Safety campaigns are being launched for swimmers

Canaries is focal point for death by drowning

Cont. from Front It was the fourth drowning in the Canary Islands this week, and all the other deaths occurred in under 24 hours. The latest data shows that eight out of every 10 people, who have died here in the Canaries, either in swimming pools, or in the Atlantic, have been foreigners. Presley’s mum and dad, Kirsty and Peter, were by the poolside, and, said an onlooker: “Their two children were in the pool, and his parents looked away for just a second. “The boy fell into the water,

and the lifeguard, who is absolutely devastated, jumped into the pool to rescue him. But to no avail.” Medics from an air ambulance helicopter administered CPR for some 90 minutes. It was alerted as part of the emergency response, after the alarm was raised at around 3.40pm. But, cruelly, Presley failed to respond, after going into cardiac arrest, and was declared dead at the scene. The family, thought to be from Hindley in Wigan, Greater Manchester, had arrived the day before. Now, at last, campaigns are being set up as a necessary precaution for the public’s

safety, and no wonder! Last Monday, 70-yearold Silvia Phillips was reported to have drowned in the swimming pool at Gran Canaria’s holiday apartments in Puerto Rico, where she was staying. The following day, in the same municipality, a 60-year-old man was also reported to have drowned in the sea. He was swimming with his wife when the undercurrents got the better of them. Unfortunately, the man lost his life, but his wife was saved by the Red Cross, thanks to their quick response. The couple were Dutch holidaymakers.

On the same afternoon, another 60-year-old man’s life was cut short when he drowned in Lanzarote. And, last week, it emerged that a 28-year-old Brit, on a sunshine break with her partner, had died in hospital in Ibiza, two days after being pulled out of a swimming pool at her apartment complex. She had been in a critical condition after being rescued from the pool at the Hotel Nautico Ebeso on 5th September, and died, two days later. To add to the growing concern, another two people have needed medical attention after suffering serious accidents.

Although there have been several incidents in the ocean this week, the Costas group, responsible for all Spanish coasts, insists that the Canarian waters are extremely safe. Officials believe that the cause of these death-bydrowning situations, is, mainly, a lack of knowledge and respect for water, by holiday-makers, unaware of the dangers. For this reason, necessary campaigns are being introduced to advise the public of the preventative measures, as well as giving safety advice, and spelling out the dangers of swimming, especially in the sea.

Adeje tourist project proves so intelligent Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga is right on the ball

THE Adeje DTI (Destino Turistico Inteligente/Intelligent Tourism Destination) project has been given top marks by the Spanish Government and the European Union. It has beaten 37 other projects from local Spanish administrations, and it means the borough will receive a substantial investment from European Regional Development funding, and also from the national department of finance, from a fund of six million euros. The presentation dealt with tourist development and innovation in Costa Adeje, which will now glean direct benefits for the whole borough, with a planned expansion of municipal services, through innovative

Adeje’s stunning Palacio del Duque

“The reduction of our carbon footprint is also a pledge we have made for Adeje in the coming years.” technology. This will improve social harmony and shared used of public spaces by residents, as well as the thousands of visiting tourists. Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, who was the principal mover behind the project, through the Innovation and Tourism Department, says this positive stance is valued by all local administrations. “In Adeje, we have underlined the values generated through tourism, and, thanks to that, we have seen a related improvement in the quality of life for our residents, with job creation, improvements in services, better infrastructures, and

more through this project in the coming years.” Local Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira said they would be developing an “intelligent platform”, which would “reorganise the municipal services structure in a more integrated manner, using a way of digitallymonitoring public spaces, and, thus, assessing needs for better services, such as public lighting, waste collection, public green-space upkeep, parking, beaches, etc.” Adeje Council has been working on the project for a number of months, as have other Canarian destinations, such as San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Puerto de la Cruz.

In addition, Rodríguez Fraga, as President of the Association of Tourism Boroughs, recently outlined to the national Industry Minister, the importance of advancing the Canarian digital agenda. “We will be among the first to use 5G technology, which will distinguish us from other tourism destinations in the rest of the world, competing for similar markets,” he said. “And that will clearly mark a “before and after” in the technological development of our destinations, creating jobs for hundreds of businesses in the sector.” Adeje DTI proposes, among other things, “smart beaches”, which will use an integrated information technology, recording numbers of beach-users; the real-time state of services; cost of water in the showers, along with other data, which can contribute

to the improvement of proper quality-control of the destination, as well as the resources needed. The project will also see “sensorisation” of Adeje public buildings, to monitor and control C02 emissions. “The reduction of our carbon footprint is also a pledge we have made for Adeje for the coming years,” said the Mayor. “This is a priority for us. As a tourism borough, we want to reduce our emissions, and optimise the resources we use, which is why we are working to create ways of combating the effects of climate change, too.” Among the project’s final objectives, Adeje is also committed to transparency, saying the politics of open data will work to encourage the Adeje public’s participation in taking decisions, and evaluating local public services.

Will we be clocking off for the last time? NEXT March will be the last compulsory clock change, on to BST and CEST for the Canary Islands and Spain, according to the European Commission.

After that, all EU Member States will decide for

themselves what to do. They will have to inform the Commission whether they want to stay on summer hours, or whether they will, again, change the clocks in October. And, also, whether they intend to continue to do so twice-yearly, or remain on either winter or summer hours. Polls in the Spanish media

highlight that more than 75% of people in Spain want permanent summer hours, although Galicia wants year-round BST, and Portugal, directly to the south, wants to carry on with the twice-yearly clock change. A committee set up by Pedro Sánchez’s Government will discuss what to do. Meanwhile, the Canary

Islands want to remain on a different time zone from the mainland, largely because of their geographical location, but also because of their 24-timesdaily mention on the radio when the hour is announced. Its regional government has asked to be part of Sánchez’s committee. A majority of European

Commissioners are concerned about the health effects of compulsory clock changes, which is why these will no longer be obligatory. Also, 93% of Spanish respondents to the Commission’s survey want to stay on the same time yearround, as well as 80% of the 4.6 million respondents, overall.

Local footballer killed in horrific TF-1 crash PEDRO Perez Gonzalez, a 22-yearold footballer with UD Las Zocas, died in a shocking car accident last Sunday morning.

Gonzalez, from Guia de Isora, was being driven by a pal, attached to UD Chio, who suffered minor injuries. The pair are believed to been asleep when the Citroen Berlingo left the TF-1 motorway and tumbled into a deep ravine in the Adeje area, close to Las Menores. The car landed slightly under a tunnel-like structure, used for water and waste under the road. Pedro was identified at the scene by his father, who was called to the accident because he is a Local Police officer at Guia de Isora. Pedro had played for various Tenerife clubs and was currently with San Miguel’s Las Zocas, in the Tercera Division, which is the fourth tier of the Spanish league system. Sources say he had been spotted by several scouts,

but, because of his loyalty to Tenerife, he had declined offers. Recently, he was asked to play for a Yugoslavian team, but Pedro turned down the offer because he had

been told he would soon be training with CD Tenerife’s B team. The day before the tragedy, Pedro was unable to play against FC Athletic Tacoronte because of an

ankle injury. His Las Zocas team-mates, and others who knew him well, said he was an exceptional player with great potential. He was also a responsible young man, quiet and polite.

Walker’s helicopter rescue

A WOMAN walker, aged 55, had to be rescued by helicopter on Monday afternoon, after losing the use of her legs through a fall in Anaga’s Rural Park, which spans La Laguna, Taganana and Santa Cruz. The German holidaymaker had to be airlifted for that reason, and a helicopter was dispatched at 12.38pm, just after the emergency call was received. The caller said the woman was unable to move after suffering a fall, and, because of the precarious location, the chopper was necessary. Once found, she was hoisted aboard and taken to Los Rodeos airport, where an ambulance was waiting to transfer her to the University hospital. The woman had suffered considerable injuries to her lower limbs, and is being observed closely because of her injuries.

Surrey cops probing Tenerife sex assault SURREY Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a female holidaymaker in Tenerife.

