New health centre on way Cont. from Front The land is situated in the Llano del Camello area, and San Miguel Mayor Arturo González Hernández has emphasised the importance of the centre, which is why the Town Hall is responding to the area’s needs. “With the unblocking of this project, another request from local government is addressed,” he said. “The centre will mean a vast improvement of medical services for the important population residing in this area of our municipality.” And, in fairness, the demographic growth in Las Chafiras, during recent years, means that an appropriate health centre is needed, to meet the demand. Canary Islands President Clavijo, who has also given the project his blessing, vows to get the process through as quickly as possible, to enable work to begin. As for the characteristics of the new centre, the project includes three inter-connected modules, arranged on a single floor, for the health centre, and a basement for internal use.

It will also have four consultation rooms for family medicine and nursing, plus a paediatric section, which will include two consultation areas, and the same number of nursing spaces, as well as a waiting room. There will also be a paediatric toilet and a lactation room (a private space for mothers to breastfeed, and to use a breast pump). An emergency area will also be available, with a cardiopulmonary resuscitation room, a clinical-sample room, treatment and waiting rooms, together with toilets for patients. A women’s area is also planned, with a midwife consultation and maternityeducation room. The building will also have an administrative area and archive, for medical records, as well as an administrative office and a meeting room, in addition to changing rooms for personnel. The tender of the work will be carried out through an open procedure, with a total budget of 2,292,379 euros, in three annual payments until 2020, co-financed by the European Regional Development.

Unique temple discovery dates back to aborigines

ARCHAEOLOGISTS exploring the ancient Guanche temple of La Fortaleza, in Gran Canaria, have discovered an important item. The temple, in the Santa Lucia de Tirajana municipality, is where they have found a block of basalt (dark, volcanic rock) with engravings of linear markings, dated from the pre-Hispanic era, before the 16th century.

And these engravings, by Canarian aborigines, or Guanches, provide new evidence of the Canary Islands’ early culture and society. This example is unique because it is a stone, which was part of a mural, and, later, reused as construction material for an aboriginal house. It measures 52cm in length, with engravings made with rock, and not with metallic materials.

The researchers now believe that these line drawings were used to calculate time, or displayed an emblem. The block is said to be a milestone, because it highlights that there could be many similar items, believed to be engraved with metallic materials and dated after the Spanish Conquest. But they were actually engraved with rock, from Gran Canaria’s preHispanic era.

Drug dealer arrested at home in La Palma

A SPANIARD aged 50 has been arrested by the National Police for drugdealing in La Palma. Officers seized 34 pieces of hashish, three bags of marijuana and three sets of precision scales, together

with cash, amounting to 1,255 euros. Initially, he was caught on the streets, dealing the drugs, but police obtained a warrant and found the equipment during a search of his home. Once their report was completed, the detainee was sent to the Judicial Authority, where he is awaiting trial.

Health-hazard campers are evicted from beach Green light for mammoth road-work deal is on hold

THE Canarian Government is said to be “highly concerned” that no date has been set for signing an agreement with the Ministry of Development for road improvements. The necessary work would cost around 2,000 million euros, over eight years, but it would also lead to a huge number of jobs being created throughout the islands. Following a meeting with the Ministry of Development, Canarian Vice-President Pablo Rodriguez said: “Despite the apparent goodwill, the Canary Islands still has no date to sign an agreement that would respond to the needs of all the islands.” He said he had urged Development Minister Jose Luis Abalos to place the Canary Islands among his priorities, reminding him that he had already committed to a date for signing the agreement. But the Minister said: “The Government has just arrived in office, and some matters have been priorities, while others will be done soon. It is guaranteed that the agreement will be signed before the end of the year.” Pablo Rodriguez replied: “If possible, it should be signed this September.”

El Hierro all for plug-ins EL Hierro’s Cabildo has pledged to subsidise the purchase of electric cars by up to 7,000 euros, and will provide up to 10,000 euros for commercial vehicles. The island’s ruling body wants to promote the purchase and use of electric vehicles, and it is also keen to develop infrastructures for the recharging of these vehicles. Its main aim is to install these facilities at farms and wineries, which are isolated from the existing network.

ILLEGAL campers, on a beach in Las Galletas, were turfed off on Wednesday by the Costas (Provincial Coastal Service of Santa Cruz de Tenerife), backed up by the Guardia Civil and Arona’s Local Police. The eviction took place on the Los Enojados beach, also known as Las Burras, to recover the area for public use, as well as for health, hygiene and safety reasons. The Costas, responsible for all Spanish beaches, cleared

everyone encamped, either part-time or full-time, from the area close to El Fraile and Las Galletas. This action has been carried out before in the same area, because the beach has become a target for both camping and illegal

settlements. Unfortunately, this has generated continuous problems of health, with a large accumulation of rubbish. Simply by being there, the campers have prevented the area’s free use by other

residents and visitors, causing numerous complaints, as well safety incidents. Arona Council Social Services were not needed because there were no cases of families without resources, involving children or seniors under their care.

All ready for their returning students ADEJE Council’s departments of Education, Works and Social Services, headed by Adolfo Alonso Ferrera and Esther Rivero Vargas, have been busy throughout the summer, updating and renovating the borough’s six, primary public schools. And last week, the Councillors visited the buildings to see the reformation work which has been carried out. “The improvements are not simply meeting the needs of our education centres, but working to improve student safety in school, as well as upgrading classrooms and recreation zones,” said the Councillors. All six schools have been painted and damp-treated, with tiles and lights replaced, where necessary. The work has also included improving playgrounds and toilets, in addition

to better conditions for those students with mobility issues. And, where relevant, work on school farms has also been completed. The work has cost around 80,000 euros, and further work is on the cards in December, during the Christmas holidays. The Councillors pointed out that scheduling work twice a year means the governing body can attend to schools’ needs more efficiently.

Arona is riding high in the jobless stakes

AUGUST saw unemployment increase in 20 of the 31 Tenerife municipalities, and a 0.13% rise across the whole of the Canary Islands, to 0.23%. But Arona experienced a

1.3% drop in jobless figures, which was its first decrease in many years, and below the 7,000 registered job-seekers, according to data from the Canary Observatory of Employment (Obecan). It means the borough has the second-lowest unemployment figures in Tenerife. And all this,

despite a drop in the number of tourists visiting the area. This data shows that Arona, which has experienced two years of falling unemployment, has gone from 20.95% to under 18.76%, compared with 20.06% for the whole of the Canary Islands.

Heartless fishing crew dumped plastic in sea

A PROFESSIONAL fishing boat called El Gofio has had a denuncia filed against it, following video evidence of the crew dumping all types of waste into the sea.

The rubbish included such items as cardboard, and, the deadliest rubbish of all, plastic, by cleaning its decks every day in front of Playa San Juan and Alcalá, in the Guía de Isora municipality. Guía de Isora’s City Council has brought the video report to the attention of the Guardia Civil’s animal-protection unit, Seprona, which will determine the extent of punishment meted out to the boat-owners. If guilty, they will have expressed an irresponsible attitude towards the marine environment, very close to the coast, and, also, interfering with the sanctuary of the pilot whales. An investigation is under way.

That percentage makes Arona the second municipality in the Canaries with more than 40,000 inhabitants and less unemployment, ahead of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which has 19.24%, and only just behind neighbouring Adeje. It looks bright for Arona

over the next couple of years, too, with the opening of the municipality to increased economic investment, plus the start of a partial El Mojón plan, that has been unblocked, and in which important economic investments have already been announced.

NEWS IN BRIEF Lightning hits beach couple

TWO people were injured after being struck by lightning on the beach at Bellreguard, on Spain’s Costa Blanca. A 20-year-old man and a woman, 50, are now in hospital. The young man went into cardiac arrest, but lifeguards on the beach were able to revive him, and he was conscious by the time an ambulance and paramedics arrived. He was transferred to Gandia’s Francesc de Borja hospital after being stabilised. The other victim was also taken to the Gandia hospital, after complaining of pains in one leg.

