalez was brought

on to freshen up the Marino push, and he showed excellent touch to control the ball, before unloading a sharp shot. Yassine also joined the action from the subs’ bench, showing his eye for goal when trying to finish off a pass. But it was just a bit too speedy, and eluded him. It was pretty, even right up to the end, but though Yesua found himself in plenty of space near the home goal, he was thwarted by a superb David stop. At the other end, Gaizka headed a cross down, but Dani was ready with the save, to ensure the draw. This weekend, Marino travel to the north of Tenerife to play newly-promoted Tacoronte.