On her return from the island, the girl told her local police force that the incident had taken place on Tuesday, 19th June. The cops have released an e-fit of a man they want to speak with. He is described as black, approximately 5ft 9ins tall, muscular and in his 40s. He also had a black-ink tattoo on the side of his neck, reaching from ear to shoulder. The alleged attacker was also wearing

a black, over-the-shoulder Nike bag, which had the brand name written in white on the side, with its signature white tick. Detective Sergeant Michael Queally, from the safeguarding investigation unit, said: “We are keen

to identify the man in this e-fit, and we have also provided a description to help identify him. “Although the alleged offence took place in Spain, Surrey Police officers are investigating because the offence was reported once the victim had returned home.” Surrey Police believe that the man is hiding in Tenerife. If you recognise the man, or you have any information, contact police on 101, quoting crime reference PR/45180069415, or report online. Alternatively, the independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Tourists are driven mad by theft from hire cars SPAIN’S hottest cop has again sent social media into meltdown, after posting a nude picture while taking a shower. Jorge Perez Diez, who stole women’s hearts when a Guardia Civil snap of him went viral earlier this year, posted the raunchy snap on Instagram. In a matter of hours, it had been “liked” almost 20,000 times. “It’s impossible to sleep after seeing this,” wrote one user, while another wrote: “Thank you for this image. “Long live the Guardia Civil!” The first photo of Diez, tweeted by the Guardia in May, caused a nationwide manhunt, as press from around the world contacted the force in a bid to track him down. Daily newspaper El Pais said he joined the Guardia Civil in 2005 because he wanted to “take care of others”. He has worked on counter-terrorism and narcotics in the Basque Country and Catalunya. Now, though, he watches over security issues in Aguilar de Campo. a small Palencia village in the autonomous community of Castile and León. Unfortunately for his many female admirers, though, he moved to the village out of love for his wife, who lives there.

Knife-men held by cops

THE National Police have arrested two men wielding a large knife, a Canarian aged 42 and a 29-year-old Cuban, in the Santa Cruz capital of La Palma. A fight broke out on Avenida El Puente at 11.30am, and the man was slashed on his face and arms with the knife. The victim was attended to, immediately, in the emergency department of the local hospital. Police arrested the duo, who, after descriptions from witnesses, are in police custody awaiting trial for attempted murder.

Holiday-makers were unaware of car thefts

GUARDIA Civil officers arrested a Guia de Isora man, who forced his way into tourists’ hire cars, and then stole all the contents. An

investigation

began

in the middle of August, following several, similar complaints made to the police. The Guardia found and detained the 46-year old Canarian, charging him with breaking into several cars, while tourists had left their vehicles to take holiday snaps.

One of the reported major break-ins happened in Vilaflor, and another from outside a restaurant in Chio. Thanks to the help of witnesses, and the diligence of the Guardia officers, the thief was tracked down and is now awaiting sentencing.

Apartment-block blaze hits eight people there EIGHT people were treated for smoke inhalation on Tuesday afternoon, after a fire broke out at an apartment block in the Santa Cruz area of Añaza. And one person had to be taken to hospital to be treated, specifically, for anxiety. The fire, which spread to surrounding homes, was believed to have started at an apartment used by the local Council’s Social Services, for those in emergency situations.

A mother was occupying the apartment with her two children, aged 13 and nine, when the blaze began. Officials said the family hadn’t suffered any injuries from the fire. But, because of the damage caused, the Council is seeking an alternative refuge for them until they can return to their original home, in Añaza. An investigation has opened, and officials are looking into the cause of the fire.

Dead lady’s credit card used to book a holiday

TRANSACTIONS made on dead woman’s credit card led to the National Police arresting a 29-year-old woman, who had helped attend to her.

Beforehand, a call had been made to the emergency services, reporting that a woman had fallen unconscious, on an Arrecife street in Lanzarote. The police, along with an ambulance team, soon arrived at the scene, and CPR was administered. Sadly, medics were unable to revive her. But the woman’s former husband made several reports to the police, complaining that the bank account he had with his late ex-wife was being tampered with by a third party. He added that large transactions were being made, one for 1,453

euros, and another for 2,087 euros, although the latter was declined by the bank. The deceased woman’s bank card was in her possession, together with other personal items, when she passed away. Yet it was used for shopping and even a holiday, over the internet. An investigation was launched, and National Police soon determined that the transactions were carried out via the stolen bank card. The investigating officer was told that the internet holiday deal had been made by a person with the same name as the medical technician, who assisted in the attempt to save the woman’s life. The police, who soon found her, arrested the woman on theft and other fraudulent charges. The person, who had never troubled them before, was caught on 28th August, and is now awaiting sentencing.

Siam Mall school windfall for Adeje families in need ISABEL Fernández González, Adeje’s Social Welfare Councillor, has collected a donation of school materials from Siam Mall manager Hugo Gil, for her area’s families in need.

Earlier this month, the centre also hosted a schoolbook exchange programme, as well as giving out materials, such as notebooks, pencils and pens, etc. “The day was a huge success”, said Mr Gil. “This was our first time at hosting an event of this kind, and we were delighted with the outcome.” “As part of Siam Mall’s corporative, social responsibility, this is an important theme, and more so when we have the chance to talk to the children involved.”

The centre’s officials are already planning to repeat the exchange next year, and, hopefully, get more people involved. Councillor González said: “It is so important that society is involved in these kinds of solidarity initiatives. We are fortunate that many of our local institutions, as well as individuals, do contribute and work with our department to help those in the borough who are in need. “When Siam Mall got in touch with us to ask how they could help, we came up with the book-exchange idea. That’s because this is a huge cost for families, particularly at the start of the school year. “This was our first year, and we look forward to many more similar initiatives, because they really do benefit so many families here.”

No wonder they’re ratty! RESIDENTS in La Laguna’s Los Balidos area have a daily battle on their hands, because they are living alongside a plague of rats.

On top of that, they are overwhelmed with offensive, overpowering smells, which have become much worse during the last few months, when the sun has been blistering. The problem was reported in August by a programme, which was aired on primetime Spanish TV, but to no avail. The situation is thought to have been made worse because a local establishment, which processes food, then throws the waste into the regular rubbish containers, which, the residents believe, is adding to the rat problem, Residents say they are frightened because of the size of the rats, adding that the animals are hard-faced and are not scared of being in the presence of humans. The rats have their nests extremely close to homes and other establishments, and have become a terrible nuisance, especially when rooting constantly in the rubbish containers. There is a common fear by residents when walking past the bins, but they are still awaiting a response from the local council.

Adrian’s Bittersweet show

Careless thieves made it so easy for officers

TWO men have been arrested by the National Police, who have charged them with a series of robberies in Gran Canaria, including an armed attempt to steal cash from a pedestrian.

THE Adeje Cultural Centre’s art exhibition by Adrián Fresneda, the Sacred, bitter, velvet. SHOW, runs until next Tuesday (25th Sept). Adrián, from La Mancha, has been living and working in Tenerife for the last two years. His work is full of joy, with splashes of colour, almost baroque in style. At the same time, though, it is analytical and full of irony, with spurts of irreverence.

He demonstrates these qualities in the themes running through the show: art, politics and Spanish society, as well as culture, religion and homosexuality. The exhibition features paintings, recordings and collages, reflecting his inspirations. They also invite spectators to enter his world and almost become part of it. “The homosexual world is very present in the show, as well as the underworld,” he says. “And what is outside the boundaries of ‘normal’.”

One of them took place at a veterinary clinic in Telde, but a passer-by upset their plans by spotting them as they tried to force their way in. He alerted the cops with a direct call, and officers arrived at the scene almost immediately. By then, though, the men had waved

goodbye to the clinic, having found nothing of value there. But they were trying to break into a nearby home, which made the officers’ job a lot easier. After arresting the men, aged 22 and 24, they checked the clinic and discovered that the door was ajar and the locks were forced open. Then, upon inspecting inside the premises for any damage, they discovered the building was empty. But thanks to the passer-by, they were given an excellent description of the men. It didn’t take them long to spot the couple, one of them keeping a look-out while the other attempting to climb in.

They were both caught redhanded by the police, yet decided to act innocent, insisting that what they were doing was of no importance. It also came to the officers’ attention that, moments before the men decided to break into the house, they had approached a chap in the street and asked him for money. When the man refused, he was threatened with a knife and fled, terrified, from the scene. Both men have had previous dealings with the police, totting up several charges of similar robberies. They are in police custody at present, awaiting a court appearance.

Holiday-claim fraudsters? SEVEN people were set to appear in a Palma court on Wednesday, in connection with what was believed to be fraudulent claims for holiday sickness compensation. They include Laura Cameron and her brother and sister, who were founders of a company KLM Ventures, which the Guardia Civil claims was

the firm that operated reps, or touts, who encouraged false insurance claims from British holiday-makers in parts of Mallorca. The accused were all arrested last year by the Guardia Civil and eight addresses in Calvia and Palma were searched. Ms Cameron has previously told investigators and a court that she and others

were involved in collecting names and phone numbers of tourists, which were sold to UK marketing companies. She added that the information was not for any fraudulent use. The companies which paid for this information were named as HH Law Ltd, Holiday Claims and Ruby Diamond.

Young mother admits she gave away her baby THREE people in San Cristobal de La Laguna, arrested by National Police officers, have been charged with being involved in the illegal adoption of a newborn baby.