Rampant bull gores man

A MAN aged 54 was rushed to hospital in Medina del Campo, Valladolid, last Saturday morning, after being pinned against a fence by a running bull for an entire minute. The wounded man, known only as JG, is said to be in a serious condition, the incident occurring during the annual San Antolin bull-running festival, held in his home town. In disturbing footage, the man is gored repeatedly by a large black bull, while being trapped against a wire fence. He endured the bull’s horns for almost a minute, receiving nasty injuries to his chest, arm and his rear. A fellow spectator tried his best to discourage the bull, but he was unable to stop the attack. Eventually, the bull withdrew its horns and continued its passage towards the urban section of the course. At this point, a vehicle arrived to transport JG to the regional hospital, where he had emergency surgery. Local Councillor Jose Maria Magro claimed that the man should not have been standing on the prohibited side of the fence, where the incident occurred. The bull was obviously unharmed, but reports suggest that several other bulls were put down after injuring themselves during the event.

International hacker nabbed by the police THE National Police, in collaboration with the FBI, have arrested a Ukrainian man in the Huelva province, alleged to have carried out sophisticated cyberattacks worldwide. The 30-year-old is considered to be one of the leaders of a criminal gang, known in the field of cyber security as “FIN7”. They are dedicated to executing computer attacks against companies in the catering, hospitality and games sectors. Along with other gang members, the arrested man performed computer attacks against restoration companies, mainly from the US and the UK. The gang hacked the companies’ computer systems and obtained credit-card details, used in TPVs (terminal points of sale). The cyber-attack was carried out by sending a

phishing email containing an attachment, usually a Microsoft Office file, with malicious content, or a virus. The victim, when opening the attached file, would initiate a process of downloading malicious software (virus) from a server, used for the remotecontrol of the systems, employed by the victim’s company. The remote-access software used was called CARBANAK, acquired in clandestine markets from its developers. Through the use of this complex framework, hackers would not only get data

theft and file-transfer from the victim, but also continued access. Using this process, the gang attacked more than 100 companies, from which they stole data from millions of bank cards, and, later, sold it in “carding” forums. The investigation, which remains open, began as a result of an International Rogatory Commission, issued by US authorities, and an International Detention Order. Police officers located the wanted man in a Huelva town, where he enjoyed a few days of vacation before being arrested.

Woman’s kebab knife threat

LOCAL POLICE officers arrested a woman in Mijas, Andalucia, alleged to have threatened a takeaway owner at knifepoint, after being refused an after-hours kebab. The incident took place in the Las Lagunas at around 1.50am last Monday. The woman was said to have threatened the man, verbally and physically, after he told her the kitchen was closed, according to his wife. The owner said he told the woman he couldn’t serve her food until the following day. A struggle then followed, in which the owner’s wife claimed to have been involved, inadvertently, after telling the disgruntled woman she had called the police. Local Police officers, who were sent to the area, found the woman and arrested her, before taking proceedings to the Guardia Civil.

Now we’re Helping Feet! THE Helping Hands children’s charity has turned its attention to a group of youthful, South American footballers, who, it believes, are being shortchanged. Liz Montague, who runs the charity, said: “We are

pleased to be able to help this youth group, Cafeteros, who play football in the local league. “They have some excellent players, but they’ve been unable to continue because, while Town Halls give grants to the Canarian teams, they won’t give one to this team as they are all foreigners. “We think it’s important to keep the kids off the

streets, and playing a sport is a good way to do that. So, we bought their football strip and they have a Helping Hands logo printed on them.” She added: “We love working with fellow-charity association Happy to Help, who keep finding these fantastic causes to help as many people as possible on our island.”

Serial Santa Cruz welcomes criminal 21 new police recruits is held

THE Las Palmas National Police have detained a man aged 29, who has numerous convictions and is wanted by two courts and the Provincial Court in Gran Canaria.

He was found by officers in an apartment building in the La Isleta neighbourhood, and taken, by court order, straight to prison, because there were three warrants for his arrest. He was held by officers of the Response Task Force from the city’s Provincial Civil Security Brigade, and is now in custody, awaiting trial for several crimes.

SANTA Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez officially welcomed 21 new recruits to the Local Police force in Santa Cruz on Monday, after they had completed the selection process successfully. But Bermúdez told officers to redouble their commitment to serve the city and its neighbours, and, for its part, he said, the City would continue with its policy to support and modernise the police force. He added: “We will continue investing resources, as we have done in recent years, in material improvements, and in the increase of officers to guarantee maximum security to all our neighbours, so that they feel protected, and you are satisfied in the performance of your work.” The Mayor emphasised

that there had been 43 new officers so far during his tenure, which, he said, “gives an idea of the commitment of this Government, and

of this City Council, with security. It followed no increase in the previous administration, due to economic difficulties”.

Criminals are trapped at Canarian road blocks

THE National Police have arrested five men and two women at various roadtraffic blocks in the Canary Islands, and all have police records.

He also highlighted the growing presence of women in the police force, to which six more agents had been added in this induction.

They are all aged between 25-63, and are wanted by different courts in the Canaries, Malaga, Seville and Barcelona. Each person was identified at a police-controlled road block in Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, and Las Palmas. They were all detained last Monday, and are wanted for crimes ranging from GBH to burglary. After the corresponding police reports were issued, all the detainees were placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authorities.

Airport security trays have more viruses than in toilets

Picture by Spain’s High Council of Scientific Research (CSIC)

A WORRYING report claims that airports’ plastic security trays carry more respiratory viruses than public toilets. And researchers stoked up the issue by saying: “To our knowledge, security trays are not disinfected routinely.” The study set out to investigate the presence of respiratory viruses in the passenger environment of a major airport, to identify risk points, and come up with measures to minimise transmission. Samples were collected weekly, three times a day, from various points along the passenger journey, from handrails on escalators and lift buttons, to trolley handles and toys in the children’s play-area, at a major international airport. Of the samples tested, security trays were found to pose the highest, potential risk of viral contamination, with four of eight samples testing positive. Respiratory viruses detected on the trays included adeno, influenza A, rhino and human corona OC43. In comparison, of the 42 samples taken from three areas in the airport’s public toilets, focusing on the

toilet-bowl lid, the flush and the lock, there were no detectable, respiratory viruses. Researchers believe international and national travelling has made the rapid spread of infectious diseases possible. But little information is available on the role of major traffic hubs, such as airports, in the transmission of respiratory infections, including seasonal influenza and a pandemic threat. The study made recommendations for stopping the spread of disease at airport security areas. Pointing out: “The risk of this procedure could be reduced by offering hand-sanitisation with alcohol rub, before and after security screening, and increasing the frequency of tray disinfection. To our knowledge, security trays are not routinely disinfected. “Although this would not eliminate all viruses on hands, (alcohol gels seem to be less effective than handwashing for rhinovirus), it is effective for many viruses, including influenza.” The study was based on 90 surface samples and four air samples, collected at Helsinki-Vantaa airport over a period of three weeks in 2016.

Alborán Sea holds a Spain-to-Africa hidden footbridge

SCIENTISTS have discovered a string of submerged islands, between the Cabo de Gata (Almería province) and what is now the Spanish city-province of Melilla, on the northern Moroccan coast. These islands, close to the Algerian border, are near enough to each other to have acted as a “footbridge”, before being reclaimed by the sea, between the Europe and Africa continents. The volcanic archipelago, across the Alborán Sea, was created through eruptions around 10 million years ago, and served as a bridge between the continents for animals, between five and six million years ago.

Soon after this, the gradual disappearance of volcanic activity in the region, together with the cooling of the earth’s crust across the European and African tectonic plates, meant the islands began to be covered by the sea, disappearing altogether beneath the water, some 1.8 million years ago. Dr Guillermo Booth-Rea, of the Andalucía Earth Sciences Institute, and a member of Spain’s High Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), says the “bridge” would have led to “an exchange of fauna” between Africa and Europe, with “camels and rabbits” using it mostly. Dr César Ranero, of the CSIC and the Institute of Sea Sciences, who co-authored the study, which was published in the Scientific Reports periodical, believes the bridge was making south-

eastern Europe a habitat for creatures less likely to be seen outside the tropics. DNA and RNA (ribonucleic acid) samples from western Mediterranean species show they are distantlyrelated to African species, the study shows. Some of these include lizards and geckos, which would have migrated gradually from Algeria and Morocco, and even Tunisia, to south-eastern Spain. The bridge also acted as a barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea, preventing their waters mixing, and leading to diverse flora and fauna in each, added Dr BoothRea. Eventually, this led to what is known in geological history as the Salt Crisis, in which the Mediterranean almost became a giant freshwater lake, because salt from the Atlantic hadn’t reached it.