The trio comprised a married Spanish couple, along with a 22-year-old Columbian woman, who was the baby’s mother. The husband, aged 34, and his 37-year-old wife, were detained by officers for attempting to adopt the baby. The mother of the newborn was also held, for trying, falsely, to register the baby. An investigation began on 11th September after the young mum had approached the National Police, and confessed to being involved in the attempted scam. She began by telling the officers that, while in Columbia, she realised she was five months’ pregnant. The woman also admitted that she didn’t want the baby at first. But she was aware that abortions were illegal in her country. Consequently, she searched for a solution on the internet, and told the police that she found a Spanish couple from Tenerife, willing to adopt her child. They offered to pay for her flight from Columbia, in addition to the birth costs, and a fee to attend university, Apparently, they offered the fees because the young

Thieving baggage-handler

A FLIGHT passenger filmed a baggagehandler in Spain, opening a suitcase, retrieving a speaker, and putting it in his pocket. The witness, reportedly, caught the act on camera (above) while onboard a Ryanair plane, waiting to fly from Ibiza to Madrid, before alerting an air steward. Police convinced the man to confess, before they returned the stolen item to its owner, a teenage boy who was travelling to the Spanish

capital with his mum. The suspect, understood to have been sacked after just three days in the job, now faces trial. In the footage, he can be seen opening the case on a luggage trolley, before searching the contents with one hand and putting the red speaker in his left trouser pocket. The incident happened last Friday morning. The boy’s mother told a Spanish newspaper that she was grateful the police had returned the speaker to her immediately, because she had bought it for her son’s birthday.

Brit tourist critical mum didn’t want to “sell” the baby. But, by the same token, she did want to have it adopted. The 22-year-old agreed to go ahead with an adoption, but only because the couple had portrayed themselves as being responsible, as well as financially secure. As a result, they arranged for her to fly from Columbia to have her baby in Tenerife. The new mum told the police that on arrival at the couple’s Tenerife home, she was told she couldn’t leave the building. Suddenly, it dawned on her that the couple had lied to her, not only about their financial situation, but also because they already had two boys.

At that moment, she had a sudden change of heart; she didn’t want to go ahead with the adoption, and she wanted to keep her baby girl, which is why she approached the police. The young woman gave birth on 7th September at the University hospital in Santa Cruz. And, when the police detained the married couple, they found the baby to be perfectly healthy. The tot is now in the hands of the Social Services, whose officials are working on a solution with the Columbian consulate. The three people involved are awaiting a hearing at the San Cristobal de La Laguna courts.

A BRITISH holiday-maker, aged 24, is in a critical condition after falling from a second-floor balcony at his Gran Canaria hotel, in the early hours of Wednesday. The Mogan hotel is on the Taurito beach, in the south of the island, and an ambulance arrived rapidly after being dispatched to the scene, following an emergency call at around

3am. Upon arrival, medics began to treat the victim’s injuries, but it soon became obvious to them that he had suffered serious bruising. The man was transferred immediately to the main, general hospital in Las Palmas, where he is under observation because of his critical state. Officials are investigating the events leading up to the fall.

This new Bono idea is aimed at regular, public-transport users, as well as drivers. who use their card daily. Miguel Becerra, Director of the Institution of Mobility and Formation, said, in his presentation, that he estimates some 15,000 people will use this service, over the next few months. He also believes that there will be a financial impact for the public. In general, he says, the caruser, commuting to and from work around the South of the island, can spend some 250 euros a month on

“There would be huge savings using Bonos with up to 75% deductions” fuel. But if they switch to a Bono to use public transport, a Canarian resident can make huge savings. That’s because the commuting costs are just 47 euros for unlimited monthly use.

Those interested in using the new Bono can request one from today (Friday) on the following web pages: www.tenmas.es, www. bonoresidente.es and www. revolucionatenerife.es The Bono will be

personalised, and all you need to get your bono is a certificate of residency, or NIE number. Canarian President Fernando Clavijo hopes that the incentive will ease traffic congestion, considerably.

He added that this move was just one of the first steps taken to improve the overcrowded roads. “The public administrations must ensure that public transport is truly competitive, in more ways than one; not only economically, but also with the environment in mind,” he stressed.

Spanish space project boosting the industry PEDRO DUQUE (pictured centre), the Government’s Minister for Science, Innovation and Universities, has presided over the presentation of a framework contract, signed by Spanish technology firm GMV with the European Space Agency (ESA), on behalf of the European Commission. The contract relates to the maintenance and evolution of the Galileo Ground Control Segment, as well as the European global navigation satellite system and the EU’s genuine flagship of the growing activity in space. The contract, worth up to 250m euros, includes a definitive Work Order for the sum of around 150m euros. The GMV leads an industri-

al team, comprising various European companies, in which the Spanish industry plays an essential role. It is not known generally, but Spanish companies in the space sector have been increasing their technological capabilities for the last 20 years. They have doubled their global turnover in the last decade (851m euros in 2017), climbing to fifth place in the European ranking, based on turnover. And the sector now employs more than 3,500 highly-qualified people. The presentation was attended by María José Rallo, Secretary-General for Transport from the Ministry of Public Works, who represents Spain on the EU Committee on Satellite Navigation Programmes; Paul Verhoef, ESA Director of Navigation; Javier Ponce, the European Commission adviser on navigation activities; Augusto González, CEO of the Centre for Industrial and Technological

Development (CDTI), and also GMV chief Jesús B. Serrano. The contract signed by GMV puts the company in charge of monitoring the EU’s Galileo satellite constellation, as well as all the necessary equipment: the control centre, the orbital dynamic system, mission planning, operations support, the simulation tools, key management, network security, the monitoring stations, telemetry and tracking, as well as the connecting network between

them all. Galileo is the EU programme for the development of navigation services, based on a constellation of 30 satellites, and their associated surface control and operation installations. The ESA, under instruction from the EU, is responsible for contracting the main elements of the Galileo system. This growth by the Spanish space sector has been strongly linked to the country’s involvement in the ESA.

Spain is providing 202m euros of the 3.78bn euro budget for the international body this year, which enables its companies to bid on high-added-value, industrial contracts. In the last 20 years, they have produced an average industrial return, which has exceeded the contribution made by the country. Spain currently holds the ministerial presidency of the ESA Council, allowing its relevant companies to play a central role in the European space strategy. And it will contribute more than 1.5bn euros during the 20162024 period. The CDTI, a body managed by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, represents Spain at the ESA, as well as on various, space-related EU committees. This centre is playing an active role in supporting Spanish technology companies, especially with its encouragement for their international growth.

Expats are warned: Make sure you are registered in Spain SIMON Manley, Britain’s Spanish Ambassador, has issued a Brexit letter for all expats living in Spain, urging them to make sure they are registered fully before the UK divorce from the EU. Although his letter expresses optimism for a deal, it stresses that we must prepare for all eventualities, including a potentially- devastating “no-deal” finale. “Please ensure you are correctly registered here in Spain,” he says, and he also includes a link, detailing how to prepare for that scenario. It comes after “no-deal” guidelines from the British government on Monday revealed that UK driving licences could become obsolete, post-Brexit, on the continent.

The full open letter reads: ‘As many of you are no doubt aware, this autumn will be an important period in the ongoing Brexit negotiations, leading up to the European Council meeting on 18th October. Ahead of that, you might have seen that the Government has published a series of technical notices

on a range of areas, to help businesses and citizens prepare in the unlikely event of a no-deal Brexit. Firstly, let me reassure you that the Government does not want, nor does it expect, a no-deal outcome in the negotiations. As a result of the significant progress made in negotiations, I remain

confident that the UK will agree a positive and ambitious deal with the EU – an outcome that is in the interests of both the UK and the EU, and in the interest of both British and EU citizens. And, of course, we continue to discuss the implementation of the deal agreed last December with the Spanish authorities, on the rights of UK citizens currently living in the EU, and EU citizens living in the UK. But, as a responsible government, we must prepare for all eventualities, however unlikely. Hence these technical notices on driving licences, and travelling between the UK and the EU, among other subjects. I appreciate that this is a period of uncertainty, and that many of you have questions and want more advice for UK nationals living in Spain. We want to help you prepare for all scenarios,

and further relevant information will continue to be made available on gov. uk over the coming weeks. And both the Embassy and Consulates will continue with the outreach events we have planned throughout Spain, with some 20 of these planned between now and the end of the year. And we will ensure that your questions and concerns are shared with the relevant UK government departments. In the meantime, please ensure you are correctly registered here in Spain, and stay up-to-date with the latest news, by signing up for email alerts and visiting the Living in Spain guide on gov.uk, and continue to follow our “Brits in Spain” social-media channels, including on Facebook. Both I and our UK in Spain consular teams will continue to share with you what we know, and when we know it, to provide you with as much clarity as possible.’

Spain’s personal-data laws are becoming a nightmare RECENT changes to the Spanish Data Protection Act (Ley de Protección de Datos or “LOPD”) and the ancillary Royal Decree’s security measures, have added more complexity to an already-intricate law. Data-protection legislation has been around for many years, and its main aim has been to ensure that personal data is processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner. Individuals have, under these new laws, many rights: the rights of access to data; to have their data deleted; to be forgotten, or the right to withdraw consent. And these are just a few. Anyone with a company will confirm that it’s an absolute minefield. As a result, companies offering advisory services on implementation and supervision of procedures have flourished. Here’s a glimpse of how these fines have

been imposed on some companies: *4,000-euro fine imposed on car-rental company Europcar for issuing a contract with incorrect client details *15,000 fine issued to a company for revealing excessive data of employees, while negotiating work conditions with unions *20,000 fine issued to an IT company for sending communications to a mailing list, revealing the addresses listed (using cc instead of bcc) *60,000 fine imposed on an advertising company, which sent commercial offers to customers, whose personal details had been received without

authorisation, and, consequently, in breach of data protection laws *1.2m-euro fine given to Facebook for obtaining personal information from their members about creed, gender and ideology, as well as browsing data, without clearly informing them of its purpose or use Larger companies have been getting away with this for years, because, in practical terms, it does not terribly affect them financially (although reputation may be eroded). It is, however, the shop owner, and the office above it, that could be crippled by these new laws.

Guardia’s brave divers rescue port immigrants DARING divers from the Guardia Civil rescued 10 immigrants, who were trapped by the rising tide under a dock in Algeciras port. They were hiding, after jumping overboard from a boat, in an attempt to escape detection, without realising the danger they faced. The situation occurred when the Maritime Rescue (Salvamento Maritimo) boat, which had rescued them in the Strait of Gibraltar, entered port to disembark. The lower part of these docks has air chambers,

which allows them to act as breakwaters to maintain the safety of the ships at berth. But visibility is virtually nil, with gravel and iron girders making access extremely difficult, and, thus, ensnaring the terrified immigrants. Port officials called in the Guardia Civil’s frogman unit (GEAS) to rescue the trapped men, in view of the danger to them, posed by the incoming tide. A four-man team of divers, who found the 10 people towards the end of a pier, transferred them to the safety of a Guardia boat, before they received medical attention on dry land.

Woman fraudster told Guardia a pack of lies GUARDIA Civil officers have charged a 40-year-old foreign woman, living in Candelaria, who, they say, has been involved in fraud and scamming, as well as pretending that someone had set fire to her vehicle. The officers, also investigating a 39-yearold man, who was working alongside the woman, believe he took the car and set the vehicle alight. The intriguing events began on 30th July, when the woman told the Guardia Civil that her car had been stolen the previous night from outside her home. Officers began searching, and, before long, Local Police found that the vehicle had been torched,

A BRITISH resident in Tenerife visited El Mojón hospital’s emergency department in Arona this week, carrying a dead turtle in her vagina. According to El Dia newspaper, the woman claims she doesn’t know how it got there. Health personnel checked the patient, and verified the presence of the dead animal, which had caused a bad infection. The size of the animal has not been revealed or how it got there, but, after medical care, she told police that “she went to a party last Thursday with some fellow-Brits”. Later, a few hours after returning home, she realised she had the reptile in her genital area. Police are continuing an investigation.

NATIONAL Police, who launched Operation Bazar, have arrested 26 traders in Adeje for selling fake merchandise. While the operation was in full swing, officers dismantled no fewer than 28 establishments, all selling “moody” goods. Those detained comprised people of various nationalities, including Spanish, Chinese, Indian and Moroccans. And, after 32 inspections and interventions, 21,406 items of merchandise were confiscated. The investigation began in August, when the National Police became aware of several places in the South of Tenerife selling fake merchandise, which included leather goods,

in the Malpais area. While investigating, police discovered that the car was in the process of being bought from a Malaga hire-car company. And a 12,000-euro loan was requested by the woman, so the transaction, along with the name-change, transportation etc, could go ahead. The terms and conditions for the loan were agreed, but the car was stolen and vandalised, coincidentally, before the first payment could be made. Throughout the investigation, the officers detected a multitude of contradictions, which led them to believe that the woman had planned the whole affair and was making a false report, to swindle the insurance company. Both parties are now in custody, where they are awaiting a court appearance.

fake products, worth up to several million euros, from among the goods retrieved by the officials. The majority of items were made from leather, but there were also many fake items labelled with designer names, such as Michael Kors, Chanel, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Nike, Levis, Adidas,

Gucci, Prada and Swatch. Several arrests have been made over the last few days, and those held have all been charged with crimes against the public. Officers are, currently, putting the case together, and it will will be presented before a judge at Arona Court.

Prison for man who torched his partner

A JUDGE has sent a man to prison for attempting to murder his long-term girlfriend, in Los Llanos, La Palma, three weeks ago. The incident happened when the man became jealous of the 53-year-old woman, from mainland Spain. After she returned from a night out with a friend, events began to unfold, following a discussion with her partner. He wanted to kill his partner by dousing the woman with alcohol and setting her alight. The man then proceeded to spray a bottle of alcohol all over her and torched her, causing 50% burns to her body. The woman, who was found in a critical condition by the emergency team,

was taken to La Palma’s general hospital. At first, she was reluctant to press charges against her partner because she was frightened of the consequences, so she told the Guardia Civil a completely different story. It left officers with doubts about what had actually happened. But, after speaking with the victim again, it became clear that her injuries were not from an accident, but were inflicted by a person. The police then arrested her murderous partner, who is at present in police custody, awaiting sentencing. This particular case reminds many people in La Palma of the tragic events of 27-year-old Laura Gonzalez, who died at the hands of her ex-partner, after being burned alive. He was sent to prison for 37 years.

ONE person died and 11 were injured when scaffolding collapsed at Madrid’s Ritz Hotel, which is being renovated. The city’s emergency services said part of the sixth floor had come down on Tuesday, at around 4pm, with reports that it tumbled to the first floor. Two of the wounded were taken to hospital with serious injuries, while the others were not hurt so badly. All those involved were working on the renovation, and at least three people had to be pulled from the rubble.

Possible Brexit clampdown on Brits’ licences from UK

THE British Government has warned that driving licences issued in the UK “may no longer be valid” in Spain, if there is a “NoDeal” Brexit. It means that 29th March next year could be the deadline for drivers using them in Spain, and other countries. Once the UK leaves the EU, Brits on holiday in Spain could be forced to use an international driving permit (IDP) in Europe. Obtaining an IDP is, currently, a

standard requirement for drivers in some cases, if they are travelling by car outside of Europe. And getting one is now a simple procedure, relatively, from most UK post offices, for just £5.50. But not for long, unfortunately, because, from 31st January 2019, international driving permits will be obtainable only from the Government. Details of price and issue points are yet to be revealed. The Government has also announced that the once-simple exchange of a British driving licence with that of another EU country will be improbable, following Brexit.

Tourist spikes knee after his terror fall GRAPHIC photographs show how a British holiday-maker was impaled on a sun umbrella, after falling from the fourth floor of his Ibiza hotel.

The 31-year-old tourist is understood to have plunged from the balcony of his San Antonio apartment at 10am on Sunday. He suffered severe injuries after the umbrella’s pole pierced his leg, just above the knee.

The unnamed holidaymaker was aided by emergency services who sawed off the umbrella pole, before rushing him to the Can Misses Hospital on the island. Reports suggest the British man remains in a serious condition there. Spanish police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. The popular Ibiza resort of San Antonio has been the scene of numerous incidents and accidents involving Brits, this summer.

Knee-cap victim is butchered by gang

Spain’s missiles’ sale to Saudi has been revived

SPAIN will sell 400 missiles to Saudi Arabia after all, despite growing concerns over their use in war-torn Yemen, following threats from Saudi officials.

THE British victim of an alleged gang attack, which happened last Thursday on the Costa del Sol, has been named as Craig Moran by two UK national newspapers. He suffered from shots, knife cuts and punches after, reportedly, being tricked into a meeting. But

no arrests have yet been made. Police confirmed that Morgan was “kneecapped”, suffered broken bones in his lower body, and was cut from the corners of his mouth up to his ears, known as the “Glasgow” or “Chelsea smile”. The victim was found after being dumped in a ditch, and reports in the Spanish media claim that the specialist group, Unit against Drugs and Organised Crime (UDYCO), has taken

over an investigation into the incident. Members are said to be searching for a group of three or four Brits, and they believe the attack could have been related to “a settling of scores”. One British national newspaper has claimed that Craig Moran was sentenced to 12 years for a Nottingham jewel heist, that resulted in the death of a 64-yearold woman in 2003, but this has not been confirmed officially.