Qualified life-guards, after just 11 months FIFTEEN Adeje youngsters have just completed an 11-month training course, in pools and open waters, which has qualified them as lifeguards, and they have the certificate to prove it! The course, under the PFAE programme (training in alternate skills), was funded by the European Social Fund “Adeje Azul, Adeje Seguro”. This is a new programme, directed by Adeje Council, with the European funding, and in conjunction with the Canarian employment service. It is designed, specifically, to meet a demand in the sector for young people, aged between 16-30, and the training dealt, primarily, in life-saving skills and safety in coastal areas. Employment Policies Councillor, Manuel Luis Méndez

Martín, said: “We actually have three active programmes in alternativeemployment training: Prodintur, focused on tourism; Limpur Adeje, cleaning and maintenance services, as

well as Adeje Azul, Adeje Seguro (Blue Adeje, Safe Adeje).” He added: “The programmes are designed for groups of people who might not have found work, for

different reasons, without this additional training. “We have had an excellent success rate in the past, and, therefore, we believe these initiatives do meet a number of needs, rap-

idly and effectively.” During the Adeje Azul, Adeje Seguro course, the participants learned life-saving techniques, how to use a defibrillator, and basic boat navigation, in addition to an English-language course, adapted to the job of a lifeguard in different situations. Another programme, a Blue Flag lifeguard course, trains individuals who might be working with special-needs bathers. The youngsters also took part in workshops to improve their self-empowerment and selfsufficiency skills, to assist them in entering the labour market. The course had participants not just learning the skills directly related to the job in question, but also in related areas, and they trained on the borough’s beaches, as well as with the local volunteer fire brigade (Bomberos). The skill-set is based, mainly, on prevention, vigilance, rescue and first-aid.

Ryanair staff up Catalan chief calling in the air again! for new referendum RYANAIR pilots and cabin crew went on strike in Germany on Wednesday, which led to 150 of the 400 planned flights in the country being grounded. The strike began at midnight, and follows a disagreement over pay and working conditions. It was the latest walk-out to hit the Irish budget airline throughout the summer, across Europe. Ingolf Schumacher, from the German pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit, said: “Despite the clear signal sent with the strike in early August, there’s still a standstill at the negotiation table.” The airline hit back in a statement, saying: “The VC union, which threatened this strike late on Monday evening, has not consulted with Ryanair’s German pilots, and has no reasonable basis for disrupting customers’ travel plans. “Ryanair has already agreed to negotiate local contracts in Germany, and agreed to mediation, and it has proposed Mr Kieran Mulvey. He is available to work immediately, and successfully mediated the Irish pilots’ dispute.

Therefore, he is familiar with all of these issues.” Ryanair’s Kenny Jacobs said: “To minimise customer disruption, Ryanair have been forced to cancel 150 of 400 flights to/from Germany. All affected customers have been notified, and informed of their options.” However, one Twitter user said: “No flights are listed as cancelled, even though they know pilots and cabin personnel won’t show up. Not sure what game it is they’re playing, but it’s infuriating.” A strike across five countries last month affected 55,000 Ryanair passengers. But the airline has recently reached a deal with Irish and Italian pilots, after discussions with their unions. A spokesperson for the airline said: “Ryanair’s people have enjoyed significant pay increases, and improved terms and conditions, and we have agreed to improve seniority structures, base transfers and annual leave. “We have done this in a year when we expect profits to fall by 15%, due to a combination of higher fuel prices and higher staff costs.”

CATALAN President Quim Torra has renewed calls for the Spanish Government to accept a referendum on independence. The move came shortly before separatist protesters took to the streets on Tuesday, to mark Catalonia’s national day, La Dia-

da. It was the first of several major demonstrations planned. Recent months have seen an easing of tensions between the secessionist Catalan Government and Madrid. But Torra has also repeated demands for charges to be dropped against nine separatist leaders. The leaders are accused of various crimes, including

the serious charge of rebellion, for their role in last year’s banned referendum. The trial could begin as early as next month, putting further pressure on Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, as he seeks a resolution to the crisis. Hundreds of thousands of Catalan independence supporters marched through Barcelona on Tuesday.

Cabildo’s transport bonus for travellers TENERIFE Cabildo President Carlos Alonso has announced three of the 10 measures which will be introduced to revolutionise transport on the island. Alonso told a press conference that the first three measures would be introduced immediately. They will embrace the free use of buses and trams for the under-10s, and reduce from 35 to 30 euros the monthly cost of island transport. The third point drops the price of metropolitan transport from 45 to 40 euros per month. “This process will apply measures that will ‘revolutionise your way of moving’, which is adopted as a campaign slogan, and the consequence of two

Runaway girl found on plane GUARDIA Civil officers, working at Tenerife North airport, found a 17-year-oldgirl, buckled up, and all set for take-off on a plane, with her family searching frantically for her. The minor had left home, planning to get as far away from the Canary Islands as possible, to live with her boyfriend. Her final destination, not yet disclosed, was kept a secret from her parents and legal guardian, which triggered the Guardia’s hunt. Officers found her on board, settling down to fly off. But the pilot was ordered to delay the takeoff, so that they could check the onboard passengers. The teenager was spotted sitting next to her 18-yearold boyfriend, and the couple were approached by officers, who questioned them, and also checked the necessary paperwork. They were looking for specific documentation, authorising the 17-year-old to travel on her own. The teenager obviously didn’t have parental authorisation, or any other necessary documentation, which would have enabled her to travel alone. The girl was told she would need some type of authorised documentation to travel, so she and her partner disembarked, voluntarily, without fuss. She was returned to her parents, who were waiting for her at the North Airport’s Guardia Civil headquarters.

squeeze Royal family step out for National Park centenary THE Spanish Royal family have been for a hike in the beautiful surroundings of Enol lake, as part of celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the Picos de Europa National Park, in northern Spain. The lake is in the Cantabrian mountains of Asturias, a rugged and stunning region that lines the northern coast, close to Santander.

It was also the first official trip that 12-year-old Leonor, Princess of Asturias, was making as heir to the Spanish throne. She was joined by her parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, as well as Infanta Sofia, her 11-yearold younger sister. The Picos de Europa, the first national park in Spain, is known for its rocky trails and dramatic scenery. The park, which has a rich wildlife including bears, wolves and deer, was awarded the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve designation in 2002.

A PATERA, carrying 31 immigrants on their way to the Canaries from Senegal, was found beached on the Mauritanian coast at dawn on Tuesday.

The occupants, all male and of legal age, had each paid 600 euros to escape from the Africa country. But they were discovered by a joint Spanish-Mauritanian team, comprising National Police, assigned to an International Co-operation Team based in West Africa, deployed to prevent illegal immigration. They had been warned

about the destination of a 20-metre-long patera, and in which direction it would follow. Once stranded, however, the migrants were taken into custody by the local army, after medical assistance. The people on board admitted they paid an organiser in a Senegalese city for the trip. They also said they had provided two engines, food, drinks, life- jackets and fuel, as well as a GPS device, with recorded co-ordinates, heading south of Gran Canaria. The officers found that one of the engines had broken down, so it would have taken the boat at least four days to reach its destination.

TWO car thieves, arrested in Lanzarote capital Arricefe after engaging in a high-speed chase with police, had to make an undignified exit when caught. They were forced to climb through a window to exit the vehicle after overturning it, following a collision with another car. The men, aged 35 and 44, who have numerous police records, had stolen the car just minutes earlier from a central street. They are accused of committing crimes against traffic safety, and of vehicle theft.