The about-turn came after the Spanish Defence Ministry announced last week that it would halt the 9.2m-euro sale of laserguided missiles, fearing they would be used in the ongoing conflict. Online radio station Cadena Ser reported that the Spanish Government had started the process of cancelling a contract, signed between Mariano Rajoy’s former government and the Gulf Arab state, in 2015. But just 48 hours after Defence Minister

Margarita Robles said the sale was “undergoing review”, the Government decided to reactivate it. Foreign Minister Josep Borrell announced the Uturn last Thursday, stating that his department found “no irregularities” to prevent the sale, and that the missiles would be sent to honour the 2015 agreement. The decision followed threats from Saudi authorities, who told Madrid that other contracts would be at risk if the missiles’ sale were halted. Those contracts included the purchase of five warships, produced in Spain, costing more than 1.8bn euros in total. Before the news, workers at the Navantia shipyard, based in Cadiz, staged protests to fight for the jobs of the 6,000 people employed there.

Council says miniature pods ‘unfit for humans’

A SPANISH company has been facing outrage after revealing plans to rent out tiny pods, like honeycombs, to low-income workers, for as little as 200 euros a month. The Barcelona firm believes its Haibu (beehive, in Japanese) project is a solution to the Catalan capital’s soaring rent prices. But it probably won’t see the light of day, because Barcelona Council has refused to issue a building licence, because, it says, the miniature accommodation is “unfit for humans”. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, a former housing and anti-eviction activist, said: “Fortunately, piling up people is prohibited. The law does not allow

this type of dwelling.” But the defiant Haibu 4.0 company has already started building the first eight pods, despite lacking the go-ahead, and it expects them to be finished by the end of the month, at an empty business premises. Each 2.4sq/m pod comes complete with a bed, TV, storage space and power plugs, and the skin-tight accommodation has become a popular option for Japan’s tourists. The project will include a communal area with a kitchen, lounge and bathrooms, and the monthly rent would include utility bills and WiFi. Haibu housing is restricted to those aged 25-45, who have a minimum salary of 450 euros, monthly. And the company claims 500 people have already expressed an interest.

“We are basing it on the idea that a group of people, who can’t have access to housing, can band together

and move ahead,” said Victoria Cerdan, one of the entrepreneurs behind Haibu 4.0.

“Obviously, it is not adequate housing. No one would want it for himself or herself. But no one wants a monthly salary of 500 euros, and, unfortunately, they exist. Instead of living on the street, we offer this.” Inigo Errejon, a prominent law-maker with political party Podemos, criticised the idea, tweeting: “There are similar houses in cemeteries. They are called coffins.” Barcelona has seen the average rent for a flat soar 28.7% between 2014 and 2017 to 903.4 euros. The Haibu idea is more suitable for short-term accommodation, but not for full-time living: They are a cheap option for tourists and business travellers, who want to stay for just one or two nights in the same city. They merely want a roof over their heads.

Using scans and virtual reality, he reveals the ingenious architectural solutions that enabled this awe-inspiring church to survive 1,500 years of turmoil. Michael also goes in search of the mighty city built by the Roman emperor Constantine - Constantinople. He comes across a few surprises on the way. The Hippodrome began as a massive stadium for chariot racing, but its foundations were later converted into a huge water cistern to supply the Emperor’s Great Palace. He wades through its foul smelling water and uses scans and computer graphics to reveal its place within the Hippodrome’s structure. He also finds a holy well, hidden 30 feet beneath a modern carpet shop; walks high above the city on the longest and most sophisticated aqueduct of the Roman world; and finds that part of the once glorious Great Palace of Constantine is now a burned-out shell. Along the way Michael finds time for a shave in the conquering Sultan’s Grande Bazaar and uncovers the engineering innovations of the magnificent Süleymaniye Mosque, a treasure of the Ottoman Empire’s golden age. Using virtual reality, Michael ends his adventures by flying up through the ancient dome of the Hagia Sophia, seeing Istanbul as even the locals have never seen it before.

Egypt’s Great Pyramid: The New Evidence Channel 4, 20:00

TV Guide

Egypt’s Great Pyramid may be humanity’s greatest achievement: a skyscraper of stone built without computers or complex machinery. This super-sized tomb has fascinated historians and archaeologists for centuries, but exactly how the ancient Egyptians finished the monument and fitted its two and a half million blocks in a quarter of a century has long remained an enigma. Today the secrets of the pyramid are finally being revealed thanks to a series of new findings. At the foot of the monument, archaeologists are uncovering the last surviving relic of the pharaoh Khufu, whose tomb it is: a huge ceremonial boat buried in flat-pack form for more than 4500 years. It’s a clue that points to the important role that ships and water could have played in pyramid construction. This documentary follows investigations that reveal how strong the link between pyramids and boats is.

Monkman And Seagull’s Genius Guide To Britain c h o i c e BBC2, 20.00

This second episode - their ‘genius guide’ to Wales - has a strong industrial engineering flavour. Monkman and Seagull begin by sailing across the highest navigable aqueduct in the world - Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1805, this pioneering piece of engineering was built to carry raw materials over a vast ravine into England during the industrial revolution. The tiny village of Hawarden gives the brainy duo the opportunity to stay overnight in the UK’s only residential library, surrounded by former Prime Minister William Gladstone’s unique collection of books. Approaching Mount Snowdon they visit a former quarry hospital in Llanberis, now a museum highlighting its previous life caring for injured slate quarry workers. Here they use their vast knowledge to work out what some of the old medical apparatus was used for. Eric and Bobby also seek some last-minute m o u n t a i n e e r i n g inspiration from Edmund Hilary and Tenzing Norgay, by visiting the hotel they stayed at while training on Snowdon for their pioneering ascent of Everest. Finally, the two friends make an attempt on the summit of Mount Snowdon itself - via the mountain’s iconic rackand-pinion narrow gauge steam railway train, which has been ferrying tourists to the top of the peak since 1896.

Peston ITV1, 22.45

Robert Peston brings his political magazine show to Wednesday nights to provide viewers with an fresh, intelligent and lively perspective on the big matters of the day in a brand new slot. Promising a stellar line-up of guests from across the political spectrum as well as cultural figures, Peston will feature major interviews with Westminster heavy hitters, topical guests and the very latest political gossip from inside the bubble. Co-presenter Anushka Asthana will help Peston fuel the conversation in the studio and online, with updates from social media taking in perspectives from viewers, experts and key-players throughout the programme. British official is not quite so diplomatic!

Gay couple’s complaint about a Guardia officer A GAY expat couple have filed a denuncia on a Guardia Civil officer in Malaga, after alleging that he assaulted them.

Londoner Andrew Jones, 36, and Argentine partner Mario Alejandro Dieni, 39, claim they were “pushed”, “grabbed” and “screamed at”. And they simply don’t know why. The couple have filed an official denuncia over the incident at the British Embassy. The incident happened at around 1am on 7th September, and Andrew Jones, who has severe bipolar disorder, said he had been “really shaken up with severe anxiety”. He added: “He was immediately aggressive. We are gay, and he saw us both in the car together. Perhaps it was some form of discrimination; I don’t know why he did it.” The British expat, who works part-time in advertising and marketing, said stressful situations can bring on a psychotic outbreak, for which he has been sectioned before. And his partner also has a benign brain tumour, which is affected by stress as well. The incident was said to have happened after Jones was driving home, having picked up his partner from work at a Nerja hotel, when they were stopped by

Guardia Civil officers for a “routine check” at Torrox. Andrew said: “Immediately, one officer started speaking very aggressively to my partner, saying, ‘Shut up and get out of the car’ in Spanish.” He claimed that his partner asked the officer to speak to them with respect before they got out. “But he started screaming,” recalled Andrew. “He came so close that his nose almost touched mine, and he also pointed a finger in my face. “I said to him, ‘I have a mental illness; treat me with respect’, and that was when he went absolutely berserk. “He pushed me so hard that the officer behind had to catch me, or I would have fallen to the ground.” The expat alleged that the officer then “grabbed” his partner and “tossed him

to one side”, after he had attempted to call his lawyer. He claimed that the officer called around nine officers to the scene for back-up, before they were forced to intervene. They removed him, and asked him to sit in the car. Jones said another officer gave his colleague’s badge details, which couple used to serve the denuncia on the officer the following day, at Malaga’s National Police station. The expat added: “This has really shaken me up, and my nerves are shot.” A British Embassy spokesperson told online newspaper Olive Press: “We are assisting a British man in relation to an incident that occurred in Torrox, Andalucia, on 6th September.” A Guardia Civil spokesperson confirmed the incident was “being investigated”.

LLOYD Milen, a highranking British diplomat in Spain, has become a laughing stock on social media after offering his explanation about the recent spate of balcony-related deaths in the country, involving British holiday-makers.

The Barcelona-based Consul General, taking to his social-media accounts, promoted a weekend interview, in which he had taken part with a top Mallorcan newspaper. Consul General Milen suggested that UK tourists were prevalent in balcony falls this summer, because “British people don’t tend to live in flats with balconies, and perhaps they’re not accustomed.” He also said the alcoholic measures were far greater in Spain than in the UK, adding: “A gin and tonic in

the United Kingdom tastes of tonic; here it tastes of gin.” The Consul’s comments did not sit too well with readers, and he was ridiculed widely across Twitter, and other social-media forums in Spain. One Mallorcabased, emergency-services worker wrote on Twitter: “Us Mallorcans are not used to snow. We fall out of the cable cars when we go skiing.” Another person wrote: “We don’t usually have kettles in Spain, but that doesn’t mean we pour boiling water over ourselves when we see one!” And Luis Alfonso, a Madridbased lawyer, wrote: “When I visit the UK, I now have an excuse if I have a car accident. In Spain… we’re not used to driving on the left.” Finally, one outraged Spaniard, who obviously has no love of Brits, said: “The solution is to put balconies in the UK, so they kill themselves there and stop coming here to be pains in the a**e.”

Rude rapper still free A BELGIAN court has rejected Spain’s request to extradite rapper Valtonyc, sentenced to prison for charges relating to insulting the monarchy with his lyrics. The request comes after the Mallorcan artist, real name Josep Miquel Arenas, exiled himself in Belgium last May, after being sentenced to 3½ years in jail. “For the moment he is free, and he is free definitively in Belgium,” lawyer Paul Bekaert told Reuters TV this week. “There is no terrorism involved; there is no incitement of terrorism, so there is no question of a crime, according to Belgian law.”

But he added that a European Arrest Warrant could be issued if the 24-year-old rapper travels to other countries. The Sa Pobla artist was convicted of glorifying terrorism, threatening rightwing politician Jorge Campos, and making defamatory comments against the Spanish royal family in April. Organisations such as Amnesty International have campaigned for Valtonyc’s freedom, arguing that it is a freedom-ofspeech breach. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s new socialist government is working towards repealing the controversial Citizen Safety law, which was dubbed the “gag law”, when introduced in July 2015.

Ryanair staff ’s ‘fat slob’ insult about a husband A RYANAIR employee shared her thoughts about a British man on social media, after he complained about the airline’s treatment of his wife. The incident occurred after an article in a newspaper featured the complaints of a Ryanair passenger, David Bookbinder, who claims his wife Wang Yi, who holds a Chinese passport, was not allowed to travel to Tenerife from East Midlands Airport, because of visa issues. Mr Bookbinder, a former Derby County Council leader, and his wife, were said to be stranded at East Midlands Airport after Mrs Yi was unable to travel in the EU Shengen zone. In the article, Mr Bookbinder argues that his wife should have been able to fly on his British visa, saying: “Ryanair staff are adamant, but they simply just do not know the rules.” Upon reading Mr. Bookbinder’s rant in an online version of the article, Ryanair Customer Service Supervisor Laura Coupland commented on Facebook: “I bet his wife was hoping deep

down that she wouldn’t get on the flight, and he would carry on his journey without her. I mean, waking up to that fat slob every morning!’ Miss Coupland has since deleted her remarks, and, Ryanair, when asked to comment, refused to address “unverified socialmedia posts”. However, Ryanair did comment on Mr Bookbinder’s claim that his wife was falsely denied access to the Tenerife flight. The airline spokesperson said: “It is each customer’s own responsibility to ensure they have the correct travel documents for their journey, as stated in our terms and conditions at the time of booking. “Our records confirm that the customer in question was not in possession of a valid travel visa, and was, correctly, denied boarding.” It is unknown whether Miss Coupland was involved in the incident that denied Mr Bookbinder’s wife access to board the Tenerife flight.

Two people bitten by rabies-infected bats

TWO SEPARATE incidents in Spain led a 59-year old woman and a 19-yearold youth seek to medical attention, after being bitten by rabies-infected bats.

Just 17 bat attacks have been recorded in Spain since 1987. But, this summer, two independent attacks, at opposite ends of the country, were revealed, just two days apart. The woman, from Valladolid, in northern Spain, was attacked by a bat when she opened a cupboard door and the mammal flew towards her. In the second instance, in Huelva in southern Spain, two days later, a man received a bat bite when saving the winged mammal from his cat. After both victims sought medical attention, they were reported to be in good health. They received treatment against rabies, and their wounds were thoroughly cleaned. Vaccinations were also given to the couple, to prevent the illness from taking hold.

Wisely, the bite victims decided to take the offensive mammals with them, when they sought medical treatment. And having them on hand for a thorough analysis, enabled doctors to identify that both bats had European bat Lyssavirus in their systems. Rufino Alamo, head of public-health information for the Castilla y Leon regional government, said the victims were “lucky”. He also praised the health services for their decisive response to the bites. Mr Alamo added: “Rabies is deadly in practically all

cases, if it develops.” Spain’s last major rabies outbreak happened in Malaga in 1975, during which two people lost their lives. Elias Fernando Rodriguez Ferri, a professor of animal health at the University of Leon, warns: “If anyone comes into contact with a bat, they risk contracting the virus. That’s why it’s important not to touch them, dead or alive.” In the last 20 years, 12 people in Europe have died after contracting rabies from a bat bite, and not seeking immediate, medical attention.

Spain’s addition to its extinct animals

SPAIN has presented a new list of animals, no longer living in the wild, throughout the country’s territories. The official state bulletin list of extinct indigenous species adds three mammals, two fish and eight birds. It also features 19 plant species. Importantly, the report details the steps required for future reintroduction of the extinct species, citing laws from a 2007 Natural Heritage and Biodiversity ruling, which encourages Spanish communities to accommodate the “old” newcomers when required. The monk seal, last recorded on Spanish shores in 1992, is already subject to an extensive reintroduction mission. University of Barcelona members are on the brink of reintroducing the

seals to Fuerteventura, in an attempt to form the foundations of a new seal community. The report has identified the valley of Aran, in the Pyrenees, as the ideal spot to launch a European Lynx (not to be confused with the Iberian Lynx, which remains in Spain) reintroduction campaign. The Lynx population is needed, desperately, to restore balance to the

ecosystem in an area where the hare population continues to rise, uncontrollably. HAVING seen his Health Minister, Carmen Montón, being forced to quit last week, following mounting irregularities over her master’s degree, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez found himself in the same boat, just two days later. But he has denied allegations that he fiddled his PhD thesis, and vows to sue anyone who says he did. Spain’s right-wing opposition, PP, is accusing socialist Sánchez of doing just that. But he is furious about the opposition’s attempt to “discredit what took him years of hard work”, and Madrid’s Camilo José Cela University has also spoken out. It points out that a PhD is written and researched under the close guidance of two supervisors, and fully reviewed by a panel, before the award is granted. The university says it has “thoroughly reviewed the internal and external evaluation processes” of the thesis presented by Dr Pedro Sánchez-Castejón in the year 2012, when he was 40. It confirms the “complete normality of the procedures, in line with legislation in force, and the habitual verification and control protocols” of the institution. The accusations erupted after a report in right-wing international newspaper ABC claimed that most of the thesis was written by famed economist Carlos Ocaña. Sánchez has announced legal action for libel against ABC, which says it does not intend to change one word of its article. In fact, it adds that it would be pleased to see the PM’s evidence to the contrary. Carlos Ocaña has also denied having written any part of Sánchez’s thesis, saying he later worked with the president as co-author of a book titled The New Spanish Economic Diplomacy, in which parts of the PhD were included. While the PP calls for Sánchez to “admit to plagiarism and resign”, his supporters, who include Spain’s third-largest political outfit, left-wing independent party Podemos, have asked whether PP leader Pablo Casado intends to do likewise. Having also taken his master’s degree at the King Juan Carlos University in Madrid, where ex-health minister Montón studied

33 CW

Spanish minister quits over Master’s degree, but PM is in the clear

for hers, accusations of plagiarism and “irregularities” or “favouritism” have also affected Casado. But he says that even if he had committed a criminal offence, it would have now expired under the statute of limitations. It is not clear whether this would also be the case for Montón, who took her master’s in the academic year of 2010 and 2011. Initially, Sánchez would not allow her to resign, saying she was doing “an excellent job”, but later reports claimed that up to 19 pages of the 52-page dissertation were direct copies of the works of other writers, “and even Wikipedia”. The minister had said she handed over her final thesis on gender studies in June 2011, something that would have been irregular because she had not completed all of the coursework, which was an essential requisite. Respected El Pais newspaper, which has had access to it, confirms that whole pages and paragraphs are copied from other theses and articles, which are freely available on the internet. For example, the entire first chapter is, virtually, the same as an article entitled “New identity”, written by Mexican Mónica Pérez, in July 2004. The episode is embarrass-

ing for Sánchez, who came to power earlier this year after ousting PP Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy in a vote of no-confidence, precisely down to corruption scandals plaguing the party. “I have been transparent and honest,” Montón told the press, after announcing her resignation. “I have not committed any irregularity.” She will be replaced by María Luisa Carcedo, who was the High Commissioner against Child Poverty. Montón is also the second minister forced to quit

during the first 100 days of the Sánchez administration, following Culture and Sports Minister Màxim Huerta’s resignation in June, after just one week in the job. Media reported that he withheld taxes in the early 2000s, and, recently, was forced to pay 365,000 euros in back taxes, late fees and fines. In late April, Cristina Cifuentes of the Popular Party (PP) was forced to step down because of irregularities in connection with a 2012 master’s degree she

obtained from King Juan Carlos University. That case has led to a criminal investigation into officials’ forgery of public documents at the public university. And current PP leader Pablo Casado is under fire for a similar degree, obtained from the same institution in 2009. So far, he has refused to hand over his final dissertation, pledging that he will not resign, even if the Supreme Court, which is investigating the case, decides to charge him.