The jewel in the Alhambra crown

AN artistic “jewel”, believed to be a historic discovery, has come to light, following a threemillion-euro conservation project on Granada’s renowned Alhambra Palace, spread over 10 years. The fresco-style paintings - a technique of mural painting, executed on freshly-laid, or wet-lime plaster - found in three 15-metre vaults of the Hall of Kings (Sala de los Reyes), are said to be one-of-a-kind, worldwide, because of the artistic techniques used. The works, portraying illustrious figures from under the Nasrid rule, which was the last Muslim Arab dynasty in Iberia, were commissioned by Granada’s Muhammed V, using leather, ceramics, glass and plasterwork.

The decade-long restoration project, coordinated by the Alhambra Conservation Service and the Andalucian Institute for Historic Heritage, required an epic team of architects, chemists, art historians, biologists and conservators, together with even more experts. Since work was last carried out, by Rafael Contreras in 1855, the paintings had deteriorated rapidly, through roof leaks, which have now been sorted out. Yet, there are no sources from the Nasrid era to explain the scenes illustrated in these masterpieces, and they do not reflect depictions in Islam, which makes the art unique. The side arches depict cavalry, hunting and courtesans, while the central arch shows a meeting between the first 10 kings of the Nasrid dynasty, and the fall of this ruling marked the end of the famous AlAndalus.

Hotels having a wee problem with guests SOME British holiday-makers, in one of Spain’s most popular tourist hot-spots, have been replacing the contents of hotel minibars with liquids, sometimes urine, to avoid extra holiday charges. A survey, conducted by Costa Blanca hotel association Hosbec, claims that Brits are the worst offenders in the region. One in three tourists surveyed admitted refilling empty bottles in an attempt to avoid expensive additions

to his/her hotel bill. An association spokesman said: “We have had people filling bottles with pee, but, thank God, the staff have always detected it.” Hotels in the region are planning to make minibars redundant, and some have proposed including vending machines in shared areas. This would enable them to remove the largelyunprofitable mini-bars from their rooms. The survey also revealed that tourists admitted to stealing towels from their hotel rooms, as well as hoarding food from breakfast buffets to munch on throughout their stay.

At last, healthcare free for everyone, says Government

FREE and universal State healthcare for everyone in Spain has been restored, officially, after years of undocumented migrants being denied everything but emergency treatment. Health Minister Carmen Montón told Parliament: “For the previous rightwing, PP-led Government, axeing rights was urgent; for the current PSOE, leftwing socialist Government, restoring rights is urgent.” Back in 2012, the PP withdrew SIP, or healthcare system registration cards, from all non-EU citizens without a valid residence permit. Only in response to pressure from the opposition did MPs agree to allow them free emergency treatment, all medical cover for the under-18s, and pregnancy, labour and post-partum care (first six weeks after childbirth). In the main, this affected the extremely poor from third-world countries, some of whom had been living in Spain for years. But they had been unable to find sustainable, non-cash work to enable them to apply for residence. Given their origin, it meant that infectious and tropical diseases could, potentially, go untreated, putting the rest of the population at risk. And, as these people were in the most precarious position, unable to pay for care, what might have begun as a minor, treatable condition, could have ended up becoming an emergency

which demanded treatment, or even death. The ban also affected non-EU nationals, whose residence had expired and who were facing problems renewing it, largely through problems finding work. or having to work cash-inhand to survive. One of the most high-profile cases was that of 29-yearold Hanane, from Castellón, whose breast cancer had metastasised (spread) into her bones. But she was unable to get chemotherapy or morphine patches from her nearest hospital. After 10 years in Spain, her and her husband’s residence had expired, and, as their only income was from cash-in-hand sales at markets around the country, or seasonal fruitpicking, they were unable to renew it. Eventually, however, doctors at surgeries and hospitals, in practically every region in Spain, defied the Government and carried on treating those who were not eligible, even though they were forced to do so out-of-hours, on occasion. By the time the PSOE came to power in June, only Murcia and Asturias were not treating undocumented migrants. Perhaps, just as crucially, difficulties faced by foreigners, early-retirees or working-age residents “not in the system”, and even EU citizens, will now be appreciated. Spain has always allowed universal and free healthcare for anyone legally resident in the country, under Article 43 of the Constitution, signed in December 1978. But confusion and misinformation has long abounded,

with non-working expats under State-pension age believing, or even being told, “officially”, that they needed private health insurance to gain treatment. However, some confusion still exists, since non-EU citizens must show proof of health insurance to be able to apply for residence, even though they will be covered by the State once they are legally resident. But this puzzle is likely to be clarified, gradually. There also remains some confusion about whether Carmen Montón even intends to extend free healthcare to tourists. EU citizens carrying an EHIC card can obtain treatment for “emergency” care, defined as anything that cannot wait until they return home, and not necessarily a life-or-death situation. Yet Foreign Offices outside Spain still urge tourists to take out insurance to cover any shortfall. Non-EU citizens, visiting for holidays or more-extended periods, but not long enough to be considered “resident”, should have travel insurance. Until the situation becomes clearer, tourists in Spain should still take out the usual insurance, to avoid unexpected healthcare bills. At present, based on the Health Minister’s announcement, rights to healthcare will be based upon residence rather than people being “insured”, or “beneficiaries”. The PP criticised the move, claiming it could open the door to “rich Americans becoming health tourists” in Spain, if they are insured for the treatment they needed in the US.

Car-crash man is shot dead by cops

POLICE officers shot a British man dead in Estepona, Malaga, on Monday evening, after he fired at the cops when they tried to arrest him. The incident began in the morning, when a number of people called emergency services to report a traffic accident, near Puerto Banus, in Marbella, involving Sean Hercules (pictured, inset), otherwise known as Shacker, from Leeds. According to witnesses, he was armed when he emerged from the crashed vehicle. But rather than waiting for help, he fled. National Police discovered his identity, leading them to Estepona’s Autosole Aparthotel, in Cancelada, that afternoon. But when officers attempted to detain Hercules, they realised he was carrying two guns and four magazines, and he shot at them, prompting them to return the fire. Emergency crews were called to the scene at around 5pm, but they were

unable to save the life of Hercules, who had a criminal record for drug-trafficking and possession of weapons. It was not known why the suspect was being arrested, but the officers involved were believed to be from a police robbery unit. According to the Sun newspaper, cops followed the man back to his hotel from Marbella, after becoming suspicious about his behaviour. Malaga Policia Nacional said: “Police have had to repel an armed man who shot at them. He has been killed. The matter remains under investigation.” Monday’s incident was the second Estepona death by shooting in under a month. On 20th August, a 34-year-old Spanish man was killed by a hooded assailant, who later fled the scene on a bicycle. The shooting happened in the early hours of the morning, in a residential estate in the east of the municipality. The victim was about to enter his home when he was killed.

Durex has recalled Real Feel condoms DUREX has issued an urgent recall of 14 specific batches of its branded condoms, after tests showed they “failed to meet stringent, shelf-life, durability tests”.

The batches include Real Feel, Sin Latex, although others on sale in the rest of Europe have also been recalled. These include Love Collection, Natural Feeling and Natural Sensation brands of condoms. Reckitt Benckiser, the company behind the Durex brand, issued a recall statement, saying: “The safety of our consumers always comes first, and this is reflected in our rigorous-quality standards. “We recently found that a limited number of the condoms made earlier this year were not passing our stringent, shelf-life, durability tests. “Our tests have shown that some batches currently on the market do not pass the requirements for burst

pressure towards the end of the shelf life for the product.” For those condoms affected, the group said: “There could be an increase in the number of condoms that burst during application or use.” Durex added: “There is no immediate safety concern for consumers, and only a limited number of batches are affected.”

Hopes for a clean-break Brexit boost GBP/EUR exchange rates

By Carol schleisman at currencies direct

THE pound has been strongly influenced by Brexit over the past two weeks, making tentative gains against the euro, but having a harder time against the US dollar. The GBP/EUR rate has improved over the last fortnight, opening at 1.10 euros, and hitting 1.12 last week; the pairing has, most recently, fallen back to 1.11. On the other side, the EUR/ GBP exchange rate has fallen from £0.90 to £0.89, over the same period. Elsewhere, the GBP/USD exchange rate opened at $1.28, and rose to $1.30 over the past two weeks; sterling has since fallen to $1.29 in the pairing. The EUR/USD rate has fallen from $1.16 to $1.15, over the two-week period. The last fortnight has seen the pound fluctuate on Brexit speculation, with only limited domestic data being released, to give traders something to go on. The main support

for sterling has been the assumption that a no-deal Brexit could be avoided, following remarks from EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier. Mr Barnier did not specifically rule out a nodeal Brexit, but raised hopes for imminent progress in negotiations that could lead to a good deal being struck, between the UK and the EU. Euro traders drew the short straw, with Eurozone data showing falling economic confidence, and a reduction in the overall Eurozone inflation rate. US dollar movement was dominated by trading news; the US currency rose when it was reported that the US and Mexico had agreed to a provisionally-revised trade deal. Less supportive were concerns about the next round of US-Chinese trade tariffs, which experts believe could cause economic pain for manufacturers in both nations. A key Bank of England (BoE) meeting was held yesterday (Thursday), during which BoE officials discussed whether to adjust interest rates. Policymakers aren’t expected to change the rate from 0.75%, but could still trigger GBP/EUR and GBP/USD exchangerate gains, if they hint at a 2019 rate hike.

Another major piece of UK data will be 19th September’s inflationrate readings for August. If inflation picks up, then sterling could also appreciate, due to greater pressure on the BoE to consider raising interest rates. The euro could be moved by yesterday’s European Central Bank (ECB) meeting, if, like the BoE officials, ECB policymakers hint at higher interest rates in the future. Yesterday was also a key meeting for US dollar movement, when key inflation rate figures for August were due out. If the readings show a slowdown,

then the US dollar could fall in value, as slower inflation reduces the likelihood of a near-term, Fed interest-rate hike. ‘No inheritance tax for Sánchez has Brexit close family members’ firmly on his mind CIUDADANOS, the centre-right political opposition party, wants the Government to scrap inheritance tax between parents and children and spouses. The party also wants it reduced, dramatically, for the more-distant family members, and those where the deceased and the beneficiary have business connections. Last year saw record highs of people refusing inheritances. In fact, one in every 10 was rejected because, in Spain, the tax has to be paid before the assets transfer into beneficiaries’ names. But they are given just six months to pay the tax, and Ciudadanos wants to increase this to at least one year, when the estate comprises at least 75% fixed assets. It is also calling for payment “in kind” instead of in

cash, if necessary. Albert Rivera’s party says the tax should be reduced to zero if the beneficiary is a child or parent, spouse or unmarried partner of the deceased, and where the inheritance is the latter’s permanent home. This tax exemption would also apply to second-or third-degree relatives, or even more distant ones when the beneficiary in question does not own a home of his or her own. Garages and outbuildings, even if not purchased at the same time as the home, would also be included. Zero tax would, additionally, apply when the inheritance is a business or portfolio of enterprises, and which has been left to either relatives or non-blood relations, who had a business relationship with the deceased, such as an employee or trade

partner. Farms and other land-based industries, including farmland for noncommercial use, would be included. Discounts could be scaled, based upon the degree of relations between deceased and beneficiary, and also by disability, and they would apply to “succession tax”, when property transfer is made in life, to prevent problems for beneficiaries after the benefactor dies. Zero tax would apply to inheritances of under one million euros, with the taxfree threshold for secondand-third-degree relatives reduced to 350,000 euros, and, for more distant relatives, 125,000 euros. This would increase to 180,000 euros when the beneficiary has a disability of at least 33%, or 360,000 euros if the disability is at least 65%.

SPANISH Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s meeting with Swedish compatriot Stefan Löfven last week, in Enköping, led to discussions on key issues for the European Union’s future. Sánchez made it clear to Löfven that bilateral relations between the two countries were excellent, and the two leaders went on to consider social cohesion, migration... and Brexit! The two leaders shared their pro-European vocation, to defend the fundamental values that maintain the EU. They also agreed to work together to find solutions for the main challenges affecting Europe. Afterwards, Sánchez expressed his admiration for the Swedish Government’s leadership in advocating and promoting the social pillar in Europe, and saw it as “a priority of both governments”, adding: “It has served as a source

of inspiration for many European governments.” The two men were also in complete agreement on migration, another of the main European challenges. And they are committed to a global approach, based on dialogue and co-operation, with the countries of transit and origin, along with respect for human rights. Their meeting served as a build-up to the informal meeting of the EU’s Heads of State and Government on Thursday (20th Sept) in Salzburg, Austria.

Ancient Invisible Cities: Athens c h o i c e BBC2, 21.00

Michael Scott uses the latest laser scanning technology to reveal the historical secrets of ancient Athens. In an adventure that involves descending into an underground aqueduct, crawling through an ancient silver mine and revealing the secrets of a temple on the Acropolis, he also tells the story of how this remarkable city created the world’s first democracy. He begins his journey on the Acropolis where the people of Athens overthrew a tyrant in the late 6th century BC. He investigates a mysterious, asymmetrical temple called the Erechtheion that sits in the shadow of the world famous Parthenon. He uses spectacular laser scans and a virtual reality reconstruction to decode the stories from ancient Greek mythology that were built into this temple and reveals it to be one of the most important ancient buildings of Athens. To the south of the city, he clambers through a silver mine where an army of slaves once toiled inside the labyrinth of narrow tunnels. The Athenians voted on what to do with their windfall of silver. Instead of distributing it among the citizens, they decided to invest it in a fleet of warships that would help them resist a Persian invasion. Michael uses scans and graphics to reconstruct the dry docks where the warships were housed. He also investigates a harbour where Athens defended its young democracy and explores newly discovered remains of the harbour defences. Concealed inside an underground carpark, he discovers massive sections of Athens’ city walls built in the 5th century BC to protect the city from any future attackers. He concludes that the spirit of Athens is found as much in its hidden underground spaces as it is on the more famous monuments of the Acropolis.

The four remaining celebrities in the final heat face three more culinary challenges as they battle for a place in the semi-finals. The first challenge is the new Pairs Challenge, where the four celebrities are split into two teams of two. Each team is tasked with cooking the same dish, but in-between each pair there is a wall. The only way for the celebrities to successfully produce identical plates is by communicating with their teammate through the wall. The celebrities are then sent out on their first mass-catering challenge. Remaining in their teams they have to make lunch for over 100 members of staff and students at the Royal Veterinary College in Hertfordshire. It is then back to the MasterChef kitchen, where the four celebrities must cook a faultless two-course meal that is not only judged by John and Gregg but also by Celebrity MasterChef champion Alexis Conran, semi-finalist Reverend Richard Coles and finalist Andi Peters.

Chase The Case BBC1, 14.15

In this exciting strategic gameshow hosted by Dan Walker, five contestants trade general knowledge for information to gain access to a case containing a secret amount of cash. Players put their knowledge to the test and answer questions to reach the coveted secret vault, where they can learn information about what’s in their opponents’ cases, using ‘Peek’ and ‘More Or Less’ options. Through a process of deduction, the shrewdest of contestants can win big, but not before they succeed in a nail-biting endgame where players attempt to steal each other’s cases via tense head-to-head challenges, which has the potential to cause major upset just as it looks clear who will be champion. Chase The Case tests the mettle of its brave contestants, but ultimately only one can succeed in the chase. Victory will require a fierce grasp of general knowledge, a wily game plan, and a seriously convincing ‘case face’.