Is the military planning return to the coastline?

POLITICIANS in Fuerteventura have served a denuncia on the Ministry of Defence, because it appears to be preparing to carry out new, large-scale manoeuvres by military personnel on the coast.

In 2002, the Spanish Navy’s Neo-Tapon exercise manoeuvres in this area caused a massacre of whales and dolphins. But

local residents’ protests forced the MoD to stop carrying out exercises in the area. This agreement has been maintained since then, although the Spanish Government never agreed to it, officially. Now, though, it seems as though the MoD exercises will again take place in the Pajara municipality, on the Matas Blancas beach. Local Pajara sources say beach-goers have reported the presence of military personnel, who have been making beacons there on behalf of the MoD, which

points to a coastal area that could be used to land soldiers and materials. Other leaked sources suggest that military exercises could take place in October and November. During the past week, swimmers and others exercising on the beach have been removed, forcibly, and told there was restricted use of this coastal area. But local activists claim they have sufficient social and scientific evidence to demonstrate the damage it would cause, if military exercises return there.

THE watermelon is a flowering plant that originated in northeast Africa, where it is found growing wild.

They are tropical or subtropical plants, and need temperatures higher than about 25 °C to thrive. As well as tasting delicious, they have several health benefits. Good for your heart Watermelons owe their gorgeous red colour to the powerful antioxidant lycopene, just like tomatoes. In recent years, lycopene has being recognised by the scientific community as an especially important nutrient for cardiovascular health. The consumption of lycopene-rich foods, like watermelon, have been connected to an improvement in blood flow by acting as a vasodilator, which widens the blood vessels, and have shown some ability to potentially lower LDL, aka bad cholesterol, making lycopene doubly good for your heart. Improves athletic performance Watermelon is a great source of citrulline, a non-essential alpha-amino acid that has been shown to enhance the utilisation of essential

35 CW

Get up to speed with watermelon amino acids during exercise, and increase blood flow. Consider including watermelon in your pre-andpost-workout routines, because it can reduce recovery time after exercise, and help further increase growth hormone levels after resistance training. Good for your bones Another benefit of lycopenerich foods is that they improve bone health by reducing oxidative stress, which can lead to bone problems, among other health issues. Lycopene may provide an alternative

natural treatment for the prevention and management of osteoporosis, especially in post-menopausal women. Keeps you hydrated As its name would suggest, watermelon is full of water! But this fruit is also a good source of electrolytes which help you to stay hydrated, and replace the minerals that are lost when you sweat. A natural diuretic Watermelon is a natural diuretic which helps increase the flow of urine, but does not put undue strain on your body, unlike

coffee or alcohol. Regular consumption of watermelon helps to ease strain on the kidneys, while your body eliminates excess fluids. Reduces inflammation Watermelons contain several compounds that are beneficial in reducing inflammation in the body, and have been proposed as an alternative natural approach to prevent or treat chronic inflammatory diseases. Reduces brain fog Watermelon is a good source of potassium, which is absolutely essential for our

bodies to function properly. Low potassium levels can lead to mental fogginess and confusion, because, without adequate levels of this extremely-important mineral, the electrical signals that drive the brain are interrupted. Improves immunity Watermelon is also a delicious way to get your daily dose of Vitamin C, with one serving containing about 16% of your day's requirement. Vitamin C is regarded as one of the safest and most effective nutrients around, and has been shown to improve immunity and overall health. It gets better as it ripens As the flesh of a watermelon ripens, and turns from white to pink to red, it doesn't just get sweeter and more delicious, but also more nutritious, as the density of its antioxidants gradually increases. Be sure to wait until your watermelon is fully ripe before you enjoy your perfect, anytime treat.

Blue Day

Nobody feeling Blue at this charity event!

IN true Costa del Silencio style, people pulled together for the Blue Day event, held at The Cosy Corner on Sunday 26th August, to raise awareness of men’s cancers. The day proved to be full of laughter and happy tears for organisers Jacqui and David Ritson. The auction attracted some fierce bidding, and there were raffle prizes aplenty. Everyone was entertained by some fine singers, who gave up their time for free. The cake stand was a roaring success, the bear

Amazingly, the original owner saw the dogs and immediately recognised them. After making a frantic call to Marc at the shelter, she arranged to come and see them. The dogs' reactions were priceless, and they had not forgotten their Mum. So Lacia and KO are now microchipped and back home. We love a happy ending. Raffle prizes needed We are having our calendar launch in Amanda’s Bar, Torviscas, on Saturday 13th October. The money raised will assist the vaccination

programme for all our dogs, which will cost around 3,000 euros. It is vital to keep animals up to date and protected against disease. If you can help in anyway with raffle prizes, gift vouchers or unwanted wine, smellies etc., please contact Siobhan on 676 261 825, or e-mail livearico@gmail.com Dog-walking club The dog-walking club has been suspended until 29th September because of the very warm weather, which takes its toll on both dogs and walkers. The club will resume at the end of the month: every Saturday from 9am-1pm. If you have any questions, WhatsApp Oceana on 0033 659 242 572 for further details. The colour matrix, for a designer look THE problem with interior design is that you know when something looks nice, and when it doesn’t, but you don’t always know why there is a difference. And making mistakes can, obviously, be costly. Interior designers work in different ways. Sometimes, if you buy the furniture through them, the design element is included, so you can receive all the advice and guidance you need, for free! Ensure you get the chance to state your preferences in terms of style, colours etc., or ask your interior designer to sit with you and go through some magazine pictures, or photos of his or her work, so that he or she

can get a feel for what you like. When using colour, for example, designers tend to use the 60/30/10 rule. The 60% is the main colour in your room, which shouldn’t be too strong. This will generally include your walls and large pieces of furniture, such as rugs and the sofa. It is the colour that anchors the space, and serves as a backdrop. Generally, neutrals such as beiges and greys work well. Your choice of this colour may be driven by other factors, such as the shade of your flooring. The 30% is the secondary colour you will choose, but, because it also takes up a lot of the room, it should be used with caution. After all, it’s half the amount of

the main colour. This could be curtains, bed linens or throws, or an accent wall, if that is your choice. This secondary colour must support and complement the first one, but should be different enough to set it apart, and give the room some interest. So, if your main colour is beige, your secondary could be a darker brown, or, if your main is grey,

your secondary could be aqua green or lilac. The 10% is the accent colour, and this is where your “wow factor” comes in. It’s the most fun colour, but it is also where the most care must be taken. In a lounge, this could be your cushions, decorative accessories and artwork. In the bedroom, it might be pillows or scatter cushion, lamps and candles.

The accent colour must only be used for 10% of the room, so only use these small items or it will become overpowering, or too “twee”. An example is when you have a white, modern lounge with white furniture, and you use red as an accent. You could use a picture that has a red element, and then also pick this up in a bowl on the coffee table, and a candle on the wall unit. The trick is not to overdo it. If you keep adding and adding and exceed the 10%, the effect is lost, and the accent colour becomes overpowering. Sticking to this formula will generally give you a good result. You could get inspiration for the whole colour scheme from one item such as

artwork or a cushion, and then develop the theme from there. You could have a grey, main colour for walls and curtains, and some grey cushions with an aqua sea green pattern on them, and an aqua rug. Then your accent colour could be a really vibrant forest green that would feature in the wall art, and a big bowl on the coffee table. Your scheme will look balanced and very designed. If you have ideas, but don’t know how to apply them, it’s definitely worth consulting an interior designer to guide you in the right direction. All the items and services mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo, who give free estimates, without obligation. 922 789 729.