Phebe’s star keeps shining KEDDY’S Entertainment is always on the lookout for upand-coming talent, and our scouts were excited to find one of the next stars to perform at our showcase, back in April, for The UK X Factor. We thought we would introduce this next generation of talent to all our readers, here in Tenerife. Phebe Skirrow was born in Tenerife in November 2003, and lives with her parents, Matthew and Alison. Her brother Jak, 18, played football for CD Tenerife, and now studies at Loughborough College, in the UK. Phebe started dancing at the tender age of three, at the Ritmania Fame Academy, Los Cristianos. Owners Emma Burgess and Carla Guest knew, back then, that she had a “special something”. Phebe’s first audition was, aged seven, for the dance role of Junior Michael Jackson in the European Tour of stage musical “Forever King of Pop”, endorsed by the Jackson family. Choreographer Yolanda Torosio, scenic and artistic director Jesus Sanz San Sebastian, and the creator of the show Carlos López, chose Phebe to play this iconic role. She hooked them with her selfconfidence and great stage presence. She made a number of TV appearances, and performed in front of thousands of people at the Pabellon Santiago Martin, La Laguna. Throughout the summer of 2012, Phebe was also very privileged to be asked to perform in the musical show “History”, at Magma Art & Congress. She sang “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from “The Wizard of Oz”, and also danced to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”, three nights a week. In the

same year, alongside eight other students, she won the televised Canaries talent show “Islasvision Junior”. In 2014, Phebe auditioned for a new TV show “Pequeños Gigantes”, singing and dancing her way to the semi-finals, which took place in Madrid. In 2017, her dance and theatre school were asked to compete again in “Islasvision Fit Talent

Junior”, a competition of 12 groups throughout the Canary Isles, who were previous finalists and winners. The theme was Musicals, and 20 students danced their hearts out to “42nd Street”. Phebe was very honoured to sing solo vocals, and Ritmania were crowned winners, once again! Phebe also turned her hand to strutting the catwalk,

showcasing the beautiful dresses from Cinderellas in La Caleta, owned by Anna Mariel Nolan. She said: “I felt like a princess for the day, and absolutely loved it!” Her latest achievement was to be asked to join a showcase of Tenerife’s finest talent for the Tenerife auditions of The UK X Factor. Vocal coach Natalie Brito Stafford, from Keddy’s Entertainment, put her name forward. Phebe, and other local artists, performed in front of the X Factor producers at the Sandos Hotel, San Blas, Golf del Sur. At 14, she was the youngest performer, and was extremely grateful to Adam Keddy for giving her the opportunity. She told the producers: “I become a different person when I’m on stage, and it makes me feel alive.” She has just started her final year at El Medano High School, and loves spending her spare time attending Ritmania Fame Academy, studying ballet, tap, modern, funky, hiphop, lyrical, Broadway, acro, Irish, singing, drama and musical theatre. Phebe said: “I have made so many wonderful friends at Ritmania over the years. We are one big family, and always there for each other.” She has achieved Distinction, with Honours, through dance examination

board IDT, and is looking forward to taking her first LAMDA performance examination, in coming months. Something different that Phebe is very excited about is starring in Tenerife’s first pantomime this Christmas. “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” is directed by musical theatre and drama teacher, Lone Guest, with support from Joe Cawley, Tenerife’s very own local author of bestselling “More Ketchup Than Salsa: Confessions of a Tenerife Barman”. Phebe said: “I am loving playing the role of The Grinch. He’s definitely a character, just like me!” Her ambition is to gain a scholarship to a performingarts school in the UK. She said: “I was very lucky to be shown around London’s Urdang Academy last December. As soon as I walked into the reception, I knew this was where I wanted to study. I attended their Summer School in August.” When asking Phebe who has inspired her, musically, she said: “Definitely Christina Aguilera. I adore the film Burlesque; it’s one of my favourites. I just love the power and range in her voice. She’s amazing. Also, Adele - who doesn’t love Adele? And then there’s Bruno Mars and Michael Jackson; the list is endless!” Phebe and fellow student Shannon O’Reilly successfully landed roles in the American production of “The Princess and the Pea” in Hot Springs, USA. They performed in July, and smashed it! Phebe’s passion for the performing arts is extremely clear to see, and we wish her every success in the future. Watch this space for news of this talented young lady! If you, or anyone you know, has a story to tell like this, then get in touch with us at info@ keddysentertainment.com Don’t forget to check out our Facebook page, Keddy’s Entertainment, for vacancies, events and much more. Until next time, enjoy this wonderful island we call home.

Enjoy this delicious Roman vegetable!

BROCCOLI was cultivated in Italy, in ancient Roman times, from wild cabbage. It is really a very large flower top, picked before it blooms. It gets its name from the Italian word “broccolo”, which means “cabbage sprout”. Broccoli was first introduced to the US by Italian immigrants, but did not become widely known until the 1920s. The States are the thirdlargest broccoli producers in the world (after China and India), and grow over one million tons a year. Broccoli’s “sistervegetable”, cauliflower, is also a mild anti-allergic. It encourages the production of antibodies, and is thought to help protect against allergies, asthma, migraines and depression. Just ½ a cup per day, or a couple of two-cup servings

33 CW

per week, has been shown to be enough to obtain some cancer-prevention benefits. Broccoli sprouts have also, recently, become popular, as a result of research uncovering their high concentration of the anti-cancer phytonutrient, sulforaphane. A cup of cooked broccoli offers as much Vitamin C as an orange, and is a good source of beta-carotene. It

contains Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, iron, magnesium, potassium and zinc. It also provides fibre, and is low in calories. For those interested in lowering cholesterol, the fibre-related components in broccoli do a better job of binding together with bile acids in your digestive tract when they’ve been steamed. When this binding process takes place, it’s easier for bile acids to be

excreted, and the result is a lowering of your cholesterol levels. Raw broccoli has slightly less effect on cholesterol, but more in other areas. Avoid overcooking broccoli because about half of its beneficial substances may be destroyed in the process. Also, microwaving is thought to remove valuable nutrients. Light steaming is best, for just a couple of minutes,

until it turns bright green. Stop cooking while it still has a bit of firmness to it. It can be added with cauliflower to soups and stews. * Eat broccoli or cauliflower, raw or lightly steamed, with a dip, or pour an olive oil lemon dressing over it * Chop lightly-steamed broccoli and cauliflower and add to a pasta salad. Add pepper to taste * Purée cooked broccoli and cauliflower, then combine with seasonings * Toss pasta with olive oil, pine nuts and steamed broccoli florets * Add broccoli florets and chopped stalks to omelettes. A new way to enjoy broccoli is to roast it! Place fresh broccoli on a metal sheet lined with aluminum foil, and spray with oil. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and some Parmesan cheese on top, and roast the broccoli at 450 degrees for 15 minutes. It will have a deliciously nutty taste that will have you craving more!

By kaizen wellness & Beauty IF you have yet to start massaging your skincare into your face, you should probably start now. Apart from evoking that spa-like level of relaxation in the privacy of your own bathroom, working some circular motions over the contours of your face packs major benefits for your overall complexion. Perhaps this is common knowledge to some, but there’s certainly an art to the technique, and specialists advise doing it as often as twice a day. The face has over 40 muscles, so massaging this area is not just good for applying products, but also for moving energy, addressing sinus issues and reducing puffiness, by promoting lymphatic drainage. It also stimulates your

skin, and circulation is increased which draws blood to the surface, giving you a refreshed appearance and feeling. Additionally, activating your muscles every day can help to impart a more-toned appearance in the long term. Key times to work your skills are before you go to bed at night, and first thing in the morning. You will need to apply gentle-butfirm pressure from your fingertips. After applying a product as a lubricator, start from the bottom of your face and massage upwards to the cheek area. We tend to hold the most stress on the bottom of our face near our cheeks and jaw line, so helping to release the tension here will detoxify and relax your skin. As you work your way upwards, use just your ring fingers to massage the eye area. Start on the eyebrows and go around and

down, holding and dragging your finger until they’re released, near the corners of your eyes. Once you reach your forehead, we advise tapping in an upward

motion to promote blood circulation and cell turnover in that area. If you would like to learn more about anti-ageing facial treatments, contact

Routine car checks By Emma

from Motorworld

WE all know that we should carry out routine checks and services on our car, but, in reality, who does? Too few people make

even the most minor checks on their cars, and are often faced with substantial bills to put things right, because they have failed to look after their trusted vehicles. If you have a dog or cat, you have to feed it (fuel for a car), walk it (drive it with care), provide drinks (check water levels), shelter (park it safely in a garage

or shady area, where possible), have routine vaccinations (regular servicing), and make sure it’s micro-chipped (ensure the vehicle is in your name, and that your address is up to date at DGT). Well, for a car, what do you do? Put petrol or diesel in, and occasionally wash it, usually after a calima when you cannot see through the windscreen! And, more often than not, not a lot else. To ensure that you get the best out of your car, you need to “nurture” it. So let's look at what you should do. Check oil and water I am sure that almost everyone reading this will be aware that they should check the levels of the oil and water in their car, but don't. Why should you do this? If a car is driven without water, especially in the extreme heat we often experience, here in Tenerife, the engine is

likely to seize and stop. This causes untold damage, often with the vehicle requiring a new or refurbished engine, which, sadly, is not cheap, as well as pistons, water pump, gaskets and head gasket, to name but a few items that people may recognise. Therefore, it is vitally important that you check the car's oil and water levels on a regular basis, and, if you notice any substantial drop in these, go to your garage or mechanic for them to assess and check. A simple thing like filling up the water or oil and leaving the cap off, or very loose, can have catastrophic consequences. Be safe, not sorry. Tyres The tyres of your car are very important because they, with the brakes, are what will stop your car quickly in the event of an incident or accident. If you have tyres which

are not correctly fitted or are worn, when you need them most, to stop your vehicle, they are likely to give up, because there will be little, or no, rubber tread left to grip the road surface. We see many cars with metal showing where the tyres have been used for far too long, or were of a very poor quality when first fitted. You may notice a rumbling noise when driving, or a vibration through the steering wheel, which can be an indication of tyre wear, and should be checked. The police have been known to issue a fine, if they see a car parked with metal showing through - so beware. Regular servicing This is something that most people tend to avoid, unless they have a brand-new car which is subject to a manufacturer's warranty, where the servicing is integral to the warranty.

However, during a routine service, where the oil and filters are normally changed, the brakes and tyres are checked and changed where necessary, or an advisory note is given on your invoice, or verbally (often both). Some of the dangers that occur can be avoided by having this done to your car. The costs are not expensive, although services offered differ substantially, because the quality of the oil, filters, brake pads and tyres used affects the price. Using cheap oil is not recommended because it is generally too thin, and doesn't provide the care and adequate lubrication required by the engine. The car handbook will tell you the type and specification of the oil that the engine requires to run efficiently. Not all oils of the same type meet the same specifications.

Alejandro is new Mr Los Abrigos!

14th September - 20th September 2018

Cats Welfare News

It’s sweet music to Cats Welfare ears! LAST Saturday saw the Cats Welfare charity holding a unique event at Harvey’s Bar in Los Cristianos, based on TV’s popular Stars In Their Eyes.

ON Thursday 6th September, Jason Slater, head of Los Abrigos Properties, handed over his title of Mr Los Abrigos to the new winner, Alejandro Gonzalez. As always, the competition was held in the village square, at the entrance to the harbour. Jason, now 21, went on to compete in the Mr Tenerife competition, held, recently, in La Oratava. He was placed among the last ten finalists, out of a total of over twenty contestants who were chosen, after the elimations, to compete. Whilst he didn’t win, he was

Adoptions If you adopt a second kitten, it will be neutered and microchipped, free of charge. Also, it will be wormed and deflead, and be given its first kitten injections. This applies to ALL black kittens, not just the second. more than pleased with his achievement, and is the first Brit to get that far! He has dedicated himself to keeping fit, and has entered many calisthenics (a form of gymnastics) competitions. He was asked by the Council to go to La Gomera, expenses paid, to teach calisthenics to the underprivileged children on the island. It’s a sport which is inexpensive to learn, and motivates youths to concentrate on fitness, as opposed to drugs. In the meantime, Jason dedicates his working day to promoting sales and rentals, in and around the Los Abrigos area. A fine inspiration to young and old!

Keith (Louis Armstrong, pictured bottom left), Janet (Amy Winehouse, pictured top right), Steiner (Bon Jovi, pictured top left), Dave (Frank Sinatra), Paul K (Neil Sedaka), Muriel (Blondie), Clive (Bruno Mars) and Paul R (David Bowie) battled it out to be voted best act of the evening, all performing impressive renditions of their chosen artistes. A couple of holiday-makers formed the judging panel, with residents and visitors getting caught up in the lively atmosphere. Bon Jovi won the proceedings, with Amy Winehouse being placed second, and Louis Armstrong third. Well done to all those who competed. A fantastic total of over 1200 euros was raised, and special thanks must go to those who donated such superb raffle prizes, as well as the huge container holding over 800 sweets! Host Mark executed his compering duties magnificently, expertly sealing a brilliant evening, and entertaining the crowd

Alex and Lana WE have more than 200 dogs at the refuge, looking and patiently waiting for a new, loving home. The love from dogs is unconditional, until the day they die. They are very therapeutic in helping us during times of sadness or joy; real partners for life. The daily cruelty cases that we see are heart-rending, when dogs arrive in terrible conditions. But, with veterinary care and our dedicated team of staff, after the legal, 21day waiting period, the dogs soon forget their horrendous pasts, and still trust us humans to love and care for them. One such dog is Alex, who arrived at the refuge five years ago with a terrible skin problem caused by fleas. So many people passed him by, because he looked terrible, but Lana Bellamy fell in love with him instantly, and they have had five very happy years together. Please do come and visit us if you are interested in adopting a dog. We do not charge, but donations are very welcome towards the vast running costs of

the refuge. Assistance required Please do call the refuge on 6643 21219, between 8am-5pm, if you can help in any way. Big-guns fire blanks! Malaga 1 CD Tenerife 0 By Colin Kirby

CD Tenerife update

GOALS create victories, which is why Tenerife bought strikers Nano and Naranjo in the summer. But they still couldn’t open their league account at Malaga on Saturday. That’s just three points from their opening four games and the team are getting jittery. True, Malaga are a strong side, and this was their fourth straight win. True, also, is that Tenerife created plenty of chances, but their lack of goals is affecting the whole team. Alberto was dropped to maintain the two new strikers, plus Joao Rodriguez on the right wing, which left Bryan Acosta and Luis Milla stretched in midfield. Jack Harper, Spanish with Scottish parents, picked his way through the Tenerife defence to fire an early warning at Dani Hernandez in goal, before Acosta picked out Malbasic, who couldn’t get a clean shot.

Joao was trying to balance his attacking instincts against the need to cover back, and Ontiveros robbed him of the ball. But, thankfully, it came to nothing. Milla conjured up an opening, but his skill was wasted when Nano ran into a defender from his pass. Ontiveros, who was trouble on the left, thundered a free shot towards the Tenerife goal, but Dani patted it down and took it with his second touch. The home player followed up with a cross to Blanco, whose header lacked direction. The first half was continuing the pattern of slow starts by Tenerife, although Naranjo could

have changed that with a well-taken free-kick after Joao was fouled. But a defender headed away the danger. Luis Perez, having a poor game at right-back for the visitors, was exposed cruelly by Ontiveros. He played the ball on to Blanco, who slipped it past Dani for a 35th-minute lead. Another big blow arrived a few minutes later. Jorge had just shaken off a bang to the head after making a vital clearance, but Joao was less resilient when a foul by Lagen took his trailing leg. The winger couldn’t play on, so captain Suso took over his rightflank duties.

Some people think Suso should be gardening or taking up bowls, but the 33-year-old still has fire in his belly and pace in his feet. Twice in the opening minutes of the second half, the skipper set up Naranjo, who wasn´t quite on the same wavelength. Suso took it on and beat two defenders, before firing a shot low at the near post to make the keeper look a little lively. Montañes became the second Tenerife sub, taking over from Naranjo out on the left. Suso was caught in two minds when Milla found him with a pass, with Malbasic begging for the

ball in front of goal. But the captain had a go himself and missed the target. Tenerife were now giving as good as they got, and a stray free-kick fell back to Milla, who hit a cracking shot which went tantalisingly close. Nano carved out an opening for Malbasic, but the Serbian couldn’t get his shot past the oncoming defender. Home sub Juankar was starting to look a handful, but Perez demonstrated that his confidence was premature, by nicking the ball off him in full stride. Coach Exteberria had his sights set on at least a point, bringing on 19-yearold striker Borja for leftback Camille, with 13 minutes left. It kick-started a late charge. Suso showed great vision by cutting inside and curling a shot past two defenders. Only a ping off the post, and out, stopped it from being on all the football round-up shows. Dani repelled Malaga with two late saves, and the last action of the game was a snatched shot from Montañes. It’s still early days, but CD Tenerife weren’t planning to be in 16th spot at this stage. And neither were the fans!