Give it a try, and stay dry By Val Sainsbury IT’S all too easy to slip into a routine of having a daily tipple, but middle-aged drinkers are being urged to have alcoholfree days, as part of a new drive to improve health. People aged between 45-65 are more likely than any other group to consume more than the recommended 14 units a week. Public Health England says that introducing regular days off, preferably two, consecutively, will improve sleep, while reducing the risk of heart disease, liver problems, cancers and high blood pressure. There is no safe level of alcohol consumption, a major study concluded. Julia Verne, the body’s spokeswoman on liver disease, said: “Having a day off drinking gives you a chance to clean your system,

and give your liver a rest. It also has an immediate impact on your sleep and calorie consumption. “People have also told us that the idea of a drink-free day is much easier to manage than cutting down, say, from one large glass of wine to a small glass of wine.” The Drink Free Days campaign has seen the development of an app to give people “practical daily support”, to stick to a planned routine.

Duncan Selbie, chief executive of Public Health England said: “Many of us enjoy a drink, but whether it’s a few in the pub after work, a couple of times a week, some beers on the sofa watching the football, or regular wine with our dinner, it’s all too easy to let our drinking creep up

on us. “Setting yourself a target of having more drink-free days every week is an easy way to drink less, and reduce the risks to your health. Our best evidence suggests making it two consecutive days, if you can. It’s not a target, and it’s not about going mad on

the other five days. It’s an achievable way of thinking about how to manage your levels of drink.” A previous poll of nearly 9,000 adults, by YouGov, suggested people would find cutting down on their drinking harder than improving their diet, exercising more or cutting down on smoking. Elaine Hindal, Chief Executive of independent-alcohol-advice giver, Drinkaware, said: “An increasing number

of people, particularly middle-aged drinkers, are drinking in ways that are putting them at risk of serious and potentially life-limiting conditions, such as heart disease, liver disease and some types of cancer.” The guidance of not exceeding 14 units of alcohol a week comes from the UK’s chief medical officer, with a unit being equivalent to a single measure of spirits, or half a pint of average-strength lager.

CD Tenerife

Tenerife’s basement blues FROM bad to worse… and the season has only just begun! Tenerife kicked it off with a fresh attitude, but five games in with no victories leaves them desolate.

They have taken three points only from a possible 15, and are now, disconsolately, in the relegation zone. The painful defeat against Reus, together with setbacks against Almería and Nàstic, have put Tenerife in a delicate situation, especially since they were one of the teams expected to be fighting for one of the first six places in the league. Yes, they still have room for manoeuvre, but they are in desperate need of a victory against Córdoba tomorrow (Saturday). Curiously, Tenerife have also developed a bad habit of not winning against teams they should be overshadowing. Against Reus, they were again the better team for starters, with numerous chances created, and Undabarrena and Milla applying maximum pressure. Malbasic forced Édgar Badía into a

Football GARETH Bale believes that Real Madrid work together more as a collective unit without former talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, following the Portuguese forward’s move to Juventus in the close season.

In his absence, the Welsh winger is thriving, and Madrid have three wins from four La Liga matches. Bale, who was Madrid’s key weapon as the Champions League started again this week, scored in their 3-0 win against Roma on Wednesday at the Santiago Bernabeu. “It’s maybe a bit more relaxed without Ronaldo,” said Bale. “I suppose there is more of a team; more working as one unit, rather than one player.” Ronaldo, Madrid’s alltime top goal-scorer, was crucial to the club’s three consecutive Champions

CD Tenerife 0 Reus Deportiu 1

good save with a shot from outside the area after six minutes, and there were also chances for Suso and Naranjo, whose effort was saved by keeper. This was followed by a Naranjo cross, which Malbasic failed to reach by centimetres. But after 15 minutes of hope for their fans, Tenerife ran out of steam, to give Reus a welcome breather. Midway through the first half, Tenerife reestablished themselves

and had more close efforts. They came from Acosta, in the 26th minute, Carlos Ruiz a minute later, and, above all, an Acosta shot to the foot of the post, which brought an excellent response from keeper Badía. It was all Tenerife for the remainder of the half, until Reus had their first shot of the match, in injurytime. It was a long shot from Ledes, which failed to trouble keeper Dani Hernandez.

Little changed after the half-time break, although Reus had more presence with Planas, who also had the visitors’ best chances: a header from a 53rdminute corner, and a shot which hit a post. There was not much more news of the Catalans in attack, but, at the other end, Badia had to deal with more shots from Acosta, Nano and Suso, as well as a header from Carlos Ruiz, after 68 minutes.

But then came the same old Tenerife story. Suso claimed a penalty, which was denied, and it looked as though a draw was inevitable. After a corner, however, Villanueva cleared the ball and Reus went on the counterattack, with Planas poking the ball past a static Dani from two metres. Although Tenerife battled to the end, the draw failed to materialise, leaving them to rue their mistakes.

Bale now on a par with Madrid stars League wins under former coach Zinedine Zidane. Yet it was Bale who scored twice against Liverpool in the 3-1 triumph in May’s Kiev final. Bale, annoyed about not starting the high-level clash, came on from the bench, and, with that rage fuelling him, scored with an outstanding overhead kick. “I was angry; quite angry, to be honest,” reflected Bale. I felt I deserved to start the game. I’d been scoring goals, so I suppose it was hard to put the anger aside.” But Ronaldo, now out of his way in Italy, collected a debateable red card early in his side’s 2-0 Champions League win at Valencia, also on Wednesday. Bale’s pace and goal-scoring instinct is essential to new manager Julen Lopetegui, who would have had no complaints on Wednesday.

Daddy of them all! IF you ever wanted to know what great darts nights were all about, you should have been at Suters Bar last Friday, when Pas O Nadas ‘A’ were the visitors. As expected from two top teams, a close contest ensued, the 20:30 crew’s Leo posting two maximums, and leading his team to a 3-2 lead. But Daddy Cool replied with two 180s of his own, as well as a trebles victory to earn a thrilling 4-4 draw.

It was the correct result after a night of excellent darts and banter, all the way. Palms Sports Bar welcomed Marilyns ‘B’, and were held to a 4-4 draw, thanks to the patience of Dot, who hit a bull and double 19 for an 88 check-out. Nauta Nomads proved better on the night, as they beat companions Naughty Nautas 6-2 to claim the bragging rights. Good luck to all those competing in the trebles knockout tonight (Friday). rounds off a Ronnie rockets to Yates British grand-slam be top of the pots SIMON Yates sealed victory in cycling’s La Vuelta last weekend to complete a British clean-sweep of this year’s Grand Tours.

RONNIE O’Sullivan, acknowledged by most fellow-pros as the finest snooker player ever, became the first person to accumulate an astonishing £10 million in prize money, by retaining his Shanghai Masters crown in China on Sunday. O’Sullivan, nicknamed The Rocket, pocketed the £200,000 first prize with a

thrilling 11-9 victory against world No.7 Barry Hawkins. And that enabled the fivetime world champion to take his career competition earnings past the eightfigure mark. Not even the legendary Stephen Hendry or Steve Davis have achieved this. It was O’Sullivan’s first tournament of the season, and he demonstrated just what the rest of the pack must deal with for the remainder of the campaign. Ronnie, ever the sportsman, gave his winning trophy to a young girl fan in the

audience, saying: “I have so many trophies at home. The first one is very special, but now it is more about experiences. She can have it at home to remind her of this match.” He also handed over his highest-break trophy to another spectator. Despite his disappointing world championship form this year, the 42-year-old, No.3-ranked player, shows every sign of improving with age, and his third success in Shanghai sounded an ominous warning to his rivals.

The 26-year-old Bury racer’s success was all but guaranteed, as he headed into last Sunday’s, largely-processional, final stage to Madrid with a 1min 46sec lead, avoiding any late mishaps to land his first Grand Tour title. His comprehensive victory followed success for Chris Froome at the Giro d’Italia, and the stunning Tour de France win for Geraint Thomas, to round off an unprecedented year for British cycling. In fact, it made cycling history because three titles have never before been held by three riders from the same country. An elated Yates said: “It’s astonishing really. Growing up, I was so accustomed to seeing the French, Italian and Spanish riders lead the way. So for me, Chris and Geraint to win a Grand Tour in the same year

just shows how far the sport has come in this country.” Froome, whose TourVuelta double last year means British riders have now won five Grand Tours in a row, paid tribute to Yates, saying: “Simon has looked so strong over the last three weeks, and it’s great to see him take home the maillot rojo. It’s been a perfect year for British riders.” The day belonged firmly to the man in red, who recovered from the disappointment of running out of gas at the Giro, after holding the race-leader’s pink jersey for 13 days. Those punishing three weeks ended in heartache for him. But but they proved that Yates, who won the “young rider” classification at last year’s Tour de France, had what it takes to contend in Grand Tours. And he delivered at the next opportunity. Sports Minister Tracey Crouch said: “Simon’s brilliant victory in the Vuelta is the latest success in a phenomenal year for British Cycling.”