Copa del Ray

Tenerife Cup of woe CHANGES needed to be made and this Cup game at home against Cadiz on Wednesday night seemed to be the perfect opportunity. Sadly, though, the underlying goal-scoring problems remained, and a few new ones emerged, leading to an injury-time defeat. On the plus side, the defence was on top form, with Hector Hernandez, the last-minute, transferwindow addition, making a sound debut at left-back. Another change, bringing in back-up keeper Angel Galvan, was not as positive. He had little to do, yet he made a badly-timed dive that saw the winning shot pass right under him. The plan was that struggling strikers Nano and Naranjo

CD Tenerife 1 Cadiz 2

would use the game, against a much-changed Cadiz side, to find their shooting boots. Nano, who showed some of his old pace, was still lightweight in front of goal, though he did hit the post and struck a simple shot straight at the keeper. And Naranjo, who seemed lost, wasn’t much

help to his team-mates. The midfield was again negative, with Alberto and Undabarrena playing deep. Unfortunately, creative midfielders Luis Milla and Bryan Acosta were on the bench. Cadiz never looked back after a ninth-minute opener. A Ramos cross eluded

Carlos Ruiz, and gave a free header to Romera. That was about all Angel Galvan saw of the ball in the first half, because his defence were doing a good job, Ruiz settled back into his assured play, and Jorge Saenz continued his recent emergence as a dominant defender. The second half moved up a pace. Galvan made a confident save from a corner, Ruiz went close with a header, which was met with ease by impressive Cadiz keeper David Gil. Luis Milla came on for Alberto, and Malbasic for Nano, and the changes boosted Tenerife, Milla letting rip with a long shot just over the bar. Acosta replaced Undabarrena, and it seemed as though the 8,777 home fans

might have something to look forward to. Malbasic blew hot and cold, his best effort being a curling shot over the woodwork. Jorge joined the attack to meet a high ball, only to be out-jumped by Gil. The minutes were running out, but Naranjo took a short corner, and Carlos Ruiz got his head under the flying ball to nudge it into the roof of the net. An extra 30 minutes, and possible penalties loomed. But in injury time, Galvan made his grave error, and the Cup dream was over. Coach Exteberria has a big job on his hands. Tomorrow (Saturday) at 5pm, Reus are the visitors to Santa Cruz. They are one of the few teams in the table below CD Tenerife, who must beat them to kick-start the season.

Hard-men Suters sparkle SUTERS 20:30 Crew were again in fine form at home against Sandys, but they showed no mercy in winning 8-0. The home team’s Jimmy hit a maximum, and Paddy replied with one for the visitors. But there were some excellent darts from Suters, who finished 11 legs in 14 darts, or less. Marilyns ‘A’ are finding out about how difficult life is in the top

league, as they hosted The Pub and went down 7-1, thanks to 180s from Sam and Pablo, and a fine 164 finish for birthday-boy Grizzly. Ourplace Playboys suffered the same scoreline, as Pas O Nadas ‘A’ came calling. And Qualty, with a 127 checkout, was the star of the show, for a change. Mad Hatters took on The Loch-In ‘A’, who found James playing the darts of his life with a 180, and finishes of 118 and 114, while Paul checked out on 115,

when Gaston, who handled in the area, was sent off for a second booking. Airam strode up to claim the

penalty goal, which was a first for his club at the highest league level in their history. Marino held it together until the break, and then made two changes to cope with the one-man disadvantage, Yassine and Fayez coming on for Jonathan Sesma and Kevin Castro. The introduction of Israel player Fayez proved to be an important move, because he scored the equaliser after 66 minutes. This Sunday is the first of Marino’s two successive home games in Spain’s Tercera Division, at their Las Americas stadium. Las Palmas C are the visitors, and the match kicks off at the slightly-later time of 12.15pm.

EXTRA-TIME WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Spain were the first squad to arrive in Tenerife for the Women’s Basketball World Championship, which takes place between 22nd-30th September in Santa Cruz. Spain, who include Tenerifeborn Leonor Rodriguez, jetted in fresh from beating Greece 80-56 in a warm-up game.

FOOTBALL: Plans are moving ahead for Girona v Barcelona to become the first La Liga game to be played in America, on 26th January next year. The venue will be the Hard Rock Stadium, which is the 65,000capacity home of Miami Dolphins’ American Football team.

Ladies’ Football

Granadilla revival falls short BARELY an hour gone, and Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife had a mountain to scale, as Real Sociedad went 3-0 ahead at San Isidro.

It could have knocked the spirit out of the home side in their first league game, but three key changes at half-time influenced the play, and the visitors were forced to hang on for the points. Six quality arrivals in the summer bolstered Granadilla, with Brazilians Ailine Reis, in goal, and midfielder Joyce Borini, soon heavily involved. Borini showed a good turn of speed down the left before firing over the bar, while, at the other end, Reis leapt well to take control of a high cross. There’s often a swirling wind at the top end of San Isidro, and when home forward Cristina Martin-Prieto sent a header towards goal, Sociedad keeper Quiñones guessed correctly before snuffing out the danger. Sociedad took 14 minutes to get going, and Chini Pizarro put them ahead, finishing off a pitch-length move at the post, after Borini only half-cleared a counter-attack. It was a clear warning of how lethal Sociedad could be on the break, and Uriarte nearly doubled the advantage with a fierce blast, which went wide. Maria Jose Perez did her best to get her team level, by linking with the tricky Ange Koko as she cut in from the right. But Quiñones stood firm as the Ivory Coast player tried to chip over her. Sociedad were a tough, physical team, and Koko took the brunt of some

Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 2 Real Sociedad 3

crunching tackles as Granadilla fought to get back into the game. But the visitors were quick to change tempo. Captain Nahikari had just failed to reach one loose ball in front of goal, but she adjusted well a few minutes later to feed Cardona, who scored on the vulnerable left of the home defence. However, there was still plenty of fight in the home side. Beltran was booked for a foul on Koko, and Cindy Garcia took the freekick, only to blast the ball straight at the keeper. There was a lot of thinking to be done during the halftime break, and coach Toni Ayala was bold and radical with his changes for the second half. Borini, Martin-Prieto and Silvia Doblado departed. On came American Jackie Simpson at right-back, freeing Cindy Garcia to push forward. Ana Gonzalez and Sara Tui also added more spice to their attacking options. Chini brought down Maria Jose, who climbed to her

feet and fired a shot that came back off the bar. Maria Estella joined the all-out charge with a well-

placed cross for Maria Jose, to chase near the Sociedad keeper. All that adventurous play

left gaps for Sociedad to fill, and Nahkari, who found herself facing Simpson, curled the ball past her and Reis to make it 3-0. Attack was still the only option for Granadilla if they wanted to get something out of the game. Jackie Simpson is always pushed up for set-pieces for her heading ability, and she went close from an Estella pass. Koko and Tui managed two more good opportunities as they stepped up the pressure. The breakthrough came from another Koko run and lay-off to Maria Jose, who drilled the ball home. That lifted the 600 crowd, as did further efforts from Maria Jose and two Sara Tui chances. A last change for the final 10 minutes gave a home debut to Polish signing Alexandra Zaremba. Some of the ref ’s calls had frustrated Granadilla, but not as much as her red card to Maria Jose, after Maddi Torre went down off the ball. The home player looked shocked by the decision, but Granadilla later appealed successfully, on the grounds that there had been no contact between the players. But the incident served to fire up the home players for a final fling. Alexandra forced a corner from her marker, but the keeper pounced as the ball came across. One last corner was headed down in the area by Cindy Garcia, and Simpson squeezed the ball between the post and the keeper, as two defenders tried to crowd her out.
